Further strike threats at Liebherr | By Sean Moriarty

Industrial action at the Liebherr Container Crane factory in Fossa could escalate as SIPTU members have confirmed this week that they are planning one-hour rolling stoppages later this month. On Wednesday, approximately 50 electrical workers of the Connect Trade Union took part in a day-long strike from 6.30am to 8pm. However, the situation could worsen as members of SIPTU, the union that represents about 300 members

of the 800-strong work force, voted last month, to stage further one-hour walk-outs on March 25, from 7.30am to 11.30pm. It is understood SIPTU members did not pass Wednesday’s picket in support of their colleagues.

Workers, who are currently on a threeday week, are rowing with factory management over sick pay arrangements. They say, as a result of the three-day week, they have lost access to sick pay. The previous sick pay arrangement, they say, was replaced by a new scheme without consultation with the workers. Talks are on-going at the factory since the majority of the workforce were put on the reduced hours late last year but trade union bosses at Connect say these nego-

Locals say noise levels from nearby road are unbearable | By Michelle Crean Fed up residents in one Killarney estate say that continuous noise levels 24 hours a day from passing trucks and cars are making their lives a misery. Locals in Whitebridge Manor beside the N22 which is just outside their front doors, say the nearby road has become so busy day and night that it’s now hard to get a good night’s sleep. At their wits end, they’re now calling on the Council to install a sound barrier and to resurface the road which they say is so worn down it’s making the sounds louder. The issue was brought before the Council at a recent meeting in Killarney by Cllr

The Board of Managing Directors of Liebherr Container Cranes, said in a statement issued to the Killarney Advertiser, that the company’s priority was to protect its future against this rising global competition. “Liebherr is disappointed with the strike action which has taken place and remains open to discussion with unions on how to address the increased competition that the company faces,’ the statement read. “Management must at all times honour the existing agreements on how discussion and agreements with both unions take place. All the houses facing the road have put in double glazing windows – we’ve had to put them in because of the noise. We’re fed up. The traffic is constant – it’s going all the time. If I wake up at 6am it’s busy. The passing trucks are massive and they’re all going early in the morning.” Kerry County Council said that Noise Assessments will be carried out this year at a number of locations, including along the N22 at Whitebridge.

Killarney's An Óige hostel wins Experts Choice Award Killarney International Hostel was a big winner at the recent 2019 Experts’ Choice Awards after walking away with the Best of Killarney award. Now in its fourth year, the Experts’ Choice Awards is much sought after in the travel industry as awards are based on professional expert reviews. Fewer than two percent of hotels and hostels worldwide receive a prestigious Experts Choice award. The hostel is owned and operated by An

Óige – Irish Youth Hostel Association and this week Manager John Claffrey, who has run the business for the past 27 years, said they are thrilled with the news. “It’s always great to get nominated for an award but to win one is even that bit more special,” he told the Killarney Advertiser.

“What makes these awards even more special is that they’re based on the reviews of industry experts so they obviously found our hostel to be of top quality and a great experience which is exactly what we always want to hear.” The hostel itself is housed in an 18th century mansion and set of 75 acres of gardens and forest overlooking the mountains and Killarney National Park. It is considered one of An Óige’s most environmentally friendly hostels as almost all

waste produced by the hostel is recycled or composted. The hostel, located just off the Fossa road, opened in 1959, with an ethos of bringing groups, including disadvantaged children from urban areas to the countryside for a break, John explained. “We open eight months of the year and cater for 137 in the high season. We cater for groups only during the low season for four months.” It isn’t the first time that the hostel has received acclaim as it was previously shortlisted in the Top 5 ‘Favourite Irish Hostels’ as voted for by the readers of TNT Magazine in 2012. He added a huge thanks to everyone involved in running the business including the dedicated staff. “It’s nice to be recognised and we thank everyone involved.”

Jury returns verdict of accidental death | By Anne Lucey

A garda expert has criticised road signage as well as the 100km per hour speed limit at a pedestrian crossing on the N22 where a student was killed while walking towards her mother’s car at Glenflesk village, Killarney on December 1, 2017. The Cork to Killarney bus stops in the village the inquest into the death of UCC student Denise Crowley (26) of Gortarrig, Headford, Killarney was told. The evening was dark and foggy and Ms Crowley, a computer science student, had gotten off the bus, waited for some moments by a wall, made phone calls, then put away her phone, pulled up her hood and fixed her bag on her back and began to cross the road to the church. She was three-quarters across when struck from the right by a car at around 7.15pm. Clear and good quality CCTV had cap-

tured much of the incident. Garda Public Service Vehicle (PSV) inspector and forensics examiner, Garda James O’Brien said it was “incomprehensible” to him that a pedestrian crossing designed for “wheelchair users, children and the visually impaired” was governed by a 100km per hour speed limit. A metal road sign comprising of a pole and blue disc at torso height, in place to guide motorists away from the footpath at the location had obscured views of the road, the garda also found. The pedestrian was obscured from the car by the sign and the car was obscured from the pe-

destrian by the same sign. CCTV showed Ms Crowley looking to her left, the Killarney side, as she crossed the road but it did not appear she looked to her right. The driver, Gerard Hourigan, was travelling between 51km and 60km an hour and did not have enough time to take avoidance action, Garda O’Brien said. In her deposition, read by Garda Supt Flor Murphy, Grace Crowley, who was visibly upset in the stand, told how she had gone by bus from Glenflesk to Cork that morning to visit her husband Denis at CUH and returned to Killarney by bus. Denise had an assignment to hand in at UCC and took a later bus home. Ms Crowley met her sister Mary in Killarney and did some shopping. As they made their way to Glenflesk Church to collect her car, they noticed something black on the road. “I said out loud, “that could be my daughter”, she said. She rang her daughter’s

phone and a man answered and said there had been an accident. Glenflesk was “the regular spot for students to get off and on the bus,” she said, and Denise was home every weekend. Alan Hourigan, a front seat passenger in the car driven by his father Gerard, told of their shock and of how he got out and checked for Denise's pulse. Hearing Grace Crowley at the scene saying “Denise come back to me” was one of the most difficult things for him, Alan Hourigan said. The report from Dr Margot Bolster, pathologist, found death would have been very rapid. The jury returned a verdict of accidental death as a result of a road traffic accident. Coroner, Aisling Quilter, said she was recommending a lower speed limit. At the end of the inquest the solicitor for Gerard Hourigan conveyed his condolences to the Crowley family.

Killarney mother plans to celebrate World Down Syndrome Day | By Sean Moriarty Next Thursday World Down Syndrome Day takes place across the globe - and one Killarney woman plans to take part to raise awareness and funds.

Simone Leahy, whose 20 month-old daughter Emilie has Down Syndrome, is planning a coffee morning in the Cahernane House Hotel next Thursday, March 21, from 10am to 12.30pm. She said both she and her sister-in-law Nicola Browne want to raise awareness of World Down Syndrome Day, and to raise funds towards the Kerry Branch of Down Syndrome Ireland. “It’s a world celebration of every person with Down Syndrome and their families,” Simone told the Killarney Advertiser this week. “The date is special as it is the 21st day of the third month - which signifies the three copies of the 21st chromosome which leads to Down Syndrome.” The events worldwide help to raise public awareness and create a single global voice for advocating for the rights, inclusion and well-being of people with Down Syndrome, Simone, who is married to

Noel Leahy, added. “With Emilie you go into a whole new world but you’re not excluded. It’s only been a short journey, but it’s been a wonderful one. We’ve made new friendships with people.” Simone said the Kerry services, which are run through a centre in Tralee are amazingly supportive - but they receive no Government funding of any kind. She’s hoping that the coffee morning will raise funds adding that she has seen Emilie come on so much since using the service. “There’s 235 members in Kerry. It relies completely on donations. Emilie receives subsidised physio and speech and language therapy and is learning to stand up on her own. One of the big rollouts is Lámh, which is modified sign language while speech is delayed and we get training in that. She’ll benefit from the centre for years to come.” To get World Down Syndrome Day trending on the day make sure to join in the ‘lots of socks’ campaign by taking pictures and videos and posting them on social media using the hashtags #LotsOfSocks, #WorldDownSyndromeDay and #WDSD19.

Killarney’s own talented singer/songwriter Cathal Flaherty is the only Irish person to make it to the final of the International Song Writing Competition – beating off almost 19,000 entries. The 25 year-old, who is known throughout the town for his musical talents, has had his song ‘A Thousand Miles’ whittled down to the final 14. However, it’ll be next month before Cathal knows if he has won the €25,000 prize and a chance to record an EP in Nashville, the music capital of America. And he’s also elated this week as his catchy tune has been receiving national air time thanks to RTE 2FM’s Eoghan McDermott. It’s also getting some time on the air waves on Radio Kerry, where Cathal works, as well as RTE Radio 1 Today FM and Spin South West and others. The song was recorded in 2017 at a studio in Faha owned by Brendan O’Connor from Truly Diverse, Cathal explained. “I forgot I entered it until I saw an email in my spam folder,” Cathal told the Killarney Advertiser this week.

“I’m surprised I got this far but I knew it would do well. Celebrity judges in this year’s competition include The Script, Tom Waits, Adam Lambert and Bastille who won the competition a few years ago.” Cathal, who released an EP in May last year in the Acoustic Club in the INEC, saw it reach huge success as it went to number two in the Irish iTunes pop charts and number five in the overall iTunes album charts. He has also supported Tears for Fears, Little Hours and Mikey Joe Harte. And apart from the overall prize, Cathal also has a chance to win other prizes in the competition. Local school leading the way in digital technologies for teaching and learning Local school children are becoming logical thinkers and problem solvers at a much younger age thanks to the introduction of a new after schools programme. Holy Cross Mercy Primary School hosts an afterschool STEM (Science Technology Engineering and Maths) club for Senior Infant pupils where children are introduced to science experiments including making slime and building electrical circuits and engineering by designing and building various structures such as bridges and houses using maths. Principal of Holy Cross, Ursula Coffey, welcomed the announcement of funding for all schools for the purchase of key technologies including iPads, smart displays and airplay devices for the school. “It will allow us to build on and expand the amazing work being done in our school in the area of digital technologies for teaching and learning,” she said. Holy Cross is a school of Digital Distinction with Technology and STEM (Science Technology Engineering and Maths) playing a central role in learning

throughout all classes in the school, she added. “All classes have access to iPads with over 100 devices in the school. Parents and teachers communicate through their child’s Digital Learning Journal Seesaw and are updated daily with

snapshots of their child’s learning. Children from Junior Infants right through to Sixth class learn 21st century tech skills within their classrooms with every child having access to iPads daily. The students will also work together on different aspects of coding including Scratch and Beebots to enable them to become logical thinkers, problem solvers, collaborative learners and to foster and encourage creativity.” The Holy Cross Mercy also has a STEM

Killarney plans to turn green for St Patrick’s Day Many of the town’s famous landmarks will be turning green this St Patrick’s Day - including Killarney courthouse for the first time. An exciting weekend of activities is planned in the community as the St Patrick’s Day committee have been beavering hard behind the scenes to make it one to remember. A family fun zone will take over the

Circus workshops and Brickx Club are also available at Beech Road Lower car park. “The festival is shaping up to be a huge community event culminating in a celebration of Killarney, the circus - ‘The Greatest Show’,” Chairperson Paul Sherry said. “The committee are delighted that two travelling bands are registered. One marching group from our twinned town Pleinfeld will be joining the festivities and another from Ochsenhausen in Germany. This group will consist of

40 participants and some members of the group are employees of Liebherr in Germany.” He said that they are delighted with the level of interest and interaction with a host of community groups and sporting groups. “We would encourage everyone to get out early on the day of the parade and join in what will be a spectacle for the whole family.” In consultation with the County Council and the Gardai the committee have drawn up a full safety strategy and traffic management plan for the parade. The committee advise that the parade floats and vehicles have to arrive at Mission Road from Port Road and Cathedral Place side. Traffic will not be allowed to travel down Mission Road towards the cathedral. Post-parade collection point for children is the Beech Road car park Lower at the bottle bank area. The organisers have requested that all parents and children enter the fun zone collection point area as quickly as possible from parade for safety when they reach the route end. Extra free parking facilities have been included at Penney’s car park, Hilliard House, St Brendan’s College Secondary School and The Community College, New Road.

Columnist ANNE LUCEY gives her take on happenings in Killarney, Kerry and beyond

The old high standards associated with Aer Lingus are barely hanging on Air travel is much in the news and Aer Lingus, the Shamrock carrier, has recently got a new look. The old green back has gone white and the green is confined to a lighter shade of shamrock - mainly at the teal coloured tail end. But is it just the shamrock associated with St Patrick that is diluted? We are coming up to Paddy’s Day and I question how much Aer Lingus reflects the best of the national character anymore. Should the now British-owned airline be allowed trade at all on the respected shamrock? The doubts in my mind are sown not just in the mealy-mouthed language of the new branding - the shamrock is still “the hero of Aer Lingus", we were told . But the doubt too is also firmly rooted in the discourteous and rough treatment meted out to passengers whose flights have been cancelled by Aer Lingus in recent times. I had the experience myself at Charles de Gaulle airport in Paris on Monday when the early afternoon flight to Cork was delayed and then cancelled altogether. The news was relayed by badly composed text messages in poor English. The delay was “reactionary to earlier weather” was the first message. Passengers were already waiting at the boarding gate at the Aer Lingus terminal in the Paris airport Terminal 1, at the end of a very long walk.

The sole black-suited ground handling staff member was of no help and ran for cover. The Aer Lingus website went down and the phone helplines were not picking up. Those of us who had managed to book the later Dublin flight were forced back out to haul luggage through the exit and then come back again through check in and security, ending up on exactly the same lounge. A long, unnecessary haul, partly because the Aer Lingus check-in online was out of action. There was simply no one to help. My

daughter who managed to get through to a Dublin voice from her base in the south of France got very rude and offhand treatment. Twitter lit up with the topic. The fun does not stop there. This was only the first cancellation. The Dublin flight was delayed and by the time we got into the capital, the Kerry leg was cancelled too. There was no proper handling by Aer Lingus at either Charles de Gaulle or in Dublin and conflicting and contradictory statements from Aer Lingus about the reasons for the Paris cancellation. While the text to passengers indicated weather as the cause, a press statement insisted it was due to a technical fault! I got no reason for Kerry - but assume it was weather. With the announcement by the British Government on Wednesday of how they will work the tariffs - none on goods across the land border but tariffs on everything sold from the South into the UK, the beef

and dairy industry looks set to collapse overnight. The British have moved cleverly and strategically and the provisions may actually provide and injection for the North. But for the South the tariffs will be a disaster. Share prices are bound to fall, at least for a while, in food industries, and one wonders about Kerry Group and other valuable shares, however global. Ditto the price of land here, whatever about housing. The ports in the North will surely benefit, and traffic in our ports

will drop. Surely processing plants will move from the South to the North too to get around tariffs. Food is perishable - remember how quickly the sugar factory was disbanded in Mallow? Our head has been in the sand in adopting the position of simply standing up for the North, once again, and being inflexible. While scoffing at the Brits, we have been outsmarted. Hard-line Sinn Fein, disgracefully, stuck in their outworn rhetoric, have refused to take their seats in Westminster. Their

My question is, by “modern” does the airline mean less human? Aer Lingus is not State owned. And when Brexit happens, British-owned Aer Lingus will not even be European. The shamrock is still “the hero of Aer Lingus,” according to the company. This makes no sense and the message it is trying to convey, rather badly, of solid Irish values of human warmth and understanding, is not being upheld by them. The company should be challenged on the continued use of the shamrock. It is high time this State stands up for its symbols - and maybe strips Aer Lingus of its shamrock. A mon avis. presence could have made a lot of difference. Fine Gael and Fianna Fail have slipped. They have been outplayed. Leo and Simon and Michéal could and should have anticipated the “bombshell” provisions announced by the UK this week. They appear not to have paid enough attention to the Brits - incomprehensible in the case of Simon Coveney, especially, given his previous office in Agriculture. In 1969, the trouble in the North led to the collapse of the tourist industry here. Let’s hope this important 26 county industry has not been sacrificed for the sake of the six - yet again. The North is not ours. It belongs to a different country and we would have been wise to acknowledge the British ownership of that part of Ireland.....in the current climate.

Sr Pauline left a lovely lasting legacy in Killarney The last surviving member of the McShain family, who gifted Killarney House and Innisfallen Island to the Irish State, has died. | By Sean Moriarty Sr Pauline McShain, aged 91, the only child of John and Mary McShain, died last week in Philadelphia, bringing to an end the direct link between the McShain family and the American city. This week, Kerry County Council opened a Book of Condolences in the reception area of the Killarney Municipal District Offices as a mark of respect. John McShain was one of America’s prolific builders, active in one of the few growth areas during the Great Depression of the 1930s - government contracts. Having earned the respect of President Roosevelt, Mr McShain won contracts

to build the Bureau of Internal Revenue, the Department of Agriculture, the Bureau of Printing and Engraving, the Jefferson Memorial, the Longfel-

Accepting this gift, the Irish officials agreed to preserve Killarney House and Gardens and was incorporated into the Killarney National Park. John McShain died in 1989; the death of his wife Mary occurred in 1998. It is the end of an era for the McShain family both in the USA and in Killarney,” Margaret O’Regan of the National Parks and Wildlife Services said. “The Irish people, and especially the people of the town of Killarney, are indebted to John, Mary and Sr Pauline McShain for the wonderful ‘gift’ of Killarney House and Gardens, Ross Castle, Innisfallen Island the Middle and Lower Lakes of Killarney. [It is] their legacy for generations to come to enjoy.” Sr Pauline kept regular updates on the restoration of Killarney House and Gardens, a place where she and her parents always referred to as their ‘Irish Home’. Up to the time of her passing she still kept in touch with Killarney and sent a lovely letter on the opening of the new Interpretative Exhibition last September.

Coroner for south and east Kerry, Aisling Quilter, said a post mortem had found that Ms Few, of Phoenix, Arizona had died at the Gap of Dunloe on April 9, 2018, of blunt force trauma due to a fall on rocks from a pony and trap, causing

traumatic brain injury. The coroner said she was adjourning the inquest. Meanwhile, Ms Few's partner Normand Larose (62), originally from Canada and living in Phoenix, Arizona, was also killed. Last August, the inquest into the death of Mr Larose opened in Killarney for the purposes of issuing a death certificate. Death was the result of blunt force trauma with severe brain injury due to a fall onto rocks from a pony and trap on April 9, 2018, the inquest heard. It too was adjourned. The couple were on an Easter family holiday with Ms Joy’s daughter, son-in-law and grandchildren travelling in a separate trap.

Organisers on a high after successful Mountain Festival Organisers of this year’s Killarney Mountain Festival have hailed the weekend’s events a huge success. Now in its second year, the Killarney Mountain Festival, which focuses on adventure and mountaineering, attracted visitors from all over Ireland and the UK. The festival was opened on Friday night by Minister Brendan Griffin in the Café Du Parc, the event’s headquarters for the weekend.

“The endless hours and months of hard work really paid off and the event was an even bigger success than last year’s,” event chairperson Maureen Hegarty said. “Basecamp, was a hive of activity, from food vendors, family fun all day, climbing wall, bouncy castles and fairground rides, to inspirational talks by adventurers from

near and far. Throughout the weekend, we were treated to life changing stories and lots of fun. Saturday night saw the return of Super Ceili and The Constituents, all the way from Arlington, Virginia.” 200 runners took part in the 10k run on Sunday, which was organised by Hardman events. A children’s adventure event on Saturday morning hosted over 80 youngsters and they also enjoyed a weekend of arts, crafts, treasure hunts and virtual walks of

Carrantuohill. Killarney Mountain Festival is inspired by a similar event in Kendal, Cumbria, one of Killarney’s twin towns, she added. “We visited Kendal Mountain Festival in November and we were thrilled to see that some of the visitors to Kendal also made their way here to Killarney. This is what it is all about. Killarney is twinned with Kendal and this started as a twinning initiative. It was lovely to see a fine representation of guests from Kendal in the audiences over the weekend. “It is now time to take a breath, before the planning starts all over for 2020. We have a small but very hardworking committee and we could not run the festival without their help and support, as well as the help and support of all our sponsors and patrons.”

Fishing competition planned in Killarney The Lough Lein Anglers Association, one of the longest established fishing clubs in Ireland, will host its 32nd annual charity open fly fishing competition on April 28. The event, known as ‘The Charity’ will take place on Lough Lein, from Ross Castle in Killarney National Park with funds this year going to the National Rehabilitation Hospital (NRH) in Dún Laoghaire Co Dublin. Since its inception in 1987, the Lough Lein Anglers Association and its supporters have raised over €229,000 in Kerry and Cork. Chairman of ‘The Charity’ organising committee, Timo O’Sullivan, is an avid angler, volunteer with many organisations in Kerry, and a wonderful advocate for wheelchair accessibility. It is 35 years since an accident at work resulted in Timo sustaining life changing injuries and

leaving him wheelchair bound. “The treatment and the expert care and lifelong friendship I received from staff at the NRH, has enabled me to carry out every aspect of daily life to the fullest extent,” he said. “35 years on, and I am involved in many volunteer organisations in Killarney, beekeeping is my new passion,” Timo, who spent six months in the expert care of the NRH following his accident in 1984, said. Building has commenced on a new state of the sports arena, rehabilitation facilities and 120 patient bedrooms, with the project expected to be completed by 2020. “Our association has, following discussions with the NRH Foundation, agreed to expand the fundraising efforts of this year's charity. Our aim is to raise €58,000 which is the cost of equipping 26 of the 120 bedrooms. As well as ‘The Charity’ the NRH has been chosen as a

Local chefs learn from Ireland’s best Commis chefs from several top Kerry hotels were given the chance to work with some of Ireland’s best chefs in The Gleneagle earlier this week.

Head Chef of The Brehon, Chad Byrne, brought the event together and MC’ed the evening. The five senior chefs were ‘More Than Fed’ founder Jonny Davison, Castle Leslie’s Philip Brazil, the Aviva Stadium’s James Smith, Cacao Barry Ambassador Erik Van Der Veken, and James Coffey from The Park Hotel Kenmare. Great night of song and dance in Fossa

The Kerry County Board of Comhaltas Ceoltóirí Eireann held an evening of music, song and dance in Fossa on Saturday night. Musicians of all ages entertained a packed house in the Innisfallen Hotel, which included a visit from the Beaufort Biddy Group and students from ‘The Sem’, famous for their impromptu session on board a Ryanair flight from Stansted to Kerry in January. “It was great to see so much young talent in one place,” Tim Kissane, Fossa/ Two Mile chairperson said. “The Boys from ‘The Sem’ made a special guest appearance and gave a rousing rendition of Caledonia. Fear an Tí, Mick Myers did a fantastic job on the night, making sure that

everyone got a chance to perform, he added. “There was set dancing, step dancing and Sean Nós dancing. We had singers and storytellers that came from far and wide. The committee would like to thank everyone who participated or helped in any way on the night. Special mention to Mike Jack Cronin who played great music and supported those performing, the staff of the Innisfallen Hotel for accommodating such a large crowd, and to all who supported the raffle.”

The group are currently in the final stages of rehearsal for their forthcoming production of Jimmy Keary’s comedy 'The Two Loves of Gabriel Foley', which they’ll take to the CYMS Community Hall from April 3 to 5, and again from April 10 to 12. Doors open at 7pm and curtain will rise at 8pm sharp. ‘The Two Loves of Gabriel Foley’ is set in Aggie Foley’s farmhouse in rural Ireland. Aggie is close to 70 and is keen that her only son, Gabriel – now past 40 – will find himself a wife. Gabriel, who is played by Donal Piggot, is not opposed to the idea and to improve his chances, joins the nearby town’s newly established drama society - ‘The Prince of Denmark Players’. There he meets Hazel, played by Irene Kavanagh, and quickly becomes infatuated with her, much to the displeasure of Chrissie McCabe, played by Martha Fleming, from the neighbouring farm, who has always had her eye on Gabriel. When circumstances warrant that a rehearsal has to be held at Gabriel’s home, the action shifts into full comic

gear, with neighbouring farmer, Liam Gavigan, played by Brian O’Sullivan, and Aggie’s sister, Lucy Lacey, acted by Gina O’Shea, playing their part in stirring the pot. Adding spice to the mixture are the posh writer and director, Morag Dellamere played by Sarah Pigott, and Clive Snell played by Mike Moriarty, a self-important member of ‘The Prince of Denmark Players’ who, coincidentally, also has his eye on Hazel. The part of Aggie Foley herself is played by Bridget Cahillane. The play is directed by Brendan Reidy who is no stranger to drama. Brendan was a thespian with the Sliabh Luachra Drama Group for many years before moving to Killorglin and getting involved in the CYMS Players, and brings his own unique style of direction and stunning set design to this production. The Padre Pio Prayer Group from Killarney attended the film screening of 'We’ll Rise at Dawn' last week, in the Omniplex in Tralee. The screening was organised by Marian Pilgrimages and tells a beautiful story of two young boys who decide to write a book about Padre Pio and travel around on their bicycles getting testimonies from those that have known Padre Pio and witnessed his miracles.

Tess Doona from Kilgobnet, Beaufort celebrated her 70th birthday in fine style with a party at Kayne’s Brasserie at the Dromhall Hotel on Sunday night. And it was a night she’ll remember for some time to come as husband John this week told the Killarney Advertiser that they had a fantastic evening together. Tess was joined on the night by her husband John, daughter Paula Cronin and her husband Liam, son Thomas and his wife Catherine, and their other daughter Therese West and her husband Damien,

seven grandchildren, and sisters Norrie O’Sullivan, Eileen Brosnan and family from friends gathered from near and far. “It was a lovely, fantastic night,” John said. Tess is originally from the Castleisland area and ran the popular Holly Bough Guesthouse on the foothills of Carrauntoohill. However, she’s now happily retired from her successful business.

Gardening is all about forward planning The weather still seems very cold for planting out, but it is high time to get your autumn colour in order! I know, it doesn’t feel like spring yet, and here I am talking about autumn. What we must remember though is that gardening is all about forward planning. In the same way we plant our daffs and tulips in September, we must plant our dahlias now. Dahlia tubers can be bought in shops and garden centres at this time of year, and are much more cost effective than buying plants later. Dahlias grow from tubers, which are thick underground stems that store the plant’s energy for the next year. They do not look like there is life in them, but don’t worry - there is! Plant them with the top of the tuber at ground level. If you have kept your own over from last year, you can divide them. Plant the tuber in a pot, leaving it to grow until eyes or buds form. Then you may determine which tubers are viable. Separate with a sharp knife and plant as normal. Dahlias are quite susceptible to frost damage, so plant them in pots where you can keep an eye on them. Alternatively protect with horticultural fleece, which, incidentally is the gardener’s best friend in March! Other plants which are better value planted as bulbs or corms include Crocosmia, or Montbretia. These are the vivid orange flowers we all know from ditches, with the grassy foliage and the habit of colonising. Their more showy family members are, for example, Lucifer, a very

tall variety with dark orange, almost red flowers. Emily McKenzie has large orange flowers with a deep copper blotch, she is not too tall, nor vigorous. Walberton Yellow is, as its name suggests a yellow variety, Solfatere is also a peachy yellow and Star of the East has wide open star shaped flowers. All like well-drained soil in a sunny spot, though they will survive in heavier soils and shady sites, but may not flower as prolifically. They are, in any situation, a great addition to the flower border, disease and slug proof, as well as being fantastic cut flowers. Begonia tubers should also be in pots by now. They take a while to get going and definitely benefit from being kept indoors until the end of April. Their tubers are flat, prehistoric looking things, very unlike the beautiful flowers they produce. If confused as to the top and the bottom of the tuber, the depressed or hollow end is the top. Plant them about an inch deep. Angel’s Fishing Rod, or Dierama, is another plant which is cheaper to buy as a corm, and often there are more varieties to choose from. The same goes for Agapanthus, which can be quite expensive as plants, and there may not be a huge range to choose from. Ixia is another lovely flower to try, as of course are lillies. When buying tubers or corms from a shop or garden centre, check they have no mould on them and that they are firm. Do not be limited to shops, try the internet for more variety!

Irishmen arrested in alleged roof scamming operation in Australia A man has been extradited from Melbourne to Sydney to face charges relating to an alleged roof scamming operation The 20 year-old is one of three Irish nationals charged by Strike Force Denain, a Sydney police investigation into a series of alleged frauds, targeting elderly home owners. Another, 20 year-old Irish national, bound for the United Kingdom, was arrested at Sydney Airport by Australian Federal Police. Placed into New South Wales custody, police allegedly discovered large

amounts of cash and jewellery in the arrested man’s luggage. He was charged with aggravated break and enter and denied police bail. St George detectives quickly established that an alleged scam was underway and would continue the next day at a home in Bexley. It’s alleged the detectives contacted and warned the home owner, a 72 year-old man.

Following further inquiries, at 8.20pm on Saturday, Police arrested a 22 year-old Irish national at Sydney airport as he tried to board a flight to Qatar. A search of his luggage allegedly uncovered a large amount of cash and jewellery. He was charged with fraud and dealing in proceeds of crime; and refused police bail. Around 10am on Monday, a 20 year-old Irish national was arrested by Australian Federal Police at Melbourne’s Tullamarine airport as he tried to board a flight to Shanghai, China. Kogarah detectives flew to Melbourne and successfully applied for his extradition to New South Wales. He was taken to Kogarah Police Station and charged with dishonestly obtaining financial advantage by deception. Refused bail, he is expected to appear this week in the Sutherland local court. The hunt for a fourth alleged offender is continuing.

A no deal Brexit plays into Trump’s plans for a weaker EU As Britain heads out of control towards a No Deal Brexit, and while most of Europe collectively gets more nervous as this undesirable conclusion seems imminent, there is one supporter of such a train crash. According to Natalie Nougayrède, a political columnist with Britain’s pro-remain Guardian newspaper, a No Deal Brexit is exactly what President Trump wants. He sees the EU as an enemy. The United States of Europe is too big

for its boots and a threat to the United States of America – in his eyes at least. So anything that diminishes European power is a good thing. In an article in The Guardian yesterday (Thursday), Nougayrède interviewed Ted Bromund of the Heritage Foundation’s Margaret Thatcher Centre for Freedom, an American conservative thinktank that British advocates of Brexit have close ties with. She also spoke with Jakub Grygiel, a professor at the Catholic University

However, this year the association float will be mounted on an electric-powered van in an effort to reduce emissions in London city centre. The parade starts at 12 noon and the Kerry Association London welcome walkers who wish to follow the float and join the parade.

Let’s clean up the county!

The eighth County Clean Up Day will take place on Saturday, April 13 and a call has gone out to individuals and communities across the county to get involved in the annual litter collection effort. Last year, some 5,500 volunteers were out and about on the day with the support of Kerry County Council and KWD Recycling as well as local organisations like Kerry GAA, Kerry IFA, and Kerry ICMSA, each of which are joining in the effort again this year. Colm ‘The Gooch’ Cooper will also be lending a hand on the day and is helping to promote the initiative. The Cathaoirleach of Kerry County Council, Norma Foley, launched the event at Ballygarry House Hotel in Tralee on Tuesday evening to coincide with a seminar for Tidy Towns groups in the county. “The growing success of the County Clean Up, since it was established in 2012, is evident in the huge voluntary ef-

fort all over Kerry in previous years and the volume of litter retrieved over the years is indicative of the larger numbers taking part,” Cllr Foley said. “This year let’s again work together to get even more individuals, families, schools, sports clubs and community groups out on the day to help clean up the county. We are so reliant on our reputation for a clean and litter-free environment in Kerry and through this effort, everyone can play a role in that regard.” KWD Recycling will again provide cleanup packs to groups which register at www.countycleanup.com and collection points will be designated around the county to ensure that all litter gathered is disposed of.

The Story behind the medals – Colm Cooper TG4 documentary Colm 'Gooch' Cooper will appear on TG4’s Laochra Gael documentary programme at 5.40pm on St Patrick’s Day. The series, now in its 17th year, features six Laochra with genuine star quality and reveals deeper, fresh and sometimes unexpected insights into the lives of these icons. While the programme uses the stars’ sporting careers as the backdrop to the story - the series travels well beyond the four white lines of the GAA pitch. Copper is the subject of the final programme in the current the series that has already featured Seamus Darby, the Offaly player who denied the Kerry team its five All-Ireland titles in a row in 1982.

This episode delves behind the five All-Irelands and eight All-Stars and reveals the origins of an extraordinary talent in an ordinary Killarney housing estate. The surging number of overseas visitors to Ireland can now benefit from making contactless payments in their own currency, through a new service launched this week by Kerry-based fintech company Fexco. The service will mean that when electing to pay their bill by tapping their phone, tourists can be offered a foreign exchange rate on the spot and know exactly what the cost will be in their home currency. Fexco, working alongside AIB Merchant Services, will roll out the service across Ireland, with Muckross Park Hotel in Killarney the first business to provide the service to its guests. “The way we pay for goods and servic-

Kerry athlete arrives in Abu Dhabi for Special Olympic World Games Gary O’Sullivan (30) from Castleisland has arrived in Abu Dhabi to compete in athletics at the 2019 Special Olympics World Games. He joins his fellow Team Ireland athletes from right across the island of Ireland, who will compete in a total of 12 sports: athletics, badminton, basketball, bocce, bowling, equestrian, football, golf, gymnastics, kayaking, swimming and table tennis. Taking place from yesterday (Thursday) to March 21, Abu Dhabi 2019 will be

Supported by a volunteer management team of 39, the 91-strong Team Ireland will join 7,000 Special Olympics athletes from 170 countries at the Games. Further hotel recruitment fairs are likely to be held in the county following a successful first event organised by South Kerry Development Partnership CLG last week. More than 100 jobseekers attended the event in the Muckross Park Hotel on Thursday last, where the representatives of 10 hotels in total who had both full and part-time positions available across a range of areas. The event was organised by the SICAP programme and SKDP’s Employer Liaison Officer Joanne Griffin said she was delighted with the success of the event, given the larger than expected turnout

of jobseekers. “The event enjoyed strong support from the hotel sector in Killarney with 10 different hotels seeking employees and this was mirrored by the interest from those seeking to develop a career in the sector who attended the event,” she said. Councillor calls for permanent caretaker at Rossbeigh Beach During a debate on the Litter Pollution Act at this month's meeting of Kerry County Council, Councillor Michael Cahill called on Senior Management to provide a full-time caretaker at Rossbeigh Beach. He said the Council provide a caretaker every year from June 1 until the end of September and the beach is well maintained. However, outside of this period the refuse bins and dog fowling bins are removed and this has become a big problem for dumping and dog fowling, the Fianna Fail Councillor, who resides in Rossbeigh, stated.

He said the beach has become increasingly busy off season with the success of the Wild Atlantic Way and with the public becoming more health conscious. There has been an alarming increase in the number of people walking dogs on the beach in recent years and it is quite common to see up to 50 or 60 dogs on the beach on any one day. "Our beaches are a very important part of County Kerry's economy and need to be maintained to the highest of standards and the only way this can be achieved is by having a permanent caretaker who will ensure amongst other things that the bins are put out and emptied on a weekly basis,” he said.

Another Strictly success for the Irish Cancer Society There was an electric atmosphere in Killarney’s INEC on Friday night as 1,500 gathered for the highly anticipated Strictly Come Dancing event. 12 couples, trained by Tralee choreographer Cassie Leen, took to the floor for the biggest annual fundraiser for the Killarney and South Kerry branch of the Irish Cancer Society. And it was the footwork and graceful movements by local Garda Emmet Flanagan and his dancing partner Ciara O’Donoghue from Listry, who gave a beautiful contemporary style performance to ‘Lost Boy, Peter Pan’ – which

saw them crowned the Overall Winners. A second People’s Choice award was won by Kenmare’s Mike Delaney and Mags O’Mahony who danced the jive to ‘Runaway Baby’ by Bruno Mars. Emmet, is the third member of Killarney Gardai to win the glamorous event. Neither he nor his partner had any substantial dancing experience and both said they were shocked

when they were named by the judges as the winners. “I said from day one that this was going to be fun,” Emmett told The Killarney Advertiser this week. “I would not say I am a competitive man, but for a few moments before the judges called out the names of the winners I was very nervous and I suppose then the competitive element crept in.” Emmet was supported on the night by many of his family and friends, including several who travelled from his native Ennis, and colleagues from Killarney Garda Station.

“I had no dancing experience,” Ciara, who works in Fexco, said. “Maybe when I was a child of six or seven I might have done a small bit but really I had no experience. Everyone made a huge effort in the run up and it was amazing we won.” The next big fundraiser for the branch is the annual Daffodil Day on Friday, March 22. Kathrina Breen of the Killarney South Kerry Branch praised the people of Killarney for supporting all fundraising activities in the town. “We are a small committee but Strictly is the biggest event on our calendar and we cannot thank the people and businesses of Killarney enough,” she said. “Daffodil Day is next for us and if anyone would like to donate daffodils for sale, they can be dropped in to the Credit Union offices on Beech Road.”

Buckle up over Bank Holiday weekend Your seatbelt is your number one lifesaver - and this week all drivers are being urged to buckle up.

Plans for annual Kilgarvan vintage and classic car run Roughty Valley Vintage Club has released details of its annual vintage and classic car run which will take place on Sunday, March 31. The Kilgarvan Vintage and Classic Car Run will start in Kilgarvan at 12pm and will take in well-known local roads like Ballaghbeama Pass and Caragh Lake before finishing at the Red Fox Inn near Glenbeigh. Entry is just €20 and sign-on begins at 11am at community hall in the village. Each entrant will get a free souvenir of the event and the Joey Sweeney Memo-

rial Ford trophy will also be presented on the day. “Anyone who would like to get a spin in a vintage car on the day is most welcome,” Edward Gibbons club spokesperson said. “Just ask anyone of us on the morning of the event and we can arrange it.” Further details of the event are available by contacting Edward on 086 0739094.

A week-long seatbelt enforcement operation began this week with similar operations taking place in 27 other countries across Europe. The action is part of a Europe-wide operation co-ordinated by TISPOL, the European Traffic Police Network, and vehicle occupants who do not wear their seatbelt will be issued with a penalty. Road safety and breakdown organisation GEM Motoring Assist is urging all drivers to ensure they and their passengers use seatbelts on every journey. According to GEM road safety officer Neil Worth, wearing a seatbelt is not only a legal requirement - it’s also your number one lifesaver in the event of a collision. “Seatbelts reduce the risk of death by 45 percent for drivers and front seat occupants. They also reduce the risk of serious injury by 50 percent,” he said. “If you’re not wearing a seatbelt and your vehicle is involved in a crash, you will simply become a projectile. That means you are likely to be flung at high speed – most probably against the front, side or rear windows. If your head hits the glass and it holds, you will sustain some sort of head injury. If it breaks, you will go through the window, almost cer-

tainly resulting in death or serious injury. “If you’re wearing a seatbelt in the same situation, you would stay in your seat and hit nothing. You might have walked away unscathed. “That’s why we urge all drivers to ensure that they – and their passengers – wear a seatbelt on every journey, and that any children travelling with you are using an appropriate child restraint.”

Volkswagen plans 22 million new vehicles The Volkswagen Group is planning to launch almost 70 new electric models in the next 10 years – increasing production from 15 million to 22 million. Volkswagen signed off a comprehensive decarbonisation program aimed at achieving a CO2 - neutral balance in all areas from fleet to production to administration by 2050. Key to the group’s carbon neutral policy is the creation of an electric car charging network across Europe, beginning in i Germany. “We will be installing 400 fast-charging stations along Europe's major roads

and highways by 2020,” Dr Diess added. Almost to prove the point the group announced this week that its presence at the Commercial Vehicle Show in Birmingham next month will feature several electric vans. All-electric versions of the Caddy, Transporter and eCrafter are set to feature at the show,alongside conventionally fuelled models.

Killarney students got plenty of talent! It was very apparent on Friday that local students have plenty of talent as they took part in the final of the Killarney Community College, ‘Who’s Got Talent 2019’.

Kerry’s youth enjoy fun day in Killarney Over 1,400 young people from 37 KDYS youth clubs in Kerry gathered at the INEC to celebrate one of the largest annual youth events in Ireland - KDYS Youth Day. Young people attended from Fossa, Beaufort and Kenmare and as far away as Castlegregory and Dingle. There was a huge variety of activities including the ever popular Bucking Bronco and youth club challenges, which was won this year by Milltown Youth Club. “KDYS is constantly engaging with young people and their communities in order to meet their needs

The event, which is now in its tenth year, was organised by teachers Mary Fuller, Denise O’Sullivan and Joanna Hughes. Students went through four weeks of auditions, and of the 23 entries, the final eight acts battled it out in the grand final. The glamorous judges included teachers; Siobhan O’Brien, Ciaran Gallagher, Mike Lynch and student judge Grainne O’Sullivan. And the winners who received trophies and vouchers were announced as Rachel Griffen in first place, who sang her own original song called ‘Lazy Generation’ winning €100, magician Jamil Khaleel won second prize bagging himself €75, while talented drummer Jack

Ryan, was delighted to be placed third - winning €50. “This is the tenth year of this very successful event which showcased the vast talents within the college,” teacher Joanna Hughes said. “The school’s spirit is uplifted when the whole school community shares their many talents.” Teacher Denise O’Sullivan added that the talent show is one of the highlights in the arts calendar in the school. “It is a fantastic opportunity to showcase the amazing talents of the students,” she added. Students tutored by Mary Fuller also presented at the event. “This event is student led from beginning to end, giving a warm glow to everyone leaving the college on a sunny Friday,” Mary said.

Almost 20,000 hits on Ian’s first YouTube podcast Killarney teenager Ian O’Connell has taken his message to a whole new level - by starting a podcast on YouTube. | By Darragh Doolan At just over 16 minutes long, the first episode of ‘Be Yourself’ has reached almost 20,000 views on the site since it was uploaded just two weeks ago. “It’s a weird feeling when you fall, and you go to get up and you can’t,” he says in his podcast. Ian describes the day of his accident and the aftermath in great detail, but it is his continuous positive response that draws so many people to listen to his message. For example, he tells of an experience during his time in the National Rehabilitation Hospital in Dublin, when told by a nurse that “I don’t want to be saying this, but you know you’re not going to get movement back after your injury”. His response - “I felt like telling her to eff off, but I just smiled and said

‘watch me’”. Over the last 18 months, Ian has been inspiring people of all ages with his messages of positivity, in particular his “if you can’t stand up, stand out” attitude. Since his cycling accident in August 2017 that resulted to injuries to his spine, Ian has been interviewed on local radio, met the likes of UFC star Conor McGregor and even made an appearance on RTÉ’s ‘Late Late Show’. Wherever he goes, Ian’s attitude towards his situation and positive outlook on life has resonated with many people in Kerry and beyond. This is seen in his anecdotes throughout the podcast, such as when he was allowed home from hospital for three days for St Patrick’s weekend. The first episode of Ian O’Connell’s ‘Be Yourself’ is available on his YouTube channel under the video name BE/YOUR/SELF EP 1.

The road to Croke Park is ridiculously long for club teams. Sunday’s clash between Dr Crokes and Corofin will be the final act in a season that effectively started 14 months ago. And, psychologically speaking, the journey to this decisive match began even further back than that for the Lewis Road club. It really all started on the 26th of November 2017.

That was the day that Cork side Nemo Rangers shocked the GAA world by bringing to an abrupt end Crokes’ dream of retaining their All-Ireland title. Defeats like that, when you just don’t turn up, lead to a lot of soul-searching and at the time Pat O’Shea’s players could be forgiven for allowing some self-doubt to creep into their psyche. As successful as the club had been in Kerry and Munster, particularly since the turn of the century, it took them 25 years to finally get over that line and win their second All-Ireland in 2017. Who was to say that it wouldn’t take another five, or 10, or even 25 years to get back there again? Certain older players might have considered leaving on a high after that victory over Slaughtneil. Had they made a mistake by staying on? And was now the right time to call it a day? Crokes had an uncomfortably long winter to ruminate on these questions and plenty of rivals hoped against hope that Nemo had exposed a chink in their armour. No one was saying it too loudly but maybe the top club in Kerry were a little bit vulnerable heading into the 2018 season. If Nemo can outplay them like that, why not Dingle, or South Kerry, or Legion, or Rahilly’s?

The season got off to an inauspicious start for the Crokes when they drew 0-9 to 0-9 with Glenbeigh in the opening round of the County League but they went on a rampage thereafter, winning the Club Championship and powering their way to the top Division 1 with string of comprehensive victories. By the time the County Championship rolled around, Dr Crokes were overwhelming favourites to retain the competition. A few eyebrows were raised, however, when they came mightily close to a Round 1 defeat to rank outsiders St Kieran’s in Killarney. The Black and Amber trailed by four points as the game entered the final quarter but they rallied to register eight of the final 10 scores to break the visitors’ hearts. All appeared to be back to normal in Round 2 when they held a commanding nine-point lead over Kerins O’Rahilly’s but what happened next threatened to throw their entire season into disarray. Rahilly’s came out of nowhere to score 3-4 in the last 10 minutes and send shockwaves around the county. Crokes weren’t out – they had the safety net of the losers’ round to fall back on – but could they recover from such a traumatic collapse? Seven days later, they delivered an answer in emphatic fashion. The Killarney side racked up a whopping 3-28 against 14-man An Ghaeltacht in the Park as Tony Brosnan grabbed national headlines by scoring 1-14 (1-10 from play) with zero wides. The holders were equally dominant in the quarters, defeating crosstown rivals Legion with plenty to spare, and two weeks later they got some revenge

when they defeated Rahilly’s by nine points in Tralee. In the final against Dingle, a late Gavin White goal sealed another Kerry SFC crown for the Crokes, their seventh since 2010, and by this stage they were really rolling.

FROM MOYLE TO MULLINALAGHTA

You can only beat what’s put in front of you but for the Crokes, the 2018 Munster title came just about as easily as a provincial title can come. The Kerry champions defeated Moyle Rovers (Tipperary), St Finbarr’s (Cork) and St Joseph’s Miltown-Malbay (Clare) by an average winning margin of 15.3 points to secure their spot in the All-Ireland semi-final against the champions of Leinster. Kilmacud of Dublin were expected to advance from that particular side of the draw but plucky Mullinalaghta had other ideas, becoming the first club from Longford to win Leinster with an emotional two-point win in Tullamore. The whole country was caught up in the Mullinalaghta fairytale and for a brief period in the first half of the semi-final, it appeared as though the Crokes were about to get caught up in it too. In fairness to the Munster champs, they weathered a stormy first half before finding their feet in the second, thanks in part to the excellent David Shaw who filled in for Johnny Buckley in midfield. Buckley was controversially red-carded in the 21st minute but that decision was subsequently overturned at a hearing, clearing him to play in the All-Ireland final on St Patrick’s Day.

THE DECIDER

So all of that has led us to Sunday and the All-Ireland Senior Club Football Final in Croke Park. Dr Crokes’ opponents are holders Corofin from Galway who will be appearing in their third final in four years. That unquestionable pedigree has them slight favourites with the bookies and I must admit, I’ve been really impressed with them every time I’ve seen them play. They adopt a fairly positive approach and in Ian Burke and Gary Sice they have two really clever and creative forwards who can cause problems for any defence in the country. When you consider that Crokes’ defensive frailties have been well documented in recent times, you can certainly see a player of Burke’s calibre getting some joy in the (apocryphal) wide open spaces of Croke Park. I do, however, think that the Crokes have the better forwards overall and I would be surprised if they didn’t post another decent score between them on Sunday. In the full forward line, Tony Brosnan, Kieran O’Leary and David Shaw have been in serious form and further out the field, I thought Brian Looney and Gavin O’Shea had really impressive semi-finals. I think it’s fair to say that Micheál Burns wasn’t quite at his electrifying best last time out but there’s no denying that he has become a very important player over the past year or

two, and he certainly has the potential to play a key role in the final. There’s a strong likelihood that the midfield battle will prove decisive. Daithí Casey and Johnny Buckley are undoubtedly two of Dr Crokes’ most influential players and if they can get the upper hand around the middle third and get a steady supply of possession into the hands Brosnan, Leary and Shaw, Crokes will have a great chance of emerging victorious. Prediction: Dr Crokes by one.

The Crokes must give it everything It’s the place to be for any senior club: Croke Park on All-Ireland final day, vying for the much-coveted Andy Merrigan Cup. Dr Crokes are there on merit, as shown by their determination and heroics all the way through the qualifying matches in Kerry and in Munster. They brushed all opposition aside on their way to Sunday’s final, but they had to pull out all the stops in the semi-final before dispatching of Mullinalaghta by 0-18 to 2-7. That was a real test of character as they were reduced to 14 players from the 16th minute when Johnny Buckley was issued a straight red card, which was later lifted on appeal to the CCC of the GAA. The youthful David Shaw was moved to midfield to lessen the load on Daithí Casey and he played a blinder. Crokes were two points in arrears at the time and it took a lot of heart and determination for the Crokes to stay in the game. They went three points down and that was ominous, but they hit five without reply to go ahead by 11 points to 2-3 at half time. Remember they conceded two goals in the first half and they have been working on that deficiency in training for the final. The high ball into the square caused them all kinds of problems.

the gaps that emerged when you had to play most of the game with 14 men was one of the reasons why he was in contention for Man of the Match against Mullinalaghta. Micheál Burns scored just one point and had a poor game by the standards of a man from the Kerry panel. Gavin O’Shea’s role in the forwards is to act as provider of opportunities for his fellow forwards and he is usually called ashore at the three-quarter stage to make way for impact sub Colm Cooper. I feel that the latter should come in earlier and play at corner forward, close to goal where the Corofin backs would be very nervous to have such a proven star in the dangerous scoring zone. The versatile Shaw could operate from the centre forward position. Crokes have a very strong bench which is vital in the modern game so the selectors have great options. On any particular day any player can get injured or be playing poorly. Pat O’Shea and his fellow selectors must use that bench as early as is necessary.

ACCURATE FORWARDS

I expect Crokes to win the midfield battle and provide the possession for the lethal forward line. Casey and Buckley are very experienced and should hold sway in this vital department. The Croke defence can be breached and they are vulnerable under the dropping ball in front of the square. That was obvious in their last game when they conceded two goals and it could have been more only for the athleticism of goalkeeper Shane Murphy, who can play himself on to the Kerry panel with a solid game in this final. Fionn Fitzgerald played very well last time out, particularly in the second half when he forced four vital turnovers. Mike Moloney had a tough time in that semi-final, but he has shown that he is a man for the big day and you don’t get any bigger occasion than the All-Ireland

The Crokes forwards were magnificent. Tony Brosnan was brilliant, coming in with six points. Four of these were from play. He does not look for the posts as he knows exactly where the black spot is. He wins possession and often with his back to the goal he sweeps the ball over the bar. I will be surprised if Peter Keane does not add him to the county panel. Kieran O’Leary is rejuvenated and scoring freely with that trusted ciotóg. He won the world of ball in the semi-final, feeding his fellow forwards and adding four points from play. David Shaw was a revelation filling in for Johnny Buckley at midfield and he was still able to kick three points from play. HALF BACKS

In the half back line Gavin White has been magnificent in the centre and has the pace to take the ball up-field when the opportunity arises. He is likely to be the Kerry senior captain after this game. He is flanked by Buddy O’Leary and Shane Doolan, whose primary role is one of defence, and they will come up against good Corofin half forwards on Sunday. A real danger here for Corofin is their top scorer Gary Sice. He scored a goal in their semi-final against Gaoth Dobhair and seven points from frees. Others to look out for are Ian Burke, Gavin Burke, and the Farraghers.

HISTORY MAKERS

Corofin are the holders and favourites to win again this year, so Crokes face a tough battle. However, Crokes won it out in 2017 so this is the dream pairing. Crokes beat Corofin by double scores in the 2017 All-Ireland semi-final. They will be hoping for more of the same this time out but irrespective of how Corofin play, Crokes must be at their best, giving it everything, tightening up at the back, not conceding easy goals and the forwards must be as accurate as ever. If the defence can avoid conceding a goal, midfield and the forwards will be able to provide the match-winning scores. The two goals Corofin scored in the semi-final against Gaoth Dobhair proved vital, but they also conceded one goal. There is no place to hide poor displays in Croke Park. Only the best will do for John Payne to lift the cup. Good and all as Corofin are, Crokes can win this if they play to their full potential. They can join Kilcummin and Beaufort as All-Ireland Club Champions 2019. They have prepared very well and are very appreciative of the role of the ladies events committee in the club who have cooked a hot dinner for the team in the clubhouse for all of their training sessions.

UNDER 12S

Good news: I hear that the Crokes U12s will play Corofin in a short exhibition game at half time in the senior game. A huge crowd of supporters will travel on Sunday and the special train was sold out 10 days before the final. That special train departs from Killarney on Sunday morning at 8.25am, travelling to Connolly Station and returning from Connolly at 7.40pm. That return train is due in to Killarney at 10.40pm with the team on board and hopefully the Andy Merrigan Cup. Mike Buckley has laid on extra coaches for the many supporters who could not get a booking on the train.

2018 Young Player of the Year David Clifford could make his long-awaited return for the Kerry seniors on Saturday night when Kerry host Mayo in Tralee. The Fossa sharpshooter has been out of action since undergoing shoulder surgery in January but manager Peter Keane has confirmed that Clifford is in contention to play some part in the crucial league tie against the team who currently occupy third place in Division 1 of the National Football League. Whether the 20-year-old will start or be called upon from the bench remains to be seen, but we will find out tonight when the team is named at approximately 9pm. The Kerry manager is hopeful that Killarney Legion star James O’Donoghue will also be available for selection this weekend after a frustrating period on the sidelines. The 2014 Footballer of the Year would certainly add some much-needed firepower to Kerry’s goal-shy offence; The Kingdom have netted just one goal in five outings to date, which is the worst record of any team in any division of the National League. Despite that troubling statistic, Kerry are still in pole position in Division 1 on the back of five consecutive wins and another two points this weekend would secure their spot in the league final on March 31. Kerry v Mayo Saturday at 7pm Austin Stack Park where, defeat to Mayo could leave them in a perilous position heading into the final weekend of fixtures. If Kerry lose and Galway and Dublin win against Roscommon and Tyrone respectively, victory on the final day might be necessary to avoid a messy four-way tie. Kerry will play Roscommon away on March 24. The good news of Clifford and O’Donoghue’s imminent return was offset this week by the bad news that David Moran (tendonitis) and Paul Geaney (back) will be unavailable for the visit of Mayo and potentially the trip to Roscommon in a week’s time. To be fair to Jack Barry and co., they have fared well in midfield without Moran thus far and Paul Geaney hasn’t really been firing on all cylinders so far this season but both Moran and Geaney are experienced heads. Keane will be eager to have both ready for the league final (if Kerry get there) and, of course, the championship.

PLAYERS WITHELD

The Kerry bainisteoir also revealed this week that Jack Barry (Na Gaeil), Dara Moynihan (Spa) and Seán O’Shea (Kenmare) are fully fit after all three were notable absentees from their clubs’ County League openers last weekend. Speculation had it that they might have been injured but it turned out that Kerry witheld the trio from club action due to the amount football they have played for

college and county already this year. While you can see where Keane is coming from, keeping players from certain clubs and releasing players from other clubs is bound to cause some friction. Look at Moynihan’s case. His club, Spa, had to head down to Gallarus to face An Ghaeltacht – always a tough fixture – without the services of arguably their best player. Meanwhile, An Ghaeltacht had the luxury of calling on Kerry players Brian Ó Beaglaoich and Tomás Ó Sé (both of whom played well by all accounts), and Spa ended up losing the game well. Division 1 is a tough league and any team who loses their first game are immediately playing catch up. You can understand Keane’s predicament and maybe Moynihan, O’Shea and Barry have indeed played too much football, but if I was in that Spa dressing room the last day I’d be fairly pissed off. I have no doubt that the players in question would much rather take to the field with their clubmates as well, regardless of their physical condition, especially when the vast majority of their intercounty teammates were given permission to tog out. Would it not have been fairer if Kerry pulled all of their players the last day, instead of just the ones who needed a break? Realisitically none of those county guys are going to play another County League game this year anyway, so why let them play in the opening round? If Spa end up missing out on a final, or survival, by a point or two come the end of the summer, I’m sure they’ll be asking the very same questions.

Your Scotts Lakers play their 24th and final game of the 2018/19 regular season on Saturday night and with a playoff berth already guaranteed, they can rest assured knowing that the hard work is done. For now. The Lakers have their biggest match of the year the following Saturday when they face DBS Éanna in the semi-final of the playoffs, with the winner advancing to Division 1 final in WIT on Sunday. The winners of that decider will gain automatic promotion to the Super League while the runners-up will have the option of a playoff with the second-lowest ranked team in the top tier. There’s no doubting that the Killarney side are outsiders at this moment in

time but the prospect of Super League basketball is a mighty big carrot for the club to go above and beyond and cause an upset. When you look at it in the simplest terms, the Lakers are two wins away from returning to the highest level of Irish basketball. As impressive as they have been this season, there’s no guaranteeing that they’ll be in the same position 12 months down the line. Éanna will be an extremely tough proposition - they beat the Lakers by 16 points

on February 23 – but Cormac O’Donoghue’s side rightly believe that on their day they have the potential to beat anyone. Before that big showdown in Dublin, Paul’s have this home game against Sligo to worry about and while it may not mean much to the hosts, it certainly holds major significance for the opposition. Heading into the final round of fixtures, Sligo are currently joint second with the Dublin Lions in the Northern Conference with an identical record of 16-6. The sides split the season series but the Dubliners lead by virtue of their superior points difference in those two games against Sligo (Sligo 80-77 Dublin Lions, Dublin Lions 110-100 Sligo), so victory over the Limerick Celtics on Saturday will secure second.

Although this is the final home league game of the season, local basketball fans will have the opportunity to see the Lakers in action at least one more time at the Auracle. The end of season League Cup competition gets underway on March 30/31 and the Lakers will host the seventh seed team in the north, LYIT Donegal, in Round 1. If they win, they will also have home advantage in the quarters, against IT Carlow or Ulster University, on April 6/7. The semis and the final will be played in Dublin the following weekend, on April 13/14.

Killarney native Jordan Lee was born with one hand but that hasn’t stopped him from pursuing his sporting dreams. In 2018, the high jumper won a bronze medal for Ireland in the Para Athletics European Championships in Berlin. Adam Moynihan sat down with the talented para athlete this week to discuss his goals for 2019, his Paralympic prospects and some of his favourite things. Hi Jordan. How is training going?

It’s going well. I’m training five to six times a week so it’s a fairly hefty load, but I have a great team at my side in my coach Tomás Grifin and assistant coach PJ Galvin. We like to call ourselves The Jumper’s Tribe, the #menonamission team, and we’re going really hard at the moment. We’re looking forward to the outdoor season, which is coming in the next month or two.

How would you rate your chances of being selected for the 2020 Paralympics?

You recently secured direct funding from Sport Ireland. How important is that for your career? Yeah I’m delighted. That’s going to help me in many different ways. For example, when I have competitions up and down the country, the funding will help pay for travel expenses. I train at the track twice a week so it will help pay for that too, as well as any gear or high jump equipment that I need. If we choose to go on our own training camp, we can also use the funding towards that. Becoming a funded athlete is great and it’s definitely going to further my development as a high jumper. What are your goals for the rest of the year? The main goal is to hopefully get selected and qualify for the World Championships in Dubai in November. That’s my main focus. In terms of my jumps, I just need to keep performing the way I’m performing, keep trying to raise the bar each time, impress the coaches, and then hopefully get

It’s still very early days yet. The Paralympics aren’t on for another year and a half so you can’t really say. I would like to think that I have a decent chance but you can never be certain, you can never take anything for granted. The best thing to do is just continue raising the bar every time I go out training and competing. Do you ever feel discriminated against because of your disability? I don’t. Not anymore. When I was younger and I played basketball, I did. I used to get discriminated against quite a lot. Nowadays I don’t to be honest. A lot of people know who I am and they respect what I’m doing, which is a great feeling. And it’s only right because I believe it doesn’t matter if you’ve got one hand or if you have one leg, or if you’re any bit different to anyone else. We all deserve to be treated the same. Who has been the biggest influence on your career so far? That’s a tough question. I’ve only been doing the high jump for a year and a half, so it’s actually still kind of new and I’m still learning things every day. I would say my coach Tomás has had the biggest influence on me. Without him and PJ, I wouldn’t be the jumper that I am today to be honest with you.

What’s your proudest sporting moment? Obviously winning a bronze in the European Championships was a great moment for me and for my family, and also for my coaches and the team. But I actually didn’t jump particularly well. I only jumped 1.75m, which at the time was 9cm off my personal best. So to be honest with you I was a little bit down about that, even though I was after winning a medal. I would say that my proudest moment to date was winning a bronze medal at the National Junior Championships (under 20) in January. I jumped a new PB of 1.90m in an able-bodied competition. To put that into context, that’s the equivalent of jumping 8cm over my own head. I’m currently ranked 7th in Ireland in the high jump in able-bodied competition, and I’m also ranked number 1 in the world in the para rankings. So I’m really happy with how my season has started out. What’s your most embarrassing sporting moment? When I was 16 I had my first international competition with the Paralympic team in Berlin. I finished fourth out of four people, so it wasn’t great. I jumped 1.55m, which was really, really bad. If you had to compare yourself to another athlete, who would it be?

I actually wouldn’t compare myself to any other athlete. You see people when

they’re younger and they want to be like Ronaldo or they want to be like Gooch, but I don’t try to be like anyone else. I try to be my own person. There aren’t really a lot of athletes out there like me, which I think is a good thing. I want to try and inspire other people, and you can’t do that by pretending to be somebody else. Do you have any superstitions? I don’t really. The night before a big competition I always say a prayer to myself and pray that everything’s going to go well but other than that, I don’t have any superstitions. Is there an app on your phone that you couldn’t live without? There is. I love Instagram. I wouldn’t be able to delete the app off my phone if I’m being honest with you. What’s your most used emoji? It would probably be the prayer sign. I can’t do it properly for you right now! But it’s a nice mark of respect. What sort of music do you listen to? Thunder Road by Bruce Springsteen. It’s a cracker of a tune to be fair. What’s the last show you binge watched? The Punisher on Netflix. Great show. And last one… What’s the best piece of advice you’ve ever received? Never give up. It’s fairly straightforward and straight to the point but I’m a firm believer that you 100% need to believe in yourself and in your abilities to achieve whatever it is that you want to achieve. To do that, there’s only one thing you need to do and that’s keep going. Don’t be listening to what other people say. You do whatever it is you want to do.

Busy times for Nagle Local codriver Paul Nagle has a busy few weeks ahead as he plans on contesting rallies in Ireland and Italy on back-to-back weekends.

Hat-trick Subaru to return to the Rally of the Lakes A car that has won the Cartell.ie Rally of the Lakes on three occasions in the past is set to return to the rally this year in the hands of a Kerry driver. | By Sean Moriarty The Subaru Impreza World Rally Car – registration number MC54WRC – was originally built by the legendary Prodrive team in England for 2003 world champion Petter Solberg. The Norwegian used in that year’s Argentine and Japanese rounds of the world championships before the car was sold to Ireland in early 2006. Meath-based driver Tim McNulty drove the car to victory on that year’s Circuit of Kerry in April, the last time that rally was based in Dingle. A month later he added his first of two Rally of the Lakes wins. The car changed hands several times after that before Cork-based Darragh O’Riordan used it to win the 2010 Rally of the Lakes – the car’s third victory on the rally. Again, it passed through several owners, mainly in Britain, until London-based Listowel man Ray Hilliard purchased it in January this year.

The traditional St Patrick’s weekend West Cork Rally gets underway tomorrow from Clonakilty where Nagle and his driver Craig Breen are the second seeds in their Ford Fiesta R5. The West Cork Rally is round two of the Irish Tarmac Rally Championship and Breen and Nagle are the current leaders following victory on last month’s Galway International Rally. The following weekend the Kerry/ Waterford pairing will contest the first round of the Italian rally championship in a Skoda Fabia R5. Breen has secured a deal with Swiss team Metior Sport to contest the eight-round Italian series.

Killarney co-driver Noel O’Sullivan, alongside Derry man Connor McCloskey were the early leaders of Saturday’s Malcolm Wilson Rally in their Ford Fiesta R5 but were forced to retire at the end of stage three. The rally was based in the town of Cockermouth, home of the M-Sport Ford World Rally Team and, not far from Kendal, one of Killarney’s twin-towns.

Buckley in West Cork Rally Local codriver Shane Buckley, from Listry, will contest this weekend’s West Cork Rally alongside English rally legend Phil Collins in a Ford Escort Mk2. Buckley, currently based in London has won several local rallies but this is his first time partnering Collins. Quinn, a former Kerry Winter Rally winner has been given the chance to win his home national rally while at the same time ironing out any issues with the car ahead Hilliard’s appearance in Killarney in May. Speaking at last weekend’s Circuit of Kerry launch at the Rose Hotel, Quinn said: “I am very excited and looking forward to the rally. I have never driven a fourwheel-drive car, not even as a road car. The first time I drove the car was to take it off the trailer and drive it to the door of the hotel. I am hoping for a test before the rally. Ray is a good friend of mine and I am delighted to be given the chance to drive it before he does in Killarney – and show him how to drive it.”

Motorsport royalty in Killarney Irish rally legend Rosemary Smith was one of the guest speakers at an International Women’s Day celebration organised by the Kerry Businesswomen’s Network at the Muckross Park Hotel last Friday. Smith, from Dublin, was one of Europe’s most successful drivers in the 1960s and 1970s, including winning the prestigious Tulip Rally and the 1969 Cork "20" Rally. Smith has won the ladies' prize several times on both the Scottish Rally and the Circuit of Ireland Rally.

Killarney 7 | Carrick-On-Suir 5 CASTLEISLAND RUGBY CLUB A strong and imposing Carrick-onSuir team travelled to Castleisland to take on Killarney in this intense quarter-final encounter, which was played in atrocious weather conditions on Sunday last. Killarney played with the strong elements at their back in the first half and after some initial even exchanges launched a telling attack from their own half. Donnchadh Grealy broke the defensive line and Ozdenis Koyun continued the move before releasing fellow centre Tomás Clifford whose arching run outpaced the scrambling Carrick rear guard. The slotted conversion proved very im-

portant in the end. Killarney found it difficult to harness the elements and add to their advantage as primary possession was eluding them. Carrick totally dominated lineout exchanges and their large pack mopped up any isolated runners. A stop-start first half petered out in a hailstorm and the speed of the lads sprinting to the dressing room on the halftime whistle was commendable. It certainly looked at this stage that a seven-point lead would not be enough for victory. Now with the wind at their back, Carrick kicked long from the restart and following a well-worked lineout reversed a pass to their hulking prop Seán Mullarkey who crashed over in the

corner. The conversion missed narrowly. Enjoying the majority of possession, the visitors chased a lead but found a tough defensive line difficult to breach. Carrick put trust in their backs to finish and on several occasions came close, only to be denied by Pádraig Talbot, Liam Randles, Donnchadh Grealy, and Mikey Moriarty. Cleverly, Killarney slowed down the tempo, kicked low into the wind and ran any scrum wins up blindside avenues to gain yard and lift the siege. The pressure mounted even further when Killarney were reduced to 14 men for a second illegal tackle for the remaining minutes. Now camped in the 22, Carrick turned down opportunities to kick penalties and persevered in moving ball wide but were ultimately unable to unlock the home defence. One final knock-on brought joyous roars from the Killarney faithful who had braved the elements. After the game, Killarney thanked Castleisland RFC who made their facilities available on short notice and on this occasion a word of recognition for manager John O’Connell who managed to get the fixture played. Killarney now play in the semi-final in two weeks’ time against Waterford or Nenagh.

Muckross Rowing Club EVENTS: Due to the limited events and race categories available at this weekend's St Michael's HOR, the club has opted not to make the journey to Limerick. Killarney Swimming Club GALA: Congratulations to all our swimmers who took part in the Munster Development 2 Gala in Tralee recently with fine performances all round. Girls U12 Jocelyn Hickey put on a class show, winning a trio of silvers in the 100 IM, the 200 freestyle, and the 100 freestyle. Girls U13 Faye O¹Neill took a stunning gold in the 200 freestyle while Sarah McAuliffe won silver in the difficult 100 breaststroke.
