15.12.17 Eve Kelliher takes a look at the news that’s been getting Killarney and Kerry talking

Positive Response To Our Áras Phádraig Design WELL, our series on innovative parking solutions has most certainly sparked debate across Killarney. Last week when we unveiled an artist’s impression of what a multi-storey car parking facility would look like on Lewis Road, it garnered an overwhelmingly positive response. This idea would tie in with the civic amenity proposals for the former Aras Phádraig site and incorporates the Lewis Road

Anniversary

car and coach park. Comments ranged from “This would be absolutely brilliant for Killarney” to “looks amazing” and “awesome!”. Another reader noted: “Brilliant – best site for a car park without impeding the traffic of Killarney.”But yet another member of the public raised concerns about giving a “city look” to the town. “Killarney is a town and we must remember that,” according to the reader who added “we al-

ready have a cinema and shopping malls which is more than enough”. Lastly, another respondent agreed that “theoretically, more parking will solve traffic problems in Killarney, but it may solve parking, not traffic, the roads into and out of town are too narrow, there is already gridlock at school times, and during the summer all day”. The debate rages on. Let us know what you think by emailing newsdesk@ killarneyadvertiser.ie

Landmark Celebration At The Friary EVERY good wish to Killarney’s community of Franciscan Friars who celebrated their 150th anniversary in town on Friday. The Bishop of Kerry Ray Browne was the chief celebrant at the Mass in the Friary church on the Feast of the Immaculate Conception. The foundation stone for the church and Friary was taken from Muckross Abbey and brought through the streets of Killarney to Fair Hill in 1864. The Friary Guardian, Fr Liam McCarthy, OFM, also addressed the congregation which included friends of the Friary, priests, deacons, Sisters from the Presentation and Mercy convents, Reverend Simon Lumby of the Church of Ire-

land, Canon Brian Lougheed, Killarney Municipal District Mayor Niall Kelleher and Sergeant Dermot O’Connell of Killarney Gardaí. • See the Killarney Historical Calendar for more on our local history….

Opinion Divided On Killarney Cultural Centre

A PROPOSED arts centre at the Killarney Cultural Centre on East Avenue Road has divided opinion in town. Kerry County Council unveiled plans for an arts centre that considers not just the building space but the complete area surrounding it. “The aim is to make the new arts centre a flexible and adaptable space both internally and in particular outside. We proposed to re-design the front façade,

with a metal structure with black mirror cladding which reflects the trees at the back of the auditorium area,” stated the council. Others works to the building will include alterations to the existing internal layout and re-roofing the building. The outdoor area will be covered with a retractable canopy and will be a flexible area that will seat an audience which can view a show on the internal stage or

an external stage. But some believe such a plan should not be carried out until the Aras Phádraig site is completed. “In my opinion we should not go next or near the Cultural Centre until the Aras Phádraig site is done,” said Cllr Donal

Grady. “The money should be ploughed into the Aras Phádraig.” Once the public consultation phase has concluded and the planning process is complete, it is planned that construction work would commence by June of next year.

Lack of Consultation on Asylum Seeker Plan Sparks Criticism ‘Linden House Should Be Used To House The Homeless’

THE use of a former hotel in Killarney to house 55 asylum seeksers has sparked concerns at a lack of consultation The Department of Justice has confirmed Linden House, New Road, which was formerly used as a direct provision centre, has been refurbished and will become home to people currently in the asylum and refugee process. The Department says that following a notable increase in applications for International Protection, it has concluded discussions with the owners of Linden House in Killarney to resume services as an accommodation centre for approximately 55 persons currently in the protection process. It declined to comment on the breakdown of age, gender or country of origin of those that will

be accommodated in Killarney. Kerry Independent TD Michael Healy-Rae said he believed the group of 55 comprises “all males of mixed nationality who have made applications for international protection”. He told Killarney Advertiser: “I believe the local authority and local community should have been consulted on this important matter as to who these people are, where they are coming from and what is the expected plan for longterm housing, as it seems like a large concentration of people in the one location. I share the concerns of the people who have been in contact with me about this matter.” Deputy Healy-Rae added: “As these people will only be housed in temporary accommodation, I

believe that a number of these people may seek social housing in time, which would be only putting increased pressure on an already large waiting list for housing in Killarney and Kerry.” Meanwhile, the Irish Immigrant Support Centre, Nasc, says the lack of consultation is a concern and that lessons haven’t been learned from the resettlement of asylum seekers in Roscommon. New Road is the location of two primary schools and two second-level schools and some parents have also voiced concern. Damian O’Callaghan, parent of a student attending Killarney Community College, said: “There should have been more consultation. This is a densely populated road and this seems to have been stealthily done.”

JUST days ahead of the confirmation that Linden House would be used as an accommodation centre for asylum seekers, Kerry County Council member Donal Grady had called for the property to open its doors to homeless people in Killarney. Speaking to Killarney Advertiser on Tuesday, the former mayor of Killarney said: “The council should open up Linden House on New Road to homeless people and not send these people to Tralee. “There are at least 25 homeless people in Killarney at the moment and people who are homeless in this town continue to be sent to Tralee for accommodation. “We are miles behind other counties when it comes to catering for homeless people.” Linden House, he added, was a property “lying idle”, he added. “Shame on us for not doing something,” he said. “People are sleeping rough or are being sent to Tralee.” Addressing the December meeting of Kerry County Council on Monday, Cllr Grady urged the council to look at ways to improve facilities for homeless people. Kerry County Council stated it had nine beds block-booked in a facility in Killarney available for homeless clients. There are also other beds in the same facility, should they required, for family units.

Kerry Stars Get Set To Dazzle Lions Have Recipe For Success Fundraiser

STARS will be out in force in The Malton Hotel tomorrow. Kerry Stars athlete Emma Doolan will be MC along with Brendan Fuller who will be introduced by another athlete, Martina McCarthy. THE Killarney Lions Club is currently running its annual Christmas food appeal fundraiser, lending a much-needed helping hand to the less fortunate in the community. Kerry footballer David Moran launched the 2017 food drive, with Killarney Lions Club President Anthony Walsh along with sponsors Robert Stack (Tricel) and Mark Pender (AGS). “The Killarney Lions collect money to purchase nutritional foods and then assemble the hampers before delivering them to Killarney’s most needy families,” said the club president. “Even the hamper boxes were donated by Atlas Global Solutions (AGS Packaging). With a thoroughly vetted list, the Lions

delivered 104 hampers in 2016 and hope to do a similar amount this year in 2017.” The Lions Club will be collecting at Daly’s SuperValu, Killarney, on Friday, December 22, and will welcome any donations to help make a big difference to someone’s Christmas.

Applause For Woman Of The Year Eileen

Cash And Tobacco Seized In Killarney Raid FOUR-AND-A-HALF kilos of tobacco and €2,000 in cash have been seized at a house in Killarney. The discovery, which was carried out with the help of detector dog Marley, was a follow-up search after Revenue officers and Gardaí seized 20,000 cigarettes and one-and-a-half kilos of tobacco in a car at Watergrasshill, Co Cork. The smuggled cigarettes, branded “Excellence”, and the tobacco, branded “Flandria”, have a combined retail value of more than €14,000, representing a potential loss to the Exchequer of more than €11,200. A Croatian man in his 30s and an Irish female in her 40s were questioned and a file is being prepared for the DPP.

Eileen Switzer receives the Woman of the Year award from Emer Moynihan, Clair Bowler and Teresa Irwin.

CONGRATULATIONS to Eileen Switzer who took a very well deserved bow when she received the Woman of the Year Award from the Killarney Soroptimists. Eileen was guest of honour at the club’s Christmas party in The Gleneagle Hotel on Tuesday where she was presented with the award by Killarney Soroptimists president Emer Moynihan, Clair Bowler and national Soroptimists president Teresa Irwin. In her address to the gathering, Maura Fitzgerald highlighted Eileen’s supreme generosity and tireless volunteering for the community of Killarney. “Eileen personifies the word community with her commitment to the many organisations she has been involved with over her lifetime,” said Maura. The eternally youthful mother and grandmother has been a

mentor and friend to generations of young people in Killarney through her involvement in everything from Community Games to St Mary’s Parish Hall activities and more. “The greatest gift one can give a person is time and Eileen has surpassed all generosity in this area,” added Maura. Modest to the core, Eileen said volunteering something she regards as “part of my life”. “It keeps you young!” she told Killarney Advertiser. The hugely popular Killarney lady previously won national Women in Sport award and Killarney Mayor’s Award. Eileen continues to volunteer at St Mary’s Parish Hall, where she has run the juvenile badminton club for almost 40 years. “Eileen could be known as Mrs Parish Hall!” said Maura. “Along with her fellow volunteer Sean

O’Sullivan she supervises the bookings for the hall and she is known by people using the hall to have a very generous heart.” Eileen is also very much involved with Deerpark Pitch and Putt Club, where she is lady captain, and Ross Golf Club, where she served as a lady captain in the past. A keen promoter of the Killarney Microtrack project, Eileen also spearheads activities with the Kerry Parents & Friends group. Eileen and her husband Frank were involved in Community Games in Killarney North and beyond for over 40 years. “They encouraged and coached hundreds of children to great success but most of all gave these young people a love of a variety of sports,” added Maura. Eileen also served on the county executive and made sure the voice of Killarney Community Games was heard nationally.

Golden Moment For Youth Service THERE were celebrations for the Kerry Diocesan Youth Service as it received the coveted Gold Standard Health Quality Mark (HQM) from the National Youth Council of Ireland (NYCI). The Kerry Diocesan Youth Service (KDYS) was awarded HQM Mark in recognition of its work on health promotion for young people in the Kerry area, at a special event held in KDYS Youth Centre in Killarney. “This award is a testament to the hard work and dedication of all at KDYS. They are committed to the highest quality standards in health promotion and it is clear that ensuring a healthy and safe place for young people and staff is a key priority here.” said Ailish O’Neill, National Youth Health Programme

Manager at the NYCI. “Congratulations are in order to the staff and volunteers of the service, in particular Rena Powell, KDYS Health Promotion Officer, who guided the organisation through the process to ensure that their work is in line with national and international best practice in the area of Youth Health Promotion.” The HQM is the recognised quality assurance mark for health promotion in youth work in Ireland. It is a health promotion initiative developed by the National Youth Health Programme to enhance best practice in youth organisations. The National Youth Health Programme is a partnership between NYCI, the Health Service Executive and the Department of Children and Youth Affairs.

Anne Lucey gives her take on happenings in Killarney, Kerry and beyond in her monthly column

Killarney House €10M Revamp Was Worth Every Penny WHAT a nice place to go to work! It cost ten million euro to revamp, but it’s worth every penny: Killarney House was the venue for two working occasions over the past week, both of them county council related. The first was the launch of the “Kerry brand” – more about that later. The second was the December meeting of the county council on its annual Christmas progress to the home place of the mayor. Mayor John Sheahan (the correct term is cathaoirleach, but who calls their first citizen his chairness?) and his colleagues in Fine Gael were naturally enough on high doh (Maura HealyRae said they were like “the Spinnies” of the Mario Rosenstock sketch). While nobody mentioned him, it was the FG former minister Jimmy Deenihan who secured the funds at a time when the country was on its knees, for the crumbling building that had become a venue for rough sleepers. If memory serves, one of the most vocal on the matter was the former councillor Niall “Botty” O’Callaghan in the old town council. Councillors of all shades on the day paid themselves great tribute, giving themselves the fullest credit for the restoration.

“Notice of motion after notice of motion” had been placed on the agenda of the town council, Cllr Gleeson crowed. However no more than Jimmy Deenihan – and let’s give credit where it is due, Senator Paul Coghlan too – did anyone mention the media. Killarney House Is A People’s Venue

Tourism Brand Launched

SPEAKING of tourism: a new tourism brand was launched by the council also at Killarney House. The logo evokes the colours of a faded Kerry jersey and it is to be hoped it is not symbolic of faded glory, at least where football is concerned! The development of the brand, by a Dublin-based design company (I am sure there is no co-incidence in the fading colours!) which tendered for it cost “just under” €40,000, I am told. The logo is topped by four mountain peaks which are perhaps reminiscent of the crowns of the Kingdom! It has the theme ‘Kerry– Your Natural Escape’ – the Destination Kerry brand includes icons, imagery and messaging. There was a lot of consultation one of the key speakers and most interesting on the day was hotelier Sean O’Driscoll. He is now group manager with

Inua which includes hotels around the country well as Killarney’s Muckross Park. A countywide brand is needed in the on line age, which is increasingly focused on the outdoors, he said. The importance of tourism “really hit home during the recession years”, said Sean. A coherent tourism brand for Kerry was necessary in a competitive online environment, where other regions were watching and following Kerry’s lead role, he said. “How people choose where to go on holidays has changed dramatically in the last 25 years – it is hard to believe booking.com is only 21 years in existence, Google is 19 years and Trip Advisor has only been here for 17 years,” he said. In a hotel survey in 2017, some 42 per cent of visitors to the southwest book directly on line, it was found.

Congratulations ON A cheerful note: Killarney Chamber of Tourism & Commerce has to be congratulated. This year’s Santa Claus is breaking all records, I am told. The lights are fantastic. The sleigh trips magical, the crib at St Mary’s Church of Ireland is just gorgeous and the whole town should take a bow. Now, here’s an idea for a brand: Klassy Killarney or Killarney is Klass… Plenty to mull over the festive season! Happy Christmas to everyone.

THE temperatures may have been Baltic but a warmth of spirit surged right through Killarney from around 5.30pm onwards last Saturday as eager families began to line the streets for the Christmas in Killarney Magic Parade. And I know Killarney has had a festive facelift thanks to the spectacular lighting and decorations but it’s funny just how complete that transformation is…. I was strolling from New Street towards the centre of town to meet friends who travel especially from Dunmanway every year to enjoy as many Christmas in Killarney Magic parades as they possibly can. As we deliberated over the phone where to meet among the crowds, photogra-

pher Valerie O’Sullivan, who was poised to capture the parade on camera, overheard and gave me a piece of advice: “Just say you’ll meet her at Santa’s sleigh!” Problem solved! You see, landmarks such as the sleigh on Main Street have become key to navigating our streetscape during December. It’s like being on the set of a fantastic festive movie – and all credit to everyone involved, from the friendly stewards to the participants, Gardaí and organising committee. Make sure to catch the other parades, tomorrow, or December 23 and 31 at 6pm. The parade route is taking in Beech Road, Mission Road, East Avenue Road, College Street, Plunkett Street, Main Street and New Street.

Sunshine Celebration For Laura & Darran

GETTING up for a 6.45am start is hard, but not as hard as broadcasting for 28 hours in a row! But that’s what Fully Charged (Spin South West breakfast show) presenters Ed Roche and Meghann Scully did yesterday to raise awareness and much-needed funds for Focus Ireland. The plight of homeless families and children is a cause that is close to everyone’s heart the Spin South West crew went live for 28 hours in a pop-up studio straight through to the end of their show today, Friday morning, at 10.45am. All information re donating is on spinsouthwest.com/focus28hourbroadcast.

Footpath Improvements THE poor condition of many footpaths in the Killarney town area and in some local housing estates has been highlighted. Councillor Michael Gleeson has allocated money for improvement in the Kilcoolaght area (€4000); Ross Road (€4000); and Ardshanavooly Estate (€5,900). “These works on completion will ensure safer conditions for many users particularly wheelchair users, the visually impaired and older people,” said Cllr Gleeson. “In the medium term, however, there is an urgent need for the upgrading of many footpaths and for stricter enforcement of the prevention of illegal parking on them. Unless and until the law is observed there is little point in spending large sums of money improving footpaths.”

Bach & Handel Centre Stage In Friary THE historic first performance in Kerry of excerpts from Bach’s Christmas Oratorio will take place in the Franciscan Friary, Killarney, next Wednesday, December 20, at 8pm. Excerpts from Handel’s Messiah will also be included in the performance. The Christmas Oratorio is in fact comprised of six shorter works each of which was originally intended to be performed in churches in Leipzig on a different day during the Christmas season in 1734. Movements from each of the six cantatas have been chosen for this performance. “Handel was invited to Dublin, the British empire’s second city at that time, by the Lord Lieutenant to give a series of concerts,” said conductor Aidan O’Carroll. “While in Dublin he set about writing the Messiah in the form of an oratorio –

an un-staged opera.” Legend has it that the work was written in a fever of invention in a mere 19 days. Its premiere was on April 13, 1742, in Neil’s Music Hall, Fishamble Lane, Dublin, close to Christ Church. Its success was immediate. Due to public demand for tickets a large number of extra performances had to be arranged. Gentlemen were requested in the broadsheets of the time to “leave off their swords” and ladies their hoops

so that the maximum number of places might be created. Soloists Aisling O’Carroll, Sarah-Ellen Murphy, Ryan Morgan and Cormac Lawlor will be joined by the Kerry Chamber Choir and Orchestra under the direction of Aidan O’Carroll. To encourage younger people to attend, children go free accompanied by an adult. Tickets are available at the Friary office 064-6631334 or from Kerry School of Music on 066-7120077.

Land Rover Restoration Projection A LAND ROVER jeep is to be restored by the Killarney Valley Classic & Vintage Club as its 2018 charity project. The jeep has been off the road for the last number of years and has only 82,000 miles on the clock! It was donated by Con Ahern from Cork. Club chairman Tom Leslie said: “We are delighted that our next restoration project has begun and would like to thank Con Ahern for travelling to Killarney to hand over the keys. “The club are really looking forward to restoring same and we would be delighted if anyone who would like to get involved and help out with this charity project to get in touch. Any help, big or small, will be greatly appreciated. After the club’s very successful MF135 tractor restoration project which we recently completed, we are delighted to be provided with the use

of a shed again by Kerry Mental Health Association and the use of the facilities at Killarney Men’s Shed.” The club plans on meeting every Thursday night at Killarney Men’s Shed from 7pm-9pm and Tom can be contacted on 0872383809 for any further information.

A Weekly Round-Up Of News + Views From Kerry And Around

Inquest Rules Unlawful Branding The County: Death Of Baby Shouldn’t We Be Keeping Jobs In Kerry?

News

IT WAS a black day for Killarney when a mother’s heartbreak brought the town to a standstill after 11-month-old Karol Rozycki was found dead in his home on March 6, 2016. This week, over a year and a half after the tragedy, which occurred on Mother’s Day, a verdict of unlawful death was returned at the inquest into the death of Karol Rozycki in his parents’ bedroom in an apartment in Killarney. The inquest into the death of the baby boy heard the child’s father, who took his own life, had been “jealous” of him, reports Anne Lucey in the Irish Times. He was found alongside his severely injured father, 32-year-old Andrzej Piolunowicz, shortly before 6pm at Park Place Apartments, Killarney, in a locked bedroom, added the report. Both were lying on the bed. Mr Piolunowicz was still breathing. No medical cause of death could be identified in the case of baby Karol, State Pathologist Dr Margot Bolster said, reports the Irish Times. Mr Piolunowicz died four days later at Cork University Hospital, due to self-inflicted wounds. The jury

returned a verdict of suicide in his case. The child’s mother, Anna Rozycka, originally from Cieszyn in eastern Poland, began a relationship with Mr Piolunowicz in June 2014. Two months later she was pregnant. They decided to set up home together, but after two weeks together the relationship ended. She returned to Poland where Karol was born in April 2015, she said in her deposition read by Supt Flor Murphy. Back in Ireland in July 2015 she resumed contact with her child’s father and in February 2016 they once more set up home together. However, matters did not work out. On the night of March 5, she told Mr Piolunowicz that, for her, “Karol was always going to come first,” and she did not see a future for them together. She felt he was jealous of Karol and of the fact she could provide for him. “I told him that Karol was my world. That he was the most important person in my life and always would be,” she said. USA Today Editorial Says Trump ‘Unfit To Clean Obama’s Toilet’ THE editorial board of USA Today this week memorably said President Donald Trump is “unfit to clean the toilets” in Barack Obama’s library or shine George W Bush’s shoes. The editorial comes after Mr Trump claimed a female senator “would do anything” for campaign cash – words which some regarded as sexual innuendo. “Rock bottom is no impediment for a president who can always find room for a new low,” USA Today noted. The newspaper is not known for publishing such blistering editorials. One of the nation’s highest-circulated newspapers, it usually includes an “opposing view” col-

Never fails to entertain

umn with each opinion piece. However, during the 2016 election, the newspaper broke its tradition of not endorsing a presidential candidate by publishing an editorial outlining why, it argued, Mr Trump was “unfit for the presidency”. Although USA Today did not endorse his challenger Hillary Clinton, it told their readers to vote “just not for Donald Trump”. Its latest editorial came a day after Mr Trump tweeted that New York Senator Kirsten Gillibrand had “come to my office ‘begging’ for campaign contributions not so long ago (and would do anything for them)”. Mrs Gillibrand earlier this week called on Mr Trump to resign over allegations of sexual harassment by multiple women.

THE new destination brand aimed at promoting and marketing the county has cost Kerry County Council €40,000 to develop. Design Works, a Dublin-based design company, was awarded the tender to develop the brand. This company was also responsible for the ‘Ireland’s Ancient East’ brand. But it’s got people thinking on two fronts – there are many talented designers and design companies in this county so should such jobs be kept in Kerry? Secondly, €40,000 seems pretty steep – are we definitely getting bang for our buck? Kerry County

IT’S NOT quite in a galaxy far, far away, but Tourism Ireland has sent a billboard 33km above planet Earth to promote the scenic locations where parts of the movie The Last Jedi were shot. The ad, which was launched starbound with the help of a weather balloon, features Sceilg Mhichíl. Demand for access to the tourist spot has been unprecedented since filming of Star Wars movie episodes in recent years on

Council published a detailed design brief for the brand and the contract went through the procurement process, with four companies tendering for the work. Over the past year and a half, Design Works consulted industry leaders and the tourism sector in Kerry, interviewed key figures in the tourism and hospitality sectors, and did market research to test the brand. The development of a strong brand identity for Kerry is an objective of the County Kerry Tourism Strategy and Action Plan. But wouldn’t it be even more positive if the message came from a Kerry company?

Tourism Ireland has proclaimed the billboard as the first ever tourist campaign in space. The out-of-this-world billboard reached a peak altitude of 33,390m before both it and the balloon floated back down to Earth.

Ireland’s Answer To Alcatraz Wins World Travel Award A FORMER prison and fort finished ahead of such renowned landmarks as the Great Wall of China and Mount Kilimanjaro at the World Travel Awards. Spike Island in Cork Harbour won Europe’s Leading Tourist Attraction and scooped second place in the World’s Leading Attraction category, being pipped only by the historic Inca citadel of Machu Picchu in Peru. This accolade, presented at a gala ceremony held in Vietnam, comes just months after Spike Island was named Europe’s Leading Tourist Attraction.

The historic prison and fort is being developed as a tourist attraction by Cork County Council and Cork County CEO Tim Lucey said achieving such an impressive result will help Spike Island play a major part in developing tourism in Cork in the years ahead. A working prison up until 2004, responsibility for the island was handed over to Cork County Council in 2010 and following an investment of over €6 million by the Council and Fáilte Ireland, the island reopened in June 2016 as a tourist attraction.

Here’s What People Were Googling In 2017 IT’S a metric that gives a unique snapshot of our society and Google’s annual. “Year in Search” delivered as always this week. More than any of the other yearend download and streaming roundups, Google’s offers an insight into what had us stumped and what made our imagination take flight in a pretty eventful 12 months. In the United States, the top overall searches ran the gamut from natural phenomenon, to sports, to human tragedy, to the sexual misconduct allegations that have erupted across a range of industries in recent times. Hurricanes Irma and Harvey took the first and eighth spots in the Top 10, and August’s muchhyped solar eclipse came in at No. 7. The October shooting in Las Vegas that ended in 59 deaths was the No. 5 search. Musician Tom Petty was both the top search in celebrity deaths and No. 3 overall, while former.

The Super Bowl and the Mayweather/McGregor fight landed at four and five, respectively, and the fidget spinners that briefly caught our short attention spans this year hit No. 10. Former NBC anchor Matt Lauer hit No. 2 overall and was the top person search in general. A number of other subjects of sexual misconduct allegations also made the Top 10 people list, including Harvey Weinstein, Kevin Spacey and Bill O’Reilly. Apple had the strongest showing in Consumer Tech, with the iPhone 8, iPhone X, iPhone 8 Plus and Apple Watch 3 scoring spots one, two, six and nine. Nintendo and Samsung also had strong showings with the Nintendo Switch, Samsung Galaxy S8, Super NES Classic and Samsung Galaxy Note 8 making the Top 10 in that category. People were also looking for ways to make their own eclipse glasses, fidget spinners and slime.

London Euston Station To Become A Homeless Shelter On Christmas Day

Childminder Admits Assault But Avoids Conviction A CHILDMINDER, who pleaded guilty to a charge of assaulting an 18-month-old child in her care, is to avoid conviction, reports RTE. The case is to be struck out on payment of €1,000 to the court poor box. The woman has already paid €6,000 in compensation, as ordered by the court. However, sources close to the child’s parents say it was never about money and they are extremely disappointed with the outcome, added the report. They had pursued the matter in the first place for the safety of theirs and other children. The parents were only informed of the outcome on Monday - a week after the order for the case to be struck out was handed down. It was extremely difficult for the child’s mother to give a statement in the first place as there was friendship and other ties involved, added the report. Last September the District Court in Killarney was told how a postwoman doing her rounds near Killarney heard “terrible

screams” and the childminder seemed to be “biting” the face of the child she held pinned against a wall. The postwoman banged on the door and the childminder answered it with the child in her arms. She told the postwoman that she could not get the child to stop crying. The postwoman rang the child’s mother, who left work and took the child to the doctor. Medical reports handed into court found that the child’s face was bruised but there were no facial bite marks. The court also heard that this was a once-off incident and the childminder had no previous convictions. The woman who had been minding the child for over a year pleaded guilty to willfully assaulting a child in her care in a manner likely to cause injury to the child’s health or seriously affect its wellbeing. Padraig O’Connell, solicitor for the childminder, said the woman had children of her own and there were no issues with her care of them. He said there had been total co-operation, no previous conviction and “significant remorse”.

Legal ‘Love Actually’ TRAINS will have a day off as London Euston Station will be turned into a homeless shelter this Christmas Day. The station will open its doors to 200 homeless people on Christmas Day while the transport hub is shut to commuters. With no trains running from Euston until after December 26, the

concourse will be covered with decorations as 30 volunteers from Network Rail help run the event. They will work alongside volunteers from homelessness charity St Mungo’s and Streets Kitchen, which provides meals for 1,000 people on the streets every week.

AN IRISH judge has been praised online for excusing a 54-year-old man from jury duty after he revealed he had planned a long weekend away with his partner and it was his “first time in love”. Journalist Sarah Jane Murphy relayed the exchange, which took place at a Dublin court on Monday, to her followers on Twitter and it has gone viral with almost 2,000 retweets. It reads: “Man: I can’t serve; I’m away for weekend. Judge: We don’t sit at weekends. Man: I’m away till Monday. I’m 54, a bachelor & it’s my 1st time in love.

Judge: Then you GO and you GO with my blessing. It was truly an epic moment”. Sarah-Jane reveals that the man spoke hesitantly at first but then with more confidence when he delivered his reason for not being able to serve. “The judge broke into a broad smile and the man walked away grinning,” she revealed in the Irish Independent. “The woman beside me turned to me and said, ‘Did I imagine that?’” Twitter users have been commenting that the exchange is like a scene from Richard Curtis’ romantic comedy Love Actually.

Rohingya Crisis Escalates OVER 626,000 Rohingya people have crossed into Bangladesh from Myanmar since early August 2017. These people are fleeing violence in Rakhine State where security forces are “clearing out terrorists”. The majority of the Rohingya are Muslims but they are not recognised as citizens in Myanmar and are therefore considered a “stateless” people. This is the third major movement of Rohingya into Bangladesh as a result of violence. The first happened in the mid-1970s. The second in 1992 when I was in Cox’s Bazar at the time to witness these terrified people seeking refuge in Bangladesh. The third major movement is the current crisis which has escalated since mid-August 2017. On each of the previous occasions of movement of the Rohingya, they were encouraged to return to Myanmarwhich many of them they did, only for

them or their children to have to flee again. The Governments of Bangladesh and Myanmar have already agreed that the Rohingya should return to Myanmar on a “voluntary” basis as reported on November 23. However, until their citizenship is recognised and the systematic discrimination stops there is little point in them returning to Myanmar. Plan International is calling on the international community to prioritise the needs of vulnerable Rohingya children arriving in Bangladesh. Adolescent girls in particular must be protected, as they are one of the groups most at-risk of gender-based violence within the camps. THE Kerry Branch of the Psychiatric Nurses Association has written to the Minister for Health, Simon Harris, to highlight a number of issues of concern in relation to service delivery and developments within Kerry Mental Health Services including Deer Lodge itself. Deer Lodge, the new 40-bed €13.5m unit was officially opened on December 4, having been completed in 2015 and opened in July of 2017. The 40-bed unit was recently the subject of a €22,000 remedial works when radon levels were found to be up to four times greater than the recommended acceptable levels for residential dwellings. Further testing in the coming months will determine if radon levels have successfully been reduced. As outlined in A Vision for Change, (AVFC 2006) the Psychiatric Nurses Association had campaigned for the inclusion of crisis intervention beds and respite care beds to be in part of the service delivery model available within Deer Lodge. Eleven years after AVRC Kerry mental health services still have no crisis intervention or respite care beds. As part of the recovery and rehabilitation model of care outlined in AVRC, the PNA had campaigned for the inclusion of a higher skill therapeutic grades within Deer Lodge including clinical nurse specialists to initiate, lead and implement a rehabilitation and recovery model of care with the view of helping

as many residents as possible to move on to community based living. Sadly, within Deer Lodge we currently have a 20th-century low-skill custodial model of care within a 21st-century state-of-the-art modern building. Currently residents within Deer Lodge have little or no access to rehabilitation or therapeutic services, and many spend most of their days in their room and this has resulted in little interaction and a lack of a sense of community between the residents. All residents have their own ensuite private bedroom which is a major infrastructural advancement, but unfortunately this has led to many residents isolating themselves within their bedroom. The need for a seven-day week Crisis Intervention Service operational from 8am to 8pm based a model of a crisis intervention team with a clinical nurse manager and consultant clinical lead as outlined in A Vision for Change is urgently required. A four-bed high observation unit (Brandon Suite) was completed as part of Sliabh Mish Admission Unit, Kerry University Hospital in 2015 at a cost of €1.5m but to date remains closed due to a lack of nursing staff. Cormac Williams, Branch Organiser, Psychiatric Nurses’ Association, Kerry

The Bookworm

Love Actually premiered on Netflix yesterday and is definitely up there as the best modern Christmas movie! Gobnaits Have The Answer ALL who wanted a dose of zany nostalgia and full-on entertainment were well served at the Christmas in Killarney quiz last Thursday. This jam sandwich-fuelled jamboree put a new twist on parish hall-style antics and took place in The Laurels. It was hosted by the Christmas in Killarney festival’s mascots, the redoubtable quartet of Gobnaits. Gobnait D (Emer Corridan) was a welcome sight as she approached each

team to dispense Milk Tray chocolates. Sweet treats were all the rage as participants at each table had the task of making jam sandwiches. Some people opted to consume their sandwiches instead of presenting them for inspection (we’re looking at you, Breda Joy, Nia Sheehan, Eileen Sheehan and Liz O’Brien!). A whole host of spot prizes went home including tins of USA Assorted Biscuits.

Schoolmates To Host Festive Event In Aid Of Ian Fundraiser

IN THE true spirit of Christmas, the transition year students of St Brendan’s College, in conjunction with the parents’ council, the staff and the catering department, are hosting what promises to be a wonderful evening of entertainment on Wednesday, December 20, next to support the Ian O’Connell Fund. Ian would presently be taking part in transition-year in St Brendan’s were it not for the injuries he sustained in a bicycle accident during the

summer. The evening will commence with a carol service at 7.30pm in the school chapel, – admission is free to all and it truly is a magical evening. Following the carol service, the transition year students along with the parent’s council and the catering staff will host a craft fair in the college canteen. Christmas baking and crafts will be for sale, and there are lots of spot prizes to be won - all of your last minute Christmas wish lists will be catered for on the night!

Branch Out To Remember Loved Ones THE Killarney Memory Tree will be lit this Monday to commemorate loved ones who will also be remembered in a special Mass. The official switch-on will take place on New Road at 7pm and all are welcome. Lights can be ordered in memory of a loved one for a suggested donation of €5 and all proceeds will go to Holy Cross Mercy School, New Road. “The Memory Tree will then be lit nightly until January 6, the Feast of the Epiphany. Mass will be offered for all those commemorated at 1.30pm on Wednesday, December 20, in St

Mary’s Cathedral at our school’s Christmas Mass. All are welcome to attend,” said Rhonda Healy of Holy Cross Mercy NS. Contact 064-6631241 for further information.

Conor Myles and Dan O’Connor,

Partners of Terence F. Casey & Company Solicitors, 99 College Street, Killarney, present information on legal issues

ONLINE SHOPPING RIGHTS When you purchase from a seller located within the EU, the transaction is governed by the Consumer Rights Director which took effect in Ireland in June 2014. The EU rules relating to online transactions also apply to all situations where there is a distance between the seller and the buyer, for example when you purchase over the phone or by mail order. However, where the business is located outside of the EU the purchaser will not be able to rely on the protection of the Consumer Rights Directive so it is important to check the registered postal address of any online business you are purchasing from. All the consumer rights that relate to a purchase made in a shop also apply to purchases made online. However, in addition, some additional rights are afforded the purchasers. The seller must provide a full description of what is being bought, the sellers name, geographical address, phone number and email address, the totality of the price including taxes, payment and delivery arrangements, minimum length of contract if applicable and how long any particular offer applied shall remain valid and further the procedure cancelling the order. If the purchase turns out to be defective you have the same rights as if you had bought the goods in a shop. A refund or replacement can be sought. As the purchaser is unable to see the goods before concluding the contract, consumers have additional rights when purchasing online. With online purchases, consumers have a right of withdrawal or a cooling off period

which affords fourteen calendar days which commences on the day the goods are received or in the case of a service the date that the service has commenced. Before the expiry of the fourteen days, a purchaser may cancel the order for any reason including simply because a purchaser has changed their mind and are entitled to be fully refunded. This fourteen day cooling off period does not apply if goods have been made to a particular customer specifications i.e. customised or personalised items or for perishable goods such as fresh fruits, tickets for particular events or for certain hygiene reasons. If goods which have been ordered are not delivered, you are entitled to a refund to be provided within fourteen days of the date you should have received the goods. Consumer Rights Legislation does not cover a situation where you buy from an individual either directly or through a website. When buying from outside of the EU you are not entitled to rely on the protections of the Consumer Rights Director and therefore you should ensure that the website which you are dealing is reputable and you have read and understood all the terms and conditions. The above is a discussion piece only and does not purport to be legal advice and should not be relied upon as such. In respect of any specific circumstances, you should consult your solicitor to obtain specific legal advice and Terence F. Casey & Company do not accept any responsibility for any errors or omissions herein.

A NEW brand identity has been launched to market County Kerry at home and abroad. With the theme of ‘Kerry – Your Natural Escape’ – the Destination Kerry brand includes icons, imagery and messaging for use on all multiple platforms and highlights some of the top attractions and characteristics which attract visitors to Kerry as well as promoting the unique visitor experience on offer. The new brand – which is one of the key actions in the County Kerry Tourism Strategy and Action Plan – was launched at Killarney House by the Minister of State at the Department of Transport, Tourism and Sport, Brendan Griffin, on Friday. Describing the launch of the new brand identity as a hugely significant day for

Kerry, the Cathaoirleach of Kerry County Council, Cllr John Sheahan, described Kerry as “an inspirational place that stimulates all the senses” with its “majestic mountains, picturesque lakes and rivers, a dramatic coastline, and traditional towns and villages”. Kerry County Council chief executive Moira Murrell said the development of a strong brand identity for Kerry is an objective of the County Kerry Tourism Strategy and Action Plan which was published by Kerry County Council in 2016. “Marketing and promoting our wonderful county is absolutely critical in a competitive international market. But to do that, you need to have a very clear, attractive and resilient brand which stands out from the crowd,” she said.

Niall Set To Scale New Heights WHAT a difference a year makes. In October 2016, Niall Dennehy was just about able to walk one lap around Barraduff Community Field. Having turned his life around, the Glenflesk man is now setting his sights on scaling Africa’s highest mountain, Kilimanjaro. Niall has shed an inspirational 10 stone in weight after making the life-changing decision to boost his health and fitness over a year ago. He joined forces with his friend and fellow Glenflesk native Pat Sheehan, a health and fitness instructor. Niall, a farmer, began his exercise regime by walking around the local community field but as his fitness rapidly improved he set more and more goals. “Farming had taken over my life but gradually I started to learn to prioritise my health and fitness,” said Niall. Pat, who runs Pat Sheehan Health and Fitness weightloss centre at Club Vitae Leisure Centre, Hotel Killarney, and another weightloss centre in The Loft

The Elite Universal Contour Wrap is the perfect pre-Christmas treatment, says Jill Duggan of Killarney Toning & Beauty Studio

Get Ready For That Little Black Dress BODY WRAPS are an effective method to detox, tone, firm, exfoliate, cleanse and slim your body in very little time, leaving you feeling great and looking your best. We offer highly effective inch loss and detox body wraps from Elite Universal Contour Wrap. Through the new “Universal Contour Wrap Chrysalis” machine, which combines electrical muscle stimulation and thermal heat, the Universal Contour Wrap Classic Elite treatment allows for improved inch loss in faster time, while also offering a more pleasurable, relaxing treatment. A comfortable level of heat is applied and together with the compression provided by the wrap, the treatment promotes sweating and enables extra fluid trapped in the small spaces between tissues to be expelled. Body wraps actually activate the lymphatic system, which in turns encourages detoxification and boosts metabolism. So, it’s no surprise to hear that body wrapping is a trusted body sculpting technique. The clay-based treatment achieves inch loss by extracting toxins through the body’s soft tissue giving inch loss, rather than weight loss. Immediate results are instant inch loss, reduced appearance of cellulite, with skin feeling smoother and having a more toned appearance. It also helps to tone the skin and make stretch marks and cellulite less noticeable.Other benefits of the wrap include exfoliation, hydration to the skin while achieving inch loss with a natural sea clay solution. The clay has five main ingredients that help to simulate circulation, combat, stress, tighten and helps to detoxify the skin. • For more information or to book an appointment call 064-6632966

Fitness Studio in Millstreet, was well placed to give Niall advice. “It is 80% food and 20% exercise,” said Pat. “The beauty of the plan was that no foods were ruled out.” In July, Niall completed the Ring of Kerry Charity Cycle and following this he felt in need of another challenge. He and Pat hope to be on top of the world over the Christmas season as they embark on the Kilimanjaro climb on St Stephen’s day. The peak is six times higher than Carrantuohill which is where Niall has been training this year. He and Pat are both raising money for the Kerry branch of the Irish Kidney Association. They have paid for the trip themselves and have also held a fundraising walk in the Black Valley for the charity. In addition, money raised from an annual pool tournament in memory of Niall’s brother, Denis, will also be donated to the cause. You can contact Pat Sheehan Health and Fitness, Killarney, via its Facebook page or on 087-6856930.

Grand Tour - Amazon Prime

MOTORING

Get In Gear With All The Latest Motoring News

Grand Tour Is Back LAST Friday night saw the return of the Grand Tour on Amazon Prime. Not much has changed however May has had a haircut, Clarkson had pneumonia, Hammond was in a car crash. But they’re not doing the tent thing in different countries any more, they’ve got a permanent studio base in the Cotswolds, not far from Clarkson’s house. The American segment has been dropped which was a good thing and Conversation Street remains? There will be travel: 14 countries over the season, starting off in Switzerland where they’re driving around corners fast and bickering. Jeremy plays the ghost of driving past, in a petrol-guzzling Lamborghini; James represents the present with a hybrid Honda; Hammond is the future, with a very quick all-electric car called a Rimac, which Jeremy calls the “lady shaver”. It’s schoolboy banter that feels rehearsed and awkward. But the

studio audience howls along. The famous guest element has been changed. They’ve now got them going around a track, doing timed laps … hmm, feels a bit familiar, No! It’s completely different, because half of this track is gravel, and because the cars are Jaguars. Star in a Reasonably Pricey Car it could have been called, but actually it’s called Celebrity Face Off, because there are two of them per episode. It’s the Hoff and Ricky Wilson from the Kaiser Chiefs this week. See, it’s nothing like anything in any other car show, and even if it was, who are they ripping off, themselves? Back in Switzerland, Jeremy and James find sausages to eat, and a hill climb event to take part in. Then Hammond drives his car over a cliff. That’s pretty good too – unrehearsed, exciting, bloody hell. And he even manages to crawl out, before it explodes. Well done, Richard.

Killarney Valley Classic & Vintage MEMBERS of Killarney Valley Classic & Vintage Club are pulling out all the stops for their fifth annual Fossa Way walk. The Christmas walk takes place on Thursday, December 28, in aid of the Kerry/Cork Health Link Bus. This is a fun family day out and a wonderful way of burning off those turkey calories! There are two options, a 5k or 10k route. Registration for the walk is on the day from 1pm to 2pm, with the walk leaving from the Innisfallen Hotel in Fossa. There is no fee to take part, you can simply make a donation. All proceeds go to the beneficiary. A trad session, courtesy of Killarney School of Music, will take place after the walk and refreshments will also be served. There will also be a raffle in aid of the Ian O’Connell Fund after the walk with plenty of spot prizes to be won. For further information contact the club secretary on 087-3381842 or see www.killarneyvintage.com

Happy Birthday in Heaven.

The moment that you died My heart was torn in two, One side filled with heartache, The other died with you,

Today is filled with memories, With happiness and tears, Of birthday celebrations we’ve shared throughout the years,

I often lie awake at night When the world is fast asleep, And take a walk down memory lane With tears upon my cheek.

And though I’ll always miss you, The endless joy you brought, Warms my heart with gratitude, And fills my every thought,

Remembering you is easy, I do it everyday But missing you is the heartache That never goes away.

Wherever you are resting, I hope that you can see, How precious and uplifting, Your memory is to me.

I hold you tightly within my heart And there you shall remain. For those who still have their brothers Treat them with tender care You will never know the emptiness As you turn and he’s not there.

In loving memory of Peggy & Christy Quilligan, late of Spire View, Ballyspillane Killarney who died on the 16th and the 21st of December.

No words we write can ever say, How much we miss you everyday, No one knows the grief we bear, When the family gather And you’re not there,

God saw you getting tired, A cure was not to be, So he put his arm around you, And whispered “Come To Me” A golden heart stopped beating, Hard working hands at rest, God broke our hearts to prove to us, He only takes the best.

In tears I watched you sinking, I watched you fade away, And though my heart was breaking I couldn’t make you stay.

We laugh, we talk, we play the part, But beyond the sorrow is a broken heart. The sorrow we feel, We can never explain, And the ache in our hearts Will always remain. You’re not just a memory, Or part of the past, You’re ours to remember, As long as life lasts.

Precious people are very few, That is why there was only two of you. Lord, Treasure them in Your garden of rest, Because on earth They were two of the best. From your loving grandson Dan, wife Michelle & Family.

From your loving Grandson John, Wife Tanya and Family. In loving memory of Eileen O’Sullivan, late of South Hill, Mill Road, Killarney, who died on the 20th December 2015. Lakers’ Return To League Action To Face IT Carlow National League: Division 1 IT Carlow Basketball 88 Scotts Lakers 77 Words and Pic: Eamonn Keogh FOLLOWING the previous week’s big win in the cup, Scotts Lakers returned to league action with a road trip to face IT Carlow Basketball at The Barrow Centre, Carlow, on Saturday. Despite a promising opening quarter, the Lakers were eventually overpowered by the home side, who are challenging for a top-four place on the league table. The Killarney side were first out of the blocks and were the sharper side in the first quarter. However the foul count was 11-2 against the Lakers and this allowed the Carlow side in touch. Scotts Lakers led 26-22 at the end of the first quarter but IT Carlow came alive in the second quarter with American Jimmy Gordon in sensational form. His superb three-point shooting helped his side to

HOME GAME CANCELLED

SCOTTS LAKERS were due to play EJ Sligo All Stars in Killarney Sports Centre last Sunday but severe weather conditions and the snowfall in the west of Ireland prevented the visitors from travelling. The match is likely to be rescheduled in the next week or two. With 14 teams in the men’s Divitake control while Lakers struggled and committed a lot of turnovers. The Killarney side could only manage 12 points in this quarter compared to 30 points from Carlow and it was the home side that led 52-38 at the interval break. Scotts Lakers responded well in the third quarter with Dan Griffin having his best game of the season, rebounding well under the boards and converting a lot of scores. The Killarney side stayed in touch to reduce the deficit to 10 points at the end of the third quarter. This was enabled by some good scoring from Cian Clernon and Andrew Fitzgerald while the tactic of putting Antuan Bootle in a man-to-

sion One, the league will be divided into two sections in the New Year. Depending on results, Scotts Lakers may finish in joint seventh but would probably miss out on a place in the top half of the league due to score difference. There will be a division one shield to compete for in the 1B section while Scotts Lakers also have a national cup semi-final to look forward to against Ballincollig on January 6. man defence against Carlow’s Jimmy Gordon kept Carlow’s American much quieter in the second half. Carlow led 69-59 entering the final quarter as Scotts Lakers kept plugging away and managed to narrow the gap to six points midway through the final period. However they squandered further scoring chances as a missed easy layup and a number of turnovers gave the advantage back to Carlow. The home side finished stronger and had 11 points to spare in the end. TOP SCORERS: IT Carlow Basketball: Jimmy Gordon 36, Kevin Donoghue 13, Armands Kaikuls 8; Scotts Lakers St Paul’s Killarney: Dan Griffin 20, Antuan Bootle 14, Cian Cleron 13, Andrew Fitzgerald 10, Philip O Connor 10,

Killarney 12, Tralee 5

Killarney Triumph At Munster Level AFTER a three-week layoff, the Killarney U16s travelled to Tralee for a match that would determine the winners of the Munster U16 Conference 2. On a cold wet December Sunday the game crackled with intensity and commitment. With the elements at their back Killarney controlled early possession and territory and on six minutes pressure was rewarded with a try from captain Craig McKenzie Vass following excellent forward continuity with the conversion duly slotted over by Donnchadh Grealy. Eventually Killarney crossed for another try on 20 minutes after an

excellent counter rucking move and quick off loading that saw Gary Randles go over in the corner. The second half opened with a serious Tralee fightback with their strong forwards constantly driving forward. They were rewarded with a converted try from their goliath Number 8 Cian O’Regan to bring the game to 12 points to 7. Brave defensive tackling from Killarney and re-loading of defensive lines kept Tralee at bay. The game ebbed and flowed right until the final whistle with Killarney’s heroic defence, holding Tralee at bay. Captain Craig McKenzie Vass led by

Special Olympic Club

example with superb tackling and counter rucking. The front row of Matt McAuliffe, Brendy O’Donoghue and Odeniz Koyun defended abrasively at the coalface. Evan Mannix, Sam Casey and John McCarthy were ferocious and energetic throughout. Padraig Talbot competed valiantly, Peter Walsh battled at Number 9 and showed quick feet, Donnchadh Grealy was very good with both hands and feet until he had to go off after a high hit. The back line of Liam Randles, Thomas Clifford, Mark Sheahan, Jose Ferrero &and Gary Randles matched the forwards ferocity and in spite of the Baltic

conditions tried to run the ball when available. Cian Murphy came on in the first half and along with Dion O’Neill contributed hugely to the victory. The panel on the day also included James Kennelly, Jack O’Connell, Dan Twomey, Rob Nealon, josh Campbell, Adam Cronin and Adam McSweeney. The win secured a fifth victory from five games and as Conference C victors, Killarney will now play at the top table in the Munster A U/16 Cup Competition after Christmas. Well done to the coaching team Seamus Grealy, John O’Connell, Eoin Seery, Bill Stack and Leo Randles.

Ó Sé Brothers Pitch In To Raise Almost €100K For Club LAST Friday saw a tribute night unfolded in Killarney to honour the Ó Sé brothers from An Ghaeltacht GAA Club. The night could raise close to €100,000 for a new pitch for the club. Over 700 converged on the INEC for the gala event including past and present GAA stars from across Ireland.

In The Swim Of Things At The Aquila Club

SOME of the many swimmers that have completed a course of swimming lessons in Dieter’s Swim Academy at The Aquila Club at The Gleneagle Hotel took a bow on Saturday. Dieter and his team treated the children to a Christmas party to celebrate the end of a very successful season and the young swimmers received numerous awards and prizes for their hard work, and commitment to their swim lessons. Included in the photo are some

of the medal and trophy winners including Cathal Mackey (male swimmer of the year), Heather Culloty (female swimmer of the year and Evan O’Donoghue (junior swimmer of the year). Two swimmers, Claire Ahern and Alexandra Bilokhvosk, received a special “Outstanding Achievement Award” for their excellent swimming over the last few years. For further information on the swim academy and the swim club contact Dieter at the Aquila Club on 064-6636178.

Rugby News ... Words: Liam Murphy THE European Cup was back last weekend and we will have more European Cup action as Munster face Leicester Tigers in back-to-back matches. Last weekend Munster hosted the Tigers in the late kick off at a sold out Thomond Park and a cracker of a match was witnessed by all. In all new coach Johan Van Graan’s side scored 4 tries with Ian Keatley sublime from the boot earning the bonus point in the process. The return trip to Welford Road next Sunday will probably provide a sterner test and Munster will want to capitalise on the Castres win over Racing, meaning Munster top the pool with points to spare. The bad thing to come from the match was Andrew Conway’s injury, which means he will more than likely sit out next weekend and the Leinster game on St. Stephen’s day at Thomond. Conway clashed with Tesula Veainu but it was amazing to watch the Leicester star check on Conway even though he suffered a suspected broken jaw. A class act. Conway had a typically excellent match up to that point so hopefully

The Art of Hurling

won’t be out injured too long but with suspected concussion, there will be no chances being taken. Another item of note from the match was Rhys Marshall’s score broke the 4,000-point barrier in European Rugby, only the second team ever to do so after Toulouse. No mean feat for the men in red in their favourite competition! The other provinces fared very well also. Leinster ground out a victory over English Premier toppers Exeter to top their table, while Ulster battled atrocious weather conditions to beat Harlequins at the Stoop and are placed second in their pool. So far so good for the provinces. Let’s hope next weekend will prove as successful for them all!

Words: Eamonn Fitzgerald

HURLING is regarded as one of the most skilful and fastest field games in the world. Daire Whelan poses interesting questions in a new book published by Mercier Press. He profiles the modern top managers who would “offer insights into the philosophies and methodologies of some of the game’s most successful managers. Are modern day coaches complicating things for the sake of it, throwing in drills, science, stats, and game plans where they are not needed? He interviewed 11 inter-county managers to ascertain the essential ingredient these coaches use to gain success. “What I wanted was their insights into and philosophies about how they achieved what they achieved,” he writes. Diarmuid Healy focuses on technique, Justin McCarthy on Faith, Cyril Farrell on Application and Babs Keating on Responsibility. Eamonn Cregan opts for Instinct, Ger Loughnane for Character, Liam Griffin for Planning and John Allen for Balance. Anthony Daly opts for Hunger, Sambo McNaughton for Identity and Eamon O ‘Shea for The Mind.

GODFATHER OF MODERN HURLING The 1960s were the start of the evolution of the modern game. Men such as Donie Nealon and Fr Tommy Maher, the godfather of modern hurling, were the first to promote the concept of coaching. These “instructional” courses were held in Gormanston County Meath where the next generation of hurling and football coaches would be created. Diarmuid Healy says: “If you miss a ball it’s just another opportunity for why you should win the next one.” What the coaches learned in Gormanston helped the weaker counties such as Offaly rise up and proved it could be done. He believes that if you have players of character “they will bring you over the edge”. Eamon O’Shea emphasises The Mind. “Listen to what it sounds like when the sliotar hits the back of the net. Listen closely- what does that sound like.” He believes there has to be perseverance and resilience and that is what he likes about the Tipperary team.” Justin McCarthy puts it down to faith. “You must in all walks of life, have time for yourself and you must be able to see the beauty around you. You must see that to have a balance in your life.” Remember he broke his leg in three places in a motorcycle accident the week before the 1969

All Ireland. He had faith in himself to keep going where Mass and prayer were in his daily life.

MENTALITY AND MINDSET What these 11 successful managers looked for in their players was focussed mentality and mindset. The author asks the question what is it about some managers, who can lead and have a dressing room of players ready to go through the wall for them. When Clare were four points down at half-time in the 1997 All Ireland final there wasn’t a word out of Ger Loughnane until the team was ready to go out for the second half. Then with the mad eyes he just said, ‘men needed now’. That was enough. The challenge was there for the players and they responded. The managers must connect with their players to achieve success. The managers featured in this book did connect and were successful. The most successful manager of all time was not interviewed for this book. Brian Cody is still in charge in mighty Kilkenny. Daire Whelan succeeds in his objective and gives readers a fascinating insight in to the minds of the successful managers. It is a great read. The Art of Hurling by Daire Whelan is published by Mercier Press and it runs to 278 pages. He is the producer of the Off the Ball programme on radio.

MEK United

U12 LEAGUE: MEK 3 - 2 Killorglin C Goals by Stuart Scott, James Clifford and Tadgh Gosney. Man of the Match: Tadgh Gosney U14 LEAGUE: MEK 2 - 1 Killarney Athletic It was an early start for all on a crisp winter’s morning. Ball played through by todays captain, Eddie Moroney to Kevin Harant was slotted home into the left hand corner of the net! Thanks to our United defence and especially our goalie Dean Sheehan the first half ended 1 – 0. The second half started with Athletic in the driving seat, creating many chances, but, thanks to the unity of the MEK defence no score resulted! Further good defensive play led to the ball being dropped to Charlie Keating who’s through pass to Kevin Harant was rocketed into the back of the Athletic net! Moments later, a corner was followed by some nice play by Athletic who managed to beat our keeper and bring the score to 2 – 1. Well done to all our MEK players who played with the spirit of the team, show-casing the benefits of all their hard work. Finally, the match would not have been possible without the efforts of Martin Muldoon and his team, who gave us a great game on an excellent pitch (especially for this time of the year).

Killarney Legion GAA Club

CONGRATULATIONS: To James O Donoghue who was once again named as Munster GAA Player of the Year. Following on his previous wins in 2013 and 2014 there is no doubt that when clear of injury he is a huge influence on both club and county. His O Donoghue Cup final performance bodes well for 2018.Well done James. SENIOR TEAM REVIEW: Our season may have ended in disappointment with an agonizing one point defeat to Rathmore in the O Donoghue

Cup Final. But when looking back at 2017 there was a lot of positives to be gleamed from the year. Some of the team’s performances were most heartening. The opening County League games against Kilcummin and Spa were real humdingers. The 2 game (draw and replay) arm wrestle with Kenmare in the County Championship were tight and frantic before we eventually got the better of a team who later proved themselves to be a formidable unit in their own right. Dingle, with so many quality players, were put to the sword in Pairc an Ashaigh in a performance which earned the team an ovation from the club’s faithful who travelled in great numbers. To go through Division 2 of the County League undefeated, without your Kerry players, was a remarkable feat. We are also currently one of only 8 Senior clubs in the county. An elite position. Of course, there was low points. Losing to West Kerry in extra time in the County Championship, to Kenmare in the Club Championship semi final and of course the Rathmore final. But all these games are played at the top level and even if you are a fraction short you can be punished. LOTTO: Numbers were 4,7,9,24, No winner. Next week’s Jackpot €18,400. McLaren’s Most Extreme Street-Legal Car Named After F1 Legend CHRISTMAS has come early for 500 McLaren owners with the launch of the company’s “most extreme road car yet”. McLaren has dubbed the car the Senna in tribute to the legendary F1 racer Ayrton Senna. To add more credibility to the moniker, Ayrton’s nephew Bruno Senna is one of the development drivers for McLaren and says this vehicle is a fitting tribute. “The McLaren Senna honours my uncle because it is so utterly dedicated to delivering a circuit experience that allows a driver to

be the best they can possibly be,” he says. Every facet of the Senna has been engineered for aerodynamic efficiency, highlighted by the massive rear wing that extends from underneath the rear of the car. The interior has been stripped of anything that might add weight — even the stereo is an option. Leather or alcantara covers the race seats and dash but all other surfaces are left exposed to reduce weight and show off the carbon fibre weave that forms the basis of the Senna’s chassis.
