“Another life lost is too many”
Coroner returns verdict of accidental death
A Killarney woman whose partner was fatally injured while out cycling four years ago has welcomed new laws which have been introduced to protect vulnerable road users. | By Sean Moriarty
EXCLUSIVE
The new laws, which came into effect at midnight on Tuesday, will make it an offence to dangerously overtake a pedal cyclist. Building on existing legislation, it provides for an increased fixed charge of €120 and three penalty points for offenders. Ed Duggan, a well-known member of Killarney Cycling Club, was killed when he was hit by a car while cycling near Scart Cross in November 2015. Last Sunday the local club marked his anniversary by holding its annual Ed Duggan Memorial Cycle. Participants in the event included his two
brothers Chris and Peter who came from England and Italy specially for the event. Members of the club and his partner Siobhan Dwyer observed a minute’s silence and laid a wreath at the spot where he was killed. “The new laws for cycle safety are a step in the right direction, awareness is key and let's look after each other on the roads, slow down, allow space and be courteous, even when others aren't, lead by example,” she told the Killarney Advertiser. “It could be someone's life at risk, trust me you don't want to be the person receiving that call that the person you love has been killed. Cyclists are so much more vulnerable on the road - a

car is no match for a bike. There has to be change, another life lost is too many.” The introduction of the new law will be highlighted by the rollout of new signage warning motorists to provide for adequate overtaking space for cyclists. The signage includes providing for a one metre distance overtaking space in locations with speed limits less than 50km/h, and 1.5-metre distance where speed limit exceeds 50km/h.
Toy Show appearance “a dream come true” for Rian | By Michelle Crean One little Killarney boy is overwhelmed and very excited to this week learn that he will appear as a book reviewer on this year’s Late Late Toy Show.
yesterday (Thursday). “When my mom found out she started crying! It’s a day I’ll never forget.” At the Dublin auditions, Rian, who is in First Class in Gaelscoil Faithleann, brought his favourite book ‘My Golden Ticket: A Journey into Willy Wonka’s
Chocolate Factory’ and later found out it is also presenter Ryan Tubridy’s favourite book. “I love watching it but thought it’d be way better if I was on it,” Rian added. “I am very excited and a bit nervous and when Ryan retires I want to take his job!”
Rian Gleeson (7) from Artygallivan, found out on Tuesday that he has been selected by RTE to appear in front of millions of viewers on the Friday, November 29 show. Rian’s step-mom Paula, who runs the Gleeson School of Drama, filmed him playing the accordion and reading a six verse poem she wrote – and he was delighted to be called to Dublin to audition recently. On Tuesday Paula received a call from researchers on the show that Rian, son of Caroline and Michéal, had made the cut. Now, he’s waiting to find out which book he will review and says that he is so excited. “When I found out I just wanted to go and hug everyone and I was jumping up and down,” Rian told the Killarney Advertiser

A verdict of accidental death has been returned at the inquest into the death of an experienced cyclist who died four years ago in a collision on the N22, main Tralee to Killarney road. Edward Duggan, aged 36, of Mount Henry, Firies, Killarney was “a seasoned cyclist who had cycled all his life”, the inquest into his death in Killarney Coroner’s Court was told on Wednesday. He had been in the lead group with the Killarney Cycle Club on a Sunday morning run on November 15, 2015. The lead group had stopped briefly near Scart Cross on the Killarney side of Farranfore and Mr Duggan had eaten something and had just set out again. The road surface was good but wet and it was really windy. Driver Sean O’Mahony of Tralee, in his deposition read to him at the inquest by Superintendent Murphy, told how he had been driving at around 70km per hour in the 100 km zone. He and a friend were on their way to a match in Cork and had plenty of time to get there and he was not going fast. The sun came out suddenly through a cloud and blinded him and he was pulling down his vizor when the collision occurred. Mr O’Mahony (31), had tested negative for alcohol, had a full licence, and had no penalty points. The coroner, Aisling Quilter, said the medical cause of death was due to traumatic brain and spinal-cord injury. She returned a verdict of accidental death. The brother of the late Mr Duggan, Peter Duggan, said Irish motorists should drive with lights on as in Italy, and this would pick up reflective material on cyclists dark clothing.

Killarney athlete sixth in world championships Killarney Paralympian Jordan Lee has promised to bounce back despite finishing a disappointing sixth in the high jump competition in the World Para Athletics Championships in Dubai on Wednesday.
Killarney fundraiser for Chloe’s cancer battle Killarney businesses have rallied around the family of a little sick girl who is battling a very rare neuroblastoma and further plans are in place for a fundraising quiz night to help offset the costs of her specialist treatment in Germany. The family of 22-month-old Chloe Jenkins are organising a quiz night on Friday, November 22, to raise much needed funds for the brave toddler. It will take place at the Killarney Avenue Hotel at 8.30pm. Little Chole, whose mom Denise comes from Killorglin, was featured in the Killarney Advertiser in August and again in September when football legend Kieran Donaghy donated his Sky television fee during Kerry’s All-Ireland title bid. “Since then, after completing six rounds of intensive chemotherapy, Chloe has undergone major surgery to remove 85 percent of the cancer, along with her left kidney,” her aunt Helen Kelly told the Killarney Advertiser. “The remaining tumour is entwined around major blood vessels and organs so cannot be removed surgically. Radiotherapy isn’t a good option for Chloe as she is only 22-months-old and the fact that she has only one kidney.” Chloe is currently in the Essen clinic in
Germany being assessed and will travel back to Germany later in the month for several weeks of specialist Proton Beam Therapy that will specifically target the remaining tumour and prevent damage to her remaining kidney and other organs. Helen said the family were overwhelmed with the support they have received from the business community in Killarney since they went public with their fundraising efforts in late August. So far staff and management at the Aran Sweater Market, Sceal Eile Café, Breda Hughes Jewellery and Hegarty’s Spar on the Park Road have all made contributions or organised events to raise funds. “I would specially like to mention Valerie from Hegarty’s. Staff and customers of her shop were one of the first to donate. They raised €2,200 and to get that kind of money from someone we don’t even know is overwhelming and told us that this fundraising can work,” she added.

Jordan was competing in his first world games. He entered the competition ranked second in the world but had to overcome a heel injury in the weeks leading up to the competition. Jordan cleared 1.83 metres in his first jump and extended that to 1.87m later in competition. However, on his third and final jump he failed to clear 1.91 metres, a bitter disappointment for the Killarney youngster who had previously cleared 1.92m at the Paris Grand Prix earlier this year. "I'm going to bounce back from this,” he said shortly after Wednesday, event.
“I believe that in these situations, it really shows and defines your true character, whether you can bounce back and rise above it. That's what I'm going to do. We're going to bounce back from this one and next year it will be a completely different story. I picked up an injury about a month ago that I kept low key. I injured my heel and it's been affecting me since. I was jumping through that. At the end of the day, I can't make any excuses because when you start making excuses, I feel that's when an athlete is satisfied with where they're at. I'll never be satisfied with where I'm at.”
Call to calm school traffic Killarney councillors are pushing for a number of projects to be put in place in an effort to relieve traffic in the town during school times. A motion was raised by Cllr Niall ‘Botty’ O’Callaghan at the recent Killarney Municipal District meeting. He wants to call a stakeholder meeting between schools, parents councils, Garda etc., to discuss various ways to “consolidate a park and drop off scheme”. He particularly highlighted the New Road area of town, several schools including St Brendan’s College, Killarney Community College, The Mon and Holy Cross Mercy Primary School are in close proximity to this street which also includes the Garda Station and government offices. He also raised concerns that Bishop’s Path is being used as a cut through and there is an increasing risk to pedestrians
on this narrow street. “We have a concentration of over 2000 children in this area but parents say ‘my Johnny can’t walk to school’,” said Kelleher. “The Bishop’s Path is like the Rally of the Lakes in the mornings.” He also wants to implement a cycle to school scheme and asked if officials from the Killarney Municipal District meeting would look at the feasibility of a footpath from town to Lissivigeen National School. Cllrs Donal Grady is calling for Garda support at busy times. “We, Killarney Municipal District Council, request our Killarney Gardai to do traffic duties on busy evenings at the Reeks, Daly’s, Hegarty’s and other busy locations.” Meanwhile, Cllr Brendan Cronin is calling for the construction of a footpath between Faha National School and Faha Community Centre.

Spectacular 100ft tree to illuminate Killarney A spectacular 100ft tree, festooned with close on 3,000 sparkling lights and topped with an incredible giant star, will illuminate Killarney this Christmas.

Local pharmacy to close after 93 years
It’s been a strong presence on the Killarney landscape since 1926 - but that’s soon to change as O’Donoghue’s Medical Hall on Main St - plans to close their doors for good. | By Michelle Crean The decision was taken due to the retirement of the directors and a sale of the building has been agreed. Factors such as lack of parking, the upsurge in out of town pharmacies and business rates also played a part in the decision, Maura O’Donoghue explained to the Killarney Advertiser this week. Her father Patrick ‘Paddy’ O’Donoghue, who was instrumental in establishing The Gleneagle Hotel, bought the premises in 1926 from PD Foleys. He then extended the premises into O’Leary’s Bar in 1954, and worked in the business until he died aged 88.
It was then run by his family, who now plan to retire, with a closing date set for Saturday, November 30. “Business is getting tougher,” Maura said. “And there’s a big building there that is being underutilised. Lack of parking punished us as well as the increase in out of town pharmacies.” She said it’s with regret that they say goodbye but want to thank all their loyal customers who have supported their business for decades. “We will miss it and thanks to everyone for their support. And we’d ask that customers please call before the closing date to redeem their vouchers.”
A towering Tree of Light will be located on the grounds of St Mary’s Cathedral, on the landmark giant Californian Redwood tree, just outside the main door of the Pugin-designed Church. The project is an exciting collaboration between the Christmas in Killarney Festival sub-committee and Killarney parish, creating a wonderful focal point in the town in the lead up to and during the festive season. The lights will be officially switched on following a special ceremony which will be held in St Mary’s Cathedral on the evening of Sunday, December 8. Killarney Parish Administrator, Fr Kieran O’Brien, and the project committee have extended a warm invitation to all community groups, schools, clubs and organisations, families and individuals to join in what promises to be a wonderful community celebration. The Tree of Light was first lit to mark the millennium year when it commemorated all those who lost their lives in the conflict in Northern Ireland and it was again illuminated in the mid 2000s to remember those who had been killed on Irish roads. This year’s project is all about community and it will celebrate the fact that Killar-
ney is such a wonderful town to live in at Christmas and right throughout the year. Fr O’Brien said it is wonderful that the Tree of Light will return after an absence of many years and it will bring something very special to Killarney for the Christmas season. “People are still talking about how magical it was back in the millennium year and it is a very exciting project for all of us to be involved in,” he said.
More council staff needed | By Sean Moriarty A Killarney councillor is calling for Kerry County Council to employ more outdoor staff in an effort to keep the town looking good. Donal Grady raised a motion at last week’s Killarney Municipal District meeting. He is concerned that there are not enough staff on the ground to maintain
streets and parks and that the town was relying too much on volunteers to keep the town tidy. In September Killarney received a Gold Medal in the annual Tidy Towns competition. At the time, judges praised volunteers from local groups like Killarney Looking Good. “Outdoor staff are at the bare bones,” said Cllr Grady. “Only for the volunteers we were gone.”

Columnist ANNE LUCEY gives her take on happenings in Killarney, Kerry and beyond
Killarney is crying out for a home grown third level institution This week on social media I saw there is to be a reunion of the teachers and staff of the CERT winter training school at the Torc Great Southern Hotel to take place next February. Long before that we had the school of housewifery in Lower New Street in what is now the West End. Across the way we had a school for wood crafts, based on the use of local yew, oak and beech - some of which is now in Kensington Palace. Those were the days when jarveys wore a uniform of top hats and tails. Isn’t it a great shame we in Killarney let go that history of skill sharing so painfully built up? We have lost out in adding value to the town’s main industry. We could have established a Swiss style tourism college for instance, upping the status of employment in what is a very demanding sector where high skills are needed
at all levels from the front door to the back kitchen and up house, to teaching the wildlife and the legends of the region - and we haven’t mentioned cookery. Killarney is the standard bearer for tourism. But it should long ago have identified a building - the Old Tech in New Street or the Post Office would have been ideal - linked up with third level colleges to provide language, management, guiding and other skills certification. It is not too late. We still have an opportunity with the old St Finan’s building and you can bet your bottom dollar that if that building were in Tralee or in Dingle it would have a move on it by now. The busy people of Killarney need effective public servants/politicians to advance the case. The old hospital in Dingle is being done
Climate Change “an opportunity” for tourism It is a dark cloud that does not have a silver lining - Climate Change in Ireland is set to be “an opportunity” for tourism with people fleeing the Med and New York city heatwaves for the cooler climate of Killarney. An extended shoulder season will also mean “September becomes the new August, and May the new June”, last Friday’s tourism forum in the Great Southern Hotel was told. But global warming is also having a detrimental effect on the landscape. There are more rockfalls now on Skellig Michael and more days when boats could not land on the UNESCO World Heritage Centre site, Maurice Buckley of the OPW told the Let’s Talk Tourism conference. Eco-tourism and micro-climate sites like Garnish in west Cork and gardens were experiencing “huge interest” in
the past two years, and the increase was much faster than in historic properties, he said. Professor John Sweeney of Maynooth University told of threats from invasive species like Japanese knotweed. He might have mentioned the great rhodo since he was in Killarney! Still, he had some good news for business people. The increase in temperature and changes in seasonality would be good and “an opportunity” for Irish tourism, the climate change expert conceded. By the next 40 years, perhaps June, July and August were likely to be very good and the shoulder season would be extended such that “May becomes the new June, and September becomes the new August,” Prof. Sweeney said. Long term, tourists would be escaping the intense heat of cities and the kind of heatwaves experienced in France this summer.
“

up by Údarás na Gaeltachta, for instance. Tralee will soon have a conference and events centre on the council owned land alongside the Rose Hotel which will rival all others in the region. Expressions of interest will be sought shortly for what looks likely to be a public private partnership in the county town. The Skellig third level centre in Cahersiveen is based in the new library and thanks to high speed broadband it uses video links, takes students on field trips and courses are thriving. Killarney is crying out for a home grown third level institution and in the technological age there is no good reason we should not have one. “The Mediterranean will become less attractive because of heatwaves and fires,” Professor Sweeney said. There would be an “exodus” from cities like New York in summer. “Ireland will become slowly more attractive to tourists,” he said. “You want to escape, you want to come to a cooler climate and that may be an opportunity for Ireland,” he added. Meanwhile, spas and leisure centres were consuming 30 percent of the energy in hotels, local hotelier Marcus Treacy said. Most hotels in Killarney had signed up to glass water bottles and an end to single plastic use. The conference also heard how success of the west Cork food movement had now spread across the island and food tourism was the new focus in campaigns like Taste the Island by Fáilte Ireland. “People are massively exercised by clean food,” Helen Collins of A Taste of West Cork said. “Clearly the marketing challenge for the tourism agencies is to capitalise on what’s happening elsewhere and in times of heat waves, for instance, market “Kool Killarney”.
Social housing at a “low ebb” All 59 units underway in this town in 2019 are being built by Cluid, the housing agency. Only three rural cottages are to be built in the whole of the county and all three are in the Killorglin and Cromane areas - none in rural Killarney. Killarney councillor Donal Grady (Ind) said at Monday’s monthly meeting of Kerry County Council that matters were at “a low ebb” in Killarney for social housing. “We are in dire straits in Killarney. The last houses were started in 2011 and finished in 2017,” he said of the 20 houses built by the council. He has referred to people having to live in terrible conditions. Other councillors, like Michael O’Shea spoke about west Kerry and the Dingle areas, saying adults were having to live with parents - matters were terrible there across the whole peninsula. Meanwhile there is a veritable building boom in this town with hotel and guesthouse extensions, a huge cinema and high rise luxury apartments in New Street. As we reach higher and higher for the commercial sky, we will shortly have very limited views of the mountains. The walk down Rock Road has long been ruined, the same will be true shortly in the Park Road and New Street is to be boxed in too. But we are losing sight of something else too. Where are we are going to house the staff for all this new business? And why is it planning for all large commercial developments has no levy - the same as it has for car space - for social housing? We have had levies for arts sculptures. We should have a specific kitty in Killarney where part of the monies of the existing development fees would be earmarked for social housing, for apartments for workers and single people for instance. We are looking at a review of rates - surely some could go to social housing.

The annual reunion, which is sponsored by the Killarney Advertiser, is one of the social highlights of the year for Killarney people living in London. Each year the Killarney London committee select a ‘Person of the Year’ – and Jack Ryan is the deserved recipient this year. Aside from Ryan’s celebration, the organisation, which served as a home away from home for Killarney people, will celebrate its 50th birthday on the night. The Killarney Association London was formed in 1969 by local priest Tom
Looney, who was the parish priest in Wembley at the time, Cllr Donal Grady and the late Cllr Michael Courtney. Former town clerk Michael O’Leary has been a Killarney side committee member since his Council days. “One of the most important things, in practical terms, was when young Killarney people emigrated to London there was a welcome and social system in place that still exists to this day,” he told the Killarney Advertiser. “There were always two sides to the organisation and the local committee existed to help those who wanted to move home after time away.”
Six runners took who on a marathon challenge donated the proceeds fundraised to a local school this week. | By Michelle Crean On Friday evening, €2,599.50 was presented to Knockanes National School Parents Association after locals completed October’s Dublin City Marathon. Eileen Dineen, Mary O’Sullivan, Marian O’Connell, Shane Dennehy, Nicole O’Brien and Niamh O’Connor completed the mammoth task on Sunday, October 27. Knockanes National School Parents Association this week said that they would like to express their sincere thanks to the marathon participants for helping them to make a positive difference as the support encourages their continued
commitment to improve the facilities in the school. They would also like to thank everyone who donated so generously. “On behalf of the staff and pupils of Knockanes National School, I wish to extend a huge thank you to the six marathon runners,” Principal Lucy O’Sullivan, said. “Their great efforts and the sponsorship, which was so generously donated, will go towards updating our sports equipment and further enhancing our sensory room, all of which will be of great benefit to each and every pupil in our school. We are very appreciative of all the support and generosity that has been displayed for this recent fundraiser.”
Man left a “Hansel and Gretel” trail with stolen debit cards A 52-year-old Cork man left a “Hansel and Gretel” trail with stolen debit cards through Killarney, the District Court was told. Noel O’Shaugnessy of Farranferris Park, Farranree, Cork first took a wallet from the Chocolate Hair Salon on October 24 last and €10 cash from a fitness studio next door. He used the debit cards from the wallet along Main Street and High Street - all for purchases of €30 and under. At Blackthorn House Giftshop he notched up €11.99 worth of purchases, in Quills the bill came to a further €19. There were two uses in Penneys totalling €46 and a further €19.50 in Murphy’s Ice Cream. The cards were used for €30 in Paddy
Power’s bookmakers, Sgt Kieran O’Connell outlined. The court was told Mr Shaughnessy had 183 previous convictions and some of these were for burglary. His solicitor Padraig O’Connell said his client was pleading guilty to all charges. He was suffering from a serious illness. “It was reckless. He left Chocolate and like Hansel and Gretel left a trail behind him. It all stemmed from the one matter, the theft from Chocolate,” Mr O’Connell said. Judge David Waters convicted on the thefts from the hair salon and the body fitness studio and sentenced him to seven months imprisonment. All other matters were taken into consideration and convictions imposed.

Calls to resurface Kilcummin road | By Sean Moriarty Elected members of Killarney Municipal District are divided over plans to resurface roads in the Kilcummin area. Cllr Donal Grady is calling on the Council to resurface the road between Foran’s Garage and Woodline Cross while Cllr Maura Healy-Rae has made a similar request.
However, roads in the area could be dug up again if the much awaited Kilcummin Sewage Treatment Scheme ever gets the go ahead. Killarney Municipal District officers said the roads in question were part of the 2020 Road Restoration Improvement Scheme but further meetings would need to take place between the Council and Irish Water. The result of this meeting would be considered ahead of the 2020 Roads Programme.

Rehearsals are well and truly underway in one Killarney school as they prepare to take a Disney classic to the stage this December. Killarney Community College students are planning two performances on Tuesday, December 3 and Wednesday, December 4 nightly at the college at 7pm. Auditions for the production, which is written by Alan P Frayn of Stage Right Creative Ltd., commenced on September 11 with rehearsals immediately with the staff and the cast of 13 principals and 14 chorus giving up two hours of their Wednesday and Saturday afternoons. “The school pantomime is a fantastic learning and social experience for the students,” Director Mike Lynch said. “It is a unique opportunity for staff and students to collaborate and work together in a very structured yet fun filled project.” The role of Belle was much sought after but was eventually given to Third Year
student Rachel Griffin who had wowed the entire school by winning last year’s ‘Who’s Got Talent?’. Sixth Year student Brian Harrington has the difficult job of learning and acting the dual role of Prince/Beast. The Panto Dame ‘Fifi’ is being played by Sixth Year student Tova Buckley who is relishing the role. These are ably assisted by a range of other students equally as talented from First through to Sixth Year. All departments within the school will help out with advertising and PR, ticket sales, stage and set construction and painting, hair and make-up, props and costumes, making it a real whole school effort, he added. Tickets are now on sale from the school office 064 6632164, €10 for adults and €5 for students/children.

Local student selected for trip to EU Parliament

Harry White (16), who is a Transition Year student in St Brendan’s College, is the only Killarney student selected and will board a plane on Sunday for the three day trip which will include meeting Ballydowney resident MEP Sean Kelly. Harry, encouraged by his TY coordinator PJ Lucey, entered his 500 word essay ‘How Will Life Be Different When and If
We Achieve Gender Equality’ focusing on the subtle differences he has noticed between himself and his younger sister outlining how it should be balanced for all children. “I had to do research on the movement of gender equality and I had to go with what I think it would be like.” Harry added that he’s excited and looking forward to the trip. “We get to meet Sean Kelly for dinner every night and have a trip around Brussels. We’ll have a guest speaker every day and get to visit the EU parliament on Monday.”

Pregnancy is a very special time in a woman’s life but your body will have an increased demand for vitamins. See some expert advice below
Looking and feeling good during pregnancy Pregnancy and early motherhood is a very special time for a woman and both mother and baby will have additional needs, some of which can easily be provided for through good diet and nutrition. It is important that most of what your body requires now is achieved by maintaining a healthy, balanced diet. Pregnancy supplements should not be used as a substitute for a healthy diet. They can, however, help if you think you are not eating well, or if you are feeling too sick to eat much. During this special time you will have an increased demand for vitamins and minerals, some of which are calcium, folic acid, iron, fibre and protein, all of which come in supplement form, if preferred. Should you need to supplement, there are some pre-natal nutrients specially formulated to safeguard your dietary requirements throughout all of your pregnancy, some of which include NHP Ante Natal support 60 tabs, take two per day. Another would be Solgar Prenatal nutrients 60 tabs, also two per day and may be continued during breastfeeding if desired. Some of the other supplements to consider are: • FLORADIX: Helps maintain healthy
iron levels, is non-constipating and very gentle on the stomach. Tip: Take vitamin C with iron for better absorption. • PROBIOTICS: Supporting immunity during and after pregnancy helps increase your good gut flora and is also beneficial to baby if breastfeeding. • OMEGA 3: Helps support baby’s brain, eye and nerve function during pregnancy. Always choose one formulated for use during pregnancy. TIP: Any sign of stretch marks or dry skin? Don’t panic! Be sure to take some time daily to nourish and moisturise your skin, paying particular attention to the tummy! Remember to keep your creams, oils etc., chemical-free and check out some of the pregnancy oil blends available in store.
Until next time, Stay healthy, From all at Horans.

TO KNOW:
Taking folic acid may help reduce the risk of your baby developing a neural tube defect, such as spina bifida
Santa is on his way! Magic is in the air in Killarney with the first of the Magic Parades taking place this year on Saturday, November 23. Starting at 6pm, the extra special night sees Santa, his elves and many more parade through the town as well as the magic moment when the Christmas lights get turned on! The streets of Killarney will be filled with festive lights, music, colour, snow and over a dozen bright and colourful floats! Santa has also confirmed that many of his friends will join him on the night including Minnie and Mickey Mouse as well as Frozen stars Anna, Elsa and Olaf and the gang from Toy Story! Keep an eye out for the Grinch this year, but he won’t be allowed to spoil the fun! The floats and characters will be joined by a host of Killarney’s children from many different primary schools. Leading the parade as always will be Mayor of Killarney Cllr Michael Gleeson together with his colleagues, local councillors from Killarney Municipal District. You’ll get a great view of Santa all along the parade route which takes in Beech
Road, Mission Road, East Avenue Road, College Street, Plunkett Street, Main Street and finally down New Street. There will also be Mini Magic Christmas parades on Saturday, November 30, as well as December 7, 14 and 21, all commencing at 6pm. Families can watch in relative comfort along College Street or at the end of the parade along New Street as the parade makes its way home rather than the very heavily crowded areas along Plunkett Street and Main Street. When speaking to Santa he informed the Christmas in Killarney committee that there is still time to make the ‘Nice List’ if you are on your best behaviour for December and to make sure you post your letters in plenty of time. Christmas in Killarney would like to acknowledge the support of all our sponsors and the support of our partners Kerry County Council and Killarney Chamber of Tourism and Commerce.

Pres girls enjoy 40 year reunion They came from as far away as Boston to celebrate 40 years since they completed the Leaving Certificate at St Brigid’s Secondary School. | By Sean Moriarty Four classes of 1979 were reunited at the International Hotel on Saturday night. The gathering was organised by Ann McMongale-Mangan who works in the HR department of the well-known town centre hotel. The group meet as often as they can this was their fifth official reunion since they left school - but it was extra special this time around as they were celebrating the four decades since they walked through the school gates for the final times. Abina Cremin O’Sullivan came home
from Boston to be with her former classmates. “It was extra special this year,” organiser Ann told the Killarney Advertiser. “We created a Facebook group a few years ago and it makes it very easy to stay in touch. The hotel really pulled out all the stops as it was our 40th anniversary.” The evening started with a meal in Hannigan’s Restaurant before the group enjoyed a sing-song in the bar afterwards. “Not everyone could make the meal,” added Ann. “There was great craic in the bar afterwards. Martina Riordan’s daughter Rachel was playing a gig elsewhere in town and came afterwards to entertain us with her guitar.”

Killarney man key speaker at international conferences Killarney man, Paudie Healy, CEO Universal Access was on the world stage for two international conferences within 24 hours in Dubai this week. On Tuesday he spoke about Planning, Strategies and Polices for developing accessible and inclusive destinations at the Dubai Accessible Tourism International Summit which was attended by members of the UAE Royal family and a range of International delegates. Dubai is focused to make the world’s prime tourist spots accessible and inclu-
sive to all. On Wednesday, Paudie spoke on eliminating barriers in aviation through a universal design approach at the International Air Transport Association (IATA) Global Accessibility Symposium. This was attended by leading world aviation stakeholders from regulatory, policy, designers, technology, airports and customer experience stakeholders looking to identify operational best practices and innovative technologies that will enable all persons to have accessible and inclusive travel experiences.
The new garden will be used by teachers and more importantly students at the school during home economics and art classes. Other special guests include Niamh Ní Dhuill and Ian McGrigor who run Kerry Earth Education Project (KEEP) and their aim is to bring practical, environmental and heritage education into schools through organic and wildlife gardening. The gardens began when former teacher Joyce Bambury had the vision to
make plans to create the gardens. She is now Principal of the Black Valley School and she, along with her pupils attended this week’s opening. “I thank local community groups, parents, various businesses, staff and the various other groups that raised funds and other local schools also helped with the ongoing cost of funding the project,” Liam Twomey, Principal of St Francis Special School, told the Killarney Advertiser. “We were blown away by the huge crowd that attended on the day.”
“The IATA international inaugural symposium on accessibility in air travel was a defining moment in travel tourism where there were key global decision makers in attendance from IATA’s trade association of the world’s airlines looking to make change and inclusive travel for all. They consist of 290 airlines, primarily major carriers, representing 117 countries and with the IATA's member airlines accounting for carrying approximately 82 pecent of total available seat miles in air traffic.” Mr Healy went to say that energy and drive in this conference was incredible, a real honour to be part of and he looked forward to continuing his relationship further with the international association and their members in a journey that has now commenced in developing accessible and inclusive travel for all.
WORLD CONFERENCE: Fatima Alloghani (Head of the World Expo 2020 Academy and Emiratization) with Paudie Healy (CEO Universal Access).

70th celebration includes a surprise clan gathering “The parties are only starting,” says Kathleen Kissane who celebrated her 70th birthday last Sunday at the Avenue Hotel.
BIG SECRET: Niall O'Shea celebrating his surprise 50th birthday with family and friends in Reidy's, Killarney on Friday night. Picture: Eamonn Keogh
The best kept secret in Killarney
Kathleen is the eldest of 15 and all of her nine sisters and five brothers were able to make the surprise party. And she is now looking forward to celebrating their milestone birthdays over the next few years. “There will be one every year or every other year from now on,” added the Knockeragh woman. Kathleen was brought to town on Sunday by her husband Denis, daughters
Caroline and Alice, and sons David and Kieran. She was told she was meeting a few of her sisters to celebrate her birthday, but she was not expecting the whole family to be waiting inside the door for her. “It was very emotional, it is very rare we are all together and my family did a great job in organising it and keeping it secret,” she said. “It was a fabulous night.”
It was the biggest kept secret in Killarney last week - Muckross man Niall O’Shea’s 50th birthday party – and everyone knew about it, except him! Niall, who is known in nearly every hotel and hospitality premises in town, mainly through his profession as a sales rep for a major catering supply firm and previous roles on the management teams of some of the town’s best-known hotels, was brought to town by his wife Kate and sons Keith, Jake and Rogan on the promise he was meeting his own siblings, down from Limerick for the weekend, to celebrate his big birthday. And despite meeting many friends over the last three weeks, no one uttered a word! Even when Kate suggested they go to Reidy’s for one pre- dinner drink last Friday night -he still did not suspect a thing. “They were all there, former college mates from Athlone IT and work colleagues,” he said. “My good wife told me I was going for dinner with my immediate
family and she had this idea of a pre-meal drink in Reidy’s.” Niall, who is originally from Limerick, has spent the last 25 years in Killarney. After qualifying from college with a degree in hotel management he worked in some well-known hotels like Gleneagle, The Holiday Inn and The Castlerosse. In recent years he has worked as the local rep for Dublin-based Hugh Jordan Catering Supplies and many of his customers were at Friday’s party. “One way or another they all lied to me over the last three weeks,” he joked. “Even in a town this size it is still possible to keep a secret. Many of my friends and family stayed in various hotels over the weekend, they enjoyed what Killarney does best, and were surprised as this is supposed to be the quiet time.”

Tips to grow the best garlic bulbs It is commonly accepted that there are many health benefits to garlic – we take supplements to combat colds, high blood pressure, to control cholesterol and, as my grandfather used to say, ‘to clean the blood’. The name garlic, derives from the Anglo-Saxon words, gar, meaning spear, and leac, meaning leek, but it has been cultivated for millennia. Ancient Egyptians believed it warded off infections and went so far as to put it in their tombs, while the ancient Greeks believed it gave them strength and ate it before sporting events. The Romans found it smelly, but did not mind their soldiers eating it for courage. And, as we all know, it also wards off vampires, witches and a host of other evil spirits and creatures. Does it all have something to do with the smell? Well the good news is, there are many foods, if eaten in combination with garlic, which can help reduce the odour, such as parsley, mint and rosemary. I am neither a doctor nor a dietician, but I do like garlic, and growing it is a fairly simple affair, even though many people come to me asking why
their crop fails. Unlike most vegetables, we cannot grow garlic from seed, and must buy entire bulbs. As with potatoes I recommend buying certified disease free bulbs, as opposed to supermarket bulbs. The best crop is produced from autumn plantings. Suitable varieties to plant now are Early Wight, (purple skin, stores well), Messidrome, a beautiful sweet white skinned variety, and Germidour. Separate out the cloves and plant about 20cm apart with the tip 2cm below the surface. Plant in a light well-drained soil in a sunny spot. Garlic needs at least six weeks of cold weather where the soil is less than 10 degrees in order to separate into cloves, otherwise you just get a solid bulb.
Gardai warn businesses of invoice fraud Killarney Gardaí are warning local businesses to be vigilant when receiving emails – due to a sophisticated online payment fraud currently doing the rounds. The Invoice Redirection Fraud, otherwise known as Business Email Compromise, appears to be from current suppliers requesting that they make all future payments to a new bank account. However, businesses only discover the fraud sometime afterwards when the legitimate company sending the invoice queries ‘non-payment’. Both small and large companies have been targeted, a garda spokesperson told the Killarney Advertiser.
“Very sophisticated companies have fallen for the scam and lost extremely large sums of money in the process.” Fraudsters will impersonate an existing supplier for example there may be a dot or hyphen removed or inserted to make the fraudster’s email address look almost identical to the legitimate email address of the supplier. “Killarney Gardaí are advising business owners to always make phone contact with your supplier and establish that the email received originated from them before sending any payments to a new bank account. This fraud is becoming more and more prevalent and any business that believes they may have fallen victim to this fraud are asked to contact Killarney Gardaí.”
Local schools named county winners Black Valley National School, Gap of Dunloe and Caherdaniel National School, have been named Junior and Senior county winners, respectively, of the prestigious national art competition, ‘Someone Like Me’. The pupils will join 47 other schools to compete for the much sought-after national title at an awards ceremony to be held at Dublin City Hall on Tuesday, December 3, the International Day of People with Disabilities. The competition, which is supported by the National Disability Authority, attracted more than 2,600 entries from national schools across the length and breadth of the country. Now in its fourth year, ‘Someone Like Me’ aims to raise disability awareness among primary school children and give them a greater understanding of what unites children of differing abilities. The judges were particularly impressed with the submissions from pupils and teachers at Black Valley National School and Caherdaniel National School, selecting them as county winners based on their insightful and inspirational responses to the theme. Congratulating Black Valley National School and Caherdaniel National School, Minister of State with special responsibility for Disabilities, Finian McGrath TD said that he was hugely encouraged by the growing interest in the competition. “We are exceptionally pleased with the response to this year’s competition which illustrates just how willing our
primary school teachers and pupils are to help build a more inclusive Ireland where everyone, irrespective of ability or disability, is treated with equal respect and feels like a valued member of society,” he said. The competition offers a range of prizes up to the value of €750. Entries ranged from posters and collages to large sculptural installations and multi-media pieces.

‘House Arrest’ RELEASED: NOVEMBER 15 A world-weary man’s self-imposed home confinement becomes a comedy of errors with the simultaneous arrivals of a peculiar package and a curious journalist. Karan's not left his house in months. He insists he's happier home alone - away from the chaos of the world. Then one day, two women, a giant and a small bubble wrapped gangster

barge into Karan's well-arranged life and house, unannounced. What ensues is utter chaos as Karan realises that try as he might, he can’t keep the world out forever. Shashanka Ghosh ("Veere Di Wedding") and Samit Basu direct this eccentric slice-of-life story starring: Ali Fazal, Shriya Pilgaonkar, Jim Sarbh.
‘By the Way 2’ By Ann Lane In 2010, Wordwell Books, published ‘By the Way’, Ann Lane’s photographic record of much of the public sculptures that adorn our countryside. As time passed, the author realised that there were many installations that she was not aware of when she was researching that book, as well as much new work. So, in 2017 she set out to record these pieces, and this collection of more than 1,000 images is the result of her work. Many people will have been intrigued by installations beside major road arteries, or in towns and villages around the country. The author spent many months in
research before then spending most of two years driving 34,500kms throughout the country and photographing the 1,050 items that feature in this publication. Included are some Killarney pieces: An Capail Mor, Clonkeen and The Lissivigeen Circle by Tighe O’Donogue Ross as well as a fish leaping into the air on the N22 Lissivigeen/Glenflesk Road by Eamonn O’Doherty. The collection of pieces included in the book is a testament to the creativity and talent of the sculptors and artist blacksmiths living and working among us all over the country. “For those fortunate enough to live and travel in Ireland it can provide a new perspective on our native landscape and our journeys through it. For those who have never come to our country I trust that it will arouse curiosity and interest. I hope that all those who open this book will find it as inspiring as I have.” - President Michael D. Higgins

A WEEKLY ROUND-UP OF NEWS • VIEWS FROM KERRY AND AROUND THE WORLD
INSPIRED BY DANNY CASEY
No end in sight for Australian wild fires Australia’s wild bush fires could burn for weeks according to firefighters.
Kerry artist to feature at top Cork exhibition Two Kerry artists are set to show their work at Art Source Cork at City Hall from November 29 to December 1. Norman McCloskey, a Kenmare photographer whose patience led him to the shot of a lifetime, will feature at the fair. McCloskey has had his Antarctic photography featured in National Geographic and has produced two books of photography that capture the beauty of Killarney National Park and the Beara peninsula respectively. Skellig Moon, a once-in-a-lifetime shot of a full moon aligned with the Skellig Islands, is a testament to McCloskey’s per-

sistence in the name of his craft. “Skellig Moon took me three years to capture from the time I took my first attempt,” Norman said. “On the morning that it all came together, there was stormy cloud cover. It was only by chance that the clouds broke for long enough for me to take the shot. Even to this day, people ask if the work is photoshopped, but I never tire of telling the story of how I got the shot.” A Killarney artist with a life-long background in the sciences will also feature at Art Source. Olivia O’Carra began her career as a hospital physicist in Saint Luke’s Dublin, one
of only five in that profession in the country at the time. After moving to Killarney to start a family, O’Carra taught secondary school students in physics, mathematics, biology and chemistry. She took evening classes in oil painting, and when the opportunity to take an early retirement arose in 2003, she was motivated by the first sale of her works to continue in the arts. “I had always loved art in school, but I was never in a position to follow that route before now. My first solo exhibition in 2007 was a sell-out, which was an amazing feeling.” Art Source, Ireland’s largest art fair, is branching out to Cork for the first time, and will feature 20 of Ireland’s top artists and galleries showcasing affordable painting, sculpture, photography and ceramics.
Trump’s Twitter essential in impeachment trial If you are looking for entertainment over the next few weeks, President Donald Trump’s Twitter account may will be worth a follow. His impending impeachment trial, which could see him removed from office, will provide a platform for previous unseen gaffs by Trump. “If President Donald Trump's binky is his Twitter account - and it's probably safe to assume it is - then his security blanket is his television. TV offers our
tube-addicted President a soothing glow any time of day or night while Twitter gives him something to do with his anxious fingers. Expect both to get a workout as public hearings on his possible impeachment begin on Wednesday,” reported CNN earlier this week. “Morbidly obsessed with his own demise, in the aftermath of the testimony, Trump will undoubtedly feel the impulse to offer commentary on social media. No doubt his advisers have warned him to refrain, but this kind of
The country badly needs heavy rainfall to help fight hundreds of wildfires that are currently burning in New South Wales and Queensland. Firefighters were dealt a blow on Thursday when Australian weather forecasters said no signs of substantial rains for at least three months as the land Down Under prepares to move from spring into summer. Four people have lost their lives and the wildfires have destroyed hundreds of homes and wiped out 2.5 million acres of farmland and bush over the past week.
advice hasn't stopped him yet.” The trial, which is televised live, started on Wednesday but Trump claims he is too busy to watch it. Never the less, US political magazine, ‘The Week’, on Thursday, ran the headline: ‘Trump's Twitter account is full of retweets about the impeachment hearing he's 'too busy to watch'’ White House Press Secretary Stephanie Grisham said: "He's in the Oval in meetings. Not watching. He's working." Another observer noted that there was an absence of military security in the White House area at this time. "There was no Marine standing guard outside West Wing, as is customary when POTUS is in the Oval,” noted Politico journalist Natasha Bertrand.

Insurance rip-off bill passes legislation Sinn Féin Finance spokesperson Pearse Doherty TD has this week welcomed the passage Sinn Féin’s Consumer Insurance Contracts Bill through the Dáil.

Plans for disability friendly nightclub Two friends have come up with a novel idea by organising a disability friendly nightclub in Tralee. Josh Moore, Dingle and Tommy Cole, Tralee have organised RISE this December 14 from 8.30pm to 11pm, after noticing there was a huge gap in the entertainment industry for a safe and suitable place for people with disabilities to have fun and socialise with their peers. Josh has always felt conscious about his disability when out in town at night and Tommy has had some unpleasant experiences and wanted a safe place with just some small changes to the venue, Conogh Forbes, PCP Facilitator with Enable Ireland Outreach Services, explained to the Killarney Advertiser. “It has been done in Galway and Cork and
the Kerry boys wanted to bring this type of club to our county,”she said. “They approached Benners Hotel and Nightclub and the staff and owners were beyond accommodating. A huge thanks to them for their input and openness.” The main lights are a little higher for people with visual problems, the music is a little bit lower for people with sensory issues and it’s fully wheelchair accessible with two rooms, a chill out area and also a full bar, she added. Josh will act as MC on the night and admission is €7 with your support buddy free. “Everybody is hugely welcome and it is hoped that RISE will become a regular event on the Tralee nightclub scene.” Any queries contact Conagh on 087 1954707.
Comhairle na nÓg AGM held in Killarney The Kerry Comhairle na nÓg AGM was held yesterday (Thursday) in the Great Southern Killarney. Comhairle na nÓg are child and youth councils in the 31 local authorities of the country which give young people the opportunity to be involved in the development of local services and policies. In light of the fact that Comhairle na nÓg is for young people under the age of 18 and who, therefore, have no other voting mechanism to have their voice heard, it is designed to enable young people to have a voice on the services, policies and issues that affect them in their local area.
Kerry County Council are responsible for the day to day running of Comhairle na nÓg supported by the Department of Children and Youth Affairs. Support is also provided by Kerry County Council on an annual basis from the Community Support Fund. There are currently 36 young people on the Kerry Comhairle committee. The membership profile balances age, gender, geographical location and inclusion of young people who may be seldom heard. Every young person aged between 12 and 17 has access to Comhairle na Nóg regardless of their age, gender, background or where they live.
This legislation would reform insurance contracts, increase transparency and tilt the balance in favour of the consumer. Speaking after the legislation passed Report and Final Stages in the Dáil, Deputy Doherty said ‘it is a good day for insurance policy holders, for consumers and businesses’. “Rip-off insurance costs are squeezing incomes and closing down businesses across the State,” he said. “People are wondering how their premiums can go up every year even though
they haven’t even made a claim. For the past three years the Government have done nothing to reduce insurance costs. At the same time, companies are making massive profits while we are charged rip-off premiums. Despite the cost and number of claims going down, premiums continue to rise.” He added that this new Bill will require companies to inform the customer of the past three years of premiums paid and claims received for all non-life insurance contracts. “It would also require a company to inform customers of any claim made against their policy, allowing them to submit their own evidence and informing them of the cost of any claim against their policy that has been settled.”
New Kerry brain injury support group launched Acquired Brain Injury Ireland has announced a new brain injury support group ‘On With Life’ for families in Kerry. The Kerry meeting will take place at 29 Cahereens West, Castleisland on November 26. Every year in Ireland an estimated 19,000 new brain injuries are acquired from causes including stroke, road traffic accidents, brain tumours, falls and assaults. According to the national charity, brain injuries can happen to anyone at any age at any time. “We recognise the importance of supporting family and friends as they learn
to cope with the challenges after a brain injury,” Barbara O’Connell, Chief Executive, Acquired Brain Injury Ireland, said. “Our new brain injury network ‘On With Life’ is here to support families in Kerry by providing information, guidance and support on this journey. Living with and caring for someone with a brain injury is a life-changing event. When a brain injury happens, it can be devastating, both for the individual and for their families. It can put lives on hold while people undergo intense rehabilitation to relearn things, they used to do without thinking. Relationships are an essential part of any brain injury recovery. We are here to say, you are not alone.”

one of my favourite reviews is: “I went on a six week course, once a week, in August of CACI treatments. I am now on a maintenance programme of one every six weeks. This is more than a facial - it’s exercise for your face muscles! It’s an hour and a half long of intense work with a machine on your face. The results are phenomenal. The before and after pictures that they take will amaze you and they did me!' Our brand new Synergy CACI facial machine gives everything the last machine has and much more. The new facial has the added extras of being the first ever machine to offer simultaneous LED light therapy combined with a micro-current to stimulate collagen production for an anti-ageing effect at a fraction of the price of a more invasive facelift. It works on reducing pigmentation and increase illumination of lymph, which allows the skin glow better. Without lymph the dullness and lacklustre is gone. This coming Monday, we are lucky to have the head trainer in the salon to showcase this amazing facelift machine, answer any questions and you can get to see it in action.

Brexit could be good for tourism From a tourism perspective, Brexit could lead to many advantages for Ireland, influential UK travel writer and broadcaster, Simon Calder, told the ‘Let’s Talk Tourism’ forum in Killarney last Friday. Several EU workers who are currently helping the UK to thrive will leave and they could possibly come to Ireland but there is widespread confusion about what will happen in terms of British people travelling abroad. “People don’t know what the rules will be in terms of mobile phones or passports when travelling but it could lead to an increase in visitors from continental
Europe coming to Ireland as it will be the natural arrival point,” said Mr Calder. “By opting to visit Ireland instead tourists won’t have to worry about passports or visas, driving licence regulations, mobile phone roaming charges or the non-acceptance of European health insurance cards. Brexit, for all its appalling ugliness, is going to be positive for Ireland as it is the one place you can go in Europe where you don’t have to worry about these things. The prospects for Ireland are very encouraging as it can capitalise on being an English speaking, cultured destination and it will be the natural arrival point for visitors from continental Europe.”

Killarney ploughing takes place this weekend The Killarney Ploughing Association’s third annual match will take place this Sunday at Casey’s Farm in Fossa. | By Sean Moriarty
PLOUGH ON: Killarney Ploughing Association members Mike Brosnan, Tony Wharton and Shane Godley at the Ballyheigue Ploughing Match late last month.
This is only the third time a points match will be held in the Killarney and South Kerry area since the 1960s - thanks to the re-emergence of the local club that was last year affiliated to the National Ploughing Association. There are now six ploughing associations in Kerry, the sport is strongest in the North Kerry, areas of Ardfert, Abbeydorney, Ballyheigue, Ballyduff and Causeway.
Success has already come for the relatively new club after member Mike Brosnan, qualified for the two-furrow vintage plough class for September’s National Ploughing Championship in Carlow. “It is a great day out and the views over the lakes from Coffey’s farm are unreal,” secretary Veronica Heaslip told the Killarney Advertiser. “It is a lovely event to meet and chat with people – don’t forget there is a tea van there – and the history alone with Killarney makes it an even bigger event.”
Local community group continue good work Despite the annual visit from tidy towns judges having come and gone, ‘Kilcummin Looking Good’ community group are continuing their work into the winter months. This voluntary group which aims to enhance the physical and social environment in the community of Kilcummin works tirelessly behind the scenes throughout the year. Following on from their AGM on October 29, they keenly began with their planning for the next 12 months, kicking off with a new community composting project in conjunction with St John of God volunteers in the Millennium Park located in the heart of the village. “We need your help and we’re hoping that if anyone living in the community has unwanted leaves in their garden that they would bag them and leave them inside the gate of the park,” Sinéad Collins from the group said. “They would be a great addition to help us to get the project started. Also, we
are seeking volunteers to take part in a community litter collection which takes place on Saturday, November 23. Volunteers can gather in the village at 10am. Rubbish bags will be provided and disposed of – so all that is needed is a bit of enthusiasm and community spirit. Finally, a clothes collection has been organised for Saturday and Sunday, the November 23 and 24. This will be available to anyone living in the community before, during and after Mass at 7.30pm on Saturday and at 11.30am on Sunday outside the church. It is important to remark on the hard work and efforts of not only the commit but the support and co-operation from the community. We were very successful this year and exceeded last years ‘Tidy Towns’ score by eight points overall. The judges gave valuable feedback but were very complimentary on all of the work completed to date. We would like to thank everyone involved for their support and efforts.”
HOTEL RECRUITMENT: The second Killarney Hotels Recruitment Fair will take place next February. Standing left to right were: Lisa Kirwan (Muckross Park Hotel), Emer Corridan and Kathryn Cronin (Killarney Park Hotel), Noel Spillane (CEO SKDP), Mary Kelly (Gleneagle Hotel), Milandi Basel (Great Southern Killarney). Seated were: Sarah Mannix (Lake Hotel) and Joanne Griffin (SKDP).
Launch of Killarney Hotels Recruitment Fair Seven hotels are to take part in the second Killarney Hotel Recruitment Fair taking place next February. The event, which is organised by South Kerry Development Partnership through The SICAP programme, aims to assist job seekers and employers in the hotel sector with vacancies to meet in a more informal setting. It also offers both the jobseekers and the employers the opportunity to meet a large range of potential employers and employees on the same day. The event targets job seekers both with experience in the hotel sector already but also those who are seeking a change in career and who can take up many different roles within the hotel sector. SKDP Enterprise Officer Joanne Griffin, who organises the event, said that the first event proved to be so successful this year it was decided to go ahead with it again in 2020. “Of the almost 100 job seekers who attended the event, more than one third
of them secured employment with hotels who attended on the day,” Joanne said. “Both the hotels and the jobseekers who attended also found the event very useful as it gave them the chance to get to know each other in a setting outside the direct workplace,” she added. The current hotels involved are The Great Southern Killarney, Cahernane House Hotel, The Gleneagle Group, the Muckross Park Hotel, the Aghadoe Heights Hotel, The Killarney Park and The Lake Hotel. Joanne added that she would welcome any other hotels in the greater Killarney area who are interested in taking part to get involved. “If they are interested they can simply contact me by email at jgriffin@skdp.net or 087 6152660 before December 6, so that we can get them involved.”

The Overall Winner of the Lee Strand/ Kerry Garda Youth Achievement 2019 will also be presented. “It is so important to recognise that the youth of this country are the future and they have something to say and that we within an Garda Síochána should be prepared to listen too,” Chief Superintendent Eileen Foster said. “It is important to recognise their excellence in the area of sports, arts, culture,
charity or caring for a relative or friend. The awards have a positive effect on our wider community and I would like to extend our appreciation and thanks to Lee Strand for their continued sponsorship and support over the past 22 years.” John O’Sullivan, General Manager, Lee Strand added that Lee Strand has a strong commitment to supporting initiatives within the local community. “The awards provide a great opportunity to celebrate and recognise the achievements of the young people of Kerry, who have made a positive impact within their local community.” The closing date for receipt of nominations is Monday, December 9. College Awareness Week at Killarney Community College In a bid to help students to become college-ready Killarney Community College ran a college awareness week. The event examined ways of accessing college for all students whilst also addressing other career opportunities in life. It was promoted across all year groups providing them the opportunity of engaging in college talks from Tralee IT, UL, UCC, HEAR and DARE routes into college and other Enable Access routes. Liebherr staff also met with students and shared information and experience in the STEM areas, with a particular focus on engineering. Charitable works and talks from local charity St Vincent De Paul were also given.
“The opportunities to go to third level are ever increasing,” Career Guidance Counsellor Niamh Mulligan said. “It is vital that students are properly educated on the matter before making a key decision that could affect their futures. Our College Awareness Week aims to provide our students with the key information in order to make the right decisions for themselves and their future career choices.” Junior students worked on goal setting and motivation to encourage them to begin to consider their career pathways

Senior students focused on college courses, academic progress, pathways into college and the different routes involved, the access routes provided by colleges and PLC courses and support regarding completing their CAO application and registration. “With the ever increasing numbers of our
students going onto third level, its imperative that our students are well informed and prepared to make such difficult decisions,” Principal Stella Loughnane said. “This week was an excellent opportunity to make our students aware of their options regarding third level education and the pathways of how to get there.”

Create better healthier habits Stop trying to juggle it all and choose just one thing to do. Make a decision to focus on one aspect of your health first until it becomes habit. But what really is a habit? They are the small decisions you make and actions you perform every day. According to researchers at Duke University, habits account for about 40 percent of our behaviours on any given day. Your life today is essentially the sum of your habits. When learning to juggle you don’t magically pick up three balls and start to juggle do you?
No, the primary skill is being able to throw and catch one ball at a time. Get the ball rolling, or even throwing a bit, and then add in something else. Maybe start first by cutting out drinking fizzy drinks or your evening dessert. Perhaps decide by beginning to walk 3km every day. The point is, pick one small thing to start moving the needle in the correct direction when it comes to improving your health and fitness. When you are ready, come see us. We will be here to guide you along the way, one step at a time. Head over to www.activate.ie/blog-roll/ to read more helpful hints and tips from the experts at Activate.

SKODA plans ‘Simply Older, Still Clever’ initiative SKODA Ireland has announced a new age diversity initiative, with the help of media personality and advocate for the elderly, Francis Brennan. Called ‘Simply Older, Still Clever’, they aim to recruit older individuals who may have previously worked in the motor industry. Success in the motor industry is reliant on excellent customer service and building and maintaining customer relationships. SKODA believe the older

generation possesses unrivalled skills in this area and are taking the first steps to re-introduce retirees into the workplace to fulfil customer facing duties in showrooms and forecourts across their dealer network. The motor industry workforce is under resourced in the months of January and February where 43 percent of annual new car sales are delivered to customers. It is in these peak periods SKODA believe they can utilise the retired skillset to fulfil vehicle test drives, vehicle demonstrations and vehicle customer hand overs; all the while maintaining high levels of customer satisfaction and service. The SKODA Dealer network has embraced the idea and has already begun the recruitment process. “I just turned 66 and I have no plans to retire anytime soon,” Kenmare hotelier, Francis Brennan, said. “Many of us are fitter and more physically active in our 50s and 60s than our parents were. Life expectancy is at record levels and we can expect a much longer period of healthy, active retirement. Opportunities like this will bring huge benefits to both the employees and the SKODA business in general.”

PLANTING: Killarney Tidy Town Volunteers, are looking for more volunteers to join them tomorrow (Saturday) to help plant a series of snowdrop and bluebell bulbs on Mission Road. Photo: Valerie O’Sullivan
Planting plan for Mission Road Following on from 2018’s very successful bluebell and snowdrop planting on Mission Road, the Killarney Looking Good Committee are planning further planting on Mission Road tomorrow (Saturday). It’s hoped that planting will improve biodiversity while also bringing people together. “We have an amazing National Park on our doorstep and this is a great opportunity for people to come together and enhance the link between the town and the park,” Johnny McGuire from Killarney Tidy Towns Committee said. “You don't need to be an expert garden-
er as no experience is necessary and all equipment will be provided.” The first session will be from 9am to11am and the second session from 11am to 1pm. “You don't have to come to the whole session, any help you can give will be gratefully received. Remember even an hours planting will leave a lasting legacy for the whole community to enjoy.” While you don't need to book, it would be great if people could confirm attendance to 064 37928 or killarneylookinggood@ gmail.com or through social media Apps. The event is supported by South Kerry Development Partnership, Kerry County Council and Killarney Chamber of Tourism and Commerce.
The awareness campaign is an inter-agency initiative across Cork and Kerry involving the HSE, Kerry County Council, Cork City Council, Cork County Council, local Fire Services and An Garda Síochána. The public awareness campaign was launched at St Mary’s Primary Care Centre in Gurranbraher, Cork and was attended by the Cathaoirleach of Kerry County Council, Cllr Niall Kelleher. ‘Be Winter Ready’ is a nationwide co-ordinated campaign involving statutory services which emphasises the regional coordination and preparation in place in relation to severe winter weather events and where a response to severe weather is required on a cross-county border basis. The aim is to raise public awareness about the challenges which winter can present and to advise individuals, homeowners, businesses and the wider community about the steps they can take to prepare for adverse weather like freezing conditions, snow and ice, storms and flooding. The ‘Be Winter Ready’ booklet, which
contains tips and advice for homeowners, motorists, businesses and the elderly, and which is published by the Office of Emergency Planning, is available at offices of Kerry County Council and on the homepage of the council’s website. Kerry County Council is prepared for dealing with severe weather over the winter season through its Severe Weather Assessment Team, which assesses and advises the public based on weather forecasts from Met Éireann. The council also makes preparations annually for the salting of roads and footpaths, inter-agency responses to emergencies as required, and public communications to advise the public about travel disruption. Cllr Kelleher said Kerry County Council is working hand in hand with An Garda Síochana, Kerry Fire Service, Kerry Civil Defence, and the Health Service Executive to meet the various challenges caused by adverse weather conditions. “We ask everyone to prepare for winter weather conditions and listen out for forecasts and warnings. The cooperation of the public is essential in ensuring that any issues which arise can be deal with speedily and effectively.”

FOGARTY
In loving memory of Aloysius “Weeshie” Fogarty O’Sullivan’s Place, Killarney Who passed away on 18th November 2018
On the First Anniversary of Weeshie’s death, we, his family, would like to express our heartfelt gratitude and appreciation to all those who sympathised and supported us during our sad loss. To those who called to our home, attended the Rosary, the removal, the funeral mass and burial in Aghadoe and to those who sent Mass cards, messages of condolence and letters of sympathy, we extend our heartfelt thanks. Also, thank you to those who made a donation to the Palliative Care Unit in University Hospital Kerry. We offer our sincere thanks to our family, our neighbours and our very good friends for their help and support during this difficult time. To the wonderful staff of Deenagh Medical Practice and O’Sullivan’s Pharmacy for all your help and kindness shown to us during Weeshie’s illness. To Dr. John Buckley and the staff of Bons Secours Hospital Tralee, to the amazing palliative care team, Dr. Patricia Sheahan, Dr. Mags Clifford and the staff of the Inpatient Unit and Palliative Day Centre, a sincere thanks. To our remarkable South Kerry Homecare team, Siobhain, Noreen, Liz and Margaret, your support at home was invaluable to us as a family, as was the help and kindness shown to us by Mary and Brid. We would especially like to thank Fr. Niall Howard, all the concelebrating priests, the Cathedral choir, Maura Reen and Miriam Long for the beautiful funeral Mass. To Fr. Niall, who was there for Weeshie and the family during his final days, we express our sincere gratitude and also to Fr. Jim Linehan, whose regular visits were a great source of comfort to Weeshie. A special thanks to Fiona and all her team in Radio Kerry for all their support during Weeshie’s illness, over the time of the funeral, including their Guard of Honour, and in the past year. Thank you to Killarney Legion and the East Kerry Board for their Guard of Honour, which was a very fitting tribute to Weeshie’s memory. The family would like to thank O’Shea’s Funeral Directors for their professionalism, guidance and kindness. As it is impossible to thank everyone individually, please accept this acknowledgement as an expression of our deepest gratitude. Mass will be offered for your intentions. Weeshie’s Mass will be celebrated on Sunday 17th November at 10.30 am in St. Mary’s Cathedral, Killarney.
MIRACLE PRAYER Dear Heart of Jesus, in the past I have asked You for many favours. This time I ask you this very special one (mention favour). Take it, dear Heart of Jesus and place it within Your own Heart where Your Father sees it. Then, in His merciful eyes it will become Your favour not mine. Amen. Say for three days, promise publication and favour will be granted. N.B.

Ed, for it was not my ear that you whispered into, but my heart. It was not my hand you held, but my soul. I miss you in ways I didn’t know existed, somehow 4 years have passed And my heart still aches, my tears still fall, my mind still wanders to memories and moments we shared. To have one more day.....to see you, to hold you, to hear you to tell you I love you and how happy you made me. But in all of this I’m so grateful, as I know I would rather have known you a moment than never at all, to have seen your face, your beautiful smile and spoken your name. I have been yours and you mine. Regardless of the sorrow, the sleepless nights and the years I will walk this earth carrying you in my heart and my soul. For those moments we had I am grateful. For having you and being loved by you, I am grateful. But I would give anything for just one more day with you. Until we meet again.

It didn’t take long. Just a few short hours after last weekend’s surprisingly one-sided Kerry Senior Football Championship final, some observers were already questioning the merits of East Kerry’s victory. Six clubs versus one isn’t fair in some people’s eyes (although presumably it was fair enough over the course of the last two decades when East Kerry didn’t win a thing). Such talk is a measure of how powerful this team already is, and how dangerous it can become. But how far can Jerry O’Sullivan and this young group of players go? Is talk of multiple county
championships and potentially dominating the 2020s premature? Well, yes, of course it is. But it’s fun to speculate. East Kerry have so much talent in their ranks right now and the age profile of the squad certainly suggests that there is significant scope for improvement in the years to come. Goalkeeper James Devane (35) is really the only old man, for want of a nicer way of putting it, in the squad. Kerry senior Jack Sherwood is 28 (not exactly on his last legs) and after that you’re looking at a squad of under 25s. Their best player, potentially the GOAT,

LOSING CLUBS
One possible stumbling block is the possibility of losing clubs to promotion. At present, East Kerry is comprised of six clubs: Glenflesk, Spa, Gneeveguilla, Listry, Firies and Fossa. If either of the two intermediate clubs (Glenflesk or Spa) get promoted to senior, their play-

Adam Moynihan assesses their prospects ers will become ineligible. On Sunday, Glenflesk provided three starters and three subs while almost half the current panel (13 out of 30) hail from Spa. The other side to that coin is that any senior East Kerry club who get relegated to intermediate can then join up with their divisional team. While it seems unlikely that Dr Crokes or Legion could face such a disastrous fate in the near future, you would have said the same thing about Rathmore at the start of the 2019 campaign. The club from just the right side of the Cork border have rubbed shoulders with the best of the

STAT ATTACK In spite of East Kerry’s win, it was an unusually barren decade for divisional teams. Club sides won eight of the 10 county finals since 2010 (Dr Crokes x7 and Austin Stacks x1), making it the first decade since the 1950s in which clubs won more than boards.
best in recent years, notably beating the Crokes numerous times in the East Kerry Championship. In April, with 20 minutes to play in their final Club Championship game against Legion, Liam Hassett’s team were top of Group 2 and heading for the final. However, that game turned against them and Dr Crokes’ simultaneous victory over Kerins O’Rahilly’s meant that the All-Ireland Club finalists topped the group, and Rathmore finished bottom. Last month’s defeat to the bottom team in Group 1, Kilcummin, who themselves provided seven starters to East Kerry in 2018, consigned Rathmore to intermediate for the first time in 20 years. While it would be customary in these circumstances for Rathmore to link up with East Kerry, as they did in the late nineties when the district won three County Championships in a row, unconfirmed reports suggest that it might not be a foregone conclusion. Either way, I’m sure that East Kerry manager Jerry O’Sullivan will be more than happy with his squad heading into next year’s championship.
SCHEDULE
Another plus point for East Kerry is that the revamped Kerry SFC schedule has made it easier for divisional sides to build momentum. Up until recently, Kerry’s showpiece competition was played in fits and starts. In 2017, for example, the opening rounds were played in May and July with the quarter-finals, semi-finals and final taking place in September and October. The scattered nature of the championship had been less bothersome to club sides as they have the advantage of training and playing together as a unit for the entire year. For divisional sides such as East Kerry, assembling a squad and finding suitable times to train in between the club season was a challenge. Look at it from a manager’s perspective. How can you make real progress with a group of players if you only see them a couple of times every couple of months? And it wasn’t exactly a picnic for players either. In truth, many, in recent years at least, saw playing for East Kerry as a bit of a chore. In 2018 and 2019, the County Cham-

pionship was played off in a far more timely and efficient fashion. Barring the preliminary round fixture between the two lowest-ranked divisional teams (St Kieran’s and Feale Rangers) on August 29, it took just seven weeks to complete this year’s tournament (September 21 to November 10). In fairness to the county board, they deserve great credit for streamlining their competitions; all-in-all you couldn’t really fault the manner in which the Club Championship, County League and County Championship are being run off. It has benefitted every team, club and divisional, but it has made a more marked impact on how teams like East Kerry go about their business. And looking at the honours roll, divisional sides needed a boost. The 2010s was an unusually lean decade for the boards; Sunday’s final marked only the second county final victory for a divisional side in the teens, with South Kerry’s triumph in 2015 the only other for an amalgamation since 2010. In each of the previous five decades (60s, 70s, 80s, 90s and 00s) at least five Kerry SFC finals were won by a divisional side.
CROKES
Of course, it should go without saying that the brilliance of the Crokes, who won seven out of the last 10, was a major factor in that recent decline for teams like East Kerry. In light of Sunday’s defeat, rivals will naturally be keen to bury Edmund O’Sullivan’s side but it would be foolish in the extreme to assume that they’re dead at this point. A number of key players may be in their thirties but all of those older guys made important contributions in this year’s championship, and in Michael Potts, Mark O’Shea, Jordan Kiely, David Shaw and Tony Brosnan they have enough young talent to challenge the champions again in 2020. But there’s no denying that this is East Kerry’s week and East Kerry’s year. It would be far too bold to christen this conquest ‘The Dawn of the Eastern Era’, that’s only something that can be done retroactively, but all of the pieces are there. All we can do now is sit back and see if they fall into place.
BROTHERS IN ARMS An emotional David Clifford embraces his friend and teammate Evan Cronin at the final whistle. Clifford, who scored 1-3, and Cronin, who scored 0-4, were instrumental for East Kerry on what was a momentous day for the divisional side.

East Kerry capture county title in style | By Eamonn Fitzgerald
East Kerry bridged a 20-year gap on Sunday last when they stopped Dr Crokes’ bid for four-in-a-row with a resounding Kerry SFC final victory in Tralee. x
The men from the east got off to a flying start, getting their first point after 18 seconds. Mike Foley was the scorer and he quickly followed up two minutes later to put East Kerry two points clear. Crokes failed to score in the opening stages, shooting several wides. East Kerry went three ahead before Tony Brosnan scored two magnificent points from acute angles. All-Star David Clifford was being well contained by Mike Moloney and did not score a point until the 14th minute. East Kerry made full use of the wind to lead by 0-8 to 0-5 at the interval. Man of the Match Paudie Clifford was very industrious and his incisive running at the Crokes defence provided the best opportunities for East Kerry to score. Meanwhile, Evan Cronin was making the most of his opportunities to get on the scoresheet. The Spa forward scored two fine points before half-time and added two more in the second half. Midfield possession worked out evenly
with Liam Kearney and Johnny Buckley sharing the spoils. The Crokes forwards found the going tough with Chris O’Donoghue and Niall Donohue impressing in the East Kerry defence.
14 MEN
East Kerry were reduced to 14 men early in the second half when Pa Warren was sent off for a second yellow card. Unfortunately for Crokes, the first-half wind abated and their numerical superiority was quickly negated when David Clifford broke for a trademark goal and there was nothing Shane Murphy could do about it. That left Crokes trailing by seven. Then Mark O’Shea from Crokes was sent off to leave both sides down a man. Tony Brosnan eluded Chris O’Donoghue and let fly a fabulous goalbound shot from an acute angle but agonisingly it came flying back out off the far off post. Crokes needed a goal to cut the deficit, but it was East Kerry that kicked on with two further points and in the 45th min-

AUSTIN STACK PARK ute, Darragh Roche was put through by David Clifford for their second goal. This gave the divisional side an unassailable lead of 11 points. Not even a goal by Gavin White three minutes later made that much of a difference as East Kerry played out the remaining minutes as worthy champions. With time almost up, Mike Moloney of Dr Crokes was sent off. Dan O’Donoghue of Spa was a very proud captain as he received the Bishop Moynihan Cup. This was East Kerry’s eighth title having previously won in 1956 and a three-in-a-row on two occasions (19681970 and 1997-1999). They also won the inaugural All-Ireland Club Championship in 1971, the only year in which divisional boards were allowed participate in the competition. Sunday’s result means that Club Championship winners Austin Stacks will represent Kerry in Munster. They face Cork kingpins Nemo Rangers on Sunday.

“In April and May I was thinking, will I pack it in?" In April, veteran goalkeeper James Devane was dropped for Spa’s crucial Intermediate Championship opener against Templenoe. Hurt by the decision, the 35-year-old teacher gave serious consideration to quitting football entirely. Little did he know that just a few short months later, he’d be in Austin Stack Park on county final day, standing between the sticks for the best team in Kerry. Devane was a mainstay in an otherwise youthful East Kerry outfit who defeated Austin Stacks, Kerins O’Rahilly’s, Dingle and St Brendan’s en route to the final of the County Championship and on Sunday he played his part in a spectacular win over the holders, Dr Crokes. It was East Kerry’s first county final triumph since 1999. The result capped an incredible turnaround for Devane, who went from surplus to requirements at his club to first choice for a supremely talented divisional selection in a matter of months. Could he have seen it coming? “Nah,” he says, emphatically. “In April and May, I was thinking, ‘Will I pack it in?’ But I suppose I’d be stubborn enough that way. I wanted to get my place back. Speaking to the Killarney Advertiser this week, Devane admitted that getting dropped for the Templenoe game “left a bit of sour taste”. “I had a decision to make then. I had to either try and get my place back or I could have walked away. I suppose I stuck it out, and Sunday was a nice reward for that.” He won back his place in the Spa team and his performances attracted the attention of East Kerry manager Jerry O’Sullivan, who included Devane in his squad ahead of the first round of the championship in September. What makes Devane’s redemption story all the more remarkable is the fact that despite being eligible to play for East Kerry for the majority of his career, 2019 marked his very first season as first choice keeper. The Spa native had previously served as back-up to Fossa’s Colin Myers in 2017 and Kilcummin’s Brendan Kealy in 2018. And, as Devane himself is quick to point out, he may well have been wearing the No. 16 jersey again this year were it not for an untimely injury for last year’s Kerry minor keeper Marc Kelliher, who hails from Glenflesk.
“Marc, who is a very good goalkeeper, was injured there for a while at the start so I got to play the challenge matches. He was just a bit late coming back. It worked out well for me. “It’s my first year starting with East Kerry - I played no football with East Kerry ever - so this is serious bonus territory. Personally, it’s a bit surreal. It hasn’t sunk in properly yet but it’s a nice medal to have. There’s nothing stopping the younger fellas from winning three or four but for someone of my age, you’d probably take the one and be happy about it.” East Kerry were slight underdogs heading into last weekend’s decider but they blitzed the four-in-a-row-chasing Crokes, eventually running out 2-14 to 1-7 winners. Reflecting on the match itself, Devane heaped praise on fellow Spa man Liam Kearney, a former All-Ireland-winning minor captain who has been dogged by injuries in recent years. “Liam had a great game in midfield and that gave us a big platform to work off. We had them pinned back for a long time. Even though we were only up three points at half-time, I didn’t think we were under serious pressure. I thought they were going to put more pressure on our kickout, like they did against South Kerry, but on Sunday we were able to get the ball out. “It’s a very young team but they’ve all won with the Kerry minors and with the Sem, so they’re just used to it. That’s the one major difference I see with a lot of the younger fellas coming through: instead of hoping to win, they just go out and expect to win. They’re all able to handle themselves as well; there’s no fear of them. And any time you have David Clifford on your team, you have a good chance.” Clifford and co. will be back next year, as will the Crokes (Devane, half-joking, says that “they’ll never go away”), but what about Devane himself? Will he be back in the red and white (or white and red in his case) of East Kerry in 12 months’ time? “Hopefully. I’m not retiring anyway, we’ll put it that way.”

RATHCOONEY On Sunday last the Killarney RFC U18.5s travelled to one of the stalwarts of Cork Rugby, Old Christians RFC, the home of famous faces like Donal Lenihan and David Corkery. The team was without some of the U17s who were busy representing Kerry in Musgrave Park so it was the job of the remaining players to wear the Killarney hoops with pride. The game started like a tornado with the fast feet of Gary Randles zig-zagging their way around and through six of the Old Christians players to plant the ball firmly over the line and open the scoring. Christians then pushed Killarney hard and, after repeated crashes against the defensive line, managed to get a try back. With their heads now up, Christians again piled on the pressure and eventually succeeded with a wide move that was rewarded with a try. It was 10-5 at half-time but with their heads up, Killarney pushed hard and were rewarded with a penalty that was slotted over by Ciarán O’Brien. Killarney took the lead with a break on the left wing by Matt McAuliffe that Simon Zebo
himself would have been proud of, and a powerful crash over the whitewash from John McCarthy made it 17-18 to the visitors. Unfortunately for Killarney, Christians were awarded a penalty with two minutes to go and they duly converted to steal a narrow win. This was a great opportunity for the coaches to see some new combinations at work with changes on the wings, centre, both half-backs, front row and back row. To a man Killarney could not have worked harder and they will undoubtedly learn from the mistakes made. Every player got game time. Next week the lads are away to Killorglin.

Kerry U13s impress against South Tipp The Kerry U13 Emerging Talent Squad welcomed South Tipperary to Mounthawk Park last weekend for the third round of the Subway Inter League. Both sides had two teams on duty on the day. In the Inter League game, the points were shared in a 0-0 draw. Aaron Doyle went closest to breaking the deadlock for Kerry in the first half. In the second period South Tipperary created some chances of their own

Kerry pushed on looking for the winner and Luke Doolan, Sam Slattery and Liam Hennigan were all narrowly off target as both sides had to be happy with a point each. KILLARNEY SPORTS CENTRE
| By Eamonn Keogh Scotts Lakers’ winning form continued with a convincing 20-point win over Sligo All-Stars in Killarney Sports Centre last Saturday night. In truth, apart from a brief spell in the third quarter, the home side were never really troubled by the northwesterners. The Lakers started well, racing into a 7-0 lead with a determined Victor Martínez making a noticeable impact from an early stage. Toby Christensen and Mick McGinn also impressed to help the home side gain a 22-12 lead late in the first period. Sligo stayed in touch, however, and pulled it back to 22-16 at the end of the quarter. A brace of quick three-pointers from
Brian O'Neill along with further scores from Martínez pushed the Lakers 30-20 in front after three minutes of the second. Aaron Jackson and Mick McGinn also did well to extend the advantage to 37-22 midway through the quarter and despite the best efforts of Alvaro Romo, Jesus San Martin and Brandon Berry, the home side still enjoyed a 15-point lead, 44-29, at halftime. Lakers continued to dominate upon the resumption with Jackson, Christensen and Mark Greene hitting big baskets to open up a 51-33 lead. However, Sligo then enjoyed a purple patch with Romo and Berry leading the way as they went on a 13-0 run to narrow the gap to 5146 with four minutes left in the third
quarter. Sligo veteran Shane O'Meara, a player with strong Killarney connections, was also a commanding presence under both boards and the visitors looked like they could cause an upset. Thankfully for the hosts, the danger didn't last long and the Lakers regained control with a timely three-pointer from the outstanding Toby Christensen. Carlton Cuff and Aaron Jackson also added scores to make it 62-52 at the end of the third. Jackson and Christensen continued to impress as the Lakers opened up a commanding 82-55 lead midway through the final quarter. There was no way back for Sligo after this with Lakers coach Shane McCarthy running his full bench; Keelin Houlihan, Jamie O'Sullivan and Keith O'Grady made notable impressions. In the end, the Lakers had 20 points to spare. Aaron Jackson and Toby Christensen led the way in scoring terms while big Toby also pulled down 15 rebounds. Carlton Cuff also impressed under the
boards, grabbing 12 rebounds, while Spaniard Victor Martínez enjoyed his best game of the season, working hard on both ends of the court. Following the victory over Sligo, Scotts Lakers have a 6-2 winning record and share joint second place on the league table with Fr Mathews and LYIT Donegal, who both have a record of 6-1. Although the Lakers have played one more game, they have a chance to go ahead of Fr Mathews when the sides clash this Saturday night, November 16 at 7.45pm in the Fr Mathews Arena in Bishopstown.

R een earns Young Rally of the Year nomination
Headford's Kieran Reen has secured a wildcard nomination for the 2019 Motorsport Ireland Young Rally Driver of the Year Award. Reen (25) impressed throughout the year, winning his class on every rally he entered, taking a pair of overall junior wins as well as being crowned 2019 Southern 4 Junior Rally Champion. Reen is aiming to move up the ranks and would like to contest the 2020 Irish Tarmac Rally Championship in an R2 car. The winner of the Motorsport Ireland Billy Coleman Young Rally Driver of the Year Award will now receive €100,000 worth of support to contest rallies nationally and internationally in 2020. |
R ally Australia cancelled due to bushfires
Craig Breen and Paul Nagle’s hopes of contesting a third rally for the Hyundai Motorsport team did not materialise after organisers of Rally Australia, the final round of the World Rally Championship, took the decision to cancel the event due to the continuing public safety concerns as a result of bushfires in the Coffs Harbour area of New South Wales. Organisers took the decision in the early hours of Tuesday morning.

B elgian superstar Paul Lietaer enters Killarney Historic Rally
One of the biggest names in Belgian rallying, Paul Lietaer, has entered this year’s Rentokil-Initial Killarney Historic Rally in an Opel Manta 400. It will be the former Belgian national champion’s fourth visit to Killarney having previously contested the Rally of the Lakes in 1984 and 1987 and the Historic Rally in 1998. He will use the same Manta that he used to win the Belgian title in 1988, which is also the same car he had in Killarney a year earlier. Multiple British Historic Rally champion Jason Pritchard has also placed an entry for the rally. Pritchard will drive a Ford Escort owned by former Welsh international rugby player Scott Williams. |

INTERCOUNTY: Carlow senior Chris Crowley, who hails from Glenflesk, recently lined out for Crossmaglen in the Ulster Club Championship.
From Glenflesk to Crossmaglen | By Eamonn Fitzgerald There was a strong local connection in the recent Ulster Club Championship game between Clontibret of Monaghan and Crossmaglen of Armagh. Wing back on the Crossmaglen team was Chris Crowley of Glenflesk. He was marking Conor McManus who scored six points (five from frees) in Clontibret’s 0-10 to 0-9 win. Chris left Glenflesk to study electronic engineering at Carlow IT and joined Palatine, the local Carlow club. He won back-to-back Carlow titles in 2005 and in 2006 and Carlow boss Turlough
O’Brien picked him on the county team. He marked Dublin’s Diarmuid Connolly in the 2017 Leinster Championship, the same day that Connolly picked up his ban for that infamous push on Ciarán Branagan. After playing in the league this year with Carlow, Chris went to the USA for the summer. He ended his connection with Carlow, met a girl from South Armagh and headed north to Crossmaglen where he made the team for the county quarter-final against Silverbridge. He went on to win an Armagh Championship with Crossmaglen. If he had taken another road, he might have been lining out with East Kerry in the county final last Sunday.
