Ireland's oldest man celebrates 107th birthday!
| By Michelle Crean
EXCLUSIVE
And it's a title he's very proud of - as he wasn't expected to live past the age of six after contracting the Spanish Flu. But after months in bed he eventually recovered. Unfortunately his mother Bridie, a teacher in Glencar, succumbed to the illness some months later. His father Daniel, also a teacher in Glencar, died in his 40s. On Tuesday, the champagne was flowing at his home in Muckross, and there were so many cards that he hadn't had time to open them all! Not many can say that they have experienced the War of Independence, the Civil War, World War One and Two - but Michael, who worked at sea and then went onto a career in aviation, also remembers the only mode of transport being a horse and cart to get from his home place to Killarney for shopping - to later in life experiencing the contrast with two trips on a Concord to New York. Michael also went from using the social media of the day - Morse code - in his early career, to later learning to how to send text messages. Today he says he's agile and "thankfully comfortable" and enjoyed all the well wishes, cards and presents including his seventh medal from the president. "107 years ago I kicked myself into this

world," Michael told the Killarney Advertiser this week. "I was born in Glencar to Daniel and Bridie, I travelled the world for five years, three in the last war. I then changed to aviation in the early '40s and stayed in aviation for the rest of my life based in Ballygreen between Shannon and Ennis." Michael came to Killarney 40 years ago in 1980 with his wife Joan, who died in 2008.
"I built a holiday home up the side of a mountain a few years before I retired. Then, when I retired, I sold the house in Limerick and have been here ever since. There's no nicer place in the world - and I've been around most of it!"
SECRET TO A LONG LIFE Michael let the Killarney Advertiser in on a little secret, saying he puts his longevity down to a daily glass of whiskey.
"The secret is a glass of Red Breast Whiskey every night before bed," he said. With COVID, he thinks it's very unfair that it has happened but feels people should do as they're asked and stay within the confines of their home as much as possible. These days he is enjoying his time with his family and watching the History Channel on Sky - and not many can say they have lived through most of it!
Jam to reopen next week | By Michelle Crean A much loved favourite Killarney cafe - which unexpectedly closed earlier this year - is to make a big comeback when it reopens its doors next week under new ownership. A date for early to mid-week next week has been set for Jam's reopening and the new owners have even hired some of the original staff and plan to keep it as close to the original service as possible. Due to the current Level 3 restrictions, the business, now called Jam Cáfe in Old Market Lane, will first operate as a takeaway service followed by a full opening once the Government gives the go ahead.
The business was acquired by the owners of TOBA and they've big plans to source produce locally to help further sustain local jobs. "We're delighted to be reopening," Darragh Walshe, owner of TOBA told the Killarney Advertiser yesterday (Thursday). "It's such a cornerstone business in Killarney. I know from talking to people around town how important it is for Killarney. We had TOBA and we always thought it'd be great to have a second business in Killarney if the right opportunity came up. When Jam became available we were lucky enough to get the winning bid. We want to reopen the business as it was and do everything that Jam were doing and

meet the standards that were set by the previous owners."
KEEPING IT LOCAL
With uncertainty over COVID, Darragh explained that keeping it local is now more important than ever. "We are going to use local suppliers including Ballyhar Foods, O'Shea's Fruit and Veg, Spillane's Seafood and John Lane for meat and dry goods amongst others." They have hired four staff to date includ-
ing Jam's new Manager Deirdre Casey from Killarney and Head Chef is Shirley O'Sullivan. But, he explained that more staff will be part of the cafe's future going forward. "We've plans to employ 10 to 12 people. We're starting with a base of four and will bring in new people in the coming weeks and months as the lockdown period eases. We've some exciting plans in place over the next few weeks which will be announced shortly."

€40,000 funding to enhance Killarney | By Sean Moriarty Killarney town has received €40,000 through the Town & Village Renewal Scheme. The funding, welcomed this week by Cllr Michael Gleeson has been approved to 'Develop the Killarney town story through ‘place making’ and making Killarney an inviting place to live'. Minister Heather Humphries TD, Minister for Rural and Community Development, announced the towns and villages that were successful under the 2020 Town & Village Renewal Scheme - Accelerated Measure Round 3 and the Accelerated Measure Round 3 – Large Towns. In total Kerry received €114,350.00 with Tralee receiving €40,000 for 'Shopfront enhancement scheme', Sneem €39,600 for 'Improved access to riverside recreation area', Ballybunion/Ballyheigue €24,750 for the 'Installation of bicycle infrastructure across both towns', Ardfert received €25,000 for 'Community Recreational spaces' while €25,000 was allocated to Inch for 'Picnic recreational area at Inch Beach'. "At this difficult time in the country it is very gratifying to get €40,000 from the Minister to enhance Killarney and make an even better place in which to live," Cllr Michael Gleeson this week told the Killarney Advertiser. "It would be most welcome if some could be used to provide further bicycle parking stands as these are a vital part of promoting Killarney as a cycling destination for all, locals and visitors. There will inevitably be greater emphasis on promoting holidaying at home from now on and Killarney must be ready to offer the very best facilities to people. Having cycle parking locations allows Killarney look for the money to develop new and safe cycle lanes in and around the town."

Kilcummin man bags a hole-in-one
| By Sean Moriarty There's a great element of luck involved - so much so that it's as rare as winning the Lotto - according to a local man who bagged himself a hole-in-one on Sunday. Kilcummin man Dermot Kelly from Chapel Cross was stunned when he realised his shot had gone straight into the cup when teeing off on hole four at O'Mahony's course. Dermot, who has a handicap of 30, had hit the shot but wasn't sure if it had gone straight in. However, after hearing the pen rattle, he explained that he and his playing partners Margaret O'Sullivan, Fergal O'Sullivan and Dan Moynihan went to check and they were elated to discover he had landed the perfect shot! "It's a nice thing to happen," Dermot
told the Killarney Advertiser. "It has never happened to me before. We heard the pen rattle and it landed in the cup. We were looking around to find it and said maybe it's in the hole. All your life it's something you'd like to happen but I never thought I'd get a hole-in-one, I didn't even dream of it. Some pro golfers never get a hole-inone! It's a pure fluke. My handicap is 30, one of the worst handicaps in the club. It's like winning the Lotto." Dermot, a retired teacher, enjoys a weekly game of golf with friends and says it's one of the few games people can enjoy nowadays because of social distancing. "We're two meters apart and have our own clubs. It's a great pastime as it's COVID friendly. It's a bit of fun in these strange times."

BBC crew impressed with Killarney friendliness The BBC crew currently working in Killarney have high praise for the hospitality and friendliness of people of the town. | By Michelle Crean According to the Department of Culture, Heritage and the Gaeltacht the company in question are working on a BBC wildlife documentary which will
be produced and shown in the coming years. In a response to a query from the Killarney Advertiser, the Department said that the staff working on the project for
the BBC "have been very taken with the hospitality and friendliness" of everyone they have so far met. "The content of the final programme is intended to cover a the broad range of habitats and species across all of the British Isles and Ireland, ranging from the marine to the terrestrial. Following a site visit and recce in early 2020, the
company were impressed with the mix of wild habitats that are in Killarney National Park and the natural wild Red Deer that are present. To date they have been very taken with the hospitality and friendliness of all that they have met and are impressed with the quality and size of the Red Deer stag that are currently in rut in the National Park."

Irish Cancer Society calls for online donations
The Irish Cancer Society is appealing for online donations after their Pink Ribbon sales in Kerry, which raise funds for services for people affected by breast cancer, have been cancelled due to COVID-19 restrictions. | By Sean Moriarty The Irish Cancer Society are asking for online donations to help address the shortfall as a result of the cancellation. Each year, the dedicated fundraisers look forward to doing their bit in the local community, bringing some colour to the streets in support of services and research for breast cancer services and it’s disappointing for everyone that this won’t be happening this year, but you can still help. Money raised from the sale of Pink Ribbons helps to fund life-saving cancer research and free support services locally for people affected by breast cancer. “Every year, we come together to sell Pink Ribbons to support breast cancer patients," Kathrina Breen from Killarney, a Pink Ribbon volunteer for the Irish Cancer Society, said. "The support is always amazing, everyone is so generous. We are so disappointed to not be out on the streets this year, but we want to encourage every-
one to please show their support to breast cancer patients by donating online at cancer.ie to get their digital pink ribbon this year." Rosemary Simmons, National Fundraising Lead at the Irish Cancer Society added "unfortunately due to COVID-19 restrictions, we have had to cancel our street sales across Kerry this year". "We are asking members of the public to show their support by donating to the Irish Cancer Society online at www. cancer.ie/donate or call 1850 60 60 60 to ensure we can continue to meet increased demand for support from people affected by breast cancer. With your help we can be there to ensure no one has to face breast cancer alone. Your donation will directly help provide free care and support for breast cancer patients and their loved ones across Ireland." Kathrina added that volunteers can organise their own events online. "If anyone wants to help out by holding a virtual event they can contact me on 087 2612992."
One local hotel who had to close its doors due to the Level 3 restrictions donated up to half a dozen crates of fresh food to a Kerry charity. Adapt Kerry Women’s Refuge and Support Services received a very generous donation of food, which included fruit, vegetables and meat, from The Lake Hotel in Killarney. And it's the second time since the beginning of the pandemic that staff at the hotel have thought of them as they donated during the lockdown. "It's a worthwhile charity," Executive Chef Noel Enright said. "It's the second time we've donated, we also did it at the start of the lockdown. It's nice to do something to help." Adapt General Manager Catherine Casey told the Killarney Advertiser this week that they are very grateful them. "We are very grateful to all the team at the hotel," she said. "We recognise
that this is a difficult time for the hospitality sector and even though faced with another temporary closing they were able to reach out and support the women and children that use our service. We have also received food donations from Tralee Golf Club and from individuals, and I want to thank everyone who has offered support." Adapt Kerry relies heavily on donations and their charity shop accepts clothes, shoes, bric-a-brac and books, she added. "We are also grateful to everyone who donates and purchases from the shop. COVID-19 continues to challenge all businesses and charities. We know it is also putting pressure on the women and children we support, both in refuge and through our outreach services. We know that restrictions can make this time more difficult for families living with coercive control and abuse." Adapt would encourage women to seek support by ringing them on 066 7129100.
COVID TIME CAPSULE: As part of National Tree Day Ms Murphy's TY Green Schools' class from St Brigid's planted an Irish native Scott's Pine. The girls have dedicated this tree to anyone who has been affected by COVID-19. All the girls wrote a letter to themselves and buried them in a time capsule which they hope to dig up and open in 10 years time - in 2030!

KILLARNEY ADVERTISER REPORT
BUDGET 2021
SPECIAL REPORT
| By Michelle Crean
Minister's Speech BUDGET 2021: Minister for Finance, Paschal Donohoe on the steps of Government buildings holding Budget 2021 documents shortly before addressing Dáil Éireann on Tuesday.
In his speech on Tuesday Minister for Finance, Paschal Donohoe said that the country has “faced numerous difficulties since independence, but never one like COVID-19; an invisible enemy that has caused great suffering, and disrupted so much of what is central to our well-being”. “As a result of last year’s Budget we entered 2020 with a surplus of €1.3 billion and a Rainy Day Fund worth €1½ billion. Entering the year with a surplus also reaffirmed our reputation with the international bond markets; helping to keep our interest payments affordable as we borrowed more. To-date, the total value of support meas-
ures amounts to €24½ billion. This is nearly eight times last year’s Budget plan. We have never experienced a challenge like this in modern times; but equally Ireland has never delivered such a strong response.” He added that “crucial to this recovery is understanding that the health of the country and the health of the economy
16.10.2020 are interdependent”. “The better our public health, the stronger our economic health. The Government understands the trade-offs in public health choices. We appreciate the impact of decisions on lives and livelihoods.” Secondly, in relation to COVID-19, Budget 2021 has been framed on the assumption of the continued presence of the virus in Ireland next year, and the absence of a broadly available vaccine. Looking to the final months of 2020, GDP is projected to decline by 2½ per cent for the year as a whole, with domestic demand falling by 6 per cent. "The unemployment rate is expected to decline slowly throughout the second half of the year, reaching 12¼ per cent in the fourth quarter, with an annual average rate of just under 16 per cent. However, this figure could change depending on the overall path of the virus. My department is forecasting a total loss of approximately 320,000 jobs in 2020, with this recovering by approximately 155,000 jobs next year." He explained that the budgetary landscape has transformed dramatically in the space of a few months with a deficit of €21½ billion, or 6.2 percent is currently projected for 2020. “We are reducing the deficit carefully over the coming year, and this is one of my key budgetary objectives. As such, Budget 2021 forecasts a deficit of €20½ billion or 5.7 percent.” “The National Economic Plan, to be published next month, will also have a key role to play in mapping out our economic pathway for the coming years, and for developing economic resilience in a post-COVID world.”
VAT reduction a welcome but essential move Killarney Chamber of Tourism and Commerce has hailed the Budget 2021 provision to reduce VAT for tourism from 13.5% to nine percent as very positive and welcome - but stressed that it was an absolutely essential decision that had to be made in the circumstances. Chamber President, Paul Sherry, said the fact that the revised rate will come into force on November 1 and will remain in place until December 2021 is encouraging and it puts the building blocks in place to allow the devastated tourism industry to begin what will undoubtedly be a slow and difficult recovery from the devastating COVID-19 pandemic. “It is really good news for our hotels, guesthouses and all others involved in tourism which is Killarney’s lifeblood,” he said. "The saving will be passed on to cus-

tomers and, hopefully, it will help to attract more people to visit and socialise in the town and the county of Kerry where the welcome mat is always at the door and where tourism is our
proven speciality." The Chamber has also welcomed the new scheme for businesses which closed because of COVID-19 with the Government to make a payment, to a maximum of €5,000 per week, based on 2019 average weekly turnover. The scheme is effective from now until the end of March next year with the first payments due in mid-November. It will operate while Level 3 restrictions are in place and it will cease when they are lifted but if restrictions are extended, a subsequent claim can be made. “Overall, in a very difficult year for everybody, with unprecedented pressures, there was much to welcome and some real nuggets of good news in Budget 2021. We in Chamber were particularly pleased with the €55 million for a tourism business support scheme, €5 million for tourism product development and the forward-thinking but essential move that will result in commercial rates being waived for remainder of 2020."

2021 Kerry hoteliers Budget at a glance welcome Budget 2021 Hotels and guesthouses in Kerry have welcomed the range of measures and supports announced in Budget 2021 by Ministers Paschal Donohoe and Michael McGrath. Irish Hotels Federation (IHF) Kerry branch chair, Bernadette Randles welcomed in particular the extension of employment supports to the end of 2021 and the rates waiver scheme along with the reduction in the tourism VAT rate, which she said would help aid the recovery of the industry. She said the new COVID Restriction Support Scheme, the Tourism Business Support Scheme and funds for tourism product development, are welcome recognition of the challenges being faced by businesses. “The extension of employment supports until the end of December 2021 is very welcome," Ms Randles said. CHALLENGES FACING TOURISM "However, we are disappointed that the rates of the EWSS scheme were not increased. This does not recognise the challenges facing tourism and hospitality businesses in retaining key staff during the difficult winter/spring months and against the backdrop of additional restrictions. We also welcome the reduction in the tourism VAT to 9%, which is the right tourism VAT rate. It is an important measure that will stimulate demand and aid the recovery of the tourism and hospitality industry. After the last recession, tourism created the most jobs nationally - 90,000 new jobs - and there is no doubt that the 9% VAT rate contributed significantly to this increased employment. Pre-COVID, our industry supported almost 270,000 livelihoods, including 15,700 jobs, and generated €592m in revenues here in Kerry. This accounts for one in 10 jobs across the country, 70% of which were outside of Dublin. Reducing the Tourism VAT will help sustain jobs and communities across Ireland." As well as providing a stimulus in the Irish economy, the reduction will improve competitiveness as an international tourism destination, she added. However, she explained that it should be a permanent measure, at a minimum of five years. "Contracts with tour operators for example, which can account for over 30% of many hotels’ business, are agreed two years in advance. Before today, VAT on Irish Hotels was the second highest in Europe and higher than 30 European countries. The UK – our nearest largest market and one of our biggest competitors - for example, currently has a VAT rate of 5% so today’s reduction is an important boost to our competitiveness.
A total of €17.75 billion was announced by Finance Minister Paschal Donohoe which he delivered in the Dáil on Tuesday afternoon.
THIS INCLUDES: | Pack of 20 cigarettes to increase by 50c.
........................................................................................................... | Fuel allowance to rise by €3.50 a week to €28
........................................................................................................... IHF: Irish Hotels Federation (IHF) Kerry branch chair, Bernadette Randles welcomed the extension of employment supports to the end of 2021. LOCAL AUTHORITY RATES "We cautiously welcome the extension of the local authority rates waiver period to December 31 2020 and we look forward to engaging further with Government if, as expected, COVID restrictions are still in place at the end of the year. While every help is welcome, the time-period should coincide with business interruption due to COVID-19 and for a minimum of 12 months. After that, payment of local authority rates should be based on reduced levels of activity due to the crisis and until the industry has recovered. Businesses cannot be expected to pay rates on historical turnover figures that do not reflect the significantly lower levels of business that hoteliers are experiencing."
COMPENSATION SCHEME Ms Randles also welcomed the announcement that the Government is to introduce a compensation scheme for businesses forced to close due to Government restrictions. “We welcome the recognition of the enormous hardship that these businesses face, including those in the tourism sector and we look forward to seeing the full details.” Additionally, she welcomed the €55 million allocated for a Tourism Business Support Scheme as well as the €5 million for tourism product development, highlighting the strong success of products including the Wild Atlantic Way in increasing domestic and overseas visitor numbers in recent years. While welcoming the range of measures and supports, Ms Randles said that additional liquidity measures are still required to help fund hotels during the coming months as a result of the cash flow lost out due to COVID-19 restrictions. “We will continue to seek an extension of the moratorium on bank term loans from six months to 12 months. Government must continue to support us on finding the way forward on this as we feel it is a missed opportunity."

Local school launches Hallowe'en decorating competition | By Sean Moriarty
When black cats prowl and pumpkins gleam, may luck be yours this Hallowe'en - that's the message from one local school who are planning a primary school competition. Killarney Community College has decided to bring a little bit of joy and normality back into the lives of the pupils by organising a pumpkin decorating competition for all Fifth and Sixth class children in the town. “Our pumpkin decorating house competition has always been a great source of excitement in our school," Principal, Stella Loughnane, an art teacher herself, told the Killarney Advertiser. "The current global pandemic has brought a host of rules and regulations into all our schools with many events being cancelled. Hallowe'en has always been a fun event where kids look
forward to dressing up, decorating their house and generally being artistic. We feel this competition is a perfect opportunity for primary school pupils and classes to get creative and celebrate Hallowe'en in a fun and safe way.” Fifth and Sixth class pupils can carve, paint or decorate their pumpkins any way they wish to do so and then simply upload a photo with their name, school and class alongside their decorated pumpkin to competitions@ killarneycc.ie. This year’s competition will be judged by some well-known faces in the town in the form of Councillor Niall ‘Botty’ O'Callaghan, East Kerry GAA Development Officer Vince Cooper, and local photographer Marie Carroll O'Sullivan from the Little Memory Gallery. Pictures of pupil’s entries will be posted on the school's Face-

Killarney ‘Cleaner than European Norms’ in IBAL report for 2020
Killarney has once again cleaned up in the Irish Business Against Litter (IBAL) report which was just released as it was once again named ‘Cleaner than European Norms’. | By Michelle Crean However, Killarney was edged out of the top spot by Kilkenny and Athlone - but was awarded third in the ranking of 40 towns and cities nationwide. The first nationwide litter survey by business group Irish Business Against Litter (IBAL) since the COVID-19 crisis shows Tralee deemed ‘clean’ in 15th position. There was a dramatic fall in the number of towns and cities deemed to be ‘clean’, to its lowest level since 2007. Kilkenny was again judged best of the surveyed, with ‘seriously littered’ Dublin North Inner City at the foot of the table. The survey showed PPE litter to be widespread and a rise in the prevalence of cans and glass bottles.
regard to litter but a very freshly presented environment.’ "We're absolutely delighted to be rated third," Yvonne Quill from Killarney TidyTowns told the Killarney Advertiser. "It's a great honour." She said that this year has been hard on everyone but they have continued to work hard despite the challenges. "There are fantastic volunteers there. It's hard for everyone but I'd like to say a big thank you to everyone especially the Council workers, they have been superb." Cathaoirleach Councillor Brendan Cronin welcomed the announcement from the Irish Business Against Litter of Killarney’s standing in third position ‘Cleaner than European Norms’ in the latest survey.
‘In such a difficult year for the town, Killarney has maintained its exemplary cleanliness,’ the Taisce report for Killarney stated.
“The last six months has been challenging for everybody but it is good to see Killarney maintain such a high standing,” he told the Killarney Advertiser.
‘All the approach roads got the top litter grade and this high standard was sustained for well over the majority of the remaining sites surveyed. Among many top ranking sites, some deserve special mention – the Jarvey Parking & Environs was spotless throughout and beautifully presented and maintained; Killarney National Park is a wonderful natural resource which has been lovingly tended and very well respected. Main Street was another site which wasn’t just good with
“I would like to congratulate our Municipal District staff and the volunteers who work tirelessly to keep our town looking so well. There is a great sense of community in Killarney and it is thanks to the co-operation and the coming together of so many different groups that the town has achieved this result. We have been faced with new challenges with face masks and gloves being an all too common sight on our streets and roads but we must continue to strive to keep our
town and surrounding areas litter free.”
THE NATIONAL PICTURE
IBAL’s Conor Horgan added that nationally "the rise in litter levels this year is across the board”. “The COVID crisis has seen more dumping, more outdoor socialising, especially drinking, and PPE litter, but less cleaning by local authorities and less activity by volunteers like TidyTowns - a perfect storm, in many ways, which has brought us to the worst position we’ve been in in over 10 years.” In the fight against COVID-19, local authorities have curtailed cleaning schedules and diverted resources to other areas. At the same time, households have been generating more litter during lockdown and there has been a visible increase in drinking outdoors as pubs are closed, a fact borne out by the rise in bottles and cans found by the An Taisce inspectors, Galway City being one example. However, there was a reduction in cigarette butts, perhaps also a reflection of pubs and offices being closed. Half of all recycle facilities surveyed were heavily littered, another likely consequence of the COVID crisis, he explained. PPE litter was prevalent across the country, with masks five times as common as gloves. “Understandably, people are reluctant to pick up these items for fear of contracting COVID, so they tend to stay on the ground. We need to see a rapid rise in the use of reusable masks,” he said.
Liebherr Container Cranes is within its rights to force employees to take holidays next month according to a trade union source. Staff at the Fossa plant were written to in the last few weeks requesting them to take annual leave in October. The crane manufacturing plant is Killarney’s biggest employer. Around 800 people work at its Fossa factory. The local plant has been in operation since 1958 and supplies shipping cranes to sea ports all over the world. Staff were informed by letter that they will have to take four days annual leave between Tuesday October 27 and Friday October 30. The Monday of that week is a Bank Holiday so, effectively, the plant will shut down for one week. The move has been mooted since mid-September. An additional extended Christmas shutdown is also on the cards, the Killarney Advertiser understands. A SIPTU trade union official said the company was within its rights to decide holiday time. “Our members may not be happy, but once a company complies with the Organisation of Working Time Act, and adheres to its provisions, they have done nothing wrong,” the SIPTU spokesperson told the Killarney Advertiser.
TEMPORARY CLOSURE: The Liebherr Container Crane factory in Fossa is to close for one week later this month.

Contingency plans in place for Kerry Fire Service Contingency plans are in place for Kerry Fire Service across the county - including Killarney - should staff have a positive COVID test.
| By Sean Moriarty
Kerry County Council issued a statement this week following what's understood to be a positive COVID test in a fire station in North Kerry. The Council said that they will not be
commenting on any specific section or area of their staffing to "protect the confidentiality and right to privacy of staff and their families at this time". "Kerry County Council has a strict policy of not commenting publicly on individual staffing matters, especially where mat-
16.10.2020 ters regarding the health and welfare of staff is concerned," the statement read. "Since the start of this public health emergency, Kerry County Council, like all public service bodies providing frontline and essential services, has continued to deliver public services. During this time, various policies and procedures giving effect to continually changing public health advice have been in place. In addition, Kerry County Council has detailed contingency arrangements in place across all of its services to ensure continuity of services if and when there may be an impact on staffing arising from the current pandemic." They said that "since the commencement of the pandemic, there have been suspected cases, incidents of self-isolation, restricting of movements, and close contacts, along with a number of confirmed cases". "As cases have increased across society
and with increased community transmission across the county, Council staff are similarly impacted and we have seen increased incidents across all of these categories. All Government, HSE and Public Health Guidelines and Advice and Health & Safety protocols continue to be observed and in place in response to cases or suspected cases among employees as we continue to provide the range of local Government services. The Council will not be commenting on any specific section or area of our staffing to protect the confidentiality and right to privacy of staff and their families at this time. Kerry County Council and Kerry Fire Service is satisfied that there is sufficient staff cover at all fire stations across the county at present and that, as with all Council services, detailed contingency plans are in place to provide for any impacts of the current pandemic."
Road safety a priority for preschoolers! | By Sean Moriarty Within the surreal year of 2020, the children of Scallywags Preschool are keeping the normality going as they learned to stay safe during Road Safety Week. From making their own upcycled cars from cardboard boxes, to stacking tyres and crossing roads, another bunch of Scallywags are safe and seen. "We have been practicing road safety and Beep Beep Day for 10 years now," Patricia Quigley from Scallywags Preschool told the Killarney Advertiser. "It's important for young children to understand that just by 'Stop, Look, Listen', and holding hands that they have the ability to aid their own safety. Being rural, the children learn through actually being taken on the road with no footpaths and how to be attentive to what is happening around them. But the highlight is often when a passing motorist gives an encouraging hoot of the horn, especially if they are driving a big truck!" Throughout the years, past parents love to see the preschool continuing the hands-on skills their own children learnt in Scallywags, she added. "Wearing a helmet when on anything with wheels is another message that is part of our road safety and we practice that in our outdoor area. We relate the whole week to learning through play, with the children painting their own zebra crossing, making their own mini traffic lights, and upcycling some cardboard boxes into cars. There were a lot of shouts of "stop" and "go" all at the same time, and very, very young recruits of the guards directing traffic, but it all flowed better than a Bank Holiday in Killarney!"

Celtic experience best season in club's history All that glitters might not usually be gold - but the silverware currently on display at Celtic Park in Ballydribeen certainly reflects a truly golden season in the proud 44-year history of Killarney Celtic Football Club. In what has been the most successful season in the club's history – which has just drawn to a close - in terms of dream achievements, it just couldn’t have got any bigger or better for the club at all levels with a haul of trophies and successes that was totally unprecedented in Kerry soccer. Leading by example, the senior team won the Premier A Championship and the Greyhound Bar KO Cup double for an incredible third year in a row, once again proving absolutely invincible under the direction of astute manager Brian Spillane. In addition to that remarkable achievement, Celtic clinched the Munster Champions League – having competed against
some of the top sides in the province – and in a novel all-Celtic final, the club’s A team overcame the challenge of the B team in the Celsius Menswear Cup decider. And it didn’t end there. Having won the Jimmy Falvey Memorial Cup and the keenly contested Denny Youths League in convincing fashion, the club’s swashbuckling youths team created their own wonderful chapter in the annals of Kerry and Irish soccer when they registered a dramatic FAI Youth Cup final victory over fancied Cork side Douglas Hall in a tension-filled penalty shootout. This season will be remembered as the greatest ever in the history of Killarney Celtic with so many triumphs to celebrate, so many cups to hold aloft and so many achievements to be proud of. Progressive club chairman, Paul Sherry, said the success story is due mainly to the priority given to the underage policy over the years with several hundred players, in all age groups, turning up for training. “There is great dedication shown by
everybody involved in the club, from the officials, the coaches, the backroom teams, the parents and, of course, the players and the enthusiasm shown week in and week out is just infectious,” he said. “We have just completed a remarkably successful season and that is to be celebrated but we remain hugely ambitious and we still harbour a great desire to win the elusive FAI Junior Cup after coming so close in recent seasons,” Paul added.
HISTORY
Amusing as it might seem now, the Celtic story started at a Wolfe Tones concert with the seeds for the birth of a new soccer club in Killarney sown to strains of ‘A Nation Once Again’ in a packed Gleneagle Hotel ballroom. Pals Mikey Daly, from O’Connell’s Terrace, and Billy Healy, of Dalton’s Avenue, were enjoying a night on the town 44 years ago when the talk turned to the beautiful game. “Billy was playing with Pretty Polly and I was with the Franciscan Youth Club and
we decided over a few pints that we’d form a club,” Mikey, later recalled. A common belief that the fledging club took its name and its colours from Glasgow Celtic are well wide of the mark, however. “Killarney already had an Athletic and a Rangers so Celtic was the first name that came to mind,” Mikey said. The first set of jerseys weren’t green and white hoops either, rather a fetching shade of yellow. “We bought them in Jimmy O’Brien’s sports shop for 33 punts. We went for yellow simply because it was all he had,” Mikey said. Renting playing space in local fields for years, Celtic eventually acquired its own base and Celtic Park is now one of the finest grounds in the south west, befitting of the most successful club in Kerry soccer. And such is the progress that is being made, it’s safe to assume that the best has yet to come.

"Seamus poured his heart and soul into Muckross Rowing Club"
SADNESS: There was great sadness at the news of the death of the President of Muckross Rowing Club, Seamus Guiney, this week. Photo: Valerie O'Sullivan
A great sense of sadness was felt widely this week when news of the passing of one of the most decorated cox and trainer in the 234-year history of Killarney Regatta became known. | By Michelle Crean Seamus Guiney of Marian Terrace and Woodlawn Road, Killarney, who was aged 87, died on Monday peacefully in the tender care of the management and staff of Killarney Community Hospital. Seamus had rowed primarily in the bow of various Workmen crews including at the last regattas held at Cahernane in 1954 and 1955. With his shrewd eye, sharp intellect and love of the lake, he migrated from the bow to the cox seat and there a legend was born, whether with Workmen to his involvement with the Commercial Senior Six bid in 1980, to his eventual decision to commit to the mid-1980s effort by Muckross to regain the Men's Senior Six. The ‘holy grail’ of a Men's Senior Six title continued to elude him throughout the late 1980s but he finally crossed that line in 1993 with Muckross closing a 20-year wait for the club by bringing home the Bourn Vincent trophy. Since that win, Muckross crews have gone on to largely dominate proceedings at Killarney Regatta – by dint of hard work by many but always with the knowledge that Seamus would take each ‘A’ crew in the weeks before the regatta, produce his unique stopwatch, bring them up to speed and ultimately predict the likelihood of victory on the first Sunday of July. A gentleman to his fingertips on dry land – with a steer rope in his hand and a crew at his bidding, he became a different creature. Driven, sharp and a tech-
nical genius in the Killarney Six, Seamus had a unique ability to make a crew gel together. Many rowers past and present will hold the memory of Seamus guiding a crew in training from a standing position with only his steer rope for balance. Sean Coffey, Club Coach and Tim O’Shea, PRO, Muckross RC, reflect on the immense contribution of Seamus to Muckross RC and rowing in Killarney. "It is with the greatest sadness that the members of Muckross Rowing Club learned on Monday of the passing of our Club President, Seamus Guiney," Tim said.
SETTING RECORDS
Seamus undoubtedly remains the most decorated cox and trainer in the 234year history of Killarney Regatta, he added. "In casting an eye over the record books, it remains close to impossible to state with accuracy just how many crews Seamus saw across the line to victory." His win tally with Muckross became simply countless across four decades from the 1980s through to 2018. Between 1993 and 2013, Seamus coxed 11 Muckross crews to victory in the Men’s Senior Six. Between 1994 and 2014, 16 Senior Ladies Sixes titles were won by Muckross, with Seamus thought to have coxed almost all. In the Four Oar races, 10 Senior Men's titles, between 1990 and 2013, and 17 Senior Women's titles from 1994 to 2014 involved Seamus at least in training, if not on race day. "At all grades, Seamus set and broke records time and again. Whether it was Junior or Juvenile, Minor or Veteran,
Seamus brought a boundless energy and commitment to the rowers of Muckross both young and old, with silverware resulting more often than not. His rowing prowess was not only confined to the lakes of Killarney and extended to regattas and time trials around Ireland. Among the memorable trips with the club was the Great River Race in London, where Seamus skilfully navigated the 22-mile Thames River course - manoeuvring the Killarney Six with aplomb underneath Tower Bridge and past the Houses of Parliament." Sean Coffey, who raced with Seamus as part of the victorious Senior crew of 1993 and Veteran crew of 2018, recalls his earlier days. "His long involvement with the club goes back to the Killarney Regatta season of 1984. With his arrival in Muckross at that time came a storied past in the intensely competitive world of Killarney rowing. "He was most proud of having an Olympic style sweep Four named in his honour – a much loved man made immortal on the bow of a race boat. After the passing of James Mulligan, Seamus was unanimously chosen as Club President of Muckross RC. He took great pride in the success of the club, watching Muckross crews compete at various regattas, Head of the River events and the Irish Championships. Much of this success was made possible due to Seamus’ tireless efforts in coaching and developing crews. He gave his all to the improvement of whatever six men, women or
teenagers he happened to have out on the lake." He coxed his final winning crew, fittingly a Men's Veteran Six, at the age of 85 in 2018. "Once more Seamus brought his crew out in time, hit the start, made the calls and brought his boat home straight and safe in a manner which belied his years", said Sean. Lough Leane was a truly special environment for Seamus, who spent many happy hours fishing when he wasn’t cycling to and from the Muckross boathouse. He is one of the last anglers to have fished from the traditional whalers, used on the Killarney lakes for centuries. Away from the lake shore, Seamus worked for many years in the former Hilliard’s Factory Tuf Shoes off High Street making many friends throughout his working life. He was also well-known for his musical skills playing the guitar and trumpet. In his younger days, Seamus featured in local bands including the Keynotes and the Billy Williams Band, among others. Tim concluded "Seamus poured his heart and soul into Muckross Rowing Club and was central to a golden era of rowing in Muckross and Killarney. We feel the loss of our Club President like the loss of a family member and will greatly miss his enthusiasm, kindness, good humour and friendship. Seamus’ spirit will always remain with us at the Muckross shore, on the lake and wherever the yellow oars of Muckross may row."

Call for extremely dangerous junction to be urgently addressed | By Sean Moriarty A Kerry County Councillor has called on Kerry County Council and the Department of Transport to address as a matter of priority the extremely dangerous Junction at Tullig Beg, Killorglin on the main Killorglin to Cromane road "before someone is killed or seriously injured". Councillor Michael Cahill raised the matter at a recent meeting of the Council where he stated that this junction was one of the most dangerous in the county. Speaking at the recent meeting, the Fianna Fáil Councillor said that the Cromane/ Killorglin road was very busy and serviced a populated area. Large articulated lorries, contracted to bring mussels and oysters to France and Holland, also travel the road on a regular basis, he explained. "I have raised this Death Trap 4 Cross Road Junction on numerous occasions over the years and I am now pleading with you to address the situation before someone is seriously injured or a life is lost," Cllr Councillor told the Council meeting. "I am aware of numerous accidents having occurred at this location over the years and this is a major health and safety issue that requires immediate attention." Senior Roads Engineer Padraic Teahan gave the following response at the meeting.
DANGEROUS JUNCTION: Cllr Michael Cahill is calling for urgent works to be carried out at a dangerous junction in Killorglin.
"Improvement works at the junction of the L4033 and the L7506 local roads at Tulligbeg may be considered for funding under the Department of Transport’s Safety Improvement Works Grant for Regional and Local roads. This grant is primarily targeted at locations on the public road network that have a history of road traffic accidents. Therefore, data on the Road Safety Authority’s website indicating that there have been minor, serious or fatal accidents recorded on this section of Local Primary Road would be required to support an application to the Department for funding." Following Councillor Cahill's proposal, it was agreed to make an application to the Department of Transport under the Safety Improvement Works Scheme for Regional and Local roads.

read Ghosts By Dolly Alderton The bestselling author of 'Everything I Know About Love', a memoir of her 20s, makes her fiction debut with the story of Nina, a food writer in her early 30s, which have not been the liberating, uncomplicated experience she was sold. When she meets Max, a beguiling romantic hero who tells her on date one that he’s going to marry her, it feels like all is going to plan. A new relationship couldn't have come at a better time. Everywhere she turns, she is reminded of time passing and opportunities dwindling. Friendships are fading, ex-boyfriends are moving on and, worse, everyone's moving to the suburbs. There's no solace to be found in her family, with a mum who's caught in a baffling midlife makeover and a beloved dad who is vanishing in slow-motion into dementia. Dolly Alderton's debut novel is funny and tender, filled with whip-smart observations about relationships, family, memory, and how we live now. Dolly Alderton is an award-winning
journalist. She has a column in the Sunday Times and has written for publications including the Daily Telegraph, GQ, Marie Claire, Red and Grazia. She is the co-host of ‘The High Low’, a weekly pop culture and current affairs podcast, and also writes for television.

GARDEN MAGIC

Plant indoor bulbs now in time for Christmas We are already seeing Christmas in many shops and it seems that many people, myself included, are preparing early amidst all the uncertainties. My preparations involve planting indoor bulbs in order to have them flowering for Christmas. Timing is everything when it comes to these flowers, and there is a bit of a countdown involved! One of my favourites are Amaryllis, properly known as Hippeastrum. They are tall, striking, red or white lily type flowers we all associate with Christmas. For many years I bought them as cut flowers, but now prefer to grow the bulbs. They will be available from the end of October onwards, as they must be planted between five and eight weeks before they are needed, which is usually, but not necessarily, Christmas. When you go to buy the bulbs, size is everything. Unfortunately the larger the bulb the higher the cost, but if you buy cheaper smaller bulbs the flowers will also be smaller and weaker. A decent sized bulb should be about 15cm in diameter. Place it in an adequately sized container – there should be about 5cm between the edge of the pot and the bulb. Fill the pot with multipurpose compost, leaving the neck and shoulders of the bulb above the soil. Place in a bright spot away from heat and direct sunlight. Water moderately until growth starts and then start feeding with a liquid feed such as Baby Bio every second week. By Christmas it should be in full bloom. When the flower fades, stop feeding and give it less water until the foliage has turned yellow. Then stop watering altogether as it goes dormant. The bulb can remain in the same pot for about three years at which point it should need a larger pot. Hyacinth are also great for show as well
as scent. Always buy ‘prepared' bulbs, as only these are suitable for growing indoors. Gloves are recommended as hyacinth bulbs can cause skin irritation. Plant in free draining compost or preferably bulb fibre if you can get it. As with all bulbs used for indoor display they can be planted close together but not touching each other or the sides of the pot. Ensure the top of the bulb is just visible. Keep hyacinth in a cool dark place such as a garage for about 10 weeks to allow root formation. At this point a shoot should also have grown. Place the pot in a bright spot indoors, and about four weeks on they should be flowering. Other bulbs, such as grape hyacinths (muscari), dwarf daffodils, Paperwhites, crocus and snowdrops can also be used for an indoor display. As with the hyacinths, these bulbs need 10 weeks of cold, dark conditions which mimics nature to trigger root growth and subsequent flowers. Using old teacups, teapots, soup bowls and even gravy boats can be an attractive way of displaying indoor or outdoor arrangements. Line glass jars or vases with moss – the nice side facing out - before filling with compost is another way to create a cost effective yet pretty pot. Tie a festive ribbon around it and you have a lovely gift. Remember that press full of old, mismatched and unwanted Christmas crockery? Well, plant them up – they will make great gifts too!
WEBINAR: Martina O'Donoghue from Barraduff, pictured in Borena, Ethiopia with Trocaire, will take part in the Diocese of Kerry webinar next week.
Diocese webinar to feature two locals | By Michelle Crean The Diocese of Kerry is to host a 'Solidarity in Mission' webinar featuring two locals on Thursday next, October 22. It's all part of Mission Month and takes place from 7.30pm - 8.20pm. It'll be an opportunity to meet different people involved in mission here at home and abroad. During the webinar there will be short inputs from three modern missionaries followed by the opportunity to ask questions and share ideas about how 'Together We Can Do More'. This conversation is being organised by the Returned Missionary/Volunteer group in conjunction with the Justice, Peace and Integrity of Creation (JPIC) Committee (Diocese of Kerry). Speakers on the night will include Martina O' Donoghue originally from Barraduff who has a BA in History and Politics and a MA in International Relations. Martina has worked for Trócaire and her sister agencies CRS, CAFOD, SCIAF for almost 20 years. She has worked in Angola, Kenya, Ethiopia, and Uganda and returned to Ireland in 2020. Currently she is the Global Monitoring, Evaluation, Accountability and Learning Advisor for Trócaire. Martina is married to Wubeshet and they have two children, Tadgh (13) and Seán (11). It'll also feature Fr Peter Hughes originally from Co Mayo now the coordinator of human rights and territorial rights for REPAM, a Catholic Church network that promotes the lives and dignity of people living in the Amazon. Eddie Sheehy, will also take part. Eddie first travelled to Kenya in 2003 and stayed in the village of Embulbul, outside the capital, Nairobi. The parish there
was run by SMA society and was a new vibrant parish which contained a slum village where approx 5,000 lived in very challenging circumstances. A school was opened for the young children of the area, which wasn’t a Government school, so obtaining funds to run it was always an issue. A year later a secondary school was opened which depended on donors and sponsorships to provide an education for the children of the slum. The Kenya Education project began fundraising to help sponsor children each year to attend school. It also helped with the purchase of equipment for science, sports and the school library. At present the project is sponsoring between 80-100 students each year. They also support the local branch of SVdP who work with the poorest of the poor in the slums, providing funding for medicines, food, hospital visits and home improvements. In recent years they also fund a weekly feeding programme in the parish with 80 students receiving a hot meal each weekday evening. For many it is their only hot meal of the day. Each year they also fund the further education of a few students who are determined to pursue further education. An annual summer camp is also organised each August for approx 30 students, a week of fun, games, activities and outings for kids who live in tough conditions in the village. Due to COVID, the schools are closed so the Kenya Education Project are funding monthly food parcels for 50 families who are struggling to put food on the table for their families. They hope to resume their core work in 2021. For more information on the webinar please email desbailey@dioceseofkerry.ie or phone 064 6632644.

Tralee streets to get €3.4m upgrade The next phase of the multi-million-euro investment in the upgrading of Tralee town centre is to commence early next month. €3.4m is to be invested in a major upgrade and enhancement of Russell Street and Bridge Street which will see a continuation of the shared space and new public realm at the Mall. The project is part of a €10m enhancement of Tralee town centre. Funded by Kerry County Council and the Department of Housing, Planning and Local Government through the Urban Regeneration and Development Fund (URDF), the Tralee Pavements Phase II – ‘Russell Street and Bridge Street’ project will build on the success of Phase I – ‘The Mall’ which involved the development of pedestrian priority ‘shared space’ enabling pedestrians to move more freely while reducing the priority of vehicles. Phase II will see a similar shared space developed along Russell Street and Bridge Street. Construction work is set to begin on the project in early November and is scheduled to last approximately 12 months, but the work will take place in different phases, during different periods of street closures, and with every effort being made to minimise disruption for businesses and

Local diversions will be in place "I am really pleased to see the commencement of works at Russell Street and Bridge Street which will greatly complement the major investment in the upgrading of The Mall," Mayor of Tralee, Cllr Terry O’Brien said. "Now, more than ever, it is vital that we continue to invest in our town centre for the benefit of local business, customers and visitors to our town.
This is very significant investment in the town at a time when local businesses and the local economy need every possible support." Kerry County Council will provide updates on the various phases of the project as it proceeds, and an engineer will be on site to liaise with local businesses on an ongoing basis. Local business owners are being briefed on the project and will be updated as it progresses.
Trump and Biden fight it out for the older votes As 74-year-old President Trump and 77-year-old Joe Biden continue their war to gain voters from the older demographic, the fight went to a whole other level this week. Trump continues to lose the older demographic of voters - a group which helped him gain his first successful presidency in 2016. Joe Biden sought to capitalise on this trend, and travelled to a senior
centre in Florida on Tuesday to argue that Trump has neglected older Americans. “You’re expendable. You’re forgettable. You’re virtually nobody. That’s how he sees seniors,” Biden told the crowd. “The only senior that Donald Trump cares about — the only senior — is the senior Donald Trump.” In retaliation, Trump - who is the
Passenger gives birth on India flight There was a surprise arrival on a flight to India on Wednesday night as a passenger unexpected gave birth. The baby boy cried mid-air following the premature labour on the IndiGo flight from Delhi to Bengaluru. In a statement, the airline confirmed the new arrival was a baby boy while the crew were praised for their "amazing team work" after being assisted by a senior gynaecologist who luckily was on the flight. "Was on @IndiGo6E 6E 122 flight to BLR, woman gives birth mid-indiair, amazing team work of indigo flight attendants," tweeted fellow passenger Prabhu Stavarmath. "They setup a hospital in minutes and the new born cried mid-air. Dr Shailaja Vallabhani was fortunately on this flight! Thank you God and entire @ IndiGo6E crew." Social media photos showed staff on the ground and airline employees seen applauding and welcoming the woman and her baby as she left the aircraft. Farmers to address climate change through technology Dingle Creativity and Innovation Hub has been awarded €220,000 EU Horizon 2020 funding to enable West Kerry to participate as a Sustainable Innovation Pilot (SIP) for the next three years.
President congratulates Nobel Peace Prize awardees President Michael D. Higgins has this week conveyed his congratulations to the World Food Programme (WFP) on being awarded the 2020 Nobel Peace Prize. The World Food Programme is the world’s largest humanitarian organisation addressing hunger and promoting food security. In 2019, the WFP provided assistance to close to 100 million people in 88 countries who are victims of acute food insecurity and hunger. "On behalf of the people of Ireland I wish to congratulate the staff and leadership of the World Food Programme on being awarded the Nobel Peace Prize 2020." The Nobel Committee, in awarding the Nobel Peace Prize to the United Nations’ food agency, the World Food Programme, highlighted the organisation’s efforts to combat hunger and its contribution to prevent the use of hunger as a weapon of war and conflict. It is such a good decision and will be welcomed not only by Irish people but by all those all over the world who are working to end the scandal of world hunger." In its statement, the Nobel Committee paid tribute to the World Food Pro-
gramme for its “impressive ability to intensify its efforts” in the circumstances of COVID-19. The World Food Programme itself has stated that “until the day we have a medical vaccine, food is the best vaccine against chaos”. Globally, leaders and members of the United Nations have been alerted to the fact that, as the Nobel Committee pointed out in its statement announcing the decision to give the Nobel Peace Prize to the World Food Programme, that “the world is in danger of experiencing a hunger crisis of inconceivable proportions if the World Food Programme and other food assistance organisations do not receive the financial support they have requested. In 2015, eradicating hunger was adopted as one of the UN’s Sustainable Development Goals as number two of the 17 Sustainable Development Goals. "I so welcome the Nobel Committee’s decision to award the prize to the WFP, and its acknowledgement of the achievements of the WFP and its highlighting of the continued importance of international strategies to eradicate global hunger and under-nutrition."
This will see the roll-out of sensor technology to 30 farms to achieve greater carbon, cost and labour efficiency. Increased carbon efficiency will be achieved by extending the grazing season. Starting this October, the Dingle Hub will collaborate with Teagasc, IFA, local Dingle hub-based technology provider Net Feasa and Kerry Agribusiness to roll-out the sensor technology currently being piloted through the Farm Ambassador Project to a further 30 farms on the peninsula. The ‘real-time’ data collected describes current and predicted weather and soil conditions, grass growth rates and key environmental indicators. This data will be analysed and used to develop models and effective decision-support tools for farmers and to add value to a range of products and services, e.g. using good environmental
parameters in marketing goods from the area; localised ‘real-time’ weather data enabling providers to tailor tourist packages optimised for changing weather conditions; building a trusted brand for the Dingle Peninsula to secure the region as a destination of choice for the sustainably conscious visitor supported by data proving low food miles and low carbon footprint. This SIP will integrate farming enterprises with related value chains, such as agri-tourism and/or food tourism, through enabling farmers to work with technology providers, data analysts and marketing teams. It is hoped that facilitating collaborations across the value chain will support and enable co-created, innovative solutions to both address climate change and support the financial viability of farms. The Dingle Hub will be advertising Expressions of Interest in the coming months for members of the farming community who wish to get involved in the SIP. Those who wish to pre-register their interest can do so by emailing info@dinglehub.com.

€1m fund awarded to two National Cultural Institutions The Minister for Tourism, Culture, Arts, Gaeltacht, Sport and Media, Catherine Martin TD, has announced that significant funding of €1 million has been approved for two National Cultural Institutions, the Irish Museum of Modern Art and the Crawford Art Gallery.
The funding will enable the acquisition of artworks to support Irish artists in these very difficult and challenging times. The Irish Museum of Modern Art is home to the National Collection of modern and contemporary art, while the Crawford Art Gallery is dedicated to the visual arts, both historic and contemporary.
This additional funding of €600,000 for the Irish Museum of Modern Art and €400,000 for the Crawford Art Gallery will allow both museums to expand the National Collection by acquiring works by Irish artists who need vital support at this time. “I am delighted to announce this very significant funding for the two National Cultural Institutions, the Crawford Art
Gallery and the Irish Museum of Modern Art," Minister Martin said. "Arts and culture are a core part of who we are. They have been the source of so much support over the last few months. I am pleased to be able to make this allocation to enhance the national collection. By doing so, this will provide vital support to our Irish artists during this unprecedented time.”

The importance of using night creams A gentle massage on the face with your favourite night cream before bedtime is a perfect way to end your day's beauty regime. Our skin has to put up with so much stress and pollution throughout the day so it’s important to rejuvenate it as the day draws to a close. Skin starts to loss its elasticity over time and to retain firmness you will need to treat your skin. Night creams work while you sleep; they nourish, replenish and clarify your skin. And the skin's power of absorption increases at night when you're asleep. It’s so important to wear a good night cream, it can be like a mini facial while sleeping especially if you take the time to cleanse and tone correctly and exfoliate one or two times a week. It helps to smooth out wrinkles and gives a glow to the skin when you wake up. Night creams have ingredients such as collagen, vitamins and amino acids to help stimulate cell growth. Your skin will feel hydrated and soft with an amazing glow. It can help with uneven complex-
ion and soften wrinkles. The appearance of fine lines, wrinkles and other signs of ageing can be postponed if the right kind of night cream is used with the proper skincare regime made to complement it. Night creams get a chance to fight the free radicals that are so damaging on the skin. Our award winning Sothys detoxifying resurfacing overnight cream is a beautifully fresh formulation with mandarin essence to suit all skin types. Sothys resurfacing night cream contains a high potency of vitamin C to increase skin luminosity, oxygenation and collagen production while managing skin with hyper-pigmentation issues. Alpha Hydroxy Acid (AHA) helps resurface the skin while sleeping, and it's very important to only use this at night as it's a very reactive ingredient in the sun. Night after night this concentration of technology with the pleasant fragrance acts deep inside the skin to help it ease the visible signs of daytime damage caused by the environment.

Kerry Mental Health Association appoints John Drummey as General Manager | By Sean Moriarty Kerry Mental Health Association has announced the appointment of John Drummey as General Manager. John joins the organisation at a time of great stress for the population of Kerry, when the befriending activities of Kerry Mental Health Association volunteers are much in demand. He will bring vitality and innovation to the work of their nine branches. “I am looking forward to working with the Board of Directors and volunteers involved in Kerry Mental Health Association," John Drummey said. "I’m mindful of the challenges facing everyone in the midst of the COVID-19 pandemic and the impact that the virus and the restrictions have had on our mental health. In rebranding and revitalising the organisation, I intend to remind people who we are and what we can do. Kerry Mental Health Association needs to be the most instantly recognisable source of information and support while leading the way to remove the stigmas associated with mental illness.” The Chairman of Kerry Mental Health Association, Pat O’Brien, added they they are delighted to welcome John Drummey on board as their first General Manager. "It’s timely that we should announce
the appointment during Kerry Mental Health and Well-being Week when there is so much attention on the 'Five Ways to Well-being'. DEVELOPING GROWTH This is a first-time appointment aimed at developing the growth and expansion of Kerry Mental Health Association through the recruitment and empowerment of volunteers and the management of fundraising activities. The nine branches which make up Kerry Mental Health Association pursue befriending and support activities to enrich the lives of neighbours and friends who are living with mental illness. Established in 1966, Kerry Mental Health Association is an Approved Housing Body with nine residences in Tralee, Killarney, Listowel, Killorglin, Rathmore and Caherciveen providing housing for people living with mental ill-health who are on the county council housing list. What’s your return on investment? With the current focus on public health brightly at the forefront of everyone’s minds, I’ve had more than a few conversations with various people lately regarding their focus. From my perspective, it seemed that before we were shaken up by lockdowns, many of us lived life on autopilot. The economy was doing OK and getting back on its feet since the crash in 2008. Many were focused on family, careers, health, fitness, and many other worthy goals. Those of us who attended larger events, or even places like the gym or our workplaces simply saw these things as normal - and, might I add, likely never saw a possibility of change coming. All of this changed seemingly overnight. While we could certainly debate lockdowns until the cows come home, I stay in my lane and don’t talk about things I’m not qualified to speak about, we can however all agree things changed at a blistering, unexpected, and unsettling pace for all of us. For a time, it felt like we were all on a roller coaster that just blew through the loading point and never gave us the opportunity to get off. Down the next dizzying spiral we went. At that point, many of us really had a “what have I been doing with my life?” moment. I know that I absolutely did. When everything comes off the rails, to use the roller coaster metaphor, we get the opportunity to take an objective look at our lives, our pursuits, relationships
and goals. What we find might not be something we want to confront, but in every case, it brings the fragility of our lives into view. And, it brings every detail of life into focus quicker than the blink of an eye. As the roller coaster continued, it was amazing to me how many things lost value, things that, frankly, needed to. I realised how much time I loved spending with my family and just how precious every minute is. I also realised how much I enjoyed working with people to help them change their lives – physically and mentally. I love seeing people accomplish what they set their minds to, and what is put in front of them to accomplish or overcome. I also love knowing that there are things we can do that will last beyond today. In this, I realised simplifying my life and responsibilities to focus on the things that matter is now my foremost purpose. We need to pour petrol on the areas in which we can make the biggest difference for others and ourselves, and we need to, for lack of a better metaphor, let the excess burn away. We need to challenge ourselves to regularly assess where we spend the small amount of time we’re given and what our “return on investment” is. If anything positive came out of COVID, it’s this realisation: we only have so much time. We need to use it as if we can’t get it back… because as much as we like to avoid it, the fact is, our time is getting shorter every day. Use it wisely.
Priority must be given to Kerry water projects Deputy Michael Healy-Rae has called on the Government to prioritise Kerry Irish Water projects after the Minister for Public Expenditure and Reform Michael McGrath announced a €44m funding scheme to Irish Water. “I am delighted that the Government have seen sense and found money to speed up some current Irish Water projects that are currently on hold or even delayed, but this money must find its way back to Kerry projects that have
been delayed for years,” Deputy Michael Healy-Rae said. “I would hope that projects like the Kenmare Waste Water Treatment Plant, Kilcummin Waste Water Scheme and the Ardfert South Water Rationalisation Programme, which are in the design and planning phase can be sped up with this funding that has been announced. Kerry has spent long enough at the back of the queue and I hope that their long wait can be ended with this funding. ”
Credit Unions welcome reduction in levies The Irish League of Credit Unions (ILCU) has welcomed the announcement by the Minister for Finance of a reduction in two substantial levies paid by credit unions – the Credit Institution Resolution Levy (CIRF) and the Credit Union Stabilisation Levy. The announced reductions follow on from extensive lobbying by the ILCU over several years including lobbying intensively in the recent General Election. One of its lobbying aims was to highlight the financial impact these levies are having on not for profit credit unions whose sole function is to serve the financial needs of members in their communities. The ILCU further outlined the impact of these levies in its document ‘The Movement’ published in July, and in letters to the Minister for Finance. “Last year, the ILCU was successful in achieving a 44% decrease in the CIRF levy on behalf of its member credit unions," ILCU CEO Ed Farrell said.
"The further decrease in the CIRF levy announced, approximately €250,000, means credit unions will pay €4.4m in 2021, compared to €8.6m they paid in 2019, an overall reduction of €4.2m. In relation to the Credit Union Stabilisation Levy, the announced reduction by the Minister means credit unions will pay €2.7m less in 2021 than they paid in 2020. Instead of having to pay €3m next year, they will only pay €300,000. This is a significant cost saving for credit unions which will go some way to alleviating the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on credit union balance sheets. We are delighted that our campaigning for our member credit unions has delivered and we look forward to continuing to work with both Minister Donohoe and Minister Fleming and the Department of Finance on the review of the Policy Framework for Credit Unions announced in the Programme for Government.”

Release date for Michael Fassbender’s documentary Michael Fassbender will release the first episode of Series Two of his ‘Road to Le Mans’ online documentary on October 23. The series is charting his progress in the European Le Mans Series as he chased his dream to race in the legendary twice-round the clock French race next June. So far this year the local Hollywood A-lister has contested four rounds of the European Le Mans Championship – a direct feeder series to Le Mans – at the wheel of a Proton Competition Porsche 911 GT. He shares the car with Felipe Laser and former World Endurance Championship LMGTE Pro World Champion Richard Lietz in the endurance races. So far this year he has raced twice at Paul Ricard in France, once at Spa-Francorchamps in Belgium and last weekend he made his Monza, Italy debut. Additionally, he has contested two Porsche Carrera Cup races, one in the Spanish Grand Prix support race in Barcelona and once at the famous Le Mans track itself. “Anyone wanting to get to know the person behind the race driver and the race driver behind the person can see first-hand what it means to have a dream and to fight for it by watching the ‘Road to Le Mans’ documentary series: no stunt doubles and just one prop: a race car. A Porsche,” a Porsche spokesperson said. “When you watch

Michael Fassbender on the track, follow his development and get to know him as a race driver and a person, you understand how conscientious he is. He meticulously seeks solutions and constantly questions himself, while his progress shows the incredible talent that he is able to unleash again and again.” His successes and the failures will form the back bone of latest episode of ‘Road to Le Mans’ which will be broadcast on www.porsche.com/roadtolemans later this month. Last year’s series ran to six episodes and the same is expected this season.

Tesla charges in Killarney on Wild Atlantic Way road trip A Killarney Hotel will feature in a new online documentary on a successful attempt to drive the entire Wild Atlantic Way in an electric car. Dublin-based Oppermann Productions are making a film on their recent trip from Donegal to Cork along the 2,500km long tourist route. Driving a Tesla Model X, the crew were

attempting to find out if there were sufficient electric car change points and related infrastructure along the way and if the experience of driving such a car would differ from a conventional petrol or diesel car. The film crew overnighted at The Europe Hotel and Resort last Wednesday where they were able to use the on-site facilities to charge their car before completing
the next leg of their journey on Thursday morning. “With our four electric vehicle charging points on site, they were able to complete the southern part of their Irish road trip stress free,” a hotel spokesperson said. “The full video is set to be launched in the coming weeks and highlights that the current infrastructure in the West of
Ireland allows anyone to complete a Wild Atlantic Way trip in an electric car.” The Tesla Model X looks very similar to the Model 3 but it is distinguished by its Falcon-style rear doors. Tesla claims it can travel 480 kilometres on a full charge and that it emits zero emissions. That doesn’t stop drivers breathing in diesel fumes from the car in front however. The Model X addresses this by featuring a medical grade cabin filter which removes pollen, bacteria, viruses and pollution from the internal air. According to the most recent Society of the Irish Motor Industry (SIMI) figures three new Model 3s have been sold in Kerry so far this year.

Kerry County Council have advised that Transport Infrastructure Ireland (TII), through their Road Safety Inspections Programme, have identified a number of road safety issues in Glenbeigh Village. These include suggested improvements to public lighting and a new pedestrian crossing facility. Kerry County Council were responding to a Notice of Motion moved by Fianna Fáil Councillor Michael Cahill. The Council also stated that a Feasibility Report, undertaking a full appraisal of road safety issues in Glenbeigh, is being prepared by the Kerry National Roads Office, with a view to securing funding to undertake safety improvement works during 2021. “I am delighted that after representations made by me on behalf of the people of Glenbeigh, TII have recognised that residents of this village, situated on The Ring of Kerry, have genuine safety concerns and that progress will now be made to correct them." ................................................................

Kerry group recognised in European Language Label Awards A Kerry group, who aim to bridge linguistic and cultural gaps by providing an online training course and a smartphone App, are among the winners at the annual European Language Label (ELL) Awards, managed by Léargas, the national agency for Erasmus+ in adult education, school education, vocational education and training services, and the youth sector. VOCAL IN NEED designed the training App and smartphone App for both security and NGO staff to better communicate with refugees and migrants who do not speak English. This project is led in Ireland by IT Tralee in partnership with a consortium of Vocational Education and Training institutions from eight countries. Eli Babei, Léargas Language Initiatives Officer, said that the awards provide opportunities to network, share best practice, and inspire learners on the important role that language plays in society and the professional opportunities available to them.

Plan ahead to get the best out of Virtual Open Days Public health guidelines and COVID restrictions mean that college open days/evenings and information sessions will be virtual for the foreseeable future. Naturally it is disappointing that you can’t visit the college campuses to get a real feel for the physical layout and atmosphere there, but the virtual events give you a great opportunity to find out a lot about the courses that are on offer from the comfort of your own home. By doing some preparation you can ensure that you get the best out of the experience. There are other benefits to the virtual event, namely that you are assured to get into the talks once you have registered unlike the queues to attend subject talks ordinarily which often result in being disappointed because they are full as you race from one talk to another. Start by registering for the event online, once you do so you should get a confirmation email from the university/college with a link inviting you to the event online. Make sure you have downloaded the right App/software for the open day for example Zoom or another system. On the day you may get a calendar alert reminding you of the start time so make sure that you are logged in on time for the welcome talks.
CAMPUS TOUR
All colleges are different in terms of the layout of the online event but they will have a schedule that includes a general welcome talk, course specific talks and information about careers, finance and other information talks such has HEAR and DARE schemes, scholarships, accommodation etc., information from the Students' Union on college life, clubs and societies, student services and so on. All colleges provide a virtual campus tour which sometimes includes a tour of campus accommodation. There will generally also be a Live Chat function to give you the chance to chat directly to admissions and academic staff, as well as current students. You may also have the opportunity to attend specific workshops. To get the best out of the event it helps

to have a thorough look at the courses that you are interested in beforehand on the college website and prepare any questions you have. During the live sessions jot down the contact details for the academic staff so that if your question is not answered you can email them afterwards. Take notes about the key information, this will help you when you are trying to make a decision later on about what to include in your CAO application and in what order you will list the courses. One major benefit of the virtual event is that recordings of the talks are usually made available afterwards on the college websites and social media platforms so you can look back on anything you missed. The next couple of months will see all universities and colleges showcasing what they have to offer virtually so check out their websites for details of registration for each event and search www.qualifax. ie and www.careersportal.ie for a complete list of dates for this academic year. In the coming week virtual open days are scheduled for Trinity College (Law School Open Day) on October 17, Gurteen Agricultural College on October 20, TU Dublin on October 22, IT Tralee on October 23, and NUI Galway on Saturday the 24. See the college websites for further details and get planning!
ONLINE: Niamh Doyle from Kerry County Library Services pictured on screen in a socially distanced classroom at Kerry College’s Clash Road campus.
Kerry College teams up with library for online learning Kerry College of Further Education and Training (Kerry College) virtually welcomed Niamh Doyle of Kerry County Library Services last week as she presented an online tutorial on what the Kerry Library service has to offer. The interactive tutorial was streamed to multiple classes across both the Clash and Denny Street campuses. Kerry College and the Library services are collaborating to ensure students in Kerry have access to a range of learning and research resources, regardless of the level of restrictions imposed during the 2020/21 academic year. Hundreds of students and staff logged in to hear Niamh explain the simple process of registering online as a member of Kerry County Library. She also demonstrated how to use their website to access the extensive range
of e-books, audiobooks, electronic versions of national and international newspapers and magazines and online courses. Popular books, newspapers and magazines Apps such as RBDigital, PressReader and Borrowbox are available to subscribers to the library’s online service. "All services are free to Kerry College students, as they are to all current members of Kerry County Library," John Herlihy from Kerry College said. "It was the first part of an initiative developed by the County Library and Kerry College to mitigate against the impact COVID restrictions could have on learning." You can browse Kerry College’s range of courses online at www.kerrycollege. ie. For Kerry Library Online queries, tel: (066) 7121200 or email info@kerrylibrary.ie
Festival to celebrate Irish Language and culture launched online Kerry Education & Training Board Schools are to participate in ETBI Bliain na Gaeilge 2020/21. Mícheál Ó Muircheartaigh, Bláthnaid Ní Chofaigh, Bláthnaid Treacy and ETB past-pupil Séamus Ó Scanláin launched Education and Training Boards Ireland’s Bliain na Gaeilge 2020/21 this week across 245 ETB post-primary Schools, eight of which are located across Kerry.
The theme of the year-long festival to celebrate Irish language is ‘Ag tabhairt na Gaeilge linn’ – ‘Bringing Irish with us’. “It is wonderful that over 100,000 students will be celebrating our language and our Irish culture during the school year 2020/21," Minister of State for Gaeltacht Affairs and Sport, Jack Chambers TD said. "Irish is very important for us as a community and as a nation.”
Creativity and inclusion will be at the centre of the programme, from song-writing to rapping, filmmaking to radio production, storytelling to sports commentary, for the entire school-community to engage with. ETBI Bliain na Gaeilge is not just for students who are fluent in Irish - it will be a celebration of Irish language and culture for all students. Those who have little or even no Irish will be encouraged to get involved and collaborate with each
other. The programme will run for the duration of the school year with a new competition/initiative featured every month and prizes awarded. In the interest of fairness, Irish-medium schools will not be pitted against English-medium schools. Each monthly competition will award a prize (including €500) for the best entry from an English-medium and an Irish-medium school.

I need to hear the stories, And the tales of days gone past, I need for you to understand, These memories must last. We cannot make more memories, Since they’re no longer here, So when you speak of them to me, It’s music to my ears. Always in our thoughts, Nana Eileen, Uncle Michael, aunts Patricia, Elaine, Tracey and Maeve, and cousins Noah, Lucy, Emily and Jamie.
PRAYER TO ST. MARTHA O Saint Martha, I resort to thee and thy petition and faith, I offer up to thee this light which I shall burn every Tuesday for nine Tuesdays. Comfort me in all my difficulties through the great favour thou didst enjoy when our Saviour lodged in thy house. I beseech thee to have definite pity in regard to the favour I ask (mention favour). Intercede for my family that we may always be provided for in all our necessities. I ask thee St. Martha to overcome the dragon which thou didst cast at they feet. One Our Father and three Hail Marys and a lighted candle every Tuesday, and the above prayer made known with the intention of spreading devotion to St. Martha. Never known to fail.
NOVENA TO THE SACRED HEART Dear Heart of Jesus in the past I have asked for many favours. This time I ask you this special one, (mention favour). Take it dear heart of Jesus and place it within your heart where your Father sees it. Then in his merciful eyes it will become your favour not mine. Amen. Say this prayer three times for three days and your favour will be granted. Never known to fail. Must promise publication of prayer. JK

In loving memory of Bridie O’Grady, late of Park Road, Killarney, Who passed away on 16th October 2018
In loving memory of a loving mom, Bridie O’Grady, late of Park Road, Whose Anniversary occurs on the 16th October.
In loving memory of the greatest Mom, Bridie O’Grady late of Park Road Whose Anniversary occurs on the 16th October.
REMEMBER ME Do not remember me with sadness, Do not remember me with tears, Remember all the laughter, We have shared through the years. Now I am contented, That my life it was worthwhile, Knowing that I passed along the way, I made somebody smile. When you are walking down the street, And you have got me on your mind, I am walking in your footsteps behind. Just because I am out of sight, Remember that I am with you, Each morning, noon and night. Sadly missed by her Loving Daughter Hannah (Co. Roscommon), her granddaughter Denise, her grandsons Cieran and Brian, her grandson-in-law Adrian, her great-grandchildren Jack, Ryan, Keira and Darci. Her grandsons` girlfriends Emma and Lisa (all in Co. Roscommon). Mom’s son Micheal and his wife Eileen and their family in England. Her son John who cared for Mum throughout her illness and loved her so much. Also remembered by her sister Nancy and her family in Ardagh Co. Limerick. Her brother John, his wife Patricia and their family in Drumshambo Co. Leitrim. Her brother Pat and his family.
A golden heart stopped beating, Hard working hands at rest, It broke our hearts to see you go, God only takes the best. They say that memories are golden, Well maybe that is true, But we never wanted memories, We only wanted you. Your life was love and labour, Your love for your family true, You did your best for all of us, We will always remember you. We sat beside your bedside, Our hearts were crushed and sore, We did our duty to the end, Till we could do no more. In tears we saw you sinking, We watched you fade away, And though our hearts were breaking, We knew you could not stay.
I know you soar with angels now, And that your heart has wings, I know you are watching over me, Whatever this world brings.
I really don’t know, Where to start, The day you left, You broke my heart.
I know you were a gift from God, And that you’re safe above, I know I will see you again, And once more feel your love.
Not just a crack, It broke in two, Filled with love, Just for you.
I know you live in Heaven now, And that I must go on, I know my heart will ache for you, Until my time is done. Loved and missed every day by your daughter Katie and Den.

Fondest memories, every day, of the dearest mother Cathy Guerin, wife of the late Cornelius Guerin, late of “Irish Cottage”, Muckross Road, Killarney, who sadly left us on 21/10/2005. For Mam “Surprised By Joy” “Surprised by Joy, impatient as the wind, I turned to share the transport Oh! with whom but thee, Deep buried in the silent tomb, That spot, which no vicissitude can find, Love, faithful love, Recalled thee to my mind, But how can I forget thee, Through what power, even for the least division of an hour, Have I been so beguiled, As to be blind to my most grievious loss, That thought’s return, Was the worst pang that sorrow ever bore, Save One,One only, When I stood forlorn, Knowing my heart’s best treasure was no more, That neither present time, nor years unborn, Could to my sight, That heavenly face restore.” William Wordsworth(1770-1850) Always thinking of you Mam. Also remembering, most especially, their beloved son Cornelius, who very sadly, and too young, left us on 22/9/14. READY TO GO Kerry set for league return after lengthy layoff NATIONAL LEAGUE: DIV 1
_________________________________________________________________________
Monaghan v Kerry Saturday at 2pm Inniskeen Live on GAAGO.ie
It was on. It was off. It was up in the air. Now, 219 days after the GAA initially called a halt to all the activity under its control, intercounty football is back. And not a moment too soon, says you. As we face into what could well be the bleakest winter of our lifetime, the return of top-level football and hurling comes as a timely boost to the nation’s unavoidably low morale. Of course, it comes with a catch: due to COVID-19 restrictions, no spectators will be permitted to attend matches, not for the time being at least. Fans are a huge loss to the overall spectacle but in the interest of public safety, the couch and the TV will have to do us for now. More matches than usual will be televised and streamed during this truncated campaign, including the one we’ve all been waiting for in this part of the world. Monaghan v Kerry will be available on the GAAGO website at a cost of €5. I think we’re all just relieved that we’ve made it to this point and the most important thing, of course, is that everyone involved stays fit and healthy. Having said that, this is Kerry and Peter Keane’s side will be expected to go out and do the business. They are unlikely to get any free pass from the green and gold faithful, as extreme as the extenuating circumstances surrounding this season may be. In a year that has been anything but normal, and during a time when up is down and left is right, perhaps we can take comfort in knowing that some things (like a Kerryman’s lust for an All-Ireland) never change.
EXPERIMENT
“You get a fella hot and you’ll run with him.” Those were the words of Peter Keane when it was put to him that he had little room for experimentation in the forthcoming league games, what with a Munster semi-final against Cork looming large on November 8. “If I had a closed mentality and said we’re only going to go ‘tried and trusted’, there’d be no point bringing anybody in. Sure, I might as well only keep 20 and send the rest of them home.” Those sentiments bode well for the players who have yet to nail down a starting position on the team, including the new guys on the panel: Mike Breen (Beaufort), Kevin O’Sullivan (Kenmare Shamrocks) and Joe O’Connor (Austin Stacks). That trio in particular were drafted in on the back their “hot” form in the recent Club and County Championships, while relative newcomers like Paudie Clifford and Pa Kilkenny (enjoying his second stint with the Kerry seniors) may also have played their way into the reckoning during the intercounty shutdown. One position that looks to be more or less confirmed heading into the restart is the goalkeeper spot as Shane Ryan appears to be Peter Keane’s preferred choice at this time. Kerry have a highly capable deputy in All-Ireland-winning keeper Brian Kelly and he is currently the only other option as Churchill and St Brendan’s stopper Eoghan O’Brien, who was called into the panel for 2020, is no longer involved. Kerry’s regular corner backs Jason Foley and Tom O’Sullivan are in line to retain the 2 and 4 jerseys with Graham O’Sullivan (a starter in Kerry’s last two matches against Meath and Mayo) also in contention. Kilkenny’s fine form for Kerry SFC finalists Mid Kerry has thrown him into the mix also, and the same can
be said for the returning Peter Crowley, who was one of the top performers in last year’s league before a serious cruciate ligament injury forced him out for the bones of a year. Tadhg Morley is the frontrunner for the full back berth after recovering from injury to feature in the tail end of Templenoe’s historic club campaign. In fact, he did more than just feature. Morley kept Kerry teammate Paul Geaney scoreless as his club secured a famous victory over Dingle in Round 1 of the County Championship. He could, however, face stiff opposition from East Kerry star Jack Sherwood. The Firies man was voted Player of the Championship after helping his divisional side to a second consecutive county title and his versatility makes him a candidate, perhaps off the bench, for the full back, centre back and midfield positions. Paul Murphy and Gavin White are expected to play in the half back line with Gavin Crowley, Shane Enright (a starter in Kerry’s last two games) and Brian Ó Beaglaoich also vying for a coveted geansaí.
MORAN
Midfield has been something of a problem area for The Kingdom in recent times so it will be interesting to see who gets the nod from the off. David Moran turned 32 during the lockdown but he is still considered by many to be Kerry’s first choice in this department. The Strand Road veteran did not play in the earlier league games due to injury, and he wasn’t really at his best at club level in recent months either, but Peter Keane will be hoping that the big ball-winner has saved his best for last as far as 2020 is concerned. There’s a strong chance that Kerry will have an all-Tralee midfield as no fewer than three of the remaining candidates
hail from the capital town. Na Gaeil pair Jack Barry and Diarmuid O’Connor caught the eye in the County Championship and both will be pushing for inclusion, although Barry has been hampered by a hand injury which could delay his return to county colours. Another interesting alternative is all-action Austin Stacks man Joe O’Connor. O’Connor was magnificent for The Rockies throughout their successful Club Championship run, and even in his side’s Kerry SFC defeat to Dr Crokes he was a standout performer. It would be a left-field call for Keane to hand him his debut now but if the Kerry boss is truly open to experimentation with in-form players, O’Connor is exactly the type of guy who could get a look-in. Liam Kearney’s injury is a blow – he had featured in all of Kerry’s fixtures pre-lockdown – but the fit and physical Adrian Spillane gives Kerry extra cover around the middle third. Two of the forwards, Seán O’Shea and David Clifford, are sure things but the competition for the remaining four positions is as fierce as it gets. Micheál Burns is having a fantastic year and he could well keep his No. 10 jersey but with his cousin Dara Moynihan, Stephen O’Brien (arguably Kerry’s best player in 2019) and possibly Paudie Clifford fighting it out for the two half forward posts, Keane has a tough task on his hands. The full forward line (the younger Clifford aside) is equally nebulous. Killian Spillane, James O’Donoghue, Paul Geaney and Tommy Walsh will all be knocking on the manager’s door, and let’s not forget about the deadliest forward in Kerry club football. Contrary to reports at the time, Tony Brosnan did not suffer a season-ending injury prior to Dr Crokes’ defeat to Mid Kerry in the county semi-final. While it is true that Brosnan had a punctured

lung, there was no direct cause for the complaint (e.g. a collision) and no ribs were broken – it was actually freak illness as opposed to a freak injury. As such, the timescale for his recovery was vastly overstated by the initial media reports and he is expected to be available for selection this weekend. This is good news for the many Kerry fans who are keen to see him do the business at county level.
ANNOUNCEMENT
So, plenty of decisions to be made by Peter Keane and his management team. As usual, the starting lineup is expected to be announced tonight. (We will have to wait and see if Kerry continue with their unorthodox tactic of not naming their subs on the eve of the game.) Monaghan away is a tricky tie. Kerry lost the last time these sides met in Inniskeen (2018) and later that year it took a last-gasp David Clifford goal to salvage a draw in the Super 8s tie in Clones. The Kingdom came out on top in last year’s league match in Killarney as Seán O’Shea’s outrageous sideline kick helped them to a 0-17 to 0-13 win. Winning the league is still a possibility if Kerry win both of their games and Galway slip up elsewhere, so there is plenty at stake. But look, isn’t it just great to be back?

‘GAA should pull the plug on intercounty season’ Killarney Advertiser columnist Eamonn Fitzgerald says the GAA should postpone the intercounty football and hurling championships due to the ongoing COVID-19 crisis Call them off now. Better late than never. I feel that the GAA at national level should call off all intercounty football and hurling games, foregoing the 2020 championships, and let the Sam Maguire and the McCarthy cups rest this year. The fall-out from COVID-19 is far too serious, with the number of cases and, more sadly, deaths increasing daily. On Saturday there were 1,000 cases reported. No country worldwide and, indeed, no person is immune to this deadly virus. We have never seen anything like it before. I spoke to my oldest cousin in the Bronx as early as St Patrick’s Day and she said she never endured anything like this abnormality, even though she is 101 years old (and thankfully in great health) and went through several emergencies such as World War I and 9/11.
DILEMMA
I appreciate the dilemma for organisations such as the GAA, wishing that their games and competitions should go ahead, a godsend for active players, management teams and supporters. It is good for the mental health of all, irrespective of age. On the initial re-opening, I was all in fa-
vour of going ahead with the club scene from juvenile right through to adult players, but to let 2020 be devoted exclusively for the club and colleges games and competitions. That would have provided an easily prepared road map for these competitions right up to December. It would also facilitate the running of club competitions right up to the All-Ireland club stage. Colleges’ games could have been played up to All-Ireland final stage. Furthermore, local football games administrators would have far more weekends available to stage competitions. The East Kerry Board would relish that prospect, instead of trying to run off its many competitions too quickly. As it is the O’Donoghue Cup, its premier competition, will not be concluding until 2021. We surely have learned one thing from COVID-19: the GAA should have separate seasons for club and intercounty. What a joy it was to see county players welcomed back home to train and play with the colleagues who grew up with them from under six. The elite players will eventually return to their clubs when they finish their intercounty careers –
now they will be back where they should be.
PULL THE PLUG
I say that the GAA should pull the plug on the remaining two games of the NFL and the entire 2020 championships. Postpone them. I’m sure the Dubs would settle for a postponement, but not a cancellation. A record breaking six-in-a-row is too inviting. Presently, the Fermanagh football team are in limbo, isolating after eight of their players tested positive for the virus. Do they forfeit the vital away match to Clare this weekend and their Ulster Championship fixture in a few weeks’ time? God forbid, what if players from glamorous teams such as Kerry and Dublin in football and Kilkenny in hurling are hit by the virus? Will the GAA then be forced to close down? Postpone the 2020 intercounty competitions. Yes, be that clinical. Lives are at risk and there are many examples of precedents for this action. Just look at the early years of the All-Ireland senior football series for instance.
FANS
The All-Ireland final is fixed for December 20. If Kerry get there, how many supporters would be willing to travel in bad weather, shortened days and when everything suggests that the pandem-
ic will still be with us as we prepare for year’s end? The most likely scenario is that the final would be staged behind closed doors. The risks of carrying infection are too high a price to pay for staging these games. The U20 footballers’, whose All-Ireland semi-final v Galway is also tomorrow, and the hurler’s, who must play Antrim in their league final, face the same dilemma. It is estimated that it would cost the GAA €18 million to stage their championships and the government has already pledged a nice sum to the GAA to run them off. Why incur that expense to later be asking a beleaguered government for a sizeable bailout? I don’t agree with the government allowing games for elite players to continue. The recent Irish international soccer matches should not have gone ahead and the Irish team should not have been allowed to travel to another country, running the real risk of importing the virus. The GAA caters for the biggest cohort of sports players and supporters in Ireland. Its members did a wonderful job in the first lockdown (as did other sporting and community organisations), serving communities so well. They can show the way in this second wave by pulling the plug on all games for the rest of 2020.

Fleming predicts bright future for St Paul’s ladies
WOMEN’S NATIONAL LEAGUE: DIV 1 ________________________________________________________________
St Paul’s v Tipperary Knights
SATURDAY AT 3PM KILLARNEY SPORTS CENTRE
St Paul’s Head Coach James Boo Boo Fleming is predicting big things for the club’s women’s teams over the next few years as he prepares to lead his side into their first match at National League. level since 2012. Paul’s get their Division 1 campaign up and running tomorrow afternoon against the Tipperary Knights and Fleming is hopeful that the fixture spells the beginning of a bright new era for women’s basketball in Killarney. Speaking to the Killarney Advertiser this week, the experienced coach praised the work that was done behind the scenes, which has led to the reappearance of a women’s National League team after an eight-year hiatus. “There has been a serious structure put in place over the past eight or nine years, since we were last at this level,” Fleming said. “Paul Sheehan has been very much instrumental in putting all of this together. Right now, we want to build a team that will be there in seven, eight, nine, ten years’ time. This is not a short-term goal. We have very, very good underage teams coming through and we want to have something for them to play in when they’re in the 18-20 bracket. “I was an assistant to James Weldon back when we were Super League, and we were very competitive at that
R

level. I don’t see why, five or six years down the road, we can’t be in the Super League again and holding our own up there. That’s the long-term goal: to have ladies basketball in Killarney for the foreseeable future and to be competitive at all grades, not just National League, and competing with all of the biggest teams in the country.” On paper, Paul’s certainly seem to have gathered a formidable squad ahead of the 2020/21 campaign. The team will be led by American star Jenna Kaufmann and current Irish international Danielle O’Leary, a player Fleming describes as “one of the best in the country”. “We also have Rheanne O’Shea, Lynn Jones, Máiréad Finnegan and Cassandra Buckley, who have all played at this level,” Fleming adds. “The last time we won the cup in 2012, they were all part of it. “We have two Irish U16 internationals from Kenmare: Amy Harrington, who is a daughter of Maureen Harrington the runner, and Tania Salvado-McCormack, who
is the current Irish U16 Player of the Year. And then we have Tina Coffey (Mary Jo Curran’s daughter), Róisín Griffin and Aisling Campbell from Glenbeigh, and Aisling O’Mahony from Tralee. And that’s in addition to all the young girls from Killarney. So we have assembled a good squad.”
place? “Do you know what? It has been very easy to prepare actually because we have a very good bunch of girls. We have followed every procedure, every protocol and we played a challenge game on Friday night. So everything is in place really.”
Of course, any optimism for the upcoming action on the court is tempered somewhat by the threat posed by the COVID-19 crisis, which appears likely to cause disruption to all sports in the coming weeks and months.
Tomorrow (we hope) brings with it the dawn of the new season as Paul’s host Tipperary, and Boo Boo, who will be joined on the sideline by assistant coaches Carolyn O’Mahony and Monza Salvado and team manager Mags Cronin, is in optimistic form.
Right now, we want to build a team that will be there in seven, eight, nine, ten years’ time. This is not a short-term goal. “ F o r now anyway, it’s up and running,” Fleming says, cautiously. “I would take it that this week and maybe next week will go ahead but I could see a stall on it for a couple of weeks (after that). We’re preparing as if it’s going to go ahead as normal.” Have those preparations been hampered by the pandemic and the various restrictions that have been put in
“Last year was Tipperary’s first year in the league and they were towards the bottom of the Southern Conference. They’re very tall and very well structured. They’ll be looking to go inside a lot. Looking at the teams around us, I’d be hopeful that we will be challenging for the Southern Conference. “I think the two teams to watch in the league this year will be Ulster Elks and Templeogue in the Northern Conference. They’re the two teams that I would fear the most, along with Portlaoise and Galway. I would probably put us number five. Looking at it at the moment, that’s where I would see us. “We’re away to Tipperary in the cup and then if we beat them we’ll have Limerick at home. So I’d be hopeful of getting to the cup semi-final and securing one of the playoff spots (top three finish) – maybe even winning the conference.”

Is this town big enough for the both of us? NATIONAL LEAGUE: DIVISION 1 ________________________________________________________________
Scotts Lakers v Killarney Cougars
SATURDAY AT 6PM KILLARNEY SPORTS CENTRE
LIVE ON www.stpaulskillarney.ie
Every now and then, sport, even at a local level, turns into a bit of a soap opera. Allies disagree. Friends become foes. Facts, rumours and lies intermingle and spread like… a virus, I suppose, for the want of a less unfortunate analogy. Like it or not, the storyline draws you in, and you can’t help but wonder what’s going to happen next. Killarney basketball found itself engulfed in one such storyline this past summer when it emerged that key members of the town’s National League team, the Scotts Lakers (aka St Paul’s), were considering leaving the club. That would be juicy enough gossip at the best of times but things got more salacious when it transpired that instead of perhaps transferring to a different area code, they were instead considering joining another National League team in the parish of Killarney - one that didn’t even exist yet. San Francisco native Justin Tuason, himself a former Laker, lined out with the Killarney Cougars in the County League last season and he and his clubmates were exploring the possibility of forming a team that could compete in the second
SCOTTS LAKERS TEAM 2020
tier of Irish basketball, alongside and in direct competition with St Paul’s. It was considered by many to be a bold move when one takes into account the size of Killarney. For comparison, Dublin and Limerick are the only other towns that have more than one side in the 16team division, and they obviously aren’t towns at all, they’re cities. Add to that the fact that the existing National League team, the Lakers, seemed to be light on local players in recent seasons, and the obvious question was, would there be enough local talent (and, perhaps more importantly, local interest) to sustain two National League teams in a town of 14,504? Well, we’re about to find out. The Cougars got the green light to enter the league with recently departed Lakers stars Mark Greene and Andy Fitzgerald central to their plans for the upcoming season, a season which tips off tomorrow evening against (who else?) the Lakers. |
E LEPHANT
“You couldn’t script it better,” says Cougars player/coach Tuason, addressing the elephant in the room. “A few of us, my-
self included, had differing opinions from what St Paul’s were doing as a club going forward. This club that we have, before we even formed it, we made sure that everyone knew it was going to be as local as possible. There wouldn’t be any professionals on the team. No one is getting paid. It’s all about developing the culture and the future for the kids. “I think that’s what really sold the idea to everyone. And I don’t think people needed a lot of selling after some of the bad times they’ve had. “If we’re successful, it’s found money. If we just establish ourselves in the league… That’s really what we’re going for. When it comes to the drama with St Paul’s, I’m two years removed from them. Mark and Andy are a year removed. I don’t think I have too much bad blood with any of them. Sure they have a whole new team anyway, so…” It would, perhaps, be unfair to delve too deeply into those “differing opinions” without hearing all sides of the story, but I think it is fair to say that the minutes afforded to a number of Cork players last season didn’t sit well with certain people. To give St Paul’s and their previous management team their due, their lineup
worked in one sense. The team finished second in Division 1 and had the option of a playoff match to get into the Super League. In the end, the club came together and decided to decline that invitation, saying that they would stay in Division 1 and try to “increase the strength in depth of the squad and to develop the club structure”. “Several underage players in the club have the potential and ability to progress to National League level and the club wants to develop this player pathway progression, allowing them the opportunity to succeed,” an official statement read at the time. Speaking to their new Head Coach, former Gleneagle Lakers star Jarlath Lee, it’s clear that this process is well underway.
We have a massive squad, we have 23 players and the oldest is 24, so alot of young guys. It's looking good.
SPORT
16.10.2020 "The team has completely changed from last year. Our captains are Mark O’Shea and Jamie O’Sullivan. Jamie is only 17 and Mark is 22, so he’s still very young too. They have a big responsibility to gel the team. The (team’s) communication skills in the last few years probably weren’t the best… “This is all Killarney people. You also have Keelin Houlihan from Killorglin, Gary Murphy from Tralee, and we’ve linked with Gneeveguilla. So we’ve got Ronan Collins, David Gleeson and Lorcan Keane who have joined the squad as well. They’re super players and we have our own young guys too. Senan O’Leary, for example, will make the squad of 12 this weekend. He’s only 16. So going forward the club is in a very, very strong position.” Lee’s squad will be bolstered by the addition of two professionals, namely Ben Miller from Canada and Matias Boho from Spain. “Matias was with Reading Rockets last year,” Lee says. “He averaged around 12 or 13 points a game. We played a preseason match against Killorglin (the Lakers lost by 10) and he had 25 points. He’s a solid player. A good shooter. Then Ben Miller is very similar to (ex-Laker) Seán O’Brien. He gets out on the fast break and he’s well able to shoot the ball.” Marco Bencic, the son of former Lakers coach Vojkan, has flown back into Ireland today and is expected to return for the third game of the season, after he has completed his mandatory 14-day period of self-quarantine. Another bonus for the Lakers is the addition to the backroom team of Jarlath’s son, Jordan, who has come on board as a strength and conditioning coach. Jordan is an extremely accomplished high jumper and has a background in basketball himself having represented Paul’s and Ireland at juvenile level. “It’s going to be fun,” Lee Sr insists. “I’m delighted to be coaching the team this year. I started this process two years ago with the U16s and last year with the U18s we only lost one game. My personal goal was to be the National League coach in a couple of years’ time – it has just come a bit sooner than expected – but I have high expectations for the club this year.” How high are we talking? “There are two goals. Obviously, we want to win the cup.” The Lakers also play the Cougars in the first round of that competition and Lee admits that they have a difficult route to the final, that’s if they can navigate the challenge of their local rivals
63
Lynch. “Excluding myself and Igor, it’s a bunch of local guys which is kind of cool. It’s kind of how it’s supposed to be in a town like this. It’s a weird mix. We have old guys and young guys. Sometimes we want to go fast and we realise we have some guys who are closer to 30 than they are to 20!”

in Round 1. “Carlow will be the opposition in the second round and they’re one of the top teams in the league, so it’s going to be extremely tough in the second game (for whoever gets there). The club’s goal for the league is to finish mid-table. I do not like losing any games, so I’ll be expecting us to be at the top of the table come the end of the season, or the top two anyway. That’s my expectation.”
“I think it’s going to be a fairly physical one. There’s more at stake than just the game. There’s pride. There’s bragging rights around the town. I think there’ll be some pushing and shoving. I think it’s going to be one of the better games of the season. “I can’t wait. You know me, I’ve been looking forward to this for two years.”
Amidst all the speculation in recent months, there were some whispers that Paul’s wouldn’t have a National League team at all this year, but Lee asserts that that will never be on the cards.
The Cougars will be looking for big contributions from Tuason, Greene, Fitzgerald and another new signing, 6’6” forward Igor Markiewicz. A player of Polish descent who grew up in Ireland, Markiewicz lined out for UCD Marian in the Super League last season.
“People have to be realistic: St Paul’s are always going to have a National League team. There are 500 juvenile members here, so St Paul’s aren’t going anywhere. For the moment, and for the foreseeable future, there are going to be two National League teams in Killarney.”
“We have a couple of boys from Cahersiveen, the O’Shea brothers (Mark and Cian) - they played for Ballincollig the past couple of years,” Tuason says. “And we also have the rest of the County League team from last year. Guys like Kevin O’Regan, Tommy Bowler and Jack
Tuason says that Head Coach Pa Carey (formerly of the Tralee Warriors) has been implementing a few new ideas – some presses and zone defences – that the Cougars will be able to throw at their opponents.
“Conservatively we’d be hoping for mid-table but I was really impressed with how we played against Tralee (in a recent friendly). I’m a bit more optimistic than I was before. Hopefully we can get to the top three. But to be competitive week in, week out is really what I’m going for.” Of course, all of this – the match, the season, everything – is COVID-19-dependent. Nothing is set in stone. Even at the time of going to print, there were rumours of games being postponed in Basketball Ireland competitions. But when we do get the ball rolling here in Killarney, and hopefully that happens this weekend, there are sure to be more dramatic twists in this riveting new soap opera.
As for the challenge of their noisy neighbours, Lee is confident that his charges can get the win on Saturday. “As everyone knows, Cougars have a lot of ex-St Paul’s players. They’re more of a Team Kerry – they pull from different clubs – so they’ll have a decent squad. It’ll be a tough game if everything is firing for them. If Mark Greene starts having a good game, it’ll be tough. “I do expect us to win the game. I’m not going to lie about that. I personally think that the way we’re shaping up at the moment, they have to fear us. We don’t have to fear them.” |
ROUGH AND TUMBLE
For his part, Tuason is expecting a typical rough and tumble local derby.
