PAGE SIX “Not all children are being treated equally” Killarney mother urges government to implement vaccine for all children BY MICHELLE CREAN A Killarney mother says not all children are being treated equally after discovering that the potentially life-saving meningitis B vaccine is only available to some children. Danielle Kissane from Park Road, who is mom to Jack (6) and Kate, who is almost 3, now faces a cost of up to €700 to vaccine both her children – but says it’s a price she’s willing to pay. Last week Danielle, discovered that a vaccination against meningitis B has been routinely offered free since October 2016 but that children born before this will not receive the B vaccine. Last Thursday she brought to issue to the attention of the nation on the Joe Duffy show. And although the vaccine can cost €115 to €150 per injection with two required, costing parents up to €300 or more per child – she’s urging parents to pay it. She has also raised the issue with TD John Brassil, spokesperson on Primary Care Community and Health Services, who says he will raise it in the Dáil next week. However, Danielle isn’t willing to wait and take the chance as she says there have been 11 cases of meningitis no-

tified to the Health Protection Surveillance Centre since the last week of December - of which three have already died. And she says that Simon Harris has rejected calls for the government to provide a free meningitis vaccine to all

children claiming it went against the advice of clinicians. “I would strongly urge any parent with children born before October 1, 2016 and that are under the age of 18 to please vaccinate your children - even if they have to pay for it,” Danielle told

the Killarney Advertiser. “You can’t take the chance. The children of this country are being discriminated against based on their date of birth, which to me makes no sense on any level and is actually putting children’s lives at risk.” Armed with her information she got in touch with Fianna Fail TD John Brassil who is the spokesperson on Primary Care Community and Health Services. “John was absolutely appalled on hearing this information and immediately set to work on his own investigations. I spoke on the Joe Duffy Show on Thursday to highlight the issue and by that evening John Brassil was speaking about it on Drivetime. John will also be raising it in the Dáil next week when it returns, where he will be calling for full vaccinations.” She added that it is not just young children affected – the disease affects all ages and is quite prevalent in college students. “The bottom line here is that there should be a law put in place that if a vaccine schedule changes there should be catch up vaccines put in place for all children who did not receive the vaccine regardless of their date of birth.”

“Pedestrian crossing is dangerous”

Councillor calls on Council to extend crossing time Killarney locals have expressed their concerns saying one particular pedestrian crossing doesn’t allow them time to cross a busy road safely. Locals have called on Cllr Michael Gleeson to ask the Council to remedy the High Street pedestrian crossing – saying they’re in danger trying to get across in time as the ‘Greenperson’ walk time is too short. Pedestrians say the time allowed to cross the road from the High Street car park side to Park Place apartments car park isn’t sufficient – especially for the elderly and parents with young children. Councillor Gleeson raised the issue at last week’s Killarney Municipal District meeting asking that it be addressed urgently. “Some people are finding it difficult to cross at this junction and have relocated to the library crossing,” Cllr Gleeson told the Killarney Advertiser this week. “It doesn’t allow people to cross sufficiently. People say they feel in danger crossing due to the time constraint.”

DANGER: Michael Gleeson (South Kerry Independent Alliance Councillor for Killarney), Kathleen Gleeson and Andrew O’Sullivan are concerned that there isn’t enough time to cross at the pedestrian crossing at the top of High St.

However, when the pedestrian crossing was observed many times by the Killarney Advertiser just after noon yesterday (Thursday) there seemed to be an inconsistency with the crossing time allowed. Using a stopwatch, and crossing beside a mother with young children, one walk-

ing beside her, the greenman lasted for just five seconds. Further consecutive timings resulted in just over 20 seconds, and finally, just before leaving the last timing was again just five seconds – meaning there could be a fault there. Councillor Gleeson wants the crossing

to be looked at urgently saying that this particular area of the town is set to get busier with new road planned nearby. “KCC are in negotiations with three owners with a view to acquiring the properties necessary to allow for development of a new road from Bohorreengowan to High Street. “That will bring more traffic onto this junction, so it’s imperative that all pedestrian crossings be reviewed to ensure safety for all those trying to cross at all controlled pedestrian crossings at the top of High Street car park.” In their reply, Kerry County Council said that the Council designed and built the junction and pedestrian crossing in accordance with Transport Infrastructure Ireland (TII) standards. ‘The Council has again inspected and reviewed the crossing. When designed and built the crossing allowed for universal access across the junction. The Council is now proposing to trial a Pedestrian Countdown Timer in order to assist pedestrians across the junction.

Lewis Junction safety works planned for 2020 Upgraded works at the Lewis Road Junction which will include a new roundabout - are to go ahead – but it’ll take a least another year. Serious accidents and loss of life has occurred on the busy road, which sees over 18,500 vehicles pass through every day. It has a current speed limit of 100kph and is deemed one of the most dangerous roads in Kerry. Just this Monday afternoon, a motorist was caught up in an accident as the driver tried to exit the Upper Lewis Road out onto the busy bypass. According to Kerry County Council the Part 8 Public Notice for the proposed works at this location will be published this month. On completion of this process, the land acquisition process for the necessary lands will be commenced and it is hoped to have the lands acquired and to have the Construct Contract procured by the end of 2019 with the works being carried out in 2020. Cllr Niall Kelleher welcomed the news that the works will be going ahead next year although he says people are anxious to see it done sooner. Cllr Kelleher and Suzanne Dennehy, whose sister died on the road a number of years ago, gathered 5,000 signatures, which were handed to Minister’s office. “I’d like to see it done in the morning but land has to be acquired – it’s a large scale project,” Cllr Kelleher told the Killarney Advertiser. “The speed limit review is gone back to Transport Infrastructure Ireland (TII).

Cllr Niall Kelleher welcomes news that safety works at the Lewis Road Junction will go ahead next year.

“The speed limit will be reduced where the proposed roundabout will be back to Cleeney roundabout. “The underpass will be a welcome addition to pedestrians and cyclists to allow them cross safely from one side to the other especially Legion and Celtic residents in the area. “I can very much understand the frustration by the gen-

eral public asking why can’t it be done straight away, but it’s with the TII and at the last stages – so hopefully in the next month or two. “While the TII have committed to it I’m calling on Minister Ross and Griffin that once we’ve our job done that the funds are made available as soon as possible. Every day is critical.”

Organ Donation

“Organ donation works, I’m living proof” Third time lucky kidney recipient urges people to carry a donor card BY MICHELLE CREAN A Milltown man who has undergone three kidney transplants is planning to give something back and also create awareness about the importance of organ donation. Colm Clifford (42), and his supportive wife Nikki, who both work in Astellas in Killorglin which ironically produces medication for transplant patients, have set up a Monthly Renal Support Group to help patients and their families from diagnosis right through their journey. The kind couple also plan to promote organ donation in schools and are asking them to hold a non-uniform day across Kerry in all primary and secondary schools. Colm was born with only one functioning kidney, and as a child went into kidney failure. In December 1988, aged just 11, he had to go on dialysis four times a day. In March 1990, aged 13, he had his first transplant. “I was born with two kidneys but only one was functioning,” Colm told the Killarney Advertiser. “My first transplant, the kidney was taken out after two days as it didn’t function.” In November 1990, he underwent his second transplant which was successful for 22 years. However, Colm and Nikki’s world came crashing down in 2012 when the newly married couple learned that his kidney was failing again. In the beginning he was put on dialysis four times a day at home and then later for an hour-and-a-half three times a week in hospital until his third transplant in early March 2017. Now he says his health is very good but he and Nikki are keen to help others going through the same experience as them. Nikki explained that it was a long and lonely road and at times felt was hard for others to understand fully. “You don’t live a life – you’re existing,” Nikki, who is Organ Donor Awareness Co-Ordinator with the Kerry

Colm Clifford, has undergone three kidney transplants. He and his wife Nikki, who have set up a support group and are planning a big fundraiser, are appealing to the public to think about organ donation.

branch of Irish Kidney Association, said. “It’s quite lonely, it’s hard. I did struggle a bit with the emotional side and there was no support network in Kerry so we set one up in December.” Also, she added that a new house has been recently purchased in Killarney, near the Killarney Oaks Hotel, by the Kerry branch of the Irish Kidney Association with help from Ring of Kerry funding. “It’s all gutted out at the moment and money from the schools non-uniform day will go towards this, so the

money will stay in Kerry.” Colm added that the monthly Renal Support Group meeting takes place the second Thursday of every month at 7.30pm in The Kidney House, 11 Castlelawn Drive in Killerisk. “Organ donation works, I’m living proof. Hopefully it won’t come to anyone’s door but I’d urge people to carry a card and more importantly speak to your next of kin about Organ Donation.” For more information contact Colm on 0861999169.

TOWNTALK New Chamber President plans to tackle town’s parking problems said he plans to build on the very good relationship the Chamber has with the officials and elected members of Killarney Municipal District Council and Kerry County Council, to work together on the big issues such as the town’s parking problem, congestion during the tourist season and creating greater access. He said he is also looking forward to continuing the partnership with organisations like Tidy Towns, the Killarney Mountain Meitheal and the National Parks and Wildlife Service, and he is particularly anxious to see the potential of the magnificent asset that is Killarney House and Gardens maximised. “The bottom line is that I am very keen to hear the views of everybody in Killarney in terms of what the town needs and what the Chamber can do to ensure it remains the best town in the country to live in and to visit,” Paul said. He added Paul O’Neill would be a hard act to follow as he was a tremendous ambassador for the town during his two-year term. “My priority is to continue to build on the great work that has been done by Chamber down through the years and to work closely with Team Killarney,” he said.

Always active in Chamber, Paul has served on all the organisation’s festival committees and he is currently Chairperson of the Killarney St Patrick’s Festival. A long-serving member and former

President of Killarney Rotary Club, he is the current Chairman of Killarney Celtic FC – the reigning Kerry league and cup champions – and he also serves on the board of management at Gaelscoil Faithleann in Killarney.

The new President of Killarney Chamber of Tourism and Commerce hopes to bring a new and fresh perspective to the role – and also tackle the town’s parking problems. Paul Sherry, manager of the Killarney Outlet Centre, who this week took over from outgoing president Paul O’Neill, said many of his outstanding predecessors have been directly involved in tourism and he is acutely aware that the industry is key in Killarney. Although a retailer by profession and not a business owner, he still sees himself as working in tourism, and pledges to represent all sectors with equal enthusiasm. The new president said he wants to continue to represent the entire business community, the industrial and manufacturing sector, hospitality, retail and other commercial interests, and he hopes everybody will work together to create an even better Killarney. “I want to make the Chamber as inclusive as it can be, and one of my main targets during my term is to increase membership. We are already a very strong and driven organisation and by growing further we can only get stronger,” he said. Outlining his priorities for the role, Paul

Full review of Christmas events planned

A very comprehensive review of Christmas in Killarney 2018 - understood to be one of the most successful festive seasons in the town for many years - is being undertaken by Killarney Chamber of Tourism and Commerce. An open business meeting to examine and reflect on how the town fared in the lead-up to, during and immediately after Christmas has been planned for the Killarney Avenue Hotel on Wednesday next, January 23, with a 6.15pm meeting time for a 6.30pm

start. Killarney was particularly busy during Christmas, thanks mainly to the top class programme of events lined up for the Christmas in Killarney Festival, major retail promotions and festive-themed community events with revellers flocking to the town to avail of seasonal offers in local hotels and guesthouses and the hugely popular Dine in Killarney promotion. Next Wednesday night’s meeting will reflect on the season in significant detail with a number of busi-

Kerry company wins lucrative smart-metre contract

Abbeydorney company TLI has been awarded the contract to roll out Electric Ireland’s scheme to replace every electric metre with a smart metre. Over the next four years, 2.3 million metres will be replaced with modern smart-metre boxes containing sensors which measure and record a building’s total electrical energy con-

sumption. The meters will then transmit the data back to base automatically meaning estimated electricity bills and manual meter reads by ESB technicians may soon be a thing of the past. It’s expected that up to 250,000 homes will have their old metres replaced in 2019 with the remainder of premises to be completed by 2023.

A community project is near its funding target after receiving €59,000 yesterday (Thursday). Killarney Micro Track, also known as the South and East Kerry Community Rural Track project, which will be located at St. Brendan’s College, is now at 75 percent of its €400,000 target. News of the funding was announced by Kerry Fine Gael TD and Minister of State for Tourism and Sport, Brendan Griffin from his Department’s Sports Capital Programme. The funding was warmly welcomed by project coordinator Jerry Griffin, who says they now just need to fundraise the final 25 percent to reach their goal. The site for the track was donated by St Brendan’s Trust on a leased basis, and is centrally located on the grounds of St Brendan’s College. It will benefit the 2,000 students in schools nearby, athletic clubs, paralympic athletes, Special Olympics athletes and community groups as well. Full planning for the project has been granted for the track, but now they’re hoping for public support to get the project over the line, Jerry explained to the Killarney Advertiser. “I welcome the efforts from Minister Griffin, Cllr John Sheahan and Cllr Niall Kelleher and other elected reps for working with us to secure the funding.” The project received €110,000 in LEAD-

ER funding in April last year, €20,000 from Kerry County Council, and a huge chunk of the money was raised through community fundraising including the Killarney 10 Mile, AIB Schools Fitness Challenge, GoFundMe, a World’s Best Record with The Most Minions in One Place, and Wine and Art nights in Killarney over a number of years. Now, as they look towards appointing a contractor and setting a date for the sod turning, he says they are ready to relaunch their fundraising drive in the coming weeks. “This project has gone on for four to five years – we didn’t give up,” he said. “To raise the final 25 percent we need the community to row in with us to assist us in the final fundraising drive. We’re also looking for donations from private individuals and business people.” Minister Griffin also announced funding for Kenmare Community School who will receive €36,000 towards a compact athletics training facility, while in Faha/Listry, a new all-weather pitch at Faha National School will receive €42,800. “I am really happy for the recipients of this funding,” Minister Griffin said. “I wish all of our funding recipients well and look forward to seeing these projects coming to fruition in the time ahead.”

Community Funding

Local groups to receive funding A local councillor has welcomed funding for voluntary groups under the Community Enhancement Programme 2019. Councillor Michael Gleeson said the allocation of funds will enhance the lives of those involved in the local groups. €9,000 was allocated to Barradubh Men’s Shed for roof repairs and fire and safety compliance and equipment. Kilcummin Looking Good is to receive €5,000 for the provision of a yellow box at entrance to the nursing home. Killarney Looking Good will also receive

a total of €16,948 to improve lighting and accessibilty in the town centre and to provide benches on Killarney Travel Pathway. Rathmore Graveyard committee is to receive €1,000 for the provision of age friendly parking, Black Valley Group is allocated €1,000 for a history and genealogy project, while Killarney Men’s Shed is allocated €1,000 for the purchase of a laptop and mobile phone. “These projects by voluntary groups will greatly enrich the lives of locals and visitors,” he said.

Views On The News

Columnist Anne Lucey gives her take on happenings in Killarney, Kerry and beyond

The UK parliament has reverted to its old imperial manner

Theresa May.

Boris Johnson.

raging, Angela Merkel and EU leaders were banging the tin drum of easing Turkey’s entry into the EU. Tin drum, tin ear! More incredibly on June 1, now just three weeks before the British referendum, their Europe seemed ready to heed calls to “liberalise” visa applications so close to 80 million Turks could, if they wanted, move to Europe. It was an own goal by the European leaders. And it was too good an opportunity for UKIP and the Brexiteers to let slip. The prospect of millions of Turks heading, not just to Germany where there are strong ties since World War I, but to the UK, because that is where they also would have headed if they were to move anywhere, was seized upon in the leave campaign. In a hard fought campaign, this was a no-brainer. They didn’t need to do anything. There was no poster necessary.

Even at the time when I heard about easing the visas for the Turks, I thought, “that’s it, the Brits will leave”. I was right. On June 23, 2016, 51.9 percent of those who voted - voted to leave. And while the finger is pointed at UKIP, and Michael Gove and the Brexiteers, is anyone pointing at the arrogance and insensitivity of other European political leaders in all of this? That the EU Commission and the European leaders did not know that immigration was the key issue in Brexit? That the main political leaders could not have tread more lightly? That the MEPs etc., could not have shut them up? I hear so much now about the political stupidity of the Brits - but I hear nothing about the political stupidity, and frankly blind arrogance, of the European leaders during a critical period with a vote to leave of one of its largest members underway.

It’s not just meat and dairy we need to worry about We have too many cows, eat too much meat, drink too much milk - the herd number nationally has rocketed. In just four years there’s been an increase of around 400,000 cows. What are we going to do with them now the world is turning against meat and dairy? It is not just milk we are drinking, alas. I sat in Killarney Court this week and weanlings let loose on Killarney, the party capital of the southwest, showed their colours. Alcohol, a substance which changes the brain, was involved in the majority of the cases before the court either in public order, assault or drink driving. The cases included: - A young man who called Gardai “pigs” and started grunting like a pig, prompting the judge to say if he grunted he was the true pig. - A young woman who was so drunk she took part in a large “brawl” in Killarney town centre and took off her high heel shoe to threaten others. - Three Tralee people with long standing drink problems and dozens of previous convictions who used a

house in New Street as a squat; all three on free legal aid and three solicitors involved. - A big strap of a man who picked on and assaulted a very young looking 17 year-old while standing in a chip queue - completely unprovoked. Drink was the issue. - A pub caught for the third time serving out of hours, this time in the morning, under pressure because other establishments were opening early, it was stated. - Solicitors for drink drivers arguing for hours on technicalities. We may count cows - but the cost of alcohol in our society is truly not quantified. It’s not just meat and milk we need to change our attitude towards, it strikes me. Anyone trying to take a more wary attitude towards wine and other stuff, and maybe even struggling to keep a dry January, call into Killarney District Court the first and third Tuesdays of the month… and see the real story behind the glossy image of alcohol in the party capital.

On the other hand the UK parliament has reverted to its old imperial manner and is treating the EU like a colony. Its approach to the EU, and especially Ireland and the border, is towards a rather obstreperous little country! It is quite simply bizarre, but also a failure of politics. And we here would want to cool it with our fixation on the ‘backstop’ - there is no room now for hard line positions. A border is entirely manageable, if we have the imagination and the will. As for the political disaster in head-teacher Mrs May’s showdowns in Westminster in recent days, I still think given the democratic decision of the British people, Boris Johnson should have been put in charge from the off. Why? Because once the tune is underway, play it through. He has enough bluster and arrogance and colonial attitude to the EU gusto and bombast to carry it through and march on. It’s what the Brits have done best throughout history. Put a brave face on things and get behind a leader. It is a monarchy at the end of the day. So hail King Boris! Anyone who has learned the piano knows that you do not abandon the tune when you miss the note - you play on to the end. The Brits slipped in Brexit. It was understandable given the prospect of unstoppable migration, but what is not understandable, is their halting approach since. They have wasted two-and-a-half years. They should have played on! They can still do so. So get on with it! And for us, there is always the commonwealth.

V

Things are at such a pass now you would wonder how the English ruled us for 700 years. What kind of donkeys were we to be led by such asses! The truth is they did so with collusion. The fool proof imperial method always, whether it was India or Ireland, was to court the princes, the chieftains, and the powerful, and then the cosmhuinter, meaning followers or poor people, would follow. Well, I only hope in a few years from now, we won’t be asking similar questions of ourselves about the EU. Nobody mentions the war of course: What really pushed the Brits - really the English and Welsh - over the line to vote to leave the EU was the European leaders themselves. We talk about ‘backstop’, but we need to step back, back pedal a bit. In October 2015, the prospect of easing Turkey’s entry into the EU in return for which Turkey would hold onto their three million Syrian and Middle East migrants was put on the table first by German Chancellor Angela Merkel. Thousands per day were coming into Greece. Angela had invited one million into Germany. It was overgenerous. The migrant crisis was threatening to overwhelm and split Europe and there was a growing resistance in Germany, Hungary, Poland, and even the Nordic countries, to the prospect of people from a completely different culture, language and background, arriving daily in such huge numbers. Not that anyone was allowed say that quite so directly, of course. In March 2016, and crucially, in May 2016 with the Brexit referendum campaign

Kerry Baby investigation to continue in Cahersiveen We have nine gardai in Cahersiveen assigned fulltime to a case, that, next April will be 35 years-old, and that few want revisited. The whole circus is going on with a year now. There are door-to-door enquiries in Valentia, a place that has no links, tidally, to the baby’s body washed up or left on the White Strand outside Cahersiveen. Nothing of significance has been found in the full year of enquiry involving hundreds of interviews and DNA samples that are in the double digits, Supt Flor Murphy said this week. However, the Garda investigation will continue for the foreseeable future, saying staff numbers, three of whom which are assigned from Dublin, and six from the Kerry Division, will remain in place, he said. But can we really afford the luxury of so many Gardai and so much money being spent on solving a cold case while resources are so stretched everywhere? And, there is this: if there is a murderer around Cahersiveen, he or she has been mightily quiet for almost 40 years.

Criticism

Councillor strongly criticises distribution of Community Support Fund A Kerry County Councillor has strongly criticised the distribution of the 2019 Community Support Fund. Councillor Michael Cahill, who raised the matter at a recent meeting of Kerry County Council, said the South and West Kerry Municipal District area was being treated unfairly and that this was not acceptable. The South and West Kerry Municipal District is to receive €55,000 under the 2019 Community Support Fund allocation. This compares to €84,000 for the Killarney Municipal District, €88,000 for the Tralee Municipal District and €53,000 for the Listowel Municipal District. The Fianna Fail Councillor stated that the South and West Kerry Municipal District was not alone the largest Electoral Area in the county covering three peninsulas, but was also the largest Electoral Area in the country. Councillor Cahill said the area had four large towns; Killorglin, Cahersiveen, Kenmare and Dingle, along with a large number of villages. “If each of the four main towns were to receive €10,000 each that would mean there would be a total of €15,000 for all the villages and community groups in the region,” he said. Cahill also pointed out that contributions to Tidy Town Committees, St. Patrick’s Day Committees and Christmas Lights initiatives would have to be taken out of the total allocation in the first instance. He requested that CEO Moira Murrell and the Senior Management Team examine the allocation in the interest of fairness and as a matter of priority.

NEWS VOLUNTEERS WANTED Help Killarney National Park Mountain Meitheal fight against Rhododendron which is invading Killarney National Park Meet at Dinis Carpark Sunday mornings at 9am and Tuesday mornings at 9.30am

18.01.19 Volunteers

More volunteers sought to fight invasive plant The fight against the invasive and destructive Rhododendron plant in Killarney National Park continues, and a local proactive group are calling for more volunteers to come on board. Killarney National Park Mountain Meitheal, will this Sunday and Tuesday morning, travel by boat to Gleana to work on the eradication of the weed in the woods there. And, although they got a good response in their recent call out for volunteers, they say they still need further bodies to help wipe out the ponticum once and for all. The voluntary work outings take place on Sunday mornings at 9am and at Tuesday mornings at 9.30am, meeting at Dinis Carpark; all equipment will be provided but proper footwear is advisable for anybody willing to participate, explained Johnny McGuire, Killarney National Parks Mountain Meitheal Volunteer Coordinator. “We would urge everyone to be aware of the blight of the Rhododendron and to see at first hand for themselves the benefits of its removal,” he said. So far this year, over 50 volunteers have given over their time on Sunday and Tuesday mornings for this good cause, he added. “This is our national park, which is of enormous so-

cial, recreational, spiritual, life-enhancing gift to all of us fortunate to be living, working and playing in this most beautiful environment and our voluntary group allows everyone to participate in the eradication of this invasive species. “This voluntary work is assisting the dedicated hard-working staff in our national park who go above and beyond the call of duty in coordinating the eradication of the ponticum. “The positive mental and physical benefits in participating in this work are enormous, so please think of volunteering as a New Year’s Resolution.”

Club Fair

Pick a club any club – at this Sunday’s Kerry Clubs Fair Over 50 local clubs have signed up to a new free awareness event, the Kerry Clubs Fair, to show the public what they’re all about. Organised by Killarney Lions Club, in association with Killarney Credit Union, the Kerry Clubs Fair is free and open to the public. The aim is to give adults in Kerry an easy way to find out about activities they can be part of in the county. The event will feature clubs and organisations that people might like to participate in or volunteer with, be it for fun, recreation or just to be involved. “This is a new event that will give people a chance to meet clubs and other organisations that are active in the community and hopefully find something they are interested in,” Ronan Doyle, Killarney Lions Club President, said. “It could be that someone wants to try a new activity, or is new to the area, or wants to give back to their community through volunteering – whatever the reason, it will be a great event, and everyone is welcome to come along on the day.” Clubs that will be part of the event include: Men’s Shed, Killarney Silverbacks (walking), First Responders, Killarney Community Games, Toastmasters, Girl Guides, Lions Club, Tidy Towns, Killarney Camera Group, Southwest Counselling, The Rotary Club, Grace Baptist Church, Tralee Art Club, Ring of Kerry Cycle, Laune Mountaineering Club, Killarney Drama Circle, Kerry Archaeological & Historical Society, KDYS, Killarney Tennis Club, Kerry Scouts, Killarney Camogie Club, Kerry Stars Special Olympics, Workmen’s Rowing Club, Order of Malta, Macra Na Feirme, Killarney Mountain Meitheal, Irish Country-

National Awards Programme launched for Local Enterprises A national awards programme for local enterprises was launched in Killarney on Monday. South Kerry Development Partnership (SKDP) and North East and West Kerry Development (NEWKD) jointly launched the LDC Enterprise Awards 2019, which is organised by the Irish Local Development Network (ILDN) to recognise the contribution of local enterprises to their regions around the country. They’re calling for entries from local businesses from enterprises across Kerry that have been set up with the support of the Back to Work Enterprise Allowance programme which is operated through the local development companies in conjunction with the Department of Social Protection. The awards programme will be held in Tralee on March 21. Enterprise Officer with SKDP, Joanne Griffin, said that the event is aimed at

businesses set up under the scheme during both 2017 and 2018. “All such enterprises can enter the event and a number will be chosen to go forward to represent Kerry at the National Final,” Joanne said. “It is an excellent opportunity for such businesses to potentially get recognition for their efforts at a national level.” SKDP CEO Noel Spillane added that this programme is an excellent opportunity to recognise the vision and work of these small enterprises which are so crucial to the economies of rural areas such as Kerry. NEWKD CEO Eamon O’Reilly noted that Kerry enterprises were very successful at national level in the previous competition, and he is hopeful that the county will again enjoy such success. “I would encourage all eligible businesses to fill out the application form and take part in the event as it also is an excellent opportunity to network with

Competition continues to spread Donal’s message Entries are now open for the sixth annual Live Life Film Competition in memory of Donal Walsh. The national competition, which was officially launched on Thursday last at the Kerry College of Further Education, is open to groups and individuals of all ages and abilities who are invited to submit a two minute film clip on a theme linked to positive thinking/living. This year’s theme is ‘It All Works Out!’ The competition aims to continue to spread Donal’s positive message as he began an anti-suicide conversation before he lost his cancer battle in 2013. The fully-sponsored competition culminates in the highly acclaimed annual awards ceremony attended by over 800 people with celebrity guests and bands. This year only the primary school awards will be presented at the Live Life Awards Ceremony. A new element is being introduced for the secondary school and adult entries as the shortlisted and winning entries will be screened on the big cinema screens at a separate award ceremony. The competition is fully sponsored and supported by local businesses and organisations, and the event manager for the competition, Mary Lucey, Principal of Kerry College of Further Education (KCFE) stated that without this ongoing sponsorship and support, the competition would not con-

The audience of about 350 people were treated to an array of talent from start to finish, with each team pushing the bar higher as they performed their show. “The talent from everyone who performed on the night was extraordinary,” Ed McSweeney, Kerry Macra PRO, said. “The audience were entertained with energetic dance routines, hilarious comedy, beautiful singing and some very original shows.” He added that the judges on the night had a very tough job deciding who to give the awards of ‘Best Male Performance’, ‘Best Female Performance’,

‘Best Act’ and ‘Best Producer’ to. In both the Best Male and Best Female categories, there were three nominations in each, with John Martin Carroll from Causeway Macra getting one of the three nominations in the Best Male, and Brid O’Shea from Killarney Macra getting one of the three nominations in the Best Female category. Both Pa Lucid from Causeway Macra and Emma Cronin from Killarney Macra received nominations in the Best Producer category. Unfortunately there wasn’t any luck in winning any of these categories. Then it was down to the main business of announcing the two teams going forward to the National FBD Capers final in Waterford. “With each team having a great chance of going forward, the results were announced,” he said. “As Causeway Macra and Clonakilty Macra’s names were called out the cheers and roars of excitement and delight from both teams and the crowd lifted the roof and the celebrations began.”

Brave Rathmore ladies raise over €7,000 for Motor Neurone disease

Five ladies Kay O’Keeffe, Nora O’Connor, Grainne Lynch and Sheila Casey along with family and friends, presented a cheque for €7,211 to Christy Lehane and Nora Murphy of Kerry Friends of Motor Neurone at Cahill’s Bar Rathmore, the total proceeds of the coffee morning in Rathmore and an abseil in Croke Park.

their hospitality in providing Cahill’s bar for the event.” The people of Rathmore/Gneeveguilla area are all too familiar with Motor Neurone Disease, she added.

Career guidance counsellor Niamh Dwyer

“They remember the recent passing of Bridie O’Neill, while the late Paul Casey, Patrick Carmody and Patsy Hickey, all passed away from this awful disease some time back.”

Christy Lehane Chairman of Kerry Friends of Motor Neurone thanked the families and friends of these people for all they have done for Motor Neurone Disease by raising huge amounts of money since Kerry Friends were founded in 2011. “This challenge was not for the faint-hearted, but as the girls said it was for a great cause as 86 percent of the Irish Motor Neurone Disease budget is reliant on fundraising,” Christy said. “Sadly, there is still no cure for Motor Neurone Disease. “But we are happy in the knowledge that the monies raised go towards the provision of specialist nursing care for Motor Neurone patients and to afford them the comfort and dignity of spending their end of life in their own homes. We do not know when or who will need the service next, but the one thing we do know is that the numbers of people diagnosed with MND in recent times is on the increase.”

Kerry Friends of Motor Neurone were overwhelmed to receive a huge cheque of over €7,000 thanks to the generous – and brave – work of Rathmore locals. Not only did they raise plenty of funds from a coffee morning in Cahill’s Bar last October – but organiser Shirley Nagle and her friends Kay O’Keeffe, Nora O’Connor, Grainne Lynch and Sheila Casey went one step further and plunged 100ft off the top of the Hogan Stand in Croke Park for an abseiling challenge for the Irish Motor Neurone Disease Association. The coffee morning was an absolute success and the ladies concerned were overwhelmed at the large turnout not to mention all the contributions they received on the day and in the days that followed. “The generosity of the people was something to behold,” said Shirley. “A huge thanks to the people who supplied all the food on the day. Thanks to Austin Murphy and Bernie Cahill for

Advice clinics for applicants ahead of HEAR & DARE deadline

HEAR and DARE organise national advice clinics annually to give applicants and parents the opportunity to drop in to meet with a member of either or both teams to discuss the applications. The Kerry Advice Clinic takes place on Tuesday, January 22, in the Rose Hotel, Tralee, from 5-8pm. The Higher Education Access Route (HEAR) is a college and university scheme which offers places on reduced points and extra college support to school leavers from socio-economically disadvantaged backgrounds who are resident in the Republic of Ireland. HEAR has been set up by a number of colleges and universities as evidence shows that long-term poverty can have a negative effect on how well a student does at school and whether they go on to college. HEAR applicants must meet a range of financial, social and cultural indicators to be considered for a reduced points place and extra college support. Disability Access Route to Education (DARE) is a third level alternative admissions scheme for school-leavers whose disabilities have had a negative impact on their second level education. DARE offers reduced points places to school leavers who, as a result of having a disability, have experienced additional educational challenges in second level education. DARE considers a broad range of disability categories including physical or sensory disability, neurological conditions, development co-ordination disorder, mental health conditions, autistic spectrum disorder, attention deficit disorder, speech and language disorder, significant ongoing illness and specific learning difficulty. Applicants applying for both schemes must: • Apply online to CAO by 5.15pm on February 1, 2019. • No later than 5.15pm on March 1, 2019, indicate in your CAO application that you wish to apply for the HEAR or DARE scheme (or both if eligible) and fully and correctly complete all elements of the online HEAR or DARE application form. Once you have completed the relevant application form(s) you will get a checklist which tells you which documents you need to supply. • Post supporting documents to arrive in CAO no later than 5.15pm on April 1, 2019. • Full details of both schemes can be found on www.accesscollege.ie. •

Terence says farewell to the International Hotel

One third of the International Hotel’s dream team has this week said a final farewell as he retires after almost 25 years dedicated service. It was an emotional evening on Thursday for Terence Mulcahy, who was joined by his family, wife Ailish and their son Darren, and colleagues at the hotel to mark the special occasion. Unfortunately his daughter Lorna, who is studying for her Leaving Cert at Presentation Convent, wasn’t able to make it. Terence has a long history with the hotel, starting out as maintenance man, working his way up to marketing manager, eventually taking up the reins as General Manager. He officially finished up on January 10 with a celebration that evening, organised by his family and colleagues. “It was a lovely night with Terence, Ailish and their son Darren,” Tracy Coyne, daughter of Sean and Frankie, and Managing Director of Hotel Balor Teoranta, the company that owns the hotel, said. “All the Coyne family were there together with the senior and long standing staff at the International Hotel to wish Terence well in his retirement. “Terence worked with us for almost 25 years working his way from maintenance man, to marketing manager to General Manager and having no hotel experience in his background brought fresh eyes to the business at a time when Sean and Frankie Coyne had decided to make a significant investment to the building, which was in need of some loving tender care. “With Frankie on the interior design, Sean on the money and Terence on the execution, they were the dream team, and together they brought the Grand Old Lady that was the International Hotel back to life to make it a focal point of Killarney town centre where locals and visitors have the fondest memories.” She added that Terence, who turns 58 this month, will be very much missed by the team at the International, but he will surely get his handicap down to scratch in the coming years! “He’ll be in and out over the next few weeks tidying up our winter work programme and will always be on hand for ongoing coffees and consults!”

How to care for orchids Following the article about houseplants I received many specific, but recurring queries. I thought this week I would address some of them. In the last number of years, orchids have increased in popularity. The colours are amazing and they have come down in price dramatically. They are in such demand that growers are now even artificially colouring them. The bright blues, oranges and unnatural pinks are just that, unnatural. Usually the actual true colour of the flower is white, and will revert to white, unless colourant is added to the water. Orchids are relatively easy to grow, they just need certain conditions to thrive. In nature, most are aerial parasitic plants, (phaleanopsis), that is, they grow as parasites on trees, and so a dappled shade and high humidity suits them best. They have roots which hang down from the tree and draw moisture from the air. This is why orchids are best potted in a special mixture of bark and soil in a clear pot which lets light through. Set them on a tray of pebbles which is filled with water, so that there is constant humidity. A steady warm temperature is important, as they grow in equatorial regions, where there is minimal temperature fluctuation. When the flower has finished, cut the stem to the last node, and often it will flower again. Orchids which have long strap like leaves – Cymbidium - are generally terrestrial varieties, and can be potted in a light houseplant compost. To encourage flowering, they need to have a cool spell in the autumn, so place it outside in the late summer, out of direct sunlight. Brown tips at the end of leaves is often due to sporadic watering. Water your plants when the top of the compost feels dry, saturating plants on an ongoing basis is detrimental to them, as their roots may rot. Brown tips can also be due to

draughts, of which most plants are intolerant, direct sunlight scorching them, or physical damage due to people brushing off them. Fertilise every second week during the growing season, and once a month during the winter. Be aware that overfeeding is worse for plants than underfeeding! For shady, darker rooms, ferns and palms are recommended. For bright sunny rooms I recommend coloured foliage plants such as Croton, or flowering plants such as African violets and orchids. Do not move plants around too often, if they are thriving, leave them where they are! • Evening gardening classes are resuming, from 7.30pm to 9.30pm, Thursday nights in Killarney Community College. The course is suited to those beginning a new garden, or enthusiasts who would like to know more! All aspects of gardening are covered. For details please contact the community college during school hours.

– if so – one crisp company has come up with the perfect Valentine’s Day combination.

Duke of Edinburgh involved in car crash near Sandringham Estate

Tyrells have launched aphrodisiac crisps that are set to get consumers ‘pulses racing’ by combining two simple ingredients - sweet honey and the fiery spice chilli. According to Tyrrells these two ingre-

97 year-old Prince Philip was involved in a car crash yesterday afternoon (Thursday). The crash happened while the Duke of Edinburgh was driving close to the Sandringham Estate and his Range Rover overturned on the side of the road. Although another passenger was in the vehicle at the time of the crash, Buckingham Palace have said that

dients can have a powerful effect on the body, with the honey “tinkering with hormone levels” and the chilli triggering nerve endings on the tongue, releasing endorphins and increasing heart rate.

Cohen admits he rigged online polls Trump’s former American attorney Michael Cohen has admitted yesterday (Thursday) that he rigged voting polls. Cohen has said that in 2015 he paid between $12,000 and $13,000 to John Gauger, the owner of RedFinch Solutions LLC, for activities related to Trump’s campaign, including “trying unsuccessfully to manipulate two online polls in Mr Trump’s favour” and creating a Twitter account called “@WomenForCohen” that “praised (Cohen’s) looks and character, and promoted his appearances and statements boosting” Trump’s candidacy.

Never fails to entertain

Wall Street Journal reports Cohen paid John Gauger to set up the “WomenForCohen” account to promote him as a ‘pit bull’ and ‘sex symbol’.

Prince Philip was not injured in the minor collision. “The Duke of Edinburgh was involved in a road traffic accident with another vehicle on Thursday afternoon,” a palace spokesperson said. “The Duke was not injured. The accident took place close to the Sandringham Estate. Local police attended the scene.”

New initiative to highlight impact of parental alcohol misuse on children to be launched

Alcohol Action Ireland have launched an initiative to raise awareness of the experience of growing up with parental alcohol misuse in Ireland. The initiative, called Silent Voices, was officially launched yesterday (Thursday), at the Royal College of Physicians Ireland (RCPI) in Dublin 2. The BBC’s Africa Editor, Fergal Keane, who has written and spoken about his experience of growing up in a household with parental alcohol misuse, provided the keynote address at the launch. The driving force behind Alcohol Action Ireland’s Silent Voices initiative are three women who experienced parental alcohol misuse as children: Carol Fawsitt, Marion Rackard and Barbara Whelan. Silent Voices aims to end the silence of the experience of growing up with parental alcohol misuse in Ireland. The objectives of Silent Voices are to: · Promote an understanding of the adverse impacts of parental alcohol misuse on the lives of children, including children who are

now adults. · Work to enhance supports to those who have lived, or are living, with parental alcohol misuse. “Silent Voices is about giving a voice to the lived experience of the child and adult child growing up with parental alcohol misuse, to start the conversation about this hidden harm, to help not only those affected by growing up with parental alcohol misuse but also the next generations, to put this childhood trauma on everyone’s radar,” Carol Fawsitt, Chair of Alcohol Action Ireland, said. “Silent Voices is not about pointing fingers, blaming or judging parents who engage in alcohol misuse. We need to stop the cycle of damage repeating. Parents and carers of children may not be aware of the impact of their drinking behaviours on the child. Parents and carers may themselves have grown up with parental alcohol misuse in their families of origin and may never have been able to access help or support. A parent’s own unresolved trauma is at risk of being played out with their child.”

Kerry Live Register down 11.4 percent in the last year The number of people signing on the Live Register in Kerry has dropped by 11.4 percent in the last year, a Fine Gael Senator has said. Unemployment has fallen steadily from a peak of 16 percent in 2012 to 5.3 percent in December 2018. Ireland is a stable, competitive, secure economy that is open for business. “It is great to see that the number of people signing on the Live Register in Kerry has declined by 11.4 percent in 2018,” Senator Coghlan said. “Since Fine Gael’s Action Plan for Jobs was launched in February 2012, the Kerry Live Register has decreased locally by 52.3 percent. This is 8995 people who are back making a living, to the benefit of themselves, their families and the local communities in which they live. “This good news for Kerry comes as the CSO revealed that the Live Register has fallen below 200,000 nationally, the lowest since 2008. This figure represents a year on year decrease of 15.5 percent. “Locally we’ve seen declines in the

live register right across the county. “We will continue this success into the future because we are investing in our talented people, in our drive for innovation and in the future of our infrastructure. “Jobs are also growing in rural Ireland, with over three out of every five jobs created outside Dublin, since the Government was formed in 2016. And these are not just in the commuter belt, with over five out of every 10 jobs created outside of Dublin, Kildare, Meath and Wicklow. “We are also investing in our future as a society, organised and resourced for the challenges and opportunities ahead. Project Ireland 2040 aims to ensure that Ireland is ready for the future with a society that has sustainable and balanced growth, nurtures talent, serves the welfare of our people, and offers opportunity for all. “We are moving towards full employment and we will ensure that all parts of Ireland can share in our prosperity and economic growth, including here in Kerry.”

Bill planned to protect National Anthem Fianna Fáil Senator Mark Daly plans to reintroduce the National Anthem (Protection of Copyright and Related Rights) (Amendment) Bill, in Seanad Éireann on January 22, the first Seanad sitting of 2019. The Bill, which seeks to give official recognition to the anthem and protect it from use for advertising purposes, was first introduced in 2016 but lapsed with the dissolution of the Dáil and Seanad. “In 2017 and 2018 the Seanad Public Consultation Committee convened a public consultation on the National Anthem,” Senator Daly explained. “The report produced following the consultation found very favourable public support for the anthem and that protocols in relation to its use should be introduced. “As report rapporteur I was happy to see the public engagement and the desire to protect the anthem as much as possible from any use in commercial advertising. The National Anthem belongs to all Irish people, it is a key symbol of our identity yet it lacks protection. “I first introduced this Bill in 2014 due to the lapse in copyright. I was contacted by constituents, unhappy with the idea of the anthem being used for advertising purposes. Following this, I worked with members of all Parties and the Seanad Public Consultation Committee and we published this report in June 2018. “One of the findings through our work

on this report was that there is a need to formally adopt the anthem in the Irish language as this has never been done by the State. However, it was also brought to our attention that there was no official version of the anthem that could be performed by members of the Deaf Community through Irish Sign Language. The Deaf Community themselves have undergone a very thorough consultative process and have composed the official Irish Sign Language National Anthem which is provided for in this Bill. 2019 marks the 110th anniversary of the anthem being written by Peadar Kearney, he added. “I think it is very fitting, as we continue with the Government’s Decade of Commemorations, that we move forward with this very simple Bill. It will protect our National Anthem from being used in advertising and give official recognition to the Sign Language and Irish Language versions,” Senator Daly concluded.

Aer Lingus launches new logo

Children’s Hospital to cost a staggering €1.4bn There was outrage this week when it was revealed that it will cost €1.4bn to build the new National Children’s Hospital. The National Paediatric Hospital Development Board appeared before the Oireachtas Health Committee in relation to the soaring cost. The hospital will be located at the St James’s Hospital site in Dublin. The committee heard that the cost is €450m higher than the figure of €983m approved by the Government in 2017. The overspend lies between €1bn

and €1.5bn - costing twice than anywhere in the world. The overspend on the hospital, which will have 470 inpatient beds, will have a knock-on effect on all capital projects in the health service. Issues mentioned at the meeting which drove the cost of the project up include 5,000km of cables being needed. The development board had got the price of cables but did not know early on how many would be needed, Mr Costello explained.

Aer Lingus got a whole new look this week as the Irish company released their new shamrock logo. And it seems the new look has been welcomed as more modern and fresh - as it’s been more than two decades since the airline’s last refresh. Over 50 shamrock designs were considered for the airline, which is continuing its expansion into the North Atlantic market. The new look will also be carried on their website and app. New uniforms will also be unveiled later in the year. CEO, Sean Doyle said this week that he’s delighted to present their brand refresh, which comes 20 years after Aer Lingus last invested in new brand livery, and reflects their position as a modern airline. “We have evolved from an Irish airline that flies internationally to an international airline that is proud to be Irish,” he said. “In addition to the new brand identity and livery, we will also unveil a new uniform lat-

er this year and will welcome new A321LRs aircraft to our growing fleet. The re-imagining of the Aer Lingus brand reflects Ireland in 2019. A society that is open, progressive, liberal, outward-looking and dynamic, an Ireland that is proudly European and has become the destination of choice for inward investment. The refreshed brand reflects an airline that connects people living in Montreal to Marseilles; in Berlin to Boston; as well as those living in Cork to Croatia.”

Ross Golf Course suits all types of golfers Ross Golf Course is situated within walking distance of Killarney town centre. It prides itself as being one of the best 9 hole golf courses in Ireland. With its magnificent backdrop of the McGillycuddy Reeks mountain range, this parkland course has become a firm favourite on the golfing circuit. Killarney Racecourse is a hive of activity during the summer racing festivals that take place every year. Prior to the establishment of Ross Golf Course, the racecourse lay dormant for 48 weeks of the year. The opening of Ross Golf Course breathed new life into a spectacularly beautiful part of Killarney town. The course was opened in 1995 and has grown from strength to strength with vibrant gents, ladies and youth memberships. In addition to its magnificent setting, Ross is a great course in its own right, offering a good mix of pars and variety through the course. With the option of doing a 9 or full 18 hole round, the course suits all types of golfers from hardened veterans to beginners. For those golfers new to the golfing scene, lessons are also available with Mark Heinmann, the highly acclaimed on site pro. The course is all year round with the

exception of race days at the Killarney Racecourse. In contrast to the pounding of the hooves and the packed grandstands, peace and solitude reign at Ross for most of the year. Naturally, the

course is influenced by the racetrack but it is not defined by it. The holes are situated both inside and outside the track rails and this variety adds a nice balance as you complete your round.

You can find full details about the course, green fees, membership and other information on the Ross Golf Course website.

A golfer’s paradise in Killarney Killarney has often been described as a golfer’s paradise and Killarney Golf & Fishing Club, located in the surroundings of unrivalled lake and mountain scenery, is certainly one of the jewels of Irish golf. Year-on-year, the club has made huge strides forward in terms of course presentation, condition, consistency and playability. The most recent headline project at the club was the re-design of Killeen’s 1st green complex. The project was finished last year and opened for play on May 1. The complex has been re-modelled to now encompass a protective and eye-catching wall on the lake shore side as well as a larger run-off area with natural swales and mounding which mimic its famous mountainous environs. The changes made really raise the bar from a first impressions standpoint, and warrant the golfer’s full attention for this iconic opening hole. The club offers reduced green fee rates for Killeen and Mahony’s Point to GUI/ILGU members all year round. Societies are wel-

come at the club, with green fees available from just €35. In addition, the club runs a series of Open Days throughout the year, with the first one of the season scheduled to take place on March 18 (Bank Holiday Monday). Local husband and wife team, David and Geraldine McCarthy, provide the catering at the club. In addition to the clubhouse bar menu, daily specials are available, and the team can cater for groups of all sizes and budgets. NEWS MAGAZINE Nissan

Nissan unveils luxurious IMs Concept at Detroit Auto Show Nissan debuted its newest concept model, the IMs Concept, in Detroit this week, representing the company’s pure electric future with impressive range, full drive autonomy and an innovative new seating arrangement. Beneath the sleek and futuristic light-up body of the EV is a high-performance AWD system powered by a pair of electric motors. These dual electric motors produce 360kW and 800Nm of torque, while the 115-kWh battery provides a range up to 610km. The cockpit features a variety of “driver-assistance technology and multi-level information displays”, allowing the driver to remain fully connected while watching the road. In autonomous mode, drivers can choose to relax in the “Premier Seat”, the centre position in the vehicle’s 2 + 1 + 2 seating architecture.

2019 Toyota Supra revealed in full

Japanese car-maker finally shows fans what they’ve been waiting for. Toyota lifted the lid on the fifth-generation Supra at the Detroit Motor Show this week, a car it claims ushers in a new level of everyday performance while staying true to the nameplate’s rich heritage. While much is already known about the Supra, it can finally be confirmed the newcomer is powered by a 3.0-litre turbocharged straight-six petrol good for 250kW and 500Nm – paired to an eight-speed automatic transmission. The six-pot uses twin-scroll turbocharging, direct fuel injection and continuously variable valve control to deliver what Toyota claims is “segment-leading torque performance from very low revs”. Officially, the A90 Supra can notch 100km/h from rest in 4.3 seconds, thanks in part to a launch control function. Reinforcing the car’s sporty brief is a ‘Sport’ mode, which adjusts the engine sound and response, gearbox shift pattern, damping, steering and active differential accordingly. The stability control software also offers a specific ‘Track’ setting.

New LEAF e-Plus, Nissan joins desirable 200-Mile Club

The big news announced at the 2019 Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas is that the Leaf Plus increases its battery capacity 55 percent to 62kWh, and its EPA range on a single charge is now approximately 50 percent more than the 40kWh Leaf at 385 kilometres. This puts the Leaf in the 200+ mile club. The Leaf Plus will be hitting markets worldwide in the spring of 2019 and builds on the recent release of the

second-generation 40-kilowatt-hour (kWh) Leaf introduced last year that will continue to be available. It is possible that the Leaf Plus EPA mileage rating might be lowballing its actual range. The 40kWh Leaf has an EPA range of 151 miles, but owners routinely report achieving ranges of 165 to 175 miles. If this hidden range carries over to the Leaf Plus, potential ranges of 260 miles are possible. Along with more range, the Leaf Plus gets a more

powerful 214 horsepower (hp, or 160 kW) electric motor with 250-pounds-feet (340 Nm) of torque vs. 147 hp (110 kW) and 236-pounds-feet (320 Nm) in the 40kWh version. With this added power, we can expect the Leaf Plus to hit mid-six-second 0-60 times. With a bigger battery comes more demands for better fast charging. The Leaf Plus continues with the CHAdeMO system, but its power has increased from 50kW to 70kW (100-kW peak).

Drama

Dóchas Drama returns to the stage with powerful words Words are powerful - and the latest offering by Dóchas Drama is set to inspire - as they’re planning a series of plays in Killarney in the coming weeks. With the theme ‘The Letters’ all manner of emotions will be brought to the stage at the Killarney Avenue Hotel on Tuesday January 29, Wednesday January 30, Thursday January 31 and Friday February 1, at 8pm nightly. The creative group set the overall theme last summer, asking writers to submit “never before read or produced” new scripts with a promise to stage the most suitable 10. However, such was the feedback that chosing just 10 proved difficult, Liz Ryan from Dóchas Drama explained. “Based on the overall theme of ‘The Letter’ and approximately 10 minutes long, writers were free to explore emotions, situations and relationships. And they did,” she said. “We were overwhelmed by the number, variety and overall standard of the scripts sent to us. “Then came the reading and selection process which was the most difficult, but finally the selection was narrowed down to the 11 short plays you will see.” Writers were free to explore emotions,

situations and relationships, Liz added. “Suitability depended on content, entertainment value, variety and casting possibilities.” Handwritten letters and typed letters, signed letters and anonymous letters, overdue, long-awaited and unexpected letters, promising and threatening letters and the importance of the letters D and W are all explored in this selection. There’ll be plenty of confusion, disillusion, optimism, pessimism, imagination and reality explored on stage. “You will definitely be stimulated and never bored. You may even be inspired to write something yourself.” She said that a number of the writers will attend, some of them will appear on stage and many of them you will know. “Some have written before, some have won writing awards and many have written for the first time. “This initiative is designed to encourage writers and to provide a platform for their efforts. “We know you will be amazed at the variety and standard of the scripts. And you will be delighted to see many new actors on stage – again some for the first time.” Doors open 7.30pm. Admission is €10 and tickets can be bought at the door.

Adam Moynihan The Killarney Derby has thrown up some real classics over the past few years (league finals aside) so anticipation is high ahead of the latest instalment on Sunday. League leaders Celtic will host near neighbours Athletic at Celtic Park and anything other than a full-blooded, high-intensity encounter would be a major surprise. Derbies are always tough to call but this season things are even more unpredictable as both teams are markedly different from the ones who duked it out for league and cup silverware between 2016 and 2018. In their quest for continued domestic and national success, Celtic have enlisted the services of a number of players, perhaps most notably Stevie O’Mahony and Seán Moloney from Tralee. Both are expected to play on Sunday. It’s difficult to guess how they’ll line out besides that and there are certainly no clues forthcoming from within the camp; Celtic’s management chose not to release a player for interview ahead of the big game. One thing we know for sure is that tough-tackling full-back Chris O’Leary and creative midfielder Matt Keane will be unavailable for selection as they will both be in action for Kilcummin in the All-Ireland Intermediate semi-final, which takes place in the Gaelic

Blues skipper Cillian O’Regan says a win on Sunday would be “massive”.

Grounds in Limerick at 2pm. On the injury front, key players John McDonagh and Gary Keane have been out of action in recent weeks and may not be ready to feature. The player turnover has been even more noticeable in the blue half of Killarney. In a recent game against Mitchels Avenue, just three of the starting 11 were regulars last season (Seán Cournane, Cillian O’Regan and Will Courtney). Older heads like Paudie O’Connor and Éanna Kavanagh have stepped away from the set-up, keeper Brian O’Connor has relocated to Limerick, Shane Lynch is recovering from a cruciate injury, and others are focussing on football. Manager Stuart Templeman has been forced to inject a lot of youth into the team and you’d have to

say that he has managed a difficult situation quite well. Some of the club’s young stars have impressed in their debut seasons and Athletic are currently joint second with Castleisland on 17 points. As always, first and second will qualify for the league final at the end of the campaign. Athletic may be a team in transition but captain Cillian O’Regan says the aim remains the same: to finish in the top two and reclaim the title the club won for the first time in 2017. “At the start of the season, a few of us came together and put down some goals for the year and trying to be up there challenging for a spot in the league final was number one our list” O’Regan said. “It has been difficult at times because some of our younger guys are still learning, but we’re playing decent ball and things are looking good. “Tadhg Doolan is playing great, Eoin Moynihan is super and we had Owen Benson for a couple games and he has been fantastic as well. Darren Mulcahy has been around for the last couple of years but he has really stepped up for us this season as well.” Celtic are currently well out in front but the Athletic skipper knows that if they get there, anything can happen in a final “In a once off game you’d never know who might win,” he said. “We’re just aiming for second at the moment. Celtic are still a bit ahead but we’ll take each game as it comes. A win on Sunday would be massive for us.” Athletic will undoubtedly be underdogs against the runaway leaders but as we’ve seen in the past, anything can happen in the Killarney Derby.

Doolans divided as Kilcummin face Two Mile House All-Ireland Intermediate Semi-Final

Kilcummin v Two Mile House Sunday at 2pm | (Gaelic Grounds, Limerick)

Eamonn Fitzgerald Kerry champions Kilcummin travel to Limerick on Sunday to play Two Mile House in the All-Ireland Intermediate semi-final and it is sure to be a day of mixed emotions for the Doolan family. Caomhán Doolan is the son of Kilcummin native Micheál Doolan and the nephew of club stalwart Billy, but on Sunday he will line out in the gold and green of Two Mile House. Micheál played for Kilcummin for many years but he later transferred to the Kildare club when he took up a teaching position in Newbridge. The younger Doolan normally operates in midfield but he was deployed in defence for the decider against Shamrocks in the Leinster Final and he put in a Man of the Match performance to help his side to a 1-8 to 0-10 win. But his work for the day wasn’t done there. Doolan stuck around for the trophy presentation

in Tullamore before being whisked away to the University of Limerick (111km away) where he was due to sit his Linear Algebra exam. Speaking to Ger McNally of the Kildare Nationalist, Doolan explained the day’s events. “I was just thrown straight into a car and booted it straight down and I made it about five minutes late,” he said. “I did the exam in my football gear. I didn’t have time to change so my socks were still sopping wet.”

Helicopter

The original plan was to transport Doolan via helicopter but adverse weather conditions prevented it from taking off. “There was talk of it beforehand and before the game Niall (Browne) and Tadhg (O’Neill) told me that it was all good to go. I ran into the dressing room after the game and it was only then that Niall told me that the helicopter couldn’t take off so I was

just thrown into the car and got there as quickly as possible. “It was one of those exams where it didn’t take much understanding, it was stuff you learned and it was just putting that on to the page. In the car on the way down I looked over some stuff and got focused again. I only have exams at Christmas this year, I don’t have summer exams, because I am going working from January to August.” The third year Financial Maths student said he was pleased with how the exam went. Later that day, he got a bus back to Kildare where he re-joined his teammates for the celebrations.

Kilcummin

Best of luck to Kilcummin on Sunday, led by their captain and goalkeeper Brendan Kealy. They have been training over the Christmas period and had a useful challenge game recently against the Kerry U20 side. Kevin McCarthy is still injured and will not be playing. Philip Casey has a hamstring problem but he hopes to line out as Kilcummin bid for a place in the All-Ireland Final. They had several close calls in the Kerry campaign but they came through them all. Their opposition on Sunday has two of the Kildare senior team in their ranks.

Minor changes confirmed for 2019 O’Donoghue Cup Adam Moynihan

Any hopes that local players had of seeing a new kind of O’Donoghue Cup in 2019 were dashed last week when board members and delegates at the East Kerry Annual Convention confirmed only a few minor changes to the current league and championship structure. In fairness to the Board, they didn’t receive much direction from the clubs; only three clubs submitted motions (Fossa, Gneeveguilla and Rathmore) and just four of the 13 motions pertained to the O’Donoghue Cup. And I have to admit that despite the undoubted upswell in player support for change, I’m not surprised the clubs didn’t pipe up and ask for something different. As I said multiple times before Christmas, and as I was told multiple times by club officials, nothing will happen unless players come together, decide what they want, and put it down in writing. That didn’t happen, so the clubs didn’t know what the players wanted, so they couldn’t tell the Board, so the Board were under no obligation to change anything.

the Preliminary Round (one fixture) and Round 1 games played in July and August, “if dates are available”. This motion, which was tabled by the East Kerry CCC, also included a line about playing midweek games but that idea did not end up getting the green light. Introducing midweek fixtures was one of the key recommendations from the players I spoke to so its exclusion at the last minute is disappointing to say the least. It was also decided that the four senior clubs (Rathmore, Kilcummin, Legion and Dr Crokes) will now automatically receive byes into the quarter-finals of the O’Donoghue Cup. (Rathmore had tabled a similar motion stating that senior clubs should be seeded. Fossa had suggested an alternative system for seeding the top three teams that would have given priority to clubs who qualify for Munster first and foremost, then to the reigning O’Donoghue Cup champions, and then to the runners-up from the previous year if necessary. If those criteria still only produced two teams, a random team who had a player on the Kerry senior team would also have been seeded.)

Potential problems

The new measures are likely to impact Spa and Glenflesk more than most Complaining down the pub is one thing, and as players we’re all well capable of that, but affecting real change takes action. One thing I noticed in my conversations with local players before Christmas is that while everyone felt the same way about the Super League and playing the O’Donoghue Cup into December, when it came down to actually doing something, i.e. putting something in writing, they were reluctant to place their own clubs in the firing line. The feeling was, “yeah, we want it to be sorted out, but we want to focus on football at the moment” or “we had a bad year so we don’t want to be complaining” or “it didn’t affect us this year”. Unfortunately teams seem to be adopting a very short-sighted approach to a long-term problem. But look, fellas want to protect their own house too, which I understand.

Changes

As it turned out, a couple of positive (if minor) steps were actually taken by the Board to try and get their competitions played off in a timelier fashion. One of the measures passed at the convention will see, “where possible”,

If the first round games do actually get played in July and August, any teams with Kerry players will have to make do without. They won’t be too happy about playing championship without their best player(s), though looking at the current Kerry camp it may only affect three East Kerry clubs in 2019. Between the timing of the first two rounds and the seeding of the top teams, the Board are obviously handing an advantage to the senior clubs, which isn’t ideal. But look at it this way: there has been a level playing field for the past 15 years yet only two teams have actually gone and won it. When you group 13 teams based purely on their geographical location, there’s no reason to assume the competition will be bal-

anced and it’s not necessarily the job of the Board to even things up either. At the moment you realistically have seven junior clubs who have very little chance of reaching the final regardless of where they’re inserted into the competition. At the other end of the scale you have the four senior clubs who have all reached finals in recent times and all could realistically win it. These new measures are likely to impact the two intermediate clubs, Spa and Glenflesk, more than most. Both have good, young teams and both could quite easily beat one of the senior clubs on their day, but they now have to start at least one round earlier than Crokes, Legion, Kilcummin and Rathmore. This could be a significant hindrance depending on the draw. And there’s nothing to say that Spa and Glenflesk won’t have players in with Kerry either this year or in the years to come.

The Crokes Rule

Dr Crokes and Firies effectively pulled out of the O’Donoghue Cup in 2017 when they were given fixtures the weekend before their respective Munster and county finals. Losing the tournament’s most successful team was a major blow to the East Kerry Board so in 2018 they implemented a new law that guaranteed teams a free weekend the week before a club final. That didn’t last long. That particular recommendation was deleted at last week’s convention as it was contrary to a pre-existing County Board ruling, so if Crokes, or any other team for that matter, reach a Munster final in 2019, they could have an O’Donoghue Cup fixture the week before. Wouldn’t that be interesting?

Will the changes work?

It’s not what the players wanted but I think there was at least some effort made to streamline the O’Donoghue Cup this year, and the Board deserve credit for that. On paper the changes have the potential to make a difference but I must admit, I have

some doubts. For instance, if Spa are playing Fossa in August and East Kerry are playing championship the following week, will the O’Donoghue Cup game go ahead the week before? I suppose we’ll have to wait and see. Note: The East Kerry Board were not available for comment. They have not replied to any requests for comments since our first O’Donoghue Cup article in November. Glenflesk’s Darragh Roche is tackled by Philip Casey of Kilcummin. Glenflesk will be one of the nine unseeded teams in this year’s East Kerry Championship. Pic: Séamus Healy.

The Killarney RFC U16s who defeated Clonmel in Barraduff.

U16s beat Clonmel in pulsating cup clash U16 Munster Cup (Round 2) Killarney 15-5 Clonmel (Barraduff) Killarney secured their passage to the third round of the Munster Cup on Saturday but they were pushed all the way by a spirited Clonmel side. With just two minutes on the clock, Killarney jumper John McCarthy gathered in the line-out and, following a controlled maul, Brendy O’Sullivan broke from the base and burst over for a try. But Clonmel were not there to simply make up numbers. The visitors displayed their own set-piece prowess shortly afterwards when they superbly marshalled a line-out maul 30 yards and over the try line to level matters up. Killarney regained the initiative when a Donnchadh Grealy cross-kick was superbly chased down by James Kennelly. The ball broke to supporting John McCarthy who secured possession and touched down to make it 10-5. The action was intense throughout. Clonmel enjoyed an obvious advantage at scrum time and their counter-rucking at the breakdown yielded tons of possession. Counteracting this, Killarney’s pacey, skilful backline looked threatening with ball in hand, and their defence was teak tough with Ozdenis Koyun and Dan Twomey in particular tackling strongly. Killarney struck again 10 minutes before half-time. Cleverly taking play away from the large opposing pack, a quick penalty tap was flashed wide. Ozdenis Koyun, James Kennelly and full back Liam Randles all attacked with menace down the right wing before Tomás Clifford superbly navigated between the onrushing cover and the sideline to touch down.

Clonmel did not buckle, however, and probed hard to find a weak link through their impressive forwards. Killarney got a lucky break just before halftime when Clonmel failed to find touch from an attacking penalty. However, the pendulum swung back just on half-time when John McCarthy got a yellow card for an illegal tackle. All involved needed the half-time interval. As expected, Clonmel made use of their numerical advantage and laid siege to the Killarney line for the opening period of the second half. With no way though the frontline cover they deployed more varied ploys, cross-kicking and moving the ball along the back line. They came close on several occasions but the resistance was impressive. James Kennelly took ball and man on one occasion to prevent a certain try. Eventually Killarney managed to exit their own half and to their great credit kept the visitors defending for the remainder of the game. On several occasions Killarney threatened the line but facing superior defensive opposition to what they had previously encountered resulted in wrong options being taken. Dan Twomey, Mikey Moriarty, Odeniz Koyun and Tomás Clifford all came close but neither team managed a score in the half and it ended as it was at half-time: 15 to 5 to the home team. Without doubt the front row of Rob Nealon, Cengiz Koyun and the returning Bailey O’Sullivan were heroic on the day, withstanding a fierce onslaught from the opposing front row. Lock Darren Cronin grew impressively into the game, tackling, running with the ball and proving very effective in the lineout. Alongside him the ever-valiant Mikey Moriarty caught the eye with his tackling and support play. This was the day for our experienced back row to show their mettle and Pádraig Talbot was Trojan throughout, up first in most tackles and driving opponents back. John McCarthy impresses more each week with his line-out jumping and he was hugely influential in the second half. Brendy O’Sullivan

relished the physicality of the challenge and also finished strongly. Scrum half Peter Walsh was immense, bravely tackling and leading the attack. Out half Donnchadh Grealy kicked superbly from hand, making big territorial gains. Odeniz Koyun put in a Man of the Match performance with bone-crunching tackles and offensive bursts while Tomás Clifford was always a threat with his explosive runs. Wingers James Kennelly and Dan Twomey again contributed enormously; their power in the tackle and skill on the ball impressed. Full back Liam Randles was a ball of energy and counter-attacked at every opportunity. Shane McAllister, Jack Kenneally, Calem Sheehan and Cormac Rowe provided the reinforcements. A word of thanks to Peter and Eamon and members of the senior panel who prepared the splendid Barraduff pitch. Thanks also to all the family members who attended and supported the lads today and provided refreshments. Killarney next take on Clonakilty away on the 26th and stand on top of the group with two consecutive victories.

Mikey Moriarty offloads to the onrushing Tomás Clifford.

MOTORSPORT BRIEFS

Mick Schumacher close to Ferrari F1 junior deal Mick Schumacher, the son of seven-time Formula 1 world champion Michael, is close to confirming a deal to join Ferrari’s young driver programme. The 2018 European Formula 3 champion has courted the interest of F1’s biggest teams since clinching his maiden car-racing title last season. Schumacher’s father won five of his world championships with Ferrari in a dominant spell from 2000 to 2004.

Gronholm back to WRC with a Toyota Two-time World Rally champion Marcus Gronholm will return to the series to drive a Toyota Yaris WRC at next month’s Rally Sweden. The car, privately entered by Gronholm, will be run by Toyota Gazoo Racing, but not as part of the factory effort. Gronholm is the joint most successful driver in the history of Sweden’s WRC round alongside Stig Blomqvist with five wins apiece.

Killarney cyclists claim top team prize Killarney Cycling Club proved their mettle at Ireland’s largest cyclocross event on Sunday last as they claimed the top team prize in the Elite Men’s Race. With close to 50 riders in the field in Fota, Cork, the Killarney team, which consisted of current Munster champion Richard Maes, former national criterium champion Páidí O’Brien and Matt Slattery, grabbed the team prize on the back of three excellent performances. Richard finished 7th, Páidí was 9th and Matt came in 11th. There were over 400 entries in total at the event. The M40 race had the biggest field with 70 riders and Killarney’s best result came from Patrick Clifford. Riding for Strata3 Velorevolution, Clifford came 14th, which helped earn his team 2nd place. His teammates Anthony Doyle got 2nd and Trevor Woods came 8th. Patrick was also 2nd in the Mun-

ster League and Championship this season in M40. John Crowley raced in the M50 against nearly 30 other riders and he managed an impressive 7th place finish. John won the Munster Championship this year in Over 50s. Meanwhile, Eoghan Pattwell (Kanturk/O’Leary Stone) raced in the junior category and he came in 8th on the day. “Cyclocross in Ireland is going from strength to strength,” Patrick Clifford explained. “It’s seen as a very safe sport as it’s raced on grass and mud, with obstacles added where riders have to dismount their bikes and carry them over or up steps/ inclines. Competitors do laps of a course so it’s a real spectator sport as well. It can be compared to cross country running as you get to see the riders on different parts of the course. It’s suitable for all age groups and at Fota there were races held for 6-year-olds all the way to 60.”

Fantasy

Defending World Rally champion Sebastien Ogier has urged Citroen to find consistency as he begins the pursuit of a seventh title in Monte Carlo later this month. Citroen took just one win in 2018, through Sebastien Loeb, and has continued to update its initially difficult C3 WRC. The Frenchman admitted that while the car showed pace in places, the C3 WRC currently lacks consistency.

Toyota has plan if Alonso wants Dakar Rally attempt Toyota has been planning for the eventuality that two-time Formula 1 champion Fernando Alonso will decide to contest the Dakar Rally. Alonso - who won the Le Mans 24 Hours with Toyota last year - is expected to test a Dakar-spec Gazoo Racing South Africa Hilux within the next month, after contesting the Daytona 24 Hours with Wayne Taylor Racing.
