Michael Gleeson

Gleeson considering General Election bid Killarney Mayor Michael Gleeson is considering running for the Dáil in the upcoming General Election, the Killarney Advertiser understands. | By Sean Moriarty In last May’s local elections, the Kerry Independent Alliance candidate was the second person to be elected in the Killarney Electoral Area - taking 1,983 first-preference votes and was elected on the first count. Gleeson remained tight-lipped on the proposal as the Killarney Advertiser

| By Anne Lucey Kerry County Council says it is taking action against the owners of a “dangerous” building in High Street. A 28-day notice was placed on the building last August but works have still to be carried out. The prominent three-storey building on one of Killarney’s busiest streets is divided into sections and owned by a number of different parties. The Council wrote to the owners during the summer telling them the property at 71 High Street was dangerous. In the interest of the safety of members of the public they were required to carry out works to rectify this. The works needed were to “render the building safe, such that it does not pose a danger to the public or any adjoining property,” the Council stated. Fresh complaints have now been raised by one of the owners who has approached the Council saying the works

went to press last night (Thursday), and refused to confirm or deny if he was definitely putting his name on the ballot sheet. The Kerry Independent Alliance’s AGM was scheduled for 8pm last night at Darby O’Gills Country House outside Killarney - after the Killarney Advertiser went to press. It is understood that his potential General Election bid was up for

discussion at the meeting. If he does decide to put his name into the ring, Gleeson will be the only Killarney resident to contest the Kerry constituency. Brothers, Independent TDs Michael and Danny Healy-Rae, topped the polls last time out and will be seeking re-election on election day, on Saturday, February 8. Fine Gael TD Brendan Griffin put in an impressive first shift as junior minister but the popular Keel man could suffer as Fine Gael’s popularity wanes nationally. He is joined by Mike Kennelly, also a FG councillor in the Listowel Municipal District. Fianna Fáil has opted for a three-pronged attack selecting sitting TD John Brassil from Ballyheigue as their top choice. Norma Moriarty narrowly missed out on being elected in the 2014 election but easily retained her local Council seat in May. They will be joined by veteran Tralee Fianna Fáil councillor Norma Foley, who topped the Tralee poll in the 2007 General Election but failed to make the final cut. Following long-time Sinn Fein TD Martin Ferris’ retirement, Tralee councillor Pa Daly has been nominated as the party’s new runner. Cleo Murphy from Kenmare represents the Green Party, Sonny Foran from Causeway is on the Aontú ticket while Tralee man Ted Cronin plans to run for Party for Animal Welfare. Killarney Sports and Leisure Centre has been selected as the Kerry Count Centre for the General Election. The hall will be closed from Thursday, February 6, Friday 7, Saturday 8, and on Sunday February 9 and Monday February 10 the entire building will be closed.

Council to take action on dangerous building have not been carried out by other parties to the building. This week the Council notice remained pinned to the front window of a popular barber shop which continues to operate on the ground floor of the building. The notice to the various owners is under Section 3 of the Local Government Sanitary Services Act. Overhead is a large yellow dangerous sign, believed to have been placed by one of the owners. The Council concern followed what is understood to be damning structural reports by engineers. Initially the building was reported in 2017 to the Council after a lower section collapsed onto the street and the street was closed to the public. Slates and oth-

er material have since fallen. In a statement this week the Council said: ‘Kerry County Council issued notification to the owners of this property at the end of August 2019 under the Local Government (Sanitary Services) Act, 1964 and is currently pursuing the owners of the property through the relevant statutory processes'. A number of parties have been written to by the Council regarding the issue. Court action is now to be taken, the Council has indicated. ‘Kerry County Council is currently pursuing the owners of the property through the relevant statutory processes,’ a spokesman said.

Gardai tackle recreational drug use | By Sean Moriarty Provisional figures show that over 250 people were found to be in possession of illegal drugs in Killarney last year - an increase of 38 percent of the previous years 185. Local gardai concentrated their efforts on tackling the use of recreational drugs, particularly during busy weekend activity and at night. The local effort, named ‘Operation Snow’, was all part of a large-scale enforcement initiative in an effort to tackle recreational drug use in the town. Local gardai particularly targeted the busy night-time trade in Killarney and worked closely with the owners and management of late bars and night clubs. Plain clothes officers operated in late night venues and in adjoining car parks and laneways. “I want to acknowledge the support provided by the licensed trade to this initiative,” Superintendent Flor Murphy told the Killarney Advertiser. “We specifically targeted the night-time economy in Killarney.” Supt Murphy confirmed that the majority of those caught with drugs were from out of town, and that cocaine was the most common drug seized during weekends. “There was a significant number of detections in relation to locals too,” Supt Murphy added. “All of these people will face prosecution, but in the case of young people, they will be dealt with under the Garda Youth Diversion Scheme.”

DRUG DRIVING

There was also increased enforcement on the roads in Killarney in relation to illegal drugs consumption and the number of motorists caught driving while under the influence of drugs also increased. Last year 19 people were arrested compared to just six in 2018, and this also reflects national trends. Local gardai also gave talks to the town’s secondary school students in relation to illegal drugs and this is ongoing. “This was about preventative measures, education and awareness rather than law enforcement,” he said. “Tackling the supply and use of controlled drugs will be a priority for Killarney Gardai in 2020 and a variety of strategies will be utilised to achieve this, both in terms of enforcement and education.”

Well-known architect Davide Mosca, who has been living and working in Killarney for over 20 years, has been named as the 72nd ‘Count Pierre’ in Verrès, and is the first person abroad to receive the title. Davide, who’s firm DM Design was behind the new Anam Arts and Cultural Centre in town, is also heavily involved

in Killarney Celtic Football Club and Killarney Chamber of Tourism and Commerce. Last weekend he attended the official launch and he now plans to return with at least 30 family and friends for the February 22 to 25 event in the Alpine village of Verrès, about 80km north of Turin. Legend has it that in 1450 a Countess called Catherine of Challant and her second husband, Pierre of Introd, came

down from Verres Castle and joined locals in a big dance in the town square. This created a bit of a stir at the time but fondly endeared them to hearts of the locals for centuries. Since World War II, every year the town's Carnevale, which is a pre-lenten bash/mardi-gras, features Catherine and Pierre leading a very lavish medieval parade between the castle and town square and four days of partying. Each year the festival organising committee select a new Catherine and Pierre to lead the festivities and this year Davide received the honour – although his late father Bruno and brother Stefano has previously held the post. “It came as a big surprise,” he told the Killarney Advertiser this week. “I am

away from the village for over 20 years and I am out of their loop,” he said. “I was there doing interviews with local television and the tourist board, it was going on until 2am so I asked someone what time does the castle close,” he added. “They told me ‘You decide – you are the Count’.” “The tourist board were showing great interest in the fact there are so many Irish coming,” he said. There are also plans to bring the current Countess Catherine, her marching band, flag bearers and drummers to Killarney for this year’s St Patrick’s Day Parade. “There are hundreds of people involved in the parade. There is a cost in getting them over, we won’t get everyone over, but we are working on it,” Davide added.

Call for river drainage at Kingsbridge | By Sean Moriarty The Mayor of Killarney Cllr Michael Gleeson is calling on the National Parks and Wildlife Service (NPWS) to clarify the legal ownership of Kingsbridge amid fears that sediment in the River Deenagh may lead to excessive corrosion in the area. Kingsbridge, situated at the bottom of Mission Road, directly across from St Mary’s Cathedral, is one of the main entry points to Killarney National Park. In recent years sediment has been gathering on the northern banks of

the Deenagh and is effecting the freeflow of the river. A wall on the southern side is subject to increased erosion and there are fears the wall could weaken or even collapse unless the sediment bank is removed. The sediment bank is also becoming an eyesore and is has become a gathering point for loose litter. Kerry County Council is willing to do the work subject to permission from the NPWS. The Council officials confirmed that they have spoken to Inland Fisheries Ireland (IFI) and that body has no objection to the work being carried out. However, neither body can do work in NPWS property without permission from the Park’s body. So far both the

Council and IFI have be unable to secure the permit and neither have been able to confirm who actually owns the land where the problem exists. It is not clear either, who should take on the job of clearing the sediment. “I am calling on the NPWS to clarify the legal situation in relation to responsibil-

ity of the upkeep of the river,” Mayor Gleeson told the Killarney Advertiser this week. “It is pushing the water to the southern side of the river, and is undermining the wall there. There is the added problem, that should the wall collapse, there will be expenses incurred to restore it.”

€40k to resurface Killarney laneways Kerry County Council has allocated a grant of €40,000 to improve the surface of town centre laneways. The funding was revealed at the recent Killarney Municipal District meeting where Cllr Donal Grady questioned the condition of Well Lane South in the town centre. “Bins are being left out on the lane leading to this area being in a deplorable condition,” he told the meeting. However, Killarney Town Engineer John Ahern warned that the allocated funding was only available to allow resur-

facing works and other operations (like the bins) would need cooperation from landowners and business owners on the laneway that leads from Main Street to the Beech Road car park. “It needs the involvement of Killarney Looking Good, the Chamber of Commerce and businesses as the funds allocated is for surfacing,” Mr Ahern said. “The overall appearance of this particular laneway requires upgrading and will require buy-in from all the various stakeholders.”

Pieta House is an important charity to Liebherr employees who also raised and donated €5,005 in November 2019. A grand total of €9,105 has now been donated to Pieta House.

The stars were at the 2020 Critics' Choice Awards ceremony in Santa Monica, California last Sunday night. The awards, presented by the Broadcast Film Critics Association and the Broadcast Television Journalists Association (BTJA), honours the best in primetime television programming from 2019. Jessie shared the best song award ‘Glasgow - No Place Like Home’ from her film ‘Wild Rose’ with the British superstar’s ‘I’m Gonna Love Me Again’ from his blockbuster Rocketman. “The song is about that emotional journey in trying to find one’s true self only to discover through your journeying there is no place like home,” her father Tim told the Killarney Advertiser. “To share the prize with a song-writer the calibre of Elton

John only further endorses the power that this song.” Jessie also starred in the HBO series ‘Chernobyl’, which was nominated for ‘Best Limited Series’. This week she narrowly missed out on her first Oscar nomination. ‘Glasgow - No Place Like Home’ was one of 15 songs on the Academy Awards long list for the ‘Best Original Song’ award. That list was further reduced to just five nominations on Tuesday, and her song did not make the final cut. “The film ‘Wild Rose’ has brought Jessie on a very exciting musical journey and just shows where dreams, hard work, three chords and the truth can bring you,” Tim added. You can see her in the new movie ‘Dolittle’, which is due to be released to Irish cinema audiences on February 7.

Landmark church undergoing €260k restoration A landmark 120-year-old church on the Killarney to Kenmare road is currently undergoing €260k restoration works. | By Sean Moriarty Derrycunnihy Church, which sits about halfway between the famous tunnel and Ladies View on the Moll’s Gap road, in the heart of Killarney National Park, is managed by the Department of Culture, Heritage and the Gaeltacht. The Department is presently carrying out structural repairs, which is both a protected structure and has become a roost for a number of protected species including the Lesser Horseshoe Bat and a number of barn owls and swallows. The condition of the historic structure had deteriorated markedly in recent years with a number of storms causing holes in the roof. The cost of the conservation project is expected to be around €260k and is being funded by both the National Parks and Wildlife Service (NPWS) and the Historic Structures Fund of the Department of Culture, Heritage and the Gaeltacht. “The proposed conservation works

are essential repairs to stabilise and safeguard the church with the primary focus being roof repairs including the re-slating of the roof with salvaged and new natural slate, repair of distinctive historic metal ridge plates, installation of new rainwater goods, and repair of internal doors,” Máire Ní Chonghaile of the Department of Culture, Heritage and the Gaeltacht press office told the Killarney Advertiser. “As part of the works, information panels are shortly to be erected to explain to the general public the importance of the church and the wildlife habitats. Carrying out these conservation works will safeguard the structure, which is an important part of the cultural tourism offering in Killarney.” During the course of the repair programme, two training days hosted by the NPWS and Kerry County Council will be held at which the project will be presented to local architects, engineers, architectural conservation officers, third level students and local authority staff.

Air Ambulance could be grounded without funding Ireland’s new charity Air Ambulance service, the Irish Community Rapid Response (ICRR), could be grounded by the time this week’s issue of the Killarney Advertiser hits the shelves - unless €370,000 has been found to save the service. | By Sean Moriarty The Air Ambulance, which is based on an airfield near Millstreet County Cork and since its foundation in July last year has flown on 250 different missions. Operating entirely as a charity, the service receives no government funding and all its purchases, such as aviation fuel, is subjected to VAT. Two weeks ago, ICRR Operations Manager Ruth Bruton, put out an urgent appeal for funds to keep the service in the sky. A fundraising drive at that time raised €30,000 but a shortfall of €370,000 remains. The net result is the helicopter may not be able to fly this weekend as there is no money available to pay bills, wages and operating fees. “We planned for 350 missions in our first 12 months based on mission figures from

the State funded Aer Corps Emergency Aeromedical Service (EAS) in 2018, which saw them carry out 310 missions,” she said. “In a little over five months, we have flown over 270 missions which raises our estimates to 600 possible life-saving missions per year. With our increased demand, we need support now more than ever.” Mayor of Killarney Michael Gleeson is calling on Government support to keep the Air Ambulance in the sky. “The Government should immediately accept long term responsibility for the cost of running this service,” he told the Killarney Advertiser. “The air ambulance has a particular importance in our county with its rugged mountainous terrain and difficult to access locations. The air ambulance should be acknowledged and supported as a vital and indispensable health service.”

Columnist ANNE LUCEY gives her take on happenings in Killarney, Kerry and beyond

How Fianna Fáil expect to get a vote in Killarney is a mystery I suppose if you look at it properly there are only three seats in Kerry up for grabs in the upcoming General Election – though why we need five TDs is beyond me in the first place.

MASSIVE SWING

Some of the Healy-Rae vote that brought Michael in with the tide in north Kerry will go back to Fine Gael as indicated by the massive swing to FG in the local elections. I see the swing to Fine Gael in Listowel as a message of regret that their own Jimmy Deenihan lost his seat. Jimmy was very good for Killarney too – think of Killarney House - and we lost out and were foolish in not giving him more support. I can’t see any of the candidates from any party at the moment with the interest of Killarney at heart. Norma Foley is a Tralee girl out and out; Mike Kennelly is a Listowel townie, and the other Norma’s heart is firmly below the Fertha bridge. As for Brassil, he is somewhere in the sand in Ballyheigue. Daly too is very Tralee.

“What have we done in Killarney to offend the main political parties so much? Why are they taking us for granted? These are questions for the door step”

Anyway, with the two Healy-Raes, especially Michael who will be safe as houses, we are only talking about three seats in Kerry. Michael would have to drop seven thousand voters to threaten even one of the Kilgarvan family's two seats. That is not going to happen. They are too much on the ground and on national and social media. However, say the Healy-Rae machine does slip a couple of thousand votes - that would make for a very interesting election.

Fianna Fáil are trying to put it about that they have an understanding with the Kilgarvan Healy-Raes for support for Micheál Martin as Taoiseach - so FF has left Killarney to them. Both FF and FG are targeting the Sinn Fein seat with the retreat of the Martin and Toireasa Ferris.

CAN WE EASILY FORGET?

Two of the three seats left after the Healy-Raes will hardly go to Fianna Fáil. That would mean this county would send four Fianna Fáil TDs to Dáil Eireann! I can’t see it. Or has the county whose sons and daughters are all over the world because of the reckless policies of Fianna Fáil in Government likely to forget so easily, or the people who remained at home and will have to pay the piper back for FF folly for two or three

generations? Even worse, there is the unholy mess this country is now in with the permission of Fianna Fáil. Their heartless deal over the past four years with Fine Gael has little do with putting the country's interest first - it has more to do with Fianna Fáil biding their time so people will forget! And I am now of the opinion that FF are so careless of Killarney, so unconcerned that they couldn’t be bothered to field a candidate - not once but twice! They had the opportunity at the last election with the door wide open to put forward a local candidate – at the time they had two prominent councillors representing Killarney, but they failed. They chose Tralee over us this time out for their third candidate, because the HealyRaes are sure to be elected and will look after the fold for them where it matters – in the numbers game in Dáil Eireann. How cynical can you get! How Fianna Fáil expect to get a vote in Killarney is a mystery. It is the same story with Fine Gael who couldn’t be bothered even to ensure a councillor for Killarney and East Kerry such is the low regard they hold this hard-working town. A tourism minister who acquiesced over an increase in the VAT - that should have been a resigning issue. What have we done in Killarney to offend the main political parties so much? Or why are they taking us so much for granted? These are questions for the door step.

Have we no shame anymore Was it Yeats who said this is no country for old men, and off he went sailing to Byzantium! We would all like to get out of this country we do not recognise anymore. A woman in her 80s in her “golden years” eats her dinner off a window sill at a charity café; another elderly woman whose exact age is disputed by Fine Gael – as if it makes any difference - is thrown out of hospital and ends up of all places on the steps of the GPO. My God, have we no shame anymore? Have we no sense of history?

Housing Minister Eoghan Murphy’s election posters are erected where a man in his 30s suffered “life changing injuries” after the local authority in Dublin bulldozed him and his tent to kingdom come. Does it matter if the posters went up before or after the injury was inflicted and the man’s tent home destroyed? Nobody checked if he was in the tent. Heartless Ireland. The last time I was in Dublin, the canals were like tent city and as you make your way to the expensive hotels in the area where Google and others have offices, you actually trip over the

homeless. "Commemorate me……" I began to myself, doubting very much if this Dublin or this Ireland was what Paddy Kavanagh meant in his Canal Bank seat!

NO SERVICES Oh, but we are creating thousands of jobs each year, and as Leo and Simon boast – 80,000 people are coming in here to work. So, is anyone brave enough to ask the politically incorrect question – where are these highly paid highly educated people living? What hospital and medical services have we

A shuttle bus for Killarney National Park? I can’t get anyone to tell me why Killarney House was closed to the public on key days over the Christmas holidays when there was good walking weather and crowds of people were out around Muckross. And as I am on the subject why are so many cars allowed through the park in Muckross? Streams of cars came through in a row on one Sunday mid-morning, all with various registrations. Surely there could be some arrangement for them, whether they’re there for rowing, cycling or walking to the club so that it can become part of their exercise to increase their fitness even further - and if not, a small shuttle bus might suffice. In this day and age of carbon awareness and of the sacredness of national parks that are meant to be biosphere reserves, we should have as few cars as possible. It’s not just the Sunday morning rowers, to be fair – I regularly meet tourist and other cars and I would like to know how they are allowed drive through the park? Shuttle and other buses are the way forward and would have the advantage of lessening the traffic, keeping the air clean, as well as making a few bob for local business. for them? What education and childcare services have we for them? I watched astonished at the opening programme of the election on Prime Time when no politician of any shade joined the dots. This is boom time Ireland with the beautiful people from around the globe flocking to Dublin, Galway and Cork to take up the highly paid jobs. And no one, not a single person, Sinn Fein, Labour or Fianna Fáil asked if too many jobs are being created by global companies while the basic services to serve basic human needs of the new Irish and the old Irish have not been put in place? What is wrong with asking where are the services for the increase in population? Oh, perhaps it might hurt the economy!

With an attendance of 800 at last year’s inaugural event - where clubs explain about their volunteering opportunities and new activities - it’s expected that this year will be even busier. “Last year’s turnout shows that people want to find out about clubs and other organisations that are active in their community,” Killarney Lions Club President, John Fuller, said. “We are hoping that this year we can expand our reach and attract individuals from all over the county. So if anyone wants to get involved in something new for fun or recreation, the Kerry Clubs Fair will be well worth a visit.” Killarney Lions Club is hoping that in addition to providing awareness about activities that people can get involved in, the Kerry Clubs Fair will help improve health and well-being by encouraging inclusion of people from all backgrounds in their local community, addressing isolation and

promoting the benefits of volunteering to people of all ages. Registered clubs this year include; Order of Malta, No Name Club, Local Link Kerry, Kerry Public Partnership Network, Killarney Triathlon Club, Foodshare Kerry, Men’s Shed, First Responders, Irish Countrywomen’s Association, Tidy Towns, Southwest Counselling, Ring of Kerry Cycle, Kerry Volunteer Centre, KDYS, Tralee Art Group, Toastmasters, Kerry Stars, Scouts, South Kerry Community Games, The Saoirse Foundation/BUMBLEance children’s charity, Macra Na Feirme, Killarney Active Retirement Group, Team Hope etc. “We are delighted to be the main sponsor of the Kerry Clubs Fair this year,” John O’Regan, PRO, Chapter 23, Kerry and West Limerick Credit Union said. “As credit unions are embedded into the communities that they operate in, the clubs fair is a wonderful opportunity for people to support those clubs, by volunteering, learning a new skill and becoming involved in a new activity in your local community.” Clubs and societies that are interested in participating can call 087 8343150 or

Cinema developers seek meeting with councillors | By Sean Moriarty The developers behind the new cinema in Killarney are seeking a meeting with the elected members of Killarney Municipal District Council following recent comments on planning permission at the site.

At last week’s members’ meeting, elected councillors described the new cinema as an “awful eyesore” saying that it was not needed in Killarney. Members also felt the new cinema would add to the town’s dire traffic problems – especially during the busier summer months. The development has been shrouded in controversy since the beginning. Plan-

Kerry County Council, the body responsible for maintaining and updating the Register of Electors for Kerry, is reminding the public to check that they are registered to vote in the General Election on Saturday, February 8. Members of the public who are not currently registered to vote can apply to be included on the Supplement to the Register of Electors – with the closing date next Wednesday, January 22. The relevant form for the Supplementary Register of Electors (RFA2), which is available online and from public offices, must be signed and stamped by a member of An Garda Síochána and returned to the Register of Electors at Kerry County Council, County Buildings, Tralee by that date. Voters who were included in the Supplement to the Register of Electors for the local and European elections of May 2019 are registered for the general election and do not need to take any action on this occasion. However, anyone who applied for in-

clusion on the Draft Register of Electors in the period since the elections of May 2019 is not automatically registered to vote in this General Election as the new Register of Electors does not come into effect until February 15, 2020 which is a date later than that on which the General Election will be held. Those voters must apply to be included on the Supplement to the Register of Electors on or before Wednesday, January 22 as set out above. To ensure that anyone who applied for inclusion on the Draft Register of Electors and to ensure that eligible voters have the opportunity to exercise their franchise, Kerry County Council is contacting all such applicants for the draft register to advise them of this requirement. Kerry County Council has published a list of frequently asked questions on its website to advise voters of these arrangements and recommends that voters use the Check the Register website to check if they are registered to vote or to contact the Register of Electors at Kerry County Council on 066 7183530 with any queries.

ning permission was initially rejected by Kerry County Council but that was overruled by An Bord Pleanala. As a result Council members distanced themselves from An Bord Pleanala’s decision with one elected member saying they are getting the blame for allowing the development against the wishes of the people of Killarney. However, Mark Anderson of the Omniplex Group said he was both surprised and confused by the councillors comments. “At no point during the planning application process was the design of the cinema raised as a cause for concern,

nor did any submission refer concerns in this regard either. The An Bord Pleanala Inspectors Report went so far as to say that Kerry County Council had 'no objection to the design'. You can see our confusion,” he told the Killarney Advertiser. “We would welcome an invitation to attend a future meeting to discuss councillor's concerns. I feel this would be fair and just.” The Anderson family has been involved in cinemas in Kerry for more than 50 years dating back to the Theatre Royal, Picturedrome, the Omniplex in Tralee and The Three Lakes (subsequently renamed Cineplex) in Killarney.

Election delays deer management plan | By Sean Moriarty

Plenty of capers in Killarney!

From singing and dancing to comedy and drama, there was plenty of capers at the Great Southern Killarney on Saturday night. | By Sean Moriarty It was all part of an entertaining night by the Kerry branch of Macra Na Feirme who hosted one of three national ‘Macra Caper Variety Show’ semi-finals. The competition is designed for Macra clubs nationwide wishing to gain experience in producing and performing a light entertainment variety show. Each year a local county branch hosts one of three regional semi-finals ahead of the national finals which are scheduled for Ovens, County Cork next month. “It was a great night, it ran very smoothly and the hotel staff were so helpful,” Kerry Branch secretary Joanne Lawlor told the Killarney Advertiser. Both Freemount and Whitegate from Cork were declared the regional winners following Saturday night’s variety show that was witnessed by 300 people. Kenmare was the only local group to contest the Killarney semi-final but their bid to

progress was unsuccessful this time around. The semi-final locations are decided by an open draw and as a result Killarney contested their semi-final in Mountmellick on Saturday night. Unfortunately they did not made the cut for the final, but Killarney member Conor Brosnan was named as the ‘Best Actor on the Night’. Kerry will host the Macra Na Feirme National Rally for the first time in 30 years in October. The Tralee-based three-day event will include a national awards ceremony, agricultural talks and farm tours. The group hope to include visits to the Killarney Brewing Company and the Liberator Whiskey Distillery in Fossa as its alternative farming tour. “The fact that we were able to run Saturday night’s event without a hitch shows the National Office that are well able to take on the organising of the National Rally,” Joanne added.

Plans for a Killarney Municipal District members to meet with the Minister of Culture, Heritage and the Gaeltacht in relation to deer management in Killarney National Park has taken another step back following the announcement, this week, of the General Election. Kerry County Council had written to Josepha Madigan, TD requesting that a deputation be sent to Dáil Eireann in an effort to solve ongoing deer management issues in the park. Councillors are concerned that there is little or no action being taken regarding fencing and deer culling despite the constant threat to road users. “Or message is not getting through,” said Cllr Maura Healy Rae. “We need a meeting with the minister.” Before Christmas, Madigan, who clearly misunderstood the nature of the problem, said it would be impossible to fence the entire National Park. “The park is over 10,000ha in size, including some rugged terrain. Fencing

Killarney to Farranfore scheme years away | By Sean Moriarty The much needed Killarney to Farranfore outer relief road is still over four years away - despite central government earmarking €500,000 for the project last month.

this area would be an enormous task that is unlikely to result in the desired objective,” she said at the time. This lead to a furious reaction from Cllr Brendan Cronin who had previously led a deputation from the Fossa area to November’s Killarney Municipal District. “They need a rethink, they are not listening,” he said at last week’s Killarney Council meeting. “We are talking about an area from the Cleeney Roundabout to the Golden Nugget [in Fossa].” However, the election announcement this week will, most likely, lead to a new minister being appointed once the new Taoiseach decides their cabinet, pushing the issue further down the agenda. They are also concerned that National Parks and Wildlife Services are not taking sufficient action in relation to deer management in the park. “There were 272 deer culled last year,” said Cllr Donal Grady, “but how many were born?” Concerns were also raised regarding the lack of suitable Lyme Disease warning signs in the park despite deer being known carriers of the disease.

At last week’s Killarney Municipal District meeting, Cllr Donal Grady asked for an update on the project. In their reply, the meeting was told that the project had moved from the Con-

cept and Feasibility stage to the Statutory Processes stage. “Tenders were received in December 2019 and are currently being assessed with a view to appointing a successful consultant in February 2020, subject to Transport Infrastructure Ireland (TII). This commission will run for 4.5 years, by which time it is hoped that the Statutory Consent will have been obtained for the scheme, thereby enabling the land to be acquired and the detailed design assessed.”

TREATMENT: Neuromuscular Therapist Gary Moynihan specialises in treating chronic pain. Photo: Michelle Crean

Treatment options for chronic pain Whether it’s chronic shoulder, back or neck pain, a sport injury or nerve entrapment, local Neuromuscular Therapist Gary Moynihan has the cure. Neuromuscular therapy is a physical therapy specialising in the treatment of chronic muscle pain and soft tissue injuries. Gary opened his clinic just outside Killarney at Minish in September 2018, and

since then has finished his higher diploma in neuromuscular therapy under world leading therapists and experts like Dr Leon Chaitow, John Sharkey, Joanne Avison, Judith DeLany as well as many others.

As an advanced neuromuscular therapist patients are able to avail of highly skilled treatment options such as advanced neuromuscular therapy, structural integration as well as optional myofascial trigger point dry needling and electro-dry needling to treat a wide range of injuries and chronic pain such as shoulder, back or neck pain, sport injuries, nerve entrapment, breathing pattern disorders and more. “With every new patient the treatment begins with a detailed consultation to get an insight into what is causing the pain, after this the hour long hands on treatment begins,” Gary told the Killarney Advertiser. “During the treatment I do a number of tests on the affected joints/muscles to

find out what is the cause of the injury, then based on the findings of these tests I will use the different techniques I have learned over the years to diminish pain and increase range of motion. After the treatment the patient is then given a list of rehabilitation exercises, stretches and tips to improve the outcome of their pain.” Gary Moynihan H-dip.NMT, Neuromuscular Therapist, Minish, Killarney, V93Y5X4 Phone: 087 6533531 Email: info@garymoynihannmt.ie www.garymoynihannmt.ie Instagram: garymoynihannmt Facebook: garymoynihannmt

Local libraries as popular as ever The digital age may be taking over, but the love of real books isn’t declining – in fact, according to Killarney Library, they’re just as popular as ever. | By Francis Foley However, libraries are having to adapt to the modern digital age and are making allowances by developing online ordering, renewal and a wealth of online services. It is more than just books,” Killarney Librarian, Eamon Browne, explained to the Killarney Advertiser. All books can be ordered online and collected later, and for even more convenience there is a service that allows the lender to take the book back to any library in Ireland. Also, ebooks and audio editions are available to the public to cater for the modern local library, which of course is true judging by the list of the most popular books borrowed in 2019. And it is the coverage these books receive on digital media, television and film that leads to their demand at the local library, he explained. The most popular books list for 2019 were: ADULT NON-FICTION: • ‘The Official Driver Theory Test Book’ • Michelle Obama, ‘Becoming’ • Vicky Phelan, ‘Overcoming A Memoir’ ADULT FICTION: •C hristy Lefteri, ‘The Beekeeper of Aleppo’ •E mer McLysaght and Sarah Breen’s, series of Aisling books. • James Patterson, series of novels. •M argaret Atwood, ‘The Testament’ Sequel to ‘The Handmaid’s Tale’. •H eather Morris,’Cilka’s Journey’ – Sequel to ‘Tattooist of Auschwitz’. • Graham Norton, ‘A Keeper’

CHILDREN’S TITLES: • Jeff Kinney, ‘Dairy of a Wimpy Kid’. • Dave Pilkey, ‘Dogman’ • J udi Curtin, Irish children’s author, most titles. • J.K. Rowling, series of ‘Harry Potter’ books. •D avid Walliams’ series of books, most titles.

Topping the list in the non-fiction section may come as a surprise to some; ‘The Official Driver Theory Test Book’, both car and commercial truck editions. This can be explained because of their price and hopefully, because of their short period of use. What also has a great influence on which books are most popular is what is trending on social media or in the news. An example of this was Brexit and the border issue in the North of Ireland which lead to people wanting to find out more for themselves. “Some books just fly off the selves because of trending such as, Graham Norton’s ‘A Keeper’ and Michelle Obama’s ‘Becoming’,” Eamon said. When it comes to the children’s section, J.K. Rowling’s ‘Harry Potter’ series of books is still popular as they find a new generation of readers, as does the works of Roald Dahl. There is also demand for new children’s authors such as David Walliams, ‘Grandpa’s Great Escape’, and Jeff Kinney with, ‘Dairy of a Wimpy Kid’, he added. “The services the modern local library supplies are important to the local community, and it’s a great thing to see.”

The plays present a glance at a variety of characters and situations and you are sure to enjoy the evening in their company.” She added that Alfred Hitchcock is quoted as saying that “theatre is life with the dull bits cut out”. “Maybe that’s because we get a chance to see imaginary situations which include imaginary people - but deep down we know people like these are real! LETTER TO THE EDITOR Have your say. Why not send us your thoughts by emailing editor@killarneyadvertiser.ie.

Dear Editor,

I was bemused to read about our councillors concerns regarding the new cinema, some going as far to say it's not needed, the same ones who pushed for the leisure centre when they were advised it wasn't needed, the same ones who voted for an increase in the local property tax, the same tax that's pumped into loss making publicly funded facilities!!!!

I'd also like to remind our councillors about the hundreds of hours of discussion, and little else, regarding vacant sites and buildings around Killarney, St. Finans, the Aras Phadraig, Pretty Polly, etc., so I say fair play to the developer of an eyesore of a vacant site, creating employment and some consumer choice and best of luck in his new venture. Yours, Brendan O'Shea, Listry

Traffic still a major concern for elected councillors Traffic congestion in Killarney remains top of the agenda as elected representatives of Killarney Municipal District met for the first time this year. Mayor Michael Gleeson sparked a multi-layered debate when he asked Kerry County Council to give an update on proposals to solve traffic delays at two prominent road junctions in the town, at last week’s Council meeting in the town hall. The Woodlawn/Ballycasheen and the Coolcaslagh/Upper Lissivigeen junctions, which join the N22 on the Cork side of Killarney, are prone to long delays and danger as motorists attempt to join the busy main road from the equally busy side roads. Kerry County Council confirmed that traffic and speed surveys have been undertaken at both junctions and these will help inform improvement options at both locations. However, additional delays were incurred as the assigned engineer has left Kerry County Council and their replacement has just only made contact with Gleeson in recent weeks. Gleeson is key to the project as he knows the landowners in the area.

“There has been no progress since May. I stood there [in May] with an engineer only to learn he has transferred to another County Council,” Cllr Gleeson told the meeting. “The new engineer has made contact with me and he now needs to come out so I can show him who owns what land.” The traffic congestion at these two junctions is having a knock-on effect for residents in these areas. Ballycasheen now serves as a rat-run so motorists can avoid congestion at Park Road roundabout and other areas nearby. This issue prompted a motion by Cllr Maura Healy-Rae who asked if speed ramps would be installed in this area. Kerry County Council, in a written reply, said speed surveys had already taken place in this area and as a result speed indicator signs were installed. “There are currently no proposals to provide ramps at this location, however Kerry County Council will undertake a further speed survey to determine if any sufficient change has occurred.”

FAREWELL: DJ O’Riordan, pictured with management and staff from the International Hotel, turned 80 and retired from his role as Storeman last Friday.

DJ says farewell to life at the International

Management, owners and staff of the International Hotel in Killarney officially said farewell to one of the pillars of the business last Friday, on the momentous occasion of his 80th birthday. Daniel J O’Riordan, known to friends and industry aficionados far and wide just as DJ, retired from his role as Storeman after 23 years. “DJ is a local through and through and was a childhood playmate of Frankie Coyne's, one of the Murrays of Lewis Road, and current proprietor of the International Hotel and at the party they laughed as they regaled current staff members with the hijinks that prevailed when they were little Frances and Daniel playing hopscotch and chasing,” Tracy Coyne, General Manager of the International Hotel, told the Killarney Advertiser. “Many fond memories were recalled of the great friendship that prevailed between their two families.” Before his time at the International, DJ had a long and prestigious career spanning such iconic companies as CIE, Pretty Polly and the Great Southern Hotel Group among others, from where

he has many lifelong friends. As well as being a bit of a historian, and one of the most knowledgeable of the Old Killarney Stock, DJ has a great affinity with the Lakes of Killarney which is no surprise since his great-great-grandfather was one of the first Killarney boatman at Ross Castle. DJ is one of the senior members of the Killarney Salmon & Trout Angling Club having sat on the National Executive of the Federation of Irish Salmon & Sea Trout Anglers for many years. “DJ will be very much missed by the team at The International being one of the Old Guard who did things right, first time and every time, which is why we were so slow in letting him go. Now that DJ is getting some time away from his long career, we expect to see him wielding a fishing rod instead of a calculator down on the lakes for many years to come while also taking some time with his beloved best friend and wife, Masie.”

Hellebores is an excellent groundcover plant Hellebores is a plant synonymous with winter, as its common name, Christmas rose, might suggest. Perhaps I am a little late in writing about this wonderful plant, however, I have a large patch of them in my garden and their multicoloured blooms caught my eye. Hellebores like a woodland setting. They like humus rich moist soil which is well drained, and they do not like to dry out. They are an excellent plant to use as groundcover, given a bit of time, they will spread and even self-seed. As a groundcover they are valuable, as their dense foliage prevents weeds from taking hold. The leaves die back in autumn, making way for flowers. These nodding bells are a feast of nectar for winter pollinators, when other sources of food may be scarce. I find planting varieties of three or five plants works best, rather than mixing up different varieties. Single planting works well too, in a mixed border for example. They are also great plants for pots, especially on a north or east side of a house, needing very little care. Planted with spring bulbs and some winter flowering heathers or Gaultherias, you will have a long lasting,

In terms of plant care, remove diseased foliage in autumn, and mulch ground in spring before real growth starts in order to prevent soil from drying out in the summer. Hellebores can be divided in early autumn and replanted using potting compost. Alternatively, seeds can be collected and immediately sown in spring. Sow in a tray of compost, and cover with a thin layer of compost or vermiculite. Ensure your tray is moist at all times during the summer, and germination should occur in autumn/winter.

WEDDING OF THE WEEK

17.1.2020

It’s a New Year and a new start for one local couple who celebrated their wedding with family and friends in Rathmore and Killarney. From the ceremony to the weather, photos, food and entertainment - everything went off without a hitch for Caitriona Desmond and Conor Healy’s big day on December 30. Caitriona from Gortnahanebue East, Rathmore is daughter of Denis and Judy, and Conor Healy from Woodlawn Park, Killarney, is son of Con and Noreen. The couple met on a night out in Killarney in October 2012. Then on November 1, 2017 they became engaged while on a holiday to Dubai. Finally the big day arrived and bride Caitriona arrived to St Joseph’s Church in Rathmore at 1pm where, during an emotional ceremony, they both said ‘I Do’. The bridal party was made up of Caitriona’s sister Aislinn Desmond as Maid of Honour and the Bestman was Conor’s friend Philip O’Connor. Bridesmaids were: Máiread Walsh, Caitriona’s sister, and her friend Eimear Whelan, while little Isabelle Walsh, Caitriona’s niece played a blinder as Flowergirl. Groomsmen were Conor’s brothers Kieran and Niall Healy. Afterwards, some truly memorable images of the day were captured in Ross Castle by photographer Paudie Healy,

followed by a beautiful meal in the Plaza Hotel. Guests were then entertained by popular local band ‘Truly Diverse’ – and although brother of the groom, popular band member Kieran Healy was busy with groomsman duties he took time out to sing the first dance Westlife’s ‘Hello My Love’ to his brother Conor and his new wife Caitriona. “It was lovely, everything on the day went off without a hitch,” Caitriona told the Killarney Advertiser. “The hotel was unreal, there was a fine drinks reception and the food was fantastic. “Ray K stepped in for Kieran on the night. However, Kieran sang for our first dance. He also went on stage a sang a few songs afterwards.” Caitriona, a Home Economics teacher in Mallow, and Conor who is a well-known face in Penney’s Killarney where he works, enjoyed a second night out at the Window Bar in the Plaza on New Year’s Eve, followed by a four night break in Lanzarote. They’re now planning a second honeymoon later in the year.

A WEEKLY ROUND-UP OF NEWS • VIEWS FROM KERRY AND AROUND THE WORLD

INSPIRED BY DANNY CASEY

Five-year-old raises funds for Australian fires After seeing the devastation the Australian fires have caused – a five-year-old boy 17,000km away decided he wanted to help.

NASA's robot monkey ready for Mars mission NASA has developed a new fourlimbed robot which can explore never before areas of planets. The Limbed Excursion Mechanical Utility Robot, known as LEMUR, is one of the latest in a long line of automated astronauts. Developed at NASA’s Jet Propulsion Laboratory (JPL), LEMUR is guided by its own onboard artificial intelligence and can climb huge rock cliffs, using clusters of tiny hooks inserted in each of its 16 ‘fingers’. Astronauts are yet to walk on the surface

of Mars. For now, though, the Red Planet belongs to the robots. LEMUR can explore areas where its more old-fashioned prototypes could never reach. Initially developed as a repair robot for the International Space Station, LEMUR has been used as a test bed for innovations that will help a robotic rover reach the elusive Martian highlands, that conventional landers cannot export. Also, the specialist rock-climber LEMUR already has a younger, more mobile relative. RoboSimian is an incredibly powerful monkey robot with extraordinary

capabilities. RoboSimian, which took fifth place in the DARPA Robotics Challenge Finals, can drive a car, open a door, use a drill and walk upstairs or on rocky ground. Brett Kennedy, principal investigator for RoboSimian at JPL, said after the competition that he was thrilled with the monkey robot’s performance. “I couldn't be more proud of our team and their performance in such challenging circumstances," he said. "The robot didn't fall once, and we never had to reset it, confirming how versatile and dependable RoboSimian really is.”

Little Charlie from Adelaide, who now lives in Philadelphia, US, with his family, decided to set up a lemonade stand and raised $260 USD. After seeing the devastation in the Adelaide Hills and Kangaroo Island, he wanted to do something for the South Australian Country Fire Service. "He woke on Saturday morning saying he wanted to raise money for the Australian bushfire crisis," Charlie's grandfather Robert told 7NEWS. The five-year-old set up a lemonade stand in front of a busy supermarket on South Street, a main thoroughfare in South Philadelphia. On Kangaroo Island alone 210,000 hectares have burnt, more than one third of the island's total area.

Innocent until proven guilty Trump CORNER So, it is now official, President Donald Trump has become the third president in the history of the United States of America to be impeached. He joins an illustrious bunch that includes Bill Clinton and Andrew Johnson. Trump is accused of abuse of power and obstruction of Congress. The accusations centre on withholding nearly $400m USD in congressionally approved military aid in order to pressure Ukraine's new president into launching an inquiry into his 2020 Democratic rival Joe Biden and Mr Biden's son.

It was the Democratic Party that gathered the evidence against him. The House of Representatives, which is controlled by the Democrats, voted on Wednesday to transmit the two articles of impeachment against Trump to the Senate. As such, he has been sent to trial and the Senate will act as judge and jury. However, the Senate is controlled by Trump’s Republican Party so the chances of him being found guilty and chucked out of office are slim to none. "They have a hoax going on over there, let's take care of it," Trump

told Republican senators, who will serve as his jurors at the White House this week. The bigger danger here is, as the USA approaches a Presidential election in November, Trump’s campaign will be based on “I was right and the Democrats were wrong”. He will be entitled to say this as, after all, he will be proven innocent by the US Senate. His rival’s attempts to remove him from office may very well backfire and we could well be looking at another four years of Trump Watch in the Killarney Advertiser.

UK non-smokers receive extra days off Staff at recruitment agency KCJ Training and Employment Solutions in Swindon, England are being awarded with four extra days of holiday for not smoking at work. Despite being a smoker himself, Managing Director Don Bryden has implemented the measure and aims to reward employees who do not smoke, instead of penalizing those who do. "I'm not discriminating against anyone," he said.

"What I'm saying is if you take a smoke break, fine, take a smoke break. I'm not saying stop that.” Mr Bryden says if the prospect of more leave motivated people to give up smoking, he would support them. "Remember, a healthier workplace is a happier workplace. "I'll work with the people who smoke but I do want to make sure that the ones who are sitting there working while the others take their ciggie break get some sort of compensation."

Operation Transformation fever is sweeping through the countryside as five leaders vow to lose the pounds. And tomorrow – the public will have their chance to get involved with planned walks throughout Kerry. Two organised walks will take place in Tralee and Listowel – organised by Kerry Recreation and Sports Partnership, with the support of Sport Ireland, as part of the National Walk Day. The national event, now in its 10th year, has always had a great turnout with thousands of people donning their walking shoes and getting active. Both walks will take place tomorrow (Saturday), at 11am to coincide with the official national start time. The Tralee walk will be based at the Tralee Bay Wetlands Centre (Eircode: V92 HH57) and follows a 7km route along the old tow path of Tralee Ship Canal. The Listowel Walk is a 5km route within Listowel Town Park (Eircode: V31 VK13). Both walks are suitable for people of all ages and abilities. Hundreds of Kerry walkers are expected

to get involved in what has always been regarded as a fantastic day out. “This is the perfect opportunity to shed those holiday cobwebs and to get started on new year's resolutions,” Jimmy Deenihan, Chairperson of Kerry Recreation and Sports Partnership, said. “It’s a chance to face new challenges in the company of many others. The Operation Transformation Walk provides an excellent opportunity for everyone to get the year off to an active start.” Córa Carrigg, Sports Co-Ordinator with Kerry Recreation and Sports Partnership added that the day would not be possible without the support of so many organisations who come together to make the event a huge success, namely, An Garda Síochána, Civil Defence, Kerry County Council, Listowel Community and Tralee Bay Wetlands Centre and the special team of volunteers. “Come along, meet new people and enjoy the day,” she said. “Both walks will start promptly at 11am so please ensure to arrive in plenty of time and savour the atmosphere.”

Skincare and exercise go hand in hand Hopefully by now your New Year resolutions are still going strong. We all try to start the year with a healthy diet and more exercise. It’s amazing what exercise can do for your mind. Just by going outside for fresh air, taking in extra water and a little sunlight is so revitalising and refreshing for the skin also helping with weight loss and change in body shape. It’s fantastic for stimulating blood circulation which is like a detox within the body, flushing out old blood faster and giving the body an amazing glow and a healthy fresh look. The grey look will be lifted from the skin, and this is all before we even discuss skincare.

So keep going and don’t give up, it’s only 49 weeks to next Christmas.... but summer is closer. If you have taken up some new skincare habits, keep going and don’t lose interest. Just like weight loss it takes a while to see real results and it doesn’t happen overnight. You must stick with it. To get the best results from your new skincare routine, it’s recommended to have a facial first to help resurface the skin and peel it back so that the products can show their best results. A few types of facials that will help: 1. G lycolic or salicylic acid peel, depending on skin type and what is required. 2. M edical Microdermabrasion with LED red or blue light therapy for healing, repair and it’s also anti-bacterial. 3. U ltrasonic skin peeling. This is new for 2020 and an amazing deep cleansing facial. All I can compare it to is having your teeth cleaned at the dentist leaving the feeling of absolutely fresh and squeaky clean teeth. That is how the face will feel after this deep pore cleansing facial.

Talk to your credit union about buying a UK car Second-hand, imported cars from the UK continue to rise in popularity with the Irish consumer. In fact, the latest Consumer Market Monitor (CMM)* reports that second-hand cars imported from the UK will overtake the number of new cars sold in Ireland for the first time ever. “While we are firm believers in the credit union, that shopping locally for a car is the best way to go with some terrific value to be had, we are seeing a surge in car loan queries from people considering buying from the UK,” Helen Courtney Power, Business Development Officer at Killarney Credit Union, said. “We would urge anyone considering going to the UK to talk to us in your local credit union in the first instance. Our car loan is straightforward, affordable and fair with a great value APR rate. When you arrange finance with us here at the credit union, you are effectively going as a cash buyer to the car dealer, and may well be able to negotiate a better deal. There are also other advantages, including fast approval, flexible terms and there will never be any hidden charges or fees. You can also order your sterling straight from the credit union and get covered with travel insurance should anything happen while you are travelling to/from the UK.” Helen also says there are a number of factors to consider before making the decision to buy a UK imported second-hand car. She says the following points are the most important; • Buy from a recognised car dealership in the UK and avoid buying privately if

!

possible. Shop around online and ensure you are getting the best value possible. Choose your car before you go. • Inform the UK authorities that you are exporting a car by obtaining and filling out the V5C document. • You will need to make an appointment for a Vehicle Registration Tax (VRT) inspection once back in Ireland, and you will also need to make the VRT payment. • You may also need to pay VAT if the car is less than six months old or has less than 6,000 kilometres clocked up. • You will need to purchase new registration plates. • Ensure you are fully up to date with all requirements and documents needed for importing a car by consulting the Citizens Information and the Revenue Commissioners websites. • Ensure you have also checked out your local car dealership. There is often great value to be found right on your doorstep. Don’t forget you have to factor in the cost of VRT, possibly VAT, new registration plates and fuel to get you home from the UK when importing a car. * Published by the Marketing Institute of Ireland and the UCD Michael Smurfit Graduate Business School. To apply for a credit union loan online go to www.killarneycu.ie, call 064 6623730 or into any of their branches in Killarney, Kenmare or Cahersiveen.

Celebrating 25 years Beaufort Golf Club is a beautiful 18hole parkland golf course set at the foot of the MacGillicuddy's Reeks, just outside Beaufort Village. It has been described by visitors as the ‘Hidden Gem’ in golfing in South West Ireland. The club has all the facilities one would expect from a modern golf club whilst still embracing a traditional, warm and friendly atmosphere. Other facilities include an excellent putting and practice green, changing room facilities, pro-shop, restaurant and a large car park. Our senior membership is also thriving with a very active club that meet every Thursday morning for golf and a catch up. This year Beaufort is celebrating 25 years! It now stands in a very secure and positive position in the hands of Tadgh and Helen Clifford who lease and run the course. Their guardianship of club and course has raised its profile and put it on the map of both locals and visitors from the USA and Europe. HEALTH & FITNESS

Consider your senior subject The money and choices carefully

Advice - By Brian Foley

Brian is available for advice and fitness consultations, Call 087 403 0894 or email info@activate.ie • www.activate.ie

food connection I just finished Ramit Sethi’s book, ‘I Will Teach You to Be Rich’, I heard him on a podcast recently and although I knew of the book, I never had read the original so I picked up the updated version. There are so many analogies to fitness and money that it got me thinking about the classic phrase for losing weight: “Eat less, exercise more”, and how it also applies to money: “Spend less, make more”. They are easy to say but harder to do. Does “spend less” mean getting down to spending nothing at all and just hoarding your money? Does “eating less” mean just drinking water all day is the goal? How about the other end of the spectrum; should we be exercising for six hours a day and how much money is enough? Having worked with thousands of clients at this stage, I know that the mind can play tricks on us when it comes to food and money, and frankly we need to consider the fact that we’re not robots or machines that can simply take in less fuel or run 24/7. In a nutshell, Sethi’s financial advice is to “spend extravagantly on the things you love as long as you mercilessly cut costs on the things you don’t”. There’s more to it, but you get the idea. I like this a lot because it acknowledges

that we are, in fact, humans and do have emotional ties to things. In his classic example, a lot of financial gurus will tell you to stop buying lattes, but according to Sethi if you love lattes, then you should buy them! I would agree when it comes to nutrition. We can even keep the latte example. If you love lattes, then go for it but let’s think about those Taytos and Cadbury Roses we mindlessly munch on at home. Unless it brings you joy, I say you pull a “Marie Kondo” and get rid of it. At the end of the day, we need to realise that complete restriction is unreasonable for 99 percent of us, and if the ultimate goal is to be happy then you shouldn’t short-change yourself.

At this time of the year many Third and Fourth Year students are considering their options for Senior Cycle. Some thought and proper research at this stage paves the way for lots of opportunities for progression onto college courses, apprenticeships, training programmes and the workplace in the future. The main choices to consider are Transition Year, Leaving Cert Applied and the traditional Leaving Cert. Transition Year: Opting to do TY gives students lots of opportunities to develop new skills personally and in terms of the world of work. It also facilitates work experience and subject sampling which greatly assists subject choices for Leaving Cert and subsequently career choices. Students are encouraged to engage in activities that move them outside of their comfort zone, allowing them to take on more responsibility and leadership thus gaining more independence. The TY programme varies from school to school so it is important to look at what is offered before deciding if it is the right option. Leaving Certificate Applied Programme: For students who are interested in more practical learning and hands-on work, the LCA is the ideal option. It is a two year stand-alone programme which focuses on equipping students with work-based skills and knowledge while assessing in a more continuous way. Work Experience is an integral part of the programme, usually offered on one day of the school week. While students who do LCA can’t apply directly through CAO from Leaving Cert, most other career paths are open to them, including Post Leaving Courses (PLCs) which then allow them to progress onto Institutes of Technology and Universities. Traditional Leaving Certificate: Moving into the final two years of secondary school requires students to make subject choices that suit them and allow them to progress in career areas they may be interested in. That said, it is perfectly normal for 15 and 16-year-olds to not

know what they want to do after school. Students will generally take seven subjects for Leaving Cert; Irish, English and Maths, which are compulsory unless a student has a language exemption and four optional subjects chosen from those which are offered in the school. If on offer in the school, some students will also opt for Leaving Cert Vocational Programme (LCVP), a subject which focuses on enterprise education and preparation for the world of work. Optional subjects should be chosen by taking the following into consideration; what subjects the student likes, what they are good at and what subjects/ grades may be required for the colleges or courses that they are interested in. For students who have a big interest and a flair for a particular area for example business or science, they may opt to take two subjects from either area. For students who are considering applying to an NUI College such as UCC for areas other than Science, Food Science and Engineering they will need to keep on a language as it is a minimum requirement, while this is not the case for other Universities and ITs. For students who are undecided, the best advice is to choose a broad range of subjects. Consider taking one option from the following; a language, a science, a business subject, a practical or humanities based subject. By talking to the guidance counsellor in school, students can consider their strengths, results, aptitudes, interests and career areas they are considering before making choices. Further information on entry requirements is available on the college websites and by checking the subject requirement module on www.qualifax.ie. For information on the content of all the subjects on the Leaving Cert course consult www.careersportal.ie/school/subjectexplorer. Special guests included County Board Chairman Tim Murphy, LGFA Chairman Sean Walsh, East Kerry Board Chairman Johnny Brosnan, Fossa GAA Chairman Dermot Clifford, as well as Sean Kelly MEP. After dinner, presentations were made with awards going to Brian Myers for Senior Player of the Year, Anna O’Reilly who received Senior Lady Player of the Year and Eoin Talbot who received the Minor Player of the Year title.

Club members including senior Kerry footballer David Clifford were amongst the guests on the night, as well as many of the clubs founding members. Fossa GAA was formed on January 11, 1970 as there was no football club in the

locality and Saturday night’s celebration marked exactly 50 years to the day since they had their first meeting to set the club up. Guests were treated to dinner, followed by entertainment from local band Truly Diverse and DJ Gavin O’Shea.

“It was a great night, it went off very well,” Shane Kelly, PRO with Fossa GAA told the Killarney Advertiser. Guests were pleasantly surprised when eight club members held an impromptu sing-song of ‘Sweet Caroline’. “It was the highlight of the night. We had it rehearsed and 300 guests joined in. It was incredible and set the tone for the night.” He said the entertainment was fantastic and everyone danced the night away. “The floor was black for the whole night and the DJ kept the vibe going with a mix of music.” Club members have also put together a book outlining its 50 year journey ‘Fossa: A Sense of Place 50 Years 1970 – 2020’, available to purchase in Eason, O’Connor’s, Foley’s Spar and from committee members for €25.

KC Print showcase Irish Motorsport abroad The Killarney Advertiser’s parent firm KC Print, which is based in Lissivigeen, was one of the prime movers behind Motorsport Ireland’s (MI) debut appearance at Autosport International last weekend. The Irish governing body broke new ground by exhibiting at Europe’s biggest motor racing trade fair in Birmingham. MI’s attendance at the show was made possible by support from a number of motor clubs across the country includ-

ing Killarney and District Motor Club (KDMC). Over the four days, MI and KDMC officials met with thousands of visitors as they promoted Irish events to international drivers and fans. The visually impressive stand was designed in-house by KC Print’s design team while designers and journalists from Ireland’s biggest trade printers and the Killarney Advertiser were responsible for producing all of the promotional material that was made available to the thousands of fans who visited the show

over the four days. “It was a great opportunity for KC Print to show off its capability to an international audience,” KC Print Managing Director, Cormac Casey, who is also a self-confessed motorsport enthusiast, said. “Our print business knows motorsport and we know what motor clubs and organisers are trying to achieve so we are the number one choice when it comes to motorsport promotional material in Ireland. The fact that Motorsport Ireland chose KC Print from its initial design concept to delivering everything to the NEC in Birmingham last weekend proves this.” The purpose of the visit was to encourage more UK and European drivers and fans to attend Irish events over the coming season with both the cartell.ie Rally of the Lakes and The Rentokil Initial Killarney Historic Rally set to be two of the main beneficiaries. The late Russell Brookes was the last overseas driver to win the Rally of the Lakes in 1989. The same year he became the last foreign driver to win the Irish Tarmac Rally Championship title. This is a statistic that Irish organisers are keen to address. “We came here not knowing what the reaction would be,” said outgoing Rally of the Lakes clerk of the course Dermot

MEETING HEROES: Dermot Healy of Killarney and District Motor Club with rally legend Paddy Hopkirk and Cormac Casey of KDMC and KC Print

Healy. “The reaction has been overwhelming and we have met people from all over Europe. In my opinion, this should become an annual event. We learned a lot.” Visitors to the Motorsport Ireland stand over the four days included rally legend and 1981 World Champion Ari Vatanen, and also 1964 Monte Carlo Rally winner Paddy Hopkirk who revealed that he has a holiday home in South Kerry and often visits the county. Killarney-based World Rally Championship co-driver Paul Nagle attended on Friday, and London Irish Motor Club secretary John F O’Mahony from Muckross visited on Saturday.

COMMUNITY NOTES Fossa Community Alert AGM: Fossa Community Alert AGM will take place in Killarney Court Hotel, on Friday, January 17 at 8pm. All are welcome. Our annual church gate collection amounted to €564.92. Thank you.

Killarney Musical Society SHOWTIME: Another busy week of fantastic rehearsals in KMS. We cannot believe how close we are getting to showtime with Joseph and the Amazing Technicolour Dreamcoat, February 2527 inclusive, Tuesday to Thursday, Gleneagle INEC Arena, so be warned. Mark the date in the diary folks, I promise it's one not to be missed. This past week has been extra special to us all here in KMS as one of our former members and great friend Jessie Buckley received her first BAFTA Nomination, we are thrilled for her and feel so very proud of her achievements so far. Ironically 20 years ago in February 2000 we staged Joseph and The Amazing Technicolour Dreamcoat in the Arus Phadraig and Jessie was in our children's chorus, what wonderful memories we have of great days in the past. Jessie went on to grace the stage with us in KMS for many more years, her final performance with us was back in 2008 in our production of Carousel winning her an AIMS Best Actress Award. This was a sign of things to come for sure as she

literally left our final night's performance to head to London to take part in Andrew Lloyd Webber's BBC Talent show, I'd Do Anything, and so began the journey for Jessie. We wish her so much joy and happiness and of course luck. In our eyes she's a winner, always has been and always will.

9TH ANNIVERSARY O’LEARY

Thinking of you Mom And remembering you today A life lived that meant so much In each and every way Filled with moments sweet and sad With smiles and sometimes tears With friendships formed And good times shared And laughter throughtout the years A life leaves a legacy of joy, pride and pleasure A loving lasting memory Our grateful hearts will treasure Just think of Mom resting From the sorrows and the tears In a place of warmth and comfort Where there are no day and years Think how Mom must be wishing That we could know today How nothing but our sadness can fade away

God gave us a gentle father, A father who loved us true, You were always there with a helping hand. Help us now to accept His plan.

And think of Mom as living In the hearts of those she touched For nothing loved is ever lost And Mom we miss and you so very much

We miss you now, our hearts are sore, As time goes by, we miss you more, Your loving smile, your gentle face, No one can take our “father’s place”.

Time and years slip gently by, But love and memories never die, No longer in our lives to share, But in our hearts you are always there.

1ST ANNIVERSARY FLYNN

Treasured memories of our beloved Mother Eileen Lyne, Late of 81 Pinewood, Killarney, Who died on 15th January, 2003. A light is from our household gone A voice we loved is still A place is vacant in our home That never can be filled. Lonely is the home without you Life to us is not the same All the world would be like heaven If we could have you back again. How dearly we loved you And prayed you might live But Jesus just beckoned And we had to give. God gave us strength to bear it And courage to fight the blow What it has meant to lose you God alone will ever know. Our family chain is broken Nothing seems the same But as God calls us one by one The links shall join again. Always remembered and forever loved, Your loving daughters Louise, Denise, Martina, Deirdre, Helen and sons John Paul and David, sons-in-law Timmy and Gerry, Claire and Kathryn. Nana, If heaven had a number I’d call you on the phone To say how much I love you And tell you to come home So rest in heaven dear Nana And thanks for all you’ve done We trust that God has given you The crown you’ve truly won. Remembering and loving you always your grandsons Christian, Jack, Ewan, Cian, Adam and Jamie and granddaughters Orianne and Sarah.

In loving memory of Johnny Murphy Late of 2 Lower Sunny Hill, Killarney who died on 21st January 2008. Leave my body wherever it may lie, but remember my soul at the alter of the Lord The twenty first of January, two thousand and eight, A date in our memories we’ll never forget A son, a brother, a true friend. You fought so bravely to the very end Though it was in Cork that you passed away, A Kerry man to the bone until your dying day. When we’re feeling down or a little bit blue, We’ll just close our eyes and think of you We’ll hear you in each wind that blows Or in the fall of each December snow A true gentleman you made no fuss It was Johnny time, no need to rush Now he’s playing with angels in heaven up above We’ll keep our special memories And treasure them with love The month’s stretch on before us So bleak and so long We pray you’ll walk beside us, help to keep us strong, And when our life is over, come to us that day, Come smiling towards us and carry us away And now the time has come, to say our last goodbye, But we’ll always remember you, the apple of our eye We’ll go the rest of our lives and never again will see A beautiful gentleman, our one and only Johnny.

Another year, another messy GAA calendar Despite all the talk of change, 2020 looks set to be as congested as ever for our club and county footballers. Adam Moynihan examines this year’s schedule and asks if the GAA are any closer to solving the fixtures crisis. It didn’t take long for the first fixtures fiasco of 2020 to rear its ugly head. On Thursday last, just nine days into the New Year, Donegal manager Declan Bonner confirmed that his team would not be fulfilling their McKenna Cup semi-final against Monaghan due to a clash with the opening round of the Sigerson Cup. Donegal had 13 players in college action on Sunday – the same day the Monaghan match was due to be played – with Letterkenny IT manager Michael Murphy also tied up, so Bonner and the county board were forced to withdraw from Ulster’s pre-season tournament due to a lack of numbers. “It's crazy, absolutely crazy,” Bonner

said. “Whoever fixed the Sigerson in the middle of this, it is absolutely ridiculous. We have to manage that and be careful of player welfare and we just won't have the numbers to field. We always treat the McKenna Cup with respect, but if you can't put out a team, you can't put out a team.” It appears as though the colleges aren’t best pleased with this year’s schedule either. “They start this competition and we’re not open until next week,” UCC manager Billy Morgan said. “We had no preparation whatsoever over Christmas. [The GAA] is becoming an elite association and they are just catering for intercounty, while clubs, third-level, and sec-

ond-level are all suffering.” So that’s county and third level ticked off already. What about club? Well, bringing the 2019/20 All-Ireland Club finals forward to January from March has shortened the season but it has done nothing to alleviate the pressure on the teams and players involved over the Christmas period. A 13-month season isn’t much different to a 15-month season when you think about it; if the seasons are overlapping at all then players aren’t getting a break. The guys involved in the latter stages of these competitions will naturally tell you that they’re delighted to be there, but that doesn’t necessarily make it right.

2020

Looking at Kerry GAA’s draft calendar for 2020 (opposite), the schedule for Kerry’s club players isn’t much different to last year. That isn’t necessarily a problem in and of itself as the situation in this county is fairly positive when it comes

to the staging of competitions. Players are largely pleased with how the County League, Club Championship and County Championship are being run off – the issue in many people’s eyes lies with the district championships. The 2019 East Kerry Championship concluded on December 15, for example, while things were even more drawn out for the footballers of St Mary’s and Dromid Pearses: their South Kerry Championship final replay was eventually played on January 11. As you can see in the 2020 calendar, the finals of this year’s district championships have been slated for the end of November, but, as always, much will depend on the success of the various divisional and club teams in the County Championship. If East Kerry, for instance, have another strong year and advance to the latter stages of the competition, it’s unlikely that any of the teams supplying play-

ers to the reigning champions will play O’Donoghue Cup games in October, as is suggested in the calendar. Similarly, if any of the district’s senior clubs advance to Munster, it will more than likely push the final of the East Kerry Championship back out to December yet again. If one of the GAA’s new proposals for the intercounty scene gets the green light for 2021, it will supposedly free up a few extra weekends for clubs. Maybe then the district boards will have more wiggle room to get things done in a more timely fashion. For now, unless genuine commitments are made to play earlier rounds at an earlier stage of the season (similar commitments were made this time last year but we had December football anyway) it appears as though we could be set for another long year of football.

AGHADOE

The Cobh Pirates, one of the pre-tournament favourites, travelled to Killarney on Saturday last and were delighted to escape with a narrow three-point victory. Killarney rose to the occasion in a highclass, combative game and played their best rugby of the season during the first quarter. High intensity defensive work and controlled aggressive ball-carrying put them on the offensive. Early pressure yielded a successful penalty kick by prop Ciarán O Brien after three minutes. Killarney’s pace and control impressed and early line breaks by Matt McAuliffe, Craig McKenzie-Vass and Donnchadh Grealy following incisive power plays broke the gain line. With nine minutes gone, Killarney won an attacking scrum deep in Cobh territory. John McCarthy intelligently picked from the base and powerfully took a direct line between flailing defenders to score near the left corner. Now eight points in arrears Cobh realised they were in a battle and intensified their efforts. With a powerful, forward-running game and a slick, welldrilled lineout, they enjoyed territory

and possession. Cobh came close to a try in the left corner after 15 minutes but a Ronan Buckley cover tackle saved the day. The visitor’s attacking intensity was matched, however, by the resolute defensive tackling of the home team with Dion O’Neill, Adam Walsh and James Kennelly putting in powerful hits. Cobh turned down several penalty opportunities either going down the line or taking a running option. The home team remained cool and composed defensively, successfully executing exit strategies and following up with hounding kick-chases that kept the visitors frustrated. With 25 minutes gone a Mark Sheahan clearance kick resulted in an opportunity for another three-pointer when a number of chasers, including full back Michael Óg Casey, forced the turnover, but the kick sailed narrowly wide. Cobh eventually went for the kicking option

with the last action of the half but it also did not register. The half-time score was 8-0 to Killarney. The attritional nature of the battle unfortunately impacted severely on Killarney with No. 9 Adam Walsh being replaced at the break, and with Dion O’Neill following shortly after the restart, the home team were forced into a rearranged formation as usual forwards Pádraic Talbot, Krystian Komosa and Evan Mannix deputised bravely in the backline. Facing a shock defeat, Cobh threw everything into attack early in the second period and following some frenzied forward carries and frantic defensive efforts, they eventually crossed the line under the posts. The successful conversion brought the score to 8-7. Killarney did not sit back and from the restart they exerted immediate pressure. Donnchadh Grealy successfully kicked a penalty on 50 minutes to stretch the lead to four points. Cobh got a break with 15 minutes remaining when a promising Brendy O’Donoghue counterattack was pulled back for obstruction, and with a foothold in the 22 they piled on the pod carries until eventually burrowing over again under the posts for the crucial winning score. Killarney tried valiantly to grab the winner in the time remaining but Cobh’s big game experience pulled them through,

particularly when they turned over a Killarney attacking lineout in the 22 down the home stretch. Cobh celebrated loudly on the final whistle and, although bitterly disappointed, Killarney stood proud having performed so heroically. On the day, props Rob Nealon, Ciarán O’Brien and Adam Cronin combatted bravely in the trenches. Hooker Craig McKenzie-Vass again gave a Man-ofthe-Match performance with boneshuddering tackles and carries. Sam Casey gave a commanding second row performance, aided in the engine room by the classy Pádraic Talbot. Adam McSweeney and Evan Mannix also ably added their shoulders to the effort in the second half. Munster academy players John McCarthy and Brendy O’Donoghue illustrated their class throughout and captain Matt McAuliffe displayed all his leadership abilities. The ever-changing resilient backline of Adam Walsh, Donnchadh Grealy, Dion O’Neill, Mark Sheahan, James Kennelly, Michael Óg Casey, Ronan Walsh, Krystian Komosa and Aidan Keane gave their best collective display of the season, particularly in their tigerish defence and counterattack intensity. Killarney will enjoy a break next weekend with two final home Munster Cup games against Midleton and Highfield to look forward to before the end of the month.

Doolan set for East Kerry Hall of Fame Billy Doolan will be inducted into the East Kerry Board Hall of Fame at the annual GAA awards night in the Brehon Hotel tonight. I spoke to the Kilcummin clubman earlier this week. He has served the Kilcummin club for well over 50 years. As an 18-year-old, he was secretary in 1963. “That was my first dealings with the East Kerry Board,” Billy said. “John O’Leary, a fellow clubmate of mine, was chairman of the EKB at that time and he went on to serve as Fianna Fáil TD.” Billy was a dedicated player for 20 years, winning a County Championship medal with East Kerry in 1965 and an O’Donoghue Cup medal with his club in 1973. That was the last time they won the coveted trophy. He was most unlucky with injuries and that began in 1966 when he broke his ankle in three places. Later he broke several other bones, which hampered

his career. He has served Kilcummin as secretary, chairman, PRO and field development officer. The latter position is one he currently holds. “When you retire from work you are called on to work for the club and we are at a critical stage in the club’s development at the moment. 2020 should see us finish the project and we will have top facilities for players and members to use and enjoy. I am very happy with the progress.” He was events controller for the Fitzgerald Stadium from 1998 to 2010. That was an extremely busy time in the stadium.

PROUD

He is very proud of the fact that Kilcummin won the All-Ireland Intermedi-

ate club title in 2019 and Seán Kelly, a fellow clubman and playing colleague, was there to present the cup. “It was a highlight for me to be crowned All-Ireland champions, as it is so hard to win out at national level. Look at Templenoe last weekend. They were firm favourites to make it to the final with a strong nucleus of Kerry players, but they failed to advance.” Any improvements he would like to see in the GAA? “At local level, I would like to see the final of the O’Donoghue Cup, a wonderful competition, concluded by September as the EKB did over the years, and not playing the final in December as happened this year. “Croke Park needs to send more funds down to the ordinary clubs, who are finding it difficult to raise money to keep clubs vibrant. Small rural clubs in particular are finding it hard to get officers and people to take charge of teams.”

RECIPIENT: Kilcummin stalwart Billy Doolan is set to be honoured at the East Kerry GAA Awards Night.

He is very encouraged by the increasing involvement of the women in all aspects of the GAA. “The ladies are an integral part of the Kilcummin club in all aspects of it and they do a great job. In 2019 they won two ladies’ county titles. When I asked the vice-president what his long service in volunteerism meant to him, he was very succinct. “I loved it all and did it willingly for the community. We set out to win many times, but it is the friendships I have made over half a century that I treasure most.”

MUNSTER JUNIOR CUP: KERRY AREA FINAL ___________________________________________________________________________________

Tralee Dynamos

MOUNTHAWK PARK Killarney Athletic picked up the first piece of silverware of the season on Sunday with a hard-fought victory over Tralee Dynamos in the Kerry Area final of the Munster Junior Cup. A first-half strike by youngster Ian Prendergast was enough for the Blues as they survived a late Dynamos onslaught, which remarkably saw veteran goalkeeper David Hennessy get his head to two last-ditch corners. Athletic now advance to the Munster Junior Cup proper where they will face Aisling Annacotty of Limerick. That fixture is slated for the weekend of January 25/26.

LEAD

Stuart Templeman’s side raced out of the traps at league HQ and when Shane Lynch was denied by Hennessy from close range, youngster Prendergast was on hand to convert the rebound and give Athletic the lead. With Aydan Mulvaney, Ryan O’Carroll and Tadhg Doolan pulling the strings in the middle of the park and Lynch providing an outlet up top, the men from Killarney were very much in the ascendancy early doors.

Dynamos began to work their way into the game as the half drew to a close but with the centre half pairing of Shane Doolan and Cillian O’Regan on top form, Athletic kept their Tralee counterparts at bay. The team from Cahermoneen continued to exert pressure in the second period but despite the best efforts of midfielder James Sugrue and attacking brothers Shane and Darragh Lowth, they were unable to trouble Gary Sugrue in the Killarney Athletic goal. A series of late set pieces tested Athletic’s resolve and although Hennessy vacated his goal and was first to two separate corner kicks, he just failed to bag what would have been a spectacular equaliser. The Blues held firm to secure the trophy, the club’s first piece of silverware since their double-winning season in 2016/17.

T ralee firm behind international kart racing plan

A subsidiary of a Tralee-based manufacturing firm is behind a plan to promote kart racing internationally. Tillotsen is better known for manufacturing carburettors for small engines at one of its Tralee plants but its global concerns and sister operations make several other different components. Since its foundation a little over a year ago, Tillotson Racing has sold over 100 racing karts from its Tralee base and the last four CIK World and European karting champions used Tillotsen Racing products that were manufactured in Tralee in their championship success. The firm exhibited at last weekend’s Autosport International, Europe’s biggest motorsport trade fair, in Birmingham, England, where a new one-make Tillotsen kart racing championship was launched for UK-based drivers. Tillotsen Racing is already active in other countries including The Netherlands, Belgium and the USA “Tralee is the central hub for all of this,” engineer Mark Ffrench said. |

Several local rally competitors made the annual pilgrimage to Autosport International in Birmingham last weekend. Killarney and District Motor Club was represented by Dermot Healy and the Killarney Advertiser’s Cormac Casey who helped look after Motorsport Ireland’s official stand at the four-day event. C ircuit of Kerry route survey completed

Plans for Kerry Motor Club’s Circuit of Kerry, set for April 5, are at an advanced stage after senior club officials completed a route survey over the Christmas break. While details of the second round of the Triton Showers Irish National championship remain fluid, for the time being, Clerk of the Course Eoin Duffin has promised a radical shake-up of the route and hopes to include roads that are normally linked with the Kerry Winter Rally but that have never been used for the Circuit of Kerry. The rally is also a round of the Top Part West Coast Rally Championship and the Moriarty’s Centra Kingdom of Kerry Rally Championship.
