Construction starts on outdoor dining but Jarveys not happy

The much awaited €600,000 outdoor dining project for the town finally began construction this week - but not everyone is happy about its timing due to the start of the tourism season. | By Sean Moriarty The Bord Fáilte funded scheme, part of the town’s response to COVID-19, will include a 620 square-metre outdoor dining area consisting of paving, landscaping, and lighting, of which 210 square-metres will be a covered dining area, was given the green light in September last year. It was hoped to have been fully completed last month at the very latest. After months of planning, funding applications and a tender process, construction work finally began this week. A new protective hoarding has been erected on Kenmare Place to prevent members of the public accidently walking into the construction site and to prevent construction material spilling on to public walkways. As a result the roadway has become much narrower. The bus setdown area in Kenmare Place is no longer available

UNHAPPY: Several Jarveys, including Dan Doona, Patrick O'Sullivan and Mike Griffin, as well as Cllr Donal Grady, are not happy about the current works on Kenmare Place.

and the number of Jarvey stands at the adjacent HaHa have been reduced. While Jarveys are not opposed to the overall plan, they believe the timing of the project is wrong as the town prepares to enter its peak tourism season. However, one of the funding conditions for the public outdoor dining area is that construction must be completed by a certain date.

ACCIDENTS

Jarveys say that there is a health and safety issue as they have witnessed buses picking up and dropping off passengers from nearby hotels in live traf-

fic. They have also seen a number of accidents – including a collision between two buses in the street since the hoarding went up earlier this week. Apart from the reduced number of Jarvey stands as a result of the narrower road, the jaunting car operators say they are losing business as potential customers cannot see the Jarvey stand at the other side of the black construction hoarding. “We are not against this, the timing is wrong, anything that helps Killarney we are for it,” Jarvey Michael O’Grady told the Killarney Advertiser. “But they seem to have forgotten the céad míle fáilte in

this case.” The Jarveys also raised concerns about traffic and said that the noise of the construction works will frighten horses. “There will be chaos here in the summer time,” added Jarvey Mike Griffin. “And if a horse shies we are in trouble again.” His colleague Patrick O’Sullivan added that “buses are now loading in the Jarvey stand”. Kenmare Place was selected for the scheme due its proximity to Killarney House and National Park, the recently developed ANAM Arts and Cultural building, Killarney Jarvey stand, Christ the King Monument and St Mary’s Church. Kerry County Council said at the time of the grant application Kenmare Place was the most suitable location based on Fáilte Ireland criteria. “This outdoor infrastructure area currently being constructed at Kenmare Place has been the subject of a statutory public consultation process which was widely publicised. Council staff have met with, and will continue to meet with, any groups, businesses or residents who have issues of concern while the works are taking place. The project commenced construction this week and the Council looks forward to its completion at the earliest opportunity,” a Council spokesperson told the Killarney Advertiser.

Business community urged to be patient during works | By Sean Moriarty The International Hotel is one of the many businesses along Kenmare Place that is affected by the construction work. Owner Tracy Coyne says she understands the Jarvey's frustrations but is calling for the entire business sector to have patience as the finished product will enhance the town’s tourism offerings. “Any initiatives to improve the Killarney product for our residents and our visitors is welcome and we are fully supportive. However, I can see the Jarveys

viewpoint that starting the works at the busiest time of year is unfortunate but we have been given assurances by the Council about working hours, noise levels and cleanliness around the site so that impact on residents and visitors to Killarney can be minimised as much as possible so that the town centre can continue to be enjoyed by all,” she told the Killarney Advertiser. “The International, like the Jarveys, will work hard to minimise the impact of the works on our guest experience. [Builder] Dan Canty is a highly professional contractor and has a great reputation for quality work. I am confident all the stops

will be pulled out to ensure the project will be completed within the agreed time frames provided and the finished product will greatly enhance Kenmare Place.”

Yesterday (Thursday) the International Hotel placed its logos on the construction fence so passers-by will know that the hotel is behind it and open for business.

GAA legends to gather for Fossa fundraiser | By Sean Moriarty Some of the greatest legends ever to grace a Gaelic football pitch will share a stage on July 5.

Killarney hotels win big in Tripadvisor awards Four Kerry hotels - including three in Killarney - have made the list of top five hotels in Ireland. | By Sean Moriarty Each year Tripadvisor selects 25 out of 833 hotels in Ireland and ranks them by Travellers' Choice. The Old Weir Lodge, Muckross was named as the number one hotel in Ireland following the Travellers' Choice rankings. Management and staff at the Ballygarry Estate, Hotel and Spa in Tralee are celebrating after being named the second-best hotel in Ireland following a Tripadvisor survey. The Killarney Park and the Cahernane House Hotel were ranked fourth and fifth respectively. Also in Tripadvisor’s Annual Awards, Loch Lein Country House was ranked number one in Ireland in its Top Small Stay’s Hotel Category. These awards recognise “iIntimate hotels

that make big impressions”. A family run hotel, this four star property is nestled into a natural landscape with stunning views across Loch Lein and the McGillicuddy Reeks. This award is based on traveller’s reviews and ratings posting on Tripadvisor throughout 2021. The country house was called an “absolute gem” and “an enchanting small hotel in a perfect locale”. Furthermore it has been ranked in this category as number seven in Europe and No 18 in the world. “We are beyond happy to have received this award and it is a testament to the wonderful and loyal staff here at Loch Lein particularly in light of the crushing impact COVID-19 has had on our industry,” said proprietor Paul Corridan.

Fossa GAA Cub is organising a fundraiser for club activities and has put together ‘A Night With Legends’ at the INEC. The event will be styled on RTE’s popular pre All-Ireland Final show ‘Up for the Match’ where footballing legends will tell some of their life stories in between music and songs. It will be hosted by author and raconteur Billy Keane and horseracing photographer Pat Healy. The cast Fossa GAA Club, home of Senior Kerry Footballers and brothers David and Paudie Clifford, have assembled reads like a who's who of football hall of fame. Kerry greats like Pat Spillane, Mike Frank Russell, Paul Galvin and Eamon Fitzmaurice will be joined by heroes from other counties like Joe Brolly, Niall Cahalane and Larry Tompkins. Civic reception edging closer to reality | By Sean Moriarty Just two hurdles stand in the way of Kerry County Council affording a Civic Reception for Jessie Buckley. The Muckross native was nominated for an Oscar and a BAFTA as Best Supporting Actress following her performance

in ‘The Lost Daughter’. She recently also received an Olivier Award for her part in London stage performance 'Caberet'. Mayor Marie Moloney is keen to recognise Buckley’s achievements in her home town and has been pushing Kerry County Council to hold a Civic Reception in her honour.

Ambrose O’Donovan will also be there. “We promise that it will be a night full of fun and laughter and some great memories and stories will be remembered from some of the greats of the GAA world,” Siobhan Kissane, chairperson of the organising team, said. This event is one of the key fundraisers for the expanding Fossa GAA Club. “The club is expanding, there are a lot of new people moving into the area, and our traditional income streams were reduced during the pandemic,” added Siobhan, who is also the club’s Coiste na nÓg officer. The fundraising drive is a joint effort between the men's, ladies and youth arms of the club with backing from the club’s executive. Other legends confirmed for the night are Colm O’Rourke (Meath), Jack O'Shea (Kerry), Darragh O Sé (Kerry), Mikey Sheehy (Kerry), Bernard Brogan Sr (Dublin), Jimmy Barry-Murphy (Cork), and Darran O’Sullivan (Kerry). Tickets cost €25 per person but groups of 12 can buy a table of 12 for €250.

“There is no problem with the Civic Reception, they [Kerry County Council] have a backlog of receptions to do [following the pandemic] and they are looking at what is the best way to do them. My biggest problem is catching Jessie at home,” Cllr Moloney told the Killarney Advertiser.

It's 'Happy Hour Again' at Courtney's Courtney’s Bar Manager Brian Murphy has told the Killarney Advertiser that he thought he was been scammed when singer Paul Heaton’s manager called him to place a €1,000 bar tab. | By Sean Moriarty Heaton, the lead singer of the House Martins and The Beautiful South, celebrated his 60th birthday on Monday. To mark the occasion he placed €1,000 bar tabs in 60 selected bars in Ireland and Britain. Courtney’s Bar on Plunkett St was one of the chosen bars. Heaton had originally planned a cycling tour throughout Ireland and Britain and hoped to visit the 60 pubs – known music venues – but the tour fell through as preparation was not possible during the pandemic.

“About two weeks ago I got a call from Paul’s management company,” Brian told the Killarney Advertiser. “My first thoughts was this is a scam, she was looking for IBAN numbers to transfer the money. I had to ask a few hard questions to check the veracity of it all. Everything added up and I was told to say nothing until Paul posted it on his social media. We had about one hundred people in and out all night. I have no idea why he picked here. I know he played Killarney years ago and, maybe, he was in during that time or maybe it's our reputation for supporting local music.”

Tidy Towns volunteers are back on the road | By Sean Moriarty Volunteers from Killarney Tidy Towns will be back on the road this Monday night for the first time since 2019. They will meet at the Lidl car park at 6pm. Despite a lack of volunteers last year Killarney still took a gold medal in the annual Tidy Towns Competition. However, it's 2011 since Killarney last won the overall title and that is something Johnny Maguire of the Killarney Tidy Towns Committee is keen to address.

Jack's back - for three nights! | By Michelle Crean It's hard to believe that it's been three years since The Grand's popular piano man played there - but punters won't have to wait too long more as Jack's back this summer. Jack Patrick Healy, who now lives in London, is returning for three very special performances this July 8, 9 and 10. "I can't believe it's been over three years since I last played at The Grand," Jack told the Killarney Advertiser this week. "Back then of course it was 'The Liquid Lounge', now recently retitled 'The Grand Piano Bar'. Shows start at 11pm and will go on until I can't sing any longer!" The shows will coincide with the one year anniversary of the passing of Jack's little

brother Thomas. "To mark the occasion, I have one very sentimental request to ask of the audience - please wear blue. That could be a dress, a shirt, a tie, their shoes or better still even a football jersey - but if it ain't blue, it wont do! The show will feature all the hits from when I used to play in Killarney, but after spending three years in London I have some new tricks up my sleeve to bring from the big smoke to the home town. I'm looking forward to seeing everyone again, laughing and of course shedding a few tears, naturally." He has also just finished writing and producing his latest song 'Forever Fourteen' which is dedicated to Thomas. "I will be releasing this later in the year but will be giving a very special performance on the nights."

“Judging this year will take place between June and September, this is the first year of proper judging for two years,” he told the Killarney Advertiser. “I am urging all businesses and residents associations to make their place stand out; bright colours, the judges like that, and lose the magnolia so we can retain our place or better again retain our national title from 12 years ago.” He also praised the efforts of the Killarney Municipal District’s street team. “They have such pride in their town, our volunteers are only putting the finishing touches to the great work they do. They go above and beyond and the whole town is proud of their sense of place.”

Busking by-laws need to be fast-tracked | By Sean Moriarty Mayor of Killarney Marie Moloney is calling for new bylaws to be fasttracked to reduce noise created by buskers in the town centre. Kerry County Council is currently preparing by-laws with regard to busking but no date has been given on their publication. “While most people, locals and visitors alike enjoy a bit of busking, it is the amplification and volume of it which it is being played that needs to be dealt with. It is not acceptable that certain individuals come into Killarney town and blast music late into the night. Singing and music can be equally enjoyed by people on the streets without the need for amplifica-

tion,” Mayor Moloney told the Killarney Advertiser. “Killarney has a lot of residents living just off the streets, some with very young children, who are constantly being disturbed by high-volumed busking. Music coming from public houses is indoors and does not carry the same as amplified music from the street. “In the interest of fairness to the residents of Killarney town centre, it is imperative that these by-laws be introduced as soon as possible as without them Gardai have little power to act on complaints." Cllr Moloney is the second elected councillor to call for more robust busking by-laws in the town following Cllr Donal Grady’s similar motion at the March meeting.

Loretto man wins big in Texas mountain biking competition | By Sean Moriarty A Loretto Road man has won a gold medal at a prestigious downhill mountain biking festival in the United States. Damien McCarthy took the top spot on the podium at the Texas Downhill Mountainbike Finals last weekend. The 28-year-old was on an extended tour of the United States and the event near Austin was his final port of call on the three month trip. Damien raced in the men's 18-29 age

category where he faced temperatures of up to 38°C. “He has been out there for three months, cycling in the mountains, he absolutely loves it,” his mother Sheila told the Killarney Advertiser. “The mountains here would not be big enough for him – he wants a bigger challenge.” Last month he placed fifth in the internationally renowned ‘Sea Otter Classic’. The Monterey, California-based event is the largest gathering of cycling enthusiasts in North America.

Local show to celebrate epic female performers

A local singer-songwriter is excited for an upcoming show where she'll feature the music of epic female performers down through the years. | By Michelle Crean The songs and stories as well as the impact they have made as artists - including Peggy Lee, Billie Eilish, Whitney Heuston, Lady Gaga, and Killarney's very own Jessie Buckley - will be part of 'Women of Note' in the Gleneagle INEC Club on Sunday, May 31. The show will include interesting facts about these women, as well as direct quotes of things they have said. "In today's world, the role of women is constantly changing and, I would hope, is being more understood and appreciated. The women whose music we will feature in this performance are not/were not only musicians. They are/were people with hopes and dreams and hardships." Athletic Club at the forefront of training technology Killarney Valley Athletics Club is the first track and field club in Ireland to embrace new technology that will help optimise athlete’s performances. | By Sean Moriarty The club has partnered with Output Sports, a Dublin based firm that has developed software that can predict how good or bad an athlete is performing which in turn allows coaches to adjust training regimes. While the technology has existed for a long time, previous versions of it were cumbersome and often involved a visit to a sports science clinic to download and evaluate the date.

Killarney Valley Athletic Club coach Tomás Griffin said the new technology is “like having a sports science lab in your pocket”. “For us coaches the partnership with Output Sports is a game changer, being able to measure progress and athlete response to training. The device allows for adaptability to training plans based on immediate data,” he said. The partnership with Output Sports has been going on behind the scenes for over two years. It was a central

part of Jordan Lee’s Paralympic training process. Initially Lee and his then coach Griffin used the older technology alongside the Output Sports product. The new software worked so well they ditched the older version in the run up to last year’s Tokyo Olympics. That success prompted Griffin to offer the new system to all club members but particularly sprinters and jumpers. “The partnership with Output is not only going to help me in my journey

to Paris 2024, but also will allow the club to further push our progression and development with all the athletes within the club, giving them in-depth and professional data like no other,” Jordan said. Meanwhile Jordan has a new coach ahead of his Paris 2024 bid. Roscommon native and Killarney resident Alan Delaney and one of Ireland’s top High Jumpers has taken over from were Griffin left off.

Chamber welcomes two-year strategy for NPWS The President of Killarney Chamber of Tourism and Commerce has welcomed the new two-year strategic action plan for the restructuring of the National Parks and Wildlife Service.

Amateur drama group tostage three new plays | By Michelle Crean If you're looking for a night out with a difference then a visit to see some hilarious short plays by a local group is ideal. Killarney based amateur drama group Four Esquires Productions, which was formed in 2019 by Brian Bowler and Paddy Osborne, will be performing their new series of short plays on May 25 in the Gleneagle Culture Club. The ethos of the group is to encourage and showcase local talent. The group had a three night sell out show in Courtney’s just before lockdown where they performed 'Every Picture Tells a Story' by Brian Bowler, 'Rent O’Killers' by

Dennis Earlie and 'Bar Flies' by Paddy Osborne. “We had planned to put on more shows but COVID put everything on hold,” Paddy said. The three new plays are 'The Letter D' – an elderly man endeavours to sell his recent inheritance of carpets and rugs online with hilarious consequences. 'The Deal' – a disillusioned hospitality worker prepares for a night out while reflecting on his chosen career path. Both are written and directed by Brian Bowler. The third play is 'Bin Wars' written and directed by Paddy Osborne and is a dark comic tale inspired by true events about two neighbours fighting over their wheelie bins. Tickets are on sale from Ticketmaster priced €10.25 excluding booking fee.

Niall Kelleher said, the plan contains a number of positive initiatives and innovative proposals that will be of enormous benefit to Killarney National Park. He said the plan, which follows detailed independent reviews, features a timeline to implement a number of recommendations to make the NPWS a more resilient and effective executive agency capable of meeting the many challenges of the 21st century. “The NPWS has a crucial role to play in Killarney with a very complex range of responsibilities, including the implementing of policies, conservation, enforcement, licensing, biodiversity, scientific advice and planning. The protection, conservation and, following the recent wildfires, restoration of the park is imperative and for the challenges to be properly met, the NPWS needs to be adequately structured, staffed and equipped,” Mr Kelleher said. He noted that, as the Minister for Housing, Local Government and Heritage, Darragh O’Brien, and Minister of State for Heritage and Electoral Reform, Malcolm Noonan, have stressed, the comprehensive internal redesign of the NPWS will result in a much stronger focus on customer service, outcomes and delivery for the public as well as more

structured engagement with NPWS stakeholders. Mr Kelleher said the fact that there will be a substantial €55 million investment in the implementation of the new plan indicates the absolute importance the Government is affording to the development and protection of the National Parks. “I particularly welcome the fact that 60 new full-time jobs will be created immediately in the NPWS with the recruitment of conservation rangers and general operatives,” he said. The Government is determined to have more NPWS staff available to work closely with communities, farmers and other stakeholders and to be in a position to cater for rapidly expanding visitor numbers. The Chamber President acknowledged that there has been a significant investment in the provision of additional car parking and enhancement of established trails and walkways in Killarney National Park in recent years. He said specific funding must also be provided for the management of the deer population and the control of invasive species, such as rhododendron, and to help improve biodiversity in the large area of the 26,000-acre park damaged by the devastating wildfires. He added the provision of education and outreach programmes to heighten awareness around biodiversity and to promote sustainable tourism was also a key objective that must be met.

Three Killarney students win big at Scifest 2022

The podcasts describe people and events in Killarney during the early decades of the 20th century. Each podcast is based on recordings made in 1985 by local men Tadhg O’Sullivan and Paddy MacMonagle.

“In this episode, Tadhg and Michael remember some of those who worked as coffin-makers, jarveys and tailors in the town a century ago. We also learn of the accidental burning of the Casino Cinema. This was a wooden structure, formerly a dance hall, where people often danced until dawn,” said Dr Patricia O'Hare. The podcast can be accessed via www. muckrosshouseresearchlibrary.ie/ Down-The-Cobbled-Lanes.php.

Bright sparks from Killarney Community College not only won the overall prize at Scifest 2022 last week but they also won the Life Science’s category award. | By Michelle Crean It was a huge achievement for the Fifth Years as 58 projects had been entered with over one hundred students participating in the MTU, Tralee. The trio of Rachel Griffin, Liam Waldron and Luke O'Sullivan, will now go on to represent Kerry in the national finals in November with their project ‘Self-similarity and Fractal Geometry: Roots of Pythagorean Theorem’. KCC had four projects in total at the com-

petition and are delighted to emerge victorious. "Everyone at the college is extremely proud of these students," their science teacher Ms Maire Spillane said. "They've always shown a huge interest in the subject and it's great that their passion and scientific minds are being acknowledged and celebrated. Unveiling of Killarney famine monument this Sunday This Sunday is National Famine Commemoration Day and in Killarney a monument, in remembrance of those who died from the town and surrounding area, is being unveiled at 2.30pm. The monument is situated outside St Columbanus' Home by the St Margaret's Road entrance. Untold numbers in the Killarney area per-

ished during An Gorta Mór 1845-1850. Hundreds passed through the doors of the Killarney Union Workhouse which is now St Columbanus' Home. Within the town boundary are several burial sites where the poor souls lost during this time were laid to rest in unmarked graves. The monument will be unveiled by Councillor Niall Kelleher, Deputy Mayor of the Killarney Municipal District.

EMOTIONAL EXPERIENCE: Pictured at the Killarney Darkness into Light walk were: Stepan Krasnenkov, Kryna Melnichuk and Natalya Krasnenkova. Photo: Tatiana McGough

Transition from darkness to light "a powerful symbol for Ukrainians" We have a proverb in Ukraine - "the darkest time comes before dawn" which means that even at the most difficult moments in the life of a person or a country, dawn comes. | By Natalya Krasnenkova And so there is hope that all pain and tragedy will surely pass, that pain and suffering are temporary and will surely come to an end. There is deep optimism in this phrase. It is this proverb that warms Ukrainians during wars, revolutions and personal tragedies. Last week, my children and I got up at dawn to join 'Darkness into Light' which took place in Killarney. I already knew that the campaign started in 2009 in Dublin and has since spread throughout Ireland and other countries. I imagined thousands of people around the world waking up, putting on their clothes to embark on this important journey that gives many people hope for life and healing from mental health problems. But when we arrived I could not have imagined that there would be so many people. Thousands of locals gathered together to start the night and completely dissolve into the darkness. My children and I were the last to go. Occasionally we heard voices or saw the light from flashlights. We were left alone near Ross Castle completely in the dark. They heard only the birdsong, saw the silhouette of the castle and the silent lake. This was the culmination of our journey. At that moment I thought of all those

who went into darkness and did not return. For me, these were not only people who shortened their lives, but also those whose lives were forcibly taken as a result of the ongoing war in Ukraine. My children and I watched the new day being born - and so the hope for life is born. As we returned, the lights grew brighter and the voices of the people around us grew louder. The trip ended at dawn. And it was there that I felt joy and elation. There were living people around, hugging, drinking tea, greeting each other and taking pictures. Life went on. In Ukraine, I have been working on the subject of death for the last two years. We promoted Anastasia Leukhina's book 'Non-scary book about life, death and everything in-between' https://non-scary.org/en/, which collected stories of many people who

DARKNESS INTO LIGHT: Natalya Krasnenkova and Tatiana McGough pictured at the Killarney Darkness into Light walk.

experienced the loss of loved ones, children, terrible diagnoses and the fight against older illnesses, as well as advice from doctors, psychologists and patients on how to cope with the most difficult life circumstances. This book, as well as 'Darkness into Light' gave people hope that there is always a choice and it belongs only to you, choosing how to live your life, even in the face of illness or loss of a loved one. It was very difficult to promote the book in Ukraine, because it touched

on the subject of death. I came up with and invited stars and thought leaders to read excerpts from the book on video. Many people voted, but many refused, because the topic of death in our society is taboo, people prefer not to talk about it. As far as I was surprised, the Irish are so actively involved in actions in which they interact with the theme of death. For me, this is an inspiring example that I will take with me to Ukraine. Therefore, I hope that next May 7 such an action will take place in Kyiv.

Irish and Ukrainian music Привіт, дорогі українці! sounded good together Last week at the Innisfallen Hotel, Irish and Ukrainian musicians came together for a joint music evening. The idea came about from amateur musician Ciaran Ryan. “We are an informal band that gathers every couple of weeks to play music," Ciaran Ryan said. "We don't have a name, but you can call us 'Le Chéile' which means "together" in Irish. We don't plan what we play, we just play what comes to mind or what someone has to offer in the evening" Ronnie Moore added that they "never play for money, just for fun usually about every two weeks". "Regarding the repertoire, that is never organised. Someone just suggests the next tune as we go along!” he said. Ukrainians, who love music and singing, really liked the impromptu concert. After Irish musicians, Ukrainians took microphones and guitars and sang several folk and modern compositions. “We all very much enjoyed your music. You have great talent. I think folk and traditional music is linked no matter where in the world it is played. It is about sharing emotions and our common human bond," Ciaran added. Ukrainians offered to play a Ukrainian song together with Irish musicians. Ronnie Moore instantly read the notes and picked up the melody. Everyone

Racing festival's back with a bang

Killarney Racecourse is set to host the first of its three summer horse-racing festivals from this weekend. Taking place from this Sunday (May 15) to Tuesday 17 inclusive, ‘MayFest’ at Killarney Races offers great racing and so much more at Ireland’s most scenic racecourse. Live music, family fun and delicious food and beverage offerings complement the best of summer racing at the track. There are a number of ticket levels and packages to choose from, whether it is close to the action general admission tickets or silver service fine dining and a table for the day, there is something for everyone at Killarney Races. “Killarney Races is a boutique festival," Chairman Ger Coughlan said. "It encompasses a wonderful mix of summer horse racing blended with live entertainment on the lawn and indoors, a wide variety of delicious food and beverage offerings, family fun and fashion. The stunning backdrop we race against is without question one of the finest in the world and we’re just a stone’s throw away from the town centre where there will be lots of aprés racing fun and frolics also. The team here simply can’t wait to see crowds back, as it really is the people

who attend that really make this place come alive.”

RACE CARD

Sunday is an all jump racing card with the first race off at 2pm and gates open from 12 noon. It will be a very special day at Killarney Racecourse, as the EBF Mares Race will be held in memory of the late Donie Sheahan, a fitting tribute to such a lovely man who adored and contributed so much to racing. Monday is an evening meeting, all jump racing again with a start time of 5pm and gates open from 3pm. The feature race is the TOTE Killarney National. Tuesday will close MayFest in style, the feature race is The Irish Examiner Handicap Flat Race. The first race goes to post at 4.55pm and gates open from 3pm. Music throughout the festival will be provided by Cathal Flaherty, Craig Counihan and SuperCéilí. On Sunday there will be children’s entertainment also, to ensure plenty of fun between races during MayFest too. For further information or to book online visit www.killarneyraces.com.

Festival in a Van is a mobile live arts event that brings live performance to communities throughout Ireland. On Friday, Festival in a Van will tour Kenmare, visiting schools and care homes with Joe Thoma and his band. It will finish the day with a trad session as a public finale in Parnell Place Kenmare at 4pm. Also on Friday in Gneeveguilla, Turreencahill Community Centre will feature musicians Bryan O’Leary, Matt Griffin, Annmarie O’Riordan and Eoin O'Driscoll. Then it's on to Killarney on Saturday, visiting the Killarney Men's Shed, Care Home and Direct Provision Centre with Aoife Granville and Deirdre Granville. These intimate performances will provide entertainment and give that festival experience to audiences in a familiar setting. The Festival in a Van will also support

shared Ukrainian and Irish Music Sessions in Killarney and Tralee, programmed and produced in partnership with Music Generation Kerry on Sunday. The Local Live Performance Programming Scheme 3 has helped to support performances by local Kerry musicians, artists, and performers. It has also welcomed back audiences and offered relief through performance and entertainment. COVID Care Concerts have also returned to the county due to support received through the scheme. They are outdoor concerts organised by the Mobile Music Machine and will perform in 13 nursing homes around Listowel, Tralee and Killarney over five days beginning this Sunday. Not all festivals welcome thousands and not all concerts have pop stars, but music and performance always provide the audience with a unique experience. These special series of performances hope to do just that. Events funded through the Local Live Performance Programming Scheme 3 will be happening throughout Kerry up to the end of June. A full schedule of events is available on www.kerrycoco.ie/arts/ events-festivals/.

Council has no plans to install public charge points Kerry County Council has said it has no plans to install public charge points for electric cars. There are now 13 different electric car charging points in Killarney. A total of three charging bays are located in shopping centres including Tesco Deerpark and the latest one at Aldi Deerpark. Only one traditional filling station has embraced the new technology and that is Randles Bros Garage on the Muckross Road. Several hotels have installed electric

vehicle chargers on their premises. These include the Killarney Plaza Hotel, the Killarney Avenue Hotel, the Great Southern Killarney, Hotel Killarney, the Gleneagle Hotel, the Cahernane House Hotel, the Lake Hotel, the Castlerosse Hotel, the Hotel Europe and the Innisfallen Hotel. Kerry County Council released this information after Cllr Niall Kelleher asked a recent Killarney Municipal District if there were plans to install more electric car chargers in Killarney. The Local Authority said it had no plans to install public charge points.

“To date, the Council has not installed and does not operate any public EV [Electric Vehicle] charge points but has worked with the private sector to facilitate the installation of EV charge points in a number of public car parks,” a Council official told the meeting. “The Council continues to be open to discussions with the community and private sector to further develop the EV charge point infrastructure in Kerry. Well known established companies are continually expanding their network in Ireland and looking for new opportunities for development. It has been noted

that numerous charge points have also recently been privately installed at hotels and accommodation providers to cater for their guests and avail of overnight charging.”

Thousands turn out for Darkness into Light – Nathan’s Walk Over 4,500 people took part in the annual Darkness Into Light – Nathan’s Walk charity walk on Saturday morning which made a welcome return after a two year hiatus as a result of the pandemic. | By Sean Moriarty The 5km walk, led by local Radio Kerry DJ Brendan Fuller from Killarney Racecourse and along the lake shore via Ross Castle, started under the cover of darkness at 4.15am and ended just as dawn was breaking raising awareness and funding for mental health by inviting walkers to take a journey from the darkness into the light. Although scaled back versions of the walk – in compliance with social distancing rules – did take place over the last two years, the 2022 edition was the first time that a group walk was allowed go ahead since the outbreak of COVID. “We had a great turn out,” founder Marie O'Carroll, who set up the Killarney walk in 2011 following the tragic loss of her 14-year-old son Nathan, told the Killarney Advertiser. “There was a great

atmosphere. The crowd were very good and the Gardai told me there were over 4,500 people at the racecourse for the start." The organisers paid tribute to volunteers, walkers and event sponsors Electric Ireland, JM Reidy’s and Independent Irish Health Foods for their support. Meanwhile two walks took place in London and both had a direct Killarney influence on the organising team. Aghadoe’s Liam Kearney took charge of a walk on the London Irish Rugby Club’s training ground. Tara Cronin looked after the Cricklewood-based launch which first took place in 2014. She was helped by Ballaugh man Noel O’Sullivan, who is the president of the GAA in Britain, and his daughter Fiona.

Skellig Michael reopening date moved to Sunday The reopening date for popular visitor attraction Skellig Michael has been moved to this Sunday. Originally the site was to reopen tomorrow (Saturday) but was changed due to poor weather and sea conditions over the past few days. Instead the Office of Public Works (OPW) has deferred the reopening date to this Sunday (May 15) to allow OPW Guide Staff to travel safely to the island in advance of opening, and to carry out final preparations and checks of the island prior to visitors arriving. Intending visitors are advised to consult gov.ie/opw for updates ahead of planning their visit. “I am very pleased to be able to share this much-anticipated good news with holidaymakers eager to visit Sceilg Mhichíl

this summer and with the local rural communities who rely on tourism to the island," Patrick O’Donovan TD, Minister of State with responsibility for the Office of Public Works (OPW), said. "I was privileged to visit this unique UNESCO World Heritage Site last year to view the ongoing conservation works at the upper and lower lighthouse and the development of visitor facilities on the island, which will continue throughout the season. These works will preserve the island’s fragile cultural heritage and will help us to protect, conserve and promote an appreciation of the early monastic site and its breath-taking natural setting for present and future generations.”

Local company showcases Kerry in the Middle East 15 tourism companies from Ireland – including Kerry's Skellig Six18 Distillery – joined Tourism Ireland over the weekend at the inaugural Discover Europe Travel Summit in Dubai. buyers from the GCC. “We were delighted to host the first ever Discover Europe Travel Summit, in conjunction with the German National Tourist Board, Switzerland Tourism and the Austrian National Tourist Office," Aisling McDermott, Tourism Ireland’s Manager Asia and Middle East, said. "The event offered a great opportunity to increase awareness of Ireland among the influential travel buyers from the GCC and secure a greater share of their valuable business. Our message for those buyers is that Ireland is open for business again and we cannot wait to welcome back their clients from the Middle East.”

made a significant contribution to improving their neighbourhood, working collectively. The competition culminates with a Gala Awards Ceremony. Fifth time lucky for Marie and Garry

WEDDING OF THE WEEK

26

It was a case of fifth time lucky for Killarney couple Marie Morris and Garry Tangney who were finally married on April 23. COVID played a big role in the wedding date changes as the couple anxiously waited to tie the knot. The original wedding day was planned for March 2020 but six weeks beforehand the country and the world went into the first harsh lockdown. Rescheduled for October 2020, it was heartbreaking to once again cancel the milestone event so they tried again for March 2021 but, as with many things during the pandemic, nothing booked was certain to go ahead so an August 2021 date was once again cancelled. Finally in April just gone the couple, Marie (32) from Spa and Garry (33) from Beaufort, happily joined with their close family and friends and were able to exchange their vows in St Mary's Cathedral celebrated by Fr Kieran O'Brien, followed by a huge celebration in The Sneem Hotel. "It was brilliant," Marie, daughter of Dan and Kathleen Morris, told the Killarney Advertiser. "You could feel this incredible atmosphere. The hotel were so accommodating with the rescheduling, they were

fabulous." Garry, son of Juliette Sheehan and Derry Tangney, met Marie when both were in secondary school in Killarney. Garry attended The Sem while Marie was a student in St Brigid's. He got down on one knee on January 28 2018, 12 years after they first got together. On their wedding day the bridal party included Best Man Ger Hartnett and Groomsmen Paud Hartnett and Timmy O'Sullivan. Maid of Honour was Marie's twin sister Catherine Dillane, with Bridesmaids Fiona McSweeney, Louise Moynihan and Ciara Kelly. Pageboys were Marie's nephews Jack Morris (5) and Danny Morris (3), with Garry's cousin Frankie O'Doherty. Flowergirls were Garry's cousins Mia O'Doherty (5) and Ruby Healy (3), and Marie's niece 11-month-old Katie Dillane. Guest of honour was Garry's grandfather Dikie Tangney from The Black Valley. The couple enjoyed a three night stay in Dubai and a week in the Maldives for their honeymoon. "My only regret is we can't do it all over again."

Average Kerry rent €1,125 - up 101% from its lowest point Rents in Munster rose 12.6% year-on-year, reflecting very low availability - with just 131 homes available to rent on May 1 - down over two thirds year-on-year. Rents in Munster rose 12.6% year-onyear, reflecting very low availability with just 131 homes available to rent on May 1 - down over two thirds year-onyear. In Kerry, rents were on average 15.4% higher in the first quarter of 2022 than a year previously. The average listed rent is now €1,125, up 101% from its lowest point. Nationwide rents in the first quarter of 2022 were an average of 11.7% higher than the same period a year earlier, according to the latest Rental Report by daft.ie. The average market rent nationwide between January and March was €1,567 per month, up 2.8% on the last three months of 2021 and more than double the low of €765 per month seen

in late 2011. While there have been differences in regional trends in rents in recent quarters, the rate of increase was similar across all major regions between early 2021 and early 2022. In Dublin, market rents rose by 10.6% year-on-year, while in Cork and Galway cities, rents rose by 10.2% and 13.8%. Inflation was higher in Limerick and Waterford cities, at 15.5% and 16.2% respectively, while outside the cities the average increase was 12.7%

SCARCITY

The sharp increase in market rents around the country reflects a significant worsening in the record scarcity of rental homes. Nationwide, there were just 851 homes available to rent on May 1,

down from over 3,600 a year ago and another new all-time low in a series that extends back over 15 years to 2006. The report also includes an estimate of the trend in rents for sitting tenants since 2010, as compared to new tenants paying market rates. While inflation in market rents is currently above 10%, and market rents have doubled over the past decade, ‘stayer’ rents have increased by just 1.5% over the past year and by less than 40% over the past 10 years. “The latest figures confirm the overall strength of demand for rental accommodation in Ireland," Ronan Lyons, As-

sociate Professor of Economics at Trinity College Dublin and author of the Daft Report, said. "While strong demand for housing reflects underlying economic health, it becomes a challenge when there is inadequate supply to meet it. In Ireland’s case, the economy has suffered from an under-provision of new rental accommodation for over a decade. As a result, market rents have doubled and, as shown in this latest report, rental homes have become unbelievably scarce. The focus for policymakers must remain on creating the conditions for tens of thousands of new rental homes to be built over the coming years.”

Swimmers plan three lakes charity challenge The team of instructors and swimmers of Dieter’s Swim Academy are getting their swim gear on for two very deserving organisations, the Irish Cancer Society and Crumlin Children’s Hospital. The challenge is to swim the length of the three lakes of Killarney - 15 kilometres in total during May. It can be undertaken individually or in teams of three and all entrants will be put into a draw for free three month family membership at the leisure centre. Now they won’t be braving the cold temperatures of our lovely lakes instead they will be swimming in the comfort of the Aquila Club Leisure Centre (600 lengths) in the famous Gleneagle Hotel. Entrants will receive a log book where they can track their lengths after each time they swim. Dieter’s Swim Academy has been based at the Aquila Club since 1999 and has swimmers ageing from as young as

four all the way to 16. The swim academy specialises in providing high quality swim lessons, both individual and group lessons, as well as a swim club. The two charities are very close to the hearts of the swim academy staff and swimmers with Dieter himself losing his father to cancer in the past few years. “After a long hard two years with COVID all the swimmers were delighted to get back to their lessons this year," Dieter Gogsch, Swim Coordinator, said. "They all wanted to do something at the end of this swim season to mark our comeback and what better way to do it then with a charity swim challenge. We hope to get as much support and donations for our two chosen charities.” All the info on taking part and donating can be found on the Aquila Facebook and Instagram pages or by contacting the Aquila Club directly by phone 064 6636178 or on iDonate: DietersSwimChallenge2022.

The perfect hanging basket is easy to create When the weather is as glorious as it has been this last week, where do you start? The garden beckons, although, if I am honest, so do windows, floors and most other surfaces which come to light in the bright sunshine! However, this is a gardening column and not a householder’s mope! So ... do you start with weeding, edging or mowing? Well, I would say, colour. We have had enough grey and now is the time for fun! Starting in the borders, perennials are all showing signs of life. Don’t worry if they seem slow, those in garden centres are generally cultivated in protective environments and are way ahead of their counterparts in the garden. Hardy osteospermums, campanulas, geraniums and aquilegias will all be showing colour. Invest now in lupins, penstemon, aconites and delphiniums, so they can really have a long growing season and give you months of colour. Most perennials enjoy sunshine and well drained soil, plants such as rudbeckia, echinacea and heleniums should be planted in such sites. However, there are plenty of choices for the more common heavy, wet soils. Phyllis, or cape fuchsia, is a particularly hardy plant. Bearing long, tubular flowers in pinks, salmon or cream, it can grow to 1.2m high. It is semi-evergreen in the winter, and thrives in wind, wet and even shade. I recommend you give it a good trim every spring, both to encourage new, fresh growth, as well as keeping it in check. Astilbes are also ideal for trickier spots, their long flowering

season of pale pink, crimson or cream plumes can brighten up any area. They will grow in the wettest of gardens, which makes them ideal for pond side planting too.

HANGING BASKETS

A question which I am asked every year without fail is how to ‘do a good basket’. The perfect hanging basket is easy to create if you follow a few simple guidelines. Using plastic or rattan type baskets will prevent them drying out very fast, and they are easier to manage. If you have wire baskets, I recommend coco liners. Always use a round piece of polythene (I usually cut a circle from the compost bag and use that) between liner and compost. You need not bother putting drainage holes in it – this way you prevent dripping when you water. Baskets dry out so quickly as they are open to all the elements such as sun and wind, however they rarely get rain. For this reason using water retentive gel is helpful, but only to a certain extent. Diligent watering and feeding is key. Baskets contain so little compost yet support so many plants, that feeding is vital. Slow release fertiliser breaks down through dampness, however baskets dry out so often that it often does not get the chance to work properly. So, again, an all-purpose liquid feed is what I advise. Remember - avoid the temptation of too many plants in a basket! I find setting a theme is best when shopping for plants but it does not always stop me from buying too many though!

A WEEKLY ROUND-UP OF NEWS • VIEWS FROM KERRY AND AROUND THE WORLD SUPPORT

INSPIRED BY DANNY CASEY

Around Ireland solo cycle to raise awareness about climate change A Dublin man hopes his challenging 2,750km, 17 days solo cycle around Ireland will raise climate change awareness and promote positive climate action in Ireland. 'ClimateCycleSOS' won’t be easy, as Alan Henry will have no daily support vehicle, he’ll be fuelled on a purely plant based (vegan) diet, and create minimal single-use plastic waste and use no non-essential new cycle equipment, all in the name of climate action. Funds raised from the cycle will support the work of education and youth charity ECO-UNESCO. “This will be a huge challenge for me, a 2,750km round-Ireland cycle is no small feat, but I’m really excited to get started," Alan said. "Climate change and promoting climate action is something I feel very strongly about and if I can raise awareness and positive action around the topic I will. This route has never before been completed in this timeframe under the principles of a plant based diet, minimal single-use plastic waste and no new non-essential equipment, so I’m eager to attempt this great challenge.”

THE ROUTE

'ClimateCycleSOS' takes place over 17 consecutive days, covering more than 2,750km of Ireland's coastline by bike. Starting and finishing from the East Pier in Dun Laoghaire, Dublin, the route is planned in a clockwise direction, covering 20 of Ireland’s spectacular coastal counties. The route will include climb-

From June 3 to June 19, covering a gruelling average 160km each day, Alan will hit the following places, so be sure to keep an eye out for him on his route around Ireland as he spreads his climate action message; Dun Laoghaire (Dublin), Gorey (Wexford), Tramore (Waterford), Ballycotton (Cork), Baltimore (Cork), Kenmare (Kerry), Dingle (Kerry), Bunratty (Clare), Galway, Westport (Mayo), Belmullet (Mayo), Sligo, Dungloe (Donegal), Buncrana (Donegal), Portrush (Antrim), Portaferry (Down), Blackrock (Louth). Bridge collapses as weather reaches unprecedented levels A major bridge has collapsed following horrendous weather conditions in Pakistan. An intense heat wave that has led to weeks of dangerous air quality and rampaging wildfires causing the rapid melt of the Shishper Glacier in northern Pakistan, led to destructive flooding downstream. The water volume at the Shishper glacier lake increased by 40% over the past three weeks as a result of an unusual

early-season spike in temperatures. It resulted in the Hassanabad Bridge in Pakistan's Hunza Valley buckling under the pressure on Saturday as a melting glacier sent torrents of water through. Floodwaters also swept away two power plants in the area. Officials evacuated individuals living in vulnerable locations near the floodwaters. In mid-May 2019, NASA predicted that the Karakoram Highway, large numbers of homes in the village of Hasanabad,

Pakistan's Federal Minister for Climate Change, Sherry Rehman, said in late April that Pakistan, for the first time in decades, went from winter to summer, without much of a spring. On Twitter he said that a temporary bridge was to be constructed within 48 hours. "Pakistan has the highest number of glaciers outside the polar region, and many are losing mass due to high global temperatures," Rehman said. Meteorologists from AccuWeather have said there's no relief in sight for the foreseeable future with searing heat projected to continue in the region.

Andy Warhol’s ‘Shot Sage Blue Marilyn’ made after the death of Marilyn Monroe in 1962 - sold in New York in less than four minutes of bidding at Christie's Auction House. The painting is screened with bright red, orange, blue, sage blue, and turquoise over her eyes, hair and lips. It was built around a promotional photo by Henry Hathaway of Monroe, one of Hollywood's best known stars, from the 1953 film 'Niagara'. The previous record, a 1955 painting by Pablo Picasso, was set in 2015 when Les Femmes d’Alger (Version O) – sold for $179.4m. Before that the previous record was held by Jean-Michael Basquiat when a 1982 skull painting sold for $110.5m in 2017. The buyer of the latest art work is reportedly US art dealer and owner of a chain of galleries Larry Gagosian. “Shot Sage Blue Marilyn is the absolute pinnacle of American pop,” Alex Rotter, chairman of 20th and 21st century art at Christie’s, said. “The painting transcends the genre of portraiture, superseding 20th century art and culture.”

Police officer accidently drives over sunbather! A relaxing day at the beach turned into a nightmare for one 23-yearold woman after a police car drove over her. The woman who was sunbathing on the sand was rushed to hospital after a Pinellas County Sheriff’s Office Deputy made a right turn from his parked position on beach patrol at St Pete Beach, Florida, just west of St. Petersburg. He was driving a Cheverolet. According to the Pinellas County Sheriff's office, deputies were chatting to pedestrians on the beach when alerted to a 911 incident. "Deputies assigned to the Major Accident Investigation Team are conducting a deputy-involved crash investigation in St Pete Beach," the sherriff's office said in a

statement. "Investigators say Deputy Brien was on beach patrol behind 4450 Gulf Boulevard, and was parked facing west in his 2017 fully Marked Chevrolet Tahoe. While Deputy Brien was speaking to several pedestrians on the beach, he was dispatched to a 911 hang up call at another location. Deputy Brien made a right turn from his parked position, when he struck 23-year-old Robin Diffenderfer while she was lying on her back in the sand. "According to investigators, the front driver side tire of the Tahoe drove over Diffenderfer’s right side and mid to upper back area. Diffenderfer sustained non-life threatening injuries and was transported to the hospital. Deputy Brien was not injured. The investigation continues."

30 YEARS: MABS Regional Managers pictured at a celebratory event held in Cork City on Monday to mark the 30th anniversary of MABS. Photo: Diane Cusack

MABS marks 30 years supporting the people of Ireland MABS, the Money Advice and Budgeting Service is marking 30 years since it was established to support the people of Ireland who are in debt or at risk of getting into debt. It is funded and supported by the Citizens Information Board (CIB) and provides independent, confidential and non-judgmental money advice and budgeting services. A celebratory event was held in Cork City on Monday and saw a unique 30 year exhibition unveiled, showcasing the journey of MABS from its beginnings. Established in 1992, MABS was introduced as part of a pilot scheme to address problems of moneylending and indebtedness. Its first offices were located in Cork City, Limerick, Cherry Orchard Dublin, Waterford, and Clare. There are now 51 MABS offices and outreach clinics nationwide. Over the past 30 years, MABS has played a key role in the community across a number of areas including money management education, Abhaile – free mortgage arrears support and the formation of National Traveller MABS, which works to reduce poverty, discrimination and the financial exclusion of Travellers in Ireland. MABS has also played an important role

in raising awareness of policy and practice reforms that need to be implemented at local and national level. In 2007, MABS launched their National Helpline and as of the end of 2021, received 326,994 calls. “CIB has funded MABS since 2008 and prior to this had a role in delivering training to MABS staff," Fiona Coyne, CEO of the Citizens Information Board (CIB), said. "CIB has worked with MABS to grow and develop new services including delivering one of the statutory debt relief solutions, the Debt Relief Notice (DRN) introduced as part of the Insolvency Act 2012 and CIB worked with MABS to develop the Dedicated Mortgage Arrears service as part of Abhaile. As the cost of living continues to rise, now more than ever, it is essential that the public has access to a free, confidential and non- judgmental advice service. I would like to congratulate MABS on this milestone and wish their teams across the country the very best of luck for the next 30 years.” For more information visit www.mabs. ie or call the helpline on 0818 07 2000, available Monday to Friday from 9am to 8pm. Over half of Irish households admit to wasting water Research commissioned by Irish Water shows that over half of Irish households (53%) admit to wasting water, even though some eight in 10 (78%) know it is important to take steps to conserve it. The research released this week coincides with the launch of Irish Water’s new, Conservation Calculator www. water.ie/calculator, which will assist households across the country to assess their water usage habits and find out how much water they are saving on a daily basis. It also offers useful and practical tips on how to reduce water usage and track their progress. The research also highlights that less than one in five respondents report actively conserving water in their homes. However, almost two in five (40%) reveal that they are interested in future planned water services initiatives. Each day in Ireland, 1.7 billion litres of water travels through a network that includes 63,000km of pipes to supply treated drinking water to homes, busi-

nesses, hospitals, schools and farms nationwide. The treatment process is a lengthy and complex one with up to seven stages that can take up to three days to make raw water suitable to drink. In addition, Irish Water is also continuing its First Fix Free programme which helps households that may be using higher level of water than average, which could signal a potential leakage problem. Together with the homeowner the Irish Water team will investigate the cause of the leak and fix the issue to curtail any further potential leaks. “Our new calculator is designed for everyone to use – and school going children will, we think, particularly like examining their water usage at home," Ian O'Mahoney, Irish Water’s Regional Operations Manager, said. "It offers practical advice on conserving water, to ensure we have a sustainable water supply for everyone in years to come. We are encouraging everyone to play their part with us and think water conservation.”

HEALTH & FITNESS Advice - By Brian Foley Brian is available for advice and fitness consultations, Call 087 403 0894 or email info@activate.ie • www.activate.ie

The real path to success

This is what the path to success looks like; you’re going to make progress, then you’re going to backtrack almost to zero again, then you’ll make a bit more progress, and then you’ll backtrack almost to the point you were last time. Progress, backtrack; progress; backtrack. Gain weight, lose weight. Get 20 unbroken pull-ups, fall to six again. But here’s the reason to keep going: Every time you loop back, you won’t go quite as far backward as before. The loops get smaller. And you’ll also start to notice that you’re not backtracking quite as often as before. Someday you’ll look up and think, “Wow, I’ve gone a whole year without gaining any major weight”, and when you have little bumps, thinking this way will help you keep your perspective. A friend of mine often quotes the term “high class problems”, and I love the phrase because it reminds me that while problems will never go away, they get smaller in magnitude and less frequent over time. Deadlift dropped from 120 to 90? Shame. At least you can still pick al-

most a hundred kilos off the floor! Many people get stuck in that first loop of fitness forever: try something, make progress, fall off. Sometimes their programmes, diets or tricks are unsustainable, sometimes they’re boring and sometimes they just don’t work. But usually, after six weeks, the exerciser is a bit further along. And even if he or she falls off, the fall won’t be all the way back. Maybe after too much eating, drinking, and resting you’ve fallen backward, but you can still show up. You haven’t lost your touch. And when you fall back again, you’ll be even further ahead. You’re building a margin for lapses. If for no other reason, go to the gym today because today’s problems are slightly less horrible than last year’s problems. I’ve been there.

Bike to Work Scheme Q: What exactly is the Bike to Work Scheme? A: The Bike to Work or Cycle to Work Scheme means your employer will pay for a new bike and equipment to encourage you to cycle to and from work. You then repay the cost back through regular payments from your salary. You save because your repayments are not liable to tax, USC or PRSI. Q: How do I buy a bike under the scheme? A: Check with your employer first to see if they operate the scheme. They may allow you to select the bicycle and equipment from any shop, or only certain bicycles from specific shops. Q: How much can I save? A: You can save up to 52% of the retail cost of the bike and equipment if you pay the highest rate of tax. Your repayments come out of your salary before tax, USC and PRSI are deducted. Q: How much can I spend and what can I buy? A: You can buy one new push bike and related equipment up to the max value

of €1,250 or one new e-bike or pedelec (electrically-assisted bike) and related equipment to the max value of €1,500. Q: How often can I get a new bike? A: Once every four years. The four-year period between tax breaks is counted by tax year. As long as you bought your bike in 2018, regardless of what month it was, you can avail of the next tax relief in January 2022. Q: Who owns the bike? A: You do! You are fully responsible for the upkeep, safety and road worthiness of the bike upon completion of the sale. Therefore, it is recommended you get it insured in particular against theft. _________________________________________________ Find out more about the Bike to Work Scheme on citizensinformation.ie, or you can call a member of the local Citizens Information Service in Kerry on 0818 07 7860. Kerry Hospice needs Christmas Card artists

With over two hundred days left to Christmas, members of the Kerry Hospice Foundation are busy planning and preparing for the launch of their eagerly awaited, and much in demand, creative Christmas cards.

This year they are enlisting the help of the Kerry public to come up with creative designs for the unique collection of cards which are a major strand of funding for the charity. “Kerry Hospice Foundation is looking for your ideas for our annual Christmas Card pack. All artists from around the county are invited to submit paintings of Christmas and we are open to your interpretation of what Christmas is for you. As a guideline we might suggest something on the lines of winter country scenes, busy street scenes, some famous landmarks from around the county all with a Christmas theme,” Ursula O’Connell from the Kerry Hospice Foundation, said. The Christmas card committee would also encourage artists of all abilities and ages to create some nativity scenes to

embrace the message of Christmas and some playful scenes to include children, the heart of Christmas for all families. The card will measure 19x14cms and can be landscape or portrait. “The Christmas Cards are very popular with our supporters and a huge part of our fundraising campaign each year. This is an ideal forum for the successful artists to showcase their creative work. For many years we have been fortunate, honoured and delighted to have the incredible support of Kerry Group who has generously sponsored the cards. This has enabled us to produce a top quality product that wings its way all over the world at Christmas time.” Kerry Hospice Foundation is asking artists and the public to submit their work by June 24. Paintings can be dropped into, or posted to, the Suaimhneas Centre at the Palliative Care Unit, Kerry General Hospital, Tralee. All work will be returned in due course. For any further details please contact Ursula O'Connell, Christmas Card Committee at 087 7450126.

Exfoliating is extremely important before you start waxing to get rid of old skin cells and possibly trapped hairs, but let it rest 24 hours before your waxing appointment. Mitts, dry brushes and loofahs are great for the legs and help with improving circulation for anti-cellulite also. If it's your first wax of the season book a full body exfoliation as this will help leave the body smooth. Improve your moisturising game by applying it everyday after you shower. Eating the right foods can really help your skin's hydration as unhealthy foods increase free radicals which accelerate cell oxidation and this in turn speeds up the ageing process. Eat plenty of good fats; nuts, avocados, oily fish, as well as fruits, leafy greens and make sure to drink plenty of water.

Before your first waxing treatment let your hair grow for at least two weeks and also avoid the sun and sunbeds for at least two days before your appointment. Heat treatments like saunas are best to avoid as well for 24 hours before waxing also. Now you're ready for summer waxing! I hope these tips come in handy. If it's your first time don't worry it's not that sore and the results outweigh the little pain. The hair starts to regrow softer and lighter straight away. It won't last that long initially, but it will definitely last longer than shaving every day. You won't be left with stubble, sharp hair regrowth or bumpy skin. Male waxing usually consists of back or chest waxing, but we get requested to wax arms, legs, neck, nose, and brows. The most requested waxing for women is legs, underarm and Hollywood. • For more information or to make a booking call Jill on 064 6632966.

KIDS CYCLE: Children are welcome to take part in this year's Ring of Beara Cycle taking place on May 28. Photo: Marek Hajdasz

Kids welcome to take part in Ring of Beara Cycle Adults are not the only ones getting on their bikes for the Ring of Beara Cycle as the event also has its very own cycle for children around the town of Kenmare. Not only does this give kids a chance to join in the days’ activities with their parents on May 28, but it’s free! Plus it’s a great way for kids to get outdoors and exercise in a fun and safe environment. The Ring of Beara Kids’ Cycle is open to any child in national school between Third and Fifth Class. It starts at 10am on the day, well after the adults have set-off, and follows a 2km route around Kenmare town starting in Kenmare Square.

A team of marshals will supervise the route and help ensure the safety of all children who participate. Anyone who wishes to register a child for the cycle can do so from 9.30am at the marquee located in Kenmare Square on the day of the event. Parents and guardians are welcome to cycle with their children. All participants should bring and wear a safety helmet for the cycle. You do not have to be registered for the Ring of Beara Cycle for your child to take part, and cycling with your child is not mandatory. Kids will also receive their own special medal when they cross the finish line!

Rare pre-World War 2 cars on a Kerry tour A total of 54 pre-1940 cars were on a tour of Kerry this week and the drivers overnighted at the Dunloe Hotel and Gardens just outside Killarney. The drivers were taking part in the Shamrock Vintage Challenge – a navigational and driving test competition for cars that were manufactured before World War 2. It began on Sunday in Kilkenny and the drivers arrived in Killarney on Monday night after undergoing four driving tests on the farm of Billy Coleman. The rally legend was guest of honour at the event’s gala dinner that evening. They spent

Tuesday driving local challenging roads like the Gap of Dunloe, Ballaghbeama and Ballaghasheen. On Wednesday the drivers spent the day touring West Kerry, taking in Slea Head and Conor Pass. The group of cars included Aston Martins, Bentleys, Talbots and MGs. Drivers came from all over Ireland, Britain, Germany and Switzerland. “All the drivers were blown away by the stunning scenery on the route," said joint Clerk of the Course Shane Houlihan. The oldest car in the event was a 1906 Bianchi which was driven by its owner Luke Roberts from his home in Oxfordshire, England.

Nagle’s drivers the star attractions at Déjà Vu charity road run The two drivers who gave Paul Nagle his greatest World Rally Championship results will lead a charity road run in Tralee on May 28. Déjà Vu Tralee will trace the history of motorsport in Kerry as part of Kerry Motor Club’s 50th anniversary. It will also raise funds for Recovery Haven in Tralee. Helping them do it are some of the biggest names in Irish and International motorsport including World Rally Championship stars Craig Breen and Kris Meeke. Aghadoe man Nagle guided Meeke to five World Rally Championship event wins between 2015 and 2017. Breen and Nagle are currently in third place in the 2022 World Rally Championship ahead of next weekend’s Rally Portugal. “When Kerry Motor Club invited us to become part of their 50th anniversary celebrations we were only too happy to oblige," Déjà Vu founder and internationally renowned co-driver, Dr Beatty Crawford, said. “They had all the ingredients to help us put on an outstanding Déjà Vu Motor-

on The Wild Atlantic Way. Over 150 cars are expected – some of them the finest motorsport cars on this planet, more rare classics out for a onceoff drive. They include 30 Fords including an RS 200; 16 Porsches; 14 Minis; 11 Subarus; seven Opels; six Toyotas; five Lancias, Renaults and Sunbeams; four Vauxhalls, BMWs and Audis; three Hillmans, Triumphs and Volkswagens; two MGs, Jaguars, Fiats, Peugeots and Ferraris - yes a 308 and a fabulous F40; and one Mitsubishi, Honda, Nissan, Saab and an Aston Martin. They have history in tests such as Minard Castle, Slea Head and Conor Pass, special stages that have been used on The Circuit of Ireland and Circuit of Kerry. “Add in the excellent charity Recovery Haven Kerry, the support of Rentokil Initial, Kerry County Council and Tralee Chamber Alliance, MIS Motorsport Insur-

ance and an excellent venue in The Rose Hotel for our headquarters. The icing on the cake - the unbounding enthusiasm of Kerry Motor Club. On previous Déjà Vu Motorsport events we have brought you the wonders of Killarney, the Antrim North Coast and Donegal. All the messages, phone calls, mass cards and condolences on RIP showed us how very much Dad was thought of and loved in his beloved Killarney and far beyond. Special thanks to all those who cared for Dad throughout his illness and in his final days. To Dr. Mags Clifford, Dr. Omar and the whole team in the in-patient palliative care unit UHK. They were outstanding in their care of Dad, showing great compassion and sensitivity during his time there, especially when Mom was also a patient. In Dad’s last days, the palliative care team made such an effort to care for us as a family, knowing that we had also lost Mom so recently. Thank you from the bottom of our hearts, you are all true angels. A special word of thanks to St. Joseph’s Care Home Killorglin who also cared for Dad for a short few weeks during his illness. Thanks to all the staff at Farranfore Medical Centre and Kennelly’s Pharmacy for their long time care of Dad. As it is not possible to thank everyone, please take this acknowledgement as a token of our appreciation. If time exists in heaven, Do you still rise with the sun Do you and Mom share breakfast Before the new day has begun Can the heavens hear your laughter As you sit and reminisce About the times we had together And all the people that you miss Is music all around you, All those songs you held so dear Do you and Mom still sing together The way you did when you were here I think that heaven must be grateful To have you there each day To bring your easy laughter And your silly sense of play. O Holy Spirit, you who solve all problems, light all roads so that I can attain my goal. You gave me the divine gift to forgive and forget all evil against me and that in all instances of my life you are with me. I want in this short prayer to thank you for all things you have given me as you confirm once again that I never wanted to be separated from you in spite of all material illusions. I wish to be with you in Eternal Glory. Thank you for mercy towards me and mine. This prayer must be said for three days, after three days the favour will be granted.

PRAYER TO ST. JOSEPH O St. Joseph, whose protection is so great, so strong, so prompt before the throne of God, I place in you all my interest and desires. O St. Joseph, do assist me by your powerful intercession, and obtain for me from your divine Son all spiritual blessings, through Jesus Christ, our Lord. So that, having engaged here below your heavenly power, I may offer my thanksgiving and homage to the most loving of Fathers. O, St. Joseph, I never weary contemplating you, and Jesus asleep in our arms; I dare not approach while He reposes near your heart. Press Him in my name and kiss His fine head for me and ask Him to return the kiss when I draw my dying breath. St. Joseph, Patron of departing souls pray for me. This prayer was found in the fiftieth year of Our Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ. In 1505 it was sent from the Pope to Emperor Charles when he was going into battle. Who ever shall read this prayer or hear it or keep it about themselves, shall never die a sudden death, or be drowned, nor shall be burned in any fire or shall be overpowered in battle. Say for nine mornings for anything you desire. It has never been known to fail, so be sure you really want what you ask for. In thanks for request granted.

MIRACLE PRAYER Dear Heart of Jesus, in the past I have asked You for many favours. This time I ask you this very special one (mention favour). Take it, dear Heart of Jesus and place it within Your own Heart where Your Father sees it. Then, in His merciful eyes it will become Your favour not mine. Amen. Kerry see off battling Cork to advance to Munster final MUNSTER SEMI-FINAL __________________________________________

Cork 0-11 | Kerry 0-23 PÁIRC UÍ RINN

A run of eight straight points between the 51st and 64th minutes lifted Kerry to what was ultimately a comprehensive victory over Cork at Páirc Uí Rinn on Saturday. Cork had frustrated their fiercest rivals up until then and some excellent kicking by Steven Sherlock and Cathail O’Mahony had them trailing by the minimum. With David Clifford being well marshalled by a combination of Kevin Flahive and Seán Powter, Kerry had struggled to find their rhythm but that string of unanswered scores finally put the contest to bed. The victory tees up a Killarney Munster final against either Limerick or Tipperary on Saturday, May 28.

PERFECT

This match was played in front of a virtually full Páirc Uí Rinn in perfect conditions but, save for a Cork mini-run around the 26-minute mark, it failed to really burst into life in the first half. Kerry boast arguably the best forward division in the country but Cork’s Steven Sherlock was the stand-out marksman of the opening period. He kicked the hosts first six points; the fifth was his first from play and also the score of the half. David Clifford (two), Paudie Clifford, Stephen O’Brien and Séan O’Shea (two) had given The Kingdom a 7-3 lead with 20 minutes on the clock before Sherlock (three) and Cathail O’Mahony roused the home crowd by making it a draw game. The visitors finished the half in the ascendancy, however, and a great point (as he was being fouled) by the excellent

Diarmuid O’Connor plus a terrific Tony Brosnan score gave them a two-point half-time lead.

MORAN

O’Mahony’s kicking kept the Rebels within striking distance at the beginning of the second half but the introduction of David Moran at midfield coincided with Kerry’s best spell of the match. With Gavin White also exploding into the game, Jack O’Connor’s side eased into fourth gear and left Cork in their wake. Seán O’Shea accounted for a good portion of Kerry’s match-sealing points and subs Micheál Burns and Paul Geaney also got in on the act late on. Cork’s second-half performance can perhaps be summed up by the fact that they registered just one point in the last 20 minutes. Kerry’s backs deserve credit here: their tackling was as intense as it was concerted. Jack O’Connor’s biggest enemy now is time. His team face a three-week layoff before the Munster final and, assuming they win that match as expected, there will be another four-week break before the All-Ireland quarter-final.

KERRY: S Ryan; G O’Sullivan, J Foley, T O'Sullivan; B Ó Beaglaoich, G White, T Morley; D O’Connor (0-1), J Barry; S O’Brien (0-2), Seán O’Shea (0-10, 8f, 1 ‘45), A Spillane; T Brosnan (0-1), D Clifford (0-4, 3f), P Clifford (0-2). Subs: P Geaney (0-2), D Moran, P Murphy, M Burns (0-1), J O’Connor. CORK: M Martin; K O’Donovan (0-1), M Shanley, K Flahive; J Cooper, R Maguire, M Taylor; I Maguire, C O’Callaghan; D Dineen, S Powter, J O’Rourke; S Sherlock (0-6, 5f), B Hurley, C O’Mahony (03). We got out of here with a decent result, but knowing that we had plenty of rust in that performance and we have to improve. Hopefully the game will bring us on. O’Connor said Kerry will have to be better if they are to reach their goal

It’s a great luxury to be able to bring in experienced men. David Moran in particular settled us down around the middle of the field and gave us a great base. O’Connor hailed the impact of Kerry’s subs

ALL SMILES: Kerry boss Jack O'Connor speaks to journalists after Saturday's match. Photo: Adam Moynihan.

With all the controversy over the game being played here, they had no option but to battle, and they did that. Fair play to them. They gave us a great battle for 50 minutes. The Kerry manager praised Cork for their efforts

Happy enough in hindsight. It was the right thing to do, to come up here and play the game. It was a nice occasion. I enjoyed it. The Dromid native said that Kerry were right to switch the game to Cork

We like playing in Killarney. The Kerry people like watching games in Killarney. I’m really looking forward to that and so are the players. A home Munster final against Limerick or Tipp awaits on May 28

13.05.2022

BATTLE: Graham O'Sullivan of Kerry is tackled by Maurice Shanley of Cork during Saturday's Munster semi-final at Páirc Uí Rinn. Photo: Stephen McCarthy/Sportsfile.

The potential is there Eamonn Fitzgerald says this Kerry side have the makings of an All-Ireland-winning team As expected, Cork rose their game for the Munster semi-final versus Kerry at sunsplashed Páirc Uí Rinn on Saturday last. However, once they had given it their all and were just one point adrift, Kerry cantered home on the long finishing straight to win by 12. The Munster final will be played at the Fitzgerald Stadium on Saturday afternoon, May 28. That venue and fixture stands irrespective of whichever team wins in the Tipperary v Limerick semi-final. Did Cork play above themselves, or did they expose some frailties on a Kerry team that is the bookies’ favourite to win the All-Ireland title? Jack O’Connor said in his post-match interview that the Kerry display was “sloppy”. Why? Quite simply the unrated Cork team put it up to Kerry and that is the way it will always be in games between these great neighbouring rivals.

PÁIRC UÍ RINN

I pointed out when the controversy about Páirc Uí Rinn got the media mileage that if I had been in Keith Ricken’s shoes I would have taken the same stance. Cork were so poor in the league that they were almost relegated to Division 3 and he didn’t want another trouncing on a big pitch. Keith had to step aside temporarily due

to health reasons, and we wish him well in his recovery, but Cork had a readymade stand-in manager in John Cleary. The Castlehaven man has been a very successful coach at underage levels and also with the Cork ladies. Why did he not get the top job over the years when Cork needed him? When he was interviewed for the football management post he said that dual players could not operate at the highest levels and produce the goods. That was not the answer the Cork County Board wanted to hear, so they appointed Cuthbert.

UNDER PRESSURE

When you don’t have top class players available, Jack Charlton’s mantra of putting them under pressure works well - up to a point. Cleary’s tactic was simple, but effective. Crowd out the Kerry offensive stars and start with David Clifford. Kevin Flahive did a great marking job on Kerry’s brightest star, confining him to one point from play. He did score three more points from frees. The Fossa man got the only real goal chance near the end, one that he normally would put away, but reserve keeper Dylan Foley made a greatsave. Regular goalkeeper Micheál Óg Martin suffered a groin injury in the 24th minute. Flahive did not resort to fouling and it

was Clifford who got the yellow card for a mistimed tackle. That must worry the Kerry management. David Clifford has been issued with several yellow cards. Woe be the day he gets two yellows, or a straight red. I was pretty sure that Cleary would drive Cork on taking the initiative, stopping Kerry building their interlinking, fast-passing strategy, by foot or by hand. That would be par for the planning for lowly Cork against the kingpins. What surprised me was the accuracy of the Cork forwards. Never known for kicking points from all angles, this team surprised everyone. Of particular note was the performance of debutant Cathail O’Mahony, who kicked three wonderful points. Place kicker Steven Sherlock was very consistent, pointing five frees and one other point from play. Apart from Flahive, Cork’s most valuable player was the versatile, play-anywhere Seán Powter. Nominally lining out at centre-forward, he performed the sweeper’s role to great effect and stymied many a Kerry attack. The Douglas player did a mighty job sacrificing his attacking duties to upset the Kerry forwards. He is very prone to injury and it was no surprise that he was replaced in the 59th minute.

POSITIVES

There were positives for Jack O’Connor. The sheer reliability of free-taker Seán O’Shea kept the Kerry scoreboard tick-

ing over nicely throughout. His kicking was excellent yielding nine points and one more from play, heralding his return to play after a long layoff. 10 points is a match-winning contribution. Jack will be happy with that. Stephen O’Brien also motored well, but Adrian Spillane never got going. Normally that wing forward position would go to Dara Moynihan but he was unavailable due to a quad injury. Kerry were pushed all the way for 50 minutes by an eager, underrated and experimental Cork team. The visitors were always going to win and the dividend is that the Kerry boss has plenty to work on over the next two weeks. When Cork collapsed on the 50th minute, the power of Kerry’s dominance augurs well for the future. The defence was adequate, but a step-up will be needed against tougher opposition. Sean O’Shea was invaluable as a free-taker and my choice for Kerry’s MVP. That accolade went to Diarmuid O’Connor, who came good at last, but not for the first time his clubmate from Na Gaeil, Jack Barry, contributed very little. Bringing on three experienced subs worked a dream. David Moran, Paul Murphy and Paul Geaney lifted the team’s performance. Micheál Burns also did well. They may not start in two weeks’ time but they will enter the fray at different stages.

She was only 14 years old and while her Irish teammates flew out on their trip of a lifetime, Leah McMahon tested positive on the mandatory test and had to stay at home in Coolcaslough. That coveted Irish singlet and all the other gear that a young sports-mad lady would want for lay neatly folded on the chair. What might have been? Last weekend she gained her first cap by playing for Ireland in Dundee in the 4 Nations tournament. Coach Andy Gill cut the squad further from 16 to 12 for each of the games. Players played against two other countries. Leah grabbed her opportunity in Scotland and played a starring role as Ireland defeated both Scotland and England.

FIGHTBACK

Leah fought her way back onto the Irish U16 ladies basketball squad. Some weeks ago I attended the Irish squad training weekend in Killarney under their English coach Andy Gill, who travels from the UK for these weekend sessions. The coaching sessions and the games were very demanding; one wondered would Leah make the cut when the Irish squad would be reduced from 32 to 16. Her determination to do that shone through and despite the opposition she got what she deserved. Leah was named on Squad 1 to play Eng-

land at 11am on Saturday last and again to play Wales on Saturday at 4pm. Not alone is Leah skilful in basketball, football, soccer and just about any other sport, she also has the drive and determination that is the sine qua non for anyone who wants to succeed at a high level in any sport. She also plays soccer with Killarney Celtic. She plays basketball with St Paul’s and with St Brigid’s her school. She plays football for several Dr Crokes teams and is a highly valued coach for the younger girls at the Saturday academy. She is a standout player with the Kerry underage development squads and was on the losing Kerry sides that were defeated by Cork in the U14 and U16 Munster finals. Killarney has produced many international basketball players and Leah McMahon is now forging ahead for a very promising future in that coveted Irish singlet. For inspiration from former Killarney basketball internationals she need look no further than her Cork-based uncle, Aidan Bomber O’Shea. He was also capped for Ireland underage and seemed destined to star with the Kerry football teams of the 1980s, until a serious shoulder injury brought his playing career to a premature end.

SARAJEVO

What next for Leah McMahon? Last weekend’s tournament was preparation for the young woman ahead of the FIBA U16 European Championships, which will take place in Sarajevo, Bosnia from August 19-27. In the meantime it is back to study for her Junior Cert exams at St Brigid’s next month. No doubt we will be hearing much more from Leah in a variety of sports. Best of luck to this ever-smiling star of the future.

Declan O’Sullivan, the Kerry boss and a likely contender in the future for the senior role, will be very disappointed with this narrow defeat to Tyrone (1-14 to 1-12). Tyrone now oppose Kildare, the favourites, in the final. After a morale-boosting Munster tile win over Cork in Tralee, there were high hopes for a Kerry breakthrough this year, but it failed to transpire. No man wins a match on his own, but young Ruairí Canavan was the one Tyrone player who crucified Kerry. Not just once but eight times he raised the white flag. Three frees, one mark and four points from play. He was magnificent and it was obvious from the early stages that he was the one man who would score consistently. The genes are good of course, but he has skill, artistry, a penchant for shooting between the posts and clinical finishing. The game was free-flowing and entertaining, unlike the first half in Tralee. Players moved with abandon and it was pleasant to watch.

Kerry were in good shape, particularly after Dylan Geaney’s goal. They played with the aid of a strong wind in the first half and were four points clear early in the second half, but Tyrone were bound to come good. They brought it back to level in the 58th minute. Which team was going to blink first? You need luck, especially in a tight game, and it was Tyrone’s turn. Canavan kicked a free and it seemed to be going wide but it came off the upright. Gavin Potter reacted quickest, passing to Ciarán Bogue who slid it under the body of the Kerry goalkeeper Devon Burns. In fairness to the Kerry keeper, he was very unlucky not to block down the shot. That was the first time Tyrone led. In fairness to Kerry they launched several attacks, but time was not favourable. Tyrone’s big full forward Michael McGleenan also caused panic in front of the Kerry goal. Kerry’s best forwards were Geaney (14) and Kevin Goulding (0-4).

Ladies too good for Tipperary in Páirc Uí Rinn The Kerry ladies are safely through to the final of the Munster Football Championship following a 10-point victory over Tipperary in Páirc Uí Rinn (2-12 to 0-8).

MUNSTER: The Killarney Celtic team who were defeated by Fairview in the semi-final of the Munster Junior Cup.

Celts turn attention to league after Munster exit Killarney Celtic’s Munster Junior Cup dream came to an end on Sunday last as the Kerry kingpins fell to a narrow 1-0 defeat to Fairview Rangers in Limerick. The Hoops pushed Fairview all the way in the semi-final with talismanic striker Stephen McCarthy going close on more than one occasion. Unfortunately for Celtic, a well-worked Shane Duggan goal in the 75th minute proved decisive. Brian Spillane and his charges will now turn their attention to domestic matters. The reigning champions are guaranteed a spot in the league final and they will

face one of Killarney Athletic, Listowel Celtic, Camp United, Tralee Dynamos or Castleisland in that decider. In a remarkably stacked Premier A table, just two points separate Athletic in second and Dynamos in fifth, with Castleisland three points further back with two games in hand. Athletic, Listowel, Camp and Dynamos have just one game to play. The league leaders are at home to Listowel this weekend at with already-relegated Killorglin playing host to Castleisland in the division's only other fixture. Both games will be played on Sunday at 11am.

Darragh Long and Declan Quill’s side were comfortable from the outset and by the time Erica McGlynn had tucked away her first goal of the day in the ninth minute, the Division 2 champions led by six (1-3 to 0-0). McGlynn’s second goal helped The Kingdom to a nine-point half-time lead and with Niamh Ní Conchúir tagging on the

points, a comeback never seemed likely. The fact that Kerry failed to double down on their healthy advantage in the second half might be the only complaint one could level at them. They got the result they desired, though, and they were fully deserving of the rousing ovation they received from the travelling Kerry supporters when they took their place in the stand for the men’s match that followed. Kerry now await the winners of the other semi-final, Cork v Waterford), which will take place this Sunday at 2pm at Fraher Field, Dungarvan.

Duggan and Conway set for Carlow Rally Rally of the Lakes National winners Rob Duggan and Ger Conway have placed an entry for Sunday’s Carlow Rally. Included in the rally is the popular Ford Escort Mk2 challenge. While Duggan would love to add the prestigious Mk2

trophy to his growing collection that is not the main purpose of this entry. “I would like to give the engine a run before Donegal and get another day’s racing under my belt,” said Duggan. “It would be nice to get [the Mk2 trophy] but not easy either. Carlow is more about just making

sure our issues are sorted.” They were lucky to make the end of the Rally of the Lakes after their Escort suffered a range of problems including a leaking head gasket, a clutch problem and a faulty starter motor. Rally of the Lakes winning co-driver Noel

O’Sullivan is not competing on Sunday. He is listed to co-drive for third seed Darren Gass in a Citroen C3. The second round of the British Rally Championship, the Jim Clark Rally, is scheduled for the end of May. O’Sullivan is committed to that championship alongside Welsh driver Osian Pryce and is scaling back other commitments “to get some rest.”

SPORT NOTES

Killarney Athletic U13 PREMIER: Our young blues made the journey to Killorglin this morning for our final game of the Premier Division. On a beautiful may morning, our boys got off to the worst start and conceded 2 early goals in the first 10 minutes. To their credit they fought their way back into the game and had two excellent one on one chances that we just squeezed past the post. HT 2-0. The second began with Athletic pushing for a way back into the game however we conceded a third through the penalty spot and a fourth followed soon after. Again the heads never dropped and we got the minimum our efforts deserved when an excellent move involving six different played ended with David O’Donoghue slotting home for a consolation goal. The score line did not reflect the game in the whole however, that does not take anything away from the Killorglin side that ran out 4-1 winners. U12 CUP: Killarney Athletic 4 Inter Kenmare 0. Our young blues bounced back from the disappointment of Thursday night in style in Woodlawn. Athletic started strong and in the first half played some our best football of the season with Enna Hennigan and Sean Lyne putting us into a two goal lead. Athletic had to withstand some Kenmare pressure at the start of second half but pushed on again and extended their advantage with two more from Hennigan to complete his hat-trick. RESULTS: U12 Premier - Killarney Athletic 0 St Brendan’s Park 1. Premier A - Killarney Athletic 3 Classic FC 0 (Matthew Horgan 3). Throw in at Con Keating Park is 2pm. The Senior B Team made the trip on Wednesday May 4 to Milltown for Round 5 of the Division 6A County League which resulted in a victory for the home side on a scoreline of Milltown /Castlemaine 2-12 Killarney Legion 0-11. They travel to Tuosist this weekend in Round 6. JUVENILE BOYS: The U13 Boys had a double date with Dr Crokes during the week in Lewis Road. On Friday evening the White Team won out on a scoreline of 5-15 to 3-7. Having won all four games in their Division and using 27 players in the process the likelihood is the team will be moved up a grade or two for phase 2 of the competition. The Green team were in action on Sunday evening and a fine first half showing laid the foundation for another impressive win for the lads. They struck for three goals in that period while their defending was top notch limiting the Crokes to just four points. The team went through Phase 1 of the County League unbeaten in Division 1 and now await Phase 2 where they will be joined by other teams that will be regraded. The U15 Boys White Team lost out to Laune Rangers B in the County League semi final played in Direen last Wednesday evening. After a very even first half they only trailed by 1 point., 2-7 to 2-6. However Laune Rangers rang the changes at half time and put in a strong second half running out winners, 6-12 to 2-8.This competition served a great purpose as it ensured every member of the U15 panel got valuable playing time and the lads will be all the better for it.

Dr Crokes GAA SHL Div. 1: Dr Crokes 0-15 Ballyduff 0-12. Dr Crokes Senior Hurlers had a well deserved victory over Ballyduff to register their first points of the season in the County Senior Hurling League on Sunday last. With home advantage, Dr Crokes started brightly and gave early indication that they were up for this game. A brace of points from frees by Michael Lenihan was followed by excellent points from play by David Carroll and midfielder Anthony Keogh. Ballyduff responded and kept the score line ticking over to ensure a close game with both sides guilty of some bad wides. Michael Lenihan converted 2 more frees before half-time to leave the scores level at 0-06 each. Ballyduff gained some momentum early in the second half to take a 3 point lead and it looked as if the game could be sliding away from Crokes. However, Dr Crokes, who have been learning that life is tough going in the top tier this season, dug deep and responded well to stay in the game. Some excellent scores from both midfielders Jack Lenihan & Anthony Keogh rallied the troops and Crokes all of a sudden were back on level terms. Our backs began to take control, our mid-fielders were working hard and covering great ground and our forwards gradually began to find gaps in the Ballyduff defence. A great goal chance was created and full forward Colm O'Cuiv was denied by a brilliant save by the Ballyduff keeper but Crokes kept up the pressure. Dr Crokes had a brilliant last quarter hitting 7 points from play, 3 from Michael Lenihan, 2 from Anthony Keogh, 1 each from Jack Lenihan and David Carroll to ensure Crokes stayed ahead for a memorable win. This win was well deserved and a reward for all the hard work being done by Aidan O'Mahony, Strength & Conditioning Coach and Hurling Coach and Kerry Senior Hurler, Conor Bohane.

DIVISION 6A: Milltown/Castlemaine 'B' 2-12 Killarney Legion 'B' 0-11. A good win for our Senior 'B' side last Wednesday evening when they hosted Killarney Legion at the Paddy Burke Memorial Park which makes it five wins from five games in Division 6A. On what was a lovely evening for a game, second half goals from Jono O'Connor and Jonathan O'Sullivan proved to be decisive as we ran out seven point winners in the end of a hard fought encounter. The opening half had many tight exchanges with some great scores at either end from distance, Brendan Casey leading the charge for us up front ably assisted by Donal Kelliher, Liam Roche, John Dennehy, Jonathan O'Sullivan and Jono O'Connor in the forwards department. There was also some strong midfield and defensive performances to keep the away side at bay in the goal scoring stakes. Well done to the players and management.
