An artist's impression of what the new road layout and adjacent community area will look like.

Further changes to Lewis Road intersection plan | By Sean Moriarty Killarney councillors met behind closed doors on Wednesday this week to discuss changes to the Bypass Road/Lewis Road/Kilcummin Road realignment plans. The junction has been the scene of several fatal accidents in recent years and its realignment is seen as a major priority in Killarney by both residents and politicians alike. Earlier this year Kerry County Council and Transport Infrastructure Ireland (TII) revealed draft plans for the junc-

tion. New plans, seen by the Killarney Advertiser, show a new pedestrian underbridge linking Bridgefield housing estate to a new recreation area which will be constructed in the cut-off lands between the existing and new Kilcummin roads. The plans revealed in February show that the N22 Lewis Road and Kilcummin Road Upgrade Project would involve the upgrade of approximately 0.8km of the N22 National Primary Route which forms part of the Killarney Bypass. Specifically, the project focuses on the upgrade of a staggered junction which

connects the L3902 Lewis Road and the L2033 Kilcummin Road to the N22. On Wednesday, TII presented additional plans to the Council in the Town Hall. The new proposal does not change the proposed new road layout, which will include a new roundabout, a new section added to the Kilcummin Road to move it away from the Lewis Road intersection, the banning of right turns from the Bypass to Lewis Road. Motorists will continue to the new roundabout and double-back and right turns exiting Lewis Rd will be banned - instead they will proceed to the Cleeney Roundabout and double-back.

The original plan was to include a pedestrian underpass which was to be situated opposite two houses in Bridgefield - but following concerns raised by residents - this will now move 800m west and away from the houses. However, this has raised further concerns with councillors and residents. “No one will have any objections to the road works and the new roundabout, this is badly wanted,” said Councillor Brendan Cronin. “But there is little thought for the residents of Bridgefield. They have raised concerns about anti-social behaviour and moving the underpass won’t change this. The new park and walkway seems to be a way of dressing up this issue, but there is no account for parking and additional traffic in the estate.” Local residents, already beleaguered by congestion on big occasions at Fitzgerald Stadium, say their main concern is to make the junction safer and the additional works are unnecessary. The new park will be built in the area between the Bypass road and the new road in a triangular area that could otherwise be a wasteland. “All that is really needed is a new junction layout and the roundabout,” Lewis Road resident, Laura O’Regan, said. “The existing road could be upgraded instead of building the new section. Where are people going to park? It will lead to further problems down by the pitch and putt club. If the existing road was upgraded there would be no need for the park, and where is this money coming from?” The final draft won’t be released until next month because of this month’s local elections and the formation of a new Municipal Council.

30 new high tech parking machines a first for Kerry | By Sean Moriarty Killarney is the first town in Kerry to install 30 new high tech parking meters – which will transform how people pay for their parking. 30 of the most modern machines were installed around the town on Monday morning to allow customers pay with their bank cards, while the next phase will allow for payment via text message or online. The machines also record detailed data of transactions which can help towards the town’s parking strategy into the future.

The new machines, which came into operation this week, are fully compatible with online and text message payment technology but that part of the modernisation process will have to be put out to tender to select a suitable company to manage the payments. “I was delighted when I was in town the other morning to see the installation of 30 modern parking machines taking place,” Councillor Brendan Cronin, who along with other councillors campaigned for the modern facilities, told the Killarney Advertiser. “I understand these machines will provide significant data to the staff in the Municipal District which will help in

the development of the towns parking strategy. The previous machines have served the town of Killarney well, but it is now time for us to move with the times to a more modern machine. These machines, along with the devel-

opment of Rock Road car park, see a significant investment in parking in Killarney town and I am now calling for the Municipal District to drive on further and to develop a tender for online and mobile phone payment options.”

17.05.2019 t UNVEILING: The Cairn of Peace Monument symbolises the spirit of this competition, in keeping with tradition, a piece of stone from all the countries that participated in the world forms part of the cairn. Photo: Valerie O’Sullivan

‘Cairn of Peace’ finally in place after 65 year wait The final piece of the jigsaw that links Killarney with the 1954 World Ploughing Championships is complete thanks to the efforts of local ploughing enthusiasts who unveiled a ‘Cairn of Peace’ monument in the town last weekend - to mark the event 65 years ago. | By Sean Moriarty Following two years of hard work the ‘Cairn of Peace’ was unveiled on Mission Road last Saturday. Tradition states that each town that hosts the annual World Ploughing Championships would erect a ‘Cairn of Peace’ – to promote its mission statement ‘Let Peace Cultivate the Land’

– but for various reasons it did not happen in Killarney. Back in 1954, 13 teams from all over the world competed over two days for the World Ploughing Championship. After Canada, Ireland was the second ever host nation. The cairn was designed by Ballyhar man, Bernard O’Sullivan, and each of the 13 countries that took part 65 years ago is

represented by a rock from that country which is built into the monument. Members of the newly formed Killarney Ploughing, along with officials from Kerry Ploughing, the National Ploughing Association and the World Ploughing World Organisation set about correcting this oversight. As the monument was unveiled, flags representing each of the 13 countries

were raised to the backdrop of the Irish National Anthem. Local farmer and agricultural history enthusiast Seanie O'Donoghue donated the vintage plough that sits on top of the monument. Members of local ploughing clubs were joined by Hugh Barr, the 1954 World Champion from Coleraine, County Derry, and representatives from the 1954 Republic of Ireland Ploughing team; William Murphy and Ronald Sheane, to witness the unveiling. Other guests included the National Ploughing Association Managing Director Anna May McHugh and Anna Marie McHugh, the World Ploughing Organisation General Secretary. “After 65 years the World Ploughing Championships’ visit to Killarney is finally marked in stone,” said local organiser Tom Leslie. “The weekend went way better than we had planned. It was an honour to have Hugh Barr, William Murphy and Ronald Sheane here. We brought them up the farms where they ploughed in 1954, and it was a special and emotional occasion for them. It was also special for Anna May and Anna Marie.” Tom thanked Kerry County Council for donating the site on Mission Road, officials from local, national and international ploughing associations for making the event happen, and members of Killarney Valley Classic and Vintage Club for providing volunteers to help the event run smoothly.

Town honour for the late great Paudie O’Connor A very special ceremony was held in Killarney on Monday afternoon to remember one of the town’s great contributors. The late Paudie O’Connor, former Mayor of Killarney and noted sportsman, was fondly remembered during a ceremony at the roundabout linking Lewis Road with St Anne’s Road. Cathaoirleach Cllr John Sheahan, Angela McAllen (Killarney Municipal District Manager) and the elected members of Killarney Municipal District, alongside Paudie’s family members gathered for the special event. Cathaoirleach Cllr. John Sheahan acknowledged it gave him a great honour to be there as he had proposed the dedication of the roundabout to the late Paudie O’Connor.

He advised that it was significant that the roundabout linking Lewis Road with St Anne’s Road was chosen as it is only up the road from the late Paudie O’Connor’s home in O’Sullivans Place. Paudie spent over 10 years as a Fine Gael Councillor in Killarney Urban District Council, serving the people of Killarney from 1974 to 1985. During this time he served as Cathaoirleach on four occasions in 1978, 1980, 1982 and 1984. Paudie also served as a member of Kerry County Council from 1979 to 1985. Cllr Sheahan spoke of the fondness with which Paudie is remembered as one of the greatest players and characters to ever grace the Irish basketball scene. “The sign erected here today is to mark the memory of the late Paudie O’Connor

and his contribution to sport and to the Killarney people,” Cllr Sheahan said. Paudie captained the senior national team, winning over 100 caps, and in 1977 had the distinction of being the first Irish player to make the All-Star Five of an international qualification tournament. Cllr John Sheahan concluded by stating that the sign erected is to mark

the memory of the late Paudie O’Connor and his contribution to sport and Killarney. Paudie’s brother Seamie also spoke saying it was a huge honour for their family. “On behalf of the O’Connor family we are very honoured that this honour has been bestowed on Paudie, and we’re very grateful.”

Sadness at the death of popular local man who dedicated himself to his community. Killarney bid a fond farewell to popular local man Neilie Griffin, who passed away last weekend after a brave battle with illness. Neilie, from Pinewood Estate and formerly of Moulagh, Fossa, Killarney, was a familiar face in Killarney town through his dedicated work with the local Council. Since the sad news of Neilie's death last Friday, there have been many warm tributes to the popular man on social media. The words 'True Gentleman' feature prominently by several people recalling their fond memories of Neilie. At Neilie's Funeral Mass on Monday, Fr Jim Linehan described him as a great family man and recalled his outstanding work with the Council and his wonderful commitment to St Paul's Basketball Club. Neilie's former work colleagues in Killarney Town Council and members of St Paul's Basketball Club provided guards of honour as they escorted the funeral cortege from O'Shea's Funeral Home through Killarney town on Sunday evening, and at The Church Of The Resurrection on Monday. Neilie was also well-known in sporting circles where he gave tremendous service to St Paul's Basketball Club for several years. During the ‘90s and noughties, Neilie was the team manager with the St Paul's Senior Men’s National League teams that played under the Kerry Spring and Gleneagle Lakers ban-

ner. He travelled the length and breadth of the country with the team and was a popular and respected figure among the players and officials. Always reliable and obliging, no job was ever too big or small for Neilie, who was also very instrumental in spearheading various fundraising initiatives for the club. Neilie, and all the Griffin family, have given St Paul's excellent service on and off the court over the years. His wife Mary was a very active member of the club's juvenile committee for many years and one of their proudest moments in basketball was to witness their daughter Diane representing Ireland on the international stage. Their son John was also an outstanding player winning an U19 national cup with St Paul's in 1997 and played in the SuperLeague for several years with Gleneagle Lakers. Their other daughters, Siobhan and Aislinn, also represented St Paul's at various levels. Neilie's interest in basketball never waned and he was delighted to see the return of national league basketball to Killarney two years ago after an absence of nearly a decade. Despite battling an unfortunate illness, he was a regular at Scotts Lakers home games in Killarney Sports Centre and always had a kind word for everyone. Neilie is survived by his wife Mary, son John and daughters Diane, Siobhán and Aislinn, and extended family.

New text service to help fight crime The streets of Killarney are set to be much safer thanks to the launch of a new crime reporting text service. This week, Killarney Chamber of Tourism and Commerce and An Garda Siochana, jointly launched the ‘SEE Something SAY Something’ initiative – where the public can report crime or anti-social behavior anonymously with their phone. Members of the public can simply text KILLARNEY and a brief account of the incident and the location to 50555 which will be received by the sergeant on duty and acted upon immediately. The service was developed by entrepreneur Brian Stephenson and has

been very successful in Tralee. The new service will complement the Purple Flag initiative aimed at maintaining Killarney’s standing as one of the safest and most attractive towns in the country at night. “SEE Something SAY Something has worked very successfully in Tralee and we are delighted to be able to introduce it to Killarney,” Superintendent Flor Murphy, said. “It’s all about public safety and making our town and its surrounds better and safer for residents and visitors. It doesn’t take away the traditional methods of fighting crime, but it will enable us to work more quickly and more smartly if anti-social behaviour or criminality is reported by text message.”

Make-up artists thrilled to receive national awards It’s not every day you win a national award – but two came to Killarney at the same time as local make-up artists scooped top honours. | By Michelle Crean Annette O'Brien and Marilyn McSweeney, freelance make-up artists from Killarney were delighted to have each won a local Brides of Kerry award – but were shocked to learn that they both also received awards at the Irish Make-Up Awards

2019 on Sunday night. Annette, who has worked with Suzanne Jackson of So Sue Me, secured the ‘Celebrity Make-up Artist of the Year’ award beating off some of Ireland’s best at a big celebration of the Irish make-up industry in the Crowne Plaza Dublin Airport Hotel, which was attended by over 400 guests

and the glamorous night was hosted by Andrea Hayes. Just a week earlier she also won ‘Business Woman of the Year’ at the Brides of Kerry Awards. “It’s my first time winning a national award, I’m thrilled,” Annette told the Killarney Advertiser this week. “I was up against five others who are top of their industry.” Annette's creative drive and experience are highly sought after. Hundreds of satisfied brides and a range of high pro-

file celebrity clients are testament to the high regard with which Annette is held within the profession. Celebrities include Lucy Kennedy, Kathryn Thomas, James Nesbitt, DJ Louise Duffy and Miriam O’Callaghan. “Thank you to everyone for your support throughout the years. Winning awards reminds me how much I love my job and it’s an added bonus as I have just gone into my freelance work on a full time basis.” Marilyn was also delighted when she won the ‘Bridal Specialist of the Year 2019’ at the Dublin awards, it was her second award in two weeks as she also won the ‘Wedding Make-up Artist of the Year’ at the Brides of Kerry Awards. “I haven’t won any awards before,” Marilyn said. “I’m thrilled about receiving the awards. I’d like to thank my brides and clients for their support.”

Election posters damaged in Killarney Election rivalry in the Killarney area has taken a nasty turn after several candidate’s election posters were defaced on Wednesday. Fianna Fail Councillor Niall Kelleher had two of his campaign posters defaced after someone used a sharp instrument to rip them up. Labour candidate Marie Moloney and Independent runner Maura Healy-Rae had a similar experience at the same location in Coolcorcoran Cross near the new Killarney Burial Ground. “It does not bother me at this stage,” Cllr Kelleher told the Killarney Advertiser. “I am aware of a number of other candi-

dates who had the same thing happen. It is what it is and I am not making a big deal out of it. Looking at the wider picture I am all in favour of a national ban on posters. We all have to operate on a level playing field and if others are putting out posters, then so must I. But I only have 100 posters out there in a very large constituency.” Marie Moloney added that she was made aware of the same thing happening to her posters. “One of my team had the poster replaced before I saw it myself. It is no big deal.” The Killarney Advertiser was unable to make contact with Healy-Rae.

VIEWS NEWS Sin was a very handy way of organising lives and society ON

THE

x

It is time we were handed a new set of sins, all clearly delineated, in the way we were taught them in the communion and confirmation classes at school. And while we are at it, could we have the new “sin list” dated and stamped? I must not be the only one to notice sins tend to date. “Sin bin” has real meaning – the only thing to recognise is that new ones rush in to replace them. A number of things have set me thinking along the lines of the new earthly damnation sins, not least the sacking of a high profile BBC broadcaster who has lost his job over a Tweet sent after the recent royal birth. The Tweet picture was not nice. It was of a couple holding a well-dressed monkey by the hands. It was the kind of thing that would have been directed at the Irish by the English establishment from the age of Darwin to just a couple of decades ago. We Irish were held to be peculiarly “Simian” and very near the monkey. In other words, we hadn't evolved much. Pictures of the Irish face would be used in the British press and in magazines like ‘Punch’ to illustrate our semi-animal features. Roll on to 2019, and quickly such a thing has become a sacking offence. A new sin in other words. It wasn't just the English. In UCC in the 1970s and ‘80s Kerry people had to grin and bear the Kerry man jokes of maths lecturer Des McHale, the man behind the super brain and other quizzes. I thought about him the other day – he published several books of Kerry man jokes and must have made money at our expense. I found some of his “jokes” highly offensive and demeaning. Did

you hear about the Kerry man whose library burned down…etc etc. A lot of the sins of the modern era are not just about thought and deed, they are about language. At the same time the Kerry man jokes were in vogue, the fashion chain Gay Wear changed its name to A Wear in Cork. The word gay, which had an entirely broader meaning up until then was suddenly corralled and was becoming associated with just one group. I still don’t know if the sudden change to A Wear was prompted by the new emerging fear of giving offence, or was it fear of losing sales? This was still the 1980s when all sorts of things could be said. Roll on to this week, there is the prospect of hundreds of jobs if we strike oil off Kerry, but a new set of sins has emerged that will actually threaten the whole thing – climate emergency is the category here. We have the green candidate in Kenmare, herself a onetime journalist in Kerry berating the media for taking a helicopter ride to be shown around for the oil industry. “Horrendous,” she said. Afterwards she announced there is to be a protest at the airport on Sunday. And then we have all the sins now to do with the habits of ingestion – I was shocked to find that food is categorised as “syn” in one of the popular slimming programmes. Smoking is sinful, drinking wine is becoming sinful, and so on and so on.

Columnist ANNE LUCEY gives her take on happenings in Killarney, Kerry and beyond

In third class we filled copy after copy on catechism and church teaching. The seven deadly cardinal and seven venial sins and rules of the church were all categorised. And we also had the likely penalties in terms of where the sin might land you and for how long. It was all very neat. There was a clear picture of purgatory and hell. And of course heaven was mentioned – but in school, as elsewhere, heaven was always that bit vague, I have to say. The whole thing was brilliant methodology. You knew where you stood on everything and I remember even for First Communion and first confession being able to go down a list of sins and deciding that I had no sins - but must come up with something - so sewing on Sunday was a winner alright! And it would not attract much more than the three Hail Marys which I knew. At the time I made up my own curses, so that was not bad language as such I reasoned. The undermining of eternal sin began when Catholics here started reading the Bible and found there was little or no authority for any of them, apart from murder and wife stealing. But sin was a very handy way of organising lives and with it - society! We have thrown out a lot of the old sins, for example eating meat on Fridays and such on the basis of lack of authority, and replaced them with ones that are more emotional and immediate than eternal. Causing offence seems to be the catalyst for a good share of the new sins. Causing offence on social media is more serious again. But, who is the authority for the new

Oil industry is a major boost The arrival of the global oil industry is surely exciting. In what is seen as a major boost for Kerry Airport, Babcock, the off shore helicopter carrier headquartered in Aberdeen, Scotland has set up a base at the airport to ferry personnel and rigging staff to and from the rig 230 kilometres off Kerry over the next five months. A huge

ship to explore oil is on its way from England. Three flights a week by the huge G-Vint 19-seater helicopters familiar in the North Sea are scheduled. The machines will fly as high as possible to minimise the noise over the Kingdom. Airplane flights from Dundee, as many as three a week have also begun arriving in Kerry.

If oil or gas is found, the Killarney/ Tralee hub looks set to be the base for hundreds of people directly employed on the rigs, a briefing for public representatives, chambers of commerce and invited members of the press in Kerry was told on Monday. The crews of the Babcock pilots and engineers are already based in Killarney and the boating end of the operation

ones? And what are they based on? I would love to know this. Who is it who sets the new sins? And could we please have a list drawn up of the new "likely to cause offence" sins, venial, cardinal, and the social penalties for each? What we really need I sometimes think, is a re-education camp - a kind of Pol Pot thing where you undo incorrect thinking. The camp would also instil in us the new puritan dogma and teach us to police our thoughts the correct way, or, er….the new acceptable way. Only that it better be a short course so we don’t slip once we come out! An App that can be updated and announce the inclusion of each new sin – thoughtless use of plastic, unnecessary use of air travel, having more time for humans than animals, believing animals and humans are not equal, inadvertently complimenting single gender people thereby insulting people of multiple gender, dressing your daughter in pink and your son in blue thereby hampering them for life with unreasonable expectations attaching to male and female might all be sins. We are entitled to know! Those thought police who set many of the new sins must have the backbone to come out and name them and end the reign of terror and confusion. But, could I also suggest we have a taught police – in other words if we err in our thoughts, if we say the wrong thing on Twitter after a few glasses of vin ordinaire, it is probably on the basis of what we were taught rather than what we had thought! will be based at Foynes, Co. Limerick. 600 people will work off shore and hundreds more jobs will be created in Kerry. The pilot and engineer crews are based in Killarney. It is all good news - but the announcement as I finish this column that the Greens are holding a protest at the airport on Sunday is surely short-sighted. Most of the protesters, will arrive by bus or car using oil drilled in Saudi or Iraq, and transported here. Would it not be greener, i.e. less sinful to have the oil from Foynes?

New date and additional cycle route for Valley 70 Cycle Following a successful event last year which hosted 250 cyclists from across Kerry, the Valley 70 returns with a new date and an additional short, flat route. Launched this week by members of

We look forward to a great day.” There will be over 40 stewards and road crew in attendance on the day to ensure visibility and safety in all aspects of the event. Food is available before the cycle, as well as rest and refuel stops at the top of the Gap climb and at the Sneem Road junction plus a BBQ at the finish line. You can book your ticket online at: www.valley70.weebly.com or register in person at Fossa Community Centre on Saturday, June 8, from 7-9pm or from 7.30am on Sunday, June 9 - the day of the cycle. The cycle costs €25 per person and €15 for U16s who must be accompanied by an adult. The roll off is at 9am sharp. All cyclists must wear a helmet. Discounts are available for adult groups and U16 groups by calling John on 086 8121029. Further details are on Facebook: @thevalley70cycle.

Healthy lifestyle flagged up at one local school One local school is making a substantial contribution to the health and well-being of its pupils after raising their first ever Health Promoting Schools flag on Tuesday afternoon. Staff, pupils, parents and children from Tiernaboul National School, along with some members of Barraduff Men's Shed, gathered together to raise flag at lunchtime. The school community has transformed over to a healthier environment, not only though education on diet, but by focusing on mindfulness also. In February 2018, they took on the chal-

lenge of promoting a healthier environment and Tuesday’s flag raising ceremony, which was attended by Michelle Foley, Health Promotion Officer with the HSE, was the culmination of all their hard work. It began as an initiative by Donna Griffin in Creative Kids Preschool which is attached to the school. Fiona Cronin, who is a Special Needs Assistant at the school and Health Promotions coordinator, said that the younger children were then coming into the school and they saw the positive impact it had had on them. “We saw the positive impact it had on the children,” she told the Killarney Ad-

vertiser. “We felt it was the next step for us.” With the programme, not only did they introduce a Buddy Bench made by the members of Barraduff Men’s Shed, yoga classes, mindfulness and healthy eating, but also invited guest speakers including a dentist, dietician and a road safety of-

ficer. They are also a very active school with pupils taking part in football, swimming, soccer and golf, have set up a ‘Move It Monday’ and ‘Try It Tuesday’. “Food Dudes is a huge part of it as well,” she said. “And yoga is something we’d like to do more of.”

Enquiries into possible voting interference | By Sean Moriarty

Killarney sisters set for American performance

Gardaí are this week carrying out preliminary enquiries into possible interference into the Supplementary Register of voters.

“No formal complaint has been made to An Garda Síochána in Killarney,” a spokesperson for the Gardai said. “However, an Garda Síochána is now carrying out preliminary enquiries into the alleged matter.”

The allegations, believed to be in the Killarney area, centre on bulk applications by an individual to add members of the public to the electoral register. Normal procedure decrees that individuals must have their application signed by a member of the Gardaí while in the police officer’s presence. It is understood that an unnamed individual presented several application forms to the Gardaí and got them stamped without the applicants being present. Voting in the local and European elections, and divorce referendum takes place next Friday.

Kerry County Council, who manages the register of eligible voters in the county, confirmed that local Gardai had contacted them in relation to the allegations, but that they had not received any other complaints on the matter. “Kerry County Council has not received any complaint in relation to the Supplement to the Register of Electors for the forthcoming elections,” said a Council spokesperson. “Kerry County Council can confirm that An Garda Síochána contacted the Council in relation to information to assist them with their queries.”

Back in 2017, little did Killarney sisters Patrice O’Connor (Davern) and Clodagh McCarthy know that the sing-song after Patrice’s wedding would become a viral sensation. Now with over 100 million views worldwide, the girls have already recorded a number of tracks, which are available to download on Spotify, to satisfy demand, particularly from the American market. The video, featuring Patrice and Clodagh’s vocals, was even recently remixed into a dance floor tune by a UK based DJ. Their latest venture is to take their live music to America, as the girls have been asked to perform at the upcoming Irish Fest in the Barn event, which takes place in the Sugarland Barn, Arena in Madison, Wisconsin on May 26. Patrice and Clodagh will perform in

front of thousands of concert goers at the event which includes dance, culture and music and is set on a pastoral farm, encouraging families to bring picnics and enjoy the entertainment. Patrice and Clodagh aka ‘The Rattlin Bog Sisters’, were contacted by American music promoter Bonnie Sommers-Olsen to play at the event due to their popularity online, particularly with an American audience, and they will perform a music set backed by an American band, alongside popular local, regional and international acts, including Boxing the Compass, the Moxie Strings, West Wind, Rising Gael, Trian and Jig Jam.

Election candidate calls for additional ambulances Fianna Fáil local election candidate Neily O’Connor is calling for additional vehicles and personnel to be provided to the ambulance service in Killarney. At the moment there is only one urgent and one transfer ambulance available at the base in the town, he explained. “We urgently need additional ambulances and personnel in Kerry to reduce response times across the county,” he said. “Lengthy ambulance response

times are all too common across Kerry, particularly in more rural areas, and I am greatly concerned that people are being put at risk because ambulances are not arriving with patients within the recommended 19-minute window. “This official response time is particularly important in cardiac situations, whereby eight minutes is the target; but over the past number of years we have seen compliance with that time limit deteriorate.”

Brendan Cronin

Donal Grady

ADDRESS: Ballyhar, Killarney

ADDRESS: 2 Maple Drive, Killarney

AGE: 60

AGE: 71

Married to Noreen and has three children, Claire, Adrian and Kevin

I have eight children, Joan, Carla, Doroty, Denise, Colin, Mike, John and Martin.

OCCUPATION: Public Representative for 20 years and farmer

OCCUPATION: Politician and retired Fire Officer

PARTY: Independent/Non-Party.

I’m a member of the Drugs Liaison Committee which I’m proud to have set up when first elected, along with my brother Sean. My father John was a town councillor for 11 years and my brother Sean served for 40 years. I’m representing the people since 1999 and not afraid to speak up about more social and affordable houses to be built, a traffic plan that works, more parking spaces, a one tier health service. Killarney’s homeless, rates, parking and planning to be put back into the town it’s being collected in. Broadband to be rolled out in every home school and business. Mental health awareness, drug rehab and support, and more gardai on the streets including patrolling of estates.

I am seeking re-election to continue being an active local representative in the Killarney Municipal District. I have always sought public accountability and transparency within our local government structures. If re-elected, my commitment is to continue to work for the future growth, development and recognition of local communities, both rural and urban. Being an outspoken independent, I can stand up for those that need a voice in our area, and I intend to continue this work free from party policies. I will maintain my record of being a persistent, determined and experienced independent voice at Council meetings. I appeal for your Number 1 vote on polling day to let me continue this work.

PARTY: Independent

OCCUPATION: Teacher

OCCUPATION: Administrative Assistant at Workers Rights Centre SIPTU PARTY: Labour I have nearly 30 years working in politics as a Secretarial Assistant and as a Public Representative. I have represented your views to the best of my ability. If you the people chose to elect me to Kerry County Council, I guarantee to work hard to deliver on issues such as road safety, will work to improve road surfaces, more social and affordable housing, planning, and ensure that the Kilcummin Sewerage Scheme is finally delivered. I will also work closely with stake holders to promote tourism and businesses. I would also make health issues a priority and will continue my campaign to have the Town Councils reinstated.

PARTY: Independent I have served on Kerry County Council since March, 2016. In that time I believe I have been a consistent and hard-working public representative for the Killarney Municipal District. I am proud to stand as a truly independent candidate where I can speak on behalf of the people’s agenda and not of a political party agenda. I believe it is essential that the Killarney Municipal District has a strong female voice. I am the youngest candidate running in the Killarney District, and I believe I am best placed to represent the concerns and obstacles facing our younger generations. Whilst I am a first time candidate, I am an experienced candidate. I am extremely proud of the area I have represented over the last three years, I am acutely aware of the issues that it faces and respectfully ask for the chance to continue to work on and resolve these challenges.

OCCUPATION: Musican/Singer

OCCUPTION: Public Representative

I wish to continue my involvement in providing a healthier environment for all and especially in seeking to ensure that our young people would work towards eliminating the pollutants that poison and degrade the land, water and air. My efforts in this regard find public expression in my involvement with Killarney Looking Good, participating with the Meitheal, giving Councillors Allocation to worthwhile projects. I will very actively promote cycling and safe bicycle parking, as not only a healthier option but as a means of reducing traffic levels. I have over the years proposed and pursued worthwhile projects such as the Cahersiveen Greenway, the provision of a fully staffed Stroke Unit in UHK and the refund of money to Nursing Home residents who were wrongly charged by the State.

PARTY: Fianna Fail

PARTY: Fianna Fail

We were always encouraged at home to engage in politics, on the issues of the day, in community and in parish. So I am very aware of the importance and the significance of politics in the lives of people. I am self-employed as a professional musician for over 30 years and have engaged with people and their issues up and down the country. I was deeply humbled to be involved in a fundraiser for Crumlin Children’s Hospital in the raising of €30,000. I am running in this election to be a new voice for the people of this area, to represent them with integrity and respect for their needs and their interests. I stand before you as a man who respects you, will listen to you, and will work for you.

It has been a great pleasure and learning experience for me to have worked with my colleagues and the officials and staff of Kerry County Council over the past five years. At 33, I remain one of the youngest elected representatives in Kerry but the experience, knowledge and wisdom I have gained during my time in office has been an incredible advantage. It has enabled me to obtain a clear vision of what the Killarney Municipal District and Kerry as a whole needs going forward if the county is to maximise its enormous potential. I accept that we all have to work within boundaries but we can work smarter and faster to get the job done which has to be to everyone’s aspiration. It is imperative that when we say things are going to be done, they are done.

Married to Mairead and has two sons Denis and Danny

Married to Kathy and has two children, Amy and Darragh

OCCUPATION: Secretarial Assistant to Martin Ferris TD

OCCUPATION: Public Representative

OCCUPATION: Hotelier

PARTY: Fine Gael

PARTY: Non-Party

I was co-opted in 2007 and subsequently elected in 2009 and 2014 and elected as Mayor of Kerry County Council 2017-18. I am a member of IRD Duhallow and a member of Killarney Drugs Liaison Committee, the Killarney National Parks and Leisure Committee and a member of Tralee Road Residence Committee. I am also committed to Killarney Tidy Towns Association and the Environmental Protection Agency. I have served in the South Kerry Partnership and the HSE Health Executive Forum, the VEC committee and am also a member of the Legion GAA Club Killarney. I've worked very hard for the last 12 years for the people of Killarney. I would like to thank everyone who supported me and hope that they will support me again on the 24.

I spent 10 years on the Killarney Town Council and served as Mayor 11 years ago. I come from a family business and learned everything from my parents, Dermot and Eileen. I have been heavily involved in sport all my life and enjoy volunteering my time. I decided to run late as I had a look at the candidates and felt I bring a different opinion on business, sport and quality of life issues. I feel Killarney needs a voice. I would be honoured if the people of the Killarney electoral area saw their way to giving me their Number 1 and I promise to bring experience and a voice for issues like young driver insurance, SME insurance, roads like Killarney to Kilcummin, footpaths etc. And most importantly parking and traffic flow in the town.

PARTY: Sinn Fein I grew up in St Brendan’s Place where I still live today. I work for Martin Ferris TD as his Secretarial Assistant, so I am deeply involved in both local and national politics and I’ve a strong interest in my local community. Since the abolition of the Town Councils, Killarney has lost its voice in relation to vital services as well as infrastructural funding and projects in the Killarney area. Local representation is the corner stone to a progressive society. I can offer a fresh, strong, local voice. If elected I will prioritise the protection and promotion of Killarney National Park, address traffic congestion, road infrastructure, job investment, address the housing crisis, tourism and oppose any increases in the Property Tax.

Ladies football plan night at the dogs Kerry Ladies Gaelic Football (LGFA) has literally gone to the dogs – well next week they will be – as they are planning a fundraising night at the dogs. Both club and county have joined forces to create a unique fundraiser for the betterment of ladies football in Kerry. All funds raised on Saturday, May 25 will be distributed evenly between club and county ensuring the growth of club football and the participation of county teams at intercounty level. With a 10-card race on the night, there promises to be a host of other activities to appeal to all the family from music, raffles, face painting, bouncing castle and a club relay race at the Kingdom Greyhound Track. “The club relay race will consist of a team of four from each club racing against other clubs in their club jerseys, adding a novel race to the evening’s proceedings,” Paul Murphy, PRO with LGFA Ker-

ry, said. “There is an added incentive for the clubs who sell the most tickets of having their affiliations fees paid for the 2020 season, along with four O’Neill’s footballs for that club.” The senior team will be in attendance on the night for fans to meet their heroes and a chance for photographs and autographs to be taken, he added. Tickets can be sourced from your local club and if any business would like to place an advertisement in the race program, they can do so by contacting Anthony on 087 2713507 or treasurer. kerry@lgfa.ie, or Paul 087 7665344 or pro.kerry@lgfa.ie. Advertisements costs start at €100 for a full page and €50 for a half page.

Euro election hopeful says it’s the right time to enter politics A Killarney resident, who is running as a candidate for the forthcoming European elections is also in the process of writing a book on Killarney, its history and people. | By Sean Moriarty Woodlawn resident Walter Ryan-Purcell (55) has enjoyed a career in many sectors including 30 years in farming/ food, Industrial Composting, and Renewable Energy Industries. He qualified with a Bachelor of Agricultural Science from UCD, a Marketing degree from Marketing Institute of Ireland and a Management and Marketing degree with Boston College. In recent years, he qualified as a Fáilte Ireland tour guide. It was this latter role that inspired his book, and having completed a book on Kinsale he is now in the process of completing one on Killarney. For two years he operated the café at Deenagh Lodge, that was before he decided to throw his hat into the ring for the European elections.

“I got this calling that it was the right time to enter politics,” Walter, who operates under the tagline ‘Common Sense Politics’, told the Killarney Advertiser. “We have thousands of people homeless yet hundreds of houses lying empty. I have experience in renewable energy where farmers can create as much energy as food and make money. We should be giving our national broadband plan to the ESB and not some equity firm who will own it forever. Why are we always giving away our infrastructures? Politicians do not understand beef farming, they never caught a shovel in their lives. Everything is wrong and it is time for a change.” His book, ‘Walter’s Way: Killarney’ will be based on his experiences as a tour guide.

Locals plan Council protest over battery storage facility

| Dan O’Connor

Conor Myles and Dan O’Connor,

Partners of Terence F. Casey & Company Solicitors, 99 College Street, Killarney, present information on legal issues

MINIMUM RATES OF PAY Generally, the amount of pay an employee receives for work done is a matter for agreement between the employee and the employer. However, most employees are entitled to a minimum wage under the National Minimum Wage Act 2000. This Act permitted the payment of rates under the national minimum wage for those under the age of eighteen years. The Employment Miscellaneous Provisions Act, 2018, has amended the National Minimum Wage Act, 2000, in respect of employees who are under the age of twenty years and it further appeals the section in relation to trainee rates. The Act permits the Minister to prescribe a percentage of the national minimum hourly rate of pay for employees who have not reached eighteen years of age, who have reached eighteen and who are nineteen years of age. These employees will be paid in a pay reference period at an hourly rate that is on average no less than the percentage of the national minimum hourly rate of pay prescribed by the Minister. The Employment Miscellaneous Provisions Act, 2018, further provides that where the number of hours in an employee’s Contract of Employment does not reflect the number of hours actually worked by the employee, that employee can request to be placed in a band of hours which reflects the actual hours works by an employee over a reference

period of twelve months between the date of commencement of employment and the date that the employee requested to be put in a band of hours. The employee must make a written request to be placed in a band of hours. The employer must place the employee in the appropriate band no later than four weeks from the date of receipt of the

East Kerry locals fighting the construction of a wind turbine battery storage site in their locality are set to protest outside Kerry County Council offices in Tralee on Monday. Last week the Killarney Advertiser reported that the Council had given planning permission to Redfaze Limited to build the battery storage site at Ballynahulla, Ballydesmond. The development will house 40 battery units, transformers and associated equipment. Battery storage compounds store excess electricity generated by windfarms when the wind is high - and release it back into the grid when the turbines are slack. Up to 300 angry and frustrated locals from the Gneeveguilla, Knocknagree,

Scartaglin, Kiskeam and Newmarket areas say that they fear that the batteries are potentially at high risk of going on fire which could lead to an evacuation of a 10 mile radius in the area. This week they lodged an appeal with An Bord Pleanala against planning permission for the facility on health and safety grounds. Their next step is to protest outside County Buildings, Rathass, Tralee at 10am on Monday. “An Bord Pleanala received our appeal,” Anita O’Sullivan, who is opposed to the development, said. “We are timing our protest outside the County Buildings as the councillors attend their monthly meeting. We anticipate a good turn-out.” Their main concern is the risk of fire which could result in toxic smoke.

request. The band in which the employee is placed is determined by the employer on the basis of the average number of hours worked by the employee per week during the reference period. The employer can refuse the employee’s request on named grounds, such as lack of evidence to support the employee’s claims, significant adverse changes to the business during or after the reference period or that it would not be practical for the employer to comply with the request due to exceptional circumstances or an emergency or that the average hours worked by the employee during the reference period were affected by a temporary situation which no longer existed. Get set for Kenmare Trek A 10k fundraising trek will take place on Saturday, June 15 in Kenmare to raise much needed funds for Brú Columbanus. The walk, organised with the support of Kenmare Walking Club, will go along the old Kenmare butter road from Galway’s Bridge and back to Kenmare. Walkers will be transported to the start, at Galway’s bridge. Brú Columbanus provides “home from home” accommodation for the relatives of seriously ill patients in Cork Hospitals and Hospice. Since opening in October 2005, they have accommodated in excess of 8000 families. “This is our 10th Annual Kenmare Trek and we are sure we will have a great turn out,” Anne-Maria O’Connor, who has organised the walk, said.

“It is always a fun day, an opportunity to get some exercise, have a chat and see some amazing views along the way - as well as support a fantastic cause.” She added that a family’s first concern is for the health of their loved ones, but consideration has also to be given to the practicalities of their time away from home, which is often a difficult and emotional time – that’s why the charity was chosen. “Where people stay and how the stay is financed, are worries that can be alleviated from families accommodated in Brú Columbanus. Brú Columbanus is an independent charity and relies completely on donations and fundraising initiatives.” Registration is €20 and can be done online at www.brucolumbanus.com or by calling 021-4345754 or 087 2787 074.

Bridging loan to help Micro Track construction | By Sean Moriarty

Community loan finance group Clann Credo is the latest organisation to lend its support to the Killarney Micro Track project. Construction is expected to start in June and last week Tom Collins of Moloney Contractors signed the work contract with project officials. The group behind the project are

still a few thousand euros shy of the €480,000 total and will in the next few weeks launch a series of final fundraising drives to meet the shortfall including the raffling of a vintage tractor in association

with the Killarney Valley Classic Vintage Club. However, it will take some time to gather the remaining funds and construction would not be possible without Clann Credo steeping in with a bridging loan. Clann Credo is a social enterprise that provides loans to community organisations, charities and social enterprises on

terms and conditions that may not be available to them commercially. “The group discussed in January, that partial construction to save on cost wouldn’t have been permitted by grant rules and abandoning of the project would have been an incredible disappointment,” Jeremiah Griffin, Project Coordinator, said. “Then taking the courageous decision of building now was the only path to take. However, we need the support of the community to help raise the rest to continue.” Construction will start on June 24 and is expected to be complete by early September.

Man dies climbing Carrauntoohil Over 20 members of the Kerry Mountain Rescue Team (KMRT) were tasked with recovering a man’s body after he fell to his death while attempting to climb Carrauntoohil last Saturday. The man fell approximately 600ft from the crest of Hag’s Tooth Ridge onto a ledge above Coimín Íochta. Volunteers were contacted by Killarney Gardaí around 12.20pm on Saturday. A full callout was initiated and the man’s body was located at approximately 1pm. Irish Coast Guard Helicopter 115 arrived from Shannon to assist but were unable to reach the position due to the complex

nature of the terrain. Rescue 115 then airlifted four members of KMRT and equipment to a col above the scene of the accident, and a further 20 members of the rescue team were deployed on foot from Ard na Locha in the Hag’s Glen. A difficult recovery operation ensued, with multiple roped stretcher lowers required to safely bring the man’s body back to Ard na Locha for Landrover transfer to Lisleibane and subsequent handover to An Garda Síochána. A total of 26 team members were involved in the rescue operation which concluded at 6pm.

Rugby club’s family fun day to become an annual fixture Killarney Rugby Football Club’s family fun day is set to become an annual occasion following the success of last Saturday’s inaugural event. | By Sean Moriarty The club celebrated the official opening of its new pitches at its grounds in Aghadoe last weekend with a day of demonstrations, awards and fun for members of all ages. Highlights of the day included the award presentation for last season where members aged between six and 49 were recognised for their 2018 efforts. A friendly rugby match between the captain’s and president’s 15s was contested by past and present members. There was also a rugby 7s style demonstration game and ladies match. Activities got underway at 1.30pm and continued until after 9pm that evening. According to club PRO, Liam Murphy, the success of Saturday’s event was largely down to the extended member-

ship, each making a collective effort to make sure the day went without a hitch. The club is trying to encourage more community-based activities and the new facilities unveiled on the day will help them achieve this. Prior to Saturday’s opening of the new pitches the underage and senior teams played at different locations in the town. “Saturday was very successful and this was down to volunteers working across each activity,” Liam told the Killarney Advertiser. “It is a big deal for us, one pitch and one club and we had adult members looking after junior activities and underage teams managing the bouncy castles and other kid’s events. The club and committee are very proud of what we did and that we involved a broad spectrum within the club.”

How to get rid of slugs naturally Slugs! Why are there so many? The mild winters here are definitely to blame, and spring is the time eggs hatch. They seem to be waiting in regiments to munch their way through everything, and in retaliation we scatter blue pellets of certain death. But have you ever wondered how and why these pellets work? The toxic ingredient in slug pellets is metaldehyde, which is lethal to slugs and snails because it damages the cells which produce mucus. This causes the slug to first produce huge amounts of slime and then dehydrate. Slug pellets are essentially made from bran, which slugs adore, which is dipped in metaldehyde. The blue colour is added to make it unappealing to children and pets. Between one percent and five percent of the actual pellet is poison, which is why it sometimes seems that one brand of pellets is more effective than another. If used in small amounts they are not toxic to larger animals, but every year there are cases of pets being poisoned by them. It causes convulsions, breathing difficulty and a number of other symptoms. In wildlife, however, metaldehyde is posing a serious problem. The numbers of predators of slugs, such as birds, shrews and hedgehogs is decreasing significantly, while the number of slugs is increasing. Predators will eat slugs when they have ingested pellets, but it builds up in their bodies and gets passed on to their offspring, causing their slow death. Ask yourself, when are

slugs most active? During wet weather, as all gardeners know. But what happens to slug pellets in the rain – yes – they disintegrate, and the metaldehyde leaches out. So, the bran which remains is a tasty starter, before a main course of yummy Dahlia… The solution is simple, fellow gardeners: try organic slug pellets which use iron phosphate as the active ingredient. This causes the slug to dry out, which makes it unappealing for wildlife. When it decomposes it is harmless to the environment. If it gets wet it actually becomes more appealing to slugs, so, even if it is a little more expensive than traditional pellets, you will use a lot less. There is an increasing amount of manufacturers offering nature friendly slug pellets such as Doff and Neudorff. If we all try to use organic products, hopefully chemical companies will eventually change their ranges to accommodate us! Another option, which is especially handy for pots, is copper tape. Slugs cannot slither over the copper, so they will not reach your plants. In the vegetable garden, simple planks of wood are a good alternative also. In the daytime slugs will hide under the timber planks, making it easy to scrape off large numbers at a time – into a pot of salt, boiling water, or a ditch down the road. In time, you will see large beetles under the planks, and these are a welcome sight as they are natural predators of slugs. It is, of course, best practice to encourage as many natural predators of slugs into our gardens as possible. The less chemicals we use, the more wildlife we will see!

Wee Paddies charm their way to Lip Sinc success | By Sean Moriarty The night was very exciting, the talent tremendous, with over 400 were entertained at the Rathmore Ravens Basketball Club ‘Lip Sinc Kids’ contest. Over 50 local children formed nine acts and took to the stage in the Heights Hotel, Killarney on Saturday night, as the club also celebrated its 10th anniversary. The winners, the Wee Paddies, did their research and charmed the two surprise judges into victory. They presented Kerry footballer Paul Murphy with a replica Sam Maguire Cup and a bunch of roses to Mary Hickey, the 2014 Kerry Rose. The earned their victory by performing ‘Tell Me Ma’ and a Riverdance routine.

The Peoples’ Vote went to Rathmore Dynamos who performed their version of ‘Momma Mia’. “It was a fantastic community occasion,” Lorraine Dineen of Rathmore Ravens Basketball Club said. “The fact that so many people turned up shows how much the basketball club means to the area.” Rathmore Ravens has over 180 members registered and the club is renowned, in particular for the strength and skill of its juvenile teams. This season they also launched a senior men’s team which has been a fantastic addition to the club with the senior stars playing in front of huge home crowds. This fundraising event will help to meet the costs of running the club and supporting and developing players to the highest level.

Conceived in Germany during the run-up to World War II, the Beetle became an icon of car culture across the world. “The loss of the Beetle after three generations, over nearly seven decades, will evoke a host of emotions from the Beetle’s many devoted fans,” Volkswagen Group of America CEO, Hinrich Woebcken, said. "It's also about the welcome, the atmosphere and the local knowledge."

Trump will visit Ireland next month US President Donald Trump will visit Ireland either side of a trip to France next month and will likely meet Taoiseach Leo Varadkar during his stay at a Trump Golf Resort. On June 6, the President and First Lady will then travel to Normandy at the invitation of President Emmanuel Macron of the French Republic to observe the 75th Anniversary of D-Day at the Normandy American Cemetery at Collevillesur-Mer. President Donald Trump and First Lady Melania Trump have already

accepted the invitation of Her Royal Majesty Queen Elizabeth II to visit the United Kingdom from June 3 to 5. Trump, who cancelled his first visit to Ireland in November for scheduling reasons, is due to arrive at the Doonbeg resort on June 5, following his State visit to Britain and then return to the Irish west coast on June 7-8 after his stop off in France. The Irish Government is still waiting on official confirmation of the visit, while the US Government has yet to make an official announcement. “We don’t have official confirma-

tion yet, but there is a protocol around these matters and protocol says that the announcement has to come from the White House,” said Varadkar. Given the world’s love/hate relationship with Trump, any state visit to any country is likely to cause division between supporters and haters. The Unite Trade Union has urged the Government to tell him that he is not welcome to visit Ireland. On Monday, delegates at the union’s policy conference in Dublin passed a motion opposing a visit to Ireland.

Exiles borrow hurls after airline loses team equipment Contesting the All-Ireland Hurling Championship is a difficult task, especially for a county that is not considered a traditional hurling county.

Low budget Irish film is a surprising hit!

But the task is even more difficult for the London county team. The Exiles play in the Christy Ring Cup, the second tier hurling competition for so-called weaker counties. From now until their championship run comes to an end, the first thing they must do is get their panel of players and team management on to an aeroplane and arrive in Ireland for a match. So what happens when Aer Lingus lose

your baggage on the way? The London Senior Hurling Team had to borrow hurls for their recent tie with Meath after their equipment didn't arrive on time! Their hurls, which were checked in in a protective bag, didn't arrive on their Saturday afternoon flight from Heathrow to Dublin. The equipment was then meant to reach the team before their Christy Ring Cup clash with the Royals last Sunday, but when it didn't, London players had to borrow hurls for the game. The Exiles went on to lose the match 2-23 to 0-13.

Irish budget movie ‘Lost & Found’ has become a surprising hit in the US - breaking the box office figures made by famine movie ‘Black 47’ and the H-block film ‘Maze’. ‘Lost and Found’ looks set to triple numbers made by both movies despite being made on a minuscule budget of under €70,000, having opened in North America in March 2019. Already six weeks into its run, the movie is going strong in New York and Boston, and has just opened in Chicago and Washington DC. Based on true stories, ‘Lost & Found’ is

a feature film with seven interconnecting stories set in and around a ‘Lost and Found’ office of an Irish train station. Not only did the movie's world premiere at the Galway Film Fleadh sell out instantly, but it won ‘Best Foreign Film’ at the 2018 Arizona International Film Festival and was a buzz title at the recent 25th Austin Film Festival last November.

Along with the quality assurance standards, properties must meet additional criteria including being named on the ‘World’s Best’ lists from

all of the top travel publications, and an agreement from the Preferred Travel Agent Advisory Board. “We were thrilled to receive the news that we are an approved member of the ‘Legend Collection' of Preferred Hotels & Resorts properties,” Michael Brennan, Managing Director of Killarney Hotels said. “We are immensely proud of this honour, and amongst the incredible company of less than 100 hotels worldwide. Three members of An Garda Síochána arrested Three members of An Garda Síochána are in custody after being arrested yesterday morning (Thursday). They were detained for questioning arising from suspicion that they have been involved in one or more criminal offences. Garda sources would not reveal where the arrests were made - but it is widely understood to be in the Munster area. A Garda Superintendent has been arrested for suspected breach of the provisions of section 62 of the Garda Síochána Act, 2005. Section 62 concerns information obtained by a garda during the course of their duties, which is likely to have a harmful effect if disclosed. A Garda Inspector has been arrested for suspected breach of provisions of the Misuse of Drugs Act, 1977-84. A member of Garda rank has been

arrested for suspected conspiracy to pervert the course of justice. The Assistant Commissioner, Special Crime Operations involving personnel attached to the Garda National Bureau of Criminal Investigation and the Garda National Drugs & Organised Crime Bureau led the operation. A number of premises were searched and a number of arrests were made. Deputy Commissioner John Twomey, Policing & Security confirmed that three members of An Garda Síochána are in custody. "An Garda Síochána is fully committed to investigating any alleged wrong-doing or corruption involving Garda personnel, and will work with other relevant agencies in doing so,” said Commissioner Twomey. “As this is a live and ongoing investigation, it is not appropriate to make any further comment at this time.”

Successful Killarney athletes will go forward to the county finals following a successful Killarney Community Games Athletics qualifiers at Killarney Community College last Friday evening. The county finals will take place at An Riocht Athletic Club in Crageens, Castleisland on June 23 and 24. “We had a very good night on Friday,”

said organiser Billy Hennigan. “The turnout was great and we had lots of good races from U8 to U16. We are very hopeful of the boys U16 4x100 relay team. Our U14s won the national title two years ago, the first from Kerry to do this and they retained the title last year. 4,000 take part in ‘Nathan’s Walk’ Darkness Into Light Organisers of the annual ‘Nathan’s Walk’ Darkness Into Light have hailed this year’s event as a massive success after 4,000 people walked through Killarney National Park in the early hours of Saturday morning. The annual walk was founded by Marie O’Carroll who lost her son Nathan to suicide in 2007. The 5k walk, which began at 4.15am, follows a route from Killarney Racecourse through the National Park. By the time the participants return to the racecourse it is daylight, therefore taking people who suffer from depression from the darkness into the light. “It was a fantastic turnout,” said Marie. “I would like to thank all those who turned up on the night, the committee and our sponsors.” Meanwhile in London, two Darkness Into Light events took place for the first time, with both walks organised by people with strong Killarney connections. The north London event is now in its fifth year. Over 1,000 walkers gathered outside the famous Crown Hotel ahead of a lap of Gladstone Park in the heart of the Cricklewood community. Killarney woman Tara Cronin chaired this event. “We simply can't believe the momentum that the walk is generating every year,” she said. “We have to thank all

of our volunteers from the marshals to the registration administrators to the t-shirt collection team. Without you all this would have been impossible. We would also like to thank the staff and management team at the Clayton Crown Hotel. They are a fantastic support year after year. Lastly, I have to thank Pieta House and Immigrant Association for Counselling and Psychotherapy (ICAP). Our hard work goes towards supporting these charities but without their support the walk wouldn't have such a profound purpose." A new event based in Sunbury on Thames took place for the first time last weekend on the grounds of London Irish Rugby Club’s training ground. It was organised by another Killarney native, Liam Kearney. “On behalf of The Board of Directors of Hazelwood, the home of London Irish, we are pleased to host such a hugely relevant event,” he said. “ For us walking it was a special evening and the enthusiasm of the participants and organisers will ensure increased success after this inaugural year.”

Time to put your best foot forward! After the long winter it’s time to get the feet out and get sandal ready! However, as they’ve been covered up for so many months it’s time to look at your foot health. Corns and calluses may be getting you down and also slowing you down. It’s easier than you think to have them treated. As a professional foot practitioner, I have the skills to ease your pain away. Hard skin is unsightly and sore, but can be removed with my medical blade and acidic peel to reveal beautiful soft skin which will be more comfortable to stand on. Clients often tell me they are too embarrassed to have them treated, but I’ll be honest, it’s my job and at this stage I have seen and treated everything - absolutely nothing would shock me. It’s so rewarding to be able to improve how someone feels. I have treated ingrown and fungal toe nails with great results. Another issue clients have is they don’t realise it can be treated. With a little help from myself and

some homecare afterwards your feet will feel much lighter and a lot less sore. If you’re suffering in silence and think you have to put up with it all because you don’t know what’s wrong, let me have a look and advise you on how to put your best foot forward. Hopefully we have a long hot summer ahead and those toes will be out a lot. We offer a range of different treatments to get you walking, hiking and dancing without an ache or a pain. Reflexology is also a fantastic treatment if your feet are feeling tired, heavy and just not right. As a registered reflexologist it is covered by VHI, Laya and all other health insurance companies. To book a consultation call Jill on 064 6632966

Starcamp launch was spellbinding Be under no illusion - the official launch of Starcamp 2019 was pure magic! Keith Barry was on hand at the weekend to remind children of the Starcamp ethos, “Believe in yourself and you can achieve anything!”. As Starcamp kicks off their biggest and best summer camp line up to date, they have teamed up with the renowned mind magician to send out a national reminder to parents everywhere that the use of the imagination, courage and self-esteem are incredibly positive tools for children for life. In Kerry this year, Starcamps will take place in Killarney from July 8-12, Kenmare July 29 – August 2, Listowel August 6-10, Tralee July 1-5, Castleisland August 12-16. “Children simply need to play, pretend, dream and be happy in a safe environment, where they are encouraged and praised,” Aideen O’ Grady, Starcamp Director, said. “Starcamp is for everyone, not just the born performers,” Keith Barry says. With over 40 percent boys now in attendance, it truly is a camp with broad appeal and its benefits are reaching boys and girls everywhere. The camp will include singing, hip-hop, acting, arts and

crafts, confidence building, news-reporting, camp games, superheroes, star Olympics, surprises galore – but there will be a special focus this year on magic, the use of the imagination and…. comedy! Starcamp was a memorable winner on Dragon’s Den, has won numerous awards and is widely recognised for leading the way in what it does. With a number of camps already booked out, don’t delay in securing your place. Every child receives a Starcamp t-shirt, cert and lots more! Starcamp will run in over 220 towns nationwide for a week at a time. The camp runs for five days, from 9.30 - 2.30pm, and children aged 4-12 will be subdivided into their own age groups for advancing programs. For a limited time, they offer an instalment option whereby €20 will secure your place. Book your Starcamp now, places are limited. See www.starcamp.ie or call 021-4377900.

New initiative to enhance Kerry’s reputation for food and drink Over fifty businesses and individuals from Kerry attended Fáilte Ireland’s ‘Taste the Island’ workshop in the Great Southern Hotel yesterday (Thursday). This was part of a series of workshops taking place across Ireland over the next number of weeks to develop a programme of food and drink experiences that can be included in the ‘Taste the Island’ initiative. The new initiative will showcase Ireland’s world-class food and drink cul-

ture across the island of Ireland from September to November by providing visitors with access to authentic food and drink experiences, high quality local ingredients and world class Irish food and drink produce. “The range and quality of food and drink businesses and experiences that we

Noretta’s nut milks target organic market A local food producer from Killarney who produces organic handpressed nut milks which are delivered door-to-door, is participating in Ireland’s first food and design festival today. Noretta Brosnan, will showcase her business ‘All Full Up’ at Design POP, which runs until Sunday. Her products include homemade nut milks which are 100 percent natural with no additives, stabilisers or chemicals.

They are also dairy-free, gluten-free and vegan-friendly and are sold in reusable, recyclable glass bottles. Noretta has a background in Digital Marketing and Event Management, and made the decision to leave her career at The Gleneagle Hotel Group with the intention of exploring the industry of food. “It was of great importance that I worked with the top performing cafes promoting fresh organic produce, nourishing meals, happy environments and

met at the workshop here in the Great Southern Hotel in Kerry are really world class and have the potential to drive a lot more tourists to this area,” Tracey Coughlan, Fáilte Ireland’s Food Tourism - Strategy and Programmes Manager, said. “We know that there is scope for growth around food and drink for tourists and aligned with our world-famous seascapes and landscapes, we have an incredibly strong offering to motivate tourists to visit here. What’s really im-

portant now is that people submit their proposals outlining what they are going to do for ‘Taste the Island’ for what’s shaping up to be chock full season of food festivals and events all showcasing our world class produce." To kickstart the new and exciting initiative, Fáilte Ireland have invited businesses and individuals interested in providing tourists with a food or drink experience to attend workshops in their local area.

positive vibes,” she said. “I started my own organic hand-pressed nut milk business having spent two years in Melbourne learning the trade. I wanted to integrate back in to my home community of Killarney with a product that honoured my journey and the wonderful healing effects organic, digestible and simple ingredients have on our bodies. Now studying Ayurveda, a holistic approach of listening to your body and keeping it in balance with the fast pace of modern life, the journey continues.” Noretta delivers door-to-door before 8am on Tuesday and Fridays or you can pick a bottle up from either Horan’s Health Stores in Killarney. Kerry’s biggest vintage run set for this weekend The 40th anniversary Ring of Kerry Run takes places this weekend with over 120 cars expected to take part. Organised by the Kingdom Veteran, Vintage and Classic Car Club, the run is one of just four weekend runs in Ireland. Registration opens at 9am at the Gleneagle Hotel in Killarney with an 11am start, and participants will stay overnight at the recently refurbished Derrynane Hotel. The oldest car on the run will by a Charron from 1908. A rare 1909 Belgium-made Minvera from Cork - believed to be one of only a handful of examples left in the world - will also make the run. “This is the biggest run in years,” Garrett Foley, Club Secretary, said. “The Ring of Kerry run is one of the biggest in the

whole country and we are one of only four clubs that offer an overnight run. We also run an autumn run so we are ahead of the posse as we are the only club that offer two overnight runs.” The club was founded at Farranfore Airport in September 1979, and this weekend’s run celebrates four decades of the club. The first official run was held in October 1979, and some of those who took part included John Mitchell, Joan Mitchell who was Club Secretary in the 1980s, John Gill, Club Secretary in the 1990s, Mick Ahern, John Naughton, Myles Foley

and Des Walsh. Current Club Secretary, Garrett Foley, was only six-years-old at the time and his brother Chris Foley ,who was aged seven, is now Club Webmaster. The annual dinner on Saturday night in the Derrynane Hotel is oversubscribed for the first time in years. “In recent years we only had 40 or 50 people sitting down to dinner, this year

we have over 200, but this partly to with the 40th anniversary and also our reputation of organising a very good event.” The run follows the traditional Ring of Kerry route with stop offs at the Red Fox Inn and Cahersiveen planned along the way. An optional excursion to Valentia via the ferry is also on offer. The run ends on Sunday in Kilgarvan where the organising club will be guests of the Roughty Valley Vintage Club.

Opel fans drive €900 towards Down Syndrome Kerry The third annual Kerry Opel Vauxhall vintage car run attracted 55 cars including a rare 1977 Vauxhall Centaur, which was the first soft top Vauxhall Cavalier produced by Crayford Engineering in England (pictured). Over €900 was raised by the local branch of the Opel Vauxhall Bedford Ireland Club for Down Syndrome Kerry. Sunday’s event followed traditional Kerry rally roads. “Kerry was really shown at its best as the

sun shone,” said organiser Michael Horan. “We travelled via Molls Gap, then on to Beallaghbeame Pass, onto Caragh Lake and then to Rossbeigh Strand. We would like to thank all who helped on the day to make it a fantastic success, particularly Down Syndrome Kerry, Natalie and her staff at the Killarney Heights Hotel who provided us with a wonderful venue, Killarney Gardaí and all the participants who came from as far as Sligo and Donegal to provide us with a very memorable day.”

NEWS BRIEFS... Busy junction needs better lighting At the May 2019 meeting of Killarney Municipal Area, Councillor Michael Gleeson proposed that Kerry County Council and the TII would provide adequate public lighting on the approaches to and at the Golden Nugget junction. This is a very busy vehicular junction and it is also at the western end of a dedicated walkway, which urgently requires proper lighting, he said. Kerry County Council replied that this location is part of a TII Safety Scheme being developed from the Golden Nugget to Gap Cross. The provision of lighting at this junction and in other locations is being considered as part of the Safety Scheme and is currently with the TII for their consideration. Councillor Gleeson welcomed the reply and urged the Council to try and get the lighting provided as soon as possible.

HEGARTY

GALVIN

Cherished memories of a loving husband, father and grandfather, David Hegarty, Late of Park Road, Killarney, Who departed this life on 24th of May 2014. Distance makes us far apart, And darkens my day, I have to keep remembering, You’re just a thought away. When the world is too confusing, And times are hard to bear, I pull your precious meaning, Your bright spirit from the air. If I sometimes drift into, A lonely state of mind, I gather up the memories, Of days we left behind. And though you are not beside me, I have your memory in my heart, And draw upon the warmth and love, That lives when we are apart. And with those fond reflections, Of the times when you were near, I sense a little bit of what, It’s like to have you here. Loved and missed everyday by your wife Nancy.

O’SULLIVAN

In loving memory of Mary T. Galvin, Late of “Iona”, St. Anne’s Road, Killarney, Who died on the 18th May 2017.

In loving memory of Odran (Odie) Lucey, Flesk Grove, Killarney, Who died on the 25th of May 2013.

In loving memory of our dear Mother, Grandmother and Mother-in-law, Chris O’Sullivan, late of White Bridge, Who died on 21st May, 2002.

Mother my love, If you give me your hand And go where i ask you to wander, I will lead you away to a beautiful land, The dreamland that’s waiting out yonder.

Our hearts are full of memories, With pride we speak your name Though life must go on without you, It will never be the same, Those special days will not return when we were all together, But the love and memories in our hearts, Will stay with us forever.

Some people say as time goes by The heartache will subside, But the feelings in our hearts today Are the same as the day you died.

We’ll walk in a sweet poise garden out there, Where moonlight and starlight are streaming, And the flowers and birds are filling the day, With the fragrance and music of dreaming. So Mother my love, Let me take your dear hand, And away through starlight we’ll wander. Away through mist to the beautiful land, The dreamland that’s waiting out yonder. ************** I am I, You are you, Whatever we were to each other in life, We shall remain so in death.

Lovingly remembered by your children David & Noreen, Patrick, Lisa and Alan, Maureen & Thys.

Anniversary Mass will be held in St.Mary’s Cathedral on May 31st at 6.15pm.

Sadly missed by your sons, Pat, Tommy, Seamus, Daughter-in-law Mary, Grandchildren Myles, Honor & Keith.

Could a new type of championship save intercounty football? The summer months are upon us and that means it’s time to savour the supposed pièce de résistance of Gaelic football’s unique (i.e. messy) and full (i.e. overcrowded) calendar: the championship. For over 100 years the quest for football’s biggest prize was quite straightforward. Win your province, win your All-Ireland semi-final and win your All-Ireland final. That was it. But those were simpler times and at the turn of the millennium the GAA recognised that intercounty players were giving too much time and effort to simply be turfed out of the championship after 70 minutes of football. The back door was introduced in 2001 and you would have to say that it worked. Additional games helped to strengthen traditionally weaker counties, and the GAA should be commended for breaking with tradition at the time. But that was 20 years ago and 20 years is a very long time in this age of information. Counties who had been uncompetitive for decades now have access to professional-level resources and expertise. Preparation and training has become very serious business and players, whether they line out for Dublin or Fermanagh, rightly feel as though they deserve a fair crack of the whip.

Training all year for two or three championship games, with virtually no chance whatsoever of going all the way and winning the competition, doesn’t feel like a fair crack of the whip to the no-hopers. And make no mistake, there are plenty of no-hopers. Before this year’s championship got under way, 25 of the 33 competitors were at least 100/1 to lift the Sam Maguire. 13 counties were 1,000/1 shots or worse. If you were to be realistic about it, it’s probably a four-horse race (and one horse already has a few furlongs to spare on the chasing pack). It’s only natural for there to be a disparity between the strongest and weakest teams in a competition but it also stands to reason that the more teams there are, the wider that gap will be. From a player’s point of view, there’s no enjoyment in being hammered by a team that’s far too strong for you, and there’s only fairly hollow satisfaction to be gained by hammering a team that’s far too weak for you. The same goes for the supporters of the sides in question, and casual viewers don’t like these kinds of games either. The answer seems to be staring us straight in the face: let teams play other teams of a similar standard. The National League works and that’s exactly why it does.

SPORT

17.05.2019 Dividing the championship into tiers is controversial in some people’s eyes but I see no good reason that it can’t be a success, and with the formation of the GAA Fixture Review Group now imminent, big changes could be on the cards at Congress in 2020. The first of the two proposals that are currently being floated would see Division 3 and 4 teams entering a second tier championship unless they reach their provincial final. The second would see them entering the qualifiers instead, and then moving down to the second tier if they lose their first or second round game. That might be a step in the right direction but if we’re going to revamp the championship, why not go all in? Players, both club and county, have been railing against the Gaelic football calendar for years. If the GAA are serious about affecting change, surely this is a great opportunity to do it properly.

CLUB/COUNTY

One of the biggest complaints about the current schedule is the fragmented nature of the fixtures. As certain club competitions can’t be played without intercounty stars, club teams can often go many weeks without playing and there is often uncertainty about when exactly matches will be scheduled. In fairness, the situation in Kerry isn’t as bad as it seems to be elsewhere. The month for clubs has worked very well in this part of the world and the Kerry County Board deserve great credit for running the Club Championships off so efficiently throughout the month of April. In Kerry, players love the Club Championships because the games are played in quick succession and all in one go. You have your schedule and that’s that. You know exactly where you stand. Senior clubs play senior clubs, intermediate play intermediate, and junior play junior. The games are competitive and exciting. It’s all overwhelmingly positive. So why not stick to that winning formula for every competition? Completely restructuring the calendar is easier said than done but I think it’s worth looking at very seriously if we really want to rescue an ailing football championship, while also making life a bit easier for club players who in my opinion have been underappreciated by the association for far too long. For what it’s worth, here’s my proposal for a revamped county and club calendar which would include linking a three-tier All-Ireland League with Senior, Intermediate and Junior All-Ireland Championships. Let me know what you think on Twitter (@AdamMoynihan) or by email (sport@killarneyadvertiser.ie).

Paudie’s family and friends enjoy memorial golf classic Almost 60 teams competed in a golf classic in memory of basketball legend and former Mayor of Killarney Paudie O'Connor last week with the Tatler Jack eventually emerging victorious at the famous Killeen course. | By Eamonn Keogh At the prizegiving function in The McSweeney Arms Hotel on Friday night, Paudie's brother Séamie O'Connor and daughter Morgan O'Connor Mauro presented the winning prizes. Séamie O'Connor thanked his fellow committee members, sponsors and the O'Connor family for all coming together to stage a very successful golf classic to honour Paudie's memory. He also praised the facilities at Killarney Golf Club, where he has been a member since 1974, and said he never saw the Killeen course looking so well. Proceeds from the golf classic will go towards Scotts Lakers St Paul's National League campaign and the Killarney Cardiac Response Unit.

The winning Tatler Jack team of Joey Sheehan, Richard Ferris, Con Healy and Pat O'Shea received a first prize of a round of golf at the famed Old Head Golf Links, Kinsale. In his acceptance speech, Tatler’s captain Joey Sheehan said he was humbled and delighted to win and acknowledged the presence of the O'Connor family and thanked Séamie for organising the classic. Joey recalled his own fond memories of the late Paudie and said his first introduction to the great man was back in 1972 when he was a student in the Presentation Monastery. Paudie was already an established Irish international basketballer back then and coached the local young players in the Mon and the Sem. Joey also mentioned Paudie's promi-

nent role in introducing the American players to the Irish league in 1979. As his own basketball career gradually progressed, Joey said it was an honour to play alongside the likes of Paudie, his brother Mike and Tim Regan. "We played, trained and travelled together all over Ireland and the UK. It was an education for many of us as Paudie and the senior players were role models and our heroes," he said. Joey also recalled four other men who were associated with the glory days of Killarney basketball and who have also sadly passed on to their eternal reward. Team sponsor Maurice O'Donoghue (Gleneagle Hotel) and Seán Coleman both died in 2001 while Donal O'Doherty and Denis Coffey passed away in 2011. Paudie O'Connor passed away on May 1 of last year at his home in Las Vegas at the age of 66. He is still ranked as the greatest Irish basketball player of all time and represented Ireland over 100 times. A for-

mer Irish captain, he was the first and only Irish player ever to be selected on a European All-Star first five in 1977. His visionary skills and ambition brought Irish basketball to a new level in 1979 when he brought the first American professional players to the Irish league. He was also a driving force of the popular John Player and Pretty Polly Ladies Basketball Championships that used to attract over 120 teams from all over Ireland every Easter in the 1970s and 80s. The golf classic was one of three different events over the past week remembering Paudie O'Connor. Killarney Municipal District Council and Mayor John Sheahan dedicated a roundabout to Paudie's memory at the junction linking Lewis Road and St Anne’s Road in Killarney on Monday. Paudie was also posthumously inducted into the Basketball Ireland Hall of Fame at a special ceremony in Croke Park on Saturday. The award was accepted by Paudie’s daughter, Morgan, and his brother Séamie.

Celts and Dynamos set for old school cup final GREYHOUND BAR KO CUP FINAL

_____________________________________________________________________________________________

Tralee Dynamos v Killarney Celtic Sunday at 3pm Mounthawk Park (Tralee) Two of the county’s traditional powerhouses will meet on Sunday in the Greyhound Bar KO Cup final when Killarney Celtic face old rivals Tralee Dynamos in Mounthawk Park, Tralee. With a league final against Castleisland also on the horizon, the Killarney outfit are on the hunt for a second consecutive double but for now all eyes will be firmly set on this weekend’s cup decider at KDL headquarters. Premier A table-toppers Celtic will naturally be favourites to prevail but as we’ve seen many times down through the years, anything can happen in a one-off

game. You’d have to say that it has been a fairly unexpected run to the final for Dynamos, who were relegated from the top flight last season before later being reinstated when Mastergeeha were voluntarily demoted. The Tralee club are the most successful team in the history of the league but their efforts in recent times have been hampered somewhat by the absence of a number of key players, some of whom have transferred to rival clubs. For instance, pacey forward Danny Roche moved to Sunday’s opponents, Killarney Celtic, in 2017 and has since proved his worth by netting several crucial goals for the club. Roche is currently

the league’s leading scorer with 19 goals and eight of those strikes have come in cup competitions. Dynamos have reached the final of the Greyhound on the back of victories over Atletico Ardfert, Fenit Samphires, QPR and Park with that Round 2 win over Fenit arguably the pick of the bunch. Fenit will finish fourth in the Premier A this season – two places and 10 points ahead of

Dynamos - but the Tralee club just about squeezed past them in the cup, eventually progressing after a nervy penalty shootout. In contrast, Celtic’s path to the final has been far less dramatic. After receiving a bye in Round 1, they made light work of Kilmoyley in Round 2 before defeating Castleisland 3-0 in the quarters. They secured their passage to the finale with another comprehensive win against Premier A opposition when they beat Listowel Celtic 4-0 the weekend before last. All things being equal, Celtic appear to be too strong for Dynamos at present and they should have enough about them to retain the Greyhound Bar KO Cup on Sunday. VERDICT: Killarney Celtic 3-1 Tralee Dynamos

Doherty on a Mondello mission

71

Killarney motorcycle racer Frank Doherty has moved into second in the Dunlop Irish Masters Superbike Championship following a highly successful trip to Mondello Park. | By Sean Moriarty The 2019 Dunlop Masters paid its first visit to the international track at the County Kildare venue last weekend. Doherty put his cup title aspirations back on track with two wins and a second place over rounds four, five and six of the popular national series, which is marking its tenth season. The Lissivigeen man is racing in the Cup class, a category for amateur riders or riders who have never won a championship. In April this year he finished fourth twice and fifth in the opening three rounds of the championship after issues with his Yamaha R1 Superbike’s suspension. “Last year I was running very strongly in the championship until a pretty big crash in qualifying caused an injury, which hampered me the rest of the year,” Frank told the Killarney Advertiser. “I refreshed the bike over the winter and worked on fitness quite a bit. I sprayed the bike a bright yellow from Maserati and then a friend, Séamus Walsh of Moose Design in Mallow, worked his magic on the graphics. “The bike really stands out and always gets lots of attention. Last weekend was

the second round of the Masters and my strongest weekend to date. Out of the three races I got two wins and a second. This puts me in a strong second place in the championship and I can’t wait for the next round.” Doherty, a member of Killarney and District Motor Club, started his motorsport career as a rally driver but the sheer cost of rallying forced him down the twowheeled path. “I built a rear wheel drive Corolla rally car which I rallied for a few years but found it financially impossible on apprentice wages,” he said. “After a brief spell drifting in the Prodrift Championship, I stopped motorsport for a few years. With the motorsport bug always there I bought a Yamaha R6 race bike from a good friend, Ray O’Neill, and started competing immediately.” He finished fourth in the Supersport Cup in his first year and soon after purchased the latest generation Yamaha R1 1000cc Superbike that he is currently using. Frank is supported by his employees Tricel where he works as a maintenance fitter, O’Neill’s Power Equipment, JPS Car Sales and Flesk Carpentry and Concrete Cutting.

F assbender back behind the wheel

One week after contesting the Rally of the Lakes, Hollywood A-lister and local hero Michael Fassbender was back behind the wheel of a racing car. He contested the opening rounds of the Porsche Sports Cup at Hockenheim, the home of the German Grand Prix, and drove his Porsche 991 GT3 to 11th position overall and eighth in his class out of 18 finishers in the endurance race.

He was one of three drivers to contest the race solo; all others shared driving responsibility with another pilot over the 29-lap race. On Saturday he finished 13th out 24 starters in the first race on his weekend schedule. |

B anna Rally back on 2020 calendar

The popular Kerry Winter Rally will return to the calendar next season after a two-year break. Two years ago Motorsport Ireland

asked motor clubs to reduce the number of events being organised in an effort to control rising insurance costs. Kerry Motor Club did not run the rally last year, nor will it run in its traditional mid-November date this year. However, the North Kerry based club has applied to the governing body to run the rally again in 2020 and barring, any unforeseen circumstances, the club will get its date back and the legendary end of season rally will return to its November slot on the calendar. The rally has been run under various

guises since the early 1980s but gained popularity in 1989 when it was first run out of the Banna Beach Hotel. Since then it has been universally known as the Banna Rally. |

C arlow Mini Stages Rally

Tim Enright and Stephen Buckley were the only all-Kerry crew to enter last Sunday’s Carlow Mini Stages Rally. The Ford Escort crew finished 19th overall after six very fast and hot stages near Carlow town.

All three rounds were very tight and hard fought and the Men’s club would like to thank those teams for

their great sportsmanship. The team was under the stewardship of Tom Barry and assistant John English and the management team showed great courage and foresight to make several changes to the playing pairs over the three rounds and give opportunity to the extended panel to contribute to comprehensive victory. Special thanks must also go to Enda Murphy and the course staff.
