Killarney secures major German travel conference | By Michelle Crean

EXCLUSIVE

The largest tour operator from Mainland Europe to Ireland, German operator DER Touristik has announced this week that it will host its prestigious annual travel academy in Killarney, next year.

NEW CAMPAIGN: Comedian Chris O’Dowd, pictured with Sean O'Mahony (Faha Court Hotel) and his daughter Aoife, took part in the new ‘Social Spin’ service launched online this week.

Driving home for Christmas

A Killarney pub will reach millions of homes this Christmas – starring TV comic Chris O’Dowd – when it features in a television and online video promoting a new rural drive-home service ahead of the festive season. | By Sean Moriarty The Faha Court Hotel is one of two Kerry pubs to offer the ‘Social Spin’ service where punters at the bar can be driven to and from the pub by a team of volunteer drivers on rota. O’Dowd spent the two days driving customers to and from the Faha Court and his interaction with locals will be the focal point of both the social media campaign and the RTE documentary. Social Spin is the brainchild of Faha Court owner Sean O’Mahony who wanted to do something about the decline of rural Ireland and find a way around new and more stringent drink-driving laws. Earlier this year, with the help of the Vintners Federation of Ireland (VFI) and Guinness distributor Diageo, Sean set up the new campaign and a pub in Causeway soon followed. The Kerry pilot scheme could be rolled out nationwide in the New Year and will be the subject of an RTE documentary which will be aired in early 2020. O’Dowd has offered up his driving skills to support a new pilot initiative and, as a result, he was in Killarney last Thursday and Friday to record the promotional

video which will be broadcast on social and traditional channels in the run up to Christmas. The first airings of the video appeared on the Guinness and VFI’s social media platforms on Wednesday. “We have to respect the new regulation but no one seemed to care how they would effect rural pubs and no politician was coming up with a solution,” Sean told the Killarney Advertiser. “I went to a Kerry Vintner’s meeting with my idea and they told me they would help in every way. At this point Causeway came on board.” Social Spin has seen more than 70 volunteer drivers throughout Faha and Causeway sign up to get behind the wheel of newly bought community cars to drive people to and from the pub so they can enjoy a night out without drinking and driving. “This is the first pub in Ireland to do this, other schemes exist but they are community run, not by a pub,” Sean added. “It ticked all the boxes for Diageo and I got great support from my local rep, Fionnuala Dwyer. We hope to bring all the stats from our first year to a feasibility study in Dublin where we will look at bringing this to other areas.”

Killarney beat off challenges from a number of other top destinations to host the October 2020 event. It was held in Cuba in 2019 and in Finland in 2018. The congress is DER Touristik’s annual event and will take place over three nights. Around 300 top German travel agents, influential travel journalists and senior managers from DER Touristik – are expected to participate. As well as generating valuable off-season business, giving the local economy a significant boost during a traditionally quieter time, the annual travel academy always helps boost German visitor numbers to the host destination in subsequent years.

“The decision by Der Touristik to hold its 2020 travel academy in Killarney is a real vote of confidence in Killarney and Ireland and is testament to the strong appeal of Kerry and the island of Ireland as a ‘must see’ destination for German holidaymakers,” Minister for Tourism and Sport, Brendan Griffin TD, said. “With around 300 travel professionals expected to attend, this event will provide us with a wonderful opportunity to showcase Kerry and Ireland as a destination with a wide range of things to see and do, particularly in the shoulder season months. It will also deliver longer-term benefits for Kerry and Ireland as a whole.” Kevin Keogh, Senior Vice President Sales and Marketing for Der Touristik, said they are delighted to come to Killarney. “As the market leader for tourism from Germany to the island of Ireland for well over 50 years, DER Touristik is delighted to bring its 300 hundred top travel agents to Ireland for our 2020 Academy and to encourage them the discover the destination.”

New cinema takes shape on Park Road Construction of the new cinema on Park Road, which will feature five screens, is progressing and will be open by summer 2020. The new development, a two storey entertainment facility consisting of an arena, four screens and restaurant, modified access, car parking and site development works, is being built on the site of the former Torc Great Southern Hotel but not everyone in town is welcoming the new development, with many voicing their concerns that it’s changing the face of Killarney’s skyline, and is built too close to the road with not enough parking. Some suggestions have been to add a bowling alley, indoor paintball or indoor trampoline facility, which they say the town needs. The development, by Torcbridge Ltd., is being built by the Anderson family who own several multi-screen cinemas across the country including the complex in Tralee. Planning was originally turned down by Kerry County Council but was later overturned by An Bord Pleanala.

The company is currently building new cinemas in Shannon, Roscommon, Tullamore and other locations. The Killarney development will feature five separate auditoriums including one that can seat 300 people. “We are excited to bring our new concept Omniplex cinema to Killarney in summer 2020,” Mark Anderson, Omniplex Director, said. “Killarney Omniplex will provide a different cinema experience than normal showcasing the latest technological advancements including 4K digital laser projection, guaranteeing crisp, clear and bright picture on-screen as well as Dolby ATMOS sound in our giant MAXX screen and the most luxurious cinema seating available, anywhere.”

Killarney Credit Union reports a strong financial year Killarney Credit Union (KCU) is reporting a strong financial year with over €140 million in assets – and €45m available to lend in 2020. | By Michelle Crean The credit union, which held its 2019 AGM on Wednesday evening in The Mangerton Suite Gleneagle Hotel, has grown its membership by 1,319 in the past 12 months. Savings have also increased to €121.5m, while the credit union has provided €1.3 in loans each month to the local community. The credit union has been very active during 2019 with the launch of new agri

loan product in March, a €10m collaboration with 16 other credit unions in Ireland with local fintech company Fexco. In October, it launched its current account service for members which is proving very popular. While Killarney Credit Union has enjoyed a strong financial year it is faced with a challenging economic environment, especially with increased levies, low investment returns and decreased borrowing. It is important that the

credit union continues to make responsible and prudent decisions to further strengthen the credit union. As a result, Killarney Credit Union will not be paying a dividend to its members this year. “Having enjoyed a strong year in 2019, we are now very much focused on the future,” Mark Murphy, CEO of KCU said. “We are working hard to ensure that we will further roll out enhanced services for our members and meet the demand for different services and products. We see great opportunities for the credit union to grow and strengthen for our members in the coming year and this will be our priority.” While KCU has a membership of

34,000, only 20 percent of members actually borrow from them, he added. “In the past year, we have seen our loan book fall by 1.15 percent, as such lending is a core aspect of the business and we would encourage everyone to consider the credit union for their lending needs.” Killarney Credit Union joined with other credit unions in Ireland in winning the CXi award for customer experience for the fifth consecutive year. “Working together with our members we will remain a cornerstone of the local community, and weather the current challenges we face in relation to increased levy payments.”

Local group pleads over parking issues | By Michelle Crean A local disability access group is this week calling on the public to be considerate and remember others when parking in town for Christmas shopping.

Latest Ballyspillane incident not linked to on-going feud | By Sean Moriarty Killarney Gardaí say that latest incident in Hazelwood Drive, Ballyspillane is not linked to an on-going feud in the estate but it could be linked to a separate personal dispute. In the early hours of Wednesday morning emergency services were called to a house Hazelwood Drive after the front door was set alight. Gardai later confirmed that petrol was used to start the fire. A rock was also thrown through a window beside the front door and a car

parked in the driveway of the house was also damaged. Garda forensic officers spent all day Wednesday examining the scene. So far, no arrests have been made. “We are continuing to investigate,” Superintendent Flor Murphy told the Killarney Advertiser. “There are no arrests yet but it is not believed to be linked to the current feud. The information available to us is that it may be related to another personal matter.” Supt. Murphy appealed to the public to come forward with information, especially regarding people or vehicle movement in the area between 2am and 4am on Wednesday, December 11.

Mary O’Shea from the Killarney Access Group, which liaises with Killarney Municipal District Council on access issues throughout the town of Killarney, says Christmas time is stressful enough without blocking access for those with disabilities. The group was formed over 20 years ago to support people with access issues to help make Killarney become a more accessible town for everyone. This week, she’s pleading with the public to be mindful where they park in town as blocking footpaths and roadways leads to huge issues for wheelchair users and others. “We are appealing to everyone to be more considerate when and where you park this Christmas in Killarney and to be aware of others who may not find negotiating the busy streets so easy,” Mary, who spoke to the Killarney Advertiser this week, said. “We need everyone’s support to make sure the town is accessible to all this Christmas and throughout the year. “Please do no park your car in a designated disabled parking bay if you or your passenger does not hold a disabled parking permit. Parking on footpaths

PARKING PROBLEMS: Killarney Access Group is this week pleading with the public to be careful where they park during Christmas as it could block footpaths and roadways.

creates huge hazards for so many people who have to go out onto the road to get around the car. Street furniture presents further obstacles on an already busy thoroughfare, bikes on footpaths are lethal and wheelie bins blocking our pedestrian routes are a massive inconvenience for so many people, not just for people with disabilities but also for elderly or frail people and people with buggies and small children.” Killarney Municipal District Council have always supported the group, practically and financially though the Community Support Fund provided by Kerry County Council and together, she added.

Festive fundraiser for Ian O’Connell A unique festive fundraiser in aid of the Ian O’Connell Trust saw 50 members of the Belief Boutique Gym travel the equivalent of four times the Ring of Kerry – indoors – last Saturday. | By Sean Moriarty

Match first then party after!

Each Christmas the popular town centre gym organises a fundraiser for local charities and this year’s chosen benefactor is in aid of the inspirational Killarney teenager who is confined to a wheelchair following a mountain biking accident two years ago. Members of the gym took turns – two to three minute stints – on rowing machines, static bikes and skiing machines. During the course of the day an estimated 50 members completed a distance that was equal to going around the Ring of Kerry four times or a total of nearly 720kms. “Two years on from my accident and they are still people fundraising!” Ian told the

Killarney Advertiser. “I am so grateful for the efforts of these people. I called in for about two hours, it was great craic and plenty of music too.” Co-owner Josie O’Shea was delighted with the turnout on the day. “The goal was to complete the Ring Of Kerry four times in under three hours. This was achieved in 2hrs 40mins,” she told the Killarney Advertiser. “We had a great turnout of local Killarney people and members. Local businesses sponsored prizes, there was a DJ and festive treats from The Shire. Ian and his family also came in for the event and it was great to have him there.” The gym has set a target of €2,000 and their efforts, so far, exceeded that target by €100 with more donations expected to come in.

It’ll be footballs at the ready tonight (Friday) as two teams go head to head to win their games – but the real winner will be a local school. | By Michelle Crean Killarney Celtic FC are not only preparing for their annual Christmas party tonight in The Killarney Avenue Hotel bar at 9pm – they’re also planning their third annual charity match for Holy Cross Mercy School Rainbow and Sunshine Rooms. Kick-off is 7pm with donations at the gate and all are welcome to come along, Jane O’Donoghue, Killarney Celtic FC ‘Football For All’ Co-ordinator, explained. “For the past two years Killarney Celtic FC have done a charity match for Focus Ireland and South West Counselling, the night of our Christmas party. This year

we are doing it for the Holy Cross Mercy School Rainbow and Sunshine Rooms.” There will be two games; a women’s game Mercy Christmas Trees vs Mercy Christmas Elves and a men’s game All Blocks vs Falvey’s Hit Squad. The women’s teams are made up of teachers and SNAs from The Holy Cross Mercy School and the men’s teams are made up of past Killarney Celtic players. The match balls have been sponsored by Trevor O’Donoghue Photography and the Moore family, Howth, Co. Dublin. “We will be doing our annual awards for Senior A, Senior B, Youth Player of the Year and Club Person of the Year.”

Weather delays Micro Track completion | By Sean Moriarty Poor weather conditions are hampering the final stages of the Killarney Micro Track project.

Deer viewing park under consideration

Heavy rains and cooler temperatures are preventing contractors from laying down the final surface on the running track. While it has been ready for the final track laying since September it is now expected that the surfacing won’t take place until early next year. “The track surface requires a dry stretch of weather over a week and also no frost or icy conditions, to allow for the prop-

er settling down of the track,” funding co-ordinator Jeremiah Griffin told the Killarney Advertiser. Despite the delays in surfacing the running track, plans are advancing and already community groups in Kerry have pre-booked the site for events in 2020. "The scheduling has already begun for different groups within the community for example Killarney Valley Athletic Club is planning for the New Year and the Kerry Stars are already scheduling activities,” added Griffin. “The Monastery School is also looking forward to taking on the ‘daily mile for primary schools’ as soon as the track is ready.”

A dedicated deer viewing park and associated car parking facilities are under consideration by Killarney Municipal District. | By Sean Moriarty The deer grazing area opposite the entrance to Muckross House is a popular deer spotting area but Mayor Cllr Michael Gleeson says he has received expressions of concern from members of the public as cars stopping at the location cause traffic safety concerns. At the recent Killarney Municipal District meeting Cllr Gleeson said: “As the many motorists who stop and park by the side of the Killarney to Molls Gap roadway to view the grazing deer in the fields across the road from the driveway to Muckross

House & Gardens sometimes create a traffic hazard, I ask that the Council would develop a lay-by where cars could be safely parked while the occupants feast their eyes on the elegant animals.” A Council official said that matter would be looked into. “The need for such a facility will be examined in the context of predicted level of use, likely cost and road safety. If the findings indicate that the project is feasible the proposal will be forwarded to the TII for its consideration,” he said. HAVE YOUR SAY: Does Killarney need a dedicated deer viewing park? COMMUNITY SUPPORT: The 2020 Community Support Fund was launched this week by Mayor of Kerry, Cllr Niall Kelleher, and Chief Executive of Kerry County Council, Moira Murrell. The fund, which is now in its sixth year, has supported over 1,500 projects since 2015. Photo: Domnick Walsh

Cultural centre officially opened The refurbished Killarney Arts and Cultural Centre “ANAM” on East Avenue Road was officially opened today. The building was revamped at a cost of €240,000 with half of the cost being provided by the Department of Arts,

Heritage and the Gaeltacht and the other half by Kerry County Council. It was officially opened by Minister of State at the Department of Transport, Tourism and Sport, Brendan Griffin TD, Cllr Niall Kelleher, Mayor of Kerry, and other local dignitaries.

VIEWS NEWS Mr Healy was a huge influence in Killarney ON

THE

x

The death took place this week of the iconic school principal Tim Healy of Countess Road, who helped the old Tech, the Vocational School Killarney, become one of the great schools of its time in the late 1970s. Anne Kenny Lucey, gives a snapshot of the period. Tim they called him. A whole generation, boys and girls he helped grab the tide and break free of historical moorings. He was “Mr Healy” too, especially to the generation of girls who broke out of the traditional roles. The Vocational School Killarney, still known as ‘The Tech’, was a mixed school with a ratio of at least two to one in favour of the boys. It was one of the few mixed schools in the country bringing us onto a new century, a new world. The old town was well represented Cleeney to Allman’s to the Villas, Marian’s to Daltons and Woodlawn, and outlying places too like Cappagineen and Clonkeen, Ironmills, and Lismongane. He strode the yard between the science and metalwork room where the larger than life Joe Treacy’s booming voice bellowed louder than the welding. He never heard the shouting by Joe, but then he rarely saw those of us skulking around the prefabs, after being put out of class for laughing too much either. It was still the 1970s. The school had only just got a uniform. The first Leaving Cert was 1975. Revolution was in the air - there was even a strike - by students. If Mr Healy wanted to see you, he could! And you would be brought in for a pep talk about life, about not throwing away your prospects. They were words you remembered long after. Looking back, well dressed and precise, he was probably in the same mould as

He embraced the new world, caught it by the scruff of the neck, and brought it into the school yard and out again Gay Byrne. It was clear he enjoyed his audience, his teachers as well as his students. He persuaded some of the best to join his staff, knocking on doors.

INFLUENCE

He embraced the new world, caught it by the scruff of the neck, and brought it into the school yard and out again. We got talks and addresses from everyone. He would arrive back in September, sometimes tanned, telling us how on the continent they did not throw rubbish around like Ireland, and that we needed to be more European. Languages were important. Maths was important. We were important. The world was one of possibility. No one was better than anyone in the emerging nation: “No-one in Ireland

Columnist ANNE LUCEY gives her take on happenings in Killarney, Kerry and beyond

is very far from the bothán,” was a favourite saying. On freezing days he would “visit” the table tennis shed or cross furiously to Chapel Lane both areas where disputes were being settled. He was not slow to show a bit of temper but only when necessary. He was always at the end of the stairs, calling for “ciúnas” and order while the school filed out of the red and yellow hall at the end of a day and the hand bell tolled by big John the caretaker. Or worse, he could appear outside the high side gates causing panic among the townies taking the short cut. But he was there too for the soft days, driving nails in the timber of the St Patrick’s Day school float and driving the likes of me to Dublin to collect a prize for an essay at the French Embassy accompanied of course by the much loved Mrs Brosnan, the French and English teacher from Connaught Avenue and New Street. And his beloved and perfect Peg who would be very generous in her advice about decorum. Peg and he made a great team, a generous team in time and advice for an emerging generation, the first of “O’Malley’s Children” as the poet Theo Dorgan put it, referring to the first generation of free secondary education.

WORKING TOGETHER

It was a very close knit staff, we realised this. Spouses were part of it. It was a very town school too. There were those who wanted to be left to themselves and were allowed for it was a place of character rather than caricature. This was something that struck us when people from other schools would join, or we had sub-teachers who didn’t quite get it - we did not have the same attitude to teachers or to classmates

Why is Killarney being ignored by politicians? We must congratulate Tralee. Minister of State Brendan Griffin has managed to pull half a million out of just €15.5 nationally for the town in his constituency with the biggest voting base.

Tralee will be among 31 destination towns to be allocated the funding, which was announced on Monday morning as part of the Fáilte Ireland Destination Towns Scheme, and the money will help build their tourism

industry physically and structurally. Tralee will also be promoted overseas and locally by the tourism agencies. I am hoarse from asking why Killarney is being ignored by politicians and state agencies alike. I put it down to a lack of

The late Mr Healy.

these new people brought or spoke about. Belittling and put downs was not really “our” way. Many Post Leaving Certs and Post Inter Certs arriving upstairs for the intense shorthand and the click clock of the typing machines were struck by the strange egalitarianism of the place. I taught for a brief while at the new school, and I taught at other schools, so called model schools with posher principals - but no school ever struck the same note as the puddle filled yard and the cold prefabs where students would sit on the storage heaters to keep warm or wait to be encouraged with a soft word and a smile, or a cross one when it was needed, in a unity of purpose by Mr Healy. By then, the late ‘80s was a changed Ireland where new schools built meant a changed location too, and in places which felt less at the centre of things. It would in any case have been too much to expect to meet again in any era that unique kind of harmony and hope led by the great conductor of it all in the New Street school of the 1970s. Tim Healy, Mr Healy. Ní bheidh do leitheid ann aris. Mr Healy, died peacefully at home surrounded by his family, and was buried in Aghadoe Lawn Cemetery following Funeral Mass on Wednesday. He is survived by his wife Peg, daughters Joan and Helen, son Tim and grandchildren. clout - but also a lack of anyone roaring loudly for the town. The sad truth is that unless you have Government TDs and ministers sympathetic towards it, as Jimmy Deenihan or John O’Donoghue were towards Killarney - you are going nowhere. It is a great shame Jimmy lost his seat. They are regretting his loss around Listowel too, I hear.

Builder retires from Construction Federation of Ireland after 17 years The builder behind some of the best known hotels and housing estates in Killarney has called time on his chairmanship of the Kerry branch of the Construction Federation of Ireland.

HISTORY BOOK: Local historian Conor Doolan has published a book on the history of Kilcummin. Photo: Michelle Crean

New book traces untold stories of Kilcummin

A new book on the stories of the Kilcummin area, the first of its kind to be published in 20 years, was launched by author Conor Dolan last night (Thursday) at Kilcummin GAA club. | By Sean Moriarty Doolan, a well-known local writer and historian, has compiled the book entitled ‘Kilcummin: Folk, Land and Liberty’. At last night’s launch Dolan, and former Irish Examiner journalist local man Donal Hickey, discussed the process and content of the book to a packed audience. Conor believes the publication will prove vital for genealogists, the Irish diaspora or anyone tracing family history. The book’s main focus is the period between the 1700s and 1920s. “It is a combination of trade directories, information from old maps, newspaper and military archives and it paints a picture of Kilcummin in that period of time,” Conor told the Killarney Advertis-

er. “There has been great interest from abroad.” Popular former parish priest of Kilcummin, Fr Tom Looney, was guest of honour at last night’s launch. “Fr Tom assisted in the choosing of the title of the book,” he added. “I spent a lot of time in Killarney Library and the Local History and Archives department at Kerry Library in Tralee. I thank all the institutions and individuals who assisted me during my research.” The evening concluded with music by local musician Thady O’Connor who sang ‘My Killarney Rose’, a song written by the author’s grandfather, Daniel J Hannon of Brosna and written in praise of his grandmother Peggy Guerin who hailed from the Reanlougha area of Kilcummin.

Sean Clifford, of Tralee-based Keel Construction, spent the last 17 years as chair of the local branch. His firm was one of the biggest employers in Kerry and was responsible for some of county’s landmark construction projects. “I met some wonderful people in that time,” he told the Killarney Advertiser. “Normally it is a two or three year term, but with the collapse and everything, nobody wanted the job.” Although retired from active construction since 2005, his last major project being the redevelopment of the Ross Hotel in Killarney, he maintained his leadership of the local CIF branch until last week. Mr Clifford set up Keel Construction when he was just 20-years-old and over the course of the next 50 years he was responsible for some of the biggest projects in the county. “It came in three cycles,” he added. “First we had the council houses, when local authorities were building their own houses in the 1970s, it moved on to schools and finally hotels.” Keel Construction built Ballyspillane Estate in Killarney, which this year celebrated its 40th anniversary. Although Keel did not build any local schools the firm was responsible for the extension to Presentation Secondary School in Tralee and Killorglin Vocational

school through the 1980s and 1990s. The boom years of the late 1990s and early 2000s saw major hotel development across the county, particularly in Killarney. His firm built the Sheen Falls Hotel in Kenmare, Randles Hotel and Molly Darcy’s, which is now known as the Muckross Park Hotel, amongst others. His final major project was the redevelopment of the Ross Hotel on the East Avenue Road in 2005 before the crash in 2006. “It came down like a shutter,” recalled Sean. “It still has not really recovered and people and small builders have no business going to a bank looking for money to build – they simply won’t give it to them. The bigger firms were able to bring in investors and that is why they were able to keep going.” New regulations like a potential ban on burning fossil fuels meaning that new builds will be without chimneys are some of the key issues that will affect construction all over Ireland and that is one of the reasons why he felt it was time to relinquish the chairmanship of the local CIF branch. “Since the crash, no one really wanted the job,” he added. “But we all knew these new regulations were coming on stream, the time is right to hand the role over – a younger person is needed.”

FINAL PHASE: Sean Clifford, (Chairman, Kerry Construction Industry Federation Branch) retired last week after 17 years at the helm. A special function was held in the Killarney Park Hotel to mark his retirement. Photo: Don MacMonagle

Choose Piccolo for the perfect pizza With a truly authentic taste of Italy – Piccolo Pizza on Beech Road is the place to pop by – freshly cooked instore or choose a takeaway option. The Neapolitan pizzeria really is a funky little spot right in the heart of Killarney and a popular choice as their pizza dough is the true taste of Naples, made fresh daily instore by their Italian Pizzaioli, Luca Iacomino, who is a third generation pizza chef. There’s 20 choices in their pizza range with the option of three sizes, a 9, 12 and 14 inch pizza – depending how hungry you are or how many you’re sharing with – the most popular being the Tricolore, Parma, Calzone and

Vesuvius, ranging in price from €8.50 to €17, with Gluten Free options available. Enjoy the ambience in Piccolo, for lunch or dinner on Friday, Saturday and Sunday from 1.30pm to 9.30pm with its contemporary feel which is enhanced by the unique hand painted walls created by award winning artist Lorraine McDonnell. Eat in, opt for a takeaway, home delivery or just order a slice. And not only that, but Piccolo, who opened in March 2016, serves hot and

cold drinks as well as wine which has been specially selected to compliment your pizza selection. And if eating in, there’s the option of bringing your own beer. “The ingredients are all Italian,” Manager Luca, told the Killarney Advertiser. “We make our own dough with our own recipe using Italian flour. The difference is the taste, the dough is so soft, a truly authentic Neapolitan pizza. All the meat and cheese is from Italy too. Our vegetables are sourced from local suppliers.” Piccolo have been very busy delivering pizza orders to local businesses who are enjoying a pre-Christmas lunch in

and it’s proved extremely popular so they’ve decided to add it as a permanent feature to their business. Kids parties are also part of the fun in the pizzeria, Luca added. “We’ve been very busy with the children’s parties. A minimum of eight children can come in and help make their own pizza. It’s great fun.” Gift vouchers are available and would make an ideal Christmas present and there’s free WiFi instore. 5 Beech Road, Killarney Phone: (064) 663 8626 Email: piccolo.killarney@gmail.com Facebook: @piccolokillarney Instagram: @piccolo.killarney

GoFundMe for Firies man who died in Australia | By Sean Moriarty The family of well-known Firies man Crohane O’Grady who passed away suddenly in Australia last Saturday have praised the efforts of Kevin Bell Repatriation Trust in getting the remains of their late father back home. Crohane died while on an extended visit to his daughter Bernie who runs a farm near Cohuna, about three hours north of Melbourne. His final wish was to be buried alongside his parents in Abbeyisland Cemetery

near Caherdaniel. In recent years the 63-year-old spent three months every year in Australia so he could be with his grandchildren, but this year he became ill. He was hospitalised in Australia late last month and was diagnosed with leukaemia and unfortunately succumbed to the illness. The family have set up a fundraising page online to help get Crohan home, GoFundMe: ‘Bring Crohane home’, with the excess money going back to the Kevin Bell Repatriation Trust, a charity which helps repatriate bodies of loved ones from all over the world.

“He went there every year, he loved the sunshine and spending Christmas with his grandchildren,” his daughter Theresa told the Killarney Advertiser. “This year he went a few months early as he stood for his granddaughter’s confirmation and was preparing to return home around the time he got ill.” Crohane’s remains are due in Dublin Airport around 7pm tomorrow (Saturday) ahead of a wake in Firies on Sunday evening. His is survived by his children Theresa, Bernie and Brendan, former wife Phil and partner Christine Barket.

SAD PASSING: Crohane O’Grady passed away in Australia last week. His family have praised the efforts of the Kevin Bell Repatriation Trust in getting him to Kerry.

The MacGillycuddy Reeks region will benefit from almost €1 million as part of a new Sustainable Agricultural Plan announced for the region this week. | By Sean Moriarty Minister for Agriculture, Food and the Marine, Michael Creed TD announced the details of the new scheme at Cronin’s Yard at the foot of Carrauntoohil, on Monday. The project is one of 23 European Innovation Partnership (EIP) projects co-funded by the Department under its Rural Development Programme 20142020. It is led by South Kerry Development

€1m for sustainable farming in the Reeks Partnership CLG and includes local farmers, personnel from the National Parks and Wildlife Service and the Institute of Technology Tralee, MacGillycuddy Reeks farm advisors, Kerry County Council and local community group representatives. The aim of the project is to develop practical, achievable actions and innovative solutions to address the issues

facing farmers in the MacGillycuddy Reeks. This will be achieved through the development of a four-year locally led agri-environmental pilot scheme, to restore, preserve and enhance the biodiversity of this unique Natura 2000 area. “By having locally-designed and led schemes enables greater flexibility in responding to the particular environ-

mental challenges in different areas,” said Minister Creed at the launch. Praising the involvement of local farmers in the project he added that the contribution they are making through their actions will improve not only their own local environment and communities, but through dissemination of the outcomes of this project they will play an even larger role throughout the country.

Spa Club legend enters Munster Hall of Fame | By Sean Moriarty Former Spa, East Kerry player and two-time All-Ireland winner Donie O’Sullivan has been inducted into the Football Hall of Fame by Munster GAA at its awards night in Limerick last Saturday night. In a Senior career that spanned from 1962 to 1975, the Spa clubman was a vital cog in the Kerry fullback line with over 100 appearances in the Green and Gold including 35 Championship appearances – all but one them as a starter – with the Killarney teacher having played in six All-Ireland Senior Football Finals. An All-Ireland winning captain, a two time All-Star, a dedicated Club and District player and above all a brilliant defender, the Tiernaboul man holds a special place in Kerry GAA folklore.

“It was very nice to meet rivals and friends from our playing days, some there were older than myself,” the 79-year-old told the Killarney Advertiser. “Opportunities to meet up like this are few and far between these days.” Off the back of a very successful run by his district East Kerry, he won four Kerry Senior Football County Championship titles in 1965, 1968, 1969 and 1970. O’Sullivan, who was a teacher in the Green CBS in Tralee, got to captain Kerry twice. While it was a Munster Final defeat at the hands of rivals Cork in 1966, four years later O’Sullivan climbed the Hogan steps to accept Sam Maguire for the Kingdom following a 2-19 to 0-18 win over Meath. He played in six National League Finals, winning all six including 4-in-a-row between 1971 and 1974. In 1971 he was Kerry’s first and only All-Star.

Fundraiser to remember Kilcummin GAA man

21

Killcummin locals are planning an evening to remember one of their own – while also raising funds for charity. | By Michelle Crean On Sunday, December 29 family, friends and neighbours of the late Dermot Moynihan, Ballinamanagh, who died earlier this year, are planning a card evening in the Klub Bar at 4pm – with funds going to the oncology unit in University Hospital Kerry. Dermot was a major part of Kilcummin GAA and is sorely missed, his friend Tom ‘Ulick’ O’Sullivan, who is organising the event, told the Killarney Advertiser. “Dermot was a big man in the club. He held many posts over the years, he was dedicated to the GAA.” Not only was Dermot a family man he was also a GAA man, he added. He was a member of the 1973 team that won the East Kerry Championship,

O’Donoghue Cup, County Junior Championship and Division 2 league. He was secretary of the club in 1975, 1977, 1988 and 1989, field committee secretary 1980 to 1985 during the club’s first major development. He trained the U21s to win their first of the four-in-a-row East Kerry titles in 1996 and trained the senior team in 1995 and 1996. He was the club’s delegate to the county board for 25 years only stepping down two years ago where by all accounts he was so respected that when Dermot spoke, everyone stopped and listened. A Vice-President of both Kilcummin GAA Club and the East Kerry Board, at the time of his death, he also served a time as Vice chairman of the E.K.B. “It’ll be a great day, we’ll have spot prizes as well. It’s €10 entry.”

Councillors divided on smoky coal ban Environment Minister Richard Bruton is expected to announce an extension of the ban on burning smoky coal in a number of towns including Killarney, but local Councillors are divided. The Government is expected to announce that towns with a population of between 10,000 and 15,000 will be included in extension of the current Low Smoke Zones. Cllr Donal Grady believes that this is another covert tax being imposed on people, especially those who can’t afford to buy the more expensive smokeless coals or convert their houses to take a gas supply. “I burn turf myself and will continue to do so unless someone tells me I am going to jail for doing it,” he told the Killarney Advertiser. “This Government seems to spring one new tax after another on to the people every week. Look at the aircrafts flying overhead – I am not saying people should not fly – but we need to

tackle this all together as one.” Mayor of Killarney, Cllr Michael Gleeson, says he has been burning smokeless coal for some years and that he attempted to bring a motion before the council back in 2015 but was overruled as Council colleagues felt that the extra cost was too much of a burden for some people. However, he cited health improvements in other areas, particularly Ballyfermot in Dublin, where smokey fuel was banned some 30 years ago. “I asked the Council in 2015 for Killarney to be included in a smoke free zone but some of my colleagues demurred over a cost of €2 more a bag,” Mayor Gleeson told the Killarney Advertiser. “The Government should subside the extra cost to those most vulnerable. Killarney is unique as it sits very low, almost in a bowl, and when you get a climate condition called inversion the smoke gets trapped. There has been a marked reduction of bronchial and heart diseases in Ballyfermot for example and the health of the people should be above the Government.”

"It’s a mess but we will be back" Healy-Rae shop to remain closed indefinitely It took nine fire extinguishers to battle a blaze at Michael HealyRae’s Kilgarvan shop on Monday morning – but the damage was so severe that the shop will remain closed indefinitely. At around 9am on Monday morning Michael was alerted to a fire in the shop when his wife Eileen called to his adjoining office. However, the intense fire, which was

caused by an electrical fault, was hard to get under control with Michael brought to University Hospital Kerry as a precaution due to the inhalation of fumes. “The shop is unfortunately still closed, Kilgarvan Post Office is also closed,” Michael told the Killarney Advertiser. “It’s a huge loss to the community and I want to apologise to my loyal customers – it’s the first time it’s closed in 30 years. It’s very upsetting for our customers, staff

and suppliers at this critical time of year. The whole thing is a mess. We’re working very hard pulling out all the stops to get it back up and running. I’m grateful to the emergency services including Kenmare Fire Service, and everyone for their support, especially Juliette and my wife Eileen, everyone who has helped us. We will battle on and we will be back.” This week he missed attendance at the Dáil and is recovering at home. “I didn’t go to the Dáil this week. I took in a lot of fumes and to be honest I’m still a bit sick with it.”

Killarney praised for anti-racism stance Mayor of Kerry, Cllr Niall Kelleher, and the people of Killarney have been praised for their efforts to stamp out racism in the town. On Monday over 2,000 people from over 100 different countries received their certificates of naturalisation, and took the oath of fidelity to the Irish State. The ceremonies at the Gleneagle INEC in Killarney were presided over by retired High Court Judge Bryan MacMahon.

This was the 145 such ceremony since its inception in 2011, but only the second outside Dublin. About 127,000 people have gained citizenship to Ireland. The ceremonies were delayed from their original September 30 date due to a citizenship-related legal challenge against the State.

On this date several racist stickers, saying: ‘You’ll Never Be The Irish!’ appeared on lampposts on the Muckross Road, the main approach road to the INEC where the ceremonies took place. Monday’s event was also attended by the Minister for Justice, Charlie Flanagan, and Minister of State for Equality, Immigration and Integration, David Stanton. Stanton praised the efforts of the people of Killarney and their swift response in removing the offending signage in

September, action that was led by Cllr Niall Kelleher, Mayor of Kerry. “He [Minister Stanton] commended the swift action of the people of Killarney in removing these stickers and commended the way we all condemned the action,” Cllr Kelleher told the Killarney Advertiser. Polish top the list of top 10 nationalities with 317 Poles granted citizenship on Monday. Britain was second with 260, and 184 Romanians made up the third spot.

Killarney runner donates €2,755 to MS Ireland | By Sean Moriarty A Killarney runner who successfully completed last month’s New York Marathon has donated €2,755 to the Multiple Sclerosis Ireland South Kerry branch thanks to the generosity of his supporters.

MARATHON MAN: Conor O’Leary celebrates finishing the New York Marathon.

Conor O’Leary, who is the well-known manager of the leisure centre in the Towers Hotel, competed in the November 3 race to raise money for the charity after his mother, Mary, passed away from the disease in 2011. His decision to run New York was influ-

enced by his wife Ann who is originally from the Bronx area of the city. In October 2018, he completed the Dublin marathon in a time of 4hrs and 38mins but he bettered this time in New York. “I did complete the marathon as hoped in a similar time to my previous, under 4 hours -3hrs 57mins - and am now searching for my next marathon,” he told the Killarney Advertiser. “I want to acknowledge the kindness and generosity of people and the contribution it allowed me to pass onto MS Ireland South Kerry Branch. I am humbled by people’s generosity and kindness.”

Guides give generously to Kerry charity Part of the Girl Guide promise is to care for others and on Saturday they proved that by donating to one local charity. | By Michelle Crean

Killarney District Girl Guides, which includes Ladybirds, Brownies, Guides, Senior Branch and Guiders, held their Christmas celebrations on Saturday with a Christmas fun day in Killarney Community College. The generosity and caring for others ethos was unveiled on the day when they donated toiletries, sanitary products, toothbrushes etc., to Dignity Packs Kerry, Ann O’Connell explained. “Part of the Guide Promise is to help other people, so to honour this, IGG Killarney District do a service project every year. This year Dignity Packs Kerry was the chosen charity because they provide

male and female packs to people of all ages in reduced circumstances, helping to maintain privacy and dignity in a time of need. It is a wonderful service and one which IGG Killarney are proud to be associated with.” All branches from Ladybirds, age five to seven, Brownies, age seven to 10, Guides age 10 to 14, and Senior branch aged 14 up, are eager and happy to donate to causes such as Dignity Packs Kerry, she added. “It teaches the girls compassion, generosity and selflessness.” Dignity Packs Kerry thanked the girls for their hard work and dedication saying their kindness will make a difference to the lives of those less fortunate.

Tractor winner presented with keys

“This must be a hoax” - that was the first reaction Margie Mannix gave when she received a phone call from members of Killarney Valley Classic and Vintage Club (KVCVC) telling her she had won a tractor in the club’s annual prize draw. Every year the local club organise a fundraising raffle for local charities. This year they raffled a 1979 Ford 2600 tractor that was used by the Killarney Great Southern Hotel between 1979 to 2007. It was a familiar sight around the streets of Killarney during this time as it was used to transport furniture and other equipment between the hotel and its now closed sister premises the Torc Great Southern Hotel on Park Road with well-known local gardener Con Lyne behind the wheel. After a restoration project organised by the club the tractor was raffled to raise funds for Meningitis Ireland and the Killarney Micro Track Project.

Margie, a keen supporter of the Killarney Micro Track Project owned the first ticket out of the hat, ironically after buying one of the first tickets – before they even went on sale. She was presented with the keys earlier this week. “This must be a hoax was my first thought,” she told the Killarney Advertiser. “I had forgotten I had even bought the ticket. When I heard there was another fundraiser for the Micro Track I just gave a work colleague money for a ticket before they even went on sale. I don’t know what to do with it, it is over 30 years since I was up on a tractor – I would need to be shown how to drive it.”

WEDDING

A winning year for Michael and Eilish! From winning the All-Ireland Junior Final in Croke Park earlier this year to tying the knot – it’s been a major year for Michael Moriarty and his bride Eilish O’Brien.

WEDDING OF THE WEEK

30

Michael, from the Gap of Dunloe son of Carmel and the late Dode Moriarty, is better known for wearing the No 1 jersey for Beaufort and Mid Kerry and with Beaufort winners of the All-Ireland Junior Final in Croke Park in February - the Cup took pride of place at the top table. However, it didn’t take the limelight off stunning bride Eilish who dazzled in her beautiful wedding gown on the day. They couple married in Muckross Church on November 22 and held their reception in Muckross Park Hotel, the same church and hotel where Eilish’s parents Timmy and Sheila O’Brien, Gortdromakerrie, Muckross, who are sadly now deceased, were married 52 years ago. Bridal party consisted of their son and daughter, Molly and Daniel Moriarty, Eilish’s nephew Oisin O’Brien and Michael's niece Aoibheann Moriarty as flowergirls and pageboys. Eilish’s sisters Joan O’Sullivan and Kathleen O’Shea, and lifelong friend Mary

O’Donoghue were bridesmaids. Bestman was Michael's brother Jerimiah Moriarty, while groomsmen were Donal Hartnett who travelled from New York with his wife Meaghan to be with them on the day, and Michael's first cousin Wayne Moriarty was third groomsman, and travelled from London with his wife Sheila. Local photographer Ian Cronin captured the special moments from their day which included a trip to Muckross for photos. “Ark light provided our entertainment for the night and had the crowd dancing until the early hours,” Eilish told the Killarney Advertiser. “We enjoyed the following day in Kate Kearneys in the Gap of Dunloe. It was a super day.” The couple then took some time out from their hectic schedules and enjoyed a mini moon in Inchadonny.

Holly was born on September 4 to parents Kevin and Caroline Doherty. She is the younger sister to four-year-old Oisin. The ceremony took place at The Prince of Peace Church in Fossa ahead of a family gathering at the Dromhall Hotel. Proud grandparents Con and Christine Hickey and James and Mary Rose Doherty were guests of honour at the celebration. Oisin’s uncle Desmond Doherty made

It was a glitzy night out for the who’s who of the tourism industry on Thursday night last at the annual Irish Hotel Federation Ball which took place in the Aghadoe Heights. And in her speech, Bernadette Randles, the current Chair of the Kerry Branch of the Irish Hotel Federation (IHF) told those in attendance that the tourism industry in Kerry contributes €600 million to the Irish economy and is directly responsible for approximately 10,700 jobs in the county. The industry also creates a further 1000 jobs in the supply chain and allied sectors like food wholesalers and taxi drivers. Ms Randles, owner and operator of two major hotels in Killarney, praised the people that make tourism happen in Kerry. “It does not matter if you are the bar man, someone like myself trying to make my hotel work or the volunteer who helped organise a parade or an

event,” she told the Killarney Advertiser. “It is all about the people and it is the people that make the experience.” Guests celebrated another great but challenging year in tourism and look forward not just to a new year but a new decade of welcoming visitors to our county. “In my speech, I wanted to keep things positive, it was a great night but I did not want to talk about Brexit,” she added. “Every year and every decade we are faced with new challenges but we have to create positivity. Kerry is one of the biggest tourist destinations outside Dublin but we work hard at it. It is all about people, staff are valuable, our people are our main assets.”

GARDEN MAGIC

Gardening - By Debby Looney

How to take care of your festive plants I am not sure whether it is a reflection of the bad whether that people are inside more, but houseplants are of great interest to readers currently! I have been asked specifically about Poinsettias and Anthuriums. Poinsettias are synonymous with Christmas, and I wonder how many end-up in a compost bin immediately afterwards. This is because they do not like the shock of a change of environment. However, it is possible to keep them as a permanent houseplant, and with a little knowledge and care, they can survive for years. Poinsettias like to be kept well-watered, but hate being waterlogged. They do not need feeding while in colour. They do not like drafts or extremes of temperature, so keep away from radiators. They also like a bright position. If you want to keep them for another year, cut back to about six inches in spring and start feeding with a regular fertiliser.

They can be re-potted and placed outdoors over the summer, preferably in dappled shade and in August they can be cut back to encourage branching. Then, from September to November the plant needs 12 hours of total darkness to flower. This can be achieved by placing it in a dark room for 12 hours or covering with a box. It is crucial it gets no light whatsoever. It likes a warm temperature of around 20 degrees during the day, but cooler, around 14 degrees, at night. This should encourage colourful bracts once again. Anthuriums are also a festive plant often forced into flowering at this time of year. They like a very bright position, but not direct sunlight. They need a light peat based potting medium and need to dry out slightly between watering. They are, like orchids, rainforest plants, and need a high humidity to thrive. A cup of water placed near it will help maintain humidity.

Barraduff woman appeals for support This week the Irish overseas development agency Trócaire launched its Christmas Appeal with an urgent call from Barraduff local Martina O'Donoghue for people in Kerry to support innocent families caught up in wars and conflicts around the world. “Where Trócaire works, millions of people have known nothing but war and have lived through constant conflict since they were born,” Martina said. “Trócaire is working to protect them and keep them safe. We are asking the public to support us and make sure these innocent people aren’t forgotten this Christmas.” This Christmas marks the 50th anniversary of John Lennon and Yoko Ono’s iconic War is Over ‘peace’ campaign. Trócaire has reimagined the campaign with a 2019 ‘War Is Over Christmas appeal’ supporting families who are living in war zones around the world. According to Martina, families fleeing conflict urgently need food, shelter and

healthcare this Christmas in many of the countries where Trócaire works. “The figures are frightening. In Syria, Somalia and Gaza alone, where Trócaire works, an estimated 19 million people have known nothing but war – children have lived in conflict zones since they were born. “Donating to Trócaire’s Christmas appeal will help people born into some of the longest-running conflicts in the world,” Martina said. “We are grateful and thankful for the support we receive from the people of Kerry each year.” More information is available from www.trocaire.org or by calling 1850 408 408.

Tralee allocated €500k Destination Towns funding Tralee has been allocated €500,000 in funding by Fáilte Ireland to develop its potential as a tourism ‘destination town’.

A special event to remember loved ones lost to suicide will take place in Tralee this Sunday.

The funding is through Kerry County Council as part of the €15.5million ‘Destination Towns’ initiative launched earlier this year by the National Tourism Development Authority. Supporting Tralee Town Centre as a gateway to the visitor attractions of the surrounding area, the Destination Towns project will improve accessibility and orientation in the town. Using key buildings, signage, interpretation and maps, visitors will be encouraged to explore the historic laneways and lesser-known heritage sites and attractions of the town. The process of identifying the towns that receive funding through the Destination Towns scheme commenced in mid-2019 and was led by the Local Authorities in consultation with Fáilte Ireland. Brendan Griffin TD confirmed on Monday that every county in Ireland will benefit and the first round of allocations, including Tralee, will take place from January. “The investment awarded to the towns

across Ireland today reinforces the Government and Fáilte Ireland’s commitment to growing the tourism sector and the benefits it brings to regions throughout Ireland. I’m delighted to see Fáilte Ireland and the Local Authorities continuing to work hand-in-glove to ensure towns nationwide can fulfil their tourism

potential.” Fáilte Ireland’s Destination Towns scheme is funded under the Government’s Project Ireland 2040 strategy with the aim of driving sustainable growth in the Irish tourism sector and higher revenue and job creation around Ireland.

Sharon Roche, who lost her son to suicide eight years ago, has been organising the event every year and is inviting everyone to come along. It will take place at 3pm at the Motor Tax office with refreshments served afterwards. “Once again, we will remember all lost to suicide on December 15 - which has now become an annual event,” Sharon told the Killarney advertiser. “We want to particularly invite those who have lost someone this year. This is a lovely event - very moving and emotional, but also comforting for the families and loved ones as you know you are not alone in your loss. Others share in your grief and understand the burden of sadness that you carry.” A little decoration or bauble is placed on the tree and will sparkle there throughout the Christmas season, she added. “You are all very welcome to join us and we will share a cup of tea afterwards. Please tell those who are not on social media of the event and invite them to come along. We look forward to your company on the day.”

Trump in Old Moore’s 2020 predictions It may be a stable of an Irish Christmas but it is unlikely that President Trump will find a copy of Old Moore’s Almanac 2020 under the tree this Christmas. Just as well really as the famous book does not predict a bright future for the current leader of the United States of America. Famously accurate over the 256 years it has been in publication, the book attempts to predict a whole host of world happenings in

the year ahead. According to predictions for 2020, the book’s publishers tell us that Trump will not get re-elected in next November’s deciders. You have to look back as far as 1981 to find the last occurrence of a US president failing to secure a second term. On that occasion, Jimmy Carter lost out to a landslide victory to Ronald Reagan. Carter, to his credit, went quietly, in his concession speech, he admitted that he was hurt by the out-

come of the election but pledged "a very fine transition period" with President-elect Reagan. Old Moore tells us not to expect the same from Trump. The book warns of violent outbreaks between Trump’s Republican followers and rival democrats. It won’t worry us here in the Kingdom, Old Moore says Kerry will be the All-Ireland football champions after successfully predicting Dublin’s five-in-a-row this time last year.

Death of environmental campaigner David Bellamy The Conservation Foundation this week announced the death of Professor David Bellamy OBE, its co-founder and President. The South Londoner, who died on December 11, wrote, appeared in and presented hundreds of television programmes on botany, ecology, environmentalism and other issues. His television series included ‘Bellamy on Botany’, ‘Bellamy's Britain’, ‘Bellamy's Europe’ and ‘Bellamy's Backyard Safari’. Along with David Shreeve, the pair founded the Conservation Foundation in 1982 and since then they have been working to inspire, enable and celebrate positive environmental action. Mr Shreeve released a statement on Wednesday. ‘Sadly, I have to report that David Bellamy died this morning. David and I worked together on a variety of projects in a various places since launching The Conservation Foundation in 1982. He was a larger-than-life character who be-

Ireland continues to top the list as the most generous country GoFundMe’s 2019 Year in Giving Report released this week proudly revealed that over 120 million donations have now been made on the platform worldwide raising over €9 billion. Once again Ireland has topped the list as the most generous country in the world with the highest number of donations per capita, 341,026 donations so far this year to be exact. Since the platform first went live in Ireland almost 1 million donations have been made across the country. Galway comes up trumps as the most generous city in the country with Dublin,

and then Limerick following closely behind. Surprisingly, or not, our favourite day to give is Friday and most campaigns are started at around 9pm on a Tuesday night. “It’s great to see Ireland keep the top spot as the most generous nation on GoFundMe, highlighting something very special about this country and its character,” GoFundMe CEO Rob Solomon said. "When it comes to social fundraising, the distance, background, or relationship to those in need doesn’t matter - our donors and organisers span the globe and have different needs, concerns, and interests."

Wild Colonial Boy statue unveiling this Sunday A new monument to Castlemaine’s most-famous son, Jack Duggan, the Wild Colonial Boy, will be unveiled in the Mid-Kerry village on Sunday. Jack Duggan is believed to have left the village in the 1880s and made his way to Australia. According to the popular folk song ‘The

Wild Colonial Boy’, Duggan arrived in Australia where he lived a Robin Hoodstyle life – robbing the rich to feed the poor before being eventually gunned down by police. On Sunday, The Wild Colonial Boy Committee will unveil a full-size bronze monument in his honour in the centre of Castlemaine.

Discovery of 19th century ship graffiti at Derrynane House A series of 19th century graffiti and other writings have been found on a wall at Derrynane House, the home of The Liberator Daniel O’Connell. The graffiti was discovered by an officer of the National Monuments Service while undertaking inspections of the archaeological sites within the estate. The graffiti comprises of over 15 ship representations, signatures, numbers

and doodles, written on to and inscribed into the plasterwork within a number of buildings on the estate, in particular that of the Summer House. Some of the writing may potentially be from the hand of the Liberator himself. Along with ship representations, fishing scenes are also depicted, with nets and fish caught within them, and they provide a visual record of traditional fishing methods of 18th – 19th centuries.

Indulge your nails for the party season Magical Christmas

Manicures and pedicures are a luxurious treat for those parts of the body that work so hard for you, but can so often be left neglected. Spa paraffin manicures and deluxe spa jacuzzi pedicures represent the ultimate indulgence in nail care. However, with three main types of manicures it can be confusing. So let me explain which is which. The first is a full deluxe manicure at the nail salon done on your natural nails and normally includes removing any existing nail polish, cleaning, cutting and conditioning your cuticles, filing and shaping your nails, applying moisturising hand lotion and preforming a hand and arm massage and dipping your hands into a bath of warm liquid wax paraffin which is very beneficial for hydrating the skin and nails but also very therapeutic for anyone who suffers from arthritis. While the warm paragon is on, the hands are usually placed in heated mitts. After this is removed and the manicure pedicure is finished with base coat for protection,

5

two coats of colour of your choice and a top coat to seal it all in with a high shine. A Shellac manicure is everything above but without paraffin. At the end, instead of regular polish, a shellac or Gelish three week polish is applied. This has to be dried under the UV lamp, leaving it dry before leaving the salon. Unlike regular polish it has to be removed in the salon after two to three weeks. Gel nails are everything that a manicure is but they add on a false nail extension for length. It takes an hour and half to have this treatment done. It’s ideal for those who have weddings or parties coming up and would like to have beautiful nails, or people who are nail bitters. Finally, deluxe pedicures are ideal for anytime of the year. Pedicures start with sitting into a deluxe back massage chair, popping the feet into hot water in a jacuzzi foot spa. This helps to soften the hard skin and relax the feet. Toe nails are cut, cuticles are drilled back and removed. Feet are exfoliated then massaged and finally polish is applied or shellac, whichever is preferred.

Loreto pupils spread the word on Lyme Disease

Next year’s event will coincide with the annual 4th of July festival in Killarney ensuring a bumper weekend for the town. The Ring of Kerry Charity Cycle brings together 10,000 participants each year, making it Ireland’s largest oneday charity event. Since its inception 36 years ago the cycle has raised almost €16 million for 150 charity organisations. Next year’s event is limited to 8,000 participants. Each year, cyclists will be raising funds for six carefully selected charities in

Ireland. “We’re encouraging everyone to experience and participate in this year’s Ring of Kerry Charity Cycle in some way – whether it’s participating in the cycle, volunteering, working with the charities involved or supporting the event on the day,” Bridget McGuire, Chairperson for the Ring of Kerry Charity Cycle, said. Cyclists can choose to fundraise for their selected charity through the online fundraising platform, Everyday Hero, or sponsorship cards. The Ring of Kerry Charity Cycle official merchandise includes a jersey or neck buff, both of which can be pre-ordered online once registration opens on www.ringofkerrycycle.ie.

Local school pupils took some time out of the classroom on Wednesday to spread the word about the dangers of Lyme Disease. The girls, representing the student council of Scoil Bhríde, Loreto National School, were invited to give a presentation to the Healthcare Trainee Class in Fitzgerald Stadium, Killarney. “The pupils prepared a PowerPoint presentation in which they spoke about the prevalence of Lyme disease in the Killarney area and the history behind the school’s Junior Entrepreneur project entitled ‘Tick Kits’ in 2018 for which the school was awarded the title

of ‘Community Champions’,” Principal Brian O’Sullivan told the Killarney Advertiser. “The pupils answered questions about the project and distributed ‘Tick Kits’ to all present. The ‘Tick Kit’ aims to make everyone more aware of what a tick is, how to remove it safely and precautions to be taken. The school is still working to spread awareness of Lyme’s disease and Tick Kits are available to purchase from the school.”

Field trip for foodie students Transition Year students from St Brigid’s Secondary School took a trip out of the classroom recently all in aid of research. The teens headed to the Killarney Food Producers Market on Market Square behind Quills to look at how food producers get their products ready for sale. The girls carried out some field research

for their upcoming Christmas market next Wednesday in the school. They learnt about how the producers developed their products for point of sale, sales promotions and personal selling and asked questions about the best ways to display and sell their own products. They sampled some of the items that were available and which were all produced locally.

HEALTH & FITNESS Advice - By Brian Foley Brian is available for advice and fitness consultations, Call 087 403 0894 or email info@activate.ie • www.activate.ie

Adjust the dial for the festive season It’s such an amazing time of the year, filled with wonder and magic and time spent with our loved ones. It’s also the perfect time to say I’ll just take a few weeks off from the gym, from your goals, from your habits and routine. Starting fresh after you lose your way is a really comforting thought. That’s probably why New Year’s resolutions are so popular, especially following the indulgence-fuelled holiday season. But here’s the problem: the pause-button mentality only builds the skill of pausing. Whether it’s tomorrow, Monday, next week, or even next year, hitting that imaginary pause button gives you some sense of relief. It allows you a little respite from what can be a really tough slog. This perceived relief is compounded by the illusion that if we “start fresh” later we can find the magical “right time” to begin. Let’s accept that life has no pause button. The key lesson here is that, like it or not,

the game of life keeps going. There’s never going to be a moment when things are magically easier. You can’t escape work, personal, and family demands. Nor can you escape the need for health and fitness in your life. The point is to keep going. Nowadays I like to think of my fitness and nutrition efforts as a dial. There are times when you’ll want to dial efforts up, and times when you want to dial them down - but you never want to turn the dial off completely. The important lesson is there’s a big difference between tuning your dial and turning the whole thing off. Week 3 Action Items: • Eat at least five servings of colourful fruit/veg. - Eating more colourful fruits and vegetables improves nutritional quality. - Helps you feel more satisfied with food because of the fibre and nutrient content. - Plan your meals for the week ahead - And write up a shopping list based off those planned meals.

GO WILD: A new downloadable cookbook raising funds for men affected by prostate cancer, 'Go Wild in the Kitchen' features Killarney chefs. Pictured were: Bobby Kerr, Lorraine Toner (Irish Cancer Society) and Bobby Power.

Go wild for a new cookbook

A new downloadable cookbook in aid of the Irish Cancer Society features recipes from Killarney chefs to support men affected by prostate cancer. Wannabe cooks will be able to whip up a storm of tasty dishes with the new downloadable cookbook, priced €5, which is available to buy online. ‘Go Wild in the Kitchen’ is the brain child of Bobby Power, creator of Go Wild Magazines, who brought together a collection of delicious recipes from chefs based along the Wild Atlantic Way. As most of the chefs featured in the book are male, he used the opportunity to raise awareness of prostate cancer, and raise money for the Society’s cancer research and free support services for those affected by the illness. Over 3,600 men are diagnosed with prostate cancer in Ireland each year. The book features over 30 recipes and stunning photography from three distinct areas along the Wild Atlantic Way; the North Coast, Mid-West and South-

ern region. Mouth-watering dishes on the menu include glazed Bourbon steak, hot smoked salmon and crusted pork loin to wow with at dinner time. Tasty creations come from top local chefs in Killarney’s Heights Hotel, Parknasilla, Daroka, Croí and Smugglers Inn to name just a few. The book was launched by broadcaster Bobby Kerr, a cancer survivor. “Every year over 40,000 people hear the dreaded words ‘you have cancer’. In 2015, one of those people was me,” he said. “Thankfully years of cancer research had developed smart ways of treating the disease and this ultimately saved my life.” For more information or to download the book visit www.cancer.ie/GoWildCookbook.

SANTA VISIT: Visiting Santa Claus in his Christmas Cabin at the Killarney Outlet Centre last weekend were Patrick, Darragh, Shauna and Kaitlin O'Riordan with parents Shane and Mary O'Riordan. Santa will be at his cabin on the ground floor of Killarney Outlet Centre again on Saturday, December 14 and 21, and on Sunday 15 and 22 from 1pm to 6pm each day.

New Ford Puma set for January launch The new Ford Puma is expected in Killarney Autos’ showroom by early January. The Puma introduces a new chapter in Ford’s design identity with charismatic styling cues including distinctive wingtop mounted headlamps and athletic, aerodynamic lines. Compact crossover proportions deliver a raised ride-height for a confidence-enhancing driving experience, and support class-leading uncompromised luggage capacity of 456 litres. The new car joins Ford’s expanding lineup of SUV and SUV-inspired crossover models in Europe, including the Fiesta Active, Focus Active, EcoSport, Kuga, Edge, and the all-new Explorer Plug-In Hybrid. SUVs now account for more

than one in five Ford vehicles sold in Europe. New technology includes Local Hazard Information, which can inform the driver of hazardous situations in the road ahead before they become visible to the driver or vehicle sensors. Puma is also the first vehicle in its segment to offer hands-free tailgate access and Lumbar Massage Seat comfort and convenience technologies. “Our customers told us they want a compact vehicle with stand-out looks that also delivers solutions for everyday living. The result is our new Ford Puma – charismatic, practical and offering technologies from massage seats to mild-hybrid powertrains,” said Stuart Rowley, President, Ford of Europe.

First Škoda with plug-inhybrid drive revealed Škoda raised the curtain from their new Superb flagship back in early October and are now adding further momentum with the arrival of their first plug-in hybrid called the Superb iV. At a glance the iV may seem indistinguishable from any other new Superb; however, it conceals an electric motor with a power output of 85 kW (115 bhp), capable of travelling up to 62 km on pure electric power. A combination of an electric motor and a petrol engine provides a total range of up to 930 km.

Apart from some subtle exterior changes, the main differences to the SUPERB iV are technological. The SUPERB iV, like all hybrid arrangements, has two power sources. When both power units are working simultaneously, the SUPERB iV has a combined power output of 160 kW (218 bhp). The electric motor acts as an additional boost, providing dynamic driving performance and a 0 to 100 km/h acceleration time of just 7.7 seconds. Liam Lynch Motors in Farranfore is the local Škoda dealer.

COFFEY

In loving memory of Eileen Buckley, late of 12 St. Brendans Place who died on 14th December 2001.

In loving memory of Eileen Buckley, late of 12 St. Brendan’s Tce, Killarney who died on 14th December 2001.

In loving memory of Kathleen Bartlett, Late of Barraduff, Headford, Killarney, Who died on the 13th December, 1991.

In loving memory of Dan Coffey, Late of Carker, Scartaglin who died on the 10th December 2013, aged 58.

18 years have passed Since that sad day, You closed your eyes And slipped away,

On a quite December morning, You heard the angels call, You took the hand of Jesus, And quietly left us all.

Remembering you is easy We do it everyday Missing you is the hardest part It never goes away

Your life was one of kindly deeds, A helping hand for other’s needs, Sincere and true in heart and mind, Beautiful memories left behind.

You left us quietly and made no fuss, But broke the hearts of all of us No longer in our lives to share But in our hearts You are always there.

In a world full of people, We sometimes feel alone, For part of us went with you, The day God called you home.

To hear your voice To see your smile To sit with you And talk for a while

Sadly missed by your brother Jim, Sister-in-law Margaret, nieces Imelda, Orla and Martha.

Sadly missed by Donie, Joan, Gerry and family.

Always loved and missed by your loving son James, daughter-in-law Eileen, grandchildren and great grandchildren.

Would be our greatest wish Today, tomorrow Our whole lives through Mom we will always love And remember you.

A loving heart, a secret thought, A silent little tear, Are all the things that keep you close, When Christmas time is here. For you were someone special Dad, One of the very best, The pain and grief was hard to bear, When you were laid to rest. Our bond was sadly broken, And for now we are apart, But time, they say, can hep to heal, Over every aching hearts. END GAME Football season to conclude with rescheduled O’Donoghue Cup final EAST KERRY CHAMPIONSHIP: FINAL

_________________________________________________________________________

Legion

Dr Crokes

Killarney Legion v Dr Crokes Sunday at 2.15pm Fitzgerald Stadium If a drawn match is like kissing your sister (not my words, a popular Americanism) then what does that make a postponed one? As early as Friday night, rumours swirled around Killarney that the O’Donoghue Cup final could fall victim to the oncoming Storm Atiyah and as the winds swirled through town the morning of the game, the East Kerry Board decided to postpone the fixture in the interest of public safety. My understanding is that the players

were not best pleased with the call but a red weather warning is a red weather warning; it’s hard to fault the board on this occasion. I’m not going to lie, it’s challenging enough to preview the same game two weeks in a row. (I was tempted to just print the same article again.) But I’ll give it my best shot. One interesting angle is how the postponement might affect each team’s respective line-ups. For Legion, key player

James O’Donoghue was reportedly a doubt for last weekend’s fixture as he picked up an injury in his side’s semi-final victory over Gneeveguilla. Whether or not the Kerry star would have been fully fit is unclear but Legion will be hoping that the extra week off will have given him ample time to recover. As for Dr Crokes, Jordan Kiely, David Shaw and Fionn Fitzgerald are longerterm concerns but the extra seven days could aid the return of established half back David O’Leary. Sunday is likely to be cold and wet but nothing on the scale of last weekend, so we’ll get it played this time with the help of God. II don’t think I can handle previewing it three weeks in a row.

LEGION TEAM (POSSIBLE): Brian Kelly; Darragh O’Doherty, Podge O’Connor, Cian Gammell; Jonathan Lyne, Damien O’Sullivan, Rob Leen; Shaun Keane, Jack O’Neill; Billy McGuire, Jamie O’Sullivan, Denis Sheahan; James O’Donoghue, Pádraig Lucey, Conor Keane. DR CROKES TEAM (POSSIBLE):

Shane Murphy; John Payne, Mike Moloney, David Naughton; David O’Leary, Gavin White, Brian Looney; Johnny Buckley, Daithí Casey; Micheál Burns, Gavin O’Shea, Michael Potts; Tony Brosnan, Mark O’Shea, Kieran O’Leary.

Football at this level is a job and players need time off You have to admire the O’Donoghue Cup. It just refuses to quit. After the cancellation of last Sunday’s final due to adverse weather conditions, the season will now end for Legion and Dr Crokes on December 15. | By Adam Moynihan I’ll stop short of blaming the GAA or the East Kerry Board for Storm Atiyah but it’s hard not be frustrated at this stage. Just like last year, and the year before, our footballers are not going to get a proper break before the next season kicks off again in January. Legion actually began training for the 2019 season in December of 2018 so they’ve been on the road for 12 full months. As for Dr Crokes, due to their involvement in the 2018/19 Munster and All-Ireland Club Championships (which ran until March 17), they basically never stopped training at all. This, to my mind, represents a major player welfare issue and I find it incredible that in this modern era of heightened sensitivity and awareness when it comes to physical and mental health, the GAA think that it’s acceptable for players to be playing and training for 12 months of the year.

EAST KERRY BOARD

Last year I spoke to a number of players about the O’Donoghue Cup and how it was being run off and, to a man, they were all quite critical of the board. Personally I would agree that the staging

of our district competitions could be improved upon. Actually, I would argue that one of the competitions, the Super League, shouldn’t be staged at all. Dr Crokes’ participation in the Munster Club Championship is often cited as the main impediment to completing the East Kerry Championship in a timely fashion. This year, the Crokes didn’t qualify. Yet here we are again, deep into December, and little has changed. I suppose it’s easy to direct our ire at the East Kerry Board because right now it’s their competition that we’re waiting on, but that wouldn’t be right. There’s a far bigger picture here. The current GAA schedule, at both intercounty and club level, is an absolute mess. There are simply too many competitions and the only way of fixing it is by adopting a blank canvas approach to the entire schedule. Sadly, the GAA seem to disagree.

I put up a tweet on Sunday saying: “Legion v Dr Crokes has been called off ‘in the interest of player safety’. If the GAA really cared about player welfare there wouldn't be football in December in the first place.” If you were to go through the likes the

tweet got you’d recognise a lot of the names. Crokes players, Legion players, club players from up and down the country, current Kerry players, recently retired Kerry players; GAA stakeholders who understand the ways in which the current schedule affects the lives of footballers, because it does or has affected their lives for years. And then you look at those who tend to take a dim view of comments like mine. It’s almost exclusively non-players; one gets the impression that many of these people would be delighted if the final of the East Kerry Championship took place on Christmas Day. Wouldn’t that be a nice tradition? Of course, everyone is entitled to their opinion, but is it possible that the players know what they’re talking about, seeing as how they’re the ones actually dealing with the problem year in, year out? Looking from the outside, as officers, ex-players and supporters are, it is perhaps difficult to appreciate how hard it is to be a Gaelic footballer in 2019. It’s not a pastime. These days, players are expected to prepare as if they were operating at a professional level. They have to adapt their diets. They have to do private gym sessions. They have to abstain from alcohol. They’re expected to put their team above all other considerations. As one coach told us, “you should be making excuses to come to training, not excuses to miss it”.

And all of these demands exist before a backdrop of fixture chaos, particularly at club level where you can go weeks and weeks without playing games, or even knowing when your next game might be.

RESPONSIBILITIES

Casual observers tend to picture your standard footballer as a young guy without a care in the world but players have girlfriends, wives, kids, full-time jobs, college commitments (often in a different county) and countless additional responsibilities that have to be managed around their other job: being a Gaelic footballer. And make no mistake, playing football at the level that we’re talking about is not a hobby. It’s a job. For many players, it’s more important than their nine-to-five, and it has a greater impact on their mental wellbeing. When things go to plan, sport has the power to elevate and energise. Unfortunately things don’t always go to plan and when that happens, sport also has the power to deflate and depress. The psychological strain that sport puts on players is far greater than many people realise, and we haven’t even addressed the physical demands, which are also intense. When you give yourself to a sport and to a team, you really do give all of yourself. Again, it’s not a pastime. It’s a job. And a hard one at that. Is it unreasonable to ask for some time off?

“If a Kerry player came out today, the dressing room would be his safe place”

13.12.2019

This week Adam Moynihan spoke to Kerry legend Darran O’Sullivan about inclusivity in the GAA and the prospects of one day having an openly gay intercounty footballer If you’ve been watching English soccer in recent weeks, you might have noticed some extra colours flashing around. The Premier League and Sky Sports are currently participating in the Rainbow Laces campaign, an initiative designed by equality charity Stonewall to help create more LGBT-inclusive sports environments. As part of the campaign, players have sported rainbow-coloured laces and captain’s armbands, rainbow-coloured welcome mats have been rolled out outside stadia and rainbow-coloured television graphics have been incorporated into all football programming, perhaps most notably directly below the score and time in the corner of our screens. The increased visibility appears to be having an effect. A poll carried out by Stonewall shows that 65% of the British public now believe that it’s important for anti-LGBT language to be challenged at live sporting events, a 7% increase on last year. Former intercounty footballer Darran O’Sullivan, who played for Kerry between 2005 and 2018, believes the GAA should follow the Premier League’s lead. “I think Rainbow Laces is a great initiative and it is something the GAA should be doing,” he said. “The GAA is extremely powerful and it's a very open, welcoming place at the moment. You have players who didn’t grow up in Ireland, people from totally different backgrounds, who are all welcomed. It’s very inclusive, and that’s the way it should be. “[Rainbow Laces] is a great way of encouraging players to be themselves. You have more and more players now who are not just going along with what you’d expect GAA players to be. Like other sports, the GAA has to move with the times as well and make sure that it’s more open, that you don’t have to be a stereotype to be a GAA player; you can be any type of person. “I think the GAA needs to move along, and they are quite open to these things. An initiative like the Rainbow Laces would go a long way. It would be a good thing for the GAA to do, even if it was only for one weekend a year.” The four-time All-Ireland-winner says he doesn’t recall homophobic language or anti-LGBT discourse ever being prevalent in a Kerry dressing

room, although he does acknowledge that times, and attitudes, have changed. “Maybe it was something that I just wasn’t picking up on. It was never really a topic in our dressing room. The one thing I will say is that over the years, I think fellas have become more sensitive to other people’s feelings and are more aware of other people than we would have been at the start [of his career]. “I think that comes with growing and having a bit more of an education around mental health. Players are more aware of the people around them. As the years have gone on and younger players – I suppose the more modern day players – have come in, fellas are a bit more aware that it’s not just players beside you, it’s people. If a fella is feeling a bit off, they take note of these things and they’re more open about talking.” Cork hurler Dónal Óg Cusack came out in 2009 but since his retirement in 2013 the GAA has had no other openly gay male players. Have things progressed enough for a gay Kerry player, if one existed now or in the future, to come out? “I don’t think there would be any problem with a player coming out in the GAA,” O’Sullivan says. “I think his teammates would be the first to stand around him and make sure he knows that he’s still the same person and nothing has changed. I think [in the dressing room] is where he’d get the most support. They’re the guys he spends four or five days a week with. They’re the guys who probably know him better than anyone else. That would end up being his safe place. “The GAA and Irish people in general, especially the younger generation, are a lot more open, a lot more understanding. A GAA dressing room would be a safe place for someone, somewhere they could feel comfortable to be themselves. “I think it would nearly be easier for a player at intercounty level to come out than at club level. At club level, it might be a bit tougher because someone might say something off the bat, in anger or in jest, and not think about the consequences. “At intercounty level with the media attention that’s on it and the professionalism of players at the moment, I think it would be a fairly safe place.”

Lakers back on home court | By Adam Moynihan

The Irish version of basketball’s greatest rivalry makes a return on Saturday night as the Lakers host the Celtics in Division 1 of the National League. Kerry is a long way from Boston or Los Angeles and neither the Scotts Lakers nor the Limerick Celtics can match the storied histories of their NBA counterparts, but nevertheless a healthy backand-forth has developed between the two since the Killarney club returned to the national stage in 2017. Last season, Seán O’Brien led the Lakers to a comprehensive 25-point victory over the Celtics in the league but Limerick got revenge by dumping the Lakers out of the cup at the quarter-final stage. St Paul’s bounced back with another league victory just two weeks

later but the Celtics quickly responded with another cup triumph, this time in the traditional Castleisland Blitz. This season, the Celtics put an early dent in the Lakers’ promotion hopes when 32 points from Spaniard Carlos Hortelano helped them to a 92-85 win on opening night. Shane McCarthy has led his side on an 8-2 run since, however, and the Lakers currently find themselves third, one win behind second place Fr Mathews. Limerick have had mixed fortunes thus far, winning five and losing six of their 11 games.

Lakers add second American to boost promotion chances Ahead of Saturday’s crucial home game against the Limerick Celtics, the Scotts Lakers have strengthened their squad by adding 6’2” American guard Xavier Talton. The Lakers are currently in third place in Division 1 of the National League and the club are hopeful that the acquisition of Talton, a former D1 college player at the University of Colorado, will boost their chances of promotion heading into the second half the season. Talton’s arrival brings the Lakers’ United States contingent to two and, due to league restrictions, he will have to split his minutes with fellow American Aaron Jackson. Teams in the Irish league are only permitted to have one American on the floor at any one time. With Jackson absent through suspension, Talton played 30 minutes in last weekend’s victory over the Limerick Sport Eagles and speaking to the Killarney Advertiser this week, head coach Shane McCarthy said he was pleased with the debutant’s performance. “Xavier only practiced once before the game in Limerick and he did really well,” McCarthy said. “He comes from a huge college in

Colorado. His team played in the Pac-12 conference which is one of the biggest in the country. He’s a 6’2” pass-first guard who can also knock down the three ball. He gives us a different look and allows Mick [McGinn] to work more off the ball also. He played against NBA standard guys every day in college.” The Colorado native is the Sterling High School record holder in points, assists, steals, games played and games won. He also played football and ran track. Talton was a major player for the CU Buffaloes throughout his time in Boulder and he fell just one game shy of equalling the team’s all-time record for appearances. He subsequently played professionally in Macedonia. Point of note: Xavier is pronounced ‘ex-ay-vier’. It’s a case of one in, one out for the Killarney club as summer signing Victor Martínez returns to Spain following an unsuccessful half-season in the black and white of St Paul’s.

The Lakers, who really can’t afford to lose any more games if they want to stay in the mix for promotion, are likely to hand a home debut to new American Xavier Talton.

EAGLES 66-84 LAKERS

The Lakers recorded a comfortable road win last Friday night as 21 points from Toby Christensen propelled them to an 18-point victory over the Limerick Sport Eagles at the UL Arena. The visitors established a commanding first half lead thanks to baskets by Xavier Talton, Mick McGinn, Mark Greene, Brian O’Neill, Carlton Cuff and Christensen and they didn’t let up in the

second as they held on for an emphatic result. Paul Clarke and Séamus Brosnan also found the target for the Lakers, who gave game time to youngsters Keelin Houlihan and Jack Corridan. The victory marked the Lakers’ second positive away result in a row following their impressive 81-94 win over Ulster University in Belfast.

CUP: Killarney Athletic veteran Shane Doolan. Athletic are hoping to advance to the Kerry area final of the Munster Junior Cup.

The Kerry District League kept their dreams of reaching the knockout phase of the Oscar Traynor Trophy alive with a vital 4-3 win over the Limerick District League on Sunday. Ashley Kelliher of Listowel gave Kerry the lead at Mounthawk Park when he latched on to Matt Keane’s flick on and when Keane’s Killarney Celtic teammate Wayne Sparling doubled the hosts’ advantage 10 minutes before the interval, The Kingdom were in cruise control. Limerick started the second half well, however, and a penalty by Shane Clarke brought them back into contention. Kerry quickly regained their two-goal advantage through Will Courtney but subsequent strikes by Kieran Hanlon and Clarke levelled matters with less than 20 minutes to play. Kerry needed all three points to stay alive in the competition and they snatched a dramatic victory late on when Killarney Athletic forward Courtney grabbed his second. The result in the one remaining fixture will now decide Kerry’s fate; if group leaders the Desmond League beat Clare, Kerry will advance as group runners-up. Any other result and Kerry will be out. That crucial tie will take place on January 4.

KERRY: Steven Bartlett, Ryan O'Connell, Kevin O'Sullivan, Shane Doolan, Stevie O'Mahoney, James Sugrue, Ashley Kelliher, Matt Keane, Will Courtney, Gary Keane, Wayne Sparling. Subs: Danny Roche and Stephen McCarthy.

WINNER: Ruairí Coghlan took first place in the junior race.

Killarney riders brave the storm in Watergrasshill On Sunday the Killarney cyclocross riders braved the storm to make the journey to Watergrasshill in Cork for Round 6 of the league and combined Munster Championships. In the U14 race, Donagh O’Connor took another podium with third place. In the U16 Eoghan Crowley took fifth with Luke Murphy again dominating the race. He rode away from the field comfortably and was not seen until the finish line. Murphy has raised the bar for all Munster riders in his category. In the B race, Michael Coghlan took sixth leaving him third overall in the league. All aforementioned riders were representing Killarney Cycling Club. Mark McGlynn took fifth place in the junior race while Ruairí Coghlan (Scott/ Quanta) took first. As well as winning the championship, Coghlan is also level on points with two others heading into the final round of the league.

In the main event of the day, Richard Maes (Strata3/velorevolution) led the race once again from start to finish. Maes travelled to Belgium last weekend to compete against the best riders in the world, only drop out due to mechanicals on both days. This time he beat out strong competition with a comfortable lead over pro rider Michael O’Loughlin (Team Wiggins) and this gave Richard the gold in the Munster Elites. Michael Lucey (Killarney Cycling Club) is showing great form and continues to improve on results, taking fifth. Patrick Clifford (Strata3/velorevolution) had his sixth win in the M40 category and took home a gold medal. John Crowley (Killarney CC) got third M50 so as well as getting bronze, he also sits second in his category in the league. The team prize went to Strata3/velorevolution with all three riders (Richard Maes, Patrick Clifford and Trevor Woods) in the top seven overall.

GOLD: Patrick Clifford picked up his sixth win of the season in Cork.
