Macroom
ABOUT TIME: Minister of State at the Department of Transport, Tourism and Sport, Brendan Griffin announced on Wednesday night that the long-awaited Macroom by-pass has been given the go-ahead.
Macroom bypass finally gets the green light The long-awaited €280m Macroom bypass – which will alleviate long travel times for Kerry motorists – has finally been given the go-ahead by Central Government. | By Sean Moriarty
EXCLUSIVE
On Wednesday night, news broke that the new 22km stretch of dual-carriageway from Ballyvourney village to Coolcower, east of Macroom, was confirmed. It’s expected that construction will take around three-and-a-half years to com-
plete. The new road will reduce journey times between Cork city and County Kerry and will be welcomed by tourism and industry officials in both counties. The proposed new road development will begin to the west of Ballyvourney, tying into the existing N22 on the main
Cork/Killarney/Tralee route, bypassing the town of Macroom before crossing the River Laney and River Sullane and re-joining the existing N22 at Coolcower – relieving congestion and traffic jams at peak hours in Macroom. Along the existing N22 there are many accesses and junctions which have inadequate sight distance. Overtaking opportunities along the route are limited. In recent years, the high accident rates continued, with the N22 rank-
ing as one of the highest fatal and serious collision routes in the country. The section east of Ballyvourney is a mixture of single carriageway widths, with no hard shoulders or verges and prone to slow moving traffic. “I am glad to have worked hard from within Government to help secure approval of this significant national road project for the South West region of the country,” Kerry TD, Minister of State for Transport, Tourism and Sport, Brendan Griffin, said. “The N22 project further opens up the National Road Network in the country, providing a better connection for traffic travelling between Cork and Kerry. I also welcome the benefits that this project will deliver, such as connecting rural communities and improved inter-urban accessibility for the South West region and my home county.”

Rubbish dumped in Cathedral car park | By Michelle Crean A local businessman was left angered to find a bag of rubbish strewn around a car park after being dumped on Wednesday.

Club pay respects to the late Liam Murphy Dr Crokes GAA Club members turned out in force this week to bid a final farewell to former star player and vice-president Liam Murphy, who passed away last Friday. | By Eamonn Keogh Liam, of Marian Terrace and late of St Anne's Road, Killarney, passed away peacefully in Heather Lee Nursing Home in Killarney. The famed black and amber flag was draped over Liam's coffin following the removal from O'Shea's Funeral Home on Monday evening and again after the Funeral Mass in St Mary's Cathedral on Tuesday morning. Past and present Dr Croke’s players and officers provided guards of honour on both occasions. During a prominent playing career Liam won seven East Kerry Senior Football Championship medals (O’Donoghue Cup), captaining Dr Crokes to a 2-04 to 1-02 victory over local rivals Legion in the 1960 final. His son Connie went on to match Liam's record, also winning seven O'Donoghue Cups between 1986 and 2000. Liam was a proud father watching Connie enjoy an illustrious playing career with Kerry from 1987 to 1995, winning an All-Star award in 1989 and captaining the county in 1992, the same year his Man of the Match

performance helped Dr Crokes clinch their first All-Ireland Club title. Liam is survived by his wife Sheila, daughters Mary, Sheila and Kate, sons Jerry and Connie, sons-in-law Kieran, Pat and Eoghan, daughters-in-law Catherine and Yvonne, grandchildren David, Alison, Juliette, Steven, Trish, Adam, Laura, Mark, Lia and Tara, and extended family. He was laid to rest in the New Cemetery, Killarney.
Fred McDonogh, who runs Red Chair Recruitment on New Street, was annoyed to discover the debris, which included empty bottles, letters, a tea towel and other items of rubbish in a car parking space in the Cathedral car park, just before lunchtime. He had been taking a client to a job interview and after exiting his car found the items on the ground nearby. “It’s a growing issue in Killarney,” Fred, who handed one of the letters with a name on it into the local Gardai, told the Killarney Advertiser. “For tourists it’s a bad first impression of Killarney town. The Council are doing a good job out night and day cleaning up as well as Tidy Towns and other groups – it’s insulting to them.” Fred, who lives in Rossbeigh, says dumping is a growing epidemic around the country, including where he lives. “The rising tide of rubbish we’re being hit with is a huge epidemic and one that’s hitting the country at the moment. It’s a noticeable issue and it’s unacceptable. If they can’t afford to dump

their rubbish why leave it on the street near where young kids are walking to school with the possibility of vermin around it? The Council was unavailable for comment.
Clash of the cash for Muckross footballer! | By Sean Moriarty Not even appearing on RTE’s Winning Streak to bag himself a pile of cash could stop one local footballer from giving up a big game this weekend! East Kerry footballer Michael Foley, whose name was called out last weekend to appear on the popular show, was shocked to learn that it was clashing with a Kerry Senior Football Championship quarter-final against Dingle tomorrow (Saturday). However, as he cannot be in two places at once – and his older sister Melissa has decided to fly from London to take the Muckross man’s place in the Winning Streak hot seat. Michael will line out for East Kerry for the big game which will be broadcast on RTE 2 – while Melissa will appear on the opposite channel on RTE One at the same time.
TV OR FOOTBALL: Melissa pictured with her brother Michael.
And Michael says that he is concentrating more on the big game rather than the big gameshow! “To be honest, I haven’t given it a single thought as I am focusing on the big game,” he said. “I know Melissa will do the family proud and I’m grateful for her stepping in in my hour of need! Regardless we will have a celebration on Saturday after the show and game is done.”

Celtic Whiskey Bar & Larder wins ‘Best Gastropub’ award
Over the past number of months staff in AIB Kerry, Limerick and Clare came together to support the worthy cause for their colleague, who has a child undergoing treatment in Crumlin. Together they raised €5,000 with a further €5,000 matched by AIB CEO Colin Hunt. “Everybody is aware of the amazing work done in Crumlin so we were delighted to do our bit to support such a worthy cause,” Colm Cooper, Assistant Manager of the AIB Killarney branch, told the Killarney Advertiser. “Our staff engaged in various activities including coffee mornings in our branch-
es, wellness events, sponsored walks and raffles. “In addition to this we were very appreciative of the support from our customers who made generous donations and sponsored and supported our various fund raising initiatives.” He added that they were thrilled to be joined by AIB CEO Colin Hunt for the presentation last Friday. “Colin congratulated everybody on the fundraising efforts for such a worthy cause and very kindly committed to AIB matching the amount raised. This brought the total funds donated to Crumlin Children’s Hospital on the day to €10,000.”
A well-known local business has been awarded ‘Best Gastropub’ at the National Hospitality Awards. | By Michelle Crean The Celtic Whiskey Bar & Larder in New Street was up against some of the country’s best bars, restaurants and hotels at the Shelbourne Hotel in Dublin. They were amongst four other finalists to win the Best Gastropub award, narrowly missing out on the overall trophy to Matt the Thresher in Dublin. Six other businesses in Kerry were also presented with top accolades. Open since March 2016, the bar is owned by Alistair Alpine who runs the Celtic Whiskey Shop in Dawson Street, Dublin 2. “We think we won the award for striving to be innovative in everything we do,
great customer service and a focus on local produce for our seasonal menus," Bar Manager Luke Crowley Holland told the Killarney Advertiser. "We strive to deliver an exciting, unique and holistic experience at the Celtic Whiskey Bar & Larder and it is always great to be acknowledged for our efforts with such a prestigious award." The Celtic Whiskey Bar & Larder is home to Ireland’s largest whiskey collection, with over 1200 whiskeys from Ireland and beyond; as well as a range of over 50 Irish craft gins, an extensive — and directly sourced — wine list and 12 craft beer taps, and bespoke cocktails, each individually designed by their resident mixologists.

RETIREMENT: Former Killarney Town Engineer Donal Mangan makes a presentation to Patrick 'Patsy' McCarthy who retired this week after nearly 34 years of service in local and County Councils. Picture: Sean Moriarty
Council worker retires after 34 years service | By Sean Moriarty Current and former work colleagues gathered at the Killarney Municipal depot in Woodlands Industrial Estate to bid farewell to Patrick ‘Patsy’ McCarthy who retired this week after nearly 34 years of service in local and County Councils.
EXCLUSIVE
The Glenflesk man was a popular mem-
ber of team since he started in 1986. Over the years he travelled the highways and byways of the county, particularly in the Rathmore area, as part of County Council’s road gangs. In recent years he was employed as a caretaker by the town council. “There is no doubt about it, we enjoyed our time on the road,” Patsy told the Killarney Advertiser.
One of his first jobs for the Council was the construction of the ornate stone wall that runs from opposite the camping and caravan site to the entrance to Hilliard’s Farm on the Muckross Road. When that was completed in late 1986 he was one of the first group of workers to be assigned to the under-construction bypass road. Former Town Engineer, Donal Mangan,
yesterday (Thursday) paid tribute to the work ethic and loyalty. “He was an exceptional guy, he had a great head and had a solution to every problem,” he said. “And he was a very loyal man to his employers.” Killarney Municipal District officer, Eileen O’Donoghue, praised his high standard of work. “Patsy was totally dedicated to his work and worked hard throughout his career with the Council. He planned each job with great precision before commencing the job and each job would be completed to a very high standard,” she said. Patsy is going to spend his new found free time with his six grandchildren but he is not finished with the Council just yet. He will dedicate a few hours a week to the upkeep of the new burial ground at
Make-up artist up for national award | By Michelle Crean One local businesswoman is up for a national award next week alongside some of Ieland’s best beauty industry figures. Make-up Artist Annette O'Brien is in the running for ‘Best Make-up Influencer 2019’ at the The Best Beauty Blog Awards on Wednesday, taking place in House Dublin. Other tops names nominated for awards include Rosie Connolly, Suzanne Jackson of ‘So Sue Me’, Pippa O Connor, Rosanna Davidson and Roz Purcell. Annette, who has worked on a shoot with TV presenter Lucy Kennedy for the Irish Daily Mail magazine, has seen her down to earth, no nonsense beauty blog, grow in popularity in recent years. And it’s her second national award nomination this year as she won ‘Celebrity MUA of the Year 2019’ at the Irish Makeup Awards, and locally won ‘Busi-
nesswoman of the Year 2019’ with the Brides of Kerry magazine. Annette’s blog Annette O’Brien Makeup is incorporated into her website and followers of beauty trends love it. “The blog is more of a hobby,” Annette told the Killarney Advertiser this week. “I do get approached by different companies to feature their products but I don’t really do that because it’s more about the products I use that I like.” Recently Annette blogged about a workshop she took in at Brown Thomas with Charlotte Tilbury, other topics include make-up tips while she was on a recent girly holiday and top products she loves. “It’s very down to earth,” she said. Winning is all down to public votes however, she added. To vote go to www. beautyblogawards.com and pick Annette’s category.

Columnist ANNE LUCEY gives her take on happenings in Killarney, Kerry and beyond
The country will move on with or without the Greenway I have been sitting through the fascinating hearing into the South Kerry Greenway for almost two weeks.
PUBLIC CONSULTATION
The Council certainly has engaged in public consultation – but the Council’s definition of consultation does not accord with the meaning of consultation in south Kerry - that much is crystal clear. Terrible divisions have arisen between Cahersiveen and the countryside because of the Compulsory Purchase Order (CPO) mechanism – am I missing something here, or is this the county which celebrated ‘The Field’? What part of the tie to the land do Council officials in Tralee and councillors throughout this county not understand?
“
“Previously in this column I have spoken about the Greenway being paved with good intentions, and I still believe it is”
“
It is a microcosm of the gulf there now between the elite governing classes and the “tuaithe”. Remember the way, anciently you would describe the two classes in Ireland – cleir is tuath? Well, now it is Government and the people. The Council is outlining its case for planning, and for compulsory purchase of its strips of farmland. It is needed for economic regeneration of the West Iveragh region, they say, advancing their argument on “the common good”. Previously in this column I have spoken about the Greenway being paved with good intentions, and I still believe it is, but the bulldozing of the project by, dare I say it a Council as a body under instruction from central Government, which really should stick to filling potholes, has had terrible repercussions. People are actually traumatized - it has been stated. One councillor had the cheek to go into the hearing and say they were disingenuous - I hope he knocks on their doors for a vote in five years’ time.
The hearing has been told repeatedly, that the executive moved to CPO in December 2014 when agreement could not be reached with everyone. Now there is one huge context to this which is getting no airing. It’s the why and the wherefore and it explains the urgency by the Council and the pressure they were under. I was at the meeting in Ballyheigue around Christmas 2014 and everyone wanted the Greenway - but there was an urgency - the grant funding was at risk. I got my hands on and checked the December 2014 approved minutes. The word “contingent” is used. Grant funding was “contingent” on the project being completed by December 2016. It was not possible to continue land negotiations “indefinitely”.
URGENCY
This is a different thing to agreement being difficult to reach. This is the urgency and this urgency was coming from central Government - it was clearly communicated. The minutes also show that the strongest warning against the CPO came from councillor Johnny Healy-Rae – he asked management to refrain from go-
ing down the CPO route – 90 percent were agreeable and the 10 percent that were not had "genuine" reasons - such as land division, he said. He pleaded for more time – February 2015. He got the time, but the CPO was voted through by a majority of councillors in February – cognisent of the money running out, but forgetful of what a trauma a CPO is in this county reflected so well by John B Keane.
WHAT'S THE COST?
Now, how much state money was actually lost? I want to know this because the thing was not signed off on by December 2016. This is a perfect example of how Government in this country works: Council management in Kerry had the sword of Damocles hanging over them from central Government via The Department of Transport’s Alan Kelly, who announced the Greenway as part of the national Greenway strategy in March 2014, without his homework being done. Then, someone somewhere on high let it be known €4m was at stake unless the Council moved quickly. The Council whipped the councillors into line, and in turn the pressure fell on a few small farmers in south Kerry. So, the big guns in Dublin put pressure on the Council in Kerry, who in turn put pressure on the small farmers in south Kerry to sign up or else the project for the common good would be gone. The country will move on with or without the Greenway in south Kerry – but it will take years for the pressure sores applied from on high and passed on “for the common good” to heal. That’s the way I see it. Memory is long in south Kerry.
Free travel in rural Ireland Ryan Tubridy’s grandfather Todd Andrews was responsible for pulling a railway out of Cahersiveen 60 years ago – and the blind irony about it is that they’re still trying to fill the gaps now in rural transport! Transport and Tourism Junior Minister
Brendan Griffin says he is not finished with rural transport. His lift scheme in Castlemaine is a spectacular success and has carried 3,000 people, costing €10,000 a year all in. Shortly there will be the new hackney service in Glencar. The idea I floated with him is a voucher system for all rural dwellers, town and
country. Say, everyone in the countryside gets a €12 voucher to go towards a weekend taxi. Dublin people use busses, trains and the Luas - all heavily subsidised for their transport, he said. I suggested that if people in Killarney got the vouchers, they could all go
Boris and I
Allow me to gloat. I have long espoused the notion that Boris was the best man for the job. Readers of this column are shocked that I don’t hate Boris and that I defend him and actually half admire his style – or maybe lack of it! The crumpled suit and the “academic” look suggests a person who is not too vain, but is concerned with hexameters and alexandrines and fusty stuff and he’s a craic and a half - I hear - and does not take himself too seriously or anything else, which may be his Achilles heel. At any rate, this week has come close to seeing a breakthrough in Brexit under Boris that has only ever been predicted in the Killarney Advertiser. Every other journalist in Ireland appears to have misread Boris, even some who worked with him in Brussels when he was scooping them all, so busy were they trying to pigeonhole him as another Trump another Erdogan etc. I am thinking of currying favour and sending back copies directly to Downing Street of the columns predicting his rise, his success and the solution to Brexit, which at all times was Ireland talking to England outside the EU box – with Boris in charge. It is time we got back to celebrating the force of personality in leadership and not seeing charisma as something simply to be cynical about, methinks!
down to Kilgarvan for a night! Minister Griffin said nothing to this – but he is looking at use of the free travel in rural Ireland. In other words, a lot of people in rural Ireland do not use the free travel and there should be some system, he thinks, where they can instead swap their entitlement for a local service. It’s a start - but I think everyone over the age of 18 in Kerry should get 52 €12 vouchers towards transport of all kinds.

New school bench encourages kindness The importance of friendship and kindness is the focal point of a new bench installed in one local school this week | By Michelle Crean The Parents Council at Gaelscoil Faithleann organised a kindness bench with the message ‘Is fearr cairde ná ór’ – ‘friends are better than gold’ written across it, to remind all in the school to be kind to each other. “We are delighted to have this bench here – it is a focal point with a strong reminder that we all need, of the importance of friends and kindness,” Chair of the Parents Council, Mary Carroll, said. “Children learn so much each day in school, but one of the most important messages for all of us is that if you can be anything in this world, be kind.” The production of the bench was a team effort over the summer, turning it into a work of art with a message. Coupled with this, the Gaelscoil this week had a very interesting parents talk on cyber safety and behaviour online from the ‘Children of the Digital Age’ group, and according to Mary the message there was to behave online as you would in the real world – be kind in both.
“It was an amazing talk by Children of the Digital Age, with the large attendance of parents given stark insights and information into the digital world by Jason O’Mahony. He said that the biggest danger online is ourselves, and our belief that we are in control and safe. We download lots of free Apps – but there is nothing free and these Apps can garner a lot of information about us which is sold onto third parties.” Mary added that one of the most interesting aspects of his talk that sets it apart from other cyber safety talks, was his discussion on the psychology of our online behaviour. “We heard that the impacts of social media on young people are huge as they are looking at unrealistic lives and it has been shown that the more image based Apps they are exposed to the more comparisons they make with themselves. Communication is key – talking to your children and making sure they can come to you about anything they see online is most important.”
The 20-year-old superstar was announced as a GOAL Ambassador by former Kerry football great and GOAL board member, Jimmy Deenihan, in Tralee earlier this week. “It’s great to work with an organisation like GOAL to help with the work they do overseas,” said Clifford. “I’m looking forward to the opportunities I will have with GOAL and discussing their work with many more people. It’s important as a younger player to speak to children and young people about what we can all do to help others and be more aware of issues around the world.” Clifford joins an elite team of GOAL sports ambassadors including Dublin GAA stars Bernard Brogan, Jack McCaffrey and Cian O’Sullivan, rugby star Jamie Heaslip, Olympic hockey silver medallist Róisín Upton, and Middleweight boxing champion Andy Lee.

Warning to motorists during deer rutting season The Irish Deer Commission is urging motorists to drive with caution in the coming weeks as the deer rutting season reaches its peak. From early October until November there is an increased incident of road traffic accidents involving deer as male deer go in search of females and younger males are ousted by dominant males forcing deer to cross roads and motorways. The Irish Deer Commission is calling on motorists to be vigilant at dawn and dusk, when deer are most active, particularly in high risk areas such as woodlands and mountains.
Drivers in high risk areas should reduce speed where they see a warning sign, and stay alert. “Prepare to stop, never swerve as you could hit another obstacle or oncoming vehicle,” Damien Hannigan, from the Irish Deer Commission, advises. “When you see a deer dip your headlights as the full beam may cause the deer to freeze. If a deer has crossed in front of your vehicle, be aware that others may follow. Do not approach an injured deer. If you are involved in a deer road traffic accident or come across a deer that has been involved in a road traffic accident, immediately contact the local Gardaí.”

Rent a chair at Ilona Louise Hair Salon A newly renovated hair salon which has a beautiful contemporary feel, has an opportunity to rent a chair to two self-employed hairdressers. Ilona Louise Hair Salon in Ballycasheen is run by experienced stylist Ilona McCubbrey. She first established her business in 1992 in New Street before later moving to Ballycasheen. She has a very strong client base, and after renovating her salon just recently, is now interested in renting a chair to two self-motivated, self-employed hairdressers. “It’s the ideal opportunity for two self-motivated stylists to rent a chair
each, and build up a large clientele,” Ilona told the Killarney Advertiser. “You can be self-employed in a newly renovated salon with no set up costs. It’s a highly populated area, has plenty of storage and is very centrally located with free parking for clients.” With eight work stations and two basins, there’s ample room inside, and there’s reasonable rent a chair rates, she added. For more information phone Ilona on 087 6314145.

Making each mile count Local runners plan to tackle marathon in aid of local school | By Michelle Crean Five runners will push their endurance and strength to the limits next week – as they take on 26.2 miles – all in aid of a local school. On Saturday, October 27, a group of Glenflesk runners will bravely try to conquer the challenge of completing the Dublin City Marathon – and intend to raise funds for Knockanes National School Parents Association. Runners Niamh O’Connor, Eileen Dineen, Mary Doherty, Marian O’Connell, Shane Dennehy and Nicole O’Brien hope funds raised will be donated to the school to help in the completion of a sensory room and to purchase extra
physical education resources for the 63 pupils that attend. Sensory rooms are special spaces within a school that allow students of all abilities to self-regulate, rebalance and have their sensory needs met. Such a room will provide a calm and relaxed environment that can be enjoyed by all pupils at different times throughout the school day, explained Principal Lucy O’Sullivan. With a strong sporting tradition, particularly in the GAA, Knockanes National School is also ready and set to purchase further sporting equipment, providing pupils with the opportunity to build on their talents in areas such as basketball, gymnastics, athletics and

dance. “These funded projects will enable all pupils to become more active throughout the school day, contribute to their sense of well-being and allow for better learning and creativity in the class-
room. We wish our team of runners all the best as they embark on this test of endurance and strength. Their time and effort are very much appreciated by all the pupils, staff and parents of Knockanes National School.”

KILLARNEY CARDIAC RESPONSE UNIT
18.10.2019
Every second counts Our mission is to assist the National Ambulance Service in Killarney to calls relating to heart attacks, cardiac arrests, choking & stroke. The Killarney Cardiac Response Unit is a voluntary Unit of approximately 40 volunteers, from all sectors of society, who respond to 999/112 emergency Cardiac Phone calls. We are activated once a Cardiac call is made to Ambulance control and cover an area of 7km from the centre of Killarney Town. The Responders have a Pager/Radio on them which is linked in with a control phone through the National Ambulance Service. We work alongside and under the control of the National Ambulance Service. We are not here to
replace the Ambulance Service but to complement them by providing care and utilising those vital few minutes as every second counts, until The National Ambulance Service arrive on scene. An out of Hospital Cardiac arrest has the worst possible outcome for survival, mainly because resuscitation is often delayed or not given. It is Vital that resuscitation is started as soon as possible following a cardiac arrest. As of September 2019 we have responded to over 660 emergency calls.
Chain of Survival: the best possible chance A sequence of steps has been developed to provide the best possible chance for survival for a patient with a cardiac arrest, these are described as the links in the chain of survival. Like any chain, the chain of survival is only as strong as the weakest link. And so each link is of equal value and importance. 1. Early Access: “If no one makes that
phone call or delay in calling 999/112 2. Early CPR 3. Early Defibrillation 4. Early ALS (Advanced Life Support) 5. Early Post Resuscitation w/ Care Take Action: CHECK - Is the person unresponsive and not breathing. CALL - Get someone to call 999/ 112. COMPRESSIONS - Push hard and fast in the centre of the chest.

This week we have top advice from diet to supplements to help you regain your lost energy.
Fighting fatigue Life is definitely more hectic than it once was and whether you are a man or a woman, young or old, everyone seems to be looking for more energy. Of course, if you are suffering from serious fatigue you should pay your GP a visit to rule out any medical issue which may be causing your symptoms. Some people may struggle with complete exhaustion where they feel every muscle in their body is aching, but for most people it may not be this severe but they still struggle to cope and function on a daily basis. A healthy balanced diet is essential. Never skip breakfast, or any meal, as your body has been fasting over night and needs a jolt to get the day started. This also kick starts your metabolism. Avoid foods high in sugar as they will give you a sudden “burst of energy” but will also result in a rapid drop in energy leaving you feeling exhausted. Some other key things to remember are:
•C O-ENZYME Q10: Your cells use it to produce energy.
• SLEEP: May sound obvious. Aim for seven to eight hours a night and ensure you are relaxed before going to bed. If possible a nap for 20-30minutes during the day may also help.
•M ELISSA: Combination of relaxing herbs together with magnesium to relax and L-Theanine one hour before bed to aid a restful night’s sleep.
•E XERCISE: It really does help. A brisk walk will leave you feeling more energised, not less. •D RINK WATER THROUGHOUT THE DAY: Even slight dehydration can leave you feeling tired and lifeless. • WATCH YOUR STRESS LEVELS: Stress and anxiety can leave you feel-
ing physically and mentally exhausted regardless of how much sleep you get. While these lifestyle changes are guaranteed to make a difference to your energy levels in the long term, there are also some excellent supplements which will help you! Some of these include:
Get children into the saving habit CU plan fun filled Junior Account Day Tomorrow (Saturday) there’ll be plenty of entertainment in Killarney Credit Union for their annual Junior Account Day. Children, aged from newborns to 16-year-olds are being invited with their parents/guardians to the Beech Road branch from 11am until 1pm, to become a member of the credit union. “We have had a Junior Account Day for the past few years and it has been very successful,” Karena McCarthy, Marketing & Youth Officer said. “We have free face painting, balloons, gifts and refreshments for those that join up on the day. Our credit union mascot Rua will be on hand to welcome our new members and we have key players from St Pauls Basketball Club calling in to meet some of our younger members, as well as the Lily of Killarney.”
Membership of Killarney Credit Union is open to those living or working in the Killarney Credit Union common bond, a geographic area which covers most of South Kerry from Firies to Ballinskelligs and Glenflesk, including Killarney, Kenmare and Cahersiveen town. “We would encourage parents/guardians to avail of this opportunity to join their child up to the credit union. We operate a school’s savings scheme in many of the local primary schools and this is the ideal time for them to join up and start the savings habit. A credit union account is something that they will have for life and all newborn accounts (up to 2 years) opened get a free €20 lodged to their account as a gift from the credit union. Parents can also easily transfer funds electronically to their child’s account and build up savings for their child’s future.”
•T YROSINE: Ideally taken during periods of low motivation and poor concentration, helps to focus the mind, although it’s not suitable if you have high blood pressure. •P ASSIFLORA: Tincture which may help alleviate symptoms of stress and anxiety.
•B VITAMIN: A good quality B Complex, which contains all of your essential B Vitamins, is a must. It helps raise your tolerance levels and coping capabilities; also helps energy levels. Take one every morning after breakfast. •O MEGA 3: Your body needs the “Good Fats” to function. If your diet is deficient, then supplement with a good fish oil such as Eskimo, MorEPA or Krill, choose from liquid or capsules. Other recommended products include: Solo Nutrition MultiFifty, Nature's Plus Source of Life Gold and TerraNova Nutrition Life Drink. For the month of October there’s €10 off Revive Active in store at Horan’s on Beech Road. If you are currently on medication, some of these remedies may not be suitable, however our consultants are happy to discuss this with you. Until next time, From all at Horan’s Stay healthy.
LOCAL HERO: Alan O'Neill who selflessly jumped in to help a man being attacked in Killarney town last week.
Local hero breaks up street flight A local hero came to the rescue by bringing one man to safety during a street fight in Killarney town last week. Alan O’Neill from Killarney, who was on his lunchbreak, selflessly jumped in to help a man being attacked in a shocking daylight brawl on Barrys Lane, just off High Street, at around 1pm on Thursday last. Alan brought the man to the safety
of a local pub as Gardai rushed to the scene. Killarney Garda confirmed that a male and female were arrested on public order offences and appeared in court this week. “It’s hard to pass something like that,” Alan told the Killarney Advertiser. “He was being attacked and I tried to help him. I couldn’t walk by and did my best to break it up.”

Last Friday night celebrated another successful year by dividing up a staggering €1,112,000 between the six tier charities nominated by the annual Ring of Kerry charity cycle.
Iveragh and Áras Mhuire. “Even the tier-three charities, who each got €2,000, were delighted,” he added. “That figure will keep a small organisation running for a whole year.” This year marked its 36th running of the event and since its inception it has raised over €16 million for charitable organisations both locally and nationally. “We are an international charity event at this stage,” he added. “We have people who come from Texas every year to participate. It’s about everyday people coming together and giving generously of their time to participate, to fundraise and to get involved.” Every year, over 1,200 volunteers and just one part-time employee make the event happen after months of hard work, careful planning and close community collaboration. “We could not do it without our volunteers,” Cathal said.

REUNION: Former students from Colaiste Iosagain, Ballyvourney at a special past pupils reunion in Scott’s Hotel, Killarney on Tuesday night. Picture: Eamonn Keogh
School reunion sparks Irish language debate | By Sean Moriarty Past Kerry-based pupils of Coláiste Iosagain in Ballvourney County Cork met in Killarney this week for a reunion. The college, which was first opened in 1933 was purpose built to revive the Irish language in the early years of the State. The school was familiar to many people throughout Munster and further afield as an educational establishment up to its closure in 1989. This week’s two day reunion was organised by former Fine Gael councillor Johnny ‘Porridge’ O'Connor and Gerard Doyle. The boarding school is still a major landmark on the Cork to Killarney road, midway between Ballyvourney and Ballymakeera. While there was no official reason for the reunion, many who attended Monday’s golf classic at Dook’s Golf Club and Tuesday night’s dinner at Scott’s Hotel would have entered the school between 1959 and 1969. Many of the students went on to become well-known public figures in
either political or sporting circles and included Kerry football legend Mickey ‘Ned’ O’Sullivan and current Mayor of Killarney, Cllr Michael Gleeson. “The school was established to ensure high standards of fluency in Irish, many would have gone on to be teachers and this ensured that the Irish was taught at a high-level in national schools,” Mayor Gleeson told the Killarney Advertiser. Gleeson, a keen supporter of the Irish language will put a motion before Kerry County Council on Monday next, asking if a Erasmus programme, similar to the one where Irish students study in Europe for a given period, could be introduced here. “As the Constitution of Ireland in Article 7 states that Irish is the national language and the official language it is imperative that the primary teachers of the country have excellent oral competence to teach the language effectively,” it states in his motion. “To confirm this I am asking the Government to establish a foundation based on the Erasmus Scholarship, to the Gaeltacht for a year, for the teaching subjects."

WEDDING OF THE WEEK

After surprising their families with their wedding news last Christmas – one couple sealed their love in Killarney recently.
Aidan Casey from Rathmore, and Tara Dolan from Fermoy, Co. Cork, secretly booked their venue – but waited until presents were handed to their family members before announcing the wedding date. And on September 7, the couple, Aidan, son of Sean Casey and the late Moira, and Tara, daughter of Kevin and Anne Dolan gathered with family and friends for a Civil Ceremony conducted by Celebrant Denis Hobson – the first outdoor ceremony to be held at the Killarney Oaks Hotel. The bridal party was made up of Maid of Honour Michelle Keenan, Bridesmaids Leanne O’Shea and Megan Fay. Best Man was Billy Moore and Groomsmen were Simon Casey and Declan Moore, whilst Flowergirl duties were carried out by the couple’s little two-year-old daughter Ellie. Following the joyous ceremony, local photographer Mícheál O'Sullivan took them to Muckross House for their official wedding photos. The day was captured on video by Marc Egan and everyone enjoyed a beautiful meal, and entertainment by the Celtic Knights and John Frawley the Singing Chef.
“Myself and Aidan met while he was bar tending in the Grand in Killarney,” Tara told the Killarney Advertiser this week. “I used to work in the hotel industry and we used to all go to the Grand after work. We were friends for a number of months and then decided to meet up for a drink. As they say the rest is history. In 2017, we welcomed our daughter Ellie.” The couple had been talking about marriage for a while and organised a wedding consultation at the Killarney Oaks. “This was in August, but we announced our news on Christmas Day by giving presents to the parents that had father of the bride/groom and mother of bride napkin.” And she added that the months just flew by after Christmas, as everything fell into place. “Our wedding day was the best day of our lives. We cannot thank our suppliers enough. The Killarney Oaks pulled out all the stops. They could not do enough for us. Everything went off so smoothly. Our photographer Mícheál was amazing, he made everything so easy for us. Thank you again to everyone that made our day so special. We will remember our day forever.”

Australia bound “for the sunshine” When Hayden Coffey decided he was leaving the Royal Hotel after four years and heading off to Australia, few could argue with him.

The Pinewood man’s inspiration was simple. “I am going for the sunshine,” he said. “I am leaving here in the winter and heading into their summer.” Colleagues from the Royal Hotel organ-
ised a surprise leaving for him at the Ross Hotel on Sun day night. He and his friend Veronica O’Shea, who worked in the Great Southern Killarney, departs Ireland on October 22. The two friends will travel to Melbourne via Doha in Qatar. Unfortunately, their layover is too short so they will have no time to enjoy the sights of the Gulf State. Once in Melbourne they both hope to secure work in the hotel or hospitality sectors.
Local couple celebrate 50 years wedded bliss
Over 130 guests helped Tim and Nuala Looney from Coolgrean Park celebrate their 50th Wedding Anniversary on Saturday. Their special day began with the renewing of their vows at St Mary's Cathedral, overseen by Fr Tom Looney, who earlier this year celebrated half a century in the priesthood. The couple's original bridal party, Nuala’s two sisters, Joan Sheridan and Phylis Hurley, her brother Peter and Tim’s brother Lewis John, were amongst the guests at the special celebration.
Later, the large group went for dinner at the Plaza Hotel. “It was a much bigger day out than the first one 50 years ago,” said their daughter-in-law, Margaret Looney. “All their nieces, nephews and grandchildren were there too.” The furthest who travelled was Tim’s sister Sheila who came home from Brisbane, Australia for the occasion.

Now is the time to get to work on your spring garden When you think of spring, what comes to mind? Apart from longer days, I think in terms of snowdrops, daffodils, bluebells, and best of all, tulips. If you, like me, think in terms of flowers, then now is the time to get to work! September is when the bulb planting season really start, but you can still plant them well into October. Indeed, the later you leave tulips, the less chance there is of them getting the disease ‘tulip fire’. Most bulbs prefer well-drained, fertile soil, and tulips prefer a little lime added in our acidic conditions. A few general rules when planting bulbs: the top of the bulb is almost always the pointy end! Plant them 2-3 times as deep as they are tall, and about two widths apart. Add some Grow More or chicken pellets in the bottom of the planting hole, then cover with some compost before putting the bulb in place. If using bulbs in an informal way of planting, or you want them to naturalise, the best way to decide where to plant is by throwing them and planting where they fall. Tulips in particular are not great at surviving in our soil, so if you have bulbs you want to keep, lift them when the foliage turns yellow and keep them in a dark well-ventilated place until the next autumn. Do be aware that tulips are not the best for flowering in the second year and should be kept for unimportant beds. Apart from daffodils, tulips and crocus, there are many more unusual varieties to try. Snakehead fritillaria for example, are deceptively delicate looking flowers,
yet are very hardy, and naturalise quite happily. Their larger cousin, Fritillaria aurora imperialis, or Imperial Crown is also hardy and very beautiful. It has a tall, 4ft, flowering stem, which holds a ring of bell shaped flowers topped by a tuft of leaves. It is one of the oldest bulbs cultivated. Alliums are also well worth planting. Beautiful spheres on slender stems come in whites, yellows and purples, ranging in size from a ping pong ball to a football! Anemone bland mix are also an easy to grow plant. They are lovely in a rockery or alpine setting, and if the soil is well drained, they will come up year after year. I use new bulbs almost every year, and as a consequence I have patches of them all over the garden… tell-tale signs of where I have emptied pots! Camassia is also a very easy to grow bulb, multiplying quickly. Flower spikes in white and blue grow up to a metre tall, and they are ideal for use as cut flowers. Hyacinths and paperwhite daffodils are popular as indoor plants for Christmas. If you want to have a display, you will need to start forcing them by the end of this week. Plant your bulbs in a bowl, not touching each other or the sides of the bowl. Firm compost around them, leaving the neck showing. Put them into a dark cool place and monitor them to ensure they do not dry out. When the shoots are about 4 inches long bring them out into the light. Do not place in strong sunlight or near a radiator! When the flower buds are well established you may put them where they are to be enjoyed! They also make great gifts!

‘LIFE UNDERCOVER: Coming of Age in the CIA’ By Amaryllis Fox RELEASED: OCTOBER 15 ‘Life Undercover: Coming of Age in the CIA’, follows Amaryllis Fox’s life from childhood, mentioning the events that helped lead her to joining the CIA, from when her friend was killed in a terrorist attack, to her last year in Oxford, where she was studying theology and international law, and one of her professors was captured and beheaded. Fox joined the CIA after her graduate degree and created an algorithm that predicted the likelihood of a terrorist cell arising in any village. The novel explains many different events from her work within the CIA, from living in a simulated world for six months learning how to escape from capture, and withstanding torture, to being an undercover art dealer in remote areas of the Middle East and Asia, and even to negotiating with terrorist leaders
with her daughter in the room. Fox retired from the CIA in 2010, and has been working on this novel to give an insight into what working for the CIA is really like.

A WEEKLY ROUND-UP OF NEWS • VIEWS FROM KERRY AND AROUND THE WORLD
INSPIRED BY DANNY CASEY
Brexit is not just about Ireland With all the talk about Brexit and how the current situation of on and off talks and deals might effect the future of both the European Union and the United Kingdom, events taking place in another EU country will have a far greater effect on both.
Spain, and more specifically Catalonia and the British Overseas Territory of Gibraltar, have been seriously overlooked. While the DUP continue to hold the Brexit talks to ransom, talks of a Border Poll for a United Ireland are mentioned in hushed tones in governmental corri-
dors. The Scottish Independence question has not gone away either. While all this is going on, there is no word about Gibraltar. Citizens there voted to remain in the EU in the famous June 2016 referendum. However, they are subject of hard-border system, Spanish workers migrate daily to work
in the tourism industry there. Over 1,200kms to the North East there is further unrest in Catalonia. The Catalans have long-claimed independence from Spain. This time two years ago there were scenes of civil unrest as pro-independence supporters clashed with police and government officials as the subject of independence raised its head again. Things remained quiet on the Catalan front until this week when several of those involved faced court charges which sparked further rioting. Should the Catalans get their way, and they have no intention of backing down, it could have wider repercussions for the entire EU. Scottish ministers have already stated that should Scotland gain independence, they would automatically be accepted into the EU as it was part of the UK when that country was part of the common-bloc. That, in itself would spell the end of the United Kingdom and pave the way for either a United Ireland or an independent state of Northern Ireland. Could we be looking at new countries like Gibraltar and Catalonia going the same road? The Basque region of Spain was always more vocal than the Catalans, so would they stick their head above the parapet again? We have not even started on the territory of Northern Macedonia, currently part of Greece, but natives consider themselves neither Greek nor Macedonian and are too crying for independence. The next few weeks and months are going to be very interesting times for the geography of Europe as we know it.
Hey Kids: be nice please Trump CORNER Ireland needs to be nicer to President Donald Trump according one of his closest allies.
Brian Burns, Trump’s first choice for US Ambassador to Ireland before declining for health reasons, is an Irish American businessman and philanthropist. Burns says that Trump is misunderstood by many in Ireland and that he has an affection for the country that is as great as that of Clinton or Kennedy or Reagan. He says he doesn’t deserve the animosity with which he’s treated.
Burns has hit out against the Irish media’s constant criticism of the US President. He was speaking to Caitríona Perry, an Irish journalist who covered Trump’s presidential campaign and who has written a book called: ‘The Tribe: The Inside Story of Irish Power and Influence in US Politics’, “He hasn’t done anything to Ireland! Ireland’s great,” he says in the book. “He loves Ireland. He looks, as do I, at the terrible articles that are written about him in the Irish papers. Your press is even tougher than the United States. And sometimes I wonder why
don’t they give this new president a chance and let him go to work? Current Irish Ambassador to the US, Dan Mulhall, also featured in the book. “He always says the right things about Ireland. He’s positive about the immigration issue. He wants to be helpful on that. He understands the importance of the peace process. While he may be partial to Brexit, for other reasons, he, I think, is careful not to want to do anything or say anything that would compromise peace in Ireland,” said the Ambassador.

Cross Border Directive will continue - TD confirmes Michael Healy Rae is delighted that the HSE have confirmed to him that despite Brexit, the Cross Border Directive will continue so this means that trips to Belfast for procedures such as cataract removal, hip or knee replacements will continue. “I was very anxious that the trips would continue despite Brexit otherwise the next step would be to travel to France or Germany, and obviously due to the nature of some of the procedures that are being carried out it involves a lot of elderly people and this may not be possible to travel this far,” Deputy HealyRae said.
The variety of procedures that are available, vary from tonsil removal, orthopaedics, pain management, cataract removal and many more, he added. “It is important that people understand that they do not need a medical card or health insurance to use this scheme and a full refund will be issued to them after the procedure has been carried out. I raised the issue in the Dáil several times and I’m glad that the HSE has confirmed that whether there is a deal or no deal these trips will continue for the foreseeable future.” Deputy Michael Healy Rae went on to say that he is now planning trips to continue into December and into 2020.

He joins a list of winners that includes the likes of Christy Kissane, Dan Tim O'Sullivan, Shelagh O'Connor and Patsy Byrne, as well as being honoured for his contribution to Kerry life at home and abroad over the last year. “This is my fourth time going but first as Mayor of Kerry,” Cllr Kelleher told the Killarney Advertiser. “I looking forward to seeing all the hard work Kerry people do in London. I admire their vast network and admire how they all help each other out. It is a Kerry community in London.”
New youth initiative launched in Kerry A new Youth Employability Initiative targeting 16 – 18-year-olds, who are not in employment, education or training, has been launched in Kerry. The Youth Employability Initiative (YEI) was established in order to improve the employability skills of young people who are at risk of being furthest from the labour market. Within the KDYS, this initiative has been split into three projects, which are located in Killarney, Tralee and Listowel, funded by the Department of Children and Youth Affairs (DCYA) and administered through Kerry ETB. The purpose of this programme is to work with young people, in order to assist them in ascertaining and developing an array of skills which will both increase and improve their level of opportunity
for future employment. This piece of work will be carried out on both a oneto-one basis with the young person and also in a group setting, where appropriate, and will be tailored to the needs of each individual participant. The criteria for this programme are as follows: the young person must be between the ages of 16 and 18-years-old, live within the relevant catchment area i.e. Killarney, Tralee or Listowel, and must not currently be in education, training or employment. Our purpose is to ‘engage the disconnected’. The contact details of each YEI mentor are as follows: Louise Kiely (Killarney) Tel: 085 8720362 or email: louisekiely@kdys.ie, Breda Dowling (Tralee) Tel: 087 7380559 or email: bredadowling@ kdys.ie, Michelle Rowan (Listowel) Tel: 085 7875120 or email: michellerowan@kdys.ie.

Plans for Kilcummin ‘Spooky Sprint’ fun run | By Sean Moriarty Kilcummin National School will celebrate Halloween with the third running of its ‘Spooky Sprint’ funrun on October 27. The event is organised in association with Kilcummin National School Parents Association for the school itself, and will also help raise funds for the Fuchsia Ward at St Columbanus Community Hospital that cares for people with dementia. “The fundraising part of the day is really important, and it is great the event will be supporting two organisations this year - the local school but also the Fuchsia Ward in St Columbanus Ward,” School Parents Association Chairperson, Derek O’Leary said. “We also want to make sure that it’s a great family event where everyone can really enjoy all aspects of the Halloween season, so we’re encouraging everyone, children and adults to come out in costume and make the most of the day.”
The party continues in the Kilcummin Recreational Hall after the walk where traditional Halloween games will be played alongside a competition for the best costume. “We had such a great day last year and everyone enjoyed the fun run/walk and also the after party. This year we have also introduced The Best Carved Pumpkin Competition where we hope all the boys and girls will come on the day with their pumpkins carved creatively,” added organiser Anne Marie O’Leary. To date the event has raised €3,500 and it’s hoped that this year’s event will be just as successful as previous years. “We are so delighted to be chosen as a beneficiary of this exciting event. We will be putting the funds raised to good use and the money will be applied to enhance our facility in the Fuchsia Ward,” Maura Flynn, Director of Killarney Community Hospital, said. Registration for the fun run will commence at 11.30am in Kilcummin Recreational Hall which is located just across the road from Kilcummin Church.

Benefits of strength and conditioning for runners One common step to help you reach your fitness goal is Strength and Conditioning (S&C). Whether you’re new to running or looking to get in shape, are hoping to complete your first 5km run, have signed up for a half or full marathon or want to set a new personal best or improve sports performance - all the above goals are quite different to each other. Whether you’re an elite runner or someone who enjoys their local 5km parkrun, you should be incorporating strength training into your plans.
THE SCIENCE BEHIND IT
Due to the power of social media nowadays we come across a number of videos and snippets of elite runners/athletes in the gym working just as hard indoors as they are outdoors. What these elite runners practice is backed up by science; by carrying out S&C training these runners will see an increase in performance. Weight training and plyometric training in particular improve running economy, i.e how efficiently your body uses oxygen at a given pace.
SO IF ELITE RUNNERS ARE S EEING THE BENEFITS THEN WHY CAN’T YOU?
S&C training should be considered as an essential part of your plans just the same as heading out for a run. The common misconception by a number of people is that gym work only needs to be completed when you are injured or suffering from a problem. The structure and strength of your body matters just as much as your aerobic capacity so therefore S&C work is vital.
WILL IT MAKE ME BULKY?
Another common fear you hear quite a lot from runners is that lifting weights will make them bulky or heavy, and therefore slow. Two or three strength training sessions per week will not make you any of the above, in fact, it will transfer over to make you a stronger, faster, more efficient runner.
WHAT EXERCISES SHOULD I DO?
A S&C program focused on power and speed will include exercises using a variety of equipment such as a kettlebell, medicine ball, barbell, or even your own bodyweight. Another important part of the program will be explosive jumping movements which are also known as plyometrics - plyometric exercises include single leg hops, jumping lunges, jumping squats, box jumps, and any other type of jump/hop.
ASSESS YOUR GOALS
Before you start, assess your goals. Are you training for a marathon that will require lots of mileage and time on your feet? Or are you trying to stay fit during the off-season and occasionally race a local 5K for fun? Start to structure your training accordingly. It is important to take note of what your “hard” training days are going to be and try to implement a recovery day or a light session the following day. The off-season or early weeks of training are an ideal time to introduce a new strength training routine.
OPEN NIGHT: Dawn Carmody and Ms Edwina Duggan (Spanish Teacher) pictured at the Killarney Community College open night on Monday night last.
Successful open night at one Killarney school
There were magnificent crowds of parents and students through the doors of Killarney Community College on Monday night. Doors open at 6.30pm and a beautiful smell of freshly baked cupcakes wafted through the assembly area from the Home Economics room as everyone experienced all the various subject areas and modern facilities during their annual open night. Science rooms experimented with light and students also got to witness and take part in the dissection of hearts, kidneys and livers. The practical rooms displayed beautiful creations made by the students and the grand piano echoed sweet music from the general purpose area throughout the evening. “Our music students showcased their talents while rehearsing for the upcoming pantomime ‘Beauty and the Beast’,” Principal, Stella Loughnane, said. “The PE Department showcased the method of assessment that is now used in the Short Course in Junior Cycle. Students demonstrated their gymnastic abilities while Ms. Maher explained to the parents how this assessment is recorded and graded using the college’s new ICT devices. Resource area three was a hive of activity with students demonstrations of the Vex Robotics designed and coded by our students. All subjects were on display with teachers talking to parents and students about different aspects of their particular subject.”
Principal Stella Loughnane in her address explained how Killarney Community College is a very progressive school, highlighting the curricular development in Computer Coding in the new Junior Cycle, and the college’s involvement as a consultation school for the new Senior Cycle among other areas. Mrs. Loughnane went on to explain how the school provides excellent learning opportunities and extra-curricular activities alike. She explained to parents the high level of results achieved by recent Leaving Certificate and Junior Cycle students. Killarney Community College fully embraces new technologies and has recently implemented the innovative computer system Microsoft 365 which is helping the students be prepared for the future world of learning and work. Currently students are communicating on a daily basis with their teachers through Microsoft 365. Parents on the night commented on the ease of movement around the school and the very obvious rapport between teachers and students including the warmth and caring environment that is a hallmark of Killarney Community College. “Overall Monday night was a wonderful success due to the hard work and dedication of the management and staff of the college.”

ELECTRIC EXPERIMENT: 15 drivers from the Dingle area will be offered the use of an electric car for a year as the ESB evaluates the use of such vehicles in rural areas.
Drivers offered free electric car Up to 15 drivers from the Dingle Peninsula will be offered the free use of an electric car for a year as part of trial programme on sustainable energy in the area. Promoted by ESB Networks, the trial includes other new technologies like solar power, battery management systems and electric vehicle chargers in an effort to gain knowledge of living with such technologies in rural areas. The car scheme was launched at the recent Dingle Food Festival. ESB officials said they had over 270 applications for the 15 cars that will be made available to locals for a period of 12 months, beginning next year.
“At this moment in time we are in the very early stages of the project,” Claire McElligott, Dingle Project Engagement Manager, told the Killarney Advertiser. “We took advantage of the footfall at the Dingle Food Festival to get sign-ups for an expression of interest. We are meeting suppliers early November.” Late last year ESB selected five local ambassadors to participate in the project and since December have enjoyed new technologies in their homes and business. They will be the first to sample the cars as part of the full project. 10 more cars will be made available to drivers for the purposes of evaluating Electric Vehicles in a rural area.

Earlier this year, as part of a Diocese of Kerry shakeup, Fr Eamonn Mulvihill was transferred to Castlegregory. The move left the Kilcummin parish without a resident priest, instead Killarney priests were asked to cover parish duties at Our Lady of Lourdes Church in the village. It marked the end of a two-year stint for Fr Mulvihill and a huge crowd of locals gathered in the parish hall to say goodbye and thanks. YOUR WEEKEND STARTS HERE
IT Tralee plan information evening and open day In anticipation of CAO applications opening in November, IT Tralee will host its annual information evening and open day. The Parent’s Information Evening and Open Day takes place on October 24 and 25 to assist students and their families as they consider college options for September 2020. On Thursday, October 24 at 7pm, IT Tralee will be joined by Psychotherapist, Media Contributor and Bestselling author, Stella O’Malley who will host a session on the best way to support children through the Leaving Certificate and prepare for the transition to third level
education. Also on the evening, IT Tralee Admissions experts will be available to give practical advice on making a CAO application and accessing student support services. “This annual information evening has become a staple event at IT Tralee in response to the growing number of queries from parents and family members regarding the move from second to third level, and the opportunities and challenges this presents for the students concerned,” Bríd McElligott, Vice President Research, Development and External Engagement at the Institute said. “We are delighted to have Stella O’Malley
join us on the evening given her vast experience in this area.” The following day, on Friday October 25, the Institute will welcome potential students and their families to its annual Open Day. This ever-popular event will be held from 9.30am to 1.30pm at IT Tralee’s North Campus and will attract over 1,000 potential students from across the county and beyond. Open Day is structured to help potential students to get the most from their visit to IT Tralee with a full schedule of talks, tours and events. “Open Day is one of the most important days in the Institute’s calendar of events.
It provides potential students with the opportunity to visit the Institute, as well as giving students and their families a chance to meet with lecturers, current students and support staff. Current IT Tralee students will lead this year’s campus tours, which will include a guided walkthrough the newly opened Kerry Sports Academy.” In addition to having an opportunity to speak with academic staff and students from all programme areas, representatives from Student Services and Admissions will also be on hand to provide information to students regarding the CAO application process, the costs of going to college, accommodation and adapting to student life. Tailored workshops will also be delivered for mature students and students with learning difference. Both events are free of charge and open to the public. Booking is requested for the Parent’s Information Evening. Please call 066 7191704 or email mary.reid@ staff.ittralee.ie.
ROAD SAFETY: Children from Maggie's Montessori Preschool took part in 'Beep Beep Day' in line with the national road safety week. The children were delighted to receive a visit from the local Gardai Brendan, Fiona and Seán.

O’DONOGHUE
No words we write can ever say, How much we miss you every day, No one knows the grief we bear, When the family gather and you’re not there. We laugh, we talk, we play the part, But beyond the sorrow is a broken heart, The sorrow we feel, we can never explain, And the ache in our hearts will always remain.
Time may pass and fade away, But silent thoughts and memories stay, No longer in our lives to share, But in our hearts ye are always there.
Forever loved and sadly missed by your sister Regina, James, Gianna, Jodie, T.J. and Lucy xxx
If tears could build a stairway, And memories build a lane, We would walk right up to heaven, And bring you home again.

Fondest memories, every day, of the dearest mother Cathy Guerin, wife of the late Cornelius Guerin, late of “Irish Cottage”, Muckross Road, Killarney, who sadly left us on 21/10/2005. For Mam “Surprised By Joy” Surprised by joy-impatient as the Wind I turned to share the transportOh,with whom But thee, deep buried in the silent Tomb, That spot which no vicissitude can find? Love, faithful love, Recalled thee to my mindBut how can I forget thee?Through what power, Even for the least division of an hour, Have I been so beguiled as to be blind To my most grievous loss! That thoughts return Was the worst pang that sorrow ever bore, Save One, One only, when I stood forlorn, Knowing my hearts best treasure was no more, That neither present time, nor years unborn, Could to my sight that heavenly face restore William Wordsworth(1770-1850) Always thinking of you Mam. Also remembering, most especially, their beloved son Cornelius, who very sadly, and too young, left us on 22/9/14. From your children Mary, Patrick, Margaret, Timothy, Katherine, Denis and their families.

In loving memory of the best Mom ever, Bridie O’Grady, late of Park Road Whose 1st Anniversary occurs on the 16th October.
You Never Said Goodbye
Life goes on, we know that’s true, But it’s not the same since we lost you, We keep your memories one by one, The things you said, the things you did, They bring a smile and many a tear, And always a wish that you were here. In God’s care you rest above, And in our hearts you rest with love.
Mom, the next time that I meet you, Will be at heaven’ door, You’ll be there to meet me, And I will cry no more.
O’GRADY

Thanks to Fr Kieran for his wonderful Mass, to Gobnait Mahony for her help in organising the readings, our singers Denis Crowley and Helen Kerins, and Tony O’Brien for his singing at the burial. We would like to extend special thanks to Anne-Marie Jones, the carers, health nurses and the Palliative Care home care team who were outstanding in their care of Bridie. Also Anthony and staff of O’Sullivan’s Chemist, Killarney. It would be impossible to thank everyone individually. Please accept this Acknowledgement as a token of our gratitude and appreciation. Mass has been offered for your intentions.
You never said I’m leaving, You never said goodbye, You were gone before we knew it, And only God knows why. A million times we needed you, A million times we cried, If love alone could have saved you, You never would have died. In loving memory of Bridie O’Grady, late of Park Road, Killarney, Who passed away on 16th October 2018 A golden heart stopped beating, Hard working hands at rest, It broke our hearts to see you go, God only takes the best.
Your life was love and labour, Your love for your family true, You did your best for all of us, We will always remember you.
I really don’t know, Where to start, The day you left, You broke my heart.
We sat beside your bedside, Our hearts were crushed and sore, We did our duty to the end, Till we could do no more.
Not just a crack, It broke in two, Filled with love, Just for you.
In tears we saw you sinking, We watched you fade away, And though our hearts were breaking, We knew you could not stay.
That love’s not gone, It’s kept safe inside, But when you left, Part of me died.
Our lips cannot speak how we loved you, Our hearts cannot tell what to say, But God only knows how we miss you, In our home that is lonely today.
I want to remember The bond we shared, But the pain in my heart, Is so hard to bear.
Love you always 4 ever, Patsy & Dan¸

A golden heart stopped beating, Hard working hands at rest, It broke our hearts to see yo go, God only takes the best.
Time slips by and Life goes on, But from our hearts you’re never gone, We think about you always, We talk about you too, We have so many memories.
Our Nana’s hands could heal our hurt, Or cool our fevered brow, Her care was not a learned degree, Experience taught her how. If God had made Nana flowers, And had us pick and choose, Then you would be a perfect rose, And we would have picked and chosen you. We would have picked you out, From all the rest, Because you’re the Nana, That’s simply the best.
Precious people are very few, That is why there was only one of you, Lord, treasure her in your garden of rest, Because on earth she was one of the best. Lovingly remembered your son James, Catriena, Kate and Evie xxx

EFFICACIOUS NOVENA TO THE SACRED HEART OF JESUS I.O my Jesus, you have said, “Truly I say to you, ask and you shall receive, seek and you shall find, knock and it shall be opened to you,” Behold I knock, I seek and I ask for the grace of… Our Father, Hail Mary, Glory Be to the Father, Sacred Heart of Jesus, I put all my trust in Thee. II.O my Jesus, You said, “Truly I say to you, whatsoever you shall ask the Father in My name, He will give it to you.” Behold, in your name, I ask the Father for the grace of… Our Father, Hail Mary, Glory Be to the Father, Sacred Heart of Jesus, I put all my trust in Thee. III.—O my Jesus, You said, “Truly I say to you, Heaven and Earth shall pass away but My words shall not pass away.” Behold, I, encouraged by your infallible words, now ask for the grace of… Our Father, Hail Mary, Glory Be to the Father, Sacred Heart of Jesus, I put all my trust in Thee. O Sacred Heart of Jesus, to whom one thing alone is impossible, namely, not to have compassion on the afflicted, have pity on us miserable sinners and grant us the grace which we ask of Thee through the Sorrowful and Immaculate Heart of Mary, your and our tender Mother. Say the Hail, Holy Queen and add: St. Joseph, foster father of Jesus, pray for us. MAYSE
In loving memory of Christian Mayse Late of Maple Drive, Killarney, who passed away 20th October 2017 & whose 21st birthday occurred on the 16th October.
In loving memory of Christian Mayse Late of Maple Drive, Killarney Who passed away 20th October 2017 The sun still rises in the east, And darkness falls at night, But nothing now seems quite the same, Each day is not as bright.
They tell me life’s a journey, That will take me many years, Some days are filled with laughter, And some days are filled with tears.
The birds still sing, The flowers grow, And the breeze still whispers too, But it will never ever be the same, In this world without you.
Some days we think our hearts will break, That we can’t persevere Some days we have to don a mask, And hide beneath its veneer.
It’s so sad that you had to go, Your leaving caused such pain, But you were so very special, And earth’s loss is heaven’s gain.
Some days we turn and look for you, With thoughts we’d like to share, Some days we can’t understand, The reason you’re not here.
Always in our thoughts, Nana Eileen, Uncle Michael, aunts Patricia, Elaine, Tracey and Maeve, and cousins Noah, Lucy, Emily and Jamie.
Some days the sadness leaves us, And our smiles will reappear, Some days we lose our eyes because Your memory is so clear.
NOVENA TO THE HOLY SPIRIT
Some days we struggle to go on, Just wishing you were near, Most days we spend in gratitude, That you were ever here.
O Holy Spirit, you who solve all problems, light all roads so that I can attain my goal. You gave me the divine gift to forgive and forget all evil against me and that in all instances of my life you are with me. I want in this short prayer to thank you for all things you have given me as you confirm once again that I never wanted to be separated from you in spite of all material illusions. I wish to be with you in Eternal Glory. Thank you for mercy towards me and mine. This prayer must be said for three days, after three days the favour will be granted. B.O.C.
You are the hardest goodbye. Love and miss you each and every day Mom, Niall, Charlie & Clodagh. Anniversary Mass on Saturday 19th October at 6.15pm in St.Mary’s Cathedral.

East Kerry and Dingle face off in County Championship grudge match KERRY SFC
QUARTER-FINAL
___________________________________________________________________
Dingle v East Kerry Saturday at 7pm Austin Stack Park STORY SO FAR There’s certainly no love lost between these two. Dingle and East Kerry met three times in last year’s championship and although they split the series evenly, Dingle had the last laugh when they hammered
their divisional counterparts in an ill-tempered semi-final replay. Clifford brothers Paudie and David both received their marching orders that day, which will be remembered for the ugly incident which saw a Dingle selector striking Dara Moynihan in the face. Neither the selector nor Moynihan (injured) will be on the field this time out, though sparks are likely to fly regardless. Last year’s beaten finalists are tipped by many to run the Crokes close again in 2019 and they have already defeat-
ed two other supposed contenders, Austin Stacks and Kerins O’Rahilly’s, in the opening rounds. East Kerry, meanwhile, have been buoyed by the return of star forward David Clifford, who kicked eight points in their Round 3 extra-time victory over Strand Road.

South Kerry v St Kieran’s Sunday at 2pm Fitzgerald Stadium STORY SO FAR It has been smooth
sailing thus far for the 2015 champions. The men from the south defeated Shannon Rangers and St Brendan’s in Rounds 1 and 2A of this year’s competition and they are firm favourites to make it three wins from three and advance to the last four. They are back-boned by their chief scorer Bryan Sheehan and fellow county men Killian Young and Mark Griffin. Kieran’s, however, have been threatening to cause a major upset for a number of years now. They had a very useful game against Kilcummin on Sunday last which they won 0-21 to 1-13. Any team that can kick 21 points
can hold their heads up high. In the first round game they had a narrow 0-12 to 0-9 victory over Mid Kerry. (Words: Eamonn Fitzgerald.)

Legion v St Brendan’s Saturday at 5.15pm Austin Stack Park STORY SO FAR Legion got the better of near neighbours Kilcummin in Round 1 before powering to an impressive victory over a talented West Kerry outfit in Round 2. That 2-15 to 2-9 win back in Annascaul has given supporters cause for optimism but Stephen Stack’s men will face an even sterner test in Tralee tomorrow evening. Brendan’s, whose first 15 is made up of players from each of their five clubs (Na Gaeil, St Pat’s, Churchill, Ardfert and John Mitchels), defeated an understrength East Kerry team in the first round but they came unstuck the
following week against South Kerry. Séamus Murphy’s team bounced back against Shannon Rangers in Round 3 with James Duggan (2-3) to the fore in an easy win.
TOP SCORERS Legion: Conor Keane (1-11). St Brendan’s: Diarmuid O’Connor (2-5), James Duggan (2-5). POSSIBLE XVs Legion: B Kelly; D O’Doherty, D Sheahan, C Gammell; P O’Connor, D Sheahan, J Lyne; P Lucey, S Keane; J O’Neill, J O’Sullivan, B Maguire; J O’Donoghue, C Keane, T Moriarty. QUARTER-FINAL
___________________________________________________________________
Dr Crokes v Kenmare Sunday at 3.30pm Fitzgerald Stadium STORY SO FAR The reigning champions have a newish look about them in this year’s championship but it has been a case of business as usual for the four-in-a-row-chasing Crokes. New manager Edmund O’Sullivan, who took over from Pat O’Shea after the All-Ireland Club final defeat in March, has converted experienced forward Brian Looney into a wing back while the introduction of youngster Mark O’Shea at midfield has worked well so far. With a couple of new faces in the backs and Tony Brosnan firing an all cylinders following his summer in the States, the Crokes have made light work of Rathmore and St Kieran’s en route to the quarters. Kenmare were unlucky not to get
the better of Kerins O’Rahilly’s on the opening day but they kept their head above water in this year’s tournament by beating Rathmore in the losers’ round. It looked like their year was over when they trailed by 2-4 to no score against West Kerry a fortnight ago but they showed great fighting spirit to turn it around and eventually prevail with three points to spare.

McGinn sparkles as Lakers blitz Tolka NATIONAL LEAGUE: DIVISION 1 __________________________________________________________________________________

KILLARNEY SPORTS CENTRE New signing Mike McGinn caught the eye on Saturday night as the Scotts Lakers comfortably defeated Tolka Rovers in Killarney.
he also grabbed 14 boards and provided four assists for his teammates. Local lad Jamie O’Sullivan got 10 minutes off the bench and acquitted himself well and the biggest cheer of the night came when fellow newcomer Jack Corridan converted a free throw to register his first ever point as a Laker. The home bench rose to their feet in unison to celebrate their young teammate’s first basket. McCarthy and his backroom team will be hoping that it’s the first of many. Corridan also showed that he was up for the physical side of the game at this level as he more than held his own throughout a physical duel with his opposite number. With this victory the Lakers improve to a 3-2 record which sees them move up to fourth place in Division 1, level with LYIT Donegal and one win behind joint leaders Fr Mathews and Ballincollig. Next up is an away match against the Portlaoise Panthers on Saturday and they will be back in Killarney the following week as they play host to old rivals Ballincollig in the first round of the National Cup.
McGinn, a former Neptune stalwart who was a second team All-Star with Fr Mathew’s last season, came off the bench for his home debut and the skilful point guard sparkled as the Lakers ran out comprehensive 19-point winners. In truth, it was all very straightforward for the hosts on the night and the result was never really in doubt. Shane McCarthy’s side led by 14 at the end of the first, 13 at the half and when Jackson dropped in a gorgeous step-back three just before the buzzer at the end of the third, the Lakers led by 28 (78-50). To their credit, Tolka, who came into this game hoping to snap a three-game losing streak, never gave up and they managed to cut the deficit to 19 by the close of play. Tougher tests lie ahead for St Paul’s but generally speaking they can be pleased with their efforts in this game, which was tetchy at times despite its one-sided nature. Aaron Jackson chipped in with 28 points, including three three-pointers and another rim-rocking dunk, in what was a commanding performance in front of his home supporters. The American has settled in well, averaging 25.4 points in his first five games. Danish big man Toby Christensen, cheered on by his parents who were in attendance on the night, made all nine of his attempts from inside the arc and

Celtic and Athletic in FAI Junior Cup action It’s an important weekend for Killarney Celtic and Killarney Athletic as both teams look to advance to Round 4 of the biggest junior soccer competition in the country: the FAI Junior Cup. Celtic, who reached the last four of the national tournament in 2017, have a home tie on Saturday against Coole of Clare and given their current form they will be firm favourites to prevail. Brian Spillane’s side made light work of Shannonside in the last round and one suspects that they will be full of confidence heading into this weekend’s Round 3 clash. Coole are currently second in the Clare Second Division (third tier) so they are likely to have their work cut out against the Kerry champions, though they will take heart from their 3-1 victory over Premier Division club Sporting Ennisty-

The Blues had a fine result in Round 2 when they defeated Abbeyfeale United on penalties and they will be hoping to keep the show on the road with another win on the national stage. Their opponents are bottom of the Clare First Division so The Blues will fancy their chances, but Ennis will be hoping that home advantage is a significant factor. Elsewhere in the FAI Junior Cup, Park play Shannon Olympic, Fenit take on Lifford in Mounthawk Park and Windmill play Shannon Hibs in Clare. Closer to home, QPR have a tricky away tie against Rattoo Rovers in the Premier B Division and the MEK Galaxy Bs are at home to Clanmaurice in Division 2B.

The Killarney senior team had got their campaign up and running against a spirited Dunmanway side as they ran out 26-18 winners in Aghadoe. The home pack were dominant throughout and tries by hooker Ger Moynihan (two) and No. 8 David Howard gave the hosts an impressive 19-11 lead at the break. Killarney turned down a few kickable penalty opportunities in the second half as they went in search of the fourtry bonus point, which they managed to achieve through the platform of the scrum. Scrum-half Josh Fawcett showed the Dunmanway defence a clean pair of heels, touching down under the posts to give kicker Paudie Sheehan the simplest of opportunities to add the extra two points. Dunmanway had the final say scoring a consolation try in the dying minutes.

U18S DEFEATED
In their latest Munster Club U18 Conference 2 fixture, Killarney were defeated 19-12 by Listowel-Tralee in Aghadoe. This high-octane thriller was played in
splendid conditions on the superb new pitch and it enthralled down to the very last play. The fully-loaded and physically bigger visiting pack started with intent and following a sustained period of controlled recycling, they crossed in the right corner. Killarney struggled to gain any early momentum and compounded matters by conceding another seven points with 12 minutes on the clock. 12 points in arrears and mostly on the back foot, a tough day loomed. However, Craig McKenzie-Vass, Mark Sheahan, and Dion O’Neill each came close to scoring in a 10-minute period of pressure and eventually Killarney moved the ball wide for Ronan Buckley to cross the try line. Ciarán O’Brien converted and the half-time score was 12-7 for the visitors. Both teams probed for the telling score early in the second and it came following a moment of vision by the Listowel-Tralee out-half who cleverly crosskicked for his winger to touch down. With 10 minutes to go Craig McKenzie-Vass broke the cover before releasing James Kennelly who streaked away to score. Killarney went in search of a possible draw and Donnchadh Grealy came agonizingly close in the left corner. Tralee defended resolutely down the stretch and held out for the victory.

CYCLING
Rás Tailteann set for a comeback? The Rás Tailteann, Ireland’s biggest and most-significant bike race, could make a return to the calendar next season. The race failed to get off the ground this year after organisers were unable to secure a headline sponsor for the event. It was the first time since its inception in 1953 that the race did not take place. The Rás Tailteann was first held as a twoday event. It expanded to a nine-day event and, more recently, has been run over eight days. It has been won by some of the greats of Irish cycling, including Stephen Roche and four-time champion
Sé O’Hanlon, as well as overseas competitors who then went on to be top professional riders such as multiple World Time Trial champion Tony Martin. The event is rated a 2.2 race on the UCI (world governing body) international calendar, earning world-ranked points for those who excel on individual stages and in the overall classification. It has been part of that calendar since the 2000 edition and while this has added greatly to the prestige of the event, the extra requirements under UCI rules have greatly ramped up the budget. The race finances were covered in recent years by An Post, but it stepped back
from its backing of the race and cycling in general in 2017. The Rás Tailteann took place as usual last year thanks to a reserve fund, but the depletion of that made it vital that new backing was secured for 2019. Hopes have increased the race will make a comeback next year after the organisers secured a date on the 2020 UCI calendar although it remains unclear if a sponsor has been secured or not. The last time the race ran, in 2018, it passed through Killarney. The fourth stage started in Listowel and featured categorised climbs over Moll’s Gap and the Healy Pass on the way to the stage finish in Glengariff. On that occasion Killarney Cycling Club entered a five-man team in the race with well-known local riders like Marcus Treacy, Richard Maes, Conor Kissane, John Brosnan and Patrick Clifford making up the squad.
