PAGE SIX Louise Still In Coma In Spain Words: Adam Moynihan The entire community has been urged to band together and support the family of a 21-year-old Killarney woman who is currently in a coma in Spain. Louise Lynch from Radrinagh, Spa was involved in a horrific car accident near La Albuera, Badajoz on February 24. Two weeks later, she is still in intensive care suffering from serious internal, cranial and abdominal injuries as well as many fractured bones. Her condition is described as being critical. The incident, which involved three vehicles and eight people, has also left two others, including Louise’s friend, in hospital. One passenger was tragically killed. Shortly after the accident, Louise’s family flew out to Spain to be by her side in the Infanta Christina Hospital in Badajoz. Her father, Séamus, is originally from Milltown/Castlemaine and her mother, Nora (née Buckley), grew up in Radrinagh. Her brother, James, is a Leaving Cert student in St Brendan’s College while her sister, Marie, is studying nursing in UCC. Louise has been described by friends as being a very energetic person with a great of humour. She has always been very active in her community and has lined out for the Spa ladies in football. She is also a talented musician and has

represented Spa in Scór na nÓg. This is a tremendously difficult time for the Lynch family and any support our readers can offer would be greatly appreciated. A GoFundMe page has been set up by the family and Spa GAA to help with the enormous medical expenses and already €28,500 has been donated. If you are in a position to make a donation, please do.

59 More Homes For Killarney Clúid Housing and the Kerry County Council have announced another major social housing development in Killarney. The department of Housing, Planning and Local Government has granted approval for the acquisition of 59 homes at Oakwood, Rock Road. The units will be delivered through the Government’s Capital Advanced Leasing Facility (CALF). The 59 apartments to be delivered in Oakwood will provide much-needed housing for those on the county’s housing list. Part of an unfinished apartment complex, the apartments will undergo small-scale works to ensure they are ready for occupation before the end of 2018. This scheme is comprised of 44 one-bed apartments and 15 two-bed apartments spread over four floors. The building and units are disable-friendly, with wide doorways,

access ramps and designated parking spaces located directly outside. The news comes just a week after it was revealed that 61 houses are to be constructed at Derreen. Those homes are scheduled for completion before the end of 2019 and, when complete, will provide high quality social housing to families and single people on Kerry Coun-

ty Council’s housing list. The homes will include 22 two-bed houses and 39 three-bed houses – all constructed locally in Killarney. Mayor of Killarney Niall Kelleher welcomed the news regarding the acquisition of the properties at Oakwood.

“It’s a great news as this is property that’s already there and not being utilised,” he said. “It’s something that has been ongoing for quite a while and I’m delighted it has finally been approved. We have a large number of people in Killarney on the one and two-bed list. Some people are on that list for 10-11 years and it’s great that they’ll finally have places they’ll be able to call home.”

Mayor Kelleher: “People will finally have places they’ll be able to call home.”

Victorian Carriage From 1861 Restored For Parade Words: Adam Moynihan

This year’s St Patrick’s Day Parade Grand Marshall will be travelling in style thanks to a group of dedicated enthusiasts who have beautifully restored a Victorian era carriage. The vehicle, believed to be a Victorian Landau from 1861, was discovered on a scrap heap by Dermot Healy of Dermot Healy Motors. As the ‘before’ pictures show, it was very severely damaged but Dermot tasked members of the local Men’s Club with restoring the coach to its former glories. Mick Myers, Tom Ashe and Pat O’Brien, who joined via the South Kerry Development Partnership scheme, enlisted the help of Marguerita, a Mexican woman with experience in this line of work, and off they went. Speaking to the Advertiser this week, Mick admitted that they were mad to take the job on. “We didn’t know what

we were letting ourselves in for,” he said. “We were only making it up as we went along.” “Marguerita and her late husband used to restore coaches up in Kilcummin. Only for her, we hadn’t a hope.” The canopy proved especially tricky as the original one had been completely destroyed but, working off pictures they found online, the crew laboured tirelessly on the project for over six months. The results are astounding. The group expressed their gratitude to Pat and Timmy McGillicuddy, Brendan O’Sullivan Darcy of Killarney Welding, Torc Engineering and, of course, Dermot Healy, all of whom provided great assistance throughout the process. Locals will be able to catch a glimpse of the classy carriage on St Patrick’s Day when it will be used to transport the parade’s Grand Marshall, Yvonne Quill.

ROK Registration Issues Quickly Resolved

Registration for the Ring of Kerry Charity Cycle is open and issues experienced by some cyclists when trying to sign up were quickly resolved, according to PRO Cathal Walshe. A number of vexed would-be participants took to social media to criticise event organisers when they were unable to register, but Cathal says the situation was dealt with promptly. “Some cards weren’t being accepted but it was rectified fairly quickly,”

he confirmed. “But there’s no problem. It’s going smoothly enough now.” “We’re hoping for a successful year,” he continued. “It’s early yet but we’d be very optimistic that this year will be as good as any other year.” In 2018, funds raised by the popular cycle, which has raked in around €15 million for local charities since it started 35 years ago, will benefit 14 organisations instead of 10. TOWNTALK Greener St Patrick’s Day At Aghadoe Heights John Long Chairman Chapter 23 Credit Union (seated right) who presented 1st prize in the Chapter 23 U-13 Schools Quiz to Sinéad Olibhéar, Adam Ó Súilleabháin, Cameron Ó Rua and Daire Ó Briain of Gaelscoil Faithleann. Back: Christy Killeen, Secretary Chapter 23 CU, Jack Harrington, Principal Prionsais MacCurtain, teacher Treasa Uí Scannláin and John O’Regan, PRO Chapter 23 at the Institute of Technology Tralee on Sunday.

Gaelscoil Claim Credit Union Quiz Crown The luxury five star Aghadoe Heights Hotel & Spa will “go green” in more than one way this St Patrick’s Day. Joining in the country’s revelry, the hotel will not only be bathed in a shower of green light on March 17 but the team will also be launching their newly established initiative to be a more environmentally green business. The team will be working together to implement effective plans to make the hotel even more environmentally friendly, adding to the measures that are already in place. “At the top of the list is our aim to reduce our dependence on single use plastic,” said General Manager Niall Coffey. “With an ocean that is

struggling to cope with mass amounts of plastic and the devastating damage this is having on our planet, The Aghadoe Heights Hotel will join other environmentally friendly businesses and launch our ban on plastic straws.” From now on, the hotel will only be using environmentally friendly and fully biodegradable straws in its two popular restaurants, The Lake Room and The Heights Lounge. Aghadoe Heights Hotel & Spa is surrounded by some of the world’s most spectacular natural scenery and it is only fitting that it plays a role in giving back to the environment. More environmentally friendly initiatives will be launched on a monthly basis.

The Credit Union Quiz is always a hotly contested event and 2018 did not disappoint in this regard. At chapter level, Lissivigeen Nation School and Gaelscoil Faithleann were to take first and second place respectively in the U-13 category with Scoil Bhríde Loreto and Cullina National School taking the spoils in the U-11 category. All of these four teams progressed to the next round which, after a small snow delay, was held on Saturday last in the Tralee Institute of Technology at 4.30pm. With a very high standard on the day, the quiz finished in a tie

break situation. Gaelscoil Faithleann came out the victors in the U-13 category and will travel to Dublin, on Sunday April 8, for the All-Ireland Final. The team members are Sinéad Olibhéar, Cameron Ó Rua, Daire Ó Briain and Adam Ó Súilleabháin. This is the second year in a row that Gaelscoil Faithleann will be representing this district of the League of Credit Unions in the All Ireland Contest. Gaelscoil Faithleann have a proud tradition with the Tráth na gCeist, placing regularly and being crowned All-Ireland Champions in 2010. We wish them well on April 8.

Gleneagle Band To Play For Charity The Gleneagle Hotel will be the venue for a massed band concert on Sunday March 25 at 7.30pm as part of the Gleneagle Concert Band Annual Charity Concert. The Cobh Confraternity band will be guest artists this year. Each band will perform a selection of pieces individually before coming together at the end of the concert for an amazing massed band performance featuring over 100 musicians on stage. All proceeds from this concert will be allocated to South Kerry MS Association, Kerry Cancer Support Group, Enable Ireland Kerry Children Services and the Band Music Education Youth Programme. Band conductor Vincent Condon says: “We are really pleased to be collaborating with the South Kerry MS Association, Kerry Cancer Support Group and Enable Ireland Kerry Children Services at this year’s charity concert. We hope the public will come out in great numbers to support this worthwhile fundraising venture. “The band musically is in excellent form and the concert will also provide an opportunity to showcase the tremendous

work being done through our Music Education Youth Programme, which has benefited so many young people throughout the county for the past 38 years. I extend an open invitation to everybody who has been involved with the band in the past as well as our supporters and music enthusiasts to come and join us for what will be an evening of great entertainment.” The band, which performed superbly for President Michael D. Higgins on his visit to Killarney in 2012, embarked on a concert tour to Lisbon in 2013 and per-

formed two concerts in the Portuguese capital. The band was again a very proud ambassador for Killarney and Kerry on foreign soil in August 2017 when the they travelled to Monaco and Cannes and performed two concerts in the south of France under the baton of band conductor Vincent Condon. This was the band’s seventh foreign tour after visits to Germany, Holland, Sweden, Austria, Portugal and Paris over the past four decades. Band manager Ciaran Lynch says: “These are very exciting times for the band which would not be possible

without the encouragement and support we receive from the political and business sector and general public in Killarney. This concert will be a highlight and a celebration of the voluntary work, community service and musical excellence that exists here in Killarney. Rehearsals are going very well and there will be a massed band of over 100 players on stage for what will be a musical spectacle in Killarney not to be missed.” Tickets are priced at €12 for adults and €9 for children/OAPs and are available from the INEC ticket office, band members, the South Kerry MS Association, Kerry Cancer Support Group, Enable Ireland Kerry Children Services and on the door of the night of the concert. The concert will cater for all musical tastes and will include military marches, classical music, jazz numbers, film music, and vocal hits. Any person interested in joining the Gleneagle Concert Band (including past members and adults with previous musical experience) or enrolling in music lessons in the Gleneagle School of Music should contact the band at 087 2229513.

PJ’s Going Skydiving! The Shire Launch

Tasty New Menu

This week in The Chatroom PJ O’Sullivan, from the delicious Auntie Nellie’s sweet shop on Kenmare Place, calls in to have a chat about the weight loss journey he’s been on. In January we did a special New Year’s article and asked locals about their resolutions and sure enough PJ said he wanted to “get fit in mind and body and get more involved in charity work”. Well, after an eye opening trip to India, PJ is combining the two goals and attempting to lose five stone which would enable him to do a charity par-

achute jump! PJ tells us all about his journey so far, which has already seen him lose three stone since October, and how much more weight he has to lose in order to do the charity skydive. You can follow PJ’s progress over the next 12 weeks over on his Facebook page. Just search ‘PJ Goes Skydiving’ and you’ll find him. You’ll also be able to donate to this worthy cause from a link on the Facebook page. Catch all the craic in The Chatroom tonight Friday, March 16 at 9pm on our website www.killarneyadvertiser. ie and also on our Facebook page.

The Shire have launched an exciting new food menu aimed at providing even more delicious options to hungry customers. The popular Lord of the Rings themed bar, which is owned by well-liked entrepreneur Ollie Favier, started serving food for the first time in 2017 and their mouth-watering gourmet burgers went down a treat with locals and tourists alike. Now they’re hoping that this new menu will help satisfy a broader selection of tastes, with a whole host of appealing snacks to choose from. As well a firm favourites like the

Smeagol’s Cheese, Two Towers and Fires of Mordor burgers, customers can now sample Saruman’s Steak Sandwich, chilli con carne, fajitas, quesadillas and nachos in addition to a kids menu and plenty of scrumptious sides. The kitchen in the lively tavern has been expanded which, in turn, has allowed them to delve into other kinds of cuisine. The emphasis, however, will remain on quality. All ingredients are locally sourced and of the highest possible calibre. Check out their Facebook page or visit theshirekillarney. com for more information.

Views On The News

Crying Wolf In The Snow There was high praise for the council efforts and those of the Civil Defence for what is known as “Storm Emma”. Thankfully Kerry did not get the storm, and the snow didn’t show for a whole day after everyone went into lockdown. This week the council defended their strong – I would tend towards alarming – advice to stay indoors from 4pm. I was around town that Thursday. It was a fine day. Killarney was deserted. Everyone was shutting shop. The only large supermarket open after 2pm was SuperValu – it was like Christmas Eve trying to get in there. On the main roads, people rushed to get home by the 4pm deadline. There was panic on the roads and I witnessed a few near misses. And then everyone waited, and waited. Children were kept home from school all day. People who are used to telling the weather by the skies in the traditional sense, looked up at those skies and saw no immediate sign of snow, and less of storm. But the nanny state - and I am not a fan of the term - had taken over, and we all rushed home in defiance of centuries of common sense and weather lore handed down the generations. “It would be safer at home!” We had been warned, so precisely we were even given a time. The Kerry Emergency Local Co-Ordination team, which we are told includes all of the principal response agencies in the county, had met on 16 occasions over the period of the red alert from Thursday afternoon to Saturday. And 135 operational staff supported by 40 volunteers from the Civil Defence and the fire service worked tirelessly from 7am on Friday morning through to Sunday ensuring patients were taken for dialysis and other essential services ran. And the volunteers especially deserve our gratitude. They will not be on overtime or get time in lieu or holiday entitlements or any of the things state employees get. But why is there not a more localised, more precise forecast available for a county as large as Kerry? We have one of the oldest scientifically based weather stations in the world down in Valentia Observatory in Cahersiveen. Surely it can be configured to act locally? The regular news updates from the council were invaluable. So the communications and collating of information is working in Kerry. I have this gripe: it emerged during a council meeting in Tralee that the county has only four snow ploughs and eight gritters. Had we had more snow ploughs and less meetings - I would put money with you a plough will cost less than the meetings - we would have been able to return to normal quicker when the snow finally did come. It took two brave councillors to raise the uncomfortable issue of over-warning. The Milltown councillor Michael O’Shea, who is emerging since being Mayor of Kerry as having grown in confidence and one to watch was the first. He was in Killarney on Thursday and the whole town had shut down. “The problem is that Thursday was one of our

best days in the spring,” he said. His concern was that the next time there will be a real emergency, people won’t listen. His colleague, Johnny Healy-Rae, met one businessman who told him the Thursday lockdown cost him €5,000. Is it any accident that both of those who raised the issue are self-employed businessmen with their feet firmly on the ground? If there are going to be local warnings, let there be locally based forecasts, is what I say. And no more of this crying wolf.

Legal Questions

Now, I want to raise an uncomfortable issue, without making life any more difficult for a respected businessman in this town. A few weeks ago there was a trial in Tralee of a man who robbed a mobile phone after being captured urinating in a lane alongside the businessman’s office. If I were going into my home or business and found someone urinating there, I too would take out my phone and collect evidence in this manner. However, during the trial calumny was thrown and suggestions made during garda interviews with the accused that the businessman was taking inappropriate pictures. There was publicity to this effect because it was opened to the jury. The accused was found guilty of robbing the businessman’s phone. Afterwards, during the sentence hearing, the defence strategy of attempting to throw dirt took the Judge back to such an extent thathe questioned the appropriateness of it. The defence barrister put his hands up and told the judge the accused had time to think this over and regretted his derogatory remarks as “unjustified and improper”. Fine so. But something else emerged, which the jury were not allowed hear until after their verdict. The man urinating has 71 previous convictions for theft, robbery, assault, criminal damage and so on. And he has one for robbing his own mother. There is a legal tradition of not disclosing an accused person’s past record to a jury. And there is some justification for this. But put that on the weighing scales against the “right” of the accused, in attempting to save himself, to throw any kind of calumny that comes into his head as a defence strategy and have that opened to a jury and to the public via the media. Where is the balance here? In his victim impact statement, the Killarney businessman told how he found the whole experience of having to appear in court and relive the ordeal he had been put through traumatic. Listening to the garda interview and hearing the accounts on the media was difficult for himself and his family. “The allegation that I was attempting to take inappropriate photographs of any kind is an outrageous lie and has been very difficult for my family to hear or read,” he said.

Charity

Table Quiz To Remember Charity Champion A popular Killarney man who worked tirelessly in support of a local charity will be remembered at a table quiz, in his name, to raise funds to help continue his work. The late Tim Moore, a wellknown Killarney accountant who passed away, suddenly, in 2002, was very actively involved in the Irish Pilgrimage Trust which brings children and young adults to Lourdes every year. To honour his commitment, the annual Tim Moore Memorial Table Quiz has been held in the town de the past 25 years and this year’s event will take place in the Gleneagle Hotel on Thursday, March 22 (7.30pm). Kieran Coffey, the retired principal of Fossa National School, is one of those who spearhead the Kerry pilgrimage to Lourdes every Easter and he has appealed to the public to support the very important fundraiser which helps offset some of the costs involved. Several children and young adults from Kerry, with physical and social needs, will travel on this year’s pilgrimage, starting on Easter Sunday. “We are delighted to be in a position to continue Tim’s great work and to dedicate the quiz to him. It is now in its 26th year and it is always so well supported by the people of the greater Killarney area,” said Kieran. Ring of Kerry cycle PRO Cathal Walshe will be the quizmaster on the night and there will be some super spot prizes and raffle prizes given away.

Marty Fan Miriam Wins Big On Winning Streak

Pic: Mac Innes Photography

Lucky local woman Miriam O’Sullivan walked away with a cool €18,000 when she appeared on last week’s episode of Winning Streak. Miriam, who was representing her mother Mary O’Sullivan-Mangan, came home from London to make the appearance and admitted that it was big moment for her as she’s a huge fan of host Marty Whelan. Mary’s husband Gerry buys three tickets in Christy Healy’s on New Street every week: one for himself, one for Mary and one for Miriam. Mary was the lucky winner this time around and, with a little help from Miriam, she’s now richer to the tune of €18,000. Congratulations to all involved!

Celtic Steps will entertain the masses at 4.30pm. “We have a wonderful array of talented local performers giving their time on the day,” commented David Rae, musical director for the festival. “We expect great crowds and this is all free entertainment.” St Patrick’s Day Parade This year’s parade has garnered huge interest as is evident by the wealth of talent and diversity in the entries. Commencing at 2pm, this year’s parade will weave its way up Mission Road onto East Avenue, Kenmare Place, Main Street, New Street, Beech Road and into the New Street lower car park exiting onto Mission Road. The Creative Director for this year’s parade is Fiona Crowley of Fiona Crowley Stage School. “We have hundreds of participants in this year’s parade,” Fiona sais, “and we can rest assured that the parade will be a success in its primary goal, which is to ensure that it is, as always, about the community, the men, women, boys and girls who walk with pride alongside each other to make our parade happen. Without them there is no parade, so we salute you, our participants, our clubs, our schools, our organisations, who always make this parade a memorable one.”

Come & Join The Celebrations Words: Fiona Crowley So as the song goes, “If you’re Irish come into the parlour, there’s a welcome there for you!” Well, that’s our invitation to you this Saturday. Whether you are 1 or 101, come and join us to celebrate our wonderful patron saint and all that’s fabulous about being Irish. Our parade starts from Mission Road at 2pm sharp and promises to be full of life, colour and a little bit of the magic that makes the Irish so special. Wave that flag, wear that big green hat, paint your face green, white and gold - whatever takes your fancy! But most if all, come and join in the fun. In the words of another famous song, “Nobody is going to rain on my parade!”

The committee strongly advise everyone to arrive in town early and note the traffic detours that will be in place. Free parking has been secured at the following locations from 1.00pm to 4.30pm: St Brendan’s College Secondary School, Penney’s car park, Hillard House and Killarney Community College, New Road. The Festival committee want to thank all the schools and car park providers for their generosity in assisting the running of the parade. There will also be a wheelchair viewing area at Market Cross and the parade route and after party will have lots of amazing characters wandering about, plenty of characters not seen before in Killarney, and these guys are happy to pose for photos. Paul Sherry, Chairperson, said: “We are expecting a large crowd in Killarney for the day’s events and we encourage everyone to wear your colours and paint the town green. Of course, please listen to the stewards and be safety conscious but overall enjoy the day’s festivities.” The briefing for the stewards will take place at 12.30pm at the back of the Laurels. Child Collection Point Children participating in the parade can be collected from the bottom left-hand corner of the New Street car park (bottle bank area) at the end of the parade route. The entertainment continues in Killarney over the weekend, on Sunday, March 18 the Mayor’s Charity Shindig takes place at the INEC and on Monday, March 19 there’s a free concert by Killarney School of Music in St Mary’s Church at 8pm. And, of course, the now annual ‘Greening of Killarney’ will take place over the festival week with many of our iconic buildings bathed in green light. Check out the festival’s Facebook page for the Best Greened Building vote. In addition, this year there is a Best Dressed Shop Window and the competition has been heating up all week. Festival chair Paul Sherry thanked all the parties who make the festival happen. “We would like to thank all the volunteers who make the parade happen, from the Fitzgerald Stadium committee, to the Gardaí, the stewards and first aiders, our sponsors who are generous with their funds and their participation, and Kerry County Council.”

7th Kerry County Clean-Up Day Is Launched

The annual County Clean-Up Day has been launched and everyone in the county is being asked to get involved and play their part. Now in its seventh year and with the support of Kerry County Council and KWD Recycling, the County Clean-up will take place on Saturday, April 14. Last year, 5,000 volunteers gathered 6,500 bags of litter on a single day in their own localities which left the county of Kerry looking spick and span. Organisers are asking local residents associations, schools, youth groups, sporting groups, businesses, families or simply a few friends to get together and gather litter along the major routes and along the local country roads throughout Kerry on the day. Colm ‘The Gooch’ Cooper will be on the County Clean-up team for 2018, working hard as always to promote the county and lend a helping hand. KWD Recycling are busy preparing County Clean-up

packs which will be distributed around the county and groups are asked to register with KWD to receive their pack and to arrange a collection points for bags of litter collected. Full details are available online (www.countycleanup.com) or via email (countycleanup@kwd.ie). Cathaoirleach of Kerry County Council, Cllr John Sheahan, encouraged everyone in the county to take part. “Kerry is a county so reliant on its reputation as a clean environment and its reputation as a tourist destination, so every citizen has a role to play in keeping the county tidy,” he said. “The message we want to get out this year is to clean up the roads that are less frequently collected and stretches of roadside that might not have been cleaned in recent years. I hope as many people as possible will participate – all you have to do is think about the roads we pass every day on our way from home to the shops, schools and work. And get involved.”

Givenchy Dead: French Fashion Designer Dies At 91 The designer’s death was confirmed by his partner Philippe Venet to AFP News, BBC reports. Venet verified that Givenchy died in his sleep on Saturday. On Monday, De Givenchy’s Instagram page shared the news with its followers. “The House of Givenchy is sad to report the passing of its founder Hubert de Givenchy, a major personality of the world of French Haute Couture and a gentleman who symbolized Parisian chic and elegance for more than half a century. His enduring influence and his approach to style reverberates to this day. He will be greatly missed.” The designer founded one of the world’s leading fashion houses in Paris in the 1950s, before making his way to North American markets. The designer had styled the likes of former first lady Jacqueline Kennedy and legendary actor Audrey Hepburn.

The definition of a true gentleman, that will stay with me forever.” De Givenchy was born on Feb. 21, 1927 to an an aristocratic family in the provincial city of Beauvais, AP reports, and founded his label in 1952. In 1988 he sold it to luxury conglomerate LVMH and retired years later.

New Strands Celebrating 20 Years In Business

Talented hairdresser Geraldine Harrington-Doran is this week celebrating 20 years in business at her ever-popular Killarney salon, New Strands on New Street. Geraldine has been cutting hair in town for the last 29 years and says New Strands is more like a second family than a business. “We have a very loyal clientele,” she says. “I have a very close relationship with my clients. One lady who passed away recently, I had been doing her hair for 28 years.” “The ladies I have on Saturday, it’s like a Saturday club and we share sad times and happy times together. We have a very good relationship.” So where does the Healy-Rae connection come from? “I’m from Kilgarvan myself and Jackie would have been a neighbour of

mine,” she explains. “He was a very good friend of my father’s so he helped open the salon for me 20 years ago. Then the boys came back to relive it.” “But I’m not responsible for their hairstyles!” Geraldine, who is married to Frank Doran of Safeguard Security, also has a local girl, Joan Marie Sexton, working with her. Together they offer a wide range of unisex hairdressing services including cutting, colouring, perming, upstyling and more. • New Strands is open Monday-Saturday from 9am-6pm. An incredibly talented young pianist from Dingle struck a chord with classical music fans in Killarney at the weekend as Ava Duffy was crowned Killarney Rotary Young Musician of the Year for 2018. The 18th annual competition unfolded over two days in the Kerry Diocesan Youth Service centre at Fairhill on Friday 9th and Saturday 10th and an extraordinarily entertaining concert in the INEC Acoustic Club proved a fitting finale. The MC on the night was Grace Foley O’Sullivan, former winner of the competition in 2004, and the adjudicators were Dr Alberth Bradshaw and Linda Byrne. “Patrons and guests were treated to an amazing display of talent, with voice, violin and piano fighting it out in a classical music version of Battle of The Bands,” said Killarney Rotary member Angela O’Connor. Of course, there had to be a winner and Ava Duffy’s virtuoso performance held the judges and audience spellbound. Talented violinist Clodagh Gaynor won second prize, with vocalist Catriona Fitzmaurice

being presented with the award for third place. The runners-up were Katarina Roberts and Laura Hynes. The James Gleeson Memorial Trophy for most promising pianist went to Mara Treacy while most promising for string went to Jan O’Sullivan. Most promising for woodwind went to Odhran O’Reilly and most promising voice was awarded to Tess Dowling. The awards were presented on the night by Grace O’Neill Gleeson. There were performances on the night by Grace Foley, Harry O’Connor and Kieran Foley, all previous winners of the Young Musician of the Year. Killarney Rotary member Angela welcomed Killarney Advertiser as media partner and sponsor again this year. “If we in Killarney Rotary Club through our Young Musician competition foster in our young competitors a love of music then as far as we are concerned the competition will have been a success. I would like to thank our members Barry Murphy and Seán Treacy for their foresight in setting up this competition 18 years ago.”

A Weekly Round-Up Of News + Views From Kerry And Around

Ireland The 14th Happiest Country In The World Ireland is the 14th happiest country in the world according to this year’s World Happiness Report, which measures “subjective well-being” i.e. how happy people feel they are, and why. Finland came in at number one, toppling neighbours

Norway who came first in 2017. Burundi was the least happy, taking over from the Central African Republic. Nordic countries regularly appear in the top five, while war-hit countries and a number in sub-Saharan Africa regularly appear in the bottom five.

Irish Economy Grows By 7.8% The economy grew by 7.8% of GDP last year, according to preliminary estimates from the Central Statistics Office, making it the European Union’s fastest-growing economy for the fourth year in a row. Measured by GNP, the economy grew by 6.6% in 2017,

the CSO said. The CSO said that Modified Domestic Demand - a new measure used in Ireland to remove the distorting effects of foreign multinational companies - showed growth of 3.9%. This suggests that the wider economy is feeling little initial impact from Brexit.

Risk Of Snow On St Patrick’s Day A cold St Patrick’s Day weekend is being predicted with a risk of snow showers and a “significant wind chill”. Met Éireann has forecast that there will be “a few wintry showers” in parts on March 17. In a forecast it said: “Cold and breezy on St Patrick’s Day, with a significant wind chill due to fresh and gusty easterly winds. Afternoon temperatures will be just 1 to 3

Trump Corner

Make China Great Again Talk show host Jimmy Kimmel shared an alarming discovery with viewers this week: none of the merchandise available from Donald Trump’s official store is made in the USA. Trump has been vocal about supporting American-made products and keeping as much industry and trade within the United States as possible. Kimmel is one of Trump’s most high profile critics and decided to conduct an experiment by purchasing a number of products from trumpstore.com, the president’s online shop which is run by Eric Trump and Donald Trump Jr. “I’m sure Eric and Donald Jr take this American thing very seriously,” Kimmel said. “These guys are red, white and blue to the core. They’re like a couple of flags wearing hair gel, these two. “I ordered a white Trump golf hat, which I don’t know if you can see but it’s made in China,” Kimmel said as a camera zoomed

Never fails to entertain

in on the manufacturer’s label. “I got a coffee mug that says Trump on it, which is made in Thailand. I got a golf club cover, which is made in China, but decorated in the USA. And that’s something. I got a Trump signature duffle bag which is made in China. I got a Trump signature shoe bag which is made in China.” “Trump’s whole platform is about supporting American companies. His company isn’t even supporting America.” Kimmel also said that he came across two products that didn’t have nation of origin labels at all. According to American import law, “failure to properly report product origin can result in substantial penalties. Companies can face up to $500,000 in fines per violation or double the loss or gain from the violation related to these violations.” “This could be very expensive, not to mention this has got to be embarrassing,” Kimmel continued. “I’m sure Eric and Don Jr didn’t know about this. I’m sure this was a simple oversight. I’ll just file an official complaint, and let them sort it all out.”

degrees in eastern half of the country and between 4 to 6 degrees further west. Most places dry, but a few wintry showers are likely in the east and south. Very cold Saturday night, with mainly clear skies and some snow showers in the east and southeast. Amounts are looking small at this stage. Lowest temperatures -1 to -4 degrees.”

Varadkar & Pence Meet Behind Closed Doors

It has been revealed that the meeting between Taoiseach Leo Varadkar and American vice president Mike Pence will be held behind closed doors. Traditionally the St Patrick’s Day breakfast meeting between the Taoiseach and the vice president is open to the media and their comments can be reported to the public. However, media at the Friday morning meeting will be prohibited from reporting the remarks of both leaders. It is understood the decision was taken by the vice president’s office and Irish government sources have said they are “not happy” that the media are being prevented from reporting on the event. Varadkar is one of few openly gay world leaders and Mr Pence

has been criticised for his views on LGBT rights. Pence has long been criticised for his opposition to gay rights and is a rumoured supporter of conversion therapy – a discredited practice that proponents claim can make gay people straight. The Taoiseach was asked on Wednesday if he will raise the issue when they meet. “I’m told Vice President Pence is not a supporter of conversion therapy even though some people have alleged he is,” he said. “But I imagine if I have the opportunity - I’m going to meet him over breakfast - so if I have the opportunity I’ll certainly be mentioning the wider issue of equal rights and freedoms for LGBT.”

Life In Dublin Now More Jones Says Sorry For Expensive Than London “Scummy Irish” Remark

Life in Dublin is now more expensive than it is in London, according to a new global study carried out by The Economist. The capital was ranked 19th out of 133 cities in the magazine’s latest cost of living report, up six places on 2017. London, traditionally considered to be an extremely expensive place to live, was came in 30th, dropping six places to its lowest ranking in two decades. According to the Economist’s analysis – which compares the prices of hundreds of items like rent, food, clothing and transport – the UK capital is now 9% cheaper than Dublin. The sharp drop in the value of the pound and the uncertainty surrounding Brexit are thought

to be the main factors in London’s shift. Singapore was declared the world’s most expensive city for the fifth year in a row. Paris and Zurich were joint second while Hong Kong and Oslo completed the top five. The French capital is the only eurozone country to feature in the top 10.

Woman Jailed For Killing Boyfriend In YouTube Stunt

A woman has been sentenced to six months in jail for shooting dead her boyfriend in a YouTube prank that went wrong. 20-year-old Monalisa Perez from Minnesota pleaded guilty to second-degree manslaughter in the death of Pedro Ruiz, 22, who she had been dating for five years. On Wednesday, the presiding judge set out the terms agreed under plea bargaining. He said Perez would serve a 180-day jail term, alternating between 10 days in jail and 10 days out for the first six months, amounting to 90 days behind bars. The judge said the remaining 90 days could be served in home confinement. Last June, Perez was asked by Ruiz to fire a gun from a 30cm

away as he held a hardback encyclopaedia to protect himself from the bullet. Perez had previously experimented and thought that the thick book would protect him. The clip was filmed by two cameras and the couple’s threeyear-old daughter witnessed the shooting. They had recorded a number of YouTube videos together, featuring them doing stunts and completing challenges. Before the shooting, Perez tweeted: “Me and Pedro are probably going to shoot one of the most dangerous videos ever. His idea, not mine.” The bullet pierced the book, which was only 1.5 inches thick, killing Ruiz. Perez was pregnant with their second child at the time of the shooting.

England head coach Eddie Jones has apologised unreservedly after footage emerged him referring to Ireland as the “scummy Irish” and Wales as a “little s*** place”. The video shows Jones giving a talk on leadership for Fuso, the Japanese parent company of England sponsors Mitsubishi. It was uploaded by Fuso to YouTube in July last year but has only come to light before Saturday’s final round of the 2018 NatWest 6 Nations when England will face Ireland at Twickenham. Jones apologised for his comments on Wednesday evening and admitted his choice of words was inexcusable, saying he was “very sorry”. The Rugby Football Union said it would apologise to the Irish and Welsh unions. In the talk, Jones told an audience: “We’ve played 23 Tests and have only lost one Test to the scummy Irish. I’m still dirty about

that game. But we will get that back! We will get that back, don’t worry, we have them next year at home, we will get ‘em back!” Earlier in the talk, Jones discusses Japan Under-20s losing to their Welsh counterparts 125-0 shortly after he took over as Brave Blossoms head coach in 2012. “Wales. Who knows Wales? Are there any Welsh people here? So it’s this little s*** place that has got three million people. Three million!” he said. In his apology, released by the Rugby Football Union, Jones said: “I apologise unreservedly for any offence caused - no excuses and I shouldn’t have said what I did. I’m very sorry.” Not only will the footage have caused acute embarrassment to the RFU, but it could also serve to motivate Ireland ahead of Saturday’s St Patrick’s Day showdown.

Hawking: Brilliant Physicist & Very Funny Man The world lost one of its finest ever minds this week when the brilliant physicist Stephen Hawking died aged 76. As well as being an influential scientist, Hawking frequently showed his humorous side and appeared on countless comedies and talks shows throughout his colourful public life. Perhaps Hawking’s finest comedic hour came on John Oliver’s Last Week Tonight show. Oliver was questioning him about his belief that there could be infinite parallel universes and asked: “Does that mean that there is a universe out there where I am smarter than you?” “Yes,” Hawking replied, “and also a universe where you’re funny.”

Woman Made False Claim A woman has been handed a two-and-ahalf year suspended sentence for making a false accusation of rape after a night out in Killarney in 2014. Jacinta O’Connor (28) from Killorglin had been on a night out in Killarney after Kerry won the All-Ireland when she got separated from friends. She later arrived at Killarney Garda Station at 4am and claimed she had been raped by a foreign national who was wearing a green hoodie. After a thorough examination of CCTV foot-

age, gardaí discovered that the woman had actually left a nightclub with an Irish man, referred to in court as ‘Mr X’, who she went down a laneway with. This man told the court that the pair engaged in consensual sex. Passing judgment, Judge Thomas E. O’Donnell said the woman had consumed a copious amount of alcohol on the night in question and that she had no previous convictions. He added, however, that this was a serious charge and she had wasted garda time.

Netflix - Hans Zimmer: Live in Prague

Review: Calum Scott: Only Human Calum Scott arrived on the music circuit via talent competitions and a Maroon 5 tribute band, but it wasn’t until he performed Robyn’s “Dancing On My Own” on Britain’s Got Talent that he captured the world’s attention. It’s included here on Only Human, his life-affirming debut album

that’s teeming with similar songs designed to give you goosebumps (“Won’t Let You Down”) and the confidence to call your crush (“Stop Myself (Only Human)”). For a moment of introspection between all the anthems, listen to “Not Dark Yet,” an acoustic serenade that lets his mega-pipes shine.

On The Box

Hans Zimmer’s critically acclaimed European Tour arrived at the sold out O2 Arena in the Czech capital, bringing with him a support cast of 72 musicians, which included a full choir, symphony orchestra and his own 21-piece hand-picked backing band that featured Johnny Marr (The Smiths) and many of Academy Award-winner Hans’ closest friends and collaborators. That night, the sell-out, 17,000 strong

crowd witnessed an incredible live show of music from Hans’ unparalleled career, from Gadiator to Pirates of the Caribbean to The Lion King to The Dark Knight, Hans’ career has seen him lend his hand to some of cinemas greatest successes, working alongside acclaimed directors including Ridley Scott, Michael Bay and Christopher Nolan. This concert film gives fans of the films and his work the perfect seat to see the musical maestro at work.

Fans Flock To INEC For Niall Horan Gig

Words: Sarah Walsh Fans of Niall Horan came to Killarney in droves last weekend as the popular Irish musician brought his Flicker tour to town. The Mullingar native and his band performed to a sold out crowd of 3,000, which consisted of mostly teenage girls, at Killarney’s INEC. The former One Direction member, wearing jeans, a white t-shirt and a guitar slung over his left shoulder, came onto the stage to screams as he sang She’s On The Loose. After the first song, Niall chatted to the crowd and even attempted to put on a Kerry accent when he said: “This tour finishes up in America at the end of September. But you can say you were there when it started in the most beautiful town in Ireland: Killarney in the Kingdom of Kerry.” Niall then moved on with the set which consisted of You and Me, This Town, The Tide and other songs from his album, Flicker. He also performed covers of his One Direction songs Fools Gold and Drag Me Down, Crying In The Club by Camilla Cabello and one of his “favourite” songs, Dancing In The Dark by Bruce Springsteen. He also gave a rendition of Thin Lizzy’s Dancing In The Moonlight. Later, the talented musician moved across the stage, put down his guitar and sat at the the piano to play his unreleased song Why Did It Take So Long. He admitted that he immediately regretted not putting the song on the album after it was released and modestly explained that he’s not as talented on the keys as he’d like to be. However, it was definitely my favourite performance of the entire show. At one point Horan asked everyone to put their phones in their pockets, to just listen and be present and in the moment instead of watching him through a screen. For the final encore he performed his hit Slow Hands and then

said his goodbyes. As this is Horan’s first tour without his One Direction bandmates I was sceptical of how he would perform on his own. However, once he took to the stage I felt my inner 16-year-old self falling in love with him all over again, with his charming smile that didn’t once leave his face and his amazing talent as a singer, songwriter and musician. I can’t wait to hear more music from him in the future and hope to see him live again soon. Pics: Don MacMonagle Left: Excited fans pictured at the Niall Horan ‘Flicker’ world tour. Last week we dealt in general terms with the amendments which are coming in to force in respect of Data Protection and in particular the General Data Protection Regulations which shall come into force on the 25th of May 2018. With the new regulations, there are defined time periods in which an organisation is required to deal with requests for Data held by them and there should be no undue delay in processing such request for such Data. The organisation will have one month to deal with such requests. Organisations therefore should review their policies and procedures for locating such information, from wherever it is stored, and designate a decision maker within the organisation for such requests received. Organisations should ensure that their systems and procedures and software can deal with such requests within the time period permitted where such requests require the Data

to be dealt with electronically. In most situations, an organisation will not be in a position to charge for such requests unless the organisation can show the prohibitive costs incurred by them in dealing with the said request. Organisations shall still retain the right to refuse such Data requests in circumstances where the request will be deemed objectively excessive or unfounded. However, entities will be required to have in place clear and defined policies and procedures where such a refusal is made and it will be important to give reasons as to why the request is refused. The above is a discussion piece only and does not purport to be legal advice and should not be relied upon as such. In respect of any specific circumstances, you should consult your solicitor to obtain specific legal advice and Terence F. Alexander McQueen

Balmain Paco Rabanne

Akris

Off White

To lift and sculpt the complexions at Chanel, lead make-up artist Tom Pecheux used Chanel’s Le Teint Ultra-Fluid Foundation, teamed with Les Beiges Healthy Glow Natural Eyeshadow Palette, and Healthy Glow Luminous Multi-Colour Powder, for a healthy bronze highlight across the eyes, temples and cheekbones of the models. For the Alexander McQueen show, the dramatic nature of the red lipstick was enhanced not only by a satin finish but because the rest of the make-up was completely pared back. Touches of gold leaf were scattered across the brow bone of the models at Akris, adding a textured edge to their boyish brows, kohl-rimmed eyes and naturally-flushed skin. With their soft pink lips and matching swash of blusher on their cheeks, the Balmain models looked like they’d just been kissed before heading onto the runway. A healthy but natural glow was

the focus at Isabel Marant, where a touch of bronzer defined the cheekbones and a smoky brown eyeshadow, alongside bold brows, lifted the eyes. As a finishing touch, the natural lipstick colour worn by each of the models was chosen to subtly give their skintone a boost. The secret behind the full lips seen on every model during the Paco Rabanne show was the use of a lip liner (in the same tone as each girl’s skin colour) to enhance and overline their cupid’s bow. The models’ skin at OffWhite was so radiant, it had a wet-look shine to it, especially around the cheekbones and eyes, as highlighter was liberally applied there. The choice of an equally wet-look liquid lipstick and slicked-back hair amplified the effect. Lead make-up artist Peter Philips was inspired by the sunglasses seen on the catwalk at the Dior show, as he chose to line the models’ eyes with a matching colour to the shades they were each wearing.

Simple, Tasty & So, So Healthy!

Is the weather getting you down? Are you worried you might never get around to sowing your vegetables, never mind harvest them? If so, then let me ask you: have you tried growing microgreens? SO simple, SO tasty and SO, SO healthy! There are two ways to grow microgreens: either hydroponically, without soil, or in trays of compost. Firstly, those grown without soil are technically called sprouts. Very little space is needed, only a piece of the windowsill. You can buy specially designed sprouting trays. I have three which stack on top of each other taking up less space than a dinner plate. These trays have a valve and grooves so that just the right amount of water is left behind for optimum growth. There are also jars which you can get which have a special vented lid and stand at a forty-five degree angle, again so that air can circulate. Alternatively, if you are starting off and you’re not sure it’s for you, you can just use a wide glass jar and replace the lid with a pice of cheesecloth held in place with an elastic band. So, you have your jar. Next, buy seeds. The best are organic seeds specially for sprouting, as many regular seeds are treated with fungicides and you will be eating the whole thing. Sprouting seeds are readily available in any health food shop. Place an amount into the jar, bearing in mind that they will grow and soak for about 6 hours. It will usually tell you on the back of the packet. Then rinse with clean water, at least twice a day. Three days later your crop will be ready! Microgreens such as wheatgrass and pea shoots need compost to grow. Pea shoots are a currently a favourite in our house. They are delicious in salads, adding a crunchy sweetness. Fill a tray with about an inch of compost and spread your seeds on top of i. They can be close together as the plant is not going to grow to a large size. Cover with a thin layer of compost. Keep well watered and within a few days they will germinate. Within two weeks you will be able to cut the shoots. Why, apart from space, would you grow microgreens? There are many health benefits, it seems that they have up to forty times the levels of nutrients than fully grown plants. They are high in antioxidants and enzymes which help food break down in the digestive process. Many seeds can be used. Alfalfa is a great one to start with. Radish, kale, cress, mustard and sunflowers are all excellent, as are lentils, mung beans and fenugreek. The list is endless but for a comprehensive guide to all things micro, visit themicrogardener. com. It is a great guide for beginners! Try microgreens, you will be rewarded quickly – which kids love – your meals will have the panache of a fancy restaurant, and there are health benefits to boot!

Get In Gear With All The Latest Motoring News Valtteri Bottas believes it is possible he can beat Mercedes teammate Lewis Hamilton but says he will not be going “into a complete mental fight within the team” as part of his strategy. Max Verstappen says his Red Bull outfit need to be within threetenths of pole position at this month’s season-opening Australian Grand Prix to be in the fight for victory in the race. McLaren chief Eric Boullier says the last three years were difficult for the team but they have to be “ambitious” for the 2018 season and to do so they will have to “take risks”. McLaren’s new partnership with Renault got off to an inauspicious start as the team finished with the lowest mileage of pre-season testing, but Boullier says they were right to be “aggressive” with their car design. Ferrari driver Kimi Raikkonen believes his team have delivered a “strong package” for the 2018 Formula 1 season and that they could have gone faster during pre-season testing. Daniel Ricciardo recorded 92 laps in the Aston Martin Red Bull Racing car at the Circuit de Barcelona-Catalunya, finishing fourth fastest overall, and believes the team “are close enough to be in the hunt”.

Geneva Motor Show Range Rover SV Coupe

Range Rover has announced it will return to its roots with a stylish twodoor limited-edition model dubbed the SV Coupe. 999 examples of the Range Rover SV Coupe will be hand-assembled by Jaguar Land Rover’s Special Vehicle Operations (SVO) Warwickshire, UK. With a sloped roof, side vents and stylised brake lights, the new Range Rover SV Coupe looks the part and the interior is best described as opulent.

Skoda Vision X Concept unveiled

Czech it out! The smallest ever Skoda SUV won’t be called Yeti but it will be hip, cool and affordable and with a name like the Skoda Vision X Concept, you’d be forgiven for thinking that this prototype vehicle is Wolverine’s latest weaponised superhero car. Rather, it’s a preview of Skoda’s first baby crossover.

Volkswagen previews EV flagship

Volkswagen’s plans for its dedicated electric-car fleet have gone from zero to a confirmed model range so big that it needs a flagship. It’s a clear signpost of where Volkswagen wants its design efforts to head in its new era of electrification, with more than 20 full battery-electric cars planned to be in production by 2025. Volkswagen’s autonomous ID Vizzion concept car is so huge that it dwarfs even the old Phaeton and is longer than any production Volkswagen on sale anywhere in the world today.

Toyota Supra is go!

The Toyota Supra is back, or it will be soon. Toyota went one step short of unveiling the latest iteration of its legendary supercar by showing off the Toyota GR Supra Racing Concept at the Geneva motor show today. Toyota has committed to reviving the storied Supra nameplate in the near future, and the GR is a clear pointer. Insiders are calling the concept a ‘GT’ version of the real deal.

Ogier Wins As Crash Costs Meeke Second Sebastien Ogier claimed his second win of the season in Rally Mexico last weekend as his main rivals Kris Meeke and Paul Nagle suffered a crash and lost second place in the closing stages. Ogier started Sunday with a 35-second lead over Meeke but his advantage got even safer after an incident for the Northern Irishman on the opening

stage of the day. Meeke tipped his Citroen on its side four kilometres from the end of SS20 and, while he managed to continue with the help of spectators, he lost 47 seconds and fell behind Hyundai’s Dani Sordo. Ogier comfortably beat Sordo in the subsequent SS21 to have a 55s lead coming into the Power Stage, in which he took second and added a further four points to his championship tally. Despite a puncture in the Power Stage, Sordo took second, his best result since the 2015 Rally Catalun-

ya, with Meeke also securing his first podium of the season. This third place result lifts Meeke and Nagle to fourth in the championship table. The talking point over the weekend was Kris Meeke and Paul Nagle’s teammate, the nine-time WRC champion, Sebastian Loeb, returning to the Citroen last weekend. Watching his rise to the top of the leaderboard, it was like he was never away until a puncture on the Saturday evening loop dropped him down the order, putting an end to a fairytale return.

Advice For First-Time Home Buyers Get Connected

When buying a home, information and timeliness is everything. You don’t want to have to keep trawling through property websites. Set up searches and property alerts so you know instantly when a property becomes available and can act swiftly. You’ll also be able to keep track of all homes in your price range and areas of interest. Check out the Property Price Register to track how much houses in your target area are actually selling for.

Be Organised

With a scarcity of homes for sale in our cities, it’s a competitive market for buyers. You may have to view a lot of homes before you get that perfect starter home. Keep track of each property you view by taking your own photos. And make a list of properties you like with plenty of notes and updates on the bidding.

BER Essentials

Every home has to have a Building Energy Rating (BER) certificate. This is an important factor when deciding on how much to pay for a home.

Concentrate On What’s Important

Property veterans won’t be put off by anything that’s not too costly to put right. But they will be able to tot up to the nearest cent, the true cost of pricey deficiencies such as rotten windows, creaky extensions and the lack of a decent central heating system.

Fools Rush In

If you are interested, don’t rush in with a bid at or above the asking price. All you are doing is stoking up the price. But don’t be afraid to make a bid either.

Survey

Lenders may not require you get a survey done. But for a few hundred euro it’s well worth investing in. This is particularly true if it’s an old property or in an area that’s prone to pyrite damage. A report identified 10,300 homes in Ireland that are possibly contaminated by pyrite.

Clovers Lane

Clovers Lane is situated off College Street. Left: A stereoview of the lane from 1924 showing open drains. Right: This photo is of the last ‘Gas Lamp’ left in a laneway in Killarney, taken by Michael Mulcahy in the late 1940’s.

Clover Lane back in the day - The hill behind Clovers Lane was called ‘Mud Hill’ (before Mangerton View and Emmetts & York Tce were built) and it extended from the rear of The Shambles or The Milk Market to Pound Row and was where the town officially ended, if you stood on this hill and looked straight ahead you would only see fields and two buildings, the Fever Hospital (Parish Hall) and the Lunatic Asylum (St. Finians) and nothing else (bar the ruins of the graveyard below the now Lewis Road roundabout). As for the name of Clover’s Lane, a clove was hand held instrument used in linen manufacturing, thus the users were called clovers. Lord Kenmare developed a linen industry in Killarney (Deenagh Mill being the largest) but most of the houses in the lanes particularly in now Clover’s lane produced linen from flax, the smell was awful as it was left steep for weeks, after they would use seaweed and buttermilk to bleach it. Carding (mills) were also abundant.

11TH ANNIVERSARY O’LEARY

The happy hours we once enjoyed, How sweet their memory still But death has left a vacant place, This world can never fill.

Just a prayer from those who loved you, Just a memory fond and true, In our hearts you’ll live forever, Because we thought the world of you,

How dearly we loved you, And prayed you might live, But Jesus just beckoned, And we had to give.

We hold you close within our hearts, And there you shall remain, To walk with us throughout our lives, Until we meet again,

God gave us strength to bear it, And courage to fight the blow, What it has meant to lose you, God alone will ever know.

So rest in peace dear loved one, And thanks for all you’ve done, We pray that God has given you, The crown you’ve truly won.

Always remembered by Mom and Dee

Showtime Lakers Bringing Killarney Together

Fixture:

Sunday at 5.30pm League Cu p Quarter Final Scotts Lak ers v IT Ca rl ow (Killarney Sports & L eisure Cen tre) The winne rs will play in the semi-finals in Tallagh t on Monda at 3.30pm y .

Words: Adam Moynihan How did we survive for almost a decade without National League basketball? Last Saturday night’s league decider was just the latest in a long line of thrilling spectacles at the Auracle and, just seven months after reforming, the Lakers have firmly re-established themselves as Killarney’s favourite sports team. Another huge crowd turned out to see Cormac O’Donoghue’s side duke it out with Kilkenny and the atmosphere in the fourth quarter was really special. There’s just something about the back-and-forth nature of basketball that lends itself to great drama and excitement and those final few minutes were some of the most enjoyable I’ve experienced in a long time. The Lakers are the only team Killarney has at that level so there’s a real sense of community at these games. It’s very different to other sports in that regard. With football and soccer, there are multiple clubs so the fan bases are divided. As we all know, there are fierce rivalries in Killarney and rivalries tend to breed bitterness. At St Paul’s games, there’s no Legion or Crokes or Spa or Athletic or Celtic. There’s a lot of love in the building. It’s refreshing.

Personally, I love covering the basketball because, unlike football and soccer, no one in Killarney can accuse me of being biased (or not biased enough). It’s great. Also I love basketball, so that helps. It’s a major regret of mine that I never took it up when I was younger. I’m jealous of the local boys like Flip and Mark Greene to be honest. The Lakers are without question the best Killarney team to play for at the moment. Athletic are second, obviously. (Legion juniors third.) After starting reasonably well, the Kilkenny game looked to be slipping away from the Lakers. They trailed by 11 with six minutes to play and the energy was fairly sucked out of the building at that stage. The visitors started to tire, however, and with 3:30 on the clock, the gap was cut to just five. In arguably the most important play of the game, Mark Greene, who was excellent throughout, intercepted a pass and was fouled in the open floor. The Lakers, who are normally very good free throw shooters, had been struggling from the line all night so there was an air of trepidation in the building. Greene was unaffected. He steadied himself and drained the pair of them to make it a one-score game. Antuan Bootle hit two free throws and all of a sudden

it was 80-81. The next play down, Kilkenny stifled the Lakers attack but Dan Griffin gathered a rebound, turned and threw up a fadeaway jumper as the shot clock expired. It went in and the place erupted. (Check out my Twitter video @AdvertiserSport if you get a chance. Scenes.) Dailian Mason made a three shortly after and the game, and Shield, was won. They now have a home League Cup quarter final against the fourth place team from Division 1A, Carlow. That tie will take place Sunday at 5.30pm. Win or lose, this will definitely be the last home game of the season as the semis and final are on up the country. From speaking to the players, the leagues themselves (i.e. Division 1A and Division 1B) and the President’s Cup seem to be the priority but I’m sure they’ll be going all out to challenge for this trophy as well. I think you could already call their first season back a success but there’s till time for it to get even better. Lakers scorers: Antuan Bootle (32), Dailian Mason (17), Mark Greene (12), Andrew Fitzgerald (9), Dan Griffin (8), Philip O’Connor (7) and Paul Clarke (2). Kilkenny top scorers: Taylor Young (32), Julian O’Keeffe (15) and James Butler (15).

Words & Pics: Eamonn Keogh The Scotts Lakers clinched the Division 1B title following a dramatic six-point victory over Paris Texas Kilkenny in the Killarney Sports and Leisure Centre last Saturday night. Trailing 8170 with five minutes remaining, the game appeared well out of reach for the home side but the Lakers enjoyed a storming finish. They hit 17 unanswered points while keeping Kilkenny scoreless for the closing five minutes. Indeed, it was a match where both sides enjoyed significant periods of dominance at different stages. Scotts Lakers squandered a 13-point advantage after leading 21-8 at one stage in the first quarter while Kilkenny led by the same margin, 56-43, early in the third. The closing five minutes where Scotts Lakers went on a 17-0 run was an outstanding finish from the home side but it also reflected a dismal period from Kilkenny who ran out of steam and pressed their own self-destruct button. Both sides went into this match at the top of table knowing that a victory would secure the title. The Lakers were out of the blocks early with Antuan Bootle, Dan Griffin and Dailian Mason all on target to open up 15-4 lead midway through the first quarter. The Lakers extended their advantage to 21-8 with less than three minutes left but Kilkenny responded well through Julian O’Keeffe and American Taylor Young to narrow the gap to 23-15 at the end of the first quarter. Lakers maintained their advantage with a

three-pointer from team captain Philip O’Connor to lead 30-23. Paul Clarke, off the bench, also added a basket but Taylor Young really stepped it up for Kilkenny and he tied the game at 34 points each with 4:22 remaining in the half. Kilkenny took the lead for the first time through Brian Hogan, 34-36, with four minutes left and with O’Keeffe and Young continuing the impress, Kilkenny were in front 43-44 at the interval break. It didn’t get much better for Scotts Lakers upon the resumption and with Taylor Young dominating, Kilkenny opened up a 13-point lead (43-56) early in the third quarter. After trailing by the same margin in the first quarter, it was an impressive 26-point turnaround by the visitors. It was a full three minutes before Scotts Lakers opening their scoring account in the second half and they trailed 50-60 midway through the third quarter . Antuan Bootle and Mark Greene kept the home side in contention with some big three-pointers but Kilkenny were in command to lead 61-72 at the end of the third quarter. It looked all over for the Lakers when a Paul Leigh three-pointer pushed Kilkenny 65-77 clear with less than seven minutes remaining and the home side trailed 70-81 with five minutes left. Amazingly, Kilkenny failed to score again as Mark Greene and Andrew Fitzgerald narrowed it to 74-81 with 4:30 to go. Kilkenny were in serious foul trouble at this stage and accurate free throw shooting from Mark

Greene and Antuan Bootle cut the gap to 80-81 with 2:30 left. With the home supporters on their feet sensing victory, a big Dan Griffin basket raised the roof and Scotts Lakers took the lead, 82-81 with 1:52 remaining. A huge three-pointer followed from Dailian Mason with 30 seconds left while Philip O’Connor added the insurance baskets to secure a memorable six point win for the Lakers. Kilkenny will look back on this game as one that slipped away so easily. Significant factors in their loss will point to their scoreless return in the closing five minutes. They managed just four baskets in the final quarter and American Taylor Young was held scoreless by great defence from the Lakers in that period. Also the impressive Julian O’Keeffe, who netted 15 first half points, was held scoreless for the duration of the whole second half. Full credit to Scotts Lakers for the great comeback and superb defence that limited the Kilkenny threat. The overall Lakers performance wasn’t one of their better ones but it was a very rewarding one for coach Cormac O’Donoghue and his squad and securing the Shield title was a real bonus considering that it is the Killarney side’s first season back in National League basketball after nearly a decade. Lakers scorers: Antuan Bootle (32), Dailian Mason (17), Mark Greene (12), Andrew Fitzgerald (9), Dan Griffin (8), Philip O’Connor (7) and Paul Clarke (2). Celtic Host Dingle In Crucial League Match Words: Adam Moynihan Killarney Celtic are back in league action this weekend as they face Dingle in a fixture that could have major ramifications for all the teams in contention at the top end of the Kerry Premier A. Celtic are currently in second place, three points behind neighbours Athletic with four games in hand. Dingle are level on 22 points with Celtic and have three games in hand on the leaders so this tie is a real six-pointer. From Athletic’s point of view, it’s probably better if Celtic win. If they run away in first, we’ll have a better chance of catching Dingle and sneaking into second. We still have to play both teams. Dingle will be hoping to make amends for the reverse fixture in September when Celtic spanked them 7-0 in Gallarus. The 2016 champions have won every game since then, though, and were very impressive that day against us when they played us off the pitch. Paudie Quinn and Seán Fitzgerald are very dangerous up front and they have some nice ballers like Luke Burgess and Joe Sheehy in midfield. Just a brief sidenote, it was surprising to see them pick up a walkover against Listowel last week. It’s really disappointing that a club as big as Listowel couldn’t field a team for a home game, especially considering how good they are. They took points off us and Dingle in their first two games and people were talking about them possibly contending for the

title. It’s especially frustrating for us because we need Dingle to drop points but look, it’s not Dingle’s fault. I’m sure they would rather have beaten Listowel on the pitch. We benefited from walkovers last year as well so we can’t complain. It’s just sad. Anyway. Both Celtic and Dingle have plenty of goals in them so it could be a serious game on Friday night. Celtic will possibly be slight favourites coming off the back of their resounding win over Southend United in the quarter final of the Munster Junior Cup. It was the second time in a month that the Hoops travelled to Ozier Park following their 2-1 extra time victory over Waterford Crystal in the last round. Last weekend’s result was even more emphatic as they ran out 3-0 winners against a strong Southend side. Gary Keane, Peter McCarthy and Chris O’Leary found the target for the visitors. It certainly won’t get any easier for Celtic in this competition because the standard is really, really high. Janesboro are already in the hat for the semi-finals and two of Newmarket Celtic, St Michael’s, Carrick United B and Pike Rovers will be joining them. Celtic’s track record, both home and away, speaks for itself, however, so they won’t fear anyone in the next round.

“There’s Getting Beaten Legion & Spa Back & There’s Getting Bate” In Div 1 With A Bang Words: Adam Moynihan

There’s getting beaten and there’s getting bate. Kerry got bate by Dublin last weekend and regardless of where both teams are in their development, serious questions are bound to be asked in the aftermath of such a capitulation. The first half was promising enough and we saw glimpses of what David Clifford is capable of, even at his age and even in such difficult circumstances. It’s a testament to his talent and reputation already that the fans on the Hill responded so boisterously to his misses on Sunday. You often see it in soccer. The home fans react differently when a visiting in-form or elite player misses an opportunity. It’s relief more than anything. Things could have been different if Seán O’Shea had converted that chance before half time but, in all honesty, losing him and Geaney at the break was the real turning point. No disrespect to Barry John and Michael Geaney but Paul Geaney and O’Shea are top players so there is a bit of a drop off there. The substitutions in general left a lot of supporters scratching their heads. In the 48th minute, with the game sliding fairly rapidly away from Kerry, Fitzmaurice decided to take off Kevin McCarthy, a corner forward, and replace him with Fionn Fitzgerald, a back. It was a very strange one. Then

Words: Adam Moynihan

he brought Daithí Casey on with five minutes to go when Kerry were down around 40 points. Look, I can’t exactly claim to be impartial because Daithí is a friend of mine but I don’t think anyone could honestly say that he’s getting a fair crack at it. There’s no accounting for taste I suppose but, again, it’s just strange. There’s no shame whatsoever in being beaten by Dublin. They are a savage team. If Kerry were playing the football that Jim Gavin’s side are playing at the moment, we’d be falling all over ourselves and it’s hard to see anyone toppling them any time soon. But, despite the undoubted gap that exists between Dublin and us currently, there’s a nagging feeling pervading the county that we’re not making the best of what we have. Surely the Dubs, who were short five of their seven current All Stars the last day, aren’t that much better than us? If they are, it’s going to be a long few years.

Kerry manager Eamonn Fitzmaurice. Pic: Don MacMonagle.

Legion and Spa both made a winning return to the top flight last weekend as they picked up impressive wins against two of the stronger teams in the division. James O’Sullivan, father of Jamie, was appointed Legion manager relatively late in the day but his tenure could hardly have gotten off to a better start as his side defeated Dingle back in Páirc an Ághasaigh. Jamie O’Sullivan top-scored for the visitors with eight points while a crucial late goal from Jack O’Neill proved to be decisive as Legion ran out 0-12 to 1-10 winners. It’s the second time in a year that Legion have defeated Dingle in Dingle following their superb Club Championship victory last April. Spa, meanwhile, racked up a monstrous score as they beat Rathmore 2-21 to 3-11 in Tullig. Mike O’Donoghue (0-4), Shane Cronin (1-2), Evan Cronin (0-5) and Dara Moynihan (14) accounted for the bulk of the Spa scoring in a game that was also noteworthy for the long-awaited return from injury of former minor All-Ireland winning captain Liam Kearney. Defending champions Dr Crokes were the odd ones out in terms of Killarney clubs as they were unable to shake a dogged Glenbeigh-Glencar side in their season opener. It was a low-scoring game, especially in

the second half where both sides only managed three points apiece. In the end, there was no separating the teams as they played out a 0-9 to 0-9 draw. Elsewhere, newly-promoted Beaufort had a great result at home to John Mitchels. They won 2-16 to 0-13. In Division 2, Kilcummin also started their campaign off right with a dominant 1-16 to 0-11 victory over Austin Stacks.

Conor Wins Brand New Kerry Jersey St Brendan’s College student Conor O’Leary is the owner of a brand new Kerry jersey after being named as the lucky winner of our Killarney Advertiser Sport Twitter competition. Conor’s name was randomly selected from the list of readers who followed our new @ AdvertiserSport account and gave us a retweet over the past two weeks. Conor, Adam Moynihan and Niall ‘Botty’ O’Callaghan of the Kerry GAA Store convened on Wednesday for the prizegiving where the winner decided to go for the classic green and gold

home jersey. Conor is a keen athlete himself. As well as lining out for Kilcummin and Mastergeeha, he was also a member of the Sem team that won consecutive All-Irelands in the last couple of years. Speaking at the presentation, Adam thanked Botty and the Kerry GAA Store for sponsoring the prize. “Fair play to Botty,” he said. “It was a great prize and the perfect way to launch our new Twitter account.” Follow @AdvertiserSport to stay up to date with all the latest sports news from home and abroad.

Around The World

Carragher Spitting Scandal: The Whole Sorry Scene Is Just Tragic Words: Adam Moynihan

I was slow to actually watch the footage of Jamie Carragher spitting through his car window at fan who had been goading him. The headline was depressing enough on its own. In the end, I did. It was even worse than I imagined. It was deplorable behaviour by the Sky Sports pundit, who throughout his career has been painted as a kind of “man of the people”. He has described it as a moment of madness but think about it, what would it take for you to actually spit at someone? Get angry, fair enough. Physically confront someone, maybe. But spit at someone? I don’t know about you but it would take a small bit more than a rival fan saying “2-1” in the wake of a defeat. Athletic players get worse than that on a Sunday night and we get around ten people at our games. Don’t get me wrong, I’m sure he gets plagued by idiots on a regular basis and he was probably

wound up multiple times that day alone. You’d think that after 20 years in the game he’d be able to brush that kind of thing off. The other side of it is the guy behind the camera. Provoking a public figure like that is bad enough on its own but to do it in front of his child is pathetic. You can actually hear the daughter asking him to stop. She’s clearly mortified. That’s before you even take into account the fact that he’s focussing on filming a celebrity when he should have his eyes on the road. He doesn’t even seem to be disappointed with Carragher’s actions.

His daughter has just been spat on and he probably has pound signs in his eyes. And then, of course, the tribalism kicks in. United fans lambaste Carragher. Liverpool fans lash the fan. Everyone joins in to debate whose actions were more despicable, and completely miss the point in the process. It’s not a competition. They both behaved terribly. The whole sorry scene is tragic. Should Carragher lose his job? To be honest, I think he’ll be very fortunate if he keeps it. Imagine if I did something that crazy on the way home from a game? And that’s the Killarney Advertiser. Carragher is representing one of the biggest media companies in the world. Incidentally, the ex-Liverpool player is visiting Killarney next month to meet fans and talk about his career. It should make for an interesting evening. Just maybe don’t drive up beside him and tell him the score in the Liverpool game.

“Winningest” Spurs Could Miss Playoffs They have been described as the “winningest” team (by Americans, obviously) in professional sports but the San Antonio Spurs are in danger of missing the NBA Playoffs for the first time in 20 years. A three-game losing streak, which culminated in a 109-93 defeat to the Houston Rockets on Tuesday, meant Gregg Popovich’s side have slipped to 10th in the Western Conference. Only the top eight make the postseason. Injuries are unquestionably a key

reason behind the decline. Superstar Kawhi Leonard, key scorer LaMarcus Aldridge and veteran Argentinian Manu Ginobli are all currently unavailable for selection The absence of 26-year-old small forward Leonard been especially damaging for the Spurs. The former Finals MVP, two-time All Star and two-time Defensive Player of the Year is expected to make his return from a nagging quad injury in the coming week but he has only played nine games all season. The five-

time NBA champions will need their talisman to get back in the swing of things very quickly indeed. The Texas ball club, who have a

better winning percentage than any other American sports team over the past 30 years, have just 15 games to climb back into a playoff spot. The West has been extremely competitive for a number of years but the Spurs have been the one constant, making at least the conference semi-finals in 15 of Pop’s 21 seasons at the helm. If they manage to challenge again in 2018, it could well be one of the legendary coach’s greatest achievements to date.

The Members of the Club breathed a huge collective sigh of relief as all of our Courses were Open for play last weekend, which allowed our Competition to go-ahead, and just as we were looking forward to trying to get our Competition schedule back on track, the long range weather forecast for Sunday next is predicting that a further version of “The Beast from the East” to return is on the cards so to speak. We all hope that the forecasters may be incorrect on this occasion as

they were deadly accurate with their predictions just two weekends ago. The Competition on Sunday was a singles stableford Competition played on Killeen Course, this competition was very kindly sponsored by Keane’s Jewellers, and it is our first GOY Competition of the new-year, and in order to facilitate the usual very large entry, it was played via two shotgun starts. Due to the benign weather conditions the scoring was very good, and the winner with the excellent score of 40 pts was the in-form Brian Holden, Brian only won by virtue of a better back nine holes as in 2nd place with the same score was Derek O’Keeffe, Derek is one of our new Members and only joined up as a Member of the Club in 2017. On The Ball Dr Crokes Club

County League Division 1 - Round 1, Glenbeigh / Glencar 0-9 Dr Crokes 0-9. In a game which ended in a draw neither side could argue that they left it behind them. In my opinion a draw was a fair result. Both sides had chances of wining but the defences on both sides were on top and kept down scores from play right through the game. A first half statistic our management would not be happy with that our forwards contributed just one point from play. The half time score was 0-6 each. The Second half was again nip and tuck. In fairness to the forwards on both sides the heavy surface made it a day for defences. Even though our opponents had the first score of this half, a point in the 33rd minute, we sent over three points without reply to go two points ahead going into the final quarter. Glenbeigh / Glencar had the only two scores in the last fifteen minutes, two points for a draw when the Referee souded the full time whistle. It’s still only March and the game was good preparation for the next months Club Championship St Patrick’s Parade: Dr Crokes are marching in the St Patrick’s Parade this Saturday. All members young and old are asked to participate, meeting at 1.15pm on Mission Road in Club Colours. Parents are asked to bring their children to Mission Road and to be there to collect them when parade finishes in same place.

Milltown Castlemaine GAA

SENIORS: Our seniors (sponsored by Larkins Bar and Restaurant/ Kelly’s Londis, Topshop), opened their County League campaign on Sunday versus Currow. A victory was most important to get our seniors off to a good start. Gavin McKenna and Stephen Roche were very strong in defence and so Currow had to wait until the 14th minute for their next score- a point from Pa McCarthy. M/C had Cathal Moriarty dismissed ( having popped over some great points). This gave Currow much needed confidence and they went on to score three more points before the break. Four further un-answered points from the home side gave them a four point lead. Cormac Leane pulled off a fine save after an impressive attack by Currow but their perseverance paid off and so the green flag was raised in the 15th minute with a goal from Currow’s Mike McCarthy. Currow 1/06, M/C-0/10 Seamus Dowd entered the field of play for MC and the next attack saw Gavin Horan pop over another point. In the 28th minute, there was some confusion and Currow had a goal dis allowed by the referee. Currow’s woes continued with a dismissal and so at the final whistle- it was M/C who collected the valuable County League points. Final score: M/C 0/13, Currow:1/08.

Fossa GAA

COUNTY LEAGUE: Fossa seniors played Cordal in the opening round of the county league in Fossa on Sunday. This was an entertaining game with both sides having periods of dominance. Fossa started brightly with Paudie Clifford and Alan Buckley opening the scoring, Cordal equalised but with Tadgh O’Shea in superb scoring form they quickly opened up a lead over their visitors. Fossa played well in this half with their defence solid which was superbly marshalled by Kevin O’Sullivan, Donald O’Sullivan and Paudie Clifford showed all their experience leading the line well up front and coupled with Tadhg’s unerring accuracy, they lead at the

break 0-12 to 0-06. Cordal took control of matters in the opening minutes of the second half and kicked a couple of scores, however Tadgh O’Shea kept the scoreboard ticking over with a brace of points and a fine individual effort from Paudie Clifford meant that Fossa held on to win on a score of 0-18 to 0-14. SENIOR LADIES: The senior ladies had a comprenhesive win over John Mitchells in their opening round of the County League with a 4-12 to 0-06 victory, well done ladies.

Rugby News ... Words: Liam Murphy

Ireland: NatWest 6 Nations champions! Isn’t that a nice thing to be able to say with one round to go in the championship? Last weekend saw Joe Schmidt’s men batter a fancied Scotland at the Aviva in front of an energetic and excited home sell-out crowd. In typical Irish fashion, everyone from players to the man on the street played down Ireland’s chances going into this game. But quietly everyone knew that a bonus point win and a French win over

round defeat in the Co League to Castleisland Desmonds. After a slow start we brought ourselves back into the game with a Lee O Donghue goal and went in level at half time. Desmonds regained the lead with 2 quick points at the start of the second half and kept that lead until the final whistle. FIXTURE: Glenfesk Vs Fossa, Sunday March 18th at 2pm LOTTO: No winner of the lotto which took place in Spillanes Bar on 12/03/2018. Jackpot €5,400. Numbers were 3, 12, 14, 28. Killarney Legion

CO.LEAGUE DIV.1 RD.1: Dingle 0-12 Killarney Legion 1-10. Tosnú maith ag na soinsir sa sraith nua I bPáirc an Ághasaigh tráthnóna Dé Satharn seo chaite.A winning start to the county league as the seniors turned in a performance built on determination, discipline and no mean skill. Cold and blustery both teams served up a competitive game with Dingle using a short passing game which the Legion countered with a high work rate from start to finish. Little separated the sides at the break with the homeside trailing by a point as the sides gathered themselves for what was to

be a tight affair in the run in. Manager James O Sullivan made some astute adjustments at the break and indeed his use of his bench - non more so than Sean McCarthy - all contributed in telling fashion. Unfair as usual to single any individual but the Legion saw Danny Sheehan at fullback give a faultless performance while Jonathan Lyne was dynamic all through showing great leadership. Shaun Keane at midfield was powerful and Jamie O Sullivan at full forward gave an exhibition ending with a personal tally of 8 pts. Testimony to the teams determination was when Dingle hit the front for the first time with three mins.to go they worked their way down field and as a 30m.free dropped short the ever willing Jack O Neill out jumped the Dingle defence to fist the ball to the net. Injury time saw a single point go Dingle’s way but the points belonged to the green and whites. LÁ FÉILE PHÁDRAIG: A reminder to all to gather at Mission Road at 1.30p.m.St. Partricks Day wearing club colours and flags. Further information from Stella 0868228937 or Tommy 0863171312. FREWEN CUP SEMI FINAL: St Brendans College made the long journey to Ferbane last Saturday. The Paul McGirr Cup is presented to the U16.5 A football winners. St Pats Cavan blitzed through the Ulster campaign with a strong running team. The management and players of St Brendans College were ready for a fantastic battle on the day. Two well drilled teams produced a superb display of football. The scoring power of the Kingdom school attack proved crucial to the result. Dylan Callaghan and Darragh Donoghue raised green flags to decide the outcome. The team showed massive heart and desire to reach the All Ireland final. Ireland On The Hunt For Grand Slam

England would see us good. And so it came to pass. The match started slowly enough with both sides testing the waters and the visitors hit the scoreboard with a Greg Laidlaw penalty in the 12th minute. However, an errant pass saw another interception from Jacob Stockdale who ran in for his 5th try of the championship on the 20-minute mark. Sexton duly converted, though his kicking from the hand was shaky at best throughout the match. Just

before half time, Stockdale scored his second try to make it 14-3 at half time. The second half proved even better for the home side as Conor Murray dove in over the line from a yard or so to score in the 46th minute with Sexton converting again. 5 minutes later, in the hunt for the bonus point, Ireland took the eye off the ball and Scotland stole a try against the run of play. But Seán Cronin came on to replace captain Rory Best and scored

a try to secure the bonus point. A cracker of a day at the Aviva for all who travelled! A few hours later and England were put to the sword in Paris, though France made it a nail-biter to the end. France held on to win 22 points to 16 and help Ireland win the championship for the 3rd time in 5 years. Well done, Ireland! Next weekend they go on the hunt for the Grand Slam against an English side who have already lost two matches so far.
