FILM RELEASE: Jessie Buckley, star of 'Wild Rose', which is released in cinemas today (Friday).

“Critics say film is a star-making role” Buckley’s film to hit Killarney cinema tonight (Friday) | By Michelle Crean She’s a Killarney girl at heart - but Jessie Buckley’s latest film ‘Wild Rose’ - which hits cinemas tonight - is set to propel the local girl to Hollywood stardom. 29-year-old Jessie, daughter of Tim and Marina, stars in the 15A rated British drama musical film alongside Julie Walters. Locals who want a glimpse of

Jessie’s talent on screen can see her in Cinema Killarney this evening (Friday) at 6.40pm and again at 9pm. In the 100 minute long film, which is receiving rave reviews from the critics worldwide, Jessie plays sassy Glaswegian Rose-Lynn, a cleaner with a criminal record who dreams of going to Nashville and becoming a star.

And her family, who are very proud of Jessie’s achievements, say unfortunately she isn’t in town to see the film with them. “Unfortunately she’d love to be here but she’s filming a new Charlie Kaufman film in New York,” Jessie’s dad, Tim Buckley, told the Killarney Advertiser yesterday (Thursday).

Rock Road car park nears completion | By Sean Moriarty There’ll be traffic disruption on Rock Road tomorrow (Saturday) to facilitate works, including a power connection to the new Rock Road bus and car park – which is set for a mid-May opening. Traffic delays will occur as workers connect power to the site to operate the new electric barrier and parking ticket machines. The Killarney Advertiser has been campaigning since July 2017 for additional car parking spaces in the town - especially during the busy tourist season months. The site was acquired from the Mercy Sisters last year and works began by Glas Civil Engineering in November. The plan also includes a new cycleway and walk-

way to the top of High Street. The new car park, which is being redeveloped by Mike Lynch Civil Engineering, will provide approximately 190 additional public car parking spaces in Killarney and will be open just ahead of the busy tourist season.

Council workers recently completed the difficult task of moving the pedestrian archway and decorative pillars at the entrance of the old Mercy Convent back 4.8 metres, to make room for the new car park entrance and to widen to road there.

“It’s a fantastic occasion,” Tim, who will be there with family to see it, said. “It’s a great film that everyone will enjoy with laughter and tears in equal measure. It’s a film which a lot of the critics say is a star-making role.” He added that the film is about a person realising their dreams but it’s not as easy as that – and it’s a role which suits Jessie perfectly. "Kerry and Killarney are part of her make up,” he said. “It’s a film which is essentially about being true to yourself and that’s her own motto as well. Her fear is getting caught up in the celebrity bubble. She’s very real and trying to keep herself grounded. She’s still a Kerry girl at heart.” Jessie’s rise to stardom was not overnight as she headed to London aged 17 and has grafted hard ever since for big time roles. However, Tim added that locals have been very supportive of her throughout her career. “I’d like to say a big thank you to Tommy Cooper in Killarney Cinema - he’s been a big supporter of Jessie’s. He got ‘A Winter’s Tale’ into the local cinema.” Also, coinciding with the film’s release is the film’s album which features six songs written by Jessie. When 'Wild Rose' premiered at the Toronto International Film Festival, Jessie received a 20 minute standing ovation for her role in the film, Tim added. “The next one to watch out for is ‘Chernobyl’, a five-part series from Sky and HBO starring Jessie and Barry Keoghan.”

“We dismantled it one rock at the time and numbered each rock as we went,” said site foreman Sean Enright. “It was slow work, we had to use the machine to lift the rocks because they are so heavy and replace them one by one. We took plenty of photographs too.” This week the crew replaced the existing water pump house that serves a priest’s house in the grounds, a complex operation that required the building of a new pump-house and the connection of same ahead of disconnecting the existing one without interrupting the water supply to the house. t END DATE IN SIGHT: Works on Rock Road are nearing completion with an expected opening date in May. “We are being forgotten about” Parkinson’s sufferer calls for specialist nurses for Kerry | By Michelle Crean A Kilcummin man who suffers from Parkinson’s Disease says patients in Kerry have been begging for funding for 10 years for specialist nurses – but their pleas are being ignored. Currently there are no nurses available in the county for Parkinson’s sufferers, and Connie Doolan (62), who was diagnosed with the disease in 2010, says many patients feel left out in the cold. Connie, who is Chair of the Parkinson’s Association of Ireland South Kerry branch, is lending his voice for more specialised care for Kerry patients – following a national protest outside Leinster House in Dublin yesterday (Thursday), as part of World Parkinson’s Day and Parkinson’s Awareness Week this week. Although many from Kerry couldn’t travel due to the complexity of their illness, protesters say that the Government has failed to provide core funding to the Parkinson’s Association. Connie says that in Kerry repeated at-

tempts for funding from the HSE over the years has fallen on deaf ears. “We know there’s no cure for it,” Connie told the Killarney Advertiser this week. “We’re fighting for a nurse for 10 years and they’re giving us the run around. They keep saying they’ll look into it. We wrote to the HSE again in November but they never got back to us. We feel left out completely – forgotten about – it’s ridiculous. They have nurses for every other disease.” He said that access to services is limited for Parkinson’s patients, but having a nurse who could call to people’s homes would give people some relief. His group hold monthly meetings in the meeting room at the Church of the Resurrection in Killarney, and on Monday night dietician Elaine Walsh gave a talk on nutrition. However, he says more needs to be done to help them. “There’s people out there who don’t come to the meetings. It would be a relief to have a nurse allocated to Kerry who could call to their homes.”

TALK: Members of the South Kerry Parkinson’s group who gathered for an information talk on Monday night.

Society pays tribute to award recipient following tragic accident The Hugh O’Flaherty Society this week relayed their shock at the tragic death of 2011 award recipient Sally O’Neill. Trócaire’s former head died in a freak car accident in western Guatemala earlier this week. It was reported that all four people in the car died when it plunged into a 300 metre ravine off the Inter-American Highway. “Sally was nominated for the 2011 award and was unanimously selected by the independent award panel,” Jerry O’Grady, Hugh O’Flaherty Society Chair, said.

He added that the award panel’s endorsement at the time read – ‘It would be a gross understatement to say that the committee members were impressed by her record of humanitarian work over the past three decades. She is considered by all to be a shining example of what Hugh O’Flaherty stood for i.e. putting oneself at the service of the oppressed without any regard for their race or creed and at clear risk to one’s own life’. “One of my abiding memories of Sally was the optimism and joy that she exud-

ed when talking to us about the challenges Trócaire faced in Central America, and she also had a natural and very necessary sense of humour. Sally’s passing follows only four months after the 2015 award recipient Dr John Beavis died. The world can ill-afford to lose humanitarians like Sally O’Neill and Dr John Beavis.” He added that their deepest sympathies go out to her husband Roger and her children, her extended family, friends and colleagues in the wider NGO family. May she rest in peace.

Legion launch their annual golf fundraiser Legion GAA Club this week launched their annual golf classic, which will take place next month. Friday, May 3 is the date to put in your diary for the charity event, which will take place at the Killarney Golf and Fishing Club. Good Friday Walk in memory of two Killarney women

The Killarney branch of Kerry Hospice are planning their annual fundraising walk in memory of Vivien O'Shea and Sheila McGillycuddy, on Good Friday, April 19. Registration is at 10am at the Garden Restaurant, Muckross House and the walk will commence at 10.30am. “All funds are going to the hospice who cared for those two beautiful women who were taken in the prime of their lives, leaving young children behind,” Cathal Walshe, PRO for the Killarney branch, said. “Their memory lives on through the walk.” It’s the first fundraiser of the year for the Killarney branch, he added. “Last year we raised €84,000 for the hospice.” There are two choices of walk. The first via Dinis Cottage and a section of Torc trail back to the restaurant. The second to Brickeen Bridge and return.

The first is 8km while the second is 6km, Cathal explained. “There is no registration fee, but donations are welcome through the bucket system. There will also be a raffle for worthwhile prizes and complementary tea/coffee on return. Here’s hoping for a fine day to enjoy the walk through the National Park. Bring along the family at the same time supporting a worthy cause in the memory of two beautiful women who are no longer with us.” Suitable footwear is advisable in the interests of health and safety, especially along the Torc section, he added. “Funds raised during the walk will go to Hospice palliative care throughout the county.”

constantly improve our facilities and also to help continue to offer the community a healthy and character building alternative,” Enda said. “With over 16 teams, including boys and girls, the upkeep of the pitches and training areas is a challenge and it is vitally important to give our members the best possible coaching and training. “To this end, our annual gold classic is a vital fundraiser for our club. It also gives the participants an ideal opportunity to play one of Ireland's finest courses.”

Community Alert Group set up following suspicious approach to boy | By Sean Moriarty Worried Scartaglin residents have this week formed a Community Alert Group - following a suspicious approach made by a masked man to a boy in the local GAA pitch. Last Saturday afternoon between 3.15pm and 3.35pm, a local 11-year-old boy who was playing football on his own after the U10 football training had finished, was approached by a man whose face was covered. The frightened youngster was able to make his escape and alert his parents who live in a house very close to Scartaglin GAA pitch. Garda, who are investigating the incident, are appealing to the public for their assistance asking if anyone has seen a black or dark coloured car, possibly a VW Golf in the area at the time. The local GAA club acted immediately and organised an urgent committee meeting on Monday and an open public meeting the following night. Close to 130 local residents attended Tuesday night’s meeting - including the

parents of the child. A new 20-strong committee was formed to organise a Community Alert programme in the area. “Scartaglin GAA does everything it should to protect our children, we never leave kids on their own after a training session and at least one coach will always stay behind,” said Coiste na Og officer Seamus Riordan from Scartaglin GAA Club. “A lot of people were concerned that the boy was on our pitch kicking football on his own. He would view that pitch as an extension of his own lawn and his parents’ house is right beside the pitch. His father spoke openly at the public meeting and we were able to get the full story on what happened. No details were hidden or left untold. We are looking at installing CCTV in an effort to further protect our children and everyone in the parish.” Gardai continue to investigate the incident and the newly formed Community Alert committee will meet again in the coming weeks. Anyone with information can contact Tralee Garda Station on 066 7102300.

London calling for marathon runner

A Beaufort-based community nurse will be amongst over 40,000 participants in this year’s world-famous London Marathon.

| By Sean Moriarty Catriona Shanahan is currently in the final preparations for the big event, which will take place on April 28. She was inspired to take part this year to help raise funds for the Killarney Micro Track, which is due to begin construction in June. This is the Killarney Valley Athletic Club member’s second marathon having previously finished the 2010 Dublin marathon “at walking pace”. On Sunday, she completed her final 20-mile run on the country roads near her Beaufort home, before tapering off her distance training ahead of the big

event at the end of the month. “Training is going very well,” Catriona told the Killarney Advertiser. “I am raising funds for the track as I can see it will be of benefit to everyone, adults and kids. I am a member of the Killarney Fit For Life Group and can see how this track will help everyone.” The London Marathon is one of the blue riband long-distance events on the calendar, alongside November’s New York Marathon. The race starts in Blackheath, near Greenwich and along the way she will pass such iconic locations as Tower Bridge, The London Eye and Big Ben, before finishing on The Mall in front of Buckingham Palace.

The free App, which showcases the heritage and folklore of the Kerry Way walking route, was launched in Muckross School House, Killarney, by EU Agriculture Commissioner, Phil Hogan, this week. Developed by Béaloideas Chiarraí/Kerry Folklore, the App identifies particular points of interests for walkers along the route as well as enabling them listen to local people tell stories of the area down through the years. It’s available in six languages including Irish and covers the whole of the Kerry Way route in nine stages over its 200km route. Funding for the project was provided through the LEADER programme with match funding from Kerry Group, with the initial App and the first stage of the project being developed with funding through the INTERREG programme, again with support from Kerry Group. “This App is a wonderful asset for the area and will enable people who visit the region the chance to get a unique sense of place experience,” Commissioner Hogan said. The App will now help to make people aware of special sites as they pass by them as well as informing them, through the voices of the locals, as to how life was and is in the region, Commissioner Hogan added. Kerry Folklore Committee Chairman, Johnny O’Connor, thanked all those in-

Hosts wanted to accommodate cyclists | By Michelle Crean Participants in this year’s Cycle Against Suicide will be wheeling into town on May 1 next – and organisers are calling on the people of Killarney to offer up a bed for one night . Up to 150 cyclists are taking part in the event which includes two stops in Kerry – first in Listowel followed by Killarney. Homestay hosts are needed to give the cyclists a meal and a place to stay for the night, Julett Culloty, Killarney coordinator explained to the Killarney Advertiser this week. “We are looking for hosts for Wednesday May 1,” Julett said. “They have to be in a 20 mile radius of Killarney town. The cyclists will arrive at 5pm at Killarney Community College. The hosts will meet them there and take them

home for a meal and give them a bed for the night. The bikes will stay at the community college overnight. We’d just ask that they bring the cyclists back to the school by 9am the following morning as the cycle begins at 9.30am.” Former Kerry Rose, Julett (29), got involved through her friend Maria Conway in Lixnaw, who is an annual participant in the cycle. “It’s all about awareness,” Julett said. “The cyclists stop in different towns and villages along the way where they raise awareness and make their presence known. It’s not about fundraising, it’s about awareness and the message ‘It’s OK not to feel OK, and it is absolutely OK to ask for help’. Our main thing is to find hosts to accommodate them.” Anyone who has a bed to offer can contact Julett on 087 4125680 or by email: julettculloty@gmail.com.

VIEWS NEWS What a difference a decade or two makes! ON

THE

A representative of the bin Mahfouz family, the Saudi Arabian billionaire banker family, and a major shareholder in Kerry Airport since the 1990s, has been appointed to the board in what will surely be a major boost to our airport. Mr Sammy Haress will represent the interests of Glenmore Capital which is a Kerry Airport shareholding company, according to a statement from the airport. He is an internationally-qualified Engineer and CEO of Jetstream Aviation Inc. Airport chairman, Denis Cregan, said that the new board member’s experience within the international aviation industry, particularly in the corporate jet sector, will be “of immense benefit to Kerry Airport and the southwest region”. Glenmore Capital is registered in the British Virgin Isles and it represents the original investment in Kerry Airport by the late Sheikh Khalid bin Mahfouz. Kerry Airport was one of a number of Irish ventures to benefit from a £20 million investment by the late Sheikh in 1990 linked to a grant of 11 Irish passports to Pakastani and Saudi nationals by then Minster Ray Burke and Taoise-

ach Charles Haughey. The Mahfouz passports caused a major political scandal when the story emerged. In 1998, as the Irish Times reported, our own John O’Donoghue suspended “the passports for sale scheme”. Under the scheme, introduced in 1984,

Columnist ANNE LUCEY gives her take on happenings in Killarney, Kerry and beyond

applicants seeking naturalisation had to make an investment of £1 million per person in the State. The investment had to be for job creation or job maintenance. A substantial residence in Ireland also had to be purchased by the applicant. The naturalisation forms for the 11 of the Mahfouz passports were signed by the then Minister for Justice, Mr Ray Burke, in his house in December 1990. Mr Haughey is reported to have handed over the passports personally to the Mahfouz party in Dublin the following

day. Roll on the decades: I regularly attend the citizenship ceremonies now, where we confer citizenship, not in their elevenses but in their thousands at any one time. Were we too easily outraged in the mid-1990s? Have we gone from one extreme to another is the real question. There were voices in the 1990s that thought the granting of a few passports in return for major investments was a wise move in a country and a region like Kerry strapped for cash. But those voices were drowned out. There are voices now that think the country has to manage immigration better, that we are not coping well with the very natural housing, education, and health needs not just of the “old” Irish but of the “new Irish” also. The breakdown between people getting passports or coming to live here are not clear. We are not sure and we are not told for instance how many of the 822,000 Irish passports issued last year were new or were renewals. The old parties have shied away from the debate – the danger now is the extreme parties will force it on the agenda. And not in a good and reasoned way. Aontú, the new party, have already exploded onto the stage with it for instance. Maybe as a useful exercise, someone should do a thesis on the whole difference between the 1990s and now and how Ireland has changed so much in just two decades.

Why is there no one fighting for staff for the National Park? The National Parks and Wildlife Service (NPWS)/Department of Culture, Heritage and the Gaeltacht are reluctant to give out the number of staff dedicated to Killarney National Park. I asked for figures for rangers and for grounds personnel for 2009 and for 2019 - and I got the current overall figures for the entire country! It would be too difficult to give exact numbers for Killarney, I was told, because the Department has changed its name and make-up so often. Yet we all know you can count on one hand the numbers employed in the park right now. The good news - it has been announced before – is some 13 extra rangers will be employed across the NPWS service, eventually. But the Department has not specified how many will be destined for

the country’s biggest National Park - Killarney. The overall number of conservation rangers for the country as a whole, including the six national parks and reserves like Glengarriff, is 63. The overall figure for staff is “34 general operatives, five gardeners and two head gardeners deployed across the six National Parks and the nature reserves managed by the NPWS”. Now, the Phoenix Park in Dublin, managed by the OPW, and one twentieth of the size of Killarney has 15 general operatives and 19 gardeners, the OPW tells me. There may now be fewer than four conservation rangers for the 10,000 hectare, 25,000 acre National Park and UNESCO Biosphere Reserve. In contrast, the 707 hectares or 1,750 acres in the Phoenix Park in Dublin, has a ranger

staff of 11! The refusal to give me the figures is not personal. A year ago in the Dáil, Kerry TD John Brassil got an even bigger fudge when he put down the question about staffing numbers in the light of the ongoing rhododendron and deer threats. Minister Josepha Madigan said at the time, “330 work in the area of natural heritage through the NPWS of my Department”. The department takes on in the region of 70 seasonal staff during the year to assist the NPWS, she also said. I think she is speaking about guides. There was no detail at all in the reply. Donal Grady, the councillor and retired fire fighter, put the staffing problem in a nutshell last week. 15 years ago the fire service were able to call on “15 or 16 park rangers” along with other employ-

ees of the park to help fight wild fires. “We don’t have spotters now, people who would be on duty in the NPWS alerting us to fires at peak times like the spring,” Cllr Grady said. Staffing numbers now in the Council and other bodies are back to their pre-recession numbers. Why is there no one fighting for staff for the National Park? I have heard only John Buckley, the Sinn Fein candidate, on about it. Is it time that our very highly paid and expensed Oireachtas members got together and contributed a portion of their salaries – it need not be half – towards employing say four people in the Killarney National Park? The other option of course is that Kerry County Council could be asked to ring fence some of the rates and property tax money for the National Park, just as they did for the global business giants Fexco and Dairymaster.

Kerry Central Regional Water Treatment Plant with Lough Guitane in the background.

Second engineering award for Kerry water treatment plant The Kerry Central Regional Water Treatment Scheme has won a second prestigious award. On Friday night last, the Kerry Central Regional Water Treatment Scheme won the Civil Engineering Project of the Year Award 2019, at the Irish Construction Excellence Awards ceremony, which took place in the Mansion House, Dublin. The Irish Construction Excellence Awards provide an opportunity for the industry to showcase and reward best practice across the full range of construction disciplines and project categories. The project by Irish Water, in association with Kerry County Council, and under-

taken by Nicholas O'Dwyer Ltd., Tobin Consulting Engineers and Glan Agua Ltd, was chosen as the winner by an expert panel of judges from the construction world. This is the second national award for the Kerry Central Regional Water Treatment Scheme, having won the Engineers Ireland Engineering Project of the Year Award 2018, in November. The project is also in line for an international award. The Kerry Central Regional Water Supply Scheme has been shortlisted for the global Water Project of the Year. The Kerry project is one of four

finalists, along with projects from Saudi Arabia, Russia and America. Previous winners include Perth Groundwater Replenishment Scheme (Australia), Mujib Dam Water Supply Project (Jordan) and Abuja water supply project (Nigeria). The 2019 Global Water Awards will be presented at the Natural History Museum, London on April 9, as part of the 2019 Global Water Summit. The Kerry Central Regional Water Treatment Plant was officially opened on November 5, 2018 by Minister of State at the Department of Transport, Tourism and Sport, Brendan Griffin and Cllr Norma Foley, Cathaoirleach of Kerry County Council. The €30 million project provides a safe and secure water supply

for over 62,000 residents as well as industry and agriculture in the region, and serves the more than 1.2 million tourists who visit the region annually across Tralee, Killarney, Castleisland and Castlemaine. The scheme’s new water treatment plant is amongst the largest in the country and provides over 50 million litres of drinking water every day. As a result of the upgrade and investment by Irish Water, the scheme has been removed from EPA’s Remedial Action List - RAL is the list of ‘at risk’ water supplies. “Until the completion of this project, the local water supply lacked an effective system to treat the raw water abstracted from Lough Guitane,” Michael Tinsley, Infrastructure Portfolio Delivery Manager, Irish Water said. “This meant that the areas supplied by the Kerry Central Regional Water Supply Scheme were at risk due to the lack of sufficient water treatment.” “We are delighted the project has received this award. I’d like to thank all the project team including staff in Irish Water, Kerry County Council, Nicholas O’Dywer, Tobin Consulting and Glan Agua who met the size and scale of the challenge of this project and developed a solution that would safeguard the supply of safe, clean drinking water for so many people in Kerry. I also want to thank the Irish Construction Excellence Awards judges for this recognition which is hugely appreciated.”

Killarney pupils are put through their paces Two Killarney schools – Gaelscoil Faithleann and St Oliver's NS – recently hosted visits from Irish fitness expert Tom Dalton. | By Michelle Crean On Friday, over 240 pupils heard the message that physical fitness and healthy eating go hand-in-hand and should begin at an early age as part of the Fyffes Fit Squad campaign. Topics covered included demonstrations of exercises young people should do, advice on healthy eating, and tips on

how to use leisure time to stay physicaly fit. The pupils were put through their paces in a fun and interactive way with 45 to 60 minute sessions which included a dynamic warm up and cool down and session intensity specific to their needs and ability. The aim is to understand key elements to a movement, so it helps our bodies to

carry it out Proinsias MacCurtain, Principal of Gaelscoil Faithleann, explained. “We were delighted to welcome the Fitness Squad to our school, as fitness and healthy eating is so important, and it is really good that people adopt good habits at a young age. The exercises the children were doing with the Fit Squad were fun, and can be carried out in their own homes.” The Parents Council had registered for the initiative some time ago and were delighted to be chosen as one of the schools, Mary Carroll of the Parents Council added. “We were delighted to have the message of exercise, fitness and healthy eating put to the kids in a fun way – the more ways they hear it the better, as it is so important for our children’s mental and physical health.”

SWITCHING MORTGAGES Traditionally, Irish Customers have been slow in switching their mortgage provider. Historically customers remained with the one mortgage provider for the duration of their mortgage. This can be for periods up to 35 years in duration. It is a very worthwhile exercise in reviewing what options are available intermittently throughout the course of the lifetime of a mortgage. Significant savings can be made by reviewing all the available rates from the main lending institutions. The various lending institutions offer various rates and packages for new and/or existing clients many of which can be at reduced rates in comparison to what a customer is paying at present. Even a modest reduction in the interest rate per annum can lead to significant savings when you consider the length of time and the amount of capital that the saving will be based upon. It is important to consider whether or not a variable rate is the most attractive or whether or not a rate fixed for a period of time best suits needs of the particular clients.

It is important to research correctly and to compare let alone the rates that are being offered but also what the terms and conditions pertaining are. Furthermore, many lending institutions are now offering incentives to switch mortgages. Some lending institutions are offering to pay a contribution towards the legal costs involved. It is important that full research is carried out to ensure it is worthwhile to switch mortgages. The process of switching mortgages is not overly complicated to allow all the legal formalities to be concluded in a time period that best suits the client. If clients are contemplating switching mortgages, they should contact their solicitor to discuss the various options available to them. The above is a discussion piece only and does not purport to be legal advice and should not be relied upon as such. In respect of any specific circumstances, you should consult your solicitor to obtain specific legal advice and Terence F. Killarney people urged to show their ‘Flower Power’ The public are being urged to show their support for people living with cystic fibrosis (CF) and their families - by wearing a purple rose on Cystic Fibrosis Ireland’s (CFI) 65 Roses Day, today (Friday). The annual fundraising flag day – which derives its name from the way in which young children often first say the words "cystic fibrosis" – seeks to raise much-needed monies for CF services. It will see volunteers out in force across the county, including Killarney town. People can get behind the appeal by buying a purple rose, completing a 65 Roses Challenge or donating online at www.65RosesDay.ie. Among the well-known faces to lend their support to this very worthy cause,

and encouraging the public to rally behind it, are local TDs, Michael Healy-Rae, Danny Healy-Rae and John Brassil. Ireland has the highest incidence of CF in the world and some of the most severe types. There are almost 1,400 people living with CF in Ireland and the number is increasing each year as a result of improvements in treatment and care. According to recently-published statistics from the Cystic Fibrosis Registry of Ireland, there were 54 people with CF registered from Kerry in 2017.

U11 doubles title for Glenbeigh sisters It was a case of aces high for two Glenbeigh sisters who began their handball sporting career with the best possible outcome in Cavan at the weekend. | By Con Dennehy Maggie and Clodagh Quirke, students at Glenbeigh National School, were unbeatable when they represented Munster at the All-Ireland Cumann na mBunscoil Handball finals in Kingscourt, bringing home the prestigious U11 doubles title. This was a spectacular success for the duo who began playing the sport during the summer. “Before we travelled to Cavan we took part in the Munster championships in Broadford,” Maggie (10) said. “We were delighted and a little surprised to beat off teams from Limerick, Clare and Tipperary in our first major tournament. Following the medal presentation, it was announced we were part of the Munster team for the All-Ireland finals. We were thrilled with this honour.” The energy sapping sport that requires stamina, speed, agility and control of the ball that travels at speeds in excess of 35km per hour proved no obstacle for the Mid-Kerry girls. “Playing in the All-Ireland final was a big step up for us. We were playing more experienced players and had to work extremely hard for a win. In the first game we defeated Galway 15-8 and 15-12. It was more difficult against the

Ulster champions, Tyrone. We scraped through with a three-point victory,” said Clodagh (8). The final was a tense and exciting affair with the Kerry duo winning their first game 15-11 and in a pulsating second game edged ahead 15-14 to win the title at the expense of Kilkenny. Maggie and Clodagh were top of the class when they returned back to Glenbeigh this week. “They were all delighted we won the title and brought honour to the school and Glenbeigh Handball Club. We are lucky to have great coaches to teach us the skills of the game. They include Jack O’Shea, Christy Marty and our dad John Joe. We will now train for the U12 Kerry and Munster club competitions and just enjoy this great sport,” Clodagh added. Clodagh and Maggie are following in the footsteps of their famous father, John Joe Quirke, winner of the World Masters title in the USA last year. He is also the holder of 10 All-Ireland titles at various grades. With the 2021 World Championships taking place in Croke Park, it will come as no surprise if the names of Clodagh and Maggie Quirke are engraved on the winner’s trophy in the U12 doubles category.

Michael Shannon, from Lissivigeen, Killarney, will work as a volunteer teaching assistant in Kolkata, India for two months, from June 19 – August 19. He was inspired to go after he saw the work carried out by Suas Educational Development in these disadvantaged developing areas including supporting classroom learning, extra-curricular activities, giving one-to-one support to children through English. As well as educational support, Suas offers financial assistance and ongoing technical expertise to its partner schools as well as basic human rights education. Suas Educational Development is a registered Irish charity that supports access to quality education in Ireland, India and Zambia for over 10,000 children a year. When Michael learnt about their work he was keen to get involved to help give children in India, who are at high risk of child labour and early marriage, a better

future. Before he heads off Michael has to raise a minimum of €3,499 to cover basic costs such as accommodation, insurance and flights. And with vaccinations and training costs he needs to fundraise approximately another €1,000. To do this, the third year chemistry student, is organising a number of fundraising events in the coming weeks, including a church gate collection in Killarney, a non-uniform day in Lissivigeen NS and a coffee morning. “Even if I could help a few kids, it might have a knock on effect,” Michael told the Killarney Advertiser this week. “It will be tough but it will also challenge me.” So far Michael has raised €1,000 from a table quiz in college, a car boot sale and from his online fundraising page. To support Michael go to his page www.idonate.ie/indiavolunteerprogramme2019.

Coronas lead singer Danny O’Reilly was blown away by the acoustics at St Brendan’s Chapel following his appearance at The Sem’s annual concert on Tuesday night. O’Reilly was one of the guests of honour at the annual performance which is organised by local music legend Liam O’Connor and the school’s music teachers Mish O’Donoghue and Niamh O’Connell. The concert featured performances from students including the school choir and the group that made it to the Britain’s Got Talent auditions in the UK earlier this year. “Danny was outstanding, such a beautiful voice,” Mish said. “He was blown away by the venue and said it was a fabulous place. It was a fantastic experience for the boys, not many teenagers can say they performed on-stage with someone like Danny O’Reilly.” The group that made it to Britain’s Got Talent opened the show with a four-song performance including their signature

tune, ‘The Parting Glass’ which leads into ‘Step It Out Mary’. After the interval, the school choir took the stage, a highlight being their performance of ‘Giant’, by artists Calvin Harris and Rag’n’Bone Man. “All of the boys performed very well and it is impossible to pick out a standout moment,” added Mish, who has been organising the concerts for the last six years. “The boys who went to BGT showed exactly why they made it to England.” As well as music performances, former students and local celebrities spoke, including former Irish and Munster rugby hero Tony Buckley, who talked about his battle with depression. “Tony’s talk about how he coped with mental illness really resonated with many people who were there,” Mish said.

GARDEN MAGIC

Gardening - By Debby Looney

Debby is available for advice and garden consultations, just call 086 6088156 or email barnhillky@gmail.com

Small spaces can create delicious vegetables A question I am often asked is, how much space do I need to grow veg? The answer is simple, if you have a square foot you can grow something. Starting with the smallest possible space: a jar where you can sprout seeds, which are full of nutrients and super tasty, a great addition to any salad. To grow sprouting seeds, all you need is seeds, I recommend using organic ones, and a jar. Rinse the seeds twice a day, but leave a small amount of water in the jar. Tilt it to a 45 degree angle and place in a bright spot. Within a few days your seeds will be ready to eat. Suitable varieties are radish, cress, kale, mustard, fenugreek and alfalfa. There are really easy to use jars and trays available for sprouting seeds at health food shops. The next step up is growing micro greens. These are grown in a tray of soil, again I recommend organic compost and seeds. This is ideal if the only space you have is a windowsill. Peas, kale and wheatgrass are popular choices. Sow them close together, as you will be harvesting when the shoots are young, only 10cm or so in height. Again, these are full of nutrients, and often sweeter than their full sized counter parts! Stepping up a size again, there are grow tables available, which are becoming increasingly popular. They are usually at

table height and are ideal for growing lettuce and herbs. They can be kept indoors or outside on a patio or balcony. A variety can be grown in them and I recommend a mix of lettuce, radish, carrots, spring onions and maybe a dwarf French bean. Ensure adequate watering, but more importantly, do not over water. These tables come with clear vented covers, which are very handy for sheltering young plants. New on the market is a brand called VegTrug, which make beautiful pieces of vegetable furniture – that’s the only way I can describe it – in various models and sizes. They are well put together and the finish on them is fabulous. They are deep, and come in a range of sizes. One very handy one is a herb box, which has compartments – barriers to stop the mint from taking over! There are other brands of vegetable tables also, but the thing to watch out for is the type of timber they are made from and the depth. Anything shallower than 20cm will not hold enough compost to grow tasty veg. Also, the timber should always be pressure treated. Veg can be grown on the patio in pots, on the windowsill in troughs, or even hanging baskets can be used! The key is to get the right advice on varieties, for example, on a patio grow a dwarf tomato such as ‘Totem’, or you will be fighting for space!

THE POWER OF ADVERTISING “My late father, Jackie Healy-Rae, always advertised his weekly Saturday clinic in Scotts Hotel at 3pm in the Killarney Advertiser. I continued this tradition since 2011 as I also appreciate the power of local advertising. To be a national politician, you have to be elected locally. The local message is more important than any other media outlet for me. I really believe the people appreciate, so much, the local news, pictures, death notices and information in our local advertiser and nothing could replace it. Small businesses can afford local advertising as it comes within their budget. When the advertiser comes out, there are literally people waiting at shops and outlets to pick it up. This proves how important it is in our community. The Killarney Advertiser has been in existence since 1973, 46 years. I am quite confident that despite the changes in modern technology, the Killarney Advertiser will proudly celebrate its 100th anniversary in 54 years and I would like to be around for the celebrations”

“We are proud and privileged to say that we have worked with the Killarney Advertiser since its inception. They offer a powerful blend of creative and collaborative adverts that exceed expectations. More importantly, it is always a pleasure to work with the team. Killarney Advertiser is a company on point with a highly-developed sense of community and social responsibility. A WEEKLY ROUND-UP OF NEWS • VIEWS FROM KERRY AND AROUND THE WORLD

INSPIRED BY DANNY CASEY

Unique day of Irish sport in London A charity rugby event, organised by the Kerry Association London, will be full of new ideas.

Brexit horror show with Halloween deadline Brexit has been delayed until October 31 - we think! Reports in the national and British media tell us that the UK Government and British prime-minister Theresa May will give us a long-hot summer of Brexit noise to look forward to. Two weeks after Britain was supposed to leave the EU on its own self-imposed deadline, the country has now been given a stay of execution by Europe.

Trump CORNER

The new target date is Halloween, but that may have changed by the time you are a reading this. It is all getting a bit tiresome now but what does all this mean for the businesses and people of Killarney. The damage is probably already done, British tourists will already have their holidays planned and will have, by now,

decided if they are coming to Ireland. It would be hard to blame them if they stayed at home, that is not our fault, more the fault of their own inept Government telling them they need things like insurance green cards to drive in Ireland or any European country. What we need now is a full-on campaign telling British holidaymakers that Ireland is open for business and that they are welcome here.

Trump appoints new ambassador to Ireland One of the most obvious oversights in President Trump’s term of office is set to be corrected this week with the appointment of a new ambassador to Ireland. The role has been vacant since Barrack Obama’s departure as President when Kevin O’Malley left the office. In the interim Reece Smyth was the chargé d’affaires of the US Embassy in Ireland. Trump is set to announce Edward J

Crawford as the new ambassador. The Ohio-based millionaire has strong connections to Cork city where his grandparents came from, and he was once named as ‘Person of the Year’ by the Mayo Association in Cleveland, Ohio. A confirmation hearing was due to take place in Washington DC yesterday (Thursday), just after the Killarney Advertiser went to press. Crawford was due to appear before the Senate Foreign Relations

The newly established Kerry Munster Stags, formed specially for the event, will feature key players from Abbeyfeale, Listowel, Castleisland, Tralee, Dingle, Killarney and Killorglin rugby clubs. The amalgamated teams will play the Irish Nomads, the amateur side of the London Irish Rugby Club. The event will take place at London Irish Rugby Club’s training ground at Hazelwood Drive in Sunbury-onThames on May 4. The curtain raiser is a Gaelic Football match between Fulham Irish and St Kiernan’s GAA clubs. The latter club always had strong Kerry connections since its foundation in 1984 and the latter one of the city’s youngest clubs founded by Irish people from several different counties. “A unique day of Irish sport in London will take place on Saturday May 4,” said Kerry Association London secretary Johnny Walsh. “Such a battle between Kerry and London has never been seen before and this weekend will be the first time to see it.” Adding to the list of firsts, the St Kiernan’s versus Fulham Irish match will be the first GAA match to be held of the hallowed turf of Hazelwood Park. Committee where his nomination was set to be ratified. The vacancy at the US ambassador’s residence in Dublin passed the two year mark on Sunday, January 20 of this year. Crawford was first nominated by the president in September of last year but was then re-nominated when the newly elected Congress took its seats in January. Crawford, a successful Cleveland, Ohio businessman, was formally announced last September as President Trump’s choice for the ambassador role that has long-symbolised the close relationship between the United States and Ireland.

Hospital first to introduce robot-assisted spine surgery Doctors at the Mater Private Hospital will start using robots to assist with complicated spinal surgery. Patients undergoing spinal fusion surgery could experience significantly less post-operative pain and much quicker recovery times, thanks to the addition of a new surgical guidance robot at the hospital’s Orthopaedic and Spine Centre. The new robotic guidance technology assists surgeons with the precise and accurate placement of spinal screws during spinal fusion surgery – reducing the potential for complications. Its 3D visualisation and navigation features will allow spine surgeons at the Mater Private Hospital to complete more complex and delicate spinal proce-

dures with improved patient outcomes, reduced blood loss and muscle damage during surgery. The Mater Private Hospital is the first facility in Ireland to offer robot-assisted spine surgery, and one of just four centres in Europe using the highly advanced Excelsius GPS(TM) robot. “The introduction of the robot is a fantastic addition to our spine surgery capabilities at the Mater Private Hospital. Robot-assisted surgery is a new, emerging area that will become the standard of care in the years ahead,” Mr. Joseph Butler, Consultant Spine Surgeon, said. “As an early adopter of such technology, the Mater Private Hospital is ensuring that our patients are receiving the highest quality care using the most advanced methods and practices available.”

MOVIE MAGIC: Tralee is getting a sprinkling of movie magic this week as trainees begin work with an impressive group of industry professionals to make their first ever ‘Mentored Movie’ in Kerry’s ETB’s National Digital Skills Centre.

Hollywood comes to Tralee this week

Tralee is getting a sprinkling of movie magic this week as Brian Nolan and his team of Broadcast Production trainees begin work with an impressive group of industry professionals to make their first ever ‘Mentored Movie’ in Kerry’s ETB’s National Digital Skills Centre in the Monavalley Campus. It is all taking place in the environs of the Monavalley campus from April 8-13. A new concept for the training centre, the mentored movie brings seasoned industry professionals together with Film/ TV trainees to collaborate on filming a feature – in this case – a comedy series entitled ‘TX’. Cheers, Seinfeld and 3rd Rock from the Sun staff writer Andy Cowen was involved in mentoring the writing group and developed the initial storyline. Claire Cassidy (Director) and Eve O'Mahony (Producer) adding finishing touches to the script and this year the first person to commit to the crew was Mo Flam (Black Swan, I Am Legend) followed by Andrea O'Connor (Spotlight, Daredevil, Sex in the City), Ciaran Tanham (Red Rock, Love/ Hate, RAW) and Noel Quinn (The Tudors, What Richard Did, Frank). Backed up by Diarmuid Galvin, Rupert MacCarthy Morrogh, Orla Finucane, Girts Balodis, Aoife

John Delaney - friend or foe? He never seems too far away from controversy these days and his inability to explain why he needed to hand the Football Association of Ireland (FAI) a €100,000 bridging-loan to an Oireachtas committee in the Dáil on Wednesday must raise further questions.

Famous Lighting Director Mo Flam.

O'Shea, John Lyons, Sean Smith plus other friends. In other news, RTE Jr will be based in the National Digital Skills Centre for a number of weeks in May shooting two new television shows.

But, before we all call for his head on a plate, it is worth remembering what he has done for grassroot soccer, especially in Kerry. Tralee’s Mounthawk now has two pitches, proper dressing rooms and floodlights. When Castleisland FC wanted a new all-weather pitch he allocated €100,000 of FAI funding towards the project. These are just two examples and club-level soccer in Kerry is all the better thanks to Delaney’s efforts.

John Delaney.

The majority of those calling for his head are connected with the bigger League of Ireland clubs. In order to fund grassroots soccer he had to balance the books by reducing or removing funding from bigger outfits. I don’t know what went on behind closed doors at the FAI’s head-office in Lansdowne Road, whatever happened Sports Ireland said it was in contravention of its funding polices.

Taisce’s teaching material

TD Danny Healy-Rae has this week hit out at the Government calling them anti-rural and anti-farmer for their support of An Taisce’s latest teaching materials. This week, a controversial green schools teacher resource pack, produced by An Taisce, was distributed to schools, advising pupils to reduce the volume of meat and dairy consumed - stating that meat consumption increases carbon footprint. “I am absolutely appalled and very angry about the latest development that An Taisce have provided teaching materials to schools encouraging students to reduce the volume of meat and dairy consumed,” Mr Healy-Rae said. “In light of all the pain and misfortune that An Taisce have already inflicted on young people and others in rural Ireland by blocking planning applications in rural areas where people just look for a basic right to put a roof over their heads, it is absolutely ridiculous and downright unfair for the Government and Minister Bruton supporting this latest attack on farmers where children through our schools are being encouraged to reduce the volume of meat and dairy

consumed. “Has this ever been discussed by the Department of Education as part of our education policies, are parents allowed to have any say in what An Taisce and now the Government are doing, and most importantly are the medical professionals going to be consulted on the adverse effects this advice could have on our children’s health?,” he said. “It’s very clear that this Government, who are supported by Fianna Fáil in office, are anti-rural, anti-farmer and will be judged as such in the very near future when they go before the electorate.”

Take the stress out of going to your next big event by having your make-up done by a professional make-up artist (MUA). I often hear from my clients that they are worried about getting make-up done as they fear being too made up. However, this doesn’t have to be the case – by having a chat with your MUA before starting, you can really discuss your finished look. From there it should be easy to get the final look right. The beauty about having it done by a professional is that it will last all day and into the night. The prepping of the skin and using the correct moisturisers and primers for your skin type will prolong the length of time the make-up will last, and when we say last - the entire time it should look as if

you just had it done. If you’re a Mother of the Bride, we highly recommend having a course of facials before the big day. It’s better to have the skin glowing and all dehydration sorted before having your make-up done. Preparation is essential to get the best results. Having the make-up done in the comfort of your own home, or a salon, can make you feel really pampered and ready to enjoy the day or event ahead. For more information or to make an appointment, call Jill on 064 6632966.

Celtic Whiskey Bar & Larder

Seasonal Irish cuisine and whiskey from across the globe

More than 1,200 bottles of whiskey line the brightly-lit shelves at the Celtic Whiskey Bar & Larder in Killarney. The ‘Uisce Beatha’ is in good company with whiskey from across the globe - single malts from Scotland, blended malts from Japan, bourbons from America and the more peculiar from developing whisky markets. An eclectic range, but Irish whiskey takes centre-stage, as does local, seasonal Irish cuisine. Head Chef, Alan MacDonald, combines his experience in Michelin Star kitchens with his travelling adventures across Azerbaijan, Spain and Moscow to enrich the seasonal menus. There are unique quirks in the menus like the Black Pudding Sausage Rolls, but there is a clear ode to traditional Irish cuisine and gaelic culinary styles. MacDonald really utilizes all that the land and sea in The Kingdom

has to offer, from the Glenbeigh mussels sourced from family-run Glenbeigh Shellfish to the Kerry herb crusted rump of lamb and the local rhubarb that fills the pavlova along with chantilly and candied peanuts. Lunch is served daily followed by an evening menu until 9.45pm with group bookings welcomed. Another striking note is the fortified wine suggestions that adorn the evening and dessert menus. The Coravin wine system allows for some truly exciting wines to be tasted, unusually, by the glass. Over 60 Irish craft gins are available along with 12 craft beers, a bespoke cocktail menu and some very rare bottlings from the lessknown spirit categories.

Keep calm and focused as you approach the final exam hurdle It has been a busy term for Junior and Leaving Certificate students and a break has never been so badly needed.

Niamh Dwyer, Guidance Counsellor in Scoil Phobail Sliabh Luachra, Rathmore and PRO of Kerry Branch of Institute of Guidance Counsellors

Having completed Mocks in February, the past couple of weeks have been filled with Orals, practicals and completion of project work, during which time homework and essential revision is rarely far from your minds. At this stage many of you are exhausted, stressed and some of you quite overwhelmed at what you have left to do. Use the Easter holidays to gather your breath, re-energise yourself and get plenty of quality-study done. The end is in sight, once you return to school after the Easter break you will have less than 40 days before the exams begin on June 5. Consequently, it is essential that you use the Easter break wisely to get maximum benefit in terms of revision and exam preparation. For students who have been studying hard - keep it up! Keep calm and focused as you approach the final hurdle. For students who wish that they had done more at this stage - focus on the

finish line and don’t throw in the towel. You still have time to make a substantial difference to your exam performance. If you are in the category of students who are overwhelmed and panicking breathe! It is not too late. Do not look at everything you have to do, instead break it down to the essentials. Ensure you have all your notes organised, do out a list of the topics for each subject and start with the guaranteed topics or questions in each subject. Regardless of how much you have done at this stage, the following tips may help as you head into the Easter holidays and embark on the final term. uB e very disciplined with the social media: It is the single biggest distraction for students. Keep it to an absolute minimum from now until the exams to maintain focus and concentration levels. uW rite out a daily timetable for revision for Easter. Work your days of study like school days: Start early, take breaks and finish early in the evening to give yourself some down-time. If you stick to this schedule you should be able to afford to take a couple of days off to recharge the batteries. uD uring the holidays, use the study pattern that works best for you. Some students like to take a subject per day and revise a number of topics related to that subject. You may also want to work a study pattern over two-day cycles, covering all subjects in two-hour slots. If you find it difficult to concentrate, then you may prefer to do shorter revision sessions of 45 minutes to one hour in each subject per study day. When you return to school,

try to give each subject a revision slot of 30 to 40 minutes per night. You will be getting less homework at that stage to facilitate your own revision. u Don’t prioritise any one subject. All subjects that you are counting for points need attention, particularly those at higher level. u Review your mock papers. See where you lost the main marks and make note of where the gaps in your learning are at this stage. u Talk to teachers about areas or topics you are particularly worried about and they will give you good guidance and clarity. u Study the exam papers and marking schemes carefully so that you know how the marks are distributed. They can be found on www.examinations. ie. u Get used to examination terminology. Highlight keywords in exam questions and ensure that you are clear about what they mean. Examine sample answers and make a list of keywords and vocabulary used. Every subject has certain terminology that is commonly used in discussing, critically analysing and developing answers. Develop a bank of words and phrases that are common to each subject and use them in any sample answers you

complete from now on. quotes and definitions, you need to record them on your phone and listen back, leave a gap in the recording so you can repeat the information back to yourself. u For languages, practice listening comprehensions. u Every revision session should end with looking at an exam question on that topic, make a quick plan for how you would attempt the answer and then check it against the marking schemes. Many students find www. studyclix.ie very useful for this aspect of revision. u Stay in school as long as possible. There is temptation to stay at home to study alone in the last few weeks. Important revision happens in classrooms at that stage and it can be very isolating spending many hours alone studying. the necessary infrastructure to make it easier for people to play their part.” More than 50 high power charging hubs are being funded on motorway and national road sites. These hubs will be able to charge between two and eight vehicles simultaneously and are capable of providing up to 100km of electric driving range in as little as six minutes. In addition to the charging hubs, up to 50 locations will also see Standard 22kW AC chargers upgraded to 50kW DC fast chargers, providing additional fast charging capacity around the country. This network will be able to facilitate the public charging requirements of hundreds of thousands of vehicles.

Old photo turns up after appeal A local vintage club is looking for photos and memorabilia connected with the 1954 World Ploughing Championships in Fossa. Members of Killarney Valley Classic & Vintage Club, who are also members of Kerry Ploughing, are behind a plan to help National Ploughing Association to build a peace cairn to com-

memorate the 1954 World Championships that took place in Fossa 65 years ago. Tom Leslie is a member of both the local ploughing association and the

vintage club. He appealed to readers of the Killarney Advertiser to search for artefacts connected to the original event – the second ever World Ploughing Championship – so he could create a display alongside the peace cairn when it gets unveiled on May 11. As a result, local man Diarmuid O’Mahony found newspaper cuttings of

the October 5 1954 edition of the Cork Examiner and dropped it off at the club’s annual run at the Faha Court on Sunday. “I saw the request in the Killarney Advertiser,” Diarmuid said. “My father is in one of these photos.” Anyone else with old photos or memorabilia can contact Tom Leslie on 087 238 3809.

In loving memory of Stephen O’Sullivan, Late of Slievenamon House, Minish, Killarney, Who passed away on the 12th of April 2012.

Love’s greatest gift - remembrance.

Day by day I think of you, How can all of this be true? I can’t believe you’re really gone, I still can’t accept it, Even after so long.

A bouquet of beautiful memories Sprayed with a million tears Wishing God would have spared you If just for a few more years. It does not take a special day For me to think of you Each Mass I hear, each prayer I say Is offered up for you. Loved and sadly missed by your loving wife Joan. We seldom ask for miracles, But today just one would do, To have the front door open, And to see you walking through. We travel to your graveside, Some flowers we lay with care, But the hardest thing to do, Is turn and leave you there.

Our hearts are full of memories, With pride we speak your name, Though life must go on without you, It will never be the same, Those special days will not return when we were all together, But the love and memories in our hearts, Will stay with us forever. Sadly missed by your mother Nellie, brothers Timmie and Donie, sisters Noreen, Margaret, Eileen, Mary, sisterin-law, brothers-in-law, nieces, nephews, grandnieces and grandnephews.

Too good to be forgotten. Loved and missed by your daughter Yvonne, son-in-law Paudie and grandson Tommie.

In loving memory of John Joe Foley, Barleymount Fossa, Who sadly passed away on the 13th April 2013. Silent thoughts sincere and true, From a family who thought the world of you, No longer in our lives to share, But in our hearts you are always there.

Lonely is the home without you, Life is not the same, All the world would be like heaven, If we could have you back again.

In loving memory of Thomas O’Brien, Late of 10 Maple Drive, Killarney. Who died on the 15th of April 2018. Have you ever lost an Uncle, Or ever felt the pain, Or ever shed the bitter tears, That drop like falling rain. If you never have I hope you never do, For when I lost my uncle Thomas, My hearts just broke in two. One gift in life you cannot buy, A gift so rare and true, Is the gift like the precious uncle, Like the uncle I had in you. I loved you then, I love you still, Throughout my life I always will. Loved and remembered always by your nephew Jim, Catriona and Silver. xxx Rest In Peace Remember him with a smile today, He wasn’t one for tears, Reflect instead on memories, Of all the happy years, Recall to mind the way he spoke, And all the things he said, His strength, his wisdom, the way he was, Remember them instead. O’BRIEN

O’BRIEN

In loving memory of Thomas O’Brien, Late of 10 Maple Drive, Killarney. Who died on the 15th of April 2018 and who’s Birthday we remember on the 10th of April. I thought of you today, But that is nothing new, I thought about you yesterday, And will tomorrow too. I think of you in silence, And make no outward show, For what it meant to lose you, Only those who love you know. I do it every day, It’s just the heartache of losing you, That will never go away. Always remembered and never forgotten by your brother Richard and wife Bridget. UNCLE I remember when I was small, And you were kind and strong, You really haven’t changed a bit, As life as moved along. I knew that you were thoughtful, And today, you’re still the same, You’re always helping others, And that has never changed. You’ve always been right there for us, In good times and in bad, You laughed with us in happy times, And cried with us in sad.

1ST ANNIVERSARY O’BRIEN

I think of things you used to say, And all that you would do, At some point, every single day, My thoughts return to you. To lose you was a bitter wrench, The pain cut to my core, I cried until my tears ran out, And then I cried some more.

1ST ANNIVERSARY & BIRTHDAY REMEMBRANCE

You are a special Uncle, as special as can be, More than that- you’ve been a friend, A cherished friend to me. Always remembered and never forgotten by your niece’s Clarise, Doll and Cianna.

In loving memory of Thomas O’Brien, Late of 10 Maple Drive, Killarney. Who died on the 15th of April 2018. Father There is always a face before me, A voice we would love to hear, A smile we will always remember, Of a Father we loved so dear, Deep in our hearts lies a picture, More precious than silver or gold, Its a picture of you Father, Whose memory will never grow old. Loved and remembered from Thomas, Aishling and granddaughter baby Doll.

In loving memory of Thomas O’Brien, Late of 10 Maple Drive, Killarney. Who died on the 15th of April 2018 and who’s Birthday we remember on the 10th of April. God bless the Mother who has lost a part of herself now, Her child is gone, and yet she knows, She must go on somehow. She’ll never be who she was once, Before her child was taken, And some days she can’t help but fee, Her heart has been forsaken. They say you give the hardest tasks, To those you know are strong, But her task is so painful, Lord, It’s one that lasts lifelong. Please help her rise each time she falls, Give her courage for her fears, Have angels hover ever near, To dry her endless tears. Keep her close, within your arm, Each moment they’re apart, Please give her comfort while she grieves, God, soothe her aching heart.

Loved and remembered by Moma and Mike. x

Big Thomas You were a family man, Who put your family first, You worked hard to, Provide for me and your five sons, You could make friends wherever you went, With a big smile or hand to shake.

On a quite Sunday morning, You heard the Angels call, You took the hand of Jesus, And quietly left us all, In a world full of people, We sometimes feel alone, The day God called you home.

You loved to go out playing cards, And bowling, Your proudest moment Was when you held your Granddaughter Doll, For the first time. One thing you always said, Was always be proud of who you are, Stay close and remember, Ye are the bosses. Sleep tight Big Thomas, Daddy we love you. Your loving wife Christina & Sons xxx

Do or die for Glenflesk and Spa | By Adam Moynihan

It’s D-Day for two of East Kerry’s main Intermediate hopefuls Things are looking up for last year’s beaten finalists Glenflesk after they secured another crucial two points by beating Desmonds 2-15 to 2-7 in Castleisland, but it will all be for nought if they come up short in Sunday’s showdown with fellow table-toppers John Mitchels in Glenflesk. Mitchels have a far superior points difference thanks to consecutive blowouts over Beaufort and Desmonds so nothing less than a win will do for new manager Paud O’Donoghue and his charges. Glenflesk trailed by a point with nine minutes to go in the first half of their clash with Desmonds last weekend but promising youngster Patrick Darcy popped up with a goal to swing the tie in their favour. Some accurate

kicking from the ever-reliable Darragh Roche kept the opposition at bay and when Darcy goaled again with five minutes to play, the game was won. The visitors eventually ran out eightpoint winners, 2-15 to 2-7. Great credit must also go to the Glenflesk rearguard who limited the hosts to just three points (two from play) in the entire second half. If the opening two weekends of football are anything to go by, John Mitch-

els are likely to pose a far more serious threat. The Ballyseedy club built up a commanding 0-11 to 0-2 lead by the halfway stage of their clash with Beaufort as Alan O’Donoghue, Wayne Duggan, James Sheehy, Shane O’Connor, Thomas Kearns and Michael Kelliher all found the target. Mitchels continued to dominate into the wind in the second period and although a late Beaufort goal added a touch of respectability from their point of view, the Tralee men romped home with nine points to spare (0-17 to 1-5). This result coupled with their opening round annihilation of Desmonds certainly indicates that Mitchels are the form team in this year’s Intermediate but Glenflesk have also turned a few heads so Sunday’s Group 4 decider has all the makings of a classic. The return of Jeff O’Donoghue, who was forced to sit out the Beaufort game, is a major boost for St Agatha’s and with key forwards Darragh Roche

and Brian O’Donoghue also moving well, they will fancy their chances of toppling the current group leaders. Home advantage could be the difference. VERDICT: Glenflesk by two.

SPA UNDER PRESSURE

Spa must be sick of the sight of Templenoe. The small club from the south eliminated them from last year’s Intermediate by defeating them in the final round of the group phase and this year they could be the cause of Spa’s downfall once again. Templenoe emerged victorious in last weekend’s Group 2 opener between the pair (3-12 to 1-16) and although Spa aren’t quite out of the running just yet, they now find themselves in an unenviable position. Nothing short of four points from four will do from here on in and while you would expect them to handle Laune Rangers in Round 3, it’s this weekend’s match-up that could be the problem.

67

Ivor Flynn’s team will travel to Glenbeigh on Saturday evening to take on a decent Glenbeigh/Glencar side who made light work of close rivals Laune Rangers in their first game of this year’s championship. With former Kerry captain Darran O’Sullivan pulling the strings, Glenbeigh/Glencar will fancy their chances – especially at home – but Spa can take heart from their last trip to the seaside. A year ago, almost to the day, the Killarney club travelled west to take on the same opposition in Division 1 of the County League (also on the back of a defeat to Templenoe) and they managed to come home with the spoils after a fine 2-13 to 1-12 win. In recent weeks, Spa started well against Templenoe and finished well against Legion. They will need a more complete performance this weekend to keep their championship aspirations alive. VERDICT: Spa by three.

EK clubs feeling the heat If it’s true what they say and a good start is half the battle, Legion, Rathmore, Kilcummin, Spa, Firies, Listry, Currow and Fossa have some serious scrapping to do. | By Adam Moynihan For each of the above teams, another setback this weekend will officially kill off their 2019 Club Championship aspirations at the earliest possible stage. And although players and management won’t be talking about it just yet, they will all be acutely aware that a second loss would leave them contemplating a fate far worse than simply not winning the competition out. If they fall short again in Round 2, relegation to a lower grade will all of a sudden become a very real prospect indeed.

SENIOR

Dr Crokes are one of the few East Kerry clubs to escape from last weekend with a positive result and they will be mightily relieved to have seen off old foes Legion after a back-and-forth game in the Park. Legion led 0-16 to 1-12 in the 56th minute after Tom Moriarty kicked his third point of the afternoon but Tony Brosnan equalised shortly after with a free.

2018 All-Ireland-winning Kerry minor Patrick Darcy scored two goals in Glenflesk's victory over Desmonds. Pic: Séamus Healy.

The marauding Cian Gammell went for the jugular in the 60th minute but he was unfortunate to see his shot striking the post, and Brosnan had the last say in injury time when he kicked the winner from another placed ball. Crokes will now be hoping to take another positive step towards the final when they host Rathmore on Sunday, while the Legion need to bounce back against group leaders Kerins O’Rahilly’s in Derreen. Rahilly’s overcame a six-point half-time deficit to beat Rathmore on Sunday, 0-10 from former Kerry forward Jack Savage proving crucial for the Tralee club as they ran out 1-17 to 3-9 winners. In Group 1, reigning All-Ireland Intermediate champions Kilcummin lost by the bare minimum to Kenmare in Lewis Road (1-12 to 0-16) and they now need to beat Austin Stacks away from home to stay in the hunt for the final.

INTERMEDIATE

Glenflesk will secure a place in the semi-final if they defeat Mitchels but the other East Kerry teams at this grade

are facing an uphill battle to avoid elimination. Spa’s first round defeat to Templenoe leaves them requiring snookers in Group 2, although victory over Glenbeigh/Glencar would keep them alive for another week at least. Currow, meanwhile, will need to beat St Mary’s at home to stay in the running. Newly-promoted Beaufort are looking over their shoulder following tough losses to Glenflesk and John Mitchels and Éanna O’Malley’s men need a result against Desmonds to avoid the relegation playoffs.

JUNIOR PREMIER Gneeveguilla are in a promising position in Group 3 after their impressive 1-13 to 1-11 win over Ballydonoghue and they can eliminate East Kerry rivals Listry by beating them at home this weekend. In Group 1, Firies must beat Ballymac on Saturday night while in Group 4, Séamus Moynihan’s Fossa are also desperate for a result. After losing to St Pat’s by a goal last weekend, they take on St Senan’s on Sunday knowing that nothing less than two points will suffice.

Three Crokes players named in AIB Club Team of the Year The second annual AIB GAA Club Player Awards took place in Croke Park on Saturday night as the top 30 club hurlers and footballers in the country were honoured for their individual performances that lit up the 2018/2019 Senior Club Championships. Gavin White, Kieran O’Leary and Tony Brosnan, Kerry champions with Dr Crokes, received three AIB GAA Club Player Awards - a fine testament to both their clubs and the community that supported them throughout the year. 22-year-old White has been a consistent performer for the Crokes since bursting onto the scene and he has already forced his way into the Kerry starting 15. The athletic centre back shone for the Lewis Road club throughout their 2018/19 campaign and he will captain The Kingdom in this year’s championship. Veteran corner forward Kieran O’Leary

had a fantatic year for the Black and Amber and he led by example by scoring 2-2 against Moyle Rovers in Munster as well as 0-4 from play in the All-Ireland semi-final. Sharp-shooting youngster Tony Brosnan finished his provincial and All-Ireland campaign with 30 points in total and he also starred in his club’s win over Mullinalaghta, notching up 0-6 with four of those points coming from play. AIB, in their 28th year as proud sponsors of the AIB Club Championships, celebrated the evening with the players, their friends, family, and GAA representatives at a ceremony which was hosted by GAA

broadcaster Damian Lawlor. The winning players were selected and voted for by national and regional sports media, based on their overall performance throughout the 2018/2019 provincial and All-Ireland club season. “On behalf of AIB, I would like to congratulate all of the winners tonight,” Denis O’Callaghan, AIB Head of Retail Banking, said. “The awards honour some of the greatest players across Ireland who have shown unwavering commitment to their club and AIB has been privileged to support them every step of the way. “The strength of the GAA lies in its clubs and their people. There would be no games without the players and tonight we award those 30 players who have put on exemplary performances in this year’s Club Championships, while celebrating all those players right around the country who represent their clubs with immense pride and dedication.”

Former Rally of the Lakes winner takes his first Circuit of Kerry victory Cork’s Darragh O’Riordan took his first Rose Hotel Circuit of Kerry Rally win on Sunday after a dramatic and action-packed day in North Kerry. | By Sean Moriarty The former winner of the Rally of the Lakes was one of three different leaders over the course of the nine-stage rally but survived as his rivals either fell off the road or retired with mechanical problems. O’Riordan, driving a Ford Fiesta World Rally Car, eventually finished over a minute clear of Tipperary-based Mitsubishi Lancer driver Pat O’Connell after early leader Ed Synan retired his Subaru Impreza with transmission problems and afternoon leader Pádraig Egan put his similar machine into a Mount Eagle ditch. A lot was expected of local heroes Mike Quinn and Tony Healy who were making their World Rally Car debut. Their event was fraught with problems, however; a timing glitch and a clutch issue on the start line of stage one meant they did not get off the line until the third time of asking. Nevertheless, they were fourth fastest on the first run over Mount Eagle and slotted into to third overall after the opening Headley’s Bridge stage. Unfortunately, an engine problem on the road section between stage two and three, at Knight’s Mountain, ended their challenge. The top Kerry competitor on the event was London-based Faha co-driver Shane Buckley who guided Welsh visitor Tomas Davies to an impressive third overall in a Ford Escort Mk2. The best Kerry crew were Ed Murphy and Keith McCarthy driving another Escort.

They finished ninth overall. Kerry Motor Club honours went to Tim Enright and Stephen Buckley in another Escort while the Killarney and District Motor Club honours went to Charlie and Johnny Hickey who were 12th in another Escort. Tom Relihan and Maurice McElligott are the provisional leaders of the Moriarty’s Centra Kingdom of Kerry Rally Championship after winning class 13 in their Ford Escort.

HOW THE KERRY CREWS FARED

Tadhg O'Sullivan/John McCarthy and Dave Slattery/Denis Coffey finished 13th and 14th respectively in another pair of Escorts. Pat Barry/Kevin Tydings were 19th in yet another Escort while Darren Young and Seán Walsh were 21st and second in class 11F in their Honda Civic. Pa Naughton and John Cahill were third in the same class in another Civic. It was a special day for young Jamie O'Rourke who was competing in his first rally alongside his uncle Paddy. The O’Rourke family won the James O’Rourke Memorial Trophy, named after Jamie’s father and Paddy’s brother. They finished second in class 11R. Bob Moran and Elaine Ní Shé were third in the same class, just 0.5 of a second behind the O’Rourkes after one hour of rallying. Seán Hickey and Noel Fleming drove their Toyota Starlet to first in class 12. Co-driver Denny Greaney from Cordal

Todd Falvey from Rathmore and his Cork-based co-driver Iarla McCarthy finished second in the historic section of Sunday’s Rose Hotel Circuit of Kerry Rally. Pic: Ray Corkery.

finished second in Class 2 alongside DJ Browne in a Citroen C2 R2. Eddie Kennelly/Timmy Murphy survived an off-road excursion on the second run over Knight’s Mountain to finish 39th overall, one place ahead of Mike Kenny and Gene Stack. Katie Quinn, daughter of Mike, and Ciara O’Connell were second in Class 2 in their Honda. Mike Dowling and Laura Mulrooney were 47th overall in their beautifully-prepared Ford Escort Mk1. They finished one place ahead of Ollie Lynch and Linda O’Neill in their Honda Civic. Vincent O'Shea/Eoin O'Donoghue had to resort to Rally 2 rules to get their BMW M1 to the finish. Ross and Joey Hilliard were on their first rally and also had to resort to Rally 2 rules to get their Volkswagen Polo to the finish after an earlier radiator problem forced them to miss the middle loop of stages. Gearóid O'Regan and Tony Roche were 60th out of the 68th finishers, a testament to the massive retirement rate as over 40 cars failed to complete the course.

HISTORIC SECTION

Limerick’s Maurice Meskell and Stephen Meskell won the historic section of the rally driving a Ford Escort prepared by local mechanic Brendan Brosnan. They would not have been able to start the rally only for rival and local man PJ O’Dowd donating his spare gearbox to the cause. Todd Falvey and Iarla McCarthy were the best local crew in the historic section, finishing 55 seconds behind the Meskells in their Escort. O’Dowd and co-driver John Young were third in their Talbot Sunbeam despite brake problems early in the day. The remainder of the top six was made up entirely of crews with a Kerry interest. Donal O’Connor (Rathmore) and Pat Cashman (Killarney) were fourth in their Ford Escort MK1. James Hall (Cork) and Tony McCarthy (Lixnaw) put their Audi Quattro into a Knight’s Mountain field on their way to fifth while David Griffin (Keel) survived a late clutch issue to bring his Toyota Corolla home sixth. Donagh Crowley and Denis Nagle won the junior section in their Toyota Starlet.

Route revealed for Kerry’s biggest cycle race | By Sean Moriarty

Mossie Costello with his father Jason at the Rally Town exhibition in Tralee on the eve of the Circuit of Kerry last weekend. Mossie will become Kerry’s youngest rally driver on Saturday. Pic: Ray Corkery.

Kerry’s youngest rally driver Kerry’s youngest rally competitor is set to make his driving debut on Saturday’s Moonraker Rally in Ballyvourney. Mossie Costello from Tarbert is only 15 but new rules brought in last year mean that under 17s can drive in forestry events provided a responsible adult drives the car on the road section and acts as the co-driver. Mossie has been competing in autocross events for the last two seasons in a self-prepared Nissan Micra. His father Jason and grandfather Joe were accomplished rally drivers and were

on hand to help Mossie build his rally Micra in time for Saturday’s event. They are the first third-generation family to be Kerry Motor Club members and rally drivers. “I have done a few autocross events but I’m not sure what it’ll be like having someone talking to me through the helmet,” said Mossie, who was in Tralee on Saturday as part of the Rally Town exhibition on the eve of the Rose Hotel Circuit of Kerry. Other Kerry competitors on the Moonraker include David Fleming/Kieran Doherty (Honda Civic) and Seán Fleming/ Niall McLarnon (Ford Fiesta RWD).

The biggest competitive cycling event in Kerry, and possibly Ireland now that this year’s RÁS won’t run, will take place over the Easter weekend. The Kerry Group Rás Mumhan is the first major stage event of the Irish Cycle Racing year and will run over four days beginning on Good Friday. Organised by Killorglin Cycling Club, the 500km route will cover much of the county. Good Friday’s opening stage will run through Killarney, Kilcummin, Scartaglen, Castleisland, Currans, Ballyfinnane, Firies, Castlemaine and Milltown. There is a sharp category two climb near Scartaglen at the halfway point which will cause problems to the peloton and the new section of road between Milltown and Killorglin on the sweep in to the finish will allow for fast racing at the end of the day. Saturday’s stage starts in Listowel at

10am and will visit Ballylongford and Tarbert before sweeping into County Limerick. The stage will finish in Athea after three laps of a 40km circuit that takes in Carrigkerry, Ballyhahill and Glin. The first riders are due in Athea around 2pm. The traditional Easter Sunday run takes the riders on circuit that starts and finishes in Waterville and takes in Ballinskelligs, Valentia, Cahersiveen, Portmagee, Coom an Easpaigh and The Glen. Sunday’s stage gets underway at 11.30am and is due to finish in Waterville at around 3.30pm. There is a real sting in the tail to the final stage between Killorglin and Beaufort. The initial 25km circuit (which is covered three times) is on flat and fast roads. The stage will end with ten laps of the Kilorglin street circuit - each one 4kms in length, adding 40ks to the stage. In an new departure, any rider who is more than 3m 30s down on the leaders at the end of each lap will be removed, forcing up the race tempo and adding to the atmosphere in Killorglin.

Lakers bid farewell to “hugely popular” PG Seán O’Brien Scotts Lakers officials have paid tribute to outgoing American star Seán O’Brien who has departed the club with immediate effect. O’Brien joined the club as a last minute signing just before the 2018/19 season began and the Philadelphia native spearheaded the team’s playoff charge, frequently putting up match-winning numbers with his excellent shooting and selfless, pin-point passing. The Lakers impressed en route to the last four of the Division 1 playoffs and along with club captain Mark Greene, O’Brien was undoubtedly the star of the campaign. Speaking to the Killarney Advertiser, Scotts Lakers Team Manager John Brosnan said O’Brien had been “brilliant for the club, both on and off the court”. “Seán has done great work with our youth teams as well as coaching basketball with the Kerry Stars Special Olympics team,” Brosnan said. “On the court he had a great season as well. He’s a team player - it was never about points with Seán. It was always Fantasy Premier League

BRIAN JAMES

‘team first’. He brought great intensity night after night to practice and continued this into every game. His ball-handling skills were superb and he proved to be one of the best players in the league. “He brought the best out of every player he played with. “He proved to be a hugely popular figure with the locals around the town. He is simply 100% quality. “We would like to thank him for everything he did for the club both on and off the court and for the hugely positive impact he had. We wish him the very best for the future.” From a journalist’s point of view, I couldn’t speak highly enough of O’Brien and the professionalism he showed throughout his year in Killarney. He was very forthcoming and he always spoke positively about his teammates and about the town in general. We wish him all the best at his next club.

WHAT’S IN A CREST? Dr Crokes’ current crest was designed in 1986 - the club’s centenary year - by Niall O’Sullivan of O’Sullivan’s Place. The emblem naturally displays the club’s distinctive black and amber colours, which over the years have become synonymous with the Crokes. Symbols of hurling and football can be seen on the shield and below the hurls is a white mitre, the headgear typically worn by bishops in traditional Christianity. The

#2 - DR CROKES

mitre represents Dr Croke, Archbishop of Cashel and the GAA, who gave his name to the club as well as permission to be their first ever patron. The leaping deer on either side represent the town of Killarney. The club’s name is displayed in traditional Gaelic font on a banner at the foot of the crest. On the current senior team jerseys, the Irish for Killarney, ‘Cill Áirne’, has also been added.

They played 7 short games against teams from Fethard, Nenagh, Roscrea, Mallow, Greystones, Virginia and Bruff. The Killarney girls improved as the games progressed, winning 6 of their 7 games, finishing in a nail-biting contest against Virginia. The Killarney girls were victorious by 1 try. The girls agreed it was their best tournament of the season. The girls were presented with their medals by former Ireland Rugby Captain and TV pundit Fiona Steed. Very well done to all the girls and the coaches as well as the supporters. KERRY GIRLS: The Kerry Girls U14 training session went really well on Saturday at Aghadoe. In a fantastic session of over 2 hours, the girls were put through their paces by Hollie and the mums had tea and coffee while they were waiting. 12.04.2019 and knocked seconds off her PBs in all events. Paudie O’Leary was on absolute fire on Sunday and, on just his second time swimming long-course, broke the one-minute barrier in the 100 freestyle. This is a first for the club and a huge achievement from one of our talented, up-and-coming young swimmers.
