“We’ll fight wind turbine plans” East Kerry locals - in fear for their health and well-being - this week called for an urgent public meeting as plans for wind turbines and a solar farm for their area became known. | By Sean Moriarty
EXCLUSIVE
A huge gathering turned out in Barradubh Community Field on Tuesday evening where health issues were aired as they became aware that 14 wind turbines 190 metres in height could potentially become part of their landscape. Although it’s thought that plans for the project are in the very early stages, locals formed the East Kerry Wind Awareness
Group (EKWAG) in a bid to oppose it - as they say it’ll not only ruin their beautiful landscape but cause a huge disruption to their lives due to the flicker and sound of the “monstrous” turbines. In recent weeks, locals became aware of the plans for the project after landowners were approached by Galway consultancy business Land Solutions within MKO who represent the developer. It’s understood

that no contracts have yet been signed. Surveys were also being conducted on the roads in and around the Knocknahoe, Knockyshehane, Raheen, Barraduff and Carrigeen areas, explained local Margaret Campion. “As far as we know no planning has gone in for the turbines and the solar farm yet,” Margaret told the Killarney Advertiser. “But we have heard through the neighbours that surveys were being carried out in the area last month including an Environmental Impact Survey in the Raheen area.” She explained that this area is not open for consideration by the Council and that as a community they’ll fight any plans going forward. “The developers just want to make money, some people have no scruples. Where I live there’s a lovely walk where I can enjoy peace and quiet. To think that’ll just be ripped up is something altogether. It’s annoying to think people can land in anywhere and see what they can do with it. We don’t know the exact area yet as it’s early stages but whether it’s next to me or not we work as a community and will stick together.” The Sliabh Luachra Wind Awareness Group (SLWAG), who won their High Court challenge in December for similar plans in their area, say that they will fully support their neighbours. John McGarry from Land Solutions within MKO declined to make any comment when contacted yesterday (Thursday) by the Killarney Advertiser.
Smaller than perceived visitor numbers | By Sean Moriarty A recent survey by hotel operators in the Killarney area revealed that the number of overseas visitors, who are staying in local hotels, are well below the perceived numbers reported in the town. Bernadette Randles, the Chair of the Kerry Branch of the Irish Hotel Federation (IHF) and owner/operator of both the Dromhall Hotel and The Randles Court Hotel in Killarney surveyed 11 different hotels in the town centre area. The results, which did not include guesthouses, Airbnb properties, self-catering units and camping and caravan facilities, found that there were no overseas tourists booked into to IHF member properties last weekend. The findings go against colloquial evidence that suggest Killarney is overrun with foreign tourists as locals continue to remain very nervous about the potential spread of COVID-19 in the locality.
Ms Randles said local IHF members were taking every precaution possible to ensure both staff and permitted guests remain safe in the current challenging climate. She also reported a large number of ‘no shows’ from American visitors who made their bookings in February but have decided now not to travel. She explained that one of the reasons there is a perception that there are a lot of foreign visitors in the area is because international citizens who now live in Ireland full-time are enjoying staycations. “I am aware of one booking from an Italian family who were at pains to point out they have been living in Dublin for the last 10 years,” she told the Killarney Advertiser yesterday (Thursday). “Another hotel took a booking from a Scottish man. It was clear from his accent he was Scottish but he has been living Tulla, Co Clare for years. There has been a long tradition of Northern Irish visitors coming to Killarney in and around the July 12 weekend.” She is calling for more Government sup-
port and feels hoteliers are been asked to police the so called ‘self -isolation’ rules. Overseas visitors are required to fill out a locator form and quarantine for twoweeks. Visitors are free to nominate a hotel as their quarantine location. Ms Randles feels this is an unfair position to place hotel owners in. Despite taking every precaution in the pre-booking process she admits that it is possible that some bookings will slip through the net. “I can’t turf them out on the street, I will have to give them a room, but one that is in a quieter portion of the hotel," she added."I would give them the room for one night only, I would report it the HSE and inform members of the IHF in the area. I won’t be able to sell that room for another two or three days after they leave as I can’t ask my staff to clean that room. The Government need to give us clear directions and take charge of this. How can we police it? It is unfair on hotels to expect them to do it, we must protect staff too.”

MINI GARDA: Alexis O’Mahony from Woodlawn lit up when she received a visit from local Gardai.
Little Alexis gets surprise Garda visit | By Sean Moriarty A four-year-old little girl will be the first Killarney child to graduate as an honorary Garda after receiving a surprise visit by the local members of the Force on Friday last. Alexis O’Mahony from Woodlawn lit up with excitement when local Gardai paid a house call as part of their Little Blue Heroes (LBH) charity work which helps children who are ill or have special needs. Garda Gillian Mac Eoin, Sharon Maybury, Michelle Reddy, Emmet Flanagan, John Crowley and Mark Foley called by in a Paddy Wagon and two patrol cars and handed her a Garda jacket and hat to wear. Alexis, daughter of Steve and Teresa, suffers from Pyruvate Dehydrogenase Deficiency (PDHD) which results in side effects that include Cerebral Palsy and epilepsy. Her dad Steve told the Killarney Advertiser that she really enjoyed it - as did the neighbours once they knew why their estate was surrounded by Gardai! “She was smiling right throughout when we were outside with them. She seemed to enjoy all the stimulation as she’s been inside for the last few months.” Alexis will later be given a specially made Garda uniform which is currently being made, her liaison officer Garda Gillian Mac Eoin said. “We put on an extra small Garda jacket on her and her face just lit up as soon as we did it. We’re getting her little uniform made.” Gillian explained LBH is a lovely way to help distract children who are sick or may be going through difficult times. "They go through enough. It’s great to give them some extra special attention. And later this year Alexis will become a mini Garda graduate, she added. “We don’t know when yet due to COVID but it’ll be in the next few months.”

Second lockdown ahead if house parties continue - says cllr A Killarney councillor has this week lashed out saying that the amount of private house parties in town is a major cause for concern - as COVID cases locally have begun to spike. | By Michelle Crean Cllr Donal Grady says he fears a second lockdown as he has witnessed parties in a number of housing estates and says people are getting complacent everywhere especially in shops and when it comes to washing their hands. He says that he’s hugely worried that a second wave is just weeks away - especially if the parties continue due to the Government's decision to delay Phase 4 - resulting in pubs and nightclubs now not reopening until August 10. He is again calling for the Government to halt travel for people coming to Kerry from other counties. "We should isolate Dublin from the rest of the country for a while. They'd do it if it were the other way around. They have over 12,500 cases compared to Kerry with over 300 - how can you compare the two figures?" The seasoned councillor made his views known after it became public earlier this week that young holidaymakers who travelled to the town for a break had the highly infectious disease. “We must cop on. Complacency has set in in a big way,” he told the Killarney Advertiser. “If we don’t get our act together we’re heading for a second lockdown. The washing of the hands has been forgotten about. We’re falling behind.” As of yesterday evening (Thursday) there was one death reported nationally and 21 confirmed cases of COVID-19 bringing a total of 25,698 confirmed cases of COVID-19 in Ireland. In Kerry there were no extra reported cases yesterday, following two con-
firmed cases on Wednesday and three on Tuesday by the National Public Health Emergency Team. The Acting Chief Medical Officer, Dr Ronan Glynn, this week confirmed the “large” cluster in Kerry but he said many of those involved are located elsewhere in the country. “People in Kerry do not need to worry unduly, certainly based on the numbers, but I know that a cluster has been well publicised in that setting,” he said. “We’ve had clusters in many counties around the country and our public health teams are on top of those and they are identifying the cases. I’m not saying that people in Killarney, which has been mentioned in the media, do not need to be vigilant – they do. People everywhere need to be vigilant as, again, we are talking about a disease that can spread when people are well.” In response to the outbreak of the Killarney cases over the past week the HSE said that they cannot comment on any individual case. However, it said that the Department can confirm there have been a small number of confirmed cases of COVID-19 in the region in recent weeks. “In all cases, anyone deemed to be a close contact has been identified and contacted quickly. Although we cannot comment on any individual case, we are confident that correct procedures have been followed in the management of all cases notified to the Department to date. Close contacts are offered two tests for COVID-19. They are tested again seven days after their initial test.”
AFTERMATH: A Killarney business owner was met with the scenes on Monday morning
Under age drinking parties on the rise | By Sean Moriarty There are concerns in the town that the lack of events and social outlets for young people is leading to an increase in illegal drink and drug parties in secluded areas throughout the town. A local businessman discovered the remains of one illegal party near his town centre premises on Monday morning. He and his staff spent four hours cleaning up empty beer cans, spirit bottles, cigarette papers and other litter after what he suspects was a large group gathering near a town centre laneway over the weekend. The businessman did not want to be named as he is worried that the illegal parties could have a negative effect on his trade as people could be afraid to visit his premises as a result of the litter left there – especially in a time when people
are extra cautious about personal hygiene. “Parents need to know were there teenagers are going once they are dropped into the town centre at night,” he told the Killarney Advertiser. “Shopkeepers need to be vigilant too. They are buying the drink in local shops and taking with them some empty coffee cups from the coffee stand – it’s obvious why they need the cups.” The town centre incident comes on the back of repeated, but unconfirmed, reports of underage drinking parties and bonfires in the National Park. “We will investigate all reports of underage drinking,” a Killarney Garda spokesperson told the Killarney Advertiser. Members of the public can immediately report a crime or any incident of anti-social behaviour by texting KILLARNEY, along with a brief account of the incident and the location to 50555.
Calls for fire station to act as back-up ambulance base | By Sean Moriarty New figures revealed by the National Ambulance Service (NAS) shows Kerry as having the third worst ambulance response time in the country - after Wexford and Cork. Kerry currently has six ambulance bases and 10 fire stations - but a plan to allow fire stations in the county to act as a localised ambulance base has not been implemented - despite a promise made by the Health Service Executive (HSE) and De-
partment of Health two years ago. In the first quarter of this year, 27 different calls had a response time of over one hour. The NAS report also revealed that the pandemic did not have a negative effect on response time because there was less traffic on the roads and night life and the bar trade was non-existent. In September 2018, the then Minister for Housing, Planning and Local Government Eoghan Murphy promised that the existing fire service structure would be used to support the ambulance service. This plan has yet to be implanted.
“Kerry, as a rural county, would greatly benefit from this as distance to a patient is the biggest delay factor,” Cllr Donal Grady, who is a former Fire Officer, told the Killarney Advertiser. “This service would significantly improve response times and patient outcome in the county.” Cllr Grady has asked Kerry County Council to write to Darragh O’Brien, the newly appointed Minister for Housing, Planning and Local Government, seeking a date on the implementation of this life-saving service.

Team Geaney on the road again!
Local cyclists are planning to get on their bikes for The Gene Tangney Cycle on Saturday, July 25, for University Hospital Kerry. The group are planning a fundraiser for the ICU department in University Hospital Kerry (UHK) after local man Gene Tangney of the Black Valley, Killarney, endured the bravest battle of his life during the COVID-19 lockdown when he contracted the horrific Coronavirus. His illness resulted in medical professionals at UHK placing him in an induced coma and ventilator to assist in his breathing for three months. He remains in hospital today, and is making a slow but steady recovery. Fundraiser and cyclist Denis Geaney and his ‘Team Geaney’ crew are planning to cycle the Ring of Kerry in line with HSE guidelines recommendations, on July 25. It will only be members of Team Geaney’s crew that will cycle on the day and they are encouraging people to donate to the GoFundMe page: Gene Tangney cycle for UHK I.C.U.
Denis is planning to stop in the usual iconic food stations along the way, the Red Fox, Jack Fitzpatrick’s in Caherciveen for ‘Tay and Brac’, a music stop at Coomakista and Black Shop Castlecove, onto Sneem, Kenmare, and return to Killarney. Gene, together with all the Tangney family, especially his son Feidhlim and daughter Fiadhna, are so grateful to the medical team and hospital staff in UHK. The 100,000 friends and well-wishers who lit candles in solidarity with Gene on Easter Monday night at 9pm kept them all going throughout his long ordeal. “I owe my life to the nurses and doctors in the ICU Ward, the level of care, compassion and dedication I received was unbelievable," Gene said. "I am so grateful to Denis Geaney and his team for thinking of me and cycling the Ring of Kerry to raise funds for the ICU ward."
Free parking at Rock Road car park | By Sean Moriarty Killarney Municipal District of Kerry County Council has this week announced that parking charges have been suspended on Thursdays and Fridays at the Rock Road car park until the end of August.
There has been widespread concern that the new 'Safe Streets’ initiative, introduced to allow town centre visitors to social distance led to the reduction of street parking. “The [Rock Road] measure is being taken to assist with traffic flow over the summer period and encourage use of the
Sixth Year students Caolan Ryan and Mark Cooper joined with teacher Declan O’Donoghue and Principal Sean Coffey at St Brendan’s College to hand over €1,300 to Kathrina Breen from the Irish Cancer Society Killarney branch, which they raised earlier in the school year. According to Sean Coffey, the school and the students were delighted to be able to hand over the funds although it was less than is usually given to charity this year due to the COVID lockdown which closed down schools in March. "The money was from a non-uniform day earlier in the year," Sean told the Killarney Advertiser this week.
"Normally we raise €2,000 with other fundraising days including 'Cheltenham at The Sem' but that didn't run this year as it was to go ahead the day we were locked down. We also have the Leaving Cert Dinner every year where the boys pay €10 which goes to charity and the school pays for the dinner for the students." And choosing the local branch of the ICS was an easy decision, he added. "This year the ICS missed Daffodil Day and it's a cause that's close to the heart of the school. And when the ICS raise money locally it stays in the locality." He praised the school students who "are great at giving to others". "The whole culture of the school is about giving to others and our lads are great at fundraising."

car park which is in close proximity to the town centre,” a Killarney Municipal Council spokesperson told the Killarney Advertiser. The news, earlier this week, that Bird’s Amusements will not be taking up their usual position in the Fair Field car park will release a further large amount of car parking spaces in the town centre for the summer season. Cllr Marie Moloney, while welcoming the announcement, says the move does not go far enough to encourage locals to visit the town centre. At a recent Killarney Municipal District meeting she proposed that no charges
should be implemented in the Glebe and New St car parks from 9am to 11am each day. “Rock Road might be good news for staff working in the town centre, but it is too far out for elderly or young parents with pushchairs. Killarney is a tourist town, allowing free parking in the town centre for locals every morning, before the town gets busy is what I proposed,” she told the Killarney Advertiser. “Otherwise the town will die. When you analyse the numbers – free parking at Rock Road for two days or free parking for two hours every day in the town centre – it is the same amount of hours.”

Man arrested following theft at the Gap of Dunloe Gardaí have arrested and charged a man following the theft of a phone and other property at the Gap Of Dunloe at the weekend. At around 4pm on Sunday a woman was cycling along the Gap of Dunloe in Beaufort when she stopped for a break. She placed her backpack on the ground for a short period of time and walked away from it. When she returned the bag and its contents were gone. The woman was able to track her phone to a shop in Sneem, and later to an area of Portlaoise, using a tracking App that she had installed. She reported the matter to Gardaí in Kenmare who reviewed CCTV from the area and liaised with Gardaí in Portlaoise. A possible suspect was identified and he was arrested on Tuesday following a search operation in Portlaoise. All the stolen property was recovered during this search. The man, aged in his late 20s, was detained at Portlaoise Garda Station under Section 4 of the Criminal Justice Act, 1984 and later charged.
He is due to appear before Killarney District Court on July 21 at 11am. "We all need to be mindful about our property, no matter where in the world we are,” Crime Prevention Officer for the Kerry Division, Jim Foley, said. “Thieves are opportunistic, so let’s not give them the opportunity. Make sure you keep your bag, phone, wallet etc., on you at all times. If you drive to some of our lovely spots here in Kerry and are going for walk, make sure you don’t leave any valuables on show in your car and make sure the car is locked. If you a have a smartphone, consider downloading a location finder App. In this instance, we would have found it difficult to investigate the theft because it occurred in such a rural location. The tracking App and the quick actions of the woman was the key to this.”
Couch dumped in local graveyard One shocked Killarney resident was left upset this week to discover a couch dumped in a graveyard when visiting loved ones graves. Christina Boland sent in the photo of a couch left blatantly in front of graves in Aghadoe Graveyard said that "it's a sad world when people have no respect for the dead". "This is so upsetting. We go to visit the grave to get peace of mind and accept that we have lost our beautiful loved ones and then you have people who think it's OK to dump household rubbish and couches and letting dogs litter all over the place without any thought for the family visiting their love ones. I think it is time for CCTV to be installed before it becomes a free dumping area."
No Birds funfair for Killarney this year | By Michelle Crean After a meeting on Monday between Bird’s Euroshow and Kerry County Council it was agreed that the annual Killarney funfair will not go ahead this year. The decision comes after the Council considered the current public health advice and the information available regarding the COVID-19 pandemic. The Council and Bird’s both acknowledged a long-standing and positive relationship over many years but agreed that it was in the best interests of public health not to host the funfair in Killarney in 2020. Concerns had been raised by Mayor of Killarney Cllr Brendan Cronin earlier this week following the confirmation of a suspected cluster of COVID-19 cases from a group of young people who travelled to rented accommodation in
Killarney town, where he says one person has tested positive for COVID from this group. "This has resulted in widespread concern, anxiety and fear by Killarney residents, particularly amongst the elderly and vulnerable who have cocooned and abided by the health warnings to stay safe," he said. In light of the current major health concerns regarding this suspected cluster, he had called on Killarney MD Manager Angela McAllen on the grounds of public health and safety of the population of Killarney, to immediately request Birds Amusement defer coming to Killarney this year for a period of 12 months. "I wish to thank the management of Birds for their decision not to come to Killarney and their understanding of our health concerns. We look forward to seeing them in 2021."
Old Kenmare Road resurfacing At the recent Killarney Municipal District meeting Cllr Niall Kelleher asked "When will the Old Kenmare Road be surfaced under the LIS Scheme?" The Council replied that the ESB have appointed a contractor to lay an ESB duct and cabling along this private road. It is expected that these works will be completed by mid-September. On the completion of these works, Kerry County Council in consultation with the NPWS, will be in a position to carry out the proposed drainage and resurfacing works. All works will be completed by the end of November 2020." QUESTION: Councillor Niall Kelleher

Why is no-one coming up with a COVID free passport? Tanaiste Leo Varadkar is able to tell it as it is that those travelling to countries on a 'Green List' of safe enough countries will be "no more likely" to get COVID-19 there than they would spending a weekend away in Dublin or Killarney. This is an echo of Brian Dobson on Morning Ireland a week ago – “Why would I be more likely to catch the virus in Mykonos than in Muckross?” Dobson asked. Mr Varadkar said that the pandemic could "go on for years" until an effective vaccine is found and that it is "not practical to cut ourselves off from

travel for that long". This is the firm opinion of this column as expressed some weeks ago in criticism of Tony Holohan’s stance on this, which was unfortunate timing as the column was submitted just before he stepped down for personal reasons. But the opinion holds - we are in grave danger of being pushed back into a state of stagnating isolation.

Compacting Irish and Northern Irish tourists into Killarney is not the answer I feel. We are in more danger from the Irish than from tourists from European countries as a certain house party proves. less when it comes to COVID-19 as the medics were in Boccacio’s days of the Black Plague in 1340s Italy - a fact he comments on in his Decameron – a collection of tales by Giovanni Boccaccio. Science is taking an awful beating right now. It has not come up with a way of fighting the virus, nor has it come up with a way of vaccinating us against it. All the more reason then we need advice on navigating it - which countries to travel to and how to treat the Americans and the English who arrive on our tarmac. We are being a bit caveman like, hunting them with rolling pins from restaurant doors. There are easier ways than quarantine like arriving with a COVID-19 free cert to be presented with your passport.

This is the way countries like Antigua, Aruba, Barbados etc., are welcoming US visitors - basically the Yanks must arrive with a COVID-19 test certificate proving they have tested negative between 12 and 72 hours before flying…. and in some cases the tourists must take the test on arrival also at their own expense. Why is no-one in this first world country coming up with the COVID passport? Common sense should tell us that a health passport, just like bovine animals have to carry, and that was so pivotal during the Foot and Mouth, is the solution.
House parties and Killarney The way the HSE and its myriad media arms dealt with queries all week on the outbreak of Coronavirus at a house party in Killarney is worth mentioning. The Killarney party is probably now a super spreading event in the country. I had reports - the HSE won’t confirm - that there were 19 cases out of the house party involving a group of 30 people and then people whom they met in town went back to houses with them. As early as Monday at least three journalists were submitting queries about the reports of a house party and concern that locals were desperately knocking on doors for tests after someone at one of the house parties had COVID-19. We were fobbed off with the now familiar barrage about not revealing
anything about personal identities, location etc. And there was the damning off record remarks, the real silencer, on how reports on social media cannot be believed and we should not be paying attention to them. Well now as I said to one of the press officers - I have two good sources who are highly credible. It is not just social media with legs on, I insisted. We were also fed a line about some kayaker being up Carrauntoohil and is a contact of a contact and only indulging in very sober tiny house dinners. Either the HSE people did not know, got mixed up, or they were being very creative and really should look at book publishing for their next career. The stone walling persisted helped along by at least some wanting to silence anything that would give this town a bad name. What later emerged
of course was a lot more damning than even we imagined. For a start a letter to GPs throughout the HSE South singled out Killarney. Secondly, over 30 people were involved in the travel. Now it has emerged the cluster is large - very large is my understanding. Several public health departments are involved around the country. Now my concern is twofold - the HSE doesn’t trust credible journalists to give them a proper steer. That lack of trust is toxic. This stereotypical line about social media being fake news being the baseline needs addressing too. Social media has elements of emotion, distraction, exaggeration - but we need to face up to the new normal with regards to WhatsApp etc. Just because it appears on social media, does not necessarily mean it is not true.

Tourist industry give us a break, please Now, am I the only one getting slightly fed up with the tourist industry looking for every kind of break going? This is an industry which hasn’t exactly distinguished itself with its treatment of workers. Service workers - hotels, care homes etc., are the lowest paid sector in this State - this is a fact. Very few workers in the industry can afford to buy a house in Killarney, Dingle or Kenmare, the towns they service, unless they own their establishments. That is simply a fact of life in tourist towns, written about again and again. And now the cry and call is for subsidies, tax breaks, wages paid, VAT lowered, not having to pay any rates at all, to sustain the industry. But a hard question must be asked - how sustainable is the industry? A lot of the big hotels nationwide got big write offs during the expansionist Celtic Tiger era with millions of Euros sucked up by the tax payers so they would not lose their shirts. And many did lose their premises, it has to be said. I am getting slightly tired of it. I sat in a courtroom last week and everyone - apart from the judge, the Gardai, court clerks and other public service workers have been hammered by the shutdown, financially. Simply hammered. Barristers, solicitors, expert witnesses from engineers to psychiatrists, have had little or no work for the last three months. Who is arguing their case? As well as being self-employed, many are also employers. Now, how much of a tax write-off will there be for these silent sectors? Will it mean that there will be no State bills for them? Will there be wage subsidies and rates write-offs? The tourist industry has no minister per se. It needs one to oversee proper regulation. This is where the spokespeople need to start. But I suspect they are afraid to shout too loud because they will rock the boat as the hand is out for the write offs.

COMET: Comet NEOWISE in the northern skies over Barraduff last Friday night .
Local astronomer captures comet over Barraduff An amateur astronomy enthusiast captured stunning images of Comet Neowise over Barraduff last weekend. | By Sean Moriarty The comet has been visible over Ireland for the last few nights and will continue in the Earth’s orbit for at least another week. It is the first comet visible to the naked eye to pass through Planet Earth’s solar system since Comet Hale-Bopp in 1997. Local photographer Trevor O’Donoghue captured the stunning pictures from his Barraduff home last Friday night. “All pictures were taken with a phone. I should have got the camera out, but I was enjoying the view too much,” he told the Killarney Advertiser. “It is visible to the naked eye as the sky darkens, but is a stunning sight in standard binoculars with a golden tail extending out
behind it.” The comet will remain visible until at least July 23 – cloud cover permitting. “It is fading a slight bit, but it is closest to Earth on July 23, so there is a bit in it yet,” added Trevor. “It is visible above the north western horizon after sunset. Conveniently it is located under the Big Dipper and The Plough.” Neowise was first discovered by NASA’s Near-Earth Object Wide-field Infrared Survey Explorer in March. On July 3 it passed the closest point of its orbit to the sun, known as the perihelion, at just 44 million kilometres from the star, a stage that many comets do not survive. It is also considered unusual for the comet’s ‘tail’ to remain visible after the perihelion.
Call for strengthening and underpinning works At the recent Municipal District meeting Cllr Michael Gleeson called for a multi-annual programme of strengthening and underpinning of the lakeside wall/road from Torc Waterfall to the entrance to Dinis. The Council replied that in collaboration with consultants appointed by the TII inspections have been carried out on this section of roadway. Two areas have recently been repaired and further areas have been identified for intervention works later in the year Councillor Gleeson welcomed the positive reply and stated that the Torc to Dinis road on the N71 is within our magnificent National Park as well as being a section of the Killarney to Kenmare and Killarney to Sneem Ring of Kerry Road.
"It is therefore of vital importance to the economy of a vast area," he said. "Two years or so ago part of this road collapsed and seriously inconvenienced many locals and visitors. We must endeavour to ensure that the necessary work is done to ensure that there is not a repeat of that collapse. There is also an urgent need for a walkway/cycleway on the lakeside of this section of road. I am aware that an eminent engineer has investigated the matter and has stated that the lack of the pathway is a serious infrastructural deficit and is the missing link in the Muckross Lake Loop Walk/Cycle. We need the TII/Government to give urgent priority to the the safety of the road and the development of a safe and scenic pathway."
“This is just another way of targeting those that we believe are involved in selling drugs in Co. Kerry,” Head of the Roads Policing Unit, Inspector Tony Sugrue, said. “A conviction for drug driving could result in the offender being taken off the road, thus disrupting the drug distribution network. “Not only that, we are reducing the risk of serious injury and possible fatal road traffic collisions by removing those people who drive while intoxicated. The Drugs Unit will now be adding to the Roads Policing Units proactive approach

in this regard.” The drug testing machine is now a standard piece of equipment that is brought out on patrol with the Drugs Unit. Since this was undertaken at the end of June, the Drugs Unit have arrested four drivers on suspicion of drug driving.
Killarney to be turned into a giant playground | By Sean Moriarty It’ll be all fun and games on the streets of Killarney next month as a new interactive outdoor escape experience will turn the town into a giant playground. The Big Escape Live has been created so that hundreds can play the GPS activated game while still following social distancing rules. The event in Killarney will see groups of up to six people playing against each other with a leaderboard updated in real time giving those taking part a competitive edge. The gaming experience includes teams who have to solve puzzles, crack codes and complete challenges to take down Big Al’s casino in a classic heist. “We’re excited to bring the game to Killarney,” Mark French from The Big Escape Live said. “There’s a flexible start time from Killarney Towers Hotel, Plunkett Street giving people the opportunity to play at different times. But as teams navigate the streets together, they’ll be near to each other which will hopefully create a buzz around the city, especially if they’re playing in fancy dress which is optional! Teams can choose when they play the game as tickets are valid for six months but after being locked in for so long, we wanted to try and create a fun and safe outdoor atmosphere for people to enjoy.”
FUN AND GAMES: Killarney to be turned into a giant playground when a new outdoor escape game comes to Killarney.
The live event takes place on August 22 with teams encouraged to play between 10am and 2pm. Tickets cost €48 per team made up of a maximum of six people, with kids playing for free. They can be booked on www.thebigescape.com/locations.

Cahernane, along with two other Irish businesses, are featuring on Virgin Media’s weekly 60” ad break campaign and will also be promoted across Virgin Media’s official social media channels. Championing staycations since recently reopening on June 29, Emer Corridan, General Manager of Cahernane House Hotel, said they are "thrilled" to be part of the TV stations support programme. The entire team have been welcoming guests back through their doors and are heavily promoting staycations as an option for this summer holiday period. “We are thrilled to be part of Virgin Media’s 'Backing Business' campaign," Emer said. "This platform really helps us to spread the word that we are open once again and are happy to meet our wonderful guests once more." She added that Virgin Media is very pro-business and it’s wonderful to have them help to promote Cahernane House
this summer. "Now more than ever our industry needs Irish people to holiday at home and support Irish tourism. Our staycation offers provide people with a wonderful opportunity to explore and to rediscover Killarney and Kerry once again.” For a chance to have your business features all business owners have to do is send in a short email, outlining who and where they are, some of their main products or services and how they have coped and reinvented themselves through the current crisis. The ideal way to do this is to take a short video by mobile phone including shots of the business premises. You can simply email submissions to backingbusiness@virginmedia.ie or WhatsApp them to 089 611 1111.

Horses checked for Lyme Disease but still no warning signs in National Park | By Sean Moriarty Killarney Jaunting Cars has taken the unusual step of testing its 40-strong team of horses for Lyme Disease due to their exposure to ticks in the National Park. There have been repeated calls for Lyme Disease information signs to be placed in the National Park with the National Parks and Wildlife Service (NPWS) and Killarney Municipal District at constant loggerheads over who is responsible for placing the signs in the park. Lyme disease is an infection that is transmitted by a bite from an infected tick. The issue is particularly relevant to Killarney National Park as deer are considered prime carriers of infected ticks. The infection is generally mild, affecting only the skin, but can sometimes be more severe, leading to more serious illness and even death. At the most recent KMD meeting Mayor Brendan Cronin called for an update on the provision of signs warning of the dangers of Lyme Disease at the entrances to the park.
Internal signs are the responsibility of the NPWS and apart from signs placed at some entrances by the Council there has been no further action on signage within the park's boundaries. This week, Killarney Jaunting Cars was visited by experts from University College Dublin's Animal Chiropractic Clinic who examined their horses to make sure they were not carrying ticks as a precautionary measure and as part of the horses' annual health checks. Results of the blood tests taken by the experts, and sent to the USA for examination, will be known in about three weeks time. While there is no risk of cross-contamination between the horses and humans it could lead to muscle problems with the animals. “We are a fifth generation jarvey family and we never done anything like this before,” Michael Tangney of Killarney Jaunting Cars told the Killarney Advertiser. “It looks like it could become part of the annual health check for the horses in the same way way we check their teeth every year.”

Moll’s Gap speed limit A new speed limit has been ordered on the section of road between Kenmare and Moll’s Gap for the next year. The speed limit will be 60kmh along this section of road from this week for a period of 12 months.
The reduction is to facilitate a road improvement and resurfacing scheme in the area. Kerry County Council says it’s for the safety for road users and construction workers, and temporary speed limit signs will be erected along the route. It will be in place until July 8, 2021.

Ryanair’s flight reductions brings health over wealth discussion to the fore | By Sean Moriarty As life in Killarney returns to some degree of normal, the town is faced with a major issue that will be divisive and will have far reaching effects. This week, Ryanair announced it was reducing its capacity during the months of August and September. Over one thousand flights will be taken out of service during this time and the airline specifically mentioned a reduction of flights at Kerry Airport. The carrier is blaming the Government’s indecision regarding self-isolation rules once passengers arrive in this country. However, airline traffic is a two-way street, it brings tourists and immigrants into Kerry and also allows for local people to visit foreign countries for, business, pleasure or family reasons. Last week, Taoiseach Mícheál Martin announced that all international travel should be avoided and that Irish people should stay at home and not engage in foreign holiday this year - a statement which influenced Ryanair’s decision. “We call on the Irish Government to remove all travel restrictions between Ireland and the EU (almost all of whom have lower COVID-19 case rates than Ireland) as a matter of urgency, so that Ireland’s hotels, guest houses, restaurants and other tourism providers can
recover their business and minimise job losses before we reach the downturn winter period,” a company statement said. The news will have a massive impact on Kerry Airport, especially after it managed to trade though the national shutdown without any job losses. The airport was contacted for a comment but did not reply before the Killarney Advertiser closed for press. All of this comes after there was increasing concern about a number of flights from US cities last weekend – including New York, Texas, California into Dublin. Many of these visitors are believed to have stayed in the Killarney area. There has been widespread calls to create more robust self-quarantine rules or even to close airports altogether. But at what cost? Can Kerry Airport and the wider tourism industry in Killarney cope with Ryanair’s decision to reduce flights or has it, by default, done the right thing and reduced the number of foreign visitors likely to arrive in Kerry over the next two months. HAVE YOUR SAY: Is Ryanair’s decision right or wrong? Could the reduction of visitors have grave consequences for our airport? Email journalist Sean Moriarty sean@ killarneyadvertiser.ie with your
As tourists from throughout Ireland arrived in Killarney, the prospect of this summer’s season being partially saved was overshadowed by the spectre of Americans also holidaying here. Reported sightings of Americans in Killarney raise the serious question of the effectiveness of Ireland’s travel policy. It is clear that the two-week quarantine for those entering Ireland isn’t working. With no legal requirements to follow the 14-day self-isolation, do we seriously believe that anyone travelling from the US to Ireland would voluntarily stay in a hotel for that period of time? Our Government continues to insist that all non-essential travel should be avoided and maybe there isn’t a large volume of Americans coming in, but rather than depending on an ineffective and voluntary measure that banks on the honesty of the individuals, surely flights from the global epicentre of the Coronavirus should be banned? In the coming weeks, Killarney will see more and more people visiting our town. For many of the town’s businesses, domestic tourism will be a lifesaver in these difficult times. By failing to properly police our borders, we risk jeopardising whatever tourist season we have left. In 2017, 1.83 million Americans visited Ireland, and for decades Killarney has welcomed American tourists. The fact that in normal times, on the 4th of July, Killarney holds a parade in honour of
America’s Independence Day is a testament to how welcoming our town has been. But, at this moment in time, with the daily number of new cases breaking records in the US and with an occupant in the White House who has failed to take this virus seriously, it would be short-sighted of us to let our guard down. Have we forgotten how quick Trump was to ban J1s and other visas, gleefully predicting that the absence of immigrants would mean more jobs for Americans? While we should not be surprised at Trump opportunistically using a crisis to undermine the contribution of immigrants to the US, we should not expect our own Government to feebly stand by an ineffective travel policy. It is important that we ensure the virus is not once more imported into Ireland - not only because a second wave brought in by tourists would further devastate our struggling hospitality industry - but because it would mean all the months of lockdown that we endured were for nothing. The US acted decisively in closing its borders to outsiders, but it failed to act decisively in stopping the spread of the virus within its own States. Ireland has competently brought the spread of the virus to a halt internally and if we are to truly save this summer, the new challenge lies in how we manage those that enter this country.

For the last two weeks we've reported about the installation of the new bollards and footpath widening measures in the town centre implemented by the Council to increase social distancing for pedestrians. Businesses owners and locals said they are all for health and safety first - but questioned why so many were installed as it's taking up too many parking spaces in College St, High St, Kenmare Place, New St, and Beech Rd. TD welcomes news that COVID payments will be back paid Minister for Employment Affairs and Social Protection Heather Humphreys has assured pandemic unemployment payment claimants that any back payments owing will be processed and claimants will be notified.
EXCLUSIVE
She made her remarks while answering a question placed by Deputy Michael Healy-Rae who asked the Minister for Employment Affairs and Social Protection if persons will receive back payment in cases in which there was a delay in receiving the pandemic unemployment payment. “It is only fair they would get back money considering it was through no fault of their own that they did not get their money on time at the beginning of the scheme which to date has seen 7.8 million payments issued at a cost of over €2.7 billion,” Deputy Michael Healy-Rae said. The emergency COVID-19 Pandemic Unemployment Payment was introduced as a time-limited emergency measure so that payments can be made as quickly as possible to the large number of people who have become fully unemployed due to the pandemic. “It will take time to review all of the applications and assess for back pay-

Labour leader Alan Kelly in Killarney today | By Sean Moriarty Labour Party leader Alan Kelly will be in Killarney later today (Friday) and will visit the Ballyspillane Family Resource Centre as part of his official one day visit to the town. Mr Kelly is in Killarney on the invitation of local Labour Councillor Marie Moloney. She is a former resident of Ballyspillane but is keen to push some the great projects that are going on in an estate that has been troubled by anti-social behaviour for a number of years. “There is a great family resource centre up there," she told the Killarney Advertiser. "There are great people living there and they are an example of what can be done. That is why I am bringing Alan Kelly up there – so he can see for himself the
great things that are going on.” Last week Cllr Moloney put a motion before a meeting of Killarney Municipal District calling for CCTV to be installed in Ballyspillane in an effort to stop anti-social behaviour in the estate. There is also a particular problem with unauthorised road bowling taking place in the area. “Every second night they are bowling up there and the elderly are terrified. CCTV would alleviate the problem,” she told the meeting. Cllr Moloney is pushing to restore the area’s good name after years of anti-social behaviour, carried out by a small minority, but has tarnished the estate’s reputation. Mr Kelly will also meet with local members of the Irish Hotel Federation (IHF) and other tourism industry chiefs as part of his visit.
Local hotel receives Fáilte Ireland COVID-19 Safety Charter The Randles Hotel Group, which includes the Dromhall Hotel and Randles Hotel Killarney are delighted to announce that they have been accredited with the Fáilte Ireland COVID-19 Safety Charter. | By Michelle Crean The Charter, which is a Government-endorsed initiative to reinforce confidence to visitors of tourism businesses, can now be proudly displayed on their premises and websites to assure customers that their properties are safe spaces. “Our customers and our team are of paramount importance to us and receiving the Failte Ireland stamp of approval means that our well-known family hotels have successfully met all the service and adaption specifications outlined by the Government and Fáilte Ireland's specific guidelines for hotels," Tom Randles said. In order to be permitted to display the
stamp, businesses have to meet a high standard, including ensuring all employees have been trained in COVID-19 safety and hygiene measures. “All Randles and Dromhall Hotel employees undertook a range of comprehensive training programmes ahead of both hotels reopening, including training on safety measures as well as guidance for their own well-being and recognising and acknowledging the concerns of both colleagues and guests,” Bernadette Randles added. Both hotels also acknowledge Kerry County Council and the exceptional work and support provided with the regards to training programmes and courses for businesses locally.

SIMPLY BEAUTIFUL
Beauty - By Jill O'Donoghue

Time to sort out your feet with a deluxe pedicure It’s that time of the year when we have our feet out, so it is important to make them presentable. At the weekend, I got the time to paint my toe nails for the first time this year and I’m really glad I did. It gives you a holiday feel even if you're not going away. It dresses up any open toe shoe or sandal. Choose a neutral colour and it will go with everything. It’s such a fabulous treat to have a pedicure, you will feel like you're walking on clouds after and the toe paint is a reminder of your fabulous pamper hour in the American style jacuzzi jets and back massaging chair. Your feet take a beating every day. If they start to hurt you need to take that seriously. Corns, calluses, ingrown toe nails, and hard skin, can be a thing of the past when you have a medical pedicure. Your feet can develop certain health problems because they are the furthest from your heart which pumps blood to your feet through arteries. Sever-
al medical conditions can also reduce blood flow to the feet which could limit oxygen rich blood to the legs which they need to thrive and work without pains and aches. You should never ignore any foot related conditions or try to suffer through them. If you have a pain in your foot or toe nail it can affect your entire mood and energy levels. With the services of a qualified foot health practitioner available, neglected feet will be a thing of the past. A deluxe pedicure starts with a foot soak and jacuzzi jets, toe nailss are then clipped and filed with cuticles pushed back and removed if necessary. A foot scrub is applied and rubbed in all the way up to knees and a rasp is used to remove the extra stubborn areas. Then a foot lotion is applied and massaged in for beautiful soft skin on both legs and feet. All aspects of foot health, pedicure and toe nail painting, call Jill to book an appointment 064 6632966.

which are being compounded by COVID-19. The Irish Society for Colitis and Crohn’s Disease (ISCC) in partnership with Janssen Sciences Ireland UC, launched the podcast this week to provide practical advice and information for people living with IBD in a digital format that can

"Gutcast will be a lifeline for those who have just been diagnosed, or are living with IBD, to better understand how to live a full and active life and how to navigate difficult situations like the one we find ourselves in now. The Gutcast series was designed to empower people to self-manage their illness in a really positive way.”
American creates Jenga building record An American man has managed to beat his own Jenga building record - by stacking a whopping 485 blocks on top of just one of the game’s pieces. Last year, Tai Star Valianti - who is described by Guinness World Records as a “Master Jenga Stacker” built a similar tower with 353 blocks to claim the record for most Jenga blocks stacked on one vertical Jenga piece. The most incredible part of the tower is that as Tai builds, he expands it outwards from the single Jenga block giving it a physics-defying appearance. Surprisingly, the centre remains hollow where the first standing Jenga block is placed. "The tower stood for almost nine minutes before I got my son to come in and knock it down,” Valianti said in a YouTube video demonstrating its construction from start to finish.
Damning book by Trump’s niece Donald Trump’s niece Mary Trump’s tell-all book about the President was published on Tuesday. President Trump tried to prevent the publication. ‘Too Much - Never Enough’ reveals the fractious relationship he shared with his brothers Robert and Fred and how bullying and narcissism were normal parts of their lives.
Fred, Mary's father, died in 1981 and his daughter claims it was due to poor health – and alcohol addiction - as a result of his younger brother and her grandfather Fred Senior’s constant bullying. She claims these actions shaped the current Trump and after witnessing him destroy her family she says he is capable of destroying her country. Ms Trump, a psychologist and Donald's only niece, wrote in the
book that she had "no problem calling Donald a narcissist - he meets all nine criteria as outlined in the Diagnostic And Statistical Manual Of Mental Disorders”. Robert Trump - Donald's younger brother - had attempted to stop the book from being released, claiming it contained private information about their family. Conversely, President Trump does not drink alcohol after witnessing the damage done to his brother.

Mammoth 2,220km cycle for stem cell transplant unit One man plans a gruelling eight day cycle of 2,220km along the Wild Atlantic Way from tomorrow (Saturday) for St James' Hospital, Dublin.
FUNDS: INTO President Mary Magner and INTO Deputy Secretary General Noel Ward present €55,000 to CMRF Crumlin Schools and Youth Development Executive Sinead Nolan. CMRF Crumlin Head of Community Fundraising Antoinette Kelly and Hospital Liaison Manager Gerry Cully are delighted that the funds raised will further support research into Inflammatory Bowel Disease (IBD).
€55,000 raised for Ireland’s sickest children A massive €55,000 has been raised by the INTO, teachers’ union, for CMRF Crumlin, which is part of the Children’s Health Foundation family. This year due to COVID-19 restrictions and social distancing guidelines, tickets were available online from €10 with the chance to win incredible prizes up to a value of €10,000. All proceeds from the 2020 draw will provide continued support for the Inflammatory Bowel Disease (IBD) research project in the National Children's Research Centre (NCRC). The hospital treats upwards of 150,000 children each year from all over Ireland. “The INTO is delighted and very proud to once again support CMRF through their annual members’ raffle," Mary Magner, President of the INTO, said. “Thank you to our members in county Kerry for their generosity in raising
€55,000 in the 2020 raffle. This year despite restrictions with COVID-19, our members got behind the online raffle. It will benefit thousands of children all over Ireland in their most vulnerable sick moments, and their parents through periods of strain and worry.” The Children’s Medical and Research Foundation (CMRF) Crumlin, the fundraising body for CHI at Crumlin and the National Children’s Research Centre, has praised the INTO for their continued fundraising. “Every year, we meet fundraising groups like the INTO and we’re just overwhelmed by their generosity and their ability to create such a fantastic fundraiser,” Chief Executive of Children’s Health Foundation, Denise Fitzgerald, said. “On behalf of all the children that these funds will ultimately benefit through the research funded we thank the INTO for their amazing ongoing support.”
Gardaí issue warning over youth bank accounts Gardaí are appealing to the public, particularly younger people, not to let anyone else use their bank account. The warning follows an arrest made in West Cork last week in relation to suspected money laundering. The man, aged in early 20s, is believed to have allowed a large quantity of cash be lodged and transferred using his account. He
was detained under Section 4 of the Criminal Justice Act and later released. A file will be prepared for the Director of Public Prosecutions. Situations like this normally involve a person known as a 'Money Mule', a practice which usually involves criminals recruiting young people to help launder stolen or illegal money using their bank account – often unwittingly.
Hendrik Ketelaar, plans to undertake the mammoth challenge from Kinsale, and plans to finish on July 26 at the Peace Bridge in Derry. Hendrik is doing this in honour of and with the blessing of the Bone Marrow for Leukaemia Trust (BMLT) which supports the stem cell transplant unit (the Birkitt Ward) in St James' Hospital, Dublin which saved the life of his sister-in-law Niamh O'Callaghan's brother Gary, and the lives of so many others from all over this country over the past 25 years. With funds from public donations, the Trust contributes to research into stem cell treatment, provides support to patients and their families and assists the continuation of the work of the Birkitt Ward. The BMLT does not receive Government funding and relies solely on donations and its supporters to continue this essential service. The O'Callaghan family are eternally grateful for all that they have done to help not just Gary but many hundreds of others, Niamh O'Callaghan explained. "We hope to raise essential funds for the BMLT and a small portion of funds raised will go to youth in sport in Crusheen where Hendrik lives with his wife (my sister) Laura O'Callaghan and their three sons Cian (19), Luke (17) and Roan (13), who are all long time members of Crusheen GAA, she said. "Our hope is to raise awareness about BMLT who provide incredible support to people like Gary who, with an illness as serious as lymphoma, hodgkins/
non-hodgkins and leukaemia is devastating in so many ways not just to the individual fighting for their lives but to their family, physically, emotionally, financially the stress of this on top of facing a life threatening and sadly, for some resulting in the loss of a loved one. We were so incredibly lucky that Gary survived this illness. He was first diagnosed on New Years Eve 2014, his children were aged 10 and six at that time. This has been an incredibly long journey and affects so many around the person struck down with this illness." You can follow Hendrik on his Wild Atlantic Cycle on Twitter: @bonemarrowtrust (Hendriks Wild Atlantic Cycle) and donations can be made to GoFundMe.com: Hendrik's Wild Cycle for Leukaemia and Youth Sport.
The chance to earn a "quick buck” is a tactic used by fraudsters to recruit money mules, who are promised a share of the proceeds in exchange for their bank account details. A "Money Mule" is a person who transfers money illegally on behalf of other people," a Garda statement said. "They allow their account to be used for the transfer of ill-gotten gains. They may or may not be aware of the crime. However, they are complicit if they recklessly allow their account to be used to launder the proceeds of these crimes. Young people are often targeted by organised crime gangs to act as money mules, laundering thousands
of Euro through their accounts in exchange for a few hundred Euro.” The Gardai are advising people to say no and report the matter to them if approached to facilitate this crime. "If you agree to allow your account be used in this way you are committing the offence of money laundering, a serious offence which on conviction carries a penalty of up to 14 years imprisonment. This will have a serious impact on your future travel plans, career opportunities, vetting and credit ratings." For more crime prevention details on this, and other topics, please see www. garda.ie

'Requiem for a giant - óle' By Nicky Barry Like Moses coming down the Mount, Jack Charlton came amongst us, Not a man for ceremony, or any formal fuss. He was no frills personified, in his plain Geordie way, And brought us joy and great success, way back in the day. When silver heads all heard the news, that Big Jack had died, Their hearts choked with memories, and salt tears filled their eyes. Like Moses with the Israelites, he unified a nation, Into a state of self belief, and crazy celebrations. Moses had Ten Commandments, but Jack had just the one, Put ‘em under pressure, and then get the job done.
For eight hundred years or more, we loathed the Sassenach, For they sent us Tans and Cromwell, and then along came Jack. He lifted us by our scruff necks, and imposed his football will, To put the ball behind them, and then go for the kill. He liked to fish and have a pint, and understood the craic, And when we hear Ole Ole, memories come flooding back. He gave us pride and glory, in a gallant team in green, But most of all, he showed the way, and we dared to dream. He was an English hero, when he won them the World Cup, But we took him to our hearts, and made him one of us.
ADVENTURE: Quest Adventure Series has launched its biggest socially distanced event of the summer.

Weekends can be a huge obstacle You did an incredible job all week, eating healthy nutritious meals, meal-prepped and followed your plan. But then Friday night hits and what happens - do you keep up your awesome habits or do you crash into a 2.5 day nutritional apocalypse where you eat out at almost every meal, have way too many adult beverages, eat a lot of dessert, and overall just let your nutrition go down the drain? Let’s face it, once you starting improving your nutritional habits, the weekend becomes a huge obstacle to progress and success.
HERE ARE FIVE TIPS TO HELP YOU SURVIVE THE WEEKEND: TIP 1: PLAN YOUR MEALS
It’s normal to eat out once or twice on the weekends, but often it can turn into every single meal. Sometimes this is because you simply didn’t plan for those meals. When you do your shopping, plan for the weekends too! Unless you have specific plans to be at a restaurant or party, you should be food shopping for nutritious foods for Saturday and Sunday night along with the rest of the week.
TIP 2: SET LIMITS FOR YOURSELF
Limit the number of meals you eat out, and limit the number of “treat” choices you can make at a restaurant or party. It’s important to limit yourself to two treat meals or less on the weekends. If you have to eat out more than once a day, make sure all but one meal is still following your nutrition plan. If I’m going out to breakfast and dinner, I might try to make a smart choice at breakfast.
If you are going out to dinner, try to stay on track by choosing the bottle of wine or the dessert, but maybe not both.
TIP 3: MAKE SMART CHOICES WHEN EATING OUT
You can go beyond setting specific limits by making the entire meal at a restaurant a better choice. Make sure there’s a vegetable in the meal you choose. Try going with a lower fat protein like fish or chicken versus a steak. Avoid an all-carb option like a giant plate of pasta. A salad is usually a great choice, and consider skipping the dressing or cheese.
TIP 4: START SMALL
When you’re eating at someone’s house (or your own), start with a small portion. Take half of what you think you want. Once you’re done eating it, wait five minutes. Think really hard about whether you want more. Sometimes this small trick will help you not to eat way more than you need. If you’re at a restaurant, you can do the same thing by splitting your meal in half from the very beginning. Take the leftovers home.
TIP 5: ASK FOR HELP FROM YOUR FAMILY AND FRIENDS
Chances are some of your weekend binge-eating is accomplished with family and friends. You might feel like they don’t want to eat healthy with you and won’t be on board. But it doesn’t hurt to ask! Offer to bring a healthy side to a family function, and eat more of that than the other choices. Make your get together focused on healthy eating. If you explain your goals and why they’re so important to you, your family and friends will be there to support you.
WHEELS IN MOTION: The 20th annual Tour de Munster charity cycle will once again take to the roads of Munster from August 6 to 10 to raise vital funds for the Munster branches of Down Syndrome Ireland and individual beneficiaries. 20th annual Tour de Munster taking to the road this August The Tour de Munster charity cycle, this year celebrating its 20th anniversary, will set out on its most important tour yet in order to raise vital funds for the Munster branches of Down Syndrome Ireland and individual beneficiaries. Taking place from August 6 to 10, the tour will see participants travel 600km through the beautiful towns and villages of Munster as they support Down Syndrome Ireland’s Munster branches and individual beneficiaries who urgently require funds. This is an important year for the charity because as a result of the COVID-19 pandemic the Munster branches of Down Syndrome Ireland (DSI) have seen the majority of their vital funding events cancelled over the past number of months. On top of this, branches are now facing significantly increased costs as they prepare to reopen their centres to enable regular one-to-one services such as Occupational and Speech and Language Therapies to take place. Since 2001, the Tour de Munster charity cycle has raised over €3.1 million for a wide range of children’s charities includ-
ing €2.6 million for the Munster branches of Down Syndrome Ireland since they became the main beneficiary of the tour in 2010. “I started Tour de Munster back in 2001 as I wanted to do something to support children's charities while doing something that I love - cycling," founder of the tour, Paul Sheridan said. "It's an important milestone this year and given the times we are living in - fundraising for children in need is more important than it has been since the first charity cycle back in 2001.” This year’s tour will start in Cork City and once again showing his support will be cycling legend Seán Kelly, participating in the tour for the 14th time. The goal of DSI is to enable children born with Down syndrome to be as independent as possible, and through the great work of the Tour de Munster cyclists and supporters, DSI can access the funding needed to help more young people with Down Syndrome develop and flourish in practical ways. The directors of the Aqua Dome considered the recommended regulations to keep staff and customers safe during the COVID-19 pandemic and decided that it is not advisable to reopen the attraction at this time. “We very much regret that we are forced to make this decision as we are very much aware of the negative impact of this on our valued staff and customers," Chairman of the Aqua Dome, Denis Reen, said. "Opening the facility with reduced numbers and the necessary social distancing would result in heavy losses. In addition
with the prevailing litigation culture, even one case in such circumstances would be enough to close the Aqua Dome permanently. We make an urgent plea to this new Government to do something about the Book of Quantum which is dictating the level of awards which are five times higher than the European average and leading to the out of control litigation culture we have in this country.” The Directors said that they did not take this decision lightly while recognising that the Aqua Dome is a very important part of the tourism infrastructure of Tralee and the entire county of Kerry. Up to 40 people are employed at the Aqua Dome during the peak summer season while there were 126,000 visits by customers to the attraction in 2019.
There is one category of plants about which I am often asked and I often forget – climbers. There is a marvellous range of climbers available for many different situations, and they are a little bit underused, I think! There are three main types of climbers, and each can be used in different ways. Firstly, there are those which are self-supporting, that is, they grow small adventurous roots, or sucker pads, which attach themselves to anything which will support them. The obvious example is ivy, but there are others such as Boston ivy and climbing hydrangea. Secondly, there are climbers which need help supporting themselves, even though they might grow tendrils, such as clematis and sweet peas. Thirdly there are shrubs which have lax stems and can be used as climbers, but need support. Examples are climbing roses and chaenomeles. The easiest way to create support for climbers is by running galvanised wire between two vine eyes, or screw in eyes. This might not be the most attractive option, but it is very effective. There is a vast array of trellis available, both decorative and practical, which plants can be trained against also. The most common use for climbers is to hide large or unsightly wall areas and very often these are in a shaded area. An ideal plant is the climbing hydrangea or H. Petiolaris. It will grow on a northern wall, it clings by itself, is a rapid grocer and has white flowers throughout the summer. In our climate it even manages to stay semi evergreen. If it grows too far out from the wall, it is a simple job to
trim it with a shears. Ivy is also a versatile plant, it is evergreen and will grow under almost any conditions. Oil tanks and ditches are also items which often need hiding. One option for the oil tank is to put trellis up around it and grow climbing roses or other plants against that. However, sometimes it is more convenient to let the tank, or the ditch be the support. In this case I strongly recommend a plant such as Solanum ‘glasnevin', or the potato plant, which has long lax stems and blue flowers. Chaenomeles or the Japanese quince, have similar growth habits, having white, pink or red flowers very early in the spring. Rambling roses are an excellent choice needing very little attention apart from a harsh pruning every now and again! On a sunny wall, clematis are good growers. There are many varieties, and one can have a flowering clematis in the garden almost 10 months of the year. They are prone to slug damage in the spring - so be on the lookout, and earwigs can eat the flowers. Clematis roots like to be cool – therefore they are not all that suitable for a pot. They prefer to be in the ground, and if they are in the sun all day, place a few roof tiles or something similar around the base of the plant. They have very deep roots, and will generally find their way to nourishment.

Limited access to Sunday’s cars and coffee event Access to Sunday’s Killarney Cars and Coffee will be strictly limited to the first one hundred cars to comply with social distancing measures and each car will only be allowed a driver and one passenger. The popular static car show returns this Sunday after an extended winter lay off. Organisers are keen to run the event but are concerned about attracting big crowds. They have introduced a range of new requirements to allow people enjoy the event while at the same time making the showcase as safe as possible for spectators and exhibitors. “We are delighted to welcome you all back to Killarney Cars and Coffee,” an event organiser told the Killarney Advertiser. “We all have a part to play in keeping us all safe during these extraordinary times while enjoying the morning in the company of cool cars, good coffee and great conversation, albeit adhering to social distancing guidelines." Founded by Killarney Advertiser proprietor Cormac Casey, the meetings will take place on the third Sunday of every month
from mid-February until further notice. Last year, the maiden event ran in August and continued until November and organisers hoped to repeat this calendar format for 2020 until pandemic-related restrictions intervened. Sunday’s event is the first of the season but organisers are keen to express access will be limited to comply with social distancing and crowd gathering rules. It will take place at KC Print in Lissivigeen, from 10am. “To help us with this we will give all attendees an arrival time to be displayed on their windscreen. If numbers exceed two hundred people hopefully early arrivals will assist us in making space giving all the opportunity in attending for a time,” added the event organiser. “We would ask all attendees to observe social distancing and refrain from touching any vehicles. To allow all attendees enjoy the meet, please observe numbers and manage your time. Our usual coffee providers will be onsite, WC facilities will be limited. Usual rules apply, arrive quietly and leave the same way.”

Fassbender's Road to Le Mans Local Hollywood A-lister Michael Fassbender’s dream of taking part in the biggest endurance motor race in the world will take a step closer to reality this weekend. The Fossa man has held long-term ambitions to contest the legendary 24 Hours Le Mans Race in France. Last year, as part of his preparation, he competed in national-level Porsche Sports Club events in Germany at the wheel of Porsche 911 GT3 Cup as well as driving a Ford Escort Mk2 in the cartell.ie Rally of the Lakes. He also contested rounds of the Ferrari Challenge North America in 2017 and 2018. His German Porsche Cup races featured on his popular online documentary ‘Road to Le Mans’. The final rung on the ladder is the European Le Mans Series, a five round endurance racing championship that gets underway at the Paul Ricard Circuit in France this weekend. Fassbender has signed for the Proton Competition team and will drive a Porsche 911 RSR in the GTE class in the series and a successful season will pave the way for his debut at Le Mans next June.
The 43-year-old will share the car with Porsche factory drivers Richard Lietz and Felipe Fernandez Laser. “Even before I started acting, I had a big dream to go racing - it was clear to me at a young age,” he said. “My father was a driving enthusiast who taught me a lot.” Porsche will work closely with the local Hollywood star and his progress in the European championship will feature in further episodes of ‘Road to Le Mans’. “It’s always wonderful to be able to tackle new projects. This is a very special one,” says Proton Competition team owner Christian Ried who has worked with another notable Hollywood celebrity and Porsche racing enthusiast Patrick Dempsey at Le Mans. “It’ll be interesting to see how Michael progresses. As a team, we’re delighted to be able to accompany him on his ‘Road to Le Mans’.” Following Sunday’s four-hour race, Fassbender will also tackle events in Belgium, Spain and Italy, ahead of the season finale in Portugal on November 1. Fans can follow the race or Saturday’s qualifying session via: live.europeanlemansseries.com.

Take time to identify your ideal job and start networking!
Searching for a job can be confusing and time-consuming and for many jobseekers it can be hard to know where to start particularly when searching online. At a time of high unemployment it is understandable that anyone looking for work will jump at the first role they see that suits them or the first offer they get that will pay the bills. If you are not in acute and immediate financial difficulty it is worth taking some time to really think about the type of job that you want at this stage of your career; the pay, hours and working conditions that you will be happy with and indeed the type of company or organisation you want to work for. Once you have done this it is time to start networking. Start your search by looking at yourself first. Think about the experience and qualifications you have as well as all the skills and competencies you have built up so far in your career. Remember that experience and skills developed outside of the workplace are also a very important part of the portfolio that you bring to any new employer. Think about what, or indeed who, motivates you in the workplace and think about what is missing in your current role. Check out the Jobseekers section of www.careerspor-
tal.ie for some self-assessment tools and lots of up-to-date information. Start exploring the types of roles that you would like and the type of companies you would like to work for. Get an idea of what is involved in such roles and typical conditions and salaries. That way you will be better informed before you start applying and therefore able to narrow down the roles you are applying for. Sites such as www.indeed.com, www.monster.ie, www.irishjobs.ie, and www.publicjobs.ie will give you an idea of who is hiring and the roles that are being advertised. You can delve deeper to explore the details to see if the organisation and the role is what you are looking for. Always keep an eye on local and national print media as well as listening to local radio stations for weekly job adverts. When you start your job search online use keywords that help to narrow down
the roles that you are interested in. For example, if you have worked in computers you might want to include the computer languages you have worked with, or in payroll it may be the financial packages you have used. Break down and simplify any of the jargon that you find difficult to understand on job search websites, Google anything that you don’t understand so that you have a clear idea of what is being looked for before you consider applying. Don’t be put off by the jargon; think about ways that your skills might actually match the job specification. If you are in the market for a job then you need to let people know. Networking is one of the most effective way for jobseekers to find roles. Use the contacts you have in your family, circle of friends, former colleagues, those who you meet through hobbies and pastimes as well as those who you socialise with. Make a list of all the people you know who may be helpful in building your network as you work towards getting your ideal job. Reach out to them and be specific about the type of role you want. Having a profile on LinkedIn gives you access to a global network which will greatly enhance the people you can reach out to and also facilitates employ-

The rock stood tall and strong Along the shore of life Weathering hardships sent by the world The trouble and the strife It protected the smaller structures That nestled by it’s side Despite storms of physical depletion Brought in by the tide Waves of worry chipped away the surface But the inner strength shone through A monument of pride and independence That rock dear Helen was you Your love is irreplaceable Your sense of humour was unique You make us laugh, still to this day With the remarks you used to speak The winds of change blew fiercely And took you far away But now you live in paradise Where we’ll meet again one day. Sadly missed Helen. Maureen and Eileen Ann McSharry.

In loving memory of Mary Brosnan (nee Doona) late of Rockfield, Faha, Killarney who sadly passed away 17th July 2015. In tears we saw you suffering, and watched you pass away; Our hearts were almost broken, we wanted you to stay. But when we saw you sleeping, so peaceful, free from pain, How could we wish you back with us, to suffer that again? It broke our hearts to lose you, but you did not go alone, For part of us went with you, the day God took you home. Forever loved and truly missed by your husband Ger and sons TJ & Junior xxx

CLARKE
In loving memory of a dear Husband, Father and Grand-father Desmond Clarke Coolgrean Park, Killarney, Co. Kerry who died on 16th July 2015 When God was making husbands as far as I can see, He made a special soulmate especially for me. He made a perfect gentleman compassionate and kind, With more love and affection than you could ever wish to find. He gave my Darling Husband a heart of solid gold, He gave me wonderful memories only my heart can hold. He was someone I could talk to that no one can replace, He was someone I could laugh with, Till tears ran down my face. Next time we meet will be at heaven’s door when I see you standing there, I won’t cry anymore. I will put my arms around you and kiss your smiling face, Then the pieces of my broken heart will fall back into place.
I sat beside your bedside, My heart was crushed and sore, I did my duty to the end, Till I could do no more. In tears I watched you sinking, I watched you fade away, And though my heart was breaking, I knew you could not stay, You left behind an aching heart, That loved you most sincere, I never shall and never will, Forget you father dear. Sadly missed by your loving daughter Noreen. Anniversay Mass Sunday 19th July at 10 a.m. Church of Christ Prince of Peace, Fossa, Killarney

Jesus came to the foot of the bed, These are the words we are sure he said, You suffered enough, take my hand, And come with me to a better land. So keep your arms around him Lord, And give him special care, Make up for what he suffered, And all that seemed unfair. Please forgive a falling tear, A constant wish that you were here, Others have lost like this we know, But he was our loved one, And we loved him so. Fondly remembered by your loving daughter Anne and son-in-law Donald. A bouquet of beautiful memories, Sprayed with a million tears, Wishing God could have spared you, If just for a few more years. Fondly remembered by your loving grand-daughter Zarah.

IN MEMORIAM
Fondest memories every day of our dear father Con Guerin, late of “Irish Cottage”, Muckross Road, Killarney, who sadly left us on the 26th July, 1989. Also remembering his wife Kathy who sadly left us on the 21st of October 2005 and their beloved son, our beloved brother Cornelius (Con) who sadly departed from us on 22nd of September 2014. “Believe me if all those Endearing young charms, Which I gaze on so fondly today Were to change by tomorrow And fleet in my arms, Like fairy gifts fading away, Thou would still be adored, As this moment thou art, Let thy loveliness fade as it will And around the dear ruin, Each wish of my heart, Would entwine itself verdantly still, It is not while beauty And youth are their own And thy cheeks unprofaned by a tear, That the fervour and faith Of a soul can be known, To which time will but make Thee more dear, Oh the heart that has truly loved, Never forgets, But as truly loves on to the close, As the sun flower turns On her God when he sets, The same look, which she turned, When he rose” Written by Thomas Moore 1808. Always thinking of you, your children Mary, Patrick, Margaret, Timothy, Catherine/Con, Denis, and all their families.
MIRACLE PRAYER Dear Heart of Jesus, in the past I have asked You for many favours. This time I ask you this very special one (mention favour). Take it, dear Heart of Jesus and place it within Your own Heart where Your Father sees it. Then, in His merciful eyes it will become Your favour not mine. Amen. Say for three days, promise publication and favour will be granted. CC

Loved and remembered every day Your heartbroken parents Billy and Joanie XXX Brother You can shed tears that he is gone, Or you can smile because he lived, You can close your eyes and pray that he will come back, Or you can open your eyes and see all that he has left. Your heart can be empty because you can’t see him, Or you can be full of the love that you shared, You can turn your back on tomorrow and live yesterday, Or you can be happy for tomorrow because of yesterday. You can remember him and only that he is gone, Or you can cherish his memory and let it live on, You can cry and close your mind be empty and turn your back, Or you can do what he would want: smile, open your eyes, love and go on. Love and miss you every day Cian Keith, Linda, Klara, Darren and Arlo XXX

We were all part of Jackie’s Army
Killarney pays tribute to a sporting icon | By Sean Moriarty Many of us are better at watching soccer than we are at playing it, and for that we have to thank Jack Charlton, who died this week aged 85. His arrival as the manager of the Republic of Ireland Football Manager in 1985 made us watch even more soccer. He guided the Irish team to their first major final at Euro '88 and two World Cups, Italia ’90 and USA ‘94 in the space of 10 years. He brought Irish soccer fans on a journey that will never be forgotten, and those of a certain age began to believe that qual-

ifying for major tournaments were the norm rather than the exception. Moments that define Irish sporting history; our first ever appearance at the European finals in Germany in 1988; Ray Houghton’s famous Stuttgart goal against arch rivals England; our first World Cup, Italia ’90 where the impossible was achieved; making it to the quarter finals against the host nation and the revenge defeat of the Italians in Giant’s Stadium, New York, four years later. These are just the sporting highlights. There were great cultural moments too and he gave the Irish people a new sense of believe in an ever expanding Euro-zone. We could now celebrate our national identity in ways never seen before and as one hack put it, we reclaimed the Irish Tri-Colour from extreme nationalists. The irony that it took an Englishman to achieve all this is not lost, as "Big Jack", became a national folk hero and a much loved character. At the height of his Irish success he made visits to Killarney, and in November 1990 Jack Charlton was given a civic reception by the then Mayor of Killarney Michael Courtney (RIP) at the Great Southern Hotel. Michael Rosney, now of Killeen House Hotel, was the GSH manager at the time. “He was an absolute gentleman to deal with,” Michael told the Killarney Advertiser. “In fact, he stood out as he was such a kind, genuine, natural man to deal with.”

Jack was in town to address the Irish Travel Agents Association annual conference. Local travel agent Vince Counihan, who owned Counihan’s Travel Agency at the time, was instrumental in getting Big Jack to Killarney. “He was such a great speaker, a lovely modest man to deal with,” added Michael. Over seven hundred people attended the conference banquet where Jack gave an uplifting and humorous speech. Jack retired early as he had to be up at 6am so he could travel to Dublin for another appointment. Needless to say, the banquet attendees did not go to bed early and the craic continued into the small hours in the residents’ bar. The early morning revellers could not believe that Jack was still in the hotel the following morning and started an impromptu version of ‘Ole Ole Ole’ as he waited in the lobby for his lift. Michael Rosney was there to witness it all. “He just turned to me and said "It is so nice of the Irish to get up early and see me off",” Michael told the Killarney Advertiser. One of the guests at the reception included recently retired Killarney Senator Paul Coghlan from Ballydowney. “He created the atmosphere, there was
an aura about him,” the former politician told the Killarney Advertiser. “We were all enthralled and thrilled to met him. He was great company but he also did great things for the nation and caused us to sit and take notice. He was a national hero.” The FAI’s main sponsor at the time was Opel Ireland and local dealer and motor industry legend, the late, Mick Ahern, met Charlton at new car launches in Dublin. His son Paul recalls how his late father and Jack became great friends and Mick would often act as the soccer hero’s driver while he was in the Killarney area. Paul remembers one story where his father was dispatched to an airport to pick Jack up. He was driving a brand new Opel Omega at the time and Charlton loved nothing better than to smoke a big cigar after a flight. “"Is this a new car Mick", he asked my father,” Paul told the Killarney Advertiser. “"It is Jack", and with that Jack put the cigar back in his shirt pocket and said “I won’t be the first person to smoke in it so".” On at least one occasion Jack Charlton stayed at The Three Lakes Hotel, the current location of the Plaza Hotel, and once again Mick Ahern was the appointed driver. “A huge crowd gathered outside the hotel to try and meet Jack,” added Paul. “He was bigger than the Pope at the time.”

Sporting challenges in the new normal | By Sean Moriarty The world of sport is returning to some degree of normality. The Killarney Advertiser’s Sean Moriarty looks at a selection popular sports and clubs in the Killarney area to get an idea of the challenges they face ahead of their return to some degree of normal.
CYCLING
Killarney Cycling Club’s Conor Kissane will contest his first road race since March when he lines up for the Michael Sheils Memorial Race in Knockaderry, County Limerick on Sunday. The last event to run before the national shutdown was The Lacey Cup in Tralee, on March 8, where the Barleymount rider finished third overall. The Michael Shiels event was due to take place the following weekend but it coincided with the first phase of the lockdown and was postponed until Sunday. “Normally we would be racing every weekend from March 1,” he told the Killarney Advertiser. “Training has been good but it was hard to stay motivated with no events. Some weeks when the weather was good I put in huge efforts, other weeks it was hit and miss." Entries for Sunday’s event have been limited to 70 in each class, as opposed to one hundred plus in normal circumstances and were granted to riders on a first come – first served basis. This could affect race tactics as Kissane will not know how many fellow Killarney Cycling Club members are on the entry list or if they face stronger or weaker challenges from other clubs. “The start of any road race can be chaotic but once the race settles down you are looking for people to help you or to help other riders,” he added. “If there is
a break away and you have limited teammates in the bunch it could be very hard to reel them back in.” New rules include riders arriving at a venue 30 minutes before a race. “Any riders arriving earlier than this will be asked to leave,” a Newcastle West Wheelers Cycling Club official said. Spectators have been asked to stay away – a difficult task to police as events take place on public roads – and squads are limited to competing team members and a manager with additional staff and supporters not allowed attend. Riders are asked to leave the venue within 15 minutes of the finish of their race. Awards ceremonies have been eliminated from the schedule and prize money will be transferred into the winners’ bank accounts a few days afterwards.
local level, it must operate within County Board directives. That includes the appointment of a dedicated COVID-19 compliance officer. There are hopes that some form of a County Championship can take place in late summer. “There is still a nervousness around playing in a contact sport when public health guidelines are saying to remain socially distant,” said club PRO David Gillespie who, along with fellow officers, is coping with extra administration work to keep the show on road. “As each week goes on more people are coming back to play, it is good to have a safe outlet to return to normal activity. We remain vigilant to keep our players and families safe during these times.”
CAMOGIE
Kerry boxer, Kevin Cronin, will have to wait until at least November before he can get back in the ring. Boxing, like many sports, relies on spectators to make it pay and many Irish boxing promotion companies have ruled out running bouts behind closed doors. The Tralee-based Milltown boxer, who fights in the Light Heavyweight division, is considered the county’s best boxing prospect and he has ambitions of fighting professionally. Cronin is scheduled to appear at The Devenish Complex in Belfast on November 15. Until then he can only prepare and train as if his next fight is only a few days away. “I am ready,” he told the Killarney Advertiser. “I would fight anywhere in the world right now if I could go.” He both accepts and understands why boxing promoters do not want to run events without spectators. “Fighting in an empty stadium would be just like a training-sparring session. It
Killarney Camogie Club resumed training this week after the long lay-off but will have wait until at least August before any sort of competitive action will take place. The local Camogie club must follow GAA rules as dictated by Croke Park and, on a

would affect you as you would give 30 percent less while sparring,” he added. Boxing clubs, under the current Government road map, can reopen on August 1 for training and club related activities.
HURLING
Hurling activity resumes in the county this weekend with competitions at U12, U14 and Senior levels. The Rhyno Quality Feeds North Kerry Senior Hurling Championship (John Joe O’Sullivan Cup) will get underway on this evening (Friday) when Causeway are at home to Lixnaw at 7.30pm. On Sunday, at 12 noon, Ballyduff will be at home to St Brendan's. On Monday evening, (July 20) at 7pm Kilmoyley host Ballyheigue while Crotta O’Neill’s play Abbeydorney at Dromakeen. “The North Kerry Hurling Board has put in place a revised format for this competition for 2020 in order to provide competitive games for senior teams in advance of the County Senior Championship, moving from a knockout to a league style competition,” said a County Board statement. With two groups of four teams, each team will get three games with the top team in each group qualifying for the final. The groups are: Group 1: Lixnaw, Ballyduff, St Brendan’s, Causeway. Group 2: Abbeydorney, Ballyheigue, Kilmoyley, Crotta O’Neill’s. Further rounds will take place on August 3 and 24.

In conversation with Mícheál Ó Muircheartaigh Mícheál Ó Muircheartaigh will be 90-years-old next month and he continues to be hale and hearty doing his daily exercises during COVID-19. Eamonn Fitzgerald interviewed him for On the Ball on August 1, 2014. This week we are reproducing Part One of that interview.
| By Eamonn Fitzgerald On the Ball (OTB): We go back a long ways, Mícheál. Mícheál Ó Muircheartaigh (MOM): That would be 1971 at the All-Ireland football seven-a side in UCD. It was a great competition for the reigning county champions and both Johnny (Culloty) and Weeshie (Fogarty) were unable to travel from Kerry. With no regular goalkeeper by East Kerry Donie (O'Sullivan) asked you to go into goal. It worked out very well and ye won all your games that day qualifying for Sunday’s semi-finals. It took off from there. OTB: When are you going to retire? MOM: I retired in 2010 and felt very privileged to have the health to broadcast in eight decades starting in 1949. I love going to matches anywhere in the country and to meet people. I suppose that is the real attraction for me - people. I love meeting the plain people of Ireland and players of course, past and present. It does not matter to me if they won or lost their All-Ireland, or county title. They played the games, wore the geansai, that is 'mórtas cine'. Then, of course you have all the officials and supporters. What passion compares to the mammy on the line, no not on the sideline but 25 yards in to the pitch cheering on her darling on Saturday mornings. I was always very interested in the history of the GAA. When all is said and done it is a history of people. I found that the fixtures for the first All-Ireland football final were made and no venues decided on. There weren't any pitches as we have today, so they were dependent on the good will of a local landowner. The first ever match in round one of the 1887 All-Ireland championship was played in a field beside the present Elm Park Golf Club and St Vincent's Hospital in Dublin. You would have that field available in rural areas down in Kerry. Where did Spa, Kilcummin and Glenflesk play before they developed their current magnificent grounds?
SPORT
17.7.2020 OTB: Bishop Moynihan, a former Bishop of Kerry told me in his latter years that the social value of Kerry winning All-Irelands on a regular basis was immeasurable, “it shortened the winter", he said. Con Houlihan wrote that the drawback about being a Kerryman living in Dublin is that you are in situ for the game, but you never got the opportunity to come up for the match. You went to the game, just 70 minutes, whereas the folks at home came up for the match. You missed the ritual of scrounging for a ticket, berating people who got tickets, who never did one bit to help out down in the local field. No sign of them on bleak November days. As the week wore on the intensity grew for the ticketless. Go to Dublin anyway and take your chances outside the Gresham on Sunday morning. The train journey home flew, as the game was dissected by so many groups in huddles; the definitive analysis came in Jimmy O'Brien’s [bar on College St]. Those who know their football would be there and far more knowledgeable than The Sunday Game pundits. O'Rourke is solid enough, Spillane was a great player but he can make outlandish assumptions, as for Brolly, he can be off the wall. MOM: Con Houlihan had a lot to say about that and much more. OTB: Back to your life since 2010. MOM: Oh ,yes. So many people all over the country have been very kind to invite me to launches, walks and special occasions. OTB: Such as climbing Carrantoohil. How in the name of God did an octogenarian climb 3,414 feet? MOM: I had a good guide and I took it aisy [easy], de réir a chéile, coiscéim in’dhiaidh coiscēime. When I heard what Alan Kerins [Galway] was trying to achieve for such a deserving charity, having All-Ireland football medals from the 32 counties taken to the top of the highest mountain, I joined in. Of course any kind of an All-Ireland football med-
al sufficed. Mind you they had to dig deep. We were stuck to find a football medal in Kilkenny until Ogie [Moran] got the brainwave that there was a fellow from Kilkenny on the Gormanston team that Ogie captained to Hogan Cup victory. OTB: Sigerson Clifford said,"I am Kerry, like my mother before me". What does Kerry mean to you? MOM: Everything, its landscape, its heritage and its people. One's native place is special. I believe that wherever you come from you should be proud of it. You should never forget where you came from. In my case it's Kerry appropriately called The Kingdom, Heaven on Earth. There is no place like it: it defines me. OTB: Both of us were in Tralee for the final match in the league and Cork ran through Kerry. Hurley in particular was magnificent that day kicking points from all angles without even looking at the posts. Can you explain to me how Kerry were able to come from a 10 point drubbing to a 12 point win in the 2014 Munster final? That 22 point swing makes no sense. MOM: Fair point. People will wonder how good Kerry are and are Cork as bad as they were in the Munster final? The latter first. Cork are much better than they showed that day, but Fitzmaurice came a ‘aniar aduaidh’ on Cuthbert and they were shell shocked. Cork are not a bad team and they will bounce back. I have been watching Kerry since 1949 and the two best team displays I have seen by any Kerry senior team was last year's semi-final against Dublin up to the final few minutes, when Dublin rattled off a big score. That and this year’s Munster final. I emphasise team display and Dr Eamonn was a great believer on the team performance. Even the best of players will have an off day, but if the team is playing well it does not matter and the good player will come right back to form again. Dr Eamonn knew long before other managers did of the importance of mental fitness. You know sometimes if the weather

I believe that wherever you come from you should be proud of it. was very bad they would not go out on the field to train, but they would talk and talk. Eamonn was an imposing boss and you did not talk back to him. One night, Mick O’ Connell - who else but him - said, "but doctor it might be raining the day of the match". There was no response. OTB: Do you rate this Kerry team. MOM: Yes. Look what they did in Cork. Every player played well and I mean every player. Some were magnificent, but all passed the test. They followed the instructions of Fitzmaurice to a man and that rarely happens. He had the team set up in a special way for the Cork game. Look at midfield. They had strung three Kerry players across the middle so wherever the ball was kicked they had a man right there. Johnny Buckley grabbed his chance on the big day in Cork, working very hard and landing four mighty points. Some players may not appear to have prospered, but did you notice how they marked space in their territories so that when Cork did try to set up an attack, there was a Kerryman covering every angle. Paul Geaney did so well, not surprisingly, since he captained UCC to victory in the Sigerson Cup earlier this year under Billy Morgan and to a large extent he won it on his own. Look how Shane Enright cut off the threat of Mark Hurley. Kerry will win the quarter final in Croke Park against any opposition and if Fitzmaurice gets the team performance right they will make it to the final. OTB: What surprised me most was the
I love going to matches anywhere in the country and to meet people. I suppose that is the real attraction for me - people..
performance of Declan O’Sullivan. How would a player in his 30s, who played very little football since last year’s game against Dublin have the legs and fitness to play out around the middle and even defensively as well? He should not have the legs for that role. MOM: Because his head was in the right place. OTB: Tell me more. MOM: We all know over the years that Declan was a superb ball carrier - too much so at times, but in the Cork game he was given the job of play maker in the absence of Gooch. He shored up midfield and was well able to carry and shield the ball before setting up attacks with well-timed and well placed balls that the forwards could run on to, the perfect ball for eager forwards. But most of all Declan's head was in the right place since he had secured permanent employment. OTB: Hasn't Fitzmaurice blown his cover now and all the remaining teams can do video analysis to counteract what worked for Kerry v Cork? MOM: It won't worry him; he will come up with new strategies and new match ups depending on the opposition. OTB: Are Dublin dead certs to retain Sam 2014? MOM: Put it this way. They have a massive pick. The team is very good, but the bench is massive. You see the position with those fellows Eamonn is that they are raging mad with Jim Gavin. They are mad with him knowing in their own minds that they are better than some of the fellows on the team. When they come on they have a point to prove and are hell bent on one thing showing the boss that he has made a mistake once more by not starting them. That is why they play with such a swagger, I would say arrogance. Recently, the Dublin subs scored 1-7. That is overwhelming for other teams who do not have such options on the bench. Part Two of this interview will be published next week.

R evised Motorsport Ireland calendar
Motorsport Ireland has released a revised calendar of events that could run, subject to COVID-19 restrictions, between now and the end of the year. Killarney and District Motor Club (KDMC) has been granted two dates in the revised calendar. The local club was successful in its bid to move the date of the Rentokil-Initial Killarney Historic Rally to November 28 as opposed to its previous December 5 date.
KDMC has also secured a date for an Autocross event on December 29. This traditional Christmas event last ran in 2018 after track flooding caused the last-minute cancellation of last year’s event at Tralee Racecourse. Inclusion in the calendar is no certainty that events will run and just two other rallies have been allocated dates for the remainder of the year. The Wexford Rally has been allocated its intended date of September 5 and 6, while Carrick-on-Suir Motor Club has secured a date for a rally on October 11. The popular Kerry Winter Rally, which
