Lifesavers! Family praise hero firemen

The family of an elderly Killarney woman are calling for awards to be presented to two members of Killarney Fire and Rescue after they saved her life. | By Sean Moriarty Kathleen Flynn was at home in Ardshanavooly when she started to choke on her food. Her daughter Ann was in the house at the time. “She started to choke on her sandwich, I got an awful fright, I did not know what to do,” she told the Killarney Advertiser. In her panic she called her sister Maria who, in turn, called the emergency services. However, the Killarney ambulance was already attending an incident in Kenmare and a unit had to be despatched from Tralee. Meanwhile Ann, rushed out of the house

HAPPY: Kathleen Flynn enjoyed St Patrick’s Day at home. If it wasn’t for the fast action of two local firemen it could have been a different story.

where she met her neighbour Christina O’Grady, the wife of well-known Killarney fireman John O’Grady. By now Maria and her two brothers Alan and Gerard had arrived on the scene fearing the worst. Luckily John and his brother Martin (who lives two doors up) were at home at the time and they rushed to aid of their elderly neighbour.

The brothers, through their training as fire and rescue officers, were able to stabilise Mrs Flynn. “There was no way my mother would have made it,” Alan told the Killarney Advertiser, “She had lost consciousness and stopped breathing. We stopped Dr O’Doherty who just happened to be passing and he helped too but the two boys had already manged to get her breathing.” Meanwhile a fire engine was despatched from Killarney Fire Station. The unit had, on-board, breathing and other lifesaving equipment and were able to help Kathleen even further while they waited the arrival of the Tralee ambulance. Mrs Flynn was first taken to University Hospital Kerry and then to Cork University Hospital. After a few days in hospital she was able to return home. She spent St Patrick’s Day with her family - something they are very grateful for. “If it wasn’t for the two O’Grady brothers and all they did, we would be having a very different conversation now," her daughter Anne told the Killarney Ad-

vertiser. “They should be put forward for an award and given whatever is going. There is no doubt, but what they did, they saved her life.” Long serving councillor Donal Grady, father of the two firemen and himself a former fire officer in town has been calling for years for a better ambulance service to serve the Killarney area. “I am very proud of them,” he told the Killarney Advertiser but warned that there will be a tragedy unless local fire stations are allowed act as ambulance bases. This move was promised by the Health Service Executive (HSE) and Department of Health in 2018 but so far it has not been acted upon. Last July, he asked Kerry County Council to write to Darragh O’Brien, the Minister for Housing, Planning and Local Government seeking a date on the implementation of this life-saving and long-promised service. “This service would significantly improve response times and patient outcome in the county,” he told the Killarney Advertiser at the time. Kerry currently has six ambulance bases and 10 fire stations. “Kerry, as a rural county, would greatly benefit from this as distance to a patient is the biggest delay factor,” Grady told the Killarney Advertiser. In the first quarter of 2020 – the latest figures available to the Killarney Advertiser - 27 different calls in County Kerry had a response time of over one hour. Only counties Cork and Wexford have a worse response time.

The unknown soldier of the Headford Ambush EXCLUSIVE

| By Sean Moriarty A grand-nephew of the unknown soldier who died during the War of Independence Ambush at Headford one hundred years ago this week has vowed to visit the site as soon as restrictions permit.

CENTENARY: Giles Baily cannot attend the centenary of his granduncle’s death but hopes to get to Killarney soon

Giles Baily left Kerry for Dublin in 1961 to study Dentistry and eventually set up his own practice in Castleknock. He grew up listening to stories of the ambush, his grandfather was P.J.Baily who was a brother of Lieutenant Jimmy Baily who along with Commandant Dan Allman were killed during the Headford Junction Ambush March, 21 1921. An IRA brigade intercepted a train carrying British troops. The subsequent gunfight left 14 men dead, nine British soldiers, two IRA volunteers and three civilians. The centenary celebration of the single

biggest Irish Republican Army operation in Kerry during the War of Independence was due to take place this Sunday but has been postponed due to crowd-gathering rules connected with COVID-19 restrictions. Allman was one of the leaders of the ambush. he and his colleague Baily were the two IRA men killed in the attack. However Baily’s identity was never released as locals feared revenge attacks from the British forces. “Over 20 priests were present at the funeral from Killarney Cathedral to Aglish of Daniel Allman and the unknown volunteer who died in the Headford Ambush," said a contemporary newspaper report at the time. “Growing up we were told about the Ambush with pride in our grand uncle,” Giles told the Killarney Advertiser. “The family history has it that Jimmy was not identified by the British, and was buried with Dan Allman to avoid the fam-

ily been targeted by the British Crown Forces, and afterwards his body was exhumed and buried in a separate grave.” Both Giles and his cousin Justin Bailey were looking forward to attending the now postponed event.

Marking a moment in time For the second year in a row the streets of Killarney fell silent on St Patrick’s Day. | By Sean Moriarty Ireland’s National Holiday is usually a day of celebration and revelry but all public events were cancelled again this year as the country remains on COVID-19 alert. There was an eerie silence the town centre on Wednesday afternoon. Both the Municipal District Mayor and Killarney Gardai thanked the people of Killarney fo their high level of compliance

and promised better days are ahead. “I am so proud of the people of Killarney and wider district, “Mayor Brendan Cronin told the Killarney Advertiser. “There is hope ahead and the brighter days are very close.” The Mayor of Killarney is usually very busy on St Patrick’s Day. He would be one of the leading dignitaries at the parade, he would be obliged to give

welcome speeches to national and international visitors as well as attending religious and other ceremonies. “I just drove into town and visited some of the many displays – it was very visible [the lack of large crowds] but it was also nice to see families marking the day in their own way (within the guidelines).” Meanwhile Killarney Gardai reported a very quiet Bank Holiday and there no reports of unessential crowd gatherings. “The day passed off fine,” Superintendent Flor Murphy told the Killarney Advertiser. “There were people out and

about but everyone was behaving in a responsible [within public health guidelines] manner. There is a high level of compliance in the Killarney area. This is what we want to see so we can get out of this.” One of these photographs was taken on Main St on Wednesday afternoon around the same time that the annual St Patrick’s Day parade was expected to pass through town. The other photograph taken by wellknown and respected local snapper Valerie O’Sullivan was captured during the 2019 running of the hugely popular event. The contrasting images capture the times we live in and the good times that lay ahead.

Parents managing school Ballyspillane Feud: Four men banned from Killarney crossing at Fossa NS Killarney Gardai said there will be more arrests in relation to the anti-social behaviour issues at Ballyspillane over the Christmas period.

Concerns have been raised after parents are being forced to operate a school crossing in Fossa. Since pupils returned to school following the extended post-Christmas lockdown, Fossa National School has been left without a school traffic warden. Local TD Michael Healy-Rae was contacted by parents of the school to raise the issue. He understands that the unavailability of the traffic warden is for insurance reasons. Earlier this month, when pupils returned to school, their parents learned that they were going to be left without a school warden. As a result they have taken things into their own hands. “Suitably qualified volunteers are now taking charge of the crossing in the morning and evening,” Deputy Healy-Rae told the Killarney Advertiser. “This cannot continue.” The Killarney Advertiser understands

Local TD Michael Healy-Rae.

that one local building contractor, who has traffic management qualifications due to the nature of his work on some public roads, is supplying the correct equipment for the crossing. In the past several local councillors including Brendan Cronin and Maura Healy-Rae have called for a pedestrian crossing and other traffic calming measures in the village. Work has commenced on a new cycle way in the area and that project does include traffic calming measures.

Superintendent Flor Murphy told the Killarney Advertiser the investigation “is very much live and on-going,” after court appearances this week. Four men appeared before Killarney District Court on Tuesday. They faced charges in relation to a violent disorder incident in Ballyspillane over the Christmas period. Following Tuesday’s court session the four men – aged in their 20s and 40s – were told they were barred from Killarney and were only allowed in to the town for court and police investigation reasons. As part of Operation Spider, a policing

response to public order incidents during the Christmas period in Killarney, Gardaí dealt with incidents of violent disorder in the Ballyspillane area between December 24 and 25, 2020. During this violent disorder a number of homes and cars were damaged, people assaulted, and weapons used. “This brings the total number of arrests to 13 in relation to these incidents,” Mr Murphy told the Killarney Advertiser. Five of these are currently before the courts while the other four are juveniles and will be dealt with under the Juvenile Diversion Programme. This is in addition to the four men who were arrested on Monday and detained at Tralee and Killarney Garda Stations under Section 4 of the Criminal Justice Act, 1984.

Killarney to get over €16 million in funding windfall As predicted in last week’s Killarney Advertiser, Killarney is to receive €16.6 million in funding in the Regional Economic Driver and Destination programme attached to the urban regeneration scheme.

That is not the only good news for the county as Tralee is set to get €15.93 million under the same scheme. The Killarney Advertiser exclusively revealed last week that Killarney was set to get millions in funding, and that the announcement would be timed to coincide with the St Patrick’s Day celebrations. The funding will include monies allocated towards the regeneration of the derelict Áras Phádraig and the designation of the Glebe Craft quarter in the town centre. Minister for Education Norma Foley TD today (Friday) welcomed the announcement of €31.90 million in funding for the Tralee and Killarney regions under the Urban Regeneration and Development Fund (URDF). The URDF part-funds projects aimed at enhancing urban areas to make them more attractive places to live, work, visit and invest. This funding is part of a Government promise to assist with residential and commercial development, supported by infrastructure, services and amenities and within the existing built-up areas of larger urban settlements. Minister Foley said: “I welcome the an-

nouncement of almost €32 million in Kerry by my Cabinet colleague, Minister for Housing, Local Government and Heritage Darragh O’ Brien. “I have been working on these twin projects for some months with Minister O’Brien and I am delighted with this positive and timely boost for our country.” “I wish to thank Kerry County Council for their work on the applications. Their support has been crucial to the delivery of both projects. "This funding will help create opportunities for commercial development in Tralee and Killarney while enhancing the many natural amenities and attractions that make Kerry one of the country’s top tourist destinations. "I believe that this funding can be a catalyst for regeneration, development and growth.” Among the projects set to benefit from this funding are the town centre Public Realm works in Tralee which would result in the primary streets of the central area of the town being finished to a high standard. “This would link the major retail areas of the Mall, Castle Street and Lower Rock Street to the Island of Geese, and strengthen the links to the town park through St John’s Church Plaza. “It will also help to maximise the wider benefits of tourism in Killarney town centre and to create an experience equivalent to the natural environment that surrounds it.”

Event Safety Manager at Fitzgerald Stadium John Lenihan has called time on his role by announcing his retirement from the job. He was one of the best-known faces at the Killarney venue over the last decade. Over his ten and a half year stint the role changed dramatically with Lenihan responsible for all safety aspects on the big and not so big days including sell out Munster Senior football clashes and Kerry v Tyrone and Kerry v Mayo games. Lenihan was just 16 years old when he landed his first stewarding job at Fitzgerald Stadium as he took the bib at the 1971 Munster Hurling final between Tipperary and Limerick. Over the years, Lenihan has been a constant part of the GAA family in Kilcummin and East Kerry. Having played with Kilcummin up to under 21, He later became a referee and enjoyed long stints

in official roles within the club and the district. Having worked his way up to the Fitzgerald Stadium assistant safety event manager’s role he replaced another Kilcummin man Billy Doolan in the role and settled in quickly. “It certainly got busier over the years with preparations for big games starting up to three weeks before the main event. There was so much that had to be got right and in the times we live in now, paperwork is key and having it right is fierce important. Indeed the file of paperwork was a couple of inches thick by the end,” he said. With thanks to Kilcummin’s Donal Barry of the Kerry Sports Hub.

WINDFALL: Minister for Education Norma Foley TD and Minister for Housing, Local Government and Heritage Darragh O’ Brien have announced an incredible €32 million in funding for Killarney and Tralee.

ST PATRICK'S DAY NEWS

19.3.2021

Children’s art goes on display at St Mary’s | By Sean Morirty Local children had to wait one year to see the fruits of their efforts but a special art display has finally gone on public view at St Mary’s Church of Ireland in the town centre. This time last year, Killarney Chamber of Tourism and Commerce and Kerry County Council launched a special art project that encouraged local children to decorate the church tower in time for the St Patrick’s Day celebration. Sadly, due to obvious circumstances, the public never got a chance to view this

work and the children didn’t see their efforts go on display. But all is not lost as this year the tower of St Mary’s Church of Ireland has been animated by the wonderful creations that were prepared for last year’s festival, thanks to the cooperation and enthusiasm of the Venerable Simon Lumby. The project was facilitated by artist Sophie Lodge who specialises in community art installations, She lives between London and Killarney and has worked on bringing ‘Come Unity’ art to Killarney’s St Patrick's Day Festivals over the last few year.

Killarney is extending the hand of friendship to the bustling village of Verrès in Italy with an open invitation to its community leaders and interested citizens to participate in the town’s 2022 St Patrick’s Day parade. Strong links between the two locations were forged last year when Killarney architect, Davide Mosca – a native of Verrès – returned to his home place where he was chosen to lead the festivities for a four-day Mardi Gras style festival, Carnevale Verres. It effectively saw Davide being crowned king for Italy’s version of the St Patrick’s Day celebrations in the Aosta Valley village of Verrès, to the north-west of Turin. In February of last year, close on 50 people from Killarney travelled to Italy to join the celebrations, including St Patrick’s Festival Chairman Paul Sherry, where Davide Mosca was crowned Count Pierre of Verrès of the festivities. Now Killarney’s festival organisers have invited the people of Verrès to visit next March with both communities anxious to establish cultural and educational links. “We would love to have them visit us.

They were wonderful hosts in 2020 and they are very interested in Killarney. We would be delighted if they participated in next year’s parade,” said Paul Sherry, the chair of Killarney St Patrick’s Day Parade. According to legend dating back to the 1400s, the Count and Countess left Verrès Castle to join locals in a pre-Lent village celebration and the colourful tradition has been upheld since then, with one native son invited to play the role of the Count every year. Davide Mosca, a graduate of the University of Politecnico di Torina, has been living in Killarney for over 20 years. He is the third member of his family to be honoured as Count Pierre in Verrès and he follows in the footsteps of his late father and his brother. The festival features pageantry, masquerade balls and drama as well as lavish dinners and community street celebrations.

Advertiser reunites two antique collectors The Killarney Advertiser prides itself as being the heart of the community and this week were able to reunite two local antique collectors who were able to share valuable information on projects they are working on. | By Sean Moriarty Last week we published a story about James Flynn who located a handcrafted games table, that was made on Main St, and returned it to Killarney from its Boston. Just over a year ago we ran a story about another local collector. Brendan O’Sullivan had discovered the lyrics of a unheard of song about Killarney. He hopes to record this song with the help of local musician Liam O’Connor once restrictions are lifted. While both men are known to each other, they had not met since the pandemic set in. Neither had contact details for the other. When Brendan read last week’s article he realised he had, in his collection, fur-

ther details on the local craftsman called James Coakley who was the original manufacturer of James’ table. “I knew I had to get this information to James,” Brendan said after he contacted the Killarney Advertiser office this week. The Killarney Advertiser arranged for the two men to meet, in a socially distanced manner, outside our offices on Thursday. It was the first time they had meet in a year as a result of the current restrictions. However, James was delighted to read over Brendan’s material, which was published in one of the Lawrence Collection’s photo albums of Killarney which was printedin the late 1800s. “I am delighted to meet Brendan,” James said, “This further authenticates the details of my 138-year-old table.”

Famous US artist now working in Killarney area An artist who has previously worked on some of Hollywood’s biggest movies has moved to Killarney and wants to engage with the local community. Garry Limuti, who painted the backdrops for ‘Pirates of the Caribbean’ while working for Warner Brothers is now based in Faha. During his time in his native America, Limuti specialised in painting portraits of sports celebrities. Some of his paintings are on display in Yankee Stadium in New York and The Staples Center in Los Angeles. He was also a staff artist for the world-famous Jeff Koons, whose paintings and sculptures are in museums and galleries throughout the world. “I have been very lucky to eke a living out of being an artist,” he told the Killarney Advertiser.

He moved to Killarney, along with his US-German wife Katharina, after stint in the south east of Ireland. Prior to that he lived and worked in Kenmare. “We did a lot of research before we moved to Ireland but this place [Killarney] looked just wonderful,” he added. He is also a specialist wall mural artist and is keen to get involved in the wall art scene in Killarney. Currently there are murals on walls on High St and College St and Killarney Municipal District is hoping to expand the town’s current offerings. One of Limuti’s most famous murals is a 30X10 foot mural for the Utah government’s Red Cliffs Desert Reserve that he painted with world renowned muralist and artist Robert Beckmann. He is available for bookings and commissions on 085 2555 687 or see his portfolio on Page 19 of this week’s issue.

Killarney publican launches plan to tackle rising costs in bar trade Local publican Sean O’Mahony has launched a new start-up company, Licensed Premises of Ireland, which will significantly reduce overheads for publicans as they prepare to re-open after lockdown. O’Mahony, who runs the popular Faha Court is no stranger to innovation. In the run up Christmas 2019 he launched ‘Social Spin’ a rural volunteer taxi service that transported customers to and from country bars free of charge. A well-known community activist, he donated his “Social Spin’ car to the Listry Meals on Wheels service while his pub is shut due to the pandemic. It was during the lockdown that he turned his attention to money saving issues wihin in the pub trade. He came up with the Licensed Premises of Ireland initiative which he hopes will create 10 new jobs across Ireland. Licensed Premises of Ireland (LPOI) will provide services designed to reduce the cost of mainstream utilities for customers. The initiative will start by targeting everyday expenses that weigh heavily on licensed premises, including merchant services, cash handling, gas and electricity. Licensed Premises of Ireland works with individual owners of pubs, restaurants, hotels and nightclubs to analyse their day

to day running costs, and use new partnerships to see those costs reduced. Licensed Premises of Ireland worked with a number of pilot premises during lockdown to identify where value could be achieved, with surprising results. “It is quite fitting that the company chose to launch a year to the day that public houses and Licensed Premises throughout the country were first close,“ said O’Mahony. “The bitter pill to swallow during this crisis, is that I was still paying for services even though my business was closed. Once I reviewed the expenditure for my own bar, I was shocked at some of the costs I was paying to be honest, It costs between €250 and €300 per day for a small pub just to open its doors. Unfortunately, I think I became somewhat complacent over the years and stayed with the same providers and suppliers out of pure convenience. We are excited for the future of Licensed Premises of Ireland and know that we can make a positive difference to the future of the licensed trade.”

COMHGHAIRDEAS: St Brigid’s Students Rebecca Doyle and Saoirse Coffey are champions of the Irish language.

St Brigid’s Students are heroes of the Irish language Two fifth year students at St Brigid’s Secondary School had a double cause for celebration this week after being recognised for their efforts in promoting the use of the Irish language. Rebecca Doyle and Saoirse Coffey have been selected to represent the school in the Kerry finals of the ‘Gael Linn Comórtas Oráide’ speech competition. Hotel bookings worryingly low for summer months Hotel owners in have raised concerns for the season ahead after a new survey revealed that summer bookings are at an all-time low. They have also raised concern at the number of cancelations and have said that through the month of February they had no net new bookings. The Kerry branch of the Irish Hotels Federation has said the sector is effectively at a standstill with no net new bookings as cancellations wipe out any new business. Hotels and guesthouses in Kerry and across the country are now facing enormous uncertainty without much-needed clarity and additional supports from the Government. The IHF has urged the Government to provide a significant increase in sector specific supports for tourism businesses as a matter of urgency with hotels and guesthouses nationally reporting booking levels of just 22% for July and 20% August which are usually the key summer months that act as a lifebuoy for many other months of the year. “The domestic market was very important to the Irish hotel sector last year and we expect that booking levels will improve. However, in the meantime, businesses have to plan. The Government may not be able to provide assurances as to when society will reopen, but they can give much needed certainty and reassurance around business and employee supports. With Kerry hotels facing a prolonged period of closure and related cash burn, this piecemeal approach is hugely frustrating and detrimental for hotels and their teams who, along with the rest of the tourism and hospitality sector, have been disproportionately impacted by Covid restrictions,” said Bernadette Randles, Chair of the Kerry branch of the Irish Hotels Federation. “Specifically, we are seeking increases in payments under the Covid Restrictions Supports Scheme (CRSS) with a doubling of payment amounts irrespective of the level of Covid restrictions as well as removal of the current €5,000 weekly cap. We estimate that 44% of hotel bedroom stock nationally is excluded from CRSS entirely, and this must be resolved as a matter of urgency.” “Enhanced employment subsidies are also necessary. We also ask the Government to intervene with the banks to ensure they have appropriate supports and engagement processes in place for

hotels and their team members until the pandemic has passed. Hotels also require a clear commitment from the Government to retain the 9% tourism VAT rate. Many hotels are already contracting for international business up to two years out. Tourism is highly competitive, yet they have no pricing certainty in relation to the retention of this critically important VAT measure and this could hamper their recovery.” “Hotels are focussed on restoring employment levels as quickly as possible and the best way to ensure that is to support the businesses. It is critical that we get certainty around supports for business recovery. We cannot afford any delay if businesses are to have a fighting chance of survival. Prior to the pandemic, some 15,700 livelihoods were supported by tourism and hospitality here in Kerry with the sector contributing €592 million to the local economy. A severely devastated hotels sector would be a major loss to Kerry’s economy and society for many years to come. This can and must be avoided,” Ms Randles added. The IHF survey was carried out on March 8-10, and the results are based on the response of 303 properties with 31,150 guest rooms spread across the country.

‘Irish Echo’ 40 Under 40 with strong Killarney Roots A New York woman with strong Killarney connections has been named as one of the ‘Irish Echo’ newspaper’s ‘40 under 40’people to watch in 2021

RAINBOWS: The children from Raheen Montessori Playgroup were inspired by a poem called 'The Rainbow Children'.

The parade must go on

Raheen Montessori Playgroup weren’t going to let current restrictions get in their way of enjoying Ireland’s National Holiday. Pupils and staff marked St Patrick’s Day by having their own parade on the grounds of the pre-school. Every January pupils and staff looked forward to an email from the parade committee to inform them of the parade’s theme. Preparations for their involvement would start immediately with great support from the school’s committee members of the wider community. This year Raheen Montessori Playgroup decided to celebrate with their children on site. The children’s parade was based on a theme 'The Rainbow Children'. “We decided on the theme after read-

ing a very beautiful poem called The Rainbow Children written by Gemma Peacock.” Lorena O Connor of Raheen Montessori Playgroup told the Killarney Advertiser. “Local builder Mike Casey came on board as he does every year and constructed a rainbow arch for the children to parade through. The children excitedly decorated the arch with their handmade rainbow crafts in preparation for their big day.” The parade was videoed and aired on the Playgroup's Facebook page at the usual parade start time of 2pm on St. Patrick’s Day.

A graduate of Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute with a Bachelor of Science, Maura was a performer and business manager of the university’s award-winning Acapella group, called the Rusty Pipes. Under her leadership, the group recorded four CD's. When she was younger, Maura played the fiddle and competed twice in the Fleadh Cheoil. Her goal is to install an appreciation of her Irish heritage in her daughters by continuing the tradition of regular trips to Kerry, and to Waterford where her father, Pat Whelan is from. GARDEN MAGIC

Gardening - By Debby Looney

Debby is available for advice and garden consultations, just call 086 6088156 or email barnhillky@gmail.com

Daphne rewards sweetly scented flowers in the middle of winter Weather, it seems, cannot hold nature back. This week the garden saw many new blooms emerge, from my gnarly but delicate, little Prunus ‘kojo no mai’, to the strong growth and yellow blossoms on the forsythia. However there is one shrub which is especially lovely at this time of year, and one which I do not recall ever writing about. This is the small, often overlooked, Daphne. The Daphne flowers early, with vivid purple or pink scented flowers, which are ideal for use as a cut flower indoors, when their scent becomes even stronger. It is an unassuming, tidy shrub the rest of the year, and goes unnoticed in the garden centre among other, more striking plants. However, in March, there is very little which can rival it for interest. Daphnes are not as difficult to grow as some might think – they prefer deep, moist soil, dappled shade and some shelter. They dislike being moved, and should not be bought too pot-bound. Consider where you plant them, or alternatively choose a pot which is deep and large enough to accommodate the plant for several years. If planted in a pot, it is important in very cold weather that its roots do not freeze, and, in very warm weather that it is kept out of direct midday sun. They do not tolerate drought at all. However, if in a pot, it can be positioned in a place where its scent can be appreciated in the winter months! Generally, Daphnes do not grow beyond 1.5m, though most stay around the one metre. They do not take kindly to pruning, being prone to dieback. However, pruning is not often needed as they are slow growing and maintain a neat shape. (Cutting the flowers should be enough to keep them looking well).

I have a D. mezereum which in 15 years has only grown to about two feet… This variety loses its leaves in the winter, and bears its purple flowers on bare stems. It has bright red berries in summer, which are eaten and dispersed by birds, especially thrushes, causing it to appear in odd places! I have learned to let them be, as any which I have transplanted, have failed. D. odora, as the name suggests, has highly fragrant flowers. Their colour ranges from pale pink to carmine. There is a variegated version available also. D. ‘Pink Fragrance’ is a semi evergreen variety, with strongly perfumed light pink flowers. It flowers on new growth, and can be seen bearing flowers at almost any time of the year. It is ideal for low shrubberies, or even large rockeries, as it is very compact. D. bohlua ‘Jacqueline Postill’ is possibly the easiest variety to grow, as it is not too fussy about soil type and position. It rewards shelter and relatively good soil with sweetly scented pink flowers in the middle of winter. There are evergreen varieties available also, though these often have (scented) greenish, inconspicuous flowers. One such variety is D. laureola, which flowers throughout the winter. While Daphnes are a beautiful addition to any garden, it should be noted that all parts are toxic, and many people may develop a rash if the sap is in contact with the skin. Take care when handling it, and please ensure no little hands can reach it.

Community air ambulance called out 590 in first full year | By Sean Moriarty A volunteer with the Irish Community Rapid Response (ICRR) helicopter has raised concerns over fundraising for the vital service as a result of COVID-19 restrictions. The emergency helicopter is funded entirely by charity donations and without Government assistance. In 2020, its first full year of operation, the helicopter attended 590 callouts across 13 different counties. Cork and Kerry are the two busiest counties served by the volunteer service. Fundraiser Donie Lucey, who is well known in the classic car scene in Killarney, explained some of the issues facing the service. “GAA clubs, Macra na Feirme, car clubs, they cannot do anything for us and we rely on their fundraisers,” he told the

Killarney Advertiser. “We have cash boxes in shops, some shops are closed, we can’t get to other shops to collect the money.” Despite all this the ICRR Air Ambulance has seen an increase in a different kind of support. Volunteers, within their 5k, are helping keep the airfield near Millstreet in top shape by giving their time freely to cut grass and paint workshops – something that has increased in COVID-19 times. Meanwhile, Donie, 67, is attempting to walk 10,000 steps a day to raise funds for the helicopter. “It is not easy at my age,” he said. “It was pouring rain the other night – it was so bad you would not put a bucket out – but I had to go.” Search: “Donie's fundraiser for ICRR Air Ambulance” on Facebook to contribute to his efforts.

President Higgin’s St Patrick’s Day message Valentia Island’s Walrus visitor

President Michael D. Higgins

“As our people envisage their emergence from the destructive and debilitating, all-enveloping fog that is the pandemic of COVID-19, as our planet wounded, and in peril from what was a discarded respect for balance, between what might be consumed for the necessities of life and the very capacity of the planet to renew itself, even survive, what then might be an appropriate message from Ireland on the Feast Day of the Patron, Patrick, all of us on the island of Ireland, and Irish people everywhere and those who came to be in the country, might share? “All sources of transcendence and the spirit beyond the misery of the self are important. Our Patron Patrick saw the necessity of placing his message alongside respect for nature, with its right and promise of renewal that was there in indigenous forms of spirituality.

Trump CORNER

Valentia Island had a new visitor this week when a giant walrus was spotted on rocks near the island’s lighthouse.

“On Saint Patrick’s Day 2021, we have been reminded of our shared vulnerability, our interdependence, the need for an understanding that can fly past borders. In the message we have received from COVID, surely there is the undeniable insight that we must all, and together, exit the fog of not only the pandemic but all of the hubris, the arrogance, the vanities of assuming the right to dominate, to impose, to exclude; strategies of life which have left us such a legacy of lost communality and a planet in danger. “We have had the opportunity, since last year in particular, then, to examine the assumptions that have brought upon us

less than the best of ourselves. There is much to be discarded, and we should do so without unnecessary recrimination. Surely we do not need to make war to find peace; and then when we discover a remedy, an insight of science for the avoidance or cure of disease, it must be for the sharing, rather than the hoarding as a commodity for use in aggressive trade competition. “There will be a capacity for joy in our exit from COVID-19, but that joy should be informed by our reflection on the new values we will invoke and practice as we set out on the new journey we undertake together.

Publicity snub wont rest easy with Trump It seems former President Donald Trump’s decision to get vaccinated in secret has come back to haunt him. Last week the Killarney Advertiser reported on how he got a Coronavirus vaccination while still in office. Since then a TV advertising campaign, featuring all the liv-

ing ex-presidents of the United States, except Trump, began airing on US channels. The idea is to encourage more people to get vaccinated and help curb the spread of disease in one of the most badly effected countries in the world. The video began airing on Thursday. The advert shows images of Barack Obama, George W. Bush,

Marine experts believe this is the first sighting of walrus in County Kerry and the last time one was seen in Irish waters was in 2003. The walrus was spotted by local man Alan Houlihan and his five-year-old daughter Muireann while out walking on Sunday morning. “Their normal range is much further north up around North Russia and Greenland. However, this wouldn't be the first time a rogue walrus has been found venturing further south, nevertheless this is a very, very rare occasion, last one seen in Ireland was 2003,” Dingle Aquarium posted on its social media channels.

Government urged to act decisively on Post Offices Postmasters have warned that Government needs to act quickly and decisively to keep Post Offices open, or put access to local banking at further risk. IPU South Western Spokesperson Marie Williams (Rock Street, Tralee Post Office) said that a Government financial intervention must be in place by this June to keep Post Offices open. “The question is who will provide financial services to communities, such as those where Bank of Ireland branches are to close, if Post Offices do not get Government support in time?” Ms. Williams said COVID-19 has made the viability of the hundreds of Post Offices even more challenging – and this would be further compounded by a significant reduction in Postmasters payments rate to take effect from July 1. “The challenge faced is related to the

delay in providing new Government services which have been promised since 2018, but are only now being seriously examined.” Ms. Williams’ comments follow an announcement by the Minister of State for Postal Services Hildegarde Naughton last week to establish a new Inter-Departmental Group to examine directing more Government business to the Post Office Network and to report back at the end of July. “This is too late. There is a cliff-face in front of the Post Office Network that is coming this July. Decisions need to have been made and actions taken before then. “While the IPU welcomes additional banking services which Post Offices will provide, such as following the Bank of Ireland branch closures announcement, this can only happen if there is a Network there to provide it.”

SuperValu Donate 1 Million Hand Sanitisers As the pandemic continues hand hygiene has become more important than ever and hand sanitiser is a vital tool in keeping ourselves safe. Vulnerable people or those without their own home may not have the means to purchase hand sanitiser at all times. SuperValu is to donate over one million hand sanitisers to St. Vincent de Paul and to those living Direct Provision Centres in Ireland with the support of the Irish Refugee Council and Doras. "This extremely generous donation will be of great value to SVP in supporting those who seek our help either through

direct assistance provided by volunteers in conferences throughout the country or used in our hostels and social housing units. Many of those we help struggle on low pay and constantly have to make choices with regard to what bills to pay, or what food or household goods to buy. This donation of hand sanitisers in the current Covid era is very welcome and the logistics of distributing them will be managed through our national retail network. Our sincere thanks to SuperValu for this donation and for the continued support to local SVP Conferences in communities around the country,” said Rose McGowan, SVP National President.

Why UB40’s rally car needs to come to Killarney this year! The recent announcement by the Gleneagle Group and the INEC, that reggae legends UB40 are to play the Killarney venue has uncovered a motoring connection that deserves exploring further. The dark times are coming to an end and the light at the end of the tunnel does not get much brighter than this one. Imagine one of the world’s biggest reggae bands – a band that loves rallying – playing in Killarney a few days before the proposed date for the Rentokil Initial Killarney Historic Rally? Now all of this is very hypothetical of course and no one can predict the future and how Ireland will be coping with vaccines and pandemics by the end of November. But let us just hope that we are back to normal by November 21. Take a week off work. We promise it will be worth it. From Sunday night November 21 to Sat-

urday night November 28, locals and visitors alike will be in for a musical and motorsport treat and very few people will know the connection. UB40 will play in the INEC Arena on November 21. This is one week before the Killarney Historic Rally (assuming it can go ahead and that it does so on its traditional last weekend in November date). In their heyday the Birmingham-based reggae band were one of the greatest supporters of UK rallying. In fact, they sponsored a rally car for the late James Prochowski. And it was no ordinary rally car. It was a Nissan 240RS , the Japanese firm’s answer to the rearwheel drive Group B frontrunners: Opel’s Manta and Ascona. Between 1984 and 1986 Prochowski entered some of the biggest rallies in Europe with the big Nissan that carried UB40 livery. The car is still around. The Eiffel Rally Festival in Germany, like

the Killarney event, is another major European Historic Rally. The German organiser said: “Back in 1984, James Prochowski, the owner of a small tuning garage in Birmingham, bought a Nissan 240RS from ‘Blydenstein Racing Ltd’, Nissan’s semiworks team and exclusive importer of the 240RS in Europe. At that time, the 240RS was an affordable and, on national level, pretty competitive Group B rally car which was popular with private owners thanks to its robust and simple design. “James grew up in the same working-class district of the industrial city of Birmingham as the brothers, Ali and Robin Campbell, frontmen of the reggae band UB40 which was popular worldwide in the 1980s. “The three men had been friends from the cradle. The band chose its name after a form for unemployment aid (Unemployment Benefit – Form No. 40) of the employment bureau of Birmingham and

conquered the charts with their reggae sounds. Therefore, they were financially well off and able to support their childhood friend’s passion for rallying. This is why the car had always been wearing the logos and covers of successful UB40 albums on its body. But the band also profited from Prochowski’s rally endeavours and published numerous PR pictures showing the car and the band.” Prochowski, who sadly passed way in 2006 from Leukaemia, aged just 53, competed in Killarney on one occasion. Back in 1987 he entered a Group N Ford Sierra RS Cosworth in the Carling Rally of the Lakes. His Nissan 240 RS still exists. Could someone from Killarney and District Motor Club make contact and invite the owners to compete on this year’s Historic Rally? Or arrange for some celebrity driver to steer it in Killarney? Donegal legend James Cullen drove this very car on the Goodwood Festival of Speed in recent years… Cullen drove a Nissan 240RS on the Rally of the Lakes in the mid-1980s. He finished second in 1986 and this year marks the 35th anniversary of his best Killarney result. Someone make it happen….

Calls for Barraduff development plan There are calls for a development plan, similar to those announced for Kilcummin at the start of the year, to be implemented in Barraduff. Local councillor Niall Kelleher made the plea at a recent Killarney Municipal District meeting. He wants the support of Kerry County Council so funding can be applied for. He said: “The village needs a plan developed to secure Town and Village Funding. Is there commitment from Kerry County Council to advance this in 2021?” However, the Council said that the onus for developing plans rests with the local community first. “The development of plans in communities is community led. The Municipal District engages with communities on an ongoing basis and has been in contact with Barraduff in relation to the development of a Community Development Plan,” a Kerry County Council official told the meeting.

Active v Passive Investing

WHICH ONE IS RIGHT FOR YOU? Ever since the first passive index fund was unveiled in 1975, the active vs. passive investing debate has been one of Wall Street’s most hotly contested issues. The discussions have become increasingly heated of late as the longest bull market in history saw active managers struggle to outperform their passive counterparts. Endless script touting the relative merits of each is widely available, but ultimately, any final decision on your preferred approach will come down to personal preference. In short, actively managed portfolios try to beat the performance of the market, while passively managed portfolios seek to track or mirror a market index rather than beat it.

significant potential returns given the prevailing market conditions. Investing, however, is far from an exact science. Despite what their underlying analysis may have suggested, active managers can also get it wrong, resulting in market underperformance.

ACTIVE INVESTING

In contrast, passive funds simply look to mimic the performance of a specific index. One of the most common ways to invest passively is to buy index funds. These funds are made up of securities that mirror the securities held within a particular index. Let’s say you purchase a passively managed index fund that

As the name suggests, active investing is a more hands-on investment approach. As part of an actively managed fund, a portfolio manager and his/her team will continuously analyse the market, making changes to a portfolio based on what they believe will bring the most

BENEFITS • Opportunity to outperform the market • Flexible approach to avail of opportunities • Downside protection DRAWBACKS • Higher cost • Less tax efficient • Active risk

PASSIVE INVESTING

mimics the performance of the S&P 500 Index; if the S&P 500 (an index made up of 500 of the largest U.S companies) gains 12% in a year, that index fund should also move 12%. BENEFITS • Lower cost • Hands-off approach • Transparent DRAWBACKS • No downside protection • No opportunity to outperform the market • Lack of flexibility

SO, WHICH IS BETTER?

There seems to be a false dichotomy in place, whereby all active management is viewed as inherently evil, and all passive is preferred or vice versa. The reality is, the choice doesn’t need to be mutually exclusive. A blend of both can allow for a cost-efficient portfolio while still providing some room for outperformance through active management exposure. For example, if you want exposure to the biggest companies in the U.S., you can get that very easily and cheaply through a passive ETF or Index Fund.

Michael O’Connor CFA is an investment consultant based in the Cayman Islands with a decade of experience within the financial industry.

On the other end of the spectrum, active management lends itself well to fixed income strategies and international markets, so if your exposure requirements are somewhat more nuanced, active management may be preferred. Your preferred style may also change over time, depending on your age, goals, net worth, and timeline. When you are younger and less experienced, you may prefer the simplicity of passive investing. With less to invest, low fees and transparency make passive investing a good fit. Suppose your situation is more complex with broader diversification requirements, or you have a higher net worth and are willing to take on more risks for potentially greater return.

The help to buy scheme (HTB) explained If you are a first-time buyer and are thinking about purchasing a new home, you can avail of the Help to Buy incentive.

SO WHAT IS IT?

The Help to Buy scheme is a government initiative designed to help first time buyers raise the money for the deposit on their first home. Under the initiative, you can receive a refund or rebate of Income Tax and Deposit Interest Retention Tax (DIRT)* that you paid over the previous four tax years. How do you qualify for the scheme? In order to qualify for the Help to Buy scheme you must be a first-time buyer purchasing a new home to live in and borrowing at least 70% of the value of the property – cash buyers do not qualify. The cost of the property must be €500,000 or less to qualify for the scheme. There are of course a few caveats: you must not have previously owned a prop-

erty in Ireland or abroad, and if buying with a partner, both of you must be first time buyers. You must also use the property as your primary residence for a minimum of five years. Refer to revenue. ie and follow the steps to see if and how much you might qualify for.

HOW MUCH AM I ENTITLED TO?

This has changed this year. It depends on the cost of the home and the amount of Income Tax / DIRT you have paid over the previous 4 years. The maximum tax refund is now 10% of the value of the property or €30,000 whichever is lower. The rebate is only available on new build properties valued at €500,000 or less. This has been a huge help for first time buyers in recent years in getting their foot on the property ladder when they may have otherwise had to wait a lot longer to own their first home. The great news is that the Help to Buy scheme has

been extended until 31 December 2021. Ready to avail of the Help to Buy scheme? Great! Here is what to do next: 1. B efore you pay a deposit on your new home you must have already applied for the HTB and have received a set of codes from the revenue. These codes will need to be provided to the selling agent before reservation along with your full proof of funds. 2. A booking deposit is paid and your solicitor details are provided to your sales agent. You are now "sale agreed" and contracts are issued to your solicitor. At this stage the booking deposit is fully refundable if you change your mind. 3. O n signing your contracts, you pay the balance of your 10% deposit less the HTB amount you have qualified for, and the initial booking deposit you have paid on reservation. 4. Once the contracts are signed by both the purchasers and the developer and are “exchanged,” your solicitor

will then assist you in uploading your exchanged contract to the revenue using your existing HTB codes. 5. T he revenue will provide you with another set of codes that must be provided to the developer’s solicitor in order for the developer to claim the HTB refund.

Moriarty’s Centra Farranfore marked one year of COVID-19 in Ireland with an act of kindness that has not gone unnoticed by customers. The popular supermarket offered free tea or coffee to every customer who walked in then door on Monday last week – one year to the day after the first COVID-19 case was recorded in the country. The offer was a gesture to all the shop’s customers who had endured some level of difficulty over the last 12 months. It was done without any pre-event publicity so customers who would normally go the shop on a Monday would get the most benefit and without increasing passing trade and potentially breaching current restrictions. Firies man, Leszek Brzozka, better

known as the Duty Manager at the International Hotel in Killarney town centre, was one of the first customers into the shop on Monday morning. "They say that there’s no such thing as a free lunch, well I got my free coffee. No purchase necessary, no likes, no shares, no competition, no hidden agenda. Just a genuine gesture of goodwill from owners of this iconic shop,” he told the Killarney Advertiser. “Mike and his wife Margaret never fail to deliver, and that leadership and culture can be seen in the shop because every member of staff is very professional, chatty and helpful. Simple, but sincere “how’s things going “ accompanied with a big smile, hidden behind the mask these days, but you can tell they smiling by the eyes, it’s so powerful and important especially in these difficult times."

Minister Simon Harris has announced ambitious plans to reform the current system for students applying to college courses, apprenticeships and traineeships as part of a three year strategy published by the Department of Further and Higher Education, Research, Innovation and Science.

Currently students who want to progress to higher education apply through the CAO system while those who want to apply to further education courses (PLCs) and traineeships apply directly to colleges of further education (FE) or through the local Education and Training Board (ETB). For students who are interested in apprenticeships they can apply directly to the employer or industry partner and also link in with the ETB and SOLAS. Concerns have repeatedly been raised about the fact that students at 17 or 18 years of age may be limiting their options too early so it is hoped that under the new scheme applicants will be more aware of the broader range of opportunities available to them and see the value of skills and work-based training. The plan also seeks to develop the opportunities for people to progress from one level to another in education and training. New centralised portal While the detail of how the process will work is still be worked out, a key change planned is the development one platform where students and adults will be able to apply for college courses in higher education and further education, as well as traineeships and apprenticeships in one single portal. This will certainly make it easier for applicants to look at all the options available to them and enable them to make an informed decision about which one suits them best. The other big change planned is the creation of a single cred-

it system which will make it easier to move on from further education and training (FET) courses. In recent years there has been a big increase in students progressing from FE courses onto higher education through the Higher Education Links Scheme. The plan to create a single credit system will greatly enhance options for students by having clearer pathways of progression from these FE courses, and also traineeships and apprenticeships, into courses in Higher Education Institutions (HEIs). It remains to be seen how the system will look in reality but the planned reform is ground-breaking. It is hoped that more students of all ages will see the benefits apprenticeships, traineeships and FET courses which in turn will ensure a focus is maintained on the skills needed in the current and future world of work.

How to Lose Fat “Right Here” Over the years, clients have pointed to every single body part and said, “I want to lose fat right here.” Here are a few of the most common areas: the stomach, the hips/butt and the “wobble under the arm.” I’ll tell you exactly to lose fat in any of those parts—and anywhere else, for that matter. Here’s the deal: You can’t actually target fat loss in a specific body part. I know you’ll see all sorts of ads for products that say you can “burn off belly fat” or “tone your legs,” but these are empty promises. No magic pill, lotion, wrap or diet can target fat loss in one place. The truth is that you must change your nutrition and lifestyle habits to reduce overall body fat. Your body will decide where the fat is lost, but if you lose fat in general, you’ll improve problem areas, too. You can double down on that process by building a bit of muscle. We aren’t talking bulky, bulging bodybuilder muscle. We’re talking about very small increases. You won’t ever suddenly become “bulky”—but that’s a myth for another time.

OUR FAT-LOSS PROGRAM

So how do you use nutrition and fitness to reduce body fat and build muscle? Well, there are lots of ways to do it. We’ll tell you how we do it, and we guarantee it works! (Don’t take our word for it. Feel

free to ask any of our clients!) We use nutrition coaching along with a combination of cardiovascular training and strength training to build effective habits, increase the calories you burn and build muscle. So that means we don’t just run for 30 minutes or just lift weights for 3 sets of 8. Our coaches create programs that are perfectly designed to help clients accomplish goals. Sometimes, a single workout might have two parts: one “cardio” element and one strength element. Other times, we might blend cardio and strength training together. That might look something like this: Do 5 barbell back squats at a certain weight and then run 200 meters—repeat 5 times. Sometimes we do focus on either strength or conditioning in a single session. But overall, we focus on both! The end result? You get stronger and build a little muscle. And you burn calories and body fat. Do this regularly, and you’re going to begin to see some muscle definition. No, your abs won’t instantly pop out. That might be a long-term goal. But you will notice that clothes start to fit better, and you’ll be able to see some visible changes. You’ll also be able to see clear progress in your workout log. So,think about the spot you want to lose fat. Your “right here.” Now visit our website (www.activate.ie) and talk to us. We’ll make a plan for you and tell you exactly how you can lose fat everywhere!

KNOW YOUR RIGHTS

Shopping online from the UK after Brexit QUESTION: I ordered something online from a UK website – will I have to pay extra charges when it arrives? ANSWER: From January 1, 2021, you may have to pay extra tax when having your online shopping delivered from the UK (this does not include Northern Ireland). This is because the UK has left the European Union (Brexit) and the transition period that was in place ended on December 31, 2020. Depending on the item’s value and where it was made (place of origin), you may have to pay: Value Added Tax (VAT) Customs duty HOW WILL I KNOW IF I OWE THESE TAXES?

If your package is valued at €22 or less (including the transport, insurance and handling costs), you do not have to pay any VAT or customs duty. However, if your package is valued at €23 or more (including the transport, insurance and handling costs), you have to pay VAT. The standard rate of VAT for most items bought in Ireland is 21%. If the items were made in the UK and are valued at €150 or more (not including transport, insurance and handling charges), you do not have to pay customs duty. However, if the items were not made in the UK and are valued at €150 or more (excluding transport, insurance and handling charges), you may have to pay customs duty. The amount of customs duty you pay depends on the type of product you buy. You should be aware that the value limits are for the whole delivery, not just one item.

HOW DO I PAY THESE CHARGES, AND WHO DO I PAY THEM TO?

You may have already paid Irish VAT and customs duty during the checkout stage of your online purchase. This is because some UK retailers are registered with Revenue and automatically charge the relevant taxes as part of the purchase. Check your receipt (this is usually sent to

you by email) to see if you have already paid Irish VAT or customs duty. If the UK business is not registered with Revenue, the postal service or courier will send you a bill before delivering your package. This is because the postal service or courier completes all the relevant customs declarations, including where the product is manufactured. You will usually be charged an administration fee for this service, which can be a minimum of €10 to €15.

ARE THERE ANY OTHER CHANGES TO MY CONSUMER RIGHTS WHEN I BUY FROM THE UK?

As a result of Brexit, there are changes to your consumer rights when buying online from businesses in the UK. You will still have consumer rights but they will be set down in UK law and not EU law. It is very important to check the terms and conditions on the seller’s website to find out your rights around: • Returning the item if you change your mind • Cancelling the item before it is dispatched • Complaining if something goes wrong Read more about buying online from the UK after Brexit, including what to do if things go wrong. IN MEMORIAM

19.3.2021 ACKNOWLEDGEMENT & 1ST ANNIVERSARY O’REGAN

In loving memory of Mikey Joe O’Regan late of Meenagishaugh, Gneeveguilla who passed away on March 21st 2020 aged 83 years. As we lovingly remember Mikey Joe on his first anniversary , his wife Laura & son’s Dermot, Fred, Anthony, Adrian & Mike. Mike’s partner Deirdre & his grandsons , Mikey D, James & Kai & his extended family wish to express our sincere thanks & appreciation shown to us during that difficult time. As Mikey Joe’s demise occurred at the start of the Covid 19 pandemic it was a very different funeral to what we would have imagined for him. As his funeral mass was limited to 50 people we would like to thank our extended family , friends and neighbours who lined the route from our family home to the church of the Holy Rosary in Gneeveguilla. A special word of thanks to our neighbours Nealie, Joan, Vincent & Michelle Warren who provided nourishment & practical support to us during those first few days. We would also like to thank Fred & Mary Connell & Irene Cremin who helped out with catering at the family home. Their help was invaluable that weekend. A heartfelt thank you to Father Pat O Donnell & Father Pat Mc Carthy for visiting the family home and giving us comfort in our hour of need. For the beautiful funeral mass in which they celebrated Mikey Joes life. To the musicians who provided music at the church and at the grave side including Timmy & Margaret O ‘Connor & Vincent Warren. To the readers and those who did the offertory Helene O Connor, Norma Lucey, Catherine Anne Murphy & Deirdre Byrne. It would be remiss of us not to mention the care that Dad received in Kerry University Hospital on his many admissions during his final years. Mikey Joe also attended St Joseph’s Day care centre in Rathmore on a daily basis from November 2018 until October 2019 where he received exemplary care and gave our family much needed respite. When Mikey Joes care became untenable at home he secured a bed in The Fuscia ward in St Columbanus’s Killarney for the last five months of his life. The staff here treated him with great dignity & we were happy in the knowledge that he was receiving expert care and this gave us great comfort & relief. Sincere thanks to all those who sent Mass cards, Sympathy cards, numerous texts, phone calls and e mails. A special word of thanks to our funeral director Sean Mahoney who under different circumstances conducted a service under the government Covid 19 guidelines. A difficult task that was implemented with ease. Mikey Joe lived a long and happy life & touched the lives of many. We miss him every day. To all those we have mentioned & anybody we may have mistakenly missed out on a mass will be offered for your intentions with our heartfelt thanks and gratitude. Look around your garden lord And when he turns and smiles Put your arm around him And hold him for a awhile Anniversary Mass on Sunday 21st March at 11.30am at St Joseph’s Church, Rathmore which can be watched remotely through the webcam @ www.rathmoreparish.ie.

JESUS May your Sacred Heart Lord Jesus, be praised, glorified and honoured throughout the whole world now and forever. Repeat this 3 times.

NOVENA TO THE SACRED HEART

O Holy Spirit, you who solve all problems, light all roads so that I can attain my goal. You gave me the divine gift to forgive and forget all evil against me and that in all instances of my life you are with me. I want in this short prayer to thank you for all things you have given me as you confirm once again that I never wanted to be separated from you in spite of all material illusions. I wish to be with you in Eternal Glory. Thank you for mercy towards me and mine. This prayer must be said for three days, after three days the favour will be granted. EOS

Always patient, caring and true, I will always love and remember you Sadly, missed by your daughter Mary, Denis, Aoife, Eimear, Caoimhe & Laoise. We think of you in silence We often speak your name But all we have are memories And your picture in a frame. MARY MALONE’S PRAYER FOR HEALING Heavenly Father, I call on you right now in a special way. It is through your power that I was created. Every breath I take, every morning I wake, and every moment of every hour, I live under your power. Father, I ask you now to touch me with that same power. For if you created me from nothing you can certainly re-create me. Fill me with the healing power of your spirit. Cast out anything that should not be in me. Mend what is broken. Root out any damaged cells. Open any blocked arteries or veins and rebuild any damaged cells. Remove all inflammation and cleanse any infection. Let the warmth of your healing love pass through my body to make new any unhealthy areas so that my body will function the way you created it to function. And Father, restore me to full health in mind and body so that I may serve you the rest of my life. I ask this through Christ Our Lord. Amen.EOS

Five Dr Crokes, five Legion and five Spa... How would this combined Killarney parish team fare in the Kerry SFC? Football fans in many large towns all over the country come together behind a single GAA club, but the situation in Killarney is much different. We have three teams in our parish, and the rivalries between the respective outfits are amongst the fiercest and most intense in Kerry football. But what would happen if we had just one club, ‘Killarney GAA’, to cater to the community? How would our combined senior football team look? This week we tasked our readers with selecting an All-Killarney Dream Team comprised of five players from each club (Dr Crokes, Legion and Spa). The exercise proved to be a challenge; a testament, no doubt, to the uncommonly high number of talented footballers we have in our midst. Some excellent line-ups were submitted and the votes were tallied. The final team is stacked with distinguished veterans, young bucks, intercounty stars, and county champions. Former Kerry keeper Brian Kelly just about pipped his Dr Crokes counterpart, Shane Murphy, for the No. 1 jersey with three of Kelly’s clubmates, Cian Gammell, Danny Sheahan and Jonathan Lyne, getting the nod ahead of him in defence. Experienced Dr Crokes defender Fionn Fitzgerald makes the team at corner back with clubmate Gavin White at centre back,

and Spa’s Dan O’Donoghue (captain of the current county champions, East Kerry) slots in at left half back to complete a very strong and highly-skilled back six. It’s an all-Spa midfield where the versatile Shane Cronin is joined by club and district teammate Liam Kearney. The half forward line is blessed with intercounty-calibre talent as Legion’s James O’Donoghue is selected alongside Johnny Buckley and Micheál Burns, both of Dr Crokes. Two of the deadliest forwards in the county, Tony Brosnan (Dr Crokes) and Evan Cronin (Spa and East Kerry), join forces in the full forward line alongside Dara Moynihan, who would likely be tasked with foraging out the field, as he does to great effect for club, district and county. James O’Donoghue and Evan Cronin were universal picks with Tony Brosnan, Dara Moynihan, Gavin White and Dan O’Donoghue also making the vast majority of our readers’ teams. This remarkably strong selection could be backed up by the likes of the aforementioned Shane Murphy (Dr Crokes), Podge O’Connor (Legion), Brian Looney (Dr Crokes), Conor Keane (Legion) and Michael Foley (Spa), who were the next-highest vote-getters for their respective clubs. What do you think? Did our readers get it right?

Silence at the Eamonn Fitzgerald laments the decline of handball, the once popular sport that entertained generations of Killarney people

No one shouted ‘stop’. Not my phrase, but that pithy gem came to me when I was walking by St Finan’s Hospital recently, or more specifically viewing the old handball alley, deserted now just like the one in the Old Mon. No longer does one hear or see groups of young people sinking those much-practiced butt shots which bamboozled many an opponent. John Healy, the well-known journalist with the Irish Times newspaper, used the near deserted handball alley in his native Charlestown, County Mayo as a striking image of what he wrote about in ‘The Death of an Irish Town’, published with that title in 1968. He wanted to use the title ‘No One Shouted Stop’, but the publishers intervened. They had their way, but Healy wrote it as he saw it. That was his style, writing the popular Backbencher column in the Irish Times. He was the best political columnist up until his death in 1991. The Death of an Irish Town is a very short book, less than 100 pages, but he saw what was happening in rural Ireland from the late 50s/ early

60s. He returned to his native town on some weekends, away from the bustling overpopulated Dublin, where he worked. His description of a lone man, real or imaginary, it matters little, tossing the ball in the handball alley in his hometown of Charlestown and listening to the dull hollow sound of the ball coming back to him. There was no one there to return the serve. Alone, all alone on the Western front; the scourge of emigration was haemorrhaging the very life out of rural Mayo. Healy knew Charlestown as a busy country town and so did Seán Griffin, my long-time friend and fellow sports aficionado. I spoke to Seán earlier this week and he recalled growing up in the Charlestown area in the 50s and mid60s.

THE GASÚR FROM COPPLE CURRAGH

“I remember the handball alley in Charlestown very well indeed. As young gasúrs we gathered there, particularly at the weekends, and spent hours upon hours playing each other in

friendly games. Sometimes, they weren’t friendly, they were very competitive. You played against maybe your best friend and friendship was put on hold temporarily if it came to 18-20. Could you sink that butt to clinch the game, or was there one last return in him? “There was always a crowd there and we took no notice of waiting for our turn to play. The doubles were also very challenging. That changed in Charlestown with emigration and migration.” That was the way it was in the busy Old Mon alley in the 50s, until the pupils transferred to the New Mon at its present location on New Road. You could not wait for the 11am sos to launch an alley cracker. The Presentation Brothers were so generous providing cuts of bread, well covered with red jam and the steaming hot cocoa for our lunches. Cordon bleu, eat your heart out. More like sustenance for those great sporting rivalries to be settled on the handball alley right there in the clós. There were some great handball players in the Mon. More mature readers

of this column will be able to list them off. If any of you readers remember the names of great handball players in the Old Mon, please email their names to sport@killarneyadvertiser.ie for inclusion in next week’s edition of Handball Part 2. Dan Dwyer, that encyclopaedic minded sportsman, will surely recall some. At that time, players were allowed by rule to drop-kick the ball as well as using the hands, ideal for perfecting the drop-kick in Gaelic football, which is gone out of the modern game. When did you last see a drop-kick in football? Probably Donie O’Sullivan at intercounty level or Gerald Cullinane at club level. They were expert exponents of that skill. Remember Michael O’Hehir’s commentaries: “And he times his drop kick perfectly, sending a long relieving clearance directly down to his forwards and... We have a shemozzle on the edge of the parallelogram.”

THE SEM ALLEYS

There were four wonderful handball alleys in St Brendan’s College; this was

handball alley the big step-up for the plebs, in particular. Now you had a back wall and a whole new skill to perfect. How could you judge the hop of the ball, when it was injudicious to drop-kick it, an instead letting it come off the back wall, slamming it low to the bottom lefthand corner. Timing was everything and one also had to take into account the quality of the ball. A new ball with the high bounce was a rarity. Most likely it was second-hand, or third-hand from O’Meara’s Shop down the Conc (the Concrete, St Mary’s Terrace). That alley cracker didn’t bounce too high. I learned from brilliant exponents of the back-wall skill. A few spring to mind. Brian Mac (McCarthy), Pat Harrington, POM (Con Riordan) and Behan (Tony Behan), who was a winner in the colleges competitions. Later in life he returned to the Sem as principal of the college. One must never forget the exploits of Michael Madden and Seán O’Leary of Rock Road (brother of Sargey). They won the All-Ireland Senior Handball Colleges Doubles in 1958, a wonderful

achievement. Both have passed on, go gcúitítear a saothar leo. Seán emigrated to the States and Michael ministered as a priest abroad. How many readers of this sports column know that handball was a thriving sport in Killarney from the end of the 19th century, when the GAA Convention introduced a Handball Championship? Keen rivalry developed between Killarney, Valentia, Kanturk and Tralee, of course, which produced the best handball player of them all: Fr Jones. He was never beaten, winning the Irish title in 1888 and also in 1889, when he came from Tralee to the Sem for just one year to further his vocation and call to the priesthood.

BRAVO SPA

The good news is that handball is once again thriving around Ireland, including Charlestown and here in Killarney I am delighted to see Spa continuing the great handball tradition in Killarney. As with all sports, games evolve, as is the case with handball. By in large the game has gone indoors, a very sensible

move considering the vagaries of the Irish weather. Spa are making full use of their magnificent hall/clubhouse, incorporating splendid handball courts. The Spa Handball Club opens its doors to all of East Kerry, not alone for adult handballs, but also for juveniles. It caters for males and females. Great work here in Spa by enthusiast Mike Casey (the returned, affable Yank, who played the game in California). Like so many emigrants, such as those from Charlestown, they carried the Irish tradition of handball to their adopted countries. Tadhg O’Sullivan and Deirdre O’Sullivan-Darcy are also key workers in the Spa drive to develop handball, specifically mentioned by Dr Croke in his 1884 vision to ensure it was central to the promotion of the GAA.

FR KIERAN

Fr Kieran, your enthusiastic administrator for Killarney Parish and a keen Rockies supporter (the street of champions) did great work for handball when he was working in the parish of Baile an

Fheirtéaraigh and was so happy to see a 40x20 handball court built at An Ghaeltacht GAA club. Eilís Luing is the main contact for the handball back west. More on handball in next week’s issue as we recall Ball Alley Lane, Kerry All-Ireland handball heroes such as Fr Tom Jones, the McEllistrim brothers, Paddy Downey, Mickey Walsh, Sandy McSwiney and Dominick Lynch, one of my heroes, still going strong on the Masters’ circuit. He contemplated giving up the game in 2001, when the Kerry Handball Board, under the aegis of Kerry GAA, slapped a six-month suspension on him for flouting the sponsorship guidelines. Adam Moynihan highlighted this very subject in recent editions of the Killarney Advertiser. Mick O’Dwyer found a way out of it; Dominick didn’t. Some hurlers use handball alleys to keep their eyes in and first touch welltuned preparing for games. Can the silent handball alleys become alive again in Killarney? Can the sliotars overcome the silence in Charlestown that John Healy wrote about in 1968?

Resurgent Bale top pick for Week 29 With just four Premier League fixtures taking place this weekend, options are limited for FPL managers in Gameweek 29.

Blues earn prestigious FAI ‘One Star’ award

Killarney Athletic have become the first soccer club in Kerry to receive the FAI’s prestigious One Star Player Development Centre Award. This new status, which is one level up from the Club Mark status attained by the Blues in 2020, is granted to grassroots clubs who exhibit best practice in their governance, management, and administration. Athletic are now one of a small number of clubs nationwide to have reached this stage of the FAI’s Club Development programme. “We at Killarney Athletic are proud and delighted to announce that following on from our success achieving the FAI Club Mark Entry Level last year, we have now been awarded the FAI Club Mark One Star Development Centre Award,” chairperson Gerardine Nagle said.

“This is a great testament to everyone that loves the Blues, and the hard work and dedication from our committee, coaches, parents and our players who have all played their part in securing this award. “The Club Mark scheme is a great incentive by the FAI to help clubs reach their highest potential in the categories of club governance and administration; child welfare, safeguarding and coach education; club player development plan; club coaching structure; and engagement with FAI programmes. “All of the above helps promote the future development of all our players. “Special thanks to the FAI’s Colin, Barry, Ross and Niall and to our own Development Officer, Darren Aherne, for all of the help and support. “A great day for the Blues.”

One candidate worthy of consideration is Tottenham Hotspur’s in-form winger Gareth Bale, who looks to be back to his best ahead Sunday’s trip to Birmingham to face Aston Villa. “Bale had struggled for form after arriving on loan from Real Madrid last summer - he started just two of Spurs’ first 24 matches, producing only one goal and one assist,” the FPL Scout says. “But he has since started each of their last four, scoring four goals and providing one assist. The Welshman has carried that form into Spurs’ UEFA Europa League matches, producing two goals and an assist in his last three outings. “Recent hauls of 19 and 14 points against Burnley and Crystal Palace respectively highlight Bale's potential as a key captaincy option. Indeed, his revival in Fantasy has made a huge impact on the plans of managers. He was the most-bought player for Gameweek 28, transferred into 540,000+ squads. Bale is again the top target ahead of Friday’s 6.30pm deadline, attracting more than 179,000 new owners. “The underlying numbers further highlight his impact on Spurs' attack. Bale’s 10 shots, six shots in the box and five shots on target all rank second for Jose Mourinho's men over the last four gameweeks. He now faces an Aston Villa side who have struggled in defence recently, conceding against Sheffield

Gooch joins Crokes backroom team From mascot, to corner forward, to greatest ever player. And now, to mentor. Colm Cooper’s role with the Dr Crokes senior team has changed once again with the news that he will be joining Edmund O’Sullivan’s backroom team for the forthcoming season. Gooch has come on board as a selector alongside former teammates Eoin Brosnan and Jamie Doolan as O’Sullivan puts the finishing touches on his sideline set-up ahead of what will be his third campaign at the helm. Dr Crokes

reached the final of the Kerry Senior Football Championship in O’Sullivan’s first year in charge before losing to East Kerry. Last year also ended in disappointment as they exited at the semi-final stage following an extra-time defeat to Mid Kerry. Cooper brings with him a wealth of experience following a glittering playing career that included five All-Irelands, eight County Championships and a Club All-Ireland in 2017. The Ardshanavooley native stepped away from intercounty football in 2017 and club football in 2019,

His commitments with the first team might limit his opportunities to extend his playing career with the Cs (if and when County League football resumes) as the club’s A, B and C fixtures can sometimes clash.
