12.01.18 Eve Kelliher takes a look at the news that’s been getting Killarney and Kerry talking
‘I Didn’t Know There Were Such Kind People Out There’ THE big-hearted gesture of Killarney woman Joan Moriarty has been a real talking point this week. Thanks to Joan, the owners of runaway pooch Alfie were reunited on Wednesday with their much-loved pet – pictured on right with Joan, who went to heroic efforts to locate him. The Jack Russell was on a visit to Killarney with Ballincollig-based Clarissa Shinnick and her husband Donal O’Mahony and their two young daughters, when he went missing in Killarney National Park. Donal took Alfie for a walk in Muckross on Monday morning. “At 10.49am while walking from Muckross House to Dinis Cottage, a cyclist came up behind Alfie and this must have spooked him,” said Clarissa. “He ran ahead out of sight but never returned and he always would.” When Joan heard the story, she contacted Clarissa via social media and, armed
with dog treats, promptly went out searching for the missing pet on Wednesday morning – eventually locating him close to Bricín Bridge. “He was stuck in a place he simply couldn’t get out of,” Joan told Killarney Advertiser. “I have two dogs myself so I went out specifically to see if I could find him and I was just lucky to be in the right place at the right time. I heard a noise and followed it up – he took a bit of getting to but it was worth every bit of it; I wouldn’t be able to sleep if either of my dogs were missing!” A delighted Clarissa added: “The relief of having Alfie back is incredible. He’s happy out and healthy. I didn’t know there were such kind people out there. I’m so grateful to Joan, and to everyone who shared our story on social media. He is the life and soul of our house. He is our best friend. The power of social media is unbelievable.” Well done, Joan.
Fallen Tree
Mairead Is A Great Golf Ambassador WHEN he received a new set of golf clubs from Santa Claus, Brian McCarthy was eager to try them out. And luckily for the nine-yearold golf enthusiast, when he arrived at Killarney Golf Club last Saturday with his dad Derry, club captain, he met none other than the club’s girls captain and Irish International Mairead Martin. End Of An Era In Demesne A TWO-CENTURIES-OLD horse chestnut tree said farewell to its home in Knockreer in the early hours of last Friday morning and as it fell it spelled the end of an era for many. The tree would have been planted during the tenure of the Earls of Kenmare and was one of many to take pride of place in Knockreer Estate. Meanwhile, following its fall, have been calls for checks on trees in the National Park for safety reasons. “We are so fortunate to have the wonderful National Park so close to Killarney town,
It affords us the opportunity to walk or cycle away from street traffic and urban din,” said Councillor Michael Gleeson. “It is however vitally important that the trees that grow tall by the side of the pathways are regularly examined by experts in order to ensure their well-being. The recent collapse of a very large tree by the side of a walkway in the Demesne could have had serious consequences. Fortunately nobody was in the vicinity at the time the tree uprooted and crashed to ground.”
was practising her game and to Derry and Brian’s delight, played 10 holes with the pair and passed on some valuable tips to Brian. “Mairead is a fantastic ambassador for Killarney Golf and Fishing Club and for the game of golf itself,” said club PRO Victor Mulcahy. After their game, Mairead presented Brian with some golf accessories.

Focus on Brexit in Killarney
THEY say “what goes on tour stays on tour”, but try telling that to this week’s Chatroom guests. We were delighted to welcome homegrown heroes Niall Dennehy and Pat Sheehan to The Chatroom. The Glenflesk pals reached the summit of Africa’s highest mountain, Kilimanjaro, on New Year’s Eve in inspirational fashion, in the process raising funds for the Irish
Kidney Association. They tell Killarney Advertiser Editor Eve Kelliher about the experience and share some timely insights into setting – and keeping – New Year goals. The pair weren’t slow about revealing a few insider secrets – including the best way to silence a snoring tent mate. We also hear all about Niall’s weightloss journey which saw him
shed an impressive 10 stone over the past year. Pat of course had plenty of tips: He runs Pat Sheehan Health and Fitness wellness centre at Club Vitae Leisure Centre, Hotel Killarney, and another weightloss centre in The Loft Fitness Studio in Millstreet. A must-see, check out this week’s Chatroom video at 9pm this evening on our Facebook page and on our website killarneyadvertiser.ie
WITH Brexit high among the global issues set to dominate the year ahead, the business community will be keen to keep up with rapid developments. Today and tomorrow, the Killarney Economic Conference will scrutinise the process and explain developments. Key among a list of expert speakers is Arlene Foster, leader of the Democratic Unionist Party (DUP), who has insisted Northern Ireland will not be separated “constitutionally, politically, economically or regulatory” from the UK. Michael Russell, Scottish minister for UK negotiations on Scotland’s place in Europe, and Mark Drakeford, the Welsh cabinet secretary for finance, will address other UK political views. The line-up for the event, at The Brehon Hotel, also includes Fianna Fáil leader Micheál Martin; Catherine Barnard, professor of EU law at Cambridge University; and former chief press officer at No 10 Downing Street Matthew O’Toole. The panel chair is Mark Hennessy, Irish Times news editor and former London editor.

Town Talk Stolen Property Returned To Musician Liam

INTERNATIONALLY renowned Killarney musician Liam O’Connor was yesterday reunited with thousands of euro worth of property stolen from his home. Following the burglary on Wednesday, January 3, gardaí conducted an investigation which led to the recovery of laptops, cash, jewellery, watches and electronic items including a games console. The robbery occurred between 8pm and 9pm on January 3 when the house was unoccupied. “All of the property was recovered in the Muckross Road area,” Superintendent Flor Murphy told Killarney Advertiser. “Two people have since appeared before a special court in Killarney on Sunday in relation to the matter.” Liam, a gifted accordionist, thanked Killarney Gardaí, including Supt Murphy, Sergeant Dermot O’Connell, Garda Finbarr Donovan and all the detectives
involved in the investigation. “They were outstanding,” he said as he retrieved his property from Killarney Garda Station last night. An accordion player who holds the Guinness World Record for the fastest fingers in the world, Liam formerly starred with Lord of the Dance Michael Flatley. A master of over 20 instruments, Liam has over the years performed across the globe in his own right, including at Croke Park. “My biggest worry were my instruments and I am so glad these weren’t touched in the robbery,” he said. Other houses in the vicinity were targeted on New Year’s Eve and in one nearby house an attempted burglary was interrupted by vigilant neighbours. Separately, Gardaí are continuing investigations into a spate of burglaries that occurred in recent days in the Scrahan, Pinewood, Park Road and Woodlawn Road areas.

Time Travel Yields Rewards WELL, when a group of Killarney revellers headed back through the decades, it proved a profitable experience for one deserving charity. A special 1990s-themed night that took place in McSorley’s in November in memory of Patrick McSparron raised an impressive €5000 for CF Ireland which Patrick’s pals presented to the cause on Wednesday. “The idea came around because of the 20-year anniversary of Patrick’s death from cystic fibrosis,” said James Murphy on behalf of the organisers.

Cahernane House Hotel In Final Phase Of €6.5m Revamp THE Cahernane House Hotel is about to enter the final phase of a major €6.5 million redevelopment by the Prem Group. The hotel has undergone extensive renovations since it was purchased by Prem in 2016. The company said the work has been carried out with “a sympathetic eye” on keeping many of the original styles of the house. The latest part of the project, at an estimated cost of €3 million, will result in a major refurbishment of all 26 rooms in the Garden Wing, while the Cellar Bar and lobby will also receive
complete makeovers. The initial phases of work involved putting on a new roof, as well as replacing all mechanical and electrical installations. A planning application has also been lodged with Kerry County Council to build an additional 22 bedrooms and more public spaces, including an orangery. Separately, Prem, which operates more than 45 properties throughout Ireland, Belgium, the Netherlands, France and Britain, is undertaking a €3 million renovation project at the Osprey Hotel in Naas, Co Kildare.

Mountain Rescue
Woman Airlifted From Mangerton LAST Sunday saw the Kerry Mountain Rescue Team help pluck a woman to safety after she became injured while climbing Mangerton. The walker, an Irish woman in her 30s, slipped on ice while ascending the slope, sustaining a lower leg injury. “The lady was in a party of four climb-
ers. They attempted to assist her down the mountain but decided it better to call for assistance,” said Kerry Mountain Rescue Team PRO Alan Wallace. Weather conditions were very cold but clear at the time. The Rescue 115 helicopter airlifted the climber to hospital at 1.15pm.
Volunteer Rescue Service Urges Climbers To Be Prepared THE volunteers that make up Kerry Mountain Rescue Team have reminded hillwalkers and mountain climbers to ensure they have the required skills to do so or to embark on the expedition with someone who does. The warning comes from the PRO of the group, Alan Wallace, after it
spearheaded four rescues from Carrantuohill between December 26 and 29, and another on Mangerton on Sunday. Even experienced climbers face difficulty on Carrantuohill, Ireland’s highest peak, in the current weather, he said. Should there be a minimum financial charge from those rescued?

Orchestra Tunes Up In Killarney THE Irish Symphonic Wind Orchestra is returning to Killarney this weekend for its annual workshop, which takes place from today, January 12, until January 14. The musicians will also perform for a recital at 2.30pm on Sunday, January 14, in the Mangerton Suite of The Gleneagle Hotel. The Irish Symphonic Wind Orchestra features, by invite only, 90 of the top wind, brass and percussionists from across Ireland. Killarney native Barbara Fleming is one of its founders and started her music career with Killarney’s own Gleneagle Concert Band.
Barbara said: “It is a pleasure for me to bring the Irish Symphonic Wind Orchestra back to my hometown of Killarney this year to where my own music career began.” The orchestra, which was formed less than four years ago, has already performed in Athlone, Limerick, Cork, Dublin and Waterford as well as Killarney. In July 2017, ISWO was one of only 10 orchestras worldwide to be invited to perform at the 2017 World Association of Symphonic Bands and Ensembles Conference, in Holland – a rare honour for an orchestra only in its fourth year. Free entry, donations if desired on the door; see www.iswo.band.

The group said the woods have since “reverted to uncleared status”, representing a breach of Article 6(2) of the EU Habitats Directive. In a statement, Groundwork said: “Rhododendron ponticum poses a significant threat to native Irish woodlands by preventing regeneration and displacing native flora.” The DCHG noted that the department has for many years pursued a strong multi-faceted approach to the control of rhododendron in Killarney National Park with considerable success. Its approach, it said, is “based upon sound science” and is subject to monitoring”. The department spent nearly €300,000, a significant portion of its national budget, on the eradication of rhododendron in the park in 2017.

People Power Wins The Day motorists, especially vehicles leaving the town of Killarney driving towards Ballydowney and Fossa,” said Cllr Sheahan. A stroll there with clients and staff of the Kerry Parents & Friends Association centre at Port Road confirmed that crossing there could be a frightening experience, particularly for wheelchair users. “We use this crossing on a daily basis and see people parking right on top of it or too close to it which means it’s extremely difficult to cross,” said deputy manager of Kerry Parents & Friends Association Catherine Moriarty, indicating a car obstructing the view at the crossing as she spoke. “It’s also very difficult as even when the lights are green for pedestrians some cars keep driving, many faster than they should.” • Have you experienced similar problems at pedestrian crossings in your locality? JUST over three years ago Killarney Advertiser highlighted the plight of Port Road residents who feared their lives were endangered on a daily basis at its pedestrian crossing. Now we are delighted to welcome news that works improving safety there are to be carried out, as part of a €1 million project. Regular road users pointed out how vehicles parking on or too close to the crossing and traffic failing to slow down have been factors in a number of “near-misses” at the crossing. “Now, at last, there are plans to widen the footpath to stop cars parking too near the traffic lights,” Mayor of Kerry and Killarney-based county councillor John Sheahan told Killarney Advertiser. Cllr Sheahan, who has highlighted the matter at council level many times in recent years, said plans are also in place to move the lights closer to the junction. “Cars parking illegally, much too close to the crossing, is affecting the view of passing
PSYCHIATRIC nurses working at Deer Lodge mental health facility have withdrawn their threat to picket. There had been plans to protest over concerns about the levels of radon gas in the €13.5m building. The Kerry branch of the Psychiatric Nurses Association had warned members would stage lunchtime protests unless details of the most recent radon measurements were made available. The HSE assured the PNA that the levels of radon at Deer Lodge “do not pose any immediate threat” to the health of residents and staff.

The DCHG disagrees with Groundwork’s claims, with a spokesperson saying the department was “not aware” Groundwork was going to lodge a complaint. “Groundwork has complained to the EU in respect of rhododendron in the past. However, upon consideration of the steps that the department has put in place, the EU Commission decided not to pursue these complaints,” the spokesperson said. Groundwork ran initiatives that removed rhododendron from Killarney National Park from 1981 to 2009, with the support of the Irish Wildlife Trust and the NPWS. During that time, Groundwork said it cleared approximately 40% of the oak woods of rhododendron with “scien-

A TALENTED trio of Killarney students believe official figures of deer-related accidents are hugely underestimated. The students, from St Brendan’s College, have combined official statistics on incidents in which deer collide with cars with their own survey, using a crowdsourcing app, to present what they believe to be a more accurate picture. Their research found that there were more than 101 incidents in the Killarney area in the past five years, with an average of more than 300 collisions a year in Ireland. Most went undocumented unless there was significant personal damage or injury, said Darragh Fleming, Colm Looney and Ethan O’Neill. The students identified two areas where deer were most frequently to be found in their area: Gortroe in Fossa and Lough Guitane.
Muckross. Motion sensors and cameras were deployed to detect the animals. The team went on to prove the effectiveness of “cheap deterrents” used in Scotland and the US in the form of CDs hung from trees and human hair (sourced from a local barber and packed into tights). The CD shines when illuminated by car lights while the scent from the hair puts the deer off. In a third phase of their project, they developed a prototype sign that lights up with different colours depending on how recently deer have been in the area; red indicating to a motorist when they are most likely to face an encounter. “We believe that all three measures together will reduce collisions,” they added. They are submitting their work to the Road Safety Authority, the local Gardai, and Kerry County Council.

St Brendan’s College students Harry Knoblauch, James Knoblauch and Oran O’Donoghue.
THEY’RE the Steve Jobs of the future and some 31 students from schools across Kerry were delighted to display the fruits of their labours over the past few days. Among 1,100 students who descended on the RDS for the BT Young Scientist & Technology Exhibition were pupils from St Brigid’s Presentation Secondary School Eimear Beasley, Caoimhe O’Connor and Kate Lynch-O’Doherty who displayed their study on the life-changing effects of the technological world. They were guided in the project by their teacher Emma Cronin. Meanwhile, another trio of St Brendan’s College students, Oran O’Donoghue and Harry and James Knoblauch, presented
their study conformity and how it is influenced by minorities. In a rousing speech, President Michael D. Higgins opened the BT Young Scientist & Technology Exhibition 2018. Speaking to the students, he emphasised the role of young and aspiring scientists to tackle continuing issues affecting the world, particularly Africa, such as climate change and food-shortages. Further inspirational messages were shared with the assembled audience from leaders across the Science, Technology, Engineering and Maths (STEM) fields, as well as from An Taoiseach, Leo Varadkar, who gave advice on doing well in school and what STEM could do for Ireland in the future.

A PECI Need For More Infrastructure And Investment For Kerry S S NEW

Why Are We Still Waiting? Eve Kelliher turns the spotlight on how lack of progress on the main Kerry-Cork Road is isolating our county LACK of progress on the main Kerry-Cork road is isolating Kerry in terms of employment, tourism, transportation and healthcare. The contract for the N22 road development scheme went out to public tender last year and not before time, as this will be a major and welcome step in the development of the much-needed Macroom Bypass. But why are we still waiting for improvements to the most basic of infrastructure? The route is used by commuters, haulage transporters, tourists, ambulances, cyclists and the Kerry-Cork Health Link Bus ferrying Kerry cancer patients for daily treatment. Locally, hoteliers have often noted that the single biggest complaint by tourists was the state of the road in to Kerry. Employers group IBEC has said that increased investment is needed in regional infrastructure to prevent a further growth in the imbalance be-
tween Dublin and the regions. Two years ago, Kerry attempted to seek “island status” on the grounds of neglect of basic infrastructure by the Government and the National Roads Authority (NRA) because of the condition of the county’s roads. Cllr Michael Gleeson of South Kerry Independent Alliance first raised the idea of seeking island status for the Kingdom. Kerry was already an island because of “neglect and indifference” by the NRA, he said. Mr Gleeson said: “When I called for island status for Kerry, people thought I was being facetious. I was not. When I proposed going to Europe to seek special status for this county, I was not exaggerating.” I remember sitting in traffic in Macroom in the early 1990s, little imagining that pretty much nothing would have changed more than a quarter of a century on! • Let us know what you think at newsdesk@killarneyadvertiser.ie

THERE will be plenty to celebrate at Killarney Golf Club when it marks its 125th anniversary this year (1893-2018). Members officially launched the commemorative year at the clubhouse where they unveiled a whole series of events. Club captain Derry McCarthy, lady captain Sheila Crowley and president Jack Buckley outlined the club’s plans for the milestone. “The club has a very proud history and is recognised nationally and internationally for offering one of the finest golfing experiences in the world,” said Sheila. Killarney Golf Club has hosted a number of high-profile golf events over the years, including the Irish Open on four occasions, two Irish Ladies Opens, a Curtis Cup, along with several National and international amateur events. The club has an impressive record in producing
Lotto
Birthday Numbers Lead To Legion Lotto Wins
THE Killarney Legion lotto hit a record high of €19,000 on January 2 and it was shared between James Cronin and Patsy Dineen. As it happened, both winners had chosen the lucky numbers of 2, 3, 10 and 12 based on their children’s birthdays. “Both were fitting winners as James is a very active seller of the lotto in the Speakeasy Bar and Patsy is originally MacNeice from Fairhill, a family steeped in the club,” said Enda Walshe, Killarney Legion chairman. “Our lotto is a vital backbone for the running of the club and our recent run will aid greatly
in the progress and funding of our club.” As a mark of appreciation for all those who played the lotto the club started its new jackpot at the enhanced figure of €5000 for the draw that took place on Sunday. The numbers drawn were 8, 10, 25 ad 28 and there was no winner. The five €50 prize winners were Tom Lucey, Muckross Road, Pa Murhill, Muckross; Sean Walsh, Loreto Road; Sam Hegarty; and Deege O’Sullivan c/o Holiday Inn. The week’s draw, for a jackpot of €5,300, will take place on Sunday, January 14, in Murphy’s Bar at 9pm.
THE past couple of weeks have been busy ones for Killarney accessibility campaigner Paudie Healy. Paudie, the CEO of Universal Access, was an invited speaker in Paris at an ENAT/Paris hosted event, addressing eleven national tourism organisations from different European countries on accessible tourism. The week after, Paudie took centre stage in Madrid as a speaker at an event hosted by the Spanish government

on the city’s launch to become the leading accessible city in Europe for business and leisure tourism under the slogan All Madrid4All. “The two events were very significant and outlined the enormous development being done by both the public and private tourism service providers sector now Internationally on developing their destinations accessible for-all in business and leisure tourism,” said Paudie.

top-level international golfers with no fewer than 16 players representing their country at all levels of international golf, and a number have represented Great Britain & Ireland at various levels of international golf. “The ladies and gents clubs have also enjoyed tremendous success at county/provincial and national levels over the years and Killarney are very proud to be home of the current All Ireland Ladies Senior Cup & All Ireland Senior Foursomes Champions – the first time in the history of the ILGU that this feat was achieved!” added Derry. Significant improvements have been made within the club over the past number of years, and with plans for further investments and course projects in the pipeline. “There are no limits to where this club should aspire to go in the next 125 years,” said Jack.

Fate can be so fickle, it’s determined by the gods, Like numbers in the Lotto, or a roulette wheel’s spinning ball. It can be that last elusive ace, when you are holding three, Or a referee’s decision, with a dubious penalty. It can be that girl across a room, who will become your wife, Or a doctor who saw something, that in time would save your life. Great things in life are achieved, when fate is on your side, And conversely you are doomed, if the stars are not aligned. I often played in matches, that I felt we should have won, But a freak bounce of the ball, saw my dreams undone. Last night I saw a programme, about the great Mick O’Dwyer, He managed Kerry, and for years, had them on fire. He won eight All-Irelands, and then in 1982, Five in-a-row beckoned; could they see it through? They could if fate favoured them, but it was not to be, For the gods smiled kindly down, on a sub from Offaly. He came late into the game, as busy as a bee, When Kerry were two points ahead, on the verge of history. Darby nudged poor Tommy Doyle, and scored a winning goal, Fate had deserted Kerry, and that’s the way fate goes!

Project
Contracts Signed For Social Inclusion Programme SOCIAL inclusion projects took centre stage this week after a new programme came into effect from January 2018. The Social Inclusion and Community Activation Programme 2018-2022 (SICAP) follows the previous SICAP 2015-2017 Programme, which saw an overall investment of €4.8 million in social inclusion projects throughout Kerry between 2015 and 2017. Among the many projects which have benefited from SICAP include the “Steps to Success Programme”, the Kerry Social Farming Project, the Men’s Sheds and Revamp projects. The programme continues to focus on reducing poverty and promoting social inclusion and equality through supporting communities and individuals using community development approaches, engagement and collaboration.
SICAP 2018 is based on the current programme with a number of key changes. The redesigned programme reflects Ireland’s changing social and economic landscape, including the context of reduced unemployment and a general economic recovery. The new programme design has been informed by the results of a national consultation process which took place in the first half of 2017. The tender process for the appointment of programme implementers has been completed and the award of the contracts was approved by Kerry’s LCDC in November 2017. The funding agreement with the successful Programme Implementers, namely North East and West Kerry Development, South Kerry Development Partnership and IRD Duhallow, was signed recently at County Buildings.

BREXIT remains a major concern for the hotel sector in Kerry and across the country, according to the latest quarterly barometer from the Irish Hotels Federation (IHF). With UK visitor numbers down by 6% year on year, according to the latest CSO figures, three in five (59%) hotel and guesthouse owners nationally say the weakened Sterling has had a negative effect on their business during 2017. Growth in overseas visitor numbers from other markets – especially US, France and Germany – as well as a strong performance in the domestic market have helped to compensate for the fall in UK visitors for now. Tourism currently supports
11,900 jobs in Kerry and contributes some €508m to the local economy annually. Patrick O’Donoghue, Chair of the IHF’s Kerry branch, said that while visitor numbers may still be up, the tourism and hospitality sector cannot afford to be complacent about the future. “The continued fall-out from Brexit and the slowdown in visitor growth are worrying as they have a significant regional bias. For too long we have had a two-tier tourism sector where businesses in the major cities and tourism hotspots benefit more than the regions.” He added: “We must diversify into new markets and we welcome the work being done in that regard. However, it cannot be at
Munster Champions 2018
the expense of our existing markets, particularly the UK, which has the broadest regional and seasonal spread of visitors. Time and again tourism has shown itself to be an excellent investment for every euro spent in destination marketing. Our survey shows that hoteliers are planning to increase their own marketing spend next year too but more targeted investment is needed particularly in regional marketing support and in the development of new and engaging products,” Mr O’Donoghue said. He added: “Hoteliers in Kerry and across the country are investing in their properties and in staff recruitment and development to ensure that we continue to be an attractive, value for money destination for all visitors and especially visitors from the UK.” Kerry IHF chair Patrick O’Donoghue.
THE Spa Rince Seit team retained their Munster title in Ovens, Cork, last weekend. The standard was very high and all Kerry clubs performed magnificently. Spa’s figure dancers lost out to the reigning champs from Tipperary. Na Gaeil also took top accolades with the Novelty act. Spa’s Tráth na gCeist team lost by one point to Dr Crokes who will represent Kerry in the All Ireland. All three clubs will compete with the best of Ireland in Sligo on Saturday, February 17.

RESIDENTIAL TENANCIES The Law of Governing Residential Private Lettings has become complicated in recent years and great care should be taken by any potential Landlord in preparing a property for letting and in respect of the preparation and completion of a lease and the registration of same with the relevant authorities. The minimum standards for rental accommodation are set out in Housing (Standards for Rented Houses) Regulations 2008 and the Housing (Standards for Rented Houses Amendment) Regulations 2009. The Local Authorities are responsible for inspection of rented accommodation and for the enforcement of standards. A Landlord should ensure that these minimum standards are in place prior to advertising a property for letting or prior to agreement of a lease. Once the property has been advertised for letting, strict rules govern the choosing of a Tenant by the Landlord. Once a Tenant has been chosen and terms and conditions have been agreed, it is always advisable that a written Letting Agreement be put in place which will set out the terms and conditions that have been agreed between the Landlord and the Tenant which would include the rent deposit and duration of the Lease. A Landlord is required to regis-
ter the letting with the Residential Tenancies Board and a registration form and appropriate fee should be discharged as soon as possible after the completion of the written Letting Agreement. Strict provisions are in place in respect of the termination of any Letting Agreement. Notice periods are governed by the length of time a Tenant has been in occupation of the premises. A Tenancy may be terminated for other reasons including rent arrears, anti-social behaviour etc. These are governed by the Residential Tenancies Act, 2004. Provision for resolution of disputes between Landlord and Tenant is set out in the Residential Tenancies Act, 2004 and the Residential Tenancies Board is empowered to deal with such disputes. It is advisable that legal advices is obtained by the Landlord and Tenant prior to entering into a new agreement. The above is a discussion piece only and does not purport to be legal advice and should not be relied upon as such. In respect of any specific circumstances, you should consult your solicitor to obtain specific legal advice and Terence F. Tips On Filling Up The CAO Form Ahead Of Early Deadline AS MANY students are busy preparing for their mocks at the moment, worrying about the CAO is bound to bring extra stress. But students are urged not to worry unnecessarily. Applicants who have registered ahead of the early bird deadline of the 20th of January at 5.15pm will have received their CAO number and they can add/change courses up to January 31st. For those who have not yet registered, you can do so on www.cao.ie and the discounted application fee of €30 applies up to the early deadline of Jan 20th. There is a fee of €45 thereafter for those who register after Jan 20th and before the normal closing date of February 1s. For students who are completely undecided at this stage don’t worry. You can revisit your choices when the Change of Mind Facility opens on May 4 until July 1 at 5.15pm. In the meantime, the following
steps will help: • Think about the type of person you are, your interests, qualities, strengths, subjects or tasks that you enjoy. • Talk to those who know you well such as parents, teachers, your guidance counsellor and to those who have studied the courses you are interested in. • Research the detail of the courses by checking out all the modules you will study over the duration of the course, what specialisms are available and whether work placement is included. This detail can be found on the college websites. • Check the entry requirements for the course, which must be met if you are to be considered eligible • Put your choices in genuine order of preference. This is the golden rule of filling the CAO form. Points are based on supply and demand therefore they rise and fall every year and students

A Weekly Round-Up Of News + Views From Kerry And Around Politics
Kerry Fianna Fáil Members To Battle It Out At Selection Convention FIANNA FÁIL is still undecided on how many candidates it will run in Kerry but several party members are to vie for a place on the party ticket for the next general election. Sitting TD John Brassil was elected to the Dáil 2016. As Killarney Advertiser confirmed last week, Senator Mark Daly, Kenmare, is to throw his hat in the ring, while the Mayor of Killarney Municipal District, Councillor Niall Kelleher, is also considering putting his name forward – but stressed that it is not his intention to challenge Deputy Brassil if Fianna Fáil decides to select only one candidate. Former TD, Councillor Tom McEllistrim, who lost his seat in 2011, is seeking a return to Leinster House. Rossbeigh-based councillor Michael Cahill, who left Fianna Fáil in 2011 but returned last year, is also seeking a nomination, as is former
mayor of Kerry Michal O’Shea, Milltown, and the Mayor of Tralee, Norma Foley, while Waterville councillor Norma Moriarty is also seeking a place on the ticket for the second time. The close of nominations is today, Friday, but no date has been decided as yet for the selection convention, which is believed will be held in coming weeks. The Killarney Cumann of the party met last night to discuss party strategy for the next general election. Cllr Michael O’Shea says Fianna Fáil should take geography and population centres into account. He claims Fianna Fáil must include a southern representative for the county, but the party must remember the vacuum left in the Killarney area two years ago.
Trump Corner ‘Fire And Fury’ In High Demand IRISH booksellers are reporting big demand for the muchhyped book about Donald Trump. Penned by Michael Wolff, “Fire and Fury” arrived in Ireland on Wednesday and Eason said demand for the book is “keeping the publisher on its toes”. Book Manager for Eason Martin Edwards said: “There’s been the Harry Potters and books like that, but it’s very rare for a current affairs or non-fiction book to be this massive, especially in January.” Another bookseller, Hodges

The Cromane native joins Saoirse Ronan and Martin McDonagh, with the latter discovering they were in the running for the coveted awards less than 48 hours after their Golden Globes success. Fodhla, the producer of Lady Macbeth, received nominations in the Outstanding British Film and Outstanding Debut categories. Saoirse Ronan is nominated for her role in coming-of-age film Lady
Bird, alongside Frances McDormand, Annette Benning, Margot Robbie and Sally Hawkins. Phantom Thread star Daniel Day-Lewis, who holds Irish citizenship, is up against Jamie Bell, Daniel Kaluuya, Timothee Chalamet and Gary Oldman in the Best Actor category. British-Irish filmmaker Martin McDonagh, meanwhile, has enjoyed several nominations for his film Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri - including Best Film, Best Director and Best Original Screenplay. Three Injured In Trump Tower Fire FIREFIGHTERS responded to a fire on the roof of Trump Tower in New York on Monday. Three people were injured in a small electrical fire at Trump Tower, where smoke billowed from the rooftop early Monday as emergency crews worked to extinguish the flames, reports The Washington Post. The Se-
cret Service first spotted the fire and alerted building managers, who called 911 shortly before sunrise, according to New York fire officials. Within about an hour, fire crews had extinguished what an FDNY spokesman called a “quick, easy and routine” blaze on the roof of the luxury building on Fifth Avenue in Manhattan.
MEP Seán Kelly Has Support For Presidential Tilt IRELAND SOUTH FINE GAEL MEP Seán Kelly is considering running for president and says he has the support of politicians and sporting communities. Speaking to the Irish Examiner, the former GAA president said he would be honoured if chosen to run. “A lot of people have asked me about it. I will think about it. A couple of people in the parliamentary party have said ‘are you considering it, you should throw your hat in the ring if it comes up’.” The two-time MEP says he, and likely the Fine Gael party, will hold off making a decision until President Michael D Higgins announces whether he will seek a second term. “I see nothing at all wrong with the present incumbent. If he wants to consider running again, he should be allowed to do so. “A lot of people have asked me about it. I will think about it. Fine Gael members at meetings have said it to me, people involved in
sport have too. Even students at a school in Tipperary asked me.” The Fine Gael leadership had not discussed it with him yet, said the MEP. Mr Kelly won 83,000 first preference votes in the last European elections. He was also elected in 2009. The former teacher played a key role as GAA president in opening up Croke Park to soccer and rugby. The married father-of-four said his focus for now was on getting re-elected to the European Parliament. Mr Kelly featured on a Fine Gael shortlist for the 2012 presidential election, but ultimately MEP Gay Mitchell went forward. “I would have to take it very seriously if people [in the party] asked me to run. If Áras an Uachtaráin was in Kerry, it would be more of an attraction and maybe easier. I think I could bring a lot to it, especially with my experience as president of the GAA, and having worked with young people and sport.”

Michael Healy-Rae Turns Spotlight On Suicide
‘Micko’ Goes Down A Treat With RTÉ Viewers GAA STARS and fans alike were delighted with the portrait of sporting legend Mick O’Dwyer who was the subject of a moving RTÉ documentary this week. “Micko” painted the portrait of a Gaelic football star – as player and manager – who is still totally obsessed with the game. O’Dwyer’s four All-Ireland wins as a player were the focus of the first part of the film. There was brilliant footage of the 81-year-old from his heyday as a corner-forward for the Kingdom. “Micko” is known better by younger generations as a fantastic manager who led various counties to success.
He won an incredible eight All-Irelands as Kerry boss in the 70s and 80s. He led Kildare to two Leinster titles, coming back to haunt his old rival Dublin again in the 2000 provincial decider. In 2003, he managed Laois to provincial success against the Lilywhites. Eoin “Bomber” Liston – a star player in Kerry teams O’Dwyer managed – was hilariously described by him as ‘soft and pudgy’. He tweeted his reaction, saying: “After all the years I’m still soft and pudgy. Great man and great documentary #oncesoftandpudgyalways”
Police Recover Some Jewels Stolen In Ritz Heist
POLICE in Paris have recovered some jewels stolen from the Ritz Hotel in a multimillion-euro robbery but are still searching for two thieves and the rest of the missing luxury merchandise. The dramatic heist on Wednesday evening raised questions about security in one of the world’s most prestigious areas, the Place Vendome, whose well-guarded buildings include the Justice Ministry, high-end boutiques and the 19th century Ritz. The overall value of the
jewels on display was about €4.5 million and authorities were working on Thursday with the jewellers to determine how many items are still missing and their value, the official said. Workers cleaned up shattered glass on Thursday morning and started to repair damage from the robbery. Three suspects entered the hotel through an unmarked side door, smashed display cases and threw bags of goods out of a window to at least two accomplices outside, according to a police official.
Tommy Tiernan and Deputy Michael Healy-Rae on The Tommy Tiernan Show.
KERRY TD Michael Healy-Rae has been praised by television viewers for his “kindness” and “decency” after he told a heart-breaking story about a constituent who died by suicide following financial difficulties. Deputy Healy-Rae was a guest on The Tommy Tiernan Show on Wednesday in which the comedian interviews surprise guests. And viewers took to social media to highlight how impressed they were by the Independent TD’s forthright views on mental health. The Kilgarvan politician related a story about a man who was experiencing financial difficulties and who went on to take his own life. “It was probably one of the biggest mistakes I ever made, and the mistake I made at the time I wouldn’t make again because I’d be smart enough now to hear what I was being told,” he said. He said an elderly constituent had opened a bogus non-residential account on the advice of a financial institution which eventually came to the attention of Revenue.
Deputy Healy-Rae managed to negotiate a reduction in the amount the man had to pay back, but said the man still “had to pay out virtually every penny that he had”. “He was an elderly man, worked hard all his life and he came on the phone and he said, ‘Michael you helped me every way in the world but can we do any more about this money?’ “I said, ‘Oh God, no’ and this is where I blame myself and no one else, I said to him, in other words I told him we were at the end of the line, I said, ‘No, it’ll have to be paid’ and I said, ‘You’ll have to pay it.’ “Right away he said, ‘No, no, no I won’t pay it. No, I won’t.’ And I was driving along and you see I helped him but it didn’t register. I didn’t get it.” Mr Healy-Rae found out the man had taken his own life following their phone call. “You could imagine how I felt,” he told Tiernan, adding that he then joined the committee of a psychiatric service. He said many people living in rural areas might not have people to talk to, despite the best efforts of their family, if they have family.
Ancient Kerry Fort Closed After Storm Damage
DUNBEG FORT ON the Dingle Peninsula is closed until further notice due to damage sustained in the recent stormy weather. Kerry was one of the counties in the firing line for Storm Eleanor last week, with the county included in wind and rainfall warnings since the New Year began. The fort is a popular tourist attraction, offering dramatic views of the surrounding areas. A large portion of the fort has fallen into the sea due to the storm. The site was also closed in December due to the storm damage and people are still being
urged to stay away. The Office for Public Works said: “The OPW cannot emphasise enough the absolute dangerous nature of Dunbeg Fort at this time and asks that all visitors, for their own safety, refrain from visiting the site until further notice.” Part of the site previously fell into the sea in 2014. Dunbeg Fort itself dates back around 2,500 years, and houses a circular beehive hut with a square interior. There is also a visitor’s centre on site.

I AM writing in reaction to the picketing outside Linden House. Even those who migrate by choice sometimes miss “home”. To leave your home country, and arrive, by someone else’s decision, in a foreign land must be overwhelming and disorienting. Strange food, money and language greet the refugees
or asylum seekers. Then, in Killarney, instead of a warm Irish welcome, picketers pace outside your new home. Those of us with stable, comfortable lives in a land we choose to live in should hang our heads in shame. Claudia White, 13 Mangerton View, Killarney

Thank You From Trócaire Call For Action On Hospital Waiting Lists
AT A recent meeting of Kerry County Council I called on the Minister for Health, Simon Harris, and the Government to immediately address the 16% increase since the beginning of 2017 in the number of people on waiting lists at University Hospital Kerry where according to figures from the National Treatment Purchase Fund, there are now up to 10,000 people waiting for outpatient appointments, inpatient surgery, and day-case procedures. Minister Harris needs to wake up with waiting lists getting bigger and waiting times getting longer and more and more patients ending up on trolleys every week. I am calling on the Minister and the
Government to immediately begin a programme of clearing all waiting lists. Meanwhile at the Christmas meeting of Kerry County Council, I requested the HSE as a matter of extreme urgency to introduce a ticket system at Kerry University Hospital in the A&E and outpatients departments, similar to the system that is currently being used in the Motor Tax Office. It is very unfair for members of the public, especially the old, the sick, those in pain and those in wheelchairs and on crutches, to be left waiting in queues for hours at a time. Michael Cahill (Councillor), Fianna Fail, Glenbeigh

I WOULD like to thank your readers and all from Kerry for their loyal support for Trócaire’s work in 2017. We are extremely privileged to work on behalf of the people of Ireland in some of the poorest countries in the world. That work would not be possible without the generosity of parishioners, students, teachers, clergy, volunteers and supporters who believe passionately in standing in solidarity with those less well off than themselves. 2017 was another challenging year in the fight for global justice. It was a year that saw Trócaire supporting people fleeing conflict in the Middle East, families trying to survive the hunger crisis in Kenya, Somalia, Ethiopia and South Sudan, communities in Honduras and elsewhere who are being denied their basic human rights and women all over the developing world who are liv-
ing with violence and who find themselves voiceless. The Lenten campaign highlighted the terrible toll that climate change is taking on communities in Honduras who find themselves facing the stark reality of losing their homes due to rising sea levels. Climate change has also exacerbated the food crisis in east Africa where 26 million people face starvation due to a prolonged drought. Trócaire has been supporting hundreds of thousands of people in the region with emergency food aid and longer-term development programmes which will ensure communities are not as vulnerable when these climate shocks occur. Your donations are what has made this work possible in 2017. Eamonn Meehan, Executive Director of Trócaire, Via email

Selling over 100,000 copies in its first week alone, Lullaby is now the subject of a bidding war for the rights. Its opening scene taps into every parent’s worst nightmare, when a mother comes home from work to find her two young children have been murdered by their nanny. We are then taken back to the year
before, when middle-class Parisian couple Myriam (a lawyer) and husband Paul (a music producer) employ Louise to look after their two young children. The experienced 40-year-old nanny comes with impeccable credentials and glowing references, the children instantly take to her and after a week Paul and Myriam are boasting to their friends that they’ve found the “perfect” childminder. ‘We met while crossing the street!’ IT WAS a case of their paths crossing in the most literal sense for Ella Marie (Elma) Corcoran and Robert Hennessy. Elma, from Castlemaine, and Robert met on the main pedestrian crossing in his native Newcastle West, Co Limerick, on Elma’s first-ever venture to the town. “We were both crossing in opposite directions and got introduced to each other,” said Elma. They were wed in St Mary’s Cathedral, Killarney, by Father Ben O’Brien and held their reception in The Brehon Hotel. Elma, a psychologist with Kerry Intervention and Disability Services, and Robert, a project procurement manager for SNC Lavalin in Canada, planned their big day to perfection with the help of bride’s parents Sue and Tom Corcoran and the groom’s mother and father Margaret and Paddy Hennessy. “Robert has lived in Canada since 2012 and we travelled back and forth for some time,” said Elma. “I moved out to live in Canada in 2014 and started work in a private practice. In May 2016, Robert brought me on
a trip to Montreal, and proposed to me over dinner in the Ritz Carlton Montreal. He dropped to one knee and presented me with a platinum diamond ring he had bought in Keanes jewellers in Killarney while we were home for my sister Rosetta’s wedding in May.” Lending their support were the bride’s sisters Rosetta Corcoran Cotter and Sarah Corcoran (maid of honour and bridesmaid respectively), her sisterin-law Fionnuala Horgan Corcoran and the groom’s sister Olivia Hennessy (brides-maids). “My sister Rosetta Corcoran Cotter was nine months pregnant on the wedding day but insisted on following though on being maid of honour, she is a truly wonderful and generous person,” said Elma. Also key to the celebration were Philip Lambert (best man), and Michael Cussen, Peter Curtin and Conor Casey (groomsmen) and Elma’s niece Roisin Corcoran was (flower g irl). Advice on choosing your wedding venue YOUR wedding venue is one of the most important aspects of your big day, with some couples even planning their entire nuptials around a specific venue. The first thing to take into account when choosing a wedding location is that there are likely to be two parts of your wedding to organise – the wedding ceremony and the wedding reception. As regards the ceremony, a church wedding is still the favourite choice for many couples, and most have a particular church in mind. In this case, the reception must be planned around the ceremony location. Factors such as ease of transport from service to reception will be important when planning your church wedding. Brides and grooms keen to exchange vows in a civil wedding have the option of choosing a venue that will host both the wedding ceremony and reception. The type of wedding you have will depend partly on how big it will be, so consider the venue capacity. It may sound obvious but many venues will not be able to magic up extra space from nowhere if you add 40 extra guests at the last minute. You should have a good idea of numbers before you start looking at venues. A formal meal will obviously require
more space than a stand-up buffet, so a venue whose seated capacity is 100 might well be able to accommodate 200 for a canapé reception. Bands and other entertainment can take up a large amount of space, as can a dance floor, so decide when and where you want the entertainment to take place, and check with the venue that this can be done in the space available. Castles, country houses and stately homes are among the locations many dream of for their big day. If your budget can stretch to it, this offers a oncein-a-lifetime opportunity to enjoy the use of a stunning building. There are so many different types of hotel that there’s likely to be something for everyone, from traditional to ultra-modern. Having accommodation on the spot is, of course, a big plus. If you have access to spacious gardens or other outdoor space, a marquee could be worth considering. Different types of club premises can be perfect for a wedding reception. Do plenty of research and you could find one that’s in a stunning location, too. Food and drink are among the main ingredients for a successful wedding reception, so where better to head than to a lovely restaurant or pub?

Just a few words. . .
WEDDING speeches can be nerve-wracking experiences, particularly if you tend to get anxious when asked to speak in front of a group of more than five people. But a little preparation can ensure that even shrinking violets will receive standing ovations on that big day. Delivery and content are crucial, whether you need to say a few words as bride, groom, best man, bridesmaid, or parents of the couple. First of all, don’t be afraid to ask for help in composing a memorable and inspiring speech, but at the same time make sure it is personal enough for you to feel comfortable in your delivery. If oral presentations at school or college were the stuff of nightmares, then when confronted with delivering an address to a huge wedding audience you will need
to take stock. The key, whether you are a seasoned speechmaker or a first-timer, is preparation – and plenty of it. Know your audience – and your subject matter. Try to avoid being too corny and be original wherever possible. Practise in front of a trusted friend and make sure your speech is the perfect blend seriousness and humour and, crucially, know when to conclude matters, as you don’t want an audience that’s trying hard not to nod off. Remember to pace yourself as you speak – pauses are as important as words. Enunciate your words clearly and speak slowly and expressively. There is a whole host of books and online advice devoted to the subject, so start your research now!

Jill Duggan Of Killarney Toning & Beauty Studio Has Some Advice On Toning Up
New Year, New You
TONING TABLES have been around for 28 years now – so their success speaks for itself. They help to lengthen and strengthen every muscle in the body, from your arms front and back (bingo wings), back muscles (upper, bra line, lower back, stomach, core, pelvic floor muscles, inner and outer thighs and bum. We recommend you compete a session two or three times a week and follow a low-calorie diet. Lifestyle change is a better choice than crash diets. It’s always better to have a long-term plan than a “quick fix”. Toning tables are suitable for all levels of fitness and mobility, and for every age group, whether you are 18 or 80. We also have clients with arthritis, hip or knee replacements, back pain, shoulder pain, MS and fibromyalgia to name a few. Like any exercise, you do it at your level and build up your strength and fitness levels. There is no getting down on the floor , which may be difficult for people. It’s absolutely worth booking a free trial to see for yourself how they can change your life. The toning tables are great as they fit into your schedule. It’s not a case of the same time every Monday, and if you miss a session it’s gone. We work by appointments, on the hour, every hour all day long. If you can’t make an appointment you let us know and it’s cancelled. You can then use that session another time.

outstanding results and we look forward to 2018, to the reinstatement of the Great Southern, as our next great chapter and challenge.” The hotel is currently closed for refurbishment and will be reopening on Friday, January 26, as the Great Southern Killarney.
Lollipop Day
Lollipop Volunteers Needed
THE Oesophageal Cancer Fund (OCF) needs your help this February. For the 17th annual Lollipop Day, the OCF is calling for volunteers in Kerry on Friday, 23rd and Saturday, 24th of February to help raise vital funds for oesophageal cancer. Lollipop Day involves thousands of people selling lollipops (€2) nationwide, in an effort to raise vital funds for the Oesophageal Cancer Fund. Without the generosity and support from volunteers, the OCF would not be able to provide the vital role it does in terms of awareness, research and better outcomes for patients and their families with this cancer in Ireland. If you have a few hours to spare on Fri-
day, February 23, and Saturday, February 24, pop down on your own or with friends, have some fun and help the OCF. Chief Executive of the Oesophageal Cancer Fund, Noelle Ryan, said: “We are very fortunate to have an ever increasing number of dedicated volunteers, all of whom make Lollipop Day possible and a success every year. We never have enough volunteers so if anyone or any group is interested in helping out, please contact us on www.lollipopday. ie.” For more information on Lollipop Day; to volunteer, to make a donation, go to www.lollipopday.ie or to volunteer in Kerry call Eileen on 086-069 7328.

Filmmakers Time For Change In The Frame
The Hour of the Artist “GIVE yourself a winter night, long candles, unfamiliar music, a typewriter, keyboard, an instrument, or canvas, to set fire to your mind. Surrender. Be with art. Let the room become a constellation, trust it and ride.” Those are the words of Victoria Erickson in her book Rhythms and Roads. When I think of the best ideas I’ve had I realise that many of them came to me in the hazy wee hours of the morning. I’ve often found myself unable to switch off the creative switch after midnight. So many times I have cursed my mind for only becoming clear and incredibly active when the rest of the world is asleep, but now, after some thought, I realise that night is the hour of the artist. I’ve heard so many of my artistic peers speak of this same creative syndrome!

Lamborghini Urus SUV Unleashed Event
IF YOU are looking to stand out from the crowd in 2018, Lamborghini has unveiled the Urus SUV at a VIP event in Italy in December. A groundbreaker in many ways for the famous Italian sports car maker, it’s the first Lamborghini to ever officially sport a turbocharger and it’s definitely the first to wear a torque-converter automatic transmission. There is a rock-solid piece of SUV heritage lurking in Lamborghini history, with the 1980s LM002 giving the Urus automatic legitimacy despite the brand’s sports car focus. Its equine-badged near neighbours are about to embark on an exceptionally convoluted piece of SUV justification by comparison. Lamborghini has prepared long and hard for this car, the most extreme piece of engineering yet to come off the Volkswagen Group’s MLB Evo architecture that also plays host to the Audi Q7, Bentley Bentayga, Porsche Cayenne and surprisingly Audi A4. On paper, it’s impressive. The biturbo V8 pumps out 850Nm of torque and 478kW of power. By comparison, the just-launched Porsche Panamera Turbo S e-Hybrid Sport Turismo uses the core of this same V8 and still has to couple it to a 400Nm electric motor to reach the exact same torque peak the Urus stretches to on just petrol power alone.

2018 WRC THE WRC season kicks off in Monte Carlo on 25th of this month. It will be interesting to see which teams have learnt most from a full year running the current regulations. Privateer team, M-Sport and Sebastian Ogier took the 2017 spoils, Hyundai second, Toyota third. Citroen were the biggest losers of 2017 finishing last in the championship standings. However switching focus to this year’s car mid-season last year should seem them competitive early in the season. Hyundai have constantly got stronger year after year and with their new signing, Andreas Mikkelsen should see them at the fore early in the season. And the surprise last year was WRC returnee, Toyota in what was a development year for both car and team proved that they are in the hunt for wins this year particularly with new signing Ott Tanak from Ford. cusing on the Citroen team with local co-driver Paul Nagle alongside Kris Meeke again this year (winners of Mexico and Spain in 2017), driving the sister car is again, Waterford man, Craig Breen. However, Craig will be sidelined for 3 events to make room the return of 9-time WRC champion Sebastian Loeb. The biggest news over the winter is Ford’s return as a manufacturer and more importantly the retention of Sebastian Ogier’s services within the team will make them clear favourites. But with a full year of current regulations in the bag for all teams and winning drivers across those teams, the year will be without a doubt exciting.

BMW Has Drifted Into The Record Books News Briefs ... The German car giant has smashed the Guinness World Record for the world’s longest continuous drift over eight hours – with the help of a very risky manoeuvre. Covering a distance of 374.17 kilometres, the BMW team smashed the previous record of 144.12km set by Toyota. The car used in the record setting run was the new BMW M5, the all-wheel drive machine which is powered by a 4.4-litre twin-turbo V8 engine that produces 441kW and 750Nm. And it is these power figures and the corresponding claimed fuel use of 10.5L/100km that cause the headache for BMW’s drift aces.
Hyundai Reportedly Working On 911-Rivalling Sportscar
Hyundai is reportedly working on a sportscar to take on cars like the Porsche 911 Turbo and Lamborghini Huracán. The Korean automaker has dabbled with mildly sporty coupes like the current Veloster and the previous Tiburon, but has never had a real fire-breathing machine to tackle the high-performance establishment.
BMW found the main obstacle for gaining back its previous drift record set in 2013 was that
the M5 kept running out of fuel, so the quirky solution was to refuel mid-drift.
‘Drunk’ Russian Crashes Tank Into Store, Goes Shopping After crashing the tank, the joyrider then walked into the shop and tried to steal a bottle of wine. The man stole the tank-like vehicle on caterpillar tracks from a military driving school in the far northern Murmansk region. The joyrider drove the armoured vehicle through his small town of Apatity where he badly damaged a parked car and then careered through the front of the supermarket.
Loeb Is Out Of The Dakar
Loeb, who won Tuesday’s fourth stage for Peugeot and was second overall, stopped five kilometres into the 266km fifth stage from San Juan de Marcona to Arequipa, the last overnight stop before the rally enters Bolivia and the high-altitude stages. He lost two hours waiting for assistance before continuing but, with co-driver Daniel Elena in pain from the jolt in the dunes, had to accept defeat.

32ND ANNIVERSARY BARTLETT
BURKE
In loving memory of Michael Burke Scrahan Court, Killarney Who passed away on 19th January 2017 On the first anniversary of Michael’s death, his wife, Mela and children, John, Michael, Sarah and Emily remember a loving man who fought a difficult illness with great bravery and tenacity. We miss his steady presence, good counsel, his attentive ear, his great sense of humour and interest and support in our lives. We would like to take this opportunity to thank the staff of Kerry University Hospital, Tralee and in particular, the staff of the Palliative Care Unit for the wonderful care and compassion shown to Michael throughout his illness. Thanks also to the Hospice Home Care Team for their care and support in working with the family to enable Michael to spend his last days at home. Thanks in particular to Dr. Richard Bambury and to Dr. Patricia Sheahan for their attentiveness in the delivery of Michael’s treatment throughout his illness.
Thanks to the members of An Garda Siochana, and in particular, Michael’s former colleagues in the force who provided a guard of Honour both at the church and at the graveside. Thanks also to the choir and in particular to Matt Wallen, a friend of the family who sang at the funeral. Our sincere thanks to Fr. Jim Linehan for his kind, sincere and consoling words and to all the priests who con-celebrated with him at the funeral mass and burial. We are grateful to all those who participated in the liturgy and made it such a moving celebration of Michael’s life and love. Thanks to O’ Shea’s funeral Directors who guided and supported us through the funeral proceedings in such a calm and dignified manner. This meant a lot to the family. The Holy Sacrifice of the Mass will be offered for your intentions. Ring the bells that still can ring Forget your perfect offering There is a crack, a crack in everything That’s how the light gets in. (Cohen)
In loving memory of Harry Bartlett late of 32 St Brendan’s Place who died on January 12th 1986. For someone who meant so much, And loved by all he knew, Who left behind a trail of tears, And precious memories too, We loved the sunshine of his smile, And kindness in his heart, But heaven saw that he was tired, This meant we had to part, Dear Angels hear our prayer, Please guard him with gentle wings, And tend to him with care, For he was someone wonderful, That words cannot convey, How much we wish that he was here, Once more with us today.

In loving memory of Patricia Roberts New York (Fort Jay) and Dundrum, Dublin who passed away on 15th January 2016.
Even in our darkest days, Since we’ve been apart, Memories of the times we shared, Help to warm our hearts. Everyday we miss the smile, That no one can replace, But still it brings us comfort, In the sadness that we face. Life is full of mysteries, That no one can explain, But we know someday, somewhere, We will meet again. Until we do we’ll find the strength, To live through each new day, Grateful for the happy years Before you went away.
If we listen really close In the silence of the night We hear your voice of comfort to us And say that you’re alright But it is often hard to understand Why certain things must be And the reasons why they happen Are so often hard to see But we find comfort in the knowledge That God is always there to keep The ones we love so much Forever in his care. Missed and loved always Your Nana O’Sullivan and all the gang in Maughautourig. xxx
Sadly missed by Bernie, Mohammed, Allanah and Laila. xx
Our hearts are full of memories With pride we speak your name, Though life must go on without you, It will never be the same. Those special days will not return When we were all together But the love and memories in our hearts, Will stay with us forever. Memories drift to scenes long past, Time rolls on but memories last, Sunshine passes, shadows fall, Love and remembrance outlasts them all. Always loved and sadly missed, Grandad O’Riordan.

O’RIORDAN Treasured memories of a kind and wonderful nephew and cousin, Ian O’Riordan who died on 14th January 2013. We love you so much. In loving memory of Ian O’Riordan who died on 14th January 2013. In loving memory of Ian O’Riordan who died on 14th January 2013. It is five years now and everyone is just going through the motions, But no matter how hard we try, We can’t escape our emotions. The tears still flow And our hearts are still broken, The hurt and pain are left unsaidNot spoken. Time is a healer they say But I can’t believe it Since you went away It is harder now than ever before We miss you each day more and more. There is a cold harsh reality That you are gone We just want you back our precious one. Miss your laughter and your hugs. Rest in peaceAnnie, Pius and family.
5TH ANNIVERSARY O’RIORDAN
Unendingly I mourn my precious son Too early yet this earthly home he left, Perfidious sleep confounded Nature’s order To leave his loves perpetually bereft. Those golden dreams and aspirations, The seed of yesterday a withered bloom, Those baubles which Are cause to celebrate, In death now mock us gently From his tomb. How treacherous death does steal on youth’s exuberance, To wreak such havoc from The ecstasy of life, Where once was only joy And future promise Tormented hearts endure eternal strife.
Everywhere we go, We know you are always with us. If we would go to the beach we would write your name in the sand, watch the waves come in and See your name slowly fade away. It is a reminder of how cruel life can be and how our time here on earth is so short, so enjoy every moment While you can. We love and miss you everyday but we know you are beside us every step of the way. We miss and love you lots, Ger, Noreen, Sarah and Laura.

Precious memories of our dear nephew/ cousin Ian O’Riordan who died on 14th January 2013.
31ST ANNIVERSARY RYAN
A trail of broken hearts Leads to a lonely grave, A cold wind blows to remind us Of how we feel without you. One by one we place a token At this sacred spot. No one can take away the precious time That we spent with you Ian. We store each memory in our hearts. When we all get together, we laugh, we cry, we remember you Ian With that great big smile. We will comfort one another here As your Nana and grandad comfort you. Until we meet again, I ask God to protect and comfort you and the ones You loved so much. Your Aunt Sheila and cousin Paul.
It’s all part of God’s great plan ... Which remains a mystery to man. We cannot understand His ways Nor can we count our earthly days. But who are we to question and doubt? God knoweth well what He’s about; He knew she longed to “go to sleep” Where only angels, a vigil keep. The pain of living grew too great No longer could she stay and wait; She did not want to leave you, dear, But she had finished her work down here. So she closed her eyes And when she awoke, These are the words the Master spoke ... “Welcome, dear child, You are Home at last, And now the burden of living is past.” “There’s work for you In My Kingdom, dear And you are needed and wanted here.” So weep not, she has just gone on ahead, Don’t think of her as being dead. She’s out of sight for a little while, And you’ll miss her touch & Her little smile, But you know she is safe In the home above Where there is nothing But Peace and Love. And, surely, you would not deny her peace ... And you’re glad that she Has found release. Think of her there as a soul that is free, And Home at last, Where she wanted to be. Miss you ma always and forever. Love always your son Owen and daughter in law Margaret. Xxx
Sadly missed by your father John, brother Liam, sisters Melissa and Saerlaith and by Treasa.

Garden Magic
Plenty Of Jobs To Be Done…
THE dark days of winter are soon to be a memory! What can we look forward to this early in the spring? One of my favourite surprises every year is wood ginger, or anemone ranunculoides. It’s bright yellow flowers peep above the ground before the leaves form, making it an ideal companion for snowdrops, crocuses and especially grape hyacinths. They naturalise quite happily in a humus-rich soil. As always there are plenty of jobs to be done in your garden. All fruit trees and bushes can be pruned safely at this time of year with the exception of all Prunus varieties, plums, peaches and so on. They will be susceptible to silver leaf virus if they are pruned now. However apple trees and pear trees should really be pruned by now. It is a great time of year to disinfect glasshouses and seed trays, in time for the season of sowing which lies ahead! If you are eager to start off, and if you are lucky enough to have a heated glasshouse, or a heated propagator, you can start sowing geraniums, petunias and begonias. Also red peppers, chilli peppers and aubergines can be started off. You will need a temperature of approximately 24C to have successful germination. Damping off is a problem, due in part to low light levels which causes plants to be a bit weaker than we would like. There are several ways to prevent this. First of all, sterilize all equipment and use seed and cutting compost rather than homemade compost. Secondly, sow seeds at the correct depth. Thirdly, do not overcrowd the seeds when sowing, to aid air circulation. If you are not the owner of a heated propagator you can still sow sweetpeas for an early display! Potatoes can also be grown indoors in a polytunnel or greenhouse, in pots or potato grow bags, somewhere they will have some protection from frost. Charlotte potatoes are a good variety to try. The best thing of all, in my opinion, is the planning that is to be done in January…. From the comfort of a warm room!

Scotts Lakers V LIT Celtics: Five Things To Watch Out For
Scotts Lakers St Pauls Killarney. Pic: Eamonn Keogh
The Lakers will be hoping to start their Division 1B campaign off right, writes Adam Moynihan
National League: Division 1B Scotts Lakers v LIT Celtics Saturday, January 13 at 7.30pm (Killarney Sports and Leisure Centre) 1. A FRESH START This weekend’s clash marks the beginning of the second half of the season for the Scotts Lakers. Their 10th place finish in Division 1 means that they’ll be operating in Division 1B from here on in along with LYIT Donegal, Kilkenny, the Dublin Lions, the Titans, Sligo and Saturday’s opponents, the LIT Celtics. In an ideal world I’m sure the players would like to be mixing it with the big dogs in Division 1A but a stint in the second tier might not be a bad thing. It is, after all, the Lakers’ first season back at this level and with their points from the first half of campaign carrying over, they will fancy their chances of competing for the 1B title (aka The Shield). They are currently third on 15 points, just three behind joint leaders LYIT and Kilkenny.
2. CAN THE LAKERS PUT THEIR CUP DISAPPOINTMENT BEHIND THEM? Hopes were high heading into last Saturday’s President’s Cup semi-final against Ballincollig but the Lakers fell to a disappointing 74-98 defeat. The victory over Fr Mathews in the previous round was
probably the highlight of the season to date so to crash out so emphatically in the last four will have hurt the players. They will be hoping to get their season back on track with a win this weekend.
3. ROOM FOR IMPROVEMENT A quick glance at the stats shows that there are a few areas that might need some tweaking as the Lakers enter the second phase of the season. Only two teams in the entire fourteen-team league (the Titans and the Dublin Lions) have turned the ball over more frequently this season which is a worrying statistic. The Lakers also have the second worst blocks per game record which is surprising considering the size they have in the team. They shoot the ball efficiently – 4th in field goal percentage and 6th in three-point percentage – but they’re 11th in both field goals attempted and three pointers attempted. They’re also 11th in free throws attempted. Not getting to the line is often indicative of a team that doesn’t really attack the basket enough, which again is surprising when the Lakers often have big men like Pádraig Lucey, Andrew Fitzgerald and Antuan Bootle in their starting line-up. All of this means that the points haven’t been easy to come by. They’re 10th in the league when it comes to scoring, averaging 77.2 points per game. The addition of Dalian Mason, a guard who likes to shoot the ball, might correct these numbers a bit but I’m sure Cormac O’Donoghue will be hoping for an improvement on the offensive end from his team in 2018.
4. LAKERS HOPING TO REPEAT THE TRICK The Lakers will be hoping for a repeat of the last meeting between the sides when they ran out 105-93 winners up in Limerick in September. Justin Tuason top-scored for the Killarney club that day with 25 points while Mark Greene also chipped in with 22. LIT eventually went on to finish 11th in the league and are currently on a four-game losing streak. They have relied heavily on the scoring prowess of American sharpshooter Matt St Amour so the Lakers will need to find some way of stifling him. It’s easier said than done.
5. ST AMOUR IS CAPABLE OF SHOOTING THE LIGHTS OUT The 6’3” guard from Vermont has been electric so far this season. In his first three games he scored 56, 53 (against the Lakers) and 46, draining 27 threes from just 30 attempts. His numbers have “dropped off” slightly since then but he has scored 30+ points in every single outing so far and is averaging a staggering 40.77 points per game. He is shooting over 60% from the field, 55% from three point land and 90% from the line. Crazy stuff. You’d like to think that there’s no such thing as a one-man team but St Amour missed the Celtics’ last fixture of 2017 against Carlow. They lost 98-34. It will be interesting to see whether or not the Lakers can contain him on Saturday. Either way, it could be a good show.

President’s Cup Semi-Final
Scotts Lakers St Paul’s Killarney 74 Ballincollig BC 98 DESPITE enjoying an impressive start, Scotts Lakers were overpowered by Ballincollig in the Hula Hoops President’s Cup Semi-Final in The Neptune Stadium Cork last Saturday night. The Cork side took over in the second quarter and their advantage was never really threatened after this. American Cameron Clark led the way for Ballincollig with 39 points against a Killarney side that failed to play to true potential on the night. Scotts Lakers started in convincing fashion with Dailian Mason, Antuan Bootle and Philip O’Connor helping them to an early 10-5 lead. However Clark found his range and it was 10-10 midway through the first quarter. Lakers kept in touch with Mason prominent while Dan Griffin and Padraig Lucey caused problems for Ballincollig under the boards. Mark Greene added a three-pointer but Clark and the O’Sullivan cousins – Ronan and Ciaran – were dominant and the Cork side enjoyed a 22-19 lead at the end of the first quarter. Leading 28-23 after one minute, Ballincollig extended that advantage to 37-23 after three minutes with Clark and the O’Sullivans continuing to impress. Their pressurising full court press forced a succession of turnovers from Scotts Lakers while the Killarney side also failed to convert several free throws. Ballincollig led 48- 28 with three minutes
left in the half. Baskets from Mason, Bootle, Griffin and Greene narrowed it to 55-39 at half time. It was still a big mountain to climb for Scotts Lakers as Mason and Bootle gave a glimmer of hope with baskets that closed the gap to 55-43 early in second half. However it was the closest they could get as there was no stopping Cameron Clark and Ballincollig led 62-43 after three minutes. Ballincollig made shot after shot and committed little or no violations in what was an extremely strong quarter for the Corkmen and they led 79-53 entering the final period. The final quarter was a mere formality as Ballincollig’s advantage extended to 30 points at one stage, 83-53. Another three-pointer from Dailian Mason and a succession of late scores from Antuan Bootle brought it back to 84-66 midway through final quarter. Bootle had 12 points in the final quarter where Lakers actually outscored Ballincollig 2119 but it was all too little too late at this stage to threaten the Cork side’s dominance. Ballincollig enjoyed a comfortable 24-point win in the end and progress to the Cup final to meet Keane’s Killorglin. Scotts Lakers will reflect on what might have been. It was never going to be easy against opposition that has one of the best Americans in the league in Cameron Clark and two outstanding Irish players in Ciaran and Ronan
O’Sullivan. It is back to league action for the rest of the season now for Scotts Lakers and reaching a cup semi-final was still a big achievement in their first season back on the national stage after such a long absence. Top scorers, Scotts Lakers St Paul’s Killarney: Antuan Bootle 27, Dailian Mason 13, Padraig Lucey 12, Mark Greene 9, Dan Griffin 8, Philip O’Connor 3, Andrew Fitzgerald 2; Ballincollig, Cameron Clark 39, Ciaran O’Sullivan 18, Ronan O’Sullivan 18.
HOME GAME
Scotts Lakers are at home in the league tomorrow, Saturday, January 13, and will host Limerick Celtics in Killarney Sports Centre at 7.30pm. The sides clashed earlier this season with Lakers winning 10593, despite a whopping 53 points from Limerick’s outstanding American shooter Matt St Amour. He will require close attention as Scotts Lakers aim to put the cup disappointment behind them and have a successful start to the second half of the league season.

St Paul’s Raise The Roof In Castleisland WELL done to the St Paul’s boys U14 team who won the U14 tournament at the recent Castleisland Christmas Blitz. The boys were out on December 28 for their first game with a great win over a classy first division St Brendan’s team from Tralee, and won on a scoreline of 23-18. They won their second game 18-12 against another first division team, Cougars. The boys put up a
massive battle against Cougars, they only scored two points in the first half but they stood tall and worked ferociously in the second half to take the victory. These results got them straight through to the final on Saturday in front of a big crowd. They boys were up against table toppers St Brendan’s of Tralee again in the final. They went down in the first half by a few baskets but came out after half time with determination and great play. They went
on to take the win 16-14. It was down to the wire and a great match on final day. Congratulations to all the boys. Luke Crowley also received player of the tournament, well done. A special mention to coaches Tim O’Sullivan and Rory O’Flaherty and team manager Padraig O’Connor for the work they put in with team and taking time over the Christmas holidays to coach the boys and travel to Castleisland with them.

Lucky Lynch Is December’s Fantasy Champ KILLARNEY ATHLETIC forward Shane Lynch had a very lucky Christmas as he scooped the Killarney Advertiser fantasy football Manager of the Month award for December. Shane picked up an impressive total of 495 points over the course of the month - a remarkable feat for someone who doesn’t really know anything about soccer. He captained Mohamed Salah ahead of Liverpool’s game against Leicester on December 30 and the lively Egyptian scored twice in the Reds’ 2-1 win to earn Shane 28 points. Clean sheets from Nick Pope, Nicolás Otamendi, Phil Jones and Shane Duffy also helped as the Spa native racked up 70 points in the final gameweek of the year. In the end, he just about did enough to see off the challenge of Eoin Fitzgerald in second while Pádraig Nagle finished a few points back in third. Lynch has also shot up the overall table. He is now 25 points behind runaway leader Kevin McCarthy with Ryan Scott a further 29 points behind in third place. Sports columnist Adam Moynihan was slow to congratulate Shane on his win. “I’m very surprised by this result,” he said. “I’m close friends with Shane and to say that he doesn’t know his soccer would be an understatement. Sometimes fellas just get lucky.” Speaking at the prize-giving ceremony, Shane agreed with Adam’s assessment. “I don’t know a whole pile about sport in general to be honest and I wouldn’t have much interest in fantasy football,” he confessed. “The only reason I entered is because the lads are always on about it and I didn’t want to feel left out.” “I give the entire thing very little consideration. I just pick players at random and hope for the best,” he added. Shane said he planned to use his €50 voucher for Brian James to purchase a new beret or possibly some kind of top hat.

Stam The Hero As Blues Come Back From The Dead It was honours even as Celtic and Athletic played out a memorable six-goal thriller in front of a bumper crowd, writes Killarney Athletic’s Adam Moynihan
Premier A Killarney Athletic 3-3 Killarney Celtic
There was high drama in Woodlawn on Sunday as Killarney Athletic came from 3-0 down to snatch an incredible draw against fierce rivals and fellow title contenders Killarney Celtic. It was another epic derby between two of Kerry’s top teams and the huge crowd (or at least those who stayed to the end) certainly got their money’s worth. Remarkably, the last three league games between the teams, excluding the last season’s final and subsequent replay, have produced no fewer than 16 goals. Celtic definitely felt as though they owed us one after last season and they bossed the opening exchanges as we struggled to find our feet on the icy pitch. We were just off the pace for some reason and when Wayne Sparling blocked my clearance and went down under a challenge from Shane Doolan, referee Derek O’Shea pointed to the spot. Centre back Jamie Spillane duly converted and already we were up against it. Things got even better for the visitors when Wayne Sparling got in behind and finished well from a narrow angle and when Danny Roche cut inside and made it 3-0 before the break, Celtic were coasting. We were very disappointed with ourselves at half time and said whatever about the result, we at least needed to go out and battle in the second half. To be honest, I don’t think we played a million times better in the second half but we started to go a bit more direct and it seemed to cause Celtic some problems. If you keep putting the ball in the box you’re going to get a chance eventually and substitute Seán Cournane, who was supposed to start but dropped down to the bench due to illness, got what looked like a consolation goal in the 75th minute. Even at that stage, a comeback was looking extremely unlikely. We were in the ascendancy but Celtic had a couple of chances to kill the game off. Fortunately for us, they weren’t able to take them. Another substitute, Pauly O’Donoghue, was also making his presence felt and when he got on the end of a cross and hit the post with a volley, Shane Lynch was on hand to stoop and head home from close range. All of a sudden, in the 89th minute, it
was game on. As the clock ticked over into stoppage time, we continued to rain crosses and diagonals down on the Celtic box but we just couldn’t get it to bounce our way. Then, in the 93rd minute, the ball fell to Conor Keane around 15 yards out from goal. He did well to control with his chest and force a half volley goalwards but his effort was blocked. Luckily for us, it rebounded straight to Mike ‘Stam’ O’Dono-
It was only a draw but obviously, the way the game went, it felt like a win ghue who showed incredible composure to take the ball down in the middle of the crowded penalty area and fire a low shot past Spillane in the Celtic goal. The celebrations that followed will live long in the memory as Stam whipped off his top and slid along his chest (on the one part of the pitch
that was still frozen) before getting mobbed by teammates. Unbelievably, we actually had a chance to win it when Ryan O’Carroll slipped in Tony Brosnan down the right seconds after the restart but he sliced his cross and the keeper caught it underneath the crossbar. It was only a draw but obviously, the way the game went, it felt like a win. The encouraging thing for us is that we played poorly against a very good side and still managed to get something out of the game. The point keeps us top although Celtic still have two games in hand and there’s a very long way to go in the season. We have another home game this weekend against Castleisland (Sunday at 11.30am) so we’ll be hoping to extend our lead with a win. Celtic, meanwhile, are away to Willow Park of Westmeath in the last 32 of the FAI Junior Cup. That game is on Saturday at 3pm. Athletic: Brendan Kealy; Conor Farrell, Paudie O’Connor, Shane Doolan, Adam Moynihan; Michael O’Donoghue, Jamie Doolan, Ryan O’Carroll; Tony Brosnan, Will Courtney; Shane Lynch. Subs used: Conor Keane, Seán Cournane and Pauly O’Donoghue. Celtic: David Spillane; Chris O’Leary, Jamie Spillane, John McDonagh, Brendan Falvey; Danny Roche, Pa McGrath, Matt Keane, Wayne Sparling; Cathal O’Shea and Peter McCarthy. Club Welcomes All-Weather Windfall Words: Eve Kelliher
Shane Doolan, Billy Hennigan, Junior Minister Brendan Griffin, John Delaney, FAI, and Mike O’Shea, chairman, Killarney Athletic.
Rugby News ... Words: Liam Murphy WITH the last of the seasonal interprovincial matches taking place last weekend, attention turns to the European Cup over the next few weeks. Last weekend was another action-packed weekend for the Irish sides as Leinster hosted Ulster, while Munster hosted Connacht at Thomond Park on a bitterly cold night. Leinster won three from three comprehensively beating
Ulster 38 points to 7 in front of a packed RDS. Leinster are in a very rich vein of form at the moment and will surely fancy themselves in Europe this year. Munster were slow off the blocks against Connacht and it looked like Discipline would be the downfall yet again this season as Connacht scored first with a penalty within the first few minutes. However, Darren O’Shea, Andrew Conway and Keith Earls scored tries while the returning Conor Murray scored a brace to earn the bonus point win. Ian Keatley scored 14 points from the bot effectively settling the Keatley/Hanrahan debate for the moment.

FAI chief executive John Delaney and Minister for Sport Brendan Griffin were guests of honour at Killarney Athletic AFC grounds on Wednesday. As well as rolling out the red carpet for its guests, the club welcomed the cash windfall the pair announced. Killarney Athletic has received a grant of €40,000 which will go towards its all-weather training pitch. “Hugh thanks again to the FAI and John Delaney for matching our initial Sports Capital Grant under Minister Brendan Griffin,” said club spokeswoman Mary McCarrick.
In the end the men in red won 39 points to 13, salvaging something from the festive schedule. This weekend Munster travel to Paris to take on Racing 92 at the newly opened U arena. Last October Munster beat Racing 14-7 at Thomond Park and will be looking to strengthen their position at the top of the group with a win. No doubt it will be an emotional return to Paris for the squad as Paris will always remind us of the late great Anthony Foley. Let’s hope the lads can kick on and with the returning big guns cement the top spot ahead of the home fixture against fellow French side Castres at Thomond Park the following weekend.

THE Killarney U-16 rugby team travelled to Ballincollig on Saturday to play their first game in the Munster Club Cup Competition. Killarney started with their usual high tempo attacking style and for the first 20 minutes of the game tested the home defence with forwards and backs combining effectively. D Denis Koyun, Matt McAuliffe and Craig McKenzie Vass were very prominent counter rucking and recycling possession. Eventually Craig McKenzie Vass crashed through the cover to score and Donnchadh Grealy converted for a 7-0 lead. Unfortunately the visitors could not convert the pressure into points and the experience and ability of the home side became evident when they scored a well-constructed try from Diarmuid Nolan after creating an overlap. The half-time score read 7-5. Ballincollig regrouped at half-time and struck a decisive blow shortly after the re-start when Cathal McDermott scored to give them the lead. Killarney tried bravely to get a foothold in opposition territory with
strong running from Jose Ferrero and Gary Randles. However, they came up against a tough resolute defence. The outcome was sealed 10 minutes from the end when Patrick Kelly’s try secured a victory for the home side. In spite of defeat this was an incredible experience for the Killarney youngsters playing at the top level of Munster competition for the first time. They competed bravely and skilfully and were in no way over-awed by the occasion. Invaluable experience was gained and lessons learned for the next game home to Cobh on January 27. The team on the day were, forwards Denis Koyun, Brendan O’Donoghue, Matt McAuliffe, Sam Casey, Evan Mannix, John McCarthy, Padraig Talbot and Craig McKenzie Vass; back line Peter Walsh, Donnchadh Grealy, Mark Sheehan, Jose Ferrero, Tomas Clifford, Gary Randles, Liam Randles and Dion O’Neill. Replacements on the day were Adam Cronin, Adam McSweeney, Jack O’Connell, James Kennelly, Josh Campbell and Robert Nealon.

MEK United U12: MEK 1 – 1 ST. BRENDAN’S PARK B. Jack Aherne - playing his first match at centre back putting in a brilliant display. Darragh O’Neill in goal commanded his area. Roan Daly and Cian Myers (fullbacks) both put in a great shift to make sure we went in at half time level at 0-0. 5 minutes into the second-half and Park broke the deadlock. Their midfielder scored a worldy into the top corner from 25 yards. Tadgh Gosney unleashed a shot from the edge of the box and the Park keeper did well to get a hand to it. Ben Brosnan, Tom Woods, Sean Dennehy and Sam Lenihan came on to make sure we saw out the game without conceding another goal with Scott Carlton and Stuart Scott creating chances. Both sides were happy to take a point. Every player can be really proud of the effort they put in. Thanks to Park B for a tough but fair game. MOM: Jack Aherne. U14: Fenit 3 MEK 1. A great start for MEK saw a cool finish by Kevin Harant give us the lead early in the first half. Fenit deservedly equalised mid-way through the half.
