The Grand reopens with some brand new features

The public restrooms now feature fresh air filtered through a brand new climate control technology, influenced by the pandemic in an effort to keep guests safe from potential viruses. “We believe we are the first pub in Kerry to do this,” said owner Patsy Sheehan. Another notable change is Patsy’s late father Paddy Sheehan’s name etched on the building’s shopfront.

The décor may have changed, but it is the same familiar faces who continue to run the show. During The Grand’s soft re-opening on Wednesday night the first person guests met was doorman Shane Manning. “It was anything but a soft opening,” added Patsy in reference to how busy it was. “Regular customers were hugging Shane, they were so delighted to see him back. We had an elderly woman in her 80s, and her daughter come down from County Clare – huge fans of traditional music and regulars here in the past.” Long-serving staff member Cathriona Flynn from Faha is back behind the bar her 27th year as an employee of the bar. “The new bar is lovely, it is so up to date,” she said. “I am looking forward to meeting old faces and making new friends. And that is the thing, The Grand is one big family. This is a new chapter in The Grand and the biggest change I have seen here.” Manager Mags Walsh is also making a welcome return to the bar’s team. “The Grand is an institution, everyone loves The Grand,” she said. It was all hands on deck to get the bar open in time for the Easter weekend. Patsy’s brother-in-law Dan Dowling, the Lisselton man who owns the legendary London bar The Swan in Stockwell was there to offer his help and advice after years of running one of the busiest Irish clubs in the British capital. Comic Bernard Casey has given The Grand the ‘Gossip and Nephew’ treatment with a special promotional video on social media. There are also plans in place to renovate the upstairs bedrooms but that is on the long finger for now as Patsy and his team concentrate on getting the pub back up and running.

for Killarney and that has not changed. “The fixture was made in March and there is no update on that,” a Munster Council official told the Killarney Advertiser. “There are on going discussions in the background, ideally we need to make the decision, and the sooner the better

as we need to make arrangements for the teams but as it stands there is no update.” Kerry GAA officials will not get drawn into the debate. Two different Kerry County Board officials told the Killarney Advertiser that “the decision is for the Munster Council”.

After 760 days of closure The Grand - a much-loved favourite haunt for locals and visitors - is finally back in business. | By Sean Moriarty Killarney’s top music venue reopened on Wednesday night. The pub/nightclub closed on March 14 2020 – one of the first pubs to pull the plug a week before Coronavirus took hold of the world – and since last August owner Patsy Sheehan and his team have been busy refurbishing the popular late night venue. Punters will instantly recognise the layout of the main bar but dozens of framed photos of Irish musicians now adorn the walls. The positioning of these photos reflect what is happening in the bar. The walls of the front bar are decorated with pictures of some the region’s best loved trad-musicians and this is where the nightly Irish music sessions take place. Further in guests will admire photos of Irish rockers like The Edge, Hozier and Sinéad O’Connor placed along walls in front of the main stage. And music is always a central theme in The Grand. New for the 2022 season is a house band with a difference. Local musicians will be joined by better-known figures who happen to be in town for other reasons.

GRAND RE-OPENING: Brothers-in-law and publicans Patsy Sheehan and Dan Dowling have re-opened The Grand after 760 days of closure. Photo: Michelle Crean

“One night we could have Mike Denver playing with the house band, the next night it could be Daniel O’Donnell’s lead guitarist,” The Grand’s entertainment manager Matt Griffin, a Kilburn-born Irish musician with South Kerry roots, told the Killarney Advertiser. “We are the only venue outside of Dublin to offer music seven nights a week.” Upstairs the legendary piano bar remains untouched, downstairs there are further plans to upgrade the nightclub. Here partygoers will see the biggest change. A new underground tunnel links

each side of the dance floor where they will find a new cloakroom and four stateof-the-art toilets.

FRESH AIR INDOORS

Kerry Cork match remains fixed for Killarney | By Sean Moriarty The Kerry v Cork game remains fixed for Fitzgerald Stadium despite the Munster Council admitting there are “ongoing discussions going on in the background”. Last month the Munster Council announced that the May 7 match will be played at Fitzgerald Stadium. The game was originally scheduled for Páirc Uí Rinn as Páirc Uí Chaoimh is unavailable due to an Ed Sheeran concert at the venue. The Kerry and Cork County Boards have a long-standing agreement where home

and away matches are played on alternate years. However, the Munster Council deemed Páirc Uí Rinn too small to host such a prestigious game and elected to transfer the fixture to Killarney allowing the local pitch two successive games. Since the announcement the Cork team and management has steadfastly refused to play the game in Killarney and have threatened to grant Kerry a walkover if the match is played anywhere but Páirc Uí Rinn. With the game three weeks away, fans and teams need to start their final preparations. As it stands officially, the game is fixed

Insurance firm to expand workforce after €100m sale | By Sean Moriarty A Killarney insurance company recently bought out for €100m, plans to expand its workforce from 85 to 250 following the sale.

Rhododendron control set back by 40 years after wildfires

Gallivan Murphy Insurance Brokers Limited (GMIB) has been acquired by a US headquartered underwriting firm and will continue to trade from its Rock Road premises. Founded in 1989, GMIB operates nationally, under the leadership of joint Managing Directors, Simon Gallivan and Denis Murphy. Both Gallivan and Murphy and Director Tadgh Gallivan will continue in the business. AssuredPartners, founded in 2011, has acquired in excess of 400 agencies, and has offices in five countries, 35 States in the US and has circa 8,500 employees

making it one of the largest independently owned brokers in the world. “We are truly proud and excited to be teaming up with a Global Insurance Broker with over 8,500 employees, AssuredPartners. This is a watershed moment in the insurance industry in Ireland as a global insurance giant like AssuredPartners has chosen Killarney as their location to enter the Irish insurance market and be a hub for future growth in Ireland,” Denis Murphy, Joint Managing Director, said. “It is testament and a reflection of our tremendous talented team and an exciting time for the continued growth in staff numbers from 85 to in excess of 250 in the next three to five years. This is a very positive development, with the scale of AssuredPartners, for all our existing and new clients of GMIB who will continue to receive excellent customer service and competitive insurance premiums."

Last year’s wildfires in Killarney National Park have set back rhododendron control by 40 years. | By Sean Moriarty Killarney Mountain Meitheal is preparing to tackle the regrowth of rhododendron in the National Park following last April’s devastating wild fires. Over 300 hectares of natural habitat were damaged and the burnt scrubland is an ideal breeding ground for the highly evasive plant. Meitheal volunteers will work to halt the re-growth in areas like Dinis Island, Old Weir Bridge and surrounding woodland. They hope to get crews in there by late April or early May to manage and eradicate the emerging regrowth in these areas. As well as being highly invasive, rhodo-

dendron ponticum is also fire resistant as the roots of the plant remain intact after a fire and will quickly reproduce. “Areas around Dinis Island and Old Weir Bridge were clear of rhododendron since the 1980s,” former Park Ranger and Meitheal volunteer, Peter O’Toole, told the Killarney Advertiser. “Fire creates the perfect environment for aggressive rhododendron re-growth." Killarney Mountain Meitheal meet every Tuesday and Sunday morning to tackle various issues in the National Park. They work in close cooperation with Killarney National Park management and are supported by the Trustees of Muckross House.

Park rangers to use technology to identify fire hazards | By Sean Moriarty Thermal imaging and drones are to be used in an effort to identify the fire risks in the National Park.

The one-year anniversary of the devastating fire that destroyed 3,000 hectares in the park last April is just one week away. Forest fires are common in upland areas at this time of the year but last year’s fires caused more damage than any other fire in recent history. “The National Parks and Wildlife Service (NPWS) wishes to remind visitors of the

catastrophic impact of lighting fires. In April 2021, a fire ripped through the UNESCO biosphere reserve, resulting in it being destroyed. Complex ecosystems that took hundreds of years to evolve and wildlife destroyed,” said a NPWS statement. “Habitats including wet heath, ancient oak woodlands, blanket bog dating back to Neolithic times, lakes and waterways were impacted. The NPWS is urging more vigilance and heightened public awareness about the dangers of using naked flames outdoors, the need to protect this national resource is paramount.”

Giving to others is what one business owner does best and this week was no different as a substantial donation was given to local Ukrainians. | By Michelle Crean Jana Lalikova from the Czech Republic owns Perfect Therapy rehabilitation and physiotherapy practice at the Reeks and has fundraised for other causes over the past few years. She felt such helplessness when news of the invasion of Ukraine by Russian forces broke and she and her staff were keen to do something to help. Using their skills, they immediately arranged massage sessions with donations to go towards helping raise money to help those displaced by the war. Two days were organised for the fundraiser, Saturday March 12 and 19, with each individual massage costing €30 for 30 minutes and in total €1,775 was raised. "We wanted to do something to help," Jana told the Killarney Advertiser.

"The community is brilliant. Most of them paid more than €30 and there were people that didn't receive a massage and made a donation. I'd like to say thank you to the people who were amazing in how they supported this." Initially Jana thought they'd donate the funds to the Red Cross Ukrainian Appeal but they have now decided to give the money to the refugees who have recently arrived in to Killarney town. "We were sure at the start that we would give it to the Red Cross and we sat down and decided it would be better to help locally for the people who have arrived here. We decided to buy vouchers for Dunnes Stores and One4all as there are a lot of shops in town who take these vouchers. It's like a circle that the money is staying here too."

Jessie wins Best Actress at Olivier Awards | By Michelle Crean Local actress Jessie Buckley - who is making a huge name for herself across the water - has added another feather to her bow after winning Best Actress in a Musical at the Olivier Awards. The awards night, in London's Royal Albert Hall on Sunday night, recognises excellence in professional theatre. Jessie, who was nominated for an Oscar for her role as supporting actress in 'The Lost Daughter', played Sally Bowles in the West End musical 'Cabaret' at the Playhouse Theatre London. Eddie Redmayne, who starred alongside her, won Best Actor in a Musical in the reinvented 1966 Kander & Ebb classic and said he wouldn't have taken on the role without Jessie agreeing to be his co-star. 'Caberet' was also named 'Best Musical Revival' and secured many other plau-

Pat, originally from Minish, and Alice (Kiernan), originally from Ballinamuck, Co. Longford, were married on April 4, 1970.

Friday was special as it was a big family celebration with their five children Thomas, Michael, Paul, Gillian and Maria, daughters-in-law Noreen and Breeda, sons-in-law Anthony and Alex, and their beloved grandchildren Alan, Sarah, Cian, Roisin, Jess, Oisin, Tom and Mila. They began with a Mass with Fr Kieran O'Brien followed by a meal and continued the celebrations at home. “It was fantastic to all be together again especially after a difficult two years with COVID," their daughter Gillian told the Killarney Advertiser. "We really appreciated being able to celebrate such a momentous occasion for our parents.”

Happy Easter to all!

Jane's project a first in Ireland

A Killarney student was one of a group of trainee teachers at Mary Immaculate College to set up the very first outdoor education classroom in a third level college. | By Sean Moriarty

Jane McGillicuddy, from Kilcummin, is in her fourth and final year at the Limerick College. Her speciality subject is geography and she and her fellow students, with support from the teaching staff at the college, founded An Choill Bheag (The Small Forest) on the grounds of the college. The new project will serve as an outdoor classroom for future students at the college and prepare them to teach all aspects of geography, nature and environmental studies. It was supported by Learning About Forests (LEAF) which is an international programme operated in Ireland by the outdoor Education Unit of An Taisce. Earlier this week, LEAF Ireland planted almost one hundred native trees with students and staff from Mary Immaculate

College and this woodland habitat will provide an on-site educational and recreational resource for the whole college community. “This will be there for years to come,” Jane, a former student at both Holy Cross Mercy National School and St Brigid’s Secondary School, told the Killarney Advertiser. “It will promote outdoor learning. Our teachers managed the whole project but we did all the physical work like preparing the ground, marking out the area and planting the trees.” As part of the Choill Bheag project student teachers have attended forest-based workshops in Coillte Curraghchase Forest Park, where they were shown a variety of different ways that the outdoors can be used to educate children in all curricular areas.

The Brehon strikes Gold! The celebrations continue at The Brehon this week with the news that it has been awarded another prestigious accolade.

The team at the hotel received gold at The Irish Accommodation Service Institute Awards last weekend in Dublin. The Irish Accommodation Services (IASI) awarded The Brehon for their

immaculate standards in housekeeping and accommodation services led by Accommodation Manager, Liz O’Sullivan. “We are thrilled to have won the IASI gold medal," Liz said. "Our guests expect and deserve the highest standards of cleanliness and our teams work very hard every day to ensure that this is what they get. To be applauded for this is a fabulous bonus.”

Busy season ahead for Killarney Racecourse Ukrainian model Mariam Diasamidze and Killarney’s own Aisling O’Sullivan joined forces with jockey Gary Noonan and the noble steed Landue, to mark the launch of the 2022 Killarney Racing Calendar in the Kingdom. Preparations are well underway at the Kerry track for their busy racing season which is set to kick off next month. With no less than four festivals to choose from, between May and October, there is something for everyone at Ireland’s most scenic racecourse. “The team here have never been more excited to welcome crowds to Killarney Racecourse this season," Chairman of Killarney Racecourse, Ger Coughlan, said. "The pandemic really had an impact on our business and although racing took place, it’s just not the same here without seeing packed stands and crowds enjoying all the fun and frolics of the festival that are synonymous with racing here at Killarney Races. Many of those coming to the festivals this year will not have been with us for two years and for others it will be their first time. It’s important to note that we’ve been busy working hard behind the scenes to enhance the racegoer’s experience at Killarney Races focusing on offering an unrivalled quality boutique festival experience.” MayFest takes place from Sunday May 15 to Tuesday 17 inclusive, offering two jump cards followed by an all-flat fixture. A popular fixture with locals, this offers a great chance to let your hair down before the tourist season really kicks off in town! JulyFest is a real highlight on the racing and social calendar that takes place from Monday July 11 to Friday 15 inclusive with

a mix of national hunt and flat meetings across the five day fixture. There is plenty of competition off the track also, as Friday the 15th will host the Dawn Milk Best Dressed Lady Competition. AugustFest takes place from Thursday August 18 to Saturday 20 inclusive. A wonderful festival to mark the last hurrah of the busy summer season in the Kingdom. This is a great social occasion with top class racing where all the fun of a festival is guaranteed in abundance. OctoberFest is a relatively new addition to the calendar at Killarney Races and offers patrons a more relaxed weekend festival experience on Saturday October 1 and Sunday 2. There are lots of options available to experience the festivals at Killarney Races. From general admission tickets with ample public food and beverage offerings, free car parking and ample lawn and indoor seating options to value added group packages complete with racecards, food and beverages. WORLD CHAMPION: Caoimhe celebrates her world title with parents Geraldine and Garry, her sister Sadbh and bother Aodhàn and dancing teacher Áine Murphy at the Waterfront in Belfast on Wednesday.

Kilcummin’s Caoimhe is world dance champion | By Sean Moriarty

A 14-year-old Kilcummin girl is celebrating this week after she won the World Championship in Irish Dancing. On Wednesday, Caoimhe O'Halloran faced 210 other girls in the An Coimisiún Le Rincí Gaelacha (CLRG) World Championships in Belfast. CLRG is the oldest and largest world governing body for competitive Irish step dancing. This a different competition to the Chomhdháil World Irish Dance Championship which is taking place at the INEC this week. Caoimhe, who trains locally with the Áine Murphy Academy of Irish Dancing in Gneeveguilla, was judged on three different disciplines at the competition, a hornpipe, reel and set.

The St Brigid’s Secondary school student was determined to go one better than her second place at the CLRG world championships in North Carolina three years ago. The international competition did not run for the last three years due to the pandemic but there has been several Irish competitions since then. Pre-COVID Caoimhe won the All-Ireland title and last November she was crowned Munster champion at an event in Killarney. Her proud mother Geraldine said her success was down to serious commitment and dedication. “Caoimhe was determined to go one better than Greensboro,” she told the Killarney Advertiser. “She practices three evenings a week, for three hours, so there were a lot of hard calls made. There was no meeting friends and other things teenagers get up to.”

Recruitment agency offering free job search for Ukrainians | By Sean Moriarty A Killarney recruitment agency is linking recently arrived Ukrainians with employers in the town free of charge.

Fillashift.ie is working with Killarney Chamber of Tourism and Commerce and the Killarney-based Irish Hoteliers Association members. The recruitment agency has developed a QR Code on its website where Ukrainians can upload their CV and they will be instantly translated into English. “The Ukrainian community here are

highly qualified individuals, and we look forward to them working amongst us in Killarney and the surrounding areas,” Kate O’Shea of Fillashift.ie told the Killarney Advertiser. “We have developed a QR Code which enables applicants to upload their CVs in any language and our software will translate to English. This has been great in assisting ease of transition for the refugees. We have also contacted Killarney Chamber and Kerry IHF employers in Killarney and they are submitting their open positions to us so that we can match them with the applicants. UKRAINIAN NEWS

"My life is gradually getting better - I feel safe again" I never thought about emigrating to another country. | By Natalia Krasnenkova In Kyiv, Ukraine, I had everything I needed: my own PR company, which I have been building for 12 years, interesting and important projects, a beautiful apartment in which I recently finished renovations, my family, my children, my favourite places - cafes, botanical gardens, Opera house. I just bought two new dresses for spring and ordered a frame for a new piece of art. I had tickets to the theatre and plane tickets to Stockholm, where my son and I were to fly on vacation. My life was bright and full of meaning but then on February 24 at 5am it changed unequivocally. The sounds of explosions and sirens became commonplace. Yes, as if you lived all your life to the sound of an air alarm. I lost sleep. I lived in constant stress and fear for my family and friends. Three weeks after the start of the war, I found myself in a distant country - Ireland. All my previous life fitted in one small green suitcase. And here we are with children in winter clothes in +14 degrees Celsius in Killarney. Thus began a new period of my life. Now my temporary home is here in Killarney and the locals have become my family in these weeks. The first thing that catches your eye here today is the incredible number

of shades of green. When you go out into the National Park, your eyes are simply dazzled by the shining green, in the shadows I see rich green, and in the distance - green-brown mountains rise. Incredible beauty. Here in Killarney, the air is so clean and the nature is so beautiful that if I were an artist, I would paint my best work here and sell it at auction. When we arrived at Dublin Airport, when we were distributed in different regions, all the people said that we were very lucky to get to Killarney. Now I understand why.

PEOPLE!

The people in Killarney are wonderful. All locals accepted us, Ukrainian refugees as relatives. The first days at the

Innisfallen Hotel many locals came to us and brought us basic things such as children's toys and clothes. It was very appropriate, because we all came in winter clothes, in which we left our houses when the war began. Local photographer Marie Carroll O'Sullivan took care of us. Mother's Day became special for us. Marie and her friends prepared a surprise for us and brought flowers, sweets and gifts. Local scouts came to us with flowers, and neighbours from Fossa - with cakes. For two weeks, many people came to us to ask how we were doing and how they could help and offer a job. Such sincere care from strangers has become a very effective factor in the adaptation of children and adults. All Ukrainians who have lived in constant anxiety and fear since the beginning of the war were finally able to breathe calmly. We felt really safe around good people. The local Killarney community needs to know that they have given us more than just the things we need, they have given us a sense of family.

SCHOOL

I was amazed at how easy it is to get into the principal's office. We arrived in Killarney on Wednesday, and on Friday I was standing on the doorstep of St Brendan’s College. Mr Sean Coffey listened to me and immediately agreed to take our boys to school. On Monday,

15.04.2022 my son and his new friends continued their education in Killarney. The staff at the school are very hospitable and despite many new things in the organisation of education, our children go to school every morning with interest and joy. Later, all our children joined education in different schools in Fossa and Killarney. Our education system differs from the Irish one in that Ukrainian children study for 11 years and all our schools are mixed - for boys and girls. The school curriculum is tougher, there are many subjects, few sports and no practices at all. Our lessons last 45 minutes and you do not need to wear a uniform. So far, most of our children enjoy a two-week Easter break and a short day on Wednesday. They are especially affected by the fact that it is possible for everyone to study for another extra year.

WORK

Despite the fact that not all Ukrainians who came to Kerry know English, everyone who wanted has already got a job. It is good that we are in a tourist region with many job vacancies. Our women are already working in various hotels and cafes, and men - on the construction site. After all, I now have an interesting job. I remember my journalistic past and write texts again. In three weeks I already have many acquaintances here with whom you can talk and ask for advice. It is most pleasant for me when I walk around the town, and one of my acquaintances shouts "Hello, Natalia". This town is gradually becoming my home. My life is gradually getting better, I feel safe again. And I dream of only one thing - that the war in Ukraine is over so that I can return home.

Irish show provokes positive emotions More than 70 Ukrainians were left impressed by the Irish dance, the wonderful vocals of Giselle O’Meara and unsurpassed stage images, at a local show on Monday night. Ukrainians from the Innisfallen Hotel were guests of the traditional Gaelic Roots show in the Killarney Avenue Hotel at the invitation of Niall and Suzanne Kelsh O’Donoghue. It was a great combination of traditional singing and dancing with more modern. "Cultural language is understood by all without exception. That's why we wanted to share our culture with Ukrainians. We also wanted Ukrainians who came to Ireland to feel happy,” Ni-

Ukrainians preparing to welcome guests for Easter When a local charity offered to bring sweets and gifts for Easter, the Ukrainians staying in the Innisfallen Hotel decided the best way they could thank them was with a concert. 'Consider it Cakes' is a nationwide charity who have a group of volunteers living around Killarney who bake for free and will deliver the treats to the women and children. Some of the Ukrainians are talented musicians and using a synthesizer and guitars that they have are now putting the final touches to their concert. The women have already started rehearsals and are preparing a small concert and plan to perform both traditional Ukrainian and modern Ukrainian songs. "We will perform the ancient military march of the Ukrainian insurgents 'Oh,

the Red Viburnum in the Meadow', which is sung by all Ukrainians today to raise the fighting spirit," said Victoria Volkova, a music teacher and one of the organisers of the concert. Legendary musician Pink Floyd recently played ''Oh, the Red Viburnum in the Meadow' together with the Ukrainian musician, Andriy Khlyvnyuk, who is currently fighting in the Armed Forces of Ukraine. This song, which can be viewed on YouTube: Pink Floyd - Hey, Hey, Rise Up (feat Andriy Khlyvnyuk of Boombox), became famous all over the world. Women with children are already preparing traditional talismans - motanka dolls and other souvenirs. "We can unite with the local community in the context of culture and tradition. We can get to know each other better through our songs and traditions,” Victoria added.

NEW LOOK: Local hairdresser Sean Taaffe pictured cutting women’s and children’s hair at the Innisfallen Hotel at the weekend.

"For the first time during the war they smiled" Local hairdressers treat women and children to new hairstyles Did you know that it is very important for Ukrainian women to maintain their beauty? Self-care is a basic need for us. Therefore, a new hairstyle or manicure - becomes a real therapy for our women. Well-known stylist from Killarney Sean Taaffe and his team made a pleasant surprise for Ukrainians a few days ago. They arrived at the Innisfallen Hotel and gave people new hairstyles. The women were happy, and for almost the first time during the war they smiled. Sean Taffe told us that he was the least he could do for Ukrainian women and their children. Iryna Sirotyna from Kyiv came to Ireland with three children. Her youngest son, 18-month-old Makar, sat in his mother's arms while Sean Taaffe cut his hair. Irina says that the hairdresser has found an approach to her son and she is very happy. The mother of three now also looks like a real model. Her eyes are smiling. The Sean Taaffe team packed their suitcases and headed to the Killarney Hotel, where more Ukrainians were

waiting for them. The next day Niall Ashe from Lincoln Skins Killarney arrived at the hotel to make our men and boys beautiful. Organiser Daniel East modestly stood aside and watched the magic of transformation. He had no idea what an important event he held. In addition to new hairstyles, he gave 200 Ukrainians a sense of joy and satisfaction, feelings that brought us back to a peaceful life.

Дорогі yкраїнці з Кіларні! Запрошуємо вас долучитись до Великодніх розваг разом з дітьми в Killarney Outlet Centre.

TRADITIONS FROM HOME: A long-standing Ukrainian tradition is to tidy up their homes before Easter so the Ukrainians did that on Sunday morning.

Easter traditions continue in new accommodation

It is a long-standing Ukrainian tradition to tidy up our homes, plant flowers, saw dry tree branches and sweep leaves on the eve of Easter. Sunday morning, Ukrainians from the Innisfallen Hotel were very active as we decided to clean up the area around the hotel and the path in the park that leads from Fossa to Killarney. In the old days, women used to paint the house white with white lime to prepare for the holidays. Therefore, Ukrainians who have private homes or relatives in the villages always gather a week before Easter to work together. 11-year-old Volodymyr Kravchenko from Kharkiv is carefully clearing last year's leaves near the hotel. "At home we clean every spring at our summer cottage and I really like this kind of work." Lilia Paseka, who sweeps the rubbish, says she wants to thank both the hotel staff and the local community for the warm welcome in Killarney. "Now this is our home, and it should be cozy and comfortable," she said. Neither the wind nor the rain prevented us from working well and happily in the yard. There were so many people willing to help that there were not enough shovels and brooms for everyone. Olga Tkachenko and her 13-year-old son Ivan actively worked together with all the people. Due to the war in 2014,

Olga was forced to leave her home in Donbass and move to Kyiv. Now she is again forced to save her family from the Russian army by coming to Ireland. Olga almost cries, and says she is very grateful to the Irish who warmly sheltered her family. "I want to thank everyone for their work," she added. Svitlana Malysheva and Olena Okhrimchuk jog in the park every day. They took rubber gloves and large bags with them and removed all the rubbish on the picturesque path leading from Fossa to Killarney. But a real surprise was prepared by Svetlana. She brought with her from Ukraine the seeds of marigold flowers which are very popular. They have been growing in every Ukrainian yard for centuries and we compose songs about these flowers. Marigold - plant of the daisy family, typically with yellow, orange, or copper-brown flowers, that is widely cultivated as an ornamental. Imagine, marigolds for Ukrainians are as important a symbol as the Rose of Tralee is to the Irish. Svetlana planted the seeds in a flowerbed near the hotel. In June, everyone will be able to admire the bright yellow and orange flowers near our new home.

Kay to be remembered during fundraising walk | By Michelle Crean

The '3k for Kay' walk takes place on Sunday April 24 from Navé coffee and includes a loop around Ross Castle and back to Navé after for coffees/teas and refreshments. It leaves at 10am sharp and everyone is invited to come along and join in and wear Kay's favourite colour blue. Kay was a very much loved member of staff in the accounts office in Daly's SuperValu for 25 years and also worked in Pretty Polly before that. Unfortunately she was diagnosed with stomach cancer which she so bravely fought but sadly died on April 25, 2017 a day after her

birthday. "She was always there for everyone and was that wife, mom, sister, friend and aunt that always gave an ear to listen or a shoulder to cry on," her daughter Jenny McCarthy told the Killarney Advertiser. "She was the heart of our family, she left behind so many memories and will be forever missed dearly. She fought hard until the very end." Last year's '3k for Kay' was done virtually due to COVID and Kay's family and friends were overwhelmed to raise to €13,000 for the Irish Cancer Society. "We were blown away. The Irish Cancer Society gave us so much support and guidance over the years, we were thrilled to be able to give back. We are so thankful to all that took part." Donation buckets will be available on the day or people can donate on justgiving.ie website '3K FOR KAY- In Memory of Kay McCarthy'.

IN MEMORY: A walk will be held to remember Kay McCarthy who sadly lost her battle with cancer in April 2017.

WALK: Sean and Jenny McCarthy pictured during last year's '3k for Kay' fundraising walk which takes place next week.

Last year's fundraiser in memory of a much loved Killarney woman raised a massive €13,000 - and her family and friends are all set to do it again this month.

SUPPORT: The MS South Kerry branch are seeking the public's support as they launch their '100k in May' fundraiser. Pictured are: Éilís Flemming and Jillian Jones.

"COVID is still causing charities to suffer" MS South Kerry launch '100k in May' fundraiser | By Michelle Crean COVID restrictions meant a tough few years for a lot of charities but with fundraising back to in-person events one in particular is seeking your support. For a second year running the MS South Kerry branch is holding its '100k in May' to help raise funds for local services for members suffering from the condition. "Last year's donations kept us going for the second half of 2021, we raised nearly €8,000," Jillian Jones from the MS South Kerry branch, told the Killarney Advertiser. "It came to life from a conversation with Éilís Flemming, a supporter of the branch. COVID is still causing charities to suffer across the country and this is the year we feel the branch will be really affected as our current finances only allow us to plan for the first six months of 2022." During the pandemic members were able to keep active as physio and exercise classes were transferred online with a 400% increase in attendance. "We will continue to do this as the response has been great as we can't open our centre due to the limited spaces and cost of rent, which fortunately we haven't had to pay since the start of COVID. We now have seven therapists working for the branch across South Kerry based in Cahersiveen, Cromane, Killarney and Kenmare. Fortunately due to some of the needs of our members they are receiving house calls."

In the early '70s MS Kerry was set up, then in 1978-79 it divided into three branches; MS South Kerry, MS Tralee, and the MS Society Listowel/North Kerry. "In the South Kerry branch we have about one hundred plus members, a variety of ages from mid-20s to 80. There are more in the area but have not reached out yet. The members greatly miss meeting up. These group meetings are valuable as it's hard to talk to family and friends as the same level of understanding is not there." In recent weeks the branch has been able to start their church gate collections again but they are significantly down on 2019, she added. "We are struggling to have enough collectors for the church gates and other planned fundraisers. If anybody is able for forthcoming events please contact us mssouthkerry@gmail.com. We are hoping to have the Busking August Bank Holiday and the Old Kenmare Walk in October." To support the branch go to GoFundMe: '100k-in-may-2022' and make a donation. For those who may need support the Community Welfare Officer is Siobhan Lynch based in Killarney. ished on Port Road.

In the intervening years several international cycle races including the Rás Tailteann have passed through town but it is 13 years since Killarney hosted a stage start or finish of a major cycle race. The town also hosted stage starts and finishes during the Nissan International Classic era of the late 1990s. That will change tomorrow as Killarney Cycling Club host the start of Stage Two of the Rás Mumhan. Over 150 riders representing Ireland, Scotland and England will roll out from St Oliver’s National School in Ballycasheen at 10.30am. The peloton and its supporting cast of team cars and officials will create a colourful convoy along Countess Road and Mission Road. The town centre element of the race will be neutralised until the riders reach Fossa at around 11am. From there the cyclists will race over a daunting course via Killorglin, Bealach Óisín Pass and Coomakista near Waterville before the stage finishes in Sneem later in the day. Back in 2009, during the professional Tour of Ireland, Killarney cycling fans got to see some of the best riders in the world in action, as the second stage fin-

Local cycling journalist Padraig Harnett remembers the August 2009 race. He was travelling in a press car as the race made its way off Mushermore Mountain near Millstreet. Irish star Mark Cassidy and Belgian rival Dennis Van Winden had built up a six minute lead over the chasing pack. “It was the greatest performance I have ever seen, the cyclists came off the mountain at 80km/h, I was in a press car and the driver had to back off – it was too fast for the car,” Padraig told the Killarney Advertiser. The stage was eventually won by ‘Manx Missile’ Mark Cavendish who now holds the joint-record for the most stage wins in the Tour de France. The peloton also included Lance Armstrong who finished third in the Tour de France earlier in the year and before his fall from grace. “Cassidy and Van Winden were caught coming in by Lissivigeen. It resulted in a bunch sprint to the finish, Cavendish won but there was no doubt that the thousands of people along Port Road were there to see Armstrong. Hindsight is great,” he added. “Armstrong refused an interview, it was raining and he was too cold after the stage and stayed in the team bus.”

Huge amount raised in four hour fundraiser | By Sean Moriarty A total of €2,750 was raised in four hours by members of Killarney Fire and Rescue to help fund a fire engine for Ukraine. A countywide initiative is underway by all Kerry-based firefighters. They hope to raise enough funds to buy a fire tender and deliver it to the war-torn country. On Friday last they held a coffee and

candle sale at the Gala Shop on Upper College St. The store is managed by Iryna Rudenko who is originally from the Sumy Oblast region of Ukraine. “To raise that much money in a short time was phenomenal,” Killarney Fire Station Officer, Paudie Mangan, told the Killarney Advertiser. “We would like to thank the people of Killarney for their generosity, many people made very large donations but did not want a candle or coffee in return.”

Dance championships worth €12 million to local economy | By Michelle Crean The arrival of over 1,400 dancers and their supporters, who are competing in the World Irish Dance Championships this week, is set to bring as much as €12 million to the local economy - a huge economic boost for the town. Competitors have travelled from America, Scotland, England, Europe and all over Ireland to take part in the An Chomhdháil World Irish Dance Championships which kicked off in Killarney on Monday. They will compete for a world title in the championships at The Gleneagle and INEC Arena which runs until tomorrow (Saturday). Over 19 competitions take place over the six-day championships and winners are announced every day after each competition. The competitions are held in the INEC auditorium and The Gleneagle Ballroom. The age profile of the competitors is nine to over 21-years-old. The competitors will be accompanied by an entourage

of organisers, teachers, adjudicators, musicians, families, friends, supporters and spectators. This is Killarney’s sixth occasion to host the An Chomhdháil World Irish Dance Championships. The economic benefits of these championships will be felt right across Killarney’s hotels, B&Bs, restaurants, shops and many other businesses. Studies carried out between 2016 and 2019 calculated the championships were worth €12 million to the local economy. An Chomhdháil, the organisation who run the World Irish Dance Championships, have an extensive branch network worldwide and is one of the most progressive Irish dance organisations, being the first to bring in the no make-up rule for girls up to and including under 12 years of age in 2007. “We are honoured to welcome the 2022 An Chomhdháil World Irish Dance Championships,” Patrick O’Donoghue, CEO of The Gleneagle Group, said. “We wish all the competitors the very best of luck and we hope everyone enjoys their stay in Killarney.”

Major changes ahead for Kerry Diocese The Diocese of Kerry is introducing a new ministry as a response to the changing needs of parish communities. Training for the new Ministry of the Lay Pastoral Leader will begin in September and it's expected that there will be a team of volunteer lay pastoral leaders working in each pastoral area over the coming five years. The lay pastoral leaders will work alongside the clergy parish councils and pastoral councils. Their role will be to lead, co-ordinate and support different aspects of parish life. The diocese is offering people the opportunity to express interest in the role and explore the commitment and training involved at this time. The need for Lay Pastoral Leaders has resulted as parish life has changed greatly with one obvious change that there are fewer priests. In the future, parishes will be served by a team of clergy and lay pastoral leaders working together as a team. The ministry includes coordinating, leading and supporting pastoral activities in the local area. It will involve taking responsibility for some ministries traditionally carried out by priests. This new ministry will complement the ministry of

the deacon and the priest.

THE ROLE

The role of the lay pastoral leader is to coordinate and take responsibility for a particular aspect of ministry, in response to local needs. Possible ministries will be; Preparation for Sacraments – Nurturing the relationship between home, school and parish; Coordination of initiatives to support families presenting their children to receive sacraments; Pastoral Care – coordinating visitation of the housebound/

elderly/those in nursing homes; Supporting nursing home staff and residents to celebrate moments of prayer; Liturgy - coordinating the various liturgical ministries that enliven Sunday celebrations of Mass; Faith formation - exploring faith with adults, facilitating opportunities for prayer and exploring the Word of God; Youth Ministry – ensuring that youth and young people are supported, valued and enabled to reach their God-created potential. The training will include: Personal and spiritual development [Prayer, mentor-

ing and retreat days], Pastoral Ministry [Placement and training in ministry], Modules in Pastoral Theology [Mary Immaculate College Certificate in Pastoral Ministry, Level 6], Leadership [developing skills and working as part of a team]. The formation will be delivered through a blend of online modules and face-to-face gatherings which will take place at a location in the Diocese of Kerry. The role could suit someone who works well with others and can commit to three to four hours per week as a volunteer lay Pastoral Leader over the coming five years. “I warmly welcome the Ministry of Lay Pastoral Leadership that we embark upon," Bishop Ray Browne said. "The future church will be different, not better or worse!” People already involved in parish or community activity, who have initiative and energy, and who want to work in their local pastoral area, are encouraged to apply. "Candidates are invited to complete an expression of interest form available on the diocesan website, and participate in gatherings during the month of May to explore the role,” Frances Rowland, Diocesan Pastoral Team, said. watch Hard Cell A new comedy series has dropped on Netflix. ‘Hard Cell’, starring Catherine Tate, is a six-part mockumentary set in the backdrop of a prison. Catherine plays many different personalities in the series including prison director Laura, first-time prisoner Ange and Irish, mammy obsessed, character Ros. If as successful as British comedy ‘The Office’, it could hit US screens.

The ‘Hard Cell’ will also feature stars such as Eastenders Cheryl Fergison and Lorna Brown, who has played roles in ‘Batman’ and ‘Les Misérables’. The comedy, set in fictional female prison HMS Woldsley, straddles the line between humour and tackling important themes regarding the prison system.

While Jani and Zosa cannot afford a night’s stay at the magic hotel, they can interview to join the staff, and are soon taken away on the greatest and most exhilarating adventure of their lives. But once inside, Jani discovers their contracts are everlasting and that underneath the glamour, is some dangerous and treacherous secrets to be discovered. With door attendant Bel as her only ally, Jani embarks on a dangerous mission to discover the mystery at the heart of the hotel and free Zosa

HEALTH & FITNESS Advice - By Brian Foley Brian is available for advice and fitness consultations, Call 087 403 0894 or email info@activate.ie • www.activate.ie

Do we all have the same 24 hours in the day? Anyone who knows me or has been reading my columns/blogs for any length of time, you already know that I get really upset when I think someone is being taken advantage of, or if I see someone making elitist and misguided judgements against anyone based on their appearance or lifestyle. That’s why, when someone recently said the following to me I got a little upset: “The majority of the population don’t get results because they lack the self-discipline and probably could benefit from at least pushing past sitting on the couch every day.” My argument against most ‘fitness influencers’ and even some supposed fitness professionals in general is that the regimes, typically six to 12 weeks, they take their clients through are punitive and have no lasting value. They don’t teach people anything about their relationship with food and their bodies, and they can be physically and emotionally harmful. But anyway, I initially didn’t answer the comment that this person made because I don’t tend to argue with people whose minds are already set, and their information is gleaned from David Goggins for psychology and 'Men's/Women's Health Magazine' for physiology, I typically just leave it. People have the right to disagree with me, and why argue? Afterwards, someone who overheard this conversation asked me why I didn’t engage. I didn’t respond to the comment because I don’t agree with what was said about ‘self-discipline’ and ‘sitting on the couch all day,’ which is exceptionally ableist. Besides the fact that the comment implies that overweight/unfit people do nothing but sit on the couch all day, which makes steam come out of my ears, what they said is very similar to the meaning behind the quote, “we all have the same 24 hours in the day”. I’ve seen this 24 hours comment a lot, especially in 'Nutrition Challenge' and fitness circles. It drives me absolutely insane. Here’s just a few quotes I pulled from online: “No one is too busy in this world. We all have the same 24 hours. It’s all about priorities.” “People tell me: “I don’t have the time to

do this business.”, Lies; We all have the same 24 hours in a day. You make time for what you want. No excuses.” “We all have the same 24 hours in a day. If someone else seems to be accomplishing more than you, they’re sacrificing more than you.” When I look at these quotes, all I see is blame and humiliation. I’m pretty sure that when someone throws around the ‘same 24 hours in a day’ thing, they’re just trying to make themselves feel good by making other people feel like crap. And although they’re meant to be ‘inspirational,’ these sayings shame others into feeling as though they aren’t trying hard enough to meet other peoples’ expectations for them. Needless to say, it’s nobodys job to meet YOUR expectations of how you think they should be running their life. There are a lot of reasons why someone might not work out, or be ‘successful’ in meeting their health and fitness goals, but I’m willing to bet that none of these reasons are simple. People are complex, and to sum them up in a blanket comment doesn’t do them justice, nor is it fair. Sure, the laws of time apply to everyone. Nobody has 27 hours in a day. But real life, not ‘excuses,’ can impact a person’s ability to just ‘get off the couch’ and live a life that’s the stuff of an inspirational quote. No matter how hard some people work, life still challenges them beyond their capabilities. Yes, there are always outliers, and their stories are the ones that make it into the media. Someone who was living in abject poverty, with no home and living on Social Welfare and who is now the CEO of some company. Even some ‘fitness gurus’ have “failure to success” stories. People love this stuff, and it’s great for marketing and sales. But the majority of people have lives that won’t turn out that way, and that has nothing to do with their level of motivation or the number of hours in their day. Next week read Part Two where we look at some research as to why many people are challenged when it comes to fitness due to things that can throw a spanner in the works of even the most persistent of people.

Fans preparing for Ireland's biggest Star Wars Festival The May the 4th Be With You Festival - first launched in 2018 by Fáilte Ireland - is returning to The Skellig Coast region after two years of being hosted virtually. The festival, which will kick off on Wednesday May 4 at The Skellig Experience Visitor Centre and will run until Sunday May 8, was created to celebrate the filming of the Star Wars film franchise on Skellig Michael. 'The Force Awakens Episode VII' and 'The Last Jedi Episode VIII' both featured the iconic Skellig Islands where it was known as Ahch-To Island, effectively the centre of the Jedi Universe. The Star Wars connection to the Skellig Coast remains very strong and in 2019 the festival welcomed fans from all over the world who visited this beautiful region and enjoyed a weekend full of various events including Virtual Reality, Yoda

Yoga, Star Wars Parade and much more. A team of local volunteers, together with Fáilte Ireland and the 501st Ireland Garrison have continued to bring this festival to Star Wars fans virtually over the past two years due to ongoing restrictions and are delighted to be able to launch the in-person event once again on May 4. This year’s festival will see the launch of an exciting Star Wars Fan Film Competition. Along with the competition, the event will also feature a Star Wars Treasure Trail, Comic-Con event, Quizzes, Dark Skies night-time events and so much more. There will also be events running online throughout the weekend. “It is fantastic to see this festival return to an in-person event for 2022," local volunteer Lisa O’Sullivan, said. "It provides visitors the opportunity to explore The Skellig Coast region and all it has to offer."

IT'S BACK: The May the 4th Be With You Festival will return to an in-person event after two years of being hosted virtually.

New project empowers parents to bring Irish into the home Inspired by the challenges of home schooling during the pandemic, a new digital Irish language resource is now available for parents and guardians in Kerry. ‘Is Féidir Linn’ aims to make the language accessible for all parents and guardians, regardless of their own Irish language skills or experience, using phrases, stories and songs for children about the daily routines of family life. Launched by broadcaster, writer and parent, Maia Dunphy, the resource was developed by Gael Linn, an organisation which supports schools in promoting the use of the Irish language beyond the classroom. The interactive resource, which is acces-

sible on computer and mobile devices, features everyday phrases in both English and Irish, as well as a sound-recording of each to help with pronunciation. The new resource has evolved from a social media campaign, #GaeilgeSaBhaile, that Gael Linn created during the pandemic to support families home schooling. Useful phrases for parents include “Brostaigh ort, maith an cailín”, “Hurry up, good girl”, and inspired by the pandemic, “Ná dean dearmad do lámha a ní”, “Don’t forget to wash your hands”. “While home schooling during the pandemic, many parents and guardians found themselves using more Irish with their children, some having not used the language themselves since school,

Several members of the crime family and their associates have been placed an a ‘watch list’ by the Office of Foreign Assets Control in the US. On Tuesday US Ambassador to Ireland, Claire Cronin, said a reward of up to $5 million is being offered for information which leads to the financial disruption of the group or the arrest or conviction of Christopher Kinahan Snr, Daniel Kinahan or Christopher Kinahan Jr. She was speaking at a media briefing at Dublin’s City Hall that was also attended by Garda Commissioner Drew Harris.

or having never learned it at all," Edel Ní Bhraonáin, Gaelbhratach Project Co-ordinator at Gael Linn, said. "While it may have been a challenge at the time, we’ve heard from many who were also inspired to reignite their love and use of the language, or to begin learning Irish for the first time. “This resource has been designed with the parent in mind, as much as the child, with accessible stories and songs that lift the language off the page and the screen, to give families the language for everyday activities at home like getting ready for school or the bedtime routine." Funded by Foras na Gaeilge, ‘Is Féidir Linn’ is available for free at: www.gaelbhratach.ie/is-feidir-linn/.

Missing Irish man likely killed by neighbour in Australia An Irish man who has been missing without trace in the Australian Outback could have been killed by a neighbour a court in the Northern Territory has heard. Paddy Moriarty was last seen in the village of Larrima five years ago. The then 70-year-old, who is originally from Abbeyfeale, left a bar in the village on the evening of December 17 and has not been seen since. Neither Paddy or his dog Kellie and his quad have been sighted since he left

the pub. An intensive police investigation, including a reward of $250,000 (€170,000) for information about his disappearance has not led to anyone being arrested to date. An inquest into his disappearance was held earlier this week. “In my opinion Paddy was killed in the context of and likely due to the ongoing feud he had with his nearest neighbours. He likely died on the evening of December 16, 2017,” Coroner Greg Cavanagh told the court.

Call-out for entries to national art competition The National Gallery of Ireland is seeking applications from Kerry artists, children and young people for this year’s Zurich Portrait Prize and Zurich Young Portrait Prize. The Gallery invites submissions from across the island of Ireland, and from Irish artists living abroad. The Zurich Young Portrait Prize, now in its fourth year, is open to young people aged 18 and under. The Zurich Portrait Prize aims to encourage interest in contemporary portraiture and to showcase the National Portrait Collection at the National Gallery of Ireland. The winner of the competition will receive a cash prize of €15,000 and will be commissioned to create a work for

the national portrait collection, for which they will be awarded a further €5,000. Two additional awards of €1,500 will be given to highly commended works. The competition is split into four age categories and is open to young people of all abilities aged up to 18. Winners in each age category and an overall winner will be chosen from a shortlist of 20 works. Winners will receive a bespoke art box and a cash prize. “This year, we look forward to learning about how artists and young people have been inspired in recent times as we welcome submissions from all age groups, from artists here in Ireland and Irish artists abroad," Sean Rainbird of the National Gallery of Ireland, said.

TRIP: BUMBLEance drivers Paul Stanley and Áine Phelan are currently delivering aid to the city of Medyka on the Polish/Ukrainian border.

Longest BUMBLEance journey - to Ukraine! Children’s ambulance charity BUMBLEance has set off on its longest journey ever – to the Polish-Ukrainian border. BUMBLEance drivers Áine Phelan and Paul Stanley are making the trip to the city of Medyka on the Polish/Ukrainian border. Their ambulance is stocked with goods and supplies. Áine has worked with BUMBLEance for nearly two years. Previously an EMT, she now spends her days helping children and for her this trip is a real passion project.

On the morning of departure, Áine was waved off by Glór Na Mara Primary School in Tramore where they have four Ukrainian refugee pupils now with them. “It’s a real mixture of emotions with me right now. I’m eager to get to the border and deliver supplies and whatever help we can offer in an overwhelming situation. Gratitude for the support we have received from so many people in different ways. A bit sad that while we leave our families for what we expect to be a short time we know millions are separated from their loved ones not knowing when they will be reunited,” she said.

Campaigners deliver petition to Taoiseach's Cork Office Local campaigners descended on An Taoiseach Micheál Martin’s Cork office on Wednesday lunchtime to deliver a 10,000 signed petition. The group of local constituents and Uplift members dressed as nuns and gathered outside his South-Central constituency office at Turner's Cross,

on the Evergreen Road, calling for the new National Maternity Hospital to be publicly owned and secular. The National Maternity Hospital campaign' group and Uplift are calling for a fully public and secular National Maternity Hospital that is free from religious influence and capable of providing the necessary reproductive healthcare.

Donie is guest of honour at New York event CNN broadcaster Donie O'Sullivan was guest of honour at a special event hosted by the Kerry Association of New York on Tuesday night. The Cahersiveen native has made a name for himself in America as one of the country’s top news correspondents. He gained a legion of worldwide fans for his coverage of the 2020 US Presidential Election. O’Sullivan travelled the country reporting on the role conspiracy theories were playing in voters' attitude to the election and to the country's response to the

COVID-19 pandemic. He also reported live from outside the US Capitol during the riots of January 6, 2021. Host Tom O’Sullivan from Kenmare interviewed his fellow South Kerry man in front of a packed audience at the Bank of Ireland Hub in Midtown Manhattan. Donie spoke at length about the January riots. “Capitol Hill is the beacon of American democracy, and to see all this crazy stuff and tear gas, I had never been to a riot before,” he told the large group.

Russian airlines banned from EU The European Commission has banned 20 Russian airlines from operating in the EU – not due to the Ukrainian war – but because of strict safety regulations. The European Commissioner for Transport, Adina Vălean, said the ban was a result of these aviation companies failing to meet international safety standards.

Some of the companies’ aircraft were operating without certificates of air-worthiness. “We do not mix air safety and politics,” she said. “The airlines involved have knowingly acted in violation of international safety standards. This is not only a clear breach of the Chicago Convention [on international civil aviation], but it also creates an immediate safety threat.”

Brand new name for greenway projects The new greenway projects in Kerry will be known and branded as the ‘Kingdom of Kerry Greenways’. At a meeting of Kerry County Council on Monday, councillors were presented with naming options and brand concepts for the two greenway projects which are due to open this summer. The Tralee-Fenit and Listowel-Abbeyfeale greenways will be open to the public in the coming months. The decision on the name of the greenways follows a stakeholder survey in relation to the two north Kerry projects which was undertaken by Kerry County Council, Fáilte Ireland and local community and business representatives. The survey highlighted the importance of greenways as amenities for the local community as well as their role in attracting visitors to the county. Groups and individuals along both routes were surveyed to inform the creative process and to aid the development of distinctive branding and marketing by Zinc Design Consultants. "The naming process was undertaken in conjunction with Fáilte Ireland," Niamh O’Sullivan, Head of Kerry County Council’s Tourism Unit, said. "The aim of the process was to select a name for the Kerry Greenways that is distinctive, appealing, and attractive to a lo-

cal, domestic and international audience. "This process resulted in a wide variety of names being suggested with two names being shortlisted for consideration. The name will act as an overarching or collective name for new greenways and will apply to other greenway projects in Kerry in the coming years," she said. Following the meeting, the consultants will further refine the branding and design concepts in advance of the opening of the Tralee-Fenit and Listowel-Abbeyfeale greenways over the summer. The Cathaoirleach of Kerry County Council, Cllr Jimmy Moloney welcomed the decision. "It is really exciting to see the design and branding concepts for the greenways coming to fruition," he said. "This is an important part of the process. Choosing an overarching name such as ‘Kingdom of Kerry Greenway’ allows us to seamlessly integrate future greenways into the marketing and branding of all greenways in Kerry. "I want to thank all of the stakeholders who engaged with the consultation phase and I look forward to seeing the final brand being produced very soon."

Begonias liven up any display While it is still early for planting out bedding plants, geraniums, petunias and the like, it is an ideal time for planning! In the last few years, begonias have become very popular – understandably, as they flower well into the autumn, certainly until the first frosts. Their bright colours liven up any displays, though they really look their best when planted in groups of just begonias, as they tend to overcrowd smaller plants. There is still time to plant your own bulbs, which is a cost effective way to a grand display! Begonia corms are slightly unusual in that you plant the depressed, or dimpled, side up. Begonias are generally the last plants to be available in garden centres, as they are frost sensitive, and take quite a while to grow from the bulbs. I have mine sat since February in a warm(ish) shed, and not a sign of growth yet!

TRAILING GERANIUMS

For hanging baskets my favourites are trailing geraniums. I love the range of colours they come in, from white with pink stripes to burgundy and bright red. In my own schemes I always feel that they blend in with everything, not growing out of proportion but maintaining a nice tidy shape. Trailing geraniums are also called Ivy Leaf Geraniums, or Swiss Geraniums – though the Swiss ones have a smaller leaf and trail longer than the ivy leaved ones. Swiss Geraniums are

quite difficult to come by, but absolutely worth it. The main reason I extol trailing geraniums is that they are weather proof, not drying out too much in the wind, and impervious to rain. The main reason I would say not to choose them is that perhaps they do not trail far enough to suit some displays. On the other hand, window boxes will be unlikely to topple with the weight! Surfinias, or trailing petunias, are the number one choice for length. Trailing quite a distance they give a beautiful show, but do need caring for. I always recommend a total feed as opposed to a tomato feed, as the foliage needs fertilising too. My go to is Phostrogen, as a feed I find it excellent, but there is such a range of feeds available now it would be difficult to try them all out! The Irish seaweed feeds are very rich in nutrients, and create jobs along the Irish coast, so definitely worth trying, and the likes of Miracle Gro has been tried and tested over the years too. Surfinias never really feature around my house as I find they do not cope with the wind well at all, but they are second to none for colour! Bacopa, with its pretty white, mauve and pink flowers is a great space filler, as is Bidens with its bright yellow daisies. Marguerites are great upright plants, benefiting from frequent feeding and dead heading. The pastel shades of daisies are a perfect foil for the brighter colours of petunias, lobelia or marigolds!

Family caregiver is the one job no-one plans to apply for but when illness comes into the home many within our community step up to become caregivers and supporters. When dealing with illness within a family the caregiver’s journey can be easily overlooked often until someone finds themselves drained, isolated and overwhelmed. Given over two and half hours, one day a week, for six weeks, the Building Better Caregivers programme will offer valuable support and practical advice to those supporting a loved one through cancer diagnosis and treatment. It focuses on reducing stress through practical skills and tools for staying healthy. This evidence-based programme has been developed by Stanford University and will cover topics such as communi-

cation skills; staying well and getting a good night’s sleep; tools for managing fatigue; dealing with challenging emotions and behaviour and getting help and action planning. Recovery Haven is the first cancer support centre in Ireland to run this programme for caregivers and family members in the cancer setting. This project is part of a research project with MTU through the support of the National Cancer Control Programme. The programme will commence on Tuesday April 26 with an introductory session and will then run weekly, via Zoom from 10.30am to 1pm. Those interested in taking part can now register by phoning Recovery Haven Kerry on 066 7192122 or emailing siobhan@recoveryhavenkerry.com.

Classic club supports Kerry Mental Health tie day Killarney Valley Classic and Vintage Club (KVCVC) hosted the first classic car run of the season and raised funds for Kerry Mental Health in the process. The run started from the their clubhouse on the Lewis Road on Sunday. KVCVC share space with Kerry Mental Health Association who run a café in the same premises. “We are very grateful to Kerry Mental Health Association who not only provide us with a clubhouse for our various activ-

ities but also made lovely packed lunches for us to enjoy on the run,” club official James Looney said. Over 30 cars left Killarney and headed for Tralee via the Short Mountain. There they met members of the Tralee-based Kingdom Veteran Vintage and Classic Car Club and the two groups enjoyed a run over scenic roads in West Kerry including Brandon Point and Inch Beach. Some drivers wore quirky ties in support of Kerry Mental Heath’s annual Tie Day which took place on Friday last.

Value of Rally of the Lakes “cannot be measured” - Mayor The value that the Rally of the Lakes brings to Killarney “cannot be measured” according to town Mayor Marie Moloney. She was speaking at the official launch of the 2022 rally at the Gleneagle Hotel on Sunday afternoon. This year’s rally will take place on the weekend of April 29 to May 1 and has already attracted an entry of over 200 cars. Killarney and District Motor Club (KDMC), organisers of the upcoming 2022 International Rally of the Lakes, have announced details of the event. Clerk of the Course Darren McCormick, who is the first-ever second-generation clerk of the rally, has announced a compact, centralised route with stages in close proximity to Killarney town. Saturday will feature two runs over Kilsarcon, Banard and Gortnagane while Sunday will feature a double run over the iconic Molls Gap, Ballaghbeama, Shanera

and Caragh Lake. “The two-day International event is sure to attract a large number of spectators to the area in what is set to be the start of the tourism season in Killarney,” he said. It is the first time that the rally will run since 2019. “If you pardon the pun, it's great to see the rally back on the road,” Mayor Moloney told the assembled audience at the launch. “The coverage nationally and internationally that the rally brings to Killarney cannot be measured. It is fantastic how this event portrays Killarney.” The rally will open with a ceremonial start on Main St on Friday evening (April 29). “This family-friendly event is a great chance to see the cars and drivers up close in a safe controlled environment,” said event PRO Ivan Hurley.

A guaranteed recession The bond market has shot back into focus in recent weeks. For the last 40 years, it has been home to one of the most impressive bull runs in history. The disinflationary period from the early 1980s saw the structural decline of interest rates. Bizarrely, US Treasury Bonds were offering 16% a year back in 1980, a far cry from the pennies on offer today. Over the intervening years, continuous interest rate cuts were needed to facilitate GDP growth, but as rates approached zero, the central banks' weapon of choice ran out of ammo. Interest rates are now rising again as inflation persists. The 10-year treasury has gone from a low of 0.5% in the summer of 2020 to 2.4% as of the end of March. As the four-decade bull run comes to an end, what's next? Is the negative correlation between equities and bonds, the cornerstone of a diversified portfolio, now officially dead? Is a recession imminent?

RECESSION RUMOURS

If historical indicators are to be believed, then a recession is on the horizon. At the end of Q1, we saw multiple yield curve inversion, reigniting debates about an imminent recession.

TO LET: Rooms to rent in Tralee town. Contact 087-2944505 TO LET: Double room with ensuite in a modern semi detached house in Firies village. Close to shops and amenities. All mod cons. Parking available. 15 mins from Killarney/ Tralee/Killorglin.References required, ring 085-7214414 / 086-3613275.

Yield curve inversions between 2- and 10year bonds have long been regarded as a solid indicator of a recession in the next 12 to 24 months. In simple terms, a yield curve inversion occurs when the interest rate paid on short-term debt is higher than the interest rate paid on long-term debt of the same quality. In a healthy economy, the yield curve should be upward sloping (longer-term rates higher than short-term rates). Logically this makes sense as investors seek higher returns as a reward for the greater uncertainty that comes with investing over longer periods. When short-term interest rates exceed long-term rates, market sentiment suggests that the long-term outlook is poor, and the yields offered by long-term fixed income will continue to fall. But like everything, it's not quite that simple. Since 1978 there have been six inversions of the yield curve. While the above data shows yield curve inversions have accurately predicted recessions in the past, not all instances of yield curve inversions have resulted in recessions.

WANTED: Comfortable, insulated 1 bed apartment/bungalow, in quiet area within 5 minutes of Killarney town, with parking. HAPPS, long-term. 087-6600100 WANTED: Houses and apartments to rent

The 2- and 10-year yield curve has inverted 28 times since 1900, and in 22 of those instances, a recession has followed. While an indicator that accurately predicts a recession over 75% of the time shouldn't be ignored, some material changes in recent years need to be considered. Firstly, the Fed's manipulation of the yield curve has been well documented. I will stop short of saying this time is different, but the Feds intervention in the bond market over the prior decade suggests that a yield curve inversion may not be as valuable an indicator as it once was. For example, we saw a yield curve inversion in August 2019, yet US stocks are up almost 70% since then. A switch to cash over this period would have meant missing out on the fastest bull run in history. Another issue with inferring asset allocation decisions following a yield curve inversion is, even with this predictive information to hand, the alternative investment options are not as obvious as you might think. At least not across traditional asset classes. While US stock returns for the one-year period following a yield curve inversion are lower (4.7% vs. 9.0% during all other

one-year periods), the data also suggests that US Treasury Bonds will underperform US stocks over this period. A paper from Eugene Fama and Kenneth French concluded: "We find no evidence that inverted yield curves predict stocks will underperform Treasury bills for forecast periods of one, two, three and five years." So, while recent data may suggest that equity markets will experience slowing growth, switching to bonds or cash is not the answer. Stay the course. "The top of the wall was quite narrow so I hastily took this photo. I realised later that I could have achieved the same shot from The Commodore Hotel. I learnt the hard way!” Her image was taken with a Canon 80D, 24-105 L series f/4 lens with an aperture of F8 and shutter speed of 1/100, while the ISO was set at 200 and the image was taken at 6pm in the evening. organic skincare products Vegan skincare is the newest buzz word in this growing world of beauty as we all become more aware of our impact on our surroundings. You would not be alone if you were unsure what exactly it meant. Even if you are a vegan or a meat lover, you might be interested in these new products due to the benefits it delivers for your skin and the environment. Don't confuse vegan with cruelty free. Not every cruelty free product is vegan, as they may contain milk, honey or lanolin. I was delighted that we could take part in the launch of the new Sothys organics range which has a one hundred percent vegan formula combining advanced efficiency and natural active ingredients. It's important to use plant derived ingredients as they can contain more vitamins, minerals, and antioxidants to repair and hydrate. Animal ingredients can be harsh and clog pores, so vegan products are a soothing alternative. You feel far better if you eat healthier foods in their natural state and the same logic applies to skincare. Your skin will thrive off being fed natural vegan ingredients. In the heart of Correze, France, through their advanced research laboratory, Sothys created the new organics line.

To offer transparency, Sothys has chosen to have the entire range certified by Ecocert, which is in accordance to international Cosmos standard. The team at Sothys formulation laboratory have successfully developed ultra-efficient formulas while complying with rigorous and restrictive specifications. Highly specialised, Sothys has stood out ever since its founding by its unfailing commitment to beauty research and innovations and so offer the best nature has to offer. Plants don't grow or contain collagen like humans or animals do but they do play a large role in how animals and humans continue to produce collagen. Having a diet consisting of high healthy fats and vitamins especially Vitamin C, will produce more collagen in your body. As we age collagen production slows down, although it never stops, and if you supply your body with proper nutrition to make healthy collagen, ageing isn't as noticeable. Some food sources which are great are oranges, kiwis, red peppers, kale, broccoli to name a few. Vitamin C really helps to protect and support the skin's cells, reduce inflammation, strengthen skin and lessen hyperpigmentation. • For more information or to book a skin analysis, please call Jill on 064 6632966.

COLOURFUL TOWN: Julia Deady's image of Cobh was awarded first place in the Unrestricted category in the latest Killarney Camera Club photo competition.

HOMECOMING: Player of Match Danielle O'Leary and her parents Dan and Breda O'Leary from Rathmore at the homecoming celebration for the Kerry Ladies Football team after they won the National League Division Two title.

PRAYER TO ST. JOSEPH O St. Joseph, whose protection is so great, so strong, so prompt before the throne of God, I place in you all my interest and desires. O St. Joseph, do assist me by your powerful intercession, and obtain for me from your divine Son all spiritual blessings, through Jesus Christ, our Lord. So that, having engaged here below your heavenly power, I may offer my thanksgiving and homage to the most loving of Fathers. O, St. Joseph, I never weary contemplating you, and Jesus asleep in our arms; I dare not approach while He reposes near your heart. Press Him in my name and kiss His fine head for me and ask Him to return the kiss when I draw my dying breath. St. Joseph, Patron of departing souls pray for me. This prayer was found in the fiftieth year of Our Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ. In 1505 it was sent from the Pope to Emperor Charles when he was going into battle. Who ever shall read this prayer or hear it or keep it about themselves, shall never die a sudden death, or be drowned, nor shall be burned in any fire or shall be overpowered in battle. Say for nine mornings for anything you desire. It has never been known to fail, so be sure you really want what you ask for. In thanks for request granted.

In loving memory of Catherine (Kathy) O’Donoghue late of Tiernaboul who passed away on April 17th, 2020 also remembering our father Jack O’Donoghue whose 25th anniversary occurs in June Although you cannot hear her voice Or see her smile anymore Your mother walks beside you Just as she did before. She listens to your stories She wipes away your tears She wraps her arms around you And she understands your fears. It’s just she isn’t visible to see with the human eye But talk to her in silence And her spirit will reply. You’ll feel the love she has for you You’ll hear her in your heart She’s left her human body But your souls will never part. A mother holds her children’s hands for a little while but their hearts forever. Eternal rest grant unto her soul O’h Lord, may she rest in peace. Loved and remembered every day from your loving family. Anniversary Mass for Kathy will take place in The Church of the Resurrection on Monday the 18th April at 9.30am

Third time’s a charm | By Adam Moynihan

Super sub O’Leary sparkles as Kerry claim Division 2 title (and promotion) at third time of asking A spectacular cameo by second-half substitute Danielle O’Leary inspired Kerry to a three-point victory over Armagh in the Lidl National Football League Division 2 final on Sunday. The Rathmore player kicked two crucial points and a wonderful solo goal as The Kingdom came from behind to win a tense encounter in Croke Park. The result means that after four years in the second tier, and two final defeats in 2019 and 2021, The Kingdom will return to Division 1 for the 2023 season. Darragh Long and Declan Quill’s side raced into an early lead thanks to points by Niamh Ní Chonchúir and Aishling O’Connell but Armagh quickly found their groove. Eve Lavery, Catherine Marley, Bláithín Mackin and her older sister Aimee all scored to give the Ulster women a two-point lead. The elder Mackin and Fossa’s Erica McGlynn exchanged points to make it 5-3 before two trademark scores by Kerry veteran Louise Ní Mhuircheartaigh lev-

CROKE PARK elled matters just after the water break. Ní Mhuircheartaigh and Kerry were dealt a major blow in the 23rd minute, however, when the West Kerry woman was sent to the sin bin for a high challenge. With Kerry’s top forward on the sideline, Armagh seized the initiative. Marley, Aimee Mackin and Niamh Coleman made it 8-5, but Kerry responded through McGlynn to leave the scores at 8-6 at the interval. Mackin, the 2020 Player of the Year, kicked Armagh’s first three points of the second half and a fine score in reply by Kerry sub Danielle O’Leary left four between the teams. At this point it looked for all the world as though Kerry were heading towards

their third Division 2 final defeat in four years, but O’Leary had other ideas. The skilful forward slalomed through the opposition defence before rifling an unstoppable shot past Anna Carr in the Armagh goal. Game on. Aoife McCoy pointed for the Orchard County just before the water break but the final quarter was all about Kerry. Singles by Ní Mhuircheartaigh and the excellent Cáit Lynch made it a draw game and then O’Leary and Ní Mhuircheartaigh (two more) gave Kerry a three-point lead that they would not give up. The final whistle sounded and scenes of unbridled joy followed as Kerry finally laid their Division 2 ghost to rest. Next

up is the championship. If they can put in more performances like this, the only way is up.

Celtic manager criticises league over fixtures ‘joke’ Killarney Celtic manager Brian Spillane has strongly criticised the Kerry District League over the manner in which fixtures are being scheduled.

CONCERNS: Killarney Celtic boss Brian Spillane is worried that Kerry soccer teams are losing players due to uncertainty surrounding fixtures. Photo: Konrad Paprocki.

Speaking to the Killarney Advertiser ahead of Celtic’s Munster Junior Cup quarter-final against Villa FC (Sunday at 2pm, Celtic Park), Spillane said teams in Kerry are playing around one league game per month on average. Clubs are losing players as a result, the Celtic boss has claimed. “The league, the whole thing, it’s a joke,” Spillane said. “It’s a disaster. We’re in April now and on average teams have 10 games played, so they’re playing once a month. There are no cup draws done yet. You have two cups: the Greyhound and the Celsius. If 32 teams enter those, that’s five games. For any team that gets to both finals, that’s 10 games. Plus the three or four games to finish off the league. “We’re actually not even halfway through [the season]. And it’s April.” He believes that the lack of matches, in addition to the way the fixtures are being announced, is putting a strain on players and clubs across the board. “The fixtures come out on a Tuesday night. We’ve lads working in bars and shops, same as every club, and they’re trying to do rosters and get time off. And they only find out if they’re playing on Tuesday night or Wednesday morning? “The fixtures came out last night (Tuesday) and there are six matches in eight divisions. Some teams are just dictating to the Kerry District League when they want to play and that’s the bottom line. They can play when they want. GAA fixtures can dictate things as well. It doesn’t make sense. “It’s down to the KDL to run the league properly. Every other league can do it. I just don’t know why they can’t follow the formats of the other counties. Limerick, Tipperary, all the leagues, they’re at the semi-final or final stages of the cups, and a lot of them have the

league champions decided already. If not, it’ll be done in the next few weeks. All seasons will be finished by May.” Celtic have dominated the KDL in recent years and after last weekend’s 4-1 win over Killarney Athletic, they are currently 13 points clear at the top of the Premier A table. Nevertheless, Spillane confirmed that he will be stepping down at the end of the season. “I handed in my notice a few months ago. I know the Listowel manager left as well. We had a Munster Cup and a few big friendlies after Christmas. Only for that, I’d be gone too. No one’s going to commit time to this. And that’s what’s going to happen if it continues. “Teams are struggling to get numbers for training. We’ve a Munster game coming up and we trained last week and we’re struggling for numbers. Players are sick of it.”

VILLA Spillane is expecting a tough test from Villa FC on Sunday. The Waterford side are still active in the FAI Junior Cup and have yet to be defeated this season in all competitions. Celtic have lost just one game – coincidentally against Villa in the FAI. “Villa are very strong,” Spillane said. “The big thing about them is that they’re well coached, and they play 3-5-2. They play the system well. In terms of players, we’d match up evenly enough. We lost 2-1 when we played them but it was a 50-50 game. “Hopefully with home advantage and a good home crowd, we might be able to turn it around. That could make the difference. It should make for a great match.”

More gold for Leahy Killarney sprinter Sarah Leahy carried her fine indoor form into last weekend’s Irish Universities Athletics Track and Field Championships, which were held at Carlow IT. After easing through the semis on Friday, the University of LImerick student secured gold in both the 100m and 200m events on Saturday – setting two UL records in the process. Her times in the 100 and in the 200 are the fastest ever posted by a student of the famed Limerick college. Not content with these achievements, Leahy went on to claim bronze as part of the 4x100m relay team alongside Blaithin Ní Chiarain, Alana Ryan and Kellie Bester. Sarah and her teammates’ time in this race was also an all-time best for UL. The Kerry woman was also convinced to compete in the 4x400m relay. Despite being unfamiliar with the event, Leahy helped UL to a fourth place finish. Speaking to the Killarney Advertiser, Leahy said she was pleased with how she performed, but she still believes that she can go even faster. “On the first day, conditions were terrible - thunder and lighting, hailstone, wind and rain,” the Killarney Valley AC athlete explained. “So the competition on Friday was tough for everybody, including the spectators. Saturday was the opposite and if I did everything right and the body was feeling good, I knew I should do well. “Also the encouragement from my boyfriend Daniel, who expects nothing but the best from me, is always needed going into a big race day, along with the support of my mom and dad who also travelled to Carlow to see me compete. “The 100m went better than I hoped. I got a new PB of 11.67 and let out a little happy cheer when I crossed the line and saw the time. “Next was the 200m final. I got out well and landed a new outdoor 200m

PB of 24.18. Again, I was very happy, but I know I can run even faster in the 200m this season. As always, there’s lots to improve upon and I'm very excited for the upcoming outdoor season.” Leahy wasn’t the only Kerry athlete to catch the eye. Niamh O’Mahony of An Riocht and UCC was also a double medallist. On Friday she took home a bronze in the 5k in a time of 17:48:06 and on Saturday she won the 3k with 10 seconds to spare. Oisín Spillane, representing Tralee Harriers and UL, returned to his roots and took on the barriers in the 3k Steeplechase. Just behind the leading pack for the majority of the race, he bided his time, took advantage of a slowing pace to pull away on the back straight and take the win in a time of 9:16:71. Clubmate Cillian Griffin, competing for host college Carlow IT, took on the 100m and long jump. Having won his 100m heat comfortably on Friday he was straight into the long jump. The lead changed hands several times throughout the event and going into the last round there was a matter of centimetres between the top three. Cillian finished in a bronze medal position with a jump of 6.76m – a Carlow IT record. Unfortunately, a hamstring strain caused him to pull back in the 100m semi-final and he missed a spot in the final. Other Kerry athletes in attendance were Tralee Harriers Leanne Cronin in the discus for DCU and Basit Oyebanji in the 100m for UCC. Killarney Valley’s Darragh O’Leary competed in the 3k steeplechase for UL and former St Brendan’s athlete and UL student, Aaron Malik, took part in the combined events.

Seán Murphy and his team are delighted to announce that the club’s Annual Golf Classic is back with a bang on Friday, May 6. The event will be staged at one of Ireland's most picturesque courses, the famed but equally fair O'Mahony's Point. It’s the kind of course that any golfer can enjoy regardless of experience or skill levels. SPORT NOTES

Kerry LGFA WALK: Big Dave’s 60th Memorial Walk. David previously managed Inbhear Scéine Gaels and Kerry ladies football teams. To honour his memory the family are organising a memorial walk on April 16 at 2.30pm. On the day the walk will start at Kenmare Pier taking in Tubrib Loop and finishing in Kenmare Town. Refreshments will be served in the Wander Inn after the walk. Killarney Legion GAA LADIES UPDATE: Our ladies teams had mixed results this week. The U12s welcomed Rathmore to Direen last Wednesday evening but found the Sliabh Luachra outfit an able opponent and de-

spite hitting a hat-trick of goals they still found themselves on the wrong end of the scoreline. The Under 14 Green team made it four wins from four on a blustery evening in Farranfore last Tuesday. Despite playing against the elements they went in ahead at halftime and consolidated that position in the second period and now sit top of the table with three rounds left to play. On Sunday they travelled to Moyvane for Round 5 and short a few regulars they found Moyvane a bridge too far in their bid to maintain their unbeaten run. They are however still in a strong position in the Division. The Under 16s remain unbeaten in their Division following their latest win over Laune Rangers in Direen during the week. A strong first half laid the foundation for a 6-12 to 2-7 win over the Launesiders. The minor ladies, buoyant from a great win over Listowel in Round 1, ran into a bang in form MKL Gaels outfit on Friday evening in a baltic Direen. Trailing by 12 at half time they soon cut the deficit to 5 but the Mid Kerry girls put on the afterburners and pushed on again. They travel to Na Gaeil this Friday looking to bounce back. The senior ladies kicked off their Donal Curtin Division 2 campaign at home to Austin Stacks on Sunday. In a free flowing high scoring affair they just came up short in the end losing out on a 6-7 to 3-11 scoreline.

Well done to Dr Crokes U15 players Cian Mulcahy, Adam Byrne and Kacper Robak who were on the Kerry South U15 team who played Kildare well done boys. Brian O’Connor was on Kerry minor hurling team that was defeated by Cork. Charlie Keating played with Kerry U20s who lost to Tipperary. CO LEAGUE: Dr Crokes 1-14 Dingle 1-14. A late flurry of points from the visitors gave them a share of the spoils in a keenly contested game. Dingle opened the scoring in the third minute with Brian O’Connor point quickly replied with points from Miceal Burns and Brian Looney. Conor Geaney levelled matters in 8th minute. Three Crokes points from Burns, Looney and Jordan Kiely (free) saw them lead 0-5 to 0-2 at end of the first quarter. Further points by Daithi Casey, B Looney and Shane Murphy (45) with Dingle scores coming from Niall Geaney and Conor Geaney saw Crokes lead at half-time 0-8 to 0-5. On the resumption Niall Geaney

narrowed the gap with a point. Harry Potts with a goal stretched the Crokes advantage. A Conor Geaney point and a Matthew Flaherty goal left the minimum between sides after 8 minutes. Mark O’Shea and Barry O'Sullivan swapped points. Mickie Casey, Jordan Kiely and Chris Doncel pointed for Crokes with O'Sullivan, Flaherty and Niall Geaney replying for Dingle. Two Shane Murphy points (45) stretched our advantage but three late Dingle points from George Durrant and the Geaneys from frees gave them parity. A good result and great to see so many young players getting game time.

Fossa GAA KERRY LADIES: Congratulations to the Kerry senior ladies on their promotion to Division 1 especially the Fossa ladies Erica McGlynn and Anna Clifford. SENIOR MEN: County League Div 4 Rd 3 - Fossa 2-15 Ardfert 3-7. Great win by our seniors. 3 from 3. Division 6A Round 3 - Fossa 1-8 Milltown/Castlemaine 3-12. Fossa B lost their first game of the season to a very strong Milltown/Castlemaine team. Fossa goal scored by Mike O'Keeffe SENIOR LADIES: A great win for our senior ladies. Donal Curtin Cup Div 3 - Fossa 4-9 Laune Rangers 2-6. U16 GIRLS: Fossa 5-3 Glenflesk 5-17. U13 BOYS: Fossa U13 A team suffered their first defeat of the campaign away to Cordal. It took 10 minutes before either team registered a score and they went in at the break 1-2 to 0-1 down. The second half was more open as both teams adjusted to the conditions. Both goalkeepers made some great saves but there was little Dara Whelton in the Fossa goal could do with two early Cordal goals. Charlie Griffin and Mikey Moroney fought valiantly as the boys closed the gap to 4 points through goals by Thomas Shaughnessy and Brian Horgan, before Cordal scored a fourth goal to leave the final score at 4-4 to 2-3. Fossa Bs travelled to Kenmare for the third round of County League Phase 1. Despite Fossa having the wind in the first half, Kenmare managed to build up a healthy lead with some well worked goals. Half time score was, 5-3 to 1-5. In an entertaining second half, despite Fossa giving it everything, Kenmare were able to maintain the gap. The game finishing 5-10 to 3-6. Special thanks as well to U11s who travelled this evening to support.
