Calls for multi-storey car park as plans for Áras Phádraig unveiled
Kerry County Council have been warned that they “will fail the people of Killarney for decades” if they don’t include a multi-storey car park in the first phase of the Áras Phádraig redevelopment. | By Sean Moriarty Plans for the site, which has been idle since the Franciscan Friars donated it to the people of Killarney in 2009, were finally unveiled at Wednesday’s Killarney Municipal District Meeting. The meeting took place at Kilcummin GAA clubhouse at the invitation of Mayor Marie Moloney who lives in the area. Each term a mayor invites a municipal meeting to their home-patch. Plans include a theatre, and outdoor public plaza, office space, and a

400-space car park and a medical centre. Further down the line, there are plans to build a multi-storey car park to the rear of the new development but Kerry County Council officials said this part of the construction will not happen until the other elements were up and running.
The project is being funded by the Urban Regeneration Development Fund for Killarney which was announced in March this year. A total of €21 million has been set aside for the regeneration of the town centre of which Kerry County Council is providing €5.5m. The town centre project is wide-ranging and includes the development of a craft
quarter in the town centre, works on the Jarvey Stand at the HaHa, and further potential for more outdoor dining facilities. The Áras Phádraig plan is the first phase of this broad project and details were presented to the Killarney Municipal District meeting by engineer David Doyle. Elected officials broadly welcomed the new plans but called for the multi-storey car park to be a given priority over the other elements of the project. “By not providing a multi-storey car park we will have failed the people of Killarney for decades,” said Cllr Niall Kelleher, who is also president of Killarney Chamber of Commerce and Tourism. Mr Doyle explained that Kerry County Council is governed by public spending rules and that building a multi-storey car park ahead, or alongside, the rest of the project would not be possible at this time.
Medical centre part of redevelopment plans | By Sean Moriarty A new primary medical centre will form one of the centre points of the redevelopment of the Áras Phádraig on Lewis Road. At Wednesday’s Killarney Municipal District meeting Kerry County Council engineer David Doyle presented plans for the future development of the town
centre site that has been idle since 2009. One of the key elements of the new project is the construction of the medical centre on the site. The centre will include doctor’s and dentist surgeries, an X-ray department and other primary care medical facilities. “The Health Service Executive has given a commitment in writing to provide a primary care [unit] on this site,” Mr
Doyle told the meeting. This new facility build would be part of a multi-phased plan to redevelop the Áras Phádraig site. “A commitment in writing is a hugely important step,” said Cllr Brendan Cronin. The cost of construction of the care centre would be borne by the HSE, however as part of the deal, Kerry County Council would have to provide a construction ready site to the HSE.
Several councillors raised questions on the legality of the ownership of the land should the project go ahead in the format it was presented and questioned what would happen if the HSE decided to vacate the area in the future. It is proposed that Kerry County Council will supply a serviced site to the HSE and that the health service would then offer a tender to construct the medical care centre on that site.

Craft quarter mooted for town centre | By Sean Moriarty Killarney could get its own dedicated ‘Craft Quarter’ if plans unveiled this week come to fruition. On Wednesday, elected Killarney Municipal District councillors, were shown plans for the future of the Áras Phádraig. The redevelopment of the Lewis Road site is part of a greater urban regeneration project for the town (see main story on page six). Wednesday’s presentation concentrated on the Áras Phádraig element of the regeneration plan but tentative aspects
of other projects were also revealed. It includes a ‘Craft Quarter’ in town centre laneways that link Plunkett St to Main St and include places like Glebe Lane and Old Market Lane. The Áras Phádraig presentation was given by Kerry County Council engineer David Doyle who explained that the overall plan will give the town centre a “more pedestrianised feel”. “Further plans on the town realm will be given next month or early next year,” he told the meeting, “The ‘Craft Quarter’ will give a more pedestrian feel to the town.”
TV SHOW: Classical singer Grace Foley from Killarney will appear on tomorrow night's 'Last Singer Standing' on RTE One.
Will Grace be the Last Singer Standing? She loves to sing - but will Killarney’s Grace Foley be the last one standing tomorrow night (Saturday) - viewers will have to tune in to find out. | By Michelle Crean Classical singer Grace from Ross Road will face competition in the new RTÉ One singing competition ‘Last Singer Standing’ beginning at 8.15pm as she tries to get through to the next stage, and ultimately the final - to win €25,000! The new mom, who had daughter Anna in late April, said she applied to appear on the show, hosted by Westlife’s Nicky Byrne, to one day show her daughter to go for things you love in life. Her husband John had told her about the new RTÉ show, and before she knew it, she had filled in an application form. Then she got an email from Shinawil, the production company who came up with the format for the show. “I was invited to an online interview and, before I knew what was happening, I was on a train to Dublin for an in-person audition! I hadn't left Kerry in years at this point, and my last audition for anything was a very long time ago. I felt scared, but determined to give it my best shot. I got to sing in front of actual humans again and it was wonderful!” A few weeks later she heard that she was going to be part of the show. “I was so over the moon. The day of recording was a phenomenal experience.
We were treated like royalty and got to meet incredibly warm people including our lovely host, Nicky Byrne. Nicky guided and encouraged us the whole way. Our pop panel included Samantha Mumba, Nadine Coyle and Joey Fantone who were very supportive and gave only constructive criticism.” She added that the show is not about shame or embarrassment. “This show is about fun and great singing. I do have to admit, it is a very daunting situation as you don't know what song you could be faced with and you could even end up trying to sing a song you don't know! Will I be brave and press that buzzer on my first show? Only time will tell!” And, there is a real sense of 'serendipity' to all this, she added. “Almost 20 years ago I appeared in another Shinawil production, 'You're a Star'. On this show I performed Phil Coulter's song, 'Remember Me, Recuerdame'. Well, I just recorded this song, after all this time, and Phil has shared it and given it his own stamp of approval. I feel that everything happens for a reason and when it should. I am releasing a new album, 'Unmasked', on November 28 and this includes the songs that have been part of my own story this past few years.”
€20m project to tackle town's traffic blackspots | By Sean Moriarty Close on €20 million has be allocated to seven traffic blackspots in the wider Killarney area and works will be completed in phases over the next few years. Traffic blackspots included in the funding announced Wednesday, include works on the Madam’s Hill to Cleeny roundabout section of the Tralee Road and the Coolcaslagh junction on the Cork Road. The seven projects will be completed in a phased basis, and will include provisions for active travel like walking and cycling. The first of the seven projects, the Gap Road to the Golden Nugget section through Fossa will be unveiled next month or very early next year. This phase will include a new pedestrian crossing in the village and will link with a future project known locally as the Narrow Road near Killea. This section will eventually
link with ongoing works in the Killorglin area that will improve active travel arrangements between the two towns. A deer detection system, similar to one being used in County Laois, is to be trialled at the Ballydowney section of the road. Closer to town, works on the Madam’s Hill, Ballychasheen and Coolcaslagh junctions have also been included in the plan. The Lewis Road junction realignment is also included but plans for the realignment of the Muckross Road traffic management plan will be announced at a later date. Elected members of Killarney Municipal District were briefed on the plans by Paul Curry of the Kerry National Road Design Office on Wednesday but he was unable to give an exact date for the start of the projects. “The foundations are laid for seven projects in the near future,” he told the meeting. “One will be followed by another. The timeline is the near future.”

Donal could be named 'A New Local Hero'
Killarney's Donal Lucey is "a real contender" to win 'A New Local Hero' national award according Hot Press editor Niall Stokes. | By Michelle Crean
The 20-year-old singer-songwriter from Muckross Road was first nominated by Radio Kerry and then made the shortlist after 125 artists nationwide were whittled down to 25 to win the award. Now, the judging will get even more intense as the 25 is reduced to five – who will play the Academy, in Dublin, on November 18 – on a showcase night, at which the recipient of the A New Local Hero 2021 award will be revealed. A New Local Hero is a feature of Irish Music Month which saw Hot Press join forces with 25 radio stations all over Ireland to support Irish music and Irish musicians. Donal, who is studying music full-time in the Cork School of Music, could win €5,000 in cash, €5,000 worth of gear from XMusic, see the release of a single through the renowned Rubyworks record label., get a guaranteed 30 plays on all 25 stations, adding up to a minimum of 750 in all, have national exposure via an interview in Hot Press and a full PR campaign around the release of the single. “The calibre of the artists is brilliant,” Hot Press editor Niall Stokes said. Killarney Advertiser helps HeartBeat’s recent fundraiser | By Sean Moriarty The mighty power of the Killarney Advertiser has helped HeartBeat Killarney purchase a new Automated External Defibrillator. In recent weeks the Killarney Advertiser promoted HeartBeat’s ‘Rid and Bid’ fundraiser. Killarney’s favourite read also promoted the presence of practice nurse Anna O’Donoghue free blood pressure checks at the event. Both events attracted a large attendance – in a socially distanced manner – and allowed HeartBeat Killarney to purchase a new AED.
“The Killarney Advertiser certainly helped to get people along to the event and we are all well pleased as we can now buy a portable AED as a result,” said HeartBeat’s Billy O’Sullivan. HeartBeat are planning a series of clinics and roadshow style events in the New Year. Most of the group’s volunteers are former cardiac patients and are at a high risk of heart failure. The purchase of the new portable AED will help keep volunteers safe while on these external events. “These events are in the pipeline once COVID eases,” added Billy. ”We will be able to carry this AED with us wherever we run an event.”

Rotary plants trees to enhance burial ground
An innovative community initiative has seen 30 young trees planted in the new Killarney Burial Ground to greatly enhance the extensive car parking area adjacent to the final resting place of loved ones. The Rotary Club of Killarney initiative is part of the worldwide organisation’s pledge to support the environment and the local club applied for, and was successful in, obtaining grant funding from the Community Support Scheme from Kerry County Council to fulfil the objective. The initial contact was established with outgoing Killarney Municipal District Officer Eileen O'Donoghue and the burial ground was chosen as a prime location for the planting as it has been identified as an area that needed attention in the most recent Tidy Towns report. A comprehensive plan identifying species and planting locations was drawn up by
tree expert Cormac Foley while horticulturist and founding member of the Rotary Club of Killarney, John Shanahan, was tasked with sourcing the trees. A total of 12 Silver Birch (Betula Pendula), 15 Rowan (Sorbus Aucuparia) and three Native Oak were planted at a ceremony on Wednesday while a Weeping Mulberry was selected to occupy pride of place in the meditation area adjacent to the Columbarium wall just inside the main walk of the graveyard. Killarney Rotary Club members were on hand to assist Kerry County Council foreman Noel O'Leary and Council landscaping staff with the completion of the project.
David Breen (26) died in a collision Chichester, England just over two weeks ago. He was funny, caring, ready with the banter, cheeky, lovable and always on the go. We met so many of his friends over the last week in England that showed so much compassion. Thank you to all at Sussex Police for all they have done for us. Thank you to everyone who has been there for us in Ireland since David’s accident.”
Farranfore road progresses as traffic counters installed | By Sean Moriarty Traffic counters have been placed on several roads in the Killarney area as part of selection process for the proposed new route to and from Farranfore. Kerry County Council has four route options under consideration for the new N22 and a new link road to Muckross. A Farranfore by-pass is also part of the proposed scheme. Earlier this week, traffic counters were placed in various approach roads to Kil-
larney. These include one in Brennan’s Glen, another on the Mallow Road, and one near Kerry Airport amongst other locations. The counters will be in place until the end of next week. “These counts are being carried out to inform the development of the N22 Farranfore to Killarney Project and are being undertaken both this week and next week,” a Kerry County Council spokesperson told the Killarney Advertiser. “The data obtained will be used to create the scheme traffic model which is a key model in the Project Appraisal process.”
National Park permit required for wedding photography | By Sean Moriarty Newly married couples will need to employ a photographer with a special permit if they wish to take photos of their wedding day within the confines of Killarney National Park. Mayor of Killarney Marie Moloney raised the issue at Wednesday’s Killarney Municipal District meeting.
She told the meeting that she had been approached by several couples who had been asked by Park Rangers to leave the Park as their photographer did not have the required permit. The National Parks and Wild Service (NPWS) says that all professional photographers need to have the permit for insurance reasons. “As has been the case for many years,
photography by the general public and amateur wildlife photography is permitted in the Park,” an NPWS spokesperson told the Killarney Advertiser. “All commercial events including professional photography, wedding promotional, fashion etc., is subject to a permit, which is readily and easily obtainable. The system simply requires the professional photographer to apply for a current permit. This has long been
the standard practice and is necessary for insurance/indemnification purposes.” Mayor Marie Moloney celebrated her wedding day 41 years ago with photographs in the Park. “This is ridiculous,” Cllr Moloney said. “The Park belongs to the people – photographers are being asked to leave, but I can take all the photos I want on my phone.”

New Community Nursing Unit to begin next July Construction of the town's new 130 bed Community Nursing Unit is set to begin next July and be completed within two years.

Virgin Media to support students’ awareness campaign
Killarney students are continuing their awareness campaign with the help of one of the country's top national broadcasters. With the help of Virgin Media Ireland, Killarney Community College students had an amazing opportunity to meet with representatives from the campaign production and management of Virgin Media Ireland to work on their next steps for their project to raise awareness about Autism, ADHD, Dyslexia and Dyspraxia. The nine Fifth Year students from The Connected Four YSI group Rachel Griffin, Luke O'Sullivan, Amy O'Donoghue, Keelyn O'Leary, Lulu Healy, Lauren Fleming, Jack O'Connell, Eva Ryan Lynch and Ekaterina Gaeva, won the overall Young Social Innovators Social Media Award and received Highly Commended for the Digital Innovators Award sponsored by Virgin Media back in May. Virgin Media since contacted teacher Lorraine Crowley and The Connected Four to offer support for the team to reach their goals going forward. The group have written a book and are developing an activity programme for primary school students and for use in other settings for example summer camps, etc. The students' main aim is to make learning about these conditions almost second nature and not just that, but for the children to have fun while they do it, by seeing the programme they will become more accepting of everyone without even realising it. The Connected Four want to prevent bullying and increase acceptance,
whether or not they get recognition, and see this as the best way to impact the youths in their local community and eventually nationwide, through this free, helpful and easily accessible, activity programme. Virgin Media want to give the students the resources and expertise to complete these initiatives. They have offered the Fifth Year students to take part in a Hackaton Event in January where they will partner with more representatives from the company to build on their ideas. Students have access to all areas and departments of Virgin Media Ireland to create their activity programme and continue their campaign. They have links with the Parents Council of Ireland and Department of Education to promote the students' activity programme. Virgin Media are also going to include The Connected Four in their monthly E-newsletter that goes out to 220k customers. "The Virgin Media team were so impressed with our amazing group of students, stating how eloquent and professional their presentation was and offered support from expertise and leaders from Virgin Media to achieve their goals," Lorraine Crowley said. "What an outstanding opportunity for this group of young people to get their word across the country. We are so proud of this group of young people making such a change in our community."
The project, which is part of a bundle of seven projects to be delivered by Public Private Partnership (PPP), will replace the existing facility for Older Persons in Killarney and will include both short stay and long term care beds. Independent TD Michael Healy-Rae had sought an update from the Minister for Health. In a Parliamentary Question he asked: "Minister, under the newly published National Development Plan, Killarney Community Nursing Unit is to receive funding for a residential care centre, can you confirm how much funding will be allocated to this and what is the time line for this project and if he will make a statement on the matter". Jim Curran, National Director Capital & Estates with the HSE replied: "The funding for the project is being provided by the PPP Consortium and will be repaid by the HSE by way of Unitary Payment during the 25 year concession period. The funding for these payments will be included in the HSE's

Capital Plan. The HSE are planning to replace the existing facility for Older Persons Killarney with a new 130 bed Community Nursing Unit. Construction is expected to commence in July 2022 and completed in 24 months." Danny Healy-Rae welcomed the news also. “I am delighted with this good news as I have been highlighting the need for this for many years.”
Plans for Kilcummin Sewerage Scheme move forward Irish Water and Kerry County Council continue to move forward with plans for Kilcummin Sewerage Scheme. The project has progressed to tender stage and the Compulsory Purchase Order (CPO) for the lands and wayleaves necessary to progress the works were published this week. When complete, the scheme will provide a new sewer collection system for Kilcummin village, that will ensure wastewater from the village is treated appropriately. Irish Water is working in partnership with Kerry County Council to develop this project. Once operational, the new sewerage scheme will connect into the sewer network in Killarney town, where it will be collected and transferred to Killarney wastewater treatment plant (WWTP) for appropriate treatment. The scheme will ensure compliance with wastewater discharge regulations. It will also improve water quality in the River Deenagh and Lough Leane and protect recreational waters for swimming, fishing, boating and sightseeing, as well as protecting the integrity of the local environment. The new wastewater infrastructure will enhance local amenities
and provide a platform for social and economic development. The new sewerage infrastructure to be constructed as part of this scheme will include a sewer network for Kilcummin village, a pumping station, and approximately 6kms of sewers. The scheme will reduce the reliance on on-site systems such as septic tanks and package treatment plants. Works on the project are expected to commence late in 2022, but the timeline for the commencement of works is subject to statutory approvals. “We are looking forward to delivering this important project on behalf of the local community in Kilcummin," David Shalloo, Wastewater Regional Delivery Lead with Irish Water, said. "All new infrastructure has been sized to accommodate future population growth and the project will enhance the local environment and provide a platform for social and economic development well into the future. We have moved the project forward as planned. We look forward to working with the local community to deliver this project in conjunction with our partners Kerry County Council.” Independent TD Michael Healy Rae welcomed the update on the project.

Kerry Hospice Foundation is in its third year of its pledge and are now in the early days of providing support for two nurse practitioners for Kerry in the future, she added. "The pledge is now in the region of €650,000 yearly to keep all the services within both units and the Home Care
services going. This would not be possible without the wonderful generosity of the public, our volunteers and all the businesses throughout the county that continue to support the Foundation."
VIRTUAL CHRISTMAS TREE Another way to support Kerry Hospice
Foundation this Christmas is via the virtual Light To Remember Christmas tree which is now in its fourth year. "It is a lovely way to remember so many of our loved ones who are no longer with us and to let someone special know you are thinking of them at this time of year." Go to www.lighttoremember.com and from there you can leave a public message for a loved one which can be seen in the live book or just sponsor a light on the tree without a name. All donations from the tree will again go to fund the Inpatient Unit, the Day Unit, the Home Care services and the two nurse practitioners. The Kerry Hospice Foundation Virtual Tree will be live right up to and during Christmas. "It is a lovely way to remember someone special while supporting such valuable services here in Kerry."

Flag raising marks new dawn for Kerry education Sewage pumped into Flags raised simultaneously across six campuses in the South West on Monday marked a new era for higher education. An Taoiseach Micheál Martin TD, Minister Simon Harris TD, and Minister Norma Foley TD, presided over the inaugural raising of the Munster Technological University (MTU). MTU has a student enrolment of more than 18,000 across six campuses and offers more than 140 programmes of study. “The first raising of the Munster Technological University (MTU) flag, on its six campuses across the South West, represents a new dawn for higher education in the country,” Professor Maggie Cusack, President of MTU, said.
SUCCESS
According to Professor Cusack, the establishment of MTU has been an unqualified success. She said that demand from CAO applicants has surged, with first-preference honours degree applications for MTU courses rising by more than 16%,
almost twice the national average, while first-preference degree application levels increased by almost 4%, a very positive outcome in a hugely important programme category. In addition, she said that the KTI Annual Knowledge Transfer Survey 2020 indicated that total research expenditure in MTU exceeded €22m, the highest total achieved across Ireland’s Technological Universities and Institutes of Technology. “The formation of the MTU is a very positive step for the joint communities of Cork and Kerry and is a huge boost for education within the South West region," Minister for Education, Norma Foley, TD, said. "I would like to wish Professor Maggie Cusack and all the staff and students at MTU the very best as they continue this tradition in providing excellence in education for communities across the country.”
lakes during heavy rains | By Sean Moriarty Sewage from the Killarney Urban District gets pumped into the lakes during heavy rains, a Kerry County Council official has confirmed. The official was responding to a motion raised by Cllr Donal Grady at Wednesday’s Killarney Municipal District meeting. Cllr Grady asked: “How much raw sewerage is going into our rivers and lakes and how much is being by-passed at our Waste Water Treatment Plant in heavy rain?” A council engineer stated that the practice of releasing sewage into a water network during heavy rain is a common engineering practice all over the world. “The sewer pipe network in Killarney is a combined system wherein the foul and storm water drainage is all collected in a common pipe,” he said.
“Occasionally, where there is heavy, sustained rainfall, the excess flow of waste water is designed to be released through outlets referred to as Storm Water Overflows. Storm Water Overflows act as emergency safety valves and release the excess flow from the sewer directly into local waters, such as rivers. These Storm Water Overflows are common practice and without these releases there could be a greater risk to the environment and people’s health because the sewer and treatment plant could become inundated, resulted in flooding in urban areas. These discharges from Storm Water Overflows are diluted by the coinciding rainwater.” He added that the level of dilution is so great during heavy rain that it does not pose any sort of health risk and that the water quality in Lough Leane in Killarney is extensively and comprehensively monitored on an ongoing basis.

New walkway to run through grounds of St Finan’s Hospital | By Sean Moriarty The future of the former St Finan’s Hospital site is taking small steps towards public occupancy following the announcement of two separate projects this week.

Celtic receive new kit
Killarney Celtic’s U17 players and management were this week delighted to accept their brand new custom kit from generous sponsor Mike O’Sullivan of MOS Masonary. Mike, whose son Kalvin plays for the team, has been a great supporter of the club for many years. The kit, a custom design from the Mi Adidas’s range, was given by club team wear supplier BMC Sports Letterkenny Co Donegal, on Tuesday evening. The kit itself is a departure from the traditional hooped jersey worn by the club although the traditional green and white
comes through very strong in the design. Club Vice Chair Paul Sherry thanked Mike O’Sullivan and said how grateful the club were for his support. The new kit will get its first outing tomorrow (Saturday) when the team travel to Clare to play Bridge Celtic in the FAI U17 Cup last 32 tie at Bridgetown, with kick off 2pm.
And while the two do not account for the future of the old hospital building itself, these projects are steps in the right direction. Late last week it was revealed that construction of the town's new 130 bed Community Nursing Unit is set to begin next July and be completed within two years. It will be built on the western side of the hospital grounds with access via Lewis Road near the entrance to Fitzgerald Stadium. A second project was also announced this week that will use additional space on the old hospital grounds. A new pedestrian and cycleway will be
built to link the Ballydribbeen housing estate with the town centre. This is part of a bigger plan to realign the Lewis Road/Bypass junction. A proposed underpass near Bridgefield estate was rejected by local residents who feared anti-social behaviour in the area. The new walkway will run through the grounds of St Finan’s and allow residents to access the town centre by linking it with one of the new cycleways at Lewis Road. The pathway was unveiled by Paul Curry of the Kerry National Road Design office at Wednesday’s meeting of Killarney Municipal District. “The new path will be built slightly to the west of the new hospital and to the east of the old one,” he told the meeting. “It will create a clear approach for pedestrians and cyclists into the town centre and to sports clubs like Legion and Celtic.” Full details of the plan will revealed in February or March next year.
Dr Crokes lose semi-final home advantage to a toss of a coin | By Sean Moriarty Dr Crokes fans will have to travel to Tralee on Sunday week for the Garvey’s Kerry Senior Football Championship semi-final after losing home advantage to a toss of a coin. Both semi-finals will be played at Austin Stack Park in Tralee. It was previously decided that the Austin Stacks v St Brendan’s tie would be played at the Tralee venue. Dr Crokes are due to face another Tralee side, Kerins O’Rahillys, in the other
semi-final and County Board officials decided the fairest way to select a venue was at the toss of a coin. It was announced yesterday evening (Thursday), just as the Killarney Advertiser was preparing to go to print, that the Tralee side had won the toss and the game is to be played in Tralee on November 20. Throw in for the Kerins O’Rahillys and Dr Crokes semi-final is set for 2.30pm while the second match between Austin Stacks and St Brendan’s will start at 5.30pm. The second match will be broadcast live on RTÉ.

Funding for local volunteer groups | By Sean Moriarty Seven community groups in the Killarney Municipal District will receive a total of €6,970 in funding under the Community Activities Fund. The funding, announced yesterday (Thursday), by Minister for Rural and Community Development, Heather
Humphreys TD, and Minister of State with responsibility for Community Development and Charities, Joe O’Brien TD, will see a total of €284,817 distributed nationally to support community groups impacted by COVID-19. Kerry Parents and Friends Association were the biggest winners locally. The Port Road-base charity will get €2,000 under the scheme with €1,000 of that
specifically earmarked to fund an Online Education Provision Team. The Ballydribeen Residents Association will also get €1,000, while Social Action Group Rathmore is in line to get €1,500. Other groups to benefit include Kilcummin Looking Good (€750); Killarney Men's Shed (€470); Killarney Water Rescue (€750), and Killarney Celtic
Football Club (€500). “This is badly needed funding for Community Groups whose income and fundraising ability has been severely affected by the COVID-19 crisis,” said Brendan Griffin TD. “This will support groups, particularly in disadvantaged areas, with their running costs such as utility or insurance bills, as well as with improvements to their facilities." Beaufort Community Care Group, which is in the Kenmare Municipal District, will get €500 under the scheme.

Inaugural Rhododendron conference is first in Ireland The inaugural Rhododendron Conference on Friday, brought together landowners, farmers, community groups, individuals and environmentalists who have an interest in controlling and eradicating this invasive plant from the landscape. Hosted by Kerry Biosphere at the Brehon Hotel, it was a well attended event with many concerned individuals from all parts of the country present. Rhododendron ponticum is a plant that originated in The Black Sea region of modern day Turkey called Pontus, hence the name ponticum. It was imported into Ireland and planted in Victorian Gardens by landlords of the time, and cherished for its rich showy floral displays of mauve each summer. It was also valued as cover for game which was important on many Victorian Estates as hunting was a popular pastime. This plant escaped these gardens and became established in the wild from around 1894. Since that time it has been encroaching on native flora and fauna and displacing all other plants and animals eventually. "I was impressed by the interest and range of speakers at this the first Rhododendron Conference in Ireland and the first one to be hosted by The Kerry Biosphere," Diarmaid Griffin, Green Party LEA Representative who attended the conference, said. "I have known about this invasive plant for many years but this conference is a milestone in the battle as it brought together all interested parties to share information and find a solution to this widespread problem." MC on the day was Aisling O'Brien from Radio Kerry who presents Agritime with the station. Malcolm Noonan, Minister of Heritage spoke first and outlined his full commitment to the ongoing eradication
programme and pledged funding for this in the NPWS budget. Kerry Biosphere Officer Eleanor Turner spoke and gave a background to her work on promoting the conservation goals of this UNESCO designated site. Other speakers included Dr Therese Higgins of MTU who gave a comprehensive talk on the problem plant. Patricia Deane of the Macgillycuddy Reeks European Innovation Partnership Project outlined her work with hill farmers on improving the biodiversity and nature value of upland areas in Kerry. "Hill farmers in Kerry are doing great work with Tricia Deane in maintaining the biodiversity of our precious uplands. Not everyone might know how much these people are contributing to our environment and they deserve recognition and support. I hope this project continues long into the future," she said. Flor McCarthy, a local hill farmer, spoke very well on his experience of the EIP Project. Like many hill farmers, he has an infestation of Rhododendron ponticum on his land and is one hundred percent behind its removal as it not only affects nature, but is also toxic to grazing sheep. Seamie Hassettt spoke in the afternoon on the history of Killarney National Park's battle with the alien plant and new plans for the future. His talk was followed by a short film about The Killarney Mountain Meitheal and the great work they have done in removing Rhododendron from Killarney National Park.
At the one-day conference about active management of the invasive Rhododendron Ponticum were speakers from left: Claire Tangney (MTU Student and Volunteer), Padraig O'Donoghue (Meitheal Volunteer Group), Ger McEnery (Development Officer Reeks Forum, South Kerry Development Partnership), and Sabine Graill (MTU Student). Train hard and recover fast with Killarney’s Reboot Recovery Suite It’s Killarney’s only dedicated sports recovery suite and it’s set to launch tomorrow (Saturday, November 13). Chris Davies, Killarney Advertiser Development Manager has partnered with local businessman Cormac Casey, Killarney Advertiser and KC Print on this new venture. Chris is delighted to finally get the doors to Reboot Recovery Suite open and he is very happy with the result. “The project kicked off as far back as April. Here we are months later, and we are just about ready to open the doors. As anyone who has set up a new business would know, there was always going to be a few roadblocks along the way, but the final product was worth it. It was important to do it right in these COVID times and we wanted to create a space that is both comfortable
and welcoming, and I think we have achieved that,” Chris said. Reboot Recovery Suite is fitted out to a high standard and boasts market leading recovery equipment. “It was important to source the best recovery equipment. Our cold-water immersion CryoSpa is employed by the likes of AC Milan, Bayern Munich, Brooklyn Nets, Manchester United, even US tennis champion Emma Raducanu was pictured using the spa earlier in the year. Other equipment such as our NormaTec Compression Boots have been endorsed by NBA stars LeBron James and Kevin Durant,” Chris added. The goal was to create a space for
sports and fitness enthusiasts to meet and recharge after high intensity training and competitions. Chris continued, “Killarney has a huge sporting community. From soccer and GAA, athletics, rugby, cycling, combat sport with many more in the mix and you have a lot of people who are interested in maintaining and getting the best out of their body. We also have some of the best gyms in Ireland right on our doorstep and there is no doubt all their members take training and recovery seriously. Reboot Recovery Suite is a place where all people can come to reduce the risk of injury and help them perform to their maximum potential. Even for people who don’t play sport, our recovery suite is beneficial for those who suffer with muscle and joint soreness, fatigue or those just looking to unwind after a long walk or
hike in the park.” Chris believes that sport, even at amateur level, is taken much more seriously nowadays, and a service like this is needed in Killarney. “I remember when I was in school, lads would be snacking on a chocolate bar and sipping away on a bottle of Coke at 11am in the morning. Now 16 and 17-year-olds are carrying around 2 litre bottles of water and hitting the gym at lunch. Young people are better educated on how to train and recover now so I believe there is an appetite for a dedicated recovery suite like Reboot.” Reboot are currently running a competition over on their Instagram account @rebootrecoverysuite where they are giving away one full year’s membership to the lucky winner. Head over for more details on how to enter.

Advice - By Keegan Longueira Keegan is available for advice and fitness consultations, at info@activate.ie • www.activate.ie
Challenge and failure leads to growth I've recently had some thoughts around "challenges" and working hard at something. When someone asks for help, I love this because firstly, it acknowledges that they can't do something they want to do and they realise it requires work and guidance to get there. I was lucky enough to have a massive background in sport from Rugby back in South Africa. The first time I ever bench pressed I was 14-years-old, and we had strength and conditioning programmes in all our sports teams. So when I made a move to CrossFit when I was 24, I was able to do a lot of the fundamental movements. Squat, deadlift, pull-ups, the list could go on. When I started coaching, I realised that many people didn't have a background in these things and that is okay, if not great, because they hadn't picked up any of the bad habits I had. However, I realised the lack of confidence in trying new things and the patience to go through the weeks and months and sometimes years required to get there. It's a mix of patience and confidence, I think. Instagram has its role to play in that; we see models and influencers lifting incredible amounts of weight and making some remarkable gymnastic moves on bars. Seeing this, we tend to give up before even giving ourselves a chance to get stronger. We live in a time where natural ability and the result is celebrated way more than the hours of practice and patience. It leads to a stagnation of progress in strength, the way our bodies look and the
way we grow emotionally. We want to skip the steps to get somewhere and are so scared to fail that we don't even try. Here are a couple of steps to implement in your training if you would like to get that first strict pull-up, a bar muscle-up, get bigger shoulders or just generally move better and be healthier. • Don't look at not being able to do something as a failure but rather an opportunity to learn • Keep the carrot in front of the cart, challenge yourself just beyond your ability and not too far. Don't attempt something major if you haven't taken the natural next step • Give yourself time. Nothing short of 12 weeks in our sports would see lasting and meaningful changes and adaptations in the body, so try to stick to something for at least 12 weeks consistently, even if that is 15 V ups every night before bed. • Do it because you can, not because you have to. Learning a new skill as an adult is incredibly rewarding; it challenges your mind and keeps you feeling fit and young. People doing their first double under and wall walks this week just highlighted that for me • Forget the scoreboard. First on the leader board means nothing if you didn't challenge yourself. I'm not saying you should overreach for the sake of making it difficult, but I am saying once in a while a challenge is a great thing! Let’s celebrate trying over winning. Effort over talent and lastly learning over losing. Have a great week and see you in the gym.
Passport Applications Question: I noticed recently that my Passport will expire shortly. Are passport applications being processed at the moment? ANSWER: Yes, the passport office is currently processing passport applications. Passport Online is open to all applicants. The Passport Service is continuing to process Passport Online applications as a priority. Applying online is the fastest way of getting your passport. You can track the progress of your passport online. In general, adult renewals when all the information on your passport is the same as your previous passport are processed within 10 working days. The processing of Passport Express applications resumed on July 19, 2021 but these paper applications take significantly longer for most applicants. The estimated turnaround time is eight weeks but this is not a service guarantee and you should not book flights until you have your passport. It is important to note that if you have already submitted a paper application, you cannot apply online. In the case of an emergency situation such as the death or serious illness of an immediate family member, or for emergency medical treatment of the applicant, you should contact the Passport Service’s Customer Service Hub. Further information will be requested by the Passport Service including verifiable proof of emergency. Updates on services and the latest turnaround times are available on the Passport Service's website www.dfa. ie/passports/ Q. My partner is applying for a Passport for the first time. Can this be done online? A. Passport Online is open to all applicants. However, it is important to note that first time applications are complex and require additional time to process. This is because the Passport Office have to verify all documents submitted and to ensure the identity of the applicant. These applications can take up to 40 working days to process. Q. Can I apply for my passport in person at the Passport Office?
A. It is not recommended to apply directly to the Passport Office for your first passport. The counter service in the Passport Office is designed to accommodate people who need to renew their passports urgently, and don’t have enough time to apply in other ways. You can make your first-time applications using the counter service, but it cannot be processed urgently – it will take at least 20 working days (not including postage times). Applications made in person are more expensive than applying online or through Passport Express. Q. How much does it cost to apply for a passport? Standard 10-year, 34-page passport Passport Online - €75 (+ €5 postage if you live outside Ireland) Passport Express - €80 (+€9.50 fee) In person - €95 Large 10-year 66-page passport Passport Online – €105 (+ €5 postage if you live outside Ireland) Passport Express - €110 (+€9.50 fee) In person – €125 An Post also offers a 'Family Application' option where up to four passport applications can be enclosed in one envelope. Time has flown, and when you look back, we have done so much that we’re super proud of,” Edwards said. “It’s going to be great to have all our big hits as a band on one album for the first time, celebrating 10 massive years of Little Mix. The tracks also show how much we have grown as artists, from ‘Wings’ to ‘Heartbreak Anthem’,” added Thirlwall.

Loughquittane pupils learn the importance of helping others It was an exciting week for the pupils of Loughquittane National School as they learned the importance of helping others less fortunate.
COLLECTING: Staff from the Killarney Advertiser, Chris Davies, Grigoriy Geniyevskiy and Leszek Szeligowski, hit the road on Monday to collect hundreds of shoeboxes as part of this year’s Team Hope Shoebox Appeal.
The children were delighted to again this year participate in the annual Team Hope Shoebox Appeal.
"We filled nearly 70 shoeboxes with treats, toys and presents for children who are less fortunate than ourselves," Sixth Class Teacher, John O'Donoghue, said. "It serves as a great reminder of global citizenship, that we all share the same world and that by random circumstance of birth, some are less well off than we are."
Killarney Advertiser staff collect hundreds of shoeboxes Children receiving gifts through the Team Hope Shoebox Appeal will be thrilled on Christmas morning thanks to the generous nature of Kerry people. | By Michelle Crean Hundreds of shoeboxes packed with gifts for children across the world were squeezed into the Killarney Advertiser's van this week - ready to be shipped abroad - and to put a smile on their faces. In recent weeks the Killarney Advertiser office on High Street has been the designated drop off point coordinated by the Killarney Advertiser's Business Development Manager Chris Davies. The response has been phenomenal with boxes coming every hour of the day since. And it doesn't stop there as the date for the shoebox appeal has been extended, and there's plans for another collection by our staff to go out again next week. “It’s great to have the shoebox appeal
back up and running again this year and people have really got behind it once more," Chris said. "We could hardly close the back door on the Killarney Advertiser van when we left Cahersiveen Monday evening and we will be out again next week collecting from some of the locals schools. Just to let people know, although the official deadline for the collection was supposed to be Monday, November 8, we will continue to take shoeboxes up until November 19 at the Killarney Advertiser office on High Street, so there is still time to get your box in. Thank you to all the volunteers for the great work they are doing in the checking centre the past two weeks getting the boxes ready for the children in Africa, and also to everyone who has donated so far."

Popular Christmas fundraiser launched Irish humanitarian aid agency GOAL has launched this year’s hugely popular Christmas fundraiser, the GOAL Mile, for people across Ireland and abroad. The annual event sees people across the country gather over the Christmas holidays to run, jog or walk a mile in support of vulnerable communities across 14 countries where GOAL works in Africa, the Middle East and Latin America. Started first in 1977, this year’s GOAL Mile is supported by AIB in the first of an exciting new three year partnership, announced just last month. This year marks the first time that both in-person and virtual GOAL Miles are taking place following the move online due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Prior to the pandemic, over 170 GOAL Miles were organised across Ireland, with approximately 50,000 people raising over €250,000 in 2019. GOAL’s Director of Fundraising and Marketing, Eamon Sharkey, sees the option of physical or virtual GOAL Miles as an opportunity to connect even more people with their communities, the Irish diaspora and GOAL’s work this Christmas. “We are so excited to re-connect with people in-person this Christmas. For many people, it will have been two years since they were last with family, friends and neighbours, and we hope the GOAL

Mile can play a part in bringing people together as we come out of such a challenging period,” he said. “Of course, there are many people around the world who still can’t be at home or take part in physical events this Christmas. That is why we are delighted to also be encouraging virtual GOAL Miles once again. Last year people from every corner of the world took part to make it a truly global event, and we would love to see that become a part of the longstanding tradition of the GOAL Mile.” GOAL CEO Siobhan Walsh hopes to reach more communities throughout Ireland
and across the globe with the GOAL Mile. “Hundreds of communities across Ireland already know and love the GOAL Mile,” she said. “They show incredible compassion for communities in need across the world that this event supports. GOAL helped more than 14 million people in Africa, the Middle East and Latin America last year. We could not have achieved this without the continued support of the Irish people.” To register for your local GOAL Mile or to arrange one at a new location, please visit www.goalmile.org.
Colin and Donna Craig-Brown were weeding their garden near Hamilton, New Zealand, when they discovered something strange beneath the surface of the soil. The size of the object surprised the couple as they began to excavate it. Colin realised it was a giant potato after tasting a piece. Colin told CNN affiliate Radio New Zealand that it was truly one of nature's pleasant shocks. The couple further said that they had no idea it was growing there or how long it had been there. The couple named the unique potato 'Doug'. British vegetable gardener Peter Glazebrook holds the current record, with a potato weighing 4.98kg reported in 2011, while the Craig-Browns' potato is almost 8kg. According to CNN, the couple is awaiting word from the Guinness Book of World Records as Doug is kept in the freezer, where it will remain for the time being.
Pfizer unveils new antiviral pill Pfizer has confirmed that the company could have its new wonderpill ready in just months if it is approved soon. Pfizer's UK Manager Ben Osborn unveiled trial results showing that the pill had been shown to cut the risk of hospitalisation or death from the virus by 89%. Their experimental COVID-19 antiviral pill was developed to prevent the replication of SARS-CoV-2 and protect people from developing severe Coronavirus. Pfizer say the pill has shown extraordinary efficacy in the first data from a large
Phase 2/3 clinical trial. “We are now working at a real pace with regulators around the world and in particular in the UK with the MHRA (Medicines and Healthcare products Regulatory Agency)," Mr Osborn said. “We expect the filing in the coming weeks, and subject to their approval we may see this medicine being available very early in 2022.” Infectious disease experts interviewed by Reuters were equally enthusiastic about the prospect of effective new treatments for COVID-19, however agreed that they were no substitute for
vaccines. Even in the face of the highly transmissible Delta variant of the virus, the vaccines from Pfizer/BioNTech remain effective, cutting the risk of hospitalisation by a combined 86.8%, according to a Government study of US veterans. Choosing not to get vaccinated "would be a tragic mistake", said Albert Bourla, chief executive officer of Pfizer Inc. "These are treatments. This is for the unfortunate who will get sick. This should not be a reason not to protect yourself and to put yourself, your household and society in danger."

Tree trend goes viral Instagram is seeking to clarify one of its features after a viral trend claimed that a tree will be planted for every pet photo uploaded to the social network.
214m year-old dinosaur discovered in Greenland The first species of dinosaur that lived on Greenland 214 million years ago has been discovered. Named 'Cold Bone' by scientists, the animal, known in Inuit as Issi Saaneq, is a medium-sized herbivore with a long neck that pre-dates sauropods like Brachiosaurus, one of the world's largest land animals. The first dinosaur remains, two well-preserved skulls, were discovered in 1994, but it was unclear whether they belonged to an entirely new species at the time. It was discovered by an international team of researchers from Portugal, Denmark and Germany, including the Martin Luther University Halle-Wittenberg (MLU). "At the time, the Earth was experiencing climate changes that enabled the first plant-eating dinosaurs to reach Europe and beyond," explained Professor Lars
Clemmensen from the University of Copenhagen. The team performed a micro-CT scan of the bones, which enabled them to create digital 3D models of the internal structures and the bones still covered by sediment. "The anatomy of the two skulls is unique in many respects, for example in the shape and proportions of the bones. These specimens certainly belong to a new species," lead author Victor Beccari, who carried out the analyses at NOVA University Lisbon, said. The plant-eating dinosaur Issi Saaneq lived around 214 million years ago during the Late Triassic Period. It was at this time that the supercontinent Pangaea broke apart and the Atlantic Ocean began forming. Once the scientific work is completed, the fossils will be transferred to the Natural History Museum of Denmark.
The Add Yours sticker, created on November 8 and used over four million times in their Stories feature, says it'll "plant one tree for every pet picture". After some misunderstanding about the trend's origins, an account called 'Plant A Tree Co' claimed ownership saying that they made the sticker as "a fun tree-planting campaign where we can show off our awesome pets". However, more than four million users have since used it and the page said it quickly realised it "does not have the resources" to fulfil the promise. "We immediately realised the post would grow too big and that we didn’t
have the resources to plant that many trees, so we deleted it 10 minutes later," said Plant A Tree Co in a statement on the platform. "Even though we deleted it, the stories continued to spread out of our control. Our credit for the post was also removed, because of what seems like an Instagram bug.” The company then later said it is taking part in a fundraiser for 'Trees For The Future'. "We want to use this awareness for lasting impact, so we created this fundraiser. Please share this post and the fundraiser on your story, and tag all your friends, celebrities, and Instagram so they can see this and so we can ACTUALLY plant 4 million trees." The fundraiser has raised more than €14,000 so far.
SpaceX astronauts return to earth After a 200-day space station mission, four astronauts have returned to Earth. They landed safely back on Earth as their SpaceX Crew Dragon capsule parachuted into the Gulf of Mexico off the coast of Pensacola, Florida. After spending more than six months on board the International Space Station (ISS), they were rescued from the ocean by a ship just eight hours after leaving the International Space Station. NASA astronauts Megan McArthur and Shane Kimbrough, Akihiko Hoshide of Japan and Frenchman Thomas Pesquet from the European Space Agency, were then taken out of the capsule and placed on stretchers as a precautionary measure. "It's great to be back to Planet Earth,"
Mr Kimbrough was heard saying on the NASA live broadcast after Dragon splashed down. The ISS activities of the Crew-2 astronauts included documenting the surface of the Earth to record human-caused changes and natural events, growing Hatch chile peppers, and studying worms to better understand human health changes in space. "Proud to have represented France once again in space! Next stop, the Moon?" Mr Pesquet tweeted ahead of the trip home. Bad weather and a "minor medical issue" pushed back the departure of the next set of astronauts, on the Crew-3 mission. Until the departure, the ISS will be crewed by only three astronauts - two Russians and one American.

New Toyota Aygo X coming to Kellihers Kelliher’s Toyota is inviting motorists to put their name on a waiting list to test drive the all-new Aygo X Crossover SUV. It will arrive in the county’s only Toyota dealer early next year and the Traleebased garage will be one of the first in the country to get it. “This is a world launch for Toyota,” dealer principal, Tim Kelliher, told the Killarney Advertiser. “This is the biggest smallest SUV available.” The all new Aygo is a wholly-designed Toyota product after the Japanese manufacturer moved away from previous collaboration with Peugeot and Citroen. It is bigger, taller and longer than the previous model but will only come with a 1.0 litre petrol engine – an unusual move for such cars as they are usually
fitted with larger engines. “The Aygo X is designed to meet the demands of everyday modern life and has been Toyota’s most accessible car in Europe delighting customers with its youthful and fun character,” added Mr Kelliher. “Whether in the city or on open roads, the Toyota Aygo car stands out by being compact and agile in order to communicate confidence to the driver. Hoping to revolutionise this already popular car, Toyota has created a vehicle that not only showcases style but also integrates the best technological advances in a compact package that’s economical to run.” Any customers who are keen to get in early on the Aygo X can register interest today at Kellihers Toyota, Tralee on 066 7120000 – your one and only for Toyota in the Kingdom.

The $21 billion Twitter poll
falling from $588 to $260 a share in just over a year. Even though Zoom's financial results continued to impress through much of 2021, growth is starting to slow, and the collapse of the proposed acquisition of Five9 has hampered the company's attempt to diversify revenue. While Zoom's demise might sound strange, given the work-from-home environment many of us still find ourselves in, when markets fully price in all future growth potential, it only takes a little nudge in the other direction to trigger enormous moves.
Markets are officially on a roll, with the S&P 500 and the Nasdaq notching multiple record-high closes in recent weeks. Much of the recent uptrend following a difficult September has been driven by a solid Q3 earning season. The S&P 500 has rallied 9% in recent weeks as 82% of companies within the index beat earnings estimates, well above the 69%, 15-year average. As we move forward, the comp figures will become more difficult to beat, but unwavering demand looks set to support earnings into the future.
INFLATION SCARE
In news that will hardly be surprising to anyone who has stepped foot inside a grocery store over the last six months, inflation across a broad swath of products that consumers buy every day hit its highest point in more than 30 years. The October consumer price index figures, which monitor a basket of products ranging from petrol and healthcare to groceries and rents, rose 6.2% from
a year ago. While much of this recent inflation is thought to be transitory, given current supply constraints, these higher-than-expected figures put inflation and the need for tighter monetary policy firmly back on the radar.
MUSK'S TWITTER MACHINE
Tesla stock fell almost 20% in two days after Elon Musk indicated he would sell 10% of his stake in the company off the back of a Twitter poll. If he does, it will trigger what would surely be one of the largest capital gains tax liabilities for an individual in history — a cool $6.7 billion. In true Musk fashion, he took to Twitter on Saturday and proposed selling 10% of his Tesla stock, worth roughly $21 billion. The masses voted in favour of the sale with a 58% majority. While Musk framed to poll as a response to the democrat's proposal to

tax unrealised stock gains of US billionaires, looking to cash out during seemingly overbought conditions is hardly surprising. Tesla's Market Cap jumped over $200 billion off the back of a $4 billion Hertz contract announcement that has yet to be signed, hard to argue with the idea of banking some gains.
ZOOM'S RISE AND FALL
Zoom's precipitous decline continued, finishing the week down 6.2%. After peaking in October 2020, Zoom has lost roughly 55% of its market value,
Zoom serves as a reminder that while the stock market valuations continue to steadily increase at an index level, if you zoom out..(pun intended)...substantial volatility remains at the stock level. Stocks like Peloton, Zillow and Moderna cratered last week as the indexes steadily climbed to all-time highs. The Nasdaq composite index is up over 24% year-to-date, but if you look a little closer, 50% of the companies within the index have experienced a 20% correction at some point during the year, while 20% of the companies within the index have experienced a 50% correction or more. Volatility is alive and well, but an index-driven market makes it appear like everything just keeps going up.
Used car values and your insurance policy According to some recent surveys used car values have increased substantially over the past two years.
John Healy of Healy Insurances.
A survey from Cartell.ie, an automotive data supplier, showed the average second hand car is worth 16% more now than last year. A second survey completed by DoneDeal confirmed used car prices are nearly 50% higher than they were before the pandemic in January 2020. The analysis from DoneDeal, in conjunction with Trinity College and NUI Galway, found that in the three months to June, used car prices have increased by 10.6%. Not only that, but the research
indicates that prices are still increasing and the rate appears to be speeding up.
WHAT IS DRIVING THIS INCREASE?
It is a combination of factors including Brexit and the trade issues that have been created as well as the continuing supply chain challenges brought about by the pandemic. In addition, lead in times for delivery of new vehicles have been extended primarily due to a global shortage of micro-
chips. There has also been a huge decrease in imported vehicles from the UK since Brexit and this is certainly adding to the price inflation. From an insurance perspective most insurers operate on a pre-accident value format in the event of a claim. The pre-accident value is calculated by the assessor based upon market trends and so should take into account the current spike in prices. However, some insurers use the vehicle value when rating the policy. It is advisable to review the vehicle value in advance of your renewal date and update it if necessary.

Suspicions raised about Local Property Tax valuations By the time of publication the Local Property Tax (LPT) deadline will have come and gone. The date for filing submissions was extended to Wednesday (November 10) at 5pm. It has been reported that the LPT helpline received in excess on 80,000 calls in the past three days alone (at the time of writing) and that in excess of one million properties have thus far been filed, with 93% being done online. It is expected a further 800,000 properties will be filed before the deadline. Reports this week suggest that some suspicions have been raised about valuations being submitted for the self assessed tax. This comes after it emerged that one-third of homeowners who had
submitted a valuation by the end of last week said their home is worth less than €200,000. Revenue have indicated it will not investigate further where it is believed a homeowner has made an honest assessment. However, homeowners will have to provide documentary proof to back up their Local Property Tax valuations if Revenue suspects a property’s value has been dishonestly lowered. Statistics from Revenue show 31% of
property owners had submitted a valuation by the end of last week of under €200,000. They will face an annual LPT bill of €90. The figures show most homeowners who have valued their homes opted for the two lowest valuation bands; 21% told tax officials their property is worth less than €262,500. This means more than half of property owners who have so far submitted a valuation will pay less than €225 a year. The large number of homes that have been valued under €262,500 has raised eyebrows. Revenue have confirmed that where a property owner has made an honest

estimate, and can provide supporting documentation, they will not seek to overturn a valuation. “However, where the valuation cannot be supported, Revenue will engage with the property owner to agree a revised valuation.”

Gardening - By Debby Looney

Bring the outdoors in with flower arranging Outside is not really my favourite place to be when the winter arrives. I could say I am beginning to feel my age, but if I’m being honest, I am definitely a fair weather gardener! That is not to say I don’t feel the need to have plants around me! Apart from houseplants, another great way to bring the outdoors in is flower arrangements. Over the years, this hobby has broadened my knowledge of plants, flowers, and artistry. Colour combinations and shapes can be done on a small scale - a bowl for example, – and copied on a much larger scale in the garden. I find this especially with colour schemes. For gardeners it is also a relatively cheap hobby. If greenery is varied and plentiful, you can create beautifully intricate arrangements with a minimum of flowers. However, varied foliage can be a study in texture. Or, alternatively, silk/artificial flowers can be combined with real greenery to great effect. There are some ideal plants to grow if you feel this might be an appealing hobby – if not, the following plants will add variety to the winter garden! Choisya ternata, also known as Mexican orange blossom, has shiny fresh green leaves in groups of three, with a gorgeous scent. There is a golden version available called Sundance, but the green variety is a stronger plant. They like semi-shade and grow to about one metre. Helleborus, or Christmas rose, is a low growing plant which has large dark green three lobed leaves. This beautiful perennial will flower mid-winter, adding cheer even before snowdrops make an appearance. Pittosporum ‘Silver Queen’, a large shrub with small silvery leaves and dark, almost black, bark. ‘Tom Thumb’ is a dwarf variety with small
burgundy leaves. Its new growth is bright green which contrasts beautifully with the deep burgundy foliage. ‘Golfball' has smaller leaves, silvery, and keeps to a small dome shaped plant. Pieris japonica is a great plant for flower arranging. Its leaves grow in whorls with a good space between each group. They cover a lot in an arrangement! The flowers are also excellent for lasting. ‘Forest Flame’ is probably best known for its bright pink new foliage but there are many varieties to choose from. ‘Christmas Cheer’ flowers at Christmas time and ‘Little heath’ is a dwarf variety. ‘Valentine’ flowers red in February and is surprisingly hardy. Viburnum tinus, harryanum and davidii are all great foliage plants. Viburnums, both evergreen and deciduous are among my favourite plants. They are hardy, trouble free and happy plants, which almost all do well in any kind of soil. Corylus contorta, or the corkscrew hazel, is a deciduous plant but its stems are twisted and grow in fantastic shapes. There are catkins in the spring, to which some people are allergic. However, the stems are ideal instead of a Christmas tree to hang baubles from, or at Easter for an Easter tree. Ozothamnus ‘Sussex Silver' is an ideal plant in exposed or seaside areas. It has long stems, and an evergreen, silvery foliage reminiscent of heather. If cut back hard each year, it remains fresh and bright. It is a super plant for adding height to floral arrangements and colour to the garden. Fatsia japonica, also known as Aralia, has large five lobed leaves. ‘Spider’s web’ has white mottling in the leaves. These are grown as houseplants in many regions, but we are lucky to be able to grow them in a sheltered spot.

SIMPLY BEAUTIFUL Supporting students
Beauty - By Jill O'Donoghue
Jill is available for advice and beauty consultations, at Killarney Toning & Beauty Studio. Call 064 6632966
Time to prepare for the festive season With less than six weeks to Christmas, it's time to get organised. Presents must be purchased and wrapped, but more importantly have you booked your nails, brows and waxing appointments yet? I'd highly advise you start booking as I have never seen so many people so super organised. With being locked down for so long people really are looking forward to Christmas this year. It might be their first time out meeting people in a long time so you really want to look your best and more importantly - feel your best. A bit of pampering can be so relaxing and balancing, and just what you need - but don't leave it until the last minute as appointments are filling up fast. This year so far eyelash lifting is the number one sought after treatment and a patch test is required. It works on lifting the natural lashes and is suitable for all ages. It includes tinting to darken the lighter hairs which gives a real pop to the eyes. Eyebrow lamination is number two at the moment and works extremely well
on older ladies' brows which might have lightened during the hormonal changes through the menopause. The treatment itself helps to straighten the hair and lift and sculpt them into position. It includes tinting also. The Gelish two-week manicure is a fantastic way to have your nails done for both Santa and the New Year. Some clients start in early December with their first set and by the week before Christmas get the second set so they have a bit of length. With party nights out we will have to put on the make-up again, and it always goes on better with fresh skin. Book a detox facial in November and your skin will thank you for it. It will help peel off the layers of dead cells with salicylic acid, detox the peptides, and gives the deepest hydration with hyaluronic acid to promote anti-ageing and collagen production. Your make-up will glide on and you will be glowing for all the family snaps. • To book in for your Christmas appointments, call Jill on 064 6632966.
through the decision making process
Supporting a young person who is making career decisions can be daunting for parents and guardians. To begin with, the pressure of the Leaving Cert year is often felt by the household, not just the student themselves. Words of encouragement from you as parent or guardian, are often misinterpreted as extra pressure to achieve high grades. It is absolutely natural to want our young people to realise their potential at the end of their journey in secondary school but it is important to remember that lots of students don’t flourish in the Leaving Cert. Many do so when they find the pathway that they really like which suits their style of learning and facilitates them to develop skills and competencies that go far beyond the scope of the Leaving Cert exam. Parents and guardians have a huge influence on a young person’s career path so taking time to discuss their ideas about what they are interested in is hugely valuable. By approaching the discussion in a friendly and encouraging way you take on the role of a career coach which means you can become the sounding board as they go through the process of making a decision. It is a process that can take some time so try to be as patient as possible as they explore different ideas. Often this can mean switching direction several times but that is all part of the stage that they are at. It is also really important to be as open as possible to the many different pathways now available to school leavers and to encourage your teenager to explore all avenues open to them. Listen to all their ideas without judgement but don’t be afraid to probe them on what it is they like about a particular course or option. Always encourage them to dig deeper!
DOING THE RESEARCH
Lots has changed since parents/guardians of the current cohort of young people left school so it is very understandable for you to feel inadequate to be able to guide them, but there is lots of help available. The first point of call is the school Guidance Counsellor. Encourage your son/ daughter to make an appointment with their guidance counsellor and prepare questions with them in advance of the meeting. Attend any information sessions/career events held by the school even if you have gone through the process before with an older sibling. Each child is individual and lots of changes are taking place in the landscape of apprenticeships, and further and higher

education, so make sure you are well informed. You can also do this by attending the virtual open days hosted by colleges or taking your son/daughter to the on-campus events where they are happening. Such events generally host an information session specifically aimed at parents to cover the move to college, finance, accommodation, access routes such as HEAR (Higher Education Access Route) and DARE (Disability Access Route to Education) and so on. I recommend that you explore the websites such as www.careersportal.ie, www.qualifax. ie, www.cao.ie, www.fetchcourses.ie, www.apprenticeships.ie, www.classroomguidance.ie, www.accesscollege.ie, and www.susi.ie, all of which have lots of information and resources.
WEBINAR
Parents and guardians are very important role models for young people making career decisions so discuss your own career journey with them, what helped or hindered you from making decisions when you were younger. It will help them to know that this is a process that everyone goes through, that you have been there too and that you understand that making a decision is stressful. It may also help to remind them that they are not deciding what they want to do for the rest of their lives, they are just planning the next step! I will be hosting a free webinar for parents in association with the Education Centre Tralee on Tuesday next (November 16) at 7pm, ‘How to help your son/daughter make effective choices after the Leaving Cert’. To register see, www.edcentretralee.ie.

Lakers make long-awaited return to Killarney home | By Adam Moynihan
• Scotts Lakers are back in Killarney Sports & Leisure Centre | • Coach Jarlath Lee calls on home fans to turn up and be loud The National League season is in full swing by this stage but from a Killarney perspective, something has been missing. With the Killarney Sports & Leisure Centre being used as a vaccination facility, the Lakers have been without a proper home for the first month of the campaign. Their two “home” fixtures to date have been staged 25km away in Castleisland. Both matches have ended in defeat. All that will change this Saturday night as the St Paul’s senior team make their long-awaited return to the venue known locally as the Aura, or the Auracle (a nod to the Golden State Warriors’ Oracle
Arena, traditionally one of the loudest venues in the NBA). The Aura has seen some incredible nights since the Lakers returned to top-level basketball in 2017. Now, after a long layoff due to the pandemic, the club are hoping that supporters will return in their droves to see a new-look team that is packed with young, local talent. Imports Ben Miller (Canada), Emilian Grudov (Bulgaria) and Rui Saravia (Portugal) will lead the way alongside Killarney men Mark O’Shea and Paul Clarke, but the rest of the squad is comprised of talented teenagers like Jamie O’Sul-

Scotts Lakers v UCC Demons Saturday at 7.30pm Killarney Sports & Leisure Centre
livan and Senan O’Leary. Standing in their way this weekend are the UCC Demons, an imposing side who have won their opening four league games in convincing fashion. The Cork outfit also made light work of Ulster University in the first round of the President’s Cup with Tala Fam Thiam and American Andre Kennedy splitting 50 points in a 88-61 win. It will certainly be a tough match-up for a Lakers team still finding their feet but
head coach Jarlath Lee believes that last weekend’s 94-59 victory over WIT has given them a timely lift. "We needed the confidence boost,” Lee admitted after the Lakers picked up their first win in four attempts. “We should have won our first game but complacency creeped in. I’m delighted that we never let that happen tonight. “Ben Miller displayed great leadership and decision-making, especially in the second half. Senan O’Leary showed why I have him as a starter at the age of 17 by scoring 16 points, and Jamie O Sullivan, another teenager, had 20 points. "We’re building for the future and we are taking the right steps. It won’t happen overnight, but it will happen. Daniel Carroll was on the scoresheet again with four points, but I was mainly impressed with his defence. Mark Sheehan is always positive, always ready. A great kid to be a part of any team. “But we will get back to work on Monday night and focus on Demons. It’s a home game so we'd really love a big crowd and loud fans to help us." The club have reminded supporters that season and patron tickets are now available from any club officer.

Killarney take down RCD in tight affair MUNSTER U16 LEAGUE _________________________________________________________________________
Killarney RFC 8 | Rugbaí Chorca Dhuibhne 5 AGHADOE
In a low-scoring match in Aghadoe on Saturday, Killarney overcame Rugbaí Chorca Dhuibhne – and the elements - in their final home game in the first stage of the Munster U16 League. Both teams came into this fixture in excellent form having won their first three matches of the season. Tight early exchanges were a sign of things to come as scores proved very hard to come by. Killarney started very well defensively despite playing into strong wind and rain, but they were unlucky to lose captain Scott Carlton to injury after just six minutes. The hosts battled hard under sustained pressure from RCD but they held their nerve to reach half-time without conceding. As they were unable to break the deadlock themselves, the half-time score was tied at zero. The men from Dingle put up a strong defence of their own in the second half, making Killarney dig deep. The deadlock was finally broken when Shane O’Sullivan slotted a penalty to nudge Killarney into a 3-0 lead. The home team began to feel as though they might just be getting the edge as they created space to attack wide left of Dingle’s defence, but conditions and the intensity of the defence led to a knock-on. As the match reached its conclusion, neither side had flinched. Matters were
eventually decided in the final five minutes. Killarney managed to get a foothold within the opposition 22 to make a crucial assault on the Dingle line. The clinching score they so desperately sought all day arrived when they found an overlap wide on the right and Dara Stack breached the defence to touch down on the line. The try wasn’t converted but Killarney now had a two-score lead. The heavy lifting was done. Rugbaí Chorca Dhuibhne kept battling and they cut the deficit with a try of their own in the closing moments, but it was too little too late. The teams will see each other again soon: they will meet in the semi-final of the West Munster Cup later in the season. Next up for Killarney is the visit to Killorglin/Iveragh this weekend. They then face Abbeyfeale/Listowel away on the weekend of November 20/21.
KILLARNEY: Mark Kennelly, Cian Russell, Shane O’Sullivan, Scott Carlton (captain), Jack Donoghue, Bryan Walsh, Dara Stack, Adam Lynch-Herlihy, Alex Courtney-Sheehan, Dylan O’Brien, Kris O’Leary-Sacristan, Ciarán Doyle, Gearóid O’Connor, Connie Counihan, Tomás Chambers, Ronan Bennett, Pierce Leslie, Jake Leahy, Senan Cotter, Sam Dennehy and Tomás Swords.
We are currently looking for a female sports columnist to complement our existing sports section. The role would be flexible but it would involve writing one article preferably an opinion piece - on a fortnightly basis at first. Being a current or former player from any sport would be an advantage, as would being based in the Killarney/Kerry area. “We’re constantly exploring ways of improving our sports section and we believe that adding a female voice would be a really positive move,” said Killarney Advertiser sports editor Adam Moynihan. “We have a small team of sports contributors at the moment and, as is often the
case in the world of sports media, it is currently male-dominated. It’s important to be as diverse as possible and if we can find the right candidate to come in and add to what we’re already doing, it can only be a good thing. “Women’s sport is finally beginning to get the respect and coverage it deserves. It would be great to be able to give a local sportswoman the platform to share her opinions on whatever stories she is passionate about.” If you have an interest in writing/media work and you think you fit the bill, contact Adam via sport@killarneyadvertiser. ie for more information. No experience necessary - you will get plenty of assistance along the way.

Historic Rally to be launched on Sunday
Killarney and District Motor Club will launch the Rentokil Initial Killarney Historic Rally on Sunday. The November 27 event has already attracted a massive entry including World Rally Championship stars Craig Breen and Paul Nagle who will compete in the event in a BMW M3. Sunday’s launch event will take place at 3pm at the Gleneagle Hotel and the event is open to the public. “We look forward to welcoming you for an afternoon of chat and preview what is anticipated to be a great event,” said event PRO Ivan Hurley. | Fourth place finish for
O’Donoghue at winter rally
Colin O’Donoghue was the best placed Killarney and District Motor Club driver on Sunday’s Banna Beach Resort Kerry Winter Rally near Tralee.
The Ford Escort driver finished fourth overall. He was running as high as third but clutch problems over the final two stages relegated him to fourth. Rob Duggan ran his newly built Ford Escort Mk2 for the first time on Sunday. He was up to third overall before brake and exhaust problems forced him and his co-driver Ger Conway on to the retirements list. Cousins Aidan and Shane Buckley from Rockfield, Faha were the highest placed Killarney and District Motor Club crew on the Kerry Winter Rally. They finished 14th overall and third in class 13 in their Ford Escort. Shane made the trip from his London base especially for the event. “We were only out as a warm-up for the Historic rally in a few weeks,” Shane said. “The car went okay and I feel the cobwebs are blown off, so it was a successful weekend. Well done to all involved in running the rally.”

Tralee teams will fancy their chances in final four Eamonn Fitzgerald reports on the Kerry SFC quarter-finals as the county’s premier football competition begins to take shape Now it is down to four teams left standing in the Kerry SFC after last weekend’s quarter-finals, three clubs and one district board side. Going forward to the semi-finals on the weekend of November 20/21 are Austin Stacks, Dr Crokes, Kerins O’Rahillys and St Brendan’s Board. Out went South Kerry, Templenoe, Dingle and Legion. The semi-final pairings are St Brendan’s v Austin Stacks and Dr Crokes v Kerins O’Rahillys. The two Tralee teams will fancy their chances of making it an all-Tralee
final and the battle for bragging rights for the great town rivals. However, St Brendan’s and Dr Crokes will be bidding to scupper those ambitions. Last weekend’s double bills both on Saturday and Sunday proved very successful for the Kerry County Board and for the fans starved of real live action for much of the past two years. Unfortunately, all four winners won easily and the lack of real opposition left little championship bite in the games. Not that it will bother the semi-finalists. Job
done, now for the semi-finals. The structure of the championship this year suits the teams, the fans, Jack O’Connor and the new Kerry management team. Have they seen any new prospects to deliver the Sam Maguire, not seen in this county since 2014? More specifically have they seen a solid full back, an even more solid centre-back and another option of a midfielder to partner Diarmuid O’Connor? The jury is still out on that aspiration. By December 5 they should be capable of drawing up the new Kerry football panel. The current championship is the shop window for any aspiring panellists. More
about that in the future. Now for a look back on last weekend’s games. |
Austin Stacks 0-14 South Kerry 0-6
After their heroics in knocking out the three-in–a-row-seeking East Kerry team, Stacks were installed as favourites by the bookies and one can see why. They are still favourites to draw level with Dr Crokes as kingpins of Kerry football. They are extremely fit and can gallop all over the field for 60 minutes, and they do it with purpose. With the reliable Wayne Guthrie in goal - not that he spends too much time on the goal line - their defence is secure and very dis-

12.11.2021 ciplined, rarely committing a foul. The Kerry team needs to learn that particular ploy. Stacks break en masse on turnovers, usually by-pass midfield, deliver quickly up field and still keep travelling forward. On Sunday how many times did we see their two corner backs up in good positions to score? Midfield is also strong with Joe O’Connor catching the eye. They applied this gameplan from the very start and it was noticeable that Kieran Donaghy did not position himself in front to the Lewis Road goal but hung on to the extremities of the terrace side line. This created acres of space down the middle and left the full back, Waterville’s Frank Clifford, in a pucker. Should he stay at home or move out sideways on Star? Stacks didn’t score the goal they planned for but were content to kick six points in the opening period with Darragh O’Brien most prominent and not the expected Shane O’Callaghan. South Kerry didn’t get near scoring until Jack Daly kicked a point, even though the umpires deemed it wide. Éanna O’Connor, Jack’s son, pointed two frees and they were lucky to be only nine points to three adrift at half-time. South Kerry received a double blow and were down to 13 men at one stage following a black card for Niall O’Shea and two yellow cards to the influential Robert Wharton at midfield. Hamstring trouble for Kerry player Graham O’Sullivan compounded their difficulties when he had to retire. This defender was huge loss and one expected Stacks to run up a huge score. Fair dues to South Kerry, they were at their best in adversity. Mark Griffin, the former Kerry player, showed the way with surging runs and South Kerry cut the deficit to four points, 0-10 to 0-6. They lacked accuracy in the attack and really Stacks should have been out of sight. Shane O’Callaghan and Jack O’Shea missed goal chances, but one must credit Pádraig O’Sullivan, the South Kerry keeper, for depriving the Rockies. Top scorer for the winners was Darragh O’Brien on eight points, six from frees. For South Kerry, Éanna O’Connor scored three points, all from frees. Stacks will improve further in their bid for the ultimate success. |
Dr Crokes 1-22 Templemore 0-6
Dr Crokes had a point to prove on home territory, seeking revenge for a fivepoint defeat away to Templenoe in the Club Championship. This was the opportunity to up their game, winning by 19 points and going into their sixth consecutive semi-final. It was a very convincing win for Crokes. They hit such a high tally and the margin could have been much greater only for splendid goalkeeping by the Templenoe net-

minder Mark Looney. Crokes were always going to win this game as Templenoe really missed their top scorer, Killian Spillane. To confound their problems further they lost Teddy Doyle and Stephen O’Sullivan through injuries in the first quarter. This is a small rural club, fielding three Kerry senior players, and they didn’t have the supply or the quality on the bench to mount any real challenge to Dr Crokes. Shane Murphy excelled in sending long kickouts beyond midfield and short ones when they were warranted. Fionn Fitzgerald and Gavin White anchored the central defensive plank. Johnny Buckley and Mark O’Shea dominated midfield and the forwards ran up that huge score. Veterans Buckley, Kieran O’Leary and Brian Looney showed all the skills and craft that has garnered them several Kerry SFC titles. Their understanding of each other’s play was a delight to behold. Instinctively, each one knows where to be for that deft pass and a clinical score. Linking up with Buckley, Brian Looney kicked five glorious points in that second half. Looney played his first Kerry SFC match in 2005 and has been an automatic starter for all of their championship games for the past 16 years. He leads the way in the county in terms of appearances, well ahead of Kieran Donaghy’s 61 appearances. He has been Crokes’ most reliable player. Mr Consistency. In the opening minutes, Gavin White went on his customary searing run up to the Dalton’s Avenue end to open the scoring, and then they tacked on further points to lead by 0-8 to 0-2 by the first water break. By half-time the result was never in doubt as Tony Brosnan was fouled in the square and fired home the resultant penalty. More of the same in the second half as Templenoe tried their best to
keep out the torrent but Crokes had a half-time cushion of 1-10 to 0-5. Crokes were able to run the bench and Jordan Kiely impressed scoring two points and only splendid goalkeeping by Mark Looney deprived him of a goal. He also prevented Micheál Burns and Mikey Casey from rattling the net in a spectacular display of goalkeeping. A big win for Crokes, but plenty to work on to improve their performance in the semi-final versus Rahillys. |
St Brendan’s Legion
1-17 1-9
A blistering start by St Brendan’s which yielded 1-3 to no score in just nine minutes left Legion with a mountain to climb. The divisional side has been their nemesis for the past few years, while the winners will wonder if they can break their three-year semi-final hoodoo. The Brendan’s full forward line in particular dominated the opening period. Alan O’Donoghue, James Duggan and goalscorer Dan Goggin did most of the early damage for the divisional team with Kerry pair Diarmuid O’Connor and Jack Barry prominent. In defence, the Barry brothers did well. Darragh Lyne got Legion on the scoreboard with a point in the 10th minute and they welcomed the first water break to plot a revival, trailing 1-5 to 0-1. Cian Gammell was black carded in the 23rd minute and Brendan’s piled on the attacks. They led at half time 1-9 to 0-2. Legion’s best period was at the start of the second half, bagging a goal via Pádraig Lucey. The same player got the determining score of a goal against Spa which set them on the road to victory in the first round. Legion mounted several attacks and the experienced James O’Donoghue nailed four points from frees. All of a sudden, Legion were right back in the game. Brendan’s responded to the challenge
and added the points, especially when Legion lost Kieran Slattery, their best defender, who was black-carded late in the game. In fairness to Legion they kept plugging away, but they could make no impression on a rampant St Brendan’s side who won 1-17 to 1-9. |
Kerins O’Rahillys Dingle
2-16 0-13
Kerins O’Rahillys are going great guns and ramping up high scores with Tommy Walsh and Jack Savage in splendid scoring form. They proved far too good for Dingle who were fortunate to snatch a late goal to oust Mid Kerry in the opening round. Rahillys were hugely impressive and they dominated early on but Dingle came back, powered by Kerry star Paul Geaney, to tie the sides in the 36th minute. Then Strand Road exploded with a barrage of scores, hitting 2-7 by the 54th minute. The Tralee side put the issue out of the reach of struggling Dingle. Dingle finished well by scoring four points, but the gap was too great to bridge as Kerins O’Rahillys marched confidently into the semi-final. Rahillys were strong in defence and had a free-scoring full forward line. Tommy Walsh lorded the exchanges at number 14, playing the role of an assisting scorer, gaining possession and offloading to the impressive Conor Hayes (1-2) and Barry John Keane (0-3). Keane delivered the pass for Gavin O’Brien to score Rahillys other goal. Dingle rued the loss of key defender Mikey Geaney who injured his knee early on and they were too dependent on Paul Geaney who scored seven points, four of these from frees. So that’s it as Stacks go into the semi-final as outright favourites, but St Brendan’s, Kerins O’Rahillys and Dr Crokes will also fancy their chances.

No ref, no party Of all the side hustles that exist, reffing amateur sport must be one of the strangest. I don’t know about you (maybe my ego is too big) but standing in a muddy field while several people verbally abuse me isn’t exactly my idea of #sundayvibes. But a game needs a referee more than any other individual. If a player, coach, or fan doesn’t show up, the show goes on. Where would we be if the refs, having been told to ‘f- off’ by countless people on a weekly basis, actually did just that? This week, players, coaches and parents in the North Dublin Schoolboys/ Girls League and the Metropolitan Girls League have found out exactly what happens when the refs say, “no more”. Fed up with the level of verbal abuse directed their way during matches, officials have withdrawn their services for this weekend’s fixtures. At least 550 games have been postponed. “This is a sad day for football and I hope we will learn from what is happening this weekend,” the leagues’ honorary secretary and CEO Tony Gains told clubs via an official communique. “[Last] weekend a female referee refereeing her first game of three games was abused so badly from the time she entered the pitch, she decided that she is not taking any more of this abuse from these people and she has now decided to give up refereeing entirely. “Another young referee who has only been refereeing for the past two months was petrified on the pitch, he was so afraid even to collect his gear. This abuse he took was absolutely disgraceful.” You have to feel for the officials. They’re certainly not getting paid enough to put up with this kind of thing. No one is.
LOSERS
The biggest losers here are the young players who are missing out on what is probably the highlight of their week. Well, actually, they’re the second biggest losers here, after the grown adults

For some reason, perfectly respectable members of the community find it acceptable to lay into referees, coaches and players at a match. who are harassing match officials at a children’s soccer match. Sadly, reports of shameful abuse at juvenile sporting events are commonplace in Ireland. For some reason, perfectly respectable members of the community find it acceptable to lay into referees, coaches and players at a game. I think that’s a key word: ‘acceptable’. There seems to be this acceptable level of abuse in some of our favourite sports. It’s basically fine to swear at a referee in soccer and Gaelic games. Rugby, it must be noted, is much different in this regard. My own experience with the sport is limited to a semester-long spell with a college team in New York but the manner in which the referees were treated was truly remarkable. It’s all “sir” this and “thank you” that. In my first match, I took a quick tapand-go that was destined to result in the first and only try of my ill-fated rugby career. I was streaking through unchallenged, happy but slightly conflicted as I recalled that rookie try-scorers had to run naked through the sports fields after their debut. Sadly for me (and luckily for the students who were ambling around the State University of New York campus that autumn Sunday), the referee
called play back. I had supposedly taken the penalty from the wrong spot. It was harsh and I was sickened. If it was soccer or football, I absolutely would have told the referee how I felt. But it just isn’t done in rugby, so I bit my tongue and got on with it. That’s the culture and, even though I was only involved in the sport briefly, I automatically bought into it.
EDUCATION
Sometimes it is the less educated (in sporting terms) parents and fans who lose the run of themselves at matches. Maybe a poor understanding of the game is a factor here; every refereeing decision is potentially wrong when you don’t know the rules. Other parents, and this is true of a lot of supporters in general, go after the ref out of a misplaced sense of loyalty. To many, the referee is not only not neutral, he’s actually one of “them”. A duplicitous secret agent in cahoots with the enemy. Every club has their “give him a jersey!” brigade. If that’s your attitude from the throw-in, abuse is almost inevitable. And some parents and fans just can’t keep their emotions under control. Call it over-exuberance or being too passionate or being over-protective of their child or clubmate, whatever it is it can frequently lead to outbursts that

they might well regret once the dust settles and the red mist clears. Coaches regularly blow a gasket too. While it’s not necessarily forgivable, especially if it leads to a referee getting abused, this is a little more understandable, especially at senior level. Managers and selectors are under a lot of pressure to get results and when a decision goes against them it can decide their whole year, and ultimately impact their reputations. People say there’s no point giving out to a ref. He’s not going to change his mind. That’s not why players and managers shout at referees. Firstly, they’re trying to influence the next decision, not the last one. It’s an attempt to guilttrip the official into favouring them the next time he might be unsure of the correct course of action. Of course, this is often counterproductive. Why should the ref give you a break when you were abusing him from a height a matter of seconds ago? Secondly, and I know this myself from whenever I give out to a ref, it’s often because the player has made a mistake him/herself. If I’ve been turned over, or I’ve lazily drifted offside, that’s when I’m most likely to have a cut off the ref. It’s deflecting, pure and simple. You’re annoyed with your own error but you can’t exactly verbally abuse yourself, can you? Fellas will be talking. On more than one occasion I’ve witnessed a teammate absolutely tearing into the ref over some decision or other, and then swear blind in the dressing room that he was wronged. And we all sit there nodding our heads, despite knowing full well that it was the right call, and the teammate just messed up. Sometimes by drawing attention to the referee, managers are also deflecting from their own shortcomings and the shortcomings of their team. Losing the plot over a stoppage time decision communicates to supporters that the ref is after screwing us here. “Sure what

There’s no hard and fast solution to this blight on our games but the culture is wrong in the GAA and soccer and there’s no getting away from that. can we do when we’re playing against 16?” And look, sometimes the anger is actually justified. Referees make mistakes, and that can be very annoying. Does that warrant verbal abuse, or physical intimidation as was the case in Dublin recently? Absolutely not. It’s possible to communicate to a ref that you think he has made a mistake without questioning his intelligence, eyesight or integrity. The odd time alright you come across a ref who won’t listen to anyone, and that irritates me more than anything. It’s a bit like the bouncer who treats everyone like a potential troublemaker, despite the fact that most of us are just there to have a good time, bro. I suppose it’s a defence mechanism. If you’re getting abused on such a regular basis, maybe it’s easier to assume that everyone is going to be a problem. In my experience, the best referees have very open lines of communication with the players. They explain every decision clearly and you can explain your side (respectfully) without getting a dismissive response. It’s a lot harder to lash someone who has been sound to you all day, even if he has just given a dodgy last-minute penalty to the opposition. There’s no hard and fast solution to this blight on our games but the culture is wrong in the GAA and soccer and there’s no getting away from that. The Silent Sidelines initiative in the GAA is a fantastic idea and coaches say it works well. I would love to see the GAA adopting it wholesale, and the FAI too for that matter. As for senior level, I think there needs to be a more zero-tolerance approach to verbal abuse – red cards and suspensions – and also accountability within the teams themselves. We might sometimes view refs as the spoilsports but it’s pretty straightforward: no referee, no party.

With the wind at our backs we pushed on and scored another goal when Brían O’Shea let fly from 25 yards and found the bottom corner to put us two up. We got the third goal when Fionn Daly drove at the Murroe defence, beat a couple of defenders and drilled the ball low into the net to put us three up.

12.11.2021 SPORT NOTES our sellers. O DONOGHUE CUP QUARTER-FINAL: Kilcummin 0–10 Glenflesk 0–10 (Glenflesk win 4–3 on penalties). An historic day in Kilcummin, as penalties were needed to decide this battle of attrition between Glenflesk and Kilcummin in the quarter final of the O’Donoghue Cup. Last minute equalizers and a red card were also part of a drama filled game. As darkness took over the evening, the crowd shifted down towards the end where the penalties would be taken. Those present knew they were about to see something momentous. Glenflesk were successful with four of their five efforts. Kilcummin scored with three of theirs. Kelliher’s great save being the difference. Huge credit to the players on both sides for stepping up to the spot, and putting their teams hopes on their shoulders. It was Glenflesk’s day, after a match where the quality at times wasn’t the best, but the fight not to get beat till the bitter end was most definitely on show.
