Editor’s View

01.12.17 Eve Kelliher takes a look at the news that’s been getting Killarney and Kerry talking

Warning To Beware Of Distraction Thefts Words: Eve Kelliher

IN THE WAKE of what they describe as a “sinister and sophisticated distraction theft”, gardaí in Killarney are urging shoppers to be on their guard against criminals keen to empty pockets and bank accounts in the lead-up to the festive season. In an incident that has sickened the public, an elderly woman was targeted while going about her business in the

busy Tesco Deerpark store. The theft took place in broad daylight, at 1.30pm last Tuesday week, when the shopper was “shoulder-surfed” and her debit card PIN was watched by two men at the express checkout, say Gardaí. The pair then followed her out to her car. “One male asked her for directions and got out a map and distracted

her while the other male opened the passenger door and stole her debit card out of her handbag,” said Garda Michael Milner. “They withdrew large amounts of money from ATMs in Killarney town and purchased more items from an electrical store in Tralee.” Gardaí believe these were professional criminals and an investigation is underway with leads already into the identity

Credit Union Scoops Three International Awards

IT’S been hailed on the world stage as a “powerhouse of social enterprise” and Killarney Credit Union can take a well-deserved bow after it received three international awards for excellence. The accolades were presented by the International Credit Union Leadership Development and Education Foundation at an awards ceremony in Bloomsbury, London, on Saturday. Killarney was the category winner in the Edward Filene Credit Union Awards for Excellence – Great Britain and Ireland. It

was the outright winner in the category “Engaging in community outreach and mobilisation” and in the category “Serving as a financial incubator for seed, small and medium-sized businesses”. Not only that, it was the runner-up in the category “Use of the Media”. Pat Delaney, chairman of Killarney Credit Union, said: “We are honoured to be recognised for our efforts as a credit union by a panel of international business and credit union experts.” This is the first time in six years that there

of the two males. “Gardaí want locals to be vigilant of their PIN and chip card over the coming weeks up to Christmas and be cautious with strangers approaching asking for directions,” added Garda Milner. “There is a strong possibility that they could return to Killarney.” If you have any concerns, contact Killarney Gardaí on 064-6631222.

Award

has been an Irish credit union winner at the awards. The guest of honour and keynote speaker was Marlene Shiels, chief executive officer of Capital Credit Union Ltd, Edinburgh, who has recently been invested with the “Order of the British Empire” (OBE). The judges stated: “Killarney Credit Union is a powerhouse of social enterprise and community social and economic empowerment, passionate evangelists for what they do, and so has become the winning credit union for performance excellence in lending to owner-members to develop their businesses.” Left: Helen Courtney Power, Killarney Credit Union, accepting the awards from Marlene Shiels.

Play Is A Must-See TWO Killarney schools join forces to tread the boards this week as St Brendan’s College and St Brigid’s Secondary School stage “Our Day Out”. The curtain rose on the

classic play, by Willy Russell, yesterday and if you haven’t seen it, the good news is it will run again today, Friday, December 1, at Killarney Racecourse, at 2pm and 7.30pm.

Town Talk Operation Tarmac

Eve Kelliher reports on plans to improve safety at the Lewis Road/Killarney Bypass junction

Positive Response To Dawn Raids

THREE houses in the Woodlawn area were targeted by thieves last Friday evening. Cash and jewellery were taken from one house in Woodlawn Park and two houses in Ferndale Avenue. The raiders gained entry by forcing windows to the houses, which were unoccupied at the time. “We’re looking for any information that can help in this investigation and would appeal to anyone who noticed any unusual or suspicious movement of people or vehicles on Friday evening to contact Killarney Gardaí on 0646631222,” said a Garda spokesperson.

Minister For Health To Cut The Tape On Deer Lodge THE Minister for Health Simon Harris will be in town on Monday to perform he official opening of the Deer Lodge Mental Health Facility. The opening had originally been scheduled for earlier this month but was postponed. IT MADE national headlines last week shortly after we revealed how Gardaí seized a fleet of luxury vehicles including high-end BMW jeeps and BMW and Mercedes cars, valuable jewellery and over €100,000 in cash as part of Operation Tarmac in Killarney. Gardaí and members of the Criminal Assets Bureau swooped on 11 properties in dawn raids targeting what they describe as “bogus tradesmen”. It is also understood a number of bank accounts have been frozen arising out of the ongoing investigation. Superintendent Flor Murphy of Killarney Gardaí said the response locally to the ongoing investigation – one of the biggest ever conducted in Kerry – has been “remarkably positive”. “I and my colleagues greatly appreciate the support and goodwill that this operation has generated,” Supt Murphy told Killarney Advertiser. No arrests have been made and investigations are ongoing.

Solution On The Horizon For Danger Junction

KILLARNEY ADVERTISER welcomes news that a solution could be near for the accident blackspot at the Lewis Road junction on the N22 Killarney Bypass. We have tirelessly spearheaded the campaign for action at this danger junction throughout this year and now Transport Infrastructure Ireland has confirmed it will fund the development of planning and design for an appropriate solution at the junction. In recent weeks we opened up debate again in the wake of several accidents

at the blackspot. The Mayor of Killarney Municipal District Cllr Niall Kelleher and Suzanne Dennehy, the sister of Annette Mannix, who tragically lost her life in an accident on the Killarney Bypass in May, delivered petitions to the Department of Transport and to Transport Infrastructure Ireland in recent weeks. The petitions bore thousands of signatures calling for action. TII has approved a feasibility study to be carried out by Kerry County Council.

Mayor Kelleher said he hoped to see the solution delivered in 2018. “I am absolutely thrilled, I and the people of Killarney got behind the campaign that has led to TII actually taking notice of what we have to say,” Mayor Kelleher told Killarney Advertiser. Kerry TD Martin Ferris welcomed the development yesterday morning. “I hope that this will be the kickstart to this dangerous junction finally getting the necessary works to make it safer for all who use this road on a daily basis,” he said.

THE inaugural Killarney Mountain Festival was launched this week from its “basecamp” at Killarney House and Gardens. The Mayor of Killarney Municipal District Cllr Niall Kelleher unveiled details of the event which will run over the weekend of March 9-11 and is supported by Killarney Chamber of Tourism & Commerce and Kerry County Council. Festival chairperson Maureen Hegarty confirmed the event would be run in close association and with the support of the hugely successful and renowned Kendal Mountain Festival in the UK. “It

will celebrate, excite and inspire and will feature a multitude of exciting activities from adventure movies and documentaries, workshops, demonstrations, exhibitions, competitions, family fun activities, cultural interest, sample and featured hikes, scrambles and climbs, musical entertainment, and inspiring guest speakers,” she said. Cinema Killarney will be the main screening venue for a programme of mountain and adventure films and a photographic competition is already running on the Killarney Mountain Festival Facebook page, which is open to everyone.

Applause For Scarlett KILLARNEY businesses took a bow during the week as the 2017 Killarney Retailer of the Year Awards unfolded at the International Hotel. The awards, sponsored by AIB, were organised by the retail members of Killarney Chamber of Commerce. The first prize on the night went to ladies fashion boutique Scarlett of Scott Street, while second and third places went to J Mac IT & Office Solutions and Daly’s SuperValu respectively. “Scarlett has enjoyed an amazing first year in business and has been extremely well received by both locals and tourists alike,” said Karen Healy of Scarlett. Tanya O’Shea of Eason Killarney said the feedback from the awards had been “exceptionally positive”. Retail consultant group Crest Mystery Shopping was commissioned by the Killarney Retail Group at Killarney Chamber, to carry out mystery shopping trips at participating stores. Michele Cawley of Crest said the team of mystery shoppers was very impressed.

A weekend programme of trekking our county’s magnificent mountains and valleys with Piaras Kelly of Kerry Climbing will also be part of adventure. Guest speakers will include British mountaineers Stephen Venables and Andy Cave, and Scottish wilderness hiker Cameron McNeish. Richard Hilliard, Killarney, who was one of the crew that rowed a currach from Derry to Iona in 1963 to mark the 1400th anniversary of St Columba’s same journey, will also give a very interesting presentation and historian and musician Thomas O’Sullivan will be another local speaker.

FOLLOWING its spectacularly successful Christmas Craft & Food Fair last weekend, Killarney Outlet Centre is leading the way in the festive stakes yet again. And the magical momentum continues this weekend as the famous man in the red suit will be taking up residence in the Killarney Outlet Centre for the first three weekends in December on Saturdays and Sundays. Families can visit Santa in his winter log cabin on the ground floor from this weekend on Saturday, December 2, and Sunday, December 3, and on December 9 and 10 and December 16 and 17 from 1pm to 6pm each day. Every family will receive their own souvenir photograph of their visit and all children will take home a special Christmas parcel from Santa. There was an electric atmosphere last weekend for the craft and food fair as visitor numbers were up by 2,000 on last year’s event. “The fair was very successful. We were very pleased with the turnout and there was a wonderful variety of stalls,” said Killarney Outlet Centre general manager Paul Sherry. Among those displaying were the Friends of the Children of Chernobyl and the Kerry Crafty Ladies who were raising funds for Kerry Hospice Foundation. Paul added: “There is an extra special atmosphere in Killarney at this time of year due to the Christmas in Killarney festival, one of the premium Christmas festivals in the country.”

December 18, with three bumper prizes to be won as well as gift vouchers. To enter, customers who purchase in participating stores can fill out an entry form and be included in the grand draw on December 19.

THE Killarney Lions Club will be out in force next Friday, December 8, for the club’s annual Christmas hamper street collection. The big-hearted Lions distribute 90 hampers to people in need in the Killarney area every Christmas. “The club has been donating Christmas hampers for 30-odd years now and we are very grateful to the people of Killarney who always give so generously,” said Liam Kealy of the Killarney Lions Club.

Emergencies Only, Pleads Overcrowded Hospital

THE emergency department at University Hospital Kerry (UHK) is currently experiencing significant overcrowding due to a very high volume of presentations and subsequent admissions. Management at the hospital is asking members of the public to only attend in the case of a genuine emergency, advising that, where possible, a GP or out-of-hours service be consulted in the first instance. Every effort is being made to ensure that each patient receives appropriate care in the shortest time frame possible, stated UHK, which added: “The management at UHK apologises for any inconvenience caused.”

Glebe Parking Solution Could Be Worth Millions To Town OUR solution to Killarney’s parking shortage which brings the town to a standstill during busy times provoked huge debate. We presented our artist’s impression for a multi-storey car park for the Glebe car park. At the moment there is a plan is to develop a bus/car park site on Rock Road. But is this the best way forward? Building underground isn’t feasible as Killarney has numerous underground waterways – so the only way is up! Plans for development of the Glebe car park have been around since the 1990s but never sanc-

tioned. Most people responded positively to the idea, welcoming it as a boost for the town centre, and others queried the size and cost. While our design would triple the existing space at the Glebe it would not be an eyesore, as it would be no higher than other high buildings in Killarney such as the tourist office. This car park, with its appealing mall façade, would also offer scope for social housing and apartments as well as presenting retail options along the outer perimeter of the facility. These shops would generate revenue which would help pay for the project.

Christmas In Killarney

It’s A Kind Of Magic

Words: Eve Kelliher Pics: Valerie O’Sullivan and Dylan Clifford WE WERE all walking in a winter wonderland last Saturday night as Santa and his buddies arrived in town to switch on the Christmas lights. The first Magic parade of 2017 proved to be a spellbinding start to the festive season. Christmas cheer filled the air nice and early as excited pupils from Killarney schools and drama groups marched proudly behind the spectacular floats. Thousands of youngsters and the young at heart, bundled up in hats, scarves and coats, lined the streets, with many availing of the opportunity to post that all-important letter to Santa Claus via the giant post-box in Old Market Lane. The man in red himself was joined by a host of very well-received guests, includ-

ing his friends Minnie and Mickey Mouse as well as Frozen stars Anna, Elsa and Olaf. And you can enjoy the action again on December 2, 9, 16, 23 and 31 at 6pm. The parade route is taking in Beech Road, Mission Road, East Avenue Road, College Street, Plunkett Street, Main Street and New Street and as always you’ll get a great view of Santa all along the parade route. Santa is being very generous with his time this Christmas by agreeing to take part in a number of parades before he jets back to Lapland to finalize his naughty or nice list. Santa has informed the Christmas in Killarney committee that there is still time to make the nice list if you are on your best behaviour for December.

NEWS

01.12.17

How Christmas Was Saved THERE were sighs of relief across the streets of the town as it transpired that the Christmas in Killarney festival and associated parades and events would take place after all this year. Fears had been rife that Christmas would, in effect, be cancelled in Killarney as an appeal was made in September to ensure the future of the Christmas in Killarney festival, Killar-

ney Advertiser exclusively revealed at the time. Matters were in “dire straits” in the words of Kate O’Leary, chairperson of the Christmas in Killarney committee. Kate made an impassioned plea for support for the festival two months ago. Committee members devoted in excess of 60 hours last year to trying to secure sponsorship, said Kate. She appealled to businesses, schools and families to get behind Christmas in Killarney. “It is a month-long festival and it definitely has the biggest crowd-drawing power of any of our festivals,” she said. “To even contemplate Christmas in Killarney without the Christmas in Killarney festival is unbearable, it’s unthinkable.” She outlined how the committee needed raise €30,000 just to cover expenses that have rolled over from year to year and at best aimed to raise €90,000.

Words: Eve Kelliher

WHEN our Christmas correspondent Isaac Casey got the scoop of the decade in the form of an exclusive interview with Santa Claus we knew it would generate massive interest across the globe – and yesterday views of the video had soared well beyond 10,000 and counting. It’s not surprising considering this talented young reporter’s insightful line of questioning, backed up by impressive research, which ensured the film was an

absolute must-view. Isaac, 10, got to quiz the man in red himself in our Chatroom where Santa shared many of his secrets – as viewers we were all charmed to learn how St Nicholas unwinds after his roundthe-world whirl of gift-gifting on Christmas Eve, for instance. It’s really set the scene for Christmas – I think I might just go and have another look at this magical video, which you can find on our website killarneyadvertiser.ie and on our Facebook page.

We’re Hitting All The Right Notes WELL, tonight we have a treat i store for you with the very first broadcast of Killarney Advertiser’s Carpool Killarney-oke. Local singer and musician Donal Shine talks to Kieran Healy, our very own answer to James Corden, about how long he has been performing around town. Tune in to join the pair on their drive around Killarney. It’s a must-see as you’ll find out Donal’s unique take on his first gig as well as

his thoughts on the artist he would most like to meet. Most intriguingly, the performer reveals how he got his nickname the Reverend Donal Shine. Not only that, but Donal tells Kieran about a gig he’ll never forget….all while singing along to some of the songs he’s well known for! This is a must-see – check out our Facebook page and our website killarneyadvertiser.ie at 9pm tonight.

A Weekly Round-Up Of News + Views From Kerry And Around

Taoiseach Appoints Simon Coveney As Tánaiste THE Taoiseach Leo Varadkar appointed Minister for Foreign Affairs Simon Coveney as the new Tánaiste yesterday to replace Frances Fitzgerald. Mr Varadkar announced a number of Cabinet changes in the Dáil on Thursday. Heather Hum-

phreys will become Minister for Business, Enterprise and Innovation while Dublin Rathdown TD Josepha Madigan is the new Minister for Arts, Heritage and the Gaeltacht. The changes follow the resignation of Ms Fitzgerald as Tánaiste and Minister for Business following a week of political pressure.

Reaction

Kerry TDs React To Frances Fitzgerald Resignation WHILE a snap pre-Christmas general election has been averted following the resignation of Tánaiste Frances Fitzgerald on Tuesday, politicians in Kerry are already planning for an election early next year. The former Tánaiste received a standing ovation from Fine Gael colleagues in Leinster House. Taoiseach Leo Varadkar said he expects Ms Fitzgerald to return to a high level of Irish politics once she is vindicated at the Charleton Tribunal. It was expected that Mr Varadkar could face a backlash at the meeting for his handling of the row over the treatment of Garda whistleblower Mau-

Trump Corner Theresa May: Trump Was ‘Wrong’ To Retweet Far-Right Posts BRITISH Prime Minister Theresa May has said Donald Trump was “wrong” to retweet posts from a British far-right group. But she stressed the “special relationship” between Britain and the US was “in both our nations’ interests” and should continue. Ms May rejected calls to cancel a state visit by the US president. Speaking on a visit to Jordan, she said: “An invitation for a state visit has been extended and has been accepted. We have yet to set a date.” Quizzed about Mr Trump’s tweets,

she said: “The fact that we work together does not mean that we’re afraid to say when we think the United States has got it wrong, and be very clear with them. “And I’m very clear that retweeting from Britain First was the wrong thing to do.” On Wednesday the US president retweeted three videos posted by the British far-right group. When a Downing Street spokesman said he had been “wrong” to do so the president hit back: “Don’t focus on me, focus on the destructive Radical Islamic Terrorism that is taking place within the United Kingdom. We are doing just fine!”

rice McCab; however there was no dissent. Minister Fitzgerald said she is putting the national interest ahead of her career. Fine Gael TD and Junior Minister for Sport Brendan Griffin, is welcoming the news that a general election has been averted at this time. He says he looks forward to the Disclosures Tribunal establishing all facts relevant to the treatment of Garda whistleblower Maurice McCabe. Fianna Fáil TD John Brassil said the former Tánaiste did the right thing in the end. Independent TDs Michael Healy-Rae and Danny Healy-Rae welcomed the announcement, saying a general election at this time would not be good for the country. Sinn Fein TD Martin Ferris said the former Tánaiste should have resigned earlier.

Opinion

Words: Eve Kelliher

Willie O’Dea In Tune With National Sentiment IT was regarded as an election that nobody wanted at a time that nobody wanted it. And while sighs of relief have greeted the stalling of a crisis pre-festive season general election there remains one small gripe – wouldn’t we have liked to have seen of Willie O’Dea and his fellow candidates serenading us on the doorsteps?

But it has to be said: The Fianna Fáil veteran succinctly and hilariously summed up the sentiments of the nation when he quipped: “The last thing I want to do is be going around to the doors in Limerick during Christmas competing with carol singers ... I hope a general election can be avoided.” All together now – “Good tidings we bring to you and your kin….”

Minister Signs Medicinal Cannabis Licence For Ava Barry THE Minister for Health Simon Harris has signed a licence for Cork girl Ava Barry to access medicinal cannabis. Mr Harris was responding to Fianna Fáil leader Micheál Martin who told the Dáil that seven-year-old Ava, whose mother Vera Twomey had been campaigning for her, was now accessing a programme

through a Dutch neurologist. Ava has a rare, drug-resistant form of epilepsy called Dravet Syndrome, which can result in up to 20 seizures a day. Her mother said: “I just want to thank everybody for the support and everything. We’ll be home for Christmas and she’s doing really, really well.”

Killarney To Honour Enda Today

Dog’s Dinner ANIMAL lovers can now dine out with their dog after a rule banning them from restaurants has been lifted. The law banning cats and dogs in restaurants and cafés was intro-

duced in the 1950s – but has now been repealed. The Food Safety of Ireland (FSAI) has confirmed the move. However, the law remains in place where food is being prepared or stored.

Move Over, John Lewis: Kerry Video Melts Hearts WELL, it’s certainly giving retail giants such as John Lewis a run for their money in the heartstring-tugging stakes. KILLARNEY will today bestow its top honour on former Taoiseach and Fine Gael leader Enda Kenny, who will be inducted into the Order of Innisfallen. The longest serving TD in Dáil Éireann, he will be celebrated at a reception in Killarney House which was extensively refurbished, at a cost of approximately €10 million, during his term in office. The award will be presented by Mayor of the Killarney Municipal District, Cllr Niall Kelleher, and Killarney Chamber of Tourism and Commerce President Paul O’Neill. Organisers say Mr Kenny will be honoured in recognition of the service he gave to his country and to acknowledge the fact that he has been a great friend to Killarney down through the years. He is being honoured also for spearhead-

ing the administration that was responsible for reducing the tourism VAT rate to 9% and, by that act, he helped create and safeguard thousands of jobs in the country’s most important and vibrant industry. Mr Kenny has great affection for and close bonds with Killarney. He has a holiday home in Kilcummin and visits the area regularly. He also takes part in the Ring of Kerry Charity Cycle every year. The Mayo native was first elected to the Dáil in 1975 following the sudden death of his TD father, Henry. He was elected Taoiseach in 2011 and remained at the helm until he stepped down in June of this year. • Who do you think is deserving of an award thanks to their contribution to Killarney over the years? Yacht Abandoned Off Newfoundland Found On Kerry Beach

‘I apologise’ -

McGregor Given €400 Speeding Fine A RACING yacht abandoned off Newfoundland six months ago has washed ashore on a beach near An Clochán in west Kerry. The nine-metre Illumia 12 had been lost at sea since 11 June when her Italian skipper was rescued by a Canadian coastguard helicopter 650km southeast of Newfoundland. Illumia 12 had been taking part in a transatlantic race when the vessel was damaged. Michele

Zambelli spent 12 hours waiting to be rescued after the boat lost its keel and had started taking on water. The upturned hull was spotted on Tuesday evening by a surfer off Fermoyle beach and Valentia Coastguard was notified. An initial inspection identified her as the abandoned yacht. Members of the Dingle coast guard assisted in removing the vessel from the beach to a secure location.

UFC CHAMPION Conor McGregor has been given a €400 speeding fine after earlier being compelled to turn up in court, reports the Irish Independent. The ‘Notorious’ star was due to appear in Blanchardstown District Court earlier on Thursday morning to face the charge but sent a solicitor to handle the case in his absence. He was charged with exceeding the 100kph speed limit on the N7 Naas Road at Rathcoole on March 31 this year. At a previous hearing Judge Miriam Walsh said if any defendant wants to make an argument, that person must be attend court themselves or send a legal representative. Solicitor Graham Kenny said McGregor was pleading guilty and said that when he re-

turned the fixed penalty notice issued to him he had mistakenly neglected to put his middle name ‘Anthony’ on it. But Judge Walsh said that if McGregor wanted to offer mitigation or make a case he “has to be here”. Mr Kenny said he would call McGregor at once. McGregor arrived at the court in a sports BMW wearing a green Adidas tracksuit Judge Walsh said she was accepting the guilty plea. Judge Walsh then fined McGregor €400 and gave him two months to pay, adding that he could “pay by instalments”. Asked about recent accusations that he had allegedly been involved in a fight in a pub he replied: “It’s all boll**ks” and “I thought I was in bleedin’ Lanzarote”.

Killarney Held A Special Place In Eamon’s Heart

Joseph P Kennedy Junior is pictured on horseback during his trip through the Gap of Dunloe in 1937. He was accompanied by his sister Kathleen. He was the eldest of the Kennedy family and his father Joe had aspirations for Joe Junior to become President of the USA. (Joe Jr’s brother John F. fulfilled that ambition). He was a naval pilot in WW11 and was killed in action at age 29 in 1944. His sister Kathleen Kennedy Cavendish was killed in an air crash at age 28 in 1948. Pic: Supplied by Moments in Time

IT WAS with great sadness one heard of the passing of Eamon Corcoran, Caherciveen, on November 12. Killarney held a special place in his heart, where he was well known and respected, principally through his involvement with the annual Ring of Kerry Charity Cycle. For nigh on 20 years Eamon was the official photographer for the cycle, travelling around the Ring taking pictures of cyclists at the food stops. He also covered the presentation night each October in The Gleneagle Hotel. He composed albums of all pictures delivered at no charge; it was his way, his hobby. He was ever present at the Kerry Person of the Year in Dublin with his sister Maureen.

Love in a cold climate Words: Eve Kelliher MAYBE we’re biased, being firm fans of all things Christmas, but winter engagements and winter weddings seem to have an extra-special sparkle. Wedding of the Week

Christmas Engagement Leads To Big Day CHRISTMAS is always a special time for newlyweds Aisling Darmody and Dan O’Sullivan as it was in a festive New York that they got engaged, in December 2015. Dan popped the question at the Rockefeller Center, some six years after they first met. Both accountants, their paths crossed, literally, at the doorstep of Moriarty & Murphy Chartered Certified Accountants, Killarney, where they both worked together in August 2008. The bride, from Faha, and groom, from Dromin, Fossa, were wed in the Prince of Peace Church in Fossa, by Fr Kevin Sullivan, and held their reception in Ballyseede Castle, Tralee. Helping lead the celebrations were Aisling’s parents Kay and Tony Darmody and Dan’s mother and father Joan and Kevin O’Sullivan. Aisling’s sister Karen Darmody was chief bridesmaid with her friend Hayley O’Keeffe as bridesmaid while Dan’s brothers Kevin and Derry O’Sullivan were best man and groomsman. The bride’s niece Kate Darmody and godson David Darmody enjoyed taking on key roles as flowergirl and pageboy. The bridal hairstyling was by Pat O’Neill, with makeup by Marilyn McSweeney. Ian Cronin of IC Photo Studio captured the big day on camera while Sky Eye Drone was the videographer. The newlyweds started their honeymoon in Las Vegas before embarking on a Caribbean cruise and finished the holiday at Orlando, Florida. The bride is a tax analyst with Johnson & Johnson and the groom is a business unit finance controller at Eli Lilly. The newlyweds will reside in Douglas, Cork.

Conor Myles and Dan O’Connor,

Partners of Terence F. Casey & Company Solicitors, 99 College Street, Killarney, present information on legal issues

GARDA VETTING The National Vetting Bureau (Children and Vulnerable Persons) Acts, 2012 – 2016 which came into effect on the 29th of April 2016 makes it mandatory for people that work with children or vulnerable adults to be vetted by the Garda Siochana National Vetting Bureau. The National Vetting Bureau deals with requests from certain prospective employees or other workers. The Bureau carries out vetting for relevant organisations that are registered with it. Under the Acts, any person whose work or activity involves access to children or vulnerable adults must be vetted. This includes staff, volunteers and those in student placement working for a relevant organisation. When a prospective worker is vetting by the National Vetting Bureau any criminal record is disclosed to the authorised liaison person in the registered organisation. A disclosure will include details of all convictions and pending prosecutions and a statement of specified information, if any, or a statement that there is no criminal record or specified information relating to the person being vetted. Specified information is also known as soft information. This is information other than criminal convictions where such information leads to a bona fide belief that a person poses a threat to children or vulnerable people. Under Section 14A of the Acts, convictions for certain minor offences in the District Court that are over seven

years old are not included in the Disclosure. This is part of a filtration system. There are certain offences however which are not covered by this. In general, when you apply for a job that does not require Garda Vetting, details of criminal convictions must be given. However, if you have been convicted of an offence covered by Section 5 of the Criminal Justice (Spent Convictions and Certain Disclosures) Act, 2016 you do not have to disclose the conviction after seven years except in certain circumstances. If an offence is committed while a person was under the age of 18 the offence can be automatically removed from the record as if never committed once certain conditions are met. Under the Data Protection Acts, a person has the right to access personal data that is held by An Garda Siochana. A written request or completed form should be sent to the National Vetting Bureau of the Garda Siochana together with fee of €6.35 together with photocopy, passport or birth cert or driving licence or other identification. A copy of the disclosure will be sent direction to you for your personal use. The above is a discussion piece only and does not purport to be legal advice and should not be relied upon as such. In respect of any specific circumstances, you should consult your solicitor to obtain specific legal advice and Terence F. Casey & Company do not accept any responsibility for any errors or omissions herein.

My Best Friend... SOME would say diamonds are a girl’s best friend... But I don’t agree. Now don’t get me wrong, I love to sparkle on stage as much as the next diva, but those stones and gems don’t give me the love I get from my four-legged friend. Anyone that knows me will say that I am obsessed with two things; Christmas and dogs! My best friend is a miniature schnauzer/bichon frise cross named Kerri. You might be wondering why I am writing about my pooch in a space normally reserved for all things arts, but let me explain... My little buddy Kerri is like my shadow, wherever I am, she is there too, and this includes my music room. She lies on the couch next to the piano while I practice. She particularly likes my morning practice time as she gets some sun on her fur!

THE Killarney and District Motor Club will host the Rentokil Initial Killarney Historic Rally this weekend. Ireland’s only event to cater solely for historic rally cars and nightstage rallying, it will run tomorrow, Saturday, December 2. The rally commences this Friday evening with a ceremonial start on Main Street, Killarney, at 7pm. The real action gets underway on Saturday morning with the iconic Moll’s Gap stage. The rally will count as the first round of the 2018 Irish Tarmac Historic Rally Championship; final round of the 2017 Southern Four Rally Championship; and final round of The 2017 HRCR - Stage Masters Challenge. Event clerk of the course Kevin Flannery and his

Killarney and District Motor Club team have built this year’s rally around the competitor. “We recognise the competitors attraction to the event and the uniqueness that the Killarney Historic Rally holds worldwide, offering the competitor 110km of competitive stages, centralised service area at Liebherr Container Cranes, Killarney, and the popular feature of the final stage to be run in the darkness,” said Kevin. The event provides a welcome endof-season boost to Ireland’s tourism capital and is worth millions to the local economy. The Gleneagle Hotel, involved in the rally since 1979, will once again serve as rally headquarters. There will also be extensive television coverage of this year’s event.

Ferrari F1 team lose their long time title sponsor, Santander for next season. Aston Martin could become an engine supplier to F1 when the engine regulations change in 2021. Robert Kubica tests for Williams F1 in Abu Dhabi this week.

Basketball

New Hoops For St Paul’s THERE was good news for St Paul’s Basketball Club this week when Brendan Griffin, Minister of State at the Department of Transport, Tourism and Sport, announced that the club has been allocated a grant of €5,500 from the Government Sports Capital Fund for the purchase of four sure shoot professional basketball hoops. It is a huge boost for the club which caters for over 400 juvenile members and the new hoops will be used specifically for the St Paul’s U-8 and U-10 teams. These special hoops are adjustable to eight foot which is ideal for this younger age group to improve their shooting skills. The sure shoot hoops are also much safer and reliable than the basic hoops that the club had been using.

St Paul’s Basketball Club Secretary Kathy Shine and Development Officer Padraig Weldon had completed and submitted the application on behalf of the club. Padraig Weldon expressed his gratitude to Minister Brendan Griffin for the grant allocation and said that the money will be well spent. “It is just another part of jigsaw for the future development of the club and to strengthen our underage structure which is growing every year. Having the correct equipment to cater for the juvenile players is so important and Minister Griffin has been very supportive of the work we are doing in the development and promotion of basketball among young players in Killarney,” he said.

Fundraiser In Sheila’s Memory Raises €57,000

FRIENDS and family of a popular Killarney lady the late Sheila Mac Kelliher have generated an impressive €57,000 for charity. The funds were presented to Kerry Palliative Care at a function in Scotts Hotel recently. A coffee morning, golf classic and walk through Killarney National Park were organised in February

and May in memory of the late Sheila Mac Kelliher. Record numbers of supporters turned out in force in February at the coffee morning, in Kayne’s Bar in The Dromhall Hotel, while over two days in May, keen golfers teed up at Killarney Golf Course for a golf classic and walkers put their best foot forward during the walk.

22ND ANNIVERSARY

ACKNOWLEDGMENT

CRONIN

CROSSAN

COURTNEY

Mary Courtney Lissivane West Milltown Co. Kerry 1st December A Birthday Tribute to our Mother We celebrate the day Our Lord gave you life Your birth, your struggle, Your courage in strife Like the flower bulb pushing Through the frozen earth Your colour, your bloom Brought richness and wealth. You said life was like seasons, Where we must all learn to know Spring for birth and the time to sow Summer for sunshine, colour and growth August for harvesting without the boast Winter for turf fires And the Christmas roast. You departed from us quickly, It was like blowing out a candle, It was sudden, it was more than What we could handle But how can we forget How your spirit left us Humbled by how and why It soared majestically above us. Let’s focus not on what we have lost But rather the gain Your memory, your love Will forever remain Let your words of wisdom resonate And eternally sustain Happy Birthday Mum despite our cost Say hello to Archangel Michael And protect our lost Look down upon us And bestow us with grace And ensure our hearts stay pure whatever our fate. As we remember you dearly On your birthday. Forever in our hearts you will stay Love from the Courtney, Brosnan And O’Sullivan families xxx

24TH & 3RD ANNIVERSARY CREMIN In loving memory of James Cremin, who died on the 21st November 1993 and Margaret Cremin who died on the 25th of November 2014, late of 6 O’Sullivan’s Place, Killarney. We hold you close within our hearts And there you shall remain To walk with us throughout our lives Until we meet again.

In loving memory of Allison Crossan, Late of Fauldhouse, Scotland, who passed away on 22nd October 2017.

He never looked for praises He was never one to boast He just went quietly working For the ones he loved the most.

Say a prayer for my lovely Auntie Allison, who sadly died recently. She lit up every room that she walked into. R.I.P From Jim.

His dreams were seldom spoken His wants were very few And most of the time his worries Went unspoken too. He was there, a firm foundation Through all our storms of life A sturdy hand to hold on to In times of stress and strife.

Memorial Mass is on St. Stephen’s Day.

In loving memory of a wonderful mother, grandmother and greatgrandmother Kathleen Griffin, 21, Park Drive who died on 4th December, 2015 Mother God looked around his garden And saw an empty space, He then looked down upon the earth And saw your tired face. I humbly beg and urgently ask the Father in thy Name that my prayer be granted (Make request here) Oh Jesus who has said Heaven and Earth shall pass away but my word shall not pass away through the intercession of Mary, the most Holy Mother. Garden Magic Words: Debby Looney

So Much To Do IS THERE ever a time of year when there is nothing to do outside? If there is, please let me know! Looking out I see leaves that seem to come from nowhere, shrubs which are untidy, muck where there should be gravel… the list goes on! Pruning all those straggly shrubs down to a controllable size is one job I find very satisfying indeed! More or less all deciduous shrubs may be pruned now, unless you want to leave old flowers, of, for example, hydrangeas, on for a winter display. This is especially important for roses, as they are prone to their roots being loosened by wind rock. Take a walk around the garden and do a little check. Are all trees well staked and secure? Are fences and windbreaks sound, or do they need a repair here and there – that old adage of a stitch in time comes to mind! Are any glasshouses safe from falling branches? Do they need to be washed and disinfected? Terracotta pots may be put inside to prevent frost damage, even though many are frost resistant. You can also put a layer of bubble wrap between the soil in the pot and the outside of the pot. This will allow the soil to expand if it freezes, without damage to the pot. November is an excellent time to plant bare rooted hedging and trees also. Most garden centres will have a good supply of hedging, and it is very cost effective to buy them this way. Another advantage is that you will probably not need to worry about watering! When planting your hedge, dig a hole in which the roots will comfortable fit. Add some general fertiliser to the bottom of the hole and cover with some compost. Place your plant in and backfill with a mixture if soil and compost. Do not plant too deep! If necessary stake, or erect a wind barrier for protection. If the plant rocks too much during the winter, two things will happen. The roots will break off and the soil will loosen and the hole you dug for it will fill with water, causing the plant to rot. All in all, even though we are not gardening in the fun sense of the word, there is still plenty to keep us outside in the fresh air!

Life Through The Lens Of The Gospels MATTHEW 22:15-21: The story sees a mixture of religion and politics, a potentially explosive combination. Jesus does not ask us to avoid politics, but that our involvement in the affairs of the world be informed by the perspective of the reign of God. How does the gospel give you a vision of how your involvement in society should be? Pharisees and Herodians were not natural allies but a shared dislike of Jesus brought them together in an attempt to discredit him. Perhaps you experience the same opposition in society today when you

THE greatest evil is that in our own hearts, but God is greater than our hearts. When we sin against our brother or sister we sin against God. Charles de Foucauld spoke of seeing Jesus in every

The Deep End

FROM a very young age, children tend to hear a lot about royalty. Popular fairytales, many of them around for hundreds of years, tell tales of beautiful princesses, brave princes, and noble, wise, old kings and queens. They transport children into a world of extravagant palaces and riches beyond anything they could imagine. Modern children’s stories and cartoons continue the fascination, but many now turn the traditional stereotypes on their head. Princesses no longer wait around to be rescued, but take their fate into their own hands. Princes don’t necessarily want to be brave or to become the next king. In the time of Jesus kings were powerful rulers, and

profess to being a Catholic. Jesus did not get into an argument with them but simply professed his belief in the priority of God in his life. What have you found helpful in bearing witness to the fact that you are still a Catholic? Jesus recognises that we can be faced with conflicting claims for attention. He does not tell us how to solve that dilemma, but challenges us to make sure that our allegiance to God takes priority. When have you been faced with a conflict of loyalties? What helped you to get your priorities right? John Byrne, Veritas person: ‘Above all see Jesus in every person and consequently treat each one as an equal and as a brother or sister, but also with great humility, respect and selfless generosity.’ The other person is the brother or sister for whom Jesus died (1 Cor 8:11f). John O’Brien OFM, Veritas some were tyrants. We know from earlier in Matthew’s Gospel that King Herod was capable of brutal acts. There were expectations too about the great Messianic King who would lead a rebellion and establish his kingdom on earth. The king that Jesus talks about turns these images upside down. He is a fair judge, a shepherd who looks after his flock, inviting all who act with justice and generosity to take their place in his kingdom. He is also in solidarity with the “least” of his people. Who ever heard of a king who knows what it’s like to be in need of food, clothing or company? But Jesus is a different sort of royalty. His kingdom is not based on power or riches, but charity, compassion and forgiveness. Tríona Doherty, Veritas

Listless Lakers Can’t Match Mathews A tough weekend for the Lakers leaves their league aspirations in real jeopardy, writes Adam Moynihan

National League: Division 1 Scotts Lakers 56 Fr Mathews 67 The Scotts Lakers were unable to follow up their dramatic overtime win against Ulster University as they fell to a crushing 11-point defeat to Fr Mathews of Cork at the Killarney Sports and Leisure Centre on Saturday night. Losing is one thing but the manner of the defeat will certainly have disappointed new head coach Cormac O’Donoghue. His team managed just 56 points and faded badly in the second half as Mathews eased to an all-toocomfortable victory. The hosts went into this one without the services of Pádraig Lucey and the 6’8” forward was sorely missed as the Lakers were forced to rely entirely on Andrew Fitzgerald and Antuan Bootle for size in the paint. Fitzgerald played 36 minutes while Bootle was on the floor for 27, which in turn meant less game time for in-form American Justin Tuason.

The Lakers still managed to hold their own early on and scores from Fitzgerald and Bootle had them five points ahead as the first quarter drew to a close. With just a few seconds left,

talented Mathews guard Marcus Thomas, who scored 61 points in his previous outing, finally found his shot and knocked down a three to make it 15-13 at the horn. Thomas tied it up with a nice move and finish at the start of the second but Mark Greene responded with a quick three for the Lakers. Neither team were really flowing offensively and it was shaping up to be a low-scoring game, which in theory should have suited the Lakers. Prior to Saturday, Mathews had been averaging 93 points per game. The Corkmen finally got their noses in front with 2:40 left in the half when the impressive Mike McGinn nailed a three to make it 22-23 but the Lakers finished in the ascendancy thanks to five straight points from Justin Tuason. Carrying a four-point advantage into the second half, the Lakers would have been hoping to push on and assert their dominance but the third quarter has been a major problem all year and, unfortunately, this game was no exception. The Lakers managed just five points in the entire period as some excellent play from 6’6” centre Paul O’Driscoll saw Mathews ease into an eightpoint lead. Things improved offensively in the fourth but Mathews always had the Lakers at arm’s length. Antuan Bootle and Dan Griffin chipped away at the lead from time to time but, in truth, the outcome was never really in doubt. This defeat, coupled with the loss to Kilkenny the following day, means the Lakers need to win both of their remaining games if they’re to have any hope of securing a top half finish. They would also need results elsewhere to go their way. After Christmas, the top seven teams (Division 1A) will play each other one more time to see who will be crowned league champions while the bottom seven (Division 1B) will play off for the Shield. The Lakers are currently ninth and while I’m sure the players would love a shot at Division 1A and the league title, a place in Division 1B wouldn’t be the end of the world. It’s the club’s first season back in the National League so competing for the Shield, and possibly having a good cup run (they play Fr Mathew’s in the quarter final this Sunday), would surely be considered a decent start.

Scotts Lakers To Face Fr Mathews Again This Weekend IN NATIONAL League Basketball Division One, Scotts Lakers St Paul’s Killarney will face Fr Mathews of Cork again this weekend in the quarterfinal of the President’s National Cup in Coláiste Chríost Ri, Cork, on Sunday, December 3, at 3pm. Fr Mathews will be firm favourites after last week and home advantage is another boost to them. Scotts Lakers will probably be without Padraig Lucey again for this one but they

are still more than capable of matching up well against Mathews and getting the desired result. It was a disappointing weekend for Scotts Lakers suffering a double defeat at home to Fr Mathews on Saturday (Scotts Lakers St Paul’s Killarney 56, Fr Mathews Cork 67) and away to Paris Texas Kilkenny on Sunday (Paris Texas Kilkenny 86, Scotts Lakers St Paul’s Killarney 72). Like many of their outings so far this season, these were two more games that the Killarney side were more than capable of winning but they struggled

to reproduce the great performance that they produced in last week’s thrilling overtime win against Ulster Elks. The Lakers were slightly under strength in both outings with the influential Padraig Lucey ruled out through injury while point guard Mihail Kapitanov picked up an injury on Saturday night and sat out Sunday’s encounter. Following Saturday night’s defeat, Scotts Lakers were on the road early on Sunday morning for a lunchtime tip-off against Paris Texas Kilkenny. Still feeling the effects from the night before, the Lakers struggled to find their range early on and the home side led 29-9 at the end of the first quarter. Scotts Lakers stepped it up in the second quarter but still trailed 44-35 at the interval break.

Celts To Host Castlebar In FAI Castlebar play a good brand of football but they’re particularly strong in central defence, writes Killarney Athletic’s Adam Moynihan

FAI Junior Cup 5th Round Killarney Celtic v Castlebar Celtic Sunday, December 3, at 2pm (Celtic Park) Killarney Celtic will be hoping to progress to the last 32 of this year’s FAI Junior Cup when they play Castlebar Celtic in Celtic Park on Sunday.

Celtic have beaten all comers so far this season both domestically and on the national stage Celtic striker Cathal O’Shea in action against Cork City. Pic: Konrad Paprocki

Eoghan Donnellan’s team exceeded all expectations last season by reaching the last four of this prestigious tournament and the club would no doubt relish another shot at the big guns when the competition really takes shape in the New Year. Celtic have beaten all comers so far this season both domestically and on the national stage. They have already made light work of Clare sides Rineanna Rovers (11-0), Moher Celtic (4-0) and Newmarket Celtic B (4-2) en route to the fifth round of the FAI and will fancy their chances of making the latter stages again this time out, although their opponents in Sunday’s fifth round clash will certainly be no pushovers. Castlebar have won the Mayo League 17 times

Rugby News ... Words: Liam Murphy IRELAND completed their Guinness Series of November Internationals with three wins from three last weekend with a win over Argentina at the Aviva winning on a scoreline of 28 points to 19. Argentina looked tired after their tour and the hosts held them scoreless in the first half, leading 13-0 at halftime. Tries were scored by Munster’s own CJ Stander and probable player of the series Ulster’s Jacob Stockdale who scored a brace. He has been a revelation, without a doubt. It has been good to see Joe Schmidt literally use everyone in his camp with many new caps earning their starting places. Munster’s Chris Farrell had another excellent game, which will give new Munster boss Johan Van Graan a lift as he settles

(most recently in 2011) and finished third behind Westport United and Ballina Town in 2017. (The Mayo league runs from March to October.) Conor O’Grady’s young team were unlucky to lose out to Ballina Town in the Mayo Super Cup Final but they got revenge a few weeks back when they beat Ballina 4-2 in the fourth round of the FAI. Their run to the last 64 has also included victories over Crossmalina and Manulla. Castlebar play a good brand of football but they’re particularly strong in central defence. Ger O’Boyle, who recently lined out for Connacht, and Ioseph O’Reilly will be hoping to keep things tight at the back while the likes of Colm Nevin and Jason Hunt attempt to make inroads further up the field. Celtic will also need to keep a close eye on striker Liam Flatley who scored a brace in the last round against Ballina.

Also on Sunday, and also at Celtic Park, there’s a bit of a local derby in Division 1A as third place Cedar Galaxy play host to bottom of the table Ballyhar Dynamos. Cedar have made a decent start to the season, winning two and drawing three of their six games so far. They’ll be hoping to keep the pressure on the sides who currently occupy the promotion places, Ballyheigue and QPR, with a win on Sunday. Ballyhar, meanwhile, find themselves rooted to the bottom of the table with three defeats and a draw from their four matches to date. Interestingly, their only point so far came against Cedar. The teams drew 3-3 when they met back in September. Kick-off in this one is at 11.30am. In the Premier A, Mastergeeha welcome Tralee Dynamos to Kilbrean Park at 2pm. Killarney Athletic have not been handed a fixture.

in at Thomond Park. Speaking of which, Munster travelled to Italy to take on Zebre in the Pro14 last weekend, winning on a scoreline of 19 points to 36 to the Irish Province and bagging a bonus point to boot. It was fantastic to hear the Fields of Athenry ring out in the stands, however the penalty count and two very silly sin bins will have the new head coach worried with a lot to work on. With tries coming from Scannell, Hart, Nash and a brace from Alex Wootton, JJ Hanrahan was again a class act converting four of the five tries as well as scoring a penalty.

With Ian Keatley producing the goods for Ireland and JJ stepping up for Munster, things a really looking promising at Munster. Add to this Tyler Bleyendaal and this is a good headache for the incumbent coach. Finally, it was great to hear that Ronan O’Gara has been offered a position as Backs Coach with New Zealand outfit and Super Rugby champions the Crusaders. It is extremely rare for any team in New Zealand to look outside of New Zealand for coaches given their utter dominance of the game, so this just goes to show the reverence with which ROG is held. Congrats ROG!

WRC Round-up

Bottas Wins In Abu Dhabi Words: Cormac Casey

Words: Cormac Casey THE 2017 WRC Championship saw the most dramatic change to regulations since the group B era and the season delivery the most exciting championship in years. All four registered manufacturers recording a win. Seven different drivers took the top step of the podium with M-Sport Ford and Sebastian Ogier ultimately taking home the championship spoils. Ford and Hyundai took full advantage of the new regulations taking first and second respectfully in the manufacturers while Toyota make an impressive return to the championship taking third. Citroen had the most difficult transition to the new

regulations remaining on the bottom of the table in fourth. Irish rally fans were focused on Kris Meeke, Paul Nagle and Craig Breen, all with the Citroen team. Meeke and Nagle ended the season seventh in the championship with an epic win in Mexico and a dominant win in Spain. However, the overall result is not reflective of their potential. On paper, pre-season the Citroen crew were serious contenders for the title. Unfortunately, they had to overcome an underperforming Citroen C3 all season. Five retirements from thirteen starts - both mechanical failures and driver errors – mostly brought about by driving a

car beyond what the car was capable of in search of a good result. The difficulty for the Meeke and Nagle’s championship was that they were in contention on four out of the five retirements. Craig Breen in his first full WRC season had consistent results build his experience and confidence for next season. Citroen admitted halfway through 2017 that all their focus was now on developing their 2018 car. Citroen are a big budget team and they know how to win. Meeke and Nagle in a performing car are championship contenders – Citroen need to deliver for 2018.

THE 2017 F1 season finished last weekend in Abu Dhabi with a win for Lewis Hamilton’s Mercedes teammate, Valtteri Bottas, Hamilton followed in second and Ferrari’s Sebastian Vettel in third. Bottas had a dominant weekend with quickest in practice then putting his Mercedes on pole and taking victory in the race. With nothing to gain in the championship for the following pack, Bottas had a clear path to victory. Hamilton had no answer to Bottas’ dominance all weekend and beat the world champion fair and square. F1 is a multi-billion euro industry known for not liking change and true to form the unveiling of the new F1 logo over the weekend sparked a debate up and down the pitlane with divided opinion. The new owners, Liberty Media who took control of F1 from the iron fist of Bernie Ecclestone, will have an interesting ride over the coming years to keep calm amongst the ranks of the current pitlane. The will be as interesting as the racing.

Dr Crokes No Match For Nemo Rangers In Munster Final Words: Eamonn Fitzgerald DR CROKES lost their Munster club title to a rampant Nemo Rangers side at Páirc UI Rinn on Sunday last. Nemo won by a mere five points but they could well have won by double that, had they not spurned six goal opportunities. No goal in the match which finished 16 points to 11. Nemo were the supreme masters and are fully deserving of this victory, their 16th Munster title. They will now go on to the All-Ireland series in February and they are worthy champions. The acrobatic brilliance of Shane Murphy and the superb blocking of John Payne denied Nemo those six clear-cut chances at goal scoring. Crokes had just one shot at goal near the end when they were without Kieran O’Leary who was sent off after picking up his second yellow card.

distance of the Cork men but they could not kick on.

OPENED SMARTLY Crokes opened smartly when Johnny Buckley kicked over the opening point. Gavin White scored another point and he had an outstanding game throughout at wingback, for the full hour, but the defence overall could not keep Nemo at bay by himself and Payne. Man of the match was Nemo’s Luke Connolly who finished the game with 10 points. This included four converted frees and two 45s. He was also very much on top in general play. Once he got going after the opening 10 minutes the Cork side were the complete masters despite some wonderful high fielding by Johnny Buckley, but Crokes lacked their normal rhythm and any effort at scoring was swallowed up by the in-form Nemo defence. Between the 12th and the 20th minute Nemo scored six points and Crokes failed to score. They did have three good chances of points but Nemo stood resolute. Nemo won most of the individual battles. Barry O’Driscoll was denied a goal bound shot by a superb Payno block. He repeated the heroics also when Alan O’Donovan sent a great ball in to Paddy Gumley; this effort was snuffed out by Payno. Brian Looney tried very hard in a forward division that failed to ignite.

CROKES CHANGES One felt that half-time could not come half quick enough for Crokes from the constant bombardment and the surprise is that Crokes were still within the sights of Nemo on the scoreboard. Once again they were grateful to their brilliant goalkeeper Shane Murphy. I expected changes in the Crokes team at halftime but that did not happen until the three quarter stage when Paul Clarke came on for Gavin O Shea. Tony Brosnan came on two minutes later for Micheál Burns. Crokes got within striking

Book Review

Eoin Hand Opens New Chapter TIRED While Nemo were eager and enthusiastic throughout the field and matched that with scores, Crokes laboured and had all the signs of a tired team. This team won six of the Kerry county championships in recent years and crowned it all by winning the All Ireland club title on St Patrick’s Day 2017. They have been on the go over that long and successful period and there was no letup for the past 18 months. Missing on Sunday last was the slick teamwork which was the trademark of this Croke team, but there comes a time when that will end and that is what happened on Sunday last. A vastly superior Nemo team proved much too good for Crokes. The surprise was that Nemo did not double their match winning fivepoint win. The pitch was very cut up and players found it very hard to keep their feet, but it was the same conditions for both sides and Crokes will not be putting that up as an excuse. They were overwhelmed by a vastly superior side. There was great intensity in the game with honest to goodness tackles for the most part. However it spilled over in the last ten minutes when the outcome was no longer in doubt.

SCORERS

Nemo Rangers: L Connolly (0-10, 4 frees, 2 45s); P. Gumley (0-3); A O’Reilly, P Kerrigan, C Horgan (0-1 each); Dr Crokes: C Cooper 0-3 frees), D Casey (1 free) (0-2 from play); B Looney (0-2); J. Buckley, G. White, J. Kiely (0-1 each).

EOIN HAND had an up and down career both as a soccer player and as a manager, but through it all he was the great survivor and he lays bare his professional life and his personal life in a new book published by The Collins Press. First Hand – My Life and Irish Football ghosted by Jared Browne. He had a very varied career playing with Swindon Town, Dundalk, Shelbourne, Drumcondra and Portsmouth. Eoin, who has been resident in Moyvane, Co Kerry, for some years now, was well liked in Limerick as he steered them to the League of Ireland as player manager. He won 20 caps playing for the Irish team and later managed the Irish team. In his very first match as manager of the Irish team in 1980 the Irish won. He took on a tough assignment in 1986 when he went to manage Saudi Arabia where the language was a big barrier, but he stuck it out for 18 months. In 1994 he went to South Africa but he was forced to leave after his life was threatened on one occasion by 30 Zulus who invaded the pitch. He had his own controversies with the FAI. A very interesting chapter deals with his personal life and the demons of drink and depression. When he was at death’s door he decided to plan his own funeral. He is very open about his severe bouts of depression and is quite frank in his description of how the depression and the heavy drinking brought him to the brink, but he survived. It is a riveting read.

Legion v Rathmore: Five things to watch out for

Despite all the controversy over the past couple of weeks, this year’s O’Donoghue Cup final promises to be a classic, writes Adam Moynihan

O’Donoghue Cup Final Killarney Legion v Rathmore Sunday, December 3, at 2pm (Fitzgerald Stadium) 1. Renewing old acquaintances This year’s O’Donoghue Cup decider pits Legion against Rathmore and if recent history is anything to go by, Sunday’s game should be a belter. This is the third time in four years the sides have met in the final and you can be sure that Legion will have vengeance on their mind; Rathmore came out on top in 2014 after a replay and again in 2015 when they won by seven points. Earlier that year, Legion beat their East Kerry rivals by 0-15 to 0-12 in the semi-final of the County Championship, ending Rathmore’s dreams of making their first ever County Final.

This is the third time in four years the sides have met in the final and you can be sure that Legion will have vengeance on their mind 2. Rathmore on the brink of history Following those two triumphs over Legion and last year’s superb victory over Crokes, Rathmore are one game away from winning their fourth O’Donoghue Cup in a row. It would be a remarkable achievement, especially considering how dominant the Crokes had been in the tournament since the turn of the century. This year, they’ve already accounted for Spa and Gneeveguilla en route to the final. If they lift the cup on Sunday, it will be the club’s eighth East Kerry Championship (third all-time behind Spa and Crokes).

3. Can Legion lay their final hoodoo to rest? Legion have unquestionably been one of the best teams in East Kerry for the past number of years but that coveted piece of silverware continues to elude them. In the last five years they’ve lost three O’Donoghue Cup finals, two Club Championship finals and a County Championship final. The circumstances surrounding their qualification for this particular decider are far from ideal but it is what it is. The players can only beat what’s put in front of them.

Rathmore’s James O’Sullivan tussles with Legion’s Billy McGuire when the sides met in the 2015 County Championship. Pic: Eamonn Keogh

Alan O’Neill has already guided his side back into Division 1; defeating Rathmore and stopping their four-in-a-row would constitute another major success. Everyone involved will be desperate to bring the O’Donoghue Cup back to Derreen for the first time since 1976.

4. Lucey back from Oz, Murphy still there Following a stint in the AFL with Geelong, Pádraig Lucey has made a welcome return to the Legion set-up and could well feature in Sunday’s crucial fixture. Standing at 6’8” tall, Lucey, who has also lined out for the Scotts Lakers since coming home, certainly offers Legion something different and the prospect of James O’Donoghue and Conor Keane feeding off of him in the full forward line should certainly excite the Legion faithful. Rathmore, meanwhile, will have to make do without Kerry star Paul Murphy who is currently in Australia. Murphy will undoubtedly be a loss but Rathmore are strong all over the pitch and will be hoping that

others can pick up the slack.

5. The end of the O’Donoghue Cup as we know it? Given how poorly this year’s tournament has gone, everyone seems to agree that something has to be done about the East Kerry Championship. Players have complained for a very long time about having to play into December and 10 of the 13 clubs (i.e. those who haven’t made a final in the last 11 years) are finding it hard stay optimistic about their chances of winning it again, in the near future at least. Now we’ve reached the stage – and I know there are mitigating circumstances - where teams are actually refusing to field teams. The O’Donoghue Cup has been around for 63 years so any changes are sure to be resisted in some quarters but 2017 will surely be the straw that broke the camel’s back. I don’t think there’s any easy solution to the problem but the East Kerry Board may feel as though it’s time to try something new.

be a Fundraiser for the “Ian O’Connell” benevolent fund, the competition is expected to draw a very large entry field, and in an effort to accommodate such a large entry, the Men’s Committee, have decided to have two shotgun starts, the first at 8.30 A.M. and the second at 12.30 P.M. the competition will be played on our Killeen Course. Ian O’Connell is a 16-year-old youth from Park Road Killarney, who plays football with Spa, G.A.A. and he plays hurling with Dr. Crokes, he also plays Rugby with the Killarney side, and soccer with Killarney Celtic, so he is an all-rounder in very many sports. On The Ball | Monday 5.30pm Dr Crokes Club MUNSTER CLUB CHAMPIONSHIP FINAL: Played in Pair Ui Rinn. Nemo Rangers 0-16 Dr Crokes 0-11. In a game in which we led twice in the first five minutes, we had to play second fiddle to our opponents over the hour. We were still ahead by a point after ten minutes but the next ten minutes of the game proved to be the defining minutes. In this period, Nemo sent over six points without reply and went into a five point lead. We had two points in the next five minutes to reduce the lead but a point just before half time by the Cork boys gave them an 0-9 to 0-5 lead at the interval. When Nemo added two points just after half time it put us very much on the back foot. We rallied strongly after that and four points without reply left us just two points in arrears going into the last quarter. Nemo however rallied again and three unanswered points in the first five minutes of this period put them five points clear. We tried hard to the end but both sides added on two points to give the Cork boys a 0-16 to 0-11 victory. Our Congratulations to Nemo Rangers on their victory. Fossa GAA FR. GALVIN CUP: Fossa played Listry in the Fr Galvin Cup final in the Fitzgerald stadium this afternoon. Played in tough, cold, wet conditions both teams served up a great game of football. Fossa started very well and led by 3 points after five minutes thanks to three quick scores from David Clifford and a free from Tadgh O’Shea.. Listry were battling hard but Fossa were in control in all areas of the pitch, they added further scores through Paudie Clifford and a peach of a point from Tadgh O’Shea from out in the wing. In spite of having a lot of possession and having the aid of the wind the scores were hard to come by, however, cometh the hour cometh the man, up steps David Clifford to bury a fantastic goal in the 29th minute to put some daylight between the sides. Listry did score a penalty in injury time to leave the score at half time, Fossa 1-07, Listry 1-04. The second half was similar to the first, Listry took the game to Fossa but Tadgh O’Shea kept the scoreboard ticking over with two frees. Then in the space of five minutes David Clifford scored three points to give his side some breathing space and in the 27th minute the same man scored an absolutely brilliant goal after great build up play from out the field. David Osterloh completed the scoring with a fine point to leave Fossa comprehensive winners on a score of 2-13 to 1-09.
