No One Will Care About Your Leaving Results… Not Even You Words: Adam Moynihan

Congratulations to everyone who got their Leaving Cert results on Wednesday. If you’re planning on going to college, I hope you got the points you need. If you didn’t do as well as you hoped and you don’t end up getting your first choice, my advice would be to not freak out. It might seem like an absolute disaster right now but you could look back in ten years’ time and consider it a blessing in disguise. I touched on this back in June during the exams themselves but the Leaving is not the be all and end all, nor is it the deciding factor in whether or not you’ll lead a happy and successful life. I remember when I sat my exams, I thought our performances would be used as a measuring stick for the rest of our days, that it would go on our apocryphal permanent record, so to speak. Of course, that couldn’t be farther from the truth. I’ve chatted with loads of people over the past couple of days about their own experiences and while some commented that their points were initially important in terms of getting the course they wanted, virtually everyone said their results never came up again. As in, never. When you get to college, no one asks you how many points you got. It doesn’t come up when you meet new people, or go on a date. It doesn’t even

get mentioned at job interviews. Trust me, in a month’s time no one will care what you got in your Leaving. Not even you. You might be worried about getting your first choice course but the funny thing about that is, plenty of people don’t end up working in the same field they studied in (even if their Leaving went to plan). I know someone who studied English but works in child care, someone who studied speech therapy but works in recruitment, someone who studied equine science but works as a customer service supervisor, and someone who studied accounting but ended up being a musician. I know people who went to college and dropped out. I know people who didn’t go to college at all. All of them are grand. If you get your points, and enjoy your chosen course, and get a job related to your degree, fair play. But if you don’t get your points, or if you don’t end up enjoying your course, or if you decide that college isn’t for you, that’s okay too. Things will work out fine if you stay positive. And if some clown does ask you how many points you got in your Leaving, there’s nothing stopping you from lying. “600 mate. Happy enough.”

Words: Adam Moynihan Prominent Killarney hotelier and IHF spokesman Tom Randles says the government’s proposed VAT increase on tourism-related goods could have major ramifications for the town’s tourist trade. The rates for accommodation and food were lowered to 9% in 2011 to help promote job creation. However, a recent review of the VAT rate carried out by the Department of Finance said the measure had achieved its purpose and recommended that it be reset at 13.5%. Speaking to the Killarney Advertiser, Mr Randles said that such a move would lead to higher prices for people visiting the town. “If VAT goes up to the proposed 13.5% it would be very dangerous for the tourism industry, particularly in Kerr,” he said. “It may dampen demand if prices increase. If the market was to tighten up it would be very bad for Killarney. The VAT rate was lowered to 9% in 2011 and that was a great success. “The current rate is normal in Europe,” he added. “10 other EU countries have a rate of 10% or lower.” The proposed VAT hike would predominantly affect the larger hotels as most B&Bs are not registered for VAT. Earlier this year, the TEIR 1 tourism report revealed that 1.1 million visitors come to Killarney annually and the vast majority stay overnight. An increase of 30% is expected before 2025 but if the VAT rates return to 13.5% as proposed, those figures may have to be revised.

Kerry Player Facing Serious Garda Assault Charges Sports fans across the country were shocked this week by the news that a prominent Kerry senior footballer is to appear in court in November on charges of assaulting two on-duty gardaí. The allegations relate to an incident which occurred when the player, who played a significant role in Kerry’s championship campaign, was out socialising in a Kerry town late last year. He is charged with assaulting two male gardaí (causing one of them harm), assaulting an Eastern European male and threatening to assault a female garda. One of the gardaí was

taken to University Hospital Kerry for treatment on a serious hand injury which kept him out of work for a number of weeks. The player could face a maximum sentence of up to five years if he is convicted of the more serious offence in the Circuit Criminal Court. The maximum sentence he could receive if his case is heard

before the District Court is one year. The District Court Judge and the DPP are yet to make a decision on whether the case will be heard in the Circuit Criminal Court or District Court. The footballer will be accused of the offence on November 7 at a sitting of Tralee District Court.

One-Hour Parking Outside Cinema Baffles Locals

A perplexing parking policy was brought to our attention this week by a mother who was forced leave Killarney Cineplex halfway through a movie to purchase a new ticket. Parking along the East Avenue Road, where the famous Killarney picture house is located, is limited to a single hour between 8.30am and 6.30pm from Monday to Saturday. That means parents who wish to take their kids to a matinee are left with a choice between attempting to find parking elsewhere in town and parking near the cinema and leaving after

an hour to buy another parking ticket. Surely special dispensation should be made at this particular location in town? Every effort should be made to promote local businesses, especially one like the cinema which has played such a significant role in the history and economy of Killarney. Many commercial enterprises feel hindered by the parking issues in town, as evidenced by the TEIR 1 report in which 25% of business owners cited parking as the primary barrier to development. The fact that potential customers and tourists are being put

Kerry Car Used In Ukraine Bomb Attack

A car with plates registered in County Kerry was used in a June 24 attack in Odessa, Ukraine. In an apparent attack on security firm owner Andriy Babenko, the Honda Accord with 04-KY plates was rigged with explosive devices. It was parked outside of Babenko’s house and detonated when

he arrived home. Babenko only suffered injuries to his leg as a result. Gardaí have said they do not think that any Irish people or Irish gangs are behind the Ukrainian attack. They believe the car had been scrapped in this country before being exported to the Ukraine.

off by the lack of parking in the town centre is one of the key issues, but unfair restrictions like the one outside the cinema are also a factor for other enterprises. We have experienced difficulties ourselves outside the office here on Monsignor Hugh O’Flaherty Road at the top of High Street. The Killarney Advertiser is part of a relatively new complex that includes the Park Place Apartments and other businesses, yet there is no suitable loading bay or parking outside our doors or those of our neighbours.

It’s Time For Michael Healy-Rae To Talk Book

Independent TD Michael Healy-Rae has written a book of recollections about his life and growing up in Kerry. Time to Talk: Stories from the heart of Ireland will be published by the end of October, Mr Healy-Rae said. “I can’t say too much about it but it is a book of stories that I wrote about growing up and different things like that. It is not a political book,” Mr HealyRae added. Among other things, it’s be-

lieved that Michael will reveal the biggest regret of his life, a story he has shared previously in a TV interview with comedian Tommy Tiernan. The cover of the book features a wonderful photograph of Deputy Healy-Rae by popular Killarney photographer Valerie O’Sullivan. The book will be hitting shelves at the end of October but is already available to pre-order from Easons and Amazon.

Queensland Rose Visits Aunt In Killarney

The 2018 Queensland Rose Sarah Griffin-Breen visited Killarney this week to check in with her aunt, Lilly Griffin. “Lilly took us up to the Gap of Dunloe which was absolutely spectacular,” Sarah said. “We were in awe of the natural beauty and landscape. It’s so different to home. We then travelled through the Black Valley and eventually stopped in at the beautiful Torc Waterfall.

Muckross House was incredibly impressive and very tranquil. “Killarney is such a beautiful and wonderful town with a vibrant atmosphere. I always love coming back to visit.” The Rose of Tralee International Festival will run from Friday, August 17 to Tuesday, August 21 when the 2018 Rose of Tralee is crowned in the Festival Dome live on RTÉ One.

Wednesday was Judgement Day for Leaving Cert students the length and breadth of the country and in Killarney one girl in particular stood out above the rest. St Brigid’s Secondary School pupil Éadaoin O’Donoghue, daughter of Mike and Mish, emerged with a remarkable total of seven H1 grades (between 90-100%). She was one of just 53 students nationally to achieve this distinction. “I’m delighted with the results,” Éadaoin, who plans on studying pharmacy, said. “Thanks to my school and my wonderful teachers for their hard work throughout the year.” In total, 57,000 people received their results this week. Students who applied for college will find out if they have secured their firstchoice places next Monday when offers are made through the CAO. More students elected to sit higher-level papers in 2018 due to last year’s overhaul of the grading system. St Brigid’s Principal, Ms Róisín Moore, said the school were delighted with the results achieved by their students.

“They were an excellent group of girls who contributed significantly to school life over the past five or six years,” she said. “They were all-rounders. One of our students (Éadaoin O’Donoghue) achieved seven Higher Level Grade 1s, 13% of the girls achieved over 550 points while 25% achieved over 500 points and 67% of our Leaving Certificate Applied class received distinctions. These grades are well above the national norms. All of the girls can be very proud of their achievements.” Meanwhile, St Brendan’s College Principal Seán Coffey emphasised his satisfaction that students had achieved at the highest level in the 20 subjects on offer at Leaving Cert level in the school. He also recognised the myriad levels of ability in the year group and congratulated all those who had worked to achieve their best in accordance with their ability. He thanked staff for the work and engagement and the parents of the young men for the manner of their support and commitment. For more photos from Leaving Cert results day, see P20.

Almost €200k Worth Of Cannabis Seized Gardaí have seized over 140 suspected cannabis plants, as well as cannabis herb, during a raid on a house at Glenbeigh this week. Pending analysis, the drugs could have a combined value of around €192,000. The search warrant was executed by

gardaí from the Killarney District who say they found a sophisticated grow house in operation when they raided the house. The scene has been preserved for technical examination. No arrests have yet been made.

Keep It Local With Food Producers At Market Square

The newly redeveloped New Market Square continues to go from strength-to-strength and food lovers are in for a real treat at what is fast becoming one of the town’s favourite locations. Hazel O’Malley and Ciara O’Connor brought their Old Market Flea to New Market Square in June and July and now, in conjunction with the Market Square Development Committee, they’re presenting their new venture: Food Producers at Market Square. “It’s going to be for anyone producing food, such as fruit and veg, baked products, we have chutneys and jams and there will be street food as well,” Hazel

explains. “We’re hoping people will come up and they can buy their weekly shopping, get their fruit and veg, and people on their lunch break can come and get a bite to eat.” For the organisers and the committee behind the idea, it’s all about keeping it local. “It’s small local businesses and it’s local people, both those who are established and those who are starting out,” Hazel says. “We want to promote the idea that Killarney has its own food culture and food producers.” Check out Food Producers at Market Square on Friday, August 24 from 10am-2pm and every Friday thereafter.

The following is a letter from Jerry O’Grady from the Hugh O’Flaherty Memorial Society in relation to the Killarney Advertiser’s ongoing McShain Campaign Dear Adam, Beyond question, Killarney should honour the McShains and for the same reasons, we should also honour the Brownes (Earls of Kenmare). Without the visionary work and generosity of both families, Killarney would be a very different and inferior place. This can best be done in a high profile way within or immediately outside the grounds of Killarney House & Gardens. While naming parks, roads, streets or indeed roundabouts in honour of notable individuals is welcome, none of these options generate anything near the public interest or awareness generated by a well-located sculpted memorial. The vast majority of people pass by these “named” roads, parks etc., without ever realising or questioning who this person was or what they achieved. With a sculpted memorial, people are far more inclined to stop, look and enquire. Back in 2009 when the committee members of Hugh O’Flaherty Memorial Society were deciding what form the Hugh O’Flaherty Memorial should take, we debated at length important considerations such as: • lifelike or abstract • dynamic or still • explained or self-interpret • scale & location • material With all due respect to modern cryptic pieces that you are invited to interpret for yourself, we were unanimous in our belief that the memorial should be “lifelike & life-size” and should be “explained”. With that agreed brief and applying a firm budget, we publicly invited submissions from sculptors and received some 30 proposals from around Ireland and overseas. The proposal submitted by the chosen sculptor Alan Ryan Hall, addressed all of the above criteria and thanks to Killarney Town Council, we were facilitated with a most appropriate location. I think most people would agree that since the unveiling in 2013, the large numbers of people who on a daily basis are attracted to the memorial, read the story and take group pictures and selfies, confirms that under all the above headings we made the right decision. In a perfect world, such memorials to the McShains and the Brownes should be located within the excellent well-visited Gardens but if it was felt that the historic integrity of the Gardens would be compromised by new sculptures, as an alternative solution they could be placed within alcoves built into the high stone wall towards the Kenmare Place end of Mission Road. When I was in the Chamber Executive back in 2007 (prior to the foundation of the Hugh O’Flaherty Memorial Society) we sub-

mitted a proposal to Killarney Town Council to consider developing a “Sculpture Trail” along the length of the Mission Road boundary wall from the Haha to the Beech Road junction. The attached proposal sketch, best describes this proposal. The main part of the 2007 Sculpture Walk Proposal was as follows: • The c. 400 metres of wall in question is fronted by a very wide footpath – conducive to pedestrians pausing to view without causing a hindrance. • This portion of wall also appears to be the part which has least depth/density of trees & shrubs behind it (for the most part at least), and so would appear to present an ideal opportunity to lower sections of the wall and provide good visual access for passers by through to the park and Killarney House & Gardens. • Our proposal would be to lower 5 metre sections of the wall at approximately 30 metre distances and rebuild the openings in an inward curving semi-circle alcove of 2.5 metre into the Park to an approximate height of 1 metre. This curved wall would then be topped by a wrought iron railing to the height of the remaining wall. The design of the railing to be in keeping with the railing either side of the Golden Gates. This would in a tasteful and functional way: • Open up vistas into the Park between the Golden Gates and the New Entrance. • Create c. 12 paved alcoves off the existing pavement suitable to receive items of sculpture as and when circumstances and/or funds allowed. • Provide a unique “Sculpture Walk” within the town that would add greatly to the historic, artistic & cultural offerings to locals and visitors. To conclude, regardless of whether the location is within or outside the grounds of Killarney House and Gardens, Killarney should not delay in creating appropriate and well located memorials to the McShain and Browne families. Columnist Anne Lucey gives her take on happenings in Killarney, Kerry and beyond

“If Even One Woman Is Forced To Cover Herself, We Are All Complicit” The burka question that is raging across the water and in neighbouring Europe right now has echoes in our own near history – perhaps not the issue of the ban, so much as our versions of what women need to wear. Denmark is the latest to pass a law banning the concealment of the face in public, following countries like Austria, Belgium and France. Belgium’s ban was upheld by the European Court of Justice. In Britain there are not yet calls for a ban, but the subject is getting much airing. The difference between the headdresses and face and body coverings has had to be parsed, but generally it is the full face covering or “burka” and “niqab”, which includes a full black robe which causes concern and, I would argue, offence in Europe. And while human rights group Amnesty International jumps up and down, and male columnists here and in the UK get hot under the collar about Boris Johnson’s comparison of the dress to a post box, they should bear in mind that feminists and many women in Islamic countries deeply resent having to don the concealing garb. The dress is, of course, a political and extremist religious statement and it is a relatively recent one, and not based on scripture, but on an extreme male view of Islam. The only thing in Islamic scripture is to dress modestly and this applies to men as well as to women. A man, for example, is told to dress modestly between the waist and his knees. (The mind boggles!) But, as we know, it is the woman who bears the brunt of the severest prescriptions. It is an uncomfortable fact but a fact nonetheless that countries like Saudi Arabia have among the most repressive regimes for women anywhere in the world, and at any period in world history, and many countries like Egypt and Iran are sliding backwards as far as women are concerned. The woman is seen as a temptress, and best hidden and sat upon or she would lead the man astray. But before we too get carried away we need to remember that until very recently in this country, women would not go into Catholic churches without a scarf or a mantilla. But at least the mantilla was beautiful and of the finest of lace and we all wish we had held onto them for reusing! 20 years ago in Tunisia women along the Algerian border in long black “chadors” reminded me of Peig on the Great Blasket. The Irish black shawl was the prescribed dress for rural widowed women here, remember. And even in cities, women widowed had to wear black for a year, in a climate that became especially repressive for women following Irish independence and worse still in the De Valera era who seemed not to be able to turn without consulting cardinals. (Think of the marriage bar, the ban on contraception, the mother and child scheme etc.) Times have changed here at last, as they had long ago changed across Europe, and what no one seems to acknowledge publicly in the whole debate is the deep offence many of us take to the full-face covering and long black garb on the streets and in the shops. And I think therein lies one of the central failures of immigration policy or lack of it in Europe, and it is one

of the great gaps in European leadership as well as in this country: there is not enough and there has not been enough recognition of the mores and customs and hard-won rights of the indigenous people or of their opinions. I would argue a tolerant society can hold onto its own rules and regulations and insist on its own customs and still make the stranger welcome and very welcome. Instead, everyone who expresses offence at this kind of dress on our streets is effectively silenced and swatted away as racist and misogynist by journalists on Twitter. This is too simplistic and journalists especially should examine the issue rather than take out the puritanical chastity belt of name-calling, I feel. But the ham-fisted way immigration has been handled is causing deep and simplistic fault lines to appear right across the best of circles and most civilised and tolerant countries in Europe. The idea that women are forced around in black polyester from head to toe, following their husbands or sons, and not allowed out without them, is deeply offensive to western culture, to secular culture, to Christian culture. It is not an exaggeration to say that the burka is as offensive to many of us, as the wearing of a bikini in a shopping mall in Saudi Arabia or Pakistan – because it dehumanises the woman and parades her as an object to be owned. The dilemma for most people is how much is the woman being forced to don the face covering? And will this isolate her further if there is a ban? It is not easy to address it. But I will be guided by a

number of educated Muslim women: Egyptian born columnist and lecturer Mona Eltahawy supported the ban on the burka in France and “everywhere”. She did so as a feminist and Muslim woman and said it appalled her to hear the defence of the niqab/ burka in Europe, by people who should defend women’s rights. Other women have spoken out this week about how they hated having to wear it. I read also an account by an Irish nurse who married an Egyptian man. She’s back working in Waterford and says she wears the headscarf - in the hospital - not because he tells her to but because it’s a way of advertising Islam. “I love wearing it because people now know I am Muslim and therefore, Islam can gain a positive image through me. Wearing my hijab at work was a new concept for my managers as I was the first nurse to wear hijab in the hospital,” she wrote in 2017. I find it interesting that our hospitals have bent over backwards to throw out crucifixes and statues yet the headscarf, which is also a religious symbol, is allowed. In my opinion it should not be allowed in the workplace, and certainly should not be allowed in public hospitals, whatever about the street. But we are back to the burka question that is the all covering in the supermarket and street. On balance I think it should be banned, if only to show this kind of message it sends out about women is not tolerated. Above all though, if even one woman is forced to cover herself, and forced by her husband and the men in her grouping to go around in this garb, against her will, we are all complicit.

Neglect Of The Blue Pool Is Shameful

From the Burka to the Blue Pool. I wonder if there is some proscription by the NPWS that it must be covered? Or a ban on viewing it? A once wonderful walkway, where kingfishers were regularly spotted, the neglect of this popular spot, which once had a rope for the blind, is shameful. All the paths are heavily over-grown and so much so the Blue Pool itself is difficult to see any more. Even after this dry, hot summer, the paths are dirty and soft and mucky. The wooden barriers on the bridge at the pool are red rotten and actually pose a safety hazard. Far from protecting you, you would actually fall in if you lent on them. I despair at how much our National Park is neglected. It seems no one is taking it seriously and it is regularly highlighted by leading environmentalists as an example of mismanagement and neglect. During the summer I visited a yew wood off the beaten track near Torc. To say it was degraded is an understatement. The wood is destroyed by deer. Some of the ancient trees have died off and those that remain are in a very sorry state. None of our politicians takes the National Park seriously. Not one. Perhaps they are too flat out and haven’t time to go for a walk? Well, how do they think? Or do they think at all? I suspect they do not think deeply at all about anything. Very few of them seem to have any kind of vision apart from gut reaction. They could all do with a month in the National Park clearing

rhododendron, or repairing the fencing in the Blue Pools. It would do them the world of good to take time out and listen to nature and get their feet dirty for the sake of a public cause.

Killarney Company Called In To Manage Pope’s Visit

Pope Francis is due to attend the World Meeting of Families in Dublin next week and a Killarney-based company has been playing a key role as official logistics provider for the event. Under the guidance of Managing Director Niall Thompson, Interflow Logistics is using all of its expertise in the complexity of international freight forwarder and transport arrangements to ensure that all elements of the various events for the World Meeting of Families arrive on site in Dublin without a hitch. The World Meeting of Families is a huge occasion. Upwards of 40 volunteers for have been working industriously to make up no fewer than 44,000 pilgrim bags for shipping to the RDS ahead of the opening ceremony, as well as sorting and packing more than 3,000 vestments for the occasion. Tickets for all of the events have been booked - indeed, by midnight on the first day of booking, some 353,874 people had booked tickets for the WMOF 2018 Closing Mass in Phoenix Park on Sunday August 26, where Pope Francis will be the main

celebrant. The Pope will also attend the previous days Festival of Families in Croke Park, a celebration of family life in music, song, dance and spoken word. The Festival in and of itself is a gargantuan undertaking, involving an orchestra of over 50 musicians; more than 700 Irish sean nós and contemporary dancers, including 500 from Irish dance schools across the country; a 1,000-strong choir; 100 community groups; and 300 flag bearers. Performers include Andrea Bocelli, The Riverdance Troupe, Nathan Carter, Dana Masters, Daniel O’Donnell, Celine Byrne, The Begley Family, Holy Family Deaf Choir & Deaftones, Patrick Bergin, The Priests, Paddy Moloney, Bridgie and Missy Collins, and Moya Brennan. It has also been confirmed that the O’Neill Sisters from Causeway will perform for the pontiff. The O’Neills, who received worldwide acclaim following their online cover of the Irish classic Red is the Rose, will be familiar to the people of Killarney; the talented sisters have a show with Celtic Steps at the Killarney Racecourse every Saturday night at 8.30pm.

The O’Neill Sisters, who have a weekly show in Killarney, will perform for the Pope in Dublin.

Muckross Traditional Farms Wins 4th Sandford Award

Free Heritage Week 2018 Events There was cause for celebration at Muckross Traditional Farms this week as Féile Chultúir Chiarraí, a festival held annually each May, was awarded the Sandford Award for Heritage Education. Speaking at the prizegiving, Sandford Award Administrator Jayne Ellis said the Féile has deservedly held the prestigious award over four consecutive judging visits since 2003. “It draws on the expert skills of two incredibly talented teams from the estate of Muckross House in Killarney National Park with additional curriculum support from a highly motivated Principal Teacher from the local town,” she said. “It is an outstanding example of multi-sensory and active learning and should be regarded as a national beacon of best educational practice for experiencing and understanding life from a particular time and place in rural Ireland.” The Féile Chultúir Chiarraí (Festival of Kerry Culture) is held annually over five days in May. It’s hosted by Muckross Traditional Farms, which are located in the grounds of Muckross House in Killarney National Park. It is organised and delivered jointly between teams of staff from Muckross House Research Library and Muckross Traditional Farms along with the curriculum support of a Principal Teacher from a local primary school. This popular festival for Irish primary school children from third to sixth classes (8-12 year olds) explores the

traditions, customs and chores of everyday country life in 1930s and 1940s Kerry before rural electrification changed things. Toddy Doyle Farm & Events Manager “The winning of a forth Sandford Educational Award by Muckross Traditional Farms is a testimony to the quality, commitment, energy and enthusiasm of the Traditional Farms and Research Library staff, and that of the demonstrators that work on the project,” said Toddy Doyle, Farm and Events Manager. “We are particularly indebted to Ursula Coffey, Principal of the Holy Cross Mercy School, Cork singer/songwriter Jimmy Crowley and Pat Broderick from Newcastle West who delivers the Seed to Seat workshop. The project is a perfect fit for the remit of the Traditional Farms: ‘Preserve the traditions and skills of rural Ireland in particular Kerry’. “Muckross Traditional Farms is a conduit to showcase the best of our Irish Culture Traditions and Skills. 2018 has been a very busy year for the Traditional Farm’s staff with the 25th anniversary of its opening in May, followed by the judging of the Sandford Award, then a Royal visit in June, next up was a Nationwide programme special to celebrate 25 years of opening, then a busy season and next week a full programme of free events to celebrate Heritage Week 2018 at the Muckross Schoolhouse.

Hozier’s Back!!!

Hozier revealed he’ll play three intimate rehearsal shows in Dublin this September It’s been a while since we heard anything from Hozier but now he’s delighting Irish fans with not one but three Dublin shows next month. Billed as ‘intimate rehearsal shows’, fans can probably expect to hear some new music from the ‘Take Me To Church’ hitmaker, and all proceeds from the shows will go to three charities close to Hozier’s heart: Safe Ireland, One In Four and the Peter McVerry Trust. The three gigs will take place on Monday September 3rd, Wednesday September 5th and Friday September 7th in The Academy, Dublin, with tickets costing €30, limited to 2 per person, available from 9am today at www.Hozier.com. Following these Dublin shows, Hozier will then play London’s Koko on Tuesday 11th September, in aid of War Child, with a further announcement on Ireland, UK & European dates coming on 17th September. New music from the man himself is “set to follow very soon”.

The Simpsons Movie Sequel In The Works

It took 28 years for them to reach the big screen the first time. And its taken another 11 on top of that for The Simpsons Movie to get a sequel. A second film staring Springfield’s finest is finally in the works at Fox, according to the Wall Street Journal. The article examined what is going to happen to Fox’s movie arm 20th Century Fox, after the parent company was purchased by Disney as part of its $71billion merger approved last month. It claimed the movie studio may be ‘drastically downsized’, but must continue working on the projects as if it wont be, which includes a Simpsons Movie sequel. The studio is also working on a big screen adaptation of Family Guy that will be part live-action, as well as a Bob’s Burgers movie. The first Simpsons Movie, released in 2007, was a huge commercial success, raking in well over half-abillion dollars at the box office.

Have You Seen The Manicure Christina Aguilera Got While She Was In Dublin? Christina Aguilera was in Ireland last week for a flying visit to play a private gig at the 3 Arena. Before taking to the stage, Treesha from Nails Dublin on Wicklow Street was lucky enough to do the singer’s manicure. She went for the shade Cityscape, which she can be seen showing it off in the Instagram post below. Our first glimpse of Aguilera on Irish soil was an Instagram post of the singer on Dublin’s Drury Street in which she claimed to be proud of her Irish roots. The private gig she played was for an American Insurance company Allstate. Riverdance acted as the support act on the night entertaining the guests in between courses of their meal.

Killarney Looking Good Awards

Mayor of Killarney John Sheahan, Guest of Honour Daniel O’Donnell and Kieran Healy (Killarney Advertiser) with Kate O’Leary of The Laurels, overall winner at the Killarney Looking Good Awards.

Déjà Vu For Laurels As Repaint Earns Top Prize It was a case of history repeating itself at the latest Killarney Looking Good Awards as the newly repainted Laurels scooped the top prize, 27 years after winning the same prize for their last major colour change. The popular Market Cross bar and restaurant sported its iconic white, red and green colours for over a quarter of a century so the whole town stood up and took notice when it was given a facelift earlier this summer. The new colours, grey and gold, certainly caught the eye as locals and tourists alike hailed the radical redesign. Evidently, the judges for Killarney’s

prestigious Looking Good Awards were also suitably impressed as they decided to present the overall prize to proprietors, the O’Leary family, at a ceremony in Scotts Hotel this week. It was also a very special day for Sierra Leonean asylum seeker Sherry Jimoh who was deservedly named Volunteer of the Year for 2018. Sherry, who resides in Park Lodge, arrived in Ireland from West Africa a year ago and is part of a group of women who join up with the Killarney Tidy Towns Meitheal on a weekly basis. Together they do a great job of cleaning up and brightening up our town. Irish music legend Daniel O’Donnell was on hand to present the awards, as was our own Kieran Healy. The Killarney Advertiser is a proud sponsor of Killarney Looking Good. Chairperson Yvonne Quill said the award ceremony was magic and she thanked the O’Donoghue family and Scotts Hotel for hosting the event. She also expressed her gratitude to Daly’s SuperValu who provided the food. “Daniel O’Donnell was fantastic,” she added. “He was so generous with his time and he took a real interest in everyone.”

A Weekly Round-Up Of News + Views From Kerry And Around

No Charges In Mistaken Identity Killing No criminal charges will be brought in relation to the death of a 24-yearold man shot dead in a case of mistaken identity. The Director of Public Prosecutions decision in relation to the death of Martin O’Rourke, who was shot dead in a lunchtime attack on Dublin’s Sheriff Street, was delivered at Dublin Coroner’s Court. O’Rourke was shot in the head in broad daylight on April 14, 2016. His family were not present in court but they had been made aware of the DPP’s decision, the court heard. Coroner Dr Myra Cullinane was informed that the period for an appeal of the DPP’s decision had passed and she was now in a position to set a date for a full hearing into O’Rourke’s death.

O’Rourke, a father of three with an address at Focus Ireland on George’s Quay, Dublin 7 was shot dead in a case of mistaken identity as part of the bloody Kinahan-Hutch feud. The cause of death was determined by a post-mortem conducted by State Pathologist Dr Marie Cassidy on the day of death. Dr Cassidy gave the cause of death as a gunshot wound to the head. The gunman fled the scene on a bicycle following the botched shooting. A man being investigated for the murder was discovered dead in a car in Kildare on December 2. O’Rourke had recently returned to education and had begun to develop a relationship with his children, according to reports following his death.

Trump Corner

World Media Reacts To Trump’s “Dirty War” More than 300 news outlets have launched a campaign to counter US President Donald Trump’s attacks and promote a free press. The Boston Globe made the call last week for a nationwide denouncement of the president’s “dirty war” against the media, using the hashtag #EnemyOfNone. Mr Trump has derided media reports as “fake news” and attacked journalists as “enemies of the people”. And he tweeted on Thursday: “The fake news media is the opposition party.” “It is very bad for our great country... But we are winning!” UN experts have warned that Mr Trump’s comments about the media raise the risk of violence against journalists. The Boston Globe had pledged to write an editorial “on the dangers of the administration’s assault on the press” on 16 August, and asked others to do the same.

Never fails to entertain

The initial positive response from 100 news organisations has grown closer to 350 with major US national newspapers and smaller local outlets answering the call, along with international publications like the UK newspaper The Guardian. A poll released on Tuesday by Quinnipiac University suggested that 51% of Republican voters now believed the media to be “the enemy of the people rather than an important part of democracy” and 52% of the Republican supporters polled were not concerned that Mr Trump’s criticism would lead to violence against journalists. Among all voters, 65% believe the news media to be an important part of democracy, the poll suggests. An Ipsos poll, also this month, gave similar figures. In addition it found that 23% of Republicans, and about one in eight Americans overall, believed Mr Trump should close down mainstream news outlets like CNN, the Washington Post and the New York Times.

Madrid v Barcelona In New York? La Liga To Stage Game In US

A Spanish top-flight game will be played in the US, the first time a La Liga match will take place overseas. The plan is part of a 15-year partnership between La Liga and media company Relevent, which organises the International Champions Cup, to promote football in North America. La Liga president Javier Tebas called it a “ground-breaking agreement”. The Premier League has previously discussed plans to play a ‘39th game’ outside England and Wales. The idea drew criticism from fans and the media, and executive chairman Richard Scudamore, who proposed the idea in 2008, said it could not happen “until the condi-

tions are right”. Asked when the US-based match would take place and whether it would be a regular fixture, La Liga told BBC Sport it “can not confirm the teams, match, date or season”. Tebas has previously said El Clasico, between Real Madrid and Barcelona, would “never be played outside of Spain”. But a friendly between the two clubs was played in Miami in July 2017, as part of the International Champions Cup - the first time the fixture had been played outside Spain since 1991. On Sunday, the Spanish Super Cup was played in Morocco, the first time it has been played outside Spain.

Library Book Returned 53 Years Late

Ever forget to return a library book? It’s happened to most people at one time or another, but you normally have the book return within a day or two. Well, a Tipperary library has had a book returned to them that was overdue for 19,433 days. That’s 53 years. The Tipperary County Council Library service posted on Twitter highlighting a book that was returned that had been overdue since May 30, 1965. The overdue book in question was Father Theobald Mathew by Rev. Partick Rogers which was originally published in 1943.

The fine racked up for the book’s late return was €971.65, but the library service joked that they would take €950 because they are “sound like that”. Speaking to TheJournal. ie, librarian John O’Gorman said staff had not realised it was missing as the book had been taken out under an old system. “Somebody found it while they were clearing out a house,” said Mr O’Gorman. “It’s often the case that books lie dormant for a long time, but thankfully the person spotted it and gave it back.” Mr O’Gorman said the library was happy to waive the fine.

FF Hit Out At Defence Forces Pay For Papal Visit

Fianna Fáil has hit out at plans to pay defence force members an extra €68 for 72 hours duty during the Papal visit. The party says the time has come to address the issue of core pay for troops. They are expected to be drafted into the capital from the around the country for the visit of Pope Francis. Fianna Fáil’s Defence Spokesperson, Jack Chambers, believes the extra work breaches a European directive. “As if the weakened morale regarding poor pay and conditions within the Defence Forces could take any further blow; it now emerges that members of the forces are expected to call for duty for 72 hours which is a clear breach of the working time directive. “The level of disregard and the unacceptable attitude towards these members is only compounded by this latest kick by Government to ignore the working time directive ahead of the Pope’s visit.

“Just this week we heard of members of the forces are struggling to keep food on the table. Is it any wonder that families living in the Curragh finding it hard to make ends meet when their duty is not recognised in terms of pay. “I can tell you that if members of An Garda Síochana or emergency services staff including nurses and doctors were being asked to present to work long hours in exchange for poor pay over the weekend of the Pope’s visit, there would be public outcry. “It’s as though this Government would rather ignore the key capabilities of those that are employed by the Irish Defence Forces, than recognise the level of support they provide to the public during major events such as the Pope’s visit. “We should all be sticking up for the Defence Forces in this regard and urge to Government to deliver appropriate pay and conditions for their military operations.”

Queen Of Soul Aretha Franklin Dies Aged 76 The iconic soul singer Aretha Franklin died at her home in Detroit, Michigan on Thursday. She was 76. Her publicist confirmed the news to Associated Press. It had been reported earlier this week that the soul singer was “gravely ill”. The 76-year-old battled ill health in recent years but continued to tour and record. Last year she announced plans to retire after releasing one more album. Universally acclaimed as the Queen of Soul, Franklin followed a typical path as she crossed over from singing gospel as a child before embarking on career in showbiz. What was untypical about Franklin was a powerful voice that sweetly married her gospel style with a pop sensibility, as she reinterpreted other artists’ hit songs and made them uniquely her own.

The daughter of a church minister, Franklin sang gospel at New Bethel Baptist Church in Detroit. Although she initially struggled to get a foothold in the music business, she found her natural home when she signed to Atlantic Records in 1967. Commercial and critical success followed with a cover of Otis Redding’s Respect which she turned into a feminist anthem - Carole King’s (You Make Me Feel Like) A Natural Woman, Ben E King’s Spanish Harlem and Think, which Franklin co-wrote with her then husband Ted White. Following a slump in the late 1970s, her career was revived in the 1980s when she signed to Arista records and enjoyed hits such as Jump to It and Who’s Zoomin’ Who? She also featured in the 1980 film The Blues Brothers, where she performed a rousing version of Think.

Corona Owner To Pour €3.5bn Into Weed Corona beer owner Constellation Brands is set to pour some $4bn (€3.5bn) into Canada’s top cannabis producer, Canopy Growth, in a deal marking the largest investment in the industry to date. Last year, Constellation injected $200m into Canopy in a deal to produce a non-alcoholic cannabis-based beverage. The alcohol firm wants to capitalise on the growing legalisation of the drug. On news of the deal, Canopy’s Toronto-listed stock surged 30%, while on Wall Street, Constellation’s fell 6%. The two firms said the investment would allow Canopy to expand its business reach

“in the nearly 30 countries pursuing a federally permissible medical cannabis programme”. Canopy, which has the largest legal cannabis production footprint in the world, currently produces cannabis-based oils and soft gel caps, among other products. With Constellation’s latest injection of cash, Canopy plans to expand its suite of products to include edible bars, inhalers and pre-rolled items. It also wants to develop cannabinoid-based medicines that provide a safer alternative to some mainstream treatments for pain, anxiety, sleeplessness and psoriasis.

Clodagh Joins The Team At Audiology Medical Services Audiology Medical Services are delighted to announce the addition of Clodagh Quane to their team. Clodagh is a highly qualified and dedicated audiologist, whose lovely warm manner has made her a favourite with both adults and children in Cork and Kerry. She holds a Masters in Audiology and specialises in developing audiology competencies for both adults and children, especially in the area of correct hearing aid fitting. Aftercare is particularly important to Clodagh, who is skilled in helping patients manage tinntus, vertigo and balance disorders. She is particularly interested in helping people who are suffering from tinnitus find ways of managing the condition. Education is very close to Clodagh’s

heart, so much so that her dissertation examined the experiences of deaf and hard of hearing students attending University College Cork. By conducting this research, she was able to gain valuable insight into how a hearing loss and different hearing interventions can impact the lives of students in an Irish third level education setting.

The anxious wait for Leaving Cert students is over following the release of results by the Department of Education on Wednesday. Attention now focuses on looking at the various options available to students in further and higher education. CAO – 1st Round Offers On next Monday morning, August 20 the CAO will release 1st round offers to candidates online at 6am. Minimum points required for entry to each course will be available on the CAO website from 6am. Students will have until Friday, August 24 (5.15pm) to accept their 1st round offer. Many students will receive two offers, one at level 8 and another from level 7/6, and they can accept one. Students should carefully consider their 1st round offer as they may not get a subsequent offer in the 2nd Round. Viewing of Scripts and Appeals Leaving Cert students who are unhappy with a grade and wish to view their marked exam scripts in their school must return the application forms, which is contained in their Leaving Cert results envelope, to their school by Tuesday, August 21. There is no charge for viewing the marked exam scripts. Students, along with one person of their choice, can view their scripts in school at a time allocated to them by the school during Friday and Saturday, August 31 and September 1. If students wish to appeal their grade and have it re-marked, Wednesday, September 5 (5.15pm) is the final date for receipt by the State Exams Commission of Leaving Cert appeal applications. A fee of €40 per subject applies, which is refunded in the case of an upgrade. The results of Leaving Cert appeals are released by the SEC in mid October. 2nd Round Offers Students are entitled to be offered any place that becomes available higher up your order of preference on either of the two lists (Level 8 and level 7/6). Whether you have accepted a place on another course or not is irrelevant – you will be offered the new place anyway. Applicants then have the choice to accept their 2nd round offer or to stick to what was offered in the 1st round. The CAO makes 2nd round offers available to relevant applicants online from 10am on Wednesday, August 29 and the closing date for receipt of acceptance of the 2nd round offers is Friday, August 31 (5.15pm). Final offers of places by the CAO will be made up to October 17. Deferring a place If you wish to defer an offer of a place, you do not accept your offer. Instead, you must email or write to the Admissions Office of the appropriate HEI immediately. You must give your name

Words: Niamh Dwyer

as it appears on your CAO application, quote your CAO application number and the course code of the offer you wish to defer, and set out the reason(s) for the request. Applicants must mark “DEFERRED ENTRY” clearly on the envelope or in the subject line of the email. You can also check the website of the relevant HEI to see if they have a deferral policy available online that you can refer to. The letter or email must arrive in the Admissions Office of the institution at least two days before the reply date shown on the Offer Notice. The HEI will communicate their decision to you directly. If the deferral is not granted, you may then accept the offer for the current year, providing you accept the offer by the reply date. You must send all communications about deferrals to the appropriate Admissions Office and not to CAO. Other options are available For students who don’t get any offer or don’t get an offer that they are happy with, there are alternatives. CAO courses that are not filled will be advertised on www.cao.ie under vacant places and new courses that have become available after July 1 are advertised on the college websites for direct application to the college. See college websites for details. Post-Leaving Cert Colleges are still accepting applications for their QQI Level 5 and 6 courses and they offer students a wonderful opportunity to gain a workplace recognised qualification with the option of progressing onwards to institutes of technology and universities through the Higher Education Links Scheme. For details of courses available and to apply directly to the PLC colleges see their websites. For further details on PLC colleges see www.careersportal.ie or www.qualifax.ie. Extensive opportunities exist at present in apprenticeships across many industry sectors including construction, electronics, motor, ICT, finance, insurance, engineering, hospitality and others. For further details see local and national media and www.apprenticeship.ie. The Institute of Guidance Counsellors in conjunction with the National Parents’ Council Post-Primary will provide guidance to students and parents again this year on their freephone helpline 1800 265 165 during the following hours: Friday August 17 10am-1pm Monday/Tuesday August 20/21 8am-7 pm Wednesday August 22 10am-1pm Niamh Dwyer is a guidance counsellor in Scoil Phobail Sliabh Luachra, Rathmore and is PRO of the Kerry Branch of Guidance Counsellors. Fierce Competition At Jimmy Devane Memorial Autocross

Diarmuid Lynch, David Devane, Pat O’Driscoll Winner, Tommy Daly COC and Michael O’Mahoney Rentokil Initial.

Killarney & District Motor Club held the Jimmy Devane Memorial Autocross event last Sunday, August 12. The action took place at Ballybeggan Racecourse Tralee, with over 50 competitors from all over the country taking part and driving a wide variety of cars and special buggies on the day. The event was proudly sponsored by Rentokil Initial Ireland and was marked as round seven of the Munster Autocross Championship. The weather held off and a great day’s racing was enjoyed by all. The track, set out by Clerk of the Course Tommy Daly, measured 2.2km in length and was very technical and fast, with some tight chicanes and it required some precision driving. The event was run in conjunction with Kerry Motor Club and all proceeds are going to the Costello Family Fund. There was some fierce competition amongst the top local drivers Charles O’Neill and David Fleming, both in Honda Civic’s and both from Killarney, John

Laois man Anthony Culleton was the early leader in his Semog 600 Special. On the fourth run last year’s winner Pat O’Driscoll from Clonakility pulled out all the stops, setting a scintillating time and narrowly taking the win by less than a second. Tommy Daly was the top local driver and took home the Best KDMC Award. The Fastest Novice was John O’Flaherty in his newly purchased Semog Buggy. The Best Saloon car was driven by Paul McCann from Dublin in his Ford Escort Cosworth, while Michelle Galwey captured the ladies award in her Ford KA. Jimmy’s son David Devane was on hand to present the awards at the prizegiving. The club also made a special presentation to the event secretary Norma Lucey for her outstanding work. A special thanks to all marshals, officials, competitors & everyone involved.

Organisers hailed “the best year yet” as the famous Puck Fair came to a close on Sunday night. Residents and business owners reported large crowds on each of the three days as the historic festival once again proved its worth to the local economy; it’s estimated that King Puck and his fair generate upwards of €7 million annually. The 2018 festivities got off to a sunny start on Friday with blue skies and sunshine providing the perfect backdrop for the popular summer festival. Each busy street was thronged with locals chatting, tourists browsing, endless rows of market stalls and that familiar electric atmosphere that has become synonymous with Puck Fair. From the early morning wheelings and dealings at Ire-

land’s longest-running horse fair, to the excitement and celebration surrounding the evening’s coronation parade and ceremony, this year’s Gathering Day was one to remember. While the sun took a break on day two, replaced by heavy cloud and rain, the change in weather did little to dampen high spirits in Killorglin. Another jam-packed schedule of events on ensured that visitors would once again be kept on their toes, with street entertainment, live music and more taking up every corner of the town. Another hugely successful Puck Fair was deserving of a particularly special finale, and this was provided by none other than Dancing with the Stars champ Jake Carter, who rocked the stage until the early hours of Monday morning, finishing just ahead of the celebratory fireworks display; a familiar, annual symbol that denotes the end of Puck for another year.

Improve The Appearance Of Sagging Jowls CACI Jowl Treatment The CACI Jowl Treatment improves the appearance of sagging jowls. It has been developed to specifically target muscle laxity around the jawline. It uses quad probes which emit tiny electrical impulses to lift, firm and redefine facial contours. The CACI Jowl Lift treatment is completely painless, although some clients may experience a slight tingling sensation or metallic taste, which is perfectly normal.

Carrie and Nathan Kinslow from Minnesota on their wedding day at Muckross Abbey. Pic: Katie @KHDWeddings.

CACI Hydratone Hydratone is another treatment from CACI which we have with our famous CACI facial. The Hydratone procedure takes and extra 10-15 minutes to perform yet provides immediate and intensive skin hydration and face firming. Progressive results are achieved through a course of treatments, but for optimum effect, the Hydratone treatment works spectacularly when combined with the traditional CACI non-surgical lifting technique Hydratone combines active micro current

rollers with a unique, electrically conductive gel mask that has been infused with powerful hydrating properties (collagen, hyaluronic acid, vitamin C and vitamin E). The rollers gently massage the face causing the mask to become charged so that the whole face is bathed with rejuvenating energy. The energy delivered by the rollers recharges and replenishes the bio-electrical energy within the facial muscles and in so doing helps to restore muscle tone and firmness. At the same time, the energy generated also drives the hydrating actives contained within the gel mask deep into the skin tissue. De-hydrated and sun damaged skin is immediately quenched by the hydrating action of the mask. The mask’s powerful properties also have a softening action on skin tissue that helps to plump out and smooth deep lines and wrinkles. After just 10 minutes of Hydratone treatment the face has a remarkably softer, radiant and more youthful appearance. For more information call Jill on 064 66 32966.

Garden Magic Words: Debby Looney

Your Water Feature Questions Answered This week I am following up on the article on water features as I have received many (diverse) enquiries! Is there an ideal size for a water feature? The answer is, no. It depends entirely on space, budget and manageability. A water feature can be a large pond or a small fountain. I have seen barrels being used as well as concrete and terracotta vessels. Old Belfast sinks, and even toilet cisterns can be used! Anything which does not leak is suitable, and items made from terracotta can be waterproofed using a sealant available from DIY shops. The sound of running water is always a welcome part of the feature, but many of us do not know where to start if it’s not a fountain. Running water is easy to create. You only need a pump. A small one can be purchased for around €30, which will give around a metre of rise in the water. Larger pumps giving more pressure allow for more height. The pump sits below the surface of the water and a hose or pipe leads from it to where you want the water to flow. For example, my hose runs from the pump partially around the outside of the pond where it comes out between some stones in such a way that it cannot be seen, but creates a small waterfall. I

have buried the hose, so that it can’t be seen, but also to prevent it freezing in the winter. Our pump is on a timer, even in winter, as the moving water prevents the pond from freezing, also providing water for wildlife in tough times. Having moving water also aerates the pond and oxygen is as important below the water as above it. Most pumps have a switch which regulates the flow or pressure of the water. Another concern people have is weeds and algae forming in the pond, and whether a filtration system is needed. This is a complex problem, especially if you are planning to keep fish. There are many ways to control the formation of an algal problem. Stagnant water is more prone to problems than aerated water. Ponds in the sun are also more prone to problems; keeping at least a third of the surface of the pond covered dramatically decreases algal growth. Blanketweed is by far the most common type of algae in small

ponds. It forms long, silky strands which cling to plants and the side of the pond. It is easily removed by (carefully) using a rake or a hard brush. Barley straw can be put into the pond to counteract algal growth. It comes in small ‘bales’, and works very well if it is introduced early. As it breaks down it emits hydrogen peroxide, which inhibits algal growth, but is in a low enough concentration not to affect other organisms. Ultraviolet filters and mechanical filters can also be purchased but I recommend doing your research as they can be costly and possibly inappropriate for your pond! Always avoid using tap water to top up water features as the chlorine adversely affects the balance of life in the water. For advice or garden consultations, ring 086 6088156 or email barnhillgarden@gmail.com Gardening classes will resume in September at the Community College, for details contact the college from 1st September onwards.

Bubble Car Returns As EV The cute Isetta bubble car from the 1950s is coming back as a new-age electric runabout. The style and shape of the tiny city-car has been copied by Micro, best known for its popular range of children’s scooters, for its Microlino. The EV is already past the prototype stage and the company is promising the first production cars before the end of this year. The company has already taken more than 6000 orders. It is only 2.4m long, allowing it to be ‘cross-parked’. Certified for Europe using quadricycle regulations, Micro’s work on the car has resulted in a great looking micro-machine that captures the essence of the bubble cars of the 1950s. Then, people were desperate to get driving again after WWII and there were a number of different approaches to minimalist

motoring. The original Isetta (which has no connection Micro) was produced by a motorcycle company called Iso, using a two-stroke engine in the rear and a hinged front door to carry four people. It was picked up by BMW, which fitted a 250cc four-stroke engine, and sales from 1955 to 1962 eventually topped 161,000 cars. The idea for a modern revival in the Microlino car began in 2015 when Micro pioneer Wim Ouboter and his two sons hatched a plan to create a city-car that would be eco-friendly in manufacturing and use. Micro now says the car has been certified for sale in Europe and production will begin in the final quarter of this year in northern Italy – the heart of a motorcycle-centric region known as the Motor Valley.

Bugatti Chiron Gets Sky View Dual Sunroof

Words: Cormac Casey

It always interests me on what the motoring press views as headlines and this particular one caught my attention. “The Bugatti Chiron hypercar will soon be available with the new option of a ‘Sky View’ sunroof that introduces two glass panels into the standard car’s roof.” What caught my attention is the way the information was delivered – in pure consumer information mode. The piece goes into great detail on the size, weight and benefits to the lucky owner. That lucky owner will be few, so few that one person in Bugatti could ring all the potential clients before their 11am coffee break to inform them in person of this new option. Surely it should be as simple as ticking off from an options list. So why is there a need for Bugatti to deliver this detailed press release to the greater public. A slow news day, I think not. There is always a reason.

The detailed piece continues: “A dark tint, meanwhile, prevents occupants from being dazzled by strong sunlight and is claimed to add privacy.” It is a Bugatti Chiron, privacy is not an option with paparazzi parked outside your door waiting to get a

glimpse of this rare automobile. However, the occupants largely go unnoticed which may be a problem for Bugatti. The owners of these exotic cars are used to getting attention, removing that attention is problematic. But Bugatti have been clever; the dark tint shields their identity. Well done Bugatti for caressing the competing egos of your potential clients. That is subtle, clever marketing. And the subtle caress continues. Bugatti teases us by not releasing the price of this option but leaves it to the journalist to speculate. “It’s likely to run into five figures.” But the journalist qualifies Bugatti’s shortcomings on the lack of price by continuing: “not that the typical Chiron buyer will flinch when you’re spending over €2 million on your hypercar”. Clever again, a good motoring journalist will always put value into perspective. Again, caresses the financial ego of their potential owners.

5TH ANNIVERSARY CROWLEY

Jesus came to the foot of the bed, These are the words we are sure he said, You suffered enough, take my hand, And come with me to a better land. So keep your arms around him Lord, And give him special care, Make up for what he suffered, And that seemed unfair. Please forgive a falling tear, A constant wish that he was still here, Others have lost like this we know, But he was our loved one, And we loved him so. Always in our thoughts, Forever in our hearts.

Remembering with love, joy and sorrow our beautiful son Dylan on this his 5th anniversary. As we loved you, So we miss you, In our memory you are near, Loved, remembered, longed for always, Bringing many a silent tear. Sadly missed and always in our hearts, Mom, Dad, Bryan and Emer. xxx

For this is a journey, We all must take, And each must go alone, It’s all a part of the master’s plan, A step on the road to home, When you are lonely, and sick of heart, Go to the friends we know, And bury your sorrow, In doing deeds, Miss me, but let me go. Words: Adam Moynihan Division 1: Rathmore not safe yet Reigning O’Donoghue Cup champions Rathmore have a nervy trip west on Sunday in the final round of the 2018 County League. The East Kerry club currently find themselves hovering two points above the drop zone and if results don’t go their way, they could find themselves in a relegation playoff with third-frombottom Beaufort. Glenbeigh-Glencar and John Mitchels have already been relegated. A draw against An Ghaeltacht in Gallarus would suffice for Rathmore as they look to secure their top-flight status for another year. It’s a mustwin situation for Beaufort as they face the Killarney Legion in Derreen. At the top of the table, Dr Crokes have long since confirmed their spot in the final and it looks like Kerins O’Rahilly’s will be joining them, although a couple of teams are in position to pounce should the Tralee side fall at the final hurdle. Rahilly’s host Dingle at Strand Road and a single point would be enough to confirm second place. Should they lose, however, both Templenoe (who

play St Mary’s) and An Ghaeltacht can catch them with victories. It’s not beyond the realms of possibility that all three teams could end up on 13 points, in which case a three-way playoff would be required. I doubt anyone wants that at this stage of the season. Division 2: Kilcummin on brink of promotion Second place Kilcummin are in a strong position to return to the top table of Kerry football as they prepare for their final league game of the season. The Intermediate champions, who have racked up 15 points to date, can guarantee promotion to Division 1 by defeating Kenmare at home. Castleisland Desmonds and Na Gaeil are both a point back on 14 and they need wins against Austin Stacks and Glenflesk respectively to stay in contention. Stacks will finish first regardless of what happens on Sunday. Division 3: Are Crokes’ second team set for second tier? Dr Crokes’ second string could make history this weekend by gaining promotion to Division 2 of the County

League. The B team are just outside the promotion places but with second place Brosna and third place St Senan’s facing each other in their final fixture, Crokes will be promoted if they beat Ballydonoghue in Ballydonoghue. A draw would guarantee at least a playoff. It would be a remarkable achievement for the Crokes, especially when you consider the calibre of clubs currently in Division 2. Win on Sunday and the Crokes juniors could be competing in the same league as Glenflesk, John Mitchels and Milltown/ Castlemaine in 2019. Division 4: Firies could make it an East Kerry 1, 2 & 3 Gneeveguilla and Fossa have already confirmed their promotion to Division 3 and Firies will make it an impressive 1, 2 and 3 for East Kerry if they can get over the line by beating fourth place Tarbert at home. At the other end of the table, Beale and St Michael’s-Foilmore meet in a key relegation clash with Renard also potentially in trouble should results go against them. Ballylongford and Cromane are down.

Do You Ever Get The Feeling That You’re Missing Out?

Words: Adam Moynihan I was out celebrating a friend’s birthday in a popular Killarney nightspot earlier this summer when I was approached by man who had an axe to grind. “Why don’t you give any coverage in the Advertiser to the most popular sport in Killarney?” My first thought was that I write about football all the time. Unless he was on about soccer…? But I give soccer lots of coverage as well… I was stumped. “Which sport is that?” “Hurling.” Evidently, he was drunk. He had a bit of a point though. I don’t really cover hurling in these pages, other than by sharing local photos and stories that are sent into us (via newsdesk@killarneyadvertiser.ie). The reasons are twofold. First of all, there isn’t a massive interest in hurling in Killarney. It is played and talked about but it’s very much a minority sport in this part of the world. I’m limited in the amount of sport I can cover in a given week and when it comes down to it, a lot of our readers want stories about football, soccer and basketball. As the song goes, you’ve got to give the people what they want. Secondly, I don’t know a whole pile about hurling. It’s not a sport I’ve ever played, bar a couple of PE classes and the odd puck around with the boys

out at Muckross House. I barely know the bas from the… other end of the hurley. And that’s a great pity. My friends and I often talk about it amongst ourselves. We wish we had played more of it growing up and we say how great it would be if hurling was more popular in Kerry. That’s especially true in this day and age when our other national game, football, is going through such a crisis. Attendances at last weekend’s All-Ireland semi-finals were significantly down on previous years and it’s hard to blame supporters for not showing up. How many good games of senior intercounty football have there been this year? There have certainly been more dire spectacles than great ones as defences have thrown bodies behind the ball, which in turn forces offences to be cautious, which in turn makes everybody watching sad and nostalgic. Football is supposed to be exciting. Maybe not as exciting as hurling, which is by its nature more fast-paced and high-scoring, but certainly more exciting than soccer, which is generally longer and more laborious. But the World Cup blew the Super 8s out of the water this summer. As I saw with my own eyes, there were football fans watching the World Cup in the Croke Park Hotel while Kerry played Galway across the Jones’ Road. That would

have been unthinkable in years gone by. There is something fundamentally wrong with football at the moment. The game is sick. Hurling, meanwhile, is in rude health. Attendances have been strong all season and the championship has thrown up some exhilarating battles so far, perhaps most notably the drawn match between Galway and Clare and the epic encounter between Limerick and Cork that finished 3-32 to 2-31 after extra time. When played the right way (which it often seems to be), you can’t beat the hurling for entertainment but it’s not really the same when your own team isn’t involved. I know Kerry have made great strides in recent years but they’re still some way off competing with the big boys. When you see Cork and Limerick and Galway fans going ballistic up in Semple Stadium or in Croke Park, you can’t help but feel that you’re missing out. As for Sunday’s All-Ireland final, it would be a bit brazen of me to make any bold forecasts seeing as how I’ve already admitted that I don’t know anything about the sport. I suppose from a neutral’s perspective it would be nice to see Limerick bridging the 45-year gap but I’m sure the 82,000 in attendance will get their money’s worth regardless. Prediction: Hurling to win.

Five-In-A-Row Beckons For Keane’s Minors Words: Eamonn Fitzgerald

Kerry manager Peter Keane during the All-Ireland semi-final against Monaghan at Croke Park. Pic: Brendan Moran/Sportsfile.

The elusive five in a row of All-Ireland minor football titles beckons for Peter Keane and his charges after a pulsating semi-final at Croke Park on Sunday last, where Kerry just edged out Monaghan 1-16 to 2-11. Kerry have won the minor titles for the past four years and the U-18 age group has been changed to U-17 this year. Kerry are odds on to lift the crown. Their opponents in the decider will be Galway, who defeated Meath 3-13 to 2-9 in the other semi. Kerry led by 9 points at one stage but even with such a lead Peter Keane admitted that he expected a fight back from Monaghan. “We were in a similar situation against Cork down in Tralee when they came at us,” he said. They edged out Cork by a single point on that occasion. “Funnily enough, even at 9 points, I didn’t feel comfortable,” he continued. “You might say to me, ‘but God how could you not be comfortable?’ There was a skid on the ball and there was a bit of rain there.” Kerry were leading by seven points at the three-quarter stage and going well when the game

was turned on its head. Kerry were reduced to 14 men when Conor Flannery picked up a yellow card and a black card resulting in a red card. Monaghan made full use of the extra man and scored 2-5 in the subsequent period. Dan Murphy had a great chance of a goal but he pulled his shot wide. Fair dues to Kerry they battled back to score after Swinburne pointed to put Monaghan ahead. Jack Kennelly and Paul Walsh came to the rescue with match-winning points in injury time. Kerry brought on Ruairí ó Beaglaioch in the 63rd minute and he won a great ball which Walsh converted. Ruairí was black carded shortly after that. Kerry’s outstanding forward was Dylan Geaney, brother of Conor who played such a pivotal role in the 2015 final. Dylan scored five points, three of these from play. Monaghan boss Séamus McEneaney was very disappointed, especially when they went ahead in injury time, but he was magnanimous in defeat. “We coughed up one or two balls at crucial times in that last four or five-minute period and Kerry will always punish you,” he said. Peter Keane is building up a successful managerial

portfolio which will stand him in good stead when the Kerry senior manager job will be filled.

Killarney Scratch Cup

John Murphy from Cork was a runaway winner in the Killarney Scratch Cup. It was his first such title and he did it in style. The +4 handicapper shared the lead with a 68 on Mahony’s Point. He really turned on the style on the Killeen Course where he shot a remarkable 66 giving him a 15-stroke win. His handicap now goes out to plus 5.

Kerry Ladies

No joy for the Kerry senior ladies footballers. They were well beaten by Dublin 3-19 to 1-7 in the TG4 All-Ireland quarter-final in Roscommon.

Kerry SHC semi-finals

Two nail-biting finishes in the Kerry senior hurling championship semi-finals in Tralee. Kerry star Shane Conway shot 1-14 for Lixnaw in their 1-17 win over Causeway while Ballyduff lost their crown to Kilmoyley in a tense 20 points to 19.

Jackson Hopes To Build New Life In France

Former Ireland and Ulster rugby player Paddy Jackson has said he is determined to move on with his life after securing a two-year contract with Top 14 side Perpignan. Jackson impressed on his debut in a pre-season friendly against Toulouse last week. It was his first appearance since he and teammate Stuart Olding were suspended pending their trial over the alleged rape of a student in Belfast. The pair were subsequently acquitted following a lengthy trial. Olding, meanwhile, has signed for Pro D2 side Brive.

Rodgers Accuses Boyata Of Refusing To Play

Brendan Rodgers claimed his central defender Dedryck Boyata had been fit to play despite missing Celtic’s Champions League qualifying defeat to AEK Athens in Greece. The Belgian defender was the subject of a failed £9m bid by Fulham before the English transfer window closed. His agent, Jacques Lichtenstein, was quoted this week saying that as his client is in the final year of his contract, he could not risk playing when not 100%. “My concentration until I get back is only with the players that are here,” Rodgers said. “But yes, Dedryck would have been fit to play.” Celtic failed to qualify for the Champions League

proper following a 2-1 defeat in the Greek capital. The Scottish champions drew the first leg 1-1 in Celtic Park and needed a positive result on Tuesday night but they were behind within 6 minutes, Rodrigo Galo giving the hosts the lead. Livaja doubled AEK’s advantage within five minutes of the restart and although Scott Sinclair pulled one back in the 78th minute, Brendan Rodgers’ side were ultimately unable to find an equaliser.

Woods Just Happy To Be In Contention

Brooks Koepka lifted the Wanamaker Trophy at Bellerive but attention was stolen by a resurgent Tiger Woods, who finished two shots off the lead in second. Eleven months since the 14-times major champion admitted he “didn’t know what the future holds” amid troublesome recovery from a fourth back surgery, Woods has made meaningful challenges for the Open and US PGA. “I didn’t even know if I was going to play golf again,” Woods said. “I didn’t know what my schedule would be. I didn’t know how many tournaments I would play this year or if I would even play. So each tournament brought about its own challenges.” Woods is widely expected to be selected as a wildcard pick for this year’s US Ryder Cup team, marking a further nod towards the scale of his comeback.

Galway v Limerick All-Ireland Hurling Final Sunday at 2.15pm (RTÉ 2)

I doubt you’ll need any reminder for this one. Hurling has taken over the airwaves in a big way this summer (see Sport P2) and another classic is on the cards on Sunday. Will Galway go back-to-back? Or can John Kiely’s side cause an upset and bring Liam McCarthy back to Limerick for the first time since 1973? Whatever happens, it’s bound to be good value.

Play The Toughest Journey thetoughestjourneygame.com (AIB)

You might have noticed AIB’s brilliant 90s-video-game-inspired ad on TV over the summer. I don’t get excited about commercials too often but it’s really cool to see Gaelic football portrayed in a retro 16-bit computer game. The good news is that you can actually play The Toughest Journey on your phone or laptop. The gameplay is fairly rudimentary but taking your player from club training to Croke Park is good fun (*this is genuinely not an ad*).

F1 On Summer Break! Motorsport

WRC

Even though F1 is on summer break, it still delivers big headlines. Retirements, takeovers and a surprise driver switch add up to an exciting silly season. The latest headline was that two-time F1 champion Fernando Alonso announced his retirement from F1 this week. He’s raced in F1 for 17 years but Alonso has confirmed that he won’t be on the F1 grid in 2019. In a statement issued on Tuesday, McLaren announced that the double world champion will not race for them next year – though the 37-year-old did hint that he may return to the squad in the future. During his remarkable F1 career, Alonso has amassed 32 wins, 22 pole positions and 97 podiums to date, while his 302 Grand Prix starts place him fourth on the all-time list. Beyond his two titles – achieved in 2005 and 2006 – the Spaniard has been championship runner-up three times. Alonso hasn’t revealed yet where he will drive next year.

The next question is who is going to replace him at McLaren. The surprise move by Danny Ricciardo from RedBull to Renault, Alonso’s departure and the recent ownership change at Force India has blown the driver market wide open in the midfield teams. The F1 paddock is still in shock at Danny Ricciardo’s move to Renault next year, so much so that when he announced it to his RedBull boss, Christian Horner, Horner admitted that he thought it was a joke at first. Kimi Raikkonen’s Ferrari contract ends at the end of the year leaving seats available in two of the top three teams. Further on down the paddock, Force India’s rescue by billionaire Laurence Stroll, father of William’s driver, Lance Stroll has added to the silly season. Stroll is financially backing William’s and now with his own team that will most certainly change. Silly season F1 is well and truly in overdrive. Some break…

Rally Germany Will Offer Level Playing Field

Rally Germany this weekend is round 9 on the WRC calendar. Generally considered to be three rallies in one, crews will face narrow country lanes, access tracks that zig-zag through the Mosel vineyards and roads lined with huge concrete blocks called hinkelsteins in the Baumholder military training area. In addition to the fearsome hinkelsteins punishing anyone who runs slightly off line, crews regularly leap 40m from the famous Gina jump, making this a must-visit spot for spectators. Thierry Neuville holds a 21-point advantage over current WRC champion Sebastian Ogier with Finnish winner Ott Tanak in third a further

Rugby News ... Words: Liam Murphy

World Rugby has announced that Ronan O’Gara will be inducted to the World Rugby Hall of Fame at a special function in London on September 12. The ex-Munster fly-half has seen considerable success with his province, winning two Heineken Cups and four Pro12s. He also won the 6 Nations and Grand Slam with Ireland in 2009 and travelled with the British and Irish Lions on three tours (2001, 2005 and 2009). As a coach he has seen success at Racing 92 winning the Top 14 in 2014 and most recently at the Crusaders in New Zealand who retained their Super Rugby crown only a few weeks ago. ROG is truly worthy of being inducted into the Hall or Fame. The Corkman will be the 142nd inductee. In other news the rugby pre-season picked up a gear last weekend with Connacht taking on Brive in France.

25 points behind. Neuville has been a picture of consistency this year scoring points in every round so far with both he and Ogier winning three rounds each. However, Ogier’s retirement in Portugal dented his hopes of reducing Neuville’s lead. The asphalt roads in Germany will offer a level playing field for the competitors where road position isn’t a factor. However, that will bring other drivers into the mix. Tanak will be on a high after his win last time out. Mads Osberg and a much-improved Citroen car will be there and Ireland’s Craig Breen in the sister car will be hoping for better luck than recent outings.

O’Gara Inducted Into Rugby’s Hall Of Fame Winger Cian Kelleher bagged a hattrick earning the province a 33-24 points win. However, the headlines went to a returning Stuart Olding who played his first competitive match since the start of last season due to being suspended by the IRFU over the high profile Belfast rape trial. Munster take on London Irish tonight at Musgrave Park in Cork in their first pre-season fixture. This makes for an interesting match as it sees Declan Kidney return to competitive action as coach with his new charges. Best of luck to both teams and here’s hoping for a good run for Munster this season. Munster welcome English Premiership runners-up Exeter Chiefs to Musgrave Park on August 24 and the Ospreys in the first Pro14 match the following week. It will be great to see rugby action once again after the quiet summer.

Dr Crokes Club

County League Round 11. Dr Crokes 2-19 Spa 2-10. Played in Lewis Road on Thursday 9th of August. This was a very competitive game and a good work out for the forthcoming County Championship. Points were exchanged on a few occasions in the first quarter at the end of which we led 0-4 to 0-2. A goal from a penalty by Spa at the beginning of the second quarter put them a point in front. We got well on top for the next ten minutes and sent over six points without reply. A goal by our opponents in the 29th minute put just two points between the teams but we had the last score of the half, a point for a half time lead of 0-11 to 2-2. A goal by Jordan Kiely and a point by Alan O’Sullivan at the start of the second half put us seven points in front. Our opponents then had a good period of play and had three unanswered points to reduce our lead to four points. We had the next three points of the game but our opponents outscored us three points to one as we entered the last quarter. This left us with a five point lead but a goal by David Shaw and two further points by Colm Cooper and Brian

17.08.18

Looney sent the teams into injury time with the Home team ten points clear. Spa outscored us two points to one in this added time. This left us winners on a score of 2-19 to 2-10. The defining moments of the game for us were our two second half goals and two outstanding saves by our goalkeeper Shane Murphy, both in the second half as well. This leaves us unbeaten in County League, Divison 1, 2018 with 10 wins and 1 draw. It also gives us a home venue for the final.

Fossa GAA

MINORS: The Fossa minors recorded a good win over Beaufort in the East Kerry minor league. The final score was Fossa 7-10, Beaufort 5-08. U16 CO LEAGUE DIV 4 SEMI FINAL: Fossa 4-13, Ballyduff 4-10. It was hard to see Fossa winning this one, five minutes into the second half they were 7 points down and looked well beaten. However, this is the joys of under age football, pure, raw and totally entertaining. The game started brightly with both teams exchanging points, Fossa’s scores coming from the accurate boot of Emmett O’Shea and a fine point by Ruairi Doyle after a great run. Both teams exchanged scores but really Ballyduff were in control and left a multitude of scores behind them. Ballyduff stuck their first for goal after a super run from Kevin Golding saw his shot stopped brilliantly by Kelan O’Brien but the Fossa stopper had no luck on the rebound as the ball fell to the Ballyduff corner forward and he buried it. Ballyduff then got another goal and were in total control at this stage. Half time score was Fossa 0-5, Ballyduff 2-5. The second half started with another Ballyduff point which saw the lead stretch to 7 but Colm Talbot in the middle of the field took control fielding massive balls and setting up attack after attack. But for every attack you need a finisher and Fossa’s Emmett O’Shea is surely one of the best around. He scored some spectacular scores in this comeback, finishing with 2-8, 2-7 from play, Harry Buckley

1-2, Ruairi Doyle 1-1 and Rian Colleran with 2 points completed the scoring and this remarkable comeback. Fossa are now in the final v Ballymac and we wish the team all the best in the final. U-11 BOYS EAST KERRY LEAGUE: Fossa: 5-18 Killarney Legion 5-14. U-13 GIRLS CHAMPIONSHIP: Well done to our girls who secured a great win over Kerins O’Rahillys in the Championship semifinal on Friday on a scoreline of 4-09 to 3-06.

A Sean Moynihan goal after 20 mins settled the team and they went on to take control for the remainder of the game and qualified for the final against either Firies or Dr Crokes. Date yet to be confirmed.

CONGRATULATIONS: Well done to Paul O’ Shea on his man of the match performance on Sunday in Croke Park. CREDIT UNION CO LEAGUE: Our seniors are away to Kenmare on Sunday next at 1pm in the final round of the Co League. A victory here would ensure promotion to Div 1 for the coming year.

Killarney Legion

14 EAST KERRY FINAL: Killarney Legion 5-20 Kilcummin 5-10. These two sides served up as entertaining a game as one could have wished for with the Legion ultimately getting the better of a determined Kilcummin squad to take the title. A flying start which saw goals from Connor Gammel, Matthew Horgan, and Eoghan Crowley gave the green and whites a solid platform and it seemed that they would swamp the opposition but Kilcummin to their credit rallied well and duly replied with 2-4 to leave the score at the break Killarney Legion 4-9 Kilcummin 2-6. Having upped their game Kilcummin came out in determined fashion and hit some early points but another Sam Benson goal bolstered the Legion and they gradually pulled away with points from Gammell, Caelan Sheahan, Crowley and Matthew Horgan. A fine performance by a squad that augurs well for the future with the players showing a great command of the basic skills -undoubtedly a result of the Saturday Academy. Well done to one and all. KERRY MINORS: Congratulations to Peter Keane and his squad who kept the Kerry flag in Croke Park when they overcame adversity to qualify for the

Sport

final once more. Typical of Peters sides organised, composed and talented they played a lovely brand of football to get over the tough challenge laid down by Monaghan. Great performance by our own Darragh Lyne - who but for a tremendous save by the goalkeeper would have had a contender for one of the goals of the season. Well done also to Kieran O Donoghue who also caught the eye on his introduction. LOTTO: Results of draw held Monday 6th August - winning no’s - 6,9,16,18. No winner. Jackpot carried forward €11,700. FIXTURE: Co.league, final round - Killarney Legion V Beaufort, Derreen 1p.m. Sunday 19th Aug.
