Big screen for big match at Killarney Racecourse
Killarney football fans who are unable to get to Dublin for the All Ireland final will be able to watch the big game on an open air television screen just ten minutes-walk from the town centre. The Kerry v Galway clash is set for 3:30pm next Sunday July 24 | By Sean Moriarty As ever, tickets are in high demand and not everyone will be lucky enough to get one of the 75,000 or so tickets on offer. Killarney Valley Classic and Vintage Club’s annual show is scheduled for the same day at Killarney Racecourse. It returns after a two-year lay-off and it is one of the biggest shows of its kind in the county Organisers were concerned that the clashing match would take crowds away from their event. They were also concerned that those who did attend would leave early so they could watch the match.
Both scenarios would detract from the event so the organisers came up with what they believe is the perfect solution. They have booked a large-screen outdoor television for the day. Families will be able watch the match in the beautiful surroundings of the racecourse. The venue offers a safe location for children, and the car show can go ahead without any fear of a crowd loss due to the game. “It is win win for everyone,” said Killarney Valley Classic and Vintage Club’s James Looney who is one of the organisers of the event. “It is ideal for families, we have done something similar before when we had

a Harvest festival that clashed with a big game and that worked perfect. It is the best of both worlds, see the cars and the match at the same time and there is room for children to run around in a safe environment.” Admission is set at €5 per adult and children go free – this is the same ad-
mission fee announced before the addition of the big screen. The show will open to the public at 11am but all show cars need to be on site before 10am. Those interested in showing a car should contact Tom Leslie on 087 238 3809.
Town decked in green and gold ahead of All Ireland final | By Sean Moriarty Anticipation for next Sunday’s All Ireland Football final are reaching fever pitch in Killarney. On Thursday this week contractors working on behalf of Killarney Municipal District and Killarney Chamber of Tourism and Commerce started erecting green and gold flags and buntings all over the town centre. The Tree Brothers, better known for their emergency work clearing trees during
winter storms were in action on a mobile platform throughout the morning. Operated by brothers Ger and TJ Brosnan from Faha, The Tree Brothers put their height skills to the test as the turned to town into a sea of green and gold. They were clearly enjoying their new task and were getting a great reaction for locals and tourists as they went about their decoration job. “It is great craic,” Ger told the Killarney Advertiser. “Everyone is getting in to the spirit of it – we are in an All-Ireland final – everyone is getting behind the team.”
We are in for a scorcher Met Eireann and Kerry County Council rarely issue weather warnings for good weather. They are regular enough features of an Irish winter and yellow wind and rain warnings are common enough in the darker months. Both organisations have issued a warm weather warning for the weekend. Temperatures are set to exceed 30 de-
grees in some areas. “Ireland will experience a hot spell Sunday and into early next week. Day time temperatures will widely reach the high twenties, possibly exceeding 30 degrees in some locations,” said a statement. “It will remaining uncomfortably warm overnight too.” The warning remains in effect until next Wednesday, July 20.

NEW STORE: Tina Tynan officialy opened her new health store, Anam Cara on Friday. Photo: Marie O'Carroll-O'Sullivan
GONE: A crashed car that was taking up space in the car park adjacent to St Mary’s Cathedral has been removed. Last week the Killarney Advertiser reported how a town centre car park is being used to store a crash-damaged car. Within hours of the Killarney Advertiser hitting the shelves last Friday the car was removed by a specialist removal firm.
Official opening of Anam Cara Healthstore New Street’s latest retail offering, Anam Cara Healthstore, officially opened last Friday | By Sean Moriarty Operated by well-known local health food specialist and holistic therapist Tina Tyan, Anam Cara Healthstore offers access to the very best products from around the world, while at the same time supporting local businesses. Tina previously worked in a number of health stores in Killarney including JJ’s Nu Era on Plunkett St before that wellknown shop closed in 2018 after 22 years in business. Tina always harboured an ambition to run her own health store business and that dream became a reality eight weeks ago when Anam Cara Healthstore opened to
the public. She took a bit of time to find her feet and once operations were up and running properly she officially opened her New St premises on Friday last. “I have worked in the health food sector all my life,” she told the Killarney Advertiser. “It is going splendid, I am feeling the love, loads of people are sending me flowers and well wishes,” The official opening was performed by Town Mayor and Killarney Chamber of Tourism and Commerce president Niall Kelleher. In time Tina hopes to take on staff when the shop gets more established.

Stage set for Killarney Musical Society's return Killarney Musical Society will re-launch in September after three years off stage. The group is hosting a launch night on September 2 ahead of a planned run of performances next March. The plan is to create a musical variety, with the best hits from the society’s past shows like Beauty and the Beast, Mama Mia and Matilda. “A musical journey is our working title. Members have given their preference, auditions will give individuals the opportunity to perform a favourite and the
production team will put it all together. This will all happen in early September. We haven’t been on stage since before COVID so we want people to know we’re back and can’t wait to spend time rehearsing again,” said PRO Linda O’Donoghue. “Our producer Oliver Hurley and musical director Jimmy Brockie are eager to begin rehearsals in September. We will have our launch night on September 2. Members, past or present and anyone interested in becoming a member can come along. If you have itchy feet, enjoy singing or you would like to tread the boards this is the place to be.”

The same management team, headed up by Paul Sherry, will remain in place. “On behalf of Green Property Ltd I would like to thank you for your support over the last years and I look forward to continuing our relationship on behalf of the new owner C.O.K Property Ltd, “ said Mr Sherry. “The new owners have ambitious plans for the centre . The local management of myself and Noreen O’ Sullivan will remain in place and continue to be your reference point.”
Celtic Football club set to make its "mark" Three years after being awarded the coveted FAI Club Mark, Killarney Celtic Football Club will finally get official recognition. The club was awarded the Club Mark in July 2019 but the pandemic prevented the award presentation. On Tuesday next week FAI President Gerry McAnaney will present the award to club officials at their grounds in Derreen. The distinction is awarded, by the governing body, to clubs that meet criteria like off-field management, promotion and growth of the sport within the club’s communities and
high standards of achievement and best practices. The club were followed by their crosstown rivals Killarney Athletic Football Club which was also awarded the FAI Mark in July 2020. “This is the highest award available at the moment,” said club MC Padraig Harnett. “The award is for grassroots clubs who have demonstrated best practice in their management and administration. By reaching these levels of excellence off the field it results in having a stronger club and a stronger game.” The presentation will take place Tuesday July 19 at 1230pm at Dereen.

Bridget Delaney of the Killarney Cardiac Response Unit has been unveiled as the MACE Unsung Heroes Overall Community Award winner in recognition of the support for the National Ambulance Service in Killarney in responding to calls relating to heart attacks, cardiac arrests, choking and stroke The MACE Unsung Heroes Overall Community Award is reserved for a person or team who do truly remarkable things for the betterment of their community. The nationwide MACE Unsung Heroes Community Awards were initially launched in 2020 by Ireland rugby star Johnny Sexton to stimulate community spirit. Bridget Delaney is one of the members who was nominated for a MACE Unsung Heroes award and has been a volunteer with the responders group since it first started in 2015. TRIPLE: Ella Cremin won three medals in Limerick
Swimmers success in National competition Two members of the Killarney Swimming Club were celebrating this week after strong performances in the National Division 2 Competition at the University of Limerick. Ella Cremin (13) from Lisivigeen came home with two gold medals and one silver. Ella came first in the 100 metres
Backstroke and the 50M Freestyle, and also came second in the 200 metres. Ian Coffey (16) from Muckross had two excellent swims where he got two Personal Bests in the 200 metres Freestyle and 100 metres Breaststroke. This is a huge achievement for Ella and Ian and for Killarney Swimming Club,” said club member Elaine O'Donoghue.
Killarney is a moving car park Killarney is a moving car park according to one elected councillor. Cllr Donal Grady was responding to a motion put forward by council colleague Maura Healy-Rae at the July Killarney Municipal District Meeting. She asked the council executive to address the constant traffic gridlock on the Mission Road. Several ideas were floated included the potential to put an additional entrance to the Beech Road car park to take traffic away from the lower end of Mission Road.
Council officials said that several new road schemes, including the proposed Farranfore to Killarney bypass and the Lewis Road junction revamp would all take traffic from Mission Road. “This can’t be allowed to go on. We can’t wait for the bypass or any link road. It’s just ridiculous at this point, Cllr Healy-Rae told the meeting. The meeting heard how motorists could experience delays of up to 30 minutes along Mission Road during peak times. “Killarney is known as a moving car park and we’re going to stay that was a for a long time,” warned Cllr Grady.

THE KILLARNEY ADVERTISER SAYS Our journalist SEAN MORIARTY shares his thoughts on the week's news
It is simply not paying people to go to work There are 1,118 people signing of for unemployment benefits in the Killarney Local Electorate Area.
KEEP A LOOKOUT: 'The Strawboys' are set to make a surprise appearance somewhere in Killarney on July 17.
'The Strawboys' set for surprise appearance | By Sean Moriarty Visitors and locals alike will have to have their eyes peeled on July 17 when an unusual dance act is set to ‘pop-up’ in town. Dance Artist Rob Heaslip is reviving the cultural tradition of 'The Strawboys' made famous by the Wren Boys who once paraded through the streets, towns and fields of Ireland. From July 14 to July 19, pop up performances of ‘The Strawboys’ will take place all over Kerry in town centres and rural settings such as village squares, carparks and forests. Unsuspecting audiences will see a luminous strawboy enter a location, before being joined by the rest of the cast to perform a noisy and colourful performance
which pays homage to the traditions and costumes of the Wren Boys. The Killarney Advertiser can confirm that 'The Strawboys' will perform in Killarney on July 17. However, the exact location is a closely guarded secret. “As it is a pop up performance we can’t confirm the location as the whole idea behind ‘The Strawboys’ is that the performance just suddenly starts and surprises people in outdoor locations,” said Heaslip. Heaslip works internationally as a dance artist, choreographer, dancer, movement director and dance teacher. Strawboys is the second work in his trilogy, exploring rituals of death, life and birth amongst the Gaels, the people on the north-western edge of Europe.
That is according to the latest June figures from the Central Statistics Office which were published this week. It shows an increase of 260 from the May figures. This is a staggering amount of people who are out of work in a relatively small area. It is even more shocking considering we are in the height of the tourist season and hotels and other hospitality sector businesses in Killarney keep telling us there are staff shortages throughout the industry. Some businesses have reduced their operating days and hours in reaction to staff shortages. The rising costs of fuel and child care means it is not financially viable for many people to go work. Wages earned are immediately dispersed to petrol stations and to pay a babysitter. The average cost of childcare in Kerry costs €180 per week, a tank of fuel is another €100.
Wages do not meet the cost of living further reducing the desire to go to work. The average weekly earnings of workers in the accommodation and food services sector is €400 according to Central Statistics Office figures issued in May. That leaves €120 for all other expenses. Under the Job Seekers scheme the full weekly payment is €208.00 without the need to pay for fuel and childcare. So some workers are financially better off, by €88.00 a week or €4576.00 a year, by staying at home. Rent prices and the general cost of housing (and lack of social housing) means the majority of people live in rural settings and are not in walking distance to available jobs. The lack of a public transport network adds to the cost of going to work. In simple terms, it seems that the 1,118 Killarney people that cannot find work (for whatever reason) paint a very grim picture of all that is wrong in the country. It is not their fault, it is the system’s fault.

Another successful Killarney races draws to a close Killarney Races summer festival drew bumper crowds to both on and off track activities | By Sean Moriarty One of the highlights of the week-long event was the arrival of several of the 2022 Rose of Tralee contestants and their Escorts. Wednesday’s evening meeting offered the ideal opportunity to meet and mingle with roses from all over the country and all across the globe in a fun and relaxed setting. Ciaran Wyrnn entertained on the lawn before and during racing, as Super Céilí got the crowd on their feet in the Jim Culloty Bar after racing. The Monday Club, widely regarded as a day of relaxation or leisure for those involved in the hospitality industry all across the Kingdom, and the team at
Killarney Races embraced this concept as their theme on the opening day of the festival. Family Fun Tuesday was a great evening for all the family which included an action-packed arts and crafts station to entertain junior racegoers. Thursday was a big day for race fans with seven national hunt races on the evening card. Friday is Dawn Milk Ladies Day when ten lucky ladies and gents will be selected by celebrity judges Anna Daly and Aidan O’Mahony. “There's always beautiful style in Killarney and for me it's about women who know what works for them rather than dressing for fashion's sake,” said Anna. “ I love to see a beautifully dressed woman enjoying herself and able to move in her stylish clothes and walk in her heels and I've no doubt there'll be plenty of those elegant ladies in Killarney this July.”

Ukrainians climb Carrauntoohil Ukrainians living in Killarney took on the challenge of climbing Carrauntoohil for the first time | By Natalya Krasnenkova “We have to see the edge, in which we are living now. We already know the parks and lakes, Ross castle, Muckross Park and Innisfallen island. Now we are discovering the mountains, ”says Valeria Mashkovska. The Ukrainians brought a flag with them to capture the moment. All the participants of the mini-expedition were surprised but full of impressions. The view from a height of 1038 metres was breath-taking.
“Carrauntoohil is my first mountain. I'm out of words,” said Ina Pashchenko. “Incredible emotions from primordial nature, stunning views and air as transparent and clean as the countless springs flowing into mountain lakes! “It's love at first sight and forever! “And our team was very friendly and supportive. I believe that Carrauntoohil is just the beginning and new heights of beautiful Ireland are waiting for us,” said Gandi Islamova.

Bucky the dog is looking for a new home! A 15 year old Ukrainian boy is looking for help in re-homing his dog Bucky. Herman always dreamed of owning a dog. When he arrived from Ukraine to Ireland he decided to realise his dream. He found a kennel that agreed to give him a dog. Unfortunately, Herman did not seek permission from his mother or the hotel where he lives. So for the past month, Herman and his new friend Bucky have been spending the whole day in the park, and the nights where they have to. Sometimes Herman and his dog spend the night with friends who are ready to shelter them for the night. But the dog is growing and needs a permanent home and constant training.
Now the dog Bucky is in a temporary animal shelter and if a new owner is not ready to shelter him, then the dog will simply be euthanized. Herman and his mother cry at the very thought of it. Bucky is 9 months old and is a Staffordshire Bull Terrier. He is an excellent companion dog that is very attached to its owner. You may have met the boy and his smiling dog on the streets of Killarney. These dogs, due to their small size, are able to live in any apartment or private house. However, he always needs walks two times a day. If you are looking for a companion dog and you are ready to take him into your home, as well as start training him, contact Herman's mom Svetlana, please on +353 (87) 975 3596.
ONE BOY AND HIS DOG: Herman, 15, urgently needs a new home for his dog Bucky.

GARDEN MAGIC
Gardening - By Debby Looney

The importance of watering in the morning during a heatwave Is it boring to start with a comment on the weather? Maybe, but hasn’t it been great?! Everyone is in a good mood, we’re getting jobs done, like painting the house and fence and we can go to the beach. However, it is also fantastic weather for blight, powdery mildew, blackspot, wilt, the list goes on. So what does the gardener need to do in this weather? Well, watering is an obvious job, but as with everything, there is a right way and a wrong way. All watering should preferably be done in the morning. The reasons for this are twofold, first of all, the plants get a chance to take up the water before the heat of the day, and secondly, the water can permeate to the roots before evaporating. There are those who say that water on the leaves will scorch them, but here the water will have evaporated before it gets a chance to focus the sunlight and cause scorching. Alternatively, if schedules don’t allow for morning watering, the evening is okay too. The problem with evening watering is that often leaves don’t get a chance to dry out and this leads to mildew and other fungi taking hold. Another thing to think about when it comes to watering is amount. It may sound obvious, but giving enough is crucial. Many people believe they are watering, when in fact all that is happening is
misting, or run-off. To be technical, peat based compost is hydrophobic, meaning it repels water. This is why ‘wetting agents’ are added to compost. Sand and topsoil mixed into compost have the same effect, in that they absorb water more easily. It takes a surprising amount of time and water before baskets and pots are saturated – the best way to water baskets is often to sit them in a bucket of water till they are wet through. Watering newly planted trees and shrubs is also very important, as their roots have not yet broken into the existing soil around them. The easiest way to ensure you give them enough is by using a bucket per plant. Lawns also suffer in these dry times. Make sure you water for long enough that the water filters down at least ten centimetres, and also that you don’t cut the grass as short as you normally might. Raise the blade by a notch. Potatoes are at risk of getting blight, so spray with a copper mixture to prevent this. If you have blight, cut the foliage back and burn it, or spray with something like Bayer’s Blight control. Your spuds will no longer be organic though. Roses are susceptible to blackspot and mildew during times of warm, humid weather, and the only answer to this is make sure your plants are strong and healthy. Give them plenty of feeding, preferably manure, and make sure they are not stressed. If they do get disease, Roseclear or fungus clear are really the only solution.

Kerry Agri shows to get funding lifeline
Fianna Fáil Councillor, Michael Cahill was welcomed Government funding of €700,000 to support the return of Agricultural Shows throughout the county. Minister for Rural and Community Development, Heather Humphreys TD, this week announced individual allocations of up to €6,000 to 119 Agricultural shows taking place this summer across the country. In total, €700,000 is being provided
to support the return of the shows over the coming months. Five different Kerry-based Agricultural Shows will benefit to the tune of between €5,000 to €6,000 based on vouched expenses. “I know that our own Glencar Cattle Show is hugely important to the people locally as are all the Agricultural Shows in Kerry and this funding will help to support the continuation of them following the interruption by COVID-19” said Councillor Cahill.

Two Mile School invites new KNOW YOUR RIGHTS pupils for 2022-23 school year Compensation for overbooked, Like all primary schools in Ireland, Two Mile Community National Scholl teaches the national Primary School Curriculum (NCCA, 1999). The school teaches English, Irish, Maths, History, Geography, Science, SPHE, PE, Visual Art, Drama and Music. "It is also a co-educational, multi-denominational primary school where religious and non-religious backgrounds are equally respected and explored. This ensures that each student’s individual identity is acknowledged socially and culturally while exploring the different values and traditions of the world in which they live today," said principal Catherine Barry. Parents who have chosen Two Mile Community National School have found it has an incredibly war and inclusive environment for their children, with high standards in education and excellent home/school communication. Children are happy going to school every day.
“The Two Mile Community National School offers an inclusive, diverse and child centred approach to education. We as parents and teachers ourselves are confident that our two children are thriving in this wonderful Community National School,” said Helene Selmi who has children attending the junior class. Two Mile Community National Scholl was established in 2017 under the patronage of Kerry Education and Training Board. It is the only primary school in the Killarney area offering a choice. Instead of a religious programme, the children follow ‘Goodness Me, Goodness You’, a multi-belief and values education curriculum. cancelled and delayed flights We are in the height of the holiday season and many people are flying abroad this year. It is important to be aware that air passengers have specific consumer rights under European law. You have a right to get assistance from your air carrier and you may be entitled to compensation in certain situations. These situations are: You are denied boarding against your will • Your flight is cancelled • Your flight is delayed • You are downgraded
WHO DOES THE LAW APPLY TO?
The law applies to all passengers departing from an EU/EEA airport. It also applies to passengers departing from an airport outside of the EU/EEA but arriving at an EU/EEA airport on an EU/ EEA licensed carrier (unless they have already received compensation or assistance in that non-EU/EEA country).
WHO DOES THE LAW NOT APPLY TO?
The law does not apply if you are travelling free of charge or at a fare that is reduced and is not available directly or indirectly to the public. Tickets purchased under frequent flyer programmes or similar commercial programmes are not considered reduced fare tickets. The law also does not apply if you do not have a confirmed reservation, relevant document (visa etc), you do not arrive at the boarding gate at good time or if you pose safety or security concerns.
WHAT HAPPENS IF I AM DENIED BOARDING AS THE FLIGHT WAS OVERBOOKED?
than there are seats on the aircraft. Where a flight is overbooked the airline will first call for volunteers to surrender their confirmed reservations to the airline in exchange for agreed benefits. The volunteers are also entitled to a choice of: • Refund of the cost of their ticket within 7 days if not wishing to travel or • Re-routing to their final destination at the earliest opportunity or • Re-routing at a later date at the passenger’s convenience, subject to availability of seats If there are not enough volunteers, the airline may deny boarding to passengers against their will but must compensate them and offer the appropriate assistance set out in the law. You must also be offered a choice of: Refund of the cost of your ticket within 7 days if not wishing to travel or Re-routing to your final destination at the earliest opportunity or Re-routing at a later date at your convenience, subject to availability of seats A refund is a full refund of the ticket for the part or parts of the journey you have not made and for the part or parts you have already made, if the flight is no longer serving any purpose to your original travel plan. When relevant, it also includes a return flight to your first point of departure at the earliest opportunity. If you choose a refund, compensation must also be paid. The amount you are entitled to depends on the distance of the flight that you have not been allowed to board. If you choose re-routing, the compensation that is paid depends on the length of delay past the original planned time in arriving at your final destination. If you choose to be re-routed as soon as possible then the air carrier must give you care and assistance whilst you are waiting on your alternative flight.
NOW ENROLLING: Past pupils and their parents have enjoyed positive experiences at Two Mile National Community School

A WEEKLY ROUND-UP OF NEWS • VIEWS FROM KERRY AND AROUND THE WORLD SUPPORT
KILLARNEY
INSPIRED BY DANNY CASEY
Tralee woman named Miss Kerry for 2022 Kasey McCormack (18) from Tralee will represent Kerry this year at the 75th Miss Ireland competition. The 37 finalists vying for the coveted Miss Ireland 2022 title were revealed last week for this, the 75th Diamond Jubilee of the competition. Kasey is 18 years old and currently living in Tralee. She has just completed her Leaving Cert and hopes to pursue a career in nursing with a view to specialise in eating disorders. Kasey’s hobbies include show jumping and she is keen fitness enthusiast. Kasey is very passionate about mental health issues and advocates for individualised care requirements. Selections have taken place all over the country to find a county winner who will represent their county at the most spectacular ever Diamond Jubilee Miss Ireland show on August 20 at the Royal Theatre Castlebar. As Miss Kerry, Kasey will attend various awards, openings and engagements in the county over the next year as well as
working on her various charity projects. Miss Ireland 2022 will follow in the footsteps of reigning Miss Ireland, Pamela Uba who captured the hearts of the nation with her incredible story and featured prominently in the Irish media and internationally on TV Shows in LA, London, Johannesburg and featured in the New York Times. Established in 1947, Miss Ireland has been the launch pad for many eminent, successful, and inspiring women in Ireland. In recent years the Miss Ireland Franchise has raised over €300,000 for various charities including Laura Lynn, Temple Street, Alzheimer’s Ireland, Pieta House, The Cari Foundation and this year are proud to partner, once again, with Variety Ireland, an Irish charity helping sick, disadvantaged and children with special needs since 1951.
grand plan within the Government is to reduce emissions from the agricultural sector by switching agricultural land to produce crops for anaerobic digestion or forestry and thus reducing available land for livestock production.”
No full-scale economic assessment has been conducted to ascertain the economic return for farmers that pertains from anaerobic digestion or long-term forestry given the challenges the sector faces currently,” added Mr Keane.
Government must come clean on plans to cut National Herd Macra na Feirme has called on the Government to come clean on the plans to cut the National Herd. Macra John Keane said: “Comments made by Minister Eamon Ryan on Tuesday suggest that farmers would be expected to reduce cow numbers to grow grass and other crops to supply anaerobic digestion plants.” The Minister was speaking in the context of reducing emissions from the agriculture sector and how agriculture can play
its part. Minister Eamon Ryan spoke about the role forestry can play in reducing emissions from agriculture and also the role that anaerobic digestion can play. Macra na Feirme’s understanding is that under the current carbon accounting model forestry is accounted for under the LULUCF sector while anaerobic digestion is accounted for under the energy sector, neither of which will be reflected in the agricultural sectors budget. “This can only mean one thing, that the

Volunteers wanted to clean-up Fenit beach Clean Coasts and Fáilte Ireland’s Wild Atlantic Way Community Clean-up group is inviting members of the public to help clean up Fenit beach on July 16. The meeting point for this event is the Lifeguard hut at Fenit Beach at 11:00am where volunteers will be welcomed by a Clean Coasts Officer and given a safety introduction before being offered Clean Coasts kit prior to your clean-up. Ireland is known for its magnificent coastlines, picturesque scenery, wildlife and exciting activities with a large majority of these landscapes located along the Wild Atlantic Way, Ireland's first defined touring route, stretching along the Atlantic coast from Donegal to West Cork. With the rise of staycations since 2020, more people are visiting Ireland’s west coast and enjoying the spectacular beaches. However, it is important that we remember to help protect and care for Ireland’s waterways, coastline, seas, ocean and marine life by ensuring they
are free of litter and educate ourselves on how best to do that. “The Irish coastline and its beaches are an important part of the visitor experience in Ireland. Outdoor water-based activities such as swimming, kayaking and surfing, are popular attractors for domestic and international tourists, and our stunning coastline, rivers and lakes are the bedrock upon which Irish tourism has been built,” said Shane Dineen, Fáilte Ireland Planning and Environment Manager As they are now being enjoyed more and more by local communities and visitors it is vital that we all play our part to keep our beaches clean so that they can be enjoyed for years to come. Local communities are at the heart of so many great visitor experiences in Ireland and the Clean Coasts groups are a prime example of this, custodians driven by local pride and a vision to protect and enhance our coastline which in turn offers visitors unique opportunities for connection, learning and enjoyment of our natural assets.”
Dogs Trust Ireland issues Safety Advice ahead of summer holidays Dogs Trust Ireland is reminding dog owners to keep our furry friends safe and happy as temperatures are set to soar over the summer months. With sunshine forecasted for the weeks ahead, the charity is urging owners not to take any risks where their dogs are concerned. Sadly, too many dog owners are still not aware of the dangers that hot weather poses for dogs. Dogs cannot cool themselves down the same way as humans do and so rely on us to keep them safe
in sunnier seasons. Dogs Trust is urging owners to heed the weather warning and be especially vigilant with young puppies, older dogs, overweight dogs or dogs with flatter faces as they are at an even higher risk of heatstroke. Common signs of heatstroke to watch out for include uncoordinated movements or collapse, altered or loss of consciousness, loss of vision, vomiting, diarrhoea, seizures, coma or bleeding. If heatstroke is suspected, seek veterinary attention immediately, the sooner this happens, the better chance the dog has of making a full recovery.
Irish artists celebrate new Ballybunion Arts Festival Blindboy, piper Louise Mulcahy, comedian Bernard Casey, RTE’s Aedín Ní Thiarnaigh and Irish language rapper Súil Amháin are just some of the top names that will draw crowds to a new event in the North Kerry seaside town of Ballybunion later this month. They all feature in the new Ballybunion Arts Festival, a brave new event which celebrates Irish artists with an impressive, eclectic line up of music, talks, art, theatre, workshops and comedy from 21st to 24th of July. The festival’s artistic director and organiser Katie O’Brien says the festival is about celebrating all types of art and artists that reflect Irish culture in their modern work. “We were especially interested in hosting artists creating work that engages nature and ecology with ancient and traditional Irish culture,” she says. “North Kerry has a dense population of multi-disciplinary arts from writing, tourism and film. But these are usually celebrated in silos in Kerry - never as a collective. “The Ballybunion Arts Festival brings all disciplines together through events
that allow us to soak up the art but also nourish and inspire creativity in artists in the iconic backdrop of this coastal town,” says Katie. The programme features many Irish language and bilingual events. “Ireland has a population of Irish speakers and so we wanted to advocate on behalf of and showcase artists working with the Irish language, with bilingual events with rap poet Súil Amháin, poet Máire Holmes, RTE’s Aedín Ní Thiarnaigh, IMLÉ, Róisín Seoighe and Manchán Magan.” As well as performances, exhibitions and talks, the programme features events to help artists and festival goers to unwind with beach yoga, sea swimming, nature talks and a whopping great 70-drum percussion circle on the beach. “Festivals can be full-on, so time in the outdoors is ideal – especially in beautiful Ballybunion. When you feel topped up and rested it’s easier to feel connected and inspired,” says Katie. “We started this festival in April 2020, as we wanted to support artists who were out of work because of the pandemic. It has now grown into a weekend to showcase artists while giving audiences enjoyment of arts events after the lockdowns
Niamh Curran Kelly, Veterinary and Welfare Manager, Dogs Trust Ireland, advises: "If you think your dog may be suffering from heatstroke, please do not delay in contacting a local vet. It is vital you do this as quickly as you can to give your dog the best chance of making a recovery. Move your dog to a cool, shaded area and dial the vet on speakerphone. Describe the symptoms your dog is experiencing and tell them that you think they may be suffering from heatstroke. While driving to the vet, drive with the windows down or air-conditioning on – this should help to reduce your dog’s core temperature. If you have to wait for transport to the vet, try to encourage your dog to drink small amounts of room-temperature water if they are alert, and gently pour
small amounts of cool water on their body. The main goal of treating heatstroke is to lower your dog’s body temperature to normal as early as possible, but not so quickly that you cause them to go into shock.”

Kelliher’s opts for a mix of youth and experience ahead of All Ireland final Kelliher’s Toyota Garage has gone for mix of new blood and experience after selecting its team for next Sunday’s All Ireland Football final The Kingdom’s Toyota dealership is an official sponsor of the Kerry County Board and they hope up inject passion and excitement into Kerry fans by going on a county-wide road trip next week. Leading the attack is the all new Yaris Cross. After making a successful debut at the semi-final last week, the Yaris Cross was a dead cert to be included in the team’s line-up for the final. Decked out in the team’s official colours of Green and Gold, the Yaris Cross dazzled onlookers with a top scoring performance in Dublin last Sunday. The Yaris Cross earned Car of the Match award after a colourful display along Dub-
lin’s O’Connell St that left many D-registered cars trailing in its wake. “This is Sam Maguire Gold,” said team manager Tim Kelliher in reference to the colourful player he has selected to lead Kerry to glory on Sunday week. Keen to build on the success of the Yaris Cross, a second one has been called in on off the bench and will join his twin brother in the squad. While Tim and his selectors are always keen to showcase Toyota’s latest talent, they never forget those who have made massive contributions to the team over the years. A classic Toyota Yaris, a key member of the 2001 campaign, has also been selected to do the business this week. Team Kelliher’s Toyota Road Show, in support of the Kerry team, will visit Killarney next Thursday in the run up to the big game on Sunday. They will call to the Killarney Advertiser’s office on High St (time to be confirmed) and everyone is welcome to meet the team ahead of the final.

Holiday Home Insurance - What you need to know If you own a holiday home in Ireland you will need specific holiday home insurance in place for your Buildings, Contents and Public Liability. The use of the property will impact on the quotes given, eg family use, seasonally let out, or let out using Air BnB. It should be noted that some underwriters do not accept Air BnB use. Here are some tips when buying Holiday Home Insurance including some cost saving tips. Buildings – Your Property should be insured for its rebuild cost not the market value. Rebuilding costs have increased substantially over the past 12 months. There is a handy rebuilding calculator on www.scsi.ie where you can calculate your own property. Under-insurance can have serious consequences in the
event of a claim so it is advisable to review annually and get professional advice from an Insurance expert. Contents – Remember an item of contents is something that would go with you if you moved house. For example a dining table is part of contents but a fitted kitchen is part of buildings. You should value your contents for replacement value. Review - Holiday home Insurance rates use many data streams so it is crucial to ensure that your details are correct when quoting. Important factors are your Eircode, seasonally let or family use, intruder and smoke alarms, year
of construction and flat roof details if applicable. Shopping around – When shopping around it is important to understand that direct insurers and banks will only sell their own products. They may not be able to offer you choice or advise you on your options. It is also worth noting that you are free to move your Insurance from your mortgage provider, we do this on a regular basis and succeed in securing large savings for these customers. Use a Broker – As experts in Home Insurance we understand the market conditions and can advise which Insurer or which product is most suitable for your specific needs. Aside from understanding the discounts than can be

Stricter rules for short term lets The government are looking to implement new stricter rules on the short term letting of non-principal private residences in rent pressure zones. Under new rules it will be an offence for property owners and short-term lettings websites such as Airbnb to advertise rentals that do not have the required planning permission under proposals agreed by the Government. Under the current rules, anyone looking to rent out a second home to the holiday market must apply for planning permission to do so. The new regulations would see both the property owners and the online platform fined for advertising properties that do not have the necessary planning permission. Minister for Housing Darragh O’Brien said the Cabinet had approved these
stronger regulatory controls which would result in more homes returning to the long-term rental market in rent pressure zones, where rents are highest and where households have the greatest difficulty finding affordable accommodation. If enacted, the changes to the law will mean that from September 1, online platforms will not be able to advertise properties in rent pressure zones that do not have the proper planning permission. Non-compliance with these provisions will be an offence for both the individual property owners concerned and the online platforms. It is understood the penalty for non-compliance will be a fine of €5,000 or six months in prison, or both. Fines of €1,500 per day would also apply if a property continues to be advertised after the initial conviction.
The proposed amendment is to the Planning and Development (Amendment) (No 2) Bill progressing through the Oireachtas, which is expected to be enacted before the summer recess. Announcing his plans, Mr O’Brien said the move would ease pressure on the rental market. “We know that significant numbers of properties have been withdrawn from the long-term rental market in recent years and diverted for use as short-term lettings, negatively impacting on the supply and availability of private residential rental accommodation with associated knock-on implications for rental prices,” he said. “This trend has been made easier through the use of online platforms and has been particularly acute in urban areas of high housing demand.” He said the new controls are to be in place for six months initially while

Fat dissolving injections It may sound too good to be true but they are as effective as the name suggest. They are administered by our in-house Dr. Michael Flynn. He has been attending our salon for the past 10 years. It is the double chin and neck area that is treated. It is suitable for both men and women. If you haven't heard of fat dissolving, it is a very popular and relatively new treatment that is used to target stubborn pockets of fat on the jaw lone and chin area. The injection dissolves and eliminates fat cells in a safe and effective way, making it the perfect for dealing with stubborn fat that simply won't budge with exercise. The main ingredient is a fat dissolving substance sodium deoxycholate, which is found naturally in the body. This is injected into the treatment area, which over time will destroy the fat
cells in this area. These are then removed from the body by its own lymphatic system. The Lymphatic system is a complex network, that rids the body of unwanted toxins and waste. It is important to understand that fat dissolving injections are not weight loss treatment. The injections should only be used on people who are healthy size or carrying s little extra weight. Its most effective on the pockets of fat stored under the jaw line, known as the double chin. This is a migration of fat cells from the cheeks to the jaw line. The injections work at a slow pace, it can take serval weeks for fully results. But once it's gone, its gone. The results are permanent, once you don't gain a massive amount of weight. Our next clinic will on August 29, to book an appointment or more information, call Jill 064-6632966.

Lughnasadh- Milltown Festival from July 28 to 31
The best in trad will return to Milltown this July, the mid-Kerry town once again providing a feast of traditional music and culture over a four-day event. Sharon Shannon will headline the event, playing on the gig rig in the square on Saturday, July 30th. Friday night will feature local Kerry sensation ‘The Rising’, and Sunday night will see internationally renowned ‘Jiggy’. Acts will be supported each night by local musicians, so the festival will showcase the best of trad, locally, nationally and internationally. All performances are free and open air. The festival theme is the ancient Lughnasadh celebration, a traditional Celtic event to mark the beginning of the harvest, showing gratitude to the gods for the early fruits and invoking help for a good crop in the coming weeks with grain and roots. The god Lugh and goddess Tailtiu are the providers and guardians in Celtic lore and a parade will see local children recreate these ancient celebrations. The festival programme begins with the parade on Thursday, July 28th, followed by drumming with Urs Wenk and Celtic lore from Helen O'Sullivan. This will be followed by the perennial favourite, Club Amhráníochta Lughnasadh, the singing club, taking place in Milltown Community Hall. Singers are invited to come and take
part in the open-mic event. Friday night will feature local musicians on the gig rig, followed by Kerry’s finest, ‘The Rising’, a quartet guaranteed to have the crowd buzzing with their unique and powerful blend of trad tunes. The Community Hall will host local talent in an open music session afterwards, ‘Club Lughnasadh’. Saturday night will see the world-renowned Sharon Shannon showcase her mercurial talents with her band on the gig rig at 9 pm. This will be a unique opportunity to see Sharon open air and promises to be a memorable event. Sunday will be a full day of activities for all the family, with a craft fair presenting the best in local artisan foods, along with kids’ activities with ‘Party Time’ and storytelling with ‘The Crafty Cailleach’. The ever-popular Uí Briain will play for the Open Air Céili from 4 to 7, with sets on the dancing platform. Performances from Kerry Comhaltas branches will link the evening with ‘Jiggy’, giving their exotic flavour of world rhythms and cutting-edge dance grooves to the deep roots of trad. Each night will feature open music sessions until late in the Community Hall. Musicians will be welcome in the Milltown bars all weekend, so bring the instruments and you’d never know who you’ll meet.

Beating the Dubs is sweet but we're not there yet Kerry must come back down to earth if they are to overcome a dangerous Galway team in the final, writes Adam Moynihan I don’t know about you but I floated up the Jones’ Road on Sunday evening. In all my time going to Kerry matches, I honestly never left a ground happier. Winning such a high-stakes game against such a great team in such a spectacular way… It was nothing short of euphoric. Defeat the last day was unthinkable for many reasons, chief amongst them the worry that it would set this group of players back immeasurably. But the way Dublin came at Kerry in the last 15 minutes meant it was hard to think of anything else. The blue wave was rolling in. That sick feeling in the gut, a silencing sensation of helplessness mixed with dread, set in and made itself at home. The match was only going one way. Even when David Clifford won the free 54 metres out from goal, it was hard to see how it would help us. It was too far out. Into the wind with 76 minutes of hard running in the legs? Jack O’Connor said he was mentally preparing for extra time. I think a lot of Kerry supporters were mentally preparing for a long train journey home and six long months back in their collective box. Momentum was with Dublin. ET would have been a big ask. Set against that backdrop, Seán O’Shea’s kick was beyond perfect. It was not of this world. Any words I use to describe it will fall pitifully short. Up high in the press box in the Hogan Stand, where county colours are not allowed and a degree of neutrality is expected, I jumped to my feet and almost roared my head clean off my
shoulders. The ecstasy in the crowd and back home mirrored what we saw on the pitch as the players leapt high and landed on one another, arms and legs and screams flying in all directions. Jason Foley sprinted around 25 yards towards the Hogan side, took flight, and punched the air. Others wheeled off on their own tracks, overcome with elation. When you take into account everything they’ve been through in the past three or four years, namely the sharp criticism they faced following yearly heartbreaking losses, you have to feel so, so happy for the players. They were magnificent and they are fully deserving of every ounce of praise they get this week. But they’re not there yet. Not where we want them to be. And certainly not where they want to be themselves. “It’s an ecstatic dressing room at the moment but we’ll have to get the boys down to level ground,” their manager said afterwards. “We have to convince them that this job is far from done.” The lads on the panel aren’t the only ones who need convincing. It might have felt like we won an All-Ireland last Sunday but we all have to remember that Galway are a good team and will take some beating. It’s not something we’re noted for around these parts but we all need to keep the feet firmly on the ground. If they heed their manager’s words, I’d have massive faith in this Kerry team to get over the line. Then Iarnród Éireann can cancel the special train home. We’ll all float down to Kerry together.

Brave Kerry down Dubs thanks to ‘unkickable’ Seánie Shea free Adam Moynihan reports from Croke Park ALL-IRELAND SFC SEMI-FINAL _______________________________________________________ Kerry 1-14 | Dublin 1-13 CROKE PARK
Speaking to the media after the game, Jack O’Connor admitted that he didn’t think it was kickable. 77 minutes on the clock. Draw game. 54 metres out. A place in the All-Ireland final on the line. Deafening noise from Hill 16. A stiff wind coming the wrong way. A decade of Dublin dominance hanging in the air. Seán O’Shea, who had fluffed a penalty in the first half, stands upright, draws one last deliberate intake of breath, strides, and strikes. It wasn’t kickable. Until it was. O’Shea’s point – the final, killer blow in what was an absorbing slugfest – will surely go down as one of the greatest acts of individual brilliance in the history of Kerry football. Joyous scenes followed the final whistle as Kerry booked a spot in the All-Ireland final, where they will face Galway. That’s two weeks down the road. For now, players, management and supporters can bask in one of the county’s most famous wins.
ATMOSPHERE
As the match began, the atmosphere
inside a sun-soaked Croke Park was spine-tingling. Due to a combination of Covid and premature championship exits, both sets of fans had been waiting for a big Dublin-Kerry match like this since 2019. Certainly in terms of drama, this battle did not disappoint. Dublin corner back Lee Gannon kicked the first score of the game into the Hill and into a strong breeze, but the Sky Blues quickly found themselves chasing the game. Seán O’Shea equalised within seconds of Gannon’s opener and Kerry fans really found their voice in the fourth minute when O’Shea latched on to David Moran’s long ball before dispatching a cool finish beyond the reach of Evan Comerford. Dean Rock (free) and Brian Howard replied for the Dubs and then Kerry scored three on bounce. David Clifford (free), Tom O’Sullivan and Clifford again pushed the lead out to four in the 12th minute. That gap was cut to three by John Small before Clifford grabbed the spotlight once again with two superb scores. The first came from a mark after a great catch and the second was a thing of beauty from long range. While he was shaping up to kick the latter shot, John Small was dragging Paul
Geaney down off the ball, an incident which resulted in a black card. Rock and O’Shea exchanged scores and then O’Shea missed a golden opportunity in the 31st minute when his tame penalty was saved by Comerford. The Kerry centre forward lashed at the rebound from close range but Comerford saved again, and a scuffle broke out as the Dubs accused O’Shea of dangerous play. Tempers cooled and Comerford recovered, and the Munster champions finished the half in the ascendency as David Clifford fired over a brilliant individual point. Kerry led by five at the break. Half the job done, and no more.
SPARKED
Kerry appeared to be handling the game well in the early stages of the second half but a fabulous goal by Cormac Costello in the 45th minute sparked the home team into life. Ciarán Kilkenny fisted over a point to make it a one-point game shortly after. Man of the Match Paudie Clifford tagged on two crucial scores to help hold back the wave but three straight points by Kilkenny, James McCarthy, and Kilkenny again drew Dublin level with a minute of normal time to play. Croker was rocking at this point and the nerves of Kerry supporters were jangling, but in the 73rd minute O’Shea engineered a Kerry free near the goal which he then converted to put Kerry
ahead. Dean Rock equalised with a free of his own two minutes later and the game appeared to be heading for extra time until David Clifford was fouled way out from the posts. Goalkeeper Shane Ryan came forward to offer his services but O’Shea waved him away. He didn’t want a way out. He was the man for the job. The man to secure Kerry’s first win over Dublin in 13 years. The man to kick the unkickable free. Brave in possession when it mattered most. The team’s unsung hero.
Adam Moynihan was in Croke Park to record the musings of a very happy Jack O’Connor following Kerry’s win over Dublin
Kerry stood up to the challenge posed by Dublin down the stretch
I think the absolute key to it was that in the last 10 minutes, when Dublin were pressing, Shane Ryan got off all his kickouts. If they turned over one of those kickouts, I think we were done. O’Connor praised the efforts of goalkeeper Shane Ryan.
Of course it’s significant psychologically but Mayo were in this exact same position last year… You have to go the distance. That will be big incentive for us over the next two weeks, to try and finish the job. Kerry still have work to do, the experienced bainisteoir warned
This craic that you can lie down and waste three minutes off a black card. That’s ridiculous. I mean, to what degree can you exploit that? Jack wasn’t best pleased with antics of Dublin keeper Evan Comerford
Galway are a very good footballing side with one of the top full forward lines in the country. Comer is a seriously dangerous operator. O’Connor believes the final on Sunday week will be another major test

Kerry finally get the monkey off their back RELIEF: David Clifford celebrates his side's long-awaited victory over Dublin. Photo: Ramsey Cardy/Sportsfile.
After many years of tough defeats to Dublin, Kerry finally got the result they so badly wanted | By Éamonn Fitzgerald Is he lucky? Yes. Is he a good team manager? Yes. Is he a winner? Yes. Will Jack O’Connor be a winner in 10 days time? Fan tamaillín. Readers of this column will have to wait until this day week for my prediction of the outcome of the 2022 All-Ireland SFC. Will it go west of the Shannon or back home to Kerry? Sin í an cheist. It all hung on the balance at a breezy and sunny Croke Park on Sunday last with Kerry and Dublin tied on 1-13 each at the end of five minutes of time added on. It looked odds-on that the age-old rivalry would be resolved in extra-time and quite probably a penalty shootout. If that materialised, the odds favoured the resurgent Dubs who had clawed back a six-point deficit. The comeback was orchestrated by the wily, seasoned James McCarthy and Ciarán Kilkenny. An attendance of 73,602 waited and wondered. The Clifford brothers and Seánie O'Shea were out on their feet after scoring 1-10 of the 1-14, but they were asked to deliver one more coup-degrace. Do or die. Jim Deenihan rose from his seat on the Hogan Stand as David Clifford engineered a foul well out beyond the Dublin 45. He knew very well what was at stake having captained Kerry to lift the Sam Maguire. He also suffered the heartbreak of defeat at the death. There were many bad dreams but the nightmare of 1982 was the most galling of all and still sticks in the craw of Kerry supporters worldwide. “What a free and so far out, well outside the 45,” Deenihan said to me after the game. “Kicking into a strong gale that led even the best of forwards to drag their shots wide. What’s more it was into the Hill, packed with diehard Dublin supporters. That is pressure. Score it and you are the hero; funk it, miss it like you missed the
penalty in the first half and the critics will have a field day. Impossible, but didn't Seánie nail it, Éamonn.” The next time the Kenmare hero plays the 1st in Killeen he will know how to maximise his scorecard. How many golfers would die for that controlled draw that tricked the Hillsiders staring into the glare of the afternoon sun? Seánie boomed it out well outside the posts on the Cusack side and the Dubs began to cheer loudly. I can imagine the wink and elbow language of the True Blues, the dancing and the shuffle. “We're on the road to Sam once more, singing cockles and mussels, alive, alive oh… Oh no, the bleeding ball is drifting in and in…” All Evan Comerford could do was to wrap his hands around the goalpost and try in vain to narrow the landing area for the mighty kick. Obair in aisce. Shades of Paddy Cullen and his despairing efforts to prevent Mikey Sheehy's goal. The Kerry captain on the field became Captain Fantastic and that last minute winner did much to exorcise the late feat of Stephen Cluxton in 2011.
GIVING IT AWAY
It should never have come to that, of course. The same Seánie O'Shea who did so well to set Kerry on the road to victory with a splendid early goal should have put a possible Dublin revival out of the question. Instead, it was a poorly taken penalty, especially by his high standards. Credit it Evan Comerford for the save, using his hands and feet to stop the shot. In last week's issue I wrote that both teams need to score a goal and most likely two goals to win. I also singled out Cormac Costello as the real danger because he is a great goal-snatcher. Like so many others, the swirling wind pulled two of his attempts wide. However, all a cute forward needs is half a chance to light up his day. It came in the unlikeliest way due to
59
16.07.2022 sloppy mishandling by Kerry. David Moran gave away possession and Dublin attacked. The Kerry defence attempted to do what it did so successfully all day: batten up the hatches and close up the middle. I had a perfect view of the build-up and immediately sensed the danger. Costello was outside the Kerry barrier and had no chance of getting through. However, the inevitable happened as the Kerry defence, still intact, was pulled over ever so slightly to the Cusack side. All Costello needed was this chink of opportunity and the execution was class. He pulled the trigger early and just got the ball in low inside the post. 45th minute. Game on. No blame whatsoever to Shane Ryan. The Rathmore clubman had a fine game. Billy Morgan was a splendid goalkeeper but he always admitted that the most difficult shot he tried to save was low and hard, one foot off the ground. If it was just inside the neither post, God nor man wouldn't save it. By the way that, was the only fallibility that Billy admitted to. The impetus was with Dublin, but Kerry responded and reacted as we hoped they would. They rode their luck but where would you be without it.
MONKEY
The monkey is now off Kerry’s back after defeats to Dublin in 2011, 2013, 2015, 2016 and 2019. Last Sunday’s victory was vital to get rid of that annoying monkey. Job done, but the wider project will not be completed until Sunday week. Hope springs eternal. This was the ideal result for Kerry and Jack O’Connor will play down the worth of this team. This is not a great Kerry team - yet. The potential is there but they nearly left it after them. Grit, David Clifford, Seánie O’Shea, a well disciplined defence and Lady Luck smiled on their brinkmanship before referee Paddy Neilan blew that relieving whistle. The one downside for Kerry was the knee injury to Gavin White. He is a real doubt for the final. There were plenty of ‘what ifs’ the last day. What if Con O’Callaghan had been playing? Dublin would have won, in my opinion. What if the referee had deemed Seánie O’Shea’s follow through after Comerford saved the penalty as dangerous play and issued a red card? The result of the game would have been different. What if Dublin had scored that early goal opportuni-
ty that was superbly saved by Shane Ryan? Would it have opened the floodgates for Dublin to dominate? What if Kerry hadn’t given away so much possession through sloppy passing? They would have been out the gap much earlier. David Moran did very well overall but was the chief culprit in this element of giving away possession. Jack needs to work on that for the final. What if Stephen O’Brien had not picked the ball off the ground when David Clifford sent him a brilliant pass across the goalmouth? A goal would have followed. I thought Stephen O’Brien had a poor game, as did Paul Geaney. I felt the selectors were too slow to substitute them. Dara Moynihan did well, but the two Spillanes contributed little and there were better options on the bench. My Man of the Match candidates were confined to Seánie O’Shea and the Clifford brothers. It was hard to separate them for their scoring feats, but my choice is Seánie on the basis that it takes something special to face up to the toughest free kick in his life after messing up the penalty. Cometh the hour, cometh the man and on Sunday last he became a superman.

KERRY LADIES
Kerry booked their place in tomorrow’s All-Ireland ladies semi-final at Croke Park v Mayo and a win here would launch them into the All-Ireland final on July 31. Meath will play Donegal in the other semi-final. Top hitters Dublin and Cork are out of the race. Kerry were magnificent in Tullamore proving much too good for Armagh, 4-12 to 2-14. Top scorer? Who else but veteran Louise Ní Mhuircheartaigh who scored 2-6. Best of luck to Mná na Ríochta tomorrow. TG4 will cover the semi-finals live.
KILKENNY FOOTBALLERS
It was special to see the Kilkenny team celebrate their first ever All-Ireland Junior Football Championship following two goals in stoppage time. They secured a 3-12 to 1-9 win over New York. It’s over to Cody and the hurlers now on Sunday to make it a Kilkenny double. Will they? I expect a big effort but Kiely will have a plan to curb TJ Reid, minimising fouling within 100 yards of their goal line. I expect Limerick to retain their title with quite a bit to spare.

Dr Crokes GAA CO. LEAGUE DIV. 1: Dr Crokes 5-15 Kenmare Shamrocks 1-4. On Saturday evening we travelled to Kenmare for a one sided affair. Billy Courtney got our scoring underway in the first minute of the game with a point from play. It wasn’t until the 8th minute that Kenmare opened their scoring. Daithi Casey converted a penalty 8 minutes before the half time whistle, helping to give us a 1-7 to 0-2 lead at the break. We came out even stronger in the second half, with goals from Mikey Casey, Michael Potts and Brian Looney. As we have finished on top of the table along with Austin Stacks and Dingle, there will be a threeway playoff. The first play-off game will take place next Saturday evening. CO. LEAGUE DIV. 3: Dr Crokes 0-5 Piarsaigh Na Dromoda 2-15. Our second team went down to a stronger Piarsaigh Na Dromoda team at home on Saturday last. We got off to a slow start in very hot conditions. Unfortunately, we never looked like winning the game but the boys worked hard throughout and never gave up. SHC: Dr Crokes 1-12 Kilmoyley 3-25. Despite the margin on the scoreboard, this game was by no means a one-sided contest. We got off to a good start despite two first half goals from Kilmoyley. In the 27th minute Jack Lenihan found the back of the net after a Mark Heffernan long range free dropped into the square putting us two points ahead at the half time whistle. Kilmoyley came out like a new team in the second half, scoring 3 points in the first 70 seconds of play. It was always going to be a tough battle, particularly when we were missing a number of our key men.
Fossa GAA A NIGHT WITH LEGENDS: Many thanks to Celtic Steps, Bernard Casey, Tim Moynihan, all the legends on the night and of course everyone who helped and attend our Fundraiser - A Night with Legends last Tuesday. COUNTY LEAGUE: Division 3 Round 11. Glenflesk 2–12 Ballydonoghue 0–15. After an hour of engrossing football, Glenflesk completed the perfect season in Division 3 of the County League, overcoming Ballydonoghue’s fierce comeback, as they tried desperately to keep their promotion hopes alive. Afterwards Captain Daniel O’Brien accepted the Division 3 Shield on behalf of his delighted team. A wonderful achievement for the Club who had to overcome all types of situations across the eleven games. They did that with both grit and style, and can look forward to the rest of the year with confidence extremely high. Congratulations to all involved in this special achievement. COUNTY LEAGUE: Desmonds 2-12 Kilcummin 1-11. A goal straight from the start of the second half by Desmonds put them in the driving seat and although we tried manfully to recover from a six- point deficit we lost out on our opportunity to be Div 2 champions. Kevin McCarthy played his last game before emigrating and we wish him and Rachel all the best in the future. While this loss is a disappointment for team, mentors and supporters alike we mustn't forget the huge efforts they made to secure promotion to Div 1 and only missing the title by a single point. Congratulations to Castleisland Desmonds.
