"I've never seen as much demand" Volunteers under pressure as they help over 200 local families | By Michelle Crean Increasing energy costs and sharp hikes in rent has driven more and more people into the poverty trap this year than ever before according to a local charity - who are appealing for public support. Lone parents - even those who are working - are making up the bulk of those seeking help as they struggle to pay for rising electricity and heating bills - before they can purchase toys or put food on the table this Christmas. Breda Dwyer, Area President of the Killarney St Vincent de Paul Conference, says she is shocked with the increase this year. Currently volunteers are putting together food boxes, and are giving vouchers for toys and fuel, with over 200 local families and vulnerable people being looked after so far this Christmas. "It's shocking and we're very concerned for them," Breda told the Killarney Advertiser. "We find this year lone mothers or parents - even those who are working - are struggling because everything has increased. Rents are from €800 a month,

APPEAL: Volunteers with St Vincent de Paul Killarney are appealing to the community to donate what they can to help locals in need this Christmas. even people living on their own pay up to €1,000. It's busier with COVID, people are finding it harder with the extra costs of coal, electricity and oil. Some people in older apartments with poor insulation are using electric heaters. They are pleading with us to come up to them so that they can buy toys. I'm in my 11th year and I've never seen as much demand as this year." Breda and her team of volunteers are busy buying and packing the food as well as vouchers to give to those most in

need. However, they are appealing to the community to drop in what they can so that no one goes without. "We'd be grateful for any help," Breda said. Tonight (Friday) The Late Late Show will also highlight the remarkable work of the St Vincent de Paul Annual Appeal. Anyone who needs assistance over the coming days or weeks can drop in to the St Vincent de Paul shop on Beech Road or call 064 66 22668.

Selina makes history in new football role | By Sean Moriarty Killarney Legion’s Selina Looney has made history this week by becoming the first female chairperson of Kerry Ladies Football Association and not only that but the youngest Association chair in the country. Following Dr Crokes Pat O’Sullivan’s election as the chair of the Kerry GAA County Board, it marks the first time that both of the county’s GAA boards are led by people from the same town. Selina (28) brings a wealth of experience to her new role. She recently stepped down as the chair of the Legion Ladies Club in anticipation of being elected at the county AGM. During her time with Legion she successfully aligned both the ladies’ and men's arms of the club. Legion became the first GAA club in the country to have a universal constitution for both the men and

women sides of the club. She has also worked at committee level for the Kerry LGFA and took charge of fixtures in her time there. She identified the need for underage girls football, particularly at Minor level and was instrumental in creating District Leagues for Under 17

and Under 18 girls. She also created a non-county player’s league meaning that Ladies football could continue in Kerry even if the county team was playing at national level. She replaced outgoing chairperson Sean Walsh at Tuesday night's AGM.

Kerry remains a top staycation destination | By Sean Moriarty Several different reports published by banks, tourism bodies and international media have revealed that Kerry remains as the market leader in domestic tourism. A report by Allied Irish Banks (AIB) shows that Kerry was the top county for staycations by visitor spend this summer. The bank reported that over 55 million transactions were processed in Kerry during the summer months, more than any other county and ahead of all Irish cities. This is confirmed by a Kerry Tourism Industry Federation visitor survey where a third of visitors indicated that they planned to spend up to €300 per day during their stay. The Irish Hotels Federation (IHF) also reported that Kerry had an average occupancy rate of 76% - higher than the national average of 62%. On the international front, CNN Travel named Kenmare in their list of Europe’s most beautiful towns and Kerry was ranked 13th in the 2021 Global Sustainability Index Awards. “It is encouraging to see the positive sentiment from visitors to Kerry this summer as it has been such a challenging time for the industry in Kerry,” Patrick O’Donoghue, Chair of the KTIF Marketing Group and CEO of the Gleneagle Group, said. “One of the main positives from this is that the level of Irish tourists in the county has seen huge growth and are returning a few times in the year. We are aware 2022 will be our most challenging year with many travelling abroad for the first time in two years. However, we hope to build on the positive sentiment built up over the past two years and have a wonderful tourism product in Kerry with so much to see and do all year round.”

“I am honoured and privileged to take this position,” the Muckross native told the Killarney Advertiser. “Sean will leave a lasting legacy and I have very big shoes to fill. I am extremely grateful for all Sean has done for the Association.” Eddie Sheehy of Tralee club Na Gael is the new vice chairperson.

Geraldine is no longer at your service For almost four decades Geraldine Tangney has been one of the friendly faces in the Gleneagle Hotel but this week she decided to hang up her uniform. | By Michelle Crean It was an emotional day on Tuesday for the Duty Manager from Ballyspillane as she bid farewell to her colleagues and bosses after a wonderful career after 39 years there. Geraldine started in the Gleneagle Hotel in 1982 first as a waitress before working her way up through to management. "It was very emotional, a bit nostalgic," Geraldine said when speaking to the Killarney Advertiser this week. "I was talking about it [retirement] for a while. It didn't even feel like 39 years. It hit me really for the last time crossing the car park going in to work on Tuesday." Geraldine was 24 when she started her career in hospitality and has been behind many of the big events in the hotel

over the decades including AIMS which would have crowds of over one thousand to serve over four days. She was also delighted to end her career serving President Michael D. Higgins after a recent stay at the hotel. She said she has seen many changes during this time as the hotel grew. She also worked for four generations of the O'Donoghues, first with Mrs Sheila O'Donoghue, Maurice and Margaret, Patrick and Eileen, and more recently their son Peter. "I worked with four generations of O'Donoghues, they are a lovely crowd. I saw the INEC being built, and I have a lot of fond memories of the people I would have worked with." One of her colleagues she'll miss - but will see often is Maura O'Connor, who also has 39 years service with the hotel.

Geraldine is pictured with her life-long friends, Patrick O'Donoghue (CEO Gleneagle Hotel Group), Noreen O'Gorman, Maura O'Connor, John Drummond (Executive Chef Gleneagle Group), and Caroline Papin. Being retired means the 63-year-old will now have more time with her partner Ger, as well as a chance to visit her children and grandchildren more often including her son Bryan in Sydney and his two children, her daughter Valerie and grandchildren in New York, and

she's very excited for the birth of her eight grandchild in Barraduff which her son Ivan and his wife are expecting any day now. "I did the Ring of Kerry many times as well and I still have the bike so I might do that again," she said.

€84k approved to develop local sensory garden | By Sean Moriarty

A new state-of-the-art sensory garden will now be added at the Old Monastery after over €84,000 funding was approved this week. Service users with Kerry Parents and Friends Association (KP&F) on Port Road will experience the amazing benefits of sight, smell, touch, taste and sound once the new facility is complete. The Killarney charity will receive €84,292 from the Strengthening Disability Services Fund announced by Minister of State for Disabilities, Anne Rabbitte TD, earlier this week. KP&F is one of 65 similar organisations across the country to receive a portion of the €1 million once-off fund. The plants and the materials for sensory

gardens are specifically chosen to stimulate the senses of sight, smell, touch, taste and sound inducing a sense of relaxation and stress reduction and improved physical, mental and emotional well-being. “We are delighted with our successful application for a grant towards a sensory garden at the Old Monastery,” Marie Linehan, Chief Executive of KP&F, told the Killarney Advertiser. “This is a very welcome development as this sensory garden will provide so many benefits to the people we support, more especially now during the COVID-19 pandemic. We intend to develop other sensory gardens at our properties around the county also with the help of good people in our local communities. We are grateful for this support and look forward to working on these plans in 2022.”

Glenflesk GAA Club has lead the tributes to popular Killarney businessman JJ O'Donoghue who passed away on Sunday last whilst abroad. JJ, Dunboy House, Countess Road, was born and reared in Clonkeen Post Office the eldest of a great sporting family, and was an outstanding athlete and footballer. He was on the Glenflesk team that won the U16 county final in 1969, the first time this competition was held. He was left half forward in 1970 (September 20) scoring 1 08 in the East Kerry Minor Final when Glenflesk defeated Gneeveguilla. He also won a Junior County medal in 1970 when Glenflesk defeated Sneem in the final. “Our community was shocked and saddened as the news came through of his unexpected death,” Seamus Healy from Glenflesk GAA said. “Condolences to JJ’s family and may his gentle soul rest in peace.” As well as his success on the playing field JJ was a popular businessman in Killarney town centre. He ran the Nu-Era Health Store on Plunkett St. His first health store opened in the New St Shopping Centre

and before that he ran JJ’s bar on Main St. JJ will be lovingly remembered by his children Pam, Padraig, Valerie, Grace and Rachel, and their mother Margaret. He was an adoring grandfather to Frankie, Lily-Rose, Amelia and Hope. His life was celebrated at St Mary’s Cathedral on Sunday last ahead of cremation in the Island Crematorium, Cork on Monday.

Street Orienteering returns to town

Orienteering is a sport for all ages - and it's returning to the streets of Killarney this Sunday - promising fun as participants try to solve the clues! | By Sean Moriarty

Kerry Orienteering will host the festive street event, their second such event after the success of the summer meeting encouraged them to create a similar format as their traditional pre-Christmas outing. Over 200 people took part in the summer competition and the club regularly attracts over 100 participants to their Sunday morning races in the National Park. Three different courses are on offer to suit all abilities including family groups.

It is being billed as a ‘Come and Try It’ style event so newcomers are particularly welcome. “You could push a buggy on the easier course,” organiser Brendan O’Brien told the Killarney Advertiser. “We are using a new section of the map, starting from the library car park. We will take people up by Fitzgerald Stadium. We don’t want to be in the town centre with too many people as others are trying to do their Christmas shopping.” Participants can enter on the day or pre-enter at www.orienteering.ie/fixtures/killarney-5/.

Congrats to newlyweds Colm and Céitilís Our sincere congratulations to newlyweds Colm ‘Gooch’ Cooper and his bride Céitilís Ní Bheaglaoich who were married in Dingle on Saturday. Gooch posted this image to his Twitter account this week captioning it “What a weekend”. And indeed what a weekend it was….. as the five-time All-Ireland winning forward was back on the pitch in Fitzgerald Stadium the following day as selector with Dr Crokes for the 2020 East Kerry SFC (O'Donoghue Cup) final against Spa!

It was a special occasion as it was the 20th year Leaving Certificate students from St Brendan’s College have been carol singing for charity at Market Cross. And such was the generosity of the public that the boys raised €2,255. Each year, since 2001, the students and one of the college’s teachers, Paul Barden, organise a Christmas Carol session and bucket collection as a fundraiser for St Vincent de Paul. Their day began at St Columbanus’ Nursing Home but COVID-19 restrictions

meant they had to sing in the windows to the residents rather stage an indoor concert. At lunch time they took over the Market Cross and entertained locals and visitors with an-hour long performance. “Each year we raise at least €1,000 and the money always goes to St Vincent de Paul,” Mr Barden, who is one of the school’s Irish and Religion teachers, explained to the Killarney Advertiser. “I am lucky to have some of the students who performed with Liam O’Connor last week – I need that extra talent to make it work as I have none.” Afterwards the students attended the college’s annual Christmas dinner. Each student paid €10 for the dinner and this money will be donated to families connected with the school who have suffered bereavements this year.

Comedian regrets verbal attack on local photographer | By Sean Moriarty Scottish comedian Billy Connolly who launched an expletive filled rant at a local photographer has said this week that he regrets his actions almost 10 years after the incident. Connolly stated during a Facebook live chat that he wants to meet Valerie O’Sullivan and apologise to her after he verbally abused her during his live 2013 performance at the INEC. The highly respected Woodlawn photographer was working at the show when Connolly launched his attack. The Facebook Live event was organised by booksellers Waterstones to promote Connolly’s new book ‘Windswept and Interesting’, and this is where the 79-yearold told the online audience of his deep

regret. “I attacked her 10 times more severely than I should have. I don’t even know if she went off, but I was wild and the atmosphere got icy. “I’ve regretted it deeply ever since. I meant to apologise to her, I couldn’t find her. The papers in Ireland all attacked me for it cause I was swearing and the particular swear words I was using. I’d love to meet her and apologise to her for it. I’d love to do the show again and do it right.” The award-winning and much-loved Killarney photographer declined to comment on Connolly’s latest remarks. At the time Patrick O’Donoghue of the Gleneagle Hotel said: “The numerous messages of goodwill and support that we have received is testament to the high regard in which she is held within the local community.”

Davena's book to help children's cancer charity | By Michelle Crean A local woman's beautifully written book in memory of a 21-month-old little boy has been released just in time for Christmas. The charming book, 'Little Star Lost', was written by Davena O’Neill, originally from Park Road but now living in Abbeydorney. The story came about in October last year after Davena entered a writing

Kind-hearted Faha children donate to charity

A Kerry charity received an early Christmas present last week when the big-hearted children of Faha National School presented them with a cheque for €400. The children decided to support Recovery Haven Kerry last October by holding a Hallowe'en fancy dress in the school, with each pupil making a donation. On Friday last, the children welcomed Sharon Villa and Patricia Tyther from the cancer support charity to the school where they were delighted to present them with the €400 they raised from the event. Thanking the children for their incredible efforts, Recovery Haven Kerry’s PR & Marketing officer, Marisa Reidy, said

they were a credit to their families and school. “There are so many deserving charities who could benefit from such a lovely gesture, so we are honoured that the children, as well as staff and management, decided to choose Recovery Haven for this particular event,” she said. “These wonderful children should be very proud of the money they raised and we assure them that it will all go towards providing much-needed care for cancer patients across the county.”

Airport preparing to welcome people home for Christmas | By Sean Moriarty Kerry Airport has issued several guidelines for passengers ahead of the anticipated Christmas rush - warning of potential delays as a result of larger numbers flying and pandemic related restrictions. Christmas is traditionally a very busy time at Kerry Airport with people returning to Kerry from London, Manchester, Germany and Dublin to celebrate the festive season at home. People coming from

even further afield use the Dublin-Kerry connecting flight. “Passengers are reminded to allow additional time for their journeys due to the seasonally longer queues which have been adversely impacted by COVID-19 restrictions,” said Kerry Airport CEO, John Mulhern. “Kerry Airport COVID-19 protocols remain in place and only passengers are permitted into the Terminal building. The management, staff and board at Kerry Airport wish everyone a Happy Christmas and New Year.”

competition, 'A Story for Daniel', which raised funds in memory of Daniel Farbrace, a 21-month-old little boy, who died from cancer. Featuring little Star who falls from the night sky and meets wonderful woodland creatures to help him get back home, it explores the themes of friendship, kindness and loss. "It is a gentle introduction to the topic of grief, and how those we love never truly leave us," Davena told the Killarney Advertiser. Daniel’s parents chose 'Little Star Lost' as the winner, and Davena set out to turn the story into a picture book to raise money for Daniel’s Brighter Future Fund in Great Ormond Street Hospital. The fund goes towards helping families while caring for a sick child, and cancer research. All profits from book sales go to the charity. "Wicklow based artist, Evelyn Vazquez, generously donated her time and talent illustrating the book, bringing the story to life, and Killarney man Martin O’Brien graciously put it all together." The book is available to buy at Polymath’s Bookstore Tralee, on Amazon as a paperback and on Kindle. Davena can also be contacted on davena4abbey@ gmail.com. "This has been a labour of love, in memory of a precious little boy, and to raise funds for a very worthy cause. All support is greatly appreciated."

Barraduff locals to take on charity spin A number of Barraduff locals have set the wheels in motion to raise funds for a very worthy charity. | By Michelle Crean They are planning to get on their bikes after Christmas for a spinning fundraiser, which takes place on Thursday, December 30 in Barraduff Community Centre in aid of the Kevin Bell Repatriation Trust (KBRT). It is being organised by Jenny McCarthy and Declan O'Donoghue of Triumph Coaching, along with the support of the Barraduff Community Field Organisation. The Kevin Bell Repatriation Trust aims to alleviate the financial hardship of bereaved families repatriating the body or bodies of loved ones who have died abroad in sudden or tragic circumstances back to Ireland. "The event itself will see six 40 minutes spinning classes being held with all donations on the day going towards this wonderful charity," Jenny said. "The reward for those who wish to partic-

ipate will not only be supporting a worthy cause but tea, cakes, and lots of treats will be available afterwards." A coffee morning is also being organised as part of the fundraiser, open to every-

one that morning – not just spinners! "Our key concern is that participants and supporters on the day stay as safe as possible. We will be adhering strictly to Government guidelines and all necessary

precautions will be in place throughout the venue," she added. The Kevin Bell Repatriation Trust was founded in 2013 following the tragic death of Kevin Bell, aged 26 years, in New York. Repatriation can cost up to £12,000 depending on the circumstances of the death, local charges, and hospital release costs. “KBRT have now repatriated 1,195 loved ones to their families in Ireland, with 32 of those being to Kerry alone, from countries worldwide such as Australia, Argentina, South Korea, USA, Canada, Ecuador, Cambodia, India, Uganda to name just a few. The Trust repatriates approximately 15-20 loved ones back to Ireland per month. We are asking as many people as possible to participate in this fun event to help raise funds for this charity which has touched so many people’s lives. If you can’t make the event itself there is an opportunity to donate via the iDonate fundraising page: 'JenniferMcCarthy', and all contributions are gladly welcome." Spinning sessions are running from 9am to 1.30pm on the day and if you’d like to book please contact Jenny on 086 1037496 or Declan on 087 6945188.

DONATION: Transition Year students from Killarney Community College raised almost €1,000 to help those in need this Christmas.

Almost €1,000 raised for needy families | By Michelle Crean Students goodwill and generosity - which saw them raise almost €1,000 - will positively change the way some local families celebrate Christmas next week. As it is the time of year for goodwill and generosity the Transition Year students from Killarney Community College called on the help of fellow students, their families and staff in the school to donate so that those in need can have a happy Christmas. Arranging two fundraisers brought in the massive amount of funding which will now be used to make up food hampers for local families experiencing fi-

nancial hardship. On December 3, the Transition Year students raised an amazing €552 by hosting a bake sale in the school. On December 9, not letting Storm Barra get in the way of selling tickets, the Transition Years also held a fantastic raffle. Another €416 was raised for the Killarney Lions Club. There were 11 hampers raffled, put together by teachers and students. "This money will help the club create food hampers for families in need here in the Killarney area this Christmas," Teacher Lorraine Crowley, who organised the appeal said. "Food boxes were also donated as part of the appeal."

Fexco announced yesterday (Thursday) that it was actively recruiting for roles in areas including software engineering, technology, sales, marketing, and customer success. This recovery is attributable to the hard work and resilience of our employees across the globe and gives us a very optimistic outlook for 2022,” Managing Director of Fexco Group, Neil Hosty, said. “Fexco is a proud and strong Irish family-owned business with global impact celebrating its 40th anniversary this year.”

Gleneagle are best-in-class with world recognised certification Staff at the Gleneagle Group, who are continuously setting the bar high when it comes to customer experience have announced that they have achieved ISO standards across four areas of operation. ISO is one of the most rigorous and well-regarded standards in the world and the Gleneagle has been awarded ISO 9001 quality management system, ISO 14001 environmental management, ISO 45001 occupational health and safety, and ISO 20121 sustainable events. Companies gain certification by im-

plementing policies, procedures and systems that follow and meet these rigorous standards. Attaining the ISO standards means The Gleneagle Group demonstrates best-in-class services in its management systems. The procedure to become certified involved extensive preparation, evalua-

tion and documentation of processes across all departments. Consultant advisor Donal Flannery of Flannery Health and Safety assisted in this process. The Gleneagle Group then underwent a series of external audits, carried out by Management Systems Certification Limited, and will continue to be assessed to monitor compliance. The Gleneagle INEC Arena is the first event venue in Ireland that is certified to ISO 20121 sustainable events standards. “Meeting the specific requirements

needed for these standards highlights our commitment to best-in-class standards," Patrick O’Donoghue, CEO of The Gleneagle Group, speaking about the announcement, said. "It signifies that we operate efficiently and effectively and that we provide the highest quality of services to our customers, clients and our employees. Four public car chargers is "not good enough" - says councillor | By Sean Moriarty There are only four publicly owned electric car chargers in Killarney according to new figures released by Kerry County Council.

Moll’s Gap road to remain closed until next week | By Sean Moriarty The Moll’s Gap road will remain closed to traffic until next Thursday (December 23). Kerry County Council has closed the road to allow crews carry out essential maintenance work at the Newfoundland Bay Tunnel. As a result the N71 National Secondary Road (Killarney to Molls Gap Road) will

close each day including this Saturday and Sunday between the entrance to Dinis Cottage and Molls Gap from 8am until 5.30pm. An alternative route via Kilgarvan is signposted. The purpose of the road closure is to facilitate repairs and works at KY-N71005.00. An alternative route will be clearly signposted.

There are two units in the Glebe car park and two more in the Tesco car park on New St. Killarney Municipal District councillor Brendan Cronin raised the issue at Monday’s monthly meeting of Kerry County Council. The Council also revealed that there are just four charging points on the entire Ring of Kerry route – two each in Cahersiveen and Sneem. “This is not good enough,” Cronin told the Killarney Advertiser. “The Govern-

ment are promoting electric cars at every turn but these charge points need to be easily accessible – the ability to re-charge is very limited.” There are several privately owned charge points in Killarney. Many of them are situated in garages and existing petrol stations. Many of Killarney’s hotels have charging points too but many are restricted for use by guests only. The most-recent hotel to add charging facilities is the Cahernane Hotel. This week the hotel announced the installation of two Tesla chargers and one universal charger at its Muckross Road premises. They are located in the car park at the entrance to the Coach House. All three chargers are complimentary for hotel residents and are available 24 hours per day.

Alana to take on All-Ireland title fight this weekend A young Killarney girl who has dreams of being the next Katie Taylor has qualified for an Irish boxing final in Dublin tomorrow (Saturday). | By Michelle Crean Alana O'Brien (13) from Hazelwood Drive in Ballyspillane, who took up boxing just three years ago, hopes to become the boxing champion of Ireland by bringing the Irish title back to Killarney. Alana is daughter of Daniel and Michelle O'Brien who are temporarily living in Kildare. She currently trains with Setanta Boxing Club, but her parents plan to bring her home to celebrate her achievements so far. "She started aged 10 in Tralee Boxing Club," her dad Daniel told the Killarney Advertiser. "I brought her to see Katie Taylor in The Brandon Hotel in Tralee. Alana played with Crokes and Celtic but then set her heart on boxing. "She's well able for it, and she's gotten so much confidence from it. She won a county title with Tralee Boxing Club but never got the chance with the pandemic." Alana, who attended St Oliver's NS and Killarney Community College before their move to Kildare, is so dedicated to her

New playground signage will promote inclusion for all | By Sean Moriarty Kerry County Council is to install special communication boards in playgrounds around the county to promote inclusion and better communication between non-verbal children and families. TITLE FIGHT: Alana O'Brien (13) from Hazelwood Drive is hoping to bring an Irish boxing title back to Killarney.

sport that she trains five nights a week. Alana will join Ali Gorman and Elma Barry in the finals in Drimnagh Boxing Club. "It's an All-Ireland title if she wins. She hopes to bring it back to Killarney and we plan on heading home to Killarney after. She's looking forward to it and is full of confidence."

The Council has worked with national charity ‘Finding Charlie's Voice’ which helps raise awareness around verbal dyspraxia and supports families of children that have been diagnosed with the condition. Mayor of Killarney, Cllr Marie Moloney, raised the issue at Monday’s Kerry County Council meeting. She was informed at the meeting that the Council has secured funding from the Healthy Ireland Fund, and that the final

communication board design has been completed. The signs are currently being manufactured with rollout to all 41 public playgrounds in Kerry by the end of the year. “I very much welcome the answer received as this is a vital way of non-verbal children communicating on what they want to do in the playgrounds,” Cllr Moloney told the Killarney Advertiser. “It is incumbent of us to do whatever we can to make life easier for children with disabilities and for their parents. Sometimes when we table motions they have to be referred to the Minister and the Department but this is something we as a Council can do for ourselves and I am delighted that Kerry County Council has stepped up to the mark and were forthcoming in providing these communication boards.”

Safety first for school pupils Two Killarney school children have had their art work included in the newly published 2022 Road Safety Calendar. Kerry County Council’s annual Road Safety Calendar Art Competition took place again this year with several hundred entries received from primary school children around the county, demonstrating their artistic skills to highlight the important message of road safety. The April winner was Maebh O’Connor of Lissivigeen National School. Her painting warned of the dangers of using a mobile phone while driving.

Padraig Lenihan of Knockanes National School was the June winner for his advice on taking a break while driving if tired. "I have loved doing art since I was four and it's great to be able to make people aware of road safety through my drawing," Padraig, who is a Fifth Class pupil, told the Killarney Advertiser. Ms. Fenton, Padraig's class teacher, was delighted to see Padraig's talents recognised as he is very passionate about art. "We were very proud to hear that from the hundreds of entries for the competition that he was chosen as one of the 12 pictures for the calendar," she said.

“In previous years, winning students would be invited to attend at County Buildings, Tralee and prizes presented by the Cathaoirleach of Kerry County Council. However, this year it was not possible to hold the prize giving ceremony at County Buildings in the best interests of health and safety of everyone,” said a Kerry County Council spokesperson. Instead, Council staff arranged for prize boxes consisting of KCC sponsored winners’ trophy, RSA sponsored high-vis goods, published calendars, chocolates, to be delivered this week to the winning children at their schools around the county.

Call for food producers and buyers to get listed | By Sean Moriarty It'll change the way food producers and buyers do business as Kerry Food Hub has launched a brand new training programme.

BRANCHING OUT: Not only are Aldi opening brand new stores in Killarney and Cahersiveen, they have also planted 24,000 trees in Kerry this month. Pictured at the site of the tree planting from l-r were: Patrick Lawlor (Aldi Killarney Store Manager) alongside Gerry Christie (local landowner), and Ger Moroney (Green Belt).

24,000 trees planted to mark opening of new Kerry stores

Ahead of next month's grand opening in Killarney and its Cahersiveen store in February, Aldi have planted 24,000 trees in Kerry this month. The Aldi Kerry store staff teamed up with Green Belt and local landowner Gerry Christie to plant the trees across Cloonafinneela and Cappawee. Aldi is the first retailer in Ireland to commit to planting one million native Irish woodland trees by 2025 in partnership with Green Belt. The native trees will create a wildlife corridor for native species and enhance biodiversity, while also removing more than 160,000 tonnes of carbon emissions over their 100-year life

span. Aldi’s new store in Killarney will be situated next door to the current store, which will close on Wednesday January 12 ahead of the new store opening on Thursday January 13. The Killarney store has undergone a rebuild, with the newly revamped store being powered by 100% green electricity. Aldi’s long awaited Cahersiveen store will open on Thursday February 17 and will be Aldi’s 150th store in Ireland and Aldi’s eight store in Kerry.

Helen says farewell to Macbees | By Michelle Crean

KNOCK-OUT: Kerry's Kevin Cronin made light work of Bosnian Boris Mrkonjic when the pair met in the ring earlier this year.

Cronin dreams of INEC gig | By Sean Moriarty

Most will know her for her clothing advice - but after almost 50 years in fashion sales, Helen Flahive said goodbye to Macbees on New St. 48 years after she started learning the retail trade alongside Mary McBride (nee Crowley) in Crowley’s Killorglin, Helen decided it was time for a change and has retired. Helen started in Crowley’s in 1973 and when Mary established Macbees in Killarney in 1984 Helen was entrusted to hold the fort in Killorglin. Helen later joined Mary in Killarney where she was a valued, hard working and corner stone member of the Macbees team until last week. "She will be sorely missed by customers and colleagues at Macbees but we suspect Helen is already planning her next adventure," Aoife McBride from Macbees said.

Through its Artisan Market, Kerry Food Hub are launching the 'Get Listed ‘22' training programme which aims to help local foodies create a better online presence. The Artisan Market is a local, premium, food producer’s digital marketplace designed to allow chefs and business buyers purchase high quality locally produced bespoke products at any time of the day or night online. “At the core of the Get Listed ‘22 training programme is how to position, market and sell your specialised food products more effectively online," Tony McCarthy, Food Hub’s Business Improvement Specialist, explained. "The training programme is free of

charge for all qualified participants, has a minimal time commitment but will have a maximum return for the artisan business." To ensure success artisan food producers must ensure they stay agile and strive for continuous improvements through ongoing digital skill-building, he added. "The aim of the training programme will be to arm our artisan food producers with real world knowledge that they can apply directly to their own businesses. The 'Get Listed ’22' training programme will cover a wide range of essential skill sets to support the trainees, starting with the ability to tailor a sales strategy, Level 2 HACCP compliance, written content development, food photography and video content production and finally for going live in the marketplace, how to manage product information for retail or additional sales channels.” For more details and to register visit www.artisanmarket.ie/get-listed/.

The Milltown fighter, nicknamed the 'Kingdom Warrior' is Kerry’s, and possibly Ireland’s, best hope to make it to world-level in the light-heavy weight division. Apart from his own personal ambitions, he also hopes to stage a world class title fight at the INEC. He has plans in place but they remain on the long finger as an event of this stature would need a full capacity crowd to make it financially viable. Earlier this year Cronin beat Bosnian Boris Mrkonjic in Luxembourg. He was due to fight British hopeful Ryan Hibbert in England last weekend but the Briton called it off at the last minute.

Based on his international experience, Cronin believes that the INEC is the right place to bring pro-boxing to Kerry. “After the fight in Luxemburg, my management team were all over the idea of the INEC,” he told the Killarney Advertiser. “Once things get back to normal there is a very good chance – but it needs a crowd and it needs to be at full capacity.” His plan would be to stage several fights, across different weight divisions, as part of a support bill before the main fight of evening. Cronin wants to take on a serious opponent – someone like former World Number One Dmitry Chudinov - in his home patch. “It has to be someone that big," he added. “It has to be something the whole world will sit up and take notice of…and it might propel me onto the world stage too.”

Local woman jets halfway round the world to watch hero's last race A Farranfore woman is such a fan of Formula One that she flew halfway around the world to see her hero race for the very last time. | By Sean Moriarty Finish legend Kimi Räikkönen, the 2007 World Drivers' Champion, retired from Grand Prix Racing after Sunday’s Abu Dhabi Grand Prix. North Carolina-based Karen McCarthy has followed the Finn’s 20 year career in the World Championship. The enigmatic Räikkönen started F1 racing in 2001 with the Sauber team. He has raced for the world’s best teams, including McLaren and two stints with Ferrari, the first between 2007 and 2009 when he won the world title for the famed Italian team. He earned a cult following for his lack of interest in post event press conferences which often resulted in hilarious one liner responses while his radio conversations with his team chiefs were littered with expletives and a 'leave me alone’ attitude.

Karen and her husband Richard Hull have attended 60 of his record-breaking 349 Formula One races all over the world. They even followed him on his 2010 farewell tour, after which he raced in other forms of motorsport, before making a dramatic u-turn and returning to Formula One in 2012 with Lotus. “Hard to put the last few days in words. So grateful to have been able to be here, but also completely heartbroken having to say goodbye to Kimi,” she said. “I could never have imagined when I became a fan of his 20 years ago that it would shape my life the way it has or that I would have attended 17% of his 349 F1 starts. What an adventure it’s been. He’ll always be my hero.” Karen and Richard run a motorsport electronics firm in Charlotte, North

Carolina. Despite the long-haul flight from the USA to Abu Dhabi the pair were determined not to miss Räikkönen’s final race. They got more than they bargained for as the 2021 world title was decided in controversial and dramatic circumstances between Max Verstappen, who took his first World Championship, and seven time champion Lewis Hamilton. “I am so grateful for all the life-long friends we’ve made along the way, but I’m mostly grateful for my very understanding and patient husband. In our 15 years together, I’ve dragged him to F1 races for pretty much all of our holidays. Now Rich finally gets to take a break from F1 as well,” she added. “We are still digesting the whole weekend to be honest! So lucky to have been able to be there. The atmosphere on Sunday was just incredible. Not the result we wanted, or the way the championship should have been won, but can’t deny that Max deserved it. Both of them did - they were both just on another level this year.”

KIMI FANS: Karen McCarthy and her husband Richard Hull travelled from the United States to attend Sunday's Abu Dhabi Grand Prix.

WEDDING

Wedding was "emotional and special day"

WEDDING OF THE WEEK

26

Families joined together for the first time since the pandemic began to celebrate the very special union of Sean McDermott Foley and Patrick Tangney. It was an emotional day for Sean and Patrick, as they tied the knot on Thursday, November 11. Sean is son of Nicola and Anthony Foley from Keel, Castlemaine and Patrick from Listry Cross, is son of Veronique Tangney and Brendan Tangney (RIP). They were married at Killarney Registry Office, with reception afterwards at The International Hotel, Killarney. Best Girls were Finnolla Halpin and Bridgid O'Neill. Patrick and Finnolla have been best friends for over 30 years since they were in Junior Infants together. Bridesmaid was Patrick's sister, Nicole Tangney. Sean is eCommerce Manager at The Gleneagle Group and Patrick is a self-employed website developer. Both now live in Tralee. Christmas is a magical time for them as it was around this time six years ago that they met. The couple got engaged in August 2018 at the Killarney Races. Then it was time to start planning the wedding. "We had the most incredible day surrounded by our closest family and friends," Sean told the Killarney Advertiser. "Our reception was perfect with 70 guests. Caitriona, Les and all of the team at The International Hotel were incredible and no details were missed. We fell in

love with the International Hotel and its historical charm, a truly beautiful venue. We were very lucky that we had minimal restrictions and our guests danced the night away with The Busker Band and DJ," he added. "It was the first time our families had all been together since pre-COVID times so it was a very emotional and special day for us all." The day was wet and windy so photographs, taken by Marek Hajdasz of MH Weddings, were done in Reidys and The International Hotel, he added.

Teen wins gold in Brazilian martial arts competition | By Sean Moriarty A Killarney teenager is celebrating winning gold and silver at the Dublin International Open Competition for Brazillian Jiu Jutsu.

Kerry Airport gets early Christmas bonus | By Sean Moriarty Over €2 million in Government funding for Kerry Airport Ireland to maintain vital safety operations during the latest wave of the pandemic is a welcome pre-Christmas boost, according to Kerry Airport CEO, John Mulhern. It will ensure that the airport in Farranfore can continue to remain compliant with regulatory requirements in the areas of fire safety, air traffic control, and security. “Yet again aviation, like many industries, finds itself adversely impacted by a new variant of COVID-19 with many choosing

not to travel to await both hard data on the true impact of this variant and their booster doses of vaccine,” said John Mulhern. “However, this funding from the Department of Transport again demonstrates a strong commitment by Government to help us navigate the pandemic. We thank Minister Naughton and recognise the tireless work in the background by the team at the Department of Transport. Grateful thanks as always to our Kerry-based Government representatives, Minister for Education Norma Foley and Deputy Chief Whip Brendan Griffin for their continued support.”

A form of martial arts first developed by police in the South American country it has grown worldwide into a sport of its own in a similar way to karate and Taekwondo. The Dublin event is the equivalent of the All-Ireland finals in the sport and Filip Jakubowski was the only Kerry teenager to qualify for the event. The 16-year-old took up the sport around two years ago when he walked past the Movement & Fitness Club and saw people practicing it. The New St gym is also home to a Brazilian Jiu Jitsu and Capoeira Academy and the Dereen-based teenager was instantly hooked. “It took off from there,” the St Brendan’s College student told the Killarney Advertiser. He won gold in the ‘nogi’ section of the competition and silver in the ‘gi’ category.

CHAMPION: Filip Jakubowski won gold and silver at the Dublin International Open Competition for Brazillian Jiu Jitsu.

HEALTH & FITNESS Support local by buying Kerry Gift Card

Advice - By Angela Kerrisk

Angela is available for advice and fitness consultations, at info@activate.ie • www.activate.ie

Why you need a nutrition coach Looking to improve your nutrition and reach your health and fitness goals is anything but easy. In fact, it can be one of the most frustrating and confusing things you try. Each day there is a new study out, a new bestseller promising the secret to quick results, a new diet saying something completely different from the last, all promising quick easy results. Who and what should you believe, how do you stay consistent, how do you incorporate better eating into your busy life and what kind of nutrition programme or diet is best for you and your goals? You start to make strides, but keep finding yourself saying, “I’ll start back up on Monday!” Most likely what you are following involves some sort of restriction. Maybe you feel like you know what to do but just aren’t seeing the results you want? You move from programme to programme, diet to diet, reading every article that pops up on social media promising the magic answer. There are meal plans of every type available online so why is it so hard to lose weight? It’s because weight loss is not just about food and meal plans, there is one thing missing from all of the above and it’s accountability. It is also the one thing that has the biggest impact on your success. You see, you can have all the nutrition information in the world. Even if you know what to do, you know the right foods to eat and what to avoid, you can still struggle in reaching your goals.

ACCOUNTABILITY

Something special happens when you hire a coach. Your level of accountability

significantly increases and this, in turn, helps you to stay consistent and to be successful in reaching your goals! It’s easy to commit. It’s also easy to overcommit, become overwhelmed and quit. The tough part is trying to stay committed. We have all been there. This is why here at Activate Nutrition we focus on getting our clients invested in their health - not for the short term, but for life. We do this by introducing small, weekly habit changes that build off the previous one. This helps our clients from getting overwhelmed and actually keeps them excited as they conquer new goals and experience wins. In fact, research shows you are 80% more likely to establish a new habit if you introduce it one at a time, and if you try to introduce three or more new habits then this plummets to a 5% success rate! At Activate we have seen some incredible results. One of the things we love most is how well our members continue to do once they leave our nutrition programme and to see how empowered they are to take responsibility for their own health. We know that the truth is it takes time to make a change which is why we like to work on one thing at a time. Making a change on your own is hard, if it were easy you would have done it by now. This is where having a nutrition coach can help with offering you that much needed extra support and accountability and to help you set a plan and help you to carry it out. If you are ready for the change you want and to get rid of the confusion surrounding your nutrition, we are ready to help you! For more information on our nutrition programme, please contact us at www. activate.ie.

The card, which is operated by One4all and supported by the Kerry Chambers Network and Kerry County Council, is part of a wider campaign to encourage people in Kerry to shop locally and spend locally at this time of enormous challenge for many people in business. “Kerry Chambers and Kerry County Council have been working closely together in recent months on practical and meaningful ways in which businesses can be supported through the current economic difficulties,” Cathaoirleach of Kerry County Council, Cllr Jimmy Moloney, said. “This new Kerry Gift Card is an ideal

way for people in the county to support their local shops and businesses. I would urge people to consider the card as a gift for loved ones and to use and spend the cards promptly to ensure businesses are supported now through the current challenges.” President of Killarney Chamber, Niall Kelleher added that the Kerry Gift card already has hotels, restaurants and shops throughout the county signed up, and is being supported by businesses in every corner of the county. “With such a wide range of locations to redeem the card there is huge choice for people this Christmas. We would encourage everyone to buy the card as a gift now, and encourage them to spend it over the coming weeks and months throughout the county.”

James Blunt confirms Killarney summer date James Blunt has announced a return to the Gleneagle INEC Arena to celebrate his special greatest hits album, 'The Stars Beneath My Feet (2004-2021)’. The tour - which includes a stop off at the Gleneagle INEC Arena on June 10 - will see James celebrate songs spanning a stellar 17-year career that has spawned over 23 million album sales, a global smash hit with ‘You’re Beautiful’, two Brit Awards and two Ivor Novello Awards, as well as receiving five Grammy Award nominations. Amongst the string of hit singles, 'The Stars Beneath My Feet (2004-2021)’ out now on Atlantic Records - will also include four new songs ‘Love Under Pressure’, ‘Unstoppable’, ‘Adrenaline’ and ‘I Came For Love’, as well as four exclusive live performances from around the world, including the Glastonbury Festival. It also features stunning tracks from his latest Gold-selling album ‘Once Upon A Mind’, including ‘Cold’, and the heartbreaking ballad for his father, ‘Monster’. “Amazingly, I’m releasing my Greatest Hits. I wanted to call it 'Greatest Hit (&

Songs I Wish You’d Heard)', but the good people at Atlantic Records suggested I call it something more sensible, so it’s called 'The Stars Beneath My Feet'," James said. "If you’d ever wished that James Blunt had only ever released one album – this is that album. It’s 30 awesome songs, including live performances from Glastonbury and elsewhere, and four new songs. To celebrate its release, I’ll be heading out to tour the world all next year. I can’t wait to see you then.” James’ classic 2004 debut album ‘Back To Bedlam’, was recently named as one of the top ten best selling albums of that decade, and with ‘Once Upon A Mind’, James Blunt reinforced his reputation for writing honest, emotional songs that people can easily relate to. The album marked a return to what James Blunt does best – writing classic songs that touch both the heart and the head. Another side of James - his wit and charm - have in recent times been showcased via his always engaging Twitter account.

It is not too late to do a bit of planting The last week has definitely shown us the power of weather… it has also shown me all the things which need to be done before winter. Staking trees and large shrubs is so important, many have rocked loose, which is not too bad, as long as you firm them down as soon as possible. If the holes fill with water for any length of time, it will cause the roots to rot. Stake trees no higher than a third of their main stem, and preferably use two stakes on opposing sides to prevent the tree from snapping in the wind. Polytunnels and glasshouses are also very vulnerable structures, and should be checked for tears or cracks regularly. Polytunnels, if they are in a very windy spot causing you worry, can be strengthened by putting netting over them and pinning that down. Any tears which occur should be taped as soon as possible using special polytunnel repair tape. This is UV and wet resistant, and does not work loose. Timber fencing, pergolas and panels should also be checked as these can all rot, yet can look perfectly sound…until a storm blows through and lifts them. In my experience, pergolas can seem perfect, however they rot down near the ground and often the whole thing collapses unexpectedly. Wind break can pose another headache during the winter, so it is worthwhile doing a thorough check and refastening

any loose bits as well as cutting off any torn pieces. It is not too late to do a bit of planting, especially bulbs can still be a good investment. Most places are selling their stock off at half price now, and bulbs can be planted into January, really. They will flower a bit later, but the following year they will be in sync with their natural flowering times again. One of the best bedding plants for any weather is the Bellis, or the Batchelor’s Buttons – small daisy flowers. They really cope with anything, and keep flowering cheerfully right until the end of March. Violas and Pansies are also great, and cyclamen are colourful additions to any pot, as long as they do not get too much rain on their heads. As I often write, my favourite winter plant is heather, which thrives in bleak, windy or wet conditions. This is a quiet time in the garden, though plenty of plans can be made, as well as preparations. Taking stock of what grew well for you, as well as what failed, should be recorded – either to avoid buying them next year, or to remedy the reason something did not do well. This is especially true for the vegetable and fruit garden. As part of my veg garden regeneration, I am building fruit cages. There was no fruit to be had this year, partly because I was too late checking, and partly because the birds were checking right on time! So, fruit cages it must be!

KNOW YOUR RIGHTS

Public holiday entitlements QUESTION: As an employee, what are my entitlements in relation to public holidays? ANSWER: Most employees are entitled to paid leave on public holidays. There is an exception for certain part-time employees. If you qualify for public holiday benefit, you are entitled to one of the following: • A paid day off on the public holiday • An additional day of annual leave • An additional day's pay • A paid day off within a month of the public holiday You can ask your employer at least 21 days before a public holiday, which of the alternatives will apply. If your employer does not respond at least 14 days before the public holiday, you are entitled to take the actual public holiday as a paid day off. Q: As a part-time worker, what is my entitlement in relation to Public Holidays? A: You are entitled to a day's pay for the public holiday if you have worked for your employer at least 40 hours in the five weeks before the public holiday and the public holiday falls on a day you normally work. If you are required to work that day you are entitled to an additional day's pay in lieu of the day off. If you do not normally work on that particular day, you should get one-fifth of your weekly pay. Even if you are never rostered to work on a public holiday, you are entitled to one-fifth of your weekly pay as compensation for the public holiday.

Q: This year Christmas falls on the weekend. What does that mean for my entitlement to time off for public holidays? A: This year, each of the three upcoming public holidays fall on a weekend day: Christmas Day, Saturday December 25 Saint Stephen’s Day, Sunday December 26, New Year’s Day, Saturday January 1. When a public holiday falls on a day which is not a ‘normal working day’ for that business (for example, on Saturday or Sunday), you are still entitled to benefit from that public holiday. For example, you may get an extra day of annual leave, or an additional day's pay, or a paid day off within a month of the public holiday. However, you do not have any automatic legal entitlement to have the next working day off work. _________________________________________________ During COVID-19, you can find comprehensive integrated information online at citizensinformation.ie/covid19/ and you can get daily updates on what’s changed on Twitter at @citizensinfo. This year Healy Insurances marked

40 years in Business Managing Director John Healy said “As with all things ‘covid 19 related’ we had to postpone our 40th year in business celebrations earlier this year. We thought we should mark it before the year end and hopefully we can celebrate properly with our team in 2022”. “My late father Jim Healy started the business in 1981, when he left a secure pensionable job with General Accident Insurance Company. “I am not sure the title of start-up entrepreneur existed back then but perhaps it should have as Dad took a risk on starting his own business” The business went from strength to strength over the years, always adapting and evolving and has earned a reputation for professionalism integrity and excellent customer service in all its business dealings. In 2002, Jim’s son John joined the business, having cut his teeth with Church and General (now Allianz) and Hibernian (now Aviva) “Back then I joined our team of two with one shared computer and one quotation engine. Physical rating guides were still a thing, it sounds like a long time ago now”. “We stated to digitise the business immediately moving from a manual paper based system to a fully computerised modern brokerage.” While the business grew organically in Killarney and beyond acquisitions greatly assisted. 2006 saw Healy’s acquire Irwin insurances and in 2007 Casey Insurances, one of Kerry’s longest established brokers, was acquired. Both of these investments strengthened the company’s position in the marketplace. “This ultimately enabled us to achieve better rates from our insurer partners for the benefit of our customers” John continued.

“It was a really exciting time and to be working alongside dad as we developed strategies for the future” Healy Insurances has been owned and managed by John & Patricia since 2007. Together with a loyal team, they have developed and expanded the business, investing in the most up to date insurance software and putting an even greater emphasis on efficiency and customer satisfaction. Unfortunately, Jim Healy passed away suddenly in May 2011, just shy of marking 30 years since he founded his business. “That was a difficult period for sure and once we regrouped we had to look to the future. One of dad’s favourite words was “progress” The past number of years have seen a huge investment by the brokerage, firstly in its cloud based IT system and then its physical office building at 11 New Street. “We moved our IT infrastructure to the cloud in 2018 which increased our efficiency and productivity greatly and allowed us to pivot with speed to remote working when the pandemic hit. In order to grow the business we extended and renovated our offices in 2019” Indeed the refurbishment of 11 New Street won the refurbishment award and the overall prize in the Killarney looking good competition for 2019. Healy Insurances were also finalists in the Kerryman Newspaper business awards in 2018, for best family run business. Today Healy Insurances is supported by a team of eight insurance professionals together with John and Patricia. “Our model of putting the customer at the heart of our business has resulted in our clients benefiting by saving money on their premiums

and getting the best advice. We empower our team to make decisions and offer solutions to our customers” “It’s a wonderful milestone to reach 40 years in business. I would like to thank our committed team here for their hard work and dedication and of course to all our loyal customers. We have more plans to drive the business forward over the next number of years. We will continue to provide a top class advice driven service that looks after people and simplifies the insurance journey through innovation and the personal touch” “Hopefully we will get the opportunity to celebrate with our team early in 2022, I am a firm believer that you should always mark the milestones” Healy Insurances arranges all forms of General Insurance cover including Motor and Home Insurance, Business Insurance, Property Insurance, Liability Insurance, Professional indemnity Insurance, Motor Trade and cyber liability and other niche products such as lost share indemnities, and legal contingency cover. Together with John (Certified Insurance Practitioner, Diploma in Financial Services Insurance) the team includes Margaret Foley (GF Personal Insurance), Mary Doyle (GF Personal Insurance), Sandra Lucey (APA Personal Insurance), Norma O’Connor (Certified Insurance Practitioner), Vivienne Doyle (APA Personal & Commercial Insurance), Jacqueline Shine (Certified Insurance Practitioner), Clara O’Sullivan (APA Personal Insurances in progress), Monika Figaj (Certified Insurance Practitioner) and Patricia Healy (APA Personal Insurance, BA).

A WEEKLY ROUND-UP OF NEWS • VIEWS FROM KERRY AND AROUND THE WORLD SUPPORT

KILLARNEY

INSPIRED BY DANNY CASEY

Snake found slithering in Christmas tree! A venomous snake is not something that you'd like to find slithering in your Christmas tree - but that's what one South African family discovered this week.

World's first text message to be auctioned for charity It was a technology that changed the way we communicate - and now the world's first ever text message is going up for auction next week. Vodafone have said that it will auction an NFT - a Non-Fungible Token which is a digital asset designed to represent ownership of a unique virtual item - of the world’s first ever SMS text message. The detailed replica of the original communication protocol wished customers a ‘Merry Christmas’. It was was sent on the network almost 30 years ago - in December 1992. Proceeds from the auction will not be

going into the hands of Vodafone's executives but instead they've decided to raise money for the UNHCR, the UN Refugee Agency, to support the 82.4 million people who have been forced to flee their homes due to conflict and persecution. The auction will be conducted in Paris on Tuesday by Aguttes, the first independent auction house in France. Bidders from all around the world are expected to participate in the sale with the buyer paying with Ether cryptocurrency. “We’re proud to be bringing together a major technology innovation from our past with cutting-edge technology of

today, to help people in desperate need of support," Ahmed Essam, chief exec Vodafone UK, said. "This initiative embodies our ‘Together We Can’ spirit.” Auction house founder Maximilian Aguttes added that it's a piece if history. “The first printed book, the first phone call, the first email – all these inventions have changed our lives and communication in the world. This first text message received in 1992 is a historic testament to human and technological progress – we are delighted to be able to support the sale of this landmark piece of history for this cause.”

Residents in one home near McGregor, in the Western Cape area who had put their decorations up, including their tree, were shocked to find the reptile near the top moving about. They called in the help of wildlife rescuer Gerrie Heyns, owner of reptile rescue service Snake Lives Matter. Heyns said he arrived at the home 90 minutes later to find the snake still slithering in the branches. Using a pair of specialised tongs he showed how he captured the snake and later posted the video to his business' YouTube channel. A second video showed the rescuer releasing the reptile into the wild. Afterwards he added that it was the first time he had been called to remove a snake from a Christmas tree.

New 'NotEven1' road safety campaign launched The Road Safety Authority (RSA) and the Gaelic Players Association (GPA) are calling on all motorists to prioritise their performance behind the wheel and never ever drink and drive. The advice comes as the RSA and the GPA are launching a new campaign to drive awareness of maintaining absolute focus behind the wheel, with the warning that even one drink can impair performance on the roads. The #NotEven1 campaign reminds motorists that ‘not even one’ drink should

be taken by anyone who plans on driving a car or motorcycle. The campaign is supported by senior All-Ireland winning goalkeepers Sarah Healy (Galway), Nickie Quaid (Limerick), Monica McGuirk (Meath) and Niall Morgan (Tyrone). This initiative is part of an ongoing collaboration between the RSA and GPA to encourage positive road behaviour and help reduce deaths and serious injuries on Irish roads. “The RSA is delighted to partner with the Gaelic Players Association to launch this great road safety campaign," Sam Waide, CEO, Road Safety Authority,

said. "I’d also like to acknowledge the leadership role that the GPA has played in promoting road safety in recent years with the RSA. In this campaign we are asking motorists to think about driving like the top athletes in the country do when preparing for a game: nothing is as important as maintaining focus, keeping a high level of performance and mental sharpness when you are driving. You put all that at risk if you take even one drink and drive. So, the message must be, ‘Not Even One’. It’s simply not worth the risk.”

Beer and cider sales down due to ongoing restrictions €100 electricity payment approved by Cabinet Every home in the country will receive €100 off their electricity bill in early 2022, a measure which was approved by Cabinet this week. The payment is one of a suite of measures to mitigate the effects of the unprecedented rise in electricity prices. On Tuesday, a €210m scheme was approved with approximately 2.1 million domestic electricity account holders set to benefit in the one-off, exceptional payment to their electricity accounts. However, primary and secondary legislation will be required to underpin the scheme. The new scheme to be known as the Electricity Costs Emergency Benefit Scheme following the passage of primary legislation through the Oireachtas in the New Year. The scheme will be operated by ESB Networks who will make payments to the individual energy suppliers and the Commission for the Regulation of Utilities (CRU) will be charged with oversight of the scheme. All domestic accounts, including Pay as You Go customers, will receive the credit. How the payment will be applied

is currently being finalised and will be announced in the New Year. However, it will be automatic and will apply to all customers and people will not need to apply for it. “The Government is very conscious that international energy prices are having a significant effect on utility bills," Minister for the Environment, Climate and Communications, Eamon Ryan TD, said. "While we took measures in the Budget to support vulnerable groups, this credit is designed to provide all householders with a contribution to their electricity bills in the spring of 2022. In the long term, the way to reduce our dependence on internationally traded fossil fuels is to expand our own indigenous supply of renewable power. We are working towards having up to 80% of our electricity from renewables by 2030.” The most immediate factor affecting electricity prices in Ireland is the upward trend in international gas prices. In Europe, wholesale natural gas prices have been on an upward curve since the second half of 2020. This feeds directly through to retail electricity prices, as the wholesale price of electricity correlates strongly with the price of gas.

Counselling service to open every day over Christmas Telephone counselling and support service Connect is to extend its hours during Christmas to open every evening from now until Sunday, January 2. Connect is a free, confidential and professional telephone-based counselling and support service for adults who were abused in childhood and will open from 6-10pm each evening. People can call Connect for free at 1800 477 477. Callers will get to speak with a trained counsellor who can listen and provide professional counselling and support. “Christmas is a particularly sensitive period in terms of public need for the

service," Service Director Marie Percival said. "We want to ensure that we are there for people if they need our support.” From Northern Ireland and the UK people can call 00 800 477 477 77. Connect’s normal opening hours, which will return in January, are 6-10pm Wednesday to Sunday. Connect was established in 2006 following demands from groups representing survivors of institutional abuse that an independent and professional out of hours telephone-based service be established. It is funded by the HSE. More information at www.connectcounselling.ie.

New data from the Revenue Commissioners shows alcohol consumption in Ireland has fallen again, with sales of beer and cider particularly impacted by the closing of and ongoing restrictions in pubs, restaurants and bars, in towns and cities throughout the country. Every category of alcohol has seen a fall in sales since before the pandemic, with total sales down by over 10% in the last two years. The data shows that for the first nine months of 2021, compared to the same period in 2020 that beer sales are down 3.6%, spirits sales are up 0.4%, wine sales are down 13.0%, cider sales are down 11.8% with a total of alcohol sales down by 6.4%. The comparison between the first nine months of 2021 and the same period in 2019, before the pandemic hit, are even starker with beer sales down 17.8%, spirits down 0.8%, wine sales down 1.4%, and cider sales down 20.3% showing a total of alcohol sales down 10.4%. “This data shows the long-term trend in falling alcohol consumption continu-

ing, but that fall has been exacerbated by the pandemic and the shuttering of and ongoing restrictions on the hospitality sector," Drinks Ireland Director, Patricia Callan, said. "Having endured the strictest lockdown in Europe, it is hardly surprising to see this dramatic fall. The fall is even more dramatic in the context of alarmist and erroneous claims at various times in the last two years that alcohol consumption was rising or even soaring – it simply was not.”

Fire at Hong Kong's World Trade Centre Up to 150 people were left trapped on the rooftop of Hong Kong's World Trade Centre on Wednesday after a fire broke out on the lower level.

Firefighters battled the blaze with two water jets and deployed breathing apparatus as they tried to get the fire in the 39-storey skyscraper under control. It's believed that fire broke out in a utili-

ty room of the shopping mall at approximately noon before spreading to bamboo scaffolding surrounding the block. The fire spread fast through the building, which has both offices and a shopping centre, in the Causeway Bay commercial and shopping district. Authorities said the fire was brought under control by 3.06pm and 12 people were brought to hospital for treatment.

Working Hard for the Killarney Area December 2021 A Chara, As 2021 draws to a close, I hope you and your family are doing well in these strange and challenging times. The pandemic continues to impact heavily on our daily lives and like everyone, I miss meeting people the way we used to. Despite the pandemic, I am busier than ever. I am publishing this information as a summary of some of the work I continue to do as your Kerry TD to make a positive difference in the things that matter to you, your family and your friends. Please contact me any time, or feel free to call our full-time office in Castlemaine, where Tommy and Róisín will do everything they can to assist you no matter how big or small your ask - we’re there to help and we’re proud to serve our communities, our county and our country.

Sports Funding:

Throughout 2021, I have campaigned for a bigger Sports Capital Programme budget, which would mean more funding for a larger number of the sports clubs, schools & community facilities who are waiting for the outcome of the current round. So far, I was delighted to see a further €6 million secured and I will keep campaigning on this to build on the successful work I was able to do for a large number of sports clubs in the Killarney area when I was the Minister for Sport for the 2017 and 2019 Sports Capital Programmes.

I wish you and your loved ones a very happy, safe and peaceful Christmas and a healthy and joyful 2022. With warmest regards,

Brendan Local Improvement Scheme Roads:

Following an intensive campaign that I spearheaded earlier this year, I was delighted to get a major win with the announcement of an EXTRA 10.5 MILLION EURO for Local Improvement Scheme (LIS) roads around the country- a doubling of the original 2021 budget! I am working for more money to help clear the list of roads awaiting funding in the Killarney area.

N22 Killarney to Cork Road:

After years of hard work and dedication to the campaign to build the new road from Ballyvourney to Macroom, I was proud to oversee the start of this project during my tenure in the Department of Transport. The project is currently about half way through construction and will be a massive boost to socio-economic life in Kerry once completed in 2023/24. I am also working hard to secure further investment in all of Kerry’s main roads, including the N21 (Castleisland to Tralee cycle lane), N22 (Farranfore to Lisivigeen Bypass), N23 (Farranfore to Castleisland safety improvements), N69 (Listowel Bypass), N70 (numerous safety and cycling initiatives), N71 (Dinis to Torc safer walking), N72 (Killorglin to Anglont walking & cycling/ Killarney to Rathmore safety) & N86 (Annascaul to Lios Póil major upgrade).

Law & Order:

I have been regularly raising matters relating to law and order within Kerry and the State with the Minister for Justice and recently invited Minister Helen McEntee to Kerry to discuss numerous Justice related matters with Gardaí and other stakeholders. I am working with her on measures to tackle anti-social behaviour, including the possible national expansion of the See Something Say Something text initiative.

University Hospital Kerry:

Kerry’s University:

Munster Technological University is now a reality. I envisage MTU playing a key role in the future higher education and economic life of Kerry and is a huge opportunity on our doorstep for all our people. I am working with the University Chairman, Jimmy Deenihan, and the administration, as well as Kerry industry leaders to leverage as many benefits as possible through MTU and I have already brought a number of Ministers to visit and engage, including Minister for Higher Education, Simon Harris.

I have been consistently raising concerns regarding UHK with hospital management, the South/Southwest Hospital Group, senior officials in the HSE and senior ministers, including the Taoiseach. Following a recent Dáil debate that I tabled on the issue, senior HSE officials visited the hospital to engage with stakeholders. I have demanded a full audit of all departments and systems in the hospital and an urgent plan to address UHK system failures and unacceptable waiting lists. Kerry patients deserve better and the incredibly hard working hospital staff deserve better. I am also constantly working on matters to assist people in relation to disability and mental health issues in Kerry and issues impacting on community healthcare.

Jobs for Kerry:

As a Minister at the beginning of the pandemic, I was instrumental in ensuring the swift provision of key business and worker supports to retain jobs throughout the economy, with schemes that evolved into the EWSS and PUP. I continue to work to ensure necessary supports are in place for each sector. The Tánaiste also recently confirmed to me in the Dáil that A SECOND IDA ADVANCE BUILDING is being considered for Tralee, potentially delivering hundreds of further new nearby jobs. I have called in the Dáil for a further Advance Building for the southern part of the county and asked that Killarney would be considered for such a building, which could create hundreds of jobs for the town and the surrounding areas.

Kerry Food Hub Firies;

Work continues in Firies on the new 10-unit Kerry Food Hub Part 2 after my colleague, Minister Martin Heydon, turned the sod on the project during the summer. The Food Hub currently has four 1,000sq ft units with 35 people employed. With the help of government investment, including substantial funding from Enterprise Ireland, which I announced in January of 2020, it will grow to fourteen 1,000sq ft units, with 100 direct jobs and a further 62 indirect local jobs.

Kerry Walking Trails:

Numerous Kerry walking trails throughout the county were recently added to the Walk Scheme by my colleague, Minister Heather Humphreys, following my persistent requests. Under the Walks Scheme, funding is provided to farmers and other landowners to maintain the trails that travel through their holdings. This is good news for local farmers and a stepping stone to further trail development in our county, as the incentives of trails become clearer to all stakeholders in our communities. I continue to work on joining up Kerry’s main walking trails, including the provision of the Lough Leane Loop. I am making solid progress and, nationally, I am pushing for the creation of the Wild Atlantic Walkway along the entire western seaboard.

Killarney Urban Regeneration Funding:

I worked tirelessly to help secure substantial funding earlier this year of €16 million for Killarney under the Urban Regeneration & Development Fund to help regenerate the town centre and provide important new facilities for the town.

Tomies Wood:

When I was Minister for Tourism, I worked hard to secure the funding to re-establish access to Tomies Wood and for the provision of parking facilities for visitors. A year on from the re-opening, I am delighted to see so many locals and visitors enjoying this beautiful local amenity. I will continue to work to conserve and enhance such special locations throughout our county.

Killarney National Park:

Following the devastating fires in Killarney National Park last spring, I have made further efforts to ensure greater investment in the Park, including frontline personnel and capital works. The Park plays a huge role in Kerry’s tourism appeal and is vitally important from a biodiversity perspective.

Tourism & Hospitality

I continue to build on my work as Minister of State for Tourism from 2017-2020 and recently had a full all-party debate tabled in the Dáil, where I contributed my views on rebuilding tourism in Kerry and Ireland post-pandemic. I am glad that overseas marketing budgets have been strengthened to help secure new air and sea routes and attract high spending international visitors from key markets. Kerry depends on a vibrant tourism industry and I am using my knowledge, experience and contacts to contribute in a significant way to the recovery.

Agriculture:

Kerry Airport:

I am glad to have helped secure broad ranging supports for Kerry Airport to ensure its survival during the pandemic and have been proactive in protecting the future of the Kerry to Dublin route, which is vital for the viability of Kerry Airport and therefore the existence of all other international routes from Kerry. Our airport is a vital link for industry and tourism and I will continue to do everything I can to support it.

Making Homes from Derelict Houses:

I have presented a detailed plan to government on how thousands of derelict houses throughout the country can be transformed quickly and affordably into homes for first time buyers. Here’s a summary: 1. Get increased supply of these houses on the market by providing a brief window where the seller pays no Capital Gains Tax if selling to a firsttime buyer. 2. Extend the Help to Buy Scheme to cover such houses without the existing requirement for total demolition. 3. Provide the first-time buyer with a generous renovation grant subject to a strict occupancy clause. 4. Waive electricity reconnection fees and water reconnection fees where applicable. 5. Increase planning permission exemption limits above 400 square feet for extensions to these houses. I am also working on protecting the rights of country people to build on their own land in the forthcoming County Development Plan and am engaging with senior management in Kerry County Council on this.

I constantly work closely with Kerry farmers and farming organisations on issues of individual and sectoral importance. In particular I have fought for more realistic climate action targets in relation to Agriculture as I believe unrealistic targets would push Irish farmers into diminishing returns. There’s no point Paddy in Ireland reducing his herd and cutting production only for Pedro in the Amazon to fill the vacuum less efficiently. Such unintended global consequences need to be avoided. It is vital that farmers get properly paid for carbon sequestration and carbon efficient production, and that the EU delivers its promised border adjustments so less carbon efficient producers cannot undercut efficient European farmers.

South Kerry Greenway:

As a long-time driver of the South Kerry Greenway plan, I look forward to full permission being finalised for this project. As the process has been continuing, I have been vociferously making the case in the Dáil and at every other opportunity for funding provision to construct the greenway at the earliest possible date and I brought the Minister for Finance to see the route recently. I have also been calling for preparations to be made now to provide safe cycling access from nearby communities, including the Killarney area, to the greenway routes, thereby leveraging the anticipated major economic benefits of the greenways to a broader catchment area. This can be done using currently unused space on our existing roads network and other public spaces.

Climate Action:

Effective implementation of the Climate Plan will require a collective effort from everyone and will need to be spearheaded with honest leadership from all politicians in Irish politics. It is too important to be used as a political football - the science of climate change is undeniable and some politicians denying the problem and ridiculing the people trying to address the problem do us all a huge disservice and do our children and grandchildren enormous damage. Through well thought out policy and innovative solutions, I believe we can avoid causing excessive inconvenience and hardship to our own people and still meet our targets. I strongly feel that we need flexibility in relation to offsetting the inflationary impact of carbon tax at points in the global fuel price cycle, such as now, when prices are extremely high. We also need better supports to improve insulation in homes, particularly attractive schemes aimed at older houses in our community. As electric vehicles become a more affordable alternative to diesel over a ten-year period, it is vital that longer range vehicles become cheaper for rural dwellers and that cheap and plentiful charging infrastructure is rolled out. Much more work needs to be done to find solutions that meet the needs of individuals and sectors for whom electric is not yet a viable option.

With the final countdown on to Christmas, Manor West Shopping Centre and Retail Park is planning for a busy shopping period as customers add the finishing touches to their Christmas preparations. Throughout the year, Centre Manager Derek Rusk and his team have been working tirelessly to ensure a safe working environment for both customers and those employed in the shopping centre and retail park, especially in the lead up to Christmas. Fortunately, 2021 has been a milestone year for Manor West as it saw the addition of some major retailers to the retail park. New store openings included the UK’s fastest growing retailer The Range, the giant Danish retailer, JYSK, pet products retailer Maxi Zoo and exciting new additions to the onsite restaurant facilities with Jam Café & Bakery being the first of many to open as part of Manor West’s new food court. The premier retail destination in the South West of Ireland also marked its 20th anniversary on October 23. Although the celebrations were very differ-

Manor West Shopping Centre and Retail Park set for busy Christmas ent from the centre’s 10th birthday, it is still a huge occasion and another cause for reflection. For the past 20 years, Manor West Retail Park has played a huge role in the community, by providing a major retail destination, employment to over 700 people as well as providing entrepreneurs with a fantastic platform to showcase their wonderful products through its food and craft fairs.

SUCCESS

"The success of Manor West would be nothing without our customers and it’s an exciting time for us here as we look forward to the future with new tenants and 100 new jobs for Tralee, as well as new and exciting shopping and dining experiences for visitors.” In the lead up to Christmas, Manor West Retail Park will operate extended opening hours to help with the controlled flow of customers through the shopping centre and retail park, while also allowing customers more time to get those last-minute purchases. 41,000 people receive Christmas Bonus in Kerry A 100% Christmas Bonus is being paid this year to 41,000 people in Kerry, according to Deputy Government Chief Whip, Brendan Griffin TD. The Christmas Bonus is paid to long-term social welfare recipients such as pensioners, carers, people with disabilities and lone parents. This year, Social Protection Minister Heather Humphreys announced changes to the criteria, meaning more people will benefit. For example, the qualifying period for people in receipt of an eligible Jobseeker’s payment was reduced to 12 months

from 15 months. In addition, long-term recipients of the Pandemic Unemployment Payment (PUP) are receiving this year’s Christmas Bonus. And time spent on the PUP by those who have since moved to a Jobseeker’s payment will count towards reaching the 12-month requirement. As we enter the Christmas period, Deputy Griffin has urged people in receipt of the Christmas Bonus to spend it in their local communities. “We all know that the Christmas period can be a very expensive time of year for

families," Deputy Griffin said. “I therefore really welcome the fact that we are once again in a position to provide a 100% Christmas Bonus this year. For me, it’s really important, where possible, that people spend their Christmas Bonus locally. We all know the difficult year that businesses in Kerry have endured due to COVID-19. By making a special effort to shop locally this year, we will support local retailers and local jobs.” The bonus will be paid into people’s bank accounts or their post offices this month, depending on the type of payment they receive.

SIMPLY BEAUTIFUL Make the most of

Beauty - By Jill O'Donoghue

Give the gift of beautiful skin We have some great gift ideas this Christmas that everyone will love, both ladies and gents.

A microdermabrasion facial and glycolic peel are great ways to start the New Year. Anyone that receives a gift voucher for beautiful skin will be extremely happy. Both these facials resurface and rejuvenate to a deep layer to help get rid of the dead cells and breathe fresh life into the skin, increasing circulation and stimulating collagen and elastin growth from the basal layer. These facials are suitable for all skin types, are anti-ageing, purifying for oily acne skin, help bring back the glow to dry, dehydrated skin and mature skin. The CACI Synergy Non-Surgical Facial is a great gift. These amazing facials lift, tone and tighten the skin. It can be the entire face, the jaw line and neck area and are very important while we wear

masks. Suitable for all skin types, it prevents ageing in younger clients and reverses it in older clients. All facials have to be slightly tailored to all clients, as all skin types, home care (if any, which is so important) and face shapes are different. The facial is suitable and very popular with the gents. It includes microdermabrasion, ultra-sonic skin peeling, micro current lifting with LED light therapy, wrinkle comb light therapy and galvanic roller with light therapy with a silicone mask infused with hyaluronic acid. It’s hydrating, deeply exfoliating and anti-ageing, all of which brings back the youthful suppleness and glow to the skin. Who wouldn’t want the gift of beautiful skin and relaxation of a facial? To order a voucher or to find out more information please call Jill on 064 6632966.

the Christmas break to review career options

At this stage of the year Leaving Cert students tend to be exhausted. It has been very busy since September working hard to complete courses, to make progress with projects and to settle into the routine of study. The Christmas holidays will bring a much needed break from school and the opportunity to rest and recharge the batteries. Spending time with family and friends will bring a welcome and well-earned break from the books. With six months to go until the exams start, now is the time to relax and re-energise.

RESEARCH THE DETAIL

It is also the ideal time to review your career plans for after school. When you go back to school in January it will be really busy preparing for the mocks so it would be great to have one less thing to worry about. Being off school means that you will have the headspace needed to research your options carefully and make important decisions. Now is the time to look at the range of options available in Higher Education Institutions (HEIs) through CAO, in Colleges of Further Education, apprenticeships, traineeships and other training programmes. It is important to research the detail carefully – entry requirements, module content, work placements, opportunities to study abroad, career pathways and progression to further study on completion. Think about how you learn best and choose options that reflect that.

APPLYING TO CAO

If you have not already registered for CAO, do so over the Christmas holidays on www.cao.ie. There is a ‘demo version’ of the form on the CAO website which you can use as a practice run. Once you have registered you have until February 1 at 5pm to complete the application and add in your course choices. You have the options to list 20 choices on CAO in total, 10 choices at Level 8 and 10 choices at Levels 7/6. You will have plenty of time to change course choices later on when the Change of Mind facility opens in May, but if you are applying for courses that are ‘restricted’ they must be added in by the February 1 deadline. If you register by January 20 you can avail of the discounted fee of €30 which increases to €45 up to February 1.

Niamh Dwyer is a Guidance Counsellor in Scoil Phobail Sliabh Luachra, Rathmore, and Chairperson of the Kerry Branch of Guidance Counsellors. She is also a Career Consultant. For details see www.mycareerplan.ie or follow MyCareerPlan on Facebook, Instagram or Twitter.

OPTIONS OUTSIDE OF CAO

Colleges of Further Education are accepting applications for courses starting in September 2022, many of which have progression routes on to Higher Education on completion. Check them out on www.fetchcourses.ie where you will also find information on traineeships. Applications for a wide range of apprenticeships are advertised on an ongoing basis, see www.apprenticehip.ie for details. If you have plans to apply for colleges outside of Ireland take note of upcoming application deadlines. Applications to Northern Ireland, England, Scotland and Wales must be made through www.ucas.com by January 26 at 6pm and require you to complete a personal statement and get a reference so don’t leave it until the last minute. Check out the deadlines for European colleges on www.eunicas.com and www.medicalpoland.ie. Taking time to explore all options, while you have the time to do it over Christmas, will help you to make an informed decision and ease the pressure and stress coming up to the application deadlines. Remember you will still have lots of time to review your options and change your mind later, but for now focus on exploring all the different options open to you. Read the detail, get familiar with the relevant application processes over the holidays and where possible complete them, so you can go back to school in January with a clearer focus, looking forward to what 2022 will bring! Wishing you an enjoyable and restful Christmas!

The Tarantino Market Markets are constantly changing and adapting, but a timeless law is that money will always chase performance, leaving us a step behind. Over the last six months, four stocks - Microsoft, Apple, Nvidia and Google - have generated almost 70% of the S&P 500's return. Meanwhile, many of the retail investing favourites continue their precipitous decline. In what has now been dubbed the Tarantino Market, the hottest stocks from last year are quietly getting killed in the basement while everything continues as normal in the front room. Docusign, Square, and Twilio have all lost between 20% and 35% YTD Teledoc, Zoom, Beyond Meat and Zillow have lost roughly 50% YTD StoneCo, Pelaton and Lemonade are down between 65% and 80% YTD The S&P 500 Index is up almost 25% this year, relentlessly hitting all-time highs in December while growth names crumble in the background. A reminder that stock picking is hard, and nothing lasts forever.

STATISTICALLY IMPOSSIBLE

For tech growth stocks that had pro-

duced record growth numbers in recent times, the endless upward trajectory was unsustainable, and those who assumed a perpetual state of hyper-growth are now beginning to sober up. It's a lesson learned. It's easy to get drawn in by the enticing narrative that these mammoth growth rates create, but these growth rates will never persist; it's a statistical impossibility. 100% revenue growth is an impressive but manageable task if your total revenue is 100k. Doubling your revenue from $500 million to $1 billion is a much more arduous endeavour. Don't get too attached to the hyper-growth story. The rate of growth is guaranteed to slow down over time, and much of this future growth is already baked into the price. Ensure you have other areas of conviction that you can assign to the company. Every company can have a hyper-growth story at some time or another. You need to have enough conviction to stay the course as the narrative changes and

companies encounter inevitable growing pains. You will never expose yourself to the exponential returns these companies offer in the long run if your only metric is price. Focus on finding companies you believe in with strong moats, inspirational founders, and innovative IP - companies that correspond with your vision of the future. Focusing on understanding what you're invested in and why you are invested in it makes it a lot easier to ignore the guaranteed price fluctuations over time. With that said, markets, companies and people change, so make sure to objectively assess your positions at regular intervals to ensure your original investment thesis still applies. Momentum is a powerful force in today's market and making investments simply because a stock has gone up in price and you are looking to get in on the action can be a rewarding strategy in the short run. Still, without understanding what you own and why you own it, you are in for a painstaking investment experience laced with perpetual uncertainty.

MAKE A PLAN

need to stay focused on the core principles of long-term investing. • Don't get caught up on short-term moves. Focus on your long-term time horizon • Make sure you have adequate diversification • Be patient: There will be periods where markets fall over 10%, that is a guarantee • Stay committed to the companies you believe in; conviction is everything • Be an opportunist: Use market corrections to build out positions in your favourite stocks. BURKE

In loving memory of Arthur Eoin O’ Keeffe late of “Riverdale View”, Lissivigeen, Killarney who died on 19th December, 2020.

In loving memory of my dear mother Eileen Buckley late of 12 St. Brendan’s Place who died on the 14th December 2001 and dear sister Kathleen who died on 20th December 2012, R.I.P.

In loving memory of our beloved parents John and Eily Burke late of 159 Ballyspillane, Killarney John who died 23rd October 1992 and Eily who died 16th December 2011.

As we fondly remember Arthur on his first anniversary, his wife, Kit, his children, Bernie, Noel and Geraldine, his brother, Eugie, his niece, Marie, his grandchildren and extended family would like to express our gratitude and appreciation to all those who expressed sympathy and gave their support to us. We would like to thank everyone who sent Mass cards, messages of condolence, telephoned, wrote letters, or visited the house – these were all very much appreciated. We send our heartfelt thanks to all the friends and neighbours who turned out in these difficult Covid times to provide a guard of honour on our driveway and along the roadside for Arthur’s funeral cortege. We found this support very comforting and we will always cherish the great send off Arthur received on his final journey from Lissivigeen. Thank you, Fr. Kieran, for the beautiful Mass with music and singing and for your kind and thoughtful words which meant so much to us. Thank you also for your many visits to Arthur over the years. Apart from the comfort these visits brought he loved the stories, the news and the laughs you shared together. Thank you to Mike and Mary O’ Shea, funeral directors, for your calm support, guidance and professionalism in organising Arthur’s funeral and burial. Thank you to all Arthur’s home helps who were so kind and caring in their visits ...Breda, Cathy, Helena, Kathleen, Patrick, Deirdre, Bernie and Marie. You also brought local news, laughter and smiles which were just as important to Arthur as your practical help. We are also grateful to all the medical staff who cared for Arthur over the years, especially Dr. John Geaney, Dr. Fiona, Anne Marie, Doreen and Breda and all the medical staff at the Cahernane Medical Centre. To the Palliative care nurses and doctors who visited Arthur at home and the staff at the Palliative Care Unit in Tralee, your kindness will not be forgotten. To Ger Galvin, who sang Arthur’s favourite song, Danny Boy, at the graveside, and his brother, Micheal who accompanied him, thank you both – Arthur would have loved this. We also want to thank the staff at Holy Cross Day Care Centre, Rock Road, for all the great times, singing, banter and craic he had while attending there with his brother, Eugie. As it would be impossible to thank everyone individually, please accept this acknowledgement as an expression of our deepest gratitude. The Holy Sacrifice of the Mass has been offered for your intentions.

NOVENA TO ST. THERESE O little St. Theresa of the Child Jesus, who during your short life on earth became a mirror of angelic purity, of love strong as death, and of wholehearted abandonment to God, now that you rejoice in the reward of your virtues, cast a glance of pity on me as I leave all things in your hands. Make my troubles your own- speak a word for me to our Lady Immaculate, whose flower of special love you were to that Queen of Heaven “who smiled on you at the dawn of your life”. Beg her as the Queen of the heart of Jesus to obtain for me by her powerful intersession, the grace I yearn for so ardently at this Novena, and that she join with it a blessing that may strengthen me during life. Defend me at the hour of death, and lead me straight on to a happy eternity. Amen. C.D.

NOVENA TO THE SACRED HEART Dear Heart of Jesus in the past I have asked for many favours. This time I ask you this special one, (mention favour). O St. Joseph, do assist me by your powerful intercession, and obtain for me from your divine Son all spiritual blessings, through Jesus Christ, our Lord. So that, having engaged here below your heavenly power, I may offer my thanksgiving and homage to the most loving of Fathers. O, St. Joseph, I never weary contemplating you, and Jesus asleep in our arms; I dare not approach while He reposes near your heart. Press Him in my name and kiss His fine head for me and ask Him to return the kiss when I draw my dying breath. St. Joseph, Patron of departing souls pray for me. This prayer was found in the fiftieth year of Our Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ. In 1505 it was sent from the Pope to Emperor Charles when he was going into battle. Who ever shall read this prayer or hear it or keep it about themselves, shall never die a sudden death, or be drowned, nor shall be burned in any fire or shall be overpowered in battle. Say for nine mornings for anything you desire. It has never been known to fail, so be sure you really want what you ask for. In thanks for request granted.

JACK’S ARMY

Okunbor, Murphy, Roche and O’Donoghue among nine additions to O’Connor’s Kerry squad

CALL-UP: Former Kerry minor and U20 star Stefan Okunbor has been added to the Kerry senior football panel. Photo: Piaras Ó Mídheach/Sportsfile.

Jack O’Connor has added nine new faces to his extended Kerry senior football squad ahead of the 2022 season, which is scheduled to get underway at the end of January.

The Dromid native replaced Peter Keane as Kerry manager in October and as expected he has set about moulding his own team which he hopes will be capable of challenging for next year’s All-Ireland. The Kingdom were unexpectedly beaten by Tyrone in the 2021 All-Ireland semi-final and it has now been seven years, going on eight, since Sam Maguire resided in Kerry. O’Connor will be under pressure to deliver immediate results and after keeping a close eye on the recent Club and County Championships, he has called in a number of promising reinforcements. Stefan Okunbor is perhaps the most high-profile of these call-ups. After spending three years in the AFL with Geelong, Okunbor returned to Ireland in September and wasted no time getting back into the swing of things with his club, Na Gaeil, and his divisional side, St Brendan’s. The former Kerry minor and U20 star can play in a variety of positions and his skillset and athleticism has led many supporters to suggest that he could be a potential starter. Okunbor’s call-up is not just significant in purely sporting terms. The son of a Nigerian father and a Moldovan mother, the 23-year-old Tralee man could become the first person of colour to represent the Kerry senior footballers.

MURPHY

Dr Crokes goalkeeper Shane Murphy has been recalled to the fold, three years after falling out of favour under previous manager Peter Keane. Murphy made his debut for Kerry in 2018 after impressing for the Crokes in their 2017 All-Ireland and County Championship triumphs but was subsequently dropped by Eamonn Fitzmaurice during the Super 8s. Keane opted to play Shane Ryan in goal for the duration of his three-year term with Brian Kelly providing back up in 2019 and 2020. Kelly subsequently retired and Kenmare’s Kieran Fitzgibbon was drafted in. When Ryan got injured at the start of

the 2021 campaign, Fitzgibbon was promoted to starter with goalkeeping coach and former No. 1 Brendan Kealy briefly filling in as back-up keeper. Murphy is an expert kicker and his reintroduction to the panel comes as little surprise. He is currently recovering from a concussion he sustained during the county semi-final against Kerins O’Rahillys but he is expected to be back in action some time in the New Year. Fellow Killarney man Dan O’Donoghue of Spa has also been added to the squad following a string of impressive seasons with his club and also in the red and white of East Kerry. The composed centre back captained his district to County Championship glory in 2019 and 2020 before playing a key role in Spa’s intermediate final victory earlier this year. O’Donoghue’s former East Kerry teammate Darragh Roche will join him back in Currans. The Glenflesk sharpshooter has caught the eye time and again in recent championships; most recently he kicked 0-13 and picked up the Man of the Match award in his club’s defeat to Spa in the O’Donoghue Cup semi-final.

STACKS CONTINGENT

Austin Stacks claimed their 13th Kerry SFC title two weeks ago and three of their players have been rewarded with call-ups to the Kerry team. Full back and captain Dylan Casey, energetic corner back Jack O’Shea and imperious midfielder Greg Horan have all been added to Jack O’Connor’s new-look roster. The Kerry championship’s top scorer, Jack Savage of Kerins O’Rahillys, has been brought back in having previously lined out under Eamonn Fitzmaurice, and Andrew Barry of Na Gaeil (brother of Jack) is also back in the camp. The commanding No. 6, who last featured for Kerry in 2018, was excellent for St Brendan’s on their run to the Kerry SFC semi-final. Meanwhile, Firies veteran Jack Sherwood has reportedly stepped away from the fold, following Tommy Walsh into intercounty retirement. Kerry get their 2022 season up and running with an away game against O’Connor’s former team, Kildare, on Sunday, January 30.

Desmond calls time on county career Kerry ladies captain Aislinn Desmond has decided to call time on her intercounty career following 12 years of service to the green and gold.

AWARDS: David and Paudie Clifford are the first brothers to be named on the same football All-Star team in 10 years. Photo: Paudie Healy.

Fossa’s Clifford brothers named on All-Star team Kerry footballers David and Paudie Clifford have been named on the PwC All-Star Team following their impressive performances in green and gold throughout 2021. They become only the 13th set of brothers to win football All-Stars and the first siblings since the Brogans in 2011 to win the award in the same year. Tom O’Sullivan of Dingle was named at corner back on an All-Star team that was naturally dominated by All-Ireland champions Tyrone.

had he not been forced off through injury at the end of normal time. The 22-yearold now has three All-Stars to his name. Tom O’Sullivan, meanwhile, picks up his second All-Star after recovering from injury to bolster Kerry’s defence towards the end of the league.

PAUDIE

Eight players from the champions made the cut: Niall Morgan, Pádraig Hampsey, Conor Meyler, Kieran McGeary, Peter Harte, Brian Kennedy, Niall Sludden and Darren McCurry. Lee Keegan of Mayo is named at full back with teammates Matthew Ruane (midfield) and Ryan O’Donoghue (corner forward) also getting the nod. Ciarán Kilkenny is the sole Dublin player to make the cut. Australia-bound defender Oisín Mullen of Mayo has been named as Young Footballer of the Year with Tyrone’s Kieran McGeary scooping the coveted Footballer of the Year award. Meanwhile, in hurling, the undisputed kingpins Limerick have claimed an unprecedented tally of 12 All-Star awards. Their talisman Cian Lynch has been named as Hurler of the Year for the second time, joining Henry Shefflin as the only other player to win the award on two separate occasions.

Paudie Clifford’s inclusion is a remarkable feat considering that this was his first year as a starter. The hardworking playmaker was drafted in by Peter Keane in 2020 and played limited minutes off the bench, but he was an ever-present in Kerry’s starting 15 in 2021. His displays in the league and Munster Championship were exceptional and although he was well marked in the All-Ireland semi-final, he stuck to this task and was a key component of Kerry’s impressive extra-time fightback. Younger brother David was typically deadly all season long, starting with the opening day victory over Galway when he bagged 3-6. The superstar forward registered a number of big goals, perhaps most memorably the equalising penalty against Dublin in Thurles and the rocket of a finish against Tipperary. He was also superb against Tyrone and Kerry fans can only wonder what might have happened

TYRONE

The Rathmore native made her debut in 2009 and won three Munster Championships and an All-Star over the course of an impressive 12-year career. She announced her retirement via an Instagram post on Sunday. “After 12 wonderful years playing with Kerry, I have decided that now is the right time to announce my retirement from intercounty football. It was a huge honour for me to wear the Kerry jersey. It was a privilege to captain my county for two years. “Firstly, I want to thank the Kerry players sincerely, I have made lifelong friendships with so many of you. I am very grateful to have played with so many top-class players and to have enjoyed many successes together. I am also very grateful to the managers and backroom teams for your guidance. “As a player, I always received immense support from the Kerry County Board especially Seán Walsh and the GPA. Thanks also to Reens Peugeot RETIREMENT: Kerry stalwart Aislinn Desmond has decided to step away from the intercounty scene. Photo: Brendan Moran/ Sportsfile.

of Rathmore for selecting me as their brand ambassador for the past six years, who I have always been so proud to represent. “My parents, Denis and Judy, you both have done everything you possibly could to support and encourage me and there are no words to describe my gratitude. They have helped me get through the toughest of times and being able to share so many wonderful moments with them and making them proud made it all extra special. Thanks also to my sisters, nieces and extended family who have always been very loyal supporters over the years. “To my club, Rathmore, where it all began, a huge thank you. I look forward to what the next few years will bring as we continue our journey. “Finally, I wish Kerry all the very best for 2022 and beyond.” Figures within the LGFA, officials, players and supporters have thanked Desmond for her dedication throughout her stellar career. Her club, Rathmore, congratulated on her retirement, saying that she “wore the Kerry jersey with pride for 12 years. We look forward to seeing you continue wearing the red and white of Rathmore”.

Title 31 for Dr Crokes as Spa fightback falls short Eamonn Fitzgerald reports on the delayed 2020 East Kerry Championship final which was played in difficult conditions on Sunday O’DONOGHUE CUP FINAL

______________________________________________

Dr Crokes 3-9 | Spa 2-9 FITZGERALD STADIUM

Dr Crokes were crowned champions of East Kerry for the 31st time at the Fitzgerald Stadium on Sunday last as captain Gavin White raised the O’Donoghue Cup following a 3-9 to 2-9 win over Spa. Another record was also created when Kieran O’Leary and Brian Looney, two long-time servants of the club, collected their 11th East Kerry title. The record is held by Eoin Brosnan and Colm Cooper on 12 and this duo were key men as selectors, especially in the final minutes of this thrilling final when Spa were on the ascent and looked likely winners. Club president Jackie Looney and Con Clifford RIP previously held the record of 10 O’Donoghue Cup titles for over 50 years. Fittingly, Jackie was overjoyed on

the field after the game as he congratulated Evan Looney, his grand-nephew, after another brilliant wing back display. Also winning their 10th East Kerry finals were Mike Moloney and Johnny Buckley.

CONDITIONS

One can’t expect good weather coming up to Christmas and playing conditions were very difficult. Worst of all was the strong swirling wind. The tricolour on the Dalton’s Avenue end was blowing strongly, not directly downfield but across to the St Finan’s area. This certainly accounted for a lot of mishandling and passes going astray. Referee Eddie Walsh made due allowances and even though the Rathmore man issued several yellow cards, reds weren’t warranted. Both sides gave it everything and for the most part the game was played in a very sporting manner, the hallmark of games between

these two teams. The referee did very well in difficult weather conditions. There is never much between these sides when they meet and the spectators warmed to the contest. Dr Crokes dominated in the first half, leading 3-2 to 0-3 at half-time. Significantly, Spa restarted with Liam Kearney at midfield. The former Kerry All-Ireland minor winner has been plagued with injuries and we may have had a different result if he had been fit enough to start. A great cheer also welcomed the great, ageless Mike Stam O’Donoghue to the field in the second half and the very first ball he got was a well taken point. Typical of the man who has given many years’ service to Spa. Both Stam and Kearney played significant roles as Spa stormed back into the game and by the 52nd minute they were just one point behind after the inrushing Kearney timed his run perfectly and punched the ball to the net.

It was this refusal by Spa to capitulate that kept all of the spectators in the grounds to see the finale. Would they snatch the cup? It was anyone’s game. The odds favoured the resurgent Spa, but battle-hardened and vastly-experienced Crokes responded well to the new challenge. They won possession, made no mistakes in passing in these final minutes and were patient in the build-ups. They were rewarded by an excellent Jordi Kiely point. Two points is a very dangerous lead, especially with Eoin Fitzgerald, Dan O’Donoghue and Mike Foley driving through the middle in search of a goal, a match-winner. They had time for a few attempts, but Crokes’ defence made the correct decisions. Still Spa were menacing and Crokes were not on the winning rostrum just yet. Spa almost snatched it. In wet, slippery conditions anything can happen in a crowded goal. Spa launched one fi-

17.12.2021 nal attack, high into the Crokes square. The very dependable Johnny Buckley wasn’t on the field of play to grab the skyscrapers, but Brendan Falvey proved his worth by fielding confidently and launching the ball downfield for Crokes to make it 3-9 to 2-9. Falvey, the standin keeper for regular custodian Shane Murphy, has done very well. Murphy will be out of action for a long period as he recovers from concussion, Dr Crokes last won this title in 2018 whereas Spa have been rebuilding for several years. Their last victory was in 1989, versus Crokes.

OBSERVATIONS

The warm-ups by both sides were spirited and intense, a real indicator that we would have championshp intensity in this game. Ivor Flynn’s team were going through their paces at the Dalton’s Avenue end, while Gooch was equally enthusiastic nearer the terrace. Colm married Céitílís Ní Bhéaglaioch in Dingle less than 24 hours before the game. This was the much delayed 2020 O’Donoghue Cup final, so it was Gavin White who lifted the Cup. Ifs and buts always emerge in the post-mortems. If Spa had been able to start Liam Kearney and Stam in their two central positions, would that have given them the edge they lacked in the first half of this game? Surprisingly, Dr Crokes withdrew veterans Johnny Buckley and Kieran O’Leary very early in the second half. Too early, perhaps thinking they were so much ahead that this duo could be rested with the game in control. David Naughton had played very well

against Spa captain Evan Cronin, but when the two big Spa man entered the fray, the Croke selectors read the challenge very well by sending the tall Mike Moloney in at the No. 3 position.

FIVE GOALS

Goals galore. Five of them and they were all well taken. First up in the 12th minute was goal scored by a young Crokes star progressing so well all season. James Devane did well to save David Shaw’s goalbound shot, but Evan Looney moved well upfield and unleashed his soccer armoury to give Devane no chance. Then Man of the Match David Shaw struck at a strategic time, seconds before the first water-break. He sent an inch-perfect pass to the speeding Micheál Burns who rifled it to the net to make it 2-1 to 0-3. In the 25th minute Shaw soloed for 50 yards through the middle and unleashed a great shot to make it 3-2 to 0-1. Three goals in just 25 minutes, and yet James Devane still had a fine game. Spa refused to lie down and responded well with points from Mike Foley, Niall McCarthy and the ever dangerous Cian Tobin. Was this going to be a Crokes riot? After all they have been averaging 20-plus points in recent weeks and were now delivering the goals. From the start Spa used the sweeper ploy very well and Tony Brosnan wasn’t able to waltz his way through, as he usually does. Brian Lynch and Shane Cronin confined him to just one point from play. He did kick three points from frees. The wind was still mainly crossfield but

favouring Crokes as Spa upped their second-half game and kept Crokes scoreless for the next 13 minutes. Liam Kearney made a big difference in midfield now that Johnny Buckley had been withdrawn. I was impressed by Niall McCarthy. He got onto a great long ball just before the second water break to score a vital goal which brought Spa right back into contention. Now they were motoring, taking the game to Dr Crokes. In the 52nd minute Shane Cronin made a great run up the terrace wing and Kearney, using all of his height, met the cross perfectly to crash it to the net and make it a onepoint game (3-7 to 2-9). The momentum was with the resurgent Spa, but Crokes did not panic with the experienced Fionn Fitzgerald and Gavin White steadying the ship and holding that one point lead. In that pulsating eight-minute finish, a point from Kiely and the goal save by Falvey lifted the siege. The copper-fastening winner from Crokes’ veteran Daithi Casey secured the title. Great credit is due to all players for a wonderful contest in very difficult wind conditions. The Met forecasters were spot on. The wind really got up after 3pm and this made for a pulsating finish. Man of the Match David Shaw (1-2) was Crokes’ top scorer. Other scores came from Tony Brosnan 0-4 (0-3 frees), Evan Looney 1-0, Micheál Burns 1-0, Mark O’Shea 0-1, Jordan Kiely 0-1, and Daithí Casey 0-1. For Spa, Niall McCarthy matched David Shaw’s 1-2, followed by Liam Kearney 1-0, Evan Cronin 0-2 Mike Foley 0-2,

Dan O’Donoghue 0-1, Ryan Carroll 0-1, and Mike O’Donoghue 0-1. Fittingly Fionnóula Spillane and Fr Paddy O’Donoghue were on hand to present the O’Donoghue Cup dedicated to the memory of their much loved and highly respected father, Dr Paddy O’Donoghue. The late Jimmy O’Brien sponsored the Man of the Match award for many years and Tom Tobin continued the link this year. In the absence of Jimmy up stepped his ever-popular son Jim Bob to present the award for 2020 to David Shaw. It takes us back to the man who passed away some months ago and his fitting lyrics of Dúchas and tradition: “You say tradition counts for naught when two teams take the field, I fear you are mistaken, lad, but the years will make you yield, And when your hair’s as grey as mine, and time has made you old, Then you’ll invoke the truth and dah dah dah…”

When Jamie O’Sullivan scored to put the Lakers 56 to 45 points ahead in the early stages of the third quarter, it looked like a home win was in the offing. Inspired by home debutant Godwin Boahen, the hosts had strung together their best half of basketball this season and, despite facing the league’s top scorer in Manny Payton, they found themselves in a winning position. However, Payton and co. rallied late in the third and in the fourth, and the Eagles consigned the Lakers to defeat. The result may have been unkind but there were positives to be taken from this match nevertheless.

BOAHEN

The story of the opening half was the sizzling display of Boahen (who helped himself to 22 points), the outstanding defence typified by David Gleeson, the resilience of Paul Clarke and the athleticism of Rui Saravia. Emilian Grudov wasn't shy in his contribution either, chipping in with 12 first-half points. All these ingredients saw the Lakers take a 20-15 first quarter lead. At this juncture, Payton seemed to be the Eagles sole symbol of defiance but things took a turn for the worst as he had to sit out the majority of the second quarter with what looked like a groin injury. With Jack Coyne also in sick bay, the odds on a Lakers win shortened. Reece Barry climbed off the bench to keep the Eagles in touch with nine points while the bustling Ronan Cregan proved a bit of a handful. However, the Lakers still held sway at half-time, leading 46-38. Godwin, Saravia, O’Sullivan and Grudov all found the mark in the third quarter but the reintroduction of Payton and Cregan saw the momentum swing violently in the Eagles’ favour. With Boahen taking a break on the bench, the Eagles took control and turned an 11-point deficit into a two-point lead (60-58). The Eagles continued to soar in the fourth. They stretched out their lead to 10 points and it looked as though the Lakers had lost their moment. Cue the arrival of Senan O’Leary, who nailed two big three-pointers in succession. This served to put the wind back into the Lakers’ sails as Boahen, Saravia and Grudov cut the gap to one (76-75) with just two minutes to go. But up stepped Payton, not for the first time, and he scored his side’s last nine points. Try as the Lakers might, they couldn't clip the Eagles’ wings. Payton’s 39-point contribution helped the visitors to a 85-78 win. The next assignment for the Lakers comes this Saturday as they look to avenge the opening day defeat to the Limerick Celtics.Tip off in the Killarney Sports & Leisure Centre is at 7.30pm. As usual all COVID safety measures will be in place.

The Killarney Cougars made the long journey to Waterford on Saturday evening for this National League Division 1 game and once again a slow start on the road proved to be decisive. Cougars were again forced into changes due to further injuries and they trailed 21-11 at the end of the first quarter. Despite three-pointers from Conor Flynn and Mark O’Shea, it was the home side through Osi Oshiogwemoh and Conor Fenton who were on top. They both shot well to give the home side a deserved lead. Cougars had a good second quarter and three-pointers by Jack Lynch and Tommy Bowler reduced the arrears. A

Killarney see off Midleton in Round 1

Killarney started this game strongly and quickly took control of possession and territory. The hosts settled well and made some very good gains in attack.

U16 MUNSTER CUP _______________________________________________

On the 15-minute mark, fine attacking backline play put Killarney within sight of the line and a strong carry through the tackle by centre Shane O’Sullivan brought him just close enough to force his way over. He added the conversion himself to give Killarney a deserved 7-0 lead. As the time ticked away close to the break, Killarney managed to grind their way to the Midleton line and once again managed come away with points. This time the score came from tighthead Dylan O’Brien who was on hand following a series of bruising and effective attacking phases. Eventually not even a third defender in the tackle could match the raw strength and gritty determination of O’Brien as he drove his way onto the scoresheet to give Killarney a fully deserved 12-0 half-time lead. In the second period, Killarney turned the screw once again and set up camp in their opponents half. After 13 minutes, No. 8 Tomás Chambers put real daylight between the teams as he clinically capitalised on a very solid scrum to pick and go from the base, scorching through the heart of the Midleton defence to touch down under to posts. This put Killarney 19-0 up, with the conversion being added by Shane O’Sullivan.

While there was certainly no let up from Midleton, Killarney now played with a little more freedom. They sprung fresh troops from the bench to bolster their side and Dara Stack, who was brought in to replace the injured Gearoid Sugrue at scrum half, intercepted a Midleton attack and sprinted home from halfway to all but secure the win at 26-0. Some strong tackling and scramble defence just held off the final onslaught as Midleton went down with all guns blazing. Killarney managed to get out without conceding at the death to secure an impressive 26-0 victory. A break in matches over the Christmas will give the team plenty of time to prepare for the next game which takes place at Aghadoe again on January 8. Highfield are the opposition with kick-off at 12.30pm.

Motor club to run forestry rally in 2022

Forestry rallying could return to Kerry next year after an absence of 14 years. Killarney and District Motor Club have supported an idea to bring back the Killarney Forestry Rally which previously ran between 2002 and 2007. The new for 2022 event is likely to take place in the Mount Eagle Forestry complex on the Kerry, Cork and Limerick border. Although Mount Eagle is in Kerry Motor Club territory, the Tralee-based club had

loaned it to Limerick Motor Club over the last few years. With both the Limerick and Kerry clubs unwilling to run the event the opportunity has fallen to KDMC. It is understood that the rally will replace the Carrick-on-Suir Forestry on the previously published Motorsport Ireland calendar after that club voted on Tuesday night to not run their event. The Carrick-on-Suir event was scheduled for February 20 and that is the date that the new Killarney event will run on. It will be based in Castleisland.
