Bringing Hollywood Magic to Killarney A MOVIE SHOOT is always a magnet for spectators. When camera crews and garda vehicles converged on Killarney Courthouse last Friday and Saturday it created ripples of excitement. A determined few onlookers would sidle up, eyes fixed on the action, asking out of the corner of the mouth, is there someone famous in town? The answer was yes. OC Productions are filming their latest movie, Tradition, in town and director Damian O’Callaghan told us: “We’re bringing a little bit of Hollywood to Killarney.” The feature film centres on a judge, a referee and a controversial match decision. Permission was granted by the Courts Service to shoot some of the film at the courthouse. Damian’s last film, The Gift, was
hugely successful and has been taken up by a major distribution company in the United States. Comedian Brendan Grace, who appeared in The Gift, and broadcaster Marty Morrissey were among the well-known faces at the heart of the
action this week with local grandparents, parents and tiny tots alike lining out to be extras in Tradition. While Damian’s previous film tackled serious, emotionally charged topics, Tradition is a comedy. It is hoped the movie will be released next year, possibly at the Galway Film Festival, and itis absolutely fantastic to see the creativity and excitement the movie is already generating on the streets of our town. “This film could only have been made in Killarney,” said Damian. “Why would we go anywhere else? It’s an amazing town so why not, let’s bring Hollywood to Killarney.”

Well Done, Colm Cooper GOOD on Colm Cooper for breaking new ground for the GAA and boosting the coffers of deserving causes through his testimonial dinner later this month. Two charities will benefit from a proportion of the proceeds: the Kerry Cancer Support Group and Our Lady’s Hospital for Sick Children in Dublin as well as Kerry GAA and Colm’s club Dr Crokes. The Kerry and Dr Crokes legend will host the event at the Intercontinental Hotel in Ballsbridge on October 27 and over half of the money raised will go to charity, ensuring the popular 34-year-old sports star will make a significant difference to his community.
Lights, Camera & Action
KILLARNEY and Kerry have always played pioneering roles in cinema. The Dawn, a remarkable feature film written and directed by Killarney man Tom Cooper in 1936, was the first indigenous sound production made in Ireland. Of course, Killarney is also the hometown of none other than A-lister Michael Fassbender. Michael, like OC Productions’ Damian O’Callaghan, is an alumnus of the Bricriu drama group which was established years ago by another acclaimed Killarney thespian Donal Courtney. Meanwhile, the county has been pivotal to successful movies, from Ryan’s Daughter in 1970 to the Tom Cruise/ Nicole Kidman feature Far and Away in 1992.

WHEN we shared the experience over the past week of workers in Killarney whose cars were damaged after parking in a town-centre area, it provoked an outraged response. And within minutes of broadcasting our interview with Maura O’Boyle on our website yesterday, other New Street workers who have been affected arrived into the Killarney Advertiser office keen to share their experiences and dismay. All have been using the St Mary’s Road/St Mary’s Terrace area to park their cars during the day. They have returned to find their cars keyed, or in some cases, dog waste smeared over car door handles. Maura told us how she faces a bill of €1000 to repair damage caused to her car, which has been repeatedly van-
dalised after she parked it in St Mary’s Terrace/St Mary’s Road. Adrien King and Fred McDonogh of Red Chair Recruitment told us their vehicles have also been targeted. “I actually sold my car because of the extent of the damage,” said Fred. Meanwhile, Adrien was left facing a bill of €1,500 because of damage caused to the mirror, bonnet and sides of his Mercedes in recent weeks. “I have since seen a very deep scratch on another car parked there,” he said. Again, it begs the question – if this is a designated parking area (and there are parking metres there) and cars are repeatedly damaged, should there be CCTV cameras there?
“Looks like we weren’t the only ones subject to vandalism parking down here!” “Disgraceful!” “What a joke. People have no respect.” “That’s terrible. Hope whoever doing this is caught.”
Gary Barlow To Hit All The Right Notes EXCITEMENT reached fever pitch in Killarney (and in our office, of course) when Gary Barlow announced yesterday that he would be taking centre stage in Killarney next year. The acclaimed singer-songwriter will be embarking on a solo tour of the UK and Ireland from April 2018 and will play 33 dates in 24 intimate venues, including the INEC on Saturday, May 12. Tickets go on sale at 10am on Friday, October 20, via www.inec.ie www.gigsandtours.com www.ticketmaster.ie The last time Gary played a string of venues this size, demand was so high he could have sold certain venues out six
times over! “I had such a lot of fun back in 2013 when I played those smaller venues because you’re so much closer to the fans,” said Gary of his forthcoming tour. “The audience always seem to love the intimacy of it all too. I’m also really looking forward to playing in a couple of cities I’ve never played before as well as getting a chance to meet the fans there.” Gary last toured as a solo artist in 2014 to acclaim from fans and critics alike, playing some of the biggest venues he had ever played as a solo artist including the O2 London, Birmingham LG Arena, Glasgow The SSE Hydro and Manchester Arena.

IT’S been hailed as the best-ever in the event’s 28-year history and the Fossa Fashion Extravaganza’s success was due in no small part to two GAA stars turned catwalk models. Dedicated followers of fashion converged on the

Kerry Restaurants Named In TripAdvisor Top Ten THREE major jobs were being carried out while the N22 road was closed from Glenflesk to Lissivigeen during the week. These included improvement at the Minish level crossing where there has been some subsidence over the years, with Irish Rail and Kerry County Council upgrading the crossing. Repairs were also being carried out to a “dip” in the area near the Kerry Way bar by installing a concrete foundation beneath the road at this location which has seen subsidence on occasion in recent years Finally, the surface at a bend at Rusheenbeg near Glenflesk was being upgraded. “It was decided to carry out all three repairs during the one road closure to minimise disruption for motorists,” said Owen O’Shea of Kerry County Council. Meanwhile, Iarnród Éireann had organised bus The Minish level crossing. Taking A Bow Awards Ceremony
THE QQI Awards Certification Ceremony held in Killarney Community College on Friday last was a resounding success, with over 100 students achieving certification. The QQI Awards were presented to both day and night students of the college. The day students graduated in Office Administration, a fulltime Level 5/6 one-year course. Night course award recipients had studied Occupational First Aid; Manual and Computerised Accounts; Special Needs Assisting and Healthcare Support. John Keane, director of adult education in Killarney Community College, congratulated all the recipients and commended them for their commitment and endeavour. Tom Looney, former director of adult education at the college, presented the awards on the night.

THREE Kerry restaurants have been named in TripAdvisor’s top ten Irish restaurants. The Chart House in Dingle made number three on the list, while Michael and Geraldine Rosney’s Rozzers Restaurant at Killeen House, Aghadoe, Killarney, is number seven on the list and Mike Casey’s The Lime Tree in Kenmare makes the list at number eight.
Truck Overturns TRAFFIC-CALMING measures were implemented as a result of an incident that took place on the road between Glenflesk and Barraduff yesterday evening. Road users were urged to take care following an incident in which a truck overturned on the route, which was reduced to one lane. Traffic on this road has dramatically increased this week as a result of the works being carried out at the level crossing at Minish, on the main Killarney-Cork road.

All Creatures Great & Small Pics: Eamonn Keogh
IN KEEPING with the ethos of St Francis, Killarney opened its heart to all creatures great and small on Sunday for the saint’s annual feast day. The Franciscan Friary was a flurry of activity as the faithful – including many four-legged friends – flocked to the annual blessing of the animals at 3.30pm outside the church.

AWARD-WINNING photographer and documentary maker Killarney native Julien Behal has dedicated his latest project to the memory of his brother, the late Daire Behal who died in 2013. Titled “The Rehab” Julien’s threepart series starts on TV3 this Monday, at 9pm and offers a character-led, multi-layered journey into the life and workings of one of Ireland’s most successful rehabilitation centres, Coolmine Therapeutic Community. Featuring a diverse cast of characters, the series follows them as they make their way through the unique therapy programmes the centre offers and beyond into their lives outside when they finish treatment. “It was filmed over a period of a year, with unprecedented access to staff and residents,” added Julien. “This intimate and visceral series follows several people from the beginning to the end of their treatment, Columb, Sha-
ron, Mark (pictured), Tobias, Sandra and Carolyn. As they learn to live without drugs, they have to come to terms with the past; what has brought them here and what impact their addiction has had on their families.” Coolmine is unique in Ireland in that it is run as a therapeutic community. “The TC is primarily a self-help approach in which residents are responsible for their own recovery with peers and staff acting as facilitators of change,” said Julien.

BUDGET CHANGES
STAMP DUTY
There is no change to the headline rate for Residential Property of 1% Stamp Duty. However there is a significant change in respect of Non Residential Properties. The rate has been increased from 2% to 6%. The new rate takes effect for conveyances or transfers of such property that are executed or on after the 11th of October 2017. Stamp duty is payable by the purchaser. There will be transitional arrangements however put in place in cases where signed Contracts have been executed prior to the enactment of the budget. These details would be included in the finance bill. There will be a Stamp Duty refund scheme introduced in relation to commercial and purchase for the development of housing. Developers will be required to have commenced the relevant development within thirty months of the land purchase to qualify for the refund. Consanguinity rate of Stamp Duty which was due to expire on the 31st of December 2017 and this has been extended for another three years. Conveyances or transfers of agricultural property between certain blood relatives subject to certain conditions on or after the 11th of
October 2017 will be changed at 1% of the consideration instead of being set at half the rate of Stamp Duty that applies to non-residential property.
CAPITAL GAINS TAX An amendment will be made to Section 604 A of the Taxes Consolidation Act, 1997, which relates to the CGT release of gains in respect of lands and buildings that are held for a minimum period of 7 years. This amendment will provide the gains in respect of land or buildings that were acquired between the 7th of December 2011 and 31st of December 2014 will be exempt from CGT if they are sold after 4 years and within 7 years from the date they were acquired. It is important to note that the final terms and conditions of the above amendments will be contained within the finance bill when published. Future Sounds: Artist Profile AS EXCITEMENT builds ahead of Future Sounds at the INEC Acoustic Club on October 29, we profile the first act on one big stage, Dublin-born London-based Sample Answer. Since starting out in 2013, the now 22-year-old artist has been showcasing his eclectic music style, moving his sound from alt-J/ Jamie T through to Ed Sheeran’s pop, rap and romantic prowess. Blending elements of hip-hop, rap and blues with his distinctive acoustic guitar sound and powerful vocals, Sample Answer’s songs hit home with the intelligence of his lyrics. His debut EP was recorded by Hugh Fothergill at The Dairy Studio’s in Brixton and the EP’s lead single “Good Boy” is a testament to his talent as a songwriter to cross genres and is a statement of intent from an artist already established on the London music scene.
Sample Answer has recently settled in London since leaving hometown Dublin, but he’s been hard at work writing and recording his debut EP, the four-track “Good Boy”, out now across all formats. Combining diverse influences ranging from The Beatles and Bob Dylan to Jay-Z and Tyler The Creator the twenty-two-yearold virtuoso melds hip-hop, classic pop song writing and authentic urban storytelling with unique flair on this debut. He has followed this up with another interesting collection titled Textile Baby. Future Sounds Spotlight aims to take fans on a journey starting at stripped down rhythms of Sample Answer and building through the atmospheric instruments of Overhead The Albatross before dancing through the original electronic creations of Daithi and Kormac into the early hours of the morning at The Acoustic Club.

Killarney Man’s Company Primed For International Growth
ITS mission is to make it easy to book every campsite globally and now Campsited.com is about to scale new heights internationally. Campsited.com was founded by Killarney native Finán O’Donoghue, who said: “2017 has been great year for us. Google and the Business Post voted us one of the top early stage companies in the country. We’re on track to grow bookings by 700%. And a partnership providing access to 4,000 new campsites, enables massive growth into the future.” The size of the opportunity for Campsited is huge. People will spend one billion nights on campsites annually by 2020. Three hundred million of these nights will be booked through websites like Campsited. With no household name today in campsite bookings, like Airbnb and booking.com for their respective markets, Campsited can become just that. “Working with the right investment part-
ners is key to this,” said Finán. “We also want anyone who is keen on the idea to be part of our success. This is possible through the Revenue’s Employment Investment and Incentive (EII) scheme.” EII is a tax relief incentive scheme. It allows people obtain income tax relief on an investment in qualifying companies, like Campsited, up to a maximum of €150,000 per annum. So, depending on what tax bracket you are in, you could get up to 40% of your investment back from the Revenue. While also getting shares in Campsited to the value of 100% of your investment. Not a bad deal. “We’re getting close to our funding target and expect the last few investment slots to fill up fast,” said O’Donoghue. If you would like to know more, check out the company’s fundraising page at www. investment.campsited.com, where you can register your interest. Alternatively, you can contact Finán directly on 064-664 6029.

‘We Have Different Priorities Now’: Nadine Coyle Sheds Light On Why Girls Aloud Drifted Apart
Miley Cyrus Joins James Corden In The Latest Carpool Karaoke
There aren’t many pictures of Miley Cyrus in her rocky rebellion phase when she wasn’t wagging her pointy tongue. But James Corden hilariously found a use for her famous habit during the musician’s suitably wacky Carpool Karaoke stint, asking her to lick a few of his postage stamps. Besides showing off her flawless vocal talents, the 24-year-old shows The Late Late Show host how long her tongue is in the humorous preview clip, ahead of Wednesday’s show. ‘Your tongue makes less of an appearance today, than it used to,’ James enquires, before the blonde proudly sticks it out through striking red lips. ‘That is a long tongue...’ he exclaims, before suggesting: ‘Keep it there,’ and pulling out a menial postage task for her to assist with. The former child star then breaks into her famous hit Party In The USA, complete with harmonic melodies.
She has to deal with questions about the much-talked about Girls Aloud rift whenever she’s interviewed. Nadine Coyle’s appearance on Tuesday morning’s edition of Lorraine was no different as she promoted her new single Go To Work and reflected on her pop star beginnings. ‘Girls Aloud was 15 years ago – it’s crazy,’ she said. ‘I was such a child. But everybody grows up and moves on and has different priorities.’ Lorraine asked her whether or not she thinks the former Pop Stars: The Rivals group could ever reunite - or at least be civil and break bread together one day. ‘I’m sure we could have dinner together one day, yes,’ Nadine assured, ever cheerful. Nadine performed her new single on the show, live.

A Weekly Round-Up Of News + Views From Kerry And Around
Lucky Escape At Ladies View A COUPLE from Taiwan had a lucky escape last Friday as their car almost plunged off Ladies View. The incident occurred at about 1pm after the couple – who are believed to be in their 20s – had planned to park their car at the popular scenic spot with views of Killarney National Park. But instead of hitting the brake, it appears the driver of the car hit the accelerator instead. The rented black Renault drove over the edge of a cliff but came to

a halt when it hit a rock on the other side. Staff from the Ladies View café came to the couple’s aid and helped them out of the car and fortunately neither was injured. Speaking on Radio Kerry, the owner of Ladies View café, Raymond O’Shea, aid: “They didn’t get very far, they could have gone a lot further down. They were stopped by a rock on the other side of the road so they got out of the car uninjured, thankfull, which was great.”

High Levels Of Radon Gas at Killarney Mental Health Facility HIGH levels of potentially fatal gas were found at a new mental health facility in Killarney just three months after it opened. Radon gas barriers were breached in the €13.5m state-of-the-art Deer Lodge, the HSE confirmed. However, it did not disclose the levels of the radioactive gas detected during what it said was a standard three-month monitoring the residential facility. The head of mental health in Cork Kerry Community HealthCare, Sinead Glennon told the Psychiatric Nurses Association (PNA) that while a radon barrier
was fitted, the results of the studies “showed a number of areas within the building have radon levels greater than 200 Bq/m3 which is the reference level for radon in residential facilities”. There was no immediate danger to staff or residents, she said. The company, who completed the radon survey, advised on necessary remediation works which involve fitting extract fans at high levels “in nine external locations” around the building, Ms Glennon said. The PNA is demanding to know the exact levels detected. “Radon is a naturally occurring radioactive gas that
Trump Corner Trump Threatens Broadcaster NBC After Nuclear Report THIS week US President Donald Trump raised the prospect of challenging media licences for NBC News and other news networks after unfavourable reports. He took aim at NBC, which made him a star on The Apprentice, after it reported he wanted to boost America’s nuclear arsenal almost tenfold. Mr Trump labelled the report “fake news” and “pure fiction”. NBC also angered the White House last week when it said the secretary of state had called Mr Trump “a moron”. The US president tweeted on Wednesday: “Fake @NBCNews made up a story that I wanted a ‘tenfold’ increase in our US nuclear arsenal. Pure fiction, made up to demean. NBC = CNN!”
Never fails to entertain
In a follow-up tweet, he said: “With all of the Fake News coming out of NBC and the Networks, at what point is it appropriate to challenge their License? Bad for country!” Walter Shaub, who led the US Office of Government Ethics under President Barack Obama, responded on Twitter: “At what point? At the point when we cease to be a democracy.” The Committee to Protect Journalists also slammed the US president’s tweet, saying that it serves as a poor example for other world leaders. According to NBC News, Mr Trump told a top-level meeting at the Pentagon in July that he wanted to dramatically boost the American stockpile of atomic missiles. Attributing its report to three officials in the room, NBC said Mr Trump’s request surprised those present, including the Joint Chiefs of Staff and Secretary of State Rex Tillerson.
is released from the ground and bedrock associated with limestone and is estimated to kill 200 people in Ireland each year as a result of its inhalation the gas and causing lung cancer,” said PNA spokesman Cormac Williams. “It carries the same danger level as asbestos and cigarette smoking. All new buildings are required to have a radon barrier fitted to the floor area to prevent the gas from leaking into the building. How the radon barrier failed in Deer Lodge is a question that needs to be answered.” The PNA is seeking a detailed report from the HSE.
Last Crossing For Valentia Ferry? LAST Sunday, the Valentia Island ferry ran its last service before stopping for the winter. This takes place every October but this year is different as because the 56-yearold ferry needs to be replaced, it may not come back as usual in mid-March. Funding to the tune of €3 million is needed to help purchase a new one. Locals are able to supply the first €1 million towards the price. With funding not forthcoming from government agencies, it is feared that the ferry service will not operate in the future. Speaking to TheJournal.ie, Richard Foran, who operates the Valentia Island ferry, said removing the service would be catastrophic for the local community. “We have the bridge to the mainland on the other side of the island, but the main town of the island is on the other side. Losing the ferry would force businesses there to close
down,” he said. He added: “This effectively takes us off the Ring of Kerry. Skellig Ring was named by the Lonely Planet as one of the top 10 places in the world to visit. Not having a ferry takes us out of that equation.” In a parliamentary question last December by Michael Healy-Rae, he asked if the Department of Tourism would provide funding for the new ferry. Then-junior minister in that department, Patrick O’Donovan, replied: “This is an operational matter for the Board and Management of Fáilte Ireland.” While the Department provides funding to Fáilte Ireland to invest in tourism offerings, it does not administer those capital programmes. Speaking in the Seanad, Fine Gael Senator Paul Coghlan said the matter was deserving of urgent attention. In a statement, Fáilte Ireland that Valentia Ferry’s application was “ineligible”.

Hollywood Rocked As Weinstein Accusers Share Their Stories THE British Academy of Film and Television Arts (BAFTA) has announced that it has suspended Harvey Weinstein’s membership with immediate effect following the allegations of sexual assault and harassment made against the film producer. A statement on BAFTA’s website reads: “In light of recent very serious allegations, BAFTA has informed Harvey Weinstein that his membership has been suspended, effective immediately. It stated: “We hope this announcement sends a clear message that such behaviour has absolutely no place in our industry.” Weinstein, who co-founded the Weinstein Company alongside his brother Bob in 2005, was dismissed from the studio “with immediate effect” on Sunday following reports in the US media that he sexually harassed women over several decades. Weinstein issued an apology days before his sacking after a report by The New York Times that said that the 65-year-old reached settlements with eight women who made sexual harassment claims against him. The producer said he
appreciated that the way he had behaved with colleagues in the past “has caused a lot of pain” and that he realised he “needed to be a better person”. Oscar-winning actor Leonardo DiCaprio, who worked on several films with Harvey Weinstein such as The Aviator and Gangs of New York, is one of the many stars that have weighed in on the allegations made against the movie mogul. After initially facing criticism for his silence on the issue, Ben Affleck also condemned Harvey Weinstein, the producer who helped launch his career, over the allegations. In the fast-moving story that has rocked Hollywood, Gwyneth Paltrow and Angelina Jolie also accused the film mogul of sexual harassment. Speaking to The New York Times, Paltrow said she was “petrified” when Weinstein propositioned her when she was 22 and preparing for her breakout role in an adaptation of Jane Austen’s Emma. Jolie said she rejected Weinstein’s advances during the release of Playing By Heart in 1998, and vowed never to work with the producer again.
Chloe & Brooklyn Spotted Together In Dublin
ACTRESS Chloe Grace Moretz and Brooklyn Beckham were spotted at the Aviva Stadium on Saturday for the Leinster V Munster match. Decked out in scarves they took a selfie with what looks like an Irish coffee for Chloe and a pint of Guinness for the eldest Beckham boy. Chloe (20) also shared a vid-
eo in which Beckham (18) plants a cheeky kiss on her cheek. The happy couple, who appear to have reunited following a split last year, were also spotted at the Guinness Storehouse and on a trip to a haunted house. The actress has been jetting in and out of Dublin to film scenes for Neil Jordan’s new film, The Widow.
AS 4,000 Fianna Fáil delegates gather at the RDS in Dublin tonight for the party’s Árd Fheis, the leadership faces a call to give Bertie Ahern a distinguished service award, reinforced with a renewed demand to allow him to rejoin the party, reports the Irish Independent.
Mr Ahern’s old Cumann O’Donovan Rossa in Drumcondra has written to party HQ pointing to his long and distinguished service to Fianna Fáil, which dates back to the 1965 General Election and includes leading the party into government on three successive occasions.

Bog Hole Warning A KILLARNEY couple have warned of the dangers of bog holes after their son fell into one above Strickeen Mountain. The family told The Kerryman this week of the terrifying ordeal in which the nine-year-old became submerged and had to be pulled to safety by his mother.
Opinion
The mother used her outstretched leg for the boy to grip on to before dragging him to safety. The incident occurred while they were out walking on a pathway on Strickeen which is frequented by walkers to cross the bog in a bid to reach the summit.

Michael Healy-Rae & Lucy Are TV Gold ENTERTAINMENT at its best was on the cards this week when TV presenter Lucy Kennedy got up close and personal with Kerry TD Michael Healy-Rae on a hugely popular episode of TV3’s Living With Lucy on Tuesday. A diehard fan of the Kilgarvan politician, she said: “I loved every second in his company. He was a pleasure to live with, such a laugh, so easy, so warm. I’m mad about him.” Within the first two minutes of Lucy meeting him at his office behind the family shop, Deputy Healy-Rae’s phone rang twice and during the programme there is barely a scene when it’s not ringing or he’s not taking a call. In other fascinating scenes, a large photo of Michael Healy-Rae acts as the family’s burglar alarm. “The place was broken into one time,” says Michael. “The robbers were
coming up the stairs and they saw the picture and they turned around and they left and they stopped at a certain place and they were overheard saying, ‘Oh, we broke into a flipping house but we got out of it quick’ and this person said, ‘Why?’ and he said, ‘Oh it was that crowd, do you know them politicians in Kerry – this was above in Cork they were having the conversation and they couldn’t remember the name. ‘Oh, that bastard with the cap’. Your man said, ‘Oh was it Healy Rae’s?’ ‘That’s him,’ they said. That’s the burglar alarm there [points to photo].” Another hilarious scene has him telling Lucy she’d need a power washer to remove her makeup: “You’ve been painting your face for the last 15 minutes. If you were going to combat or something with the Zulus long ago you wouldn’t be painting so much,” he says.

The Bookworm
Reviewed: Manhattan Beach By Jennifer Egan I COULDN’T wait to get my hands on this, the latest novel from the Pulitzer Prize–winning author of A Visit from the Goon Squad. Completely different from the experimental Goon Squad, but equally satisfying, it is Jennifer Egan’s first foray into historical fiction. But if you are not a fan of historical fiction, don’t be put off! It’s storytelling on an epic scale. Anna Kerrigan, nearly 12 years old, accompanies her father to visit Dexter Styles, a man who is crucial to the survival of her father and her family.
Years later, her father has disappeared and the country is at war. Anna works at the Brooklyn Naval Yard, where women are allowed to hold jobs that once belonged to men. She becomes the first female diver, repairing the ships that will help America win the war. One evening at a nightclub, she meets Dexter Styles again, and begins to understand the complexity of her father’s life. With the atmosphere of a noir thriller, this novel conjures up a world populated by gangsters, sailors, divers, bankers, and union men.

The X Factor: Six Chair Challenge TV3
Oct 14th, Sat 20:15 The dreaded Six Chair Challenge phase of the contest reaches its midway point, as the performers each take to the stage individually, in a bid to win one of the six seats on the stage - and at place in the Judges’ Houses round. However, even those performers who manage to claim a chair are not safe, as judges Simon Cowell, Louis Walsh, Sharon Osbourne and Nicole Scherzinger all retain the right to evict previously selected contestants in favour of acts that follow, and host Dermot O’Leary is on hand to console those unfortunate performers who find themselves giving up their place to another contestant.
in today’s day and age of so called “peak TV,” Trek was going to have to change too. Fortunately, it seems Discovery is up to the task, both as a successor to the Star Trek legacy and as a new TV show in its own right.

Wedding of the Week Dream Celebration For Sarah & Alan THEY describe their big day as “like a dream” and Sarah Sheehan and Alan Devane agree it was the best day of their lives. The couple exchanged wedding vows in Beaufort, where they will reside. The ceremony took place in St Michael’s Church, led by family friend Father David Gunn. Alan, from Portmagee, and Sarah, from Glencar, posed for the camera of Riona MacMonagle in the grounds of the Europe Hotel & Resort, where the groom works as a personal trainer. The bride, who is an accident and emergency nurse at University Hospital Kerry, and groom celebrated long into the night with their guests at the reception at the Killarney Oaks Hotel. Sarah’s sisters Emma and Jacqueline Sheehan and friends Mary Evans and Laura Power were bridesmaids. Alan’s friends John O’Leary and Brendan O’Sullivan and his brothers Brendan and Paul Devane also lent their support as groomsmen. The groom’s niece Emma O’Connor was flowergirl and his nephew Ryan Courtney was pageboy. The couple will have been an item for 10 years in December. “We first met, in Horan’s nightclub in Tralee, during our college days – there was no need of Tinder!” said Alan. Alan popped the question very romantically on December 28, 2014, in Hyde Park in London. “I proposed on a hired-out cart on a big wheel, like the London Eye,” said Alan. Their honeymoon took the newlyweds to Las Vegas, San Francisco, Los Angeles, Boston, Martha’s Vineyard and New York.

‘Vital Service Helps People Realise They Are Not Alone’ KILLARNEY turned out in force to support the work by SouthWest Counselling Centre on Lewis Road. The team from the centre were joined by a host of locals who brewed up support at a coffee morning on Friday hosted by Lir Cafe and supported by Monex. Lindsay Fredman, CEO, SouthWest Counselling Centre, said: “The event provided the opportunity to promote and create awareness of our service to the entire community.”
She added: “We would hope that this increased awareness of our vital service will help the general community at large realise that they are not alone in their struggle, and that a local service is available in their time of need.” Founded by the Franciscan Community in 1994, SouthWest Counselling Centre continues to provide a low-cost counselling service in a confidential and caring environment in response to the needs of the community and on-going funding is required.

Jaguar
Jaguar Land Rover Dishes Up Bespoke Suv For Jamie Oliver JUST when you thought Jamie Oliver may have taken a break from his many ventures, he churns out another ‘wicked’ idea. The celebrity chef recently took delivery of the ultimate mobile kitchen. Oliver teamed up with Jaguar Land Rover’s Special Vehicle Operations (SVO) to cook up his ultimate SUV, a Land Rover Discovery which features a toaster in the centre console and a revolving rotisserie in the front grille. The custom 4×4 also has a pasta maker, sink, fridge, transmission-controlled salt and pepper mill, an ice cream maker, custom-made aluminium sink and a deployable kitchen worktop. And let’s not forget the slow cooker

under the bonnet with a handle resembling a fluid cap and the herb garden growing in the car’s cargo area. The tasty concoction will feature in Jamie Oliver’s Food Tube show on YouTube.
RENAULT-NISSAN has leapfrogged both Volkswagen and Toyota to become the world’s largest car maker in the first half of 2017. Producing an incredible 5,268,079 vehicles, Renault-Nissan exceeded both the 5,155,600 the Volkswagen Group made and beat the 5,129,000 third-place Toyota manufactured. Commenting on the results, Renault-Nissan CEO Carlos Ghosn (pictured) announced that his car making giant would “continue to leverage our significant economies of scale and global market presence”. The boss of the Alliance, that recently swallowed up Mitsubishi, also promised that his automaker would maintain a “strong technology lineup” and would offer customers “breakthrough electric models”.

13.10.17 2ND ANNIVERSARY SPARLING
In loving memory of Patrick Sparling, late of Ballyspillane, Killarney, who passed away on 11th October 2015. When you lose someone special, The hurt is hard to hide, When it is your husband, The hurt goes deep inside, The day that we were married, They told us we were one, But they never told us what to do, When half of one is gone, What do you do with half a heart,Now the other half is not there, You were the other half of me, A life linked to my own, What do i do with half a life, Now that I am on my own. From your loving wife Noreen and family If only we could relive yesterday, Just even for a while, Just for us to sit and talk, And see you smile, You’re not just a memory, Or part of the past, Your ours to remember, AS long as life lasts. From your son Patrick.

In Awe Of Autumn
HOW beautiful is autumn? Well, that all depends on the strength of the winds that blow! As always I am enthralled by the colours of the leaves – I have two large Acer campestris, or field maples, which are resplendent in their golden cloaks. Spindle trees, or Euonymus alatus/europaeus have fuchsia coloured foliage, and the Mountain ash is crimson. Hydrangea flowers are turning burgundy and are, I think at their most attractive for cutting and drying at the moment. They dry best when put into a vase of water and left to dry naturally. It’s great to have them in now, so that you will have them dried in time for Christmas… they look great in arrangements when sprayed gold/silver or red. Another plant which is not very common, but was brought to my attention by a reader, is Berberis Julianae. It is a plant which is glowing red currently, and as was pointed out to me, an excellent choice for keeping intruders out! The thorns are at least an inch long, and the leaves are spiny also. It gets masses of pale yellow flowers in spring, and its autumn foliage is superb. As I said, an excellent hedge to keep out anything! There are two times of year which are optimum for taking hardwood cuttings – just after leaf fall, and just before the buds open in spring. Taking hardwood cuttings is a simple procedure. The piece of wood you’ll want is a stem from the current year’s growth. Cut a piece between 15-30cm long, and snip the soft tip off at an angle. Cut the bottom off just below a pair of buds and dip into rooting hormone. This is important as there will also be a fungicide in the powder, which will prevent rotting. Fill some pots with seed and cutting compost and place your cuttings about one third of their length into them. By next autumn they will be well established and ready for planting out. You can take hardwood cuttings from almost all deciduous shrubs, including rambling roses, forsythia, weigelia etc. It is also suitable for most climbers and fruit bushes. Some evergreens, such as holly can also be propagated in this way. For more detailed guidelines have a look at the RHS website.

Making The French Connection LAST Saturday morning, fortyfive transition-year and fifth-year students from St Brigid’s Presentation Secondary School, accompanied by five staff members, flew to Paris for a four-day trip. The group visited Montmartre on Saturday afternoon. After many steep and cobbled streets, they reached the Basilica of Sacre-Coeur, sampled the many different crepes on offer and took in the breath-taking views. The students then enjoyed a boat tour on the Seine on Saturday evening. On Sunday, the group visited the Louvre museum to see the infamous Mona Lisa before proceeding to the Notre-Dame Cathedral. Killarney Advertiser heard that the pigeons surrounding the Notre-Dame were a big hit with the students! The Eiffel Tower was the final stop on Sunday evening. Disneyland was the destination on Monday. The group spent their day between Walt Disney Studios and Disney’s theme park. The day concluded with the illuminations show, which marked the 25th anniversary of Disneyland Paris.

The Kerry legend was up to his old tricks last weekend, writes Adam Moynihan
County Championship Semi-Final Dr Crokes 5-13 West Kerry 0-14 A trademark moment of magic from veteran Colm Cooper was the highlight of an otherwise fairly predictable County Championship semi-final between Dr Crokes and West Kerry on Saturday. The margin of victory was wider than expected but, in truth, the outcome was never really in doubt. Three late goals exaggerated their dominance but not by much. In the end, it was another comprehensive win en route to their seventh final in nine years. Pat O’Shea’s side were typically sharp up front and it took them just nine minutes to steal in for their first goal, Daithí Casey getting on the end of Gavin O’Shea’s pass to palm the ball past West Kerry keeper Tomás Mac an tSaoir. The men from the west were certainly hampered by an injury to Tomás Ó Se in the 19th minute and when Jason Hickson saw red just before half time, manager Paul Quinn must have feared the worst. In a week that saw Gooch take to The Late Late Show to launch his new autobiography – and defend his upcoming testimonial, which has been criticised in certain quarters – it was nice to see him back out on the pitch. To be honest, he nearly deserves a testimonial for his goal on Saturday alone. With just a couple of minutes gone in the second half, the eight-time All-Star planted his quickly-taken free into the top corner to bring his tally to 1-3 and give Crokes a tenpoint cushion. Substitutes Paul Clarke and Jordan Kiely (twice) also found the target late on as West Kerry fell to a fairly humbling fourteen-point defeat. The season isn’t over yet, however, and the majority of these young players have an Intermediate final with An Ghaeltacht to look forward to. For Crokes, old foes South Kerry await in the final. Much like the quarter final against Rathmore, South Kerry started slowly against Kerins O’Rahilly’s but they came into the game in the second half with Man of the Match Bryan Sheehan characteristically influential. The South Kerry rearguard kept Rahilly’s dangermen Tommy Walsh, Barry John Keane and Jack Savage to a point from play each while at the other end, corner forward Daniel Daly chipped in with some crucial scores. His free along with an inspirational fisted effort from full back Mark Griffin opened up a two-point lead heading into additional time before Barry John Keane pulled one

back with a huge long-range effort that just dropped over the bar. Keane had an opportunity to be the hero moments later when Rahilly’s were awarded another free from the same position but he couldn’t repeat the trick and South Kerry held on for the win. It should make for an interesting decider on October 22. These two sides have been the big dogs in Kerry since the turn of the millennium with a whopping 15 final appearances and 11 titles between them. Crokes have been in incredible form and will undoubtedly be favourites but there is at least one ray of hope for William Harmon’s charges: the Black and Amber have only suffered three final defeats since 2000 and all three have come at the hands of South Kerry.

Basketball: National League Portlaoise Panthers 87 Scotts Lakers 74 IT WAS a disappointing road trip for Scotts Lakers when they were toppled by Portlaoise Panthers in St Mary’s Hall Portlaoise last Saturday night. Overall it was a quite poor team performance from the Killarney side and a disastrous third quarter contributed to their downfall. Lakers had to plan without big Padraig Lucey for this match and with Andrew Fitzgerald also absent from the first five, the Killarney side didn’t have their usual imposing presence under the boards. However Antuan Bootle was making an impression and with Cian Clernon and Mark Greene hitting big three-pointers, Lakers led 18-16 late in the first quarter. Unfortunately this was the only time in the match that Lakers enjoyed the advantage. The sides were level, 23 points each, at the end of the first quarter and the home side gradually took control to lead 42-35 at half-time. Panthers continued to dominate in the third quarter going on a 20 points to 2 run as the Lakers game plan completely fell apart. Panthers’ foreign players Mantas Vilimas and Tim Stewart were dominant on both ends of the floor and the home side enjoyed a comfortable 66-48 lead entering the final period. The game was effectively over at this stage but Lakers did have a late surge with good three-point shooting from Cian Clernon and Keith O’Grady. However the gap was too big to claw back and Portlaoise won by 13 points in the end. Cian Clernon was best for Scotts Lakers on the night hitting 24 points including four three-pointers. Other scorers for Lakers were Antuan Bootle 18, Justin Tuason 8, Andrew Fitzgerald 7, Mark Greene 5, Keith O’Grady 3, Shane Horgan 2, Billy Wiseman 2, Mihail Kapitanov 2, Niall O’Brien 2, Sean O’Neill 1. David Clifford Is Minor Star Footballer Of The Year Words: Eve Kelliher Pics: Sportsfile SHARPSHOOTING hero David Clifford was named the Electric Ireland GAA Minor Star Footballer of the Year. The Minor Star Hurler and Footballer of the Year were announced on Saturday at the inaugural Electric Ireland GAA Minor Star Awards lunch in Croke Park. Kerry’s All-Ireland Minor winning forward, David Clifford of Fossa took a bow alongside Cork Minor corner forward Brian Turnbull, who secured the Electric Ireland Minor Star Hurler of the Year award. Clifford was a key figure as Kerry secured their fourth Minor AllIreland title in four years. The Fossa clubman scored 1-10 in the semi-final win over Cavan and 4-4 as Kerry defeated Derry in the Electric Ireland GAA Minor Football Final. Brian Turnbull had an equally impressive season for Cork’s Minors. While they lost out to Galway in the All-Ireland Minor Final, Turnbull scored 1-07 in the Croke Park showpiece. The Douglas star also scored 13 points in a Man of the Match display in the semi-final win over Dublin for a total of 1-51 for the Championship season. Clifford and Turnbull were announced as part of the first Electric Ireland GAA Minor Star Awards which celebrated the Minor Footballing and Hurling Teams of the Year who were joined by their families and county managers in Croke Park. Kerry legend Jack O’Connor was also honoured with the Minor Star Special Merit Award, presented to him by Mícheál Ó Muircheartaigh, for his significant contribution to Minor football in Kerry. The inaugural awards emphasise that there is “nothing minor about playing Minor” and so honour the best individual performers from the entire season, also recognising the crucial and admirable part played by the families, clubs and communities of players which allowed them to get to this point in their sporting career.

Dr Crokes Advance To County Final Words: Eamonn Fitzgerald DR CROKES and South Kerry won their respective Kerry SFC semifinals at the Fitzgerald Stadium on Sunday last and qualified for the county final on October 22 – Dr Crokes 5-13, West Kerry 0-14. While Crokes were never in danger of losing this game three late goals hardly does justice to a gallant West Kerry side. These goals were scored by young substitutes Paul Clarke and Jordan Kiely (2) in the last few minutes of this game. West Kerry lost the influential Tomás Ó Sé with a hamstring injury after 20 minutes. Jason Hickson was given a second yellow card and a red card on the stroke of half time. They trailed by 1-9 to 0-5 at that stage and were down to 14 men for the entire second half. A goal by captain Daithí Casey put the Crokes ahead 1-2 to 0-1 after 10 minutes. West Kerry had a mountain to climb for the second half but full credit to them for refusing to give in to the champions. The defence was caught napping in the 34th minute when the quick thinking Colm Cooper snatched a cheeky goal to make it 2-9 to 0-5. Game over as a contest with a 10-point lead but West Kerry still battled bravely picking off some great points. It will be a source of some concern that West Kerry could manage 14 points especially with just 14 men playing their hearts out. They needed to
score a goal or two, but the Crokes defence blocked their paths to goal where Shane Murphy was able to handle whatever came his way. Fionn Fitzgerald was black carded in the 40th minute and he was replaced by Shane Doolan. Mike Moloney also got a black card in the 50th minute. Crokes had the luxury of emptying the bench and the last three goals came from substitutes Paul Clarke and that brace by Jordan Kiely. The result of this game was never in doubt but South Kerry will provide a much bigger obstacle on October 22.
SOUTH KERRY 0-12, K O’RAHILLY’S 1-8 South Kerry came with two late points to edge in front. Barry John Keane did well to cut that lead to a single point in injury time, but the Strand Road side could not get that equaliser. Barry John had an opportunity from far out but it did not reach its target and South Kerry were relieved. Man of the match was given to Bryan Sheehan who starred at midfield while he was uncharacteristically off target from frees and from play. He ended up with three points but he should have scored 1-10. He is one of the best dead ball kickers in the country but he was off target with four frees and three further attempts from play. He almost scored a goal in that second half but somehow Danny O’Sullivan got back to clear it off the goal line. Sheehan was a doubtful starter after limping off in the quarterfinal but he showed no ill effects in general play even if he was
wayward from frees. Tommy Walshe was listed for midfield duty but instead operated at full forward and gave Kerry player Mark Griffin enough to do until he retired in the 45th minute. Both sides found it hard to score in the opening half. K O’Rahilly’s led by a point at half time 1-3 to 0-5. In that period South Kerry had eight wides and O’Rahilly’s had two wides. Jack Savage scored the penalty in the 11th minute. The sides were level in the 45th minute and with eight minutes left Savage put the Tralee side were level once more, 1 -7 to 0-10. Daniel Daly and Mark Griffin put two points on the board for South Kerry. Barry John got one back, but time ran out as South Kerry secured a place in the final on merit.
MUNSTER CLUB FINAL Dr Crokes will represent Kerry in the Munster Club final next month, irrespective of the result in the Kerry final on October 22, as they already won the Kerry club final in that victory over Kenmare.
CHAMPIONSHIP FINAL The Garveys Supervalu Senior Football Championship Final between Dr Crokes and South Kerry will take place in Austin Stack Park on Sunday, October 22, at 3pm.

Killarney Athletic Advance To Munster Semi-Final It wasn’t a vintage performance but The Blues are safely through to the next round, writes Adam Moynihan
The Athletic team who defeated Doolan’s Cow in the Munster Champions Trophy. Back: Stuart Templeman (manager), Darren Mulcahy, Chris O’Meara, Shane Doolan, Brian O’Reilly, Brian O’Connor, Conor Farrell, Eanna Kavanagh, Cillian O’Regan and Mason Ferris. Munster Champions Trophy 1/4 Final
Killarney Athletic 3-0 Doolan’s Cow (Cork) Killarney Athletic have reached the last four of the Munster Champions Trophy following a solid 3-0 win over Doolan’s Cow on Sunday. It was a historic day for the club who earned the right to represent Kerry in this tournament following last season’s League Final triumph over Celtic. I suppose it was a fairly comfortable victory in the end but the CBSL (Cork Business and Shipping League) champions certainly gave a good account of themselves, especially in the first half when they created a few decent opportunities. The Mayfield side were a bit of an unknown quantity heading into the game but it was clear from the off that they were going to be no pushovers. They were fairly strong through the middle and their pacey right-winger gave us a few problems in the first half (by ‘us’ I mean ‘me’ specifically). We gradually eased into the game and got the crucial first goal just before the break when Jamie Doolan played a neat one-two with Seán Cournane before coolly applying the finish. We were probably slightly fitter as a team and the second half was a bit more one-sided as a result. Cournane played a lovely ball over the top to Will Courtney who doubled our advantage and Seán got in on the act himself to round off the scoring. There are some really strong teams left in the competition so regardless of who we get in the next round it’s bound to be a very tough game. We haven’t had the best of starts to the campaign so
The Mayfield side were a bit of an unknown quantity heading into the game but it was clear from the off that they were going to be no pushovers there’s a lot of work to be done over the next few weeks if we’re to have any hope of reaching a Munster Final. We haven’t been at full strength since the Cup Final in July (there were seven absentees last weekend due to football commitments) so it’s difficult to get any kind of momentum going. We’ll have to figure it out fairly quickly, though, because we have three big cup games coming up in the next month. This weekend we’re playing Fenit in the first round of the Kerry section of the Munster Junior Cup, and the week after we’re away to Castleisland in the FAI Junior Cup. We’ll then probably have a league game before facing either Janesboro, Shannon Town, St
Michael’s or Hibernians in the Champions Trophy semi-final. It’s a daunting enough schedule but, at the same time, it’s a great opportunity to build on Sunday’s win and get our season up and running. Athletic team: Brian O’Connor; Conor Farrell, Paudie O’Connor, Eanna Kavanagh, Adam Moynihan; Shane Doolan, Brian O’Reilly; Eamonn Lavin, Jamie Doolan, Will Courtney; Seán Cournane. Subs: Chris O’Meara, Cillian O’Regan, Mason Ferris, Darren Mulcahy, Brendan Kealy and Danny O’Sullivan.
Munster Junior Cup (Kerry) Fixtures: Killarney Athletic v Fenit Sunday, October 15, at 11.30am (Woodlawn) Mastergeeha v Celtic Sunday, October 15, at 2pm (Kilbrean Park) Tralee Dynamos v Tralee Celtic Sunday, October 15, at 11.30am (Cahermoneen)

Ferrari Lost Its Spark
A €59 FAULTY spark plug thwarted Ferrari’s Sebastian Vettel early in last weekend’s Japanese Grand Prix, resulting in a loss of power and ultimately retire to the pits handing Lewis Hamilton an almost undefeatable 59-point lead going into the final four races of the 2017 season. Vettel led the championship race early in the year and looked to have the advantage over Hamilton as he chased down his fifth career title, but with recent poor results has seen him almost completely drop out of contention. Vettel’s Sunday could not get much worse after engine problems all but killed off his title hopes but F1 stewards reprimanded him for missing the national anthem before the race. Vettel failed to turn up on time for the Japanese anthem, an understandable absence given the commotion around his car as mechanics hurried to try fix the sparkplug problem before the race. Sebastian Vettel’s title hopes have been all but dashed after a crash in Singapore and engine woes in Malaysia and Japan. That has helped rival Lewis Hamilton open up a 59-point advantage in the standings with four races remaining.
Rugby News ... Words: Liam Murphy A CRACKER of a match last Saturday at the Aviva as Leinster hosted rivals Munster in the first interprovincial match of the new format PRO14. With the big guns returning from the Lions, this match was always going to be an important one for both sides ahead of the start of the European campaign over the next few weeks. With Erasmus effectively changing the backline, putting JJ in as full back and Tyler Bleyendaal named at inside centre as opposed to his usual No 10.
Meeke & Nagle’s Rollercoaster Year
KRIS MEEKE and Paul Nagle claimed their second victory of the WRC season on Rally Catalunya last weekend. The Citroën crew dominated the event from early on in day one to claim the win by 28 seconds. A welcome return to form for the Irish pairing in what can only be described as a character-building season battling with an ill-performing car and a string of driver errors. Last weekend shows the potential of both crew and car on asphalt and further highlights the opportunities lost this year. Championship leader Sébastien Ogier took a step closer to a fifth world title by finishing second, and third place went
to Ott Tänak moving him ahead of the only other Championship contender, Thierry Neuville who suffered a retirement after clipping a rock and damaging the suspension and steering, a potentially terminal blow to his hopes of a maiden title. With two rounds remaining in Great Britain and Australia, the titles are now heading towards their climax. Ogier takes a 37-point lead over Tänak into Wales Rally GB with Neuville just one point further
His inconsistency from the boot has certainly helped Ian Keatley maintain the fly half position, however Keatley has been in great form and deserved the faith shown, proven when he scored a try in the bug match in the capital. CJ Stander earned his 100th cap for the men in red, however the indiscipline shown by Munster really cost them the match as Sexton proved his usual lethal self from the boot. Niall Scannell deliberately knocked on, earning him a yellow card. Leinster won by six points in the end which sees Munster slip eight points behind Glasgow in the conference. The one positive from the day was watching Keith Earls score a brace of tries in front of the 46 thousand spectators. It’s great to see Earlsie back in the red shirt and scoring tries
behind. In the Manufacturers’ Championship, second and third for M-Sport gives the British team a significant boost and it needs to claim just four points to take the win on home soil. The World Rally Championship now heads back into the forests for the autumnal Wales Rally GB, October 26-29.
– even if a third didn’t count due to a forward pass! The talking point of the game occurred after the final whistle in Reggie Corrigan’s interview with Munster Captain Peter O’Mahony. Corrigan, a former loose head prop for Leinster who has turned his hand at reporting clashed with O’Mahony after the match. Corrigan asked O’Mahony whether his team ‘gave enough’ on the pitch. O’Mahony’s terse response was “You questioning my teammates?” O’Mahony later told reporters that he took ‘huge offence’ from the question and the assertion that his team were lacking the effort. It must be remembered that Corrigan was a Leinster player and no doubt enjoyed trying to rattle the Munster man!

On The Ball Dr Crokes Club COUNTY SENIOR CHAMPIONSHIP SEMI FINAL: Dr Crokes 5-13 West Kerry 0-14. Even though we won this game by a massive fourteen points there were periods during the game when some of our football was scrappy, especially in the first twenty minutes of the second half when our opponents scored 0-6 to our 1-3 even though they had to play with fourteen men. One would have to credit our players at the same time with a good all round display over the hour. Particular mention would have to go to our bench who contributed three goals from play in the last ten minutes, two by Jordan Kiely and one from Paul Clarke. The first quarter was very evenly contested with our lads just 1-3 to 0-4 ahead even though we had the advantage of the strong wind. In the second quarter, we outscored West Kerry six points to one and this put us in the driving seat. We had a lead of 1-9 to 0-5 at the interval and they would have to face the second half a man short. It was nip and tuck for the first twenty minutes of the second half. In this period both sides put the same score on the scoreboard and it was a period when our lads did some great defending and showed why we have conceded no goals in the championship to date. Our bench took over in the last ten minutes. All six players introduced played their part, highlighted by the three goals scored by Jordan Kiely who scored two and Paul Clarke one. The final score probably flattered

Killarney Legion GAA The competitive nature of East Kerry football was there for all to see when our lads met local rivals Dr Crokes in the 1st round of the regional championship. A high quality competitive tussle ensued and in the end, it was the goal scoring prowess of Ryan O Grady and Eoghan O Sullivan that counted. The first half ended with Legion in an 8 point to 5 lead. This was due to the intelligent promptings of Niall McGillicuddy in a playmaking role and his role was complimented by the industry of Christian Casey, Cian O Leary, Tadgh Doolan and Adam Kissane in the attacking third. The second half saw the goal rush as Darragh Lyne pulled the midfield strings as the aforementioned Eoghan O Sullivan gathered 8 marks in the central third. With the goals as security the defence was not in the mood for keeping the back door open and the sextet of Dion O Neill, Kieran O Donoghue, Ian Prendergast, Evan Smyth, Peter O Sullivan and Brian Okwute were to a man superb. Debutant keeper Aaron O Sullivan gave an assured display between the sticks. Next up for the lads is another huge challenge in the shape of Rathmore in the semifinal. This is fixed for Direen on Sunday October 15th at 5pm.Final Score Killarney Legion 3-10 Dr Crokes 0-12. Niall
‘Botty’ O’C allaghan
Legendary St Paul’s announcer Niall ‘Botty’ O’Callaghan will be back in action when the Scotts Lakers play Killorglin on Saturday night. He spoke to Adam Moynihan ahead of his comeback game Well Botty. Are you looking forward to your big return on Saturday night? How long has it been? I’ve been away from the coaching side of St Paul’s for two years but the actual announcing, it’s been ten years I suppose. I did Tralee for a couple of games last year because they were stuck. But I’m looking forward to it. The crowd seem to be good craic.
As a St Paul’s man, you must be delighted to have National League basketball back in town?
Yeah, over the moon. Growing up in Killarney, the Saturday night tradition was to go to the St Paul’s games and there was always a big crowd. Killarney has a big tradition of basketball going back to the 60s so it’s great to have it back.
Is there any player in particular that you’re looking forward to seeing?
I’m looking forward to seeing Philip O’Connor and the likes of Mark Greene. They’ve come up through the house in St Paul’s and the likes of Flip there, I love seeing him playing in this league. He deserves it.
I suppose I have to ask you about the Crokes. Is there another County Championship on the way?
Who was your toughest ever opponent? The toughest guy to mark was Brian Clarke. Elbows flying left, right and centre.
If you had to transfer to another local club, who would it be?
I definitely wouldn’t leave St Paul’s or the Crokes. If I did, it would have to be somewhere far away!
What’s your proudest sporting moment?
Definitely being part of the management when we won the All-Ireland club in March, and winning that Under 19 title with the Sem.
And the most embarrassing?
There’s loads of them… This one wasn’t me but it was embarrassing for us at the time. We were playing in the Old Forge tournament in Killorglin one Sunday morning after a Crokes social and one of the lads decided not to tie his shorts. He went down on a fast break and the shorts came down, and here I am trying to pull his shorts up. We won’t mention who it was (Mr T.)
If you had to compare yourself to a professional athlete, who would it be? Charles Barkley. Small and mean.
I don’t know. There are only two teams who can win it and we’ll give it a crack. We’ve never beaten South Kerry in a final so this is a big challenge for the Crokes. You’re playing against nine clubs basically and they have very, very good players.
Do you have any superstitions? Yeah, especially the day of a game. I stay away from magpies and all that craic. I nearly crashed the car a couple of times trying to avoid magpies.
What’s your take on the whole “Colm Cooper testimonial” debate?
I have no issue with the testimonial at all. Best of luck to him. The people taking issue with it, the likes of Joe Brolly and Colm O’Rourke, they’re all getting money for going to dinner dances, they’re all getting money for writing articles. That’s on the back of their football career. I don’t understand the argument.
Agreed. A few questions about your former teammates. Who would you least like to get stuck in a lift with?
Caoimhín O’Donoghue. Shaq. There’d be no room between the two of us.
Who would have been the best at Tinder?
Vince Daly would have been the king of Tinder.
Who was the biggest moaner? Simon O’Shea.
Who was the worst-dressed? Eamonn Keogh.
What kind of stuff did he wear?
Is there an app on your phone you couldn’t live without?
The one for the soccer results. Anything else on the phone I could live without to be honest.
What’s the best show on TV?
Charles Barkley If you could go for a drink with any three sportspeople, living or dead, who would they be? Larry Fitzgerald of the Arizona Cardinals, LeBron James for the basketball and David Batty from Leeds United.
What are your five favourite sports in order?
Football, basketball, soccer, golf, and I’d watch any other sport on TV really.
Sure he’s still wearing the stuff!
Is there another sport you haven’t tried that you think you’d be good at?
Eoin Brosnan in the football. I’ve never seen a fella like him.
I would have enjoyed boxing. I did it as a kid and I enjoyed the physical side and the skills side of it as well.
Who spent the most time in the gym? If you could bring back one of your ex-teammates to line out for the Lakers this year, who would it be?
I’d bring Pat O’Shea back. He was a serious player.
Who’s the best player you’ve ever played with?
When I was a young fella we won an Under 19 National Colleges title in basketball and Aidan O’Shea was outstanding. Colman O’Shea from the Port Road was another fella. Serious footballer, serious soccer player, serious basketball player. He had everything.
Who’s the best athlete you’ve ever played with? Vince Daly. He could jump out of the hall.
What’s the best sporting moment of all time?
That’s a hard one. Seeing my two clubmen (Fionn Fitzgerald and Kieran O’Leary) lifting the Sam Maguire in 2014 was one. And from an Irish point of view, beating Germany in the soccer was a huge buzz.
Where did the nickname ‘Botty’ come from?
I was above in the Parish Hall playing basketball and I was so fat, I couldn’t get off the ground. I couldn’t even get a school uniform to fit me. Yogi called me Botty because of my big fat ass. And it stuck.
At the moment I’m watching Power. I think it’s really, really good. I like The Wire and The Shield and stuff like that as well.
What’s your favourite song? ‘Dignity’ by Deacon Blue.
There was no hesitation there. Yeah. 31 or 32 years ago it was released and it’s still number one.
What would you sing at karaoke?
Would you believe, I never sang in public until a wedding two weeks ago. I was asked to get up and sing for the craic and I sang ‘Dignity’ by Deacon Blue.
How did it go down?
It went down like a lead balloon.
Who’s the most famous person in your phone? John Egan. The Brentford player.
Who would play you in a movie about your life? John Candy because he’s fat as well.
And last one… Can you tell me a joke? What’s green, has four legs and stands in a field?
I don’t know.
A head of cabbage. I was only joking about the four legs.
Nice one, Botty!
No bother, Adam.
