Concerns over potential sale of St Mary of the Angels There's huge concern this week about the future of much loved care facility St Mary of the Angels when it was revealed that national disability and mental health service providers St John of Gods faces debts of €32.5 million. | By Sean Moriarty St John of Gods runs the Beaufort facility which provides living and education facilities to Kerry adults with special needs - but shocked members of the St Mary of the Angels Parents and Relatives Association have hit out saying action must be taken to avoid the move. “St Mary’s is as much a part of Kerry as the National Park,” chairman Jack Fitzpatrick told Killarney Advertiser. “It was gifted to St John of Gods by the Franciscan Sisters, this was done to protect the future of the service in Kerry and now there is a risk it could be sold. St John of Gods, like every charity in the country are severely underfunded and that is why they find themselves in this situation. The title [of the property] is with St John of Gods and following the full letter of the law they could sell it.”
St Mary of the Angels has been run by St John of Gods since the Franciscan Missionaries of the Divine Motherhood Religious Order handed over the facility in 2005. The national charity revealed earlier this month that it faces massive debts and that it may have to sell some of its assets. St John of Gods said last September it would be ceasing the majority of its services due to its financial funding crisis and that it would transfer responsibility to the Health Service Executive (HSE). Two years ago the Franciscan Missionaries of the Divine Motherhood Religious Order sold 110-acre farm adjacent to the
care centre. The land was bought by legendary London-Kerry construction supremo Dan Tim O’Sullivan who has direct family connections to the care facility. He made the move to prevent it from falling into the hands of developers. The farm was originally donated to the Franciscan Missionaries of the Divine Motherhood Religious Order by the Doyle family in the 1960s after their only daughter joined the Order. The Order decided to sell the land to fund the retirement of its nuns with the sale of the farm which was handled by Killarney auctioneer, Tom Spillane in July 2019.
Kenmare Place set for first outdoor dining pods | By Sean Moriarty Outdoor dining pods similar to those found in major European cities are set to be introduced to Killarney town centre in a matter of weeks. The proposed pods were revealed to elected members and officials of Killarney Municipal District at a special online meeting yesterday (Thursday) afternoon. The Killarney Advertiser understands the first of the pods will be put in Kenmare Place which is currently closed to traffic as part of the 'Safe Streets' plan. Funding will come from the recently announced €16.6 million announced under the Regional Economic Driver and Destination programme, which was exclusive-

The pods are part of the Public Realm plan that is set to be signed off by elected members during the meeting. Several more pods are also in the pipeline across the town but their location has yet to be revealed.
First vaccines for Killarney Centre | By Michelle Crean The Killarney Vaccination Centre is to open for the very first time today (Friday) to administer vaccines but by appointment only for people from Cohort 4 and those aged 60 to 69. It was hoped that the centre would open earlier this week but concerns over the AstraZeneca vaccine meant changes to the plan. Appointments in Kerry were cancelled this week and the HSE said that they will contact those affected. In their statement the HSE added that the only members of the public scheduled for vaccination in the public vaccination centres to date have been some people from Group 4. "This has also allowed us to prepare the centres for when the rollout reaches a point when we are vaccinating the wider population by age. Until then, the centres will be used as and when needed to vaccinate other groups from the Government Vaccine Allocation Groups. They will not be used on a continual basis until we are further into the programme and are vaccinating large groups by age." Yesterday (Thursday) the online registration system for vaccinations for those aged 65-69 was opened.
Two serious assaults reported in Killarney | By Sean Moriarty Killarney Gardaí are investigating two separate serious assaults that took place in the town in recent weeks. The first one, an alleged sexual assault, took place a few weeks ago but was only reported on Friday last. The alleged attack took place in the grounds of the Church of the Resurrection on Park Road. “It was only reported a week later after the victim attended a sexual assault treatment unit,” Superintendent Flor Murphy told the Killarney Advertiser. “We sealed off the area and the scene was examined.” In the early hours of last Thursday morning a rough-sleeper was assaulted on Mission Road. The man suffered a broken nose in what Superintendent Murphy said was “an unprovoked attack”.

MOUNTAIN RUNNER: Joe O'Leary is growing increasingly annoyed at the amount of litter left by locals in the National Park. Photo: Valerie O'Sullivan
DUMPING: Illegal dumping and littering in Mangerton this week.
EXCLUSIVE
“Crazy amount" of litter discarded in National Park Well-known local mountain runner Joe O’Leary has expressed his concern at the growing amount of litter in Killarney National Park. | By Sean Moriarty
EXCLUSIVE
The elite mountain runner is best-known for his long distance international events, including finishing in the 2019 Ultra-Trail du Mont-Blanc, a 160km race that crosses the French, Italian and Swiss Alps after 28 hours of non-stop running. Current travel restrictions have put a stop to his international events and once the 5km restriction was lifted on Monday he returned to areas of the National Park
that he had not seen in months but said he was left “disgusted” at the “crazy amount’ of litter that has been discarded by irresponsible walkers. He is blaming locals as tourists are unlikely to be in the Park during current restrictions. “You don’t see this anywhere else, you don’t see it in England or France,” he told the Killarney Advertiser. The Ardaneanig man says he picks up litter when he can and even on Monday,
when the 5km restriction was lifted, he ran 3kms out of his way to return to a pile of discarded coffee cups. “It messed up my run, it really annoyed me,” he added. “I picked it up, but it is the wrong message. The people that do this, when they return a few days later they see it's gone and that only encourages them to drop it again.” Joe has highlighted another issue on the popular Moll’s Gap cycling route. “There is a section along the Moll’s Gap road, if you time how long it takes to drink a cup of coffee, right at that point you will find several empty coffee cups thrown there. I can’t understand why disposable cups are even being sold near the Nation-
al Park, and it is adults and not children doing this – children don’t drink coffee.” He says the further up the mountain he goes the less chance there is of finding litter. “Those that are into the mountains respect them and they don’t leave any trace,” he said. “But in the National Park, it is the once a week walkers, and they are locals, we don’t have visitors now, that are doing this. It cracks me up, it really annoys me.” Meanwhile Cllr Donal Grady has also condemned the recent increase in the dumping of household waste in the Killarney area. Earlier his week, while on a daily walk near Mangerton he discovered bags of household rubbish dumped in a secluded area near the beauty spot. “It certainly is locals doing this,” he told the Killarney Advertiser. “It is time to start naming and shaming people. We are not strict enough and the fines need to be bigger.”
No progress on town GAA fixtures to be centre CCTV scheme announced Monday | By Sean Moriarty Plans to provide CCTV cameras for Killarney Town centre and Ballyspillane remain on the long-finger despite partial funding being released by the Department of Justice and Equality. There have been calls for CCTV in the wider Killarney area since 2018 but the plan has yet to be progressed. It is hoped that three separate schemes, one each in the inner town centre, outer town centre and Ballyspillane will come on stream once all of the formalities are completed. These include the appointment of an independent security expert to review the scheme's designs and clarification from the Data Protection Office on how the scheme may be implemented. The initial cost of the scheme was priced at €160,000 and the recent grant announcement covers €47,877 of this cost.
“There have been significant changes in the requirements of Data Protection elements of such schemes in recent years, following the introduction of the GDPR and the Data Protection Act 2018, and recommendations arising from the Audits of CCTV in Local Authorities and An Garda Síochána,” a Council official explained. “In addition, the technology to be utilised has also changed in the period and it will be useful to assess the technological advances to provide for the best specifications for the project.” Another stumbling block centres on who is responsible for the management of the data captured by CCTV cameras. There are continuing discussions between the Gardaí nationally and the Local Authority sector about whether Gardaí will become Joint Data Controllers for Community CCTV schemes. “This will also be an important development as it will provide Gardaí with direct operational access to the new systems,” added the official.
| By Sean Moriarty Fitzgerald Stadium will learn on Monday what matches it will host during this year’s Munster Football Championship. The GAA is set to announce the championship draw at 7.30am Monday during RTE Radio 1’s Morning Ireland programme. Kerry will face either Clare, Waterford or Limerick in the opening round which is scheduled for June 26 and 27. The venue for this match will also be announced on Monday. If Kerry succeed in Round One, they will face either of last year’s Munster finalists in the semi-final stage and if they draw Cork that match will certainly be played in the Killarney stadium. If they don’t succeed in Round One it is highly possible that Fitzgerald Stadium won’t host any championship match this season. “The Munster Senior Football Champi-
onship is a knock-out open draw. Four teams are in the pot for the quarter-finals – Kerry, Clare, Limerick, and Waterford,” said a GAA statement. “The two quarter-final winners will advance to the semi-finals where an open draw will pit them against either defending champions Tipperary or Cork." The potential Cork v Kerry Munster clash in Killarney will mark the first time since 2017 that two sides meet at Munster championship level in the local stadium.

Schools to benefit from Lions Club tech fund | By Michelle Crean
SWAP: Uniforms will be swapped for club colours today (Friday) for the St Brendan's College ‘Different Clubs, Same Struggles’ fundraiser. Students to swap uniforms for club colours
School students will today (Friday) ditch the uniform and instead opt for their club colours for a fundraiser which has a very important message. | By Michelle Crean
A concept by St Brendan's College students, they're asking all in the school to take part in their ‘Different Clubs, Same Struggles’ fundraiser. The Transition Year Young Social Innovators (YSI) class are taking part in the virtual Speakout Week across Ireland. In recent months they have been working hard to promote their Speakout video which aims to break the stigma surrounding boy's mental health in Irish society. The fundraising day is in aid of Pieta House, as well as Nathan's Walk Killarney, a charity set up by local woman Marie O'Carroll in memory of her son Nathan who died at the age of 14, and was a past student of the school. The charity raises vital funds for mental
health services in Killarney, a service which has never been more needed due to the current pandemic. "It will be a day when as a school we all come together and acknowledge, that although we may come from different parishes, we are all united in our mission to break the stigma in society and help the boys in our community realise that ‘It’s Ok Not To Feel Ok’," teacher Niamh Sheehy told the Killarney Advertiser. "The school community also intends to take part in this year's Nathan’s Walk Darkness into Light on May 8, a powerful event, which gives the gift of hope to people affected by suicide and self harm." Follow the lad's journey on their Instagram page: Sem Against Stigma where you can also watch their very poignant short film.
A kind-hearted local group who assist various groups and individuals have done it again - this time helping students have better access to technology. Given the difficult year which saw students switch to online learning, Killarney Lions Club knew that this might have a financial consequence for some families. So, they opted to donated €750 to each of the three main local secondary schools, St Brigid’s Presentation, Killarney Community College and St Brendan’s College, which will provide equal access to information technology for all students. President of Killarney Lions Club John Fuller said that they are very aware of how young peoples’ experience of school has changed, thus putting extra pressure on some families. "We hope this support will enable second-level schools in Killarney to help students and families who may be disadvantaged by what has happened over the past year." Principal at St Brendan’s Sean Coffey outlined how the monies would assist the strategic support of a number of students

in accessing the curriculum. “Appropriate devices have become key for engagement in education by all students," he said. "This assistance will allow targeted support to be delivered where it is most needed.” Principal at Killarney Community College, Stella Loughnane, highlighted the need now, more than ever, to provide education through new technologies. “Schools now function in a very different space to that of only a few short years ago. ICT enhances all subject areas and provides schools an opportunity to keep students engaged in their learning during these uncertain times.” Róisín Moore, Principal at St Brigid’s also welcomed the news, stating that the financial support offered by the Killarney Lions Club will further strengthen the school’s ability to support students whose engagement with remote learning was compromised due to difficulty accessing devices. “The school provided in excess of 40 devices to students during the period of school closure. However, some of these devices are reaching end of life. The Lions funding will enable us to address this."
Michael Fassbender’s Hollywood legacy will continue in Killarney thanks to a new acting school he hopes to open on New St. His father, Josef Fassbender has lodged a planning application with Kerry Coun-
ty Council to convert their property on New St into an acting school. The building, a protected structure known as West End House, is where Fassbender Snr operated a restaurant for many years. In 2018 it was converted into a beauty salon and has been rented to local beauticians since then.

Killarney author to feature in international book festival Following her recent multi-book deal with a major publisher, Killarney author Olivia Howe, writing under the name Olivia Hope, will be one of the writers on the popular Getting Published information day this month.
Ryan takes on 200k in 28 days! He may not have the actual view of the Ring of Kerry but that isn't stopping one teen from walking its circumference - by taking on 200k all within 28 days! | By Michelle Crean Ryan Looney (13) who has Autism, decided to take on the huge challenge to help raise funds for his school. Currently in the Oak Class in St. Francis Special School, Ryan, from Quarry Cross, Gneeveguilla, wanted to raise money to help fund private therapies such as speech and language therapy carried out by Kerry Speech and Language Clinic who offer 1:1 SLT sessions. And Ryan is so dedicated to his goal that he hasn't missed a day's walk, accompanied by his mom Brigitta, since the Easter holidays. What's even better is that Ryan is getting huge support online through his GoFundMe and Facebook pages 'Ryan's Virtual Ring of Kerry Walking Challenge'. "Ryan has been walking non stop all through his Easter Holidays, he has been walking over 10k a day and now
has over 160k done," his mom Brigitta told the Killarney Advertiser. "As he is back in school now and busy, he is doing the rest of the challenge in the evenings with smaller walks of 3km and 4km. He hopes to have it completed by next week. He loves being outdoors and it's something different, and we've been blessed with the weather." Normally the school has an annual golf classic fundraiser organised by the SFSS Parent's Autism Support Group. Their last one, in 2019, raised €19,000. However, with events postponed due to the ongoing pandemic, fundraising has become harder, and this inspired Ryan and his mom take on the challenge. "A friend had the Conqueror App and was walking to Rome virtually, so we decided to do the Ring of Kerry. It maps out the walk and once completed he will get a medal in the post. We also set up a GoFundMe page with a target of €1,000 and it's now at almost €3,000," Brigitta added. "We have a Facebook page set up 'Ryan's Virtual Ring of Kerry Walking Challenge' and people are sending me pics as they are walking to support Ryan with #TEAMRYAN which is lovely, and he loves seeing them."
This year Cork World Book Fest goes online and will virtually welcome Irish and international writers to Cork for an extravaganza of books, writers, readers and a guide to getting published. Seven years ago Olivia pitched her first children’s book story at a Getting Published event in Cork City Library to literary scout Vanessa Fox O’Loughlin who not only writes crime fiction as Sam Blake, but is also the founder of The Inkwell Group publishing consultancy and the hugely popular national writing resources website Writing.ie. This was the turning point of Olivia's writing career as Vanessa took her book to the London Book Fair where she met the head of the Darley Andersen Literary Agency's Children's Division, Clare Wallace. Clare now represents Olivia who has three books on the way with a major publisher and many more in the pipeline. Olivia now works for The Inkwell Group critiquing picture books and teaches creative writing, as well as working for Siamsa Tíre as an associate artist and with the Irish Arts Council on the Crea-

Vanessa will also be holding workshops with published authors and literary agents on how to get published, pitching to agents and perfecting the all-important first chapter. The Getting Published day is part of a week-long series of events. Visit Cork World Book Fest for more information www.corkworldbookfest.eventbrite. com or www.corkworldbookfest.com.
Legion’s plan to record the stories of the club | By Sean Moriarty Legion GAA hopes to capture some of the stories behind the club as part of their ‘One Good Club’ campaign. Initially set up by the ladies arm of the club to promote mental health the project has grown to include all sections. Earlier programmes included online quizzes and fitness classes as well as 'Far and Away' online celebration of members at home and abroad on St Patrick’s Day. The latest phase of the ‘One Good Club’ scheme is to invite members to record short (20 or 30 second) videos and to tell short stories about the club. The ‘Tell Me Something’ series was launched this week and club officials are encouraging all past and current members to send a clip of their club story. “It can be funny, serious facts, trivia or an interesting story on the club,” Le-

Reeks District launch ambitious marketing plan A number of Kerry businesses and individuals have come together to help fund an ambitious marketing and promotional plan that aims to boost tourism and economic development over the next three years. Funds raised by the 20-plus member group in the Reeks District, which spans from Inch Beach to Glenbeigh and includes the Ireland’s highest mountain Carrauntoohil, alongside the subscriptions of the tourism organisation’s members, will lead to an investment of €500,000 by the end of 2024 to help fund activities that promote the region on both the domestic and international markets and sustainably increase visitor numbers to the area. Marketing of ‘shoulder season’ visits will be one particular focus of the campaigns. Like many other regions, it has suffered due to the effects of the COVID-19 crisis, and the cash injection is set to help build on the pre-pandemic success of the region following its 2018 re-brand from Mid Kerry. “We would like to thank the local busi-
ness owners for their belief in the Reeks District project," Chair of the Reeks District Jens Bachem said. "We look forward to working with them, Kerry County Council, South Kerry Development Partnership and other groups to help us reach further successes. Every region has been hit hard by COVID-19 and the Reeks District is no different, but if people pull together, a huge amount can be achieved. While our plans are ambitious, we believe we have a track record of producing strong results against the odds. It is no more ambitious than Reeks District being named one of Rough Guides Top Six Destinations in the World to Visit in 2019, just 18 months from launch.” Those looking for more information on how they can support the Reeks District can visit www.reeksdistrict.com.

FUNDRAISER: Jenny McCarthy is organising a fundraiser in memory of her mom Kay.
Fundraiser launched in memory of Kay | By Michelle Crean The daughter and sister-in-law of Killarney woman Kay McCarthy who sadly lost her cancer battle four years ago have organised a fundraiser in her memory. Jenny McCarthy and her sister-in-law Aoife Murphy plan a '3k for Kay' for the Irish Cancer Society (ICS) next week running on April 24 and 25, to mark what would have been Kay's 60th birthday and anniversary respectively. Participants are asked to wear blue, which was Kay's favourite colour, and take on a 3k challenge over the few days. "It's coming up to mom's 60th birthday on April 24 and her anniversary on the 25, and we had this in mind," Jenny told the Killarney Advertiser. "I also have two videos that will be on social media next week, one documenting mom's cancer journey and one with over 15 families that have lost someone to cancer who are using the video to raise awareness while remembering their loved one. Singer Ashley Kerins from the Tralee Road did the background music. They'll be going up next week on the Little Steps Big Futures social media pages." Hotels enjoy summer booking surge | By Sean Moriarty Killarney hoteliers are predicting a good summer following a surge in bookings in recent weeks. The latest industry survey by the Irish Hotels Federation (IHF) shows early signs that hotels in certain parts of the country are beginning to see an uplift in bookings for July and August.
The South West region reports a 35% hotel occupancy for July and 33% for August. This is above the national average of 23% for July and 21% for August and a slight improvement on the March average which reported booking levels of just 22% for July and 20% in August nationally. The surge in bookings came after last

The IHF survey was carried out on April 6-8 and the results are based on the response of 330 properties with 32,850 guest rooms spread across the country.

Waiver on business rates for 2021 | By Sean Moriarty Killarney businesses who have not been able to open this year as a result of the pandemic will be entitled to credit on their business rates payable to Kerry County Council. Business owners in the town, especially those involved in the hospitality sector, were left shocked this week when they received their annual bill. However, president of the Killarney Chamber of Tourism Commerce, Niall
Kelleher, confirmed to the Killarney Advertiser that the rates will be credited. Certain businesses that meet Government criteria will be entitled to a waiver on rates payable between January 1 and May 31 this year as they have been unable to operate due to the pandemic. “Kerry County Council is obliged by law to send out rate letters every year,” he told the Killarney Advertiser. “The commercial rates bill must be issued in the amount of the full rate bill demand and does not reflect the 2021 Commercial Rates Bill Wavier Scheme.”

Charity book on Gap of Dunloe still available
A book that traces the history of the Gap of Dunloe has raised a staggering €5,000 for Marymount Hospice in Cork – and there are still copies of the book available to buy. | By Sean Moriarty Mary Coffey Coghlan’s 'Echoes of Dunloe' tells the story of the Gap region, its people, geology, mythology and legends. Mary spent her working life as a teacher in Macroom but returned to her childhood home while recovering from a serious illness and that is when she decided to write the first comprehensive book on the area. Her family are steeped in the history and tradition of the Gap area; her great-great-grandfather built Kate Kearney's Cottage and her nephew Sean Cof-
fey now runs the famous tourist tavern. “The book was going well and earned €5,000 for Marymount during the first 12 months, but then we had COVID,” Mary told the Killarney Advertiser. The book costs €25 with all proceeds going to the Cork-based hospice. It is available locally in O’Connor’s Newsagents, Beech Road, The Dungeon Bookshop, College Street and Kate Kearney’s Cottage, Gap of Dunloe. It will also be available at the Muckross House gift shop once that reopens. Alternatively, it is available directly from Mary (plus post and packaging) by emailing: mccoghlan@hotmail.com.

Local singing Deacon raises €3,500 for Trócaire Rev Thady O’Connor, Deacon of Castleisland Parish has sold 500 copies of his new CD titled 'We need Jesus now more than ever' and has raised over €3,500 for Irish Aid charity Trócaire. The CD is selling for €5 and a limited number are still available at Castleisland Parish shop. From Killarney, local singer Thady and son-in-law Fergus O’Sullivan recorded the song to support Trócaire’s annual Lenten campaign which this year focused on people who are trapped in long-running wars, such as those affecting places such as South Sudan and Somalia. the following categories, a well-known musician, singer, dancer, storyteller in your local area or Comhaltas branch who would have knowledge of the Irish traditions and cultures down through the years, an event/activity/custom that

Thady decided to get behind Trócaire’s Lenten campaign after Trócaire warned that up to one-third of its annual donations had been put at risk after COVID-19 restrictions severely curtailed the distribution of Trócaire boxes during Lent. The charity’s Lenten Appeal launched in February but social and travel restrictions, including school closures and the suspension of Masses, meant that for the first time in almost 50 years many Kerry homes were without Trócaire boxes this year. To support the campaign go to trocaire. org. used to or still takes place in your area/ branch e.g. Rambling House, Crossroads Dancing, any one-off event e.g. concert involving well-known musicians, a book publication, a branch celebration, anniversary or commemoration. Cancer support charity, Recovery Haven Kerry, which has seen a dramatic fall in funding due to the pandemic curtailing fundraising events, this week launched their #5KMay fundraising event and are calling on the public to support them. They have joined forces with Just Giving and they're hoping to get as many of their supporters as possible to sign up for a 5k challenge during the month of May, by running, walking, rolling, swimming or cycling. The challenge can be done in one go or over the course of a few days during next month, and those taking part are then asked to donate just €5 and nomi-
nate five of their friends or family members to do the same. "As well as individual participants, businesses, schools, sports clubs and running and walking groups are also welcome to take part as a team - and you have plenty of time to get training, as you don’t have to do anything until May!" Siobhan MacSweeney, Manager of Recovery Haven said. "Like all charities, COVID-19 has placed enormous pressure on Recovery Haven Kerry’s fundraising income, so the charity is asking as many people as possible to consider being part of this new venture for 2021 and help them to continue supporting cancer patients and their families across Kerry." Anyone interested in taking part can find full details on how to sign up and donate via www.runforheroes.org.uk by searching Recovery Haven, or on all Recovery Haven’s social media channels.
Councillor votes for new dessert business | By Sean Moriarty A Kerry County Councillor is hoping locals will cast their votes, and place buns over ballots as he embarks on a new sideline career. Cllr Jackie Healy-Rae, who is elected in the Castleisland Municipal District and is a member of the Kilgarvan-based political dynasty, is set to open a new dessert and smoothie store on Scott’s Street, Killarney today (Friday). Shake, Waffle and Roll will offer a range of desserts including shakes, waffles, ice creams, smoothies, pancakes and sundaes. The new venture will create five new jobs
in town but Healy-Rae insists that he has no intention of giving up politics just yet. “Politics will always be number one, and as long as the people will have me I will be there. But there may come a time when it is not there. In politics your job is up for renewal every five years,” he told the Killarney Advertiser. “I have always been around business, I grew up around our shop and plant hire business but wanted to do something for myself. I am very thankful to Maurice O’Donoghue [of Scott’s Hotel] for his support on opening this business on Scott’s Street.” Shake, Waffle and Roll will initially open for takeaways ahead of what will be a full opening once COVID-19 restrictions are lifted.

Killarney tourism bodies “building for the future” | By Sean Moriarty The long-term future of Killarney’s reputation as an international tourism destination looks secure thanks to the promotion efforts of local industry leaders this week. The Bord Failte’s annual Meitheal showcase – now its 46th year – took place online, and was a chance to sell Ireland to 216 tourism buyers in the UK, Europe, the USA and Australia. Over 50 Kerry-based tourism businesses took part with Killarney represented by Kerry Tourism Industry Federation, the Gleneagle Hotel Group, The Brehon Hotel, The Lake Hotel, the O’Donoghue-Ring Group and the Great Southern Killarney. Meitheal is aimed at securing business for the 2022 and 2023 seasons but local representatives say there is strong interest from the UK and Central Europe. “From our group perspective it is an important platform to connect with existing clients and meet new ones. Fáilte Ireland has done well to facilitate Meitheal this year and allow the trade to focus this time on reaching out to our trade partners and exploring new opportunities. Our hotels and other businesses are well received and clients intend to continue working with us in the future,” Brian Miley, the Gleneagle Group’s Business Development Manager told the Killarney Advertiser. He added that interest in America was
not that strong but that there was no cause for concern either. “[This is] possibly due to the time difference and not being in the country in person,” he added. Patrick O'Donoghue of the Gleneagle Hotel Group attended online meetings too as part of his role as the Marketing Chairman of Kerry Tourism Industry Federation. “Meitheal is always a key networking event for the Kerry tourism industry where the hotels, attractions and activity providers have an opportunity to meet with existing and target new tour operators who are looking to place business for 2022 and 2023,” he added. “It is very much about building for the future, I'm delighted that over 50 of the Kerry tourism industry are virtually attending Meitheal this week and flying the flag for Kerry. Tourism across the world as it is is certainly keeping Kerry as a destination in the minds of these tour operators and travel agents."

Gorse fires cost Council €50k a night in wages The MacGillycuddy Reeks European Innovation Partnership Project has issued a warning on the risk of burning scrublands at this time of the year. | By Sean Moriarty The burning of vegetation is illegal between March 1 and August 31 but every year there are incidents of gorse fires in the MacGillycuddy Reeks during the month of April. However, Killarney Fire and Rescue has said that burning is allowed in certain circumstances once the criteria is followed. These include a permit process and a system of contacting a control office before burning lands or foliage. A large illegal fire in the Muckross area was brought under control on Easter Monday by the local fire service. While there was a significant drop in the number of out-of-season gorse fires reported this time last year, April 2019 was a busy period for the local fire services. Easter Monday 2019 accounted for 14 wildfires in the county but that figure reduced last year thanks to a Kerry County Council campaign and the reduced numbers of walkers in the National Park. The COVID-19 restrictions meant there was less chance of carelessly discarded cigarette butts etc. The activity has long divided opinion in rural areas. Farmers say that the burning of scrubland increases the growth of grass during the spring while conservationists warn that the practice causes smoke pollution, damages wildlife habitats and disturbs nesting birds. The MacGillycuddy Reeks European Innovation Partnership Project is calling for farmers and landowners to seek alternatives in the months ahead. The Reeks EIP project is working with a number of landowners in the Reeks area to help manage their land and in-
crease the habitat quality of the land. The landowners are being offered training in habitat awareness and management, talks are being arranged on ‘controlled burning’ as well as practical measures such as introducing suitable breeds of cattle, and controlled grazing. “We would ask all farmers to consider, before they carry out burning, if it is actually needed. In many instances burning is actually making problems worse instead of fixing them,” said EIP project manager Patricia Deane. “For example, burning stimulates the germination of buried gorse seed. So burning might in fact be helping the gorse to spread, or bare ground after a burn will encourage bracken and ferns to come in. It is worth taking some time to see what other options are available like mulching or cutting.” Kerry County Council’s fire department reported a small increase of two in the number of gorse fires it attended in January compared the same month last year. It also noted that February 10 and 11 were a particularly busy period. “The significant impact of this on our Fire Service is best outlined by referring to the 24 hour report received from our Regional Control Centre at 08:00 hrs on February 11. This was a 149 page incident report, showing that eight out of 10 of our brigades were out for much of the previous night, meaning a payroll cost to Kerry County Council of the order of €50,000,” said a Council spokesperson. “When eight out of 10 of our fire brigades are away from their bases, often in rural locations, it means that our availability to respond to other incidents is seriously hampered.”

Other Killarney links to the remote club include local MEP Sean Kelly whose uncle Fr Brian Kelly was parish priest in the area in the late 1970s and early 1980s. Fr Kelly was a legendary local GAA coach, he steered Kilcummin to their only East Kerry Championship win in 1973 and led Glenbeigh to a Mid Kerry title a few years later. “I was surprised to learn that the victory that gave my uncle the most pleasure was the Garnish wins in the 1978 and 1979 Beara Championship because it lifted the spirts of the people of the area so much,” said Mr Kelly.

Are you rushing to nowhere? So much of the motivational/productivity information out there is focused on how quickly we can accomplish or change something, and how we “need” to get this or change that right now. Urgency has taken over everything, and in many ways has also taken the place of wisdom. We tend to rush into whatever seems the fastest route to our goals and gloss over the details, and often reap the unintended consequences or hidden costs of what goes along with some faster routes. Many times, there are better, quicker ways of doing things and there is nothing wrong with pursuing those ideas and solutions. But, we’re bombarded from every side with marketing ploys and gimmicks that we don’t even realise we’ve been influenced by. When we sit back and thoughtfully analyse what we’re being told, research, and ask logical questions, we can see just how much actual facts have been twisted one way or another to benefit those trying to accomplish their own goals. It doesn’t take time or effort to see this in the media, but it does take significant effort to beat the cognitive dissonance in our own minds and accept that most things aren’t what they appear to be on the surface. The same is true of our path to health. It seems many gurus have a quick fix, a new cleanse or diet, a new way to work out that is “revolutionary” and will “fix” all your problems in six weeks. Some guru somewhere that can, for a certain sum of money, erase your years of struggles and create “a new you” in 30 days. You know the kind of hype I’m talking about; the examples are endless and ubiquitous. While there is benefit to something new and fresh, especially if it can jolt you out of deeply set habits with a renewed motivation, what we’ve seen help people the most are small, slow and steady changes over time. People tend to fall off the wagon and become overwhelmed with large changes. Most leadership books on habits will support this. One of the best ways to make a change is to focus on something incredibly small, like snacking a little less and eating a little more veggies with your meals when you
think about it, or setting a small goal of going to the gym two days a week and working on simply showing up - not even worrying about what you do when you get there, just getting through the doorway first. These kind of small changes won’t make a noticeable difference overnight, but, they will cause you to win early, and win consistently. This, in turn encourages you, and slowly, steadily builds positive habits that end up causing massive change over time. And, change that is deeply rooted and hard to revert. When you learn to add simple habits and small changes into your life over time, their effect compounds. These seemingly insignificant changes end up adding up to life-changing downstream effects and are amazing to see. Sometimes we need to separate the noise of the quick fixes and sit back and assess what’s really going on. Use the brain and wisdom you’ve been given to chart a course forward with small, well-planned, effective changes you can make over time. You’ll look back later and be amazed at how much little smart accomplishments changed you for the better. Small, incremental changes don’t sound sexy or won’t sell on magazine covers, but ask yourself how the “quick fixes” have been treating you or someone you know for the past amount of years. In my experience, I meet people all the time who are on the bandwagon and “off it” like flicking on a light switch on these “quick fixes”. If they were actually fixes, why would you ever need to “try” another? For sensible advice that works, book a free consultation with us today by visiting www.activate.ie.

Partial Capacity Benefit Question: I am getting the Invalidity Pension and I’d like to go back to work. I can’t work full-time because of my disability and this will affect my earnings. Is there any support available? ANSWER: The Partial Capacity Benefit (PCB) scheme allows you to return to work or self-employment and continue to get a social welfare payment. There is no restriction on what you can earn or the number of hours you can work. You must get written approval from the Department of Social Protection before you start work. You should also get approval from your doctor. To qualify for Partial Capacity Benefit: You must have been getting Illness Benefit (for at least six months) or Invalidity Pension. The restriction on your capacity for work must be assessed as moderate, severe, or profound by the Department of Social Protection. If it is assessed as mild, you do not qualify. When you apply, the Department of Social Protection assesses your medical condition and its restriction on your capacity for work. You get a percentage of your personal rate of Illness Benefit or Invalidity Pension payment depending on your capacity for work. If your capacity is assessed as: • Profound – you get 100% of the payment • Severe – you get 75% of the payment • Moderate – you get 50% of the payment If you are coming from Invalidity Pension, your Partial Capacity Benefit will
continue for a maximum of three years (156 weeks). However, you can apply for PCB again. You will be reassessed by the Department to determine if you qualify for the scheme. If you are coming from Illness Benefit, your Partial Capacity Benefit payment will last as long as you have an underlying entitlement to Illness Benefit. If you get Partial Capacity Benefit it may affect other secondary benefits you are getting from the Department of Social Protection. You can find out more about Partial Capacity Benefit on citizensinformation. ie. __________________________________________________ During COVID-19, you can find comprehensive integrated information online at citizensinformation.ie/covid19/ and you can get daily updates on what’s changed on Twitter at @citizensinfo. SIMPLY BEAUTIFUL Five tips to help students
Beauty - By Jill O'Donoghue

Beauty sleep is a real thing! We have all felt the benefits of a good night's sleep for the skin, so why don't we do it more often? It's so important to get a proper nights sleep as this is when the body repairs itself. You wake up with energy and in a better mood, and instantly this makes your skin look better. During sleep your skin's blood flow increases and the organs rebuild collagen and repairs damage from UV exposure, reducing wrinkles and age spots. This is why it's important to have a well-balanced diet. It's also essential to consume five fruits and vegetables a day as this gives your body essential nutrients, minerals and vitamins to repair itself as the body needs the right fuel to do this. Also, it's important not to eat too late in the evening as the body will have to spend the night digesting instead of repairing your skin. And don't forget to drink two litres of water every day. During sleep is when your face inevitably comes into contact with a pillow for at least seven hours, so try to invest in a silk pillow case or a least change it as often as possible. If you suffer from acne, change your pillow case every day. Also, cleansing your skin before bedtime is so important as it removes dirt, make-up, and any extra oils. If the skin is going to get the best chance to repair and rebuild leaving this grime on the skin while you
sleep can lead to larger pores, dry skin, rashes, acne, and ageing. Using a specific night cream can really benefit your skin too. They contain a lot of active ingredients many of which cannot be used during the day. Sothys Detox Resurfacing Overnight Cream is a fresh formulation with mandarin to suit all skin types with a high potency of vitamin C to increase the skin's luminosity, oxygenation and collagen production while at the same time managing skin with hyper pigmentation issues. Night after night this concentration of technology acts deep inside to help it erase the visible signs of daytime damage from the environment. Active ingredients also fight free radicals. Detoxifying Complex: shea polyphenols and yeast extract, boost the body's detoxification system. Extract of nasturtium rich in a-glucans creates the optimal use of cellular oxygen. Beauty sleep is a real thing! When we sleep our stress hormone cortisol goes down and our sleep hormone melatonin goes up. If you want your skin and hair to look younger and healthier before you even start your daily beauty routine - the bottom line is try to get a good night's sleep. • For more information or to book an online consultation call Jill on 064 6632966.
explore career options
The final term is an ideal time for Transition Year and Fifth Year students to focus on some detailed career exploration. At this stage of the school year you will have undertaken lots of careers work in school so you will have a good idea of the many resources online to help you with your research at this stage. The best way to approach your career exploration at this stage is to be as open as you can to the many possibilities available to you. Delve into a number of career sectors to look at the range of jobs that exist in each one. If you have a clear idea of what you might like to do after school, great, but don’t let that stop you from looking at lots of options as you may change your mind. If you don’t have an idea what you want to do at this stage don’t worry, that’s very normal. You have plenty of time to come up with ideas. My advice is start with yourself. It is likely that you have already done some self-assessment tests in school looking at your interests, skills, personality traits, aptitudes and so on. If not, you will find them on www.careersportal.ie, www.qualifax.ie, www.yooni.ie and on the Exit Entry App, which you can download to your phone. They help to get you thinking about options that might suit you but there isn’t one test that will give you the answer about what you want to do. They are a starting point in your research. Once you have an idea of career sectors that peak, delve in deeper to find out more. Explore websites that are linked to particular sectors and start following them on social media. There are lots of them but some good examples include www. languagesconnect.ie, www.smartfutures.ie, www.engineersireland.ie, and www.tourismcareers.ie. Attend virtual spring open days, taster days and career events in the colleges. There are several coming up in this term which are aimed at TY and Fifth Years. Check out the events calendar on www. qualifax.ie or www.careersportal.ie to plan ahead. Watch, listen and chat! You are spoiled for choice with the multitude of webi-

Foróige have a great selection of career information webinars in 15 different career areas during April and May so check them out on social media. Participate in online short courses which will enhance your CV and help you to get an insight into possible career options. Exit Entry has partnered with IBM and P-TECH Ireland to bring four industry-recognised digital badges which are accredited in areas such as cybersecurity and visual design. A national competition will be launched on April 19 to encourage students to complete the badges on the Exit Entry App. It also has a section with virtual work experience opportunities. MTU Crawford College Art and Design is offering a free TY Portfolio Preparation course for anyone interested in art from next Monday, April 19 to Friday 23. GARDEN MAGIC
Gardening - By Debby Looney

I love the sight of primroses For as long as I can remember I have loved the sight of primroses showing their cheery yellow smiles in the spring. And the scent of cowslips brings me back to the ‘80s, when every spring was dry and sunny. Over the last few years, following a plant show in England where I met a specialist in primrose growing, I have started collecting Primulas as I find them. There are so many different varieties, most of which grow well in our climate and soil. There are three basic groups, auriculas, which are evergreen; alpine plants, candelabras, which are deciduous or die back to a small rosette of leaves, and have flowers borne on tall stems; and finally, the primrose/polyanthus group which are the ones we are familiar with as early spring bedding. It is the first group I want to write about here. Auricula primulas are alpine plants, and as such, extremely hardy. There are some which can tolerate temperatures of -30, not something we will have to worry about. They need alpine growing conditions, the most important of which is gritty soil so that the water runs off quickly as it would on a gravelly mountainside. They will not tolerate standing in wet soil. Midday sun is also not well tolerated, auriculas prefer morning sun so do very well on an east facing site. To accommodate these foibles, auriculas have long been grown in ‘theatres’. These are tiered displays, usually against a wall which is east or north facing on which the primulas are placed in terracotta pots containing a gritty, free draining compost. In Victorian times the auricula was particularly valued, and some of these theatres were incredibly grand and ornate. Some auricula societies around the world have very impressive theatres also. So, what is it about these small plants
which have people building theatres for them? Their flowers are often described as jewels, gems, and candy, but these descriptions hardly do them justice. Within the auricula group there are sub-groups, mainly used to describe the flower colours - 'show’ has a perfectly white circle of meal, or ‘paste’ in the centre, ‘self’ which has a single solid colour radiating out from the white centre, ‘edged’ where the white paste has a black margin which feathers out, and many more – important if you are going to show your plants, but not essential to enjoying your flowers at all! There are hundreds of different cultivars, as breeding has been ongoing since the seventeenth century, and they are an addictive plant. Once you have one, it will lead to another, then you will be looking up specialist growers, and next thing you know packages are arriving from all over Europe. Most garden centres will stock hybrid seedlings which are pretty, and if you are lucky, there might be some particularly nice ones in the mix. However, they are usually a little washed out in terms of colour, and not very representative of their named cousins. It is well worth looking auriculas up on the Internet to really get an idea of what all the fuss is about. The package I am currently awaiting contains ‘Agamemnon’, dark ruby with yellow centre, ‘Minley’ white centre, pink margin feathering out to green, and ‘Brasso’ which is yellow. I really purchased this one for the name – it is the only time I will ever be buying Brasso!

SUSI grant applications for new applicants SUSI grant applications for the 2021-2022 academic year are now open for renewal for those already enrolled in courses, and will open on April 22 for new applications. Student Universal Support Ireland (SUSI) is the main financial support scheme for students studying in Ireland and abroad. Citizens Information handles many queries from parents about SUSI and advises the student applies online for the grant, not the parents, because the student is the principal contact on the application for SUSI queries and all future contact. The SUSI grant supports students in two ways; Maintenance Grants which assist with
living costs and Fee Grants which cover the cost of third level education fees for an academic year. If a student qualifies for the Maintenance Grant they will also get the Fee Grant, whereas some students will only qualify for the Fee Grant. To qualify you must meet all the conditions of the scheme. These include: Nationality Condition/Residence Condition/Means Test/Approved Course of Study/Progression/Maximum period of grant assistance. Many people ask about the progression condition. In general, grants are not available if one is repeating or attending a course that does not represent progression to a higher level. Students who change courses in first year should be aware of this.

Take part in '100k in 30 Days' this June From casual strollers to keen walkers, joggers and seasoned runners - June is the month to get those kilometres hiked up for Breast Cancer Ireland. Following the phenomenal success of last year’s '100k in 30 Days' event, organised by Louth couple Niall Carroll and Cara McAdam which raised over €1.2 million for the charity, they this week launched the 2021 event. It's open to everyone from age one to one hundred and invites participants to walk, jog, run or wheel a total of 100km (or more!) during the month of June. As an additional incentive, there are circa €30,000 worth of incredible prizes to be won throughout the event including a €3,500 family travel voucher sponsored by Connect Credit Union, five-star hotel breaks, restaurant vouchers, luxury brands and family days out. Registration for the event opened at www.100kin30days.ie yesterday (Thursday), and Niall Carroll, who originally established the event in support of his wife Cara following her breast cancer diagnosis, is urging people to register early to ensure that participation packs and the much-loved pink t-shirts arrive in good time for the event. “We’re aiming to increase participation this year to 20,000, and have full confidence that once again our ‘pink army’ from all of the island of Ireland will jump

"To have a title sponsor such as Sherry FitzGerald involved this year, with such a strong geographic footprint all across the country, is wonderful and will help us to grow the event and its reach even further in 2021. Last year saw participants from no less than 34 countries worldwide getting involved and we’re calling on everyone and their families to support us again this year, to make it our biggest and most inclusive event to date.”
Participation in the '100k in 30 Days' event is easy – simply register to take part in this family event, encourage your friends and family to do the same, then track each walk, jog or run during the month of June on your smartphone or App and upload your activity to your '100k in 30 Days' account – add an optional photo and watch your kilometres grow! Follow ongoing event updates on Instagram @100kin30days or on Twitter using the hashtags #100kin30days and #pinkarmy.
Trump’s Coca-Cola gaff proves his hypocrisy If you are going to publicly berate the manufacturer of a world-famous product it is best practice to avoid being seen as a user of the same product. Earlier this month former US President Donald Trump had called for a boycott of Coca-Cola and other major Atlanta-based multinationals. He was reacting to the State’s decision to change its voting laws – something he supported.
Under the new rule there are less days to vote in an election, there will be less voting boxes and less hours available to working voters to cast their ballot outside normal working hours. Cynics say it was all part of a Republican Party plan to control future elections. Trump famously lost the State during November’s election at a time when a record number of voters turned out to have their say. Coca-Cola, which is based in At-
At 4ft 3in (129cm) long, 'Darius' as he is known, is officially recognised as the 'World's Largest Rabbit Alive' by the Guinness World Records. He claimed the title from his mother Alice, and he was her fourth award-winning rabbit. He was stolen from his Worcestershire home on Saturday night and his distraught owner Annette Edwards has offered a £1000 reward for his return,. Posting on Twitter she pleaded for those who took Darius, a Continental Giant rabbit, to "please bring him back", adding that he is "too old to breed now". Police believe the 11-year-old rabbit was taken from its enclosure in Stoulton. "We are appealing for information following the theft of an award-winning rabbit from its home in Stoulton, Worcestershire," West Mercia Police said. lanta, hit out against the new rules, calling them “unacceptable”. Trump’s love affair with Diet Coke is legendary. He supposedly had a “red button” on his White House desk and a worker would hastily deliver a bottle of his favoured beverage. However, he was not happy at Coca-Cola’s stance on election reform. In a hastily called press conference he derided the drink's firm and called for a boycott of its products. He forgot about the bottle of Diet Coke that was sitting on his desk, partially hidden behind a telephone. This was captured by press photographers who were present and who exposed his hypocrisy.

Nuclear waste to be dumped in ocean Japan is set to release in excess of one million tonnes of radioactive water into the Pacific Ocean from the defunct Fukushima Nuclear Power Plant. Following a meeting on the matter, Cabinet ministers have said that the ocean release is the best option - however it's created tensions in the country and elsewhere with China's foreign ministry calling it "extremely irresponsible". In a statement the foreign ministry said that the move will "seriously damage
international public health and safety, and the vital interests of people in neighbouring countries". China also added that Japan should not go ahead until all stakeholder countries and the International Atomic Energy Agency are consulted. South Korea said it will step up its own radiological measuring and monitoring saying Japan's plans bring "serious concerns that the decision could bring a direct and indirect impact on the safety of our people and surrounding environment".

Rachael Blackmore makes history at Aintree Donations exceed €100k Rachael Blackmore from Co Tipperary made history on Saturday by becoming the first female jockey to win the Grand National with Minella Times. And it was a first win in the race for trainer Henry de Bromhead who not only won the race but finished second with Balko Des Flos for jockey Aidan Coleman. Blackmore and Minella Times crossed the line together at odds of 11/1, with
BoyleSports traders confirming it was a popular result for punters with turnover in the race very positive. The talented lady not only made history at the Cheltenham Festival last month by becoming the first female to win the top jockey award, but she has now won the Grand National. Her odds have plummeted into 1/100 from 1/4 that she will be crowned the RTE Sportsperson of the Year with Katie Taylor the closest rival to her in the betting at 12/1.
It wasn't a typical fundraiser but it struck such a cord that it managed to raise a whopping €106,000 for a Kerry charity. The 'Donate a Calf' event was set up for the Kerry Hospice Foundation (KHF) in memory of John McGrath who passed away from cancer in January. Sadly, John was diagnosed with terminal Oesophageal Cancer in January 2020. He was admitted to Palliative Care in University Hospital Kerry under Dr Patricia
Sheahan. His partner, North Kerry woman Erin Stack, organised the fundraiser in Listowel Mart and was totally taken aback by the phenomenal support it received. KHF said that they are "hugely grateful to all in Listowel Mart, all who donated calves, ferried them, bought calves, donated to the GoFundMe page and all who supported in any way". "To Erin, the McGraths, all your family and friends, all we can say is thank you."
National Gallery of Ireland seeks creative work The National Gallery of Ireland has launched the Zurich Portrait Prize and Zurich Young Portrait Prize competitions. For the Zurich Portrait Prize, the annual competition showcasing contemporary portraiture, the gallery invites submissions from across the island of Ireland, and from Irish artists living abroad. The Zurich Young Portrait Prize is open to young people aged 18 and under. The Zurich Portrait Prize aims to encourage interest in contemporary portraiture and to showcase the National Portrait Collection at the National Gallery of Ire-
land. The winner of the competition will receive a cash prize of €15,000 and will be commissioned to create a work for the national portrait collection, for which they will be awarded a further €5,000. Two additional awards of €1,500 will be given to highly commended works. Judges for the Zurich Portrait Prize are: artists Eamonn Doyle, Róisín Kennedy, art critic and Lecturer/Assistant Professor in the School of Art History & Cultural Policy, UCD; and Seán Kissane, Curator at IMMA. The Zurich Young Portrait Prize returns for its third year in 2021. The inclusive art competition is open to children and young people of all abilities aged up to 18
from across the island of Ireland. Winners in four age categories and an overall winner will be chosen from a shortlist of 20 works. Winners will receive a bespoke art box and a cash prize. This year’s Zurich Young Portrait Prize judges are: visual artist Aideen Barry, artist, art teacher and activist Joe Caslin, and Tadhg Crowley, Senior Curator: Education + Community at the Glucksman. "We were overwhelmed with the tremendous response to last year’s Zurich Portrait Prize and Zurich Young Portrait Prize," Sean Rainbird, Director of the National Gallery of Ireland, said. "Following a challenging year for artists and children,
we hope to learn more about how art has inspired, provided an escape or brought joy to people across the country in recent times.” The closing date for entries to the Zurich Portrait Prize and Zurich Young Portrait Prize is June 23. Exhibitions featuring shortlisted works in both competitions run at the National Gallery of Ireland between November 13, 2021 and April 3, 2022. The exhibition will continue to partner Crawford Art Gallery, Cork where it will be displayed between April 23 and July 17, 2022. Details of both competitions can be found at www.nationalgallery.ie.

Killarney's links with Western Australia rally championship This year’s Western Australia Rally Championship will have an unusual Killarney connection. The championship gets under way this weekend with the Bakers Hill Rally which is based about 100km east of Perth. The seventh seed for the rally is Perthbased British driver David Thomas who is driving a Subaru Impreza. Thomas is entered in the rally under the Killarney Autos banner, a Perth car repair firm owned and operated by Neil Lenihan. The Gneeveguilla man founded Killarney Autos Pty in 2002, which is named in honour of a local garage by the same name, and is well-known in the Western
Australia motorsport scene. “Neil is a handy autocross pilot himself,” said Perth-based Cork rally photographer Dermy O’Donovan. The entry list for this weekend’s rally also includes Kenmare co-driver Murish O'Connell who is on pacenote duty for Zimbabwean driver Glenn Cawood. The Mitsubishi Lancer crew came agonisingly close to winning last year’s Clubman Cup category in the championship. An offroad excursion followed by a small fire on the final round, the Darling Safari Rally last October, ended their championship hopes. O’Connell is a nephew of the famous Kerry footballing brothers Pat, Tom and Michael Spillane.

Return to Rallying document criticised by local drivers Local rally competitors have criticised Motorsport Ireland’s (MI) ‘Return to Rallying’ plan which has revealed that event entry fees are to significantly increase while competitive mileage is to reduce. The governing body issued the document to all club secretaries on Tuesday night. In the letter MI said it was “envisaging a soft return to the sport” and that events would be restricted to one day only. The entry fee for a one day rally (three stages done three times) has been set at €1,000 by Motorsport Ireland. Last year’s Circuit of Kerry was offered at €725 before the event got cancelled due to the pandemic. The first type of event that will be permitted is a “gated” rallysprint with entries for such events set at €210. Currently there are no active venues in Kerry for such an event but Tralee racecourse has hosted several similar meetings over the years, the last being an Autocross event in 2018.
Under the new guidelines, national rallies – two stages done three times – will cost €800 to enter while a new style international rally (single day – three x three format like previous national rallies) will cost €1,000. “People have been away from the sport for one and a half years,” said John Hickey who has only missed one Rally of the Lakes since 1983. “Drivers are looking at this from an objective rather than addictive point of view and at these kind of prices the ordinary clubman can't take his car out of the shed.” The prices were approved by the Rallies Commission who said they were fixed to prevent “discounting of events”. “Look at Michael O’Leary [Ryanair], when the pandemic is over he will be offering flights for next to nothing to get people flying again before putting up his prices – that is the soft approach," added John. Forestry rallies, deemed as partially gated, will cost €850 to enter – only two stages run two times will be permitted

for gravel events at this price. Forest rallies with three stages run twice will cost €900. Neither Kerry Motor Club nor Killarney and District Motor Club have run a forestry rally in over 10 years. “We acknowledge that competitors will be paying more for entries,” said the letter seen by the Killarney Advertiser. “However, at a time like this, the clubs need and deserve the financial security to run viable and safe events.” Johnny Hickey, who co-drives for his father Charlie, has rarely missed a Rally of the Lakes or any local rally in recent years. “For Charlie and Johnny Hickey, if we
do 10 events a year, that will reduce to seven at those costs and that is without taking in the increased costs of tyres and other equipment because of Brexit,” said Johnny. There has been no fixed date set for a return of the sport in Ireland. “We are working closely with Sport Ireland on the process to be ready when the time is right,” said the letter. Rob Duggan, the winner of the 2019 Killarney Historic Rally, said "these prices are madness, competitors are going to have to stand together and not accept them".

Students from Castleisland Community College have made it to the final of the CIF Design a Home Competition. With entries from over 55 schools nationwide, only three finalists have been selected for the Construction Industry Federation’s Design (CIF) competition. Transition Years worked together to design a home that helps ‘solve’ climate change, the housing crisis, and addresses inclusivity, which was eco-friendly, affordable, and suitable for both elderly people and those with physical disabilities. The winning team will have their design rendered into a three-dimensional model, so they can ‘walk’ through the house with a range of ambassadors, politicians, celebrities, parents, and local councillors in late 2021. They will also receive high end measuring equipment, a laser level, and a masterclass in the use of the equipment as well as Wi-Fi equipment.

Earnings set to jump 24% MARKET RECAP
Following a 3% jump last week, the S&P 500 continued to discover higher ground early this week. Investors shrugged off concerns following the halt in Johnson & Johnson's COVID-19 vaccine rollout and strong US inflation figures. The first true glimpse of the much-touted inflation return materialised on Tuesday as March CPI (Consumer Price Index) figures, a popular inflation metric, jumped by the highest amount in nearly nine years, kicking off what the majority of economists expect will be a brief period of higher inflation. As interest rates cool off following the highs of previous weeks, the technology sector and the 'Big 5 Index' (Apple, Microsoft, Amazon, Google, and Facebook) have once again stolen the spotlight, interrupting value's recent run of
relative gains versus growth stocks. For the second week in a row, some of these big tech names set record highs while stocks of companies more sensitive to cyclical economic changes lagged. Despite the weekly fluctuations between the two, an increasing allocation to the "recovery areas" while also maintaining a healthy allocation to larger momentum-driven technology names continues to be the order of the day. In more anecdotal news, the S&P 500 crossed over the 4,000 level for the first time in history last week. Granted, this figure has little direct relevance aside from being an easily digested round number. Still, it does help highlight how powerful this equity market rally has been, with the market now up almost 90% from the COVID induced lows last year - from around 2,200 on March 23, 2020, to the current 4,000+ level.
Elsewhere, Bitcoin continued its upward march. Follow its most successful Q1 in eight years, the Crypto hit a record close of $63,000 on Tuesday, extending its 2021 rally a day ahead of the listing of Coinbase, the largest US cryptocurrency exchange.
MARKET OUTLOOK
Inflation will continue to be the focal point that dictates market movements from here, with volatile growth-based story stocks and some dividend names the most obvious causalities if a persistent inflation increase pushes yields higher over the medium term. The first-quarter earnings reporting season also kicks off this week, with expectations set for broadly positive news and an uptrend for US equities thanks to a recovering economy. First-quarter earnings for companies in the S&P 500 are forecast to jump more than 24%, with
Michael O’Connor CFA is an investment consultant based in the Cayman Islands with a decade of experience within the financial industry.
the consumer discretionary and financials sectors expected to see the biggest gains as these 'recovery areas' benefit from the economic reopening. While a 24% jump in earnings may seem substantial, this is a year-over-year comparison, and you may recall that Q1 2020 was a less than ideal time for corporate earnings…. or anyone for that matter.
What is a Safety Statement?
John Healy of Healy Insurances.
Safety Statements and risk assessments are governed by the Safety, Health and Welfare at Work Act 2005. All employers, including the self-employed, must have a Safety Statement relating to their workplace and work activities. It is a document which specifies how health and safety is going to be managed within the business and it is the cornerstone of effective health and safety management in any business. The Safety Statement will also contain your policy and risk assessments and the con-
trols required to minimise the risks from the hazards in the workplace, as well as detailing the names of those responsible for putting them into practice. The Safety Statement must be reviewed and, if necessary, amended as required. This should be done on a annual basis or more frequently if, for example, your business changes and your employees are exposed to new hazards e.g. the introduction of new machinery or new work practices, or when there is reason to believe that it is no longer adequate, e.g. changes to health and safety arrangements and resources, or a nearmiss incident. The Safety Statement must be brought to the attention of the employees and to any other persons at the place of work who might be exposed to the specific risks outlined in the document. When bringing the Safety Statement to the attention of employees, it must be in a form, manner and, if necessary, a language that can be understood by employees.
What should be covered in a Safety Statement? It must: • specify how the safety and health of all employees will be secured and managed • specify the hazards identified and risks assessed • give details of how the employer is going to manage his or her safety and health responsibilities, including a commitment to comply with legal obligations, the protective and preventive measures taken, the resources provided for safety and health at the workplace and the arrangements used to fulfil these responsibilities • include the plans and procedures to be used in the event of an emergency or serious danger • specify the duties of employees, including the co-operation required from them on safety and health matters • include the names and job titles of people appointed to be responsible for safety and health or for performing the tasks set out in the statement
• contain the arrangements made for appointing safety representatives, including the names of the representatives and the members of the safety committee, if appointed • be written in a form, manner and language that will be understood by all • include a review mechanism • have regard to the relevant safety and health legislation The Safety Statement can refer to specific procedures contained in other documents. These documents might include Health & Safety Authority Publications on Safety Statements and Risk Assessments, manufacturer's instructions for work equipment and machines and company operating procedures and instructions. It is a worthwhile task to spend time on your Safety Statement and engage with your staff. An up to date Safety Statement can be an invaluable document when it comes to a liability claims situation. Pace of house sales hits new record
Houses are currently selling at the fastest pace in living memory, despite buyers not being allowed to set foot inside a home until they have agreed to buy it! Starter homes are going "Sale Agreed" in many areas in as little as two weeks which is being fuelled by an unprecedented lack of supply. There has been an average annual price increase of 3.6%, with 2% of this over the past three months alone, even with the absence of physical viewings and in a marketplace that has the lowest supply in recent history. Nationwide, the average time to sell a three bedroom semi-detached house
has fallen to just five weeks. The reason? Firstly supply is down more than a third on this time last year and secondly online and virtual viewings are speeding up the process of viewing the property and submitting offers. The threat of mortgage approvals running out is also motivating buyers to act quickly. With higher volumes of enquiries compared to this time last year, and supply lower than any time in recent memory,
the virtual world of property sales will continue into the future. At DNG Ted Healy, all our properties listed are available to view virtually and come with a walk through video tour. This enables buyers to bid on a property. Current industry restrictions allow bidders to physically view properties once an offer has been accepted. At that stage, following the viewing, they can withdraw, however the majority of sales are progressing. The average time it takes a property to go "Sale Agreed" in Kerry is currently six weeks. At DNG Ted Healy we are actively looking for properties to sell in order to satisfy the unprecedented demand, particu-

Rowers sixth in European championships Local international rowers Aileen Crowley and Monika Dukarska finished sixth in the Women’s Pair A Final of the European championships in Italy last weekend. | By Sean Moriarty Both women are from Killorglin but Crowley is a former member of Muckross Rowing Club and currently rows with Old Collegians Boat Club in Dublin. The Irish Crew were in a tough final with the crews from Spain, Greece, Romania, Great Britain and Croatia. Monika and Aileen fought hard throughout the race but the crew from Great Britain took home the gold with the Romanian and Spanish crew taking second and third. The Varese-based European Rowing Championships is one of the last big occasions before this summer’s Olympic
Games in Japan and while the local crew are qualified, inclusion in the Irish team for the July/August games has yet to be confirmed. “I am happy with our team’s performance and out of eight crews entered, six reached the A Final in their category, and two achieved first and second in the B and C Finals. On the last day, all our crews raced at their best showing a great attitude,” said Rowing Ireland’s High-Performance Director Antonio Maurogiovanni. “We are grateful for the opportunity to compete in tournaments given the current global pandemic, and we thank World Rowing for organising this event."

Killarney nurse launches breastfeeding guide | By Michelle Crean
I wish to bid you all adieu, For I am on my way, Lockdown set to be released, Much farther than 5k! Farewell to you my daily friends, In the local park I met, Along the path each day I passed, Two meter distance kept!
A Killarney nurse who specialises in helping new moms has launched a new breastfeeding guide. Lactation Consultant and Practice Nurse Anna O'Donoghue, who has worked for the past 17 years in Ross Medical Practice at the Reeks, launched 'Your Guide to Breastfeeding’ at the Scotia Clinic Tralee, which provides guidance and reassurance to new moms while nursing their babies. Anna, from Muckross, has also been working with Scotia Clinic for the past eight years. She has written numerous articles for her peers and provides a wealth of resources to her patients. She is also the proud mom of three lovely babies all delivered by Dr Mary McCaffrey from the Scotia Clinic, so she understands the challenges and rewards that come with being a mom. In this booklet Anna provides practical advice on all aspects of breastfeeding such as what to expect in the first two weeks after birth while establishing your breastfeeding to common issues that may arise.
By Regina Eviston
I do not know where I shall go, By bus, or train or car, But you will recognise me, Waving, bidding, Au revoir!
GUIDANCE: Lactation Consultant and Practice Nurse Anna O'Donoghue from Killarney has launched a breastfeeding guide for new moms.
Many new mothers question if their babies are getting enough milk, and this is outlined within the booklet, including a guide to amounts depending on age. There is also an illustrated guide to show mom different positions while breastfeeding along with useful tips on expressing and storage of milk. "It's a 20 page guide for any new mom," Anna told the Killarney Advertiser. "With lockdown support groups aren't
running face to face and with this booklet they have the information to refer back to." Anna has also adapted the way she provides support to her patients. She can provide consultations via phone/email or in-person along with posting useful information within her social media platforms. Classes are also available online and include a follow up phone call with mom to ensure all is going well. New parents can contact Anna on 087 2851915.
While remaining in the county, Maybe, Inch or dear Rossbeigh, I say to months of lockdown, Slán Libh, le cúnamh Dé.

God looked around his garden and He found an empty place He then looked down upon this earth And saw your tired face He put his arms around you And lifted you to rest Gods garden must be beautiful He always takes his best He knew that you were suffering, He knew you were in pain He knew that you would never Get well on earth again. He saw the road was getting rough, and the hills were hard to climb. So he closed your weary eyelids, and whispered “peace be thine”.

Joyce’s Galway first for Kerry Kingdom’s footballers to get season underway in Tralee on May 15 Kerry’s fixtures for this year’s rejigged National Football League Division 1 South have been confirmed and first up for Peter Keane’s men is a home match against Galway on Saturday, May 15. The fixture will be played at Austin Stack Park in Tralee with throw-in at 3pm. The Kingdom will follow that up with a tricky assignment against reigning champions Dublin at a neutral venue that is yet to be decided. That match was due to be a home game for the Dubs but following the revelation that a group of their players broke the COVID-19 training ban, the team has been stripped of home advanREMATCH: Peter Keane with Galway manager Pádraig Joyce after last year's league meeting in Tralee, which Kerry won thanks to a late Killian Spillane point. tage. Dublin manager Dessie Farrell will not be in attendance for this or any other league match this year as he serves a 12week ban for his role in the controversial breach. A trip to Roscommon awaits Kerry in Round 3 and if they can top the group, a final against the winners of Division 1 North is on the cards on June 19/20. Kerry, remember, are the reigning champions and will be keen to retain their title. However, the GAA have warned that league finals will only be played if the counties involved are not playing in the championship the following weekend. If they are, then joint winners will be declared for Division 1 and joint winners and
promotion for Divisions 2, 3, and 4. The draw for the Munster Championships (football and hurling) will be made on Monday on RTÉ Radio 1’s Morning Ireland, with the other provincial draws taking place across various platforms throughout the week. Just as it was in 2020, the 2021 football championship will be straight knockout.
HURLING
Kerry’s tilt at the Division 2A hurling title will begin at home to Down over the weekend of May 8/9. They will have five fixtures in total with battles against Offaly (away), Meath (home), Wicklow (home) and Carlow (away) also on the agenda.
There will be no finals in the hurling leagues this year so in the case of Divisions 2 and 3, the first placed team will be crowned champions. In Division 1 (which, like the football, is divided into North and South), the top teams in the respective pools will go down as joint winners, unless those two teams also meet in the championship, in which case that fixture will double up as a league final.
LADIES
The Kerry ladies have also been given a start date and fixture list ahead of their Division 2 campaign and their season will get up and running on May 23 with an away match against Meath. The Kingdom have been pooled with Meath, Wexford and Clare on the grounds of proximity with Tyrone, Monaghan, Armagh and Cavan making up Division 2B. Two teams will qualify for the semi-finals on June 13 with a two-week break before the league finals on June 27. The Kerry camogie team, meanwhile, will also compete in Division 2 of their league. They will take on Galway at home (May 15), Cork away (May 22) and Tipperary away (May 29) in Group 2 of the four-group tier with Camogie League quarter-finals on June 5/6, semi-finals and relegation play-offs on June 12/13, and finals on June 19/20.

TANGNEY: It was a really tough time Kerry and Beaufort footballer Fiadhna Tangney speaks to Joe Saunders about her father’s battle with COVID-19, and how the GAA family helped her through a ‘nightmare’ year
FIADHNA TANGNEY
If it wasn’t for the GAA community, I don’t know how I would’ve coped.

In this day and age, everyone has been affected by the virus, but few more so than Fiadhna Tangney. The 20-year-old footballer from the Black Valley has seen first-hand what the virus can do, with her father Gene (56) being hospitalised for months with one of the first severe cases in Ireland last March. A fit and healthy man who loves nothing more than being outdoors was bedbound for three months in an induced coma in University Hospital Kerry (UHK). Thankfully, he has returned home since and is on the mend. The work done by all those who looked after him didn’t go unnoticed by Gene’s loved ones; they raised €27,000 for the hospital through the Ring of Kerry Charity Cycle. Those few months were a difficult time for the family. Fiadhna went from studying sport science at UL one week, to being in lockdown and worrying about her father, whom she couldn’t even visit, the next. “Thinking back on it, it was a really tough time - like a nightmare,” Fiadhna says. “Sometimes I look back on it and think, ‘did that really happen?’ We couldn’t go into the hospital because of COVID so we were just having phone calls to see how he was getting on. “There was one time where we got a call and they told us that he mightn’t make it through the night. That was the harsh reality of it.” As Fiadhna spoke over the Zoom interview, you could feel her sense of relief that they have overcome the worst of this whole situation, and she spoke of how much of a crutch the messages of support and love she received from the football community as a whole was. “I was getting messages from big players that I didn’t even know, it was unreal. We were all completely blown away. I was getting jerseys in the post and all, my room was like the O’Neills shop. The likes of Aishling Moloney from Tipperary and Grace Kelly from Mayo checking in
to see how I was doing… It was just class. “Getting those messages from players that I idolised myself was something else. I used to tell Dad who was asking for him and all that and he’d be like, ‘Jeez that’s great, do they know I’m sick?’ That’s his line now these days. If it wasn’t for the GAA community, I don’t know how I would’ve coped.” Football has been a huge part of Fiadhna’s life, lacing up her boots in the famous green and gold of Kerry from a young age. Her footballing talents were evident early on and she made her Kerry senior debut at the age of 16. Her passion for the game shone throughout the interview, and she spoke out on many important subjects surrounding the ladies’ game. “I think that it’s time now that the GAA and the LGFA came together under one umbrella. If I’m going to training and so is my brother, at the same time in the local club, we’re both playing for two different associations and it doesn’t really make any sense at all. We’re not living in the dark ages anymore. We’re all playing the same game and putting in the same effort.” With the turmoil of 2020, Fiadhna has decided to give the Kerry jersey up for the time being but remains open to returning in the future. Instead, she’s focusing on running her own coffee trailer business near the Gap of Dunloe for the summer, once the college semester ends. “It’s stuff like that I have realised I’d just love to do. I want to travel around Ireland a bit too and who knows what the world will be like after I graduate next year.” Joe Saunders is a Dingle native who is studying journalism in UL. This article was written as part of a college assignment. Follow Joe on Twitter @joesaundxrs.

‘Dublin footballers should be sanctioned’ | By Eamon Fitzgerald
Speaking to Eamonn Fitzgerald, former GAA President Seán Kelly says the Dubs should face further punishment for training during the COVID-19 lockdown
The great sports story of recent weeks continued at Aintree on Saturday last when top sports personality Rachael Blackmore continued her amazing success story to win the 2021 Aintree Grand National on 11/1 shot Minella Times. Added to that she is the first lady jockey to win this coveted prize, making it a superb double after her winning ways in Cheltenham in recent weeks. She was

the top jockey in that great festival of Racing in the Cotswold Hills. Mná na h-Éireann chun tosaigh arís, ambaist. Golf took centre stage last week as Hideki Matsuyama became the first ever Japanese sportsperson to win the coveted Masters at the azalea-bedecked Augusta. He negotiated Amen Corner and many of the treacherous greens with
great patience over the four days, while Justin Rose, the early leader, couldn’t maintain the tempo at the weekend stages. No joy for Irish hopes Shane Lowry or Rory McIlroy. Shane, the likeable Offaly man, matched most players from tee to green, but lost out too often on those testing greens to mount a realistic challenge. He stuck with it and finished
on even par and 21st place in this 2021 Masters. That will give him confidence for the Open. Well done Shane, a great visitor to shoot the breeze in Killarney, meeting up with his great friend Colm Cooper. No joy for Rory either. Loved by the American media and going with a new caddy he was never in the hunt and for a player of his world class, failing to make the cut was a bitter blow.
SEÁN KELLY
What a bad example they are giving to the very young boys and girls playing our games throughout Ireland.

16.4.2021 So many of your ordinary friendly regular fourball golfers will take some solace in the game that intrigues, enthrals and exasperates them. You get the drift; all going well for several holes and out of the blue, Killeen claims yet another victim. The white orb starts off very well but then takes a vicious slice. Oh no, not again. The tall trees and the inviting lake claims yet another Pro VI. Best of luck to all the local golfers from April 26 onwards, relishing the prospect of returning to actual play on the Ross and on the Killarney courses. How many more sleeps until April 26?
HASN’T GONE AWAY
One sports story which has not gone away is the breakout of nine of the record-breaking six-in-a-row Dublin footballers on a training session in the Innisfails club grounds in Dublin. Not the first to do this. Down, Cork and Laois also transgressed and in all cases the managers were slapped with threemonth bans. Yes, but not enough in my view. The players should also be punished, such as a ban for the three games in the league and, better still, make these counties play the first round of the championship without the transgressors and away from home. That would hurt and send out a real message, more than the expected fine. The Dubs would not like an opener in Navan, Aughrim, or Newbridge. Too harsh? Maybe, but it would send out the right message. After all, the regular GAA club player throughout the country had to settle for a home-based fitness programme, while the local club gates remained closed. Dan Greaney, the retired Killarney P.O. official, an ardent supporter and worker for Kilcummin GAA, raised the above in his succinct letter published in last Sunday’s Independent. He asked: “What price will the adult players who took part pay? And clubs such as Innisfails that facilitated activities? These breaches were much more than a serious error of judgment or an indiscretion. Are we seriously to believe that all was done without the knowledge of anyone on the various county boards? Will we have a special Covid All–Stars this year?” Well-written, Dan. More questions. Who organised and authorised the training session? Who sought permission from Innisfails and authorised the opening up of the pitch? Co-incidentally, Dan Greaney is a close neighbour of Kilcummin native Seán Kelly. Earlier this week I spoke to the former President of the GAA about this and other related sports stories. Read on.
SEÁN KELLY
Seán, as former Uachtarán of Cumann Lúthchleas Gael, you are in a good position to assess these recent controversies. You were very quick out of the traps to speak publicly on this vexatious matter. Yes, I was very annoyed that the

much-admired Dublin players and manager should have broken ranks, when so many others around the country were following the advice of the health services and the restrictions imposed by the government. The same goes for Down, Cork and Monaghan. The aim was to get ahead of other counties in fitness levels and that would be an unfair advantage. It should not have happened and needed swift and firm sanctions. Putting a threemonth ban on the respective county managers was an easy option and not a real penalty. On the recent training ban breakout, you had the elite football players in the country winning an unprecedented six All-Irelands in a row blatantly ignoring the government guidelines. These are the players that other players look up to as models of good practice. The clubs and county boards have been exemplary in following the government guidelines. Imagine the frustration of the regular club players looking at the locked gates in their local club grounds. How much they longed for the opportunity to kick a ball on that inviting green grass. What a bad example they are giving to the very young boys and girls playing our games throughout Ireland. How hard it has also been on parents denied the opportunity to let their youngsters enjoy playing with their friends, which is so important for the social and mental health of all concerned. Remember this would be all done outdoors, where the risk of picking up the virus is very low. What will it mean for Dublin? Dessie Farrell will have to step aside for three months, but they have plenty good men in the backup team to step in and manage the team for the three games of the league and little else to worry about. I agree that there should be a sanction for the players and any other officials
who were involved in the process. There is an ongoing investigation in progress, so there may be a further fall-out. The GAA at the top should take appropriate and proportionate sanctions when all is revealed. As a former President of the GAA you had to deal with thorny issues, such as the abolition of Rule 42 paving the way for the Irish rugby and soccer internationals to be played in Croke Park, the hallowed GAA grounds for almost 150 years. More about that story later. Do you think that the GAA at national level, fronted by Dubliner, Uachtarán John Horan, has handled the fall–out from COVID-19 in the right way? These are unprecedented times and all sports organisations at all levels had to adapt to a whole new scenario. Overall, I think the GAA did very well in such difficult circumstances, taking seriously the advice of the Uachtarán and other officials at local levels. However, I feel very strongly that the GAA was too complacent in dealing with the government and the restrictions they imposed, especially in the issue of safe to play. Look at the figure worldwide: 0.1% of COVID cases associated with outdoor activity. During the early lockdown the GAA showed how safe the playing of our games were, taking all the advice by sanitising, not using dressing rooms, players arriving singly in their own cars and other precautions. I felt the GAA were too compliant and should have driven a much tougher agreement with the government. I made this point very strongly at the recent Congress (of the GAA) and was very disappointed that the elite branding the GAA games enjoyed early on was taken from us. This down-grading is irksome when you see the likes of soccer and rugby allowed continue with their games,
admittedly behind closed doors. That is galling for the GAA players, in some cases where the rugby and soccer fields were adjacent to the GAA grounds. We are a very strong association with plenty of clout and should have put it up to the authorities and not be so compliant. What about the GAA at local level? Were you happy how the rank and file took on the challenges presented by COVID-19? A definite yes. You would have to be very proud to be a member of the GAA when you saw what happened. There may have been some isolated incidents in clubs across the country but, centrally, Croke Park rolled out several initiatives and the members responded willingly. We saw it here in Killarney and in all the surrounding clubs. They helped the old, the vulnerable, the young and the neighbours. Such volunteerism, shopping, collecting medicines, giving people lifts for medical appointments all within the 5k, or whatever was relevant at the time. They chatted to people at a distance, phoned them and used modern technology to befriend the lonely and the people most in need. People looked out for each other. If ever there was proof that the GAA was, and is, a community organisation that influences the lives of people, this was it and that goes for the GAA clubs in the Irish diaspora, which I see at first-hand in Europe. Ireland has not lost the traditions of helping your neighbour and the concept of the meitheal. Read Part 2 in next week’s edition when Seán speaks to Eamonn about the opening up of Croke Park to Ireland's international soccer and rugby teams.

Crokes get record numbers for Masters Golf Challenge Dr Crokes’ annual Masters Golf Challenge proved to be more popular than ever in 2021 with a record-breaking figure of over 1,000 participants signing up to the novel fundraiser. The event, which has been running since 2009, tasks entrants with selecting six golfers, with those golfers’ scores at the US Masters combining to make the entrants’ overall tally. This year, Japanese golfer Hideki Matsuyama prevailed after an exciting weekend of thrills and spills at Augusta and, with Matsuyama contributing -10 of their -37 tally, the Castle United syndicate scooped the top prize of €1,000 in cash. Speaking to the Killarney Advertiser, tournament organiser Vince Casey said the club-operated online tracking system was a factor that contributed to the increased numbers. “People can see their updated scores live all the time on the website, and they seem to enjoy that. The fact that the bet-
With the season now heading down the final straight, Fantasy Premier League managers will be looking to squeeze every possible point out of the remaining fixtures. Saint-Maximin, who is not a commonly-selected player (he appears in just 2.3% of squads), could be the difference-maker when The Magpies host West Ham on Saturday at 12.30pm. “Saint-Maximin had a decisive impact last time out in the Magpies’ 2-1 comeback win over Burnley,” the FPL Scout says. “Emerging from the bench early in the second half, he scored once and supplied an assist at Turf Moor. As a result he claimed 12 points, equalling his season-high haul in Fantasy.

The repeated lockdowns have naturally hampered most sports clubs’ fundraising efforts over the past year, but the Crokes have managed to continue their lottery for the most part and events like the Masters Challenge, and similar competitions based around other sporting events, have kept the money coming in.
Toon star Allan can offer Max returns Having recovered from a recent injury to provide the goods last week, speedy Newcastle United winger Allan Saint-Maximin (£5.1m) has been singled out as a top transfer target ahead of Gameweek 32.
MASTERS GOLF CHALLENGE RESULTS
“After stepping up his fitness from a recent injury, Saint-Maximin now looks set to return to Newcastle's starting line-up against West Ham. His improving output highlights his influence on his side’s attack. Two of his three goals this season and three of his four assists have come in his last six matches. “West Ham, meanwhile, are struggling in defence as they prepare to visit St James’ Park. They have conceded at least twice in three successive matches. Indeed, the Hammers have conceded 43 shots in the box in their last four matches, the second-worst record in the Premier League. “Saint-Maximin can seize upon those weaknesses and bring in more returns on Saturday.” This week’s deadline is today (Friday) at 6.30pm, with the weekend’s action getting underway tonight at 8pm with Everton v Spurs at Goodison Park.

Michael O’Connor has jumped up to third, replacing Kevin Darcy who drops to eighth. Kieran Doherty retains his spot in fourth while Alan O’Sullivan moves up one place to complete the top five. Now just 39 points separate first from fifth, which sets us up very nicely indeed for what is sure to be a fiercely contested race for the coveted league title.

Dr Crokes GAA LOTTO draw took place on Monday, April 12 numbers drawn were 4, 15, 16, 22. Jackpot €5,000 was not won. Three patrons matched three numbers and receive €135. Con O’Sullivan c/o Enda, Amanda Fleming, Helen Howard. Jackpot for draw on April 19 will be €5,000. FAMILY FUN COMPETITION: In the next few weeks we will be running a fun competition already committed to participating are Colm and Mark Cooper, Fionn and Cillian Fitzgerald, Tony and Steve Brosnan, Micheál and Mickey Joe Burns, Áine and Leah McMahon. Further detail to follow. COMMUNITY HEART PROGRAMME: The Community and Health Dept, Croke Park, recently launched the GAA Community Hearts Programme, which you may have seen on the RTÉ News and heard on the radio. There was also some coverage in press media releases. This important programme focuses on Defibrillator Awareness in our clubs. According to a recent survey, 42 lives have been saved through the use of a GAA-based defibrillator, or AED. Further information can also be accessed by visiting gaa.ie/news/gaa-launch-community-heart-programme/ INJURY FUND EXTENSION: Given that no activity has been possible for January to March 2021 a further two-month extension of Injury Fund cover has been ratified by Coiste Bainistíochta. This will now take the 2020 cover term up until May 31. This means that the GAA Injury Benefit Fund cover remains in place based on existing 2020 team registrations. Units do not need to register or pay for their 2021 teams until re-invited to do so. Details with regards to registering and payment for the 2021 GAA Injury Benefit Fund will issue once we have more clarity from Government as to what the coming months may look like. It is a condition of the extended 2020 Injury Fund cover to 31 May 2021 that in advance of any permitted return to train or play in either April or May, “All players will still be required to be individually registered for the 2021 season on the new “Foireann” membership system.” 2020 player registrations will “NOT” carry over into 2021 and cover will be declined if a player is not fully registered for the 2021 season in advance of any return to train or play in 2021. Following discussion at a meeting of Central Council on Saturday, March 20, it was agreed to review the following two options as alternatives to the current pause that has been applied to the loss of wages cover that forms part of the wider Player Injury Benefit Fund. 1. Offer all our playing members who may feel that
loss of wages cover is a prerequisite for participation in GAA activities for 2021 to individually subscribe to a stand-alone GAA endorsed personal injury cover plan for 2021. 2. Review the 2021 Injury fund premium payable by each of the 1,500 units and potentially increase this premium by 25% to partly cover €1.3m of the forecasted €3m fund deficit to May 2022 if loss of wages cover is to be reinstated during this term. The funds ongoing deficit is primarily due to the absence of gate receipts during this term which ordinarily sub-vents the shortfall in the fund annually. In a general context, while there are undoubtedly some challenges ahead for the Association, there is also plenty of hope that with the availability of vaccines and the roll out of the inoculation programmes North and South of the border, a summer filled with Gaelic Games activity lies ahead. In the meantime, we await the upcoming government announcements and will continue to communicate regularly with all units. We also request that you keep yourself updated with all communications given the fluid situation that we now find ourselves operating in. Finally, we want to remind you all of the importance of personal responsibility for our actions in relation to COVID-19 as we work together to ensure the safety of everyone in our community. BEST WISHES to ladies senior player Marian O'Callaghan who is currently recuperating from a domestic accident.

The Mens Lightweight Double of Paul O’Donovan and Fintan McCarthy powered to gold and established themselves as firm favourites for Olympic gold this year. Also showing solid Olympic potential was the Irish Womens Four crew of Emily Hegarty, Eimear Lambe, Aifric Keogh and Fiona Murtagh who finished a very close second in their A final to win a silver medal. Burning of such wastes in low-temperature uncontrolled fires creates toxic and dangerous by- products which are not destroyed by the fire but become airborne on soot particles. These can end up being inhaled or being washed out of the air and deposited onto surrounding soil and vegetation, where they can readily enter the food chain. Please care for our environment by disposing of your waste in a responsible manner.
