EMPTY SHELVES: Shoppers are being advised not to "panic buy" as there's plenty of stock with deliveries operating as normal. Photo: Grigoriy Geniyevskiy

Ministers Shane Ross and Brendan Griffin sought the Government’s agreement for urgent assistance for the tourism, hospitality and leisure sectors – by seeking payment for holidays for businesses. They are also preparing to postpone payments to Revenue, banks and local authorities as a first step in stabilising the businesses until the crisis passes. They have also sought fur-

open and public transport will continue to operate. “While obviously very conscious of the international and nationwide public health concerns resulting from the COVID-19 outbreak, a crisis unprecedented in modern times, Killarney remains very much open for business,” Paul Sherry, President of Killarney Chamber of Tourism and Commerce, told the Killarney Advertiser. Mr Sherry added that his primary concern for everybody in Killarney is the health and safety of customers, both visitors and locals, as well as employees and suppliers, and that will always remain the case. “The Chamber wishes to assure the public that every precaution is being taken in relation to hygiene control in all premises and management and staff are adhering rigidly to HSE advice regarding regular handwashing techniques, premises cleanliness and the provision of hand sanitiser for use by all.”
Killarney hoteliers facing “unprecedented cancellations” | By Sean Moriarty The Kerry branch of the Irish Hotel Federation says it can bounce back from the current crisis despite the industry suffering “unprecedented cancellations”. This weekend traditionally marks the official start of the tourist industry in Kerry but several events including the
Killarney’s St Patrick’s Day Festival and the new Wander Wild Festival have now been cancelled with hoteliers left reeling from the fall out. The fast pace of the spread of the virus and the fact that many countries like Italy have shut down their borders has left the industry in uncharted waters. “This setback has come and will go again. We will be reaching out to Gov-
ernment for help as our staff have to be our priority at this stage as it will have a profound effect on the industry in the short to medium term,” Padraig McGillicuddy, PRO of the Kerry branch of the IHF, told the Killarney Advertiser. “We are seeing unprecedented cancellations and drop in business which is reminiscent of recessionary times in 2008, but this has come at a much faster pace.”
CLOSURES ANAM Arts and Cultural Centre and Killarney Library are just two of several Kerry County Council operated public amenities that will be closed until at least March 30 following Thursday’s Government announcement. The council took advice from the National Public Health Emergency Team before issuing the closure notice.

As spring has finally sprung and Killarney gears up for the tourist season ahead, this new account will be a valuable resource to share with visitors all that is beautiful about Killarney National Park and inspire them to visit during their time here. Followers can expect compelling photos of the sheer beauty on our doorstep, unique aspects of life in the Park, tips on how to explore the thousands of acres, experience the heritage, and educate on the protection and conservation of the treasured natural environment. “We are excited to be one of the first

Rebecca Mulcahy (28) from Woodlawn Park, who has been living in Puglia, south of the country since September, says she can’t leave her home without ID and faces long queues for shops as only one person is allowed in at a time – with everyone advised to stand one metre apart.

In the north of Italy they are much more prepared. The Prime Minister announced that this is an intense quarantine for two weeks and then they’ll review it, but I’d say it’ll be longer somehow.” Rebecca, who is living with her boyfriend’s family, can’t work as a teacher in Italy at present as she’s not fluent in the language but is working within schools doing EU funded projects. However, with the schools closed until April 3, she’s unable to work doing this as they are not set up for online education. “Unfortunately they have chosen not to. I won’t get paid until my projects resume.” She added that there’s hefty fines if people are found out in groups together as they’re told to go out alone. “We can go out for a walk or cycle but alone,” she said. “However, you have to bring your passport or some other form of identification and a form saying why and where you are going. If you go out in groups and don’t obey the rules there’s a hefty fine.” And she added that where she is the weather is brilliant which is making things easier.
| By Sean Moriarty A crime committed in Killarney over four years ago featured in the BBC’s Crimewatch Roadshow Live on Monday. Killarney Gardai would like to speak a Chinese national named Yin Di Pan who is currently believed to be working as a chef in a Chinese restaurant in the Birmingham area. They're looking to speak to him in relation to an incident, where he allegedly poured hot cooking oil over a work colleague's back and neck, in a town centre take-away on Christmas Eve in 2016. It's believed that the 51-year-old may now be working as a chef in a Chinese restaurant or visiting casinos. Originally from China, he now has links to Birmingham and is missing his two front teeth but wears dentures. Garda investigations have led them to the UK and they used the BBC programme to reach out to the British public in an effort to locate the man who is the only suspect in the case. “We are determined to bring this man to justice,” Superintendent Flor Murphy told the Killarney Advertiser. “By appealing to the British public we are showing our resolve and determination in this regard. This was a very serious attack on a work colleague.” Anyone with any information that might be of assistance is asked to contact Killarney Garda Station on 064 6631222.

‘Cycling Without Age’ initiative launched A local cycling club is the first in the country to become involved in a new initiative to help older and immobile residents gain better access to Killarney town. | By Michelle Crean

Main Street repairs would result in weeks of traffic disruption
Killarney Cycling Club has become involved in international movement 'Cycling Without Age' which was founded in Holland in 2012 and has now spread to 47 countries world-wide. Under the scheme, a pilot cycles with two passengers on a three-wheeled, electric-assisted ‘trishaw’. “We always considered ourselves to be a very inclusive club and 'Cycling Without Age' is an extension of this belief," Mark Murphy, Chairman of Killarney Cycling Club, said. "We have a mentoring programme which helps adults get back into cycling and gives them the confidence and skills to
ride with club groups. 'Cycling Without Age' is a natural extension of this ethos.” The collaborative project wouldn’t have been possible without the enthusiastic backing of the Kerry County Council, the HSE and Killarney Chamber of Tourism & Commerce, he added. Máire Flynn who is Director of Nursing at Killarney Community Hospitals, said that she was delighted to have St Columbanus involved in the project and was glad that the HSE was able to contribute to it through its Community and Voluntary Supports programme. “We envisage that it will greatly benefit some of our residents and contribute to the work we do to help keep them active and socially engaged."
Repair works to the paving on Main Street would result in the street being closed to traffic for up to six weeks. | By Sean Moriarty That is according to Killarney Municipal District Engineer John Ahern who was responding to a motion raised by Cllr Brendan Cronin at last week’s Killarney Municipal District meeting. Cronin raised concerns over the condition of the paving on the street. Main Street was refurbished over 10 years ago and the works included the paving of the street, the widening of footpaths and the reduction of car parking spaces from the street’s junction with Plunkett St to Market Cross. Paving slabs on the street have now become dislodged and are causing a vibration noise every time a vehicle passes over them. The loose paving has become
unsightly and some are completely missing and backfilled with asphalt. “Not alone can you see the loose paving, you can hear it too,” Cllr Cronin told the Killarney Advertiser. “It gives a poor impression of the core of our town.” Repair works would involve the grouting of the underneath of all paving. John Ahern explained to the meeting that the grout would need a 28-day traffic-free bonding period for it to cure correctly. “It has deteriorated a lot in the last couple of months,” Mr Ahern told the meeting. “It will take two weeks to do the works but the bricks sit on a layer of sand and there is a grout on that side that would need 28 days without stress to test and cure. You are looking at a minimum of four weeks without traffic.”
MADE FOR TWO: Killarney Cycling Club has launched a new initiative at St Columbanus Community Hospital, Killarney, which helps older and immobile residents of the town to regain the experience of being out on a bike and to gain better access to the delights of Killarney. Photo: Valerie O’Sullivan
Daffodil Day cancelled due to Coronavirus
The Irish Cancer Society has cancelled Daffodil Day collections and events due to Coronavirus.
It has taken the decision to cancel all street collections that were scheduled for Friday, March 27. Daffodil Day is the Irish Cancer Society's biggest fundraiser. “It’s a big, big loss to us,” said Kathrina Breen from the Killarney South Kerry branch of the Irish Can-
cer Society. “We’ll know more next week and hopefully we would be able to put up boxes with daffodils in shops, but we don’t know yet. I encourage everyone to donate online as our collectors are our priority at this time.” Supporters can still make a donation in the absence of any collections on Daffodil Day at cancer.ie.

Tributes to great community man Connie Brosnan Huge crowds turned out in force to bid a fond farewell to popular Killarney man Connie Brosnan who passed away last weekend after a brave battle with illness. | By Eamonn Keogh Connie, from Ross Road, Killarney, was a familiar face in Killarney town through his long association with local sports clubs and charity organisations and his dedicated work in Killarney National Park. A great sense of sadness descended over Killarney with the news of Connie's death on Sunday and the large turnout at his removal on Monday evening and his funeral on Tuesday morning at St Mary's Cathedral was testament to his huge popularity and the respect he earned throughout his life. St Paul's Basketball Club was just one Killarney sporting club privileged to have Connie as an active and committed member for many years. During the mid-1990s Connie was the team manager with the St Paul's senior men’s national league team that played under the Kerry Spring banner. He was ever-present on the sideline and thoroughly enjoyed the successful days out which included a national league division one title and promotion to the SuperLeague in 1995 with coach Joe Coughlan and the great cup run to the televised stages of the national cup during the 1996-97 season under coach Jim Nugent. Connie was also an active committee member during this period and was in-
strumental in spearheading a number of fundraising initiatives for the club. Connie was a keen golfer and his notoriety with the small ball grew even further when he was the first golfer to shoot a hole-in-one on the newly opened Ross Golf Course in 1994. His success and popularity on the golf course paved the way for the annual St Paul's Golf Classic at Ross Golf Course. It was affectionately known as the 'Connie Brosnan' golf classic and proved to be a great fundraiser for the club for several years with Connie as the main driving force. His interest and enthusiasm for the progress of Killarney Basketball never waned and he was delighted to welcome the return of national league basketball to Killarney in 2017. He was a familiar and popular figure with players, visiting teams, coaches, match officials and supporters and his gentleman-like and courteous approach meant that everything always ran smoothly. Connie was a kidney transplant recipient in 2007 and went on to represent Team Ireland in golf in the World Transplant Games. His tireless work and volunteering with the Irish Kidney Association (IKA) has been well documented over the years and he was an outstanding Chairperson of the local Kerry Branch of the IKA until recently.
Garda Síochána Ombudsman Commission in Killarney | By Sean Moriarty The Garda Síochána Ombudsman Commission (GSOC) was in Killarney this week investigating allegations of garda involvement in licencing trade irregularities in the town. The Killarney Advertiser understands that senior officials from GSOC were in Killarney town to interview some of the gardai at the centre of an online blog that was published around Christmas last year.
The blog, written by a former Garda who was previously stationed in Killarney, accused members of the force of taking bribes or turning a blind eye to breaches of the licencing laws in Killarney. The whistle-blower’s claims date from 2012 and have already been the subject of an internal garda inquiry. GSOC refused to comment on the situation and would not confirm nor deny if a member of the ombudsman was in Killarney. “We never comment on where an investigation team might be,” a GSOC spokesperson told the Killarney Advertiser.

At his Funeral Mass chief celebrant Fr Niall Howard spoke of Connie's trojan work with sporting and charitable organisations in Killarney. Connie's son Sean recalled his fond memories in a moving eulogy and described him as "a great father, husband, grandfather and family man". Sean also spoke of his father's passion for golf, his great association with St Paul's Basketball Club and Scotts Lakers, lifelong support for Dr Crokes GAA Club, love of music and dedicated work with the Irish Kidney Association. Guards of honour from St Paul's Basketball Club and The Irish Kidney Association were provided while the Dr Crokes GAA flag was draped on his coffin for his final journey through Killarney town to Aghadoe Cemetery. Killarney hotelier elected vice-chair of IHF | By Sean Moriarty One of Killarney’s best known and respected hoteliers has been named as the vice-chair of the Irish Hotel Federation (IHF). Bernadette Randles, who is the current chair of the Kerry Branch of the IHF, was elected at the IHF’s national conference recently. Her family are steeped in the hospitality industry in Kerry and have operated both the Dromhall and Randles Court hotels on the Muckross Road for years. The family is also involved in the motor industry and operate main dealerships in Killarney and Tralee. “I am thrilled to be representing Kerry at a national level and to be able to voice the opinions of the hospitality sector. We can achieve so much locally but we need to sit at the national level to instigate change. I will continue to do my best for our industry that runs deep in my DNA,” she told the Killarney Advertiser.
ELECTED: Bernadette Randles, the current chair of the Kerry Branch of the IHF, was elected at the IHF’s national conference recently.
Ms Randles has been a long-time advocate of reducing the VAT rate from 13.5% to 9% for the hospitality and service industries. During the recent General Election campaign she called on candidates to relax work permits and to commit to insurance reform. This was all before the current novel Coronavirus (COVID-19) situation. “Let’s be positive,” she added.

Columnist ANNE LUCEY gives her take on happenings in Killarney, Kerry and beyond
We should shut down all public meetings full stop
That Coronavirus thing is bloody nasty and it feels like this is an experimental man-made weapon thought up in some futuristic laboratory in Wuhan, targeting the over 50s particularly. To stop it in its tracks we will need to go back to the old ways we celebrated Lent - with a ban on dances, weddings, gatherings and all types of pleasure, including travel. How ironic is that? This very unusual virus, which can withstand the cold, also goes after people of all ages with underlying conditions like asthma, diabetes and blood pressure and cancer, and even people recovered from cancer. We are not panicking enough is my view. I accept life must go on, but this is not unlike living in medieval plague. I feel I am turning a page of the Decameron, written and set in Northern Italy of all places in the mid-1300s depicting a time of when the city of Florence was plague-stricken. The 1300s was a time when everyone worried about the end of the world, and then the plagues ‘from the East’ started arriving, culminating in the Black Death which swept first through Italy and then across Europe for three years. And we think history does not repeat itself? And while we are all worried about climate change, and melting glaciers, this thing has the potential to devastate us and our economies fairly quickly. I read in the Telegraph that Italy and China have more contact than any other European country because of their shared textile industries, and this is how it got a grip in Italy. It seems to be around much longer than February as well. I would like to see immediate public disinfectant programmes in Kerry. Air terminals, roads, shopping centres, trolleys, cars, buses, trains, garda stations, café tables and shops, taxis and cars and petrol pumps – the thing can
I think we should revive Lent to kill the Coronavirus live for weeks on surfaces – should be sprayed down and deep cleaned. Courts must be closed. People are packed together like sardines in courts and in Council chambers. We should shut down all public meetings, full stop. Two weeks and we will arrest the thing and be out the gap by Easter in time to celebrate this new age Lent. Why have we so forgotten Lent? During Lent all dance halls were closed, cinemas did less business than usual, and you couldn’t get married. I think we should revive Lent to kill the Coronavirus.
THE CORONA ECONOMY
There is an economic factor of course to Corona. In the UK they are bringing in a package of emergency measures to support businesses hit by Coronavirus. We have had some announcements here too. Incredibly there are to be supports for small businesses and the self-employed. We’ll wait and see is my view, but the caretaker Government seems to be taking the sensible view that it is better to pay people rather than having them feeling they have to go to work until they drop, spreading infection. Now in the same week that many in this town got the first part of their annual rates bill – the average is €7,550 for guesthouses coming back into life after being closed for the winter – is it not
The language of Corona Meanwhile Corona beer has taken a hit because of the name Corona, I have read. It is high time the second part of the word - “virus”took a similar hit. The cavalier use of “viral” about stories popular on the Internet and Facebook as in
“gone viral” must surely now be revised. Mind you, I have always smelt something nasty in the phrase, something uncaring as if once a story got that much shares it took on legs of its own
time the County Council cut Killarney some slack and agreed to write off this demand, or at least to delay it without penalty? Businesses in Killarney cannot expect to be milked constantly for facilities for the largely empty “county town” now can they? I listened last week to Michael Scannell, the former Town Clerk and now Tralee Town Manager. Michael’s devotion to his native Tralee is well recognised and he is much loved there. He has driven projects and secured millions for the town. He was responding on Radio Kerry to much criticism by Tralee business people. Six million euro alone is being put into the town centre and there is a further three million euro for the Island of Geese, Michael said, as well as leafy walkways and free parking is on the cards to encourage footfall to the island. Now Michael is right when he suggests the idea town centres must be re-invented. And he has suggested chess and other gatherings for what he envisages will be a leafy Tralee. It would be great for the pawns in the game – Killarney – if they got a nod from county hall re: rates and other matters now. We must also bear in mind that the average household in Killarney pays more in local property tax than any other district in Kerry for the simple reason properties are higher valued in Killarney than Listowel or Kenmare or elsewhere - despite the fact that average wages are probably lower in Killarney than elsewhere. One thing needs to be said; while we all expect it to hit Killarney hard, because of the numbers in and out, Killarney is spotlessly clean. Bedrooms and dining areas in hotels are cleaned down several times a day and there can be little room for it to hide in Killarney. and there wasn’t the same amount of respect to be accorded. We’ll all probably be more careful too about “isolation” in the light of the “self-isolation” being imposed on people. It is a ridiculous phrase in any case. Isolation alone is quite adequate. And what are we to make of lock-down? We are familiar with “lock-in” and “lock-up” but lock-down? It is a North American
Design for public meeting room is without thought The idea put forward here in this column last week of moving the handful of public meetings held in the Killarney Town Hall to nearby Killarney House has a bit of steam in it. The Mayor of Kerry, currently in the US, Cllr Niall Kelleher, tells me he was glad to see the suggestion and he is to pursue the idea. He agrees the meeting room that is supposed to accommodate the public is wholly inadequate. What is most disconcerting is how tens of thousands of euro of public money has so recently been put into the refurbishment of Killarney Town Hall - I have asked for the exact figure and await same. For almost two years the meetings were held next door in the bank or in the library, and yet design for the public meeting room is so without thought for the public nature of the events. The Department of Culture, Heritage and the Gaeltacht tell me there are “no public meeting rooms of this nature at Killarney House, when I suggested Council meetings might move there from the nearby stuffed Town Hall. I disagree with the Department. I have been upstairs in Killarney House and there are fine big rooms with lovely views that could be used. In addition, going to a Council meeting in Killarney House would surely attract the public in some numbers and give a bit of gizz to the whole idea of public participation in how this town is managed and envisaged. Let’s see what the Mayor of Kerry, and former Mayor of Killarney, manages to achieve!
word from the prison system there when people were “on lock down” and then was extended to when there are the shootings in schools and universities and such over there. In any case, lock-downs of towns and countries no longer work. You can’t lock down a complete country or a complete town if only because there are no walls any longer to keep us all inside.

Young Social Innovators ready to speak out
Two student groups from one local school are taking issues to a whole new level by creating campaigns with local gardai. And the next move by the youngsters from Killarney Community College’, who are part of the Young Social Innovators (YSI) highlighting social issues, is to take part in a Speak Out in Cork City Hall, on Thursday, March 26. The two Transition Year groups partnered with An Garda Síochána throughout the year to collect their knowledge to ensure the best way to raise awareness about their two social concerns, explained teacher Lorraine Crowley. “The first group created was ‘Cyclists Matter’,” she said. “Their goal is to raise awareness on cycling safety and make sure everyone is safe to cycle on our roads. They are plan-

Killarney mother at centre of US murder suicide tragedy | By Sean Moriarty A memorial Mass took place in Killarney on Wednesday for the Huber-Kelly family who died in Reno, Nevada last week. 53-year-old Joan Huber (nee Kelly), her husband Adam (50), and their two sons Adam (17), and Michael (16) were found dead at their home. Mrs Huber was originally from the Coolcaslagh area of Killarney but had been living in the United States for the last 30 years. Police in Nevada confirmed that the four deaths were a murder-suicide and that Mrs Huber was the only suspect in the case. Reno Police believe that Mrs Huber shot her husband and two sons before taking her own life. “This appears to be an isolated incident and there is no threat to the community,” said Reno Police Department’s Media Relations Officer Travis Warren. The late Joan had attended Lissivigeen National School and Loreto Secondary School in Killarney.
Her family are well known in the area, her late father John was a former East Kerry GAA Board president, a member of Spa GAA, and the Commercials Rowing Club in Killarney. He contested one General Election for the Progressive Democrats in the 1980s. He was physiotherapist and worked with the Kerry County Football team under Páidí Ó Sé from 1997 to 2004. He was also a Psychiatric Nurse and helped maintain the football team at St Finan’s Hospital during his time there. Mrs Huber is survived by her mother Sheila (nee Doolan) and her four siblings. Cllr Michael Gleeson, Mayor of Killarney, is a neighbour of the family and a member of Spa GAA. “Our community is grieving,” he told the Killarney Advertiser. “On behalf of the community, Spa GAA and the entire Killarney parish, I pass on my sincere sympathies to Sheila and the Kelly and Doolan families on the tragic events in Reno. The families represent all that is good in our community and they are held in huge esteem.”
The proceeds from the 9th annual Denis Michael Dennehy Memorial Pool Tournament, played over a period of two months on run up to Christmas last year, has raised a total of €1,800 for charity. A cheque was presented by Shane Dennehy to Con O’Connor, Pieta House Kerry last week. This hugely popular annual tournament, in memory of Denis Michael from Artigallivan, attracted a huge entry of one hundred people from both Kerry and Cork and even further afield. “For the first time ever, we even had the ‘Leinster Championship!’ relatives of Dens that were unable to make the games in Barradubh,” Shane Dennehy, organiser of the tournament, said. “People just want to support the tournament in any way they can, and always travel many miles to Barradubh to do so. The tournament is always played in great spirits, and the craic and banter is the most important thing to everyone, exactly what Denis would want.” The Corner Bar, Barradubh was full to the rafters to watch the final live on the big screen on the December 22. On a night of super entertainment and craic, with music and song provided by 10 CDs, 2017 winner Joe Guerin reclaimed
the trophy beating local man Mike Ó Keefe in the final. “The party continued well into the early hours after that, with plenty singsong and dance.” He added that the Dennehy family would like to take this opportunity to thank all those that generously sponsored raffle prizes for the night, 10 CDs for rocking the Corner Bar to its very foundations once again, and host Siobhan Coakley for putting on such a fantastic spread on the night of the final. “And finally, of course, our many thanks to everyone that played in the tournament in November and December, or made donations, or bought raffle tickets on the night. The massive proceeds of €1,800 would not have been possible without the generosity of every single person that supported the tournament in some way, shape or form, so the Dennehy family would like to thank everyone from the bottom of our hearts once again, and we look forward to seeing ye all back in the Corner Bar next Christmas again.”

Councillor Cahill said residents in Beaufort have been highlighting this hazardous junction for many years and are most anxious that safety improvement works are carried out at the earliest possible date. "It is imperative that this dangerous junction is improved before any further accidents occur at this location," he said. "This is a busy junction in Beaufort and locals are extremely concerned that someone will be seriously injured or killed at this location if action is not taken." Senior Roads Engineer, Padraic Teahan said that minor works at this location would be suitable for funding through
the Councillor Specific Municipal District Operations fund. "Any works proposed would require the permission of the landowner. An estimate can be prepared upon request." Mr Teahan said alternatively the location may be considered for submission to the Department of Transport Tourism and Sport under the Safety Improvement Works Scheme. However, the Road Safety Authority website indicates that there have been no recorded accidents at this junction since 2005 which does not support the case for a more significant project at this junction. Councillor Cahill said he was aware of a couple of accidents that occurred at this location and had passed on a number of photographs in respect of same. The Rossbeigh Councillor requested that an estimate be prepared for the required works.

The scene was attended by local Garda and Roads Policing Units along with fire and emergency services personnel. A female passenger (40s) in one of the cars seriously injured in the collision was pronounced dead at the scene a short time later. She was named locally as Sharon Healy from Kiskeam in north Cork. Two other occupants of the same car, a man and woman, understood to be the dead woman’s parents, are both in their 70s, were taken from the scene by ambulance to University Hospital Kerry.
The woman is understood to be in a critical condition while the man's injuries are not thought to be life threatening. The occupants of the second car, two females aged in their early 20s, were removed by Air Ambulance to Cork University Hospital and University Hospital Limerick. Their injuries are not thought to be life threatening. The road at the crash site was sealed off for examination by Garda forensic collision investigators and traffic diversions were in place until late on Sunday evening. “Two cars travelling in the opposite direction were involved in a head on collision,” Superintendent Flor Murphy, who attended the scene, told the Killarney Advertiser. “It was a very serious incident in terms of resources and response.” Investigating Gardaí are appealing for witnesses to contact Killarney Garda Station 064 6671160.
Derrycunnihy works to be completed by the end of month Works on the landmark Derrycunnihy Church on the Moll’s Gap Road, will be completed by the end of March. Cork and Kerry rivalry set aside for Sam’s big day Caragh and Conor Farrell from Ballycasheen celebrated the christening of their first son on Saturday.

Baby Sam, barely 16-weeks-old, was born on November 13. After the ceremony at St Mary’s Cathedral on Saturday afternoon the extended Farrell and Cronin families celebrated at the International Hotel and later at The Shire. Aisling Cronin, Caragh’s sister is godmother and Brendan Farrell, Conor’s brother, is godfather. Proud grandparents were Eileen and
Sean Cronin from Tiernaboul and Mary and Tom Farrell from Ballincollig in Cork. “I will be bringing Sam up as a proud Kerry supporter,” Caragh said despite her husband’s loyalty to the Rebel County. Kerry has won the Sam Maguire Cup on 37 occasions compared to Cork’s six - but the most coveted cup in Gaelic football is named for a Cork man who shares his named with the newest member of the Cronin-Farrell family.
Reunion celebrates 50 years of friendship
It was a time of reminiscing and making new memories on Saturday as former pupils of St Brigid's class of 1965-70 held their 50th reunion in The International Hotel. Over 20 past pupils were able to make the celebration, a good figure considering the way schools were run then. Free secondary school education was introduced into Ireland in 1967 but many of these girls would have started secondary two years earlier. There were 45 girls on the roll book when they all entered First Year in 1965, but many of them left school after the Junior Cert, and fewer still completed the Leaving Cert in 1970. This was their third gathering, they got together for their 25th and 40th, the only change in the intervening years is instead of organising a night time dinner they met during the day for afternoon lunch. One surprise visitor was teacher Bríd
Murray O’Donoghue. “She was very young when she started teaching, back then you only needed three years training and she could have been only 21 when she started teaching us, she was not much older than the rest of us,” Catherine Murphy Casey, one of the organisers, said. “She left the school and had a family of her own and returned to teaching at St Brendan’s where she taught many of our sons.” Most of the ladies travelled from nearby, but special mention has to be given to Kathleen Foley who travelled from the UK Midlands for the occasion.

Sea stories intrigue school students Transition Year students from St Brigid’s Secondary School were treated to a talk with a difference last week – about life at sea. The girls were fortunate enough to have a very informative talk delivered by Honor Murphy, Petty Officer in the Irish Naval Service. Honor spoke of the role of the naval service within the Irish Defence Forces such as maritime defence, fishery protection, contraband interdiction duties and search and rescue. She also spoke of the recruitment process and the qualifications and training required to apply, explained Transition Year student Sao-
irse Coffey. “It was intriguing to hear of Honor’s varied life on board the ship, working in the communications branch. It is evident that determination and good team work skills are essential.” She added that Honor shared some entertaining stories from her time as Petty Officer. “She recently returned a yacht to its owner after he had suffered from a heart attack four months prior and had to be airlifted to the hospital. The boat was discovered with a sticky note explaining how to turn on the engine! “While I'm not sure we all found our sea legs it was certainly interesting to hear about life in the Irish Naval Service.”

GAA club apologises for viral training video Kilcummin GAA have apologised “for any offence caused” after a video taken at a recent club training session was shared widely on social media. The 31-second clip, which shows members of the club’s senior football team engaging in a wrestling-style exercise - as a man, apparently a coach, shouts obscenities at them - has attracted national attention online after first circulating on the popular messaging service WhatsApp. The video was recorded on the training
field at Fitzgerald Stadium in Killarney. It has been seen over 54,000 times on the Killarney Advertiser’s website. The 2019 All-Ireland Intermediate champions released a statement apologising for the incident on its website: 'It has come to the attention of the club executive that a video circulating on social media relating to the club has caused great offence. The executive do not condone the language and content in the video. We are currently looking into the incident and wish to apologise for any offence caused'.

In a remote and superstitious village in County Cork, Garda Siobhán O’Sullivan must solve a murder where the prime suspects are fairies. To Siobhán, family is everything, and now she has a new fiancé, Macdara Flannery. When his cousin Susan frantically calls for his help, Siobhán is at his side as the two gardai rush from Kilbane to the rural village where Susan and her mother have recently moved. Unfortunately, tragedy awaits them. They find Susan, who is blind, outside the cottage in a state. Inside, aunt Ellen lies on her bed in a fancy red dress, no longer breathing. A pillow on the floor and a nearby teacup suggest the mode of death to their trained eyes: the woman has been poisoned and smothered. Devout believers in Irish folklore, the villagers insist the cottage is cursed built on a fairy path. It turns out Ellen Delaney was not the first to die mysteriously in this cottage. Although the townsfolk blame malevolent fairies, Siobhán and
Macdara must follow the path of a murderer all too human—but just as evil. Now’s the time to start planning for autumn colour Planning for autumn colour can seem like a strange task to undertake now, especially as it seems spring has not even arrived yet. However, as gardeners we are always thinking ahead! This is the time for planting Dahlias, Gladioli, Begonias and other late summer flowering plants. Begonias really need to be planted now in order to get a good display for the summer. Plant them just below the surface with the slightly depressed side facing upwards. Keep the pot moist and preferably indoors to give them a strong start. As the buds begin to grow you can add some compost to the pot so that eventually the bulb is about two inches deep. Plant out when all danger of frost is gone, usually mid-May. Dahlias are tubers which should also be planted now. There is a very varied selection available, especially online; www.farmergracy.co.uk is a great website! The choice is much more varied if you buy tubers than if you wait for them to be available in pots. Dahlias should be planted with the visible buds just below the surface of the pot. I recommend growing them in pots firstly because you can protect them from adverse weather, and secondly so that you can control

slugs. It is possible to split Dahlias now also, this is made a lot easier when there is a bit of growth, so that you can see which are the stronger tubers. It is simple to break the strong tubers off and pot them up as you would normally. When the plant is about 12 inches tall, cut off the top four inches to encourage bushier growth, and if you are planning to use the flowers as show or cut flowers, keep just one bud out of every four. Earwigs can be a problem - they like the taste of the flowers! There is a simple solution; fill a small terracotta pot with straw. Place a bamboo cane next to the Dahlia and put the straw-filled pot upside down on the cane. Earwigs will crawl up into it during the day to stay cool, so you can empty the pot each afternoon!
Thousands of Snowdrops and Daffodils planted in Killarney A large group gathered together on Saturday morning to help bring a bit more brightness to Killarney town by planting a whopping 7,500 Snowdrops and Daffodils. Members of The Killarney Looking Good Committee came together in the green on Mission Road, following on from last year’s very successful Bluebell planting. "We had a wonderful turnout of volunteers on Saturday, who planted 7,500 snowdrop bulbs,” Eileen O'Donoghue, Killarney Municipal District said.
“It is the committee’s intention that the planting will improve biodiversity and enhance our environment. We have an amazing National Park on our doorstep and this is another great opportunity for people to come together and enhance the link between the town and the park." The snowdrops were planted in memory of a very special friend to Killarney - Archdeacon Fr Michael Murphy. The event was supported by South Kerry Development Partnership, Kerry County Council and Killarney Chamber of Tourism and Commerce.

Trump suspends Trump CORNER
European-US travel
In an effort to stop the spread of the Coronavirus (COVID-19), US President Donald Trump has proposed new travel restrictions for Europe. Within the first few sentences of his prepared remarks, Trump referred to the Coronavirus, which is believed to have originated in China, as a "foreign virus". Trump announced that the United States will bar visitors from several European countries to the United States for the next 30 days with ex-
emptions for Americans, permanent residents and the families of US citizens who have undergone checks. The Schengen area, as defined in the proclamation, includes 26 European states, but does not include the UK or Ireland, which will not be subject to the ban. Trump's statement and position on Europe went just like this: "Taking early intense action we've seen dramatically fewer cases of the virus in the United States than are

Coronavirus hits Hollywood Hanks Actor Tom Hanks says he and his wife, actress Rita Wilson, have been diagnosed with Coronavirus. In a statement posted to Instagram, Hanks said he and his wife were travelling in Australia when they were tested after exhibiting symptoms like tiredness, body aches, chills and "slight fevers". "Well, now. What to do next? The Medical Officials have protocols that must be followed. We Hanks' will be tested, observed, and isolated for as long as public health and safety requires. Not much more to it than a one-day-at-a-time ap-
proach, no?" he wrote. Warner Bros. confirmed the actor was in Australia doing pre-production work on a film about singer Elvis Presley. "We are working closely with the appropriate Australian health agencies to identify and contact anyone who may have come in direct contact with the individual," Warner Bros. said in a statement. "The health and safety of our company members is always our top priority, and we are taking precautions to protect everyone who works on our productions around the world."
Review Board established to re-examine Rescue 116 accident A Review Board to re-examine certain findings of the investigation into the accident involving Rescue 116 has been established. The Minister for Transport, Tourism and Sport, Mr Shane Ross announced a new Review Board to re-examine the Draft Final Report of the investigation into the accident involving Rescue 116 at Black Rock, Co Mayo on March 14, 2017. The establishment of the Review Board is in line with the regulations governing the investigation of air accidents, specifically ‘Statutory Instrument (SI) No 460 of 2009: Air Navigation (Notification and Investigation of Accidents, Serious Incidents and Incidents) Regulations 2009’. On foot of the accident involving R116, the Air Accident Investigation Unit (AAIU) commenced an investigation, as required under international and domestic law. An Interim Report was published by the AAIU on March 16, 2018 and a subsequent Interim Statement on March 1, 2019.
On September 13, 2019, the AAIU issued its Draft Final Report to interested parties. As part of the process, the interested parties were given 60 days to review the Draft Final Report and offer comments. SI No. 460 of 2009 provides for an interested party to serve on the Minister written “notice of re-examination” in respect of findings and conclusions that appear to reflect adversely on the person’s reputation. Such a notice was served on the Minister by an interested party. Having reviewed the notice, it was decided that the “notice of re-examination” met the criteria set out in Regulation 15 of the Air Navigation Regulations 2009 (S.I. No.460 of 2009) for establishment of a Review Board. The Minister has now established a Review Board in line with the 2009 Regulations. The Review Board will be chaired by Senior Counsel Patrick McCann who will be assisted by an independent expert member. The Review Board will be entirely independent in its work in accordance with the relevant legislation.
The Kerry based Senator, who has travelled over 5,000km to date, said he will no longer call to county councillors homes or meet them at gatherings in an effort to stem the spread of COVID-19. "I’ve always enjoyed travelling around
the country and meeting with councillors," He explained. "I find it the best way to keep your ear to the ground and in touch with the issues facing people. However, health comes first, councillors and their families are as vulnerable as anyone else, and I’ve taken the decision to come off the road with immediate effect. I will complete my Seanad campaign by phone, I think this is the right thing to do."
Komodo dragon with no partner gives birth Charlie, a female Komodo dragon at Tennessee's Chattanooga Zoo, has proved to be the ultimate independent lady after having successfully given birth without a male partner. While Charlie and a possible mate named Kadal were put together in breeding hopes, the first-time mother created the three hatchlings, named Onyx, Jasper and Flint, through a process called parthenogenesis (when another egg, fertilises an egg), on her own. This is particularly rare among vertebrates accord-
ing to Scientific American. Just 70 backboned animals can achieve this, which is around 0.1 percent of all vertebrates. The hatchlings were born last August, but since zoo staff were never able to confirm any successful breeding between Charlie and Kadal, they ordered a DNA test and announced the news on their Facebook page. Komodo dragons have evolved to reproduce both sexually and parthenogenetically because they mainly live isolated in the wild and become violent when approached, according to the zoo.
Coronavirus conference cancelled due to Coronavirus The Council on Foreign Relations has cancelled a roundtable conference entitled 'Doing Business Under Coronavirus' due to the spread of the infection itself, scheduled for today (Friday) in New York. CFR has also cancelled other in-person conferences planned from March 11 to April 3, including roundtables in New York and Washington, as well as regional gatherings across the United States.
"Due to the evolving COVID-19 situation, the Council on Foreign Relations, like many other organisations, has suspended all in-person events effectively. Our foremost concern is for the health and safety of Council members, staff and the community," CFR said. The conference joins an increasing number of other activities, including music festivals, that had to be cancelled or postponed due to the spread of the virus.

Indian head massage is a very healing massage for the head, face, neck, shoulders, arms and upper back, that relieves tension in the muscles. Stress is responsible for many illness therefore alleviating stress may prevent other problems in the future. An Indian head massage can release tension, improve sleep, promote deep relaxation, reduce anxiety, improve mood, enhance well-being, relieve headaches caused by stress, alleviate emotional stress,
encourage healing and improve circulation. If you suffer with sinuses, headaches, blocked ears; they can all be helped with an Indian head massage, and for extra benefit you can add on ear candling to the massage treatment. After the head massage has relaxed the muscles, the therapist will ask you to turn on your side and a candle is gently placed in your ear canal and lit. The flame slowly burns down and the warm and cool air creates a vacuum effect drawing out wax. The chimney effect that is created is what causes the sucking action and helps to remove the excess wax and regulate ear pressure. Then it’s time for the second ear. It’s important to drink plenty of water after any massage to increase the benefits. Ear candling is suitable for adults of all ages, it can also induce benefits such a detoxification through the stimulation of the lymphatic system, better healing through the stimulation of the nerve endings, enhances hearing, vision and taste, creates a more balanced emotional state, better relaxation and releases tension and stress by stimulating the immune system.
Since its launch Killarney Credit Union has seen a strong demand for their current account services – which includes globally accepted Mastercard Debit Card with Contactless Payments, Standing Orders, Direct Debits, and the option of an Overdraft facility.
New members are always welcome in Killarney Credit Union and the Current Account is also available to new members. This is good news for credit union members and for consumers in general who have limited choice at present. Credit unions are seen to offer something different to the major banks in terms of their personal touch and are considered trustworthy. “We are keen to grow our current account service for our members,” Helen Courtney Power, Business Development Officer, Killarney Credit Union said. “To date, our members have been very satisfied with the service offered through the current account. Members have full control over their accounts via the online banking Apps.” Members of both credit unions can open an account online or in any of their
branches in North and South Kerry. All members need is to bring in two forms of ID which includes a photo and address to open. Mark Murphy, CEO of Killarney Credit Union added that credit unions have been voted the 'most trusted financial institutions for many years'. “Just recently they became the first in the world to receive the coveted the national ‘CX Award for Best Customer Experience in Ireland’ for a record-breaking five years in a row,” he said. “With an exceptional service combined with a modern suite of financial services, we hope that members will consider us for all their financial needs.” The new current account has simple and transparent pricing. A low monthly fee of €4 applies and that covers unlimited euro point of sale and contactless transactions, unlimited mobile and online banking and unlimited standing orders and direct debit processing and up to five euro ATM withdrawals per month. Full details of fees and charges are available on www.killarneycu.ie. Information on the new current account is available from Killarney Credit Union in Killarney, Kenmare and Cahersiveen.

Are weekends your weakness?
ENDURANCE: Kenmare welcomes over 1600 adventure racers for third annual Quest Kenmare last Saturday. Participants undertook one of three routes, the 28km ‘Challenge’ route, the 43km ‘Sport’ route and the 79km ‘Expert’ route. Pictured are: Maureen Fennell, Kelly Fennell, James Murphy, Michael Downing, JP Byrne and Bernie Byrne. Photo: Marek Hajdasz
Quest Kenmare welcomes over 1600 adventure racers Molls Gap, Bonane Heritage Park, Esk Mountain and Kenmare town were just some of the hotspots that saw 1600 adventure racers traverse when Quest Kenmare returned for the third year. Starting and finishing the event in Kenmare town, participants came out in abundance on Saturday last to take on the run, cycle and kayak sections of the course. Participants undertook one of three routes, the 28km ‘Challenge’ route, the 43km ‘Sport’ route and the 79km ‘Expert’ route. Winners of the Expert route were Sebastian Giraud and local Kenmare woman, Ellen Vitting. Winners of the Sport route were Bernard Smyth and Niamh Cleary. Winners of the Challenge route were Sheldon Kirkwood and Geraldine Breen.
"We are thrilled that Quest Kenmare is still as popular as ever with participants coming from all over Ireland for the event," Race Organiser, Oliver Kirwan, said. "Kenmare itself is a great attraction and people just love spending the weekend exploring what the region has to offer. I’d like to thank KMEG and all the volunteers who made the event possible. We get huge support from local residents every year and it goes a long way towards making the event the success that it is. We look forward to working with everyone again in 2021."
Do you ever feel like you absolutely crush your fitness and nutrition during the week, only to be struggling on the weekend? You’re not alone! This is probably one of the biggest issues our members bring to us and we want to help you out! Why is being super strict with yourself and then “cheating” all weekend an issue? If your goal is weight loss or fat loss, you need to be consistent in your fitness and nutrition. If you eat for those goals and are in a caloric deficit (taking in less calories than you’re burning), but then you’re eating way more calories than you’re burning on the weekend, you might be ending up actually taking in more calories than you’re burning, or just breaking even, when it’s averaged over the whole week. That’s going to result in not seeing your fat-loss goals, or could even result in gaining fat overall. Bigger repeated fluctuations, like following a strict diet for a few weeks or months, and then returning to old eating habits for a while, can even result in returning to a heavier weight each time you “slip” or “cheat”, and a bigger risk of some chronic diseases. The solution? We’ve got to be consistent in what we’re doing for nutrition and fitness, both over the course of the week, and in general for the rest of your life. When I’m working with nutrition clients to make changes, I always ask them if they can see them-
selves making the change we’re talking about for the next 18 months, including on weekends. I want them to be able to make the change forever, but forever is hard to wrap our heads around. If you are struggling with your weekends, it’s worth having a look at what you’re doing during the week. If you need to overeat on treat foods, is it possible you’re being too strict or not eating enough overall during the week? It sounds counter-intuitive, but if you’re not taking in enough fuel or just feel deprived, your body can make you overcompensate as a way to protect you. Maybe we need to have a peek at your diet during the week, just to make sure you’re getting what you need. If that’s not the case, keeping things interesting on the weekend might be the change you need to stay motivated. Get yourself moving if you can; one healthy habit encourages all the others! Get to the Saturday workout, or get out for a run, walk or bike ride; whatever sounds fun to you! Focus on the easy things and what you can add to your diet instead of trying to avoid specific foods. Make sure you’re getting enough water in and lots of fruits and veggies. Still want some pizza or beer? No problem! Just work on the things you can add instead of the things we’re trying to avoid. At the end of the day, remember that the name of the game here is consistency, not perfection, both throughout the week and in life in general. Don’t overthink it, and keep it simple!

Mazda in line for two 'World Car of the Year' awards For the first time ever two of the three finalists for 2020 'World Car of the Year' are from the same brand. The Mazda CX-30 and Mazda3 will vie this year for the distinguished title alongside the Kia Telluride. The unconventional Japanese car maker has become a fixture at WCOTY, an annual contest initially held in 2005. After the Mazda2 won in 2008, the current-generation MX-5 became the first model ever to win the main prize and a second category in 2016, also capturing the 'World Car Design of the Year' award. The Mazda3, with its acclaimed Kodo exterior, is also among the top three contenders for the 2020 'World Car Design of the Year' award. It thus has the
chance to replicate the double triumph achieved by the Mazda MX-5 in 2016. Both models also feature newly designed human-centric cabins and enhanced sound insulation. Amongst other things, Mazda used a “two-wall” structure with space between the floor carpeting and body panel to produce a higher quality of cabin peace. Buyers have a choice between the newly developed eight-speaker Mazda Harmonic Acoustics and 12-speaker Bose premium audio system. Mazda is represented in Kerry by Aherns of Castleisland, but the Kia finalist, the Telluride, is only available in America and will not be launched in Europe, so whatever happens at the awards ceremony the local dealer will be a winner.

Motorcycle racer gets advice from world’s best A young Killarney motorcycle racer has been getting tips from some of the best riders in the world ahead of the start of the 2020 Irish season. Kevin Coyne is preparing for the Dunlop Masters Superbike Championship which gets underway in Mondello Park in County Kildare in two weeks’ time. Last week the 17-year-old took part in a three-day test at El Circuito de Velocidad de Cartagena in Spain. It was his first time riding the new Kawasaki he will use in Ireland and selected rounds of the British Superbike Championship this year. Professional motorcycle racers like Ryan Farquhar and Michael Dunlop were there too as part of a bigger test and when they spotted the young Killarney rider were able of offer help and advice. Kevin’s aim was to complete a lap of the famous Spanish track in under two minutes. On the opening day of the test he set a best time of 2 mins 07 seconds in windy conditions. In the early part of day-two he was still unable to break the two-minute barri-
er, despite an improvement in weather conditions until Farquhar, a multiple Irish Road Racing champion and former factory BMW and Kawasaki rider offered to help - and the times came tumbling down. “With the help of Ryan Farquhar and his knowledge of Kawasaki he set the bike for Kevin and by the end of the day he was going around in 1.58min consistently,” his father Mark told the Killarney Advertiser. “Kevin started to feel really confident and felt he could get down to 1 min 56 seconds.” On the third day Kevin was lapping consistently in 1 min 55 seconds, but the best was yet to come. With just half a day left, road racing royalty Michael Dunlop spotted the Killarney youngster and came over for a chat. The advice worked as Kevin managed a week-long best of 1 min 54 seconds after speaking to the Isle of Man TT legend who was in Spain for his first run on the PBM Ducati he will race this year. Coyne’s season gets underway this weekend with the official Irish test in Mondello Park ahead of the season-opener at the same venue at the end of March.

Students are beefing it up for national competition | By Grigoriy Geniyevskiy Local students have been chosen as one of 30 schools out of 700 to go onto the finals for the Certified Irish Angus Beef Schools Competition. The youngsters from St Brendan's College Killarney were among 34 groups who were pitching to become one of the finalists for the Certified Irish Angus Beef Schools Competition in Croke Park this week. The idea which had earned the Transition Year students a place in the finals consisted of QR codes on meat packaging which provides the consumer with a background and history check of the meat. Now they’re waiting for the results of the competition which was organised by Certified Irish Angus Beef, ABP and
Kepak. And if they win, the students will be challenged to rear five Angus calves for 18 months as part of their Leaving Certificate Agricultural Science project. The aim of the competition is to encourage second level students to gain an understanding about the care and attention that is required to produce and promote the highest quality beef for farmers. “Some schools keep the calves as they have the facilities, but if we were to get them, Irish Angus Beef would help us find a suitable farmer and facility for these calves,” Coramarie Kelliher, one of the teachers of St Brendan’s College, told the Killarney Advertiser. “The QR codes make it more traceable and more sustainable as well as it helps to promote Irish Angus beef compared to beef we import from other countries.”

Singers & musicians were on display at the north campus of IT Tralee on Saturday and the dancers were in full force at the Fossa Community Centre on Sunday.Kilcummin comhaltas branch had strong showing on both days with the diverse talent within the branch on show for all to see. Kilcummin’s competitors were on the podium for numerous 3rd, 2nd and 1st place finishes on both days. In loving memory of Sheila O’Keeffe, Lissivigeen, Killarney, Who died on 16th March 2013. Death is nothing at all. I have only slipped away to the next room. I am I and you are you. Whatever we were to each other, That, we still are. Call me by my old familiar name. Speak to me in the easy way which you always used. Put no difference into your tone. Wear no forced air of solemnity or sorrow. Laugh as we always laughed at the little jokes we enjoyed together. Play, smile, think of me. Pray for me. Let my name be ever the household word that it always was. Let it be spoken without effect. Without the trace of a shadow on it. Life means all that it ever meant. It is the same that it ever was. Opening day wins for Legion. Spa, Kilcummin, Gneeveguilla and Glenflesk East Kerry champions Killarney Legion got their 2020 Kerry SFL Division 1 campaign off to a perfect start on Sunday as goals by tricky corner forward Conor Keane and marauding full back Cian Gammell helped them to a solid win over An Ghaeltacht in Gallarus. Points by David O'Sullivan, Tom Moriarty and Kieran Slattery fired Legion into an early lead and when Keane hit the back of the net soon after, the visitors were well in the ascendancy. Kerry senior Jonathan Lyne made it 1-4 to no score but a goal by Éanna O'Connor and a point by Tomás Ó Sé cut the deficit to three. Stephen Stack's men tacked on two more singles to leave the half-time score at Legion 1-6 An Ghaeltacht 1-2. The home team made it a three-point game again early in the second but a point by Keane and a goal by former Kerry U20 Cian Gammell increased the lead to seven. Last year's beaten Intermediate finalists managed to peg back two more points but Legion held on for fine five-point win (An Ghaeltacht 1-5
Killarney Legion 2-7). Spa also picked up an impressive road victory in Round 1 as they saw off a late fight-back by John Mitchels to prevail with two points to spare. The Killarney club trailed in the opening stages in Boherbue before a goal in the 19th minute by veteran forward Mike Stam O'Donoghue made it 1-2 to 0-3. Spa still led by two heading into the break but Mitchels started the second half well as Niall Sheehy sent over three straight points to edge ahead by one. Then Mitchels picked up a black card and Spa made hay. They rattled off 1-5 without reply (1-2 via the boot of Evan Cronin) to take complete control of the game, and not even the concession of two injury time goals could deny them the victory (John Mitchels 2-10 Spa 2-12). Also in Division 1, Kilcummin upset the odds by defeating Kerins O'Rahilly's in Strand Road, Fergal Hallissey kicked a last ditch 45 as Beaufort defeated Rathmore and an understrength Dr Crokes team fell to a tough defeat away to Dingle.
Defending champions Austin Stacks made a positive start to 2020 as they got the better of Kenmare Shamrocks, Michael O'Donnell top-scoring with 1-4 in a 2-5 to 0-7 win.
DIVISION 2
Newly-promoted Gneeveguilla started their Division 2 campaign off in style as goals from John O'Leary and Con Buckley helped them to a resounding 2-16 to 2-7 victory over Desmonds in Castleisland. Listry, meanwhile, fell to a disappointing 0-10 to 3-13 defeat to Templenoe in what was Marc Ó Sé's first league game in charge. Templenoe were boosted by the availability of Kerry stars Adrian and Killian Spillane, both of whom were introduced off the bench. The Crokes Bs had a tricky away game against St Mary's in Round 1 and they found the going difficult down in Cahersiveen. Goals by Jack, Dan and Denis Daly (the latter two coming just 40 seconds apart) and a fourth by substitute Niall O'Shea propelled the home team to a comprehensive 4-11 to 1-3 win.
DIVISIONS 3-6
In Division 3, Glenflesk got their promotion bid up and running with a dogged 0-9 to 0-7 victory over Ardfert in Ardfert. Remarkably, all but one of the 16 scores came at one end of the pitch, such was the strength of the wind on the day. Elsewhere, Mid Kerry rivals Keel and Laune Rangers played out a tense seven-all draw. Castlegregory were the big winners in Division 4 as they hammered Lispole with 15 points to spare, while there were defeats for Fossa (versus Beale) and Firies (to Scartaglen). In Division 5, Cordal had a good win over Sneem/Derrynane in Sneem and Stacks B beat Rahilly's B by two points. Down in 6, the Legion Bs were well beaten by the only A team in the division, Tuosist, and Rathmore B beat Dingle B in Páirc an Ághasigh. And finally, there was a familiar name on the scoresheet at Lewis Road on Sunday as the home team defeated Spa B: fivetime All-Ireland winner and eight-time All-Star Colm Cooper kicked 0-8 for Dr Crokes C in a solid 1-13 to 0-11 win.

Backs to the wall | By Adam Moynihan
Donie Buckley’s dismissal comes at a bad time for Kerry’s struggling defence, writes Adam Moynihan “The manager did go away and choose [his own backroom team]. That is Peter Keane’s management team.” Speaking to the Irish Examiner in October of 2018, Kerry GAA Chairman Tim Murphy was unequivocal in his assertion that it was Peter Keane's decision to bring all four of his selectors – including Donie Buckley and Maurice Fitzgerald – on board. “We left our meeting with club delegates around seven weeks ago and there was a clear mandate from the delegates that we would return with a manager and his management team,” Murphy said. “Unfortunately, there was a narrative created from the media that we were imposing certain individuals on managers, which wasn’t the case.” This narrative, as Murphy calls it, wasn’t exactly plucked out of thin air. Buckley was tipped to join the Kerry set-up before Keane was ever considered a clear front-runner for the job. In fact, in late September, it was widely reported that Fitzgerald was set for the role of manager himself, with Castleisland native Buckley also part of the ticket. It was then suggested, however, that Fitzgerald’s professional workload (he had just been appointed principal at Coláiste na Sceilge) would be an impediment to his nomination, and Keane eventually got the nod on October 8. The minor boss brought his own selectors, Tommy Griffin and James Foley, with him to senior. Fitzgerald, a selector in the previous regime and a former teammate of Keane’s at St Mary’s, and Buckley, a highly-rated defensive coach, were also unveiled as part of a five-man managerial dream team. Of course, we’re not privy to what was said behind closed doors so it’s impossible to know for sure how keen Keane was on having Fitzgerald and Buckley in the camp in the first place. Maybe he was happy out. Tim Murphy said he was. On the other hand, Tomás Ó Sé said on Twitter last weekend that Buckley’s ap-
pointment was “forced” on Keane. Who knows? Either way, it’s not too fantastical to speculate that a new manager might not be overly enthused about working alongside two men who were his rivals in terms of getting the job in the first place.
IMPROVEMENTS
The Fab Five got off to a flying start in last year’s league as they led their relatively inexperienced team all the way to the final. Kerry’s defence, which was a source of major concern under previous boss Eamonn Fitzmaurice, had improved significantly. Of course, building this new-look rearguard must have been a team effort and everyone involved deserves a share of the credit, but there’s no denying that the players were suitably impressed by Buckley’s influence. That’s hardly surprising. Buckley is hailed as a defensive guru wherever he goes and you would struggle to find a student, past or present, who
doesn’t speak of him in the most glowing of terms. And, in the words of Jay-Z, “men lie, women lie, numbers don’t”. On average Kerry shipped five fewer points per game in last year’s National League compared with the year before. Whatever they were doing back in Currans, and whoever was masterminding it, it was clearly working. All told, 2019 was a good year for the Kerry seniors and their management team. Yes, there was the disappointment of losing the All-Ireland final replay to Dublin, but few expected The Kingdom to make it that far in the first place. With young star players and a new backroom team still finding their feet at the top level, reaching two finals and pushing Dublin so close was an unqualified success.
DISHARMONY
Yet before Keane et al’s debut season had reached its conclusion, whispers about disharmony at managerial level lingered
in the air. Rumours that Buckley and Fitzgerald were dissatisfied with their roles, specifically with regard to the lack of input being afforded to them at decision-making level, surfaced as early as last summer. Then, whether fuelled by facts or by idle gossip, those stories grew legs. By the end of 2019, both Fitzgerald and Buckley were said to have quit. That speculation turned out to be false. Fitzgerald is still involved and there’s nothing to suggest that he won’t be on the line for the rest of the year. Buckley, meanwhile, was not around for the opening matches of the league, but that wasn’t necessarily notable in and of itself. He has been known to head off to Florida to attend American football training sessions around that time of the year so his initial absence from the camp was easily explained – although, having said that, he was in attendance for Kerry’s first game of the 2019 campaign against Tyrone. He was back for Kerry’s recent matches against Tyrone, Meath and Mayo and it is understood that he was preparing for last Friday’s training session when he was informed of Peter Keane’s decision to remove him from the backroom team. The timing of Buckley’s removal has to be a cause for concern. Kerry’s defence has been poor so far this year. In fact, it is currently the 30th worst defence in the country, just ahead of Leitrim and London. One would imagine that Buckley’s wisdom was needed now more than ever. The current Kerry manager has made a number of bold decisions in his year and five months at the helm and he has gotten a lot of them right. Buckley’s dismissal might help the team in the long run. The proof will be in the pudding. But Peter Keane’s backs are struggling and he has kicked one of the game’s greatest defensive minds out of the room. Now, the pressure is all on him. New Fantasy Club game to be officially launched next week Brian Kelly or Shane Murphy? Tadhg Morley or Tom O'Sullivan? Seán Quilter or Seán O'Shea? Who will you choose for your Fantasy Club football team? Here at the Killarney Advertiser we are currently developing a revolutionary new fantasy football game based on the upcoming Kerry Senior Club Championship, which kicks off on April 4*. Participants will be tasked with selecting their dream line-up of players from the county's eight senior clubs, namely Kilcummin, Killarney Legion, Dr Crokes, Austin Stacks, Kerins O'Rahilly's, Dingle, Templenoe and Kenmare Shamrocks. Fantasy points will then be earned based on the players' performances in real life, with the top managers earning prizes at the end of the month. The format will be similar to one used in the popular Fantasy Premier League game, which is played by 7.5 million people worldwide. The concept has been attempted in the GAA at intercounty level but it is believed that Killarney Advertiser Fantasy Club will be first competition of its kind at club level. The idea was first floated by Killarney Advertiser Sports Editor Adam Moynihan on his Instagram (@adammoynihan) where it received an overwhelmingly positive response. "People seem to be really excited about the potential of this game," Adam said. "It'll be a lot of work our end but it
should be good craic. "Unfortunately we'll have to limit the amount of participants - it just won't be possible to accept, let's say, a thousand entries and mark all of those scores on a weekly basis. But we'll see how many people are interested and take it from there." To register your interest in Fantasy Club 2020, simply email sport@killarneyadvertiser.ie with 'Fantasy Club' followed by your full name and your GAA club in the subject line (e.g. Fantasy Club - Mick O'Dwyer - Waterville). No further information is required at this point. The first 100 names will be guaranteed entry to the competition proper. The remaining names will be kept on file and added on a first come, first serve basis, depending on how may entries are eventually accepted. The competition will be officially launched next week and entry will be free of charge. Follow @adammoynihan on Instagram for all the latest updates. *This will, of course, depend on the coronavirus and whether or not the suspension of all GAA activity continues beyond March 29.
DECISIONS: Will John Payne and Conor Keane make your Fantasy Club team?
HOOPS: The Killarney Celtic team who defeated St Michael’s. Back: John McDonagh, Roy Kelliher, Stephen O’Mahony, Matt Keane, Liam Spillane and Wayne Sparling. Front: Stephen McCarthy, Lee Downing, Kevin O’Sullivan, Gary Keane and Adam O’Rourke.
Celts march on to Champions final MUNSTER CHAMPIONS TROPHY: SEMI-FINAL _______________________________________________________________________________
St Michael’s
0 | Killarney Celtic 1
COOKE PARK A 93rd-minute header by Adam O’Rourke sealed a dramatic late win for Celtic in Tipperary on Sunday as the Kerry champions booked their place in the final of the Munster Champions Trophy. O’Rourke’s winner was no more than the Celts deserved as they brought the game to St Michael’s from the off, and they can now look forward to another major final at a date which is still to be decided. One thing they do know for certain is the identity of their opponents. Limerick Desmond League side Rathkeale stand between Celtic and Munster glory after they got the better of Cork Business & Shipping League outfit Doolan’s Cow in the other semi-final. The way Celtic are motoring at the moment, they will more than likely head into that provincial decider as favourites.
STRONG
Michael’s are considered to be one of the top junior soccer clubs in the country but it was a strong performance from Celtic in Cooke Park as they more than held their own all over the pitch. Back-boned by the ever-dependable centre-half pairing of John McDonagh and Stephen O’Mahony and midfielders Gary Keane and Matt Keane, the Killarney side dealt with everything the hosts could throw at them. After a tense first half, the game began to open up in the second and Celtic
youngster Lee Downing went close to breaking the deadlock in the 63rd minute. Michael’s star player Jimmy Carr was denied at the other end by Roy Kelliher and Downing went close for Celtic again soon after, Adrian Walsh denying him after good work down the left by Wayne Sparling. With neither side able to find a breakthrough, the game appeared to be heading for extra time. But the Hoops had other ideas. Deep into injury time, a free kick broke to Sparling out wide and the tricky winger floated over a deep cross towards the back post. The ball sailed over the defenders’ heads and Adam O’Rourke was on hand to nod home a memorable winner and send the away sideline into raptures. So it’s Celtic, and not the Saints, who go marching on, and with an FAI Junior Cup quarter-final also on the horizon, it promises to be a big month or so for the Kerrymen.

Killarney hold tough to win West Munster Cup U18 WEST MUNSTER CUP ___________________________________________________________________________________
Tralee RFC
15 | Killarney RFC 20
TRALEE The Killarney RFC U18 squad made history on Sunday last when they defeated Tralee to capture regional cup honours for the very first time. The game was played in wintry conditions, but all in attendance were captivated right up until the final exciting play. Enjoying home advantage and with the wind at their backs, Tralee enjoyed early possession and probed menacingly with ball in hand. That early dominance yielded a well worked try following fluid interchanges between forwards and backs and a sharp lateral pass from their No. 9 worked an overlap for the left wing to crash through. A super conversion from the touchline stretched the lead to 7-0. Killarney suffered an early setback when fullback Gary Randles was forced to retire, but they gradually regrouped and got a foothold in affairs. Mark Sheahan slotted well into fullback and Pádraig Talbot alternated between attacking backline positions and forward lineout and scrum duties. Killarney’s lineout was functioning well with jumper John McCarthy providing a platform for a powerful maul and back-
line set plays. A Dion O’Neill penalty from hand kept play in the home 22 and with lineout ball secured, a forward surge resulted in Craig McKenzie-Vass burrowing over near the right corner. Tralee forced a penalty after 25 minutes that was well slotted to take the score to 10-5. Killarney introduced some more power from the bench with Sam Casey and Ciarán O’Brien launched into the coalface and the visitors crucially struck for a second try on the stroke of half-time as John McCarthy crashed over. Michael Óg Casey drilled over the conversion and Killarney led 12-10 at the interval. Tralee started the second half on a mission and came close to scoring on several occasions. Killarney’s defence scrambled and tackled ferociously to keep the line intact. A turning point arrived and the siege was lifted when a Tralee penalty shaved the outside of the post and Killarney outhalf Donnchadh Grealy returned the 22 dropout into touch on the opposition 10-yard line. Killarney enjoyed possession but it took some expansive creativity to finally unlock the defence. From a well re-

cycled ball in prime attacking position, the ball was moved left then switched right with forwards and backs handling and skip-passing before Evan Mannix dived over to bring the score to 17 points to 10. Tralee had 13 minutes to rescue a result and gallantly poured forward in waves. The Killarney tackling was resolute and powerful but the defensive line was also, at times, overeager, giving up penalties for offside that kept the home side bouncing back. Eventually the try came when a recycled ball found Cian Regan who barged over in the left corner. The conversion, which would have tied the game, appeared to be on target from the touchline, but the strong wind stopped the ball short. Killarney had two minutes to hold out and the experience gained in tough Munster Cup fixtures was evident
when the kick-off chase pinned Tralee securely into their 22. Killarney’s hunger was evident as they turned over ball, threatened the line and forced a penalty in the red zone. With the last action, Michael Óg Casey thumped the penalty over to secure a famous 20-15 win. The game brings to an end this breakthrough season for Killarney, who fielded a competitive team at this age group and competed impressively at Munster Cup level.
KILLARNEY: Rob Nealon, Craig McKenzie-Vass, Ciarán O’Brien, Adam Cronin, Sam Casey, Evan Mannix, Pádraig Talbot, Matt McAuliffe, John McCarthy, Brendy O’Donoghue, Michael Óg Casey, Donnchadh Grealy, Dion O’Neill, Ozdenis Koyun, Mark Sheahan, Aidan Keane, James Kennelly, Gary Randles and Ronn Buckley.

Firies rally engineer behind Norwegian driver's return Former World Rally Championship frontrunner Andreas Mikkelsen will make a surprise return to competition this weekend and he will have a Kerry rally engineer at his side. The Norwegian is due to contest this weekend’s Spa Rally in Belgium at the wheel of a Volkswagen Polo R5. Firies man Richard Browne is an engineer with Volkswagen Motorsport in Germany and has been assigned to Mikkelsen’s car for the weekend. The pair previously worked together when Mikkelsen was a factory driver with the German team back in 2016. Browne
was the engineering mastermind behind Mikkelsen’s victory on Rally Spain that year. When Volkswagen curtailed its WRC programme at the end of that season, Mikkelsen transferred to the Hyundai World Rally team and Browne was re-deployed within the Volkswagen organisation. They prepared for this weekend’s rally by testing the car in Belgium. It was Mikkelsen and his co-driver Anders Jæger’s first time driving a Volkswagen in over three years. “It's nice to be back working with Andreas and Anders again, and to be honest, it was an easy test because I know what he

is looking for in a car, and we could find it very quickly,” Browne told the Killarney Advertiser. “The rest of the test was about learning more with the Pirelli tyres, and also learning what to do when the road gets dirty from all the cuts.” The Spa Rally is due to get underway
around 9.30am local time tomorrow morning (Saturday) and will be run over 20 stages. It is expected to run until Sunday afternoon – however, the Belgian Government is likely to announce similar restrictions on sporting events as the Irish Government made on Thursday of this week.

In the U15 game, Kickerz’ Lily Kate Clifford made her debut and got stuck in straight away. Unfortunately, Kerry fell to a 3-0
defeat. However the score didn’t reflect a solid Kerry performance. Well done to the four MEK girls!

ROWING
Muckross Rowing Club EVENTS: In what seems like Groundhog Day, the wind and rain of last weekend once again forced the cancellation of the latest rowing competition. The Cork Head of the River had been rescheduled from Saturday, February 29 to last Saturday, March 7. Unfortunately, yet another consecutive weekend of bad weather forced the outright cancellation of the event. Before regatta season kicks off in April, each of the remaining weekends in March will see an attempt to run a Head event. This Saturday, Colaiste Iognaid Rowing Club in Galway are seeking to revive a former firm fixture of the calendar. However, the Corrib Head of the River has only attracted a small entry of local crews with clubs outside Galway mostly staying clear as their rowers have not had time on the water to prepare and confidence is yet to be established with new organisers. Should the Shannon flood levels recede, St Michael’s RC in Limerick may have the best opportunity to stage their annual Head event on Saturday, March 21 and this is the next target for Muckross RC. Sligo RC is also making a last-ditch attempt to run a rescheduled fixture on Saturday, March 28.

Kate Forde put in brilliant work and earned Gold for her efforts. Cian Forde, Darragh Forde, Muireann O'Brien and Oran Horgan followed this result and earned silver. Adam Counihan, Ali O'Donoghue, Conor O'Sullivan and Tim Kelly all won bronze in their respective categories. Unfortunately, Ciara Forde just missed out on bronze despite a tremendous showing. While our players competed, our head coach Tadhg also tested his mettle by taking part in Quest Kenmare. He spent his morning cycling, running and kayaking against the elements. Lastly, we are all very proud of our members who all performed fantastically. We look forward to seeing how far they will go! For more information about the club, please check us out on Facebook.
