The Irish Tourism Industry Confederation (ITIC) has launched a five point plan that it wants the Government to follow to save up to 3,500 jobs which are at potential risk locally in the tourism and allied sectors unless action is taken. | By Sean Moriarty The Killarney Chamber of Tourism and Commerce and the Kerry branch of the Irish Hotel Federation (IHF) have this week backed the plan. Businesses in the sector are concerned that COVID-19 has had shattering financial consequences on Ireland’s tourism and hospitality industry. The jobs concerns come one week after publicans marched to the Dáil for the same reasons. They said at the time that up 15,000 jobs were at risk in Kerry - but the Killarney Chamber of Tourism has narrowed that down to 3,500 jobs in the Killarney district. They say that last year, over one million people visited Killarney and that figure will be reduced by 600,000 this year

- mainly due to the lack of international visitors. “We are thankful we had a reasonably busy summer,” President Paul Sherry told the Killarney Advertiser. “But even if we get all of the staycation market we would still fall short. And this is not all about Killarney, it is a national problem and recognising there is pain in the industry and that something needs to be done.

Everyone in this town depends one way or another on tourism.” The closure of tourism and hospitality businesses for long periods, the reduction in capacity due to social distancing rules, and the effective restriction to the country of international tourists has caused massive damage to Ireland’s largest indigenous industry and biggest regional employer.

The Department of Business, Enterprise and Innovation has projected that tourism revenue will fall nationally by €5 billion this year and there will be up to 200,000 industry job losses. Both Killarney Chamber and the Kerry branch of the IFH are members of the ITIC, and Niamh O’Shea, manager of the Killarney Park Hotel, is one of the local representatives at Council level. “If you take these figures and break it down locally, there is without doubt, jobs and businesses at risk,” she told the Killarney Advertiser. “Kerry and Killarney is disproportionally reliant on tourism, we have no Foreign Direct Investment.” The Kerry branch of the IHF say that 11,000 jobs are now at risk in the county and that the Kerry economy is facing a €440m loss this year. Killarney has a higher proportion of tourism employees than any other town in the county. “A severely devastated tourism sector would be a major loss to the economy and society here in Kerry for many years to come," said local hotelier Bernadette Randles, who is the Chair of the Kerry branch of the IHF. “This can and must be avoided. We are doing everything we can to protect public health whilst also helping to restore the economy and safeguard people’s livelihoods, but we face extraordinary challenges.” The ITIC believe that Ireland’s world-class tourism and hospitality industry can be secured if the Government take five key steps. These include the introduction of rapid COVID-19 testing to replace quarantine rules, the reduction of the VAT rate to nine percent until April 2021, the review of the wage subsidy scheme, the introduction of business continuity grants, and the doubling of international marketing budgets.

Still no Lyme Disease signs over one year on | By Sean Moriarty

EXCLUSIVE

Inspirational students interviewed for RTÉ They're only back to school a matter of weeks - but five students will soon be featuring on RTÉ - after their inspirational project was nominated for a National Garda Youth Achievement Award. | By Michelle Crean One of the country's fastest rising TV presenters, Bláthnaid Treacy, who currently hosts the National Lottery and RTÉ 2FM's popular chart show, was in town on Monday to film the group at Killarney Community College about their 'Be Dementia Aware' project for a segment on the 'Today' show with Maura and Dáithí. Luckily the weather played ball as Bláthnaid, who was accompanied by cameraman Conor Lenehan, interviewed the Young Social Innovators (YSI) and their teacher Lorraine Crowley outdoors. The group, comprising of Aoife O'Brien, Caoimhe Fleming, Julia Olabode, Ben Cussen and Darja Puzanova, won the National Young Social Innovators Social Media Award in 2018 for their hard work and dedication promoting awareness of dementia using many social media platforms. The campaign raised money for the Alzheimer Society of Ireland and The Rockmount Care Centre in Kilgarvan where their information booklet is still

on show to this day. The students' work has meant so much to many families. Their teacher nominated the group for the Kerry Garda Youth Awards 2019 which took place in January this year and it won the group award on the night. Further to that, Tralee Garda Station put the group forward for the National Garda Youth Awards that was meant to take place in April this year but was delayed due to COVID-19. RTÉ then chose to film them as part of this nomination. "The dedication and care 'Be Dementia Aware' showed throughout this project is an inspiration to all young people," Lorraine, the students' YSI guide, told the Killarney Advertiser. "Caoimhe, Julia, Ben, Aoife and Darja showed amazing commitment and passion as they worked tirelessly to promote awareness of Dementia and support families and people who have dementia. This award nomination is very well deserved and to be filmed by RTÉ Today has been the icing on the cake for the five students. It was such a fun afternoon with Bláthnaid and camera man Conor."

It is over a year after Kerry County Council promised to erect signs warning of the possibility of contracting Lyme disease at the entrance to Killarney National Park - but there is still no action. Last July, following calls by several county councillors from the Killarney area, Kerry County Council said it would put up warning signs on Council-owned lands in the vicinity of forest walks and at the entrance to the National Park. The disease, which is caught from ticks from deer and other wild animals, has been raised at countless Council and other public meetings. It was up for discussion again at last

Top award for Killarney's Jessie | By Michelle Crean Killarney's most celebrated actress - who is taking Hollywood by storm - is to be honoured with the Maureen O’Hara award. Kerry International Film Festival (KIFF) made the announcement yesterday (Thursday) with Jessie set to receive the accolade next month. The much-coveted award is offered exclusively to women who have excelled in film and KIFF are privileged to be presenting the award to Jessie Buckley on what would have been Maureen O’ Hara’s centenary year. Taking place from October 15 - 18, KIFF is a well-established festival that celebrates shorts, features, live film scores, emerging film talent and industry events. The core event of the festival will be held online in partnership with streaming platform Shift72 and, depending on Government guidelines, the festival also aims to host a physical element the event in partnership with the newly reopened Cinema

Jessie Buckley

Killarney. In keeping with their new format, KIFF will be presenting the award to Jessie via an online interview which will be available on the website and additional social media platforms throughout the festival. "It means so much, when your own people and own country get behind you like this and say you’re doing alright kid, that means a lot," Jessie Buckley said.

Calls to move “lethal dangerous” pedestrian crossings at roundabout Local councillors are calling on Kerry County Council to move pedestrian crossings away from busy roundabouts.

week’s Killarney Municipal District meeting where Cllr Niall Kelleher and Cllr Maura Healy-Rae asked if there was a progress report on the previous matter. However, Thursday’s meeting overran due to COVID-19 time limits and HealyRae’s question remained unanswered. The Killarney Advertiser understands that Kerry County Council are in the process of erecting such signs – 14 months after the initial promise. The Department of Culture, Heritage and the Gaeltacht, said in March this year that it does not intend to erect signage in Killarney National Park advising visitors to check themselves for ticks. The National Parks and Wildlife Service (NPWS) has placed warnings on its websites.

They have raised particular concerns on the crossing at the Cleeney roundabout – the scene of a fatal accident in July – but they have also raised issues with other junctions in the town. Mayor Brendan Cronin labelled the junction as “lethal dangerous” and questioned the need to have “uncontrolled

pedestrian crossings at the point where high volumes of traffic are exiting a roundabout on a national route”. Cllr Marie Moloney also questioned the proximity of crossings at the Cleeney Roundabout and Curtin Cross (Park Road roundabout), but warned it was already too late as “a life has already been lost, but no further loss of life must happen due to the location of these crossings”. Cllr Donal Grady called for all crossings to be moved at least 40 metres away from all roundabouts.

Pubs cautiously optimistic ahead of Monday’s reopening | By Sean Moriarty After six months closure one family run Killarney pub is both excited and apprehensive ahead of finally reopening their bar this coming Monday. After many false starts, 'Wet Pubs' those that do not serve food - will finally get the chance to reopen their doors next week. Bar owners and customers will have to adjust to a new way of operating including having counter service replaced by table service, social distancing rules will have to observed, customers will have to remain seated, and strict closing times will be in operation. Despite the new rules, implemented to reduce the spread of COVID-19, publicans across the town are looking forward to welcoming back customers for the first time since March. John C O’Shea and his mother Joan are both excited and apprehensive to reopen Jack C’s on the top of High Street. Joan has been behind the counter of the popular bar for the last 50 years and apart from obvious days like Christmas

Day, Good Friday and family funerals, her bar has never been closed. The O’Shea family took the decision to close their doors on Saturday, March 14, two days before the official Government announcement that closed all public

houses at the start of the pandemic’s restrictions. They have made a few noticeable changes to their bar as they prepare to welcome back their customers and friends. These include a screen at the bar and

sectioning off the seating areas. Joan – ever the traditionalist – uses the Irish word 'cabús' to describe these new sections. The word loosely translates into a snug or cubbyhole while the old US-English word caboose is a small train carriage, often used to house engineers and coupled to the rear of a large freight train. “I can’t wait to meet everyone,” she told the Killarney Advertiser. “I have spent the last six months saluting them on the street.” John warned that while there are many restrictions facing pub owners, the onus is on the customer to follow the new guidelines too. “The pubs will do their bit but it is up to customers to obey the rules too,” he said. However, he said he won’t believe he is actually open until he sees customers on the premises. Previous Government proposals included potential reopening dates in June, July and August and he remains cautiously optimistic that Monday’s date will remain on schedule. “We have had the rug pulled from under us too many times in the past,” he said.

Students' colourful mural brightens up town lane way | By Michelle Crean Local students alongside the Killarney Looking Good Committee (KLG) unveiled their colourful and very creative art piece in the town centre on Monday morning. Located in Chapel Lane, students and teachers from Killarney Community College proudly stood beside their ceramic tiles work which depicts the Muckross Abbey window, on the wall in the lane way. The project, by the then Fifth Years, began in October 2019 but was subsequently delayed as a result of COVID-19 and has only now been installed in recent days. Art teacher Michelle Mahony created a design based on one of the windows

in Muckross Abbey and only revealed it to the students once the piece was finished. "KGL had seen other pieces of our work and approached the school to see if we'd like to create something for the lane way to brighten it up," Michelle told the Killarney Advertiser. The project themes chosen were nature, our local environment, Killarney’s heritage and when creating their tiles, students had to leave some areas plain and glazed completely white. They then made 170 individual ceramic tiles using fresh clay, with each tile glazed using an array of colours and fired in the kiln twice. The project was funded through the Community Enhancement Programme of the Department of Rural and Commu-

nity Development. "We wanted something to connect with Killarney town. I chose a window from Muckross Abbey and the students didn't know what the design was. The lane way was chosen by KLG because being called Chapel Lane it has religious connections." Yvonne Quill from the Killarney Looking Good Committee added that they are

delighted to have worked with Michelle and the art department in Killarney Community College on the project. "Each tile is a mini artwork in itself with the detail that students added," she said. "The project was also aided by an SNA in the school who is also a ceramic artist Doirin Duggan. The installation at this location is appropriate given the ecclesiastical links to the lane."

SURVEY: Members of the Kilcummin Looking Good committee are encouraging locals to take part in a survey help develop their three to five year plan for the village.

Have your say on Kilcummin's future plan Over 3,000 locals in Kilcummin are being asked to have an input into the locality's future by completing a survey to future proof their community. | By Michelle Crean The Kilcummin Looking Good (KLG) committee have contracted the services of O’Leary and Associates to prepare a three to five year plan for the village focussing on developing their community. Infrastructure such as roads, footpaths, broadband etc., the aesthetics of the community such as green areas and signage, and most importantly the facilities within the community will all be

on the agenda. "This is an excellent opportunity for residents of Kilcummin to have their say in the planning process as the development of the area will impact you the most," Sinéad Collins, PRO - KLG, told the Killarney Advertiser. "Due to the restrictions of COVID-19 and public meetings, we are asking people to take part in an online survey. Council seeks €10m to fund water pipe replacement | By Sean Moriarty Kerry County Council has applied to Irish Water for €10 million in funding to replace water pipes in the greater Killarney area. The Council was responding to a motion by Cllr Marie Moloney who is concerned at the number of water breakages across the district. “Every week, Kerry County Council in conjunction with Irish Water are announcing breakages,” she told last week’s meeting of Killarney Municipal Council. A Council spokesperson told the meet-

ing that pipe replacement work at Ballyspillane, Lewis Road, Dalton’s Avenue, Marian Park, O’Kelly’s Villas, Woodlawn Rd, and Ross Rd in the town and outlying areas like Ballaugh, Coolcaslagh, Torrencahill, Rathmore, Barraduff, and Knockanes, all form part of a recent submission for funding by the Council to Irish Water. In a separate motion, Cllr Michael Gleeson asked if there were any plans to build a second supply reservoir at Sheehree. The current reservoir has a capacity for 30,000 M3 and a Council spokesperson said they had “no plans to develop a second one”.

ly." However, she added that if locals are not able to avail of the survey via their social media site then contact Kilcummin Rural Development from 9am to 4pm on 064 6643357, Tony 087 6258641 or Sheila 087 7944679, and they will arrange for the survey to be posted to you. "We will endeavour to send the survey to local organisations and community groups and we encourage as many peo-

ple as possible to complete the survey as it is important that everyone has the opportunity to contribute to the future development of our parish." The deadline for its completion is next Wednesday September 30. This community plan is kindly being funded by NEWKD CLG under the Leader programme and is also being supported by Kerry County Council, she added.

Killarney House receives prestigious Green Flag Award | By Michelle Crean There's been a lot of work behind the scenes thanks to the dedicated staff of Killarney House and Gardens - but it has all paid off as they have received their second Green Flag Award. Yesterday (Thursday) Minister Noonan congratulated the NPWS staff on the outstanding achievement as it was announced that Killarney House and Gardens had not only received the Green Flag but successfully retained it, which he said "adds to the significance of the occasion”. A Green Flag is the mark of a quality park or green space and is recognised throughout the world. Green Flag status ensures delivery of quality green

spaces, best practice management, plans for improvements and future works and the implementation of environmental sustainability within park management. The newly refurbished Killarney House and Gardens continues to serve as a gateway to Killarney National Park, and in these challenging times, plays an important role in the well-being of visitors from all over the country. "We're delighted to have received the Green Flag award for the second year in a row," Bríd Colhoun, Supervisor Guide with responsibility for the Green Flag Award, told the Killarney Advertiser. "We have to keep to a high standard. It's a great credit to our Head Gardener Michael Doyle and all the staff working in the house. We're looking forward to continued success into the future."

SUCCESS: After waiting for over two years for an operation to fix a 90 degree curvature of the spine, Ronan Foley, pictured here outside St Oliver's NS with his dad Tony, mom Caroline and brother Gavin, has been given a date for surgery next week. Photo: Michelle Crean

Date finally given for Ronan's operation After waiting in severe pain for over two and a half years for vital life-changing surgery Ronan Foley - whose family campaigned vigorously - has been given a date for next week. | By Michelle Crean The surgery - which was cancelled a number of times before - can't come soon enough according to his family who have seen a rapid deterioration of Ronan's spine - which is now at a curvature of over 90 degrees causing chronic pain all day everyday. His family, alongside staff at St Oliver's NS, TDs, politicians and locals, took part in a media campaign which was featured in the Killarney Advertiser and online to get an urgent date to help give him back a pain free life. This week his father Tony said that they are delighted to have finally secured a date for next Thursday - but are cautious in case it is cancelled again. "We have a provisional date, but the nearer we get to it the more nervous we are," Tony told the Killarney Advertiser this week. "We are delighted but cautious with it. We got the call two weeks ago but kept it to ourselves just in case. We only told family and friends at the weekend in case it got cancelled again." Ronan (14), who suffers from Cerebral Palsy, is waiting for his operation since March 2018 when he had a 42 degree curve in his spine. By October, this deteriorated to 79 degrees. The operation waiting time should only be three to

four months, according to Tony. "It was decided then that he was priority for surgery and that he'd have it in three to four months. We're two years down the road now and the curvature is over 90 degrees. He's in pain daily. He's either in the bed or lying on the floor on a duvet and it's impacting his organs. He is in a sitting position for a half hour or tops three quarters of an hour each day to eat and we're always asking him if he's comfortable." The operation for Ronan, who started in St Francis Special School just two weeks ago, will dramatically change his life. He is a very social child and has a fantastic personality. He loves it there and and it has really picked up his form. He has a fantastic life to get back to," Tony added. "We're hopefully at a conclusion now, but we're not over the line yet." Tony, from Killorglin, added that he and his family are so grateful to everyone who helped their campaign from staff at St Oliver's, the locals, TDs Michael Healy-Rae, Pa Daly, Norma Foley, Cllrs Mikey Sheey and Michael Cahill, and local company The Brand Geeks. "Minister for Health Stephen Donnelly has also been very good to us, very approachable and supportive. We can't thank everyone enough."

Kilcummin Looking Good are to receive €750, Kerry Parents & Friends Association Killarney €1,000, Kerry Parents & Friends Association Online Education Provision Team are to get €1,000, Ballydribeen Residents Association Killarney €1,000, Social Action Group, Rathmore CLG €1,500, Killarney Men's Shed €470, Killarney Water Rescue €750, while Killarney Celtic Football Club will receive €500. The programme is funded by the Department of Rural and Community Development. Overall in Kerry €62,000 has been awarded to 72 groups under the first round of the Community Enhancement Programme for 2020. Chairperson of the Local Community Development Committee, Cllr Niall Kelleher, said that the range of projects supported include COVID-19 capital

related expenditure, hand hygiene and safety measures at public amenities, purchase of IT equipment for community usage and to facilitate training for older people, improvements works to create safe outdoor recreation spaces, accessibility projects, home maintenance programmes, provision of comfortable, safe meeting spaces for older people. “This financial support for community and voluntary organisations across the county is most welcome and will complement grants provided under a range of other programmes. This kind of support is more essential than ever in a year in which community groups have made an immense contribution to the local response effort on COVID-19,” he said. A second round of funding has been made available by the Department under the Community Enhancement Programme. Over €155,000 is available and the closing date for applications is this coming Monday (September 21). Push for CCTV in town centre | By Sean Moriarty

Mayor of Killarney Brendan Cronin is to push Kerry County Council into providing CCTV for Killarney town centre. Cronin will ask the Council at this coming Monday’s meeting between the executive and elected members why the proposed CCTV remains on the long finger. He will ask: "In light of the numerous and repeated requests, I am seeking immediate clarification on the delay in providing

vital CCTV for Killarney. It is a matter of urgency that town centre CCTV is prioritised and provided for Killarney town which can be live monitored in Killarney Garda Station.”

Walking loop plans linger on | By Sean Moriarty The ongoing proposal of a dedicated walking and cycling loop around Lough Lein remains on the long finger despite the project getting Council approval over three years ago. A decision on Lough Lein, which according to Mayor Brendan Cronin would be the “equivalent of a greenway for Killarney” is in the hands the National Parks and Wildlife Service (NPWS) and Fáilte Ireland. Mayor Cronin, at last week’s Killarney Municipal District meeting, called on

Kerry County Council to request Eamon Ryan, the leader of the Green Party, to release funding for the project. “The Council is currently working with the NPWS and Fáilte Ireland to progress a section of this route to planning,” a Council spokesperson told the meeting. “Once this has been obtained Kerry County Council will be in a position to seek further funding for its construction under future calls for grant aid.” The proposed loop has involved with Fáilte Ireland, the National Parks and Wildlife Service, Kerry County Council and local walking and tourism interests. It has been on the Council agenda since at least April 2017.

Barraduff trials new smart level crossing technology | By Sean Moriarty Iarnrod Éireann is to trial a new system for operating unmanned level crossings on the Killarney to Mallow line.

A new train detection warning system is in place at the Stagmount level crossing between Rathmore and Barraduff. The technology, called a 'Decision Support System', will provide users with improved information about the approach of trains and to assist level crossing users on when it is safe or not to cross the line. The previous set up at Stagmount, known locally as 'The Freemount Gates', involved the opening and clos-

ing a double gate before road users cross the rail line. The idea was put forward after a previous plan to completely close the crossing met with local opposition. The closure would have forced at least 14 households to travel approximately 5kms on back roads to access the N72 road between two East Kerry villages. “The introduction of a new system of this kind has to comply with a rigorous safety procedure and also requires certification from the Commission of Railway Regulation before going live,” said an Irish Rail spokesperson. “The certification process is now at an advanced stage and we are hopeful that the system will be certified for the operation at this location in the coming months.”

Tributes have been paid to champion jockey Pat Smullen who died this week after a battle with pancreatic cancer.

Safe Streets plan now faces county wide challenge

| By Sean Moriarty

| By Sean Moriarty

The 43-year-old was one of Ireland’s greatest sports stars and rode winners in some of the greatest horse races on the planet. Career highlights include winning the Irish and UK Derbies with the Dermot Weld trained Harzand, he was a champion jockey on nine different occasions and twice won the Irish 1,000 Guineas with Nightime in 2006 and Bethrah in 2010. Killarney Racecourse manager Philip O’Brien, a former professional jockey, knew the Offaly man from his racing days. Smullen was a multiple winner at the Ross Road venue including a double during the 2003 July meeting when he rode 'Great Compton' to victory for Weld and 'Top Star' for Liam McAteer. “We would have shared the same changing rooms,” he told the Killarney Advertiser. “We were very privileged to see him race in Killarney, he rode winners all over the world, sometimes on horses worth over €1 million, and he came to Killarney and gave it his all. He was

a very modest man, a gentleman, and remained very grounded despite his success.” One of his greatest rides ever happened in Killarney – maybe not in terms of prestige but certainly marked him out as a highly skilled jockey – during the 2016 July meeting. Smullen was riding favourite 'Xsquared' in a two-mile one-furlong handicap when his saddle slipped. In a remarkable feat of skill and bravery he kept 'Xsquared' under control and fended off a late challenge from 'Black Label' to win the race against the odds. Smullen admitted at the time that he was out of control for much of the race. “That is horsemanship, travelling at 40mph, veins out through his eyes and he still dug deep to get the win,” Philip added. “He will be missed, even this year it was strange to see a horse in the Dermot Weld colours with a different jockey.” Smullen was due to race at the Cancer Trials Ireland Fundraising meeting this weekend but had already withdrawn from The Curragh event on medical advice.

The town’s Safe Streets programme is set to face a second challenge on Monday. Last week, the Killarney Advertiser was the first local media outlet to reveal that Cllr Donal Grady was seeking legal advice on the Safe Streets programme. Grady believes that the programme, which involves the widening of footpaths in the town centre and the closure of Plunkett St and Kenmare Place to traffic, is Kerry County Council’s covert way of introducing pedestrianisation to the town centre without proper consultation with elected members, the public and town centre businesses. The Council argues that the plan is in place to allow social distancing in the centre as the county continues to battle COVID-19. At last week’s Killarney Municipal District meeting several other elected councillors expressed their anger

at the way the plan has been executed and the way Kerry County Council has communicated changes to the plan. Cllr Jackie Healy-Rae, who is elected in the Castleisland Municipal District, is set to challenge the Safe Streets plan in every town in the county at Monday’s meeting of Kerry County Council’s executive and elected members. He will ask: “How much has the Town Centre Mobility Plans cost Kerry County Council to date. How much of this was funded by Kerry County Council's own resources and how much was drawn down in grants. Can a breakdown of the cost be given per Municipal District and a breakdown given on what the money was spent on, listing all materials and their quantities i.e. bollards, machinery, labour costs, and anything else. Can this be given per Municipal District also. Please include any funding paid to outside contractors for the purpose of the Town Centre Mobility Plan.”

FUNDRAISER: Siobhan Reen, Specialist Children’s Liaison Nurse for Kerry is urging people to go 'Up the Hill for Jack and Jill' for a socially-distanced challenge in October.

Killarney nurse to help vulnerable Kerry children

A Killarney nurse is behind a socially distanced fundraiser to help vulnerable Kerry children. | By Sean Moriarty 'Up the Hill for Jack and Jill' is an annual fundraiser for the nationwide home nursing charity that benefits 13 children in Kerry, including at least one Killarney family. To comply with crowd gathering rules there are no big hill events being organised but, instead, throughout the month of October participants can keep their challenge small, safe and local. Killarney-based Siobhan Reen is the Jack and Jill Foundation Specialist Children’s Liaison Nurse for Kerry. “Every day our families have their own hill to climb at home. With ‘Up the Hill for Jack and Jill’, we are asking people to physically climb a hill in solidarity

with those who can’t,” she said. "It’s about neighbour helping neighbour, friend helping friend and that community support really means so much to our families and our nurses.” The fundraiser is part of an SOS appeal underway to fill a €200,000 funding gap and to extend the age range of children supported by the charity from five to six years of age. Jack and Jill’s frontline home nursing care and endof-life care is more important than ever, given the lack of respite options in the community for the extra-special children it supports. People can register at www.jackandjill.ie for €16 which funds one hour of home nursing care and end-of-life care. No sponsorship card is required.

Killarney to host live online Culture Night event tonight Despite the annual Culture Night being forced to go online this year, Killarney artists will showcase their work in a special pre-recorded programme that will air tonight (Friday). It was recorded at Government Buildings in Killarney – the national Headquarters for the Department of Arts, Sport and Tourism. Their work will be presented across many media and genres within visual arts. “I would encourage everyone to try this new way of experiencing Culture Night,”

says the Cathaoirleach of Kerry County Council, Killarney-based Cllr Patrick Connor-Scarteen. “Online events give more people the opportunity to take part safely and enjoy what Kerry arts and culture has to offer.” The exhibition will have a virtual launch on the Arts Office Facebook page: @KerryCoArts. It will feature Fiachra Crowley, Elouise Flannery, Eileen Kennedy, Eveleen Murphy, Ann McNamee, Jacqueline O’Driscoll, Kate Plum, Kayleigh Ryall, Chris Shawand Dana Winder. "Retail staff have gone above and beyond for customers" | By Michelle Crean The rise in the staycation market has been a huge boost for one local store in what has a been a difficult year for retailers. DIFFERENT SEASON: After a difficult start to the season Mary Guerin, owner of Killarney View Guest House, says that staycations have been very strong. Photo: Grigoriy Geniyevskiy

“Bookings were completely wiped out”

One B&B owner has been benefiting from the staycation market after COVID wiped out their bookings for the year. | By Michelle Crean Mary Guerin, owner of the Killarney View Guest House on the Muckross Road, this week told the Killarney Advertiser that she had bookings right up until November - but all were cancelled due to the COVID crisis. With 99 percent of her guests from countries such as America, Australia and Europe, it’s been a very different year for Mary and her many staff in the B&B which overlooks the Flesk River. However, the two-storey guesthouse, which is just a six-minute walk from the INEC, 1.6km from the town centre, and 5.5 km from Ross Castle, is now proving popular with young couples mainly travelling down from Dublin. “99 percent of our guests came from America, Europe and Australia,” Mary said. “We were totally booked up until November and that was completely wiped out, so we had to go from zero.” Now most of the people coming are from Dublin, who are either internationals living in Ireland or have international partners, she explained. “They’re mostly young couples who are into the outdoors. The B&B is in a good location with most rooms overlooking the river, and guests enjoy climbing Car-

rantouhil. “ Growing up in The Irish Cottage B&B on the Muckross Road it was almost inevitable that Mary would follow close to the same path. Instead she opted for a teaching career and was seconded to Brussels for a number of years. She then returned and taught in Limerick. She opened Killarney View Guest House in July 1980 and balanced both careers for a number of years. For the past six years Mary has been working full-time in the B&B and is still working within the education sector. “I had a completely different career path. I worked as a secondary school teacher at a European school in Brussels for many years before returning to Limerick. It was a wonderful experience. “ Working alongside the expert advice of Fáilte Ireland, Mary says a range of safety measures have been put in place for guests. “We’re carrying out all protocols with Fáilte Ireland and the Safe Destination Kerry programme.” And although this year’s short season is beginning to wane, the weekends are still busy, she added. “It’s quietening now with the exception of the weekends.”

Trespass, located in the Killarney Outlet Centre, say they have had a busy few months since reopening to the public. Many safety measures have been put in place in the shop including floor markings, Perspex screens, the removal of stands on the shop floor to make space, regular sanitising of changing rooms and surfaces, and a dedicated room for staff if they feel unwell at work. "Since people were allowed outside their own area we've been exceptionally busy," Pat Horgan, Manager of Trespass, told the Killarney Advertiser. "We're an outdoors shop and people are walking and camping more this year. Shops like Trespass have seen a benefit as people are exploring their locality more, it has been good."

Lockdown was exceptionally hard for retailers and their staff but Pat said that they are delighted to be back serving their customers. "It was a long hard lockdown as staff were told that they might not be back until August 8. When we were called back, even though we were unsure how it'd go, it was great to be back, to walk in the door. We have a loyal customer base who come to us." Four changing rooms have been reduced to two and cleaned regularly. He added that because they are a chain store customers who are not comfortable trying on items can return them at any of their shops, even items bought online. He praised his three staff members saying they have gone above and beyond to make sure customers feel safe. "Staff have responded unbelievably to the needs of the people coming in. The staff in all shops have really gone above their duty and have really done exceptionally."

BOWLING FUN: Members of Fossa Active Retired are delighted to have received funding from the Community Support Fund towards the cost of two new bowling mats.

Fossa Active Retired receive funds for fun! | By Michelle Crean Members of Fossa Active Retired are currently enjoying getting back into the bowling spirit after receiving funding for new activity mats. After months of lockdown for many of the group's over 70s, members are once again coming together to enjoy a game of bowls although in more restricted numbers with a high level of safety measures in place. Every Thursday and Friday from 3pm to 5.30pm, they enjoy the social interaction of a game on the two new mats which were part funded by the Community Support Fund from Kerry County Council. Costing over €1,200 each, the group were delighted to receive €750 towards their new purchase. "Fossa Active Retirement Association would like to acknowledge receipt of

financial support from Kerry County Council under the Community Support Fund which is really appreciated as it is a great help towards the purchase of two new indoor bowling mats," Secretary of Fossa Active Retirement, Brendan Lynch, told the Killarney Advertiser. He explained that the group are lucky that it has the space in Fossa hall to be able to play bowling in a safe manner. "Normally we have three mats but we're limiting ourselves to two mats, eight people per mat. The hall is spacious so we can socially distance in a safe manner. We're very lucky as our COVID officer has done a great job." And he added that people are delighted to be back to a bit of activity and they're following all the guidelines by distancing and hand sanitising. "It's a nice gentle activity, it's fun. For most of us we enjoy the camaraderie."

Funding for refurbishment of 50 social housing units | By Michelle Crean Funding to the tune of €991,600 has this week been announced for the refurbishment of 50 social housing units in the county. Minister for Education and Kerry TD Norma Foley welcomed the approval of grant funding under the 2020 Voids Stimulus Programme to enable the refurbishing of 50 social housing units for the purpose of re-letting them to individuals and families. As part of the July Stimulus Programme, the Department of Housing, Local Government and Heritage

announced over €40 million for the refurbishment of voids, the largest single amount ever announced under the voids programme. All Local Authorities made applications which were categorised into three funding streams; standard voids at an average cost of approximately €11,500, homeless voids at an average cost of €17,300 and long-term voids at an average cost of €47,000. Kerry County Council received an allocation of €424,550 for the refurbishing of 36 standard voids and a further €567,050 for the refurbishing of longterm voids.

On Tuesday the Government announced Ireland’s new medium-term plan for dealing with Coronavirus. ‘Living with COVID-19’ will help the country to go about their daily lives as much as possible, while managing the behaviour of the virus, according to Taoiseach Micheál Martin. The Framework consists of 5 Levels. Level 1 will mean the least severe of the restrictions with Level 5 the most serious. The Killarney Advertiser took to the streets and asked if you felt that this plan is the right move forward. Here's what you had to say: PATSY O’FLAHERTY

KERRY COUNTY COUNCIL NOTICE TO OWNERS AND OCCUPIERS ROADS ACT 1993 ROADSIDE TREES, DITCHES & HEDGES Kerry County Council wishes to give notice that under the terms of the Roads Act, 1993, landowners and occupiers of land are obliged to take all reasonable care to ensure that the trees, ditches, hedges and other vegetation growing on their land are not or could not become a danger to people using or working on a public road. Examples of hazards might be dead or dying trees, ditches or hedges interfering with traffic, blocking footpaths, obscuring road signs or obscuring a view of the road ahead. You are required to fell, cut, log, trim or remove such trees, ditches and hedges. Adequate signposting should be provided and the Council and Gardaí notified before works commence. Hedgecutting operations, as far as possible, should only be undertaken outside the critical nesting period of 1st March to 31st August.

LIABILITY FOR DAMAGE OR INJURY RESULTING FROM SUCH HAZARDS WILL REST WITH THE LANDOWNER/OCCUPIER

JAPANESE KNOTWEED When cutting your hedges this year, please be aware of the invasive species Japanese Knotweed (JK) Fallopia Japonica. If you do find Japanese Knotweed on your property, the most important thing that you can do is prevent any further spread of the species. Do not strim, cut, flair or chip the plants. Tiny fragments can regenerate new plants and cause the Japanese Knotweed to spread. It is also advised not to dig, move or dump soil which may contain plant material as this will contribute to its spread. Report it! The location and extent of the infestation should be reported to your local Municipal District Office/Area Office.

DUTY TO FACILITATE DRAINAGE OF WATER FROM PUBLIC ROADS Landowners/occupiers are also reminded of their duty under the Roads Act, 1993 to facilitate the drainage of water from public roads and to prevent water, soil or other matter from flowing or falling onto public roads especially at entrances to fields and farmyards.

FAILURE TO COMPLY WITH THESE OBLIGATIONS IS AN OFFENCE LIABLE TO PROSECUTION

UNAUTHORISED ADVERTISING ON PUBLIC ROADS Please take notice that it is an offence under Section 71 of the Roads Act, 1993 to erect, place or retain on a public road, a sign, vehicle including a vehicle with ‘For Sale’ signs, or other structure or thing used for the purposes of advertising, the sale of goods, the provision of services or other similar purpose without lawful authority or the consent of the Roads Authority.

THIS INCLUDES PLACING VARIABLE MESSAGE SIGNS ON PUBLIC ROADS, FOOTPATHS OR HARD SHOULDERS FOR THE PURPOSE OF ADVERTISING EVENTS Kerry County Council may without notice arrange for the removal and storage of any such unauthorised signs, vehicles or other structures or things and may recoup the removal and storage costs from the person claiming the unauthorised item. In certain circumstances, following a period of storage, the Council may arrange for the disposal of the unauthorised item. The person who erects, places or retains the sign or advertisement and the person on whose behalf the sign or advertisement is exhibited shall be guilty of an offence and is liable to prosecution.

By Evie Dunmore A lady must have money and an army of her own if she is to win a revolution - but first, she must pit her wits against the wiles of an irresistible rogue bent on wrecking her plans... and her heart. Lady Lucie is fuming. She and her band of Oxford suffragists have finally scraped together enough capital to control one of London’s major publishing houses, with one purpose: to use it in a coup against Parliament. But who could have predicted that the one person standing between her and success is her old nemesis, Lord Ballentine? Or that he would be willing to hand over the reins for an outrageous price - a night in her bed. Lucie tempts Tristan like no other woman, burning him up with her fierceness and determination every time they clash. But as their battle of wills and words fans the flames of long-smouldering devotion, the silver-tongued seducer runs the risk of

becoming caught in his own snare. As Lucie tries to out-manoeuvre Tristan in the boardroom and the bedchamber, she soon discovers there’s truth in what the poets say: all is fair in love and war.

Dahlias perform best in a sunny spot One of the stars of the autumn garden is surely the dahlia.

PROFESSIONS: Br. Ronan Sharpley OFM and Br. Denis Aherne OFM, were professed at a special ceremony at the Friary on Saturday.

Friary welcomes two new Brothers

The Friary welcomed two brothers into the Franciscan Order on the occasion of their Solemn Profession. Br. Denis Aherne OFM, a native of Listowel, and Br. Ronan Sharpley OFM from Ballinamore in County Leitrim were professed at a special ceremony at the Friary on Saturday. Denis entered the order shortly after leaving secondary school and spent two years in the Postulancy in Killarney. From there he moved to do his novitiate year in Wisconsin in the United States. After his first Profession in the USA he moved to the Franciscan Study Centre in Canterbury, England where he spent a year and on return to Ireland moved to the Friary, Athlone where he spent four years there doing various courses and completed his Formation as a Friar. “Br Denis is a very talented artist and a writer of Icons,” Brother Pat Lynch told the Killarney Advertiser. “He made the two habits that both Ronan and he wore at their Solemn Profession.” After competing a Civil Engineering degree at UCG Br Ronan went to El Salvador, Central America with Viatores

Christi where he worked for four years on a couple of engineering projects in the Gotera area. It was there that he met an Irish Franciscan Friar, Alfred Loughran OFM from Limerick. He returned to Ireland and entered the Franciscan postulancy in the Friary, Killarney, this was followed by his novitiate year in the Friary, Ennis. After making his first Profession he too moved to Canterbury, where he did a year of Franciscan Studies. On his return he was based in the Friary Athlone while studying in Maynooth. “Ronan has just completed three years of theology studies at the Pontifical Gregorian University, in Rome and during his three years there he lived in St. Isidore’s College,” added Brother Lynch. Both Denis and Ronan will take up their first assignments as Solemnly Professed Friars in a new Youth Initiative in the Franciscan Friary (The Abbey), Francis St, Galway.

Apart, maybe, from roses, I can’t think of another plant which is available in such a vast array of colours, shapes and sizes. Dahlias are broadly categorised into two groups; bedding dahlias and border dahlias. The former are generally treated as annuals, are raised from seed, stay small and are excellent for use in pots, group planting or bedding borders. The latter are perennial and range in height from 30cm to over a meter. They are sub-divided according to flower structure. For example, there is the self-explanatory pompom dahlia with its round flower heads which are no larger than 5cm across. Other categories include single, waterlily, collerette, anemone and cactus. It is only in recent years that I have started to appreciate dahlias, having always thought them to be old fashioned. I particularly like the pompoms, such as D. ‘Moor Place’ which is the deepest wine red, and ‘Noreen’ which is a beautiful shade of pink. The collerettes are interesting in that they have an outer ring of ‘ray-florets’ and an inner ring of shorter florets around a central disc. The outer and inner rings of florets are often contrasting colours, such as D. ‘Chimborazo’, which is red and yellow. ‘Curiosity’ has maroon petals, tipped in cream, with a deep cream collar and dark yellow central disc. An example of a cactus flowered dahlia would be ‘lady Kerkrade’, a favourite for exhibitions growing up to 1.2 meters. Many dahlias are also excellent as cut-flowers. Dahlias originate from Mexico and Guatamala where they apparently grow as weeds, and came to Europe with the Spanish conquistadores. In the 18th century Spanish botanist Antonio Cavinilles had acquired just a few seeds from three varieties and started growing them in the botanic gardens of Madrid. He went on to

breed unique varieties and soon shared seeds with botanists all over Europe. He named the dahlia after the Swedish botanist, Andreas Dahl. Dahlias can be a little tricky to grow in some gardens, which is logical when you stop to think that their homeland is Mexico! If you have heavy wet soil, it is advisable to create a bed specially for them. A raised bed with top-soil compost and a good deal of sharp sand will be ideal. They also perform best in a sunny spot, sheltered from the wind. If you can give them these conditions, they will reward you! Dahlias are usually grown from tubers which are available in early spring. This is the most cost-effective way of buying them, but also gives you a lot more choice. Grown in pots, the choice is limited, and the plants are weaker than they would be if grown from tubers. For tall varieties it is advisable to place bamboo canes at time of planting so the plant can be tied as it grows. When plants are about 40cm tall, pinch out growing tips to encourage bushy plants, and if you're aim is achieving optimum flower size, restrict flowers to three or five, for smaller varieties seven or nine. Dead head to ensure repeat flowering. It is advisable in our climate to lift the tubers in the winter just as the foliage blackens from the cold. Remove stems to about 10cm and brush off as much soil as possible. Dry upside down, dust with fungicide such as yellow sulphur powder, and store in boxes of dry peat or sand. Check now and again for signs of rotting and cut off affected parts – applying fungicide again. Alternatively, if you are growing them in their own bed, cover the bed with a deep layer of mulch, then cover with a sheet of plastic to keep the tubers as dry and frost free as possible.

The Irish Red Cross launches emotive TV ad campaign As part of the 'Health Care in Danger' initiative, the Irish Red Cross this week launched an emotive TV ad campaign. The ad, which will air across Irish TV channels for the next five weeks, shows a man rushing his seriously injured young daughter to hospital, only to find that the hospital has been bombed and is now just rubble.  The campaign is part of the wider 'Health Care in Danger' initiative of the Red Cross Red Cresent movement, led by the International Committee of the Red Cross. The aim of the initiative is to implement solutions to protect healthcare workers, facilities, vehicles and patients in countries affected by conflict and other emergencies. Since February of this year alone, ICRC has recorded over 600 violent COVID-19 related attacks against health care providers and patients in over 40 countries. The number of major attacks committed against aid workers in 2019 surpassed all previous recorded years. In Syria, health staff have been repeatedly targeted, with 47 attacks and 36 fatalities reported. By drawing attention to the issue of violence against health personnel, facilities and vehicles, and its negative impact on the delivery of healthcare, the Irish Red Cross hopes to highlight that healthcare is #NotATarget and

broaden public understanding of this serious humanitarian concern. "Irish people have continually shown an interest in and a capacity to care deeply about humanitarian issues around the world," Trevor Holmes, Secretary General at the Irish Red Cross, said. "The Irish Red Cross with the International Red Cross movement

hope this TV campaign will heighten awareness of the violence directed against doctors, nurses, paramedics, ambulance drivers and attacks on hospitals and other healthcare centres, which ultimately can mean the difference between life and death for the sick and injured. Everyone has the right to healthcare, even in conflict.”

The restaurant in Seoul is using the robot named ‘Aglio Kim’ which uses Artificial Intelligence (AI), to deliver food to customers. Developed by South Korean telecoms company KT Corp, customers can order through a touch-screen on the table, and then the 1.25-meter-tall robot brings the food using its visual SLAM (Simultaneous Localisation And Mapping) capabilities to avoid obstacles and navigate around customers. The AI robot is equipped with food trays which can carry up to 30 kilograms and an LCD screen and speaker that communicate in both Korean and English. It can even deliver food to up to four tables at once. “Customers found the robot serving quite unique and interesting, and also felt safe from the Coronavirus,” Lee Youngho, a manager at the Mad for Garlic restaurant which has tested the robot this month, said. KT said that they aim to supply more robots for restaurants this year and will unveil a second model with AI voice recognition technology early next year.

Listen to the music Trump! Someone in President Trump's PR team really needs to start paying attention. Today (Friday), marks 45 days to the US presidential election. The campaign is getting hotter by the day and Trump is no stranger to outlandish publicity stunts. He likes to use popular songs as a soundtrack to his campaign rallies – songs with carefully chosen lyrics to make him sound great. His choice of Creedence Clear-

water Revival’s ‘Fortunate Son’ at a rally in Michigan raised a few eyebrows. Yes it contains the lyric: “Hail to the Chief” which surely stokes Trump’s ego. The problem is ‘Fortunate Son’ is about how rich kids avoid getting drafted for war and how military conflict really only affects the poor. Trump famously dodged conscription to the Vietnam War, claiming bone spurs in his feet.

The song was released at the height of the vicious Asian conflict. It is not the first time Trump has misused songs for rally campaign purposes. In June, veteran rockers The Rolling Stones threatened legal action over Trump’s use of their 'You Can't Always Get What You Want' as a backing track to his campaign rallies. Trump also drew the ire of Tom Petty’s family after using 'I Won’t Back Down' at another rally.

Barbados to break away from Britain The Caribbean island of Barbados is set to remove Britain’s Queen Elizabeth II as Head of State and declare itself a republic. Barbados will celebrate the 55th anniversary of its independence from Britain on November 30 and Bajan Government officials announced this week that the country will become a republic by that time. Since independence, the country has

retained Queen Elizabeth as its head of State. "The time has come to fully leave our colonial past behind," the island's Governor-General Sandra Mason said in parliament on Tuesday. “Barbadians want a Barbadian Head of State.” Queen Elizabeth is Head of State of the United Kingdom and 15 other formerly-British ruled countries, where she is represented by a governor-general.

Conor has been involved with development and humanitarian organisation PII, a development and humanitarian organisation that supports projects on the ground in 54 countries to advance children’s rights and equality for girls. Following a meeting of the Board of Directors last week, the organisation announced his appointment as the new Chair of the Board of Directors, while Aoife Kelly-Desmond of A&L Goodbody was announced as the new Vice-Chair. Mr. Faughnan is the current Director of Consumer Affairs with AA Ireland and a frequent commentator on transport, motoring, and consumer issues. He has been on the Board of Directors of PII since 2013, and has taken the role over from former Chair, Bernard Daly. His experience in advocacy and public affairs has proved extremely valuable during his tenure to date, particularly through his involvement on the Marketing and Fundraising sub-committee. Mr. Faughnan said it was an honour to

Our mission is clear: we strive for a just world where children’s rights are realised, and they can fulfil their potential. We work with partners in development and humanitarian contexts in 54 countries to achieve this mission, and are part of a global federation operating across 76 countries. Many of our Irish supported projects are in West Africa, and we prioritise the provision of quality and inclusive education in much of our work.”

Kelly hits out at Johnson’s food blockades claim MEP Seán Kelly has rubbished claims by the British Prime Minister, Boris Johnson, suggesting the EU will stop the transport of food products from Great Britain to Northern Ireland as “a deliberate attempt to misinterpret mutually designed provisions in the Protocol on Northern Ireland” and nothing more than “an audacious act to justify the breaking of international law”. “The Protocol itself was specifically designed to protect the Good Friday Agreement, including avoiding a hard border on the island of Ireland," the Ireland South MEP and Leader of Fine Gael in the EU Parliament said. "However, the comments of the Prime Minister bring to the frontline once again concerns all across Ireland from the agriculture sector, and the access of Irish products to the GB market, particularly that of beef." The economic integration on the

island of Ireland has resulted in the development of a highly intertwined agri-food sector, he added. "The GB market is of utmost importance for Irish farmers, and we must do everything we can to maintain competitive access. “With such exposure to any change in market access, the Irish agricultural sector needs to be front and centre of the EU's farmers €5bn Brexit compensation fund. This is not a zero sum game and it has significant real life implications not just for Irish producers, but also for British consumers who will experience higher prices in their supermarkets on a wide variety of products," he warned. “I would strongly urge the British Prime Minister to change his tact and return to building trust with the EU so that a mutually beneficial and fair deal can be made. The first step of which is simply to honour previous agreement.”

Four common fitness questions

Recently I have had new clients start with us at Activate, and they prompted me to write this. Many of them said they had been thinking about joining a gym for a long time, and they were confused because they had so many questions. So I’ll quickly answer four super common questions for you! 1. Will lifting weights make me bulky? No! It’s actually quite tough to pack on lean muscle. It’s doable, and we can help you do it if that’s your goal. But no one comes to the gym and suddenly looks like a bodybuilder with bulging muscles. That just doesn’t happen! No one in here looks “bulky”. We’ve got strong people for sure, but if you watch a class, you’ll just see normal fit people. Come on by and see what I mean! 2. I’m over 30 and have never worked out. Will I be able to improve my physique? Yes! You can make changes at 30, 40, 50, 60, 70, 80, 90, and even 100! The body responds to exercise positively at any age. We have clients at all ages, and they’re all improving their fitness. Every single one. No matter how old you are, exercise will produce positive changes! It’s never too late to start a fitness programme. At Activate we run programmes for children as young as four and right up to our master's clients many of whom are in their 80s and getting stronger by the week!

3. What are some fitness and nutrition hacks to build muscle fast? Two things: eating the right amount of protein and lifting weights regularly. How much protein and how much lifting? Well, that’s a little more complicated, but a good coach - like me - can help you figure it out. To start, take a look at your diet. Is it mostly carbs and fat? If so, you need some protein. And are you lifting weights that challenge your strength? If not, you’ll need to start. A good coach can show you how to do it safely! 4. How do I get six-pack abs as quickly as possible? To see abs, a person generally needs to reduce body fat. This is sometimes called “toning up”. Here’s a secret: you can’t decide where you’ll lose the fat. Like doing one thousand sit-ups won’t reduce abdominal fat. Your body will decide where to reduce the fat, and the best plan is regular bouts of cardio and strength training at the right intensity along with appropriate rest, recovery and dialled in nutrition. You want to build muscle and burn fat - and you can do this at the same time. I’d love to show you how, but it doesn’t happen by accident and without a plan in 99.9% of cases. If you still have questions, Google won’t give you a specific answer. Drop me a line at brian@activate.ie and I’ll be sure to respond.

Rockwell College to develop female boarding facilities Rockwell College, one of Ireland’s leading co-educational boarding schools for secondary school students has announced the development of on-site boarding facilities for female students. This significant development will see the on-site boarding facilities available to female students from the start of the 2021 academic year. Currently, female boarders attending Rockwell College stay with locally-based host families. Based in Cashel, Co. Tipperary, Rockwell College is one of few co-educational boarding schools in Ireland, having been the first of Ireland’s larger boarding schools to introduce co-education in 1988. Currently, over 500 students attend Rockwell College, including day boarders, five-day boarders and seven-day boarders. Rockwell College welcomes students from across Ireland and internationally, contributing to its strong multicultural environment. This historic move for Rockwell College will see female boarders fully integrated into residence life in the college, offering them a comfortable home away from home, but with more independence. Twin rooms and a dorm room will be available to female students from first year through to sixth year. Located on a 350 hectare lakeside estate, the female boarding residence will feature many rooms overlooking the lake, with access to a range of facilities for the use of boarders exclusively. Additional facilities available to students include a 20-meter swimming pool, a modern gym

and more. This is in addition to the yearround sports schedule available to girls which offers a variety of sports. This is a very exciting development for Rockwell College and our female boarders," Audrey O’Byrne, Rockwell College Principal, said. "Female students are an integral part of life and our community here in Rockwell College and we can offer students so much on-site to allow them to excel both inside and outside the classroom. Developing on-site boarding facilities for girls here in Rockwell College has been a long-term goal of ours as we want them to enjoy the same experience as the boys, which we know is so beneficial to them. For families, we also wanted to allow them the opportunity for their children to be educated together, enjoying the same opportunity in a residential setting.” She added that they are very proud of the strong comradery and community spirit among students and staff, which is carried on throughout life through the worldwide Rockwell alumni. "There is a place for everyone in Rockwell College and our promise to parents and students is to provide our students with a strong foundation for their future, ensuring that each student can fulfil their potential in whatever aspect of their lives they choose, be that through academic, sporting or cultural achievements.” Rockwell College will host an Open Day for prospective students and their parents on Saturday, October 3 subject to Government restrictions around events at that time. Please check www.rockwellcollege.ie for updates.

Skoda introduce cyclist warning technology Skoda is set to introduce new technology that will allow pedestrians and cyclists hear the approach of its electric cars. The fourth generation Octavia has just been released in Skoda’s home country of the Czech Republic and the new car is expected in Irish dealerships soon. Liam Lynch Car Sales in Farranfore is the local Skoda dealer. Like all car brands, Skoda is moving towards electric and hybrid technology, but one downside is that these type of engines make little or no noise which could be dangerous to other road users, especially in an urban environment. The new Octavia iV and Octavia vRS iV both feature a high-voltage lithium-ion battery with a capacity of 37 Ah and providing 13 kWh.

This enables an all-electric and a projected zero‑emission‑range of up to 60km. In electric driving mode at speeds of up to 50 km/h, an E-noise sound generator is fitted under the right front wing which will produce a specific noise, helping pedestrians and cyclists to hear the electric Octavia iV sooner and more easily. Other new technology includes Exit Warning which lets the occupants know if another vehicle or a cyclist is approaching from behind when opening the car door. Skoda is one of the world’s biggest supporters of cycling. It is the vehicle sponsor for the Tour de France, and locally Liam Lynch Motors supports the annual Ring of Kerry Charity Cycle. Much of the new technology fitted to Skoda cars has been developed in association with international cycling federations.

Fassbender must wait another year for Le Mans 24 hours debut Local Hollywood A lister Michael Fassbender will have to wait until next June to make his debut in the 24 Hours of Le Mans. While that was always his intention, there was a glimmer of hope that he may have contested the classic twice around the clock race in France this weekend. Usually run in June, the world’s biggest and most-famous endurance race gets underway tomorrow afternoon at La Sarthe in North West France, after being previously postponed from its origi-

nal mid-summer date. This season Fassbender is contesting the European Le Mans series, a direct feeder to the main event with the Proton Dempsey Team. Up until Tuesday this week, Proton Dempsey had not revealed their third driver for one of four cars entered in this weekend’s classic. Crucially, the team nominated Christian Ried and Ricardo Pera to drive their Porsche 911 RSR but the third seat remained unfilled until this week. Ried and Fassbender share a car in the Eu-

ropean Le Mans series and there were hopes that the Fossa man would get the third seat. However, on Tuesday Proton Dempsey announced a team reshuffle and French man Julien Andlauer was named as their third driver in a third car as Aus-

tralian Matt Campbell was listed to partner to Ried. As a result there is no room in the squad for Fassbender whose next European Le Mans series event with the team is the Four Hours of Monza in Italy on October 11.

Give yourself the best start possible ahead of exams

The return to school has been a huge adjustment for everyone. Students and teachers are getting used to one-way systems, more restricted movement from class to class, practising social distancing and the wearing of masks all day long in school. While school is a very different place, the people and the purpose is the same. For those of you who have started in Sixth Year, you have done so watching the media hype surrounding the Leaving Cert group that have gone before you. In the past two weeks you have seen inflated results and consequently a profound jump in points for many CAO courses in Round 1 offers as well listening to the media surrounding the noticeable difference between the grades received by students from their schools and the actual grade awarded following the standardisation process. It can’t have been easy watching this all unfold while you get your head around what lies ahead for you in your final year in secondary

school. While we don’t have a crystal ball, it is far more likely that points in 2021 will be more in line with previous years. This year is about you. Your teachers will make you a priority, understanding that you feel extra pressure because of time lost in Fifth Year. Remember that adjustments have been made to the exams in 2021 to try to reduce some of that pressure and information about project work is due to be issued to the schools earlier than normal.

A GOOD ROUTINE

Although the school environment feels different, the advice is the same. Start Sixth Year with a good routine. Get out of those starting blocks early! The work that you do between this and mid-term break is critical to lay the foundations for proper revision later on. It is inevitable that there will be disruption during the school year with students and teachers having to miss school because of having symptoms, awaiting test results or unfortunately contracting the virus.

You have learned to survive through a lockdown, you can learn to live with the disruption. It will help greatly if you establish a good routine for yourself from the beginning. Start by familiarising yourself with the amendments to the exams for 2021 so that you don’t waste time covering material that is not required. Your teachers will be focusing a lot on the exam papers so from the start get familiar with the structure of the papers and identify where the main marks are allocated and what sections are compulsory. Try to get into study mode now. Make it part of your daily routine from Monday to Friday and choose one day over the weekend to catch up on revision. Use any free time in school as an opportunity to get some work done in a structured environment with the support of teachers and classmates. Huge strides have been made by all schools in using online platforms to upload notes and work when disruption occurs so we are all in a better place technologically than were pre-COVID. Identify two people in each of your

subjects that you can buddy up with at a social distance or virtually in terms of explaining work or exchanging notes in the event of you needing to be absent from school. Keep in mind the end goal of giving your very best performance in the exams in June and work towards that. All the best athletes do their heavy training in the early stages of the season – follow that lead. Sow the seed in September and you will reap the reward in June. Let the aim for this month be to settle back to school and establish a good routine in terms of homework and study. Give yourself the best start possible!

"I'm delighted I got my first choice" | By Michelle Crean It's been a tumultuous year for all the Leaving Cert students and no more so than for Rathmore student Gemma Cremin - who wrote a weekly column for the Killarney Advertiser during the COVID crisis.

SUCCESS: Gemma Cremin, who wrote a weekly Leaving Cert column for the Killarney Advertiser during the COVID crisis, is delighted she secured her first preference.

However, even though there was months of huge uncertainty regarding whether the exams would go ahead, the introduction of the Calculated Grades, and how the standardisation of results would translate into college places, the former Scoil Phobail Sliabh Luachra student can happily reveal that she has secured her first choice. "I got my first choice which is Home Eco-

nomics and Religion in St Angela's Sligo, which is part of NUI Galway," Gemma told the Killarney Advertiser. "It's a five year Masters and I've my accommodation and everything sorted." On Monday last week Gemma, who had her mom Elma by her side for support at home, logged into the Students Portal online and was thrilled to see all her hard work paid off as she received over 500 points. On Friday last she was even happier to learn that she had secured her college course. However, on Monday this week, like many students, Gemma found out the teacher's grading and was left disappointed with some of her results. "I got over 500 points which is great,

but at the same time we got to see the teacher's marks and I went down a grade in four subjects which is disappointing. I worked hard but it doesn't affect my college place. I have appealed the Home Economics one because of the project it's just to know." And although she says it's brilliant and a relief to have this difficult Leaving Cert year over with, she added that it was still very hard on every one of the students. "You don't have the same sense of achievement of sitting the exams." Now she's looking forward to an induction into her new course at the end of October and a full start on November 2. "It's a full on course Monday to Friday from 9am to 5pm and I'm looking forward to the teaching practice."

SHOP LOCAL: A new campaign is being launched in Kerry this week to encourage people to shop and spend locally.

New Kerry shop local campaign launched A new campaign is being launched in Kerry this week to encourage people to shop and spend locally. The campaign, which is being spearheaded by Kerry County Council and its local partners and stakeholders, will use local media and social media platforms to promote a ‘Shop in Kerry/ An Siopa Áitiúil’ message. The aim is to encourage consumers in the county to support the local economic recovery by spending locally while observing all of the public health advice and restrictions. The Cathaoirleach of Kerry County Council, Cllr Patrick Connor-Scarteen said that during a time of crisis, the people of Kerry have always pulled together and supported each other. He is urging people to show their support for local shops and businesses at this time by spending locally, thereby helping the Kerry economy through the COVID-19 pandemic. "The entire local economy has been severely impacted by the Coronavirus pandemic. Shops and businesses across Kerry have, however, shown great resilience by adapting and making it easier in so many ways for customers to avail of their services and buy their products. Delivery services and click-and-collect have become the norm for many retailers," he said. "Now it’s our turn as customers and consumers to show our solidarity with those businesses and show our appreciation for how they have adapted and changed in the current challenging environment to continue to supply goods and services. Everyone has a part to play by shopping locally and spending

locally." Chief Executive of Kerry County Council, Moira Murrell added that "spending locally in our shops and businesses across Kerry means supporting local jobs and maintaining employment in the local economy". Every euro counts when it comes to assisting the economic recovery in our county, she explained. "Keeping our towns and villages viable and vibrant is a central objective of the shop local message. The COVID-19 restrictions have raised people’s awareness of local businesses and the vital service provided by local shops. We are asking everyone in Kerry, when it comes to their shopping to think local and shop local." The new campaign emphasises that when shopping locally, everyone should stay safe and adhere strictly to the Government and public health guidelines on hand hygiene, cough etiquette, social distancing and the wearing of masks. Kerry County Council continues to support shops and businesses in Kerry in a number of other ways including the administration of the Business Restart Grant, a business support helpline, an online directory of shops and businesses which have reopened and a series of online webinars and training events. For Cornelius On the day when the weight deadens, on your shoulders and you stumble, may the clay dance to balance you. And when your eyes freeze behind the grey window and the ghost of loss gets in to you, may a flock of colours, indigo, red, green and azure blue come to awaken in you a meadow of delight. When the canvas frays in the currach of thought and a stain of ocean blackens beneath you, may there come across the waters a path of yellow moonlight to bring you safely home. May the nourishment of the earth be yours, may the clarity of light be yours, may the fluency of the ocean be yours, may the protection of the ancestors be yours. I gave to you my love, You can only guess How much you gave to me in happiness, I thank you for the love you each have shown, But now it’s time I travelled on alone. So grieve a while for me, If grieve you must, Then let your grief be comforted by trust, It’s only for a time that we must part, So bless the memories within your heart, I wont be far away, for life goes on, So if you need me, call and I will come. Though you can’t see or touch me, I’ll be near, And if you listen within your heart, You’ll hear. All my love around you soft and clear, And then, when you must come this way alone, I’ll greet you with a smile, and say “Welcome Home”. Loved and remembered by your sister Jean, brother John, sister-in-law, brothersin-law, nieces & nephews.

Always remembered by your loving family.

‘We were collecting for the Red Cross’ JOHN O’REGAN

• Kerry soccer chief denies that COVID restrictions were breached • O’Regan refutes “untrue” reports of large crowds and admission fees • FAI confirm that investigation is underway

| By Adam Moynihan

The Secretary of the Kerry District League, John O’Regan, has said that the money he collected from spectators at a recent game at Mounthawk Park in Tralee was for charity. O’Regan denies claims that he charged an admission fee of €5 at the Premier A League Final between Killarney Athletic and Killarney Celtic, a match that was supposed to be played behind closed doors in line with COVID-19 restrictions. He also rejects suggestions that upwards of 180 people were at the league decider, stating that the initial accusations were made by someone with a “personal vendetta” which stems from O’Regan’s friendship with disgraced former FAI CEO John Delaney. Meanwhile, as was reported by Paul Rowan and Mark Tighe of The Sunday

Times, the FAI have said that they are “investigating attendances at fixtures in Kerry”.

MONEY

Speaking to the Killarney Advertiser on Monday, O’Regan confirmed that fans were, indeed, asked for money as they entered the ground – as had been reported by multiple attendees – but the long-serving secretary insisted that the money in question was for charity. “We weren’t allowed to charge but we were collecting for the Red Cross,” O’Regan said. “And what we were asking people to do was to make a donation. Anybody who wanted to donate to the Red Cross was allowed to do so. And people did donate generously. “Next Thursday night we’ll be presenting the Red Cross with a cheque for €1,000 that we collected at the game. But there was no charge as such. “Now, the players were charged €2, as

always. We’re entitled to do that. That’s a development levy that everyone pays. Otherwise we wouldn’t have Mounthawk Park. It’s a levy that was agreed by all the clubs and very few people complained about it. “We’re still developing as you can see. We’re starting another bit of a stand at the back of the goals. We haven’t made a bob for I don’t know how long and we’ve got nothing from the FAI. We have insurance and we have work that was done by builders and things over the years. Our reserves are starting to run down a bit.”

GUIDELINES

As for the number of spectators watching the game itself, O’Regan accepted that there may have been people there who shouldn’t have been, but he also asserted that “no guidelines were broken” by the Kerry District League. “If somebody came to me and said their young fella was playing and he’s under

18, they were allowed in,” he said, referring to the COVID-19 recommendation which states that minors may be accompanied to a match by one parent or guardian. The Premier A is a senior league so the vast majority of each squad participating in the final was made up of adults. If the players aged 17 and under brought one parent each, this should have accounted for three spectators. Eyewitness accounts suggest that there may have been around 120 spectators at the fixture, excluding matchday personnel such as players, management, match officials, first aid, league officials and media. (At this point it should be noted that this journalist was actually playing in the game. While I did not count the number of people and cannot verify the exact attendance, it is fair to say that there were more people there than there should have been, something O’Regan accepts.)

SPORT

18.9.2020 O’Regan said that a training session and another match that were also being held at the facility on the day in question may have contributed to the crowd. He also posited that some spectators may have snuck in via alternative routes. “There was a few there alright but I can’t do anything about what’s passing up and down,” he said. “We don’t have the luxury of having everything walled in like Fitzgerald Stadium or Austin Stack Park. They can come in through Tralee Dynamos’ pitch – now, I don’t know whether they did or not [for this match] – and, unfortunately, on the left-hand-side there’s a walkway and people can come from the middle of Tralee or Caherslee. “Maybe a few people got in that way. There are a few gaps all over the place.” Was anyone asked to leave? “I didn’t ask anyone to leave. I was there more or less on my own. I was concentrating on what was coming through the car park. I didn’t see anyone coming or going from anywhere else. I was literally on my own. I couldn’t leave the gate.”

VENDETTA

Social media posts about the match and the alleged breach of restrictions prompted the article by Rowan and Tighe in The Sunday Times but O’Regan has insisted that the man who was responsible for making the initial comments has a “vendetta” against him. It was claimed that 180 people were at the league final, and that supporters paid an entry fee, in a post he shared on the ‘Supporters of Junior Soccer Players’ Facebook page on Tuesday, September 8. “This man wasn’t even there, from what I can gather. It’s all hearsay with him as far as I’m concerned,” O’Regan said. “It’s a very, very personal vendetta, just because I was a friend of John Delaney’s.” Last year O’Regan emerged as one of Delaney’s fiercest allies as he stuck with the embattled CEO in the face of a litany of serious allegations, which ultimately forced Delaney to resign. Last October, after the controversial administrator had been forced out of the Association for good, O’Regan said that he couldn’t see what Delaney had done wrong. “My association with John Delaney goes back years and years, even before he was ever involved with the FAI. He was a friend of mine. He’s still a friend of mine. I don’t condone everything he did, alright? All I’m saying is what he did for Kerry. That’s what I’m saying, and I can only judge him by what he did for us. “He [the person who made the allegations] is on that drum the whole time. All I do is ignore whatever he puts up online. “Himself and the other gentleman say that I’m being kept in my job by the ‘hurling clubs’ in North Kerry (i.e. soc-

cer clubs that hail from the same part of Kerry as O’Regan, which is a hurling stronghold). “There are eight ‘hurling clubs’ in North Kerry. That’s all that’s there. That small little pocket. “The Kenmares and the Dingles and the Mastergeehas and the Asdees, they’re all the people who vote for me. They’re the people I represent. “When they don’t want me, they’ll tell me.”

INVESTIGATION

Rowan and Tighe revealed on Sunday that the FAI were looking into the alleged breach of restrictions, but on Monday O’Regan told the Killarney Advertiser that “to the best of [his] knowledge” there was no investigation underway. Outgoing Interim Chief Executive Gary Owens had sent him an email, he said, but “he didn’t ask me for an explanation or anything. But I can give them an explanation. There’s no problem there.” However, on Tuesday the FAI again confirmed that they are following up on the KDL’s alleged breach of COVID-19 restrictions. In a brief statement to the Killarney Advertiser, a spokesperson said: “The FAI is investigating attendances at fixtures in Kerry.”

CRITICISM

O’Regan, who has presided over Kerry soccer for the better part of half a century, has faced stern criticism in recent times (not least in this publication), both for supporting John Delaney and for various other matters relating to league governance. In light of the latest controversy, he admits that the media attention and negative comments have taken their toll on him personally. “I’m there at Mounthawk Park 24/7. I was so exhausted yesterday evening (after the Greyhound Bar KO Cup final, which was won by Killarney Celtic), I went home and went to bed at nine o’clock. I didn’t get up ‘til half nine this morning. And I said to myself, it’d be a lot easier for me to just turn the key on the place and leave it closed down. That’s what will happen I’d say shortly because I can’t keep going. “All I’m trying to do is provide an outlet for people to play football. If this is going to be the result, that I’m being personally attacked…” He trails off. Does this mean that he has considered stepping down? “Well, I’ll tell you the honest truth: there are times that I feel like leaving. I’m too long in the game and I wish some other fella would take it over. I’m secretary of the Kerry District League 46 years now. And in all that time, nobody seems to want it. If somebody wants it, I’ve no problem with that. “I’m getting tired of it anyway, Adam. I’ll tell you the truth boy.”

KDL Secretary John O'Regan

“We don’t have the luxury of having everything walled in. They can come in through Tralee Dynamos’ pitch and a walkway... Maybe a few people got in that way."

Rockies work overtime to retain senior club title Last-gasp Quilter goal sets up dramatic victory over Kenmare SENIOR CLUB CHAMPIONSHIP FINAL ___________________________________________________________________________________

Austin Stacks 1-17 | Kenmare Shamrocks 1-14 (AET) FITZGERALD STADIUM Austin Stacks are the Kerry Senior Club Football champions for the second year in a row following a remarkable extra-time victory over Kenmare Shamrocks in Killarney. The Rockies, who were playing with 14 men following the dismissal of Brendan O’Sullivan, looked to be down and out as late as the 64th minute until a high, hopeful ball broke to Seán Quilter and

the young marksman rifled his shot into the roof of the Kenmare net. That equaliser forced overtime and Stacks powered on in the additional periods, eventually emerging victorious with three points to spare. Their substitutes really came to the fore down the stretch as Conor Jordan and Darragh O’Brien chipped in with three points apiece. All told, their bench contributed

eight of the team’s overall tally of 1-17. It was another heartbreaking defeat for Kenmare following their narrow loss to Mid Kerry in the County Championship. They have provided some fantastic entertainment post-lockdown and deserve great credit for making it to the final. Unfortunately, the ball just broke the wrong way for them this time around.

RELEGATION There was no joy for Kilcummin either on Sunday as they crashed out of the Senior Club Championship after a disappointing defeat to Templenoe in the

18.9.2020 relegation playoff. It was another match in which everything went wrong for the 2019 All-Ireland Intermediate champions as an own goal and three red cards did little for their survival prospects. Forwards Noel Duggan and Paul O’Shea tagged on six and five points respectively but, in truth, Kilcummin never really looked like winning as Templenoe exerted their dominance all over the pitch. Killian Spillane (1-7) and Stephen O’Sullivan (1-5) top-scored for the small club from the south as they cruised to a 3-18 to 0-14 win, and they can now look forward to having another crack at senior in 2021.

Kenmare man crowned Fantasy Club champion Kenmare native John Crowley has been declared the winner of the first ever Killarney Advertiser Fantasy Club game after he romped home to victory with a whopping 51 points to spare. Crowley, who is a garda in Killarney, finished head and shoulders above the competition thanks in part to the high-scoring exploits of his clubmates Dan McCarthy, Paul O’Connor and Seán O’Shea. The trio combined for 212 fantasy points over the course of the Kerry Senior Club Championship, which accounted for roughly a third of Crowley’s 653-point total. The Kenmare man walks away with the grand prize: a brand new set of jerseys courtesy of league sponsors Gaelic Plus. Kerry and Killarney Legion goalkeeper Brian Kelly made a late burst to overtake Philip O’Connor (Dr Crokes) in second; Kelly’s final round total of 104 was one of the scores of the round (no one else in the top five registered more than 55). The All-Ireland-winning keeper will be the toast of his Legion teammates as he claims the runner-up prize: 20 pairs of club-crested Gaelic Plus gloves. O’Connor, meanwhile, will receive a Gaelic Plus hoodie, training shirt and leisure shorts. Castleisland’s Graham O’Connor finished just outside the prizes in fourth with Gneeveguilla senior footballer DJ Murphy rounding out the top five.

DREAM 15

A quick glance at the overall Team of the Tournament throws up one interesting stat as only two players from club champions Austin Stacks ended up making the dream 15. This is perhaps explained by the fact

that it was a real team effort by The Rockies. They had a spread of fantasy scorers both at the back and up front, and the manner in which key forwards like Darragh O’Brien, Shane O’Callaghan and Seán Quilter were rotated in and out of the starting line-up meant that they had no standout scorer over the course of the championship. Beaten finalists Kenmare are the best-represented club in the Team of the Year with six players in total, and having the top forward (Seán O’Shea), top midfielder (Kevin O’Sullivan) and top “back” (Dan McCarthy) underscores how impressive a campaign they had. It will be of scant consolation to them after the disappointment of last Sunday’s defeat but at least their friend and clubmate, John Crowley, will be bringing a new set of jerseys back to Fr Breen Park in the not-too-distant future. Speaking at the conclusion of the inaugural Fantasy Club competition, Killarney Advertiser Sports Editor Adam Moynihan congratulated the winners and thanked all of the participants for playing. “Well done to our top three, especially to John who managed to select the perfect team,” he said. “This was our first year trying this out so we’re very grateful to everyone who got involved, not least our sponsor, Shane Cronin of Gaelic Plus. “The feedback has been really positive so we’re looking forward to coming back bigger and better for Fantasy Club 21.”

East Kerry and Mid Kerry advance to county final

Champions too strong for toothless Brendan’s | Dr Crokes exit after enthralling encounter For the second time in 12 months, East Kerry defeated St Brendan’s in the last four of the Kerry Senior Football Championship. And this time they did it without the services of their best player. David Clifford scored nine points the last time these sides met but he was unavailable for selection on Friday after his late bid to have a one-match suspension overturned came to nought. His teammates ploughed on without him and with midfielders Ronan Buckley and Mark Ryan to the fore, and Brendan’s struggling in front of the posts, East Kerry’s victory was never in doubt. It was a torrid night for Brendan’s, who had impressed in the previous rounds with wins over West Kerry and Legion. The divisional side from Tralee and its environs were very wasteful in attack and the fact that they failed to register a single score between the 26th and 54th minute tells its own tale. x

An expertly taken goal by Evan Cronin and some fine kicking by Darragh Roche and Dara Moynihan made the difference on the scoreboard but all in all it was a fairly unremarkable match in Austin Stack Park. It was a case of get the job done and get out of there for Jerry O’Sullivan’s side and they now stand just 60 minutes away from back-to-back county championships.

CLASSIC If Friday’s semi-final was forgettable enough, Saturday’s was anything but. In front of an empty stadium, Dr Crokes and Mid Kerry played out one of the most incredible games you’re ever likely to see, an absolute classic for the ages. In fact, so exciting was the spectacle, and so awe-inspiring were the skills on show, the game has been described by many observers as the greatest match they have ever seen. It was a game that ebbed and flowed, swung one way and then the other. Kieran O’Leary sent the game to extra time

with a wonderful leveller and Crokes looked to have one foot in the final when Gavin White’s goal put them four points ahead in extra time. Mid Kerry never gave up, however, and a goal in the 78th minute by the brilliant Gavan O’Grady made it all square. At this point, the dreaded penalty shootout loomed but there was still time for one final twist as substitute Jack O’Connor ghosted in to kick the winner. It was a cruel way for Crokes to exit the competition but Edmund O’Sullivan and his management team will take some comfort in the heart their players showed on the night, and it must also be remembered that the man responsible for the majority of their scores in this year’s championship, Tony Brosnan, was out with a punctured lung. Honestly though, try as I might, words cannot do this encounter justice. It’s something you just have to see for yourself. Thankfully the match was streamed live and is available to rewatch via 247.tv. It comes highly recommended. Five stars.

PERFORMANCE

OF THE WEEK

Micheál Burns was fantastic for Dr Crokes and the performance of Ronan Buckley for East Kerry versus St Brendan’s also deserves a mention, but it’s hard to look past Mid Kerry maestro GAVAN O’GRADY. The Glenbeigh/Glencar sharpshooter kicked 1-8 (1-5 from play), including the match-saving goal deep into overtime, as the divisional side booked their place in the county final for the first time since 2014.

Over 1,100 sign up to Killarney Advertiser fantasy league The Killarney Advertiser Fantasy Football League in association with Brian James has retained its status as the biggest league of its kind in Kerry. Over 1,100 participants signed up for Gameweek 1 of the popular FPL game, which is an increase of more than 200 on the 2019/20 season. The good news if you missed last week’s deadline is that the league is still open to entries and will remain so for the month of September. If you already picked your team and earned points for Gameweek 1, these points will transfer over to the Killarney Advertiser League. If you’re new to the game and you’re looking to join up for Gameweek 2, you will start at a disadvantage but with 37 weeks to go in the season, there’s plenty of time to catch up. To join, simply visit fantasy.premierleague.com or visit the app, go to ‘join leagues’ and enter the code 7pwwg6. Every month the top-scoring manager will pick up a €50 voucher for Brian James and the overall winner at the end of the season will walk away with a voucher for €250. Brian James have also announced that they will be sponsoring an Easons book hamper for the leader at

WEEK 1

ALL SMILES: Liverpool manager Jürgen Klopp congratulates Mo Salah on his match-winning hat-trick.

Christmas. As usual there are some fantastic team names to be found among this year’s entries: Yes Ndidi (Jack O’Neill), Flying Without Ings (Tadhg Doolan), Giroud Awakening (Daniel Kelly), Finding Timo (Michael Carey), Stuart Dallas Cowboys (Micheál O’Sullivan), Scharface (Shane O’Connor) and 40-year-old Virgil (Eugene Kennedy) are the pick of the bunch this time around.

Your first week can probably be summed up by answering the following question: did you captain Mo Salah or did you not? If you had the Liverpool attacker in your ranks then you more than likely did okay. Salah scored a hat-trick against Leeds, earning him 20 points (or 40 if you had him as captain). Everyone in the top 10 of the Killarney Advertiser League had the Egyptian as their skipper in Gameweek 1. Josh Fleming is the early leader on 117 points with Aleksandar Lasic, Verah Movine, Michael Breen, Tom Moriarty and Brian Collins also managing to break the 100-point barrier on opening weekend. Manchester City play their first match of the season this weekend so it’s no surprise to see that midfield maestro Kevin De Bruyne is the top transfer target, while a dead leg sustained by Chelsea striker Timo Werner (75% chance of playing) has led to the German being shipped out by a large number of managers ahead of his side’s clash against the champions, Liverpool.

I rish Superbike Championship resumes this weekend

John Griffin, a panel beater with Ahern’s Garage in Castleisland, has a new engine fitted to his BMW ahead of this weekend’s resumption of the Dunlop Masters Superbike Championship in Mondello Park in County Kildare. He will be joined on the grid by several Kerry riders including Emmett O’Grady (Honda), Darragh Crean (Suzuki), Robert O’Connell (Yamaha) and Anthony O’Carroll (Kawasaki). The local riders will get a rare chance to measure up against National Road Race champion Derek Sheils, who won the feature race at the only closed road meeting of the year at Cookstown, County Tyrone last Saturday. |

C oyne reaches halfway point in British Championship

Kevin Coyne will continue with his HEL Performance British Junior Supersport campaign with a visit to Oulton Park this

weekend. The young Farranfore racer will have the benefit of an upgraded engine for his maiden visit to the Cheshire track. This weekend’s event marks the halfway point of his first attempt at the series aimed at 13-to-22-year-old racers and Coyne is the first Kerry man to commit to the series. Coyne and his father, Mark, have been punching above their weight in the UK since the sport resumed there in late July. Their races are part of the support package in the prestigious British Superbike Championship and many of their class rivals are run by professional teams and have career aspirations. |

D oherty to sit it out

Killarney racer Frank Doherty has elected to give the Dunlop Masters Superbike Championship a skip as he instead prepares for next season. Doherty finished second in the Superbike Cup Championship last year but is already planning a three-day test in Cartagena in Spain next March ahead of his planned return to the series in 2021.

READY TO RACE: Ahern’s BMW will sponsor motorcycle racer John Griffin who competes this weekend with his BMW S1000RR in the Dunlop Masters Superbike Championship in Mondello Park.John will be hoping for a good run following a retirement in Kirkistown, County Down two weeks ago due to a mechanical issue. The three-day meeting starts with practice today (Friday) followed by two races tomorrow (Saturday) and another two races on Sunday. Each race is contested over 14 laps of the testing County Kildare track. Pictured: John Griffin, Paul Ahern (Ahern’s BMW), Tony Casey (Ahern’s BMW), and Humphrey Kerins (Profix Accident Repairs).

OFFSHORE CHAMPIONSHIPS: The Irish Offshore Rowing Championships are scheduled for Portmagee on Saturday next, September 26. As the number of clubs active in offshore rowing nationally is much smaller compared to river and coastal rowing, it has been possible to arrange limited competition in compliance with the government’s COVID-19 guidelines for sport. A number of rowers from our Masters Mens group will be competing in Portmagee and continue to clock up the miles on the lake in advance. The event was originally scheduled for Donegal in 2020 however the onset of COVID-19 required facilities there to be given over to the HSE. Fortunately, Portmagee RC stepped in to provide an alternative venue. Similar to the recent regatta in Bantry, there will be no spectators allowed and the event will be limited to competitors only. NEW SEASON: We are fast approaching the start of our new rowing year 2020/21. Our plans for the new season will reflect the requirements of the government’s new medium-term plan for living with COVID-19 launched on Tuesday. For those looking to try out rowing as beginners, we will shortly announce details of dates and times for beginner rowing. Watch this space!
