NEWS

Editor’s View

15.09.17 Eve Kelliher takes a look at the news that’s been getting Killarney and Kerry talking

Ransoming The Crown Jewels Could former Pretty Polly site become a trade the hub like the NEC, Birmingham? NEC, Birmingham: Factfile, 20 exhibition halls, 34 conference suites, 6 million guests a year, 500 events hosted each year.

TRADITIONALLY, Killarney resisted the idea of industry for cosmetic reasons. It’s not that long ago that for many it brought to mind the image of Dickensian chimneys bellowing out smoke – flinging a murky pall over our picture-perfect streets and obscuring our panoramic mountain views. But today industry equates to high-salaried, corporate employment. Last week we put it out there that the former Pretty Polly site in Killarney should get a vibrant new lease of life. Our idea for creating a financial hub to rival those in London and Dublin certainly got people talking and one businessman contacted us with the suggestion that the site would make the perfect location for a major trade fair centre. We’re talking a town-within-a-town

here, a multi-hall event centre to compare with the likes of the major trade exhibition hubs in Birmingham and Dusseldorf. Killarney has the requisite networks and the infrastructure as well as world-class hotel accommodation, so why can’t we do that? The problem is our thinking has traditionally been on a short-term basis – and we all know big companies don’t think in the short-term. Tax and funding incentives need to be looking to the long-term, not operating with an eye to a couple of years down the road. Two decades ago the Rosenbluth International call centre chose an out-oftown location in preference to something close to the town centre. Let’s not lose out again.

New Lease Of Life For Mustang Sally’s THERE was the end of an era and talk of the beginning of another in Killarney’s nightlife scene in the past week. Mustang Sally’s ceased trading last week under the O’Connor family, who posted a message on the venue’s Facebook page thanking staff, customers and friends for their support. The Main Street business opened almost three decades ago. It is believed the lease for the popular venue is to be acquired by a Killarney businessman with interests in the pub trade.

Why can’t we do this? We also need to become a industrial-minded town like never before to realise such dreams. There was always the idea that Killarney wanted to protect itself as a jewel in the tourism crown. But would we ransom

that jewel for the sake of industry? It’s not so black and white a question these days. And a high-powered industry event and trade centre would sit well with that idea.

Meeting

Charity Begins At Home? THE Cathaoirleach and Chief Executive of Kerry County Council are to seek a meeting with District Court Judge James O’Connor in relation to the court poor box. Last year, districts courts in Kerry recorded the highest amount of court poor box donations in the country. The court poor box mainly used for offences which would not attract a custodial sentence. There were just over €394,000 in donations in the seven district courts in the county in 2016 and Judge James

O’Connor determines where this money is allocated with the vast majority given to overseas charities. Cllr Niall Kelleher raised the issue at the monthly council meeting, suggesting the monies collected could be allocated to the Community Support Fund for community organisations across Kerry. He stressed he was not against developing world charities but asked if the courts service could be encouraged to ensure majority of the money be allocated to charities in Kerry.

We Turn Spotlight On Killarney’s Liberace & INEC’s Fiona

SO WHERE does Killarney’s Liberace source his headturningly fabulous jackets? We learned this and much, much more when we hosted two leading lights of Killarney’s entertainment industry in our Chatroom this week. Aishling O’Hanlon got the cameras rolling as Jack Patrick Healy and the INEC entertainment manager, Fiona O’Connor, settled down with a cuppa on the couch to learn a few home truths about one another.

Jack, who is resident pianist and singer in the Liquid Lounge and has fans across Ireland and the globe, and Fiona, who steers one of Ireland’s most iconic entertainment venues, were fantastic guests and their answers to the fun questions were comedy gold. Check out the video on www.killarneyadvertiser.ie and on our Facebook page to see the fun that was had.

Freshest Musical Talent In Killarney SPOTLIGHT is the title of an intimate gig featuring the freshest Irish musical talent on the airwaves today. Starring Sample Answer, Overhead - The Albatross, Dáithí and Kormac, it will be staged on Sunday, October 29, in the INEC Acoustic Club. It builds on the success of Future Sounds in February and sees Spin South West and the INEC Killarney showcase talented homegrown musicians already making waves on the Irish and UK music scene. Kick-starting with Sample Answer, the London-based Dublin born singer-songwriter is coming up trumps with his music and turning heads in the last two years. His debut EP Good Boy was released in July 2015 reaching over 500,000 streams online. Solution For Danger Junction?

A REPORT on a potential solution to boost safety at what is regarded as one of Ireland’s most dangerous junctions is to be completed by next month, it was confirmed this week. Earlier this year, we campaigned for a safe solution to the crux in a three-part series in these pages on the Lewis Road/Killarney bypass road junction. The area has been the site of a fatal accident this year as well as numerous collisions. Kerry County council is to offer a possible solution to Transport Infrastructure Ireland. Councillor Brendan Cronin requested clarification on progress as to improvements to the junction at the meeting of Kerry

Fundraiser

County Council on Monday, describing the junction as “lethal”. Council CEO Moira Murrell and a director of operations met with TII in June about the issue. At this meeting, TII requested that the council prepare a feasibility report on the existing junctions. “The report has now been submitted to TII, which has clarified that traffic volumes on the route is nearing capacity, which the council considers justifies intervention,” stated the council. A further report on potential solutions is being prepared and will be issued to TII in late September/early October.

Who Will Be Crowned Jungle King or Queen? GETTING up close and personal with a whole host of critters is the challenge faced by 12 local personalities as a unique “I’m a Celeb…Get Me Out of Here!” challenge unfolds in Killarney next month. The Stephen Lyne Foundation and Kerry Stars Special Olympics Club will stage the fundraiser on October 26, in conjunction with event sponsor Kerry Drain Services.

Sergeant Mark O’Sullivan, Supt Flor Murphy and Detective Sgt John Kelly of Killarney Garda Station recently attended the local prayer house at Beech Road on the invitation of representatives of the local Muslim community.

Twelve brave men and women are ready to hit the jungle for a series of “bush tucker” trials – Michael Healy Rae, TD, Brendan Fuller, Sean Taaffe, Rory D’Arcy, Sean Coffey, Emma Philips, Mags Harty, Ruth Allen, Gavin O’Leary, Enda Walshe, Mary Brosnan and Brendan Kealy. The Stephen Lyne Foundation was set up with the vision of teaching children the importance of empathy.

The Kerry Stars Special Olympics Club was formed in September 2002 by a group of local families.

Two Rescued After Becoming Lost In Rhododendron In National Park TWO people were rescued yesterday in Killarney National Park after becoming lost in rhododendron. The pair raised the alarm at 2pm and teams from Kerry Mountain Rescue, Killarney Water Rescue went to the area. The Shannon Coast Guard Helicopter was tasked to the scene by Valentia Coastguard, with rescue services pinpointing the location by pinging their mobile phones. The people used a tent as a marker for the helicopter but the rhododendron was too thick for the winchman to reach them. The pair were told to make their way to the shoreline at the Meeting of the Waters where they were picked up by a boat at around 4pm. In January of this year, Killarney Advertiser campaigned on the rhododendron threat to Killarney National Park and called for a solution to the problem.

Junior Cert Results

Smiles of Relief

ALMOST 1,900 Kerry students received the results of their Junior Certificate exam on Wednesday. Having embarked on the new English Junior Cycle curriculum, teachers in Killarney were pleased to see the majority of students achieving distinctions and higher merits in this new syllabus. “This is a landmark day for students in

Killarney Community College as English is the first subject awarded new grade descriptors in Junior Certificate results,” said Kerri McCarthy of the college. Karen O’Donoghue, Killarney Community College, achieved an impressive eight Higher Level As in her subjects and a Higher Merit in English.

Opinion

‘Exams Aren’t Everything in Life’ Her Junior Certificate experience is one Aishling O’Hanlon will remember for a long time to come AT THE beginning of third year, my grandmother died after a short battle with cancer. I remember clearly to this day getting off the school bus and my mother telling me the sad news. They say that the first major loss in your life is the hardest and when my grandmother passed away, I was heartbroken because we were great friends. Throughout the rest of that year and the following year, it was all study and more study. Three weeks before my exams started, I ended up in the hospital. It was my brother’s Communion day and I wasn’t feeling great, I had no appetite and no energy. The next morning my mother brought me to the hospital and I

woke up over 24 hours later surrounded by nurses and machines beeping. I was told by doctors that I had been in a diabetic coma because of high blood sugars. I spent two weeks in hospital, studying to ease the boredom. I got out of hospital a few days before my exams began – the fun part was the last-minute cramming sessions, especially for Maths and English poetry. On results day, I was a nervous wreck. I passed with flying colours but now I look back on that day and think to myself, “Why was I so nervous that day because that exam was never going to be as important as the Leaving Certificate and exams aren’t everything in life.”

Views On The News Anne Lucey gives her take on happenings in Killarney, Kerry and beyond in her monthly column

Time For Killarney To Get A Slice Of The Action

WHEN you go to the municipal meeting in Tralee there is chocolate cream cake – Killarney makes do with a handful of biscuits. This might seem “trifling” but the difference is symbolic: Tralee, it seems, is getting its cake and eating it. Perhaps it is a co-incidence that the attention lavished on Tralee seems to have grown since the demise of the town councils and the €14 million or so of Killarney rates going into the capital. There is a gobsmacking, finger-licking amount of attention – followed by money – being paid to the capital town, by the now single local authority that is Kerry County Council. And although it doesn’t seem to be paying dividends – the county town was one of the worst littered areas, alongside the most deprived inner city areas in Cork, Limerick and Dublin – there is no stinting in the attention by our local authority including work and staff dedicated to improving Tralee. Take a few examples: Mitchels Crescent, the old bullring area, has been massively transformed, beautifully so, by the council in partnership with other agencies. Denny Street and the Mall have been transformed and there is now consultancy to begin on pedestrianisation, it was announced last week. Monuments have been erected and viewing points are to be done up, and a number of Tralee’s tourism projects have long been directly funded by the council, the latest incarnation being the Tralee Wetlands. In addition there is a major council push

to get people back living in the town centre. In contrast, Killarney has had a bit of controversial paving in the shortest street in the town that is Plunkett Street as well as the area around the courthouses and a bit of painting to the town hall. The engine in the traffic study doesn’t seem to have been ignited yet and traffic has never been worse. But the 150 or so-page consultants report on the Aras Phádraig is one that intrigues me more. Did we really need a consult-

ants report to tell us we need a 300-seat small theatre? Thirty years ago in the Killarney Arts CoOp, the need for a theatre with the sale of the magnificent old town hall ballroom was glaringly obvious. The town council was not much help here – for decades it had dozens of yawning council subcommittees – and no theatre resulted. Meanwhile countywide, there is no embarrassment about riding on the coattails of Killarney’s hard-earned two and a

Upstairs Downstairs

STILL with tourism, a decision will be made on Monday if it is to be upstairs downstairs after all in Muckross House. The house, which since 1964 has provided the public with a glimpse into the refined lives of the landed gentry, is seeking to turn its attention downstairs, to the lives of the servants. An application by the Department of Arts, Heritage, Regional, Rural and Gaeltacht Affairs to carry out major works to the internal layout of the protected structure to restore servants quarters is being considered by Kerry County Council planners and a decision is due on Monday. The works will cost up to half a million euro including VAT and they include the restoration of the laundry room.

The “Servants Dining Hall”, also downstairs, is to be restored and the original flagstones preserved. Freestanding furniture is to be installed and new tours of the house are to include this domestic area. The works will mean the taking out of a tiered audiovisual room installed in the 1970s, and the relocation of the weavers’ shop from the core servants’ basement area. Chris Ryan, historic building architect retained by the Trustees of Muckross House to assess the application, has told the council planners the proposal will have minimal impact on the historic fabric of the building and “will strengthen the historic story being told by the house.” A covering letter with the application also says that the house in the heart of the Killarney National Park is one of the country’s most famous stately homes. It is richly

half centuries - old tourism industry and brand, now that the fat of the rich lands and rich industrial north Kerry is being trimmed. Listowel, long an agricultural town with a literary history and a single hotel, was once again the venue last week for “a major tourism conference” by Kerry County Council. On Monday, questions were raised by the mayor of Tralee, Norma Foley, about “progressing the County Kerry marketing brand” that is to be the new face of tourism. “Brand Kerry should be aggressively used,” the Tralee mayor said. We were told that a company has been contracted to provide a tourism brand identity of the county. And the “Destination Kerry” brand will be launched in the autumn. I am glad I am not the only one concerned that brand Kerry, associated with butter and cows, and football boots, is in danger of swallowing up the classier Killarney. Cllr Donal Grady expressed his fears of diluting the already established international tourism brand that is Killarney. He had a problem with this “aggressive” pushing of Kerry as a tourism brand, as Killarney was the capital of tourism in Kerry and in Ireland, he said plainly. He was roundly turned on by Tralee and north Kerry councillors including Mayor Foley who said Tralee was the county town of Kerry. And all areas were equal in tourism. “Killarney is the capital of tourism in Ireland. End of story!” Cllr Grady shouted back, standing his ground.

furnished to give an insight into the lives of the landed gentry. The basement area would give insight into the lives of the workers, it said. Old pictures of the laundry room, by the MacMonagles, have been included in the application. The works would also quicken up tours of the house, which is “a vital part of the tourist industry locally,” it says. Interestingly, this confirms what I have heard since this column revealed that Muckross was one of the few State attractions to have dropped numbers last year. The mandatory tour system is taking up to a half an hour longer than expected. This is backed up by the application which says visitors tend to linger in the shop to make purchases and the new tour would be more free flowing. No objections have been received to the proposal.

The play creates a collage of voices using fragments of historical testimony, from The Late Late Show to the Kerry Babies Tribunal, to reimagine the predicaments of Irish women. Funded by Kerry Council Arts, the play will be presented at 9pm.

Bug In Tap Water SOME 62,066 people living in the Killarney and Tralee areas are among 161,000 people at risk of illness from a microscopic parasite in drinking water, the Environmental Protection Agency has warned. The agency said 25 supplies to homes, schools, hospitals and businesses around the country do not have adequate treatment to kill off the cryptosporidium bug.

FOOTBALL stars of the future will get their moment to shine at the sixth Colm Cooper Invitational Tournament. It will be hosted on Saturday, September 23, by the Dr Crokes GAA Club at Lewis Road. The games commence at 11.40am and the tournament is scheduled to be completed by 6.30pm. “I really enjoy these games as the players are very honest and the skill levels seem to improve every year,” said Colm Cooper. Teams will play in groups to qualify for the cup and plate semi-finals and finals.” The tournament trophies and medals are kindly sponsored by the Coffey family in memory of the late Denis Coffey, RIP, a former player and officer with Dr Crokes. “Apart from being a memorable occasion for the young players, it is a wonderful day for the club to honour Colm and his family,” said John.

Call To Address Lost Local Authority Income Streams THE cathaoirleach of Killarney Municipal District, Councillor Niall Kelleher, has said there is no appetite for an increase in the Local Property Tax rate in Kerry. The Fianna Fáil councillor is calling on the Government to reimburse Kerry County Council on lost income streams in an effort to avoid an increase in Local Property Tax. Local authorities have the scope to increase or decrease LPT by a 15% differential and a possible increase to the rate was

flouted at the monthly meeting of Kerry County Council on Monday. Lost income streams for the council, such as water services, and National Pay Agreement demands, could lead to a deficit in the services budget and was suggested an increase in LPT may be necessary. Cllr Kelleher is opposed to any increase, saying the Government should replace lost income streams and not place the burden of increased charges, such as raised LPT, on local authorities.

Six Ways Winter Affects Your Health Small classes (maximum of 12) 10-week courses for 7-12 year olds commencing Thursday, 28th September (4-5pm; 5-6pm) Please contact Nicola on 0646636630; 0871902593

Plus Tips To Overcome Them Winter does more than just raise your heating bill and chill your bones. It can have an effect on both your physical and mental health.

1. Winter makes some people SAD The short, dark days of winter can lead to seasonal affective disorder (SAD). This distinct type of depression often comes with extreme sleepiness, increased appetite, a heavy “leaden” sensation in the limbs, loss of interest, sense of hopelessness and social withdrawal. Doctors may recommend light therapy, exercise and cognitive behavioral therapy to help overcome SAD.

2. Winter dries the eyes

Burning, itching, a feeling of grittiness— these symptoms may indicate dry eye, a condition in which the eyes don’t produce enough tears or the right quality of tears. This condition is often worse in winter because of the dry, cold air and the dryness that comes from heaters. Options for relief include artificial tears, dietary changes, prescription eye drops or even surgery in the most complicated cases.

3. Weather swings may trigger migraines Research is not definitive, but anecdotally, a high number of patients note a strong connection between what’s happening outside and what’s happening inside their heads. Extremes in weather, including coming storms and big swings in temperature and barometric pressure, may all play a part. Try keeping a headache diary to determine if weather is a migraine trigger for you.

4. Winter cracks and burns your skin Skin is prone to dryness in the winter, when humidity is low both indoors and

out. Try taking short showers rather than long baths, which tend to dry the skin further. Use moisturiser throughout the day and run a humidifier in your home. And don’t skip the sunscreen.

5. Winter changes eating habits in some In cold winter weather, your body experiences changes in energy levels, metabolism and even food preferences. Think rich but not-so-healthy “comfort foods.” Counteract these urges by making smart food choices: homemade soups over high-sodium and highly processed storebought varieties, for example.

6. Hibernation can wreck your exercise plan If the cold days and dark nights of winter make you want to hibernate, consider this: Being inactive can take a toll on your fitness, your weight and your mood. Stay active with indoor options such as exercise classes, walking at the mall or home fitness videos. Or, if you’re feeling adventurous, try a new activity.

Time Travel at Great Southern

Joe Scally, company director, and Ettienne Van Vrede, CEO of the Hayfield Family Collection.

15.09.17 Words: Eve Kelliher IN NEWS that set our thoughts on a firm track back in time, it was announced that The Malton Hotel will have its name retired as the Great Southern Killarney is reinstated on January 26, 2018. Owned by the Scally family since 2014, the historic grand-dame style hotel is part of the Hayfield Family Collection that includes the Killarney Royal in Killarney and Hayfield Manor in Cork City. Over the past two years, the family-run company has invested in a major restoration programme – the grand foyer has been restored to the original Victorian design, the public areas have been redecorated in classical style, an extensive bedroom refurbishment programme has been undertaken and the facilities surrounding the grand ballroom have been upgraded. According to Ettienne van Vrede, CEO of the Hayfield Family Collection: “It is fitting and appropriate that we bring the wonderful Great Southern brand back to this beautiful property. Over the past two years we have carefully upgraded the hotel to reflect its heritage, grandeur and position within the town. Ironically, and perhaps not surprisingly, many people still refer to the hotel as the Great Southern such was the strength of its legacy and heritage. We look forward to celebrating the next chapter of this great story.” Built in 1854 by the Great Southern and Western Railway Company and called The Railway Hotel – the first hotel to be owned by a railway company in either Ireland or Great Britain – from 1896 until 2009 the property was known as the Great Southern Hotel Killarney.

QUEST KILLARNEY OCTOBER Quest Killarney adventure race takes place in just over 3 weeks on 7th October. In the run up to it, every week here in the Killarney Advertiser, we will give you all the information you need to get ready for the world’s biggest adventure race.

WHAT’S THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN QUEST KILLARNEY MARCH AND QUEST KILLARNEY OCTOBER?

You may be aware there are two Quest Killarney events each year – in October and in March. We get asked this question a lot – what is there a difference between the two? In a nut shell, both routes are totally different but allencompassing of the different sections of Killarney National Park and the Black Valley. Each route on each event is unique with its own level of challenge. It’s all personal preference. Some people like the cycle route in October through the Black Valley, some people like the fact they don’t have to go up Cardiac steps in March, some people like Mangerton and Torc trails in October. Horses for Courses!! Quest Killarney October is one of the biggest adventure races in the world and where it all started for us as it was our original adventure race. March has grown with us in its own right and although there are three routes as opposed to five in October, it is an equally challenging and thoroughly enjoyable, rewarding event. The main differences, common to all routes, are as follows: • The lake used for Kayaking in October is Muckross Lake, in March it’s the Upper Lake • The expert route in March runs through the Black Valley, in October the experts go up the delightful Mangerton Mountain! • The cycles are on different routes • The ‘Cardiac’ steps are not part of the March routes. In October ‘Cardiac’ is many participants’ highlight of the ‘Mini’ route! Registration for Quest Killarney March will open in October. It will take place on Saturday 10th of March 2018. We are here to help so if you have any questions on the route or the gear required feel free to email us at info@eliteevents.ie We have lots of information on our website, including training plans, tips and advice from the experts.

MOST of us will recall National League basketball as part and parcel of growing up in Killarney and it will make a long-awaited welcome return to town after an absence of nearly a decade. St Paul’s Killarney, playing under the “Scotts Lakers” banner, will open their campaign with a home game against Dublin Lions this Saturday, September 16, at 7.30pm in Killarney Sports and Leisure Centre. The new National League campaign for Scotts Lakers was launched by Brendan Griffin, Minister of State at the Department of Transport, Tourism and Sport, in Scotts Hotel, on Friday night. MC for the occasion Kieran Healy introduced the various speakers to the huge crowd that attended the launch. St Paul’s Basketball Club chairman Padraig said the club has been growing at a tremendous rate in recent years catering for 400 juvenile members. Scotts Lakers National League committee chairman Aidan Quirke spoke about the fantastic response from local businesses in Killarney and how it would not be possible to compete at national level without them. He was also lavish in his praise for Maurice O’Donoghue and Scotts Hotel for their role as the main team sponsor and also KilBrendan Griffin, Minister of State at the Department of Transport, Antuan Bootle, Scotts Hotel larney Credit Union for coming on board as a club sponsor. Killarney’s Long Association With Basketball

Derek Lee, Jordan Lee, Alicia Lee, Jason Lee and Andrew Fitzgerald.

KILLARNEY’S long association with basketball stretches back to the Busby Babes era and the great Gleneagle team of the 1970s and 1980s. At the launch of the return of National League basketball to town, the mayor of Killarney Municipal District Niall Kelleher praised the O’Donoghue family of The Gleneagle Hotel for their support of the sport in the past and their support of the new team through Scotts Hotel. Scotts Hotel Managing Director Maurice O’Donoghue said it was a very easy decision to come on board as team sponsor considering the impressive work being done at juvenile level.

He also recalled the long association the O’Donoghue family have with Killarney basketball and told the story about his own father, the late Maurice O’Donoghue, and Paudie O’Connor going to the USA to recruit the very first American basketballers that came to Ireland in 1979. “Three generations of the O’Donoghue family have had a great association with Killarney basketball and we look forward to continuing it,” he said. St Paul’s Basketball Club founding member Tom Looney recalled the massive history of basketball in Killarney and the establishment of St Paul’s in 1985 to cater for juvenile basketball.

A Weekly Round-Up Of News + Views From Kerry And Around

What On Earth Was George Hook Thinking? Opinion

Words: Eve Kelliher

SHOCK JOCK tactics aside, what was George Hook thinking? The 76-year-old former sports commentator asked on his Newstalk FM radio show last week: “is there no blame now for the person who puts themselves in danger?” The answer is very simple, George – rapists are to blame for rape. Speaking during his radio show, High Noon, on Friday, Hook discussed the case of the 19-yearold woman who alleges she was raped by a former member of the British swim team. She alleges that she was raped by the man after having consensual sex with a different man who was the swimmer’s friend. “She was passed around, went the story. And ap-

parently she went to bed with one guy and he goes out and another guy comes in. She doesn’t

want to have relations with the second guy but he forces himself upon her. Awful,” said Hook. He continued: “But when you then look deeper into the story you have to ask certain questions. Why does a girl who just meets a fella in a bar go back to a hotel room? She’s only just barely met him. She has no idea of his health conditions, she has no idea who he is, she has no idea of what dangers he might pose.” Since then, Hook has apologised — three times on Twitter the day after his comments, then live on air. But what possessed him to make such bizarre, misogynistic and uninformed remarks in the first place?

Sinead O’Connor Talks To Dr Phil KUDOS to Sinead O’Connor for speaking out to inspire others. The singer discussed her struggles with mental health in an interview with US chat show host Dr Phil. In the interview aired on Tuesday in the US, O’Connor said that she wanted to inspire others to reach out if they had mental health issues. “The fact that there’s such stigma about mental illness means that the illness doesn’t get talked about,” she said. She said famous people were least likely to ask for help. “There’s a certain group of people who are absolutely afraid to open their mouth about mental illness, and that is rockers.”

Frank Vincent Of ‘The Sopranos’ Dies At 78 FRANK VINCENT, who played the vicious mob boss Phil Leotardo on The Sopranos, has died. He was 78. Vincent died Wednesday of complications from heart surgery in New Jersey, according to reports from The Blast and TMZ.

Vincent also portrayed tough guys for director Martin Scorsese in Raging Bull (1980), Goodfellas (1990) — as the real-life Gambino gangster Billy Batts, he with the memorable line, “Go home and get your shine box!” — and Casino (1995).

Miss Texas Call Lessons From Life On The Road

TWITTER users gave Miss Texas a round of applause after she condemned President Trump’s response to the events in Charlottesville last month. Margana Wood took to the Miss America stage during the Q&A section of the pageant, where she was asked by a judge about Trump’s criticism of the white supremacist rally as being violent “on all sides”. The question read: “Last month, a demonstration of neo-Nazis, white supremacists and the KKK in Charlottesville, Virginia, turned violent and a counter-protester was killed.

“The president said there was shared blame with ‘very fine people’ on both sides. Were there? Tell me yes or no, and explain.” Despite the 20-second time limit, she succinctly responded in 15, saying: “I think that the white supremacist issue, it was very obvious that it was a terrorist attack. And I think that President Donald Trump should have made a statement earlier, addressing the fact, and making sure that all Americans feel safe in this country. “That is the number one issue right now.”

AT THIS time of year the suitcases as being pushed to the back of the wardrobe and the cap returned firmly to that bottle of sunscreen as summer holidays become a distance memory. But the Zapp family from South America definitely changed the nation’s thinking about travel this week. As a pair of newlyweds, Herman and Candelaria Zapp embarked on a road trip from their native Argentina to Alaska. It was supposed to take them six months but they ended up travelling around the world for 17 years, visiting over 80 countries across five continents.

Words: Eve Kelliher

They gathered countless memories and the couple had four children along the way - Pampa, Tehue, Paloma and Wallaby. On a visit to Dublin this week, Herman said: “Thank God we followed our dream. It has become a way of life and it’s so spectacular. Every day something new; something new to taste, something new to see.” The family travel in a 1928 Graham Paige vintage car which was a gift from Herman’s grandfather. “My grandpa told me three things, if you want to get far, you have to go slowly,” he told RTE. “This car moves very slowly.”

Monkey See, Monkey Sue Opinion

Words: Eve Kelliher

IT MADE us all laugh, but it does smack of a world gone mad when news broke that a photographer has settled a two-year legal fight against an animal rights group over a “monkey selfie” picture. Naruto the macaque monkey took the image in the Indonesian jungle in 2011 when it picked up a camera owned by David Slater from Monmouthshire. US judges had said copyright protection could not be applied

to the monkey but Peta said the animal should benefit. Peta’s appeal on the “monkey’s behalf” was dismissed but Mr Slater has agreed to donate 25% of any future revenue. In a joint statement from Peta and Mr Slater, it said the photographer will give a quarter of the funds he receives from selling the monkey selfies to registered charities “dedicated to protecting the welfare or habitat of Naruto”.

School Dormitory Fire Kills At Least 23 In Malaysia

AT LEAST 23 people, mostly teenage boys, have died after being trapped in a burning school dormitory. Locals on the outskirts of Malaysia’s capital Kuala Lumpur described being unable to save the boys as they begged for help from behind barred windows. Firefighters were called to the

three-storey building at around 5.40am local time on Thursday and took an hour to put out the blaze. Suspected to have been caused by an electrical short-circuit or a lit mosquito repellent coil, the fire broke out in the sleeping quarters on the school’s top floor.

NORTH KOREA has fired a ballistic missile over Japan, its latest act of aggression against a neighbour and Western ally amid an escalating war of rhetoric with the United States. The missile launch is a stern test for both President Doanld Trump and the UN who have so far failed to get Pyongyang to rein in its nuclear ambitions. The Japanese government said the missile, which was launched from Pyongyang’s Sunan district, had passed over Hokkaido and the country’s military did

not try to shoot it down. The US military also said it had detected an intermediate-range ballistic missile. Japan issued a nationwide alert that urged residents in the country’s north to take shelter, and Japanese Chief Cabinet Secretary Yoshihide Suga told reporters he condemned the attack in the strongest possible terms. US Secretary of State Rex Tillerson urged China and Russia to take direct action against North Korea in response to its latest missile launch.

IPhone X Rings In The Changes THE LONG AWAITED iPhone X is official, with the firm unveiling the 10th-anniversary device at its much-hyped Apple Event on Tuesday. There’s also an allnew ‘Super Retina’ resolution, a reinforced glass design and support for wireless charging, with the iPhone X arriving with support for the Qi charging standard.

Garda Commissioner Retirement Discussion Leaves Sour Taste THE discussions surrounding the retirement of former Garda Commissioner Nóirín O’Sullivan cut to the core of our society. First of all, it must be galling to her that the Government believes the new Garda commissioner will need to be paid about €300,000, or 65% more than the current salary, if strong international candidates are to be attracted. On the other hand, despite leaving the post halfway through her tenure, Ms O’Sullivan will retire with a lump sum of close to €300,000 and a pension of

€90,000 a year. Her time as acting commissioner following the resignation of her predecessor Martin Callinan in 2014 helped her qualify for a full pension. Ms O’Sullivan is entitled to a full commissioner’s pension after three years. It’s all very well to be defending one’s entitlements but it was on her watch that so many scandals, including the breathalyser furore, erupted. Granted, they were inherited problems, but it still leaves a sour taste.

Read

The Bookworm

Reviewed: I am, I am, I am – Seventeen Brushes with Death by Maggie O’Farrell HAVING read all her fiction to date, I always look forward to news of a new Maggie O’Farrell book. One of the most anticipated books of the year, I am, I am, I am is a departure from her usual novels. A memoir with a twist, it is a story of a woman’s life in near-death experiences – and you will finish newly conscious of

your own vulnerability. Maggie charts a childhood illness she was not expected to survive and a teenage yearning to escape that nearly ended in disaster. Absolutely unforgettable, this is an extraordinary work by Costa Novel-Award winner and Sunday Times bestselling author.

Sky Atlantic - Tin Star

Set in the majestic Canadian Rockies, Tin Star tells the story of Jim Worth (Roth), a former British detective now small town police chief, who brings his family to the tiny, tranquil town of Little Big Bear for a better life. When a vast new oil refinery, fronted by corporate liaison Elizabeth Bradshaw (Hendricks), opens nearby and their new home is flooded with workers looking for drugs, gambling and prostitution, Jim has to work hard to protect his family and the town from organized crime. Then crime strikes back.

And when Jim’s family suffers a shocking tragedy, old, dark and dangerous secrets surface. We discover that Jim is not the man we think he is but is in fact ‘Jack’ - the professional name for his alcoholic alter-ego: a man more unpredictable, more charismatic and infinitely more menacing than Jim. Part drama, part thriller and part dark comedy, Tin Star is an exhilaratingly smart, breathlessly suspenseful thrill ride of a show as deceit, guilt, love, and all-consuming rage lead inexorably to a gut-wrenching finale.

Taking A Bite Of The Big Apple Our digital journalist Aishling O’Hanlon was impressed when she visited New York during the week EVERYONE dreams of going to New York at some point in their life. New York is an amazing city with so many wonderful things to do; the Empire State Building, Statue of Liberty and Madison Square Garden are some of the main attractions. If you go to New York, be sure to check out Jersey Gardens Shopping Centre. It has the major brands such as Hollister, Abercrombie and Fitch, Alex and Ani, Converse and Guess to name a few. The best thing about Jersey Gardens is that it’s a factory outlet so all of the shops there have discounted prices and many of them have sales which means a lot more bang for your buck. You also don’t have to pay tax on your purchases there. When I go on a holiday, I like to go exploring. The Empire State Building at night is amazing, but it can be very windy up there on the 86th floor. I wouldn’t recommend paying the extra 20 dollars for the 102nd floor, it’s the exact same view and you can’t go outside. Go to the Rockefeller Centre, aka Top Of The Rock, during the day. You’ll have all the views of the Empire State Building but you can go to the very top floor, which is out in the open so you can get amazing pictures with no glass blocking you.

If you’re a sport fanatic like my boyfriend, Madison Square Garden is the place for you. Our own Irish champion Conor McGregor fought there and it’s also home of the very first Wrestlemania. Ground Zero is another beautiful attraction to visit. It’s so peaceful and calm there. We went there two days before the 9/11 memorial service began and it was amazing to see how respectful everyone was, laying flowers at the site and little American flags attached to victims’ names. The Statue of Liberty was my favourite part of the trip. We got the pedestal access ticket, which allowed us to go inside the statue and to the base of Lady Liberty. Finally, when packing be sure to pack comfortable walking shoes. I’ve done a good bit of travelling and New York is definitely top of my list for destinations I’ve visited thus far.

Holiday Hints & Tips Now is the time to plan next year’s summer holidays, says Torc Travel

Your Local Holiday Specialists

TORC TRAVEL Killarney Tel: 064 6632911 Email: travel@torctravel.ie

SUMMER is easily the busiest travel time of the year. With schools being closed, summer is the best time of the year for some rest and relaxation! Unfortunately, this year we at Torc Travel witnessed many people missing out on that well-deserved holiday. The reason? Waiting far too long to book! As we got closer to summertime the prices skyrocketed and the availability quickly faded. How can you avoid that? By booking early! There are already flights out for summer 2018 just waiting to be booked. So, what are the benefits of booking early?

Is there a certain hotel or room type that you and your family prefer? Or maybe you are tied to certain dates. By waiting to book your holiday you run the risk of them being sold out especially for Spain and Portugal. Remember, we also have our neighbours from the UK and continental Europe traveling during the summer!

Pricing

Payment Plans

Since summer is the busiest time of the year it is also the time that airlines and hotels make most of their money. By booking your holiday early you are getting the best prices. A question we hear time and time again is “but what

if the prices go down” that is highly unlikely, especially for the summer. This year we witnessed some great prices on flights closer to dates but the hotel prices were extremely high!

Availability

Here at Torc Travel, we offer you the benefit of being able to slowly pay off your holiday. After you pay a deposit you are able to pay as you please until your final balance date, allowing you to spread the cost out!

EU Guiding Principles For Brexit Talks THE Joint Committee on European Union Affairs has welcomed the publication of EU “guiding principles” for Brexit talks on Ireland and Northern Ireland. As committee chairman, I would like to say the guiding principles published in relation to upcoming Brexit talks on Ireland and Northern Ireland are positive and helpful. It is clear that the unique circumstances on the island of Ireland, in particular the Good Friday Agreement and the Common Travel Area, are fully recognised, which is very much appreciated. Now, we must continue dialogue and talk about potential ways in which those

problems may be addressed to the benefit of all citizens affected. As Mr Barnier highlighted to a delegation of the Joint Committee on European Union Affairs in February, flexible and imaginative solutions are required. I am encouraged to again see this approach in the Guiding Principles today and look forward to further engagement on the detail of any proposed solutions. The Guiding Principles reflect the EU’s desire for these objectives to be achieved, with the goal of fully mitigating the effects of Brexit on the island of Ireland. Urgent Need For Daycare Centre AT THE July 2017 monthly meeting of Kerry County Council, I called on the HSE to develop an Alzheimer’s daycare centre in Killarney as there is a very urgent need for such a facility. The HSE replied that at present the Rockmount centre in Kilgarvan and St Joseph’s centre in Rathmore cater for persons with Alzheimer’s. The Kilgarvan centre is purpose built and caters for up to 25 people. Transport is organised for people attending this service. The HSE further stated that at present a review is taking place of day care centres for the elderly in the Cork/ Kerry region with a view to determin-

ing the extent to which they meet current needs. The findings of this survey will help the HSE to determine future needs and will allow it to consider the need for further appropriate buildings or sites and the locations where they are required. Quite a few families in the Killarney area have spoken with me on the urgent need for a centre of excellence for their relatives. I the HSE to move quickly in deciding future strategy for the development of a Killarney facility. Michael Gleeson (Councillor), Clasheen, Killarney

Housing Crisis

I HAVE been highlighting the housing crisis for some time now. I am asking Kerry County Council to make a special case to the Minister for Finance requesting him to introduce as a matter of extreme urgency, in this year’s Budget, a town and village renewal/tax incentive scheme that will encourage businesses and individuals to invest in projects that will bring life back to the towns and villages of Kerry and Ireland and that will be of benefit

to the greater community. The housing crisis should be to the forefront of this scheme with priority being given to town centre sites and street side properties that are derelict, rundown, closed for prolonged periods and/or for sale. Michael Cahill (Councillor), Glenbeigh

Jill Duggan of Killarney Toning & Beauty Studio explains the benefits of Pilates-based toning tables

Success On The Double THE SHAPEMASTER range of Powertone equipment incorporates Pilates techniques in a modern range of dual-function equipment modelled on the traditional lie-down “toning table” concept of years gone by. Unlike conventional gym equipment, Powertone does not rely exclusively on muscle power, it is controlled by an electronic power system, so the user can work passively or actively, depending on their ability. As the user does not have to provide the motive force, they do not have to overcome inertia in order to use the equipment, so Powertone is a perfect choice for anyone coming back to exercise after periods of rest or inactivity or for discerning exercisers who believe in the “work smart, not hard” philosophy for exercise. The six pieces of equipment in the Powertone range will help to exercise and stretch all the major muscle groups in the body, whilst the soothing motion promotes relaxation. The complete set of six Shapemaster Powertone Toning Tables continues to set the standard as the world’s number one power-assisted exercise program. But now it also incorporates Pilates – two unique systems in one, working your body smart, not hard! There is no getting up and down on the ground so it’s a lot more accessible. SPLASHES of colour abounded at New York Fashion Week. Off-the-wall dye jobs and statement makeup were to the fore, as were graphic accents that were just as thought provoking as the bright and edgy ensembles on the street. An understated glamour entered the equation, too — even Alexander Wang, long known for his downtown cool, showcased glossy blowouts in his Spring 2018 runway show. It was definitely time to think pink, with model Stella Lucia trading her blanched lengths for a “rose quartz” dye job that melded lavender and petal pink for a crystalline take on the rosy hue. Silver proved to be the new platinum with Kylie Jenner enjoying a standout platinum moment in the front row. As for the new kids on the block? On the heels of Kaia Gerber’s Marc Jacobs Beauty campaign announcement, the next generation of celebrity beauties staked their future claims to It Girl status, including Madonna’s daughter Lourdes Leon who claimed her front-row birthright.

tes o N e c a September Is A Gr Killarney singer and singing teacher Grace Foley says...

Time For Change

IN MY writing I often draw a parallel between sports and music. The athlete and musician have so much in common. We both start out with a desire to perform. We strive to perfect our skill by practising regularly and generally taking care of ourselves. What we must remember is that we all have our own unique attributes. Whether you are part of team or are a solo performer, the only way you can bring the best out in yourself is by never leaving behind the essence of who you are. I recently watched the Irish movie Handsome Devils and you really can’t beat an inspirational sports movie to get the blood pumping. It had everything from the topic of sexuality to the struggle of the athlete in keeping his mind clear while on the field. As in life, the content of these movies usually boils down to one topic; embracing your individuality. People love certain players, not just because of their sporting ability but because of their person-

ality. People’s favourite singers are often not the most talented musicians, they just have that “X factor”. There are some great quotes out there like “be yourself, everyone else is taken” and the age-old, “to thine own self be true” but I came across an absolute gem in this movie. The English teacher is struggling to impart wisdom onto a class of young men whose biggest fear is being considered “different”. In a moment of pure frustration with the class the teacher says that if “you spend your whole life being someone else who is going to be you?” September is a time for big change so if you are a student in school or college or indeed simply a student of life, remember that it is a good thing to be you. It is better to leave your mark on this world than to leave behind regret. We all have a unique fingerprint that no one else possesses...use it. • Grace’s website is www.gracefoley.ie

Mercedes’ F1-Inspired Hypercar THE days of road cars built around racing technology was in the past for the most part but Mercedes-AMG unveiled its long awaited Project One, a €2.4 million hypercar stuffed with all the tech that Lewis Hamilton has in his F1 car. Where the equally pricey Bugatti Chiron summons 1,500 horsepower from an 8-litre W16 engine that can empty a 26-gallon fuel tank in eight minutes, the Project One relies on a tiny 1.6 V6 engine and a few electric motors. Topping out at 217 mph and going from 0 to 60 mph in about 2.6 seconds based on the current F1 technology. The 1.6 V6 making roughly 700

horsepower at 11,000 rpm, a bit short of the F1 car’s 15,000 rpm. A further 500 horsepower comes from three electric motors—one on each front wheel, the third integrated into the engine. A fourth motor spins the turbocharger to make sure there’s no turbo lag. Project One’s interior also mimics an F1 car, albeit with the addition of a passenger seat. The steering wheel comes with the host of multi-coloured buttons and dials that the real racers use. Displays include dual 10-inch hi-res LCDs, naturally. Mercedes says it will make just 275, every one of them sold already, starting production in 2019.

Honda Urban EV Concept FORGET super cars, hot hatches and SUV coupes – the star of the year’s biggest and most important motor show, the Frankfurt Motor Show, was a compact electric vehicle. The Honda Urban EV Concept is one of the funkiest show cars at the Frankfurt show.

It’s understood Honda is about to embark on an electrification adventure which will see more and more models go full EV or hybrid. Meanwhile, the Urban EV concept won’t win any awards for creative naming, but it ushers in a new EV era for Honda and is the first of many EVs expected from the Japanese car maker.

Laferrari Aperta Fetches Record €8.33M At Auction A HISTORICALLY-SIGNIFICANT LaFerrari Aperta has sold for €8.33 million at a charity auction event – the most money ever fetched by a 21st century vehicle. A mystery buyer went all-out in a bidding war with at least 12 other auction attendees at the weekend for the very last Aperta hypercar produced, the vehicle selling for

twice the amount officials had expected. Auction house RM Sotheby’s said the buyer, whose identity remains under wraps, saw nothing but a digital mock-up of the 210th and final drop-top to be produced by the Prancing Horse. The car’s entire €8.33 million sale price will be donated to Save the Children, an international youth education charity.

BIRTHDAY REMEMBRANCE

BROSNAN

FLEMING

In loving memory of Dan and Mary Brosnan, late of Rockfield, Faha, whose birthdays occur on 4th September and 14th September.

Birthday remembrance of Sheila Fleming late of Clydine, Kilcummin Killarney, whose birthday occurs on 16th September.

You were the kind of person Who left loving memories behind And special days like your birthday Bring these fond memories to mind And memories are possessions That time can never destroy For it is in happy remembrance The heart finds its greatest joy.

We seldom ask for miracles, But today just one would do, To have the front door open, And to see you walking through.

Missed and loved by Gerard, TJ, Junior and all the Brosnan and Doona family x

BIRTHDAY REMEMBRANCES BROSNAN

We travel to your graveside, Some flowers we lay with care, But the hardest thing to do, Is turn and leave you there. Sadly missed by your loving husband Pat, daughter Marcella, sons David and John, son-in-law David, daughter-in-law Katrin and grandsons Conor Patrick & Jack Finbar.

O’DONOGHUE

Thinking every day, of our dear brother, Cornelius Guerin, beloved son of the late Cathy and Cornelius Guerin, Irish Cottage ,Muckross Road,Killarney, who very sadly, and to young, left us on 22/9/14

In loving memory of Michael O’Donoghue, Farmyard, Ross Road, Killarney who died on 20th September 2014.

Benedictus By John O’Donohue (1956 - 2008) For Cornelius On the day when the weight deadens, On your shoulders and you stumble, May the clay dance to balance you. And when your eyes freeze Behind the grey window And the ghost of loss Gets in to you, May a flock of colours, Indigo, red, green and azure blue Come to awaken in you Meadow of delight. When the canvas frays In the currach of thought And a stain of ocean Blackens beneath you, May there come across the waters A path of yellow moonlight To bring you safely home.

Birthday remembrance of Mary Brosnan and Dan Brosnan both late of Rockfield Faha.

In loving memory of Pat Foley Mounthenry, Firies, Killarney Who died on the 20th September 2015.

May the nourishment of The earth be yours, May the clarity of light be yours, May the fluency of the ocean be yours, May the protection of The ancestors be yours.

Somewhere beyond the sunset, Where loved ones never die, You sleep in a beautiful garden, Beneath a golden sky.

Always a smile instead of a frown, Always a hand when one was down, Always true thoughtful and kind, Wonderful memories you left behind.

And so may a slow Wind work these words Of love around you, An invisible cloak to mind your life.

Though Heaven and earth divide us, We are never far apart, For you are always in our thoughts, And forever in our hearts.

Sadly missed by your loving wife Kitty, sons Mossie and John, daughter Geraldine, daughter-in-law Anne, sonin-law Eamonn, grandsons Stephen, Gavin, Jonathan and Kevin and extended family.

From your Family Catherine, Ella and Connie and your sisters and brothers Mary, Patrick, Margaret, Timothy, Denis and their families.

Loved and remembered always by Mam, brother and sisters, brothers-in-law, sisters-in-law, nieces and nephews xx

Pat’s Anniversary Mass will be held in St Gertrude’s Church Firies on Tuesday September 19th at 7.30pm.

4TH ANNIVERSARY WILLIAMS

It broke our hearts to lose you, But you did not go alone, A part of us went with you, The day God called you home. In life we loved you dearly, In death we love you still, In our hearts you hold a place, No one could ever fill. Sadly missed by your cousins Adrian, Eileen, Kieran, Alan, Conor, Louise, Niall and families.

In loving memory of Seani McCarthy late of Knockeenduve and 6 Marian Tce Killarney who died on September 13th, 2015.

They say there is a reason, They say that time will heal, But neither time nor reason, Will change the way we feel.

Seani, Of all the many blessings, However great or small, To have you for an uncle, Was the greatest one of all,

There are so many people I want to thank. My brothers who took such care to make all of the funeral arrangements for me. Without them I not have been able to cope. To my mother and sisters who were there for me with love. To all at K.W.D who gave Brian such a lovely send off. He would have been so proud. Much love to Sean and all the K.W.D staff. To my workmates and management at the Caragh restaurant who gave me so much love and support and continue to do so. And to all my customers who came to the funeral. Father O’Brien how can we thank you enough, you came to our house and gave us such peace, thank you and most of all my lovely children. Staff at Killarney Inn, members of the golf society. All who attended the funeral, our neighbours and all that brought us so much food, thank you. Brian we know you did not want to leave us and you would love to still be here with us. We miss your silly ways, your loving smile and most of all how safe we felt in your loving arms. Miss you so much, Your wife Ger, your children Kerrie, Sean, Daniel.

2ND ANNIVERSARY DALY

I hope your spirit soared in freedom, From the pain that gripped so tight, I hope you found the ease You searched for, On that wet September night, I hope your mind is clear and calm, And your tender heart is warm, You have no need for strength now, There’ll never be another storm, May the music of the angels, Be the sweet sounds that you hear, As you rest in Heaven’s garden, May you never shed another tear, I’ll wear your memory proudly, My brother...My true friend, May my love for you Reach Heaven above, Until we meet again. Always in our hearts and minds Patricia, Iain and Alan.

In loving memory of Seani McCarthy, late of Knockeenduve and Marian Terrace, Killarney, who passed away on 13th September 2015. I WOULD that we were, my beloved, white birds on the foam of the sea! We tire of the flame of the meteor, before it can fade and flee; And the flame of the blue star of twilight, hung low on the rim of the sky, Has awakened in our hearts, my beloved, a sadness that may not die. A weariness that comes for those dreamers, dew-dabbled, the lily and rose; Ah, dream not of them, my beloved, the flame of the meteor that goes, Or the flame of the blue star that lingers hung low in the fall of the dew: For I would we were changed to white birds on the wandering foam: I and you! I am haunted by numberless islands, and many a Danaan shore, Where Time would surely forget us, and Sorrow come near us no more; Soon far from the rose and the lily, and fret of the flames would we be, Were we only white birds, my beloved, buoyed out on the foam of the sea! By W.B. Yeats Always Loved, your wife Margaret x

In loving memory of John Daly late of Buddihans Kilcummin, Killarney Co. Kerry who died on the 15th of September 2015.

Forever loved and remembered by Paula and Mark.

Forever loved and remembered by Paul & Eileen.

Not a day goes by that We don’t think of you, And wish you were still here. Always in our thoughts and Forever in our hearts.

We miss your smile, Your joking ways, We miss the things, You used to say, And when old times, We do recall, It’s then we miss you, Most of all.

We can’t bring the old days back, When we were all together, The family chain is broken now, But memories live forever.

In loving memory of Seani McCarthy, Knockeenduve, Killarney who died on the 13th of September 2015.

With Love, Maureen & Willy.

Weed Explosion

15.09.17

In this weekly column, the clergy and members of the pastoral council offer an update on issues concerning the Church locally, nationally and globally

Life Through The Lens Of The Gospels MATTHEW 18:21-35: Jesus surprised Peter by telling him he needed to forgive seventy-seven times. Perhaps you have known the truth of this when something reminds you of a past hurt and you find you need in your heart to forgive again the person who hurt you. What was this like for you? How has a capacity to have a forgiving heart helped you? Sometimes we need to forgive ourselves for things we regret about past behaviour. What happens to you when you cannot do this? How has your ability to forgive yourself for past mistakes influenced your attitude towards yourself now? Are there people whose ability to forgive has inspired you? Recall them and the forgiveness they showed and give thanks for their example. John Byrne, OSA, Veritas

The Deep End IT SEEMS to me that weeds have exploded to an unmanageable level overnight. This morning I looked out of my kitchen window expecting to enjoy the pink blush on the flowers of my Hydrangea ‘Vanilla Fraise’, but horror of horrors, I was met with ground elder twice the size of the hydrangea… Not to mention the sea of pink that is the profusion of willowherb. And yes, sadly I am too late to kill it before it sets seed. However both these weeds are perennial, and so, I hang my head in shame, I am going to spray them with Glyphosate. Even as I write these words I can feel my stomach churn at the thought of using chemical weed killers – statistics run through my head – Ireland has the second highest rate of glyphosate in surface water in the EU, and it’s use is still a controversial issue. And yet… How to get rid of these weeds? I already know that a combination of guilt and stubbornness will see me using Neudorff organic fast acting weed killer, as opposed to the chemical. The jury is still out as to it’s effectiveness – is it because I use an organic compound made up mainly of pelargonic acid – that’s geranium oil to you and me- that I now have such a mess on my hands??? For those of you not besieged by guilt, autumn is an excellent time to spray with glyphosate. The leaves are transporting food DOWN to the roots for winter storage, so that is where your chemical will end up, and where it will be most effective. On another note…September is an excellent time to sow a new lawn. The ground is still warm enough for germination and there is enough time before the cold of winter sets in to have it well established. For those who are struggling with the lawn they have, we are coming to a time where raking out thatch, aerating the soil, applying a topdressing and scarifying are all going to benefit next year’s growth. Do not feed your lawn with a high nitrogen feed at this stage, or you will be mowing on Christmas day! Autumn lawn feed is a specialised product which has a high level of phosphorous and potash, which toughen grass as well as encouraging root growth. As always, I advise using a product which has michorrizal fungi in it, which is of great benefit to the root system. • Got a gardening question? Contact Debby Looney on barnhillgarden@gmail.com

on in Belgium. On release from prison he went to the Irish Embassy to ask for the price of a flight to return home, but was turned down. Another Irish man, Charlie Kiernan, overheard the exchange and decided to help, booking him a flight and buying him breakfast. When Shane asked how he could repay him, Charlie suggested he ‘pay it forward’. The kind gesture was the catalyst for Shane turning his life around. It is this sort of generous love that we hear about in today’s gospel, in the parable told by Jesus. The master who cancels the servant’s debt does so out of compassion and generosity. It is of no benefit to him to pardon the debt. He will be down ten thousand talents – one talent was worth more than 15 years’ wages of a labourer, so we are talking about a large sum of money! The servant is grateful, but not so grateful that he is willing to take pity on a fellow servant who owes him just one hundred denarii – one denarius was the usual day’s wage for a labourer. The parable speaks to us about the kindness of God, but also what he expects from us. Because we have been loved, we must love. Because we have been forgiven, we must forgive.

The All-Ireland Minor Final:

Five Things To Watch Out For The Kerry minors are gunning for a historic four-in-a-row and there’s plenty to keep an eye on, writes Adam Moynihan

All-Ireland Minor Final Kerry v Derry

Sunday at 1.15pm 1. The Cliffy Show Not for the first time in his fledgling career, all eyes will be on Kerry captain David Clifford as he looks to guide his team to another famous Croke Park win. The Fossa native has already had countless spectacular performances in HQ and the whole country will be hoping for another memorable display on Sunday. If he can reach anything approaching his best then the Kingdom have an excellent chance of prevailing and Clifford will well and truly cement his status as one of the best Kerry minors of all time.

With the seniors falling short this year, the spotlight is on the minors 2. Plenty of Eastern promise The future of East Kerry football is looking bright to say the least. In last month’s semi-final victory over Cavan, no fewer than nine of the starting 15 hailed from the East with a further two taking their place on the bench. Six different East Kerry clubs were represented in the backs alone. Niall Donohue (Firies), Chris O’Donoghue (Glenflesk), Seán O’Leary (Kilcummin), Patrick Warren (Gneeveguilla), Michael Potts (Dr Crokes) and Cian Gammell (Legion) all played and gave a good account of themselves while Clifford (Fossa), Donnchadh O’Sullivan (Firies) and Brian Friel (Rathmore) have consistently made valuable contributions up front. Crokes’ Nelu Doherty is the sub goalkeeper while his clubmate Jack Griffin came on in the last game and scored 1-1. With the Sem also dominating schools football in recent years, there certainly seems to be no shortage of young talent coming through the ranks in this particular corner of Kerry.

3. Will Kerry cope with the weight of expectations? There’s no question that Kerry will be overwhelming favourites going into Sunday’s final. Their recent record in this competition speaks for itself and, with the incredible amount of talent currently at their disposal, Kerry supporters will be expecting another comfortable win and a record-breaking four-in-a-row. With the senior team falling short once again this year, the spotlight will be very firmly on the minors and it will be interesting to see how these young stars deal with that kind of pressure.

4. A little piece of history Of course, for many of the current players it will be their first All-Ireland Minor Final and the last three years will be of little consequence to them, but they will all be well aware of the bigger picture. Kerry (1931/32/33), Dublin (1954/55/56) and Cork (1967/68/69) are the only teams to previously win three times in a row. Victory on Sunday would see them surpass the remarkable records of those great sides. This group have already made history by reaching a

fourth consecutive All-Ireland Final but if they can go one step further and beat Derry, they will be forever remembered as the first ever minor team to win fourin-a-row.

5. Can Derry spoil the party? Derry’s route to the final has been far less straightforward than Kerry’s and the Ulstermen will be hoping that extremely tough games against the likes of Tyrone, Sligo and Dublin will stand to them in the final. They’re averaging 19.6 points in this year’s Championship which shows that they have the potential to rack up a good score, although Kerry’s average of 25 points per game is even more impressive. The game could be won or lost in the goals department. Kerry have scored two goals in four of their five games while Derry have shipped just two goals all year, keeping three clean sheets in the process. They’ll probably need another one on Sunday to be in with a fighting chance of winning their first minor title since 2002.

Dr Crokes Crowned Kerry Club

Senior Champions

Words: Eamonn Fitzgerald

Dr Crokes 3-20 Kenmare Shamrocks 2-20 AET DR CROKES had to win the Kerry Senior Club Football Championship the hard way at Fitzgerald Stadium on Sunday last, where they had to come from behind in extra time for an Ambrose O’Donovan goal to snatch the title from a very well organised Kenmare side. Should a divisional board team win the Kerry SFC then Crokes would represent Kerry in the Munster and All Ireland club championships. This was a thrilling encounter and one looks forward to more of the same in 10 days’ time when both teams return to the Fitzgerald Stadium where they meet in the quarter final of the Kerry SFC.

SEÁN O’SHEA Seán O Shea, the former captain of an All Ireland MFC title, was the standout player in this game and ended up by scoring 12 points, 3 of these from play and a further 9 from frees. What a contribution and he ended up on the losing side.

STRONG WIND A very strong wind blew downfield in to the Lewis Road end and favoured Dr Crokes in the first half. They got off to a good start with points from their two most prominent forwards, Micheál Burns and Colm Cooper. Sean O’Shea opened his tally of nine points from frees and that settled Kenmare. They got a great boost in the seventh minute when O’Shea’s midfield partner David Hallissey linked up with Paul O’Connor and Stephen O’Brien to score their first goal and go in to the lead. However, it was short lived, as Crokes midfielder Johnny Buckley went right through the Kenmare defence before crashing the ball to the net. Points by Micheál Burns and Brian Looney put Crokes ahead 1-4 to 1-1. Against the run of play Micheál McCarthy ran through the centre past Alan O Sullivan to score Kenmare’s second goal. The sides were level for a short period 1-4 to 2-1 and then Crokes hit a purple patch when they scored 1-7 to Kenmare’s point. Daithí Casey was the star player in this period crowning it all by scoring his side’s second goal and a further two points. Crokes had three other chances of goals, but the final passes were lost to the Kenmare defence. Colm Cooper was also unlucky to see his effort for goal come off the crossbar. At half-time Crokes led 2-11 to 2-4.

SECOND HALF Aided by the strong wind Kenmare got their momentum going running at the Crokes defence, which was forced in to fouling and no better man than Seán O’Shea to kick those frees from all angles and all distances. Paul O’ Connor and Micheál McCarthy also raised white flags while Colm Cooper scored three points in a row. The sides were level in

the 50th minute, when O’Shea lofted over a longrange free. All the momentum was with Kenmare at this stage as they kicked for home in those final 10 minutes. Gooch marshalled the Crokes offence and the Crokes defence upped the game for the black and amber side. A point each from Gooch and Kieran O’Leary just edged Crokes in front but O’Shea, the man of the match made it 2-16 each sending the teams in to extra time. Dr Crokes rearranged their team and this brought Ambrose O’Donovan in to the fray. He had come on in the 57th minute for Brian Looney. The latter came back on for extra time. Sean O’Shea used the breeze to good effect and kicked over two points and they looked set for victory. Colm Cooper had moved out to centre forward and as he has done so often he steadied the ship as Crokes held on to possession until the opportunity arose for Ambrose O’Donovan to snatch the winning goal.

ANOTHER MEETING The sides will have to do it all over again on September 24 again at the Fitzgerald Stadium where there is a double bill. The Crokes game is fixed for 1.30pm followed by Rathmore v South Kerry at 3.15pm. Crokes were best served by Colm Cooper, Johnny Buckley, Micheál Burns and team captain Daithí Casey. His best form was in the first half. Fionn Fitzgerald got the job of marking Stephen O Brien his Kerry colleague and he did a great job confining O Brien to a single point. For Kenmare Sean O’ Shea was best supported by Micheál McCarthy, Paul O‘Connor, David Hallissey and Tommy O’Sullivan. Referee for the game was Peter Lyons.

MICHAEL O’CONNOR, RIP Crokes captain, Daithí Casey received the Michael O’Connor Cup, a very special trophy for the Crokes

cabinet as it is in memory of the work of the great late Michael O Connor from Ross Road.

DUBLIN TO WIN THREE-IN-A-ROW Dublin get the nod to complete the three-in-a-row of All Ireland SFC at Croke Park on Sunday next, but I expect a great performance from Mayo. We saw what they did to Kerry and they will match the Dubs for physicality and for overall fitness. Dublin have so many options and the strongest list of subs in the country. You can be sure that Andy Moran will not get the freedom he was afforded by Kerry. Mayo will look to him and to Keith Higgins, Lee Keegan, Colm Boyle, Tom Parsons and Aidan O’Shea. If Cluxton raises the Sam Maguire the debate will start wondering if this present Dublin team is better than the Kerry team of the 70s and 80s. Which team do you the readers think is the better?

KERRY MINORS Best of luck to the Kerry minors as they bid for fourin-a-row of All-Ireland titles. It has never been done before so there is history in the making if they can beat Derry, who defeated Dublin in the semi-final. Kerry have won all of their games by big scores and I believe they are as good as their results show. Derry will be the best team they will meet, but I expect the Cup to be residing in Fossa for the winter.

18 ALL-IRELANDS When it comes to All-Ireland medals you think of Henry Shefflin, Ogie Moran, Pat Spillane and Paudie O’Shea, but no one compares to Rena Buckley. Captain of the Cork camogie team on Sunday last she won her 18th All Ireland.

HURLING TITLE Kerry won the Under 21 B hurling All Ireland defeating Wicklow 2-12 to 2-8 at Semple Stadium. Shane Conway and Maurice O Connor were the goal scorers. Inset: Dr Crokes’ Gavin White tackled by Kenmare Shamrocks’ Kevin O’Sullivan.

Rampant Celtic Smash Dingle As Athletic Stutter The Hoops are off to a flyer but the reigning champions have plenty of room for improvement, writes Killarney Athletic’s Adam Moynihan KILLARNEY CELTIC got their season off to an unbelievable start with a resounding 7-0 victory over Dingle Day Rovers on Sunday. Dingle, who won the title as recently as 2016, were expected to be very strong again this year but they were no match for Celtic on this particular occasion as the Killarney side notched seven goals without reply. Attacking midfielder Matt Keane bagged a hat trick and Wayne Sparling, Brendan Falvey, Jamie Spillane and Stephen McCarthy also found the target in a remarkable rout that sent shockwaves throughout the league. Killarney Athletic, meanwhile, made a far less spectacular start to the campaign on Friday night. We had to make do with a draw in our opening fixture as a last-minute wonder strike salvaged a point for ten-man Listowel under lights in Tralee. We went behind early on but goals from Shane Lynch and Michael O’Donoghue had us 2-1 up with time running out. Unfortunately we were just unable to hang on for the three points and we certainly have a lot of work to do ahead of our next game. Elsewhere Tralee Dynamos, who were supposedly struggling to put a team together for the new season, demolished Inter Kenmare 9-0 at home on Sunday afternoon. Shane Lowth scored five times in a comprehensive victory and speculation regarding Dynamos’ demise seems to have been a bit premature to say the least. Newly promoted Mastergeeha were unable to pick up anything from their opening round tie as they fell to a 1-0 defeat to Castleisland, Sean

Dingle were expected to be very strong but they were no match for Celtic on this particular occasion Óg O Ciardubháin with the only goal in a keenly contested affair. Down in Division 1B Ballyhar Dynamos didn’t get off to the best of starts as they lost 3-0 to Strand Road in Tralee, while East Kerry rivals QPR and CG Killarney (Cedar Galaxy) played out an exciting 3-3 draw in their first game of the 2017/18 season. Mark Reen (two) and Ciarán O’Mahony were on the scoresheet for Quarry Park but a Hubert Dziedzic hat-trick was enough to earn Cedar a share of the spoils. There are only two top-flight games scheduled for this weekend as Fenit Samphires play Tralee Dynamos in Mounthawk Park on Friday night and Killarney Celtic host Castleisland on Sunday at 11.30am.

In the Premier B, Celtic’s B team are at home to Castleisland B, while in Division 1B the Killarney Athletic Bs get their season up and running with an away fixture against Park. Both games are at 2pm. In Division 1A, Ballyhar and CG Killarney will both be hoping to secure their first wins of the season when they face off on Sunday morning. Kick-off in Ballyhar is at 11.30am.

Rugby News ... Words: Liam Murphy LAST weekend Munster hosted the Cheetahs in the second round of the new format PRO14 competition. Having comprehensively beaten Italian outfit Benneton Treviso the previous weekend in Cork, fans were looking for a better challenge from the new arrivals into the championship. Questions were being asked about the Cheetahs and the Southern Kings – the two teams which joined the PRO14 this season. As they were unceremoniously dropped from the Super 14 championship last summer. With the number of South African teams in the Super 14 dropping from 6 to 4, the two clubs were said to be exploring “other international competition opportunities” with the PRO12 looking like the winner. The new format has divided opinion but an increase in matches can’t be a bad thing, especially for the likes of Munster who will want to challenge in the European Cup

the Southern Kings and Cheetahs may not add much to the championship. Both have lost both opening rounds and Munster beat the Cheetah’s in an 8-try rout at Thomond Park on Saturday night, winning on a scoreline of 51 points to 18. Alex Wootton scored four tries in a poor match. Munster won’t lose the run of themselves given the previous weeks results but all eyes will turn to Swansea and next Saturday’s match to see if the lads can pull off a good result against a tougher opponent. Next Saturday Munster are away to the Ospreys at the Liberty Stadium. The Ospreys will surely provide the stiffest challenge yet for Rassie’s men. With the likes of Earls, Murray and Zebo yet to return, competition will be fierce for places. A good start to what will hopefully be a successful season for the Red Army. this season. However, if results so far are anything to go by,

Sport Mark Greene

Scotts Lakers guard Mark Greene talks to Adam Moynihan about his time in the States, his new teammates and Saturday’s big tip-off How are preparations going for the new season? All is going well. Still a bit of work to be done but we’re moving in the right direction. What are your thoughts on the season opener against the Dublin Lions on Saturday? Do you know much about them? I wouldn’t know much about the Dublin Lions but at this point now we’re focused on our own performance more than anything. How important is it to have National League basketball back in Killarney? I think it’s great for the town. There’s a good buzz around it and the support has been great. Hopefully that will continue into Saturday night and throughout the season’s home games. And hopefully the results will follow as well. A few questions about your teammates… Who would you least like to get stuck in a lift with? If I got stuck in a lift I’d probably try and take a nap and the only one who would prevent that would be Shane Horgan, so I’d have to go with him. Who’s the best at Tinder? My money would be on Con O’Mahony. Dark horse there. Who’s the biggest moaner? I’d be in contention. Who’s the worst-dressed? I’ll take a spin on that and say that for the most well-groomed man on the team Con O’Mahony and John Brosnan seem to be having a battle. Who spends the most time in the gym? Andrew Fitz. It’s fairly applaudable the shape he’s in for his age. He’s still playing away at a top level. If you could bring back one ex-player to line out for your club this year, who would it be? I hear Pádraig Lucey is back in town. He’s a big boy and he has the frame so it’d be nice to see him back in a St Paul’s jersey. Who’s the best player you’ve ever played with? A lad called Andrey Semenov. I played with him in the States. He’s a 6’9’’ Russian and he could do everything: shoot, take it off the dribble… He could do absolutely anything you wanted him to do. Who’s the best athlete you’ve ever played with? I’d have to go with another guy from the States, Chip Artis. The man had 40+ inch vertical. He could literally touch the top of the backboard. Throw it anywhere near the rim and he’s finishing it. Who was your toughest ever opponent? Probably the most enjoyable battles I’ve had

down throughout the years have been with Jason Quirke in Tralee. Another lad I played against was Austin Freeman. He was a Georgetown commit at the time and he went on to play four years there. He was probably the toughest player I’ve ever had to guard. If you had to transfer to another local club, who would it be? I wouldn’t transfer to a Kerry team. I’d have to go further afield. It’s probably a bad time to ask anyway with the season starting on Saturday! [laughs] Well, I’ve been out of the game for six years now and I had plenty of time to play for other teams in Kerry but I just wouldn’t do it. I couldn’t see myself in Tralee, Killorglin or Castleisland colours. It just wouldn’t happen. What’s your proudest sporting moment? The final year of our under 16 team. We had myself and Philip (O’Connor) and Shane Horgan was coaching us. We won the All-Ireland that year and we won pretty much every tournament we entered. We went to the States as well in the summer and got to play in a tournament over there. It was the most enjoyable year in sports that I’ve ever had. And the most embarrassing? The first few months when I went to play in the States. Just trying to get acclimatised and get up to speed… I remember my sister Michelle came over and even she noticed a marked difference in me. I wasn’t playing my own game. That was probably the toughest, most embarrassing period I’ve ever had in the game of basketball. If you had to compare yourself to a professional basketballer, who would it be? Grant Hill. Unfulfilled potential! If you could go for a drink with any three sportspeople, living or dead, who would they be? Michael Jordan and Roger Federer just to see the mind of a champion. And George Best for when Michael and Roger go home early. What are your five favourite sports in order? I can only pick four so basketball is No. 1 and 2. Then tennis, rugby and soccer. Is there another sport you haven’t tried that you think you’d be good at? Tennis. What’s the best sporting moment of all time? The 2006 NBA Finals. Dwyane Wade leading the Miami Heat back from 0-2 down against Dallas. In the last four games he averaged around 40 points and eight rebounds. He was just phenomenal.

Do you have any nicknames? Unky Mark is the most popular one now with the three nieces. Do you have any superstitions? No. Not superstitious in the slightest. If I saw a ladder down the street I’d walk under it just so I didn’t have to make the extra effort to walk around it. Is there an app on your phone you couldn’t live without? YouTube. It’s great to keep up with the basketball. Who’s the best man for the banter in the team WhatsApp group? Shane Horgan definitely. Firing shots the whole time. What’s your most-used emoji?

What’s your favourite song right now? Anything by London Grammar. I’m fairly addicted to them at the moment. What would you sing at karaoke? I had a staff night there in Switzerland last year and I ended up singing LA Woman by The Doors at a karaoke bar. I butchered it so I’d have to go for round two and see if I could do any better. Who’s the most famous person in your phone? The mother! Had to give her a shout out, Adam. Of course! Who would play you in a movie about your life? It might take a Kerry man to play a Kerry man so I’ll go with Michael Fassbender. I don’t know if he’d have the athleticism but we could work on that! And last one… Can you tell me a joke? What’s the difference between God and Bono? I don’t know. God doesn’t wander around Dublin thinking he’s Bono. Good one! Thanks Mark. All the best on Saturday. Thanks Adam. Hope to see everyone down at the Aura at 7.30!

KILLARNEY ATHLETIC AFC celebrated their double-winning success in the Kerry District League in style on Saturday night. Killarney Racecourse was the venue, just a stone’s throw from where it all began at the Half-Moon field provided by benefactor John McShain 52 years before. The action kicked off with a warm welcome for Don Harrington from Huddersfield, club founder and president, and his wife’s family, including nieces Máiréad (and husband Michael), Áine and nephew Pádraig. Also in attendance were local public representatives Junior Minister of State for Transport, Tourism and Sport Brendan Griffin, Senator Paul Coghlan and Mayor of Kerry, John Sheahan. The Kerry District League was represented by Seán

Paudie O’Connor and Kerrie Beckett present Shane Lynch with the Sean O’Connor/Martin Beckett Memorial Perpetual Cup Player of the Year Award. Also included are team managers Alan Brady and Stuart Templeman.

O’Keeffe, chairman, along with Tadhg Brosnan, vice-chairman of the Schoolboys/girls League. A crowd of close to 200 club supporters in many guises – current and former players, managers, officers, parents, sponsors and all-round supporters – took their seats just in time to witness the irrepressible Mike Milner and his bagpipes lead the victorious team through to the dining room to rapturous applause. After a sumptuous meal, provided by Kingdom Catering, the formal proceedings began. Don Harrington and Máiréad Murphy were on hand to present Gerardine Nagle with the Monica Harrington Memorial Cup Killarney Athletic AFC Club Person of the Year for her impressive contribution as club

and county Child Welfare Officer, Vice-Chairperson of the Kerry District League, along with her involvement with the elite Kerry Under 17 team, travelling with them and looking after their welfare. Chairman Mike O’Shea presented Joe Daly with the Donal Brosnan Memorial Cup Killarney Athletic AFC Club Person of the Year for his long-term service as vice-chairman, club coach and committed club man. Kerrie Beckett and senior talisman Paudie O’Connor stepped up to present Shane Lynch with the Sean O’Connor/Martin Beckett Memorial Perpetual Cup Player of the Year Award. Shane made a major contribution to the senior team’s success with a number of impressive performances, including a goal in the 3-0 Greyhound Cup final win.

Killarney Rugby Club Family Day This Saturday

THE weather may have played spoilsport last weekend, resulting in the postponement of Killarney Rugby Club’s family day. But never fear, the show will go on, with the fun event rescheduled to take place this Saturday, at Aghadoe, between 11am and 2pm. Singapore under the Spotlight THE F1 title fight resumes this weekend under the lights of the Marina Bay Street Circuit in Singapore, a circuit that has been the domain of Sebastian Vettel in recent years and with this track expected to play to Ferrari’s strengths this weekend after successive Mercedes triumphs by Lewis Hamilton in Spa and Monza, this is Vettel’s best chance to fight back. Vettel has won four of the last six Singapore Grands Prix. However, into the mix is Red Bull’s Daniel Ricciardo, who’s been a front row starter and runner-up finisher at Singapore in recent years, and who shaded Rosberg all the way to the flag last year. A win for him – or teammate Max Verstappen – this weekend could mix it up in the championship chase with the Red Bulls suited to this circuit. Hamilton leading the title fight by three points over Vettel with his second straight win last time

out in Monza keeping the lead this weekend will depend on how he responds to some tough races over the last two years and a car not suited to this circuit. Behind the scenes in F1 sometimes makes bigger headlines than the main show and this week is no different with Toro Rosso’s Carlos Sainz switching to Renault possibly even before the end on the season. This is in part a sweetener for his current team to give up their Renault engine contract to free up Renault to supply McLaren with engines for 2018 and Honda who have a big budget and small horsepower then can switch to Toro Rosso who will become a development bed for Honda. McLaren Renault then may have enough to convince Fernando Alonso to stay with the team for next season. A likely outcome with little other options for the two-time world champion.

phen O’Brien and Sam Buckley. MEK kept their heads up and fought hard. Five minutes into the second half and LB Rovers went 5:0 up. Then, our fortune turned: a penalty for a tackle on Sam Griffin in the box was taken and scored in top corner by Eddie Moroney. 5:1, the comeback was on!!! The ball crossed dangerously into LBRovers box was finished off by one of their own players who headed it into the net for 5:2. More chances came and went until Sam Buckley took a shot from outside the box that made its way into the corner of the goal. 5:3! Soon after, as the ball was volleying around the box, Eddie volleyed it into the top corner! 5:4! The game was on! Shortly after another chance taken by Eddie shot with his left foot into top corner 5:5, all square until LB Rovers were awarded a free kick and scored to go ahead 6:5. Again, in the dying minutes of the game LB Rovers kicked one across the box that trickled into the back of the net 7:5 to LB Rovers. What an entertaining match especially in the second half. The Irish match wasn’t a patch on it for passion and never say die attitude! Hard luck but well done on staying with it! Many thanks and congratulations on winning in the end to Eoin O’ Mahony and his team for a great game. Also, many thanks to the referee who did a great job.

On The Ball | Monday 5.30pm Dr. Crokes

3 -20 Kenmare Shamrocks 2 – 20 - After Extra Time. In a very exciting game (sometimes too exciting), we ran out winners 3-20 to 2-20, after extra time. The teams finished 2-16 each in normal time. While this was a contest that neither side deserved to lose, we got our heads in front in extra time because of our greater experience. We had the advantage of the very strong breeze in the first half and while our mentors would have been happy with our tally of 2-11 at the interval, they would not have been happy with our defending as we conceded two goals and four points in this first thirty minutes. As it was very hard to score when playing into the strong wind one wondered if our seven points lead would be enough to carry the day. It was nip and tuck in the first ten minutes of the 2nd half each side scoring three points. We would have been happy at this stage as we still had held on to our seven points lead. Kenmare had a purple patch in the next eighteen minutes as they sent over eight points without reply to go into a point lead. Colm Cooper equalised in the 29th minute with a free from a very difficult angle. Gavin White had a point a minute later to put us a point in front, as we went into injury time. Our opponents however did not capitulate but went down the field and sent over the equaliser to send us into extra time. I don’t think Kenmare had any wide in the second half. Our opponents had two points at the beginning of extra time (they had the strong breeze at their back in this half). The defining moment of the game came in the fifth minute of extra time when substitute Ambrose O’Donovan had a Crokes goal and this was the only other score in this ten minutes. This gave us a one point lead at the interval in extra time. Despite having the elements at our back in the second half of extra time and a one point lead we had to fight hard for victory. The teams exchanged points on two occasions in the first five minutes of the second period but we finished the stronger with points from Daithi Casey and substitute Tony Brosnan. We had nine scorers on the day. LOTTO: 10, 14, 20,21. Jackpot €3600 one winner Mary Mc Sweeney from Tomies. Next draw Sunday 17th of September in The Speakeasy. Jackpot €3000.

Killarney Legion

KERRY MINORS: The very best of luck to Cian Gammell in this weekend’s All Ireland Minor Football final vs Derry in Croke Park. Cian has cemented his place in the team throughout the campaign. It would cap off a marvelous 18 months for Cian having already won 2 Hogan Cup titles with St Brendan’s College and being involved in last year’s All Ireland minor winning panel. Club member Chris Flannery is the team’s physical trainer and no doubt he will have the team in prime physical condition. And not forgetting team manager Peter Keane who has yet to lose a game in his role. Here’s hoping the record holds for another day.

DATES FOR YOUR DIARY: On Friday October 13th, we are holding our Annual Golf Classic in the superb Killarney Golf and Fishing Club. Sean Murphy is the superman behind our biggest fundraiser and he is currently busy finalizing details for the big day. The following Friday, October 20th, we will be holding our now Annual Mass. Last years was a great celebration with young and old all present. There’s more to a club than the onfield activities and it provides members with an opportunity to mix afterwards with tea, coffee and light refreshments served afterwards. Every member is welcome. U13 BOYS: Our U13 boys had a busy week competing in the East Kerry League and also participating in the prestigious Lee Strand Invitational Tournament in Connolly Park. While results may not have gone their way the performances were excellent and this age group affords players, who may not have played regularly at U14 level, valuable game time which can only aid their ongoing development. GIRLS UPDATE: Our 16 girls have qualified for the East Kerry League final after an excellent week in Direen. They took advantage of 2 home games vs Glenflesk and Laune Rangers to make it through to the decider and they now await the playing of some back game to find out their opponents. Legion U14 girls continued their East Kerry campaign last Sunday evening at home to Scartaglen. The game proved to be a very tight affair with scores hard to come. In what was a very entertaining game, Scartaglen won on a score line of 2-10 to 2-7. U14 girls also played a very entertaining and competitive game against Glenflesk midweek with which showed some excellent performances by some of the younger members of the panel in particular. Next up for u14 girls is an East Kerry game and a trip to Milltown/Listry on Sunday evening next. The U12 girls had a tough battle vs Kilcummin before eventually going down by 2-8 to 0-7. They now continue the league on a round Robin format with games vs Kilcummin and Laune Rangers. LOTTO: Numbers were 6,9,12,24. No winner. Jackpot now €14,500, Draw on Sunday September 17th.
