Call for shoppers to use "common sense" parking

With days to go to Christmas and a huge surge in shopping expected - one local group is calling on the public to keep access open for shoppers with disabilities. | By Michelle Crean

EXCLUSIVE

The Irish Wheelchair Association (IWA) is asking Killarney businesses to keep their pathways and disability parking clear for shoppers in wheelchairs and their families, as lockdown ends and for the public to be mindful of where they park. Illegal parking in disabled spaces, double parking on footpaths, and even family members using a disability disc inappropriately cause a huge inconvenience and lack of access for those who need it most. A recent Irish Wheelchair Association survey found that 77% of people with physical disabilities have poor or no access to public spaces and amenities because of issues with pavements, parking, pedestrian crossings and more. Now, as shoppers descend on Killarney town in the coming days, the IWA has launched a special Christmas appeal calling on the public to think twice and think of others. This week Bernard James, a service user with the IWA Killarney branch at the Reeks Gateway, says people with disabilities have a right to go shopping too but are fearful that the next few days are going to be manic in relation to parking. He says that it's daunting to go out and about during normal shopping times

and lack of parking or bad parking such as up on footpaths coupled with bad weather will make it very difficult. "It depends on the weather also as I might have to travel far to get to the shop I need to go to. I understand everybody has to shop but I am just asking for people to be more aware of where they park." Terry O'Brien, Service Coordinator for the IWA Kerry, says people need to "use a common sense approach" to parking

and access. "We're not trying to scaremonger anybody but giving a gentle reminder to people that people in wheelchairs are also excited about shopping for Christmas. The last thing we want is that in the middle of the madness that there will be wheelchair users that can't access parking to go shopping. We're asking that people don't abuse the disabled parking spaces." The IWA has also launched its Christmas

Killarney bypass plans takes small step farward

EXCLUSIVE

|| By Sean Moriarty Members of the public will be able to view maps of potential routes for the proposed Killarney bypass and Farranfore road upgrade as early as March next year according to Kerry County Council officials. The project, as revealed in the Killarney Advertiser last month, has officially entered Phase Two 'Options Stage' after consultants Jacob’s Engineering Ireland identified several potential routes. They are preparing drawings and maps on possible road layouts. “It is anticipated that the first display of the new Route Corridor options will take place in March 2021 using Online Consultation Platforms,” a Council official told this week’s meeting of Kerry County Council after being asked for a progress update by County Mayor Patrick Connor-Scarteen. The Council also confirmed that the route proposals would include links to the Macroom bypass which is currently under construction. Plans for the new road, designed to take traffic directly from the Muckross area to the Cork Road, will also be revealed next year. It is hoped that the proposed routes will be signed off by late next year or in early 2022 with the project then moving to the environmental stage, ahead of a planning application in 2024. fundraising appeal, which supports services for people with physical disabilities through community centres and sports clubs. Anger at lack of Council progress on Áras Phádraig site | By Sean Moriarty Kerry County Council will present a briefing on the plan for the Áras Phádraig building on the Lewis Road early next year. The Council’s executive is currently completing a cost-benefit analysis on the site. February will mark the fourth anniversary of a public consultation into the future of the site. The Franciscan Order donated the site to the people of Killarney in 2009

and nearly 12 years on local councillors are getting increasingly frustrated at a lack of progress. Over a year ago, Council officials promised that they would present a development plan for the town centre site and so far nothing has been done. Killarney Mayor Brendan Cronin called the Council to task at Monday’s ordinary meeting between elected councillors and the executive in Tralee. “Will Kerry County Council give a date for

the presentation of detailed proposals to utilise this unique location?” he asked the meeting. The Council cited several official reasons for the delay including the potential to include the Áras Phádraig in the town’s development plan which is currently under consideration and need to get approval from the Department of Public Expenditure and Reform before money can be spent on the site. Following the 2017 public consultation,

Kerry County Council made several proposals for the site, including the provision of a theatre, community space, an office for Kerry Parents and Friends and car parking. “This development requires a financial and economic appraisal of the developed options including a Cost-Benefit Analysis to determine that the overall development will be financially viable and will deliver an economic return in the area,” a Council official told the meeting.

New speed indicator light for Glenflesk village A new speed indicator light is to be installed in Glenflesk village in the coming weeks which is just one step of many road safety requirements for the area. | By Sean Moriarty

EXCLUSIVE

On Wednesday, Paul Curry of the Kerry National Roads Design Office, hosted a Killarney Municipal District briefing where he confirmed plans to place the speed indicator sign in the village. Locally politicians, particularly Cllr Maura and TD Danny Healy-Rae have been campaigning for traffic calming devices in the village for years. A local woman was fatally injured while crossing the road there in December 2017. While Cllr Maura Healy-Rae welcomed the decision to install a speed indication sign, she said it was only the first step of many needed to make the village safe for pedestrians. “These measures need to be implemented in full to avoid any further loss of life at this location but it is important to bear in mind this is one step to address speed and safety concerns at this location,” she told the Killarney Advertiser after Wednesday’s meeting. “The speed limit was reduced, but there is ongoing concerns regarding speed in Glenflesk. I have tabled numerous motions regarding these issues and have called for the need for a full traffic calming scheme inclusive of traffic calming measures, upgrading of the pedestrian crossing and the erection of speed indicator signs. Kerry County Council and the Kerry National Roads

Cllr Maura Healy-Rae. Design Office are currently preparing a number of options for a traffic calming scheme and are engaging and consulting with residents and businesses in the area. This is a welcome step in the process that I have campaigned for, for a long time.” Her father Danny, a former elected member of Kerry County Council and now a TD in Dáil Éireann campaigned for these measures during his time as a councillor. “This is one part of addressing the ongoing speed and safety issues at this location. This is something we have both been looking for, for a very long time and there have been several motions raised on this important matter,” he told the Killarney Advertiser.

Ryanair will not fly to Kerry-London in January | By Sean Moriarty Ryanair will not fly to and from Kerry and London between January 5 and the middle of February at the earliest as COVID-19 restrictions have created even more uncertainty for the airline industry. The news will come as a blow to several London-based Kerry immigrants who chose to fly home for Christmas. Many had delayed their annual trip home to early in the New Year as a result of rising Coronavirus restrictions in the UK. London was placed into Tier 3 restrictions earlier this week which is the same as Level 5 in Ireland. For one London-based Aghadoe family it means that their already postponed New Year trip home is now cancelled.

Tara Cronin usually spends Christmas in London and returns home in time to celebrate New Year in Killarney. She has already postponed that trip until January 15. Ryanair told customers this week that one flight will serve each of the two London airports on New Year’s day. A Stansted flight will operate on January 3 and a Luton flight is scheduled for January 5. After these dates it not possible to book a flight between Kerry and London until mid-February and even at that the Cronin family are not confident that this will be possible by then. “The first flight now is February, but even that will be cancelled, I think," Tara said.“I tried changing the flights but it is easier now to go looking for refunds."

€6k raised in memory of much loved colleague | By Michelle Crean A wonderful member of staff often referred to as ‘mother’ was warmly remembered by her colleagues this week as they presented a cheque to charity. Rita McLellan, late of Faha and previously of Ardshanavooley, received wonderful care in the Palliative Care Unit at University Hospital Kerry prior to her death in October 2019. And as a way to honour her memory her colleagues this year decided to raise funds for Kerry Hospice Foundation. Muckross Garden Restaurant raised

€6,000 donating the funds from their annual Crib Collection. The team presented the cheque to Pat Doolan from the Killarney branch last week. Rita had been a valued friend and colleague in Muckross Garden Restaurant since 1988 and part of the Muckross ‘family’ where she was often referred to as ‘mother’, according to restaurant manager Colin Baker. "Rita was most popular with all our tourists and local customers alike and to this day she is still fondly remembered by our Irish holiday makers who return each year," he said. "She left a lasting impression on everyone."

Witnesses sought following collision | By Michelle Crean Local Gardai are seeking the assistance from the public for information following a traffic collision between a vehicle and a pedestrian. At 5.10pm on Sunday, a collision occurred between a vehicle and a pedestrian at Sister Joseph's Road, Killarney. The pedestrian was removed from the

scene by ambulance with non serious injuries. The driver of the vehicle is assisting Gardaí with their investigations. Killarney Gardaí are now seeking witnesses to this incident. Anyone who observed this occurrence are asked to contact Killarney Garda Station and provide their contact details to the working Sergeant.

Transition Year students at St Brigid’s Secondary School will learn this week if they have been accepted in the prestigious nationwide 'F1 in Schools Ireland' competition. | By Sean Moriarty The school has entered two teams and if either team is successful, they will become the first students from Kerry to participate in the nationwide competition that encourages STEM education through the design and build of a real-life racing car. The students on Team Vroom-Vroom are Ilona Sheehan, Kayla Byrne, Grace Daly and Ella Galvin. Representing Team Mario Cart are Alanna Brady, Kate Donoghue, Meadhbh Bennett and Abbie Daly. Both teams have submitted a five-page plan to the competition organisers and will know on Monday if they have been selected to participate in the regional finals which are scheduled to take place in February and March.

“We decided to enter because there is such a broad range in the project. Two of us want to study physics, one of us wants to study marketing and one of us is into engineering and this project covers all of that,” Vroom Vroom team manager Ilona Sheehan told the Killarney Advertiser. “We have submitted our plan, which includes a CAD drawing of our racing car, and will know early next week if we make it to the regionals.” They have secured financial backing from Formula Female, an organisation set up by Irish international hockey star and motorsport data engineer Nicci Daly to encourage more females to follow an engineering path in education and career choice. The internationally recognised competition is endorsed by the Formula 1 Grand Prix Championship.

Call to use Bing Crosby’s Christmas carol to promote Killarney town | By Sean Moriarty Legendary singer Bing Crosby’s carol 'Christmas in Killarney’ is not being used enough to promote the town at this time of the year - according to local well-known soccer official and freelance sports journalist Padraig Harnett. ‘Christmas in Killarney’ is an Irish-American Christmas song written by John Redmond, James Cavanaugh, and Frank Weldon in 1950. It was made famous by Crosby, who recorded it on October 1, 1951. Next year would mark the 70th anniversary of Crosby’s recording and that presents a perfect opportunity to re-introduce the song to a wider Killarney audience. Padraig says the song could be better used to both promote Killarney and, as part of next year’s Christmas in Killarney festival, a world-record attempt should made for the most people singing the

carol at the one time. He was inspired after watching a Christmas video produced by the Holy Cross Mercy School in town which featured the song as its backing track. “Not everyone listens to Bing Crosby, especially younger people,” he told the Killarney Advertiser. “Not every town can say it has a world famous Christmas song written about their town. Why not get all our musicians together on a stage in a car park and get everyone in town to dress in Santa hats and sing-along. If everyone gave a fiver it could be towards a charity. I accept there may be copyright issues with the song so maybe the time is right to launch a search for a new Killarney Christmas song.” Padraig accepts that his idea is not possible this year, but wants to plant the seed in the run up to Christmas ahead of a better plan to carry it off next year. Descendants of the late Crosby attended the first-ever Christmas in Killarney festival.

Aoibhe is dreaming of a white Christmas

A 19-year-old who is currently living and working in Killarney is dreaming of a white Christmas and has recorded a version of the popular song. | By Michelle Crean Aoibhe O’Connor, who a third year student studying primary teaching in Mary Immaculate College works in The Killarney Park Hotel at the weekends recorded 'White Christmas' in Little Dylan Studios, Faha with producer Brendan O’Connor. She explained to the Killarney Advertiser this week that she wanted to record an upbeat, fun version of this well-known Christmas classic which she feels they captured in the studio in order to lift peoples' spirits in the current climate. "Shooting the video in Killarney was the most obvious place to do this with its beautiful lights and festive atmosphere," Aoibhe said. "I really enjoyed working with Lucas Machowski, who is not only professional but fun and easy to work with. Deck the Halls features in the opening of the video which has now become part of Killar-

ney’s Christmas tradition and I’d like to thank Liam O’Rourke and Tom Lucey for their co-operation." From a very young age Aoibhe has been interested in music and performance. "I attended Fiona Crowley’s Stage School from the age of five and had vocal training with Nicola and Gavan Ring for two years in Cahersiveen. Since then I have performed in various musicals both in school and with the Killarney Musical Society. I have had the opportunity to sing backing vocals for local musicians such as Tom Lucey, Michael Cunningham as well as Tracey and Ashley Kerins. I am currently available for wedding ceremonies and I am extremely lucky to have lots of bookings for 2021." Aoibhe has also released a version of 'The West’s Awake' which is available to stream on Apple Music and Spotify. "My video for 'White Christmas' is available to view on my social media platforms on Facebook, YouTube and Instagram."

tion will involve our team going forward to an exhibition in Croke Park at which the final five schools will be selected to win the Angus calves," Ber O'Connor, TY coordinator said. "This event usually occurs the second week of March, but with the current situation, it will most likely be moved to the second half of April with the Croke Park venue subject to change also."

Concerns on low hotel occupancy in Kerry for December | By Sean Moriarty Latest figures released by the Irish Hotels Federation (IHF) show the massive challenge facing the hospitality sector in Kerry. Over 3,500 people are employed locally in the hotel or allied trades sector. County-wide this figure increases to over 15,000. The latest IHF figures have raised further concern for the sector, following months of lockdown and a lack of consumer confidence as a result of pandemic-related restrictions. Inter-county travel is prohibited until today (December 18) but hotel operators still need to invest significant amounts to comply with current regulations. The decimation of lucrative Christmas party business is also causing concern to hoteliers and restaurateurs. Chair of the IHF Kerry branch, Bernadette Randles says that occupancy levels are expected to be 21 percent in the South West. Ms Randles says that hotels continue to operate under severe restrictions resulting in historically low room bookings in the lead up to Christmas. This is having a knock-on effect on food and beverage revenues.

URGENCY

Ms Randles called on the Government to review the enormous shortcomings in the COVID-19 Restrictions Support Scheme

(CRSS) as a matter of urgency as many hotels project revenue drops in excess of 75 percent. “Currently accommodation providers can only accept bookings from within their county, which represents only a very small proportion of hotel accommodation at this time of year. The result is that, in order to comply with Government restrictions, accommodation providers are required to restrict the vast majority of their usual customer base from accessing their premises. This is having an enormous impact, leading to a collapse in turnover. Surely a 75 percent reduction in turnover due to the Government specifically not allowing people leave their county is exactly the type of devastating situation that the CRSS was intended to support?” she said. “Public health is the number one priority. We support the Government’s aim of reopening the country safely. However, hotels and guesthouses continue to be disproportionately impacted by Government restrictions with disastrous implications for revenue and related employment within our sector. We are seeking a level playing field and are calling on the Government to reconsider their approach to the operation of the CRSS so that further damage is not done to the sector. Pre-COVID, tourism in Kerry, of which hotels are a key component, supported 15,700 jobs and generated €592m in local revenues,” says Ms Randles.

Glenflesk flood plan will cause the "world of problems” A plan to raise the height of the N22 near Glenflesk, in an effort to avoid flooding in the area, will cause further problems, according to Cllr Maura Healy-Rae.

GENEROUS: Businessman Paul Fitzgerald (right) making a generous donation to the Christmas in Killarney fund with Paul Sherry, Killarney Chamber of Tourism and Commerce (centre) and Barry O’Connor, Paul Fitzgerald and Son.

Donation captures the real spirit of Christmas

The true spirit of Christmas was very much in evidence in Killarney this week when a big-hearted local businessman made a very generous and unsolicited donation to the Christmas in Killarney festival committee. Killarney Chamber of Tourism and Commerce officials were thrilled to receive the contribution from Paul Fitzgerald of Paul Fitzgerald and Son Stone and Building Supplies who wanted to contribute to the rising cost of decorating the town for the festive season. In the enforced absence of the colourful Santa parades this year, the committee has invested heavily in feature glass marquees to showcase some of the spectacular floats that usually take to the streets for the bumper parades. The displays caught eye of Paul Fitzgerald and, in the true spirit of the season that’s in it, he decided to pledge his financial support. “It never ceases to amaze me how wonderful this town looks every Christmas and I could see that a very special effort had been made this year,” said the Coolcaslagh based businessman. “Being in business, I knew the effort of the committee would not come without expense so I felt compelled to offer what financial support I could,” he added. Paul Sherry President of Killarney Chamber of Tourism and Commerce said all involved in the Christmas in Killarney initiative were bowled over when the call came through from Paul Fitzgerald. “Every year the business community of

Killarney steps up to the mark and provides financial assistance to the festival. This year, given the difficult circumstances, we were reticent about asking our supporters to contribute but, as was alluded to at our recent AGM, we have had no choice but to seek that support,” said Mr Sherry. Close on €25,000 has been invested in additional Christmas lights and repairs this year and a further €20,000 has been spent showcasing the floats in marquees. Additionally, a very significant sum of money was invested by the Killarney Tidy Towns Committee to deliver the spectacular new lighting features at the top of High Street and outside the courthouse while Kerry County Council installs the town lighting every year. “Even if the Christmas in Killarney committee was to standstill and do nothing each year, there would be a requirement to raise at least €20,000,” Paul Sherry said. “We have gone for broke this year, despite the difficulties, and I am hopeful that, as in years past, the business community in Killarney will come to the rescue and support our efforts. The Killarney Chamber were so delighted with Paul Fitzgerald’s donation and we take the opportunity to thank him and his staff for their kind gesture,” he added.

At this week’s Kerry County Council meeting she tabled a motion asking Kerry County Council and the Transport Infrastructure Ireland (TII) to outline plans for the improvement of the N22. She told the meeting that there is widespread concern that the road will be further raised in the Glenflesk area which could ultimately contribute to additional flooding. “The residents fear that their homes, lands and property will be flooded if the road is raised further and that a plan that prepares for the 100 year flood, could adversely affect these residents every day in between that period," Cllr Healy-Rae said. She also stated that surface road water damaging entrances and property is a burden that residents endure all over the county and is where much of councillors allocation is spent and worries that the raising of the N22 will bring a whole other world of problems. KCC responded by outlining how the

N22 has become flooded near Garries Bridge, Glenflesk specifically in December 2015 when the road was impassable. As a result of this event a flood study was commissioned to examine the River Flesk catchment area and to identify flood alleviation options which could ensure that the N22 national primary road would be serviceable during severe weather events. Cllr Healy-Rae highlighted that this study was done prior to the clearing of the river, which took place following the securing of a visit from then Minister Kevin ‘Boxer’ Moran by Deputy Danny Healy-Rae and a subsequent deputation brought to the Killarney Municipal District by Cllr HealyRae. She added that the clearing of the river has been a tremendous success and deemed so by the residents of the area and is something that must be done more routinely. She also called for revisions or alterations to be made to the flood study as a result of clearing the river. KCC outlined that the option to raise the N22 in a flood neutral manner is being assessed further and the outcome of this assessment will be presented to the members of Killarney Municipal District in 2021.

RTÉ’s early Christmas present to Kerry Parents and Friends | By Sean Moriarty Kerry Parents and Friends Association (KPFA) has been allocated €28,913 by Community Foundation for Ireland as a result of the RTÉ Does Comic Relief national fundraiser.

SING-ALONG: Students from Killarney Community College have recorded a song to raise funds for those in need in the town. Pictured are music teacher Joanna Hughes with three of her performers, Rachel Griffin, Jack Ryan Brain and Teegan O'Sullivan.

Choir brings Christmas cheer

Students are singing from the same music sheet - although had to record separately in small pods - as a fundraiser for local charity. | By Michelle Crean The voices of 22 Killarney Community College students have been combined and sound amazing with their version of the 1985 classic 'We Are The World'. Working with Killarney Lions Club Christmas Food Appeal recently and lack of choir practice and performance due to COVID inspired the young singers to come up with the idea. "Unfortunately due to COVID the Killarney Community College choir have not performed as often as they would have liked to," music teacher Joanna Hughes said. "This time of year they usually would have been preparing for their Christmas service or carol singing in town. Instead

they came up with the novel idea of recording 'We Are The World' with the aid of Tony O'Flaherty recording studios. 22 students can be heard in one voice! You can hear it on the school website, Facebook page and Instagram with a GoFundMe link attached for Killarney Lions Club in the hope of helping the less fortunate this Christmas and supporting them through these difficult times." Recording was done in a day, she added. "It took a day to record, and logistically it was quite difficult as all 22 could not be in the same room so we had to record in small pods and individually," she said. "We are delighted with the result, we hope it raises awareness of such a brilliant cause and hope it brings some Christmas cheer to anyone that listens to it."

Nationally, over €5.8 million was raised to help children with disabilities, people living with illness as well as victims of domestic violence. In total 672 grants were handed out nationally, thanks to Comic Relief and while KPFA was one of many Kerry recipients, it was the only group in the Killarney area to get funding. The KPFA allocation was the highest amount handed out to the 88 Munster based charities. KPFA has branches and living quarters all over the county, but its training and

administrative headquarters are on Port Road, in Killarney. The RTÉ money is specifically for IT enhancement projects and something the management of KPFA has greatly welcomed. “The first people this will help is the people we support,” CEO Marie Linehan told the Killarney Advertiser. “We have being trying hard to digitally connect all our services. With this funding, the people we support can log on to a cookery class or connect with their own friends in different parts of the county. It is especially important in these times when not everyone is in a position to attend our day-care services.” Other Kerry facilities to benefit from the joint Community Foundation for Ireland/RTÉ scheme include Recovery Haven Kerry Cancer Support House who received €3,000 and Castleisland Day Care Centre who got €5,000.

Memorial walk to honour much loved Killarney lady | By Michelle Crean Cancer care charities have been badly impacted by COVID-19 so Killarney locals are planning to do what they can to help. To honour the late Margaret O'Connor from Kilbrean, Killarney and formerly of Tournanough, who sadly passed away in August this year, family and friends are planning a 10km walk in her honour. Unlike previous walks where locals could gather together, the 'Margaret O'Connor Memorial Walk' doesn't have a specific date due to the current restrictions on social gatherings. However, the organisers are asking those wishing to take part over the Christmas period to do so within their own family bubbles. "Margaret passed away on August 9, this year," one of the organisers Paddy O'Sullivan, a family friend told the Killarney Advertiser. "She was a great person, very popular and well-known in dancing circles all over the country. Therefore the organisers are asking people to walk 10km with family or in a safe bubble any day, any place over the Christmas season." Margaret was cared for in her final weeks in the Palliative Care Unit at University Hospital Kerry. In appreciation for the wonderful love and care she received they plan to make a donation to the Palliative Care Unit. A temporary account has been opened in Killarney Credit Union for donations and the account will remain open until

January 15, 2021. At that stage all funds received will be transferred directly to Palliative Care, Tralee. "No hospice walks could be held and Daffodil Day was cancelled as well as several other local fundraisers. This wonderful facility in Tralee needs your support more than ever." Details for donations are as follows: Account Name: Margaret O'Connor Memorial, IBAN: IE73KIRO99219319550985, BIC: KIROIE21. "Please support. Thank you and have a very happy and safe Christmas."

JUMPER DAY: Pupils from Anabla National School took part in a Christmas jumper day last Friday for charity.

Caring act by Anabla pupils | By Michelle Crean It's the time of the year to think of others - and pupils in Anabla National School did just that this week - by carrying out a number of acts of kindness. Pupils at Anabla NS this week prepared care packs for the residents of Our Lady of Lourdes Nursing Home in Kilcummin. Families generously donated various items including toiletries, books, puzzles, chocolates and craft items which will be put to good use by the residents. Care packs will be quarantined on arrival at the nursing home and distributed

after the quarantine period by staff, explained principal Patricia O'Shea. "Pupils are also creating pieces of art for that extra special personal touch for the residents. Senior pupils would usually perform Christmas carols every year for the residents and as this could not take place this year this was a way of doing something special for the residents." The school also took part in Christmas jumper day on Friday last raising funds for the nursing home. "The school would like to thank our parents for supporting both causes generously and wish everyone a happy Christmas and New Year."

GIVING GIFTS: Anabla National School pupils generously donated some gifts which will be given to the residents of Our Lady of Lourdes Nursing Home.

SPECIAL VISIT: The pupils in Kilcummin NS were delighted to get a special visit by the Gardai this week as a thank you for their generosity with An Garda Síochána's 'Christmas Together' campaign.

Gardai say thanks to Kilcummin pupils After a generous campaign to help older residents in the community, members of An Garda Síochána paid a special visit to pupils as a 'thank you' on Tuesday. | By Michelle Crean Garda Brendan O’Donovan turned up to thank the pupils and staff of Kilcummin NS for their wonderful support towards the An Garda Síochána 'Christmas Together' campaign over the last few weeks. "We were delighted to receive the Gardai for a socially distanced visit," principal Gillian Sheehan told the Killarney Advertiser. "It was a lovely gesture to call to the participating schools to express thanks for the time and effort that went into

the cards and gift preparations. As mentioned previously, our senior pupils in the school created personal Christmas cards for residents in two neighbouring nursing homes and families donated gifts for the residents and staff. Garda Brendan accompanied our First and Second Class to the Our Lady of Lourdes Nursing Home for some carol singing last week. He was accompanied by Garda Jim O’Mahony and Garda Shane McCarthy on his visit to the school this week. Their gratitude meant so much to the children, who entertained their visitors with outdoor Christmas carols and dancing!"

For her efforts, Alice takes the top prize of an art box for the 0-3 years category. CHI ran this competition for its members and entrants hailed from all over Ireland. The competition was broken into five different categories based on the participants’ ages. The competition was judged by two professional artists, Claire O'Connor and Áine Macken who volunteered their time towards the project. “We really loved the message of Alice’s picture," Judge Claire O'Connor said. "The drawing of the snowmen, with the adult snowman wearing a mask, reminds us that every community must act to keep each other safe and we all have our part to play. It’s a fine use of art to explain a very important message for people of all ages.”

Minister opens new access road and car park at Tomies Wood The Minister of State for Housing, Local Government & Heritage, Malcolm Noonan TD, visited Killarney National Park on Friday and officially opened the new access road and car park to the ever-popular Tomies Wood, among other engagements. “It is great to see this project completed,” the Minister said. “Tomies Wood and the Tomies Loop have always been popular as a recreational walk, and in providing an official car park and road to the wood, the National Parks and Wildlife Service have enabled a better experience for all our visitors.” The Minister planted an Oak tree to mark the occasion. “This project would not have been possible without the Outdoor Recreation Infrastructure Scheme and I would like to thank the Department of Rural and Community Development for all their assistance.”

BLUE POOL TRAIL

Following the opening of the new road, Minister Noonan spent time discovering the Blue Pool Trail which is under development at Cloghereen in conjunction with the Kerry office of NCBI and Down Syndrome Kerry. The Pool Wood Trail has been completely resurfaced, new guide ropes and braille discs have been installed along with universal seating and picnic furniture. Minister Noonan then visited Killarney House and Gardens to raise the Green Flag and view an international children’s art exhibition in the grounds of Killarney House. The Project 2020 Le Chéile exhi-

bition was started by the Irish Museum of Childhood online earlier this year. It has gone on to be nominated at the Family Friendly Museum Awards 2020. The first outdoor staging of this project is in Killarney House, before it transfers to Nepal for the next outdoor exhibition in January.

NATIONAL PARK VISIT

Later in the day, the Minister viewed the renovations by the National Parks and Wildlife Service to Derrycunnihy Church and saw the considerable repair and conservation works undertaken there in 2020. This was a partnership project between Built Heritage and the National Parks and Wildlife Service (NPWS). The Minister commented that it was “beautifully situated” on the ‘Ring of Kerry’ route, adjacent to Galway’s Bridge, and seen by many thousands of visitors

travelling through Killarney National Park. Derrycunnihy Church is a protected structure, which contains a protected maternity roost of the Lesser Horseshoe Bat, in addition to a pair of barn owls and swallows. “This project was aimed at repairing the historic structure of the church and sustaining and enhancing the protected Lesser Horseshoe Bat roost,” the Minister said. “I am thrilled that the success of these conservation works has been proven by the fact that a number of bats have already returned to the roost!” The Minister concluded his visit to the National Park by expressing his gratitude for the continued commitment shown by the staff of the National Parks and Wildlife Service. “The staff of the NPWS who managed these projects that I have seen are essential workers, and remained on duty throughout the COVID-19 emergency, keeping the Park open to the local residents, while all the time promoting safety and continuing to work tirelessly with the day to day work of the park and of major projects, I am proud to work alongside them."

WEDDING

Magical atmosphere for Lora and Garry There was a wonderful festive feel for one couple's special day last Saturday as they gathered with family for their wedding day.

WEDDING OF THE WEEK

Lora Murphy from Cullina Lower, Beaufort and Garry Doyle from Borris in Co Carlow tied the knot in St Mary's Church in Beaufort before having a small celebration in The Great Southern Killarney. Lora's parents Tommy and Mary, and Garry' s mom Ann were delighted to join in on the big day's celebrations. Lora's brother Bryan Murphy and Garry's sister Eileen Cahill stood as witnesses. Due to travel restrictions Lora's nieces couldn't attend but instead acted as virtual flowersgirls. "It was so Christmassy," Lora told the Killarney Advertiser. "It was really magical because of Christmas. We were also very lucky with the

weather as it stayed dry. We were married by Monsignor Dan Riordan, dad's cousin. Our church singer was Aoibhe O'Connor who sang beautifully." Although the couple, who got engaged in July, had planned a small intimate wedding, their original date in October had to be postponed to last week. This meant cutting back in numbers from 50 to 25. "We had it originally booked for October and we would have had nieces and nephews, and aunts and uncles would have been allowed to attend. It's hard when you have to restrict it." The couple are now enjoying a few days respite in Sheen Falls Lodge.

Tributes to Charley Pride – the legendary country singer who loved Killarney Tributes have been paid locally to country singer Charley Pride who died from COVID-19 complications on Saturday. | By Sean Moriarty One of the all-time-greats of country and western music, he was best known for such songs as ‘Kiss An Angel Good Morning’ and ‘Anybody Going To San Antone?’ and recorded 52 Billboard Top 10 Country Hits. He was a ground-breaking artist and everywhere he went he made history. He was one of the first black Americans to make it as a country singer during the 1960s when skin-prejudice was still rife, but he joked his way to success by telling an audience in Detroit: “Friends, I realise it's a little unique, me coming out here — with a permanent suntan —

to sing country and western to you. But that's the way it is”.

ON THE KILLARNEY STAGE

The Mississippi-born singer and professional baseball player even made history in Killarney. He was the first international artist to perform on stage at the Gleneagle INEC Arena back in 2000 – the night the now landmark entertainment venue opened to the public and ahead of schedule. “He had been booked by Jim Aiken of Aiken Promotions to play in The Gleneagle Ballroom as part of his Irish tour. But such was the demand for tickets that our dad Maurice decided to speed up construction work on The Gleneagle INEC Arena which was near completion at the time,” Gleneagle Group MD Patrick O’Donoghue told the Killarney Advertiser. “We say he was the first ‘international’ artist to take to the stage because local legend Dermot Flynn performed as Charley’s support that night. Two legends who held Killarney firmly in their hearts.” That was on March 3, 2000 - but one local man, Dermot Moriarty of Radio Kerry’s ‘Sounds Country’ fame, recalls it like it was yesterday. “I remember the late Maurice O’Donoghue sitting in the front row, puffing on his pipe. He had a lot to be proud of that night,” Dermot said. Legendary local politician and TD, the

late Jackie Healy-Rae, was there too. “We tipped Charley off but he got it wrong,” said Dermot. “Charley went on stage and said "I hear we have a congressman in the house – can we put our hands together for Jackie-Ray Healy”. Jackie got a standing ovation for that one.” The politician and the musician became friends and Jackie was often invited backstage after a show where they both enjoyed conversation and craic. “His biggest Kerry fan had to be Jackie Healy-Rae who never missed a show. Charley always dedicated a song or two to Jackie and his family,” added Patrick. Charley often stayed at the Killarney Park Hotel when he was in town and that revealed another trait in his char-

AN ORDINARY MAN

“I got a call one time from Noreen McSweeney in the Park Hotel and she told me Charley was sitting on his own in the bar if I wanted to come down and meet him,” added Dermot. “But that was so typical, he had no bodyguards or excess hanging off him – he remained a very ordinary man.” Even in the autumn of his career, Charley Pride never forgot Killarney and included the INEC Arena in his European Farewell tour of 2012. “Charley continued to attract record crowds right up until his last concert here in 2012. People came to Killarney from all over Ireland just to hear him sing,” Patrick added.

Kids Christmas market brings great joy | By Michelle Crean There were plenty of treats at one playgroup this week as they held a very special Christmas market with proceeds going to charity. Children, staff and parents at Raheen Montessori Playgroup in Headford understand that COVID has this year made it a very challenging time for everyone. So they instead decided to try to keep spirits high and to be as positive as they possibly can and with three and fouryear-olds this is not a difficult feat as their innocence and joy is heart-lifting,

Fundraiser for frontline workers at UHK Sneem locals are calling all GAA, athletic, golf, swimming, walking clubs, Men's Sheds - in fact everyone, to help them raise funds for University Hospital Kerry (UHK). | By Michelle Crean On Monday they began their campaign and are asking people to walk, run, cycle, swim, play golf or whatever sport you like, over a six week period. "We are trying to get to 5,000 kilometres," Louis Moriarty, who is organising this fundraiser, said. 'We're asking you to record how many kilometres you have done and get funding of 1c or €1 per kilometre - everything

helps. Our aim is to raise €10,000 for these wonderful people who have worked so hard during the COVID crisis." If you wish you can post to their Facebook page: Sneem Hotel. "Because our parents haven’t been able to enter the playgroup premises we decided to organise a COVID-friendly outdoor Christmas market that would involve them with their children," she told the Killarney Advertiser. "In preparation for it, the children baked gingerbread cookies, and made Christmas tree ornaments, handmade Christmas cards and Christmas photo frames. We were able to link this event on the day with our annual Christmas charity fundraiser which this year was for Kerry Act of Kindness."

Kerry company selected for €17m national startup programme Kerry's RDI Hub has been selected by the Irish Government to run Ireland’s national startup accelerator programme, the NDRC. Alongside Dogpatch Labs, Portershed Galway, and Republic of Work Cork they’ll deliver accelerator and pre-accelerator programmes to globally ambitious entrepreneurs across every county in Ireland. They will deliver mentorship-driven accelerator and pre-accelerator programmes, and pre-seed funding to entrepreneurs across Ireland. They will also invest in globally-focused, ‘high impact’ startups, to create world-class internationally scalable Irish companies. Established in 2006, the NDRC is a Government initiative to invest in very young digital enterprises and startups. Following a competitive process, Dogpatch Labs, supported by its partners RDI Hub Kerry, Republic of Work Cork and Portershed Galway has been awarded the €17m contract to manage the service for the next five years. Ignite, which is the UK’s most active regional accelerator, also supported the bid and will provide international

support and knowledge sharing with the network. RDI Hub based in Killorglin is backed by Fexco, Institute of Technology, Tralee and Kerry County Council. A first of its kind, RDI Hub focuses on commercialisation of innovation and research in the technologies’ sectors and helps both indigenous and international start-ups and corporates scale their business. The new NDRC programmes will take place in Kerry, Cork, Dublin and Galway, with applications opening in Q1 2021. “This will ensure the best investors, advisors, researchers and technologists are accessible to all our globally ambitious entrepreneurs, regardless of where those entrepreneurs are in the country,” Liam Cronin, CEO RDI Hub, Kerry said. Startups have faced a challenging year, with COVID-19 impacting funding levels significantly. In response RDI Hub launched Founder’s Circle with Scale Ireland supporting over 100+ founders solve problem together.

Optimism for the future as 2021 hotel recruitment launched Despite the significant impact on the hotel and hospitality sector due to the restrictions introduced because of COVID-19, the hotel industry in Killarney is still looking forward to 2021. This week saw South Kerry Development Partnership (SKDP) launch their third recruitment fair for the sector. The 2021 event will be one with a twist however as it is currently planned in a virtual format. Part of SKDP’s SICAP programme, the event will still aim to assist job seekers and employers in the hotel sector with vacancies to meet in a more informal setting. It still plans to offer both the jobseekers and the employers the opportunity to meet a large range of potential employers and employees on the same day which has proven to be a key factor in the event's success. SKDP Enterprise Officer Joanne Griffin, who organises the event, said that hotels she has spoken to are optimistic with regard to the 2021 tourist season and many are already well advanced in planning for the new season. “The last recruitment event took place

just before the significant disruption to the sector due to COVID, and while it was a tremendous success from the point of view of both the hotels and those seeking employment, circumstances curtailed the actual number of positions filled,” Joanne said. “Many hotels are now however actively recruiting to fill a broad range of positions for the 2021 season. It is likely that a significant number of roles will be available as some people who previously worked in the sector many have taken up employment in other sectors of the economy due to the COVID crisis." Applications from jobseekers who wish to take part in the event will open early in 2021. A significant number of the hotels in Killarney have already committed to taking part and any other hotels in the greater Killarney area who are interested in the 2021 event are invited to register their interest now. “If they are interested they can simply contact me by email at jgriffin@skdp. net or 087 6152660 so that we can get them involved.”

CONTRACT: The RDI Hub team Reidín O'Connor (Member and Community Manager), Liam Cronin (CEO), and Fionnuala O'Callaghan (Operations Manager) have secured a contract to run State-backed start-up accelerator, NDRC.

COVID-19 Vaccination Strategy announced Minister for Health, Stephen Donnelly TD, has this week announced the National COVID-19 Vaccination Strategy, which outlines Ireland’s high-level plan for safe, effective and efficient vaccination of the population, while safeguarding continued provision of health and social care services. The National COVID-19 Vaccination Strategy, which was prepared by the High-Level Task Force on COVID-19 Vaccination, was signed off by Cabinet. The Government established the High-Level Task Force (HLTF) on COVID-19 Vaccination in November with the purpose of supporting the Department of Health and the HSE in developing the plan. The HLTF has also produced an implementation plan. This provides more detailed operational information and will be a ‘living document’, requiring regular revision and updating as the programme evolves.

A MATTER OF WEEKS

“After a very difficult year, we are hopeful that COVID-19 vaccines will be approved for use in Ireland in a matter of weeks," the Minister for Health said. "The National COVID-19 Vaccination Strategy announced means that we will be ready if

a vaccine passes the rigorous quality and safety tests by the European Medicines Agency. The scale of the COVID-19 vaccination programme will be bigger and more complex than previous vaccination programmes. It will play a central role in our exit from the pandemic. Over time it will allow us to return to reopen our society and to reconnect in the ways we once took for granted.” This Strategy is the result of the close cooperation that has taken place across Government, between his Department and the HSE, and with a wide range of key stakeholders.

THREE PHASES

The vaccines will be rolled out in three phases - the initial roll out, a mass rampup and open access. The highest priority groups, those over the age of 65 living in long-term care facilities and frontline healthcare workers in direct patient contact, will receive the vaccine first. Vaccines will be administered from longterm care facilities, hospitals, mass vaccination clinics, GP surgeries and community pharmacies. This will be done by qualified and trained healthcare workers, including hospital doctors, community medical officers, nurses, GPs and pharmacists.

GARDEN MAGIC

Gardening - By Debby Looney

Debby is available for advice and garden consultations, just call 086 6088156 or email barnhillky@gmail.com

There are hollies for every type of garden My favourite Christmas carol of all time is ‘The Holly and the Ivy’ – of course it is, it brings me outdoors! It is a beautiful song, celebrating holly and all the significance attached to it at Christmas. With that in mind, my article this week is about….holly. Generally it is an easy plant to grow, being hardy and evergreen. It prefers a moist, well drained spot, growing well in forests where the soil is rich in organic matter. As a young plant, I have found a bit of shelter helps to get it started. Almost all hollies are either male or female, and you will need both if you hope to get berries. The flower on the male plant will have more prominent stamens. Often there will be wild holly trees nearby, and all varieties will cross pollinate. Holly flowers in May and June, bearing small, waxy, four-petalled flowers, and is much loved by bees. There are four main types of holly, the common holly, Ilex aquifolium, with its glossy spiky leaves and red berries, is the most familiar. Ilex x meserveae Japanese holly, has similar, but blueish foliage. Ilex crenata, has smooth leaves and black berries, incidentally an ideal replacement for Buxus hedging, and Ilex cornuta Chinese holly can produce berries without male pollination. There are hollies for every type of garden, one of the smallest is Ilex cornuta rotunda, which will slowly grow to about 1m. Another slow growing variety is the appropriately named hedgehog holly which has spines even on top of its variegated leaves. ‘Golden Milkboy’ is one of my favourites, with a beautiful creamy shade of yellow variegation. ‘Silver Milkboy’ and ‘Silver Milkmaid’ reliably produce berries together, shown to full advantage against silvery variegated foliage. ‘J.C. van Tol' is a female shrub, quite a large, broad plant, fast growing and very reliable. She is self-fertile and produces an abundance of berries. The leaves are quite smooth and dark green. ‘Madame Briot’ is a fast growing female

shrub, with purple stems and a golden edge to the leaves. It seems to grow well in clay soil. Ilex koehneana is a small tree with large, horse chestnut tree shaped leaves. It is a beautiful specimen plant, producing yellow berries. It is still quite an uncommon plant, but well worth finding! Another yellow berried variety is I. ‘Amber’, or ‘Pyramidalis Fructu Luteo’. These both have green foliage and berry well. One of my favourites is the slow growing I. meserveae ‘Blue Maid’, which is a very hardy, dense, female shrub, producing an abundance of berries. ‘Blue Boy’ and ‘Blue Girl’ are also worth seeking out, as their foliage colour is just so pretty. A deciduous variety is I. verticillata, which produces masses of berries on winter-bare stems. It is a favourite with florists and often seen in bouquets. As you can see, many hollies are named for their gender, however, not so with ‘Golden King’ which is female, and ‘Silver Queen’ which is male… One male plant will pollinate several females, so there is no need to invest in a matching couple each time! This time of year will find me ‘pruning’ my hollies, they are ideal for flower arranging, wreath making and decorating, and often I cannot stop myself from (tunelessly!) humming my favourite carol, as I think of the long tradition and history associated with holly. I recently heard that they were long regarded as blessed and planted near homes to prevent fire. Scientists have now discovered that their spines act as mini-conductors, and so deflect lightening, preventing many house fires! I will end this piece by wishing you all a wonderful holiday, and to thank you for all the interest you have shown throughout the year. May 2021 bring us all a fruitful year!

Sonas, was founded in 2001 by Seamus Crawley, John Mangan and Gerry Jordan with the establishment of Sonas Nursing Home, Cloverhill in Co. Roscommon. The company now has 12 homes and four retirement villages across seven counties. Seamus, who is the Chair of the company - and like John a qualified nurse – said they were delighted to welcome the residents and staff of Ashborough into the Sonas family.

“Ashborough, like Sonas, has a well-deserved reputation for providing high quality care to residents based on mutual respect and trust. We are really looking forward to getting to know the residents who have made the home their home and to working closely with their families who give us such great support. “I would also like to take this opportunity to thank every member of the dedicated team at Sonas Ashborough, led by Sheilah Climaco, for all their hard work at what is a very challenging time for everyone, but especially nursing homes.” John Mangan, Director at Sonas Nursing Homes Group added that "enhancing the lives of our residents is our priority". "All our homes are encouraged to maintain their own individual character based on their relationships and connections with the local community. Those relationships have never been more important and community solidarity has played a critical role in helping us to get through this challenging period. By investing and enhancing our homes, by working closely with residents’ families and the teams at Ashborough and our other homes, our aim is always to provide the best care possible to residents.” For more information on Sonas Nursing Homes or to enquire about a career at Sonas go to www.sonas.ie.

'The Lies You Told' is a compulsive psychological thriller from a master storyteller. In the playground it’s the law of the jungle but at the school gate, there are no rules at all… When Sadie Roper moves back to London, she’s determined to pick up the pieces of her shattered life. First, she needs to get her daughter settled into a new school - one of the most exclusive in the city. Next, she’s going to get back the high-flying criminal barrister career she sacrificed for marriage 10 years earlier - but nothing goes quite as planned. The school is not very welcoming to newcomers, her daughter hasn’t made any friends yet and the other mothers are as fiercely competitive as their children. Sadie immediately finds herself on the outside as she navigates the fraught politics of the school gate. But the tide starts to turn as Sadie begins to work on a scandalous, high-profile case that’s the perfect opportunity

to prove herself again, even though a dangerous flirtation threatens to cloud her professional judgment. And when Liza, queen of the school moms, befriends Sadie, she draws her into the heart of the world from which she was previously excluded. Sadie and her family start to thrive, but does this close new friendship prevent her from seeing the truth? Sadie may be keeping her friends close, but what she doesn’t know is that her enemies are closer still.

HEALTH & FITNESS Kerry Youth virtual choir Advice - By Brian Foley Brian is available for advice and fitness consultations, Call 087 403 0894 or email info@activate.ie • www.activate.ie

Some things are really hard to do on your own Time is my most precious resource. If I came across a genie in a bottle and got a wish, I’d ask for more time. More time to work, play, and with my family. Now, when I’m confronted with a problem, I ask myself how much time it will take to solve it - and then I ask myself if it’s worth my time. Then I make the decision that saves the most time. Another example: I recently had some renovations done. The work involved moving large sheets of plywood. I could have probably done this myself, moving the awkward sheets cumbersomely from A to B. But how efficient was this use of time? Once I got to point B (after smashing the plywood edges and breaking something!), I spent forever trying to measure and figure out where to cut. When I was confronted with the plywood problem, I didn’t try to muscle through it. Instead, I asked a friend for help. With a partner, it took 45 seconds to move the wood. It was easy and I got more work done in the time I had left. Plywood is just a “two-person lift” - at least if you want to get the job done quickly. Fitness is a lot like that - a two-person lift. You could definitely learn how to lose weight, get stronger or tone up. You could buy some books, take some courses, make a plan and start training. But doing that will be a lot of work, and many people who start on that plan quit

before they accomplish their goals. We hear about it all the time. That’s why so many people leave gyms: they don’t know what to do when they get there, they don’t get any results, and they stop going. We exist to save you time and help you accomplish health and fitness goals faster. We are going to help you move the plywood.

WHAT ARE YOUR GOALS?

You have something you want to accomplish with regard to health or fitness, but that goal might be a lot like moving my piece of plywood: a time-consuming and frustrating task, maybe even frustrating enough to make you abandon the goal. Don’t do that! Ask for help with this two-person lift. We can help you get stronger or faster. We can help you lose weight or body fat. We can help you score more goals or play better. We can help you play with your grandkids for longer or lower the numbers your doctor wants lowered. If you have some fitness goal but it’s buried under fear, trepidation and confusion, you owe it to yourself to ask an expert who can show you the path. With someone to help you, things will seem much easier, and everything will move faster. I know because plywood is really hard to move alone and really easy to move with a partner. Same deal with fitness but we have partners for you. You can talk to one by visiting www.activate.ie/free-intro.

celebrates Christmas To celebrate Christmas, the Diocese of Kerry has embarked on a new and exciting venture, by forming a Youth Virtual Choir which they streamed online this week. Over the month of November, the Diocese sent out word to all parishes, post-primary schools and youth choirs inviting as many young people as possible to take part and they received an amazing response with up to 40 young people involved ranging from 15 to 30-years-old. "The song is a piece entitled ‘Immanuel,’ composed by Michael Card, an American Christian singer-songwriter," Tomás Kenny from the choir said. "The lyrics touch on the realities, hardships and difficulties people face in their everyday lives and offers great hope and joy, especially in the refrain, ‘Immanuel, God is with Us’. This is the central message of the Christmas season: God is with us always." A Diocesan Youth Ministry initiative hosted by the Diocesan Youth Steering Team, the group come from school choirs, folk groups and parish choirs from across the diocese. "Since lockdown last March, choirs and music groups have not been able to partake in choral or group singing. However, a number of the singers taking part in this project were kept busy in their own

parishes through the ministry of the Cantor. Some of the singers have led the online congregations for Sunday Masses, enhancing the Mass and enabling people to sing safely from their homes." It has been a difficult time for all musicians, singers and school choirs, he added. "This initiative presents an opportunity for young people, who would not normally sing together, to take part and celebrate Christmas in virtual unison and harmony." The video was released on Wednesday but is available to view online - just Google Diocese of Kerry YouTube. It will also be found on the diocesan website: dioceseofkerry.ie and diocese of Kerry Facebook. People can also follow this story on Instagram – youthDoK."

The award was made by nationwide petrol retailer the Inver Group and Foley’s Spar in Fossa. Each participating petrol station is given funding to support local causes in their catchment area.

Foley’s Spar decided to donate their allocation to a new STEM programme at the school. “STEM in primary schools is one of the up and coming curriculum and, especially the technology side of it, we have seen this year how people had to adapt very quickly,” new school principal John Burke told the Killarney Advertiser. “Usually we would take the children out on field days, but all that is stopped now due to COVID, so this will help us bring it more in-house.”

Students say "Go raibh maith agaibh" On Friday, the school community at St Brigid’s paused and said #GRMA "Go raibh maith agaibh" to everyone in their school community who has worked so hard to keep school safe since it reopened last August.

CARING: Second Year students from St Brigid's Secondary have joined in the season of giving by donating care packs to a Kerry charity this week.

Dignity packs donated to domestic abuse charity | By Michelle Crean Second Year students from St Brigid's Secondary have joined in the season of giving by donating care packs to a Kerry charity this week. After completing coursework on active citizenship, obligations and responsibilities and human rights, the girls thought of others who may find this time of year difficult, and got to work. This Christmas, as part of their CSPE work, the students decided to make dignity packs and donate them to Kerry

Adapt Refuge Centre. Catherine Casey, General Manager of the Tralee based charity, collected the packs from the students on Friday. “We made the packs to support and provide families whose lives were dramatically changed because of domestic violence/abuse. In the packs we ensured to include products for self-care and essential hygiene products. We studied human dignity which inspired us to try our best to help the people who are not given the same rights as us," student Saoirse O'Sullivan said.

This included students, teachers, principals, parents, SNAs, caretakers, bus drivers and everyone in between! "We wanted to celebrate the enormous work that all members of the school community have done since we reopened this year to continue to keep our school open and in keeping everyone safe at the same

time," teacher Carol O'Dowd said. #GRMA Day was part of a nationwide initiative by the ISSU (Irish Secondary Student Union) and all schools were invited to join in the celebrations. As part of the day, a video of collective acknowledgement was aired from Ireland's political leaders, media and sports personalities. The President of Ireland Michael D. Higgins led the tributes, followed by An Taoiseach, Micheál Martin, Minister Simon Coveney, Ryan Tubridy, Paul O’Connell and even Dustin the Turkey made an appearance!! "Well done to everyone involved."

SAYING THANKS: Students Treasa O'Sullivan, Sinéad Collins, Breda Sweeney, Rosie Healy and Mahbuba Zzaman pictured in St Brigid’s paused and said "Go raibh maith agaibh" as part of the #GRMA in St Brigid's on Friday.

POSITIVITY: Representatives from Tobar Nua came to speak to the TY students about friendship and religion. The girls learned the qualities of a good friend and how to work together as a group to earn points for their team. Many fun filled games were played throughout the day which helped with their communication skills and how to come together and work as a team. They had a great day with Tobar Nua and learned so much about positive relationships and friendships.

FLOWER ARRANGING: On Friday, the TY students from St Brigid's spent some time getting crafty and decided to make centre pieces for Christmas.

NEW SKILLS: TY students at St Brigids have climbed to new heights with their stilt walking workshop. Gliondar, a theatre group from Galway, ran a very entertaining and exciting stilt walking workshop for TY students last week. The students had fantastic falls, great fun and learnt an interesting skill.

Archaeology of N22 Tralee bypass revealed in new book A new publication, which explores the archaeology of the N22 Tralee Bypass, has been revealed in a brand new book. The publication of 'In the Vale of Tralee – the archaeology of the N22 Tralee Bypass' describes the remarkable discoveries that were made along the route of the bypass by archaeologists from Rubicon Heritage Services and Irish Archaeological Consultancy in 2010 and 2011. The construction of the bypass provided a rare opportunity to explore the rich heritage of North Kerry through large-scale archaeological investigation, with the excavations revealing evidence of over 6,000 years of human life in the Tralee hinterland, from early prehistory to modern times.

Tumbleweeds trap towns people Australian residents were shocked to discover that they couldn't leave their houses due to 14 feet high tumbleweeds!

DISCOVERIES

Among the discoveries were the remains of a building in Manor East erected by some of the first farmers to settle in the River Lee Valley, as well as circular houses of the Bronze Age in Ballingowan, Knockawaddra Middle and Ballynabrennagh, and Iron Age cremation burials in Manor East and Ballinorig West. Of particular note was the monumental avenue of timber posts uncovered in Ballingowan which may have been the site of sacred ceremonial processions during the late Neolithic/Early Bronze Age. Another highlight was the discovery of a previously unknown bivallate (double ditched) ringfort in Ballinorig West. This was probably the defended homestead

of a wealthy farmer or local lord during the early medieval period. Glimpses of Tralee’s more recent past were revealed by the excavation of the brick-making sites and limekilns uncovered on the project, while the abandoned cottages uncovered in Lismore attest to the devastating impact of the Famine in North Kerry. "We’ve always been very proud of our heritage in Tralee," Councillor Terry O’Brien, Mayor of Tralee, said.

"Our churches, castles and place names provide a strong connection to our medieval past and contribute to the pride we feel for our town." Their homes, in the Melbourne suburb of Hillside, were blocked up as a result of high winds which blew the gigantic tumbleweeds in their path. Known as the “hairy panic” - events of this nature are known in parts of Australia. Such was the extent of the event out in the yard of their homes that the residents' windows and doors were blocked up. One home owner, Claire Pigott, along with her family, cleared the yard one day, only to be thwarted by 68 mph winds carrying a new batch of tumbleweeds the next. The weeds are believed to have tumbled over from an unmaintained property outside of town, with residents claiming that the town refuses to help remove the mess.

vote, the hardcopy of these votes must arrive in the White House by this date. Remember how Trump and his colleagues tried to disrupt the main-in voting system by removing mail sorting machines and other dodgy moves? After that he is out the door on January 6 and the decision to walk out or be forcefully evicted will be entirely up to himself.

World's first air travel health passport launched British cyber technology company VST Enterprises (VSTE) has this week launched the world's first public ‘FIT TO FLY’ secure health passport designed for air travel.

Careful with the latest An Post scam ESET Ireland warns of an email imitating An Post, claiming victims have an undelivered package waiting for pickup, taking advantage of increased COVID and Christmas season online shopping trends.

An email, bearing the logotype and references to An Post is finding its way into Irish mailboxes, taking advantage of the fact that an increasing number of people are turning to online shopping. The email reads; 'Reminder: This email informs you that your shipment is still pending. Your package could not be delivered because no customs duty was paid. To confirm the shipment of the package click here'. The email is also equipped with other info which makes it look like it’s referencing an actual package, and lists the amount owed as €1.00. Upon clicking

where instructed, the victim is taken to a fake An Post website, hosted on a deceitful URL name ie-anpost.com (the actual An Post address is just anpost. com) and asked to enter all their card payment details, which are then transferred to the cybercriminals behind the scam for further abuse, while the victim is told to “Please wait while your request is being processed”. ESET Ireland recommends vigilance when it comes to online shopping and ordering, by making sure you shop with reliable and verified vendors. Also avoid clicking unknown links in such unsolicited emails or entering your payment card info on insecure sites. If you’re unsure about any similar email you receive, just ring the company in question and ask if they’ve sent you an email. An Post themselves are aware of such scams and offer warning and advice about them on their website as well.

The public, airlines and transport carriers, can download and use it for any form of COVID-19 testing and vaccination. It comes at a time when security over the use of bar codes and QR codes in airline travel has come under intense scrutiny following the cyber attack on the former Australian Prime Minister Tony Abbot. The wider threats of fake COVID-19 test certificates have also been prevalent with an alarming rise in the sales of fake certificates booming in Russia and the Middle East. “We are the first technology company in the world to have developed a secure, multipurpose, cross corporate and cross Government digital health passport that

does not rely on using bar codes or QR codes as its authentication technology," VSTE CEO Louis-James Davis, said. "Both bar codes and QR codes have huge potential security implications as they can be cloned and hacked." The cross border platform called V-Health Passport™ can be downloaded from the Apple App Store or Google Play.

Respect older peoples' wishes - says charity ALONE ALONE is asking that members of the public respect older peoples' wishes when it comes to receiving visitors into their homes and to respect their space when meeting up over the holiday season. ALONE understands that this has been a challenging year for many older people who have had to make sacrifices to protect themselves from the virus, while the organisation has also noted that older people are among groups considered to be at a high risk for COVID-19. “We understand that this has been a difficult year for older people across the country who have had to take extra precautions to protect themselves from the virus," Sean Moynihan, CEO of ALONE, said. "We are asking members of the public to consider the older people in their lives by respecting any concerns they may have surrounding the pandemic, and not pressuring them to attend social gatherings where they may feel anxious

or uncomfortable. It’s natural to want to see all of our friends and family at Christmas, but this year things are different, and we will all need to make some changes to safeguard the health and well-being of the older people in our lives.” The organisation is also encouraging older people to stay within a safe ‘bubble’ this Christmas, and to keep in touch via phone calls and socially distant visits to minimise the risk of contracting COVID-19. ALONE recently launched their Christmas campaign, which encourages members of the public to 'Give a Helping Hand' to the older people in their lives this Christmas. Contact ALONE if you have concerns about your own well-being, or the well-being of an older person you know. Their National Support Line is available seven days a week from 8am – 8pm on 0818 222 024. Further information can be found on www.alone.ie.

Counselling service to open every day over Christmas Telephone counselling and support service Connect has extended its hours during Christmas to open every evening from Wednesday, December 16 through until Sunday, January 3.

Connect is a free, confidential and professional telephone-based counselling and support service for adults who were abused in childhood and will open from 6-10pm each evening. People can call Connect for free at 1800 477 477. Callers will get to speak

with a trained counsellor who can listen and provide professional counselling and support. “Christmas is a particularly sensitive period in terms of public need for the service," Service Director, Marie Percival, said. "We want to ensure that we

are there for people if they need our support.” Connect’s normal opening hours, returning in January, are 6-10pm Wednesday to Sunday. More information at www.connectcounselling.ie

SIMPLY BEAUTIFUL

Beauty - By Jill O'Donoghue

Jill is available for advice and beauty consultations, at Killarney Toning & Beauty Studio. Call 064 6632966

Turn back time with a CACI Elite Synergy facial My favourite facial in the world is the CACI Elite Synergy facial. It doesn't only turn back time, it helps prevent premature ageing as well. It sticks to the foundations of beauty therapy and has never compromised the integrity of your skin and it works on a dynamic network of muscles, ligaments, circulation, lymphatic system to mention a few. Collagen and elastin production slows as we age, but with this new top of the range machine it helps increase production. Its new light therapy can reach further into the skin and stimulate growth and repair of collagen and elastin production. The CACI machine originated in hospitals for the repair of muscles affected by strokes, bell's palsy etc., which is where they discovered it was doing such an amazing job on the affected side of the paralysed face making it more youthful than the unaffected side. The latest CACI non-surgical facial tech-

nology combines the already award winning microcurrent SPED (Stimulations Photo Electrical Delivery) with LED light therapy. CACI achieves visible face lift results, helping tighten sagging muscles and skin, smoothing away fine lines and wrinkles. Already established as a highly effective anti-ageing treatment, CACI Synergy also offers solutions for problematic skin, targeting acne, scarring, rejuvenation and hydration. It gives your skin a real visible boost. A bespoke initial skin consultation will determine which treatment or combination of treatments are best suited for you. This is an advanced non-invasive facial treatment used for lifting and toning the facial muscles and the neck area. All 32 muscles of the face are gently manipulated and re-educated using a series of precise movements. Gravity is after us all - but this facial will certainly help slow it down. This also incorporates the latest LED jowl lift procedures, targeting muscle laxity around the jawline.

If you have been considering starting a new skincare routine or getting advice on where to start, call on Jill 064 6632966.

Free or subsidised college courses provide opportunities As the economy has adjusted to the impact of COVID-19, hundreds of thousands of people became unemployed temporarily. In late October, Minister for Further and Higher Education Simon Harris, announced that â‚Ź30 million would be allocated to the Jobs Stimulus Package to help to get people back to work, up-skill workers and build economic confidence. What this has meant in reality is the provision of 11,597 places on short modular courses together with 2,555 postgraduate places which are being offered in 32 higher education institutions nationally. Some courses will commence in January and many are currently being advertised by the Higher Education Institutions (HEIs) that will be providing them. Check their websites for course details and deadlines. Courses are open to those returning to the workforce, those in employment and recent graduates. All participants, with the exception of returners, will contribute 10% of the course cost. Those in receipt of DSP payments, including PUP, will be eligible to undertake part-time courses free of charge. Eligible applicants must be ordinarily resident in Ireland and must meet the nationality and EU residency rules as set out on https:// springboardcourses.ie/faq.

MODULAR COURSES

Modular courses are short (not more than 30 credits) and designed to be offered in a flexible manner to allow people to gain important skills without taking too much time away from the jobs market. Each module will be standalone so that participants can gain skills that are relevant and put them into practice immediately in the workplace but the modules are also accredited in such a way as to provide building blocks to a full qualification should the student so wish. The courses span across a broad range of subjects and represent a new route to life-long learning which is flexible enough to facilitate retraining while staying closely aligned to the workplace and they will be offered in a part-time mode in either blended or online format.

POSTGRADUATE SKILLS PROVISION

The 2,555 postgraduate places are available on courses in a wide variety of skills areas such as data analytics, natural and

environmental science, engineering, manufacturing and construction, tourism and hospitality, ICT, health and welfare including medical technology and social and behavioural sciences. Eligible participants must have at least a Level 8 qualification or equivalent prior to being accepted onto a course and other academic requirements will be determined by individual colleges. A complete list of courses can be found on www.hea.ie and further details on those courses can be found on the websites of the colleges and universities that are facilitating them. The initiative provides a great opportunity for people to either choose a new pathway in terms of career or to up-skill or retrain in their current area of employment. While much of the impact of COVID has been devastating on employment, this investment brings a much needed boost to those who have been effected by providing the chance to adapt to the changed and changing world of work in the midst and aftermath of a global pandemic.

Back to the future for Mazda TEST DRIVE:

The Killarney Advertiser’s Sean Moriarty was one of the first people in Ireland to drive the new Mazda MX-30, the first all-electric offering from the Japanese manufacturer.

The MX-30 only arrived at Ahern’s Mazda dealership earlier this month. Mazda Ireland has registered a handful of examples of the new car – for demonstration purposes – ahead of the car’s arrival to the Irish market very early next year. Last week’s test drive was several firsts tied into one occasion. It was my maiden attempt at driving an all-electric car and there was no better way to take the plunge than behind the wheel of the very latest electric car on the Irish market. After Sales Manager Barry Ryan give me a quick guided tour of the MX-30. I set off on a short test drive on roads near Castleisland. My first impression was the quality of the cabin but as Barry later explained this was part of Mazda’s bigger plan to move into

the sub-premium segment. The central console caught my eye as it was made of cork – something I had never before seen in any car – but there was good reason. Mazda are all for sustainability and a large portion of the new car is made from recycled material. The Mazda Motor Corporation began life as the Toyo Cork Kogyo in Hiroshima, Japan, January 30, 1920. It

took another 11 years before the company ventured into vehicle manufacturing but the cork dashboard in its newest car is a nice ‘back to the future’ feature that won’t go unnoticed by automotive historians. Another fantastic feature is the rear-door set up. Remember, the classic Mazda RX-8 sports car (2002 to 2012) and its rear outward hinged doors?

18.12.2020 Well, the new MX-30 rear doors also pay tribute to the legendary RX-8 – and another ‘back to the future’ attribute that will strike a chord with enthusiasts. Out on the road the car felt as normal as any petrol car, even under acceleration; the electric motor revs enough, and makes a comforting engine noise to remind the driver that they have increased velocity without it actually being intrusive to the cabin. The MX-30 scored the best possible adult occupant protection rating during tests earlier this year. Another brilliant safety feature on the car – and there are many – is the lane warning device. Instead of the usually, often irritating alarm bells, the MX-30’s steering wheel gets progressively heavier as it drifts out of the intended lane. The driver is immediately alerted to the fact that all is not right, allowing plenty of time for corrective counter-steering. To celebrate the launch of the new Mazda MX-30, a limited First Edition model will be available offering an extensive array of additional specification for a lower price. Ahern’s Mazda has also announced a range of offers to save motorists up to €2,000 on a new 211 Mazda with low finance rates across the range. The electrified Mazda range will be forefront of the savings with the Mild Hybrid Mazda 3 and Mazda CX-30 available with a €2,000 contribution and 4.9% APR on PCP and HP finance.

Makeover the heart of the home The kitchen is very often the most important room to would-be buyers. It has become the showpiece area of the home. Many of us spend a substantial part of our lives in the room that is often cited as the heart of the home. We don’t just cook in it, we do homework in it, watch television in it, often work from within it and we entertain in it. A full kitchen overhaul can cost a substantial amount of money so why not consider what small changes can be made to update the space. Makeover your kitchen with purpose by getting clear on your goals right from the start. A well-presented kitchen will always look, feel and smell clean and fresh. It will feel spacious, bright and welcoming. It will show signs of life but is never messy.

DEEP CLEAN

Start with a good deep cleaning, it is worth considering having a profession-

al cleaning job done; a sparkling clean kitchen is one that looks its best. Make sure your kitchen floor is sparkling clean, polish those floor tiles, mop the timber flooring.

ODOURS

Be aware of odours, make sure all rubbish, recycling and pet related items are removed before showing your home. Some well-placed air fresheners are welcome. Nothing turns off a potential buyer faster than bad smells.

PAINT

Consider a fresh coat of paint; a simple but cost-effective way of freshening up the space. Paint it a colour to compliment the worktops and cabinetry. If in doubt go with a crisp white.

WINDOWS

Make sure the windows are clean, inside and out. Consider removing any heavy window coverings or at least make sure

they are fully open for viewings.

WORKTOPS AND CUPBOARDS

Clear off the worktops, a toaster and a kettle/coffee machine are about the only items one should consider leaving on the worktop. Everything else should be out of sight. Polish any marble/quartz worktops so they are shining for viewings. Organise your cupboards, buyers will look inside. If your cabinets are overly stuffed it gives the impression there isn’t enough storage space in your kitchen.

SHELVING

If you have open shelving your goal should be to showcase how it can be useful and look great. Leave some open space on each shelf and only display matching sets of dishes/glasses.

CLEAN UP

Shine the kitchen tap, a simple but effective measure. Fix any leak while you are at it. Remove any old sponges and soap

TED HEALY | ASCSI ARICSDip AVEA DNG TED HEALY 11 New Street, Killarney, Co Kerry

containers and replace with nice looking hand soap and washing up liquid on a neat tray. Clean the hob, if a ceramic hob one should see their reflection in it. Remove old tea towels, they look awful. Add some colour with a fresh fruit bowel and/or some lovely freshly cut flowers. Continue to accessorise with a selection of well-presented cook books. And finally lighting, check each and every bulb is working. Perhaps consider upgrading your light fittings to ones with more lights.

Don’t believe the hype IPO mania took over Wall Street last week with Airbnb and DoorDash offering some respite from COVID specific news. Airbnb stole the headlines with its long-awaited stock market debut – with its shares 'technically' up 115% by close of business on their first day of trading, not bad for a company that has never made a profit. That surge left the travel firm with a market cap of almost 100 billion, an eye-watering valuation for a company with less than $4 billion in annual sales. Amid the IPO frenzy, two questions cropped up, the first of which was simply, 'What is an IPO?'. An IPO, or Initial Public Offering, is when

a private company first sells shares of the company to the public. From the date of IPO, the company will begin trading on a stock exchange such as the NASDAQ or NYSE. As investors saw headlines of triple-digit IPO returns, focus turned to understanding 'why can't I invest in the company at its IPO price?' Unfortunately, the reality is, the headline-grabbing IPO gains are not available to mere mortal retail investors. The media headlines will taunt you and suggest

that you missed out. But in a cruel Wall Street induced twist of faith, these gains typically fall into the hands of the privileged few. What is important to understand here is the difference between the offering price and the opening price. The offering price of an IPO is the price at which a company decides to sell, usually determined with the help of the investment bank underwriting the IPO. Initial stocks are typically distributed amongst large accredited investors and institutional investors the night before the IPO and purchased in large tranches. Meanwhile, the opening price is the price at which those shares begin to trade in the open market to public participants like you or me. This opening price is set by the supply and demand that surrounds the stock ahead of opening as buy and sell orders flood in. These orders are balanced against each other before determining the opening price. If the demand for shares exceeds the supply, you guessed it, shares open higher than the offering price and vice versa. In the case of Airbnb, a Black Friday-esque scramble saw demand significantly

outweigh supply. The original offering price was settled at $68 a share. However, investor demand for the company saw prices opened at $146. So while those in possession of the shares at offering price had more than doubled their money by the end of the day, the opening price actually trended lower, closing out the day 12% below its intraday high. With plenty more IPOs in the pipeline for 2021, be mindful of initial day exuberance. The larger institutions tend to be the big winners here, while many retail investors end up buying the froth. If you like the company as a long-term play, then by all means invest, but perhaps allow the lock-up periods of the original private shareholder's laps (90 to 180 days) before making your move.

Winter road safety tips As we are all aware, driving in winter conditions can be hazardous. You should only make journeys if they are absolutely necessary in bad weather. Keep a close watch for weather warnings and heed the advice of the emergency services. Before you travel, review your tyres and check the condition of your wiper blades. Keep water, blankets and a First Aid kit in your car for emergency situations.

DRIVING IN RAIN AND FLOODING

John Healy of Healy Insurances.

When roads are wet your stopping distance is doubled. Reduce your speed and maintain a safe distance from the vehicle ahead. If your vehicle skids on surface water, take your foot off the

accelerator. Don’t brake and use your gears to slow the car down. Do not attempt to drive through water if you don’t know how deep it is. If your car stalls in flood waters, leave your car and move yourself to safety.

DRIVING IN ICE AND SNOW

Clear snow from the roof of your vehicle as well as the windows. When moving off from a standstill, use second gear to minimise wheel spin. It can take up to 10 times longer to stop in icy conditions so always allow extra room between you and the vehicle in front. Stick to main roads as these are more likely to be gritted. Avoid braking suddenly, if you brake too hard and skid, pump the brakes gently and repeatedly. Drive in as high a gear as possible, maintaining low “revs” and a safe speed. Going down in gears will automatically reduce the speed output of the car. Reduce your speed but don’t completely

take your foot off the accelerator, this may cause a spin.

DRIVING IN FOG

Use dipped headlights. Stay a minimum of two car lengths from the vehicle in front.

REDUCE YOUR SPEED

If visibility is less than 100m, turn on your front and rear fog lights to increase visibility.

DRIVING IN WIND

High sided vehicles are at risk of crosswinds. Keep a safe distance from these vehicles and be prepared to stop if necessary. Other vehicles, cyclists, and pedestrians can be blown off course in high winds so exercise extra caution when these are present. Finally a lot of motor insurance policies now have breakdown cover included. Contact your broker/insurer now and store this number in your phone.

What is involved in the mortgage process For anyone thinking about purchasing a house, here is a breakdown of the mortgage application process. All cases vary so we will not put any timeline on the various stages. APPROVAL IN PRINCIPAL (AIP)

Once you have gathered all of the documents required to apply for a mortgage your broker will package an application and submit it for AIP. This is the first stage in the process and is the lender’s assurance that, assuming there are no material changes in your circumstances by the time of formal application, they will provide a loan for the agreed amount in respect of a specific property. You do not have to have a property picked at this first stage. AIP lasts for six months. There can be a lot of back and forth with the lender during this stage as it is during the approval process that they query everything, making sure that nothing that would negatively affect an applicant’s ability to repay a mortgage, goes unnoticed.

By having your AIP sorted before you start shopping means that you will be ready to go when you find the right property and this could give you an advantage over other bidders. Once you secure a property you will need to get a valuation on the property done. This usually costs about €150 but varies depending on the lender. Assuming the valuation is in order and that you have met the conditions outlined in the AIP (there are always a few but they are generally straight forward), you will then be in a position to progress to loan offer. You will also need to appoint a solicitor before progressing to loan offer.

LOAN OFFER

Once the Loan Offer issues, there will be a few more conditions to be met but, again, these are usually straight forward. For example, organise life in-

surance and home insurance. All conditions must be satisfied prior to drawdown. An original of the loan offer will be sent to your solicitor and you will be required to sign the offer with them. Once all of the legals are sorted and all conditions outlined on the offer have been met, your solicitor will be able to request for the funds to be drawn-down.

DRAW-DOWN OF FUNDS

Once the solicitor requests drawdown of the loan, funds will be issued within a few days. Once the mortgage is drawndown your repayments will begin the following month.

OTHER COSTS TO BE AWARE OF

Stamp duty: 1% of the purchase price. Valuation Report on property must be organised: Approx €150. Engineer’s survey: It is recommended to have a survey done, especially if you are purchasing an older house. It isn’t a lender requirement but can give the buyer peace of mind that there is noth-

ing structurally wrong with the house (fees vary). Solicitor Fees: Vary depending on solicitor, cost of house, complexity etc., but allow 1% of purchase price plus VAT. Life Insurance: Cost depends on mortgage amount and term, age, health status etc. Home Insurance: Cost depends on house value, location etc. If you have any questions on mortgages email them to killarney@mcguireliston.ie or sales@killarneyadvertiser.ie.

NEWS BRIEFS... Outdoor staff levels remain static in KMD The number of outdoor staff working in the municipal district has remained, more or less, static over the last five years. New figures, revealed this week by Kerry County Council, show that there are now 36 general operatives serving the town compared to 33 in 2016. However, this figure has remained static since 2018. In the roads department, there are now 44 outdoor staff employed by KMD, the same as last year but one less than 2018 but two more than 2017. There have been several calls by local councillors to increase the staff levels on the ground in Killarney, most-recently by Niall Kelleher who asked Monday’s Kerry County Council meeting for “a breakdown for the number of outdoor general operatives for the last five years per Municipal District”.

In loving memory of Joan Foley late of Leamnaguilla, Ballyhar, Killarney, who died on 22nd December 2016 . Mother God looked around his garden, And saw an empty space, He then looked down upon the earth, And saw your tired face. He put his arms around you, And raised you up to rest, His garden must be beautiful, Because he only takes the best. He knew you were in pain, And that a cure was not to be, So he closed your weary eyelids, And whispered “come to me”. With tearful eyes we watched you, And saw you slip away, And though we loved you dearly, We knew you could not stay. It broke our hearts to lose you, But you did not go alone, For part of us went with you, On the day God called you home. Sadly missed and lovingly remembered always by your loving family, Tim, Eamonn, Dermie, Neil Brendan and Máiréad, son in law, daughters in law and 14 grandchildren. xxxxx

IN MEMORIAM

They say there is a reason, They say that time will heal But neither time nor reason, Will change the way we feel. For no one knows the heartache, That lies behind our smiles, No one knows how many times, We have broke down and cried.

In loving memory of Mary Theresa Moynihan, late of Edgware and formerly of Shronedraugh Headford, who died on the 27th of November 2011. R.I.P. I seldom ask for miracles, But today just one would do, To leave the door wide open, And see my love walk through, I’d wrap my arms around her, And kiss her smiling face, For she was someone special, Who no one can replace. Always loved and remembered by Tom.

Each time we look at your picture, You seem to smile and say, Don’t be sad, but courage take, And love each other for my sake. May the God of Love and Mercy, Care for Mom who has gone, And bless with consolation, We who are left to carry on.

Kerry put up brave fight but old foes Antrim triumph in Joe McDonagh final

JOE MCDONAGH CUP FINAL _________________________________________________________________________________

Kerry

1-17 | Antrim 0-22

CROKE PARK Kerry came within a puck of a ball of the promised land in Croke Park on Sunday but in the end it was Antrim, their tormentors-in-chief throughout 2020, who prevailed to book their place in next year’s Liam MacCarthy Cup. A first half goal by Mikey Boyle kept The Kingdom in contention and although Antrim looked to be pulling away in the second, the underdogs never dropped their heads and managed to cut the deficit to just two with time running out. That final goal opportunity that they so badly desired proved elusive, however, and the Ulstermen held on for their fourth, and by far most significant, victory over Kerry this year. Antrim started much the brighter and raced into a 6-2 lead by the first water break but when Boyle capitalised on a defensive error by finding the back of the net, Fintan O’Connor’s side were back in business. Kerry’s main man Shane Conway equalised with a free shortly after and after a tit-for-tat period which saw both teams register three points each, the sides were level at 1-6 to 0-9. Niall McKenna came within an inch of goaling for Antrim late in the first half but John B O’Halloran pulled off a remarkable goal-line clearance to keep his clean sheet intact, and the men from the south eventually took their first lead of the match through Michael O’Leary in the 38th minute. Antrim came out swinging in the second, however, and rattled off six scores without reply to build up a 0-16 to 1-8 lead

heading into the second water break. The Saffrons pushed that gap out to six with 10 minutes to play and despite a spirited Kerry fightback, they held firm to win by two points. It was a sad end to the year for Kerry but they certainly have plenty to build on for 2021.

KERRY SCORERS: Shane Conway 0-9 (8f), Mikey Boyle 1-0, Michael O’Leary 0-2, Daniel Collins 0-2, Paudie O’Connor 0-1, Pádraig Boyle 0-1, Colm Harty 0-1, Brendan O’Leary 0-1. ANTRIM SCORERS: Ciarán Clarke 0-11 (8f), Neil McManus 0-4 (2f, 1 ‘65), Niall McKenna 0-2, Conal Cunning 0-2, James McNaughton 0-1, Michael Bradley 0-1, Conor McCann 0-1. KERRY: John B O’Halloran; Bryan Murphy, Tomás O’Connor, Eric Leen; Jason Diggins, Fionán Mackessy, Michael Leane; Brandon Barrett, Paudie O’Connor; Michael O’Leary, Shane Nolan, Shane Conway; Daniel Collins, Mikey Boyle, Maurice O’Connor. Subs: Barry O’Mahony for M O’Connor, Pádraig Boyle for P O’Connor, Colm Harty for M Boyle, Brendan O’Leary for Barrett. ANTRIM: Ryan Elliott; Phelim Duffin, Matthew Donnelly, Stephen Rooney; Joe Maskey, Paddy Burke, Gerard Walsh; Eoghan Campbell, Keelan Molloy; Niall McKenna, James McNaughton, Michael Bradley; Daniel McCloskey, Conor McCann, Ciarán Clarke. Subs: Conal Cunning for McCloskey, Neil McManus for Molloy, Donal Nugent for McCann, Conor Johnston for Bradley, Aodhán O'Brien for McKenna.

GAFFER: A still from the docmentary showing MEK Galaxy manager Darragh O'Regan giving a team talk.

Galaxy ‘Til I Die Behind-the-scenes documentary tells story of MEK Galaxy’s first season in Kerry’s top flight An intriguing new documentary following the trials and tribulations of a Killarney soccer club is set to entertain and enthrall local sports fans this Christmas. The four-part series, which is similar in style to the popular Sunderland ‘Til I Die documentary on Netflix and Amazon’s All or Nothing series, has been produced by Kerry company Full-Time Productions. The subject of the doc is Killarney-based senior team MEK Galaxy as they navigate the 2019/20 season, the club’s first in the Premier A Division of the KDL.

The release on December 20 will be the culmination of 18 months of hard work for director Kevin Kelleher and speaking to the Killarney Advertiser this week, he explained why MEK Galaxy were the right fit for this kind of documentary. “I’ve known Darragh (O’Regan, Galaxy’s manager) for a couple of years and I liked his management style. Kelleher says a desire to promote these non-professional players and clubs was the main motivating factor behind setting up his business in 2016, and his reason for creating this new documentary. “We just thought that this level of sport deserved more coverage. Just because it isn’t professional doesn’t mean that it doesn’t have drama or heartbreak. It still means all the world to these players. We think there are more stories to be told behind the scenes.” Galaxy player and self-confessed “joker in the pack” Aidan Galvin said that he

AUSTIN STACK PARK The Kerry minors showed tremendous grit and determination to fight back from the brink and defeat great rivals Cork in a gripping Munster semi-final in Tralee on Tuesday night. The Kingdom looked to be down and out for long periods of the game but a rip-roaring fightback forced a draw and extra time. The hosts pushed on in those two extra

periods and some accurate free-taking down the stretch proved crucial as James Costello’s men ran out threepoint winners. They now move on to face Clare or Limerick in the final, which will be played next Tuesday, December 22. Who wants a Munster medal for Christmas?

Playing with the aid of a strong breeze in the first half, Cork looked much the bet-

ter side and despite the best efforts of the excellent Paudie O’Leary (Gneeveguilla) and the point-kicking of William Shine (Killarney Legion), The Rebels led by three, 0-9 to 0-6, at half-time. In truth, it should have been more. Cork dangerman Conor Hanlon pushed that lead out early in the second with a superbly-taken goal and at this point, Kerry looked to be in real trouble. They kept tipping way, however, and although the visitors seemed to be in control, the gap never widened to a demoralising margin. Kerry still trailed by four heading into the final 10 minutes but then some inspirational points by Cian McMahon

and his teammates are looking forward to the documentary’s release. “Although results didn’t go our way, Kevin still managed to get a lot of good content,” Galvin said. “If the preview is anything to go by, it should be a good watch.” Did the players find it strange having the cameras around? “It caught me off guard a few times alright but we got used to it pretty quickly. I think they got footage of me scoring an own goal. That was the camera’s fault. “I’m sure there will be some surprises. If people find us losing most weeks funny then they’re in for a treat.” Episode 1 of Full-Time Seasons: A Year with MEK Galaxy will be available on the Full-Time Productions Facebook page from December 20 with Episodes 2, 3 and 4 being released on December 24, 27 and 31. (Dr Crokes), who kicked 0-8 in total, turned the tie on its head. The skilful inside forward popped over a string of fine scores, including a fisted effort in injury time that looked to have given his side the win. Aaron Sheehy equalised for Cork, though, and the match went to extra time. The first period of overtime was nip and tuck, as were the opening stages of the second. It was still all square with just five minutes to go and the prospect of penalties loomed large. Substitute Jordan Kissane (Austin Stacks) had other ideas, however, and he swung over a massive, long-range score to give Kerry a late lead. Fellow substitute Darragh O’Sullivan (Churchill) then proceeded to settle matters with three calmly-converted frees, and the reigning champions advanced to yet another Munster final.

Kiely’s men are a class apart

18.12.2020

Eamonn Fitzgerald reviews last Sunday’s hurling finals and also tees up this weekend’s All-Ireland football final between Dublin and Mayo. It was never going to be easy and it wasn’t for the underdogs at Croke Park on Sunday last, when the sheer power and class of Limerick came through. Limerick were clear winners, 0-30 to 0-19 over a gallant Waterford team. The latter needed goals and Limerick had the luxury of 30 points to lift the Liam MacCarthy Cup. The result was never in doubt. Indeed, they could well have been celebrating three-in-a-row, only for Tipperary slipping in to claim the 2019 title. They can still do the new three-in-a-row such is their overall strength in depth but Kilkenny, Tipperary and Galway have not gone away for the 2021 campaign. Popular support was for underdogs Waterford, who won so many new admirers for their great spirit. They were down 10 points at one stage in the semi-final against Kilkenny and defied all the odds by staging an incredible come back to win. However, there was to be no Cinderella Christmas for the Déise.

HEGARTY

In last Sunday’s final Limerick were in a class apart. They were all in great fettle, led by the majestic Gearóid Hegarty. The right half-forward got everything right on the big day. He played the world of ball and used it so well. He also chipped in with seven points in a Man-of-theMatch performance. Add in Tom Morrissey’s five points and a further five which he assisted. Waterford could not match that. Limerick didn’t need goals with 30 white flags, 12 points from play, while Waterford scored just four points from play and had to depend on free-taker Stephen Bennett to keep them in touch. We all knew beforehand that Waterford needed goals and they were very close in the opening minute when the Jack Fagan’s strike flew across the goal. What that might have done for the Déise. One of the features of the game was the courageous and brilliant net-minding of both goalkeepers. Nickie Quaid made

six splendid saves (and he plays his club hurling at midfield). Stephen O’Keeffe also excelled when it seemed that Limerick would hit the net, especially that stunning double save. Limerick were strong in all departments. Apart from Gearóid Hegarty, I was impressed by Kyle Hayes and Tom Morrissey, and their teammates weren’t far behind the trailblazers. Even if Waterford scored the early goal opportunities that they needed so badly, I felt that Limerick had this game in control throughout. Waterford lost their influential centre back Tadhg de Búrca through injury in the 21st minute and that was a blow, even if his substitute Iarlaith Daly did well when he came on.

POWER

Liam Cahill has done a great job with Waterford and his side did not collapse, despite the power of the physically con-

ditioned Limerick, who did not have a sponsor’s name on their geansaís. Not to worry, they invested a lot of money in well-paid backroom staff and magnanimous JP made sure the bobs flowed into the coffers. He’ll still have plenty loose change to bring the Ryder Cup to Adare and the by-pass will also be sorted in good time. But money alone doesn’t guarantee success. The great work done by Limerick in developing their hurling academies for the last decade or more has led to All-Ireland U21 successes in 2015 and 2017 and ultimately provided the platform for Kiely’s success at senior level. Team captain Declan Hannon raised the cup, but it will be well into 2021 before it arrives at Shannonside. Kilkenny still lead the way with 36 titles, Cork are next with 30, then Tipperary with 28, and then all the ways to Limerick, who are now on nine. Waterford

have only won twice (1948 and 1959). Kerry won only once, in 1891.

MCDONAGH CUP

No cup for the Kerry hurlers either, but they came very close, just 2 points adrift of Antrim. Yes, they gave it everything, but I felt that Antrim deserved to win with much more to spare than the 0-22 to 1-17 final scoreline suggests. Kerry were in a good position at the interval thanks to a Mikey Boyle goal and a Michael O’Leary point. Shane Conway floated a lovely cross-field ball which deceived the Antrim full-back and Boyle made no mistake for the only goal of the match. Surprisingly, Kerry went in at half-time with that unexpected lead. The match-winning move came in the 45th minute when Antrim brought on Neil McManus and this ace forward showed his class. The Cushendall man pulled a hamstring in the Division 2 league final against Kerry earlier this year and couldn’t start. When he was introduced he made a huge contribution, weighing in with four points. That made a big difference as his side pulled away. Fair dues to Kerry, they didn’t cave in and were the dominant side in the final quarter when they scored seven points to Antrim’s three. As expected, the consistent free takers on both sides delivered once more. Ciarán Clarke scored 11 points, eight of these from frees and three from play. Kerry’s marksman Shane Conway matched that free-taking with eight points and a further one point from play. He was very closely marked in general play and did well on the rare occasions when he wasn’t double-marked. So often he has pointed club, college and county to victory, but he was too closely marked on this occasion to clinch victory. His free-taking was flawless, though. Great credit to Kerry for refusing to buckle in the final quarter and all they needed in the final lap was another goal. They came close but could not billow the

SUPPORT

With former Tipperary goalkeeper Brendan Cummins in this management team, Kerry have done well this season. However, Antrim proved to be their nemesis on all four occasions in which they met in 2020. But Kerry they were well able to compete in all competitions. Antrim have qualified to play in the Leinster SHC in 2021. Going up to the senior grade is still a bridge too far for the Kerry hurlers, but solid progress is well in train. Now is the time for the GAA supporters in Kerry to get behind the hurlers.

DUBLIN POISED

Hurling honours lie with Limerick, and tomorrow Dublin will rewrite the record books that they already rewrote last year. They won the Sam Maguire for the fifth year in a row in 2019. Kerry should have won that drawn game, but Dublin grasped the opportunity after that reprieve, and they are now in pole position for updating that magnificent

achievement. Far away from a sunny September afternoon they will most likely have seasonal wind and rain to contend with. Hill 16, so loved by the Dubs, will be empty but for the ghost of Molly Malone. Dublin will not mind the new setting. It will be strange watching them on RTÉ tomorrow afternoon. They haven’t been beaten since Donegal slipped theM in the semi-final IN 2014 and up popped Kerry’s Kieran O’Leary and Fionn Fitzgerald to lift the Sam Maguire. We haven’t seen it since then. Mayo are the best-equipped team to beat Dublin this year, but the Dubs have so many options that they are sure to win. They are tenacious, skilful and determined to win all games by as much as possible. Stephen Cluxton will pull the strings with the kickouts and even if Mayo exert the press for the short kickouts, he will go long, where I expect Brian Fenton, in particular, to win the aerial duels over Matthew Ruane and glide through for a few points. Up front

Dean Rock will probably score 7 points from frees and a further 3 to go to double figures. Cian O’Connor can be well proud of his fantastic semi-final scoring, but he will be doubly marked with either Mick Fitzsimons or Eoin Murchan breathing down his neck. What’s more, if Dublin turn over a Mayo attack, Murchan will take off like a gazelle, link-up with… Well, take your pick of James McCarthy, Fenton, Kilkenny and Con O’Callaghan to put the ball past David Clarke. The latter played a blinder last time out and even if he repeats that form, Rock will keep the Dubs machine ticking over. Where are current All-Stars, Paul Mannion and Brian Howard? New boss Dessie Farrell has them on the bench. He doesn’t need to start them but will have them ready to come on if any of the starting 15 are not delivering tomorrow. And then there is Jack McCaffrey, who scored 1-3 from wing-back in the drawn final v Kerry last year and then announced that he would not be playing

81

for Dublin in 2020. Just like that, and him in his prime three or four years short of 30. It was not all about the demands on the Clontarf doctor due to COVID-19. He just lost the kick and buzz out of playing for the county, but once he rediscovers his mojo he will be back for 2021 and the seven-in-a-row bid. Reputation will count for nought; he’ll have to work his way back on. Mayo face a huge task tomorrow, but they are well equipped to stay with the Dubs, matching them for athleticism. They will need big displays from Aidan O’Shea, Cian O’Connor and Matthew Ruane and they will also need goals. They won’t come easy. I expect Mayo to match the Dubs for much of the game, but feel that Dublin have too many options, especially if Plan A doesn’t work out. Look at the Dublin bench and say no more. Much and all as one would like to see Mayo ending that All-Ireland famine, I expect the long, and longed-for, wait will not end just yet. Dublin to win.

History beckons for Dublin (again) Dominant Dubs widely tipped to make it six-in-a-row

Defending champions Dublin welcome Mayo to Croke Park on Saturday hoping to claim their sixth All-Ireland senior football title on the trot. And it would take a brave person to bet against them. The Dubs have been at their ruthless best en route to this year’s final, making light work of Westmeath, Laois and Meath in Leinster before demolishing Cavan by 1-24 to 0-12 in the last four. Their average winning margin of 17.25 paints a sorry picture and will do little to encourage the challengers heading into this unique winter finale. The impeccable form of half man, half machine Brian Fenton has Dublin fans cooing with some observers suggesting that the Spa export could eventually go down as the greatest player of all time. If he maintains his personal unbeaten record and leads Dublin to No. 6, he could well be on his way.

GOOD VALUE

Mayo have also impressed at times since the restart and they were good value for their 5-20 to 3-13 victory over Tipperary in the semi-final. As imposing as their own points tally was in that game, conceding 3-13 to Tipp highlights some potential issues at the back, issues that Dublin will pinpoint and more than likely capitalise upon if they have not been resolved in time for the decider. Cillian O’Connor shot the lights out in that last outing as he finished up with a remarkable total of 4-9. Mayo will need their main marksmen to be at his best again this weekend, although he is unlikely to get the freedom of Croke Park from the reigning champions’ hard-hitting backline.

ALL-IRELAND SFC FINAL

_________________________________________________________________________

Dublin v Mayo Saturday at 5pm Croke Park OLD FRIENDS

This will be the fifth final meeting between Dublin and Mayo in the past eight years. The Dubs have won the three of those four matches, with the victory in 2016 coming after a thrilling drawn game which ended Mayo 0-15 Dublin 2-9. Incredibly, both of Dublin’s goals that day were inadvertently scored by Mayo men. Despite Dublin’s stranglehold over the championship generally, they have never won any of these finals against Mayo by more than two points. The gap appears to have widened in recent times, however, and one would expect Dublin to at least come close to covering the six-point pre-match spread. VERDICT: Dublin by 5.

POSSIBLE DUBLIN TEAM: Stephen Cluxton; Michael Fitzsimons, David Byrne, Johnny Cooper; Eoin Murchan, John Small, Robert McDaid; Brian Fenton, James McCarthy; Niall Scully, Ciarán Kilkenny, Seán Bugler; Paddy Small, Con O’Callaghan, Dean Rock. POSSIBLE MAYO TEAM: David Clark; Oisín Mullin, Chris Barrett, Lee Keegan; Paddy Durcan, Stephen Coen, Eoghan McLaughlin; Conor Loftus, Matthew Ruane; Kevin McLoughlin, Ryan O’Donoghue, Diarmuid O’Connor; Tommy Conroy, Aidan O’Shea, Cillian O’Connor.

Their average winning margin of 17.25 per game paints a sorry picture and will do little to encourage the challengers heading into this unique winter finale. OPINION WEEKLY SPORT

83

Our sports editor ADAM MOYNIHAN shares his thoughts on the week's burning issues

Winning this time would be the most Mayo thing Mayo could do As the Blue Army marches on towards yet another All-Ireland title, the rest of the country turns to Mayo and says, “good luck to ye”. Sadly, our words are half sincere and half sarcastic. As eager as many people are to see a new champion, and to see new life being breathed into our sport, the majority are also acutely aware that at this stage the chances of anyone beating Dublin are slim. And let’s be honest about it: being lucky isn’t exactly Mayo’s strong suit either. We won’t delve too deeply into the various tragedies that have befallen Mayo down through the years. (I’m still processing the fact that they conceded two own goals in one final, so I can only imagine how they feel about it up around Castlebar and Westport). Suffice to say that they’re due a break. Although, considering the opposition, I’m sure the statisticians will tell us that they’re also a due a hiding. The thing is, though, do we actually want Mayo to win this match? There is a school of thought out there that says a Dublin defeat would be bad for Gaelic football. If Mayo are victorious, the GAA can sit back and say, “now, there you all go, the competition is fine and the playing field is level”. Perversely, it could lead to inaction and even more complacency on the Association’s part, and that instead of going some way towards redressing the balance between the haves (Dublin) and the have nots (everyone else), an upset could just delay the revolution for another season, at least. By that logic, the very best outcome we can hope for this weekend is a complete blowout in Dublin’s favour. Something outrageous, like a scoreline of 6-31 to 0-4. A total annihilation. Lots of slow-motion close-ups of Cillian O’Connor sobbing inconsolably as Brian CAPTAIN: Can Aidan O'Shea lead Mayo to a shock victory over Dublin? And, more to the point, do we want him to? Pic: Ramsey Cardy/Sportsfile.

Fenton slips into third gear and scores his fifth goal of the evening. Surely then the powers that be will be forced to act. No one could stand for that. Even Pat Gilroy would have to concede that Dublin do not require increased funding, and that the criminally lopsided amount of cash they are currently getting is just fine, thank you very much. That’s that settled, then. Up the Dubs. Armed with this mindset, the final might actually be enjoyable. But it does also raise a frankly terrifying prospect. Now that we desperately want Mayo, the eternal underdogs, the nation’s sweethearts, to lose the All-Ireland for the good of the game and all that is holy, wouldn’t it just be the most ‘Mayo’ thing ever if they actually went out and won it?

GOLD AT THE END OF THE RAINBOW

How fantastic was it to see Mayo and Tipperary players, as well as referee David Gough and his umpires, wearing rainbow laces in the recent All-Ireland semi-final match-up in Croke Park? This time last year, in these very pages, former Kerry captain Darran O’Sullivan encouraged the GAA to get involved in Stonewall’s LGBT inclusivity initiative and whether his words influenced the decision or not, he deserves great credit for speaking out in the manner that he did. Seeing high profile players like O’Sullivan talking about the issue, and seeing the likes of Aidan O’Shea (pictured) wearing the rainbow laces, sends out such a positive message to both the GAA and the LGBT communities. It would be brilliant to see that filter down to club level too. Maybe next year, when things are hopefully back to normal and the pitches are reopened, local players can also get involved and show their support for this important cause.

The thing is, though, do we actually want Mayo to win this match? There is a school of thought out there that says a Dublin defeat would be bad for Gaelic football. If Mayo are victorious, the GAA can sit back and say, “now, there you all go, the competition is fine and the playing field is level”.

BRIAN JAMES FANTASY FOOTBALL LEAGUE AS IT STANDS (WEEK 13)

Leicester City stars stand out over low-scoring weekend of FPL action Leicester players James Maddison, Jamie Vardy, and James Justin were amongst the highest scoring FPL players in Gameweek 13 as they helped their side to a comfortable 3-0 win over Brighton & Hove Albion. Midfielder Maddison scored twice and picked up clean sheet points and three bonus points (despite being substituted in the 74th minute) to pick up 16 points in total. His teammate, Jamie Vardy, assised both of Maddison’s strikes and chipped in with a goal of his own to secure 13 points, while defender Justin finished up with 11 points thanks to a clean sheet, an assist, and two bonus points. Elsewhere, Villa goalkeeper Emi Martínez got 11, Southampon defender Jan Bednarek got 12, Gylfi Sigurdsson of Everton got 11 and Fulham striker Bobby Decordova-Reid was the second-highest scoring attacker with 9.

SALAH

Looking ahead to Gameweek 14 (Gameweek 13 was still being played at the time of going to print), Liverpool and Manchester United appear to have the most favourable fixtures of the top clubs as they face Crystal Palace and Leeds respectively. This would indicate that always-popular choices like Mo Salah and Bruno Fernandes are likely to be common captaincy picks this weekend. Kevin de Bruyne is another viable option as he leads his Manchester City side into battle against high-flying Southampton, although the Belgian’s poor showing midweek could deter some FPL managers from giving him the armband. Aston Villa captain Jack Grealish could also be a possibility. The creative midfielder has put up impressive numbers so far this season and Villa have a relatively decent fixture this time out: they

Rally book to arrive just in time for Christmas An eagerly awaited new book on Irish rallying by local man Michael O’Mahoney will arrive in local shops on Wednesday morning (December 23).

TOP MAN: Leicester City midfielder James Maddison was the top Fantasy Premier League performer last weekend as he registered an impressive total of 16.

‘Icons of Irish Rallying’ is a compilation of 75 stories by some of Ireland’s bestknown rally characters. They each told their story to O’Mahoney, who produced what he describes as “a labour of love”.

ICONS: Michael O'Mahoney (centre) with local rally drivers Rob Duggan and Colin O'Donoghue at last year’s Rentokil-Initial Killarney Historic Rally. Both the Duggan and O'Donoghue families feature in 'Icons of Irish Rallying'. Pic: Eamonn Keogh.

“It never set out to be a detailed record of who won what and when, but rather to capture the hidden, human and sometimes humorous tales as recounted by the people who have created and populated the landscape of Irish Rallying over the past six decades,” O’Mahoney said. The book is due off the printing presses on Tuesday morning and to ensure locals will have their copy in time for Christmas Day, O’Mahoney will personally deliver copies to Eason Killarney, O’Connor’s Beech Road, and Moriarty’s Centra Farranfore in time for Wednesday. It will also be available in Polymaths Bookstore in Tralee. The book includes contributions from Rosemary Smith, Billy Coleman, Alastair Fisher, Ronan Morgan, Michael O’Carroll, Louise Aitken Walker MBE, Austin MacHale, Paul Nagle and Craig Breen. ‘Icons of Irish Rallying’ is a limited edition publication and is also available by texting to 089 2213968. It costs €25 plus post and packaging. Include name, address, postal code and email address. There is no certainty that text orders will arrive in time for Christmas Day due to backlogs at the post offices.

Nagle’s WRC plan for 2021 hits setback Paul Nagle’s early 2021 plans have already been hit by coronavirus restrictions in Sweden. Last week, the Killarney Advertiser revealed that the Hyundai Motorsport team had retained Nagle and Craig Breen for a six-round World Rally Championship programme for next season. While precise details in relation to the events to be contested were not announced, the Germany-based team confirmed that the Irish crew would begin their 2021 campaign on Rally Sweden in February. However, on Tuesday of this week Rally Sweden organisers announced that the event has been already cancelled due to increased restrictions in Sweden’s Värmland region. A new all-snow rally is set to be announced to replace Rally Sweden.
