"We are at breaking point"
Not only did three Killarney businessmen got the country talking this week - but managed to get their new campaign trending at number one on Twitter for hours - as they urgently called for public support to be allowed to reopen as businesses "are on their knees". | By Michelle Crean 'The Plan', an idea by Paul Treyvaud who runs a restaurant on High St, was beamed across Facebook - which has since received 14k views - with the support of Niall 'Botty' O'Callaghan who runs The Fáilte Hotel and is a county councillor, and High St publican and John C O'Shea. During the live appearance, they called for the Government to listen to their appeal and the public to urgently get behind them and download a letter to give to all TDs in a bid to lobby Government to vote against the Proposed Extension of Part 3 of the Health (Preservation and

Protection and Other Emergency Measures in the Public Interest Act) 2020, which is due to take place prior to June 9. Hotels and bed and breakfasts can reopen services for guests on June 2. However, they say that other businesses such as restaurants, bars and cafes have been given no date as of yet - and the move is going to be "detrimental" in the long term.
They fear that ongoing closures will have catastrophic consequences not just for their own businesses but suppliers, staff and young people needing jobs - with many businesses folding as they won't make it to next season. In the letter they state that "With no start date for Restaurant/Bars & Cafes etc to reopen, yet an immanent an-
"People are going to be disappointed and angry" Cllr hits out at progress of Kilcummin Sewerage Scheme | By Michelle Crean Some people won't have an opportunity to join the proposed Kilcummin Sewerage Scheme after three important legs were withdrawn - a local councillor claimed this week. Cllr Marie Moloney said that she was left "dismayed and disappointed" following a virtual meeting with Irish Water on Wednesday saying that she was informed that Knockataggle, the Rathanane Roads and the GAA Club House, are not included in the new scheme, even though they were in the original proposals. The scheme, by Irish Water who are
working in partnership with Kerry County Council, will provide a new sewer collection system for Kilcummin village that will ensure wastewater from the village is treated appropriately. Over the coming months, Irish Water will progress land acquisition and procurement for the scheme. Works on the project are expected to commence late in 2022. The new sewerage infrastructure to be constructed as part of this scheme will include a sewer network for Kilcummin village, a pumping station, and approximately six kilometres of sewers, and will reduce the reliance on on-site systems such as septic tanks and package treatment plants. Once operational, the new
sewerage scheme will connect into the sewer network in Killarney town, where it will be collected and transferred to Killarney Wastewater Treatment Plant (WWTP) for appropriate treatment. "A public information night took place nearly two years ago outlining the areas where the sewer scheme was to be provided," Cllr Moloney said. "We were told they didn’t have enough applications to warrant the scheme being provided for some of the areas on the outskirts of the village. Yet at the information night they didn’t tell the people that they had to make prior application before the scheme was actually confirmed. I know a lot of people on these roads are going to
nouncement for Irish people to be able to travel abroad, the domestic tourist season will be decimated. Irish people will not book domestic holidays if they don’t know whether they can eat or drink indoors and will simply go abroad. We can not allow this to happen, especially when it can be easily prevented". They say that they too can reopen with reduced capacity indoors in a safe manner in line with current COVID guidelines. "All we're asking is to unite all hospitality," Paul told the Killarney Advertiser. "There isn't a person in the country who hasn't heard of 'The Plan' by now. We are urgently asking people to download the letter and give it to all their TDs and to put up a poster in their windows calling for all hospitality to open at the same time. Pressure politics is the only way it will work." Paul explained to viewers watching that everything they are doing is "within the law" and they're not calling for "social disobedience". "We are entitled to lobby our politicians," Niall 'Botty' O'Callaghan told the Killarney Advertiser. "At the moment hospitality is so divided, we're just asking for a united push." be disappointed and angry as they were intending to join the scheme when it was being installed. Now they won’t have an opportunity to do so." She said that they were also advised that it would cost in the region of €150,000 for every 100m which will push this scheme outside of the reach of a lot of people. "Along with that, we were told that the scheme would not proceed to construction until the end of 2022 after tendering and negotiations have taken place at a highly elevated price of over €9m. Unfortunately, it is hard to accept the word of Irish Water officials that this much needed scheme will proceed to construction on the dates they have given us as we have had so many dates previously and nothing happened. Irish Water is like the boy who cried wolf." Deputy Danny Healy-Rae added it "is extremely disappointing for the people who were led to believe that they could connect to the public scheme". "We will now have to redouble our efforts to ensure it is carried out to include the original design and nothing else is acceptable for the people of Kilcummin."

Public consultation to begin today on new route A period of public consultation on the development of improved transport linkages and a new route corridor to enhance connectivity between Farranfore and Killarney will begin today (Friday).
REFOREST KILLARNEY: Sir Maurice O’Connell pictured with one of the bottles with the ‘Killarney Plant a Tree’ tag on them.
Local company launches ‘Killarney Plant a Tree' initiative After the devastating fires in the Killarney National Park, Killarney-based Wayward Irish Spirits has pledged for every bottle of The Liberator Irish Whiskey sold in May and June it will donate to www.reforestationnation.ie to plant a tree in Killarney. A ‘Killarney Plant a Tree’ tag will be attached to the neck of each bottle highlighting the initiative and, hopefully, will encourage others to follow. “The whole country has been devastated by the scale of the damage from the fire that has destroyed so much of our unique protected habitats," founder Sir Maurice O’Connell said. "The Killarney National Park was designated as a UNESCO Biosphere Reserve in 1981 and the extent of the impact on the local ecosystem will take time to be fully understood. We’ve been planting trees here on the Lakeview Estate for generations but not in the numbers that are required to meet this challenge. This can only be achieved as part of a larger project. We wanted to get the ball rolling as soon as possible so we’re donating now to Reforestation Nation’s efforts to plant trees locally. We’ve donated in advance to cover 671 trees. We will also revisit our own planting plans in light of this recent disruption to the local wildlife. He added that they are privileged to be
based on the shores of Loch Leane, rich in its beauty and biodiversity. "We will be looking at further initiatives to do our part to reforest Killarney and help to rebuild the local ecosystem.” Wayward Irish Spirits has also released its latest Storehouse Special, a Cask Strength version of their popular blended Whiskey, The Liberator Small Batch – Double Port. “Our Storehouse Specials are small scale releases of interesting whiskeys from our Bonded Storehouse called ‘The House of Contentment’ or test releases of potential new products.” They are also delighted that The Liberator Irish Whiskey has been taken on by Musgrave’s Food Academy Programme which promotes local suppliers, leading to the opportunity to pitch to SuperValu stores in Kerry. "The programme offers mentoring and dedicated in-store displays. We are already stocked in SuperValu Killarney, Killorglin, Cahersiveen and Ballybunion, and hope that this coverage will increase shortly."

Kerry County Council is working in partnership with Transport Infrastructure Ireland (TII) and the Department of Transport to develop the N22 project and is inviting the public to engage in a process of consultation over the coming months. The aim of this period of consultation is to examine and identify improved transport linkages between Farranfore and Killarney including identifying the broad parameters of the area within which a new road-based link could be developed. As part of the process, a Southern Link Road between the N22 and the N71 Muckross Road in Killarney is also being developed and forms part of the public consultation. An online public consultation period will run for six weeks from today (May 14) to June 25. Members of the public and interested parties can view the shortlisted Route Corridor Options on the project website https://n22.kerrycoco.ie/ from today. Alternatively, submissions can also be sent in by Freepost or email to the addresses outlined on the website.
POTENTIAL
“This is a hugely important project for the entire county and has tremendous potential to enhance regional connectivity between Tralee and Killarney and the north and south of the county as well as improving safety for everyone," Cathaoirleach of Kerry County Council, Cllr Patrick Connor-Scarteen said. "I urge everyone to engage with the public consultation process and have your say.” Following the consultation on the Route Options Corridors, an Emerging Preferred Route Corridor for the scheme will be identified which will be displayed at a future public consultation. Once a likely route corridor emerges a Northern Link Road in Killarney town and an N23 Link at Farranfore will also be progressed. Kerry County Council has appointed Jacobs Engineering Ireland Ltd., as Technical Advisors to progress the planning and design phases for the scheme. During the consultation people can also book an appointment within the online virtual room and request a call back to speak with a member of the project team by phone or video call. An information leaflet and brochure have been produced to inform the public about the process and how they can engage with the project team.
"Positive step forward" for St Mary of the Angels The intervention of Robert Watt, Secretary General of the Department of Health, in the ongoing issues at St Mary of the Angels is a very welcome development, a Kerry County Councillor said this week. In a letter to the Chief Executive of the HSE, Mr Watt has advised that St John of God Community Services, who run St Mary of the Angels in Beaufort, is an important service provider for the State and has instructed them to develop a 'Sus-
tainability Impact Assessment' to ensure the service can be maintained there. "This is early days, but we finally have a positive step forward for the residents and their families and I would like to thank Minister Norma Foley for her intervention on behalf of the residents," Fianna Fáil Councillor Michael Cahill said. "It is imperative that no stone is left unturned in securing the long term future of St Mary of the Angels. We owe it to the residents, their families and the wonderful staff."

Killarney hotels dominate Tripadvisor Top 25 list | By Michelle Crean Four Killarney hotels proved that they are amongst the best in Ireland after being named in the top 25 Tripadvisor Travellers' Choice 'Best of the Best' this week.
NEW ROLE: Pat Gill, pictured with Sean Buckley (Managing Director), is taking up the role of General Manager with The Arbutus Hotel.
Arbutus welcomes Pat Gill as General Manager
There's a new face at The Arbutus Hotel in town as Pat Gill is taking up the role of General Manager. | By Michelle Crean The Buckley family this week said that they are delighted to welcome Pat on board as they prepare to reopen the hotel after months of closure due to the pandemic. Pat returns to Killarney after spending the last seven years in West Cork at the Westlodge Hotel Bantry. He has a wealth of experience in hospitality and he has lived in Killarney since the early '90s. Pat started his hotel career at the Three Lakes Hotel in 1980 and has been in love with the town ever since. Managing Director Seán Buckley brought Pat on board to relaunch The Arbutus after an extremely difficult
period to recreate the services offered to their loyal customers and hopefully attract many new ones by now offering new dining options such a full comprehensive bar menu, outdoor courtyard café, and when guidelines allow, an indoor dining option using the beautiful classic Arbutus Restaurant for Sunday lunch or evening dining for special occasions. "This is an exciting time for hospitality, and everyone at the Arbutus Hotel are so keen to open our doors again and welcome back our customers to our new range of services and help our customers try and return to the new normal," he said. "Pat Gill and the team at the Arbutus will be ready from June 7 to offer you a great big céad míle fáilte."
Ranked number one is the Killarney Park Hotel, followed closely by Old Weir Lodge at number six, the Killarney Royal at number 14 and the International Hotel which came in 19th place. Other Kerry hotels were listed including Manor West Hotel at number three, the Meadowlands Hotel at number nine, and the Ballygarry Hotel and Spa which placed number 11. It's a huge boost to the industry as all have had a difficult year due to COVID. "We are thrilled with this award, it is a huge testimony to the genuine warmth and hospitality our team deliver every day," Niamh O'Shea, General Manager of The Killarney Park Hotel told the Killarney Advertiser. "The family owned Killarney Park will be in business 30 years this coming April – our promise has always been warmth beyond the smile. Through our amazing
hard working team this warmth permeates throughout the hotel. Thank you to all our customers that chose us as their hotel of choice in Killarney and for taking the time to share their great experiences for others to follow. The number one position in Ireland is a great place to be today as we look forward to a fantastic summer season, but rest assured we will never rest on our laurels and will continue to deliver the warmest of welcomes and the best of service to our customers." Niall O'Donoghue from the Old Weir Lodge added that they too are proud to be number six on the list. "We're so proud to have been ranked at number six in Ireland ahead of such giants of the industry as Adare Manor and Hayfield Manor. We're delighted with this acknowledgement of our hard work which has continued behind closed doors since last October. We can't wait to reopen and welcome back guests that have been so loyal to us over the years. Equally, we're especially proud of our great staff and we're very excited to have them all back with us very shortly. The Trip Advisor Awards are the Oscars of the hospitality industry and it means a lot to us in a small family business."
€145,000 facelift for section of Lewis Road Lower Lewis Road is undergoing a facelift this week as part of a €145,000 upgrade. Since Wednesday the junction between St Anne’s Road and College Street was closed to traffic from 8am to 7pm daily, and works are set to continue again today (Friday). Following the resumption of many roadworks projects as part of the reopening of the economy and society, the works are being completed as part of the Killarney Municipal District Schedule of Works for
2020. Diversions will be in place daily and will be clearly signposted. The works involve planing out the existing surface of the road, excavation, and repair and resurfacing of the road. The public footpath remains open to pedestrians during the period of works which are being completed ahead of the busier summer season. Kerry County Council appreciates the co-operation of local residents and all road users while these important works are carried out.

Couple take on 100km goal for children's charity One local couple who set a fitness goal of running 100k this month are half way there and using the challenge to fundraise. | By Michelle Crean John and Maxine McGrath from Pinewood Estate made a New Year's goal to do something for charity this year and chose the LauraLynn Foundation, a children's hospice that provides specialist palliative and supportive care services for children with life limiting conditions, and their families. "We have two small kids ourselves and we would be heartbroken if anything happened to them so this is why we decided on a children's charity," John told the Killarney Advertiser. "We know there's plenty of good causes out there and we had seen plenty of
these fundraisers on Facebook so we decided we would do a joint effort." Although he doesn't like running all that much, John took on 100k for the month of May. Maxine has decided to jog, run, or walk it. "To date we've both got 50km done so we'll try and push on for the rest of the month. "It's a great and worthy cause and we hope to raise as much money as possible. We want to thank everyone for their support in these challenging times." To donate go to: 'Maxine and John's fundraiser for LauraLynn Ireland's Children's Hospice' on Facebook.

Over €11,000 raised in memory of Kay McCarthy | By Michelle Crean A fundraiser in memory of a much loved local woman has raised a massive €11,638 for the Irish Cancer Society thanks to the generosity of locals. Kay McCarthy sadly lost her battle with cancer four years ago and to mark what would have been her 60th birthday and anniversary, her daughter Jenny McCarthy and Jenny's sister-in-law Aoife Murphy set up a '3k for Kay' in April. Participants were asked to donate via Just Giving. And there was huge support, Jenny explained to the Killarney Advertiser. "We started the fundraiser off at work,
all the children and staff wore blue and our crèche, along with our sister crèche in Limerick, released a 6 and 0 balloon at 12pm in memory of mom, it was very emotional!" "Over the week and at the weekend the donations started flooding in along with people sending pictures of them doing the '3k for Kay' walk. Some crèches got involved by holding mini fundraising days too. Myself, Shane and dad were blown away with the love and support of everyone." She added that they had messages from friends and family sharing memories of Kay and how they were thinking of her. "It was lovely to know that so many were thinking of her over the week."
The hotel is part of The iNua Collection who are creating 350 new jobs in preparation for reopening their nine hotels next month with jobs being created in the reception, accommodation, kitchen, bar, restaurant, leisure centre and spa departments. Colgan’s Bar at Muckross Park Hotel will also have a brand new outdoor dining area for local guests to enjoy when visiting Muckross. The General Manager at Muckross Park Hotel & Spa, Frits Potgieter said they are pleased with how bookings are looking for the summer months. “We are so looking forward to reopening the hotel and welcoming guests back to Killarney for what I expect will be a very busy summer for the town,” Frits said. “We are excited to open our doors again and look forward to welcoming 40 new staff members as part of our team.” The Chief Executive of The iNua Collection, Sean O’Driscoll, said that bookings across the group’s nine hotels are looking strong for summer. “The entire team is delighted to be reopening after such a long closure period,”
he said. “The iNua Collection is happy to be back creating jobs again and we look forward to 350 new employees joining our existing 750 staff. Hospitality as an industry is great for developing the confidence and social skills of younger people when they start work, full of opportunities to move up the ladder quickly for those who are ambitious.” The iNua Collection operates a Learning and Development Academy and supports employees to achieve educational qualifications while working, he added. “Opportunities include our Trainee Manager Development Programme and our Chef Training Academy led by Group Executive Chef and Michelin-star chef, Stefan Matz."

Calls for extra Bank Holiday to aid tourism recovery | By Michelle Crean AWARD: Students from The Sem, Gearoid Mulvihill, Kacper Bogalecki (Film Director), Colm Looney, Jason Lee, Patrick Kearney, Jack Lynch, Dara O’Callaghan, Cian McMahon, Jack O’Sullivan, pictured with Sean Coffey (Principal), are delighted to win a film award this week.
Students thought provoking lockdown diary wins award
A thought-provoking nine minute long video made by local students to share their lockdown experience has won a Youth Film Festival award | By Michelle Crean Students from St Brendan's College learned of the news on Saturday last online that their entry won the First Cut! Youth Film Festival Best Schools Film Award. "We were delighted to hear this and we're very thankful to all those who helped us make this film a reality," Fifth Year student Kacper Bogalecki told the Killarney Advertiser. During last year's lockdown, the then group of TY students got together in hopes of making a thought-provoking film to answer the question, "Would it be ethical to return to how things were before COVID-19?". "We met twice a week on Zoom for many months where we shared our lockdown experiences and simply used this moment to have a little chat. We wanted to get something done towards the end of our TY programme, and perhaps undertake a meaningful project. I think during lockdown we all had a chance to reflect on our lives and become more aware of
what's going on around us." Cognisant of the major on-going world problems which were present before the pandemic struck, he said that they wanted to bring the viewers' attention to these issues and why fundamental change is needed. "With the help of Kerry Filmmaker in Residence, Mieke Vanmechelen, and our teacher Niamh Sheehy, we created the film titled, 'The Sem Film Project' highlighting the effects of climate change, war, and of course, the ongoing spread of COVID-19," he said. "Through our film, we also wanted to illustrate the value of solidarity and the importance of community spirit by documenting our daily lives whilst living in isolation. Moreover, we hoped that our film would serve as a diary of how, and what young people were doing at the beginning of the pandemic when we were all first thrust into the new normal in which we live today." The film can be watched on YouTube by searching 'The Sem Film Project'.
Repair works begin on one of Kerry's busiest roads Improvement works have commenced this week on the Board of Works road, Beaufort. The main access to Carrauntohill and the Gap of Dunloe, the road services ever increasing visitor and local traffic in and out of Killarney from Dromid, Waterville and Glencar, and has previously been described by Cllr Michael Cahill as being in a "shocking and dangerous condition”. “I have campaigned long and hard on behalf of the Beaufort community, arranging deputations, meetings with Irish Water and Kerry County Council, and
submitting numerous Notices of Motion in regard to the poor condition of this road,” he said. "I am delighted that the poorest and most dangerous section of what is the busiest county road in Kerry, will be resurfaced this week. All road users including the residents of Beaufort and in particular, along the Board of Works Road, have suffered for far too long. I am delighted to play my part in securing €114,395 in total for these works, €73,000 from Irish Water and a contribution of €41,395 from Kerry County Council."
A local tourism body is calling for an extra Bank Holiday this year to help the tourism industry to recover from the devastating impact of COVID-19. Kerry Tourism Industry Federation (KTIF) is supporting the call from Brendan Griffin TD and Junior Minister for Tourism for an extra Bank Holiday this September. As part of the Tourism Recovery Taskforce’s Tourism Recovery Plan 20202023, it was recommended to add an additional bank holiday to the year during the off-peak season. This would give the industry a well-needed boost following another detrimental year. As homegrown tourism continues to be vital to the Irish and the Kerry tourism sector the addition of an extra Bank Holiday in particular in September is vital to the industry not only for the current year but important for future years. With only one Bank Holiday between summer and Christmas, this will extend the domestic season for the country and the county of Kerry into September and has the power to increase the domestic season annually. “The industry continues to face challenges, with Government business and employment supports being fundamental

to the survival of tourism," Chairman of KTIF, Pat O’ Leary, said. "The addition of an extra Bank Holiday, in particular in September, will deliver that extra much-needed lift for the industry not only in Kerry but nationwide. Kerry continues to plan for events on the basis that health advice will allow them to take place and the addition of the extra bank holiday will support such events including the planned Listowel Races for September.”
New rangers for National Park Government confirmation that a number of capital projects are to be advanced to aid the recovery of Killarney National Park from the devastating wild fires has been warmly welcomed by Killarney Chamber.
Minister of State for Heritage, Malcolm Noonan, TD, has confirmed in Dáil Éireann that his department will work to enhance the activity programme in the park this year and that a “significant number” of capital projects will be progressed. Minister Noonan was responding to a parliamentary question from Kerry TD and Deputy Government Chief Whip, Brendan Griffin. Killarney Chamber said it was very encouraging also that Minister Noonan confirmed that many of the 60 new conservation rangers to be recruited will be deployed in the Killarney and the southern region. They will deal with a range of functions, including wildlife crime. Minister Noonan also praised the role played by the Killarney Meitheal group which he described as “a hugely valued volunteer corps”. Meitheal coordinator, retired park rang-
er Peter O’Toole, has confirmed that the group is ready and willing to resume its work on the eradication of the invasive rhododendron, in conjunction with the NPWS, once COVID-19 restrictions allow. Killarney Chamber President, Niall Kelleher, said it is very reassuring that the Minister and his officials hold Killarney National Park in such great esteem. “I thank Minister Noonan for his very proactive approach and I thank Deputy Brendan Griffin for ensuring the park remains well up there on the political agenda." Minister Noonan said staff of the NPWS are conducting work to assess the initial impacts of the fire and they are currently mapping the entire boundary of the blaze and using satellite data. Conservation rangers are now undertaking internal mapping of the area that was damaged and conducting preliminary assessments of the impacts and severity of the fire on various habitats and vegetation types. NPWS officials are also preparing specifications for a comprehensive, in-depth assessment of the long-term effects of the fire and where restoration efforts can be concentrated.

RUN: Killarney Sanctuary Runners are looking for participants this June. Members from l-r are: Mike Riordan, Martin Mukendi Fwaba, Molly Molefe, Frances Rowland and Fistou Kinzila.
Join the Killarney sanctuary runners for Cork City marathon A local running group hopes to be part of the most culturally diverse running team to ever have entered a marathon anywhere in the world - and they're looking for your help. | By Michelle Crean Killarney Sanctuary Runners are currently preparing for the upcoming Cork City Marathon and they are keen to get as many Killarney people involved as possible. The group is one of three in Kerry, including Tralee and Kenmare, which is gearing up for the challenge. The Sanctuary Runners, which is a non-political group, was established in
Cork in February 2018 by Glenbeigh-native Graham Clifford. The aim of this nationwide group is to bring together Irish residents, refugees and asylum seekers to run, jog or walk together. They encourage people to run alongside, and in solidarity with, asylum seekers and refugees in Direct Provision thereby fostering friendship, positivity and respect while bringing greater awareness to the migration system. This solidarity-through-sport movement
Legion prove that they are One Good Club! | By Michelle Crean Killarney Legion have successfully completed their 10 week One Good Club programme and in that time managed to carry out 30 activities not a bad feat during lockdown! It began on March 1 and the numerous activities were run in line with Jigsaw’s '5 a Day for Mental Health'; Connect, Be Active, Take Notice, Keep Learning and Give, to encourage and support the community to undertake a series of activities targeted towards promoting positive mental health and well-being. And as a way of saying thank you to everyone who took part, on May 27 at 8pm there will be a One Good Club ceremony held on the LGFA Facebook page. "The One Good Club initiative launched at a great time in hindsight as it helped boost the mood of the community when lockdown was tough and football was really missed,” Mairead O'Donoghue, Committee member, told the Killarney Advertiser.
GETTING INVOLVED
During the ‘Connect’ phase, the club held a family fun quiz, a jersey day which saw
club members from all across the globe take part and get connected, while Mairead ran a ‘Connecting With’ series where she interviewed a few familiar faces. The younger members of the club also created fantastic St Patrick’s Day cards which were sent to the local care homes. The ‘Be Active’ phase made everyone jump to their feet and get active, while ‘Take Notice” made them more aware of their surroundings through activities such as nature photography, litter picking, mindfulness and yoga. During the ‘Keep Learning’ phase the club held a 'Tell Me Something…” series where club members provided a piece of trivia, fun fact or a little anecdote about the club. The final stage of the initiative was 'Give’. Club members gave baked treats to the underage teams. Coaches carried out fun activities. The club also launched the 'Legion Boot Room' where people can recycle their old boots by giving them to other players in the club. The club also have an online fundraiser link for Jigsaw at www. idonate.ie/KillarneyLegionJIGSAW. "The club would like to say a massive thank you to everyone who took part in this initiative."
has won several national and international awards for their work in building communities focused on equality.
RESTARTING The Killarney Sanctuary Runners have been going for a number of years too but, like so many activities, were put on hold during the pandemic. With the easing of restrictions the group will be working towards restarting the Saturday morning Killarney House meeting of the group. In the meantime the Sanctuary Runners are hoping to have 1,500 runners partake in this year’s Cork City Marathon virtually on June 6, wherever they may be – 'Apart
but As One'. Killarney Sanctuary Runners member Mike Riordan is encouraging as many people as possible to get involved. “Killarney is such a multi-cultural, welcoming town, it’s the perfect place to build a great Sanctuary Runners group," he said. "We want as many people as possible to come out and walk, jog or run with us when we’re back this summer. Just now we’re asking people to sign up for the Cork City Marathon as a Sanctuary Runner, covering a leg of relay (8.5km) or more if they like. It will show we have great local support for what we’re doing." To find out more about being part of the Sanctuary Runners group for Cork City Marathon you can visit www.sanctuaryrunners.ie. Registration closes on May 27. You can also follow Kerry Sanctuary runners on Facebook and Twitter. They do not aim to be the fastest running team in the world……but definitely the friendliest!
"Cycle for us we need a bus" School appeals for funds | By Michelle Crean School tours and social outings could hopefully be in the pipeline for school students but first they need the public's help to buy them a wheelchair accessible bus. Named as beneficiaries of this year's Ring of Kerry '170k My Way', a virtual cycle instead of the usual physical cycle around the ring due to COVID, students and staff from St Francis Special School (SFSS) are appealing for funds to help their cause. And even better, this year's change to a virtual event means that all the students in the school and their families now have an opportunity to participate in this annual event, with cycling due to begin on 'World Bicycle Day' on Thursday, June 3. "The students, staff and all those who support SFSS are delighted to be taking part in the 170k My Way, which is a novel way to ensure that the Ring of Kerry takes place," principal Liam Twomey told the Killarney Advertiser. The cycle is open for the entire month of June. "All our students at SFSS are excited and ready for this challenge. We are so delighted that this year's event is

Leaving Cert students look forward to the future After a turbulent final year in secondary school for the current Leaving Certificate cohort, a number of Sixth Year students in Killarney Community College reflected on their experiences and outlined their hopes for the future. Aoife O'Brien hopes to study home economics and Irish teaching in Sligo next year. "I see the revised Leaving Cert as a good thing," she said. "It alleviates a lot of stress. The duration of the exams along with the layout are more student friendly." Reflecting on the obstacles encountered this year Aoife added that "it was difficult to motivate yourself at times with remote learning but I think it has taught me how to adapt to challenges". Daniel Cremin already has a carpentry apprenticeship in place for next year after a great experience doing subjects like metal and woodwork in the college. Regardless of his apprenticeship, he intends to sit all his exams. Daniel felt the last few weeks have been stressful with many class tests in preparation for the exam. "I feel we missed out on school outings such as field trips, college open days, but
saying that I think I'm ready for anything life throws me after the madness of this year!" Talented musician Sinead Gleeson felt she really missed singing and performing in the school choir at various occasions. Sinead has two offers of college places in the UK already for occupational therapy pending results, and is looking forward to a new challenge. "After this year, I have a greater appreciation of my family, friends and I don't think I'll ever take the small things I enjoy doing for granted. I see a bright future ahead of me and I'm excited to move on to the next chapter of my life - once I get over the Leaving Cert!" Alex Quinn sees his future in computer engineering technology and is hopeful of going to CIT to achieve this. He felt there was great uncertainty surrounding the Leaving Cert for far too long but is happy with the new arrangements. "It gives us every opportunity to achieve

what we want," he said. "I like that teachers have an input in our grades as they know us best and know the work we have put into the subject." Alex is hopeful that by the time he gets
to college there will be some form of normality. "We have missed out on so much, I hope that we get to experience college on campus as opposed to behind a computer screen at home."
Female Gaelic games players set for equal funding | By Adam Moynihan The Government has confirmed this week that female intercounty football and camogie players are set to receive the same funding as their male counterparts. Male players had been getting €1,200 per year from the State with female players receiving a third of that amount. Moving forward, both the men and the women will be given €1,200 per annum.
EQUALITY: Kerry footballer Aislinn Desmond says the increased funding for female players is a "massive step forward". Photo: Ray McManus/ Sportsfile.
Speaking on Today with Claire Byrne, Minister of State for Sport Jack Chambers said that he “cannot stand over or defend” the inequalities in funding. "We're in 2021 and this year we've seen the GPA and WGPA has merged, underpinned by the message of equality. I think that principle has to stand when it comes to the funding of our players. I propose €1,200 for both and I think that is the right thing to do. We've seen mas-
sive growth in ladies football and camogie in the last 20 years. "For all of our young women and girls playing Gaelic football, we need to make sure there is no artificial glass ceiling when it comes to sport.” When asked when these changes would come into effect, Minister Chambers replied “this year”. The news has been greeted warmly by the GPA as well as by players and officials across the country. Speaking to the Killarney Advertiser, Kerry football captain Aislinn Desmond described the announcement as “fantastic”. “It's a massive step forward for female intercounty players,” the Rathmore native said. “Personally, as a player, I think it’s fantastic that the Government are correcting the imbalances in funding for ladies football. The merger of the GWPA and GPA has been very successful in striving for investment and eliminating inequality for female athletes.
“For us it's not about the monetary reward. It’s just the basic compensation players require in order to perform at our best. With more funding this will help develop the players which will, in turn, raise the profile of ladies football.” The chairperson of Killarney Camogie Club, Paul O’Brien, also welcomed the ground-breaking new measures. “It is excellent news for all the women involved at intercounty level,” he said. “It takes the grant up to €1,200, which takes a lot more of the financial pressure off them while they pursue the sport that they love. When you look at the effort and commitment that the women put in on and off the pitch, there is no difference from the men and they should rightly receive the same benefits from the Government for it. Camogie needs this step to keep the sport progressing across the country. This may increase the availability of players across all counties.”

ANXIETY: Kerry Mental Health Association will host a Back to Work Webinar next week to help people suffering from anxiety.
Zoom back to the workplace with webinar advice
Kerry Mental Health Association and Tralee Chamber Alliance are to host a Back to Work Webinar next week to help address the worry and anxiety that may be experienced by employers and employees in Kerry who are returning to work after the pandemic.
The free Zoom event, at 10am on Wednesday May 19, will offer useful expert advice from Clinical Psychologist Dr Clare Kambamettu and Human Resources Consultant at HRBuddy.ie, Damien McCarthy. “We’ve reached a positive milestone on this long journey through the COVID-19 pandemic," General Manager of Kerry Mental Health Association, John Drummey, said. "More people are being vaccinated, restrictions are being lifted and the economy is reopening. It’s important, however, to consider the anxiety and worry that this phase of the 'Living with Covid Plan' might cause some employers and employees to feel at this time. They may well want to return to work, but doing so may feel daunting and present a challenge to their mental well-being. We hope this webinar will help them to cope as we move forward.” Dr Clare Kambamettu will focus on the psychological impact for employees and employers who will be going back into
the workplace after a prolonged period working from home or not working at all. Customers and clients are also reemerging from the lockdown and many will share the same anxieties. Killarney based Damien McCarthy, founder and CEO of HRBuddy.ie, will share advice that may ease workplace COVID-related concerns about vaccines, annual leave and the potential desire for some to continue working from home. This is a time of transition and Tralee Chamber Alliance and the entire network of Chambers in Kerry want to play their part in ensuring the transition is sensitive to the mental health needs of the returning workforce. The webinar, www.eventbrite.ie/e/backto-work-tickets-154395325575, will include a Q&A session, however should you wish to submit a confidential question in advance, which will be answered anonymously by the panel, please email: john@ kerrymentalhealth.ie.
An LCA 2 student in St Brigid's Presentation has been shortlisted as a nationalist finalist in the Sports Ireland Get Girls Active Hackathon. In early April, Sports Ireland asked teenage girls/sports development officers and any interested parties if they would like to be part of the solution to tackle female adolescent inactivity and sport dropout. They asked for project submissions that would encourage young females to remain/restart physical activity. Student Charlotte Doolan put together a four-page proposal called 'Ignite Girls Active Ireland' encouraging GAA clubs to establish a social sports club without the focus on competition to encourage young girls to stay active. She also encouraged the GAA to focus on handball as an activity to develop through the initiative. Last week Charlotte's idea was one of 20

part of the community by housing these life-saving devices. "The recent lighting up of the Heart Of Ireland phone boxes in Fossa, Woodlawn and Main Street further enhance these areas," Kevin O'Leary from KCRU said. Hundreds gather for Nathan's Walk Darkness Into Light Hundreds gathered safely in their own socially distanced bubbles in the early hours of Saturday morning for this year's Nathan's Walk Darkness Into Light event - sending a unified message of hope around the world to people who have been impacted by suicide and self-harm. | By Michelle Crean Every year for a decade the Killarney walk has seen a strong attendance - and even COVID didn't put a halt on this year's event which raises funds for Pieta House. Up until this year the local event has raised €500,000 for the mental health charity - and although participants registered online as being from Kerry, organisers Marie and Denis O'Carroll, who lost their son Nathan (14) in 2007, are hoping to find out how much was raised through this year's Killarney walk which will be added to this amount. Nationally, including Friday night's Late Late Show, it's expected that the total figure raised will reach €8m. "They're expecting it to reach €8m by the end of this week," Denis O'Carroll told the Killarney Advertiser. "I'd like to thank everyone who took part for their generosity and their support across the board including businesses
who helped out." Cathal Walshe PRO for the Killarney walk added that he too would like to thank everybody who turned out. "I'd like to thank everybody who turned out on such a wet and windy morning. There were hundreds present all in their social bubbles, and I'd like to compliment those who gave teas and coffees and donated to Pieta House." To warm everyone up Adrian and Silvia from Navé Coffee House opened their doors at 4.30am. People donated generously and Navé Coffee House raised €1,080 for Pieta House. Matthew Collins from The Sibly Food Company provided his delicious energy balls to keep everyone fuelled and Badger & Dodo generously provided coffee and hot chocolate. "It was fantastic to see a community come together, while staying apart, to support such an important cause. Well done to everyone involved," Adrian said.

GARDEN MAGIC
Gardening - By Debby Looney
Debby is available for advice and garden consultations, just call 086 6088156 or email barnhillky@gmail.com
How to achieve a perfect garden Something many gardeners aspire to is creating the perfect ‘Cottage Garden’. We’ve all seen them in magazines and gardening programmes, and when you close your eyes you can picture exactly what it should look like. But, how to achieve it? Cottage garden plants are primarily roses and perennials, along with clematis for height and sometimes some topiary or low hedging. As always, I am going to be boring and say that it is all about preparation – most perennial plants and roses need deep, rich, well-drained soil, a sunny aspect and shelter from wind. That is why the ideal picture usually features a walled garden or the backdrop of a cottage. Most of these plants also prefer a slightly alkaline soil. So, it is definitely worth considering where you wish to situate your plants and prepare the ground for them by adding drainage, sand and lime if necessary. To create a cottage type garden with an abundance of interest, it is important to take scale into account. The height of the tallest plant at the back should be equal to half the width of the bed. Plants should be grouped in threes for impact, and if you are short on space, try to repeat one variety three times at intervals instead. This makes for a coherent whole.
DECIDE ON A COLOUR PALETTE
I tend to think in pinks, pale blues and whites with a bit of yellow here and there, but equally warm reds, oranges, yellows with a bit of deep purple or bright pink
works. Roses are an integral part of the cottage garden, and with so many beauties to pick from I will devote next week to them. Perennial plants are the second large group of plants used in cottage gardens. Some which look well together in warm colours are Day lilies, rudbeckia, helianthemum and Asiatic lilies. Cooler colours which work well are delphiniums, aconitum, agapanthus, nerine and liatris. Dahlias come in so many shades and shapes they can be found to compliment any colour scheme, as can begonias. For taller plants at the back, try Giant Scabious with its pale yellow flowers reaching to two metres, the azure blue flowers of chicory, deep purple of verbena bonariensis, or bright magenta of Knautia. Again, gladioli are ideal for the back of any border, though the butterfly types will only grow to about 60cm. At the front go for lavender, catmint, or hardy geraniums. Greenery is of great importance among this abundance of flowers. I have several beautiful Mahonias ‘Soft Caress’ throughout my garden. They flower yellow in winter but have delicate feathery foliage all year round. Alchemilla mollis is another of my favourites, with its lime green foliage and flowers it provides an ideal foil. Grasses and ferns also provide interest. I cannot stress the importance of mixing some foliage plants in as it is these which allow the eye to observe the flowers!
Citizens Information share supports available for families The International Day of Families is annually held on May 15 and it promotes the importance of a healthy and well-balanced family. It is a day to celebrate your family and what they mean to you. The importance of this day and what it represents is a great opportunity to highlight some of the information, advice and support Citizens Information can provide to families. Some of the most common queries they are receiving from families right now are; Working Family Payment, formerly known as Family Income Supplement (FIS) is a weekly tax-free payment available to employees with children. It gives extra financial support to those on a low income. You must be an employee to qualify for it, however those self-employed aren’t eligible to qualify for the payment. You must also have at least one child under the age of 18 who lives with you or is financially supported by you or is aged 18-22 in full-time education. The Back to Work Family Dividend scheme aims to help families to move from social welfare into employment. It gives financial support principally to lone parents and long-term jobseeker families with children who find or return to work. If you qualify you will still get a reduced weekly social welfare payment for up to two years. If you qualify for either of the two payments above you may be entitled to the Back to School Clothing and Footwear Allowance, which is a scheme that helps you meet the cost of uniforms and footwear for children going to school. It is open from June 1 until September 30 each year. One-Parent Family Payment (OFP) is a payment for men and women under 66 who are bringing children up without the support of a partner. To get this payment you must have at least one relevant child below seven years of age, but there are exceptions to this. You must also meet other conditions and you must satisfy a means test. Job Seekers Transitional (JST) Payment is a special arrangement under the Jobseeker’s Allowance scheme
that aims to support lone parents into the workforce while they have young children. It is available to people who are not cohabiting and whose youngest child is aged between seven and 13 years inclusive. Many also enquire about leave options for parents which may be available from their employment such as Paternity Leave, Parental Leave, Parents leave and Adoptive Leave. Each of these types of leave may also carry a possible social welfare entitlement by way of a paid benefit if certain PRSI requirements are met. Another asset to families is the One-Parent Family Payment, a payment for men and women under the age of 66 who are raising children without the support of a partner. Another great resource to families is the Child Benefit, which is a monthly payment to the parents or guardians of children under 18, who are in full-time education or training. The payment is universal, which means that your income level and social insurance (PRSI) will not affect whether or not you’re entitled to it. “International Day of Families is a very important date in the calendar year, it is an occasion to celebrate the importance of families, people, societies and cultures around the world," Frances Clifford, Kerry Citizens Information Manager, said. "Our goal for this day is to let every family know that we are here to advise and support them. So regardless of your query, call your local centre and we will guide you in the right direction.” For anyone needing information, advice or who have an advocacy issue, they can call a member of the local Citizens Information team in Kerry on 0761 07 7860, they will be happy to assist and make an appointment if necessary. The offices are staffed from Monday to Friday from 10am to 4pm. Alternatively, you can email at tralee@ citinfo.ie or log on to www.citizensinformation.ie for further information and contact details.

Wall unveiled at Kerry Airport Ireland for Pieta House Kerry Airport Ireland and 26 other employers in the county have joined forces to donate €5,200 to Pieta House while promoting the county as a great place to work. The Open for Business Wall in the recently transformed Departures Lounge has been entirely sponsored by local companies who are encouraging people to choose Kerry as their work base. Kerry Airport CEO John Mulhern, Fred McDonogh, Managing Director of Red Chair Recruitment, Killarney and Chris Fitzgerald, Proprietor of Slógadh Signs, Killorglin have driven the campaign to raise awareness of the many job opportunities that exist in Kerry, despite the interruption of the pandemic. The launch wall coincides with last weekend's Darkness Into Light for Pieta House, Kerry Airport's charity partner since 2019. "Kerry businesses across all sectors have

Mr Mulhern thanked everyone who supported Pieta House this year: "It's been a difficult time for our own staff, their families and the hundreds of thousands of passengers who love to travel through Kerry Airport. Their well-being is important to us. Pieta House and the companies on our wall who made donations to the charity share our concerns for the increasing marginalisation of rural Ireland and the isolation many feel as population centres and opportunities for social interaction shift relentlessly into urban centres." Pieta House has a dedicated team working in Kerry to support people and communities in crisis by providing freely accessible, professional services to all who may be affected by suicide. The wall will be renewed in January 2022 and anyone interested in promoting their business to a local, national, and global market, while supporting Pieta House, is invited to contact Fred McDonogh at Red Chair Recruitment at Fred.McDonogh@ redchairrecruitment.ie.

Sunflower Day to spring into a virtual garden | By Michelle Crean It's normally an annual tradition to see the many wonderful volunteers on the streets in June but this year's Sunflower Day is instead going virtual. The annual national street collection will not take place this year due to the current COVID restrictions and will take place online on June 12. A big fundraiser for local charity the Kerry Hospice Foundation, there will be a virtual sunflower garden via iDonate.ie: SunflowersKerryHospice where people can make a donation. "It is one of our big fundraisers, which is part of a national campaign," Andrea O'Donoghue from Kerry Hospice said. "Two years ago we raised over €40,000,
all of which stayed here to support Kerry Palliative Care services. This year it will be slightly different. In an effort to keep the tradition alive we are going to have a virtual sunflower garden." The idea, she explained, is that they will add a sunflower on your behalf in memory of a loved one or just someone you are thinking of this time of year. "We will write your message on the back of the printed card and add them to the garden which will be on the grounds of the Inpatient Unit. We hope to have sunflower pins in selected shops around the county in the week leading up to the big day. Everyone who donates will be entered into a raffle to win a beautiful handmade faux floral sunflower wreath, which has been kindly sponsored by LittleLoveStems."

HEALTH & FITNESS CAO points rise but plenty Advice - By Brian Foley Brian is available for advice and fitness consultations, Call 087 403 0894 or email info@activate.ie • www.activate.ie
Fatherhood and fitness Last week I became a dad for the first time, it was one of the happiest days of my life and an experience I will never forget. Our baby decided to arrive a little early so whilst we wanted to ensure all the “t’s” were crossed and “i’s” dotted - our little man had different ideas. Most parents can empathise here; it’s not a perfect journey, the first weeks are tough, lack of sleep and confusion over “am I doing a good enough job here” appear daily, and I’m sure seasoned parents will tell me it doesn’t end. I thought about the nervousness of anyone entering a new chapter in their life. If you have been neglecting your health and fitness for too long now, it’s probably because you’ve been waiting for “that perfect opportunity”. • “I’ll wait until the kids go back to school” • “I’ll wait until Monday” • “I’ll wait until the New Year” You see the problem here is that this waiting for something to be perfect means you never get started. Perfect is the enemy of good, and perfect is the enemy of progress. If you haven’t exercised much before it might be a somewhat uncomfortable experience. You might even convince yourself after a week or two that it’s not perfect, and after a month, those perfect results you might have expected didn’t appear. Give it time, they will! 2020 taught us that we can’t predict
much. However, the healthier we are, the better prepared we can be for most things life can throw at us. To rid ourselves of "comorbidities" that can predispose us to disease or more severe symptoms of a disease, many of us now want to lose weight and address chronic health conditions. Those who are healthy want to stay that way. Others want to reduce anxiety through activity. The above issues don’t wait for a perfect day. The solutions aren’t one size fits all as everyone has their own unique circumstance. The solutions involve needing accountability and individualised options, not just access to equipment and a do-it-yourself fitness plan that’s unlikely to bring results. With all the stress in our lives, we need someone to tell us the best workouts for our goals, hold us accountable from day to day, and check in regularly to make sure that we are getting results. I’m here to tell you that your perfect time is today. Find a local coach to invest in and if you have found a good one, they will invest in you. I know that at Activate we have the solutions to help a wide range of people, and if we don’t, we’re never afraid to help point you towards someone who can. When you’re ready to ditch “waiting for that perfect day”, visit our website www. activate.ie and book your complimentary consultation and you’ll have taken the first step towards ditching perfect to be replaced with progress.

The news this week that a record 84,000 people have applied to CAO this year has caused extra worry among Leaving Cert students at a time that is already stressful. The rise in applicants is likely to put extra pressure on the points system but work is happening behind the scenes in Higher Education Institutes (HEI) and by the Department of Higher Education to provide more places to alleviate the pressure. three thousand extra places have already been allocated with the promise of more in the coming weeks. While you have no control over the points, you do have control over the practical steps you can take to make sure you give yourself every chance of moving on to the next exciting part of your career journey.
CHANGE OF MIND
Use the CAO Change of Mind facility up to the July 1 deadline to ensure that you have included up to 10 course options on both Level 8 and Level 7/6 lists. By filling up all 20 you give yourself a great chance to get offered a place. Points vary hugely between different colleges even for similar courses. Always check the entry requirements and module details of the course and the golden rule is to rank your courses in order of preference, not in the order of the points. A guide to the Change of Mind facility is available on www.cao.ie.
PLC
Apply for Post Leaving Cert (PLC) courses in Colleges of Further Education (FE). Entry to these Level 5/6 courses is not based on points and the selection of options available mean that there is something for everyone. As well as preparing you to go into the work place, these courses give you a great introduction to and foundation in a particular area and a QQI FET/FETAC qualification, which once completed allows you to apply for progression routes into HEIs through CAO. A quota of college places on many CAO courses each year are reserved for QQI FET applicants which students can apply for on a competitive basis and there are also extensive opportunities in colleges in the UK and Europe. Details of courses can be found on www.fetchcourses.ie and for information on progression routes see the QQI FET/FETAC section of www.cao.ie.

TRAINEESHIPS
Look at the options available in traineeships which are offered through FE Colleges and Education and Training Boards (ETBs) of which there are approximately 75 nationally. Traineeships include at least 30% work-based training in areas where there is an identified skills need. You will find the details on www.solas. ie/programmes/traineeship.
STUDY ABROAD
Take a look at study abroad options. A growing number of Irish students opt to study abroad each year with the UK and Europe being the most popular options. In many colleges in Europe, fees are cheaper and entry requirements are much more attainable than here in Ireland. While some deadlines have passed, there are a number of colleges overseas that are still accepting applications. Check out www.eunicas.ie and www.medicalpoland.ie for details. Students can apply for vacant college places in the UK through the UCAS Clearing system which opens on July 5 on www. ucas.com.

Inventors create revolutionary technology to fight COVID-19 Japanese 3D tech has reached another level - and the inventor is planning to give it away for free to help fight the Coronavirus pandemic. A Japanese doctor has created a 3D-printed ventilator which can be made anywhere, even in space, and it even has a touchless, germ-free 3D screen - and best of all, it can work without electricity. Dr Ishikita Naoyuki says it's revolutionary. "The roots of our project are in making the anaesthesia machine. But at this time, with this corona pandemic, we need a ventilator, so we just separated my system. A simple foot-pump and air compressor, or air and oxygen, is sufficient to
Trump CORNER
operate the ventilator," he said. Made from only four printed parts, the designs for them were transmitted to a 3D printer aboard the International Space Station. And Dr Ishikita now plans to offer the device free to the world. "This is the natural thing, to help people. So if I share the data, we can save lives."
TOUCHLESS SCREEN
Another invention, this time made in Hiroshima, is called the ASKA3D, a touchless screen with 3D images that float in the air, which users can manipulate with their fingers. It works by projecting a liquid crystal display, like a hologram, in mid-air, crucially
cutting out the need to touch and potentially transmit diseases between users. Creator Otsubo Makoto from Asukanet Co was inspired while on the bullet train Shinkansen. "During a business trip, I was looking through the window of the Shinkansen and I saw the world in 3D. I had the intuition that if I could stock the light information in that 10mm-thick window, it would actually be possible to materialise the aerial imaging. The potential is only limited by one's imagination." With no need to touch the screen, it will help prevent the transmission of COVID-19 or any other disease via touching surfaces.
The heat continues on Trump's tax returns He may no longer be president but the heat is still on as the Democrats continue to pursue getting a copy of Donald Trump's financial records. A powerful Democrat-led House committee, led by the chair Carolyn Maloney, say that Trump is no longer in office so he can not make a viable claim to withhold the information. They're hoping to obtain Trump’s tax
records and make them public. They're calling on a federal judge to order Trump to comply with a subpoena on the matter. Trump was once one of the world's richest men - he may still be - but with no public tax records it's still unknown. He has never filed for personal bankruptcy, but hotels and casino businesses of his have declared bankruptcy six times between 1991 and 2009. He has, in the past, released some finan-
Plans to erect a statue of a Púca in the town of Ennistymon, Co Clare have been shelved after locals voiced concerns about its supposedly “scary” appearance. The proposed 6ft-tall art piece was meant to be placed on a plinth at the end of Lower Church Hill as part of a tourism initiative but Clare County Council now say that the plans have been paused. The statue of the Púca, a mythical creature with a horse’s head, has been widely criticised since images of it were shared online. Local politicians have weighed in on what they describe as the “talk of the town”. Fine Gael Senator Martin Conway said he is one hundred percent against the statue as it is “ugly visually” and may cause offence, while Fianna Fáil TD Cathal Crowe described it as “hideous”. Speaking from the alter, the parish priest, Fr Cummins, said that he fully objects to the statue. “There is something sinister behind it,” he said. In Irish mythology, the Púca is a shapeshifting goblin who is said to take the form of various animals. According to legend, it can bring good luck or bad luck, but Fr Cummins and the people of Ennistymon are clearly taking no chances. cial information, but has declined to publicly release any of his full tax returns. “While the committee’s need for the subpoenaed information has not changed, one key fact has: plaintiff Donald J Trump is no longer the president,” Douglas Letter, the general counsel for congressional Democrats, wrote in a motion filed in the US district court for the District of Columbia last week. “Because he is no longer the incumbent, the constitutional separation-of-powers principles that were the foundation of the supreme court’s recent decision are significantly diminished,” Letter wrote.

Leitrim GAA to share anti-racism message on jerseys The Leitrim hurlers have confirmed that they will display an anti-racism message on their home shirts for the 2021 season. The hurlers have partnered with Migrant Rights Centre Ireland (MRCI) for a unique initiative that will see their green and gold jerseys complemented by the slogan ‘NO TO RACISM’, as well as the the MRCI logo. Counties traditionally offer up that space to sponsors in exchange for a financial contribution. “Racism is one of the worst things you can encounter,” said Leitrim hurler Zak Moradi, who was born in Iraq and moved to Ireland when he was 11. “It creates a huge divide between people and without its existence we would have a more peaceful, welcoming and
inclusive society. “We want to raise awareness and create a community that sticks together as a whole with no divides. We’re all human and we all deserve a sense of belonging regardless of race. We want the same team spirit of sports: all for one and one for all.” MRCI Director Edel McGinley added that, “sport plays a very important role in promoting diversity and inclusion”. “The Leitrim jersey sends a clear message, raises awareness and shows solidarity with everyone impacted by racism. We commend the leadership shown by the Leitrim hurling team, the GAA and Zak Moradi in taking this stand. We would like to thank The One Foundation for their support in making this initiative possible.”
Fota Wildlife Park has announced the return of its Eagle Athletic Club’s 5K Cheetah Run as a virtual race next month Taking place from June 7 to 13, one hundred percent of the race entry fee will be donated to Fota Wildlife Park which had to close its doors to the public for months at a time during the pandemic in 2020 and 2021. As a virtual race, entrants are free to pick a location and time of their choosing and upload their finishing time once complete. The traditional 5k run for adults costs €10 and the race also features a one-mile race for juveniles, entry €5, and a €20 family option is also available. Since its inception, the Eagle AC Cheetah Run in Fota Wildlife Park has been one of the most popular races in the Cork area and is a sell-out every year. Covering 5km, this is the only race of its kind in Europe, with participants running on the paths through the 100-acre park. Every year the funds raised from the Cheetah Run are used to support the Wildlife Park’s core objectives of research and conservation.
"We are hoping that our 2021 race will help raise some much-needed funds for Fota Wildlife Park," Eagle AC’s race director, Tracy Cotter said. "The park is a charitable status organisation that relies on gate receipts and membership fees for its income." To register go to register.enthuse.com/ ps/event/FotaVirtualCheetahRun.
Ballymurphy victims were ‘entirely innocent’
Northern Ireland’s longest running inquest finally concluded this week as a coroner confirmed that the 10 people who were killed in Ballymurphy 50 years ago were “entirely innocent” and had no ties to paramilitary activity.
For decades, relatives had insisted that the conduct of the British Army during the Ballymurphy Massacre was unjustified. Mrs Justice Siobhan Keegan confirmed that this was, in fact, the case, stating that the victims were “entirely innocent of any wrongdoing on the day
in question”. She found that nine out of 10 were shot by the British Army, and in the majority of cases the force used was disproportionate. Family members of the victims applauded Mrs Keegan as she announced her findings at the International Convention Centre in Belfast on Tuesday. The 10 who were killed were Noel Phillips, Francis Quinn, Fr Hugh Mullan, Joan Connolly, Joseph Murphy, Daniel Teggart, John Laverty, Joseph Corr, Edward Doherty and John James McKerr. An 11th victim, Pat McCarthy, died of a heart attack.
Extra supports for breastfeeding mothers Funding of €1.58m for 24 additional lactation consultants has been provided to the HSE to provide extra support to every maternity unit in the country. “This year, Healthy Ireland and Sláintecare are making a significant investment towards implementing the National Breastfeeding Action Plan," Minister
Donnelly said. "We all know how important it is that our children get the best possible start in life and this is something all Government partners have prioritised in the Programme for Government. Ireland has a culture of bottle feeding and in order to improve child and maternal health, as well as reducing childhood obesity we need to improve
our breastfeeding rates. This funding will provide for lactation consultants across hospital and community settings to ensure timely skilled assistance for mothers who wish to breastfeed. It will also support enhanced training, skills and knowledge to frontline staff.” As part of Sláintecare’s Healthy Living pillar, 'A Healthy Weight for Ireland:
Obesity Policy and Action Plan 20162025' is committed to implement 10 steps. These steps engage and co-ordinate multi-sectoral action to help reduce obesity and commit to investment in additional resources in acute and primary care settings together with enhanced training, provision of supports to mothers and social marketing.

Students reimagine new school building From a rooftop garden to mezzanine hallways, nature spaces and even a slide from one building to the other - St Brigid's students have the new school design nailed down! | By Michelle Crean The new proposed school building proved an inspiration for some students who got a chance to imagine what it could potentially look like. Working with Architect Anja Reinhold as part of the Irish Architecture Foundation’s (IAF) ‘Architects in Schools' initiative, Transition Year students were able to have a hands-on design approach. The group learnt how to research, design, plan, work as a team, finesse their organisational and time-management skills, as well as communicate their architectural ideas by drawing, model-making and re-imagining the spaces around them. The group said all skills they applied would be used cross-curricular. "The 19 students involved proved to be great experts in examining and providing feedback on possibilities for the future as they have the most experience and familiarity with it and its facilities," their teacher Ms. Quilter said. "Their insight into the pros and needs of the school were very thought provoking. As a facilitator for the workshop it was fabulous to see how imaginative, independent and the focused way the girls worked over these two and half days."

Creative Circle Kerry, supported by Dingle Creativity and Innovation Hub and RDI Hub, will host their first gathering today (Friday) at 11am. Expect to meet and chat with lots of creatives you never knew were in Kerry and reunite with old friends, enjoy some spoken word from poet and author Dairena Ní Chinnéide and hear about Elle Decoration Interior Designer of the Year and Kenmare native Bryan O'Sullivan's journey and lessons learnt. "I am a Kerry based filmmaker but finding people to work with across different disciplines locally wasn’t easy," filmmaker Christian Gyalus, said. "You either have an established network or work with the same people all the time. There was an opportunity to build a home for creatives, techies, makers and freelance folks in Kerry."

tive talent and with business networks, as well as showcase work. "Creative Circle is where you come to make new connections and find your next collaborator, share ideas and advice, get inspired and find out more about what's happening in the creative scene in Kerry,” Diana Griffin, Designer, added. Kerry has a vibrant, creative scene. For centuries, the world famous mountains, lakes, skies and seascapes in the county have inspired creative practitioners to live and work in a magnificent landscape steeped in culture and tradition and rooted in the Irish imagination. Whether you are from Kerry or new to the Kingdom, Creative Circle Kerry lets you plug into a ready made network of people you can create and work with. “Aside from being a celebration of creativity in the region and space to connect, we are establishing the Creative Circle Kerry in order to create business opportunities for creatives," Reidín O'Connor, Community Manager RDI Hub, said. "This will be achieved by building an immediately accessible directory of creatives to showcase their work.” To find out more go to creativecirclekerry.ie: Eventbrite

Coyne rides new Kawasaki for the first time Kevin Coyne has secured sponsorship from one of Ireland’s leading motorcycle parts supply firms, superbikes.ie for his planned assault on the Pirelli National Superstock Championship in Britain this year.
SPONSOR: Liam Si and Almas Monte, owners of Superbikes.ie, are Kevin Coyne’s new sponsors for the season.
The series runs alongside the British Superbike Championship. The Farranfore-based racer is stepping up the category after one season in the HEL British Junior Championship last season. He has acquired a Kawasaki Ninja 636 for the year ahead and with the opening round of the British Superbike (BSB) championship scheduled for Oulton Park in late June, he used last Saturday’s Irish season launch to get up to speed. The Mondello Park event was his first
time riding his new machine. He will also take part in the BSB’s official pre-season test on May 19. “Overall it was a great first test on the new bike. We have found a couple of suspension issues and gearing issues that we will have sorted for the next test in two weeks, and hopefully then can start to push a bit,” his father Mark said. “We are so delighted to have Liam and Almas from superbike.ie come on board. This is a new Irish business and it always makes it easier when sponsors love racing just as much as we do, and we really want to thank them.” Superbikes.ie was founded in 2020 and sells motorcycle race parts and accessories online, delivering across Ireland and the world. The firm is also an associate sponsor for the Dunlop Masters.

More upbeat earnings, market rotation, and tech woes Last year’s best stock performers continue to get hammered as the rotation out of tech stocks continues. Of course, investment folk always feel the need to wrap these declines into a digestible narrative, so the violent market moves are easier to comprehend. This time around, the majority of the blame has been attributed to a growing fear of higher inflation and rising interest rates. In reality, these growth tech names simply couldn’t maintain a perpetual state of hyper-growth. As I mentioned last week, a pullback was always on the horizon. Market participants continued to favour value and cyclical stocks despite a strong earnings season for many tech names. Inflation fears were dampened by a less than impressive jobs report, driving interest rates lower.
COMMODITIES
Supply bottlenecks and post-pandemic demand have sent commodity prices soaring to their highest levels in almost
a decade. Metals, food, and energy are at the fulcrum of any growing global economy. Throw some supply-side problems into the mix, and you have a perfect storm. Lumber has more than tripled in price since last year. Copper has jumped almost 40% since the start of the year and is now up over one hundred percent from its pandemic low point. While the supply-side contraction will likely be short-lived, this high demand, low supply environment looks set to keep commodity prices elevated over the near term.
CRYPTO
Ethereum (Ether), the world’s second-largest Crypto, moved above the $4,300 mark for the first time this week, doubling in price in just over a month. Ether continues to emerge from Bitcoin’s shadow as more and more investors look
to other cryptocurrencies for returns. Apparently, the relatively stable price of Bitcoin over the last week or so is too mundane for the get rich quick, volatility hungry crypto elite.
MARKET OUTLOOK
With commodities continuing to soar and Washington debating even more stimulus, inflation is still the market buzzword of choice. The Fed is insistent that the recent spike in commodity prices and wage pressure will be short-lived. They also have continued to highlight their willingness to let inflation run above target for a period as the economy revives. Despite the leading indicators signalling a pick-up in inflation, many market participants are now making a case for a more benign inflation outlook. Traders have trimmed bets on rate hikes, while Goldman and Pimco have both softened their inflation outlook. While fiscal stimulus, an even more

supportive Fed policy, supply-side contractions and pent-up demand will likely bring near term inflation. Secular trends such as technological innovation and demographics will ensure these inflation figures level out over the medium/long term. In short, inflation is likely to rise above the anemic levels it has been anchored to over the past decade, but this inflation jump won’t bring us back to the ‘out of control’ numbers experienced during the 1970s, despite what some doomsday economist would lead you to believe.
Insurance cover for shops and salons This week we look at what kind of insurance cover is needed for shops and salons. As our economy begins to reopen we welcome back retail shops and salons. Hopefully our progress continues and the hospitality and leisure sector can reopen shortly. Here I will outline the covers usually needed for the retail and beauty sectors. Material damage cover: For buildings, fixtures and fittings, stock, computers, and other assets that your business owns. Covers will include fire, flood, escape of water, theft, and storm among other perils. Cover extensions are available such as fire brigade charges, signage and goods in transit. Money cover: This is a standard section of all retail policies and up to the outbreak of COVID-19 many retail shops
were installing ATM machines on site to assist their cash carrying needs. It is likely we will see a culture change post-pandemic due to reduced cash usage but the extent of this change is not yet known. For now retail shop policies will cover the loss of cash and cheques. The amount of cash covered can be increased depending on safe and security details. Personal assault cover can be included when carrying cash to the bank. Employers, Public and Products liability: All retail shop insurances include liability cover. Employer’s liability is covered up to a maximum of €13 million and depending on the business description can be based on employee numbers and/or wages. Public liability
can be selected within a range of €1.3 million to €6.5 million and covers your legal liability in the event that you are negligent and required to pay compensation for bodily injuries or damage to third party property. Your trade and projected turnover will determine the rate charged. Products liability provides cover if someone is injured by a product that you have sold. Treatment risk: This cover is crucial for all beauty therapists, hairdressers, barbers and salons. It provides protection in the event that the business is negligent in providing a treatment that is specified under the policy. The limits of cover can be vastly different for treatment risk so it is vital to get expert advice. Business interruption: Covers consequential loss of gross profits following an insured event such as a fire. It is important to review your gross profits sum

insured on an annual basis. Other covers that can be added include seasonal increases in stock at specified times during the year, loss of licence cover, glass breakage, cyber insurance, personal accident and many more. Your policy should be tailored to your individual needs, so it pays to get expert advice from professionals who take the time to understand your business.

In person viewings are back on the agenda Monday may have been the day when thousands of people across the county flocked to their hairdresser or barber, or hit the road for that long-awaited visit to family or friends, but it also marked the day where potential property buyers could physically view a property before deciding to buy it. Since January viewings were conducted virtually and online with physical viewings only permitted in cases where a bid on a home was accepted. This week has been particularly busy with property viewings back in vogue with a flood of offers being received.
We have seen lots of people looking to view what properties we have available. The issue at present is stock levels are at an all-time low and demand is particularly high. For anyone considering selling their property, now is a particularly good time to go to the market. We have seen a significant jump in prices locally over the past six months and there is a strong appetite for property at present. The return of property viewings is very welcome as it allows the market to operate as it should. However, there are some positives to take from the lockdown experience. If
this last lockdown has shown us anything it highlights the resilience of the property market. Some of the changes we were forced to make as agents we intend to keep in place. Property video walkthroughs and virtual viewings are here to stay. Although current guidelines allow for property viewings from this week, buyers must still comply with public health guidelines by wearing face coverings and using hand sanitiser as provided. The doors to DNG Ted Healy finally open to the public again on Monday next, May 17. This is something we are really excited

No crowds but plenty of fun at the races The crowds may not have been there but that didn't stop the excitement at the three day Killarney race meeting earlier this week. | By Michelle Crean On Sunday and Monday punters enjoyed the National Hunt while on Tuesday it was a day for Flat racing. The star of the show was none other than Rachael Blackmore who made history in Cheltenham as she became the first woman to win the Champion Hurdle and also won the coveted Aintree Grand National. Another big name was 'Samcro' a multi Grand National winning horse who returned to his form in the Grade Three An Riocht Chase at Killarney. "Our National Hunt racing is probably the best calibre of racing in the whole year, we'd a couple of good winners," Philip O'Brien, Manager of Killarney Racecourse
told the Killarney Adverriser. "The star of the show was probably Rachel Blackmore who rode every day." Gerard Coghlan, Chairman of Killarney Racecourse, presented Rachael with a beautiful gift set from Rosemary O'Connor of Killarney Organic, for her recent outstanding achievements. Philip added a huge thank you has to go to the ground staff in preparing the course for the Race Meeting. "A big thank you to the ground staff who did a super job, the jockeys were delighted with the ground." A five day race meeting takes place in Killarney in July, followed by a three day meeting in August and two days in October.

NEWS BRIEFS... Road closure due to resurfacing works Access to the Old Kenmare Road (locally known as the Tanks Road) from the junction of the N71 to the upper car park at Torc, will be closed to all vehicular, cyclists and pedestrian access from Monday, May 17 to Monday July 12 inclusive. This closure, by the National Parks and Wildlife Service, is to facilitate the resurfacing of the existing roadway. Killarney National Park wishes to ask the public not to park at the junction of the Old Kenmare Road and the national route of the N71 as this will impede construction traffic entering and exiting the site. For those wishing to access the boardwalk on Torc Mountain they can do so by parking at the car parks at Springfield or at Torc Waterfall, and then use the existing trail network to access the Old Kenmare Road from there.

You’ll never be the sun turning in the sky And you won’t be the moon Above us on a moonlit night And you won’t be the stars in heaven Although they burn so bright But even on the deepest ocean You will be the light You may not always shine As you go barefoot over stone You might be so long together Or you might walk alone And you won’t find that love comes Easy, But that love is always right So even when the dark clouds gather You will be the light. And if you lose the part inside When loves turns round on you Leaving the past behind Is knowing you’ll do like you always do Holding you blind, keeping you true You’ll never be the sun turning in the sky And you won’t be the moon Above us on a moonlit night And you won’t be the stars in heaven Although they burn so bright But even on the deepest ocean You will be the light. Hungry Kerry have something to prove NATIONAL LEAGUE DIV1
_________________________________________________________________________
Kerry v Galway Saturday at 3pm Austin Stack Park Live on Eir Sport A new season always brings with it some degree of uncertainty. This is sport, after all. Anything is possible, especially before a ball has been kicked. But after several months of inactivity due to COVID-19, and a drawn-out winter during which players couldn’t so much as share each other’s company, let alone train, predicting what will happen in the opening weeks of the 2021 season is a tall order.
How have the players wintered? How prepared could they be after one month of collective training? Have any new guys had ample opportunity to catch Peter Keane’s eye? The forthcoming fixtures in what will be an abbreviated and unorthodox National League will tell, starting with Saturday’s match against Galway in Tralee. There are also plenty of unanswered questions that have nothing to do with COVID and everything to do with last year’s disappointing elimination at the hands of Cork. How will Kerry line out? Will Keane, now entering his third year at the helm, stick to the defensive structure that worked in the league but ultimate-
ly failed against their fiercest rivals? Has last November’s earth-shattering defeat rocked Kerry’s confidence, or has it shaken them back into life? Will the wise words of Pat Falvey, the accomplished explorer and life coach, help the players to reach the summit of their own personal mountains? And then there’s the opposition. The seven-in-a-row-chasing Dubs will come more sharply into view next week; first up is Pádraig Joyce’s Galway in Stack Park. The Tribesmen were impressive in last year’s league and were very unfortunate to lose to a Killian Spillane point at the same venue last February. They were less impressive post-lockdown, howev-

er, and how they’ll shape up on Saturday is anyone’s guess. Speaking earlier this week, Paul Murphy spoke of the team’s “savage hunger” since reconvening after the latest lockdown. “We absolutely have something to prove,” he added. “We’re rearing to get stuck in.” Unfortunately, Kerry fans won’t be there to offer their support but they will be watching keenly from their armchairs. They’ll want to see that hunger that Murphy spoke of, in addition to some vigour and some swagger. This is a huge season for the manager and his players. A good start could make all the difference.

Fans remain optimistic despite shock of 2020 It appears as though that crushing defeat to Cork hasn’t dented our confidence too much. In a poll carried out online by the Killarney Advertiser, 92% of Kerry fans said they expect The Kingdom to regain their Munster crown in 2021, with 61% of those polled tipping Peter Keane’s men to make it all the way to the All-Ireland final. However, with reigning champions Dublin expected to make it through the other side of the draw, the majority 1

It is now over 14 months since Kerry fans have seen their heroes in the flesh but as COVID-19 restrictions finally begin to ease across all sectors, there is renewed hope that this could be set to change. When asked about the topic in our poll, 61% of fans said they were hopeful that supporters would be allowed to attend fixtures before the intercounty season reaches its conclusion on August 29.

Keane's Kerry need to Ahead of Kerry’s long-awaited clash with Galway, Eamonn Fitzgerald suggests that a new tactical approach is needed We are not there yet, but we are well on the way to some kind of normality. There are still around 400 new cases daily, so even though the country opened up to a great degree this week, we all still need to abide by health guidelines. The vast majority of people answered the call from health authorities and the government to fight the good fight for freedom in 2021. No need to fight for the cause by military tactics in this instance as was the lot of our ancestors 100 years ago. That struggle for Irish freedom cost many lives particularly so during the Civil War, which lasted less than 11 months and was so bitter, especially in Kerry. It should never have happened, but it did ,often pitching brother against brother in too many cases. The GAA more than anything else proved to be the catalyst to heal the wounds in Kerry. Men who were politically opposed during the Troubles put it all aside for a few hours to play for Kerry in the name of the game. Just let us recall just two incidents where Kerry football saved lives and helped repair wounds. Joe Barrett, the best player Austin Stacks had in the 1920/30s, was due captaincy of the Kerry team in 1931. The Rock had won the 1930 Kerry SFC
and the system that still exists in Kerry is that the county champions provide the captain of the Kerry team the following year. The Stacks named Joe Barrett, the powerful full-back. Even though he was an ardent anti-Treaty man, he gave the honour of captaincy to Con Brosnan, a pro-Treaty activist and his bitter political opponent. It was a magnanimous gesture, and it caused ructions in the Stacks club, but Barrett stuck to his decision and Con Brosnan captained Kerry to win the 1931 All-Ireland, beating Kildare 1-11 to 0-8. Joe Barrett captained Kerry to All-Ireland success in 1932. He and Con Brosnan each won six All-Irelands. Last week I wrote of Killarney man Paul Russell, who was on those same teams, also winning six All-Irelands. That unlikely gesture by Barrett was beyond belief, as both their sides were the greatest of enemies. They cast aside their differences for a few hours to wear the Kerry geansaí.
JOHN JOE SHEEHY
For one Munster final John Joe Sheehy, a big man on the anti-Treaty side, had been on the run during the week. Yet when it came to Kerry football and the fierce drive to beat Cork in the Munster final every year, his political opponents
guaranteed him a safe passage. His playing gear was organised and as the two teams came out on the field and the customary kick about got underway, Sheehy came out of the crowd and jumped over the small fence surrounding the pitch. No one said anything. The ball was thrown in by the bishop among the four midfielders, as was the custom at the time. Sheehy took up his customary place at left corner-forward. Game on and all going full belt for the day’s cause, of beating Cork. No pulling back as players of opposing political persuasions gelled into a united Kerry team, passing the ball to Kerry teammates, some of them bitter political enemies. After the game Sheehy departed with a guaranteed safe passage, for so many hours. He won four All-Irelands and would have won more only for his political activism during the troubles of the 1920s. After that introduction, one may wonder what that has to do with Kerry opening their league campaign at Tralee tomorrow evening versus Galway.
FIRST OUTING?
This will be Kerry’s first outing after last year’s disastrous defeat to Cork. It has been a tough time for everyone. Kerry supporters were despondent, but the hurt was felt most of all by the players,

manager and selectors. They knew only too well that they underperformed and that is being gracious, a euphemism for a dreadful spirit-less display. Factor in the excuses: the dreadful weather, a Holy Mary, long, speculative kick into the Kerry square, Cork’s AFL player getting the vital touch ahead of two hesitant Kerry defenders, and the Tadhg Murphy/Seamus Darby-esque act of late grand larceny, put a poor Cork team into the semi-final. I wasn’t surprised that Tipperary won the Munster final, bringing great joy to Pat Moroney, the former Tipperary and Aherlow star player and a good friend of mine. Then Homer nodded as well. David Clifford, one of the best forwards in the country, was off his game, missing close-in frees that he normally could score even with his eyes shut. Same goes for Seán Ó’Shea. COVID meant the selectors have had a long period for ruminating on their performances on the day. The same goes for manager Peter Keane, but the pressure on him is much more intense. He has one of the toughest jobs of any manager in the country. The Kerry supporters are spoiled in many ways by Sam Maguire’s visits on so many occasions. They still top the role of honour with All-Ireland titles, but menacingly Dublin, the age-old rivals, are breathing down their necks and seem invincible.
DISAPPOINTED
What disappointed me most about the
67

o show fighting spirit loss to Cork was not so much that Kerry lost, but it was their lack of resolve to battle back when the going was tough. The pride in the Kerry geansaí was missing . Secondly, Peter Keane’s game plan and tactics left a lot to be desired. That is the key role of the manager, to decide on tactics, have a game plan and a Plan B to be used if the game is not going your way. The manager must be both a leader and a manager of players, willing and able to inspire the players at his disposal to play to the game plan he calls. So, we should be able to see the style of play Peter Keane has developed for this team. Allowing for all the considerations referred to above the game plan of the Cork debacle did not work. Analyse any game at club or county level and pinpoint the area from which most scores come. Precious few from outside the 50-metre line. Why make players such as Dara Moynihan and Micheál Burns, both well able to score, track back as defenders and never get the opportunities to score themselves or to assist with teammates in scoring? In the 2020 Kerry SFC, Tony Brosnan was the stand-out scoring forward and David Clifford is lethal with both legs anywhere near goal. What was the sense of them being out beyond the scoring zone, as happened so often in the Cork game? Even they won’t score from 60 metres. Getting the ball in fast and di-
rectly to this duo would have reaped better dividends. What’s more, even if the outside kickers are under pressure and may not be able to send in pinpoint passes, these two are well able to win their own ball, high or low. Get it in fast, especially on a wet day. Anything can happen with the wet ball deceiving despairing backs. Case in point: Cork’s last-minute goal. Get that sorted and cultivate the difference between being winners and being losers. The manager must instil this never-say-die attitude and even on days that the tide is against, you will be able to dig deep and fight back. Over the years Kerry have provided so many great players, some very skilful, others less-so, but what made the great ones great was this fighting spirit. Do it for the green and gold geansaí. Séamus Moynihan and brothers Marc and Darragh Ó Sé are three who spring to mind. That was a big fault up in Cork. Kerry allowed a poor enough Cork team to boss them, imposing their game on Kerry. I’m not suggesting that Kerry should use the módh díreach like Charlton’s plan of hoofing the ball directly out of defence. Put ‘em under pressure. Kerry need to put their opponents under pressure, in a more sophisticated version of what Charlton did with Ireland.
TEAM SELECTION
I have no idea what kind of a Kerry team will be selected for tomorrow’s game and I leave that to the selectors. In fact,
the personnel chosen is not a concern for me. There are enough of good Kerry players available who helped yield five All-Ireland minor titles in a row. Peter Keane played a great role in that domination. What I am concerned about are the tactics and the game plan, which will determine how Kerry play. The trainer’s role is to get the players fit. The manager has a different role. Peter Keane is on the third year of a three-year stint. It could so easily have been glorious. Kerry should have beaten Dublin in 2019. Had they won, God knows what might have happened in 2020 and the knockout series. 2021 is a big test for Kerry and for Peter Keane. I wish him, captain Paul Murphy and Kerry the best of luck and hope they start with a win against Galway tomorrow evening. If not, the slide could be very serious, facing Dublin in Thurles one week later and that will be a huge challenge. Then away to Roscommon, a must-win match and that game is away. Very challenging to avoid relegation. In that doomsday scenario the championship run versus Clare and then Tipperary would be no easy task before meeting Cork, who will come through the easy side. Pat Falvey joins the Kerry set-up and I hope that works out. The world-famous mountaineer has carved out a niche as a motivator for teams, in business as well as in sport. Let’s hope that he will fire up the spirits of these Kerry players, who
do not want to be defined by the 2020 display. Tralee optician. Roger Harty, a staunch supporter of Na Gaeil, has installed the most up to date diagnostic equipment in his business and has done a great service to the team providing the eye testing. One may ask, why do strapping young Kerry players need eye testing? So many people do not have uniformity of vision in both eyes and are totally unaware of it until they do a test. Peripheral vison may be weaker on one side posing problems in delivering accurate passes from that side and then some people are colour blind to some degree without being aware of it. Many of this Kerry team are students, or working from home, spending long hours facing computer screens without the protection of blue light glasses. One of the problems facing players returning to intense training is the big step-up from training alone to the intensity of group training and the real likelihood of injury, particularly hamstring. Cork have already lost three players to this scourge and a reliable source informed me that up to nine Kerry players have injured their hamstrings, some more serious than others. Niggling injuries is the stock answer of management to such queries by media. Let’s hope that that Kerry have learned from the mistakes in Cork and get off to a winning start in Tralee tomorrow evening. Good luck to all concerned.

OPINION WEEKLY SPORT
Our sports editor ADAM MOYNIHAN shares his thoughts on the week's burning issues
Fans need to hear the players speak The question asked of Kyle Sinckler was fairly standard. The Bristol prop had just picked up the Man of the Match award for his role in the Bears’ victory over Bath in the English Premiership and the interviewer summed up his performance and the result as a “pretty decent afternoon, right?” The England international laughed. But as he began to reply, his voice trembled. He struggled to find the right words. “It has been an emotional week,” he offered, before thanking his teammates and loved ones for their support. This was on Saturday last. Earlier in the week, Sinckler had been omitted from the Lions squad ahead of their upcoming tour of South Africa. When the interviewer asked how he felt about it, the 28-year-old became visibly upset. “I’m not gonna lie, I’m quite emotional right now. It has been tough. It means so much to me.” By this point the Englishman was fighting back the tears. Over the course of the next two minutes, he shared what he was experiencing and explained how he used the anger inside him to fuel his performance on the pitch. It was hard not to be moved by the frankness and sincerity of Sinckler’s words. Here stood a man who has given his life to his chosen sport (as all top sportspeople do), laying bare on live national television exactly how heartbreaking it is when you fail to achieve your goals. Even if you knew nothing of Sinckler before watching the clip, you felt like a friend of his after. The video prompted Kerry GAA legend Eoin ‘Bomber’ Liston to draw comparisons with the GAA. “Need to allow GAA players speak with honesty and intelligence when being interviewed #gamespromotion,” he tweeted. Paul Brennan of The Kerryman and Tim Moynihan of
Radio Kerry agreed and, responding to the latter, Liston added that: “Fans need to know more about their players to fully connect with their team”. As a journalist who has been covering the Kerry team for a couple of years, I’d have to agree with Bomber’s assessment. First of all, trying to get a Kerry player on the record during the season is not easy. In fairness, all the players I have approached in the past have been absolutely sound and very polite about it, and some have kindly agreed to take part in whatever it is I was doing, but it’s pretty obvious that they have been discouraged from engaging with the media. This approach seems to be deployed across the board as far as intercounty teams are concerned. In recent times, it has even been the case with certain club sides. And when players do engage, for example in pre-and-post-match press conferences or TV interviews, you rarely get the impression that they’re being 100% forthright with their views.
US VERSUS THEM
Why is this the case? Well, a lot of teams seem to adopt a “bunker” mentality (or, in some instances, have a “bunker” mentality imposed upon them). This “us versus them” mindset, aimed at cultivating team unity, is based upon the idea that no one outside the camp can be trusted. The media, understandably, are considered to be firmly outside the camp. Some managers also fear that their players will say the wrong thing, in turn drawing unwanted scrutiny on the individuals themselves as well as on the team. A stray comment can provide ammunition to the opposition and, in a game of inches, removing the possibility of that comment ever being uttered is seen as a desirable option. The impression I get, both from playing
in and working in GAA circles, is that some managers feel as though this approach to the media is ultra-professional. The irony, of course, is that the most professional teams and sporting organisations in the world fully embrace the media and encourage their athletes to engage with them openly and often.
NBA
If you take the NBA as an example, players never stop talking to the press. Journalists mingle with the athletes and coaches in the locker room and virtually no questions are off limits. And this is an environment in which the stakes are incredibly high. Say the wrong thing and players stand to lose literally millions of dollars in endorsements and cause huge reputational damage to their franchises, which are also multi-million-dollar operations. Yet the players are given free reign to say, more or less, whatever they like, to whomever they like, whenever they like. In fact, you’d probably get an interview with LeBron James the week before the NBA Finals far easier than you’d get an interview with David Clifford, or any Kerry player, the week before the All-Ireland. Clearly, as far as the likes of the LA Lakers are concerned, the positives outweigh the potential negatives. Allowing players to express themselves and share their personalities helps to promote the team’s brand, not to mention the sport itself. It also breeds an affinity between the fans and the players. After watching that two-minute video of Kyle Sinckler, many Kerry supporters will feel like they know him better than they know half the Kerry panel, even though the latter are their neighbours. I would wager that the majority of Kerry fans couldn’t tell you what the majority of Kerry players sound like, let alone what kind of personalities they have. There’s something
wrong about that. There should be more of a connection. It’s a shame because there are some good characters on this Kerry team, just as there are on every team. There are guys who are good craic. There are guys who are passionate. There are guys who are intelligent and articulate. There are plenty of very capable young men who have things to say, and who won’t fall to pieces when someone puts a microphone in front of their faces. And if some lads don’t want to do interviews, that’s completely fine too. It’s not for everyone. But some people thrive in the spotlight, and the fact that so many former Kerry players go on to become pundits shows that we are well capable of producing media-savvy footballers. Another upside is that being more open when it comes to media relations would almost certainly lead to more commercial opportunities for players. Brands like to align themselves with likeable characters, but it’s hard to decide who’s likeable when everyone is sticking to the party line and saying the same thing, or not speaking up in the first place.
ICONIC
We have seen what can happen when players and managers do express themselves. John Mullane’s “I love me county”. Kieran Donaghy’s “Well Joe Brolly, what do you think of that?” Ger Loughnane at half-time (half-time!) in the 1995 All-Ireland final declaring that “We’re going to do it”. These are iconic moments that still resonate with fans many years later. Real people with real emotions speaking from the heart. It adds so much to the spectacle. The very fact that it’s the Bomber, a hero from Kerry’s Golden Years, who is making this argument indicates what the attitude was like when he lined out in green and gold. If you watch or read interviews from the seventies and eighties, you will find plenty of strong words for opponents, for officials, even for those within the bunker itself. Isn’t that what sport and the GAA is all about? A game of opinions. To pretend that the players don’t have any is, when you think about it, fairly ridiculous. It might scare the managers but encouraging players to use their own unique voices has the potential to be a real game-changer.

Glenflesk GAA LOTTO: Glenflesk GAA lotto draw resumes on Monday, May 31. Further details next week. ONE MILLION STEPS: In memory of a mom in a million. We have set up a fundraiser in memory of our mother, Maureen Kelliher (nee O'Leary). As a lot of you might know, Maureen passed away in 2018 at the age of 47. This year we would have been celebrating her 50th birthday on May 28. Maureen was diagnosed with MS (Multiple Sclerosis) in 2016. All those who were with her through that tough
journey knew of the strength and determination she had shown while living with such a life altering condition, which heavily affected her mobility and stamina. We have decided instead to take on a challenge to reach a goal of one million steps between the four of us from the 1st to the 28th of May. We chose to do this because prior to her illness, she loved being active and was on her feet every day whether it was in Glenflesk, Killarney Celtic, or Kenmare. During this challenge, we will provide regular updates on our social media accounts (Facebook, Instagram, etc.). The money raised will be donated to MS Ireland, a charity that we hold close to our hearts. We appreciate any donation, big or small, as a way of celebrating her birthday and raising money for a good cause. Thank you - Roy, Aideen, Susan, and Marc.
