Senator Daly For President

Fianna Fáil Senator Mark Daly, has said he will give “serious consideration” to seeking the party’s nomination for the presidential election. Speaking on RTÉ’s The Week In Politics, Mr Daly said: “I have been humbled by party members who approached me and asked me to consider putting my name forward.” President Michael D Higgins has yet to indicate if he will seek a second term, and Fianna Fáil has yet to decide if it will field a candidate in the event of a contest. However, Senator Daly said: “I was one of those who believed the party should have run a candidate in the last election. I believe the party should run a candidate in this presidential election.” He also adding: “When the party makes its decision, I will give it serious consideration.”

What Next? Naming Raindrops? Chanel 4 News Weatherman, Liam Dutton has called into question Met Eireann’s criteria for naming storms. He wrote: “#StormFionn that has been named by @MetEireann shouldn’t have been named. It needs no more than a standard weather warning. It’s not even a low pressure with a storm centre, just a squeeze in the isobars. What next? Naming raindrops? It’s ridiculous!” Our own weatherlady, Evelyn Cusack

has responded to Dutton’s criticism. Adding she can “understand his point. I think what’s he referring to is really is that they were storm winds but there was no circulation. Traditionally a storm has circulation, like a vortex, a whirling mass - like a hurricane”. “We issued a storm warning because there were storm gradient winds - but there was no circulation with it.” Ireland’s Met Eireann and the UK’s Met Office have a joint storm naming system. They revealed their Winter

Not only is the Killarney Hotel Group investing in a new staff facility at The Europe Hotel & Resort but is also undergoing an extensive renovation project of the restaurant, bar, reception, public areas, car park & an extensive garden enhancement of The Dunloe Hotel & Gardens, which is scheduled to re-open on 23rd April 2018. Storm names for 2017-2018 in September. Dutton questioned how Ireland and the UK can work together on naming storms when they use “different criteria” to assess weather systems. “This is the problem with the storm naming system,” he wrote. Saoirse Coffey and Katelyn Nolan from the Killarney Scorchers Cheerleading Club with their team manager, Dee Nolan.

We were absolutely delighted to welcome talented cheerleaders Saoirse Coffey and Katelyn Nolan from Killarney Scorchers Cheerleading Club to The Chatroom this week. The girls, who were joined by team manager Dee Nolan, gave Kieran a lesson on cheerleading terms like ‘tumbling’ and ‘stunting’ and also chatted about their recent massive success in the European Championships. They also discussed their invita-

tion to compete in the upcoming World Championships in Florida next May. Saoirse tells us how much training the Scorchers put in to reach the level that they’re now competing at, while Dee explains how she got the momager title and also tells us about the origins of the Scorchers. Katelyn also explains the elusive ‘hit zero’ and how hard it is to achieve one. Fundraising efforts are being put in place to help

the team travel to Florida and compete on the world stage so if you see any fundraisers for the Scorchers, please give generously! We wish them every bit of success as they become the first ever Irish Cheerleading Club to compete in the World Championships. Check out this highly entertaining interview on our Facebook page this evening at 9pm and on our website killarneyadvertiser.ie.

ST BRENDAN’S COLLEGE picked up another piece of silverware last week when intrepid scientists James Knoblauch, Harry Knoblauch and Oran O’Donoghue won the Best Group award at the 54th BT Young Science and Technology Exhibition. The 16 year olds, who are all currently in 5th year, also received the RTÉ Best Social & Behavioural Science Project Award. This accolade comes with a day shadowing a well-known RTÉ DJ. The Sem students’ project, titled “An investigation into conformity and how minorities influence it”, demonstrat-

ed how one person can influence the behaviour of others using a unique approach to studying group dynamics. In two controlled psychology experiments, they focussed on the influence of an individual within a group setting. The boys began work for their project in November when they found out they had qualified to exhibit their project at the BT Young Scientist and Technology competition in the RDS in January 2018. In the course of their work for the project they designed their own social psychology experiment which they ran

Four More Years For Kerry-Dublin Air Route THE MINISTER for Transport, Tourism and Sport, Shane Ross, announced today that Stobart Air will operate the Public Service Obligation (PSO) air route linking Kerry airport with Dublin for the next four years. The current PSO contract for these two routes expires at the end of this month and the new contract will operate from February 1, 2018 until January 31, 2022. Speaking following the announcement, Minister of State at the Department of Transport, Tourism and Sport, Brendan Griffin, welcomed the news and said that the route was a “vital economic link for all industries, particularly

tourism, in the region”. “This is further evidence of the Government’s key priority in investing in rural Ireland,” he continued, “and providing equal opportunity for economic growth across all parts of the country.” Denis Cregan, Chairman of Kerry Airport, hailed the new contract as “positive”. “Passengers booking flights with Aer Lingus Regional (via the aerlingus. com booking site) between Kerry and Dublin will ultimately benefit from Stobart Air’s familiarity of the route while the continuation of the PSO will be a major positive step for both Kerry Airport and business and tourist interests of the county,” he said.

on over 100 students from St Brendan’s College and the nearby St Brigid’s secondary school. Their broad sample size provided their results and they received an average rate of conformity of 40% from that research. To further legitimise their findings, the boys took the historically famous Asch Experiment and changed it so it was a minority influence experiment. They then used 45 students from their school as participants and recorded an average rate of conformity at 35%. Given the proximity of the results (35% to 40%) the boys concluded that across

multiple groups there is a fairly consistent rate of conformity at approximately 37.5%. The boys had a great week representing their school at the exhibition and were interview by Will Goodbody of RTÉ News, Kevin O’Sullivan of the Irish Times and by the BT Young Scientist Media team. The boys were also visited by Kerry TD Michael Healy-Rae, South Ireland MEP Séan Kelly and RTÉ weather lady Evelyn Cusack. “It was a really enjoyable experience,” said James Knoblauch, “and all of us on the team had a great time in Dublin”.

Views On The News

Anne Lucey gives her take on happenings in Killarney, Kerry and beyond in her monthly column

Back To The Future CONDOMS were on the agenda of the Dail in 1984, shortly before the Kerry babies case exploded onto the national stage. The debate on whether allowing the amendment to the Family Planning Act so condoms could be sold in chemist shops reached Shakespearian proportions At the time, contraception was allowed to married couples, and even this was thanks to the liberal minded Charles Haughey. But it was confined to heterosexual couples with a marriage certificate to assuage the conscience of conservative Ireland in relation to sexual matters. But what lay behind the whole thing, and this has not been examined properly, was the divisive l abortion referendum of 1983, a Trojan horse to protect the life of the unborn, but which really was and certainly became a free for all attack on women’s sexuality and rights over their own bodies. The peculiar holy Mary attitude to sex in this country has nothing to do with Catholicism – most people now realise. It has everything to do with repression and

control of the fairer sex for male security and comfort. In 1983, men did not have it all their own way they discovered to their shock. Women, many of whom had travelled and were educated were starting to complain, in fact a vocal minority made their opposition to the abortion referendum heard. I was one among a small grouping of men and women in this town who campaigned against the 1983 proposal. It wasn’t easy. The male establishment – and their female handmaidens - were outraged by the attitude of the minority and it was against this background, poisonous and vindictive, that Joanne Hayes was pilloried by the State. It is doubtful if the Salem witch trials could have produced as much venom against women – and it did so against the 1983 background. Granard happened. The Kerry babies happened. As she said herself, the attack by judge, gardai, lawyers and the establishment in the run up and including the tribunal into the handling of her case was an attack on all women. So, 1984 seems a long way away, does it?

There is a certain symmetry is there not in the re-emergence of the Kerry babies case at a time when a second abortion referendum is on the table? Some people have wondered about the timing. But perhaps now the heavy State shoe is on the other foot and is without the steel toecaps. The attempt to hold back the tide is of course being made again. And the assumption as in 1983 is that women are

not to be trusted. Allow them abortion and they will go to hell altogether, become completely irrational and murder all around them. If the mostly male politicians who are opposed to repealing the 8th and talking about protecting the unborn, and they really wanted to do protect vulnerable children, then they could buy or build, or even hand over a few of their houses to homeless families, may I respectfully suggest.

JPC & Street Furniture Car Parking In Killarney

The council in Kerry are being asked to look at the whole street furniture thing in the context of the town’s bylaws on drinking. On the one hand drinking in public is outlawed, but on the other hand street furniture allows people to sit outside bars and the practice of drinking outside bars where there are seats has emerged and it is not being universally welcomed. The issue was raised at meeting of the Joint Policing Committee (JPC) in Killorglin where the council is being urged to consider Galway type hoardings to screen off early morning and day time drinking. Drinking on the street in Killarney is outlawed under the former town council bylaws, a meeting of the county’s JPC

Shop Street, Galway.

heard. Gardai adopted a “sensible approach” and turned a blind eye to it on special occasions, like the Munster Finals to help bars cope with crowds Michael Culloty, accountant, is the former chairman of Killarney’s successful Purple flag bid which awards well-managed and safe urban environments. He told how “on-street drinking” had become an issue in Killarney and asked if the town’s bylaws allowed this. He had received a photograph of a person sitting on the street drinking at 12 minutes past 12 in the middle of the day and families were concerned about the day time drinking even during the winter. “Perhaps hoarding should be considered,” Mr Culloty suggested.

Yesterday limited car spaces forced motorists to park on the double yellow while the bus park was virtually empty.

It sometimes takes a pair and fresh and alert Tralee eyes to see a solution to car park problems in Killarney. Even on grey November days, the car park at Lewis Road where the buses are meant to be, is in effect half empty. The section for the coach buses is cordoned off and no revenue is being earned. Meanwhile time pressed solicitors like Patrick Daly, the Tralee councillor, can find nowhere to park on court days in November in Killarney. “There is plenty of parking in Tralee,” the solicitor said, rubbing salt into Kil-

larney wounds. Mr Daly also raised the matter of loss of revenue. Apparently, the coaches pay nothing to the council for the parking in Lewis Road – but the rationale of the old town council was the car spaces freed up on the East Avenue Road would compensate. Still, would it be beyond reasonable to seek that the coach part be opened up to cars at least for the winter? Even during the summer, between hours of 10 and 5 pm that section is empty also as al the buses have departed for the Ring of Kerry.

Tributes Pour In For Tragic Dolores

Dolores O’Riordan of The Cranberries pictured on stage at Fitzgerald Stadium, Killarney. Pic: Eamonn Keogh

Music fans the world over were united in grief this past week as news broke of the tragic death of legendary Irish singer Dolores O’Riordan. She was just 46. O’Riordan and her Limerick quartet, the Cranberries, were hugely successful in the 1990s with singles like Linger and Zombie becoming smash hits worldwide. The band’s debut album, Everybody Else is Doing It, So Why Can’t We?, topped the UK charts and the next three were all top 10 records. The group eventually split in 2003 and O’Riordan released a couple of solo albums in 2007 and 2009. Born in Ballybricken, a small townland 11 miles east of Limerick City, O’Riordan was the youngest of nine children. Her mother, Eileen, was a school caterer

while her father, Terence, was a farm labourer until an accident left him unable to work. She attended Laurel Hill secondary school in Limerick and although she spent a lot of time with her brothers who loved heavy metal, she also played the organ in church. These musical influences gave her a desire to join a band and at 18, she teamed up with a local group called Cranberry Saw Us. Within a few short years, they had conquered the music world as the Cranberries. O’Riordan was quite open throughout her career about her battles with depression and anorexia. A suicide attempt in 2013 led to a diagnosis of bipolar disorder and when she was arrested for erratic behaviour on a transatlantic flight a year later, it was attributed to a hypomanic episode. She said as recently as 2017 that she hoped to make at least one more album and to go on tour again. She is survived by her children, Taylor, Molly and Dakota.

Musician’s Remember Dolores ‘The day the music died’. Sadly for a generation that grew up in the 90’s the music has died with the passing of Dolores O’Riordan. But she was more than the lead singer of the Cranberries. She was the voice of a generation and a pioneer in Irish rock music proving that a woman could front a rock band. She was a hugely talented song writer. Unlike most bands the Cranberries had songs like Linger ready when they were signed. They became a world wide success, yet Dolores never changed her singing voice. She was always authentic with her Limerick accent. She had many connections to Kerry, many will fondly remember the band when they headlined at Fitzgerald Stadium. I say in my show that we don’t own the music, no more than the air or the water, it’s what we do with it in our time that counts. Dolores O’Riordan was a unique talent who has left a great musical legacy. She will be sadly missed by music fans all over the world but even more sadly missed by her family. The world is a little less musical following her death at much too young an age this week. Liam O’Connor Musician

I remember the first time I came across the Cranberries as if it was yesterday, I was a music obsessed 11 year old watching MTV’s Most Wanted and a band from limerick were on the screen playing an acoustic version of their new single. Linger just knocked me out! Fast forward a good few years to the Killarney Summerfest double header of Counting Crows & The Cranberries and the amazing Dolores O’Riordan bounding around the stage and lashing out the hits; Dreams, Linger, Zombie, Ode to my Family to name a few. What a stage presence, what a voice, what a lady, she will be missed. Kieran Healy – Musician ‘ Linger ‘ lyrics and music were simple and to the delicate point. That song comes across to me as one of those perfect pieces that wrote itself, in the pop genre that’s not an easy thing to do. She was an Irish woman who was heard all around the world, everyone respects that. I wish she wasn’t gone. Karrie – Singer/Songwriter

The cranberries were part of the soundtrack of anyone growing up in the 1990’s. As a rock band, they had a unique and iconic sound which was driven by Dolores’s powerful, emotional and truly Irish voice. At a time when so many singers adopt other voices, she embraced her accent and where she was from and it perhaps became one of the reasons for their huge international success. I think this is seen nowhere better than in the plaintive and dynamic outro for dreams or in the poignant “When You’re Gone.” It is a huge loss for her Family first and foremost but also to her band mates and the Irish music community. Brendan O’Connor – Producer - Little Dylan Studios Ireland has produced a colourful collection of inspirational artists but in my opinion none more so than the vocal tones of the cranberries lead singer. I had the pleasure of encountering Dolores o’Riordan during my time on the Voice of Ireland in 2012. It is always heart breaking when a talent comes to an end. 2017 saw the loss of Glen Campbell, John Hurt and Roger Moore but the new year has brought devastation on

the Irish music scene at the loss of Ms. O’Riordan. They say heavens choir is where the purest of music is created, God has just cast a new lead vocal. Rip Dolores. Your memory will linger. Jack Patrick Healy – Killarney’s Liberace I was shocked to hear of the passing of such an iconic Irish artist who was an influence over many Irish artists on the music scene today. She influenced the road and success ahead for so many of them in their careers and made IRELAND and Irish bands known internationally. A strong female role model with a fantastic voice and an incredible band. We All Use The Roads

The road network is for us all to use equally. However, this network is under growing pressure from increased traffic volumes. This is very much brought to the fore in recent years with the explosion of cyclists taking to the roads. It is fantastic to see so many people enjoying this healthy mode of transport. However, the increased numbers on our roads makes cyclists extremely vulnerable. Regardless of entitlement or rules of the road, the simple laws of physics highlight the cyclist’s vulnerabilities. Every year there are several cycling fatalities on Irish roads and countless collisions involving cyclists. In recent years the RSA has supported sweeping laws to protect the cyclist. However, in my opinion the cyclist needs to be educated to their vulnerabilities. All the laws in the world won’t protect a cyclist in the event of an accident. As a member of the Killarney Cycling Club in the early eighties when cyclists were not a common sight on our roads. Sean Kelly and Stephen Roche success were just introduced Ireland to this new foreign sport. As a young cyclist in the early eighties, we were not aware we were protected by any laws or rules and didn’t feel we had any entitlements to the road network. Our mentors instilled a strong sense of self-preservation in each of us newbies. It was simple. Give way to oncoming traffic. Our first lesson was in the laws of physics – a 1.5 tonne car will hurt you, so putting it politely: ‘Get the hell out of the way’. A crude but effect lesson. And that was from experienced cyclists.

During my period of membership of the Killarney Cycling club I can’t recall any incident with a motorist. I apply that same sense of self-preservation today when I venture out on my bike. Last Saturday morning I was caught in a line of traffic dehind a group of cyclists. From my vantage point I saw the risks the cyclists were taking. On passing them shortly after I bestowed my little wisdom to the group, ‘single file lads’ not an unreasonable request given what I saw. However, the reason was less so, ‘f**k Off’. Not accepting that as a suitable response to my concerns, I seized the opportunity later to get clarification from one of the group. I could have taken him to task over his initial response but there was a bigger issue to address – his groups safety. Our views on safety could not differ more, mine, ‘keep out of harm’s way’, against his, ‘create an obstruction forcing traffic to wait until it is safe to pass’. My question is, can you quantify someone else’s judgement on your safety when that judgement is made from inside an airconditioned, airbag infested cocoon. I though not… I’m my opinion this exposed the group to an unknown that they could not see behind them. Thus, their assessment of the situation was greatly reduced. From my experience, removing yourself from risk far outweighs putting your safety in someone else’s hands. Removing any build-up of traffic will reduce the risk of frustrated motorists. As a cyclist, you can’t quantify what is behind, you can’t see it. So, the question is – again, why put your safety in someone else’s hands?

‘The core rationale for issuing Weather Warnings is to protect the lives and livelihoods of all of the nation’s citizens, and to mitigate damage to property and disturbance to economic activity at times of severe weather’. At ‘times of severe weather’. What exactly constitutes severe weather these days…we live on an island on the edge of the Atlantic Ocean, these events are the norm or were always thought of as such, that is before the dreaded colour coded warnings that are flashing across our screens with increasing frequency…. WARNING CODE ORANGE! YOU COULD DIE IF YOU OUT! Yet again Met Eireann have issued a multitude of weather warnings in quick succession. Promising utter chaos and risk to life….’seriously’. First we had Elanor the ‘little minx’ and to be followed by Fionn ‘an awful scut’. Georgian is next. In a lot of cases if you didn’t read the Advertiser or listen to the radio, these so call orange and yellow categorised storms would come and go relatively unnoticed. We would all still go to work, school, town and get the ‘messages’ as normal. Instead of these dire warnings broadcast over the airwaves we would simply say ‘Tis a bit lively out there’ or ‘Tis raining cats and dogs’. RTE once our only source of information, weather forecasters would tell in a calm voice without any theatrics that there might be heavy rain or there would be high winds on the way. I never remember Don Coburn telling me I could get sever frostbite if I go to the shops. Today we have this big brother nanny state warning us almost daily into a state of perpetual fear. Lord I know the Irish love to talk about the weather but this is go-

ing too far. What did we do a decade ago? Before ‘the book of faces’, posts telling us we could all be washed away. Comments such as ‘oh dear be careful out there’ have turned into cynicism and sarcasm ‘oh no… code orange! Not again haha! The end is nigh’. The boy that cried wolf comes to mind. During Storm Desmond, Teresa Mannion took the biscuit when she made a mockery of our forecasting profession. I lost a bit of respect that day for this time honoured profession. We did heed these warnings once and probably would again today. However as they become more and more frequent and little or nothing happens, we generally as a county are starting to take these harbingers of doom with their dreaded warnings ‘with a pinch of salt’. Yes the odd muppet always will climb Carrantuohill or go kitesurfing in Brandon Bay, putting only the rescue crews in danger and not the general public but that’s just lack of cop on!. Mostly these ‘end of days’ predictions leave us with nothing more than a dripping raincoat or an inside out umbrella, a few leaves on the roads and photos of facebook of Torc waterfall in glorious full flood. The day the big storm comes, that will cause sever damage... will we be ready, will we heed the warnings or suffering from CODE ORANGE fatigue will we pay the price. A lot of people today are well capable of judging the weather, its built into our Irish DNA. It’s called looking out the window and using a bit of common sense. We don’t need to be told when to venture out, when to drive… just report the weather and let the nation use their ‘cop on’.

Kerry Primary Schools Growing Their Own GIY and innocent drinks team up to launch the seventh annual food growing initiative, a project that will enable 43,000 primary school children across the country to learn how to grow their own food this spring with ‘The innocent Big Grow’. Primary schools can apply now for a free Big Grow pack to be delivered to their school via innocentbiggrow.com. This year the pupils will learn how to grow peas, cress and spinach. Each Big Grow pack includes enough soil, growing pots, seeds for a class of thirty along with an expert food growing kit devised by GIY plus details on how to cook and eat the produce that each child has grown. Studies show that children who grow their own food are more likely to eat fruits and vegetables and show higher levels of knowledge about nutrition. The innocent Big Grow will encourage a knowledge of where food comes from, teaching children through a fun, free, learning experience just how easy it is to grow their own greens and enjoy the

taste of their own food. It will also drive a series of learning as once schools are registered they can keep a growing blog online and for every school that does, they receive a Big Grow certificate but the most engaged

or the ‘Best’ Big Grow school will win a trip to Bloom for their class, a trip to Dublin Zoo and €500 worth of gardening equipment for the school; the winning school will be presented with their prizes at Bloom 2018 and wwo runners up prizes of a €300 and a €200 GIY voucher are also up for grabs. Panto Brings Pinocchio To Life The Killorglin Panto Group’s 55th Pantomime has been announced, and to satisfy all the Nosey Nelly’s who have been trying figure it out, this year’s Panto is... Pinocchio! Oh, yes it is! The much-loved story of the boy-puppet Pinocchio has been treated to the usual ‘unusual’ twists that audiences have come to associate with Killorglin Panto, as the action spans from Dame Gepetto’s Toyshop to the Village School, journeying further to encounter hilarious characters and activities at the Circus, and eventually climaxing in the belly of The Whale. Musical Director, Martin Hurley, has prepared over 20 musical items catering for all musical tastes, while chore-

ographer, ‘Mrs Jackie’, has excelled in bringing the whole chorus alive with scintillatingly syncopated swivels and swerves. The story is introduced to the audience by The Blue Fairy, played by Maura Moriarty O’Neill, while Pinocchio is brought to life by Shona Murphy, who delivers the lead role with boyish charm. Shona is accompanied by her Babe partner from last year, Renee Kavanagh, who brings her usual devilment to her personification of Pinocchio’s conscience, Jiminy Cricket.Playing opposite Dame Gepetto (Declan Mangan) is superb actor, Steven Mills. Mills presents the greedy Mayor Macaroni, assisted by his two

Panto

foolish lackeys, Hi (Kevin Moriarty) and Lo (Colm Clifford). Extra fairy dust has been sprinkled on the Panto stage this year and five toy dolls come to life; Superman (Aidan Clifford), Wonder Woman (Bronagh Murphy), Jack and Jill (Sean Joy and Lisa Corkery), and the baddie, Dark Joker (Chris Brennan). And that’s not all, Mervin Clifford expertly portrays the Circus Ringmaster and John McGeever even manages to put in an appearance as Manuel from Rio. Stage Manager David Pigott is being kept busy with his handling of the many colourful sets created by David and Dave Mills, and resident lighting guru, Eamonn Looney, will once again be on hand to enhance the atmosphere and transport the audience deeper into the plot. The Panto begins in the CYMS, Killorglin, with matinees on Saturday, January 20 and Sunday, January 21. Night-time shows will be performed from the following Wednesday until the final Matinees on Sunday, January 28. The Panto will come to a triumphant end at the gala finish in the INEC Killarney at 5pm on Saturday February 4. To secure your tickets for the ever popular Killorglin Panto, contact the booking office on 066 9790961. For pictures and live updates, follow the conversation online @KillorglinPantomimeGroup.

Kerry ETB Leads The Way With New National Commis Chef Apprenticeship Programme Programme

Kerry Education and Training Board is delighted to announce the rollout of the National Commis Chef Apprenticeship Programme in Kerry this February 2018. The Programme will provide aspiring chefs across Ireland with a two–year formal education and training programme that will kick-start their careers as professional chefs. The programme, the only one of its kind in the country, is supported by the Irish Hotels Federation (IHF), the Restaurants Association of Ireland (RAI), the Irish Hospitality Institute (IHI), Euro-toques Ireland, Catering Management Association of Ireland (CMAI), Fáilte Ireland, SOLAS, Education and Training Boards (ETBs) and Institutes of Technology (IOTs). Kerry ETB has being appointed Coordinating Provider for the

new National Commis Chef Apprenticeship Programme in Ireland. Speaking at the Programme launch in Dublin Owen O Donnell, Director of Further Education and Training for Kerry ETB stated; “Kerry ETB is delighted to be leading the new National Apprenticeship for Commis Chefs. Education and Training Boards involved in delivering the educational aspects of the programme. A Weekly Round-Up Of News + Views From Kerry And Around Politics

DUP Leader:

‘We Must Battle For Our Mutual Interests’ BREXIT is not about cutting off Northern Ireland from its nearest neighbours, according to the DUP leader Arlene Foster. Speaking at the inaugural Killarney Economic Conference in The Brehon Hotel, Mrs Foster said it was in Northern Ireland’s best interests to see the Republic of Ireland prosper. “While we will always battle for our own national interests, we must also battle for our mutual interests,” she said. Mrs Foster also said that there are more things to unite than divide Britain and Ireland in phase two of discussions on the UK’s split from Europe, while also suggesting that leaders across the island of Ireland should work together for the benefit of everyone. “The UK exiting the European Union ought not to become a barrier to continued co-operation on issues of ongoing mutual interest,” she said. “It especially shouldn’t become a barrier when the infrastructure - in the guise of the British-Irish Council - already exists that can allow us to continue to work together as closely as ever on issues of shared interest.” “I value the relationships we have developed too much to do anything that

would jeopardise them.” The DUP chief said she would raise the prospect of enhancing Anglo-Irish relations, under the auspices of the British-Irish Council, when she meets with Foreign Affairs Minister Simon Coveney. Also speaking at the conference in Killarney, Fianna Fáil leader Micheál Martin said that he detected from Arlene Foster a clear commitment to the restoration of the Assembly and Executive and a belief that it’s the right thing for Northern Ireland. “In terms of Brexit... I think the focus needs to be on very practical and constructive engagement to mitigate the damage that, in my opinion, Brexit will do to trade and jobs between north and south and east and west,” he said.

Trump Corner

There’s No Such Thing As Bad Publicity Namibia is really capitalizing on president Donald Trump’s diplomatic gaffes. Trump allegedly referred to African countries as “shithole countries” along with Haiti and El Salvador in a White House meeting to discuss the US immigration reform last week. Where Namibia’s neighbors took a stronger diplomatic stance, Namibia saw a marketing opportunity. Namibian tourism agents released a video advertising their shithole country to potential tourists, specifically visitors from the US. Narrated by a Trump imitator, the short video advertises all the coun-

Never fails to entertain

try’s “shithole” features. It may be mildly crass, but Namibia really drives home the point as “one of the best shithole countries out there.” “We just jumped on the opportunity,” Digu Noabeb, CEO of the Namibian tourism board. “As a country we’ve been trying to enter the US market, and with our budget it’s been a daunting task.” While the rest of the world tries to make sense of a president so unprecedented, Namibia’s strategy seems to be there’s no such thing as bad publicity.

Work Starts On New Killarney Graveyard Work has finally commenced on the new Killarney graveyard. Kerry County Council have confirmed that preliminary works began on the site, which is located in Knockeendubh out the Tralee Road, earlier this week.

Initial preparation and clearance of the site is currently being carried out. The Killarney Advertiser campaigned heavily for the development of a new graveyard in the Killarney area and, as such, are delighted with the news that this project is going ahead.

€900K For Family Of Tragic Hit-And-Run Victim The family of a Gneeveguilla man who was tragically killed while training for the Ring of Kerry charity cycle have been awarded €900,000. 42-year-old Paud O’Leary, a father of four, was out on an early morning cycle when he was struck by a passing vehicle and fatally injured at Scrahan Fada, not far from his home, on July 1, 2012. In April 2015, a six-and-a-halfyear prison sentence was imposed on Shane Fitzgerald of Newmarket, Cork for dangerous driving causing the death of Mr O’Leary. After the offence, Fitzgerald fled the scene and the day after left for the UK and sub-

sequently Australia. He was arrested in February 2014 having been spotted by an Irish citizen at Heathrow Airport. He was on his way back to Australia. CCTV footage showing Fitzgerald drinking heavily before getting into his vehicle on the night in question was shown during his trial. Mr Justice Michael Hanna approved the settlement offer and while he said that what happened was an “appalling tragedy”, he encouraged the bereaved family to remember the happy times. “The very best of luck to you,” the judge said to Mrs O’Leary and her daughter, Shannon. “I wish you a very happy new year.”

A Drone Rescues Swimmers Lifeguards used a drone to rescue two teenagers from rough seas off the northern coast of New South Wales in Australia yesterday. The lifeguards happened to be piloting the new technology when they received a distress signal and deployed the drone to search for the struggling swimmers. Footage re-

layed from the drone camera caught two people in distress. The drone releasing a flotation device, which the two teenagers swam toward and clung onto as they were pounded by waves. It was reported that the whole process only took 70 seconds; compared to the six minutes it usually would take a lifeguard to rescue the swimmers.

Minister Ross Accidentally Votes Against Own Bill

There was embarrassment for the Minister for Transport, Shane Ross, in the Dáil yesterday as he accidentally voted against his own drink-driving bill. The bill, which passed comfortably by a majority of 85 votes to eight, will see an automatic disqualification for drivers on their first offence of driving while over the permitted 50mg of al-

cohol per 100ml of blood. The law currently states that a person with a full license who is caught driving with an alcohol level between 50mg and 80mg is liable to get three penalty points on their license and a €200 fine. It is understood that Ross quickly highlighted his error and will be allowed to officially change his vote.

Bardot Slams “Hypocritical & Ridiculous” #MeToo Movement 60s screen siren Brigitte Barot has attacked the #MeToo movement, calling it “hypocritical and ridiculous” and suggesting that some of the allegations are from women courting publicity. In an interview with Paris Match magazine, the French actress said that “lots of actresses try to play the tease with producers to get a role. And then, so we will talk

about them, they say they were harassed”. She added that the “vast majority are being hypocritical and ridiculous.” Speaking about her own experiences, Bardot claims she “was never the victim of sexual harassment”. “And,” she continued, “I found it charming when men told me that I was beautiful, or I had a nice little backside.”

The Blue Monday Myth Debunked Blue Monday falls on the third Monday of every January (i.e. this past Monday) and is, apparently, the most depressing day of the entire year. The date was first revealed in 2005 by a man named Cliff Arnall who was a tutor at a further education centre attached to Cardiff University. The formula Arnall used to calculate the exact date took a number of factors into account. The weather, level of debt, time since Christmas, time since failing our New Year’s resolutions, low motivational levels and feeling of a need to take action were all considered, and Arnall concluded that the third Monday of every year was, scientifically speaking, the most miserable day in the calendar.

Developments Coming Thick & Fast In Re-Opened Kerry Babies Case

On closer inspection, however, Arnall’s “theory” doesn’t stand up to scrutiny. The claim was quickly dismissed as a shaky one because the cited factors were clearly vague and nearly impossible to quantify. More tellingly, his research was first publicised as part of a press release from holiday company Sky Travel. It later emerged that the entire idea was concocted by their PR company in the hope of drumming up additional sales during the traditionally slow January period. In the years since Blue Monday was first conceived, many mental health professionals have criticised Arnall and co. for minimising the issue of clinical depression, which they say cannot be cured simply by booking a holiday.

THE CASE has been cold for more than 33 years but the re-opened Kerry Babies investigation already appears to be gathering significant momentum. The disclosure on Tuesday that DNA evidence has conclusively proved that Joanne Hayes was not the mother of Baby John has set in motion a sequence of events that have dominated the news all week. Gardaí apologised to Ms Hayes for their handling of the case against her in 1984, during which the Abbeydorney woman claims she was coerced into confessing to the gruesome murder of a five-day old infant. Speaking on behalf of the Gardaí, Superintendent Flor Murphy said it was a “matter of significant regret for An Garda Síochána that it has taken such a long time for it to be confirmed that Ms Hayes is not the mother of Baby John.” “On behalf of An Garda Síochána, I would like to sincerely apologise to Ms Hayes for that, as well as the awful stress and pain she has been put through as a result of the original investigation into this matter, which fell well short of the required standards.” The case was officially re-opened with Supt. Murphy reassuring the public that “this will be a thorough and professional investigation.” On Wednesday, Taoiseach Leo Varadkar apologised on behalf of the State, saying Ms Hayes was “badly treated by our State

and by our society in a way that so many other women have been in the past and that needs to change”. “I can’t offer compensation here now,” Varadkar continued, “but it’s something that I think we can discuss with her representatives in the period ahead.” Later that day, the Minister for Justice, Charlie Flanagan, said that compensation should be dealt with in a manner that was “private… and speedy”. Progress continued at a steady rate on Thursday as Gardaí announced that they are now seeking DNA samples from people in the Iveragh Peninsula in the hope of finding an elusive missing link. Detectives have also appealed directly to Baby John’s mother to come forward. Although Gardaí have confirmed that they are not following a definite line of inquiry, a number of people have already contacted the incident room since the new investigation was launched on Tuesday.

The relevant District Court Offices provide a service and it is designed to handle Consumer Claims and Business Claims in a cost effective and timely manner. 19.01.18 Netflix - My Next Guest Needs No Introduction with David Letterman

The Cranberries: The Best Of 1992 - 2002 Following the unexpected death this week of The Cranberries singer Dolores O’Riordan now is as good a time as any to listen back to some of their classic tracks on Stars: The Best Of 1992 – 2002. Compiling all their greatest hits, Linger, Zombie, Dreams, Ode to my fami-

ly just to name a few, sit back and re-discover why this Limerick based band shot to international fame and were considered to be right up there next to U2 as Ireland’s biggest band.

On The Box

When David Letterman left the Late Show in 2015, it felt like a generational changing of the guard. After over three decades as a late-night host, the comedian was stepping away, letting Stephen Colbert reinvent the show while Letterman enjoyed the free time to do, well, nothing — other than grow a really serious beard. So when Netflix announced last year that he would be coming out of retirement to host a talk show, it raised a couple of questions. What could Letterman do outside the limitations of network television that he hadn’t already done, and would a David Letterman series still seem relevant given that the late-night world has moved on? The first episode of the show, My Next Guest Needs No Introduction With David Letterman, is out now, featuring President Barack Obama. As it turns out, there’s quite a few things that Letterman is able to do outside the bounds of network TV. And when compared to the quick-turnaround, snarky tone that permeates so much late-night material

today, Letterman’s honesty and degree of emotional introspection don’t just make him still relevant; they make him absolutely essential.

Significant improvements have been made within the club and the most recent project undertaken saw the continuation of a natural stone wall around the 1st green complex, and a re-design of the 1st green on Killeen. Beaufort’s Unique ‘Points For Golf’ Membership Option Beaufort Golf Club is a beautiful 18 hole parkland golf course set at the foot of the MacGillicuddy Reeks, just outside Beaufort Village. Manager Helen Clifford and her staff take great pride in providing a top class service with a local feel. Helen runs and maintains the Golf Course with her husband Tadgh, who keeps the course in incredible shape all year round. Beaufort has been reviewed on Trip Advisor as the ‘hidden gem’ in Kerry Golf, such is the beauty that surrounds it and the challenge and condition of the course. Beaufort offers a unique membership option in its ‘Points for Golf’. As a member you can pay €250 and receive

points. Every time you play you will have points deducted from your total points balance. This type of membership allows you to get an official handicap and even use your points to bring a guest, compete in Club Competitions and have your official GUI/ILGU Handicap maintained by Beaufort Golf Club. This option suits people who love to play golf but don’t have the time to enjoy it as much as they would like or for people who might like to start playing golf and don’t want to pay full fees until they are sure that they are taking it up full time. You can top up your points at any time during the year should you use them quicker than you anticipated.

Playing Golf In The Cold: 5 Smart Tips There are some days when we just don’t feel like braving the elements but golfing in the cold doesn’t have to be a chore. Follow our advice and you’ll keep nice and toasty while enjoying a pleasant round of your favourite game in the process. 1. Come prepared There’s nothing worse than getting out on the course and realising you’ve forgotten your hat, or gloves, or jacket. Before teeing off, make sure you have everything you need to get through your

round in comfort. With our Irish weather, you have to be prepared for every possible eventuality. 2. Manage your expectations When the temperatures dip, no matter how good you are or how well you’ve been playing, you probably won’t be breaking any course records. As long as you accept that beforehand, the round will be far more enjoyable. 3. Use a softer ball A soft-covered ball won’t travel as far but it will give you a little extra feel which is crucial in cold condi-

tions. 4. Take an extra club In general, your shots aren’t going to travel the normal distance when it’s very cold. If you hit 9 iron from 120 yards, opt for an 8 iron instead. 5. Leave the cart at the clubhouse It might seem a bit counterintuitive as you will need to stay outside for longer, but walking around will get your blood flowing and keep you (relatively) warm throughout your round. It’s good exercise too!

Dooks Dancing Into New Era For The Club In March of 2016, the ladies section at Dooks Golf Club, Co. Kerry boasted just 10 ladies under the age of sixty and, as active members were diminishing at an alarming rate, were struggling to field inter-club teams. This is according to Kay Woods who, in her Lady Captain’s year, decided to take on the task of beginning to rebuild a sustainable ladies club. The CGI Ladies Get Into Golf programme was a “life-saver” as it gave some structure and guidance to the process. “We were in dire straits here in the club with no young members really to speak of,” explained Kay. “The young members we did have got involved, especially Caroline Breen, our youngest playing member, and helped to spread the word through social media and their friends about the six-week programme we were going to run.” The online activity enticed 62 to attend the first taster session and then the sixweek programme of lessons and oncourse activities began. “Without the Get Into Golf programme I

The idyllic Ross Golf Course is a 9-hole parkland course designed and built within and around Killarney Racecourse. This unique setting takes in the breath-taking views of the beautiful Killarney National Park, Ross Castle, Killarney Lakes and MacGillycuddy’s Reeks. The rich parkland available for this project ensured the design and creation of a top class 9-hole golf course. This 6,514yard course extends beyond the confines of the racetrack where an abundance of existing trees were carefully incorporated into the design, making for a challenging but ultimately fair

really don’t think we would have a ladies club now. The programme was great but we wanted to provide a follow-on to integrate the new members into the club after the six weeks.” So, Strictly Come Golfing, an autumn to winter league where new members were “partnered” with existing members to practice and play as a foursomes pair, was born. The culmination of the set was a shotgun start followed by music and entertainment where the ladies could really swap their golf shoes for dancing ones! “We always wanted to make sure the new members were involved and integrated in the club,” said Kay. “Most have young families or are working but we always encouraged them to play some golf - and make sure they had some time for a coffee or a drink with their playing partners!” Two years on and Dooks ladies club has grown with 42 taking up some form of membership, while the average age has decreased significantly. There’s certainly a bright future ahead for the club.

6 Ways To Improve Your Game In 2018 Golf can be a frustrating sport for everyone, even the best players in the world, but just a few simple adjustments could lead to drastic improvements in your game. Follow these simple tips and 2018 could be the year that you finally reach your potential. 1. Join a club Becoming a member of one of Killarney’s many wonderful golf clubs will not only save you money on green fees, it will also encourage you to play more. Spending more time on the course and on the range will give you the opportunity to get to know your game and highlight any issues you might be having, allowing you to focus on certain areas and make adjustments.

2. Take lessons If you’re unhappy with an element of your game, ask for help. You could be tinkering with your swing for years but it might take a professional ten seconds to identify a problem and suggest a solution. 3. Leave your comfort zone We all have our favourite courses, clubs and shot types but sometimes we can become two comfortable with the norm. Try something new. If you always lay up on a certain hole, decide one morning that you’re going to go for it. Life begins at the end of your comfort zone. 4. Don’t dwell on mistakes Mistakes are bound to happen, the important thing is how we react. All the best golfers have the abili-

ty to forget that missed putt or shanked drive. You can’t change the past so focus on the next shot. 5. Exercise Golf hasn’t always been considered an athlete’s game but if you look at the new brand of players dominating the professional game, they’re a far cry from the likes of John Daly and Colin Montgomerie. Working out will improve your strength and stamina, while also improving your psychological well-being in the process. 6. Practice, practice, practice In the words of legendary South African golfer Gary Player, “the more I practice, the luckier I get.” Get out on the course, work on your game and have some fun.

Garden Magic Daffodils Already? I looked out of my window this week, and what did I see? Daffodils. And some crocus. Winter is making way for spring already, despite the cold spell! There is not much happening outside at the moment, but January is a wonderful month to really appreciate bark… Dogwoods, birches, willows, all these have beautifully coloured bark. Then there are peeling barks, such as that of the Eucalyptus or the snake bark maple. There are flowers to be had also, though I think some plants are a little confused. I have a Eucryphia lucida in full flower at the moment, when really it should have flowered in the early autumn. Where our seasons are headed I do not know, but it is interesting to see the effects of climate change. One plant which is flowering – at the right time!- is Hamamelis. There are several varieties of Hamamelis, or Witch Hazel, for sale. The most common is Hamamelis mollis, which produces yellow, spidery shaped flowers in January. They have a unique spicy scent which is beautiful on a calm day! Hamamelis comes from the Greek hama – at the same time, and melon – which means apple or fruit. This is because the Hamamelis flowers and fruits at the same time. The common name,

Witch Hazel, by which it is better known, comes from the old English wych, to bend, and haesl, a bush. It was traditionally witch hazel branches that were used for water divination. Now we are familiar with Witch Hazel as a tonic for inflamed skin, or as a soothing and cleansing lotion for problematic skin. Mind though, actual consumption of these products is quite toxic! Witch hazels grow well in acidic soil in a temperate climate, so are ideal for Kerry. They do not, unfortunately, like a heavy clay soil, but if you can give them just 18 inches of fairly good topsoil, they will reward you with a beautiful show of flowers in the depths of winter! They do not like light dry soil, so keep them moist… which generally speaking is easy for us gardeners in Killarney! Witch Hazels are not as well known as they maybe should be. It was discovered in China in 1878 by the plant hunter Charles Maries, who sent a batch of seeds to England. Only one seedling grew, and was left to grow, unnoticed for about 20 years. Luckily the curator of Kew Gardens spotted it, and it was for sale to the public in 1902. It is still for sale, and in my opinion makes an outstanding large shrub for any garden!

Yes, we are heading into the third week in January, we should be getting back into our exercise routine, says Jill Duggan of Killarney Toning & Beauty Studio

Get Fit, Get Active THE kids have put down a week so the complaining should be subsiding now. It’s now time for “mom” to get back into her routine. We have no more excuses to use – book for a free trial on the toning tables and see for yourself how they can work wonders. If you’re sitting at a desk all day, or driving (mom’s taxi) – whatever it is, you’re sure to feel amazing after your first session on the toning tables, that’s a guarantee. A new client told me the other day how she always thought the toning tables were the lazy way out. I asked her when she last did any kind of exercise and she replied she hadn’t done any for years. I suggested that the toning tables would be a great platform to get back exercising and get her motivation back on track. When I asked her why she hadn’t done any form of exercise, she said she was frightened and felt unfit. What are you waiting for, if this is the only thing stopping you pick up the phone and book a trial. After her session I asked how did she feel? She said she felt amazing – that she felt she had been lengthened and stretched like never before. She was much more motivated than before she started and was really happy she took the first step and booked her free trial. • Call Jill now to book an appointment or for more information on 0646632966

‘Perfection’ In Your Performance I HAVE battled with the idea of attaining what is perceived as “perfection” in performance for quite some time. As someone who studied my own instrument at an academic level I sometimes wonder if an artistic form of expression should be nurtured instead of being trained. In today’s society anything that comes ‘from nature’ or is ‘natural’ is considered to be a good thing. I then wonder if a natural talent such a singing or dancing or painting should not be trained but more so, enhanced? I think to ‘train’ something can almost put it into a box where it must do what it is told and it must follow the rules. Should natural expression have so many rules?? I am a singing teacher myself and I prefer to say I give singing lessons rather than voice training. These lessons include

Preheat the oven to 180C Over medium heat, warm the oil in a large pan. Season the chicken pieces with salt and pepper, and cook until they are well browned on all sides. Transfer chicken to a platter and keep it in a warm place while you work on the vegetables. Pour off all but two tablespoons of the cooking fat from the pan. Lower the heat to medium, add the butter, onions, shallots, garlic, and thyme, and cook and stir just until the vegetables start to take on a little colour. Add the potatoes, carrots, celeriac and bacon and cook for about five minutes. Cover the pan and cook for another 10 minutes, stirring every few minutes. Add the mushrooms, season with salt and pepper, and return the chicken to the pan. Add the chicken stock, bring to the boil. Bake, uncovered, for 20 to 25 minutes.

Robert Kubica Still Targeting Full F1 Return After Missing Out On Williams 2018 Seat Kubica confirmed as Williams reserve driver as Sirotkin takes the final Williams F1 seat. Pole will take part in testing and a number of practice sessions. Robert Kubica insists his “ultimate goal” remains a full Formula 1 return despite losing out to Sergey Sirotkin in the battle for the 2018 Williams seat.

Citroen Racing team principal Yves Matton has been confirmed as the FIA’s new rally director. Matton takes over from Jarmo Mahonen at the head of the governing body’s rally department, while his job at Citroen will be taken by Pierre Budar – who had been running PSA Motorsport’s customer racing department. Budar takes over as Citroen Racing director, with Matton expected to step into his new job at the start of February. Citroen has scaled back to two full-time entries this year for Kris Meeke and Craig Breen - who will be replaced by Sebastien Loeb for three events. Matton side-lined Meeke and Nagle for Rally Poland last year. Meeke was very vocal on the lack of support during this period. Hopefully this change could be good for Meeke and Nagle starting into their second year with Citroen.

How 3M Could Put The Brakes On The Rebrand Of F1 Formula One’s plans to launch a new range of clothing could get the red light after it emerged that its new logo bears a striking similarity to a pan-European trademark which has been registered by 3M, the maker of Scotch tape and Post-It Notes.

Paul Nagle, Kris Meeke and Citroen Team Principal Yves Matton celebrate after winning the Rally Spain last year.

Lewis Hamilton Returns To Social Media Hamilton has kept a low profile on social media so far in 2018 after deleting all posts on his Instagram and Twitter feeds, just days after being criticised for a video posted on Boxing Day which included comments about his nephew wearing a dress. But the world champion’s Instagram account was back in action on Wednesday.

Jaguar Technology Drives 150 New Jobs To Shannon 150 new jobs are on their way to Shannon thanks to development of driver-less technologies by the Jaguar Land Rover group. JLR said last year that all its new cars would be available in an electric or hybrid version from 2020 and is building its first fully electric model, the I-PACE, in Austria, which will go on sale this year. The company said it had selected Shannon as it is a globally recognized center of excellence for software engineering talent. The Indian owned company has confirmed that it will locate its new center at two new state-of-the-art buildings at the Shannon

Free Zone. Shannon Group plc, has described the announcement as a major validation of the ambitious investment program underway at the Shannon Free Zone. “The new facility provides an exciting opportunity for us to pioneer future autonomous and electrifica-

tion technologies,” said JLR’s Executive Director of Product Engineering Nick Rogers. ”The creation of a team in Shannon strengthens our international engineering capabilities and complements our existing team of more than 10,000 engineers based in the UK.”

Leave my body wherever it may lie, But remember my soul at The alter of the Lord The twenty first of January, Two thousand and eight, A date in our memories We’ll never forget A son, a brother, a true friend. You fought so bravely to the very end Though it was in Cork that You passed away, A Kerry man to the bone Until your dying day. When we’re feeling down Or a little bit blue, We’ll just close our eyes and think of you We’ll hear you in each wind that blows Or in the fall of each December snow A true gentleman you made no fuss It was Johnny time, no need to rush Now he’s playing with angels In heaven up above We’ll keep our special memories And treasure them with love The month’s stretch on before us So bleak and so long We pray you’ll walk beside us, Help to keep us strong, And when our life is over, Come to us that day, Come smiling towards us And carry us away

We extend our deep gratitude to O’Shea’s Funeral Directors, Sr. Mary Lyne, Fr. Nicholas Flynn, Fr. Paddy O’Donoghue, Fr Simon Twomey, and Deacon Thady O’Connor for their respective participation in the removal, mass and internment. We would like to acknowledge and express out warmest appreciation to all those who attended Sheila’s rosary, removal and funeral mass, those who sent mass cards, letters of condolences, perpetual enrolments and those who travelled to be with us. It has been a difficult and sad year for all of us but we have been given continued strength by all the kindness and support we have received from so many. As it is not possible to thank everyone individually please accept this as a token of our sincere appreciation and gratitude. The Holy Sacrifice of the Mass has been offered for your intentions. “God came and stood beside your bed, He took your hand and gently said, You have suffered more than I can stand, So come with me to your heavenly land” Sadly missed and lovingly remembered by her sons, daughters and the extended O’Connor and Lynch families.

PRAYER TO ST. JOSEPH

HICKEY (NEE BUCKLEY)

RIORDAN

O St. Joseph, whose protection is so great, so strong, so prompt before the throne of God, I place in you all my interest and desires. O St. Joseph, do assist me by your powerful intercession, and obtain for me from your divine Son all spiritual blessings, through Jesus Christ, our Lord. So that, having engaged here below your heavenly power, I may offer my thanksgiving and homage to the most loving of Fathers. O, St. Joseph, I never weary contemplating you, and Jesus asleep in our arms; I dare not approach while He reposes near your heart. Press Him in my name and kiss His fine head for me and ask Him to return the kiss when I draw my dying breath. St. Joseph, Patron of departing souls pray for me. This prayer was found in the fiftieth year of Our Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ. In 1505 it was sent from the Pope to Emperor Charles when he was going into battle. Who ever shall read this prayer or hear it or keep it about themselves, shall never die a sudden death, or be drowned, nor shall be burned in any fire or shall be overpowered in battle. Say for nine mornings for anything you desire. It has never been known to fail, so be sure you really want what you ask for. In thanks for request granted.

In loving memory of my dear sister Noreen, late of Dalton’s Avenue and St Brendan’s Place, Killarney, who died on 20th of January 1968. R.I.P.

No Love For Amour As Lakers Crush Celtics The league’s best player managed “just” 26 – well below his outrageous season average, writes Adam Moynihan

I think he may have scored a couple more than that – either way, it was less than 30 altogether), an extraordinary feat considering the numbers that he has been putting up all season. In Dailian Mason they have a legitimate threepoint weapon and if Bootle can continue to play like he did last weekend, there’s no reason why the Lakers can’t compete for the Division 1B title. Lakers top scorers: D Mason (24), A Bootle (23), and D Griffin (18). Celtics top scorers: M St Amour (26), J Galvin (23) and E Browne (16).

National League: Division 1B Scotts Lakers 97 LIT Celtics 77 Tight ‘D’ was the key as the Scotts Lakers returned to winning ways with an impressive 20-point victory over the LIT Celtics in the Killarney Sports and Leisure Centre on Saturday night. The heavy defeat to Ballincollig in the President’s Cup semi-final had left a sour taste in the mouth but an accomplished display on home court against potentially tricky opponents was just what the doctor ordered. New man Dailian Mason caught the eye with his accuracy from long range but it was the Lakers defence that really got the job done as Matt St Amour, the league’s leading scorer, was held to fewer than 30 points for the first time this season. American big man Antuan Bootle also made his sizeable presence felt as the Lakers pulled away in the second half to seal a crucial win in what was their first game in the Division 1B Shield. Coming into the game, many of the home fans were eager to see LIT guard Matt St Amour in action. St Amour had been averaging a frankly ridiculous 40 points per game, despite playing for a team that finished 11th in the overall standings. The Vermont native didn’t disappoint in the opening period as he kept his side within striking distance by making a string of very difficult shots. English point guard Dailian Mason fired the Lakers into the lead with two three-pointers but six straight points from St Amour – a three and three-point play – tied the game up at 18 with four minutes left in the quarter. The teams went more or less score for score for the remainder of the period before a nice pass from club captain Philip O’Connor set up Bootle to make it 30-26 as time ran out. The Lakers continued to shoot the ball well in the second and when Mason nailed another shot from outside the perimeter with a minute and a half to go, the hosts led by 14. Celtics talisman St Amour had the final say of the half as he knocked down another remarkably difficult shot to cut the deficit to twelve. He already had 25 and looked for all the world to be heading towards yet another 40+ point game. Bootle, Mason and Dan Griffin - who was excellent

on the night - kept the scoreboard ticking over for the home team and, perhaps more crucially, the defence started to put the squeeze on St Amour by throwing multiple bodies at him on each play. This forced him into increasingly difficult shots or, more often than not, into handing the ball off to one of his teammates. Good work from John Galvin and Emmett Browne helped LIT to creep back into contention but another three from Mason and a fast break lay-up from Mark Greene made it 64-53 midway through the third. When Justin Tuason chipped in with a spectacular three-point play just moments later, the Lakers were up by 15 and the Celtics’ race appeared to be run. With the overworked St Amour getting fewer and fewer looks at the basket, the Limerick side never really looked to have the firepower to mount a comeback and so it proved with the Lakers running out comprehensive 97-77 winners. It was a very promising outing for Cormac O’Donoghue’s men who broke the 90-point barrier for only the third time this season. According to the official stats sheet, the Lakers defence managed to restrict Matt St Amour to just a solitary point in the entire second half (although

Mason, Bootle & Griffin Shine In Big Home Win SCOTTS Lakers bounced back from their National Cup semi-final loss to record a convincing 20-point victory over the LIT Celtics in Killarney Sports and Leisure Centre last Saturday night. The Lakers are competing in the Division 1B section of the league for the second half of the season and are now joint top with LYIT Donegal. If the Lakers can reproduce a few more performances like last weekend, they should be in a strong position to challenge for the Shield title at the end of the season. The Lakers started really well with Antuan Bootle, Dailian Mason and Andrew Fitzgerald leading the scoring. Mason found his range from three-point land from an early stage but Limerick’s American player Matt St Amour was equally impressive racking up 16 points in this quarter. The Celtics also had former Limerick football star John Galvin lining out for the first time this season and he was proving more than a handful under the boards. With four minutes left in the first quarter the score was 18 points each. The Lakers finished the quarter much stronger, however, with automatic free throw shooting from Dan Griffin along with baskets from Fitzger-

ald and Bootle. The home side led 30-26. The home side extended their advantage in the second quarter with further scores from Mason and Griffin. The impressive Justin Tuason also added to the scoring as further three-pointers from Mason helped the Lakers to a 48-34 lead with two minutes left in the half. Scotts Lakers enjoyed a 50-38 advantage at half time with the outstanding Dailian Mason contributing 18 points at this stage while Matt St Amour led the way for Celtics with 25. Amazingly, St Amour only went on to manage four points in the whole second half and this proved to be a huge factor in favour of Scotts Lakers. Killarney coach Cormac O’Donoghue made sure that St Amour was doubled-teamed most of the time to limit his scoring threat. John Galvin was a shining light for Limerick, however, and a big score from him while also drawing a third foul from Antuan Bootle narrowed the gap to 55-47 with 6:20 left in the third quarter. Limerick actually outscored the Lakers in this quarter by three points. Despite the Celtics’ slight scoring dominance, Griffin, Bootle, Mason, Tuason, Mark Greene and team captain Philip O’Connor kept the Lakers in firm control overall and

the home side led 74 -65 entering the final quarter. The Lakers continued to dominate with Philip O’Connor and Justin Tuason making early impressions in the closing period. Mason hit another huge three-pointer while Antuan Bootle clocked up nine points in quick succession and the Lakers enjoyed a 20-point lead with five minutes remaining. Despite having Mason and Bootle fouled out, Scotts Lakers lead was never threatened and young players Mark O’Shea, Paul Clarke and Cian Clernon impressed as the home side remained in firm control. Dan Griffin had his best game of the season and closed out the scoring to secure a comfortable 20-point win for Scotts Lakers. Overall it was a superb all-round team performance from Scotts Lakers with Dailian Mason leading the way hitting six three-pointers in his 24 points total. He has been a big signing and has made a very significant difference to the Lakers outside scoring threat. A return of 17 points from 19 free throws from the home side was another satisfying statistic and a huge improvement on recent games. Scotts Lakers are on the road this weekend, away to the Galway Titans.

Killarney’s youngest club were formed just seven years ago by a group of friends. On Sunday, they’ll host one of the biggest teams in the country. It has been quite a journey, writes Adam Moynihan

Galaxies Apart: Killarney Underdogs To Host Mighty Janesboro Munster Junior Cup (Last 32) Cedar Galaxy v Janesboro Sunday, January 21 at 2pm (Celtic Park) FOR MANY YEARS, Athletic and Celtic (founded in 1965 and 1976 respectively) were the only two soccer clubs in Killarney town. At senior level, both of these teams invariably operate in the county’s top division and players who maybe weren’t quite at that standard had no choice but to line out for the clubs’ B teams. If a guy simply didn’t want to play for Athletic or Celtic – which happens – he would be forced to join a team outside of town. Many people, having weighed up all of their options, just gave up playing altogether. That all changed in 2011 when a bunch of Killarney lads (a couple of whom resided in Cedar Lodge out the Cork Road) came up with the idea of forming their own soccer club. Cedar Galaxy was born and the fledgling outfit signed up for the Kerry District League Reserve Cup. Having got a taste of competitive action, they decided to enter the league. They started in Division 2B, the sixth tier of Kerry football, with no real goals other than to enjoy themselves. Seven short years later and they’re gearing up to host the champions of Limerick in the last 32 of the Munster Junior Cup. It has been a remarkable rise and one that none of the founding members saw coming, says current manager and former player Darragh O’Regan. “When it started there were no real expectations - we were probably expecting to get hockeyed,” he admitted. “Next thing we entered the league and won our first five games. We had bad blood

with Mastergeeha B the first year. They were always playing A players against us and that cost us a deserved league final back then.” It turned out to be a minor hiccup. Cedar have been promoted three times already in their short existence and currently find themselves second in Division 1A. Promotion this year would see them move up to the Premier B, just one step away from Kerry’s top table. This season, Galaxy decided to enter the Munster Junior Cup for the first time. Up against all of the top teams in Kerry and with only two teams advancing to the last 32, you would have gotten long odds on Killarney’s other team running the gauntlet – but that’s exactly what they did. Victory over Premier B side Mitchels Avenue set up a daunting looking fixture with one of the biggest clubs in the county, Tralee Dynamos. “I never really feared Mitchels Avenue in the first round but Dynamos I did fear,” said O’Regan. ‘They have a big reputation, even though they might be struggling a bit this year.” Cedar rose to the challenge, winning 2-0 in what their manager describes as “the best team performance that we’ve ever had”. On Sunday, Galaxy will come up against a very different beast. Janesboro are the reigning champions of Limerick, a league considered by many to be one of the strongest in the country. They reached the quarter final of the FAI Junior

Cup in 2017 only to be beaten by Killarney Celtic after extra time and they were one of the pre-tournament favourites this season but the Limerick kingpins surprisingly crashed out in the early rounds. This will actually be Janesboro’s third trip to Killarney in the space of a year; they defeated Killarney Athletic in the semi-final of the Munster Champion’s trophy back in November. So what are Cedar Galaxy – a plucky third division team with no pitch and no youth teams realistically hoping for on Sunday? “I’ll be very honest with you,” O’Regan said, “it’s our first time entering the Munster Junior Cup and the FAI Junior Cup and our outlook was, ‘we’re gonna give it a go, we’ll see where we are, don’t embarrass ourselves’. We’ve put in good preparation and our boys are very good to train, they’re very disciplined. We’ve got some very good players and we try to play a good brand of football.” “I would say, ‘come and have a look’. See what grassroots football is like in Killarney - outside of Athletic and Celtic.” Potential Cedar Galaxy line-up (4-4-1-1): David Kerins; Frank Cronin, Ger Foley, Mike Murphy, Gary Cassidy; Tadhg Fleming, Joe Donovan, Joe Hurley, Sam Trehane; Hubert Dziedzic; John Foley.

Extra Time Experts Celtic Advance To Last 16 The Hoops are through to the next round after a dramatic clash in Westmeath, writes Killarney Athletic’s Adam Moynihan

FAI Junior Cup (Last 32) Willow Park 1-2 Killarney Celtic (Athlone) CELTIC are back in the last 16 of the FAI Junior Cup following a hard-fought win over Willow Park in Athlone last weekend. Last year’s semi-finalists made the perfect start when midfielder Gary Keane got on the end of a Jamie Spillane free kick to fire them into the lead in just the second minute.

Donnellan: Extra time experience helped us Willow Park equalised from the spot early in the second half but Celtic were handed a golden opportunity to retake the lead when they were awarded a penalty of their own. Willow keeper Michael Fogarty brought down Wayne Sparling inside the area and received a straight red card for his troubles but, unfortunately for the Hoops, Jamie Spillane’s subsequent effort was saved. Celtic were also reduced to ten men when Brendan Falvey picked up his second yellow card and with neither team able to break the deadlock, the game went to extra time. The decisive moment came in the first period when Celtic won yet another spot kick. This time, skipper John McDonagh stepped up and made no mistake to fire the visitors into the last 16 of Ireland’s premier junior soccer tournament. Speaking after the game, Celtic manager Eoghan Donnellan was quick to praise the attitude of his players. “To be fair, I knew going out on the pitch that the lads were very confident,” he said. “They were determined and you could see that there

They came up to get a result, which we did in the end.” This was far from uncharted territory for the Celts. They took both Janesboro and Sheriff to extra time in last season’s memorable FAI Junior Cup run, and Donnellan felt this was a crucial factor in Saturday’s game. “Without a shadow of a doubt that experience helped us,” he said. “When you look back at last year, you almost expect these games to go to extra time. At the end of normal time, we felt we had the fitness on them. It was a very big pitch - 112 x 80 yards wide - and we knew that with our fitness levels and with the youth in our side, we were al-

ways going to have a good chance in extra time.” Looking ahead to the draw for the next round, which takes place today (Friday) at 1pm, the Celtic boss was clear on what his team were hoping for. “A home draw.” “The one thing we know from last year in this competition is that an away draw is always a tough encounter. If you can get a home draw it always gives you an advantage and I don’t think anyone will really want to come to Celtic Park, especially under lights. If we get a big crowd like we did last year against Janesboro, it will certainly stand to us.” In the shorter term, Celtic will host Ballingarry of Limerick in the last 32 of the Munster Junior Cup on Saturday. Elsewhere, Killarney Athletic drew 3-3 with Castleisland in the league last Sunday and will be hoping to get back to winning ways this weekend when they host Classic FC in the first round of the Greyhound Bar KO Cup. Rugby News ... Words: Liam Murphy LAST weekend saw they resumption of the European Cup, with Munster, Leinster and Ulster in action. Ulster beat French high fliers La Rochelle at the Kingspan in an epic display, meanwhile Leinster utterly dominated Glasgow at the RDS, winning 55 points to 19 points. Next weekend the men in Blue take on Montpellier away while Ulster travel to the Ricoh Arena

to play asps in the final round of the pool stages. Finally on Sunday, Munster travelled to the brand new U Arena in Paris – Racing 92’s custom built closed-roof dome, built at a cost of €350 million. An impressive location was matched by an equally impressive and top quality match, with the home side running out the victors on a 34-30 scoreline. Munster were kept Keatley had another excellent display from the boot, however Conor Murray’s long range penalty will probably make the headlines. All in all a bonus point loss for the men in Red, which keeps them at the top of the pool. Next Sunday they host Castres at Thomond Park, a match

which should be another thriller. Also on Munster’s group, Leicester were thrashed by Castres in France on a scoreline of 39 points to 0, further highlighting their fall from the top tier European Rugby – a fact that will not sit well with their fanbase. All in all, it was another pulsating rugby weekend, which has become the norm when it comes to European rugby. This weekend the final eight will be decided ahead of the Six Nations which kicks off on February 3 with Wales hosting Scotland, France hosting Joe Schmidt’s Ireland and Italy hosting England. Excitement is certainly mounting ahead of this year’s Six Nations.

Kerry Group Rás Mumhan 2018 THE organisers of Kerry Group Rás Mumhan 2018 and Kerry Group are delighted to announce the continuation of their successful partnership. Kerry Group Rás Mumhan 2018 will take place over the Easter weekend, March 30 to April 2, 2018. Kerry Group Rás Mumhan is Ireland’s premier amateur cycling event and will celebrate the 61st anniversary of the first staging of the race in 2018. As previously the race will be open to entries from 35 teams of 5 riders. The remaining five slots will be filled by teams invited by the race organisation. The race will attract the best amateur riders in Ireland. They will fight it out over four long, tough road racing stages with some of the best amateur riders from England, Scotland, the

Isle of Man and Holland. The mix of different nationalities makes for a unique style of racing which has the speed of continental racing and the ferocious attacking characteristic of racing in Ireland. Kerry Group Rás Mumhan is a difficult race to win and is viewed by upcoming younger riders as a stepping stone to getting up to the professional ranks. This makes the under-23 category one of the more intense and hard fought parts of the race. Race director Tadhg Moriarty and event organiser Kieran Doherty paid tribute to Kerry Group for its loyal and generous sponsorship which has seen the race evolve to its current high standard of organisation and competitiveness. The director of Corporate Affairs at

Kerry Group, Frank Hayes, said: “We are pleased to continue our association with Kerry Group Rás Mumhan. Events such as this, which encourage community activation, volunteering and that, bring an economic benefit to the area, fit well with the profile of community activities that we continue to support.” Details of the routes for Kerry Group Rás Mumhan 2018 and the details of application for entry to the race will be published presently. The format of the race will remain unchanged from recent years. There will be four road stages starting on Good Friday, March 30, and concluding on Easter Monday, April 2.
