Ian O’Connell: My Dad Is A Warrior Ian O’Connell was at the Ring of Kerry finish line to greet his father on Saturday and the heroic Killarney youngster was quick to hail dad Mike “a warrior” for completing the 175km challenge. In a statement on his Facebook page, Ian said that seeing his dad finish the Ring was a special feeling and one he won’t forget. “After taking on the challenge to try the cycle I told my dad every day he will complete it because it is all in the head,” the teenager said. “After sticking by me through thick and thin after my accident I can proudly say my dad is a warrior and I love him.” Ian was paralysed from the shoulders down when he fell from his bike in the National Park

last August. Since his accident, the brave Killarney native has inspired people the length and breadth of the country with his motto “If you can’t stand up, stand out”. A number of participants took part in the Ring of Kerry Charity Cycle on behalf of the Ian O’Connell Trust, a fund set up to help the O’Connell family with expenses such as modifying the family home. Anthony Cronin is one such cyclist who deserves special mention; he completed this year’s Ring of Kerry on a penny-farthing. In total, 15 charities are set to benefit from this year’s event. Over €15 million has been raised for 150 organisations since the inaugural Ring of Kerry in 1984.

The Man Who Bought Killarney (And Gave It Back To Us For Nothing) Words: Adam Moynihan You might not recognise the man in this picture, but you should. I have to confess my own ignorance here; I didn’t know much about him either until I read an article by local historian Damien Switzer in this year’s edition of Killarney Magazine, which was published a couple of weeks ago. The man pictured is John McShain, a multimillionaire American philanthropist who was born in Philadelphia in 1898. He took over his family’s construction business in 1919 and went on become one of the most successful builders of his time. When he was 59, McShain was part of a syndicate that bought Killarney House and Gardens (and later the 8,300-acre Kenmare Estate in Killarney, an area of town that included Killarney House, the Demesne, Ross Castle and Innisfallen from Lady Grosvenor). Two years later he bought out the syndicate, answering the age-old question, “How do you

buy Killarney?” in the process. So how did it come to pass that 8,300 acres of private property – the site of some of the most spectacularly beautiful scenery in the world – found its way back to the people of Killarney? It’s not exactly something you just give up for free out of the goodness of your heart. Unless you’re John McShain. In 1973 McShain and his wife, Mary, gave Innisfallen and its historic ruins to the nation. A few years later, they handed over their estate for a nominal fee on

two conditions. First: they wanted to live in Killarney House for the rest of their lives. And second: they insisted that the land would forever be part of Killarney National Park. John died in 1989 and Mary in 1998. Killarney House and Gardens, located in the heart of the town, has since been redeveloped and it has quickly become one of the most beloved spots in the entire park. Killarney is an incredible place and we have a great many people to thank for that. Some of them have been memorialised in place names and roads, such as famed men of enterprise MD O’Shea and Dr Hans Liebherr. Other famous sons, like legendary musician Johnny O’Leary from Gneeveguilla and Monsignor Hugh O’Flaherty, have had statues erected in their honour. But what about the man who basically gave Killarney to the people of Killarney? Imagine not having access to Killarney House and its gardens,

the Demesne, Ross Castle, the middle and lower lakes, Innisfallen… It’s unthinkable. Damien Switzer has called for walls of Killarney House and Gardens to be pulled down to make it more accessible to locals and tourists alike and this section of the park to be renamed the John McShain Memorial Park. He would also like to see a statue to erected somewhere prominent in town. After all we have the Bourn Vincent Memorial Park in Muckross. I, for one, agree with him. It seems strange to me that someone who played such a massively positive role in our past should be so absent in our present. What do you think? TOWNTALK Ballyhar Girl Aiming For Miss Universe Crown Talented Ballyhar native Molly Sullivan will have the whole of Kerry behind her when she takes part in Miss Universe Ireland in Dublin on August 2. Molly is one of 28 participants who will be hoping to claim the top spot at the Mansion House and go on to represent Ireland at one of the biggest beauty pageants in the world, Miss Universe. For Molly, who has 13 All-Ireland medals in rowing, this has been a long held dream. “I’ve always wanted to do something like this,” she said. “I know there’s Miss Kerry as well but I wanted to go a bit bigger. I saw online that they were casting and I entered my submission in April. I thought no more of it to be honest but I got a call in June and it’s been all go since then.” Molly and her fellow contestants will be interviewed before walking on stage in a ball gown

and a bikini, but the 20-year-old law and psychology student says it’s not based on appearance. “I know there’s a stigma about that but it’s not judged on what you look like. It’s not about your image, it’s about your personality. It’s done by interview the day before. The walking in your bikini and your dress is purely to judge your confidence.” Molly is prepared to take a year out of college if she wins Miss Universe Ireland and says she would use her title to work on some issues that are important to her. “Suicide has been so high in Ireland and in Kerry recently so that’s definitely something I’d want to highlight, and also the Cancer Society would be close to my heart as well. “Miss Universe Ireland is a huge thing and winning it would mean so much to me.”

Mayor Sheahan Swaps Kerry For Killarney Words: Adam Moynihan Fine Gael councillor John Sheahan’s reign as Mayor of Kerry has come to an end but he immediately took over another top post: Mayor of Killarney. Sheahan did a fine job in his previous position and it will be interesting to see what he brings to the table. He certainly has plenty of experience in the field; he has been a member of the council 2007. Sheahan replaces outgoing Mayor Niall Kelleher who has been tipped in some quarters to run for the Dáil at the next general

election. Sheahan certainly has big shoes to fill; Kelleher proved to be popular and efficient servant to the town of Killarney and was responsible for a number of great ideas throughout his tenure. Niall was a good friend to the Killarney Advertiser and personally I found him quite helpful and forthcoming. We wish him well in the next chapter of his career.

New Graveyard Finally Opens At Knockeendubh There was good news this week as the new Killarney graveyard at Knockeendubh has finally opened. The green light was given to the project back in November and preliminary works began on the site back in January. Killarney has for many years now faced a crisis when it comes to grave space, with the Aghadoe graveyard filled to capacity. The Knockeendubh graveyard will have around 2,300 plots, a columbar-

ium for funeral urns and a car park. It will serve the town of Killarney and the surrounding areas for the next 35 years. It is believed that minor works remain to be undertaken and no one has been buried at the new site yet. The Killarney Advertiser campaigned heavily for the development of a new graveyard in the Killarney area and, as such, are delighted with the news that this project has been completed.

I was working nights in London, back in nineteen sixty six, In a factory in Harlesden, making Jaffa cakes. We were a bunch of students, from the north and from the south, Living off our wits, and existing hand to mouth. Sixteen of us worked as a team, sharing one bedroom dive, Half of us were working days, and the rest all stayed alive, By working nights in factories, right through till the dawn, It was a splendid set-up, all that summer long. Alf Ramsey managed England, and they reached the World Cup final, He said that they would win it, and we all thought that he was mental. They were playing Germany, who had won Jules Rimet before, We laughed at Alf’s delusion, going into this war. To make a long story short, they won it in extra time, And we were all disgusted, for the Irish at the time, Never supported England; it was just what we did, Because of all the history, we never wanted them to win. Now England is right in there, en route to final glory, I think things have changed somewhat, in the past half century. Relationships have improved, and now Irish folk might cheer, For our nearest neighbours, in this World Cup year!

Anne Lucey gives her take on happenings in Killarney, Kerry and beyond

Sacred Sundays In France According to the woman living in Galway seated next to me on the Ryanair flight from Dublin to Tours, one of the great things about France is Sundays. She visits France twice a year: the two-week summer holidays with her husband to various regions when the grown-up children join them for a while, and in the autumn there is a week in the south. I agreed with her. In Provence in November, as much as in the Touraine in the summer, Sundays in this country, where church separated from state long ago, are simply sacred. I, too, have noticed this and long appreciated it. The Bishop of Kerry is focusing again on Sundays. Last year was marked by him as a time of renewal of Sunday at every level as a day of rest, a day for home, family and community. Now Bishop Ray Browne is asking that sporting events not clash with Sunday mass times. I think his focus on Sunday is right and very brave and I think he is raising what is as much a social issue as a sacred one. Again our political leaders, and what remnants are left of the trade unions outside the powerful public sector, are not doing their job. It is they who should be querying why more and more workers and not even those in tourist jobs are being asked to work Sundays and for less than the premiums traditionally accorded as an acknowledgement of the intrusion working Sundays brings. There should be an absolute focus on it in Killarney and Dingle where Sunday working in tourism has a long innings. Anyway, the Bishop has begun the

debate. But does he ask the same about Saturday evening mass times? You see, I think the great gap in the Church’s appeal on keeping Sundays sacred, its great Achilles heel, if you will, is the Saturday evening mass. This is what let the fox into the henhouse when it comes to sacred Sundays.I was trying to remember when it was introduced. But it is not that long ago. And I remember being surprised at it. Because, of course, it diluted Sundays. Completely. Apparently allowing people to fulfil their Sunday obligation on Saturday was justified on the grounds of an ancient division of the 24-hour day into sets of evening and morning vigils. But the real reason was, of course, more people were finding it awkward to go to mass on Sunday mornings because of work. At any rate the idea of the Christian Sabbath, or a sacred day, was lost. As it transpires the woman from Galway on the Ryanair flight and the Bishop of Kerry are right on the button when it comes to Sundays. Maybe they are inspired? Because research by a body called the European Foundation for the Improvement of Living and Working Conditions finds Sunday working has increased hugely between 2010 and 2015 across Europe and is still increasing. Ireland and the UK both have among the highest rates of working on Sunday across the EU, and along with Spain have the highest rates of working not just one Sunday but four Sundays in a row, according to the Eurofound survey carried out in 2015. By country, the UK “stood out as having a high proportion of companies with employees working weekends,” the survey found. Only

Sweden, Denmark and Estonia have higher rates of Sunday working than Ireland and England, but most workers there appear to work just one Sunday a month while here workers in the private sector at least work several. Germany has the lowest of all of Sunday work and France also has low rates – though that is changing under Macron. The overall conclusion is Sunday working has increased across the EU. But Norway is rethinking its Sunday openings of shops. Nurses there came out strongly against working Sunday after Sunday. Hungary has now banned shops opening on Sunday and so has the Czech Republic… The research also found that Sunday work appeared to be detrimental to workers’ health, “with a greater likelihood of sickness and absenteeism problems in establishments that operated on Sundays, than in establishments that did not.” So hats off to the Bishop of Kerry for doing the work trade unions and our politicians should be doing.

Over-Tourism Now this column prides itself on being sometimes ahead of the curve, nationally. Not that we do pride very well. Mostly we try to avoid what until recently at least was the greatest of sins and most offensive types of behaviour, in Christian as well as pagan cultures. Anyway, imagine my surprise, after going for a breath of French air, to find the very issues raised in this publication not only touched on, but the main spread in the oldest and national daily in France, Le Fiagaro, last weekend. “La Saturation menace les sites touristiques francais,” Figaro thundered on the front page. And this was followed by three full inside pages of analysis on Saturdays when the paper is at a premium of €5.30 and is most regarded.The article pulled no punches. While the world focus is on Amsterdam, Barcelona and Venice, all of whom are taking measures to limit the number of visitors, tourist sites around the world are threatened. Already, popular French sites like Mont St Michel, villages that are marked as the prettiest in France and the Eiffel Tower itself are overwhelmed – it uses the word “hordes” of tourists. The figures are stark. Today 95 per cent of tourists visit less than 5 per cent of the planet. Natural sites, historical sites and parks are declining as a result, and locals are getting angrier and angrier, Le Figaro has found.

The problems in the medieval walled city Carcassonne are immense and echo some of ours in Kerry. Parking is a huge problem. So, too, toilets. Elsewhere towns and villages are taken over by just restaurants and bars and tourist shops a nd life is uncomfortable for locals and tourist alike. C arcassonne is spending €300,000 now on new public toilets and laying out a new car park outside the walls. But the golden egg is being killed, the articles are warning. According to one craftsman in Carcassonne, he sells more in April when there are fewer tourists than in August whenthere are several times the numbers. The figures Figaro presents are gob-smacking . In 1980, around the first time I visited France, the country got 30.1 million overseas visitors. Last year there were 87 million. In Ireland our figures have increased by close to 3 million in ten years and we now get more than 9 million overseas tourists a year. But is there one extra car space at Torc? For that matter, are there three times the car spaces in Killarney? Are there more toilets in Inch? Figaro has come up with a new term “surtourism” which I care to translate as “over tourism”, as in over-production in the farming sector. Figaro’s conclusion is governments are closing their eyes to the problems being posed. And in France, as in Ireland, the tourism strategy is to attract more and more

overseas tourists and up the numbers. Nobody is addressing the problems of saturation, it finds. And for the most part the problems are being ignored, and being shied away from by political leaders as well as industry leaders. We are to pretend the same sites that welcomed 500,000 can now cope with three times that number without blinking! It also concludes, as argued in this column, that trying to spread the tourists to other sites (like the pound of butter) is not the solution because most tourists want to go to the well-known place. The challenge is limiting numbers, providing facilities and safeguarding the product. Few serious newspapers are taking a serious look at the problem or looking properly at tourism, a major industry. But, it seems, the Killarney Advertiser and the oldest newspaper in France have raised the thorny issue no one else wants to address. And it should be noted that while tourism is now Ireland’s major industry, it is so little seriously taken that a tourism ministry is a minor thing and no major newspaper or broadcaster has a tourism correspondent to monitor it. To paraphrase Leo, the gossip and whispers in the corridors of Leinster house has dozens of correspondents focussing on the rumour mill. Now if only I could write better in French; Figaro and the Advertiser could have a twinning!

John McShain was responsible for the reconstruction of the White House, the building of the Jefferson Memorial, the Pentagon and the John F Kennedy Centre amongst others...

John McShain was born on December 21st 1898 on Appletree Street in Philadelphia. His parents (John and Catherine) had both emigrated from Ireland. In the early 1880s, John Sr. became involved in the construction business as soon as he arrived in Philadelphia. By the late 1890s, John McShain Sr. had become moderately well established as a builder of Catholic churches, schools, rectories, and convents. John attended various Catholic schools and graduated in 1918. He then spent a year at Georgetown University, but he had to withdraw when his father died during his sophomore year. In 1919, John McShain took over his father’s building business. Most of John McShain’s early projects were church related as he specialized in building Catholic Parochial schools, convents, and rectories. On May 28th, 1927 John McShain married Mary Horstmann, daughter of Ignatius Horstmann, a Philadelphia clothing manufacturer and Union League Republican. In the years after his marriage, John McShain established himself as one of Philadelphia’s most important builders.

This is the life story of the great John McShain, a multimillionaire philanthropist who bestowed Killarney with ‘the greatest gift any town could receive’. Yet sadly no statue or street bears his name.

In 1952 he purchased a stable with four horses in central New Jersey which he called Barclay Stables. McShain’s horses were extremely successful during the late 1950s. In 1957, Ballymoss won the Irish Derby, the English St. Leger, the Coronation, the Eclipse Stakes, the King George and Queen Elizabeth, and Arc de Triomphe races. His firm became one of the largest construction companies in the United States. In Philadelphia, John McShain was active in Republican Party politics. However, in Washington he maintained both business and social relationships with Democratic Presidents Franklin D. Roosevelt, Harry Truman, and John Kennedy. After the White House renovation was completed in 1951, John McShain began to have health problems. His doctor recommended that he take up horse racing as a hobby.

How can you buy Killarney

In 1957 John McShain was part of a syndicate that purchased the 8,300-acre Kenmare estate in Killarney from Mrs Beatrice Grosvenor, niece of the 7th Earl of Kenmare. In late 1959, John McShain bought out his partners and became the sole owner of a large portion of modern day Killarney.

Church. In 1944 John McShain organized John McShain Charities and during the next 45 years he transferred most of his assets to the Charities, which made substantial donations to Catholic colleges and parochial schools, as well as to Philadelphia-area cultural institutions.

Gift of Killarney

In 1973, they made a gift to the nation of Innisfallen Island and the ruins of its historic abbey. They also gave Ross Castle to the guardianship of the State. Realising that the Killarney Estate was the property most desired by the Government, the McShains decided, in 1979, to turn over the estate for a nominal sum on the understanding they would retain a life tenancy of the house and some acreage. A Brief Estate History

Kenmare House was originally built in the 1720s and demolished in 1870s. In that same year The Earl began construction of the new Killarney House, built on higher ground. In 1879 it burnt down just shortly after its completion and again in September 1916 the house was destroyed. Instead of rebuilding again, Valentine Browne, 5th Earl of Kenmare, renovated the original 18th Century Courtyard from what was the Kenmare Estate. Here is where their family resided, also naming it “Kenmare House”.

John McShain spent more than three years modernizing the estate, which at first was used primarily as a summer residence. As the years went by John McShain and his wife Mary spent more and more time at Killarney. By the late 1960s, he was spending more than half the year in Ireland. McShain, of course, kept in touch with his offices in Philadelphia, Baltimore, Washington, and Trenton. John McShain was a deeply religious man and a devout practicing Catholic. His only child, Pauline, entered the Convent of the Holy Child Jesus at New Sharon, Pennsylvania on September 25, 1946 and spent her career as a Nun doing educational work for the Catholic

Before signing the agreement, they insisted on the condition that the lands would be incorporated into Killarney National Park in perpetuity. They retaining Killarney House and its grounds for their own use, which also was eventually gifted to Killarney and it’s people.

Killarney House 1980’s

From the day John and Mary had first seen the estate in 1958, they were enamoured by its view of lakes and mountains, and the peacefulness of its paths. Once they had completed the remodeling of the interior of the house, they realized that Killarney was a place where John could finally relax after years of intense pressure from his business interests. But he and Mary were also eager to share the beauty of their new home with family and friends. Among their earliest houseguests, in January 1962, were Sean T. O’Kelly and his wife Phyllis, who returned for another visit in 1964.

It was here in Killarney House that the McShains chose to spend their last years, John dying in 1989 and Mary in 1998.

As previously arranged, the entire estate became part of the Killarney National Park at the time of Mary’s death. Since then, the distinctive gates and railings of the Killarney House estate have been restored to the style of the Earls of Kenmare, recalling the name by which the estate has always been known to the locals, The Golden Gates. In 1999 the government announced ambitious plans to restore the house. Yet for 18 years the famous golden gates remained closed. Eventually the restoration was completed and John and Mary McShains vision was complete when Killarney House was opened to the public.

Everyday Killarney

On a daily basis locals and tourists alike stroll the tree lined walks that meander through the National Park from the demesne to the 15th century fortress of the O’Donoghues’ Ross Castle. The woodlands that stretch from the town to lakes team with wildlife. We hold high in our list of local treasures our crystal clear lakes, the middle and lower lakes, both of which the McShains bestowed to us, Browne island and Legendary Innisfallen Island and its historic Monastery. John McShain’s gift is in daily use but nowhere of prominence do I see a tribute or plaque. In many of travels abroad I have witnessed museums dedicated, statutes in town squares, tree lined boulevards named to honour great philanthropists. John McShain deserves more from Killarney.

Think about what it would be like without Ross Castle, Killarney House, The Demesne, Innisfallen Island, the lakes... it’s unthinkable. So I salute you John McShain, hopefully in my lifetime we will erect a staute in your honour. by Damien Switzer SWITZER ARCHIVE

Labour Of Love To Restore “Dream Machine” It was a labour of love for the Killarney Valley Classic & Vintage club as they restored a 1989 Land Rover 90, all in the name of charity. They gave the Land Rover a whole new lease of life and, as our pictures show, they put it to the test recently on back in Rossbeigh. Following the success of last year’s Massey Fergusson 135 tractor restoration project, the club took on an even bigger challenge of an old Land Rover 90, which happens to coincide with the 70th anniversary of Land Rover. The club sourced the old Land Rover through a friend of the club in Cork. The vehicle had been off the road since 2002 and had only 82,000 miles on the clock. Tom Leslie and John Coffey from the Killarney Vintage Club describe the painstaking but, remarkable restoration story. “The vehicle was in good condition except for the bulk head which had a serious rust issue,” Tom explained. “The chassis and other components were well-maintained but the club decided to do a complete dismantle last November when the project began. This included the full galvanising of the chassis to give it a modern look. The club added a sump guard, winch, roof

rack, awning, LED lights and a full body spray was carried out to make it a dream machine.” Club Chairman James Looney estimated that it took over 300 hours of voluntary time to complete the restoration which would not have been possible to complete without the huge support of the club members, sponsors and supporters of all walks of life. “The project was a great social event for our committee and club members and we would like to sincerely thank everyone who got involved,” James said. “It would not have been possible to complete the restoration without their help and support, which is greatly appreciated.” Benefitting this year from the proceeds are Down Syndrome Kerry and Recovery Haven Cancer Support Group. Ian Helps Launch Puck Fair 2018 With just over a month to go before Ireland’s oldest festival kicks off for another year, the Puck Fair committee officially launched the 2018 programme during an exciting event that was held at Sheahan’s Bar last Saturday at 8pm. This year’s event was particularly special not only for the Killorglin community but also for the county as a whole, as a well-known and inspirational young Kerry man was on hand to officially launch the age-old event. Fresh from a recent appearance on The Late Late Show during which he spoke with admirable positivity about his continuing recovery following last year’s cycling tragedy that left him paralysed from the neck down, Ian O’Connell from Killarney took time from his schedule to launch Puck Fair 2018, beginning the celebrations with the enthusiasm he is known for. His inspiring motto, “If you can’t stand up, stand out,” even attracted the attention of his idol Conor McGregor, who paid tribute to the determined teen on Instagram. Donald Trump has arrived in the UK for a four-day visit which will feature talks with Theresa May, tea with the Queen, and mass protests including a giant Trump baby blimp being flown over Westminster. Trump’s plane touched down at Stansted airport, in Essex, from Brussels, where he had spent two days at the Nato summit. He is due to remain in the UK until Sunday evening, when he will head to Helsinki for a summit with Vladimir Putin. Air Force One landed at London Stansted airport at 1:51pm yesterday, with the media given no access to the president during the flight. Trump descended from the plane holding the hand of his wife Melania, and was greeted by Liam Fox, the international trade secretary, before they boarded the helicopter Marine One for the short journey to London, most likely to the US ambassador’s residence, Winfield House. Parents Granted Access To Dead Daughter’s Facebook Page Germany’s highest court has ruled that the parents of a dead daughter have the rights to her Facebook account under inheritance law. The Federal Court of Justice (BGH) said online data should be treated the same as private diaries or letters, and pass to heirs. The case involves parents of a 15-yearold girl killed by a train in 2012. They sought access to her Facebook account to try to determine whether the death was suicide. Aside from emotional closure, the parents also wanted to know whether the train driver was entitled to compensation - as would be the case in the event of a suicide. Facebook had refused access to the account after their daughter’s death, citing privacy concerns about the girl’s

contacts. Under its current policy, the company only allows relatives of the dead partial access to the account, allowing them to change the page into an online memorial or to delete it entirely. A lower German court backed the parents in 2015, supporting the claim that Facebook data was covered by inheritance law as the equivalent of private correspondence. But in 2017, an appeals court backed Facebook and overturned the ruling, on the grounds that any contract between the girl and the company ended with her death and could not pass on to the parents. The case went to the BGH, and her parents have now reportedly taken over the account. Judge Ulrich Hermann said it was common to hand over private diaries and correspondence to legal heirs after death, and there was no reason to treat digital data any differently. Moreover, the court added that the parents had a right to know who their child, a minor, had spoken to online.

Iranian Man Flogged For Drinking Alcohol As A Child Amnesty International has condemned the Iranian authorities for publicly flogging a man who was convicted of consuming alcohol when he was 14 or 15. Local media published photographs of the man - identified only as “M R” - being given 80 lashes in a square in the eastern city of Kashmar on Tuesday. Prosecutors say he was arrested in the Iranian year of 1385 (March 2006-March 2007) and sentenced the next year. It is not clear why the punishment was carried out more than 10 years later. The photographs show a young man tied to a tree being flogged by a masked man in uniform. A small crowd of people can be seen watching at a distance. “The circumstances of this case are absolutely shocking, repre-

senting another horrific example of the Iranian authorities’ warped priorities,” Amnesty’s Middle East and North Africa Director, Philip Luther, said in a statement. “No-one, regardless of age, should be subjected to flogging; that a child was prosecuted for consuming alcohol and sentenced to 80 lashes beggars belief.” The Young Journalists Club website quoted Kashmar’s prosecutor as saying M R consumed alcohol at a wedding where an argument caused a fight in which a 17-yearold boy was killed. He was not suspected of involvement in the death. Article 265 of Iran’s Islamic penal code states that the punishment for consumption of alcohol by a Muslim is 80 lashes.

Brian O’Driscoll Spotted At Orange Order Parade Former Irish rugby captain Brian O’Driscoll was among visitors to an Orange parade in Co Armagh. He was in the village of Loughgall which hosted the flagship event for the Orange Order’s annual July 12 commemoration this year. Orange Order member Aaron Willis from Loughgall said O’Driscoll got a very warm welcome, and that as a sports fan he was particularly excited to see him. “We were just getting off the bus to line up for the parade when we saw him,” he told the Press Association. Then one of the guys asked him if he wanted to have a go on a lambeg drum. Everyone was so excited to see him and asking to get their picture taken with him, and he seemed to be enjoying himself which is the main thing.” Armagh man Ivor Whitten snapped a selfie with the sporting star just before the main parade started.

Posting the photograph to his Instagram account, Mr Whitten commented: “Just bumping into @brianodriscoll in #Loughgall As you do. Earthquake Leads To Discovery Of Ancient Mexican Temple Archaeologists scanning a Mexican pyramid for damage following September’s devastating earthquake have uncovered traces of an ancient temple. The temple is nestled inside the Teopanzolco pyramid in Morelos state, 70km south of Mexico City. It is thought to date back to 1150 and to belong to the Tlahuica culture, one of the Aztec peoples living in central Mexico. The structure is dedicated to Tláloc, the Aztec rain god. Archaeologists say it would have measured 6m by 4m. Among the temple’s remains they also found an incense burner and ceramic shards. The discovery was made when scientists from Mexico’s National Institute of Anthropology and

History (INAH) used a radar to check for structural damage to the Teopanzolco pyramid in Cuernavaca. Archaeologist Barbara Koniecza said the 7.1-magnitude earthquake which hit Mexico in September caused considerable damage to Teopanzolco, in particular to two temples “The pyramid suffered considerable rearrangement of the core of its structure,” Ms Koniecza said. Research suggests that the Tlahuica lived in dozens of small city-states in the area of modern-day Morelos state. The main structures at the archaeological site of Teopanzolco are thought to date back to the 13th Century, which means that the newly discovered temple would have predated them. Ms Koniecza says it was not unusual for the Tlahuica to build on top of older structures.

Brothers Found Guilty Of Murdering Gunman Two brothers have been found guilty of murdering a gunman who fired at their home while their father has walked free after being acquitted of the same crime. Dean Bradley (24) and Jason Bradley (20) were found guilty by a unanimous jury verdict following more than nine hours of deliberations of the murder of Neil Reilly. Members of the Bradley family, including a third brother Ryan (18), who was acquitted of the murder charge earlier in the trial, cried when the verdicts were read out. Museum And Film Planned For Thai Cave The cave complex in northern Thailand where 12 boys and their football coach were trapped for more than two weeks is set to be turned into a museum. Rescue officials said the museum would showcase how the operation unfolded, predicting it would be a “major attraction” for Thailand. At least two companies are also looking to make a film telling the story of the rescue. The rescued group are all now recovering in hospital. Video has been released showing them in good health and in good spirits, though they will stay in quarantine for a week. The Thai Navy Seals have also published dramatic footage of the operation itself, showing how expert divers navigated the Wild Boar football team through the perilous journey to the surface.

On Thursday, the Navy Seals were given flower garlands and an enthusiastic welcome as they arrived at a military airport south of the capital, Bangkok. The Tham Luang cave is one of the largest cave systems in Thailand. It lies under the mountains around the small town of Mae Sai, in northern Chiang Rai province on the border with Myanmar. The area is largely undeveloped with only limited tourism facilities. “The area will become a living museum, to show how the operation unfolded,” Narongsak Osottanakorn, the former governor and head of the rescue mission, told a news conference. “An interactive data base will be set up. It will become another major attraction for Thailand.”

The movie ’Wind River’ is currently available on Netflix. It is well worth a look. If you like films such as ‘Fargo’ then this will give you the same tense, chill feeling. Gripping from the start. It’s a murder mystery set on an Indian Reservation in the snowy winter of Wyoming. It’s written and directed by Taylor Sheridan better known for ‘Hell or High Water’. A young Native American woman called Natalie is found dead, barefoot, she’s been assaulted. Her body is found by wildlife tracker Cory Lambert played by Jeremy Renner who gives an amazing performance. He knows how to track the snowy land. The snow helps and hinders the in-

vestigation. FBI agent called Jane Banner played by Elizabeth Olsen is recruited to solve the case. She’s young, inexperienced, out of her comfort zone of Las Vegas but proves herself to be tough. She asks Lambert to help. He agrees and they act splendidly together along with the local tribal sheriff Ben, played by Graham Greene, well remembered from his roles in ‘Dances with Wolves’ and ‘Longmire’. This drama consists of murder, rape, deprived people socially and emotionally, drugs and violence. Its well worth watching for the performances, atmospheric landscape and music by Nick Cave and Warren Ellis.

Kids Take Part In Mini Ring Of Kerry A host of youngsters and their families took part in a fun-filled cycling event last Friday in what resembled a mini Ring of Kerry around Killarney National Park. Pedal in the Park, in collaboration with Killarney Cycling Club and the Ring of Kerry Cycle Committee, was held on the eve of the 175km Ring of Kerry

Charity Cycle and presented its prodigious participants with a choice of two distances: 5km for 5 to 8-year-olds and 10km for 9 to 14-year-olds. A wonderful day was had by all and organisers deserve great credit for hosting such a health-positive and entertaining event for the children and parents of Killarney. Well done to all who took part!

In order to apply, you will need a Leaving Certificate qualification (or equivalent), Grade 6 at ordinary level in five subjects, two of which must be Maths and a language (English or Irish). Each participant will complete the required learning modules which alternate between on-site practical training under the guidance of seasoned professionals at our facilities and learning theory-based elements through block release to Cork Institute of Technology. 4th Of July At The Celtic Whiskey Bar & Larder The most coveted selection of some of the rarest of these bourbons that landed into the Celtic Whiskey Bar & Larder this 4th of July. Presented by Brand Ambassador Alan Keane from Hi-Spirits Ireland, guests were blown away by an American whiskey tasting including the complete Antique Collection. The evening commenced with a welcome tipple of Buffalo Trace; a fantastic bourbon with some delicious creamy and fruity notes, which would undoubtedly whet the appetite for what was to follow. Bourbon novices and enthusiasts alike were then introduced to the 1792 Bourbon - the distillery that experienced a devastating warehouse collapse last week. Next on the line up was the Stagg JR; at a jaw-dropping 67.2% ABV! This was then followed by the full Antique Collection consisting of three bourbons and two

rye whiskies. This highly sought-after collection has been selected from unique barrels across different warehouse selections, illustrating a broad range of flavour and complexity. It was no surprise that the William LaRue Weller and George T Stagg from the Antique Collection were the highlights of the evening, with both expressions being very rare and known for their rich character. It was a wonderfully electric night in Killarney as the parade gave way to spectacular fireworks on an evening so warm you’d be forgiven for thinking one was sipping said bourbon under the Nashville skyline. Next on the bar’s calendar will be a Dublin Liberties Distillery and Dead Rabbit whiskey tasting on Wednesday, July 18 at 7pm. Tickets are €12 and all proceeds of the tasting will go to the Kerry Parents & Friends charity. Sláinte!

There’s A Climber Garden Magic For Every Situation Words: Debby Looney

Have you bare walls to cover? Or an unsightly shed? Or a bank on which nothing will grow? Well in that case read on, as there is a climber for every situation! We are all familiar with climbing roses, which need sun, shelter, ventilation and care. However, the rambling rose is much more resilient and grateful. From early summer, right through the autumn, and in some winters, they flower away, content with any soil and a minimum of shelter. I think the ‘Rambling Rector’ is one of the most beautiful white ramblers available. It has pure white blossoms, with bright yellow stamens. There is an abundance of varieties in hedgerows. Mark them and take hardwood cuttings! Rambling roses are excellent for walls but really show their usefulness draped over a

bank. Wisterias are beautiful in the spring with their mauve cascades of flowers. Their stems are attractive in their own right in the winter. Now is the time to prune your wisteria, back to about six buds on each shoot. Then in early spring they can be cut back again to three buds. Clematis is another favourite, from Montana in the early spring followed by alpine varieties in March and April, to summer varieties such as ‘Nelly Moser’ and ‘Bijoux’, ending in the winter with C. cirrhosa ‘Freckles’. There is certainly one for everyone! Evergreen climbers include reliable ivies but also climbing hydrangeas. H. petiolaris is usually evergreen here, and H. seemanii is definitely evergreen. Both produce white flowers and like

the shade so northern or western walls suit them. We are all familiar with honeysuckle but less well-known is the evergreen honeysuckle, Clematis japonica ‘Halliana’. Covered in highly scented, pure white blooms, they fade to yellow giving it a two-toned appearance. The foliage is a rich dark green and it tolerates a fair amount of shade. A beautiful plant over pergolas! For speed coverage, few plants beat Virginian creeper, also called Boston Ivy, or Parthenocissus. They go bright red in the autumn but unfortunately do not flower. It is incredibly fast growing, clinging to the wall itself. It tolerates full shade but for the best autumn colour, a south or east facing wall is preferable. Clematis montana is also a very fast grower, with masses of soft pink or white flowers in the spring. If they are

happy, passion flowers, or Passiflora caerula, are also fast growers. And evergreen! With beautiful flowers. They flower best when the roots are restricted by a path, or in a pot, or if there are other plants growing close to it. In our climate a south or south-west facing wall is best as they need at least four hours of sunlight a day to flower well. Last but not least, as I like to save the best ‘til last, is Tropaeolum speciose, or Flame Creeper. It is a type of nasturtium but a perennial variety. It dies back completely in the winter only to suddenly reappear and flower in the summer. It’s flowers are very similar to nasturtiums but much more vivid. It likes a cool, moist spot, and flowers well even when the summer is not that great!

Vettel Wins Silverstone Thriller As Hamilton Recovers To Second Lewis Hamilton’s hopes of a record sixth British Grand Prix looked to be in tatters after Kimi Raikkonen pitched him into a spin at the start. The Mercedes driver recovered to second in spectacular fashion but it was title rival Sebastian Vettel who took the ultimate spoils with a superbly measured performance. Hamilton arrived at Silverstone one point adrift of Vettel in the drivers’ standings but confident in the knowledge that he was the favourite to win in front of his home crowd. That looked unlikely within moments of the lights going out, but the polesitter refused to give up the fight. Mercedes gave themselves a chance of snatching back the win by leaving Hamilton and Valtteri Bottas out when the Safety Car was called into

action late in the race, while Ferrari and Red Bull pitted for fresh tyres. And for a few laps, it looked like it may work as Bottas held off Vettel, with Hamilton to third. But, ultimately, Vettel had too much pace on the softer tyres and after eyeing his prey for a few laps, brilliantly snatched the lead from Bottas. Hamilton also moved past the Finn, but he didn’t have the performance to attack Vettel and had to settle for second with Raikkonen third. It was Vettel’s 51st victory, moving him level with four-time world champion Alain Prost in third on the all-time list. The German extends his championship lead over Hamilton to eight points heading to his home race at Hockenheim. It’s the first time it’s been more than a point since the Chinese Grand Prix.

Mercedes-Benz Gets Beijing Self-Driving License Daimler has become the first foreign car-maker to be granted an autonomous vehicle testing license for China’s roads. The company released a statement confirming its new license for Level 4 self-driving prototypes covered roads in Beijing, Shanghai and roads and highways in between. The Chinese government has given similar licenses to its homegrown car-makers, like the Beijing-based BAIC, the Shanghai-based SAIC, tech company Baidu and start-up car-maker (and Formula E contender) Nio. Daimler, the parent company of Mercedes-Benz and smart, has

an extensive history of self-driving test and development dating back more than two decades and even has its own specialised self-driving test facility in Immendingen, in Germany’s southwest. It already has self-driving licenses for public roads in Germany and the United States.

Nissan GT-R50 By Italdesign To Cost €900,000 Plus Fifty examples of the stunning Nissan GTR50 by Italdesign will be produced and one of them can be yours for a cool €0.9 million. That’s the news from Nissan ahead of the bespoke-bodied supercar’s world debut at this weekend’s Goodwood Festival of Speed, where the GT-R50 will indeed take to the world-famous Chichester hill-climb in England. Revealed in full via a series of images and a YouTube video, the Nissan GT-R50 by Italdesign was first announced in June, when Nissan confirmed its first collaboration with Italdesign to celebrate the 50th birthday of both the GT-R and the Italian design house in 2019 and 2018 respectively. Now it has announced it will build 50 of the bespoke-bodied supercars, powered by a 530kW/780Nm 3.8-litre twin-turbo V6 – making

it about 90kW more powerful than the top-shelf Nissan GT-R NISMO. Each will come with an officially estimated starting price of €900,000 and customers are invited to register their interest via a dedicated GT-R50 website – what are you waiting for?

In 1843, two years after the death of Catherine McAuley, Dr. Egan, the bishop of Kerry, requested Mother Elizabeth Moore, of Limerick, to send sisters to Killarney. As in so many other places, he was concerned for the plight of the poor, the sick and those without education. There was also help being offered by a wealthy couple in the town, a Mr. & Mrs. Gallwey.

On 2 October 1844 five sisters arrived in Killarney and stayed in a house provided for them by the Gallwey’s, at St. Brigid’s High Street (O’Shea Tyres). From the moment of their arrival the sisters began caring for those who were sick and housebound. With the aid of donations from various well off people in the area, the sisters were able to relieve distress and to distribute hot meals at the convent several times a week. During the famine years the sisters nursed the sick and dying in their homes, in the temporary wards set up in the then unfinished Cathedral building, and in Brewery Lane where people lay on nothing but straw. The famine also took its toll on the sisters with twenty of them dying between 1850 and 1853. After the famine the bishop encouraged the sisters to get involved in education. By 1854 they had started a school - St. David’s - at what is now the site of the Arbutus Hotel. As the number of sisters increased, the Earl of Kenmare gave an attractive site on Rock Road, where Holy Cross Convent and schools were built. The sisters moved there on 2 July 1857. St. Joseph’s Orphanage was opened in 1861. A lace Industry and a laundry were also started to provide employment for girls. In response to a request from the Poor Law Guardians six sisters were assigned to a convent attached to the workhouse and began a nursing ministry in the town.

Defeat In Super 8s Opener Would Be An Absolute Disaster Pic: Paudie Healy

Words: Adam Moynihan On paper there shouldn’t be a whole pile of pressure on Kerry ahead of their first ever Super 8 game against Galway on Sunday. With two teams advancing from the group of four, the prospect of Eamonn Fitzmaurice’s side crashing out at what is effectively the quarter final stage seems even more unlikely than usual. But looking at the wider picture (and Kerry’s second fixture in particular), this weekend’s clash against the Connacht champions takes on huge significance. If they were to lose this weekend, next week’s match against Monaghan in Clones would start to look a lot more intimidating than it already does. In normal circumstances you’d expect Kerry to handle Monaghan but I wouldn’t fancy heading up to St Tiernach’s Park for a mustwin championship game. The atmosphere above there would be electric, especially if the home fans knew that victory would eliminate the Kingdom. Monaghan are best placed of all the qualifiers to upset the apple cart and make it to an

All-Ireland semi-final. They couldn’t have handpicked their Super 8 fixtures better themselves. Firstly, they avoided Dublin. Secondly, they got their toughest game (Kerry) at home. And thirdly, they sidestepped a trip to the fabled Newbridge and instead got Galway away. The fixture gods are really smiling on Monaghan this year; they played three qualifier games to make it this far and every one of them was against Division 4 opposition. Defeat for Kerry on Sunday definitely isn’t out of the question. Galway are no slouches. Forwards Shane Walsh and Ian Burke have impressed so far and the face-off between star man Damien Comer and Kerry’s Peter Crowley will be an interesting one. I would say that 3/1 is a long enough price for Galway considering the calibre of players they have. I thought Kerry have looked excellent at times this year but, realistically, the Munster Championship was a walk in the park. Having said that, they still racked up 3-50 in two games and I think this Kerry team already have too much about them for everyone else in the country bar Dublin.

World Cup Clash

Kerry v Galway is without question the tie of the round, which makes it all the more unbelievable that the

GAA scheduled it for the exact same time as the World Cup final. I know I addressed this last week but it really does beggar belief. Could both Sunday games not have started earlier? Or could Dublin v Donegal have been a standalone on the Sunday? That game is on at 7pm on the Saturday, meaning Donegal fans have to hit the road at around half eight at night. Making fixtures is a thankless task but there’s no way in hell the GAA made these decisions with supporters in mind. I saw during the week that the Galway County Board wrote to FIFA requesting that they push back the kick-off time of the World Cup final so it wouldn’t clash with the Kerry game. FIFA would be missing out on viewers, they said. I know it’s top, top banter and it must have taken them ages to write (typos and all) but the real joke here is on genuine Irish sports fans who are interested in both football and soccer. I naturally want to see the World Cup final (especially considering who’s playing), and I would almost consider boycotting the Kerry game just to spite the GAA in this instance, but I’m up in Dublin anyway and I actually want to see the lads play. For many of us in Croke Park on Sunday, it will be our first time missing a World Cup final. It’s a shame because this fixture clash was completely avoidable.

Legion Host Spa In Crucial Division 1 Derby

Killarney Legion face Spa this evening in a crucial County League game that could have major ramifications for the rest of the season. Legion currently find themselves just outside the relegation zone on six points and with just three games to play, two points against Spa would go a long way towards securing their Division 1 status. Spa should realistically be safe already after winning their first five games in emphatic fashion. Things have taken a bit of turn for them of late, though; they’re currently on a three-game losing streak. Nevertheless, they’ll be up for their visit to Derreen and they have the talent to cause Legion real problems. The Derreen side were disappointed to lose that Rathmore game a couple of weeks ago, especially considering how well they played on the night. It would have been a big result coming on the back of the Mitchels win but it wasn’t to be. Spa are always tough opponents but if Legion perform the way they have been of late, they’ll be confident enough that they can get over the line. The final two games are against teams below them so victory tonight would put Jamesie O’Sullivan’s team

in a strong position heading down the stretch. Elsewhere, Dr Crokes will confirm their place in the final if they manage to beat An Ghaeltacht in Gallarus tomorrow. Their form in the league has been excellent since their opening day draw with Glenbeigh-Glencar and at this stage it looks to be a case of Crokes plus one in Division 1. Rahilly’s and An Ghaeltacht are joint second at the moment on 11 points but Spa (10), Templenoe (9) and maybe even Mary’s (8) are all still in contention. Down in Division 2, there’s a big game in the race for promotion as second place Kilcummin play third place Castleisland Desmonds at home. Intermediate champs Kilcummin have been in sensational form of late, registering an incredible 9-43 in their last three games. East Kerry Clubs Pointing The Way When researching for my County League preview this week, I noticed that a couple of East Kerry clubs seemed to be putting up huge scores so I decided to delve a bit deeper. As it turns out, clubs from the district are really pointing the way so far this season. Among the 12 highest scoring sides in the county, eight hail from East Kerry. Firies’ tally of 193 in eight games is particularly impressive – that’s 24 points per outing. Remarkably, they also have the meanest defence in their division (102) giving them a points difference of +91, which

is 47 points better than the next best in Division 4. Even more remarkably, they currently find themselves in second place. The successful Kerry minor sides of recent years had plenty of promising East Kerry players in their ranks, as did the Sem teams who won Hogan Cups (naturally enough), and it appears as though some of these youngsters are now making their mark at senior club level. It’s an exciting time for the district and hopefully plenty of these teams will be able to translate their high scoring into trophies and promotions by the end of the campaign.

Pony The Hero In First Ever MLS Shootout

There was high drama this week down at the Killarney Athletic 7-a-side as we saw the first MLS shootout in the tournament’s 42-year history. In the first round of the playoffs, Dunboy Construction held my own team, The Speakeasy, to a 1-1 draw and, in a departure from previous years, the match went straight to penalties. But not just any penalties: in a new format borrowed from American soccer, players had to dribble from the centre circle and shoot/dribble past the advancing goalkeeper to score. There was great interest in this novel addition and it was great fun for spectators and players alike - even though I missed mine. Thankfully our goalkeeper Conor ‘Pony’ O’Riordan came to my rescue.

He stepped up to score our 7th penalty by calmly rounding his opposite number (check out the video on Killarney Athletic’s Instagram), and then he saved Dunboy’s last effort. Everyone seemed to enjoy it and hopefully there will be one or two more before the tournament is over. The penultimate week of action kicks off Monday night and there are some great matches in store. In the senior, the four quarter finals take place with Cavemen Clothing v Tatler Toffees and Four Star Pizza v The Speak kicking off at 7.35. Liebherr v Fáilte Bar (who shocked one of the favourites, MD O’Shea’s, in the playoffs) and O’Riordan Sand & Gravel v Fáilte Legends both kick off at 8pm.

As I said last week, it’s hard to view the English as the underdogs considering their colonial past. Tensions have eased between the peoples of our neighbouring countries in recent times but rooting against English sports teams, especially when it comes to football and rugby, is still a popular pastime over here. Having said that, I was a bit taken aback by the amount of Instagram stories I saw on Wednesday night of friends revelling in Croatia’s victory… I didn’t even realise that some of them were soccer fans. Maybe they’re not. Maybe they’re just anti-England fans. The English media are often cited as the main reason behind our Anglophobia and I definitely get that. On the BBC, the way Lineker and co. fawn over their “young lions” is tough to watch. It’s hard to tell if they’re simply hamming it up for their audience or if they really are that deluded. Either way, it’s annoying. The fans, too, come in for a fair amount of criticism and a lot of the time it’s justified. Their antics at previous tournaments have been fairly pathet-

ic, although there doesn’t seem to have been too much hassle in Russia. You have to remember as well that the majority of English supporters aren’t hooligans. In fact, if you look at it objectively, you could say that their loyalty and biennial optimism through 52 years of abject failure is admirable and actually makes them good football fans. I suppose it’s hard to look at it objectively.

I think you would have to feel a bit bad for the players, though. They were the youngest squad in the tournament and they gave it a good rattle. Fair enough, they reached the semis without playing a good team (bar Belgium in a game that didn’t matter) and they got knocked out as soon as they met a decent side, but they certainly over-performed by making the last four. They gave us a good bit of entertainment and it definitely adds to the spectacle when England do well. They’re not quite good enough at the moment but there’s no reason to believe that they can’t mount another challenge at Euro 2020. “We still believe.” So Croatia will play France in the World Cup final on Sunday. Naturally, everyone reading this will be watching Kerry v Galway instead so there’s not much point in talking about it. I backed France at the start of the tournament so my reputation is on the line. I should be safe enough I’d say… I expect the French attack to be too slick for the likes of Lovren and Vida. France 3-0 Croatia. Mbappé the hero.

The Perfect Team Killarney Credit Union were at a Killarney Camogie Club training session this week as part of their sponsorship of the U-14 team who attended the All-Ireland Féile na nGael. It was the first time in 34 years that Killarney qualified for this event and who took part did themselves and their club proud. Killarney Camogie Club, which was re-established six years ago, has been growing steadily and caters for U-8s right through to the older age groups. Mary O Neill, Chairperson of Killarney Camogie Club, said: “We are delighted with the progress of the club to date and we are always delighted to welcome new members. We have girls attending from different clubs and schools in Killarney, and from different parishes such as Rathmore and Killorglin. The club is a great platform to make long lasting friendships through a team sport, learn new skills and have fun. Rugby Club Asks Locals To Sponsor A Sod sessions with his new teammates as well as a few digs at his old colleague Donncha Ryan with whom he has been reunited. It will be great to see how these Munster greats get on over the next few seasons. Hopefully we will get to see them in action very soon. Locally things are moving on nicely at Aghadoe as Killarney RFC commence phase two of the pitch development. The club has commissioned contractor PRO Golf to improve the drainage on the main playing pitch and the minis pitch and after drainage works are completed, the existing thatch will be re-

moved. The contractor will then spread the surfaces with Wexford sand before reseeding, levelling the entire playing surface as part of the project. Works are expected to take 3–4 weeks and pitches should be playable around the end of September. To this end the club is asking everyone to sponsor a virtual sod for only €25, or 5 sods for €100. Please check out the clubs page at www.krfc.club. Fingers crossed the current drought will end, allowing the reseeding to commence as soon as possible following the main works. The Community Games Munster Final was held over the weekend in U.L. Firies were representing Kerry in skittles u16. Firies played Limerick in the semifinal and won this game and played against Tipperary in the final. Unfortunately Firies lost this game to a very strong Tipp side and brought home the silver medals. Congratulations to team of Cian Sheahan, Michael Brosnan, Michael Moynihan, Liam O Driscoll, Dillon Butler, Patrick & Ciara Kearney. SNEEM COASTAL ROWING, COUNTY CHAMPIONSHIP: No sooner had the Killarney Sixes boats been put out to dry, but out came the four seater Coastal Boats as we travelled en masse to the Oyster Bay in Sneem for the first of our Coastal County Championships. We competed in 22 races, coming home with a total of 13 Gold Medals, 3 Silver and 3 Bronze. We would like to thank everyone at Sneem Rowing Club and Kerry Coastal Rowing for a fantastic day. In the Coastal Rowing Events calendar, we look forward to Sive Regatta later this month, and Fenit Regatta in August, as we build up to the All-Ireland Coastal Championships in Wexford later in August. We congratulate each and every crew on their sporting determination and especially those who rowed competitively in the Coastal Boats for the first time. The Sneem Coastal County Championship took place at the Oysterbed Pier last Sunday.. It was another successful day for the Valley with 3 victory’s in the mens Pre Vet, men’s Junior and an impressive performance from our young u14 boys, John Kelliher, Michael O’Donoghue, Ben Switzer, Jack O’Donoghue, who also brought home the gold. The Valley also took home silver medals in both Minor boys and girls races, as well as 3rd place finishes in the U14&U16 girls races. Well done to all who took part. As always thanks to everyone who helped make this a successful day.

IRISH CHAMPIONSHIPS 2018: The very best of luck to all our crews competing this weekend in an action-packed three days of racing at the Irish Rowing Championships. Over 1,100 crews from over 60 clubs will compete for top national honours at the National Rowing Centre, Inniscarra. The racing timetable and live results feed are available online at the Rowing Ireland website. We wish all the rowers, coxes and coaches every success. We hope to see as many family members and supporters as can make it over the course of the three days. SUMMER OF ROWING: Following the Irish Champs, the NRC will play host to two major international events, namely the Home International Regatta on the weekend of 21st July and the Coupe de la Jeunesse Regatta on the following weekend of 28th July. Killarney Access Group in association with their member Margaret Kenny, well-known local artist, are hosting an Art Exhibition of Margaret’s beautiful selection of scenery and still life painting in a variety of media (oils, watercolour and acrylic) on Sunday 29th July 2018 in the Killarney Outlet Centre (in the former Bag Shop unit) from 12.30pm to 5.30 pm. This is a wonderful opportunity for everyone to purchase a painting of local scenes of Killarney and some beautiful stilllife paintings at a very good price, in fact no reasonable offer will be refused. All proceeds from the Art Exhibition are being donated by Margaret to the Irish Wheelchair Association Kerry Branch and the Multiple Sclerosis Kerry Branch. Munster U-16 Matchplay

A good showing by our club members last weekend as we played

host to this event with 11 out of the 16 players to reach the Knock-Out Stages from the host club. In the Championship competition both Alex O’Callaghan and Robbie Harnett reached the Semi-Finals before losing to eventual winner Shea Fennell (Parteen) and runner-up Glenn Towler (St Annes) respectively. The Plate saw Cillian Courtney victorious over clubmate Cathal Kelly in the Semi-Finals while he defeated Parteen’s Patrick Mitchell in the Final 2&1. Mitchell had defeated Joey McCarthy in the earlier Semi-Final. Well done to Cillian on his win as we must credit the Grounds Committee for their fantastic work in having the course up to standard for the event with the dry, hot and humid conditions of recent times.

Jason O’Brien was the Runner-Up in last Sunday’s Senior event continuing a recent good run of form that we’re all delighted to see. Sports Predictor Competition: Aidan Kavanagh is the leader of our Sports Predictor Competition after the first five events with a total of 18 points as Denis Looney is second on 17 points with a group of five people tied for third on 16 points. Scheduled for next Friday evening July 20th with the competition for the Danny Nolan Cup (Three Ball Scramble) beginning at 6pm and the Mass after at 8pm. The presentation of prizes will take place after the Mass. Entry for the Scramble is €5 per player open to adult members and non-members. Two well drilled units played fantastic football in the cup semifinal, Cork West winning by a goal in a tough physical battle played in a sporting manner. Fossa GAA

U14 BOYS: The East Kerry Under 14 league started last week with a home game against Dr. Crokes. This was a game of two halves, Dr. Crokes were 3-10 to 2-5 ahead at half time and things were not looking good. In truth Crokes played very well and deserved to be ahead. We knew a good start was needed to the second half and that is what happened. Our boys scoring 3-06 to one point in the second half to finish winners on a score of 5-11 to 3-11. On the night Daragh O’Brien, Rian Colleran, Ryan O’Leary and Finn Kennelly were best. Rian Colleran 2-1, Ryan O’Leary 1-1, Harry Kelly 0-4, Patrick Lyons 0-3, Paeder Kelliher 1-0, Ted O’Gorman 1-0 and Darren Ryan 0-2. On Monday evening we were away to Kilcummin. A beautiful evening for football and Fossa came away with the victory 5-08 to 1-08. Both teams played good football with our boys just on top on the night. Fossa played as a team and moved the ball well. On the night Rocco Sheehan, Robert Brooks, Sam Buckley and Patrick Lyons did well.
