Town Mourns Victims Of Gap Of Dunloe Tragedy

The town of Killarney is in a state of shock this week following a tragic accident at the Gap of Dunloe which claimed the lives of two North American tourists. Rosalynd Joy Few (64) and Normand Larose (62) were killed when the jaunting car in which they were travelling fell from the road into a 20-foot ravine. The jarvey was not seriously injured but is said to be traumatised by the incident. Arizona native Rosalyn and her Canadian partner Normand were in Killarney with family. The party of six, which included Rosalyn’s daughter, son-in-law and two grandchildren, were travelling

up the Gap together on separate traps, although it is believed that the other family members did not witness the accident. Emergency services were notified just before 2pm on Monday and quickly rushed to the scene but, tragically, the couple had died instantly. The horse that was pulling the cart suffered serious injuries and was subsequently put down. Speaking on Monday, Paul O’Neill, President of the Killarney Chamber of Tourism and Commerce, said the people of Killarney were “shocked and saddened” by the incident.

“The Gap of Dunloe is one Ireland’s most popular tourist destinations, a place that brings joy to tourists the world over, and we are devastated that a visit to it by this couple would end in such tragic circumstances,” he said. “The people of Killarney extend our heartfelt sympathies to all affected by this tragedy and will do whatever we can to support the family during this very sad time.” On Tuesday, the local community in conjunction with the ponymen at the Gap of Dunloe held a touching service near Kate Kearney’s Cottage to pay their respects to the victims. A book of

Locals Remember Popular Publican Tadhg Tributes have poured in this week following the sad passing of popular Killarney publican Tadhg Corkery. Tadhg ran the well-liked Corkery’s Bar on high Street with his wife Joan for over forty years before passing the reins to his children, Jerome, Mary and Tadhg, in 2009. He had taken over from his own father back in 1967. Corkery’s, which has been a Killarney institution since 1946, was recently taken over by Alan Breen, John O’Sullivan and Kieran O’Leary. Tadhg died peacefully following a short illness on Monday, surrounded by family in University Hospital Kerry. He is sadly missed by his wife and three children, granddaughter Ciara, daughter-in-law Aoife, brothers-in-law, nephews and nieces, grand nephews, grand nieces, relatives in Kerry and Canada and many friends.

Last Week’s Article I have to say that I was really heartened by the response to last week’s article on the Belfast rape trial. Sometimes when you write something you’re not sure how it’s going to be received but a lot of people seemed to agree with what I was saying. A number of readers contacted me with kind words and the general reaction online was overwhelmingly positive. Your comments are always appreciated - especially if they’re nice. On a serious note, it’s great when people react to what you write because even if they disagree with you, at least you’re creating dialogue. If I’m ever wrong or talk rubbish I expect to be called out on it. It’s all part of it. If you have any comments, send them to newsdesk@killarneyadvertiser.ie. I will read and consider them all. Even the mean ones.

DO WE REALLY NEED A SECOND CINEMA?

Words: Adam Moynihan News that Killarney is to get a second cinema has caused quite a stir over the past couple of days with strong opinions on both sides of the divide. While some have welcomed the move, others have questioned the need of another cinema in a town of Killarney’s size. The new five-screen cinema will be located on the site of the old Torc Great Southern Hotel on the Park Road, opposite Arshanavooley housing estate. The two-storey building will consist of 2,500 square metres, a restaurant spanning both floors and 200 parking spaces. It will be operated by Omni-

plex, the company behind the cinema in Tralee. The largest screen will be a premium large format (PLF) screen with 301 seats. The second largest will have 115 seats and the remaining four will provide 95 seats each. Kerry County Council initially refused planning for the new facility on the grounds that it would affect the tourism product and the night-time economy of the town. They also claimed it would lead to unsustainable single-car trips. An Bórd Pleanála subsequently overturned that decision, however, and it now appears as though the new

development will be going ahead. Announcing details of the development, the planning officer claimed the new cinema “would not seriously injure the amenities of the area”. Generally speaking, the move has not been greeted positively by the people of Killarney. In a poll carried out on the Killarney Advertiser Facebook page, 64% of respondents said the new cinema was not a good idea (at time of going to print). It certainly seems like a strange decision. We already have a good cinema in Killarney. Do we really need another? It’s great that a site which has been

vacant for a long time is finally being put to use, but surely they could have thought of something a bit more original. If nothing else, the new development lacks entrepreneurial spirit. Cluain Fhionnáin To Close “Imminently” The Cluain Fhionnáin facility in Ballydribeen, which is currently home to 12 adults with intellectual disabilities, is to close “imminently” according to a report published this week by the Health Information and Quality Authority (HIQA). Based on an inspection that was carried out in December 2017, HIQA found non-compliance in a number of categories, including ‘safe and suitable premises’ and ‘health and safety’. The centre is also described as “institutional in nature” and it is stated that it “did not meet the needs of the residents”. According to the report: “The provider’s own audit report of October 2017 referred to the centre as ‘bleak’, ‘dated’ and ‘in a poor state of repair’. Inspectors found that this assessment continued to be accurate.” The close has been confirmed by Cork Kerry Community Healthcare, who say they welcome the report’s findings. “We acknowledge and accept that the building and the service at Cluain Fhionnáin are no longer fit for purpose,” said Gabrielle O’Keeffe, Head of

Social Care with Cork Kerry Community Healthcare. “A huge amount of work has been undertaken with residents, families and other stakeholders to move towards its closure. In the interim, significant work has been done in this centre to ensure that safe and appropriate care is provided for all residents.” Cluain Fhionnáin has long been slat-

ed for closure but it now appears as though it will finally shut its doors in 2018, as soon as the remaining residents move on. “Substantial work has been undertaken to help residents move to more suitable homes in the community, and we are delighted that 16 residents have already moved to their new homes, Cork Kerry Community Healthcare said in a

statement. “As the remaining residents will move to new homes this year, we are happy to now confirm that the centre will close by the end of this year. “We accept the remaining issues highlighted in today’s report, and work was already underway on many of the matters raised by HIQA. The report also recognises the significant changes made last year to the way care is provided at Cluain Fhionnan which has had a very positive impact on the lives of residents. The report states that “residents were experiencing a better quality of life than before despite living in an institutional setting” and also highlights “positive and enriching” changes for residents. We would like to thank the staff involved in this work. They added that despite the imminent closure, substantial work has been done to address any issues identified in this and other HIQA inspections. For example, they say, a plan is in place to have additional staff working at the centre at night, and additional support from a social care worker and a psychologist has been arranged.

TOWNTALK Ian To Benefit From Inspirational Nora All-Ireland GAA Golf Challenge Steals The Show Brave Killarney teenager Ian O’Connell has thanked organisers of the All-Ireland GAA Golf Challenge for selecting him as the 2018 beneficiary of the innovative grassroots fundraiser. Club teams from all over the country meet every year between the All-Ireland hurling and football finals for a two-day tournament in aid of a worthy cause. Teams of four cost €800 and entry is open to all members of the GAA. This year’s competition will take place in Monaghan. 16-year-old Ian, a member of Spa GAA club, was seriously injured when he fell from his bike last summer. He is currently paralysed from the shoulders down and organisers say they have already made a commitment to Ian’s family to provide them with a state-ofthe-art wheelchair accessible car. “I just want to say from the bottom of my heart, thanks so much to everyone involved in the All-Ireland GAA Golf Challenge. You have

no idea how much this means to me.” If you would like to make a donation, offer a prize for auction on the night, or get in touch with the organisers, you can find out more at the All-Ireland GAA Golf Challenge Facebook page, visit www. gaagolf.com or follow Twitter updates @ GolfGAA.

Inspirational Killarney woman Nora Kelly captured the hearts of the nation last weekend when she appeared on RTÉ’s Late Late Show to celebrate her 90th birthday. Nora, who was joined in the front row by all of her 19 children, explained that she thought number 12 would be her last but remarkably went on to have another seven. One of the siblings live in the United Kingdom, but the rest live in Ireland. When host Ryan Tubridy introduced all of her 19 children, Nora drew raucous laughter when she quipped, “I think there are a few more up the back.”

Fundraiser

Funds Needed For Defiant Dainora

Friends and family of Dainora Berzina have issued a desperate appeal for donations to help fund potentially life-saving therapy. Dainora, who has lived in Killarney for 10 years and is originally from Lithuania, was diagnosed with breast cancer in 2016 and unfortunately, despite two years of chemotherapy, the cancer has now spread to her lungs, bones, liver and skin and has become inflammatory. Doctors have given Dainora five months to live but she is not willing to accept this prognosis. Her husband Rinalds says the family are hoping to raise €20,000 to help pay for next generation immunotherapy in Germany. The couple have two children, Emilija (12) who is a pupil in St Oliver’s National School and Gabija (23) who studies science in CIT. On Monday, April 16 at 8pm, Santa Ignace will be playing the greatest classics of all time – Beethoven Moonlight Sonata, Liszt Mephisto Waltz, Rachmaninov Sonata No 2 and Chopin ballade No 4 – at the Brehon Hotel in Killarney. Santa, who is currently a Piano Lecturer at the Cork School of Music, was nominated by her professor Jan Čap and honoured to start a 10-month Female Conducting Programme at the National Concert Hall, Dublin, which is specifically designed to promote female conductors in Ireland. The course is led by world-renowned conductors such as Alice Farnham (Welsh National Youth Opera), David Brophy (RTÉ Concert Orchestra) and Bobby Houlihan. The course will conclude with participants conducting Beethoven Symphony No 1 and Warlock Capriol Suite on June 27. Santa recently also applied for an external Conducting Masterclass in St Petersburg, Russia with world renowned conductor Maestro Korchmar (conducting method of Ilya Musin). She was very pleased to be accepted as an active participant, which gave her an opportunity to conduct symphony orchestra at the concert for the first time. On April 1, she was con-

ducting Rachmaninov Piano Concerto No 2 and Mozart Symphony No 40 at the Assembly Hall in St Petersburg. Another opportunity to conduct symphony orchestra for Santa will present itself to Santa at the International Berlin Masterclasses where she will be conducting selected pieces by Mendelsohn. Santa is also excited to be involved in the forthcoming Edinburgh Fringe Festival as a solo recitalist performing pieces by Chopin, Beethoven, Godowsky, Listz and Rachmaninov. And this coming summer, she will be recording her first CD which will include Passacaglia by Godowsky, Sonata No 2 by Rachmaninov and Four Ballades by Chopin. Tickets for her Brehon show are available at the door before the concert and funds raised will go towards the fees for the upcoming conducting masterclasses.

Fresh Calls For Multi-Storey Car Park In Town Centre Words: Adam Moynihan

As the busy tourism season gets into gear, further calls have been made for a solution to the town’s longstanding parking problem. Michael HealyRae TD recently threw his considerable weight behind the campaign, saying Killarney is ready for a multi-storey car park. “It is many years ago that the late former mayor of the town and then Councillor Dermot O’Callaghan suggested a multi-storey car park,” he said. “The only mistake that he made was he was approximately 25-30 years ahead of his time. “Of course, he was right. The town is ready for a multi-storey car park. Surface parking in a town that is as busy as Killarney is outdated and is a thing of the past. We have to wake up to this reality.” According to the TEIR 1 tourism report, which was released earlier this year, increasing the town’s parking was the number one recommendation made by visitors who were polled. Improving infrastructure/reducing traffic came in at number two. Parking was also cited as a major concern by Chamber members with 1 in 4 saying that the current situation was a barrier to tourism development. We here at the Killarney Advertiser have been beating this drum for quite some time. Would a multi-storey car park, like the one

drawn up by our designer above, be viable at the Glebe? The new Rock Road car park is a step in the right direction but many have voiced concerns that it is too far from the town centre. Residents on Countess Road, which is closer to the town centre, say that many people simply park for free outside their houses. In some instances, as our picture shows, these cars are blocking driveways. Not only does this highlight the lack of suitable parking in Killarney, it also shows how keen visitors to are to park in the centre of town. “We have the finest town, the best

of facilities, the beauty of a National Park adjacent to it, and great people working together to provide what is a first class service,” Healy-Rae added. “But we have to have the infrastructure in place to cater for the people that are and will be coming over the years. “We must remember that our locals are also suffering, with large queues of cars every day trying to manoeuvre around the town. We have excellent public representatives in our local authority and we all need to unite in addressing this most serious issue in the future.”

An international line-up of experts from the automotive and technology industries will gather in Killarney this May for Electronomous, the annual forum for topics including electric vehicles, connected car technology, autonomous vehicles, cyber security and more. The conference, organised by vehicle history and data expert Cartell.ie, will discuss how technology is changing all aspects of the automotive world including the rapid development of mobility solutions, as well as other key industry processes such as insurance, finance and sales. The main attraction of Electronomous is a panel of globally-renowned speakers, including Marcus Rothoff, Head of Volvo’s Autonomous Driving programme; Uwe Puetzschler, Head of Car2X at Nokia; Barry Napier, CEO of Cubic Telecom; and Gareth Dunsmore, Electric Vehicle Director with Nissan Europe, to name just a few. The event will be hosted by former Top Gear presenter and award-winning

motoring journalist Quentin Wilson. According to Jeff Aherne, Director of Cartell.ie: “Technology is disrupting all aspects of the motor industry. Electric is replacing combustion and Advanced Driver Assistance Systems (ADAS) are paving the way to autonomy. This is an opportunity for all those with an interest in the space to understand what is coming.” Commenting on the event, Quentin Wilson said: “Electronomous is a major future transport event with industry-leading speakers, experts and fascinating debates. If you’re interested in the new era of personal mobility, it’s unmissable.” Some of the confirmed attendees for Electronomous 2018 include Volkswagen, IBM, Toyota, BMW, Honda, Applegreen, Valeo, TomTom, Audatex, the European Council for Automotive R&D (EUCAR) and the International Energy Agency (IEA). The event will begin with a high-profile ‘Electric Drive’ from Dublin to Killarney on the afternoon

of May 2, with TV & Motoring broadcaster Kirsteen O’Sullivan leading a fleet of electric vehicles on a 300km road trip in the company of motoring journalists and special guests. The drive will give members of the public a chance to see the range and capabilities of EVs for themselves. Electronomous will also feature a series of pop-up ‘Tell Talks’ over the course of the event, offering a deep dive into a range of automotive/technology issues in the company of international experts. Electronomous 2018 takes place at the INEC, Killarney, Co. Kerry, on May 2 & 3. Tickets are available from www.electronomous.com.

Excitement is building for the Kerry ETB Further Education and Training Event of the year as the list of live skill demonstrations and event activities continues to grow. The event takes place on Thursday, April 19 from 11am-6pm at the Brandon Hotel Tralee. A huge apprenticeship display will show what is involved in the high demand welding and fabrication area, plumbing, motor mechanics, as well as for electricians and carpenters. The letter carving, stone carving, clay modelling, stone balancing and stonewall construction display is one of the annual showstoppers. Foodies will love the pop-up restaurant with light bites served all day, a Dingle Bay Bouillabaisse Demonstration at lunchtime, followed by the timed Two Egg Omelette Eggstravoganza. Anyone aspiring to get involved in radio or podcasting as a career can try voicing a radio commercial and have the finished item emailed to them. Post Leaving Certificate courses are also of huge interest to both mature students and young people who increasingly chose PLC as a pre-university foundation year to sample a new vocational area before committing to a degree. This year, gaming and fashion design has been added. Adult education courses such as VTOS and Youthreach, with their built-in career guidance, academic, personal and childcare supports, are a great option for many people, especially as these are available countywide and even have a Leaving Certificate

option for adults in North Kerry. Anyone with literacy issues can confidentially find out about courses in reading, writing, numeracy, English language for speakers of other languages and family learning. This year Hugh Culloty Expert has sponsored three Lenovo Tab 7 Essential Tablets as spot prizes for winners of the Orienteering Treasure Hunt that will be run at the event by Kerry ETB’s Cappanalea Outdoor Education & Training Centre. Keep an eye out also for social media competitions. Those looking for information on student finance, courses, careers or supports for students will have free access to professional career guidance and information staff as well as SUSI and Intreo. To get there, Local Link Kerry are running special buses to the event. So keep an eye out on social media for bus times from South Kerry, West Kerry and Castleisland as well as event information. And, of course, there are plenty of evening and part-time BTEI choices too for people who want to upskill, are considering a complete career change or just want to pursue a personal interest. In fact, employers, too, are invited to find out what is available to them and their staff. This event brings together the countywide offerings of Kerry ETB from the five rural adult education centres, Further Education Colleges, the ETB Training Centre and community education courses that are run in over 100 Kerry parishes.

During the course of the war he was instrumental in saving the lives of more than 6,500 anti-Fascists, Allied escapees, Jews and many others by hiding them from the Gestapo in a number of safe houses and convents throughout Rome. On the day Rome was liberated, June 4, 1944, his organisation was still successfully hiding almost 4,000 people, despite the efforts of the Gestapo to recapture them. After WW2 Monsignor O’Flaherty received many honours including Commander of the British Empire and the US Medal of Freedom. Cullina’s Cool Coasters Ms Jemma Doyle’s 4th class in Cullina NS Beaufort recently built a highly successful class business called ‘Cool Coasters’. In conjunction with the Junior Entrepreneur Programme, Ms Doyle completed several different educational activities with her class to enable them to design, create and build a fantastic class business. The products sold consisted of creative, colourful and unique coasters. These coasters were sold in sets and the children helped create, package and sell the products to ensure a profit was made for the whole class to enjoy.

The children learned a great deal about product design, presentation of new ideas to investors, entrepreneurship, finance, marketing, customer service and sales. All this hard work culminated in a wonderful Showcase Day that was held in their classroom on March 9 where the whole school community were invited to view and purchase their products. The response was fantastic and all products were completely sold out on the day which encouraged the class to take new orders and even create more! Watch out for these future entrepreneurs!

St Francis Special School: A wonderful place of learning St Francis Special School in Beaufort is a wonderful place of learning which caters for pupils assessed to have a moderate or severe/profound learning disability from age 4 to 18. The school operates during regular school hours and is subject to the Department of Education standards. St. Francis provides for students on the autistic spectrum as well as those who have physical, medical or sensory difficulties. “We try our best to support the families and provide a meaningful education to the children, which they’re entitled to,” said Principal Liam Twomey. “We have a lot of excellent facilities which you wouldn’t get in any other school.” Boasting remarkable resources such as: organic gardens, a specialised playground, sensory room, occupational therapy room, dining room (where pupils receive a hot lunch daily) and access to a hydrotherapy pool - stu-

dents at St Francis have the very best amenities at their disposal. Families can also avail of the ‘Home from Home’ after school project, which takes place in Ballydowney. “The school remains open during the month of July for qualifying pupils,” Liam explains. “About 85% of our pupils are entitled to spend an extra month in the school.” St Francis has a very healthy staff/ student ratio. There are currently 50 students, 10 class teachers, 24 special needs assistants, an onsite school nurse and four parttime teachers for music, art, PE and cookery. School staff work with the KIDS (Kerry Intervention & Disability Service) multi-disciplinary team to provide physiotherapy, speech and language therapy and occupational therapy in school. The school also facilitates private speech and language therapies as well as music therapy.

As well as the great work that is done on campus, students also take part in integration projects with other schools such as Killorglin Community College, Loreto Primary School, Holy Cross Mercy and Milltown Secondary School to help prepare them for adult life. The school is holding an Open Day on Thursday, April 26 from 10am-3pm and Liam is inviting all interested parents and children to come along and check it out. “We would like to invite people to come and visit us and if parents feel that their child would benefit from our services, we’d be very glad to have them,” said Liam. “They can come and have a look around and see if St Francis might be right for them. We’re committed to working with parents and families to provide a positive educational experience for all of our pupils.”

A Weekly Round-Up Of News + Views From Kerry And Around

Commissioner Gave Solicitor Incorrect Information On McCabe Solicitor Gerald Kean has told the Disclosures Tribunal that former garda commissioner Martin Callinan gave him incorrect information about Sgt Maurice McCabe, which he then repeated on RTÉ Radio. Mr Kean said he spoke to Mr Callinan five times before he appeared on RTÉ’s Marian Finucane Show on January 26, 2014. Four of the calls took place the day before the programme, and one in the morning before the show. He said Mr Callinan told him that Sgt McCabe had not co-operated in “any shape or form” with the penalty points investigation conducted by Inspector John O’Mahoney. On the programme, Mr Kean also said that he understood that whistleblowers had not co-operated in any shape or form

with the O’Mahoney investigation. Mr Kean said Mr Callinan also told him that Sgt McCabe was obstructive and had breached the Data Protection Act. Sgt McCabe was never asked to co-operate with the O’Mahoney investigation. Mr Kean’s comments on the show have given rise to a defamation action taken by Sgt McCabe against RTÉ and Mr Kean. In a letter to the tribunal, Mr Kean said the case against him had been dropped and he had not paid any compensation or costs but had offered an apology. Counsel for the tribunal, Diarmaid McGuinness, asked Mr Kean if he was acting as a sur-

rogate for Mr Callinan. Mr Kean said he did not see that at the time but he could understand how someone might feel he was a mouthpiece. He said he believed he had access to someone who he saw at the time as beyond reproach, and he believed that what he was told was correct.

Cops Say Missing Marijuana Was “Eaten By Mice” Eight Argentine police officers have been dismissed for blaming missing drugs on mice. Investigators discovered 540kg (1,191lb) of marijuana missing from a police warehouse in Pilar, north-west of Buenos Aires. The city’s former police commis-

sioner, Javier Specia, and fellow officers told a judge the drugs were “eaten by mice”. Forensic experts doubted mice would see the drugs as food, and would have probably died if they had eaten it. A spokesperson for Judge Adrián González Charvay said that accord-

ing to experts at Buenos Aires University, “mice wouldn’t mistake the drug for food” - and even if they did, “a lot of corpses would have been found in the warehouse”. The police officers will now testify in front of the judge on 4 May. The court will decide if the drugs

Trump Corner National Enquirer Paid Trump Doorman $30K To Stay Quiet Eight months before the company that owns the National Enquirer paid $150,000 to a former Playboy Playmate who claimed she’d had an affair with Donald Trump, the tabloid’s parent company made a $30,000 payment to a less famous individual: a former doorman at one of the real estate mogul’s New York City buildings. The New Yorker and the Associated Press say that National Enquirer publisher American Media Inc. paid $30,000 in late 2015 to Dino Sajudin, a former doorman at a Trump building, to prevent him from publicising a rumour that Donald Trump fathered a child out of wedlock. Saju-

Never fails to entertain

din told the tabloid he had heard Trump fathered a child with an employee in the late 1980s, according to the reports. In a practice called “catch and kill,” the publication bought the exclusive rights to Sajudin’s story and then buried it as a favour to Trump, the reports said. Ronan Farrow, the author of the New Yorker story, told CNN’s “New Day” on Thursday that the order to stop the reporting came from David Pecker, the publisher of the National Enquirer and Trump’s friend. “This is about the most powerful people in the country having the ability to silence and change the news narrative at will,” Farrow said. “I think the public should know that.”

are missing due to “expedience or negligence”. A 6,000kg haul of marijuana has been in storage at the warehouse for the past two years but Mr Specia’s successor, Emilio Portero, noticed the missing drugs when he took over the commissioner role.

Midlands Rebranded As The Hidden Heartlands Fáilte Ireland has unveiled a new tourism campaign for the centre of the country, rebranding the midlands as ‘Ireland’s Hidden Heartlands’ as a way to boost tourism in the area. This new brand has been created to work alongside other brands that Fáilte Ireland has created in order to market various parts of the country, such as the Wild Atlantic Way and Ireland’s Ancient East. A focus on the River Shannon, the development of new food networks and trails and a creation of new walking hubs are part of the campaign to attract a larger number of visitors. The plan is to entice visitors with the area’s walkways and lakes, and the campaign will promote activities like walking, cycling, fishing and boating. The area covered extends from Leitrim down to East Clare, including Longford, Roscommon and East Galway, and parts of Westmeath, Cavan, North Tipperary and Offaly. The area will become a tourism

development zone, with Fáilte Ireland initially investing €2 million to develop the region and for marketing campaigns. Further investment will follow, the organisation says. The River Shannon will be a central focus of the brand, and Fáilte Ireland is developing a ‘Shannon Masterplan’ to drive tourism areas on and around the river and in surrounding towns. The area overlaps in parts with Ireland’s Ancient East, with businesses in those areas told to choose what branding suits them best.

Parkland Teacher Left Loaded Gun In Toilet

A teacher from the Florida high school where 17 people were shot dead two months ago has been arrested after leaving his gun in a public toilet. Sean Simpson (43) absentmindedly left the loaded weapon inside a cubicle, says Broward County Sheriff’s Office. It was found by a homeless man who fired a bullet into the wall before Mr Simpson snatched it from his hands. The Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School teacher previously said he was open to the idea of arming teachers. Mr Simpson told police on Sunday he realised he had left the

legally registered pistol in the toilet at the Deerfield Beach Pier after hearing a single gunshot. After running back to the bathroom, the science teacher encountered a homeless man holding the gun, who, he added, appeared drunk. Police arrested Mr Simpson and Joseph Spataro, 69, at the scene. Mr Simpson was charged with failing to safely store a firearm, and was released after paying a $250 cash bond. Mr Spataro, who told police he fired the Glock 9mm handgun to see if it was loaded, was charged with firing a weapon while intoxicated and trespassing.

Burned Down House Valued At $800K

‘Sexual Assault List’ Found In Cork School An investigation has been launched into the posting of a so-called ‘sexual assault list’ in the toilets of a secondary school in County Cork. The list, which appeared on the wall of the male toilets at Davis College in Mallow, contained a number of girls’ names. Above the list reads ‘the girl with the most ticks will be sexually assaulted’. The issue came to light when a concerned parent contacted Red FM.

In a statement, Davis College says it is taking the matter very seriously - and that the list was removed as soon as they were made aware of it. It goes on to say the safety and well-being of their students is their top priority, and all students named on the list have been spoken to. It says an internal review is underway and if those responsible for the list are identified they will be disciplined.

Irish Facebook Users Get New ‘Fake News’ Tips Facebook users in Ireland will see a new educational notice on their news feeds from today, aimed at helping them to spot fake news. The company said it wants to improve news literacy, particularly in the run up to the Eighth Amendment referendum in May. The notice brings users to more information and advice on how to recognise if a piece of content is false. These include checking the URL of the site, investigating the source of the news and seeking additional reports on the topic. Recently the firm has been embroiled in controversy around the use of its platform to

spread fake news. The social network said the problem runs counter to its mission to connect users with the stories they find meaningful. As a result, Facebook said it is its goal to help people make more informed decisions when they encounter false news. The advice was developed with the help of First Draft, a US based non-profit organisation that aims to increase skills and standards in reporting and sharing of information on the internet. Similar notices have been appearing in national newspapers here in recent days.

France Has “Proof” Of Syrian Chemical Attack

A Silicon Valley real estate agent is defending the price of a fire-ravaged home that is listed on the market for $800,000. The San Jose house, which sits on a 5,800 square foot lot in California’s San Francisco Bay Area, was the site of a major fire two years ago. San Francisco housing prices have risen dramatically in recent years due to proximity to nearby technology firms. The listing, announced on the

agent’s Facebook page, quickly drew criticism. “Unchecked free market capitalism,” one commenter complained. “Posting a dumpster with a roof in Facebook for 800,000 is begging to get trolled,” another social media user wrote. But Willow Glen Charm real estate agent Holly Barr said the land is what makes the property so valuable, as well as its proximity to nearby technology companies such as Facebook and Google.

France’s President Emmanuel Macron says he has “proof” that the Syrian government attacked the town of Douma with chemical weapons last weekend. He said he would decide “in due course” whether to respond with air strikes. Western states are thought to be preparing for missile strikes in response to the alleged attack. In Russia, Syria’s main military ally, Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov urged against “any steps which could lead to an escalation of tensions”. US President Donald Trump, who said

on Wednesday that missiles were “coming”, has now tweeted that he “never said when”. It “could be very soon or not so soon at all”, said the president, who has cancelled a planned trip to allow him to stay in the US with his defence secretary, and has been canvassing support for strikes from the leaders of France and the UK. Also on Thursday, US Secretary of Defense Jim Mattis told a congressional panel: “I believe there was a chemical attack and we are looking for the actual evidence.”

You deserve some extra special treatment, says Jill Duggan of Killarney Toning & Beauty Studio

Treat Yourself To A Massage Indian head massage Indian head massage is a form of treatment that works on the muscular tissues of the scalp, neck, shoulders, upper back, upper arms and face. These areas hold much of the stress we accumulate in day to day living. Some symptoms are tension in the scalp, neck and shoulders with heaviness, tightness, muscle fatigue, headaches and migraine. Head massage is invigorating, uplifting and revitalising. Hot Stone Massage Hot stone therapy benefits include improved circulation, stress reduction and relief from pain associated with strained muscles, carpal tunnel syndrome, and muscle spasms. Another common effect is the improvement in the rate of elimination of toxins from the body. With the elimination of waste from the body

Recipe of the Week

and reduction in stress, many clients notice improvements in energy levels after a single hot stone treatment. Reflexology Reflexology is a natural healing art and is the practice of applying precise hand and finger pressure to specific points on the feet to stimulate the body’s own healing system. These points are believed to correspond to specific organs and structures in the body. Reflexology is a non-invasive, safe and effective treatment. It induces deep relaxation, improved sleep pattern and improved circulation. To purchase gift tokens or to make a booking, call Jill on 064 6632966.

Freshly Baked Scones

Recipe • • • • • • • •

450g self-raising flour, plus more for dusting ¼ tsp salt 2 tsp baking powder 100g butter cut into cubes 50g caster sugar 175ml milk 1 tsp vanilla extract 1 Egg

Method • Heat oven to 220C/fan 200C/gas 7. •Tip the flour into a large bowl with the salt and baking powder, then mix. •Add the butter, then rub in with your fingers until the mix looks like breadcrumbs. •Add in the sugar. •Put the milk into a jug and heat in the microwave for about 30 secs until warm, but not hot.

•Add the vanilla, then set aside for a moment. •Make a well in the dry mix, then add the liquid and combine it quickly with the tips of your fingers – it will seem pretty wet at first. •Scatter some flour onto the work surface and tip the dough out. •Dredge the dough and your hands with a little more flour, then fold the

dough over 2-3 times until it’s a little smoother. Pat into a round tin about 4cm deep. •Take a 5cm cutter (a smooth edged cutter is preferable), dip it into some flour and portion out the mix ( makes 8) •Brush a little beaten egg over the scones •Bake at 200C for 12mins

Garden Magic Give The Art Of Bonsai A Try Last week I wrote about the occasional geranium which was on offer – in my opinion, much too early. This week I can write about the proliferation thereof… Everywhere I go, I see geraniums, busy lizzies, petunias and, yes, I have seen marigolds! Unless you have a warm, sunny place to put them, don’t waste your time or money! Keep in mind also, that these plants have been forced on under unnatural conditions, such as artificial light, warm temperatures and a lot of fertiliser. Even if they do grow in your home, while they await transplanting outside, they will be prone to aphid attack, especially whitefly, and fungus will also be an ongoing problem for these plants. Best to wait for stronger, more resilient stock a month later. Which will also come with a much smaller carbon footprint! If you are anxious to start planting up pots, opt for a long term investment. For example, Cordyline Southern Splendour, or Torbay Dazzler are fantastic centrepieces in pots year round. Evergreen grasses can look well now, and stunning when incorporated into a floral display. Topiary plants are also a good choice, and their austere forms can be softened with cascades of blooms. Small trees such as Coronet apples are also worthwhile. They will blossom in spring and provide you with a crop of apples in the autumn. Japanese maples will also thrive in pots – why not

try your hand at creating bonsai plants? Bonsai in Chinese means ‘tree in a pot’, and this is exactly what it is. It is the art of creating nature in miniature form. Creating a bonsai tree is something which requires patience and diligence, and is ideally suited to those who love container gardening, or who have little time. What can be achieved is amazing! Decide whether you want your bonsai indoors or outdoors. If choosing an indoor plant, a ficus is a good candidate. Outdoors you are not that restricted. Traditionally cedars, pine and maples have been used, as well as flowering cherries or crab apple varieties. Lately, cotoneaster is popular. You can either grow the plant yourself from seed or cuttings, or buy the appropriate plant in a garden centre, keeping in mind that bonsai pots are normally small and shallow. There are three components to bonsai growing: pruning, wiring and root pruning. Root pruning is done in the dormant season. It is something which applies to many plants grown permanently in pots. Plants do better if their roots are young and fresh, even if they are well watered and fed. So, tease out the roots and prune out the old ones. Pruning of the branches is also done in the dormant season, though depending on your plant you may also need to prune in summer to prevent excessive growth.

Corsica Win Boosts Ogier’s WRC Lead Sébastien Ogier claimed his third FIA World Rally Championship event in four rounds with a faultless home win in Corsica. The Frenchman led the Corsica - Tour de Corse from start to finish to win the three-day asphalt challenge by 36.1 seconds in his M-Sport Ford Fiesta. After also winning in Monte-Carlo and Mexico, he heads the 2018 standings by 17 points in his quest for a sixthstraight drivers’ title. Ogier made his intentions clear by winning Friday

morning’s opening stage of the demanding event, known popularly as the Rally of 10,000 Corners. Three fastest times out of four earned him a lead of more than half a minute and afforded him the luxury of managing his pace across Saturday and Sunday. Kris Meeke and Paul Nagle’s Corsican challenge ended abruptly on Saturday’s final asphalt stage as they were fighting to pull clear of Thierry Neuville in the battle for second place. Their C3 WRC left the road at high speed following an uncharacteristic

Range Rover Sport SVR Faster Than Ferrari On China’s Most Dangerous Road Land Rover has claimed its recently updated Range Rover Sport SVR has set a new record climb of China’s Tianmen Mountain road. The road, located in the Chinese Hunan Province, stretches over 11.3km and consists of 99 corners that snake and coil up an altitude of 1,100 metres. Setting a time of just nine minutes and 51 seconds, at an average speed of 68.8km/h, the 2018 Rangie SVR comprehensively beat the 10:31 time set by a Ferrari 458 Italia back in 2016. Benefiting from 2018 model-year updates, the Range Rover Sport SVR that set the record came equipped with the more muscular 416kW (up 14kW) version of the firm’s mighty supercharged 5.0-litre V8, allowing it to now hit 100km/h in just 4.5 seconds.

mistake with a pace note, calling a fifth-gear left-hand corner instead of the correct third-gear left-hand bend. Both men avoided injury in the accident but, with their car well off the road, their challenge was over early. The crew restarted Sunday to finish 9th overall. Nine-time champion Sebastian Loeb had similar fate on Friday, crashing out of contention. The Citroen C3 showed good pace over the weekend with three stage wins. The next round is Rally Argentina on April 26.

That’s still a long way off the performance offered by the 419kW Ferrari 458 Italia that, thanks to its lighter weight, can storm to 100km/h in less than three seconds. Offsetting the considerable weight of the Range Rover, the Sport SVR was driven by professional Formula E racer and Panasonic Jaguar Racing driver, Ho-Pin Tung. The original Ferrari record was set by Fabio Barone Mihaela, the president of the Italian car-maker’s fan club. Racer Tung was the same daredevil driver tasked with the recent Land Rover stunt that involved a Range Rover Sport, this time the plug-in hybrid P400e climbing the 999 steps to Heaven’s Gate, which sits at the summit of the Tianmen Mountain road.

When it arrives, its makers claim the small Smart ForTwo-sized pure-electric vehicle will forever change the way mass-produced cars are made. At least that’s what Chinese company Polymaker and Italy-based X Electrical Vehicle (XEV) hope, when its first model, the LSEV, goes on sale. Created almost entirely using 3D printing tech that builds parts from the ground up, layer by layer, the benefits of the technique perfected by Polymaker is that waste is dramatically reduced. The 3D printing also ensures that the number of plastic parts in the car will be dramatically pared back from 200 pieces (using conventional car making processes) to just 57. The LSEV makers say that large car makers will more and more rely on 3D printing because not only does it reduce waste, but less energy is involved and, in return, there’s less of an environmental impact in car production.

25TH & 29TH ANNIVERSARY

BREEN

BUCKLEY

In loving memory of the late Denis Breen who’s 63rd birthday occurs on the 11th April 2018 and David Breen whose 25th Birthday occurs on the 16th April 2018, Late of Hazelwood Drive, Killarney.

In loving memory of my dear father Jerry Buckley late of 12 St. Brendan’s Place who died on the 16th of April 1993 and my dear brother John Buckley late of 65 St. Brendan’s Place who died on the 15th of April 1989.

Happy birthday to my wonderful husband and my son and to our lovely Dad and Brother.

The happy hours we once enjoyed, How sweet their memory still, But death has left a vacant place, This world can never fill.

We would have been celebrating with ye on yer special birthdays, but we visit yer graveside and pray to ye wish ye happy birthday. Remembering ye is easy, but missing ye is a heartache day and night, but know when our life’s journey is over, we will have our family chain linked up again. Ye always had a laugh, a joke, a time to care and share. Candles always burning, masses said for yer holy souls. Losing ye as a husband and a dad and our brother. We know the 2 twinkling stars shine at night in heaven, that’s our dad Denis and brother David, who shines down to say goodnight to all of us.

Sadly missed by Jeremiah, Patricia And family.

4TH ANNIVERSARY BUCKLEY

In loving memory of Jerh Buckley, late of Lismongane, Fossa, Killarney, who died on the 16th April, 2014.

At least we have good memories of ye, but rather have ye in our home, as ye were 2 very good people in our lives, that’s why God made ye. Yer remembered and loved and never forgotten, by your heartbroken family, Sheila, Mikey, De, Billy, Shilamary & Amy Breen. xxxxxxxxxxxx

They must have had a good reason, Or plan we do not know, For why they chose you.

6TH ANNIVERSARY

We didn’t want to let you go, But maybe heaven’s gardens Are more beautiful to view, Now that they’re being tended, By a special man like you.

CLIFFORD In loving memory of Frank Clifford late of Torc Terrace Killarney who died on 23rd of April 2012. R.I.P. We hold you close within our hearts And there you shall remain To walk with us throughout our lives Until we meet again So rest in peace dear loved one And thanks for all you’ve done We pray that God has given you The crown you’ve truly won. Sadly missed and always remembered by your loving son John.

Not a day goes by, When we don’t wipe away a tear, And wonder why the angels, Wouldn’t let us keep you here.

A quiet, loving family man, So thoughtful, warm and kind, The best, most giving Dad Anyone could every find. And all that we can do is hope That somehow you will know, Just how much you were loved And that we’ll always miss you. Sadly missed and lovingly remembered by Kathleen, Teddy, Demetria, Tim, Andrew, Cáitlin and Séarlait

COOPER

CREAN

In loving memory of Mary (Moll) Cooper

In loving memory of our dear husband, father and grandfather Con Crean late of Sliabh Luachra, Gneeveguilla who passed away on the 15th April 2007.

The family of the late Mary (Moll) Cooper, formerly of Droumcahan, Kenmare, Co. Kerry offers their heartfelt thanks to all for your support following the untimely passing of our loving sister, aunt, and grandaunt on the 29th March 2017. We were supported by family, relations, wonderful friends and neighbours. Many of you called to her home, attended the removal or the funeral. You provided us with support through your telephone calls, sent Mass cards or messages of condolences or contributed to her nominated charity – Kerry Cork Health Link Bus – or maybe said a quiet prayer. Your contributions to Kerry Cork Health Link Bus amounted to €1156.00. We extend a special word of thanks and appreciation to her good friend Rita who responded to her call in such a timely manner and who took on the role of contacting Moll’s family and neighbours; to Johnny and Gerard for their friendship over the years. We are very grateful to the Ambulance Crew who attended Moll at her home and spent a great deal of time with her. We acknowledge and appreciate the Coroner and Kenmare Gardai for their understanding on the night of Moll’s demise. We are grateful to Fr. Tom Crean and his co-concelebrants for the beautiful Mass and moving homily. We thank Stella and Aine for their beautiful singing in the Church and at the graveside. O’Connor’s Funeral Directors performed their duties with professionalism and sensitivity throughout the night and the following days. We wish to thank Johnny, Sean, Dermot, Maurice and Kevin for taking care of Moll’s final resting place in Old Kenmare. Many thanks to Una and her staff at Brooklane Hotel, who looked after us all so well during the funeral. To all of you, please accept this acknowledgement as a token of our gratitude. The Holy Sacrifice of the Mass will be offered for your intentions.

We seldom ask for miracles, But today just one would do, To have the front door open, And to see you walking through. We travel to your graveside, Some flowers we lay with care, But the hardest thing to do, Is turn and leave you there. Sadly missed by your son Ger and daughter-in-law Eileen. I’m sending a dove to heaven With a parcel on it’s wings Be careful how you open it It’s full of beautiful things It’s filled with a million kisses Wrapped up with a million hugs It’s from your daughter Yvonne Who sends it with all her love. Too good to be forgotten. Loved and missed by your daughter Yvonne, son-in-law Paudie and grandson Tommie. We lost a father with a heart of gold, How much we miss him Can never be told, He shared our troubles And helped us along, If we follow in his footsteps we will never go wrong. Lonely is the home without you, Life is not the same, All the world would be like heaven, If we could have you back again. Sadly missed and loved by your daughter Marion and son-in-law Donie. Grandad We’re sending you a kiss Up to the sky so blue So catch it Grandad it’s just for you. Missed by your grandchildren Danny, Ciaran and Yvonne.

NOVENA TO THE SACRED HEART

O St. Joseph, whose protection is so great, so strong, so prompt before the throne of God, I place in you all my interest and desires. O St. Joseph, do assist me by your powerful intercession, and obtain for me from your divine Son all spiritual blessings, through Jesus Christ, our Lord. So that, having engaged here below your heavenly power, I may offer my thanksgiving and homage to the most loving of Fathers. O, St. Joseph, I never weary contemplating you, and Jesus asleep in our arms; I dare not approach while He reposes near your heart. Press Him in my name and kiss His fine head for me and ask Him to return the kiss when I draw my dying breath. St. Joseph, Patron of departing souls pray for me. This prayer was found in the fiftieth year of Our Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ. In 1505 it was sent from the Pope to Emperor Charles when he was going into battle. Who ever shall read this prayer or hear it or keep it about themselves, shall never die a sudden death, or be drowned, nor shall be burned in any fire or shall be overpowered in battle. Say for nine mornings for anything you desire. It has never been known to fail, so be sure you really want what you ask for. In thanks for request granted.

Celtic Boss: Experience Will Stand

To Us In Munster Semi-Final Words: Adam Moynihan

Munster Junior Cup Semi-Final Pike Rovers v Killarney Celtic Sunday at 2.30pm (Limerick) Killarney Celtic face Pike Rovers in the semi-final of the Munster Junior Cup on Sunday and manager Eoghan Donnellan believes that his side’s experience in big games will stand to them in what will undoubtedly be one of the most important days in the history of the club. Celtic reached the semi-final of last year’s FAI Junior Cup and over the past the couple of seasons they’ve faced into some incredibly tough away ties the length and breadth of the country. Pike will provide another stern test and the Hoops will need all their big match know-how to get over the line and reach the final of this hugely prestigious tournament. “We’ve met all the top teams in the country,” Donnellan said. “We’ve been to Limerick. We played Ballynanty there last year and came away with a win, we went to Newmarket and came away with a win and we’ve beaten Janesboro. North End, who put us out of the FAI Junior this year, have reached the final of that competition. So look, we know we can match the best teams but you’ve got to turn up. It’ll be an intimidating enough atmosphere. We’ve got to make sure we give it our best.” The word from inside the camp is that preparations for the crunch fixture are going according to plan. The league leaders put five past Listowel last Sunday, despite being without the services of a few first team players, and their form in all competitions has been impressive to say the least.Celtic fans have followed their team all over Ireland throughout the past two seasons and Donnellan is hoping for another big travelling support on Sunday. “We have great supporters,” he said. “They’re very

vocal and it’s all positive stuff. They’re constantly praising the team and encouraging them. The more supporters we can get on Sunday, the better.” For information on the supporter’s bus, check out the Killarney Celtic Facebook page or contact Ramona on 087 6615532.

Walkovers

On the domestic scene, and in relation to the article I wrote last week, Donnellan’s side have had to deal with walkovers as much as anyone so I was interested in hearing his perspective on the issue. “I think it is a problem, to be fair,” he reflected. “You’re trying to prepare for different competitions and the more matches you have, I think it’s better for all teams. But a lot of clubs are under pressure with guys playing two sports. We’re now coming into the Club Championship period for the GAA teams so a lot of them are under pressure to play GAA over soccer at this time of the year.” “We have an all weather pitch, yet we’ve more home games left than anyone else,” he continued. “Our pitch was available all throughout the winter and we’d gladly take fixtures at any time at all.” “It’s disappointing for teams to give walkovers because there’s nothing to be gained from it. To be fair, the KDL are trying to do their best. They’ve said that if you give three walkovers you get relegated. But there’s nothing you can do. I’m involved with Killarney Celtic way back into the late 80s and early 90s and there was always a problem with teams not fulfilling fixtures.” So does the Celtic boss think that there’s any possi-

ble solution? “If there were more games played earlier on in the season, I think it would be beneficial for everyone. Last year we played the league final on July 3 and had basically 10 days off before we played the FAI Cup game. The season goes on too long in my view. The season should be wrapped up, like it is in most counties, by the end of May. At least then fellas are off for the summer and they can do whatever they need to do, take holidays or play football, and in September/October they’re back into the soccer world and there maybe isn’t as much GAA as there is in the summer months.” I couldn’t agree more. Last year felt like The NeverEnding Story and we were still hungover from our celebrations when we started back training. With only 8 active teams in the league this season, everyone should be finished far earlier. It will be interesting to see if it works out that way. Pics: Konrad Paprocki.

3-2 Dingle Bay Rovers Seán Fitzgerald Adam O’Rourke

Defeat would have more or less brought a premature end to our reign as champions of Kerry so there was a huge amount of relief when Derek O’Shea blew the final whistle on Sunday. Before kick-off, we were level in second with Dingle who had a game in hand so we knew we had to win. In a way, that helped. Don’t get me wrong, we’d much rather be in Celtic’s position right now but sometimes being in a ‘do or die’ situation has its advantages. It definitely simplifies things. If we didn’t win last weekend, we were finished. There’s none of this, “a draw wouldn’t be a bad result” craic. We were desperate to get the three points the last day and I think that showed. Fellas were really clued in and, by and large, we outplayed a team who beat us 6-1 two months ago. Will Courtney’s in-swinging free-kick was deflected in by a Dingle defender fairly early on (it was on target anyway so it’s Will’s goal) and I thought we were doing well. You’re never safe with a one-goal lead against Dingle, though, because they have players who can make something from nothing, and that’s exactly what happened for their equaliser.

They turned us over in midfield and Joe Sheehy clipped a perfect, 30-yard, cross-field pass to Seán Fitzgerald. Fitzgerald met the ball at the edge of the area and cushioned a delightful side-foot volley beyond Brian O’Connor. It was a savage goal in fairness. We responded well, however, and created plenty of very good chances in the 10-15 minutes before half time. Shane Lynch converted one of them from close range (another handy one for Lynch) but we were disappointed not to go in at the break 3 or 4-1 up. As Dingle pressed for an equaliser in the second half, they left big gaps at the back and we should have made more of our numerous counter attacks. With so much at stake, we were a bit nervy at 2-1. We definitely needed a third. Eventually, Ryan O’Carroll got in behind with around 10 minutes to go and showed great composure to evade the defender and finish. That should have been game over but it wouldn’t be an Athletic game if we didn’t make things as difficult as possible for ourselves. Adam O’Rourke pinged a volley into the top corner moments later - another

worldy - and the pressure was on again. We saw it out in the end and although there’s a lot more work to do, at least we’re still alive. I thought our central defensive trio of Paudie O’Connor, Aidan O’Mahony and Cillian O’Regan did very well. Mahony in particular won every single high ball that came near him. For a guy who hasn’t played much soccer in years he’s very good at judging headers and he obviously has the bravery and athleticism to go with it. Paudie was alert as always and Cillian has been playing great stuff. I know we failed to keep a clean sheet (again) but, to be fair, there was no defending the goals we conceded. They were top class. We were supposed to have Dynamos at home this Sunday in our third last league game of the season but it was called off midweek. Hopefully we can get a run of fixtures together over the next month or so. A bit of momentum would be great.

Final Spots Up For Grabs In Club Cham The group phase of the Club Championship reaches its conclusion this weekend with places in the finals – and relegation playoffs – on the line. In Group 1 of the Senior Club Championship, it’s all fairly straightforward as Dr Crokes go head-to-head with Austin Stacks in a straight shoot out for the top spot. Both sides have won their first two games and so find themselves joint top on four points heading into the deciding fixture. Crokes just about came out the right side of a close one in Strand Road last weekend and will be favourites to advance to another final, although it has to be said that Stacks’ championship form so far belies their newfound Division 2 status. At the foot of the table, winless Kerins O’Rahilly’s and An Ghaeltacht face a playoff to avoid a playoff when they meet in Gallarus. The loser will play the bottom placed team from Group 2 to see who will be relegated to intermediate level. In the event of a draw in either game, points difference will need to be used to decide the final standings. (The primary tie-breaking method is the outcome of the game between the two teams in question, but naturally that won’t work in the case of a draw). That means a draw will be enough to see Crokes through to the final (+16 compared to Stacks’ +8), and a draw against Rahilly’s will condemn An Ghaeltacht to a relegation playoff (-17 versus -7). Things are even more complicated in Group 2. Dingle currently lead the way on four points so victory over Legion in Páirc an Ághasaigh will make it three from three

and confirm their spot in the final. If Legion win, however, they will join Dingle on four points and top the group on head-to-head – but only if Rathmore fail to beat Kenmare. If that happens, Rathmore would be joint bottom with Kenmare and actually finish fourth on head-to-head. If Rathmore and Legion win (sorry, I’m even giving myself a headache here), then Dingle, Legion and Rathmore will all have four points and it will come down to points difference. Dingle are currently far better off in this regard so Legion would need to win by twelve or more to top the group. Rathmore would also need to win by at least eleven. Long story short, Dingle are firm favourites to finish first and Kenmare need to beat Rathmore to have any hope. In the Intermediate, Kilcummin and Spa can top their groups and book a place in the semi-finals with victory in their final group games against Brosna and Templenoe respectively. Glenflesk and St Mary’s, meanwhile, are already through to the last four. Down in the Junior Premier, Beaufort and Fossa have already confirmed their places in the semi-finals thanks to favourable results in Round 2. (For more on Fossa’s David Clifford-inspired victory over St Michael’s-Foilmore, see Sport p5.)

Clifford Hat-Trick Sends Fossa Through

Fossa are through to the last four of the Junior Premier Championship following a thoroughly impressive 3-12 to 2-8 win over St Michael’s-Foilmore on Sunday. David Clifford was the un-

doubted star of the show as the prodigious Kerry star registered a remarkable tally of 3-1, including a crucial clincher in the 57th minute. Keel’s victory over St Pat’s in the

other game means that Fossa cannot be caught in Group 3. Even if they lose their last game, they are guaranteed to finish first on headto-head regardless of who wins between Keel and Michael’s-Foilmore. Fossa led early on thanks to Clifford brothers Paudie and David - who stole in for his first goal - but Kerry player Mark Griffin netted to keep Ballyfoilmore in contention. It was 1-7 to 1-3 up at the break. Points from Tadgh O’Shea (two), Paudie Clifford and another goal from David re-established Fossa’s dominance in the third quarter and Fossa appeared to have one foot in the semi-final. Ballyfoilmore fought their way back into the game late in the day but the younger Clifford was on hand again to seal their fate, completing his hat-trick with yet another well-taken goal.

Beaufort also secured their place in the semi-finals with a three-point win over St Senan’s. The outcome of the other two groups far from clear-cut, especially Group 4 where Na Gaeil and Finuge will have to play again following the abandonment of their fixture last weekend. An unfortunate incident in the 20th minute left two Finuge players seriously injured and the referee was left with no option but to call the game off. We wish both lads a speedy recovery.

Ross Hotel Golf Society 40 Years And Driving On The Ross Golf Society, founded in the Ross Hotel in 1978, is Killarney’s oldest golf society and is celebrating its 40 years of existence with a special 40th Anniversary Reunion Outing on Killarney’s Killeen Course on June 9. The society welcomes new members and, in particular, the return of any former members and past captains. Golf societies abound nowadays. Many parishes, GAA clubs and bars have their own but in 1978 there was only one in Kerry: The Old Reserves in Tralee. The first impetus came from a group of senior caddies, all skilful golfers and Killarney members. After some discussion with some fellow club members, a small group met informally in the Ross Hotel and formed a society that would be open to members of any recognised golf club. Affiliation to the GUI followed some years later. Support from the Ross Hotel was readily forthcoming and to this day three generations of the Treacy family have generously provided assistance. Pádraig Treacy is still the president of the society. Among the founding group were Seán Counihan, Dermot Roche, Kieran O’Connor and the late Ian O’Leary. Kieran is still a member and has given unstinting service to the society down through the years. Ralph O’Connell joined the society in its early years and served as hard-working Hon. Secretary for close on 30 years. Described by Nick O’Brien in his 2007 Captain’s report as “the heart and soul of the society”, Ralph came to be a stalwart of the Ross, in his annual reports praising good golf or diligent committee work and at all times insisting on high standards. The immediate aims of the society were to promote the game of golf and provide more competitive golf than the club’s Sunday competitions

afforded at that time. Generous local sponsorship and competition entry fees - an average of 45 entries for nine competitions in 1986 - ensured that attractive prizes could be provided. Junior Finnegan’s Captain’s prize attracted 68 entries in 1988. The relaxed informality of society golf helped promising young golfers to improve their game and reduce their handicaps. AGM reports show that up to 50% of members won prizes during a season’s eight or nine competitions. The society was welcomed enthusiastically by Killarney members. By 1988 membership had grown to 86 with a waiting list of eight and Hon. Secretary, Ralph O’Connell, had to remind members that some clubs could not provide sufficient tee-times for the society. There were four women members, Maria O’Connor, Marguerita Mulcahy, Taal Burke and Dorothy Teskey, wife of fellow member Ron Teskey. The Society’s founding members, Seán Counihan, Kieran O’Conner, Dermot Roche and Ian O’Leary, were part of Killarney Golf Club’s 1977 Pierse Purcell-winning team - no doubt helping to prompt the founding of the Ross in 1978. The Society was also well represented in Killarney’s Barton Shield win in 1980. Killarney provided three outings every year and all the Kerry clubs were visited during the last forty years as, also, were Kanturk, Lee Valley, Fota, Macroom, Mallow and Cork Golf Club. A unique outing in the very early years was a visit to The Isle of Man, the details of which are lost in the mists of time. Another unique and highly successful outing was the visit to Ballykisteen, Co. Limerick, when stationmaster and long-time treasurer, Mike Leahy, booked us onto a rail carriage to Limerick Junction and a bus down the road to the golf course. A very enjoyable sing-song took place in the carriage on the way home.

However, the good times were destined not to last. Golf societies began to proliferate in the region and members could no longer afford membership of a club and two societies. Increased club green fees and a €15 charge on members of societies playing in their home club added to the expense. In the meantime Killarney Club competitions had increased in number and, as many members were now of senior vintage, the increasingly popular ‘Kerry Seniors Tour’ and the fortnightly Killarney Club Seniors satisfied their need for competitive golf. However, generation succeeds generation, and the sons of previous members or captains joined the Ross and became captains: Bernard O’Shea, Mike Stack, Seán O’Sullivan, Neil and John Coffey, thus bringing with them new and younger members giving promise of a brighter future for the Ross Hotel Golf Society.

At the helm today are: President - Pádraig Treacy Captain - Jim Morris Treasurer - Michael Leahy Secretary - Gary Browne

Why Does Everyone Hate Patrick Reed? Words: Adam Moynihan

Looking at the leader board on Saturday, this year’s Masters was shaping up to be a classic. The course was immaculate as always. McIlroy, Fowler, Rahm, Thomas, Stenson and Spieth were all in contention. There were Kerry jerseys everywhere. Then Patrick Reed came along and ruined everything. Normally when there’s a clear leader in a major, the closing few holes are a real love-in as commentators fall all over themselves to heap praise on the latest hero set to etch his name in the history books. The mood on Sunday couldn’t have been more different. Reed was in control throughout the closing stages but kind words were few and far between. You could practically hear the disappointment in Peter Alliss’ voice whenever Reed hit a green. Reed went to college in Augusta, and his parents live in the city, but patrons were far more vociferous in their

support of his rivals. Despite a late charge from Rickie Fowler, the American two-putted for the win on 18 and the most muted Masters victory of all time was complete. But why does everyone hate Patrick Reed? Well, you could say that he’s drawn it on himself. First off, Reed refers to himself as Captain America when competing in the Ryder Cup. I have tried to give myself many nicknames down through the years and speaking from experience I can confirm that people don’t like it. He also put his finger to his lips (to silence the home fans) after sinking a putt at Gleneagles and enjoyed the moment so much that he decided to put the silhouette of the image on his belt buckle. In 2014, Reed was caught on mic using a homophobic epithet when he threeputted at WGC event in Shanghai. Later that year, he

claimed that he was “one of the top five players in the world”. He hadn’t even played in a major. Reed already had earned a reputation for himself before leaving college. While attending Augusta State, his teammates allegedly caught him trying to cheat in a qualifying tournament. They also suspected him of stealing from the changing rooms. Reed denies the accusations. The Masters champion has a fractured relationship with his immediate family, which isn’t really anyone’s business to be fair. But when his wife gets his parents escorted off the course, as she reportedly did at the US Open in 2014, it’s bound to draw the wrong kind of attention. So maybe Peter Alliss was right to be gutted. Reed is now ranked number 11 in the world, however, so, like it or not, we could be seeing a lot more of the most unpopular man in golf.

Sebastian Vettel Wins Tense Sebastian Vettel has continued his dream start to 2018 with a second win to send Mercedes reeling in Bahrain. The German was able to successfully hold off Valtteri Bottas in the dying laps as the Finn rapidly closed the gap to inches by the final turn. Lewis Hamilton scored a place on the podium, searing ahead of the pack after starting ninth with a gear box penalty in qualifying. Red Bull suffered an early disaster with Daniel Ricciardo experiencing engine failure and Max Verstappen collecting a puncture, both exiting the race by the fifth lap. Kimi Raikkonen was forced to

the back of the pack after a stunning pit lane failure ended in a mechanic being hit by the Finn’s Ferrari. Raikkonen was given the green light to exit the pits too early after stopping for fresh tyres and collected the Scuderia crew member as he took off. Alarming footage showed the mechanic flip over Raikkonen’s rear left wheel and crumple over in pain. Ferrari reported the mechanic was taken to hospital as fears grew of a broken leg. Raikkonen was eventually forced out of the race following the terrifying incident.

Rugby News ... Words: Liam Murphy

Munster made history last weekend when they travelled to South Africa for their first ever match there. They took on the Southern Kings in the PRO14 at Outeniqua Park – a 7,000-seater stadium in a place called George. This match was originally due to take place in Port Elizabeth but the move worked out well for Munster as the lads played this match in CJ Stander’s hometown. Named as captain for this fixture, Stander said he was

Munster Win First Ever Match In South Africa honoured to captain Munster in a stadium where he last played as a 12-year-old kid. It was great to see so many Munster fans in the stadium. The crowd witnessed a pretty good match as the home side went up by two tries in the first half, mainly down to the fact that Munster’s Gerbrant Grobler was sin-binned for a shoulder charge when clearing out a ruck. It was a silly yellow card for the South African and this let the home side into the match.

At one stage Munster were down to 13 men as Dan Goggin clashed heads with Calvin Nash and needed attention, allowing the second try to be scored. With two minutes to go before half time and the score 15-3 to the home side, Niall Scannell was driven over the line to score. Then Calvin Nash crossed for a try leaving the score 1513 at half time. Munster pushed on in the second half with CJ scoring early in the second half before Rory Scan-

nell made the pass of the match to Dan Goggin for a fantastic team try. Scannell passed behind him without looking, knowing his teammate would be there to score the try of the weekend and one of the tries of the season. Rhys Marshall scored and the home side got a dubious try to end the match 22-39 to the men in red. Next weekend Munster take on the Cheetahs at the spectacular Toyota Stadium in Bloemfontein. Here’s hoping for another win down south.

Dr Crokes Club RESULTS: Club Championship - Round 2, Dr Crokes 2-13 Kerins O’Rahillys 1-14. This was a very hard earned victory and it was our point scoring in the second half that got us over the line. We had just four scores in this first thirty minutes to our opponents nine and were behind 0-9 to 2-2. Even though our eleven points from play got us over the line in the end great credit goes to our backs who defended heroically in those closing minutes. UNDER 12 GIRLS: Dr Crokes 3-3 Beaufort 5-10. Our U12 girls played the second round of their County League Preliminaries (to determine Divisions) last Tuesday evening in Beaufort. In a very competitive first half with Jocelyn Hickey, Leah McMahon & Sarah Cooper working extremely hard we went in at the short whistle just 3 points adrift of a good Beaufort side. We finished with a flourish with 2 fantastic scores from Ali O’Donoghue but we had left too much to do. Well done to Beaufort. Fossa overcame Beaufort in a highly entertaining game in Fossa on Monday evening. In the end Fossa’s strength was the key, 3-4 from Emmett O’Shea and a very strong performance from Ruairi Doyle in defense paved the way for this wellearned victory. Fossa play again next Monday vs Listry/Keel with the venue to be confirmed; U-14 County League, Ballymac 5-07 Fossa 4-08. After conceding a bad start on Wednesday evening, Fossa showed great spirit and heart to be only two points in arrears at the break, 2-07 to 2-05. The second half was a much closer affair and despite creating numerous chances our failure to convert them proved costly in the finish. In spite of the best efforts of Darren Ryan, Cian Doyle and Patrick Lyons, Ballymac held on to win by the slimmest of margins.
