Sem boys get over 600 points in Leaving Cert | By Sean Moriarty

EXCLUSIVE

There was relief all around for almost 1,900 Kerry students who got their long awaited Leaving Cert students on Tuesday – but none more so than for four St Brendan’s College students – who received over 600 points each! Principal, Sean Coffey, congratulated all 130 Leaving Cert students on their success and the "exceptional results" the four students achieved. “I am proud of them all,” Sean Coffey told the Killarney Advertiser. “They were a great group of lads all the way up through the school and they all have done a really good job in the Leaving Cert. We have four students who have

received over 600 points and a lot more who have over 500.” One of the first to get his results was Muckross-based Dara Lawlor. When he emerged from the reception doors of the collage shortly after 9am on Tuesday, his mother, well-known local dentist Susan Gleeson was there to greet him. When he revealed he had scored 601 points, guaranteeing him Theoretical Physics in Trinity College Dublin, she burst into tears. “I am just elated,” she said. Dara praised the school system for his success. “Most of the hard work was done in the study hall after school,” Dara said. A short time later his classmate and

neighbour Shane Trant emerged from the same doors and he too had scored an impressive 601 points. Shane’s family run Trant’s Pharmacy on Park Road, but he has decided on a future in economics rather than following the family business. “I am very happy,” Shane told the Killarney Advertiser. “If you told me in June I probably would not have expected it, but overall I am delighted.” The other two 600-plus students did not collect their results from the school on Tuesday morning. Ballybunion student Sarah O’Connor achieved the highest points possible – 625 – and will go on to study medicine at UCC. Turn to page 22/23 to see full Leaving Cert coverage.

Further funds for Glenflesk flood relief works | By Michelle Crean One of the worst flooding blackspots in Kerry - which fell short of funds during remedial works - is set to receive further funding of €54,000. Minister Kevin ‘Boxer’ Moran TD is due to

announce the funding today (Friday) to help finish ongoing flood relief works in the Glenflesk area. The news will come as a huge relief to residents living in the Foiladown and Glenflesk areas who had been hit hard by flooding for many decades, including more recently in December 2014 when

the levels of water rose to 900mm. In November, councillors unanimously voted in favour of flood relief works at a Killarney Municipal District Meeting. TD Michael Healy-Rae this week welcomed the news of further funding to see the project completed. “I want to warmly welcome this funding

Killarney ‘Bushman Prank’ goes viral | By Sean Moriarty Jimmy Brien’s Bar is now a viral sensation - after their online video of a fake tree came to life and scared unsuspecting passers-by - racking up 52,000 views, 807 shares and almost a thousand comments this week. Last Friday week (August 9) locals and visitors were left shocked as a tree, which looked like it was planted outside the door of the Fair Hill premises, came to life by jumping out in front of them. It was all part of a promotional video stunt organised by proprietor Alan Breen, who hired a specialist team from Dublin to carry out the fun prank. The popular ‘Bushman Prank’ where a person dressed as a tree spooks unwitting pedestrians never gets old. Alan published the video of the prank on his social media channels on Sunday evening and it has since attracted over 52,000 viewers. “I wanted to do something to promote the pub,” he told the Killarney Advertiser. “Everyone saw the funny side and 60 percent of them came in to the bar to laugh and talk about it over a drink.” and I want to credit Kevin ‘Boxer’ Moran,” Michael Healy-Rae told the Killarney Advertiser this week. “A lot of ministers do a lot of talking but he is one of a few ministers doing good for Kerry.” He added that he brought the minister to Kerry to look at a number of projects recently and he has helped with funding for most. “I want to thank him for his interest,” he

Fossa GAA Club are ‘Up For The Match’! | By Sean Moriarty RTÉ’s ‘Up For The Match’, traditionally broadcast live on the eve of an All-Ireland final, will feature David Clifford’s home club next week.

OPEN DAY: Kerry GAA will open the gates of Fitzgerald Stadium tomorrow (Saturday) so fans can meet their heroes as they prepare for the All-Ireland showdown with Dublin.

Kerry team plan meet and greet in Killarney All-Ireland football final fever is set to dominate proceedings in the county over the next two weeks and the Kerry County Board is inviting fans to a players meet and greet session tomorrow (Saturday). | By Sean Moriarty Fans will be given a chance to meet some of the senior team players as well as members of the management set-up at Fitzgerald Stadium from 11am as they make their final preparations ahead of the big day against Dublin on September 1. Fans will be offered the chance to buy a limited edition autograph book for €5, or they can bring their own jersey to be signed by their heroes. “It is tradition. We always throw open the gates, it is all part of the build-up to

the All-Ireland Final,” Leona Twiss, PRO of the Kerry County Board, told the Killarney Advertiser. “It is really for our younger fans but the older ones enjoy it equally.” This will be the only public player/fan event ahead of the All-Ireland final. The open day follows last night’s (Thursday) media briefing at the Centre of Excellence in Currans with stars like captain Gavin White from the Dr Crokes Club, Paul Murphy (Rathmore) and Seán O'Shea of Kenmare Shamrocks. See next week’s Killarney Advertiser for a report on last night’s event.

CD launch in St Mary’s Saturday Local musicians Tim O’Shea and Rosie Healy (pictured below) will launch their new CD “another skin too few” at St Marys’ Church of Ireland on Saturday night, at 8pm. Their new album remembers some of

the finest Kerry musicians, sadly no longer with us. The musicians remembered are: Con Durham (Dublin and Dingle) who lived most of his life on the Dingle Peninsula and played uilleann pipes and whistles. John Cronin (Aghadoe and New York), a fine accordion player, and Stephen Carroll (Maulykevane), who also played accordion. The legend fiddler Paddy Cronin of (Kiskeam and Boston) spent over 40 years in America, also contributes a tune to the collection. Admission is free this Saturday night for the CD launch and they are also hosting a concert in the same venue on August 24.

Excitement is mounting as Fossa GAA Club are expecting the arrival of a TV crew next Thursday morning (August 22), when they will pre-record material for the August 31 television show. RTE have taken an interest in the club following the rise of David Clifford who is the first member of the club to play

senior football with the county team. The crew will interview some of the club officials to the background of some under-age demonstration games. “The production team decide which clubs they want to visit and they decided that they wanted to film David Clifford’s home club,” Leona Twiss, PRO of the Kerry County Board, told the Killarney Advertiser. “It is great for David, his family and his club.” The programme, which airs the night before the big match, is presented by Des Cahill and Jacqui Hurley.

Ben sings for the Kingdom! | By Michelle Crean With the All-Ireland just around the corner it’s inevitable that supporter’s songs begin doing the rounds - and local man Ben Quinlan has aired his latest release. Ben, who appeared on the X Factor in 2014, has released a pop song titled ‘Sam for the Kingdom – Kerry V Dublin 2019’. ‘It’s a supporting song for the Kerry team,” Ben, who recently became a new

dad to baby Fionn, told the Killarney Advertiser. “I originally recorded it in 2014, the year I was on X Factor, and last week I touched it up and put a new vocal on it. It’s more appropriate against Dublin." Ben added that he’s concentrating on building a music business and would like to wish the Kerry team all the best.” To hear the song go to: @BenQuinlanMusic on Soundcloud.

TOWN TALK EXCLUSIVE

A one day competition, to remember Killarney teenager Niall McGillicuddy, will take place tomorrow (Saturday). | By Michelle Crean

Killarney film's incredible success

A film made entirely in Killarney has not only won ‘Best Film’ at this year's Wexford Film Festival - but will feature as an Aer Lingus inflight movie – and has secured a US company for worldwide distribution. ‘Tradition', written, produced and directed by Damian O’Callaghan of OC Productions, depicts District Court Judge Seamus Moynihan, on his last day in court, who finds himself presiding over the most controversial case his court, and his town, has ever seen. ‘Tradition’ was also written by Claire Corrigan and stars Paul Ronan, father of Oscar nominated actress Saoirse Ronan, Pascal Scott, James Daly, Laura Reidy and the late Brendan Grace. Filming was carried out in JM Reidy’s on Main Street, Murphy’s Bar and Cronin’s Restaurant on College Street. It had its Irish premiere as the gala opening film at the 2018 Kerry Film Festival and its USA premiere at the Chicago Irish

Film Festival in February of this year. Damian O'Callaghan, who has lived in Killarney for the past 21 years working as a jarvey, this week told the Killarney Advertiser that everyone involved in the production is thrilled with the accolade. “We were delighted with the Best Film Award at the Wexford Film Festival,” Damian said. “It is a testament to all the hard work that everyone has done on this project. We also recently signed a contract with Aer Lingus to screen it as their inflight entertainment programme and signed with a US distribution company for worldwide distribution. This is very positive for everyone as it really show cases Killarney's amazing scenery and hopefully attract outside film-makers to come here.”

The ‘Niall McGillicuddy Memorial Cup’, which was launched by Kerry Football Manager Peter Keane in the International Hotel recently, will honour the youngster who died of Leukaemia last October, aged just 16. The U16 competition will commence at 10am with Killarney Legion welcoming teams from Fossa, Firies, Laune Rangers, Glenflesk, Austin Stacks, Dr Crokes, Spa, Kilcummin, Rathmore and Kenmare. “Niall had friends in many clubs through his involvement in school teams, divisional sides and development squads and it was these friendships and indeed great rivalries which dictated the teams to be invited this year,” Elaine O’Donoghue, Killarney Legion PRO, told the Killarney Advertiser. “The whole club is involved in the organ-

Young children help tidy up Killarney National Park | By Michelle Crean Young local children and their South Korean friend took it upon themselves to keep Killarney tidy by picking up loads of rubbish in a local park. Siblings Sarah (9), Sean (7), who attend St Oliver's NS, and their brother Aiden O’Keeffe (3), from Park Road, along with their visitor from South Korea, Jihoon Kim (6) got stuck in and cleaned up the Killarney National Park near the tea rooms in the Knockreer area recently. They joined the National Park Camp from August 6 to 9 in the National Park Education Centre, parent Bella O'Keeffe told the Killarney Advertiser.

“We went to each part of Killarney National Park nearly every day to enjoy the nature,” she said. “After camp was over they had a bit of time to play around and they found loads of litter in the river and bushes around the tea room in the beautiful park. “They felt so bad that people just dump and litter in the precious National Park and decided to clean up as much as they could. In a few minutes they filled up a plastic bag each.” She said that it’s great that such young children know what to do to keep Killarney town tidy. “I'd like to emphasize to help keep our town tidy and beautiful for everyone.”

New bike railings installed across town | By Michelle Crean Brand new bicycle parking stands have been installed in various parts of the town - helping to reduce access issues on some of Killarney’s main streets.

TOP OF THE WORLD: Rhiannon O’Donoghue finished fifth in the World Junior Rowing Championships in Japan last weekend

Young Killorglin rower ranked fifth in the world There was no rest for Killorglin Rowing Club’s Rhiannon O’Donoghue following her fifth place win in the World Rowing Junior Championships in Tokyo last weekend. | By Sean Moriarty The 18-year-old Barraduff native arrived back in Ireland on Monday and was back training on The Laune on Wednesday morning. Rhiannon and her teammate Molly Curry competed on the same course that will be used for the Olympic Rowing events next year. The race was won by The Netherlands. The Dutch pushed China into second. Behind them Germany lost out to Lithuania in the battle for bronze.

Curry and O’Donoghue initially fought it out with Greece for fifth. They won this battle and made up metres on Germany, but could not quite push into the battle for medals. “It was really cool but a bit disappointing not to win a medal but fifth in the world is pretty cool,” Rhiannon told the Killarney Advertiser this week. “We got to see the facilities that will be used in the Olympics next year. I am probably too young for the next Olympics but it has given me motivation to look towards 2024.”

Less bikes will be attached to poles and railings, creating easier walking for pedestrians, due to the installation of the new facilities on Main Street, High Street, Courthouse, Hahah and New Street with more in the coming weeks. Over 30 bicycle stands will be installed altogether, along with a covered bicycle bay and it’s hoped the initiative will increase the number of people cycling. The move comes after Kerry County Council received a grant of €16,000 under the Outdoor Recreation infrastructure Scheme administered by South Kerry Development Partnership (SKPD), through the Department of Community and Rural Development, in a bid to promote cycling as a sustainable travel alternative in the town. Councillor Michael Gleeson, Mayor of Killarney, welcomed the addition of the bicycle stands to the town and is looking forward to the addition of a covered bicycle stand as part of the project. “The development of safe and accessible

infrastructure is key to the promotion of cycling,” he said. “Not alone are there significant health and environmental benefits of cycling its promotion should also help to alleviate traffic in the town.” He added that he has, for quite some time, been promoting cycling lanes and covered/safe parking for bicycles. “Killarney and south Kerry should actively promote themselves as the prime areas for safe and healthy cycling. The potential is enormous. The overall area is so well known for the Ring of Kerry and the Ring of Beara cycles that much of the beauty of the entire area is legendary. The message needs to get out there that towns, villages and businesses have a Céad Míle Fáilte for the cyclist and offers them safe and secure and easily accessible parking locations.”

collecting Lego and Dinky cars all his life. Michael ran Killarney Fishing Tours for years, but now retired, he plans to offer a service free of charge to disadvantaged children as his way of giving back to the community. He needs to raise over €10,000 to purchase a new boat and other equipment. He also needs to raise additional funds to fit an electric engine to the boat to make it suitable for children who may not be comfortable around the noise of a traditional engine. “I am retired now and do this two evenings a week, on a voluntarily basis, as a pastime,” he told the Killarney Advertiser. “I am the only person doing anything like this and there is no help. I took a load of stuff out of the attic recently and all of that is for sale now.” On Tuesday he will attend the Killarney and District Killarney Canine Club’s All Breed Dog Show on the grounds of St Brendan’s College. THE

x

Columnist ANNE LUCEY gives her take on happenings in Killarney, Kerry and beyond

“A drop of rain falls…. and beaches have to be closed!” This wet summer has been marked by overflows at sewage plants and dangerous E. coli from human and animal effluent showing up in the sea from Kerry to cosmopolitan Dublin. This week BallyB has been struck - and rain is to blame. Last summer we had drought and a heatwave, and the water ran out in a lot of places. Crops suffered, cattle were thirsty, gardens were parched and septic tanks stank because of restrictions on water, and in the heat there were sewage and water pollution issues. In winter we have had “severe weather” storms and snow, and the water pipes burst on the roads making them impassable. Someone somewhere must ask the question - just what is the weather presumption in Ireland? No, not the weath-

er forecast but the weather presumption. In other words, what is it supposed to be on the basis of probability? What are the specifications for our sewerage plans and slurry tanks and septic tanks and our roads? What is it that the built structures that make for a civil society in Ireland are supposed to withstand and cope with? The south of Ireland has lots of planners, analysts and bankers, politicians and administrators, psychologists, computer experts and media people and we are tripping over solicitors and are crawling with economists. But it has never had enough engineers. The prob-

Articulate tourism debate did Killarney town proud It was refreshing to hear the stimulating debate on the Sean O’Rourke programme on Monday’s Radio One focusing on tourism with our own Tom Randles of Randles Hotel on Muckross Road and Kathleen O’Regan Sheppard of Kathleen’s Country House on the Tralee Road, covering both sides of town as it were. They were articulate and interesting, and Tom had the ready answer to the age old charge that Killarney is too dear. Well, he had just looked it up and a three-star in Killarney was available for €109 for two people and a four-star for €139, he told Miriam O’Callaghan when she lobbed the question at him

out of nowhere. You wouldn’t get a corner of a bus shelter in Dublin or Galway for that kind of money. Kathleen, who is in business with 33 years - the age of Christ - as she put it, was persuasive about short term letting. Yes, Airbnb is ingenious, but all property to let must have similar planning regulations as the commercial sector who have to have planning, fire inspection fees, health and safety checks, insurance, and all the rest - not to mention rates. 90 days, which is the limit placed by Housing Minister Eoghan Murphy, down here is more than the extent of the season for many, she correctly said.

lem solvers and inventors largely left with the Brits after building our railways and canals, and this country places little value on engineering and problem solving. I suspect we associate engineering with the English or the Scots. It’s a colonial hang-up. As a result of the lack of engineers, everything strains the systems in this country. Rain brings the summer to a halt, drought dries the reservoirs: winter snow is a disaster, during storms we all have to stay indoors like hobbits. And soon we won’t have the comfort of a turf fire because of environmental worries over coal burning in China. Roads are poorly built. Housing estates are placed where only the seriously unsound would place them. I could go on. It was King George II, after the extremely wet August of 1737, wetter than even the previous 10 years, who said the English summers were “three fine days and a thunder storm”. 1727 and 1737 was well before the age of oil and holes in ozone layers. It was also before the great age of engineering of the 19th century which brought in great railways and basic water services and solved transport and production. The problems this summer and last have little to do with climate change, but they have much to do with a lack of engineering. The delivery by both was superb and their views on VAT etc., calmly conveyed. Miriam O’Callaghan echoed the thoughts of many listeners when she said she would like to continue the conversation for the whole of the programme. Kathleen and Tom did us proud. I was so glad we got true Killarney voices on the air. All too often Newstalk, Matt Cooper and RTE reach for the village phone button. They do not speak the way Killarney people speak, and it is so refreshing to hear the non-Kilgarvan or non-Castlemaine or non-Ardfert and non-Ballyheigue accent on matters of county importance. It was energising too to listen to the logical calm - no gimmick arguments representing Killarney on the national airways. The nation must have listened in awe to Tom and Kathleen. We take our hat, er, caps, off to them! Hopefully we will hear more from them.

Speaking of climate change The new tyranny is of course climate change, veganism, extreme exercise, passive non-intervention, not killing the earwig and afraid to voice an opinion in case we hurt someone! We will all soon be living in a caste system where any kind of social movement will be too much of an effort. And sticks and stones will be well out of fashion. The new eco thinking has a religious fervour about it. We are all to feel guilty if we have a steak. We are heretics if we question the least part of climate change. We are damned if we speak about different races. Thank God for the French. They haven’t accepted that very strange Nordic child prophet of doom Greta Thunberg unquestioningly, and find her single mindedness as scary as do I. It is a new puritanical wave. There is no doubt about it. I read an interesting column in the Telegraph last Saturday. “Food Guilt”, Charles Moore wrote, “is becoming the eco-zealot’s weapon of choice in the crusade to purify the west of pleasure. “They have brilliantly grasped that climate change is the best means since the decline of religion to make people feel that they are bad or good,” he said. I love this. Because this binary bad good thing is a particular irritant. I have an allergy to people describing others or anything at all as negative or positive. If I ever use those words remind me to go on a writing fast. He goes onto talk about the new bad people in the eyes of this eco-warrior movement these are people who question, who raise doubts about climate change and are associated with ‘Big Pharma’ and ‘Big Agro’.

Second fire tragedy to hit Sheehan family | By Sean Moriarty The man who died in a house fire in Killorglin last week lost his father in similar circumstances 25 years ago. Mickey Sheehan, who was in his 60s, died in the early hours of last Friday morning following a blaze at his home at Glencuttane Lower near the Cappanalea Outdoor Education Centre. The fire service was alerted to the incident at around 5am, after they spotted

the blaze when returning to Killorglin Fire Station following a callout to a road traffic accident in the area. Mr Sheehan was pronounced dead at the scene. Funeral Mass took place at 12.30pm on Wednesday in St James’ Church. Mr Sheehan was well-known in the locality as he was heavily involved in GAA. His brother James and family run The Real Burger Company family restaurant in Killorglin, and his nephew is Love/ Hate actor Robert Sheehan.

Plenty of fun at this year’s Puck Fair | By Sean Moriarty The weather did its best to spoil the party on Saturday night, but overall Puck Fair was a great success for visitors and locals alike.

First international priests graduate from the Friary Killarney’s Franciscan Friary was celebrating yesterday (Thursday) as five new Friars - four of them from overseas - completed the first portion of their training with the Order. | By Sean Moriarty Two-years-ago the Friary was declared an International Novitiate, and four of this year’s graduates are international students marking the first time the Killarney Friary celebrated overseas success. Yesterday, two priests from Canada, one from the Netherlands, one from Sweden and one from Ennis, County Clare completed the first year of their ordination process. During this year, the novice lives as a member of the fraternity at the International Franciscan Novitiate in the Friary in Killarney. “This is the first step in their training for the order,” Fr Caoimhin O’Laoide told the Killarney Advertiser. “Last year we had five men, all from Ireland, who had what is called their first profession. This year it is nice and sad at the same time. All

of these countries would have had their own Novitiate in the past, but with the falling numbers it was decided to consolidate this into one country and Killarney was chosen.” The five priests who celebrated their first profession with a special Mass at the Friary were, Fr Theo van Adrichem, Provincial of the Friars in Holland, who received the vows of Br Benedetto Ressa. Fr Pierre Charland, Provincial of the Friars in Canada received the vows of Brothers Adrian Macor and Theodore Splinter. Fr Aidan McGrath, Provincial of the Irish Franciscans, received the vows of Brother Ian Cunningham and Brother Joel Karlsson will make his Profession in Sweden on August 24. “The newly professed will return to their homelands to continue their formation and studies.”

Ahead of the 2019 running of Ireland’s oldest festival organisers faced an insurance shortfall, they needed €10,000 to cover the three days and nights of festivities and activities, but thanks to the generosity of the general public donating to a GoFundMe campaign, they all but reached this target a few days ahead of the fair. The three-day extravaganza started on Saturday morning – Gathering Day – with the traditional horse fair in Evans’ field and culminated the dethroning of King Puck on Monday night – Scattering Day. Saturday night’s street festivities were a washout due to the torrential rain that swept across the county earlier in the day, but that did not deter thousands of revelers hitting the town with many of the town’s pubs full to capacity by 11pm. “The weather might not be on our side

this year but I’m glad to say that hasn’t dampened the spirit of Puck Fair,” Declan Falvey, Chairman of the voluntary committee, said. “I think the fact that the public have played such a huge part in making Puck happen this year has touched us all; it makes it all the more special to see people enjoying themselves and discovering the magic of this festival.” Sunday’s schedule included more than its fair share of live entertainment with plenty to suit all ages, including a performance by The Johnny Brady Band on the festival’s main stage. There was no sign of the Monday blues earlier this week, with the Cattle Fair taking place from early morning, followed by an afternoon of song, dance and entertainment which culminated in the dethronement ceremony and parade on Monday evening. Those showing up in force to wave King Puck goodbye for another year were treated to a live performance by The Papa Zitas, followed by a spectacular-fireworks display at midnight.

Works on Killarney Cultural Centre near completion | By Sean Moriarty Refurbishment work on the Killarney Cultural Centre on the East Avenue Road is near completion. The building has been revamped at a cost of €240,000 with half of the cost being provided by the Department of Arts, Heritage and the Gaeltacht and the other half by Kerry County Council. “The aim is to make the new arts centre a flexible and adaptable space both internally and in particular outside. We proposed to re-design the front façade, with a metal structure with black mirror cladding which reflects the trees at the

back of the auditorium area,” stated the Council when plans were first unveiled in December 2017. “The paved area proposed will be a concrete surface with a number of landscaped areas. We propose to use water repellent spray and stencils to inscribe quotations from poets who have visited Killarney or who are currently associated with the area. The paving is designed to show these inscriptions on wet days.” The outdoor area will be covered with a retractable canopy and will be a flexible area that will seat an audience which can view a show on the internal stage or an external stage.

Heights Hotel launch new wedding package

The Heights Hotel are excited to announce the launch of our new package ‘Every Step of the Way’.

CHOIR MEMBERS WANTED: St Mary’s Cathedral Children’s Choir is seeking new members. Pictured are some of the members of the children's choir.

Cathedral choirs seek new members New members are the life blood of any organisation and for anyone interested in singing there’s an opportunity to join two local choirs. | By Michelle Crean St Mary’s Cathedral Choir and St Mary’s Cathedral Children’s Choir are both welcoming new members from Tuesday, September 10, when they resume their rehearsal schedule. St Mary’s Cathedral Choir is a venerable institution spanning back over 150 years. “A magnificent cathedral such as St Mary’s deserves a top-class choir,” Aidan O’ Carroll, Choral Director, told the Killarney Advertiser. “Before I took over six years ago, I came incognito to hear the choir, being careful not to be spotted in the cathedral by members of the choir, many of whom I knew of old. I was impressed by the vocal quality and musicality of the singers and felt that I could really achieve something.” The Cathedral Children’s Choir was established in October 2014 and is now entering its sixth year and boys and girls aged 8-12 are welcome. “There is no audition and membership is entirely free. The children’s choir rehearses every Tuesday from 6.15 - 7pm in the cathedral choir room directly over the sacristy. Children learn a wide repertoire both liturgical and non-liturgical music and learn to read music, something which is very valuable in later life. The Children’s Choir also takes part in concerts in the cathedral and elsewhere.” Aidan’s choral experience stretches back over 40 years. He was a member of St John’s Gregorian Choir in Tralee under Fr Pat Ahern and sang in the National Youth Choir and Madrigal 70 while in UCC. He also founded the Kerry Choral Union which is still going strong, and the Kerry Chamber Choir and Orchestra in 1992. The Tralee CBS Boys’ Choir which he co-

founded with Brother David O’Connell in 1982, and directed for 22 years, sang for Pope John Paul II and in many of Europe’s most prestigious Cathedrals – Westminster, Canterbury, Cologne, Antwerp and Liverpool and in the Irish College in Louvain. “When I took over in the cathedral just before Easter 2013, I was thrown it at the deep end. I had three weeks to prepare the choir for the Easter ceremonies. Then there was the ordination of Ray Browne in July of the same year. After that I set about a programme of renewal in all aspects of the cathedral choir’s work. In this I got the wholehearted support of the choir members, organist Ulla Latimer, Librarian Peadar Keogh and, of course, Fr Kieran O’ Brien and the other priests, as well as Bishop Ray Browne himself. The choir’s repertoire has been completely overhauled and expanded to close on 200 pieces. The choir rehearses yearround, except August, in the choir gallery on Tuesday nights from 7 - 8.30pm and on Sunday mornings from 9.30 10.30am before singing at the 10.30 choral Mass. The choir has also undertaken a number of CD and DVD recording projects and has increased its non-liturgical performances and broadcasts.” The cathedral also attracts quite a few visiting choirs from as far away as Australia and New Zealand and the United States. The cathedral choir often hosts joint performances with these, he added. “The annual Carol Concert held in December has become an important event in the cultural life of the town.” Anyone interested in trying out either choir can simply come along on Tuesday, September 10 at the appropriate time or call Aidan O’Carroll on 087 4103220.

tions were due to be published by the CAO. Some students were not so keen to divulge their points but nonetheless were happy with their results and what the future holds. “I am happy out,” said David O’Mahony from Lissivigeen. Jason Cahillane from Pinewood and Sean O’Shea from Muckross both hope to secure electrical engineering courses. Kieran Sugrue from Woodlawn is on target for an environmental science course in UCC or NUIG. “I did not fare too bad,” he said. One student was remaining very cool about receiving his results. Kieran O’Donoghue from Lough Guitane refused to open his envelope at the school. He is hoping to study law

Across the road in the Killarney Community College, Jordan O’Connor from Firies received an 87 percent distinction across all subjects. “That is very good,” he said, and added he is hoping to secure an apprenticeship as a motor mechanic. “I still need a garage to sponsor me, but I am hopeful of getting a place in the Institute of Technology, Tralee.” His Firies neighbour Danny Cronin is also hoping to secure a place in Tralee, but he has his sights set on becoming a PE teacher after scoring 81 percent. “I am waiting on an interview but hope to do the new Sports and pre-PE teaching course in Tralee,” he said. Another Killarney Community College student that hopes to go to Tralee in September is Namejs Balodis, who

| By Sean Moriarty & Michelle Crean There were varying scenes of delight, trepidation, excitement and nerves at three Killarney secondary schools on Tuesday morning as the class of 2019 were presented with their results by their school principals. While the collection of exam results might seem like a formality to some and can be an exciting experience for others - especially if the results exceed expectations - it can also be the most daunting experience of a young person’s life.

at UCC. “I will open it later in the day,” he said. “Time will tell, but all going well I will be doing law in UCC.” Tadgh Doolan from Woodlawn has ambitions of becoming a woodwork teacher and hopes to study in UL. He was confident that he would get his wish after achieving 407 points.

St Brendan’s student David Osborne, who achieved 450 points, hopes to study Applied Languages at the University of Limerick. “I needed 430,” he told the Killarney Advertiser. “So I am delighted. English and German were my strong subjects.” Danny Brosnan, who also attended St Brendan’s, hopes to go to Trinity College Dublin to study veterinary. The Firies-based student achieved 565 points. Last year’s course requirements were set at 560 points so he faced an anxious wait yesterday (Thursday) when the first round of college applica-

plans to study Event Management. “307 points was the target and I got 398 so I am very happy with that,” he said. Shenice Good wants to study Beauty Therapy in the Kerry College of Further Education (KCFE) in Tralee. “I got what I wanted,” she said. Chloe Hood, from Cleeney, will be one of the first people in the country to study Tattoo Artistry. The first ever course of its kind will be held in KCFE Tralee next term. “I got 223 points which is what I wanted,” she said. “This is the first time this course has come to Ireland.” Ana Basuric is another off to Tralee. Her 352 points were enough to secure computing in Tralee, but she was just as happy that her three community college classmates will be sharing the next part of their education journey together. “Three friends together and that is fine by me,” she said. Nik Banowski from Rock Road was undecided what his next move is despite scoring an impressive 430 points. “I am going to do a bunch of Post Leaving Cert (PLC) courses until I find out what I really want,” he said. Francfil Pontaneles from Castle Falls

He was justifiably proud of all his students, many who achieved what they set out to do. “Some will go on to do law or medicine, others came in to tell me they have

secured electrical engineering course with the ESB,” he told the Killarney Advertiser. “That is the difference with young fellas these days. They did all that research and have secured what they want to do. I’m delighted for their parents too this is a tough time for parents.” This year marked the first time that students could access their results online, but the majority chose to visit their

schools to collect them in person. “We are really surprised that so many opted for the personal touch and embraced the excitement of the day,” Roisin Moore, Principal of St Brigid’s, told the Killarney Advertiser. “We are delighted with the results of our students, but more importantly they are happy themselves. Statistics mean nothing when you look at each student as an individual.”

is on target to pursue further study in Graphic Design after achieving 264 points. “I am surprised I passed,” he said. “My first option was an animation course but I will do a PLC in Graphic Design first.”

ST BRIGID’S PRESENTATION

Laoise Geaney who collected her results on Tuesday morning in St Brigid’s said that she wasn’t nervous but is delighted with her results. Her friend Maeve Tangney, who was with her for the long-awaited day, said she was happy with what she got. “I’m very happy. I hope to do Early Childhood Studies in Mary I.” Miriam Fleming said she didn’t know what to expect. I was a bit nervous and didn’t know what to expect but I’m happy. I hope to have gotten my course Biomed in Galway.” Hannah Daly was extremely nervous before she opened her envelope. “I got what I wanted enough for my top choice Biological and Chemical Science in UL.” And Liz Moloney is also delighted with her results. “I got 452, enough for Business in UL.”

Louise announced proudly: “I am going to do Psychiatric Nursing,” while her sister Rachel said: “I don’t know what I want to do yet.”

Jordan and Dylan McCarthy from Woodlawn are sticking together. They both have ambitions to study computing in either Cork or IT Tralee. “We got the points we wanted,” said Dylan. “We will see where the road takes us,” added Jordan.

REPEATING THE LEAVING CERTIFICATE CAN BE THE RIGHT OPTION

BROOKFIELD COLLEGE: Students from Brookfield College.

Helping students reach their potential The exceptional success rates achieved by previous Leaving Cert classes at Brookfield College continued when the class of 2019 received their results this week. Now beginning its 32nd year, the school is located in a new modern building in Monavalley, Tralee. Brookfield College is a leading provider of private second level education, offering a full-time programme for fifth year, sixth year and repeat Leaving Certificate students. At present the school is busy enrolling students for the coming year.

According to Principal Elisha Dowling there is an atmosphere at Brookfield College where students are encouraged and expected to perform. While Brookfield College has a record of very impressive results at the top end of the scale, Elisha was keen to point out that it is not all about the high achievers.

“Our aim is for each student to reach their potential,” he said. “For some students 300 points or less can be a great achievement. We all have different academic abilities and talents. Once someone can say they did their best, that’s what is important.” Senior Cycle is tough and requires commitment dedication and effort, he added. “It is important that people are happy in their school environment. Students really enjoy their time with us. They get

At present some students will be considering repeating their Leaving Certificate, he explained. “Disappointing results present us with difficult decisions and fewer choices. You may have missed your first choice by a few points. You may just feel that your results do not accurately reflect your ability. Repeating the Leaving is not an easy option but often it is the right one. A change of environment with a different approach can be worthwhile.” According to Elisha, Brookfield College offers that alternative. “Our average increase for repeat students last year was 92 points. With the right attitude and work rate a feeling of disappointment and regret can be turned into a feeling of elation and satisfaction in the space of a short academic year.” In a competitive market for jobs and third level places opportunities exist for those who have proven their ability. “For those with little to show, doors remain closed. It is worth considering before you decide your next move.” As well as full time courses, Brookfield College also offers a comprehensive programme of weekly grinds, supervised study and revision courses, he added. For details on any of the above contact Brookfield College, Monavalley, Tralee. Phone 066 7145896 www.brookfieldcollege.ie

Nature and the environment around us will be the core focus of two concerts taking place in Killarney next week. ‘Nature Music’ is led by the composer and sound artist Seán Ó Dálaigh, a Killarney native, in collaboration with the Scotia Ensemble of Tralee. The culmination of the project are two concerts during Heritage Week, on Friday, August 23 at 7pm and Sunday, August 25 at 2.30pm in the Garden Room at Killarney House featuring music by Vivaldi and a brand new composition by Seán, which will be focusing on the theme of nature and the environment. In the run up, Seán has been leading a number of field recording workshops with the public in the Killarney National Park, showing how he is working on the new music piece using recorded sounds from nature. Participants have learned the basics for recording sound, both indoors and outdoors, in nature and how to edit them later for use in documentation, ornithology and nature studies, film soundtracks and sound art. The public’s contribution from the workshops will form a temporary sound exhibition at Killarney House during Heritage Week. "I am very excited to be working on a project in my home town of Killarney,”

Seán said. “Having lived and worked away from Kerry for a long time it is a great feeling to be able to give something back to the community that raised me. It is a great honour to have received the funding and support from the various organisations and we are looking forward to engaging with the local community." Kerry Mayor, Niall Kelleher, said that it’s fantastic to see projects such as Nature Music that highlight the creativity within the county and, particularly, arts projects that are inspired by nature and the environment. “The Creative Ireland Kerry projects, supported by the Department of Culture, Heritage and the Gaeltacht, the Arts Council and Kerry County Council, are a great opportunity to promote the wealth of creativity in County Kerry and a chance to celebrate the imagination and inspiration of our hugely talented artists.” The project is funded by the Arts Councils Music Commissions Award and the Creative Projects in Communities fund from Kerry County Council and Creative Ireland.

KC PRINT

16.08.2019

KC Print set for a bright future KC Print is one of Killarney’s best kept industrial secrets - with 35 employees and the addition of a brand new state-of-the-art €1 million printing press.

The company, which is deeply rooted in the life and times of the Killarney Advertiser, has grown to become Ireland’s largest trade print solutions company, occupying a 30,000sq ft purpose-built facility in Upper Lissivigeen. Cormac’s father, Danny Casey, established the Killarney Advertiser, a muchloved publication, in 1973 with the foresight to print it locally. From there grew KC Print which began operating 15 years ago when owner, Cormac Casey, and a small dedicated team turned a small jobbing printer behind his parent’s family home in Woodlawn into what it is today. 46 years on, every week without fail, the Killarney Advertiser rolls off the printing presses onsite in Lissivigeen. Today, KC Print provides trade print and marketing solutions to a variety of clients ranging from small design studios to large marketing management and consultancy companies, covering a comprehensive range of print and wide format products, Cormac explained. “KC Print has established itself away from larger industrial hubs more associated with the industry, creating oppor-

tunities for skilled and motivated people to work in an inspiring environment such as Killarney.” Specialist manufacturing sectors such as the print industry relies on skilled and experienced staff, and seeking people with the relevant skills to progress the company has been a key focus for KC Print, which has contributed to the growth of the business over the last number of years. “KC Print is constantly looking to the future and is delighted to open its doors to potential candidates seeking a career in manufacturing,” he said. “In an employment market dominated by the hospitality industry, KC Print represents an alternative career path with the necessary training and opportunities to progress in the industry.” The company’s ongoing investment strategy in both people and plant equipment is a constant process, with its most recent investment - a stateof-the-art €1 million printing press, he added. “This acquisition has the latest innovations in printing press technology with some features not yet seen in Europe.”

Recruitment morning planned in KC Print

29

KC Print is now recruiting for production staff across all positions, including Warehouse, Press Assistant, General Operative, Wide Format and Pre Press. An open morning will be held on Monday, September 2 by invitation only. “This open morning is a great opportunity to see how our manufacturing site operates and the type of equipment that we use,” Richard Coady, Operations Manager with KC Print, said. “We are delighted to offer this opportunity to a budding new recruit. I have spent all of my adult life in the print trade and it has never ceased to surprise me. Every day is a learning experience. There is also a huge sense of achievement daily, being able to follow a raw material product to a finished magazine, like the Killarney Advertiser

for instance. “That twinned with the huge technological developments I have seen throughout my time - it is the perfect industry for someone who enjoys a challenge and seeks to avoid the mundane.” A full tour will be provided by management followed by a presentation on KC Print and the benefits of working with us, he added. To apply to attend the open morning please send your CV and cover letter to katrina@kcprint.ie quoting ‘KC Open Morning’.

NEW €1M PRINTING PRESS: The brand new state-of-the-art printing press.

New printing press is lean and green The Ryobi RMGT 925 series press - built to KC Print specifications took six months to build and eight engineers four weeks to install. The press is specified to KC Print’s requirements and also brings cutting edge new technology to Europe for the first time. Many of the automation features on the press are the latest in the industry. One of the key features on this press is its footprint, both physical size and environmental, and it’s the most compact in this paper sheet size range, reducing the need for extra floor area,

Cormac Casey explained. “The press uses the latest invertor technology, dramatically reducing power consumption by up to 35 percent,” he said. “This was a key feature in our investment choice.” This press also has the most efficient printable area in the market, greatly reducing consumable and paper waste, he added. “This new press reduces our set up times by over 40 percent, contributing to quicker turnaround times and satisfied clients. We are looking forward to a leaner and greener future.”

printed by KC Print every week KC Print, Ireland’s largest trade print solutions company, is responsible for printing the Killarney Advertiser every week. In fact, it is a sister company to the Killarney Advertiser which is 46 years-old and this relationship helped found KC Print, which was established 15 years ago. Each week 8,000 copies of the much loved weekly magazine are printed

overnight in KC Print and ready for delivery to 230 locations in Killarney and surrounding areas. Earlier this year both KC Print and the Killarney Advertiser won an EU business award, under the heading of ‘Irish Enterprise Awards 2019’. KC Print was voted ‘Best Full-Service Trade Print Company 2019’ while the Killarney Advertiser was voted ‘Best Regional Advertising Publication 2019’.

BABY SHOWER: Lisa O'Connor from Lewis Road, now living in Brisbane Australia, celebrating her baby shower in the Dromhall Hotel with all her close friends. Photo: Eamonn Keogh

Oh baby, baby – that was a surprise! Friends played a blinder in keeping a lovely surprise from friend Lisa O’Connor – as they threw her a baby shower on Monday evening. Lisa O’Connor from Upper Lewis Road, who is currently living in Brisbane, Australia, is home for her friend Rhea’s wedding, which takes place this Saturday, and was expecting the gathering to be a girl’s last night together. However, her friends duped her and instead had the room kitted out in baby balloons and steamers from Deck The Halls Killarney, leaving her speechless. “I walked in wondering why everyone was cheering,” Lisa told the Killarney Advertiser. “It was such a surprise and a really good night.” Lisa, daughter of Tadg and Mary O’Connor, moved to New Zealand three years ago and shortly after met her Australian

partner Travis. The couple then moved to Australia and are now expecting a double arrival of pink in late November. At the baby shower the girls enjoyed many party games including ‘Guess the Date of Birth’, enjoyed finger food and a beautiful cake supplied by Laura Taylor of Touch of Taylor Cakes. Lisa said she’s enjoying the pregnancy and looking forward to meeting her daughters - but telling them apart will be hard at first. “At the moment I’m 22 weeks and both weigh the same and are the same height. So unless one has a freckle, it’ll be hard to tell them apart. We might get bracelets or leave on the hospital tags for a while,” she laughed!

GARDEN MAGIC

Gardening - By Debby Looney

Debby is available for advice and garden consultations, just call 086 6088156 or email barnhillky@gmail.com

Soil type is key for grass growth I was surprised to receive so many enquiries following the article about grasses, mainly asking for more details about planting areas and about bamboos. There are grasses for most soil types, however it is important to choose wisely. Knowing what soil type you have is the first step to success. This is very easy to determine by taking a clod of soil into your hands and rolling it into a ball. If it remains stuck together you have clay. If it is very difficult to make a ball at all, you have sandy soil. If it sort of collapses and is crumbly, you have loamy soil. Clay soils have the advantage of being rich in nutrients, but the disadvantage of often retaining too much water. Sandy soil is generally very dry and nutrients leach out of it, leaving it poor. Loamy soil is ideal, retaining nutrients whilst being free draining. Both clay and sandy soil benefits from adding organic materials, such as compost, farmyard manure and peat based products. Clay can also be helped to break up by adding lime. There is another type of soil which some of us have – peat or bog. This is often waterlogged, acidic and nutrient adequate. Grasses suitable for sandy soil include Calamagrostis ‘Karl Foerster’, having upright clumps with purply flowers, Holcus varieties, which are low, and Spartina varieties which are tall and feathery. If the sandy soil is also dry, many grasses will thrive, such as Panicums, Pennisetums and Stipa. Koeleria glauca is a bright blue grass which stays low, Melica

‘Atropurpurea’ has tall purple flowers above drooping foliage. There are grasses suitable for clay soils, Deschampsias will do well also in bog land. Phalaris is also a good choice, having long striped leaves. Miscanthus is an excellent choice also. Boggy land lends itself to a completely different type of garden, depending on how wet or close to a pond it is, you could grow anything from bulrushes to Molina. Molina are non-evergreen grasses, which are reliable. Arundo donax is a tall blueish grass which is a fantastic architectural plant. Interplanted with hosta, ferns, and large leaved plants such as ligularia, grasses can be a valuable addition to any garden. Bamboos add a completely different dimension to any garden. They are a very atmospheric plant, often drawing the eye upwards, while creating movement and sound. They can be used as screening, ground cover or as specimens. The best hedging variety is Phyllostachys bissetii which remains a bright green even in winter. Many are grown for their colourful stems, such as Phyllostachys vivax, which has beautiful golden stems, Semiarundinaria fastuosa, purple stems, or Phyllostachys nigra, which has slender black stems. Often people are concerned that the roots may damage structure, but there are shallow rooted types available such as Fargesia nitida and Pseudosasa japonica. Bamboos do well in rich well cultivated soil which is moisture retentive, attaining their full height in just a year or two.

A WEEKLY ROUND-UP OF NEWS • VIEWS FROM KERRY AND AROUND THE WORLD

INSPIRED BY DANNY CASEY

Increase in road traffic fatalities So far this year 93 people have died on Irish roads in 84 collisions, an increase of six when compared to figures for the same period last year.

Ryanair strike threat next week Ryanair passengers who intend to use Kerry Airport next Thursday and Friday are asked to keep an eye on the airport’s website for updates following the announcement that the airline’s Irish-based pilots are to stage a 48-hour strike.

Trump CORNER

Ryanair’s flights to and from Luton and Stansted could be affected by the stoppage on both days while the Frankfurt-Hahn flight could face disruption on Friday. The airline does not base aircraft at Kerry Airport but pilot and aeroplane availabil-

ity are likely to cause a knock-on effect. “We have nothing confirmed from Ryanair,” an airport official told the Killarney Advertiser. “We can only tell people to keep checking Ryanair’s website.” Friday is one of the airport’s busiest days of the year with the Rose of Tralee International Festival set to kick-off that evening, an event that traditionally attracts a large Kerry-London crowd. “If your flight has been cancelled we will notify you as soon as possible by email and/or text message to the email address and/or phone number provided at the time of booking,” said Ryanair’s website.

Five people have died on Kerry roads so far this year, two more than the whole of 2018. Recent figures published by An Garda Siochana show that 52 drivers, 10 passengers, 15 pedestrians, 10 motorcyclists and six pedal cyclists have been killed on Irish roads this year. 70 fatalities (79 percent) occurred on rural roads with a speed limit of 80km/h or higher. In the period of June 2018 to May 2019, 64,764 motorists were caught speeding an increase from 41,707 over the same period the 12 months before. Detections of mobile phone use increased from 27,751 (June 2017 to May 2018) to 30,978 (June 2018 to May 2019). There were 402 more detections of Driving While Intoxicated. The most dangerous day of the week is Sunday.

Trump’s ignorance will cause trouble Trump’s lack of understanding of the Good Friday Agreement spells trouble for Ireland. One month into Boris Johnson’s reign as British Prime Minister and with over a year to go before Donald Trump faces re-election, now is a good time to study how these two world leaders will shape the future of Ireland. To do that it is necessary to look further down the command chain. With a hard Brexit looming, Trump’s national security adviser, John Bolton, was in London this week, where he told UK diplomats

that he was willing to fast-track trade deals between the two nations. This is music to Johnson’s ears. He needs trade deals with other big players to smooth over the fallouts of a hard Brexit and news like this will certainly take the pressure off him and, he would hope, land the ball back in the EU’s court. It is times like this Ireland needs a Democratic Party voice in the US – people like Bill Clinton, one of the instigators of the whole Peace Process. Nancy Pelosi, the speaker of the

House of Representatives and a Democratic Party elected politician has moved to scupper the Bolton plan. The Democrats hold the majority in the US house. “Whatever form it takes, Brexit cannot be allowed to imperil the Good Friday Agreement, including the seamless border between the Irish Republic and Northern Ireland, especially now, as the first generation born into the hope of Good Friday 21 years ago comes into adulthood,” Pelosi said. “We cannot go back.”

Knock to celebrate 140th anniversary of the apparition Knock Shrine in County Mayo will celebrate the 140th anniversary of the apparition next Wednesday, August 21. On this date in 1879 Mary Beirne, a local schoolgirl and the priest’s housekeeper, Mary McLoughlin, were on their way home when they saw three life-size figures appear on the gable of the church of St John the Baptist. The witnesses stated they saw an apparition of Our Lady, Saint Joseph and Saint John the Evangelist. Mary ran home to tell her parents and soon others from the village arrived. Since then it has been a place of catholic pilgrimage and each Irish diocese makes

an annual pilgrimage to the Marian Shrine. The nine-day Knock novena attracts 10 thousand pilgrims every August. This year the 140th anniversary will be marked in several ways. A new statue of Our Lady of Knock, created by Stuflesser Studios in Italy and recently blessed by Pope Francis, will be unveiled. An intricate model of Knock village in 1879 will also be unveiled as part of the anniversary. People can also partake in the ‘witness walk’ on the day, which is a re-enactment of what happened on the evening of the apparition. People will dress up as the witnesses and recreate what happened all those years ago.

Russians safely land plane after birds damage engines Two Russian pilots safely landed an airliner carrying 233 people in a cornfield outside Moscow after striking a flock of birds, prompting the Kremlin to hail them as heroes who will receive top state awards. Russian officials said it was a miracle that no one was killed when the Ural Airlines Airbus 321 came down in a field southeast of Moscow with its landing gear up after hitting a passing flock of gulls, disrupting the plane’s engines.

Up to 74 people, including 19 children, were treated for injuries, six of whom have been hospitalised, Russian news agencies quoted the emergencies ministry as saying. State television said the incident was being dubbed the “miracle over Ramensk”, the name of the district near Moscow where the plane came down. Some drew comparisons with US Airways Flight 1549 which performed a landing on the Hudson River in New York in 2009, after striking a flock of geese.

The London/Irish teenager who had special needs, went missing on August 4 while on holiday with her family in a resort near Kuala Lumpur. Nora was born with the brain defect holoprosencephaly and was described by her family as "vulnerable”. She has family in the Beaufort area. Her mother Meabh’s cousin is Piaras Kelly who operates Kerry Climbing and is a member of the Kerry Mountain Rescue Team. On Tuesday, Nora’s body was found less than 1.6km from the accommodation she was staying at. Police are working off a lead that she wanted to see a waterfall while on holiday. A post mortem revealed that she died from "intestinal damage" likely to have been caused by prolonged hunger and stress, police confirmed on Thursday. Police said a post mortem on her body found no evidence of foul play. Police also said there was no evidence she had been sexually assaulted and

there was also no evidence “for the time-being” to indicate she was a victim of kidnapping. “Nóra has brought people together, especially from France, Ireland, Britain and Malaysia, united in their love and support for her and her family. She has truly touched the whole world. To all our friends and family at home, we can’t thank you enough for all your love,” said a family statement.

Restaurants Association calling for VAT reduction The Restaurants Association of Ireland (RAI) is calling on the Minister for Tourism, Transport and Sport, Shane Ross, to protect the restaurant, tourism and hospitality industry ahead of Budget 2020. The RAI are calling for a reduction in the restaurant VAT rate as they fear the impact on their members of what looks increasingly likely to be a no-deal Brexit. The restaurant VAT rate was reduced in 2011 from 13.5 percent to nine percent to help encourage and support the growth of small businesses. It was due to expire

in 2013, but successive Governments deemed the lower rate such a success that it was retained until Budget 2019. “Around one in five restaurants in Ireland will close if a hard Brexit goes ahead: the nine percent VAT rate is critical to restaurant survival in Ireland,” Adrian Cummins, CEO of the Restaurants Association, said. “Minister Ross must listen to the industry and defend the tourism and hospitality industry in Ireland. Given the potential for long term and far reaching consequences from a no-deal Brexit, the Government must act now to ensure the viability of the sector post Brexit.”

SIMPLY BEAUTIFUL

Beauty - By Jill O'Donoghue

Pamper mommy time With less routine and more entertaining to be done, the summer can sometimes be tougher than term time for all the busy moms out there. If you feel a little stressed and need a little pampering, you should book in for some time out - after all it’s your summer too! After wearing sandals and flip-flops all summer your feet will be feeling a little tired, rough and dry. While we have a few a weeks left before we need to get back into shoes, it’s no better time than now to treat the feet to a deluxe spa pedicure in our American style pedicure chair with a jacuzzi foot spa and back massage. The feet will be soaked in warm water while the jets get to work helping to soften skin. Your therapist will get started by exfoliating the hard skin of the foot and lower leg. Toe nails will be cut, filed,

cuticles pushed back and nails drilled to remove excess cuticles. Also, hard skin will be rasped and it will include a foot and leg massage using OPI Avojuice. Then choose from a selection of OPI nail polishes, with toe nails finished with a colour of choice using a base and top coat for longer lasting nail polish. Shellac or Gelish can be applied if preferred. Also, I would highly recommend booking a full body massage, back massage or Indian head massage for some real deep relaxation. When we are feeling our best we can look after everyone else better and at a more easier pace. Don’t hesitate, call Jill for more or to book an appointment 064 6632966.

HEALTH & FITNESS Advice - By Brian Foley Brian is available for advice and fitness consultations, Call 087 403 0894 or email info@activate.ie • www.activate.ie

Why diets don’t work You can’t lose fat without controlling your nutrition. If you’re trying to lose fat by joining a gym - but not changing what you eat – it won’t work. Not even Activate workouts, which are absolutely amazing if I do say so myself! The problem is that “diets” don’t work. They usually backfire because they come with an inherent “on/off” mentality, or lack of long term realistic chances of sticking to them. So what can you do to control your weight, lose fat, and live a healthier life? Understand it’s not your genes, it’s most likely not your “slow metabolism”, or countless other factors we often throw blame at. When the goal is fat loss, you need to be in a consistent calorie deficit over time. Apps like “MyFitness Pal” can help you track how much you’re eating, but you shouldn’t become reliant or obsessive about using it either. That does not mean live like a hermit and spend the rest of your days count-

ing calories. It means finding what works for you to live a balanced and healthy life whilst being in a calorie deficit until you have reached your goals. Yes, you can simultaneously live your life and also stay on plan with your goals to an extent - but this depends on the program you’re on, how far into fat loss you are, what the occasion is, and so on. A good nutrition coach can help you achieve your goal, but it is also their responsibility to help you see the bigger picture and take your overall well-being into consideration. Don’t jump on the “diet” everyone at work is doing. Cleanses, fasting, low-calorie meals and even most ketogenic diets are garbage. They’re not sustainable, and they’ll bite you in the long run. Keep it simple. Then go work out! If you would like to find out more about nutrition coaching at Activate, visit our website: www.activate.ie

€113 million to be invested in Kerry broadband The roll out of high-speed broadband to over 28,000 premises in Kerry under the National Broadband Plan has moved one step closer - as the Government announced work to finalise the contract is well progressed. Kerry will receive an investment of €113 million to provide fibre broadband to 28,706 homes in the Intervention Area (IA). This is a mapped area of rural Ireland where high-speed broadband is currently not commercially available and it encompasses over half a million premises, including 56,000 farms and 44,000 businesses. In Kerry, this includes areas such as Ballyhar, Valentia Island and Banemore. In total, 32 percent of all premises in Kerry will be passed and eligible for connection. The high-speed broadband is set to revolutionise working and home life for many who have had limited or congested connectivity up until now. “This signifies a considerable step towards addressing the competitive challenges for the more rural areas of the county to attract jobs and enterprise," Ken Tobin of Tralee Chamber Alliance said. "This investment will enable a great number of community groups and small businesses but in particular, the investment will open up opportunities for even more people to return and work in Kerry.” The Royal Valentia Hotel of Valentia Island welcomed the news. “We have invested heavily in the latest software and the most up-to-date systems which are vital for the growth and smooth running of our business in this technologically changing world. Terres-

trial broadband is too intermittent and does not have the reliability nor the capacity we need. Particularly when you consider all our bookings for accommodation, our very presence in cyberspace, our stock system, our cash registers, our staff rosters, our suppliers' orders/payment and our banking to name but a few are all totally dependent on broadband. Our guests cannot keep up-to-date in this interconnected world when we are full.” NBI chief executive Peter Hendrick said he welcomed Minister Bruton’s recent progress update and said his team are continuing to work hard to ensure contract close in the coming months. “Some members of the team recently met with regional service providers – including several from Kerry – for information briefings about how their businesses can integrate with the NBP. We have also initiated a regional communications campaign to ensure local media and public representatives are provided with up-todate and important information regarding the project, to ensure they can deliver that to the public. We look forward to engaging with local communities in the future once the contract is signed and we start our work across Ireland.” He added that in addition to the €113 million investment in Kerry, they will also be creating 2,000 jobs across rural Ireland.

All weather plan for Cars and Coffee event Organisers of this weekend’s inaugural Cars and Coffee event in Killarney have revealed plans to beat the weather.

Birmingham classic car show coach trip A local coach firm is offering classic car fans the opportunity to take a coach trip to one of the biggest classic car shows in Europe. O’Callaghan’s Coaches in Killarney has organised a three-day trip to the Lancaster Insurance Classic Motor Show, which takes place in Birmingham’s NEC, between November 8 and 10. Departing on Friday, November 8, with various pick up points in Killarney, Farranfore and subject to demand in Tralee, the trip includes two nights hotel accommodation and admission to the show. The organisers are planning a super show to celebrate its 35th anniversary. “To get to the 35th anniversary is very

special, especially with the show continuing to grow year after year, not just in size and audience but also in the standard of cars and displays,” Lee Masters, Show Director, said. “We want to celebrate this with a ‘super show’, that not only pushes that bar even higher, but also says a massive thank you to all those classic motoring enthusiasts who have helped, and continue to make the show the extravaganza it is. So, how do you make the UK’s biggest and best motoring show even bigger and even better? Just you wait and see… Plans are afoot!” Further details of the coach trip are available from O’Callaghan Coaches by calling 064 6631095.

So far over 30 cars are confirmed for the event, which will take place this Sunday, between 10am and 1pm, hosted by the Killarney Advertiser’s sister company KC Print, at its state-of the-art facility in Lissivigeen. Many events this summer have suffered from the almost non-stop rain, including last month’s Killarney Valley Classic and Vintage Club’s (KVCVC) Classic Car Show at the Killarney Racecourse.

“There is ample parking for display cars all around the premises,” co-founder Ger Neeson, a well-known local motorsport enthusiast, said. “But we will open up the warehouse at the back of the premises if the weather turns against us.” So far, two rare Lancia Delta Intergrales, a Ford Escort MK1 estate and several BMW M3 E30s are among the 30 cars confirmed to attend the event. Owners of classic and otherwise interesting cars who wish to exhibit at the first Killarney Cars and Coffee event are asked to send an email to killarneycarsandcoffee@gmail.com, and if possible, include a picture of their car.

RARE: This rare Porsche 911 rally car is one of the many classic cars confirmed for Sunday’s Cars and Coffee event at KC Print

University Hospital Kerry does not have a designated ENT specialists service in the hospital. This is allowing the following very serious situation to occur. When a person has an operation for tonsils there is a strong danger within 14 days of having a bleed. If this is to occur, and if that patient is to present in University Hospital Kerry, that patient will then have to be transferred to Cork to have the necessary operation to stop the bleed. The length of time involved in all of this will really pose a great danger to the person’s life. Kerry TD Michael Healy-Rae has in the past and is again calling on the Minister for Health, management in the HSE and management of UHK to realise that this cannot be allowed to continue, to ensure that a specialist is employed to cover all such eventualities, and that the people of Kerry would have the security of the knowledge that if an incident is to occur post operation, that the procedure can take place in Kerry without delay. .............................................................

Federation of Irish Sport calling for nominations The 2019 Volunteer in Sport Awards is seeking nominations from individuals, clubs and sports associations in Kerry for individuals who have made a real difference to their club, community or county. A ‘Lifetime’ award to honour a volunteer who has consistently given of their time for a sport, a team, or an event over many years, will also be awarded at the ceremony, taking place on Tuesday, November 12. Members of the public are invited to nominate a Kerry volunteer. BARTLETT In loving memory of John Cremin, Late of Dunloe, Beaufort, Killarney, Who died 16th August 2017. R.I.P. In loving memory of Tim Bartlett, Late of 21 Coolgrean Park, Killarney, Who passed away on the 20th August 2017. A golden heart stopped beating, Hard working hands at rest, It broke our hearts to see you go, God only takes the best. They say that memories are golden, Well maybe that is true, But we never wanted memories, We only wanted you. Loved & missed by your wife Bridie, family and grandchildren. Anniversary mass will be on Sunday 25th August at 12 (Noon) in St. Mary’s Cathedral.

When tomorrow starts without me, Please try to understand That an angel came and called my name And took me by the hand And said my place was ready in Heaven far above And that I’d have to leave behind All those I dearly love So when tomorrow starts without me Don’t think we are far apart For every time you think of me I’m right here in your heart. Always loved and remembered by your wife Eileen, sons Sean Michael Brian Aidan and Padraig, daughter in law Nina and Ruth and grandchildren Roisin and Aidan. In loving memory of Nora Murphy, Late of Glebe Place, Killarney, Who died on the 18th of August 2018.

God’s Garden

A life well lived.

God looked around his garden, And saw an empty space, He then looked down upon the earth, And saw your tired face.

If we could have one life time wish And one dream that could come true, We would pray to God with all our hearts Just to see and speak to you again.

He put his arms around you, And lifted you to rest, God’s garden must be beautiful, He only takes the best.

A thousand words won’t bring you back, We know because we’ve tried And neither will a million tears, We know because we’ve cried.

It’s filled with moments, sweet and sad, With smiles and sometimes tears, With friendships formed and good times shared, And laughter through the years.

God knew you were in pain, And a cure was not to be, So he closed your weary eyes, And whispered ‘Come to me”.

You’ve left behind our broken hearts And precious memories too, But we never wanted memories We only wanted you Jason.

A life well lived is a legacy, Of joy and pride and pleasure, A living, lasting memory, Our grateful hearts will treasure.

With tearful eyes we watched you, And saw you slip away, Although we loved you dearly, We knew you could not stay.

Always loved and remembered by your Mom Sheila, Dad Dave and sister Kira and all the Kelliher Family.

Forever loved and always in our thoughts, Mary and Ger.

Anniversary Mass is on Sat 17h August at 6.15pm in St.Mary’s Cathedral.

Nora’s First Anniversary Mass will be celebrated on Sunday the 18th of August at 12.00pm in St. Mary’s Cathedral.

It broke our hearts to lose you, But you did not go alone, For part of us went with you, They day God called you home. Loved and remembered by your loving wife Miriam, Sons Duncan and Colin and fiancé Sandra, Davidson family Cobh and Evans family Killorglin.

A life lived is a precious gift, Of hope and strength and grace, From someone who has made our world, A brighter better place.

Dubs await in dream All-Ireland final

Despite Kerry’s superb victory over Tyrone, there was a strange enough atmosphere on the Dublin to Killarney train last Sunday evening. People were happy, naturally enough, but you wouldn’t go so far as to say that they were ecstatic. There are a couple of explanations for this. Firstly, a good share of fans had their cans taken off them by security as they boarded. (A good share - not all.) It was an alcohol-free train, Irish Rail insisted, as they further cemented their status as one of the least popular organisations in the country. If you can’t have a can on the train down from a Kerry game, when can you have a can? Cans were invented for those exact set of circumstances. Anyway, even for the lucky smugglers who weren’t can-less, the mood wasn’t quite as jubilant as it might have been after semi-finals of bygone eras. As pleased as we all were for Kerry, and they were brilliant in that second half against Tyrone, optimism was uncharacteristically low. We had all seen the other semi-final the night before. They may have started slowly against Mayo but when Dublin got motoring, they really got motoring. The reigning champions look to be operating at a different level to everyone else at the moment and they are odds-on favourites to beat Kerry in the final. If they do so, Jim Gavin’s men will become the first ever senior men’s team to win five All-Irelands in a row. The very thought of it is abhorrent, not just for us but for football fans all over the country. A handful of teams started the year with dreams of halting the Drive for Five. Now it’s entirely up to Kerry. At the moment, expectations around these parts are fairly low. But as one of the lads pointed out on the train the

A handful of teams started the year with dreams of halting the Drive for Five. Now it’s entirely up to Kerry.

16.08.2019 last day, we’ll be saying that Kerry haven’t a hope for two weeks, and then the week of the match fellas will start going, “D’you know what? You wouldn’t know…”

TICKETS

Croke Park and Disney World have a lot in common. Croker is undoubtedly The Most Magical Place on Earth for many young sports fans in this country and, like the home of Mickey Mouse, it’s a mecca for families of all ages. And why else do we make the pilgrimage to HQ if not to see our dreams come true? After all, whether the hero of the story is Peter Pan or Peter Keane, a fairytale is a fairytale. Come one, come all, we’re told. This is the GAA. Where we all BELONG. Of course, there’s a catch. I’m reminded of the parody of Michael Eisner in the satirical US comedy Family Guy. Eisner is the former CEO of The Walt Disney Company and in one of his appearances on the show, he says, “See you at Disney World……… Bring money.” The GAA should be honour-bound to apply the same postscript to their All-Ireland final adverts and invitations. This week, Laois hurling manager Eddie Brennan lashed out at the association’s pricing policy for the hurling decider, which will see parents forking out €90 a head for themselves and their children regardless of age. Tickets for the Hill will cost €45 but standing for an hour and half (at least) simply isn’t an option for young families (or old families, for that matter). Brennan, who won eight All-Irelands during his playing career with Kilkenny, said that “youngsters who attended all games are going to get nailed” while the “corpo brigade turn up and just get scuttered”. Personally, I couldn’t agree more. The situation for the football final will be just as bad. Genuine fans, many of them children, will be charged €90 for a stand ticket that could be at ground level behind the goal, where you’ll see nothing, while the well-connected, who might be (at best) casual observers, will pay the same amount for a great seat in the Hogan. Other real supporters will miss out entirely. There’s no justifying it and I think the GAA seriously need to look at overhauling their entire ticketing structure, with family seating available at a reduced cost. Until then, only those able and willing to pay premium prices will truly belong.

Subs shine in rousing Kerry comeback

| By Adam Moynihan

ALL-IRELAND SFC SEMI-FINAL _____________________________________________________

Kerry

1-10 | Tyrone 0-18

CROKE PARK

Substitutes Tommy Walsh and Jack Sherwood played a starring role as Kerry recovered from a poor first half showing to defeat Tyrone in Sunday’s All-Ireland senior football semi-final in Croke Park. Walsh (31) and Sherwood (29) had both been out of the squad for three years prior to this season and both were widely thought of as former Kerry footballers. Considering their contributions throughout this campaign, and especially down the stretch last Sunday, Peter Keane’s decision to recall the pair has been well and truly vindicated. They will both be pushing for a starting berth against Dublin on September 1 and if Walsh gets the nod, it will be his first start in the championship since the All-Ireland final in 2009.

FLAT

Whether or not the paltry attendance of 33,848 was a factor in Kerry’s flat performance in the opening period is questionable but the Munster champions were certainly well below par. The Kingdom trailed by four (0-9 to 0-5) at the interval and, in truth, the scoreboard wasn’t lying. Powerful full forward Cathal McShane kicked three points from play and his partner in crime Mattie Donnelly also

Walsh has a physicality about him and he’s a target man… which took a bit of the weight off David Clifford’s shoulders.” – Tyrone manager Mickey Harte

chipped in with a brace as Tyrone built up a commanding first-half lead. At this stage, Kerry’s dream of stopping the Dubs appeared to be vanishing before their eyes.

BOTTLE

The Kerry lads must have rehydrated well at half time because they reemerged from the bowels of the Hogan Stand a completely different team. Peter Keane’s young outfit have plenty of bottle and they showed it once again when it mattered most. The introduction of Sherwood and team captain Gavin White added some much needed dynamism and as soon as Kerry got on the front foot, they never looked back. A point from Paul Geaney and three placed balls by Seán O’Shea helped to cut the deficit to two and when Sherwood broke forward from midfield to crack over one of the scores of the day in the 50th minute, it was a one-point game. Connor McAliskey responded for Tyrone but then four devastating minutes

of football swung the tie irreversibly in Kerry’s favour. As Walsh made hay inside, midfield general David Moran and star forward David Clifford kicked inspirational points to level matters before Kerry’s Player of the Year to date, Stephen O’Brien, took centre stage. O’Brien ran the best part of 100 metres to receive a pass from Geaney at the edge of the area and his neat left-footed finish sent the Kerry fans wild. A minute later, the Kenmare clubman added a point to open up a healthy lead of four and Tyrone were reeling. Further scores from the unerring Seán O’Shea, Geaney, Clifford and O’Brien kept the Red Hand at arm’s length and Kerry can now look forward to their first All-Ireland final since 2015.

KERRY: Ryan; Foley, Morley, O’Sullivan; Murphy, Crowley, Enright; Moran (0-1), A Spillane; Ó Beaglaoich, O’Shea (0-6, 5f, 1 ‘45), O’Brien (1-2); Clifford (0-5, 1f), Geaney (0-3), K Spillane. Subs: Sherwood (0-1) for A Spillane, White for Enright, Walsh for Foley, Moynihan for K Spillane, Lyne for Crowley, Barry for O’Sullivan. TYRONE: Morgan (0-2, 2 ‘45); Hampsey, McNamee, Brennan; McKernan (0-1), McGeary, Burns; Cavanagh, R Donnelly (0-1); M Donnelly (0-2), Sludden (0-2), Harte (0-1, 1f); Cassidy, McShane (0-7, 3f), Meyler. Subs: McAliskey (0-1) for Sludden, T McCann for McGeary, McCurry (0-1) for Cassidy, Kennedy for Cavanagh.

Keane would tell you nothing but he’s a good man for a story “Are you going downstairs to try and get something out of Peter?”

Kerry manager Peter Keane after Sunday's victory over Tyrone. Pic: Ramsey Cardy/ Sportsfile.

Those were the words of one of my colleagues as we made our way from the press box down to the media auditorium beneath the Hogan Stand. And ‘try’ is the operative word here. One of the biggest talking points from Kerry’s impressive victory over Tyrone was undoubtedly Stephen O’Brien’s black card, which, as things stand, will prevent him from playing in the All-Ireland final against Dublin. O’Brien has accumulated two black cards and one ‘black plus yellow’ in 2019 which means he now faces a one-match ban. Kerry can appeal all three of those cards and it is expected that the one against Meath in Navan will be overturned, freeing him up for the biggest game of the year in a few weeks’ time. What did Keane make of it all? “Errah,” Keane replied, “there were fellas talking about that outside there alright when I was coming in. But we’ll look at that tonight when we go home, or in the morning, and we’ll see what happens from there.” Later, another journalist pressed him on the matter. “Peter, I know you said you heard talk inside about Stephen O’Brien’s black cards but surely the possibility of being without one of your best players for the final is something you would-” “T’will be very disappointing for the player himself if he was to miss it,” Keane interjected, “but look, you’re asking me about rules and technicalities that I know nothing about. So there’s no point in me talking about something I don’t know about. I’m doing my best here talking about football, and I’m bluffing away at that.” Another journalist reminded the Kerry bainisteoir that he had previously described the Meath incident as “harsh”. Presumably Kerry would target that one? “Come here, you’re asking me a question, like this man did, about technical things that I have no idea about.” Of course, the notion that Peter Keane, the manager of the Kerry senior foot-

ball team, hadn’t considered the fact that one of his best players was in danger of missing the All-Ireland final is absurd. The likelihood of O’Brien getting off on appeal would have been discussed behind closed doors and if Kerry thought there was little or no chance of that happening, O’Brien would have been forewarned.

SHANE RYAN’S BOOTS

When asked about Dublin and the challenge they would pose, Keane responded by telling an anecdote about his goalkeeper. “I went into the dressing room below and Shane Ryan was on the phone to Gerard Murphy of Vincent Murphy Sports in Castleisland," he said. “His biggest problem was would he get two pairs of boots or three pairs of boots because he’d have the boots worn out so much from kicking the ball out to Dublin. “That's going to be the biggest problem. We'll come up in three weeks and we'll do our best. Alright lads?” The assembled journalists laughed, and with that he was gone. He’d tell you nothing but at least he’s a good man for a story. The Cahersiveen native seems to be most content when his cards are close to his chest. From a journalist’s point of view, it’d be great if he sat down in front of us and said, “Stephen O’Brien has to get off”, because comments like that make for good headlines. But at the end of the day, it’s not Peter Keane’s job to write the headlines for us. His job is to do the right thing by Kerry, and if he thinks that plámásing and pretending to be an innocent country man who knows nothing about nothing is the right thing to do, that’s what he’ll do. The reality, of course, is that Keane is far from innocent. He’s an extremely shrewd operator, a fact that has been in evidence throughout his managerial career to date. He has guided Kerry to a league final and an All-Ireland final in his very first season at the helm and whatever transpires on September 1, you can’t but be impressed by the job he has done so far.

Stephen O’Brien is a certainty for an All-Star The performances of Kerry forward Stephen O’Brien merit a spot on the 2019 All-Star team, writes Eamonn Fitzgerald Last weekend’s All-Ireland SFC matches panned out as I expected with Dublin steamrolling Mayo and Kerry just having enough to hold off the Tyrone challenge. Peter Keane will be very pleased with this victory as they had to fight all the way. Keane has the winning pedigree for a successful manager having guided the Kerry minors to victory on two occasions. A Stephen O’Brien goal proved to be the springboard for this victory. The Kenmare man has been consistently

top class this season and seems to be a certainty for an All-Star, particularly if he maintains his form against the Dubs on September 1. That is of course, if he gets to play in the All-Ireland final. He was black-carded near the end of the Tyrone game (his third this season), which could put him out of contention for the Dublin match. However, Kerry will be appealing his case and they should be confident that the black card he received in the Meath game will be lifted, as video ev-

idence shows that a black card should not have been issued. It’s an awful lot of asking the two ‘garsons’ of the Kerry attack, David Clifford and Seán O’Shea, to take responsibility and lead the Kerry offense. Both of played well on Sunday, getting those vital match-winning scores. Unfortunately, the Kerry minors lost out in their bid for six-in-a-row. Unbeaten in over 34 games, they looked good enough to continue that run, but in stepped Galway to win by the narrowest of margins: 14 points to an unlucky 13 for Kerry.

RIVALRY

Kerry and Dublin have an age-old ri-

valry, perhaps most notably the 1955 All-Ireland final when the all-conquering Dubs were expected to win easily. How would Ned Roche, the Kerry fullback, handle Ollie Freaney, the roving full-forward? Roche came out on top and Kerry’s Dr Eamonn O'Sullivan-led team won. We cannot forget 1975 when Mick O’Dwyer brought his team of youngsters, who were all pioneers, to Croke Park. Dublin had a great team but they could not stay with Kerry that day. At current odds of 9/2, can Keane’s underdogs defy a nation and stop Dublin becoming the first ever team to complete the five-in-a-row?

CYCLING

New Beaufort course for Road Race Championships Killarney Cycling Club will host the county’s biggest one day cycling event next Thursday evening. The Kerry Road Race Championships will take place on a new 15km course near Beaufort on August 22. The honour of hosting the annual Kerry Road Race Championships is divided amongst the biggest clubs in the county. Tralee Manor West Cycling Club, Currow Cycling Club and Killorglin Cycling Club all take turns at organising the event on a four-year rotation system and this year the opportunity to stage the race falls to the local Killarney club. One of the favourites for the County Championship is local rider Conor Kissane. The Barleymount-based rider, the current county hillclimb champion, narrowly missed out on the county road racing league title last week. The final round of the series took place in Tralee on Thursday, August 8. Kissane needed to finish in front his main rival, Tralee Manor West’s Cathal Moynihan, but tactical riding by the Tralee club kept Kissane out of the top six and handed the league to Moynihan.

(A3) won the Tralee event. Crucially, two other Tralee Manor West riders, Ross Culloty and Owen Moriarty, both A3 riders, took second and third overall meaning Moynihan and Treacy finished on equal points but the championship

was decided in the Tralee man’s favour as he had two wins over the season compared to Treacy’s solitary victory. Kissane finished in the A1 bunch and ended up third in the standings. “There were five riders in our group,” Kissane told the Killarney Advertiser. “Two from the Tralee club, including Cathal, and three from the Killarney club. There was no way the Tralee riders were going to share the workload to close the gap. There’s nothing sour in these tactics, it’s just the way cycling works. They knew I had to win the race to take the championship.” Kissane will be hoping to make amends in the County Championships in less than a week’s time. It will be his first time competing as an A1 rider at the same time his home club is the host. The championship race also runs on a handicap system but each group is only separated by 30 seconds for this event. “They [organisers] look at the league events as a training race for us and always make us work that little bit harder,” Kissane added. “The Killarney club will be working together [in the County Championships] and I would hope there will be a Killarney winner at the end of the day.” Riders that could scupper Kissane and his Killarney Cycling Club colleagues include Moynihan and his Tralee Manor West clubmate Cormac Daly. Killorglin’s Mike O’Shea, a winner of a round of the cycling league this season, is another dark horse. He is capable of breaking away from the main bunch and launching a solo bid for success.

Nagle on target for Irish Tarmac title Paul Nagle could become the first Kerry competitor to win the Irish Tarmac Rally Championship if things go according to plan on tomorrow’s (Saturday’s) Ulster Rally. The Aghadoe man and his Waterford driver have won four rounds so far this season and victory on the Newry-based event would assure them of the title. The Ulster Rally is round six of the seven-round series. So far this year they have driven four different R5 cars. They have used a Ford Fiesta on all of their Irish success stories this year, as well as taking an Italian victory in a Skoda Fabia and a Belgian win in a Volkswagen Polo.

This weekend they have opted for a Hyundai i20 R5, an astute move given their recent performance for the Korean manufacturer’s World Rally Championship team in Finland. Sources within the world team say the Irish crew should be back in a Hyundai i20 World Rally Car for Rally GB in early October and driving an R5 version of the car to victory would be a good way to keep a future potential employer happy. They also turned down a Rally Germany outing with Ford. Their task in Finland was to score manufacturer points for Hyundai and doing the same for Ford in the German round could be seen as an act of betrayal, and could possibly sour relationships between Breen and the

team that could offer them a potential full-time return to the championship next season. “Paul and I set out this year with one goal in mind: enjoy our rallying as much as we could,” Breen said. “This has culminated in four Irish Tarmac Championship victories and the possibility of clinching the championship in Ulster. “My rallying hero Frank Meagher won the championship back in 1995 and to emulate his success would be a dream come true. I have to say a massive thanks to my sponsors for their continued support in making this dream a reality. We’ll be driving a Hyundai i20 R5 for the first time. We know it’s a very capable car and I’m hoping it can bring us to the championship victory.”

TITLE IN SIGHT: Paul Nagle and his Craig Breen could be crowned Irish Tarmac Rally Champions on tomorrow’s Ulster Rally.

The team was captained by Natalia Maj, who celebrated her 12th birthday on the day. Crokes played against a steady breeze in the first half. Firies were first on the scoresheet and looked as if they might put up a sizeable lead but full credit to the girls, they found their rhythm and had two goals in quick succession that brought them back into the game. Both teams exchanged points and at the half time break the team were three points in arrears. Despite a wonderful second half display in which Crokes added four goals and a point to their first half tally, Firies managed to maintain that half time lead to the finish. Great credit to both teams for a highly entertaining game and best of luck to Firies in the final.
