POLL TOPPER: Michael Healy-Rae (Independent) topped the poll in Kerry and was re-elected on Sunday night. Photo: Michelle Crean

Local lad gets over 1m Tik Tok views | By Michelle Crean

“We’ll talk to anyone” Healy-Raes ready to talk to main parties | By Michelle Crean Newly re-elected Independent TD Michael Healy-Rae - who topped the Kerry General Election poll on Sunday with 16,818 votes – says he’s willing and ready to talk to other parties about Government formation. While Fianna Fáil have ruled out working with Sinn Féin in any capacity – Michael and brother Danny - who was re-elected on the sixth count in Killarney on Monday evening - said if they’re called upon, they’ll talk to any political party. “We’re ready and willing to talk to anybody as a group if we’re called upon,” Michael told the Killarney Advertiser yesterday (Thursday). “While we have grave concerns with some Sinn Féin policies, we’ll talk to any of the main political parties.” He added that he and Danny met with

the Independent Rural group, including Michael Collins, Carole Nolan and Matty McGrath, in Portlaoise on Wednesday for talks. “We have been elected by the people so it’s imperative that the best deal is done for the country. There’s a lot of toing and froing and it’s a matter of waiting and seeing what happens.” Meanwhile, Fianna Fáil has confirmed that it will not enter any sort of collation with Sinn Féin with party leader Micheál Martin saying late yesterday that another General Election could not be ruled out.

RESULT

On Sunday, Sinn Féin’s Pa Daly followed Michael Healy-Rae in a close second by being elected on the first count with 15,640 votes. Independent Danny Healy-Rae, who was shrouded in some controversy fol-

lowing comments to Kerry Green Party candidate, was next to be elected – on the sixth count just after 5pm on Monday evening. Fine Gael’s Brendan Griffin, was also re-elected alongside Danny. The final seat, became a fight for survival for both Fianna Fáil candidates Norma Foley from Tralee and TD John Brassil from Ballyheigue on the eight count. However, it wasn’t to be for the North Kerry man as Norma took seat five – following in her father Denis Foley’s footsteps as an elected TD. Those eliminated include; Sean O’Leary (Non-Party), Ted Cronin (Non-Party), John Bowler (Irish Freedom Party) and Sonny Foran (Aontú) in the fourth count. Also eliminated was Fine Gael’s Mike Kennelly, Norma Moriarty (Fianna Fáil), Cleo Murphy (Green Party), and John Brassil (Fianna Fáil). For full election coverage turn to pages 16, 17 and 18.

It’s the hottest social media platform out there right now – with users trying to get as many views as possible – but one local lad has managed to clock up a staggering 1m views in just four days. Grigoriy Geniyevskiy, who happens to be doing a great job on his work placement at the Killarney Advertiser, made an 11 second TikTok video which caught the imagination of others. Within hours he was shocked to see that his funny sketch, which showed him playing along with song lyrics and removing letters from his name on screen on the video-sharing platform, went viral. The total playtime is just over 3908 hours, with a worldwide reach from the USA to Australia. “I set up my account @griggen and so did my buddy @shanelyne1. For the whole month of January, we spent our time making videos and we would go back and forth with the number of likes gained. It was absolutely crazy to see so many people watching my video and liking it.”

St Mary of the Angels defends itself against HIQA report | By Sean Moriarty St John of God Kerry Services, operator of the St Mary of the Angels facility in Beaufort, has defended claims made by a Health Information and Quality Authority (HIQA). HIQA visited St Mary’s of the Angels last August and in a report published this week found a number of shortcomings including the number of staff allocated to residents and the general upkeep of buildings. In 2009, St John of God Kerry Services’, who provide training, employment,

social and residential programmes for over 300 children and adults with intellectual disabilities throughout the county, had an annual HSE allocation of €17.2m. In 2019, the allocation was €16.9m. Yet over this 10 year period, the level of service provided in Kerry grew significantly with a new day centre opening in Tralee and expansions in Listowel, Killarney and Killorglin. Earlier this month the Killarney Advertiser reported that St Mary’s of the Angels will be forced to cut services after the HSE announced a county-wide cut

of €160,000. “We acknowledge the issues highlighted in the report and these clearly fall below the standards we strive to deliver and the mission and values which underpin our service,” a St John of God Kerry Services spokesperson told the Killarney Advertiser. “Many of these challenges arise regrettably due to ongoing funding shortfalls in disability services locally and nationally. We are happy to report that since this inspection last August, a significant action plan has been undertaken to bring the centre into compliance in-

cluding a refurbishment programme, a recruitment campaign and additional training of staff, and improved care planning for residents. Every inspection conducted in the facility recognises staff members and their kind and considerate approach with residents and we would wish to emphasise their positive contribution in sometimes challenging circumstances.” Over the last two years alone, we have suffered further significant cuts totalling €272,000 and a further proposed cut of €160,000 has been imposed for 2020, they added.

Sheep Dog Trials will be a huge economical boost to Killarney

HOLY GLOVE: St Pio’s Glove will be in Killarney this coming Monday evening and a large crowd is expected to attend. Hundreds expected to see miracle glove

A very special glove worn by Padre Pio - which many believe has helped carry out miracles – will be in Killarney early next week. | By Michelle Crean The fingerless glove, St Pio used to cover his stigmata which, devotees believe, corresponded with Christ's crucifixion wounds, is set to attract huge crowds to the town. Many people over the years have been blessed with St Pio’s glove and will agian get another opportunity this coming Monday evening at the Church of the Resurrection on the Cork road. The evening, which was organised by the Killarney St Pio Prayer Group, begins with rosary at 7.15pm, followed by Mass at 7.30pm, Benediction and then the blessing of the glove. “Large crowds are expected to attend,” Michael Clifford, from the Killarney St Pio Prayer Group who meets the third Monday of each month, told the Killarney Advertiser. “We bring it down to Killarney once a year and people have shown great in-

terest and devotion to it in more recent years. People attach a lot of importance to the glove and like the opportunity to be blessed by it.” Michael’s mother Sheila Clifford founded the local St Pio group 45 years ago and the group enjoys a yearly trip to San Giovani. “She had an enormous devotion,” Michael, a retired secondary school teacher, said. “She went on the trip 29 times. The yearly trip is usually in September/October with people from all over Kerry and Ireland going. This year’s trip is to Lourdes, Benevento where St Pio was ordained then we’re going to Pietrelcina where he was born and onto Piana Romana where he had a little farm, then onto San Giovani where he lived, and onto Mugnano where there’s a shrine to St Philomena.” Anyone interested in going on this year’s trip can contact Michael on 085 1309835.

The Irish National Sheepdog Trials which will take place in Killarney for the very first time this August will be a huge economical boost for the town. | By Sean Moriarty Over 150 of the top sheepdogs and their trainers from all over Ireland will compete in the three-day event on August 6 to 8 at Killalee, Fossa. The event is being organised by a local committee within the Irish National Sheepdog Trial 2020 overall committee and they have conducted a feasibility study and secured lands owned by Liebherr Container Cranes near the landmark factory in Fossa. The sport is growing both nationally and locally. Last year, 16-year-old Tara Foley competed in the well known BBC programme ‘One Man and his Dog’ and won the Young Handlers competition for Ireland. Local branch Chairman Tom O’Sullivan will represent Ireland at the World Championship in York, England later this year and fellow Kerry-based sheepdog handlers, John Cremin and Milo O’Brien, have competed for Ireland over the years.

Winners of the Killarney event will form the 15-person team that will represent Ireland at the International Sheepdog Trials in Aberystwyth, Wales later this year. “We are proud to be bringing this event to the large sheep and farming community in Kerry,” Tom O’Sullivan said. “Everyone loves watching the sheepdogs work at sheepdog trials and an event of this nature will be a huge economical boost to the Fossa and Killarney area and indeed Kerry generally.” Tom is calling on local businesses to support the August event. Organisers have considerable outlay both ahead and during the event including traffic management plans, on-site catering and other related costs. Kerry Group has already been confirmed as the main sponsor with additional support from Killarney-based hotels and Liebherr. Mr O’Sullivan can be contacted on 085 7451329.

Kenmare road to remain closed for “weeks” | By Sean Moriarty Motorists can expect several weeks of disruption due to the on-going repair work of the R569 Kenmare road after it partially collapsed during last Sunday’s Storm Ciara. Kerry County Council took the decision to close the road from its junction with the N22 Cork-Killarney road to Morley’s Bridge in Kilgarvan following storm damage at the weekend. Motorists travelling from Killarney to Kenmare have been advised to take the

diversion route via Moll’s Gap. However, no provision has been made for trucks and there is a height restriction at the tunnel on the Moll’s Gap road. Typical box-style trucks cannot fit through Newfoundland Bay Tunnel but Kerry County Council cannot put a definitive timeframe on when the work might be completed. “There is currently no timeframe for the works as the structural assessments are ongoing but it is anticipated that the road will be closed for a number of weeks. Trucks and HGVs should be aware of the height restrictions at Moll’s Gap which are

signed,” a Kerry County Council spokesperson told the Killarney Advertiser. Further issues are expected later this month because part of the diversion route is due to be closed to complete planned works near the tunnel. A road-closure order is in place from February 26 until March 16 to reinstate a partially collapsed wall on the shores of Upper Lake about 100m south of the tunnel. The road is extremely narrow there and the Council had no choice but to close it to allow the works go ahead. Council staff confirmed they could postpone these works to allow priority on the

repair of the Kilgarvan Road. “No decision has yet been taken in respect of the N71 at the end of the month, but that work will obviously be postponed if required and a decision on that will be taken in the coming days.”

Pop up health clinic a first for local group A free pop up clinic in Dunnes Stores Killarney today (Friday) is a first for one local group. | By Grigoriy Geniyevskiy

A FLIPPING GOOD TIME: Members of Killarney Soroptimist Club, Bridie Brosnan, Teresa Irwin (President), Kathleen Keane and Sheila Casey are planning their 14th annual pancake fundraiser on February 25 in the Killarney Avenue Hotel. Photo: Grigoriy Geniyevskiy

HeartBeat Killarney are offering the public a chance to get their blood pressure and pulse tested from 10am until 5pm for free by two nurses. The pop up clinic will be open at the rear entrance of Dunnes Stores. If successful, it could become a regular event in the town as the local group says high blood pressure is being ignored in young adults and teens, explained Billy

O’Sullivan, President of HeartBeat Killarney. “This is a first for HeartBeat and if it works it could benefit our community in a big way,” Billy told the Killarney Advertiser. “We have other information as well on the day. It’s for everyone and the community. It’s a stressful life and there’s more stress now. Young people have actually turned up with high blood pressure. Keep an eye out for it. You should get that checked regularly.”

Soroptimist’s plan a flipping good fundraiser

Members of Killarney Soroptimist Club are hoping to have a flipping great time for charity as they’ve launched their latest fundraiser. | By Grigoriy Geniyevskiy Ladies from the group this week gathered to launch their 14th annual Pancake and Coffee Morning which will take place on Tuesday, February 25 in the Killarney Avenue Hotel. Starting at 10.30am, they’re expecting a good attendance with all of the pro-

ceeds going to the Southwest Counselling Centre and Kerry-Cork Health Link Bus. Musical entertainment, raffles and door prizes will be available on the day. “We’re looking forward to seeing everyone and old friends and hopefully to see new friends too,” Teresa Irwin, President of the club told the Killarney Advertiser.

CHECK YOUR HEART BEAT: A free pop up health clinic will take place in Killarney today (Friday). From l-r were: Peg O'Sullivan (Dunnes), Olive O'Sullivan (HeartBeat), Donal McCarthy (HeartBeat), Billy O'Sullivan (President, HeartBeat), Michael Cunnane (Manager, Dunnes Stores), Michael F. O'Connor (HeartBeat), Lucy Clifford (HeartBeat) and Eileen Coffey (Dunnes).

New lift to be installed at Killarney NCT centre A new underbody inspection lift is to be installed at the Killarney National Car Test (NCT) centre in the coming days. Some lifts were deemed unsafe countywide, including Killarney, to allow NCT technicians to inspect the underside of cars. As a result, motorists were being forced to drive around with partial NCT tests. “NCTS can confirm that we will be installing a new lift over the coming days in Killarney, it is not operational yet as it obviously still needs to be installed,” NCTS’s Sinead McKeon told the Killarney Advertiser. “When it is operational, priority will then be given to those drivers

who are due to undergo a driving test shortly and an NCT taxi roadworthiness test.” She was unable to confirm if and when the Tralee and Cahersiveen centres would become fully operational. “We are still in the process of conducting a condition survey of all vehicle lifts in the NCT. This should be completed towards the end of this week. When completed, we will immediately begin a programme of repairing the remaining lifts within the network. We will provide regular updates as test centres come back into operation.” The advice for customers is to continue to book and turn up for their NCT as normal.

LOOK TO THE FUTURE: Fifth and sixth class pupils from Knockaderry Farranfore National School with letters to their future selves with their principal Aine Daly

Back to the future for Knockaderry pupils A time capsule set to be re-opened today (Friday) will be like stepping back in time – 25 years in fact – at Knockaderry National School. | By Sean Moriarty On this day in 1995, the Fifth and Sixth class pupils stored an array if items including letters to their future selves as well as popular items of the time, interviews with locals, and a scale model of the village the pupils constructed at the time, as part of the ‘2020 Vision Time Capsule Project’. Over the years village changes include the school moving from where it once stood at the location of where Liam Lynch Motors now stands to a new building which was opened in 1998. It was also renamed

Knockaderry-Faranfore National School at this time. Moriarty’s Centra was not yet opened but Mike and Margaret Moriarty’s daughter Maria was one of the pupils involved in the project. The current kebab shop was also O’Neill’s Grocery Store. The project was the brainchild of current school Principal Aine Daly, who had just started teaching at the Farranfore school. “I know a lot of the pupils are both nervous and excited about reading letters to their future selves,” Aine told the Killarney Advertiser this week. “I often wondered if

it was forgotten about, but one family was visiting their son in Boston over Christmas and he was asked if it was ever going to be reopened.” The event at the time was sponsored by local branches of the Bank of Ireland and the Knockaderry NS capsule was retrieved from the Castleisland branch’s vault earlier this week ahead of its grand-reopening today. “We recorded interviews with local characters and people working in local business like the airport, train station and mills,” Aine said. “Today’s kids would never have used a tape recorder.” The school made every effort to contact former pupils to invite them to the reopening and while they contacted the ma-

jority of past pupils, Saturday’s General Election allowed them make contact with the few remaining families. Many of the past pupils or close family relatives would have cast their vote the school and staff were able to meet many of them personally on Saturday to offer the invite. As a result nearly all of the 23 children that were involved in the project will be at today’s event. “Many of my pupils back then would have their own children going to the school now,” Aine added. “Over 70 schools in Ireland took part but I am not aware of any that has the same continuity as us.” Current pupils at the school were encouraged to embrace the project too. They have been asked to predict what might be in the box. “The current pupils are rehearsing the songs of the day, Oasis, ‘Don’t Look Back in Anger’ to perform today,” added Aine. Today’s event will close with the current pupils adding their items to the capsule and returning it to the bank’s fault where it will remain for another 25 years – and it will include a copy of today’s Killarney Advertiser!

Killarney Water Rescue launch new boat | By Sean Moriarty Killarney Water Rescue launched its new rescue boat - named after Cian O’Donoghue who tragically drowned in Lough Leane in July 2013. The new boat, launched on Saturday at the Muckross ‘Wet Boathouse’, joins three others in the local rescue service fleet, but this one has sea as well as lake capabilities. Killarney Water Rescue has around 10 dedicated volunteers on its team and works closely with organisations like Ker-

ry Mountain Rescue and Valentia Coast Guard. It is called out on average twice a month with callouts increasing in the summer months. The new boat will allow the volunteers to work closer with the coast guard and help sea rescues in local beaches like Inch and Rossbeigh as well as increasing its presence on Killarney’s lakes. “We could be called to anywhere and we are on call 24/7,” joint-PRO Diane Healy, said. “If the Coast Guard wants us – we have to go. We are pushing for more volunteers. A few of us go on every mission.” Interested volunteers can contact Diane Healy on 087 6676813.

NEW BOAT: At the launch Killarney Water Rescue’s new boat on Saturday were John O’Loughlin, Michael Barry, Jimmy Sweetman, Eadaoin Moynihan, Alice Sweetman, Sinead Sweetman and Diane Healy.

VIEWS NEWS It is the heart that stirs history, not the mind “ THE

Our lá has arrived, but we don’t know what will tiocfaidh. The ruaille buaille over a bit of a ditty – “up the Republic, up the rá”, and “tiocfaidh ár lá” - and the belting out against the strains of ‘A Nation Once Again’, and offence at use of the tricolour in election halls by one party, the biggest vote getters, suggests some of us are - to put it kindly - a bit conflicted. So what are we saying, that the sports stadium and not the election hall is the place for the tricolour and the nation singing? When the brandy flask is passed around at rugby or the beer in plastic is swilled at soccer, then it’s ok - and only then?

BURYING THE PAST

This kind of mock outrage often happens when we want to bury a difficult past. There was a time we all shouted out and sang along to “armoured cars and tanks and guns” the Tones packed the Gleneagle, the Pope visited, and the night in the pub ended - early by today’s standards and with far less alcohol - when we all stood to ‘Amhran na bhFiann’, the soldier’s song, when Spancil Hill would rise, or Boolavogue and the songs of ’98, maybe ‘The Rising of the Moon’, and ‘The One Road’ - oh, always ‘The One Road’! Sometimes it was hard to tell at the height of it all - with Paisley roaring about Papists and saying the whore of Babylon was sitting in the South, and the B-Specials beating poor Catholics, and young men dying on hunger strike for an ideal that was never go-

ing to measure up, and being flung into prison without proper courts, and children torn from beds, and Catholics need not apply and my Protestant friend who went up North to visit her cousins being called “a bloody Fenian” - where one song ended and the other, the official song, the anthem, began. And what was the difference anyway? Even Fianna Fáil were confused, back in the day.

WINK AND NOD

We won’t talk now about the failed attempt by Haughey and others to bring in arms and send munitions over the border. It was all wink and nod. But Haughey and co kept the singing going long after their tune was called. And they kept it all fired up, and FF are every bit as responsible for trying to capture the Republican sentiment for votes, perhaps. And maybe we should examine if this kept The Troubles going long after it should have. On the current scheme of things when only some songs are acceptable, and only at some venues, FF too should be asked to answer for their past, I suggest.

WRITING HISTORY

Now when the history of this extraordinary election is written, it will be about just what sparked the Republican green tidal wave. I will contend the fuse was lit by a song. ‘Come out ye Black and Tans!’ The Wolf Tones re-release shot to number one here and in the UK . It was bizarre, I remarked. “It is why I love Ireland, mom,” my daughter in France said to me. The crass move by Charlie Flanagan to commemorate the Black and Tans, to bury the past and any form of nationalist sentiment is what sparked it. In the cold light of post-Christmas celebrations, in the middle of January, the month that looks backwards as well as forwards, with elderly on trolleys and children eating off cardboard on streets, and violence of a kind not heard of since the Shankill butchers. Commemorate the Black and Tans? It was too much. We are already swallowing from Flanagan how much the “old Irish” need to be re-educated in case they made racist remarks unconsciously - he actually said as much in

Killarney. I welcome the new Irish as much as anyone, more than some, but I am increasingly uncomfortable with the putting down of “the old Irish” by Fine Gael’s Flanagan, and too many political commentators given too much voice. No surprise many of them missed the story and are now concentrating on a few bars of a song and throw away muster at the end of a long election count in a Waterford bar. Republicans of the armed kind remember their dead. This is what they do. Cullinane, who is not my favourite politician, was recalling a hunger striker, whose name a few remember – but he was remembering.

SINGING NATIONALIST SONGS

I was reminded of a piece of graffiti in UCC at the height of the Hunger Strikes scrawled on the back of a toilet cubicle door - “George Sands we will remember you forever!” It was almost right - we remember the Protestant Bobby Sands - but none of the others. Singing nationalist songs kept many of us away from the armalite in those fraught times with thousands out on the streets and men in military black carrying coffins in mock funerals to every town square. Singing and shouting “Up the Provos” - we called them the Provos not the Rá - was cathartic as Aristotle might say. You see what really drives political earthquakes of the extraordinary kind we witnessed last week, is not one-sided cold reason, lisping statements about global economies, manifestos and debates, and analyses about debates, but emotion and pity and a few bars of a song - simple as that! It is the heart that stirs history, not the mind. Now remember, if you must sing a song, sing an Irish song!

Is there some way we can energise politics? Staying with elections: I thought this election was peculiarly devoid of atmosphere. Fewer people than ever turned out in the public gallery in Killarney. The results were a foregone conclusion and even then it was the old and the tired, by a long shot. Is there some way we can energise politics, I wondered. Partly of course it had to do with the madness of leaving

Killarney without a candidate. Only for the Kilgarvan tribe, we’d have no one. And on this note, Ivan Yates remark to Michael Healy-Rae that “Fianna Fáil threw the kitchen sink at the HealyRaes in this election” and “ye survived in spite of them”, will have to be addressed. Fianna Fáil departed the field entirely in Killarney to allow the HealyRaes the advantage - full stop. The absence of a candidate by a political party with policies and aims is a disgrace

and they should be ashamed of calling themselves political parties. What a nasty thing too FF did to their hard working TD John Brassil putting a strong candidate on his doorstep! I could never see two seats for FF in this election. Even the old canvassers - you know the ones, the people who owed the party their public sector jobs etc., were still not out this time round. And as readers of this column will know, I could never write Daly off. And as I

predicted, far from the Ferris factor being a handicap, it was an advantage to Daly in Killarney that Ferris was not on the ticket. Now mega congrats to Cleo Murphy the Green Party beating the second FG candidate etc. There must be a Council seat for Cleo, or even a European, she is an able performer - especially on a day when the road home to Kilgarvan collapsed!

“I’ll never forget them from the bottom of my heart” Independent Danny Healy-Rae who was elected on the sixth count has said that he’s “grateful” to everyone who came out to support him. | By Michelle Crean “I believe that we do listen to people and I believe that has been the key to what has happened other TDs and candidates that fell by the wayside, they weren’t listening,” Danny told the Killarney Advertiser. “You have to listen to the people, you have to understand what their needs are. Certainly health is a big issue, certainly housing is a big issue, certainly farmers are being totally and absolutely being blackguarded and not being listened to by the last Minster for Agriculture. I don’t like pin pointing any one person but the last Government left so many people down and that’s why I believe that much of the vote has gone to Sinn Féin and the Green Party is a protest vote. They didn’t want to vote for the established parties because it was going to be all the same again.” He added that by being re-elected, the Healy-Raes have been recognised for the work that they have been doing on the ground. “We understand people. I believe that

we’re doing that better than any other group or single Deputies in Dáil Eireann. I believe we have the knowledge and we have the ground built up over years and years from my late father Jackie HealyRae and the one thing he always told me was “if you can’t help someone Danny, certainly don’t do them any harm”. Speaking about last week’s TG4/Ipsos MRBI constituency poll which revealed he was polling at four percent Mr HealyRae said that he lost sleep as he was worried he might not be re-elected. “That poll actually did play on my mind a bit, I didn’t sleep for a couple of nights because I felt I’m a long and seasoned campaigner now. I knew we were getting a massive response on the doorstep I knew the people appreciated the work I have been doing.” But he said people “came out from everywhere” to vote for him. “A girl from Firies/Ballyhar came all the way from Austria at her own cost to vote for me and elderly people who didn’t vote for many years. I’m grateful and I’ll never forget them from the bottom of my heart.”

“I remember with huge affection and gratitude my father,” Norma said. “He would be a very proud man. He was a representative for a long number of years. I travelled everywhere with him to party meetings, committee meetings, constituency meetings. It was from working with him that I got a great love and appreciation of what it means to be a public representative and the importance of working with people on the ground. He was central to it all and he is on my shoulder now and he was every day of the campaign. I know he’s looking on with great pride.” She also added that her mother, who was there on the day to see Norma elected, was central in her campaign. Norma added that it was always Fian-

na Fáil’s intention that the party would seek to return two seats for the Kerry constituency. “That wasn’t to be. And personally I’m very disappointed for John and I’d like to acknowledge his service to the constituency over the last four years as a TD. I regret that we weren’t able to pull off a second seat. I also want to acknowledge Norma Moriarty (Fianna Fáil), an excellent councillor who really put in a huge effort.” She also paid tribute to the supporters who helped her “with a magnificent canvas on the highways and byways of the county on my behalf” as “they believed what I was trying to achieve for Kerry”. “I’m very very grateful and I’ll do my absolute best to represent you the way you want to be represented in Dáil Eireann.”

Emergency Department nurse Tanya Sheehy from Ballyhar caught the train from Kossen, near Insbruk, to Munich for her flight to Dublin after hearing the results of the TG4 poll which put her hero at only four percent.

"My father (John) rang me to say Danny was in trouble and would I ever come home to vote,” she said. "I saw the poll on TG4 and I flew home just to support him.” At the Killarney Count Centre shortly before catching her flight to head back to Austria an overwhelmed Danny HealyRae was left almost speechless. "See what they did for me!" Danny said as the pair were surrounded by well-wishers.

HOW YOU VOTED: Killarney area breakdown In the Killarney electoral area there was one clear winner in Saturday’s election. In a survey of 32 polling stations in the Killarney area which included all townbased stations and schools from Faha to Rathmore, Michael Healy-Rae topped the local area with 3,290 first preference votes. Outgoing Junior Minister Brendan Griffin was second taking 1,673 first preferences in the local area just 17 ahead of Danny Healy-Rae. Sinn Fein’s Pa Daly was fourth on 1,354, while Norma Foley eventually got elected on the eight count she was far from the most popular Fianna Fáil candidate in the Killarney area. She took 364 first preference votes

while her party running mate and outgoing TD John Brasil took 535 - but he was ultimately eliminated by Foley. Norma Moriarty, the third Fianna Fáil candidate scored 345 first preferences in the surveyed area. Fine Gael’s second candidate, Mike Kennelly failed to make any in roads in Killarney, securing just 77 number ones, his North Kerry neighbour, the unknown Sonny Foran took 124. Ted Cronin, the animal rights activist, took 63 first preference votes, while Cleo Murphy’s Green Party vote did not materialise in the local area either after she secured 55 votes, just two ahead of John Bowler of the Irish Freedom Party. Danny Healy-Rae withdraws remarks about the planet Election candidate Danny HealyRae has apologised for comments he made regarding the planet.

Pupils fascinated by voting process

| By Grigoriy Geniyevskiy Although they’re not yet able to cast their vote – youngsters got a great insight into the voting process early on Monday morning. Sixth Class pupils from Gaelscoil Faithleann, who are only two minutes-walk from the Killarney Sports and Leisure Count Centre, got a full tour to see the count in action. At first it seemed a little confusing – but with the guidance and explanation of Count staff and their Principal Proinsias Mac Curtain and teacher Treasa Euíscannláin, they soon became familiar with the whole process. “It was important for them to know how

On Sunday, Independent Danny HealyRae, was involved in a spat with Kerry Green Party candidate Cleo Murphy at the Killarney Count Centre. His comments included; "To hell with the planet and the fellas that say we must save the planet and forget about the people”. They were involved in the dispute after Cleo spoke to him informing him that the R569 between Kilgarvan village, Kenmare and Killarney - had been closed due to a land slippage alongside the Flesk River in the wake of Storm Ciara. However, on Monday, after coming

under fire for his comments Mr HealyRae withdrew his remarks. "I'm very sorry if the comments I made in relation to the planet, have offended people,” Danny Healy-Rae said. “Obviously we must care for the planet, but we must be fair to the people in it. I apologise sincerely for the comments I made. I withdraw that remark because we must care for the planet, but we must mind and care for the people in it as well. If my comments offended anyone, I want to sincerely apologise for that. Obviously I care about the planet as much as the people in it, the point I was trying to get across is as much as we must mind the planet, we must be fair to the people. Again I apologise and withdraw these remarks.”

an election works to see democracy in action,” Proinsias had told the Killarney Advertiser. “They’ll all be voting in six years. They saw how it works and will partake in the voting when they are 18.” Afterwards, the pupils, who all said they enjoyed their excursion, had a lot to say about the experience. “It’s good to know what actually happens,” Faye O’Carroll said. Annie O’Connell, added that it was really good to learn how all the votes are done. “It’s cool to be here in real life and not watching it on TV,” Muireann O’Donoghue also added. When asked if they will vote in the future, they all said “definitely”. DISPUTE: Green Party candidate Cleo Murphy pictured with Danny HealyRae and Killarney Advertiser columnist Anne Lucey on Sunday when Mr Healy-Rae made the remarks about the planet. Photo: Michelle Crean

“I know I gave it my all and I’ve no regrets” TD John Brassil who failed to secure a seat to the 33rd Dáil – beaten by running mate Norma Foley from Tralee for the final seat – said that he has “no regrets”. Even though it was a tough day for the Fianna Fáil candidate, he congratulated the five successful candidates. He said it was unfortunately not his day and that he “gave it everything” he had.

He praised his team and said that they did “everything possible” and “at the end of the day the electorate decided that it wasn’t to be”. “We will have other opportunities I hope in the future,” he said. He thanked everyone who helped on the campaign. “Today was not my day but it won’t deter me for the future.”

The Mama Movement Classes are unique, as they understand that no two mama's are the same. Every pregnancy and postpartum journey is different. In Killarney, Pre and Postnatal Exercise Specialist, Selina Looney, has set up The Mama Movement, with strength and conditioning classes to suit women at every stage of their journey throughout motherhood. She offers prenatal and postnatal strength classes, as well as her Mama At Home Service – so you get to work out in the comfort of your own home where she brings the gym to you! The goal of The Mama Movement is to help mamas prepare for the physical demands of motherhood and provide mamas and mamas-to-be with information on how to live a fit and healthy lifestyle from pregnancy and beyond. “I want to empower women to not be discouraged or compare themselves to others,” mom of three Selina told the Killarney Advertiser. “Weight training during pregnancy and

beyond physically prepares you for motherhood which I believe is crucial for every mama and mama-to-be.” “Watch as she manoeuvres through her mom life day; she will squat, deadlift, lunge, twist and bend multiple times mostly in awkward positions reaching in and out of cots, car seats and the rest, this is all factored into these small group classes.” Since becoming a personal trainer, Selina went on to obtain pre and postnatal qualifications to ensure the level of service she offers women is the best. “Everything a mama's body has gone through in pregnancy and birth is taken into consideration to make sure these workouts will aid your recovery and not hinder it. We aim to strengthen the pelvic floor, to activate and strengthen the deep abdominals, and work the core as a whole. We also spend time working

Rathmore social housing project gets green light Rathmore will get 20 new social houses, which are expected to be completed by December, as part of a countywide project announced by Kerry County Council last week. | By Sean Moriarty A total of 88 houses will be built in seven different locations across the county. The seven contracts, which are worth a combined €17m, will see the construction of social housing in Ardfert, Kenmare, Lixnaw, Rathmore, Ballybunion and Glenbeigh. The Rathmore development consists of 20 houses in Ait Manach. Cathaoirleach of Kerry County Council, Cllr Niall Kelleher, a Rathmore resident, welcomed the contract signings and pointed to the quality of social houses provided in Kerry.

“We are fortunate to have quality construction companies in Kerry whose experience and track record in the delivery of housing projects is second to none,” he said. “This has enabled Kerry County Council to quickly progress projects such as these.” The Cathaoirleach also referenced the new building standards which these houses will be constructed under. “Modern building standards have greatly improved over the past decade, and those living in these new houses will benefit from high energy efficiency standards that will significantly reduce energy consumption.”

Water supplies in Barraduff and Shrone – effecting 1,500 water consumers - have been removed from the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) remedial action list. The latest report from the EPA shows that Irish Water has reduced the number of schemes on the Remedial Action List (RAL) in Kerry to four. The RAL identifies drinking water supplies that are ‘at risk’ of failing to consistently supply safe, clean drinking water. The supplies in Barraduff and Shrone have been given the thumbs up by the EPA following extensive investment and upgrade works by Irish Water working in partnership with Kerry County Council. Works are continuing on water supplies still on the RAL with a view to having them removed from the RAL as soon as possible. “The publication of the latest RAL by the EPA confirms that whilst improvements

have been made in many areas, the scale of the challenge faced by Irish Water in ensuring the delivery of clean and safe water in Kerry and throughout the country remains," Paul Cremin, Capital Programme Regional Lead, said. Irish Water is also about to commence a €300,000 upgrade to water supply infrastructure in Knightstown on Valentia Island. Increased storage will be provided to safeguard the security of water supply to the village and surrounding townlands during peak seasonal periods. The project will be carried out by Shay Murtagh Precast Ltd., in conjunction with Kerry County Council and will take a number of months to complete.

FAMILY GATHERING: Líle Áine Sheehan who was christened at Saint Mary’s Church,Beaufort last Sunday with her parents Alison and John and big brother Daire, her godmothers Ruby and Anna-Mai Tuohy and godfather Stephen Egan, and extended family and friends.

Baby Líle blessed with two godmothers The Sheehan family gathered at Saint Mary's Church, Beaufort for the christening of baby Líle on Sunday. Proud parents Alison and John and big brother Dáire celebrated her baptism in style. Whatever happens in life, little Líle is sure to have the best of everything. She

starts out with, not one, but two godmothers. Ruby and Anna-Mai Tuohy are her two cousins and were given the big job by their aunt, Alison, who is Líle’s mom.

Godfather is Stephen Egan. After the ceremony over 50 family and friends continued their celebration at the Killarney Plaza Hotel. “Her big brother Dáire, who is only 22 months, takes his new big brother role very seriously and watches over Líle like a hawk,” Alison said. “He has been a dream since Líle arrived

home and makes sure she is well looked after.” Líle's day was very special as she was surrounded by love, laughter and a lot of memories to cherish, Alison added. “Líle really enjoyed her day and has many memories to look back on when she is older.”

Double celebration for one family! It was a case of a double celebration for Ross Lewis from Aghadoe and Deirdre Griffin from Keel as they celebrated their recent engagement and the christening of baby Harry on Saturday. The couple got engaged at their Firies home the previous Friday but Saturday was all about Harry, a younger brother to Tiernan. His baptism was celebrated at St Gertrude’s Church ahead of a family dinner at The Brehon Hotel. Deirdre’s sister Karina O'Connell was appointed godmother while Sean Nolan, a friend of Ross, is the godfather.

Grandparents Donal Griffin, and Scott and Patricia Lewis, were among the main celebrants that also included Ross’s brother Robert, and Deirdre’s sister Elaine. Later that evening they were joined by friends for a social gathering at The Plaza Hotel where the couple celebrated their engagement. “It is a busy house these days,” said Ross.

GARDEN MAGIC

Gardening - By Debby Looney

Debby is available for advice and garden consultations, just call 086 6088156 or email barnhillky@gmail.com

What better gift to receive? I am not a very romantic person, but I must admit to having a weakness for roses! Cut roses are beautiful, but growing roses are better… with that in mind, I thought I’d share my favourite red roses with you. ‘Alec’s red’ is a Hybrid Tea rose, with large fragrant blooms. It grows to about 3ft, with bright green foliage. ‘Alexander’ is also a Hybrid Tea, with fully double red flowers, on long stems, which make them ideal for cutting. The foliage is dark, glossy green, almost burgundy when very young. This rose grows to about 6ft. ‘E.H.Morse’ is a beautiful large flowered Hybrid Tea, with an exquisite perfume, and a very long flowering period. Certainly E.H. Morse is one of the most fragrant of the red roses. Maybe in terms of fragrance the only rival E.H.Morse has, is the well-known ‘Fragrant Cloud’ which produces an abundance of scarlet flowers. It grows to about 3ft. I was given two last year and was astounded at the amount of flowers produced. What better gift to receive? Hybrid Tea roses are a cross between Hybrid Perpetuals and old-fashioned tea roses, combining the best of both, however, the old roses have a special place in my heart. I generally find them easier to grow, and hardier than Hybrid Teas. A hybrid perpetual which I would recommend highly is ‘Baron Girod de

l’Ain’, a rose which grows to about 1m, has dark green leathery leaves and is adorned from summer until winter with deep crimson strongly scented blooms. The flower petals are wavy, with white edges. I find it to be very disease resistant. ‘Gypsy Boy’ is a crimson bourbon rose, which grows tall, to about 2m. It has prominent golden stamens in a flat, double, highly scented bloom. The ‘Tuscay Rose’ is an old Gallica Rose, also known as the “velvet” rose. It has maroon, velvety blooms, with bright yellow stamens. Ideal in this county, where it can be rare that we get a very sunny summer, as the flowers may fade in full sun. Last but certainly not least, ‘Trumpeter’ is still a very popular floribunda rose, with clusters of orange red flowers over summer. Growing to about 3ft, it is an ideal rose for any garden!

GENEROUS DONATION: A total of €5,426 was presented to Comfort for Chemo Kerry charity this week. Funds were raised during the Christmas period from three events in Kilcummin; Pink Night, the Dermot Moynihan Memorial Card Drive and the Catherine O’Leary and Mary Lynch Memorial Walk.

Strong interest at recruitment event There was a strong interest in the employment opportunities on offer in the 12 hotel groups that took part in this year’s Hotel Recruitment Event, held at the Great Southern Hotel in Killarney last week. Now in its second year, the event, organised by South Kerry Development Partnership (SKDP), gives both employers and potential employees the opportunity to meet each other in an informal setting to discuss potential employment opportunities. This year’s event saw an increase of 50 percent in the numbers of hotels taking part with representatives from 12 different hotel groups in attendance offering opportunities across all areas of the hospitality sector. Over 100 potential job seekers registered to attend the event. The event gives people with no direct experience in the hospitality sector the chance to start off in a new career which

they might not get the chance to do through the more formal recruitment process. SKDP Enterprise Officer Joanne Griffin said she was very pleased with how the event went. “There was an excellent turnout of both hotels and potential employees at this year’s event, with people travelling from all parts of Kerry and beyond, including overseas, to try and secure employment in the sector,” she said. Those attending were very happy with the format and the informal setting and said that it offered a chance to match people with people. The event was held about a month earlier than last year which suited the hotels better also. “I will be following up with both the hotels and the potential employees in the next week to facilitate the next stage in the process,” Joanne added, and she noted that a number of hotels had actually already arranged interviews with some of those attending the event.

Cable Girls

The Worst Best Man

RELEASED: FEBRUARY 14

By Mia Sosa

‘Cable Girls’ is a Spanish period drama web television series produced by Netflix. It's the 1920s and Spain has just gotten its first national telephone company, located in Madrid. For four young women who get jobs there, it's more

than just work. It represents progress that is being made at the time as women are gaining more equality with men. This drama series follows the ladies, known as "cable girls", who feel attached in different ways, to their families, their partners and their memories.

failed nuptials. Max has been public enemy number one ever since he encouraged his brother to jilt the bride, and Lina’s ready to dish out a little payback of her own.

on the box

Isobel Campbell There Is No Other Since leaving Belle & Sebastian in 2002, Isobel Campbell has recorded five studio albums, plus a further three collaborations with Mark Lanegan. Bizarrely, ‘There Is No Other’ is her first release in a decade, partly due to her unwittingly getting tangled up in music industry red tape. After initially rising to prominence at the tender age of 19, Campbell has left her past behind and is no longer shackled to the B&S brand of chamber pop.

Critically acclaimed author Mia Sosa delivers a sassy, steamy enemies-to-lovers romantic comedy about a woman whose new job requires her to work side-by-side with the best man who ruined her wedding: her ex-fiancé's infuriating, irritating, annoyingly handsome brother. A wedding planner left at the altar. But despite that embarrassing blip from her past, Lina’s managed to make other people’s dreams come true as a top-tier wedding coordinator in DC. Tired of living in his older brother’s shadow, marketing expert Max Hartley is determined to make his mark with a coveted hotel client looking to expand its brand. Then he learns he’ll be working with his brother’s whipsmart, stunning, absolutely off-limits, ex-fiancée. And she loathes him. She has to collaborate with the best make that worst - man from her own

She manages to pull off an extremely audacious cover version of ‘Running Down a Dream’ by Tom Petty, which is reinvented as a Campbellesque mid-tempo bittersweet pop tune and pays off. Many of her songs are built around repeatedly restated short melodies or guitar figures. In ‘Ant Life’ and ‘Rainbow’, the very clipped acoustic guitar phrasing suggests it’s a loop rather than real-time playing.

A WEEKLY ROUND-UP OF NEWS • VIEWS FROM KERRY AND AROUND THE WORLD

INSPIRED BY DANNY CASEY

British nationals snap up Irish passports Over 50 British nationals working for the European Commission in Brussels have acquired Irish passports, which can help secure career progression.

MS Society plans Kerry self-care seminar The Rose Hotel Tralee will play host to the first ever MS self-care seminar in Kerry on Saturday, February 29. The Kerry Multiple Sclerosis Wellness Event, which runs from 10.30am – 3pm, will take a holistic approach to empowering attendees to manage their care by focusing on exercise, nutrition and mindset. Expert speakers on the day will be

Neurologist Dr Helena Moore, Coach Ailis Brosnan, Dietician Conor Kerley and Physiotherapist Professor Susan Coote. Attendees will also benefit from a multitude of exhibitors and therapists throughout the event. The Kerry Multiple Sclerosis Wellness Event was organised by Susan Carey and Jillian O’Sullivan after seeing an opportunity to introduce more health and lifestyle services here in Kerry, for people

living with MS. “What’s different about our event is that it is lifestyle based, supporting people to take a more hands on approach to their selfcare,” Jillian said. “We’re building a really positive day here, with approachable speakers on hand who will help to empower all of us to take better care of ourselves. We’re really proud to be bringing this opportunity to the community here in Kerry, rather than perhaps more mainstream centralised locations like Cork, Limerick or Dublin,” added Susan. The Kerry Multiple Sclerosis Wellness Event is free to attend, but with limited capacity booking in advance is essential.

10 percent of the 569 Irish passport holders working for the commission were previously British passport holders, according to the Irish broadcaster RTÉ. Anyone with an Irish parent, or a grandparent born in Ireland, is entitled to an Irish passport. Securing dual nationality with another member state can enhance the career prospects of British citizens employed in EU institutions but it is not secure. “As a consequence, staff members from the United Kingdom who declare a change of nationality after March 29, 2017 shall still be considered to have kept the UK nationality as first nationality for the purpose of ensuring a balanced representation of staff within the commission, notably at middle-management and senior management level,” the Commission said. This is part of an EU-wide trend, with more than 350,000 UK citizens living in Britain or a member state opting as a post-Brexit insurance policy for dual nationality.

Did Trump learn his lesson? It has been roughly a week since the Senate acquitted President Trump. The Republican Senators believe Trump has learned his lesson. What lesson did Trump eactually learn? His response to that exact question was, “That the Democrats are crooked; they’ve got a lot of crooked things going. That they’re vicious that they shouldn’t have brought impeachment”. Democratic Senator, Sherrod Brown, says there is another lesson that the president has learned;

“The lesson he can do whatever he wants. He can abuse his office he’ll never ever be held accountable by this senate”. As a result, he extends his own influence by overcoming institutional constraints and opening up a region of presidential immunity while delighting his political base at the same time. Trump publicly praised the Justice Department on Wednesday for reversing his demand for a stiff jail term for Stone following his own critical late night tweet which laid bare fears of blatant interference in

US bedrock justice. "I want to thank the Justice Department for seeing this horrible thing. And I didn't speak to them by the way, just so you understand. They saw the horribleness of a nine-year sentence for doing nothing," the president told reporters. He noted that the four prosecutors who left the Stone case "hit the road", raising the prospect that their efforts did not bring transparency to the administration and only served to weaken the Government further and make it more pliable for the president.

SIMPLY BEAUTIFUL

Beauty - By Jill O'Donoghue

Jill is available for advice and beauty consultations, at Killarney Toning & Beauty Studio. Call 064 6632966

Your skin will thank you Facials aren’t just for women - men are starting to look after themselves more too. I have seen a massive increase in the men coming into the studio for waxing and manicure/pedicures. They are always so curious about facials. I always tell them we are private and confidential, no one will ever know what treatment they are having, and this helps put them at ease. although it’s becoming more accepted. Having to shave every day causes its own set of problems leading to bumps, irritations and redness. Men’s facial treatments are a great way to start making steps towards better skin and a smoother shave - your skin will thank you! The exfoliating stage of the facial uses a salicylic acid and glycolic peel to deeply exfoliate and help clear the skin, preventing future spots. A thorough cleansing daily with the correct products, leads to a smoother, cleaner, less painful shave afterwards. It’s important to replace the razor regularly and clean properly after each shave not to spread spots.

With proper care, using a steamer with ozone, which has anti-bacterial properties, softens the skin enough to aid blackheads, clogged pores, and impurities without harming skin. The massage part of facial will help to improve and restore the glow, brightness and texture to your skin. So why not book in your husband, dad, brother, friend etc., or guys just book yourself - each treatment includes a cleansing steam, exfoliation, hydration, rejuvenation with a relaxing neck, shoulder and scalp massage. For the month of February we are offering Buy Three Get One Free on men’s facials. It’s a great offer and the best way to start is having one each season. You only need four a year to see the best results. Call Jill for more info or book an appointment 064 6632966.

BUTEYKO PROFESSIONALS INTERNATIONAL

How Buteyko can help you Qualified Buteyko practioner, Daniel Cremin, offers advice on this doctor-developed all-natural approach. Imagine the life possibilities with fewer asthma attacks. Imagine the life possibilities when you can handle stress/ anxiety better. Imagine the life possibilities if you get a great night’s sleep and wake up fully rested. Buteyko uses no medication, supplements or devices, no drugs just breathing exercises. Hyperventilation or over breathing is linked with asthma, anxiety, allergies, snoring, sleepy apnoea, high mucus levels, phlegm and other respiratory problems. Daniel is offering a Buteyko Breathing Technique Course on February 27 at 7.30pm to 9.30pm. Daniel likes to emphasise that this course is all about bringing into play what you already have yourself. He emphasises that we all have an inbuilt mechanism that helps us deal with most ailments through breathing properly. Sleep is a healing, renewing process when we breath correctly. Sleep is free, unless you breathe correctly you cannot sleep correctly. It is the same

with stress and when we focus on our breathing we focus on our healing in so many areas of our life. In this workshop Daniel will tailor his class to your specific needs. Basically he stands in front of the group and will very simply explain what proper breathing really is. As simple as that. Poor circulation of the hands and feet is also something that many people suffer from and Daniel would like to add that Buteyko breathing technique can overcome this very common complaint. So, why not go along and focus on your breathing.

Killarney’s answer to Roddy Doyle Dublin native Paddy Osborne - a well-known figure in Killarney Legion and Killarney Celtic FC circles – has penned a novel about the a mismatched football team that enjoys an unprecedented cup run. The dark comedy called ‘Baxter’s Boys’ was launched at the Killarney Brewery on Wednesday night. Based in the north inner city of Dublin, where Paddy grew up, the story traces the lives of team members as they bond and share life experiences during a previously unheard of run of success for their small soccer team. The book explores socials issues like loneliness, drink and drug addiction and single parent-hood. Paddy, who is a member of a local drama group and has penned short ten-minute plays, put the idea to the BBC as a screenplay 17 years ago. When that failed to get over the final hurdle he parked the idea until three years ago and when he decided to turn it into a novel. His ten-minute plays include what he described as the Irish version of ‘The Hangover’ which tells the story of two Irish men waking up one morning in possession of the Sam Maguire Cup and having no idea

how they ended up with it. The play as been performed at Courtney’s Bar in Killarney. “There is no doubt I drew inspiration for the book from my time growing up in the north inner city,” Paddy told the Killarney Advertiser. “Sport is the bond that brings people together, the Kerry man in it is the cute fellow, but it explores social issues, the most-educated man in the story is also the man who ends up homeless.” Paddy also drew on his vast sporting knowledge to create the characters in the book. He is a Legion GAA committee member, a former Killarney Celtic FC committee member a role he had to rescind when he became an FAI registered referee. His son Robert plays League of Ireland football with Cobh Ramblers and his father Paddy Snr is a former All-Ireland boxing champion. Paddy lives near the Ross Road in Killarney, is married to Liz O’Sullivan and is a horticulturist with Kerry County Council in Tralee, where amongst other things, he looks after the famous Rose Garden in Tralee Town Park. The book is available from Eason in Killarney.

FIFTH GENERATION: The fifth generation of Opel's Corsa has arrived in Ireland and will include an electric version for the first time

Fifth generation Opel Corsa arrives in Ireland One of the most hotly anticipated new cars to go on sale in 2020, the all-new fifth generation Corsa has arrived in Ireland and will soon appear in the county’s main Opel dealer, Ahern’s Garage, Castleisland. It offers reduced fuel consumption, with every variant of the new model emitting less CO2 than the most efficient versions of the Corsa currently on offer. Thanks to its lightweight design, the new Corsa weighs up to 108kg less than the outgoing model. This means that every new Corsa benefits from improved performance and handling, and increased efficiency, whether it’s powered by an electric motor or conventional engine. Despite losing around 10 percent of its weight, the Corsa retains similar dimensions to the outgoing model at 4.06m,

with five doors as standard. As well as high-efficiency petrol and diesel models, an all-electric Corsa-e, the first-ever electric Corsa, arrives in Ireland later this year. The Corsa-e offers a range of 320km, a maximum power output of 100kW/136PS and maximum torque of 260Nm. Thanks to the instant torque provided by an electric motor, drivers can accelerate from 0 to 60mph in just 7.6 seconds Some of the car’s safety features include ‘Lane Keep Assist’, appearing for the first time in the Corsa. ‘Side Blind Spot Alert’ uses ultrasonic sensors in the front and rear bumpers to alert the driver to any moving objects in the blind spots on either side of the car, as well as towards the rear. If a moving object is detected, a warning symbol lights up in the corresponding exterior mirror.

Killarney motorcycle racer eyes British Superbike Championship Killarney Motorcycle racer Kevin Coyne has set his sights on competing in the British Superbike Championship later this year. The 17-year-old will compete in both the Irish and Northern Irish Supersport Championship on board his Kawasaki Ninja 400. If everything goes according to plan, he hopes to enter the two final rounds of the British Super Bike Championship, at Donington Park on October 2 to 4 and Brands Hatch on October 16 to 18. Coyne started racing last year and finished third in the junior category races on three occasions before graduating to the Superbike class late last year. However, a testing accident ruled him out of action for the remainder of the year, but he did lend his Kawasaki Ninja 400 to Tipperary racer Oisin Maher for the Brands Hatch BSB round last season and this stirred his ambition to race there himself. “The level of racing in Britain is much higher than Ireland and if you look at all the Irish names that have made it, they have all raced in the BSB, Coyne told the Killarney Advertiser. His season will begin with a three-day test at the Circuito de Velocidad de Cart-

Advice - By Shane O’Sullivan Shane is available for advice and fitness consultations, Call 087 403 0894 or email info@activate.ie • www.activate.ie

Daily exercise can boost children’s exam grades Most parents are aware that physical activity is good for children – as it can help to improve their sense of self and have a positive impact on their mental health and well-being. But it’s less well known that being fit and active can also help to boost children’s academic performance. Recent studies of primary school children, shows that children who are more active perform better in key stage one results in reading, writing and mathematics than less active children – achieving grades that were either average or above average for each subject. Studies looked at how the children’s weight and height changed over the school year. All the children gained weight, but less active children appeared to gain weight at a steeper rate than active children. This may mean these children – who currently have a normal weight and body mass – may be at risk of becoming overweight or obese in the future.

NOT ENOUGH EXERCISE

A report from Sport England shows that children who enjoy exercise, have confidence in their physical abilities and understand why exercise is important, are more likely to be active regularly. The same report also shows that these children do, on average, twice as much physical activity compared with children who don’t enjoy sport and exercise. The Department of Health recommends children do at least 60 minutes of physical activity every day – but many children fail to meet these recommendations. This is in keeping with figures that show that only 19 percent of Irish, 17.5 percent of English, 38 percent of Scottish, 51 percent of Welsh and 12 percent of Northern Irish children meet the recommended

minimum exercise levels. Of course, not all children naturally love exercise – and many dread PE lessons, team sports, and certain games. Indeed, research shows that children who get regular encouragement and who have access to facilities are more likely to be and stay active.

BE A ROLE MODEL

Given that research shows the impact physical activity can have on academic performance and growth, it’s clear that children need to be encouraged to be active and given time to play regularly at home, in school and in the local community. Children should walk more, run, cycle, use their physical toys such as scooters, go to local playgrounds, dance, swim and play varied sports. Children should also be encouraged to travel to school on foot or by bike where possible and sit less often and for shorter periods of time. Importantly, children also need to have positive role models. They need to see parents, family members, teachers and members of the community, enjoying being physically active on a regular basis. This is important because children who are active regularly during childhood are more likely to develop into adults who are active and exercise. And adults who exercise regularly are more likely to live happier and healthier lives than those who do not. Our Activate Kids and Youth program is the perfect antidote to the regimented training styles of certain sports, and teaches children and teenagers to enjoy health and fitness and explore the potential of their bodies whilst learning safe and effective exercise. Chat to our Kids and Youth coach Shane at shane@activate.ie for further information.

Tina Turner tribute in Killarney next month The UK’s official number one Tina Turner tribute act, which is the longest-running tribute to the ‘Queen of Rock and Roll’ – will make its way to the Gleneagle INEC Arena next month. March 6 is the date that will see the stage light up for the special show, which has a Lifetime Achievement Award under its belt. The cast and crew of ‘Totally Tina’ are pulling out all the stops this year with the promise of a brand new, custom-made performance featuring a whole host of fresh ideas, coupled with the band’s now-famous humour. The show is designed to make the audience feel that the legendary performer is right back in front of them, strutting her stuff on the most famous legs in show business! This year’s production features all the favourite Tina Turner hits, her best duets, much-loved covers and the odd twist in the tale.

‘Jumping Jack Flash’, ‘Honky Tonky Woman’, ‘Get Back’, ‘It’s Only Rock and Roll’ and ‘The Bitch is Back’ have been added to a set which includes ‘Simply The Best’, ‘Proud Mary’, ‘Nutbush City Limits’ and ‘Private Dancer’ to name a few. All the songs are enhanced by the customary flourish of sparkling stiletto heels, flamboyant tail feathers, high energy dance routines, and musical genius. There’s plenty of audience engagement and post-show ‘meet and greets’ too, making the show more personal. In fact, it’s probably the closest thing to a live Tina Turner concert! Tickets from €25 available from www. inec.ie.

CONCERT: Local man Ben Quinlan plans to raise funds for the homeless with a concert this coming March. Photo: Grigoriy Geniyevskiy

Former X Factor contestant launches concert for homeless Local man Ben Quinlan, a previous contestant of the X Factor is raising awareness and funds for the homeless with his own concert in March. | By Grigoriy Geniyevskiy Also Ireland's Alternative Eurovision winner, Ben is launching his debut album at his first concert ‘A Night To Remember – Magical’ at The Friary Church Killarney, on March 13, at 7pm. All proceeds are going to homeless shelters in Ireland. Ben will be performing his originals and soulful songs accompanied by a drummer and a guitarist. “I’ve been in the process of developing music for a long time,” Ben told the Killarney Advertiser. “The main song in the album is actually

the one which won the alternative Eurovision competition. The songs will be different from pop, rock and ballads. There’ll be some traditional Irish music mixed with something more modern as well. I like the combination and there’s a lot of experimenting involved.” It’s a healing album for the people and humanity, he added. “It’s very important that people buy tickets to help the homeless and bring awareness for a good cause.” People can buy tickets online at www. show4me.com: campaign a night to remember concert, or phone him on 089 420 1823.

Keelin Shanley’s Killarney connection RTÉ broadcaster Keelin Shanley who died last week was wellknown in Killarney.

FRESH FILMS: Kenmare Youth Film Productions’ film 'The Doll' has been selected for the Cork heat of the Fresh Film Festival. Pictured: Leone Fiorito Wright, Johnny Horgan, Ben Harrington, Patrick O’Connor-Mason, Harry Thompson and Mieke Vanmechelen (KCC Filmmaker in Residence).

Kenmare Youth Film selected for Cork festival A short film by the Kenmare Youth Film Productions’ has been selected for the Cork heat of the Fresh Film Festival next month. ‘The Doll’ will be screened at Triskel Arts Centre on March 5. It was also selected by First Cut! Youth Film Festival which takes place on March 11 - 14 in Youghal, Co. Cork. The crew are made up of director Johnny Horgan, writer and actor Leone Fiorito Wright, sound artist Harry Thompson, actor Patrick O’Connor Mason, actor Alanna Loughnane and cameraman Ben Harrington. With the help of Kenmare Family Resource Centre, Kerry County Council Filmmaker in Residence Mieke Vanmechelen and Niall Wright, this short film was shot over the summer in and around Kenmare. “The film is a psychological thriller that

follows the main character Talia as she tries to cope with her obsessive past... and present,” Mieke explained. “We see her struggle with close relationships, her own identity and troubled home life. All of these events combined escalate to a critical situation with an unexpected outcome.” “Before I always had my mind set on what I wanted to do after school, but now I am considering a career in film,” Johnny Horgan added. In advance of the screenings the crew will be travelling to Limerick to take their places on the In-ternational Jury Panel of Fresh Film Festival.

Her aunt, Betty Crosbie, is one of the main people behind the Friends of the Children of Chernobyl. Ms Shanley passed away on Saturday after a battle with cancer. She was aged 51. With over 20 years’ experience as a journalist and broadcaster, Keelin was the much-loved and respected presenter of RTÉ’s ‘Six One News’. Keelin joined ‘Prime Time’, RTÉ’s flagship current affairs television programme, in 1999 where she worked as a reporter and presenter. In her time there, she made a number of acclaimed documentaries, many of which focused on social issues and gave

voice to people on the margins of Irish society. In 2002, she pioneered the ‘Prime Time Investigates’ strand with ‘Saturday Night, Sunday Morning’, an hour-long ‘Prime Time’ special on binge-drinking culture. Keelin went on to make further ‘Prime Time Investigates’ on health inequality, cocaine abuse, homelessness, people trafficking, deportations and teenage criminality among other subjects. Her work on ‘Prime Time’ and ‘Prime Time Investigates’ resulted in Keelin winning three IFTA awards, a national media award, a Radharc award and a Justice Media award. A celebration of her life was held on Wednesday at St Paul’s Church, Glenageary.

Three year plan being formulated for Killarney basketball Over 20 people attended a public meeting on the development and future of National League basketball in Killarney on Wednesday night. The meeting held in Scotts Hotel, was chaired by Aidan Quirke and featured opinions from past players, officers and

coaches. The Scotts Lakers Chairperson, Aidan Quirke, highlighted the need for a new plan and structure for the next three years to reflect the needs of the club. “It has been a hugely successful three years for Scotts Lakers on the floor, with consistent progression and great

games,” Aidan said. “We are currently second in the league with four games to go. Now was an opportune time to stop and look at the next three years,” he said. Details of the three year plan are being formulated and committee members are now seeking new club officers for

2020/21. It was highlighted that the costs associated with running a National League team are high and not sustainable in the long term, he added. The costs of accommodation and rental of the Killarney Sports and Leisure Centre are also a concern for the club.

In loving memory of a precious son and wonderful brother Denis Michael Dennehy, Artigallivan, Headford who died on 22nd February 2011

Every day in some small way, Memories of you come our way, Though absent, you are always near Still missed, loved and always dear.

There is a path of beautiful memories, From here to heaven above, That keeps us very close to you, It’s called the path of love, And down that path of memories, We softly thread today, All our thoughts are with you, As life goes on it’s way, Life goes sadly on without you, The days have turned to years, But each day has held a thousand memories, And a million silent tears

In loving memory of Betty Cronin, Tiernaboul, Killarney, who passed away on the 16th February 2019. We, her family, would like to thank all those who sympathised with us on our sad loss. Those who attended the Rosary, Funeral Mass and Burial, who sent Mass Cards and travelled long distances. We would also like to thank our relatives, neighbours and many friends for the wonderful support during and after the funeral, and those who called to our homes and brought refreshments. In loving memory of John (Jackie) Casey Ballinillane, Ballyhar Killarney who died on 21st February 1975 and his wife Noreen who died on 13th February 2018. On a quite February morning, Ye heard the Angels call, Ye took the hand of Jesus, And quietly left us all. Happy memories keep for ever, Of days when we were all together, They bring a smile, and after a tear, And always a wish that you were still here. Loved and always remembered by your daughters: Sheila, Joan, Noreen Geraldine Eileen and Catherine, sons in laws, grand children and great grand children.

Also thank you to Fr. Kieran O’Brien who was and is so supportive, for celebrating a beautifull Mass and moving homily. Thanks also to Paud and Mary for the beautiful music and singing. To Michael and Mary O’Shea and staff for their sensitive and professional handling of arrangements.

Though your smile is gone forever, And your hand we cannot touch, Still we have so many memories Of the one we loved so much.

As this sad month returns once more, Silently opening memories’ door, No length of time can take away, My thoughts of you from day to day.

Your memory is our keepsake With which we will never part, God has you in his keeping, We have you in our hearts.

If all the world was ours to give, We’d give it, yes, and more, Just to see again the face we love, Come smiling through the door.

It is sad to walk the road alone, Instead of side by side, But to all there comes a moment When the ways of life divide.

There is a link death cannot sever, Love and remembrance lasts forever. Sadly missed by your loving wife Maura x

Animals. Cute hoors. Fair weather fans. Whatever way you look at it, followers of Kerry’s senior football team have a reputation. Last Sunday, Adam Moynihan joined a busload of Kerry fans on the 924km, 15-hour round trip to Tyrone to find out the truth about the county’s most passionate supporters The taxi driver bringing me to O’Callaghan’s bus depot offers little by way of encouragement. It’s 5am on a dark and miserable Sunday morning and I’ve just told him that I’m heading north for the National League Division 1 match between old rivals Tyrone and Kerry. “Jesus, that’s an awful jaunt,” he says, almost in disbelief. “And sure, that game mightn’t go ahead at all.” He’s right. Storm Ciara is in full effect DEDICATED: Two Kerry supporters look on as a young Tyrone boy chases his ball down the terrace at the scoreboard end of Páirc Arthur Mallon, Edendork.

and the wind and rain that is currently battering his vehicle from all angles is due to continue well into the afternoon and possibly beyond. A pitch inspection will take place later in the morning and there’s a decent chance that the fixture, which is scheduled for 2pm, will be called off. Of course by that point, many Kerry supporters, myself and my fellow passengers included, will already be halfway up

the country. “Good luck to you,” he says very earnestly as we reach our destination. “I hope we win.”

THE JOURNEY The coach is comprised of 17 men, women and children, many of whom are season ticket holders who regularly travel to Kerry’s away matches with O’Callaghan’s, and, because of the length

of the journey, two drivers. Our pilots Con and Connie explain that a larger bus would usually be required but the weather and the distance may have deterred some people on this particular occasion. Those who weren’t put off are in fine form. As the bus pulls out of the coach yard, a woman recognises a fellow passenger from a previous trip. “We’re mad to be going up today,” she says with a smile. “This is about the earliest we’ve ever been out,” the man replies. Their tone is polite and casual, but you can hear the pride in their voices. Almost everyone in the entire county would sooner be (and is) wrapped up in bed. | Continued on page 64

SPORT

For these loyal football fans, there’s nowhere else they’d rather be. Before we reach Castleisland, the previous weekend’s victory over Galway has been well and truly dissected and by the time we reach the county bounds, there isn’t a footballer on the Kerry panel who hasn’t been analysed to within an inch of his life. The fans are mostly positive and understanding, although criticism is meted out too where appropriate. I’m impressed by their knowledge of Kerry football, which can only be described as encyclopaedic. At around 8am, as the first hint of daylight creeps over the horizon, excitement about today’s match is building. But now the issue of whether or not there will even be a match comes sharply into view. “They’ll hardly call it off now,” someone offers, before being reminded of Inniskeen in 2018. Kerry were due to play Monaghan in the league almost two years ago to the day but heavy snow forced officials to cancel the game at the last minute. Frustratingly, the O’Callaghan bus was at the Red Cow roundabout in Dublin when the news broke. They had no choice but to turn back and head for home.

We’re passing Dundalk when we finally get some white smoke. Healy Park is flooded but the match will go ahead at an alternate venue. Great. Now where in the name of God is Edendork? With no confirmation forthcoming from either county board, the prospect of history repeating itself looms large. We stop for full Irish breakfasts at Junction 14, a service station off the M7 in Monasterevin, Co. Kildare. Calling here (or to Barack Obama Plaza in Moneygall, Co. Offaly) is a rite of passage for any travelling Kerry supporter heading to a match in Dublin or further north. An hour later, at around 9.20am, we’re passing by Dundalk when we finally get some white smoke. Healy Park in Omagh is flooded but the match will go ahead at an alternate venue. Great. Now where in the name of God is Edendork? The sudden appearance of a multitude of Union Jacks lets us know that we have now left the European Union. We drive through the heart of Armagh and cross into Tyrone, motoring through the village of Moy along the way. Moy

14.2.2020 is the home parish of Tyrone footballer-turned-pundit Seán Cavanagh, who in 2019 controversially described Kerry supporters as “animals”. Unfortunately, Seán is not on hand to watch the zoo roll into town, and on we power to nearby Edendork. We arrive at the pitch well before throw-in. We’re slow to venture out into the driving rain but when an Edendork official invites us up to the clubhouse for tea and biscuits, we disembark. Upstairs we meet the families of the Kerry players and some fellow supporters who have made the long journey up by car. Down at ground level, at around ten past one, a local youngster is standing with his friends by the players’ entrance. “I can’t believe we’re going to see David Clifford,” he says as he giddily readies his camera. When Clifford appears, the boy resists the urge to approach his hero and instead snaps a photo from a respectful distance. It was the last bit of restraint a Tyrone man would show around Clifford for the rest of the day.

x

THE MATCH

The match itself is almost as tough for the supporters as it is for the players. The violent wind blows the rain sideways from the scoreboard end down the pitch and through the terraces, as the soaking wet playing surface is quickly cut up by 30 pairs of boots. With the wind at their backs, Kerry build up a first-half lead but Tyrone, cheered on by a boisterous home crowd, claw it back in the second thanks in no small part to Edendork players Niall Morgan and Darren McCurry. Mickey Harte’s side win by a single point. We trudge back to the bus cold, wet and defeated but all things considered, the mood is still fairly positive. “There’s a long year there yet,” a wise head says, and we all nod in agreement. I sleep for a good portion of the journey home. As I drift off, those around me are talking about football. When I awake a few hours later, they’re still talking about football. They probably talked about football in the car home, and when they got out of bed the next morning there’s a good chance they talked about football again. We pull into Killarney around half 10 and the only thing on my mind is my bed. The others, however, are already speaking in excited tones about the trip to Monaghan on March 15. Fair weather fans? Not on this bus. Cute hoors? A few, perhaps. Animals? The people I travelled to Tyrone with the last day are some of the fiercest Kerry supporters around, and they are as decent and as knowledgeable as anyone you could ever hope to meet. Far from animals, but certainly a different breed of football fan.

CHANCE: Paul Geaney gets his shot off despite the best efforts of Tyrone's Tiernan McCann. Pic: David Fitzgerald/Sportsfile.

Clifford’s red card injustice scuppers Kerry’s chances It was never going to be easy for Kerry to win away to Tyrone and they came up just short, losing out by a single point in Round 3 of the National League on Sunday last. | By Eamonn Fitzgerald There were plenty of talking points to deal with but the most controversial one of all was the sending off of David Clifford with just 10 minutes remaining. He was on a yellow card when he was tumbled to the ground by Ben McDonald, who had come on as a sub for Tyrone. McDonald pinned Clifford to the ground but referee Fergal Kelly did not see what happened and consulted his umpires. The umpire and referee took the easy way out and decided on a yellow card for each player. It was a blatant injustice to the Kerry captain who was targeted by the opposition. He couldn’t believe it and was visibly very upset by the sending off. Clifford was Kerry’s most valuable player and Kerry were deprived of the man most likely to grind out an equalising point in those late and frantic minutes. In the end, Tyrone kicked on for victory and two valuable league points.

PITCH SWITCH

Hurricane Ciara meant switching the game from the county grounds in Omagh to the club grounds of Edendork, Páirc Arthur Mallon, which cut up badly and made handling of the ball very difficult. Kerry really lost this game in the first half when they led by 0-8 points to 0-4 at half-time. After playing with the gale, four points was never going to be enough of a cushion. They could have been another 1-4 up, but scores were hard to come by and frees presented the best opportunities for points. There was only one goal opportunity and that fell to Paul Geaney, but he shot poorly after being put through and goalkeeper Niall Morgan’s outstretched leg put the ball out for a 45. Geaney got no score in the game. David Clifford and Seán O‘Shea were most prominent and ended with tallies of six points each. Kerry’s only other

EDENDORK scorer was Micheál Burns who kicked a long-range point in the first half. Man of the Match Darren McCurry played an important role but equally important was goalkeeper Niall Morgan. Not alone did he save Geaney’s attempt at goal, but he made the long journey out of goal worthwhile by kicking four magnificent points from frees. It is unwise to be too critical of players making so many handling mistakes in the most difficult of conditions. Tyrone found it so hard to contain David Clifford and targeted him for special attention. If he had been on for the full game, Kerry could well have got a draw. Seán O’Shea also did well, as did Burns until he was withdrawn for Diarmuid O’Connor in the 54th minute. Kerry lost Stephen O’Brien after 26 minutes and this gave Dara Moynihan his chance to impress. That he did and was on the ball a lot, especially in the second half when he carried the ball to great effect.

Liam Kearney and Jack Barry found the going tough at midfield. Credit the much-maligned Kerry defenders who stopped the rot and kept Kerry within a point of Tyrone for most of the game. In the end, the sending off of Kerry’s best player scuppered their chances of an equaliser.

PETER KEANE

In a post-match interview Kerry boss Peter Keane spoke the truth when he said that under such difficult playing conditions one could not expect to learn much about players. There is no game this weekend and then they have Meath at home in the Fitzgerald Stadium on February 23. A better pitch and hopefully better weather will provide a better opportunity to assess the progress of the 2020 Kerry team, and whether or not they will be capable of ousting the Dubs in the championship.

Athletic aiming to close gap on leaders Island Killarney Athletic will be hoping to close the gap on undefeated Premier Division leaders Castleisland when they visit George O’Callaghan Park on Sunday morning. The Blues are currently in fifth but they have played just four league fixtures since the campaign kicked off in September. If Stuart Templeman’s side can win their games in hand they will move up to the top two, but that will be easier said than done. If recent meetings are anything to go by, this weekend’s clash with Castleisland could be one of the toughest matches they’ll play all year. Island are in excellent form so far this season and are fully deserving of their current lofty position. With seven games played, last year’s beaten league finalists have five wins and two draws and their tally of 17 points has them marginally ahead of Killarney Celtic, who have a game in hand. The Celts continued their winning ways last Friday night when they put eight goals past a hapless Tralee Dynamos side at Celtic Park. Shane Lowth (hat-trick), Adam O’Rourke (two), Stephen O’Mahony, Danny Roche and Lee Downing found

the target for the hosts, who could go top if results go their way this coming Sunday. MEK Galaxy picked up their first ever win in the top flight of Kerry soccer on Sunday when they defeated Classic FC in Tralee. Goals from Hubert Dziedzic (two), John Foley and Brendan Savage helped the Galácticos to a 4-1 win as they moved out of the relegation zone for the first time this season. Next up is a home game against Killarney Celtic on Sunday. Kickoff in the Dragon’s Den is at 2pm.

YOUTHS

Killarney Celtic had an emphatic youths league victory over bitter rivals Killarney Athletic last weekend as strikes from Pádraic Looney (two), Jack McCarthy, Erin Moloney and Dylan Callaghan propelled them to a 5-0 win. Meanwhile, in another local derby, Ballyhar Dynamos secured a 3-1 away win over Mastergeeha. Philip O’Leary gave Geeha the lead but goals by Chris Palmer and Bryan Burke had Dynamos ahead by half-time. Burke added a second after the interval to round off the scoring as Ballyhar moved up joint third in the southern section of the youths league.

It was their first time working together. “It really was a great weekend with Osian,” O’Sullivan said. “I didn’t really know what to expect coming to Wales with a new driver, a new team and a new car, but it all worked well. Osian is easy to get on with and a great driver. “Right from the pre-event test and the recce we hit it off straight away and we learnt an awful lot during the event. To set equal second fastest time on our first stage together and to then go on without making any mistakes to finish second overall, well, we have to be pleased with that, don’t we?” |

PRES GYM

| By Eamonn Keogh Scotts Lakers continued their winning streak with a hard fought victory over the Ulster University Elks in the Presentation Gym last Saturday night. The switch of venue was necessary due to the election count in the local sports centre and it took a while for the Lakers to readjust and get familiar with the rings. The Killarney side recovered from a low-scoring first half and laid the foundation for this victory with a powerful third quarter where they outscored their opponents 32-21. Shane McCarthy’s team are now two wins clear of third place Fr Mathews with just four games remaining, although the Cork outfit do have one match in hand.

OFF THE MARK

In a closely contested opening quarter, the Lakers got off the mark with baskets from Aaron Jackson and three-pointers

from Xavier Talton and Brian O'Neill. However, Ulster Elks enjoyed a slight upper-hand thanks to Aaron Rooney and Shane O'Connor and the visitors led 15-16 at the end of the first period. The Lakers struggled to find their scoring touch throughout the second quarter and could only manage 11 points with several three-point attempts failing to materialise. The Elks enjoyed their best spell with Kadeem Smithen particularly impressive and the visitors led 26-30 at half-time. The home side finally began to play to their true potential in the third. Big Toby Christensen, who had not scored in the first half, began to make his presence felt and the Lakers enjoyed a 41-36 advantage midway through the third period. Christensen chipped in with 15 points in this spell while sharpshooter O'Neill sank three big three-pointers and the Lakers led 58-51 as the game entered the final quarter. Elks stayed in contention and a three-pointer from Michael Dougherty

levelled matters at 58 points each. Lakers responded well through the dominant Toby Christensen and two more three-pointers from Brian O'Neill to open up a six-point lead midway through the final period. Jackson and Christensen increased the advantage to 10 points after that and there was no way back for Elks as the Lakers held on to win by nine in the end. The Lakers face a difficult away double-header in Donegal and Sligo this

weekend. The next home game will be against Fr Mathews in Killarney on February 22.

SCOTTS LAKERS: Toby Christensen (23), Brian O’Neill (18), Aaron Jackson (18), Xavier Talton (12), Séamus Brosnan (3), Mark Greene (3) and Carlton Cuff (2). ULSTER ELKS: Kadeem Smithen (19), Aaron Rooney (18), Conor Gervin (10).
