Michael's feeling great at 108!
It was yet another very special birthday for Ireland's oldest man as Michael J O'Connor celebrated turning 108 on Wednesday! | By Michelle Crean And unlike the confines of COVID last year, Michael got to have a special celebration, a meal with his closest family and friends at his home in Muckross - and he even made a speech! "I'm doing great," Michael told the Killarney Advertiser. "It was strictly a family party, it's what I wanted. It wasn't an open house. There was no comparison to last year as everything was closed down." Wednesday began with a visit from local priest Fr Kieran O'Brien followed by family and many many well wishers. "You couldn't move, the room was full," he said, although his daughter Avril explained that it was all done in a safe so-

cially distanced manner. "I was tired [afterwards] but thankfully not as tired as I thought I'd be. I feel quite active this morning [Thursday]." Micheal was born in Glencar in 1913 and wasn't expected to live past the age of six after contracting the Spanish Flu. He has also lived through the War of Independence, the Civil War, World War One and
Two. In February this year Michael received the first dose of the Pfizer/BioNTech vaccine at Deenagh Torc Medical Practice, Reeks Gateway, and said then that he was looking forward to "life without fear". He came to Killarney 40 years ago with his wife Joan, who sadly passed away in 2008.
He puts his longevity down to a daily glass of whiskey. Up until four years ago - at the age of 104 - he was driving, and remembers his first car was a Model T Ford. "I was driving cars from 1930 until 2017. The old Model T Ford had no gears, no accelerator and there was a throttle for slowing down and for normal driving." He also remembers driving a Volkswagen Jetta up until he stopped driving and never experienced power-steering. Michael, who has featured in a number of television documentaries, was quite active and independent up until COVID hit 19 months ago. These days he enjoys time at home with his family, good food, some daily exercise, plenty of rest and a glass of whiskey. In his family speech he thanked those closest to him for their support saying "everyone has contributed to my happiness", and finished with some inspiring words. "Every day is an exciting day and you learn something from it."
Killarney retains Purple Flag status Killarney has been officially accredited with being a vibrant, exciting and safe place to live in and visit by night. It has been confirmed this week that the town has retained its prestigious Purple Flag status which is an international awards scheme for towns and city centres that excel after dark. The recognition, considered a major international brand, is the gold standard for night time destinations and, like the Blue Flag scheme for beaches, recipients must meet exceptionally high standards and strict criteria to receive approval to fly the flag. Killarney has received Purple Flag accreditation annually since 2014 and the official emblem flies proudly over the town hall as well as in the Glebe car park and Killarney Garda Station. Killarney’s Purple Flag Working Group is spearheaded by the Chamber of Tourism and Commerce and it involves Killarney Municipal District Council, An Garda Siochana, local businesses, community or-
ganisations and schools. Purple Flag locations are deemed vibrant and well-managed between 5pm and 5am and the accreditation recognises excellence in the management of the evening and night-time economy and the creation of a safe and friendly environment in which to live, socialise and work.
ADJUDICATION PROCESS
Factors taken into consideration during the adjudication process included after dark safety, cleanliness, vitality, cultural stimulation, lighting, the provision of public transport and broad appeal. Mayor of Killarney, Cllr Marie Moloney, said for Killarney to secure the Purple Flag this year was a more significant achievement than ever given the unprecedented two years experienced in the town. “It is great so see that Killarney had emerged from the pandemic with its reputation as a great place still very much to the fore. The recognition just goes to prove that Killarney is a great place to be and a great place to visit,” she said. Purple Flag Committee Chairman, Frank

Doran, has attributed the success to the quality and commitment of the working group and the businesses in Killarney town who operate in the night-time economy. “In order to retain the Purple Flag we must continue our work on an everyday basis to develop the entertainment, food, hospitality and public transport offering in Killarney,” he said. “The town will be subject to assessment again in 2022 and we look forward to working with local businesses and key stakeholders to help promote the area to the widest possible audience,” Mr Doran added. Killarney Chamber of Tourism and Com-
merce President, Niall Kelleher, said the last two years have not been what anyone expected and businesses and locals have had to explore new territory in the fightback against COVID-19. “Retaining the Purple Flag is very important as Killarney needs every advantage it can get in order to recover from the impact of the pandemic. “People all over the world are very much aware of just how wonderful Killarney is as a visitor attraction and as a welcoming, busy and fun place to be and this latest success just goes to prove that Killarney is just as charming after dark as it is by day,” Mr Kelleher said.

Parish launches major church refurb fundraiser | By Michelle Crean A fundraising event is being dubbed the 'Concert of Freedom' to mark the first such event since the pandemic began - and it's to help raise much needed funds for three churches in one parish.

Local writer signs with JK Rowling's publishers
Glenflesk locals are hard at work behind the scenes organising the event for Bank Holiday Monday (October 25) with Country Music singer Sandy Kelly as the main act, supported by Gerry Guthrie and Lorraine McDonald in the INEC at 8pm. Fr Kevin McNamara, who moved to Glenflesk Parish in August, is spearheading the Glenflesk Parish Church Maintenance Fund and originally booked Sandy Kelly for a fundraiser in his previous North Kerry parish. "I had Sandy Kelly booked to come to Moyvane but I was changed to Glenflesk on August 4," Fr Kevin told the Killarney Advertiser. "She's been very supportive. It'll be a great event. She has a great story to tell." Fundraisers will be ongoing for the three
churches in the parish but the immediate focus will be on Barraduff Church, he explained. "The parish has three churches and we're setting up a parish fund for refurbishment and upgrading works. It'll be an ongoing maintenance fund. This concert is to start it. Barraduff Church is the most urgent as it's in an emergency state. The roof is quite suspect and the electrics need to be done." He said that he recently formed a new parish committee who will be meeting next week to discuss any changes to the concert date due to Government and NPHET advice. "There is a 600 limit and the proper procedures will be in force. I would encourage people to view this as a concert of freedom and there'll be a little gift for everyone to mark this first concert." Tickets are €30 and available from the INEC ticket office, from the parish office in Glenflesk, and after Mass in St Agatha’s, Our Lady Of The Wayside – Clonkeen, and Sacred Heart Church – Barraduff, this Sunday.
A local woman is hoping to have the same success Harry Potter author JK Rowling after being signed by the same publisher. | By Michelle Crean And not only that, but talented Barraduff woman Olivia Howe - who writes under the pen name Olivia Hope - has signed a three book deal with Bloomsbury who are famous for working with award-winning writers. Bloomsbury recently announced the acquisition of 'Be Wild, Little One', a lyrical anthem of courage and imagination from the debut author, which will be published in May 2022. Olivia’s second book, 'Little Lion Girl' - illustrated by bestselling, award-winning Fiona Woodcock, will be published in 2023, with a third book scheduled for 2024. Olivia has a special love for children's fiction, and before becoming an author, she was a former record-breaking athlete, and competed internationally. "I have been writing for about 10 years," Olivia, a mother of two boys, told the Killarney Advertiser this week. "I have also worked with children using imaginative play." When her youngest child was born Olivia said she couldn't find a book about a strong robin. "I decided to write my own. It was something that just happened and that was the starting story." Then during the Cork World Book Festival she pitched her work to a scout who
loved her ideas. The story is inspired by nature with the uplifting picture book celebrating the wildness in everyone as well as the beauty of the world around us. "We [JK Rowling] have the same publisher and I still don't quite believe it! I can't wait until it's published next May." Olivia currently works as a Creative Learning Assistant in Siamsa Tíre, Tralee, creating the story behind the acclaimed art exhibition for children, 'A Way Home'. She added that she was inspired by the beautiful surroundings Killarney has to offer for the nature side of the book. "One of the scenes near the back pages looks like Killarney National Park." Pari Thomson, Commissioning Editor, Bloomsbury Children’s Books, said "Olivia Hope is a huge talent and we’re thrilled to be working with her". "Brought to life by Daniel Egnéus’s luminous illustrations, 'Be Wild, Little One' is an unforgettable journey through the wonders of the natural world. I hope that its uplifting magic and beauty will enthral readers far and wide." Shirley Hughes, famed author and illustrator of more than 200 books spanning 60 years called 'Be Wild, Little One' an "outstanding book to enchant readers of all ages" - high praise indeed for the Irish debut. 'Be Wild, Little One' is available to pre-order from bookshops.

€1.7m allocated to Killarney district roads | By Sean Moriarty Residents of some of the more-rural areas surrounding Killarney town will welcome funding allocations for road improvement works. A total of €1,766,014 is to be spent on road improvement schemes in the Killarney area over the next three years. This includes €187,425 to be spent on the Loo Bridge to Poulgorm section of the R-569. The Agahdoe to Knockasar-
tnet Cross section of the L-2019 will get €174,930 while the problematic Finnegan’s Cross junction is in line for €107,100. Public welcome to see new state-ofthe-art facilities With brand new dressing rooms, a state-of-the-art fitness centre and gym, a referee’s room, a training pitch, and a new walking track, locals are keen to show off their new facilities. | By Michelle Crean Kilcummin GAA Club are now inviting the public to the official opening of their new facilities on Sunday, October 24. It will kick-off at 2.30pm by County Board Chairman Tim Murphy and all are welcome to attend. "Members and non-members are welcome to come and take a look around and to be a part of this important occasion," PRO for the club, Mike O’Riordan, said. The upgrading of the club facilitates, which started in 2019, was made possible by generous support of club members and supporters from near and far, as well as funding received from the Munster Council and Sports Capital Grants. The Executive and the Development
Committee of the club have worked hard to bring the project to fruition but it is the countless hours of the dedicated and committed volunteers that ensured it became a reality. "It could not have happened without this collective effort. The new facilities are a huge source of pride for the club and local community and the official opening is an event to celebrate this huge community project." Club officers will be available to chat to anyone interested in memberships of the fitness centre or walking track and club merchandise will be available to purchase on the day. Light refreshments will be served. "A Céad Míle Fáilte is extended to all," he said.

National TV exposure for local campaign | By Michelle Crean
A local group hosting a life-saving day tomorrow (Saturday) are to receive huge exposure on national TV after a crew came down to interview them about their campaign. Members of Killarney Cardiac Response Unit (KCRU) - who are planning a 'Restart a Heart Day' to raise awareness about life-saving techniques - invited journalist Paul Byrne and a Virgin Media TV crew to town this week. It's hoped their campaign will be broadcast tonight (Friday) or tomorrow (Saturday). The KCRU event takes place tomorrow in ANAM Arts and Cultural Centre between 10.30am and 4pm as part of the European Restart a Heart Day. It'll include CPR demos, public information, an art display, a video launch with many prizes to be won. "The crew interviewed Community Re-
sponder Helen Duggan who explained the events taking place on Saturday," Kevin O'Leary from KCRU told the Killarney Advertiser. "European Restart a Heart Day was founded with the support of the European parliament and takes place on October 16 every year. We're spreading the message that 20 minutes of your time could make all the difference saving a life." In 2021, the focus of the event is on survivors with the hashtag #CPRSavedMyLife. "With this campaign we want to create awareness that everyone can learn CPR and facilitate BLS courses in schools and public locations." He said they hope that Kerry TDs Danny Healy-Rae, Brendan Griffin and Minister for Education Norma Foley will be in attendance throughout the day, and the public are invited to attend. "Find out how simple actions can save lives. Prizes include a three day First Aid course valued at €300, two First Aid kits, and a voucher for a local business."
Murphy remains on course for jockey title | By Sean Moriarty Champion jockey Oisin Murphy could win the Flat Jockey Championship for the third time this weekend. The season is set to go to the wire with the Killarney Jockey in a straight fight with William Buick. The series will reach its dramatic conclusion with the Guineas Festival at Ascot tomorrow (Saturday). At the time of writing Murphy has 150 wins so far this season while his title rival
has 146. Tomorrow is a straight fight between the two jockeys with third-placed Tom Marquand now out of the running on 115 wins. Murphy won the 2020 title race with 142 wins compared to Buick who won 134 events. Murphy has endured a rollercoaster year, he has won the title for the last two years and victory this season would put him in line for a crack at Pat Eddery’s four in a row which was achieved between 1974 and 1977. Last year he was cleared of cocaine use at a meeting in France and last weekend he
missed a race at Newmarket after failing a pre-race alcohol test. In a statement issued on Twitter, Murphy apologised for last Friday’s incident. "I was requested to take a breath test at Newmarket today. I blew under the drink drive limit but over the riding limit. I’m sorry to all the people I’ve let down today. I take full responsibility,” said his social media post. Ironically, tomorrow's championship could be decided if Murphy rides the Andrew Balding trained ‘Alcohol Free' to victory in the Queen Elizabeth stakes.
ON TARGET: Killarney jockey Oisin Murphy could win the Flat Jockey Championship for the third time this weekend.

SURPRISE: Brian Moore who dedicated his life to promoting Killarney as a tourist destination retired this week. Photo: Grigoriy Geniyevskiy
Surprise retirement party for tour giant
A travel agent who was responsible for bringing hundreds of thousands visitors to Ireland celebrated his retirement from the industry with a surprise party in Killeen House on Wednesday night. | By Sean Moriarty Dubliner Brian Moore ran Brian Moore International Travel (BMIT) in Rhode Island for close to 40 years. His career in the travel industry goes back over 50 years, his first job in the US as a Shannon Travel rep in Boston before going out on his own. One of his biggest contracts was bringing American football to Dublin. Back in 1989 BMIT was the sole travel agent for the Boston College v Army Black Knights game played in Lansdowne Road. BMIT brought 10,000 people to Ireland on that occasion and the majority of them included Killarney on their schedule. Throughout his career his local affairs were handled by his sister Stella O’Shea from Rock Road. “I handled all of his on the ground work, like meeting and greeting,” she told the Killarney Advertiser. “There was never a cross word between us.” The formidable team always included
both Galway and Killarney on their tours. “He would say that "I made the promises and Stella kept them",” she added. During his distinguished career he brought thousands of visitors to Kerry. His achievements included being inducted into the Order of Innisfallen in 2015. He sold BMIT to a larger travel agency in 2000 but continued in the travel industry working for outfits like CIE International and Brendan Vacations. Stella organised a surprise retirement party for her brother at Killeen House this week. He thought he was accompanying 11 US visitors on an evening meal but when he arrived he was greeted by guests like Mayor of Killarney, Cllr Marie Moloney, and Niall Kelleher in his role as the President of Killarney Chamber of Commerce and Tourism. “He rang me during the day just for a chat, it was very hard not to tell him what was going on but I couldn’t do it as it would have ruined it for everyone.”
Greywind announce debut hometown concert | By Michelle Crean Killarney band Greywind have announced that they will be playing their debut hometown headline show at the INEC Club early next year. Formed by siblings Steph and Paul O'Sullivan, Greywind have been called "The best band to come out of Kerry" by The Irish Times and have performed live at the biggest festivals in the world such as Reading and Leeds Festival, the Isle of Wight Festival, Download Festival, Rock Am Ring in Germany and have supported The Coronas at the INEC Arena.

Children left their worries behind them last week as a special workshop and story-time helped them to relax and express their feelings. Katie O'Donoghue, Art Psychotherapist and author, visited the Junior and Senior Infants of Múintear Fiona's Class, in Coolick National School, Kilcummin. The 31 children participated in a therapeutic and creative 'Little Squirrel' workshop. Katie, an accredited Art Psychotherapist, and now author of 'The Little Squirrel Who Worried', facilitated an afternoon which incorporated storytelling and ther-
apeutic creative exercises to help the children understand, express and manage their worries. "The children were an absolute pleasure to meet and really engaged so well, sharing and expressing their worries with me, and their teachers," Katie told the Killarney Advertiser. "The visit to the school was an absolute joy and I am very grateful to the children, parents and teachers for having me in." In what has been a difficult year and a big change with the start and return to school this autumn, Katie hopes that the book can be used as a resource at home and in the classroom for children who may need some support.

National plan for local projects “lacks detail” | By Sean Moriarty Several Killarney projects have been earmarked for funding in the new National Development Plan (NDP) that was announced last week. However, Mayor of the Killarney Municipal District Marie Moloney said the document, despite running to 182 pages, lacks detail and clarity and that the people of Killarney “deserve to know exactly what is going on”. Under the €165 billion plan, projects like the Killarney Community Nursing Unit, new amenities at Killarney National Park and the Destination Killarney marketing campaign have all been earmarked for funding. The plan promises “investment in outdoor recreational facilities in Killarney National Park”, but Cllr Moloney said that this "lacks detail”.
“What are these additional facilities they are talking about? The National Park and Wildlife Services is not exactly known for its investment in the park,” she told the Killarney Advertiser. “This lacks detail and the people of Killarney deserve to know exactly what is going on." The document, issued by the Department of Public Expenditure and Reform and entitled ‘Project Ireland 2040’ also mentions the Farranfore to Killarney new road scheme but this and other national road projects, she said “were part of the previous NDP and are subject to further approvals”. “What do they mean by this?” Cllr Moloney added. “This was included in a previous plan but it never happened, it never came to fruition, does this mean it is not happening at all now? It all looks good on paper but until we see shovels on the ground it means nothing.”

Fire service offer advice to the public | By Michelle Crean It was all about creating awareness of fire safety on Saturday as local firefighters took to the streets to dish out some advice. With the winter months closing in, members of the Fire Service are keen to help home owners understand the best ways to keep their homes safe. Two firefighters were present in all towns across the county on the day as part of Fire Safety Week including Martin O'Grady and Anthony Breen of Killarney Fire and Rescue in Killarney town. "It's important people of all ages understand the dangers of fire, especially coming in to this time of the year," Martin told the Killarney Advertiser.
BEFORE: Brooke Sugrue from Kilcummin pictured with long hair before she cut it for charity.
Some advice he gave out includes: Don’t overload electrical sockets, check smoke alarms once a week, use a spark guard with open fires, and clean your chimney at least once a year. “In the event of a fire, get out, stay out and call 999. Plan an escape route in the event of a fire. Working smoke alarms save lives.” And when it comes to bonfires, the advice is to "only attend supervised bonfires". "Don't start fires with accelerants such as flammable liquids, petrol or diesel." He added that many incidents can be prevented through education and carrying out good fire safety practice. "We also carry out a school's programme which will commence shortly after the COVID restrictions are eased further."
AFTER: Brooke after the cut with shorter locks.
Brooke's kind deed will benefit sick kids Not only did one young girl decide to chop 12 inches off her hair but she also raised over €1,000 to help sick kids. | By Michelle Crean Nine-year-old Brooke Sugrue from Pairc Chuimin, Kilcummin visited Séan Taaffe's Hair Salon in Killarney recently to cut her hair for charity, following her First Holy Communion in Our Lady of Lourdes Church, Kilcummin, on Saturday, September 25. Secret Balloons left her a balloon to mark the occasion. Brooke then donated her hair to The Little Princess Trust and is currently raising funds for the LauraLynn charity. So far she has raised over €1,000 and far exceeded her original target of €250. Her mom Elaine Sugrue explained that she received great support from everyone they know including a lot of extend-
ed family. "Broke let her hair long for her Communion," her mom told the Killarney Advertiser. "I said it'd be a nice thing to do to cut it for charity. She was very excited and she's now very proud because she knows she helped others who need it. We are very proud of her. She has quite a lot of extended family and they're amazed at what she's achieved." School principal Gillian Sheehan added that the school community is also very proud of their Third Class pupil. "We are all very proud of her and wish her the best with this thoughtful and kind deed." To donate go to: idonate.ie 'brookeslocks-of-love-for-lauralynn'.

Former footballer to launch new book | By Sean Moriarty
Former Senior Kerry footballer and 'Dancing with the Stars' winner Aidan O’Mahony will be in Eason next Saturday to sign copies of his new book. The Rathmore man enjoyed a distinguished career in the green and gold jersey, making 70 championship and 85 league appearances for Kerry between 2003 and 2017. In January 2017, O'Mahony won the RTÉ 'Dancing with the Stars' series with pro-
fessional dancer, Estonian Valeria Milova. His new book ‘Unbroken’ is an account of the discipline it takes to be part of one of the country’s most successful Gaelic football teams. It is also a story of managing external and internal expectations and pressure, and of the importance of knowing when to ask for help. “I am really looking forward to meeting everyone next Saturday, great to finally release my book and I hope people enjoy it,” he told Killarney Advertiser. O’Mahony’s Killarney book signing will be the first of many around the country in the run up to Christmas.

Killarney Advertiser's Grigoriy Geniyevskiy was out and about this week chatting to locals and getting their reaction to pedestrianisation of the town centre
Pedestrianisation poll: Our readers have their say The question of pedestrianisation in the town centre has divided Killarney for years but a survey by the Killarney Advertiser this week shows the town slightly more in favour of it. | By Sean Moriarty A total of 37.14 percent of respondents want the pedestrianisation of Plunkett St to remain as it is – closed to traffic on a permanent basis while 24.76 want it to go back to its pre-pandemic arrangement where the street was only closed to vehicular traffic between 7pm and 7am each night. An additional 34.29 percent want to see
an increase in pedestrianisation in town centre by extending the Main St arrangement that was in place during the summer. In that period the town’s main thoroughfare was closed to traffic, day and night, during the weekend. Only 20 percent of the respondents want to abolish pedestrianisation altogether, but that is still a significant number ensuring that this debate will linger on for a long time yet.
Kerry County Council is considering extending the Safe Streets Programme and the pedestrianisation of Plunkett Street?

Qi Gong helps locals relax and destress Locals got a chance to slow down and relax as they took part in a wellness event last Saturday. A group turned up Killarney House to practice Qi Gong as part of the Kerry Mental Health & Wellbeing Fest. It was lead by Noreen Tobin, who has just started a new business called Qi Gong Wellness and runs courses in Killarney, Killorglin and online. "Qi Gong is a slow moving exercise prac-
tice which integrates breathing with body exercise," Noreen said. "Its slow movements calm the mind and restore balance to the body." The practice is suitable for people of all ages and agility and offers people the tools to take care of their own mental and physical health, she added. "Thanks to Killarney House and Gardens and Killarney National Park for hosting the event in the courtyard."

Taste of Kerry at 'Flavours of Ireland' London event
Some 60 tourism companies from Ireland – including Randles Hotel group and Killarney Hotels – attended Flavours of Ireland 2021 in London, this week. ‘Flavours’ is Tourism Ireland’s annual B2B tourism workshop, where companies from Ireland meet and do business with top global inbound tour operators. Now in its 19th year, ‘Flavours’ – which took place virtually in 2020 – was an in-person event once again this year. It was held in the beautiful Guildhall, in the City of London, and was attended by around one hundred top global inbound tour operators who deliver business from all over the world, including the US, Mainland Europe, Asia, Australasia and Africa. This year, ‘Flavours’ is of particular importance, as overseas tourism restarts and the participating global inbound tour operators prepare to sign contracts for 2022 and 2023. It is, therefore, a key time for the participating tourism companies from Ireland to highlight and sell their product to these important decision-makers.
“Tourism Ireland is delighted that so many tourism organisations from Ireland and so many leading global inbound tour operators took the time to join us at our annual ‘Flavours of Ireland’ event – which was an in-person event once again this year," David Boyce, Tourism Ireland’s Head of Global Inbound and Emerging Markets, said. "Before COVID-19, these tour operators were responsible for delivering millions of bed-nights to Ireland. As overseas tourism restarts and the participating tour operators prepare to sign contracts for 2022 and 2023, we very much welcome the business and networking opportunities it presented. Our aim is to increase awareness of Ireland among these hugely influential global inbound tour operators and to help Ireland and our tourism partners secure a greater share of the huge worldwide tourism market.”
RELAXING: Participants in the Qi Gong class in Killarney House and Gardens last weekend had a chance to slow down and concentrate on their well-being.
Kissane third in national cycling championship Killarney cyclist Conor Kissane finished third in the Cycling Ireland Hill Climb National Championships on Sunday last. Organised by Gaeltacht Cycling Club, participants faced a tough 2.44 kilometre climb, near Moycullen, County Galway. Kissane finished third in a time of 4 minutes: 54.10 seconds, he was second in the same championship when it last ran in Castleisland in 2019. “Any other year I would be disappointed
with third but given the year we have had it is not so bad,” the Barleymount rider told the Killarney Advertiser. “It was short climb on quite a steep course.” The race was won by Joel Luke of UCD Cycling Club, taking the win on the narrowest of margins. Luke was less than one-tenth of a second quicker than Lindsay Watson (Powerhouse Sport) with a time of 4:48.62. Fellow Killarney Cycling Club member Ewan Buckley was 16th in the same race.
PODIUM: Killarney Cycling Club's Conor Kissane was third in the National Hillclimb Championship last weekend.

This week Minister for Finance Paschal Donohoe and Minister for Public Expenditure and Reform Michael McGrath delivered a €4.7bn package for Budget 2022. Michael Culloty and his team at Orchid Accountants have put together some key points from the announcement.
BUDGET 2022 SUMMARY
The overall theme of the 2022 budget was to assist in reducing the impact of the surge in living costs, assist the economy in recovering from the negative impacts COVID-19 had on so many people and businesses, and an attempt to combat the current housing crisis.
The changes can be summarised under 7 categories: • Weekly Rate Increases • Fuel Allowance • Pensioners and people who are unemployed • Families and Children • Carers and People with Disabilities • People in Work • Personal income tax and other noteworthy tax changes
WEEKLY RATE INCREASES
There was an increase to all core weekly
social welfare payments which was increased by the usual €5. There was a proportionate increase for qualified adults announced. The Living Alone Allowance has increased by €3 to €22 per week. Increase for a qualified child rate of payment for children 12 years or older, increased by €3 to €48 weekly. Increase for a qualified child rate of payment for children up to 12 years old, increased by €2 to €40 weekly.
FUEL ALLOWANCE
The Fuel Allowance is set to increase by €5 to €33 per week from 12 October 2021. The weekly income threshold for Fuel Allowance has increased by €20 to €120.
“A negative budget” – say car dealers One of the key issues announced in Tuesday’s budget is the increase of the Vehicle Registration Tax, a fee unique to Ireland across the entire EU. The cost of new cars will increase by between one and four percent from January 1. This increase comes on the back of a second-hand car market that has been decimated as a result of Brexit and COVID-19 impacts. David Randles, of Randles Bros Nissan on the Muckross Road, is the chair of the Kerry branch of the Society of the Irish Motor Industry (SIMI). He believes that the price increase will hurt new car sales, which will in turn effect the second hand car market and, by default, force a reduction in revenue for Government. “It was a negative budget for the motor industry,” he told the Killarney Advertiser. “I cannot see the reasoning for upping the price of new cars. The new

car market is on the floor, we can’t get second hands due to Brexit. We need to sell new cars to get the trade-ins, so less cars [being sold] means less revenue. We are facing a tough first six months of 2022.” The €5,000 relief for electric vehicles is being extended to the end of 2023. “We are not ready for that down here in country areas. It is getting better
[charging infrastructure] but in country areas we still need diesel,” added Mr Randles, whose family garage business is celebrating its 100th anniversary this year. “The motor industry is at a stage of reconfiguration. We will see a lot of changes in the way we do things over the next 10 years in terms of workshops and spare parts. Electric cars are a way better on brakes and tyres."

PENSIONERS & PEOPLE WHO ARE UNEMPLOYED
The weekly rate of all State pensions has increased by €5 . The Living Alone Allowance has increased to €22 weekly for people aged 66 years or over who are living alone. The Christmas bonus will be payable in December 2021 to people getting the majority of social welfare payments on a long-term basis.
FAMILIES AND CHILDREN
The Hot School Meals Programme is being extended from January 2022. The Parents Benefit for parents who take leave from work has increased by 2 weeks to 7 weeks for the parents of children who are born or adopted from July 2022. An extra 2 weeks payment has been announced for anyone who has a child under 2 years of age from July 2022. The Working Family Payment income threshold has increased by €10, regardless of family size. The Back to School Clothing and Footwear Allowance is set to increase by €10 for each qualifying child from July 2022. The income threshold to qualify for this allowance will increase to equal that of a two parent household.
CARERS AND PEOPLE WITH DISABILITIES
The wage subsidy paid to employers who employ people with a disability has increased by €1 to €6.30 per hour that is paid to the employer, effective January 2022.

The earnings limit on the current Disability Allowance will increase from €350 to €375. EmployAbility Service, which works towards getting people with disabilities into the workforce, will provide grants to people with disabilities in employment. The Domiciliary Care Allowance will now be paid for 6 months when children go into hospital. The Carer’s Allowance will continue to be paid for 6 months in respect of children who go into hospital. Capital/savings that the Carer's Allowance will disregard in assessing for the allowance is set to increase to €50,000 from January 2022. The weekly income that the Carers Al-
lowance will disregard in assessing for the allowance is set to increase to €350 for a single person carers and to €750 for carers with a spouse/partner.
PEOPLE IN WORK
The weekly income threshold for the working family payment has increased by €10, regardless of family size. The treatment benefit PRSI paid contributions minimum requirement reduces from 5 years (260 weeks) to 9 months (39 weeks) for people aged between 25 and 28 who are undergoing treatment. There was a grant announced for people undergoing chemotherapy or who have certain conditions. The grant is for €500.00 to assist with any cost of having to buy wigs/hairpieces. Many employment programmes and the Back to Work Enterprise Allowance have increased by €5 per week.

For a single person Tax band/cut off point has increased by €1,500 to €36,800 from €35,300. To put this into perspective, a person earning €36,800 will have an additional €300 in their pocket as a result of this increase. For a married couple/civil partners with one earner the tax band/cut off point has increased by €1,500. The net effect will be similar to a single person, in that there will be a €300 saving. Tax credits are set to increase. The per-
sonal tax credit is increasing to €1,700. The employee tax credit and earned income tax credit is set to increase to €1,700. No change to PRSI payable. However, an increase in the weekly income threshold for the higher rate of employer’s PRSI from €398 to €410. The 2% USC rate band ceiling is increasing by €608 from 1 Jan 2022. As mentioned above, the minimum wage is set to increase to €10.50 from €10.20. If you work from home/remotely, you will now be able to claim 30% of your vouched expenses for heat, electricity and broadband in respect of days spent working from home. The help to buy scheme is being extended to the end of 2022. The reduced 9% VAT rate currently applying to the hospitality sector is set to expire in August 2022. Pre-letting expenses have been extended to the end of 2024. A decrease in the farmers flat rate additions (VAT) from 5.6% to 5.5%. Excise duty on tobacco products is set to increase by 0.50c on a pack of 20 cigarettes with a pro-rate increase on other tobacco products. Budget 2022 a “big blow” to tourism industry | By Sean Moriarty This week’s budget is a “big blow” to the tourism industry according to Chair of the Kerry branch of the Irish Hotel Federation (IHF) Bernadette Randles. While she welcomed certain aspects of the budget, like the €90 million aviation package for Irish Airports she was left
dismayed that the VAT rate in the hospitality sector, which is currently set at 9 percent will return to 13.5 percent at end of next August. Ahead of the budget, hospitality sector officials were calling for this move to be delayed until 2025. The tourism industry nationally, is trying to recover from a €7 billion hammering caused by COVID-19 travel restrictions.
Ms Randles acknowledges that the aviation package will help attract new visitors but said that if the overall package remains too expensive the net result will be fewer visitors. “This is a big blow. We are in recovery and survival mode, we are already contracting for 2023 and if we have to turn around to these clients and say their rates have gone up again, well they
just may go elsewhere,” she told the Killarney Advertiser. “We are trying to recover, we are not whining, we are being very practical about this. It is not just hotels, but the entire tourism industry.” Additional cost increases facing the entire sector include fuel, coffee products and linen suppliers. Ms Randles confirmed that all of these industries have put up their prices in recent weeks.

Sandra McSweeney from Dromhall married Cormac O’Sullivan from Coolcorcoran at the Dromhall Hotel on Friday, September 17. Sandra is daughter of Noreen and the late Denis McSweeney, and Cormac is son of David and Mary O’Sullivan. And although sadly missed on the day, Sandra’s day was full of memories of her father Denis who passed away in 2009. She said “I do” to Cormac, who works in Liebherr, in a civil ceremony and held their reception afterwards in the hotel. It’s where her father worked for 35 years as Bar Manager in the function room. “We had a memory candle lighting for him,” Sandra told the Killarney Advertiser. “We decided to go with the Dromhall Hotel for our wedding because of the many memories.” The bridal party included Sandra’s sister Sinead McSweeney as Maid of Honour, and Cormac’s childhood friend John Coffey as Best Man. And the cute flowergirls, who did an amazing job scattering the petals going up the aisle on the day, were the couple’s two daughters Sadhbh (6) and Róisín (4). Local photographer Dylan Clifford brought them to Muckross Abbey for their wedding photos, a place that also holds a special place in the couple’s hearts. “We had our first date there,” Sandra, who works with Kerry Parents and
Friends said. Together nine years, they decided to tie the knot after getting engaged on New Year’s Eve 2016. She said they “got lucky” with their wedding date as they didn’t have to alter their plans due to the pandemic. One hundred were allowed attend and they even had live music. “We got so lucky with the music and numbers. We decided in February 2020 that we’d get married and set the date. We didn’t have to reschedule anything. It all worked out for the best.”

HEALTH & FITNESS Advice - By Brian Foley Brian is available for advice and fitness consultations, Call 087 403 0894 or email info@activate.ie • www.activate.ie
Can you talk your way to fitness? Recently, our team at Activate was talking about the regular check-ins we do with our clients. We try to sit down with each client in person at least once every six months, if not once a quarter, and see how they are doing. If we can’t get them to sit down with us, we’ll at least touch base via Zoom or phone. Text messages aren’t adequate to really understand how someone is doing and progressing as we help them towards their health goals, so we don’t count those. What’s interesting is how difficult it can be sometimes to track down and set up a time to catch up with clients. In passing, it’s simple, but those conversations aren’t as focused and usually don’t allow us to get into why someone is or is not seeing the progress they need. So many times it’s something we all know we need to do, but to sit down and have a real conversation with someone about how they are doing can be tough, or even intimidating depending on the situation. People start with us knowing we want to provide accountability, guidance, education, and motivation to help them accomplish their goals. But, when it comes down to the accountability portion, it can be difficult to want to talk about things that may not be going as planned. However, when we look back at our most successful clients - those who have accomplished or are accomplishing what they set out to do when they started with us - they are the ones who actually seek us out to sit down and get help. When we ask them about their goals or if they have time, they are excited to catch up and see what they can improve. Or, they are asking us to help even before we reach out to them. Those clients have not always had it easy either. Post lockdowns there were a lot of people re-orienting their schedule and lives and trying to make sense of what their goals needed to be. I personally had quite a few heavier conversations with people as we stepped through a plan to “reset” and get into a habit that fit their adjusted goals and schedules. Without those conversations, we may not have been able to help people as much as we are able to (thankfully).
ACCOUNTABILITY
For every area of your life; family, marriage, friendships, work; having accountability, a source of quality guidance, and motivation is as absolute must if you want to improve or progress. We can do some things alone, but we can do most of those things far better with others who have been there before or who can walk with us as we step through our journey towards our goals. If you are looking to improve at anything in life, be it professionally, or with your health and fitness, the first step is to acknowledge where you are and then seek out a trusted source of information to help you clarify and align the moving parts to ensure you can get to where you want in the timeframe you want. It’s why we start every member at Activate with a free consultation and why we continue to talk to our members. If we don’t know where you want to go, how can we help you get there? “Going to a gym” is fantastic and will be of huge benefit to your health, going to a gym that is invested in your journey multiplies this power exponentially. So, no, you can’t “talk your way to fitness”, it takes many hours of work and consistency, but starting your journey with a good honest talk and someone in “your corner” will ensure you start - and continue - in the right direction. To have a chat about your health and fitness goals, visit www.activate.ie and find out more.

A WEEKLY ROUND-UP OF NEWS • VIEWS FROM KERRY AND AROUND THE WORLD SUPPORT
KILLARNEY

Kerry Airport embraces new technology to cope with post-COVID travel Kerry Airport has teamed-up with a Killorglin company to be the world’s first airport to provide passengers with reliable information to track country entry requirements. By clicking on the Important Travel Documentation icon on www.KerryAirport. ie passengers will quickly find details of the testing, COVID-19 travel documents and quarantine requirements as well as the vaccine acceptance in destination countries. Kerry Airport currently services five Ryanair routes to London Luton, London Stansted, Manchester, Dublin, Faro and Alicante. “Kerry Airport, unlike other airports and indeed airlines, has experienced good volumes of passenger traffic since the restrictions were eased in July. This is a welcome development, however, one of the biggest disruptors to the recovery of the travel industry has been a lack of clearly communicated data within countries and between countries. We are proud to partner with SafeScore, a local company, to bring the latest COVID-19 information to our passengers,” said the CEO of Kerry Airport Ireland, John Mulhern. SafeScore, which is based in Killorglin’s RDI Hub, was founded in 2020 to solve the problems experienced by passengers when travelling the globe. The company’s solutions allows travel providers to reduce the strain on both themselves,

and their customers. “We are grateful to Kerry Airport for embracing our technology. We have all the data airports and airlines need to ensure smoother transitions, and improve the customer experience. Some of the important data points we include are, child PCR testing ages, locator form informa-
tion, specific vaccine requirements, and more. We are origin and destination-specific, so we tailor our data according to the routes required. Our database is a one-stop-shop for information on global travel restrictions and requirements,” added Nicholas Gorman, CEO and Lead Founder of SafeScore.
The men were travelling between islands in the Solomon Sea when their seven-metre boat became stranded in rough weather, 400 kilometres off the coast of Papua New Guinea. Livae Nanjikana and Junior Qoloni lost sight of land in the heavy rain, thick dark clouds and strong winds. For the first nine days they lived on oranges they had packed for the trip. When those ran out, Nanjikana said they survived on rainwater, coconuts their "faith in God". Collecting rainwater in a canvas bag, the pair would power up their engine whenever they came across a floating coconut, racing to pick it up. They then constructed a mast-like structure using paddles and canvas and set sail towards New Britain island in Papua New Guinea where they saw a fisherman in the distance. Starting the engine for one final push, they motored towards him but ran out of fuel. "It was then that we shouted and continually waved our hands to the fisherman that he saw us and paddled towards us," Nanjikana said.
Scientists believe there's a ninth planet! Scientists believe the solar system may have a ninth planet lurking somewhere beyond Neptune. It could be a mysterious Earth or Marssized planet that may have swirled beyond the asteroid belt among the gas giants before being swept to the far reaches of the solar system or even into deep space. The theory makes sense as Jupiter is known for being a bully. According to two researchers from the
Universities of British Columbia and Arizona, who studied various computer simulations depicting the evolution of the solar system, this is the case. Their findings were published in the Annual Review of Astronomy and Astrophysics earlier this month. In it, the scientists speculate that there's something missing in those models, like the fact that the solar system would have four gas giants in a row; Jupiter,
Saturn, Uranus, and Neptune, and then no other planets after that other than small, irregular dwarf planets like Pluto. "Logic suggests there should be some planets of other sizes, and their simulations back them up," Phys.org reports. "Adding another Earth or Mars-sized planet to the outer solar system, perhaps between two of the gas giants, produces a more accurate model at least during the early stages of development."

Healthy Heroes promote nutritious school lunches It’s a challenge that continuously faces parents of school-going children – how to create nutritious, easy-to-prepare school lunches five days a week that kids will love too.
Dublin area ranked amongst "world's coolest" A Dublin area has been named among the world's coolest neighbourhoods in a new poll by Time Out.
A panel of experts vetted the results and ranked the locations after the global media company surveyed 27,000 city dwellers about their lives. With a focus on "cool stuff, kind stuff and forward-looking stuff", Dublin 8 came 15th on the list, beating the likes of Ancoats in Manchester, Mount Pleasant in Vancouver and Dubai Marina in Dubai. Praising the area, which includes Kilmainham, Portobello and Phoenix Park, Time Out said Dublin 8 "captures the essence and charm of the Irish capital to a tee". "With much of the city being built up with cookie-cutter hotels and skyscrapers, this nook has retained much of its original architecture, but there have been plenty of positive changes in the past year too. Lucky's pub has been transformed into a
And although the school year is still young, some parents might already welcome a little help. Healthy Heroes, the popular lunchtime nutrition programme from the Irish Bread Bakers Association and Bord Bia, offers plenty of simple suggestions. Their latest programme is already underway in hundreds of primary schools around the country aiming to help children improve their eating habits for the better and increase their fitness levels. Studies show that just one in 10 Irish children (13%) meet the national physical activity guidelines, while at least one in five nationally are still overweight or obese. Created by teachers and behaviour change experts, with the support of Dr Mary McCreery, one of Ireland’s leading consultant nutritionists and dieticians, the schools-based lunchtime programme recognises the importance of intervening early so children develop
cultural hotspot with excellent rotating exhibitions, while Pearse Lyons Distillery is taking tours around its church distillery again. The neighbourhood brims with vintage and bric-à-brac shops, street art, markets, homey cafés, and it's also where you'll find some of the city's hottest foodie talent. Not to mention the Dublin Food Co-op, where locals can buy organic produce and educate themselves at sustainability workshops and other community events." Dublin 8 was the only Irish entry on this year's list which, as well as fun and entertainment, focussed on community spirit, resilience and sustainability in the wake of the pandemic. Nørrebro in Copenhagen topped the list, with Time Out describing it as "a dazzling blend of historic landmarks, ultramodern architecture and food and drink joints". Andersonville in Chicago and Jongno 3-ga in Seoul completed the top three.

healthy eating behaviours before they leave primary school. Almost 1,800 schools across the country have participated in the programme since it began eight years ago. It aims to increase the nutritional value of the lunch box with useful tips and suggestions on ways to include fruit and vegetables in lunch boxes as well as easy to understand information on the food pyramid and the contents of the ideal lunch box. The programme involves a novel peer learning approach with Sixth Class pupils mentoring younger children on the importance of nutrition and being active. This provides the younger children with important role models, while the older children have an opportunity to foster valuable leadership, teamwork, and communication skills. According to Dr McCreery, school lunchtime is an important opportunity to develop positive attitudes towards food choices and nutrition, leading to life-long eating habits. For more information on the programme and further recipes visit Irishbread.ie, or check out www.bordbia.ie for more tasty recipe ideas for your kid's lunchbox.
2021, funded by the Higher Education Authority of Ireland, will be running online, from 10am to 2pm, Saturday, November 6, offering a range of activities and amusements to suit all ages and interests. The workshops, hosted live in virtual au-
ditoriums include: Lightbot – Coding for beginners, Bubble – Build an App, Vex Robotics – Code a virtual robot, HTML – Code like a pro, Scratch – Create a story, Micro Bit – Code a micro-chip, Thunkable – Build an App, Blender – 3D modelling, and Soundtrap – Making music And

GARDENMAGIC
Gardening - By Debby Looney
Debby is available for advice and garden consultations, just call 086 6088156 or email barnhillky@gmail.com
Jobs to keep gardeners busy The weather is glorious at the moment, so I thought I would put together some jobs to keep every gardener busy! Winter bedding is now available – so plant up containers and pots to keep everything cheerful this winter! Conifers such as Goldcrest and Elwoodiis are an excellent choice for a centrepiece, as are Cordylines, Phormiums and topiary plants such as Buxus and Bay laurels. Heathers give colour all winter, as do ornamental cabbages. Winter pansies, violas and Batchelor’s buttons are all in stock now, and will provide colour for months, Cyclamen are beautiful – but beware! They do not like getting too wet, so ideally use them in pots and window boxes which do not get too much rain. Bulbs provide a welcome splash of colour in the early spring, at a time when things are looking grey and grim. Choose from an extensive range – tulips, daffs, crocus, snowdrops – to name but a few. Planting mixtures of different varieties can lead to stunning displays in a pot, for example, plant in layers: tulips at the bottom, then daffs, hyacinth, crocus and anenomes for a long lasting pot of colour. In the garden plant bulbs in informal clusters of uneven numbers to give a natural looking display. Alliums are particularly trendy at the moment, these ornamental onions are available in pinks, white and yellow.
PRUNING
Pruning is one of those jobs which can give immense satisfaction. All old flower heads, the straggly growth of herbaceous
plants and branches of unkempt shrubs can go into the compost heap. Pruning equipment can be confusing for the new gardener, so here are a few guidelines: there are two types of secateurs, bypass and anvil. The anvil secateurs is used for dead wood, but the bypass secateurs can be used for live as well as dead wood. The hedge shears are used to prune large shrubs or hedges, but is best for soft or thin growth. Loppers are used to prune trees and thicker branches and have long handles. These also come as anvil or bypass. Some of these are geared, these take the strain and strength needed out of the job, an excellent invention! As the days get shorter and wetter, moss will start to grow again. Treat paths before they get slippy, with a product such as MossOff. Try to keep fallen leaves off lawns as they contribute to poor growth of grass and strong moss growth. A leafblower makes the job easy – especially a cordless one! Lawns benefit from a final treatment in the autumn with a product such as an Autumn Lawn Feed and Weed or Viano Recovery from the producers of MO Bacter. These products both treat the roots of the grass, making the plant itself stronger for the winter. They do not cause excessive growth. Finally, if there are empty beds in your vegetable garden, consider sowing a green manure such as winter rye or red clover. These will prevent weeds from taking over as well as enriching the soil with nitrogen. In the spring they can be cut down and dug into the soil, providing essential organic matter.
MUSIC MAESTRO: DJ Cian Shiels is looking forward to his first gig back in almost two years.
DJ's relief to be back behind the decks | By Michelle Crean
It hasn't been the easiest 19 months for most industries - and for one local man it's pure relief to finally be getting behind the decks. DJ Cian Shiels, who runs Funktion Events is finally looking forward to his first gig back in almost two years. He has been booked to run his own event night at this year's K-FEST in Killorglin Saturday week next (October 23). At the K-FEST gig he will headline the show in O'Sheas Bar, Killorglin and will team up with Killarney's George Heelan, and Jonno Brien and Karl Seery from Tralee, for a night of techno and house music which is expected to last four and a half hours. It begins at 7pm and entry is free. "I've been out of work due to COVID-19, and this will be my first gig back in almost two years," Cian told the Killarney Adver-
tiser. "I'm nervous because it's so long since I did a gig. It's like starting all over again." Cian is no stranger in town as he helps set up the stages for gigs in the INEC and Europe Hotel. He was also working as backstage crew for the recent ANSEO gigs who hosted the first gigs for many singers and bands since the shutdown began. He set up Funktion Events in 2017 and past guest DJs included Rebuke from Letterkenny, Mark Reeve from Germany, Ejeca from Antrim and Harvey McKay from Glasgow. The shutdown happened so suddenly, but Cian thought he'd be back to business within weeks. "The last gig was set up in McSorleys but we didn't go ahead with it. I left the gear in there and said we'd run it in a week or two." It was months later before he collected the equipment. "It's great to be back working again," he said.

Kerry hotel first to install Tesla car super chargers Ballygarry Estate Hotel and Spa in Tralee is the first Irish hotel to have a Tesla Supercharging Station on site. After a collaboration with the world leaders in Electric Vehicles (EV’s), the management agreed a 10 year deal. The superchargers are the world’s fastest electric vehicle charging available, of which there are only five in Ireland. They can charge an EV to full battery in 45 minutes in comparison to a domestic charging facility which can take up to 12 hours. “This partnership aligns perfectly with
our values around sustainability and our shift towards Ballygarry Estate," Thys Vogels, Hotel Manager, said. "We are delighted to partner with Tesla and be a market leader with regard to EV charging. There is a quantum shift to EV’s and we are in the process of changing one full car park over to this. Tesla drivers align demographically with what Ballygarry has to offer. In addition to this we are already seeing the benefits with guests dining whilst charging as this new station which saw EV owners park their car and grab a quick bite of lunch before embarking on their next journey.”

REBUILD: Classic car enthusiasts Tom Leslie, Thomas Wharton, Mike Buckley and Jonathan Harig are restoring this Toyota Starlet in the relaunched Classic Shed. Photo: Grigoriy Geniyevskiy
New members welcome as Classic Shed relaunches Killarney Valley Classic and Vintage Club has relaunched its Classic Shed after being closed since the start of the pandemic. The club reopened its shed last night (Thursday) and is inviting classic car enthusiasts, or indeed anyone, who wants to start a new hobby to join them at their premises on the Lewis Road. The Classic Shed has been extensively renovated over the last few weeks and now includes a new heating system and
new lighting. Over the next few months the club, along with existing members and new recruits, will restore a 1982 Toyota Corolla. The car will be raffled off to raise funds for Kerry-based mental health charities. They also have plans in place to restore a Ford Dexta classic tractor in the months
ahead. “Our doors are wide open, everyone is welcome,” Killarney Valley Classic and Vintage Club’s Tom Leslie told the Killarney Advertiser. “The new lights were finished this week. This is for anyone, male or female, who might want a new hobby. They don’t need to be mechanics or anything, this is more about the social side of things and sometimes the cup of tea each night is
more important than the work we do.” The Classic Shed is a separate operation to the Men’s Shed that is already in place in the same yard. The Men’s Shed, which has already resumed post-pandemic, is aimed at people with an interest in wood crafting, gardening and other similar hobbies but both organisations offer the same social outlet for people looking for new friends or hobbies.

Over €535k support funding for MTU students Minster for Education and Kerry TD Norma Foley has welcomed the announcement of €238,144 in funding for MTU Kerry campus students through the Student Assistance Fund (SAF). A further €301,000 in funding will be made available in funding for student mental health services across the entire MTU campus. The SAF provides financial support to full or part-time students who are experiencing financial difficulties while attending college. “I welcome this funding which will benefit students in two key areas," Minster Foley said. "It will provide both financial assistance in addition enhanced to mental health and well-being supports. Students have endured an incredibly difficult 18 months due to COVID-19 and while they are now back on campus, some are still in need of particular support – in both a financial and a well-being sense.”

What is an Engineering Statutory Inspection? Equipment owners and managers can typically have a diverse, complex and large number of plant and equipment types under their direct control and/or supervision. With this comes the legal responsibility to ensure it is safe and that the necessary Health and Safety requirements are being satisfied. An Engineering policy will ensure that you satisfy the requirements of the Health, Safety & Welfare at Work legislation. Here is a brief outline of some of the most common plant and machinery that falls under this legislation. • Forklifts and teleporters should be inspected and certified every 12 months • Vehicle lifting tables should be inspect-
ed and certified every 12 months. • Lifting plant such as hoists and goods/ passenger lifts have an examination frequency of six months. Other machinery which are not lifting machines but have a lifting function, for example manual pallet trucks, excavators etc also require inspection under the health and safety acts. • Steam boilers, steam receivers and air receivers should be inspected and certified every 26 months. Hot water boilers and café boilers should be examined every 12 months.
As you can see there are many sectors that are impacted by this legislation from construction and manufacturing to the hospitality industry, agri sector and motor industry. It should be emphasised that if there is an accident involving an item of plant an up to date certificate will be requested by both the Health and Safety Authority (HSA) and the liability insurers. It is also vital to say that routine servicing of plant and machinery does not replace the legal requirement to hold up to date certification. There are a wider range of insurers and inspectors who offer this service. It is crucial to get the best possible professional advice as policy wordings and covers can differ greatly.

What to look out for when viewing second hand homes After spending so long saving for a mortgage and filling in countless application forms, you are now ready to begin your house hunting in earnest. Set yourself a budget and have a look to see what is available in your desired locations within that budget. Viewing appointments can be arranged via a telephone call or a simple email to the selling agent. When making the appointment make it clear that the mortgage is in place and you are ‘ready to go’. This week we will deal with viewing second hand homes and what to look out for on that first property viewing. When you arrive at a house, you’ll get a general feel outside of how well it’s been maintained. Arrive early and study the
exterior of the property before going in, and have a glance at neighbouring properties. This will help you to get your bearings before continuing with the viewing. If viewing an older house, a musty smell is the first red flag for signs of damp. Also be wary of the smell of fresh paint; was this done to simply freshen the property up or what is it covering up? Is paintwork bubbling or flaking? Take note of any wall cracking; hairline cracks in walls and ceilings are generally fine, but if you can spot a crack from the other side of the room, then it’s probably
big enough to be concerned about. In older houses, take a good look at windows and roofs. Window frames can slope downward if there are poor ground conditions underneath, and the roof of the house can sag in too. Is there room to extend? If you are lucky enough that there is have a look for external manhole covers; it gives a good indication of the drainage and pipe layout which may complicate a future extension. Don’t be afraid to ask the nosy questions; why is the house for sale? How long has it been on the market? How long have the current owners resided there? Has the house been rented out frequently? How many times has it changed hands

in the last decade? Have there been any refurbishments? Has it been rewired/ replumbed? Who are the neighbours? What is included in the selling price? It is a good idea to take photos (with the agent's consent) or videos as this will help you remember the property after you have returned home. And finally, don’t be afraid to ask for more time. Spend as much time as you think you need to and don’t hesitate to request a second viewing.

it's your birthday By Nicky Barry Gather up the COVID signs, and the COVID masks, And put them in a box somewhere, for when grandchildren ask, In years to come, what it was like in the great pandemic, Then you can show them all the gear, that came with the panic. In time to come, like London’s Blitz, it will be a memory, And you will have reminders, for all of them to see. It might help to write things down, like the big lockdown, When shops and pubs, and churches too, were closed in every town. The streets were all deserted, and people stayed inside, Watching TV nightly, of all the victims who had died. It hit the old folks hardest, especially those in nursing homes, Where they thought that they were safe, not being on their own. Two metres was the distance, that we all had to keep, In the supermarkets, or when passing on the street. Children couldn’t meet their grans, and hugging was forbidden, Friends just touched their elbows, instead of handshaking. Teenagers could not socialise, and were denied the shift, And only two folk at a time, were allowed into lifts. It really was a desperate time, but now it’s nearly over, Write it down, for history’s sake, for we are the survivors!

Take the stress out of a career change
Get a perfect fresh complexion in no time
People change career for a variety of reasons. For some people the desire to change comes from feeling unfulfilled or stressed in a current role or the need for more flexibility and autonomy as circumstances in your personal life evolve.
Beauty - By Jill O'Donoghue
We have been stockists for the ArtDeco make-up brand for the past 20 years. I absolutely love it as it is gentle on the skin and gives great coverage without blocking the pores. It's a professional make-up brand, easily hides redness and imperfections, giving even skin tone with perfect match foundation options. With an even complexion you will feel better about yourself, get the glow you have been dreaming about, and it'll bring out your features. We have primers to even the skin texture and balance high colour, perfect tint light reflecting concealer, and several foundations suitable for different skin types. To increase the staying power of your make-up we offer a selection of powders. If you're stuck using the same products for the past few years and need a change, book in for a make-up demo and customised colour selection. Concealer used correctly can make dark circles disappear. Our ArtDeco concealers will leave the skin looking refreshed when applied correctly. Apply the concealer under the eyes and to your t-zone to create some highlights. You can also apply it to blemishes. Brushes are a great investment when
trying to achieve a professional finished make-up look, plus, you use less product on the skin and can blend it in more evenly. You won't waste product on your hands which often ends up washing down the drain. Dab the concealer on to the face to make sure it's blended in smoothly. Go for a lighter colour that is slightly lighter than your own skin colour. My all-time favourite foundation is the ArtDeco High Definition Foundation in a wide range of colours, and there's one suitable for every skin tone. HD cameras pick up everything from wrinkles to pores. This foundation is infused with hyaluronic acid to supply moisture to the skin and extract from the Viola Tricolour plant, panthenol and vitamin A and E to nourish the skin. The foundation contains pigments created using HPP technology (High Performing Pigments). These are characterised by their excellent performance, ultimate intensity and special radiance. It helps make the skin appear smoother and minimises the pore size. The liquid gives medium coverage without giving a mask-like effect. To book an ArtDeco make-up colour match appointment or to find out more info call 064 6632966.
Other people are prompted to change because of ambition to develop professionally, the desire for more meaning or purpose, job security or to earn more money. Whether career change is forced upon you through organisational restructuring or is an active choice you are making, it can bring a mix of emotions. Among them is the fear and a lack of confidence on how to navigate the change effectively and the feeling of overwhelm associated with not knowing where to start. Conversely, it can be a time of great excitement about the possibility of taking on a new (and maybe very different) role or opportunity. Either way, drawing up a career action plan that breaks down the process into manageable tasks will help to ease any stress associated with career change and save you time and energy in the long run.
UNLOCKING YOUR POTENTIAL
Start by thinking about where you are now and where you would like to be – what are your priorities and non-negotiables and what are the practicalities you need to consider? To dig deeper do a self-assessment audit of your transferable skills and competencies, your career values and character strengths. Journal your career change journey by recording anything interesting you find out about yourself or career areas you are interested in. Some people like the idea of drawing up a career vision board as part of the process. Set clear goals and a specific timeline for yourself. As you gain more clarity, write out what your ideal job specification might look like, this will

guide your job search. Explore options to up-skill or retrain if you feel this is helpful or necessary. Do a spring clean of your CV so that it reflects you accurately and favourably. Reach out to people in your network who may be able to assist you as you navigate this transition. Think about possible side projects you could work on to explore different areas before taking a big leap. Set up or update your LinkedIn profile, it is an important part of career development. Practice interview skills, you want to be able to perform confidently when they come around. Think about this process as unlocking the potential of your ‘career brand’ so that you and prospective employers have a strong sense of who you are professionally, what you value and what you bring to the workplace. Doing this work will enable you to approach your job search and career change with renewed confidence. It will take some time but it will be worth it!

PRAYER TO ST. JOSEPH
O St. Joseph, whose protection is so great, so strong, so prompt before the throne of God, I place in you all my interest and desires. O St. Joseph, do assist me by your powerful intercession, and obtain for me from your divine Son all spiritual blessings, through Jesus Christ, our Lord. So that, having engaged here below your heavenly power, I may offer my thanksgiving and homage to the most loving of Fathers. O, St. Joseph, I never weary contemplating you, and Jesus asleep in our arms; I dare not approach while He reposes near your heart. Press Him in my name and kiss His fine head for me and ask Him to return the kiss when I draw my dying breath. St. Joseph, Patron of departing souls pray for me. This prayer was found in the fiftieth year of Our Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ. In 1505 it was sent from the Pope to Emperor Charles when he was going into battle. Who ever shall read this prayer or hear it or keep it about themselves, shall never die a sudden death, or be drowned, nor shall be burned in any fire or shall be overpowered in battle. Say for nine mornings for anything you desire. It has never been known to fail, so be sure you really want what you ask for. In thanks for request granted.
NOVENA TO ST. CLAIRE
Ask St. Claire for 3 favours, one business, two impossible and say nine Hail Mary’s for nine days with lighted candle. Pray whether you believe or not. Publish on ninth day. Powerful Novena. May the sacred heart of Jesus be praised, adored, glorified and loved today and every day throughout the whole world forever Amen. Say six times daily for nine days. Your request will be granted no matter how difficult it may seem. Favour publication must be promised.
In loving memory of our darling son Noel Michael (Mike) Gammell who died tragically on October 10th 1988 aged 9 years, R.I.P. “We did not see you close your eyes We did not see you die All we knew was that you were gone Without a last goodbye. I’ll lend you for a little while A child of mine god said For you to love him while he lives And mourn for when he is dead It may be six or seven years Or forty-two or three. But will you till I call him back. Take care of him for me.” Always loved and sadly missed by Mom, Dad, Chrissann, Elaine, Philip and Patrick and now the extended family Colin, Brian, Annmarie, Elaine, Eoin, Aisling, Alan, Stephen, Cian, Ailbhe, Niall, Conor, Robert, Finán, Daragh and Ciaran.

O’Sullivan enters race for Kerry GAA hot seat Crokes man aiming for second term as head of Kerry County Board
CANDIDATE: Former Kerry GAA chairman Patrick O'Sullivan has announced that he is putting his name forward for the role once again. Pic: Ray McManus/ Sportsfile.
Experienced administrator Patrick O’Sullivan from the Dr Crokes club has announced that he hopes to replace outgoing Kerry GAA chairman Tim Murphy at the upcoming County Convention. O’Sullivan, who previously held the role between 2012 and 2016, is set to challenge current vice-chairman Eamon Whelan of St Senan’s for Murphy’s seat. Brosna native Murphy will be standing aside at December’s Convention as he has served his term of five years, the maximum length of time permissible under official GAA guidelines. The Bag (as O’Sullivan is affectionately known) has sampled success as Kerry GAA chair in the past; he oversaw the appointment of Eamonn Fitzmaurice as senior football manager in 2012 and two years later Kerry won the All-Ireland with O’Sullivan’s clubmates Fionn Fitzgerald and Kieran O’Leary lifting the trophy. That 2014 triumph under the Killarney man’s watch is the only one The Kingdom have managed in the past 12 years.
ENERGY
“I’ve the energy for it and I think I have something to offer, otherwise I wouldn’t be putting my name forward,” O’Sullivan said as he announced his candidacy in an interview with John Fogarty of the Irish Examiner. “There are a couple of things that I started and didn’t get finished the last time and I’m hoping to achieve that this time around if I am successful.
“I was always actively involved in the GAA and it’s something my father instilled in us when we were living in America. It was a big thing of his and our lives when we lived there and it became a big thing for us when we moved home. “When you enter a race like this, some people mightn’t want you and some might feel you had your turn and now it’s somebody else’s turn. That’s a fair enough opinion but I wouldn’t be going again if I didn’t think I had something to bring to the table.” O’Sullivan also revealed that he sought counsel from a number of former officials before arriving at his decision to once again run for the chair. “I’ve spoken to a lot of past officers and their first reaction was ‘do you need to do it again?’ But when I’ve explained why I want to get involved again they have said that I should put my name forward.” The 54-year-old proprietor of the popular Tatler Jack bar on Plunkett Street has a wealth of experience in GAA administration that stretches back to 1998. Most recently he served as chairman of Dr Crokes for three years before handing the reins to Matt O’Neill at the beginning of 2021. He is also currently overseeing Kerry GAA’s ambitious ‘Win a House’ competition. Patrick is the son of former All-Ireland winning Kerry selector Eddie ‘Tatler’ O’Sullivan. His brother, Edmund, is the current manager of the Crokes senior football team.
O’Sullivan is set to challenge current vice-chairman Eamon Whelan of St Senan’s for the role.

Big weekend ahead in Club Championships • Kenmare and Stacks set for Fitzgerald Stadium showdown • Rathmore take on Beaufort in intermediate semi-final • Times and venues confirmed for first round of Kerry SFC A tantalising 48 hours of club football lies ahead with key semi-finals or finals taking place at every grade of the Kerry Club Championship. There are several exciting fixtures taking place across the county but the keenly anticipated senior final between Kenmare Shamrocks and Austin Stacks is surely the headliner. Both finalists looked impressive throughout the group phase with Stacks in particular showing their strength by claiming victory in all three of their games. Legion, Rahilly’s and Dingle all fell to the men from Connolly Park and three late goals propelled them past Templenoe in the semi-final. That last four encounter was not of the highest calibre (the scoreline at halftime read Stacks 0-4 Templenoe 0-2), but the Tralee club came good in the second period to secure their progression to the finale. Kenmare, meanwhile, topped a pool containing Dr Crokes, Spa and Tem-
plenoe and yet another Seán O’Shea winner sealed a one-point victory over Dingle in the semi-final. Remarkably, O’Shea has now scored a late winner in four of Shamrocks’ last six Club Championship victories across this and last season. The fact that Kenmare and Stacks also met in the 2020 decider adds a significant amount of spice to Sunday’s clash. Stacks won last year’s game after extra time, and they are likely to be slight favourites this time around, but Kenmare will fancy their chances of causing an upset. If they manage to get over the line it will cap an incredible 10year period for the club during which time they have also won the Junior Club Championship (2012) and the Intermediate Club Championship (2016).
INTERMEDIATE
Things are taking shape in the intermediate too as 16 clubs have now become four. Rathmore, who lost their senior status in 2019 after 20 years at the top
table, are one step closer to promotion following a solid win over neighbours Glenflesk. Mark Reen (1-6, 5f), Chrissy Spiers (0-4, 2f) and Paul Murphy (0-3) accounted for the bulk of Rathmore’s scores as they ran out 1-18 to 1-11 winners. Aidan O’Mahony once again lined out in the full forward line and he chipped in with a point from play. Rathmore’s opponents in the semis will be beaten 2020 finalists Beaufort after they inflicted a heavy defeat upon Kilcummin in Kilcummin. Liam Carey kicked 1-8 and Kieran Dennehy added 1-3 for the Mid Kerry side as they romped to a 2-21 to 0-10 victory. Coming so close to promotion just a matter of weeks ago before falling short (the 2020 edition didn’t finish until September) apparently hasn’t knocked Beaufort too far off their stride. The other semi-final will see Na Gaeil take on Castleisland Desmonds after they accounted for Ballydonoghue and An Ghaeltacht in their respective last eight ties.
JUNIOR
In the Junior Premier, Listry are on the brink of the final following their excellent 1-15 to 2-6 win over local rivals
Fossa. The East Kerry club will take on Skellig Rangers on Sunday with Gneeveguilla up against St Michael’s-Foilmore in the other semi-final. At Junior level, Firies will be hoping to move one step closer to promotion when they take on Reenard in Killorglin on Saturday. The winners will go up against either Cordal or Castlegregory in the final. In the Novice Club Championship, Sneem/Derrynane play Ballylongford with Cromane up against either Asdee or Moyvane.
KERRY SFC
Meanwhile, the times and venues for Round 1 of the County Championship have been confirmed. In one of the ties of the round, Killarney rivals Legion and Spa will face off in the Fitzgerald Stadium on Saturday, October 30 at 3pm. Later that evening at 7pm, defending champions East Kerry will take on Austin Stacks in Austin Stack Park. Dr Crokes will get their championship underway against West Kerry the following day at 3pm. That match will form part of a double-header in Stack Park with Dingle and Mid Kerry squaring off at 5pm.

Fixing the tackle, binning the bin and cutting the numbers… Former Kerry goalkeeper Eamonn Fitzgerald puts forward a number of measures that he feels would rejuvenate Gaelic football In recent weeks most of the discussion on Kerry football has centred on the appointment of Jack O’Connor as manager of the Kerry senior football team. The Sam Maguire hasn’t returned to Kerry since locals Kieran O’Leary and Fionn Fitzgerald lifted the Holy Grail in 2014. The domination of the Dubs with the six-in–a row and the disappointments of the past three years, when Peter Keane was very unlucky not to manage Kerry to victory, has led to a deeper frustration among the Kerry supporters. Some followers of football are losing interest in the game as it is played today. Some say they don’t bother going to games anymore, because the style of football has deteriorated into a mixture of basketball and athletics. The romanticised recollections of the high-fielding of Mick O’Connell and the marking your own man, thou shalt not pass type of football is largely gone. Joe Keohane, Teddy O’Connor, Paddy Bawn, Paudie O’Shea and a host of others made sure that the opposition’s attackers never got a chance to have an unchallenged shot at the goalkeeper. Zonal defence, how are you?
THE TACKLE
Mick O’Dwyer always said that there is no really clearly defined tackle in Gaelic football, and I agree fully with him. He saw it from three sides: as a defender, attacker and manager. I talked to him many times about this. There are three basic types of tackle in Gaelic football: (a) the side tackle, the most common one, (b) the front tackle, (c) the tackle from behind. The referee is the sole judge and has to decide if it is a free in or a free out. Types (b) and (c) don’t pose any real difficulties in decision making. Both are fouls. But a shoulder to shoulder is allowable. However, if a player gets a fair shoulder and falls to the ground, invariably the referee favours the fallen one. One Kerry football defender of the past perfected the ideal ruse. When he was

slowing up in his latter days with Kerry and he faced a jinking speedster, he ushered him out towards the sideline, gave his customary right belt of a shoulder, and then assisted the forward with a helping hand to ensure he stayed on his feet. Free out. Over-playing the ball. The rule regarding tackling states that you must use one hand and one hand only, but the problem is: what does a defender actually do with that one hand, as opposed to what he is allowed do. Tackling in Gaelic Football is confined to tackling the ball. It is illegal to trip, punch, hold, drag, pull or rugby tackle another player. For defenders all you can do safely without conceding a free in is to shadow the opponent with both arms outstretched, doing a sprightly dance like David Rea’s Riverdance, hoping you can entice/force the forward out to the sideline where he is least likely to score. Two hands draw the foul. Of course, some defenders play to the optics using the one hand
and raising up the other hand so that the ref thinks he is not fouling. What is the defender doing with that hand? Playing the ball trying to punch it out from the attacker? If that hand delivers a punch to the solar plexus, so be it, as the referee is usually unsighted. Or, as happens too often in club games, the referee is not up with the game and cannot see what is really happening. As he makes his way to the scene, I believe that he is unduly influenced by the roar of the crowd. “Free in, ref!”. Thank you very much says Seánie O’Shea and Dean Rock. Rugby is very clear-cut when it come to the defined tackle and to some extent in soccer, where the sliding tackle is not acceptable. While there is some credence in the perception of these disillusioned football followers, who long for the Kerry football style of the good old days, I don’t see it through the same rose-tinted glasses. Too often in the past the hard man was lauded for his physical prowess and not
for his skills. I can see the merit of the modern possession game, but not endless lateral hand-passing, the fulcrum for launching a successful game strategy, which was one good reason why Dublin won six-in-a-row. They were also a g reat team. You’re a loser all the way with Dean Rock and Seánie O’Shea delivering almost 100%. Take a recent game as an example. Seánie kicked 15 points versus Dr Crokes and 14 of those were frees, from any distance from 45 metres inwards. The winning score was 17 points. So a reliable free-taker is essential on any team. He repeated the performance on Sunday last by scoring 11 points to squeeze past Dingle. The scoring in football games nowadays is very high and even more so in hurling.
PITY THE REFEREE
I have great sympathy for the referee in football and have never commented on the performance of the referees in
65
15.10.2019 these pages, unless I attended the game. Second-hand accounts are biased, unreliable and unacceptable. When I attend games in person, I comment on the performance of the referee, but never personalise these comments. It is a judgement on performance not on the referee as a person. Quite simply, I respect referees. I believe they have an impossible job. It’s tough enough at intercounty level but pity the ref in some local game where he does not have neutral umpires or linesmen. The ref should apply the rules, but also apply common sense, knowing the difference between a deliberate intentional foul and body contact where the player is playing the ball, not the man. No free or card for such, even if the player falls to the ground. The modern game has evolved and there is much to recommend it, but I believe that it can be made much more enjoyable for players and spectators by making necessary changes
IMPROVEMENTS
Some of the he rules are not clear-cut, particularly the tackle. Rid the game of the mark. The idea was that it would reward high-fielding, a wonderful but fast–fading feature of the game. It has not done that, particularly
around the middle of the park. Midfield is often bypassed today and worst of all a mark is allowed for a player near goal, who manages to catch a low ball stumbling to the ground and raises his hand within a few seconds to signal his achievement. Did he, or did he not, raise his hand? Invariably the referee awards the mark and a simple tap over for a certain point, which may be the winning score. Learn from the women’s game. The LGFA has got it right with the clock (in major venues) taking the timing of games away from the referees. The same happens in basketball. The clock stops when there is a hold up in play. Then there are no grounds for dispute. I have seen too many games where the referee played too much overtime, or too little, and the winning scores came during the extended time. Recently I witnessed 13 minutes added on by a referee. There is a lot of stoppage time in 13 minutes. Spectators have watches and stopwatches/timers on their phones, so then the arguments commence. That time added on is at the discretion of the referee. He has too much to do already and more advisory discretion should be given to umpires and linesmen. In the absence of a clock, let the other officials
bear that responsibility. Get rid of the water-breaks too. Too often they influence the flow of the play. Pardon the pun, but too often they also change the run of play.
13-A-SIDE
I would love to see the teams reduced to 13 players. Take out the full back and the full forward, create more space and set the scene for more open football. I have seen it used very successfully at colleges level and it is a joy to watch. Also, it would help rural clubs in particular, who are hard pressed to have 15 players available due to depopulation and other factors. It would help clubs to field their own team instead of being forced to join up with their neighbouring parish, probably their greatest rivals for many years. Amalgamations are undesirable, but often necessary. I think of South Kerry clubs in particular. There is an argument to get rid of all referees’ cards, red, yellow and black. For a start dump the black card. As it is, some players feign injuries, waste time and run down the clock. The 10-minute penalty and 14 players effectively means the sinbinned player returns after seven, six or dare I say five minutes. The timekeeper is the ref. He is not God almighty and he has enough to do.
The modern game of football has plenty going for it, but there are responsibilities on the GAA authorities, the referees, the managers and the players to improve the enjoyment of the game. Ditto for the spectators, the hurlers on the ditch, or in this case the footballers on the terraces. Too many are not conversant with the new rules. It is hard to blame them; there has been too much tricking around with the rules governing football that it can be hard to know the updated position. That situation with local club rivalry and natural bias leads to misinterpretation and misrepresentation of the facts and rules that leads to difference of opinions, to put it very mildly. Pity the poor ref having to make instant decisions, de facto on his own. Video analysis is not confined just to The Sunday Game. Many club games are also filmed. The ref can’t win. Who would want to be a referee? Certainly not for the money – a very modest €40 for a local senior game. Is it a just reward for running the gauntlet of some players, or a few officials who spend half their time encroaching onto the pitch, and the tirade of abuse from spectators, usually personal, misguided and unwarranted? Who’s reffing the game on Sunday next?

Lakers and Cougars take positives from defeats No points on the board but plenty of plus points for Killarney clubs Killarney’s two Men’s National League teams suffered opening round defeats last weekend but both sides can take plenty of positives from their first outings of the 2020/2021 season. The Scotts Lakers had a tricky first day at the office as they travelled to Limerick to take on the Celtics. Thanks in part to the offensive prowess of newcomers Emilian Grudov, Rui Saravia and Ben Miller and the defensive efforts of local lads Mark O’Shea and Paul Clarke, the visitors appeared to be in control of proceedings heading into the fourth quarter. Jarlath Lee’s team led by 86 points to 79 and a valuable road win was on the cards. Credit to the hosts, however, who put together a remarkable 18-0 run to completely turn the game on its head. With Andre Wolford (who finished with 51 points) to the fore, the Celtics seized control and although the Lakers fought back

admirably, they just about came up short. The final score at Munchin’s College was Limerick Celtics 111-104 Scotts Lakers. Encouragingly, the Lakers’ imports all made an impression on the scoring charts with Grudov (31 points), Miller (30) and Saravia (12) combining for 70% of the team’s points total. Youngster Jamie O’Sullivan also made his mark by chipping in with an impressive tally of 18. Next up for the Lakers is another away match, this time in Cork against Fr Mathews. Tip-off on Saturday is at 7.30pm. In cup news, the Lakers have been drawn to play the Portlaoise Panthers at home over the October Bank Holiday weekend (October 23/24). This will be the team’s first home game of the season. Lakers fans can now buy their season tickets with a ‘single’ costing €50. A ‘patron’ option (two adults) is available for €100, which includes a mention in
the gameday programmes. The ‘family’ season ticket (two adults and two under 16s) is €120. This entitles fans to entry to every home league and cup game. Visit the St Paul’s Killarney Facebook page for details on how you can get your hands on these tickets through Eventbrite. Alternatively, you can contact any club officer.
COUGARS
In what was their first ever game in the National League, newcomers Killarney Cougars came up against a strong UCC Demons outfit in the Pres Gym. The Cougars started well and threes by Conor Flynn and Con O’Mahony contributed to an early 14-11 lead. The Demons have been tipped as title contenders, however, and they showed their considerable class thereafter, with Tala Fam Thiam in particular standing out. The away team led by 45-30 at the half but a strong third quarter which included
threes by Flynn, Justin Tuason and Mark O’Shea helped cut the deficit to just five. But Demons regrouped and reassumed control thereafter, eventually running out 87-59 winners. Next weekend the Cougars travel to Limerick to tackle the UL Eagles with a home game against the Portlaoise Panthers on October 23.
ST MARY’S
Team Garvey’s St Mary’s (Castleisland) were no match for hosts Glanmire when the sides met in the first round of the Women’s Super League on Friday last. It was always expected to be a tough challenge for the visitors considering Glanmire’s many years of experience at this level and the Cork women had a huge first quarter, hitting 28 points to Team Garvey’s 13. Team Garvey’s Le’Jzea Davidson sustained an ankle injury in the early part of the game but to her credit managed to keep going. However, she went over on the same ankle in the dying stages. Glanmire continued to excel as the game progressed leaving the final score at 11241 in favour of the Cork team. Killarney native Rheanne O’Shea chipped in with six points for St Mary’s. The Kerry team’s next game is on Saturday against Fr Mathews. Tip-off in Castleisland Community Centre is at 6.30pm.

Coyne back on home soil
Local motorcycle racer Kevin Coyne returned to Mondello Park for the first time since 2019 last weekend. The Kawasaki rider has been racing in England for the last two seasons but decided to enter the final round of the Dunlop Masters Irish Superbike Championship at the last minute. He had mixed results. He finished third in his first Supersport Cup race, crashed
out of his second race, and took fourth in the third and final race of the meeting. | O’Sullivan leads British
Championship
Noel O’Sullivan has extended his lead in the co-driver section of the British Rally Championship after taking second place in last weekend’s Mull Rally in Scotland. O’Sullivan and his driver Osian Pryce finished second on the legendary event.
Just two events remain: the Cambrian Rally at the end of this month and the Ulster International Rally in mid-November. | Siobhán ‘privileged’
to ride in F2 sidecar
Killarney sidecar racer Siobhan Ardener raced on a Formula 2 Sidecar in Mondello Park over the weekend. The sight of an F2 machine is rare at the County Kildare track; the smaller sidecars are built
for road races while the bigger F1 machines are more suited to circuit racing. Ardener has ambitions to contest the Isle of Man TT as a sidecar passenger. She made her F2 debut alongside Paul Reck on a MD Racing machine last weekend as part of a long-term plan to realise that ambition. “It is a wicked little bike,” she said. “I am very privileged to get a spin on it, it’s actually been used over on the Isle of Man.”

which they took with them into interval break. From the start of the second period Ballyhar began to pile the pressure on the Galaxy goal. Some resolute defending kept the home team out. Eventually the hosts got back on level terms 1-1 the score. This however only seemed to spark the visitors into life. With 10 minutes to play Shea Driver conjured up a moment of pure magic. He showed fantastic control and unleashed an unstoppable shot on the turn. 1-2 the score and that is the way it finished. The Galaxy were bravely represented on the day by Ryan van Den Merwe, Rian O’Connor, Gerry Moroney, Joe Stephens, Charlie O’Meara, Ross Cronin, Shea Driver, Rian Wheldon, Dara McCarthy, Matthew Lucey, Roan Clifford.
