Killarney plans to turn purple | By Michelle Crean Killarney is to celebrate retaining its Purple Flag by holding a weekend of colourful celebrations next week.

Shocking daylight brawl on High Street Shocked locals and tourists witnessed a five-person brawl just off a busy Killarney street in broad daylight at lunchtime yesterday (Thursday). | By Sean Moriarty Four men and one woman were involved in a violent fracas on Barry’s Lane - just off High Street - at around 1pm.

An alert passer-by immediately called the Gardai but one of the men ran off down High Street towards the town centre before they arrived. Gardai rushed to the scene and found a young woman in a distressed state rip-

ping at her clothing. Another man, who appeared drunk, was shouting “this is my town”. The other two people shut themselves into an apartment building on the street before Gardai arrived. Killarney Garda confirmed that a male and female were arrested on public order offences. They believe the fight started in a nearby pub.

The accolade, which recognises excellence in safety, vibrancy and diversity of the evening and night-time economy of the town, will be celebrated over weekend of October 18 – 20. Killarney Purple Flag Working Group have acquired Purple Flag stickers which will be circulated to businesses in the purple flag area, and are seeking the support of businesses by displaying them in their premises. On Saturday afternoon, October 19, the Purple Flag mascot will be out and about around the town, mingling on the streets and calling to shops and businesses. “We would like to seek the support of all hotels and business owners in the town over this weekend, the following being a number of ideas which could be carried out, including lighting premises in purple, decorating windows in purple, Purple Friday or Saturday where staff dress in purple, prominent buildings/cultural/heritage/businesses illuminated purple and purple themed events serving of non-alcoholic purple cocktails,” the group said.

Rugby club plans new diversity programme | By Michelle Crean Diversity and inclusion is the name of the game – a rugby game that is – as one club plans a brand new programme to make everyone feel right at home. Tomorrow morning (Saturday) at 10am, Killarney Rugby Club will roll out their ‘Diversity and Inclusion’ initiative. There, they plan to hand a brand new anti-racist poster, which has #playtogether written in 13 different languages, to a representative from the Killarney Immigrant Support Centre – and all are welcome to attend. “Killarney Rugby wants to be a club

where no matter where you come, from or what language you speak, you'll feel right at home,” Liam Murphy, PRO of the Minis, told the Killarney Advertiser this week. “In light of recent racist events in the community, the club feels that it must take an active stance and show immigrant and refugee communities that such behaviour does not reflect Irish values.” He said the new initiative will be a great opportunity to back up words with public actions. “We’re trying to appeal to all people to give it a try and get involved. It’s the next natural progression,” he said.

Storm brings rare bird to Kerry The aftermath of last week’s Storm Lorenzo resulted in a very rare South American bird being swept into Kerry.

Local parishioners were hit with another bombshell over the weekend when it was announced that the number of weekly Masses in Killarney will further be reduced.

North American land-birds showing up in Ireland over the past two weeks due to the series of hurricanes and storms in the Atlantic disrupting their southbound migration from North America to South America and diverting them to Western Europe,” said Niall Keogh of the Irish Rare Birds Committee. “So far this autumn we've had eight Redeyed Vireos, one Black-and-white Warbler [on Inishbofin, third Irish sighting], one Baltimore Oriole [on Achill Island, fourth Irish sighting] and one Common Nighthawk [in Ballymena, third Irish record] across the island of Ireland. I sus-

pect more North American land-birds will be found over the coming weeks given the weather we are having.” While Storm Lorenzo is the most-likely reason the bird arrived in Ireland, it is also possible he hitched a lift on a trans-Atlantic ship. “The bird appears to be quite emaciated so no wonder it died. Not much muscle structure left on the breast. It must have just had enough energy to make landfall,” added Keogh. The bird has been preserved by Mr O’Donoghue and he is awaiting instructions from the Irish Natural History Museum.

Bus station to reopen today | By Sean Moriarty Bus Eireann has confirmed to the Killarney Advertiser this week that the customer waiting area in Killarney bus station will reopen today (Friday). Last Saturday ‘The Coffee Bus’ café and shop, at the Bus Eireann stop adjacent to the Outlet Centre, closed after 20 years in business. The coffee shop was adjacent to a waiting area and automatic ticket dispensing machines. But now that the café is closed

Further cuts to Killarney Masses

| By Sean Moriarty A male Least Bittern, a member of the Heron family, was found in a distressed state in local man John O’Donoghue’s yard in Farranfore on Monday. It is the first sighting of such a specimen in Ireland and only the tenth ever in the geographic area known as the Western Palearctic that covers all of Europe, North African countries and some Gulf States since records began in 1900. Despite his best efforts John was unable to keep the bird alive and he died within 30 minutes of being found. John contacted another local man, Anthony O’Connor, whose brother John is an ornithologist who used to keep finches and other birds at his Ardfert home. They were unable to identify the bird but contacted Bird Watch Ireland who confirmed it was indeed a Least Bittern and that it was the first sighting of such a bird in Ireland. The migratory population of Least Bittern breeds mostly in eastern North America, wintering in Central America, The Caribbean, northern South America. The closest previous sightings to Ireland were one each in the Azores and Iceland. An American Green Heron was present at Schull, County Cork from October 11 to 13, 2005 and was later relocated in Anglesey, Wales. “While the finding of this bird is a surprise, it has a supporting cast of rare

customers could no longer access the waiting lobby and ticket machine. Bus Eireann was advising passengers to pay the driver on the bus or pre-book online. However, the company reversed this decision on Wednesday and confirmed that the facility will re-open today (Friday), but the ticket office would not be manned. Instead, customers can use the ticket machines in the waiting area. “The retail unit within the outlet, which was operated by an independent retailer remained open until last weekend at which point it closed. It is anticipated that the closure of the retail unit will be

temporary and CIE’s property department are actively seeking a new tenant,” said a Bus Eireann spokesperson. “The customer waiting area, which is contained within the retail unit will reopen from this Friday.” The closure of the Bus Eireann ticket office was criticised by tourism and business leaders in Killarney this week. They said it is not a good image to give visitors. “There should be customer service available to tourists and customers alike for a town our size,” Paul Sherry, President of Killarney Chamber of Tourism and Commerce, told the Killarney Advertiser. “I

The new schedule will come into effect on the weekend of November 2 and 3. The news comes following Bishop Ray Browne’s recent decision to axe a fulltime priest in the Kilcummin parish, which caused widespread anger in the area. “After the clerical changes during the summer, we are now one priest less, and that has put considerable strain on the celebration of weekend Masses,” said a Killarney Pastoral Area statement. "We cannot sustain the current schedule. While we are aware of the change that has happened for the priests of the area, we realise too the great change and sadness that this will mean for parishioners affected, and in this we ask for your understanding and support. We have only been able to manage so far thanks to the generosity of the retired priests, but it would be deeply unfair to ask their sustained support to continue the current weekend Mass schedule.” am told it is a temporary arrangement while refurbishment work is carried out, and Bus Eireann is doing its best in the interim.” The ticket office has been unmanned since 2017 but Bus Eireann do employ staff to run it during the busy summer months. “It was closed as part of a previous restructuring in the organisation, although it was manned this year during the busier tourist months,” added the Bus Eireann spokesperson. TD Danny Healy-Rae said that he is pleased that Bus Eireann has confirmed that they have now made alternative arrangements and intend to reopen Killarney Bus Station, from Friday.

There’s spooky goings on in one local school Students organise Halloween Haunted Hall | By Michelle Crean With a 159 year history - it comes as no surprise that there’s some ghostly goings on in one Killarney school – and locals can experience it first-hand very soon. Students in St Brendan’s College have a creepy feeling that October 25, 26 and 27 will be a Spooktacular – and the school is allowing the public access in to witness it first-hand from 6-9pm! Transition Year students are currently building a Haunted Hall with a maze through the courtyard – and the 15 to 20 minute school tour will be suitable for those aged eight upwards. Visitors will be guaranteed a screamingly good time - as they’ll be greeted by Spencer Hawthorn at the main door – and who knows who they’ll meet along the old school corridors.

In what is the first Halloween themed event for the school, it promises to be scary and fun, explained teacher Carol Hickson. “TYs, First, Second and Fifth Years are putting the tour together,” Carol told the Killarney Advertiser. “We’re embracing the age of the school. It was built in 1860, just after the Famine. Visitors will meet the headmaster and a few creepy characters along the way. Spencer, their tour guide will bring them on a tour of the school into some places they shouldn’t go to and they’ll meet a creepy headmaster and some scary staff.” The public can purchase tickets for €5 each or a family ticket of five for €20 from the school on 064 6631021, she added. “Be careful what doors you open!”

Ulster Bank’s Killarney branch will open its doors for a special fundraiser in aid of HeartBeat Killarney, a voluntary support group which aims to help people who’ve suffered heart disease, a stroke or a cardiac event return to living as full as life as possible. On Saturday, October 26 colleagues in the branch are hosting a home expert information event, where interested homeowners and home buyers can speak to local professionals, including building contractors, engineers, architects and interior designers, in exchange for a discretionary donation to the charity. The 30-40 minute slots will take place throughout the day from 9.30-4pm and should be booked in advance by emailing justin.u.healy@ulsterbank.com. Government delivers uninspiring Budget Free GP care for children under eight and free dental care for under 6s was announced by Minister for Finance Paschal Donohoe as he delivered his Budget 2020 to Dáil Éireann on Tuesday afternoon. Government changes to taxes and spending as part of its general economic and fiscal outlook for 2020 included minimum wage to rise by 30cent from €9.80 to €10.10 - but delayed until March in a no-deal Brexit scenario, zero rate on electric vehicles extended to 2020 and excise duty on a packet of 20 cigarettes increased by 50 cent (including VAT). Overall, there wasn’t a substantial amount of noteworthy changes in this year’s budget. However, below is a summary of the main points of interest put together by Brian Dineen of Orchid Accountants & Statutory Audit Firm, Orchid House, Upper Park Road, Killarney.

KEY POINTS 1. Income tax

• In relation to income tax, in other words, personal tax, there wasn’t many changes that will help people. The minimum wage to increase to €10.10 that was discussed has deferred due to the threat of a no deal Brexit. • However, there has been a €150 in-

crease in the Earned Income Credit for self-employed people to €1,500. • The home carer credit has also seen an increase to €1,600 from €1,500. • Employment and Investment Incentive (EIIS) has been extended and improved. An increase in the annual limit on investments to €250,000, or €500,000 for investments with a maturity of 10 years or greater. Further to this, from October 2019, the full 40% income tax relief will be available in the year of investment rather than the previous arrangement whereby 30% was available at time of investment with 10% available after four years. • There is still 0% BIK on electric vehicles extended to 2022 in an attempt to promote the use of electric vehicles as a company vehicle.

2. Indirect Taxation & reliefs • In an attempt to tackle the current issues of air pollution and global warming, there has been an increase in the carbon

tax which is up €6 to €26 per tonne and applies from 12 midnight on October 8, 2019. To put this into perspective, this will mean an increase of 1-2c per litre for petrol/diesel, an extra €1.44 per 40kg coal bag and an additional 31c per briquette bail for the average person on their fuel costs. • The diesel surcharge that was introduced last year is going to be replaced with a nitrogen oxide emissions-based charge. Will apply to all cars registering from January 1, 2020. • Relief for VRT on Hybrid vehicles extended to 2020. • A diesel rebate scheme for hauliers is intended to be introduced, details at the moment however are scare. The minister has said further details will be included in the Finance Bill. • A relief, capped at €50,000 per year from the amount of betting duty payable by independent bookmakers and betting exchanges, will be introduced. • There was an announcement of €13 million for the warmer homes scheme. This is to provide free energy efficiency upgrade to those households who are deemed or considered at risk of energy poverty.

3. Brexit contingency plans • €1.2 billion has been announced and put aside in the event of a no deal Brexit. The Government has broken down how these funds will be distributed. The breakdown is: €220 million deployed for immediate use in mitigating the effects of a no deal Brexit. • €650 million allocated for enterprise, agriculture and tourism, mainly to assist those whose businesses are worst affected. • €85 million allocated specifically to beef farmers, €14 million for the fishing industry, €6 million for livestock and the mushroom industry and food/drinks will receive €5 million. • €365 million is planned to be provided for social protection expenditure benefit, and €45 million to assist people to transition to new work. • It seems to be a case that all of the above breakdowns are dependent on a no deal Brexit.

4. Social Welfare • The living alone allowance has seen a €5 increase. While not substantial, it will be welcomed by some. • Qualified child payments have been increased by €3 for over 12s and €2 for under 12s. • Fuel allowance increased by €2 per week. • The Christmas bonus for all social welfare recipients in 2019 will be 100%.

5. Property • Stamp duty on commercial property increased by 1.5% to 7.5% with effect from October 9. There may be some transitional measures for transactions in progress. • Help to Buy scheme for first time buyers has been extended to the end of 2021.

6. Capital Acquisitions Tax • The threshold for gifts and inheritances within category A (Generally parents to children) has been increased from €320,000 to €335,000. This means anything received up until the threshold of €335,000 is tax free. This applies from October 9.

Bernadette Randles, Chair of the IHF Kerry branch, said the increase in VAT from 9% to 13.5% has seriously undermined Irish tourism’s international competitiveness and the ability of tourism enterprises such as hotels to re-invest in their business and local economy.

“This week’s budget is received with mixed emotions. The missed opportunity to reinstate the 9% VAT rate is a shame and an example again of the short sightedness of the finance department to not take a proactive approach,” she told the Killarney Advertiser. “The horizons for tourism are concerning and a proactive approach with the VAT rate would have been the smart move for employment and stability in the hospitality sector. A reactive approach to an inevitably challenging year will be too little too late. We support 270,000 jobs across the country and we are a great example of

Fuel and carbon tax increases

Minister for Finance Paschal Donohoe has announced a €6 increase in the price of carbon as a first step towards the Government's commitment of increasing the price of carbon from €20 to €80 a tonne by 2030. Mr Donohoe said it is the Government's intention - and his ambition - to increase this steadily to meet the 2030 target. The increase came into effect from midnight on Tuesday for motor fuel, but the increase to other fuels will be delayed until May 2020 - after the winter heating season. The increase is expected to raise €90m

in 2020. All of this will be ring-fenced to fund new climate action measures. “In the context of both an already depressed new car market and the likely impact of Brexit, there is a real fear that car sales will further deteriorate that will only slow down the renewal of Ireland’s car fleet, which is vital in our attempt to drive down emissions,” Society of the Irish Motor Industry, Director General, Brian Cooke, said. “In this regard, SIMI is relieved that the Minister has not increased VRT for new cars in Budget 2020.” While this announcement will help Ireland reduce its carbon footprint, it punishes people in rural areas who rely on cars to get around, and offered no real incentives to buy zero emission cars or

to put in place infrastructure to charge them. “Given the proposed evolution to electric vehicles we would like to see increased revenue from the carbon tax ring-fenced to subsidise the purchase of EVs and fund quick chargers for retail sites to assist this change,” said David Blevings, media spokesperson the Irish Petrol Retailers Association. The same applies to the road haulage sector, and business leaders have criticised the approach. "This Budget focused on delivering increased taxation with no support for industry to counteract the penal charges it faces,” said Aidan Flynn, General Manager of Freight Transport Association Ireland.

I say this in the light of statements by prominent people this week and the results of the Junior Cert too. Down in Kenmare, Bernard Looney, the fifth child of a small ambitious farmer and his elegant wife has been named head of global company British Petroleum (BP). His school principal was on local radio lamenting the decline in today’s education which he said is all about "results". A change from the days when 48-year-old Bernard went to secondary school. Gareth Power said that back then results were important but education was also about development of personality and getting on with people. Bernard’s brother Tony, a courteous philosophical man who has two engineering construction companies in Cork echoed Power. There was too much to do at home so Bernard was never going to be too academic. And his style was to find solutions – and he would eschew angry confrontation. Millionaire businessman Jerry Kennelly has been giving out too about the

system and how parents are investing all their wealth in often unsuitable education courses. Jerry, as usual, comes from how much money you can earn – but he has a point. There is however a third elephant in the room which no-one is talking about, and which once again is underlined by this year’s Junior Cert results out this week. Yet again girls have outshone boys in the Junior Cert., as the current results driven system suits ambitious girls. The pendulum in education has swung and add to that we have a complete lack of gender balance in teaching which must make you wonder has it swung too far and just who is setting the curriculum and for whom? It must be, 90 percent of teachers now are female in some schools. Boys are being lost, and for both genders there seems less and less time for any kind of independent-mindedness or debate. Instead it is all rote learning and assertiveness. The higher levels banning speakers and locking out other opinions are

Debate in the classroom and on the street is shut down and shouted down by assertive young people who will broker no viewpoint other than their own - and they are getting younger and younger. Levels of anxiety among the shouting children caught up in these climate change protests are off the Richter Scale, teachers up the country tell me. The lack of perspective is worrying whole swathes of feelings and valid opinions are being driven underground and into extreme positions, much better than the Roman Catholic Church ever managed to do. The structure has strayed too far from the ideal of Plato’s academy and of that old word “colloquy” - debate and thrashing things out, passionately if you like, but from reasoned positions to arrive at the truth and land on solid ground. County Council is subject to Government approval - which is not yet in place. The timeline for construction, following the appointment of a contractor, is approximately three years. The total scheme budget is estimated at €280 million. I threw the question at the Department of Public Expenditure on Monday - the ones to approve it - and was redirected to the Department of Transport. Everyone was waiting for Budget Day, it appears. Danny Healy-Rae TD, who has been "extremely concerned" about what he sees as a pull back on public projects in this region, also raised it on Tuesday in his budget speech and says he got no reply. He worries the bypass, along with the Kilcummin sewerage plans, may have all been mothballed and the Government are not admitting it.

This is a real bread and butter issue. And it took someone to come up from Waterville to talk about bewildered tourists as well people from Cahersiveen to Killarney having nowhere to go for information or tickets. But “Storming Norma” is unlikely to be the only Norma on the ticket if Fianna Fail people in Tralee have their way. The withdrawal of Toireasa Ferris and the selection of Tralee town native, solicitor Pa Daly, as the Sinn Fein candidate in the next General Election to retain the party seat, has thrown up conundrums for the other main parties in Kerry. Speculation is rife about additions and changes because Daly will have Tralee all to himself unless they add poll topper - last year’s Mayor of Kerry, Norma Foley, is the thinking. Republicanism in Tralee crosses all party lines, and local boy Daly could theoretically harvest votes across FF and FG in the county town. Waterville’s Cllr Norma Moriarty, is based at the extreme southern and least populated end of Kerry. Killarney too is without a town candidate or representative. Director of Elections for Fianna Fail, the current Mayor of Kerry, Killarney Councillor Cllr Niall Kelleher, said that he believes a three-candidate strategy is best for the party in Kerry. However, he believes that “geographically” the strategy should be to add himself because he, Ms Foley and Mr Brassil, are both based in the north of the county.

Killarney to host Kerry International Film Festival There’ll be a unique film festival atmosphere in Killarney next week as the Kerry International Film Festival is ready to take to local screens. | By Michelle Crean Taking place from October 17 to 20 there’ll be screenings in Killarney Cinema and St Mary’s Church, with industry events in Killarney House and the Plaza Hotel. And for its 20th anniversary, KIFF is debuting a brand-new look - having

undergone an exciting rebrand by the festival’s creative partner Richard Dee Branding and Design. Feature films, documentaries, animation, short film programmes and industry events, will all be part of the threeday event with the festival showcasing new work from Ireland and around the globe.

Quest to welcome over 2000 participants Over 2000 participants are expected to take part in Quest Killarney tomorrow (Saturday). Starting and finishing at the Gleneagle Hotel Killarney, this epic adventure race involves competitors running, cycling and kayaking across Killarney’s National Park taking in spectacular locations such as the Gap of Dunloe, Molls Gap, Black Valley, Ring of Kerry, Torc Waterfall, Devil’s Punchbowl, Mangerton Mountain and Muckross House. “We are delighted to finish the Quest Series for the year in Killarney, it’s our biggest and best event and we’re very excited to be able to welcome more than 2000 adventure racers to town,” Oliver Kirwan, Director, said. “Now in its ninth year, it’s a great event for businesses in Killarney as many of the participants bring friends and family that

The Secret Restaurant and Bar, which has just opened in 5 New Market Lane, has food which will delight any palate with five courses for just €19.95. Since we opened on October 1, we have received fantastic feedback.” Faiza, originally from Pakistan, has been living in Killarney for the past four years and Ireland for 16 years. She runs the restaurant next door to her husband Imran Muhammad’s Uptown Restaurant. Secret Restaurant can seat 36 at any

one time, however in the busy season there’s a limit of 90 minutes per table. “If it’s not busy customers can stay longer,” Faiza, who has chef experience and worked for the Nestle company and Ramada Renises in Pakistan, added. “There’s no set menu. Every day we have 10 main courses, a selection of starters and a salad bar, which adds variety for customers. We also have soup of the day, Gluten Free, Vegan and Vegetarian options available.” They are also the first in Kerry to bring ‘Shisha’ or Hookah, with a variety of flavours for customers to smoke through a waterpipe.

It was the second annual event in the Killarney Oaks, organised by Gillian McEoin, Linda Brosnan, Elaine O’Donoghue and Eilis Cronin, all Gardai from across the Kerry Division. “It was a fabulous night, the glamour was amazing,” Killarney Garda Gillian McEoin told the Killarney Advertiser. “We are delighted with the success of the event again this year. It had taken a 26 year break until it was revived last year. It’s a nice opportunity to get

together with local Gardai from across the division, local businesses and local stakeholders.” And although donations are still being received, she said they’re very happy with the amount raised so far. “We’re very happy with the amount and although we’re still receiving donations we hope to have a final figure released soon.” She thanked the hotel for a beautiful meal, as well as the businesses who donated towards the spot prizes. “We had loads of spot prizes donated from businesses across Kerry, for which we are very grateful,” she said. “We also took donations for the Kerry Rape Crisis Centre on the night.” And there’s plans to organise another ball again next year – though there might be a change in location. “We are thinking of holding in Tralee next year for a change,” she said.

Micheál Ó Muircheartaigh to share his best stories Veteran GAA commentator Micheál Ó Muircheartaigh will tell his best football stories and direct a workshop at the ‘Storied Kerry’ annual conference which will be held in Killarney next month. The conference will open on Saturday, November 2 in St Oliver's National School with a rousing recital by St Oliver's Mass Choir and a few words of encouragement from 12-year-old Micheal O'Brien – who appeared on RTE’s ‘When Michael Met Davy’. The day will be peppered with five minute stories. There will be a storyteller from each of the eight districts Kerry divides into. There will also be stories from each of the aspects of our story – legend, landscape, flora, fauna, archaeology, history, folklore and our contemporary story. Each member of the Storied Kerry/Ciarrai Scealach board will give a five minute report on story activity in their area during the year. This includes all parts of Kerry. AWARD: healycornelius design Director, Michael O'Keeffe MCIAT MCIOB MCABE, at the CABE Built Environment Awards in Manchester, where their project was Highly Commended in the New Build Award 2019.

The project, of three two-bedroom mews houses in Hawley Mews, Camden, London by healycornelius design ltd., was delivered on a challenging and confined site. This context presented a challenging design and construction opportunity. Each house is carefully detailed and designed to maximise light, space and storage and exceeded the rigorous sustainable and environmental requirements set by the Local Authority. While the project was constructed in London, the design, construction and delivery were co-ordinated remotely from the Killarney studio in the KTI Centre, Deerpark, by Regional Director and Chartered Architectural Technologist, Michael O’Keeffe MCIAT MCIOB MCABE, and his team of architectural technologists; Tony Lynch, Robert O’Donovan and Patrick O’Sullivan. Management and supervision of the construction phase, together with London-based Managing Director, Niall Healy MCIAT MCABE, required regular trips for the Killarney team to London for site inspections and meetings.

Usually at this time of year we deal with amendments made by the budget for the upcoming tax year. The budget delivered on Tuesday the 8th of October made limited changes which we can deal with.

Firstly, there was an extension of Section 604B of Capital Gains Tax Relief for Farm Restructuring. The current scheme provides for Capital Gains Tax relief when an individual disposes of and purchases land and/or exchanges land with another farmer in order to consolidate and existing farm. The scheme was due to expire on the 21st of December 2019 and is being extended to the 31st of December 2022 subject to State Aid approval.

In respect of Capital Acquisitions Tax the current group A Tax Rate Threshold which applies primarily to gifts and inheritance from parents to their children is being increased from €320,000.00 to €335,000.00. This increase applies in respect of gifts or inheritances received on or after the 9th of October 2019.

The Help to Buy Scheme which was brought in to assist first time buyers in purchasing new build residential properties has been extended in its present format until the 31st of December 2021. There was an increase in stamp duty on non-residential property from 6% from 7.5% from the 8th of October 2019. However, this will be subject to transitional arrangements whereby the existing 6% rate will apply to instruments executed before the 1st of January 2020 where a binding Contract existed prior to Budget (8th October 2019).

Animals blessed in Killarney The Franciscan Friars in Killarney celebrated the Fest of St Francis, considered the patron saint of animals, in style this week. Last Friday, October 4, was the official date for the Feast of St Francis, however on Sunday the local friars, led by Fr Antony Jukes and Fr Lars Frendel, blessed local dogs, cats, budgies, hamsters and gerbils after Mass. “We had close to 40 pets on Sunday,” Fr Antony told the Killarney Advertiser. “There was even a cow in a trailer parked outside the church.”

The celebrations continued in to this week when the friars staged their annual blessing of the horses at the jarvey stand at the Ha Ha. “Like the Friars, the horses and jarveys are great symbols of Killarney,” added Fr Antony. “The blessing is to encourage everyone to treat all animals with respect, love and care as they are all part of God’s creation.”

Learn how to restart a heart | By Michelle Crean ‘Let’s make Killarney heart safe!’ – that’s the message from Killarney Cardiac Response Unit (KCRU) - who are planning a free training event next week. The voluntary group who respond to 999/112 emergency cardiac phone calls will are inviting the public to come and learn life-saving techniques at their ‘Restart a Heart Day’ next Wednesday, October 16. “Thanks to our event sponsor OC Safety Training we will be delivering a day of free CPR training, AED awareness and information on the critical steps of what to do in an emergency from 2pm to 8pm at the rear of The Laurels Pub & Restaurant Old Market Lane, Killarney,” Carol Moran, a First Responder with KCRU, told the Killarney Advertiser. The group is made up of approximately 40 volunteers, from all sectors of society, who respond to 999/112 emergency car-

diac phone calls. “We are activated once a cardiac call is made to ambulance control and cover an area of 7km from the centre of Killarney town. The Responders have a pager/radio on them which is linked in with a control phone through the National Ambulance Service. We work alongside and under the control of the National Ambulance Service.” She added that they are not there to replace the Ambulance Service but to complement them by providing care and utilising those vital few minutes as every second counts, until The National Ambulance Service arrive on scene. “An out of hospital cardiac arrest has the worst possible outcome for survival, mainly because resuscitation is often delayed or not given. It is vital that resuscitation is started as soon as possible following a cardiac arrest. Killarney Cardiac Response Unit are delighted to be participating in Restart a Heart Day, she added.

It was love at first sight over the hotel reception counter in Killarney for one couple who recently tied the knot.

Eimear Carey (32) from Farranfore and Damien Casey (36) from Castlecove made their marriage vows on September 7, during a spiritualist ceremony in Ballyseede Castle, Tralee. Eimear, daughter of Betty and George Carey, and Damien, son of Michael and Catherine Casey, were joined by family and very close friends who travelled from all over the world to celebrate their big day. The bridal party was made up of Eimear’s friends; Roisin Butler as Maid of Honour, Amy Reidy, Marleen Algoed and Evelyn Dore as Bridesmaids. Best Man was Damien’s brother Ian Casey, with friends Adrian Breen and Cian Boland as Groomsmen. Pageboy was the couple’s own son, one-year-old Luke Casey, while Flowergirl duties were assigned to

Damien’s niece, Charlotte Casey, who also celebrated her second birthday on the same day. “We had a brilliant day,” Eimear, who works in the Bank of Ireland in Tralee, told the Killarney Advertiser. The couple met in the Fáilte Hotel in Killarney where Eimear had been working at the time. Both Cian and Adrian, who were living with Damien in Killarney at the time, often popped in and it was through them that Eimear and Damien met. “Cian asked me to meet Damien one day,’ Eimear said. “We went to Cardiac Hill for our first date, and we’re together since.” The couple spent a few days in Galway for their honeymoon and are planning a cruise this coming January.

From around the globe to Killarney for a double family celebration The Cremin family came from near and far for a massive double celebration in Killarney last weekend. Over 70 family members from both sides of the Atlantic, England, Scotland and Wales came to celebrate a brother’s 50th wedding anniversary and a sister’s 70th birthday. They packed the Killarney Avenue Hotel on Saturday night to recall old times and

make new memories. The Cullen family of 13 - comprising of seven brothers and five surviving sisters – rarely get a chance to spend time together these days as they are scattered through out the globe. One sister could not make the occasion from Australia proving the large footprint this one fam-

ily has made on the world. First up, on Saturday night, was Michael and his Leitrim born wife Mary, who returned from New Jersey to celebrate their Golden Wedding. Michael’s sister Kathy Haffner came from Maine in the United States to mark her 70th birthday. She was joined by her daughter Kimberly and son Eddie. Cousins, grandchildren and extended family made for a long night of catching

up and reminiscing. “It was great,” their brother Sean said. “It is very difficult to get a family of this size together. That does not happen very often. Unfortunately, my sister and her family could not make if from Australia and New Zealand. It is just too far for a weekend. But we had a great time, they are all gone back now, they left for the USA on Wednesday after a lovely weekend.”

Aga was duped in to sampling the dessert menu at the Royal Hotel. “I did not know it was a surprise for me,” she said. “As I arrived I saw a lot more people than I expected. It was lovely, it was good craic, obviously there was no

alcohol with the baby, but it was a really good atmosphere.” Aga is originally from southern Poland, about 60kms south of Krakow and close to the Czech and Slovak borders. She has been living in Ireland for the last six years, mainly on the Dingle Peninsula, but is well-known around Killarney, as she works as a food and beverage manager in the Café du Parc.

Norma will marry Cieran Murphy from Fenit on October 29 at the Sacred Heart Church in Ballyhar. Organised by her sister, Carmel, the crew of family, old school friends and college mates gathered in Reidy’s in Killarney before heading off to Kinsale for the night. There, they received the VIP treatment by Seamus O’Connor who owns the Kitty O’Shea’s chain of restaurants with branches in Killarney and Kinsale. Prior to Reidy’s, Norma and her sister enjoyed breakfast at Brown Sugar in

Killarney with her mom Claire and aunt Eithne Reen. Norma and Cieran both work as carers for the Listowel branch of Kerry Parents and Friends and that is where they met. Carmel will take on the role of Chief Bridesmaid while Cieran’s niece, nineyear-old Blathnaid Murphy, at her own insistence will act as Junior Bridesmaid as she is “too big to be a Flowergirl". Last weekend’s party was only the start of the month-long celebrations. On October 19 she will organise a second hen for her new in-laws and extended family.

Quiet family meal turns into 30th birthday party WE ARE FAMILY: Norma O’Sullivan from Ballyhar with her mom Claire and aunt Eithne Reen.

What was supposed to be a quiet family meal out together – was anything but for Kevin Moriarty – as his girlfriend sprung a surprise 30th party for him on Friday night. When Kevin Moriarty went along to the Killarney Avenue Hotel – a party was the last thing on his mind. The Ballyspillane man had no idea that waiting inside were over 60 friends,

family, neighbours and work colleagues. Kevin can lay the blame squarely with his girlfriend Lily Atkinson and his mother Kathleen. “He had no idea,” his brother Michael explained to the Killarney Advertiser. “He spent the whole night half in shock. He thought he was going for a small family meal and never expected so many in the room. It was great craic and there were a few sore heads around on Saturday.”

Following the article about berried plants last week, I received many queries about specific plants for specific places, with berries. There are many groundcover options, for example Rubus tricolor. This is an ideal plant for a bank or other piece of land, where you need a lot of groundcover fast! It is semi-evergreen, has white flowers throughout the year and in the autumn produces raspberry like berries which birds adore. A smaller variety, one more suited to a garden with less space, but which maybe needs groundcover, little maintenance or has poor soil, is Rubus calycinoides, with its pretty heart shaped rough leaf, a fairly tidy growth habit, white flowers and red berries. It is excellent for any rough ground. There is a cotoneaster for every situation too, from the large upright tree, Cotoneaster cornuba, to the tiny, ground hugging C. mirophyllus ‘Cooperii’. This is a lovely little plant for a rockery, and is easily divided as it set down roots at intervals. Cotoneaster Queen of Carpets is also an easily contained variety and has masses of cherry red berries. Cotoneaster horizontalis has a stiff growth habit and is excellent for use as a climber against a low wall. It also comes in a variegated form, and again, the berries are an explosion of colour.

Kerry Way App gets European Recognition

The Kerry Way Folklore and Heritage App has been recognised at a European level through its inclusion in a new publication highlighting projects in Ireland that have benefited from EU funding over the last 46 years.

At this time of year, a very pretty little plant makes an appearance in most garden centres, with cerise, cherry or white berries, and a slightly prickly foliage. It is generally sold as a small plant suitable for pots. It is called Pernettya mucronata, now also known as Gaultheria mucronata, and is very suitable for pots in winter. However, when it is planted out in the garden it grows to a height of one metre, and is an excellent plant for boggy soil. It does sucker, so beware of giving it enough space! It is covered in small white bell shaped flowers in the summer, followed by its very colourful berries from September onwards. Birds do not like these berries, so they are great value. Gaultheria procumbens is also sold as a winter pot plant, a low growing, spreading little plant, it too has small white bells throughout summer followed by large red berries. There are now also white and pink varieties, the pink being especially pretty. Another plant which puts out a lot of berries, and is unfortunately not used enough in my opinion, is Myrtus Ugni. It is a small, evergreen shrub, staying only about one metre high. Again it bears a white flower, but it absolutely comes into its own in autumn. It is very suitable for a border, I grow it as a taller feature among heathers, but it will look well anywhere.

The Kerry Way App is one of 25 stories to feature in the ‘What’s the Story – 25 stories about Ireland and Europe’ publication, launched by Ceann Comhairle, Seán Ó Fearghaíl, at an event in the Dáil last week. The App, which was developed by Bealoideas Chiarraí – Kerry Folklore, provides walkers along the route with the folklore and heritage of the region that they can listen too via the App. It is free to download and was funded through the RDP LEADER programme, operated through South Kerry Development Partnership CLG with financial support from Kerry Group. The initiative was also supported by Kerry County Council and the Department of Employment Affairs & Social Protection, with previous support through INTERREG. Speaking at the launch the Ceann Comhairle said that the publication “contains rich personal stories of the real ways that European cooperation opens the door to economic opportunity and cultural enrichment, both for Irish people and for our fellow Europeans wishing to strengthen ties with Ireland”. Gerry Kiely, Head of the European Com-

mission Representation in Ireland, said that one of the greatest stories to be told today is that of Ireland’s relationship with Europe. “It’s a tale that has lasted over four decades, and one that will continue to unfold for many future generations. The real story of the European Union and Ireland however can be found in the stories that unfold quietly and without fuss in the communities, businesses, farms, schools and universities around the country.” Bealoideas Chiarraí – Kerry Folklore Chairperson, Johnny O’Connor, who attended the event, said that he hopes the recognition of the App through publications such as this will help ensure many more visitors become aware of it and enjoy it as they walk the route. “We have collected so much material around points of interest along the route as well as undertaking interviews with people who live in these areas that can give visitors a unique insight into what life was and is like in this remote part of Kerry,” Johnny said. “The excellent thing is that it is available in six different languages so it is totally European in nature.”

After a string of failed movies,

Paul said he is looking forward to revisiting Jesse’s character. Not a lot of information has been released about the new movie, but Paul has said he was sufficiently shocked by the ending, saying he had to spend some time just silently taking it in after he read it for the first time. This could mean there is a promising or foreboding ending to the film.

IT Tralee receives €1.5m for driverless cars research Driverless vehicles on Irish roads have taken further steps towards reality following €1.5m awarded to the IT Tralee this week. Earlier this week Heather Humphreys TD, Minister for Business, Enterprise, and Innovation, visited University of Limerick to launch a Science Foundation Ireland backed €4.2m research collaboration on driverless vehicles led by Lero, the Irish Software Research Centre. As part of the programme, researchers from Irish academia, including IT Tralee,

global automotive and Irish firms will collaborate on key international challenges facing the development of driverless vehicles, especially those working in the same environments as pedestrians, animals and human-operated vehicles. “This exciting industry-led partnership research programme will use a range of inexpensive smart sensors and vision systems together with artificial intelligence and machine learning to address situations where decisions are required in real time. The research knowledge gained will help to build world-leading

capability in autonomous and adaptive systems, helping to establish Ireland as an important player in the vehicle autonomous eco-system and delivering solutions that can play a significant part in Ireland’s economy,” said Professor Joseph Walsh, Head of School of Stem and Lero at IT Tralee. Meanwhile in the UK, Hyundai has confirmed that research into driverless cars by the Korean firm has now reached level four. The highest level – five – is where the car is full autonomous in every situation.

The remains of tiny amphibian creature that used to scurry across our beaches has been uncovered by a geologist Dr Eammon Doyle, a geologist for the Burren and Cliffs of Moher UNESCO Global Geopark and Clare County Council. Recent storm activity on local beaches uncovered the bones. The creature dates back to the Carboniferous Period – which predates dinosaurs by over 100 million years - when sea creatures had begun to come to the surface and took their first tentative steps on land. The creature, known as a tetrapod, is presumed to be an ancestor to the first-ever lizards and would ultimately become dinosaurs in the next 100 million years.

The land of the rising misdone US President Donald Trump wished his Japanese counterpart happy birthday on Monday - unfortunately, he was off by over two weeks. As Trump began a press conference at the White House to mark the signing of a US-Japan trade deal, he started by honouring Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe. "I want to start by wishing my very good friend Prime Minister Abe of Japan a very happy birthday - he's 39-years-old today," Trump said, prompting laughter from the crowd. "So please extend my wishes to the Prime Minister - he's a great gentle-

man and we have had tremendous success." Abe turned 65 on September 21, over two weeks before the press conference. So while Trump's comments about Shinzo Abe's age were clearly a joke, it wasn't clear why he chose Monday to offer his birthday well wishes. Instead, Monday was Russian President Vladimir Putin's 67th birthday. Trump made the comments, which have been widely covered in Japanese media, as he marked the signing of a new US-Japan trade agree-

ment and the US-Japan digital trade agreement. When it comes to Abe, who is widely said to have the closest personal ties with Trump among all foreign leaders, the American president has had a fair number of instances where he appeared to embarrass the prime minister or leave him dumbfounded. These have included Trump’s revelation that he had, in private, pushed Abe to nominate him for the Nobel Peace Prize, and also referred to the prime minister as “president” of Japan.

'Triple Threat' Basketball Camp A collection of top level basketball coaches will be sharing their knowledge and skills at a Halloween Basketball Camp that will take place at Killarney Sports Centre from October 30 to Friday November 1. The annual 'Triple Threat' Basketball Camp, running for the sixth year in succession, is the brainchild of well-known Killarney man and Irish international senior ladies team head coach James Weldon. The camp presents a great opportunity for budding young basketballers to work with and learn from some top coaches. The three day Halloween camp is open to boys and girls from age five to 16 and will be divided into two sections. The junior camp is for 5-10 year-olds and takes place from 10am to 1pm on each of the three days. The senior camp is for 11-16 year-olds and will run from 2pm to 5pm each day. The camp will be led by a selection of outstanding Irish and American coaches. James Weldon will be joined over the three days by Irish International Claire Rockall, Scotts Lakers star player Aaron Jackson, and Rathmore's Jim Hughes. There will also be guest appearances at various stages during the camp by American coaches Dr Tim Rice, Erik Johnson, Chris Corbett, Drew Dorsey and Eric Larkins. James Weldon recently led the Irish team

to victories over Estonia and Norway and is looking forward to the European Championship next summer. He is a FIBA Europe Coaching Certificate (FECC) approved basketball coach and one of Europe's most qualified youth coaches. He is a former SuperLeague player with St Pauls Killarney and coached the St Pauls ladies team through an impressive stint in the top flight before going on to enjoy incredible success with the all conquering UL Huskies SuperLeague and national cup winning team. He coached UL to 10 national titles in four seasons and was honoured with the ‘Irish Basketball Coach of the Year’ award on three different occasions. Scotts Lakers new signing Aaron Jackson is one of the most exciting Americans playing in Ireland this season. He played top flight NCAA division one basketball for University of Akron and has made an instant impression in the National League since his arrival in Killarney. He has played with and against some top players who have progressed to the NBA while he has also enjoyed the unique distinction of playing several scrimmage games in Akron with fellow Cleveland native and global superstar LeBron James. Kerry Tourism businesses target Canadian market Several Killarney and Kerry-based tourist service providers attended a special Fáilte Ireland-hosted workshop targeting Canadian tour operators and visitors. The workshop took place at The Johnstown Estate, Enfield, Co. Meath last week. Up to 810 one-to-one meetings between 55 Irish traders including representatives from Atlantic Irish Seaweed, Killarney Jaunting Cars, Tangney Tours, the Lake Hotel, Manor West Hotel Spa, Parknasilla Hotel, Rose Travel, Sneem Hotel, The Gleneagle Group and the Tourism Irish Tourism Group and 18 Canadian tour operators took place over the course of the day with the goal of

securing business for 2020 and beyond. “This sales drive seeks to capitalise on increased air access into Ireland from Canada and to develop opportunities for long haul destinations to include Ireland as a holiday experience. In 2018, over 220,000 Canadian tourists visited Ireland spending an estimated €206m so the Canadian market is important for Ireland,” Paul Mockler, Head of Commercial Development with Fáilte Ireland, said. “We are also focussing on using Canadian’s tendency to travel south between December to March on account of their harsh winters to extend Ireland’s traditional tourism season by showcasing the breath of experiences available in Ireland outside of the summer months.”

Busy times at Ahern’s Garage Castleisland Ahern’s Garage in Castleisland has been a hive of activity in recent weeks with the arrival of several new cars that are making their first appearances on Kerry roads. The first car to hit their Tralee Road showroom was the all-new BMW 1 Series. It’s a massive seller for the German manufacturer and now, in its third generation, the aim is to continue the 1 Series’ success. Both of its previous iterations used a traditional BMW rear-wheel drive layout, but this has been abandoned in favour of a more space-efficient frontwheel drive set-up. The third-generation model offers significantly more space than its predecessor. Passengers in the rear are the main beneficiaries. “A five-year process of development has seen BMW channel all the experience amassed by the BMW Group over recent years with front-wheel-drive technology

It was relief all round for hundreds of Killarney students – who, after an extended wait this year - received the results of their first ever state exams last Friday. There was mixed emotions from students from Killarney Community College, St Brendan’s and St Brigid’s Presentation, many of whom collected their results from their schools, while others opted to view them at home online. Killarney Community College was a hive of excitement and tension in equal measures as the Junior Certificate results were handed out. Over 80 delighted students, now in Transition Year, Leaving Cert Year 1 and Leaving Cer-

tificate Applied, collected their results highlighting their academic achievements over the past three years. “The college’s excellent results are a testament to the hard work and dedication of the teaching staff, the students and their parents,” Principal, Stella Loughnane, said. “I was particularly impressed with the high standards of the results in History which were above the national norms.” The number of students who achieved ‘Distinction’ and ‘Higher Merits’, along with the traditional A and B grades, were of particular satisfaction to the college. We hope the students enjoy the celebrations while keeping in mind that these results set the academic standard for the Senior Cycle programmes they are currently studying.”

The men from the sunny southeast gave up 94 points and managed to score just 49 in return in what was a very one-sided encounter at the Auracle. Stoppages and technical issues aside, Ballincollig were better overall against a Lakers team that struggled for long periods before slumping to their heaviest defeat of the past three seasons. A poor return of just two converted three-pointers from 20 attempts certainly didn't help their cause either. Toby Christensen with 23 points and 12 rebounds was the Lakers’ best performer. Ballincollig have a 100% record against the Killarney club over the past two years, winning all five meetings between the sides. These rivals will clash again in one of the biggest games of the season in Killarney Sports Centre on October 26 when they meet in the first round of the National Cup. Ballincollig are going for their third National Cup title on the trot and on last weekend's performance, they will be hot favourites once again.

John Delaney has finally been forced to resign from the FAI but KDL secretary John O’Regan says he “can’t see what was done wrong”. His continued support for the disgraced ex-chief executive is damaging the reputation of Kerry soccer, writes Adam Moynihan

Sticking by John Delaney at this stage of proceedings is dumbfounding and when the head of the Kerry District League continues to do so, it undoubtedly causes reputational damage to Kerry soccer.

Whenever the flames surrounding John Delaney’s ill-fated tenure began to rise, John O’Regan was always first on the scene to tackle the blaze, armed with nothing more than two lungs full of air. We saw it numerous times over the past seven months. The secretary of the Kerry District League frequently appeared on radio and television to defend his stricken comrade, on one occasion going so far as to say that the embattled celebrity administrator should be “running the country”. Now, following his resignation 10 days ago, the Delaney years are done. The fire fighting failed and all that remains is a charred pile of guff and empty promises. Yet, in spite of everything, in spite of the litany of misconduct allegations, both pecuniary and moral, O’Regan still stands by his man. Speaking to the Irish Independent last weekend, the FAI Senior Council member once again reiterated his unwavering support for his long-time friend and associate. “He's done a fantastic job here in Kerry,” O’Regan said. “John Delaney was in the job for 14 or 15 years. He did mighty work for many, many years. “I'm listening to people in the grassroots in Kerry and Limerick and all over. In youth soccer and junior soccer and schoolboy soccer. They have no problem with John Delaney. He's done an awful lot for that side of the game. The people I have seen whingeing and moaning are the crowd in the League of Ireland. “I can't see what was done wrong to be honest.” Frankly, that last line is staggering. Or at least it would be were it not so painfully predictable. Let’s get this straight. As far as John O’Regan is concerned, John Delaney providing the FAI with a secret bridging loan of €100,000 so they could con-

11.10.2019 tinue to pay their employees was not wrong. Devising the Vantage Club premium ticketing scheme, a disastrous venture which left the association struggling to pay its share of the Aviva Stadium construction costs, was not wrong. Accepting, on behalf of the FAI, a secret €5 million pay-off from FIFA over the Thierry Henry handball affair was not wrong. Taking a salary of €450,000 (later €360,000) at a time when FAI staff were being made redundant was not wrong. Accepting €36,000 a year to help pay for his rent (in addition to his salary) was not wrong. Spending €40,000 on his company credit card over a six-month period, including €400 at Tommy Hilfiger and €226 on shirts from Thomas Pink, was not wrong. The fact that this year the FAI, who Delaney said would be debt-free by 2020, needed financial assistance from UEFA just to avoid collapse was not wrong. And now, even though the ex-CEO has been forced to quit on the back of all of these astonishing revelations, many of which came to light after some excellent journalism by Mark Tighe and The Sunday Times, O’Regan still "can’t see what was done wrong to be honest”. Sticking by John Delaney at this stage of proceedings is dumbfounding and when the head of the Kerry District League continues to do so, it undoubtedly causes reputational damage to Kerry soccer. Does O’Regan genuinely not see what Delaney has done wrong (which would be very concerning) or is he misusing his position and status to defend the indefensible (also very concerning)? What makes this all the more confusing is the fact that for the first time in 15 years, backing John Delaney cannot in any way benefit the game in this part of the world - if it ever did at all. Delaney is gone. He has returned his badges, both FAI and UEFA. He has turned in his green tie (though not the one he triumphantly tossed into the crowd in Moscow). He has handed over his shoes (though not the pair he had taken from his feet in Sopot, nor the ones he generously gifted to a needy “itinerant” child). And, tearfully no doubt, he has even checked in his pride and joy: the novelty, over-sized, company chequebook. O’Regan’s words are problematic but what’s more worrying from my point of view is that his remarks are invariably met with silence. When various league chairmen and boards around the country unilaterally backed Delaney in March, many clubs spoke out to say that they hadn’t been consulted. That hasn’t been the case in Kerry despite the fact that virtually everyone I’ve spoken to disagrees with O’Regan’s sentiments

entirely. And in terms of media coverage, I haven’t seen too many column inches dedicated to the secretary of the KDL or the things he has said. Why is that?

ROLES

O’Regan wields a lot of power in Mounthawk Park. In addition to acting as league secretary, he is also fixtures secretary and joint treasurer. And if you were listening to Radio Kerry last Saturday evening, you would have heard the man who runs Kerry soccer assuming PRO duties too as he previewed the weekend’s junior soccer fixtures. He even predicted who was going to win. Allies will point to this omnipresence as evidence of O’Regan’s dedication, as well as proof of how hard it is to find volunteers to fill these roles. Others, including former league officers and club officials, have claimed privately that in the KDL, it’s O’Regan’s way or the highway. If that is, indeed, the case, it seems as though many people have simply chosen the highway. O’Regan’s disciples speak of all the hard work he has done for the KDL down through the decades and there’s no denying that over the course of his 44year reign he has given up thousands of hours of his time. As the son of a long-serving club official myself, and as someone who has served as PRO for my own GAA club, I know how thankless a job it is to volunteer for an amateur sport. Anyone who takes up a voluntary role within a club or sporting organisation is deserving of great credit, especially if they do it for a long period of time. That should go without saying. But all the service in the world shouldn’t shield you from criticism if you get something wrong. When you represent a club or a league, be it for four weeks or forty-four years, you have to be held accountable. O’Regan is answerable to the clubs, not the other way around. Look at it this way: if GAA president John Horan did what John Delaney did, and Tim Murphy, the chairman of the Kerry County Board, came out and repeatedly backed him without asking the clubs for their opinions, would he get a free pass? No chance. The clubs and the media would be up in arms, and rightly so.

A profile piece by Mike Rice of The Kerryman dated January 2012 revealed that O’Regan “has been nicknamed ‘God’ by many of his friends in the world of soccer as he has made so many things happen at Mounthawk Park”. And it’s not just friends. Foes also seem to cast O’Regan in this divine light. For many people within the Kerry soccer family, this raises a difficult question. How do you stand up to God?

CASTLEISLAND Killarney were delighted to re-enter the U18 grade last weekend, flying solo again after a few years’ hiatus. The buzz was palpable as a full compliment of 23 set out to take on nearest rivals Castleisland on Saturday. Killarney triumphed in a tightly fought and combative encounter. 13 first half points were enough to seal the deal with a well-taken Gary Randles try and seven points from the cultured boot of Ciarán O’Brien. Killarney started confidently and accurately and controlled much of the first half territory and possession. As always, Island competed fiercely and their defensive tackling was rock solid. The second half was reflective of a season opener with a lot of individual endeavour carried out between the two 10-yard lines. Neither team really threatened the try line but the action was unrelenting, skilful, sporting and highly entertaining. Pádraig Talbot and Adam McSweeney slotted in seamlessly for the second half. The back line worked impressively through a variety of combinations, starting with elder statesmen Dion O’Neill and Cian Murphy as the half-back pairing, Michael Óg Casey and Adam Walsh as centres, and Mark Sheahan and Krystian Komosa on the wings. Gary Randles started at 15. Ronan Buckley was an early injury replacement and the cavalry arrived for the last 15 minutes with Peter Walsh, Donnchadh Grealy, Tomás Clifford, James Kennelly and Aidan Keane all entering the fray. Management were delighted with the performance and the cohesive team spirit. Next up is a mouth-watering contest at home this Saturday at 12.30pm (on the club’s new pitch for the first time) against the combined forces of Tralee and Listowel. All support is welcome. Training for the Killarney RFC U18s is Thursday at 7.30pm.

East Kerry 0-20 | Kerins O’Rahilly’s 3-9 (AET) AUSTIN STACK PARK Rahilly’s got off to an explosive start when Tommy Walsh picked up a great ball and transferred it to team captain Barry John Keane. He sent a screamer past James Devane for an opening goal with a mere 50 seconds on the clock. Worse was to follow for East Kerry as they conceded three goals in total in the first 12 minutes. Karl Mullins came from deep in the 10th minute to rattle the net and Jack Savage added a third just two minutes later. The Tralee side were completely on top in that first quarter.

David Clifford was prominent in the East Kerry revival. He shot eight valuable points, reducing the deficit to two (3-2 to 0-9) by half-time. Niall Donohue also caught the eye at corner back. The Firies man made some timely interventions. Early in the second half, East Kerry were awarded a penalty but Paudie Clifford’s effort was well saved by Gary Kissane. That was a severe blow for the East. Rahilly’s captain Barry John Keane was issued a straight red when he retaliated after shipping a hefty tackle from his East Kerry marker. This naturally gave a great chance to East Kerry but Strand Road refused to yield, inspired by a Man of the Match performance from midfielder David Moran. Jack Savage scored 1-4 for Rahilly’s, 1-1 from play. David Clifford kept sending over those points and Darragh Roche was also active on the scoresheet. He scored three points (two frees). Meanwhile, Spa forward Michael Foley hit four points, all from play. A long range free from David Clifford left just a single point between the sides but points by Jack Savage and Tommy Walsh put the Tralee team ahead 3-4 to 0-10

with 12 minutes left in normal time. Points by Clifford, Foley and Liam Kearney put East Kerry a point ahead with three minutes left in the game. Ryan Carroll and Tommy Walsh pointed to give Rahilly’s the lead but up popped Shane Cronin to force extra time.

EXTRA TIME

In the first period of extra time, both sides added three more points. David Moran and David Clifford chipped in with majestic points to tie the scores 3-9 to 0-18. Clifford added two match winning points while Rahilly’s finished with three wides in an exciting period of extra time. East Kerry advance to the quarter-finals while Kerins O’Rahilly’s bow out of the competition. Kenmare Shamrocks 2-11 West Kerry 2-8 Kenmare got off to a terrible start, failing to score in the first 24 minutes. During that period West Kerry scored 2-4, including a spectacular solo effort by Brian Ó Beaglaoich in the 9th minute when he went on a solo run from deep within his own half before rattling the net. West Kerry were ahead until the 52nd minute when Paul O’Connor scored his second goal to gave Kenmare the lead. St Brendan's 4-22 Shannon Rangers 1-12 Brendan's proved far too good for a poor Shannon Rangers team. Former Kerry minor James Duggan was the star player for St Brendan's. He scored 2-4. St Kieran’s v Kilcummin was postponed due to a bereavement and that match has been refixed for Sunday at 2.30pm in the Fitzgerald Stadium. The draw for the quarter-finals will be held after this game.

Cyclocross season up and running Now that the road season is over for the winter months, competitive cyclists will turn their hand to cyclocross. The first round of the Munster Cyclocross took place in Bandon last Sunday, hosted by St Finbar’s Cycling Club. Killarney riders fared well on the event with Patrick Clifford taking first place in the M40 category and Richard Maes taking third in the elites – both riding for Strata3/Velo Revolution. John Crowley took fourth in M50 riding for Killarney Cycling Club. Youth riders representing the local club included Donagh O’Connor who finished second in the U12 category, Eoghan

Crowley who took fourth in the U16 race and Mark O’Connor who came sixth in the same event. In the junior section, Ruairí Coughlan finished third and Mark McGlynn took fifth. “Cyclocross is fast becoming a family event throughout Ireland,” Patrick Clifford told the Killarney Advertiser. “Each year more people participate. It’s a great spectator sport - it can be watched from many points of the course as the riders do laps for up to an hour of racing. “It involves racing a drop bar bike on knobby tires. There are barriers and mud to overcome, so the riders may have to run at points with the bike on their shoulder.”

Fassbender’s Le Mans dream Michael Fassbender has set a target of competing in the Le Mans 24-Hour endurance race next June and will document his effort on a YouTube video series. Road to Le Mans will begin streaming today (Friday 11) and will run weekly until he actually races at the famous French event or up to the point where it is no longer possible to qualify for the race. The series will follow the local Hollywood A-lister while he competes on entry-level Porsche Carrera Cup Races in Germany, and bigger (and longer) endurance races throughout Europe. "I've just always felt drawn to going fast into a corner and fast out and just naturally felt connected to it - and now I want to go to the ultimate place," he said. "I think it's the history of the place, I think it's the drivers that crashed there, competed there, won there…” Organisers allow 60 cars to enter the mid-June race and the majority of places are taken up by manufacturer teams or drivers contesting the full World Endurance Racing Championship. However, amateur drivers are allowed enter and they would be obliged to share driving duties with a least two professional drivers. Such teams usu-

ATHLETICS

Gneeveguilla Athletic Club LOTTO: Next week’s jackpot is €6,200 plus €1,000 bonus. CROSS COUNTRY: A slightly better turnout in athletes at cross country competition in Ballaugh Killarney. A big thanks to the Cremin family for the use of their facility. Saoirse Tompkins was 2nd U17, Caroline Murphy 4th Intermediate. Girls U11 got a silver team medal. Team was Emma Dineen, Daisy Cremin, Aoife O’Donovan, Elma Cremin & Aisling O’Leary. Next Sunday 13th sees the seniors and juniors and U10/U12/U14/U16 4 x 500m relay in Firies at 11am. Medals will be distributed to team members, medals which for some reason were not available to pick up on the day. The county board should have medals available to pick up on the day of competition. TRAINING: Continues Tuesday Boherbue 6-7pm & 7-8pm; Barradubh Friday 7-8pm & Gneeveguilla 8-9pm. COACHING COURSE: A Leaders coaching course is coming up shortly. Killarney Valley Athletic Club RESULTS: Congrats to all who took part in the second Cross Country of the season held last Sunday in Lissivigeen. Darragh O’Leary led the U19s the whole way to receive a gold medal. Next we had Tara O’Sullivan, Naoise O’Connor and Kate Lyons who ran in the U11 Girls. Naoise and Tara stayed strong the whole way around to come 2nd and 3rd respectively. Kate Lyons ran a great race also. Lastly we had Ted O’Gorman who led the U15 field the whole way around to receive a well-deserved gold. Fantastic results from everyone. TRAINING will continue every Thursday eve 6-7pm. All members welcome. Bring €2 and water. Meet at field beside the playground. The next County Cross Country competition is Relays next Sunday at 11am in Firies. Strength & Conditioning continues on Monday nights 7-8pm for members only (aged 12 upwards). Bring €2, water and a mat if you have one. Muckross Rowing Club OPEN DAY: As the new rowing year 2019/20 kicks off, Muckross RC will hold its Open Day on Sunday, October 20 from 10.30am-12pm at the club boathouse. For newcomers, we are located a short walk from the main Muckross House car park. All are welcome to come along, see and hear what rowing is all about and try it out if you want! All ages 12+ (boys and girls) and parents/guardians welcome. Coaches and adult members will be on hand to answer any questions you may have. Rowing offers opportunities for recreational rowing up to the highest competitive stage and all levels between, with a strong sporting and social tradition in Muckross dating back to the 19th century. Flesk Valley Rowing Club RACE NIGHT: Just 3 weeks to go to our fundraising race night which will be held at the Killarney Oaks Hotel on November 1 at 8pm. Horses, trainers and jockeys are available to be purchased from club members. Your support is greatly appreciated on what is sure to be a great night for all the family CLOTHING COLLECTION: Flesk Valley will yet again be holding a clothing collection in association with National Council for the Blind. This will be held on the weekend of November 16/17. So time to clear out the wardrobes yet again and help raise money for these worthy causes.
