The family of a little girl diagnosed with a rare form of cancer have this week thanked the community - including those in Killarney where her mom worked - for raising a staggering €20,000 in just six days. | By Michelle Crean A GoFundMe was set up by a Killarney man for Lorraine and Dodi Sebestova, whose seven-year-old daughter Lily (Lil) was diagnosed with a cancerous tumour on her hand, called an Alveolar Rhabdomyosarcoma, just days after her seventh birthday in July. Colleague and friend, Jason Clifford, who is a Manager at the Dunloe Hotel, worked with Lorraine for the past 15 years and immediately set up the fundraising page to help the couple who gave up their jobs to be at Lil's side. On Wednesday evening

FUNDRAISER: €20k has been raised to help Lorraine and Dodi Sebestova, whose seven-year-old daughter Lil was diagnosed with a cancerous tumour on her hand.

Lil finished the first round of treatment which left her exhausted, after three weeks of intensive tests. In total she has to undergo 25 weeks of chemotherapy and radiotherapy between Crumlin Hospital and St Luke's in Dublin. The couple, living in Spa Road in Tralee, also have four other children and

Lorraine told the Killarney Advertiser that the money raised will be a lifeline for them as costs with travel and accommodation will add up. Her parents say little Lil is staying strong and positive but has put down some bad days. "She's doing very well," Lorraine said.

Killarney’s Olympic hero arrives home | By Sean Moriarty

"We get glimmers of her when she's not so beaten down. She's never been in hospital before and is a happy go lucky child. She has been going since she could walk at 10 months so when you put her in a small room her personality changes." But she added that their "little warrior is putting up a good fight". "It's rare, it [the cancer] occurs on the extremities. It's in her thumb and palm and spreading to her ring finger. She's had so many procedures already and has been through the most horrific battle. She is just the best. She is so scared all the time but pushes through it, she is so tough. She is a warrior and made for battle." Lorraine added that she cannot thank the communities in Killarney and Tralee, her close knit neighbours, and colleagues in the Dunloe Hotel, for the massive support to help get them through this. "We have four other kids at home that my mom is minding. We both gave up our jobs as we want to do this together. We're a great family and we're strong. We'd be lost without our neighbours and the communities. Jason set up the GoFundMe, which we are grateful for and the generosity has been overwhelming. So many people are dropping in stuff to us including petrol vouchers. It has been unbelievable." Jason added that Lorraine is a "vibrant and positive person", and had no hesitation setting up the page to help. "She is just one of those girls everyone clicks with. I just wanted to do something. We think the most of her here."

Mayor calls to support Jordan Lee’s Tokyo efforts

Olympian David Kenny - who made his Olympic 20km race walk debut in Toyko last week - is already setting his sights on a better result in Paris in three years’ time.

Mayor of Killarney Marie Moloney is calling on the people of the town and county to get behind Paralympian Jordan Lee.

The 22-year-old from Rusheen, Firies exceeded all expectations by coming in 29th place overall but he has already turned his focus to the next Olympics in 2024 where he hopes to move even further up the ranks. “Qualifying for Paris is almost a given,” he told the Killarney Advertiser. “The people around me expect more, Sport Ireland, my training group, and to be honest, I agree with them.” David arrived home to Firies on Wednesday night. He shared the long-haul flight from Tokyo to Dublin with Olympic gold medallist Kellie Harrington and the rest of Team Ireland. While Harrington was whisked away for an open-top bus tour of her native inner city north Dublin, the rest of the

Lee is one of just eight competitors to make the Irish Track and Field team for the Tokyo Paralympics which gets underway on August 24. The high-jumper’s selection was only confirmed on Monday. He joins Firies race-walker David Kenny and Killorglin rowers Aileen Crowley and Monica Dukarska, as Team Ireland athletes for the Tokyo Games. “The whole town and county needs to get behind Jordan,” she told the Killarney Advertiser. “We are all very proud of him and will be following his progress with great interest.” Jordan, and his coach Thomas Griffin, prepared for Tokyo at the newly opened Killarney Valley Athletic Club Arena on New Road. team quietly went their own ways – an unwelcome side effect of pandemic restrictions. As a result of those restrictions the Tokyo games lacked the usual hype associated with the Olympics and David believed this helped him perform better in the race. “There was no hype around the [Olympic] village, that helped me concentrate

on my race," he added. “Other lads were telling me this was not the same as other Olympics, but I had no knowledge of what the other games were like.” He was also full of praise for the enthusiastic Japanese fans. “The Japanese were great, they lined the whole route, both sides of the road, for my race,” he said.

No drama until go ahead from Government | By Michelle Crean A well-known local performing arts teacher - who says there's no clear guidance or roadmap for reopening in line with other businesses and industries - is to join a national day of action on Monday.

FIRE: The fire left the house gutted (left) and Pat O'Neill pictured with son Finn.

Pat thankful no one hurt in house fire A much loved Killarney hairdresser - whose house was destroyed following a devastating fire - has thanked the public for their support. | By Michelle Crean Still recovering from the shock, Pat O'Neill also issued a warning to homeowners to check their contents insurance - as he and his wife Geraldine have been left with a big bill as they repair the damage including ceilings which caved in. Fire crews rushed to the scene in Ballaugh during the daytime on Thursday, July 29 after his 12-year-old son Finn ran to the neighbours barefoot for help with the family's two dogs. "I was at work and Finn was at home lying on the carpet on his iPad when he saw smoke. He ran out barefoot and alerted the neighbours. Geraldine had gone to collect our son Luke who is working in Scotts for the summer," Pat told the Killarney Advertiser. "The kitchen is gone, everything inside has to be thrown out." The den area was also totally destroyed

including ceilings and it could take up to nine months before they can return to live there. He said that it all happened so fast but is "thankful" no one was hurt. In the meantime, he, Geraldine and their children, Finn, Lara (14) and Luke (16) are staying in a nearby home owned by one of their neighbours. "We did get a fright but there's always someone worse off than you." He issued a word of advice to homeowners to have their insurance up to date. "We're under insured. You take it out years ago and it comes about every year and rolls over. For an extra €45 or so, the price of a meal, is all it costs. It could have been a lot worse." However he said some things are irreplaceable including oil paintings of his father and his football memorabilia. He also thanked his neighbours for their quick action and the fire crews for their help.

Lily MacMonagle, who runs The MACademy, a musical community for children, will be one of many, including her own dance, singing and drama teachers, from the sector to protest outside Cork Opera House at 11am. The event 'Curtin Up' is organised by Performing Arts Educators of Ireland (PAEI) and a second event takes place in Dublin at the same time, as they say they are fed up the the Government's inaction in relation to the resumption of indoor dance, drama, and music classes under safe protocols. She says that come next month the sector will have been closed for 18 months at a personal cost to businesses up and down the country. Lily, who ran a number of outdoor summer camps, says the indoor closure has had a huge impact on children and young adults in their Arts training, resulting in a detrimental effect on their mental health, confidence, and social skills. "In the last 17 months we've not been given a date or any guidance for operating indoors," Lily told the Killarney Advertiser. She said that the Performing Arts sector has been largely ignored in published guidelines, financial supports and roadmaps for reopening. "We are calling on the government to listen to us, acknowledge our sector and engage with us to allow our students return to classes. "I ran summer camps outdoors, and the amount of stress I had checking the weather everyday wondering if I

have to cancel. I bought all of our own covers, I'd say I spent €600 on them. We're left in the dark." Professionals in the industry such as Saoirse Ronan, Colin Farrell, Killian Donnelly, Kerry man Tom Vaughan Lawlor, Rebecca Storm, Charlene McKenna, Aoibhinn McGinnity, and Norma Sheahan have already lent their support to the campaign with video clips and sound bites, with other celebrities coming on board daily, she added, saying the importance of this campaign should not be underestimated. She added that a lot of industries have been allowed resume under safe protocols and that they can too. "We managed the summer camps, we can manage indoors in a safe manner."

Feast on 'Ireland's Best Hotel Burger'! | By Michelle Crean A delicious mouthwatering feast created by one local hotel has just been named 'Best Hotel Burger in Ireland'! On Wednesday, staff at Hotel Killarney were over the moon to learn zia a Zoom ceremony presented by TV personality Brian Dowling, that they had been named one of the best in the country, as fast-food joints, family owned-pubs, hotels, and speciality burger restaurants all sought an accolade. Head Chef at Hotel Killarney, John Byrne, had his work

cut out as he was up against some stiff competition but his skills proved they couldn't be beaten as the winning announcement, part of National Burger Day yesterday (Thursday), was made. It's Kepak’s fourth annual National Burger Day which encouraged customers to get out and have their say by voting for their favourite burger, while also showing some much-needed support for local food outlets and operators as they emerge from recent pandemic related closures. "We at Hotel Killarney are absolutely thrilled to have won 'Best Hotel Burger in Ireland'," Louise Daly, Social Media Coordinator with Hotel Killarney,

told the Killarney Advertiser. "We knew we were up against some stiff competition. It is a credit to our Head Chef John Byrne and his team for the hard work and passion they literally bring to our guest's dining tables every day. We would like to thank all of our staff and guests who got behind us to vote for Hotel Killarney. We look forward to serving many more burgers in the future!" For every burger purchased and a photo shared online with the hashtag #nationalburgerday, a meal was donated to Simon Communities across the country, with over 14,000 meals donated in 2020 as part of the campaign.

Bird’s funfair say thanks to the people of Killarney

Mróz Exclusive opened to the general public at Park Place on Wednesday but the official opening will take place tomorrow (Saturday), where a day of family fun, including an outdoor barbecue, is planned by staff. Mróz – the Polish word for frost or coolness – already operates three stores in Dublin, but this is the first branch outside the capital.

A truck will arrive twice a week from Poland to deliver a large range of Eastern European foods but fresh meats and vegetables will be sourced locally. “It will be mostly Polish food for now, but the Irish people can come too and will love our stuff,” Manager Bartek Świgoda told the Killarney Advertiser. “On Saturday we will have attractions and open with a big boom!” A draw will run until the end of September – each receipt for over €50 will be entered in a raffle for amazing prizes like a 65 inch smart television, an electric scooter, a coffee machine and more. Mróz Exclusive is open from 9am to 8pm seven days a week.

Bird’s Euroshow Funfair has thanked the people Killarney for their support during the funfair’s annual visit to Killarney. | By Sean Moriarty The travelling funfair took up its usual position in the Fair Hill car park on July 3. It marked the return of the funfair to Killarney after the pandemic forced its cancellation last year which brought an end to an unbroken 83 years run in the town. The family funfair returned this year under strict COVID-19 rules and without the large numbers of people usually associated with Killarney summer events like the 4th of July Festival and the Ring of Kerry Cycle. “We were delighted with the feedback and welcome we got this summer and

we thank the people of Killarney for this,” Don Bird, grandson of founder of William Bird, told the Killarney Advertiser. The funfair left Killarney on Saturday last. It will operate in Killorglin until Sunday, taking up its traditional Puck Fair slot. On Monday next (August 16) the funfair will move to Tralee and operate in the Brandon Car Park. The Rose of Tralee International Festival should be taking place next weekend in the county town but has been cancelled for the second year in a row.

60 miles challenge to benefit life-saving service | By Michelle Crean Next month will see a well-known Rathmore man hitting the local roads in a bid to clock up miles to help keep a life-saving service in the air.

ORCHESTRA: Local musicians Seán Kelliher and Conor Moriarty are behind setting up the new Kingdom Trad Orchestra.

Local musicians launch traditional Irish music orchestra

Michael O'Mahony, better known to most as PRO for both the East Kerry GAA and Rathmore Community Council, is taking part in 60 Miles for Missions for the Irish Community Air Ambulance (ICAA), a service he says is invaluable to rural communities. Michael himself was behind setting up a similar air ambulance many years ago with a group of Kerry people but unfortunately after talks with the then Minister for Health James Reilly, it never took off. More recently he knew of local rescues and it reiterated the importance of the service across the country but more so

for Kerry. "An air ambulance for Kerry is very important especially for rural areas where an ambulance can't get to," Michael told the Killarney Advertiser. Relying completely on public donations, the ICRR was in danger of being grounded in more recent times. "I think it's very important and the Government should be funding some part of the service. Funding is mainly down to the community." The fundraiser Michael is taking on will include walking two to three miles a day to fulfil his 60 mile goal in September. Since setting up his fundraising page on Facebook at the weekend he has already hit his €300 target. However, now he's hoping people will continuing donating whatever they can. "If they haven't funding they can't run the air ambulance. It would be an awful loss to the community," Michael said. "All donations are greatly appreciated."

Two Killarney musicians are behind a new project to create a traditional Irish music orchestra in Kerry. | By Sean Moriarty Conor Moriarty from Kilcummin, graduated with a masters in traditional Irish music performance from the University of Limerick. He is a former All-Ireland champion at Fleadh Cheoil na hÉireann on melodeon in 2009 and on button accordion the following year. He and fellow UL graduate Seán Kelliher from Fossa, are behind a plan to create the orchestra. In 2013, Seán won gold at the All-Ireland Fleadh in Derry. In 2016, he was awarded the Micheál Ó hEidhin medallion at Comhaltas headquarters in Dublin after getting four distinctions in his Senior examinations. They will begin a 15-week rehearsal programme at Siamsa Tíre in Tralee on September 4 and they are calling on young

musicians to get in touch with them. “Kingdom Trad Orchestra is a new initiative to get musicians from Kerry and the surrounding areas to come together and perform as an orchestral ensemble. The orchestra will focus on arrangement within traditional Irish music along with new compositions, with the aim of bringing the orchestra to perform in a state-of-the-art theatre at the end of the term,” Conor explained to the Killarney Advertiser. Starting on September 4, they will run a two-hour class in Tralee, one each for U12s from 10am to 12pm and a Youth Orchestra from 1pm to 3pm. Interested applicants should send a two-minute video or audio clip to kingdomtradorchestra@gmail.com or via WhatsApp to 087 969 8063.

Synge out loud as musical comes to Muckross House Acting royalty takes centre stage in the lead up to Heritage Week as ‘The Playboy of the Western World – The Musical’ comes to Muckross House. An outdoor performance under a marquee with a capacity of one hundred plus per night, takes place between August 19 and 21 with legendary actress Kate O’Toole, daughter of the late British stage and film actor Peter O'Toole, taking on the role of narrator. This mischievous, musical adaptation of Synge's classic is being presented outdoors under canvas, in the style of a 1950s theatrical fit-up. Joining Kate will be 15 other actors and musicians for this reworking of Synge’s classic play which is set in a radio studio in 1959 during a live broadcast, with the cast, dubbed the Atlantic Broadcasting Corporation, playing actors performing 'The Playboy of The Western World' as a radio play. Adapted by Diarmuid de Faoite and Jus-

tin McCarthy, with music also by Justin, and directed by Hillary Kavanagh, the cast features a wealth of home grown talent including Aine Ni Droighnean, Eilis McCarthy, Eoin Ó Dubhghaill, Daniel Guinanne, Fia Rua, Fred McCloskey, Helen Gregg, Muireann Ní Raghaillaigh, and Philip Sweeney. Live band The Stooks features Charlie Foley, Cormac Dunne, Jimmy Fitz and Justin McCarthy. “It's like going back to the 1950s,” Justin McCarthy said. “It's probably the first time in years that live theatre has been performed under a stretch tent. It's really authentic, like one of the original theatrical fit ups.” Tickets cost €25 and are available from www.playboythemusical.ie.

Other Killarney shows on Culture Night include a performance by Afro Trad Ireland at St Mary’s Church of Ireland.

Killarney Lake Tours will launch the MV Pride of the Lakes on Lough Leane with live traditional music onboard. The Youth Movement Group will also stage an event in Killarney. Mayor of Kerry, Cllr Jimmy Moloney, welcomed the recovery of the arts sector in Kerry, connecting with people in new ways. “Culture Night in Kerry offers us a very unique opportunity to showcase the wonderful talent in terms of music, dance, art, comedy and much more,” he said. “I would encourage the people of Kerry to get involved in one of the 30 plus free events across the county and support the artists who are emerging back into live performance after a pandemic that was particularly devastating to the arts community.” Some events will have to be pre-booked. International rowing success for Caoimhe Muckross Rowing Club is celebrating after one of its members finished second in the Coupe de la Jeunesse regatta for European junior rowers at the weekend. | By Sean Moriarty

ROWING SUCCESS: Caoimhe O'Sullivan (third from left) and her teammates Lauren McCarthy Steele (Skibbereen Rowing Club), Anna Keating (Shannon Rowing Club) and Giselle Coulter (Belfast Boat Club) proudly show off their Coupe de la Jeunesse silver medals.

Caoimhe O’Sullivan was a member of the Irish Team in the Junior Women’s Quad that took second place in Linz, Austria. She was joined in the boat by Lauren McCarthy Steele (Skibbereen Rowing Club), Anna Keating (Shannon Rowing Club), and Giselle Coulter (Belfast Boat Club). Caoimhe joins a special group of Muckross rowers, becoming the 11th member of the club to race at the Coupe de la Jeunesse since 1996 and the first since 2013. “To qualify for the Coupe is itself a fantastic and rare accomplishment and to return with a medal is a great reward for all the effort and dedication invested in training. The whole club is incredibly proud and delighted for Caoimhe,” said Muckross Rowing Club’s Tim O’Shea. “The club is also grateful to Lee Rowing Club in Cork, where the Coupe crews trained for the past month under the guidance of coaches Ray Morrison, Vivian Kelleher and Mick O’Riordan.

Caoimhe has invested long hours in her training and throughout the COVID-19 restrictions and showed exceptional commitment to a testing programme involving regular training sessions on the indoor rowing machine and in the single scull out on the lake. Caoimhe’s talent and rowing skill has been guided at the Muckross club with the support of a number of the club’s coaches, including Marko Tot, Maurice Coffey, Elaine Daly and Noel Kelleher.” Caoimhe is a native of Headford and daughter of Micheal O'Sullivan and Liz Healy. “Caoimhe was cheered on from the stands at the Ottensheim course by proud parents Micheal and Liz while the whole of Muckross Rowing Club was tuned into the live Internet stream over the weekend,” added Tim. Caoimhe’s focus now turns to the Irish Rowing Championships, which takes place this weekend in Cork. Her brother Finn is also in action this weekend.

There is always a Killarney connection | By Sean Moriarty There were great celebrations on the Ross Road in the early hours of Sunday morning when Kellie Harrington took gold for Ireland at the Tokyo Olympics. Harrington become the second Irish woman, after Katie Taylor, to win an Olympic gold boxing medal, over the weekend. The Dubliner’s first coach was a man called Paddy Osborne and his son Paddy Jr, a well-known local GAA coach and Kerry District League soccer referee who has been living in Killarney for years. “He was just delighted,” Paddy Jr told the Killarney Advertiser. “I remember him

telling me years ago about this young girl – he knew then she was going to be good. She was a kick-boxer first and she came to my dad as she wanted to be a boxer. He is the current vice-president of the Irish Amateur Boxing Association and worked with Katie Taylor and others – he gave his whole life to boxing. He told her back then that she would have to pick one or the other and she picked the boxing. RISK: Eoin Quill and Dimitra Tsiapou say you have to weight up the risk of the vaccine compared to the sickness from COVID.

13.8.2021

NO STRESS: Andrew Dineen, Myles Murphy and Darragh Hartnett said they were not one bit stressed when it came to getting the vaccine.

Young people have their say about getting the vaccine Recently COVID vaccine clinics opened up for the younger generation. Our roving reporter Grigoriy Geniyevskiy asked some of Killarney's younger generation their thoughts about getting the jab. Here's what some of you had to say: "Firstly, it's about solidarity," Eoin Quill said. "We are in favour of the vaccine. We have a positive attitude towards it as it's a step towards normality." "Consider the risk of the vaccines over the risk of sickness from COVID," added Dimitra Tsiapou. Diarmaid Nagle said that he thinks as many people as possible should get vac-

cinated so that we can emerge from this pandemic. "Loads of young people seem to be on board with it." Emma Norton and Imogen Crowley said that they are "in favour of it". "We think that a lot of young people are willing to get it," they both said. "We think it's a step back to normality and it is also great to be back to indoor dining," Imogen said. "Overall, it's something that we will have to live with now," Emma

added. For friends Andrew Dineen, Myles Murphy and Darragh Hartnett, they said that they were not a bit stressed about getting it. "We weren't stressed getting the vaccine," Darragh said. "I was a bit paranoid when reading the symptoms but it was all fine. We were kind of excited to get it as well as it's a step in the right direction," Myles Murphy said. "Most people our age seem to be getting it. We're hoping to get back to the music scene and the normality," Andrew Dineen added.

IN FAVOUR: Emma Norton and Imogen Crowley are in favour of getting the vaccine.

ONBOARD: Diarmaid Nagle thinks a lot of young people are onboard when it comes to getting the vaccine.

€150,000 funding Local hotel secures for local sports clubs two significant awards | By Sean Moriarty Several sports clubs in the Killarney region will receive nearly €150,000 in funding under the Sports Capital Equipment Grants scheme. A total €637,357 in Sports Capital Equipment Grants was announced for Kerry by Minister Catherine Martin, and Minister of State, Jack Chambers, earlier this week. Of that figure, a total of €140,500 was given to sports organisations in the Killarney district. “Supporting sports teams, clubs and organisations is also tantamount to supporting community engagement and helps to foster strong community spirit. Investment in sport is also a really worthwhile policy objective for Government from a health point of view. Society reaps the rewards through improved health of the population,” local TD Brendan Griffin said. St Bridget's Basketball Club was the big-

gest winner locally. The Currow-based club will receive €23,465 for new training and storage equipment. Other basketball clubs to benefit from funding are St Paul's Basketball Club who are set to receive €11,663, and Team Cougars which is in line for €4,101. St Agatha’s GAA Club in Glenflesk will get €23,585 to be put towards new equipment. Killarney Valley Athletic Club, operator of the new Killarney Micro Track, will receive €16,343 for the purchase of equipment. Flesk Valley Rowing Club will receive €17,062 for safety equipment and a new engine for a safety boat, while Deerpark Pitch and Putt Club will pocket €12,129 to be put towards new grass cutting equipment. Two cycling clubs in the region will benefit too. Killarney Cycling Club will receive €18,466 for safety training while Sliabh Luachra Cycling Club will get €13,686 to be put towards a Cyclocross initiative.

A local hotel is celebrating this week after it was announced the winner of the 2021 Health and Safety Excellence Award, Hotel and Leisure, at the annual awards hosted by Business River Magazine, the foremost H&S award platform in Ireland. This is the second significant award to be won by Ireland’s largest regional hotel group in the last three months, as Muckross Park Hotel and The iNUA Collection also won the Excellence in Sustainability award at the Facility Management Awards 2021 at the end of April, the most prestigious awards of their kind in the country. Both awards are judged by independent panels of leading, industry-specific professionals, with rigorous criteria. “These two wins are a tremendous achievement for The iNUA Collection," Group Operations Director of The iNUA Collection, Chris Austin, said. "Each award came with some very serious competition. These two major awards so far

this year are great recognition for all the hard work and effort put into these crucial areas by our teams across our nine properties. The 2021 Health and Safety Excellence Award, Hotel and Leisure, is a huge achievement for the group and super recognition of our Health and Safety programmes. Special thanks and congratulations to Andrew Mullen, Group Facilities Manager at The iNUA Collection, Rafal Lazarz, Muckross Park Hotel’ maintenance manager, all the group’s maintenance managers and the H&S representatives across the group.” The Excellence in Sustainability award The iNUA Collection won at the Facility Management Awards 2021 at the end of April recognises an outstanding sustainability initiative executed by an FM professional, team or organisation over the past 12 months. “A sincere vote of thanks to Rafal Lazarz, maintenance manager, Muckross Park Hotel and all the hotel maintenance managers and their teams for driving sustainability across the group hotels."

WEDDING

Wedding was "relaxed and stress free"

13.8.2021

WEDDING OF THE WEEK

22

Their wedding day was one they had waited for as Deirdre Clifford and Eamon McCauley tied the knot in Scartaglin Church. It was the third attempt for Deirdre from Scartaglin and Eamon McCauley from Tyrone as they were joined by 50 close family and friends in Our Lady of Lourdes Church with a beautiful reception afterwards in Muckross Park Hotel on Saturday, July 31. Following the ceremony the couple and their bridal party took some time out at Dundag beach with local photographer Ian Cronin to capture some memories of their special day. The couple met eight years ago in Galway when Deirdre was finishing college and she met Eamon who was working in the county at the time. He surprised her in December 2017 when he popped the question and they began planning their special day almost right away. "It was fab from start to finish," Deirdre told the Killarney Advertiser. "It was our third attempt. Originally we planned it for June last year and then April this year." And cutting back numbers was a hard decision from the original 242 guests to just 50. However, Deirdre said that they wouldn't change a thing. "It was the most relaxed stress free day. We wouldn't change a thing at all. It was so intimate and everyone made it so special. We actually didn't stop smiling."

Deirdre was joined on the day by her father Jerry Clifford while her sister Susan Harnett took on Maid of Honour duties, and her nephew Tadgh, Susan's son, who turned two the day before, was so cute as the couple's pageboy. Eamon's parents Donna and Charlie also enjoyed the special occasion, while Eamon's brother Sean was Best Man. Groomsmen were Gary Floyd, Eamon's lifelong friend, as well as his first cousin Sean Ferguson. Bridesmaids were Aoife Vaughan, who Deirdre is friends with since the age of three, and her friend Julie Lumbard who she met at secondary school. Sadly Deirdre's mom Sheila passed away in February, and although deeply missed on the day, Deirdre said her presence was felt throughout the day. "I had a candle in the church and a memory table at the reception, as well as a trinket in my bouquet. She was definitely a huge part of the day. We could feel it. And as we were signing the register loads of people said they saw a butterfly near us but we didn't see it." After their big day the couple enjoyed a few days mini-moon in Antrim and plan to travel somewhere foreign next year when it's safe to do so. "We had planned New Zealand originally but it doesn't look like it's opening up anytime soon so maybe Canada."

Two Killarney men and their dogs have been selected for the Irish team at next month’s International Sheepdog Trials at Aberystwyth in Wales. Kilcummin native Tom O’Sullivan and his six-year-old dog, North Hill Tess, and Glenflesk’s Mike Healy and his young dog Bill, will join the 15-strong Irish team after qualifying at the Irish National Sheepdog Trials last weekend. This is Tom’s fourth time making the Irish Team and his second time with this particular dog, Tess, having been on the team previously in 2019. The Irish qualifiers were held in Killalee, Fossa, by kind permission of The Hotel Europe and Resort, and Mr O’Sullivan,

who is the local organising committee chairman, praised the success of the event, which ran from Thursday until Saturday, and was held in Killarney for the first time. “We had three days of sheepdog trialling at the highest standard and that produced a 15-man Irish Team to compete in Wales next month,” he said. “The event was a great success with a great local committee, many volunteers, and great food from Kilcummin Gourmet Kitchens over the three days.”

Under the Whispering Door in Athens to clear his name, tensions escalate as the authorities close in, political unrest mounts, and Beckett falls even deeper into a dangerous web of conspiracy. 'Beckett', which despite being shot during the summer before COVID, follows the recent likes of M. Night Shyamalan’s 'Old' with another welcome reminder that vacation is actually a total nightmare that will kill you a lot faster than sitting on your couch.

Author: TJ Klune TJ Klune is an American author of fantasy and romantic fiction. 'Under the Whispering Door' is a contemporary fantasy with TJ Klune's signature "quirk and charm" (PW) about a ghost who refuses to cross over and the ferryman he falls in love with. When a reaper comes to collect Wallace Price from his own funeral, Wallace suspects he really might be dead. Instead of leading him directly to the afterlife, the reaper takes him to a small village. On the outskirts, off the path through the woods, tucked between mountains, is a particular tea shop, run by a man named Hugo, the tea shop's owner to locals and the ferryman to souls who need to cross over. But Wallace isn't ready to abandon the life he barely lived. With Hugo's help he finally starts to learn about all the things he missed. When the manager, a curious and powerful being, arrives at the tea shop and gives Wallace one week to cross

over, Wallace sets about living a lifetime in seven days. Heartwarming and heartbreaking, this absorbing tale of grief and hope is told with TJ Klune's signature warmth, humour, and extraordinary empathy.

GARDEN MAGIC

Gardening - By Debby Looney

How to take plant cuttings It seems such a short time ago we were at the beginning of the summer, and here we are almost at the end again! I say this most optimistically as it is a great time to take softwood cuttings and to propagate your own plants. Basal cuttings are the easiest type of cuttings to take, also, they root at almost a one hundred percent rate. Plants suitable for this type of propagation are mostly perennials. Shasta daisies, penstemon, aconitum, delphinium, campanula, geraniums – these are all excellent candidates. The process is quite simple. Take a sharp, clean, knife or secateurs and cut a strong stem as close to the ground as possible. The closer to the root you can cut it, the better, as that is where you will have the highest concentration of growth hormones. Also, in a lot of cases you will notice little bumps on the stem. These are already the beginnings of new roots. Cut the top of the stem off to about 15cm, this prevents the plant putting its energy into the top growth. Prepare a pot with a mixture of half sharp sand and half seed and cutting compost. Dip your cutting into a clean jar of rooting power and tap off the excess. While rooting powder is not essential it does make a difference to your success rate. Never dip your cutting directly into the container your powder comes in as it can increase the risk of disease, and also leads to the product clumping. There is also a rooting gel available, however, I still think the powder is more reliable. It is a mix of growth hormone and an anti-fungal compound, which will both aid in the rooting of your cutting while at the same time

Tralee to celebrate 10 day family festival preventing it from rotting.

NEXT STEP

The next step is covering them with a clear cover, a bell cloche is ideal for pots, or alternatively a layer of clear plastic supported by some bamboo canes. If you are working on a small scale, a clear plastic bag tied around the pot will also suffice. It is important the plastic does not touch the leaves as this will lead to rotting, and that the pots are not placed in full sun, as this will lead to scorching. The covering creates a closed system where there is no need to open it up and water it, as the condensation runs back into the pot. It also controls the temperature and atmosphere. There is no need to put these cuttings into a warm place, a sheltered spot outside is fine. Ideally, do not touch them until you see new growth. What I sometimes do myself is put some slow release fertiliser in the lower half of the sand/ compost mixture, so I can leave the plants until the following spring. Once the roots are formed, repot your plants into 10cm pots, and leave them to grow on until they are a size suitable for the garden.

The team behind the traditional Féile na mBláth Park Festival in Tralee have announced plans for a series of family-friendly and COVID-compliant events over the course of 10 days later this month. Tralee Municipal District and Tralee Chamber Alliance will run the 2021 Park Festival at Pearse Park in the town between August 19 and 29. “As a Municipal District in Tralee, we spoke earlier this year about our ambition to hold a few events in the town towards the end of the summer if restrictions allowed," Mayor of Tralee, Cllr Johnnie Wall said. "The Park Festival has all the ingredients to celebrate the return of live music, food, and arts to Tralee, in a safe way. The 10-day festival, with the support of Tralee Chamber Alliance, will see three separate

events take place all under the one marquee in Pearse Park.” The festival will commence with an Irish Dancing ‘Féis’ with five hundred dancers descending on the town. This will be followed by the traditional ‘Féile’ with street theatre shows featuring Tralee’s own Fanzini Brothers, flower displays, puppet shows, circus workshops, family gardening, drum pods, dog shows and more. The final event ‘Tralee Music Revival’ is presented exclusively by Tralee Chamber Alliance and will showcase live music from Tralee bands such as ‘AfterShock’, ‘Sweet FA’, ‘Renovator’, ‘Comic Book Heroes’, ‘Queenless Kings’, and wrapping up the festival with ‘Oracle’ on the Saturday night, all taking place under a specially designed open-sided festival marquee with cabaret style seating. Tickets and information are available from www.festivaltralee.com.

HEALTH & FITNESS

Advice - By Angela Kerrisk Angela is available for advice and fitness consultations, at email info@activate.ie • www.activate.ie

Three reasons why feeling hungry is a good thing This week Angela Kerrisk from Activate Fitness explains three reasons why feeling hungry is a good thing - and it’s not what you think! One thing that “diet culture” has taught us is to fear hunger. Whether it is an ad for the latest appetite suppressant, or the readily available snacks to prevent from ever being hungry - the message is the same: it is not OK to be hungry. As we start to talk more about mindful eating, let’s discuss three reasons why feeling hungry is a good thing: Our body naturally regulates its caloric needs each day. We get a signal when our body needs more calories - a hunger cue. If you learn to respond to this cue with the appropriate response i.e. you eat, and learn to stop eating when you are full, you will be giving your body exactly how many calories it needs.

HUNGER CUES

Your hunger cues can let you know if you are eating enough at each meal, and also if you are eating in the correct balance. If you find yourself feeling hungry two hours after you ate lunch, perhaps you didn’t eat enough at lunch, or maybe you didn’t eat in the proper balance

KNOW YOUR RIGHTS

Flight and hotel cancellation Question: I have booked my own flight and hotel online. If I have to cancel what will happen to my money? ANSWER: If you have planned a holiday where you booked the flights and hotel individually, you do not have the same level of protection as with a package holiday. Your rights to cancel your flight and accommodation will be set out in the terms and conditions of the contract.

CANCELLING YOUR FLIGHT

- the plate method! If you are not feeling hungry four to five hours after you ate, that can be a signal that you overate at your previous meal. If you are dialled into what true hunger feels like, it can help you learn how to stop eating when you’re full as well. The first step to beginning to eat according to your hunger cues is to build awareness of what it feels like to be hungry, and to be OK with that feeling. Hunger is not an emergency, it is just your body’s way of letting you know that it’s ready for some more fuel. If you would like to learn more about this lifelong solution to weight management visit www.activate.ie.

31

If you have to cancel your flight or decide not to fly, you may lose the money you paid if the flight has not been cancelled by the airline or if you have not booked it as part of a package holiday. If you booked the flight yourself you have no automatic right to rerouting or a refund. However, if you have to cancel because of COVID-19, you should contact the airline. Some airlines may be willing to offer you other alternatives like a voucher or credit note, or allow you to rebook your flight for a later date.

CANCELLING YOUR ACCOMMODATION

Check the terms and conditions carefully to see what your rights are about cancellation and refund options. You should contact the booking site if you need to cancel. In general, if you booked with a booking website, your contract is with the hotel and not the booking website. You may need to go to the hotel directly

to ask for a refund. If you have a non-refundable hotel booking, it may be difficult to get your money back if you have to cancel.

TRAVEL INSURANCE

If you have taken out travel insurance to cover your holiday, check to see if flight and accommodation cancellations are covered. If you are not sure, contact your travel insurance provider directly to see if you can claim on your policy. You can read more about travel during COVID-19 and your consumer rights on citizensinformation.ie. _________________________________________________ During COVID-19, you can find comprehensive integrated information online at citizensinformation.ie/covid19/ and you can get daily updates on what’s changed on Twitter at @citizensinfo. Virtual ceremony for this year's Celebration of Light Supporters of a Kerry cancer charity are encouraged to get online again this year to mark the annual Celebration of Light ceremony. Due to the ongoing pandemic, cancer support charity, Recovery Haven Kerry, will stream its annual Celebration of Light ceremony live on its Facebook page next Thursday, August 19 at 8pm. The charity is inviting the public to join with them for the virtual ceremony, which aims to celebrate those touched by cancer and remember those we have lost. While disappointed that the event cannot take place in person, organisers have ensured that the uniqueness of this poignant event remains at the heart of the online ceremony, with all the usual prayers, readings and blessings remaining. Similar to last year’s online event, the ceremony will feature contributions from

Recovery Haven founder, Marian Barnes, the charity’s patron Dick Spring, 2009 Kerry Rose Sally-Ann Leahy, and Rose Hotel owner and valued Recovery Haven supporter, Eibhlín Henggler. The virtual event, which has been beautifully compiled by the Ballymac CE Scheme, will again be MC’d by Sean Lyons and will also feature a performance from the Kerry Choral Union. The emotional release of candles and stones will also form part of the celebration from Banna Strand, with the valued support of Banna Sea Rescue. Organisers are now inviting the people of Kerry to join them on Facebook on the night for what promises to be a truly special virtual experience. The charity is also encouraging supporters and followers to be part of the ceremony by lighting a candle in their home on the night. Special Celebration of Light candles are currently on sale at Recovery

Dubliner Kellie Harrington wrote her way into the history books in the Olympic Games Tokyo 2020 securing a gold medal, as she overcame Beatriz Ferreira of Brazil in stunning fashion by unanimous decision, 5-0, in the Women’s Light final (5760kg). Harrington came into the bout having never met the Brazilian before, and Ferreira had proven herself as a force to be reckoned with in Tokyo, defeating all who came before her in style. In the opening round, she just had the edge on Harrington, taking the judges scoring 3-2, but Harrington came out in force to win rounds two and three clear, and to go on to be crowned Olympic champion by unanimous decision and secure Ireland’s fourth medal of the Tokyo 2020 Summer Olympic Games. “Relieved, totally relieved. I’m just glad that it’s over!” Harrington said afterwards. “To have the support of a nation backing you is just, it’s actually hard to believe, I actually feel the nation has been behind me. Regardless of whatever happened out there today - whether I got a silver or a gold - I knew, and I know, that I have made them proud. “I knew it was 3-2 after the first round,” she reflected. “I just went back out and

Yes, you read that correct - Japanese parents are sending bags of rice with the equivalent weight of the newborn to their family members. The idea is that grandparents, aunts, uncles and cousins etc can give the bag which is the exact weight of the newborn - a cuddle during the pandemic to make them feel like they've connected. With unique designs and colours, the bags are wrapped in a blanket and have a photo of the baby on top. “I first had the idea about 14 years ago when my own son was born and I was thinking about what I could do for relatives who lived far away and couldn’t come and see him," Naruo Ono, the owner of Kome no Zoto Yoshimiya rice shop, said. "So we decided to make bags of rice that were the same weight and shape as the baby, so relatives could hold them and feel the cuteness.”

Fish with human-like teeth caught A North Carolina angler's catch is going viral after a Facebook post revealed he reeled in a fish with a mouth full of human-like teeth. Jennette's Pier, a popular fishing destination in Nags Head, posted photos to Facebook showing angler Nathan Martin posing with the nine-pound sheepshead fish he reeled in. The post, hashtagged #BigTeethBigTimes was shared hundreds of times on the social media site, with commenters

pointing out the human-like qualities of the teeth. "I have never seen a fish like this one," said Jean-Claude Savard. Another user, Orkun Movic, said, "His teeth look better than mine". It shows the fish having incisors on the upper and lower jaws. It also has several rows of molars to crush its prey. It was later identified as a sheepshead fish, which got its name due to its mouth looking like the mouth of a sheep. "It's a very good fight when you're fight-

ing on the line, it's a really good catch, and it tastes very good," Martin told McClatchy News. Despite some people not believing the image, the sheepshead fish has existed for a long time and is commonly found in North and South America including North Carolina. It's a deep-bodied flatfish with sharp dorsal spines. It usually grows 10-20 inches long. Sheepshead fish are known for their teeth, which allow them to eat omnivorous diets.

Barbie honour for COVID vaccine scientist Professor Sarah Gilbert, who oversaw the creation of the Oxford-AstraZeneca vaccine, has been honoured with a Barbie doll in her image.

IRISH ROOTS: Kathy Hochul will be the first female Governor of New York when she takes up the position later this month.

New York governor’s West Kerry roots Kathy Hochul, the new Governor of New York, can trace her roots to the Dingle Peninsula. Houchel will take over the role on August 24 following the resignation of current Governor Andrew Cuomo who resigned on Tuesday following a raft of sexual harassment allegations made against him by female employees of his administration. Hochul was born Kathleen Courtney in Buffalo, New York, the second of six children of John P. ‘Jack’ Courtney and Patricia Ann 'Pat' (Rochford) Courtney. Her grandparents, on her father’s side were from West Kerry, John Courtney, Fahamore, and Mary Browne, Cutteen. As the first female Governor of New York she remains very proud of her Irish roots. “Just over one hundred years ago, my father's parents fled lives surely destined

The doll is intended to honour her accomplishments during the epidemic and to encourage children all across the world to pursue a career in science or medicine. The COVID-19 vaccine, which she assisted in developing, is the most extensively used in the world, protecting hundreds of millions of people. Professor Gilbert is amused by the concept of a Barbie doll fashioned in her image, but she hopes the doll will have a beneficial influence on children and motivate them to pursue careers as scientists. "It's a very strange concept to have a Barbie doll created in my likeness. I hope it will be part of making it more normal for

girls to think about careers in science, although, to be honest, when I was a young girl I never believed that I wouldn't have a career in science," Dame Sarah Gilbert said. Mattel, the American toy company which makes the doll, is also honouring five other women who have been pioneers during the global health crisis. In an effort to update its image, the company has become less "Come on, Barbie, let's go party!" and more "Come on, Barbie, let's end the pandemic!" "I hope that my Barbie doll, as well as others of women who work in science and medicine, will just keep reminding them [children] that there are many careers open to them. So when they're playing, they are also thinking about what they might like to do in the future," Prof. Gilbert added.

for poverty in county Kerry. They suffered hardship like millions of immigrants before and after them, but ultimately lived the American dream,” she said in a St Patrick’s Day speech earlier this year. “Looking back, I realise these two barely educated but loving people had a profound impact on my decision to enter public service. I remember as a young girl often walking into their tiny two-bedroom house where they raised eight children. The first image I saw on the wall was a picture of Jesus Christ, whose teachings command us to care for the poor, the hungry, the homeless, the imprisoned. Next to that picture, placed equally in prominence, was a portrait of John F. Kennedy, the first Irish-American President, who challenged us to ask not what our country can do for us, but ask what we can do for our country.”

Robots take over the driver’s seat! A well-known car company has come up with a novel way of ensuring their vehicles can withstand the toughest conditions - by recruiting robot test drivers. Located in Cologne, Germany, Ford’s Weather Factory helps ensure drivers can rely on vehicles that have endured conditions that are found in the Sahara Desert, in Siberia, and atop the tallest Alpine peaks. For human drivers, wind tunnel testing

– in particular at high altitude – requires numerous safety protocols, such as having oxygen bottles, medical equipment and a paramedic on-site, while driver health is constantly monitored. Each robot, nicknamed by the team as Shelby and Miles, are able to operate at temperatures ranging from -40°C to +80°C as well as at extreme altitudes – and can be set up and programmed for different driving styles. The robot test driver’s legs extend to

the accelerator, brake and clutch pedals, with one arm positioned to change gear and the other used to start and stop the engine. “These two new drivers are fantastic additions to the team, as they can take on the challenging endurance tests at high altitudes and in hot temperatures. Once the robot is in the driver’s seat, we can run tests through the night without ever having to worry that the driver will need a sandwich or a bathroom break,” Frank

Seelig, supervisor at Wind Tunnel Testing Ford of Europe, said. Ford continues to conduct real-world testing in European locations and across the world, including the Grossglockner mountain in Austria and the snowy Arjeplog region in Sweden.

New committee elected to Killarney and District Motor Club It’s all change at the helm of Killarney and District Motor Club as a new committee has been elected to lead the club into the future. The club held its much delayed 2020 Annual General Meeting, in a socially distanced manner, at Killarney Racecourse last Thursday evening. Long-serving club official and volunteer Dan Keane from Kenmare, was elected as the club’s chairman replacing Muckross’ Diarmuid Cronin who stood down after over 10 years in the position. Dan brings a wealth of experience to the role. He has held several senior positions on the organising committee of the club’s two main events, The Rally of the Lakes and the Killarney Historic Rally.

A former rally co-driver, highlights of his 10-year career include winning his class in the 2000 Irish Tarmac Rally Championship and finishing ninth overall on the Manx Trophy Rally the same year. “It is a great honour to be voted in as the chairman by my club colleagues,” he said. “I am looking forward to the future of the sport and seeing some sort of normality returning.” He paid tribute to Mr Cronin and his outgoing team before taking up his position as the chair of second-biggest motor club in Ireland. Other newcomers to the committee include Orla Galvin Griffin as the new treasurer and Ivan Hurley as the new club PRO.

Faha man's vehicle the star of classic car run Tony Darmody of Faha had the honour of driving the oldest car in the 11th annual Ballymac Classic Car Run on Sunday last. Over one hundred cars took part in the event to raise funds for ‘Help Rose Bloom’ a local charity set up to help Rose O’Flaherty who suffers from Type 1 Spinal Muscular Atrophy (SMA1) a severe genet-

ic condition that weakens muscles and causes problems with movement. The oldest car in the fleet was a 1953 Austin A40 Somerset owned by Tony Darmody who is better known for his role as Chairman of Listry Community Council. Tony has owned the car since 2015. He bought the 67-year-old car at the request of his daughter Aisling who decided this was the one she wanted to be driven to

Fossa Church on the day of her wedding in August 2017. Tony completed a full restoration of the vehicle ahead of his daughter’s big day. He has the full history of the car kept in a neat folder in the glove box. He is ready to answer any question that enthusiasts might throw at him at events like the one held on Sunday. “It was manufactured on December 18,

1953,” Tony said. “Aisling picked out this car, including the colour. It was in a sorry state when I got it, but it was fully restored in time for her wedding to Daniel O’Sullivan. It was a ground-up restoration.” After a ‘Cars n' Coffee’ event at O’Riada’s Bar on Sunday, the 107 cars and 16 Honda 50s set off for a tour of West Kerry.

How to do a job SIMPLY BEAUTIFUL interview with confidence Achieve fuller Beauty - By Jill O'Donoghue

looking brows

It is perfectly normal to feel nervous when you are facing a job interview, in fact experts tell us that a certain amount of nerves are necessary to help us to perform with energy and enthusiasm when we meet the interview board.

The challenge is to ensure that those nerves don’t become overwhelming as this can hinder you from giving your best performance. You want to sound confident - even if you don’t feel it! Start by reminding yourself that the company or organisation already believe that you are competent to do the job, otherwise you wouldn’t have gotten to interview stage. Your task in the interview is to show evidence of your skills and competencies through relevant examples from your experience, to show your technical knowledge about the role or position and to demonstrate what sets you apart from other candidates. The more confidently you can do this, the better. Prepare in advance of the interview by carefully examining the job description and specification, research the company or organisation itself and know every detail you have included in your CV or application and cover letter. You should also read carefully any information you receive about the format of the interview. Are there a number of stages? Is it by phone, virtual or face to face? You may be told for example, that you are being invited for a competency based, technical, strengths or skills based interview. You may also be required to do a presentation or bring evidence of a completed project. While there are some techniques specific to the format of the particular interview, there are certain generic questions that you need to be ready for – for example; Tell us about yourself, What are your strengths and weaknesses, Why should you get the job over other candidates, Why do you want the job, What do you know about the company and the position? These questions may seem quite straight forward but when you are put on the spot in the interview it is easy to get flustered, begin to waffle or get tongue-tied, so the key thing is to prepare, practice and perfect the information that you expect to be asked for in the interview. It is impossible to predict exactly what you are going to be asked and you will have to think on your feet, but the more familiar you are with information relevant to the job, company, sector and yourself, the

I have been doing eyebrow lamination for a few years, but since we reopened in May, I have seen big demand for this service.

better chance you have of answering difficult questions. Use language you are comfortable with as this will help you to feel confident but make sure you include key terms that are relevant to the role.

COMPETENCY

It is fairly standard to be asked to give evidence of the key competencies and to make sure you stay on point with your answer, use the STAR technique. For example, if asked to show evidence of a time you dealt effectively with a conflict structure your answer as follows – give the situation or task you were dealing with, the actions you took and what the result was. Be ready to elaborate on what you learned from the experience and what you would do differently. Practice your answers in front of a mirror, with a trusted friend or record yourself on your phone so you can work on improving your pacing and delivery and you become used to listening to the sound of your own voice speaking confidently about yourself. Use positive affirmations to remind yourself of how capable you are. The first step in convincing an interview board that you are the right person for the job is to believe that yourself. Show that you are confident in your body language and tone of voice. Listen carefully to what you are being asked. Make sure you leave the interview knowing you have made the right impression. At worst you will have gained very valuable experience and at best you will get the job!

They are suitable for all ages and types of brows, male and female and are tailored to suit the client's tastes. If it's a fluffy eyebrow look, more symmetry in uneven brows or shape up unruly hairs, eyebrow lamination and tint is the treatment for you. This is a corrective treatment that helps you achieve your desired new shape for up to six weeks. Brow lamination is a two-step eyebrow perming treatment that involves correcting the brow shape by setting the hair in place using a chemical solution. Eyebrows are glued into place and straightened, then the first of the set-

ting solutions is applied to break down the bonds in the hair so they can be manipulated into a new position. Step two, another solution applied to rebuild these bonds and set the brows to create a more uniform look with a higher arch. Some clients suffer from downward growing hairs, flat or curly hairs. Lamination is a fantastic new treatment that can change the direction of the growth to a more uniform look with a higher arch and a more desirable brow shape, and with correct aftercare they can last longer. It can help to achieve instantly fuller looking brows using existing hair. • For more information call Jill on 064 6632966.

The best way to learn is to start While I advocate education as a fast-track to becoming a confident investor, the idea that you need to know everything can be a major deterrent for would-be investors. Breaking News: nobody has all the answers to this game, and nobody ever will, no matter how many hours they dedicate to it. The feeling that you don't know enough is often used as a procrastination tool regardless of your knowledge. I've also seen firsthand how people can get stuck in a learning loop without ever buying a stock. Across so many aspects of life, the best way to learn is to start, and investing is no different. Just put one foot in front

of the other. The learning curve may be steep, you will undoubtedly make some mistakes along the way, but practical experience trumps academic theory every time. Your first step? Set up a brokerage account Your second step? Create a watchlist Create a list of stocks and Exchange Traded Fund (ETF) you would like to invest in. This watchlist will change and grow over time, but here is a solid base from which to start. Focus on companies you like, companies you use every day, products that you use today that you believe you will still be using 10 years from now. And finally, it's time to whittle down

your watchlist to just one stock. We're not talking about your life savings here; you can put as little as €10 down. Take your time and pick a company you are a customer of or one you interact with regularly; maybe it's an App on your phone that you can't live without or a service that you think more and more people will need in the future. Your first pick doesn't have to be perfect, but I promise you it will pique your interest in that company and everything about it. This newfound interest may lead to further investments within the company or act as a knowledge base for comparison against other similar businesses going forward. Start small but start now.

NOVENA TO ST. THERESE O little St. Theresa of the Child Jesus, who during your short life on earth became a mirror of angelic purity, of love strong as death, and of wholehearted abandonment to God, now that you rejoice in the reward of your virtues, cast a glance of pity on me as I leave all things in your hands. Make my troubles your own- speak a word for me to our Lady Immaculate, whose flower of special love you were to that Queen of Heaven “who smiled on you at the dawn of your life”. Beg her as the Queen of the heart of Jesus to obtain for me by her powerful intersession, the grace I yearn for so ardently at this Novena, and that she join with it a blessing that may strengthen me during life. Defend me at the hour of death, and lead me straight on to a happy eternity. Amen. FM

NOVENA TO ST. MARTIN Compassionate St. Martin you were always a generous and dedicated worker. Not one day of your life found you idle. Help me now in these difficult times to find suitable employment. I have no wish to be without work. By your prayers I wish to be given a situation where i can use to the full all the gifts that God has given to me. Intercede for me that I will obtain guidance in seeking out possible opportunities. When I am employed obtain for me the graces to be faithful and diligent for the glory of God for my own good and that of all the people we serve. Ask God to give me health of mind and body and generosity in meeting the needs of others. I ask this through Christ our Lord. Amen. FM

NOVENA TO THE HOLY SPIRIT

O Holy Spirit, you who solve all problems, light all roads so that I can attain my goal. You gave me the divine gift to forgive and forget all evil against me and that in all instances of my life you are with me. I want in this short prayer to thank you for all things you have given me as you confirm once again that I never wanted to be separated from you in spite of all material illusions. I wish to be with you in Eternal Glory. Thank you for mercy towards me and mine. This prayer must be said for three days, after three days the favour will be granted. FM

NOVENA PRAYER TO SAINT PHILOMENA

Heavenly Father, I call on you right now in

We beseech Thee, O Lord, to grant us the pardon of our sins by the intercession of Saint, virgin and martyr, who was always pleasing in thy sight by her eminent chastity and by the profession of every virtue. Amen. Illustrious virgin and Martyr, Saint Philomena, behold me prostrate before the throne whereupon it has pleased the Most Holy Trinity to place thee. Full of confidence in thy protection, I entreat thee to intercede for me with God, from the heights of Heaven deign to cast a glance upon thy humble client! Spouse of Christ, sustain me in suffering, fortify me in temptation, protect me in the dangers surrounding me, and in particular (Here specify your petition). Above all, assist me at the hour of my death. Saint Philomena, powerful with God, pray for us. Amen. O God, Most Holy Trinity, we thank Thee for the graces Thou didst bestow upon the Blessed Virgin Mary, and upon Thy handmaid Philomena, through whose intercession we implore Thy Mercy. Amen. FM

MIRACLE PRAYER Dear Heart of Jesus, in the past I have asked You for many favours. This time I ask you this very special one (mention favour). Take it, dear Heart of Jesus and place it within Your own Heart where Your Father sees it. Then, in His merciful eyes it will become Your favour not mine. Amen. Killarney’s Jordan Lee heading for Japan to compete in Paralympic Games Killarney high jumper Jordan Lee has been selected to represent Ireland at the upcoming Paralympic Games, which will run from August 24 to September 5 in Tokyo. On Monday, the talented Killarney Valley AC athlete was named as part of the eight-person athletics team that has now linked up with the other 21 Irish competitors across various disciplines. The Irish team left for Japan on Wednesday. Lee’s selection for the Games is the culmination of three years of hard work alongside his coach, Tomás Griffin, and

the Kerryman will be hoping to fulfil his potential on the international stage. The 21-year-old has already enjoyed remarkable success in his sport in a short period of time. He claimed a bronze medal at the European Para Athletics Championships in 2018 and finished fourth at the same event this year, jumping a championship record and season’s best of 1.87m in Bydgoszcz, Poland. Lee spoke of his disappointment after the latter performance, but it must be said that the field was strong. Now he has an opportunity to show what he can do on

the biggest stage of all. Lee expressed his excitement following his call-up on Monday, taking to Instagram to share the good news. “I am officially selected for the Tokyo 2020 Paralympic Games!” he wrote. “Delighted and thrilled to be selected for my first Games. Massive thank you for everybody who has helped me on my journey so far. My coach Tomás Griffin, my club Killarney Valley AC, and my sponsors Kelliher’s Garage, Circle K and PepTalk. “Tokyo, let’s be having you!” The Games will feature 539 events

across 22 sports at 21 venues. Athletics events will take place from Friday, August 27 to Sunday, September 5. Lee’s event, the T47 high jump, will get underway on Sunday, August 29 at 11am GMT. Lee’s track and field teammates on Team Ireland include sprinters Jason Smyth (competing in his fourth Paralympic Games and seeking his sixth gold medal) and Orla Comerford (second Games), 2016 gold-medal-winner Michael McKillop (1500m) and 2016 silver-medal-winner Niamh McCarthy (discus).

CHAMPIONS: The Dingle team who defeated Kerin's O'Rahilly's by 2-16 to 1-2 in the final of Division 1 of the County League. Pic: Dingle GAA.

Dingle claim Division 1 crown after 43-year wait Dingle are the Kerry Senior Football League Division 1 champions for the first time since 1978 after a surprisingly one-sided final against Kerin’s O’Rahilly’s in Kennedy Park, Annascaul. The teams appeared to be fairly evenly matched heading into this encounter as both had topped their respective pools in the rejigged format, but the men from back west well and truly trounced their Tralee counterparts with plenty to spare. Dingle led by 1-9 to just 0-1 at the break and it didn’t get much better for Strand Road after the interval. In the end, the men in red and white waltzed home to a 2-16 to 1-2 win. The last time Dingle won Division 1 out was in 1978 when they beat Austin Stacks for the 1977 title. At the other end of the table, there is still one relegation place yet to be decided. John Mitchels play Rathmore on Saturday at 2pm in the Fitzgerald Stadium, with the losers dropping down to Division 2 alongside Kilcummin and Beaufort who finished bottom of their respective groups.

DIVISION 2

St Mary’s were crowned Division 2 champions following a 2-16 to 1-5 victory over Ballymac, who have also been promoted to the top tier. Joining them

in Division 1 for 2022 are Gneeveguilla who saw off Castleisland Desmonds with seven points to spare (0-19 to 1-9) in the promotion playoff. Fellow East Kerry side Listry retained their Division 2 status by defeating Ballydonoghue in the relegation playoff. Crokes B and Dromid are the other two sides slipping down to Division 3.

DIVISION 3

A resurgent Laune Rangers outfit continue to climb the divisions in impressive fashion following their Division 3 final victory over Listowel Emmets (3-14 to 1-8). Emmets will line out in Division 2 next season despite the heavy loss, as will Milltown/Castlemaine who got the better of Churchill in their promotion playoff. At the bottom, Ardfert and Duagh had already been relegated to Division 4 and they will be joined by Keel, who lost to St Senan’s in the playoff

DIVISION 4

Firies and Renard have been promoted to Division 3, although the Division

4 final will not be staged. The county board confirmed this week that the title has been awarded to Firies. Castlegregory take on Skellig Rangers in the playoff to decide the third team to be promoted to the third tier. The losers of this Sunday’s relegation playoff between Knocknagoshel and Lispole will be relegated alongside Waterville and Finuge.

DIVISION 5

Austin Stacks B have already been promoted to Division 4 along with Cordal but the sides will do battle on Sunday week to see who takes home the silverware. Ballyduff face Cromane Sunday fortnight in the third-place playoff. At the other end, one of Laune Rangers B and Kerins O’Rahilly’s B will be relegated to Division 6A

DIVISION 6A/6B/6C

Glenflesk B earned promotion from 6A following a fine victory over Rathmore B, Tuosist defeated Kenmare Shamrocks B in the final of 6B, and Dingle B capped a fine weekend for the club by defeating Fossa B in the final of Division 6C.

CLUB CHAMPIONSHIP DRAW

The draw for the 2021 Club Championships has been made and although

some gaps still need to be filled due to the outstanding fixtures in last year’s competitions, some interesting grouping have been revealed. The pools in the Senior Club Championship bear a striking resemblance to last year’s pools with Dr Crokes once again facing up against Kenmare Shamrocks and Templenoe. This trio will be joined by the winners of the 2020 Intermediate Club Championship (i.e. Spa, Beaufort, Na Gaeil or Castleisland Desmonds). Defending champions Austin Stacks are in Group 2 against the Killarney Legion and Dingle – both of whom they played in the group stage last year – with crosstown rivals Kerin’s O’Rahilly’s switching over from Group 1. Meanwhile, the dates for those outstanding 2020 semi-finals have been set. The Intermediate Club Championship semis (Na Gaeil v Beaufort and Spa v Desmonds) will be staged on August 29 if Kerry are not in the All-Ireland final and on Sunday, September 12 if they are. The Junior Premier final between Gneeveguilla and Ballydonoghue is subject to the same conditions, while the Junior final between Castlegregroy and Annascaul will take place on August 29. This fixture can be set as neither side has a player on the Kerry panel.

‘I genuinely believe Former Mayo footballer John Gibbons speaks to his old friend Eamonn Fitzgerald about Saturday’s All-Ireland semi-final, and pinpoints the areas the Connacht champions will need to improve upon if they are to defeat the Dubs No Kerry v Tyrone game on Sunday due to COVID problems in Tyrone, so the focus is on Dublin and Mayo tomorrow in the All-Ireland semi-final. It seems like an eternity since Mayo won the Sam Maguire. You have to go back to 1951, in fact, and since then they have lost finals in 1989, 1996 (after a replay), 1997, 2004, 2006, 2012, 2013, 2016 (after a replay), 2017 and 2020. There is just one member alive of that last Mayo team to win the Sam Maguire and that is the powerful Paddy Prendergast, who has been living in Tralee for over 40 years. Glad to say Paddy is alive and in good health.

Many of our readers will remember Willie McGee, the red-headed full forward who really almost single-handedly beat Kerry in an U21 All-Ireland final by scoring four goals. McGee and the stylish centre-forward John Gibbons later teamed up as the central plank of the Mayo senior attack, meeting Kerry in two NFL finals in the early seventies. John Gibbons and I were working colleagues, but in direct opposition in those finals. During the week I spoke to John in his Louisburgh home and first asked him how Mayo are coping without the injured Cillian O’Connor. Mayo have coped reasonably well with-

out Cillian, but you cannot lose a player of his quality without seriously diminishing your forward line. He has been Mayo's star forward for years: no other Mayo forward has come close to him with his forward play, his scoring ability from play and, very importantly, his free-taking. Free takers win All-Irelands. There is a list as long as your arm, from Tony McTeague, Jimmy Keaveney, and a longer list in Kerry alone. Think recently of Michael Murphy, Stephen Cluxton even, Dean Rock, someone who is able to score frees under the biggest pressure. That's what Mayo have lost in Cillian. Young Ryan

O'Donoghue has done very well but he is untried at this level. What of the other younger players? Tommy Conroy has great talent and played very well in the second half against Galway, but he was anonymous in last year's All-Ireland. Darren McHale, another newcomer, was taken off at half-time against Galway. That's what you get from young players: inconsistency. They are talented but inconsistent and with only two experienced players in the forward line (Aidan O'Shea and Diarmuid O'Connor), it's expecting a lot of the young players to step up to the mark and it took the introduction of

that Mayo can win’ 'old-timer' Kevin McLoughlin at halftime against Galway to change the course of the game. I believe that Mayo will really miss Cillian - that will be their first real test without him. How do you rate the new kids on the block, John? Of the other newcomers Pádraig O'Hora at full back – provided he has recovered from a shoulder injury – is a fine prospect. He is physically strong and athletic, not afraid to tackle and break forward. He should have Lee Keegan beside him and probably Michael Plunkett in the other corner. I would expect the half back line to be Paddy Durcan, and we all know his ability, Young Player of the Year Oisín Mullen at centre back, and probably Eoghan McLaughlin or Stephen Coen at left half back. That line has the attacking potential to trouble Dublin. It's how they can handle their defensive duties against the Kilkenny, O’Callaghan, Rock – forwards and others who may well decide the match. At midfield Mattie Ruane is developing into one of the best midfielders in the country but if the real Brian Fenton turns up, Mattie will have his hands full. Aidan O’Shea has been a huge player for Mayo but has had a disappointing record in Croke Park, scoring so little in 6 outings. Where would you play him? The dilemma of where to play Aidan O'Shea is a head-scratcher. I thought he had a marvellous game against Galway. His work rate is always top class and if you examine his displays, he never gets the amount of frees that he deserves. He will probably be fouled twice while in possession and yet will have a free given against him for over carrying. I would play him at full forward but I think he prefers to roam around the centre forward spot so that he's involved more in the play. Are Dublin on the wane? They are they still a strong force. However, if Mayo play against Dublin in the first half as they did against Galway then the game will be over by half-time regardless of whether Dublin are on the wane or not. Mayo were sloppy in the back line and gave away two sloppy goals. Their forwards in that first half were wasteful in the extreme. You won't get away with that against Dublin. Having said that I believe Mayo will put it up to Dublin and that it will be a close encounter, as I genuinely believe they can win.

MY VIEW

I take a different view to my friend John Gibbons. Dublin have not been beaten

DILEMMA: Should Mayo play Aidan O'Shea at full forward or centre forward? The dilemma is a real "head-scrather" according to John Gibbons. Pic: Ramsey Cardy/Sportsfile.

in six years and I expect them to continue on their way tomorrow. Yes, there are signs that they may not be as sharp as heretofore and have lost a few key players, none more influential than goalkeeper Stephen Cluxton. There was a big hullabaloo in the media that he never announced publicly that he had retired. He departed on his own terms. He owed Dublin or the GAA public nothing after a marvellous career. Fear ann féin is ea Cluxton. As far as I can recall, neither did Maurice Fitzgerald make a public announcement about his retirement. Evan Comerford, the new Dublin keeper, is quite competent but has not yet perfected the skill of consistently finding teammate with the kickout. I wonder will Mayo press up on those kickouts. I believe they should because Dublin love to launch attacks from deep. They are superbly fit and are quite content to inter-pass and hold possession 50 yards from goal. They will not attempt Holy Mary kicks, with a high chance of failure. Hold the ball until a chink appears in the opposition’s defence and the ball is delivered to the player in the best position to score. This is usually predicated by the runner coming from deep. It could be anyone, not just running, but galloping

at high speed. It may be Fenton, James McCarthy, Ciarán Kilkenny, Johnny Small, Con O’Callaghan, take your pick. Kerry folk will remember Eoin Murchan doing just that and scoring the goal that deprived us of the All-Ireland we should have won. In the Leinster final Brian Fenton was largely invisible. He will be influential tomorrow. For Mayo, Aidan O’Shea has to be a leader; he must lead from the front tomorrow, to inspire the young cohort playing with the big boys on the grand stage for the first time. I have been impressed by the progress of the young ones on the Mayo team and wish them well tomorrow. Mayo bridesmaids once more? Unfortunately, I think so.

THE OLYMPICS

The Tokyo Olympics ended on a high for Ireland early on Sunday morning last when Kellie Harrington powered her way to Olympic gold in a terrific nine-minute encounter. Now boxing out of St Mary’s BC Tallaght, the inner-city Sherriff Street (Portland Row) native has the same birthplace as music legend Luke Kelly . She put her family and friends on the world map, the former chiseller who

grew up to be on top of the world. And it is where she belongs. She stated that she intends to return to her part-time cleaning job at St Vincent's Psychiatric Hospital in Dublin, regardless of her result at the Olympics. Maith thú Kellie. Gaisce mór déanta agat. Never losing the run of youself. You weren’t born with a silver spoon in your mouth and you never forgot where you came from. Hope your da enjoys the bag of spuds from the Kilkenny farmer. Spuds weren’t always that plentiful when you were growing up. Of course Skibberen RC got Ireland off to a great start. I asked Fossa native Kieran McCarthy what’s so special about Skibbereen Rowing Club? “It is not alone its closeness to the River Ilen and the fact that the club has this incredible stretch of water all to themselves, but it’s the people that make this club tick. Incredible volunteers and coaches who give so much time to the club. People like Dominic Casey, the mastermind behind so much success for the club and now Ireland, are rowing mad, and every decision they make is designed to help the athletes and the club improve. Not alone do the coaches give the athletes advice, but they equip them with the confidence and self-belief that they can go on the water and beat the best in the world, and that’s exactly what they do. So many clubs in all different sports could learn a lot from Skibbereen RC’s approach, to see how this small club has grown into a medal factory and now has Olympic gold, silver and bronze medals. The key, I think, is the people involved. Without volunteers, it’s very tough, but this club is a family.” Why was Gary O’Donovan not in the winning boat with his brother Paul? “Quite simply, Fintan McCarthy, another Skibb man, is better right now. But that just shows the strength of rowing in Skibbereen, that you had two sets of brothers from the one parish, Gary and Paul O’Donovan and twins Fintan and Jake McCarthy, battling for two seats in the two one boat. Paul and Fintan together are magic. They are now Olympic, World and European champions, and they set a world record in their semi-final win. Gary went to Tokyo as back-up and he is determined to get back in the boat again so watch this space.” We surely will, Kieran. The summer Olympics are over. Now let us all get behind the Irish entries in the Paralympics. They deserve our support after overcoming so many obstacles to wear that Irish singlet.

OPINION WEEKLY SPORT

Our sports editor ADAM MOYNIHAN shares his thoughts on the week's burning issues

Tough break for Tyrone but the show must go on

In 19th century circuses, whenever a bear got a puncture in their unicycle or a lion got fed up of being tamed and bit the head off a lion tamer, the ring master would clap his hands, smile and say, “the show must go on”. Health and safety is probably more important in modern-day Ireland than it was in a 19th century circus, especially in the COVID era, but the saying still applies. No matter what happens, things can’t be put on hold forever. The show must go on. The Tyrone footballers have been unfortunate, that much is certainly true. And naturally we all hope that any players who are ill with COVID make a speedy recovery. A COVID outbreak in the camp in the lead up to the All-Ireland series is a nightmare scenario. It’s the last thing anyone would have wanted heading into the business end of the season. The GAA did the right thing by availing of the spare week in the intercounty calendar (a week had been set aside for a possible All-Ireland final replay) and postponing this weekend’s Kerry versus Tyrone game to next Saturday, and the All-Ireland final to September 4. This will allow the Ulster champions to field a team in the semi, Tyrone GAA chairman Michael Kerr has confirmed. By the sounds of things, the players who are

actually unwell and also those who have tested positive will be out of isolation and free to play by then. However, in the same interview, Kerr also raised the prospect of Tyrone pulling out of the fixture. “This is about player welfare, and it's clear that our players will not be ready to engage in a high-intensity championship game so soon after being directly affected by this virus… The management will not be making a decision until this weekend on whether we will be capable of fulfilling the fixture. We are grateful to have the opportunity to be able to field, but by the same token, disappointed that Croke Park have not given us sufficient time to prepare a proper challenge for Kerry.” Tyrone had asked the GAA to suspend the match for two weeks, it was revealed. On Tuesday, joint manager Brian Dooher reiterated Kerr’s message. “[We've been] given the six days extension, which we're grateful for too, but it's going to be a struggle to get these boys back and get them performing to their ability. It definitely will be a struggle

RIVALS: David Clifford races clear of Ronan McNamee of Tyrone during the recent Division 1 semi-final in Killarney. Pic: Brendan Moran/Sportsfile.

to get them back to get some of these players back in any sort of shape. Preparations will be brutally hindered but we are where we are, we'll make the best of it and we'll make a call on it probably the middle of next week.” The middle of next week would be three days out from the rescheduled fixture. On Wednesday the Gaelic Players Association issued a statement saying they would “consult closely with the GAA to ensure adequate time is allowed to assess the welfare of players before a decision can be made by Tyrone.”

A BIT MUCH

You’d have to sympathise with Tyrone’s situation but this talk of not playing the match is a bit much, is it not? Teams fulfil fixtures under difficult circumstances all the time. If you go down the ranks, how many junior games have gone ahead despite one or both teams struggling for numbers, sometimes scraping together the bare 15 at the last minute? Dragging fellas out of bed, or out of the local tavern, just so the match can be played. There is a desire at all levels of the GAA to fulfil fixtures in order to uphold the integrity of the sport, the integrity of the competition in question and the integrity of the clubs and counties involved. And here we have an elite team threat-

ening to pull out of the biggest tournament in Ireland at the semi-final stage, not because they don’t have players, but because they feel that those players won’t be “ready”. Tyrone would have us believe that they are worried about getting a hiding. If teams start pulling out of matches for fear that they’re going to get bate, we might as well call the whole thing off. No competition will be completed. You also have to consider the fact that Tyrone are just one piece of the puzzle. There are other stakeholders involved. Kerry’s preparations have already been disrupted and another postponement would disrupt them further. If the semi-final is put back another week, so too will the final. That would leave Mayo or Dublin waiting a month between matches, which isn’t fair either. Meanwhile, supporters are trying to organise their long-awaited trips to Dublin around all this uncertainty. And, crucially, another delay would impact the club players as the start of their respective championships would need to be pushed back to make room for a September 11/12 final. For what it’s worth, I can’t see Tyrone pulling out. How could they? Even if their preparation has been significantly affected, anything can happen on a given day. They could quite easily beat Kerry regardless and find themselves in a final – they are just 140 minutes from their fourth All-Ireland title. They won’t just throw in the towel at this stage. They would like an extra week, for sure, but they shouldn’t get it. Even if the show is not going to plan, it must go on.

Kerry’s biggest fantasy league just keeps on getting bigger Fantasy football is back and better than ever! The team at the Killarney Advertiser are thrilled to confirm that starting this weekend we will once again be hosting our popular Fantasy Premier League competition, with some top class prizes up for grabs. Last season over 1,100 players took part in the free-to-enter Killarney Advertiser League, once again making it the largest fantasy football league in Kerry. With tournament sponsors Brian James on board again for 2021/22, we are hoping to attract even more participants for the forthcoming season. As always, the league has simply been renewed from last year, so for last season’s participants all you need to do is visit the Fantasy Premier League website or app and pick your team. You will then be automatically re-entered into the Killarney Advertiser League for the coming campaign. If this is your first time joining the league, you can sign up by going to ‘Create and

join new leagues’ and entering the code ‘sjjox7’. A €50 voucher for Brian James will be awarded to the highest-scoring manager in each individual month of the season and the overall winner next May will collect the grand prize of a voucher for €250. Speaking at the launch, Killarney Advertiser Sports Editor Adam Moynihan said he was looking forward to another rollercoaster season of FPL action. “The start of the Premier League season

is always an exciting time for soccer fans and picking your fantasy team only adds to that excitement. “Thankfully the Killarney Advertiser League continues to grow and we’re hoping to attract even more participants this time around. Of course, it wouldn’t be possible without the generous support of Brian O’Shea of Brian James, who has been with us since Day 1.” Would-be fantasy champions are no doubt fretting over their teams ahead of the new season and with £100 million to

spend on 15 players from 20 squads, the possibilities are endless. Some of the experts are tipping English defenders Trent Alexander-Arnold (Liverpool - £7.5m) and Luke Shaw (Manchester United - £5.5m) to make an impact in Gameweek 1, with the likes of Bruno Fernandes (Manchester United £12m), Mo Salah (Liverpool - £12.5m) and Dominic Calvert-Lewin (Everton - £8m) expected to be popular choices further up the field. Of the 497 players available in the game, Salah is the joint most expensive alongside Spurs’ wantaway striker Harry Kane. Sadio Mané (Liverpool), Fernandes and Kevin De Bruyne (Manchester City) are next dearest at £12m each. Manchester City winger Raheem Sterling is the sixth most expensive player. England’s Euro 2020 hero can be purchased for £11m. Manchester City forked out £100m in real money for Aston Villa’s Jack Grealish in recent weeks but the Birmingham native is available for the much more reasonable price of £8m in fantasy. Grealish’s England teammate Jadon Sancho also made a big money move over the summer as he joined Manchester United from Borussia Dortmund for £73m. The exciting wide player is listed as a midfielder in FPL and is available for £9.5m. The deadline for Gameweek 1 is today (Friday) at 6.30pm. If you miss the deadline, don’t worry. The Killarney Advertiser League will be open to entries for the first few of weeks of the season. Killarney Advertiser League ENTRY CODE: sjjox7

Breen and Nagle seek to impress in Belgium This weekend’s Ypres Rally Belgium will have a significant bearing on Craig Breen and Paul Nagle’s efforts to secure a fulltime drive in the World Rally Championship next season. The Killarney man and his Waterford driver are on a part-time programme with Hyundai Motorsport this year and share the third Hyundai i20 Coupe with Spanish driver Dani Sordo on selected events. So far this year they have tackled the Artic Rally Finland, Rally Croatia and Rally Estonia. Sordo has used the car on the other four rounds and has been selected for next month’s Acropolis Rally Greece. Breen and Nagle are chasing a full-time drive in the World Rally Championship next year and are linked with another team for 2022.

However, a result in this weekend’s Ypres Rally, which got under way on Friday morning, could help their bargaining power with their current employer. And the pair won the last edition of the Ypres Rally when it was a Belgium Rally Championship counter in 2019, at the wheel of a Volkswagen Polo. Neither Breen or Nagle are willing to discuss their future plans, instead concentrating on the job at hand this weekend. “Ypres is one of the events I really like the most,” Breen said. “I’ve been lucky enough to do it quite a few times across my career, and last time I was there in 2019 we managed to win the rally. “It’s definitely one of the most interesting and specialised rallies you’ll ever do. On paper, it seems to be a strange profile of event but when you’re in the car it’s an amazing challenge. At pretty

much every junction, the surface is a little bit different; it’s an event I really look forward to and it’s a rally worthy of World Rally Championship status.” This weekend’s Ypres Rally Belgium will

be Nagle’s 89th start at ‘world’ level. A full season next year will take him to over 100 starts at the sport’s highest level. He began his WRC career with Killarney driver Donie O’Sullivan in 2004.

GAMES: Well done to our players who won the Kerry Community Games U12 soccer final with Killarney.

Killarney Legion GAA U14 GIRLS: Our U14 girls came up short on Sunday evening against a physically stronger and bigger divisional side from Kenmare. Our young ladies went in at half-time with a very hard fought two-point lead. But an impressive third quarter by the Kenmare District side proved the difference (outscoring us 3-5 to 0-1). But to our girls credit they battled on and outscored the opposition in the final quarter. Unfortunately the damage was done in that third quarter with the gap too much to make up against a much stronger and bigger outfit, with the Kenmare girls running out worthy winners on a scoreline of 7-10 to 5-7. Great credit to this group of young ladies who were competing in Div 4 last time out, to come up a divi-

sion and get to a final in a division with two strong divisional teams is great progress and a great sign for the future. U13 BOYS COUNTY LEAGUE: Our u13 boys were in County League Phase 2 action at Direen this evening. Our WHITE team were first in action where they hosted Kilcummin in a key Division 9 clash. The visitors were coming off a big win against Kerins O'Rahillys last week and Legion have been unbeaten this year so no surprise that the game was very open from the throw-in. A big second half from the Legion boys who battled to the end saw them win the tie by 2 points. Legion 5-13 Kilcummin 5-11. Our GREEN team hosted Churchill in their Division 2 fixture. Legion were first on the scoresheet but found it hard to get clean possession to our forwards in the first half. Churchill raised a green flag after a period of pressure as heavy showers made for tricky conditions. The Legion boys, missing a few regulars and with three U11 boys called up, improved in the second half and created a number of goal chances. After a number of goal line clearances and great chances spurned, Legion got the goal they deserved and pushed hard for one more which didn't come before the final whistle despite further Legion pressure. Well done to the lads on their fighting spirit but plenty to work on in training. Legion 1-3 Churchill 1-6. Thanks to all the parents for supporting the lads.

Despite that poor first half, Fossa did not give up and put in a huge effort in the second half to limit Stacks scoring opportunities and create some well worked scores of their own. Fossa drew second half, and with great teamwork won the final quarter, but Stacks had done enough to win in the end. Thanks to all U11 players who took part.

Glenflesk GAA LOTTO: Next draw will take place in Glenflesk Hall on August 23. Jackpot will be €5,200. Thank you to all who support our lotto and to our sellers. COUNTY LEAGUE DIV 6A FINAL: Glenflesk B were victorious in a hard fought Division 6A final with local rivals Rathmore B at Kilcummin GAA grounds last Sunday. Glenflesk fired to an early 5 point to nil lead aided by some fine link up play from Danny Lucey at centre forward. Rathmore got a few points to settle down and came more into the game as the half went on. Emmet Finnan's strong run led to a goal before half time to extend Glenflesk's lead again. The second half was a scrappier affair with hard tackling continuing from the first half. Both teams traded points early on before scores became hard to get as both defenses were playing well. Another strong run from Emmet Finnan led to a good point for Glenflesk. Both Kevin and Tommy Bowler swapped some fine points. Rathmore's Dean Fitzgerald cooly slotted home a penalty towards the end to put 3 points between the sides. Glenflesk held on to win the Division 6 title on the first occasion they fielded a B team in the competition. Final score 1-15 to 1-12. U13 COUNTY LEAGUE: Glenflesk 5–10 Listowel Emmets 0–3. A great start for Glenflesk U13s in phase two of the County League as they have won their first two games, following up a win over Ballymacelligott, by overcoming Listowel with another impressive display. After the teams had reached the first water break level, with Adam Hobbs triple save the highlight, Glenflesk took over after play resumed. Firstly Patrick O Riordans high ball in found the net, with Diarmuid O Sullivan putting pressure on the goalie. O Sullivan was then first to a rebound off the goalie and found the net with his left foot shot. Points from Liam O Brien and O Sullivan left Glenflesk seven points up at the break. They then added a third goal early in the second half, after a buildup that started in the opposite corner of the field. Eventually O Brien used the outside of the left foot to fire home the goal that put Glenflesk out of site. Two more goals were added by James Kelly, and strong defense denied Listowel any chance of getting back into the game. A hugely impressive performance was delivered by the team this evening. De-

fensively the tackling and anticipation of where the ball was going was top class. The movement of the ball up field was also sharp, with both foot and hand passing being used with great accuracy.
