Killarney Aces Tourism Review But Parking Still A Major Concern

The much-anticipated Killarney Tourism Economic Impact Review (TEIR One) was officially published this week and it certainly didn’t disappoint. The 53-page report is packed from cover to cover with insightful information - for those in the industry and the general public alike - and the Killarney Chamber of Tourism and Commerce deserve a huge amount of credit for their role in commissioning the study. The good news (of which there is plenty) is that the findings explicitly confirm Killarney’s status as the tourism capital of Ireland. Obviously that won’t come as a massive surprise to any of our readers but it’s nice to hear it all the same. 1.1 million visitors come to our town annually, which is a staggering figure when you consider that only 17,778 of us live here on a permanent basis. These tourists generate €410 million for the local economy per year and sup-

port 3,122 jobs locally. We scored high when it came to visitor satisfaction with almost all of the respondents saying that Killarney either met or exceeded their expectations. The vast majority of people surveyed also said that the customer service they received here was good or very good and, although value for money didn’t rank highly compared to other categories, the rating Killarney received was twice the national average. It wasn’t all good news, however, as the report revealed that Killarney’s occupancy rates during the off-season are markedly lower than they are in Dublin. They are also well below the national average and they are even lower than the rest of the southwest region in general. Another longstanding issue also reared its ugly head in the report: Parking. Increasing the town’s parking was the number one recommendation made

by visitors who were polled, with improving infrastructure/reducing traffic coming in at number two. Parking was also cited as a major concern by Chamber members with 1 in 4 saying that the current situation was a barrier to tourism development. Here at the Killarney Advertiser we’ve been vocal about the town’s chronic parking problem for quite some time and have put forward a number of potential solutions. Our Glebe car park suggestion received mixed reviews but reaction to our idea of constructing a multi-storey car park/cultural centre on Lewis Road was largely positive. The council’s decision to give the green light to the Rock Road car park is a positive step but is it really the best possible site for such a development? From the outside at least, it seems very much like a stopgap measure. The lack of parking is clearly a serious issue and this new report specifically

states that although Killarney is meeting its promise to its target audience, “many of the areas highlighted by tourists as areas for future attention could erode these satisfaction ratings over the medium to long term”. It goes on to say that a “longer term master-planning focus is required”. Now that the problem is down in black in white for all to see, surely it’s time to solve it once and for all.

Accomodation

Kerry Rent Prices Up, Fewer Homes Available Rents in Kerry were on average 10.1% higher in the final three months of 2017 than they were a year previously, according to a fresh report published by Daft.ie. The average advertised rent is now €735, up 34% from its lowest point. Rents rose nationwide but the increase

seen in Kerry was bigger than in any other county in Munster. Clare, Limerick and Waterford all experienced a rise of less than 10% while Cork’s average was up just 8.6%. Tipperary (7.4%) saw the lowest increase of any county in the province. The figures also revealed that only 670 homes were available to rent

in Munster on February 1st, 20% lower than on the same day in 2017. With the TEIR One report predicting an increase of 30% in the number of visitors coming to Killarney by 2025, it is expected that more jobs will be created in the tourism industry. Many people who have already moved to Killarney for work

are struggling to find suitably priced accommodation, so where are these future migrant workers going to live? The five-star Europe Hotel recently announced plans to build 40 staff bedrooms at a cost of €3 million and similar-style projects may be necessary if local hotels are to recruit and retain staff.

The Chatroom

Advertiser Couch Makes National News

The Killarney Advertiser couch made waves nationally this past week following a very special edition of the Chatroom. Our intrepid interviewer Kieran Healy braved the elements and hauled the famous couch up Carrauntoohil for a chat with Maureen Hegarty and Piaras Kelly, organisers of the inaugural Killarney Mountain Festival which takes place on March 9, 10 and 11. Local legend Geoffrey O’Connor and his new gleaming tractor carried the couch and its passengers up

through the snow-capped Reeks and photographer extraordinaire Valerie O’Sullivan captured some incredible photos of the curious scenes. Those photos were subsequently shared on our Facebook page and picked up by the national media with the Irish Examiner and the Irish Times both publishing the amazing shots. “The morning of the interview, Piaras from kerryclimbing.ie said conditions on the mountains were perfect,” Kieran explained. “He asked if we could do

the interview up there.” So off they went, couch in tow - in spite of the freezing cold weather up Ireland’s highest peaks. “It was VERY cold,” Kieran said. “My fingers have never experienced cold like it.” It was all worth it, though, as the reaction to the unique interview has been overwhelming. The video has around 8,000 views on Facebook and, more importantly, it has helped to give the Kerry Mountain Festival the exposure it deserves.

In Memorium

Killarney Remembers The Great Ted Moynihan Back in 1990, Ted Moynihan, then a sergeant major in the FCA, organised a walk with his fellow members to do the Ring of Kerry over five days on the march. It was the start off moment to setting up a hospice foundation in the county. As time passed, branches of hospice were set up around the county, the aim of which was to create awareness of what hospice was about. Ted had a vision back then to have a state of the art building constructed in Tralee, a hospice unit in the grounds of the now University Hospital Kerry. Through Ted’s effort and hard work, his dream became a reality on September 22, 2017 when he per-

formed the official opening of a 15-bed unit. While in ill health he still kept up the fundraising to help finance the day to day running. Ironically, his last days were spent in the unit he strove to create. Ted was well-known throughout the county and was a regular participant in the Models in Recovery Fashion Show in the INEC each year. Ted was honoured to be named Kerry Person of the year in 2017 for his hospice fundraising and creation. Our sympathies go to his wife Breda and family on his sad passing. He left a fine legacy for which he will always be remembered. Ted was laid to rest in Rath Cemetery on Saturday last. May he rest in peace.

TOWNTALK

Tourism Provides €410m Per Year & Supports 3,100 Jobs, Report Finds

Killarney’s contribution to the tourism industry nationally has been confirmed in a report launched this week by Minister of State for Tourism and Sport Brendan Griffin which reveals an overall economic impact of €410 million generated locally by holidaymakers. Launched at the Aghadoe Heights Hotel on the outskirts of Killarney, the Killarney Tourism Economic Impact Review (TEIR One) report, compiled by strategic research consultants W2 Consulting, predicts growth of 30% for tourism in Killarney between now and 2025. The review, commissioned by the Killarney Chamber of Tourism and Commerce, involved an examination of the economic contribution of tourism, attitudes of visitors to the town and areas for consideration to promote further tourism growth. The timeframe for the tourism industry research was August to October 2017, with all data supplied based on 2016 performance indicators.

The report found that Killarney is delivering for tourists, with 41% of visitors stating it had exceeded expectations and 57% that it had met expectations. The town also scored strongly in terms of value for money, with 77% rating Killarney either ‘very good’ or ‘good’ value compared to 61% for Ireland. The average room rate for Killarney was €113 compared to €139 nationally. Its monthly average room rate peaked in August at €126, compared to €117 nationally – one of only two months of the year when the town had a rate higher than the national average. However, Killarney’s rate was still lower than Dublin’s rate (€139) during August. It also reveals that North American market remains the most lucrative for the Irish tourism industry, with the US/ Canadian guest spending 80% more per day than domestic tourists. North American visitors have an average daily spend of €191.50 – 30% more than UK tourists and more than double that

of Mainland European visitors. Two key challenges stand out for the town – regionality and seasonality. The former emerged in results on occupancy rates, with the annual average for Killarney at 64% and 74% nationally. Killarney has, however, twice the national average of beds per head of population. Nonetheless, seasonality remains an issue for the tourism sector in Killarney, with an average occupancy of just 20% in December – its weakest performing month – compared to 48% in the (southwest) region, 71% in Dublin and 60% nationally at that time. Another issue is the low level of business tourism, with only 7% of visitors coming to Killarney for business, in keeping with Kerry’s ranking as the lowest of all Wild Atlantic Way counties for IDA jobs per capita and less than half the national average. Commenting on the results, Killarney Chamber of Tourism & Commerce president Paul O’Neill said: “This report

has been enlightening. It has quantified just how important tourism is for us and the figures are hugely impressive. We most definitely have the capacity, with in excess of 10,000 beds in the town; we have a unique product in terms of what we offer in the town itself and immediate hinterland but also what we offer as a gateway to both the Ring of Kerry and Dingle Peninsula. And according to this report, visitors are having their expectations more than met. “The report does, however, raise some issues, particularly with regard to our regional location and seasonality. While these are challenges we must address, we believe that with the right approach and investment we can turn them into an opportunity. This is also very much recognised in the Fáilte Ireland strategy to address regionality and seasonality and the County Kerry Tourism Strategy & Action Plan 20162022 objectives.”

Among the key recommendations outlined in the TEIR 1 report are:

• • • • • •

A national and international ‘Killarney’ digital marketing campaign Supporting direct international access to the west coast Investment in road network to Kerry, particularly the Macroom and Adare by-passes, and broadband in Kerry Preparing for the Brexit challenge by building on Killarney’s strong appeal within the North American and Mainland European markets Enhancing the product mix in the town, including indoor attractions, to build its capacity to attract and retain visitors Investing in key products or segments that will address the seasonality challenges faced by Killarney and the wider Kerry area, including completion of Gap of Dunloe Greenway, Fossa Way and Lough Leane Loop Walk

Conor Hennigan, Development Manager, Killarney Chamber of Commerce and Tourism said: “Tourism is hugely important to Killarney, as this report illustrates, but there are indicators within the report that confirm the economic imbalance on this island. The fact that Dublin is the destination most frequently visited by tourists after their time in Killarney suggests that not enough of our visitors are spending time elsewhere in Co. Kerry or on the Wild Atlantic Way. The report also raises concerns about the low percentage of beds being booked for business reasons, mirroring the fact that Kerry has the second lowest number of IDA jobs on the Wild Atlantic Way. There’s clearly a perception that all is well in Kerry because of tourism but this report indicates that while we have an amazing product that is delivering on tourists’ expectations, there are areas we need to address.”

Entertainment

Callan To Star At Mayor’s Charity Shindig Killarney will experience a St Patrick’s weekend celebration the likes of which it has never seen before thanks to the town’s first citizen who is to host a major night of top-notch entertainment to raise funds for two very worthy causes. Cllr Niall Kelleher is reviving the tradition of holding a mayor’s fundraising ball on March 18 but this year, given its immediate proximity to the St Patrick’s Day celebrations, it is to be known as the Mayor’s Charity Shindig. All funds raised on the evening will be divided between the Kerry Parents and Friends Buy a Bus Campaign and the Social Action Group in Rathmore with Mayor Kelleher anxious to help both very worthy causes. “As Mayor of Killarney, I am delighted to be in a position to organise an event that will help good causes and I know the people of the greater Killarney Municipal District and beyond will be only too happy to offer their support and, in the process, have a night to remember,” Mayor Kelleher said. The gala event, a key part of this year’s St Patrick’s Weekend Festival in the town, will be held in the INEC, Killarney on Sunday, March 18 and with the bank holiday Monday to follow, it is considered the perfect time for a great get-together. The gala will include a pre-dinner drinks reception, a sumptuous banquet, after-dinner entertainment with a nationally renowned celebrity guest and dancing to big band sounds until the early hours. Mayor Kelleher is certainly pulling out all the stops as the master of ceremonies and after dinner guest speaker for the evening will be none other than accomplished comedian and satirist Oliver Callan. The hugely popular star will be followed by The Kelts who are one of the most popular and engaging dance bands on the circuit. Tickets for the big event are €65.00, the dress code is lounge suit, as opposed to black tie, and the fun will get underway at 7.30pm. Tickets are available from Killarney Town Hall, Rathmore Social Action Group, Kerry Parents and Friends, Rathmore Post Office, Killarney Chamber of Tourism and Commerce and Cllr Niall Kelleher’s Offices in the Courtyard, Fairhill.

Ginger Army Set To Invade Excitement is building ahead of a weekend of fun and entertainment celebrating the rarest hair colour in the world. All people of redhead and non-redhead origins are invited to The Bantry Redfest ‘An Slua Rua’. The Westlodge Hotel and Leisure Centre is situated in the market town of Bantry, overlooking the eternally beautiful Bantry Bay on the Wild Atlantic Way. Red hair is the rarest hair colour in the world with only 0.6% of the world’s population being blessed with red hair. Red hair is more prevalent amongst Irish people with 10% of us freckled and flame haired. The festival will take place over a 4-day period and there will be a full programme of events each day from morning to night to keep visitors entertained. There will be plenty of activities within the grounds such as parades, Irish dancing, traditional music and sessions and céilís to name but a few. On Friday attendees will be welcomed with the launch of the weekend. The Kilkenny’s will open the festival and

there will be a gig after in ‘Club Rua’ with Mr. Music with a range of other events taking place throughout the day. Saturday begins with a redhead parade, starting in Bantry town finishing at The Westlodge. After the parade, free outdoor entertainment will be provided with local bands showcasing the area’s talent. There will be a mini food village set up, bouncy castles and activities for families. There will be an outdoor cinema on the grounds that night with the Disney pixar film Brave, which has a redhead as the main character. Then visitors can enjoy a Céilí with Neilly O’ Connor followed by a gig in ‘Club Rua’ with Mr Music. Sunday is a family fun day out on the grounds, the Boogie Band will perform that night, and there will be a late gig in Club Rua. On Monday there will be an afternoon dance with Derek Ryan. The weekend will feature an abundance of redhead live music, activities, culture, comedy and more. Bantry is looking forward to the invasion of the ginger army!

Sickly A Sell-Out But Funds Still Needed

The Sickly Come Dancing event organized by the Sports and Social Club of University Hospital Kerry is already sold out but contributions can still be made through their GoFundMe page. The event, which will take place in Ballygarry House Hotel, Tralee on February 23, is in aid of the chemotherapy day unit in UHK. In total 24 hospital staff members from all different disciplines within the hospital have volunteered to dance ably assisted by a hardworking supporting committee. The chemotherapy day unit is where chemotherapy is administered to oncology patients. Due to increasing demand for oncology services in Kerry the hospital has outgrown the current units fa-

cilities and are in the process of looking to extend the unit in order to provide a purpose built facility where patients can be treated with compassion, respect and dignity at all stages of the treatment process. The expansion of the current chemotherapy day unit is essential in order to address the growing demand for the service. To make a donation, visit gofundme.com/sports-and-social-club-uhk. Cheques can be sent to Cora Walsh, Sports and Social Club Chairperson, UHK. Contact Therese Carroll for more info (therese.carroll@hse.ie) or call Paul on 087 9352206.

Scór

Spa Dancers Hoping To Go Back-To-Back It will be a very special occasion for the families of three Kerry clubs this Saturday as the curtain comes down on Scór na nÓg activities for the 2017/18 season. Spa, Dr Crokes and Na Gaeil are all competing in the Scór Na nÓg Craobh na hÉireann All-Ireland Finals. Not for the first time in Scór na nÓg competition, Kerry will be strongly represented, There is certainly an air of confidence throughout the county that all three clubs involved in the various categories are deserving ambassadors with plenty of talent and will not let the Kingdom down. The day’s proceedings will be getting under way at 11am with the Quiz category which will be held in the Clayton Hotel in Sligo. Kerry’s representatives are from the Dr Crokes club with a team comprised of Mark Cooper, Treasa O’Sullivan, Cillian Hickey and Jamie Muldoon. The Crokes were very much involved back the years and recently have once again revived interest in taking part in competition, doing great work at national school level. No

doubt they will be going all out to make a big impression and pick up that first All-Ireland medal. Both Spa and Na Gaeil will be involved in the second half of the day’s programme at the nearby Knockrea Arena at Sligo IT. Spa made the breakthrough at All-Ireland level when their set dancers competed in Derry in 2013. They have since claimed six All-Ireland titles: Rince Seit and Aithriseoireacht in 2014, Rince Fóirne and Tráth na gCeist in 2015, Tráth na gCeist in 2016 and Rince Seit in 2017. On Saturday the current team of Erin Holland, Meghann Cronin, Siona Moynihan, Orlaith Spillane, Liam Spillane, Gary O’Sullivan, Cian O’Sullivan and Eoghan Mulvaney will be aiming to win back-to-back set dancing championships. Na Gaeil, meanwhile, will be competing in the in Léiriú (novelty) section.

Have you ever considered getting a close look at how busy honey bees actually are? Raising bees is becoming more popular by the day. It’s an interesting hobby that has tons of benefits. The obvious reason why many people keep bees is for the honey. Local raw honey does more than taste good, it can also keep you healthy: honey is one of the most nutritious foods you can consume. It contains Vitamins B1, B2, B3, B5, B6, and C, as well as numerous antioxidants to build healthy enzymes and rifidobacteria to aid with digestion. On acquiring your first colony of bees, you will see them pollinate the plants and shrubs around your home and your flowers will be happy for it. Urban beehives tend to do better than rural beehives because in rural areas pesticides are used more frequently in commercial farming. Beekeeping is something that can literally be for anyone, young or old, and is something the whole family can do together. As long as you live in an area with flowering shrubs, trees, or plants then you can raise bees. Without

bees, we have no pollination and, in turn, our food supply takes a serious hit. So if you are looking for a relaxing hobby or would be excited by the prospect of having your own supply of really good honey then beekeeping just might be for you! If you are interested then register and come along to the series of lectures from 7.30pm–9pm at the Teagasc Offices, Cleeney, Tralee Road, Killarney (details below) Thursday, February 22: Irene Power CFL on equipment - year’s work including assembling frames Thursday, March 1: Aoife Nic Giolla Coda on spring management, queens in hives and nuclei Thursday, March 8: Noel Power CFL on controlling bees and working for honey, and stock increase Thursday, March 15: Dennis Ryan CFL on summer apiary management, harvesting the honey and treating the bees for varroa For registration details, email Kerry Beekeepers Association Secretary Ian Flude at id.flude@btinternet.com.

Award

Orla Benson Remembered At DCU Scholarship Awards The memory of Killarney native Orla Benson was honoured at a Memorial Scholarship awards ceremony in The Helix at DCU this week, where 17 students received awards named in honour of 13 individuals who have played a key role in the life of Dublin City University and in Irish society. Orla completed her BSc in Biotechnology at DCU in 1995 and was tragically murdered that summer whilst working in Boston. The Orla Benson Memorial Scholarship was established at DCU in 1996 by friends and family. It is awarded annually to assist a postgraduate student with their research in the field of biotechnology. This year, the Orla Benson Memorial Scholarship was presented to Arun Decano, a PhD candidate in DCU’s School of Biotechnology. Arun’s research focuses on discovering new infection control approaches to combat the increasing global rates of infectious diseases. Her scholarship funding will enable Arun to further her research by working with researchers at the Wellcome Trust Sanger Institute in the UK. Nathalie Walker, CEO of DCU Educational Trust told gathered attendees, “This year we have awarded scholarships to 17 students whose talent and dedication are a tribute to those we remember today. Orla Benson shone brightly in her own life and so it is fitting that her legacy will be honoured and live on in a bright and gifted researcher like Arun Decano.” The 17 scholarship recipients were selected based on their talent and dedication but also according to specific criteria set by scholarship donors. Eleven scholarships were presented to undergraduate students supported by DCU’s Access Programme

Mary Shine Thompson (member of DCU Educational Trust Council of Trustees), Arun Decano (Orla Benson Scholarship recipient) and Professor Brian MacCraith (President of DCU).

which makes third level education accessible to students from disadvantaged socio-economic backgrounds and provides financial, academic and personal supports to help students succeed in their

studies. A further five scholarships were awarded to support students engaged in postgraduate research or study in fields as diverse as Law, Biotechnology, Marketing, Journalism and International Relations.

School

Two Mile School Catering For All Faiths Equally It’s now five months since Kerry ETB opened the doors of the Two Mile Community National School in Killarney. This is the first primary school of its kind in Kerry. As well as serving the families of Two Mile, the new school has attracted children from the wider Killarney area who are looking for a progressive model of education, rooted in the best tradition. As well as its unique multidenominational ethos, having Kerry ETB as its patron is significant in what this school has to offer. The ETB provides key administrative, IT, HR and many other supports to its schools. Catherine Barry, the first principal of the Two Mile Com-

munity National School, explains what makes the CNS model unique: “ A distinguishing feature of the CNS model is its multidenominational ethos. The school caters for children of all faiths and beliefs equally. Parents of children in CNS schools appreciate that these schools make space for the spiritual part of a child’s identity while respecting all faiths and secular beliefs equally.” Caroline Riordan, chairperson of the Parents Association, explains the reason for her choice: “It’s great that in this school the emphasis is on the development of the whole child, academically, socially, physically and spiritually. Children learn to celebrate diversity in a

meaningful way.” Although unique in terms of ethos, the curriculum in Two Mile CNS is in line with the Primary School Curriculum and guidelines laid down by the Department of Education and Skills.

The school is accepting enrolments for September 2018 from Junior Infants to 6th class. Anyone interested in enrolling their child should contact the school on 086 4183558 or by emailing Catherine Barry at principal@twomilecns.ie.

Ellen DeGeneres’ Star-Studded 60th Birthday

Ellen DeGeneres has shared exclusive details about her star-studded 60th birthday party over the weekend. On Saturday, many of Hollywood’s A-list stars were spotted at Ellen’s birthday bash in Los Angeles. Oprah, Reese Witherspoon, Pink, Adele, Chrissy Teigen, John Legend, Amy Schumer and her boyfriend Chris Fischer, Olivia Munn, Jennifer Aniston and Meghan Trainor were among the celeb guests in attendance at the party. During Tuesday’s episode of The Ellen Show, the talk show host said that her wife Portia de Rossi put the incredible party together and Ellen revealed all of the stars who performed at the celebration for free! “Parties you know can get expensive, you know that right? Especially when there’s a lot of people,” Ellen told her audience. “So here’s a money saving tip for all of you, don’t hire a band, invite all your musician friends. And it turns out they’ll just perform for free.” Pharrell Williams, French Montana, Pink, Alessia Cara and Melissa Etheridge were among the performers who took the stage at the party on Saturday. “Here’s another tip, make sure you invite Reese Witherspoon because, now I see why she’s such an amazing producer, she’s the one who—and I won’t say forced—but strongly suggested everyone should perform,” Ellen shared along with a photo of Reese at the party.

Stockton’s Wing Back At The INEC

After a very successful run of gigs, Stockton’s Wing, one of Ireland’s most prolific and enduring bands, celebrate their extraordinary 40-year career as they know best – onstage at the INEC Killarney on Feb 24. Featuring regular members - Mike Hanrahan (vocals and guitar), Paul Roche (flute and tin whistle), Steve Cooney (guitar, bass and didgeridoo) and Tommy Hayes (percussion, bodhrán and spoons) – the band will be completed by young Clare musicians Tara Breen (fiddle) and Karol Lynch (banjo/mandolin). Fans will be treated to a back catalogue of hits including much loved classic ‘Beautiful Affair’ - voted one of the top 75 songs in the history of RTÉ radio and chosen by Today FM listeners as number 7 in their top 20 poll of Irish songs. The name Stockton’s Wing is from a Bruce Springsteen song, ‘Backstreets’ from the Born to Run album. “Slow dancing on a moonlit street at Stockton’s Wing, where desperate lovers park to meet the last of the Duke Street Kings.”

Back in 1977, in Ennis, the fledgling five-member group, including All-Ireland champions Paul Roche, Maurice Lennon, Kieran Hanrahan and Tommy Hayes with Tony Callinan, won the traditional section of a Guinness sponsored talent competition in Limerick. (The rock section was won by a little-known group from Mount Temple School called U2.) Their sound evolved over the years into a thrilling blend of traditional and contemporary Irish music and song, performed with power and precision by some of the finest musicians in Ireland. Along the way, Stockton’s Wing released 12 albums, played concert halls and festivals from America, Canada, Europe and Australia and penned some of this country’s most enduring classic anthems including ‘Beautiful Affair’, ‘Walk Away’ and ‘New Clare Revival’. Tickets are €22.90 and are on sale now. To book yours, visit inec.ie or call 064 6671555. For further information please contact Ceara Scanlon on 064 6671555 or ceara.scanlon@ inec.ie.

The Schools Outreach Programme will once again visit schools in the lead up to the festival, showcasing the Sliabh Luachra tradition of music and set dancing. A Weekly Round-Up Of News + Views From Kerry And Around

19-Year-Old Charged With Valentine’s Day Massacre A 19-year-old man has been charged with 17 counts of premeditated murder following a mass shooting at Marjory Stoneman Douglas high school in Parkland, Florida. Nikolas Cruz, a former student who had been expelled in 2017 for disciplinary reasons, allegedly entered the school with an AR-15 assault rifle on Wednesday and opened fire. Twelve people died inside the high school, two more outside the building, one in a nearby street and two in hospital, the Broward County Sheriff, Scott Israel, confirmed yesterday. He also added that the gunman had been armed with at least one assault rifle and “countless magazines”. Questions have been raised about Cruz’s prior behaviour and whether or not the attack could have been prevented. A

user named Nikolas Cruz left a comment on a YouTube video in September saying “I’m going to be a professional school shooter”. The person who uploaded the video, a bail bondsman from Mississippi named Ben Bennight, alerted the FBI and the comment was subsequently removed by YouTube. The FBI followed up with Bennight in person and asked if he knew anything about the Nikolas Cruz who made the comment. He said he didn’t and they left. In the wake of Wednesday’s massacre, agents from the Bureau again made contact with Bennight, which could suggest that the comment may, indeed, have been posted by the alleged shooter. The tragic incident in Florida brings the number of American children who have been killed in mass shootings since 1989 to 97.

Trump Corner

Shooting Survivor Slams Trump On Twitter A student from the high school where 17 students and teachers were killed by a lone gunman wielding an AR-15 has called US President Donald Trump a “f****** piece of s***”. The Twitter user Sarah (@chaddiedabaddie) was responding to Trump’s tweet of condolence in the wake of the United States’ latest mass shooting. “My prayers and condolences to the families of the victims of the terrible Florida shooting,” Trump tweeted. “No child, teacher or anyone else should ever feel unsafe in an American school.” Sarah responded angrily: ““I don’t want your condolences you f****** price (sic) of s***, my friends and teachers were shot. Multiple of my fellow classmates are dead. Do some-

Never fails to entertain

thing instead of sending prayers. Prayers won’t fix this. But Gun control will prevent it from happening again.” By Thursday evening her reply had been retweeted 155,000 times and been liked by 372,000 people. Trump later suggested that the suspected shooter, a 19-year-old former student of Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School named Nikolas Cruz, was mentally disturbed. “So many signs that the Florida shooter was mentally disturbed, even expelled from school for bad and erratic behavior. Neighbors and classmates knew he was a big problem. Must always report such instances to authorities, again and again!” Ironically, one of Trump’s first acts as president involved rolling back an Obama-era regulation that would have made it harder for people with histories of mental illness to buy guns.

Ramaphosa Takes Over As President Of South Africa

Cyril Ramaphosa has been appointed as president of South Africa - less than 16 hours after his predecessor Jacob Zuma resigned. Ramaphosa, a wealthy businessman and former anti-apartheid activist, was elected unopposed and immediately pledged to tackle corruption across the country. “I truly feel humbled to have been given this great privilege to be able to serve our people,” he said after he was sworn into the post by South African Chief

Justice Mogoeng Mogoeng, who had earlier read out the former president’s resignation letter. “I will try very hard not to disappoint the people of South Africa,” he said, adding that the issue of corruption is on “our radar screen”. Ramaphosa faces a struggle to revitalise growth, create jobs and eradicate a corruption in a country still divided by race and inequality more than 20 years after the end of white minority rule.

No Killarney To Farranfore Bypass Until 2022 Kerry Has One Pub For Every 344 People

Kerry has been named as the county with the second highest number of pubs per person in Ireland. With one watering hole for every 344 people, Kerry was second only to Mayo where there are 323 people for every pub. Tipperary came in third (350) with Clare (383) and Cavan/Monaghan completing the top five. There are 435 bars in Kerry in total.

Surprisingly, Dublin, by far Ireland’s most populous county, isn’t the county with the most bars. That honour goes to our neighbours, Cork, where there are a whopping 955 public houses. Dublin only has a pub for every 1,649 people. Laois has the least amount of taverns in the Republic with just 123, which works out at one for every 713 people.

The proposed Lissivigeen-Farranfore bypass, which was unveiled in 2004 before being shelved in 2011, will be considered for development “in the post-2022 period”, according to Minister for Transport, Tourism and Sport Shane Ross. Minister Ross was responding to a question yesterday from Danny Healy-Rae TD, who insisted it was a very important scheme that should be prioritised by the government. “Progressing it has many merits,” Healy-Rae said. “Killarney is choked by traffic during the summer months, with people trying to get in and out of the town. In a way, that is good as it shows that people want to come to Killarney. However, we need to cater for them. There is congestion on the Muckross Road, with traffic from Kenmare and Glengarriff trying to get through

the town. Traffic has to pass through the town to get to Limerick or any other part of the country. There is also traffic from Killorglin and Liebherr, as well as to O’Shea’s Funeral Home in the evenings, when workers travel up Dr Hans-Liebherr Road and St Anne’s Road. The volume of traffic on the bypass is at the maximum. It is used by 18,600 vehicles per day.” Minister Ross acknowledged the problem but said the capital plan, as it stands, does not make provision for the Farranfore to Killarney project. “Four years is too long to wait given the level of traffic congestion in Killarney,” Healy-Rae said. Improving traffic and infrastructure was one of the main recommendations made by visitors in the Tourist Economic Impact Review, which was published this week (see pages 6, 11 & 12).

Woman Follows Handbag Drones To Tackle Through X-Ray Machine Illegal Dumping

A passenger at a railway station in Dongguan, China climbed into an X-ray machine during a security check to make sure her handbag wasn’t stolen. Security staff at the station were left flabbergasted when they saw an image of a woman appearing on their X-ray machine display on Sunday. The woman in question had put her suitcases through the machine before walking through

the security checkpoint with the smaller handbag in her hand. When staff told her that she would have to put her handbag through as well, she reluctantly returned to the front of the machine, placed the bag on the conveyor belt and, to the shock of onlookers, climbed on herself. Dongguan Railway Station staff have advised passengers not to ride the X-ray machines as the radiation given off by the scanners can be harmful.

Describing illegal dumping as ‘economic and environmental treason’, the Minister for Communications, Climate Action and Environment, Denis Naughten, is allocating €2 million this year for a targeted crackdown on illegal dumping black spots across the country. Covert surveillance and smart technology including aerial imagery from drones and satellites as well as the installation of CCTV cameras and better enforcement and prosecution actions will form a central part of this year’s crackdown, confirmed Minister Naughten. Last year’s Anti-Dumping Initiative saw €1.3

million spent on 230 clean-up and restorative work led by community, environmental and sporting groups across the country. Over 2.8 thousand tonnes of waste was removed from public and private lands, beaches, walking routes and residential areas. Minister Naughten and Minister Ring are today announcing that applications are now open for Local Authorities and community groups to apply under the 2018 Anti-Dumping Initiative with an increased funding allocation of €2 million. “Ireland is fighting back and reclaiming our rivers, beaches, parks and walkways from illegal dumpers,” said Minister Naughten.

Festival

Killarney Looking Good For St Patrick’s Festival Plans are well underway for this years St Patrick’s Festival Cill Airne. This year’s theme, which was announced last week in the Killarney Advertiser, is ‘Killarney You’re Looking Good’, a celebration of 60 years of the National Tidy Towns competition. The committee, under the auspices of the Killarney Chamber of Tourism and Commerce, have been busy behind the scenes putting together a fun-packed family festival for visitors and locals alike. Of course, the highlight is the St Patrick’s Day parade which this year will commence from Mission Road taking in East Avenue Road, College Street, Plunkett Street, Main Street, New Street and finishing at Beech Road car park. The parade will start at 2pm sharp and we are promised plenty of entertainment and audience participation along the route. As in previous years, the progressive committee will be “greening” Killarney with local landmarks going green for the weekend. The public will have the final say on the most attractive “greened” building or landmark. Voluntary Chairperson Paul Sherry said: “We are calling on all clubs, associations, businesses and voluntary groups to get your thinking caps on, open your minds and get the creative juices flowing. You have heard it a million times and more, ‘there is no place like Killarney’. Let’s illustrate this to the world and join us on St Patrick’s Day.” Application forms for the parade are included in this week’s Killarney Advertiser and are also available from the Town Hall and Killarney Chamber of Tourism and Commerce offices. More details to follow in the coming weeks including the Grand Marshall announcement, entertainment details and competitions.

An 18-minute Eurowave session is equivalent to over 200 perfect sit-ups, says Jill Duggan of Killarney Toning & Beauty Studio

Hate sit-ups? Try Eurowave Eurowave: inch loss and tightening for stomach and thighs and bum It has become widely accepted that core strength is very important to our overall body health. You use your core in everything you do. Fewer people suffer from prolonged and nagging back pain once their core is strong. While many new exercises do improve your core strength (Swiss ball, Pilates, wobble board etc.), Eurowave still does it faster and safer! Do you hate doing sit-ups, crunches or leg lifts because it hurts, or they don’t work? Do you feel too intimidated to work out at the gym, or too busy to work out at home? Most common exercises work only the superficial muscle. Eurowave penerates the deepest part of your muscle which enables you to get a full muscle contraction, not just a superficial muscle contraction. Inch loss, muscle tone or core strength, Eurowave does it all! How does Eurowave work? The Eurowave utilizes a pulsating faradic wave, which “works out” the chosen muscle group. Eurowave works the same as an isometric exercise. The 18-minute abdominal session is completely effortless and is equivalent to over 200 perfect situps! Unique to the machine is the “Duty Cycle” which allows variation in depth of penetration of the wave, and in the expansion and contraction of the targeted muscle group. How does EMS work and what are the benefits? Electro Muscle Stimulation is a very safe and simple procedure in which micro currents are applied to the muscle fibers of a treated area, stimulating them and making them work. The stimulation creates huge energy demand in the muscles. To satisfy this demand, muscles utilize

surrounding fats as the source of energy, burning them the same as they do during a regular workout. Basically, Electro Muscle Stimulation is an extensive fitness therapy: fifteen minutes of electro muscular stimulation equals forty-eight hours of nonstop gym exercise. As a result of Electro Muscle Stimulation treatments, muscles and skin become tight and fats are eliminated. Besides firming muscles, which results in an incredible loss of inches, electro stimulation also increases metabolism, fluid circulation and oxygenation of a treated area, making it a very effective tool for anti-cellulite treatment. Where did electro muscle stimulation (EMS) originate? Electro Muscle Stimulation (EMS) is a technology that was first developed in the early 1970s for astronauts who needed a fast reshaping of muscles after returning from outer space. Since then, numerous research studies have been performed using EMS. Bruce Lee used EMS extensively to increase speed and hardness. The US Medical Advisory Committee has allowed the use of Electro Muscle Stimulation (EMS) systems by athletes since the 1972 Olympics. Bodybuilders, professional athletes, physiotherapists, and sports doctors use Electro Muscle Stimulation systems to supplement their regular workout routines. Many doctors use Electro Muscle Stimulation units to rehabilitate muscles following injury and to ease patients’ chronic muscle spasms and pain. European beauty centers have been using Electro Muscle Stimulation for years.

Garden Magic A Bounty Of Fresh Veg? Start Sowing Now Longer evenings, brighter mornings, cheerful birdsong… Spring is here! What does that mean for every gardener? Seeds! Indeed, now is the time for sowing in order to have that bounty of fresh veg we all enjoy. There is so much choice available these days. I counted 12 varieties of lettuce and 18 varieties of tomato on one display! How and what to choose? Old reliables are just that, reliable…. But many new varieties are disease resistant and, often, tastier. So experiment, and keep notes, is what I would advise! Also, sow veggies which are not readily available, such as kohl rabi, heritage tomatoes, purple kale or purple sprouting broccoli. So, what to sow where, and when? In the glasshouse or tunnel, you can start sowing all herbs, shallots, celery and onions. If you have heated beds, lettuce, salads, beans and peas can be started off. Plenty of seeds can be started off indoors, either on the windowsill in a tray, or in propagators, if you want to be a month ahead. Even if you don’t have a garden but would still like to grow your own salad veg, larger propagators, called grow houses, are ideal. They are usually on legs at the height of a windowsill with clear,

vented covers. If sowing directly into the open ground, March is the month for you. However, most preparatory work can be undertaken now. Beds can be dug over and compost, chicken pellets, Growmore or old manure incorporated. Rake to a fine tilth and cover with some old cardboard to keep the heat in and the weeds off. If space permits, putting up a polytunnel is a great idea. It will allow you to work and grow without the weather affecting you or the crop. Seed potatoes are also arriving, the earlies such as Homeguard and British Queens can be chitted now. Chitting is a way of starting off potatoes while the soil is still too cold. Just place your seed potatoes in egg trays and allow to sprout. Soil temperatures should be at least 8 degrees for potato planting. A soil thermometer is another handy gadget to have! If there are late frosts, it is wise to take precautions and cover seedlings with horticultural Fleece. When using fleece, whether in a glasshouse or outside, remember to tuck the edges in so cold air cannot enter, and heat from the ground is kept in. Using fleece to protect rhododendron and camellia flower buds is also a good idea.

Driverless Delivery Vans Two former Google engineers have announced they have entered the race to create a self-driving delivery van. Dave Ferguson and Jiajun Zhu reportedly left the tech giant’s selfdriving project to work on their dream of realising an autonomous delivery vehicle. Claimed to be far easier to develop and less complicated to build than a passenger-carrying driverless car, the Nuro van is only half as wide as a typical family car. Featuring a configurable load bay that can be set-up to carry lockers, or a heated or cooled load space, Zhu and Ferguson envisage the Nuro will deliver anything from groceries to pizzas and dry cleaning. So far, the small van has taken just 18 months to develop. Helping the pair cut

development corners, the small delivery van has been designed to operate only in urban conditions. That means the van only needs to harness the power of short-range instead of the extra hardware needed for a car to operate at high speed. Claimed to be in limited service by the end of the year, the Nuro is set to go head-to-head with Toyota, which revealed its e-Palette concept this year. However, the e-Palette will not enter real-world trials until the Tokyo 2020 Olympic Games. That said, the Japanese-car maker has confirmed Amazon, Uber and Pizza Hut, along with Mazda and a Chinese ridesharing company, are already backing the e-Palette. This is only around the corner.

Rally Sweden After the thrills and spills of Rallye Monte-Carlo the WRC heads north for Rally Sweden this weekend, venturing into the deep frozen and remote forests of Sweden and Norway to tackle stages around Karlstad, Röjden, Hagfors and Torsby. Monte Carlo winner Sebastien Ogier has pinpointed who he sees as his biggest rivals for victory at this weekend’s Rally Sweden as he aims to preserve his perfect start to the 2018 season. Ogier, who failed to win a single stage at last year’s Rally Sweden on his way to third place behind Jari-Matti Latvala and Ott Tanak, says his Scandinavian rivals will be his biggest cause for concern this weekend. While Latvala looks for a second straight win in Sweden he will face intense competition from Toyota teammate and fellow Finnish driver Esapekka Lappi while Ogier also tips Hyundai’s Andreas Mikkelsen, Citroen’s Mads Ostberg and his own M-Sport Ford teammate Teemu Suninen - all from the Scandinavian region and familiar with racing on snow - as his dangerous rivals at the iconic event. Coming into this weekend Chris Meeke, co-driven by Paul Nagle, is eager for his Citroen Total Abu Dhabi WRT squad to keep pushing the development of the C3 WRC machine having felt fortunate to leave Rallye Monte-Carlo with fourth place and the Power Stage victory. Kris Meeke says his Monte Carlo Rally Power Stage win does not hide the fact the Citroen World Rally Championship outfit needs things to “completely change” to win the event again. He said the result was slightly deceptive after a disappointing event in which he was “nowhere” on pace. Going into this weekend on a surface that is not best suited to them, it will be damage limitation - an approach that worked in Monte Carlo.

Samaritans Kerry Launch Volunteer Recruitment Campaign Samaritans in Kerry are launching a major volunteer recruitment campaign to encourage people to get involved with the charity, give something back to the local community and help change people’s lives. Established in Ireland in 1962, there are now 20 Samaritans branches across the country with over 1,800 active volunteers on call 24 hours a day, seven days a week. Samaritans are best known for the vital support given to callers on its 24-hour telephone service, but volunteers are also on hand to offer support by SMS, email, face-to-face in communities, through written correspondence and in prisons. Listeners of all ages and walks of life are among those who dedicate three hours a week to those most in need. John, a beekeeper, has been a volunteer with Samaritans for over 30 years. He said: “I’ve got far more from it than I’ve ever given. It has been enriching in so many aspects of life. Listening, which seemingly is nothing, means so much to so many. It’s enriching to find so many people from all walks of life working within the movement.” Claire, a mountain runner, began volunteering just a year ago. She said: “The training is intense and

long but leaves you ready to start listening and hopefully help someone who at that time needs to talk. Samaritans is a unique listening service in that we don’t give advice, we listen and do so for as long as the caller needs to talk. The power of this can only be fully appreciated when you start your journey in the Ops room taking calls and answering texts and emails. “I have learnt so many new skills and will continue to do so as a Samaritan. Once you finish your training that is just the start of your journey.” As well as supporting people emotionally, Samaritans volunteers undertake outreach in the community, fundraise, and take on administrative roles, all of which are vital to ensure that the service remains available round the clock, every day of the year. Trained listeners also give face to face support in branches, as well as festivals and events. John Publicity officer for The Kerry branch of the Samaritans said: “There is no better feeling in the world than knowing at the end of your shift that you have truly helped someone in need just by listening, not giving advice or being judgemental but giving the caller time and space to express how they are feeling. Its without doubt a unique and self rewarding role as a volunteer knowing

Do not stand at my grave and cry, I am not there, I did not die. You are always on our mind, We think about you and remember happy times, The laughs and stories that you told us, Are memories fond and true, But the greatest day is yet to come, When we will meet again. A part of my heart he took with him, But his love he left me to keep, So we will never really be parted, The bond between us is too deep.

Always in our thoughts And forever in our hearts.

They say there is a reason, They say that time will heal, But neither time or reason, Will change the way we feel. For no one knows the heartache, That lies beyond our smiles, No one knows how many times, We have broken down and cried. We want to tell you something, So there won’t be any doubt, You’re so wonderful to think of, But so hard to be without. We cannot bring the old days back, When we were all together, The family chain is broken now, But memories live forever. Missed and loved everyday by your loving wife Kay and son Derry Jnr Anniversary Mass in St.Mary’s Cathedral on 22nd February at 6.15pm.

Special thanks are due to the wonderful management and staff of Heather Lee Nursing Home, who cared for Sean with unceasing dedication and tenderness, and to Dr Emer Gill for her consistent care and commitment. We also extend our condolences to John’s extended family members and friends, of whom there are many across the rowing and GAA fraternity in Killarney. John was widely known and regarded in civic, sporting and community circles. Within the rowing community, John will be best known as an oarsman, committee member and lifelong volunteer with Commercial Rowing Club. We on the club’s committee had the pleasure of working with John over the last number of years and his energy and drive will be an inspiration to us all. He was instrumental in allowing us to revive the club and win its first men’s trophy in 37 yrs at Killarney Regatta last July 2017. He will be sadly missed and fondly remembered. John was centrally involved with a number of sporting publications, in-

cluding the histories of Killarney Regatta and Spa GAA in addition to the Story of the O’Donoghue Cup. His contribution to the staging and running of the Killarney Regatta was nothing short of immense, with successive decades of service to the Regatta committee. John excelled in the role of Regatta PRO, with an unrivalled knowledge of the long and proud history of rowing in Killarney. In addition to his tireless work as a psychiatric nurse and farmer, John will be fondly remembered for his voluntary contributions and service to a host of local bodies, extending beyond the GAA and rowing. He will be sadly missed and fondly remembered. Our thoughts and prayers are with John’s wife Sheila, his five children and grandchildren.

Scotts Lakers v LYIT:

Five Things To Watch Out For Silverware could be on the horizon for the Lakers but a win tomorrow is crucial, writes Adam Moynihan

A win woul make it a d two-horse title race

n 1B National League Divgaisl io IT Done Scotts Lakers v LY ry 17 at 7.30pm Saturday, Februa ) and Leisure Centre (Killarney Sports

1. Five in a row? After an inconsistent first half of the season, the Lakers finally seem to have found their feet in the National League. The 65-60 win over Sligo in the final game of 2017 has been followed up with impressive victories over LIT (97-77), the Titans (69113) and, most recently, Sligo again (75-81). That six-point road win last weekend was particularly encouraging as the All-Stars played quite well and provided a stern challenge to the visiting Lakers right up to the final minute. Antuan Bootle had 24 points and 11 rebounds in another dominant display while Englishman Dailian Mason added 15. Andrew Fitzgerald and Mark Greene also chipped in with 13 points each. 2. Lakers can make it a two-horse race The Lakers currently find themselves at the summit of Division 1B with Kilkenny three points behind with a game in hand. LYIT are a further three points back in third so a win on Saturday will send the

Lakers nine points clear of them with three games to play. That would very much make it a two-horse title race between the Lakers and Kilkenny, who face each other in the Auracle on the last day of the regular season. Cormac O’Donoghue’s team will also be looking for a bit of payback as the Ulstermen defeated the Lakers back in October by a single poin 3. LYIT out of form LYIT make the long, long trip down from Donegal on the back of two consecutive defeats. Since the league was divided into two after Christmas, they’ve lost to Sligo (94-80) and also to Kilkenny (58-81). Another defeat this weekend would all but end their Division 1B aspirations. Tomorrow’s clash with the Lakers is the first leg of a double header for Chaz Walter and co. as they face the LIT Celtics in Limerick on Sunday.

4. Bootle continues to be the focal point Antuan Bootle has been great at times this season and with Justin Tuason recovering from surgery on a hand injury, the 6’8” powerhouse is guaranteed maximum floor time. Tuason and Bootle had shared minutes earlier in the season but now the Lakers need the big Bahamian-American to be consistently on it. He has certainly done well of late, averaging 23.75 points over the last four games. 5. Another great show at the Auracle After a month-long break and with a nice piece of silverware on the horizon, Killarney’s basketball fans are expected to turn out in force tomorrow evening for their team’s second last home league game of the season. Another great night of entertainment lies ahead at the Killarney Sports and Leisure Centre.

Lakers Earn Three Crucial Points In Sligo Words & Pics: Eamonn Keogh

Sligo All-Stars 75-81 Scotts Lakers The Scotts Lakers remain top of the Division 1B table following another impressive win against the Sligo All-Stars in Mercy College, Sligo last Saturday night. Despite trailing by ten points at an early stage, the Killarney side gradually came back into the game to make it a closely contested encounter before pulling away in the final quarter to claim a well-earned victory on the road. Sligo paraded new American Eric Kittel for this match and he made an early impression as the home side knocked down six three-pointers in the opening quarter to enjoy a 25-15 lead. Scotts Lakers responded well with Antuan Bootle making his presence felt while Andrew Fitzgerald, Dailian Mason, Dan Griffin and Cian Clernon added big baskets as the visitors turned it around to lead 35-34 midway through the second quarter. Mark Greene was also in outstanding form as Lakers stayed in front to lead 45-42 at half time. The Killarney side maintained their advantage to lead 5652 midway through the third quarter but Sligo bounced back through Mark Chambers and Eric Kittel and the home side led 58-56 with three minutes left in the third quarter. With the home supporters fully

behind them, Sligo held on to a narrow advantage before a big three-pointer from Scotts Lakers captain Philip O’Connor levelled matters at 61 points each as the game entered the final quarter. The Killarney side stepped it up in the closing period with Bootle, Mason, Fitzgerald, Griffin and Greene all on target to open up a 71-65 lead with four minutes remaining. It was evenly contested after this as Sligo matched the Lakers basket for basket but just couldn’t get close enough. The Killarney side secured victory with insurance baskets from the free throw line from Mark Greene and Andrew Fitzgerald. Overall it was a very impressive win for Coach Cormac O’Donoghue and the ten players he had on duty on the night. Four players finished on double figures with Antuan Bootle leading the way on 21 points followed by Dailian Mason 15, Andrew Fitzgerald 13 and Mark Greene 13. Dan Griffin, Philip O’Connor and Cian Clernon were also impressive while Paul Clarke, Mark O’Shea and Con O’Mahony also contributed handsomely to the victory. Sligo All-Stars shot 13 three-pointers on the night compared to just six from Scotts Lakers. Top scorers for the home side were Mark Chambers 20, Eric Kittel 19 and Tobi Brockmann 13.

Celts Dumped Out Of FAI By Ruthless North End Words: Adam Moynihan Pics: Konrad Paprocki

FAI Junior Cup Last 16 Killarney Celtic 1-4 North End United (Celtic Park)

Killarney Celtic’s FAI Junior Cup dreams are over for another year at least as they fell to a crushing 4-1 defeat to Wexford side North End United on Sunday. Last year’s beaten semi-finalists appeared to be in the driving seat when Peter McCarthy gave them a first half lead but the visitors took charge in the second half, firing in four goals without reply. Speaking after the game, Celtic manager Celtic Eoghan Donnellan admitted that North End were “far better” than his side in the second half. “In the first half I thought we were well in the game,” he said. “We went in at half time 1-0 up and I suppose the only unfortunate thing was that we didn’t get a second goal. But in the second half they were just a different team. “They’re a top class side. They have a lot of experience, a lot of guys in their late 20s… They’re a very strong team physically, very quick and very good in transition.” After an impressive first half showing, all of the home team’s hard work was undone in the opening stages of the second period and Donnellan felt that was the turning point. “The first 15 minutes of the second half probably cost us. They got a goal from a deflection and another five minutes later, and we dropped our heads a little bit. But look, we’ll learn from it.” His players don’t have much time to lick their wounds. Tomorrow afternoon they’ll face Waterford Crystal away in the 5th round of the Munster Junior Cup and the Celtic boss says it’s sure to be a difficult one. “It’s a tough game. They’re a really good side and they’ll be hard to beat at home. It’s always difficult after a defeat to pull yourself up again for next weekend.” Meanwhile, in what promises to be the tie of the round, Celtic have been drawn to play Dingle away in the last 16 of the Greyhound Bar KO Cup. Holders Killarney Athletic will host neighbours Mastergeeha while either Cedar Galaxy or Castleisland will play Ballybunion.

“We Can Have No Complaints About The Dingle Result”

The reigning champions are facing an uphill battle to make the league final, writes Athletic’s Adam Moynihan

Premier A

6-1 Killarney Dingle Bay Rovers ) (Mounthawk Park

Athletic

I would say that it was a just a bad day at the office for Athletic on Sunday but that would imply that our other days at the office have been fine. They haven’t. We’ve played 13 games so far this season and I’d say you could count on one hand the amount of times we’ve actually played well for a full 90 minutes. That’s obviously nowhere near good enough for a team expecting to challenge for the league. We can certainly have no complaints about the Dingle result. We were simply opened up by a better team on the day. The likes of Luke Burgess and Joe Sheehy ran the show in midfield and we gave Paudie Quinn way too much space up front.

I’ve said it before but our defence in the run-in last year was very solid. This year, for whatever reason, we can’t keep a clean sheet. We’ve had very little consistency in terms of personnel, which is probably a factor, but regardless of who starts it’s down to the players on the pitch - from 1 to 11 - to stay focussed and get the job done. So far, we haven’t done that. This year was always going to be harder, especially with Celtic and Dingle improving their squads, so if anything we needed to up our intensity, be more committed and train harder. So far, we haven’t done any of those things either. After this result and the points we’ve dropped

against Castleisland and Listowel, we’re now very much playing catch up. Celtic and Dingle are looking strong and you’d have to say that they’re firm favourites to make the league final. There are six games to go and realistically we will probably need to win the six of them to finish in the top two. That sounds like a tall order but we’re 100% capable of turning it around - if we address some issues and pull our heads out of our a****. There’s no shame in losing to good teams but at the moment we’re just not doing ourselves justice. Sunday’s result is a blow. It’s up to us to decide whether it signals the end of our title defence or the beginning.

North Korean Cheerleaders Turn Heads At Olympics

All the talk beforehand was of North and South Korean athletes competing under the same flag but it has been the North’s cheerleaders who have captured worldwide attention at the Winter Olympics in South Korea. The 229 strong, all-female cheer squad were greeted with a mix of awe and incredulity when they took their seats at the Kwandong Hockey Centre in

Gangneung. Dressed in matching red uniforms, the women performed synchronised cheering routines throughout the Unified Korean ice hockey team’s game against Sweden. After each Swedish goal, the cheerleaders chanted “cheer up”. Korea lost 8-0. The welcome was overwhelmingly warm in the arena as some South Koreans took pictures and posed for selfies with the women.

While some have hailed the cheerleaders as a force for good who have eased tensions between two countries that are still officially at war, others say they are merely a cog in Kim Jon-Un’s propaganda machine. Despite appearances, it hasn’t been all smiles for the group. In 2005, 21 cheerleaders were imprisoned for speaking about what they saw on their visit to the South.

Snowy Start To Super League Words: Adam Moynihan The 2018 East Kerry Super League kicked off last weekend and despite the wintery conditions, a couple of teams in particular ran up some very summery scores. The snow didn’t seem to affect Glenflesk a whole pile as they racked up a monstrous 7-14 against Firies in Barraduff. The hosts led 2-11 to no score at half time and there wasn’t much respite for Firies in the second half - they ended up managing just four points in total. Dr Crokes had a similarly emphatic victory over old foes Rathmore on Sunday morning, Pat O’Shea’s side running out 5-18 to 1-2 winners in Lewis Road. Elsewhere Fossa had a 1-14 to 0-5 win over Currow and Kilcummin had a narrow one-point victory over Gneeveguilla. Clubs always treat this competition as a kind of pre-season tournament so not too much should be read into the results, but it’s better to be winning games than losing them, even at this early stage of the campaign.

Eight Tries For Ireland In Italian Rout

Rugby News ...

Words: Liam Murphy

After another very interesting weekend in the NatWest 6 Nations, a well-earned break is on the cards. There were some very good games on offer with Ireland first up and Joe Schmidt’s side continued their winning run at a packed Aviva Stadium in Dublin. Ireland took on Conor O’Shea’s Italy in a very onesided match, winning 56 points to 19. Ireland scored eight tries on the day with Robbie Henshaw and Jacob Stockdale each scoring a brace while Conor Murray, Bundi Aki, Keith Earls and captain Rory Best also scored on the day. Sexton was

sublime from the boot as was Joe Carberry who replaced Sexton in the second half. A good result for Ireland but the Irish camp will be bitterly disappointed with shipping 19 points, especially when the points difference could decide the championship on St. Patrick’s Day. They will also be disappointed with Robbie Henshaw having to leave the field with gas and air after damaging his shoulder. Tadhg Furlong also limped off with a hamstring injury - two huge players for Ireland. At Twickenham, England beat Wales 12-6 as

Eddie Jones’ mind games last week looked to have worked. Meanwhile Scotland beat France at Murrayfield on a 32-26 scoreline, bouncing back from their embarrassing defeat to Wales the previous weekend. On February 23, Ireland have a second home match in a row as they host Warren Gatland’s Wales. Meanwhile France will be looking for their first win against Italy and Scotland host neighbours England (both February 24). All in all another mouth-watering weekend of rugby ahead.

Pirates Too Strong For KRFC

Killarney unfortunately had to concede home advantage due to an unplayable pitch and so travelled to one of the competition’s heavyweight teams, Cobh Pirates, last Sunday. Conditions were very poor and suited the bigger and stronger home team. Killarney were on the back foot for most of the first half but the entire team tackled, re-grouped and counter-rucked against the more physical opposition. Gary Randles, Thomas Clifford, Matt

McAuliffe and Craig McKenzie Vass all made try saving tackles but, in the 20th minute, Cobh’s Daragh McCarthy scored a try which was duly converted by Cian Aherne. Killarney struggled to win lineout ball and this proved costly with the concession of another try in the last play of the first half, Daragh McCarthy again the scorer. Killarney responded courageously during the second half but found it difficult to penetrate, and Cobh full back Bailey Jones scored the clinch-

ing try after 50 minutes. Killarney came close to scoring late on but the ball did not bounce kindly for Mark Sheehan following a clever kick ahead by Peter Walsh. Stand out performers for Cobh were Munster Academy players Jack McCarthy and Edwin Edoughbo. Killarney full back Gary Randles again impressed and Peter Walsh, Cian Murphy and Jose Ferrero tried valiantly to break out for KRFC. The team gained invaluable experience and learned from this difficult

outing against one of the favourites for outright honours. With two home games remaining, Killarney are still in the running to qualify for the quarter-finals. Team: Matt McAuliffe, Brendan O’Donoghue, Robert Nealon, John McCarthy, Evan Mannix, Cian Murphy, Pádrag Talbot, Craig McKenzie Vass, Sam Casey, Jose Salinas, Adam Cronin, Peter Walsh, Donnchadh Grealy, Thomas Clifford, Jose Ferrero, Denis Koyun, Mark Sheehan, Gary Randles, James Kennelly and Jack O’Connell.

Killarney Golf and Fishing Club Club Captain Derry McCarthy has pointed out that this continuous spell of extremely bad weather stretching back almost to Christmas, has once again played havoc with our Competition Programme, and has resulted in last Sunday’s proposed Competition which was scheduled to be a fund-raiser for our Club Male Voice Choir being cancelled. This competition has now been re-scheduled for Sunday next, the 18th of February. The competition Officer for the day will be Competition Secretary Tommy Galvin. The format for this Competition will be a singles Stableford competition with two “shotgun” starts, at 8.30 A.M. and 12.30 P.M. and will be played on Mahony’s Point Course. The inclement weather, although not hitting us as badly

as it has in other parts of the Country remains as our principal topic of conversation, and will inevitably result in a re-jigging of our Competition Programme.
