Killarney doctor plans to join next week’s national GP protest

A Killarney doctor, who says the health service is in crisis, plans to take part in a major protest with hundreds of other GPs outside the Dáil next week. Dr Michael Moloney from Killarney Medical Centre, says GPs are stressed out, overworked, and working with limited Government resources. The National Day of Action by GPs, which is being organised by the National Association of GPs (NAGP), will take place almost a week after thousands of nurses nationally, including 400 in Kerry, went out on strike. NAGP says years of successive cuts in Government funding for general practice have created an inefficient unstructured health system which is now collapsing. For months they say the Government promised to reverse the 38 percent FEMPI cuts to GPs imposed over past years - and to offer - and properly fund a new, modernised GP contract - but these things have not yet materialised. They also say that the number of doctors who can no longer take on any more patients is a growing crisis, and that the medical card system can no longer cope - having been starved of Government resources. Not enough new doctors are being appointed by the State to serve the public, they say, and many are having to retire early, due to burnout. The future survival of the GP service is vital to enable it to serve patients and the issue affects whole communities around Ireland, explained Dr Moloney, who set up his practice seven years ago, with Dr O’Doherty. Both are hoping to attend next week’s protest - but say unless they can

Local business named ‘Best Hostel in Ireland’ Dr Michael Moloney from Killarney Medical Centre says the health care service is in crisis and he plans to join the National Day of Action by GPs outside the Dáil next Wednesday. source a locum for cover - it might not be possible as their practice is just too busy. “The issue here is that the NAGP have called for a national day of protest amongst GPs in relation to the working environment and the stresses put on general practice,” Dr Moloney told the Killarney Advertiser. “You can ask any GP across the country about the impact the successive cuts have had - you’ll hear the same thing from everyone.” He said that he personally works up to 80 to 90 hours per week in order to accommodate patients, take care of paperwork and fulfil his contracted SouthDoc hours. “The GP service is in crisis and has been for a long time,” Dr Moloney, who worked a full day Tuesday, covered his SouthDoc hours Tuesday night and returned to his practice Wednesday morning, said. “I’m in strong solidarity with my nursing colleagues - but the same thing is going on with GPs for years. The real-

ity is that this is unsustainable. What we need is to be resourced. It’s a big problem.” “We have a contract that’s not fit for purpose it’s over 40 or 50 years old.” Currently, he explained, doctors receive approximately €46 per year for a patient with a medical card, and that same patient has unlimited visits. “As a private businesses we take up the slack in what’s provided by the Government. You break that down, €46 - divided by 12 is €3 to €4 a month to look after a patient with unlimited visits. You couldn’t insure a pet for €40 a year – it just makes no sense. “The reality is that this is unsustainable in this current climate. You can’t provide a service to patients like that.” GPs are retiring younger, he added, while practices are also closing down and communities are left without a GP service as newly trained doctors are instead opting to move abroad to work less hours for higher pay. “We train about 180 in Ireland per year and they are exporting half of them.”

INMO nurses and midwives pictured outside University Hospital Kerry (UHK) on Wednesday. 37,000 nurses and midwives took to the picket line outside hospitals and HSE facilities nationwide. They’re demanding pay increases and Government action on staff shortages.

Killarney's first eco adventure hostel has this week been named ‘Best Hostel in Ireland’. Hostelworld, the world's leading hostel-focused online booking platform, revealed The Black Sheep Hostel in New St., as the national winners following their HOSCARs public vote based on what it says are around one million reviews of 35,000 properties which are compiled annually. The Black Sheep Hotel, a newly renovated 150 year old Georgian building, is situated in the heart of Killarney town. It was opened almost three years ago by Kevin Leahy, was featured on RTE’s at ‘At Your Service’ last year and has won local business awards. As well as providing accommodation to travellers, they also help to organise trips around Kerry such as boat trips on Killarney’s lakes, guided walks up the highest mountain in Ireland, and bus tours around the famous Ring of Kerry. It is run by a nice group of locals and international travellers, Kevin explained. “It has an eco-friendly ethos and strives to help travellers find adventure they are seeking,” he told the Killarney Advertiser. “2018 was a great year for the hostel. We’d like to say a huge thanks to everyone involved. 2019 promises to be even more exciting and fun, with some interesting projects in the pipeline.”

New role for Sean Taaffe

A local business man has this week been appointed President of the Hairdressing Council of Ireland. Sean Taaffe from Killarney, who runs three salons in Killarney Tralee and Killorglin, a barbershop in Killarney town and an education company, said this week that he’s honoured and fully committed to his new role. The Hairdressing Council is the largest and leading industry body in the country and represents the totality of the industry. Sean is one of the Council members

1.02.2019 on the Apprenticeship Steering Group for the New Hairdressing Apprenticeship to be launched later this year. This week he told the Killarney Advertiser that he plans to fulfil the promise of change and further development of the hairdressing industry. "I’m delighted to take on the role of president of the council,” Sean said. “These are challenging times in hairdressing between the VAT rate increasing, which we will continue to lobby the Government on, and the lack of people joining the industry which is something I really want to change. Also the apprenticeships which we have been working on since last March, I would really like to see this implemented during my term as president.” Sean started out as a one person operator and currently has a team of 65 peo-

Guests enjoy night at the annual Skal International Dinner It was a glittering social occasion in Killarney on Saturday night at the annual Skal International Dinner. 85 people from the travel and tourism sectors sat for dinner at the Plaza Hotel which was hosted by Skal Club of Kerry President, Sheila Casey. Also in attendance were Margaret Cahill, National President of Skal, Michael Lennon, President of the Irish Hotels’ Federation, Niamh O’Shea, Chair of the Kerry branch of the Irish Hotels’ Federation, Bishop of Kerry, Ray Browne, and Michael Rosney, who MC’d on the night.

Special guests on the night set the mood for the occasion as the highly popular St Brendan’s Music Group – who last week clocked up to 2.5m online views with their impromptu music on a Ryanair flight from Stansted to Kerry – entertained with a rendition of ‘Step It Out Mary’ before the dinner at 8.30pm. Also, two very special guests were honoured on the night, Sean O’Driscoll, Chief Operating Officer of The iNua Hotel Collection and immediate past National President Skal ROI, who previously worked as manager in the Brehon and Muckross Hotels. And Terence Mulcahy, immediate past Chairman of the Kerry Branch of the Irish Hotels Federation, who only recently re-

ple in his five businesses in Kerry. Never one to stand still, Sean is currently completing his second year in Professional Business Development at University Limerick to further enhance his salon and educational company. In competition, The Sean Taaffe Salon Group is no stranger to winning awards having won Munster Salon of the Year and Salon of the Year in the Alfaparf and Schwarzkopf Business Awards. Sean has represented Ireland many times at world level bringing home Bronze medals from the OMC World Championships in Frankfurt and the OMC Asia Cup Open in Malaysia in the fashion Cut & Colour categories. Last year he became a Juror for OMC World Hairdressing Championships in Paris. He is also proud to be a Trainer for the Alfaparf Hair Company in Precision Haircutting.

tired from his position as General Manager of The International Hotel. “The boys gave a rousing performance,” Geraldine Rosney said. “It was a wonderful way to start the evening and set the tone for the night. Peter Bellew of Ryanair was delighted to meet the boys and congratulated them saying that they were wonderful ambassadors for their school, Killarney, Kerry and Ireland.” And she added that they were delighted to recognise the wonderful work both Terence and Sean have done for the local tourism industry. Guests enjoyed a beautiful meal, including starters consisting of confit of rare breed pork belly with crispy pork cheek and spiced carrot puree or yellow fin tuna ceviche with buttermilk foam avocado, yuzu and puffed wild rice, spiced chickpea and ham hock soup with chorizo oil. Main course included a choice was fillet of Irish Angus beef with grilled foie gras, shimeji mushroom, crispy salsify and roasted garlic jus or wild Atlantic halibut with fried Cromane oyster, golden raisin, cucumber and sea asparagus. While dessert was a selection of Irish artisan cheese, followed by Plaza sweet petit fours, including vanilla marshmallow, Turkish Delight, Dingle Whiskey truffles and orange cake. “The Plaza did a wonderful job on the night,” Geraldine said.

Christmas in Killarney cost in the region of €50,000 to run

A spectacular array of events lined up as part of the 2018 Christmas in Killarney festival, which ran from late November to early January, generated a staggering level of revenue for the town, it has been confirmed. A full review conducted by Killarney Chamber of Tourism and Commerce, which heard from the key players involved in the festive celebrations, received hugely positive feedback from on-the-ground local operators across a wide range of commercial interests. “There were lots of good soundbites and stories to report which is why we thought we would take the opportunity to hear of the successes and how it was for everybody,” Paul Sherry, Chamber President, said. He said the gathering, held in the Killarney Avenue Hotel, explored the triumphs and scoped out new opportunities. “We wanted to distinguish between hearsay and reality, and we invited everybody along to tell us their Christmas stories to help us to plan for 2019.” The Chamber chief said from as early as late November, it was becoming clear that a good strong performance for December was on the cards as the first Christmas in Killarney parade, on Saturday, November 25, was the best in many years. “The word on the street was that the bars were busier, the restaurants were going well, and the accommodation providers were flat out at the weekends. There were positive sounds emanating from retailers against a backdrop of neu-

tral growth across the rest of the country,” he said. Giving an example, Paul said in his own place of employment – Killarney Outlet Centre– there was a four percent rise in visitors, to 140,222 in December than in the previous year. “Retail sales were generally in line with this for the month of December but there were some exceptional increases reported, some as high as 12 percent. I am sure many retailers will agree that in the last 10 years anything that was preceded with a plus sign was very welcome news indeed,” he said. Separately, in November, a Christmas Craft and Food Fair attracted 11,000 customers to the centre - in one day alone. Strategically placed counters for the Killarney Municipal District revealed that the estimated footfall for the peak Christmas holiday period, from December 21 to January 6 showed a 20 percent increase on the same period the previous year. “Just to show the influence of bad weather, when we looked at December 15 in isolation, which was a day of very heavy rain, the footfall fell from 26,000 in 2017 to 7,000 in 2018, a drop of 19,000,” Paul said. Christmas in Killarney Festival Chairperson, Kate O’Leary, said the event, now in its 14th year, costs in the region of €50,000 to run and it has bounced back from financial stress two years ago with some new additions for 2018. But while the festival is now back in the black, she stressed that generating the finance required is “a constant uphill battle”.

Pictured at the event from left: Paul O'Neill, Mike Buckley, Danielle Favier and Johnny Maguire. Photo: Don MacMonagle “It is also time to forge ahead, really improve the offering and stay ahead of all of the towns that are trying to do what we do – but we know we can do it better,” Kate remarked. She lauded the great voluntary effort that is made, with up to 100 people and 16 schools lending a hand in some capacity. “Footfall on the streets was phenomenal each weekend and enquiries about parade times and routes from visitors was constant. What was particularly interesting is that retailers reported trade was, in many ways, better in the weeks after Christmas which is a testament to Killarney as a destination rather than pre-Christmas as an intense shopping period,” Kate added. Analysis of the festival’s social media platform showed that 490,000 people viewed its Facebook posts and almost 50,000 on Twitter, the majority of whom were women. “We definitely need to up our game significantly and that takes time and money. We have seen how lack of funding and support has been the death knoll of festivals in the past and we do not want to go back to this,” she warned.

'There’s a strong Christmas in Killarney brand we must build on it’ A tour operator whose company organised the Christmas in Killarney jarvey sleigh rides, from December 1 to January 6, said a very interesting factor this year was that more customers were overnighting as opposed to taking day trips and it was becoming a tradition to visit Killarney as opposed to the cities. “Business was up by 25 percent with nearly 5,000 people, and people seemed to have more spending power,” Michael Tangney said. “We found a lot of repeat custom as well as new business. “Now that there’s a strong Christmas in Killarney brand we must build on it,” he added. Anthony Walsh, of the Chamber’s Retail Committee, said the feedback is that the grocery trade was up three percent at Christmas and the High Street retailers reported hikes ranging from three to 12 percent. “Most retailers in Killarney were reasonably pleased with Christmas 2018 with results ranging from - 4 percent to +12 percent, depending on the various sectors. Killarney punched above its weight relative to other similar sized towns nationally, Anthony said. “The Christmas in Killarney festival is crucial to creating footfall and a very unique experience for shoppers,” he added. The Killarney on Ice experience, which ran from November 30 to January 6, conducted a survey of its visitors and ascertained that three out of every four came from outside Killarney and groups ranged from two people to 21. “95 percent of those surveyed said they would not have come to Killarney if it were not for the ice rink. Nine out of 10 visitors stayed in town to shop or eat afterwards, and 97 percent said they would return again,” said Killarney on Ice director Tim O’Donoghue. People visited from 18 different countries and from all around Ireland but, he said, for an ice rink to succeed it must be situated in a town centre. Access to parking was an issue but, Tim insisted that ‘we are much better off with a parking issue than a visitor issue’.

In total 77 hotels and tourist attractions won awards, with 13 overall category winners being awarded a Gold Award. Cahernane House Hotel is celebrating after being awarded A Gold Excellence Award and the status of ‘Best 4 Star Hotel’ in Ireland; Killeen House Hotel won the Special Dinner Feature category while Killarney Horse & Carriage Tours won the Best Tour Feature category. In addition, merit awards were presented to nine hotels and three tourism destinations in the Kingdom. Hotel Merit Award winners included; Aghadoe Heights Hotel and Spa, Great Southern Killarney, Killarney Avenue Hotel, The Brehon, Killarney Plaza Hotel, International Hotel Killarney, Dingle Skellig Hotel, Killarney Towers Hotel and the Europe Hotel Killarney.

Muckross House and Gardens, John B Keane’s Pub in Listowel, Tangney Tours Jaunting Cars, Killarney, also received Merit Awards from CIE Tours International. Each of the winners achieved a customer satisfaction rating of over 92 percent from CIE Tours International visitors, delivering an exceptional quality experience and welcome to tourists. Elizabeth Crabill, Chief Executive Officer, CIE Tours International said that 2018 was a fantastic year for the tourism industry in Ireland, with next year expected to be as good, in spite of uncertainties created by Brexit and other external factors. “The hotels and attractions which have been recognised all deserve acknowledgment for the roles they play in making Ireland a leading destination for visitors across the globe and ensuring tourists enjoy a memorable experience,” she said.

Dancer Karen plans milk bottle challenge One local Killarney lady, who is preparing to step it up on the dancefloor - has come up a unique fundraiser – by placing milk bottles around the town. Karen Greene, who is taking part in Strictly Come Dancing at the INEC on March 8 for the Irish Cancer Society Killarney and South Kerry Branch, is planning to put the specially designed bottles in shops and businesses – and is asking for your loose change. This local SCD fundraiser has over the years raised over €200,000 for The Irish Cancer Society - and locals are hoping to build on that amount this year. This year will see 12 couples take to the floor, including Karen and her partner John Lyne who works in Murphy’s Bar. And her children, Mark, who is captain of St Pauls Scotts Lakers, Johnathon, Michelle and Denis, and grandchildren Ellie-Ana, Levi and Ruby are all looking forward to seeing her dancing on the night. To try and raise as much as possible Karen wanted to come up something

unique, and one day while sitting at home enjoying a cuppa she saw the milk bottle on her table. “The idea came about at my kitchen table when I was wondering how I was going to raise funds,” Karen told the Killarney Advertiser. “The glass milk bottle, which I get from Chris Maloney from Ballymac Dairys,

was there and I thought how about I put them into shops and businesses locally. People can donate their loose change. “Sometimes people are embarrassed that they only have 20 cent or 10 cent – I want it – it all adds up. People think fundraisers are looking for huge sums of money. I’m doing it this way that if every one individual can put small change in,

FUNDRAISING: Karen Greene, pictured with Eugene O'Sullivan (Chair of the Killarney/South Kerry Cancer Society) and Chloe O'Doherty

it accumulates and benefits someone somewhere. Even the smallest of pebbles will make outward ripples even in the largest pools.” She plans to put bottles into Centra Muckross, Sheehan’s Costcutters on the Ross Road, O’Sullivan’s Pharmacy on New St., Gallivan Murphy Hooper Dolan Insurance/It’s For Rent, Halo Hairdresser on High St., Maher’s Meats and Alure at the Reeks, from February 11 to 18. Also, from February 4 to 8, the bottles will be in St Brigid’s and Presentation Secondary schools. “I want to thank the committee and Killarney Printing for doing the labels. I’m looking forward to dancing with John, who has been very patient with me. Best of luck to all the other dancers too.” And she added that if anyone wants to buy tickets they can contact her on 087 9517582. Tickets are also on sale from all dancers, which are soon to be announced, at the INEC box office, and from committee members.

HEALTHNESS KILLARNEY

Holistic Health, Fitness & Wellness

HEALTHNESS KILLARNEY sparked from my mission to create a welcoming and supportive space for people looking to improve their health, a space where I can provide custom training and coaching tailored not only to specific age groups and fitness levels, but to each individual person. No two people are the same and therefore no two sessions I offer are the same.

programmes at healthness aren’t just about improvement, they’re about enrichment

My name is Yani Hristova, and as a certified personal trainer, fitness coach and nutrition guide, I infuse my three passions into my work - exercise, holistic nutrition and overall well-being. Programmes at Healthness aren’t just about improvement, they’re about enrichment. Whether you are looking to lose weight, build strength after an injury, enhance muscle tone or to sustain your own healthy lifestyle, I am ready to take that journey with you.

MY STORY You could say health and fitness coaching was a path chosen for me. I was born to a top-performing strongman for a father, a mother who embodied wellness in all things, and grandparents who lived off of their own land in the beautiful, unscathed countryside of Bulgaria.

Today, I enjoy a fit and healthy lifestyle with my fiancé Oskar. Between health and fitness training, operating our company Killarney H20 Water Sports, serving as a SUP instructor, and regularly taking new courses and certification programmes, my own journey down this road continues to deeper.

I began playing sports the moment I had the fine motor skills to do so. From basketball to gymnastics, I loved challenging my body and my mind in the many different ways such physical activities allow. By age 15, I found myself in the gym, side-by-side with my father, mimicking his power lifts and cardio routines all the while getting in touch with my own strengths.

Health and fitness may have been chosen for me, but I came to choose them right back because I believe in the importance of fueling your body, mind, and spirit, I believe in the power of living a full and substantive life, and I believe in the great joy of reaching heights you never knew you could touch.

But it wasn’t only the fun and the challenge of the exercises that I loved, it was how they made me feel afterward. This was bolstered by the fresh, homegrown foods my mother and her parents served, another passion I inherited from the generations before me.

I BELIEVE IN MYSELF AND I BELIEVE IN YOU.

THE

Columnist ANNE LUCEY gives her take on happenings in Killarney,Kerry and beyond

Every GP should first be a nurse

Nurses are highly respected in our society and have always been. I have long believed there should be a fast-track system for nurses to qualify as doctors. There should be an entry scheme for nurses, the same as for science graduates, and I think every GP should first be a nurse. In the cauldron of the hospital ward I have no doubt our nurses suffer greatly from snooty consultants and snotty nosed junior doctors, not to mention - difficult patients. But I do not buy some of the lines being put out, almost certainly by the INMO, in pursuit of a pay claim, that nurses are the little girls of the health industry. The message from the picket lines seems that nurses are being exploited primarily because they are mostly women and also because they have a vocation. I am not sure “pity us” is the correct strategy for a pay increase. The opposite but equally risky strategy being pursued again by the INMO, on the

picket lines, ostensibly to win public support is: the nurses have looked after your families now it is time you, Mary Public, to support them! I think this smacks of bullying and is likely to get up people’s noses if pursued. The INMO publish salary scales on their website: Students get €14,243; post qualified, pre- registered €24,850; staff nurses start out at €29,056 and this goes to €44,343. Public health nurses can earn between €47,799 to €56,540 plus allowances, and directors of nursing can get almost twice this. I am not sure how this compares with say the HSE pen pushers, and I

think the problem is we have far too many administrators and managers in health, and we pay them far too much for meddling in wards and in the delivery of the health service. The fear among the Government and the public too is the guards will be out next for pay increases, then the teachers, then the prison officers. You see the nub of all of this, with the exception of the lower nursing grades, is we pay the public service far too much. We pay the politicians far too much. They enjoy pensions and security that is light years away from almost anyone in the private sector. And the gulf is widening. We need to think outside the box in this country and we need to level up the pitch and the conditions between the private and the public sector. Would there be anything wrong, for instance, with the public purse subsidising pay during the quiet months of the tourist industry in rural Ireland? Would there be anything wrong with giving tourist workers cash payment grants towards local housing? Would there be anything wrong with subsidising wages and training all year round?

Sharp VAT hike detrimental for tourism businesses The brutally vast increase in VAT in the October budget is beginning to hit home to politicians here. For it is a vast increase - as our own Emer Moynihan of Earls Court told The Irish Times recently – ‘this is a doubling of the tax’ with only two months-notice. It was announced in October and was introduced in January in an industry where advance bookings of one and two years are a staple. What for instance is the position now with weddings booked in Killarney hotels as far back as 2017, or even in the summer of 2018? I was speaking with a hotelier from west Cork whose business depends on the 150 weddings he gets each year. He is having to contact couples and tell them they are going to have to pay more. The sudden hike will be difficult for tour companies who would have priced their packages for 2019 and for 2020 long before the budget increase. Emer Moynihan feels ways could

We are beginning to have mass tourism in Killarney - but we are not seeing the benefits. We are especially vulnerable in Kerry where our politicians are so slow off the mark. On the one hand, they are failing to protect the big industry from sudden, massive VAT hikes, and on the other, they are failing to bring in any new industry. A new form of politics beyond skirmishing and shouting at the crossroads is what we need in rural Ireland. We need rural TDs to forget the party line and to band together. It is a pity our Fianna Fail TD, John Brassil, saw fit to stick with his party and in effect support the VAT increase. Fianna Fail councillors are out now saying the hike will cost the county €33 million …. well, well!

THE

Doyle’s Quarry Products offer superb quality building materials

Doyle’s Quarry Products are one of the longest running family businesses in Kerry supplying a range of building materials such as sand, percolation and drainage stone. The company delivers all across Kerry, north and west Cork and west Limerick. Originally the business was set up in Coolcaslagh, Killarney in 1970, by Johnny Doyle from Barraduff. Many local hotels such as the Towers and the Plaza, the Garda Barracks in Killarney, Fitzgerald Stadium, The Old Head of Kinsale Golf Course, and different housing schemes in Killarney town, were built using their materials. Later, the business was taken over by Johnny’s son Patrick, who began

working with his father at the age of 18. Since 2001, Patrick has been operating out of the Muckross quarry site with his son Shane. Doyle’s Quarry Products offer building and plastering sand, sand for house builds, sports fields and arenas, percolation and drainage stone, walk and concrete gravel, as well as trunking and filling stone. Just recently they have added a new service delivering one tonne of bags of sand or aggregates and also bulk

loads of up to 25 tonnes. “This has been going very well allowing home owners to buy smaller quantities of sand as they need it,” Patrick said. “We hope to expand on that to supply more customers, hardware shops and garden centres in the future. Quality control is of the upmost importance to us. We maintain high standards with our products and test samples regularly to meet the industry standard.”

Songs are being practised and lines rehearsed as Killarney Musical Society (KMS) prepares for its 34th annual show. The well-known and very talented bunch are planning to bring ‘The Sound of Music’ to life this month in the INEC, opening on Tuesday, February 26 and running for three nights to Thursday, February 28 inclusive. This year’s musical tells the story of Maria, who takes a job as governess to a large family while she decides whether to become a nun. She falls in love with the children and their widowed father, Captain von Trapp. He is ordered to accept a commission in the German navy, but he opposes the Nazis. He and Maria decide to flee from Austria with the children. “You may not know it - but you are sure to know many of the musical numbers in this show such as ‘Do Re Mi’, ‘My Favourite Things’, ‘Climb Every Mountain’, ‘Sixteen Going On Seventeen’, ‘Edelweiss’ and who can forget that lovely scene from the film with the von Trapp family singing...’So Long, Farewell’,” Orna Cleary O’Shea, PRO with KMS, said. “Cast and crew are putting in the time and effort now with rehearsals taking place a few nights a week and weekends

also to ensure that the show is up to the usual high standards that our amazing, loyal audiences have come to expect at this stage. “The society takes great pride in what they do and like to deliver a production and performance far beyond their 'amateur' status in musical theatre.” This year is proving to be up there with the best as there’s a stunning cast ready to tread the boards including local girl Siobhan Bustin playing the part of Maria beautifully, alongside stalwart of the society, Derek O'Leary playing Captain von Trapp, Brid Mills is playing a very believable Mother Superior and then the children's chorus, the von Trapp family, she added. “What can we say about these super talented, wonderful young people, they are absolutely fantastic in all they do, and we have to say they truly are a treasure and a pleasure to be around. “So please don't miss the opportunity to see this stunning musical brought to life with Killarney Musical Society and support local talent at its best.” Tickets can be purchased in advance by contacting the society on 087 9933411 or 087 1342314. Inspirational Ian receives Garda Youth Achievement Award

An inspirational teenager from Killarney, who has had to overcome great challenges, was this week named the Overall Winner of the Lee Strand Kerry Garda Youth Achievement Awards 2018. 17 year-old Ian O’Connell from Killarney was described as “an outstanding individual, an inspiration to all” and “a true real life hero” at the awards ceremony held in the Ballyroe Heights Hotel in Tralee on Friday last. Over 250 people from across the county attended the ceremony, where 20 Merit Awards, a Group Award, a Special Achievement Award, a Community Safety Award and the Overall Winner

Award were presented on the night. When Ian was 16 years-old, he became paralysed from the neck down after falling off his bike in the Killarney National Park. The entire country was inspired by Ian O'Connell's remarkable interview on the Late Late Show last May. His motto if I can’t stand up, I will stand out” has made him a national hero for his positive attitude to life. Ian was presented with a specially commissioned crystal

Killorglin student to test water project in Uganda A sixth-year student from Killorglin Community College jets off to remote parts of rural Uganda, this month, as one of the winners of a major award at Ireland’s leading school science fair. 18 year-old Timothy McGrath, will get the chance to get up close with some of the most pressing challenges affecting people in the Developing World, thanks to his win in the Irish Aid sponsored ‘Science for Development Award’ category at last year’s BT Young Scientist and Technology Exhibition (BTYS). The award, organised annually by Irish charity Self Help Africa, rewards student projects that seek to apply scientific solutions to some of the development challenges facing communities in poorer parts of the world. Timothy will travel with students and teachers from several other Irish schools on the week-long trip, and will meet communities with whom Self Help Africa has been working. “I am excited to live a new experience and to be in a new environment,” Tim-

othy, who won the Irish Aid sponsored travel bursary for his project – a device that used genetic engineering to purify cholera-infected water, said. “I think there will be a lot to take in! “I’m hoping to bring one of the actual machines that I’ve developed with me, and see if the people I meet in Uganda think it can be applied there.” The group will fly from Dublin to Kampala, the capital of Uganda, on February 16. They will then head north to visit farming communities in Teso, Soroti, and Kirandongo. In these remote rural areas, upwards of 70 percent of the population rely on farming for a living. Timothy McGrath had a chance to meet his fellow travellers during a pre-trip meeting in Dublin, last month, when he was again in competition at the BT Young Scientist Expo. The 18 year-old was again a winner this year, as he finished in third place of his category for creating a biofilter system using halophyte plants to combat oceanic dead zones.

Hazelnut, broccoli, potato cakes

“I’m not saying I will always be vegan, I can just say I’m enjoying the ride and experiences I've had.”

• 1 tbsp olive oil • 2 1/2 ounces leek, white part only, chopped finely • 2 1/2 ounces onion, chopped finely • 1 large garlic clove, chopped finely • 3 ounces broccoli , chopped finely, Peel the stem and chop too • 8 ounces peeled new potatoes cut into small dice • 6 tbsp canned chick peas drained and blitzed up • 1 lemon zested • Handful crushed hazelnuts • Salt pepper and few chilli flakes • Few drops almond milk to bind

Chad Byrne turned vegan for the month of January and says it has been very positive.

A month long vegan challenge pleasantly surprises local chef There’s a lifestyle revolution taking place and local chef Chad Byrne, decided to try it for a whole month – by becoming vegan. After a month of taking on Veganuary, Chad, who is Head Chef at Danú in the Brehon Hotel, tells the Killarney Advertiser how it all worked out for him. From the initial shock of finding foods to eat - to the pleasant surprise of losing half a stone in three weeks – he says he has openly embraced the idea of becoming a vegan – although will not be taking it on full-time. “I can honestly say I have never felt better, I’m not sure if it’s a placebo effect but looking at a bowl of beautiful fresh fruit on mixed oat porridge with carrot, ginger and apple smoothie for breakfast to start the day makes you feel vibrant and ready to take on the day,” he said. “While it’s changing a diet, it’s also a change in lifestyle, with only positive benefits from losing half a stone in

weight in my first three weeks to a general feeling of vitality. However, the first week I did feel a little lethargic, but a B12 supplement helped get over that.” He explained that as a chef, he wanted to challenge himself. “First and foremost we have so many vegans eating with us lately in the Brehon. It’s not just a fad or trend - it’s a lifestyle revolution taking place. “I thought if I go vegan for a month I can really get more adventurous with vegan food as opposed to a meat eater cooking for a vegan “thinking what they would like”. And since going full circle my lifestyle and health has seen a massive benefit. “Aside from the food, I also experienced a genuine buzz and sense of contentment from actually doing something

positive for animals and my carbon footprint. I always felt there was something more I could be doing.” Initially he said that he was dreading becoming a vegan. “I can do without meat and fish, it’s the biproducts that worried me - simple things like a toasted cheese sandwich which I felt would be hard to do without - but after a concerted effort your mind operates differently, a ‘what will I use instead’ approach opens up so many ideas. I duly note it’s a luxury to be a chef as its certainly makes it a hell of a lot easier.” From his recent experience, Chad has now started to take a more active role in the vegan community by writing a blog for ‘Chef Network’. “I’m also doing local projects like our upcoming Vegan Pop Up in Killarney and also launching wider and more varied selections for vegans at the Brehon.

• In a medium pan over a medium heat, add the oil, leeks, potatoes, onions and garlic and cook, until soft • Add the broccoli, two more tablespoons of water and cook covered 15 minutes, stirring occasionally • Let cool for 10 minutes • Add the nuts and blitzed chickpeas, lemon, seasoning and almond milk to bind (should be firm), form into bite sized patties • To cook, heat a large pan cook over medium heat, cook four to five minutes until the bottom is golden, gently flip and cook and additional four to five minutes. You can freeze whatever you don’t eat. To reheat from frozen, bake in 390F preheated oven for 25 minutes. Serve with a little salsa or vegan style relish.

“I’ve embraced it! My larder at home is very different to what it once was – now filled with grains, pulses, veggies and fruit. Whole foods are key, and spices are your best friend! My cooking has also become far more inclusive with a few tiny tweaks. I urge anyone to try it even for a few days. It will give you a new philosophy on your approach to food. I’m not saying I will always be vegan, I can just say I’m enjoying the ride and learning experiences I've had.”

Generous Joe raises €1,600 for charity Local window cleaner Joe Gaffey may have just tuned the big 70 – but he has no plans to slow down just yet! Although Joe, from Ferndale Avenue, Killarney, officially celebrated the milestone on Friday - he spent Saturday night partying the night away with family and friends in The Dromhall Hotel. And, being kind natured and generous, he used the occasion as a fundraiser – raising €1,600 for the Dementia Wing in the Rock Mount Day Centre. Joe, who has been window cleaning in town for 31 years, was joined on the night by his wife Julie, sons Darren and Jonathan, daughter-in-law Joanne, grandchildren Olivia (13) and Ruby (11), as well as his sisters Mary and Joan and family from as far as London, Ferbane, and as local as Killarney and Castleisland. Unfortunately his brothers Declan and Ray couldn’t make it on the night. “It was a great night,” Joe told the Killarney Advertiser. “We had finger food and plenty of mu-

sic by DJ Ger O’Sullivan. He played ‘60s and ‘70s including Elvis, ABBA and Joe Dolan and some modern songs for the younger crowd.” He said that everyone gave generously for which he’s very thankful. 10 years ago he did a fundraiser for MS and raised over €700 and was delighted to raise even more this time around. “My brother Ray in Leeds has Alzheimer’s which inspired me to pick that charity. It’s very common – it’s frightening.” And he added that not only were people generous on the night but local businesses and people on the street have been stopping him and donating as well. “People around the town are very generous,” he said. “I want to say thank you to everyone for coming on the night and supporting the charity, local businesses and people for their support also.” And he won’t be slowing down anytime soon, he added. “You make the best of what you have and I have no intention of retiring just yet. I love working and I’m quite content.”

GARDEN MAGIC

Gardening - By Debby Looney

Debby is available for advice and garden consultations, just call 086 6088156 or email barnhillky@gmail.com

Rotate veg to avoid disease and soil fatigue Last week I wrote about crop rotation in the vegetable garden and have since been asked ‘why?’ Mainly it is done to avoid soil fatigue. Different types of vegetables need different types of nutrients, for example, cabbage plants are leafy greens and need a lot of nitrogen so planting them in rotation after legumes makes sense, as legumes set nitrogen in the soil. Peas, beans, lentils, lupins and clover, among others, would be classed as leguminous plants. These plants have nodules at their roots which house microscopic bacteria that live in a symbiotic relationship with the plant, utilising carbohydrates from the plants to live, and in turn fixing nitrogen in the soil to help plants grow. Leaving these plants to wither on the ground, and then digging them in, is a fantastic and natural way to enrich the soil. Another reason to rotate veg is to avoid disease. For instance, the brassica family, kale, sprouts, cauliflowers etc., are all susceptible to club root, which is where the root of the plant swells and is useless as a root. This disease stays in the soil for years, and by rotating crops you firstly avoid getting it at all, and secondly, other crops are not affected causing the disease to die out. Adding lime to the soil also prevents club root. Potato cyst

eelworms are another example. They affect only potatoes, but once you get them, they stay in the soil for up to ten years. Blight spores also stay dormant in the soil for several years, so again, crop rotation is the answer. Onion white rot is another disease which only affects certain plants, in this case the allium family. Another reason to use crop rotation in the garden is prevention of weeds. Leafy veg keep down weeds, so growing something like onions is easier in the following year. It is important to keep beds clearly marked or keep a diary, as it is easy to forget what grows where from year-to-year! If you are lucky enough to have a heated glasshouse, you can start sowing quite a few veg, such as broad beans, leeks and sweet pea. However, if you are dependent on the weather, outdoor sowing is not recommended until May. In the meantime, put a thick layer of compost or straw on fallow beds, or sow green manure such as red clover or winter rye. These can then be dug in when you need the space. Start off beds for permanent veg, such as Jerusalem artichokes, asparagus and artichokes. Asparagus are a must in my opinion, as many of the spears we see in the shops are flown in all the way from Peru and Mexico, which is environmentally irresponsible, and which also makes me wonder what kind of nutrient levels are still present.

The Age of Light By WHITNEY SCHARER

RELEASED ON TUESDAY, FEBRUARY 5, ON AMAZON.COM. She went to Paris to start over, to make art instead of being made into it. A captivating debut novel by Whitney Scharer, ‘The Age of Light’ tells the story of Vogue model turned renowned photographer Lee Miller, and her search to forge a new identity as an artist after a life spent as a muse. "I'd rather take a photograph than be one," she declares after she arrives in Paris in 1929, where she soon catches the eye of the famous Surrealist Man Ray. Though he wants to use her only as a model, Lee convinces him to take her on as his assistant and teach her everything he knows. But Man Ray turns out to be an egotistical, charismatic force, and as they work together in the darkroom, their personal and professional lives become intimately entwined, changing the course of Lee's life forever. Lee's journey takes us from the cabarets of bohemian Paris to the bat-

tlefields of war-torn Europe during WW II, from discovering radical new photography techniques to documenting the liberation of the concentration camps as one of the first female war correspondents. Through it all, Lee must grapple with the question of whether it's possible to reconcile romantic desire with artistic ambition - and what she will have to sacrifice to do so. Told in interweaving timelines, this sensuous, richly detailed novel brings Lee Miller - a brilliant and pioneering artist - out of the shadows of a man's legacy and into the light.

THE POWER OF ADVERTISING “My late father, Jackie Healy-Rae, always advertised his weekly Saturday clinic in Scotts Hotel at 3pm in the Killarney Advertiser. I continued this tradition since 2011 as I also appreciate the power of local advertising. To be a national politician, you have to be elected locally. The local message is more important than any other media outlet for me. I really believe the people appreciate, so much, the local news, pictures, death notices and information in our local advertiser and nothing could replace it. Small businesses can afford local advertising as it comes within their budget. When the advertiser comes out, there are literally people waiting at shops and outlets to pick it up. This proves how important it is in our community. The Killarney Advertiser has been in existence since 1973, 46 years. I am quite confident that despite the changes in modern technology, the Killarney Advertiser will proudly celebrate its 100th anniversary in 54 years and I would like to be around for the celebrations”

“We are proud and privileged to say that we have worked with the Killarney Advertiser since its inception. They offer a powerful blend of creative and collaborative adverts that exceed expectations. More importantly, it is always a pleasure to work with the team. Killarney Advertiser is a company on point with a highly-developed sense of community and social responsibility. Bank of Ireland and Aer Lingus launch Aer Credit Card Bank of Ireland has teamed up with Aer Lingus to introduce its newest credit card offering. – the Aer Credit Card.

Is a Big Mac with bacon still a Big Mac™? There are many questions that baffle and perplex us; is it still an empty room if there’s someone in it? Is it still priceless if it was free? And now is a Big Mac® with bacon, still a Big Mac®? This is the first time the iconic Big Mac® has been changed in Ireland - since the burger’s creation in 1968 - and opinion is divided on the addition. Big Mac® purists are questioning if the burger should even be classed as a Big Mac® at all, whilst others are welcoming the new addition in to the Big Mac® family with open arms. Join the debate and have your say: #NotABigMac or #StillABigMac. As if that wasn’t big enough news, the Grand Big Mac™ and Mac Jr.™ are back by popular demand, and it’s the first time the burgers have returned following their

No final deal until President Xi, and I, meet Chinese officials and the US are discussing a potential meeting between Presidents Donald Trump and Xi Jinping in late February, according to CNBC. The meeting is planned to take place after a summit between Trump and North Korean leader Kim Jong Un and just before the March 2 deadline for a US-China trade deal. However, the US is concerned

about the optics of a deal being announced on Chinese soil. The US also wants prior commitments from China. Allies like Japan and South Korea are also worried about backto-back meetings with nondemocratic leaders and would want to be briefed afterward. A White House official told CNBC that "thus far, we have focused on substance and not next steps". US and China officials are meeting in Washington, trying to strike the

trade deal to avert a new round of tariffs. Trump tweeted on Thursday (yesterday) that the meetings in Washington are going well, adding, "China's representatives and I are trying to do a complete deal, leaving NOTHING unresolved on the table". However, he noted that a deal will not be struck until he meets with Chinese President Xi Jinping.

BAI publishes updated Access Rules The Broadcasting Authority of Ireland (BAI) has this week announced the publication of its updated BAI Access Rules, designed to increase the understanding and enjoyment of television by people who are deaf, hard of hearing, blind or partially sighted.

Woman plans to walk the entire coast of Great Britain and Ireland Karen Penny, 53, from The Gower in South Wales - a former legal professional who has just set off to walk the entire coast of Great Britain and Ireland - to raise money for dementia research. She estimates that her incredible trek will take her three-and-a-half to four years to complete and if successful will be the first woman to complete a continuous walk around the whole of the UK and Irish coastline. Also, during which time she is not going to return home at all – while her husband will drive out in a campervan to join her every six weeks. She’s “guesstimated” a total distance of 20,000 miles and will carry a tent in her rucksack along the way. She aims to raise £100,000 for Alzheimer’s Research UK, having been moved to support the charity after the tragic deaths of both of her in-laws from dementia. “I’m delighted to do this,” Karen said. “I wanted to do something that would get a good amount of money. Both my husband’s parents died from dementia-related illnesses, and it had a massive effect on me. Alzheimer’s is something that touches nearly every family.” She set out recently from her local pri-

mary school in Pennard, Swansea with a great send-off from the local community. From there she’s heading around the Welsh coast until she reaches Fishguard, and she will then cross to Rosslare at the beginning of February. Then, after walking the entire circumference of Ireland clockwise, she’ll return to Wales, head north and take in “at least twenty” Scottish islands on route before coming back down and around to her starting point in South Wales. She has spent the last few months training hard for her epic voyage, covering between eight and 10 miles a day, with her full kit that weighs around 30lbs. She’s also been sleeping in her tent to get used to the weather conditions she’s going to be experiencing on route! “There’s nowhere better in the UK to train than on the beautiful Gower coast where I live,” she said. “I live on Three Cliffs Bay, and the whole of the Gower coastline is tricky, it’s up and down!”

The Access Rules apply to broadcasters within the jurisdiction of Ireland and set out obligations on broadcasters in respect of the provision of subtitling, Irish Sign Language and audio description. The 2019 rules include revised subtitling targets for a number of broadcasting services and, for the first time, the introduction of audio description and Irish Sign Language targets for Virgin Media One. Other notable provisions of the revised rules include the setting of specific subtitling targets for broadcasters during peak time viewing and the setting of incremental annual increases for each of the relevant services in respect of Irish Sign Language targets. “Since first introduced in 2005, the BAI Access Rules have contributed to the increased availability of quality audio-visual

content for Irish audiences who avail of access/assistive services,” Michael O’Keeffe, BAI Chief Executive, said. “I am confident that the targets set out in the rules will further add to the range and sources of accessible content on Irish television services. “The revised rules have been informed by significant engagement with broadcasters, user groups and interested parties, and I would like to thank all those who participated in the development process, including those who responded to the public consultation. We look forward to continued engagement with the key stakeholders to support the achievement of targets over the lifetime of the rules.” The rules come into immediate effect and set out targets for the period 2019 – 2023.

Agreement reached on work, life balance package The European Parliament and the Council have reached a deal on a Work, Life Balance package. The aim of the measures is to help workers balance their professional and family lives and to work towards a modern family policy and economic prosperity for families all around Europe. “Work/Life balance is an issue which concerns many people in the workforce and it needs to be tackled with concrete policy measures both in Europe and in Ireland,” Ireland South MEP, Deirdre Clune said. According to figures from the EU, the impact of parenthood on the labour market participation still varies greatly for women and men – only 65.5 percent of women with children under 12 work, compared to 90.3 percent of men. Across the European Union, women remain considerably underrepresented in the labour market and in management. The overall employment rate of women is still 11.6 pp lower than that of men. 31.5 percent of working women work part-time versus 8.2 percent of working men. This is especially the

case for those with children.Just over 50 percent of women work full-time, compared to 71.2 percent of men. Therefore, the full-time employment rate gap reaches 25.5pp. Caring responsibilities are reasons for inactivity for almost 20 percent inactive women, while this is only the case for less than 2 percent of men. “The workplace can be an exciting and exhilarating place,” MEP Clune said. “However, it can also be a challenging place. What many people will struggle with is getting their work/life balance right. We are doing a lot of work at the European Parliament on the promotion of a good work/life balance and I am delighted to see there are now further developments in this area which can help those in the workforce who need it. “The Irish Government is doing great work to help support working parents but it is also important that businesses play their part in supporting their employees. I am conscious too that employers, particularly in small businesses, will fear the cost of introducing flexibility but it will go a long way in the long run as they will retain valuable, skilled employees.”

“The Fine Gael Parliamentary Party made a proposal to Transport Minister Shane Ross last year for the extension of evening rural bus services around the country to encourage increased connectivity in our communities. “My colleague the Fine Gael Party Chair, Martin Heydon, proposed the idea as a key way to tackle rural isolation, an issue that many people have raised with me locally. It is so important we ensure that people can get around their area at night time as well as during the day, be it to local events, the GAA club, shopping centres, restaurants, pubs and visiting friends and relatives. “Since last summer additional bus services have been running in Kerry, and indeed all counties, on average from 6pm to 11pm typically on Friday and Saturday. This pilot scheme has proven very successful and I am glad that the

Minister has confirmed it will continue until at least March 31, until a full review is complete. “Originally, it was intended that the pilot would end on December 31, 2018 after which the National Transport Authority would review the results of it. It has been confirmed to me that the NTA will now conduct a further review of the performance of these services in March 2019, after which a decision will be taken regarding future funding for these services. “As we have seen now with the pilot scheme, the more it is used, the better chance it has of being retained. I encourage the many people benefitting from this service in Kerry to continue using it now that it has been extended, and within Fine Gael I will continue to push for this evening service to be made permanent.”

COFFEE TIME: Launching the Friends of the Children of Chernobyl Annual Coffee Morning, which will be held on February 7 in the Killarney Golf and Fishing Club, Killarney, were: Paula Kavanagh, Dave McCarthy and Joan Buckley.

Great drinks and delicious food at the Celtic Whiskey Bar & Larder The consensus at the Celtic Whiskey Bar is that Valentine’s is by far the most difficult occasion to buy a present for ‘what is too much or too little?’ Our more experienced Valentine’s gift-givers are in agreement that the more simple the gift, the better; stick with what you know they like and enjoy. There is very few of us that don’t enjoy an artisan gin or exclusive whiskey, and it just so happens that the team at the Celtic Whiskey Bar & Larder has one of the largest selections in Kerry to choose from: by the bottle or the glass. But nothing beats breaking bread and indulging oneself with great drinks and delicious food with your other half.

Head Chef Alan MacDonald at the Celtic Whiskey Bar & Larder has carefully crafted a Valentine’s dinner menu using the best of seasonal, Irish produce, that will have something for everyone; whether it’s locally-sourced Black Angus Ribeye or the perfect aphrodisiac, fresh Giga oysters. Using the best of seasonal, Irish produce, fresh rhubarb also features as the delightful topping to a pavlova dessert. This delicious three course menu is €30pp, or €25pp for two courses and will run from Thursday 14 – Saturday 16 of February. There will also be 2 for 1 cocktails on Valentine’s night too! For reservations, please contact the Celtic Whiskey Bar & Larder on 064 663 5700 or email info@celticwhiskeybar. com.

Lotus and Williams to co-develop Omega hypercar There was a time when Lotus and Williams battled it out for Grand Prix race wins. Now, the two Formula One legends have teamed up to build Lotus’s halo hypercar to mark its rebirth under new owners, Geely.

2019 Renault Clio revealed Renault completely unveiled its allnew fifth-generation Renault Clio ahead of its official launch at the Geneva Motor Show this March. Claimed to be both more elegant and ‘dynamic’ than the car it replaces, the new Renault Clio’s design lifts styling cues like its LED lamps, large grille and central air scoop from its bigger brother, the Megane. The next Clio also steals some of its sibling’s air bending tricks, like the front air deflectors that channel curtains of air around the front wheel arches reducing turbulence and front-axle lift. Despite shrinking overall externally, the French car-maker claims its Mark V Renault Clio offers passengers a roomier, more spacious cabin — that, incidentally, is claimed to feature a ‘revolutionary’ design. The revolution, Renault explains, has been in the leap forward in the Clio’s both

perceived quality and driver ergonomics. Pushing the Clio closer than ever before to rivals like the Audi A1, Renault says owners will appreciate the use of highend materials, soft-touch dash, door panels and central console and the general attention to detail throughout. New technology also dominates. As previewed before the Clio’s unveiling, the French Volkswagen Polo-rival comes equipped with not only a full configurable digital dash but the largest infotainment systems in its class, with a huge 9.3-inch portrait-mounted screen that dominates the cabin. There’s also more storage space and a wireless smartphone charging area. Finally, the new shapelier seats are said to be completely redesigned to offer more support and kneeroom for rear passengers that now have an additional 26mm legroom. The 330-391-litre boot space, meanwhile, is claimed to be class best.

Lotus has turned to Williams Advanced Engineering division to help it with the “advanced propulsion technologies” for its €2.2 million limited-edition Omega comeback car. The timeframe is believed to have been locked in so the hypercar can land just before a new range of Lotus sports cars to replace the aging Evora and the medieval Elise. It will be the point of the sword for moving Lotus upmarket to compete with Ferrari and Porsche. It’s expected to be an all-wheel drive electric hypercar with two or more elec-

tric motors and at least 400km of electric range. Given that Williams provided the batteries for every car over the first three years of the Formula E championship, it’s likely that Lotus will allow it to convert that technology or move to a next-generation version of it. Williams also has expertise in energy regeneration and has some big-name operations on its CV. It built Nissan’s Bladeglider concept cars, worked with Porsche’s Le Mans-winning LMP1 program and did all the aerodynamic work on the Ginetta sports car.

Mercedes-Benz concept car to end crashes The idea of zero road deaths sounds like a pipe dream - but Mercedes-Benz says an uncrashable car is possible. That’s the opinion Mercedes-Benz global R&D chief, Ola Kalennius, who is excited about his new ESF or Experimental Safety Vehicle. Companies like Volvo have been talking up the idea of zero deaths for years – once claiming it would reach this milestone in 2020. Now, Mercedes-Benz is readying its safest vehicle ever – a car that is intended to make the road toll a distant memory.

“Safety is the core DNA of Mercedes and the ultimate goal is zero accidents in traffic,” said Ola Kalennius, the bloke in charge of research and development at Mercedes-Benz cars. In an interview at the 2019 Consumer Electronics Show, where autonomous and even flying cars were in abundance, Kalennius confirmed that a new ESF would be revealed mid-2019. “Wait and see!” was Kalennius’ initial response, but improvements in autonomous driving tech and collision prevention are expected, as are new occupant protection systems designed to reduce injury in the advent of a car crash.

Minister Griffin launches ambitious three-year Cara strategy Minister of State for Tourism and Sport, Brendan Griffin TD, officially launched Cara’s new three-year strategy at the organisation’s new offices at state-of-theart Kerry Sports Academy at the Institute of Technology, Tralee. Cara is a leading pan-disability sport organisation providing a collaborative and partnership platform to increase sport and physical activity opportunities for people with disabilities across Ireland. Cara originated from the internationally recognised Health and Leisure Adapted Physical Activity Programme at the Institute of Technology Tralee. It is the view of Cara that all people with disabilities deserve to have equal opportunities to experience the benefits that participating in sport and physical activity can bring. The new strategy provides a route map to guide and focus Cara’s work over the next three years. Speaking at the launch on Friday last, Minister Griffin said he was delighted to launch Cara’s first strategy in the fantastic surrounds of the new Kerry Sports Academy at Institute of Technology Tralee. “Everyone, no matter what their background or circumstances, should have the opportunity to engage in sport and physical activity at a level of their choosing,” he said. “This is one of the key priorities of the new National Sports Policy 2018-2027.” Niamh Daffy, CEO of Cara, highlighted the important focus of the new strategy in strengthening the collaborative nature

of Cara’s engagements with the various sectors. “While this is our strategy, it is a strategy that we hope will be shared, we recognise the importance of working with a range of stakeholders and we believe that it is only through this approach that positive change can come about and collectively we can put disability sport and inclusive physical activity at the heart of our nation.” Chief Executive of Sport Ireland, John Treacy, added that the three-year strategy builds on the excellent work achieved since the organisation’s establishment in 2007. “Cara is a central partner in the delivery of Sport Ireland’s Policy on Participation in Sport by People with Disabilities, which is reflected in our continuing investment in the organisation and the presence of Cara on the Sport Ireland National Sports Campus.” President Oliver Murphy said the IT Tralee looks forward to Cara taking up residency in the new €19 million Kerry Sports Academy. “Cara, IT Tralee and the UNESCO Chair at the Institute, through a partnership approach will continue to advance their respective agendas, both nationally and internationally, having a state-of-the-art physical infrastructure via the KSA to deliver on their individual and collaborative objectives.” Cara’s Strategic Plan (2019-2021) can be accessed at www.caracentre.ie

BARTLETT

FALVEY

In loving memory of Peggy Bartlett, Late of 32 St. Brendan’s Place, Killarney, Who died on the 1st February 2017.

In loving memory of Tony Falvey, Batterfield, Firies, Who died on 28th January 2013.

A light from our household is gone, A voice we loved is still, A place vacant in our home, That never can be filled.

Though your smile is gone forever, and your hand we cannot touch, We have so many memories, of the ones we loved so much. Your memory is our keepsake, with which we’ll never part. God has you in His keeping, We have you in our hearts.

Lonely is the home without you, Life to us is not the same, The entire world would be like heaven, If we could have you back again. How dearly we loved you, And prayed you might live, But Jesus just beckoned and we had to give, God give us strength to bear it, And courage to fight the blow, What it meant to lose you, God alone will ever know. May the lord of love and mercy, Care for our dear mom Peggy, Who is gone but will never be forgotten, And bless with consolation, Those left to carry on.

Sadly missed and always remembered by your loving sons Oliver, Patrick & Sean, daughters Veronica & Helena, daughter in law Margaret, sons in law Steve and Yann and grandchildren.

COLLINS

Birthday Remembrance of our grandson Brian, Late of Crohane, Fossa, Whose birthday falls on 1st February.

In loving memory of Niall Collins, Late of Abbeylands, Killorglin, Who’s birthday we remember on 31st of January.

Thinking of you on your Birthday Brian, But that is nothing new, For no day dawns and no day ends, Without a thought of you.

Loved and sadly missed Nana and Granda.

BIRTHDAY REMEMBRANCE

21ST ANNIVERSARY COFFEY

Sadly missed and lovingly remembered by your son David, daughters Majella, Noreen and Helene.

As we open our eyes this morning, And look to Heaven above, We whisper “Happy Birthday Brian”, And send you all our love.

In loving memory of Maureen Coffey, Late of Dromin, Fossa, Killarney, Who died on the 8th of February, 1998. God saw you getting tired, And a cure was not to be, So he put his arms around her, And whispered “come to me”. With tear filled eyes we watched her, Suffer and fade away, Although we loved her deeply, We could not make her stay.

In loving memory of Peggy Cahill, Late of Doocarrig, Headford, Killarney, Co. Kerry, Who passed away on the 2nd February 2011. You can shed tears that she is gone, Or you can smile because she lived, You can close your eyes and pray that she will come back, Or you can open your eyes and see that she has left. Your heart can be empty because you can’t see her, Or you can be full of the love that she shared. You can turn your back on tomorrow and live yesterday, Or you can be happy for tomorrow because of yesterday. You can remember her and only that she is gone, Or you can cherish her memory and let it live on. You can cry and close your mind, be empty and turn your back, Or you can do what she would want: Smile, open your eyes, love and go on. Sadly missed and always remembered by your loving family.

Your request will be granted no matter how difficult it may seem. Favour publication must be promised. MC

Dirty January win bodes well for Keane | By Adam Moynihan

DARA MOYNIHAN

Peter Keane’s reign got off to the perfect start with a solid win against Tyrone on Sunday and while it wasn’t vintage Kerry by any stretch of the imagination, the manner of the victory certainly bodes well for rest of the year. You would have expected a dirty day in January to suit Mickey Harte’s Tyrone more than Keane’s experimental-looking Kerry side but the hosts really got stuck in, much to the delight of the unseasonably boisterous home crowd. There seems to be this notion that Kerry supporters are Gaelic football’s great elitists, that we demand free-flowing, attack-minded football at all costs. The Madridistas of the GAA, if you will. But the biggest cheers the last day didn’t come after dummy solos or spectacular scores; they came whenever a Tyrone player was landed back on his arse or out over the sideline in front of the stand.

Teams from the north are perceived to be physically tougher than Kerry and the success of Tyrone in particular is often attributed in large parts to their ability to “win the battle”. This notion hurt Kerry folk throughout the 2000s and I think it still hurts to this day, so whenever Kerry embrace the physical side of the game and eek out a gritty result, especially against a rival, supporters really warm to it. You could see and hear that the last day up in the Park. Fair enough, we’d rather kick 3-15 and play them off the pitch, but even Kerry fans enjoy a bit of flaking every now and then.

To be completely honest about it, I didn’t think the original starting 15 named by Peter Keane on Friday was particularly inspiring. And I mean no disrespect to the players who were selected, it’s just that we’ve seen them all before. It always makes it a bit more exciting for the fans when there are new guys on show so Dara Moynihan’s inclusion at the last minute definitely sparked some interest. Followers of Kerry football have been excited about the diminutive Spa forward since he shone for the triumphant St Brendan’s College and Kerry minor teams in 2016 but until a fella actually goes out and does it for the Kerry seniors, there will always be question marks. 35 minutes into his senior intercounty career, many of those questions had already been answered. Moynihan was excellent in that opening period. He kicked two points, one off the left and one off the right, as Kerry built up a commanding, and deserved, 5-1 lead.

It’s a pity he didn’t land one of his efforts in the second half but nevertheless it was a very solid introduction to the big leagues. What makes Dara special is the fact that he plays with no fear whatsoever. Though short in stature, the well-built wing forward is extremely brave and he plays in such a manner that you wouldn’t even notice the height disadvantage. To borrow an expression from American sports, he plays bigger than he is. He’s cheeky out as well and he certainly doesn’t strike you as someone who stands on ceremony. It doesn’t bother him who’s marking him or what the stage is. His game never changes. In terms of his style of play, he’s incredibly fast and direct but he’s also clever enough and unselfish enough to keep it simple when required. It’s obviously very early days for the 20-year-old and one good game doesn’t make a Kerry player, but on Sunday’s showing it seems as though he has all the tools to make the grade.

A NEW FULL BACK?

Moynihan’s East Kerry teammate Jack Sherwood was drafted in to play full back, ostensibly as a stop-gap measure, but in all honesty he was probably more assured at the position on Sunday than any Kerry defender has been in years. He will presumably get the nod again this weekend and after some time in the wilderness, the Firies all-rounder now has a massive opportunity to nail down a starting place in Peter Keane’s new-look Kerry team. Goalkeeper Shane Ryan also acquitted himself quite well on Sunday, although to be fair he wasn’t really tested by a surprisingly toothless Tyrone attack. It will be interesting to see how Keane divides up the league campaign between the Rathmore man and Legion’s Brian Kelly as you would imagine that both will get a chance to stake their claim before Kerry play their first championship game on June 1. With Shane Murphy to come back into contention once Dr Crokes are finished in the Club Championship, it’s extremely hard to predict who Keane’s long-term number 1 will be. With all the talk of injuries and Sigerson and possibly even relegation down the line, there wasn’t much optimism floating about as supporters trudged up the sandpit and Lewis Road for Kerry’s league opener on Sunday but they certainly came back into town with more of a spring in their step. The home team ground out a solid win in Peter Keane’s first game as senior manager and that’s a very good habit to get into.

Kerry pick up valuable two points

Kerry

0-11 | Tyrone 0-7

| By Eamonn Fitzgerald ::: Fitzgerald Stadium

Peter Keane got his senior managerial career off to a flying start in the Fitzgerald Stadium on Sunday last with an unexpected win, collecting two valuable league points at the expense of Tyrone. Prior to this game I expected Tyrone to win. They had a settled and experienced team and had won the McKenna Cup on foot of five competitive games, whereas Kerry did not play in the McGrath Cup and this was their first competitive outing. I was really impressed with Kerry’s display and could not believe how bad Tyrone were. Kerry had to line out with two changes from the selected team. Diarmuid O’Connor (Na Gaeil) started instead of Mikey Geaney and James O’Donoghue did not play as his grandmother died. Geaney did come on in the second half when Kerry emptied the bench, bringing fresh legs into the fray. Dara Moynihan came in for O’Donoghue at the start and the Spa man really caught the eye. My Man of the Match was Seán O’Shea who lined out at centre forward. He excelled in general play and was chief scorer with six points. Three of these were from frees, one from a mark and one was a spectacular late point from the sideline in front of the stand.

This was similar to the famous Maurice Fitzgerald sideline point against the Dubs. What impressed me most about this new Kerry team was the intensity of their play. We can look forward to more of the same as Donie Buckley works with the 40-strong squad. They were really up for this game and did not allow Tyrone settle in any sectors of play. Scores were hard to come by and one must make allowance for slippery underfoot conditions after the dreadful overnight rain and storm on Saturday night. Seán O’Shea opened the scoring with a pointed 11th minute free and added two more in that first half. Tyrone could make no progress and their busiest player was goalkeeper Niall Morgan who made several outfield runs in an effort to get some momentum in to Tyrone’s play. It’s hard to believe it but their first score was a free by Morgan in the 27th minute. Mickey Harte will not be happy when he realises that they scored only two points from play in total.

Dara Moynihan was as busy as ever and was rewarded before half time with two excellent points from play. Tyrone improved a little in the second half with Darren McCurry slotting over 4 frees but this did not faze Kerry. Shane Ryan had an easy game in goal and did well with his-kick outs.

O’Donoghue and Moran to return NATIONAL LEAGUE: DIV 1

Cavan v Kerry Sunday at 2pm Breffni Park

| By Adam Moynihan Former Player of the Year James O’Donoghue and veteran midfielder David Moran are expected to return to

the Kerry line-up for Sunday’s clash with Cavan in Breffni Park. O’Donoghue was named in Peter Keane’s starting 15 against Tyrone but the Legion man withdrew on Sunday following the death of his grandmother. He is likely to come in at 15 and form a dangerous-looking two-man full forward line alongside Paul Geaney. Moran was a notable absentee as Kerry defeated Tyrone in their league opener but the Kerins O’Rahilly’s clubman has

since returned from his honeymoon and could add much-needed experience to Peter Keane’s relatively young team. With the third round of the Sigerson Cup taking place this past Wednesday and the quarter finals fixed for next Wednesday, a number of Kerry youngsters, including Seán O’Shea (UCC), Killian Spillane (UCC), Dara Moynihan (IT Tralee) and Gavin Crowley (IT Tralee), have a lot on their plates but expect Keane to name as strong a team as he

I was impressed by Jack Sherwood at full back. Mike Allen, his fellow Firies clubman, told me prior to the game that he never saw Sherwood play at full back with any team. It was a gamble to play a man who is more at home in the half back line, but it worked. He did very well there. possibly can. Cavan ran Galway close in their Round 1 game in Salthill, despite being reduced to 12 men for four minutes in the second half. Martin Reilly, Killian Brady and Killian Clarke were all black carded as Galway opened up a 13-8 lead. Late scores from Reilly, Cian Mackey and Conor Madden cut the deficit to two but Mickey Graham’s men ultimately fell short of what would have been a remarkable comeback. Kerry will be favourites to make it two from two but they won’t have it all their own way against a tough Cavan outfit.

Killarney soccer fans were treated to another great occasion at Celtic Park last Thursday night as League of Ireland Premier Division side Cork City came to town for a pre-season friendly against Celtic. The Hoops, who are currently 11 points clear at the top of the Kerry Premier A, held their own against a strong Cork team made up of senior stars, young players and trialists. James Tilley, who is a loan signing from Brighton, and second-half substitute James Ward put the visitors 2-0 up before experienced Celtic midfielder Gary Keane pulled one back with a close-

range header. The hosts tried in vain to force an equaliser but Ward was on hand again in the 72nd minute to seal the victory. Cork City finished second in the Premier Division last season and will be hoping to hit the ground running when their league campaign kicks off later this month.

| By Adam Moynihan Killarney Celtic are out of the Munster Junior Cup following an agonising penalty shootout defeat at the hands of Ballynanty Rovers of Limerick. The sides couldn’t be separated after 120 minutes of football but cheered on by a boisterous travelling support, Balla eventual-

ly prevailed after a tense shootout in which five of the nine penalties were missed. Celtic appeared to be in the driving seat when the visitors skied their first penalty but Danny Roche, Wayne Sparling and Stephen McCarthy each failed to beat

Ballynanty keeper Stephen McNamara as goals from David Donnan and Aaron Nunan gave Balla a 2-0 advantage. Roy Kelliher handed the hosts a stay of execution by saving Ballynanty’s fourth and when Conor McCarthy slotted his penalty home to make it 1-2, Celtic had a real chance of turning it around. The pressure was on Eddie Byrne but Balla’s fifth penalty taker held his nerve and struck his shot high into the corner,

beyond the reach of Kelliher in the Celtic goal. Ballynanty now advance to the fifth round where they will face either Leeds AFC (Munster Senior League) of Grattan United (Cork AUL). Meanwhile, Celtic’s attention turns to their Munster Champions Trophy semi-final against Newmarket Celtic. That game will take place on Sunday at 2pm in Clare.

The Killarney team are in blistering form at the moment having won 10 of their last 11 games by an average winning margin of 18.5 points. Catching Southern Conference leaders Ballincollig is still mathematically possible but they would need to win all their games and hope

the 16-2 Cork men to lose twice before the season is out. As it stands, a second place finish looks likely which means the Lakers would face Northern Conference leaders DBS Éanna in the semi-final. The Lakers would be confident enough of beating anyone on their day but avoiding Éanna would be preferable. The Dubliners are still undefeated after 16 games with an imposing points difference of +411. This Saturday’s opponents LYIT Donegal have the third worst record in the division (3-13) so the Lakers will be expected to win again and stretch their current winning streak to five.

The competition, which was renamed this season in honour of Killarney basketball legend Paudie O’Connor, is the premier cup competition for Women’s Super League teams in Ireland. Brunell trailed 19-13 at the end of the first despite Trojan work under the boards from Amy Waters and Made-

a sound performance from scrum half Donal Hickey laid the platform for Killarney’s scores, with tries from Pierce Slattery, Josh Coffey and Finn Kennelly (two of which were also clinically con-

1.02.2019 verted by Kennelly himself) leaving the score at 19-20 to Tralee with the clock ticking into red. Killarney weren’t done yet, however, and a dramatic match-clinching try by Pierce Slattery off a Donal Hickey assist sparked joyful celebrations from the entire Killarney squad. A word of praise must go towards a sporting and gracious Tralee team and management, in what was a fair and well-spirited encounter that was refereed expertly by Feargal Courtney. Credit must also go to Gemma Kelly, Mags Keogh and Heather Maclver for catering so generously for both teams afterwards.

Played in the magnificent facility of Barraduff’s Community Field, Killarney’s first game in Division 1 of the West Munster League ended in dramatic circumstances when a try with the clock in red secured a last-gasp victory. In truth Killarney rode their luck in this game, with numerous untypical handling errors. However, they say luck favours the brave and perhaps they were due some kindness from the gods after some hard luck in the earlier rounds in autumn, after which they had battled their way into the top tier of West Munster for the latter half of the season. It was Tralee who scored first through their very impressive number 8, whom Killarney found a handful throughout.

Killarney responded through some great running play by Josh Coffey and Donnacha Coffey and superb tackling by Scot Carlton on an impressive first effort paying in the front row. Killarney dominated possession and territory for much of the match, probing the width of the pitch trying to find gaps which Finn Kennelly and Shane O’Sullivan duly exposed with some well-executed line breaks. Clonakilty

17 | Killarney 12

The Killarney RFC U16s suffered their first defeat of the season last weekend, agonisingly conceding the winning score in the last play of this compelling game. Clonakilty were fighting for survival in the competition and Killarney travelled knowing this would be their toughest test to date. Killarney enjoyed early territorial advantage however wind, rain, and sticky underfoot conditions blunted their normal expansive approach. After repelling the visitors’ early advances, the home side gained a foothold and

showed ruthless ability to recycle ball through their imposing pack. At first the Killarney defence held out but in the 12th minute a quick tapped penalty found a soft spot and Clon opened the scoring. To their credit, Killarney rallied. After 20 minutes Killarney took the lead executing a penalty set play to perfection. Pádraic Talbot’s pacey injection caught the home defence napping and his blind side run pierced the home defence before passing to James Kennelly who raced around the defensive cover. Peter Walsh slotted the conversion and the half time score was 7-5 to Killarney.

With the elements at their back Clonakilty started the 2nd half in ravenous fashion and Killarney found themselves pinned back, defending furiously. This continued for the next 20 minutes. Clon eventually regained the lead 10 minutes from the end when they forced a turnover near the tryline and pounced on the loose ball for a crucial score. At this stage Killarney raised their game and displayed intense hunger and ability to launch an assault inside the Clon half. Eventually the home dam cracked and superb handling left Mikey Moriarty with an opening on the right wing. He bravely crashed through two defenders to score and with only three minutes left on the clock, the large travelling support were euphoric as a draw seemed the likely outcome.

However, ecstasy was soon to turn to agony. Knowing that an early exit from the competition loomed, the West Cork stronghold of rugby launched one last effort. Working their way close to the sideline and again recycling and pressing through their stronger pack they managed to touchdown in the corner right at the death. The final whistle brought scenes of elation and despair from two valiant sides that had given everything in an enthralling contest. As expected this group of talented teams will be difficult to separate and incredibly after three rounds of competition Killarney, Clonmel, Clonakilty, Nenagh and Cashel/Kilfeacle are all still technically able to qualify. On Sunday Killarney take on Cashel/Kilfeacle at 1pm in Barraduff. The boys will be eager to get back to winning ways and would welcome your vocal support.

Do you have €350 lying around to buy a sneaker that was realistically designed for professional athletes who will get as many pairs as they want for free? Then the Nike Adapt BB is for you. In 2016, Nike raffled of 84 limited edition Nike Mags, the self-lacing sneaker worn by Michael J Fox in the in the 1989 movie Back to the Future 2, raising $6.75 million for Parkinson’s research. This latest iteration is available for general sale although the price tag is likely to be a major deterrent for the casual sportsperson. The Adapt BBs do look cool, though. The stylish black and white shoes are fitted with custom-built motors and a gear train, which senses the tension in each foot and adjusts the lacing tightness to keep it snug without putting unnecessary pressure on the foot. Nike also plan to release the Nike Adapt app which will allow users to fine-tune their fit and switch between presets, as well as customise the lights, check battery levels and more. Presets can be allocated per customised colour and users can log different set-ups for timeouts, gameplay and warm-ups. The NBA recently gave Nike athletes the green light to wear the shoes in-game, although there are one or two caveats: the lights that appear on the Adapt BB’s midsole cannot be lit up when the player is on the court, and the players will not be permitted to make adjustments using

Making his first start since rejoining Citroen for 2019, Ogier took the lead on the second of Friday afternoon's three stages and did not relinquish it thereafter. But that did not represent how close the battle between the six-time champion and chief rival Neuville was, with the Hyundai driver never more than 5.8 seconds in arrears on Saturday or Sunday. Ogier consolidated his lead on Saturday, but Neuville started the final day of action strongly by slashing 1.1s from of an overnight deficit of 4.3s on the morning loop. A stage win by 2.8s on the penultimate test set Neuville up for a final-stage attack against Ogier, who encountered a throttle issue on SS14 and SS15 which applied small amounts of power while using the brakes on his C3. Neuville started the stage just 0.4s behind the rally leader and was 1.5s up on Ogier at split two, but the Citroen driver took control from there - eventually recording the second-fastest powerstage time to seal victory by 2.2s. The win is Ogier's seventh on the Monte Carlo Rally and sixth in a row.

RENAULT: BIGGER FUEL LIMIT NOT A “NO-BRAINER”

Renault Formula 1 executive director Marcin Budkowski believes the decision for teams to take the compromise of a bigger fuel tank under the new 2019 rules is not clear-cut. For this season the fuel limit has been raised from 105kg to 110kg to try to encourage less fuel-saving and more aggressive racing. However, not every race last season was fuel-limited and therefore some teams were not even using all of the previous,

lower allowance. Asked if it was a no-brainer to go 110kg or a disadvantage to have a bigger fuel tank and more weight, Budkowski said: "There were a number of races last year where people weren't taking 105kg, but were taking less. “The disadvantage of carrying more fuel is you're slower because the weight of the car is higher. It's always a compromise between the quantity of fuel which allows you to push harder during the race but slows you down in terms of weight. “There were a number of races where 105kg, filling the tank, wouldn't allow you to race properly and the amount of fuel saving teams had to do was significant. Couple this with some tyre saving and there were a number of races where drivers were really managing the pace rather than pushing the car.”

BOTTAS CAN ANNOY HAMILTON, ROSBERG CLAIMS

Nico Rosberg believes Valtteri Bottas is better than he showed in Formula 1 last season and has backed him to be "annoying" Lewis Hamilton "quite a lot" in 2019. Rosberg beat Hamilton to the 2016 world championship when they were teammates at Mercedes and then announced his shock retirement at the end of the year. The Sky F1 pundit believes the start of the year will be crucial to Bottas. "Valtteri is a lot better than he's been able to show recently," Rosberg told Sky Sports News. “With a new season starting again he has a good chance of establishing himself in a much stronger position and even really [be] annoying Lewis quite a lot.”
