The Royal Visit: Was It Worth The Fuss?
Words: Adam Moynihan
Depending on what time you get your hands on today’s edition of the Killarney Advertiser, Prince Charles and Camilla, Duchess of Cornwall will either be enjoying a spot of tea in Killarney House, strolling around Muckross, or long gone. I’m sure the council and the Killarney Chamber of Tourism and Commerce showed Killarney in the best possible light and I hope the royals had a nice time in our little town. One or two people seemed to disagree with my views last week when I questioned whether or not the visit would actually prove to be a boon to local tourism. To be honest, I stand by
what I said. Charles visiting Killarney might be a big deal in Killarney (maybe), but is it a big deal anywhere else? Does anyone know where he visited two weeks ago? Or last week, even? I’m not anti-monarchy necessarily, nor am I a big republican, but I just don’t get people’s fascination with the royal family. It makes no sense to me in this day and age, especially in Ireland where traditionally we haven’t had the warmest of relationships with the crown. The recent royal wedding really left me scratching my head. I know it’s more an extension of celebrity culture than anything but I thought all the fuss over that was strange. But look, each to their own, I suppose.
Despite all the noise over Harry and Meghan’s nuptials, the influence of the royal family has waned in a major way over the past number of years. A recent survey indicated that 55% of UK citizens think the existence of the monarchy is largely positive. It’s hardly an overwhelming majority, and the figure dips significantly amongst the 18-30 demographic (37%). The British monarchy simply isn’t as relevant as it once was. If pictures of Killarney are beamed across British homes via the BBC or Sky News, that’s great. People will see how beautiful our town is. But I don’t think very many people are going to visit Muckross House just because
Prince Charles stopped by for half an hour. He may be very famous but I wouldn’t consider him to be much of an influencer. There are travel bloggers on Instagram with more sway in that regard (and if they visited we wouldn’t have to put the town on lockdown on a busy Friday afternoon). As I said, I hope they had a good trip and fair play to all of our officials who worked hard to make sure it was a success. And if it does lead to more tourism, that’s great. I just think we should be more concerned with pleasing actual tourists who spend actual money and stay here for longer than a couple of hours at a time. That’s whom we should be painting our fences for.
Charles And Camilla To Join Order Of Innisfallen Prince Charles and his wife Camilla will be inducted into the Order of Innisfallen in a ceremony at Killarney House today. This is an honour reserved for people from outside of Killarney who have made an exceptional contribution to the local economy. Previous inductees include actor Michael Fassbender and former Taoiseach Enda Kenny. The royals are visiting Kerry on the third leg of a three-day trip which started in Omagh on Wednesday. They travelled to Derrynane from Cork this morning via helicopter. In south Kerry, they stopped off in the birthplace of Daniel O’Connell before flying to Tralee to take in a performance at Siamsa Tíre. They then departed for Killarney by car and the royal entourage, which includes 12 vehicles in total, was expected to arrive at Muckross House and Gardens for 2pm. There they visited the schoolhouse, traditional farms and Muckross House itself, where Queen Victoria stayed when she came to Killarney in August 1861. The Prince and the Duchess of Cornwall then travelled by car to Killarney House at 3pm where they were expected to mingle with 200 invited guests. It is here where the royal couple were inducted into the prestigious Order of Innisfallen. Major traffic congestion was expected in town today between 2.45pm and 4.45pm as Mission Road, which runs alongside Killarney House and Gardens, was shut down.

Killarney Gears Up For 4th Of July Celebrations Killarney town is set for a major transformation this coming July as America’s most significant national holiday is taking over the town. Killarney’s annual 4th of July Independence Day festival is set to be a celebration of all things American. Festivities on Wednesday, July 4 include The Big Parade, an out-door cinema, choir singing, a street party, swing dancing, and lots more fun for both young and old, all located in the beautiful scenic town of Killarney. “There will be a host of fun filled activities for both young and old throughout the day,” said festival committee joint chairman Ollie Favier. “This year the festival, now in its 5th year, aims to bring the town to life in a fun and exciting way to celebrate all that is great about the US and to remember the years of legacy between the United States and Ireland.” The celebrations will commence at 3pm with the raising of the American flag by the Mayor of Killarney and Chamber President at Killarney Town Tall. Following that, the town will transform into a carnival of fun and entertainment. There will be street BBQs and brass bands, cheerleaders and Disney characters will be on hand to keep everyone entertained from 3-7pm. The highlight of the day is The Big Parade which will commence at 7pm from the Outlet Centre car park, and this will bring the streets of Killarney to life. Following the big parade there will be a screening of Dirty Dancing on an outdoor screen on the grounds of Killarney House. This is a free ticket event but places must be booked online. The screening will be alcohol free. And of course no 4th of July celebrations would be complete without a spectacular fireworks display,

which will round off the evening by lighting up the night sky over Killarney at 11.15pm. “The excitement is already building,” Ollie added. “This festival has something to offer both visitors and locals alike. It’s packed full of fun, energy and entertainment with lots of excitement and memories in the making.” The 4th of July is the most significant national holiday in the United States and given Killarney’s unique
200 Jobs Could Be Lost At Liebherr The town of Killarney was in a state of shock this week as news broke that over 200 jobs could be lost at the town’s biggest employer, Liebherr crane factory in Fossa. SIPTU says it is has been told that at least 27 workers are losing their jobs almost immediately and another 60 may be let go in July. Further cutbacks are expected in August when another 128 employees could be let go. The firm currently employs more than 800 people. SIPTU Organiser Joe Kelly said: “Our members are shocked and disappointed at the confirmation by the management of Liebherr of the extent of potential job losses at the plant over the coming weeks and months. SIPTU representatives were informed yesterday of the scale of potential job losses with 27 workers to be let go at the end of June, up to 60 in July and possibly 128 in August. “This is a severe blow to the loyal Liebherr workforce, their families and the community in Killar-
ney and surrounding areas. The company has provided steady employment for generations of workers in Kerry.” Liebherr has been a reliable source of employment for the Killarney area for decades and locals are hopeful that the company can bounce back and continue to provide jobs for many years to come. In 1958, Hans Liebherr founded the company in Ireland as the business’ first manufacturing plant outside of Germany. At the Killarney plant the company produces ship to shore container cranes, rubber-tyred and rail-mounted stacker cranes, and accessories. Liebherr container cranes are in use in over 100 ports and nearly 50 countries worldwide. The Killarney operation is part of global powerhouse the Liebherr Group which has an annual turnover of $9 billion with 150 companies and 41,500 employees worldwide.
relationship with America through the years is now an annual event in the town. It celebrates the Declaration of Independence, adopted on July 4, 1776. The Thirteen Colonies of America declared themselves to be states and no longer part of the British Empire, though the Revolutionary War continued for some time after. For more information you can visit the festival Facebook page at KillarneyJuly4thCelebrations.

TOWNTALK Treyvaud’s TV Series Snapped Up By Amazon Prime The culinary skills and zany personality of a Killarney restauranteur is being beamed into millions of homes around the world as his nine-part cooking and travel series has been snapped up by Amazon Prime. The lively and engaging series, featuring Paul Treyvaud cooking on his travels around Ireland, caught the eye of the world’s biggest streaming platform and a deal was brokered with Flame Distribution, who represent the Killarney businessman. Paul, who runs Treyvaud’s Restaurant with his brother Mark, also recently signed up with Big Handsome Media who are acting as his Irish distribution company for a new Trevyaud’s Kitchen series, which he has just finished filming. Treyvaud’s Travels is all about unique characters and stunning locations that don’t normally get the attention they deserve and it features some cracking recipes and a whole load of fun. “The emphasis is on having a laugh when perfecting simple cooking techniques,” said Paul. “People are sick of nonsense on the screens and just want a cooking series that delivers on its promise.” Paul has received great support and encouragement from Minister of State for Transport, Tourism and Sport, Brendan Griffin, who put him in touch with Tour-
Sculpture Wood sculptor Will Fogarty carving a native leaping red deer from an old chestnut tree at the junction of Port Road and New Road. The 3m high sculpture will be an iconic image for tourists heading on the Ring of Kerry. Pic: Don MacMonagle.
ism Ireland boss, Niall Gibbons, in relation to possible promotional opportunities in the US and Paul will be conducting a global marketing campaign with the support of Tourism Ireland to promote Treyvaud’s Travels. Amazon Prime is beamed into 90 million homes in America alone. The Treyvaud’s Travels series features spectacular footage of Killarney, including fabulous panoramic views from the top of Cardiac Hill and Muckross House and Gardens, as Treyvaud is bringing it all back home in one episode of his fun-filled culinary tour of Ireland.

KDYS Youngsters Lead The Way In Building Futures
As part of the KDYS Building Futures campaign, 112 inspirational young people from all across Kerry developed over 60 social action projects that have made a huge difference to their local communities in the last year. A wide range of projects and events were created and developed by young leaders as part of the KDYS Youth Participation Training. The young leaders were acknowledged and celebrated at a special night in Killarney, where they were presented with certs and their fantastic contributions were showcased. The Youth Participation Training equips young people with a set of critical skills which will last them a lifetime, skills including: leadership, negotiation, budgeting,
project management and teamwork, communication and presentation skills. The training also provided a platform for young people to make a positive contribution to their local community by organising events and projects. From north to south Kerry young people involved this year contributed over 4,500 hours of their time to make their community a better place for everyone! Mr Tim O Donoghue (CEO) said: “Giving young people a voice and the opportunity to make a positive contribution is what youth participation is all about. Despite all the challenges facing young people today, KDYS is committed to building futures for all young people and the communities where they live. This is a great exam-
ple of what results from providing young people with the spaces, skills and opportunities to create change. Through our partnership with the Ring of Kerry Charity Cycle we are hoping to extend opportunities and programmes such as this to even more young people. We are asking everybody to get behind #teamKDYS this year so that we can make this a reality.” People can help by signing up to cycle, sponsor a KDYS cyclist or volunteer with the KDYS to assist in the Ring of Kerry event. KDYS has an exciting vision for young people in Kerry. A future where all young people can realise their potential, a future where young people can learn the skills needed for their lives today, and to ensure a healthy and successful future.

Comedy Club Opens 4th Of July Festivities Its Doors In Killarney
The Chatroom
This week in the chatroom we went on location outside the Town Hall to chat to the organisers of Killarney’s 4th of July Festival. This chatroom couldn’t have started better with the brilliant Paud O’Donoghue, representing the Glenflesk Male Choir, belting out the Star-Spangled Banner surrounded by some very special guests before Kieran started chatting to organ-
isers Ollie Favier & Diarmuid Leane about all the events they have planned and the continued increase in popularity of the festival, the guys also tell us how they plan to make this years festival bigger and better than ever! You can catch this latest Chatroom tonight Friday 15th June at 9pm on our website ww.killarneyadvertiser.ie and on our Facebook page.
The Kingdom Comedy Club opened its doors to the public on Saturday June 2, upstairs in The Eviston House Hotel, smack bang in the heart of Killarney. The brainchild of local businessman Tony Dunne (owner of network marketing agency Kingdom Media) and Cork comedian and promoter Cornelius ‘Family Guy’ O’Sullivan, the club is initially running for the five Saturdays in June but hopes to extend its stay for long after. So, how did a blow-in Kerryman (Tony) and a Corkman (Cornelius) get together in the first place and dream up this hair brained scheme? Good question! The answer is simple: their collective love for stand-up comedy. They both met a few years back at a show Cornelius was performing in and ended up bonding over a few pints and have been pals ever since. These guys simply love comedy and after a chat one day they decided that it was time to set the wheels in motion and open up a comedy club! Tony being a well-respected business man in the town located a venue and looked after all the administration, branding,
nitty gritty and bits and pieces that are essential to make the comedy nights happen, and Cornelius, with 10 years experience on the Irish circuit, cultivates the gigs, hand picking the very best of national and international talent, while also hosting the shows as well. It’s a marriage made in heaven: a modern day bromance (both their wives are just happy to be rid of them and out of the house every Saturday night!). The shows start at 9pm and the doors open at 8.30pm. Initially for the first run of shows entry is free. The dream is to have a regular comedy club in Kerry, and Killarney is the ideal spot as it’s a vibrant and energetic town. Hopefully the local community will get behind these two dreamers and support another local business trying to make its way in the world. More information can be found on their website www.kingdomcomedyclub.com or you can follow their Facebook page “kingdomcomedyclub”. They’re also on Instagram, Twitter, YouTube and TripAdvisor. So, come on down, grab a drink, take a seat and have a good old laugh for yourself! Life is short!

Anne Lucey gives her take on happenings in Killarney, Kerry and beyond
More The Half Crown Than The Crown When Queen Victoria, Prince Albert, two of her daughters, large retinue and press corps departed Killarney by train on August 29, 1861, “the consensus was the ordinary people were a model of loyalty and allegiance to the crown.” The lavish visit was recalled again in 2011 in the press clippings ahead of Queen Elizabeth’s visit to Ireland. The nobility rode along side Vic’s carriage. Dragoons and equerries and other long forgotten ranks in this republic accompanied her, along with 400 members of the constabulary in dress uniform drawn from Cork, Limerick and Kildare. The who’s who of Kerry got to meet and greet the Queen during her three-day stay in Killarney. Killarney House, owned by Lord Castlerosse, was the public side of the visit, while her stay at Colonel Herbert’s place at Muckross House was more private. Hundreds of boats lined the quays as she set out by barge on the lake; thousands lined the lakeshores and streets to cheer on the Queen. She visited Innisfallen. She walked around Muckross Abbey. She took a ride in a landau around Muckross estate. The late Séamus McConville, former editor of the Kerryman, searched the archives of the 150-year-old Kerry Post in 2011: “The royal carriage was drawn by four dark bays, with outriders and footmen behind. A guard of honour of the 18th Royal Irish were drawn up and presented arms, and the escort was composed of 40 of the 1st Royal Dragoons. Lord Castlerosse and Colonel Herbert as lieutenant of the county rode on either side of the carriage. “The assemblies on five monster galleries, erected by Lord
Castlerosse, joined with the thousands on the road (to Killarney House) in the heartiest of demonstrations of welcome. The Queen seemed greatly impressed and highly pleased with the enthusiasm of the people and bowed repeatedly to the right and to the left, with a marked and gracious manner, to the assembled thousands.” It seems there was a spontaneous loyalty in Killarney to the Crown. These days of course, it’s not the Crown that is the important issue – it’s the half crown. The visit of Prince Charles and the Duchess of Cornwall, and the communication of their visit by a large press corps, will hopefully draw the British loyal tourist in their hordes to Killarney as it did in 1861. The English Market in Cork - a down at heel, fly-blown place when I lived in the city - has seen a transformation and a surge of visitors since Queen Elizabeth was snapped heartily laughing at the fishmonger by Killarney’s Valerie O’Sullivan and Cork has been put on the tourist map. Back in the day, Castlerosse, and Herbert to a lesser extent, would have been fully aware of the value of Queen Vic’s visit to local tourism too. Tourism was already thriving in Killarney, drawing poets like Tennyson (The splendour falls on castle walls… Blow, bugle, blow…) And while Queen Victoria’s visit is often mistakenly said to have started tourism in Killarney, it was a far more pedestrian piece of infrastructure which actually clinched it for the town. Before Victoria, the railway had arrived and it was this 1853 event which more than anything literally drew the tourist - and allowed the Queen to progress to Killarney in just six and a half hours from Dublin.
“The opening of the Dublin to Killarney railway line in 1853 brought this remote region within reach of a host of new visitors,” Killarney’s Donal Horgan of Lewis Road writes in his splendid book on tourism The Victorian Visitor to Ireland, published in 2002. Killarney, of course, ticked all the right boxes for the Victorian tourist: a romantic lakeside setting, spectacular ruins, day trips, lots of parkland and lots of ways to amuse, and quality accommodation. A huge industry has been built on the 1861 visit, so much so the town is now almost wholly dependent on tourism. But challenges remain: access is still an issue, a year-round business is still someway off, and we still do not have a third level tourism college which would set proper professional standards across all sectors of the local industry. Courting the loyal and neighbouring British tourist particularly in the shoulder and winter season - might just clinch it. There has, of course, this time been an attempt to spread the Prince around like the proverbial pound of butter so Tralee for instance can reap a tourism benefit. Our own Moira Murrell, the county chief executive who is a very fair-minded person indeed, is credited with swinging it for Tralee . And the county town, a stronghold of republicanism, which a mere decade ago refused safe haven to the British flagship store Marks and Spencers (who had to seek refuge in Killarney), can’t get over its good fortune. In his book on tourism, Donal Horgan also notes how the Prince of Wales was so taken by the Gap of Dunloe in 1858 he broke into a rendition of God Save the Queen. Now, one has to wonder if Martin Ferris, and even the Fianna Fáil Mayor of Killarney, or Tralee, will be so moved by Prince Charles this time, and perhaps even Camilla, there will be a spontaneous embrace of the UK anthem - for the sake of the half crown, of course.
I Am Still With Muckross House And Tourism I was mightily intrigued to read of the good fortune of Muckross House and Traditional Farms. The 2017 visitor numbers to “top fee-charging visitor attractions” numbered visitors to Muckross at 552,923. And the figure was greeted with great joy across the press. Now, good accountants will always advise you not to have round numbers for the taxman. They make revenue suspicious straight away. So in that very precise number, there could be no reason for suspicion or questioning. However, the jump on the previous year was enormous. So I went back to my records. In 2016 there were 122,074 visitors to the House and 68,664 fee-paying visitors to the farms. A further, separate figure was given for the non-fee-paying part and the total number of all visitors was put at 356,164. That was 2016. So I went back to the Department and asked them to explain the extreme good fortune which put Muckross 9th in the list of top fee-paying attractions, with three times the number of fee paying visitors it had the previous year. I got a decent enough reply, but no real explanation. For instance I was told it was really down to the servants dining hall and a few new windows. Ha? There is such interest now in laundry, I thought. “With regard to Muckross House in particular, in recent years, the Department in conjunction with the
Trustees of Muckross House have invested in refurbishing the fabric of the building (including refurbishing the original metal-framed windows, repairs to the roof, chimneys, gutters and downpipes) and also the expansion of the visitor offering at the site with the expansion of the tour to include the newly restored restoration of the Victorian Servants’ Dining Hall and Laundry Room,” a spokeswoman said. I went back to Fáilte Ireland. And after a bit of to-ing and fro-ing, they have put their hands up to a rather creative accounting exercise. First there was an attempt to say the gardens were fee paying. I had to argue with them saying I got in for free every day. Then apparently the visitors to the gardens are surreptitiously counted. Now, to me the figures don’t add up at all. The actual fee-paying numbers to Muckross House in 2017 are 127,434, an increase of 4 per cent on 2016. The farms at 69,483 saw an increase of 1 per cent. These were doubled to determine the number of visitors to the gardens and the total added again to give an overall figure of over half a million fee-paying visitors, which is simply not true. I leave the reader to interpret it whatever way they like. But I have to say, there is a separate section published by Fáilte Ireland from non-fee-paying visitor attractions. So this is not just a silly slip. It is downright misleading, in my view, akin to the tall tales of
boatmen and jarveys. And in an such an important industry, this is not good enough. We need to rely on statistics for tourism. The “yarn” also takes from the very welcome increase of 4 per cent of fee-paying visitors to Muckross House.
Rear-ended
Lastly, this column prides itself with being ahead of the curve, very often. Last week we had a story about the danger to back gardens in New Street and a question raised about the possibility of a CPO, or compulsory purchase order. Well, it seems the capital’s front gardens are now at risk. The story of the week in the nationals tells how new bus corridors will target people’s front gardens and hefty sums are to be handed over. 200 gardens are to be acquired by CPO by the National Transport Authority for the fast lane bus corridors, it is expected.

Great Fun For Kids At Yoga Camps Summer is here and so are the yoga camps at Muckross Traditional Farms. The camps provide a great week of fun for children and with the combination of yoga, the outdoors and a range of traditional farm activities, it truly is a wonderful week. Each day starts with a yoga class, which combines the poses through games and fun ways to learn the movements. Children participate in one of the activities in the traditional farms every day, i.e. pet farm, bouncy castle, blacksmith, horse and carriage ride, churning butter, bread-making and milking the cow. This is followed by a visit to the woodland playground area. After this they’re back to the schoolhouse for a break and a final yoga class. This second class focuses on the calming, quieting poses and breath awareness. Each day finishes with arts and craft. Yoga has many benefits to children. Physically it strengthens and energises, it improves balance, helps to improve flexibility, builds focus and concentration and provides calmness to the mind. It also helps children to use their bodies in a healthy way. You can manage stress through breathing and meditation while
also increasing confidence and developing a positive body image. Children can also feel part of a healthy, non-competitive group. In an increasingly busy world, yoga is a great tool for every child to find that element of quietness within themselves. Yoga camps run for three weeks during July and there are a few spaces left. If you would like to book, please contact Aileen on 086 0399358. “We are looking forward to seeing all the yogis this year,” said camp co-ordinator Aileen Kingerlee. “We’re very excited about our beautiful yoga deck of cards that we have made in conjunction with the Gaelscoil in Killarney. Everyone will get one along with other craft goodies. See you soon!”
New Unislim Classes For Killarney Health Five years ago, Deirdre Hayes McCann opened her first Unislim class in Killorglin after losing two stone. Now, as she prepares to open her new class in Killarney, she shares her top tips for slimming success. “I can safely say that joining Unislim was the best decision I have ever made. Starting off as a member, I lost two stone and I am so thrilled to be celebrating my fifth year at my target weight this year. I am living proof that this plan works for life. “My top tip is to plan your meals in advance and cook in batches. Before joining Unislim, I was always “too busy” to cook from scratch, but once my weight loss became a priority I found the time. Are You Getting The Best Deal On Car Finance?
Thinking of buying a new car in the coming months? Then you’ve no doubt heard about Personal Contract Plans or PCPs. These car finance agreements have been getting a lot of attention – and not always for the right reasons. The Competition and Consumer Protection Commission (CCPC) recently released the first public analysis of PCPs in Ireland. The report found that a third of new car purchases in Ireland are now financed by PCP agreements. In 2016, a significant €805 million was extended to consumers in PCP finance – a considerable increase of 65% on 2015. The CCPC says, however, that because of the complexity of these agreements, there is a concern that consumers do not fully understand how they work. In particular, they say there is a doubt that consumers are fully aware of the balloon payments at the end of a PCP agreement. The CCPC is of the view that further protection is needed in Ireland for consumers availing of these agreements.* Speaking about this, Helen Courtney Power, Business Development Officer of Killarney Credit Union, said: “For many, headline rates on PCP agreements can at first look more attractive, but these can easily distract from the range of additional charges and a good deal of inflexibility. Essentially PCPs are lease schemes. The buyer has, in effect, hired the car for a particular period of time while they make payments. At the end of the agreement, they will have to make a balloon payment in order to own the car. With a traditional car loan, the person simply borrows the money to pay for a car, which they own imme-
diately. They can also sell the car on at any time they wish, should they need to, whereas they do not have this option with a PCP.” There is further detail in the ‘small print’ of a PCP agreement which consumers should be aware of. They will, for example, need to be conscious of the mileage they are clocking up, because the balloon payment at the end of the agreement will have been calculated with their annual mileage in mind. If, on the other, hand a consumer takes out a car loan before purchasing a car, they are effectively going as a cash buyer to the car dealer and are in a far better position to negotiate a deal. Helen continued: “At Killarney Credit Union we offer a car loan with an APR rate of 7.8%** which is typically approved within 24 hours. There are no hidden fees or administration charges with our loan, and we are always happy to work with our members to arrange repayments in a way that best suits their individual circumstances. We would really encourage anyone thinking of buying a new or used car in the coming weeks to contact us at Killarney Credit Union before making any decisions. We are happy to see all our members, no matter how long it has been, and of course we are always happy to chat to anyone who has never been a Credit Union member.” *CCPC; Personal Contract Plans – The Irish Market. March 2018 ** For a €7,000, 5 year variable interest rate loan with 60 monthly repayments of €140.00, an interest Rate of 7.49%, a representative APR of 7.8%, the total amount payable by the member is €8,413. The Killarney Valley Classic & Vintage officially launched their restored 1989 Land Rover 90 last Wednesday evening at Dermot Healy Motors, Killarney, giving the Land Rover a whole new lease of life in the name of charity. Following the success of the club’s Massey Fergusson 135 Tractor, which was fully restored for charity last year and raised an incredible €50,000, the club took on a bigger challenge of an old Land Rover 90 which happens to coincide with Land Rover celebrating their 70th anniversary this year. The club sourced the old Land Rover through a friend of the club in Cork with the vehicle being off the road since 2002 and with only 82,000 miles on the clock. The vehicle was in good condition except for the bulk head which had a serious rust issue. The chassis and
other components were well-maintained but the club decided to do a full and complete dismantle last November when the project began. This included the full galvanising of the chassis and, to give it a modern look, the club adding a sump guard, winch, roof rack, awning and LED lights. A full body spray was carried out to make it a dream machine. Club Chairman James Looney estimated that it took over 300 hours of voluntary time to complete the restoration, which would not have been possible to complete without the huge support of the club members, sponsors and supporters through all walks of life. “The project was a great social event for our committee and club members and would like to sincerely thank everyone who got involved with the project,” James added.
Benefitting this year from the proceeds are Down Syndrome Kerry and Recovery Haven Cancer Support Group. To be in with a chance of winning this immaculately restored vehicle, purchase tickets (€10 each) online at www.killarneyvintage.com, directly from both charities and from various outlets. The Land Rover will be at different events throughout the county over the summer months with the draw taking place on November 17 next. If you have any queries, please contact the club secretary on 087 3381842. Well done to all involved in this worthy project. Such an endeavour takes a huge amount of hard work and no little ingenuity. With two deserving charities set to benefit, we would encourage everyone to show their support and buy a ticket or two.

Conor Myles and Dan O’Connor,
Partners of Terence F. Casey & Company Solicitors, 99 College Street, Killarney, present information on legal issues
THE RIGHTS OF PRIVATE TENANTS IN RENTED PROPERTY The principle responsibilities and legal rights and obligations that a tenant acquires extends largely from the various pieces of registration of Landlord and Tenant Law not to mention of course any form of Lease or Letting Agreement that is in place between you as a tenant and the Landlord. There has been very many recent changes to such rights and obligations and this is an area of law which is fast evolving. Recently legislation has put in place measures to increase security of tenure for new tenancies and also there has been much discussion in relation to rent pressure zones where rent increases are capped. There has been further simplification of various forms of dealing with complaints and disputes as they arise and extending the tenancy cycle of part 4 tenants from 4 to 6 years. Various helpful additional information can be obtained from the Residential Tenancies Board. It is helpful to look at the rights of a private tenant. We will look at some of these. As a private tenant, you are entitled to peaceful and quite enjoyment of your rented unit. This means that you can expect not to be disturbed by your landlord or indeed by your neighbours. Complaints can be made to various entities, in certain circumstances to include the Residential Tenancies Board. In this regard, you should note that your Landlord is only allowed enter your rented unit with your permission except of course in the case of an emergency. Otherwise and in normal circumstances the Landlord should only ever enter the rented unit by prior arrangement given well in advance. You are entitled to receive a rent book which simply documents details in relation to the tenancy and notes all payments made. Also, residential units for rent must have a Building Energy Rating Certificate and Advisory Report showing how energy efficient the property is and what can be
done to make it more so efficient. Your Landlord is obliged to register the entry of the tenancy with the Residential Tenancies Board and you have a right to a copy of this also. Arising from this, you have a right to certain amount of notice of the termination of your tenancy or indeed in the event that there is likely to be a planned increase in the rent. The rent increases are similarly regulated by legislation as to how often they can be made and in the event of any dispute of course you have recourse to the residential tenancies board and in doing so, you cannot be victimised or penalised for doing so. You have the right of reimbursement for repairs that you carry out, however for the avoidance of doubt any such repairs must of course be reasonable and necessary and you should have a receipt, but for the avoidance of any difficulty you should provide ample forewarning in writing to your landlord of your intention to have the repairs carried out and indicate the proposed expense, and that you would be looking for reimbursement, so that a dispute in respect of this will not arise later. You have the right of contact information of the landlord as it is vital that in the event of an emergency you can contact the landlord or his/her agent by telephone, post or email or other such contact information. The above are just a number of the myriad of rights that a tenant has which such rights ever expanding as legislation in this area evolve. The above is a discussion piece only and does not purport to be legal advice and should not be relied upon as such. In respect of any specific circumstances, you should consult your solicitor to obtain specific legal advice and Terence F. Casey & Company do not accept any responsibility for any errors or omissions herein.

Other stars spotted at the lavish bash included models Nadia Forde and Michelle McGrath. Kim Kardashian threw her husband Kanye West an epic 41st birthday party. The rapper, who recently released two new albums, turned 41 over last weekend. Kanye celebrated with close friends and family on Saturday. The bash was held at a restaurant in LA, and Kim had an incredible birthday cake made which resembled his Ye album cover, which featured Wyoming’s picturesque landscape. Kim’s sisters Kourtney and Kendall were spotted at the party, as well as some famous faces including Kanye’s pal Kid Cudi, who he recently released an album with called KIDS SEE GHOSTS. A mentallist called Lior entertained guests at the restaurant, and even got Kanye and Kendall involved in his tricks. The party was all about Kanye, as guests listened to his new album throughout dinner, and even their coffees at the end of the night had Kanye’s face on them.

Limited Spaces For The Škoda Ring Of Kerry Charity Cycle There are limited spaces remaining for The Ring of Kerry Charity Cycle, which will take place on Saturday, July 7. The cycle, which this year celebrates 35 years as Ireland’s largest one-day charity fundraising event, is expected to see 10,000 recreational cyclists take part. Over the past 35 years, the cycle has raised almost €15 million for 150 charity organisations, through the annual support of participating cyclists and volunteers. Aside from some essential costs to run the 180km Ring of Kerry Charity Cycle, all funds raised go directly to carefully selected charity organisations. To date, funds raised from The Ring of Kerry Charity Cycle have benefited many support services, such as Down Syndrome Ireland, Enable Ireland, the Irish Kidney Association, Breakthrough Cancer Research, the Kerry Hospice Foundation, Pieta House, St Joseph’s Home in Killorglin, and many more. To celebrate Škoda and Liam Lynch Motors’ sixth consecutive year partnering with The Ring of Kerry Charity Cycle, they have announced some special activities to support cyclists before and after the in-
famous event. On the evening of Friday, July 6 at the cyclist registration event, Škoda and Liam Lynch Motors will have two courtesy bike mechanics on stand-by for any last minute repairs that participants may require, to ensure that participants’ bikes are readily prepared for the 180km challenge. In addition to that, Škoda will have an array of high quality cycling apparel for sale, including shorts, jerseys and rain gear, at a special discount rate. After completing the trek, Škoda and Liam Lynch Motors will offer participants courtesy massages via six specialist sports massage therapists, who will be on hand to take care of any post-cycle strains and aches. Liam Lynch of Liam Lynch Motors said: “We have a great tradition of welcoming guests to our wonderful county and we’ll be doing just that as thousands descend on Kerry for this event in July. There has been a great response to the cycle yet again this year, but I would urge people to register for the last re-

DD McCarthy, Manager of Macroom Tool Hire said: “The Husqvarna brand is very strong. People immediately recognise it and know that it’s a quality brand. Their chainsaws are market leaders as they are continually researching and developing the product.” He added that this year the automower is becoming a bestseller. These robotic mowers trim your entire lawn, automatically and quietly. The grass
clippings fall into the soil like mulch and fertilise your lawn. He finished by saying that the new lightweight battery operated garden tools by Husqvarna are also making waves this summer. They have a push button easy start system. This means no pull cord, no fuel and no cables. They’re also really easy to use and lightweight. This is a great advantage for female and senior gardeners or those who find the cord difficult to pull. One battery fits the entire range of equipment.

A Weekly Round-Up Of News + Views From Kerry And Around
Held In Number Of Women Affected American Vietnam After Protests By Cervicalcheck Scandal Expected To Rise The number of women affected by the recent smear test scandal is likely to increase as more cases are reviewed, according to the new head of CervicalCheck. The CervicalCheck controversy came into the public eye when Vicky Phelan, whose cervical cancer is now terminal, settled a High Court action against the HSE and the US laboratory tasked with reviewing one of her smears. It was then revealed that some 209 women were not told about the clinical audit of their cancer tests. The head of the National Screening
Service Damien McCallion says more women will be contacted about their cancer test audits. There is currently a further audit of 46 cases, of which 12 are close to completion. McCallion said: “Yes it will get larger, I would expect, before the Royal College review concludes… There are people who are being added at the moment as the audit goes through.” The State Claims Agency told the Public Accounts Committee that there are currently 28 active legal cases in relation to CervicalCheck.
Trump Corner New York’s Attorney General Sues Trump Foundation New York’s attorney general announced yesterday that she was suing the Trump Foundation, as well as Donald Trump and his children, alleging “extensive and persistent” law-breaking. Barbara Underwood said the charitable foundation had engaged in “unlawful political co-ordination” designed to influence the 2016 election. The lawsuit seeks to dissolve the foundation, Ms Underwood said. The foundation denied the charges, calling them politically motivated. In a statement, Ms Underwood said Mr Trump had illegally instructed the foundation to provide support to his presidential campaign by using the foundation’s name and funds it raised to promote the campaign. The president hit back at the lawsuit on Twitter, saying that “sleazy New York democrats” were “doing
Never fails to entertain
everything they can to sue me”. He vowed he would not settle the case. The lawsuit alleges that the foundation paid $100,000 to settle legal claims against Mr Trump’s Mar-A-Lago resort, $158,000 to settle claims against one of his golf clubs, and $10,000 to purchase a painting of Mr Trump to hang at another of his golf clubs. The purchase of the painting was an example of one of “at least five self-dealing transactions” which violate tax regulations on non-profit charities, the statement said. “As our investigation reveals, the Trump Foundation was little more than a cheque book for payments from Mr Trump or his businesses to nonprofits, regardless of their purpose of legality,” Ms Underwood said. “This is not how private foundations should function.” The Trump Foundation issued a statement denying the charges and accusing the attorney general of holding its $1.7 million in remaining funds “hostage for political gain”.
An American is being held for “disrupting public order” in Vietnam after joining recent economic protests. Will Nguyen, 32, was detained on Sunday in Ho Chi Minh City during demonstrations against new economic zones in the country. Protesters believe the law is a means to grant Chinese companies lengthy leases on Vietnamese land. Foreign ministry spokesperson Le Thi Thu Hang told reporters a consular visit is being arranged. Authorities detained more than 100 people as demonstrations against the law turned violent, with rocks and petrol bombs thrown. Mr Nguyen, a Texas-born Yale graduate, joined the protests on Saturday, tweeting a number of images of the march through Ho Chi Minh City. In another post, Mr Nguyen wrote about “how enor-
mous of an achievement” the demonstrations are for the Vietnamese people. The student, who is set to receive a master’s degree in Singapore next month, was visiting Vietnam when he began documenting the demonstrations. According to his family and friends, Mr Nguyen was “beaten over the head and dragged into the back of a police truck”. He was then taken to a police station, but his current location is unknown. Officers reportedly turned up at his Airbnb rented flat two days later to confiscate his belongings, including his laptop, passport and credit cards. A spokesperson for the US embassy in Hanoi told the New York Times it was “aware of media reports” of Mr Nguyen’s detention, and that when a US citizen is held overseas “the US Department of State works to provide all appropriate consular assistance”.
Russian MP Tells Women To Avoid Sex With Foreign Men
A prominent Russian MP has been heavily criticised after urging women not to have sex with foreign men during the World Cup. Communist Party MP Tamara Pletnyova told a Moscow Radio station that she was “not a nationalist” but believed Russian women should avoid sex with people “of a different race” because “their children suffer”. She was responding to a question about the “kids of the Olympics” - referencing the claim that there was a spike in births of mixed-race children in Russia after the 1980 Summer Olympics. Ms Pletnyova said that these children were “abandoned” by their foreign fathers. “It’s not so bad if the fathers are
of the same race,” she said. “But if they are of a different race, then that’s it. [The children] are abandoned, and they stay here with their mother. We should be giving birth to our children.” Ms Pletnyova has been widely condemned online, with some people drawing parallels between her comments and Fifa’s Say No to Racism campaign. Recalling how a former ice skater defended a racist tweet by claiming her Twitter account had been hacked, radio presenter Tayana Felgengauer wondered if Ms Pletnyova might claim something similar had happened to her. “I wonder what Pletnyova will say when they remind her of Say No to Racism,” she tweeted.

World Cup Explodes Into Life With Russia Rout
The 2018 World Cup exploded into life yesterday afternoon as hosts Russia put five past a hapless Saudia Arabia in the Luzhniki Stadium in Moscow. Goals from Yury Gazinsky, Artem Dzyuba, Aleksandr Golovin and a brace from Denis Cheryshev fired the Russians to a resounding victory. Expectations were low heading into the tourna-
ment: former player Andrei Kanchelskis called the current side “the worst Russia team [he has] ever seen”. Victory over Egypt in their second game on Tuesday would virtually guarantee their place in the second round. Saudi Arabia, meanwhile, will probably be heading home early. They play group favourites Uruguay on Wednesday.
Harris: No Abortion Legislation Until Autumn Health Minister Simon Harris has said it’s unlikely legislation to govern abortion will be brought to the Oireachtas before the summer. The Government initially said, in the wake of last month’s referendum result, that the legislation would be brought to the Dáil before the summer recess. They did caution however that it would be “quite challenging” to do so. Speaking to reporters today Harris said the delay was due to a number of court challenges to the result of the Eighth Amendment vote. He said it was now looking more likely that the legislation would be brought to the Dáil in September. He said that if it was ready ahead of the end of TDs’ summer recess he expected opposition parties would agree to return early too. He said he didn’t envisage a delay in the actual introduction of abortion services and that he expected them to be in place from the start of next year. Three challenges to
the referendum result are due to be heard in the High Court on 26 June. Harris said that, as people have the right of appeal to other courts, an autumn date to bring legislation to the Dáil was becoming more and more likely. He said he wanted to make it clear to people who voted to abolish the Eighth Amendment that there was a huge amount of work going on “and we remain ready to introduce the legislation but more importantly to also introduce the services effective from January 1, 2019”. “My understanding based on legal advice is that as of today the Eighth Amendment remains in the Constitution until the President finds himself in a position to sign the Referendum Bill. Obviously that requires the legal process to be concluded.” The legislation would be ready to go to Cabinet in July, he said, adding that good progress was also being made in the drawing up of clinical guidelines and in the regulation of medication.
McGregor Expresses ‘Regret’ At Court Hearing
UFC champion Conor McGregor has been ordered to appear in a US court on July 26 in connection with an incident in New York which left two of his rival UFC fighters injured. Mr McGregor and his fellow UFC colleague Cian Cowley made a brief appearance at Brooklyn Criminal Court in connection with the attack on a bus after a press event at the Barclays Centre in Brooklyn on April 5. Assistant attorney general Janet Gleeson told the court yesterday that plea discussions are taking place, and the case had not been brought before a Grand Jury. Both Mc Gregor (29) and Cowley (25) attended the court hearing, which lasted less than a minute. Mr McGregor arrived to the Brooklyn courthouse in a black SUV and was greeted by a heavy police and media presence. Dressed smartly in a dark grey suit, he entered the courthouse only to emerge less than 10 minutes later, where he briefly addressed the
media. In a statement outside the court he said: “I regret my actions that led me here today. I understand the seriousness of this matter and I am hopeful that it gets resolved soon. Thank you very much”. Mr McGregor and Mr Cowley travelled straight to the offices of bail bondsman Ira Judelson to sign-in following the court appearance. Mr Judelson, who was also involved in the Harvey Weinstein bail process, said that Mr McGregor was very professional and had engaged with the legal process at every step. It is understood Mr McGregor and Mr Cowley will spend some time in New York before returning to Ireland. The fact that the case has not been sent before a Grand Jury means that the plea discussions are likely to be progressing behind the scenes. If Mr McGregor succeeds in striking some form of plea bargain, he could avoid jail or a fine.
Delhi ‘Unliveable’ As Dust Blankets City Residents of India’s capital Delhi are battling high pollution levels and extreme temperatures due to an unusual dust haze covering the city. People have been complaining about breathing problems, with many saying the city has become unliveable. The state government has responded by banning all construction and deploying the fire brigade to sprinkle water across the city. People have been advised to stay indoors as much as possible. “In this case, dust has become a carrier of toxic pollutants. Pollution levels are 8-9 times higher than normal. And when we breathe, we are taking in toxic substances, which can have serious health repercussions,” Anumita Roy Chowdhury, executive director of the Centre For Science and Environment, told BBC Hindi. Delhi is already one of the most polluted cities in the world but the recent weather pattern has caused more problems for its residents. Many have taken to social media
to share their concerns and are urging the government to do something about it. Experts say dust storms originating from the nearby desert state of Rajasthan are to blame. “This phenomenon is not uncommon in the pre-monsoon season,” Dr Kuldeep Srivastava of the meteorological department told the BBC. “But this time the haze has stayed unusually longer because of the delay in the arrival of seasonal monsoon rains.”

Review: Shawn Mendes On Shawn Mendes’ self-titled third album, the pop singer opts for anthemic choruses and vulnerability. There’s a specific sincerity the pop singer brings to catchy pop tracks that his pop peers don’t necessarily deliver on when they make the same attempt. With his latest effort, the 19-yearold singer moves beyond stereotypical relationship woes and goes for something more personal. His
impressive collective of collaborators - John Mayer, Ed Sheeran, Ryan Tedder, Julia Michaels and Khalid all help foster Mendes’ music into a more mature space. Mendes may have yet to approach the legal drinking age in the states, but his latest project shows he’s lived a few lifetimes since his 2015 debut.

The team at Torc Travel has plenty of advice when it comes to planning that holiday of a lifetime
Start Planning Early This will help avoid disappointment and to help secure better airfare and room allocations. At Torc Travel, we know which times of the year are the busiest for each location. We can help make sure that your dream honeymoon is being planned with sufficient time to ensure you get the best experience! It also ticks a box so you can concentrate on other wedding plans.
Set a Budget Ahead of Time As the wedding planning progresses and gets more and more costly it is very tempting to take from your honeymoon budget to put towards something else. But think about it, your honeymoon is going to be the first trip that you will take as a married couple and after all of the wedding planning you are not only going to want but deserve a dream honeymoon! We can help to show you what options are available for your budget and how to get the best value for it.
Work Together While dividing and conquering might come in handy for certain aspects of planning your wedding but honeymoon planning should be a joint effort in order to ensure both of your desires are met. You might like the idea of relaxing on a beach for 10 days but your spouse-to-be might have other plans. Make sure you both get a clear idea of what you want to take away from your honeymoon.
Be Specific About Your Wants It’s easy to say you want an “exotic destination” but everyone’s definition is different. Make sure you both are on the same page about what type of honeymoon you envision yourselves going on. We can help you narrow down your options to find the perfect fit for you!
Make Your Honeymoon Uniquely Yours We get it, wedding planning can be stressful! You hear your friends talk about what a great time they had on their honeymoon, it’s very tempting to simply copy and paste theirs. It’s okay to get advice from friends and family, but keep in mind this is your big-trip. At Torc Travel, we will take the stress out of the planning and still ensure that this is uniquely tailored to you.

Capturing Your Big Day On Camera YOUR wedding photographs are among the most essential mementos of your big day. Whether you go hitech or plump for a more traditional-style embossed
album, these pictures will capture the memories on camera for posterity. One of the first questions you need to ask yourselves is what style of wedding photography you would like. Photographers tend to use lots of different phrases to describe their photographic style – for instance, traditional, contemporary and reportage. Do plenty of research and ask a lot of questions when deciding on your photographer. They will be only too happy to show you samples of your work and, of course, numerous online browses of their websites will
also pay rich dividends. It is important to remember that many wedding photographers will incorporate more than one style on the wedding day so communication is key prior to and during the event. Personality is also a crucial element so make sure to sit down with your photographer so you are both aware of exactly what you want and exactly how your photographer can put you at ease so you are happy while he or she snaps away behind the lens. Oftentimes a wedding photographer will become a vital aide on your big day as he or she will have the experience to guide you through the rituals associated with the event. Traditional-style photography usually comprises carefully constructed or posed shots. The photographer will put some time into arranging each shot and poses can be quite classical. Contemporary wedding photography is somewhere between traditional and reportage. A contemporary wedding photographer will take time to set up each shot, interacting with the couple along the way, but the poses and locations can tend to be more dynamic than those in traditional photography. Reportage or documentary-style photography usually entails the photographer observing what is happening, and producing something of a “fly-on-the-wall” documentation.
Advice on choosing your wedding venue YOUR wedding venue is one of the most important aspects of your big day, with some couples even planning their entire nuptials around a specific venue. The first thing to take into account when choosing a wedding location is that there are likely to be two parts of your wedding to organise – the wedding ceremony and the wedding reception. As regards the ceremony, a church wedding is still the favourite choice for many couples, and most have a particular church in mind. In this case, the reception must be planned around the ceremony location. Factors such as ease of transport from service to reception will be important when planning your church wedding. Brides and grooms keen to exchange vows in a civil wedding have the option of choosing a venue that will host both the wedding ceremony and reception. The type of wedding you have will depend partly on how big it will be, so consider the venue capacity. It may sound obvious but many
venues will not be able to magic up extra space from nowhere if you add 40 extra guests at the last minute. You should have a good idea of numbers before you start looking at venues. Bands and other entertainment can take up a large amount of space, as can a dance floor, so decide when and where you want the entertainment to take place, and check with the venue that this can be done in the space available. Castles, country houses and stately homes are among the locations many dream of for their big day. If your budget can stretch to it, this offers a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to enjoy the use of a stunning building. There are so many different types of hotel that there’s likely to be something for everyone, from traditional to ultra-modern. Having accommodation on the spot is, of course, a big plus. Food and drink are among the main ingredients for a successful wedding reception, so where better to head than to a lovely restaurant or pub?

CACI Legs & Buttocks Treatment Cellulite is the term used to describe pockets of fat which are trapped and cause dimpling in the skin. This lumpy dimpling is irregular and patchy and is often compared to the appearance of orange peel or cottage cheese. 80% of post-adolescent women go on to develop cellulite at some time during their life, although it is hardly ever seen in men. The thighs, buttocks and the abdomen are the most common areas for a woman to develop cellulite. Although it is often mistaken for obesity, cellulite is not actually obesity-related because it can also take place in thin, lean women. Underneath the dermis and epidermis are three specific layers of fat. Cellulite tends to develop in the subcutaneous fat layers. This layer of fat is unique in its structure compared to the other layers because its fatty parts are structured into specific chambers by strands of linked tissue around it. To treat cellulite it is necessary to stimulate the area in order to reduce the volume of fat that has become stored and to kick-start the blood flow and circulation which has become metabolically sluggish. Faradic electrical stimulation uses specific electrical waveforms to mobilise the connective tissue surrounding the pockets of stored fat. This stimulation triggers lipolysis whereby the fat cells naturally start to release the stored fat. Our unique Electro Cellulite Massager (ECM) combines the therapeutic benefits of a massage, with the effectiveness of micro-current therapy. It has been de-
signed to pivot to the body’s contours and target your specific problem areas. The stimulatory action of the ECM helps to break down fatty deposits, tone muscles and reduce inches. The ECM attachment combines the therapeutic benefits of a massage with the effectiveness of micro-current therapy. The unique design of the Electro Cellulite Massager utilises twenty-four conductive rollers that are electrically charged with micro-currents. These rollers are designed to pivot to the body contours of each individual, targeting specific problem areas. The stimulatory action of the Electro Cellulite Massager helps to break down fatty deposits, tone muscles and reduce inches. A course of 10-15 treatments is recommended, with 2/3 treatments per week. This can vary depending on your individual needs and expectations. A monthly maintenance treatment is also recommended. Homecare advice: Apply CACI Cellufirm cream daily, morning and night. CACI Legs and Buttocks (ECM) Benefits: • Contours the buttocks • Lifts and tones the muscles • Improves appearance of cellulite • Breaks down fatty deposits • Stimulates circulation and lymphatic drainage • Smoothes skin • Helps create a tighter, brighter complexion For more information, call Jill on 064 66 32966.
These Are The Perfect Cruises To Suit Travellers, According To 1.8m Instagram Posts Lonely Planet Writer ANDREA SMITH reveals the perfect cruises to suit travellers. With such a variety of ships and itineraries to choose from, it can be hard to narrow down your options to just one cruise ship. Regardless of what you look for in your holiday away, there’s almost certainly a perfect ship for you, and a new guide has been published to help you narrow down the field. SeaHub, which compares prices and sells cruises, studied over 1.8 million Instagram posts tagged on various ships and ports around the world to build its guide. The aim is to help travellers pick the perfect combination, by examining which destinations are the most popular, what people seem to enjoy most while they’re away, and what seasons they should consider when planning a trip. The results indicated that Royal Caribbean came in first among cruise lines, with more than 630,000 tags. The rest of the top five included Carnival, Disney, Princess and Celebrity. When it came to individual ships, Royal Caribbean’s Harmony of the Seas
got more love on Instagram than any other ship. Carnival Vista, Celebrity Reflection, Disney Dream, Norwegian Escape and Regal Princess came top in their respective lines. When it came to destinations, places in the Caribbean earned the top spot as the most Instagrammed locations, including The Bahamas, Nassau, Florida and Miami. Other popular destinations included Cozumel, Mexico, Greece and Australia. Seafood and desserts were the most Instagrammed cruise foods and, perhaps unsurprisingly, photogenic cocktails were the most popular drinks to post. August was found to be the most popular month for heading out on the high seas. Fellow summer months like May and July were also popular, while January and February were among the least common times for cruise holiday postings. So if you have a destination in mind but aren’t exactly sure which of the many brands or ships might be right for you, check out SeaHub‘s findings on www. lonelyplanet.com.

There was also Irish dancing with Norrie King, circuits with Fitness with Edele in St Brendan’s gym and orienteering with Orienteering Kerry in the National Park. On Friday, the children did activities with Kevin Smith and his team of coaches from the National Learning Network Tralee’s Sporting Chance programme. This included hockey, parachute activities, team-building exercises, dodgeball, rounders, blindfold challenges, relays and obstacle course. They also tried their hand at playball with Playball Kerry and yoga. All of the kids received medals for their active participation on the day from Mrs Coffey. The following Thursday, the pupils took part in a fun walk in the National Park to raise vital funds for the school. Later there was zumba with Nataile Russell and camogie with Laura Collins from Kerry Camogie.
There was basketball with Patricia McCarthy on Friday, as well as swing dancing classes with Fiona O’Toole and a boxing and kickboxing class with Edele from Fitness with Edele. The fun and games concluded on Monday with a spinning class led by Tom Crowley in Spin Street, a tug of war with Vinny from Castlegregory Tug of War and a spot of taekwondo with Jason Moriarty. Well done to teachers, students and guest instructors on a successful week of activities!

The Right Herbs Can Make Garden Magic Any Meal Special Words: Debby Looney
Whether it’s curries, salads or drinks, herbs can add flavour and colour to almost any meal. Even if you are not a top chef, some well-chosen herbs and edible flowers can make any meal special. Nasturtiums are great in salads. Both the flowers and leaves are peppery to the taste. The seed pods can be used like capers and are delicious fried in butter with fish. Pansies and violas are often candied but can be added to sweet and savoury dishes. Calendula, known as poor man’s saffron, has long been used to add a yellow colour to food. As an addition to a salad it is tasty! Perhaps herbs are more versatile than flowers. Mint must be one of the most versatile of all! Chop it up and add to natural yoghurt, some garlic, cayenne pepper and cumin and you have a
delicious mint dip. Add to cous cous to give it a fresh lift. Of course, with lime it is the basis of a mojito! Mint comes in many forms, spearmint and peppermint are the old favourites, but try chocolate mint, apple mint, strawberry and pineapple mint for subtle flavours. Always bear in mind that mint can take over the garden, and maybe grow it in a pot. For me, the next most-used herb would be parsley. I never seem to have enough. I prefer the flat-leaved parsley as it does not have such a rough texture. In combination with coriander I use it in salsas, Moroccan cooking and Mexican dishes. Coriander and parsley in scrambled eggs is delicious. Parsley likes damp shady conditions and is in danger of going to seed in this warm weather. Coriander, likewise, goes to seed easily,
and is best sown at regular intervals. A real taste of summer is tarragon. I always forget about it until it finally shows itself quite a while after the winter! It is used in pickling, often with fennel or dill, and I use it a lot in salad dressings. Tarragon and chicken are a sublime match! Tarragon likes deep, rich, moist soil, and needs to be protected from slugs when it first appears. It also detests waterlogged soil. Lovage is another favourite. It is not that popular here but is used extensively in France and Holland. It tastes like a combination of parsley and celery, and is a great addition to soups and Italian sauces. Lovage grows into a large plant,

about 5 feet tall, so give it space! Both it and fennel are extremely hardy and are useful as shelter giving plants. One herb which everyone associates with summer is basil. Who doesn’t love the smell? Caprese salad is surely a summer treat. Many people ask me why they can’t grow basil but believe me, it is not easy! If the weather was always as it has been these past few weeks we would be fine. Basil does not like rain, humidity or temperature fluctuations. When growing from seed it is prone to damping off, as well as mildew and rotting. Unfortunately, unless you have a warm dry conservatory or glasshouse, growing basil is not really an option… Though we can hope that this weather lasts all summer!

Vettel Wins In Canada To Seize Championship Lead Ferrari haven’t won in Montreal since 2004, while Lewis Hamilton has made Circuit Gilles-Villeneuve his own during his F1 career. But Sebastian Vettel ripped up the form book with a dominant victory in the Canadian Grand Prix on Sunday to snatch the lead in the 2018 driver standings. The German was mighty in qualifying on Saturday and didn’t put a foot wrong come race day, crossing the line 5.7 seconds clear of Mercedes’ Valtteri Bottas, with Red Bull’s Max Verstappen completing the podium followed home by teammate Daniel Ricciardo and the second Mercedes of Hamilton. Vettel, whose Ferrari team brought an engine update to Montreal, had a slow start to the weekend but finally found his rhythm in qualifying and the result was a stunning pole position. He then carried that form into Sunday as he led the field from pole position at the race start. There wasn’t a happy end to Fernando Alonso’s 300th Grand Prix weekend. The double world champion had fought his way into the points after a poor qualifying but was instructed to retire his McLaren when the team identified an exhaust problem. Teammate Stoffel Vandoorne didn’t fare much better as he ended up 16th.

Calling Cars ‘Autonomous’ Is Dangerous, Warns Safety Organisation Assisted-drive cars are not autonomous cars. Motorists are being misled about exactly what the latest driver assist technology is capable of, sometimes with dangerous consequences, warns Thatcham Research. It is therefore calling for carmakers to think again about how they use the word ‘autonomous’ in describing the tech. The organisation says that today’s systems are assisted driving technologies, not fully autonomous systems. They are “still in their infancy and not as robust or as capable as they are declared to be” – despite carmakers using “misleading” names such as Autopilot and ProPilot. The problem comes where cars can take over some of the driving tasks, such as running and steering within lanes on motorways. The danger is that “the motorist may not be sufficiently aware that they are still required to take back control in problematic circumstanc-
es,” said Thatcham’s head of research Matthew Avery. Thatcham Research has now outlined these dangerous grey areas in a new publication, called ‘Assisted and Automated Driving Definition and Assessment’. Avery blamed carmakers for how they name and describe such systems. “Names like Autopilot or ProPilot are deeply unhelpful, as they infer the car can do a lot more than it can. Absolute clarity is needed to help drivers understand when and how these technologies are designed to work, and that they should always remain engaged in the driving task.” Thatcham Research wants it to be made clear that today’s systems are ‘assisted driving’ technologies, not ‘autonomous driving’ functions. “The use of the word autonomous in carmaker marketing and literature is lulling drivers into a false sense of security.”

Rally
Neuville Wins On The Final Stage Thierry Neuville won a thrilling Rally Italia Sardegna last weekend after edging WRC title rival Sébastien Ogier in a breath-taking final speed test shootout. The Belgian, driving a Hyundai i20, started the last 6.96km special stage trailing the Frenchman by 0.8 seconds. He stormed to fastest time, overturning the deficit to win by the same margin and extend his championship lead over Ogier. The results remained provisional after a bizarre incident at the finish of the penultimate stage when Ogier hurriedly departed in his Ford Fiesta without collecting his time card. It was later delivered to him by Ott Tänak, showing great sportsmanship. Ogier had to wait on whether he would receive a penalty which added to the excitement. A financial penalty was later handed down and the final result stood. Esapekka Lappi finished third in a Toyota Yaris, a further 1min 51.3sec behind. Craig Breen finished a strong sixth having claimed before the event that this was not one of his favourites and he lacked experience on the rally. Neuville won the final live TV Power Stage to claim five bonus points. Ogier took four points for second with Ott Tänak scoring three in third in a Yaris. Jari-Matti Latvala and Teemu Suninen, driving a Fiesta, took two and one point respectively. Kris Meeke and Paul Nagle’s absence was noted on the event. Where results were lacking for the axed Citroen crew, they were always going to challenging at the front and mixed it up. Hopefully we will see them back out on the WRC circuit in the future.

South Kerry Impress In Féile na nGael Campaign
The South Kerry U-14 hurling team (sponsored by Forrest Safety Solutions Ltd) with management who reached the semi-final of the John West Féile na nGael Division 9 competition last weekend.
The South Kerry U-14 Hurling Team (sponsored by Forrest Safety Solutions Ltd) arrived safely in Oran last Friday afternoon to play their first of two games against the home side, Oran, and North Wicklow Gaels. They made a good start to the weekend, defeating the home side comfortably in the first game on a scoreline of 5-10 to 0-07. The next game was a much more challenging encounter with North Wicklow Gaels. South Kerry were leading at half-time but a strong second half from the Wicklow side saw them claim victory, 0-08 to 1-02. On Saturday morning, South Kerry faced their host club, Claremorris, at 10.45am. A great performance saw the lads win 3-02 to 1-06 with goals coming from Jack Maguire, Tom Garry and Ciarán Collins with captain Charlie Keating contributing the two points. As a result of tehir performances, South Kerry qualified for
the cup quarter-final v Carrick-on-Shannon on Saturday afternoon. The Kerrymen started the game well and led by four points at the half-time whistle thanks to a goal by Ciarán Collins. The second half saw an exhibition in free-taking by Charlie Keating to seal another great win on a scoreline of 1-07 to 0-02. This was by far the best performance of the weekend. Best wishes on a full, speedy recovery to Nathaniel Doncel who suffered a neck injury in the dying minutes of this game. The cup semi-final took place on Sunday morning in Leitrim Gaels GAA. The Longford Slashers came out strong, pushing to a 1-06 to 0-02 lead at half-time, both points coming from Charlie Keating. South Kerry started the second half better with a goal from Cormac Rowe but, unfortunately, it was not meant to be. The Longford Slashers built on their first half performance to win 2-10 to 1-02.
This was a brilliant occasion for these young hurlers to experience and they did Kerry proud by progressing to the semi-final of the John West Féile na nGael Division 9 Cup Competition - a superb achievement. The team thanked their sponsors as well as all the families and friends for their support, host club Claremorris and official match reporter, Pat O’Brien (St. Pat’s, EK), for his live reports. South Kerry U-14 Squad: Sean Finnegan, David O’Leary, Ben O’Carroll, Jack O’Donoghue, Ross O’Leary, Darragh O’Connor, Michael Dennehy, Cormac Rowe, Sean Guerin, Charlie Keating, Luke Crowley, Caoilte O’Cronin, Matthew Fogarty, Hugh Walshe, Cian Twomey, Ciarán Collins, Brian O’Connor, Jack McGuire, Liam Mulhern, Sam Buckley, Nathaniel Doncel, Brandon Griffin & Diarmuid O’Connor, Tom Garry. O Star of the Sea help me and show me herein you are my mother. O Holy Mary, Mother of God, Queen of Heaven and Earth, I humbly beseech you from the bottom of my heart to succour me in my necessity. There are none that can withstand your power. O Mary conceived without sin pray for us who have recourse to thee (3 times). Holy Mary I place this cause in your hands (3 times) Thank you for your mercy towards me and mine. Amen. This prayer must be said for three days and after that the request will be granted and the prayer must be published. Thank you for favours received.

Help me now in these difficult times to find suitable employment. I have no wish to be without work. When I am employed obtain for me the graces to be faithful and diligent for the glory of God for my own good and that of all the people we serve. Ask God to give me health of mind and body and generosity in meeting the needs of others. I ask this through Christ our Lord. Amen. N. P.D.

PRAYER TO THE HOLY SPIRIT
O Holy St. Anthony, gentlest of Saints, your love for God and charity for his creatures made you worthy when on earth to possess miraculous powers. Miracles awaited on your word which you were ever ready to speak for those in trouble or anxiety. Encouraged by this thought I implore you to obtain for me my request (request). The answer to my prayer may require a miracle, even though you are the Saint of Miracles, O gentle and loving St. Anthony whose heart was ever full of human sympathy. NOVENA TO ST. ANTHONY O Holy St. Whisper my petition into the ear of the sweet infant Jesus who loved to be held in your arms and the gratitude of my heart will ever be yours. Promise publication.

Oh Jesus, has said all you ask the Father in my name, he will grant through the intercession of Mary, the Most Holy Mother. I humbly beg and urgently ask the Father in thy Name that my prayer be granted (Make request here) Oh Jesus who has said Heaven and Earth shall pass away but my word shall not pass away through the intercession of Mary, the most Holy Mother. I feel confident my prayer shall be answered. (Make request). This novena is to be said at the same time every hour for nine consecutive hours - one day. Promised publication, never fails. N.L.

Keane Corner Kick Seals Title For Celtic Words: Adam Moynihan Experienced midfielder Gary Keane scored a dramatic late winner direct from a corner kick as Killarney Celtic defeated Dingle in the 2017/18 Kerry Premier A League Final on Friday last. It was a remarkable way to clinch such a huge tie and it’s certainly a moment that will live long in the memory for Keane, his teammates and all the supporters in attendance. The hard-fought victory sealed the club’s first league title in five years and sets them up for a rare double: they’ll face the winners of Killorglin and Killarney Athletic in the Greyhound Bar KO Cup Final next week. The game itself was a tense affair with the Killarney side edging the opening exchanges, but Dingle improved in the second half and came close to breaking the deadlock on more than one occasion. The championship was hanging in the balance right until the death when Keane trotted across to take a corner at the Tralee Dynamos end of the ground. Keane swung in a dangerous, right-footed cross directly on top of the Dingle goalmouth and, to the delight of the green and white faithful in the

crowd, the ball evaded keeper Tomás Mac an tSaoir and nestled into the corner of the net. I spoke to Gary after the game and I was surprised to learn that it wasn’t his first time scoring from a corner. “I actually did the same thing a few weeks ago against Mastergeeha,” he explained. “I was haunted again but you know yourself, taking set pieces or corners all you’re trying to do is give your teammates the best delivery for them to score. I was as shocked as anyone to
see it go in. Sometimes it takes a bit of luck and fortunately we got it this time.” Eoghan Donnellan’s team held on to win by the narrowest of margins and it was no more than they deserved considering the season they put down. The Celts remained undefeated throughout the league campaign and ended up finishing 11 points clear of second place Dingle. All things considered, it was only right that they lifted the trophy. Players (myself included) have criticised the current league format in the past and Keane revealed that he’s of the same mind. “It’s the way the format has been so it’s not going to change any time soon,” he said. “But yeah, I think if you’re top of the table on points at the end of the season, you should win the league. You can see where the league are coming from, though, as finals bring a lot of money into the
KDL.” Keane was full of praise for his teammates and said he was hopeful that this success would motivate younger players to achieve more down the line. “It means everything to us as players to give back to the club, the management and the supporters. At the end of the day, it’s all about winning. After the pain we had the last few years, from losing semi-finals and finals, to win a final this year will hopefully make the youngsters want more.” Captain John ‘Smiley’ McDonagh accepted the trophy from Kerry District League Secretary John O’Regan and when the team arrived back in Killarney the celebrations continued well into the night. Congratulations to players, management, officials and supporters on a great season. Team: Mike Gustafik; Chris O’Leary, Chris Brady, John McDonagh (captain), Brendan Falvey; Danny Roche, Gary Keane, Matt Keane, Wayne Sparling; Cathal O’Shea and Peter McCarthy. Subs: Lee Downing for Sparling, Anthony O’Leary for Roche. Unused subs: David Spillane, Conor McCarthy, Stephen McCarthy, Pa McGrath, Micheál Devlin, Gary Vaughan and Jordan Leahy.

Spa Fall To First Defeat, Legion And Crokes Win Big Words: Adam Moynihan Spa’s perfect record in Division 1 fell by the wayside on Saturday evening as they suffered a narrow 2-10 to 0-17 defeat to bogey side Templenoe. A string of great saves by goalkeeper James Devane and two goals from Ryan O’Carroll kept the hosts in contention but Templenoe, who also knocked Spa out of the Intermediate Championship, held on for the win. Dr Crokes have now overtaken their near neighbours at the top of the table following a comprehensive nine-point victory over Kerins O’Rahilly’s in Lewis Road. Youngster Billy Courtney top-scored with 1-3 while dynamic duo Tony Brosnan and Jordan Kiely added five points each. Brian Looney chipped in with a brace and Johnny Buckley impressed in midfield alongside Eoin Brosnan. Both Buckley and centre forward Gavin O’Shea kicked a point each. Legion, meanwhile, picked up two crucial points by beating John Mitchels in Ballyseedy. Early goals by Jack O’Neill and Conor Keane propelled the visitors into a commanding first-half lead and despite a spirited Mitchels fight back in the second, Legion were always in the driving seat. A second goal by Keane, an excellent solo effort, sealed the victory and the Killarney side now have six points on the board with five games remaining. Elsewhere in Division 1, Dingle finally broke their duck by hammering Glenbeigh-Glencar on Sunday. Conor Geaney goaled twice in
a 3-8 to 0-6 triumph and this result means that the sides switch places at the foot of the table. In Division 2, there were away wins for Kilcummin and Glenflesk over Milltown/Castlemaine and Dromid respectively. Kilcummin are now just a point off the promotion places in fourth while Glenflesk are three points back in fifth. Dr Crokes’ Division 3 team beat Waterville 1-16 to 2-6 thanks in no small part to a Mikey Casey wonder goal and victories for Gneeveguilla, Firies and Fossa mean that the three East Kerry clubs occupy first, second and third in Division 4. There’s another full set of County League fixtures this coming weekend and the pick of the round is surely the Division 1 clash between fierce rivals Legion and Crokes in Derreen. These derby games are always keenly contested and tomorrow’s fixture should be no different. Throw-in is at 7.30pm.

Grab the remote and settle into your favourite armchair: it’s time to watch some football. There will be 64 games played at the 2018 World Cup and a whopping 56 of them will be broadcast live on RTÉ. (It’s not possible to show all 64 fixtures on the same channel as the final games in each group have to be played simultaneously). You never know which ties will turn out to be good value so the safest bet is to just watch every single one of them. It sounds like a big ask but when you break it down, it’s only 84 hours of football (excluding extra time and penalties). I think it’s fairly manageable - if you quit your job and break up with your partner/family. Here are some of the bigger games coming up in the next seven days and, foolishly, my predictions for each. Group B Portugal v Spain
Sunday, June 17 E: Costa Rica v Serbia (1pm - RTÉ 2 & ITV) F: Germany v Mexico (4pm - RTÉ 2 & BBC) E: Brazil v Switzerland (7pm - RTÉ 2 & ITV)

Wednesday, June 20 B: Portugal v Morocco (1pm - RTÉ 2 & BBC) A: Uruguay v Saudi Arabia (4pm - RTÉ 2 & BBC) B: Iran v Spain (7pm - RTÉ 2 & ITV)
Thursday 21 June C: Denmark v Australia (1pm - RTÉ 2 & ITV) C: France v Peru (4pm - RTÉ 2 & ITV) D: Argentina v Croatia (7pm - RTÉ 2 & BBC)
Tonight at 7pm (RTÉ 2 & ITV) The Iberian derby was already eagerly anticipated but the shock sacking of Spain manager Julen Lopetegui just 48 hours ago makes this one even more fascinating. The 2010 champions have underperformed in the past two major tournaments and Lopetegui’s departure will surely be a blow but their potential starting XI is exceptional on paper. De Gea in goal, Carvajal, Pique, Ramos and Alba at the back, Busquets holding with Thiago, Isco, Silva and Iniesta pulling the strings behind the villainous Diego Costa... That attacking midfield quartet is outrageous and I’m especially looking forward to watching Isco. The Madrid star has all the tools to shine on the world stage. Portugal may be the reigning kings of Europe but few expect them to be a force in Russia. They’re decent in attack but defensive frailties could cost them: the central defensive partnership of Pepe (35) and Bruno Alves (36) is an accident waiting to happen. Expect Ronaldo to cut a frustrated figure, much like LeBron James in the NBA Finals. Prediction: Portugal 1-2 Spain Group D Argentina v Iceland
Saturday at 2pm (RTÉ 2 & ITV) This is his World Cup. Lionel Messi will be the top scorer and Player of the Tournament and he’ll lift the trophy on July 15. Long-overdue statues will be erected in Rosario, and all of his many doubters back home will be silenced forever. Wouldn’t that be nice? Unfortunately, Argentina are incredibly weak in every area except for their front four (which is arguably the strongest in the tournament). If Messi does manage to drag his side to glory in Russia, it will unquestionably go down as the greatest achievement of his career.
Everyone’s favourite underdogs, Iceland, are the opposition in tomorrow’s opener and it will be interesting to see if our northern neighbours can repeat their heroics of 2016. A quick glance at their squad suggests that they might be up against it. Looking forward to three good Viking thunderclaps, though. Prediction: Lionel Messi 3-1 Iceland Group F Germany v Mexico
Sunday at 4pm (RTÉ 2 & BBC) Germany could well become the first team since Brazil in 1962 to retain the World Cup, a feat made all the more remarkable by the fact that they haven’t a good out-and-out striker in years. They’re blessed with talent elsewhere, however, and the excellent Toni Kroos could be a good outside shout to win the Golden Ball. Mexico generally tend to make the second round but they could struggle this time around. Their dependence on veteran forward Javier Hernandez is worrying. The Little Pea has barely started a game for West Ham in 2018. Prediction: Germany 2-0 Mexico Group G Tunisia v England
Monday at 7pm (RTÉ 2 & BBC) I’m going to throw out an unpopular opinion here: I hope England do well this summer. I know that revelling in the failures of the English football team is an Irish tradition dating back decades and yeah, 800 years and all that, but wouldn’t it be entertaining? There comes a point when the years and years of hurt (52 and counting) stops being funny and actually gets kind of tragic. Realistically, they’re not going to win it out but even making the semi-finals would suffice for them at this stage. And when they lose on penalties to France, we get to enjoy that too. Everybody’s happy. They surely (SURELY!) won’t have any trouble with Tunisia on Monday. SURELY. Prediction: Tunisia 1-5 England

The biggest show on earth is finally upon us. The 2018 World Cup kicked off yesterday in Russia and a month of (hopefully) exciting soccer action lies ahead. Adam Moynihan takes you through the A to Z of this summer’s tournament. A – Africa’s year?
In two words, probably not. Of the six African nations at this year’s tournament, Egypt (150/1 to lift the trophy) are the most likely to cause a stir, and their star player is a doubt for the group stage (see ‘S’). B – Brazil
It wouldn’t be a World Cup without a bit of samba magic and the seleção have the players (as always) to brighten up any fixture. Can Tite’s team bounce back from their darkest hour, the shocking 7-1 defeat to Germany in 2014? C – Cristiano
They might be the reigning champions of Europe but Portugal aren’t great. Expect to see plenty of shots of an exasperated Ronaldo throwing his hands in the air/ berating a flustered teammate. D – Dark horses
No outsider has ever won a World Cup and there’s no reason to think it might happen this summer, but it’s always nice to see traditionally weaker nations over-perform. Belgium must be the most hyped up dark horse of the past decade but they will struggle to make it past the quarters. Our neighbours, maybe? E – England
Roy Hodgson’s fledgling English side went into the last major tournament with virtually no expectations, yet somehow they still managed to make a show of themselves. Defeat to Iceland was great if you love to hate the English football team and with two of the weakest nations at the World Cup in their group (Tunisia and Panama), further embarrassment could well be on the cards. F – Fan favourites
Ireland aren’t at the party so who should we follow for the next four weeks or so? Nigeria always seem to bring great entertainment to the World Cup, and they also have the best kit (see ‘K’), so they’re not a bad shout. G – Goals
The art of defending is dead, if RTÉ’s senior analysts are to be believed, and the numbers from the last World Cup back actually back them up. 171 goals were scored in Brazil, which tied France ’98 for the most ever. Could the record be broken in Russia? H – Hooligans
It’s unfortunate but it seems as though fights between rival fans are inevitable, with the English and Russians apparently at the front of the queue. One Russian politician
has even called for licensed 20-a-side fights outside stadiums. (That is a real thing that a real politician said and not a headline from The Onion, by the way.)
references to the 2022 tournament in Qatar. (Still can’t believe that’s actually happening.)
I – Iniesta
Russian football fans don’t have the best track record when it comes to their treatment of players of colour. Hopefully racism doesn’t rear its ugly head during the World Cup but, realistically, it could. So serious is the problem, England full-back Danny Rose has asked his family not to travel over fears they could be racially abused in Russia.
This will be Andrés Iniesta’s last international tournament. What a story it would be if one of the greatest midfielders of all time led Spain to glory once again. J – Jealousy
It should have been us. When images of joyous Danish fans are beamed into our living rooms tomorrow evening (they play Peru at 5pm), try not to get too jealous. K – Kits
There will be some beauties on show in Russia, most notably Nigeria’s flashy bright green and white home shirt. I got my hands on one and will be wearing it every day from now until the end of the summer. L – Luzhniki
The Luzhniki Stadium (capacity: 81,006) will host the 2018 World Cup Final in addition to four group ties, one last 16 game and one semi-final. M – Messi
Is this it? Is it finally going to happen? You would need a heart of stone to not want Lionel Messi to lift his first World Cup trophy on July 15. If he leads Argentina to glory, any questions about whether or not he’s the greatest of all time will disappear forever. N – No-hopers
There are quite a few at this particular World Cup but plucky Panama appear to be particularly ill-equipped to compete at this level. They’ve played five games in 2018 to date and scored just once. O – Odds
France at 13/2 might be worth a punt but if you’re looking for something a bit more outlandish, how about Sergio Aguero to be top scorer? The Manchester City legend is 40/1. (Or keep your money in your pocket. That’s a good tip.)
R – Racism
S – Salah
The English Footballer of the Year suffered an injury to his shoulder in the Champions League final against Real Madrid and may not be fit to play in Egypt’s opener against Uruguay today (1pm). If available, Salah has the potential to shoot the lights out. T – TV coverage
The good news is that RTÉ 2 has coverage of every one of the 64 games (it will naturally have choose one when two games clash at the end of the group stage). The bad news? Well, it’s a question of personal taste but I cannot stand co-commentators Ronnie Whelan and Ray Houghton. Jim Beglin is good and Brian Kerr I can stomach, but Whelan (or Captain Hindsight, as I call him) appears to be the state broadcaster’s number one choice for big games. U – Unrest
The Dutch, perennial troublemakers, didn’t qualify so all eyes will be on the French camp. Les Bleus have a track record when it comes to player unrest, most notably at the 2010 World Cup in South Africa when the squad went on strike after an altercation beween Nicolas Anelka and coach Raymond Domenech. V – VAR
The Video Assistant Referee system will be used at a World Cup for the very first time. It will be called upon for key decisions in four areas: goals, penalties, straight red cards and mistaken identity. W – WAGs
The media’s obsession with the players’ wives and girlfriends seems to have waned somewhat in recent times but expect the WAGs (and children) of the winning team to make an appearance on the pitch after the final on Sunday, June 15.
P – Penalties
X – Xherdan Shaqiri
No World Cup would be complete without a penalty shootout. It’s cruel on the players but great for neutrals like us. It would also be great to see another ‘P’, a Panenka.
Nothing too exciting to report about Xherdan Shaqiri. ‘X’ is just a hard letter. Y – Young guns
Marcus Rashford (20) and Brazilian striker Gabriel Jesus (21) coud well shine, but 19-year-old France forward Kylian Mbappé is my tip to pick up the Best Young Player award.
Q – Qatar
Z – Ze Germans
The next World Cup is four years away but expect plenty of
You can never rule them out, can you? All jokes aside, if you can leave a player like Leroy Sané at home then you must be a serious outfit.

You can sponsor a virtual sod online at https:// www.krfc.club/sponsor-a-sod/ Tickets are available to purchase from any club member and we would appeal to all club members, supporters, players and parents to support this vital fundraiser.
Physical Aussies Outclass Ireland
Last weekend saw the Summer Internationals kick off in earnest with the Northern Hemisphere sides heading south to take on the likes of South Africa, New Zealand and Australia. Most importantly for Irish rugby fans, Joe Schmidt’s men travelled to Australia to take on the Wallabies in the first of three international friendlies over the next few weeks. As one can imagine there is nothing very friendly about a match between Ireland and Australia no matter the venue, and last Saturday morning was no different. Australia were immense. They were physical and by far the better side in a bruising encounter that lived up to the pre-tour hype. Ireland were favourites ahead of this series having won not lost in their past 13 matches, however returning flanker David Pocock took up from where he left off after an 18-month sabbatical and was sublime, scoring a try to boot. Ireland simply had no answer for him and in every position they were outclassed. Rob Kearney was beaten in the air and Rob Henshaw, who was returning from injury, ran out of the line far too much, creating overlaps for the Wallabies to exploit. Folau was spectacular, although his try was disallowed. The referee had a poor match but made poor calls for both sides to be fair. He certainly couldn’t be blamed for the visitors’ loss. In the end, Ireland lost 19 points to 9 and Joe Schmidt will have to think hard ahead of the second test, having rested his big names for the start of the first test. Carbery played well and we saw glimpses of what might
come between himself and Murray, though Murray kicked away far too much ball. Next weekend they have a chance to atone for last weekend’s errors and will need to dig deep to eek out a win against Michael Cheika’s men. Another mouth-watering match in prospect.

Paudie’s Former Teammates Come To Pay Their Respect Former international teammates and friends of the late Killarney basketball legend Paudie O’Connor travelled to Killarney this week to pay their respects. David Fitzsimons, Brian Milo O’Hanlon and Gerry Guihen, who all played with St Vincent’s Basketball Club (Dublin), met up with Paudie’s brother Séamie O’Connor and former St Vincent’s Killarney officer John Keogh. They visited the O’Connor family grave at Aghadoe and
recalled some of the many great basketball memories about Paudie. The three Dubliners enjoyed epic battles on the court against Paudie while David and Brian were former Irish international teammates of Paudie in the 1970s. Several stories about Ireland team trips were recalled, which included pre-Olympics qualifying tournaments in Heerlen (Holland) in 1972 and in Edinburgh in 1976. Some of the great Dublin v Kerry
clashes in the All-Ireland Inter-county Basketball Championships were also remembered while the Dublin men also said that Paudie’s innovative move to introduce the professional American players to the league in 1979 also inspired them to travel to the USA and recruit players. Some of the Dublin side’s better-known signings in the early 80s included Kelvin Troy and Kenny Perkins, father of former NBA champion Kendrick Perkins (Boston Celt-
ics, 2008). The visit to Killarney by the three Dubliners is just one example of the huge respect and admiration for the late Paudie O’Connor in Irish basketball circles. His recent funeral mass in Killarney attracted several former players and opponents from all over Ireland while the O’Connors have been inundated with messages of condolences and sympathy from all parts of Ireland and the USA since his death.
Camogie
Camogie Team Show Tenacity & Passion At Féile Killarney Camogie U-14 team had the time of their lives at the All-Ireland Féile 2018, club officials have revealed. The club have also expressed their gratitude to Moycullen Camogie whose hospitality was superb. The girls, they say, have made lasting friendships with the team. On Friday evening Killarney played two games against Craughwell and Edendork. The girls gave 100% on the pitch and Craughwell was a competitive game but Edendork was a different story as their side was just too strong. On Saturday the girls played their host club Moycullen in a nail-biting encounter that finished with the sides level. As they left the pitch, the team was greeted by the president of the Camogie Association, Kathleen Woods. After a few photos and a chat, the girls hopped on the bus again to head to Roscommon to play Crosserlough in the Shield quarter-final. Although beaten well, the tenacity and the passion the team displayed was inspiring. It was a tremendous experience with an abundance of camogie played
and an All-Ireland quarter-final appearance is a fantastic achievement. The club thanked Mary Ryan and the Stack family in Tricel, Jessica O’ Connor in Vodafone and Killarney Credit Union for their generous sponsorship and support. Best wishes to Cliona Lynch on her recovery from a knee injury sustained in the quarter-final. Well done to Killarney Camogie trainers Ceara Moore, Paul O’Brien and Pat Sheenan and to players Sarah
Looney, Yasmin O’Brien, Yen Leniston, Aimee Coffey, Clíona Lynch, Geraldine Murphy, Keelyn O’Leary, Ilona Sheehan, Lisa Lenihan, Clodagh Lucey, Jessica Bell, Anne Hickey, Heather Culloty, Alannah Houlihan, Chloe McCarthy, Áine Devlin, Éabha Lynch, Niamh Coughlan, Kathryn Ryan, Hannah Ryan and Tia McNabb. Congratulations to fellow Kerry side Causeway who won an All-Ireland Féile for the first time ever.
Congratulations to Killarney Celtic youngster Micheál Devlin who is set to become the first Irish player to play for Georgetown College in Kentucky. Micheál earned a scholarship by impressing on the Pass4Soccer Tour to North Carolina.

On The Ball Dr Crokes Club
County League Division 1 – Round 6, Dr. Crokes 1-17 : Kerins O’Rahillys 1-08. Played in Lewis Road on Saturday 9th June 2018. Despite our nine point victory this game was far from a runaway win as Kerins O’Rahillys had plenty of play but we were more economical with our shooting and three of our forwards scored 1-13 between them, Tony Brosnan 0-5, Jordan Kiely 0-5 and Billy Courtney 1-3. Johnny Buckley was also a huge asset to us at midfield where he got great support from Eoin Brosnan. Credit must go also to a good defence who had to be at their best to contain a very lively Strand Road forward line. Both teams managed only two points each in the first quarter even though neither team resorted to sweepers. It was hard to imagine that both teams would score freely in the remaining three quarters as we sent over 1-15 and our opponents 1-6. We got on top in the second quarter and a goal by Billy Courtney in the 23rd min-

minute helped us to lead 1-7 to 0-4 at the interval. Kerins O’Rahillys attacked strongly at the start of the second half and reduced our lead to a point after seven minutes of the third quarter. We got on top again and eight points without reply sent us nine points ahead. Both teams scored two points each in the last seven minutes to leave us comfortable enough winners at the end.

Fossa
LOTTO: 10th June 2018. Numbers drawn were 3, 8, 9, 13. There was no jackpot winner and Next weeks jackpot will be €4,050. SENIORS: Fossa had an easy win over Ballylongford on Sunday in the County League. Cian O’Shea opened the scoring with a point in the first minute, further scores from Paudie Clifford, Donald O’Sullivan and Tadgh O’Shea left Fossa in front by four points after 15 minutes. In the 17th minute Fossa struck for their first goal after Paudie Clifford won a kickout and careered through the Ballylongford defence before offloading to Tadgh O’Shea who finished to the net. Fossa kept up the pressure and lead at half time 1-09 to 0-03. Cian O’Shea again opened the second half scoring with a point before Paudie Clifford used all his timing and experience to score Fossa’s second goal and put the game beyond Ballylongford. Fossa continued to play with purpose and discipline and with goals from Chris Myers, Tadgh O’Shea and Lorcan Daly they finished easy winners on a score of 5-19 to 0-08. Fossa will be happy with the win, it was great to see Dara Rice back after exams and to have Daniel O’Keeffe back after injury, again it was a workmanlike performance where everyone played their part and hopefully they can bring this level of performance
into next weekend’s game away to Tarbert which is a huge game in terms of league placing and the prospect of gaining promotion at the end of the season. ENROLLMENT: Two Mile Community National School are currently enrolling for all classes for September 2018. Contact 064 6633018 or email principal@twomilecns.ie

Glenflesk
GLENFLESK SENIORS: (SPONSERED BY O BRIENS TOPOIL AND THE KERRYWAY). Our Senior team had a fantastic win away to Dromid Pearses on Sunday last in Rd 6 of the Co. League. An Alan Murphy goal mid way through the second half put us 6 points clear and we looked to be on the way to victory but Dromid Pearses came back strong and a goal approaching full time had them level. In the second minute of injury time Lee O Donoghue was given a chance with a free which he duly converted capping a fine display from him. The win leaves us in 4th place in the table with 6 points. FT Glenflesk 2 10 Dromid 1 12 GLENFLESK JUNIORS: (SPONSERED BY O BRIENS TOPOIL AND THE KERRYWAY). Our Junior team played a game in the East Kerry League and the Co. Junior league this week and came away with wins against Legion in East Kerry and Beaufort in the Co. League. Stephen Lacey was in great form in both games scoring 4 goals over the 2 games. We have 4 points from our 3 games in the Co. League with 2 games and we’ll need another 2 points to make the semi final. GLENFLESK LOTTO: No winner of the lotto which took place in The Kerry way on 5/6/18 Jackpot - €3600Numbers were 7 21 22 26. Killarney Legion
CO.LEAGUE DIV.1: John Mitchels 0-12 Killarney Legion 3-12. The trip to the fabulous John Mitchels complex proved to be a fruitful one as the seniors turned in a fine performance to do the double on the Tralee teams in the division. Built on a tremendous first half display and buoyed by early goals from Conor Keane and Jack O Neill they played with purpose and at a fast pace which saw them run up a commanding 2-9 to 0-5 lead at the break. It was near on a faultless half for them with some great defending and creative running by the forwards. As was to be expected the home side
started the second half in determined mode and registered 6 unanswered points to narrow the gap to just 4 pts. with 15 mins to go. The Legion needed to respond at that point and it took a lovely touch from Peter McCarthy when he slipped the neatest of passes to Conor Keane who backed himself to finish for his second goal of the game. Having steadied the ship they took control again and steered by Jamie O Sullivan at centre forward, who once again went through his repertoire of point kicking, added three more to give them a welcome win. One of the best scores of the day came from Damien O Sullivan who was soundness personified all day as he broke from the back and finished a lovely team move by driving over. No doubt the forwards have put in the work as their movement and work return was of the highest calibre with Peter McCarthy outstanding throughout. A huge contributing factor to the win was the input from Colm Ó Cúiv who hardly put a foot wrong in goal hitting his targets bang on every time. EAST KERRY JUNIOR LEAGUE: Glenflesk 1-18 Killarney Legion 2-9. FIXTURE: Co.League Rd.7 Killarney Legion V Dr.Crokes,Sat.16th.June at 7.30 p.m.in Derreen. LOTTO: Winning no’s - 2,9,23,25. No winner. Congratulations to Holy family NS Rathmore (Darragh Nagle, Fionn Murphy, Cathal O Donoghue) on winning the Munster title with a polished team performance. Paudie Dineen (teacher) deserves great praise for working with all players during the school year. Thanks to East Kerry/Ken-

45th Lily of Killarney: Congratulations to Carmel O Leary who was announced Lily of Killarney 2018. CO LEAGUE DIV 1 RD 6: Spa 2-10 Templenoe 0-17. Despite the cliché that goals win games, unfortunately this wasn’t the case when Spa suffered their first loss of the county league for this season. Losing by the narrowest of margins and at home was a double disappointment. Nevertheless, Spa were just unlucky on the day and both teams entertained the large attendance. EAST KERRY JUNIOR: Spa 1-14 Rathmore 1-10. Spa had a great win over a very impressive Rathmore side. We had a great mixture of youth and experience to pull off this win. Great saves by Conor Kerins who was outstanding between the posts. Scorers: Alfie Giles 0-1, Conor Gleeson 1-1, Paul Cahill 0-2, Darren O Connor 0-1, Corey Doyle 0-3, Mike Shannon 0-1, Mikey Moynihan 0-1, John Falvey 0-1 and Andy Fitzgerald 0-3. LOTTO: Numbers 6,8,18,23. Next week’s draw in the Oaks is €4,500. SPA GAA CLUB GOLF CLASSIC: Will be held on Friday 20th July 2018 at O’Mahony’s Point, Killarney. Mid-Kerry GAA
JUNIOR LEAGUE: Round 3 results, Glenbeigh/Glencar 317 Cromane 2-13. Beaufort 2-11 Miltown/Castlemaine 2-10. Laune Rangers – bye. Cromane 2-13 Glenbeigh-Glencar 3-17. A tough start which saw us trail by 2-5 to 0-2 after just 15 minutes meant we were always on the back foot in this game played in Glenbeigh this evening. However, we crept back into the game courtesy of two goals from Finbar Casey to narrow the gap to four, 2-11 to 2-7, with 15 minutes left. Another Glenbeigh-Glencar goal from Kieran Cahillane finished our interest in the game. On a positive note it was great to see Aaron Heffernan return to play after 15 months out injured with a double leg break. Well done on your recovery Aaron and welcome back, now for some training! Another note from the game was the age range of the team, going from 17-year-old Brice Dourieu to 44-year-old Colin O’Sullivan. That’s the beauty of B football. Well done lads, some lads are getting regular football and coming on with each outing. Keep at it. Round 4 continued last night with Rd 5 been played on Tues 19th June both games 7.30pm. Miltown/Castlemaine home to Glenbeigh/Glencar & Laune Rangers host Beaufort, Cromane – bye. Lee Strand U14 County District Cup Championship Rd 5 result Mid Kerry 4-12 Castleisland District 5-13. Keanes Supervalu Minor Football Championship Rd 1 sees Mid Kerry take on East Kerry on Tues 26th June at 7pm in Beaufort.
