Teens Terrorise Town Centre Residents

Locals in the Mangerton View, O’Connell’s Terrace and Sunnyhill area of town say they are being tormented by a group of unruly teenagers who have been congregating at the nearby Hilliard House car park. Speaking to the Killarney Advertiser, a concerned resident said a group of six to eight young people had been loitering at the car park for months and locals have been subjected loud noise, littering, trespassing and even criminal damage. One woman has returned home to find youths stranded on her roof on two separate occasions and another resident, who has a young child, had a stone thrown through their window from the top of the car park. The youths have also been caught flinging rubbish into nearby gardens. “It’s just pure devilment,” our source said. “I’ve been sitting at home and I’ve seen bottles thrown in over my wall. They’re screaming and roaring, leaving rubbish, and drinking all hours of the night. We had a nice a summer but if I sit out the back, there are comments coming down from the top of the car park. There’s a running commentary from them. “But it’s more the dumping, the climbing on the roof and the noise levels. The noise up there is unreal. There’s hardly an evening goes by when there aren’t a few of them up there.” Two locals, both of whom work in the vicinity, had to stop parking in the area because of the constant stream of intimidating comments being sent in their direction. Previously the shutters of the car park came down at 8pm but that was subsequently changed to 11pm. Now, the facility is open 24 hours a day. Spikes have been installed at one of the more popular loitering sites to try and deter the youths from sitting there but our source feels more needs to be done. “We’ve notified the gardaí but in fairness to them, they can’t be there 24/7,” she said. “Maybe cameras or a security guard who can drive up there every now and then would make a difference.”

Griffin Confident South Kerry Greenway Will Go Ahead

Tourism Minister Brendan Griffin says he is confident that the proposed south Kerry greenway will come to fruition. The Department of Transport, Tourism and Sport is currently rolling out funding for greenways and the Kerry TD has indicated that Kerry would be well placed to access some of that funding. Kerry County Council recently lodged planning for the 32km greenway between Glenbeigh and Renard. The development is expected to prove a major boon for tourism in the Iveragh Peninsula with knock-on effects anticipated in Killarney. The project isn’t without its opposition the but Griffin believes any outstanding issues will be resolved. If the planning application is confirmed by An Bord Pleanála, Kerry County Council will be allowed to acquire the land necessary for the project via Compulsory Purchasing Orders (CPOs). In total, the development will affect 222 landholdings and 197 landowners. The Irish Farmer’s Association have described the council’s decision to proceed with CPOs as the “death knell” of the project. A similar greenway also appears to be on the horizon for the north of the county. Tralee Municipal District has approved plans for a 10.3km route between Tralee and Fenit.

Gardaí in Killarney have confirmed that they are investigating a number of allegations of assault stemming from incidents which occurred in Ballyspillane over recent weeks. Tensions are believed to be high in the estate as a result of a feud between families but speaking to the Killarney Advertiser yesterday, Sgt Dermot O’Connor said locals should have no specific cause for concern. “There are difficulties when parties engage - it gets extremely heated and very aggressive which is concerning – but as of now there have been no recent incidents,” Sgt O’Connor said. “At the moment everything is A-okay.”

The league has expanded this year with more teams and extra fixtures. Cormac said the big panel of players will all have roles to play in the 14 games before Christmas, including four back-to-back double-headers in what is quite a punishing schedule. Scotts Lakers captain Mark Greene said that it was great to bring National League basketball back to Killarney last season after such a long absence. He added that all the players are determined to push on and make a bigger impression on the league this time out. Scotts Lakers team manager John Brosnan echoed those sentiments and with the addition of some exciting new signings, it is a very strong squad this year. He said that the support from Scotts Hotel along with generous contributions from other club sponsors, local businesses, family and patron season ticket holders make it possible for the team to compete at national level. Exciting new American signing Seán O’Brien and Dutch power forward Papito Hersisia will both make their home debuts in Killarney Sports Centre this Saturday night. Tip-off is at 7.30pm but supporters are encouraged to arrive early with doors open from 6.30pm.

St Paul’s Basketball Club Killarney, playing under the Scotts Lakers banner again this season, welcome Fr Mathews of Cork for the first home game of the new National League season in Killarney Sports Centre this Saturday night at 7.30pm. Launching the new season campaign and sponsorship agreement, Scotts Hotel Managing Director Maurice O’Donoghue said Scotts are delighted to be involved with St Paul’s again this year and he is looking forward to some more big nights at Killarney Sports Centre. He added that the O’Donoghue family and the Gleneagle Group have a long tradition with Killarney basketball dating back almost 40 years. Three generations of the O’Donoghue family have had a great association with basketball in the town and Maurice said they were more than happy to continue with it. Words: Adam Moynihan The need for a new pedestrian crossing on Mission Road has been questioned by some locals who say people should simply use the crossing near the Plaza Hotel. The Killarney Advertiser has raised this issue on numerous occasions in the past and the topic was broached again last week by Cllr Mick Gleeson who said the lack of a suitable crossing was “akin to locking the doors to the National Gallery in Dublin.” Cllr Gleeson’s argument was that large groups of visitors were being left stranded as they tried to cross the busy Mission Road, and that a new crossing should be installed in the interest of public safety. Making it from Beech Road to Killarney House & Gardens was particularly difficult for the elderly, he added. I have to say, I’d be in agreement with Cllr Gleeson. Yes, there is a pedestrian crossing at the Plaza but that’s a major detour for anyone coming from Beech Road or further down Mission Road. It’s 200 metres from the Beech Road/Mission Road

junction to the crossing at the top of the road, and 200 metres back to the entrance of the park. There’s a reason people aren’t currently taking that route: it’s inconvenient. Instead, people are taking the matter into their own hands by trying to slip between traffic on one of the busiest roads in town. A pedestrian crossing is clearly needed at this location, in the interests of safety and convenience, and it is pleasing to note that Kerry County Council is moving forward with the development.

Words: Adam Moynihan Legendary footballer Kieran Donaghy has announced his retirement from the intercounty scene, bringing to an end a remarkable career in the green and gold of Kerry. Star, as he is affectionately known, enjoyed a glittering career for The Kingdom and the Austin Stacks clubman leaves the fold as one of the county’s all-time greats. He won four All-Irelands, eight Munster Championships and three National Leagues of our the course of the past 13 years. He was also named Footballer of the Year in 2006. In a statement released on Tuesday, Donaghy thanked his teammates, management, officials, family and friends for their support throughout his career. “Today I wish to announce my retirement from the Kerry Senior Football

team. The journey has been full of ups and downs but I never wanted it to end. It has surpassed even my wildest dreams, that a basketball kid from Tralee would end up playing 69 times in the championship over a 14-year period for the famous Green and Gold. “To every one of my Kerry teammates who I was lucky enough to have played with, I thank you for your patience, help and advice during those years. I’m blessed to have had the time of my life with you boys fighting on my back trying to win games for Kerry. We had some tough times, such is life but the wonderful stories and memories we shared will stick with me forever. “I’m a proud Kerry man and to have represented this county meant absolutely everything to me. As the great John B Keane once said, ‘I’m one lucky hoor!’”

Last week the Killarney Advertiser revealed that the Áras Phádraig on Lewis Road was the council’s preferred location for a new multi-storey car park. Reaction to the news has been mixed with locals coming out both in favour and against the proposed move. While some readers agreed that the disused theatre and adjacent car park would be an ideal site for such a development, others have expressed concerns that it would lead to traffic congestion in the area. With regards to our own artist’s design (pictured), one clarification that we’d like to make is that the multi-storey would be located at the current Lewis Road car park. The Áras, meanwhile, would be redeveloped as a civic amenities centre. Town Manager Angela McAllen confirmed at the last Killarney Municipal District meeting that any proposed multi-storey would have to be self-financed so a theatre with a restaurant/café would help in this regard.

Other cities only allow buskers to perform for a certain period of time, say two hours, after which they have to move on to a new location. It will be interesting to see what the council does about this issue as it is clearly something that affects the town’s brand.

A Killarney councillor has been told that there are no public issues or difficulties with the transportation of water through asbestos pipes. Cllr Brendan Cronin (pictured) raised the question of the use of asbestos pipes and the potential for associated health risks at recent meeting of Killarney Municipal District. Engineer Colm Mangan said there was no cause for concern as asbestos was only harmful if particles were inhaled. Irish Water, he added, adhered to EU regulations and World Health Organisation guidelines which state that the use of asbestos pipes is not harmful. V

Killarney needs new busking by-laws by St Patrick’s Day 2019 at the latest, according to former mayor and current Municipal District Councillor Niall Kelleher. Cllr Kelleher raised the issue at an MD meeting last week where he was told by town management that the matter would be discussed at an upcoming meeting of the Arts, Culture and Tourism Strategic Policy Committee. As highlighted in the Killarney Advertiser earlier this year, many locals have expressed concerns about the standard and tone of some of the town’s buskers. One performer in particular, Eric “Scotty” Gudmunsen (aka the Donald Trump guy) was singled out for the allegedly offensive nature of some of his material, and the topic was discussed by councillors at the time. Gudmunsen subsequently made amendments to his act. Other performers, it was noted by councillors, were of a low standard and some repeated their songs throughout the day, which was annoying for local employees. Other cities and towns have introduced auditions for buskers, which has apparently raised the quality of the music heard on the streets. In Galway, for instance, specific laws were brought in last May. The use of amplification is not permitted until after 6pm,

Killarney & Cahersiveen Katie & Mike Are Credit Unions To Merge

Cahersiveen Credit Union is to merge with Killarney Credit Union in a bid to secure its “long-term sustainability”, it has been revealed. Members of both branches have received assurances that they will be unaffected by this process and can continue to do business as usual with their respective credit unions. “Caherciveen Credit will undertake a ‘transfer of engagements’ and become part of Killarney Credit Union,” according to an official statement. “By combining resources the merged credit unions will have assets of over €140 million, savings of €123 million and combined reserves of under €17 million. The merger is expected to be completed at the end of September, subject to final approval from the Central Bank of Ireland. “The decision was taken for the credit unions to come together in order to improve efficiency for members of both credit unions, and so that the credit unions can work together to grow and meet the increasing demands of members for a wider range and depth of services. The credit union in Caherciveen Credit Union will now operate under a branch network structure with its head office located in Beech Road, Killarney.” Speaking about the ‘transfer of engagements’, Mark Murphy, CEO of Killarney Credit Union, said: “Both credit unions recognise and appreciate the loyalty and support of their members. For this we would like to thank our members and assure them that together, and with their continued loyalty, we will continue to make a positive difference. The merging of Killarney and Caherciveen Credit Unions will strengthen the service offering in both locations. We are taking decisions now which will result in enhanced products and services to our members, and we are very much looking forward to the continued role that we will play in the local community. As with every decision taken by this credit union, we were guided by the best interests of our members at all times”. Membership of the combined credit unions will now stand at 32,000 members (€25,000 in Killarney and €7,000 in Cahersiveen) and cover most of the South Kerry area. Killarney Credit Union has successfully undertaken a transfer of engagements with Kenmare Credit Union in 2015.

Rescue Services To Receive O’Flaherty Award This year marks the 75th Anniversary of the formation of The Rome Escape Line and the 11th year of the Memorial Commemoration of the Monsignor. It is organised annually to raise awareness of the humanitarian work carried out by the Monsignor when, during WW2 and together with his colleagues in the Rome Escape Line, he saved over 6,500 people from the clutches of the Nazis who had occupied Rome at the time. Earlier this year, a shortlist of seven nominations was submitted to the Independent Award Panel for consideration as potential recipients of the 2018 Hugh O’Flaherty Humanitarian Award. The Award will be presented by Killarney Mayor John Sheahan at the Award Ceremony in Killarney on Saturday, November 3 during the 11th Annual Hugh O’Flaherty Memorial Weekend. The 2018 Award is very different from previous Awards. Since its inception in 2009, although open to individuals and organisations, the Hugh O’Flaherty Humanitarian Award has always been presented to individual Humanitarian recipients, - the 2017 recipient was Loreto Sr Orla Treacy from South Sudan. This year for the first time, the Humanitarian Award does not go to an individual nor indeed to one humanitarian organisation, but to a collective of three Humanitarian Organisations under the heading of Ireland’s Rescue Services. The three organisations to receive the 2018 Humanitarian Award are: • Irish Coast Guard (Including Community & Local Rescue Services) • The RNLI (Royal National Lifeboat Institution) • KMRT (Kerry Mountain Rescue Team) Chair of the Hugh O’Flaherty Memorial Society Jerry O’Grady said: “This was unquestionably the most unusual nomination we have received over the last 10 years. It brought into focus the incredibly selfless humanitarian work done by the members of these organisations, the great majority of whom are unpaid volunteers”. The key point of the original nomination read: “Be it windswept high mountains, dangerous shorelines or stormy seas, when called upon, at a moment’s notice and without regard for the race or creed of those in need, they put their lives on the line to help others. Over the years, members of these rescue organisations have lost their lives while attempting to save others.”

Columnist Anne Lucey gives her take on happenings in Killarney, Kerry and beyond

Renovating Vacant Houses Is A Good Idea – But It’s Only One Step In a week in which we have seen attacks on Airbnb, the announcement of a new development agency to take over land banks from the councils and state bus and train companies (and neighbouring landowners) and sell them to construction companies, and riots on the streets in Dublin with masked thugs brought in from the UK to help the gardaí and to beat the students who occupy vacant properties, the most practical idea to solve the housing crisis is coming from Kerry, from Killarney MD Cllr Bobby O’Connell. The Fine Gael councillor’s idea is to count up the vacant houses in Kerry and those that have been derelict for years in the towns and villages (around 11,500 in Kerry, outside of holiday homes) and force the sale, by Compulsory Purchase Order, to the council for use as social housing, thereby revitalising the villages. It is a big idea. And it is one that is not too far from that of the 1980s, again under Fine Gael, at the height of a raging recession, when a grant to young couples saw thousands of falling down houses done up in rural areas. Cllr O’Connell said: “Houses are lying idle in towns and villages for years that are a blight on the landscape. Every village and town has them. And it’s quite obvious nothing is being done with them. The CPO option is an ideal mechanism to turn them around, help tackle the social housing problem, and revitalise villages.” As well as tackling the housing crisis

in the Killarney area where rents are at Dublin levels, schools and local shops as well as post offices in small towns would benefit, he believes. The call is backed strongly by Tourism Minister Brendan Griffin. He came out swinging for it on Radio Kerry and went so far as to say people can have “a fantastic quality of life for the sake of a 20-minute commute.” But this Utopian/village ideal set me thinking: I have heard this somewhere before. I went rooting through the bookshelves for my copy of The Deserted Village by Oliver Goldsmith. And there it all is, in a poem written in 1770. The ideal village of Sweet Auburn. In that “loveliest village of the plain” there is health and plenty and a schoolmaster teaching his little school and a preacher by the bedside, and

wise elders, and laughing children - it is all there. A century-and-a-half after Goldsmith, the ideal village appears as The Shire in the Lord of the Rings. It is emerging in Kerry once more! The only thing missing, of course, is “the commute”: the cost of car insurance and road tax. If Fine Gael are serious about revitalising villages and towns by “occupying” vacant buildings, they need to do something about public transport in and around villages and especially about the cost of car insurance which is obscene. A family of two parents working will need two cars to live in any of the “Auburns” of Kerry for work and for ferrying children. The other things these ideal villages will want is a good pub, and again this is linked to transport because you sure as hell won’t get any taxi late at night

to ferry you nine or ten miles out from Killarney, and if you do you won’t be going out again for a while with the cost of it. Goldsmith’s ideal village dates from the last great flight to the cities; shortly afterwards, industry began creeping out into small towns, revitalising them as train services and canals spread. Doing up houses to revive urban areas is a good idea – but it is only one step. Was it Con Houlihan, Cllr Bobby’s great friend, who said Dublin was only a series of villages? Like Kerry. The Castleisland journalist was correct, of course. The big difference is Dublin has always enjoyed good transport links. The council says it is considering the CPO option. But while the council can build up property banks, and do up the houses, the fact is they can’t frog march or even persuade housing applicants into villages. Rules on trying to give applicants their choice of location will have to go. And perhaps they should. Most people buying their own houses move to where they can afford to live, rather than where they want to live, let’s face it. And people scraping mortgages together move into houses that are not entirely decked out… And make do until they can afford the finishings. So, alongside transport, that’s another step politicians and local authorities may need to think about: aim for basic housing, that way more can be built for more people. In other words, a complete “thinking outside the box” is what is needed.

How Do We Train Our Doctors? Meanwhile, that cervical smear scandal continues to shock. The real culprit in all of it, apart from the testing errors, is, and I quote from Dr Gabriel Scally’s report, “paternalism is alive and well”. His report lays bare, from the testimony of dying women and their families, a sneering, condescending and coldly calculating attitude towards women from their medics. One grieving family who lost their mother were told, “Nuns don’t get cervical cancer.” And in any case she was a smoker! This is what a good many of the women diagnosed with cervical cancer experienced after smears were wrong-

ly read, and files “went missing”, from thier doctors and consultants, who were more focused it seems on protecting “the system” than on the individual women. This type of grossly insulting attitude will be no news to most women who attend doctors more than men because women bear children and women have all sorts of woman’s problems. It is not confined to GPs and consultants and I do wonder if it is wholly confined to male GPs and consultants either? A lot of women, particularly older women, will have met this sneering, condescending attitude in encounters with the religious too – both priests

and nuns – often in the education system right up to third level in this country. It probably stems from the same kind of secondary school education system, and the kind of medical/seminary training they all came through. If you are a highly intelligent human being, who has principles, you have to have independent mindedness knocked out of you, and you have to be fed doses of misogyny, subtly or openly, to consider half of humanity lesser beings. You have to be taught that protecting your own class is far more important than any individual woman... Which is something that needs to be

looked at. How do we train our doctors? What schools are they coming through? What attitudes are they bringing to the consultants couch? Go to a doctor or consultant in most European countries and they are a different beast entirely, not near as smug. Why is this? (Oh, and they are far cheaper!)

The INEC is the place to be on Wednesday, September 19 as the Kerry Hospice Models in Recovery fashion show takes place at 8pm (wine reception from 7.30pm). Tickets are €15 and are available from INEC booking office or Pat Doolan (085 1543514). All of the models are cancer survivors. Among the male models this year is Fr Pat O Donnell, parish priest in Rathmore, who is setting aside his clerical attire for the evening. Once again the MC for the evening is Noel Cunningham who was such a popular host last year. Donegal native Noel is GM of Harvey’s Point Hotel on the shores of Lough Eske near Donegal Town. He is a genial character and well known for his appearances on TV3 Ireland AM shows. This is the fifth year of the show which has been attracting big crowds. It is the biggest yearly fundraising event run by the Killarney Branch of Kerry Hospice Foundation. Presently Kerry Hospice has to raise €500,000 annually to fund the running costs of the new inpatient unit, day care unit and night nursing service. The Killarney Branch appreciates very much the ongoing help and support we receive from various quarters - the public, the business community, the media to mention a few.

Hard-Working Triona Shortlisted For Practice Nurse Of The Year

Practice nurse Triona Casey who has been shortlisted for a prestigious GP Buddy National GP Award.

There was cause for celebration at Killarney Medical Centre recently as the work of a dedicated and talented nurse was recognised at national level. Popular practice nurse Triona Casey, who hails from Kilcummin, has been shortlisted for Practice Nurse of the Year at the prestigious GPBuddy National GP Awards which take place in Dublin next Friday. The GPBuddy National GP Awards honour the tireless efforts of those working on the ground to improve the lives of patients all over the country. The awards, which are now in their third year, were introduced to acknowledge general practitioners and healthcare professionals for their dedication, commitment and innovative contributions to community-based healthcare in Ireland. Speaking to the Killarney Advertiser, Dr Michael Moloney of Killarney Medical Centre said Triona would be a very worthy recipient of the Practice Nurse of the Year Award. “We’re delighted and very proud that Triona is one of the three to be shortlisted, but we’re not at all surprised,” he said. “She’s a hard-worker, she’s enthusiastic and she’s extremely well qualified. She’s very well respected amongst all the staff, her peers and, most importantly, her patients.” “She has her own independent patient base and she’s qualified in many areas of medicine including chronic disease management, as well as this Triona has recently finished her nurse prescribing training which allows her to precribe for her patients. It’s a great achievement to be considered for such a major award.” Triona recieved her degree in Galway before spending seven years in Tralee General. She joined the team at Killarney Medical Centre in 2014 and she has been a practice nurse for 14 years in total. “It’s nice to be appreciated and to have the backing of your employers,” Triona said. “My role has been expanding and to have the encouragement of Dr Moloney and Dr O’Doherty is huge. I love my job so coming into work is

It’s a very up-and-coming practice.” Triona is clearly passionate about her job and she explained that her interest in medicine initially came from caring for a family member. “I got into nursing when my aunt’s little boy was diagnosed with cancer. We used to help her in the house when he was sick and that was my first taste of looking after people. There’s nothing else I’d do, to be honest. I love looking after people and if there’s something I can do to make someone’s day a bit easier, that’s the reward for me.” The GPBuddy National GP Awards take place next Friday in the Shelbourne Hotel in Dublin. Triona will be joined at the ceremony by her husband Damien with whom she has three children, Ben, Robbie and Nessa. Her mother, Mary, will also be in attendance, as will Damien’s mom, extended family and colleagues from Killarney Medical Centre.

Quest Killarney adventure race takes place in just over 4 weeks on 6th October. In the run up to it, every week here in the Killarney Advertiser, we will give you all the information you need to get ready for the world’s biggest adventure race.

WHAT’S THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN QUEST KILLARNEY & THE OTHER QUEST EVENTS? Quest Adventure Series is the overarching name for 5 different Quest events which take place each year. There are five comparable events in Ireland and the UK – Quest Kenmare, Glendalough, Wales, Achill & Killarney. These five Quest events are roughly the same in structure – they have 3 routes ranging in distance which you will run, cycle and kayak around. These can be broken down as follows; •

Pop Into AIB For Ireland’s Biggest Coffee Morning Next Thursday (September 20), AIB Kerry Local Market are getting behind the Irish Cancer Society’s Biggest Coffee Morning. AIB will be holding a coffee morning in their branches across the local market from 10am until 12pm in the hope of raising as much funds as possible for the Kerry Hospice Foundation. The team in Killarney participated last year and managed to raise €1,000 for this very worthy cause. Pop into your nearest AIB branch on Thursday for a cup of coffee. The only difference is Quest Killarney which has two more routes the SSICA ‘Pro’ at 73km (Expert is 83km) and the ‘Dual’ route which is 65km but doesn’t include kayaking. We also run a long-distance adventure race Quest 12/24 that takes place in August in south Kerry. These are 146km and 253km respectively but also entail, running, cycling and kayaking. All the events offer something different but all take place in epic, stunning, rural locations. They also draw adventure racers from all over Ireland and they world. Registration for Quest Kenmare and all other 2019 events will open in October. Here are next’s year’s dates. Quest Kenmare will take place on Saturday 2nd of March 2019. Quest Glendalough Saturday 6th April 2019.

Over 70 athletes from 14 countries took part in this year’s annual 200km nonstop Kerry Way Ultra Marathon. Participants witnessed heavy downpours by night and glorious rainbows by day over the course of the daunting 40-hour endurance race. The marathon traverses the MacGillycuddy’s Reeks and Iveragh Peninsula, stretching along The Wild Atlantic Way, along ancient trails, old roads and coastal cliffs. It is Ireland’s longest distance trail. The marathon was won by Gavin Byrne in a time of 26 hours and 38 minutes. Killarney native Seán Clifford, who lead for much of the way, came second in a remarkably close finish (26 hours and 41 minutes). Another Killarney native Joe O’Leary was joint third with Stephen Davis. Claire Morrissey won the ladies title in a time of 37 hours and 55 minutes. The second race, known as The Kerry Way Lite Marathon 50km, was won by Barry Drennan in a time of 5 hours and 51 minutes. First lady was Sarah Enright in 6 hours and 21 minutes. Race Director Eileen Daly remarked: “I will never underestimate the determination of the runners, marshals, support crews, volunteers, and the kindness of The Kerry Way Landowners.” All competitors bring their own support crews who meet them at various junctions along the route, a huge welcome especially during the night watch. Eileen added: “The Kerry Way Ultra Marathon is a non-profit ‘no trace race’, with the kind support of South Kerry Development Partnership, Torc Brewing Company, Portwest Outdoors, The Dromhall Hotel and Sheahan’s Centra. It has been awarded 4 points by the prestigious Ultra Trail du Mont Blanc (UTMB) which is a testament to the severity of the race.”

Plants are beginning to go into their dormant season and I, for one, am a secateur-happy person once mid-September is here! I love the sense of accomplishment one gets from just a small bit of pruning. It tidies up scraggly plants, gives light and is good for the growth of plants next year. As with everything, tools are of great importance. Many people are a little confused as to the tools they need. To start with the smallest: pruning snips. These are very sharp little cutters which are mainly used for dead-heading, or cutting flowers for inside. Secateurs: there are two types, anvil and bypass. The anvil secateurs has one blunt side and is usually used to prune away dead wood. A bypass secateurs has two sharp edges and is used for live wood. A shears is used to cut hedges. There are different lengths depending on what type of hedge you have. There are lovely little electric shears specially made for topiary, as well as trimmers with extensions for high hedges.

Loppers are used for branches and thick stems - like a secateurs, there are bypass and anvil heads available. I would always go for the bypass type as it cuts on two sides, minimising strain. Also, you tend to get what you pay for. Dearer tools often have a sharper edge and may be made of aluminium which is light, strong and does not rust. When pruning, always use a clean blade so that diseases are less likely to spread. Cut at an angle, away from a viable bud. Roses and fruit trees need to be pruned in such a way as to obtain an open cup shaped plant. That way light can get to the fruit and air can circulate, preventing disease. Shrubs can be cut back to the height at which you want them, just bear in mind the time of year at which they flower. Early spring flowering plants, as a general rule, should be pruned immediately after flowering to give them a chance to grow and recover. Summer flowering plants can be pruned in the autumn, so they enjoy the full growing season in the spring.

At this time of year you can also divide herbaceous plants. Those suitable for division are any clump forming plants such as hosta, miscanthus, grasses, lobelia, daisies and so on. Any plants which grow from a single stem are not suitable. To divide a plant, all you need do is dig it out carefully and wash the soil from the roots. Then, with a clean sharp knife, cut sections from the plant, keeping both a root and some greenery, or buds, on each section. Replant the original plant, backfilling with compost, and either pot up your new divisions so you can keep an eye on them, or plant in the garden ready for next year! Ryanair Cabin Crew Set Turkey Raises Interest For Biggest Ever Strike Rates To 24%

Ryanair cabin crew members from five European countries will go on strike on September 28, threatening hundreds of flights, a Belgian union said. Staff from Belgium, the Netherlands, Italy, Spain and Portugal will stage a stoppage on the Irish no-frills airline, the CNE union said, after several European labour unions met in Brussels. “Unfortunately, discussions continue without results,” CNE delegate Yves Lambot said at the meeting, describing negotiations with Ryanair management. Ryanair workers – pilots, ground staff and cabin crew – are demanding improved working conditions and want their contracts to be based on the law in their country of residence rather than Ireland.

“They have promised to change our contracts into national contracts by 2022. This is too late for us. We want 2019,” Lambot said. Shortly before the announcement in Brussels, Ryanair insisted that the strike would fail in its attempt to cause “travel chaos”. “The overwhelming majority of Ryanair’s flights and services that day will operate as normal,” the company’s chief marketing officer, Kenny Jacobs, said in a statement. The planned strike on September 28 will be the biggest strike in the company’s history, according to the unions. It’s understood that Irish cabin crews are not set to be involved the action.

The lira has risen against the dollar after Turkey’s central bank hiked interest rates to 24% yesterday - the biggest increase in President Tayyip Erdogan’s 15year rule. The hefty 6.25 percentage point rise is the bank’s latest attempt to stem the currency’s collapse. The lira is down 38% against the dollar this year despite Thursday’s slim gain. The move came despite Mr Erdogan repeating his opposition to high interest rates earlier in the day. He has repeatedly blamed the central bank for high inflation, which hit almost 18% last month, its highest level since 2003. However, a diplomatic row with the United States and concerns about the president’s influence on monetary policy have eroded investor confidence in Turkey in recent

months. Mr Erdogan, who has called himself an “enemy of interest rates”, chose his son-in-law, Berat Albayrak, as finance minister in July. Phoenix Kalen at Societe Generale said the market was both pleased and confused by the bank’s move. “It almost seems like it’s a game of ‘good cop, bad cop’ being played out between the Turkish authorities - with President Erdogan on the one hand still making statements regarding his dislike of interest rates and... a very sizeable reaction from the central bank in response to the recent inflationary and geopolitical developments,” she said. Brett Diment at Aberdeen Standard Investments said raising rates would put “Turkey on the slow road to recovering some monetary policy credibility, and that is critical”.

Amazon chief Jeff Bezos is putting $2bn into a charitable fund he has established to help the homeless and set up a new network of schools. The world’s richest man announced the move in a tweet, saying the charity would be called the Day One Fund. Mr Bezos - reportedly worth more than $164bn - has faced criticism for not doing more philanthropic work. And US Senator Bernie Sanders has criticised working conditions in Amazon warehouses. Mr Bezos asked on Twitter last year for suggestions on how he might use his personal fortune, which this year has soared due to Amazon’s surging share price and US tax cuts. He said on Thursday that the “Bezos Day One Fund” will contribute to “existing nonprofits that help homeless families” and also fund “a network of new, nonprofit, tier-one preschools in low-income commu-

nities”. The fund will be split between Day 1 Families Fund and Day 1 Academies Fund. “The Day 1 Families Fund will issue annual leadership awards to organizations and civic groups doing compassionate, needle-moving work to provide shelter and hunger support to address the immediate needs of young families,” Mr Bezos said in a tweet. The Day 1 Academies Fund will launch and operate a network of high-quality, full-scholarship, Montessori-inspired pre-schools in low-income and underserved communities, he said. “We will build an organization to directly operate these schools,” he added. Dublin Council Vote To Not Endorse Any Candidate

Dublin City Council has voted not to endorse a candidate for the 2018 presidential election, amid farcical scenes at City Hall yesterday afternoon. A special meeting of the council convened at 3pm when councillors heard from Áras hopefuls looking to obtain a nomination to get on the ballot for the October 26 election . They included Sarah-Louise Mulligan, Peter Casey, John Groarke, Gemma O’Doherty, Marie Goretti-Moylan and Norma Burke. To get on the ballot paper, candidates need the backing of at least four councils or 20 members of the Oireachtas, and each local authority can only endorse one candidate. All six candidates spoke for a number of minutes today, but none did enough to receive a nomination from Dublin City Council. A satirical speech from Burke, a last-minute addition who suggested setting up hunting lodges in the Phoenix Park and burning dead people for fossil fuels, provoked a particularly strong reaction.

Independent councillor Mannix Flynn interrupted Burke to call the speech “an insult to the office of President”, while Labour’s Dermot Lacey said her address was “deeply offensive”. Following the six speeches, councillors were asked to vote on a motion brought by Fine Gael’s Kieran Binchy not to endorse any candidate. However, the motion was delayed briefly after there was confusion about what councillors were voting on. Game On See Our Columnists’ Coverage Of The Week In Sport And Catch Up On Killarney Notes And On The Ball

Crokes Collapse Blows Championship Wide Open Words: Adam Moynihan

This time last week they were odds-on favourites to win a third consecutive county title but Dr Crokes’ 2018 championship aspirations were dealt a major blow on Sunday when they fell to a shock defeat to Kerins O’Rahilly’s in the Park. It was the Crokes’ first loss in the competition since October 2015 and not many people saw this one coming, especially not at half time when the Killarney side led by 10. Rahilly’s still trailed by nine heading into the final 10 minutes but they showed tremendous heart to stage one of the most unlikely comebacks you’re ever likely to see. In fact, many of the crowd in attendance missed the thrilling finale because they had long since left the stadium. To be honest, I was nearly gone myself. Guys like David Moran, Barry John Keane and Tommy Walsh really came to the fore as Strand Road outscored the reigning champions 3-7 to 0-3 in the final 15 minutes plus additional time. Mike Quirke’s men were rampant down the stretch and if they can replicate this kind of intensity moving forward, they could go a long way. Crokes, meanwhile, will be left to wonder what went wrong. There were murmurs around town that they weren’t exactly firing on all cylinders but it was still a huge upset by anyone’s standards. I can’t recall ever seeing a Crokes team capitulating in such emphatic fashion and it’s bound to dent the players’ confidence. They wouldn’t be human if it didn’t. Their performance in the opening round against St Kieran’s was below par (they actually trailed with five minutes to play) but that was dismissed as an anomaly. In light of last weekend’s disastrous result, there are now serious doubts about their form. And form isn’t something that can be turned on or off with the flick of a switch. Having said that, no one in Kerry will be writing Crokes’ obituary just yet. They’re not out of the competition and you would expect them to defeat An Ghaeltacht tomorrow in Round 3 to advance to the quarters. This team have been utterly dominant in recent years and, despite what happened last Sunday, it’s still hard to envisage them not being a factor in the latter stages of this year’s championship.

East Kerry are now the bookies’ favourites to lift the Bishop Moynihan Cup following another comprehensive victory in Killarney, this time against Dingle. The East were actually down two at the interval but they eventually racked up 6-15 en route to a handy 17-point win. David Clifford, who bagged a brace, showed his class once again and in Evan Cronin, Kevin McCarthy, Dara Moynihan, Paudie Clifford and Jack Sherwood they have a forward line that can torment any defence in the county. The Killarney Legion are also safely through to the quarters after a fine win against Mid Kerry in Killorglin. Conditions were tough and the hosts

raced into an early lead thanks to two quick-fire goals, but the lads responded well and I thought we were good value for the win in the end. Damien O’Sullivan was excellent at full back and I was also really impressed with Aidan Slattery who put in a serious shift at half forward. It has been a good start and it’s nice to take the direct route to the last eight but there’s a long way to go yet. Austin Stacks defeated South Kerry by a point in the other winners’ round game so they will join Rahilly’s, East Kerry and Legion in the hat for the quarter-final draw.

East Kerry 6-15 Dingle 2-10 Good to see David Clifford back in action after injury and he contributed well with 2-2. Dingle led at half time. Their best player was Paul Geaney who scored his first goal in the third minute and scored 2-2 overall. Dara Roche goaled for East Kerry. In the second half East Kerry ripped Dingle apart with goals from Evan Cronin, Dara Roche, David Clifford and Noel Duggan. This is a good East Kerry team but the full back line needs to tighten up. Former Kerry minor Seán O’Leary did very well. Legion 2-13 Mid Kerry 2-9 Legion advance to the next round after scoring a well-deserved four-point win over Mid Kerry in Killorglin. Mid Kerry got off to the better start but Legion settled well playing with the breeze and defending

the town goal. Conor Keane reacted best in a crowded goal and raised their first green flag, reducing the deficit to a single point 1-4 to 2-2, by the 20th minute. Darran O’Sullivan edged Mid Kerry a point ahead and, after an equaliser, Jamie O Sullivan then put Legion a point ahead. A great Legion goal just before half-time put them further ahead. Half-time score: Legion 2-8 Mid Kerry 2-3. A string of points in the second half from James O ‘Donoghue put clear daylight between the teams while Mid Kerry’s scoring efforts were spasmodic. They were playing catch up on a determined Legion team. I was disappointed with the performance of referee Jer Lynch from Ballmacelligott. He left far too much fouling go unpunished. James O’Donoghue in particular came in for harsh treatment and it was

too late when the ref started dishing out cards in the second half, including two black cards. Jack Brosnan, full-back on the Mid Kerry team, is a son of Donal Brosnan who played for Legion for many years. The Kerry trio of Donnchadh Walsh, Darran O’Sullivan and Peter Crowley all played poorly. Kerins O’Rahilly’s 3-18 Dr Crokes 2-16 Hard to believe Crokes lost a 10-point lead at halftime. It was 2-10 to 0-6 at he break with David Shaw very impressive. He set up Brian Looney for first goal and then scored one of his own. It was still all Crokes who led by nine points until 50th minute when Tommy Walsh scored two goals within two minutes. Crokes wilted with Barry John Keane scoring seven points. Micheál Burns and Kieran O’Leary scored four each for Crokes.

Fitzmaurice Was Wrong To Close The Gates The late Páidí ó Sé said that the Kerry supporters were animals expecting to win an All-Ireland every year and Eamonn Fitzmaurice returned to the subject last weekend in an interview with Dara ó Cinnéide for Radio na Gaeltachta. “In Kerry, people expect a lot all the time,” he said. “It doesn’t matter if you ask them to be patient, they want the All-Ireland and it’s as simple as that. And if the All-Ireland isn’t in Kerry then that year is a failure. But I believe it can often take a few years to win the All-Ireland - you have the ups and downs, the tough lessons, the development - and then when the day comes, they are all so valuable.” He added to ó Cinnéide’s promptings: “You also need an incredible amount of energy for the job. It’s a full-time job. I’m not in favour of professionalising it, that’s another discussion, but the only way I could do more in the job is if it were full-time, meeting each player regularly, meeting management, and education. You can still do it (without being fulltime), but only if everything is going your way with a

great team, a great panel.” Fitzmaurice also spoke about the controversy surrounding the closed training sessions, saying that he was amused at that because they only closed the gates of the Fitzgerald Stadium from May and that people were free to watch for the first months of the year. I wrote about this decision in earlier editions of On the Ball and hit out strongly against this decision to close the gates and denying loyal supporters the chance to see how the players were shaping up in training. I mentioned in particular astute readers of the game who loved to assess how the various Kerry players were going in training. I think of very loyal Kerry supporters such as Johnny Culloty, Donie Sheehan, Jimmy O’Brien, Mike Allen and Fr Paddy O’Donoghue. I have no objections to closing the gates on certain sessions when they were trying out certain gameplan tactics but it was a wrong decision by Fitzmaurice to close the gates for all training decisions. How will that operate in the Centre of Excellence in Currans? Will the gates also be closed there? I hope

that the new Kerry manager will take the sensible approach and open the gates, keeping the loyal Kerry supporters on board. Fitzmaurice spoke of his admiration for the Dublin team and their discipline, and said, contrary to popular belief that Dublin did so well because of financial resources, that he believed the most valuable thing they have is the quality of their management team. “I have great respect for Jim Gavin, and great respect for his backroom team, he has fantastic people working with him and I think that’s the most important thing in terms of resources. People give out and it’s fine to have resources but a euro doesn’t make any difference to a player. But a person does, and he has brilliant people working with him.” On a possible return to a role in the future, Fitzmaurice said: “I don’t think so. There are plenty of other good people in the county who will do a great job. In the short-term, it’s not on the cards. Should someone come back at all? I’m not sure. Maybe at another level.” What level does he have in mind? I don’t know.

National League Division One LIT 60 | Scotts Lakers 67 It was a winning start to the new season for the Scotts Lakers against LIT in Limerick IT Sports Hall last Saturday night. In a low scoring encounter that was keenly contested for long periods, the Killarney side gained a slight upper hand in the final quarter to secure the victory. The Lakers paraded new American signing Seán O’Brien for this match and he didn’t disappoint, hitting 22 points which included 16 in the second half alone. His ball-handling skills, vision, control and superb defence were evident throughout and the Killarney side appear to have signed a quality player who should be an influential force in the league this season. Equally impressive was Dutch power forward Papito Hersisia, who also chipped in with 22 points. Lakers coach Cormac O’Donoghue started Hersisia and O’Brien alongside Andrew Fitzgerald, Shane McCarthy and team captain Mark Greene. Early baskets from Hersisia and O’Brien kept the Lakers in touch while Shane McCarthy and Philip O’Connor also added scores, but the Limerick side enjoyed a slight advantage and led 18-15 at the end of the first period. Limerick’s European players Egidijus Baksys and Deividas Venckunas were making their presence felt while Americans Matt Scamaffo and Andrew Curiel were also effective. The Killarney side closed the gap in the second quarter with Justin Tuason and Marko Bencic contributing well upon their introductions and it was the game was tied game at 33 at the interval. Hersisia and O’Brien continued to be the main scoring threats for the Lakers while Mark Greene and Cian Clernon also added baskets and the Killarney side led 53-49 entering the final quarter. With Dylan O’Sullivan and Andrew Fitzgerald netting further scores, along with the dynamic duo of Hersisia and O’Brien, Scotts Lakers opened up an eight-point lead and held on to win by seven in the end. While it was great to secure the victory, it wasn’t an exceptional team performance from the Scotts Lakers. Huge improvements will be required all around if they are to make any serious impact in the league this season. The most alarming statistic from the night was a return of just one three-pointer from 27 attempts from outside the arc. It’s safe to say that the team is more than capable of improvement in this area when they return to more familiar surroundings in Killarney Sports Centre this weekend. Coach O’Donoghue used 10 players last Saturday night with each one featuring in the scoring returns. The Lakers were slightly under-strength without the injured Dailian Mason and Gaelic footballers Séamus Brosnan, Pádraig Lucey and Paul Clarke, who were on County Championship duty.

It has been a long six months for the Killarney basketball fraternity but the wait is finally over: the Scotts Lakers line out for their first home game of the 2018/19 season tomorrow evening at Killarney Sports Centre. Bahamian-American Antuan Bootle will not line out for the Lakers this year but it appears as though Coach Cormac O’Donoghue has managed to strengthen his squad with the addition of three new foreign players. Dutch power forward Papito Hersisia will add size down low, American guard Seán O’Brien was a last-minute but potentially crucial signing and Marko Bencic, the son of St Paul’s Director of Coaching Vojkan Bencic, has also joined the squad. There’s a bit of a buzz around the place about the new additions, especially O’Brien who could have the makings of a really influential player. Earlier this year the Philly native led Colgate University to the NCAA Division 1 post-season for the first time in the school’s history and his all-action playing style is sure to endear him to the Lakers faithful. Séamus Brosnan has also transferred from St Mary’s Castleisland and he and former Blue Demons player Shane McCarthy will bring some much-needed experience to the fold. O’Brien and Hersisia (22 points each) led the Lakers to a good win in their first game away to LIT last weekend but, worryingly, the team made just one of their 27 three-point attempts. They’ll need a major improvement in that particular category if they’re to make it two from two against Fr Mathews this weekend. Shooter Dailian Mason is expected to return from injury so that will be a boost, although O’Donoghue is likely to be without the services of Pádraig Lucey, Séamus Brosnan and Paul Clarke who are all currently playing football. Mathews beat the Lakers in the Auracle in 2017 but the Killarney men got their revenge in the quarter-final of the President’s Cup when they ran out 92-86 winners. That victory in Cork was one of the Lakers’ best performances of last season and they’ll be hoping for something similar in front of their home fans on Saturday. The club will be aiming high this year and a good start at home would really set the ball rolling. 12 months ago, St Paul’s were gearing up for their first season back in the National League after a nine-year hiatus and I doubt anyone could have anticipated how well their debut season would go. On the court, things were fairly up and down but O’Donoghue’s side finished on a high when they clinched the Division 1B title with a thrilling home win against Kilkenny. Off the court, meanwhile, the 2017/18 season was a resounding success. Supporters packed into the Killarney Sports Centre as the league’s newest team attracted the league’s largest crowds. Despite periods of inconsistency, the team really managed to capture the imagination of local sports fans and that final win will live long in the memory for all who were in attendance. With a year under their belt and a host of new signings, the Lakers appear to be better equipped (on paper at least) to make some real waves in Division One this season.

The Ice-Man Stays In F1 Kimi Räikkönen, nicknamed the Ice-man, is set for a sensational switch from Ferrari to Sauber which will keep him in Formula One for at least one more year. The Finn was out of contract at the end of the season. Ferrari confirmed this week that they would not be retaining his services beyond the current season at the Italian Grand Prix. Current Sauber driver Charles Leclerc swaps seats with the Finn in a deal that sees Räikkönen, 38, remain on the grid for 2019. Reports on the deal suggest that the former world champion could move behind the scenes into management within the Swiss team, as well as receive part-ownership. It now appears Räikkönen could also be set for a strong future upstairs in F1. The straight-talking Finn will add spice to the

headlines in the way that Bernie Ecclestone did during his dictatorship of F1. The championship battle resumes this weekend under floodlights in Singapore.

Munster’s first away match of the new PRO14 season resulted in a horrible defeat for the Red Army as they were heavily beaten by Glasgow at Scotstoun on Friday night. Losing 25 points to 10 does not bode well for Munster ahead of the visit of the Osprey’s to Cork tonight. Munster were deplorable in the first half as Glasgow enjoyed over 85% of the possession in the first half. Munster made some changes early in the second half and the tide turned somewhat, but it wasn’t enough to turn the match in favour of the visitors. Glasgow’s defence was a sight to behold as they repelled phase after phase of Munster pressure. Billy Holland and the outstanding Neil Cronin both left the field of play injured, so Munster will be hoping they return to action as soon as possible. Closer to home, the Munster Junior Leagues return to action next weekend following the summer break. This year sees West Kerry sides Killarney RFC, Tralee RFC, Corca Dhuibhne and Killorglin RFC compete in the same division with some mouth-watering matches in prospect. The first match for Killarney sees Tralee visit Aghadoe on Sunday, September 23. This should be a cracker of a game and we would like to invite everyone to Aghadoe to enjoy some fantastic rugby and support our team. On Sunday last the Club were at Dooks Golf Links for our Annual Exchange Day which is always a highlight on the Killarney members’ calendar. Sunday last the club took part in the annual Mar Loughlan competition on Lough Lein . Having won it outright in 2017 , we were not successful this year but gave a very good account of ourselves nevertheless . IRISH OFFSHORE ROWING CHAMPIONSHIPS: Well done to our two crews who competed on Saturday last in the Irish Offshore Rowing Championships held in O’Carroll’s Cove. Competing against experienced coastal clubs, the two Muckross boats put in strong performances to both qualify for the final. In Heat 1 , the crew of Marko Tot, Tim O’Shea, Jeremy Kenny and Sean Coffey finished fourth in a time of 19:54 over the 4km course with Courtmacsherry, Myross and Castletownbere taking the first three places. In Heat 2, the quad of Paul Griffin, John Buckley, Paul Bradley and Brendan O’Neill stormed to cross the line first over Cairndhu of Antrim and Galley Flash of Cork in a time of 20:06. NATIONAL INTER-COUNTY: While it was not meant to be for the Kerry Gents team in the Mens event, certainly the club can be proud of its hosting of one of the most prestigious events in the PPUI calendar that saw teams from 16 different counties travel to our course for a challenge they certainly found most tricky, especially at our signature 16th hole. We must acknowledge the tremendous work that went on in getting the course ready by our Grounds Committee, the catering that was provided to a large volume of people, the parking of cars in both Fitzgerald Stadium and Dr Crokes which we are thankfully to them for providing to us over the course of both days. Commiserations to Damien Fleming, John McGrath and Jason O’Brien along with the rest of the Kerry team in having to make do with fourth overall but they certainly gave it their best shot. RICKY KELLY: We won’t be resting on our laurels for too long as this weekend sees us host the Ricky Kelly Memorial in aid of the Ian O’Connell Trust. It all kicks off on Friday (4pm-6.30pm), Saturday (10am6.30pm) and Sunday (10am-3pm, Last Card) with cost of entry €90 per team (adult) and €30 for U-16 teams. The format is a Three Ball Scramble with play over 18 Holes and players allowed to enter on multiple teams this year. Killarney Scouts Boys and Girls

Killarney Scouts will welcome new members who wish to join the following scout sections: Cubs for boys and girls aged 9-11 years / Scouts for boys and girls aged 12 - 15 years / Venture Scouts for young people aged 16 - 17 years. Our Beaver Section is already full. For adults who wish to become leaders, no previous experience is necessary and we will provide full training. Registration for all sections will take place at 7-8 pm on Wednesday 19 September at Lissivigeen National School for both existing and new members.

FIXTURES: Under 12 Girls 1 will be home to Inbhear Sceine Gaels, Thurs, 13th at 6.30pm in East Region League. The Mid Kerry minor championship will begin on Saturday, 22nd September at 5pm with Beaufort away to Laune Rangers in a preliminary round. In the Mid Kerry senior championship, Beaufort will play the winner of Keel v Laune Rangers in the semi-final. Date to be arranged. EXERCISE CLASSES: Autumn classes will begin on Thursday, 13th September. Active retired gym and pilates will be on Thursdays from 11am to 12 midday. Pilates class on Thursday at 7pm. Dr Crokes Club

SENIOR COUNTY CHAMPIONSHIP: - 2nd Round, Dr Crokes 2-17 Kerins O’Rahillys 3-18, Played in Fitzgerald Stadium. In a game in which the teams were evenly matched in the first ten minutes and were level at three points each we got well on top in the remaining twenty minutes of the half. We scored two goals and seven points in this period against our opponents 0-3. This gave us a lead of 2-10 to 0-6 at half time. Kerins O’Rahillys had the first two points of the second half but we had our ten point lead back by the 40th minute. Our opponents outscored us four points to three in the next ten minutes to go. This still left us nine points clear with ten minutes to go. They had the strong breeze behind them and there was always the danger that if

they scored a goal it could be game on. This they did and in the remainder of normal time and the seven minutes of injury time they outscored us 3-6 to 0-2 for a four point win. They had finished much the stronger and would have to be praised for their great comeback. We are still in the competition and I know we will pick ourselves up and make a great effort to win our Round 3 game next weekend and qualify for the last eight. DEVELOPMENT FUND: Dr Crokes Club are embarking on a fundraising initiative to help upgrade the current facilities of our grounds as it has been 12 years since serious work has been carried out. There are fantastic prizes to be won with the first prize a Nissan Pulsar Executive Class Car and second prize is a four night stay for two people in New York including flights. We have 10 prizes in total and the draw will take place on December 20th 2018.Tickets are €10 each or a book of 6 for €50. There will be an additional draw of €1000 for those who purchase a full book for €50. Tickets can be purchased in the Tatler Jack, Club members or Kerry Shop in Killarney Outlet Centre.

East Kerry 3-14(23) Eoghan Ruadh 4-06 (18). Very best wishes to East Kerry play in the Final V Mid Kerry. KERRY U14/U15: County Senior Championship, best of luck to all clubs from East Region in next round SFC. Minor County championship, Best of luck to East Kerry & st. kierans in Minor County Final. KERRY U14/U15: players played Galway in Currans on Saturday. The teams played two games each on the day with all players getting plenty of game time. Fantastic football was displayed by all teams with a high standard of kicking evident in all matches. It was great to see such a large volume of support for all teams which was much appreciated by all players and management teams. Thanks to John Daly (Currans) for his support on the day together with all local referees. PJ Reidy Kerry U14 and Vince Cooper Kerry U15 GDA were delighted with the event on the day. COLM COOPER U13 GAMES: Colm Cooper U13 tournament took place in Lewis Road on Saturday. The standard of football on display was excellent with all teams showing great promise on the day. Corofin took the shield decider defeating a gallant St Pats Donabate team in a hard fought game. The cup decider was a cracking game with Castlebar Mitchels defeating St Colmcilles in a high scoring match. Thanks to all the local referees for the great support on the day. John O Shea (Dr Crokes) and his hard working committee organised the well run event. Past member Denis Coffey of the Dr Crokes club was remembered on the day. JUNIOR CHAMPIONS: Congratulations to our Senior Ladies team who won the County Junior C Championship on Sunday when a storming second half saw them emerge victorious over Cromane on a score of 4-13 to 1-09, well done to the players and management alike. O SULLIVAN CUP: (East Kerry Junior Championship). Kilcummin 1-14 Dr Crokes 1-13. Kilcummin captured the O’Sullivan Cup on Tuesday last in Spa after an epic and entertaining encounter with Dr Crokes. This game was always in the balance to the final whistle but Kilcummins hunger saw them victorious after a famine of twenty five years. Shane McSweeney was a well-deserved Man of the Match but there was a broad smile on the faces of fans and players alike when Ger Sheehan held aloft this coveted trophy. ALL IRELAND CHAMPIONS: Kerry minors homecoming- Hosted in Kilcummin GAA grounds solely for the first time ever a massive crowd turned out to make this a marvellous occasion for all. The welcome afforded to Paul O’Shea (Capt), Keith O’Leary and their fellow players will live long in the memory of these young men.

With James Foley part of the management team it is fair to say that this was indeed a glorious night for the host club. A tremendous amount of work went in to the logistics of running this event so a word of thanks to stewards, Ladies committee, rural development workers, DJ Gav, general members and general public for co-operation and involvement. A word of thanks also to local clubs who offered assistance on the night. EAST KERRY: The East Kerry team continue on their winning ways in the County Championship with victory over Dingle. Kilcummin have nine players on the panel. They are now through to the Quarter Final in a couple of week’s time. LOTTO: There was no winner on Sunday 9th September 2018. Numbers drawn were 6, 13, 16, 18. Next Draw Sunday 23th September 2018. Jackpot now €13,500.

Legion GAA

COUNTY CHAMPIONSHIP ROUND 2: Mid-Kerry 2-09 – Killarney Legion 2-13. Legion travelled to Killorglin expecting a tough encounter from favorites Mid-Kerry and that’s exactly what they got. Stunned with two goals in the opening minutes Legion had it all to do midway through the half chasing a 2-02 to 0-02 lead. To their credit through the midfield pairing of Jack O’Neill and Billy Maguire they steadied themselves and overturned the deficit by half time going in with a lead of 2-3 to 2-08 with goals coming from in-form Conor Keane and James O’ Donoghue and two cracking long-range points from the boot of Jamie O’ Sullivan. Legion continued to extend their lead 2-06 to 2-13 with some well taken frees and excellent work by Aidan Slattery, Legion looked to be well on the way into the next round. Mid-Kerry for their part continued to push hard but couldn’t crack a stubborn Legion defense who held out for the final whistle. Legion will be well happy with this team performance as were the many supporters who travelled on the day. KILLARNEY LEGION CLUB DAY OUT: This is guaranteed going to be a great day out, Travel through the 3 lakes of Killarney by boat to Lord Brandon’s Cottage & walk down through the Gap of Dunloe, where Pat Moynihan has kindly donated his time & red bus to transport the gang back to Killarney. Mid Kerry U16’s have qualified for the County Championship defeating Kenmare District 5-16 to 1-04 (see report attached). The date time and venue for Final to be confirmed. Garveys Supervalu Senior County Football Championship Mid Kerry lost out to Killarney Legion last Sat evening on a score line of 2-13 to 2-09. They have now been drawn against St Brendan’s in rd 3. This game will be played next weekend date venue and time to be confirmed. MID KERRY MINOR CHAMPIONSHIP: Laune Rangers host Beaufort on Sat 22nd Sept at 5pm (extra time playable).
