Kilcummin toxic dumping putting water network at risk Illegal dumping in the Kilcummin area has reached a new level of irresponsibility after hundreds of florescent lighting tubes were found discarded in a secluded area this week. | By Sean Moriarty

Dumping has been an on-going issue for the people of Kilcummin for many years but the latest discovery could cause serious environmental damage as the tubes contain mercury and would have a devastating effect on the water supply network. The tubes were discovered by local Councillor Marie Moloney in Knocklebede, a back road between Kilcummin and Scartaglin, in an area known locally as ‘The Leaps’. She said she was going to do everything possible to identify the perpetrators. “This is someone with local knowledge,
very few people use this road, or need to use this road,” she said. “The lights have a Stock Keeping Unit number, so the brand, the supplier and place of sale will be identifiable. Household dumping is bad enough but this is a new low – and there is a big ‘No Dumping’ sign within feet of where it was dumped. It is, obviously, from a large scale renovation of a building and the people who dumped this knew what they were dealing with and the risks involved.” Mercury is extremely toxic and must be handled with care. In cases of spills involving mercury from fluorescent light bulbs, specific cleaning procedures are used to avoid exposure and to contain the spill. Broken light bulbs emit a mercury dust adding to the environmental risk caused by such dumping and Kerry County Council will need to dispatch a specialised cleaning unit to the site to remove the tubes and contain the possible spread of mercury into the eco-system.
Next is Netflix for Jessie Buckley Killarney star Jessie Buckley will take the lead role in Netflix’s new comedy horror ‘I’m Thinking of Ending Things’ from September 4. Buckley plays the adorable girlfriend of Jake, and when he takes her home to meet the folks, things start to get a little bit weird and life gets extremely twisted. Director Charley Kaufman, whose previous works include Being John Malkovich and Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind recruited Buckley following a recommendation from a friend. “It was one of those things where you see somebody who’s not yet known to you, and you go, ‘Oh my God, I have to get this person’, ” he said. “She’s present with whatever is happening. Whatever she does, it’s real. It happens in reaction to the thing that she’s given.” The talented actress is also currently starring in 'The Woman in White' a five-part BBC television adaptation of the 1860 sensation novel of the same name by Wilkie Collins on the RTÉ Player.
Amy's creative video goes viral with 10m views | By Michelle Crean A 17-year-old Killarney girl - who has only been active on social media App TikTok for two months - was this week stunned to get 10m views on her video as well as a comment from a global beauty influencer. Yesterday afternoon (Thursday), Amy Cronin, who is preparing to go into Leaving Cert in Killarney Community College, was left speechless when the creative make-up video she posted late on Tuesday night hit 10m views and received 2.6m likes. Her stunning face design is a take on American Internet personality, beauty YouTuber and make-up artist James Charles who has 21.6m followers worldwide. And for Amy, the comment was something that she could have only dreamed of. "Okay well I noticed you and you killed it but can we please pretend like I didn't so you can keep creating looks?" James Charles said.
Amy says when she heard he commented on her personal post she thought it was a joke at first as it's almost impossible that he can find her out of his 21.6m followers. "I made the video Monday night, it took me two and a half hours to do the makeup," Amy, daughter of Joe and Lorraine, told the Killarney Advertiser yesterday (Thursday). "I saved it in my drafts and posted it late on Tuesday night before I went to bed and it had about 900 views. Usually I average 1000. I woke up and I was after getting about 20k. I was shocked and saying "Oh my God". There was a lot of comments and the views just kept going up and up. Then I was on TikTok live and people were saying James Charles commented. I didn't know what to say I was speechless." Now Amy is hoping to become a makeup artist herself and aims to have his success. "He has a show called 'Instant Influencer' and people are telling me to audition as I want to be a make-up artist."

Four days of quality racing Racing returns to Killarney next week - but again it'll be behind closed doors - due to the current restrictions. | By Michelle Crean From Wednesday next, August 19 to Saturday 22, racing continues with strict protocols in place overseen by Horse Racing Ireland (HRI) and the Irish Horseracing Regulatory Board (IHRB), Irish racing’s governing bodies. “We are all geared up and ready to go for our August racing festival which again is being held behind closed doors,” Racing Manager Philip O’Brien said. “Unfortunately for us and all our loyal patrons that come racing to Killarney every year, it is becoming an all too familiar sight in Ire-
land and the world but hopefully this will not be the case in the future. We are in our final preparations and are looking forward to four great days of quality racing." He added that he'd like to give special thanks to all the staff that have worked extremely hard in having the track in amazing condition through these difficult times. "Finally my sincere thanks and gratitude to all our sponsors that have supported us through this period and hopefully it won’t be long until we are welcoming everyone back again.”

Killarney has been extremely busy in recent weeks with thousands of people heeding advice to holiday at home instead of travelling overseas and, as a result, the town has enhanced its reputation as Ireland’s premier visitor destination. With a few short weeks to go before the schools and colleges are scheduled to reopen, Killarney Chamber of Tourism and Commerce has asked everybody to continue to behave in a responsible manner in terms of implementing COVID-19 restrictions and to make one final push to ensure everybody can finish the holiday season in a safe manner. “Our thoughts are very much with the businesses and the people of Kildare, Offaly and Laois who have had to reintroduce restrictions,” Chamber President, Paul Sherry, said. “It just goes to show other locations, like Killarney, how fortunate we are and we would like to thank everybody – people of all ages – for being so responsible and for closely following recommended public health guidelines.” The Chamber has encouraged everybody

to make one final push to ensure everybody’s safety, and Mr Sherry asked all businesses to keep the momentum going and to continue to enforce social distancing, face covering and other public health guidelines as recommended by the authorities. “The feedback we are getting is that Killarney is playing a blinder and that visitors have been hugely impressed by the standards businesses have introduced and the measures they have taken to keep everybody safe. A few weeks from now, when the holiday season winds down, we will all be doing our best to adjust to what is being described as a new normal and, hopefully, we can continue to reflect on a job well done in ensuring everybody was kept as safe as possible when they were in our company.”
Belfast cataract service back up and running | By Michelle Crean Cataract procedures in Belfast have resumed five months since the bus stopped travelling due to COVID restrictions. This week, TD Danny Healy-Rae said that he's delighted that the buses are back bringing patients to have their cataracts removed to avoid the long waiting lists in the south. The consultation and procedure takes place at the Kings Bridge Private Hospital in Belfast under the Cross Border Directive with most of the cost refunded afterwards by the HSE. These buses have been organised since November 2017.
“The first two trips since lockdown on August 1 and 8 have been successful and I look forward to the next bus on August 15. There will be another bus travelling in September and the date is yet to be confirmed.” Those travelling on the bus now need to have a COVID test done before travel which is free of charge. Everything is arranged for the trip, COVID test is booked, return bus from Kerry to Belfast with O‘Callaghan’s Coaches Killarney, overnight hotel accommodation and transfer from the hotel to the hospital. “If anybody with cataract problems is interested in travelling for the procedure they can contact Danny Healy-Rae on 064 6685315, 087 9975419 or 087 2316055.

Tributes paid to Kilcummin set dancer
The Kilcummin branch of Comhaltas Ceoltóirí Eireann has paid tribute to Margaret O’Connor, one of its longest serving members, who died this week.
Margaret, who was late of Kilbrean and Tournanough, was a member of the Kilcummin branch since the 1990s. She passed away on Sunday last, August 9. A talented set dancer, she joined the senior set dancing group where, along with her fellow dancers, enjoyed great success at County, Munster and All-Ireland competitions. While the competitions were taken seriously it was the social aspect of it that she enjoyed most and the craic and banter that the group enjoyed on their trips. With Margaret’s young family growing up it was only a matter of time before they took up dancing and she was always very proud of their success. It was a familiar sight to see Margaret and the girls heading off to dance in a competition with her husband Tom providing the transport for Kilcummin Comhaltas. “Margaret will be sadly missed by all who knew her and fond memories of our exploits up and down the country and the trips to Manchester for the dancing competitions will be recalled in the months ahead,” said PRO Derek O’Leary. “Kilcummin Comhaltas extend sincere sympathy to her husband Tom, daugh-

She is also missed by her sisters Sheila (Murphy) and Maryann (Tarrant), and brothers Michael, Connie and Jimmy. She was predeceased by her grandchildren Rob and Róisín, and her brothers Johnny and Peter.
Christ, The Prince of Peace Church in Fossa has revealed plans to extend and the renovate the church. Planning permission has been granted to build a new extension on the eastern side of the church to match the existing western extension where the current Sacristy is based. The extension will include a new toilet block and additional storage space and will allow for further expansion of the existing Sacristy. The 43-year-old building will also get a new roof. Plans are in place to replace a disused sta-
ble on the church grounds and convert that into a new office building. Construction is expected to start in January and will be completed in time for Easter Sunday which falls on April 4 next year. “We are looking ahead to a time when Fossa will continue to be a vibrant parish,” Fossa Pastoral Chairman Billy Mangan told the Killarney Advertiser. A fundraising drive will be announced in the coming weeks and the plans are on display within the church. Meanwhile, Fr Niall Geaney has taken over as parish priest in Fossa. He replaces the retiring Canon Tom Looney after being transferred from Our Lady and St Brendan’s Parish in Tralee.
"Cluttered street space will have negative effect" | By Sean Moriarty A long-serving councillor has warned that the temporary footpath widening, put in place to allow social-distancing, is a covert way to extend pedestrianisation in Killarney. In July, to allow the town centre reopen following the national shut down, the council extended the width of footpaths in several town centre locations. Cllr Donal Grady says he is at odds with the Council’s decision. The entire project is supposed to be a temporary arrangement to allow social distancing while there is still a threat of COVID-19 in the country. “The town will be desecrated,” he told
the Killarney Advertiser. “It is OK now, we have plenty of visitors around, but mark my words, come September, when the season is over, the town centre will be dead.” However, these ’temporary’ works have been installed in such a fashion that it would require a lot of money and work to restore them to pre-social distancing times. The restoration works would involve breaking out new tarmac and kerbing, and the streets would then need full resurfacing. The widened footpaths have been decorated with large flower paths, effectively, reducing the width of the path to their previous size and some wider pavements are now being used as parking bays for motorcycles. “It is a way of sneaking in pedestrianisation,” he
CONCERN: Cllr Donal Grady fears temporary measures by the Council will lead to long-term pedestrianisation of Killarney town centre. Photo: Michelle Crean
added. “The elected councillors were not consulted. We had no say in the matter. This is going to kill the town centre." Plunkett St has been closed to traffic since early July. The town centre street had a long-running arrangement where it is pedestrianised every day between the hours of 7pm and 7am. This has been
further extended to 24hrs – until September. While some elected members are pushing to increase pedestrianisation on the streets and to other areas in the town centre, Mr O’Grady is amongst those against the idea stating that businesses are suffering and will bring the issue up again at next month’s Killarney Municipal District meeting.

NEWS IN CONVERSATION 14
14.8.2020
This week journalist with the Killarney Advertiser Sean Moriarty is 'In Conversation' with local musician Liam O'Connor about the music industry, his creativity during lockdown and future projects.
Accordion legend Liam O’Connor revels in lockdown creativity | By Sean Moriarty Local musician Liam O’Connor turned lockdown into one of his most creative periods to date. Like all musicians, he found himself out of work in March and believes he won’t return to live performing until late this year if not early next year. Named last year as 'Ireland’s Most influential Accordion Player' at the Irish Entertainment Awards, Liam enjoys a hectic schedule - something that did not change over the last four months despite being unable to play live. His last gig, alongside Dermot Kennedy and special guest Irish rugby coach Joe Schmidt, was the annual St Brendan’s College concert on March 11. The very next day the country went into shutdown - but instead of feeling sorry for himself, he turned his attention to several projects that had been put on the long-finger as he was previously too busy. “It was no harm to get out of the rat race,” he told the Killarney Advertiser. “Lockdown became a creative time.” Lian O’Connor has put the finishing touches into an album with the RTE
Concert Symphony Orchestra which he hopes will be released later this year. “This was a project that fell by the wayside but I am glad to say we are putting the finishing touches to it now,” he said. He also hopes to release a single with a song he previously recorded with Boy George. ‘Am I Losing Control’ featured on Liam’s first album ‘Tico Mystico’ which was released in 2010 but the collaboration with Boy George has never been released as a single. “It has been a creative time for me – I have been fine tuning stuff,” he added. The work was recently remastered at London’s famous Abbey Road Studio where The Beatles famously recorded their 'Abbey Road’ album that gave the studio its name – it was previously known as the blander EMI Recording Studio. “All of my albums have now been remastered at Abbey Road,” he said. “It is an amazing place to work, and you get to meet some very talented people there. Of course I could have got them remastered locally - why go to Abbey Road? Why not?” If that wasn’t enough he has also taken on a new job as a music educator. He has

joined the Government’s Music Generation programme, a scheme backed by Bono and U2 to open music education to everyone regardless of background or status. He will start with the Kerry Education and Training Board, as music teacher/educator in September. His usual busy schedule at this time of the year would include weddings, pub gigs and a few nights a week performing at Celtic Steps at Killarney Racecourse. As he is registered for tax purposes, he was able to avail of the Government’s COVID-19 Pandemic Unemployment Payment of €350 per week for the dura-
tion of the shutdown. “I am thankful that for the first time ever the Government were able to put money in the pockets of the self-employed who hit bad times,” he said. “Not many people would say it but I think Leo Varadkar, Simon Coveney and Simon Harris did a very good job.” An advocate of mental health well-being Liam has shown that even in the darkest times, creativity continues and life can be very busy even when there is nothing happening. “I am a total believer in the power of the positive mind,” he said.
Kilcummin locals fear new road will be ripped up again | By Sean Moriarty Locals in Kilcummin fear that their new and long-awaited road will be ripped up again when Irish Water complete the much-awaited Kilcummin Sewage Scheme. Earlier this year Irish Water reneged on a long-term promise to deliver the scheme and announced that it’s to delay plans for the €2.3m sewerage scheme until at least 2022. Residents are waiting the best part of 20 years for the scheme and Irish Water had previously committed to starting the project in January of this year. The reversal of this decision, which was relayed to the elected members of Killarney Municipal District in March, caused widespread anger. Previously, the issue divided the mem-
WARNING: Irish Water have been warned to restore the road to an 'as new' condition when it eventually tackles the long-awaited Kilcummin Sewage Scheme
bers, some wanted to press ahead with a badly needed €360,000 road repair project but others were calling for the road works to be delayed to allow Irish Water complete the scheme and avoid further restoration costs. The March bombshell united the chamber and they voted, unanimously, to press ahead with the roadworks and cross charge Irish Water for the subse-
quent repairs once the water body completed its programme of works. However, with the road works completed this week, which has been welcomed by residents and businesses in the area, they remain concerned that the new road will be ripped up again when the sewage scheme goes ahead in two years’ time – assuming Irish Water does not change its plans again.
Local Labour councillor Marie Moloney is calling for Kerry County Council’s executive to ensure Irish Water leave the new road exactly how they found it. It is likely that the restoration works will add to the cost of the already much-delayed scheme. “I have sought assurances from the [Kerry County Council’s] director of services that the road will be left as Irish Water get it,” Cllr Moloney told the Killarney Advertiser. “We won’t be accepting patchwork.” As well as road surfacing and drainage works along the Coolcorcoran to Inchicullane stretch, additional works were completed at a concealed junction along the way. Each of the elected members of the Killarney Municipal District contributed to this work from their personal allocation.

The Firies man, who lost his leg in a construction accident in 2018, has strong family ties to County Meath. His wife Ruth is from the Royal County and when they returned to Ireland after a spell in London Seamus played football with the local Seneschalstown GAA Club before eventually settling in Seamus’s home village of Firies. The participants will raise also money for the Marie Keating Foundation. The group, who have been running the Ring of Kerry run since 2011, will leave the Meath town on Wednesday next, August 19 and drive their vintage tractors to Killarney. Local man Tony Wharton is taking his 50-year-old John Deere tractor to Nobber in time for the start and will participate in the entire run with support from Barleymount’s Pat O’Brien who will drive a back-up vehicle. The fleet is expected in Killarney around
2.30pm on Friday and will parade through the town. They will be joined by between 25 and 30 members of Killarney Valley Classic and Vintage Club (KVCVC) on arrival in Kerry and the local members will also participate in Saturday’s Ring of Kerry run. The group will overnight in Fossa and the participating tractors will be on display at Tom Wharton’s farm in Fossa. “Seamus has been through a hard time and deserves everything we can do to support him,” Mr Wharton told the Killarney Advertiser. “It was my idea to include a local charity and the Nobber Club agreed because it is also local to them. They have been coming here since 2011 and have left a nice few Euros in the locality.” On Saturday, the convoy will complete the Ring of Kerry run, via the Gap of Dunloe and the finish line in Fossa before returning to Nobber on Monday morning. The group will have driven over one thousand kilimetres by the time they return to Meath on Wednesday August 26.
climbing almost 12,000 feet up five mountains in five days for charity - and it's all in memory of local man Tom Griffin who died at the young age of just 52 years.
Tom's daughter Laura Griffin, her boyfriend Luke Stuart-Mills, and aunt Denise Buckley decided to take on the mammoth challenge 'Following Tom': Memorial Charity Fundraiser as a tribute to him as he was an avid outdoors-man, who loved to walk, hike, swim, and generally adventure in his time off. Sadly Tom died after having a haemorrhage while kite-surfing on his holidays in Portugal in June last year. On Monday Laura and crew began their first climb up Mangerton Mountain, one of her dad's favourite mountains, followed by Torc on Tuesday. On Wednesday they planned to climb Tomies, but due to difficulties accessing it, they instead climbed just over the equivalent height on Purple Mountain. Yesterday (Thursday) they set up once again and completed Strickeen, and will today (Friday) finish off the whole adventure by completing a climb up Carrauntoohil.
"It's been absolutely fantastic and we've been blessed with the weather," Laura told the Killarney Advertiser yesterday. "We're trying to commemorate and honour dad's life and picked the mountains he enjoyed doing. Dad was 6ft 2" and had a long stride we had to chase him up the mountain which is why it's called 'Following Tom'. It's one of those things, it's sad but through the sadness we wanted a way to honour him and remember the good times." Tom was well known in Killarney but relocated to Kildare as he was working as a Senior Manager at Intel. His wife Michelle is also from Killarney. Laura has so far raised over €12,000 through a GoFundMe page for Killarney Water Rescue, Kerry Mountain Rescue Team and the Kenya Education Project. However, she added that there is a glitch which says the funding is at over €14k due to an error when someone donated and the page hasn't yet been updated. She added a huge thanks to everyone who has donated so far. "There has been amazing support by everyone, the response has been lovely." SIMPLY BEAUTIFUL
Beauty - By Jill O'Donoghue

Lash lifting is the new false lashes My lashes are stubborn. They're short, straight, and fall downward over my eyes. I've tried curlers and even false lashes - yet no matter how much I train them to stay up, the lashes inevitably drop after a single coat of mascara. Sometimes I opt for a strip of falsies and before I go on a long holiday, I get lash extensions. I've tried extensions but my lashes were left thin, brittle, and even shorter than before. Also, it's tiring to have to be extra conscious not to rub my eyes, sleep on my side, use a sleeping mask, use mascara, or a number of other no-nos. Then I discovered lash lift! They give you the best of both worlds; you get the semi-permanent lift and curl of extensions while keeping your natural lashes damage-free. I'm so floored by the results I may never go back to getting extensions.
Like old-school perms from the '80s, lash lifts set the shape of your natural lashes using a chemical solution. The only thing that we recommend is if you want a more dramatic result, then going on something like our amazing Artdeco lash serum to grow your lashes as long as possible is a great option. We usually recommend our clients come in at the eight-week mark just for a redo. What happens is all the hairs have now been shaped to be lifted and as they shed naturally, a straight one will grow in behind it. Some people need them sooner, some need them longer - it just depends on the lash cycle. Lash Tinting can also be done during this treatment, as well as brow reshaping and tinting also. It takes an hour start to finish. For more information or book an appointment, call Jill on 064 6632966.

Thinking about creating your Dream Home? Then get this FREE Guide from healycornelius design Killarney-based award-winning architectural practice, healycornelius design ltd., have produced a helpful guide on the design and construction processes, translating the planning exempt development legislation into graphical examples. A few months ago, we published an article which reported on the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic restrictions on the planning permission process. The piece prompted a number of enquiries from readers which ranged from how to get started with a construction project to detailed questions on specific requirements, such as; Exempt Development, Building Control Regulations and Health & Safety obligations.
REFERENCE
What was evident to us when addressing these questions was that there is no single reference which captures a holistic view of these topics ranging from the design to the construction process. For anyone considering a construction project, be that a small extension or a new build home, it is important to have a general understanding of all of these topics.
USEFUL TOOL
This made us think, what would a guide to design your home look like? So, for the past few months, we have been crafting a guide which we hope will be a useful tool for anyone who is starting out on the journey of improving their existing home or designing a new home.

BEHIND YOUR BUSINESS
TRACING TECHNOLOGY: Darragh Walshe, Manager of TOBA says they now use a contact tracing App for taking customers' details. Photo: Grigoriy Geniyevskiy
“We wouldn’t be able to survive without local support” A relatively new restaurant on the scene in Killarney town says that thankfully the strong support from locals is helping them to survive the upheaval of the COVID pandemic. | By Michelle Crean TOBA, which opened on High Street in October, was just preparing for a very busy first tourist season - when, unexpectedly the doors were shut in March. It wasn’t something that was in the plan for their first year of business as they built up their customer base. However, since reopening they have said that they are thankful to the locals in Killarney who have helped keep their doors open. Since reopening they’ve seen a huge uptake in their take away service but since diners are allowed indoors in more recent weeks they’ve lost up to 20 seats due to social distancing restrictions. Staff wear face masks and hand sanitisers are available to custom-
ers entering and leaving the premises. “We have probably lost between 15 and 20 seats,” Manager Darragh Walshe told the Killarney Advertiser this week. “We still have 75 seats with a minimum of one metre distance and some have two to two and a half metres. We have hand sanitiser on each floor of the restaurant and have an advanced tracing App from Peter Dunlea of Boxworks. This allows customers’ information to be put straight into the phone on the App which goes into a database that he controls and includes the contact name, table number and the time a customer was in.” He said that TOBA was fortunate to have an understanding landlord who did a deal with them on their rent to help them navigate any challenges in
the months ahead. “We were fortunate our landlord did a very favourable deal for us for the next 12 months to help us survive. We only opened in October and were building up to March when the season kicks in - then the virus came. We probably wouldn’t have been able to survive under the current terms of the lease had the landlord not done the deal.” Reopening the take away service half way through lockdown was risky and an uncertain move - but local support was amazing, he added. “We reopened as a takeaway halfway through the lockdown, that worked well for us. We didn’t have to change anything except people coming into the building. The takeaway side of the business got a major boost during lockdown. We ran a ‘Local Hero’ campaign to reward frontline workers which went well.” And the last number of weeks they’ve been very busy.
“We are doing a combination of walkins and bookings but on a Saturday night it can get very busy and unfortunately we’ve had to turn people away.“
THE MONTHS AHEAD
For all businesses there’s a fear that a second wave could happen, given that three local lockdowns occurred in Kildare, Offaly and Laois this week. However, plans are in place and he says it’ll be the locals who will continue to see them through. “We know it will be a tough winter. We know targets need to be achieved and the take away side of it will keep us going. It’s the locals that have kept us going. As a new business we wouldn’t be able to survive without them.” He added that word has spread about their food and service and they’re getting calls from Cork and Dublin for bookings. “The core of our business though is locals, we get a lot coming in sitting down.

SUPPORT
KILLARNEY
While most had put up a few pounds over lockdown - that wasn’t the case for the many members of Marie’s Slimming World groups in Killarney - who switched to virtual sessions online to continue to reach their goals. | By Michelle Crean
EXCLUSIVE
The journey since SW closed on March 14 wasn’t easy for consultant Marie O’Sullivan - but with the right tools, some technical knowhow and the support of her members - it proved to be a huge success. This week Marie is back in business with face to face consultations, although groups are now smaller and members have to book in either online or by text to help control large gatherings and ensure social distancing. “Our last group was March 14,” Marie told
the Killarney Advertiser. “We had already started social distancing and sanitising but the following day collectively all SW groups in Kerry made the heartbreaking decision to close temporarily. It was a frightening time as we are a self-employed franchise and the UK were a week behind us, but thankfully SW decided that first and foremost members would be supported continuously for free while they decided how to move forward and with that we had no earnings from groups but SW supported every consultant by giving them a percentage of the previous week’s takings for four weeks.” With that began virtual groups at a heavily reduced fee through Zoom, live videos on Facebook, daily WhatsApp messages or videos with motivation, support, recipes and ideas. Members also had access to SW online for Syns, recipes, features and so much more. “It was a whirlwind of a few months for both members and myself,” she said. “We were all thrown out of our comfort zone and had to adapt to this new world.
It became easier though and members loved Zooming in from the comfort of home and it also had a social aspect to cocooning members to still see and hear their friends. It was difficult at times and keeping motivation going did get tough but to see the awards being given out was incredible.” Members lost 257 stone while they stayed at home and Marie added that she “couldn’t be prouder of them”. “That shows strength and character. There are members who struggled and may not have lost as much as they would have hoped or maybe even gained and I'm as proud of them because they never gave up. To see members this week has been emotional and fabulous because they look so well and it's so good being back together. I have no doubt with a new normality resuming and familiarity and accountability, all members will move forward towards their personal goals.” Times have changed , sessions are shorter with small numbers to allow for social

distancing, but the support and care is still the same but members now need to book online or through text to guarantee a space. “For me personally it took me out of my comfort zone and made me think outside the box,” Marie said. “It was a new challenge to keep in touch and keep that connection to members so that they didn't have to throw away all the work they had done up to lockdown. The one thing I know is that we can handle any situation that comes our way!” Groups take place in the Brehon Hotel, on Tuesday mornings and Tuesday evenings, and on Saturday mornings in the hall of the Church of the Resurrection.
Business remains afloat thanks to staycations | By Michelle Crean It's been an extremely tough and challenging season for boat tour operators as they saw a huge fall off of foreign tourists, but Diarmuid O'Donoghue who runs O’Donoghue Boating specialising in the Gap of Dunloe tours remains optimistic. As this year's short season begins to wind down, Diarmuid, who is also secretary of the Lily of Killarney Watercoach operated by Killarney Watercoach Cruises run by a mix of people involved in local tourism for generations, says they have been busy in recent weeks with staycation holidaymakers which has kept some of their boats on the water. He says that it’s strange this year not to see the tradition of American tourists arriving, and even those from Germany, Switzerland and other countries who would normally come in large tour groups connected to big conferences in

local hotels. "We reopened on June 29 and in that time we've had four Americans on two tours,” Diarmuid explained to the Killarney Advertiser. “Overall it’s down 65 percent for all aspects of tourism which has impacted us dramatically. We’re down about 60 percent on cruises and the Gap of Dunloe Tours because of the loss of coaches and tour groups.”
However, thanks to the staycation market, he said it has helped keep them afloat. "We're fortunate to get back to business on a limited basis. We saw a huge increase in staycations and we’re delighted to have them. Everybody that we've had this year has been Irish or living in Ireland. We're after coming out the right end.” And although many drivers are on the
COVID payment due to limited work, costs associated with the business still remain. With 11 boats as part of O’Donoghue Boating, insurance and other costs have to still be paid. “We have 11 boats on the Gap of Dunloe Tour and most are tied up this year. We’re operating three or four but we still have to pay insurance and licenses with the Department of the Marine for all of them. We also have to pay for each boat to be surveyed once a year to make sure it’s fully sound and that we’re carrying the right equipment.” However, he says boatmen are making the best of what is a difficult year and are hoping that even when schools reopen that families countywide will book a day trip out with them before the season ends in September/October. “Once schools are back there’ll be a drastic fall off. We’re lucky to get part of the season. Killarney has been fortunate but it won’t make up the deficit, we were off the water for a big part of it.”

Wa...ter way to have fun!!
With beautiful weather this week, stunning scenery and friends to have fun with - it is no surprise that the Muckross Rowing Club Summer Camp was a huge success. | By Michelle Crean From Monday to Wednesday, 15 youngsters aged from 12 to 15 took part in the fun activities which saw them develop their water skills. In total over the past three weeks there were three camps each with approximately 15 who learned basic skills on the water from tutors Shona O'Sullivan, her sister Aine O'Sullivan, Marko Tot and Hannah Daly. Muckross RC was founded in the mid19th century, and is one of the oldest rowing clubs in Ireland. Shona has been a member of the club since underage and said she and the others came back to help with coaching. "We were teaching them to row technically on the lake," Shona told the Killarney Advertiser.
"We taught them the basic rowing stroke and we also did a capsized drill which meant tipping them out in boats called single sculls so that they'd know what to do if they ever fell into the water. We also did land based rowing games using rowing machines and rowing equipment such as oars when the lake was too rough to go rowing." On Tuesday they even rowed from their boathouse out to Inisfallen which took about 40 minutes. "It was beautiful. We used an octuple boat which holds eight and we also used our new offshore boat." The participants of the first two camps enjoyed a BBQ to finish off their week while this week's group had cakes to celebrate a wonderful few days of learning news skills, Shona added.

Credit union on hand to help with third level costs With the Leaving Cert results and CAO offers coming out next month, many families will see their child or children off to college for the first time. For these families, this can be an extremely stressful time, as the cost of third level education continues to spiral, having a huge impact on family budgets and household spending.
EXPLORING: Colin, Adam and Bernie Fitzsimons on holiday from Dublin enjoying some time exploring Killarney National Park.
Killarney Credit Union would like to remind their members that the credit union is here to help and have this week launched their education loan which can help families in the South Kerry area cover these costs. Killarney Credit Union can also now offer students free current accounts and debit cards. Students can avail of free day-to-day banking, Mastercard® Debit Card with Contactless, Online and mobile banking, overdraft for emergency funds and also access to Mastercard Priceless® Cities. This week Killarney Credit Union also announced the opening of its 2020 Bursary Award which will give a €4,000 bursary to six third level students to attend college this academic year. The bursary is open to all members of
Killarney Credit Union who are attending college for the first time and also those already attending college, mature students, studying abroad or doing a Masters. Application forms are available online at www.killarneycu.ie. The closing date is Friday, September 11 at 5pm. Proof of acceptance on course must be provided in advance of payment of bursary. “The significant cost of third level education puts phenomenal pressure on both parents and students starting or returning to third level education this year," Karena McCarthy, Marketing Officer, Killarney Credit Union said. "The student registration fee combined with monthly rent and bills, books and materials, food and day to day expenses are a significant financial burden to many families. Killarney Credit Union is available to support both parents and students as they prepare for the academic year ahead. 2020 thus far has been very challenging on students and families alike. We have put in place dedicated student loan officers in each of our three branches, who can advise parents and students on the best finance options. We are advising parents and students to come in early and discuss their financial needs for the college costs."

Killarney London Reunion 50th anniversary plans fading | By Sean Moriarty Hopes are fading for plans to bring the second part of the Killarney London Reunion 50th anniversary celebrations to Killarney as a result of COVID-19 related travel restrictions. Last October the Killarney Association London celebrated its 50th anniversary with a gala function in the famed Crown Hotel in Cricklewood. It was always intended to close the year of celebration with a similar event in Killarney this October Bank Holiday weekend. However, the organisers are now concerned about travel arrangements that may be place in October. It was hoped that large sections of its London-based membership would have attended the event. There are also concerns about crowd
gathering rules – currently only 50 people are allowed attend weddings and similar functions. The Killarney Association London was formed in 1969 by local priest Tom Looney, who was the immigrant Chaplin in Wembley at the time, as well as Cllr Donal Grady, and the late Cllr Michael Courtney. If October’s event cannot go ahead as planned it is hoped that it can be deferred to February or March next year. “I am aware of 150 local people alone that want to attend,” Cllr Grady told the Killarney Advertiser. “Whatever happens, the next reunion will be in Killarney. That was agreed, what happened [the virus] was nobody’s fault.” Serving as a home away from home for Killarney exiles, the Killarney London Association has gone from strength to strength over the last half century. The Killarney Advertiser is an associate sponsor of the Killarney London Reunion.
COFFEE BREAK: Deirdre Condon enjoying a cup of coffee at Reidy’s on Wednesday afternoon.
A question I have been asked by many people lately is how to go about creating a wildflower garden. With the beautiful sunny weather we've been having, wildflowers are blooming and looking their best. Often when people talk about a wildflower garden they have a vision of scarlet poppies, wild blue lupins and bright yellow daisies. They have a very idyllic idea in their mind's eye of what they want, but I would like to offer a word of caution - and a lot of words on the reality! I myself was one of these people who thought a wildflower meadow would be pretty easy to grow and easy to manage. I was quite wrong! I will start at the beginning; choice of wildflowers. As the name implies, they are weeds. Many of the boxes of so-called wildflowers are varieties indigenous to warm, dry countries, and are generally a mix of annuals. I have seen boxes with pictures of Zinnias on the front – plants which are difficult to grow indoors here in Ireland! So, beware of what you are purchasing. British and Irish seeds will have the best chance of germination. In the mix you might have nigella, poppies, Californian poppies, pot marigolds or calendula, ammi majus, cowslips, yellow rattle and American willow herb, or epilobium, Mallow, phacelia, buckwheat and maybe some mustard varieties. I have purchased a bag of perennial wildflowers from a bee supplier and they all germinated and are currently in full flower. Secondly, preparation of the land is key!
Wildflowers don't need particularly fertile soil, but it does need to be completely weed free, as weeds such as creeping buttercups and grass will outgrow your seedlings within weeks. The best way to clear your land is by either spraying the weeds/grass or by putting weed suppressant or black polythene on the ground. When the existing weeds die off, cover the ground with clear plastic to encourage seeds which are in the ground to germinate and die in the heat under the plastic. If you are tilling the soil, do this before putting the clear plastic down. Wildflower mixes can be sown in spring, or, alternatively in September/October. Scatter sparingly, as too much competition will result in a lot of the seedlings dying. Maintenance is fairly straightforward - you will need to cut your flowers at the end of the season, when the seeds have set after flowering. Let the cut foliage dry on the ground, so that the seeds can drop out and grow the following year. Rake up the foliage, as it will provide too much nutrients if left to decompose in situ. One of the drawbacks I am finding this year, having sown perennial wildflowers, a herb pasture and an area with a mixture of red clover and buckwheat, is that it can look quite messy. If you like your lawn, or a neat looking garden, this may not be for you. Perhaps keep your wildflowers to edges and ditches!

Gandhi's glasses left in letterbox! An iconic pair of glasses - thought to have been once owned by peace activist and Indian civil rights leader Mahatma Gandhi - unexpectedly turned up in a letterbox this week!
Rossbeigh has its ship wrecks and Inch its….car wrecks! A motoring journalist, who is on holiday in Kerry, uncovered the remains of a washed-up car on Inch Beach while walking on the famous beach on Monday. David Walshe, a member of the Irish Motoring Writers Association and a judge on the annual Irish Car of Year panel put out an appeal on his Twitter feed in an effort to identify the severely damaged and upturned car. The photo was taken at the southern end of Inch Point, about 4kms from

Sammy’s Café. The sand in this section of the beach is notoriously soft and several motorists, unfamiliar with the beach, have gotten stuck there. This week, with the fine weather, Inch has been particularly busy, and several cars and a camper van had to be rescued by a local farmer with his Massey Ferguson 135. There is no doubt that Walshe’s find is not a recent addition to the beach. One local believes it is an Opel Zafira that succumbed to an incoming tide a few
years ago. The car was swept out into the channel that divides Inch and Rossbeigh, at which point the owner gave up all hope of saving his motor. It resurfaced this week after Walshe discovered it in one of the rock pools near Inch Point. Across the channel, on Rossbeigh Beach, the partially submerged wreck of the 19th century schooner, The Sunbeam, is a permanent fixture on that strand. It seems Rossbeigh has its ship wrecks and Inch its…car wrecks!
Trump meets his worst nightmare Trump meets his worst nightmare – a successful woman with an ethnic background. President Trump launched an unprecedented attack on California Senator Kamala Harris' historic selection as the first Black woman to run for vice president. Harris was named by Democratic candidate Joe Biden as his run-
ning mate on Tuesday. If Biden wins the election Harris will automatically become the Vice President of the United States of America. The news hit a nerve with Trump who is known for dislike of successful women and people of ethnic origin. The Californian Democrat was
The surprise find was discovered by East Bristol Auctions in Hanham, south-west England, on Monday after being placed inside an envelope and pushed halfway through the letterbox last Friday - because it was closed! A note attached read 'These glasses belonged to Gandhi, give me a call’. "I read the note, carried on with the morning duties, and then around lunchtime I thought, 'Well let's give this gentleman a call, let's see what the story is’,” Andrew Stowe, one of the auctioneers, said. Gandhi’s Windsor-style early 20th century gold plated circular rimmed spectacles belonged to the seller's uncle, who worked in South Africa around the same time Gandhi was there - between 1910 and 1930. They will go under the hammer with a starting bid of £15,000 as part of an online-only auction on August 21. "It's a huge find of great historical importance,” he said.
born in Oakland, California, to two immigrant parents: an Indian-born mother and Jamaican-born father. She has served as the Attorney General of California between 2011 and 2017. In 2005, Newsweek named her in the Top 20 Most-Powerful Women in America. Harris has written two non-fiction books and one children's book. Nevertheless, Trump labelled her as a “nasty" person and called her a liar. He said: “I mean, she said things that were untrue. She is a person that’s told many, many stories that weren’t true.”

Fair City to return to RTÉ in early September Good news for Fair City fans as RTÉ has announced the return of the home grown programme this coming September. New procedures and systems will be in place as RTÉ continues to implement its working safely on site protocols, developed in line with HSE guidelines and Government recommendations on COVID-19. Brigie deCourcy, Series Producer, said. “We have been eager to get back to production, but the priority was the health and safety of the whole team. Everyone is delighted that we are now in a position to get back to telling stories and bringing fun and chaos back to Carrigstown." Fair City viewers will see new stories and dramas unfold as the programme will reflect life in Ireland with COVID-19. RTÉ and the Fair City team will respond to any developing HSE guidelines, and review and align our practices as appropriate.

Women’s Network calls for mandatory consent classes
Listowel Writers' Week (LWW) has collaborated with IrishFest Milwaukee for a series of online literary events this month. IrishFest at Home will be live streaming many events, including interviews with three of LWW competition winners/shortlisted writers in 2020 including Kevin Barry in conversation with Rick O’Shea. Kevin was shortlisted for the Kerry Group Irish Novel of the Year 2020 for his book ‘Night Boat to Tangier’. Also Miriam Gamble in conversation with Victoria Kennefick. Miriam won the Pigott Poetry Prize Award 2020 for her collection of poetry ‘What Planet’. Rónán Hession in conversation with Rick O’Shea. Rónán was also shortlisted for the Kerry Group Irish Novel of the Year Award in 2020 for his novel ‘Leonard and Hungry Paul’. All three events will be digitally streamed on tomorrow (Saturday) and will go live on www.irishfest.com/athome/At-Home-Schedule.
The funding is to support Irish artists and arts organisations to present projects, covering dance, literature, music, opera, theatre and the visual arts internationally. “This funding for Culture Ireland to promote Irish arts and culture worldwide and generate new opportunities for Irish artists to present their work globally is reflective of Global Ireland 2025 and the ambition to double Ireland’s global footprint, which forms part of the Programme for Government," Minister Martin said. "I am focussed on supporting the arts and culture sector to achieve a sustainable recovery and, to achieve this, Irish artists need to reach the global marketplace and audiences around the world. It is more important now than ever that we support our artists who have built Ireland’s strong global reputation for creativity.” Culture Ireland has traditionally focused on supporting artists to travel to present their work to audiences worldwide but for the remainder of 2020, the supports have been re-imagined to allow for the presentation of Irish arts online. Highlights of the online projects being funded include performances by 18 Irish acts over a 12 hour period at a virtual Irish stage at Philadelphia Folk Festival, and the presentation of Irish artists at 'Milwaukee Irish Fest at Home', both in
Young Fine Gael Women's Network are currently starting a campaign to make consent classes compulsory in second-level education as they believe that young people need necessary life-skills to respect themselves and others. Listowel Writers’ Week was founded in December 1970, by well-known characters including John B Keane, Bryan McMahon, Brendan Kennelly and Seamus Wilmot. Their vision was to create a gathering where writers could meet every year in Lovely Listowel. Organisers from LWW said that they are delighted to be part of this collaboration as IrishFest are celebrating their 40th anniversary this year, similar to Listowel Writers’ Week who are celebrating their 50th.
The groups says that they welcome Minister Simon Harris’s commitment to tackle sexual violence in third level institutions, but believe that waiting until third-level to teach consent classes is far too late. "We are calling on the Minister for Education, Norma Foley to add mandatory consent classes to the second level curriculum," Sarah Canavan, Kerry Young Fine Gael Chair &and Women's Network Policy Officer, said. "In 2019, almost one in five confirmed or suspected perpetrators in Ireland
were under the age of 18 years. This is a clear indicator for the need to implement mandatory consent classes in second-level education. Consent is the foundational aspect of healthy sexual relationships, but it is a concept that unfortunately can be misunderstood." UNESCO ‘International Technical Guidance on Sexuality Education’ and the International Planned Parenthood Federation both recommend that consent should be taught from 12-years-old so that young people understand the true meaning of consent and understand the implications of their actions. Waiting until third-level also leaves out many young people who pursue work or apprenticeships instead, she added. "Young people need to be equipped with the necessary life-skills and education to respect themselves and others."

Summer camp a hat-trick success for Celtic Club There was plenty of fun in the sun for youngsters over the past three days as they enjoyed some time out in the fresh air together perfecting their soccer skills.

| Word & Photos By Michelle Crean Two groups, aged from five to seven years and eight to 12-years-old were thrilled to get together with pals after a long lockdown, for a chance to play ball together at the Killarney Celtic Soccer summer camp. The camp ran from Wednesday to today (Friday) from 10am until 1pm, explained Brian Spillane (Head Coach). "We ran two FAI camps in the previous weeks and they were a great success," he said. "We understand parents are under pressure so we decided to run our own. We cater for kids in primary school so anything from five to 12 years. We have two children with special needs in the camp
as we also cater for all abilities. The club is part of the 'Football for All'." The focus was on one main skill each day from passing to dribbling and shooting. At the end of each session children then had an hour to play a match together. This year's camp is different to other years due to the current COVID restrictions, Brian, who is over the Senior Celtic team, said. "Each morning they register and their temperature is taken. The clubhouse is closed to the public and only the toilets are open and they've to hand sanitise on the way in and out. Because of COVID the day is shorter with no break either."

O'DONOGHUE BROTHERS BOATING CARMEL T. MADIGAN
Summer art exhibition at The Brehon Hotel Loophead based artist Carmel T. Madigan, is returning to the Brehon Hotel to host her summer exhibition of new and recent artworks, from August 18 to August 20. Madigan is no stranger to Killarney, and has frequently exhibited in the town over the past 15 years. Over that period, she has annually exhibited at the Killarney Wine and Art event hosted by the Killarney Rotary Club. Carmel's work is highly distinctive, and
Enjoy a stunning boat tour on Killarney's lakes The Gap of Dunloe was formed two million years ago, when slow moving ice carved out this mountain pass between McGillicuddy’s Reeks and Purple Mountain, but it wasn’t until Queen Victoria’s visit in the 1860s that the landmark became a bustling tourist attraction. For 250 years, the Killarney Day Tour has been the most famous visitor excursion in Ireland, and the O’Donoghue brothers have a long tradition of boating experience passed down through generations on the lakes. The trip is a firm favourite with visitors, of course, but brothers Donal and Dermot are used to familiar local faces – some families do the trip every year. Encompassing the entire National Park, passengers see such sights as the Kate Kearney’s Cottage, the Gap of Dunloe, the Old Weir Bridge and Ross Castle. The tour involves three separate stages: bus transport out to Kate Kearney’s Cottage at the beginning of the Gap of Dunloe, jaunting car or walk through the Gap, and a boat tour through the three lakes back to Ross Castle. A good day’s exercise is promised if you are using pedal power. Cyclists usually
travel the Gap in the reverse direction; the boatman will put your bike with you on the journey through the lakes to Lord Brandon’s Cottage, and you can cycle back through the Gap to Kate Kearney’s Cottage, and back to Killarney. Another popular journey is the voyage on Lough Léin with breath-taking views of the mountains of the National Park, whilst being comfortably seated in the modern and heated glass-covered Lily of Killarney MV Watercoach. Setting off 15th century Ross Castle, drift past the ruins of St Finian’s sixth century monastery on Innisfallen Island before continuing to the foot of the MacGillycuddy's Reeks to view Ireland’s highest mountain, Carrauntoohil. Pass Ross Island as your captain points out the flora of the area including the ancient Oak and Yew forests and learn about the unique ecosystem of the area. Whether you want a relaxing or energetic experience, The Lily of Killarney Lake Tour and Day Tour are both enjoyable ways to get a new perspective on the beauty of the National Park. she has developed her own processes over a period of 25 years working as a professional artist. Her work has travelled around the world and especially the US. However, this year, art exports to the US are not currently permitted due to the COVID pandemic. Over the past 15 years, Carmel has developed many friendships in Killarney, and on her return trip this summer, she is excited to meet up with her friends, collectors and new clientele. The exhibition is open daily from 11am to 6pm.

HEALTH & FITNESS Advice - By Brian Foley Brian is available for advice and fitness consultations, Call 087 403 0894 or email info@activate.ie • www.activate.ie
Rest, Recover, Recharge With our busy schedules, it seems taking time to relax is something we like to think about, but rarely happens outside of vacations a couple times a year. In our workout life, rest is also something that can seem counter-productive, especially when we think working harder is the way we can get the best results. For both of these areas, rest is a crucial part of our ability to stay healthy and continue to get healthier. Without it, we break down mentally and physically, and are forced to rest at non-ideal times which can come at a cost too. We could injure ourselves, slowly beat down our immune system and succumb to sickness, or completely lose our mental edge and ability to think clearly, causing mistakes, lack of good judgement, or even decisions that could compromise our safety and the safety of others. For a good fitness plan to be effective, rest is a massive part of the equation. However, it is often overlooked. At Activate, we recommend a balanced approach to our client’s fitness. Our beginners start with personal training where they get very dedicated attention from a coach, and usually start with two workouts a week to allow them to recover between sessions. It depends on the fitness level of the client as well as their goals, but rest is a huge part of why what we do is so effective. Over training drastically increases the potential for injury, and even without injury, significantly slows down progress. Of course, there are people who train multiple times a day but even these higher level athletes must incorporate serious rest and focused recovery to support that kind of training volume and, just because they are a higher level athlete does not spare them from the increased potential for injury their higher
volume and intensity workout schedule subjects them to. Each person is different, and we recommend listening to your body and brain’s cues as you’re working to improve your health. If you feel mentally beat up after a few days of training, it may be wise to take the day off, or back down on your intensity - go for a walk, swim, hike, take a leisurely bike ride, or something else active. Moving is great for all of us, but being careful to listen to your body is key to a long, productive life of fitness and overall wellness. At Activate, we start by looking at your current lifestyle and build enough rest first! Yes, you read that correctly, we don’t look at how much work we can cram into your schedule, we measure how much exercise is appropriate for you. All too often we see the beginners enthusiasm turn into a quick burn out and loss of motivation, this isn’t helped by the fitness industry’s “quick fix” mentality. Working every day of the week is not healthy. Taking a day (for me it’s Sunday) off to relax, spend time with family, and not try to accomplish anything work related helps me recharge my mental and physical batteries. Family time, or time out with your friends simply enjoying their company and soaking up precious time enjoying relationships helps you destress, improves your attitude, and will help you recover and be prepared for the upcoming week. Your bodily processes - hormones, muscle repair, among other things - use rest to get you ready to take on the next day and the tasks that come with it. Take some time to think about your rest days. Are you really stepping away from work and letting your mind and body reset and recover? Assess these areas and make some adjustments, you’ll reap the benefits and progress far faster. Rest is a good thing!
White-tailed Eagle population reaches important milestone 10 young White-tailed Eagles are to be released in Munster this year as part of the project to augment the small newly re-established breeding population in the Republic of Ireland. Four young eagles will be released on Lough Derg, Co. Tipperary with another two birds released at the same site later in the month. Meanwhile four young eagles are to be released shortly on the Shannon estuary in the Tarbert – Glin area of Limerick and Kerry. "While 2020 has been a difficult year for the human population, the year has seen some landmark developments for Ireland’s small population of the once extinct White-tailed Sea Eagle," Minister Noonan said. "These are our largest birds of prey and one of the most impressive birds in the world. It is marvellous that our small indigenous breeding population has reached a new milestone with the fledging of chicks at a nest on Lough Derg, Co. Tipperary. In addition our small indigenous breeding population has also reached a new milestone in 2020 with the successful fledging of the chick at Glengarrif to an Irish bred White-tailed Eagle, who herself was reared at a nest also on Lough Derg, near Mountshannon, Co. Clare in 2015.” Previously, one hundred young Whitetailed Eagles were released in Killarney National Park between 2007 and 2011 as part of the first release phase. "Once driven to extinction through human persecution, I am delighted to see these, majestic birds returning to our skylines and becoming an established part of the Irish landscape after an ab-
sence of some one hundred years!" The release project is managed by Eamonn Meskell of the NPWS with Dr Allan Mee of the Golden Eagle Trust. “We are thrilled that the first home grown Irish bred white-tailed eagle, a female bred in Clare in 2015, has produced her own chicks and reared them successfully with a Norwegian male,” Dr. Allan Mee said. “This is a hugely important milestone for the project and, we hope, the first of many of a new generation of Irish bred chicks to Irish parents. In addition, the release of young eagles on Lough Derg and the Shannon Estuary will be critical in helping bolster the existing population and form the basis of a viable self-sustaining Irish population. The signs are good that we can achieve this with 10 or more pairs likely to breed annually over the next few years. Eagles are now nesting again in some of our most iconic scenic and cultural landscapes such as near Holy Island (Inis Cealtra) on Lough Derg, the Killarney Lakes, Connemara, Glengarriff and on the western tip of the Iveragh peninsula in Kerry, where they would have nested in historical times, perhaps even on the same islands used back in the 18th and 19th centuries. It’s wonderful to see these birds back where they belong, nesting and rearing chicks.” A live streaming nest camera was set up in 2020 at a nest in Glengarriff, Co. Cork, by the National Parks and Wildlife Service (NPWS) in collaboration with the Office of Public Works (OPW). This is available for viewing at: www. glengarriffnaturereserve.ie/sea-eagle-webcam/.

Electronomous car show on the move The popular electric car and autonomous vehicle show and future transport technology summit ‘Electronomous’ will not return to Killarney next year. The high-tech exhibition and convention was held in the INEC in Killarney in 2018 and 2019. The show always coincided with the Rally of the Lakes and was organised by several people who also work for rally sponsor, cartell.ie. The vehicle data website was recently sold to Independent News Media but the sale does not affect the ‘Electronomous’ arm of the firm. However, there has been large scale restructuring in both organisations and as a result ‘Electronomous' will relocate to Dublin next year.
The 2020 event did not take place in May due to pandemic-related restrictions but an online and virtual event will take place between November 12 to 13. Next year, the exhibition will move to a Dublin airfield, mainly to allow a moving display of vehicles rather than a static show that was previously the case when the exhibition took place in INEC. However, participants did drive their electric vehicles to and from the Killarney show. It has also been rebranded as ‘Electronomous - The International Mobility Summit’ which will further extend its scope to include all forms of future transport, smart cities and inter-connectivity as opposed to a motor show. Details like date and exact venue will be announced in due course but in previous years it was staged in early May.

cartell.ie commits to one more year of Rally of the Lakes sponsorship The long-term sponsorship agreement between cartell.ie and The Rally of the Lakes will continue for at least one more year following the sale of the car data firm to Independent News and Media (INM) in July. INM’s Belgian parent company Mediahuis bought the vehicle history firm last month as a complement to its existing car sales website CarsIreland.ie. Locally, the international media firm also owns The Kerryman newspaper. Cartell.ie, established in 2006, is the market leader in provision for after market services such as car parts and accessories, providing data and analytics to both consumers and the motor industry. Several Kerry motor traders, particularly those in the Killarney district, use the service. The Clane, County Kildare-based company has sponsored the Rally of the Lakes since 2010. cartell.ie’s Head of Business Development Richard Lahiff confirmed this week that the new owners will stay on board as the title sponsor of the county’s biggest
motorsport event for at least the 2021 event with a view to extending that even further. “cartell.ie are definitely in for one more year,” he said. “The new owners have confirmed that to me.” There is a possibility that the event could be rebranded under the CarsIreland.ie banner in the future, but Mr Lahiff said all sponsorship decisions going forward are now at the discretion of INM and Mediahuis. The Rally of the Lakes did not run this year as a result of pandemic related restrictions but is scheduled to run on May 1 and 2 next season. The event celebrated its 40th anniversary in 2019. cartell.ie has been one of the rally’s longest serving lead sponsors of Irish rallying and only Shell Oil’s involvement with the Donegal International Rally in the 1980s through to the early 2000s eclipses this deal. cartell.ie management were presented with the coveted Silver Wheel award for dedication to motorsport and commitment to the Rally of the Lakes following last year’s rally.

Prepare appropriately for your job interview If you have been called to an interview – well done! Your CV has clearly impressed the employer. Now is your chance to impress them further and convince them that you are the type of employee they are looking for. Interviewers will want to know three key things: 1. What have you got that they need 2. How will you apply it to the role 3. And why do you want to work with them? These three core questions can be asked in a variety of ways which we will explore further in next week’s column, but first you need to be very clear about what type of interview you are being called for and prepare appropriately for that particular format.
COMPETENCY
Competency interviews are the most commonly used format where employers identify five to six key characteristics/ traits the successful candidate must be able to prove they have by providing examples. The best approach is to study the job specification carefully in the job advert, focus on the key competencies, prepare examples, and practice your answers out loud.
STRENGTH BASED INTERVIEWS
Strengths-based interviews focus on asking questions to figure out what you enjoy doing in the work context. What potential employers will want to hear is what your key strengths are and how they will benefit their company. You will need to study the job specification carefully. Taking online personality and strength tests can help to reflect on what you are best at.
TECHNICAL INTERVIEWS
Technical interviews focus on the area(s) of expertise that are relevant to the job and will require you to prove what you will need to know when you are doing the job. For example, to get an engineering position you may be asked to solve a mechanical problem. Think about what specific tasks are relevant to the new role and practice them.
WHITEBOARD INTERVIEWS
Whiteboard interviews are usually used where analytical skills are required and this is where you will be asked to demonstrate that you can work something out in front of the interview board. It could be on a computer, a whiteboard or a piece of paper. You will definitely need to practice talking this process out with a friend as if you were teaching them how to solve the problem in question ahead of the interview.
Niamh Dwyer is a Guidance Counsellor in Scoil Phobail Sliabh Luachra, Rathmore & PRO of Kerry Branch of Guidance Counsellors. She can be contacted on careerfocusnow@gmail.com.
PHONE INTERVIEWS
Phone interviews have become popular during COVID-19 because of social distancing and also because you are not at a disadvantage if WiFi isn’t reliable. Practice with a friend to ensure you have good mobile coverage and make sure there are no distractions around you. It can help to have keywords/points written down to keep you focused when answering.
SKYPE/ZOOM/MICROSOFT TEAMS
These type of interviews are on the increase and you really need to be careful to ensure your best performance. Lighting and positioning of the camera is critical, be careful of your background and dress as if you were at a face-to-face interview. Be very careful of your microphone prior to the interview while waiting to be admitted to the ‘interview meeting’, during it and afterwards. Practice looking into the camera on your device and not the middle of the screen.
PRESENTATION INTERVIEWS
Presentation interviews can really stress some people out because of their fear of public speaking but remember this is a part of the interview that you can really control. Take care to check exactly how long you must talk for, keep any slides/ props to a minimum and with simple content. Talk directly to the interviewers not the screen. Rehearse it in front of someone beforehand.
GROUP INTERVIEWS
Group interviews more often than not involve you and other candidates being given a topic often related loosely to the job to discuss. You are generally given some time to read through the content before the discussion starts. The aim here is to have your voice heard, to make a meaningful contribution but also be mindful of the views of others and their space to contribute. Interviewers will be looking for people that are assertive and understanding and that can lead a discussion but not take it over completely!

SQUAD: The Austin Stacks players and management team huddle up before last weekend's match.
Stacks and Dingle book final spots
Kilcummin to face Templenoe in relegation playoff
Kenmare Shamrocks and Austin Stacks overcame the odds last weekend as they jumped to the top of their respective groups to secure a coveted place in the final of the Kerry Senior Club Championship. Heading into Round 3, a Dr Crokes v Dingle decider looked to be the most likely outcome. The 2018 county finalists were in pole position in their respective pots and both were widely tipped to qualify, but fate transpired against them on the day. A last second
kick and points difference are surely two of the harshest ways to bow out but that’s how it went down, and we now await the clash of Kenmare and Stacks at a time and place that is yet to be decided. Kilcummin already knew they were in the relegation playoff and they now know that their opposition in that unwanted extra match will be Templenoe. It was a wild weekend as the group phase reached its conclusion. Here’s how it all played out.
KENMARE SHAMROCKS 2-12 DR CROKES 1-14
Kenmare and Crokes served up the game of the championship on Friday night, there’s no doubt at all about that. Things appeared to be going the way of the Killarney club in the first half as a superb goal by Michael Potts helped them to build a resounding eight-point half-time lead. Not for the first time, however, this Shamrocks team showed incredible resilience to claw their way back into
contention. A goal by Paul O’Connor, his third in three appearances, set the ball rolling and a monster of a point by Seán O’Shea reduced the deficit to two. Crokes gave themselves some breathing space by pushing the lead back out to three but a goal by Fantasy Club hero Dan McCarthy meant the sides went in level at the second water break. Edmund O’Sullivan’s side again managed to steady the ship and they were ahead by two with five minutes to go. That’s when things got interesting.
SPORT
14.8.2020 Kenmare were awarded a penalty in the last minute of normal time after Crokes failed to deal with a high ball in around the square. O’Connor stepped up to do the necessary but he was denied by a great save by Shane Murphy. Murphy dived on the rebound and he was adjudged to have touched the ball on the ground outside the small rectangle, so a free was awarded. O’Shea tapped it over to make it a one-point game. It was all square less than a minute later when O’Shea caught another high ball, turned and fired over from the 20. At this stage, Crokes and Kenmare were level in the Group 1 table but the Crokes were still in a qualifying position thanks to their superior points difference. Six minutes and 46 seconds into time added on, as Kenmare probed maniacally for a winning score, Seán O’Shea went down on a loose ball and a Crokes player was deemed to have tackled him illegally, resulting in a free in from around 40 metres out. With O’Shea, who is arguably the finest kicker of a ball in the county, back on his feet and eyeing up the posts, there was only going to be one outcome. By the time the kick was struck, O’Shea was closer to 35 metres out than 40 (kicking from the hands is always a massive advantage at times like this) and the ball had no sooner touched the netting behind the goal when the referee blew the final whistle. It was a heartbreaking defeat for Crokes and they will rightly question the amount of injury time that was played, but players and management will be more disappointed with the three unnecessary turnovers during that seven-minute period, at a time when keeping possession was all that mattered. For Kenmare, if nothing else, their exploits in this year’s competition to date are a lesson in perseverance. Had each of their three group games ended after 60 minutes, they’d be “looking forward” to a relegation playoff instead of a final.
KERINS O’RAHILLY’S TEMPLENOE
3-13 1-11
Truth be told, Rahilly’s were unfortunate to find themselves in such a precarious position. A silly turnover cost them late on against Kenmare and they gave as good as they got against the Crokes, but the bottom line was that they had zero points going into Round 3. They needed at least a draw against Templenoe to avoid the relegation playoff. They couldn’t have asked for a better start as a goal and two points by Conor Hayes propelled them towards an emphatic eight-point lead early on. Templenoe, who were hoping to avoid an immediate demotion back down to intermediate, finally got off the mark in the 11th minute through Killian Spillane and they managed to halve that early eight-point deficit by half-time. Three consecutive points at the beginning of the second made things very interesting but Rahilly’s steadied the ship and goals by Barry John Keane and Danny O’Sullivan proved crucial as they eventually won with eight points to spare. Brian Crowley’s late goal did little to console the visitors as thoughts now turn to their Kerry SFC bow. Unless they reach the final, a relegation playoff beckons.
Things got off to a rough start, however, when their scorer in chief from the previous weekend, Conor Geaney, limped off with an injury after just four minutes of play. If there’s one thing Dingle aren’t lacking, though, it’s Geaneys. Dylan Geaney stepped up to the plate in Conor’s absence and he notched 0-6 for the men from the west and with Paul (0-7) and Mikey (0-1) also finding the target, the famous footballing family accounted for 14 of the team’s 18 points on the day. The visitors were in charge for most of the game but, crucially, Kevin McCarthy (making his first start of this year’s championship) goaled for Kilcummin in the final quarter. This, combined with a missed penalty by Paul Geaney, meant that Dingle could only win by three. Attention quickly turned to Derreen. How were Stacks getting on?
KILLARNEY LEGION AUSTIN STACKS
0-8 2-13
Legion still had a glimmer of hope going into the final round of group fixtures. Victory over Stacks would send them through to the final if Kilcummin were victorious in the other match against Dingle.
55
They started well, too, as points by Conor Keane, Finbarr Murphy and Jamie O’Sullivan gave them an early threepoint lead. Unfortunately for the Killarney club, Stacks quickly took control of proceedings. Midfielders Brendan O’Sullivan and the excellent Joseph O’Connor came to the fore for the Rockies as Ferdia O’Brien (0-5, 4f) and keeper Wayne Guthrie (two 45s) did the damage from placed balls. A goal by half back Donagh McMahon took the wind out Legion’s sails and Stacks led by eight, 1-9 to 0-4, at the interval. Things went from bad to worse for Legion in the second period when substitute James O’Donoghue received a straight red card and Stephen Stack’s men ultimately fell to an 11-point defeat against their manager’s former club. The double digits margin of victory turned out to be more than enough to send Stacks through at Dingle’s expense. Kenmare are now the only thing standing between them and a second consecutive Club Championship title. The date for the final will be decided once both sides’ interest in the Kerry SFC is through.
KILCUMMIN 1-12 DINGLE 0-18
After a hard-fought draw against Stacks and solid victory over Legion, Dingle looked to be in a strong position before the start of Round 3. They were level with Stacks on points and points difference but their superior ‘points for’ tally meant that they would only need to equal the Tralee side’s result against Legion in the other Group 2 fixture, which was being held simultaneously down the road in Derreen. Their opponents, bottom-of-the-table Kilcummin, had nothing to play for, so Dingle were understandably favourites to advance.

Draws made for club quarters The draws for quarter-final and relegation playoff phase of the Kerry Club Football Championships were made on Monday night with some mouthwatering match-ups on the cards in all of the relevant grades competition. The Intermediate is always a highly competitive tournament and if the line-up for the last eight is anything to go by, it looks like being a close run thing again in 2020. Group 2 winners Spa, who maintained a perfect record throughout Rounds 1, 2 and 3, will face Laune Rangers, Castleisland will take on Dromid, it’s Glenbeigh-Glencar against Mid Kerry rivals Beaufort and in the tie of the round, An Ghaeltacht will play Na Gaeil. Currow are one of four clubs in danger of dropping down to Junior Premier and they’ll need to beat Waterville if they want to avoid the dreaded relegation playoff “final”. The losers of that game will play the losers of Ardfert and St Mary’s. The draw for the Junior Premier has also thrown up some interesting fixtures, perhaps most notably the one between Division 2 outfits Gneeveguilla and Ballymacelligott. Elsewhere, Finuge will do battle
with Ballydonoghue, Listry will meet Brosna and Group 2 runners-up Fossa will play Group 4 winners Skellig Rangers. Firies will be hoping to retain their Junior Premier status by defeating Listowel Emmets. A loss would set up straight shootout for survival against the losers of St Michael’s-Foilmore and Ballyduff. The Junior Club Championship is as tough to call as any of the grades. Renard and Tarbert’s reward for winning their respective pools is a tie against one another, Annascaul will play Duagh and Knocknagoshel will take on Beale in an all-North Kerry clash. As a result of Valentia giving a walkover to Cordal in the final match in Group 2, Cordal, Scart and Beale all finished level on four points apiece. Beale advanced due to their superior ‘points for’ in matches involving the three teams in question. The remaining two teams, Cordal and Scartaglen, had an identical ‘points for’ record so a playoff will now be required to see who will go through to play Castlegregory in the knockout phase. The playoff will be scheduled once St Kieran’s are out/finished with the County Championship, which gets underway next weekend.

Who will be crowned Fantasy Club champion? Kenmare native takes commanding lead as clubmate Dan McCarthy scores 56 points After a tense and low-scoring Round 2, the points and, more importantly, the goals were back in Round 3 as Kenmare Shamrocks and Austin Stacks emerged victorious to book their places in the Kerry Senior Club Championship final. Stacks posted a big score against Legion to pip Dingle on points difference and the scenes in Kenmare on Friday night were even more remarkable as Shamrocks beat favourites Dr Crokes with the very last kick of the game. Results elsewhere mean that Kilcummin will face Templenoe in the relegation playoff, while for the Legion, Rahilly’s, Dr Crokes and Dingle, their involvement in this year’s Club Championship is over. This will naturally have major ramifications for the remainder of our Fantasy Club game. More on that later.
LEADING THE WAY
So it was good news for the Kenmare lads on the pitch and one of their clubmates was also making waves off it as Fantasy Club manager John Crowley powered to the head of the leaderboard by posting an incredible tally of 217. Crowley was level with Conor Healy heading into Round 3 but he is now on 613 points, 65 clear of Philip O’Connor (Dr Crokes) in second. Graham O’Connor (Castleisland Desmonds), DJ Murphy (Gneeveguilla) and Joe Saunders (Dingle) also make the top five with Kerry and Legion star James O’Donoghue a few points back in sixth. Former Dr Crokes goalkeeper Alan Kelly is in a tie for seventh with Cian Foley (Kilcummin), Gavin Moriarty (Legion) and former leader Conor Healy (Rathmore) rounding off the top 10. Dr Crokes are the best represented club in the top 20 (eight managers) followed by Legion (three) and Gneeveguilla (two).
LUNDSTRAM
Kenmare all-rounder Dan McCarthy has earned the nickname ‘Lundstram’ amongst Fantasy Club managers and anyone who plays Fantasy Premier League will immediately understand why. Sheffield United player John Lundstram is listed as a defender in FPL but he actually plays in midfield, which means that he earns additional points as defenders get more for scoring and assisting than midfielders. He quickly became a firm favourite with managers during the 2019/20 season, just like Dan McCarthy has in the Kerry GAA version of the game. McCarthy is known as a versatile player who can play all over the pitch. For the purposes of Fantasy Club he is listed as a back, but he has operated in the forwards for Kenmare during the group phase. This naturally gives him a better opportunity of scoring and the Kerry U20 star has duly obliged, racking up 21 points in Round 1, 12 in Round 2, and a massive total of 56 in Round 3. Here’s a breakdown of McCarthy’s points tally in the Crokes game. He earned 1 point for starting, 3 for winning, 16 for scoring a goal and 36 for registering four points from play (9 each). His score of 56 is by far the biggest total achieved by any player in any single game week to date. Four of the top five managers in the league have McCarthy in their team. Somewhat ironically, the second and third highest-scoring players in Round 3 were not selected by anyone because they didn’t make their club’s initial 18man shortlist. Austin Stacks defenders Donagh McMahon (1-1) and Colin Griffin (1-0) bagged 37 and 28 respectively. Both received a 12-point bonus for starting, winning and keeping the opposition to under 15 points. Stacks ruled the roost at midfield as well as Joseph O’Connor and Brendan O’Sul-

livan earned 14 points apiece while up front, Kerins O’Rahilly’s prodigy Conor Hayes scored 1-4 from play to secure an impressive haul of 24 points.
DECIMATED
Crowley’s lead is certainly imposing but, like most managers, his team has been decimated now that four of the eight teams have no more fixtures to play. Only players from the finalists (Kenmare and Stacks) and relegation candidates (Templenoe and Kilcummin) can score from here on in so there could well be a

The relegation playoff will be scheduled once both sides have exited the Kerry SFC and the final is likely to be played in early October, again depending on how far Stacks and Kenmare go in the County Championship. ‘Ireland will always be home’ In Part 2 of a two-part interview conducted in 2013, Eamonn Fitzgerald speaks to legendary Irish athlete Sonia O’Sullivan about her daughters, Twitter, and life in Australia
OTB: Tell us about your two daughters. Sonia: Both girls are going to school in Melbourne and are involved in all the usual things of growing up. Ciara is 14 and is a real bright spark, very intelligent and can be very good at anything she wants to put her mind to: books, academics, and music, whatever. She does play some sport in school and also netball outside of school, but academics are her real interests… And she is very opinionated as well, even at this stage! Sophie is 11 years old. Outside of school she plays basketball and is very keen in cross-country. She is very focussed and competitive, so keen and improving her standards all the time. She does not have the innate ability of Ciara, but she makes up for it with a steely determination. OTB: The apple does not fall from the tree, Sonia! Can we expect her to follow your early promising years in cross-country? Sonia: No pressure. We will encourage them of course, but let them slot in to their own lives, whatever course that

help others now. I certainly enjoyed the experience. I was very much a fly on the wall
OTB: You are a great woman for Twitter, but baffle many with your Twitter address.
OTB: You must be delighted with fellow Cork’s own Rob Heffernan bouncing back from fourth place in the London Olympics to become world champion recently.
OTB: Would you like to have the same role in the Rio Olympics? Sonia: That would be brilliant. The Irish team is capable of great results, but that needs tremendous dedication for the next three years and we need to give them all the supports and advice we can to get them to their optimum performance. I am delighted to help out in whatever way I can.
Sonia: Yes, it is a great way of keeping in touch with so many people interested in the same things, in this case sport. The Twitter address is quite simple and so many do not realise it is just myself and the running connection. Instead of @soniarunning, I switch the running into the Gaeilge ’ag rith’ so there you have it as simple as that @soniaagrith.
Sonia: I was thrilled for Rob to lift himself after his heroic efforts in London and buckle down to the tough regime of dedicated training and commitment over the long winter months. It takes great determination and no one deserved the gold medal more so than Rob. OTB: Of course, you were Chef de Mission for the Irish team in the London Olympics 2012. Sonia: That was a great honour and I was able to help the Irish team really as a kind of a problem solver. So many things can happen that affect your performance on the big occasion that you need someone to be there as a mentor and a support to encourage you along the way. Having been through all that as an athlete I can
OTB: Can we expect you ever to return to live in Ireland? Sonia: Australia is home for us right now with Nic and myself involved in Melbourne Track and the girls going to school. I come back every so often and am here for a month this time. I am always looking around Dublin to buy an Irish home, but the more I travel around the country I see so many beautiful locations. Ireland will always be home for me, because I always feel at home here.
OTB: Ar fheabhas Sonia, the sign of excellence as usual, your hallmark. Go raibh míle maith agat as ucht an agallaimh speisíalta seo for On the Ball. Is fearr rith maith ná droch-sheasamh, surely your mantra? Sonia. It has been a pleasure talking to you and cycling with you here at the Rebel Tour in beautiful West Cork. Especially I want to thank you for those wonderful pictures taken in Garnish Island right beside us here. Ciara and Sophie will love these pictures of Ireland. It will be home from home.

Firies children enjoy first ever Hurling Cúl Camp Excited Firies children were thrilled last week to have a welcome distraction and a chance to practice their hurling skills. | By Michelle Crean It was all part of the Kellogg’s Hurling Cúl Camp which saw 53 children take part in Firies Football, Hurling and Ladies Football Club. And it was a first for the club, explained Paudie O’Sullivan, Firies Juvenile Hurling coordinator. "Firies Football, Hurling and Ladies Football Club were thrilled with the announcement of the very first Kellogg’s Hurling Cúl Camp back in June just as the country entered phase one of its’ recovery from the global pandemic," he said. “These camps are the highlight of a busy season within our club's growing code and all of the club hurlers were thrilled that their own club was hosting the hurling camp. The Kellogg’s Cúl Hurling Camp provided a welcome distraction
for a lot of children to have some fun in a secure environment.” Colm O’Brien, Kerry GAA Games Development Officer provided a steady hand to ensure each of the 53 participants were in a safe, all inclusive learning environment and that the clubs’ COVID measures were implemented to add to his camp coordination duties, Paudie added. "The club was delighted to see a few new faces that would have taken up hurling as a new skill during Ireland’s lockdown, using social mediums to practice the codes skills and are now practically ready to play competitively. The club wishes to thank Colm for his guidance and coordination and sincere gratitude to camp coaches Jack, Ruairí, Daire and Rachel for their patience and productiveness."

Caulfield-Dreier wins Munster TT junior title There was cause for celebration at Killarney Cycling Club recently as talented young rider Stefan Caulfield-Dreier took first place in the junior category of the Munster Time Trial Championships.

Caulfield-Dreier, who won the U16 National Time Trial Championships in 2019, was able to beat off some stiff competition to claim the top spot, amongst them his teammate Tadhg O’Shea who finished fourth. “It was nice to be back racing again after the lockdown,” Caulfield-Dreier said after completing the testing 30km course in Birdhill, Co Limerick. “And getting the win made it even better to be back.”
Both Caulfield-Dreier and O’Shea have also been taking part in Greenmount Cycling Academy's Time Trial series, which was run over the last five weeks in Patrickswell, Co Limerick. Stefan emerged victorious after winning each of the five rounds, thereby finishing on 50 points. O'Shea finished the series on 39 points, which was enough to clinch second place and make it a Killarney Cycling Club one-two. The pair rode some great times over the five weeks and gave most of the senior riders some stiff competition. All riders at these recent competitions had to abide by the COVID-19 guidelines handed down by Cycling Ireland and the government. These included registering online and not congregating at the start or finish lines.
Michael Fassbender has revealed that he is enjoying his new found career as a racing driver. The Fossa actor has signed up for the European Le Mans Series as part of his preparation for the legendary Le Mans 24 Hours in France next June. The second round of the European endurance racing championship took place at the daunting Spa Francorchamps circuit in Belgium on Sunday where Fassbender and his teammates took fourth in their category. It was just his second race at FIA GT level. Fassbender is sharing a Porsche 911 RSR with his professional teammates, former World Endurance Championship LMGTE Pro World Champion Richard Lietz and previous 24 Hours of Nürburgring winner Felipe Lase in the fiveround series. Each team contesting the series fields two pro drivers and one amateur. “I'm happy about every race kilometre that I can complete with the Porsche 911 RSR in this high-class series,” Fassbender said after Sunday’s race. “I feel very much at home in this car and the team and my fellow drivers give me great support.” After two rounds, Fassbender and his two teammates occupy fourth place in the championship. His next event is a return to the Paul Ricard Circuit in France on August 29.

Coyne took 19th place in his first race and 20th position in race two, bettering his pre-race hopes of a least one top 20 result. “As a father, I couldn’t be prouder of what this young boy has achieved this weekend,” said his father and team manager, Mark. “To be only 1.6 seconds off the race winner’s pace, in only his second race season, shows this kid has some natural talent. And I hope he gets the chance to achieve it.”
WINNER: Stefan Caulfield-Dreier finished first in the junior category of the Munster TT Championships.
