"Don't shut Main Street" plead town retailers Killarney town retailers - left frustrated and angry after large crowds turned the town into chaos last weekend - are pleading with the Council to keep Main St open for fear of repeat behaviour over the summer months. | By Michelle Crean Some retailers were forced to close early on Saturday, and again on Sunday, as their doorways in Punkett St and other areas of town were blocked by the groups who were drinking on the street while others sat on shop window sills drinking, singing and dancing in the streets into the early hours of the morning. In the aftermath rubbish was left strewn all over the town - which was later cleaned up by Kerry Council Council (KCC) staff. With plans for Main Street to be pedestrianised at the weekends throughout July and August, Killarney Town Centre Retail Action Group, which has 30 members, have said that they've written to the Council to plead with them to cancel plans as they fear a continuation of the anti-social behaviour every weekend. "Main St is the main artery of our town," William Sheahan, of Sheahan’s Pharmacy, told the Killarney Advertiser. "We

want Kerry County Council to listen and back us." Denis O’Neill, from O’Neill's Fishing Tackle on Plunkett St, said he had to let his staff go home early on Saturday and Sunday due to the crowds gathered outside the door of his shop. "It completely inhibited my ability to trade. For my staff it wasn't a safe environment as the crowd was getting too big." William added that the only reason the town didn’t hit national headlines was because the spotlight was on similar scenes on South William Street in Dublin. "We fear if they [Kerry County Council] close Main St that it could become permanent, that there'll be repeat incidents similar to last summer and last weekend on Plunkett St and it'll drive more locals and certain types of businesses out of
town and the town centre will only trade for the summer months. We want Killarney town to be a safe friendly place for both locals and tourists. The gardai are doing the best they can.” They added that Killarney did an exemplary job last summer containing COVID and now there’s a fear that cases could be brought from Limerick into town. "We want people to leave Killarney thinking what a great job Killarney did in protecting us given the current pandemic and last weekend certainly did not reflect that." They also said that they didn't recognise any locals in the crowds." Locals wouldn't do this," William added. They added that "plastic glass drinking cannot become the normal for the town" and they want the pubs and rest of hospitality to reopen as soon as possible, as it's a "controlled environment".
Taking place on Saturday, June 26 in The Gleneagle INEC the stellar lineup includes Irish music legend Christy Moore, singer-songwriter Susan O’Neill, traditional singer Muireann Nic Amhlaoibh, and performer extraordinaire Jack L. Tickets were not sold individually but instead in pods of six. Each pod was allocated a specific arrival time and a pre-allocated table. Facemasks are required when arriving at and vacating the venue. Doors will open at 6.30pm to allow for staggered arrival times and the concert will begin at 8pm. Attendees were required to take part in a survey at point of purchase and the data gathered will be supplied to the Department for research purposes. In order to facilitate contract tracing contact details for all attendees will be collected and all attendees will be required to have their smartphone switched on and the HSE COVID App installed.
Community rally to save Alannah's sight | By Michelle Crean The Killorglin community are rallying to help a local family whose little girl is undergoing chemotherapy to help save her sight. Four-year-old Alannah Foley is facing weekly trips to Dublin after being diagnosed with Neurofibromatosis Type 1 (NF1), a condition that can cause benign tumours to grow on nerve tissue. In order halt the growth and stop it pressing on her vision her mom Geraldine Dunleavy and dad Andrew Foley are facing weekly trips to Tralee every Thursday to University Hospital Kerry for blood tests followed by a long trip to Dublin each Friday. And facing the cost of travel to Dublin which will last over a year, their
good friend Kevin Sheehan set up the GoFundMe: 'Alannah and Polly's Fight for Sight' page which has so far raised over €12,000 of the €20,000 goal. At five-months-old Alannah's parents noticed marks on her body called Cafe au Lait stains, indicators of an underlying illness. After a trip to the GP they were referred to a neurologist in January 2019. And over that summer Alannah started to appear wobbly and dizzy. She was referred to Cork from her GP and two days later had an MRI which was diagnosed as a tumour which had a build up fluid on her brain. After further testing it turned out to be benign and she was fitted with a shunt to drain the fluid away from her brain down through her stomach. "We
were stunned. It meant trips to Dublin every three months for eye exams, then 10 days later MRIs and 10 days after that travelling up for the results," her mom Geraldine told the Killarney Advertiser. "When she had her last eye exam they felt it was impacting on her eyesight and opted for chemo." Andrew, a chef, works as the deli manager in Keane's SuperValu in Killorglin and Geraldine works in childcare part-time. "We're only at the start of it really," she said. "Polly, Alannah's port, got fitted the day of the cyberattack which meant she could not be put on the system in the Mercy Hospital." The couple, who live in Lynch Heights, head to Dublin every Friday leaving home at 5.30am and it's a late journey home as

Second devastating blow to local motor club
WIN A HOUSE: Barraduff Community Field Organisation fundraiser sub-committee members: Derry Healy, Michael O'Keeffe, Cathy Somers, Linda Dennehy, John Culloty and Rory D'Arcy pictured in the INEC on Sunday evening during the 'Win A Dream Kerry Home' draw.
Lucky local wins dream Barraduff home It has been seven months in the making but it was one lucky local who claimed the top prize - a 3-Bed Detached House in Barraduff | By Michelle Crean Ticket no. 17033 owned by Catriona Moriarty was the winner, chosen on Sunday evening in the ‘Win A Dream Kerry Home’ fundraiser prize draw live streamed on Facebook and the website from the INEC Arena, Killarney. The MC for the evenings event was Rory D’Arcy, fundraiser committee member. Committee member, Liam Warren, joined Rory to speak about the history and aims of the Barraduff Community Field Organisation since its inception in 1977. It was then time for the prize draw, with the combined value of all prizes in excess of €300,000. Rory introduced
the independent adjudicating team of Peter Malone, Solicitor, Malone Hegarty Solicitors, and Denis Murphy, Auditor, Moriarty & Murphy Accountants. It was certainly a night to remember for all prize winners, particularly Catriona Moriarty who will soon be receiving the keys to her new home. "The Barraduff Community Field Organisation are forever grateful to all who supported this fundraiser, through purchasing of ticket(s) and sponsoring of prizes, to assist us in realising the vision of our local community. This is only the end of the beginning of another chapter!" Michael O'Keeffe said.
Members of Killarney and District Motor Club paid a fitting tribute to their late colleague Mike Falvey who was laid to rest in Churchtown Cemetery yesterday afternoon (Thursday). Mike passed away last week following a sudden illness. Mike held many roles in the club and was particularly active if a rally route passed his native Beaufort, Churchtown or Shanera areas. He is best remembered for his role as a member of the arrowing or stage-set up crew on either the Rally of the Lakes or the Killarney Historic Rally. With his motto firmly at the forefront of club members’ minds, KDMC gave Mike the send-off he deserved. Over 50 members of the club lined the road from his father Jerry’s house in Cappaganeen to St Mary’s Church Beaufort. The road from St Mary’s to his final resting place at Churchtown Cemetery was laid out in the same style as a rally stage, each junction correctly numbered and perfectly arrowed as if Mike had done the job himself. Each location was marshalled by members of the club or neighbouring clubs in recognition of his work as Chief Marshall for the Rally of the Lakes. His funeral cortege, which was led by his Citroen van, decked in official rally stage

Mike will be missed by his daughter Chloe, father Jerry, his partner Tanya, brothers John, Diarmuid and Donal, sisters-in-law Siobhán, Máiread and Kelly, nieces, nephew, aunts, cousins, neighbours and many close friends.
Further investigations in to cause of hotel fire The owner of a town centre hotel which went on fire in the early hours of Monday morning - resulting in the evacuation of over 200 guests - says he's heartbroken. Pat Eviston had reopened the doors of Eviston House on New Street to guests just five days earlier after five months of COVID closures. 25 fire fighters, two fire appliances from Killarney, one from Killorglin, Tralee, and Castleisland, rushed to the hotel at 6.15am as a fire tore through the building. It had started in a room just off the kitchen on the first floor and spread along the venting and ducting on the second and third floors. There was heavy smoke throughout the hotel and all guests were evacuated safely. The fire was brought under control at approximately 9.30am but fire fighters remained on scene until 3.30pm. "We're just grateful everybody was OK," owner Pat Eviston told the Kil-

He added that further investigations have to take place to establish the cause of the fire and they have no idea yet when they'll reopen. "It's still too early to know. Everything is still up in the air. More inspections have to be done. We're just grateful everybody was OK, that's all we can take from it. Pieta House benefits from beauty workshops | By Michelle Crean A local make-up artist has been "blown away" by the incredible support for her most recent fundraiser.
TEA TIME: Nora Murphy, Mary Lehane and Betty Carmody, drinking a cuppa as they raise awareness about this year's Virtual Tea for Motor Neurone Disease which takes place on June 21.
Go on...put the kettle on to help a good cause!
Annette O’Brien hosted an online beauty workshop to raise funds for Pieta House. She has since presented a total of €5,424 raised over two years, to Con O'Connor, Funding & Advocacy Coordinator South West, Pieta House. Last year during lockdown she set up an online make-up tutorial class for Pieta House raising a total of €2,400. This year she wanted to raise money again and did so by joining forces with two fellow Cork ladies, a hair expert, Audrey Cashman from Upstyle Junkie and Skin Expert Sherna Malone, and they raised €3,024. "We filmed hair, make-up and skincare tutorials and made them available to anyone who donated €15 to Pieta House,"
Annette told the Killarney Advertiser. "All proceeds from ticket sales went to the charity. The tutorials went live on May 8 which coincided with the Darkness Into Light walk. I also did the walk that morning." She explained that she feels Pieta House is an amazing charity, especially during this pandemic. "The support they offer for anyone who needs it is life-changing. I have close friends who have lost loved ones and I see the amount of work Pieta House does for families after someone passes away through suicide. When it affects some of your friends, it's nice then to give something back to charity even if it's through your work. I am blown away by the donations and support. I want to say a massive thank you to everyone who bought a ticket and hope you enjoyed the beauty tutorials. A very special thank you to both Audrey and Sherna who gave their free time to do this also."
June 21 is Global Motor Neurone Disease (MND) Awareness Day and one local group is calling for participants to get involved. | By Michelle Crean Christy Lehane, Chairman of Kerry Friends of Motor Neurone and Ambassador for the IMNDA, will take part in the Virtual Tea for MND fundraiser and awareness event. "We never thought this time last year that 12 months later we would be doing Virtual Tea for MND," Christy told the Killarney Advertiser. "In these COVID times our fundraising efforts have all ceased, but sadly there is no slowing down of Motor Neurone Disease. Providing the support and services to our Motor Neurone sufferers is now more important than ever before. I am now appealing to all you good people and friends who have supported us in the past to please hear my plea. I myself will drink Virtual Tea for MND again this year. So go on, put on the kettle and take out the china tea pot and get family and friends around to the garden for a brew and a catchup for a great cause. If you do not feel comfortable with having people around, you can go very modern and go
Zooming and encourage your friends to do so also. I am aware that some of our MND sufferers are themselves organising Virtual Tea Drinking get togethers." Participating SuperValu stores are on board again this year providing tea bags etc. to raise awareness of MND, and staff will be asking shoppers for donations for the IMNDA starting on June 7 to 21. "I seldom seek donations and financial support, but perhaps in these COVID times when our need is greatest you might be moved to help us." Every year MND Associations across the globe mark June 21 as a special day of recognition where the International Alliance of ALS/MND Associations across the world undertake a range of activities to raise awareness and keep focused on the search for the cause, treatment and eventual cure for this terrible disease. You can donate to www.imnda.ie or if you can contact Christy Lehane Chairman of Kerry Friends of Motor Neurone and Ambassador for the IMNDA on 087 9671011.

Bank Holiday Monday is a day which will be marked in the history books - as pubs, bars and restaurants reopened up for outdoor dining - after months of COVID closures.
"A huge thanks to our team that stayed with us and were instrumental in developing the back yard," Kate said. Visitors included Donal, Billy, Breda and Clodagh Shanahan who travelled from Cork on a day trip. "We're from Cork so it was great to stop somewhere like K-Town and get something to eat. It’s fantastic to get a great meal in Killarney." Also enjoying K-Town were Sinead Griffin, Colleen Breen, Jane Shanahan, and Megan Fitzgerald who collectively said that it was "great to be back to normality". The buzz is back in town as pubs and restaurants reopen | By Grigoriy Geniyevskiy There was relief all around and the date is another step back to normality for the country and especially Killarney town. There was a good atmosphere in various business premises as locals and visitors enjoyed the good weather and a pint or two of their favourite beverage. Indoor dining will not be available until next month, however that didn't stop many of the pubs and restaurants in Killarney from opening with all the outside gardens, streets and accommodated facilities. The Killarney Advertiser was out and about and caught up with business owners who said that they were very happy and relieved to be back doing what they
do best. Brian Murphy of Courtney's Bar said that they were "delighted to be back". "I'm looking forward to the next phase of reopening," he said. Niamh Sheahan from Reidys?? added that she's also "delighted" to be reopened and to welcome back her customers and teams. "We have new food and new cocktail menus." Sinead Sheahan from the Porterhouse couldn't contain her happiness saying that it was "great to see everyone back and to see a good buzz in town". Kate O’Leary from The Laurels Pub & Restaurant additionally commented that it was "lovely to be open and see our customers again".

Healthcare workers receive gift bags Healthcare heroes at one local hospital were amongst thousands to receive gift bags as a thank you for their hard work during COVID-19. As part of its 'Healthcare Heroes' campaign, Peter Mark recently made a surprise delivery of the gift bags which he gave to nurses and healthcare staff at Killarney Community Hospital. 'Healthcare Heroes' is a nationwide campaign by Peter Mark to show its appreciation for healthcare workers by donating gift bags with hair and beauty products to local hospitals. Peter Mark has delivered 4,512 bags to local healthcare workers all over Ireland. The campaign is the brainchild of celebrity stylist Adee Phelan who, at the beginning of lockdown in the UK in March 2020, had an idea that he would like to give something back to the hardworking
staff of the NHS. Following on from the success of the campaign in the UK, Adee teamed up with Peter Mark to bring the campaign to Ireland. Peter O’Rourke, CEO, Peter Mark said the hairdressing group was keen to get involved and provide support in any way they can. “It has been a challenging year for everyone but in particular the healthcare workers who are working so hard in extremely challenging circumstances. The 'Healthcare Heroes' campaign is our way of showing our appreciation and saying a small thank you to them for everything that they do.”

CALLOUTS: It was a busy weekend for members of the Kerry Mountain Rescue Team who had five callouts to attend.
No rest for selfless volunteers | By Michelle Crean
There was no Bank Holiday rest for selfless volunteers over the long weekend as they attended a number of separate calls for help. A total of 25 members of the Kerry Mountain Rescue Team were involved in the incidents over a four hour period on Sunday. At 2.45pm on Sunday, the team was contacted by Aeromed to deal with two incidents in the McGillycuddy’s Reeks. "The first incident involved a female walker who had sustained a broken ankle near the summit of Strickeen Mountain above the Gap of Dunloe," Colm Burke, PRO Kerry Mountain Rescue Team Team, said. "Members assisted on scene and the casualty was airlifted to hospital by the R115 Coastguard helicopter." The second incident involved a female walker who had also sustained a lower leg injury on the ZigZags while descending Cnoc na Toinne towards the Hags Glen. "The team treated the woman at the scene before stretchering her to Ard na Locha where she was then transferred by team Land Rover to an awaiting ambulance at Lisleibane." At 6.20pm that evening, the team re-
ceived another call for assistance from Anglesea Garda Station. A male walker in his 30s had dislocated his knee near Lough Fada above Gougane Barra. The team travelled over but were stood down shortly afterwards as R115 successfully evacuated the casualty from the scene. The callouts concluded at 7.45pm. Kerry Mountain Rescue were also tasked to assist a man, aged 56, who collapsed while climbing Mount Brandon last Thursday. He later died. They were also called later the same evening to assist with the rescue of a man in his 80s who had become exhausted while climbing Carrauntoohil. "This brought to five the total number of callouts for the Bank Holiday weekend, which is a reflection of the increase in outdoor activity in the past number of weeks," he said. "The team would like to remind people to ensure they are properly prepared and equipped for any mountain activity they are partaking in over these summer months. Of particular importance is the wearing of appropriate footwear and clothing, and good route planning and navigation skills. A fully charged mobile phone should be carried at all times, along with food and water, rain gear, suncream, map and compass."

Gardaí arrested a man and seized €140,000 of suspected cannabis herb in Kilcummin over the weekend. As part of an ongoing investigation into the sale and supply of drugs in the Killarney area, Gardaí from the Kerry Divisional Drugs Unit carried out a search of a wooded area in Kilcummin. A man, aged in his late teens, was arrested at the scene and was brought to Killarney Garda Station where he was detained under Section 2 of the Criminal Justice (Drug Trafficking) Act, 1996. Principal of Killarney Community College, Stella Loughnane, acknowledged the uniqueness of this year. "This year has been a turbulent and emotional year for this particular Leaving Cert group. sen exams. I think this is of great comfort to students and will ease some of their nerves. The majority of our students have embraced this challenge and chosen to sit their exams." She added that also this year there are a lot more COVID guidelines from both the Department of Health and the Department of Education that both the school and students must adhere to. "This year has shown how adaptable our students are, therefore I don't believe they will cause too much fuss. However, like every other year, our students arrived with the age old butterflies in their stomachs but a willingness to begin their exams." Sean Coffey, Principal of St Brendan's College said it was great to see the exams finally underway. "It has been the most incredible two years for the students. This is as fair as you can get really. I would say the Sixth Years had a less disruptive year than other students as they had their eye on the prise and could see the finish line in sight."
For Killian O'Brien, a student in St Brendan's College, he said that there was no stress as he headed in. "I'm grand out, not stressed at all." George Griffin, also a student in St
Brendan's College was glad to begin the final leg of his school journey and said he too felt grand about it. "Predictable grades are a good backing to it, it levels out the stress." His classmate Darren Counihan was "not too worried" about what was ahead of him. "You can only go up in points, not down thanks to accredited points." Luke Tindall, also a student in the school said he was alright and "not too stressed" For Adam O'Connor there was some nerves. "I'm feeling a bit of everything, but mostly stressed," he said. "I'm just waiting to get it done and over with." In Killarney Community College Oliwia Bielanska spoke to the Killarney Adver-

Kate makes the U18 Munster Development Squad | By Michelle Crean A young sporty local girl has progressed to the next step for the Munster Development Squad - the first female player from Killarney RFC to do so.
GIG: Kodaline are set to play an acoustic set in the INEC this coming December.
Kodaline to play stripped down Killarney gig One of Ireland's best known bands - who have had their recently released studio album streamed more than 60 million times - as well as reached 100 million YouTube views - are set to come to Killarney. | By Michelle Crean Kodaline will play their first ever stripped down fully acoustic tour on December 4 in the Gleneagle INEC Arena, which is part of a nationwide tour across the country. And tickets go on sale today (Friday), at 9am from www.inec.ie. ‘One Day At A Time’ is the band’s fourth album, and adds a new chapter to a career that has already encompassed three number 1 albums in Ireland, two Top 5 albums in the UK, and more than a billion streams at Spotify. Kodaline approached the album with a streamlined process that took them back to their roots. The majority of the sessions revolved around the four band members alone in their modest recording space in Dublin, with bassist Jason Boland leading the production side of things.
CAREER
In 2019, Kodaline played some of the biggest shows of their career. At home in Dublin they sold-out two huge outdoor shows at St Anne’s Park, while a 10-date UK tour culminated with a packed show at London’s historic Roundhouse. Further afield, they hit festivals including Lollapalooza, Benicàssim and Open’er before becoming the first Irish band to headline the massive NH7 Weekender in Pune, India. Their extensive touring throughout Asia also included a headline set at Monsoon Music Festival in Vietnam plus dates in China, Japan, South Korea, The Phillippines, Malaysia, Indonesia, Thailand, Taiwan and Singapore. "We’re excited to do our first ever stripped down fully acoustic tour, it’s something we’ve wanted to do for a long time and something that’s gonna be very special for us. Hope to see you guys there," the band said.
Transition Year student from St Brigid's Presentation Secondary School, Kate Donoghue, was introduced to rugby during her PE class in TY and moved on to participate with Killarney RFC. Kate is the first female player to progress through this pathway through the club and school. She will now train over the summer with the Munster squad U18 in preparation for the Inter Provisional competitions in late August. Her school this week congratualted her amazing achievement as well as Killarney RFC. “Killarney RFC would like to congratulate Kate on progressing onto the next stage," Liam Murphy said. first female player to progress through the Killarney RFC pathway and we at the club are very proud of her achievements. This is a historic occasion for the club and a result of the phenomenal work gone into developing girls rugby to date at KRFC. We now field teams at U14, U16 and U18 as well as having many girls play rugby at Minis to U12. It’s wonderful to see Kate progressing and is a wonderful role model for the younger players of the club.”
Laura's new look for Leaving Cert Rathmore's Laura Cronin headed into her Leaving Cert exams this week with a whole new look after transforming her hairstyle for charity. Laura, daughter of Una and Donal from Rathbeg, cut 14 inches off her hair for The Rapunzel Foundation. As her long locks didn't get cut over the last year Laura decided to get a good chop in Katelynn's Hair Design in Rathmore instead, and use the left over hair to create wigs for sick children. "I thought, rather than trim it I'd cut a lot off," Laura, who hopes to study pharmacy in college, told the Killarney Advertiser. "I wanted to cut off a lot of it, I was sick of long hair. I said that if there'd be enough I'd donate it as it'd be a shame to see it on the floor." Laura said that hopefully it can make a child happy if it allows them to receive a specially made wig for their First Holy Communion, or a similar occasion. "I'd encourage anyone who has long hair to think about what they could do with it."

Joe is 17, a gifted artist and a brilliant older brother to 12-year-old Finn. They live with their Ma and Da in a Dublin tower block called Bojaxhiu or 'the Jax'. It's not an easy place to be a kid, especially when your father, Frank, is the muscle for the notorious gang leader Dessie 'The Badger' Murphy. But whether it's daytrips to the beach or drawing secret sketches, Joe works hard to show Finn life beyond the battered concrete yard below their flat. Joe is determined not to become like his Da. But when Finn falls ill, Joe finds his convictions harder to cling to. Gardening - By Debby Looney
Debby is available for advice and garden consultations, just call 086 6088156 or email barnhillky@gmail.com
Large shrubs are easy to care for There is a whole group of plants which form the backbone of any garden, which need little care once planted, but are of great use to the new gardener. These plants form the ‘shrubbery’ - that place in many large gardens where plants are put and forgotten about, but which give a good display and add interest to the garden. However, for a beginner, the question of what goes into these large beds, these places which you fill ‘down at the bottom of the garden’, can be quite a daunting one! So I thought I would arm readers with a list of large shrubs which will grow in just about any condition, are easy to care for but are still attractive and worth having. These plants are generally not for small gardens as they will grow to about 1.5m x 1.2m. An old favourite in many gardens is the Weigelia. It is deciduous with trumpet shaped flowers in summer. W. variegate has lovely brightly variegated cream and green leaves with pale pink flowers, ‘Eva Rathke’ has dark green leaves with deep crimson buds opening to dark pink flowers, and ‘Looymansii aurea’ has golden leaves with pale pink flowers. Weigelia middendorffiana is a little unusual and more difficult to find, but has beautiful yellow flowers with deep red throat markings reminiscent of a rhododendron. These all flower best in a sunny site. There are many Berberis varieties, but Berberis ‘Rose Glow’ is ideal for any large border. It has deep purple foliage but the new shoots are bright pink flecked with white giving it its glowing name. B. Aurea has golden foliage, and B. ‘Helmond Pillar’ has red-purple foliage and a columnar habit.
Another ideal purple foliaged plant is Physocarpus ‘Diabolo’ which really will grow in any condition adding height and width to a large border. It does have flowers, the buds of which are pink opening to cream, but it is its foliage and tall arching branches which make it a winner! P. ‘Dart’s Gold’ has golden foliage, and is equally attractive in its own sunny way. Philadelphus, or mock orange, is a plant which should be in everyone’s garden. It has white flowers which are highly scented. P.’Lemoinei’ is an excellent variety, a strong grower and tolerant of wind and cold. It has single, white flowers. ‘Boule d’Argent’ has double flowers and is also very reliable. There is a lovely miniature, albeit spreading, Philadelphus suitable for a smaller garden, growing to about 60cm, called ‘Manteau d’Hermine’. It is very easy to grow also. ‘Belle Etoile’ is probably the easiest to find and will reward you with masses of fragrant white flowers. A great evergreen shrub is Drimys lanceolata. In early spring it has clusters of creamy coloured, insignificant flowers – which are a haven for bees and pollinators at that time of year. I never realise mine is flowering until I walk past and hear the buzzing! The leaves are deep green, glossy and leathery, but the shoots are a bright to deep red, making it quite striking. This is an ideal plant for flower arrangers as its stems are so unusual. As usual, I have run out of space, but next week I will continue this list of useful, hardy, low maintenance staples!

By Nicky Barry There was a sense of freedom, like just after the Blitz, When German planes bombed nightly, and London was in bits. When the Allies stormed French beaches, and put Hitler on the run, All over free Europe, folks rejoiced in the sun. The invasion took place on D-Day, the sixth day of June, And for happy Europeans, it was a breakthrough boon. Our liberation from lockdown, came on June the seventh, And folks flocked back to Irish pubs, as if in seventh heaven. There were no bombed out buildings, or soldiers on the streets, Just old friends touching elbows, in the new way to greet. Bar staff were delighted, to be back pulling pints, After months of doing little, and staying home at night. High stools were still missing, but no one minded this, For to be sitting with a pint, was tantamount to bliss. Old folks who had got the jab, were grinning ear to ear, And feeling invincible, with nothing left to fear. Nobody burst into song, as they did back in the day, For they were quite tentative, refusing to make hay. All in all it was a breakthrough, from a grim lockdown, For pubs were back in business, and folks were back in town!

Digital COVID passports to be available by July By July 1, the European Union plans to make the COVID-19 passport available to all EU citizens and residents, as well as select types of third-country travellers. With one of the EU's fundamental values frozen for over a year, the Digital Green Certificate paves the way for free and safe movement within Europe in the COVID-19 era. The EESC welcomes the introduction of the Digital Green Certificate as an excellent common standard to minimise complexity for travelling passengers and to facilitate their movement, as long as fundamental rights and data protection requirements are fully respected. The COVID-19 pandemic has been an exceptional shock for our economies, societies and lives. The tourism sector has been severely affected, with 2020 being the worst year on record for tourism. Europe saw a 69% decline in arrivals in 2020 and an 85% decline in January 2021. It gives citizens hope that they will be able to travel freely and safely in the EU as the summer season is approaching. lion in revenue per month due to the COVID-19 crisis. The certificate includes sensitive personal medical data, which makes it crucial for the Member States to have interoperable systems with equally strong data protection provisions. The certificate should therefore be designed in such a way that this informa-
tion is only visible to the traveller and any third person only sees that the person fulfils a condition. The EESC firmly believes that the Digital Green Certificate has the potential to become a successful tool for restarting mobility in the EU, as long as it is fully interoperable, secure, verifiable and valid in all EU countries.
On May 28, user "polizna" listed the oddly shaped chicken nugget on eBay for only 99 cents. Things got a bit crazy after 184 bids when the item sold for $99,997. The nugget received a boost after being published on the official 'Among Us' Twitter account, but only after it had already surpassed $34,000 in value. The vendor had said that the nugget in issue will be frozen and sealed before shipping in order to keep it as fresh as possible. It'll also come with some McDonald's Szechuan Sauce, which, owing to Rick and Morty, became an Internet hit in 2018. The buyer's identity remains unknown. If you think you've lost out on an edible treasure, don't worry, on eBay, several deep-fried copies have already shown up, hoping to cash in on the 'Among Us' mania. The price of these "impostor nuggets" ranges from 50 cents to $5,000.

Crazy device invented for compulsive phone users A satirical solution for “smartphone zombies” has been invented by a South Korean industrial designer for those who have problems with walking into walls or other barriers.
NEW POSITION: Outgoing chairman of Siamsa Tíre, Joe Leonard, pictured with new chairman Sean Murphy, and Executive Director Róisín McGarr.
Paeng Min-wook (28), has created 'The Third Eye', a robotic eyeball that compulsive mobile phone users may clip to their foreheads to browse injury-free while on the go. It's intended to make people "recognise the severity" of their smartphone addictions, the inventor says. When the device detects that the user's head has been lowered to look at a smartphone, it opens its transparent eyelid. The gadget beeps when the user is within one to two metres of an obstacle, alerting the user to the imminent risk. Passer-by Lee Ok-jo saw the use of the third eye and had said: "I thought he looked like an alien with an eye on his
forehead. These days many young people can get into accidents while using their mobile phone. This would be good for them." 'The Third Eye' uses a gyro sensor to measure the angle of the user's neck and an ultrasonic sensor to calculate the distance between the robotic eye and obstacles. The sensors are both linked to an opensource single-board microcontroller with a battery pack.
New chairman first exclusive for Siamsa Tíre World’s ‘dark spot’ summer holiday Tralee's Siamsa Tíre has reopened by announcing changes to its board. At its AGM last week, Joe Leonard stepped down as chairman and was replaced by Seán Murphy of Murphy’s Ice Cream.
Joe, who is Group HR Director with PM Group, an engineering and construction management company in Cork, was first appointed as chairman in 2011. “During his time with us, Joe has been a great leader, ambassador and friend of Siamsa Tíre,” Artistic Director Jonathan Kelliher, said. “I had the pleasure of working closely with Joe over the last 11 years during challenging but rewarding times.” Seán Murphy was born and raised in New York and has lived in Dingle for the
past 21 years. He is a keen musician who has always had an interest in the arts. “We have focused on supporting local ever since we set up Murphy’s Ice Cream,” Seán said. “This is an opportunity to expand that support to the county’s premier theatre and art space. I am joining a wide group of people who have worked hard over the past 50 years to keep folk heritage alive. Being a part of the future of that heritage is an honour and a privilege.” The building will be open from Thursday to Sunday throughout the summer, restrictions permitting. The National Folk Theatre photo exhibition will be installed for the first month of reopening and in July, a new interactive Homecoming Exhibition will be launched.
It's 'Destination: Darkness' for one Kerry attraction which has been included as part of the world’s first exclusive ‘dark spot’ summer holiday. Kerry International Dark Sky Reserve, Skibbereen and Mayo Dark Sky Park are part of the eccentric twist on the classic Irish staycation which will see holidaymakers take in three of the darkest locations across Ireland. The Sexton Single Malt Whiskey in partnership with bespoke travel agency, Travel Matters, is offering both chauffeured and self-drive options. Carbon Dioxide levels rise rapidly The yearly peak of heat-trapping carbon dioxide in the atmosphere has surpassed yet another alarming milestone: it is now 50% greater than it was when the industrial age started. Scientists stated Monday that the average rate of rise is quicker than it has ever been. The average carbon dioxide level in May was 419.13 parts per million, according to the National Oceanic and Atmospher-
ic Administration (NOAA). According to NOAA climate scientist Pieter Tans, this is 1.82 parts per million greater than May 2020 and 50% higher than the steady pre-industrial values of 280 parts per million. "Carbon dioxide going up in a few decades like that is extremely unusual," Tans said. "For example, when the Earth climbed out of the last ice age, carbon dioxide increased by about 80 parts per million, and it took the Earth system, the
natural system, 6,000 years. We have a much larger increase in the last few decades." By comparison, it has taken only 42 years, from 1979 to 2021, to increase carbon dioxide by that same amount. "The world is approaching the point where exceeding the Paris targets and entering a climate danger zone becomes almost inevitable," said Princeton University climate scientist Michael Oppenheimer.

Getting back into exercise after pregnancy So, you have decided that today is the day you are going to go back exercising. You have just been through a physically intense and emotional time in your life so going straight back into your intense HIIT classes may not be the best idea. Getting back into exercise after pregnancy is a different process for every person and it is essential you get clearance from your doctor to return to full exercise. Once you feel you are ready, please remember to pay attention to your body and take each day one at a time. Here I discuss a few factors you may need to take into consideration as you start exercising again: TIME Getting back to the full strength you had before you became pregnant will take time. Prior to starting an exercise programme it is usually advised that you wait six weeks to return to full exercise. This is very dependent on your body, how you gave birth and how quickly you recover. I would recommend you begin with basic breathing/core exercises and pelvic floor exercises as soon as you can. This will help to give you that kick start so you can return to exercise. Take it one day at a time, exercising three times a week will be plenty to get you back on the road. BALANCE While pregnant your centre of gravity shifts. After giving birth you will have lost a lot of weight quickly and your body will need time to adjust to these changes. So, don’t be surprised that when you return to exercise your balance may be a little off! Incorporating some balance work like lunges will be of great benefit to you. INTENSITY Your body will not be able to go straight back into high-intensity exercise. You will need to train at a lower intensity and slowly increase your pace over time as you recover. In general, at the start of your journey back into exercise you should be able to hold a conversation while working out and should be about a 5/6 out of 10 on the RPE scale (Rate of Perceived Exertion). The duration of your
workout will also depend on your recovery. It should slowly be increased over time. It is essential you are in tune with your body and you do not over train. STRENGTH AND FLEXIBILITY Again, this one will take some time. Your strength more than likely has decreased a little. Your muscles may not be as flexible as they were but give yourself time and the dedication to make this improvement. As the weeks go on, if you are consistent, you will move more freely and your strength will return. GRAB A FRIEND Accountability can be one of the best ways to stay on track. You may be super eager to return to the gym but on the other hand you may find it hard to commit and ensure there is a couple of hours a week set aside for yourself. Knowing you have someone counting on you to turn up to a class will probably make you less likely to skip it. Starting a new class may also be a great way of meeting new like-minded moms. BREASTFEEDING Always ensure you are drinking plenty of water to stay hydrated and you are eating enough to maintain lactation while burning calories. You also need to ensure you are consuming enough calories so your body can recover well after exercising and continue to produce milk. Wearing a good sports bra will help with any pain you may be experiencing. As you are exercising, ask yourself, “am I extremely uncomfortable? Is recovery difficult?” If so, you may need to reduce the intensity/weight or take some extra time to recover. Remember to stay in communication with your trainer/coach, let them know how hard you can push and how you are feeling.

KNOW YOUR RIGHTS
Inheritance rights of cohabiting couples QUESTION: My partner and I have two young children together. We live together but we are not married and haven’t got around to making our wills. If something happened to one of us, would we automatically be entitled to each other’s estate? Answer: It is important for you and your partner to discuss the matter of inheritance sooner rather than later. Because you are not married, neither of you is automatically entitled to inherit anything from the other. If your partner dies without a will, you have no right to any share of their estate no matter how long you have been together. So, for example, if you live with your partner but they own the house, you could be left in very difficult circumstances if they were to die unexpectedly. If you own items jointly, these automatically pass to you and are not part of your partner’s estate. However, you might need to pay Capital Acquisitions Tax if the inheritance is above a certain threshold or value. If your partner has not made a will or has not provided for you, you may be able to apply to the courts to provide for you from your partner’s estate. This is known as the redress scheme for cohabiting couples. If you get redress by a court under this scheme, you may be exempt from paying Capital Acquisition Tax. However, making a will can ensure that proper arrangements are made
for you and your dependants and that any property is distributed in the way you both wish, subject to certain rights of spouses and children. Tax planning advice can help reduce or minimise the amount of tax your partner or family must pay. A solicitor can help you draft a will or you can draft one yourself. Fassbender admits crash was his fault Michael Fassbender has admitted responsibility for his part in a crash that caused the retirement of a rival’s car during a race in France on Sunday. He received a warning from race officials following the incident. Fassbender was contesting the Four Hours of Le Castellet at Circuit Paul Ricard, the third round of the European Le Mans series. The Proton Competition Porsche driver was fighting for sixth place with the Ferrari 488GTE of Team Iron Lynx’s Manuela Gostner. Fassbender tried an over-ambitious overtaking manoeuvre which resulted in both
cars colliding. Gostner made it back to the pits but her team was unable to repair the car and she was forced to retire from the race. “That wasn't a good action by me, I guess I misjudged it a bit. I'm really sorry for all concerned. After the strong qualifying, a lot would certainly have been possible for us on Sunday. I hope that we can make up for that in Monza,” said Fassbender. Fassbender’s crew were able to fix his Porsche 911 RSR but the repair job cost several laps. He eventually finished in eighth and last place in his class, a poor reward for a team that had qualified second. The next round is at Monza, Italy on July 11.

Possible return to campus SIMPLY BEAUTIFUL Beauty - By Jill O'Donoghue for college students
The announcement by the Department of Education this week, that the Leaving Cert results will be issued on Friday, September 3, was followed by confirmation from the Central Applications Office that CAO Round 1 offers will be issued online, four days later on Tuesday, September 7 at 2pm. This is about three weeks later than normal, although it is earlier than the 2020 dates. Coinciding with the release of these dates comes the news from Minister for Further and Higher Education, Simon Harris, that it is the priority of Government to get college students back on campus for the 2021/2022 academic year. Because of the later issue of Leaving Cert results and CAO offers, this means that First Year students will start college a couple of weeks later than those who are returning to college in Second, Third and Fourth Year. From the point of social distancing, the staggered start may be an advantage, as we will still be living with certain restrictions due to COVID-19. There are a number of contributing factors what will influence a safe and successful return to the college campus for students according to Minister Harris. They include the roll-out and take-up of vaccinations in the college-age cohort by September, the use of rapid testing on campus which has been run as a pilot in several universities this year, and a varied approach to face-to-face lectures. It is hoped that smaller classes, practicals and tutorials can be operated as before with social distancing while the larger lectures may need to be facilitated using a blended approach. It is also felt that if cafés, restaurants and bars are open everywhere else, there is no reason why they can’t open on campus. This of course is all based on vaccinations and public health guidelines.
ACCOMMODATION
A big concern for First Year students following the announcements is the fact that they will be looking for accommodation later than all other students. This is an issue every single year because when CAO offers are issued, many students get offers for colleges in locations where they have not secured accommodation. Naturally it is of particular concern to rural students and mirrors a greater societal shortage of accommodation. Minister Harris has

Make your feet look and feel great Finally it's that time of the year when we have to get our toes out and dust off the sandals and that means we have to prepare the feet for some sun and sand. Both men and women can treat themselves to pedicures!

also stated that he is bringing a proposal to Cabinet in the coming weeks to implement legislation which means that the owners of purpose-built student accommodation will only be allowed to charge rents a month in advance rather than insisting on payment of rent for half of the college year, something which has put enormous strain on students and their families over the years. So, while any kind of certainty surrounding a return to ‘normal’ college life isn’t possible, it is both hopeful and exciting for new and returning college students to be able to look forward to the next college year with the prospect of getting to enjoy a real college experience and all that has to offer.
WEBINAR
I will be hosting a free webinar for Leaving Cert parents on June 16 at 7pm on ‘How to help your son/daughter with CAO Change of Mind and other career options’ ahead of the CAO deadline on July 1. To register see links on Facebook, Twitter or Instagram: @mycareerplan or email me on info@mycareerplan.ie.
They are important for many reasons as they help to enhance the feet by having the hard skin removed, old polish taken off and new polished perfectly applied. A deluxe pedicure can improve the circulation, reduce dead skin cells, and improve your mood. It generally makes the feet look and feel amazing. One of the added benefits of a pedicure is a boost of circulation to the foot and lower legs. Poor circulation can lead to numbness in the feet or swelled joints. The effects of our jacuzzi jets, hot water with tea tree and peppermint foot soak, followed up with a lower leg and foot massage, increases the blood flow around the body to improve joint mobility and helps to reduce swelling and pain. Our feet are exposed to some harsh conditions, whether you're in high heels all day, wellie boots, hiking boots, runners etc, it's easy to forget to look after your feet. Having a pedicure should be considered a necessity not a luxury. This can help avoid a number of issues from cracked skin or painful calluses on feet to ingrown toenails. I hear from clients all the time that a pedicure
can be incredibly relaxing and reduce stress. There is a blissful effect from the massage but it is also a great way to set time aside for you. It's a great way to feel pampered and relaxed with the added effect that the toe paint is a constant reminder of the feel-good factor long after the appointment. The treatment is incredibly relaxing and highly recommended for everyone, old and young, male and female. We soak the feet in hot water with jacuzzi jets; this helps to soften the skin straight away. Our pedicure chair includes a back massager, then the nails are cut, filed and buffed. A nail drill is used if required to reduce thickened toenails. Cuticles are then trimmed, pushed back and old polish removed. The exfoliator is applied on the entire lower leg and foot, followed with foot rasping on the stubborn hard skin. A massage is performed on the lower leg and foot. You can then choose from a wide selection of OPI polishes, or Gelish UV polish can be applied for a longer lasting effect. Finally, pedicures help promote your mental health. Just like massages, pedicures can help reduce stress. They are very relaxing and boost your confidence because they make your feet look and feel great. • For more information or to book an appointment please call Jill on 064 6632966.

Price and value are not the same thing To understand markets, you first have to realise that 'price' and 'value' are not the same thing. The major indexes continued to trade relatively flat in recent days. The vast majority of stocks struggled to eke out gains as a lack of clear market catalysts kept institutional investors on the sidelines, while retail traders fuelled the ongoing meme stocks rally. As social media hype pushes the likes of AMC, GameStop and Bed Bath & Beyond 'to the moon', the crypto market continues to trade in the opposite direction, with all major crypto names recording double-digit losses early in the week.
THE SHORT SQUEEZE IS BACK
Earlier this year, GameStop saw its share price run from $19 to $483 as the Reddit retail traders banded together to punish the Wall Street speculators. In recent weeks, the short squeeze is back in fash-
ion. The new king of meme stocks is AMC Entertainment. Recently on the brink of bankruptcy, the movie theatre chain's stock is up more than 2,000% this year after another rollercoaster week. While this phenomenon is hard to comprehend at times, in simple terms, the Internet has brought forth the age of virality, and the stock market is not immune. Younger generations who grew up on the Internet are now having a significant impact on specific companies. Their risk tolerance seems to be much higher than previous generations, and their willingness to band together to support a viral trend knows no bounds. While these short-term individual stock surges may not significantly impact markets over the longer term, the meme stock craze is here to stay as the gamifi-
cation of investing becomes a powerful force in an era of social media dominance. All this speculation raises a lot of questions from investors. Nervous onlookers wonder if markets are broken, worried about how such 'mindless risk' can undermine the validity of the market as the 'meme stock vigilantes' blatantly disregard traditional valuation metrics. All this recent 'mispricing' has highlighted one of the most common investing misconceptions. To understand markets, you first have to realise that 'price' and 'value' are not the same thing. Value is driven by cash flows, growth and risk. Of course, you can disagree about what those cash flows look like or how they are calculated, but the fundamental drivers of value remain the same. Price, on the other hand, is simple economics 101. Demand vs Supply. What drives demand and supply is typically mood and momentum. As a result, stock prices do not have to make rational sense at any one moment in time as they are driven by a myriad of human emotions.
MOOD AND MOMENTUM
For me, the current market conditions are reflective of a pricing market being driven by mood and momentum. That

isn't to say that this is necessarily a bad thing. Markets will always reflect human behaviour in some form, and sometimes this behaviour will be more pronounced as price and value push in different directions. This recent price volatility doesn't mean you have to change to momentum and memes when selecting your next investment. While the "Fear of Missing Out" (FOMO) can be unbearable at times, the truth is, the value factors of cash flows, growth and risk are what ultimately drive markets over the longer term. Guidance for reopening your business It is heartening to see so many businesses reopen in recent weeks. I hope that the progress can continue so that we see the remaining hospitality businesses back in action shortly. While there is a raft of information from Government and HSE sources, this week I will briefly outline some items to remember from an insurance perspective. Contact your insurance advisor before you reopen: You may have reduced cover on your property or liability cover over the closure period and it is important to update this prior to opening your doors. Remember you may have staff on site in advance of reopening so it is vital that your policy covers them. Review your Health and Safety Statement: This should be a living document and be available to review as needs be. Your COVID-19 safety measures should be included and all employees should
sign that they have read and understand the statement. Obtain Return to Work forms: Before any of the team return to work they will need to complete a return to work form and partake in any necessary training. These documents can be found at www.hse.ie. Outdoor seating: If you are planning outdoor seating on public owned areas you will need to obtain a permit from Kerry County Council and your insurance policy will need to issue a specific indemnity to the Council. The Council will also require a minimum limit of indemnity of €6.5 million, which is standard practice for all State bodies. If this is your first time undertaking outdoor hospitality then you
should include this in your Health and Safety Statement and do a full risk assessment. Water systems: Put in place control measures to avoid the potential for legionnaire’s disease before your premises reopens. Inspect plant and equipment: This includes lifts, ventilation and kitchen duct systems and generators. Ensure that your inspection certificates are up to date for any lifting plant including passenger and goods lifts. Identify and display appropriate warning and safety signage for your premises. Cleaning: Arrange the appropriate cleaning of your buildings and contents. External cleaning contractors should provide you with a method statement, proof of insurance and when finished written confirmation that the cleaning has been

completed to the agreed standard. The above is not exhaustive but there is a wealth of information available on www. hse.ie and www.hsa.ie for reopening. Finally, the very best of luck to all the hospitality businesses getting back to what they do best. All we need now is that heatwave!

From November all homes will be revalued
The property talk over the course of the past week has revolved around the recent announcements relating to property tax.
The Local Property Tax (LPT) is an annual self-assessed tax charged on the market value of all residential properties in Ireland. It came into effect on July 1, 2013 and is collected by the Revenue Commissioners. Under plans announced at Cabinet this week, homes built after 2013 will now face inclusion in the Local Property Tax. Up until now the Local Property Tax was levied on property valuations from May 1, 2013. Homes that were built since that date have so far not been liable to the tax as they do not have a valuation dating
from then. This is now about to change which will bring approximately 100,000 homes into the Property Tax net. The new valuation date is to be November of this year with every home in the country liable for the tax by 2022. It has been reported that 60% of home owners will not be paying any more than they already do, while 10% will see a decrease. It is estimated the change will raise €560 million annually. Government have advised that from November of this year all homes will be revalued, but it would be done in such a way that it recognises the affordability challenges facing many families. Despite the fact that many properties would
have significantly increased in value since 2013, a change in the calculation of band widths will ensure properties do not jump up any more than one value band. There is also a change to the system that redistributes some of the property tax outside the local authority limits. Currently, 80% of the monies raised are retained in the area, with 20% sent to local authorities. From 2023 it is understood that one hundred percent will be retained in the local authority with central Government making up any shortfall. There is no need for homeowners to do anything just yet as Revenue have advised they will contact homeowners directly once the changes have been passed into law.

Last chance for players to put their hands up | By Adam Moynihan
Tyrone clash will be Kerry’s final outing before the championship NATIONAL LEAGUE DIV 1 SEMI-FINAL
_________________________________________________________________________
Kerry v Tyrone Saturday at 5pm Fitzgerald Stadium Live on TG4 Technically, if they defeat Tyrone at home on Saturday, Kerry will retain the Division 1 title for the first time since 1974. Of course, considering how disrupted and restructured they have been due to the pandemic, both this year’s and last year’s competitions will stand out like a sore thumb in the history books. The traditional final was scrapped in 2020 because of time constraints, meaning Kerry were crowned champions based
on the seven round robin games. This time around victory over Tyrone will only secure a share of the spoils as the final cannot be staged if Kerry or Donegal are meant to be playing in it. It could well be a sticky quiz question many years from now: who were the first team to complete the one-and-a-half-ina-row?
LAST CHANCE
Whatever about the importance of the result and the merits of winning half a league title, Saturday’s fixture will represent a last chance for a number of Kerry players who are still hoping to put their hands up for a starting berth for the championship. Kieran Fitzgibbon looks set to continue between the sticks with Shane Ryan out through injury. It is not clear whether
or not the latter will be available for the Clare game in two weeks’ time so Fitzgibbon, who made his debut against Galway just four weeks ago, might well be making his championship bow a lot sooner than he would have expected. Tadhg Morley’s appeal against the controversial red card he received against Roscommon was rejected so he will miss the Tyrone match, with Jason Foley likely to deputise once again at full back. Tom O’Sullivan returned from injury last time out and the All-Star-calibre defender will be eager to get some more minutes under his belt. Captain Paul Murphy and Gavin White were used sparingly against the Rossies but both should start in the half back line, probably alongside ever-present centre back Gavin Crowley. At midfield, David Moran hasn’t really
been moving all too well so one would imagine that he will need to show Kerry’s management team something sooner rather than later. Diarmuid O’Connor, meanwhile, is coming into his own and his clubmate, Jack Barry, should also be available for selection having narrowly missed out on the Roscommon match. In the forwards, Dara Moynihan and Seán O’Shea should return to the half forward line with deadeye shooters Killian Spillane and Tony Brosnan competing for the No. 14 jersey. Encouragingly, spectators will be in attendance for the first time since March 1 of last year. However, as the capacity is limited to just 100, the tickets will go to families and partners of the players and management team, with some also being set aside for sponsors.

Ní Mhuircheartaigh hits 4-6 as Kerry set up semi date Louise stars against Wexford but Kingdom rocked by news of Síofra O’Shea’s injury The good news for Kerry is that star forward Louise Ní Mhuircheartaigh is on form. The bad news is that they will need to plan for this weekend’s league semi-final – and, unfortunately, the rest of their season – without Síofra O’Shea after the Southern Gaels player sustained a serious knee injury in last weekend’s victory over Wexford. O’Shea tore her ACL a mere two minutes into Saturday’s match at the Fitzgerald Stadium and her forced absence will come as a significant blow to Declan Quill and Darragh Long as they look to steer their side to promotion. As it turned out, losing the talented centre forward had little bearing on that Wexford encounter; Kerry romped to a 19-point win in their final group game with experienced corner forward Ní Mhuircheartaigh on fire from the off. The Corca Dhuibhne player kicked 3-5 in the first half alone as Kerry built up a 4-8 to 2-3 lead, and when she added a further 1-1 in the first five minutes of the second, her managers called her ashore. The hosts eventually ran out 6-14 to 2-7 winners against intermediate opposition with Andrea Murphy, Niamh Ní Chonchúir and substitute Emma Dineen all catching the eye. The unlimited subs rule might be a nightmare for journalists trying to keep track of the frankly crazy amount of comings and goings, but it did allow Quill and Long to give all their players a game. The emphatic nature of the result will no doubt breed confidence but the quality of the opposition must also be taken into account. After three straight defeats, Wexford could well be heading for Division 3. They’ll be up against Tyrone in the relegation playoff. There are also plenty of things for Kerry to work on. A number of attacks broke down, or at least were slowed down, due to some sloppy passing, particularly at close range. If the passes go to hand Kerry will be in much
NATIONAL LEAGUE DIV 2 SEMI-FINAL

Kerry v Monaghan Saturday (Time and Venue TBC) better shape moving forward. As for their opponents in the last four, Monaghan, they come into this tie on the back of back-to-back wins over Armagh (2-11 to 1-13) and Tyrone (5-15 to 1-11). These results along with the opening day defeat to eventual pool winners Cavan left them in second spot in Division 2B, which was, to all intents and purposes, the northern group. The last time Kerry played Monaghan they prevailed on a scoreline of 3-10 to 2-9 and we could be set for a fairly close match-up again this time around. The Kingdom’s primary objective for 2021 was to achieve promotion to Division 1 and they will need to account for Monaghan and the winners of Cavan and Meath (Saturday at 1pm, Kingspan Breffni) to do so. Either Tipperary or Westmeath will be coming in the opposite direction as they face off in the Division 1 relegation playoff. At the other end of D1, Cork play Donegal in one semi-final (Saturday at 3pm) and Mayo take on defending champions Dublin in the other (Saturday at 5.15pm). The former will be shown live on TG4 while the latter will be streamed on the TG4 YouTube page. The Kerry hurlers are also in action this weekend but their final round fixture away to Carlow is of little consequence. Offaly have already secured the Division 2A title so despite their 22-point mauling of Wicklow last weekend, the best Fintan O’Connor and co. can hope for is to consolidate their position in second. In reality, one eye will now be on the McDonagh Cup first round match against Down, which takes place in Tralee on the weekend of June 26/27.

Keane should know 11 of his 15 starters As Kerry ramp up towards the championship, Eamonn Fitzgerald gives his assessment of their preparations to date One certainly learns more from defeat that from victory, so what has Peter Keane and his management team learned from the 2020 debacle? In fairness to the Kerry management, they have opened up the panel, brought some new players into the fold. They will bring them along hoping they will be in contention for places in the resurrection, which occurs when they start the 2021 championship campaign with a home game versus Clare in the Fitzgerald Stadium. Tomorrow, Kerry will meet Tyrone in the NFL semi-final. Their league title is at stake. Too many supporters give them no credit for winning the 2020 National League. If Kerry win and Dublin win as expected, there won’t be a league final and it will be a shared title. That is disappointing for the players. The GAA should have done better and ensured they a final had to be played.
IDEAL PREPARATION
Peter Keane and the Kerry players have had the ideal preparation for the championship. Three competitive league games so far and one more tomorrow. The Kerry selectors used the matches wisely, trying out as many players as possible to see which combination will deliver success. Injuries forced their hands for all games and some established players were rested. That gave game time to so many players. That huge win over Galway in Tralee was a great morale booster. They ran up a big score, inflicting a 22-point defeat on Galway, the worst ever margin of defeat for the Westerners. It was magical stuff, Kerry going at them from the throw-in and imposing their game on hapless Galway. In my report I said that one swallow does not make a summer, but that one swallow was most welcome and hopefully the rest of the flight would follow to make a summer of delight in Kerry. The eagerly awaited clash with the Dubs did not disappoint. Kerry were like the

proverbial curate’s egg, good and bad in patches. Leaking three early goals was ominous. Had we learned anything about basic defending? Dublin went seven points clear and looked odds-on to make it a 10-point win, but Kerry responded magnificently hitting six unanswered points. It looked all up when Dublin converted a late penalty, but David Clifford came to the rescue in the dying minutes of the game to snatch a draw. Lessons to be learned against the top opposition. Kerry forwards are very good, but the defence is still the Achilles heel. Roscommon proved as tough as ever, but Kerry competed well. Still that goal leakage at the back was a worry. Diarmuid O’Connor improved steadily and will start at midfield v Clare. Tomorrow’s very competitive match v Tyrone will tell us more.
games of 2021 and that is encouraging. The ball is going in much quicker and sooner so that the inside forwards are brought into play. They score freely and once you get the ball inside 50 metres defenders are quite likely to foul. With Seán O’Shea that’s a pointed free in most cases. I’m not suggesting that the Kerry defenders should send the ball anywhere out of their way. Leave that to supporters of Charlton. Get it out long and accurate setting up an attack, instead of lateral passing and not progressing. I expect that the Kerry selectors have pencilled in 11 places and the discussion really is for the remaining starting four. They will also will be very mindful of seven other subs. The starting 15 will not be the 15 that will finish. Such is the intensity of the modern game.
STARTING 15
Shane Ryan has been out injured for this league and must be doubtful for the early stages of the championship. Kieran Fitzgibbon has been catapulted into goalkeeping duties and he has performed quite well, especially playing behind a much-maligned defence. The goalkeeper is just not alone a ball stopper, but he is called into play once the opposition start moving out the ball from the other end of the field. He can see possible developments long before
I expect at this stage Peter Keane and his selectors have 11 positions filled to start v Clare. They haven’t a surplus of class players and injuries will deprive them of a full hand. I’ve still to see the Peter Keane gameplan, his stamp on this team. Every manager in any team sport wishes his/her team to play in a certain matter. The defensive tactics in Cork failed. Thankfully, that has changed in the three league
DEFENCE
his defenders do. He can see the runner, gaps opening and real danger, before defender do. They are too taken up with marking their own men. The keeper is the eyes and ears of the defenders and must be sure and vocal. It will take time for him to assert his authority and the same goes for the kick-outs. Understandably, he hasn’t always succeeded in picking out a fellow player, be it short or long. That will come. Even Cluxton had to learn. The defence has been much-maligned and leaking so many goals substantiates that argument. In their defence they are often at sixes and sevens with extra men galloping through, because other players let their men sally up field unmarked. However, I cannot understand why this sextet - and it could be any six - do not realise that their first duty is to mark their own men. Too often they stand off their opponents and gift them the initiative. These are elite players who have been coached in the art of defence in their own clubs since they were juveniles. Too often, some but not all, do not seem to understand that there really is no defined tackle in Gaelic football, but you can get in close. Use your hands strategically and prevent the attacker scoring or laying it off to a fellow player. That’s all legitimate and there is no need to concede a free. I could name several players at club level who operate this defensive tactic so successfully. Great Kerry backs of the past did it. I think of players such as Paudie Lynch and Mike McCarthy. The present Kerry defenders are plenty fit enough. They need to be near their direct opponents and be pro-active instead of being reactive. Rarely is there need for a long inaccurate clearance. A hand pass, or preferably an accurate punt kick will set the Kerry forwards in motion. The Kerry full back line should not be drawn 50 yards from goal and certainly not sprinting out as a link man into the opposition’s territory. How often have we seen it by some of these defenders?
51
11.6.2021 Mind the house, don’t leave the goalkeeper exposed and the goal leakage will dry up, or curtailed at worst. I also feel that Gavin Crowley should not be lured into up field sallies. He has a very onerous job. He must mind his man and also mark space. Tim Kennelly and Mick Morris before him were not classy players but were highly effective centre-backs. No yawning gaps to allow Brian Fenton, Eoin Murchan, or Jack McCaffrey exploit this this tempting mortal sin. Primary duty for wing backs Paul Murphy and Gavin White is to mark their own man and when the two or three opportunities arise in the game they have the explosive pace to go up field to score or assist in a score. If that run breaks down it is not as serious, as if it
happened to a centre back exposing the middle for those Dublin invaders.
MIDFIELD
Midfield has been a problem area for Kerry. David Moran has given Kerry great service over many years, but I contend that he should not be on the starting 15. He may well be on the finishing 15. I like Diarmuid O’Connor. Big, strong, mobile, well able to score when the opportunity arises, he has a great engine and has youth on his side. Who should partner him? Jack Barry is in the frame to start, but not Tommy Walsh. I also expect Kerry to have a Plan B. My preference is to include Seán O’Shea and Paudie Clifford in the half-forward line, one of them centrally and both

tasked with helping out at midfield. The older Clifford is mobile, brave and eager and could do a very effective smash and grab possession ploy. He should start. Now he is more even-tempered than he has been in the past. He can open a defence route one and knows when to deliver to the full forward line. I feel that we can get more out of Seán O’Shea. I hope Peter Keane doesn’t fall back on the Cork gambit where the half-forward line’s role was to go back to their own half-back line helping out. Tracking back is important, but that last-ditch ploy inevitably draws out the inside forward line. Wouldn’t David Clifford’s marker love to see him 70 yards from goal? Even Kerry’s jewel will not score from that position. Again, send in the ball quickly to Kerry’s best scorers, Clifford
and whoever is with him. Paul Geaney, Paudie Clifford, Tony Brosnan and Killian Spillane are in the frame to score. You can have all the fitness in the world, elaborate game plans and astute use of the bench, but those ingredients alone will not propel Kerry forward in a realistic bid for Sam 2021. Pride in the geansaí will oil the winning machine. Over to you the present Kerry players, whichever 15 starts v Clare, then Tipperary followed by Cork. Bryan McMahon the former Kerry player and songster was spot on with the importance of dúchas and tradition. “You cannot box or bottle it, nor grasp it in your hand, But pride of race and love of place inspire a love of land.”
David Moran has given Kerry great service over many years, but I contend that he should not be on the starting 15. He may well be on the finishing 15
