Eve Kelliher takes a look at the news that’s been getting Killarney and Kerry talking
Killarney Residents Under Siege
HOW infuriating is it when a stranger blocks you from parking outside your house for an indefinite period? Or almost worse, how would you feel if you were often unable to use your car to leave your home and go about your business because quite simply your exit was blocked on a regular basis? And all simply because of other motorists’ selfish attitude to parking? That’s the situation residents in Killarney’s Lower New Street/Cathedral Place face daily. A reader living in the area got in touch with me this week after reading Killarney Advertiser’s series on traffic, parking and congestion problems in our town. Thoughtless parking on New Street is seriously compromising residents’ quality of life – and safety. At the end of the street, Cathedral Place is a magnet for selfish, irresponsible drivers.
Under the heavenly shadow of St Mary’s Cathedral, motorists make life hellish for the locals Under the heavenly shadow of St Mary’s Cathedral, they make life hellish for the locals by parking wherever they please when attending funerals, weddings, Communion and Confirmation ceremonies,
Pres To Welcome New Classrooms NOT only will it be ushering in new students this school year but St Brigid’s Presentation Secondary School will also be getting set to welcome two brand-new additions to its facilities in the near future. As a past pupil, I can imagine the excitement at enjoying class in a stateof-the-art new science lab and brandnew art room, both of which are earmarked for the Pres.
The additions, announced by Minister for Education and Skills Richard Bruton under the additional accommodation programme, were also welcomed by Killarney senator Paul Coghlan and Kerry minister Brendan Griffin. No details are given of the amount approved by the school building unit, as the publication of the amount of the grant aid sanctioned could prejudice the tendering process for the school.
as well as during school drop-off times. “People seem to think it’s OK to abandon their cars in yellow box junctions or park on double yellow lines, or double park with no regard whatsoever for residents who may need to enter or exit their property,” this resident told me. Not only that, but those living in the Old Presbytery Apartments are often in effect under siege or blocked out of the underground car park there as people selfishly park in the yellow box at its entrance. “The council and gardaí were informed and I’m glad to report that today two large poles have been installed on either side of the entrance to the underground car park at Cathedral Place with a clear ‘no parking’ sign on both poles,” added our reader. A clearway should surely operate from the
pedestrian crossing near O’Shea’s Funeral Home to the entrance to the Bishop’s House, she suggested, adding it should also include the entrance to St Brigid’s Presentation Secondary School and entrance to Cathedral Place car park, as well as the entrance to the Bishop’s Path and Old Presbytery Apartments and other residences on that side. “Several cars park outside the Cathedral on a keep clear zone and in the grounds of the Cathedral when no ceremonies are taking place. The cars are left there for hours,” she added. Meanwhile the Cathedral car park fills up rapidly every morning as it is used by people working locally. “Why can’t the traffic wardens issue tickets at this end of town?” begged our reader. “Or why can’t there be a Garda presence at school pickup time?”
Burger King Appeals Refusal To Extend Opening Hours
IT’S something that people often comment on – Burger King is smack bang in the middle of town so how come it is not open to late-night revellers as other fastfood outlets are? This week it emerged Burger King has appealed a decision not to allow it to extend its opening hours at its Killarney outlet. OKR Group had applied to Kerry County Council to open until 3.30am on Fridays, Saturdays and Sundays and until 2am on Mondays for 12 weekends at its College
Street premises. The weekends include Valentine’s and St Patrick’s weekends, Easter, Puck Fair, New Year’s and the Ring of Kerry Cycle weekend. However, the local authority refused permission to extend the opening hours as it would lead to large congregations of people in the area. OKR has now appealed this to An Bord Pleanála; a decision is due by December 4.

Slimming World Killarney Awarded Silver Award SLIMMING WORLD KILLARNEY has been awarded a silver award for outstanding weight losses and service to members for the month of June. Slimming World consultant Sorcha Domican said: “I’m thrilled with the award but it’s the group itself and the members’ support that’s really the best thing! Our members are so warm and welcoming to new members and give fantastic tips and hints. “The group is vital to weight loss as support is key – even just knowing someone else has been in the same position as you can put a member at ease.” In June, Sorcha took over the group that meets on Tuesdays in The Brehon in Killarney and is now taking over the group that meets on Thursdays in the Killarney Plaza Hotel also. “I’m looking forward to helping even more people achieve their weight loss goals,” she said. Sorcha herself lost four stone with Slimming World after having her second baby. The busy mom says the plan is suitable for everyone. “It’s just healthy eating – no gimmicks!” she said. “We help people learn to eat healthily but in a way that the food you love is not off the table – you can still have all your favourites burgers and chips, fry ups, curries and pizza.” The group meets every Tuesday in The Brehon Hotel at 9.30am, 11.30am, 5.30pm and 7.30pm, and every Thursday in the Killarney Plaza at 9.30am, 11.30am, 5.30pm and 7.30pm. KILLARNEY ADVERTISER’S business development manager Kieran Healy joined forces with newly minted Rose escort Jackie Healy-Rae Junior this week to get a taste of what lies ahead for Heritage Week. Our mobile journalist Aishling O’Hanlon captured their antics on camera down at

Joy And Relief Fill The Classrooms ALMOST 2,000 students across the county breathed sighs of relief on Wednesday as the agonising wait for their Leaving Certificate results was over. There was a feeling of joy and positivity in the corridors of the three Killarney second-level schools on Wednesday morning. The Pres girls gathered at St Brigid’s Secondary School from 9am to await their results from school principal Róisín Moore. “There was a great atmosphere in the school,” said Ms Moore. “We are delighted with the results. We had a terrific group of girls with 12% achieving over 500 points and 60% of our Leaving Certificate Applied class receiving distinctions. The girls can be very proud of their achievements.” The school principal added: “We wish the girls all the very best on Monday when third-level places will be offered and as they make important choices about their future. It is also important to keep in mind that academic results are not a measure of an individual and we hope that for all our students that their time in St Brigid’s has helped them develop into a well-rounded individual ready to make a positive contribution to society.” The 80 Leaving Cert students of Killar-
ney Community College were also rewarded with grades described by principal Stella Loughnane as “excellent”. “Results in both Leaving Certificate and Leaving Cert Applied were very strong with distinctions achieved in Leaving Cert Applied and in the Leaving Certificate Higher grade 1s achieved in Mathematics, English, History, and Russian,” said Ms Loughnane. Mathematics results were particularly strong at the college, with success rates well above the national norms. Some 60 Leaving Cert students at St Brendan’s College were congratulated by their delighted principal Sean Coffey. “It has been a special year on many fronts for this group as they achieved excellent results while also enriching the culture of the school,” said Mr Coffey. He added: “Whether a student’s hopes lie in engineering, law, the sciences or in a PLC or apprenticeship our boys are well prepared for the next step.” • Turn to page 14 for career guidance counsellor Billy Ryle’s advice and also to see students’ own verdict on their results, and see our writers’ take on the Leaving Cert on page 16

Killarney Leaving Cert Students Give Their Verdict On Results THE wait is over for Leaving Cert exam candidates and when I caught up with students at Killarney schools on Wednesday morning there was a feeling of overall relief. Aisling O’Mahony, Killarney, from St Brigid’s Presentation Secondary School, pictured top left, said: “I wasn’t stressed over my Leaving Certificate. I’m hoping to study business and law in UCC.” Another St Brigid’s student, Aoife Courtney, Killarney, pictured in photo above, second from left, with her mother Margaret,
described her Leaving Certificate experience as “bearable”. “I’m hoping to study Commerce in UCC,” she said. Abigail Graham, Fossa, and Sarah Finnan, Glenflesk, pictured in photo on left above, collected their results at Killarney Community College. They described the Leaving Cert experience as “hard”, adding: “It was such a relief today getting our results.” Killarney Community College students Jordyn Tuohy and Michelle O’Sullivan, in photo on right, described their exam experience as “wonderful”.

very seriously, but I remember that morning as I walked in the door, he smiled at me and said congratulations and that’s when I knew that I had done well and I could breathe a sigh of relief. Then there was my mother. I remember running out the door, screaming and telling her that I’d passed my exams and I had gotten more points than I thought. Her facial expression completely changed from a nervous one to a smile from ear to ear. The one thing I do regret is taking my school days for granted. When I was in school, I couldn’t wait to go to college, get away from my parents and have as many nights out as I wanted. How wrong was I?! College was great but I missed my family, my friends, my own bed and familiar surroundings. It was only when I was almost finished the first year of my degree that I realised school days really are the best days of your life!

Busy Month For Rescue Team
Kerry Mountain Rescue Team volunteers performing the rescue on Mangerton Mountain on Sunday with the help of the Irish Coast Guard helicopter.
IN WHAT marked the fifth accident on Kerry’s mountains in recent weeks, an injured climber was plucked to safety by helicopter on Tuesday. The female hillwalker sustained an arm injury after falling on the eastern side of the MacGillycuddy Reeks. Kerry Mountain Rescue Team treated her at the scene, near Lough Cummeenapeasta, before she was airlifted to hospital by Irish Coast Guard helicopter Rescue 115.
The rescue team dealt with three callouts in the first half of the month. “Each callout has required evacuation of the casualty to hospital for treatment. On each occasion the Irish Coast Guard helicopter has been on scene to assist with evacuation,” said Allan Wallace of Kerry Mountain Rescue Team. An injured climber was airlifted to hospital from the Gap of Dunloe on August 4 thanks to the combined efforts of the National Ambulance Service, Rescue 115 and Kerry Mountain Rescue.

Meanwhile, days later, on Wednesday, August 9, Kerry Mountain Rescue Team was tasked to the assistance of a female hillwalker. The injured climber was airlifted from near the summit of Strickeen by the Irish Coast Guard helicopter. Last Sunday evening, the rescue tam was called to the assistance of a female walker on Mangerton Mountain. “The lady became ill while descending the mountain. She was winched to the Irish Coast Helicopter and evacuated to hospital,” added Mr Wallace.
Injuries Following Killarney Crashes EIGHT people were hospitalised following a crash at Fossa on Sunday. The incident occurred at 12 midday in the Lackabane area, on the N71 road, when a head-on collision took place between two vehicles. Eight people were involved between both cars and all were taken to University Hospital Kerry. The following day, a collision occurred on the Tralee Road between a car and a motorcycle. Gardaí and ambulances attended the scene of the accident which took place shortly after 5pm at Coolgarrive, Killarney, less than a mile outside town. The motorcyclist was taken to University Hospital Kerry with what are believed to be serious fractures.

The Great Escape Invited to a wedding without a plus one? You might just find yourself in need of rescuing, says Eve Kelliher THE thud when that fat, glossy wedding invitation lands on your doormat will fill you with either dread or delight. You open it and – yup – the bride or groom has failed to include the all-important “and guest” on the allotted line. For those who face being asked solo to these glittering affairs, the fact that the summer wedding season has drawn to a close will elicit a sigh of relief that would blow that bridal bouquet from here to Sneem. Several years ago friends and I would swap horror stories of being invited as a lone ranger to these do’s. “Ah but the bride is only thinking of her numbers when she asked you on your own,” was one justification from a well-meaning but misguided would-be peacemaker.
We were circled at the time around a very upset pal who summed it up when she snapped back, in tears: “Feck her and feck her numbers!” Diplomacy worthy of Kofi Annan was deployed in this instance to ensure my friend could bring a plus one. But what kind of ego does it take to feel your guest will have a good time and be comfortable asked to make smalltalk with strangers on either side of the table? She or he is in effect the odd one out at a table of four or five couples. Or better again, what about being seated at the kiddie table as a kind of freelance, freewheeling nanny? A nanny who is paying dearly for the privilege in terms of time and effort as she vainly protects
her fascinator from spills? No matter what anyone says, unless you have been consulted as to whether you would prefer to attend on your own, it feels like a massive slap in the face to be invited to a wedding without a plus one. People who have been on the receiving end of this faux pas tend to have a sixth sense when it comes to looking out for one another. The above tearful friend would motor to my own rescue later that same year as I attended a wedding solo. Well before the clock struck midnight, she happened to be driving by the venue and texted asking if I fancied a means of escape. High heels or no high heels, I couldn’t clamber into that getaway car fast enough.

Last chance to save tax and invest in your future Planning for your financial future will give you peace of mind today. This week, our Expert Retirement Planning Adviser, Denis Murphy, Premier Financial Services, discusses the options for Individuals to invest in their pension and save tax on their contributions .
Opportunity to REDUCE your 2016 Income Tax Bill
Individuals who both pay and file their tax returns through the Revenue On-line Service (ROS) have until Friday 10th November 2017 to pay a pension contribution and elect to backdate the income tax relief against the 2016 tax year. Those who do not qualify for the ROS extension must do this by 31st October 2017.
There is no option to defer. If you do not take this opportunity, you will not get another chance to reduce your 2016 income tax liability.
How Much Can an Individual Contribute to a Personal Pension, PRSA, PRSA AVC or AVC?
For contributions paid in 2017 and set against 2016 earnings, an earnings cap of €115,000 applies for tax relief purposes to total contributions to PRSAs, personal pensions and employee / AVC contributions to occupational pension schemes. AGE

contributions to a PRSA 2. The earnings limit does not apply to employer contributions to occupational pension schemes 3. For occupational pension schemes the total contributions (employer, employee & AVC) must be within overall Revenue maximum contribution limits.
Who Files a Self-Assessment Tax Return?
The self-employed, proprietary directors (those who own more than 15% of a company) and people with non-PAYE income are required to file self-assessment tax returns under the Pay and File system with Revenue. To avoid interest and surcharges they must file a return by 31st October / 10th November 2017( ROS Online) · File their 2016 Income Tax Return · Pay any balance of Income Tax outstanding for 2016 · Pay Preliminary Income Tax for 2017 Employees and Directors in occupational pension schemes can also reduce their 2016 tax bill if they pay an AVC single premium on or before 31st October 2017 and file a return by 31st October 2017.

Oprah Winfrey says if she had married partner of 31 years Stedman Graham they would have split up by now because she doesn’t ‘fit’ traditional role of being a wife
Oprah Winfrey believes her now 31year relationship with Stedman Graham would’ve fallen apart if they’d ever gone down the aisle together. ‘The only time I brought it up was when I said to Stedman: “What would have happened if we had actually gotten married?” And the answer is: “We wouldn’t be together,”’ the 63-year-old media mogul told the September issue of Vogue. Though she’d had a temporary engagement to Stedman in 1992 she told Vogue this year that if they’d wed, ‘We would not have stayed together, because marriage requires a different way of being in this world.’

Taylor Swift WINS Assault Case Against DJ Pop star Taylor Swift has won a sexual assault case against ex-radio DJ David Mueller, who she said had groped her at a 2013 concert. He assaulted her by grabbing her bottom beneath her skirt during a photo shoot, a jury in Denver, Colorado, found. She was awarded a symbolic $1 in damages that she had sought. Mr Mueller had originally tried to sue the pop star, saying that her claims had cost him his job. But that lawsuit was thrown out by a judge last week.
On Monday, the jury also rejected similar claims Mueller had made against the singer’s mother, Andrea Swift, and her radio liaison, Frank Bell. In a statement following the verdict, Ms Swift said: “I acknowledge the privilege that I benefit from in life, in society and in my ability to shoulder the enormous cost of defending myself in a trial like this. ”My hope is to help those whose voices should also be heard. Stiofán’s passion for music has been present since a young age and he says he always aspired to becoming a musician. Mr Mueller, then a host on the radio station KYGO, had been invited to meet her before the show. The singer complained to KYGO and the station fired Mr Mueller two days later. Ms Swift’s former bodyguard gave evidence, supporting her sex assault claims by testifying that he saw the DJ reach under her skirt. Greg Dent told the Colorado court he “did not see his hand touch her physically”, but “saw his hand under her skirt”.

Nestlé Whips Up A Storm IT SAYS a lot for how quiet a night it was that covertly sharing one Walnut Whip between four teenagers became the highlight of a céilí outing during a stint at Irish college in the Gaeltact. OK, it was the 1990s, but the decade surely couldn’t have been that grim? Bite by bite we demolished the gooey chocolate treat. It was either that or play with the tumbleweed! Of course, the person who had gone to the trouble of actually buying said Walnut Whip was allowed to eat the walnut. Which brings me to this week and the outrage the greeted the concept of a Walnut Whip without the nut?

Nestlé this week launched a new range catering to consumers who don’t like nuts. Apple who have, for tax purposes, significant offshore operations in Ireland and elsewhere. On Tuesday President Trump had a lash at business leaders who quit a presidential advisory panel in protest over his response to a rally by far-right groups that turned deadly in Virginia. In responde to ths mass exdous, he claimed the chief executives of Intel, Merck, and Under Armour were leaving out of embarrassment because they made their products outside the US, spe-
cifically in countries like Ireland. Yesterday the IDA played down the presidential reference to Ireland, rejecting suggestions his comments would damage Ireland’s international standing, noting US companies located here primarily for access to European and global markets. The American Chamber of Commerce Ireland, which represents US firms here, said Irish companies were now creating almost as many jobs in the US as the US creates in Ireland. But Preident Trump’s comments definitely don’t help create a sense of security among the many employed by American multinationals here. That said, with just under three-and-a-half years to go in his term in office, does that really give these companies time to up sticks and depart out shores?
Double Ó Seven Takes Rose Of Tralee To New Heights
DÁITHÍ Ó SÉ cut a James Bond-style dash as he arrived via helictoper at the Rose of Tralee launch in Malahide Park on Tuesday. Ó Sé, who will host the event for the eighth time this year, joked about how he had to hitch an alternative ride after his car broke down this morning. “I was hitching a lift and all of a sudden I saw this helicopter up in the air and I called him down and he dropped me off here. What a great guy!” he laughed. Dáithí also confirmed a very special guest and familiar face will be taking to the Festival Dome on the second night of the live televised broadcast on RTÉ One. The Rose of Tralee Festival will be broadcast on RTÉ One at 8pm this Monday and Tuesday, August 21 and 22.

Terror In Spain: Barcelona And Cambrils Attacks Brexit
Words: Eve Kelliher
‘Back Of An Envelope’ Plans Are No Good BACK in January former Greek finance minister Yanis Varoufakis said that fears that Ireland may end up as “collateral damage” in negotiations between London and Brussels are “well-founded”. Well, this looks frighteningly close to the bone as developments gathered pace this week. It would be funny if it wasn’t so serious to hear the UK government’s border plans described as drawn up on the “back of an envelope”, in the immortal words of SDLP Leader Colum Eastwood. But their border proposals for Ire-
land seem vague at best. We’re told there will be no physical border of any kind across the island of Ireland. But how can we be sure that free movement will continue without hassle? By October, the British government will have to have reassured all EU member states that progress has been made on the monetary divorce bill; the mutual rights of British citizens living in the EU and vice versa; and Ireland. We need hard facts, not fairy tales.
MEMBERS of an Irish family holidaying in Barcelona were injured in yesterday’s terror attack in the city. A husband and wife, originally from the Philippines but naturalised Irish citizens, and their two Irish-born children were caught up in the attack. The two terror attacks in Spain have been linked to a house explosion about 100 miles southwest of Barcelona. One person was killed in the blast in the tourist district of Alcanar on Wednesday night – the day before a van attack killed at least 13 people in the Barcelona city centre. Catalan authorities say the attacks are linked. Spanish police have shot dead five attackers who ran over people in the seaside town of Cambrils as special forces were deployed to area just hours after a van ploughed into crowds in Barcelona’s famous Las Ramblas boulevard in which 13 people were killed and at least 100 others injured. The Catalan government says the attacks are linked. The suspects in Cambrils were carrying explosive belts and a bomb squad
Using Your Phone To Plug Out From The Present? IRISH RAIL this week issued warnings about mobile phone use contributing to accidents. But this is not limited to rail travel – mobile phone overuse is dominating every aspect of our lives. Which of us has not bumped into someone sauntering along hunched over their device, or indeed caused such a pedestrian pile-up ourselves on
the street? How many groups will you see this weekend out together, with all present either furiously scrolling through their phone or gazing at the device as if it were their newborn. Guys, you’re out with your friends, why do you feel the need to be “socialising” with someone who is not in your company right now?
Popular Home And Away Star Shares Heartbreaking News SOAP star Johnny Ruffo has said he is starting treatment for brain cancer. The former X Factor Australia contestant recently had surgery for a brain tumour after he went to hospital with a migraine. He shared a photograph of himself in a beanie hat, captioned: “So I have the news. It was a bit of a
shock and I’ve got an interesting journey ahead and a bit of a battle. “I am starting aggressive treatment for the next few months to fight the diagnosis of brain cancer. Please stay positive for me and I’ll try to update you guys on my progress xx” Ruffo – who played Chris Harring-
ton in Home and Away – previously promised the Australian Football League team he supports in Melbourne that he would be back watching games before long. When Essendon FC wrote a message of support on Twitter, Ruffo replied: “I’ll be back watching games before you know it, now let’s charge towards the finals.”
was carrying out several controlled explosions, police said. Mayor Cami Mendoza said the suspects centred their attack on the narrow path to Cambrils’ boardwalk. Footage of the operation in the early hours of the morning at the popular seaside resort, situated 62 miles southwest of Barcelona, showed bystanders running for cover amid the sound of gunfire. Screams and police sirens could be heard in another clip filmed from inside a restaurant as diners ran for cover after hearing gunshots. Catalan authorities urged local residents in a Twitter post to “stay home” and “stay safe”. The Spanish Prime Minister Mariano Rajoy says that the van attack in the Catalan city of Barcelona that killed at least 13 people was “jihadist terrorism” which required a global response. Spanish police have said a third man has been arrested after a suspected Islamist militant drove a van into crowds in Barcelona.

The Bookworm
Reviewed: Lie With Me by Sabine Durrant THIS compelling thriller tells the story of Paul, a one-time successful novelist who is now to all intents and purposes a fulltime freeloader. This delightfully unreliable narrator meets up by chance with an old university friend and inveigles his way
into his circle. This group includes a widow, Alice, and Paul gets himself invited to spend the summer with their families in a Greek villa. A riveting – and at times bitingly satirical – read that will have you wanting to turn right back to the first page once you’ve finished.

Netflix Ozark This ten episode drama stars Jason Bateman and Laura Linney, two of the best actors around Hollywood today. Bateman is the main draw because of his ability to play likable characters who also have just a bit of an edge to them. His character Marty Byrde certainly has an edge. He is a brilliant financial planner who is also involved in laundering money for a Mexican drug cartel. As part of the laundering scheme Marty moves his family to the Ozarks in Missouri. He plans to invest in businesses on “the Redneck Riviera” and clean eight
million dollars through them. Sadly his career choices have an impact on his wife Wendy (Linney) and their children Charlotte and Jonah. The episodes build the tension of the drama from show to show with each one being more complex than the preceding one. There are scenes that are either dramatic, humorous, emotional or in one rare instance inspirational. “Ozark” runs the gamut but always keeps the viewer hanging on for what is next to occur.

Killarney To Welcome Nursing Home Proposal Is ‘Ridiculous’ Bavarian Visitors I WOULD like to advise that the Killarney Town Twinning Association will welcome visitors from our twinned town of Pleinfeld, Bavaria, in Germany, on August 21. The group of 25 persons will be among us as part of an application by the Killarney Town Twinning Association to the European Citizens Programme. The group will be accorded a civic welcome on Monday evening by the Mayor of the Municipal District and council officials. The main business of the visit will take place at 7.30pm in the Killarney Plaza Hotel, in the John McShain Room, where
the citizens of the town interested in exchange programmes are welcome. The Killarney Town Twinning Association has invited those with similar interests, be they culture, sporting, community or business affairs, as well as education bodies, to come and interact with our twinned town of Pleinfeld to continue the successful arrangement put in place by Killarney Town Twinning Association ten years ago. St Finan’s Suggestion I READ the article about St Finan’s Hospital in Killarney Advertiser of Friday, July 28. I was wondering if the location could be a tourist attraction. We’re in the paranormal field ourselves, and have done public events at Loftus Hall. They prove successful. The east of Ireland has many of these events but the west of Ireland doesn’t,
mainly due to the majority of the estate or popular buildings being owned by the OPW. Let me know if the place switches hands. We’d be happy to carry out some research there. Anthony Kerrigan, ‘Ghosteire’ (ghosteire.net), Via email
I WRITE on behalf of many people who are angered by the Minister for Housing, Eoghan Murphy’s ridiculous suggestion to take over people’s vacant houses while they’re in a nursing home. Many people who are in nursing homes and who may have to go into nursing homes shortly are very hurt that their homes that they have lived in all their lives may now be taken off of them with this outrageous proposal. Many people who are in a nursing home today like to think that they will get better and that they will eventually return to their homes. Surely our government will not deny them that
expectation. The government is already taking 22.5% of the value of an old person’s house through the Fair Deal Scheme. Is it now that they’re not satisfied with this amount that they want all of the house? Furthermore, this Minister is suggesting a vacant homes tax which would also impact on vulnerable or sick people while they are in a nursing home. How low can this Minister and this Government go? There is only one answer to the social housing problem and that is to build more houses in the areas that they are needed. Danny Healy-Rae, TD, Kilgarvan

Fiat Joins BMW Rallye Deutschland For Autonomous Cars
The automotive sports grounds have been full of companies picking their teams for the self-driving car development race and, finally, someone chose Fiat Chrysler Automobiles. The Italian car-maker has announced it has signed on to BMW’s team, which also includes such technology giants as Mobileye and Intel. The collaboration between BMW, Intel and Mobileye plans to have 40 Level 5 development prototypes on the world’s roads by the end of the year. It already has a fleet of more than 100 Level 4 cars testing around the world and while it is heavily
ROUND 10 of the FIA World Rally Championship takes place in the German countryside this weekend. Consisting of a combination of broken country roads and fast tarmac set against the backdrop of vineyards. With Thierry Neuville and Sébastien Ogier tied on points at the top of the championship, the title battle is closer than ever before at this point in the season. M-Sport’s Ott Tänak and Toyota’s Jari-Matti Latvala will be hoping to score their second win of the season in Germany, but the momentum is with Esepekka Lappi, who secured the first win of his WRC career last time out. But
skewed towards BMW, its end goal was always to deliver a universally available platform. The BMW-Mobileye-Intel team will help FCA considerably as it gives the company access to all the intellectual property and all the data from every test and development mule. Collaboration between car companies is nothing new with many manufacturers today sharing one production line with multiple brands. The new collaboration with technology-based companies could see Intel or Apple car showrooms. The car industry is going through the most significant evolution since its inception.

any issues for the two leaders in this event will open up the championship presenting the most exciting year in recent WRC history. Kris Meeke and Paul Nagle could find pace in their Citroën this weekend after nine times WRC champion Sébastien Loeb recently tested the Citroën C3 WRC and provided valuable feedback to the team ahead of this event. The car is quick on tarmac but whether the team will attack or just use the event to gather data for next year’s car is yet to be seen. The team have publicity written off this year in favour of developing next year’s car.

VW
VW Offers Up To €10,000 To Ditch Old Diesels In Germany VOLKSWAGEN GROUP has announced it will offer as much as €10,000 to owners of older diesel to tempt them to trade them in for a new VW in their home market. The aim of the new scheme is seen as VW Group enthusiastically backing the German government’s new drive to rid the country of ‘polluting’ diesels, Dieselgate – the irony. The cynical among us can only see the pressures coming from Angela Merkel, on her campaign trail recently bashing
the CEOs of the German auto industry from the revelations of the Dieselgate affair and the effects it has had on the German industrial reputation, a reputation that Germany has built its whole economy on. The auto industry is the largest industrial sector in Germany, contributing about 2.7% to GPD. Some 20% of Germany’s exports are from the auto industry. Domestic and export auto sales are in the region of €400billion a year employing over 800,000 people.
Who has who over a barrel is difficult to see on the face of it but the German car industry throughout its history has had strong political connections. We all know who commissioned the ‘Peoples Car’. In VW’s case today, the German state of Lower Saxony owns 20% of VW’s voting stock worth €7.7billion making it the second largest shareholder. Two representatives on VW’s supervisory board have regional political careers with little insight car-making industry.
The German auto industry will be a political football in the upcoming German elections but could spell the end of political meddling in the industry for good. Other German automakers have also offered the German government a new quick fix software update to cut NOx emissions in five million vehicles. The free fix, seen as an industry-wide attempt to avert an outright diesel ban, is claimed to reduce harmful smog-inducing NOx emissions by 25 to 35 per cent.

7TH ANNIVERSARY / 22ND BIRTHDAY REMEMBRANCE BREEN
In loving memory of Ann Fleming late of Scartlea, Muckross who died on the 20th August, 2005. When I come to the end of the road, And the sun has set for me, I want no rites in a gloom filled room, Why cry for a soul set free? Miss me a little, But not too long, And not with your head bowed low, Miss me, but let me go. For this is a journey, We all must take, And each must go alone, It’s all a part of the master’s plan, A step on the road to home, When you are lonely, and sick of heart, Go to the friends we know, And bury your sorrow, In doing deeds, Miss me, but let me go. Sadly missed by the Fleming family and extended family.

Mom A special mother so very rare, When we needed you Mom, You were always there, Your pleasures were simple, Your wants were few, If your children were happy, Then so were you.
If we could have one life time wish And one dream that could come true, We would pray to God With all our hearts Just to see and speak to you again.
Always remembered by your loving daughter Liz, Seamus, Kiara and Shane. Mom Those special memories of you, Will always bring a smile, If only I could have you back, For just a little while, Then we could sit and talk again, Just like we used to do, You always meant so very much, And always will do too.
A thousand words won’t bring you back, We know because we’ve tried And neither will a million tears, We know because we’ve cried. You’ve left behind our broken hearts And precious memories too, But we never wanted memories We only wanted you Jason. Garden Magic Debby Looney
Flowers have long had meanings assigned to them, says Debby Looney IN VICTORIAN times it was the height of fashion for people to exchange floral “messages”, to convey feelings which could not be spoken aloud. For instance, Sweet William – gallantry, ivy – fidelity and hyacinth – constancy of love. Dahlias represent lifelong commitment. When given as a gift, they signify elegance and dignity. As flower lore is experiencing a revival, so too are Dahlias. They have long been regarded as old-fashioned and fussy, both in appearance and maintenance. Recently however, and maybe we have the term “retro” to thank for this, the Dahlia is becoming popular again. Dahlias originate from Mexico, and were sent to the director of the Royal gardens of Madrid in 1789. This Director, Antonio Cavanilles, propagated the plant and named it after the Swedish botanist, Anders Dahl. Dahlias are not completely frost hardy in Ireland, and most tubers do need to be lifted. Here in Kerry we are not as affected by the cold as in other parts of the country, but if your soil is waterlogged you will have to lift your tubers. This is easy to do: when the first frosts have blackened the foliage cut it back to ground level. Carefully dig up the tuber using a fork and leave to dry, so the soil comes away from it. Trim off all small roots. Place the tubers in a shallow timber box and pack with sand, leaving the crown exposed. Keep in a cool but frost-free place over winter. In spring, when all danger of frost has passed – and yes, it may be May! – plant your tubers in well-drained fertile soil in full sun. Alternatively they can be started off in early spring in a greenhouse. Pinch out shoots to encourage bushy growth. Once flower buds appear, give them plenty of high potash liquid feed. Dahlias are prone to a few problems, and keeping the plant strong and healthy is key to avoiding some of these. First to come after your Dahlias are, of course, slugs. Keep them at bay with beer traps, pellets, copper tape or hand pick them off. Hot on the slugs metaphorical heels are aphids, earwigs and capsid bugs. These can be treated with PY spray, or earwigs can be trapped by putting a terracotta pot loosely filled with straw, upside down near the base of the plant. In the morning shake out the earwigs. It is good to bear in mind that earwigs are omnivores, and that your flowers are the side salad to the main course of aphids and other pests and their eggs… Powdery mildew is another common problem of Dahlias, however this is easily controlled with good ventilation, and fungicide spray. Again, the healthier your plants, the stronger their resistance. Some excellent varieties are, Bishop of Llandaff, deep red flowers, dark foliage, Twyning’s After Eight, singleflowered white variety on dark foliage, the Happy Days group, with a wide range of colours on dark foliage. Chick a Dee has purple pompom flowers atop bright green foliage. Now is the perfect time to have a look at online catalogues for tubers. In this weekly column, the clergy and members of the pastoral council offer an update on issues concerning the Church locally, nationally and globally
Life Through The Lens Of The Gospels
MATTHEW 15:21-28: Having met with rejection from the Pharisees Jesus goes to Gentile territory and encounters faith in an unexpected place, in the Canaanite woman. His mission had previously been to his own people. This adds a new dimension to his mission. Have you had occasions when a chance encounter set your life off in a new direction? The initial reaction of Jesus to the woman was one of rejection but her persistence won a response from him. When have you found that persistence was needed to gain what you sought? What did that experience teach you? In our days, welcoming the stranger is a challenge. We are more comfortable with our own. What difference has it made when you were able to offer a friendly welcoming face to a stranger? Who are the ‘Canaanite women’ who call out for attention today – people in Church or State whose needs are not being attended to? John Byrne OSA, Veritas
Unexpected Encounters
WE MIGHT wonder why Jesus is so rude and dismissive to the woman in the Gospel who comes and asks for his help. Does he really call the woman “a dog”?! Many explanations have been given for Jesus’ words
Support Groups
with some suggesting that it was an attempt at a first century joke, that he was just “teasing” (he didn’t really mean it!) or that it was an opportunity to test the woman’s faith. The disciples also clearly want her sent away. What happens just before this incident is important. Jesus has just left Gennesaret where the Pharisees have continued to be extremely hostile towards him. Jesus’ mission to “the lost sheep of the House of Israel” is not going so well. So, Jesus “leaves that place” and goes somewhere that is unfamiliar. What happens in this unfamiliar place is certainly life giving for the woman and for Jesus also. It might be considered a place of new beginnings as Jesus’ mission is opened up to those who would have been considered ‘unworthy’, such as a woman who is also a foreigner. The food rejected by the religious leaders of the time is ending up in unexpected places. It is here that the kingdom grows. You have to admire the woman’s persistence. She is a reminder of people we encounter who have great faith and make a deep impression on us. We might ask ourselves today: when have experiences of rejection in our own lives led to new possibilities? Where are the unfamiliar places that we must go in order to grow, to embrace new life and new experiences? Jane Mellet, Veritas

Kerry Looking Strong But History Is Still Mayo’s Biggest Foe Mayo undoubtedly have the talent to trouble Eamonn Fitzmaurice’s Kerry but the record books don’t lie, writes Adam Moynihan
Kerry’s Johnny Buckley and Fionn Fitzgerald at a training session in the Fitzgerald Stadium. Pic: Eamonn Keogh.
All-Ireland Semi-Final Kerry v Mayo Sunday, August 20, at 3.30pm (RTÉ 2 from 2.45pm) I wouldn’t consider myself to be very superstitious but at some point even the biggest sceptic has to start wondering about that Mayo Curse. Misfortune is one thing but last year’s drawn game against Dublin was insane. With 30 minutes on the clock, not a single Dublin player had registered a score, yet Mayo still trailed by two points. I’ve never heard of any side scoring two own goals in any football game ever let alone in an AllIreland final, and when you consider the fact that the same county had contrived to lose their seven previous finals, a vengeful priest genuinely starts to look like a logical explanation. Curse or no curse, there is certainly a prevailing feeling that this Mayo outfit have missed their chance and are on somewhat of a downward trajectory. They’re still a fairly young team who have reached three finals in five years (the same as Dublin, one more than Kerry and three more than Tyrone, who haven’t been in an All-Ireland since 2008), yet Stephen Rochford’s men are 13/2 outsiders to lift the Sam Maguire in September. They haven’t made the Connacht final since 2015 and they stumbled past a fairly average Cork team
John Maughan led them to victory over Kerry in the All-Ireland semi-final of 1996 and you have to go all the way back to the semi-final in 1951 to find the last victory before that
in the qualifiers earlier this year. It took them two attempts to see off Roscommon in the quarters and now Cillian O’Connor and co. will have to turn over Kerry and Dublin (probably) if they’re to capture the Holy Grail. Whatever about finding a way of stopping the Dublin machine, Mayo will have to tackle Kerry first and historically this fixture hasn’t been kind to the Westerners. In 25 championship encounters, Mayo have
beaten Kerry just four times. John Maughan led them to victory in the All-Ireland semi-final of 1996 and you have to go all the way back to the semi-final in 1951 to find the last victory before that. Kerry, of course, defeated Mayo in the finals of 1997, 2004 and 2006. The last two were particularly bloody affairs. The most recent clashes between the sides, 2014’s All-Ireland semi-final and subsequent replay, offered up some great entertainment but Kerry prevailed once again thanks to a gritty performance up in Limerick. James O’Donoghue, who went on to win Player of the Year, scored 2-6 on the day and the Kingdom defeated Donegal in the final to clinch their 37th All-Ireland title. This year Kerry have impressed en route to the last four although it’s difficult to gauge how well things are going until you play one of the big boys. The National League triumph over Dublin will still be a source of great confidence as Eamonn Fitzmaurice’s men approach the business end of the season and with the outstanding Paul Geaney, the rejuvenated Donaghy and the ever dangerous O’Donoghue in attack, they should have enough firepower to get the job done on Sunday. There’s no question that in the likes of Cillian O’Connor, Aidan O’Shea and Lee Keegan, Mayo have the talent to cause an upset. History, however, tells us a very different story.

The victorious Dr Crokes junior team.
Crokes Edge Tense O’Sullivan Cup Final A local derby that promised so much ultimately disappointed, writes Adam Moynihan East Kerry Junior Championship O’Sullivan Cup Final Dr Crokes 0-10 Spa 0-9 The Dr Crokes juniors put in a dogged display to just about see off town rivals Spa in the O’Sullivan Cup final on Tuesday night in Derreen. There was plenty of talent on the field but the tie was far from a classic as both sides struggled to get going in the final third. In the end, Spa’s failure to convert one of their many goal chances was the deciding factor and Crokes held on to win by the narrowest of margins. Spa were able to field a number of established senior players including the likes of Shane Lynch, Brian Lynch and Eoin Fitzgerald in defence and Cian Tobin and Cormac Cronin in attack, but as a unit they looked bereft of ideas in the opening period and found themselves four down at the break. There was plenty of experience in the Crokes team too, especially in attack where Chris Brady and Jamie Doolan looked to set the tone, but it was youngster Michael Casey who really caught the eye early on. The pacey corner forward notched two first-half points and posed a constant threat, although he will probably feel as though he should have scored a couple more. His second in the 20th minute opened up a commanding 7-2 lead and Spa were very much on the ropes. Cian Tobin kicked the final score of the half to make it 7-3 but his side needed to be far more dynamic in attack if they were to make any real inroads. Niall McCarthy almost fired Spa back into contention in the opening stages of the second but Johnny O’Leary made an excellent save to deny him, while at the other end Eoin Fitzgerald made a timely intervention to deny Chris Brady a certain goal.
It certainly wasn’t vintage football from the Crokes but Cillian Fitzgerald, David Naughton and Jason Lyne all impressed, as did Johnny O’Leary who rightly picked up the Man of the Match award for his performance between the sticks
Spa senior star Michael O’Donoghue, who was introduced at half time, was making his presence felt and he kicked two unanswered points to halve the deficit. Crokes, meanwhile, had to wait until the 42nd minute for their first score of the period, Chris Brady’s free their first in 22 minutes. Niall McCarthy hit the bar moments later and it was beginning to look like Crokes’ day. McCarthy did manage to pull one back in the 51st minute to make it 8-6 but Crokes almost won it a minute later when Chris Doncel found an opening. Unfortunately for him his driven effort cannoned back off the post. With five minutes to go, Johnny O’Leary came forward to kick an excellent free and when Michael Casey made it 10-6 a minute later, Spa’s race looked to have been run. Left: Spa captain Cormac Cronin, referee James O’Sullivan and Dr Crokes captain Jason Lyne before the throw-in. Right: East Kerry Board chairman Tim Ryan and Kathleen O’Sullivan present the O’Sullivan Cup to winning captain Jason Lyne.
They kept scrapping, however, and two more late points from O’Donoghue, the second a goalward bound effort that was tipped over by O’Leary, had them within striking distance. Substitute Andy Fitzgerald could have been the hero for Spa but, with virtually the last kick of the game, he turned and fired over from close range. Spa felt aggrieved with a number of refereeing decisions down the stretch and I would be inclined to agree with them in one or two instances, but ultimately it was their own wastefulness in front of goal that cost them. It certainly wasn’t vintage football from the Crokes but Cillian Fitzgerald, David Naughton and Jason Lyne all impressed, as did Johnny O’Leary who rightly picked up the Man of the Match award for his performance between the sticks. Crokes scorers: Chris Brady (0-3f), Michael Casey (0-3), Aaron Murphy (0-1), Chris Doncel (0-1), Cian O’Neill (01) and Johnny O’Leary (0-1f). Spa scorers: Michael O’Donoghue (0-4, 2f), Cian Tobin (0-2, 1f), Niall McCarthy (0-2), and Andy Fitzgerald (01). Crokes team: Johnny O’Leary, Brian Fitzgerald, Creagh Courtney, Mark Egan, David Naughton, Kieran Ward, Cillian Fitzgerald, Jason Lyne, Dan Healy, Chris Brady, Aaron Murphy, Chris Doncel, Michael Casey, Mark O’Shea and Jamie Doolan. Subs: Cian O’Neill for Mark O’Shea and Brendan Coppinger for Creagh Courtney. Spa team: Aaron Farrell, Shane Lynch, Brian Lynch, Eoin Fitzgerald, Eric O’Donoghue, Eoghan Cronin, Aydan Mulvaney, Hugh O’Donoghue, David Spillane, Shane Fenton, Rory O’Riordan, Ciarán Spillane, Cormac Cronin, Cian Tobin and Niall McCarthy. Subs: Michael O’Donoghue for Rory O’Riordan and Andy Fitzgerald for Aydan Mulvaney.

Legion Bounce Straight Back, Spa Set To Join Them Following important County League victories for Legion and Spa, all three Killarney clubs could be operating in Division 1 next season, writes Adam Moynihan
LEGION confirmed their immediate return to Division 1 following a comprehensive 1-16 to 0-8 win over Waterville in Derreen on Sunday. Alan O’Neill’s side maintained their undefeated record with another dominant display, full forward Jamie O’Sullivan leading the way with nine points and Conor Keane adding 1-1 from play. The victory ensured that Legion’s stint in Division 2 was as short-lived as possible. Confidence must have been low from last year’s relegation and with three of their best players unavailable for the league campaign due to their involvement with the Kerry seniors - a large contingent for a Division 2 team - promotion at the first attempt was far from a foregone conclusion. Players and management deserve a lot of credit for bouncing straight back and, speaking after the game, chairman Enda Walshe said it was very important for the club to make a swift return to Division 1. “As a senior club, the higher level of football you’re
A goal from Shane Cronin and good point-kicking from Evan Cronin & Michael O’Donoghue propelled Spa to victory and they now have their fate very much in their own hands
playing the better as we’re trying to develop our young players,” he said. “Being a Division 1 senior club in Kerry you’re part of an elite group and it’s important to be regularly measuring yourself against the like of Dr Crokes and Rathmore. In the short term, though, our aim is to go up as champions which makes our last game against Glenflesk a must-win,” he added. Meanwhile, Spa took a huge step towards promotion with a crucial 1-12 to 0-10 win over Kenmare Shamrocks on Saturday. The full back line of Shane Lynch, Brian Lynch and Eoin Fitzgerald impressed as did forward Cian Tobin who is back home for the summer. A goal from Shane Cronin and good point-kicking from Evan Cronin and Michael O’Donoghue propelled the Killarney side to victory and they now have their fate very much in their own hands. A point on the final day (Sunday, August 27, if Kerry lose to Mayo, late September if they win) would be enough to send Spa back into Division 1 for the first time since 2013 and O’Donoghue feels promotion would be huge for the club. “It’s very important, especially for the development
of our younger players,” he said. “A large number of our players are under the age of 23 and this would be their first crack at Division 1 should we get there, so it would be a new experience for them and it’d give them an opportunity to kick on with Spa.” Spa aren’t mathematically up yet and the talismanic forward knows there’s still work to be done. “We’ve Kilcummin the last day of the season so we need to get a point out of that game,” he noted. “Should Kilcummin get the better of us, we’d need our good friends Legion to do us a favour away to Glenflesk.”
Glenflesk currently find themselves four points behind Spa and two behind Beaufort so Friday’s clash with Kilcummin is a big one if they have real designs on staging a dramatic push for promotion. Kilcummin on the other hand desperately need a result if they’re to have any chance of avoiding successive relegations. A win for Beaufort against St Pat’s would put them joint second with Spa on 15 points and inch them one step closer to Kerry’s top table.
Division 2: This weekend’s key fixtures Kilcummin v Glenflesk Friday, August 18, at 7.30pm (Kilcummin) Beaufort v St Pat’s Friday, August 18, at 7 pm (Beaufort)
Spa’s Michael O’Donoghue says promotion is important for the development of the club’s younger players.

Kerry Bid For All-Ireland Final Places Words: Eamonn Fitzgerald KERRY travel to Croke Park on Sunday next bidding for places in the All-Ireland senior and minor football finals. In the senior final Kerry will meet Mayo, who earned their spot with a runaway win over Roscommon in a replay. They won that game by 4-19 to 0-9 and that will install them as favourites. They ripped through the Roscommon defence and that begs the question can they do the same by running at the Kerry defence. Although Kerry won well at the end Galway had four clear chances of goals and if any one of them was converted Kerry might not be in the semi-final. Mayo have been well tested in seven games and they will have learned a lot. Inconsistency is their weakness so one will wonder can they put together another display like the Roscommon game. They have some great individual players such as Lee Keegan, Aidan O’Shea, Tom Parsons, Donal Vaughan, Kevin Higgins and Andy Moran. They have great physicality like the Dubs. Will that prevent Kerry from playing their traditional game? Remember how close this Mayo team came to winning an All Ireland only to gift Dubs two goals and there was that strange saga about changing goalkeepers for the final. Kerry have done everything that has been asked of them in this short campaign but consider Mayo, who were well tested through the qualifiers. Kerry have not been really tested by Clare and by Cork. Galway was their first test and they stood up to the challenge. Their outstanding players in the quarterfinal were Paul Murphy, Brian Kelly and captain Johnny Buckley, who has shaken off that troublesome knee injury. Clearly James O’Donoghue was not fully match fit for the Galway game so one hopes that he has fully recovered for Sunday’s big game. Kerry will need to play better
Rugby News ... Words: Liam Murphy THE Women’s Rugby World Cup kicked off in earnest last week as Ireland took on Australia in the opening round at the UCD Bowl in Dublin. A tough start for Tom Tierney’s charges who took a knock in the run up to the world cup with the loss of captain Niamh Briggs. A cracking match ensued and Australia looked the stronger side until Kerry girl Ciara Griffin came on to the field as a sub and scored an inspirational try with an outstanding performance by the Ballymac girl earning the
in the middle of the field, where James Barry or Anthony Maher will partner David Moran.
MAYO’S HARD LUCK Mayo have been the hard luck story in the quest for the Sam Maguire and most followers of football will be hoping for a change of luck. That being so let’s hope that it is not at Kerry’s expense on Sunday next. Beating Kerry and then losing to Tyrone or Dublin would be hard to take. The four best teams have qualified for the semi-finals. For the third time in five years, Kerry, Dublin, Mayo and Tyrone have qualified for the penultimate stage of the championship. Donegal in 2014 and Tipperary in 2016 were the only ones to break through. It is 27 years since none of the current top four have featured in the last four.
THE MINORS One can expect a huge attendance on Sunday as Kerry will travel in force hoping that the minors will continue their fantastic run of successes, as they bid for that magical four in a row of All Ireland titles. I expect Peter Keane will have them in the best of shape and that David Clifford will lead them in to the final. Cavan will present the opposition in next Sunday’s curtain-raiser. The seniors get a narrow vote to make it to the final.
SEMI-FINAL The semi final draw for the Keanes Supervalu Killorglin Minor Football Championship was made last week and resulted in the following pairings: St Kierans V East Kerry; St Brendan’s V Kenmare District. The semi-finals will be played at neutral venues on August 23.
LEGION RETURN TO DIVISION 1
Legion 1-16 Waterville Frank Caseys 0-8 A steady downpour for the entire first half in Dereen impacted in a big way on the quality of
win for the home side. Ciara is no stranger to Killarney RFC, she visited Aghadoe last June with the Women’s Rugby World Cup trophy and stayed for photographs with our younger members. It’s great to see Ciara O’Connor from Killorglin playing also and North Kerry girl Louise Galvin is also in the squad. Kerry is well represented in the world cup, a fact which bodes very well for the development of girls rugby in the Kingdom. Last Sunday, a busload of proud Irish Supporters travelled from Killarney RFC to Dublin to watch the Rugby World Cup match against Japan. Our girls section, some coaches, parents and families travelled to UCD and
had a wonderful day in the capital, catching the USA V Spain math as well as the riveting Ireland match. It’s truly fantastic to have this much support for girls’ rugby in Killarney. Killarney RFC is dedicated to developing girls rugby in the Killarney area and beyond. Last season we brought our girls to Listowel RFC and Tralee RFC for training sessions and the girls even caught a Munster match at Thomond Park! We have a dedicated team in place who are focused on growing girls rugby. If you have a daughter inspired by the world cup, why not come to Aghadoe when the minis season kicks off on September 2 and “give it a try!”
football both teams served up. In a cagey and often error strewn first period both defences had the upper hand, however delivery of good ball to the forwards was often errant and over ambitious considering the conditions. The Legion did have a trump card in Jamie O’Sullivan at full forward and he was the stand out performer on the day with a personal tally of nine points, while narrowly missing the net on two further occasions. Waterville had their own top scorer in Stephen O’Dwyer, who returned a fine total of seven points. The Legion led by just two points at the break (0-6 to 0-4) but it took Waterville less than five minutes of the second half to level matters. This shook the home side into action and a scoring burst of six points opened a winning gap. Shaun Keane was a huge influence in midfield and the introduction of Conor Keane added a big threat, He scored 1-1 from play. Danny and Cathal Sheahan were steady and consistent in the Legion defence and needed to be as cousins Barry and Sam O’Dwyer were a constant threat as proved when alert Legion goalie Conor McCarthy had to pull off two top class saves. This win sees the Legion return to Division 1 of the county league. Kenmare 0-10 Spa 1-12 THE winners took a giant step towards promotion in this game which was played in Kenmare on Saturday evening last. The hosts kicked the first two points of the contest but by the eleventh minute Spa had gone ahead, 0-03 to 0-02. Both sides kicked two more each with 25 minutes gone. After a very entertaining first half, the sides went to the dressing rooms with a point between them, Spa 0-07 to Kenmare’s 0-06. The second half saw the sides exchange points and all present knew that a goal would be a huge score for either side. Twenty-two minutes after the re-start, with Spa leading 0-11 to 0-09, that vital green flag score arrived. A fine move by Spa saw their lead increase to five points. The Kenmare lads tried hard to get a goal of their own, but a slightly better Spa team held out and went home with two very important league points. Final score, Spa 1-12 Kenmare 0-10.

Beaufort Sensation O’Donoghue’s Dazzling Debut HANNAH O’DONOGHUE scored a sparkling debut as a senior when Kerry powered their way into the TG4 All-Ireland ladies senior football championship semi-finals. Their six-point triumph over Armagh in last Saturday’s quarterfinal at Nowlan Park, Kilkenny, sees Kerry face Dublin on August 26. O’Donoghue, an underage Republic of Ireland soccer international, collected 1-4 from play, while seasoned attacker Louise Ní Mhuircheartaigh add-
ed 1-3 for the Munster champions. Graham Shine’s Kerry were two points down at half-time, 2-7 to 2-9, but they outscored Armagh by 1-7 to 0-2 in the second half. Kerry were much the better side after the break – and Armagh suffered a massive blow with 11 minutes left when Niamh Marley was sin-binned. Hannah, 16, was a late inclusion to the Kerry staring line-up and the Beaufort sensation, who won two All-Ireland U16 medals under Shine’s guidance,
more than justified that call-up. She opened the scoring with a point in the first minute and Kerry added two more to lead by 0-3 to 0-0 within eight minutes. O’Donoghue netted in the tenth minute for Kerry, finishing off good approach play from the lively Sarah Houlihan and Laura Rogers, and Shine’s charges had a 1-3 to 0-0 lead. Their date with Dublin will mark Kerry’s first semi-final appearance since 2015.

MUNSTER INTER-COUNTY CHAMPIONSHIPS: It was dramatic to say the least but for the second time in five years an all Deerpark Kerry U-16 team won a major honour as the team of Adam Kelly (Capt), Cillian Courtney, Jack McCarthy, Darragh O’Callaghan, Erin Moloney and Robbie Harnett won out after a playoff was needed to decide the outcome between Cork and themselves. Trailing by seven after the Scotch Foursomes, Kerry came good in the Singles to level matters on 14 under par for both counties before all players played a further three holes with Kerry three shots better after the conclusion of same. We say well done to all concerned and thank both Michael Foley and St John Kelliher for looking after the team on the day as Cillian and Jack join their older brothers Creagh and Sean Courtney along with Conor and Stephen McCarthy in winning Munster Inter-County medals. Our Juvenile anglers were in action last Friday night on the banks of Barryfinney Lake competing for our Juvenile Cup Competition. Fishing took place in better conditions than our earlier outing on the shores and everyone was spared the rain gear thankfully. Winner on the night was Ryan Moloney and second place went to Aisling Coffey. Our senior lake competition for the Tom Bambury Memorial Trophy took place on Lough Lein Last Sunday. All anglers partaking were mindful of the absence of Tom’s son Gerry from the event as his presence was missed both on the lake and at the weigh in. Fishing was a pleasant experience in the morning but the forecast was true and accurate and the showers were both heavy and frequent in the afternoon. The top five rods on the day were as follows: 1) Mick Lenihan, 2) Tom Dennehy, 3) Stuart Steadwood, 4) Donal Doherty, 5) Steve Cambell. Tom Dennehy had the honour of the heaviest trout on the day. Our next competition on the calendar is the annual away trip to Lough Currane, scheduled for Sunday 03rd September.
