Kelleher elected Mayor of Kerry
| By Michelle Crean Killarney Councillor Niall Kelleher this week said that it’s a huge honour to have been elected Mayor of Kerry. The 33-year-old, who lives in Headford was elected as Cathaoirleach of Kerry County Council, just weeks into his second term as an elected representative for Fianna Fail. He is the 64th person to occupy the chairperson’s role since the Council was established in 1899 and says over the next 12 months’ he plans to not only focus on countywide issues but prioritise Killarney’s biggest problems including parking and traffic, business rates amongst others. On being elected as Mayor, he said it’s “a great honour”. “It’s something a lot of people don’t get in a lifetime,” Cllr Kelleher told the Killarney Advertiser this week. “In politics, you can be lucky, but you also get what you put into it. I intend to leave my own footprint on the role of Mayor of Kerry.” Speaking about the local election and the results he received he said he was very proud. “Personally, I’m exceptionally proud of my result.” As Mayor of Kerry, he plans to focus on many things, including Greenways, business rates, which he says are draconian, and employment. However, particularly in the Killarney area, he says he will focus on parking and traffic issues in the town, Aras Padraig car park, and said decisions need to made regarding the Pretty Polly site.
BIG STAGE: Killarney siblings Steph and Paul O'Sullivan’s band Greywind will perform at the legendary Isle of Wight Festival this weekend and will share space with chart topper George Ezra.

“One of the biggest things I want to see completed in the short term is Lewis Road Junction,” he said. “The Mission Road and Muckross Road traffic needs to be prioritised and we need our new outer relief road. This is something that has to be an objective of this Council term. There’s a plan there already. There’s no excuse in coming up with the route and getting it from national Government to get it built.” A new roundabout at Deerpark also needs to be achieved during the lifetime of this Government, he added. “With Pretty Polly, I believe there’s six expressions of interest into it. There needs
to be decisions made. We have to be daring to take challenges.” The Rathmore native said that he will also be focusing on his home village particularly it’s redevelopment. “That’s something I’m looking forward to seeing in the next few months,” Kelleher, who has been Chairman of the Kerry Joint Policing Committee and Chairman of the Local Community Development Committee, said. The father of three, who is married to Linda, thanked the people of Killarney for their support. “I thank the people of the Killarney Electoral Area who supported me in such great numbers on May 24 which puts me in this position.”
Gleeson new Mayor of Killarney | By Michelle Crean Killarney Councillor Michael Gleeson will today (Friday) be elected as Mayor of Killarney at County Buildings in Tralee. The 73-year-old Kerry Independent Alliance Councillor was offered the position following a Mayoral pack between himself, Fianna Fail’s Niall Kelleher who is the newly elected Mayor of Kerry, Independent Councillor Brendan Cronin, and Labour’s Marie Moloney. It’s believed the
position had been offered to Independent Councillor Niall ‘Botty’ O’Callaghan, who refused it. Councillor Gleeson, from Clasheen, Killarney, was recently re-elected to the Killarney Municipal District after securing 1,983 first preference votes. He has been involved with Killarney Looking Good and worked on projects such as the Cahersiveen Greenway, the provision of a fully staffed Stroke Unit in UHK and the refund of money to Nursing Home residents who were wrongly charged by the State.
NEW MAYOR OF KILLARNEY: Killarney Councillor Michael Gleeson will today (Friday) be elected as Mayor of Killarney.
Killarney band Greywind will perform in front of 70,000 music fans and share space with chart topper George Ezra at the legendary Isle of Wight Festival this weekend. The two-piece alternative rock band, formed by siblings Steph and Paul O'Sullivan, has already performed at the Reading, Leeds and Download festivals in the UK. The four-day festival got underway yesterday (Thursday), but the Rock Road duo are not due to play until Saturday night when they will share space with the likes of Ezra, Fat Boy Slim, Rick Astley and KT Tunstall. “We are all very excited,” their father Paul told the Killarney Advertiser. “This is one of the most famous and iconic festivals in the world.” Greywind left Killarney early yesterday morning ahead of a rehearsal in Southend today (Friday), before travelling to the Isle of Wight. On their return they will record a new song and on the back of that will tour Ireland. They have promised to hold their first gig in Killarney in November or December next.

26 miles, 26 counties over 26 hours for Kerry Hospice Foundation A group of Killarney runners are planning to undertake The Great Irish Marathon, in aid of Kerry Hospice Foundation. | By Sean Moriarty The group hope to run a mile in a very county in 26 hours later this month to raise funds for palliative care in the county. They will undertake 26 miles in 26 counties in 26 hours – a mile in every county – on June 21/22, to raise much needed funds for the charity. One of the runners, Maura O’Carroll from Rock Road, said the group are doing it in memory of her mother Patsy O’Keeffe, who passed away last November. “It is madness,” Maura told the Killarney Advertiser. “We will start in Mitchels-
town and run one mile in County Cork and Tipperary, we have the rest the route well worked out to save time and hopefully we will be back in Killarney the following day.” Former Killarney Community School teacher Andrea Thornton was behind the idea having done a similar event four years ago in memory of one her colleagues Vivian O’Shea who died in 2013. “I can take none of the credit for coming up with the idea,” Maura added. “But it is a continuation of that as both Vivian and my mother were well-known in town.” O’Callaghan’s Coaches will provide transport for the 13 runners.
HERO MEETING: Classmates, Brian O’Sullivan and Sean Cox, both aged 11, met their hero Shane Long after last Friday night’s Euro 2020 qualifier against Denmark.
Unforgettable soccer trip for two Kerry school boys A trip to see the Republic of Ireland soccer team take on Denmark in Copenhagen last Friday night turned into a memorable trip for two Kilcummin school boys. | By Sean Moriarty Classmates, Brian O’Sullivan and Sean Cox, both aged 11, were taken to see the Euro 2020 qualifier at the Danish capital’s Parken Stadium by their dads Brian and Tom. The trip itself should have been a highlight for the two soccer mad youngsters but what happened afterwards will mean the two school pals will never forget the match. Ahead of the game they each made up posters asking for their respective idols - Brian is a huge Shane Duffy fan and his classmate Sean is a James McClean fan to give them their jerseys after the match. “When I saw them going off with their poster I thought they had no chance,” Brian’s mother Maura told the Killarney Advertiser. “But they got to the stadium early and the Irish team was out practicing and saw the posters and gave the two boys the thumbs up.”
History will record that Shane Long scored the equalising goal, much to the delight of Sean. After the game James McLean sought out the four Killarney fans in the crowd and handed his jersey to Tom - but Shane Duffy was unable to make it across the pitch. Sensing Sean’s disappointment the two enterprising dads made their way to the back of the stadium and met a security guard and explained their situation. The guard took their posters to the Irish team’s dressing room and a few minutes later Long appeared and met the two boys. “It was just fantastic for them,” said Maura. “Shane Long apologised that all the jerseys were gone away to be washed, but promised Sean he would get it for him.” On Tuesday of this week the FAI emailed the O’Sullivan family to say the jersey was in the post to them.
ON THE RUN: A group of Killarney runners plan to run 26 miles in 26 counties over 26 hours for Kerry Hospice Foundation.
Council confirm algae risk in National Park Dog owners are this week being advised by Kerry County Council to keep pets on a lead while walking them in the National Park as laboratory tests have confirmed the presence of a blue-green algae, which has the potential to form an algal scum. This week Council staff carried out laboratory tests and in accordance with protocols for these situations, precautionary signage has been erected at locations along the shore of Lough Leane, and those who frequent the shoreline are being advised to exercise caution, as it can be harmful to small animals. As a precaution, members of the public should ensure that dogs are kept on leads and not allowed to enter the water. The announcement comes just a week after the Killarney Advertiser reported that at least one local dog had died after coming in contact with water in the Na-
tional Park. Local vet Danny O’Sullivan treated at least one local dog for suspected algae poisoning in the last week. “Daily inspections of the shoreline will take place and further samples will be taken as required,” a Council spokesperson said. Blue-green ‘algae’ is not actually an algae but is made from Cyanobacteria which feed on nutrients in water. Cyanobacteria is harmful in other respects too as it can use up the oxygen in water and block sunlight that freshwater plants and animals need to survive . However, it is also a valuable food source for soil-based plants. A previous outbreak three years ago led to the death of a number of dogs. Outbreaks of blue-green algae occur now on an annual basis in Killarney, regardless of weather conditions, although muggy humid conditions seem to accelerate the occurrence.

Killarney cleans up in IBAL results Killarney is one of the cleanest towns in Ireland after being named third cleanest out of 40 towns nationally in the latest Irish Business Against Litter (IBAL) survey published this week. | By Sean Moriarty Only Kilkenny and Athlone are deemed cleaner than Killarney, with Tralee jumping a massive 25 places to fifth.
The news was welcomed by the Killarney Looking Good Committee and Kerry County Council who said they were very pleased with the An Taisce report which stated that Killarney streetscapes were
completely litter free. “What sets Killarney and other top-ranking towns apart is not just the lack of litter but the overall presentation and maintenance of the town centre environment like paving, seating, bollards, planted areas, visitor information notice boards. Evidence of this was particularly noticeable along High Street, Plunkett Street and College Street.” the report
stated. “The fact that the town was judged Cleaner than European norms is a great tribute to the Council staff and to the very generous Looking Good and Meitheal volunteers who give so much of their time,” Councillor Michael Gleeson, from the Killarney Looking Good Committee, said. “This is the result of a great co-operative spirit and it shows that Killarney cares deeply about the environment.” Yvonne Quill, Chairperson of the Looking Good Committee added that a huge effort has again been put in by the volunteers who participate in the organised clean-ups along with those who maintain their own areas in their own time. “An extra effort was put into the Tralee Road this year with 10 volunteers in recent weeks targeting Killarney to Farranfore on a Monday evening. It was particularly gratifying to see this getting Grade A status. We cannot be complacent though, litter and dumping is an ongoing battle that we have to keep fighting. We must continue to ensure that our town maintains the highest standards of cleanliness and welcome.” Eileen O’Donoghue, Killarney Municipal District Council Officer congratulated all those involved in achieving such high standards.
Young players set for annual Garda football blitz | By Michelle Crean 18 teams are looking forward to taking each other on at an exciting football blitz next week. The youngsters will take part in the 15th annual Killarney Garda National School 7-a-side Football Blitz, at Fitzgerald Stadium next Wednesday from 9.30am. The event began in 2005, set up by Garda Eddie Walsh, who is based in Killarney Garda Station, and Detective Pat Kelliher, who is now retired. School teams taking part this year include Faha, Lissivigeen, Tiernaboul, Coolick, Loughatane, The Mon, Kenmare, Glenbeigh, Cullina, Gneeveguilla, Boherbee, Gael Scoil, Fossa, Duagh, Barraduff, Anablah, Rathmore and St Oliver’s. Kerry players Dara Moynihan, Michael Byrnes, Gavin White and Sean O’Shea will also be there, as well as former Kerry player Colm ‘Gooch’ Cooper, to help and guide the youngsters as 40 games will be played for an hour at a time. And on the day the players will be led
out by piper Mike Milner and there will also be a minute’s silence to remember talented football player Niall McGillicuddy (16), who passed away last year, Eddie explained to the Killarney Advertiser. “Niall was a talented footballer and played with The Mon and Legion. Kil-
larney Gardai will remember him with a minute’s silence.” Eddie also explained that the blitz was set up to bring communities together. “Every year we try to make it bigger and better. It is great to be involved in promoting the GAA and the Gardai within
schools,” he said. “To date over 2,400 have played in the blitz including some who went on to win minor and senior All-Ireland medals. A lot have gone on to play with Kerry. We also have about 20 Kerry Gardai who will be helping on the day.”

Kidney recipient calls on public to carry donor card
“Have the conversation and carry a donor card” | By Sean Moriarty
GOT THE CHOP: Friends and classmates Roksana Wawro and Nadia Dudzik from Holy Cross Mercy School chopped their hair for children's charity Rapunzel. Photo: Michelle Crean
Friends chop locks for charity
Two kind-hearted nine-year-old school pals have chopped their locks to help make wigs for sick children. Friends and classmates Roksana Wawro and Nadia Dudzik, who are in Second Class in Holy Cross Mercy School, recently chopped their hair for children's charity Rapunzel. The girls, who both had hair down as far as their waists, decided last year that they wanted to help others and cut over 14 inches off each of their locks. Their hair has now been sent off to The Rapunzel Foundation, a charitable organisation that helps make special wigs for sick children. And the brave girls, who now have a brand new look, said that they are both very happy that they could help children to feel better about themselves. “It’s nice to give hair to help others,”
Roksana told the Killarney Advertiser. “I decided when I was eight to donate my hair and I wanted to let it grow as long as I could.” And she said when it came to getting the hair cut that she took it in her stride. “I wasn’t really nervous. I was really happy.” Nadia on the other hand, who has never had short hair, was a bit nervous but is glad that she did it. “My hair was the longest it ever was,” Nadia said. “I was a little bit nervous but I liked it when I looked in the mirror. It’s easier to wash now. It was fun to do and I feel good because I’ve helped someone else.”
Talking to family about being an organ donor is the most important step in ensuring your wish can happen – says local man and kidney transplant recipient Connie Brosnan - whose life was changed after receiving a kidney eight years ago. Now he’s calling on the public to carry an organ donor card – as it could be life-changing for someone waiting for a transplant. Last Sunday, the annual Ring of Kerry Honda 50 Run, an integral event in the annual Ireland BikeFest Killarney festival, raised funds for the Irish Kidney Association Kerry branch. Connie, who is on the organising committee of the Honda 50 Run amongst many other things, is a keen gardener, a regular golfer, a prominent member of the local basketball club and a committee member of local charity group. These are all pastimes you would instantly associate with an active retired person. But for Connie of Ross Road, these are all things that could have been taken from him at a blink of eye. Eight years ago he got a phone call to say he was next in line for a life-saving kidney transplant. Fast forward to 2019, and Connie says all of the above activities would not have been possible only that someone, somewhere carried an organ donor card
- and he is now calling on the entire community to carry a card to potentially save someone else’s life. “I would encourage people to have the conversation and in the event of an untimely death of a loved one, that they carry a donor card,” said Connie. Connie (70) is one of those local people that seems to be involved in everything. He is a long-time member of Killarney Golf and Fishing Club. He even won gold for the discipline at the Irish Transplant Games in 2013 - just 24 months after his life-saving operation. He is a long-serving member of St Paul’s Basketball Club and acts as the club’s ambassador when officials from visiting clubs are in town. He spent his life in Killarney National Park as he was born in a cottage in the heart of the park, and spent his working life as a gardener and caretake there, first as an employee of the McShane family and latterly under the Board of Public Works. He still volunteers as a gardener at the golf club. “I am one of the very lucky ones,” he said. “A transplant is a not cure, but is the best form of treatment. There are 50 patients in Tralee undergoing dialysis each week, and this is only keeping them ticking over, imagine all your blood being filtered through a machine, sometimes taking up to four hours.” Those interested in getting an organ donor card can contact Theresa Looney, Secretary of the Kerry Branch of the Irish Kidney Association, on 087 205 9205.

Columnist ANNE LUCEY gives her take on happenings in Killarney, Kerry and beyond
Is Mission Road the new scrap heap for public monuments? Could there have been a more appropriate setting for a large monument to a ploughing event that took place 65 years ago in Killarney? I am talking about the Cairn of Peace Monument to the World Ploughing Championship held at Lackabane in 1954, which has been erected under the trees on the Mission Road, around two miles from the farm where the event actually took place. It is one of the most bizarre, surreal looking things I have ever looked at, and the sylvan setting, amongst trees and woods leading onto the Pugin designed cathedral, one of the finest of the renowned architect’s creations, makes it even more bizarre. Put this in a field, at Lackabane maybe, where it was actually held. That is now a golf course and it will be fine. But where it is and as it is, it looks like a thing jettisoned from outer space, from a space ship, perhaps. It is far too big for a start. The lettering is askew and then the whole thing is capped with a moon like globe at one corner and a plough overseeing it all. One would be forgiven for thinking this is something astronomical - the plough in the night sky, perhaps. But while it is not to do with the night sky, it is indeed astronomical. It looms like a crash barrier, and with respect, the “furrows” look like sods of turf. And is Killarney that associated with ploughing or even with agriculture? I have it on good authority there is only one competitive ploughman in the vi-
cinity and perhaps no more than eight people actually plough in Killarney. I asked the Council who vets these public monuments and who determines the size? Apparently no-one really. It was the National Ploughing Association, i.e. Anna May McHugh, and the matter had come before Killarney Municipal District a number of times. Can it be moved and carted off somewhere more appropriate? The Mission Road badly needs oversight. I would love to know who gave the go ahead for the breach in the wall outside the new Fassbender apartments at Lower New Street. There, iron railings, a bit like picket fencing, show off the very nice mews style houses. Is this a precedent, and does it mean the rest of the wall is to be broken down piecemeal to allow development to front the road? According to the planning condition – planning condition 8 in fact - there is to be a wall at least 1.5 metres in height at the location. There is a bit of toing and froing between the planners and the agents and mention of an engineer about a railing on the file, though whether the railing is part of the 1.5m wall or to go on top of it, is not at all clear from the documents. The Council have not been able to clear this up either, but said in a state-
Local elections throw up interesting questions Three Healy-Rae candidates in a General Election? The idea is afloat, but I very much doubt if the Healy-Rae machine will have three wheels on its wagon and split its vote three ways. But then, you never know. The local elections are a kind of pre-leaving for the General Elections, which may well arrive in and around November or whenever the seats vacated by the new MEPs have to be filled. There is certainly a concerted effort to keep the Healy-Raes down: Despite
their huge vote in three separate areas, not one is to be allowed take the chair. Between them they got close to 9,000 votes – as much as whole parties got. It all seems a bit mean. We are talking about directly elected mayors in other parts. Surely, the mayorship should go to the person with the most number ones first, followed by the second and so on over the five year period? The local election throws up other interesting questions, particularly for
ment on Wednesday: ‘Kerry County Council is currently examining whether this development is fully compliant with the conditions of the planning permission as granted.’ As I am at the Mission Road, I don’t like the height of the new apartments alongside the Fassbenders, near the funeral home. Lower New Street is not just a one off, but is “the” architectural gem of Killarney, and the approach now both from the Fossa side and from the town centre is going to be ruined by this big overhanging block, me thinks. I cannot understand planning decisions - I simply can’t. This, along with the St Mary’s Church of Ireland and the old lanes, is the very essence of Killarney. But look at how most of the old lanes have been turned into tenement like areas – in the sense there is no public space other than the street and laneway itself. I meander a bit, but planning has to be watched. Is Mission Road the new scrap heap for public monuments? We now have the ploughing monument, the impressive Monsignor Flaherty statue, but with its rather strange and loud inscription; the mission wheel, and what next? If you go further along there is a wooden deer - as if we haven’t enough of the things already crossing from the demesne. We badly need an arts committee to oversee all the public monuments, including all these animals and birds in various threatening postures. Sinn Fein. It had more candidates in the field than ever, but managed to be down 700 votes to 9,292 first preferences this time. The retreat into just two electoral areas for SF from its important gain in 2014 in the south and west does not bode well for the General Election. The party failed to get a seat for the second time in Killarney, and it missed out too in Dingle and Castleisland. The vote was split in Tralee and the three candidate strategy there was not a success. But the greatest vote loss was in the south of the county where it must have a foothold if it wants to be sure of returning a TD next time in what is now a single constituency.
Who is accountable for scandals in the HSE? The Cervical Check scandal drags on and on and the more you check it, ironically the more unbalanced it is. But who is accountable for scandals in the HSE? I really do question how competent the HSE managers are. It goes back to the basic fact that a great many of the HSE personnel are politically appointed. Education and health are the two targets for political rewards in this country, and have long been. Shamelessly so. Labour in power stuffed the services with Labour/trade union acolytes ditto Fianna Fail. And while much of the focus is on the church running of schools, we have taken our eye off how education, particularly in the vocational sector and in the Institutes of Technology, has been stuffed with people of certain political leanings. The judiciary is full of political appointees. But, whatever about the law we can live without that – that both the health and the education industry are political footballs is a disaster for this country. Politicians announce free screening for whole sectors of the population, without bothering to check can it actually be provided, and can it be provided safely. Standards of education are at their lowest ever. We have let apprenticeship programmes or even basic training programmes slip almost entirely. Health and education, the areas’ most vital for human advancement should be taken out of politics entirely and rather than health and education ministries, there should be a rotating professional inspectorate for both, methinks.

Walk this way!
Local children plan charity walk
A fun family walk, organised by local children, will take place this coming Sunday in aid of the Jack & Jill Foundation. Pupils from fourth class in Gaelscoil Faithleann have organised the fundraising walk at Ross Castle, for the charity which is dedicated to providing home nursing to sick children. The walk, which is open to all who wish to attend, will leave Ross Castle at 12pm, and will follow the circular route towards town via the river walk and back to the carpark. Working in conjunction with the Parent’s
Council, a small group of the children formed a committee and worked on planning and promoting the walk. “The children have been so enthusiastic and dedicated to planning the walk,” Mary Carroll, Chairperson of the Parents Council, said. “It’s great to see children take the initiative and support a cause to help make a difference. The walk is a fun day out for families and we welcome everyone to come along. There will be refreshments, and we will have a lucky dip at the end with great prizes. All donations on the day will go directly to support the great work of the Jack & Jill Foundation.”

Kerry Friends of Motor Neurone plan flag day Kerry Friends of Motor Neurone (KFMN) will be holding their annual flag day next Friday, June 21. The group will be in Killarney town centre, Daly's SuperValu, Park Road and Tesco in Deerpark, as part of their annual flag day which is also the Global ALS/Motor Neurone Disease Day. Each year MND associations across the globe mark June 21, as a special day of recognition acknowledging the impact that Motor Neurone Disease has on people around the world, Christy Lehane, Chair of Kerry Friends of Motor Neurone, explained. “The International ALS Alliance encourages all ALS and MND associations around the world to undertake a range of activities to express their hope that this day will be another turning point in the search for cause, treatment and cure for ALS/MND,” he said. “Kerry Friends of Motor Neurone are
very grateful for the generous support given to our charity flag days over the years and would like to take this opportunity to thank all the loyal volunteers who come on board with us every year to fundraise for our charity. The main aim of KFMN is to fundraise and to create awareness of Motor Neurone Disease and to ensure that those people living with MND are at the heart of all our focus.” He added that they will continue to fundraise and hopefully one day find a cure. “It is sad that MND does not go away and fundraising does not get any easier, but Kerry Friends of Motor Neurone will continue to participate in fundraising in Killarney in the hope that in the not too distant future, medical science may find a cure for this awful disease.”

Sports writer to launch Kerry “football bible” One of Kerry’s best known sports writers is launching his brand new book – based on Kerry football - which could answer a lots of sports trivia questions on the bar stool.
NEW AMBULANCE: Kerry couple Mary and Tony Heffernan and their Saoirse Foundation have expanded the operations of BUMBLEance – the world’s first interactive children’s ambulance service – with the introduction of what is now its latest vehicle, a bespoke Mercedes-Benz Vito van. Photo: Colm Kerr, ARC studios.
Today (Friday), Sylvester Hennessy will launch ‘Kerry Abú: The Ultimate Kerry Football Handbook’, in the Kerry GAA Store in the Outlet Centre, at 5.30pm. The 287 page paperback, which he has been working on for almost two years, is sized to fit in any pocket and ideal for taking to matches, Sylvester explained to the Killarney Advertiser. “There’s about 134 years of sports history in the book,” Sylvester said. “It covers Club, County, Colleges, Ladies and all different aspects of football. Kerry have won 82 All-Irelands, Minor, Junior, Senior and U21. The nearest to us is Dublin with 50. It’s presented in a way that you can put it in your pocket and take it to a match. It’s like a little bible of sports.” Senior Kerry Football Manager Peter
Keane, who is a very close friends of Sylvester’s, has written the foreword. The book came about when Sylvester was approached by Noel O’Regan, grandson of ‘Bracker’ O’Regan, who works in Mercier Press. “He wanted someone to put together a supporters book and because of my work as a statistician I knew it was a book I could do well. It’ll settle a lot of debates or it could create debates amongst supporters.” He added that football in Kerry is a religion for most people. “The majority of people define themselves by football and peoples’ reactions to the book so far have been very positive.” The book is on sale in Easons and all good bookshops, priced at €10.
Children’s ambulance service ‘BUMBLEance’ expands fleet
BUMBLEance, the world’s first interactive children’s ambulance service has expanded its operations with the introduction of what is now its latest vehicle – a bespoke Mercedes-Benz Vito van. Built on an extra-long body, it becomes the ninth Mercedes-Benz BUMBLEance on the fleet and is finished outside and inside with the same cartoon ‘bumble bee’ imagery. To eliminate stress and create more relaxing surroundings for children, its interior décor and features include all the online and interactive elements it is possible to provide with; Wi-Fi, audio-visual and child-friendly gizmos that have made the BUMBLEance service so successful. Brainchild of Kerry couple Tony and Mary Heffernan and their Saoirse Foundation, the BUMBLEance service was established
in 2013 with the goal of creating an Ireland “where the fear and stress of an ambulance journey for a child no longer exists”. Since then, and with the support of Mercedes-Benz, the service has expanded considerably and today provides a range of supports for ill children. Commenting, Mercedes-Benz commercial vehicles sales manager, Fergus Conheady describes BUMBLEance as “one of the most worthwhile projects we have ever supported and one which we are proud to have been involved in since its inception”.

Vendricks is one of the town’s best places to eat
If you haven’t already paid a visit to one of Killarney’s best loved restaurants – then what are you waiting for – as Vendricks in Fairhill is fast becoming one of the town’s best places to eat. The stylish restaurant, which has the capacity to seat over 100 customers at a time, has quickly become known as one of the best restaurants in Killarney, serving affordable tapas, dinner and brunch/ lunch. Proprietors Angela O’Brien and Les Byrne have had rave reviews in the short time they’ve been open, with over 80 five-star reviews and 3,500 social media followers. Their ethos is to serve locally sourced, freshly prepared food, in modern surroundings combined with a friendly atmosphere. The name of the restaurant originates from The Franciscan Friary located just up the street, which has been a landmark in the town of Killarney since its construction in the early 1860s. The Belgian Franciscan Provincial that agreed to send some friars to Ireland was Fr Archangelus Vendricks, and they decided to name their restaurant after him. They opened on December 7, 2017 - the 150th anniversary of the opening of
the Friary in Killarney. In the last few months the team at Vendricks have been working hard putting together the very best kitchen team in the hospitality business. “We have an amazing kitchen team,” Manager Tara Buckley explained. “We mainly like to focus on tapas and we’ve a full à la carte menu. Our pastry chef, Eilish Clifford, is amazing. She is constantly coming up with new recipes and desserts. Also, our prices are on our website.” Tara added that the restaurant can cater for birthdays, small weddings, hen parties and all special occasions. “It’s reasonably priced with a large menu catering from light bites to a full three course menu. We also have an extensive wine list sourced from all over the world.” For more info contact Vendricks on 064 6636710 or info@vendricks.ie.
Local herbal blends hit Aldi shelves | By Michelle Crean A local business, which is helping to improve people’s health one cup at a time, has been chosen for the shelves of 137 Aldi Stores – including Killarney. The Busy Botanist, based in Killorglin, founded by two best friends, Jo Arbon and Clair Kelly, specialises in caffeine free herbal tea, has been chosen for the Grow with Aldi supplier development programme as Aldi Specialbuys for a number of weeks. Their innovative and healthy drinks are handmade and with a range of 14 different types – they target a wide range of health issues. And if popular enough they could see their range on the shelves of the food giant’s stores permanently. Developed in partnership with Bord Bia, Grow with Aldi has been designed to help small to medium Irish food and drink businesses secure a retail listing with a national retailer.
Applicants attended a special Aldi Immersion Day with Bord Bia to pitch their products and meet existing Aldi suppliers. Extensive product sampling followed, and after careful consideration judges selected the 68 exceptional products to take part in the Aldi Specialbuys event.
The idea for the business came about as herbalist Jo was running Holistic Hound, making herbal blends for dogs. However, after meeting Clair in a local slimming group, they came up with the idea of making herbal infusions which could help people with their health issues.
“The whole idea of the tea was to take away the tannins so you’re just getting the benefits of the herbs,” Jo told the Killarney Advertiser. “The idea was really to give people an easy way of accessing herbs.” Their range of teas, which include Sweet Dreams, Stressed Out, New Mammy, Pick Me Up amongst others, tells you the exact health benefits right on the front of the product. “When we started we asked the slimming group what were their main issues,” Clair said. “They came up with really common every issues. We said we’d start with a range of 10 targeting bloating and bone problems. Now we have 14.” t A LL NATURAL: The Busy Botanist range of infusions has won a place on the Grow with Aldi supplier development programme. Proud day for Killarney Celtic as they unveil Club Mark Killarney Celtic is the only club in Kerry - and one of 20 nationwide - to have achieved the exacting standards in administration and Governance required by the FAI to achieve the Club Mark. On Saturday, Killarney Celtic members past and present were joined by local dignitaries for the unveiling of the FAI Club Mark at Celtic Park. The club hopes that this will be the first part of a unique double as they have also been named as one of six clubs that are in the shortlist for the FAI Club of the Year. Club Chairman Paul Sherry welcomed Ireland South MEP Sean Kelly, newly
elected Mayor of Kerry Niall Kelleher, and Councillors Micheal Gleeson, Niall O’Callaghan and Donal Grady, and congratulated them on their re-elections. He thanked all the members of the Management Committee who put in months of hard work to ensure that the Club achieved the standards required. “Those involved in securing the Club Mark have put in a huge effort to secure this and should be very proud of their ef-
forts,” he said. “We can now proudly say to members and to parents of prospective players that Killarney Celtic operates to the highest possible standard off and on the field. We take great pride in this award and also thank the staff in the FAI for their guidance during the process.” Unveiling the Club Mark on behalf of the FAI was their Grass Roots Director Tom O’Shea who has been with the club since day one. He was joined by founding member and fellow Trustee Mikey Daly. Tom said it was a very proud day for the club and he was delighted to be in a posi-
tion to unveil the award. “Along with Mikey and Billy Healy, I have been involved with the club from the start,” Mikey said. “To see what has been achieved at Celtic Park is huge credit to all involved over the years. The present Management Committee has embraced the challenge of achieving the Club Mark and it shows that off the field they are one of the best run clubs in the country. Add to this the facilities and the success on the field and these are very good times for the club.” Tom also spoke of all the good work being done by many in the FAI. “While we all know the challenges the FAI is facing, it is wrong to malign all the staff who are doing some wonderful work. The huge range of vital programs are still running and the Club Mark is one of these. These programs support the work being done by thousands of grass roots volunteers.”
Beef farmers stage protest at Tesco Killarney | By Sean Moriarty Beef famers from the county staged a one-day protest outside Tesco Killarney on Saturday. The protest was organised by Beef Plan Movement who were highlighting to the public that the Irish beef farmer is not in receipt of a fair percentage of the retail share on all beef sold in Tesco. The Beef Movement Plan say it wants to educate shoppers going into stores that for every €10 they spend on beef, the farmer only sees €2 of that, for over two years' work, while retailers and processors take €8 for three days work. The chair of the Kerry branch of the Beef Plan Movement, Dermot O’Brien, runs a beef farm in Firies. “At the moment retailers have a very
strong position of determining how they control the price for farmers per kilo of beef,” he said. One of the main points of contention is that Tesco and other retailers use a Quality Pricing System to determine the cost price of beef. Criteria like the age of the cow or bull, the number of times it has been moved between farms and marts (four is maximum) and if the animal is a heifer or steer, all effect the wholesale price of beef. Retailers maintain that these checks are demanded by consumers but farmers argue that shoppers would not know that these checks were in place. Part of Saturday’s protest was to survey shoppers on their knowledge of the QPS system. O’Brien added that the farmers have 200 completed surveys that they will now study.
BEEF: Kerry beef farmers are not happy how the big supermarket chains can dictate the price of beef in the county. They staged a one-day protest last week.

SUCCESSOR CHANGES TO FAIR DEAL SCHEME APPROVED BY CABINET
A decision has been made to extend the three year cap under the Fair Deal Scheme to farms and businesses where the family successor continues to occupy the farm or business for a six year period. The Cabinet this week gave approval for a Bill to be implemented to bring these changes into law. The Bill is intended to change the treatment of family farms and businesses under the Nursing Homes Support Scheme also known as the Fair Deal Scheme.
Usually a participant under the Fair Deal Scheme contributes up to 80% of the income and up to 7.5% of the value assets they hold towards the cost of their care. The value of the persons home is only included in the financial assessment for the first three years of their time in care. This Bill will now place farms and businesses into the three year category. The Department of Health will now engage in pre-legislative scrutiny and engage with the office of the Attorney General in compar-
ing the legislation for publication. Full particulars however will be required to be assessed in respect of the regulations that will pertain to the new scheme. It appears to stipulate that the person requiring care of their partner or their nominated successor have to be regularly and consistently applied to the farming of the farm or operating business for at least three of the five years prior to the person receiving care. It also appears to require the successor to be, on a consistent and regular basis, applying a substantial part of his or her working day to farm the farm or operate in the business. Full particulars of the actual requirements will have to be assessed to evaluate the proposed amendments to the scheme. The above is a discussion pieceoland does not purport to be legal advice and should not be relied upon as such. “Perfect day” as Damien and Lena tie the knot
14.06.2019
WEDDING OF THE WEEK
26
Every Best Man that was ever appointed to wedding duties is warned not to lose the rings - but what happens when he goes missing? William Kelly was appointed to act as Best Man for his best friend Damien O’Donoghue and his bride Lena Stewart for their wedding at St Joseph’s Church in Rathmore on Saturday. But there was no sign of William at the appointed hour. In fairness - he had a pretty good excuse. His wife gave birth to a baby girl on the day of the wedding and he had to return to London on Friday night to be by her side. “She was not due until June 16 but once the waters broke on Friday he had no choice,” said Lena, who is originally from Liverpool but has been living in Kilcummin since she was seven years old. “He had flights booked every day just in case.” It was the only hiccup in what Lena described as her perfect day. Photos: Mícheál O'Sullivan Photography
Following the ceremony in Rathmore, the bridal party celebrated into the small hours at the Muckross Park Hotel. Lena’s Maid of Honour was her sister Stevie, while her bridesmaids where friends Morven Kemp from Glasgow and local girl Simone Leahy. Flowergirls were the happy couple’s two daughters, Isabelle and Robyn-Rose, and bridesmaid Simone’s daughter Emilie. Damien was spared an embarrassing speech by his Best Man as Eoin O’Keeffe from Lissivigeen was drafted in to replace the otherwise engaged William. Damien’s three brothers Alan, Kieran and Colm were Groomsmen. The couple paid particular tribute to their band, The Celts, and the DJ from AM Sounds who kept their guests dancing until the small hours.

Sunshine, smiles and ice cream at Valley 70 Cycle 220 cyclists took part in the 6th annual Valley 70 Cycle in Fossa last Sunday, all in aid of Coolick National School in Kilcummin. The morning was bright and sunny as cyclists from Kerry, Limerick, Cork and even County Carlow set off on the 70km route through the Gap of Dunloe which is consistently voted Ireland’s most scenic. This year, there were a host of younger faces and families doing the new 30km flat route. School Principal Irene O’Keeffe addressed the cyclists before roll off as she dedicated this year’s event to the late Carmella Sheehy who passed away in April: "Although Carmella is not with us today, she is with us in spirit. She radiated huge positivity in every aspect of her life". Weather for the most part held up, while Pat O’Leary, from Pat O’Leary Catering Equipment, was on hand to give out free
cones to the returning cyclists – who despite getting wet in the rain showers still tucked into his delicious ice cream! With a 40 strong volunteer team - visibility and safety in all aspects of the event was carefully managed while the catering team prepared a range of gluten free and vegetarian options in addition to the usual offerings. “Special thanks to all those who donated, supported, volunteered, cycled and to the many local cycling clubs that showed great support for this annual event,” Shane O’Callaghan, Cycle Committee Chair, said. “One hundred percent of the monies are used to resource Coolick National School in Kilcummin. The committee would also like to acknowledge the generosity of the many sponsors of the event – including lead sponsors Aherns Garage and Leane’s Kitchens and Bedrooms.”

GARDEN MAGIC
Gardening - By Debby Looney
Debby is available for advice and garden consultations, just call 086 6088156 or email barnhillky@gmail.com
Further weeding advice for gardeners Last week’s article about weeds seems to have caused more questions to be asked, rather than answer them. One question was, why is there no five litre Roundup for sale, and how dangerous is it? Five litre Roundup and Gallup are still for sale, but the customer needs to supply a herd number, or a certificate that they have done a course in safe spraying. Two litres and smaller are still available to the general public, as are ready to use products. I never feel comfortable telling people about the safety of using glyphosate, as I am of the firm belief that it is definitely not healthy. I see studies online ‘proving’ its carcinogenic properties, however it seems for every one of those, there is also a study ‘proving’ it is safe. I prefer to err on the side of caution, and not use it. There are alternatives, such as Maleic and Pelargonic acid, which are both organic acids found in chemical free weed-killers, such as Neudorff long-lasting fast-acting weed-killer. These acids work by deteriorating the cell structure of the plant leaves, causing them to dry out and die. Another question posed was, why did I write that wildflower seeds do not thrive? Think of a wildflower meadow…. are you imagining alpine meadows, or maybe poppies in France? Many of the boxes of wildflower seeds which are available have pictures of poppies, lupins, Catananche and cornflowers. Many of these plants need dry, warm summers, poor soil, and a slug free environment. This is because many of
these plants thrive in warm climates, where slugs are not an issue. They often self-seed, as they grow in gravelly soil which is well drained, rather than the heavy, wet soil conditions we have here. Growing wildflowers here can be achieved, but the secret is poor soil, and indigenous species… that is, weeds! If you wish to grow a wildflower meadow, it is advisable to take the top layer of soil off, if you have deep rich soil, as grass will otherwise take over. Drainage is also vital. An excellent website is irishwildflowers.ie. There is a vast amount of advice and information on it as well as an option for advice and a quotation based on your specific soil and requirements. A third question posed was, are hoes the only equipment available for weeding, and are they the best tool to use? There are many different types of specialised weeding tools, such as, a daisy grubber, a weed loop, or a weed spiral. A daisy grubber slips under the foliage and the plant can then be levered out – it is ideal for use with any rosette weeds, especially in a lawn. A weed loop is a u-shaped metal band attached to a handle, ideal for cutting weeds out of a border. There are several types of hoes, one of the best being an oscillating hoe which has a backwards and forwards motion as you use it, loosening the soil effectively. There are three edged hoes, Dutch hoes, swan necked hoes and many more – but the most important thing about any hoe, is that it is of good quality materials so that it lasts, and that the handle suits your posture – in order to prevent back ache and over reaching.

AHAR among listed tax defaulters in county Animal Heaven Animal Rescue is among 12 Kerry businesses and individuals who were named on Revenue’s latest tax defaulters’ list. The animal welfare, which has been shrouded in controversy, has been fined a total of €130,000 for the under-declaration of PAYE and other wage-related discrepancies. Earlier this year an investigation by Revenue raised “serious concerns” over
€150,000 that was paid out in cash by the animal welfare charity over two years, without any receipts or records. An audit by Revenue officials has found that AHAR owes over €130,000 in tax for the years 2015 and 2016. In March this year, AHAR’s operations and assets were taken over by the Athlone and West Midlands Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (Athlone SPCA).

A WEEKLY ROUND-UP OF NEWS • VIEWS FROM KERRY AND AROUND THE WORLD
INSPIRED BY DANNY CASEY
One for the road? Customers at a bar in Miami had more reason than most to celebrate as the United States Women’s Soccer Team went on a record scoring rampage against Thailand at the World Cup on Tuesday.
SETTING A WORLD RECORD: Tomorrow (Saturday) will see a black and white crowd descending on Tralee Town Park attempting to break the Guinness World Record of the largest gathering ever of people dressed as nuns.
Tralee Rowing Club having ‘nun’ of it Tralee Rowing Club is attempting a world record with a difference tomorrow (Saturday) in Tralee Town Park. In an effort to raise funds for the club, and for Pieta House, the club is inviting people to dress up as a nun with 25

percent of funds raised going to Pieta House and 75 percent to Tralee Rowing Club. “We were looking for fundraising ideas for the club,” PRO Barbra Damm told the Killarney Advertiser. “But this event is for the town too. It will be really good for Tralee to get into the Guinness Book
of Records. It has created a huge buzz and everyone seems to know about it. We need 1,500 nuns, which is very optimistic, but I am sure we will get there.” The current Guinness World Record stands at 1,436 people dressed as nuns in one place at a given time, a record that was originally set in Listowel back in 2012. The fun event is part of the annual Féile na mBláth Park Festival. Nuns’ costumes can be collected from The Grand Hotel on Denny St or in the marquee in the town park at 5.30pm ahead of the 6.30pm start.
The American Social Bar and Kitchen had used its social media page to offer customers a free shot every time the US scored at the game in Reims, France. They clearly did not expect the rampant Americans to run up a record World Cup tally in a 13-0 victory over Thailand. Yet manager Danny Rodriguez told Miami television station WPLG Local 10 that a good time had been had by all. “We had a turnout of about 40-50 people. There were good vibes, a lot of cheering, a lot of good camaraderie.”
CAPTAIN MORGAN: The USA women’s soccer team scored 13 goals against Thailand on Tuesday.
A US solution for a US problem President Trump might be the saviour of Mid-West based farmers after he announced that the sale of Ethanol-based fuel would be a year-round project and not restricted to summer months. This is a very US solution for a US problem. Restrictions were in place to appease the refinery owners, a major tax contributor to the US treasury. However, Trump’s trade war with China has hit farmers hard, especially those in the Mid-West states
like Ohio and Iowa, states that voted him into power. Increasing the sale season for E85 fuel, a gasoline-based fuel refined from 15 percent crops – hence its name, will, no doubt increase the value of corn-sheafs and help suffering farmers. It will hit the oil men though, and Trump hopes to offer some sort of rebate to the filling station owners, maybe in tax relief, to offset the farmers perks against the oil barons perceived losses. This was met a mixed reaction
from the farming community. “Mr President, you delivered on E15, but we have more work to do. The EPA’s oil refinery waivers threaten to undo your good works. I ask that you listen again because the pain that the ethanol and biodiesel industries have endured is holding back a farm economy that has further capacity to produce more clean air and clean liquid fuels for this country,” said Kevin Ross, a sixth-generation farmer and Vice President of the National Corn Growers Association.

Changing of An Post guard throughout the county There are changes afoot at many of the rural post offices around the county. Both Kenmare and Killorglin will see significant changes in the coming weeks as Government guidelines first mooted around 15 months ago to “save rural post offices’ start to come into effect. In Killorglin, Postmistress Nora O'Sullivan-Looney is retiring and the post office is moving from Mill Road to the EuroSpar complex in the town. It marks the end of 35 years’ as an An Post franchisee by Mrs O'Sullivan-Looney with 25 years as postmistress. “A post office should always be standalone and the hub of the community,” she told the Killarney Advertiser. “There is so much business we could be doing like motor tax and Government services. It brings people into towns and villages - similar to the way Passport Express is currently processed by post offices and
Originally from Skibbereen, and with a sporting background steeped in GAA, Mike was a late converter to rugby and played his first game for County Cavan RFC after graduating college and securing work in the Ulster province. Mike spent two seasons with County Cavan RFC before moving closer to home and joined with Tralee RFC in 1985. “My background was in GAA, but the camaraderie of rugby stood out to me and I really enjoyed my time playing all across the backline,” he said. “You played hard, you trained hard and you socialised afterwards with your teammates and your opponents.” Mike spent four years playing in Tralee before moving abroad for a while, returning to the Kerry club in 1992, not long before an injury ruled him out and a passion for coaching emerged. Mike was very much involved with the underage section before spending some time with the first 15 as a backs coach as well as the Women’s 15. During this time, Mike also occupied the position of fixtures secretary at the club and continued with both roles until taking over as Munster Junior Vice-President. Mike’s involvement with the Munster Branch and their committees started in 1997/98, representing Kerry clubs on the Munster Junior Committee before

joining the Rugby Committee as a Junior Club representative. “I spent a number of years as a Junior Club representative as well as holding the position of secretary for the Rugby Committee under Ger Malone and Bertie Smith for four years.” As the first President elected from a Kerry club, Mike has maintained strong ties with Tralee, a club that has developed the careers of Munster and Ireland Women’s captain Ciara Griffin, Munster player and Ireland Women’s International Siobhan Fleming, and Ireland International Ultan Dillane, among others. “Tralee is one of the four oldest clubs in the province and we’re one of the stronger Junior Clubs over the years, but like most rural clubs, has suffered from the woes of emigration.”
that kind of local spend will be lost, especially on Fridays.” In Kenmare the O’Sullivan family are moving the local post services too. Their Henry St premises has closed and they have taken up residence in the town’s Daybreak shop on Main St. The O’Sullivan’s, who are third generation postmasters in the town, promised “business as usual” in their new location. “I have seen a lot of changes over the years, no day was ever the same. I remember when we changed over to the Euro and a man came in with two biscuits tins full of money, the notes were wrapped as tight as cigarettes and I had to count all of that,” she recalled. “I really want to thank my customers for their loyalty and friendships over the years. Many people have been here crying when the heard I was retiring, and it is an honour and privilege to be thought of that highly
in the community.” Nora has spent 17 years at her current premises, prior to that she operated her post office on the Iveragh Road and another one in the town Square. Each move was into a bigger and better premises, something she wanted to do for her customers. “I was always a great believer in moving
to bigger and better premises and offering bigger and better services,” she added. “An Post’s present view is that relocating into places like shops will bring bigger footfall, but I beg to differ on this, and that is why I chose to retire early.” Nora’s final day as Killorglin’s Postmistress will be Friday, June 28.

Male grooming has taken off big time Skin care is essential and it’s not just for the ladies – in recent times male grooming has taken off big time. They are now actually doing more for themselves and as a result their skin and hair are improving so much. For men, I would recommend starting with the Sothys men’s deep cleansing facial. It’s a steam facial to help soften the skin, exfoliate the dead cells away and extract blackheads, with serums and moisturises applied after for anti-aging and deep hydration. Then four weeks later we would follow up with a glycolic peel facial which is a great way to renew the cells and clear up any stubborn blackheads, excess oil or even ultra-dry skin. So don’t delay, book your husband, brother, son, boyfriend etc., just in time for Father’s Day this Sunday. Hydration must be locked in so it’s recommended that you drink more water. Also, it’s im-
Mr Clein, said that Mr Jones’ affidavit states that he was unable to urgently supply two boxes of eggs to a local hotel as he had no access to his premises after hours as there were locks on the gateway into the shopping mall. Mr Jones added that his business must have access to take deliveries of fresh food, set up the premises for the day and perform orderly clean-up and closedown at the end of the business day. He said that on June 3 at 9.30am, his staff arrived at the shopping mall but that the mall was locked and they were unable to gain access. He added that he had a pallet of deliveries ready to bring to various businesses in Killarney town and was unable to do so because he could not access his premises. He said he was left with no option but to remove the lock on the gate ‘as a last resort’.

Tim Jones, who operates a butchers’ shop in the mall, brought an ex-parte application before Killarney Circuit Court last week, seeking the removal of the locks. Mr Jones and other tenants who lease units in the mall claim that the company has no right to restrict access to their units and that the restriction of access is a blatant breach of their entitlements under their lease. Judge Sean Ó Donnabháin ordered Annamaria and Tadgh Gallivan of XDev Real Estate Two Limited not to place locks on the mall after trading hours or provide keys. Barrister Peter Clein, instructed by solicitor Eimear Griffin, said locking the gate prevented Mr Jones and other traders having access to their premises outside ordinary opening hours.

Dromhall Hotel
A magical day awaits you in the heart of Killarney Can you think of a more perfect setting to hold your wedding celebrations than at a historic hotel set in the beautiful surroundings of Killarney? Dromhall Hotel was originally a hunting lodge, used in past times by the aristocracy visiting the famous Killarney lakes and mountains. Over 55 years ago, it was purchased by the Randles family and metamorphosed into the supremely elegant venue it is today. The Randles still
run Dromhall Hotel and thus you are sure of not only gracious surroundings and superb service, but also that personal touch which comes with family involvement. It has always been this Kerry family’s mission to give every single guest the individual attention that the hosts of a stately
home would, from fine dining and exquisite food, to a warm smiling welcome. The stunning Banqueting Suite and recently redecorated arrival reception area can cater for weddings of 80 to 320 guests, with a selection of options available for your special day, ranging from tailor-made occasions to reflect your individuality to all-inclusive packages which take all the worry and stress out of your planning. A fairy light backdrop and
mood lighting in the room are just two of the many generous items that are included in their wedding packages. Another complimentary offering is the wedding car, which will get you to the church on time and then off to your chosen photographic locations in the beautiful surrounds of Killarney’s iconic landscape, before whisking you back to the hotel. The hotel’s chauffeur, Larry, will ensure you get the royal Kingdom treatment and will put you completely at ease by providing a little picnic hamper for the newlyweds - who often forget to eat on their special day. They really do think of everything at the Dromhall! With over 50 years of experience, the Randles family know exactly how to make this most special of occasions perfect. And yes, they are fully registered to provide civil ceremonies also. Just talk to the experts at the Dromhall Hotel and see what this wonderful venue in the heart of Killarney has to offer. Bernadette Randles, the hotel’s Managing Director, along with the hotel’s Wedding Coordinator Ciara, are always available to chat about your very special day. Killarney visit sparks Bugatti fever The Bugatti Owner’s Club (BOC) chose Ireland as the location for its annual international meeting last week creating huge interest in the marque locally.
Killarney Classic car show to get bigger and better Killarney Valley Vintage and Classic Club's annual car show, which takes place at Killarney Racecourse on July 21, will expand its to include rally cars and motorcycles as well as vintage cars and tractors. It will be the fifth time that Killarney Classic Valley and Vintage will hold one of its flagship events. There will be over 150 beautiful vehicles on show so there’s sure to be something of interest to everyone in attendance. Organisers are in talks with racecourse management and hope to use the ambulance track on the course for a parade of participating cars and tractors. The event is being sponsored by Ahern’s Garage Castleisland and they will show their full Opel and BMW range. The motorcycle section will feature a
range of vintage motorcycles and it is hoped that some of the local motorcycle racers will display their racing bikes too. A display of locally owned rally cars organised by Killarney and District Motor Club members, Mike Buckley and Mark Falvey, will be another new addition to the show. “It is all about creating a family fun day,” Tom Leslie, Killarney Valley Vintage and Classic Club PRO, said. In addition to the classic cars, there will be a flea market, stalls and a children’s play area. There will also be food and refreshments available on the day and an ice cream van. Admission is €5 and the gates are opening at 11am. Individuals who would like to display vehicles at the show can contact Tom on 087 2383809.
Italian-born Ettore Bugatti founded the company that bears his name in 1909, in the Alsace region of what is now France, but which from 1871 to 1919 was part of Germany. The company was known both for the excellence of its engineering and for the artistic influence of its designs, which can be attributed to Ettore’s father, Carlo Bugatti, who was a famous Art Nouveau furniture and jewellery designer. Several versions of the Bugatti Brescia (pictured below) took part in last week’s run. The car was originally designed in 1914 and known as the Type 13. At the outbreak of World War One, Bugatti took two completed models to Italy and buried a further three near the factory,
which he recovered and rebuilt when hostilities had ceased. The Type 13 is credited with establishing the credibility of the marque on the world stage when four of the cars placed first, second, third and fourth, at the Brescia Grand Prix in 1921. Bugatti capitalised on the racing success of the Type 13 Brescia with a full-production Tourer version. “This is an extremely rare classic car and to see it in the flesh is a privilege,” Bob Montgomery, curator of the Royal Irish Automobile Club archive, said. “Beautifully designed, the Brescia is a must-see work of art. Bugatti as a brand, despite going out of business in the 1960s, was synonymous with excellent engineering and design. ” u See overleaf for full report on last week's International Bugatti Meeting Ireland 2019

Kerry visit for rare Bugatti cars worth more than €50m The Bugatti Owner’s Club (BOC) chose Ireland as the location for its annual international meeting this year, and almost 100 cars from all over the world spent the last week touring the Wild Atlantic Way. The cars, manufactured by the legendary French firm, were all manufactured before 1950, and according to Irish organisers the cheapest car was valued at just under €500,000. Each year the BOC organises an international meeting were club members spend a week on location, and the daytime road trips are followed by a packed evening social calendar. The club arrived in Killarney on Tuesday last and left on Monday this week after block booking the exclusive Dunloe Hotel & Gardens near Beaufort. A packed itinerary meant the visitors got a chance to drive some of the best driving roads in Kerry and Cork, including stints on Slea Head, Conor Pass, the Healy Pass and the Ring of Kerry. Members of Killarney and District Motor Club were on hand to marshal the route and to organise things on this side. BOC members Alex and Brenda Hobbs are no strangers to Killarney. They were members of the Oxford University Motor Club team of travelling doctors who used to supply medical cover for the Rally of the Lakes – a tradition that dates back to 1980. They approached Mike Marshall, the
first ever Rally of the Lakes Clerk of the Course, and he set about creating a route and organising local motoring based activities for the international crews. “This is a one off event for Killarney,” Mike told the Killarney Advertiser. “The club was in Switzerland last year and will be going to Belgium next year. This international meeting is pre-planned until 2025.” The 40 year friendship between the Killarney man and the UK-based doctors was a key part in Killarney securing this prestigious event. Mike visited an event at the Prescott Hillclimb venue, home of BOC, near Cheltenham about two years ago. “This was two years in the making,” added Mike. “I met Alex and Brenda on a visit to Prescott and it was suggested at that time to find roads in Ireland suitable for this event." Mike recruited several other Killarney and District Motor Club members and local classic car enthusiasts to help pull off an incredible week-long motoring extravaganza. They included Darren McCormick, Historic Rally Clerk of the Course, and clas-
sic motorsport competitor Mike Buckley, who went ahead of the convoy and erected directional arrows. KDMC Club Safety Officer, Pat Healy, followed the cars in a recovery unit while Sean Hurley (Glengarriff) and Paul O’Shea (Killarney) helped on a more localised basis. Local Bugatti enthusiast Mervyn Scott was also involved. “I met Mervyn by accident one day on a train to Dublin,” Mike said. “We started to talk about Bugattis and he said he just had to be involved.” Participants arrived from all over the world for the event, including two cars from Japan and one from French Polynesia. The majority came from France, Switzerland, Italy, Holland and USA. “They loved the mountain roads like the Healy Pass and the Conor Pass. And almost every day we met other clubs, like a Porsche club from Germany and an Austin Healy club from Britain, who were out following much the same route as us,” added Marshall. The last point is something Mike would like to explore further. “There is no end to the amount of car clubs out there, especially in England,” he said. “There are over 40 hotels in Killarney, one to suit very budget, and we have the best driving roads in Europe. We have the product: The Wild Atlantic Way.”

Five percent increase in passenger numbers 68,606 passengers travelled through Kerry Airport during the first three months of 2019 - marking a 4.8 percent increase on the same period for 2018.
Summer has officially started at Kayne’s Diners will be left spoilt for choice with a delectable variety of appetizing dishes to choose from, at Kayne’s Bar & Brasserie, with its summer menu launch. From Duo of Prawns, Super Food Salad, Cassolette of Glenbeigh Mussels and Tangy BBQ Chicken Wings to start. Mains include popular pizzas, the firm favourite K Burger, traditional Irish Stew and a variety of steak options. Back by very popular demand is the old Chicken Maryland recipe complete with the Panko Crumb, Banana and Pineapple fritter. Their extensive à la carte menu presents the best local produce. This
menu has something for everyone. “We know here at Kayne’s we have to cater for a wide range of diners, with local business people coming in for a working lunch, ladies who lunch looking for something light and tasty, guests coming in for a quick bite before hitting the shops or a gig at the INEC, to the guests looking to sit down and take their time over a three course meal with loved ones in our Brasserie,” Bernadette Randles from Kaynes said. “Enjoy a taste of summer with the new seasonal menu at Kayne’s – where you are always very welcome.” See www. kayneskillarney.com for more.
The most frequent services – Kerry to Dublin with Aer Lingus Regional and London Luton and London Stansted routes with Ryanair – carried nearly 54,000 passengers up to March 31. The top route for Kerry was London-Luton, while the most significant increase on a single route was evident on the twice-weekly Ryanair service between Kerry and Berlin which was up 17 percent from January to March. Outbound passengers accounted for most of the increase with 2,022 more people going through the Departures Hall and 1,446 more people arriving into the Kingdom in the first three months of the year. The CEO of Kerry Airport, John Mulhern, has welcomed the positive figures. “Tourists and business passengers have identified Kerry Airport as a convenient and efficient gateway with regular flights to two London destinations in Stansted and Luton as well Berlin and
Frankfurt Hahn in Germany with Ryanair. We’ve enjoyed a good start to the second quarter which saw the commencement of the Alicante and Faro sun routes and the increased frequency of the Frankfurt Hahn service for the summer season. Passengers are encouraged to choose Kerry as the most convenient starting point for a sun holiday or city break.” The twice daily Aer Lingus Regional route between Kerry and Dublin continues to grow with four percent more passengers availing of the service than during the first quarter of 2018. Seamless interlining of the Aer Lingus flights from USA to Kerry via Dublin has seen growth in the number of American tourists coming direct to the Kingdom. The recently refurbished Gateway Bar and Restaurant at Kerry Airport has made the overall customer experience for passengers more efficient, flavoursome and memorable. Further improvements in the airport operational facilities are planned for 2019 with a view to keeping Kerry Airport up to date in the world of passenger and aircraft safety and security.

Sopranos plan local concert this Sunday It’ll be music to the ears of the audience when a local vocalist teams up with one of Ireland's leading sopranos, Mary Hegarty, this Sunday night.
The late Mike (Tash) Griffin
Mike Griffin was a caring, gentle giant It was with great sadness news of the death of Mike (Tash) Griffin on May 24, just two weeks after the death of his brother Neilie. Mike, from Moulagh, Fossa, Killarney, died following a short illness. A gifted tradesman, Mike who could turn his hand to any task, many of the buildings in the Killarney region are a testament to his versatility. He became involved in the Ring of Kerry Charity Cycle through his friendship with Denis Geaney for nigh on 30 years. His job was driver of the video vehicle for the day on the Ring. His passengers over the years included Sean Hurley, Nicky Barry, Neilie O'Connor, Cathal Walshe, the late Weeshie Fogarty who conducted the interviews, and Mike Keane on the camera. The vehicle supplied by Padraig Treacy carried the personnel. All the above were in agreement that Mike's driving on the day was exemplary and courteous to oth-
er road users. He was well known for his singing voice with topical songs relevant to the scenic Ring of Kerry. Requiem Mass took place in the Prince of Peace Church, Fossa followed by burial afterwards in Aghadoe Cemetery. Mike was described as a caring gentle giant who loved life and lived it to full. He will be greatly missed by his family, children Geraldine, Mary, Michael and Jacqueline, sons-in-law Jason King, Michael O'Donoghue and Daniel Allen, daughterin-law Sarah, his 12 much loved grandchildren, brothers Denis, sisters Mary, Noreen and Joanne, brothers-in-law, sisters-in-law, nephews, nieces, relatives, neighbours and many friends including Denis Geaney and Cathal Walshe.

Laura O’Keeffe is planning the concert in The Brehon Hotel before heading off Cardiff after getting accepted into The Royal Welsh College of Music and Drama to do a Masters in Vocal Performance. Together they’ll be singing a variety of songs ranging from the most popular operatic arias to Irish and jazz ballads. “It's one of the most prestigious music conservatoires in the world and I'll be studying an MMus (Masters) in vocal performance,” Laura told the Killarney Advertiser. “I'm from Killarney myself and I really wanted to put this concert on before heading away for the next two years. We'll be singing some of the most popular and fun operatic arias, along with some jazz songs and Irish ballads. There'll
be something for everyone.” Laura has travelled to Como and Milan as a soprano soloist with the Fleischmann choir to perform 'Faure's Requiem' in October 2016, performed as a soloist with Killarney's own Gleneagle concert band, both locally and in Lisbon, as well as being flautist with them. She has also performed in the INEC many times and in past has played 'Maria' from 'West Side Story' in Killarney Musical Society's production of 'Musical Extravaganza'. Over past four years she’s been a regular soloist on the Cork music scene. She recently completed her BMus degree with a solo concert in the Curtis Auditorium, CIT Cork School of Music and has had many competition successes at Feis Maitiu, Cork and also at Féile an tSamhraidh. Laura is also a member of one of Ireland's leading chamber choirs, Madrigal 75, and has just returned from a tour with them in Edinburgh and Glasgow.

Starcamp has the X Factor! Starcamp Summer Camps have not only got magician Keith Barry as their 2019 ambassador - but they have also teamed up with Sean and Conor Price from the X Factor for the summer ahead. Favourites to win the 2017 X Factor, Wicklow brothers Sean and Conor Price will take time out of their busy summer touring schedule to pop in and surprise some lucky boys and girls. They will give them an insight into the music business, sing a couple of songs and tell them what Simon Cowell is really like! “We are so delighted to have teamed up with Starcamp!” the boys said. “They have everything we love, singing, dancing, acting, arts and crafts, camp games, magic and loads more. And they give out great freebies like wristbands, T-Shirts, certs. Starcamp is the best!” With their biggest and best line up to
date, Starcamp owner Aideen O’Grady, is thrilled with the overwhelming response yet again. “I simply want to give children an incredible, liberating and really positive week that can truly leave a mark on a child, due to our ethos of instilling self-esteem,” she said. Staff at Starcamp HQ work all year round to ensure the most wondrous experience possible for all who attend. A little insight into this years’ line up includes magic shows, a joke a day, Toy Story 4, The Lion King, Mary Poppins and David Walliams’ ‘Gangsta’ Granny’ for the older kids. There will be George Ezra sing-offs,
Disney classics and pop galore. The arts and crafts section will be imaginative and exciting, and kids love using the microphones for the news reporting and interview section. All leaders are Garda vetted, fully trained and have a minimum of two years’ experience working with children. Starcamp was a memorable winner on Dragon’s Den, has won numerous awards and is widely recognised for leading the way in what it does. With a number of camps already booked out, don’t delay in securing your place. Every child receives a Starcamp T-Shirt, art supplies, cert and lots more! The camp runs for five days from 9.30am to 2.30pm and children aged four to 12 will be sub-divided into their own age groups for advancing programs. Book your place at www. starcamp.ie or call 021-4377900.

In loving memory of Bridget O’Brien Harvey, Late of Lackabane, Fossa, Killarney, Co. Kerry, Who passed away on 13th June 2018.
1ST ANNIVERSARY
God looked around his garden And found an empty place He then looked down upon the earth And saw your tired face He put his arms around you And lifted you to rest. God’s garden must be beautiful, He always takes the best. He knew that you were suffering He knew you were in pain He knew that you would never Get well on earth again. He saw the road was getting rough And the hills were hard to climb. So he closed your weary eyelids And said, “Peace be thine”. It broke our hearts to lose you But you didn’t go alone. For part of us went with you The day God called you home. Loved and remembered and sadly missed by your loving daughter Jane and son in law Mark. You always had a smile to share, A laugh, a joke, a time to care, Each of us in our own way, Have special thoughts of you today. Miss you Nana. From your loving grandsons Sean and Mark. Nana Such wonderful memories of Nana, The Nana we all used to know, We kept you too long and there waiting, The angels have said you can go, Bright golden gates that are shining, Full of family to bid you hello, So blow us a kiss as you’re leaving, Our sadness we’ll try not to show, such wonderful memories of Nana, We all have our favorites you see, As you enter those gates you’ll be thinking, They’re all thinking of me. Loved and remembered and sadly missed by your grandaughter Bridget and husband Anthony.
BUCKLEY
She always leaned to watch for us, Anxious if we were late, In Winter by the window, In summer by the gate, And though we mocked her tenderly, Who had such foolish care, The long home would seem more safe, Because she waited there. Her thoughts were all so full of us, She never could forget, And so I think that where she is, She must be watching yet. Waiting til we come home to her, Anxious if we are late, Watching from Heaven’s window, Leaning from Heaven’s gate. Your loving daughter Noreen and Mike and grandsons Michael and Shane. We hold you close within our hearts, And there you shall remain, To walk with us throughout our lives, Until we meet again. So rest in peace dear Nana, And thanks for all you’ve done, We pray that God has given you, The crown you’ve truly won. Loved and remembered always Angela & Mick. We lost a Nana with a heart of gold, How much we miss her can never be told, She shared her troubles and helped us along, If we follow her footsteps we will never go wrong. We miss her from her fireside chair, Your loving smile and gentle air, Your vacant place no one can fill, We miss you Nana we always will. She was a Nana so very rare, Content in her home and always there, On earth she toiled in Heaven she rests, God bless you Nana you were one of the best. Loved and remembered and sadly missed your grandaughter Bridget & husband John & great grandsons baby John and baby Mike.
In loving memory of Bridget O’Brien Harvey, Late of Lackabane, Fossa, Killarney, Co. Kerry, Who passed away on 13th June 2018. You can only have one Nana, Patient, kind and true... No other friend in all the world Will be the same to you. When other friends forsake you To Nana you will turn... For her loving kindness She asks nothing in return. As I look upon her picture Sweet memories I recall.. Of a face of sunshine And a smile for one and all. Sweet Jesus, take this message, To my dear mother up above, Tell her how i miss her And give her all my love Loved and remembered and sadly missed from your loving son Thomas and daughter in law Ellen. I really miss you, Nana, And I wish that you were here, To hug me with your loving arms, And lend a kindly ear. Life goes on as always, But things seem out of place, Now that i can’t call on you, Or see your smiling face. Although it’s really painful, To think that you are gone, I know you’re in a better place, When all is said and done. I never will forget you, And we’ll never be apart, In all the special memories, I keep inside my heart. Loved and remembered and sadly missed from your loving grandsons, Martin and Tommy. Of all the special gifts in life, However great or small, To have you as our Nana, Was the greatest gift of all. May the winds of love blow softly, And whisper in you ear, “We love and miss you Nana and wish that you were here” Deep in our hearts, Your life is kept, To love and cherish, not forget, No more tomorrow’s we can share, But yesterday’s are always there. A silent thought, A secret tear, Keeps your memory, ever near, In our hearts forever.
O’BRIEN HARVEY
1ST ANNIVERSARY
O’BRIEN HARVEY
In loving memory of Bridget O’Brien Harvey, Late of Lackabane, Fossa, Killarney, Co. Kerry, Who passed away on 13th June 2018. If roses grow in heaven, Lord pick a bunch for me, Place them in my mother’s arms, And tell her they’re from me.
If I could have a single wish, I’d visit heaven up above, To see my special Nana, Whom with all my heart, I love.
Tell her I love her and miss her, And when she turns to smile, Place a kiss upon her cheek, And hold her a while.
You were always understanding, When I had lost my way, And your kindness and your wisdom, Are still with me everyday.
Because remembering her is easy, I do it everyday, But there’s an ache within my heart, That will never go away. Lovingly remembered by your son Richard, his wife Angelina and family xxx

The great divide
Killarney's fiercest football rivals get set to do it all again
Living in Killarney, there’s no escaping the Crokes/Legion divide. We use it as a means of identifying strangers. It affects our local politics. It even goes a long way towards deciding which of the town’s many public houses we tend to frequent. I, a Legion man, have been known to visit The Speakeasy, a Crokes bar, but that’s purely for reconnaissance purposes. And to drink pints. Talk of tourists and foreign sports is seasonal. Football banter is the one constant in this town. We gossip like teenage girls about injuries and tactics and how fellas are going in training. No man, woman or child can go unbranded and questionable allegiances must be debated at great lengths. If someone’s grandfather was originally Legion but his grandmother was Crokes and his father is Crokes but he played under 14 with Legion one year and he married a third cousin of one of the Lynes, but he didn’t play a whole pile of football really and they’re living above in Tiernaboul, what does that make him? Confused, probably. Even when we speak about the Kerry team, which we do quite a bit, some jibe about the amount of Crokes or Legion players on the panel is never more than a clever turn of phrase away. It’s all good craic and I think we should count ourselves fortunate to live in a parish with more than one club - not forgetting our fellow Killarney men and women above in Spa, who naturally can’t stand the sight of either of us. Sometimes I wonder what the town would be like on county final day if all of us were rowing in behind Killarney
GAA Club, instead of two-thirds of us wanting the other third to lose. There would be a serious buzz around the place in fairness. But the other side of that coin is that the local football rivalries in this part of the world are really special. And sure they’d have to split us up anyway because we’d be too good. Now some individuals get a bit carried away and there’s no denying the fact that Legion versus Crokes has been the source of plenty of ill-feeling and even genuine hatred down through the years. There are people in Killarney who are 100% blindly devoted to their club. Not once in their lives have they ever had a single ounce of empathy or sympathy for anyone wearing different colours; it’s ‘us versus them’ with no grey areas in between. There will be plenty of these supporters in attendance on Sunday and as long as their rage doesn’t give them heart failure, and they’re not too abusive, I suppose we just have to leave them at it. It all adds to the occasion. The odd dollop of hate here and there can make sporting events that small bit more intriguing. So what do the current crop of Legion and Crokes footballers make of it all? There is certainly some enmity between the two sets of players, there’s no denying that. Familiarity breeds contempt and these two teams are very familiar with each other by this stage. There are no quarters given
COUNTY LEAGUE: DIV 1
_______________________________________________________________________________
Dr Crokes v Killarney Legion Sunday at 3.30pm Lewis Road
SPORT
14.06.2019 whenever this fixture rolls around and whatever the outcome you can be fairly certain that there will be a bit of light “pushing and shoving” at some stage. Tensions are bound to boil over every now and then. Having said all that, there are 20+ games a year and these two teams generally only meet once or twice so it would be illogical for the players or managers to get too wrapped up in the rivalry, or to be focussing on this one opponent more than any other. You can only take things one game at a time. This amateur sport is approached in a very professional manner these days. Generally speaking, Crokes’ players no more concern themselves with what the Legion are doing than Legion’s players concern themselves with the Crokes.
SUNDAY
Now that the fixture is upon us, all eyes, including those of the players and management, are firmly fixed on Sunday’s County League encounter in Lewis Road. Crokes have had the upper hand in recent years, a period of domination accentuated by last season’s crushing 14-point victory over Legion in the quarter-final of the Kerry SFC. The most recent bout was far more evenly matched, however. Legion just failed to land the killer blow when they led in the Club Championship group game this past April as Crokes recovered to steal the spoils, but it
was certainly a more encouraging performance from Legion’s perspective. Crokes went on to make the final where they were defeated by Austin Stacks and their form in the County League has been largely indifferent since, although an absence of key players – many of whom have been rested after the team’s long run in the Munster and All-Ireland Club Championships - means that one should probably take their league results with a pinch of salt. So far in 2019, Legion have had some good days mixed with some not so good. They blitzed St Mary’s and Na Gaeil in the County League in recent weeks and victories over Rahilly’s and Rathmore in the month for clubs will certainly have pleased new bainisteoir Stephen Stack. Defeats to neighbours Crokes, Spa and most recently Kilcummin were tough to take, however, so they will be anxious to get one over on a close rival sooner rather than later. Sunday’s game provides the perfect opportunity to do just that but Crokes are always a very tough match-up. The Black and Amber have been understrength in recent weeks but you would imagine that Edmund O’Sullivan and co. will be fielding the strongest team at their disposal for the latest instalment of the Killarney Derby. It would be nice if we could all enjoy the day but unfortunately that luxury will only be afforded to the victors. Either way, I might avoid The Speak on Sunday. Just to be safe.

DIVISION 1 PREVIEW
Eight-way tie for second in Div 1 We are now midway through the County League campaign and things are looking extremely tight in Division 1 with no fewer than eight teams currently in a tie for second. An Ghaeltacht suffered their first defeat of the season last weekend when they were beaten by Dr Crokes in Gallarus but they still lead the way in first. Legion, who beat Na Gaeil by 21 on Sunday, currently occupy the second spot by virtue of their superior scoring difference but they are level on six points with Rathmore, Spa, Dr Crokes, Rahil-
ly’s, Stacks, Kilcummin and Dingle. The top two teams will qualify for the league final at the end of the year. At the foot of the table, St Mary’s appear to be in real trouble. The Cahersiveen club have no wins from their first five games with a scoring difference of -56. Also currently occupying the relegation places are Na Gaeil and Templenoe, two sides who seem to be struggling without their Kerry seniors in what is a very competitive division. If the first half is anything to go by, this competition could go right down to the wire.

| By Adam Moynihan
As we reach the midway point in this year’s County League and the various league tables finally begin to take shape, it’s time for teams to get their houses in order. With five rounds of fixtures scheduled for the next six weeks, a good run of summer form could turn you from no-hopers to promotion contenders, or relegation fodder to mid-table also-rans. That latter objective will be No. 1 on the agenda for Intermediate semi-finalists Glenflesk, who currently find themselves second from bottom in Division 2. St Agatha’s have endured a rough time of it in recent weeks and their record of one win and four defeats leaves plenty to be desired. With key forward Darragh Roche serving a controversial 12-week ban, scores have proven hard to come by and Glenflesk are the division’s second lowest scorers after Ardfert, who defeated them by five points last weekend. Up next for Paud O’Donoghue’s men is a home tie against sixth place Dromid and they will be anxious to get some points on the board. At the top end of Division 2, Dr Crokes’ second team are going well. They occupy fourth place after last Sunday’s comprehensive 13-point victory over Brosna and they could slip into the promotion places with victory over Annascaul this weekend. Glenbeigh-Glencar (nine points) and Kenmare (eight points) are currently in pole position to gain promotion to Ker-
ry’s top table. There appears to be no stopping Gneeveguilla in Division 3 as they made it five out of five with an impressive 3-7 to 1-9 victory over St Senan’s last weekend. The club from East Kerry will be hoping to maintain their perfect record when they play host to Milltown/Castlemaine on Sunday. Fourth place Listry and seventh place Firies are also in the hunt for promotion so a tense encounter is expected in Farranfore on Sunday afternoon, and Currow will also be hoping to make a move by defeating Listowel Emmets in Listowel. At the bottom, things are looking pretty bleak for Fossa at the moment but they’ll have a decent chance of picking up their first win of the campaign when they host the other winless club, Lispole, on Saturday. A resurgent Laune Rangers lead the way in Division 4 on the back of five consecutive wins and they can make it six at home to Duagh, who are currently a point back in second. Scartaglen and Beale are flying high in Division 5B and Dr Crokes C will be hoping to make up some ground on the leaders when they travel to Strand Road to play Kerins O’Rahilly’s B. In Division 5B, Legion B head north to face Moyvane.

Rally-supporting Garda retires from the force | By Sean Moriarty
Tributes have been paid to Garda Jim O’Brien following his retirement from the force over the weekend. The two motor clubs in the county have acknowledged the contribution Garda O’Brien has made to local motorsport, especially his efforts to eliminate the boy racer element from the annual Rally of the Lakes. One of Garda O’Brien’s biggest contributions to local motorsport was liaising between Killarney and District Motor Club and the gardaí in an effort to separate the unwelcome boy racer element from the rally followers. “I wanted to increase the public perception that this was a legitimate sport that was properly organised,” he told the
Garda James O’Brien, who retired this week, was instrumental in separating the unwanted boy racer element from the real rally followers during the annual Rally of the Lakes. Killarney Advertiser, “but also that there was an element who came to absorb the adrenaline over the weekend and had their own outlet that was not connected to the rally. I wanted the gardaí to see
from the inside out what was going on and that the public understood what was going on too. I was instrumental in protecting the good name of the event.” The Tralee-based Garda has been a
long-time member of Kerry Motor Club. His knowledge and experience in his day job were easily transferable to rallying and he made many safety recommendations that led to a safer sport for competitors, officials and spectators alike. The north Cork native started rallying in a Volkswagen Beetle in 1979, two years before he joined An Garda Síochána. He will move on to a new role working as a road traffic accident investigator for insurance companies, but he will remain involved in the sport. O’Brien acted as clerk of the course for local night navigation rallies when those events were popular in the county in the late 1980s and early 1990s. He was also a well-known event safety scrutineer and witnessed first-hand how car and crew safety improved as modern technology led to increasing speeds. “In the beginning, I was doing basic checks on brakes and helmets,” he said. “But the advancement in roll cage design and equipment like fire-suits and HANS devices that the crews now wear are the biggest changes I have seen.” As a member of Motorsport Ireland’s technical commission his work as a motorsport safety delegate took him all over the world, and he has officiated at World Rally Championship events. He also officiated as far afield as Rally Barbados. “As a member of the International Police Association I was able to take local police officers out to rallies and show them exactly what was happening,” he added. “In fairness to Motorsport Ireland, when they train their officials they do so to a very high standard. I will be staying with motorsport and will remain on the technical and rallies commissions.” He ran several co-driver courses over the years, passing on his own knowledge to newcomers, many of whom went on to forge very successful careers in their own right. Mike Dowling of Kerry Motor Club marked the occasion by presenting Jim with a gift on behalf of his own club and Killarney and District Motor Club at a special retirement function in Benner’s Hotel in Tralee on Friday night. It was the first time that both clubs in Kerry honoured the same individual at the one time – further evidence of the respect Garda O’Brien holds across county.

Killarney Camogie and South Kerry hurlers fly the flag at Féile The John West Féile na nGael Finals were held jointly in Kerry and Cork this year, with local clubs hosting clubs from all over the country. The games got underway on Friday evening in Spa GAA Club which was the perfect facility for the eight teams competing in the group stages in both hurling and camogie. Killarney Camogie Club, who hosted the Four Roads Club from Roscommon, played Castleblaney from County Monaghan in their opening game on Friday night. This match was a ding-dong, end to end affair and Killarney emerged victorious with a last minute goal. Match 2 on Friday saw Killarney face Tralee Parnell’s and they again acquitted themselves well in a fine win. Match 3 on Saturday morning saw Killarney play their visiting club, Four Roads. On the day Four Roads just about edged a good game but having won two of their three fixtures, Killarney progressed to the quarter-final stage. The girls headed across the county bounds to Ballyvourney where they were well looked after by the Laochra Óg club. On Saturday afternoon they played Clonakilty and after a titanic battle they snuck a great victory courtesy of another late goal, which was becoming something of a Killarney speciality. On Saturday evening, the team returned to Killarney to join the South Kerry hurling team, Four Roads Camogie Club, Firies GAA, Naomh Dominic and CLG Mícheál Breathnach for the parade through the
town at 7pm. This was followed by a reception in the Torc Hotel with supper, entertainment and music. The following day, Killarney travelled to Mayfield in Cork where they competed in the All-Ireland semi-final. On the day they met a strong Nemo Rangers side and although the girls were disapointed with the final result, it must be noted that they were competing in an All-Ireland semi-final for the very first time and acquitted themselves very well.
SOUTH KERRY
Meanwhile, the South Kerry U14 hurling team (sponsored by Forrest Safety Solutions Ltd) had also had a competitive weekend and enjoyed hosting CLG Mícheál Breathnach from Galway. South Kerry made a good start to the competition, defeating Naomh Dominic’s (Roscommon) in the first game on a scoreline of 3-11 to 2-3, despite a late surge in the last quarter. They then had a comfortable win in the next game against neighbours Firies GAA, winning by 8-6 to 0-1. Following these group games, players, mentors and family members from South Kerry and Mícheál Breathnach enjoyed a hot supper by Rustic Pantry in the clubhouse followed by introductions to their host families. On Saturday morning, South Kerry faced their visiting club at 10.45am. This was a

challenging game against a strong, coherent team. Despite thos hosts’ best efforts and a competitive second half where Jack Fogarty was denied two goals, they lost on a scoreline of 0-7 to 0-3. As a result of their performances, South Kerry qualified for the cup quarterfinal versus Luke O’Toole’s (Wickow) on Saturday afternoon in Donoughmore. The Kerry boys started the game slowly and found themselves 1-2 to no score down at the half-time whistle. A heated incident before the break saw a South Kerry defender receiving a questionable red card. The second half was a different story. The team was spurred on by the dismissal of their teammate and, overcoming the lack of official umpires and linesmen, a powerhouse performance led to a victory on a scoreline of 2-2 to 1-3. Both goals came from Matthew Fogarty with Shane Daly tagging on the points. This was the best team performance of the weekend and the team proceeded to Killavullen on Sunday afternoon for the semi-final. On Sunday afternoon, South Kerry faced Southern Gaels in the cup semi-final in Killavullen. The team had a great start with Shane Daly finding the net to put them a point up at half-time. Unfortunately, Southern Gaels put in a strong second half and brought South Kerry’s Féile campaign to an end at the semi-final stage for the second year in a row. Final score: 2-6 to 2-1. This was a brilliant occasion for the area’s young hurlers and a successful weekend hosting the John West Féile na nGael Fi-
nals. South Kerry’s visiting club defeated Southern Gaels in the final and all South Kerry players, who stayed to support them, invaded the pitch on the final whistle to congratulate them; a heart-warming spectacle to finish a great weekend. Killarney Camogie Club and South Kerry hurling were quick to thank all of their generous sponsors for making the weekend possible, and also all the families and friends for their support.

Letter I wish to congratulate the GAA and Organisers of Féile 2019 for hosting a wonderful and inclusive tournament. As a [arent of a participating player, I witnessed at first hand the enormous voluntary effort and work that goes into looking after our young sportspeople. It truly was a magnificent occasion, with hurling and camogie teams from all parts of the country competing, socialising and mingling together in a demonstration of the best that the GAA has to offer. In particular, I should like to thank the South Kerry Hurling Management and Killarney Camogie Management for looking after our children and Spa GAA Club for making their excellent facilities available throughout the weekend. Not to mention the Torc Hotel for their generous hospitality on Saturday evening. It was a truly memorable event, never to be forgotten by parents and participants alike. Yours sincerely, Pat F. O’Connor
