Our Parking & Congestion Series Sparks Debate

Welcome To The Team

KILLARNEY ADVERTISER is delighted to welcome Aishling O’Hanlon to the team. Aishling, a mobile journalist/digital journalist, is newly qualified with a diploma in radio broadcasting and production. A native of Lixnaw, Aishling studied at Radio Kerry Training and Kerry Education and Training Board. She previously studied TV, Radio and New Media Broadcasting in IT Tralee.

Recorded Message To Tackle Littering? KILLARNEY ADVERTISER’S series on the problem of parking and traffic congestion over the past fortnight has sparked much debate as we highlighted how certain areas become no-go zones during the busy summer months. We sought an expert opinion from consulting engineer Adrian Sheehan of Reeks Consulting Engineers, Killarney. His suggestions included a strategically placed multi-storey car park and a phone app showing car users where parking facilities are available throughout the town. From a planning point of view, the aim is to try to remove as much traffic as possible from town centre, noted Mr Sheehan. “I would agree that a multi-storey car park would be ideal, but the cost of this

is questionable as it would only be fully occupied during the summer months,” Mr Sheehan told Killarney Advertiser. “There is certainly a question mark on whether we should be placing it centrally in, say, The Glebe car park. Ideally a multi-storey would be desirable in someplace like the Lewis Road car park.” A public-private partnership would be the correct way to proceed, added the consulting engineer. “Perhaps the lands could be provided by Kerry County Council, with a private operator building and operating the car park for a set number of years,” said Mr Sheehan. “We would also like to see Kerry County Council working in tandem with private operators to ensure all parking facilities

are fully utilised – with something like a phone app showing car users where there are parking facilities available, both private and public.” Mr Sheehan added: “We do believe it will take everyone working together, both public and private, to have any chance of solving the problem. Land in Killarney is very expensive and that can be difficult for Kerry County Council. An ideal location for parking would be the lands surrounding the old hospital next to Fitzgerald Stadium. We do believe this is an ideal location for parking.” • See page 39 for comments from readers and you can get in touch with your opinion by emailing newsdesk@killarneyadvertiser.ie

Crying Foul At ‘Mini Glastonbury’ WHY can’t people clean up after themselves? The hunt is on for a group of teenagers who held what’s being called a ‘mini Glastonbury’ on a protected Kerry beach. The disgusting detritus left at Derrynane National Park after the August bank holiday weekend by the thuggish revellers includes rubbish, human waste, condoms, smashed glass and broken tents. Credit card receipts and gym passes found in the debris have now been passed onto Gardai and they are liaising with the Office of Public Works. Naturally, residents are angry and a Facebook page has been set up to raise awareness about the fallout of the unofficial “rave”. No one has a problem with people enjoying themselves but this sort of behaviour beggars belief. Locals estimate that around 60 teenagers took part. Ross Duffy, who lives

near the park, said young people flock to the Derrynane dunes every August Bank Holiday weekend every year but this year things got out of hand. “This is becoming a bigger problem ever year but it is getting out of control now. This year it was off the charts. They took it to another level,” Mr Duffy told Independent.ie. Mr Duffy said he spent four hours “trawling through waste” with his wife in an effort to clean up after the teenagers on Sunday. “We saw a lot of garbage blowing across the dunes. We created a pile of it and there must’ve been 300kg of waste. The OPW came and removed the waste with a tractor,” he said. “The mind boggles over the mind-set it takes to come down to a place that is so incredibly beautiful and desecrate it like that. There’s no shame or humiliation. Pride is what we are seeing,” he added.

A NOVEL solution to the problem of littering at beauty spots was mooted this week. A recorded message relayed over a tannoy system could curb illegal dumping at Kerry beaches, according to a Kerry County Council member. Fianna Fáil Cllr Jimmy Moloney told the monthly meeting of Listowel Municipal District the message could be played from the lifeguard station welcoming people to the beach and asking them to take their litter home. Sinn Fein’s Robert Beasley supported the motion and it will be investigated by Kerry County Council’s Environment Department.

The Ross Shakes It Up With Mr Blue Sky

KILLARNEY’S homegrown video stars from The Ross Hotel have shaken their way into the spotlight yet again with another smash-hit video (https://youtu.be/hAv3kHevxJk) The previous films starring Team Ross have won the town-centre hotel a whole host of additional fans and this recording highlights the venue’s new cocktail, Mr Blue Sky. You can watch as the multi-talented staff members create the tipple, to the soundtrack of – you’ve guessed it – the Jeff Lynne and ELO classic Mr Blue Sky.

“This is our fourth and most fun video in our opinion!” said The Ross manager Pat McGrath, who stars in the film along with Cian Browne, Chloe O’Doherty, Hazel Murphy and Keith Hannon. The cocktail recipe features homemade blueberry-infused vodka, blueberry liqueur, fresh lemon, apple juice and a dash of agave syrup. The fabulously feelgood video was produced by Adrian McCarthy of Grand View Media with Pat and the team. You can see it here: https://youtu.be/ hAv3kHevxJk

Kerry Environmental Projects Net €27,597 A RAFT of new funding for Kerry environmental projects has been announced according to Minister of State at the Department of Tourism and Sport, Brendan Griffin. The Local Agenda 21 Environmental Partnership Fund supports local environmental initiatives by communities, individuals and not-for-profit groups. Minister Griffin said: “This year over €460,000 of funding is available, representing an increase of 15% from 2016. Local Authorities have now drawn down this allocation which

they will match, bringing the total LA21 project funding this year to €908,000. “Here in Kerry, funding of € 27,597 was announced for 46 projects across the county. “The main goal of these local projects is to improve the environment and make our communities more sustainable. “The fund shows how local initiatives can make a real difference in our communities, and showcases how small changes can make lasting improvements to our environment. “The Fund supports small scale

non-profit environmental projects such as allotments, community gardens, compost schemes, rainwater harvesting schemes, educational initiatives and environmental exhibitions. “Eligible projects are those that will support and complement, at a local level, national environmental policies such as those on Waste, Biodiversity, Climate Change, Air, Water and Sustainable Development. “Nationally, 834 projects are being funded under the 2017 scheme which is an increase of over 100 projects on 2016.”

Feet First On Plunkett Street PLUNKETT STREET was pedestrianised on August 1 and will remain closed to traffic every evening form 7pm until 7am for the month of August as works are carried out to install removable bollards. Kerry County Council has introduced the temporary measure to restrict vehicular access to Plunkett Street, Killarney from the Main Street Junction to Reen’s Pharmacy.

Burglaries GARDAÍ in Kerry are urging property owners to be vigilant after a number of burglaries in the county. Items were taken from a store in Ballyduff GAA Club, while two gold chains were taken from a private residence in Tralee on Saturday. A small sum of money was taken from Listowel Electrical Rewinds on Friday morning.

WELL done to the Killarney Legion under-14 boys who became the fourth Legion team in the last four years to win the highly competitive East Kerry Division 1 League. Having been successful in 2014, 2015 and 2016 this year’s team came out on top in a very difficult group stage where they advanced to beat Glenflesk in the final. “The collective effort by the players and management saw the team turn in a matchwinning performance against a very competitive and gallant Glenflesk,” said Killarney Legion chairman Enda Walshe. “The lads needed to be at their best to win that game and the win was due reward for the hard work done by both team and management. As a club we are very proud of our four-in-a-row in what is in our opinion the best district competition in the county. “The lads enjoyed a celebration at our generous team sponsors Four Star Pizza and no doubt attention will now turn to keeping this panel together and continue to improve and progress as they climb up the juvenile ranks.”

Are We Away With The Fairies? Words: Eve Kelliher Pics: Don MacMonagle

ed: “I have a machine standing in the yard right now. And if someone told me to go out and knock a fairy fort or touch it, I would starve first.” Deputy Healy-Rae’s daughter Kerry County Council member Maura Healy-Rae had raised the issue at a recent council meeting, saying her father was convinced fairies were in the area. Deputy Healy-Rae estimated €40,000 had been spent on the route recently but now that the dip had reappeared signage would have to be erected to alert drivers to the lag until the road was repaired. While comments, both playful and serious, were bandied about on the issue in recent days, what I’ve noticed is the belief that we never block or obstruct a fairy path or interfere with a lios or fort runs deep in the Irish psyche – and it all comes down to respecting our heritage. • See our columnist Anne Lucey’s opinion on page 14

REPORTS that Independent Kerry TD Danny Healy-Rae blames the condition in the Cork-Kerry road on the presence of fairies hit the headlines in Ireland and beyond this week. Even the BBC sat up and took notice after journalist and Killarney Advertiser columnist Anne Lucey’s report in the Irish Times outlined how Deputy HealyRae insists a dip in a Kerry road which had been repaired before mysteriously reappearing is due to the presence of fairy forts. “There are numerous fairy forts in that area,” said the Kilgarvan TD. “I know that they are linked. Anyone that tampered with them back over the years paid a high price and had bad luck.” Deputy Healy-Rae pointed to the local belief that “there was something in these places you shouldn’t touch”. Comment

‘I Wouldn’t Interfere With A Fairy Fort Because It’s Part Of My Heritage’ Aishling O’Hanlon believes we should be proud of our Irish folklore DANNY HEALY-RAE’S comment regarding fairies and the road at Glenflesk earlier this week brought my childhood memories back. Growing up in the country, my house was located close to a fairy fort and I was always told both in school and at home that a person should never tamper with or destroy a fairy fort, or the fairies would make bad things happen to you.

I’m not a superstitious person, I don’t believe in Irish myths like walking under a ladder or breaking a mirror will bring you seven years of bad luck, I don’t believe in fairies, ghosts or any of that stuff, but I wouldn’t interfere with a fairy fort because it’s part of my heritage. We live in a beautiful country, known worldwide for our scenery and Irish folklore. I’m proud to be Irish and I’m proud of my Irish heritage!

Aishling O’Hanlon takes to the streets of Killarney to get opinions from Kerry people and visitors on Danny Healy-Rae’s comments

“I agree with Danny Healy-Rae. I grew up and was told to never interfere with fairy forts.” Pete, Killarney “It’s a creative way of getting attention. Danny Healy-Rae is cute, but not stupid.” James, Tralee “Possibly away with the fairies. Kerry people are not more superstitious than other counties in Ireland.” Jack, Waterville “Silly but a clever way of getting attention on the issue. Correct to be protecting heritage. Gets the work done in his county; we should have more politicians like him.” Alice, Kilkenny “Ireland is beautiful. Heritage is important and should be kept.” Angela and Christof, Germany • What do you think? Let us know at newsdesk@killarneyadvertiser.ie or message us on Facebook

Views On The News Anne Lucey gives her take on happenings in Killarney, Kerry and beyond in her monthly column

Speaking Of Sophistication

Raising Of The

Fairies THE first book I ever read was called “Miss Pennyfeather and the Pooka”. It was written by Eileen O Faolain and published around 1944. I was very sick and very young and my great-aunt Frances – from The Concrete as it used be known – a very correctly-spoken, very straight-backed and very English lady cycled back to Fossa with the red clothbound book for me. I still have it. I still read it. My first attempts to write my address – a lios in Fossa-are on its pages. It is a story about a fairy horse called Mikey Joe set in Blarney. And it is wonderful. The point about all this? The raising of the fairies by Danny Healy-Rae has got the nation talking about fairies. In 2007 I covered the meeting when he first hinted that what was happening on that section of the N22 then a new road might not be all it seemed. His further comments this week that he would “starve” rather than interfere with a fairy fort or a lios excited much reaction – a lot of it a grudging understanding from people who would prefer to forget their rural origins. Does the TD “believe” in fairies, the news editor in The Irish Times asked me? Fairy lore is no theology, I thought to myself, and Danny is no theologian. But when I asked him he hit the nail on the head without ever having to con-

sult Thomas Aquinas: it is what the people think and it is a shared view and he shares the view. These are sacred places. There is much that we don’t know and they were linked to the people

If you disturb them, they’ll be turning butter and changing children and maybe even the steering wheel

who were there before us. This is an ancient land. It has been Christianised and an additional sacral landscape created that until very recently co-existed quite happily with the older one – churchyards and graveyards, and places called seantóirs lived alongside lioses. Ground that shouldn’t be disturbed and until recently was not. Trees that should not be cut. The shared view of the sacred has helped preserve the country’s archaeology and has helped define us as a people, until recently at least when Mammon has flattened all before it, building walls in our minds.

Ultimately, Danny is right about the luck thing – whether it is the fairies coming after you or if it is a sign of arrogance – but disturbing the old places brings nothing good. The Irish fairy is a peculiar creature. The “good people” is only to plamás them, I suspect, and being little makes them no less powerful. In fact, they seem more malevolent for being small. If you disturb them, they’ll be turning butter and changing children and maybe even the steering wheel on certain places on the N22. Let them be and they are fine, but rattle them and you will never hear the end of it! Every nation has its ideas about sprites and fairies, from the ancient Greeks to the Vikings. Shakespeare not only delighted in them in Midsummer Night’s Dream, but retained the idea in his more serious work. “There are more things in Heaven and on Earth, Horatio, than are dreamt of in your philosophy,” as Hamlet puts it. What else is Star Wars only a fairy story with machines? It is not a lack of sophistication or backwardness, or lack of education that we retain a notion about our fairies – only that we have preserved it longer. It should be a mark of pride in this age that believes in colour therapy, touching healing stones, remedies in sniffing and in chanting eastern mantras!

I AM writing much of this from France from a small town I am long acquainted with. And I am struck with the correspondences with Killarney. There is a class abroad, probably the same people who cry humbug at the fairies – who think it very sophisticated to give out about rural TDs and ministers bringing home the bacon. Pork barrel politics, I think is what they call it. As if the idea stemmed from America! Except it is not American at all. In France, an older democracy and the one that inspired American independence, a representative is supposed to bring things back to his constituency. In this town on the Indre et Loire for instance, the “ancien minister” for tourism and small businesses, Herve Novelli, mayor of the town, and until the last election a deputy in the Assemble Nationale in Paris has brought millions of funding to do up old market halls, buy a new tourist office, help secure a park from the Sorbonne – and a greenway. This is only to be expected. I sometimes wince at the naivety of these Dublin-based commentators, and their followers among younger journalists and TDs in the south – they must know nothing of Europe, I feel. But there are two reasons they are so naïve. One has to do with our immersion in the English-speaking world which has us literally blindsided. On the one hand we think that we should all be very correct English people – and on the other that we should also be looking west to the next parish in America. The second has to do with the Europe and particularly the failure of our MEPs over the years to create real links with Europe, other than with Brussels and capitals. They come back talking in abstraction and failing to rid us of stereotypical notions. Local councils like Killarney Town Council and its twinnings do far more meaningful work in creating links and learning situations. It has to tell us something that two prominent MEPS, our own hard-working Sean Kelly and the Dublin MEP Lynn Boylan, both failed spectacularly to get elected to the local authority structure in Kerry, where the nitty gritty matters most, while they glided into Europe. If we are to move forward with Brexit, we will have to stop looking right and left and learn to look in a different direction. We will anyway be helped in this because from 2019 English will no longer be an official language, and French will be the language of Europe. We have chosen as Irish our official language, not English, remember! And no other nation, not even Malta, has English as an official language.

Greenway GETTING things done and can do is not exclusively American either: a new greenway has opened here, just two years after the idea was put forward. It stretches all the way to Chinon, over 20kms away, by the banks of the Veude. Last year the railway tracks, idle with around 15 years were taken upon. In May the thing seemed to have stalled. There was no money, the hairdresser told me. Lo and behold there have been elections since. And in about a week, surface has been laid and tarred and the track not only usable it is a delight. There are differences with south Kerry of course – the line there has been idle much longer. But even so, getting things done the French way is bringing great pleasure and new business like bike shops and cafes. By the way, the track is just yards from the back yards and gardens of dozens of people who don’t seem to mind the new traffic. A bientot!

Chance To Catch A Shooting Star

Basketball Season Ticket National League

Now is the perfect time to check out the night skies, says Trevor O’Donoghue EVERY day the earth is bombarded from space with millions of pieces of sand, dust and specks of rocks. When these pieces of debris hit our atmosphere at speeds in excess of 50 km/second they burn up and can be seen as spectacular streaks across the night sky. These are shooting stars and are visible every night if the sky is clear. However, there are certain times of the year when the Earth passes through a cloud of dust and debris and creates many more shooting stars. This time of year, and for a couple of days either side of August 12, the Earth passes through a cloud of debris left behind by the comet Swift-Tuttle and we are treated to celestial fireworks in the form of the Perseid meteor shower. The shower peaks on August 12 with

up to 80 shooting stars visible every hour. In reality, this means after midnight on Friday is the best opportunity to see them. Unfortunately this year, a bright moon that rises just before eleven pm interferes with the sight and will wash out some of the fainter meteors. That doesn’t mean you won’t see any. It’s still worthwhile getting out and looking up provided we have clear skies. The meteors can appear anywhere in the sky, but all appear to radiate from a point in the sky in the constellation Perseus and so they are known as the Perseids. IT’S rare that politicians get the chance to do battle in the great outdoors but that’s just what’s about to happen in Glenflesk this weekend. See which public representative has what it takes when it comes to showing their sporting prowess in a three-legged race and a wheelbarrow challenge as MEP Sean Kelly along with TDs and senators go head-to-head this Sunday, August 13. The fun is all part of GlenFest – a daylong celebration to mark 40 years of Glenflesk GAA Club’s pitch. This will be the last great sport-

ing event to be held on Glenflesk’s 40-year-old GAA pitch, said Derry Healy, club chairman. GlenFest is being organised to mark the end of the current pitch in Glenflesk which his about to be dug up and redeveloped for future generations. “The pitch represents much more than the GAA club’s focal point – it also stores a wealth of treasured memories and local history,” said Derry. Throw-in for the free day of entertainment is at 2pm when open-air Mass will be celebrated on the field with many former priests of the parish and former

Charity

Killarney Musical Society To Stage Sweet Charity THE talented Killarney Musical Society has announced its show for 2018 will be the musical Sweet Charity. The show takes a poignant and consistently funny look at the adventures, or rather the misadventures, of Charity Hope Valentine, a hopelessly romantic but comically unfortunate dance hall hostess in New York City. With a tuneful, groovy, mid1960s score by Cy Coleman, sparkling lyrics by Dorothy Fields, Sweet Charity captures the all the energy, humour, and heart-

break of Life in the Big City for an unfortunate but irrepressible optimist. Sweet Charity is a popular musical that has enjoyed successes in both London and New York, as well as the big screen. Its many big musical numbers promise to delighted all audiences and include “Big Spender,” “If My Friends Could See Me Now,” “There’s Gotta Be Something Better Than This,” “I’m a Brass Band” and “Baby, Dream Your Dream.” Watch this space for further details throughout the autumn.

SydneyRoseIsEarlyFavourite THE Sydney Rose Aisling Walsh is an early favourite to be crowned Rose of Tralee on August 22. Aisling, who is an oncology nurse, is rated at 3/1 by bookmakers to take the title. Dublin Rose Maria Coughlan is joint-second favourite at 15/2, along with San Francisco Rose Amanda Donohue – who at 20 is one of the youngest contestants this year.

club chairpersons in attendance. “It’s a way of saying ‘thank you’ to so many people who have got us to where we are today. I’m sure there will be mixed feelings as we say goodbye to one chapter and look forward to the next with great enthusiasm,” Derry added. Entertainment will include movies in the local hall, with a movie for teenagers being chosen by an online vote. The premiere of the official DVD of the hit drama ‘Patrick’ – filmed live at the INEC and featuring numerous local performers – will be at 8pm.

Record Turnout For Tidy Towns Meitheal

MANY hands make light work – and the Killarney Tidy Towns Meitheal organisers were faced with the pleasantly unusual situation of having the number of volunteers exceeding the amount of gloves and brushes available for last Monday’s clean-up. But the problem was swiftly solved, with upwards of 35 men and women stepping up to the mark and making a clean sweep on the Muckross Road. “It’s unusual that we have more people than equipment but it was great to see the enthusiasm, and some tremendous work was done,” said spokesman Johnny McGuire. Cahernane House Hotel general manager

Emer Corridan, herself one of the volunteers, together with her staff treated, all present to refreshments in the salubrious drawing room of the hotel after the cleanup. “It was a great outing that saw us put the edge on the Muckross Road approach to Killarney,” added Johnny. The next outing, a clean-up on the Cork Road, takes place this Monday evening, August 14, meeting at the junction of Woodlawn and the Cork Road at 6.30pm. “We re calling on residents and businesspeople in the area to come out and help with the work of the Tidy Towns volunteers on Monday evening,” said Johnny.

Kerry’s On The Crest Of A Wave

INCH was the place to be this week for anyone with even a passing interest in rowing as the All Ireland Coastal Rowing Championships were launched by the Minister of State at the Department of Transport, Tourism and Sport, Brendan Griffin. Crews from Kerry are already all set to dip an oar into the championships, which will take place at The Lakeside Centre, Ballyshannon, Co Donegal, next weekend, Friday, August 18-Sunday, August 20. Donegal Bay Rowing Club in conjunction with the Irish Coastal Rowing Federation are hosting this event. Some 2780 rowers will descent on the magnificent Wild Atlantic Way’s oldest town in Ireland. More than 500 rowing crews from Cork, Kerry, Wexford, Wicklow, Dublin, Antrim, Belfast, Donegal, will each be competing for medals and a trophies, in the most coveted of Rowing Championships. The latter joined The Gleneagle Concert Band as it undertook a joint concert tour in the South of France, performing in Monaco, Cannes and Antibes under the baton of band conductor Vincent Condon. This is the band’s sixth foreign tour following on from visits to Holland in 1985, Germany in 1989, Austria in 2002, Paris in 2007 and Lisbon in 2013. More information is also available on the band website wwww.gleneagleconcertband.ie

Rowing has gained such momentum in Ireland, particularly in rural clubs and villages along the Wild Atlantic Way and East Coast of Ireland. “The growing trend of this sport has touched the hearts and minds of every-

one. It tends to be more family and fun orientated and very seasonal. That doesn’t take from the rivalry and passion between the clubs and Counties competing. The Finals are Sunday are intense, the battles take place on the water, giving way to plenty of banter and celebrations on dry land.” A live stream link for the finals on the Sunday is www.crvlive.com

Deputy Brendan Griffin, TD, Minister of State at the Department of Transport, Tourism and Sport, launched the All Ireland Coastal Rowing Championships at Inch Strand, Co Kerry, with Johanna King, Treasurer, and Mary B Teahan, PRO, Irish Coastal Rowing Federation.

Entertainment Disney To Start New Streaming Service, Netflix To Lose Content

Disney has some cool news, which will also be a bummer to Netflix subscribers. The company will be launching its own Disney-branded streaming service in 2019, but all of the company’s content will eventually be pulled from Netflix. The new platform will be the exclusive subscription-on-demand home for Disney’s theatrical slate starting with movies released in 2019, including Toy Story 4, Frozen 2, and the live-action The Lion King. Disney-produced shows on Netflix like the Marvel franchises will continue to live on Netflix in the future. The company will be spending a “significant” amount to invest in exclusive content for the new streaming service. Stock in Netflix dropped more than five percent after Disney announced the news.

Taylor Swift Pictured in Courtroom Sketches from Trial in Denver

Taylor Swift is currently in court for her trial against radio host David Mueller. The DJ sued Taylor after he was fired for allegedly groping the singer at a concert meet-and-greet. She filed a countersuit, alleging that she was sexual assaulted by Mueller. Taylor is reportedly only seeking $1 in damages and is fighting in court out to take “a stand for all women.” Her attorney said in his opening statements on Tuesday morning that “this is a case of sexual assault in the workplace.” “A woman is assaulted. She reports it and she gets sued … it doesn’t make sense,” the lawyer said. “She’s trying to tell people out there that you can say no when someone grabs you no matter who they are.”

In The Saddle For Puck Fair HORSE traders were out in force from early yesterday to take part in Ireland’s longest-running horse fair in Evan’s Field in Killorglin. Puck Fair’s Gathering Day saw crowds surge across the streets of Killorglin as visitors converged on mid Kerry from across the globe to celebrate the crowning of King Puck. This year’s festival is especially meaningful for Irish emigrants using the threeday extravaganza as an opportunity to return to the green grass of home. Street entertainers and musicians are roaming the streets for the three days of the festival, which concludes tomorrow. A brand-new addition to this year’s Puck Fair is the installation of a pop-up archives office in the town square, which contains hundreds of photos taken over the years at the many festival celebrations. This office will be open from 12pm each day and will provide a wonderful source of information for tourists and lo-

cal history buffs. Throughout the day, entertainment will be provided by acts such as Wobbly Circus, Sproai Chiarrai and Squawkabout, while the Kingdom Party Pals will provide a fabulous surprise for the excited children in attendance, who will be invited to pose for snaps with their favourite Disney characters. The coronation parade and ceremony saw a wild mountain goat crowned as monarch of the revelry yesterday evening. This year’s Queen of Puck, Caitlin Horgan, is a pupil of Scoil Mhuire in Killorglin, while her lady-in-waiting is Lily-Sue Eyers of Douglas National School on the outskirts of the town. A Weekly Round-Up Of News + Views From Kerry And Around

‘Stop Or We Will Destroy You’ Comment

Words: Eve Kelliher

CHEST-BEATING and spiralling rhetoric are all well and good – until nuclear war breaks out. It really has gone beyond a joke this time as two ego-driven personalities wrestle for control of the fabled “big red button”, Bond movie-style. The prospect of war between North Korea and the United States moved a notch closer after Pyongyang spelled out its plan to launch a volley of ballistic missiles towards Guam. So our fate is in the hands of two world leaders whose antics to date have pretty much been considered madcap, hilarious and fodder for comedians and writers. But who’s laughing now? You see, loose cannons tend to leave a trail of destruction in their wake. North Korea has defied threats of “fire and fury” from Donald Trump, deriding his warning as a “load of nonsense” and announcing a detailed plan to launch missiles aimed at the

waters off the coast of the US Pacific territory of Guam. The announcement, made in the name of a general who heads North Korea‘s rocket command, warned Pyongyang was preparing a plan to fire four of its Hwasong-12 missiles over Japan and into waters around Guam, which hosts 7,000 military per-

sonnel on two main bases and has a population of 160,000. It added the plan could be finalised within a week or so and would then go to leader Kim Jong Un for approval. The North Korean report added: ”We keep closely watching the speech and behaviour of the US.” Washington, meanwhile, has been

giving out mixed signals. While Mr Trump was threatening annihilation and boasting from the New Jersey golf resort where he is on holiday that he has made the US nuclear arsenal “far stronger and more powerful than ever before”, secretary of state Rex Tillerson sought to calm the waters. He insisted the US was not signalling a move towards military action, telling reporters: ”Americans should sleep well at night.” But defence Secretary Jim Mattis ratcheted the tension back up, calling on Pyongyang to “cease any consideration of actions that would lead to the end of its regime and the destruction of its people”. Meanwhile General Kim Rak Gyom, commander of the North Korea’s strategic rocket forces, said Mr Trump was “extremely getting on the nerves” of his soldiers by making comments that showed his “senility” again.

Found Guilty Of Second-Degree Murder MOLLY MARTENS and Thomas Martens have both been found guilty of the second-degree murder of Jason Corbett. The father and daughter were convicted of the murder of the Limerick businessman, who was brutally bludgeoned to death with a baseball bat and a brick in the bedroom of his US home. Retired FBI agent Thomas (67) and his daughter, Molly Martens Corbett (33), were convicted of the second-degree murder of Mr Corbett (39) in North Carolina two years ago. Ms Martens Corbett, sobbing, turned to her family in the public gallery and said: “I’m really sorry Mom – I wish they’d just kill me.” A conviction of second-degree murder means

the jury unanimously believed the killing of Mr Corbett was done in malice. The verdict followed a dramatic four-week trial in Davidson County before Judge David Lee and a Superior Court jury of nine women and three men. Ms Martens Corbett wept and cried aloud when the unanimous guilty verdicts were returned by the jury. Her father remained impassive as the unanimous guilty verdicts were returned. Davidson County prosecutors had claimed Mr Corbett was fatally attacked because he planned to move back to Ireland with his children, Jack (10) and Sarah (8), but without his

second wife. He had refused to sign adoption papers giving his US wife equal rights to the children. His first wife, Margaret ‘Mags’ Fitzpatrick, had died of an asthma attack in 2006 when the children were both aged under two years. Ms Martens Corbett was also the main beneficiary of a $600,000 life insurance policy on her husband.

Met Police Chasing ‘Viable Leads’ After Man Knocks Woman In Front Of London Bus POLICE trying to track down the Putney Bridge jogger who appeared to push a woman into the path of an oncoming bus say they are following a number of “viable leads”. The Metropolitan Police said it had had a huge response to its appeal after it released shocking video of the man knocking into a 33-year-old woman. The update came as it was re-

vealed the man jogged back across the bridge some 15 minutes after the incident, where the woman confronted him — but he ignored her. No arrests have yet been made, the Met said on Thursday, and officers asked anyone with information to call Putney safer neighbourhood team on 020 8785 8874, or Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111.

CCTV footage from another bus shows the man, wearing navy shorts and a grey T-shirt, barging into the woman as she walked to Putney Bridge tube station on 5 May, at about 7.40am, knocking her down. The bus driver’s quick reactions have been credited with saving the woman’s life. The video shows the double-decker swerving around her.

War With North Korea Would Be ‘Catastrophic’ - Mattis

Sneem In Search Of A GP Pic: Valerie O’Sullivan

THE Health Service Executive has twice advertised upcoming vacancy for a general practitioner in Sneem but has failed to attract an interested medic. A petition that aims to attract a doctor to the village has so far been supported by about 1,000 people, reports Anne Lucey in the Irish Times. Sneem, which has a population of 237, will soon lose its long-serving GP Dr Patrick Malone pictured, who is preparing to retire. The deadline for applications to the HSE’s third attempt to

fill the post is today, Friday, August 11. German-French couple Jochen Gerz and Laurence Vanpoulle started the “Sneem Needs a Doctor” campaign, initially in the village before moving it online. Mr Gerz, a Berliner who has lived in Sneem for a decade, said that without a doctor, there will be no village, writes Anne Lucey. Locals say the vacancy would leave Sneem relying on medical cover by day from Kenmare, which is more than 30 minutes away, and from Killarney, over an hour away, at night.

Man Arrested After French Soldiers Ambushed In Car Attack A MAN was arrested after a car was rammed into a group of soldiers near Paris, injuring six of them. It is unclear what motivated the driver, who was taken to hospital with bullet wounds after a calculated morning ambush and hourslong police chase on Wednesday. Authorities said he deliberately accelerated his BMW into a cluster of soldiers in what prosecutors are investigating as a potential terrorist attack.

President Emmanuel Macron’s government painted the incident in the suburb of Levallois-Perret as proof of the need to approve a new security law that critics fear infringes on liberties and puts the country in a permanent state of emergency. Wednesday’s attack caused no deaths and hurt no civilians, but still set nerves on edge - the seventh attempted attack on security forces guarding France this year alone.

US DEFENCE secretary Jim Mattis has warned that war with North Korea would be “catastrophic” but said diplomatic efforts were yielding results. Speaking at an event in California, Mr Mattis said his mission and responsibility was to have military options ready “should they be

needed” but stressed the US effort is currently focused on diplomacy. His comments came shortly after President Donald Trump warned North Korea it should be “very, very nervous” if it thinks of attacking the United States.

Smugglers Throw 280 Migrants Into Sea, UN Says SMUGGLERS have thrown some 280 migrants into the sea off the coast of Yemen in the last two days, causing more than 50 to drown and leaving over 30 missing, the UN migration agency has said. UN spokesman Stephane Dujarric said the migrants who were forced from boats in two separate “deeply troubling” incidents were hoping to reach countries in the Gulf via wartorn Yemen.

The International Organisation for Migration (IOM) said on Wednesday that up to 50 migrants from Ethiopia and Somalia were “deliberately drowned” by a smuggler off Yemen. The UN agency said 160 Ethiopian migrants were violently forced into the Arabian Sea yesterday (Thursday). The IOM said in a statement that its staff found six bodies on the beach – two male and four female – and 13 people are still missing.

Trump-like Chicken At White House Ruffles Feathers On Twitter AN INFLATABLE chicken mimicking US President Donald Trump has appeared near the White House in Washington DC. The chicken, sporting a golden coiffure, is a protest at Donald Trump’s “weak” and “ineffective” leadership. The 30 ft (9m) tall bird, referred to as “Chicken Don”, stands between the official residence of the US president and the fa-

mous Washington Monument. Owner Taran Singh Brar said the prop portrays a president who is “afraid”. But some Twitter users were not impressed, with one dubbing the stunt “pathetic”. In a video posted on social media on Wednesday, activist and documentary maker Mr Brar said he hoped to “bring awareness” to what he said

was a “bad and destabilising” US president. “We are out here to criticise our president for being weak and ineffective as a leader,” he said in the footage posted on Twitter, adding that Mr Trump also “seems afraid” to release his tax returns. “He seems afraid to stand up to Putin and now he’s playing a game of chicken with North Korea,” Mr Brar said.

Double-Decker Bus Smashes Into Shop In London A DOUBLE-DECKER bus crashed into a shop on a busy London high street on Thursday morning. Police were called just before 7am to reports of a bus hitting a building in Lavender Hill, near Clapham Junction train station in southwest London. A Transport for London spokeswoman said a route 77 double-decker bus was involved in the incident. Photos on social media show the vehicle on the pavement and smashed into the front of the Poggen Pohl Kitchen Design Centre.

Wedding of the Week

Cupid’s Arrow Strikes Surfers HER colleagues at the Aghadoe Heights Hotel & Spa welcomed newlywed Patrice Hayes back to work this week after the assistant sales and marketing manager returned from her honeymoon. Patrice, from Beale, wed Ballybunion native Declan O’Mahony in St John’s Church, Ballybunion, in a Mass led by local parish priest Father Noel Spring. After posing for the cameras of Killarney wedding photographers Evelyn and Keith Woodard on Ballybunion beach and cliffs, they re-joined their guests at the reception in the Listowel Arms Hotel. Patrice and Declan, a civil engineer with Kerry County Council, first met one sunny summer’s evening in August 2010 whilst surfing off Ballybunion beach. “Declan had just moved home after a six-month trip to Australia and we smiled and said hello out in the surf. We met a couple of more times surfing before having our first date,” said Patrice. “Just before Christmas 2015, we went for a walk on Ballybunion beach when Declan went down on one knee and popped the question! It was a complete surprise and made even more special by the fact that it happened at the place where it all began and where we also had our first kiss!” On their wedding day, the bride wore an ivory Pronovias Olivana gown purchased at Áibhéal of Adare in Limerick and the groom sported a navy Louis Copeland suit. Both sets of parents, Catherine and Thomas Hayes and Mary and Denis O’Mahony, helped the newlyweds celebrate. Also lending their support were Patrice’s sister and maid of honour Catríona Farac and her sisters Áine and Breda Hayes and cousin Dee Keating (bridesmaids), as well as Declan’s friend and best man John Fitzgerald, friends PJ Breen and Brendan O’Connell and brother-in-law Michael Farac (groomsmen). The bride’s goddaughter Kathryn Farac joined forces with her niece Emer O’Connor in the role of flowergirls. For their honeymoon, the newlyweds enjoyed a surfing trip in Bali and Lombok in Indonesia for two weeks in July, followed by a few nights in Dubai on the way home. The newlyweds are currently residing in Beale.

Carpool Karaoke: The Series EYEBROWS were raised when it was announced a few months ago that Apple had bought the rights to turn James Cordon’s Carpool Karaoke segment of his TV Show into a full series which would air on their (at the time) music only streaming service Apple Music. Since its debut on Cordon’s The Late Late Show, Carpool Karaoke has been a massive success with each segment racking upwards of 30 million views on You Tube, but does it work as a standalone programme?

Episode one, which is available to steam now, see’s the familiar format of Cordon driving an A-lister celebrity around LA, this time the cooler than cool Will Smith, belting out some of Smith’s biggest hits (Fresh Prince of Bel Air, Summertime, Getting Jiggy With It) while gatecrashing a wedding, singing with a marching band and taking a helicopter ride around Los Angles. It’s the Carpool Karaoke we all know and love but it’s bigger and quite possibly better!

Legion, Beaufort And Spa On Cusp Of Promotion There are three spots at Kerry’s top table up for grabs and a lot could be decided this weekend, writes Adam Moynihan WITH just two games to go in this year’s County League, Killarney Legion, Beaufort and Spa are each on the brink of securing their passage back into the top tier of Kerry football. Three sides will go up and Legion are in pole position to regain their Division 1 status on the back of an excellent league campaign in which they have yet to suffer a single defeat. Alan O’Neill has led his side to six wins and three draws in his first season at the helm and they now require just a single point from their remaining two games to guarantee promotion. If Legion can continue their fine league form at home to Waterville in Round 11 they could well be celebrating come Sunday evening. Waterville currently find themselves in a relegation battle and

Division 2: This Weekend’s Key Fixtures Kenmare v Spa Saturday, August 12, at 6pm (Kenmare)

will be scrapping for points but Legion will certainly be favourites to prevail. Although they must be disappointed to have exited the Championship at such an early stage, an immediate return to Division 1 would have been high on their list of priorities at the start of the season so they will be determined to get the job done this weekend. Elsewhere, Beaufort and Spa are joint second on 13 going into the penultimate round of fixtures and each have their fate very much in their own hands. The biggest game of the weekend is undoubtedly Kenmare v Spa on Saturday evening. Kenmare are three points behind Spa with a game in hand so a win would put them right back into contention. Victory for Spa, meanwhile, would all but confirm their promotion to Division 1. Depending on how results go elsewhere, they might mathematically need another point against Kilcummin on the last day but they’ll need to wait and see how things pan out. For now, all eyes will be on the trip to Kenmare. The Shamrocks have a County Championship quarter final to prepare for so they should be in good shape,

but Spa have good young team who will be eager to test themselves in Division 1. Beaufort’s remaining fixtures look relatively favourable and you would fancy them to pick up at least two points from their games against St Pat’s, who have the worst defensive record in the league, and Currow. That should be enough to earn them a top three finish and send them back to Division 1 for the first time since 1997. Glenflesk are well-placed to mount a late surge should anyone slip up but for them promotion might be a more realistic target in 2018. At the other end, things are getting desperate for Kilcummin who will probably need to beat both Glenflesk and Legion to avoid relegation to Division 3.

Current League Table P Pts 1. Legion 9 15 2. Beaufort 9 13 3. Spa 9 13 4. Glenflesk 9 11 5. Kenmare 8 10 6. Currow 9 10 7. Ardfert 8 7 8. Listowel 9 7 9. Waterville 9 6 10. Kilcummin 9 5 11. St Pat’s 9 5 12. Listry 9 4

Killarney’s Worsening Traffic Situation I WAS very interested to read the views of some of our councillors regarding Killarney’s worsening traffic situation. Some of these councillors were present when Killarney planning decisions were made which greatly affected traffic flow, or lack of it! For example, it was a mistake from day one not to build a jarvey lane along the Mission Road similar to the lane from the Flesk Bridge to Muckross; also, to build a public toilet on top of what is basically a roundabout at the Mission Road/East Avenue road junction, and add in a number of pedestrian crossing to stem flow further, more pedestrian crossings at either end of the bypass, which when used traffic has to stop on the roundabout, hardly ideal, could they not have been set further back from the junctions with safety railings?

Also, building a playground down the Demesne and the only place for parents and their children to exit their cars is onto the busy Port Road, the traffic chaos at Cathedral Place at school dropoff and funeral removal times, the High street junction mess, the narrowing of the Muckross Road, I could go on! Until we learn from past mistakes we have no hope of solving this problem and instead of hiring ‘expert’ consultants at huge cost, how about getting ideas from those affected, emergency services, taxi drivers, coach drivers, shopkeepers and school principals? A small bit of cop on and consultation with those affected will go a long way to solving this problem. Brendan O’Shea, Listry, Faha, Killarney

Why Is Nothing Being Done About Parking And Congestion KILLARNEY has had problems with traffic and parking for a long time and nothing has been done. The junction at Kenmare Place is a busy one and yet buses are allowed to go from here. In general, there are many signs of no enforcement. People park in such a way that holds up all

the traffic. We should have traffic wardens on duty after six o’clock in the evening. Brian McCarthy, Dromhall Park, Killarney

Ministerial Visit To Tackle Flooding I AM very grateful to Minister Kevin “Boxer” Moran and his staff who visited Kerry at my request on Thursday, July 27. During his visit we visited numerous locations where there are problems and difficulties that come under the responsibility of the Minister’s Department. The Minster also met with management and members of Kerry County Council and I am also grateful to council engineers who accompanied us to let the Minister see first-hand the investment that is needed in our county in particular to do with coastal erosion and flooding difficulties. The Minster saw first-hand with locals and local engineer David Doyle in Glenflesk and Foiladown the effects that flooding has had in that area over the last number of years. He then went to see the flooding that occurs in Castleisland and received a comprehensive report in County Buildings on the difficulties we are having in our county. He saw first-hand the coastal erosion on the road to Fenit where all of the Liebherr Crane traffic has to pass on a road that is being seriously eroded by the sea. John Fitzgerald, engineer, explained that there is an application in for funding. We then went to Rossbeigh accompa-

nied by Brian Hickey, engineer, who showed the Minister where an investment of €500,000 is needed to carry out works and the Minister welcomed the fact that the new road is going to be constructed with proper access to the homes that were cut off. He then went to Incharee where works is to be undertaken in the near future, He went onto Cromane where he met locals who explained fully the nightmare they are going through in fear of the sea coming into their homes because of lack of protection to their homes. He then went onto Killarney House where Mr Harry O’Donoghue gave the Minister a tour of the recently refurbished house and the Minister was extremely interested in hearing the history of the house because of Harry’s own lifetime of work in Killarney House and that of his parents and grandparents. We then went on the final leg of his journey where the Minister met with locals in Kenmare who explained the devastation that occurred in the past when the town was flooded and explained the solutions that are required to ensure that this problem will not occur again. Dancers To Step It Out Tomorrow We have many tools in our creativity belt, says Grace Foley

Last week I wrote about asking the universe for guidance when we may be feeling a little lost. Today I want to tell you about my experience of using other artistic practices to help me perform as a singer. During times of worry and stress that inevitably come with trying out new business ideas, and other such stressful endeavours, our creativity can be stifled. I am not always the most disciplined person but I have recently fully committed to using the Headspace app and specifically its “creativity” pack. This has helped calm my mind and I have also found that exercising my creativity in a new way has benefited me hugely. The other day I was doodling some ideas for my company logo. This activity was simply meant to be one where I would come up with some ideas but it turned out to be so much more helpful than I expected. I hadn’t sat down with colouring pen-

cils and a blank page since I was a teenager and I found that I was totally immersed in what I was doing. So much time passed while I sketched and coloured. I am no painter but this practice calmed my mind completely. I found myself feeling quite physically nervous before a recent performance so I sat and tried to do some deep breathing. I felt as though I was actually getting more tense so I decided to listen to a song that always makes me happy... Next thing I knew I was jumping around, hands in the air, out of breath and so much freer in my body! You might presume I would turn to relaxing classical music at times like this but my song of choice is actually “In the Ayer” by rapper Flo Rida! We have so many tools in our artistic belts and we must try to use them all. Also, if in doubt, dance it out! • Grace’s website is www.gracefoley.ie

THE Aine Murphy Academy of Irish Dancing will be stepping it out tomorrow, Saturday, August 12. This time it will be the parents not the students who will be taking to the stage as they trip the light fantastic in a Strictly Come Dancing-style event. The fun takes place at Killarney Racecourse from 8pm, with tickets priced at €10. The judges on the night are Aidan O’ Mahony of Dancing with the Stars fame, Councillor Maura HealyRae and David Rea of Celtic Stes “There will also be a performance by the world-class dancers from my dance school and it promises to be a fun night,” said Aine Murphy.

11.08.17 McLaren

2,000 Hours & 280,000 Bricks Later McLAREN, the makers of the exotic P1 and 570S, has gone to excessive lengths to re-create its latest sports car, the 720S, in LEGO no less. Taking 2000 hours to build, with up to six builders on the project at any one time, the 1:1 scale LEGO McLaren 720S was displayed at the Goodwood Festival of Speed last month where the last 13,000 bricks were applied. It also raised around €3,000 for the Goodwood charity. McLaren is certainly not the first 1:1 scale model to be made from LEGO bricks. Chevrolet showed an incred-

ible take on the LEGO Batmobile at the Detroit Motor Show earlier this year. And also a Romanian-built SAMP, or Super Awesome Micro Project which features an air-propulsion engine. The fully-drivable project boggles the mind, especially the way the engine actuates hundreds of tiny pneumatic LEGO pistons. If that project sounds too challenging, there is a less challenging 161-piece set available. At least you won’t need to put an extension on your house to tackle this 720s project, the kitchen table should suffice…

Decline in New Car Sales THE Society of the Irish Motor Industry (SIMI) has issued the Q2 Motor Industry. The review outlined that new car sales in the first half of 2017 declined by 10% when compared to new cars sold during the first half of 2016. The report highlighted that a combination of factors, including rising housing, rental and health insurance costs and uncertainty surrounding Brexit, were affecting disposable income and making consumers cautious about purchasing big-ticket items. During the first six months, new car

sales declined in every county, with Donegal experiencing the largest decline at 18.6%, while Cavan had the smallest decline of 4.4%. New car sales in Dublin accounted for 40.6% of the total new car market, the report showed. Car registrations in Kerry: Year to date, 2,561 Vs 2016 2,943 down 12.98% The market share for hybrid vehicles increased from 1.6% to 3.2%. At the same time, there has been a welcome rebalancing of the Diesel/Petrol market shares and it is likely that this trend is set to continue toward equality be-

tween the two fuel types. Registrations of new diesel cars, reduced from 71% to 66%. There was a small decrease in new petrol car sales, which were down just 1% and they accounted for 30.2% of all new cars sold. Imported cars, the vast majority of which are from the UK, continued to be a significant part of the overall car market the review found. It showed that during the first half of the year, 46,004 used cars were imported, which represented an increase of 42.6% compared to the same period in 2016. The review also highlights that nearly half

of all imported used cars during this period were five years or older, while the diesel share of used imports is just over 79%. Sterling weakness and a scarcity of second hand cars due to the collapse in new car sales from 2009 onwards, were the main factors behind the strong increase in used imports. The report also shows a number of price decreases in the cost of motoring. The average price of a new car in May 2017 was 4.1% lower than a year earlier, while the cost of motor insurance in May 2017 was 8.4% lower than it was a year earlier.

Michael Fassbender Races WRC Germany In The Ferrari Challenge

ENZO FERRARI’S marketing principles in the early years would only sell his road cars to the rich, famous and glamorous. The Challenge series attracted many celebrities over the years and this year, actor Michael Fassbender brings star power to the Challenge. Local boy best known across the globe for starring roles in films including “Alien: Covenant,” “Steve Jobs,” “Twelve Years a Slave” and “Assassins’ Creed,” has stepped into the real-time

role of racecar driver completing in the 2017 North American Ferrari Challenge racing series. The 488’s 660 horsepower is about what the best Formula One engines made back in the V10 era of 1990-91. A lifelong fan of Ferrari and Formula 1, Fassbender began his training with Ferrari’s “Corso Pilota” driving program last year. A single-model championship series developed by Ferrari for clients who have a passion for racing, the Ferrari Challenge

Trofeo Pirelli has thrilled drivers and fans alike since its inception in 1992. The Challenge is run in three divisions – Europe, Asia, and North. Fassbender will compete in the North American Ferrari Challenge series. At the time of signing up for the challenge, Fassbender didn’t own a car let alone a Ferrari. However, with a long line of actors turned racing drivers, history shows us that once bitten by the bug, a fleet of exotics cars follow… watch this space.

THIS weekend sees the WRC circus arrive in Germany for round ten of the championship. Kris Meeke and co-driver by Paul Nagle, Craig Breen and Andreas Mikkelsen head up the Citroen WR line-up. A reserved approach will be applied by Citroen again this weekend as they continue to come to terms with the car’s issues. Nine-time World Champion Sébastien Loeb this week returned to his old team, Citroen, to test the 2017 Citroen C3. Loeb took part in a tarmac test to assist the team in gathering date ahead of this weekend’s tarmac event amidst a torrid 2017 campaign so far. Citroen has indicated that Loeb could participate in future gravel tests and a possibility of returning to competition. Loeb is contracted to Peugeot, a sister company to Citroen. However that contract runs out at the end of this year. This is fuelling speculation of Loeb returning to competition with Citroen to get their WR campaign back on track. The last round results see Sébastien Ogier and Thierry Neuville on equal points on the top of the leader board with four rounds remaining. Six different winners over nine rounds has made this season the most interesting in recent years. At this stage in the championship there would be a clear favourite but this year the championship will be down to a puncture or spin for the top two and introduce a dnf for either one and that introduces Tanak and Latvala to the mix. The latter is a high possibility with three out of the four remaining rounds on gravel and mixed surfaces. It is all to play for.

Starring Role For Kerry In Italian Motorcycling Magazine KERRY features extensively in a major article all about Ireland, in the summer edition of Mototurismo magazine, a special interest publication which features itineraries and touring suggestions for motorbikers.

Tourism Ireland in Milan, in conjunction with Fáilte Ireland, invited journalists Marco Ghezzi and Claudio Vismara, from Mototurismo, to visit earlier this year. The resulting, extensive article features lots of great photos of places

like the Ring of Kerry, Portmagee and Skellig Michael. And, another popular motorcycling magazine, Motociclismo, also carried a 14-page article all about the Wild Atlantic Way in its July edition. Journalist Leonardo Lucarelli and photographer Tommaso Pini were invited to visit in June and the resulting article featured lots of wonderful photos and information about the western seaboard. Niamh Kinsella, Tourism Ireland’s Manager Italy, said: “We are delighted with the excellent coverage in the summer editions of Mototurismo and Motociclismo magazines. It’s an excellent way to spread the word about Kerry,

the Wild Atlantic Way and Ireland to a large audience of potential Italian visitors. “2016 was the best year ever for tourism from Italy to Ireland, when we welcomed 336,000 Italian visitors, up +8% on 2015. Tourism Ireland is determined to ensure that success continues and we have an extensive programme of promotions under way in Italy in 2017. Publicity is an important element of our overall promotional programme, helping to raise awareness through the Italian media of the many things to see and do on a holiday around the island of Ireland.”

Rise In Abandoned Cars Removed Or Destroyed THERE has been an increase in the number of abandoned cars being removed or destroyed in Kerry. In Kerry, 21 abandoned cars were destroyed last year; that was up from 11 in 2015, and 4 the previous year. Nationally 227 vehicles were picked

up and destroyed by removal firms acting on behalf of councils in 2014; that jumped to 820 last year. Local authorities deal with the removal of vehicles abandoned on public roads or in estates.

CAREY

1ST ANNIVERSARY ACKNOWLEDGEMENT CRONIN

9TH ANNIVERSARY & 22ND BIRTHDAY REMEMBRANCE DALY

In loving memory of my dear husband Paddy Buckley, late of Knocknacopple, Rathmore who died on the 12th August 2012. R.I.P.

In loving memory of Ned Carey, Killeen Gates, Kilcummin who passed on the 30th of July 1997. A Legend never forgotten

“Paddy” A daily thought, a silent tear, Always wishing you were here, Life goes on, we know thats true, But never the same without you.

That devilish full red beard, Never disguised his roguish smile, His face, forever young in years, Held deep, yet cheerful eyes.

Sadly missed by your loving wife Mary.

His guiding hand was gentle, His determination as hard as stone, He was part of a family, with much love, A part of what was our home.

12TH ANNIVERSARY

A charisma totally unchallenged, By anyone who knew him so, A proud father, better than all others, A loving husband who’s always show, That love and family were his very being, And a reason to never go.

CAHILLANE

In loving memory of Kieran Cahillane, late of 158 Pinewood, who died on the 7th August 2005. Somewhere beyond the sunset, Where loved ones never die, You sleep in a beautiful garden, Beneath a golden sky, Though heaven and earth, Divide us Kieran, We are never far apart, For you are always in our thoughts, And forever in our hearts. Always remembered by your loving grandparents Bertie and Teresa, Bernie, Jerry and family and Annette, Danny and family.

21ST ANNIVERSARY COFFEY

A man who through thick and thin, Would always come out on top. A man who’s love for his family, Would never ever stop. That man was our dear father, That man was taken away, By a force known simply as water, On a stormy Autumn’s day. Oh, if we could only cancel his debt, From the salty Atlantic waters, So his life could forever be kept, For me, his wife, his daughters.

In loving memory of Kathleen Cronin Scrahan Court, Ross Road, Killarney Who died on the 15th August, 2016. As we lovingly remember Kathleen, on her first anniversary, her husband Jim, son Denis, daughter Geraldine and their families, We wish to extend out most sincere gratitude to all who sympathised with us. Our appreciation to Fr. Kieran O’Brien, who celebrated her funeral Mass, assisted by Frs. Simon Twomey, Jamie Mannix, Charlie Meagher and Paddy O’Donoghue. First Anniversary Mass for Kathleen Cronin in St. Mary’s Cathedral on Tuesday 15th August 2017 at 6.15pm.

Garden Magic Debby Looney

Debby Looney is finding it hard to believe autumn is already here

Second Growth Spurt I AM GOING to stick with the concept of “late summer” for a few weeks yet. Autumn brings coloured leaves to mind, and the decline of the herbaceous border, but contrary to this, my herbaceous plants seem to be getting a second growth spurt! It is essential to cut back perennials after flowering to get a second flush of blooms. A bit of tedious work, but worth the effort! There are many plants which are looking great at this time of year, Irish Bell Heather, Daboecia cantabrica, (named after the patron Saint of Lough Derg – St Dabheog), is a particular favourite of mine. With its bright purple urnshaped bells, it attracts bees in great number. There is also a white version, which, though not as pretty, flowers almost continually throughout the year. Sedum spectabile is a lovely plant to put near it. Another favourite with bees, it will flower in varying shades of pink for quite a few months. It has thick succulent leaves which are a perfect foil for the heather. Choose from varieties such as Autumn Joy, Jose Aubergine, (purple foliage), or Neon (bubble-gum pink flowers). Buddlejas are coming into their own now, and are aptly named the butterfly bush, as this is where you find butterflies having a feast! Traditionally a plant put at the back of a large shrubbery, it can be too big for the smaller garden. Another drawback has been that it can break in strong winds. Personally, I have always thought Budlejas such as Black Knight, Pink Delight and Lochinch are just too unwieldy (and ugly) in the garden. However a few years ago I planted the dwarf variety “Buzz”, which has proved the marketing campaign correct – it has not grown over four feet! There are several colours to choose from, Ivory, pink, blue and lavender, the flowers are the same size as it’s larger cousin, but the plant remains nice and compact. For an even smaller version, there is the Buddleja “chip” range, which grows to two feet, but I have not been able to source them locally. Yet! My Bottlebrush, or Callistemon, is looking regal at the moment, with its masses of red flowers. In my opinion everyone should have one – well, if you have the space! We are fortunate to be able to grow them here, as in many places it would be too cold. They are fantastic plants, evergreen, excellent for using in flower arranging and there are few plants with such crimson flowers. It looks best in its natural shape, which is gently arching, but it can be cut back after flowering. I always wait until Christmas, when I use lots of it in arrangements. It seems to thrive on this annual raid! • Got a gardening question? Contact Debby Looney on barnhillgarden@gmail.com

In this weekly column, the clergy and members of the pastoral council offer an update on issues concerning the Church locally, nationally and globally

Life Through The Lens Of The Gospels

MATTHEW 14:22-33: The story illustrates the power of faith. Have you noticed that when you believe in someone, or something, you can do things that would not be possible when you are full of doubts? Recall moments when your faith gave you strength and courage? Name for yourself the different kinds of faith that had this effect: belief in yourself, trust in another, faith in God. When Jesus got into the boat the winds ceased. Who has been a Jesus person for you and helped to calm a storm that frightened you or made you anxious? The experience of Peter gives encouragement to us when we waver in our trust and belief in God. In his doubt and fear Jesus reached out to him. Who has reached out a helping hand to you when you felt you were sinking? The story ends with a profession of faith in Jesus as the Son of God. Have you had experiences of being rescued from some hazard or danger, experiences which deepened your faith in the presence and compassion of God for you? John Byrne OSA, Veritas

Advertiser Fantasy Football League Kicks Off Once Again THE Premier League makes its muchanticipated return this weekend and with it comes the new fantasy football season. There’s no better way for fans to put their football management skills to the test and go head-to head with friends and perfect strangers alike with bragging rights and great prizes at up for grabs. Here at the Killarney Advertiser we are delighted to announce that we will once again be running our hugely popular Serie A-dvertiser league in conjunction with our generous sponsors Brian James and Eason. Last year’s competition attracted a whopping 250 entrants and we’re hoping for even more this time out. The good news is that the league has simply been renewed from last year, so for last season’s participants all you have to do is visit the Fantasy Premier League website or app and pick your team. You will then be automatically entered into Serie A-dvertiser for the coming campaign. If this is your first time joining the league, you can sign up by going to ‘Create and join new leagues’ and entering the code 1796307430526. Don’t worry if you haven’t joined before the start of Week 1; you can join at any time and your points will simply be carried over. Once again the competition is free to enter and there are some fantastic prizes on offer. A €50 voucher for Brian James will be awarded every month to the highest-scoring manager and Eason’s are kindly sponsoring a hamper of sports books for the leader at Christmas. The overall winner next May will win the grand prize of a high-end suit from Brian James. Speaking at the launch, sports columnist Adam Moynihan said it was a very special time of year. “There’s always great hope at the start of a new season,” he said. “You always think your team

is perfect and that, like Liverpool, this is going to be your year. Then in Gameweek 1 your best defender breaks his ankle, your star midfielder hands in a transfer request and the brand new striker you had pinned all your hopes on turns out to be a dud. It’s so unpredictable. That’s what’s great about it.” Pressed on who he thought the pre-tournament favourite was, one name came immediately to mind. “It’s hard to look past Conor Healy,” Adam said. “He’s the reigning champion for a reason. He’s a fantasy football expert and fellas will find it tough to knock him off his perch. Hopefully someone does, though, because he’s getting a bit too big for his boots.” “I’d like to say that I have a shot but I think my track record speaks for itself. I’ll be happy with another mid-table finish.”

Kerry Juniors Win All Ireland Title Words: Eamonn Fitzgerald KERRY wrote themselves in to the history books at Portlaoise on Saturday last where they won the All Ireland JFC title defeating Meath 2-19 to 1-14. That puts them at the top of the leader board winning the junior title for the 18th time. Cork come next with 17 titles. In the curtain-raiser Kerry qualified for the All Ireland MFC semi-final when they defeated Louth 1-22 to 2-9. Both the junior and minor teams are champions in their own right, but significantly they are also development squads feeding in to the senior ranks. Already Tadhg Morley, Jason Foley, Adrian Spillane and Gavin Crowley cut their teeth in the junior ranks before Eamonn Fitzmaurice added them to the senior panel.

Minor to senior John O’Shea from Kenmare captained the Kerry minors to All Ireland success and he has joined the senior panel. It is only a matter of time before David Clifford, the richly talented Fossa star, makes it on to the senior panel. He is the best minor I have seen for many years and he proved his worth again on Saturday last in the All Ireland quarter-final when he scored nine points and six of these were from play. Such consistency, such brilliance. He is so good that the Australian scouts are very interested to lure him to play Down Under.

Junior final In the junior final Conor Cox was the chief scorer with a personal tally of 1-8 and 1-5 of that came from play. Tomás Ó Sé also caught the eye. The Gaeltacht dancer scored 1-2. He has scored consistently in this campaign, 2-4 in the Munster final and 1-1 in the All Ireland semi-final. Although he was beaten once on Saturday last in injury time Tomás Mac an tSaoir from An Ghaeltacht kept a great goal. This junior win means that Conor Cox and James Walsh have won three junior All Irelands in recent years.

Minor records Talking of records the Kerry minors are on target for that elusive four-in-a-row All-Irelands and they are odds-on to do just that. They scored 1-22 against

The Toyota Cheetahs and the Southern Kings are the new teams and the whole championship has undergone a dramatic change. Now the 14 teams have been split into 2 ‘Conferences’ with a 21 game season – 152 games in total

Louth and won easily, but their boss Peter Keane has plenty to work on for the semi-final. He was happy with the 1-22 scoring but will wonder how the defence conceded 2-9. “ We turned off and I don’t think we can afford to do that, 2-9 is a good score to kick. It is certainly not a good score to be conceding,“ he said. He will be looking to shore up the defence for Croke Park. Kerry were in control in the first quarter of last Saturday’s game and led 1-7 to 0-1. Donnchadha O’Sullivan scored the Kerry goal. Ciaran Keenan and Eoghan O’Callaghan scored Louth’s goals to cut the deficit to 6 points by the 37th minute. Kerry sensed the comeback by Louth so they upped their scoring once more to win easily, 1-22 to 2-9. This was Kerry’s 22nd consecutive win at minor level and that consistency should be rewarded with just two more hurdles to clear in 2017 for the magical four in a row.

Spa Review 2016 Spa GAA have produced a review of club activities for 2016 and what a hectic year it certainly was for them. Great emphasis was placed on juvenile activities. Living members of the Lissivigeen team of the 1940s are pictured and the start of the Spa club and its association with the Killarney Advertiser over 40 years are mentioned. John Kelly recalls the huge success of the club 31 card drives and it is still going strong. Spa Ladies’ footballers had a busy year. Sheila McCarthy was asked to lend a hand to

across the season. The big derbies have been guaranteed, as the Munster V Leinster match at Thomond Park has become one of the biggest games of the entire season and always a full house. Munster are in Conference A with the likes of Connacht, Cardiff and the Cheetahs. Each team will play each other – home and away, as well as play each team in the other conference. The winners of each conference gets through to the semi-final, while teams in second and third will play in a playoff to take part in the semi finals. All in all, it really won’t be until the fixtures come out that the whole thing will make sense! I’m sure some people out there

are waiting with baited breath to see when Munster head to South Africa! It would certainly be some trip! Either way, we can look forward to top class rugby, with the addition of the South African teams ensuring the PRO14 reaches a much bigger market. There is even talk about adding in a few teams from the USA over the next few years! One can only imagine the logistics involved in organising this, never mind playing! The first round is due to kick off at the beginning of September, so we can hope that the fixture list gets announced pretty soon! It will be great to see these new teams come to Thomond Park!

Killarney Celtic All Set For Historic FAI Cup Bow On the back of an incredible year on the national stage, The Hoops are preparing for another momentous occasion, writes Adam Moynihan

FAI Cup 1st Round Cobh Wanderers v Killarney Celtic Saturday, August 12 at 4pm (Old Church Park, Cobh) Killarney Celtic will make the relatively short trip down to south Cork to face Cobh Wanderers in the opening round proper of the FAI Cup on Saturday. The Hoops earned their place in the prestigious competition thanks to their remarkable run to the last four of the FAI Junior Cup and subsequent qualifier victory over Boyle Celtic of Roscommon. The club would have been hoping for a home draw against a League of Ireland side like Dundalk, Cork City or Shamrock Rovers but for that kind of dream tie to materialise now, they’ll have to see off Cobh first. Eoin Donnellan’s men will be well aware that they’ll have their work cut for them. Cobh Wanderers currently operate in the Munster Senior League where they were runners up in the 2016/17 campaign. They also reached the final of the FAI Intermediate Cup and were unlucky to lose out to Liffey Wanderers (Dublin) in a penalty shoot-out.

It’s a League of Ireland cup and it’s a competition the club has never played in, so it’d be nice to get to the next round.

They have a number of ex-League of Ireland players in their ranks and there will be at least one familiar face in their line-up: former Tralee Dynamos star Brian Fitzgerald is likely to feature

in defence. Celtic will be underdogs but that tag has suited them all year, and captain John McDonagh is confident that his team are ready to do battle. They’ll have to do it without their skipper, however, as he serves a one-match ban following his red card against Boyle. “Preparations have been going well enough,” he said. “There are good numbers at training. It’s kind of hard because we only finished the season three weeks ago but it has been going well. I’m suspended but everyone else should be available.” “It’s a massive game,” he continued. “It’s a League of Ireland cup and it’s a competition the club has never played in, so it’d be nice to get to the next round.” The team has had great travelling support all year and McDonagh is hoping that the green and white faithful can help them to another famous win on Saturday. “They have a supporters bus organised and there’s only a few seats left so that’s good to hear. It helps when you’re playing away. It makes a big difference when you get people up watching it. Hopefully we get the same support the next day.”

John McDonagh

Ahead of his side’s huge FAI Cup clash with Cobh Wanderers, Celtic skipper John McDonaghtalks to Adam Moynihan about his teammates, a long year and goals for next season

Hi Smiley. Thanks for talking to us. No worries. It has been an eventful year for Celtic. What was the highlight? The highlight for me was the quarter final of the FAI Junior Cup against Janesboro at home. Scoring late on to win… That was a good buzz. You haven’t had much of a break. Is it difficult to stay going all year round? It’s very tough. You don’t get the chance to just chill out and let the body get right again. But you have to try and turn it into a positive too and say we’re still fit. All we’re doing now is blowing out the dirty diesel. I’d like the league to be cut down to make it better for fellas and keep more interest, but what can you do? What are your goals for next season? The same as every year. We’ll try to get to all the cup finals in Kerry and try to do well in the national competitions. That’s really the aim. If you can stay in the national competitions ‘til after Christmas there’s a good buzz around the place so that’s what we’re hoping for. Which of your teammates would you least like to get stuck in a lift with? Pa McGrath because he stinks the dressing room out. Which of your teammates is the best at Tinder? That has to be Conor Randall. He’s a dark horse. You’d want to watch him! Who’s the biggest moaner? Peter McCarthy. He’s very bad. Who’s the worst-dressed? Helmer. He was actually wearing flares last year at a game. The young fellas were slagging him to death. He never wore them again. Who spends the most time in the gym? Wayne Sparling. He lives in the gym. He likes the sunbeds too! If you could bring back one ex-player to line out for your club this year, who would it be? John Doyle. That’s an easy one. Serious player. Quality. He’d be the man to turn to. Who’s the best athlete you’ve ever played with? Gary Keane. He’s a freak. He doesn’t even train that much really. He’s just naturally one of them guys. If you had to transfer to another local club, who would it be? I’ll go for Legion. Cop out! What’s your proudest sporting moment? I was injured on the day but the year the boys

won the Munster Champions Cup in Turner’s Cross. Around six years ago. I was very proud that day. If you could go for a drink with any three sportspeople, living or dead, who would they be? John Doyle, Jimmy Falvey and Cheese (Kieran Cahillane). That would be a good session! What are your five favourite sports in order? Soccer, football, I like watching hurling… Rugby… How many’s that? Four. I like watching American football as well. Is there another sport you haven’t tried that you think you’d be good at? I’m sorry I didn’t give Gaelic football more of a go when I was younger. You played a bit with Legion, didn’t you? I played a small bit of juniors and when I was in school I was kind of floating in and around the senior team but I was more soccer all the time. What’s the best sporting moment of all time? Robbie Brady’s goal against Italy in the Euros. That was a great night in town. Do you have any nicknames, Smiley? Yeah I do. Smiley. Is there an app on your phone you couldn’t live without? I’m actually not too into the apps. I got rid of them all. Whatsapp, that’s the only one really. That’d be hopping all the time. Who’s the best man for the banter in the Celtic group? Jamie Spillane is a good fella for the banter. He sends a few drunken messages. What’s your most-used emoji?

What’s the best show on TV? Game of Thrones. Winter is coming! It’s here now! Oh it’s here now, yeah! Yeah. I’m well into that. Serious show. What’s your favourite song at the moment? You’re In Love With a Psycho by Kasabian. What would you sing at karaoke? I only sing one song at karaoke: Robbie Williams - Angels. I’d have to be very drunk though!

Who’s the most famous person in your phone? That’s a tough one… Tadhg O’Keeffe. There was about seven weddings in the last month and he’s been at every one of them. What would you have for your last meal? A good Irish stew. Has to be the mother’s, obviously. Who would play you in a movie about your life? Tom Hanks. The head off each other. Sound! Can you tell me a joke? What’s the difference between a snowman and a snow-woman? I don’t know. Snowballs. Sound Smiley! No worries boy!

Club Captain Declan McCarthy has enjoyed one of the most successful Captain’s Prize weekends that our Club has ever witnessed. The Men’s Club entry of 361 players was a justifying testament to Declan’s popularity as our Captain, and although the weather went against those who were playing on the Sunday, the scoring was excellent nonetheless. The competitions commenced earlier in the week when Declan’s prizes to the Junior Boys and girls Clubs were played, and the Junior boys section results were as follows, 1st Gavin McCarthy(17) 46pts, 2nd Jay Steadman(12) 44pts & 3rd John Joe Buckley(24) 42pts. The time-sheets for both Saturday and Sunday were filled to almost total capacity, and the scoring was a true reflection of the numbers who took part. Sunday evening was the highlight of the weekend and the festivities commenced at 7.00 P,M, and a drinks reception was followed by a buffet meal at the Clubhouse. The Golf Club Male Choir gave a most pleasant repertoire of many of the favourites from the Silver screen, with a mixture of old and new tunes. The speeches and presentation followed, and the principal prize-winners were as follows. The winner with a fantastic score of 41 points was Robert Cussen playing off of 6 handicap, Robert’s back nine of 25 points was just simply incredible and included 5 birdies, including 3 over the last 3 holes, those same holes were the downfall of many other scores over the weekend. The full results were 1st Robert Cussen(6) 41pts, 2nd Ted Healy(13) 39pts, 3rd George Vass(4) 39pts, 4th Niall McCarthy(5) 38pts, 5th James Curran(8) 38pts, best gross Shane Horgan(3) 37pts, 6th Gavin McCarthy(15) 37pts, 7th Neil Coffey(6) 37pts, 8th Donal “Gap” O’Sullivan(9) 37pts, 9th Stephen Brod-

Captain Declan wishes to congratulate John Cahill on winning the Club Championship, John overcame a very Dogged Alan MacSweeney on the 18th green in a ding-dong encounter, and only with good use of one of his Strokes received. In the semi-final John had defeated 6 time Champion Dermot Roche, while in the other semi Alan over-came the in-form Brian Holden. Congratulations John on adding your name to a long and illustrious List of winners of this most prestigious competition which is possibly one of the hardest of all, to become the Champion in, in our Club. Hard luck to our U12 team who were beaten by a skillful Cillard team in a well contested game in Dr Crokes on the 28th of July. Kathryn Ryan was

by far the best player on the pitch with a superb performance. Massive improvements by Hannah Ryan and Anne Hickey seen them convert some nice goals in the first half. Yen Leniston came into her own in the second half and denied Cillard on several occasions. Hannah Ryan scored her second goal with a great ground stroke from a tight angle. Final score 5.2 to 3.0. Keep training girls, the hard work is paying off. On Thursday the 10th the U12 team will take on Millstreet in Barraduff Community Field. Well done to our U10 team who won the Golden Ticket and will take part in a blitz prior to the Kerry Junior contender against Dublin Camogie this Saturday. Training as usual Monday evening from 6.15-7.15pm in Dr Crokes GAA Pitch.

On The Ball Dr. Crokes

Under 13 Tournament The club’s U 13 ladies participated in this North Kerry Board competition, run off in the John Mitchel’s Complex on July 29th. With 16 teams competing, Dr.Crokes were grouped with, Rathmore, Abbeydourney and John Mitchels, and topped their group to qualify for the semi final and after a most exciting game v Beaufort, reached the Cup final. Unfortunately after a spirited performance, their only loss of the day was to their last opponents Austin Stacks. Congratulations to all our girls who ‘ flew the flag’ over their five matches. Faith Lockett kept goal with distinction throughout all five games .Emma Kelly and Rocha Clifford were close to impenetrable all day long and along with the dashing Debbie Maye, Katie McCarthy and Selina Thawiset Collins had defence turning to attack time after time. Laura O’Shea, played on every line of the team over the five games, and Niamh O’Donoghue ,Cara O’ Sullivan and Alicia Keane demonstrated their skills base by playing both in the forwards and backs whenever they were needed. The midfield combination of Kelly O’ Sullivan and Pia Hickey must have run the distance between Killarney and Tralee, over the day. Ella Galvin’s crucial goal and Ali O’ Donoghue timely block down were what put daylight between the teams in the semifinal. Leah McMahon led the teams attack from centre forward and her combination with Sinead Oliver at full forward, and Lucy O Leary, on the wing ,had their teams total score

for the day at 8 goals and 20 points. Sincere thanks to all the parents who were able to make it over to Tralee to support the girls. To Sinead Galvin for her discernment between freeze gel and deep heat, and to Brendan and Pádraig who looked like they knew what was going on at all times. Under 16 The Crokes secured a 2-7 to 1-5 victory over the Legion in their final round of the County League on Wednesday evening. They will now face Austin Stacks at home in the County Semi Final. FAMILY FUN DAY The heavy showers on Saturday morning gave little hint of the excellent weather to follow in the afternoon which was exactly what the doctor

ordered for our Family fun day and BBQ.A fine turnout - many of whom were new families to the club - relaxed in the ideal conditions as the children covered every blade of grass in Derreen. One could not have asked for more and it’s due to the diligent work of Brian Moriarty and his Social Events Committee who are fast becoming experts at these important club occasions. Face-painting, treasure hunt, raffles, target ball, pitch and putt along with live music from Tom Lucey all melted together to make the whole event a great day out. Not for the first time though central to the success was the culinary skills of professional chefs Connie Carroll and Timmie Brosnan who gave so generously of their time and expertise to keep the crowd fed with the tastiest of BBQ food. They were ably assisted by Margaret Reen, Joanne Downey who is a regular at every match and event run by the club and without these willing volunteers the G.A.A. would be much the poorer (special thank you to Shane, Cassie and Émear).A big míle buíchos to everybody involved and who attended and look forward to many more social events in the future. CLUB SHOP We are delighted to say that Maura McCarthy our most able merchandise and shop director has brought in a whole new range of high quality club gear. Ranging from light shirts right up to warm winter jackets there is certainly something there for all ages from juvenile right up to those who remember black and white television. Ideal gifts for all occasions Maura will put you right and it won’t break the bank.
