Editor’s View

05.01.18 Eve Kelliher takes a look at the news that’s been getting Killarney and Kerry talking

Glenflesk Duo Ring In New Year On Top Of The World A REAL NEW YEAR’S inspiration story saw two pals literally on top of the world as they got set to ring in the New Year. Niall Dennehy and Pat Sheehan reached the summit of Mount Kilimanjaro early on, New Year’s Eve, a day ahead of their schedule. And as they scaled Africa’s highest mountain, the dynamic duo showed what a difference a year can make. In October 2016, Niall was just about able to walk one lap around Barraduff Community Field. Turning his life around, Niall has shed 10 stone in weight and boosted his wellbeing and fitness over the past 12 months. He has accomplished all of this with the help of his friend and fellow Glenflesk native Pat Sheehan, a health and fitness instructor. Niall, a farmer, began his exercise regime by walking around the local community field but as his fitness rapidly improved he set more and more goals. “Farming had taken over my life but gradually I started to learn to prioritise my health and fitness,” said Niall. Pat, who runs Pat Sheehan Health and Fitness wellness

centre at Club Vitae Leisure Centre, Hotel Killarney, and another weightloss centre in The Loft Fitness Studio in Millstreet, was well placed to give Niall advice. On St Stephen’s Day when many will have been relaxing by the fire, Niall and Pat arrived in Moshi town in Tanzania ahead of commencing their strenuous five-day trek. And together with their guide Fredy Tarimo in an expedition organised by Venture 2 Adventures, on Sunday morning, they scaled the summit of a peak that is six times higher than Niall and Pat’s “training slope”, Carrantuohill. “We made our way onto Uhuru Peak, 5895m, the Roof of Africa, at 10.30am,” said Niall. “I placed a stone from my farm which was inscribed with the names of my nephews and nieces on the summit.” Niall and Pat are raising money for the Kerry branch of the Irish Kidney Association through the climb and paid for the trip themselves. In addition, money raised from an annual pool tournament in memory of Niall’s brother, Denis, will also be donated to the cause.

Drama Group Supports Kerry Hospice WHEN Liz Ryan introduced the members of Dóchas Drama Group to Gillian Plowman’s acclaimed play “Philip and Rowena” the reaction was mixed. Some felt it was very sad while others felt it was full of optimism. Some were forced to look at the realities of hospice care for the first time while others were well aware of what is involved having had personal experience of the daily routine of the hospice. “The main characters are both terminally ill but together they managed to fulfil their dreams and fantasies and live life until it was over,” said Liz. “Dóchas Drama did not set out to do a play to raise funds for Kerry Hospice Foundation but, as the rehearsals progressed the members recognized that the nature of this play forms a tribute to hospice care,” added Liz. During this period the new hospice unit,

which provides 15 beds for people in need of palliative care, opened in Tralee. “Then it became clear that we should stage this play to raise awareness and pay tribute to those who provide palliative care and to the many volunteers who help raise funds to ensure the service can continue,” said Liz. “Through the generosity of Killarney Avenue Hotel who provided the venue and the audiences who attended and who so generously supported the raffle we are delighted to offer the proceeds (€3,000) to Kerry Hospice Foundation.” Pat Doolan, chairman, Killarney branch, Kerry Hospice Foundation, said. “The money will be used to fund the services we provide at the new inpatient unit and existing Suaimhneas palliative daycare unit and also the homecare nursing unit.” Well Mary Murphy, Pat Doolan, Liz Sherry, Patricia McSherry and Don Rohan. done to all involved. Wrath Of Storm Eleanor THE first storm of 2018, Storm Eleanor hit Ireland on Tuesday. Kerry County Council urged all road users to take care in recent days as gusts of up to 130 kilometres battered the county. Trees were down across Kerry with severe flooding reported in Tralee. Meanwhile, business owners in Galway

were counting the cost of devastating flooding following Storm Eleanor. Much of the country remained under a Status Yellow weather warning until 1pm yesterday as the danger of coastal flooding loomed. The chair of National Emergency Co-ordination Centre Sean Hogan said there is “unfortunately still

some threat coming towards us”. Mr Hogan said parts of Galway city that are not normally susceptible to floods were hit. He said adequate warnings were issued to local authorities but there are always “limitations” because storms can change direction at any moment. “What was a surprise was the extent of

what happened in Galway and the speed at which it happened,” he said. He urged people along the south and west coast to stay away from coastlines until the windy weather passes today, Friday. Met Éireann’s Evelyn Cusack said two smaller weather events would take place in the southwest in the coming days.

Putting Their Best Foot Forward

DESPITE the icy elements, dozens of charity champions turned out for the annual fundraising Christmas Charity walk in Fossa on Thursday, December 28. Two very deserving local causes will benefit from the annual walk – now in its fifth year – organised by the Killarney Valley Classic and Vintage Club. The Innisfallen Hotel, Fossa, was the starting point and the walk route brought participants along the Fossa Way to Knockreer with a 5k or a 10k option from which to choose. After the walk, participants were afforded an opportunity to defrost with refreshments including hot chocolate, tea/ coffee and finger food with a rousing trad session, featuring the Killarney School of Music, in the Innisfallen Hotel. The main charity to benefit this year from the walk will again be the Kerry-Cork Health Link Bus while proceeds from a post-walk raffle will go to the Ian O’Connell Fund, set up to help Killarney teenager Ian O’Connell who was seriously injured in a fall from his bicycle last August. Tom Leslie, KVC&V Club Chairman, thanked everyone who came out and took part in and supported the walk. Anyone wishing to join the Killarney Valley Classic & Vintage Club or would like to renew their membership for 2018, can do so by calling to Killarney Glass, Woodlands Industrial Estate for a membership form or call 0873381842.

Busy Times For New Year Dad County Welcomes Hannah As First Baby Of 2018 Words: Eve Kelliher A BIG welcome to the first baby to be born in the county this year. Hannah Moore from Killarney entered the world at 8.19am on New Year’s Day at University Hospital Kerry. The baby girl, who weighed 5.14 pounds, is the second child of Joanie and Declan Moore and is a little sister to Logan and Shannon. It was a very busy time for the entire family, as Declan was best man at his brother Billy Moore’s wedding on New Year’s Eve and was on hand to lend his support as Billy and his bride Triona Raymond,

Tralee, exchanged vows and later celebrated at a reception at the Killarney Oaks Hotel. “Declan’s wife Joanie went into labour early on New Year’s Eve (the morning of the wedding) so he had to be in two places at once!” Billy told Killarney Advertiser. “Declan managed to be in Tralee that morning and also managed to make it out for wedding photos. He then went back to the hospital after the meal and speeches and came back to the wedding for the final time to finish the night, so he had a busy day to say the least!”

Mountain Rescues

Action Stations For Rescue Team On Carrantuohill

Should There Be A Charge For Rescues? FOLLOWING an extremely busy time for Kerry Mountain Rescue Team in December, many have questioned whether or not there should be a fixed charge issued those rescued. The Mayor of Kerry, Councillor John Sheahan, has called for

a minimum financial charge from all those rescued. “These are risk takers and if they require services they should have to pay for them,” said Cllr Sheahan, Fine Gael. The team receives just a quarter of its €80,000 annual costs from the State.

Starting With A Clean Sweep KERRY MOUNTAIN RESCUE TEAM plucked seven people to safety in the festive season, bringing to 44 the number of people it assisted in 2017. Volunteers engaged in five emergency callouts to a snow-covered Carrantuohill between St Stephen’s Day and Friday, December 29. Three climbers had to be rescued from near the top of Carrantuohill last Thursday after one climber fell. The three night climbers included a Polish man and woman and an Irish woman. The volunteers reached them at 3am and a waiting ambulance took the injured man to University Hospital Kerry at 7am. Meanwhile, a German national was airlifted to University Hospital Kerry on December 27 after Kerry Mountain Rescue Team located him in a search carried out in co-ordination with Valentia Coast

Guard. The climber reported that he was lost in an unknown location in the MacGillycuddy Reeks at 8.20pm on December 26. The Rescue 115 helicopter attended the scene and conducted a search but was stood down due to poor visibility. The man, who had lost mobile phone coverage, was located on the morning of December 27. The PRO for Kerry Mountain Rescue Team, Alan Wallace, said the man began walking on Christmas Day, camped that night and continued walking on St Stephen’s Day. Three climbers were rescued from two separate locations on December 26. A man got into difficulty at the summit of Carrantuohill and two people were rescued after becoming stuck between the summit and the Devil’s Ladder.

MEMBERS of Killarney Tidy Towns started the New Year with a real clean sweep as they swung into action on Main Street on January 1. They were joined by none other than Fr Tidy Towns himself, Archdeacon Michael Murphy. Fr Murphy has been key to Kerry’s successful Tidy Towns wins over the decades, ensuring Sneem and Kenmare as well as Killarney won gold

medals in the national awards. “We are all ready to celebrate the 60th anniversary of the National Tidy Towns Competition, which was first held in 1958 to honour the tidiest towns and villages in Ireland,” said Johnny McGuire of Killarney Tidy Towns. Fr Murphy took to the airwaves on Tuesday for a Radio Kerry interview highlighting the benefits of the Tidy Towns movement.

Petition

‘Homelessness Is Not Caused By Asylum Seekers Or Immigrants,’ Say Barraduff Sisters

News Briefs ...

Valentia Records Ireland’s Wettest December SOME 28 wet days were recorded during December at Valentia Observatory. Met Éireann noted almost 199 millimetres of rain fell at the south Kerry weather station in the last month of 2017. This was the highest level of rainfall recorded at any weather station in the country.

Scartaglin Rambling House THE Heritage Centre in Scartaglin will host a rambling house this Monday, January 8, at 8.30pm. Admission is free and there will be a raffle. Refreshments will be served and all are welcome.

Ava and Martina O’Donoghue with their petition.

FIVE sisters have set up a petition as a reaction to the recent protest at Linden House in Killarney. The protest, which took place in December as the first of 55 male asylum seekers moved into the former guesthouse on New Road, saw picketers call for solutions to the homelessness crisis. Concerns were also raised about an absence of consultation between the Department of Justice and the community on the decision as to the use of Linden House. Augustine, Mala, Martina, Julianna and Ava O’Donoghue, originally from Barraduff, said they found the image of the protest “very disturbing” and felt it targeted

“a vulnerable group living in Killarney”. “Asylum seekers, like those in Killarney, have fled war, persecution and torture. The idea that they are in some way privileged or favoured over the so-called ‘native’ Irish is completely false,” they stated. They added: “Homelessness is not caused by or exacerbated by asylum seekers or immigrants.” Focusing on one house in Killarney where asylum seekers are seeking refuge “is outrageous and complete flawed”, added the sisters. “The solution to the housing crisis is to build more social housing and utilise the existing 180,000 homes that currently lie empty,” said Mala. The sisters set up the petition at Change.

org. At the December protest, Independent councillor Donal Grady addressed the gathering, before handing in a petition stating the concerns of the protesters, outlining the lack of consultation with the community. “Firstly, to make clear we believe that people from war-torn areas like Iraq and Syria should be accepted in our country,” said Cllr Grady who went on to highlight the concerns about the lack of consultation. Days ahead of the confirmation that Linden House would be used as an accommodation centre for asylum seekers, Kerry County Council member Donal Grady had called for the property to open its doors to homeless people.

‘Killarney & East Kerry Need A TD’ Says Mayor

THE Mayor of Killarney Councillor Niall Kelleher has confirmed he is considering running for the Dáil but stressed that it is not his intention to challenge sitting TD John Brassil if Fianna Fáil decides to select only one candidate. Fianna Fáil members in Kerry have been aware for some time that the selection convention for the General Election was imminent, noted Cllr Kelleher. “Members, supporters and others from my own area and throughout Kerry have been in touch asking me to consider joining John Brassil TD on the Fianna Fáil ticket for the next General Election in Kerry as they believe, as do I, that Killarney and East Kerry needs a TD,” he told Killarney Advertiser. “It is something that I have been considering along with family, friends and supporters. I would be honoured to receive nominations to contest the convention and I plan on making a final decision once we receive the instructions from Fianna Fáil headquarters in relation to the proposed candidate strategy. It is not my intention to challenge our sitting TD John Brassil if there is to be only one candidate selected at convention.” Meanwhile, Kenmare-based senator Mark Daly has said he would be seeking the Fianna Fáil ticket for the next General Election, saying he hoped to be “a voice for the people of Kerry” in Dáil Éireann.

Tribute

‘If Anyone Deserved The Accolade Of Club President, It Was John’ TRIBUTES flowed following the pdeath of Dr Crokes GAA Club President John Moynihan, who passed away on St Stephen’s Day 2017. Dr Crokes chairperson Denis Coleman described John’s 70-year contribution to the club as “immense”. “If ever anyone deserved the accolade of club president, it was John,” said Denis. John, late of York Terrace, became secretary of Dr Crokes shortly after he joined the Killarney Mineral Water Company in 1939. The manager of the company at the time was that great Dr Crokes clubman Eugene O’Sullivan, who along with Johnny O’Halloran, Dr Crokes, recognised his ability and persuaded John to become secretary of the club. As John once recalled: “My father asked Eugene for a job for his son and Eugene said I will give him two jobs – one here in the mineral water company and another as secretary of the Crokes.” Employment was at a premium in the 1940s and 1950s and many players had to emigrate. John, who was secretary at the time (and later treasurer), was to the fore in keeping the club alive. “On the day of a game, the club secretary had to get enough players, supply a football, boots, togs and stockings for those in need,” said Denis. “That was some task in those hard times

but John was the supreme provider. His connections with St Brendan’s College were important as they often helped out in the ‘kit department’. Boots were a particular challenge as very few players had them and this required a huge effort from John to get these, more often than not from the trainee priests down in ‘The Sem’.” Back in those days, transport to games was mostly by bicycle. “There are numerous instances of ‘heroic exploits’ on the bike such as the one of John, Donal MacMonagle (RIP) and Donie Corkery (RIP) riding to Barraduff for a match on a single machine – bar, saddle and carrier fully utilised and each taking a turn on the pedals!” added Denis. John’s total commitment was rewarded in 1944 when the club won the Junior East Kerry League and celebrated with the first all-male club social held in Scott’s Hotel on November 29. “Club historians often point to these events in 1944 as the turning point for the club as prior to this, hard as it may be to believe, the Dr Crokes club was very close to going out of existence,” said Denis. John also had strong connections with the Fitzgerald Stadium Project and even though he “emigrated” to Tralee in the 1950s to work with Fitzgeralds Bros, he remained a loyal Dr Crokes man. “In the last number of

John Moynihan (1921-2017), President of Dr Crokes GAA.

years, he regularly came to Killarney for vital county championship games. However, during these games, John was more likely to be found in a local cemetery praying that we might get a right result,” said Denis. “Clearly, with

his beloved Dr Crokes winning seven county championship titles in this century, John’s prayers were very often answered.” Dr Crokes formed a guard of honour at the Requiem Mass last Friday at St John’s Church, Tralee.

Finally, the application fee of £25 is paid and the completed application form is sent online to UCAS.

What to consider before applying to the UK • Ease of travel to college: Are direct flights available from airports that are relatively close to you? • Close connections: Are there colleges close to where you have relatives or areas that you are familiar with? • Entry requirements and assessments: These differ in all colleges so you will need to check specifically what subjects are needed, are there specific grades required in particular subjects and what the overall tariff points required are. Also check dates of possible extra assessments

Fees in the UK vary. For specific information check the fees section on the university/college websites. Detailed information about the content of courses can be found on the university/college websites. Seeking Inspiration For A Year To Remember? IT’S the question on everyone’s lips each January – what’s your New Year’s resolution? We got the inside track on some of the aspirational promises people have been making to themselves in Killarney and beyond this week. “My New Year’s resolution is to keep writing and recording my own music and to have an EP out by May and an album out by December!” Killarney singer-songwriter Cathal Flaherty

“I don’t know about a resolution but I definitely aim to learn a new instrument, or just try to relearn the piano!” Killarney singer-songwriter Tom Lucey

“I don’t really go in for New Year’s resolutions as such but I do want to get up earlier in the morning in 2018. So much can be accomplished early in the day without distraction, so that’s the plan anyway! Ask me how it’s going in a few months (but not before 9am). Happy New Year to all!” Killarney Chamber of Tourism & Commerce President Paul O’Neill

“My resolution would be to lose a few pounds after the body-shaming by the Three O’s in the Christmas Carpool Killarney-oke (only joking, lads, but I am going to try and be a bit healthier this year)!” Killarney Advertiser Assistant General Manager Kieran Healy

“As a Toastmaster, I would like to try to keep pushing my boundaries. I started out a few years ago being uncomfortable talking to just one person. I have gotten over that, and now groups are okay too. What I would really like to learn is becoming a better impromptu speaker, and, most importantly, help others overcome their nerves and trepidation!” Debby Looney, Killarney, Area Director, Toastmasters Ireland “I would like to increase my fitness in 2018.” Johnny McGuire, Killarney Tidy Towns and Bricin “To focus on myself and work hard to do a good Leaving Cert in June.” Aoibhe O’Connor, singer/actress, Killarney “I would like to get fit both in body and mind, get more involved in charity work helping others, and increase positivity levels. And I always set myself a goal – last year I went to India and this year I would like to visit the Grand Canyon.” PJ O’Sullivan, Aunty Nellie’s Sweet Shop, Killarney “Boosting fitness levels, trying a new outdoor activity each season and staying in touch with friends (you have been warned!) would all do the trick for me as a first-time resolution maker.” Killarney Advertiser Editor Eve Kelliher “I would like to disengage from my mobile phone; ideally I want to stop looking at the phone and look up instead! I find we can miss so much by concentrating on our phones even when walking down the street.” Christmas in Killarney Chairperson Kate O’Leary

“My New Year’s resolution is to stay fit and healthy!” Jill Duggan, Killarney Toning & Beauty Studio “My resolution is not to drink Seven-Up for the whole year!” Niall ‘Botty’ O’Callaghan, Kerry GAA Store “My resolution is to support actively art and literature in our area and artists, writers and poets including those whose mother tongue is not English.” Killarney Rotary Club President Eduard Schmidt-Zorner “My New Year’s Resolution is very simple – to pound the track in Glenflesk GAA pitch as often as possible in an effort to get fit! Glenflesk GAA Chairman Derry Healy “I really want to explore the small and simple ways to focus on my well-being both physically and mentally in my daily life to ensure I have enough time and energy for all the things I want to achieve in 2018.” Laura MacSweeny, brand consultant “My resolution would be to stay healthy, enjoy life and to contribute positively to anything I do. A bit of Legion silverware is always welcome too!!!!” Killarney Legion Chairman Enda Walshe “I am hoping to up my fitness regime, join a gym and get the bike out! We are so lucky here in Killarney, we can cycle off the roads and in the National Park and things will hopefully get even better once cycle-lane infrastructure is improved and when greenways eventually come onstream.” Mayor of Kerry John Sheahan

ROAD TRAFFIC ACCIDENTS With Christmas now behind us and we are back to the old routine and the level of road usership back up to what it was before Christmas, together with the winter weather conditions, road traffic accidents at this time of year can see an increase. As all prudent road users will be aware, inclement driving conditions brought on by excess rain, snow, ice or wind, there is an obligation on all road users to drive appropriately to the conditions specifically in respect of speed, lights, indication and leaving appropriate distances to other road users taking account of reduced stopping times or sudden emergencies. In the event however you are involved in a road traffic accident it is always prudent to immediately notify the Gardai who can where necessary secure the scene and ensure the collision does not cause a hazard to other road users. Where the accident is serious the vehicles should not be moved until the gardai arrive. You should exchange your details to include the driver and owner of the vehicle, insurance details, names, addresses and telephone numbers and vehicle details including vehicle make, model and registration and establish if there is any injury. Obviously, if there are injuries, emergency services should be contacted immediately. If there is likely to give rise to a dispute as to who is liable for the accident, it is always wise to obtain the assistance of any witness and obtain their names, addresses and contact telephone numbers immediately and where possible with the proliferation of smart phones, it is always wise to take photographs of the accident scene and damage caused to all vehicles involved which may be of significant benefit at a later point in time. It is wise to ensure that the vehicle are not moved until the gardai are contacted. Irrespective if you are or not liable for

Need to lose weight and keep it off?

the accident, it is incumbent upon you, through your insurance policy to notify your insurance company of the accident immediately. They will require details of the parties involved, vehicle and insurance details and injuries if any. Where the Gardai attend the scene, they will usually take relevant details of the parties involved and take note of the level of damage and whether or not there are injuries. Depending on the circumstances of the accident there may be prosecutions or charges brought but this is a separate matter dealt with directly by the Gardai. It should be noted that in the event that a road traffic accident occurs where one or the other party does not remain at the scene, which one is obliged to do, and you cannot obtain their details and you have sustained damage or loss or injury, you may still be in a position to make a claim to the Motor Insurers Bureau of Ireland notwithstanding the fact that you do not have or have not obtained the details of the third party offending vehicle/driver. In this instance most especially, the incident must be reported to the Gardai immediately who must fully investigate the matter. In respect of any claims being contemplated arising from road traffic accidents you should act quickly and notify your solicitor immediately for assistance as only a limited time to bring any such claims exist. Finally, we would wish our readers all the very best, health and happiness for 2018 and safe driving! The above is a discussion piece only and is not and does not purport to be legal advice and should not be relied upon as such. In respect of any specific circumstances, you should consult your solicitor to obtain specific legal advice and Terence F. Time For Change

A Year Of Possibilities AS WE enter the New Year I think that “time” can consume a lot of our thoughts. We feel that the New Year allows us to start afresh and we sense that time is on our side again. An entire 12 months of endless possibilities stretch out before us. January takes no prisoners and allows very few excuses. Louis Armstrong said, “We have all the time in the world”, and for those of us in the arts world I think this is true. As time moves forward I am beginning to see that we can also travel backwards if we use our musical time machine. This Christmas I watched a documentary about Vera Lynn who turned 100 years old. In the documentary they filmed a number of people listening to Vera’s biggest hits. These people could remember the time that her records were first released. They were

A Weekly Round-Up Of News + Views From Kerry And Around Opinion

Let’s Step Up Our Quest For More Parking The festive season reinforced motorists’ belief that the town needs more parking – and soon, says Killarney Advertiser Editor Eve Kelliher LAST July we started campaigning in earnest in these pages for more parking. That was the height of the tourism season but that past fortnight the lack of spaces for vehicles as Christmas shoppers descended on town became a frustrating talking point. It is wonderful to see the town enjoying a whole separate tourism season on the strength of Killarney’s success as a festive destination thanks to the gungho sprit of all involved in Christmas in Killarney. So can a solution to the parking crux be found to enhance the experience for locals and visitors alike? In the past two days alone, two local motorists told me of how they gave up on circling the town and simply turned around drove home again. Surely businesses are losing out? One driver told me how he had intended on buying items in town but because he wasn’t able to park, he drove the

several miles back home and made his purchases online instead. “It is infuriating and frustrating,” he said. “This is a problem. If this was my experience, then how many more have the same story?” So are we sending people out of town and off our high street – people who would otherwise shop local? Surely we’re greatly reducing businesses’ commercial revenue potential by not addressing this problem. Another motorist told me how she drove around town several times one day over the festive season and was forced to return home again without leaving her car. Killarney Advertiser has highlighted how a multi-storey car park, for instance in the Glebe car park or Lewis Road, could boost the town’s infrastructure and revenue. What do you think? Let us know at newsdesk@killarneyadvertiser.ie

Tailback Tales AS GRIDLOCK gripped the town over the festive season, problems with infrastructure also raised their head. Several times over Christmas, tailbacks going into Deerpark Retail Park were caused by the design of the nearby roundabout and its proximity to the pedestrian crossing. As one motorist who contacted Killarney Advertiser said: “Pedestrians crossing can press the button at will and so bring a huge volume of traf-

Trump Corner Trump Boasts That His Nuclear Button Is ‘Bigger’ Than Kim Jong-Un’s US PRESIDENT Donald Trump has boasted that he has a bigger and more powerful “nuclear button” than North Korean leader Kim Jong-un. His tweet came in response to Mr Kim’s New Year address in which he repeated fiery nuclear threats against the US. Mr Kim said he has a “nuclear button” on his office desk and warned that “the whole territory of the US is within the range of our nuclear strike”. Mr Trump replied: “Will someone from his depleted and food starved regime please inform him

Never fails to entertain

that I too have a Nuclear Button, but it is a much bigger & more powerful one than his, and my Button works!” However, the US President does not have a nuclear button. The process for launching a nuclear strike is secret and complex and involves the use of a nuclear “football”, which is carried by a rotating group of military officers everywhere the president goes and is equipped with communication tools and a book with prepared war plans. If the president were to order a strike, he would identify himself to military officials at the Pentagon with codes unique to him.

fic to a standstill. Why can’t we have a time delay at these crossings? Why are pedestrians prioritised here ahead of motorists?” This situation is of course similar to that at the Park Road roundabout, where when existing onto the Killarney Bypass, motorists often have to brake hard at the pedestrian crossing, which is located too close for comfort to the roundabout. Surely there should be a solution to suit pedestrians and motorists alike.

Help This Little Piggy Find His Way Home IRISH RAIL this week appealed to the owner of a stuffed pig to get in touch. It tweeted that George – Peppa Pig’s brother – is at Heuston Station with no ticket to get home. “George is at Heuston and has no ticket to get home! If he is yours let us know and we will get him to you,” tweeted Irish Rail. George is a character from the popular children’s television

and book series Peppa Pig. Jane Cregan of Irish Rail said: “I am not sure which service he came from but he is very new looking so maybe Santa brought him or maybe he was another Christmas gift. If he is yours or if you have a small person who might be very upset that they are missing George, he is at Heuston. You can get in touch with Irish Rail on Twitter or call 1850 366 222.”

Australian Flu Outbreak

EXPERTS are warning that the Australian flu is spreading rapidly. But what should we do to avoid it? The first cases of people dying as a result of Aussie flu have been confirmed in Ireland, where up to 10 people are said to have died. A further 73 people have also been admitted to hospital in Ireland with the flu. Irish UFC star Connor McGregor became the most high-profile victim of the outbreak when he shared a post on Instagram about spend-

ing the New Year in bed. The H3N2 strain – which has been linked to hundreds of deaths in Australia – has now also been confirmed in Wales. “At risk” groups – predominantly those over 65 – were advised to get vaccinated urgently. The strain has also reached England with Public Health England’s latest flu report, for the week up to Christmas Eve, revealing nine people have been admitted to intensive care or a high dependency unit with H3N2.

Motive Not Clear In Knife Attack

Lotto Winner’s Stamp of Approval THIS week a Kerry man is over half a million-euro better off having collected his Lotto prize at National Lottery Headquarters. The man, said to be married with children and living in the county, won €550,000 by matching five numbers plus the bonus in the Lotto Jackpot draw of Wednesday, December 20. The lucky winner, who wishes to remain anonymous, revealed he will mark his win by getting a tattoo and a piercing! He said: “I’m going to look after my wife and kids but I’ve always wanted to get a tattoo and a

body piercing but never got around to making a decision. I’m thinking if I don’t do this now, when I’ve won this lovely amount of money, I never will so that’s what I’m going to get done now! Apart from this the rest of the money will be spent wisely!” Aged between 38 and 45, the man is an online Lotto player and his win of €550,000 is the biggest match five plus bonus pay-out to date. It is not his first stroke of luck this year, he already won €1,500 by matching five numbers in the Lotto last June.

JUSTICE MINISTER Charlie Flanagan extended his sympathies those killed or injured in a series of attacks in Dundalk which left one man dead and two others injured. Minister Flanagan said: “Our thoughts are with his family and friends at this difficult time. I want to wish those who were injured a speedy recovery.” He praised the work of gardaí involved in the incident and cautioned about people jumping to conclusions over the attacks. “There has, understandably, been speculation and concern about the motivation

for this attack ... and would caution against drawing judgments until the gardaí can establish the facts in the course of their investigation,” he said. Gerry Adams, Sinn Fein president who represents Co Louth where the attacks took place, said: “I want to express my deep sense of shock at the brutal murder of Yosuke Sasaki in Dundalk and the wounding of two other citizens.” As detectives continued to question a teenage suspect over the random killing and assaults in Dundalk, Co Louth, on Wednesday morning they said no terrorist link has been established.

Don’t Insult Our Intelligence HOW many of you are fed up with the steady stream of weather warnings that have rained down on us in recent times? It seems as if not a day went by last week without a vibrantly colour-coded weather alert –and in some cases, some of the wilder predictions do not come true!

Weather Warnings

Weather warnings stop many of us from carrying out plans or making journeys. So….here’s an idea – why not just deliver the heather and don’t insult our intelligence by telling us what to do? Unless of course, it’s a genuine emergency such as the likes of Hurricane Ophelia….

DUP Leader To Share Brexit Views With Audience In Killarney

Driving Through Storm Like A ‘Walk In The Park’

A SOCIAL worker who drove to safety as waves broke around her during Storm Eleanor said God would protect her. Social media footage showed Selina Callaghan driving along the surging waterline, but she said she was seeking safety and a car park exit. The 28-year-old Donegal woman had been celebrating the

New Year with friends in Galway ad watched the growing swell from the promenade in Salthill on Tuesday night. She said she was “cool, calm and collected” and compared the experience with a walk in the park. There was extensive flooding around Galway city centre after high tides caused extensive flooding.

DUP LEADER Arlene Foster and influential Scottish Government Minister Michael Russell will be part of a high-powered gathering of politicians and business leaders at a major conference in Killarney focusing on the impact of Brexit on Ireland, the UK and the European Union. The Killarney Economic Conference will take place on January 12 and 13 in The Brehon and, in its inaugural year, it will concentrate on Brexit, the challenges it poses for business, the legal issues that will arise, how it will shape future politics and the impact it will have on daily life. Fianna Fail leader Micheál Martin and Matthew O’Toole, the former chief press officer at Number 10 Downing Street, had already been confirmed as keynote speakers at the conference, which will take place in The Brehon, in partnership with Killarney Convention Centre. Ms Foster, renowned for her forthright views, and Mr Russell, who is spearheading the UK negotiations on Scotland’s place in Europe, are high-profile additions to the

event which will see intense dialogue involving economic, civic and political leaders from Britain and Ireland. One of the conference organisers, Simon Kingston, said Brexit will have an influence on virtually every aspect of relations between Britain and Ireland and it makes the choice of topics and the timing of the Killarney Economic Conference particularly apt. “We are delighted that such a broad cross-section of political leadership and opinion is represented by our speakers. To have the leaders of the DUP and Fianna Fail present, alongside senior colleagues from other parties on both islands, is a great privilege. “We are looking forward to hearing their different perspectives, as well as their reiteration of a shared interest in the prosperity of both the UK and Ireland,” he said. Another of the conference organisers, William Sheehan, said: “Arlene Foster, as we have seen, will be a key player in the Brexit process, and we are delighted to have her speak in Killarney and share her ideas on the future of the island,” he added.

Moments in Time

Questions on Estates AT THE recent Killarney Municipal District meeting of Kerry County Council, I asked if any progress had been made in relation to the taking in charge of Oakfield, Park Road, Killarney, and if there had been any progress made in relation to the possible taking in charge of Ross Dara, Killarney. Kerry County Council replied that with regards to Oakfield, the developer has substantially completed the outstanding overground works on this estate. Below-ground works, including sewers and water mains, are being reviewed by the water services department. An itemised list of all outstanding works will issue to the developer for completion. Once completed and

signed off, the council can then commence the statutory taking in charge process which will include submitting the estate for approval to Irish Water. In relation to Ross Dara, in accordance with Kerry County Council’s memorandum of understanding with Irish Water, the required documentation for taking this estate in charge has been submitted to them for approval. Once approval to proceed issues, the council will then be in a position to commence the statutory taking in charge process. As previously pointed out, this is a historic Estate with no bond available. Michael Gleeson (Councillor), Clasheen, Killarney

Good News For Killarney ‘We Need Clarity & Conviction’ & East Kerry in 2018 I WOULD like to welcome the allocation of funding for the following projects: N22, Lewis Road junction, €25,000 to allow for design of the preferred option; N22 Farranfore to Killarney, €25,000 to allow for revision of this project; N72, Barraduff West pavement overlay, €360,000; N72, Forge Cross to Rathmore, €1.35 million, including

THE Institute of Obstetricians and Gynaecologists has just welcomed new figures that show Ireland is one of the safest places to have a baby. We’re led to believe however by an Oireachtas committee that we need abortion to protect a mother’s health? We have HSE enquiries and HIQA reports all confirming that Savita Halappanavar died in Galway because of poor care rather than want of abortion

yet this tragic case is touted as an example of why we need abortion. Why can’t we have the truth? There is a matter of life and death at hand and we need clarity and conviction so that the inalienable truth, that we cannot take a life, can be upheld. Joe Green, Ballyspillane, Killarney

How To Achieve Your Health And Fitness Goals Want to shape up and boost your wellbeing? Fossa-based personal trainer and physical therapist Ed O’Donovan has some advice AH, JANUARY, the fitness industry’s favourite month – proceed with caution! It is truly difficult to navigate through the various approaches to fitness and nutrition when everything from juice diets to six meals a day, ten-minute abs to insanely high volume programmes are on the menu. The truth about optimal health and fitness and achieving your goals is that it can be pretty simple, but not easy. That’s where most falter, wanting an easy way out or a quick fix. If there was one, I’d like to think I’d have found it by now. What I have found over the last 10 years in fitness is that fads come and go but the fundamental training and nutrition principles remain. One undeniable truth is, our bodies are made to move, so to look and feel good, and for your body to function at its best, you need to move and move well. Another undeniable truth is that our bod-

ies thrive on real food. Both of these need to be the foundation of any attempt to get into better shape. If you need help with getting started – and, importantly continuing to improve your health and fitness – I can promise a real education in training and nutrition. I will meet you at your current level – whether that be under- or overweight, injured, in chronic pain or just exhausted from the stress of trying to juggle your personal health with all your other responsibilities – and will plan and progress from there. • Ed O’Donovan is a certified Personal Trainer, Nutrition Coach and Neuromuscular Physical Therapist. Club Vitae Raises The White Flag With Pride THE top-class team at Club Vitae Leisure Centre at Hotel Killarney was celebrating the New Year having been awarded the prestigious Emerald award at the annual Ireland Active National White Flag Quality Standard Awards. The White Flag award grades facilities’ operational standards similar to the Blue Flag award which classifies Ireland’s beaches. It is fast becoming the most sought-after accolade in the leisure industry.

The White Flag is based on four essential areas when operating any leisure centre – safety, hygiene, customer engagement and HR. The standard is designed to encourage continuous improvement. “The award is a great asset to Club Vitae and is a great reward to the team who do an excellent job in the leisure club and in particular rewards the commitment and dedication of our leisure and recreation manager Louise Devaney,” said a spokesperson for Hotel Killarney.

Wishing all our readers a happy and peaceful New Year!

January DESCRIBED as “one of the most dangerous junctions in Ireland”, the Lewis Road/Killarney bypass junction is an accident blackspot. Killarney spearheaded a campaign from January to ensure the junction came to national attention. Amidst whirling wind and driving rain, all eyes were trained on the skies over Killarney as the Irish Community Air Ambulance (ICAA) arrived in town. THE Ford name is making a return to the FIA World Rally Championship (WRC) in the upcoming season after previously pulling out in 2012. Following the success of the M-Sport World Rally Team securing both the drivers and manufacturing championships last year, the blue oval has officially announced entry into WRC and promised further support for the team. For 2018, the team will be rebranded to the M-Sport Ford World Rally Team. This deal was in part required to secure the services of the current world champion, Sebastian Ogier.

Prior to the 2018, Ford has previously partnered up with M-Sport for their WRC involvement from 1997 to until the end of the 2012 season. Together, they managed to take 52 wins and two manufacturer world championships. However, it was not only in 2012 did Ford first pulled out of the sport. They also stepped out of the scene back in 1980 after winning the 1979 season, and only returned in 1986 with the RS200. In the 2018 season, the M-Sport Ford team will once again be continuing development and use of the Fiesta World Rally Car.

New Car Electric

Pepsi Goes Electric REUTERS has reported that PepsiCo has reserved 100 of Tesla’s electric trucks, the largest known order of the big rig, as the company allegedly seeks to reduce fuel costs and fleet emissions. Tesla unveiled the truck last month and expects the truck to be in production by 2019. However, many big transport companies are holding off on the Tesla for now, with Tesla admitting it has problems filling orders for its small cars, and questions being raised over whether the company has the manufacturing capability to build large numbers of big trucks. There are also questions over recharging

times compared to a diesel fill-up, range, and payload capabilities and how the market for electric commercial vehicles will develop.

Land Rover’s All-New Electric Defender Motors

MUCH has been written about the new Land Rover icon, which replaces a model that went out of production almost two years ago – 67 years after the original 1948 Land Rover Series I it’s derived from — but the company has been silent about it since it showed the polarising DC100 concepts more than five years ago in 2011. Now, confirming the new Defender will be available for the first time with an all-electric powertrain.

That’s right, apart from traditional combustion engines for conventional versions, Land Rover’s most utilitarian and most off-road capable model will be offered with at least one electric motor backed by a powerful battery pack. No further details were provided by our senior Jaguar Land Rover source, but the ground-breaking news is consistent with JLR’s commitment to electrify every model in its range from 2020.

VW Recalls Touareg Over Defeat Device VW ARE never far away from the headlines these days and recently German authorities allegedly find two new emission control devices in 3.0-litre V6 diesel. Volkswagen has announced it is recalling 57,600 Touaregs internationally after the German motor transport authority (KBA) said it found two new emission control devices on the SUV’s 3.0-litre V6 diesel. The recall, concerns the latest Euro 6 version of the V6 diesel Touareg’s sold globally, VW has confirmed. The KBA noted, in the latest real-world emission tests, the defeat device was not triggered. In response to the KBA’s findings Volkswagen has developed a new software map for all vehicles affected.

Meanwhile, some owners are reporting the post-Dieselgate software ‘fix’ cars have worse fuel economy. Others say they have experienced breakdowns and mechanical issues.

A bouquet of beautiful memories, Sprayed with a million tears, Wishing God could have spared you, If just for a few more years. It does not take a special day, For me to think of you, Each Mass I hear, each prayer I say, Is offered up for you. We cannot bring the old days back, When we were all together, The family chain is broken now, But memories live forever. May He rest in peace, dear Jesus, In Thy heavenly home above, With the Sacred Heart of Jesus, In His own eternal love. Along the road to yesterday, That leads me straight to you, Are memories of happy days, Together we once knew. A silent grief that’s in our hearts, No human eye can trace, For many a broken heart is hid, Beneath a smiling face. Sadly missed, always loved and never forgotten by your loving wife Helen. xxx

Words: Debby Looney

Garden Magic New Year Equals New Year’s Resolutions! WE ALL make them, and some time later, many of us break them…. Every year I vow to get in control of weeds before they control me! I promise myself that this year I will sow and plant out on time. Clean as you go will be my motto and diligence will be my guiding virtue… so, this lasts for all of a week, as I am neither tidy nor industrious! This year I am going to make a New Year’s resolution which I can promise to keep, and it is one I would urge everyone to join me in! Plant a tree – or ten trees – or more if you have the space! I have a piece of land at the back of the garden which is idle, and what better way to make use of it than to plant trees? Good for the air, good for wildlife and as a bonus, good for drying out my wet soil! What trees to plant? Deciduous ones in any case are best for the environment. I personally like field maples, they are so easy to grow and their foliage is very pretty. Birches are easy to grow also, and the white bark is ghostly in the winter. Ginko bilobas are another spectacular tree, a remnant of times gone by, they are one of the oldest surviving species of tree. They are narrow in habit, and their leaves are a unique shape. Their autumn colour is the brightest yellow! If you have the space, Lime trees are often overlooked. They are one of my favourite large tree, their smooth bark is beautiful. Another large, fast-growing tree which is a beauty, is the Sweet Chestnut. Again, their foliage is their glory, and the chestnuts are delicious to boot. Beech trees grow very slowly, which is why they are great for hedging, but what is more spectacular for future generations than a full grown, stately, beech tree? For small gardens I would definitely recommend the red flowered hawthorn, which will attract birds to your garden in the autumn. Other trees suitable for the small garden are weeping willow, robinia, and any standard tree, such as bay trees, standard red robin or standard privets. There is a tree for every garden, every aspect and every soil. Therefore, do something this New Year for yourself, the environment and future generations, and join me in planting a tree!

Lakers End 2017 With A WIN

‘The Lakers have bigger fish to fry as they face Ballincollig in the semi-final of the President’s Cup this Saturday’

All eyes are on the cup semi-final as phase one of the league comes to an end, writes Adam Moynihan

National League: Division 1 Scotts Lakers 65 EJ Sligo All-Stars 60 The Scotts Lakers ended 2017 with a fairly lowkey victory over the EJ Sligo All-Stars in the Killarney Sports and Leisure Centre on Saturday last. Both sides already knew they were going to be operating Division 1B in the New Year so it was a case of fulfilling their final fixture more than anything else, and that fact was patently obvious for large periods of this game as both sides struggled to get any kind of rhythm going. There were a few flashes of excitement and Sligo, who turned up with just six players, looked decent at times but, in the end, the hosts ran out

fairly comfortable winners with American Antuan Bootle leading the way in the scoring charts with 27 points. Sligo came into this one rooted to the bottom of the table and on the back of a lengthy winless streak so it was perhaps unsurprising that so many of their squad decided to skip the long trip down south. The Lakers, meanwhile, were close to full strength with recently-acquired English guard Dailian Mason also available for the first time this season. The All-Stars started brightly and hit a succession of threes before Mason registered his first points in Lakers colours with a three of his own to keep his new team in touch. Cormac O’Donoghue’s men were struggling to get anything going offensively but a strong offensive rebound and put-back by Antuan Bootle put the Lakers ahead, 17-16, at the end of the first. Sligo again shot out in front in the second but five straight points by Pádraig Lucey cut the deficit to just two. Another robust finish by Bootle

completed the comeback and the sides were level on 31 points at the half. The third quarter was all about Bootle as the big man knocked down 13 points to propel the Lakers into a commanding 55-47 lead. Try as they might, the undermanned All-Stars just didn’t have the legs to make significant inroads into the deficit in the final quarter and the Lakers held on for a modest five-point win. It wasn’t their greatest performance of the season but would have been foolish for the Lakers to overexert themselves in such a meaningless tie. They have bigger fish to fry as they face Ballincollig in the semi-final of the President’s Cup this Saturday, January 6. Tip-off in Neptune Stadium is at 8pm. Lakers top scorers: A Bootle (27), D Mason (12), and P Lucey (7). Sligo top scorers: T Brockman (22), J San Martin (13) and P Hamilton (9).

Cup Win Not Beyond Realms Of Possibility

Words: Eamonn Keogh SCOTTS LAKERS will start the New Year with a very important President’s Cup semi-final against Ballincollig on this Saturday, January 6, in the Neptune Stadium, Cork, at 8pm. The other semi-final featuring Neptune against Keane’s SuperValu Killorglin will go ahead today, Friday, January 5, at 8.30pm. It is a big achievement by the Killarney side to reach the cup semi-final and opponents Ballincollig will be firm favourites in this tie. The Cork side are in second place on the league table with just two defeats and when the sides clashed in November, Ballincollig enjoyed a comfortable 98-75 win over the Lakers. It was a match where they also scored a remarkable 15 three-pointers spread across seven different players so they have several threats to cause the Lakers problems again. Coached by former Tralee Tigers league winner Kieran O’Sullivan, the Cork side have top quality foreign players in Cameron Clarke and Pere Tres while Ronan O’Sullivan and Ciarán O’Sullivan are two of the best Irish players in the league. However Scotts Lakers have showed very encouraging signs throughout the season that they can match up well against any opposition when playing to full potential. Both sides clashed in the Castleisland blitz last week with the Lakers coming out on top. The Lakers eventually lost the premier men’s final to Tralee Warriors by six points after

Scotts Lakers St Paul’s Killarney, who will play Ballincollig in the President’s Cup semi-final tomorrow, January 6; front, Mike Pierce, John Brosnan, Mark Greene, Dailian Mason, Philip O’Connor (Captain), Shane Horgan, Keith O’Grady and Dylan O’Sullivan. putting up a great performance. Scotts Lakers coach Cormac O’Donoghue will have his side well prepared for this clash. The Castleisland blitz games and last weekend’s league win over Sligo kept the team very active over the festive season and were better preparation than any training sessions. Ballincollig’s three-point scoring threat is well documented and if they repeat he 15 three-pointers again, Lakers will not be able to match them. Better defence and dominating an inside game is probably Scotts Lakers best chance of progressing to a cup final. The Killarney side have one of the biggest and strongest Americans in the league in Antuan Bootle, a player capable of troubling any team under the boards when he plays close to the basket. It will also be a huge game for the Lakers other big men Padraig Lucey, Andrew Fitzgerald, Dan Griffin and Paul Clarke under the boards. Elsewhere on the backcourt, the likes of Justin Tuason, Mark Greene, Dailian Mason, Philip O’Connor and Shane Horgan will also have to be at their best to bring the Lakers over the line. League form, table positions, previous meetings and general levels of consistency will all point towards a Ballincollig victory. It will be a tough challenge for Scotts Lakers but a win is not beyond the realms of possibility. Scotts Lakers finished the year on a high with a

five-point win over Sligo All Stars in Killarney Sports Centre last Saturday afternoon. This was a closely contested encounter and it was only in the third quarter that the Lakers managed to pull away and enjoy a narrow advantage that they held on to for the remainder of the game. The match started on a sad note with the news of the death of the mother of Lakers player Justin Tuason. A minute’s silence was observed before the tip-off and St Pauls and Scotts Lakers offer sincere condolences to Justin and his family at this time.

Supporters Bus Scotts Lakers will run a supporters bus to the President’s Cup semi-final tomorrow Saturday, January 6, in The Neptune Stadium if there is enough interest. If enough supporters are willing to travel on it, the bus will depart the High Street car park, Killarney, at 5.30pm. The match is at 8pm and the bus will return to Killarney afterwards. The cost is €10 for the return journey per person. Further details from club officers or on the St Paul’s Killarney Facebook page.

At The End Of The Day Words: Eamonn Fitzgerald THERE comes a time in a sportspersons ’s life when one has to go voluntarily or in some cases the manager deems the player surplus to retirement. It can be mind shattering for some. Henry Shefflin had won 10 All Irelands and could walk away because as Brian Cody said, “he left nothing behind”. Paul Byrnes recently launched his book At The End Of The Day, which features stories from, retired sports personalities on what it’s like to leave the game they love. Gerard Towey, the rower, recalls their rescue on gale force waters by a tanker. Time to go, after the Beijing Olympics. Padraic Joyce had recently started a new business. He always felt sport was a big gamble and the man who gambled most was AP McCoy. No more injuries. Derval O’Rourke has not missed the hype as she has moved in to another career and that has opened up a whole new challenge for her. Gordon Darcy retired from rugby in 2015. Damien Duff was capped 100 times for Ireland; Brian Kerr said he was a genius and a wizard on the ball. How will I ever replace playing the game, Duff asks. Valerie Mulcahy is regarded as the best ladies footballer to play the game. She won 10 All-Ireland medals. Her boss Eamonn Ryan comments on her unflappable temperament. Tipp hurler Eoin Kelly always delivered on the big stage. In retirement he slotted in to punditry. There is an interesting article on the psychology of

retiring by Niamh Fitzpatrick. She discovers how players can prepare. After sterling performances with Kerry in the white heat of battle Tomás O Sé has developed in to a very alert pundit. Sonia O’Sullivan, former World Champion and Olympic medallist, still has not got the medals the Chinese stole from her due to drug taking. Eoin Reddan was capped 71 times for Ireland. He excelled in battles with bigger men. Donal Cusack says, “I never really retired.” Some day it will be

all over for Donal Óg, but not yet as he continues to coach. Daniel Ritchie rowed for England and he has found a niche for himself as a motivational speaker. Retirement day comes to everyone and some are better prepared for this special day. Mícheál Ó Muircheartaigh presents a very interesting foreword to the book. The passages are complemented with excellent photographs, When you walk down that tunnel for the last time the memories will sustain you in your new life. The book is a great addition as athletes adjust to a new life.

The Advertiser Sports Awards 2017 2017 was a remarkable year for local sports as Killarney’s top athletes helped their teams to an unprecedented amount of silverware. Adam Moynihan gives his take on the some of the best (and worst) of the year Lifetime Achievement Award Colm ‘Gooch’ Cooper (Kerry) In a year that saw Colm Cooper announce his retirement from the Kerry senior football team, I think it’s important to acknowledge his glittering career in the green and gold. Between 2002 and 2017, Gooch made 85 championship appearances, earned eight All-Star awards and bowed out as the county’s alltime leading scorer. The talented forward captured the nation’s imagination with his uniquely skillful playing style, helping Kerry to five memorable All-Irelands along the way. And it’s not like he’s a spent force either. The Ardshanavooley native scored the decisive goal in this year’s All-Ireland Club Final and was Crokes’ top scorer in the 2017 County Championship. Gooch is far from a spent force and he will continue to play a key role for his club in 2018 and beyond. Player of the Year Gavin White (Dr Crokes) It was a hugely successful year for sport locally and there was no shortage of candidates in this particular category but Gavin White gets the nod on the following basis: in 2017 he was best player on the best team. An elite athlete with a high footballing IQ, White’s consistency belies his tender years (he’s still only 20 years of age). Throughout the Crokes’ absurdly dominant year – and in 2016 as well, for that matter - White came up trumps time and time again. Whether putting the squeeze on at the defensive end or making a trademark solo burst up the field, White never fails to catch the eye and he appears to have an extremely bright future in the game. Young Player of the Year David Clifford (Kerry minors) I don’t think I need to explain myself for this one. Manager of the Year Pat O’Shea (Dr Crokes) His team’s record speaks for itself. O’Shea led the Crokes to their first All-Ireland in 25 years in March and there was no let up from there as they swept the board, winning the Club Championship and retaining both the County Championship and the County League. The year ended on a bit of a sour note with the O’Donoghue Cup debacle and subsequent defeat to Nemo Rangers in the Munster Final but even by O’Shea’s own high standards, 2017 was a fairly impressive one. Best Individual Performance David Clifford (Kerry minors) All-Ireland Final v Derry, September 17 2017 gave us plenty of remarkable individual performances from players in a number of codes but 4-4 in an All-Ireland final is just ridiculous. That’s 16 points. In an All-Ireland final. Madness. Hopefully there’s plenty more to come in 2018. Best Team Performance St Brendan’s College Hogan Cup Final v St Peter’s, April 1 It always takes a big performance to get over the line in an All-Ireland final but the Sem were different class as they beat St Peter’s of Wexford 0-18 to 0-10 to clinch their second consecutive Hogan Cup title. The likes of David Shaw, Donnchadh O’Sullivan and Billy Courtney (four points each) stole the show but it was as accomplished a team display as you’re ever

likely to see in Croke Park. Starting XV: Robert Osborne; Lorcán McMonagle, Chris O’Donoghue, Seán O’Leary; Jack Griffin, Michael Potts, Niall Donohue; Billy Courtney, Cian Gammell; Dara Moynihan, Donnachadh O’Sullivan, Barry Keane; David Shaw, Mark O’Shea, Ciarán Flynn. Greatest Scenes Stephen Hayes’s goal v Janesboro (March 11) and Daithí Casey’s goal v Celtic (July 1) I’m very much sitting on the fence for this one. I was up in Celtic Park when Stephen Hayes’ extra-time winner sent the hosts into the semi-final of the FAI Junior Cup and it was an unbelievably special moment for Killarney Celtic. To see all the fans and players flooding onto the pitch was amazing and it must have been some buzz for everyone involved. I had a very different perspective on Daithí’s league final winner as I was obviously on the pitch at the time. It was the 85th minute and I was absolutely out on my feet but I probably never ran as fast in my life trying to get from left back down to the corner to celebrate with him. I remember looking across and seeing all the Athletic supporters on the pitch (Daithí had to run over to the Celtic side, of course) and all the subs and management going mental… I don’t know how we managed to settle down and see out the game because we were emotional wrecks by that stage. Clutch Moment Donal O’Sullivan (Rathmore) O’Donoghue Cup Final v Legion, December 3 Legion led for the majority of this final but a dogged Rathmore fightback meant it was 0-10 apiece as the game went into additional time. With extra time looming and their quest for a fourth straight O’Donoghue Cup in real jeopardy, Rathmore needed someone to step up and take responsibility. Enter midfielder Donal O’Sullivan. O’Sullivan, who had earlier kicked the equaliser, gathered possession around 45 yards from goal, slipped by an opponent and swung over a memorable score to win the game. It’s a point that will go down as one of the greatest in Rathmore’s history. Most Improved Killarney Athletic I’m reluctant to include a team that I was part of but it’s our first time winning the league in 52 years so I might as well milk it while I can. The 2015/16 season was a disaster for Athletic. We were in the bottom two for more or less the whole year and needed ten points from our last four games just to stay in the division. We somehow managed it but, to be honest, if we got relegated we could have had no real complaints. To go from that to winning the double twelve months later is a crazy turnaround. A Year to Forget Kilcummin Spare a thought for Kilcummin who lost their Senior Championship status following a relegation play-off defeat to Kerins O’Rahilly’s. They also laboured in Division 2 of the County League only to just about stay up while in the O’Donoghue Cup they squandered a healthy lead against Dr Crokes and crashed out at the quarter final stage. They’ll be hoping for a far more fruitful 2018 and they certainly have enough talent in their ranks to have a good crack at the Intermediate.

Best Supporters Scotts Lakers National League basketball made a welcome return to Killarney in 2017 and while the team haven’t quite set the world alight just yet, Lakers home games have quickly become a popular local attraction. Huge crowds packed into the Killarney Sports and Leisure Centre (aka the Auracle) for some highly entertaining games and there promises to be more of the same in the second half of the season as the Lakers challenge for the Division 1B title. Game of the Year Athletic 2-3 Celtic, May 21 The reverse fixture in March - which we won 3-2 with two late goals - was also a contender but I think the game down in Woodlawn was possibly even better for the neutral. We actually played really well in the first half and went 2-0 up through Jamie Doolan and an audacious 40-yard lob from Daithí Casey. Tony Brosnan pulled one back for Celtic and then we got a man sent off before half time which definitely didn’t help our cause. Celtic bossed the second half and headers from Cathal O’Shea and Peter McCarthy made it 3-2. The visitors were also reduced to ten men late on and we had a couple of chances to equalise but they held on for a great win that more or less confirmed their place in the league final. Biggest Shock Dr Crokes’ defeat to Nemo Rangers, November 26 Spa’s horrendous 16-point defeat to Castleisland in the opening round of the Intermediate is definitely up there - especially when you take into account the fact that it was the only game Desmonds won all year – but Crokes losing the Munster Final was definitely the most surprising result of 2017. It was more the manner of the defeat than the defeat itself that turned heads. Nemo are obviously a decent side so if they happened to sneak a one-point win it wouldn’t necessarily have been the biggest upset of all time. The thing is, we’ve become so accustomed to Crokes being so consistently good, witnessing them actually playing badly and getting soundly beaten was a bit of a shock to the system. Biggest Joke The O’Donoghue Cup I already had my rant on this issue but this year’s competition was a joke, there are no two ways about it. Between the lack of competitiveness, the schedule and now teams deciding to not play games, something surely has to change if the East Kerry Championship is to survive. Honourable Mentions Killarney Rugby Football Club had a very successful end to the 2016/17 season as they gained promotion to Division 2 of the Munster Junior League and also won the Martin O’Sullivan Cup. Legion and Spa will be disappointed with how they fared in the championship but both were promoted to Division 1 of the County League. The Spa ladies completed the treble as they won Division 3 of the County League, the Junior B Championship and the East Kerry League. And finally, Cedar Galaxy, Killarney’s youngest soccer club, defeated Tralee Dynamos to advance to the last 32 of the Munster Junior Cup. They’ll play Janesboro in the New Year.

Fionn Fitzgerald To Captain Kerry Words: Eve Kelliher DR CROKES has nominated Fionn Fitzgerald as Kerry Senior Football Captain for 2018. Fionn’s nomination will go before the January County Committee meeting for ratification. Fionn made his debut with the Kerry Seniors in 2013 in a League game against Kildare. He has since won All-Ireland senior (2014) and Allianz League (2017) medals and five Munster senior medals (2013, 2014, 2015, 2016 and 2017). Kerry open this year’s League campaign with a home fixture to Donegal in Killarney on January 28. Rounds 2 and 3 are away trips, to Mayo and Monaghan respectively. Round 4 Kerry are at home to Galway and then in the last three rounds Kerry are away to Dublin, home to Kildare on St Patrick’s Day and away to Tyrone.

Rugby News ... Words: Liam Murphy THE Christmas break gave us plenty of rugby action to enjoy with the PRO14 offering up some decent provincial matches on St Stephen’s Day and on New Year’s Day – though Munster fans will be far from happy with the results in the two matches over the holidays. Munster were on a decent run of form having beating Leicester at home and away in the Champions Cup. First up it was the visit of archrivals

Leinster to Thomond Park on St Stephen’s day and to bluntly honest it looked like the Munster lads were still enjoying the Christmas break as Leinster put them to the sword. An increased capacity full house watched Munster struggle as Leinster scored 13 points to nil within the first 13 minutes. A Conor Murray try brought the home side into the game however a Munster yellow card for Conway and another try for the visitors dampened the Munster momentum with the score 27-5 in the visitors favour at half time. Keatley and Conway scored tries after the break, however Jordan Lamour scored a possible try of the season to seal the win.

Pitch & Putt

On New Year’s Day Munster travelled to the Kingspan to take on Ulster in the second interpro. Munster started the better as they dominated the first half to lead 17-0 at half time with tries from Niall Scannell and a penalty try. JJ Hanrahan had a very poor match missing conversions and a penalty, however Munster’s indiscipline cost them yet again as they received a yellow card and a red card in quick succession in the second half. In the end, Ulster snatched the win with a 24-17 scoreline. The red card was deemed harsh by many but Munster will be thankful that the Christmas break is over as they prepare to host Connacht tomorrow at Thomond.

Ryder Cup Matches At Killeen

Sean Murphy (Murphy’s Bar, sponsor) presenting the Murphy’s Matchplay Cup to 2017 Deerpark Pitch & Putt Club Matchplay winner Gearóid Cronin at the club’s traditional pre-Christmas gathering in Murphy’s.

A COLD breeze and a drop in temperature provided a challenging test for the Killarney Heights Hotel and Sean Murphy/Murphy’s Bar golf teams in their annual Ryder Cup matches at Killeen on December 30. The Heights got off to a good start and won the first two matches comfortably. However, the remaining five matches were decided on the 17th hole. The Heights retained the cup with a 4-3 victory in this four-ball competition. A great evening was spent in Murphy’s Bar after the presentation of the cup was awarded to the winning captain of the Heights team Matt Leacy.

The results are as follows (Killarney Heights names first): Matt Leacy and Barry Duggan won 7/6 Anthony Nash and Denis Nash; George Vass and Pat Kelleher won 6/5 Ger Moroney and Pat Casey; Eugene O’Sullivan and Seanie Kelliher lost 3/1 Pat Cussen and Paul Corridan; John Cahill and Billy Morris won 2/1 Mike Casey and Leo Casey; Dave McIndoe and Pat Favier lost 2/1 Conor MacNeice and Kevin Browne; Donal (Gap) O’Sullivan and Brian Holden won 2/1 Niall O`Meara and Jimmy Smith; Sean Casey and Jim Sheehan lost 2/1 Brendan Keogh and Brian Regan.

Spa Club

HAPPY NEW YEAR: I would like to wish all our members, friends, sponsors and their families a very happy new year. Many thanks to the Executive committee who steered the club through 2017.To all the club’s officers who continue to do their job to the best of the ability. To everyone who volunteered and helped out with a team, a committee or a group, many thanks for your work which is the cornerstone that the club is built on. If I had one or maybe 2 wishes for the year ahead it would be this. That everyone would maybe give just a little more to the club. We are extremely grateful for your efforts but just if you can sell one more lotto ticket or just give one more percent to your role it would make the club better. And also, I would urge you to always think of how the club is perceived. We may sometimes think the club is only about what we do for it. So, whether you are a team manager or a senior player or a lotto ticket seller, always be mindful of the fella next to you. So, if it means going to a juvenile match or attending a club function I ask you to go the extra mile to make sure we are represented as best as we can. I urge that we listen to each other’s ideas, go to our events, celebrate in our victories and remind everyone of their importance
