Friends and colleagues of Jamie O’Sullivan have expressed their sadness at his passing in tragic circumstances on Tuesday evening. Jamie, 24, was one of three family members found dead at their home in Lixnaw, in the north of the county. | By Sean Moriarty He completed his welder/fitter apprenticeship at Liebherr Container Cranes earlier this year and was well-known and liked by colleagues at the Fossa plant. At approximately 8.30pm, on Tuesday evening Gardaí in Listowel received a call from a member of the public concerned for the residents of a domestic dwelling at Kilfeighney, Lixnaw. The body of Eileen O’Sullivan (56) and Jamie O’Sullivan (24) were discovered in the house. Both bodies appear to have suffered gunshot wounds. In a follow up search of the outdoor area of the site the body of Mossie O’Sullivan (63) was discovered at the boundary of the rear yard, also with gunshot wounds. “It is with deep sadness that we have learnt of the death of our colleague, Jamie O’Sullivan. Jamie completed his apprenticeship with Liebherr Container

Cranes Ltd earlier this year and was employed with us as a fitter and welder. At this difficult time, we would like to extend our sincere condolences to Jamie’s family, friends and work colleagues,” said a statement issued jointly by management and staff at Liebherr Container Cranes Ltd.
INVESTIGATION
Gardaí in Listowel have commenced a criminal investigation into the incident. The investigation is being led by Killarney-based Garda Superintendent Paul Kennedy. Superintendent Kennedy has been in charge of the Listowel Garda District since 2020. He told a press conference on Wednesday evening that a legally held fire arm was found at the scene.
He explained that the scene had been preserved on Tuesday night and that on Wednesday afternoon the Garda Technical Bureau commenced a forensic examination of the scene. Dr. Margot Bolster, Locum Assistant State Pathologist, attended the scene on Wednesday. The bodies of all three persons were removed to University Hospital Kerry, Tralee where state post mortems will take place. “The result of the post mortem will determine the course of the investigation but preliminary findings are that all three persons died as a result of the gunshot wounds. "An Garda Síochána is not looking for any other person in relation to this investigation, at this time,” Garda Kennedy told the briefing.

“A Family Liaison Officer has been appointed to the extended families of the deceased and An Garda Síochána will support the families during this personal tragedy for them. An Garda Síochána appeals for privacy for the family at this time.” “An Garda Síochána is also conscious of the severe impact this incident has on the tight knit community here in Kerry and we are appealing to this community or any other persons who may have any information in relation to the tragic events in Kilfeighney, Lixnaw to contact investigating Gardaí at Listowel Garda Station on 068 50820, or the Garda Confidential Number 1800 666.”
Locals in a McFlurry over traffic concerns | By Sean Moriarty Officials from Killarney Town Hall are to engage with the operator of the McDonald's franchise on Park Road in an effort to solve the growing traffic congestion issues caused by motorists visiting the restaurant’s drive through facility. Mayor of Killarney Municipal District Marie Moloney raised the issue at Wednesday’s KMD meeting. “There is terrible traffic congestion at the
junction at McDonald’s and the entrance to the new cinema. There is traffic queuing for McDonald’s which necessitates residents entering the road leading to their residential estates to have to overtake the queue on the other side of the road. Can Kerry County Council do anything to alleviate the problem,” she said. In reply a council official said: “The Killarney Municipal District Office will approach the owners with a view of resolving this traffic queuing issue.”

Pressure mounts on council regarding future of St Finan’s | By Sean Moriarty Elected officials from the Killarney Municipal District are puting Kerry County Council management under pressure to make decisions on the future of the St Finan’s Hospital site. The HSE is to offer the property for sale on the private market – this was confirmed to the Killarney Advertiser last month. Kerry County Council is in the process of buying 5.5 acres of the extended site which is part of the HSE land portfolio (and prior to the construction of the bypass part of the St Finian’s complex) but it is not part of the now separate St Finian’s site south of the By-pass. The dynamics changed last week when Minister for Housing Darragh O’Brien announced the “Housing for All” national homebuilding strategy. One of the key recommendations of the plans is the release of state owned land for residential construction. The matter was raised at Wednesday’s Killarney Municipal meeting by Mayor Marie Moloney. At the same meeting Cllr
Niall Kelleher asked: “if there discussions with the Land Development Agency regarding acquiring land in Killarney?” A council official replied: “All options regarding the availability and potential purchase of lands for Housing purposes in Killarney continue to be considered and pursued,” Mr Kelleher told the meeting that this response was not good enough. Earlier he had said that Killarney is facing a housing problem and that there are ten people for every available rental property in the town. The majority of the elected councillors agreed that the building needs to be acquired for homebuilding purposes and other uses. They called for the old hospital to be refurbished into apartments and in line with the new national plan. Only Donal Grady opposed the move citing its former use as a mental hospital as a reason it should not be used for housing. “A lot of bad things happened up there,” he said. However all agreed that the building should not be allowed fall into disrepair like other buildings including the Aras Padraig and the Pretty Polly factory.

Colourful Coolick N.S. | By Grigory Genitevskiy Puplis returning to Coolick National School were greeted with some new bright and vibrant colours. A local artist and parent Martin Carey had spent all summer working on murals for Coolick National School. The main mural focuses on the native animals of Ireland while other smaller murals around the school included paintings of smaller insects and flowers. A large mural was painted on what was once a blank dull wall to one of the main entrances of the school and pre-school. "We had a blank wall and it's the entrance to the school and pre school, so all the
kids would pass it every morning. We wanted something bright and colourful," principal Gearoid O'Sullivan told the Killarney Advertiser. Martin Carey added: "I tried to incorporate all the different elements such as having the native Irish animals on the mural. I do a lot of drawings and paintings but this was the first time I had done a mural. A lot of time was spent on it during the summer. Hopefully it inspires the kids and have them talking about it and enjoying it." Mr O'Sullivan added:"Its for the whole school and everyone can benefit from it and we would love to have Martin back for more projects"

Alexis to meet with club members following the Good Friday half-marathon that the club organised in support of Alexis' fund. “It was great to finally meet the O'Mahony family and to hear about the progress
Alexis has been making. Steve and Teresa spoke warmly of the contribution the funds raised were making to Alexis progress and thanked everyone who donated to the fundraiser. On the night the club also presented Alexis with her own club jersey and claimed her as a Flesk Valley girl,” said club official Donal Kelly. “Thanks to Tadhg Kelly for organising a great evening and to Mark Doe and the

Killarney allocated €604,505 for public outdoor dining | By Sean Moriarty The plan to place council operated outdoor dining on Kenmare Place took a step closer to reality this week. On Wednesday Fáilte Ireland revealed that 38 Municipal Districts were successful in their funding applications. Killarney is set to receive €604,505 under the scheme which is managed by the national tourism promotion body. “The aim of this Scheme is to support
tourism and hospitality jobs and help businesses develop new ways of catering for domestic and international tourists outdoors. Access to outdoor dining facilities will continue to be a key part of industry recovery as we look forward to 2022 and beyond,” said Minister for Tourism Catherine Martin at Wednesday’s announcement. Elected members of Killarney Municipal District are scheduled to meet in the coming weeks and more details of the project will be revealed after this meeting.

Construction of pedestrian underpass on Bypass road set for next year The construction of a new pedestrian and cyclist underpass crossing the Bypass Road near the Lewis Road junction could begin next year. However, the advancement of the project depends on a lot of things like land acquisitions and design works. A Kerry County Council official gave an update to elected members at Wednesday’s Killarney Municipal Meeting. “Consultations are ongoing with the
landowners at a newly identified location for this facility. A topographical survey of the site has recently been completed and an underground utility survey is scheduled to take place in September,” the official said. “It is hoped that the statutory consent notice for the new will be published in Q4 2021. On obtaining the statutory consent, the land acquisition for the overall scheme will commence and the Tender Documents will be prepared with a view to commencing construction in 2022.”

Minister opens new €3.8m 20-unit social housing development in Rathmore It was a busy itinerary for the Minister for Housing, Local Government and Heritage, Mr Darragh O’Brien TD today (Monday) as he visited numerous projects and developments in Killarney, Farranfore, Barraduff, Rathmore and Tralee.
OFFICIAL OPENING: Minister for Housing, Local Government and Heritage, Mr Darragh O’Brien TD, officially opened, together with Minister for Education Norma Foley TD, the new €3.8m 20-unit social housing development in Rathmore, Láthair na Mánach, on Monday, with Cathaoirleach Kerry County Council, Cllr. Jimmy Moloney. Also included from left: Cllr. Niall Kelleher, Deputy Michael Healy-Rae TD, Chief Executive Kerry County Council, Moira Murrell, Deputy Danny Healy-Rae TD, and Cathaoirleach Killarney Municipal District Cllr. Marie Moloney. Photo: Valerie O'Sullivan
Chief among the events on the agenda was the official opening by Minister O’Brien and Minister for Education Norma Foley TD of the new €3.8m 20-unit social housing development in Rathmore, Láthair na Mánach and the official opening of An Carrigín, a 28-unit social housing development in Tralee
which involved an investment of €5m. Minister O’Brien also toured the Island of Geese site in Tralee as well as the Áras Phádraig site in Killarney which are currently being developed by Kerry County Council. “I was delighted to visit County Kerry and to see first-hand the number of
housing projects which are currently in development," speaking during his visit, Minister O’Brien, said. "Having just launched ‘Housing for All’, the Government’s new housing plan for Ireland, it’s particularly exciting to see a wide range of projects which will provide much needed homes for people. It was also important for me to visit Farranfore and to reaffirm Government’s commitment to the investment in water services infrastructure in Kerry. There are numerous water and wastewater projects at various stages of development all across Kerry which I know people are dependent on. The funding provided by my Department under the Urban Regeneration and Development Fund (URDF) is helping to further enhance the offering of both Killarney and Tralee, two fantastic towns with a huge tourism offering. All in all it was a great trip to the ‘Kingdom’ and I am looking forward to coming back to see even more progress on the projects currently in train.” In addition to the opening of these estates, Minister O’Brien also paid a visit to a number of housing developments which are currently under construction in Rock Road, Killarney and Lohercannon, Tralee, as well as visiting the
Co-operative Housing Ireland development in Barraduff and the Clúid development in Armagh House, Killarney, which contains accommodation for people in urgent housing need. The Minister’s schedule also consisted of presentations on and visits to the sites of the Killarney and Tralee Urban Regeneration Development Fund (URDF) Projects, both of which were included in URDF funding announcements by Minister O’Brien in March. That March funding announcement of €16.06m for the Destination Killarney Project allows for public realm improvements and a traffic management strategy to expand and diversify the town’s core and link it more closely to the National Park, while also regenerating the Áras Phádraig site. The funding announcement of €15.93m for Tralee allows for the completion of the Town Centre Public Realm, further develop the Island of Geese site and support major areas of intervention for Tralee in relation to its economic growth. Kerry County Council Chief Executive Moira Murrell and Council officials briefed the Minister on the scope and progress of both URDF projects, and their potential impact to Tralee and Killarney. In welcoming the Minister to the county, Cathaoirleach of Kerry County Council, Cllr Jimmy Moloney pointed to the significant housing construction programme being undertaken by the local authority. “With the announcement by the Minister on Thursday of the Government’s new 'Housing for All' programme, we are confident that the work that Kerry County Council is carrying out in relation to the provision of social housing will continue to grow. I am also delighted that Minister O’Brien was able to see the progress of the significant URDF projects in Tralee and Killarney and their potential impact and that these will continue to be supported.”

Team Hope requires a local coordinator for its Christmas Shoebox Appeal Leading Irish charity Team Hope is looking to recruit a Local Team Coordinator/Office Liaison in Killarney to help manage its popular Christmas Shoebox Appeal. LAUNCH: Jordan Lee (Paralympian) who launched the new Toyota Yaris Cross Hybrid at Kellihers Toyota Tralee on Monday. Photo: Joe Hanley
EXCLUSIVE
Jordan Lee’s first public appearance since returning from Tokyo Paralympic hero Jordan Lee, fresh from his Tokyo appearance, unveiled two brand new Toyota models at Kelliher’s Garage, Tralee on Monday morning. | By Sean Moriarty A special Toyota roadshow took place at their Rathass premises where members of the public and local celebrities were invited to see the new cars for the first time in Kerry. Kelliher’s Garage, Tralee, was one of the first Toyota garages in Ireland to display the all-new Yaris Cross SUV and the RAV4 Plug In Hybrid. Lee is a brand ambassador for Toyota and drives a sporty CH-R himself. “The aesthetics of the Yaris alone is just fantastic,” he told the Killarney Advertiser.
The well-known Shoebox Appeal involves schools, communities and businesses donating gift-filled shoeboxes to children affected by poverty in Eastern Europe and Africa. Local Team Coordinators are integral to the success of the Appeal as they help to sort and send shoeboxes that have been donated in their area. The successful candidate will be responsible for overseeing the day-to-day activities of the Killarney team and checking centre, being the main point of contact for the general public and the Team Hope office for your team, promoting the Christmas Shoebox Appeal within their local area, and liaising with local schools and drop off points to help deliver shoe-
boxes. "The Christmas Shoebox Appeal is all about communities coming together to build shoeboxes and bring joy to children who need it most," Team Hope’s National Shoebox Appeal Manager, Jonathan Douglas, said. “We are looking for a passionate local team coordinator who can drive the Appeal in schools, clubs and businesses in Killarney to help deliver as many shoeboxes and smiles on children’s faces as we can in time for Christmas - every shoebox counts." If you are over 18 years of age and be able to commit approximately 20 hours a week for the duration of the three month Appeal, Team Hope would love to hear from you. For more information about the Team Hope Christmas Shoebox Appeal, or to get involved visit www.teamhope.ie or visit Volunteer Ireland.
“It is a very versatile car and not as flashy as my own C-HR, it will suit people looking for a subtle car.” It was the Killarney hero’s first public appearance since he returned from Tokyo last week. “I did not win a medal, but even if I did, I don’t think that would have been my highlight,” he added. “Being selected as the flagbearer for the opening ceremony was my highlight. When you think about it, only 30 or so people have had that honour and I must be the first Kerry man to lead an Irish team into an Olympic Stadium.”
No dates given for Finnegan’s Cross plans | By Sean Moriarty Plans for the alignment of the notoriously dangerous Finnegan’s Cross will go on public display. However, Kerry County Council has not put a date on when the plans will go on display. The junction has been the scene of several serious accidents – some fatal – and only last month several members of
one family were taken to hospital following a crash there. In February this year the Local Authority received grant approval of €200,000 for road improvement works at the junction. Mayor Marie Moloney, resident of the area is getting increasingly frustrated at the lack of progress at the dangerous junction. “I am requesting that the design plans for the safety measures at Finnegan’s
Cross be brought before the members and an update be given. This is ongoing now for quite a considerable length of time and the danger to drivers and cyclists still remains,” she told Wednesday’s Killarney Municipal District meeting. In response, Kerry County Council said: “We have completed a design to address the road Safety issues at this junction and we are in consultation with the relevant land owners regarding this de-
sign. Given the size of the project, the Local Authority will be required to proceed through Part 8 of the Planning & Development Regulations 2001-2018. Prior to going out on Public Display the Final Design will be presented to the members of Killarney MD. In the meantime, the Local Authority will provide additional road markings to provide advance warning of the junction.”

Fundraisers nets 16 buses for Kerry Parents and Friends Kerry Parents and Friends unveiled their new fleet of buses – the fruits of a long term fundraising campaign – on Saturday last. Kerry Parents and Friends ‘Buy a Bus Campaign’, led by Agnes Rooney and ably assisted by Conor Hennigan, Tony Darmody, Emer Corridan, Ciara Roche and AustIn Rooney, held a thank you day
at the organisation’s Port Road headquarters. “It was a campaign run to achieve one goal, to replenish the ageing, dilapidated fleet of buses for the organisation by asking for our support through barn dances, golf classics, gatherings of all descriptions, corporate sponsorships, club donations, and support from families and friends,” Chief Executive Marie Linehan
told the Killarney Advertiser. “'The Buy a Bus Campaign' did its job. It raised a staggering €242,829, a fantastic result! A total of 16 vehicles were procured primarily through these funds but also through donations of vehicles by supporters of the campaign. “The organisation was keen to thank the 'Buy a Bus' Committee but they also wish to thank all their supporters near and
far, who made the dream happen and ultimately made the lives of those using their transport a little easier and more comfortable. “Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, it was not possible to open the event to the public but they want their message spread far and wide. “It’s huge achievement in what was a highly competitive field of 128 players and a huge reward where the hours of dedication and practice paid off. From 5-2 behind he battled back and managed to scrape over the line and win in a extremely never wrecking deciding frame by 7-6 against Raymond Stockman from Antrim,” said Niall Marshall, chairperson of the Kerry Pool Association. Kerry A reached the Team All-Ireland Final intermediate section against Ar-
magh B on Sunday evening and unfortunately came up short against a great Armagh outfit by 14-12. Having got off to a bad start being 7-1 behind, Kerry managed to win 9 of the next 13 frames and were only 1 behind at 11-10. It went down to the last 2 tables where Armagh got over the line by a great break and clearance leaving Kerry with no opportunity to take the victory. “It was a fantastic showing all week where Kerry beat Limerick, Offaly, Donegal, Louth and Laois on our way to the final. It was a fantastic achievement getting to the final in what is a highly competitive competition,” added Marshall.

"I've travelled abroad to make important connections and brought these collaborators home to Kerry. Partnering with Kerry Airport enables KIFF to do likewise; to make meaningful connections with an international film community so that we can offer the richest festival we can.”

Kerry International Film Festival takes flight with Kerry Airport Kerry International Film Festival (KIFF) have a new headline sponsor partnership with Kerry Airport. Running for its 22nd year, the festival will take place October 14 – 17 this year and this new partnership has provided a significant boost for the festival. A common goal of both Kerry Airport and KIFF is the promotion of Kerry on a global scale, and this has played a significant role in the development of this collaboration. "The Kerry International Film Festival is a highlight of any calendar," CEO of Kerry Airport, John Mulhern, said. "The benevolent and lasting relationship between the arts and County Kerry is one which is acclaimed all over the globe, in particular, the film industry. Remember when Jimmy Stewarts’ Charles Lindbergh
finally spots land, Skellig Michael and the Iveragh Peninsula, a historic event in aviation and experienced by us all through the wonders of film. Thus, how could Kerry Airport resist the opportunity to partner with KIFF and with them celebrate both renowned and emerging talent in their craft. We look forward to October with much anticipation.” To celebrate Kerry Airport's invaluable support, KIFF have introduced The Kerry Airport Take Flight Award. This award will recognise up and coming new talent in the film industry and is a welcome addition to the festival's coveted awards, which also includes The Maureen O’Hara Award, The Best of Kerry award, The Best Irish Narrative Feature award, amongst others. “The team at KIFF are very excited about
The Coronas announce INEC gig It’s not Christmas in Killarney without The Coronas making an appearance at the Gleneagle INEC Arena and they return for what has become an annual gig on December 28. Following on from 18 months of an enforced break from live shows and dealing with an unfortunate band-name given the pandemic, they persevered and released their new album in August 2020. 'True Love Waits’ was an instant suc-
cess and secured the No. 1 spot in the Irish charts beating Taylor Swift and Fontaines DC. The album also became the fastest selling Irish album of 2020. The three-piece band, Danny O’Reilly, Graham Knox, and Conor Egan from Dublin, have released five studio albums and are renowned as one of the best live Irish acts and have become an integral part of the Christmas line-up in the Gleneagle INEC Arena, Killarney. Tickets from €35.50 for their Gleneagle INEC Arena gig went on sale yesterday (Thursday) from www.inec.ie.
the collaboration with Kerry Airport," Board Chairperson, Grace O’Donnell, speaking about the new partnership, said. "We see this as a natural progressive partnership. For most of our visitors to the festival, stepping off the plane at Kerry Airport is their first taste of Kerry. Kerry Airport is the gateway to Kerry and we feel KIFF is the gateway to film in the county. We look forward to working with CEO of Kerry Airport John Mulhern along with his team at the airport to make KIFF one of the most important film festivals in the world and to continuously support Kerry as a destination." Script writer and Kerry native, Ailbhe Keogan is also a board member of KIFF. Her latest script 'Joyride', featuring Oscar winning actress Olivia Coleman was
KIFF is going from strength to strength despite the challenges that came with COVID-19. Last year the festival went exclusively online due to the restrictions, and as a result KIFF gained over 17,000+ live streams throughout the four days of the festival. Additionally, KIFF is included in the top 100 film festivals in the world where it has gained a 5-star rating and they are Ireland’s fourth biggest festival. This year, KIFF 2021 were delighted to receive the highest number of submissions in the festival’s history. Working hard alongside Cinema Killarney and several invaluable local businesses and sponsors, KIFF is hugely appreciative of the support and goodwill they receive from the people of Kerry and strive to deliver a state-of-the-art festival that supports and promotes both industry talent and local engagement. KIFF’s new partnership with Kerry Airport has made a massive difference to the festival and they are looking forward to exciting times ahead. CEO of the Irish Film & Television Academy (IFTA) and KIFF Board member said: “We have a wealth of creative talent here in Kerry and we want to ensure that they have every opportunity to grow and succeed internationally. The filmmaking industry in Ireland has become an important business for the Irish economy, KIFF and Kerry Airport can together showcase the filmmaking talent and stunning scenery our wonderful country has to offer."

Concerns over 999 phone coverage in the Black Valley Residents of the Black Valley are calling on all agencies to come together to ensure a reliable phone and a fibre to the home broadband service are provided as a matter of urgency. As Ireland's most remote destination, it was the last corner of the country to get electricity in 1976. While welcoming ongoing initiatives, the tight-knit Black Valley Community point out, that, there is no mobile phone signal and the home phone service currently available in the area does not enable many residents to dial 999 or 112 for emergency service. With ever increasing numbers of visitors to the area throughout the year and the lack of even basic amenities, they say that this could result in the lives of both residents and visitors to the area being lost in the event of an emergency. In addition to a reliable phone service, the group are also calling for the installation of fibre to the home broadband as promised by the National Broadband Ireland. They note that some residents in the valley were forced to rent premises in Killarney town during the covid restrictions in order to be able to “work from home”. This is clearly not sustainable for either residents or businesses in the valley going forward they note.
The group have put forward proposals that the NBI should link up with Siro in order to be able to quickly provide a reliable fibre to the home broadband service in the valley through the existing ESB Network. Connection points are available from either Molls Gap or The Brida Valley they point out. While noting that work is ongoing by Eir to install new masts in the valley to enhance phone services, they have called for all service providers to come together to share this infrastructure so that customers of all mobile phone service providers can benefit from a reliable service. Spokesperson for the group Ann Marie O’Donoghue pointed out that the area was one of the last places in the county to get electricity and they certainly don’t want to be last again when it comes to proper phone and broadband services. “There is a strong community in the valley that is working to develop businesses and facilities including the local school and we need proper phone and broadband services as soon as possible to support the long term viability of our

community” she said. In addition to this work, the community is also in the process of developing a community managed heritage centre on a site that is being provided to them by a local farming family.
“This project could be an example of good practice in efforts to regenerate and guarantee the sustainable future of rural communities everywhere” Ann Marie has welcomed initial funding from KCC to begin work on this project.

The 600mm main is part of the spine of the network in Kerry, supplying water from Killarney to Tralee, Castleisland, Castlemaine and surrounding areas. The section in Farranfore has burst numerous times in recent years. Works began last week on the project. Minister Norma Foley and Minister Darragh O'Brien visited the site on Monday to meet staff involved in delivering the project and view their work first hand. The works are being carried out during evening and night-time hours – from 7pm to 7am Monday evening to Friday morning and will continue until the end of October. To ensure as little disruption to homes, businesses, commuters and
holiday makers as possible, Irish Water, Kerry County Council and our contractor, Ward and Burke, have agreed that the works will be carried out by night. The N22 Killarney to Tralee road will have a one lane stop-go system in place from 7pm-7am, Monday to Friday from August 30 until the end of October 2021, with the road reopening fully during the day. No works will be carried out over the weekend for the duration of the works schedule. “We are delighted to welcome Minister Norma Foley and Minister Darragh O'Brien to site today to hear first-hand about our progress in delivering this project. These works are part of Irish Water’s national Leakage Reduction Programme and began last Monday night and we have made great progress in the first week, with 190m of the 1km of new trunk main already installed,” said Steven Blennerhassett , the Regional Delivery Lead with Irish Water.

RECENT GRADUATES
Ciara Dennehy and Darragh O’Connell are recent graduates of the Liebherr Engineering Scholarship Programme and both are now in full time employment with Liebherr Container Cranes as graduate automation engineers. Ciara, a mechatronics graduate from Munster Technological University, explained her experience of the programme. “The Liebherr Scholarship Programme has offered me a great amount of support and resources. With the promise of summer work each year, and placement it allowed me to better dedicate myself to my studies. It is great benefit, when you can see in practice, how the theory that you study in class is applied in industry. It has also allowed me to explore career possibilities, by providing opportunities to work in different areas. Now that I am working as an Automation Engineer, it is clear to see how well
this programme has prepared me for this role and just how innovative Liebherr is. We are continuously developing new ground-breaking systems and software. This makes the prospect of each project more challenging and exciting. This really is what makes the work so enjoyable, there is always something new to learn, and problems to solve.” Darragh armed with his degree in electronic computer engineering from National University of Ireland, Galway echoed these sentiments “I would definitely encourage all interested students to apply for the programme. It was a real benefit during my studies. My fees were paid, I had guaranteed meaningful summer work, and now that I have graduated, I am able to continue working with Liebherr as an Automation Engineer. My work in Liebherr is exciting, Liebherr are leaders in the field of container handling. This exciting field is undergoing rapid development and at Liebherr we are at the forefront of technological advancement and design. In addition, sustainability is key consideration for our customers, so our engineers also get to work on the development of hybrid, battery and alternative power systems. We develop all of these technologies in house and the next few years will bring many exciting developments. At Liebherr, we give prospective engineers the opportunity to put their college learnings into practice and this is fundamental to their development and education.”

health and fitness We’ve found Activate clients usually like to refocus on their goals as summer draws to a close, so here are some tips for autumn health and fitness. Something about the season change always motivates people to create a routine that usually lasts from now until the holidays. With all the change and flux over the past 18 months, your routine might be a little different this year. However, that’s no reason to avoid revisiting your goals. As always, we’re here to help. At Activate we’re challenging ourselves to do Goal Review Sessions with as many members as possible in the next six weeks. We’d love to sit down with you to make a plan. If there are any new challenges in your life - working from home, lack of child care, etc - we can help you find ways to prioritise your health and fitness. Here are a few simple things to keep making progress:
1. SCHEDULE YOUR WORKOUTS
Things are going to get busy in September so pull out your calendar and schedule your workouts. Once you have them booked, treat them like important appointments that can’t be moved. This is key to building your routine as kids go back to school and job stress increases.
2. GET FITNESS OUT OF THE WAY EARLIER IN THE DAY
Most people find that getting a workout in early in the day “sets them up”. This can be true, but having that non-negotiable time is vital regardless of whether its morning or evening. If you tend to get to the afternoon slump and the idea of a workout slips down the list of priorities and sometimes doesn’t happen at all, start working out before work and stop it becoming an issue!
3. PACK YOUR GYM BAG THE NIGHT BEFORE
This is a small thing, but it’s super effective. If you’re scrambling in the morning, the kids are crazy, and you’re running late, you might say “forget it” to fitness if you have to pack a bag. But if it’s sitting by the door, all you have to do is grab it. Better yet, put it in the car, so there’s no chance you forget it. An emergency measure: Always leave some “backup” clean workout gear and shoes in the car or at the office, so you’re covered if you
ever forget the gym bag.
4. PRIORITISE NUTRITION AND REST
If you’re feeling burned out, you can do wonders for your health just by eating well and getting a little extra sleep. Resist the urge to order the 10pm pizza. Get healthy meals planned and then get to bed on time - or even earlier if you’re feeling run down. If you absolutely can’t find time to work out, sleep and nutrition become even more important.
5. GET SOME HEALTHY SNACKS
Many trips through the drive-through are caused by hunger and desperation. You can often avoid them by getting some healthy options in place so you’re prepared when hunger strikes. Maybe keep a box of low-sugar, high-protein bars at the office, or put a few healthy frozen meals on an “emergency shelf” in the freezer. You can always keep fresh fruits and veggies on hand, but a few non-perishable backups will help you double down on healthy eating when time is tight.
6. TELL YOUR COACH HOW YOU’RE DOING
We are here for you! If you’re having a great day, let us know. If you’re struggling, we want to know about that too because communication is critical. This will help us tailor our service to give you exactly what you need each day. Now is the best time of year to set yourself up for solid routine as winter draws closer. If the pandemic has thought us anything, it’s that health and fitness should be an integral part of our lives.
Question: What grants and supports are available to students commencing third level education? ANSWER: It’s that time of year where parents and their school leaving children are preparing for college for the first time. The main financial support for students or their parents is the Student Grant from SUSI (Student Universal Support Ireland). SUSI typically accepts late applications up until November. This is a means tested grant which may cover the fees (student contribution) and provide maintenance. The limits that apply to the grant vary, but if the student was coming from a family with less than four dependent children, in order to qualify for the maximum rate of grant the total net income in the previous tax year would have to have been €39,875 or less. That refers to both the parent's income and the student's income, however €4,500 of the student’s income which they earn outside term time e.g. during the summer will be disregarded.
PUP
If the student was getting the PUP payment because they lost their parttime job due to the pandemic, this is taken into account. Currently there are no disregards allowed for PUP payments. If there is more than one student attending college from the same household, the limit may be increased by €4,830.
MAXIMUM STUDENT GRANT
There are actually two different maximum rates of grant. There are referred to as the adjacent and non-adjacent rate. The adjacent rate is for students living within 45km of the college and the non-adjacent rate is for students living more than 45km from the college. The adjacent rate is €3,025. The non-adjacent rate is €1,125. There has always been a special higher rate of grant for disadvantaged students.
STUDENT ASSISTANCE FUND
Yes, separate from the Student Grant from SUSI the colleges have access to the Student Assistance Fund. Students can apply directly through their college for assistance with expenses such as books or laptops. Typically, this involves completing an application form and going for a short interview in the
college. There are no set amounts of funding under this scheme. The college will assess each application on its own merits.
RENTING FOR THE FIRST TIME
Don’t be tempted to pay a deposit or sign a tenancy agreement until you have seen the property. If you are signing a tenancy agreement check if you want to live in the property for the time period stated on the agreement, check for early break clauses. Make sure you have correct contact details for the landlord. If you chose to leave the property early you may lose your deposit.
DEPOSITS
The landlord should only retain the deposit or part of it to cover any damage to the property beyond normal wear and tear. The tenant should take pictures of the property before they move out as evidence of the condition they left the property in.
RENTS
There are different rules depending on whether the property is in a Rent Pressure Zone or not. A Rent Pressure Zone (RPZ) is an area where rents cannot be increased by more than general inflation. At the beginning of a new tenancy in a RPZ, a landlord is required to provide the tenant, in writing, with the amount of rent that was last set. For a tenancy not located in a Rent Pressure Zones a landlord may increase the rent in line with market value once every two years. _____________________________________________ During COVID-19, you can find comprehensive integrated information online at citizensinformation.ie/covid19/ and you can get daily updates on what’s changed on Twitter at @ citizensinfo. A WEEKLY ROUND-UP OF NEWS • VIEWS FROM KERRY AND AROUND THE WORLD SUPPORT
KILLARNEY
INSPIRED BY DANNY CASEY
Explosive launch for 'Alpha' rocket The maiden flight of Firefly Aerospace's new 'Alpha' rocket resulted in an explosion only minutes after takeoff.
Over 2,000 Kerry volunteers joined the National Spring Clean campaign The National Spring Clean is Ireland’s official anti-litter campaign and over the past 21 years, the initiative has been highlighted the collective responsibility we share in tackling and preventing our national litter problem. National Spring Clean is operated by the Environmental Education Unit of An Taisce in partnership with Local Authorities and supported by the De-
partment of Communications, Climate Action and Environment. The National Spring Clean ran from April to the end of August. "This year we had the longest and biggest National Spring Clean campaign ever and we want to thank all the groups and individuals around Ireland who joined us. "While waiting for Spring Clean 2022, there are several ways in which communities and individuals around Ireland
can keep getting involved and do their bit for our environment. "For example, we encourage people to do a #2minutestreetclean every time they are out and about. Moreover, we are joining An Taisce’s Clean Coasts Programme for the Big Beach Clean and we are inviting volunteers to register and tackle marine litter at its source,” said National Spring Clean Manager, Emlyn Cullen.
It is funded by the Department of Tourism, Culture, Arts, Gaeltacht, Sports and Media's Cooperation with NI Funding Scheme. Having been closed to visitors for many months, many of Ireland’s museums have once again opened their doors to the public, and are offering a range of exciting and safe experiences from free entry to special free-flow tours exploring ‘hidden histories’. Kerry County Museum is participating in
the initiative, and will offer free admission and activity booklets for accompanied children, with an admission charge of €5 for adults. “Our museums are important community spaces, where people of all generations and interests can come together in person to reflect, learn and have fun," Chairperson of the Irish Museums Association and Head of Collections and Learning at the National Museum of Ireland, Dr Audrey Whitty said. "We are excited to
Small launch company Firefly’s Alpha rocket - which is 10 storeys tall - exploded mid-flight minutes after a clean liftoff during its first attempt to reach space from the Vandenberg Space Force base in California on Thursday last. The rocket was terminated, Space Force officials said, as it began tipping sideways off course just after reaching supersonic speeds. Firefly said it’s working with regulators to investigate the cause of the failure. "Alpha experienced an anomaly during first stage ascent that resulted in the loss of the vehicle. As we gather more information, additional details will be provided," the company tweeted. The launch was dangerous because it was Firefly's maiden mission, thus failure wasn't unexpected. The rocket began swinging to the side, tilting horizontally, two and a half minutes after liftoff, when it fell short of attaining its maximum aerodynamic pressure. Firefly said it achieved a number of key mission objectives despite the explosion, including a successful first stage ignition, clean liftoff from the pad, and “progression to supersonic speed”. The company has said that flight data will help them move forward with the rocket’s testing and development.
Free museum entry this weekend A special programme of museum events will take place in Kerry and across the country this weekend to encourage visitors back into museums. The initiative titled 'Museums Now' is being brought to the public by the Irish Museums Association and the NI Museums Council, which jointly represent more than 150 museums and collection-based organisations across the island of Ireland.
be welcoming people back through our doors, to rediscover the collections and see first-hand the work our museums have been carrying out during closure to ensure a safe and enjoyable visit; from new temporary exhibitions and offerings, to putting in place measures to protect our visitors." World's first Internet safety animation for kids This week, the first episode of 'Alva’s World', a new Irish animation series which aims to teach children about online safety and empathy, was broadcast on RTÉjr. Created by award-winning Irish animation studio Kavaleer Productions, 'Alva’s World' is a world’s first for TV as it places Internet safety at the heart of programming for younger children. The series will also be broadcast on Sky Kids from October 18. At a time when many kids are online more than ever before, 'Alva’s World' explores themes that have been developed in conjunction with CyberSafeKids and Crandall Consulting in the format of magical tales to teach kids about appropriate behaviour online, including interaction, as well as preparing them for common childhood problems they may encounter through social media. Recent research by CyberSafeKids shows that even by age eight, almost 50% of kids have some form of Inter-

net accessible device and 45% are already using some form of social media. “Alva's World is an exciting new project which we at CyberSafeKids were happy to have been able to be involved in," Philip Arneill from Irish Charity CyberSafeKids said. "It's an engaging, direct and age-appropriate way to target younger children, through a medium they love, to start developing healthy online habits and responsible digital citizenship as they begin their online journeys.”

Air Ambulance launch appeal for funds The Irish Community Air Ambulance has launched a fundraising campaign as part of International Air Ambulance Week and is asking “What if there was no Air Ambulance?” The organisation, which is Ireland’s first and only charity-funded HEMS Air Ambulance, is being called to more missions than ever. The helicopter was launched 388 times during the first eight months of the year with July 2021 one of its busiest months to date. Crews were tasked to 57 separate incidents in eight counties, during July, at a cost of almost €200,000. Each mission costs an average of €3,500, all of which has to be raised or donated. The Irish Community Air Ambulance has released a video highlighting the importance of the service and is asking members of the public to help it to save lives by visiting the website www.communityairambulance.ie and making a donation. It is also asking schools and businesses to get involved in International Air Ambulance Week by wearing red or yellow and making a donation today (Friday), or any day during September. The Helicopter Emergency Medical Service (HEMS) works in partnership with the National Ambulance Service and is
ready to respond to serious incidents and medical emergencies from its base in Rathcoole in North Cork seven days a week. “We bring hope when it’s needed most," Micheál Sheridan, CEO of the Irish Community Air Ambulance, said. "Over the last two years we have been tasked to more than one thousand missions which proves that our organisation is a vital life-changing service. Demand for our service is continuing to increase which means that our costs are also increasing. Fundraising during COVID-19 has been extremely challenging which is why we’re issuing this appeal and asking people can you help fund our next mission?” The Irish Community Air Ambulance is on track to complete more than five hundred missions this year and is predicting a 10% increase since 2020. Cork and Kerry are the counties most likely to require the service however, the Air Ambulance is regularly called to other counties, and incidents range from road traffic collisions, cardiac arrests and farming accidents, to equestrian incidents and falls from heights. To make a donation visit communityairambulance.ie. You can also donate €4 by texting FLIGHT to 50300.
Following the ruling, WhatsApp said in a statement it is "committed to providing a secure and private service". "We have worked to ensure the information we provide is transparent and
comprehensive and will continue to do so. We disagree with the decision today regarding the transparency we provided to people in 2018 and the penalties are entirely disproportionate."
WhatsApp set to appeal €225 million fine After being found to have broken EU data protection regulations, WhatsApp was fined a record €225 million. The corporation breached severe laws in respect to openness of data exchanged with other firms controlled by parent giant Facebook, according to an inquiry by Ireland's privacy authority. The Data Protection Commission said it was also ordering WhatsApp to take
"remedial actions", so that its processing complies with EU rules. WhatsApp stated that the amount was excessive and that it would file an appeal. The announcement brings to a close an inquiry into the messaging service that began in December 2018, following the implementation of EU data protection laws known as the General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR).

GARDEN MAGIC
Gardening - By Debby Looney

Ideal ground cover plants Most large gardens have ‘that patch’ which is inaccessible, has bad soil, is on a ditch – a spot where all you really want is some dense ground cover to keep down the weeds. This week I hope to give you some ideas. Firstly, as with all plants, the growing conditions need to be suitable. Often they need to be shade tolerant, as ground cover is used under trees, on shady banks and so on. Equally, they need to be drought tolerant for the same reasons. When planting your ground cover make sure to dig a large hole, up to three times the size of the pot. Fill back in with good quality top soil mixed with a rich compost – just to give them a good start in life! Water until they are rooted in, especially if under trees. In shady spots, ivy is an ideal ground cover plant. It spreads quickly and has a glossy green leaf. I think it is an invaluable plant even though I know there is a general aversion to it! Cotoneaster is another excellent plant, hardy, able to cope with any conditions, and fast growing. ‘Queen of Carpets’ is very low growing, and tends to root easily along its way. Cotoneaster dammeri is very quick to cover ground, with long, trailing stems of up to 3m in length. It only grows to a height of 45cm. Cotoneasters have white flowers in spring, which are very popular with pollinators, and red berries in autumn, which are very popular with birds!
SOME MORE SUGGESTIONS
Persicaria family members are also
ideal as ground cover plants, typically evergreen or semi-evergreen with pink flower spikes. All varieties have dense foliage making them excellent weed blockers. Persicaria amplexicaulis grows to a height of about 30cm, though the flowers float above the foliage at 60cm. ‘Firetail’ has pink flowers which are a deep burgundy near the top, ‘Firedance’ has bright cerise flowers which contrast beautifully with the foliage, while ‘September Spires’ tends more toward a muted purple. Persicaria runcinate ‘Purple Fantasy’ is grown mainly for its foliage, which is heart shaped with purple and silvery markings. Persicaria affinis ‘Superba’ is a common plant in older gardens, but is very functional. Its evergreen foliage keep weeds down, while its flowers, which start off white and mature to rose, add cheer to even the darkest corners. Vinca, or periwinkle, is another useful plant, especially on a dry site. Evergreen, with deep green or variegated foliage, it produces white through to purple flowers almost continuously throughout the year. Vinca minor is a low ground hugging plant as opposed to its taller cousin, vinca major, which, though a ground cover, is not quite as good at keeping weeds out. Finally, an excellent ground cover which is evergreen in all but the coldest winters, is Brunnera. It has large, heart shaped leaves with a silvery sheen and bright blue forget-me-not like flowers in the spring. It grows well in moist shade.

New programme launched to support hotel industry
South Kerry Skillnet, along with the Irish Accommodation Services Institute (IASI) and Munster Technological University, Tralee have launched a national Accommodation Supervisory Management programme. It is a free management development programme to aid post-pandemic recovery in the hospitality sector by training the unemployed in much sought-after skills, with the aim of finding them employment. Applications are now open for the programme, which is aimed at previous or potential accommodation managers and those who are unemployed with relevant experience in the industry. The programme is funded through Skills Connect, an initiative from Skillnet Ireland, and was developed in partnership with enterprise, to enhance cross-sector employability and support those who have lost their jobs. The Accommodation Supervisory Management (Level 6 Special Purpose Award) will run online over a 12-week period commencing on September 27, for approximately two days a week (five hours a day). South Kerry Skillnet Network Manager Aoife O’Reilly said the course will address skills gaps in the industry. “The tourism and hospitality sectors continue to deal with the many chal-
lenges that COVID-19 has brought. This programme has been developed by South Kerry Skillnet as a response to requests from the hotel industry for a focused programme in Accommodation Supervisory Management. South Kerry Skillnet is delighted to offer this national online programme which will be providing management and supervisory training to the hospitality industry, giving businesses the tools to support their teams and get them ready for the recovery.” Mary Rose Stafford Munster Technological University added that “At Munster Technological University we are conscious of the need to support affected sectors in responding to the pandemic". "Retraining people for the ‘new normal’ is easily said and often difficult to implement. We look forward to working with South Kerry Skillnet to offer this online national Accommodation Supervisory Management programme. This is a practical and actionable programme that will help address a current need within the hospitality sector.” To find out more about this programme or to view South Kerry Skillnet’s full range of programmes, please visit www.kerryskillnet.ie or call Aoife on 066 9762477. MOTORSHOW: Killarney Valley Classic and Vintage Club members and supporters John Coffey, John Courtney, Thomas Wharton, Paddy Lawlor, Tom Leslie, Pascal Deloris, Fiona Carroll and Jonathan Harrig and the event launch last Wednesday evening. Picture: Aaron Fleming
Racecourse course revs up for motor show Car lovers are in for a treat on Sunday, September 19 when two of Killarney’s best-loved motoring events come together for a car show at the racecourse. Killarney Valley Classic and Vintage Club has joined forces with Cars N’Coffee Killarney to stage an event that is open to: “Vintage, classic, retro and modern cars,” according to event organisers.
Killarney Valley Classic and Vintage Club usually holds its annual show at Killarney Racecourse but the event has not run since June 2019 as a result of the pandemic. Cars N’Coffee Killarney held one low-key event last summer after hosting successful monthly meetings in 2019. Now, the two shows are coming together to create one big motoring event that will cater for all aspects of car culture in the
Killarney area. Over 200 cars, from the 1930s to modern times will be on display at the Ross Road venue. Tom Leslie, of the Killarney Valley Classic and Vintage Club is a member of the organising committee. Speaking to the Killarney Advertiser at a special launch event on Wednesday night he said he was looking forward to re-starting the car scene in Killarney.
“It is great to be back in action and we are delighted to be linking with Cars’NCoffee to create one big motor show in the heart of the town,” he said. “We will have everything from the 1930s to the 2000s, featuring vintage, classic, retro and modern cars.” The event will raise funds for St. Francis' Special School in Beaufort.
Car run raises €25k for Jack and Jill Foundation Siobhan Reen, the Killarney Jack and Jill Foundation nurse, has praised a group of car enthusiasts who raised over €25,000 at the weekend. Over 40 supercars took part in the Bumble 1000 road run. After setting off from Dublin on Friday morning the crews overnighted in Wexford and Cork before completing the run in Killarney. The cars left Kinsale, County Cork on Sunday morning and travelled to the finish line at Killarney Racecourse via the Healy Pass and Moll’s Gap.
Hundreds of spectators waited at the Ross Road venue to see the cars cross the finish line where organisers PJ and Corina Harte told the Killarney Advertiser they had raised: “€25,000 up to this point and there is more to come in”. Siobhan Reen is a member of the Rathmore Peugeot Garage family. “I gave up the car trade to go nursing,” she told the Killarney Advertiser. “This means everything to the 396 families we help all over Ireland.” The 40 supercars included three rare Lamborghinis said to be valued at over €350,000 each.

Kerry house prices accelerate – IPAV's residential property price barometer The Institute of Professional Auctioneers and Valuers (IPAV) latest Residential Property Price Barometer shows an acceleration in house price increases over the previous six months including in Kerry. Overall IPAV’s study has found double digit growth for 3-bedroom homes in Waterford and Limerick. And close behind are Tipperary, Meath, Louth and Cavan with nine plus percent growth, followed in the eight plus percent range by County Dublin, Carlow, Dublin 15, Dublin 7 and Kildare. In Kerry three-bedroom homes increased

by 4.55pc; 4-bedrooms by 9.80pc and two-bedroom apartments by 3.70pc. Some of the area specific increases are accounted for by new blended working opportunities where people don’t have to operate from formal office settings on a full-time basis, according to IPAV’s Chief Executive Pat Davitt. “While that is an influential factor, the main driver of increasing prices is the lack of supply of homes to meet current and pent-up demand. And that is why predictions by economists and others of house price drops during the pandemic have not materialised, forecasts IPAV called into question at the time,” he said. Mr Davitt said his organisation welcomes

the Government’s new 'Housing for All' plan with a commitment to invest €4 billion per year to build 300,000 homes over the next nine years. “While the nuts and bolts of how precisely the plan is going to achieve that target remains to be seen, it is in the interest of society as a whole that the plan works because continuing house price increases at the level we are currently seeing would not be sustainable over the longer term but will not abate either until more stock comes on stream to meet supply. He said the extension of the Government’s Rebuilding Ireland Home Loan scheme from Local Authorities was welcome but it needs to be extended further
to enable all purchasers to take advantage of the 4.5 times income under that scheme, not just first-time buyers. The IPAV Residential Property Price Barometer charts house prices achieved by auctioneers, as opposed to asking prices. Mr Davitt said while that difference is always relevant it is particularly so now given the intensity of activity where, it would appear, asking and achieved prices are diverging, often to a considerable degree. He thanked members of IPAV for their contribution to the study which he said provides “real market evidence as opposed to speculation on prices”.

Leaving Cert students outside of CAO?
This week has been dominated by the release of CAO Round 1 offers and cut-off points for courses for 2021 which rose dramatically for many courses. It is important to realise that there are plenty of options to progress in your education and training that do not depend on how many Leaving Cert points you have received. As well as looking at the Available Places options on www.cao.ie, make sure to look at all the pathways open to you.
Universal Contour Body Wrap After the busy warm summer, the kids are now back to school so you might have a little extra time for some constructive pampering. Having a body wrap can be amazing for your skin, and also for inch loss and detoxing. If you're looking for a treat now that you have time as you are back to a routine, this might be the thing for you. With our renowned body wrap, you will be covered in sea clay from head to toe. The clay itself contains bentonite for excellent draining properties, magnesium sulphate for stimulation and exfoliation, magnesium chloride combats stress and fluid retention, zinc oxide which is anti-inflammatory, and sodium chloride for tightening skin. It's hypoallergenic, not tested on animals and all natural ingredients. It can be very healing on skin suffering from psoriasis or eczema, with stretch marks or loose sagging skin from losing weight
or having a baby. It's also suitable for both men and women that are looking to kick start a weight loss programme or just a feel-good treatment. Along with clay, we use a specific wrapping technique with bandages, to lift and tighten the skin and help to contour the body shape. Also, there are electrical straps with a faradic current stimulating blood flow to aid excretion of toxins which helps the anti-cellulite effect and detoxification process. Anyone that has ever tried to lose a few pounds or diet knows that a good detox sets you up to lose weight more efficiently. Finally, you are cocooned in a heated blanket, to help you sweat out any excess toxins. The heat of the blanket helps to open the pores and allows the active sea clay go in and absorb the toxins at a deeper level. Overall it is a very enjoyable and effective treatment. There is a specific three-day detox to follow directly after having the wrap.

POST LEAVING CERT COURSES
Colleges of Further Education are still accepting applications for Post Leaving Cert (PLC) courses across a huge variety of career areas and sectors so check them out this week as places are filling up. Entry to these QQI FET/FETAC courses is not based on points and once you complete them, you have the option to apply to higher education in Ireland, the UK and Europe through the many progression routes available. Approximately one in five students applying to colleges and universities through CAO each year come from the further education sector. PLCs give you a great foundation in a particular area before you have to commit to a longer undergraduate course. Details of PLCs can be found on www. fetchcourses.ie , www.careeersportal.ie www.qualifax.ie and on the websites of your local colleges of further education or local Education and Training Board (ETB). Check out www.kerrycollege.ie for an extensive range of options and help is available from their Admissions Office and Guidance Counselling staff. If you are interested in progressing onto higher education Information on progression routes see www.cao.ie.

These newer apprenticeships provide qualifications from levels 5 to 9 on the National Framework of Qualifications, which means that you can qualify to degree and masters levels in certain areas. Apprenticeships offer skills-based training with at least 50% of it taking place

They span across a range of industry sectors including business and retail, media, manufacturing, agriculture, horticulture & mariculture, care, construction, engineering, animal science, fashion and beauty, finance, ICT, hospitality, sports & leisure and logistics. Traineeships last for between six and twenty four months with at least 30% on the job training. You will find the details on https://www. solas.ie/programmes/traineeship/ and on the 16 Education and Training Board (ETB) websites located around the country including www.kerryetb.ie National Learning Network Explore the training options at the National Learning Network which has over 40 centres across the country offering specialist training and support services for students and adults who need special support. Minister congratulates 2021 Leaving Certs As students nervously opened their long awaited Leaving Cert results, they also welcomed a very special visitor to their school on Friday. Minister for Education Norma Foley visited Presentation Secondary School Castleisland to celebrate the Leaving Cert results with them. Always a day of celebration, the visit certainly made it a day to remember for all in the school. Music, dance and a guard of honour greeted the Minister as she arrived at the school. The Leaving Cert Class of 2021 were in school to share their absolute joy and contentment with the high grades achieved in what was an undoubtedly challenging school year. Speaking at the school, Minister Foley congratulated the Leaving Certificate students of 2021 for the resilience and leadership they showed throughout the last 18 months. Addressing Principal Katherina Broderick and members of the school’s Board of Management, the Minister spoke of the excellent reputation Presentation Castleisland has and how highly the school is regarded in the community. “I know the excellence in education and in care that is delivered in Presentation Secondary, here in Castleisland. I know you by reputation and it is such a high reputation,” said Minister Foley. Members of the Student Council Emily Walsh, Deirdre Moynihan and Caoimhe Scanlon presented gifts to the Minister on behalf of the school community.
The school was also chosen as the media hub for the announcement of the Leaving Cert results and a number of Presentation Castleisland Leaving Certificate students were interviewed by the assembled national media. During the interviews, the students commended the school noting in particular how their teachers walked them through the challenges they encountered during the year and noted the constant focus on student mental health by the school and the Department of Education and Skills which proved invaluable for getting them through the year. They said ‘we had the best of both worlds with the opportunity to sit the exams and take accredited grades’.
RESULTS
The Presentation girls received excellent results. One student, Siobhán Brosnan, achieved top marks of 625 points. Overall, 63% of the Leaving Cert class achieved 400 points or greater, with 29% achieving greater than 500 points and 5% achieving 600 points or more. "We were truly honoured to receive Minister Norma Foley to our school to join with us in congratulating the Class of ’21 on their achievements," Katherina Broderick, Principal, said. "I know the huge efforts made by each of these students and we are all celebrating with them on their well-deserved success, and I wish them continued success in the future in the whatever path they choose to take.”
HONOUR: Students formed a guard of honour during the Minister's visit to Presentation Castleisland on Friday last.
VISIT: Padraig Kelliher (Deputy Principal), Minister Foley, Katherina Broderick (Principal), and Pierce Dargan (Assistant Principal) pictured at Presentation Castleisland on Friday last during the Minister for Education's visit.

Weldon reappointed as Ireland head coach
Killarney man to lead women’s basketball team into Euro qualifiers Decorated basketball coach James Weldon has been reappointed as head coach of the Ireland women’s basketball team, Basketball Ireland have confirmed. The Killarney native took over the role in 2019 and helped bring Ireland to the final of the FIBA Women’s European Championship for Small Countries this past summer. After coming through an interview process with Basketball Ireland’s Elite Performance Committee (EPC), Weldon is now set to take charge of the team for the upcoming EuroBasket 2023 qualifiers, which begin in November. Speaking after his reappointment, the St Paul’s man said he was “absolutely thrilled” to be carrying on as Ireland’s head coach. “It’s a great honour to be appointed again by Basketball Ireland’s Elite Performance Committee as head coach of the Irish senior women,” Weldon said. “With EuroBasket qualifier games a few months away and the fact that our Irish senior teams will be playing at the highest level in Europe, our work begins immediately. It is an exciting time to be part of Irish basketball.” Ireland’s first qualifier is away to the Netherlands on November 11, with a home fixture against Czech Republic three days later at the National Basketball Arena. Ireland’s other games in the competition will take place in November 2022 and February 2023. The group winners along with the four best runners-up from 10 groups will advance to the tournament proper. For his part, Weldon is looking forward to the challenge. “It’s just about 12 weeks away now, but the big plus this time is that the National League will be back up and running, so players will have some good gametime under their belts and should be that little bit sharper than they were
coming into the summer (at the FIBA Women’s European Championship for Small Countries). “Over the coming week it will be a very busy time with phone calls and trying to establish an extended panel for these upcoming games in November. It’s looking for little windows and little opportunities where we can get together. Some players are abroad, so it is a case of communicating and getting the right mix in the squad and the right balance for these games.” Weldon is highly respected within basketball circles having previously worked as an assistant coach for the Irish senior women’s team between 2003 and 2006. He is also a former head coach of Ireland’s U18 women’s side. Domestically, the Killarney man is a three-time Super League Coach of the Year. He won nine national titles with the UL Huskies during a four-year spell at the club. He also worked with the Kerry senior footballers during the Eamonn Fitzmaurice era.
NATIONAL LEAGUE
Meanwhile, there was some positive news at last for Killarney’s basketball clubs as Basketball Ireland confirmed that full contact training for all levels and age groups is allowed from September 20, with leagues and competitions expected to resume in October. The news follows clarifications received from Sport Ireland. Killarney’s two National League teams, Scotts Lakers (St Paul’s) and the Killarney Cougars, will be eager to get back on the court after an extended period of inactivity due to COVID-19 restrictions.

ON THE CUSP OF GLORY It’s D-Day for Spa and Beaufort who are now just 60 minutes away from the top tier of Kerry football 2020 INTERMEDIATE CLUB FINAL
________________________________________________________________________________________
Spa v Beaufort Sunday at 2.30pm Fitzgerald Stadium
Just as Mayo will be hoping for a long-awaited reversal of fortunes this weekend, so too will Spa when they take on Beaufort in the final of the Kerry Intermediate Club Football Championship.
KEY PLAYER: Dynamic half forward Dara Moynihan will be hoping to lead Spa to the Promised Land on Sunday. Pic: Anne Holland/Spa GAA.
Mayo’s wait for their Holy Grail has been far longer, of course, but there have certainly been plenty of hard luck stories for the Tullig club since that memorable county and provincial glory back in 2009. After losing against Cookstown of Tyrone in the All-Ireland final in early 2010, they were relegated back to intermediate and were subsequently defeated in three county finals (2012 v Finuge, 2014 v Ardfert and 2015 v St Mary’s). Their goal has always been to return to senior but they have just fallen short, despite often seeming to have the quality to get over the line. Now, with county calibre players like Dara Moynihan and Liam Kearney leading the way alongside East Kerry stars Shane Cronin, Dan O’Donoghue, Mike Foley and Evan Cronin, they find themselves on the cusp once again. The absence of long-time talisman Mike Stam O’Donoghue is a major blow but they are, nevertheless, odds-on favourites to prevail on Sunday and graduate to the top table
of Kerry club football. The Killarney club’s confidence should be high following their dominant 1-14 to 2-6 victory over Castleisland Desmonds in last week’s semi-final.
BEAUFORT
Standing in their way are a Beaufort team who have made quick progress after moving up from junior level just two seasons ago. The Mid Kerry club famously went on to win the 2019 Junior All-Ireland after emerging victorious from Kerry and Munster in 2018, and they have wasted no time in making a mark at intermediate level. Just as Spa should be flying after their last outing, Beaufort will have a spring in their step following their last four performance. With impressive Kerry newcomer Mike Breen, Ronan Murphy and Liam Carey to the fore, they made surprisingly light work of a fancied Na Gaeil side. The final score of 1-13 to 0-10 did not flatter Lios an Phúca one bit. Whoever wins Sunday’s bout will have little time to dwell on their conquest. Due to the helter-skelter nature of the club schedule this year, the victors will have a baptism of fire the following weekend as their 2021 Senior Club Championship gets underway. Their opponents? Frequent champions and club kingpins, Dr Crokes. VERDICT: Spa by one

Mayo for Sam… But only if O’Shea is used correctly 10.09.2021
Eamonn Fitzgerald says the role of Aidan O’Shea will be vital if Mayo are to break their 70-year curse and win tomorrow’s All-Ireland final Kerry failed to deliver so it will be Mayo versus Tyrone tomorrow, and not Kerry-Dublin as so many predicted. Who will be crowned All-Ireland champions? I sought out the views of a number of interested parties and where better to start than with Mick O’Dwyer, Waterville’s most famous son? Visitors cause traffic jams on the main street as they stop to get their photographs taken beside his bronze, life-size statue. I spoke to the 85-year-old on Monday morning and asked him what he thought of Kerry’s defeat to Tyrone. “It was one of those days, Eamonn, when things didn’t just work out according the plan,” he said. “I can tell you, the two Davids were an awful loss in extra-time. You really needed them to help the others drive home. Sure, David Clifford was a match-winner on his own that day. He’s a marvellous player. You can talk all you want to about the league, but you know that the championship is a different kettle of fish altogether. It’s all on the day in the championship.” Were Tyrone tough opposition during Micko’s long career as manager of Kerry, Kildare, Laois and Wicklow? “Well, the championship game I remember most about Tyrone was when I was with Laois. There was a
back door that time. We beat Dublin and both Laois and Tyrone came through the backdoor. We met them in Portlaoise and a right bad day it was too. They were tough, very tough, but we got the better of them 12 points to 9, no goals.” At this point I put Dwyer (as he is better known to players and supporters in this part of the world) on the spot. Who will win tomorrow? “It will be very close. Mayo have got some very good new players who are very fast and speed is very important in today’s game. But, after a very closely contested game, I fancy Tyrone to win. They are tough boys.” One final point before we meet again. How important is the referee in a big game? “Very important, but I believe he has far too much to do in the modern fast game. There are so many rules he has to apply and they are constantly changing. Then he has three different colour cards to give out for a foul. Is it a black card, or a yellow, or red, and then he has to keep an account of the time from the moment a player is sinbinned. How can you expect him to
65
10.09.2021
judge 10 minutes accurately? The referee has a very tough job and some of those responsibilities should be taken from him and let him concentrate on the play.” It was great talking to the 85-year-old. Age hasn’t dimmed his enthusiasm for the game he has adorned for 70 years.
MAYO CAPABLE
Back to the semi-final which featured a splendid Mayo fight-back from a seven-point deficit. Few people gave Mayo any chance of beating the Dubs, but in our preview for that semi-final I found one man who did forecast an upset. John Gibbons, centre-forward for Mayo in the 60s and 70s argued that Mayo should not be written off and were well capable of winning. How right he was. John lives in beautiful Louisburg just 500 yards from the Atlantic Ocean, probably the nearest location to America, where so many of his native Mayo diaspora live in hope that this may be their year at last to lift the Sam Maguire. I spoke to John again earlier this week and first put it to him to pinpoint the significant factors that delivered that shock Mayo win. "The players I had hoped would perform – Pádraig O’Hora, Lee Keegan, Paddy Durcan, Mattie Ruane, and especially Tommy Conroy and Ryan O'Donoghue - all came up trumps in the second half particularly, as they needed to if we had any chance of beating the Dubs,” he said. “Our guys took the game to Dublin, took their scores when the chances arose - unlike the Kerry forwards against Tyrone, and pressed up on the Dubs and controlled the danger men up front: Kilkenny and O'Callaghan. That's the collective that needed to happen for Mayo and it also happened in the second half against Galway, in the Connacht final. This gave me hope that they could do it again against the Dubs, who were not anything like the teams of the previous winning years.” How are Mayo coping without Cillian 0’Connor, their talisman and most prolific scorer, not just this year, but also for several years? “I thought they would seriously miss Cillian against Dublin, and maybe they did miss him, but they got through without him. I said to you previously that free--takers win All-Irelands and certainly Mayo rode their luck with Robbie Hennelly scoring the 45s and Ryan O'Donoghue stepping into Cillian's role, successfully so far. You will always miss a prolific scorer but the younger players like Conroy and O'Donoghue have come of age, Diarmuid O'Connor has regained his
form, Kevin McLoughlin is a wily player with lots of experience and great work rate. James Carr is highly talented. Darren Coen, Jordan Flynn, Colm Moran, Enda Hession, and a string of younger subs ensure that Mayo are not lacking for pace and talent in reserve.”
AIDAN O’SHEA
And, of course, James Horan faces a dilemma with Aidan O’Shea his most experienced player by far over many years. Will he start him? “I did say to you that Aidan is a head scratcher because who knows where his best position is. In fairness to him, he had his foot in a medical boot and it's said he had to have an injection before the Dublin game, so his training had been curtailed. I believe Horan will play him at full forward again and all of Mayo hope that he will redeem himself with a great display in the final.” Tyrone depend on scoring goals to get them through. What are the significant match–ups to prevent these goals? “I expect O’Hora and Keegan to match up with McShane, who I expect will start on Saturday, and McKenna. Oisín Mullen or Paddy Durcan will try and nullify Peter Harte and McCurry. I believe that Tyrone have not met a half back line as good and as attacking as Mayo’s. I think it could depend on whether Mayo's half backs dominate. Will Meyler and Hampsey nullify Conroy and O’Donoghue? Not if Mayo half backs are on top and I expect a positive reaction from Aidan O'Shea. Intriguing!” Mayo have had many false dawns over that long barren period stretching back to 1951. Is John confident that this final will be different and that Mayo will shake off ‘The Curse’ for once and for all? “I am confident that Mayo will win. I have to say that I saw no evidence of COVID in that Tyrone display, but I am assured that some of their players did have COVID. I expect a really dogged, physical performance from Tyrone and I expect Mayo to match them for physicality, something Mayo would not be known for in the past. This young Mayo team have already played in an All-Ireland final last December and have definitely learned from that experience. “Eoghan McLoughlin was back in training with his teammates on the static bicycle the Wednesday after having his jaw broken in two places against Dublin. What odds he'll appear in the final with a Phantom of the Opera mask? Perhaps not, but that's the type of attitude that pervades this

group, an attitude that gives me confidence that they are the real deal. Sam to come west.”
SEÁN GRIFFIN
Copplecurragh is one of those delightful and meaningful small townlands that attracts us to rural Ireland. It is close to Charlestown and Knock shrine. Seán Griffin, domiciled in Malahide for many years, is a native of Copplecurragh. He is a sports aficionado, not just GAA, but all sports and has suffered so many Mayo defeats as a dedicated supporter. Monsignor Horan, with a significant cash injection help from Charlie H., delivered a very successful airport on the side of a Mayo mountain. I asked Seán if Mayo need a miracle from Knock to win, and if it is any different to previous disappointments? “It is a changed scenario for Mayo this weekend,” he said. “Tyrone are very like Mayo in terms of youth, movement, and a mixture of experience. I believe that Mayo can win for two rea-
sons. A better result in the semi-final against Dublin, and Tyrone were lucky against a Kerry team that should have beaten them. Mayo now know how to beat Tyrone and have the ability to go and do it. Up Mayo for Sam.”
MY VIEW
I go for Mayo, if manager James Horan bites the bullet in his second term and does not start Aidan O’Shea. Sentimentality and personal loyalty, no matter how well deserved, don’t win All-Irelands and the only thing he will be remembered for is bringing Sam back for the first time since 1951. Leave it to the flying young guns, who will not be lured into the Tyrone funnels we wrote about last week. O’Shea can be the super sub who can then help bring Sam to the West. Spare a thought for Paddy Prendergast, the former Mayo full back, who has resided in Tralee for the guts of 50 years. He is the only living member of the 1951 team. Hope you enjoy it, Paddy.

CLASSIC: Thomas Kelliher, Joe Scally, Paul Sherry, Mike Leahy and Jane O'Donoghue at the Killarney Celtic Golf Classic.
Late drama at exciting Celtic Golf Classic The last team out at the Killarney Celtic Golf Classic carded 106 points to overtake all who went before at an entertaining fundraiser staged over two days at the pristine Beaufort Golf Club. From Friday to late Saturday afternoon, the imposing tally of 101 points registered by the O’Donoghue Ring Hotel Group team of James McCarthy, Brian McCarthy, Cian Harte and Gavin Murray looked like being a winning one. The got a scare when the Spa GAA team almost caught them; Seánie Kelliher, Donal Cronin, John Cahill and Seán Devane ultimately carded a great score of 100 points to go second. With the O’Donoghue Ring Hotel Group quartet hanging on for victory, it was all down to Kissane Meats and Pat O’Neill, John England, Tony Sugrue and Donie Brosnan snatched first place by hitting a weekend high of 106 points. The Nearest to the Pin was won by Aar-
on Jones of the Dawn Meats team while the Longest Drive came from the club of Mark O’Shea who was representing Tom Meehan’s team. Speaking at the prizegiving, Killarney Celtic Vice Chairman Paul Sherry thanked all involved for contributing to another hugely successful fundraising day for the club. “Killarney Celtic is indebted to its members who volunteered over the two days,” he said, “to those who sponsored the prizes, entered teams, took signs, provided the fruit and chocolate and of course, most importantly, played on Friday and Saturday. “We also must thank the staff at Beaufort, both working on the course and those in the clubhouse. “A sign of a good golf classic is the number of returning teams and sponsors and already a number have committed to join us again in August/September 2022.”

The Kerry 14s made the difficult trip to Wexford for their opening game of the Shield Phase of the EA Sports League of Ireland. A delayed start while waiting for the referee didn’t help and it was the home side that went ahead in the 15th minute. Wexford scored again before the break with the Kerry defence calling for the ball to be flagged as having gone out of play. Kerry pushed hard to get back into the game but Wexford exploited this to score twice. Kerry play their first home game of this phase this Saturday when they welcome Waterford FC to Celtic Park at 2pm.
GEEHA BEAT DYNAMOS TO REACH U12 CUP FINAL
The 12s cup final, provisionally pencilled in for Monday, September 13, will be contested by St Brendan’s Park and Mastergeeha. Goals from Jonathan Casey, Jack Murphy and Roan Guerin saw Mastergeeha progress to the final thanks to a 3-1 win over Tralee Dynamos, whose goal came from Eoghan Daly. Mastergeeha had qualified for their semi-final with a 1-0 win over Camp Juniors with the goal coming from Guerin. Tralee Dynamos had beaten Killarney Celtic 2-1 to reach the last four thanks to goals from Danny Lane and Cody Sheehan with Jack Grady replying for Celtic. St Brendan’s Park were away to MEK Galaxy in their semi-final and went 1-0 up through Dean Courtney. The home side equalised just after half time but further goals from Danny Kingston, Johnny Neilings and Edison Jahiri ensured the Park’s progression.
PARK D VERSUS LISTOWEL CELTIC C IN U12 PLATE
Extra time was needed to separate Listowel Celtic C and Inter Kenmare B in the 12s plate semi-final. Ryan McDonell scored for Listowel Celtic C and Tony Desmond replied for Inter as the game was tied at 1-1 at end of normal time. Desmond got a second for Inter in extra time but it wasn’t enough as strikes from Shane Costello, Thomas Keane and Thomas Lynch saw the North Kerry side reach the final. They will meet St Brendan’s Park D in the final on Friday night. The Tralee side were 2-0 winners over Castleisland B with Patrick Leen and Odhran O’Connor finding the target on the day.
CLARE GIRLS MADE THE SHORT TRIP TO KERRY
The continuing development of the U12 Kerry girls squad and the build-up for the U13 and U15 Gaynor Cups continued when Clare SSL brought three squads to Kerry. The U12s played in Christy Leahy Park while the 13s and 15s were in action in Georgie Callaghan Park in Castleisland. It was a very productive days for the three Kerry girls sides. In the 12s it ended Kerry 2-2 Clare with Amy Brosnan getting both goals for Kerry. The 13s was also a draw, this time 1-1 with Laura Flavey on the mark for Kerry. The 15s game ended 4-0 but doesn’t really tell the story of the game as Kerry hit the crossbar and post twice with Katie Foster especially unlucky not to hit the net once if not twice. Returning Ronaldo top pick for Gameweek 4 It was the Premier League’s most spectacular transfer of the summer and now – unsurprisingly, it must be said - Cristiano Ronaldo is making waves in the world of fantasy football too. The incoming Manchester United star has been drafted in by over 1.2 million FPL players at the time of going to print, with legions of fantasy managers clearly unperturbed by his £12.5 million price tag. Ronaldo is expected to make his second debut for United in Saturday’s home game against Newcastle United. The Portuguese icon recently broke the record for most goals in men’s international football by scoring two late headers to break Irish hearts in Faro. The former Juventus striker will be hoping to continue that fine form in his second stint in the Premier League. Meanwhile, the FPL Scout has highlighted Tottenham Hotspurs forward Harry Kane (£12.3 million) as another potential transfer target for Week 4 of the 2021/22 season. “The Spurs striker enjoyed his best-ever season in Fantasy last term,” The Scout said. “Kane combined 23 goals with 14 assists to total 242 points, finishing two points behind Bruno Fernandes (£12.0m) at the top of the player standings.
NEW SIGNING: Cristiano Ronaldo is proving to be a popular FPL target after his unexpected return to the Premier League. “The England captain has blanked against Wolverhampton Wanderers and Watford in his two appearances so far in 2021/22, but a visit to Crystal Palace can help Kane re-establish himself as a key captaincy pick. He has a strong recent record against the Eagles, having been involved in each of Spurs’ six goals over their last three meetings. “Indeed, the forward produced the fourth-best haul of his Fantasy career in his previous outing against Palace, claiming 19 points in Gameweek 27 last
season thanks to two goals and two assists. “The underlying numbers show Kane was a huge threat away from home in 2020/21. On the road, his 72 shots was a league-leading total, while his 12 goals were bettered only by the 13 of Mohamed Salah (£12.5m). “Palace, meanwhile, have struggled in defence when playing teams who finished in the top half of the table last term. Patrick Vieira's men lost 3-0 against Chelsea in Gameweek 1 and drew 2-2 with West Ham United in Gameweek 3. “After stepping up his form and fitness over the international break with England, Kane is among the best options for the armband in Gameweek 4.”
STANDINGS
In the Killarney Advertiser League in association with Brian James, Kevin Keane now leads the way on 272 points. O’Connor got 90 points last time out thanks primarily to his captain, Michail Antonio, who bagged him 30 in total. Our league leader’s impressive overall tally means that he is currently ranked 194th in Ireland and number 6,086 in the worldwide rankings. Shane O’Connor is second in the Killarney Advertiser League on 270 with Kil-

Our U9 boys made the short trip to the track in Killorglin and a lovely Sunday morning was had by all. Our U9s were in fantastic form playing some of the best football they have played all summer long, well done to all the teams for their incredible team work, skill and effort. Thank you to hosts Laune Rangers whose U9 teams also played very well. SENIOR TEAM: Sponsored by Almas Takeaway & Bathrooms 4U. No senior games this week but preparations continue for this year's club championship which will begin next weekend. What did happen this weekend is the 4th team in our group was decided as Beaufort got the win over Na Gaeil in Fitzgerald Stadium to set up the first of our seniors group games at a neutral ground against Na Gaeil, further details to be confirmed during the week.
