€500k to help re-start Killarney's live music scene A number of Killarney venues were elated this week to learn that funding to the tune of €500k has been announced to help re-start the town's live music scene. | By Sean Moriarty Of the €1,001,944 in funding announced this week for the county Killarney is to receive over half with funds to assist the Gleneagle Hotel Killarney/INEC Arena, Celtic Steps The Show, Scott’s Hotel, and Courtney’s Bar. The funding, announced by Minister for Education and Kerry TD Norma Foley on Tuesday, is in place to assist commercial venues, producers and promoters in Kerry to plan live events over the summer months. The scheme, managed by the Department of Tourism, Culture, Arts, Gaeltacht, Sport and Media will support live performances, particularly where capacity for live attendance is restricted due to COVID-19. The funding will make live performances viable or alternatively make them available online if audiences cannot attend due to restrictions.

"This money will help to facilitate the delivery of exciting programmes of activities over the coming summer and autumn period," Minister Foley said. Four venues and promoters in Killarney will receive a total of €560,646 in grant aid.

REACTION

The Gleneagle Hotel Killarney/INEC Arena will receive €380,822 for live music shows and for the pre-recording of live material from acts of the future. “We are delighted with this week’s announcement on funding," Mark Egan, Director of the Gleneagle INEC Arena

told the Killarney Advertiser. "We can now look ahead to implementing a programme of events that will provide employment for performers, artists, technicians and support staff many of whom have not had work for months. We have a fantastic, diverse programme in the pipeline and we can’t wait to get the various artists, crews and event suppliers back on site and back to the work we all love. We thank Minister Catherine Martin and the Department of Tourism, Culture, Arts, Gaeltacht, Sport and Media for making this grant available.”

Celtic Steps The Show will receive €84,627 to allow it livestream performances from its Killarney Racecourse Theatre. For Celtic Steps producer/director David Rae the funding presents more than just an opportunity to get the show back on the road. He will create 43 paid positions from dancers and musicians to sound and lighting engineers and even a COVID-19 Compliance Officer. He is awaiting further guidance on permission to allow a limited audience attend a Celtic Steps performance but he hopes by early July to have a series of online performances up and running. “This is what it is all about, getting these people back to work after so long being unemployed,” he said. “I will need all of these people, from two days before I start to two days after, it is almost like building a festival from scratch and we can’t thank the minister and department enough for this chance.” Scott’s Hotel will receive the same figure as Celtic Steps for live performances for tourists across the summer. Courtney’s Bar on Plunkett St will receive €10,570 for a number of gigs that will feature local musicians. “This is fantastic news,” manager Brian Murphy said. “We have been associated with live music in Killarney for a long time so we are delighted to get the funding and allow live music to continue.” Like Celtic Steps, he is still waiting for confirmation on the format of the funded gigs. “It is hard to see a bar gig with an audience going ahead but one of the stipulations of the grant is that if we cannot do a live gig under current guidelines, we have to do it online."

Pharmacy jabs begin today | By Michelle Crean Pharmacists across Kerry - including four in Killarney - are ready to begin giving the Johnson and Johnson Janssen jabs to the over 50s as the latest stage of the vaccine rollout. Kennellys Pharmacy at The Reeks Gateway, Park Road Care Plus on Countess Road, Boots Deerpark Shopping Centre, and Sheahans Pharmacy on Main Street will be booking people in groups of five as each vile lasts just six hours once opened. Staff at Kennellys Pharmacy at The Reeks are ready to welcome in their first vaccine participants today (Friday). Each had pre-booked their slot, according to Dispensary Manager Christina O'Grady.

"We are starting today for the over 50s only with the Janssen Johnson and Johnson one dose jab," she told the Killarney Advertiser. She said that they have been busy in the pharmacy all week booking people in, however for now, depending on demand and supply available, they'll be vaccinating people two days a week. "We're taking a list of people. It'll probably be only two mornings a week - it all depends on the uptake." Pharmacist Finbarr Kennelly said it's a great way to give a vaccine to those who may have missed theirs. "It's an opportunity for the over 50s who have missed their vaccine for whatever reason. The advantage is that it's a one shot vaccine." Anyone who'd like to book in for their vaccine can call Kennellys on 064 6639427.

Fans return to Fitzgerald Stadium after eight months | By Sean Moriarty

Four weeks for replacement airline It will take at least four weeks before a replacement airline can cover the Dublin/Kerry route following the sudden collapse of Stobart Air last weekend. | By Sean Moriarty However, it is not all bad news for Kerry Airport as Ryanair will resume its Kerry Stansted service from today (Friday). The budget airline is advancing plans to resume all its Kerry services with the Frankfurt Hahn route set to be the first international service on July 18. All other routes including Berlin, Faro, Alicante and Manchester will return bit by bit once international travel restrictions are lifted. The Killarney Advertiser understands that up to eight airlines have expressed an interest in taking over the Dublin/Kerry route. Airport staff were left reeling last Saturday morning when it emerged that Stobart Air had collapsed. The UK airline operated the Dublin/Kerry franchise on behalf of Aer Lingus Regional. It had seven months left to run on its contract with Isle of Man based carrier Ettyl due to take over the route later this year. It has since been confirmed that Ettyl does not have the necessary funding in place to take over the service. As a result, Kerry Airport will be left without a Dublin connection for the best part of four weeks. It is expected that Aer Lingus will take over the route for the remainder of Stobart’s seven month contract. “This may seem like a long time, but in airline terms and because it is a Government funded route, this is actually very

fast, faster than ever imagined,” Airport CEO, John Mulhern, told the Killarney Advertiser. “This is being done as fast as humanly possible. The Government was able to put all its bureaucracy aside and make this happen. Thanks to Norma Foley, Brendan Griffin and Pa Daly, they were all on the case at 6am last Saturday morning. We are happy things are happening so fast – we are not happy to lose Stobart, they were a great airline and great friends – but happy to see solutions are coming so quickly.” Thanks to the efforts of local politicians, the procurement process for finding an alternative airline has been speeded up. Tender documents are expected to be published early next week – much sooner than normal circumstances – and at least eight airlines have already expressed an interest in the route. Meanwhile, Ryanair’s return to normality continues at Kerry Airport. The Luton service has been operating on Monday, Wednesday and Friday for the last two weeks. The Stansted service is due to return today (Friday) and will operate Mondays and Fridays for the foreseeable future. German services will resume next month. “Ryanair will start with Frankfurt Hahn and as they slowly get back on their feet all other services, Berlin, Manchester, Faro and Alicante, will return,” added Mr Mulhern.

Officials from Fitzgerald Stadium remain hopeful that crowd capacity at the venue can be increased to 500 spectators in time for the Munster final on July 25 – subject to both national health guidelines and Kerry qualifying for the game. Last Saturday evening's National League semi-final between Kerry and Tyrone was the first game at the stadium since the 2020 Kerry Petroleum Intermediate Club Football Championship Quarter-Final when Glenbeigh-Glencar played Beaufort on October 4 last year. Due to current restrictions only 200 fans were allowed attend Saturday's big match. That will remain in place for Kerry’s opening Munster Champion-

ship tie with Clare on June 26. “It had been more than eight months since Fitzgerald Stadium welcomed back fans to the venue," stadium PRO Tatyana McGough told the Killarney Advertiser. “Everything went exceptionally well.” She is hopeful that more restrictions will be eased on July 5, paving the way for an increase in capacity to 500 fans in time for the July 25 Munster Final. “It is likely that from July 5 up to 500 spectators may be permitted to attend games. We hope this number will increase for the Munster Final. If it is a Cork versus Kerry Munster Final the game will be fixed for Sunday July 25 at 4pm in the Fitzgerald Stadium. The stadium’s staff are very confident in being able to host any number of fans that may be allowed.”

Green light for teen accommodation | By Michelle Crean Plans for sheltered accommodation to house homeless teenagers in foster care have been given the go ahead. An Bord Pleanala has approved a three-storey building in Flemings Lane just off High Street, which will have eight bedrooms, two one bedroom apartments and one two bedroom apartment. The teens living within the premises will be supervised by applicant Eileen O’Brien who will live on the ground floor of the premises. The two one-bed apartments on the second floor would either be rented out or used for independent living for the teenagers as they reach adulthood.

The two-bed apartment will be on the third floor. There are also plans for balconies at second and third floor levels. The proposed apartment building is contemporary in design with a mix of stone and render finish on the lower floors and synthetic burned timber finish on the upper floors. The second floor is recessed at the front and the third floor is recessed at the front and the rear with a decorative feature on the front elevation comprising dark grey timber steel poles. The building will also have a flat roof. Planning permission was granted subject to 14 conditions including a two-metre high boundary wall to be constructed on south, south-western boundaries of the site and there's to be no overnight commercial guest accommodation.

The secret is in the book! | By Michelle Crean The secret to finding your true happiness is all in a new book which will guide readers to unlock their potential.

DREAM COME TRUE: Michael Gleeson, recently retired town councillor, with his wife Kathleen Gleeson, advocated for a cycle and walkway linking Muckross Estate and Killarney Demesne, finally got his wish, when the cycleway was officially opened by Cathaoirleach of Killarney Municipal District, Cllr Brendan Cronin. Photo: Valerie O'Sullivan

Time to get on your bikes as new cycleway opens Cathaoirleach of Killarney Municipal District, Cllr Brendan Cronin, officially opened the Muckross Road to Ross Road Cycleway, adding a key link to the town’s cycling and pedestrian pathways. The scheme, which was constructed by Daniel Canty, under the supervision of Killarney Municipal District Engineers John Ahern and Stephen Sheehan, started in November 2020 and despite stoppages due to COVID, has finished in time for the summer season. The 750m cycleway joins the Ross Road and Muckross Road, in an off-road, safe route, funded by the Department of Transport, Tourism & Sport and the National Transport Authority under their Active Travel Measures scheme. The Cathaoirleach, Cllr Cronin, welcomed the development of the route, praising all those who had been involved in driving this project to completion. “It is a project that has been on the agenda for quite some time, and significant work has been carried out by the Elected Members, Council officials and local communities in making it a reality,” he said. “I want to pay tribute to everyone involved in bringing it from the drawing board to official opening." Councillor Cronin acknowledged the input of former Councillor Michael Gleeson who was in attendance at the opening. “Over the past 18 months, with the various restrictions due to COVID, the ability for people to be able to go out for a

cycle or a walk has been critical for their well-being. The development of such a key outdoor recreation project is crucial for the town and we look forward to being able to further continue the development of such dedicated cycleways and pathways.” Municipal District Manager, Angela McAllen also praised all those who have been involved in the project, and pointed to the importance of having such projects shovel-ready in terms of design and planning, to be able to take advantage when national funding for projects such as these become available. “This is a key link between the Muckross and Kenmare estates, and with fantastic views along the river, it is something that young and old can enjoy in a safe, vehicle-free setting,” she said. “We are committed to improving the cycling and walking provision for residents and visitors to this county, in keeping with the objectives of the County Development Plan and the desire for greater access for all ages.” Fr Niall Howard finished with a blessing as part of the opening and acknowledged the importance of a quiet space for walking and cycling.

Brazilian native Michelle Hadad, who moved to Ireland 14 years ago has written 'The Secret Box: Concave and Convex', a 432 page book which addresses the issues of suicide and develops into two different narratives. It is also a follow up to her previous work 'The Secret Box...Finding the Key', a 192 page paperback launched by Michael Healy-Rae TD and reviewed by now retired judge James O'Connor, in October 2017. Michelle, who studied adult psychology and is a NLP practitioner who encourages clients to transform limiting self-beliefs, explains that this version continues the story of Maria from the first book. In the first book, the reader compares and contrasts their own life experiences with those of Maria and ask themselves the very question posed at the end of the book in the final chapter or 'Padlock 13' - "who are you?" “Readers are outside the box, they see their own stories - that’s when we judge others," Michelle told the Killarney Advertiser. "It is fiction and the story is in two versions, the positive is bigger than the negative. There is always hope regardless of pain." She added that people need to forget about what others think, and focus on their own values and traditions. “It’s a self help book, it doesn't matter what people think of us, life's too short. I'm motivating people in a positive way

because of my NLP and psychology qualification." However, she emphasised that readers don't have to have read the first book to understand the second one. "Maria is the leading figure and there's a few characters from book one but you don't have to read that to get book two." She added that she's thankful to everyone who helped her along the way. "I have been blessed to have met so many people to help with my books." Both books are available from O’Connor’s Centra, The Reeks and Horans Health Store on Beech Road.

"It takes a community to save a life and you can find out how to be part of it by visiting www.killarneycru.ie."

A native of Hannover in Germany, he had lived in Killarney since 1968 and was a very dedicated, enterprising and long-serving member of Chamber, serving as its President from 1982 to 1984. The Chamber expressed its condolences to his wife, Christal, sons Lars and Kjell, daughters-in-law Norma and Yvonne, grandchildren Max, Ben, Lara, Ewan and Katie and his extended family and friends. Chamber President Niall Kelleher said Klaus, of Sundays Well Apartments, Countess Road and formerly of Crohane, Fossa, played a major role in the industrial, commercial and business life in Killarney through his work as a director with the Liebherr Container Cranes company from 1968 to 2002. “Everybody realises and appreciates the enormous role Liebherr has played and still plays in the everyday life of Killarney and Klaus Nölke was a central figure in the remarkable progress made by the company down through the years,” the Chamber President said. “His wonderful vision and his technical and commercial prowess ensured that Liebherr remained at the cutting edge and, in that regard, his contribution to the commercial life of Killarney was enormous,” Mr Kelleher added.

TRIBUTE: Klaus Nölke made Killarney his home and played an active role in the community.

Born in 1939, Klaus was a very enterprising Chamber of Commerce President for a two-year term and he helped establish the Killarney Working Group which led to the setting up of the hugely successful Killarney Looking Good Competition. A long-time member of Killarney Golf and Fishing Club, Mr Nölke was also the voluntary project leader in the painstaking project to restore the ornate iron railings which surround the Church of the Sloes opposite the town hall in Killarney. A private funeral took place in St Mary's Church of Ireland on Wednesday which was live streamed on www.churchservices.tv/killarneystmarysloes. He was laid to rest in Aghadoe Cemetery, Killarney.

Investigation continues into New Street fire Killarney Gardai are continuing their investigation into the cause of a fire on New Street last week. The fire broke out at the Eviston House Hotel in the early hours of Bank Holiday Monday (June 7). It started in a room just off the kitchen on the first floor and spread along the venting and ducting on the first, second and third floors. There was heavy smoke

throughout the hotel but all guests were evacuated safely. The landmark hotel, which also houses the famous Danny Mann pub, has not yet reopened, but local Gardai are still investigating its cause. “The investigation is ongoing,” a Killarney Gardai Station spokesperson told the Killarney Advertiser. “We are establishing the full facts in relation to the fire.”

54321 Challenge an all female event This year's 54321 Challenge is all set but with a difference this year as it's an all female event. | By Michelle Crean The event originally started nine years ago with a team of five people over four days, completing three cycles, and climbing two mountians for one cause – a local charity. Given the ongoing COVID-19 situation, this year again will see restricted numbers taking part in the event. The 54321 Challenge’s top priority is to ensure the safety of its participants and in the current climate, this extends to their families, neighbours, friends etc. This year the 10 ladies will take to the roads and mountains in two teams of five over the four days of the event from Thursday August 19 to Sunday 22 inclusive. It will include a cycle the Ring of Kerry on day one (Thursday 19), a climb up Carrantuohill on day two (Friday 20th), a cycle from Killarney to the foot of Cnoc Na Tobair and then climb Cnoc Na Tobair on day 3 (Saturday 21) finishing off with a cycle of the Skellig Ring on day four (Sunday 22).

ALL WOMEN EVENT: Maryanne Leane, Cora Walsh, Mairead Dunphey, Marian Kelly, Siobhan O'Sullivan, Theresa Carroll and Carole Moran are taking part in this year's 54321 Challenge for Comfort for Chemo Kerry. Photo: Grigoriy Geniyevskiy

The committee are currently looking at ways other people can participate in an online version of the Challenge while representing and raising funds for their chosen charity, and they will be announcing details in the coming weeks via their website and social media. The Challenge has raised almost €242,000 to date supporting a number of very deserving Kerry charities. This year’s selected charity is Comfort for Chemo Kerry, whose misson is to fundraise €5 million to build and equip a stateof-the-art purpose built chemotherapy unit as a centre of excellence for the patients of Kerry, who need chemotherapy

and oncology treatments. "When choosing this year’s charity the organisers contacted a past participant and a dear friend to us all Mairead Dunphy from Glencar who is currently on her own journey with cancer," Tony Dunne, PRO for the Challenge told the Killarney Advertiser. "We wanted to show our support to Mairead and knowing that she would like to support those who have supported her on her journey so far, she had already being looking at ideas to raise much needed funds for Comfort for Chemo Kerry. Little did we think that Mairead would be actually contemplating taken

part in the event but in true style and testament to the person that she is, she will be one of the 10 participants. We would be very grateful for any contribution to this worthwhile cause and supporting the participants of this year’s Challenge." You can donate via www.54321challenge.org or go to the Comfort for Chemo Kerry Facebook page for online donation information. To see more about the challenge and the people taking part and to donate go to Facebook: 54321challenge. "With your support and donations, we can support this very deserving cause."

THE FINAL LOOK: Peter Herlihy pictured with his final look after his haircut.

Peter's perfect gift will help sick children | By Michelle Crean Saturday was a big day for one Kilcummin lad who transformed his look by cutting 13 inches off his long hair. Peter Herlihy nervously entered Sean Taaffe's Killarney salon in The Courtyard, where Sandra O'Sullivan, with the assistance of Sean Jackman and Eoin Sheehan, gave him a whole new look. Peter, who has so far raised €2,800 of a €1,000 goal via GoFundMe for The Little Princess Trust, is still on cloud nine this week as his charitable act is set to benefit four children who have lost their hair due to cancer. In all, Peter donated 10 ponytails of his hair - measuring 13 inches each which have already been sent to the charity this week. Peter, son of John and Aislinn, came up with the idea of cutting his hair for charity after discussing it with his mom. And, after conducting his own research online he found The Little Princess Trust which provides free real hair wigs to children and young people who have lost their own hair through cancer treatment or other conditions. It also funds research

into the long-term effects of medications used to treat childhood cancer and illnesses. “I had butterflies going into Sean Taaffe’s to get my hair cut," Peter told the Killarney Advertiser. "I was very excited at the idea of giving my hair away to someone who needed it more than me. If you want to do something good, you shouldn't do it just to feel good - you should do it to do good". And Peter's friends loved the transformation - but couldn’t believe how different he looked. They even advised him to be careful in the sun saying that he now needed to invest in sunscreen for his newly exposed ears and neck! “We’ve been at Peter to cut his hair for ages, but he always said he would only cut it if he had a good reason to and if it would end up helping someone," his proud mom Aislinn added. "Eventually, he decided that helping those with childhood cancer would be a cool thing to do, so that’s what he did. He was very determined to make it work.” Donations can still be made by Debit, Credit Card or Apple Pay on the GoFundMe page: Peter's Fundraiser for The Little Princess Trust.

House win is a dream come true for Catríona After 12 months of hard work - with over 8000 tickets sold - Barraduff Community Field Organisation (BCFO) is basking in the success of their recent and very ambitious 'Win a Dream Kerry Home' fundraiser.

DRAW: Colm Hanratty, Danielle Favier, Kieran Healy, Peter Malone and Donal O’Donoghue pictured at the INEC for the live draw.

The committee members are rubbing their hands with glee and can congratulate themselves on a job well done as they look forward to planning the next phase of development at their wonderful community grounds in the vibrant village of Barraduff. The winner of the top prize - a 3-bed detached house in Barradauff - was local woman Catríona Moriarty from Muckross. The winning ticket was chosen in the INEC on June 6 when the draw was streamed live on social media. And according to fundraising committee member Paul Favier, it’s ironic that with ticket sales from 32 counties and 23 different countries a cailín áitiúil would be picked from the tombola by committee member Donal O’Donoghue. "It’s a dream come true for Catriona but it’s also for BCFO," he told the Killarney Advertiser this week. "The committee would like to congratulate Catríona and the other nine winners and wish them all the best. 8069 tickets in just over seven months is no mean feat. Indeed much of the success of this campaign can be attributed to the digital marketing company Six Two Digital who came on board after Christmas. Six Two Digital managed to sell tickets in every corner of Ireland and all around the world. This seems to be reflected in the fact that all 10 winning tickets drawn were purchased online through the 'Win a Dream Kerry Home' website."

WINNERS

The winners include two people from Wicklow, two from Cork, Australia, New York, the UK and of course Kerry. "The committee would like to thank CEO of Six Two Colm Hanratty who guided BCFO from 900 odd sales at Christmas time to over 8069 in five short months. This now leaves BCFO in the envious position of having money in the bank to plan their future. The success of this fundraiser gives BCFO the platform to extend and build on the existing facilities and amenities for the local community. Members of the committee paid trib-

ute to the many individuals who helped out. There were well over 40 volunteers helping the main committee. This shows the size of the challenge faced by the committee and we're delighted all the hard work paid off." He added that this is yet another feather in the cap for the committee. "The success of the carnivals in the '70s and '80s has been built on recently by various fundraisers. Many people will have great memories of the night at the dogs in 2013 and believe it or not we're not finished giving away money yet. Recent years have seen the 300 Club as the main source of income and we still have €3,600 in cash to giveaway over the next few months in prizes." BCFO is not just about fundraising. They are delighted people have made great use of their outdoor facilities during COVID restrictions and are glad to offer up their facilities for tractor runs, Barraduff Cardiac Response Unit, Santa fun runs, sports teams, fitness classes, charity runs and communal sports days between local schools. "This is truly a fantastic achievement by BCFO and one of the feel good stories of 2021 so far." Well done to Tadhg, Liam, Úna, Siobhán, Donal, Linda, Eamon, Johnny, Paul, Shane, Oliver and all their wonderful volunteers. Onwards and upwards for BCFO.

Currow kids go toddling to raise vital funds

70 toddlers from Currow Play School have become Ireland's littlest fundraisers as they stepped out to raise vital funds for vulnerable children.

NATIONAL PROGRAMME: Killarney’s Mary Leane is the head of finance at the National Gallery of Ireland and along with Gabriela Airini, Head of Apprenticeship at Accounting Technicians Ireland, is encouraging students into a career in accountancy.

Killarney native heads up national programme

They took part in the Barnardos Big Toddle which this year has the theme of 'Community Helpers'. Barnardos currently works with just under 18,000 children and families across Ireland and the funds raised will support Barnardos Early Years services. “This year, Currow Play School turns 25 and we have been taking part in Barnardos Big Toddle since 2006, which is 18 years of toddling in aid of vulnerable

children," Catherine Fleming form Currow Play School said. "Our toddle is a highlight for the children and the team every year. It’s fantastic to get the little ones involved in something so worthwhile at a young age, it’s always a great day of fun. Barnardos provides a huge number of services in communities across Ireland, but these can only continue with help from the public. The toddle runs throughout June so I would implore anyone with toddlers or wobblers at home to sign up for Barnardos Big Toddle supported by Pipin Pear today.” Anyone wishing to take part can register today at www.barnardos.ie/bigtoddle.

A Killarney native heading up finance at the National Gallery is encouraging Kerry students to apply for the accounting technician apprenticeship programme, which will create jobs in the region as part of 125 positions nationally. And local employers have been encouraged to sign up for the scheme to avail of a Government annual base grant per-registered apprentice from early 2022. The Accounting Technicians Ireland Apprenticeship is a funded, workbased learning programme in which locally-placed apprentices earn at least €19,890 a-year. Applications for the apprenticeship, which will be based at colleges in Cork, Limerick, Galway, Dublin, Monaghan, Waterford and Wicklow are now open. Accounting Technicians Ireland, whose apprenticeship programme has been the source of over 456 jobs, has embraced blended learning. The initiative allows students to spend four days a week working, often online with the agreement of the employer since the pandemic, and one day a week studying. School leavers, Leaving Cert students, career changers, and mature learners can all apply for the programme through Accounting Technicians Ireland. The Accounting Technicians Ireland Ap-

prenticeship provides a real alternative for school leavers who prefer practical training to a full-time college programme, or those who embarked on a college course and found it did not suit them. It is also an attractive option for existing employees and mature learners who want to pursue accounting. Large firms and smaller practices, as well as industry and the public sector have all embraced the programme. This is the third year of the National Gallery of Ireland’s participation in the programme, and according to Killarney’s Mary Leane, its head of finance, it is a great way to upskill. “Apprentices are not just gaining a qualification, they are also learning work based skills which they can continue to build on throughout their career,” she said. “Apprentices are delighted with the opportunity to earn as they learn while gaining practical experience in the workplace. The Accounting Technician Apprenticeship works for both the younger and more mature student.”

Fatherhood is an upcoming American comedy-drama film directed by Paul Weitz from a screenplay by Weitz and Dana Stevens, based upon the 2011 memoir ‘Two Kisses for Maddy: A Memoir of Loss and Love’ by Matthew Logelin. The film stars Kevin Hart, a single dad that brings up his baby girl after the unexpected death of his wife who died a day after their daughter’s birth. It’s inspired by a true story. ‘Fatherhood’ is

the latest project from Higher Ground Productions, the production company launched by former President Barack Obama and former First Lady Michelle Obama, and in it, Hart is joined by stars Alfre Woodard, Lil Rel Howery, DeWanda Wise, Melody Hurd and Paul Reiser. “If you could have one parent, I wish you could’ve had your mom. She would’ve been better at it,” Hart’s character opens in the trailer.

From the Sunday Times number one bestselling author Lucinda Riley, ‘The Missing Sister’ is the seventh instalment in the multimillion-copy epic series ‘The Seven Sisters’. ‘The Lost Sister’, published in May, is currently a best-seller across the world. The six D’Aplièse sisters have each been on their own incredible journey to discover their heritage, but they still have one question left unanswered: who and where is the seventh sister? They’ll search the world to find her. They only have one clue; an image of a star-shaped emerald ring. The search to find the missing sister will take them across the globe; from New Zealand to Canada, England, France and Ireland, uniting them all in their mission to at last complete their family. In doing so, they will slowly unearth a story of love, strength and sacrifice that began almost one hundred years ago, as other brave young women risk everything to change the world

its own. “Judas was my favourite song when it came out originally, so I really wanted to cover it. I am beyond excited that it’s the first to drop from this project!” Big Freedia said of the new song in a statement. “To me, ‘Judas’ is a love song about when someone does you dirty. I’ve sure had my experience with that. Who can’t relate?” The names of the other musicians who will contribute covers to the album are still being kept under wraps.

GARDEN MAGIC Citizens Information

Gardening - By Debby Looney

More great choices for large shrubbery Following last week’s article on large shrubs, I received many comments, suggestions and questions, leading me to believe that there were quite a few people unsure of what to plant in a large space. I felt at the end of the article there were definitely more plants for that list so here are some more great choices for the large shrubbery. The bottlebrush, or Callistemon, is named appropriately for the shape of its flowers which are bottle-brush like spikes of many small flowers with long stamens, giving it that brush like appearance. Usually red, they are also available in yellow and pink. They flower in summer and into autumn adding a lovely splash of colour. Their leaves are hard and spiky with arching branches. Cut them back immediately after flowering or they will not flower the following year. If they do grow out of hand, they will tolerate a hard cut back. Ceanothus, or the Californian lilac, is an often evergreen shrub bearing dark blue flowers. There are several sizes from the low creeping C. repens, to the tree like proportions of C. thyrsiflorus. An ideal candidate for the large border is C. ‘Gloire de Versailles’, which has large blue flowers from July to the end of autumn, (deciduous), or C. ‘Southmead’ which has dark blue flowers in early spring (semi-evergreen), or C. ‘Blue Mound’ which has deep blue flowers (evergreen). I find with all ceanothus that their flowering times seem to be very weather dependant! Forsythia is a large common shrub which flowers early in spring before the leaves appear. I mention it as it seems to have gone out of fashion completely, though it adds such a fantastic yellow brightness in those dark February days. People often complain that it either grows out of all proportions or that it does not flower. If pruning, do so immediately after flowering. ‘Golden Nugget’ is possibly one of

the smaller varieties at a natural five foot. An unusual, but well worth finding plant is the Sorbus reducta. It is a low 1-1.5m type of mountain ash, with all the great features of its larger tree relatives! It forms a thicket – yes, it does sucker, but does not take over, has white flowers followed by dark red berries which fade to a creamy colour. Like most mountain ashes, its autumn colour is blazing! Butterfly bushes, buddleja, are a much maligned plant as it can self seed and become a bit of a nuisance. However, it does not really self seed much in gardens where the conditions are not ideal, (ideal conditions – derelict, dry, stony waste land). Most cultivated varieties are sterile, so there is no reason to avoid them! B. colvilei is a very unusual variety, being semi-evergreen with large panicles of tubular dark pink flowers – these clusters can reach up to 20cm. B. davidii is the common butterfly bush and is available in a range of colours such as ‘Black Knight’, deep, deep purple, ‘Empire Blue’, blue flowers with orange centre, ‘Royal Red’, deep pink/maroon. One of my favourites is ‘Harlequin’ which has variegated leaves. There is a range of smaller butterfly bush available too; the ‘buzz’ series. These remain compact, up to 1m, however their flowers are not quite as impressive! To remedy that, plant breeders have come up with a new variety – the ‘Rocketstar’ series. I have only just planted one, but it promises a diminutive 80cm with the same large flowers as large varieties have. If this plant does what its creators claim, it will certainly be a hit in my garden!

advice for fathers

Father’s Day, an important celebration, takes place this Sunday. This yearly celebration is the perfect time to show our appreciation for the fathers and father figures in our lives. The importance of this day is also a great opportunity to highlight some of the information, advice and support Citizens Information can provide to fathers and their families. Some of the most common queries they are receiving from fathers and their families right now are; Paternity Benefit and COVID-19: Paternity Benefit is a payment for employed and self-employed people who are on paternity leave from work and covered by social insurance (PRSI). It is paid for two weeks and can be taken any time within the first six months following the birth or adoption of a child. For new fathers who have been receiving or currently are receiving the COVID-19 Pandemic Unemployment Payment (CPUP) or the COVID-19 Employment Wage Subsidy Scheme (EWSS), it will be treated as if you are continuing to make insurance contributions at your normal social insurance class. This means that, if you are getting PUP or EWSS, you will qualify for Paternity Benefit if you have enough social insurance contributions. If you are due to go on paternity leave and you are getting PUP, you should apply for Paternity Benefit (if you have the required social insurance contributions) and then close your PUP claim. Many enquire about other leave options for parents which may be available from their employment such as Paternity Leave, Parental Leave, Parents Leave

and Adoptive Leave. Each of these types of leave may also carry a possible social welfare entitlement by way of a paid benefit if certain PRSI requirements are met. There are several other schemes and benefits worth considering such as the Homemaker’s Scheme, the Home Carer Tax Credit, the Single Person Child Carer Tax Credit, Supports for Carers, One Parent Family Payment, Working Family Payment, Back to Education Grant, Starting your own Business and much more. “Our goal for Father’s Day is to let every father and family know that we are here to advise and support them," Frances Clifford, Kerry Citizens Information Manager, said. "Even though due to COVID-19 our drop in services are not currently available, the offices are still staffed and we are busy assisting callers and giving them the tools to make informed decisions and help them to explore options and solutions to any issues they may have. So, regardless of your query, call your local centre and we will guide you in the right direction.” For anyone needing information, advice or who have an advocacy issue, they can call a member of the local Citizens Information team in Kerry on 0761 07 7860, they will be happy to assist and make an appointment if necessary. The offices are staffed from Monday to Friday from 10am to 4pm. Alternatively, you can email at tralee@citinfo.ie or log on to www.citizensinformation.ie for further information and contact details.

South African event inspires hospice mountain run A group of local hill runners, inspired by world record holder South African Gerda Steyn, raised over €800 for the Kerry Hospice Foundation in the Gap of Dunloe last Sunday. | By Sean Moriarty Steyn is the fastest woman to complete Comrades Marathon in her native South Africa. The 98 kilometre event, run annually in the KwaZulu-Natal province of South Africa, is the world's biggest and oldest ultra-marathon race. In 2019 she won the Comrades Marathon in a record time of 5 hours, 58 minutes

and 53 seconds, becoming the first woman to complete the run in under six hours. Beaufort man Diarmuid O’Malley is a veteran of over 30 marathons and ultra-marathons, including the 2013 Comrades Race, and he was one of the organisers of Sunday’s event that catered for all abilities. He is planning to return to the famed South African event as soon as travel restrictions allow. “A week after her 2019 Comrades success, I had the pleasure to show Gerda Steyn the Gap of Dunloe route and her exact comment to me was "you have no excuse not to run Comrades again with a training route like this on your doorstep",” he told the Killarney Advertiser. Animation adventure for little Adam King Little Adam King, who stole the nation's hearts during the Late Late Toy Show last year is to feature in his own animated series. The youngster, who is a wheelchair user, encouraged people to follow their dreams, no matter what challenges they face during his debut TV appearance. His new programme 'Adam ❤ Adventure!', by award-winning Irish animation studio Kavaleer Productions, will be a preschool adventure-comedy series set in space featuring a real-life hero who explores the wonders of the galaxy through imaginative and fun-filled animation. The show will break new ground for young audiences in a number of significant ways as it will be the first Irish children’s programme to feature a wheelchair-user as protagonist. The show will promote his message of empathy and friendship, exemplified by his ‘Virtual Hug’ card. 'Adam ❤ Adventure!' kicked off development in April and has been selected for inclusion at the 2021 edition of the prestigious Cartoon Forum in Toulouse, France this coming September. “Adam stole the hearts of the nation when he appeared on the Late Late Toy Show last year," Andrew Kavanagh, CEO Kavaleer and the show’s creator, said.

"His message of following your dreams, no matter what challenges you face, inspired me to create this show. Our ethos at Kavaleer is to create innovative, ground-breaking shows that celebrate uniqueness and diversity in every child and support young hearts and minds to thrive." Adam’s father, David King, said “Our family are delighted to share this exciting news with the world! We believe in the importance and power of representation of difference in the stories we tell our children. That is why we are thrilled that Adam, our beloved son and a child with

additional needs, is going to be the star of this wonderful cartoon. Not only this, but his trusty friends Speedy (his wheelchair) and Bubby (his toy rabbit) will travel on all his adventures with him. Through this cartoon, we hope other children and families will benefit from the power of seeing difference represented in the wonderful stories and characters of 'Adam ❤ Adventure!' Our deepest thanks to Andrew and all the team at Kavaleer. From the moment we first connected, we knew Kavaleer were the right fit for our family as we share the same values. We can't wait to go on this adventure together!”

Bizarrely, the diver was inside the whale's mouth for roughly 40 seconds before being ejected. Michael Packard claimed it happened in a flash as he swam in roughly 45 feet of water - then it all went dark in an instant. Packard realised he was inside a whale's mouth and battled to find his breathing regulator before running out of oxygen and suffocating. The whale, on the other hand, had different ideas. "A humpback whale tried to eat me," Packard said. "I was in his closed mouth for about 30 to 40 seconds before he rose to the surface and spit me out. I am very bruised up but have no broken bones." Packard claimed that all he could think about during those anxious seconds was his two young sons and the possibility of dying inside the whale before the beast rejected him as a meal. Packard was released from Cape Cod Hospital in Hyannis with minor injuries but no broken bones.

Visitors 'Enchanted' by Disney movie set Thousands have been left 'Enchanted' after flocking to a Wicklow village this week as it was transformed in to a fairytale movie set. Enniskerry has undergone the massive renovation which will launch it into the global scene - as filming for 'Disenchanted', the sequel to 'Enchanted', starring Susan Sarandon, Patrick Dempsey, Amy Adams, and James Marsden, began. Disney did not reply to many requests for comment on what was going on. A

local retailer said she could not say anything because “Disney have told us not to”. A local said “it was fun at first, but now I’m browned off”. Filming took place between the hours of 7am and 10pm all this week and they will return July 6 to July 9 between the hours of 5pm and 7pm, and then on Wednesday July 21 and Thursday July 22 from 7am until 10pm. On all shoot days, the Gardai and a traffic management team will help with traffic diversions.

NASA discovers a 'cool' planet Protester parachutes in to live Euro 2020 game Before Germany's Euro 2020 match versus France on Tuesday, a climate change protester parachuted into the stadium and landed on the pitch. The paraglider was a 38-year-old German male, according to reports. He entered the venue at a sharp angle, using a bright yellow parachute with the message "Kick out oil Greenpeace" on it, and looked to

lose control after connecting with cables placed to the roof for TV cameras. During his failed stunt, the activist glided over the heads of several in the crowd. On the way in, some of his equipment was destroyed, and two people received head injuries. "We are considering various criminal charges," a police spokesman said. "Munich police have zero tolerance for political actions that put lives at risk."

NASA has discovered a ‘cool’ planet with a strange atmosphere and their scientists have said the new planet is "weird", but it’s one step closer to being like Earth. According to NASA, we might see evidence of clouds - perhaps even made of water - in this planet’s atmosphere. And because this star-and-planet system is moving at a high velocity away from Earth, hydrogen atoms escaping from the planet’s atmosphere might be readily detected. In other words, the planet could turn out to have a tail. Such atoms are almost impossible to detect even when using space-based facilities; their presence is masked both by the outer wisps of Earth’s atmosphere and by interstellar gas. But the TOI-1231 b system is moving so quick-

ly that escaping hydrogen atoms are shifted out of phase with the blocking material, where they could be detected by telescopes like Hubble. The planet's atmosphere is approximately 330 Kelvin or 56.85 degrees Celsius, making it one of the coolest, small exoplanets accessible for atmospheric studies discovered yet. "One of the most intriguing results of the last two decades of exoplanet science is that, thus far, none of the new planetary systems we’ve discovered look anything like our own solar system," NASA JPL scientist Jennifer Burt said. "Compared to most transiting planets detected thus far, which often have scorching temperatures in the many hundreds or thousands of degrees, TOI1231 b is positively frigid," Burt added.

Dingle Peninsula announced winner of Digital Town Awards Dingle Peninsula’s ‘Reimagining Creatively through Digital’ project was announced as the overall winner at the inaugural .IE Digital Town Awards. The awards were created to ‘shine a light’ on local towns, projects and people that demonstrated digital thinking and innovation for the betterment of the communities and societies that they

serve. In addition to winning the Small Town (up to 2,500 population) category prize of €9,000, Dingle Peninsula will receive an additional prize of €10,000 for their town as overall winner, bringing their total prize winnings to €19,000. Speaking at the ceremony, a .IE spokesperson recognised Dingle’s “creativity, resilience and overall excellence in delivering a unique and lasting contribution

to digital advancement in the town”. Among the highlights was a pilot initiative to increase sustainability and productivity by collecting ‘real-time’ data using sensor technology such as current and predicted weather and soil conditions, and grass growth rates. This will result in carbon efficiencies that can extend the grazing season. Localised ‘real-time’ weather data also ena-

bled tourism providers to tailor tourist packages based on changing weather conditions. The .IE Digital Town Awards mark the first phase of a €1 million investment to be delivered by .IE over the next four years, with a focus on digital enhancement and adoption in Ireland’s towns as part of its overall .IE Digital Town programme.

David's visit a highlight of the school year! | By Michelle Crean Staff and pupils were delighted to welcome a special guest to their school earlier this week and the appearance coincided with a visit of little ducklings!

Kilcummin NS were thrilled to welcome Senior Kerry footballer David Clifford and the Fossa man was kept on his toes, and looked very comfortable holding David the Duckling! David congratulated all of our Commu-

nity Games participants and county winners, Eoin Foley from Fourth Class who got a gold medal for music, First Class pupil Mia Lynch O’Doherty who got a bronze medal for art, and Junior Infant Fionn O’Donoghue who received a silver medal for art. David was also delighted to finally meet Fionn, who drew a picture for him late last year! "Eoin Foley treated the school to an outdoor concert," Principal Gillian Sheehan told the Killarney Advertiser. "Eoin’s classmate Daragh Keane, Peter

31

Keane’s nephew, led his class as they sang 'Amhrán na bhFiann' to mark David’s visit and the successes of our students. We were delighted to be able to celebrate these magnificent wins with the Kerry superstar! David had a very busy schedule as he presented medals to our Junior Infants who held their Sports Day at Kilcummin GAA pitch last Friday. A huge thanks to David for being so generous with his time. It was one of the highlights of our school year!"

Vintage club’s road run for air ambulance One sure sign that things are getting back to normal is the arrival of vintage and classic car clubs touring the Killarney area. This Sunday. Ballincollig Vintage Motor Club will be in the locality. The Corkbased club is organising its first official vintage road run in well over 18 months to raise funds for the Irish Community Air Ambulance based near Millstreet. The route is partially secret as the club does not want to draw a crowd and risk breaking social distancing or crowd-gathering rules. What is known is that participants will gather at the Tesco car park in Ballincollig on Sunday morning and make their way to Killarney for an outdoor lunch. They will return to Cork via the air ambu-

lance’s base in Rathcoole, near Millstreet. Well-known local classic car enthusiast Donie Lucey is also one of the chief fundraisers for the Irish Community Air Ambulance. “We are very grateful to the club for choosing to support the air ambulance, we rely on community donations,” he told the Killarney Advertiser. “When the participants arrive here we will give them a socially distanced tour of the base and show them how the whole operation works.” While Cork, Kerry, Clare, Limerick, Tipperary and Waterford are the counties most likely to require the air ambulance, the helicopter was also tasked in 2021 to counties Kilkenny, Wexford, Wicklow and Galway.

CHARITY RUN: Members of Ballincollig Vintage Motor Club will visit Killarney on Sunday to raise funds for the Irish Community Air Ambulance.

O’Donoghue’s transition to two-wheeled motorsport He may be better known for his prowess behind the wheel of a rally car but Colin O’Donoghue proved at the weekend that he is no slouch at the control of a motorcycle either.

WINNER: Colin O'Donogue won his first off-road motorcycle race on Sunday

O’Donoghue won the Modified section of the 2019 Killarney Historic Rally – the last event to run in the county before the pandemic set in. As the sport remains in limbo for at least another few months, the Killarney man decided to turn his attention to motorcycle racing and entered the opening round of the ProRide Enduro Championship on Sunday. He rides off-road motorcycles on private land as part of his keep fit regime for ral-

lying, but Sunday’s event at the Todds Leap off-road complex in County Tyrone was his first attempt at entering any sort of motorcycle racing event. He surprised himself by winning the expert class on board his KTM 300 EXC to such an extent that he is considering entering the entire championship. The next round takes place in Tinker’s Hill, near Newry in County Down on June 26. “I was very surprised to be honest, I did a training ride two days before and I thought I wasn’t fit enough for this, I was thinking of dropping down a class but I had entered the expert class and decided I wasn’t backing out,” he said. “I think I will commit to the championship, I will definitely go to Tinker’s Hill and see from there.”

HEALTH & FITNESS Advice - By Brian Foley Brian is available for advice and fitness consultations, Call 087 403 0894 or email info@activate.ie • www.activate.ie

Who’s in your circle? Are you happy and where you want to be with your health, where you want to be financially or are you going through the motions each day, unsure of your purpose? Are you supported by others when you’re struggling or only supported by others when things are going well? Are you looking forward to the next five, 10, 20 years of your life? If you answered “no” to any of these questions, I encourage you to look around at the people you spend your time with. Your time is your most expensive asset. Your mind is your most expensive real estate. With whom you spend your time, and those that you permit to impact your thoughts and decisions will have a great impact on your life. From the outside looking in, our gym culture is the most difficult health benefit for others to understand. Now more than ever all our brains are fed is chaos, division, selfishness and negativity. We can’t have that here. Those that thrive in that environment aren’t a good fit for us, and they won’t last long here. Either they’ll leave on their own, or we’ll tell them it’s time to go.

Years ago, when I was struggling with some people decisions (personally and business); one of my mentors told me something that continues to stick with me. It’s since been something I have said to people many times; “The people that have helped you get to where you are may not be the same people that can help you get to where you want to go.” Ask yourself these three questions; • Who’s in your circle? • Who do you need to start spending less time with? • In order to get where you want to be, what kind of people do you need to start spending more of your time with? Now it’s time to get to work. Start spending less time with those dragging you down. Start surrounding yourself with the people that won’t condone your behaviours that aren’t consistent with your goals, support your work ethic, help you to learn from your failures and will be excited to celebrate your successes. When you are ready, we are here to help. Book your complimentary consultation by visiting our website www.activate.ie.

Back to School Clothing and Footwear Allowance QUESTION: I am getting the COVID-19 Pandemic Unemployment Payment. I have one child starting school in September. Can I qualify for the Back to School Clothing and Footwear Allowance? Answer: Yes, you can. To qualify for this payment which helps with back to school costs, you must be getting a social welfare payment or taking part in a training, employment or adult education scheme. People getting the COVID-19 Pandemic Unemployment Payment, the Working Family Payment or the Back to Work Family Dividend can qualify. Your application will be means-tested and your total family income must be below a certain level for your family size. Your children must be aged between four and 22 on September 30, 2021. If they are aged between 18 and 22 they must be in full-time second-level education in a recognised school or college in the autumn of 2021. In general, you must be getting an Increase for a Qualified Child with your payment. The allowance is €150 for children aged between four and 11, and €275 for children aged between 12 and 22. It is paid automatically to many families. This means that they do not have to apply for the payment. If you qualify automatically, you will get a letter before June 21, 2021 to let you know. You need to apply online for the BTSCFA, if you do not get a letter confirming your payment. If any of your children are aged 18 or over, you must apply for the BTSCFA for them and show evidence that they are in second-level education (even if automatic payments have issued for other children in your

family). From June 21, you can apply for BTSCFA online through MyWelfare.ie. You must have a Public Services Card and a verified MyGovID account to apply online. If you have difficulties applying online, you can contact the BSCFA section on 071 91 93318 or 0818 11 11 13. The closing date for applications is September 30, 2021. SIMPLY BEAUTIFUL

Beauty - By Jill O'Donoghue

Jill is available for advice and beauty consultations, at Killarney Toning & Beauty Studio. Call 064 6632966

Facials are also suitable for men In need of rejuvenation after lockdown or looking for a great gift idea for Father's Day? All the facials we offer are suitable for both men and women. CACI treatments truly deliver visible results. It's the equivalent to a good workout in the gym, but for the face. Our gentleman's CACI facial treatment targets the razor bumps, in-grown hairs, and skin impurities. It finishes with a tightening and firming of the muscles resulting in a youthful well defined jawline. Since reopening I have seen a huge uptake on the male facials. We work with the CACI Synergy system, a medical grade machine which provides you with treatments for acne scarring, dehydrated skin, fine lines and wrinkles, and loose sagging skin. Along with offering the full facial we specialise in the eye revive which is great during these times as the eyes are highlighted. We also focus on the jowl lift which concentrates on the neck and jawline. A course of treatments is recommended for best results.

UNIQUE

What makes the CACI facial so unique is it offers real results without damaging the skin. It works deep into the basal layer of the skin, strengthening the foundation of the skin and stimulating

the growth of collagen and elastin. It originated in the medical field working on stroke patients and Bell's Palsy suffers. They discovered that the side they were working on the effected side, started to look younger and more lifted after treatments, hence its entry into the beauty industry. CACI treatments give visible results even after one treatment. The dual action of SPED microcurrent/ LED light therapy technology is so advanced and innovative. The entire process takes 80 minutes. It starts with deep cleansing using an orbital micro-dermabrasion with light therapy, followed by the ultra-sonic actuator for deep cleansing and gentle exfoliating, propelling impurities to the skin's surfaces, followed by micro current lifting using a specific technique, this also includes the LED light therapy. We then use the wrinkle comb - an alternative to Botox - which is intense light therapy. It's all finished off with a silicone mask soak in hyaluronic acid, which has an extremely cooling effect and is hydrating. We use a galvanic current to push this amazing product deep into the lower levels of the skin. A truly results driven facial suitable for both men and women. • For more information call Jill on 064 6632966.

Checklist for CAO Change of Mind Many of you are still working your way through the Leaving Cert exams but with the CAO Change of Mind deadline approaching on July 1, it is really important that you take some time to look at the details of your CAO application, particularly your course choices. This is the last opportunity for you to make changes before the final deadline at 5.15pm on the day. It has been a challenging two years, with lots of uncertainty and so much has been out of your control. What is within your control now is how you finalise your CAO choices to ensure that you give yourself the best chance of securing a place on a course you want in September. Leaving Cert results will be issued on September 3 with CAO Round 1 Offers out on September 7. To use the Change of Mind facility you simply log on to www.cao.ie, click on ‘My Application’ and log in with your CAO number, date of birth and account password.

CHECKLIST

As you review your CAO choices in the coming weeks, use the following checklist as a guide: • Have you checked your Statement of Application email from CAO and verified that all your details are correct including personal, educational and exemption details? • Have you included courses on both sides of the CAO (Level 8 and Level 7/6). This gives you the best chance of getting two offers when the Round 1 Offers come out - the top choice that you qualify for on each list. You will then have to choose which one you prefer. • Have you filled in as many of the 20 choices as you can? You have the option to fill up 10 on both sides, giving you 20 possible options for college in the new academic year. By filling all 20 choices you give yourself 20 chances of getting a college place. • Have you checked the Alert Lists on www.cao.ie? Lots of new courses have been added in several colleges since the CAO Handbook was published last September, some very recently. You can add these courses in by checking the course code on the Alert List. • Have you taken out courses that you are no longer interested in? Lots of students rush the application ahead of the February 1 deadline with the intention of coming back to look at the course choices more closely. It is not unusual for students to completely change their minds between February

and July 1. • Have you researched the detail of any course that you are including on your CAO application – take particular note of entry requirements and modules. By doing so you are giving yourself the best chance of choosing courses that you are able for, that suit you and that you are interested in. • Have you listed your courses in Order of Preference? This is the golden rule of CAO. No one knows what the points will be for 2021 until the day the Round 1 offers come out and equally you won’t know your results of exams and/or accredited grades until September 3. My advice is don’t try to second guess either of them and before 5.15pm on July 1, make sure that your course choices are listed in Order of Preference! • Have you applied the HEAR and/or DARE schemes or completed the HPAT exam? If so you will know the outcome of your applications on June 29 and the result of the HPAT exam is expected around the same time. This may influence your decisions around your choices. You have had a challenging senior cycle, all the more reason to look ahead to a brighter future. Take time to review your CAO course choices, research your options outside of CAO and make an informed decision about the best next step after the Leaving Cert! In next week’s column I will be answering your questions about CAO Change of Mind and offer stage so please send them to info@mycareerplan.ie or DM me on Instagram, Twitter or Facebook on @mycareerplan1.

Event recognises volunteers' dedication throughout pandemic A special event to thank volunteers for their dedication and work throughout the pandemic was held virtually last night (Thursday). Cathaoirleach of Kerry County Council, Cllr Patrick Connor Scarteen, hosted the event at 7pm for the Community Response Forum who provided non-emergency supports, and advice and guidance to communities around the county. The Kerry Community Response Forum is a multi-agency group of statutory and voluntary organisations which has been coordinating the community response to the COVID-19 pandemic since March 2020. It includes representatives of Kerry County Council, the HSE, An Garda Síochána, local development companies, Kerry Volunteer Centre, Kerry GAA, Local Link Kerry, Kerry Public Participation Network, Kerry Age Friendly Net-

work, Citizens Information, St Vincent de Paul, Alone, Irish Red Cross, Kerry Civil Defence and other local voluntary groups. “The Kerry Community Response Forum was one of the first to be established in the country, in recognition of the need

to support vulnerable individuals and households in the county,” Cllr Patrick Connor Scarteen said. “It provided a single point of contact for vulnerable people and those in need of assistance, and through the Community Response Forum, they were put in touch

18.6.2021 with local community groups and organisations to help them out. “We are now seeing restrictions ease and society reopen, and hopefully matters will continue to improve over the coming months. This is why we feel it is the right time to recognise the huge level of effort by the organisers, the groups and those staffing the phones.” The virtual appreciation night outlined the work of the various groups, with the Municipal District Cathaoirligh and other guests highlighting what went on behind the scenes to ensure that every call was answered and that nobody was left behind. “The work that our voluntary and community groups do around the county is amazing, and the Forum was a way to ensure that there was a formal structure behind it,” Director of Community Development with Kerry County Council, Michael Scannell, explained. “This ensured the governance and support for all groups was in place. “For years we have been highlighting the work of the various groups around the county and when the pandemic came, it was clear that they would continue doing the positive work within their communities. Our role was to provide support and back-up and now we want to thank them for their efforts."

Make rapid progress with a start-up idea RDI Hub in Killorglin is hosting the next NDRC Founder Weekend and Pre-Accelerator programme to deliver early stage startup support and get founders one step closer to the €100K Accelerator Programme. The aim of Founder Weekend and Pre-Accelerator is to help founders succeed on their journey through coaching and mentoring, with a founder-first approach delivered by international experts. The number of new startups in Ireland is up 8% vs last year and as we edge ever closer to an island of entrepreneurs early stage supports are in demand. RDI Hub member Taxamo, which was just acquired by Vertex, Inc. for approximately $200 million, will be supporting Founder Weekend. John McCarthy, Founder of Taxamo, will be speaking at the event and the company will also provide expert mentors. “We are delighted to support RDI Hub on NDRC Founder Weekend and help early stage start-ups become the next Taxamo,” Mr McCarthy said.

WHAT IS A FOUNDER WEEKEND?

Founder Weekend is a fun, welcoming event open to everyone who wants to immerse themselves in their local startup community, develop their idea with ex-

pert mentors, and even find a co-founder. Teams have 48 hours to turn a concept to reality through the presentation of a polished pitch. With plenty of spot prizes Founder Weekend is a mini-festival of early stage entrepreneurship and applications are now open at ndrc.ie/ founder-weekend. Niall Larkin, the programme manager in the RDI Hub and seasoned founder himself said it's the "best thing you can do to make rapid progress with your start-up idea". "There is nothing like getting two days of focused feedback to knock your start-up idea into shape and refine how you present it to the world."

WHAT IS A PRE-ACCELERATOR?

The Pre-Accelerator helps entrepreneurs validate their startup idea with customers and reach accelerator or investment-readiness. Over six immersive evenings across six weeks, early-stage startups take part in interactive Q&As with serial entrepreneurs and receive mentoring from NDRC programme managers and entrepreneurs who have successfully scaled startups. They receive one-to-one feedback to come away with a compelling pitch to deliver at our Showcase event to investors, corporates and more.

Sadly missed and lovingly remembered by his wife Maura, daughters, Sheila and Denise, son John, Son in-law, Grandchildren, Sister, Brother, Relations and Friends.

In a world full of people We sometimes feel alone For part of us went with you The day God called you home.

No farewell words were spoken No time to say goodbye You were gone before we knew it And only God can tell us why It broke my heart to lose you But you didn’t go alone For part of me went with you The day God called you home.

Kerry put on show for returning fans NATIONAL LEAGUE DIVISION 1 SEMI-FINAL __________________________________________________________________________________

Kerry

6-15 | Tyrone 1-14

FITZGERALD STADIUM

The various COVID-19 lockdowns and behind-closed-doors stipulations meant that Kerry supporters had to wait 15 months to see their heroes in the flesh. For the lucky few that managed to get their hands on a golden ticket, it was almost worth the wait. Around 200 people were in attendance for last Saturday’s league semi-final against Tyrone and how wonderful it was to see green and gold jerseys in the stand at Killarney’s Fitzgerald Stadium, and to hear fans – mostly families and friends of those involved – cheering on the team. Hopefully the restrictions will continue to ease in the coming weeks. Whatever about the Clare game next Saturday

(June 26), there is now real hope that there will be a significant crowd at a Killarney Munster final in July – that is, of course, if favourites Kerry and Cork reach that provincial decider. On the evidence of last weekend’s showing, Peter Keane’s side are certainly moving in the right direction. Kerry plundered their northern rivals for five goals in a scintillating first-half performance,

David Clifford getting the ball rolling by rolling a penalty past Niall Morgan in the 6th minute. The pick of the goals came in the 15th minute when Gavin White received a hand pass from Gavin Crowley before turning, spotting Niall Morgan off his line and pinging an unbelievable 45-metre lob over the Tyrone keeper’s head and into the back of the net. The context might not have been as momentous as Mikey Sheehy’s chip in 1978 but White’s effort is still, to my mind, one of the greatest goals ever scored by a Kerry footballer. And that’s saying something. Just a minute later, a spectacular flowing move involving the impressive triumvirate of Paul Geaney, David Clifford and Seán O’Shea resulted in Dara Moynihan tapping home from close range. The Spa man was terrific once again and the easy goal was a just reward for his endeav-

ours. A brace by Geaney gave Kerry a 15-point lead in first-half stoppage time. If it was a boxing match, one of Fergal Logan or Brian Dooher would have thrown in the towel. The Red Hand County gave a slightly better account of themselves in the second half with substitute Tiernan McCann finding the back of the net in the 43rd minute, but Kerry were home and dry by that point. Two points apiece by replacements Micheál Burns and Killian Spillane, four for stand-in captain David Clifford, and a late goal by Jack Barry meant that the hosts still won the second half by 1-10 to 1-7. The efforts of Brian Ó Beaglaoich, Tom O’Sullivan and Jason Foley in the full back line deserve a special mention. The latter in particular was outstanding in marshalling Conor McKenna and Darren McCurry, and he even got forward to kick a point for himself in the second half. It was one of the most commanding individual displays by a Kerry back in quite some time. Keane, as per usual, played down the significance of the result but with the likes of Shane Ryan (possibly) and Paul Murphy to come back in for the championship, Kerry fans will be hoping that their summer is just heating up.

Excellent game for the man from An Ghaeltacht. So lively.

Very imposing for such a young player. Looks to be built for this level.

We are reasonably happy. I think we’ve come out of it injury-free. Or at least I hope we have, because at the end of the day that’s our focus: to be ready for Clare in two weeks’ time. Our sports editor @ADAMMOYNIHAN couldn’t quite believe his eyes

Would perhaps like to have scored more than 0-3 but still put in his usual shift. 12

Kerry’s proud Olympic heritage This week Eamonn Fitzgerald recalls the many local Olympians who have represented Kerry and Ireland with pride OLYMPIC HERO: Killarney's Gillian O'Sullivan poses for a portrait during a Team Ireland Race Walking training session in Pheonix Park, Dublin ahead of the 2000 Olympic Games in Sydney. Pic: Brendan Moran/Sportsfile.

The Olympic Games, the greatest sports spectacle of all and the supreme test of athletes, is scheduled to go ahead in Tokyo with the opening ceremony set for July 23. It will run through until August 8. The Paralympics, meanwhile, will begin on August 25 and conclude on September 2. COVID-19 put paid to the planned 2020 Games and even though the official word is that the Games will go ahead, there is significant opposition to staging them, within Japan and worldwide, because of the deterioration of the pandemic in the host city. Others favour the games going ahead, including Joe Biden. That’s the plan but a new wave of COVID hit Japan in April and some areas of the country face restrictions until June 20. That is on Sunday next. Will all restrictions be lifted? I doubt it. Ireland has done very well coping with COVID, especially with the very successful vaccination programme, but hard to believe it Japan only began their vaccination programme in February. It is hard to countenance that lethargy considering that they knew the Games were planned for this summer. The latest information from Tokyo is that only the over-65s will be fully vaccinated by the end of July. We’ll confine this article to the Summer Olympics.

DILEMMA

It has been a dilemma for the athletes all over the world. So many have reached the qualifying standards in their chosen sport; others are close to reaching qualification and some more have decided already that they will not travel because of the dangers to their health and to their families. Governments worldwide are also keeping a close eye on developments and if the infection rate increases in

Tokyo in the next month or so, will Nphet and Dr Tony Houlihan recommend to the Irish government that our participants should pull out? No one wants a fourth wave in Ireland, now that the country is open for the most part. Think of the athletes and the sacrifices they have been making in their training programmes, not just this past year, but for many years. Representing your country in the Olympics is the motivation for athletes to put their lives on hold, preparing for the world stage. In many cases these athletes are involved in individual sports. What sacrifices they have made, on special diets and heading out in all kinds of weather, sticking to a gruelling schedule. What if they decide to go to Toyko, qualify for the final and then fail the daily COVID test? Think of golfer Jon Rahm, who is third in the world rankings. Recently he was the runaway leader in the Memorial Tournament in the USA and the most likely winner. A positive COVID test forced him to pull out when he was leading by six shots. Sportspeople dream of Tokyo and, the moment of all moments, standing on the victory podium far away from Ireland, the tricolour being raised and bending forward to receive that medal, gold, silver or bronze. That’s the prize for a successful Olympian.

KILLARNEY’S RECORD

Killarney and Kerry have a proud Olympic record and some Olympians still live in our community. They are just ordinary citizens, who have had extraordinary achievements in the Olympics. Let us start locally here in Killarney. The original Olympics were held in honour of Zeus long before the birth of Christ, but the first modern Olympics involving 14 nations was held in 1896. No locals travelled,

59

18.6.2021 but just one Kerryman. More about him later. The Hilliard family has been to the fore in the commercial life of Killarney for well over a century, but what many readers may not know is that Robert Martin Hilliard boxed in the 1928 Olympics at Amsterdam. He was the first Killarney Olympian, as far as I know. He was unfortunate to meet the eventual gold medallist in the earlier rounds and didn’t get into the medals. He was born here in Moyeightragh (Lewis Road) Killarney in 1904, one of six children and the son of a successful leather merchant. Remember Hilliard’s for leather shoes and Hilliard’s factory off High Street, a wonderful employer in the past. Robert had attended Trinity College where he excelled as a keen sportsman. He played fly-half for the TCD rugby team and was a champion boxer. He was Irish featherweight boxing champion for two years running. That silver cup is still in the Hilliard family. He was nicknamed the ‘Boxing Parson’. Reverend Robert was a revolutionary in so many ways and died young, only 33 years old, in the battle of Jarama on February 1937, having gone to Spain to fight Franco’s fascism. Christy Moore’s song ‘Viva la Quinta Brigada’ about Irish members of the international brigades in the Spanish Civil War brought this to light.

GILLIAN O’SULLIVAN

In more recent times, Gillian O’Sullivan from Minish was one of Ireland’s most successful athletes. As early as 1994 she wore the Irish singlet in the World Junior Championships 5000m at Lisbon. She was 10th in the Sydney Olympics in 2000. I have vivid memories of red-haired Gillian stepping it out on her daily training sessions in her local area. She reaped her due rewards and set the unofficial world record in race walking for the 5000m walk in Belfast. What a pity the IAAF refused to verify it. I wonder why? She won so many big races. In 2003 she won the silver medal in the World Championships 20k at Paris. Then the big one. In 2004 at the Athens Olympics, she was one of the big Irish contenders for a medal in the 20k walk, but cruelly she suffered a serious back injury beforehand and had to withdraw. What a disappointment for the Minish star and for her many supporters in Killarney and elsewhere. Gillian was a mighty athlete in a lonely sport and the next time you reach the roundabout at Lissivigeen Cross you will notice the sign for the Gillian O’Sullivan roundabout, a fitting tribute to one of Killarney’s great sports stars. Councillor Michael Gleeson, recently retired, a fellow Minish sportsman and near neighbour, ensured that Gillian’s outstanding achievements would not

HAMMER: Dr Pat O'Callaghan won gold medals in the hammer throw in 1928 and 1932. O'Callaghan worked in St Finan's Hospital, Killarney.

be forgotten. She now runs her own personal fitness business in Cork. ROWING Joining Gillian at the 2004 Olympics was Fossa man Paul Griffin, who became the first Kerry rower to compete in the Olympics. He made a huge effort and their Irish lightweight four made it all the way to the final. They gave us great value, before finishing in sixth place, out of the coveted medals, but a very brave effort in the Irish singlets. The determined Paul was young enough and sufficiently motivated to give it one more try on the world stage. He spent the next four years preparing for the Beijing Olympics along with his fellow rowers from the Muckross club. Paul Griffin went in the lightweight coxless fours and in that boat with him was Muckross man Cathal Moynihan. No medals but what an achievement by the Killarney men. Mention too of the towering Seán Casey. He went in the Irish Heavyweight Pairs team with Jonno Devlin. They qualified for the B final. There is another Olympic connection with Killarney.

DR PAT

Dr Pat O’Callaghan was a native of Kanturk. He was the first Irishman to win Olympic gold under the Irish flag as distinct from the British flag - and he won gold medals in the hammer event at Amsterdam in 1928 and again in Los Angeles in 1932. Some of our older readers will remember him as a doctor in St Finan’s Hospital where he worked

with Dr Eamonn O’Sullivan, the man who trained Kerry to win eight All-Ireland senior football titles. I recall Brian O’Callaghan, son of Dr Pat, as a well-known intercounty player with the Tipperary footballers and a central figure for Clonmel Commercials club when they won threein-a-row from 1965 to 1967. He was a very tough defender, and that is a euphemism. I remember him landing Mikey Lyne a haymaker early on in the Munster Club Championship game between Clonmel Commercials and East Kerry. It shook the Faugh and Legion man, but didn’t floor him. He bided his time and delivered the retaliatory blow at an opportune time, shifting a few molars. No problem with that as Brian O’Callaghan was a dentist by profession, so he could self-medicate. Other great Kerry Olympians include John Pius Boland going right back to the first Olympics in Athens 1896. A native Dub, he represented South Kerry in the British Parliament 1900-1918. He won Olympic gold in tennis. Then there was the remarkable achievements of Edmund Barrett. This Ballyduff native won a special treasured medal in…? You guessed it, hurling. He won a senior All-Ireland hurling medal in 1901 with the City of London team that defeated Cork representatives Redmond’s in the final. In 1908 he won a bronze medal for wrestling in the London Olympics 1908. To the best of my recollection the Crusher Casey brothers from Sneem, the world-famous world champions,

never took part in the Olympics. I know that Steve, Paddy, Tom and Mick won the All-England Rowing Championship in 1936 and were odds on to compete in the Berlin Olympics in that year, but they were disqualified because Steve and Paddy had wrestled professionally. Other Kerry Olympians include Eamonn Fitzgerald, the Castlecove teacher, who battled on bravely through a serious ankle injury in the 1932 Los Angeles Olympics to qualify for the final. He was edged out of a bronze medal by less than an inch in the hop, step and jump event. I’m also thinking of two great athletes I got to know in in the UCD grounds Dublin, where they were training for the Olympics. Tom O’Riordan from Ardfert ran in the 1964 Olympics in Tokyo. His speciality was the 5000m. Another brave Kerryman was Brosna-born Jerry Kiernan, a teacher in Dublin. You could not get a more determined sportsperson. While all of Ireland was willing John Treacy to a silver medal in the marathon at the 1984 Los Angeles Olympics, I kept an eye out for Jerry and he didn’t disappoint. He ran himself into the point of exhaustion on the Los Angeles streets to finish a very creditable ninth on that gruelling 26 miles and 385 yards. The Kerry tradition in Olympics continues as the Kingdom hopefuls prepare for Tokyo 2021. Let’s hope it comes ahead as scheduled.

SPECIAL OLYMPICS

Let us never forget the achievements of Michael O’Leary, who won a medal at the Special Olympics World Summer Games in Athens 2011. The Countess Grove golfer, better known as ‘Seve’, won a silver medal in a brilliant display at the Glyfada golf course, just outside Athens. He was four shots adrift of the winner, David Alexander of Great Britain. He was still nine strokes clear of third placed Finn Samu Alander. Mighty stuff, Seve. Mike Seve is still delivering the goods, holding off stiff opposition in the Captain’s Prize at Deerpark Pitch & Putt last weekend to win the coveted competition. I can’t end without mentioning that late great multi-sports man Connie Brosnan, a follower of several sports. He had a kidney transplant in 2007 and subsequently represented Ireland at golf in the World Transplant Games in Dublin in 2010, where he won a silver medal. He was on the Irish team again at Malaga in 2017, He often reminded me of another first for the bould Connie. He scored the first hole-in-one at the newly opened Ross Golf Club in 1994, just a stone’s throw from his home. What club did you use Connie? “A touch of a 7… And I held back on it.” God be good to the great Connie.
