A groundbreaking new drug could soon be on the market for haemophilia patients across the world as a Killarney man's clinical trial has dramatically changed his life. | By Michelle Crean Brian O'Mahony (62) - who has lived with the condition for over six decades - this week told the Killarney Advertiser that as a sufferer whose life has been severely impacted by the condition the success of the drug "is life-changing". Currently Chief Executive of the Irish Haemophilia Society, Brian from Dalton's Avenue is the only Kerry man - and only one of three in the country and just one of 54 globally - taking part in the trial. It's hoped that the drug which is only suitable for adult sufferers, could be on the market as early as 2022. For Brian, having haemophilia, which is a bleeding disorder as a result of the body missing the Factor IX protein which helps clot the blood, meant injecting himself twice a week to keep his levels regular. An active life meant taking extra doses

to keep his health in check as bruising, falls or knocks could mean bleeding which he'd be unable to control and may see him hospitalised.

CLINICAL TRIAL

Brian jumped at the chance to take part in the new gene therapy trial earlier this year and it's been such a success that he now no longer has to inject himself. "I have severe haemophilia," Brian told the Killarney Advertiser. "I was taking the injections twice a week and that gives you an increased Factor IX. I would have done a lot of international travel up until this year and you're looking at your activities." The new therapy, he explained, is a virus injected into the body. "In order to get DNA into the system they give you a virus in an intravenous injection, a large dose into the body. This infusion of the matter goes into the liver cells. Prior to this my Factor IX was less than one percent. Now I'm near the normal range. I haven't had to take an injection since February. This is a functional cure. I've had no bleeds since and I'm fitter and healthier. It's life-changing." Brian, former President or the World Federation of Haemophilia Organisation and President of the European Haemophilia Organisation, says there's

CURE: A new clinical drug trial has been life-changing for Killarney man Brian O'Mahony.

800 sufferers with the condition in Ireland - 270 who have a severe form. He hopes the therapy will last 10 years or even a person's lifetime. "Hopefully this will light the way forward."

Fifth arrest in unexplained death case | By Sean Moriarty Killarney Gardaí have this week questioned five different people in relation to an investigation into the unexplained death of a man in his 20s that occurred on August, 29 outside a premises on the Muckross Road. One man in his 30s remained in Garda custody as the Killarney Advertiser closed for press yesterday (Thursday) night after being arrested earlier in the day. On Tuesday, two men were arrested and later released without charge. A further two arrests were made on Wednesday and both these men were also released later that day. The fifth arrest was made yesterday morning (Thursday) and that man remained in custody yesterday evening. Superintendent Flor Murphy of Killarney Garda Station confirmed to the Killarney Advertiser that five arrests have been made in relation to the incident in which 26-year-old Darragh Sheehan, who was from Doneraile in North Cork, was found unconscious outside a Muckross Road premises. “It is a very tragic situation,” Superintendent Murphy told the Killarney Advertiser. “Tragic because a young man lost his life and tragic because the incident occurred on the premises of decent business people who were only trying to make a pound.” Four men have been released without charge and a file will now be prepared for the Director of Public Prosecutions.

School plans €100k specialised playground fundraiser | By Sean Moriarty A Beaufort school this week launched a major fundraising campaign - with a target of €100,000 - to build a specialised playground for children with special needs. St Francis Special School, one of Kerry’s longest-serving special needs facilities, plans to build the playground for its 50 student school and those behind the project are appealing to businesses and the wider community in Killarney

and surrounds to help fund the development. The playground will include a custom wheelchair swing, roundabout, wheelchair seesaw, sensory house, and wheelchair accessible sand table and the school is appealing for corporate donations, private donations or in lieu of monies – building materials, contractors and trades, skilled and non-skilled labour, design or building expertise or people’s time to assist with fundraising. “In building the school around the needs of the student where socialisa-

tion, fun and play are hugely important parts of the experience, it is now time to expand and develop this part of the school's offering,” principal Liam Twomey said. The mission of the school is to enable, encourage and enrich the lives of its 50 children who attend each day with a range of moderate to high/profound needs, he added. To find out more about making a donation contact the school on 064 6644452 or email info@sfss.ie.

FUNDRAISER: Teacher Breda Courtney and principal Liam Twomey launched the playground fundraiser at St Francis Special School in Beaufort this week.

Killarney girls offer designer handbag to raise funds for Chloe | By Michelle Crean A fundraising effort for little Chloe Jenkins, a toddler who is battling Neuroblastoma - a very rare and aggressive form of child cancer - has been launched by two Killarney girls who are giving away a Prada designer handbag as part of a Christmas giveaway.

Volunteers experience demand for food parcels A new food project in Ballydribeen - which is helping people across Killarney town - has seen demand grow substantially in the last few months. | By Michelle Crean Set up in late June between South Kerry Development Partnership (SKDP) and Marks & Spencer in Killarney, the food project sees parcels of perishible foods delivered to homes all over the town on a daily basis. An initiative which was instigated by Marks & Spencer, it is run out of the Ballydribeen Community House at 59 Doirin Alainn. Each evening, food such as frozen meals, fresh vegetables, fruit, bread, buns and other items which are close to reaching their best before date are collected by SKDP and delivered, refrigerated overnight. It's then packed suitable for the clients needs by staff from the service the following morning and delivered. Tús Supervisor Ger Moynihan, who is running the project, said that as word has spread more and more are asking for the packages. "We started the project in late June,"

he told the Killarney Advertiser. "It has grown since we started it - we have seen an increase in demand over the last few months. It's alarming the amount of people who are in need of it." Breda O'Shea added that now due to demand for the service they're looking for more businesses to donate food, as well as more volunteers to help pack the food. "We're now, due to demand, looking to expand the service and are looking for more businesses to come on board. We'll make arrangements to collect it. We're also trying to get more volunteers to form a community group or organisation to get involved." Ger added that by setting up a group "it opens up more opportunities for funding" for the project. If you would like to get involved particularly if you live in the Ballydribeen area get in touch for an application form. Contact Siobhán at Ballydribeen Community House on 064 6626672 or email officeballydribbeen@gmail.com.

Lisa Sheahan and Meadbh McSweeney started the initiative online in recent weeks to raise much needed funds for Chloe via the GoFundMe page: Chloe’s Journey. The two friends, who work with Chloe's uncle Paddy, were so taken by Chloe's story and how she is bravely battling childhood cancer that they wanted to help. The limited edition designer Prada handbag is worth over €1,200 and the draw will take place next week on Thursday, December 17. To be in with a chance of winning the girls are asking people to donate the minimum GoFundMe amount of €5 to Chloe’s Journey GoFundMe page. "We'd been following Chloe's story on social media and just wanted to do something for her and her family," Lisa said. "It'd just melt your heart to see her having to go through so much." Chloe lives in Cork with mom Deborah from Killorglin, and dad Gareth from Dublin. In March 2019, Chloe was diagnosed with Neuroblastoma which is one of

the hardest cancers to cure. Chloe’s Journey was set up to generate funds to help with Chloe’s ongoing care and treatment. Chloe had surgery in September 2019 which removed her left kidney and 85 percent of the tumour. In December Chloe travelled to Germany for specialist proton therapy to target the remaining tumour entwined around major organs and blood vessels. In January this year Chloe began a six month intensive immunotherapy treatment. However, in July Deborah and Gareth received the devastating news that Chloe’s cancer had regrown. Chloe has undergone multiple rounds of chemotherapy over this past number of months to try to treat the aggressive cancer. Chloe’s next round of chemotherapy will start on December 18 and finish on Christmas Eve – so hopefully she will be home in time for Santy. Any funds raised for Chloe's Journey will be used to alleviate the financial stress for Deborah and Gareth so that they can focus on her treatment and be by her side. Funds raised will help alleviate some of the financial costs associated with caring for a seriously ill child, and if the need arises to travel abroad at a later stage for further specialist treatment. "Seeing how brave Chloe is and how she continues to smile through it all just made us want to help in any way we could. She's so adorable and is a real little warrior," Meadbh added.

'See Something – Say Something’ service to cease at end of year | By Sean Moriarty Killarney Gardai say they are disappointed that the ‘See Something-Say Something’ text alert service - which allows members of the public to report suspicious behaviour or public order issues anonymously - is to cease. The campaign was originally launched in

Tralee in July 2018 and rolled out a year later in Killarney. At the time of its launch in Kerry it was hoped that the service could be the template for a nationwide plan. The Killarney Advertiser understands that the service, which was supported by Killarney Chamber of Tourism and Commerce, was not financially viable for the commercial operator of the service. Superintendent Flor Murphy of Killarney

Garda Station said he was disappointed to learn that the service will be discontinued from December 31 next. “It allowed members of the public to report acts of criminality, they might be sitting have a coffee and see a hit and run in a car park or anti-social behaviour on the streets and they could text in the info and we would respond accordingly,” he told the Killarney Advertiser. “Now they will have to go through the channels and give

their name and details and not everyone is comfortable with that.” Local TD Pa Daly will raise the issue with the Department of Justice. "The services will be suspended on December 31 if funding is not secured to run them. I have asked Minister McEntee if she will raise this with the Garda Commissioner to secure the support and funding necessary to continue with 'See Something-Say Something'," he said.

Community steps up to give gifts to elderly There was a massive outpouring of kindness for the first ever 'Christmas Together' Garda campaign which will see gifts given to 270 older residents in the Killarney community. | By Michelle Crean After a public appeal, which was featured in the Killarney Advertiser in late November, members of the community stepped up and generously donated gifts which will be given to a number of local nursing homes including St Columbanus Home, Killarney Community Hospital, Killarney Nursing Home on Rock Road and Our Lady of Lourdes Nursing Home in Kilcummin, as well as Heather Lee Nursing Home at Lawlor’s Cross and residents in Holy Cross Gardens Day Care Centre and Oakwood, and Cheshire

Home. However, Garda Brendan O'Donovan is hoping that over the next few days that more gifts will be donated to give a little something to healthcare staff also, especially this, the year of COVID. "People have been ringing, emailing and coming in asking what they can do to help," Garda O’Donovan, who set up the initiative, told the Killarney Advertiser. "People have been fantastic from businesses to the public. We also have 19 schools involved and will be collecting them next week."

Bellview lights up for charity | By Michelle Crean Little elves have been very busy as they've added a hint of Christmas by decorating one childcare centre. Normally Bellview Elf, Buddy, and his friends turn up and use the children’s arts and crafts to decorate the area, take a photo of each child and transform them into a Christmas character to add to the display. This unfortunately couldn’t happen this year due to COVID-19 as the children are entering through various entry points in the building so they don’t have the same access to the reception area. This required staff to think outside the box to make sure the children and their families still had the same Bellview Christmas Experience, so they decided to make it bigger and better and expand it to outside. Planning started in early October and the team decided everything would be handmade by the staff and their families. "It was a massive team effort and we could not be prouder of the team we have here and their families for pulling it together in such a tough time to make sure the children and the local community had a magical Christmas," Manager Maura Leane told the Killarney Advertiser.

DONATIONS

"Palettes were gathered and drilled together, paint was very kindly donated from Mike from M D O’Sheas, tyres were donated from Hoares Machinery in Killorglin and Neal Maple cut 213 pieces of wood into shapes, to represent every child in the crèche, which are now hanging from the trees within the display. In

Items they're looking for include non-perishable goods including books, puzzles, personal care products, sweets and products. Donations will be sterilised and isolated for a number of days prior to being distributed on December 22 or 23, he added. "I'd like to thank everyone for their generosity, and all my Garda colleagues for their support." All donations can be dropped to Killar-

addition to that Raymond Scannell kindly donated a Christmas tree and Diarmuid O'Mahony Electrical helped us light up our display. On a frosty Saturday morning, the Bellview Woods team transformed the front grass playground into a magical Christmas display for the children. Their faces lit up once they saw the display. It has been amazing to see how our display has created such happiness in what has been a tough year for all." They also wanted to raise money for a local charity which is close to many a heart so they selected Kerry Cancer Support Group. "COVID-19 has made life difficult for so many this year including Kerry Cancer Support Group. We have set up a fundraising box in our display if any members of the public would like donate. We hope many families and friends will come and see our display and it will help spread some festive cheer."

This week Killarney International Choir learned that they cannot go ahead with the planned event as they have received further clarification from the Diocese regarding new guidelines for choral performances. They had hoped to bring some festive cheer which was to be streamed live online on Killarneyparish.com and on Facebook live with a feast of Christmas songs, readings and reflections, as well

as performances by local singer Grace Foley, Killarney Golf Club Choir, and the Foley Sisters. "We have received further clarification from the Diocese, regarding new guidelines for choral performance in our churches," Sheila Casey told the Killarney Advertiser yesterday (Thursday). "Our planned concert in St Mary's Cathedral on December 20, would be seen as 'a spreader'. Even for soloists there would have to be gaps. The guidelines are clear - singing is seen as risky. We wish to thank all the choirs, soloists, musicians and readers who were enthusiastically supporting the event. Fr Kieran is looking forward to having us in the cathedral, with congregation, at a suitable time in 2021."

South Doc strike action deferred | By Michelle Crean Strike action by South Doc staff - including those in Killarney which was due to go ahead next Friday (December 18) has been deferred. The move comes after an agreement was reached at the Workplace Relations Commission (WRC) on Wednesday over a pay dispute with the HSE. Killarney based call centre employees, who work in Hillard’s Lane in Killarney town centre managing the out of hours medical service, as well as other South

Doc staff across the county had served strike notice on the HSE. Staff had sought that the HSE restore pay reductions imposed on workers in Section 39 organisations in line with an agreement brokered at the Workplace Relations Commission in October 2018. "The strike action on December 18 has been deferred," Donie Doody, Branch Organiser with SIPTU, told the Killarney Advertiser yesterday (Thursday). "There was an offer made as part of the recommendation and they'll receive the pay increase over a period of time. Also, further negotiations will be held in the New Year."

More support for local moms

There's now even more support for new moms and moms-tobe in the Killarney area as there's a new counsellor which offers free parent to parent support.

| By Michelle Crean Louise Doyle, who lives in Cahernane Meadows, has just qualified as the first Cuidiu breastfeeding counsellor in Killarney. The mom of two will now be in a position to help local parents and pregnant women as well as others throughout Kerry seeking advice about all things to do with breastfeeding. The Kerry branch of Cuidiu was set up by Tania Lawlor from Ardfert who became the first qualified Cuidiu counsellor in Kerry. Second to qualify was Sinead O'Sullivan from Ballymac. The local group met regularly for coffee, a chat and to give helpful advice before the COVID restrictions meant they had to move online. Today (Friday) Louise hosted the virtual meeting for the very first time. "We had started up a group in January in the Wooden Spoon in Kilcummin every month but that had to stop because of

COVID," Louise told the Killarney Advertiser. "Now we hold a virtual meeting via Zoom every Friday at 10.30am. The aim is to support breastfeeding mothers and we're open to all forms of breastfeeding. Some moms may feel like they need to be exclusively breastfeeding but whether they are breastfeeding combined with formula - all are welcome. Moms-to-be and new moms are welcome as it's a great way for them to connect." Sometimes there are people on the call in the group that have problems and that's where the counsellors are there to help, Louise, who undertook two years specialised training in Dublin, explained. "Cuidiu is a charity run by volunteers. We also have four more trainees in Kerry and these moms in training will be qualified next year. Cuidiu has a list of volunteers online that parents can call." Scéal Eile reopens as take away bakery | By Sean Moriarty The popular Scéal Eile café on High St has this week reopened as a take away bakery. Like many other businesses, the café was forced to close on March 16 and yesterday (Thursday) marked the first time it opened in nine months. It will operate as a take away bakery on Thursday, Friday, and Saturday this week and next. It will extend its opening days in the run up to Christmas by operating Monday of that week until Christmas Eve (Thursday 24). The bakery will open between 10am and 4pm each day except Christmas Eve which will have the earlier closing time of 1pm.

EXCLUSIVE

Scéal Eile will get an early-morning delivery from Marguerite's Bakery in Newcastle West, in County Limerick, a sister company to the High St eatery. They will offer a range of Christmas favourites including cakes, plum puddings and mince pies. There is also a full range of Christmas hampers and daily treats for sale over the counter. “We are taking orders for Christmas cakes, birthday cakes, any sort of celebration cake,” Manager Annette Horgan told the Killarney Advertiser. “It is great to be back to see everyone again.” Early in the New Year it is hoped to complete a refurbishment of the dining area ahead of a full reopening in the spring.

Julie’s Barber Shop has relocated to a new premises on Plunkett St. | By Sean Moriarty

EXCLUSIVE

The popular barber shop has operated out of 71 High St for the last 20 years but earlier this week moved to a newer base on the town’s pedestrian street. Last month Kerry County Council erected a protective steel frame outside 71 High St as it has concerns about the safety of the structure. “We have moved," Julia Healy told the Killarney Advertiser. “My staff have been with me 20 years and we all moved together. My customers know where I am too. Everything is the same – even our booking telephone number.”

Like all barber shops Julia’s is facing new challenges in these COVID-19 times but she tackles it with her usual humour. “It is one in and one out now and not a million people piling in on top of one another and having the banter and sharing their news," she added. In a further expansion Julie’s Barbers has recently opened a second shop in Barraduff. “A lot of my customers and staff are from out that way, Barraduff and Rathmore, so why not?” she added. Booking for both outlets can be made on 085 812 1498.

Cinema Killarney prepares to reopen | By Sean Moriarty Cinema Killarney, on the East Avenue Road, is preparing to reopen after weeks of lockdown. Owner/Operator Tommy Cooper confirmed to the Killarney Advertiser that

he is preparing to reopen the popular movie theatre next Friday (December 18) and is currently working behind the scenes to make it happen. He is yet to finalise a programme of events, but has hopes to have festive blockbusters like ‘Wonder Woman 1984’ and ‘Dreamland’ as listings by next Fri-

day. The popular movie club ‘The Art House’ is planned to be shown on screen Tuesday next (December 15). ‘The Art House’ is aimed at movie buffs and show films that are not on general release. It is run in conjunction with the Kerry Film Festival and Cinema Killarney is a festival

partner. “'The Art House' season was put off over the pandemic but I am really hoping to have it back next week,” Mr Copper told the Killarney Advertiser. “I am talking to the distribution houses and hope to have some of the big movies on show in time for Christmas. I have to prepare as best I can and hope that people have the confidence to go to the cinema in these times.”

"This year, we have to do things differently and we hope that by streaming his concert on New Year’s Eve, people will tune in to enjoy his music

and celebrate in anticipation of returning to a live music performance in the not too distant future. We would once again like to thank the Department for their support. We would also like to thank the various artists that have reduced their performance costs in order to make these gigs happen. SINGING: Pupils from Kilcummin National School, pictured with Garda Brendan O'Donovan, gathered outside Our Lady of Lourdes Nursing Home to sing Christmas carols on Wednesday morning.

Sing-song brightens residents' day Sounds of Christmas carols from young voices brought a huge sense of happiness to many in Our Lady of Lourdes Nursing Home this week. Pupils from First and Second Class at Kilcummin National School gathered at a social distance outside the home and sang loud and proud on Wednesday morning as part of the An Garda Síochána 'Christmas Together' campaign. The pupils were joined by the organiser, Garda Brendan O’Donovan, who collected cards created by the pupils of Kilcum-

min NS for the residents of the nursing home and other nursing homes in the Killarney area. "We are encouraging families to drop presents for the residents and staff of the nursing homes in the Killarney vicinity, to Killarney Garda Station," principal Gillian Sheehan told the Killarney Advertiser.

President of MTU revealed The Minister for Further and Higher Education, Research, Innovation and Science, Simon Harris TD, yesterday (Thursday) announced that Professor Maggie Cusack is to be appointed the President of Munster Technological University (MTU). MTU will be officially established on January 1 next and will be Ireland’s newest technological university. The consortium of Cork Institute of Technology (CIT) and Institute of Technology Tralee (ITT) was designated as a technological university earlier this year. Prof. Cusack has a long established career in academic leadership and research. Currently the Dean of Faculty of Natural Sciences, Professor of Biomineralisation at the University of Stirling, she brings a broad portfolio of academic leadership experience and skills that are ideally suited to leading MTU and establishing the university at the forefront of technological universities. In addition, Prof. Cusack has an excellent scientific reputation, she has led a diverse faculty in the University of Stirling, having previously led a newly merged department at the University of Glasgow in addition to successful roles as a Graduate School head and International lead. Prof. Cusack will lead MTU

Thanks to Garda O'Donovan for his commitment to this festive community initiative. Thanks also to class teacher Miss McCarthy and SNA Teresa for organising the visit to the grounds of our neighbouring nursing home. We look forward to welcoming the residents back into the school in the future when it will be safe to do so. In the interim, we hope to

at a pivotal time in the history of higher education in Ireland. Her experience and leadership ability will provide the catalyst to launch MTU and guide it through its successful establishment and continued development. "On January 1, the culmination of many years of planning, preparation and hard work will come together as Munster Technological University comes into existence," Prof. Cusack said. Our senior pupils will spread some festive cheer to the residents of the Heather Lee Nursing Home with a short outdoor music session, thanks to teacher Mr Kelliher and Tony O’ Connor, Kilcummin Comhaltas, later this week. This event is weather dependent, so we are preparing a live Zoom session in the event that the clouds try to dampen festive spirits in Kilcummin!"

He said that the Government operates on one hand by blocking a small payment to student nurses last week and then this week have provided €12m a year as an additional payment to former Taoisigh and Ministers. "This latest pre-Christmas giveaway comes with increased annual payments of €32,000 annually to three super junior minsters on top of their salary, in addition approval has been given for

additional payments totalling around €55,000 per annum to the whips of Fianna Fáil, Fine Gael, Sinn Fein, Greens, Social Democrats, Labour and Solidarity," he said. "The Government has been telling the people to applaud and appreciate the nurses and frontline staff, while of course I agree that we need to do this particularly this year as nurses and frontline staff have been endangering their lives and the lives of their families due to COVID, what the nurses really need is to be adequately paid and treated fairly."

There are amazing women in football around the country. We need them to step forward with their qualities," said Ramona, who is the only Kerry woman to complete the course. Killorglin students runners-up at Generation €uro Awards The Central Bank of Ireland recognised the achievements of young economics students from Killorglin Community College at the Generation €uro Students’ Award virtual final on Friday, November 27. Students from Killorglin faced stiff competition from Sutton Park School, Dublin, and were crowned runners-up in the final as they took on the role of the ECB Governing Council by carrying out an analysis of the economy and setting an appropriate interest rate for the Euro area. The teams talked in detail about the challenges currently faced by the Euro zone, and were commended for their ability to analyse the rapidly changing economic environment against the backdrop of the COVID-19 crisis. Both teams received trophies to mark their achievement. The Generation €uro Students’ Awards presentation represents the culmination of nearly a year’s work for the successful student teams. The Central Bank is delighted to deliver the final virtually and to recognise the achievements of the competing teams. Deputy Governor Sharon Donnery highlighted the achievement of those

who reached the final, saying, “through their participation in this competition, the students from Sutton Park School and Killorglin Community College demonstrated a strong understanding of the principles of economics and of monetary policy, and they showed rigour in their assessment of the monetary policy options available as they put themselves in the shoes of the ECB Governing Council”. Speaking about the Killorglin team, which consisted of team members Ethan Victor, Luke Diggin and Ivan Loi led by their teacher Lisa Cahillane, she said “they showed excellent knowledge of the current economic conditions in a very uncertain world”. Commenting on the importance of engagement with the next generation of economists, Deputy Governor Donnery said “the Central Bank is very committed to playing its part in encouraging the economists of the future. It’s very much in our interests to ensure there is a strong pipeline of young people interested in economics who may choose to forge careers in this area in the future. It is the case that the study of economics can open the door to so many careers”.

Tim Jones supports 'Shop Local' with hamper giveaway

Tim Jones Family Butchers has been operating in Killarney since 1991. Over the past number of years they have enjoyed modest growth and have expanded their business to two shops, one on Park Road, the other in the Innisfallen Mall. Tim supplies some of the finest restaurants, hotels and B&Bs in the Kerry region and when COVID-19 hit in March this side of the business was hit hard. “Yes, it’s been a trying year for us, especially on that side of things, but it has been difficult for everyone in business and there’s no point getting down about it, we just put an extra focus on trying to support our loyal customers, ensuring they continue to get great quality meat at affordable prices,” Tim told the Killarney Advertiser. Tim wanted to help ease the financial stress that comes with the festive season and came up with a novel idea to help customers spread the cost of their Christmas dinner. “We went about setting up a system inshop whereby the customer can fill out a Christmas order form. It’s very easy; they write down their details, tick off their selection of meat and away they go. Our customers have the option of paying up front or pay weekly in either shop. It’s great, the customers just pop in each week and pay off a small amount, by the time Christmas comes around we are all square and they are calling to collect a monster Christmas meat hamper. There is a bit of extra admin on our end but the

reaction has been fantastic and customers really appreciate that kind of thing." Tim Jones is well-known for his support of local sports clubs and other events in town and was delighted to get involved in The Killarney Advertiser's 'Shop Local' campaign. “It’s a great idea and it’s a bit of fun, shoppers are hopefully getting close to collecting all four coloured vouchers now and best of luck to them all in the big draw next week." Thanks to Tim Jones Family Butchers and the Killarney Advertiser, Christmas has come early for one lucky family. Linda Brennan (pictured below) won our Facebook competition last week which was run to celebrate the launch of the campaign. Speaking to the Killarney Advertiser she said, “I have five men at home, my husband Andy and four sons, Arron (19), Darragh (16), Cian (13) and nine-year-old Luke, even they will have a job of getting through this amount of meat." Included in the hamper was a fresh turkey, half a green ham, a roast loin of pork joint, 2lb of sausages, 1lb of sausage meat, one black and white pudding, 1lb of rashers, a dozen eggs, and a 5kg bag of potatoes. Handing over the prize to Linda, Tim Jones said "it’s great the hamper was won by a big family because our hampers are jam packed this year, and as I often say to our customers – better to be looking at it rather than for it".

WINNER: Linda Brennan, pictured with Tim Jones, has won the Tim Jone's Family Butchers Christmas hamper in association with the Killarney Advertiser.

HEALTH & FITNESS Advice - By Brian Foley Brian is available for advice and fitness consultations, Call 087 403 0894 or email info@activate.ie • www.activate.ie

Fitness and motivation in a world of inconsistency 2020 has been a year like no other, businesses closed everywhere, including gyms, and everyone was forced to train at home. I heard consistently from people who felt very unmotivated, flat and lifeless. Although gyms are now reopened I am still hearing these stories, “I can’t find my mojo”, “I can’t get motivated”. Understandably, people are struggling with so much uncertainty, so many changes to how we live and increased isolation. We don’t want to minimise the emotional toll of this period of life. One thing we can all appreciate: Exercise can benefit people struggling with their mental and emotional welfare. Even in calmer times, exercise is roundly regarded as a side-effect-free way to improve your mood, so let’s dive in and find some motivation to train! When we meet with new clients, we always discuss their reasons for training and their goals. It’s so important to know why your clients want to work out. We don’t scratch the surface. We get to the deep reasons – the reasons that will keep a person going even when challenges arise. So, if you’re feeling unmotivated right now, it’s a great time to check in with yourself and do a little interview to find out why you work out. This might sound silly, but you might surprise yourself with this exercise. I’ll interview myself. Q: Brian, why do you work out? B: I want to look good, be strong, stay healthy and live independently as long as possible. It also helps me manage stress and anxiety right now. Q: Brian, no one can see you, you’re locked down, who cares what you look like? B: Right. But I still want to be strong, stay healthy and take care of myself as long as possible. Q: You could get COVID or the flu or a cold, so why train to stay healthy when it’s not really in your control? B: Well, I believe that if I’m strong and healthy, I’ll recover faster from anything. Also, training helps me manage my stress levels on a daily basis which is another buffer against illness. Q: You no longer compete in sports. What’s the point of trying to be strong?

CHARITY PARTNER: Manor West Retail Park has announced Enable Ireland as its Christmas charity partner. Pictured are: Sean Scally (Enable Ireland Kerry Services) with Derek Rusk (Manager Manor West Retail Centre).

Manor West Retail Park announces its Christmas charity partner

B: Even if I can’t focus on strength goals and competition right now, I still want to move some weight to stay healthy and keep my confidence high. Daily workouts are essential for that. By digging just a little deeper, I’m reminding myself of all the reasons why fitness is important to me. That prevents me from focusing only on one goal. Imagine I only had one reason to train right now and it was a weightlifting meet. I’d be crushed that it was cancelled and I wouldn’t feel like picking up a barbell. But when I dig in, I find that I have more than one reason for working out, and then I feel motivated. Lockdown is “exposing your why”. It’s forcing you to look at yourself and challenge how you frame your goals. Now is a great time to take a giant step back, examine your motivation and restructure your thinking to stay on track. Moping and feeling disheartened won’t serve you, it’ll only contribute to a spiral of depression. Instead, get back in touch with your deepest desires and find the fire to get moving. It doesn’t matter what you choose to do right now, either. Free YouTube videos, IG influencer workouts (even though I bash these so much!), your own plan, working with an online coach - it all works. As long as you’re pursuing fitness with the goal of loving yourself and taking care of yourself, chances are you’re going to continue. Take some time to find your motivation, then do something physical. And I’d love to hear what gets you moving. Email me at hello@activate.ie.

After a year like no other, the team at Manor West Retail Park are determined to continue as much of their Christmas traditions right through the festive period. While the Christmas choirs and festive food and craft fairs might not be possible, one thing that was really important not to miss, is the opportunity to support a much loved local charity. Manor West Retail Park are delighted to announce that the Kerry branch of Enable Ireland is their Christmas charity partner for 2020, with funds raised as a result of donations to the Manor West’s Christmas crib going directly to the very worthy charity. Enable Ireland provides services to children and adults with disabilities and their families from over 40 locations in 15 counties. Covering childhood to adulthood, their teams work with the individual and their family on a plan for each life stage. Enable Ireland focuses on the person, not the disability. The organisation believes that access, inclusion and equality are basic rights for all people. “Manor West Retail Park are well-known for supporting local charities down the years, with extra special efforts made at Christmas time," Sean Scally, Regional Fundraising Manager at Enable Ireland, said. "Without the support of businesses like Manor West Retail Park and the public, none of what we do would be possible.

We are delighted to be Manor West’s Christmas charity partner and we hope that everyone will come and visit this beautiful crib and donate whatever they can. No matter what the donation, we are hugely grateful.” Speaking on the partnership between Manor West Retail Park and Enable Ireland this Christmas, Derek Rusk, Centre Manager added that “this year more than ever, supporting charities at Christmas time is so important". "After the challenging year they’ve had with cancelled events, we want to do whatever we can to show our support," he said. "Enable Ireland does such great work for individuals and families here in Kerry and we are very proud to partner with them. We are asking everyone who visits our crib to donate what they can to this worthy cause and all funds raised will go towards children and adults with physical, sensory and intellectual disabilities here in Kerry.” Visitors to Manor West Retail Park can support their charity partner, Enable Ireland at the Christmas crib which is located in the main shopping mall. From the Pulitzer Prize-winning author of 'A Thousand Acres' and the New York Times best-selling 'Last Hundred Years Trilogy', comes a captivating, brilliantly imaginative story of three extraordinary animals and a young boy whose lives intersect in Paris. 'Paras', short for Perestroika, is a spirited racehorse at a racetrack west of Paris. One afternoon at dusk, she finds the door of her stall open and as she's a curious filly - wanders all the way to the City of Light. Soon she meets an elegant dog, a German short-haired pointer named Frida, who knows how to get by without attracting the attention of suspicious Parisians. Paras and Frida coexist for a time in the city's lush green spaces, keeping company with two irrepressible ducks and an opinionated raven. But then Paras meets a human boy, Etienne, and discovers a new, otherworldly part of Paris: the ivy-walled house where the boy and his nearly-one-hundred-year-old

great-grandmother live in seclusion. As the cold weather and Christmas near, the unlikeliest of friendships bloom. But how long can a runaway horse stay undiscovered in Paris? Jane Smiley's beguiling new novel is itself an adventure that celebrates curiosity, ingenuity, and the desire of all creatures for true love and freedom.

Breakdancing named as official Olympic sport Breakdancing has been named as an official Olympic sport at the Paris Games in 2024.

ALL LIT UP: Santa took time out of his busy schedule to join little patient Michael Connors (7), outside CHI at Temple Street to officially switch on the Christmas lights. Photo: Andres Poveda

Temple Street lights up for Christmas Christmas may be different this year but Santa still took time out of his busy schedule to join little patient Michael (7), outside CHI at Temple Street to officially switch on the CHI at Temple Street Christmas lights and mark the beginning of the festive season. Santa showed great example by wearing his mask and social-distancing at this special switch-on. The thousands of sparkling lights on the façade of the beloved children’s hospital will help to keep the magic alive at Temple Street, especially for those patients spending time in the hospital this Christ-

mas. Families need a lift now more than ever and the hospital is doing its utmost to create a special atmosphere. Each year Children’s Health Foundation Temple Street’s charity partner Tesco Ireland and their staff support the Temple Street Light Up event by bringing lots of goodies and cheer to all in the hospital. Although the COVID-19 crisis does not allow for Santa to visit the wards this year, Tesco are continuing to support patients, families and staff by delivering joy to the hospital by donating over 200 goodie bags for patients and hampers for medical teams and wards. “Each year the lighting up of Temple

Street marks the start of the festive season, and whilst it is different this year, we want to continue to bring the spirit of Christmas to all those in the hospital," Denise Fitzgerald, Chief Executive of the Children’s Health Foundation at Temple Street said. "We would like to say a big thank you to our incredible fundraisers and supporters nationwide who have supported us throughout the year and in particular Tesco Ireland for their continued support, and for helping make Light Up happen. Thank you all so much.” Children’s Health Foundation Temple Street is the new name for Temple Street Foundation, and is part of the Children’s Health Foundation family. CMRF Crumlin and Temple Street Foundation officially came together at the beginning of January 2019 to become a single, unified family working to support sick children and their families in CHI. To support sick children in CHI at Temple Street this Christmas visit www.templestreet.ie/donate.

In a bid to lure a younger audience, the International Olympic Committee officially added it to the medal events programme. The decision was confirmed by the International Olympic Committee on Monday. Breakdancing will be referred to as 'breaking' when competitors take to the floor. Breakdancing proved a success at the 2018 Youth Olympics in Buenos Aires, Argentina, which was when it was proposed. When the games come to Paris, the dance-offs will take place at a downtown venue alongside sport climbing and 3v3 basketball. "It can resonate with a lot of people," Logan 'Logistx' Edra (17) said. "I think one thing for the breaking community is we want to make sure that it's not known as just a sport but an art, a sport, a culture."

So what happens on Monday? Next Monday the American Collegiate of Electors will cast their votes. It marks 37 days since the election and, so far, there is no hint that Donald Trump will concede to Joe Biden. But Monday’s announcement will make it next to near impossible for Trump to launch further legal challenges.

The number of electors from each State is proportional to the size of its population. California has the most electors, 55, sparsely populated States like Wyoming, Alaska and North Dakota have the minimum of three. Their votes must reach Washington DC by December 23 when and where counting begins. According to State tallies and media

outlets Biden has 306 to Trump’s 232 collegiate votes. It seems a dead certainty that the New Year will be very much a case of "out with the old and in with the new" - but don’t discount Trump just yet. He still claims he is going to win this election and until these votes are counted and ratified the race is not officially over yet. Watch this space!

Start your hybrid and electric journey at Bowlers Toyota The Toyota Corolla is Ireland’s best-selling car. In fact it is the best-selling car in the world and since 1966 when the first version left Japan close on 50 million Corollas are on the road worldwide. It really is a car for the ages and the latest model is certainly a car for the 21st century. For starters, it is only available in hybrid

form. The is significant. As the world moves away from petrol and diesel, motorists need a transition vehicle and that is why Brian Bowler of Bowlers Toyota Killarney is telling everyone to “Start your electric journey at Bowlers”. “The first point we need to get across is that hybrids do not need charging, they

are self-charging,” he told the Killarney Advertiser. “That eliminates all the stress associated with range-anxiety." Driving a new Hybrid Toyota really is the beginning of this new automotive journey that is gathering pace now. To help customers Bowlers Toyota have Michael O’Keeffe as their financial expert. Better known in Fossa GAA circles, Michael is the business manager at the

local Toyota dealership. “We can create tailor-made financial packages to suit everyone," added Brian. Current showroom stock includes the all-new Yaris, available in manual-petrol or automatic-hybrid. Looking ahead, the arrival of the 2021 Hilux is eagerly awaited and is expected in mid to late February.

Randles Bros' Nissan prepare for 100th anniversary Next year is going to be a big year for Randle’s Bros on the Muckross Road. The family firm will celebrate its 100th anniversary in 2021 and the local Nissan dealer is planning a host of special celebratory events. The garage business was founded by brothers Con and Thomas Randles, the grandfather and grand-uncle of current dealer principal David Randles. “It is going to be a very big year for us and all the team at Randles Bros are looking forward to it, we have loads of special offers throughout the whole year.” The offers start right now. The new Nissan Leaf offers unbeatable value for someone looking for an electric car. The cost of running an electric car far outweighs the cost of a conventional petrol or diesel car. “Maintenance costs, fuel costs, every-

thing drops dramatically with an electric car,” said David. “There is less to go wrong over a long period of time, starter motors, alternators, there is no need for these parts. Nissan Ireland, through Randles is offering unprecedented finance deals to get motorists behind the wheel of an electric car. A new Nissan Leaf costs in the region of €36,000. Subtract the Government’s €5,000 grant and a further €3,000 scrappage scheme offer and the cost of getting on the road proves even better value. “The Nissan Leaf is so good to drive, they are so much better than any mid-size car,” added David. “If you don’t believe me, ask anyone who has one.”

Four brands under one roof at Aherns Castleisland Ahern’s Garage Castleisland is a rarity in Kerry motoring as there is nowhere quite like it in Kerry. Under one roof motorists can sample the full range of four different brands. It’s like a shopping centre for cars, and while everything is accommodated in their vast Tralee Road complex, a visit there feels like you are stepping into four different garages. Car buyers won’t be short on space here.

Ahern’s is one of Ireland’s longest serving Opel dealers and the full range is on view there. A few short metres away sits their Mazda showroom, a highlight here is the brand new MX-30, Mazda’s first venture into electric cars. The newest addition to Ahern’s expanding range is SEAT as the family firm were appointed the Kerry dealership last year. Details of Ahern's BMW are on page 58.

56 County Kerry has become a breeding ground for talented motorsport engineers if recent success is anything to go by. From the pinnacle of Formula One Grand Prix racing to the FIA-approved World Rally Championship and, of course, the World Rally Championship, Kerry is influencing the world. Last Sunday’s Sakhir Grand Prix at the Bahrain International Circuit was one of the most exciting and entertaining Grand Prixs in a long, long time. Mexican driver Sergio Perez driving for the BWT Racing Point F1 Team driver won his first ever Grand Prix after recovering from a first lap incident that placed him 18th and last. His team mate Lance Stroll finished third to record the first double podium for the team that morphed out of the Jordan F1 team of the early 1990s. In fact, the current team, and after several owner and name changes, still operates out of the factory founded by Eddie Jordan all those years ago. There is a Kerry engineer on the squad. Sósanna Ní Dhubháin is the Senior Composite Designer engineer with the Silverstone-based team and she can trace her roots to Smerwick Harbour in West Kerry. She often spends her summer holidays back West, where he father Tomas fishes for lobster, and her brothers, accomplished musicians, are often found busking on the streets of Dingle.

Kerry’s contribution to global motorsport engineering

WEST KERRY: Sósanna Ní Dhubháin works as a designer with the BWT Racing Point F1 team.

“Wow what a race, never thought this day would come,” she said. “I can now say I'm a race-winning designer. What a car. Great work from everyone on the team, all the hard work and effort paid off,” she said on Sunday night after the race. There is no doubt that an entire parish of West Kerry will be watching Sunday’s Abu Dhabi Grand Prix, the final round of the 2020 campaign. Meanwhile in the world of Rallycross, Firies native Richard Browne is facing an uncertain future after his employers, Volkswagen, announced last week that it

WOLRD WINNER: Richard Browne is a three-time FIA World Rallycross champion with his driver Johan Kristoffersson.

was to cease all motorsport activity from the end of the year. It was a bitter blow to the Hanover-based Browne who, only days earlier, celebrated winning the FIA World Rallycross title with his driver Johann Kristofferson. It was the third time that the Swedish/ Irish combination had lifted the biggest prize in rallycross. However, all is not lost, and the German manufacturer has said that all staff would be re-deployed into other areas of the group’s automotive interests. Two possibilities remain for Browne, an electric road car programme in Wolfsburg or a chance to join Audi’s 24 Hours of Le Mans programme which was also announced last week. “Yes, bit of a shock, but they secured everyone's jobs by absorbing them into the group, probably in Wolfsburg,” said Browne. “We have to figure out if we can swap directly to Audi or Porsche, but

we may have to first move into the main group.” Whatever happens, the Firies man can hold his head high. Aside for his success in Rallycross, Browne is also a double World Rally Championship round winner having engineered Norwegian Andreas Mikkelsen’s three wins at world-level, Spain 2015 and Poland and Australia in 2016 while working for the Volkswagen Motorsport II team. “We had a good run, and did some amazing things,” added Browne. There were other reasons to celebrate local success in the World Rally Championship this season after Hyundai were declared the manufacturer world champions following last weekend's title decider in Monza, Italy. Craig Breen and Paul Nagle played a part in that success following their seventh place in Sweden in February and their historic second place on Rally Estonia in September.

How BMW mechanics adapt to electric cars Petrol and diesel cars will be around for a long-time yet - but just like the car-buying public - mechanics need to get up to speed on the new technology too. Spark plugs and clutch changes will eventually become a thing of the past, just like the electronic ignition replaced the old distributer and points system of the cars’ of the 1970s and 1980s. Ahern’s BMW in Castleisland is already ahead of the game in this respect. They have sent their technicians to BMW’s UK’s headquarters in Farnborough where they have achieved Level 4 – the highest available in Europe. For BMW mechanic Peter Coffey, he has noticed a change in his working life in the service bays of Ahern’s BMW. “For the customer the first change they will notice is the longer intervals between routine maintenance,” he told the Killarney Advertiser.

ADVANCEMENTS

In-car technology is getting so advanced now, even the car will automatically remind drivers of the next time they need to visit the workshop – not just for emergency repairs but the routine maintenance jobs too. “Drivers are able to go in to the onboard

computer on the dashboard and see how many kilometres are left on their brake pads,” explained Peter. The car’s breaking system offers another glimpse of the future, and while mainly providing a stopping mechanism for the car it is also providing regenerative energy for the electric motor. Acting like a exhaust brake, usually fitted to trucks, the breaking system in electric cars is more like a retarder system. “When a driver comes into a junction and lifts off the accelerator, it feels like the car is being slowed by itself – like something is grabbing the wheels,” added Peter. “Brakes will only need to be used for emergency stopping and not to slow down the car.” Good news for the customers as brake pads will have a longer life as a result of this system. Planning ahead is all part of ethos at Ahern’s BMW, dealer principal Paul Ahern admits that petrol - and diesel-engine cars will be around for a long-time yet – especially in rural areas like Kerry. “Electric cars will account for 20, maybe 30 percent of sales,” Paul told the Killarney Advertiser. “We have our staff trained to the highest level in Europe, we must be ready for this change.”

ON A CHARGE: Mechanic Peter Coffey and Service Manager Tony Casey of Ahern’s BMW. Both are trained in electric vehicles to the highest standards in Europe.

The Killarney connection to Kerry’s best-selling car So far this year, up to the end of November, 111 versions of the Hyundai Tucson SUV have hit Kerry roads. And now with a newer version of the Tucson recently arrived at Adam’s of Tralee, even further success is expected. The dealership is celebrating its 21st anniversary this year but a large proportion of the garages success can be put down to Killarney men. Four of the staff hail from town. These include mechanic Jason O’Connor, service adviser Oisin Shannon and his brother Liam who is

one of the garage’s salesmen. General Manager Marcus O’Shea is from Aghadoe. “Adam’s of Tralee is in the top five Hyundai dealers in the country,” Marcus told the Killarney Advertiser. “Our customer service is one of the main reasons behind that – if you become an Adam’s customer, you tend to stay.” Examples of their customer support include traditional services like collecting and returning cars to customers when an annual check-up is due but it goes beyond that. “If a customer was moving house we would give them a van,” he added. Despite being 30kms away from Killarney, Adam’s of Tralee enjoys great support locally, helped of course by the four staff members who are based near Killarney but also because of the range of products and services on offer. “Many of the hotels in Killarney have bought electric cars from us,” added the Aghadoe man. “It is important for them – these days when people are checking out a hotel they ask what is the pool like, where is the bar and is there an electric charge point on site? It helps the hotels to say they have an electric car on site."

FLYING THE FLAG: Paul Nagle and Craig Breen confirmed for Hyundai WRC 2021

Breen and Nagle confirmed for Hyundai 2021 WRC season Craig Breen and Paul Nagle have secured their seat with the Hyundai Motorsport World Rally Team for a third season. They will share the team’s third car with Spanish driver Dani Sordo as it bids to defend its recently secured second manufacturers’ title crown. The Germany-based team confirmed on Wednesday that they will field three cars next season, one each for regular drivers Ott Tänak and Thierry Neuville. Sordo and Breen will share the third car

Study undertaken on medieval hand-bells Early Medieval Hand-Bells of Ireland and Britain, the first in a new National Museum of Ireland publication series, has been launched.

LOTS TO SPROUT ABOUT: Pictured at his farm in Ballygarron, Tralee is brussels sprouts grower Paudie Hanafin, one of the growers supplying 135 tonnes of brussels sprouts this festive season to SuperValu. Photo: Valerie O’Sullivan

SuperValu set to sell nearly 2,000 tonnes of Irish veg this Christmas SuperValu has announced that it expects to sell almost 2,000 tonnes of locally sourced vegetables over the festive period, amid surging demand for vegetarian and vegan Irish Christmas dinner essentials such as brussels sprouts, carrots, parsnips and potatoes. SuperValu expects an increased interest in Irish food this Christmas, with shoppers keen to support local producers and suppliers. This support for local, coupled with a spike in demand for vegetarian and vegan alternatives, means that SuperValu expects that it will sell just under 1,900 tonnes of Irish vegetables alone over the festive period – the same weight as 20 NASA space shuttles combined. Local growers and suppliers are working hard to ensure families have all the fresh

vegetables they need this festive season. The brussels sprout, Ireland’s perennial dinner-table festive favourite, is centre stage this festive season, with consumer demand reflected by the fact that SuperValu expects to sell 135 tonnes of brussels sprouts, supplied by Tralee grower Paudie Hanafin. “Supporting local is in our DNA as we source from Irish suppliers wherever possible and we expect increased interest from shoppers in buying the very best in quality Irish food this Christmas," Ray Kelly, Interim Managing Director, SuperValu, said. "We are very fortunate to have long-standing partnerships with a range of Irish companies, which allows our customers to put the best of local and Irish on the table for their Christmas dinners. So when you make your Christmas dinner list, make sure that buying Irish is you.”

The book, 'The Early Medieval Hand-Bells of Ireland and Britain' by author Cormac Bourke, brings together for the first time all the hand-bells that exist or are known to have existed in Ireland and Britain into an exhaustive catalogue that will enthrall expert and amateur alike. Over 700 pages in extent, the publication catalogues some 300 ecclesiastical hand-bells from Ireland and Britain, including lost bells and six bells of insular type from Brittany and Bavaria. The author of the book Cormac Bourke is from Dublin and was a curator of Medieval Antiquities at the Ulster Museum in Belfast for 26 years. He specialises in the study of early insular Christianity and has published widely on medieval metalwork and on the archaeology of saints and their relics. Hand-bells are the most numerous and most widely distributed metal artefacts of ecclesiastical character that survive from the early Middle Ages in Ireland and Britain. These iconic examples of insular metalworking are emblematic of early Christianity in Ireland, Scotland and Wales. Produced between the fifth and 12th centuries, they survive in large numbers and were used originally to regulate monastic time and to punctuate the liturgy. Several are attributed to specific saints including Patrick and Columba

(Colum Cille) in Ireland, Kentigern (Mungo) in Scotland and David in Wales. "Bells include the oldest continuously transmitted objects that we possess," Cormac said. "Between 45 and 60 generations have had a custodian role in the transmission of our oldest bells. That process of being guarded and handed down, that cause, is of course continuous, and now largely a professional remit. I hope that this book, a statement of account in 2020, will contribute to its perpetuation." Priced at €50, Early Medieval Hand-Bells of Ireland and Britain is available from bookshops nationwide or online at www. wordwellbooks.com.

Tour de Munster charity cycle raises €340k The charity cycle Tour de Munster which raises vital funds for the Munster branches of Down Syndrome Ireland (DSI) and individual beneficiaries has raised an incredible €340,000 following its 600km tour across the six counties of Munster in August. The tour, which celebrated 20 years in August, has raised over €3.4 million for charity since 2001, with over €3 million raised for the Munster branches of Down Syndrome Ireland. 2020 marked the 11th year that Down Syndrome Ireland’s Mun-

ster Branches have been the main beneficiary of the popular charity cycle, where participants also have the option of choosing their own beneficiary for whom they will raise funds and awareness. The Munster branches of Down Syndrome Ireland play a vital role in the lives of children and adults with Down Syndrome. Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the branches saw the majority of their vital fundraising events cancelled which they rely so heavily on. Taking place over four days from August 6 to 9, Paul Sheridan, founder of the Tour de Munster and cycling legend Seán Kel-

with new and additional safety measures to protect all those involved," Paul Sheridan, founder of the Tour de Munster said. "Participants were driven more than ever to raise much needed funds and awareness for some fantastic charities, especially DSI’s Munster branches whose members turned out in force to cheer participants in every county."

GARDEN MAGIC

Gardening - By Debby Looney

Debby is available for advice and garden consultations, just call 086 6088156 or email barnhillky@gmail.com

Oh Christmas tree - how lovely are your branches! I absolutely love my Christmas tree – everything about it fills me with a festive spirit: choosing it, dragging it home, trying to get it to balance in the stand, decorating it and smelling it. I am of course talking about a real tree! However, this year we have decided last year was our final cut tree. There is an ongoing controversy about the sustainability and eco friendliness of real Christmas trees, not something I want to lecture anyone on, but something I think many of us are simply unaware of. Christmas tree farms are vast areas of the same crop, which is never ideal for wildlife diversity. Some farms will spray their trees using pesticides to keep them disease free, some using herbicides to keep weeds down, and some using hormones to prevent the tree from growing too fast - and so keeping it nice and dense and shapely. Let me just mitigate this by saying that not all farmers use these products, and many farms are managed with great care for the environment. However, personally, I love trees, and last year when shredding my tree, I wondered what I was doing! So, with that in mind, I will be using a live tree from now on, and will share some options with you.

NO PRUNING

The obvious choice is Picea glauca, a lovely slow growing miniature tree, which keeps its cone shape without the need for pruning, and can be kept in a pot for years. They are becoming very popular, and are seen for sale in many supermarkets and garden centres – some even pre-decorated in a red pot! We have had one for about five years now, and it is taking two of us to carry him in – finally we can put him on the floor rather than the table. We will have this tree another 10 years at least, and then he may retire in the garden.

SLOW GROWING

Picea pungens hoopsii, or the Colorado blue spruce, is another ideal candidate. Slow growing with beautiful blue foliage, it is a beauty. Eventually it will grow to 1.8m, but this will take some time - so provided you feed it regularly, it will be happy in a large pot for years. Alternatively, it is an ideal permanent tree in a small garden. Abies koreana, the Korean fir, is a well known centrepiece, however, it is also ideal for growing in a pot. In spring it develops good sized purple upright cones, and year round has a dark, bluey green foliage. As a young plant it can sometimes take a while for it to find its shape, but it always comes right! If you are growing a tree in a pot, remember to keep it moist at all times – conifers rarely recover from drying out completely. I dig a hole in the vegetable garden and sink my pot into it each year. That way it does not dry out too quickly, and rain water gets into it better, somehow. Also, I see it often and remember to water it. Another reason I sink it into the soil is so that it does not fall over – ensuring even growth and a nice shape. Alternatively, if your garden is a larger one, why not plan ahead by planting a few trees, and then, each year, as you cut your own grown Christmas tree, it can be replaced with a new plant? The most commonly used tree is the Fraser fir, as it keeps a good shape and is non shedding when cut. Picea omorika, or the Serbian spruce is also suitable; it is a tall thin tree, which is suited to a smaller room.

SPECIAL BROADCAST: 'O Holy Night' will be broadcast this Christmas Eve online. Pictured were: Toni Sands, Gemma Musgrave, Catherine O'Shea, and Gavan Ring.

Choir to broadcast uplifting performance this Christmas Eve In association with Creative Ireland Kerry/Kerry County Arts and Radio Kerry, Dr Gavan Ring – Cahersiveen’s own international tenor – is bringing the people of South Kerry and further afield together for a special Christmas Eve broadcast of the most famous Christmas song of all time 'O Holy Night'. Accompanied by legendary Cahersiveen organist Barbara Gloinson, 'O Holy Night' will be sung by Gavan and a digital cross-community choir comprising principally of people from South Kerry and South Kerry diaspora. Gavan’s performance will not be live but will be pre-recorded from the historic acoustics of the Daniel O’Connell Memorial Church in Cahersiveen in early December and will then be broadcast into homes around the county at 6.25pm on Christmas Eve on Radio Kerry who will also carry a video of the performance on their Facebook page. A feat of significant technological undertaking, the digital choir will be made up of individual recordings of those involved singing the chorus of 'O Holy Night'. Working with renowned film production company The Reelists, choir members’ recordings and footage will then be expertly mixed together over the master track of Gavan and Barbara to create the effect of an authentic choral performance. “This project has a strong focus on cit-

izen well-being,” Kate Kennelly, Arts Officer and Creative Ireland Kerry coordinator in Kerry County Council said. “It will allow a coming together across many communities. There is healing power in music and song and we want people across Kerry to feel comfort and joy through this event.” As choirs and singers continue to be prohibited from gathering and singing together due to the ongoing impact of COVID-19, this project will imaginatively reconnect singers, choirs and the wider Kerry community using technology to bring some sense of normality back to their lives. So far, there are upwards of 50 singers from Iveragh and all across the globe involved in the project. “This is just incredible! We have people joining us from New York, California, Greece, all around the country and the county to digitally part-take in this project! I am so grateful to Kerry County Arts and Radio Kerry for making this a reality,” a delighted Gavan added. “'O Holy Night' is possibly the greatest Christmas song of all time and this special broadcast will not only give the singers involved a huge lift, but the whole county – and indeed the world – will be able to experience a truly magical and uplifting musical moment at a time when we will all be sorely missing the wonderful music-making we traditionally associate with Christmas Eve and in particular with midnight Mass.”

SIMPLY BEAUTIFUL DARE scheme supports

Beauty - By Jill O'Donoghue

Jill is available for advice and beauty consultations, at Killarney Toning & Beauty Studio. Call 064 6632966

Treat yourself to a lash lift This year's most popular treatment for Christmas is definitely lash lifting...... especially as there is no maintenance. It can be a one off treatment and last up to eight weeks. If you're thinking about something nice to treat yourself, I’d highly recommend the lash lifting treatment. A patch test is required and it takes about an hour but you'll feel so glamorous afterwards. Especially with the wearing of masks, our eyes really need to flutter and sparkle. It’s a semi-permanent treatment that aims to curl your lashes upwards so you can ditch the lash curler and false lashes. There is no damage to your natural lashes. The process which is painless and fairly quick includes a lash tinting service. It's best to arrive at your appointment with no eye make-up on. It’s all about enhancing your own lashes, even the shortest

of lashes can be curled and lifted. It’s like perming your lashes into a lifted cured state but unlike harsh products the lash lift is gentler. Luckily they are low maintenance which is another reason clients love this amazing alternative to extensions. Following the treatment there is a little aftercare to follow, such as not wetting the lashes for up to 24 hours, and combing through the lashes everyday with a clean lash brush. Avoid make-up remover, oils and shampoos. There is generally no need to wear mascara for the first few weeks, but towards the end when the lash lift is wearing off, I tend to use mascara. It goes on so well and helps lifts the lashes again. This year I highly recommend this treatment as it helps open the eyes up if you're tired or feel you need a pick me up this will help brighten the eye area and give you a feeling of pure joy.

students with disabilities

DARE (Disability Access Route to Education) is an admissions scheme for school leavers whose disabilities in a broad range of categories have had a negative impact on their second level education. The term ‘disability’ can be off-putting for students and parents with some people reluctant to apply for the DARE scheme, feeling that it might come against them in some way. That is of course understandable, but I cannot stress enough how beneficial the supports offered to students are in the journey into and through third level education. Thousands of students have applied for the scheme since its inception and have successfully navigated their way through college achieving academic, personal, social and career success by receiving the required supports from access staff in the various colleges. The recent RTÉ series ‘My Uni Life’ demonstrated just how accessible higher education can be for students with defined difficulties and disabilities once the appropriate supports are provided prior to entry and throughout the college journey. The DARE scheme is open to school leavers with a disability under the age of 23 as of January 1, 2021. Mature students and those applying from Further Education and Training (FET) courses have different admissions routes which can be explored on the college websites.

CATEGORIES

If you are unsure about whether you may be eligible or not it is advisable to check out the specific screening criteria for the categories of disability on www.accesscollege.ie which are as follows; Autistic Spectrum Disorder (including Asperger’s Syndrome), Attention Deficit Disorder (ADD & ADHD), Blind/Vision Impaired, Deaf/Hard of Hearing, DCD – Dyspraxia, Mental Health Condition, Neurological Condition, Speech and Language Communications Disorder, Significant Ongoing Illness, Physical Disability, Specific Learning Difficulty.

DEADLINES AND APPLICATION PROCESS

The first step is to apply to the CAO which is now open online by February 1, 2021. DARE applicants must fill in the Supplementary Information Form (SIF) Section A which looks for information on your disability, the support you received in second level and how the disability impacted on your education. This must be completed by March 1. Question one asks you if you wish to be considered for DARE to which you must answer yes and click the Submit Button. You will also be required to add in a brief personal statement about your experience of being in school and the challenges you faced. The purpose of this is to help the college to deter-

mine what supports you need. Section B is the Educational Impact Statement (EIS) and must be completed by your school. Section C is the Evidence of Disability and it must be completed by the appropriate medical professional only if you do not have a report verifying your disability that meets the DARE criteria. The forms for sections B and C can be downloaded from www.accesscollege.ie or www.cao. ie and you must send them to reach CAO by March 15. All deadlines are strict and non-negotiable so make sure you meet them well in advance of the actual dates to avoid unnecessary stress.

BENEFITS

Eligible students may be offered a place on courses even if you don’t have the required points but still need to meet minimum entry requirements and specific course requirements. Priority is given to students who are eligible for both HEAR and DARE. Once registered on a course as a DARE student the supports may include the following – orientation programmes, learning support, assistive technology, library support, exam accommodations, educational support worker and academic tuition. The provision of such supports seeks to level the playing pitch for entry to and access through higher education by widening opportunities for students who have a significant challenge in terms of their participation, experience and learning in secondary school. Application Information Events take place on DARE every year to provide students and/or parents/guardians with the opportunity to meet online with a member of the DARE team to discuss the application process and this year the national event will take place on Saturday, January 9 from 10am-2pm. For further details on information events and on the DARE scheme itself as well as contact details DARE support staff in the various colleges see www.accesscollege.ie.

RECENTLY SALE AGREED. THINKING OF SELLING IN 2021? FREE SALES VALUATIONS

PSL: 001388 PSL: 001388

Create a focal point in your living room This week's DNG tips for preparing your home for sale lead us to the living room; the room we relax and entertain in, the room where we sell a lifestyle. Great effort should be given to help buyers visualise the comfortable impressive lifestyle on offer in your home. A thoughtful layout and deliberate design choices will help to secure a quicker sale at a premium price. Begin with a good old fashioned clear out. Pack away everything that is unessential to the function of the space including children toys, magazines, trophy collections and souvenirs.

NEUTRALISE THE WALLS

Rich bold colours and heavily patterned wallpaper tend to make rooms feel smaller. Stick to neutral tones to improve your saleability.

FRESHEN UP THE ROOM

The living room carpet should be sham-

pooed or professionally cleaned. In cases where it has taken a real battering consider replacing it.

FURNITURE

Your choice of furniture will influence buyers’ impressions of your property. Don’t cram in as much furniture as you can. A living room simply requires a cof-

fee table, two side tables and a carefully selected suite of furniture. Any more is cluttering up the space. Consider steam cleaning your upholstered furniture or cover with a neutral-coloured throw. If your furniture is too big for the space it makes your room seem smaller. Space is more important than comfort, remember you are not selling the oversized armchair! To maximise the feeling of space consider changing any heavy dark curtains for modern slatted blinds, Roman blinds or light neutral-coloured curtains. Do not allow the TV dominate the room. Move the furniture around so not everything faces the television. Rearrange your sofa so they face each other across the coffee table. If space is at a premium consider an ‘L’ shape formation.

FOCAL POINT

This now allows you to create a new focal point in the room. Perhaps it’s the feature open fireplace or stove or that

view of the gardens. Allow these features to speak for themselves, don’t close the curtains on a great view and don’t clutter the mantlepiece over a handsome open fireplace. Add some fresh flowers in an elegant vase, an engaging piece of artwork or a well-placed mirror. A living room should encourage conversation, reading and relaxing. Personality can be added by replacing any outdated lampshades with lighter more contemporary ones. Add some more colour with cushions, throws, a rug, artwork and flowers.

CREATE A MOOD

Finally create the right mood lighting. Table lamps create a softer mood, spot lighting highlights objects and artwork. Perhaps create a quiet reading corner by adding directional task lighting next to a chair. The living room is a lifestyle room, show buyers something to aspire to.

Ways to kick start your investing career "The biggest risk of all is not taking one" - Mellody Hobson CRIPPLING INDECISION

They say the price of inaction is far greater than the cost of making a mistake. This is especially true for so many investors. People who are paralysed by indecisions or the fear of making a mistake subsequently do nothing and miss out on a multitude of opportunities in the process. This is a very understandable but albeit irrational fear. Statistically speaking, the broad equity market has continued to reach higher and higher valuations since inception, so the probability of success rests firmly in the investor's favour. On average, the stock market has returned around 10% annually since 1974 (without factoring in inflation). A far more enticing return than the pennies on offer in your savings account.

How many millionaires do you know who have become wealthy by investing in savings accounts? You don't need to make a huge decision regarding your life-savings all at once. Start small - but start now. After that first step, it all gets a little easier.

EMERGENCY FUNDS You may have gathered from the above that I am a bit of an investing enthusiast, and I believe everyone should have some exposure to the stock market. Of course, risk and volatility are ever-present, but thankfully, we can take steps to mitigate these risks. One such step is to set up an emergency fund. Far too often, novice investors throw all their savings into stocks thinking they can sell them off whenever they

need the money back. This isn’t a bank account. If you need the money in the middle of a downturn, you may have to sell at a loss. Emergency funds create a financial buffer that can keep you afloat in times of financial strain, preventing you from dipping into your portfolio at the least opportune time. The need for an emergency fund should not be overlooked. It is a hugely important factor, providing you with the freedom to invest in the market long-term, without interruption. The size of your emergency fund will depend on your financial circumstances, but a good rule of thumb is to try and gather between three to six months of living expenses. If you have a mortgage, kids etc., you may want to be on the higher end of this. If you have few overheads and strong job security,

Michael O’Connor CFA is an investment consultant based in the Cayman Islands with a decade of experience within the financial industry.

then three months may work for you. All of your emergency funds don’t necessarily need to sit in cash. The majority of this can sit in a money market fund. These funds are intended to offer investors high liquidity with a very low level of risk; unfortunately, they offer low returns to match.

Weather advice and winter home safety tips As winter is upon us here are some tips to help you prepare and protect your home and property. FREEZING TEMPERATURE PREVENTION TIPS

John Healy of Healy Insurances.

Check there are no cracks in any bricks, slates or tiles as water can get into them, freeze, expand and cause more damage. All parts of a fixed water system, such as boilers, radiator stop valves, taps and all piping should be inspected by a qualified plumber at least once a year and before the winter months. Apply insulating lagging to pipes particularly in cold areas like the attic, outbuildings or where pipes are external.

Water tanks and cisterns should also be fitted with adequate lagging insulation. Please ensure that insulation is on top of roof piping, not under, to benefit from heating coming from below. Leaving the attic door open while the heating is on will allow warm air to reach pipes high up in the attic and prevent them from freezing. Know where your stop valve is so that if you do have a leak you can turn off the water. If you are away from home during the winter set the heating to come on when the temperature drops below a certain point to prevent freezing. The coldest time is between 1am and 3am. If your home is to be unoccupied for an extended period, inform your insurers and drain the water system so that freezing of pipes cannot occur.

STORM DAMAGE PREVENTION TIPS

Ensure that items in the garden are placed indoors or tied down, particularly barbecues and trampolines. Check that drain pipes and gutters are properly fixed in place and free from clutter which could become hazardous debris in a storm. Ensure that slipped or cracked slates and tiles are fixed. Look out for cracked or loose cement around ridge tiles or chimneys. Check on roof coverings regularly and replace when they show signs of deterioration. Finally it is recommended to make sure the whole family know what to do if you have a burst pipe or storm damage. Please check on the well-being of elderly neighbours and ask a friend or relation to check your house on a daily basis if you are away during the winter months.

First time buyer incentives A report issued this week by the Banking & Payments Federation has revealed that Irish housing supply is unlikely to reach demand until the end of 2023 at the earliest. This shortage of supply makes it very difficult for many first-time buyers to get on the property ladder. While such reports are often more relevant in Dublin, Cork and other cities, this report certainly seems to have relevance across the country. Successive Governments have tried to assist first-

time buyers with various incentives. Among the incentives available are:

BORROWING LIMITS First-time buyers, living and purchasing in Ireland, may borrow up to 90% of the purchase price whereas next-time buyers are limited to 80%.

HELP-TO-BUY INCENTIVE

The Help-to-Buy Scheme is an incentive available to first time buyers, subject to certain conditions. The terms of the scheme were temporarily enhanced earlier this year and will be reviewed on or before December 31, 2021. The principal conditions are as follows: The applicant(s) must be purchasing a new property or building themselves. The amount sanctioned will be the lesser of: 10% of the purchase price (or value, for self-builds). The total income tax paid and DIRT paid by the applicant(s) in the previous four tax years. The maximum amount payable of €30,000. The applicant(s) must be getting a mortgage of at least 70% of the purchase price/value. For example, purchase for €300,000 – must be getting a mortgage of €210,000 or higher. The seller of the property must be a qualifying contractor who has registered with the Revenue and proven themselves to be tax compliant.

REBUILDING IRELAND

A Rebuilding Ireland Home Loan is a Government backed mortgage for firsttime buyers, available through Local Authorities. These mortgages can be used in the purchase of new or second-hand properties or for self-builds. Loans of up to 90% of the market value of the property are available at favourable rates and the Local Authorities are allowed to exceed the income multiple limits by which main stream lenders are bound, which can make this a very attractive option for some applicants. Applicants must be first-time buyers in continuous employment for at least two years, have income of not more than €50,000 for single applicants or a combined €75,000 for joint applicants, have been refused by at least two lenders for finance, be buying a property costing no more than €250,000 (€320,000 in Dublin and other larger urban areas). If you are thinking of buying a property it is important to discuss your mortgage options with a mortgage broker who will help you through the process with informed advice along the way. If you have any questions on mortgages email them to killarney@mcguireliston. ie or sales@killarneyadvertiser.ie.

EFFICACIOUS NOVENA TO THE SACRED HEART OF JESUS O my Jesus, you have said, “Truly I say to you, ask and you shall receive, seek and you shall find, knock and it shall be opened to you,” Behold I knock, I seek and I ask for the grace of… Our Father, Hail Mary, Glory Be to the Father, Sacred Heart of Jesus, I put all my trust in Thee. O my Jesus, You said, “Truly I say to you, whatsoever you shall ask the Father in My name, He will give it to you.” Behold, in your name, I ask the Father for the grace of… Our Father, Hail Mary, Glory Be to the Father, Sacred Heart of Jesus, I put all my trust in Thee. O Sacred Heart of Jesus, to whom one thing alone is impossible, namely, not to have compassion on the afflicted, have pity on us miserable sinners and grant us the grace which we ask of Thee through the Sorrowful and Immaculate Heart of Mary, your and our tender Mother. Say the Hail, Holy Queen and add: St. Joseph, foster father of Jesus, pray for us. LYNE

HORGAN

In loving memory of Mai Lyne (nee Golden) late of Listry, Beaufort, Killarney and formally of Coolbane, Killorglin, who passed away peacefully at her home on Sunday December 8th 2019.

In loving memory of my dear father, John Horgan, late of St. Brendan’s Place, Killarney, who died on the 14th December, 1977.

In loving memory of Ted Moynihan late of Upper Lissivigeen, Killarney who died on the 16th December 2009.

Silent memories keep you near As time unfolds another year Out of our lives you may be gone But in our hearts you still live on.

To those who think of Ted today, A little prayer to Jesus say.

As we lovingly remember Mai on her first anniversary we her family wish to express our sincere thanks to all who sympathised with us through her final farewell. We express our deepest gratitude to all those who called to the house, attended the rosary, removal and funeral mass, sent mass cards, floral tributes and made phone calls. To all those who travelled long distances to be with us from the USA and the UK, it was a great support to us and will always be very much appreciated. Many thanks to Mai’s dearest sister Joan who prayed with her only hours before she passed away, and whose support and kindness was a great comfort to us. Sincere thanks to our extended family, neighbours and friends who were so kind to us and gave so graciously of their time over the course of the funeral. There are far too many of you to mention, but to all of you who provided food, home baking, made dinners, and helped out in the kitchen we offer a sincere thanks. Our deepest thanks to our public health nurses, Dr. Kerry Heuston and the staff of Farranfore Medical Centre for the care Mai received over her long life. A special thanks to Fr. Kevin O’Sullivan who officiated at Mai’s funeral mass in such a personal way. To Canon Larry Kelly who called to the house to say the rosary with us. It meant so much to us and was very much appreciated. A heartfelt thanks to our sacristan Eamonn Donnelly, Marie and the beautiful Listry Choir who made the mass so meaningful. A sincere thanks to Flynns undertakers Castlemaine for their kindness and professional guidance in the handling of the funeral arrangements. To Sean and Aoife O’Mahony and the staff of Killarney Country Club who provided the meal after the funeral, thank you. As it would not be possible to thank everyone individually we offer this acknowledgement as an expression of our deepest appreciation and gratitude to all. The holy sacrifice of the mass has been offered for your intentions. God Looked around his garden and saw an empty space, He then looked down upon the earth and saw your tired face. He put his arm around you and raised you up to rest. His garden must be beautiful because he only takes the best. So he closed your weary eyelids and whispered ‘come to me’ With tearful eyes we watched you and saw you slip away, And though we loved you dearly, we knew you could not stay. It broke our hearts to lose you, but you did not go alone, For part of us went with you on the day God called you home. Always remembered by your loving daughter Mary, son Tom, son-in-law Mike and daughterin-law Monica xx On a quiet December evening, You heard the angels call, You took the hand of Jesus, And quietly left us all. In a world full of people, We sometimes feel alone, For part of us went with you, The day God called you home. Sadly missed and remembered with love by your grandchildren Shona, Daragh, Aoife, Christopher and Alanna and great grandchildren Sophia and Caleb.xx

No words we write can ever say, How much we miss you every day, No one knows the grief we bear, When the family gather and you’re not there.

Just close your eyes and you will see All the memories that you have of me Just sit and relax and you will find I’m really still inside your mind. Don’t think of me in the dark and cold For here I am, no longer old There is no pain, there is no fear So dry away that silent tear. I’m in that place that’s filled with love Known to you all, as “up above.”

God saw you getting tired And a cure was not to be So he put His arms around you And whispered “Come to me.” With tearful eyes we watched you, And saw you pass away; Although we loved you dearly, We could not make you stay. A heart full of gold stopped beating Hard-working hands at rest, God broke our hearts to prove to us He only takes the best. MARY MALONE’S PRAYER FOR HEALING Heavenly Father, I call on you right now in a special way. It is through your power that I was created. Every breath I take, every morning I wake, and every moment of every hour, I live under your power. Father, I ask you now to touch me with that same power. For if you created me from nothing you can certainly re-create me. Fill me with the healing power of your spirit. Cast out anything that should not be in me. Mend what is broken. Root out any damaged cells. Open any blocked arteries or veins and rebuild any damaged cells. Remove all inflammation and cleanse any infection. Let the warmth of your healing love pass through my body to make new any unhealthy areas so that my body will function the way you created it to function. And Father, restore me to full health in mind and body so that I may serve you the rest of my life. I ask this through Christ Our Lord. Amen GOS

Crokes man on the Kerry hurling panel

| By Adam Moynihan

| By Sean Moriarty

Joe McDonagh Cup All-Ireland B Hurling Final Preview It is All-Ireland final day. The Green and Gold of Kerry takes to the hallowed pitch of Croke Park. Among the squad of players is a Dr Crokes man. So far, all of this seems normal enough, but we are far from normal times. It is not the Kerry footballers who are contesting a final. Instead, the Kerry hurlers remain our only hope for All-Ireland glory this season. They will contest Sunday’s Joe McDonagh Cup final, a competition for second tier hurling counties, against Antrim. It could be the perfect chance to put hurling in Kerry in the limelight, so often the poorer cousin of the big ball and dominated by North Kerry-based clubs. If this was a football final, Killarney-based players on the Kerry team would be a certainty. Even narrowing that down to just one local club, Dr Crokes, locals would have more than one reason to get excited about Sunday’s game. The last

time Kerry won the Sam Maguire Cup the winning captain was Fionn Fitzgerald who plays his club football with the Black and Amber. There is no denying the influence of Colm ‘Gooch’ Cooper during the early years of this century and in more recent times Gavin White has been an inspired talisman for the Kingdom. Both are members of the Dr Crokes Club in Killarney. But, unfortunately, the Kerry football team did not make the cut this year and instead it is up to our county hurlers to fly the Green and Gold flag at Croke Park on Sunday. And there will be one Dr Crokes player on the panel. Michael Lenihan got the call up to the Kerry panel after Dr Crokes won the County Intermediate final in September after defeating Tralee Parnells.

The road to the final Kerry and Antrim are certainly no strangers to one another. In addition to their recent Joe McDonagh Cup qualifier meeting, which the Ulstermen won by seven points, the two sides also met in the National League Division 2A final on October 18. Antrim emerged victorious that day as well with three points to spare. Kerry have another score to settle with Antrim too, having lost to them by six points in the regular season, before lockdown, on March 1. The B final will be played in Croke Park as a curtain-raiser to the All-Ireland senior hurling final to be played between Waterford and Limerick. It will be broadcast live on RTÉ’s Sunday Game at 1pm. If Kerry go on to win the final, they will have a playoff match in 2021 against the lowest ranked team in Munster with the victors earning a spot in the Munster Championship proper.

“Michael was only called into the Kerry Senior Hurling training panel after we won the County Intermediate Hurling Final in late September,” his father John, who is the Dr Crokes hurling manager, told the Killarney Advertiser. “Michael was playing full-forward on the Crokes team and was our top scorer for the second consecutive year.” He is the youngest member of the panel, the team announcement is not due to be made until later tonight (Friday), but John admits his son is unlikely to make the starting 15. The 19-year-old is just one of a panel of 37 players on the squad but thanks to a recent easing of restrictions all members of the panel will be allowed attend the match on Sunday. “There have not been too many trial games and he has no chance to impress the selectors,” added John. Hurling in Kerry is dominated by North Kerry clubs. Draw a triangle on map between Tralee, Ballyheigue and Kilflynn and that is the catchment area where

every county champion since Kilgarvan’s victory in 1958 has come from. It is very difficult, some would say impossible for any player outside this area to make to make it to county panel, never mind the first 15. But young Lenihan comes with pedigree. He and his club colleague, Tom Doyle (18) were both members of the Kerry U20 hurling team this year, the same team that won an All-Ireland B U20 Hurling medal in 2019. He is a dual player, a rarity in County Kerry, and has played full-forward with the five-in-a-row All-Ireland winning Minor Football team in 2018. Earlier this year he captained the St. Brendan's College football team that won the O’Sullivan Cup. He was also a member of the Kerry U14 soccer team that won the Kennedy Cup in 2015, but now only plays hurling and football. He is currently training to be a teacher at DCU in Dublin.

CROKE STAR: Michael Lenihan of Dr Crokes is the only Killarney player on the Kerry panel for Sunday’s Joe McDonagh Cup All-Ireland B final.

Farranfore’s St Stephen’s Day 5k goes virtual The Farranfore 5k Road Race is one of the oldest road races in the country. Run every year, on St Stephen’s Day, since 1961, it is also a traditional part of the Christmas celebrations in the locality. However, the event, raced between Farranfore to Firies and back, cannot go head this year as a result of the pandemic. Instead, organiser, Farranfore Maine Valley AC, are moving the event online. “Health and safety is top priority and it is too soon to have a mass participation event. We eagerly await the time when we can have road races again but until then we hope that you can help us in our fundraiser and promotion of athletics in Kerry,” a club statement said. Participants are being invited to place an entry via myrunresults.com and can run

their own individual race anytime between Thursday 24 and Tuesday 29. Once completed, participants can upload their result to the same website. “Farranfore St. Stephen's Day 5k is the main fundraiser for our athletic club, with the proceeds used for promoting athletics in the community. We will also be funding the long-awaited development of the Firies National School All Weather Sportsground,” added the statement. “Participants can support the race and run in their own localities. It will have distances of 2km and 5km to help encourage runners and families of all ages to participate.” Early entrants will be sent a souvenir t-shirt and participants are encouraged to enter early to ensure the t-shirt is delivered before Christmas.

ELITE: Indiana-based Valerie Clancy has been named as one of the top 15 rising golf stars in the country.

Killarney golfer makes national cut

POPULAR: The Farranfore 5k is always a popular festive event but it has been forced to go online this year.

A Killarney golfer has been named as one of 15 high performance athletes by Golf Ireland and is in line for funding to help her progress her career.

The blitz of Christmas past

Valerie Clancy from Fossa is the only Kerry golfer on the 15-strong list and has been a member of Killarney Golf and Fishing Club since she was 12-years-old. Valerie (20), is currently based at the University of Indiana where she plays college golf with the university’s ladies team. Forming part of the Golf Ireland player pathway, the funded programme aims to assist players in gaining international experience, helping them to develop their skills towards improved tournament performance. “Providing financial assistance that supports players’ participation in international amateur events is a key objective of the programme. It provides the opportunity to support players as they strive to balance competing internationally with commitments outside of the sport, such as careers and education. Players are empowered to become self-sufficient in the design and execution of their personal

Some months ago St. Mary’s Basketball Club were forced to announce that their annual Christmas blitz would not go ahead this year. It was, like many other events, a victim of COVID-19. The blitz should have been entering its 51st year and this news was a huge blow to all in the basketball community and the thousands of supporters who attended each year. On the weekend that should have been the launch of the 51st blitz programme, organisers have announced that they are currently working closely with Richard Nolan of Art Customized and can confirm that there will be a virtual blitz in 2020. “People were constantly saying how they would miss the event this year and that they would not know what to do with

performance plans,” Alan Kelly of Golf Ireland explained. Competition for places was even tighter this year following the amalgamation of the Irish Ladies Golf Union and the Golfing Union of Ireland as Golf Ireland. Valerie is currently at home in Fossa on an extended Christmas break – and is self-isolating - after the university moved all its teaching online until the New Year because of COVID-19 restrictions in the Mid-West State. “It will help my career as I can enter international tournaments and know that some or all of my expenses will be reimbursed. I could, possibly, enter a European tournament before I go back to Indiana in January,” she told the Killarney Advertiser. “I am very grateful, Golf Ireland has been very supportive and I am seen by them as a top player and an elite player on the same panel as men in Ireland.”

Good news for all basketball fans, there will be a blitz of sorts, for Castleisland and beyond this Christmas.

themselves in the days after Christmas, so it was only right to try and put something in place and we are fortunate to have the support of Garvey’s SuperValu to assist us in doing so,” said Liz Galwey club PRO. “We did have some old video tapes and CDs from the late ’90s and early '00s so it was decided to see what was still working and what we could put in place, a lot of people can’t make it home this year so it will be great for them also.” “The event is still in the planning but the hope is to have a mixture of games, from all age groups and all years on each of the five days after Christmas if possible. Not all years were available and the quality was no longer great in some but we have certainly managed to pull a considerable amount from what we have.” Full details of 'The Blitz of Christmas Past' will be available soon but for now it is safe to say that St. Mary’s will be putting on a Blitz this Christmas.

Kerry’s bid for All BALL Ireland hurling glory ON THE

Popular opinion this year stated that Kerry would be the only realistic team to stop the Dubs from winning the historic sixin-a-row. The Dubs are on target, but they should never have delivered on the magical five last year. Kerry gifted them the opportunity to do so. Kerry should have won the drawn 2019 All-Ireland and when Dublin were left off with a warning, they duly obliged and made no mistake in the replay. They are kingpins of the GAA and they deserve to be.

KERRY HURLERS

Kerry are back in Croke Park on Sunday next, but it is our hurlers that will focus our minds as they bid to win the Joe McDonagh Cup for the first time ever, when they meet Antrim in the curtain raiser to the senior All-Ireland hurling final. The Joe McDonagh Cup - what’s that, so many Kerry supporters will ask blinded by the great traditions of winning the Sam Maguire on so many occasions? This Cup is for counties in the second tier for the hurling championship, instituted

in memory of the late Joe McDonagh. More about Joe later. Kerry have shown this year that even though Sam will not be coming home the McDonagh Cup can fill the void.

FOUR TIMES

They face a stern test in Antrim and lessons learned by Kerry manager Fergal O’Connor can be put to good use in Croke Park. These two sides have already met four times this year and there isn’t much between them. The final will be a repeat of last month's Allianz League Division 2A decider which Antrim won by three points while the northerners also beat Kerry 3-18 to 2-14 in Round 3 of the McDonagh Cup. Kerry were very impressive last time out against Carlow in Tralee a few weeks ago, when they won 2-22 to 1-23.

They had to recover from a bad start, conceding a soft enough goal in the sixth minute. They also lost goalkeeper, Martin Stackpoole (who works in Liebherr) in the 14th minute with a serious hand injury. Sub-keeper J B O'Halloran did well when he came on. They upped their game, but Carlow kept that three-point lead between the sides until the vital score came in the 18th minute, when Daniel Collins scored a goal that put them ahead. The same player was in the right place to scoop the ball to the net for his second goal and a half-time lead of 1-12 to 1-10.

SECOND HALF

Would a two-point lead be enough for the second-half to win with wind advantage for Carlow? Kerry responded well, but it was touch and go and Carlow sneaked ahead by a point in the 65th minute. Kerry made it to the final with late points from Shane Conway (who else but sharpshooter Shane?), Shane

x

Nolan and two from Michael O'Leary. The latter scored three points in total. After the game Carlow manager Colm Bonner stepped down. He was a Tipp hurler, and is brother of Cormac, the former Tipperary All-Ireland winner and All Star. Cormac has been domiciled in Killarney for many years and finished his playing career hurling with Dr Crokes.

KEY MAN

Shane Conway is the key man on Sunday. A prolific scorer, from play and from frees, he scored eight points against Carlow and his usual tally goes into double figures. He has proved that with club, county and college. In the Fitzgibbon Cup played earlier this year the UCC student was named player of the tournament. If he adapts his frees in to the wide expanses of Croke Park, he can show the way. Look out too for full forward Mikey Boyle. He was outstanding against Carlow scoring four points.

ANTRIM FAVOURITES

Antrim will start as favourites, especially

SPORT

11.12.2020 after their league final win over Kerry. They started poorly against Meath in their semi-final of the McDonagh Cup, but took complete control winning 2-30 to 3-10. No less than 11 players scored in that win so the Kerry defence and midfielders must mark closely. Ciaran Clarke is the Shane Conway of Kerry. He scored 12 points against Meath, 10 of these from frees. Michael Bradley shot eight points in the same match, so he will need close watching.

LIMERICK TO WIN

For the McCarthy Cup I stay with Limerick as my prediction to win before a ball was pucked in this year’s championship. They are the on-form team, even if I thought they were below par in their narrow semi-final win over Galway, who lost ace marksman Joe Canning in the second half. They won the 2018 All-Ireland defeating Galway 3-16 to 2-18 in the final led by Declan Hannon. Waterford have to go all the way back to 1959 for their last All-Ireland, when Frankie Walsh raised the Cup after defeating Kilkenny 3-12 to 1-10, so popular support will be with the underdogs on Sunday. However, sentiment won’t put the sliotar over the bar. I was very impressed with Waterford in their semi-final win over Kilkenny, the big winners amassing 36 titles and they also lost 25 other AllIreland finals. Waterford showed great resolve to make a dramatic comeback, when it appeared that Kilkenny would romp home. It will be very special for Barry Moran, the only survivor from 2008, when they were well beaten by Kilkenny.

99

BARRY MORAN

Not that age will bother Moran the oldest man on the field on Sunday. Look at the brilliance of Kilkenny’s T J Reid (37) in the semi-final. From memory I think John Doyle (37) was the oldest man to play in an All-Ireland final. Waterford have great spirit and they will give it everything, but I still expect Limerick to win. Let’s hope the final will be as thrilling as so many of the other hurling games this year. As a matter of interest Kerry (Ballyduff) won their first and only hurling All-Ireland in 1891.

WHO WAS JOE MCDONAGH?

Joe won his one and only All-Ireland senior hurling medal as a non-playing sub in the 1980 All-Ireland final. That was the day Galway captain Joe Connolly made the wonderful speech in his first language, all as Gaeilge capturing the enthusiasm and traditions of the day. But that was not all, as Joe McDonagh gave an impromptu rendering of ‘The West’s Awake’, which complemented the excellence of the captain’s speech. No bother to singer Joe, wasn’t he steeped in the sean-nós traditions of his late uncle and family. Joe knew the significance of it being alive on a special way that day. He played in six Fitzgibbon Cups with UCG and won just one in 1977. He was also a great footballer playing in five Sigerson Cups and losing all of them. I don’t know anyone with such an amazing record playing with his college in two codes.

GRÁMHAR

I got to know him in later life and he was the kind of person you always wanted

Kerry marksman Mike Boyle with the coveted Joe McDonagh Cup at a promotional event at Ballinderreren GAA club, McDonagh's home club, last year.

to meet. Grámhar as usual, he exuded a broad smile and excelled as a conversationalist fluent in three languages Gaeilge, English and Welsh, a raconteur, a spinner of yarns and a party man who loved to sing. He loved playing for anyone, club, college or county, but the one he told me that gave him the greatest thrill came late in his playing days. He captained his club Ballinderreren to win the Galway Junior B hurling championship in 1995, playing alongside his teenage son Eoin. Joe was 42, time to take the last puck and concentrate on the administration, which brought him to presidency of the GAA, 1997-2000. Protocol demanded that he had to do things in a certain way as president but his enduring message to the GAA at all levels, delivered in any of his three languages was ‘stop moaning and get on with it’.

TÁ MÉ SÍNTE

In November 2015, his sporting friends from UCG organised a 40th reunion. Joe was in hospital but he sent a message of regret "tá mé sinte le pneumonia le seachtain san ospidéal". Only it wasn't pneumonia, but the insidious cancer that was to claim his life on May 20, 2016. Let McDonagh’s motto be the mantra that Fergal O’Connor will adopt for the Kerry players on Sunday. No mouthing to the referee, even when he makes dubious calls, as all refs do. Kerry are up against it, but they can win an All-Ireland Cup they deserve. If they win it, they won’t be allowed bring the cup home, as per GAA protocol during COVID-19 and rightly so. It will be welcome in Kerry anytime, but a huge effort will be needed during the game.

The Kerry hurlers react to their defeat, by Antrim, in the National Hurling League Division Two final in Tullamore in October. This loss will provide motivation for a win on Sunday.

Hurling’s chance to shine in Kerry | By Sean Moriarty

Sunday’s All-Ireland B Hurling final presents a great opportunity for the Kerry County Board to increase it promotion of hurling in the county. That is according to John Lenihan, the manager of the Dr Crokes Hurling team. The Killarney side won the 2020 Kerry Intermediate title, defeating Tralee Parnells on September 20. Hurling in Kerry is dominated by North Kerry sides and promotion of the sport beyond this traditional heartland is almost non-existent. There are a few exceptions to this. Kilgarvan and Kenmare have strong hurling traditions and emergence of Dr Crokes and Tralee Parnells suggest there is a welcome shift away from the North Kerry dominance. But, for many it feels like a closed shop. As a result of this year’s Intermediate Championship, the Killarney Club has the option of playing Senior Championship hurling in Kerry next season. “There are some people in North Kerry that would not want this,” Lenihan told the Killarney Advertiser. “It is almost like we are a nuisance to these people.” Lenihan is originally from the North Cork Hurling stronghold of Newtownshandrum and has been working and living in Killarney for close on 30 years. He

describes himself as a hurling fanatic and has promoted the sport at all levels, including acting as a County Board hurling delegate over the years. Sometimes he feels he is banging his head off a solid wall. Grassroot support varies from limited to zero. Outside of the traditional North Kerry stronghold, he feels very few care about the sport in the Kingdom. “Hurling is a national sport and should be treated that way,” he says. He is calling on the County Board to redress this balance and to use Sunday’s final, win or lose, as the building blocks for a hurling future in Kerry. “The North clubs are very happy with their eight or nine clubs in a 30km radius," he adds. “Where is the countywide vision for hurling in Kerry?” If Kerry win on Sunday, they will have a playoff match against the lowest ranked Munster hurling team, which could pave the way for an entry in to Provincial championship proper next season. The footballers’ loss to Cork in the Munster Semi Final last month mean they go into next season as the third Munster seed. It doesn’t take a rocket scientist to figure out the potential of all of this. Imagine a Munster semi-final double-header in Killarney against Tipperary or the same scenario in Parc UI Caoimhe against Cork.

Every child in Kerry looks up to the likes of David Clifford. The Fossa man is, without doubt, one of the finest footballers in the country. As the old saying goes, success breeds success, and it seems Kerry always has a full conveyor belt of emerging football talent. The same could be achieved hurling according to Lenihan. “It needs to start in the schools,” he says. “It seems the county board as a whole in anti-hurling – it is not cool.” Lenihan believes the under-age structure is reasonably good but once players begin to come of age they will prioritise football over hurling, mainly because there are more opportunities in football and a much better structure. “When young players come out of Under 14 and Under 16 age groups, there is too much going on, parents will take them out of one code and what is the code to suffer? hurling,” he adds. Sunday’s game could be the key to reversing this but even that is not certain. “It will draw attention [to Kerry hurling], it will expose it more,” he says. “But there will be many more Kerry people who won’t even bother to tune in.” Even if hurling remains the poorer cousin of football in Kerry – and we really hope not – there are distinct advantages from a player's point-of-view. One perfect example of this is current county football

star, Gavin White. The former Kerry captain is a life-long member of Dr Crokes and hurled for the Black and Amber in his youth and before football took over. Noted for his spatial awareness on the pitch, Lenihan believes his background in hurling has given him an advantage over his rivals. “There is no doubt he is a better footballer, he is braver in difficult situations,” adds Lenihan. It is also hoped that the success of the current Kerry hurling team could translate into a stronger presence of the sport at grassroots level. This year’s County Intermediate Hurling finalists were an amalgamation, as such, of town teams, but more clubs should be encouraged to create hurling arms within traditional footballing clubs. Tralee Parnell is a standalone hurling club but the county town boasts four football clubs. The same applies to Dr Crokes. “We have two Legion members who hurl with us and another from the Glenflesk club,” adds Lenihan. Whatever happens on Sunday, win or lose, it is worth reminding sports fans that the only Kerry team that made it to Croke Park for an All-Ireland final this year are the exponents of the ‘small ball’ and for that reason alone the entire county should be glued to their television screens on Sunday afternoon.

Sunday's final could help promote hurling even further in Kerry. Dr Crokes are the County Intermediate Hurling Champions but are the only team from the Killarney District in the competition

Essential reading for sports fans this Christmas

11.12.2020

Sports fans will not be found wanting this festive season – there are plenty of new books released just in time for the holidays – and something to suit all tastes. SOCCER

There are plenty of Liverpool FC fans in Killarney, who can forget their colourful cavalcade through the town’s streets in July after The Reds secured their first Premiership title last season. The historic moment is well documented in several books but our favourite ‘Believe Us’ by Mellissa Ruddy. She was given unprecedented access to players, management and staff throughout the championship winning season. Every winning team needs a manager and Jurgen Kloop’s story is told in ‘Kloop – My Liverpool Romance’ by Anthony Quinn while Andy Robertson tells his inside story in ‘Robbo – Now you are gonna believe us’. It is not all about Liverpool, ‘My life in Red and White’ tells of Arsene Wenger’s time in charge of Arsenal FC and controversial footballer Andy Cole tells his story in 'Fast Forward'. Although on the market now for a couple of months, ‘Champagne Football’ is the dramatic tale of John Delaney’s time in charge of the FAI. ‘Jack Charlton – the authorised biography’ is another book sure to be popular with soccer fans.

HORSE RACING

Horse racing fans will want to get stuck

into ‘True Colours’ by champion jockey Barry Geraghty and from a Kerry point of view, ‘Thrills and Spills’ is a photo archive of horse racing images captured by the Healy Racing photo-agency in Listowel.

GAA

He might be public enemy number one in this part of the world but Bernard Brogan holds seven All-Ireland football medals – more than many a Kerry player – and his life in the blue jersey of Dublin is told in ‘The Hill’. GAA history buffs will like ‘The People’s Games’ a compendium of key moments in the sport’s history. ‘Great GAA Rivalries’ by John Scally, does exactly what it says on the cover, Sportsfile takes a look back at the decades of GAA action that the agency has captured by their cameras with ‘Great Moments in Gaelic Football’. History and GAA fans will want to read ‘The Bloodied Field’ which tells the story of the Bloody Sunday massacre at Croke Park in November 1920.

RUGBY

Rob Kearney is said to be the most decorated Irish rugby player of all time and his ‘No Hiding’ chronicles his life on and off the pitch.

‘Fuel’ is the remarkable story of Sean O’Brien’s unlikely rise to rugby stardom.

MOTORSPORT

Local rally fans are waiting for the arrival of ‘Icons of Irish Rallying’ in the shops. A group of 75 famous and not so famous rally drivers, co-drivers and organisers tell their story to Headford enthusiast Michael O’Mahoney. Grand Prix racing is 70-years-old this year and while there are many books available to tell the story of the last seven decades our recommendation is ‘Formula One: The Official History’ by England-based Northern Irishman Maurice Hamilton. Fans of two-wheeled motorsport will want to read the story of motorcycle hero Valentino Rossi who has released ‘The Definitive Autobiography’.

CYCLING

Staying with two-wheels, cycling supporters will be familiar with the dulcet tones of legendary broadcaster Carlton Kirby who has published a memoir of his time behind the mic at world famous cycle races. ‘Magic Spanner’ is the cycling world according to Kirby. Former Tour de France winner Geraint Thomas has written a guide on the world’s toughest climbs. ‘The Mountains According to G’ is suitable for the

serious cyclist who might want to try one of the climbs for themselves or the armchair fan who wants an insight into the effort professional cyclists go to while chasing a stage win in the mountains.

RANDOM PICKS American Football’s New England Patriots definitive story is told in ‘The Dynasty’. Award-winning investigative journalist David Walsh uncovers allegations of drug misuse in Athletics with the ‘Russian Affair'. ‘Girls Play Too’ features 25 Irish sportswomen who followed their dreams to international acclaim. What do sports stars do when they retire? ‘When the World Stops Watching', takes a candid look at the lives of Irish sport stars in their sporting afterlife. Legendary RTÉ producer and director Michael O’Carroll has witnessed some of the greatest sporting occasions, not just in Ireland, but across the world and he tells his story in ‘Right Time and Place'.

CHILDREN’S BOOKS The much loved broadcaster Micheal O Muircheartaigh shares his lifelong passion of the GAA with younger readers in ‘The Story of Croke Park’.
