BACK TO THE FUTURE: The Killarney Advertiser’s artist impression of what a multi-storey car parking facility would look like on Lewis Road, first published by this publication in December 2017.

10 years after Kerry County Council was offered Áras Phádraig by the Franciscan Order it seems there some light at the end of the tunnel - as there’s plans to approve an architect to the site. | By Sean Moriarty The popular local community centre has been idle since May 2009 when the Franciscan Community attempted to transfer ownership of the facility to the town council; however this ran into trouble as the authority is not a charity. It took until 2017 before the legal hitch could be overcome with the site now derelict and in need of considerable investment. However, this could be about to change at the next meeting of Kerry County Council which takes place in Tralee on Monday. One of the motions before the council is: The “appointment of an Architect Led Design team for the Áras Phádraig site

Architect to be appointed to Áras Phádraig site – at last! and adjoining car park”. Built in 1960 the Áras Pádraig had previously been a busy social centre used by the local community, arts and sporting groups for concerts, plays, classes and other events. In 2017, our team here at the Killarney Advertiser designed an artist’s impression for this site and we got a very positive response. In January, a feasibility study and business plan for the site in Killarney was completed following an extensive consultation and review process undertaken by the Killarney Municipal District of Kerry County Council. The report, completed by Exodea Consulting, recommends the development of a new integrated multi-purpose facility on the existing Lewis Road site. The core components of a new multi-use

facility which would replace the existing facility would include: a contemporary arts and theatre space with rehearsal, exhibition and gallery facilities, meeting rooms to be made available for a range of community uses, an educational space to accommodate the provision of train-

ing and skills courses and office space to suit the particular needs of Killarney town. A key recommendation is that any new facility should be financially self-sustaining and remain in the ownership of Kerry County Council.

ARTIST IMPRESSION: The Killarney Advertiser produced this artist’s impression of a state-of-theart Killarney Civic Plaza at the Áras and public reaction was overwhelmingly positive. The idea at the time was to tie the parking facilities in with amenities, like a theatre and a café.

Underground car parks checked after Cork fire Killarney firefighters this week conducted a fire safety assessment of 12 underground car parks in the town - following a recent serious fire in a Cork shopping centre. Dozens of cars were destroyed in the blaze at Douglas Village Shopping Cen-

tre on September 1. There were no casualties or injuries in the huge blaze, which started when one vehicle in the car park caught fire. There are 12 underground car parks in Killarney, most of which are attached to well-known hotels and one underneath the Department of Transport, Tourism and Sport on New Road.

Crews from the Killarney branch of the Kerry Fire and Rescue Service checked hose reels, fire exits, emergency lighting and extinguishers. The building on Park Place off High

St, where the Killarney Advertiser is based, is also served by an underground car park. There is also a public accessible car park under the Central Point Shopping Centre on Park Road.

Bullet train for Killarney on Council agenda A Killarney councillor is calling for a Japanese-style 'Shinkansen' high-speed train – otherwise known as Bullet Trains - to link towns like Killarney and Tralee to Dublin. | By Sean Moriarty

Damaged sculptures are now repaired

Vandalised woodwork sculptures in The Demense have been repaired within a day – thanks to a kind-hearted local company. | By Sean Moriarty The Leen family, who operate Killarney DIY, came to the rescue and have since repaired two sculptures which were broken on Wednesday night along the River Deenagh walk from the bridge on Port Road to Deenagh Cottage. West Cork artist Sol Solomon created the

seven works of art that represent a heron, a red squirrel, a kingfisher, an otter a pine marten and a white-fronted goose which were installed in March after being commissioned by the Killarney Looking Good Committee with support from Kerry County Council, with the idea to encourage children and members of the public to take an interest in the wild life in the park. Earlier this week the white-fronted goose and the heron carvings were vandalised, the heron’s neck was snapped off and the goose was ripped from it base. “It is heart-breaking,” Killarney Looking Good Chairperson Yvonne Quill told the Killarney Advertiser this week. Dan Leen was able to create a wood-dowel and repair the point where the heron’s neck was snapped off. The legs of the goose were too badly damaged to repair properly, but Dan created a round base and was able to re-install the sculpture on its plinth on Thursday morning. “It is a shame to have to use my skills for something like this,” Dan told the Killarney Advertiser. “They are better served on something else. This is being done by people acting the gom, being the hardman, it is the same when you see flowers damaged.” Both Dan and Yvonne suggested the installation CCTV cameras to monitor the area to prevent further damage in the future. “They have caught people fly-tipping this way in the past,” Dan added.

Cllr Michael Gleeson, who is also the Cathaoirleach of the Killarney Municipal District, will put this proposal before Kerry County Council on Monday of next week. Gleeson says that proper rail links between the west of Ireland and the capital will help revitalise rural Ireland. “The largely uncoordinated and piecemeal expansion of Dublin has been hugely to the detriment of much of rural Ireland and its self, in the process, become a nightmare place in which to live,” he told the Killarney Advertiser. He feels that a high-speed service would encourage people who work in Dublin to live in a place like Killarney. “People do not wish to live in that chaotic and overcrowded city,” he said. “This relocation can never be realistically achieved using cars or airport. The only really viable way to do this would be through the development of super-fast trains.” According to inter modal travel website rometorio.com, the rail journey between to the two stations is 259km, 41km shorter than going by road. The current journey between Killarney and Dublin Heuston takes 3hrs and

Cllr Michael Gleeson

18mins. In Britain, a high-speed rail line between Birmingham and London, a project of around half the distance between Dublin and Killarney is costing over £33bn, including Compulsory Purchase Orders (CPO) for nearby lands. “The only constrains would be an inability to think positive and think big,” added Gleeson. “Millions and millions of euro are being spent on travel infrastructure in Dublin, much of it seeking to undo inadequacies in the orignal development. Far better I believe to think of projects such as this that are keeping pace with what is really needed in Ireland as an entire country.”

Councillors call for Rock Road traffic calming Cllr says he “has seen many near misses” | By Sean Moriarty A Killarney councillor said he has “seen many, many near misses” on Rock Road as councillors called for traffic calming measures to be put in place. The Killarney Municipal District meeting, held on Wednesday last week, heard concerns that motorists travelling towards town are unable to see the crossing. At the meeting, councillors approved the second phase of the Rock Road improvement scheme. Earlier this year the new car and bus park on Rock Road were officially opened. The second-phase involves wider footpaths and a cycle lane as well as resur-

facing of Rock Road itself. Councillors unanimously welcomed the provision, but they called for additional works at the crossing between the Garda Station and the library at the town end of the street. “This is a good scheme,” Mayor of Kerry, Cllr Niall Kelleher told the meeting. “The pedestrian crossing near the library, there are an amount of people standing and I have seen many, many near misses.” Cllr Cronin echoed these comments. “This is hugely welcome,” he told the meeting. “But is there anything that can be done to forewarn motorists that there is a pedestrian crossing?”

Killarney London Reunion plan 50 year celebration | By Sean Moriarty The Killarney London Reunion will celebrate its 50th anniversary this November with a gala function in the famed Crown Hotel in Cricklewood.

Models plan to take on the catwalk

They’ve taken on an illness and beaten it – and now locals plan to use their experience and strut their stuff on the catwalk to help raise funds for local cancer services. | By Michelle Crean It’s no ordinary fashion event in the INEC on Wednesday, September 25 as brave members of the public don some of the finest in fashion for the ‘Models in Recovery Fashion Show’. Now in its sixth year it has become a fantastic fundraiser for the Hospice Foundation locally, Cathal Walshe from the Killarney Branch of Kerry Hospice Foundation told the Killarney Advertiser. “All 20 models female and male are in recovery from cancer of various types and will take to the catwalk for this worthy cause.” The compere for the evening will be Noel Cunningham of TV fame. The night begins with a wine reception at 7.30pm

with the added bonus of valuable door and spot prizes to be won. “The models put in a lot of work in preparation and would appreciate the support of the public. “It takes great courage to take part in this. It’s a serious event, one of the biggest fundraisers hospice has in the year. Last year €25,000 was raised and 1200 people came to support it.” Tickets are priced at €15 and available from the models, from Pat Doolan, Chairperson of Killarney Hospice or participating stores and the Box Office at the INEC, he added. “Among the valuable prizes to be won is an oversized multicoloured silk wrap by famed designer Don O'Neill on the night.”

The Killarney Association London was formed in 1969 by local priest Tom Looney, who was the parish priest in Wembley at the time, Cllr Donal Grady and the late Cllr Michael Courtney. Serving as a home away from home for Killarney exiles, it has gone from strength to strength over the last half century. The annual reunion is one of the social highlights of the year for Kerry people living in London. This year’s event will take

place on Saturday, November 16. Each year the Killarney-London Committee select a ‘Person of the Year’ – and details of this year’s recipient will be announced in due course. The presentation will be made at the reception which will be attended by Mayor of Killarney, Cllr Niall Kelleher, and Cllr Donal Grady, Chairman of the Killarney-London Reunion committee. Cllr Grady has been involved with the organisation for the past 50 years and he has worked tirelessly to ensure it continues to prosper and that strong bonds are maintained. The Killarney Advertiser is one of the main sponsors of the Killarney London Reunion.

Killarney based Contralto Grace Foley, who launched her album ‘Unleashed’ a few months ago, will take to the stage with the tenor on September 21. The show will take listeners to the very edges of the Classical Crossover genre with an incredibly wide repertoire of wonderful songs. This unique show includes a varied programme of music; from Bizet to Lana Del Ray, Ennio Morricone to Damien Rice. So far the duo have packed the National Concert Hall and sold out The Whale Theatre in Greystones, so this really does promise to be a night to remember. The

tour also takes them to Linenhall Arts Centre Castlebar and of course the INEC Killarney which is a venue very close to the Killarney singer's heart. “The Acoustics Club is my favourite venue,” Grace told the Killarney Advertiser this week. “The tour is going fantastic and there’s been very good feedback as people love our voices together.” To get tickets simply go to www.inec. ie or www.gracefoley.ie or Grace Foley Singer on Facebook.

Killarney Cardiac Response Unit seeks volunteers Killarney Cardiac Response Unit is looking for volunteers to join its team and the group is holding an open information meeting next Wednesday. | By Sean Moriarty

TRAGIC: Aneta Sawicka sadly passed away last week whilst swimming in a pool in Killarney.

“She was like a sister” - friend pays tribute to tragic Aneta | By Michelle Crean Friends and even strangers have rallied together and in days raised over €6,000 to help with funeral costs for a woman who tragically died in Killarney last week. 44-year-old Polish national Aneta Sawicka, whose funeral took place this morning (Friday) in St Mary’s Cathedral, died after taking ill whilst swimming at around 2.30pm in the Gleneagle Leisure Centre last Thursday. Lifeguards came to her aid and the emergency services were on the scene within minutes, including the newly launched community air ambulance which was stood down. It’s believed she was unresponsive when removed from the water, and was taken by ambulance to University Hospital Kerry (UHK), but later died. Aneta’s two brothers travelled immediately from their hometown of Zuromin, and will take her ashes home with them. Sadly, her parents couldn’t make her funeral but will watch it live online on www. killarneyparish.com. Her close friend of 13 years, Lidia Lewandowska, says everyone is just shocked and they’re trying to terms with

the devastating news. “She was like a sister,” Lidia told the Killarney Advertiser. “It was very unexpected, and we don’t know how it happened.” Aneta had been living in Killarney for a number of years then moved to Cork to study Fine Art and Photography at Crawford College, and returned back to Killarney a few months ago. She was very athletic, enjoyed the outdoors including days out mountain climbing and swam almost daily. She also worked with local production company OC Productions on projects such as ‘Let's be Frank’, ‘Bouncers’, ‘The Gift’ and ‘Tradition’. “She was extremely talented. She loved sports and had visited the Himalayas. She was very healthy.” She added that she’s so grateful to the local community for banding together so quickly to raise the funds. “It was our time to show our respect for her and her family. It took three days to raise the funds and the page is now closed, but it just shows what people thought of her. We are going to miss her so much.” The Gleneagle Group offered their sympathies saying it was ‘very tragic and sad for all concerned’.

Currently around 40 volunteers, from all sectors of society, respond to 999/112 emergency calls on a 24/7 basis. They are activated once a cardiac call is made to ambulance control and cover an area of 6km from the centre of Killarney. “We work alongside and under the control of the National Ambulance Service. We are not here to replace the ambulance service but to complement them by providing care and utilising those

vital few minutes as every second counts, until the National Ambulance Service arrive on scene,” PRO Carole Moran told the Killarney Advertiser. “We operate 24 hours a day but even with 40 volunteers it is impossible to cover every shift.” KCRU’s open night will take place at the Killarney Plaza Hotel on Wednesday, September 18 between 7pm and 9pm. For more information contact the KCRU’s recruitment officer on recruitment@killarneycru.ie, 085 8255280 or 064 6694144.

Owners have 28 days to fix unsafe building - says Council The owners of a Killarney building have been warned by Kerry County Council that they have 28 days to make the building safe. The notice was posted on the exterior of the building of Julie’s Barbershop at 71 High St after it was the subject of an independent engineer’s report, and the owners have until September 27 to make the building safe. The notice, which has been seen by the Killarney Advertiser, states that the building is a dangerous structure and

that remedial works need to carried out to: ‘Render the building safe, such that it does pose a danger to public or any adjoining properties’. “[This] follows an independent engineering assessment of the property as well as an inspection by Kerry County Council engineers (the details of which are not being published at this time). As you will note, the owner/s has 28 days to address the matter to the Council’s satisfaction,” said a Kerry County Council spokesperson.

Columnist ANNE LUCEY gives her take on happenings in Killarney, Kerry and beyond

What genius led Leo to make this gaffe?

Athena the grey-eyed goddess has long fascinated me. She was on the side of the most attractive and boldest of the Greek heroes, like her half-brother Hercules and the not to be trusted wily Odysseus. She was wise, wore beautiful clothes and sandals and was exceptionally good with her hands doing amazing craft work. She had a great insight into people and inherited a sixth sense from her mother; she knew the law backwards and often laid down the law. Pallas Athena could watch you silently from the silver green of a shimmering olive grove but she could also deliver a few blows. She was not easily fooled or flattered. The owl was sacred to her, Athens was called after her - but you wouldn’t want to cross her. In many ways she was the ideal Greek woman. She later became watered down to the Virgin Mary in which all her character except her supposed virginity was removed and she had to put on the alien veil of submissiveness in the Christian Church tradition of womanhood. What then was Leo thinking saying he would be “your Athena” to Boris being Hercules? Hercules did the most terrible of deeds in killing his family and had to perform extraordinary tasks to reinstate himself. So what genius led Leo to the gaffe? I have long suspected Leo isn’t half as

clever as we think he is. Yes, certainly, he may have rote-learned enough to get into medicine - but that doesn’t make him an intellectual. He is very comfortable with Love Island, or Love Actually, or Kylie Minogue. But classical myth? I wondered was there perhaps a Disney version that poor Leo or his script writer had been watching, a kind of Hercules and the Lion King, or had he missed the start of the story? Perhaps he was trying to soap up to Boris, the classics scholar, as a good host would. But it backfired spectacularly! Whatever you say about the elite and dishevelled Brits, they know their myths - unlike the trendy Dublin Irish these days. People in some UK papers are getting their knickers in a twist that Leo actually meant some barb or jibe with the classical allusion or that this was an attempt to insult our Boris. Not a chance! Our Leo is incapable of irony or that kind of thinking. Anyway, it wouldn’t be the first time a Fine Gael leader has made a faux pas on the intellectual scales before a world

audience. Will anyone ever forget May 2011 and the time Enda Kenny in College Green welcomed Barack Obama and his wife Michelle with a rousing speech - based on Barack Obama’s very own inauguration address just three years before! I was watching it and I thought - hold on, that sounds familiar! And then Michelle was cracking up behind our Taoiseach and Obama was biting his lips to stop from doubling over! It was excruciating, but it didn’t knock a feather off Enda or Fine Gael who all denied plagiarism. The Blue Shirts are at heart “big bruisers” who are not troubled by too much self-doubt. And they get the job done. Founded this week in 1933, they have historically been regarded as rich and thick. God Bless them. People who enjoyed the fat of the land and were good at holding onto it! Big Phil may well barge the Brits through Brexit and corner them into a trade deal, and more power to him. But after one gaffe too many on the world stage, Fine Gael should really start a recruitment drive for intellectuals to at least walk among them. People who don’t just hum along to ‘I should be so lucky, lucky, lucky’. “Prorogued” is on everyone’s lips - as if we were all born to the phrase “par-

“Pa Daly’s challenge will be to get votes in the south of the county” The news that Pa Daly, the Tralee based councillor, is to throw his hat into the ring and will likely succeed in getting the Sinn Fein nomination to contest the General Election in Kerry must be unsettling for some. Because whilst it is true that Pa is very Tralee - he does practice in the Killarney courts and is well liked there. He would have a broader appeal and a broader reach than most people realise. He is also a pretty shrewd operator and is liked across the parties on the Council. Now aged 48, he was co-opted in 2012

to Tralee Town Council and elected in 2014, and is in his second term as a county councillor. Since the Ferris’ exit announcement, speculation has centred on whether Cllr Daly would seek the nomination. It has emerged he has sought and received the backing of a number of cumainn. Married to Mary Ross from Causeway and a father of four, he comes from a strong and surprisingly widely based political background, something that is not typically Sinn Fein which tends to draw from a narrow nationalist background.

But Daly’s relatives have Fianna Fail, SDLP and Green Party backgrounds. His uncle Sean Farren of the SDLP was a Minister in the first NI power-sharing government after the Good Friday Agreement and his great uncle Paddy Fitzgerald was a Fianna Fail councillor in Tralee for many years. And his cousin Conor Fitzgerald was the first Green Party councillor in Tralee. Sinn Fein lost its seat in the new Kenmare area in the last local elections and now have four councillors and all are in the old North constituency.

liament is about to be prorogued”, and knew what it meant. I did not know, and I greatly suspect, most of those writing about it so loftily and giving out about Boris “proroguing parliament” had to look it up too. All it means is prolong with a break in between. But how ridiculous has the whole thing become? There is a simple way of looking at Brexit. Remember Repeal the 8th? Well imagine now that most people in Ireland voted to Repeal the Eighth Amendment, but TDs like the Healy-Raes, John Brassil and others were in the majority and they decided, to a man, they could not in conscience vote to bring in the legislation. Three years later they were still finding a way to block the majority decision. That’s what is going on in Westminster in a nutshell. Regardless of the historic problems between England and Europe, and the rights and wrongs of the Leave Campaign in 2016, or the awful scenarios facing the UK without and even with a trade agreement, the bottom line is a majority of the elected MPs in England are not or are refusing to implement the will of the majority of the voters. And those trying to implement it - Boris and co are being pilloried and criticised by most of the media. So, “prorogue away! It is a crazy situation and one in which I think much of the world is looking at it through the wrong end of the lens. As for speaker Bercow, their version of our Ceann Comhairle, the fellow is amusing in the way a Latin school teacher might be, with the put downs etc. But he is far from correct in how he handled the whole fiasco and sided with the Remainers. He is very much part of the problem - even if he insists he doesn’t give a flying flamingo! The party did not take seats in Dingle and Castleisland with new candidates, but did make a mark, and fared poorly in Killarney. Pa Daly’s challenge will be to get votes in the south of the county, particularly in the Killarney area. I can’t see any outstanding TD among the current crop going for re-election in Kerry, and I would give Fianna Fail’s second candidate little chance of success. My money, with the field as it stands, is on all four sitting TDs retaining seats but dropping votes. Kerry has not benefited much from any of them. They could have banded together across party lines and come up with a way to keep the lower VAT rate for Kerry, and show the rest of the country what can be done when five rural TDs stick together. If Daly gets the nomination, things might shake up.

Schools join forces for special European project Two small rural schools from Killarney have teamed up with a Polish school for a two year long project – focusing on diet, exercise, interpersonal and intrapersonal skills.

Turn your trash into treasure in Beaufort

Turn your trash into treasure – that’s the latest fundraiser happening in Beaufort next month. | By Michelle Crean Local resident Kim Kelleher came up with the idea of the Trash and Treasure Fair fundraiser as a way to help the community fund renovation works for their local community centre. On October 20, from 11am to 5pm, Kim plans to have a number of stalls, which will be prepaid in advance, selling their unwanted ‘trash’. This then becomes a treasure for the buyer. “Beaufort Community Centre needs help in raising €20,000 towards much needed renovations,” Kim told the Killarney Advertiser this week. “The community is a focal point for more than 20 groups and is the heart of the village.” She said that anyone interested can book a table in advance only. “You sort out all the unwanted items you wish to sell and declutter your home. You will feel so much better doing this. Sell your unwanted items and make money for yourself. I’m looking for raffle prizes as well, which would be very much appreciated.”

The community centre was built in the ‘70s and over the years little money has been spent on the property. “We have over 20 voluntary groups using the facility including 30 meals made up six days a week for Meals and Wheels,” Chairman of Beaufort Community Council, Padruig O’Sullivan, said. “It is also used for drama productions and public meetings.” He added that a first phase upgrade the community council received €53,000 grant aid from South Kerry Development Partnership. “This money comes through Leader Funding which is set up to assist community groups to make improvements in their locality tied in with employment. The community must raise €20,000 to move the project on. So far we have collected €11,500 and our fundraising events are ongoing.” Entrance for adults is €2 and a raffle strip is included. Children are free. Refreshments will also be served. Anyone who’d like to book a table can contact Kim on 087 3588693.

Neighbouring schools Glenflesk NS and Raheen NS will receive funding to participate in an EU Programme aimed at supporting education, training, youth and sport among young people in Europe. The project ‘I’m a Super Duper Healthy Trooper’ is part of the Erasmus + Programme to encourage children to examine aspects of their lives and try to make changes to their lifestyles that will have a lifelong impact. The schools involved, including Jaworzno, near Krakow, hope to achieve this by getting children, teachers and parents to examine their diets, exercise, interpersonal and intrapersonal skills. The Irish National Agency, Léargas, was impressed by the application as the schools aim to foster autonomy in all their pupils where they will learn and practice how to look after their minds and bodies. The children will keep a diary for the duration of the project and this will help them to evaluate their progress. The children will also learn about each

other’s countries, schools, cultures and localities. “Glenflesk and Raheen are delighted to be part of this wonderful initiative and both schools are excited about the two year journey,” Principal of Glenflesk National School, Paul Favier, said: “It’s a great opportunity for two small rural schools in Kerry to be involved at European level. We look forward to sharing experiences with our partners in Poland, learning from each other and making lots of new friends along the way.” Joan Mullane, Principal of Raheen NS, added that the most exciting part of the project for the children will be when the pupils get to visit each other’s schools two years in a row. “Fifth and Sixth class pupils from Glenflesk NS and Raheen NS will travel to Poland in May 2020 and again in May 2021 for five days to meet their counterparts in Poland. The students from Poland will also visit Killarney to spend time in Glenflesk NS and Raheen NS.”

TWO YEAR PROJECT: Glenflesk NS and Raheen NS have joined forces as they take part in a special European project with a Polish school.

Weigh to go Denise! She’s over five stone lighter - but it’s not just a weight loss achievement that saw one local lady nominated for the regional finals of Slimming World’s Woman of the Year 2019 on Sunday. | By Michelle Crean Denise O’Connell from Mill Road, who is a member of Marie's Slimming World Killarney, made it to the last 14 in Dublin for the finals out of a possible 92,000 Slimming World members across the country.

Denise, who has gone through many life struggles in recent times, was voted by her fellow Slimming World members as they describe her as inspirational, motivational and kind. Denise is a target member and a diamond member meaning she has lost 5st 3lb and kept it off for over a year.

After being heavy all her life, mother of two Denise who works as a SNA in St Brendan’s College, decided to lose the weight for good. However, just after joining she learned her son Fiachra had cancer and while that’s enough for anyone to deal with, she also struggled with slipped discs – but managed to stay on the plan and inspire fellow slimmers. Kerry Mental Health plan new client’s garden | By Michelle Crean Plans are in place to develop a garden at Ross Café for clients of Kerry Mental Health Association – and this coming Wednesday there’s a fundraising coffee morning planned. The Lewis Road café is on the site of the former Ross Products cardboard factory which ceased trading in 2010. It was split in two with the café on one side and the Men’s Shed on the other. The Order of Malta and Killarney Valley Classic and Vintage Club also use space there. The café was opened in 2016 and was expanded in March of this year to facilitate the growing number of customers. And not only is there a café for clients and the public, but plenty of rooms for a

range of different activities including art, relaxation, computers and counselling. Bingo, music, drama and exercise classes are also run from the centre. However, now the Kerry Mental Health Association are ready to make it even better with a garden to the rear for the client’s to relax and enjoy nature. “We are raising funds for a new client’s garden,” Kathleen Collins, who works at the centre, told the Killarney Advertiser. “We’re so thankful to Ger Moynihan from South Kerry Development Partnership for the help he gave.” She said the centre is a wonderful place for client’s to come to take some time out and relax. “The most important thing is we’re here for a bun and a chat. We also rent rooms to community based projects.”

urday morning groups. “I started in May 2016, my starting weight was 14 stone 2Ibs,” she told the Killarney Advertiser. “I went to a wedding wearing a size 22 and couldn’t sit down – that was the deciding factor.” She said the plan suited her and now it’s her turn to help others. Her motto is ‘because I’m worth it’ and now enjoys wearing fashionable clothing and a new lease of life. “I want to live a healthy life.” Consultant Marie O’Sullivan added that Denise is an exceptional person. “Through all these scary times she kept going. She’s incredible and one of the strongest people I know. She’s such a support to the people in the group. She just gives up her time for everyone else. She’s exceptional.”

Kerry County Council wishes to advise that, following consultation with An Garda Síochána, the Glebe car park in Killarney will be closed from 3pm this Saturday to facilitate preparations for the homecoming of the Kerry Senior Football Team on Sunday evening. The car park will re-open on Monday morning. In addition, there will be no parking permitted on College Street after 7am on Sunday. Kerry County Council appreciates the cooperation of the public in this matter.

Memorial tournament to support Sully This year’s Deerpark’s Pitch & Putt Club’s ‘Ricky Kelly Memorial Tournament’, taking place next weekend from Friday to Sunday, will be one close to the club’s heart as it is in aid of a great supporter of the event - John ‘Sully’ O’Sullivan, to help him in his recovery from sepsis. It was around the time of last year’s event that John unfortunately became ill with the disease and was sorely missed for the night of the presentation as he loved coming to the barbeque associated with the event. John took up the sport of Pitch & Putt in the early ‘90s playing alongside his great friend Ger Brennan originally playing out of the Gleneagle Club before joining Deerpark, Jason O’Connor, PRO with the club,

explained. “A keen rallying enthusiast, John loved playing the game and played on teams in the event most years without fail,” Jason said. “When the club learned of his condition as well as his treks to Dublin for treatment, there were anxious to try and support him in whatever way they could, hence the decision to donate the proceeds of this year’s event to John and his family. John’s

friends have kindly come on board to help with the staging of this year’s event too.” The event is kindly sponsored by the Tatler Jack Bar. It’s open to both members and non-members of Pitch & Putt Ireland with a requirement for one non-registered member of Pitch & Putt Ireland to be on a team. The format returns to a 36-hole Three Ball Scramble this year and the cost of entry this year is €90 per adult team with an U16 section once more this year for a fee of €30 per team. Play is scheduled to begin on Friday afternoon, September 20 with tee-off times from 4pm to 5.30pm with tee-off times

on Saturday 21 from 10am to 5pm, and the Sunday morning of the 22, from 9am to 3pm (Last Card). “The presentation of prizes this year will take place in the clubhouse at 6pm on the Sunday as the club extends a big invite to former and current members, keen golfers, sharks, scrubbers and complete beginners to support this year’s event. A raffle for spot prizes will also be held in conjunction with the event.” Further information on this year’s event and anyone looking to pre-book tee-times can contact the club on 087 7823138 for further information.

Health fest promises something for everyone | By Michelle Crean Leading experts in the natural health field will be amongst some of this year’s guests at Kerry’s second Health & Wellness next week. Horan's Healthstores, who currently have 14 health stores in the Munster region, were so delighted with the success of last year’s inaugural event that they’ve planned an even bigger and better one next weekend, on Saturday and Sunday September 21 and 22 at the Rose Hotel in Tralee. From 10am to 5.30pm each day, a multitude of health professions will hold talks and offer advice to the public on hormone health, brain health, menopause, importance of fish oils, cholesterol, nutrition for the family, stress, immunity, joint care, vitamin D

deficiency, the importance of multivitamins, probiotics and CBD products. With 50 exhibitors in attendance you will be able to sample healthy snacks and beverages as well as gain valuable advice from qualified nutritionists and specialists who will answer any queries you may have, Sandra Breen, Regional Manager of Horan's Healthstores, explained to the Killarney Advertiser. "Having visited Health shows all over Europe, I felt it was time to bring one of these Health shows to Tralee," she said. “Due to the success of our inaugural Health & Wellness fest last year, we decided to hold an even bigger and better one this year.” Over the two day event they will have key speakers including renowned nutritionists Patrick Holford and Dr Marilyn Glenville, nutritionist and author Oliver McCabe and others. However, places

are limited for both Patrick and Marilyn's talks, she added. “Talks will need to be booked in store prior to the event.” There will also be health screening on both days including, BMI testing, cholesterol testing from 10am until 1pm, bio-resonance testing, reflexology, skin analysis, eye analysis, makeovers, as well as hand and arm massage. “There will also be Tai Chi, Qi Gong and Pilates workshops over the weekend.” Tickets cost €10 and are available at all Horan's Healthstores. Customers are advised to book early to be assured of a space for talks as there is an extremely limited availability. Spot prizes of over €2000 are also up for grabs over the weekend and there’ll be outdoor broadcasts with Radio Kerry each day and face painting for kids.

QUEST KILLARNEY ADVENTURE RACE Quest Killarney adventure race takes place in just over 4 weeks on 12th October. In the run up to it, every week here in the Killarney Advertiser, we will give you all the information you need to get ready for the world’s biggest adventure race.

EVENT PREPARATION In Ireland, it’s not uncommon to get 4 seasons in one day, so it is important to be prepared and have the right gear.

WHAT EQUIPMENT / GEAR DO I NEED? The race organisers provide a high level of safety cover along the route but there will not be marshals around every corner, so it is vital that all competitors bring the following mandatory kit with them from the start. • Basic first aid kit (min: 1 x dressing pad (field dressing), bandage and plasters. • Map of the route (included in your race pack). • Survival blanket and whistle. • Appropriate food and drink depending on your route length. There will be limited water re-filling points on the course. • Cycle helmet, bike repair kit, spare tube and pump. • Waterproof jacket. • Suitable footwear (trail runners). All kits will be checked on the morning of the race. Participants will not be allowed to race without mandatory kit. We will provide kayaks and buoyance aids. All you need to bring is a bike, trail runners, your mandatory kit and a quest for adventure!

WHAT TYPE OF RUNNERS SHOULD I USE? One of the most important things for adventure racing is footwear. Don’t wear your brand-new runners. Get a pair of trail shoes that give you support and grip. Your feet will get wet on the run sections and on the kayak. You can visit O’Sullivan’s outdoor shop on New Street Killarney to get advice on tips and gear you need for race day. We are here to help so if you have any questions on the route or the gear required feel free to email us at info@eliteevents.ie WE HAVE LOTS OF INFORMATION ON OUR WEBSITE, INCLUDING TRAINING PLANS, TIPS AND ADVICE FROM THE EXPERTS. HORANS Healthstores

100% Irish Owned

This week we’re looking at natural ways to increase fibre in your diet to help prevent constipation.

Increase fibre intake for a happier healthier bowel A good balanced diet is essential for healthy digestion and bowel health. However, due to the modern day diet of heavily processed foods constipation is becoming more and more common and can cause numerous health problems if left untreated. Poor eating habits, lack of fibre and nutrients, eating white flour products (glue foods), overeating, bad food combining, stress, lack of exercise or general poor living habits can lead to this uncomfortable and embarrassing issue, and every system of the body can be affected through auto intoxication because of this. When constipated, the colon becomes a breathing ground for bacteria, viruses, parasites, yeasts, moulds, etc. Avoid habit forming laxatives as they kill

friendly intestinal flora. A high fibre diet will help to clean and completely eliminate the colon of waste product soon after eating. Increase your consumption of whole grains, whole wheat, brown rice, whole oats, buckwheat and quinoa as they contain bran rich in fibre, vitamins and minerals, as well as complex carbohydrates and protein. Eat smaller meals and chew food mindfully. Some juices may also help with constipation, such as prune, apple and peach, which have a natural laxative effect. Avoid or cut down on processed foods and sugars. Exercise and drinking plenty of water throughout the day will help with healthy bowel function. Also, here are some herbal remedies which will help with bowel and overall digestive health:

•M ILK THISTLE or DANDELION: to enhance bile output and soften stools (available in capsule or liquid form) • BEE POLLEN: two tsp to regulate intestinal function • OMEGA 3 FLAXSEED OIL CAPS: to help prevent constipation • VITAMIN C: helps to destroy toxins in the colon • MAGNESIUM: helps relax the bowel • POTASSIUM: healing for the stomach and colon • PROBIOTICS: restores healthy bacteria in the gut • B-COMPLEX: these vitamins help regularity, protect the intestine and improve digestion. They also help to eliminate toxins from the liver • LEPICOL: combination of psyllium husk and probiotic which contributes to the maintenance of normal bowel movements • SLIPPERY ELM: helps heal the colon and aid digestion • ALOE VERA JUICE: helps to calm and sooth the bowel and helps with elimination.

Until next time, stay healthy, FROM ALL AT HORAN’S HEALTH.

DONATION: Simone Behal with her daughter Emilie accepting a cheque from the Pavers Foundation on behalf of Down Syndrome Kerry (DSK) with Store Manager Denise Smyth and Supervisor Sarah Doherty.

Pavers donates £1,000 to Down Syndrome Kerry Down Syndrome Kerry has been awarded £1,000 by the Pavers Foundation, the employee led charitable trust created by family-owned shoe retailer Pavers Shoes. Denise Smyth, Store Manager of Pavers in Killarney, applied through the Foundation’s employee grant initiative to help Down Syndrome Kerry, a charity very close to her heart. Each staff member can put forward causes close to their heart which relate to health, education, or community. Since launching, the Pavers Foundation has awarded a total of £541,353 to charity. Down Syndrome Kerry is a parent led organisation that helps families to deal with the diagnosis of their child having Down Syndrome. The organisation is passionate about ensuring that children with special education needs have access to an inclusive learning environment, providing a wide range of support, including occupational therapy, physiotherapy and speech and language therapy services for younger persons and employment and education opportunities. The charity also offers recrea-

tional services to their members, such as swimming lessons, Zumba, basketball, cookery, cycling lessons and horse riding. “Down Syndrome is very close to my heart being in my own family and seeing the daily challenges that families face, that have not been funded by the Government, I wanted to try to help in any way possible,” Denise Smyth said. “While I was pregnant with my own little boy, a friend of mine was also pregnant and gave birth to a beautiful little girl Emilie who was born with Down Syndrome. Seeing first-hand the challenges that Simone faces with her little girl, I wanted to reach out to the Pavers Foundation and see if they would help with these challenges, such as occupational therapy and speech therapy along with social and educational activities. I know that the £1,000 will be put to great use.” Shirley Morris, Admin Secretary at Down Syndrome Kerry added that their goal is to help people with Down Syndrome make their own futures as bright and as independent as possible by providing them with education, support and friendship every step of the way. “Thank you to the Pavers Foundation for helping us to achieve our goal.”

Local competition open to budding artists How society and communities change, grow and develop for the better is the theme for this year’s Credit Union art competition. Killarney Credit Union is urging the local community to take the ‘Walk of Life’ for its annual art competition building on last year’s theme of ‘The Force of Nature’, which focused on challenges facing the environment and our planet. Entrants will have free reign to express their thoughts, opinions, visions and hopes on this theme. The closing date to submit finished entries to your local branch is October 25. Participants are encouraged to draw inspiration from the positive changes they might have witnessed in their own local communities, or in wider society. “Our art competition is an important

everyone to spend a little time thinking about what the ‘Walk of Life’ theme means to them, and how they might like to depict it through art. Of course, our budding artists can also think on a more global level if they want – really the only rules in the competition are set by the

artists’ own imagination!” The hugely popular, national art competition is now in its 36th year and is open to children aged seven years and under right through to 18 years and over. There is also a category for those with physical or intellectual difficulties. The annual competition is part of the Irish League of Credit Unions’ (ILCU) commitment to supporting the artistic development of both young and old in communities throughout Ireland. Local winners will receive their prizes at a prize-giving ceremony in Killarney Credit Union. National winners will receive cash-prizes at an award ceremony to be held in February 2020. Entry forms are available from all Killarney Credit Union branches in Beech Road, Park Road, Kenmare and Cahersiveen.

Ian has been confined to a wheelchair since a life-changing accident in August 2017, an accident he was lucky to survive. Throughout his rehabilitation and recovery, Ian has received help and support from Spinal Injuries Ireland, a group that help and facilitate those living with spinal injuries to live active and fulfilled lives. Students were also given a chance to

win a signed Kerry jersey, sponsored by the GAA Store in the Outlet Centre which was organised by former Kerry Minor Mark Cooper, who is also a student in the current Leaving Cert class in the college. “Spinal Injuries Ireland plays a massive role in my life now and it's very good of my classmates to support it,” Ian said. “We have to pick one charity and SII is close to everyone here. Best of luck to the Kerry team and if they play as good as the last day we should be alright.” Other members of the 2019 Kerry Minor panel: Emmett O’Shea, Ruairi Doyle, Ryan O’Grady and Eoghan O’Sullivan, are also Leaving Cert students at the school and supported today’s initiative.

BEST OF LUCK! To the Kerry Seniors In the All-Ireland Football Final

KERRY FOR SAM EXCLUSIVE

Kerry support from Texas USA An impromptu four-day visit to Killarney by a Texan tourist last January has resulted in Kerry gaining at least one more overseas supporter. | By Sean Moriarty Laura Reich visited Killarney in January with some of her US Army colleagues. After a few days hiking and touring, her party spent a Saturday night socialising in The Grand Hotel. There, while they were discussing a planned golf outing on Sunday, a local overheard them and told them, “the golf can wait”, and invited them to the Kerry V Tyrone match at Fitzgerald Stadium, the opening tie in this year’s National League campaign. Kerry won the match and along the way gained a new fan. “Football is more than just a game in Texas, passion runs fierce from Little

League to Collegiate,” she told the Killarney Advertiser. “Gaelic football is on a different stratospheric level though.” Currently based in Seattle, Washington, she will watch the game there or in Dallas. “If I don't make the flight home to Dallas to watch game online with my brother,” she added. Laura will return to Killarney in October, her third visit to the town having previously revisited in June this year, and could be back in January for the resumption of the National League. “Do not be surprised if you hear a cowbell ringing to cheer on Kerry in the season opener in January 2020.”

Mass times changed across parishes for replay

The decider, which has a throw in time of 6pm tomorrow (Saturday), is being broadcast live on RTE. Traditional Saturday evening vigil Masses usually take place between 6pm and 8pm at the same time that the match on. St Mary’s Cathedral in Killarney will host an extra Mass at 4.30pm as well as its usual 6.15pm vigil. “We are committed to the regular

6.15pm Mass as we have intentions for this, but we are adding an extra Mass for 4.30pm on Saturday evening in St Mary’s Cathedral,” Parish Secretary, Sheila Leavy, said. Vigil Mass at the Church of the Resurrection on Park Road has been delayed by half an hour and is now scheduled for 8pm. The same applies to the Church of Our Lady of Lourdes in Kilcummin. St Agatha’s Church in Glenflesk and the Prince of Peace in Fossa, near Killarney, have brought their vigil Masses forward to 4.30pm. Other churches in the region may follow suit and parishioners are advised to contact their local church to confirm changes to the timetable.

up the flags, is himself a true Dub so he hardly did it to offend his home team. A more simple explanation was offered by administration staff at the Friary. “It got jammed,” the Killarney Advertiser was told this week. “Even the Kerry flag would not go up so Fr Liam decided to have a bit of craic.” However, Fr Liam McCarthy has promised to leave the flag at half-mast if Kerry win and Dublin loose. The trade

off in this deal is that the flags will be swapped if the Dubs win. “I think the Kerry team know what it is like to lose the five-in-a-row and for that reason I think they might let Dublin have it,” the Rialto native told the Killarney Advertiser. “After that this Kerry team will be around for a long time. If Kerry win on Saturday I will leave the flags that way, if Dublin win the flags will have to be swapped.”

Hotel group goes Dutch! Leading Dutch tour operators, travel agents and online travel agents attended Tourism Ireland’s annual travel trade workshop, which took place in Amsterdam last week. Nine tourism companies from the island of Ireland – including the Gleneagle Hotel Group – took part in the workshop. The schedule included a series of oneto-one meetings, giving the participating companies from Ireland a platform to do business for 2020 with the Dutch travel professionals. The workshop also provided Tourism Ireland with an opportunity to announce Taste the Island in the Netherlands – an exciting new all-island initiative, developed by Fáilte Ireland in conjunction with Tourism Ireland and Tourism NI, involving more than 500 food and drink-related experiences over 59 days. Deputy Head of Mission, Robert Jack-

son, was in attendance to welcome the guests. “We were delighted that these important Dutch travel agents and tour operators took the time to meet with our partners from Kerry and Ireland, to learn about our superb tourism offering and to encourage them to extend the Ireland content of their existing programmes and itineraries, or to include the island of Ireland for the first time in their 2020 programmes,” Karen van der Horst, Tourism Ireland’s Manager in the Netherlands, said. “The Netherlands is an important market for tourism to the island of Ireland. In 2018, we welcomed almost 247,000 Dutch visitors. Tourism Ireland is rolling out an extensive programme of promotions in the Netherlands this autumn, to encourage more Dutch holidaymakers to explore our regions and less-visited attractions, during the shoulder and off-season months.”

The club were due to meet in Killarney anyway as its annual Molls’ Gap to The Healy Pass run is due to get underway at 12 noon on Sunday. After a successful first attempt at Cars

It is organised by owner of KC Print, Cormac Casey, and Ger Neeson, who are both active members of the Killarney and District Motor Club. “This is a social event, car enthusiasts hanging out talking cars and drinking coffee in a chilled relaxed atmosphere,” Cormac Casey, KC Print MD, said. NEWS

13.09.2019

Teenage sweethearts tie the knot Stephen and Katie’s wedding is a story from a fairy tale as they tied the knot after 13 years together.

Stephen O’Neill (32) from Pinewood and Katie O’Sullivan (29) from Scrahan Court had the most magical day on Saturday last as they sealed their love in front of family and friends. The couple, who now live and work in Cork, Stephen for McGurks Golf and Katie in B2B Signs, said ‘I Do’ in a civil ceremony in the Springfort Hall Mallow in front of their closest family and friends. Best Man was Stephen’s brother James O’Neill Jr., and Groomsman was his friend James Hurley. Maid of Honour was Katie’s sister Debbie O’Sullivan and Bridesmaid was Amanda O’Shea, Katie’s friend. Stephen is the son of Breeda and James O’Neill Snr., and Katie is daughter of Sheila and Tim O’Sullivan. The couple met while attending Killarney Community College when Katie was 16 and Stephen was 18 and have been together ever since. However, Stephen admits that Katie is a patient woman as he only got up the courage to propose last year and the couple had been wedding planning ever

since. “It only took me 12 years to propose,” Stephen told the Killarney Advertiser this week. “She’s very patient. It is very hard to surprise her, but I did when she returned home from a trip to Paris with her sister. I got down on one knee and she couldn’t talk for a while after!” They opted for the beautiful Springfort Hall as their venue, which by coincidence is where Katie’s aunt got married 30 years ago, and said everything went off without a hitch on the day – including the weather. Killarney photographer Ian Cronin captured the very special moments of the day followed by a photoshoot with the bridal party in Doneraile Park. “The hotel was unbelievable,” he said. “We had great craic altogether.” And after months of planning the big day, the couple enjoyed a few days in Mount Juliet Estate, then Castlemartyr and tomorrow (Saturday) will head to Dubrovnik for a week.

Surprise 60th birthday By his own admission, Robert Kerins is a hard man to shock - but his wife Joan got one up on him on Saturday night. They left their Lissivigeen home on the premise that just the two were going to celebrate his 60th birthday. But, when they arrived at the Royal Hotel, Robert was shocked to find almost his entire extended family there before him. “I am a hard man to shock,” he said. “But

I can tell you I was fairly surprised on Saturday. It is rare we are all together and we had a mighty night. Kerry and Cork meet for bridal party celebration In early November, Carol Gaine and Donal Costello will tie the knot. Carol is from Mallow and Donal hails from Tralee. So when Carol’s sister and bridesmaid Helen set about organising the bridal party, a celebration of the coming to-

GARDEN MAGIC

Gardening - By Debby Looney

Debby is available for advice and garden consultations, just call 086 6088156 or email barnhillky@gmail.com

Now is the time to invest in next year’s garden September for me is synonymous with bulbs. I find it an exciting time of year as we are preparing for new beginnings. Cleaning up borders, discarding overgrown annuals there is a great sense of purpose to the early autumn. Bulbs are planted at two times of the year, depending on when they flower. Autumn flowering plants in the spring, so for example, Gladioli, Dahlias and Crocosmias are for sale in March and April, and should be planted then. The bulbs which are for sale now will flower in spring. Many people new to gardening expect to buy daffodils in spring, when they are in flower, not realising it is much more economical to plant them now. While it is possible to buy daffodils, crocus, tulips etc., in pots in the spring, typically you will only get two or three bulbs in a pot, for the same price that you might get 10 now. So be warned new gardeners, now is the time to invest in next year’s colour! In general, all bulbs fertile, well-drained soil as they spend most of their lives under the ground. It can help to put some potting grit or perlite under them when planting to help with drainage, however, this can also cause a permanent pool of water underneath them, which is not the desired effect. Adding a small amount of fertiliser can be helpful, however too much and you end up with lots of green-

ery and few flowers. Bone Meal in my experience is the best additive as it gives a good boost to root formation. One of the best ways to ensure future good flowering is to let the foliage die back into the bulb when flowering is over. It is very difficult to keep some bulbs going if they are not in an ideal location. Generally tulips are very hard to keep from year to year. They are originally from dry, rocky countries in the Middle East and not really suited to our wet heavy soil. They like a dry, gravelly or sandy soil – yet do not like to dry out either. Tulips are well worth the effort as they come in such an array of colours and styles. My personal favourites are the lily flowered tulips. These have a long slender flower which is tapered or fluted as opposed to the goblet shaped flowers of the more common tulips. They don’t open and fall apart as quickly as the goblet shaped varieties, and are better for coming back each year. Another favourite bulb of mine, which is technically a corm, is the small Anemone blanda. The bulbs for this little plant are very inexpensive, but they will reward you year after year with pretty flowers ranging from purple to mauve to pink and white. All bulbs should be planted roughly twice the depth of their height, so if a bulb is five cm tall, it should be planted around 15 cm deep, if it is two cm tall plant at a depth of six cm.

On Friday, October 18, The Killarney Park will host a special Food and Wine evening with a five-course tasting dinner paired perfectly with world renowned Masi Wines. The evening will be a celebration of all that is great about Kerry food, the best of the harvest season and topped off with some amazing wine pairings from Masi Wines. Wines will be expertly chosen by well-known Master of Wine, Mick O’Connell. Mick is just one of only seven Masters of Wine in Ireland. Executive chef, Heiko Riebandt, leads

the kitchen brigade at The Killarney Park. Having trained in luxury five-star hotels and resorts across the world, Heiko brings the tastes of ‘The Kingdom’ to the plate with his delectable menus. With a menu featuring Cromane Oyster Rockefeller Raviolo, Roasted Bramley Apple Sorbet, Black Faced Mountain Lamb, The Killarney Park signature ‘Gairdín’ chocolate and the chef’s selection of petit fours, the key ingredient from each dish has been carefully chosen to highlight the range and quality of local produce. The evening will begin with a drinks reception in the Library at 7pm and finish with a night cap in the Whiskey Room. The Killarney Park Taste the Island Evening is priced at €70 per person. Tralee woman swims English Channel Tralee woman Elaine Burrows Dillane has become the first Kerry woman to swim the English Channel. Elaine swam from the English coast, near Dover, Kent, to Le Gris Nez in Pays de Calais in France on Tuesday. She left Dover at 7am, accompanied by her supporters which included her swimming coach Kevin Williams from Tralee, one of Ireland’s most experienced offshore swimmers who is Ger McDonald, and her daughter Muireann. They were on board a boat call ‘The Optimist’.

The mother of two arrived in France around 12 hours and 45 minutes later. September is considered the best month for channel swims, sea temperature averaged 18C for the crossing. Her coach said that while the channel is 36km, due to current and tricky waters it is considered closer to 45km for swimmers. “The first eight-and-a-half hours of the swim the weather was fab and the water was like glass, beautiful and clear, but for the last four it was like someone turned on a light,” she told the Irish Independent. "It was very difficult. It was windy

and the waves were big so I was fighting the water and tried to go with it as it was quite rough.” Elaine is fundraising for Brain Tumour Ireland, a cause close to her heart as a close family friend of Elaine’s was diagnosed with a brain tumour aged four. Elaine is no stranger to daring sea swim feats, and in the summer of 2017, she became the first woman to swim from Blennerville to Fenit and back (16k). In 2018, she took on a bigger challenge, swimming a total of 21k from Blennerville to the Maharees.

Donald Trump’s re-election campaigners will launch a smartphone App this autumn to encourage supporters to donate, volunteer and reel in like-minded voters while also providing the president more unfiltered access to his followers. One of the most important features will be the App’s use of prizes — maybe VIP seats or a photo with Trump — to persuade the most fervent supporters to recruit their friends, rewarding them as campaigns have been doing for top donors for years, according to people familiar with the plans. The upcoming launch is the latest sign of how Trump’s team is using its huge coffers to drive a more professional and data-driven op-

The event will feature vintage cars, tractors and organisers are hopeful that two steam engines will be on working display on the day. The event gets underway at 12noon. “We are aware that there is a Cars and Coffee event in Killarney the same day,” organiser George Glover told the Killarney Advertiser at the event launch last week. “But we invite participants in that event to come here afterwards, get two events in, and make a day of it.” Demonstrations of more labour intensive and less mechanised methods of saving and harvesting the crops with hand tools and horse machinery will be held too.

While campaigns have had Apps for years, the Trump App is expected to let the president‘s team track followers in a more comprehensive way than ever before in its bid to secure the president another White House term. The App could help the campaign connect with potential voters as aides focus their re-election strategy more on turning out their conservative base on Election Day and less on persuading undecided people to vote for Trump. But first the campaign will need to persuade people to download the App, a task that digital experts say has doomed other Apps.

Kerry sheep dogs on the international stage Kerry is well-represented on two of the world’s most-prestigious Sheepdog Trial competitions. Tom O'Sullivan from Kilcummin, is a member of the Irish team that will contest the International Sheepdog Trials in Scotland this weekend. He recently competed in the Irish National Sheepdog Trials in County Down where 150 sheepdog handlers and sheepdogs from all over Ireland competed to make the 15 man Irish Team for this weekend’s international event where 60 competitors from Ireland, England, Scotland and Wales will compete at the International for the top prize in sheepdog trialling.

“This is my third time on the Irish Team, having previously represented Ireland with one of my first trial dogs in 2008 and 2011,” Tom told the Killarney Advertiser. “I will compete with my threeand-a-half-year-old female border collie, North-Hill Tess, and was lucky enough to gain a place on this year’s team.” Meanwhile 14-year-old Tara Foley, who was a Munster champion at the age of 11, will feature on the world-famous BBC programme, ‘One Man and his Dog’. Last Sunday night the Glencar native and her dog Sky featured on the BBC ‘Countryfile’ programme as part of a preview to the famous sheep dog trialling programme.

Popular German travel programme films in Kerry A crew from Hessischer Rundfunk, a national TV station in Germany, has been filming in Kerry and along the Wild Atlantic Way this week – for a popular travel programme called ‘Service: Reisen Die Ratgeber’, which showcases different destinations around the world and offers holiday tips to German travellers. They are here as guests of Tourism Ireland and Fáilte Ireland. The TV crew will produce a 45-minute episode all about Ireland – as well as a series of five short episodes – which will air in early 2020 to more than 500,000 viewers, or potential holidaymakers for Ireland. They’ve been filming at lots of different locations, including Inch Strand and around Slea Head, and the Fahan Beehive Huts. They also did a dolphin and whale-watching tour around Dingle Harbour. They stayed in Dingle Benners Hotel. “Tourism Ireland was delighted to invite this German TV crew to film in Kerry and along the Wild Atlantic Way this week,”

Peter Nash, Tourism Ireland’s Manager for Central Europe, said. “The episode will be seen by more than 500,000 Germans, inspiring them to put Ireland on their holiday ‘wish list’ for 2020. Television and film are recognised as strong influencers for prospective holidaymakers and Tourism Ireland regularly works with TV and production companies in Germany and elsewhere around the world to facilitate the making of travel and lifestyle programmes and films around the island of Ireland.” Germany is the third-largest source of visitors to the island of Ireland and one of the largest outbound travel markets in the world. “In 2018, we welcomed 783,700 German visitors to the island of Ireland. Tourism Ireland has an extensive programme of promotions under way throughout 2019, to continue to grow German visitor numbers and, in particular, to encourage more German holidaymakers to explore our regions and less-visited attractions, during the shoulder and off-season months.”

MENTAL HEALTH: Cathaoirleach Cllr Niall Kelleher, launched Kerry’s second Mental Health and Well-being Fest at Killarney House on Monday. Also included were: Pat O’Brien, Lorraine Bowler, Donagh Hennebry, Deirdre Hegarty, Mairead O’Sullivan. Photo: Valerie O’Sullivan

Countywide events for World Mental Health Day Over 100 events are being arranged at locations across Kerry which focus on and promote the positive mental health and well-being of all citizens in the county. Featuring workshops, seminars, coffee mornings, film screenings and a wide range of activities, the Fest will coincide with the annual World Mental Health Day and runs from October 5 to 19 at numerous locations across the county. Everyone in the county is encouraged to take time out to learn, talk, reflect, and engage with others around the topic of mental health and well-being, and to encourage anyone with mental health issues to reach out and avail of supports and services available. “The programme of events has come together with the support of all the local statutory agencies working together with

the very positive input of community and voluntary groups all over Kerry,” Donagh Hennebry, Resource Officer for Suicide Prevention, Cork-Kerry Community Healthcare with the HSE, said. “Among the highlights of the Fest will be a showing of the film, ‘My Other Life’, a discussion on building resilience, workshops on workplace well-being, parkruns, mindfulness, meditation and awareness sessions and more. Cathaoirleach of Kerry County Council, Cllr Niall Kelleher, said the initiative will build on the positive feedback received for last year’s inaugural event. “This is another very positive collaborative initiative between the HSE and Kerry County Council and will, I hope, encourage everyone in the county to take the opportunity to focus mental health and well-being.” Full details on www.healthykerry.ie.

Night time skincare routine As your skin naturally repairs itself at night, your night time routine should be all about treatment to give your skin what it needs. If your skin is looking dull - exfoliate. If it is irritated - hydrate and protect. To get rid of the day’s grime, dirt, oil and make-up, try double cleansing, which involves using a cleansing oil first to dissolve your make-up and then wash your face again with your regular cleanser. We use a face wash to remove all the excess sebum, dirt and make-up. This leaves your skin fresh and perfectly prepped to absorb your Sothys skincare products. At night, some people also like to layer toner which you’ll see as either mists, essences, beauty waters or hydrating serums. These are infused with different active ingredients. The purpose is mainly to hydrate and nourish skin.

5

Aside from addressing crow’s feet and dark circles, eye creams can also serve to protect your delicate eye area from your other skin care products. Apply using light circular movements around the eye socket, never on the movable part of the eye. Apply before your treatments to protect your eye area against potent ingredients, which could potentially cause irritation. Skin does the bulk of its repairing, restoring and regenerating as we sleep. Use an evening treatment depending on your skin's needs. If your skin is on the dry side, you may want to add a hydrating cream mask or face oil. Both product types are generally mild and can be typically used as often as your skin needs an extra boost of hydration. Night creams are generally thicker and heavier, designed to be absorbed over the course of several hours, creating a protective coating on the skin to prevent water evaporation while you sleep. Sothys Noctelle Vitamin C and AHA infused night cream has amazing results. For more information or to book a free skincare consultation with Jill call 064 6632966.

Corcoran's Furniture & Carpets

Think Corcoran's for your home renovation needs It’s that time of year again when home renovation projects are getting underway. Whether your aim is to warm up the home with a toasty new stove for winter or you’re going all out with an updated kitchen or bathroom transformation, the most important part of planning for your

renovation is making a realistic budget. Then you can price furniture, fixtures and materials and begin to get clarity on what will work with your budget and what won’t. Unsure of which room to begin with? A handy rule of thumb is to make your decision based on how often you use a certain room. Hence kitchens and bathrooms are

often an obvious starting point. Other renovators like to begin with the hallway and work systematically from there. Think methodically about each room in terms of floor, walls, ceiling, lighting and furnishings. Home renovations can be costly, and while it can be tempting to cut corners on some aspects of your refurbishment project, one place you shouldn’t is your flooring or carpets. The last thing you want is to choose something unsuitable only to have to replace it after a few years. Buy flooring/carpets that are high quality and will stand the test of time. You might

have to spend a small bit more upfront initially, but in the long run it will save you money. Corcoran’s Furniture and Carpets have a huge selection of top-quality, durable flooring and carpets in store at a highly competitive price right now. Plus, for all your refurbishment needs you’ll find everything from the bathroom sink to exquisite tiles and bargain-priced kitchen packages. Their entire product range covers sofas, dining, living, bedroom, accessories, curtains, blinds, flooring, bathrooms and tiles, as well as stoves and fireplaces. It’s most certainly worth dropping into for kickstarting your refurbishment plans this autumn.

HEALTH & FITNESS Advice - By Brian Foley Brian is available for advice and fitness consultations, Call 087 403 0894 or email info@activate.ie • www.activate.ie

Does lifting weights make you bulky? “I’m afraid to lift weights in case I get “big and bulky”, that’s something I hear frequently in our complimentary introductory chats here at Activate, and to be fair, it’s down to a plethora of information coming at you, the public. It’s hard to know what’s correct and what’s not! Many people believe that resistance training or lifting weights will make them heavy and bulky. Simply picking up a barbell will not make you huge. Ask anyone with a chiselled physique how long it took them and the answer is years. And most of the time their nutrition, training and lifestyle was specifically geared towards that goal. Put simply, if you want to get “bulky” you have to really focus on that goal and train for that specifically over a number of years. If you are interested in weight training, the fear of getting bulky shouldn’t put you off. There are countless benefits to weight training, beyond filling out your T-shirt sleeves. One of them is getting stronger. Heavy weight training in particular will create a neural adaptation, which means the brain gets better at recruiting muscles to perform the job of lifting the weight. This isn’t about

adding extra muscle fibres, it’s about getting better at using the ones you already have to perform a job – lifting your own bodyweight for a first pull-up, for example. Lifting your kids up, moving furniture, doing tasks like gardening, all examples of weight lifting in real life, that the gym can help you be better at for years to come. Lifting weights creates a better link between the brain and the body. It puts you in control of the most powerful tool you’ll ever own, your own body. Strength training should always form a part of your overall training structure and should, like all forms of training, be varied to ensure you enjoy a full spectrum of training benefits like max strength, strength endurance, speed strength, power….. the list goes on. At Activate we incorporate strength training into our varied program to ensure your body keeps adapting. You keep learning new skills, which keeps your brain and body younger! The benefits of lean mass are so great and, unless you’re training like a bodybuilder, the gains in muscle mass are so small that the weights room really should be your first port of call in the gym, no matter your goals.

Killarney Salmon & Trout Angling Club MAR LOUGHLAN: Last Sunday the club had the great honour of being presented with the Mar Loughlan Shield once again having been the top club on the day against some of Munster's top clubs and anglers. A good turn out of club anglers on the day meant that most areas of the lake were being fished and despite angling set backs such as lines wrapped around propellers and rods breaking, perseverance paid off and some fine catches push us up to top position. The Top five club anglers on the day were 1 Tom Dennehy (also heaviest trout), 2 Gary Fleming, 3 Mick Linehan, 4 Liam Buckley, 5 Gerry Buckley. The Shield will take pride of place at our annual dinner and prize giving on Saturday November 2 in the International Hotel. FIXTURE: This weekend the club fishes in Caragh Lake for the Church Island Cup and next weekend its back on the home water for the annual competition on Lough Lein. This competition always attracts a great turn out and we would encourage all club anglers to wet a line on the day. We are most grateful to all our sponsors for their valued support in making this competition such an annual success. Entries now been taken to any club officer.

GRADUATION: Tara Casey from Muckross Road, Killarney who received her Batchelor of Science Degree with First Class Honours in Sport and Excerise Sciences when she graduated at Limerick University this week pictured with her proud parents Vincent and Bernadette and brother Luke.

SUPERCAR: Ryan Thomas of Coronation Street is welcomed to The Brehon Hotel by Niall Kelleher (Mayor of Kerry) and Sinead McCarthy (General Manager The Brehon Hotel) on Friday night.

13.09.2019

SUPERCARS: An Aston Martin taking part in The Cannonball Ireland run at The Brehon Hotel, Killarney on Friday night in aid of the Irish Cancer Society.

Over €100 million worth of cars were in town as part of the annual Cannonball Ireland Road Trip as the action-packed supercar spectacle rolled into Killarney. The place was full of legendary supercars representing McLaren, Lamborghini, Ferrari, Aston Martin, Porsche, Maserati, Rolls Royce and Bentley amongst many other cars never-before-seen in The Kingdom. Following the official start at Malahide Castle earlier that day, the 200 supercars and crews made their way to The Brehon

Hotel for the first official overnight halt of the three-day event. Spectators got up close and personal with 190 of the finest cars on the planet and mingled freely with some of the celebrity participants including Love Island’s Tom Walker and former Coronation Street star Ryan Thomas. The motoring festival is renowned for its colour and festive atmosphere and many of the participants were in fancy dress including a very realistic looking President Trump, Spiderman, Cat Woman, Wonder

Woman, Batman and The Joker. Organisers say that over 200,000 fans lined the streets all over Ireland for Cannonball, which over the years has raised €1,016,000 for Irish charities. This year, the charity benefactor is the Irish Cancer Society. Mike O’Mahony from Barraduff participated in the run in his Jaguar F Type. Local involvement included Rally of the Lakes Clerk of the Course, Dermot Healy, who acted as an event coordinator. “We were absolutely blown away by the welcome we got in Killarney,” founder Alan Bannon said. “A very special thanks to the Brehon Hotel and The Gleneagle Hotel for their hospitality. Nothing was a problem for them

and they went the extra mile and more. Thanks also to Dermott Healy for his constant help and support both on the day and the lead up to the event. Thanks to An Garda Síochána and thanks to all of the businesses in the town for supporting the event.” And he didn’t forget the spectators for their support. “Finally, I want to personally thank each and all of the thousands of spectators who came to welcome us,” he said. “It was an incredible feeling and everybody talked about the warm welcome, generosity to our charity and remarkable friendliness of the people of Killarney.” Kerry-based car enthusiasts were invited to show their machinery alongside the Cannonballers in the Gleneagle/Brehon Hotel car park. Cars on show included Ken O’Neill’s rare Lancia Delta Integrale and Brian Glover’s Nissan GT-R. The 200 cars left Killarney, in convoy, at 10.30am on Saturday morning and made their way to Sligo for the second overnight halt. Event sponsors included local firms like Ballyseedy Garden Centre in Tralee and Keane’s Jewellers in Killarney.

TV STAR: Tom Walker of 'Love Island' Fame with his grandad Bill Archie is welcomed to Killarney by Mayor of Kerry Niall Kelleher and Sinead McCarthy (General Manager The Brehon Hotel). Photo: Don MacMonagle

FAMILY FUN: Killarney families, Janet, Owen and Jack Breen, Suzanne, Nathan and Molly Moloney and Antoinette O'Shea enjoying Cannonball.

Over €10 million worth of supercars roll into town If you were wandering around the Muckross Road area on Friday evening last you would be forgiven if you believed some sort of a time machine transported you to downtown Monte Carlo.

LOCAL HERO: Barraduff car enthusiast Mike O'Mahony taking part in The Cannonball Ireland run in his Jaguar.

WELCOME: ’Kim Jung-Un' is welcomed to The Brehon Hotel by Mayor of Kerry Niall Kelleher while taking part in The Cannonball Ireland.

Nothing to fear Kerry rattled Dublin two weeks ago. Now it’s time to finish the job, writes Adam Moynihan ALL-IRELAND SFC FINAL REPLAY

_________________________________________________________________________

Kerry v Dublin

Saturday, September 14 at 6pm Croke Park

The emotions are back in check (just about) and we’re ready to do it all again. On Saturday night, either Dublin or Kerry will be celebrating a historic All-Ireland triumph. Well, unless there’s another draw. Stranger things have happened, although to be honest I don’t think we’d be able to take the stress of it all. They’ll have to flip a coin or something. You’d be bate from it. Every game brings its own challenges but Peter Keane and Jim Gavin have some really, really big decisions to make for this replay. It was such a mixed bag for both managers two weeks ago. I suppose the difficulty lies in making the right adjustments to fix the bad without adversely affecting the good. It’s a fine line but both managers will have to walk it tomorrow.

BIG TOM

The question on everyone’s lips in this part of the world is, “what do we do with Tommy Walsh?” The man mountain from Kerins O’Rahilly’s has caused mayhem as a second-half substitute in consecutive games. Should Kerry keep him in reserve and hope for more of the same,

REMATCH: Paul Geaney and his Kerry teammates will be going all out to stop the Drive for Five. Pic: Ramsey Cardy/Sportsfile.

13.09.2019 or does his form merit, or even demand, a starting berth? Walsh is a firm fan favourite and it’s tempting to say, “just throw him in” but Keane and his management team will be weary of the worst-case scenario. What if you start Walsh and Dublin shut Kerry down in the first half, or what if Walsh, now accustomed to the substitute’s role, fails to find his feet as a starter? Then what? Killian Spillane has proven himself to be a great option from the bench but going by the squad for the drawn game, he would be the only alternative in terms of inside forwards. I don’t think you can go into a game of this magnitude with just one scoring forward in reserve. If either Walsh or Spillane do get the nod, Keane would surely consider recalling James O’Donoghue to the 26 (if he wasn’t already thinking of doing so).

MATCH-UPS

By and large, both Keane and Gavin will be pleased with the performances of their man markers a fortnight ago. David Clifford, Paul Geaney, Stephen O’Brien, Con O’Callaghan and Paul Mannion were fairly quiet in terms of scoring output, a testament to the diligent marking jobs done by their direct opponents on the day. Jonny Cooper was tormented by David Clifford in the first half so it would be surprising if he’s tasked with guarding the Fossa youngster again. Michael Fitzsimons made Clifford work very hard when he was switched onto him so that might be the natural choice for Jim Gavin this time out.

NO FEAR

“We left it after us” may have been the refrain in the immediate aftermath of that emotionally draining encounter two weeks ago but I don’t buy into that. The more you think about it, the more reasons there are to be cheerful, and confident, heading up to Dublin for the rematch. Even with 15 men, the reigning champions coughed up so many golden opportunities and on another day, Kerry could have been five points up at half time. Let’s hope that other day is Saturday, September 14. I was relatively confident heading into the first game but I was nearly afraid to say it. This time around I have no fear. And, far more importantly, neither will the players. VERDICT: Kerry for Sam.

“Tomorrow will be a very different game" Former Kerry and Dr Crokes goalkeeper Eamonn Fitzgerald previews the All-Ireland Final replay | By Eamonn Fitzgerald Kerry and Dublin played out a thrilling draw two weeks ago and they will return to Croke Park tomorrow for the replay. Throw-in is at 6pm which is very awkward and expensive for Kerry supporters. The drawn game was a thriller. It had everything. End-to-end stuff, great contests, terrific man-marking, cards, a sending off and a saved penalty as well as the eight minutes of extra time. It will be a very different game tomorrow.

Even though Dean Rock had a last-gasp free to edge in front it would have been a travesty of justice if Dublin had won. They came into the drawn game as runaway favourites and a very young Kerry side was given no chance. The reality was very different. Peter Keane got the match-ups bang on target and so many of the Dublin players struggled. The following players played up to form: Stephen Cluxton, Jack McCaffrey and Dean Rock. Team boss Gavin erred by not moving Jonny Cooper off David Clifford. It was no surprise that

he was red-carded. Keane had more of his players going well. What’s more, the Kerry subs did well, in particular Tommy Walsh who made a big contribution when he came on. He should have come on at half-time. Dublin were able to draw the game with so few players doing well. Contrast that with Peter Keane who had 13 players going well. Will they be able to repeat those performances tomorrow? Kerry could have scored four goals but the only one to beat Cluxton was Spillane with that late goal which brought Kerry right back into contention. Seán O’Shea was magnificent in general play and from frees, shooting 10 fabulous points. He gave McCarthy a torrid time. David Clifford also did well. He did hit four wides but he scored two points and engineered the penalty and the cards which led to Dublin getting a man sent off.

CHANGES

Dublin will ring in the changes. I think Micheal Darragh McCauley, John Small, and David Byrne will be dropped to the bench with Jonny Cooper moving to the half-back line. They will welcome Cian O’Sullivan back as a sweeper if he has recovered from injury. I foresee no changes on the Kerry starting 15 with a move back to half-back for Gavin White. Good displays tomorrow will copper fasten the All-Star selection. Presuming that they play well, I expect the following All-Stars for Dublin: Stephen Cluxton, Jack McCaffrey, Dean Rock, Paul Mannion and possibly Brian Howard. For Kerry I expect Seán O’Shea, Stephen O’Brien and David Moran. Tom O’Sullivan needs a big game to get in. David Clifford may have to wait until next year. VERDICT: DUBLIN Everyone in Kerry GAA was saddened to hear of the passing of Dermot Moynihan of Kilcummin earlier this week. He was a staunch supporter of everything GAA and he will be missed in the press box in Fitzgerald Stadium on big match days, as well as at his much-loved Kilcummin GAA. | By Adam Moynihan

How did a Kenyan international footballer with 25 caps end up in the blue of Killarney Athletic? Teammate Adam Moynihan sat down with Paul Kiongera to find out When I first heard that Triona Sheehy, a teacher from Killarney, was going out with a professional footballer in Kenya, I did what any self-respecting journalist would do. I googled him. Paul Mungai Kiongera immediately passed the acid test: he had a Wikipedia page. That’s all the verification I needed. He must be the real deal. Then I glanced at the side panel to check out his career stats. The 30-year-old had scored 50 league goals in 110 games for Kenyan Premier League clubs KCB, Gor Mahia, AFC Leopards and Ushuru, as well as two in nine during a short stint with Simba in Tanzania. But then came the kicker. He had caps for Kenya. He was definitely the real deal. Fast-forward to approximately one month ago when I got an Instagram DM from Triona telling me that her boyfriend was coming down to train with Killarney Athletic. The Killarney woman, who had been helping her father Eddie with his charity in Embulbul near Nairobi, had just relocated to Ireland with Paul and Paul was keen to play a bit of ball. “Will you mind him?” she asked. When training rolled around on Wednesday night, I quickly discovered that Paul didn’t need much minding. But how had this all come to pass? How did an international footballer from East Africa wind up playing with us, a bunch of amateurs, on a cold and damp August evening in Killarney?

THE BOY FROM WEBUYE

It’s certainly a far cry from the balmy West Kenyan town of Webuye, where a young Kiongera and his friends

13.09.2019 honed their soccer skills with a makeshift football they had carefully constructed from discarded paper. Speaking to me at the Killarney Advertiser offices this week, Paul said he has happy memories of his childhood and playing football, though he never dreamed he would make it as a professional. “It was a carefree environment. We used to play outside, all day every day, kicking the ball. We started playing football when we were young because it was the only sport that was accessible. Football was always a big part of my life. “At first I played it for fun. Even in primary school and high school I played for fun. Then towards my last two years in high school, my teachers and my coach started saying that I could make a good player. Then I started getting serious with it.” Kiongera signed his first pro contract with Ushuru FC (known at the time as Kenya Revenue Authority) but just six months later he was snapped up by Kenya Commercial Bank, who handed him his Premier League debut in 2010. He would go on to score 18 goals in 32 games for The Bankers, an impressive return that led to a loan move to Gor Mahia. Kiongera scored seven goals in 21 games as the Kenyan giants captured their 13th league title in 2013.

NATIONAL TEAM

His fine form at club level also caught the attention of the Kenya manager and he made his debut for his country in 2012. Getting the call from the national team was a proud moment for Paul and his family, although (like every other international footballer before him) he admits to not believing the voice on the other end of the line. “For my first senior cap, I had played a league game on Saturday and on Sunday I was at home resting. My phone rang and it was the national team coach (Vince Ombiji). At first I didn’t believe it; I thought maybe one of my teammates was kidding me or something. So I talked to the coach and I had to call him again to confirm. “Everyone was happy for me. It’s a dream to play for your country.” He would go on to make 25 appearances for the Harambee Stars, lining out alongside elite players like Victor Wanyama of Tottenham and Wanyama’s older brother McDonald Mariga, the former Inter Milan defensive midfielder who made history in 2010 by becoming the first Kenyan to play in the Champions League. Kiongera came head-to-head with some big names on international duty, chief amongst them Liverpool and Egypt star Mo Salah. In a match against Senegal, he also came up against Salah’s Liverpool teammate Sadio Mané and former Newcastle strikers Demba Ba and Papiss Demba Cissé.

BUNDESLIGA

While at Gor Mahia, Kiongera was linked with a massive $200,000 move to German Bundesliga outfit Borussia Mönchengladbach but, unfortunately, a thigh injury put paid to any potential move to Europe. “Had I not sustained that thigh injury, I think the transfer to Borussia Mönchengladbach would have happened. The injuries slowed me down. I started to have doubts, and I lost a bit of pace. They had a major impact.” Not many Kenyan footballers are household names in this part of the world but Kiongera is adamant that there is plenty of untapped talent in his homeland. However, financial limitations and the pigeonholing of African footballers make things difficult for Kenyans who dream of following in Wanyama’s footsteps. “The issue is: how do the players get to Europe?” Kiongera says. “That’s the major challenge. Most of the players can’t afford it. Even when they’re playing professionally, they don’t earn big money. But honestly, there is a lot of talent in Kenya. “Unfortunately in Kenya we are known for running! When people see that you’re an African player, they expect you to be strong and fast. That’s the expectation. With football, it’s your decision-making that matters. If you are fast with your decision-making, then you are fast. You can run fast, be physical but if your decisions are slow, then you are slow as well.” That last observation is telling when it comes to analysing Kiongera as a footballer. The No. 10 certainly isn’t lacking when it comes to athleticism but his real strengths come to the fore when the ball is at his feet. Let’s put it this way, he’s currently adapting to the Irish style of play. “I’ve noticed here that players try to find a solution quickly, try to go long, which is different. In Kenya we love short passing and we don’t hold the ball, but I’ve noticed here that people love dribbling. So it’s quite different.” When I mention that Irish football is known for its tough tackling, his eyes widen. “I’ve noticed with the tackling, yeah. They are quite aggressive. At first I was scared but I’m getting used to it.” Apart from having to adjust to the tactics and the cooler climate (“when you wrap up properly, it’s not a problem”), Paul has had little difficulty finding his feet in Kerry, something he attributes to the warmth of the locals. “I was surprised the way people are very friendly. I wasn’t expecting it because it’s different in Africa. When you are walking on the road, somebody will say ‘hi’. You see people chatting and you think that they know each other but no, they are just chatting. So yeah, I’m happy to be here because people are friendly.”

TOP FLIGHT: Kiongera in action for Kenyan Premier League side KCB in 2015.

The ‘céad míle fáilte’ afforded to Kiongera in Killarney is a million miles from the racist abuse African footballers, and footballers of African descent, are subjected to in the top leagues in England, Italy and Russia. Instances of racial abuse, both online and at matches, are frequently documented in the media but, interestingly, the adopted Kerryman believes that the culprits shouldn’t be given the oxygen of press coverage. “It’s unfortunate that there are people who are still racist. I don’t understand how you think you are superior to a fellow human being; we are all human beings. “Sometimes the players need to be strong and ignore it and continue doing what they are doing. If fans are being racist towards you, it’s because something you are doing is good. They are trying to slow you down. I also think that the media shouldn’t give it so much coverage. They shouldn’t give the racists publicity.”

SETTLING IN

As for his own playing career, Kiongera says he’s currently enjoying his time with Killarney Athletic. “The lads are good. They’re welcoming and they’re friendly. In Kenya when you move to a different team, people have a mentality that you’re there to take their position. Here the lads have tried to help me settle in.”

And what about the standard? “There are some very good players,” Paul says, although he could hardly say otherwise when he’s staring me, his teammate, straight in the face. “I would say that the standard is not ‘top’ standard but you understand that it’s amateur. People don’t get to train every day, just twice a week or three times a week. It’s much better than the amateur standard in Kenya.” Kiongera had to sit out Athletic’s season opener last weekend as he is currently awaiting international clearance to play in the Kerry District League. The Blues, who won the double as recently as 2017 but finished mid-table last season, defeated AC Athletic 4-3 in the League Cup on Sunday thanks in part to a hat-trick from Tony Brosnan. Manager Stuart Templeman is optimistic that the paperwork will be sorted out in due course and their Kenyan international will be available for selection sooner rather than later. Questions surrounding the eligibility of international players led to a series of messy appeals in last season’s FAI Junior Cup so Athletic officials want to be certain that everything is above board before handing Kiongera his debut. If (and hopefully when) Kiongera does play for Athletic, he will arguably become the highest profile player to ever line out in the Kerry District League. And he has the Wikipedia page to prove it.

“This club should be in the Super League – that’s the goal” Ahead of next weekend’s National League opener, Adam Moynihan chats to Scotts Lakers head coach Shane McCarthy about the season ahead The season tips off next weekend away to the Limerick Celtics. What’s the mood like in the camp? It’s a mood of excitement at the moment. The boys are getting sick of looking at each other at training so they’re looking forward to seeing someone else on the court against them. They’re all excited. The club have made a number of new signings. Are you happy with the business you’ve done over the summer? Yeah, really happy. Victor Martínez, our Spanish guy, is only 20 and the fans are going to love him. He’s a serious talent. He comes from a professional background in Spain. Toby (Christensen) picked up a knock in his third session with us but he has pedigree. He had seven years in the States. And Aaron (Jackson) is talented, he’s exciting and he’s tough. I think he’s going to be a fan favourite. Aaron has just arrived from the States, is that right? He only got into the country last Friday morning. He travelled for 26 or 27 hours and we told him he didn’t need to train Friday evening, but he trained. He was anxious to get started.

Which local players are likely to feature this season? We obviously have Mark Greene. I played with him last season and he really shocked me; I didn’t think he was as good as he is! Andy Fitzgerald is big and he’s going to have a major role to play. Séamus Brosnan is tough and he’ll have a huge role as well. You’ve also brought in a couple of Irish players… Yeah we’ve signed Carlton Cuff from Blue Demons. He was one of the best defenders in the Super League so he’s going to bring that defensive mindset down to Killarney. Brian O’Neill is another one. I played with Brian for years and he’s a deadeye three-point shooter. We played a preseason game last week and it was Brian’s first game in 12 months. He had 18 points, all threes. We’re a lot deeper this year than we were last year. As you mentioned there, you were playing up until last season. Is this your first job as a head coach? Yeah, it’s my first time as a head coach -

it’s my first year not playing at all. I was adamant that I just wanted to coach this year. I’ve been an assistant in the Super League with Blue Demons and I was assistant player/coach last year. So look, I’m excited about it. What are the biggest challenges when it comes to coaching a team at this level? Last year you just had to make sure you got into the playoffs. This year it’s an allout league (with the top two from each conference making the semi-finals) so literally every game is going to be a cup final for me. We won’t look beyond the next game. Another thing is keeping everyone happy and healthy because we have a couple of double-header weekends. One weekend we play Ballincollig at 4pm in Cork and we play Neptune 23 hours later at home in Killarney. We’ve got to keep guys fresh and that’s going to be a challenge. What were the Lakers’ strengths and weaknesses last season? Last year, Cormac (O’Donoghue) did a phenomenal job. I’d like to say that. Seán O’Brien, our American, was a super, super player but this year we’ll have Aaron who can play the point and also post up and do a bit of everything. Defensive-

ly last year we gave up way too many points. You’re not going to win anything at this level giving up 80 or 90 points against bad teams. I thought that was our biggest weakness. We played Ballincollig at home and scored 104 points, and lost. You can’t do that. What style of play will your Lakers be adopting? This year, with the depth we have, we’re going to push the ball at every opportunity. We’re going to run, run, run. I’d be quite happy if we go through a whole game and don’t run a play. And defensively we’re going to be in people’s faces. They’re going to come out of the game knowing that they’ve played us. I think Carlton is going to bring a lot of that, and Aaron as well. He plays really tough. Do you think the club is in good shape generally speaking? St Paul’s have 450 kids playing juvenile. There’s not a club in the country that has that amount of players, I would say. We play in the Aura, which is one of the best arenas in the country. We get the biggest crowds at any Super League or National League games. St Paul’s are in such a good place it’s ridiculous. The club is in a massive, massive position and we just have to build on it now. Are there any young players ready to make the breakthrough? Jamie O’Sullivan is on our panel this year and I think Killarney has a superstar on its hands if he realises how good he is. I’m really tough on Jamie but I’m tough because I know he can be a serious player. He’s 6’4” at 16 years of age. He’s holding his own at training with pros. In my eyes, he should be on Irish panels. How big a role can the supporters play this season? I was blown away by the crowds last season. They were phenomenal. Already this season, the backing from the fans and the sponsors has been great and I want to thank them for that. But it’s the team’s job to keep the fans happy. We have to put on a show and make sure that we’re winning. I think Aaron is going to be really exciting for the team in that regard. He’ll bring that bounce. What are your goals for the year? Is promotion to the Super League a realistic aim? This year we’re going after the cups and we’re going after the league. The main thing is that we’re going all out for promotion. This club should be in the Super League. That’s the goal.

F leming on Wexford podium

Kilcummin co-driver Damien Fleming took a well-deserved second overall on last weekend’s Wexford Rally alongside Stephen McCann in their Ford Fiesta. The pair have previously won the Kerry Winter Rally on numerous occasions but Wexford was only their second time working together this season. They were forced to finish last month’s Galway Summer Rally under Rally2 rules so a result in Wexford was well overdue. “We went there with a lot of set-up issues after Galway,” Fleming said. “But we worked hard with the car and found a happy medium, and the times started to come from there. Finishing second overall was the icing on the cake.” UPHILL: Killarney ’s Marcus Treacy in action earlier this year on the climb that will be used for the National Hillclimb Championships. Castleisland set for National Hillclimb Championships Kerry will host the National Cycling Hillclimb Championships on September 29, the first time the event will take place in the county since 2013. The national event will take place on the county hillclimb course near Crag Cave in Castleisland and will be organised by Tralee Manor West Cycling Club. The last time Kerry hosted this prestigious competition was six years ago when the same club used the Short Mountain course outside Tralee. “It is always a great tip of the hat to get asked to run a national event,” club secretary Stephen Griffin told the Killarney Advertiser. “It may mean more work for the club but it's worth it to get the best riders in the country; the extra work is a small price to pay.”

The course runs between the Crag Cave road to its junction with the main Castleisland to Limerick road. Spectators are welcome. “The top riders will want to do it [the course] in under four minutes,” added Griffin. “Go to the top of the climb and you will see them really empty the tank.” Defending champion Darrell Moore from Team Caldwell Omagh is chasing a hattrick of national titles but local riders like county hillclimb champion Conor Kissane, his Killarney Cycling Club colleague Marcus Treacy and Cormac Daly of Tralee Manor West will have first-hand knowledge of the course as it was used during this season’s county hillclimb league on a number of occasions. The event will mark the end of the road cycling season in Kerry.

Sunday’s Clare Rally

There is plenty of local interest in this Sunday’s Clare Rally. The top seed in the junior category is Aghadoe’s John McCarthy in his Honda Civic. Glenflesk’s Denis Hickey and Seán Nolan are another local

crew entered in an Escort. Mike Quinn has been ruled out of contention for this weekend’s event following an engine failure in the Subaru Impreza World Rally Car he was due to use. | Marshals for Clare Rally Killarney and District Motor Club marshals should report to Minihane’s Centra in Corofin at 9am on Sunday morning. The club contact is Darren McCormick on 083 8280693. | Killarney Historic Rally Plans are coming together for the November 30 Rentokil Initial Killarney Historic Rally. Meetings continue at the Gleneagle Hotel every Tuesday Night at 8pm and anyone interested in getting involved in the rally is welcome to attend. Killarney and District Motor Club plan to launch the event on November 3. A recent route survey revealed that a new version of Moll’s Gap will feature alongside old favourites like Ballaghbeama and Shanara.

Sheffield United star Egan backs Kerry to beat the Dubs There has been a lot of debate about the timing of the All-Ireland football final replay. Set for 6pm on Saturday, Kerry’s title-decider against Dublin does not really suit a working person based in Kerry. TV schedules, like the live horseracing from Leopardstown and the pre-set ladies final on Sunday, are the official reasons behind the late throw in. However, one man who will very thankful of TV schedules is Republic of Ireland and Sheffield United star John Egan. Egan is the son of the late John Sr, a sixtime All-Ireland winner and captain on the fateful day in 1982 when Kerry lost its bid for five-in-a-row, this same day that Séamus Derby scored that famous last minute goal for Offaly. Egan Jr grew up in Cork where his father was a guard. He was an all-rounder when it came sport, playing hurling and Gaelic football with Bishopstown and soccer at Kennedy Cup level with Cork. In 2011 he was offered a professional contract with Sunderland in England and made his decision to park the GAA and head off across the water. Fast-forward eight years and after spells with Crystal Palace and Bradford City, amongst others, he is now a regular feature on the Sheffield United squad and works his trade in the Premier League. He has also forced his way into Mick McCa-

rthy’s Irish squad and he even captained the boys in green in Tuesday night’s friendly against Bulgaria. That does not mean he has lost his love of the GAA and he has a especial fondness for Kerry given his late father’s hero status in the county. He was in Croke Park two weeks ago for the drawn game but cannot make tomorrow’s replay as Sheffield United are due to play Southampton at 3pm. The game will be just over in time for the 6pm throw in at Croke Park. “Kerry have won so many All-Irelands and they still can’t get 1982 out of their heads,” he told the Irish Examiner recently.“So, yeah, in any Kerry person’s mind, deep down, they don’t want Dublin doing the five-in-a-row.

THE POWER OF ADVERTISING “My late father, Jackie Healy-Rae, always advertised his weekly Saturday clinic in Scotts Hotel at 3pm in the Killarney Advertiser. I continued this tradition since 2011 as I also appreciate the power of local advertising. To be a national politician, you have to be elected locally. The local message is more important than any other media outlet for me. I really believe the people appreciate, so much, the local news, pictures, death notices and information in our local advertiser and nothing could replace it. Small businesses can afford local advertising as it comes within their budget. When the advertiser comes out, there are literally people waiting at shops and outlets to pick it up. This proves how important it is in our community. The Killarney Advertiser has been in existence since 1973, 46 years. I am quite confident that despite the changes in modern technology, the Killarney Advertiser will proudly celebrate its 100th anniversary in 54 years and I would like to be around for the celebrations”

Michael Healy-Rae

Independent TD for Kerry

“We are proud and privileged to say that we have worked with the Killarney Advertiser since its inception. They offer a powerful blend of creative and collaborative adverts that exceed expectations. More importantly, it is always a pleasure to work with the team. Killarney Advertiser is a company on point with a highly-developed sense of community and social responsibility. Thank you from all at O’Leary’s Expert Electrical”
